Sep 30 2023VerHagen (5-1) allowed one run on one hit and struck out one over one inning to earn the win Saturday over the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Cardinals stormed out to an 11-0 lead after three innings, but starter Drew Rom didn't complete five frames. VerHagen was ultimately awarded the win instead of Andre Pallante, who allowed a run on four hits over one inning. VerHagen's been a decent middle reliever this year with a 3.98 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 60:26 K:BB over a career-high 61 innings across 60 appearances. That's the best he's done in the majors since 2015 with the Tigers.
Sep 2 2023VerHagen (4-1) allowed two runs on one hit over one-third of an inning to take the loss and a blown save Saturday versus the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Verhagen plunked Andrew McCutchen and gave up a two-run home run to Josh Palacios in the ninth inning. Prior to Saturday, VerHagen had been in good form with just one run allowed over 10 innings since the start of August. The right-hander has a 4.38 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 52:21 K:BB, 12 holds and a blown save through 52 innings this season.
Aug 28 2023The Cardinals reinstated VerHagen (personal) from the bereavement list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He'll be available out of the bullpen for Monday's series opener versus the Padres after he was away from the team for the past three days while tending to the personal matter. The Cardinals optioned James Naile to Triple-A Memphis to open up a spot on the 26-man active roster for VerHagen.
Aug 25 2023VerHagen was placed on the bereavement list Friday, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: VerHagen figures to be away from the Cardinals for the duration of their weekend series in Philadelphia before rejoining the roster early next week when they return home. Guillermo Zuniga is taking his spot in the bullpen.
Jul 22 2023VerHagen (hip) was activated off the 15-day injured list Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: VerHagen missed three weeks with a hip impingement. Prior to the injury, he recorded an unimpressive 4.78 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 35 relief appearances. Kyle Leahy was optioned to clear space on the roster for his return.
Jul 21 2023VerHagen (hip) could be activated from the 15-day injured list as soon as Saturday, John Denton of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: VerHagen allowed one run over one inning in his first rehab appearance with Double-A Springfield on Thursday and it sounds like it might be the only rehab outing he needs before returning. The righty holds a 4.78 ERA and 38:18 K:BB over 37.2 relief innings for the Cardinals this season.
Jul 18 2023VerHagen (hip) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Springfield on Thursday, John Denton of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: VerHagen landed on the injured list at the beginning of July with a right hip impingement after attempting to pitch through it for three weeks. It's unclear how long the Cardinals plan on keeping VerHagen in the minors, but it's likely he returns to the bullpen before the end of July.
Jul 2 2023VerHagen (hip) was placed on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a right hip impingement. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: John Denton of MLB.com reports VerHagen has been dealing with hip pain for three weeks. The right-hander tried to pitch through it, but he's given up eight runs (six earned) over his last 9.2 innings. He'll now be shelved for a minimum of two weeks. JoJo Romero was recalled from Triple-A Memphis to take VerHagen's spot in the Cardinals' bullpen.
Jun 18 2023VerHagen (4-0) pitched 1.2 perfect innings and struck out one to earn the win Sunday over the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: VerHagen did his part to keep the game tied until the Cardinals took the lead in the ninth inning. The right-hander has had mixed results in June with three runs allowed over 6.2 innings while posting a 5:1 K:BB. He continues to serve as a multi-inning option, though he's also managed seven holds this season and could see more late-inning work while Ryan Helsley (forearm) is out. VerHagen has a 4.32 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 34:13 K:BB over 33.1 innings this season.
May 21 2023VerHagen (3-0) struck out three without allowing a baserunner over 2.1 innings to earn the win Sunday over the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: VerHagen came into the game with the bases loaded and two outs, and he balked in an inherited runner. From there, he was perfect, recording seven outs on a tidy 26 pitches. The right-hander has been solid as a long-relief option for the Cardinals this season, posting a 3.60 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 26:8 K:BB over 25 innings. He's also picked up five holds. VerHagen has allowed four runs in 12.2 innings in May.
May 8 2023VerHagen (2-0) earned the win Sunday over the Tigers, striking out three over two perfect innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: JoJo Romero would have typically been in line for the win, but the official scorer deemed VerHagen more effective in his multi-inning appearance despite entering after the Cardinals took the lead. Over his last six outings, VerHagen has given up one run on three hits and four walks with eight strikeouts in 7.2 innings. He's been solid for the season as well with a 3.50 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 21:7 K:BB while adding four holds across 18 innings. The right-hander fills a versatile role in the Cardinals' bullpen, which has included some setup work early in 2023.
Mar 7 2023VerHagen has allowed a walk and struck out two over two Grapefruit League innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Katie Woo of The Athletic reports VerHagen mixed his new four-seam fastball in with his usual sinker and slider. A hip injury ended the right-hander's season early in 2022, and his 6.65 ERA, 1.89 WHIP and 18:14 K:BB over 21.2 relief innings weren't great marks when he was healthy. He remains in the mix as a multi-inning relief option who could also serve as a spot starter, though the Cardinals' rotation has enough depth to weather an injury or two before they'd need to turn to someone like VerHagen.
Nov 9 2022The Cardinals reinstated VerHagen (hip) from the 60-day injured list Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: VerHagen underwent surgery on his right hip in early August and may not be fully healthy yet even though he's been added back to the 40-man roster, but he should be close to 100 percent by spring training. The right-hander will be entering the second season of the two-year, $5.5 million deal he inked with St. Louis last March and will be looking to bounce back after struggling in his limited opportunities before getting the season-ending hip procedure. He made 19 appearances out of the St. Louis bullpen in 2022, logging a 6.65 ERA and 1.89 WHIP across 21.2 innings.
Aug 5 2022VerHagen (hip) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was announced Thursday that VerHagen will require season-ending surgery on his hip, so the move to the 60-day IL was only a matter of time. The 31-year-old inked a two-year, $5.5 million deal with the Cardinals after spending the previous two seasons in Japan, and he struggled in his return to the majors with a 6.65 ERA, 1.89 WHIP and 18:14 K:BB across 21.2 innings.
Aug 4 2022VerHagen will undergo season-ending hip surgery, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: VerHagen dealt with a hip injury for most of the season, and he'll ultimately require a procedure to address the issue. The right-hander made just 19 appearances during his injury-plagued season and posted a 6.65 ERA and 1.89 WHIP in 21.2 innings. According to Katie Woo of The Athletic, VerHagen is expected to make a full recovery from hip surgery in advance of spring training.
Jul 29 2022VerHagen (hip) threw a side session this week, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: VerHagen recently received a second opinion on his right hip, but his evaluation apparently didn't reveal anything too concerning since he's been cleared to begin a throwing program. The right-hander has been on the shelf since July 17 due to a right hip impingement, but it's possible that he'll rejoin the Cardinals' bullpen sometime in early August.
Jul 23 2022VerHagen is getting a second opinion on his right hip, John Denton of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The injury has been labeled an impingement, but VerHagen has dealt with the injury for months. It's possible he is getting the second opinion to determine if surgery makes sense.
Jul 17 2022The Cardinals placed VerHagen on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a right hip impingement. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Just four days ago, VerHagen returned from a three-week stint on the IL due to a sore right shoulder, but he made only two appearances out of the St. Louis bullpen before succumbing to another injury. His latest IL stint is backdated to Friday, so he'll be eligible to return as soon as July 30. The Cardinals reinstated Steven Matz (shoulder) from the IL in a corresponding move in advance of his scheduled start Sunday against the Reds.
Jul 13 2022The Cardinals reinstated VerHagen (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Wednesday, John Denton of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: St. Louis optioned left-handed starter Matthew Liberatore to Triple-A Memphis to clear a spot on the active roster for VerHagen, who will be available in a multi-inning role out of the bullpen as he makes his way back from the IL. Before being sidelined with the right shoulder injury, VerHagen hadn't been particularly effective for St. Louis, pitching to a 6.30 ERA and 1.80 WHIP over his 17 appearances out of the bullpen.
Jul 5 2022VerHagen (shoulder) began a rehab assignment with High-A Peoria on Tuesday, John Denton of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: VerHagen has been out since June 24 with right shoulder soreness. He's eligible to return from the injured list Saturday, and if all goes well during his rehab, it's possible he'll only require a minimum stint on the shelf.
Jun 24 2022VerHagen (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While it's not yet clear how long VerHagen has been dealing with his shoulder injury, he hasn't been particularly effective recently, as he's allowed 10 runs (nine earned) on 13 hits and four walks while striking out seven in 5.2 innings over his last seven appearances. The right-hander will be forced to miss at least two weeks due to his injury, while Packy Naughton was recalled to take VerHagen's place in the bullpen.
Jun 7 2022VerHagen (3-1) allowed three runs (two earned) on a hit and a walk in two-thirds of an inning, taking the loss Tuesday versus the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Oli Marmol deployed Giovanny Gallegos and Ryan Helsley in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to keep the game tied at 1-1. The Cardinals pulled ahead in the top of the 10th, but VerHagen couldn't protect the lead, instead giving up a walkoff three-run home run to Taylor Walls. VerHagen has now allowed multiple runs in each of his last two appearances, pushing his ERA up to 4.96 with a 1.53 WHIP and 11:10 K:BB across 16.1 innings this year. He's more likely to see multi-inning assignments than closing chances.
May 31 2022VerHagen (3-0) earned the extra-inning win Tuesday versus the Padres. He allowed a hit and a walk while striking out one in one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: VerHagen kept the Padres off the board in the 10th inning, and he was rewarded with the win when Albert Pujols plated the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly. In his last four outings, VerHagen has picked up three wins while allowing two runs, four hits and four walks in 5.2 innings. The right-hander has a 3.38 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 9:9 K:BB across 13.1 innings, but his usage lately suggests he's trusted to pitch in close games even if he's seen mostly middle-relief assignments.
May 28 2022VerHagen (2-0) retired the only batter he faced to earn the win Friday versus the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Dakota Hudson was solid but a little shaky with command, running up a 97-pitch total through 4.2 innings. VerHagen was able to get the final out of the fifth inning with the Cardinals leading, and that lead lasted to the end. This was VerHagen's second win of the year, and they've come in his last three outings, sandwiched around an appearance in which he gave up two runs to the Blue Jays. The right-hander has a solid 3.65 ERA, but his 1.38 WHIP and 8:8 K:BB in 12.1 innings don't inspire much confidence in his long-term success. He'll likely continue to see most of his work in the middle innings.
May 22 2022VerHagen (1-0) earned the win Saturday versus the Pirates, allowing one walk and striking out two over 2.1 scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Starter Matthew Liberatore came up one out short of qualifying for the win, allowing VerHagen to earn it instead. Since returning from a hip injury, VerHagen has allowed just one hit and two walks over 5.1 innings. He has a 2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 8:6 K:BB in six appearances spanning 10 innings overall.
May 14 2022VerHagen (hip) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: VerHagen spent just over three weeks on the injured list, but he recently made a pair of rehab appearances and allowed a run on a hit and a walk while striking out five in 3.2 innings. The right-hander should pitch mainly in lower-leverage situations for the Cardinals now that he's back to full health.
May 10 2022Verhagen (hip) is scheduled to make a rehab appearance with Double-A Springfield on Thursday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Veghagen made his first rehab appearance last week and will continue the rehab assignment Thursday. He threw 27 pitches over 1.2 innings during that outing and is expected to continue ramping up his workload with Springfield.
May 8 2022VerHagen (hip) is scheduled to make his second rehab appearance at Double-A Springfield during the upcoming week, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: VerHagen is expected to increase his workload from the 1.2 innings and 27 pitches he tossed in his first rehab outing at Triple-A Memphis on May 3. Once he's deemed ready to return from the 10-day injured list, VerHagen is expected to settle into a multi-inning/mop-up role out of the St. Louis bullpen.
May 2 2022VerHagen (hip) has been sent to Triple-A Memphis to begin a rehab assignment, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: VerHagen is expected to make a two-inning appearance for Memphis on Tuesday, putting him one step closer to returning from the 10-day injured list. The 31-year-old was placed on the IL on April 22 with a right hip impingement, but his time away from the team should be relatively minimal. He has posted a 5.79 ERA and 1.93 WHIP with four strikeouts over 4.2 innings this season.
Apr 22 2022VerHagen was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right hip impingement Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: VerHagen dealt with a hip issue during camp, and the injury flared up during Thursday's game against the Marlins. While it's not yet clear when he'll return to action, the right-hander will be sidelined for at least a week and a half. Left-hander Packy Naughton was called up by St. Louis to take VerHagen's place in the bullpen.
Apr 21 2022VerHagen exited Thursday's game against the Marlins with a hip injury, John Denton of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: VerHagen entered the game in the fourth inning to relieve Jordan Hicks, but he was only able to complete one frame before the injury flared up. Denton further reported that VerHagen had suffered from the same issue in the middle of spring training, meaning a stint on the injured list is likely.
Apr 14 2022VerHagen allowed a run on one hit and a walk with three strikeouts in 2.2 innings versus the Brewers on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: VerHagen followed started Adam Wainwright in this contest. The lone blemish on VerHagen's line was an RBI single by Kolten Wong in the sixth inning. This was the right-hander's first major-league appearance since 2019 after he spent two years in Japan. He wasn't able to win a job in the rotation in spring training, but if he continues to pitch well out of the bullpen, he could be a candidate for spot starts later in the season.
Apr 6 2022VerHagen will begin the season as a member of the Cardinals' bullpen, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: VerHagen and Jake Woodford were both in contention for the fifth starter's role, but the two will instead head to the bullpen as multi-inning options after manager Oliver Marmol announced Wednesday that Jordan Hicks secured the final opening in the rotation. The 31-year-old right-hander has previously seen big-league action in parts of six seasons with Detroit from 2014 through 2019, but he spent the past two years in with the Nippon-Ham Fighters in Japan, where he was one of the top starters in Nippon Professional Baseball. He returned stateside this winter on a two-year, $5.5 million deal with St. Louis and looked to have an inside track on a starting role, but a 10.13 ERA and 1.50 WHIP over his eight innings during the Grapefruit League slate prompted the Cardinals to go in a different direction.
Mar 11 2022VerHagen signed a two-year, $5.5 million deal with the Cardinals on Friday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: VerHagen becomes the first major-league signing since the end of the lockout. The 31-year-old righty owns an unremarkable 5.11 ERA and an 18.3 percent strikeout rate in 199 innings at the MLB level, with most of his time coming in relief. The last of those innings came in 2019, as he spent the last two years pitching for the Nippon-Ham Fighters in Japan. He looked good at that level, working as a starter and posting a 3.49 ERA and 1.17 WHIP while striking out 25.0 percent of opposing batters. It's possible he'll have the chance to compete for a spot at the back of the Cardinals' rotation, though his expected role has yet to be clarified.
Sep 25 2019VerHagen (4-3) allowed three runs over 4.1 innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Twins. He gave up four hits and two walks, while striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As has been the case lately, VerHagen piggybacked with starter Daniel Norris, as the latter was limited to just three innings. Norris actually held the Twins scoreless during his time in the game, and VerHagen did the same into the seventh, but Luis Arraez got to him for a two-run blast that ultimately saddled the righty with the loss. VerHagen now has a 5.90 ERA this season and will continue to serve in a long-relief role over the season's final few games.
Sep 18 2019VerHagen is expected to work multiple innings in relief Thursday against the Indians as a piggyback for Daniel Norris, who is listed as the Tigers' scheduled starter for the series finale. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Norris has covered exactly three innings in each of his last six starts and has posted a 2.50 ERA and 0.89 WHIP over that span, so his workload seems fairly predictable at this point. VerHagen has followed Norris in the last four of those starts and has found similar success, compiling a 2.16 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 13:4 K:BB in 16.2 innings. The Tigers will likely count on VerHagen for around 4-to-5 innings behind Norris on Thursday, leaving the right-hander as the pitcher most likely to factor into any decision.
Sep 15 2019VerHagen tossed four scoreless innings in relief but didn't factor into the decision Saturday in the Tigers' 8-4 win over the Orioles in 12 innings. He scattered three hits and a walk and struck out two in the appearance. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The piggyback arrangement between Daniel Norris and Drew VerHagen once again proved favorable, as the two pitchers combined to cover seven scoreless frames. Since whiffing a career-high 11 in a spot start Aug. 23 in Minnesota, VerHagen has remained effective while working as a bulk reliever in his last four appearances. Over that stretch, VerHagen has supplied a 2.16 ERA and 1.20 WHIP across 16.2 innings.
Sep 4 2019VerHagen worked 4.1 innings in relief in Tuesday's 6-5 loss to the Royals, giving up one run on two hits and two walks while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For his second straight appearance, VerHagen piggybacked starter Daniel Norris, who was pulled after three innings. VerHagen exited with the Tigers up 4-3 and likely would have been in line for the win, but relievers Jose Cisnero and Gregory Soto were unable to protect the lead. If he isn't needed out of the bullpen over the next four games, VerHagen will likely piggyback Norris again Sunday in Oakland.
Aug 27 2019VerHagen is expected to work as a "piggyback" reliever behind starter Daniel Norris in Thursday's game against the Indians, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Aug 24 2019VerHagen (4-2) picked up the win in Friday's 9-6 victory over the Twins, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk over six innings while striking out 11.
Aug 23 2019VerHagen is starting Friday's game at Minnesota, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
Aug 16 2019VerHagen (3-2) picked up the win in Friday's 2-0 shutout of the Rays, giving up three hits and a walk over five scoreless innings of relief. He struck out three.
Aug 15 2019VerHagen isn't expected to start this week with Jordan Zimmermann (neck) trending toward a return from the 10-day injured list and likely to rejoin the Detroit rotation
Aug 6 2019VerHagen (2-2) allowed one earned run on seven hits and no walks while striking out five to earn the win in the second game of the team's doubleheader against the

Jul 9 2018VerHagen allowed no runs on one hit and one walk while fanning three across 2.2 innings in his first outing since June 19.VerHagen was having a rough go of it prior to landing on the disabled list, as he'd surrendered one or more runs in seven of his last 10 outings before suffering a broken nose. He'll look to turn it around as he sits with an alarming 8.02 ERA and 1.45 WHIP with 21 strikeouts over 21.1 innings.
Jul 8 2018The Tigers will activate VerHagen (nose) from the 10-day disabled list ahead of Monday's series opener against the Rays.VerHagen has been sidelined for the past couple of weeks with a broken nose. After checking out fine physically during a trio of rehab appearances with Triple-A Toledo, he'll re-enter the Detroit bullpen Monday, likely working in middle or long relief.
Jun 30 2018VerHagen will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Toledo on Saturday.VerHagen has been on the disabled list since June 20 after sustaining a broken nose, and appears likely to spend little more than the minimum 10 days on the DL. The 27-year-old will likely make a couple appearances with the Mud Hens and could return to the Tigers early next week.
Jun 20 2018The Tigers placed VerHagen (nose) on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday.VerHagen fractured his nose when he was hit by a relay throw while covering first base during his appearance in Tuesday's loss to the Reds. The Tigers don't have a concrete timetable for VerHagen's return, but the right-hander may be able to remain on a normal throwing program while he waits for his nose to heal. Johnny Barbato was recalled from Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move.
Jun 19 2018VerHagen (nose) sustained a broken nose during Tuesday's loss to Cincinnati, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.VerHagen was hit in the face by a relay throw from second base as he covered first base on a potential double play during the seventh inning Tuesday. A trip to the disabled list is likely for the 27-year-old after having his nose re-set, especially with the Tigers already wanting to recall a pitcher from Triple-A Toledo for Wednesday's game.
Jun 19 2018VerHagen exited Tuesday's game against the Reds after being hit in the face by a throw, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.VerHagen was covering first base on a potential double play in the seventh inning, and was struck in the face as he was unable to field the relay throw from second base. The 27-year-old was diagnosed with a nasal bruise and was undergoing X-rays to determine the severity of the injury.
Jun 7 2018VerHagen is expected to work out of the bullpen during the Tigers' weekend series with the Indians after manager Ron Gardenhire named Artie Lewicki as the team's starter for Sunday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.Due to a doubleheader Monday against the Yankees, VerHagen was summoned from Triple-A Toledo and made his first start of the season with the big club, giving up seven runs on seven hits and two walks in 3.2 innings. With Jordan Zimmermann (shoulder) and Francisco Liriano (hamstring) both set to remain on the disabled list through the weekend, VerHagen could have made a case to stick in the rotation for one more turn with a strong showing Monday. Since VerHagen fared poorly in that outing, it was likely an easy decision for Gardenhire to give another start to Lewicki, who filled in for Liriano on Tuesday against the Red Sox and also lasted only 3.2 innings, but limited the damage to four runs (two earned). VerHagen seems unlikely to stick around in the Tigers bullpen for long, regardless of how he performs in his subsequent appearances.
Jun 4 2018VerHagen (0-2) took the loss in Game 1 of Monday's doubleheader against the Yankees, giving up seven earned runs on seven hits over 3.2 innings. He walked two and struck out two.VerHagen had been pitching well as a starter with Triple-A Toledo recently, compiling a 1.32 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 41:8 K:BB in 27.1 innings, but he struggled mightily against one of the better lineups in the majors. The 27-year-old was done in by three home runs, including a three-run shot by Austin Romine in the fourth inning. With rotation members Francisco Liriano (hamstring) and Jordan Zimmermann (shoulder) both expected to remain on the disabled list until at least next week, VerHagen could get another turn this weekend, though he'll have to pitch better if he wants to stick around with the Tigers past that.
Jun 4 2018The Tigers selected VerHagen's contract from Triple-A Toledo ahead of his scheduled start Monday in Game 1 of the doubleheader against the Yankees, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.Since being dropped from the 40-man roster in late April, VerHagen has emerged as a dominant arm in the Toledo rotation, submitting a 1.32 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 41:8 K:BB in 27.1 innings. The right-hander's track record as both a starter and reliever in the majors has been far more checkered, however, so it will be difficult to stream him with much confidence against one of baseball's top offenses. If VerHagen acquits himself well in the difficult matchup, he could earn a second start in the Tigers' weekend series against the Indians with rotation members Francisco Liriano (hamstring) and Jordan Zimmermann (shoulder) both expected to remain on the disabled list until at least next week.
Apr 30 2018VerHagen will join the rotation in Triple-A Toledo, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.VerHagen has made 73 career major-league appearances, just three of them starts. He started 19 games for Toledo last season and will start there again for the time being. The Tigers aren't particularly deep in their rotation, but VerHagen's career 5.04 ERA hardly makes him an enticing candidate for a starting role.
Apr 27 2018VerHagen was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma after passing through waivers unclaimed.VerHagen was recently designated for assignment by the Tigers on Monday. Over nine appearances with the big-league club this season, he's posted a 6.30 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with an 11:7 K:BB. The right-hander will continue to serve as organizational bullpen depth.
Mar 14 2018VerHagen blew a Tigers lead in Tuesday's 2-2 tie with the Yankees in Grapefruit League play. He yielded two runs on two hits and a walk over 1.1 innings while striking out three batters in the outing.VerHagen's box-score line obscures how dominant he was in the seventh inning, when he struck out the Yankees' new Murderers' Row of Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Gary Sanchez in succession. The right-hander wasn't able to carry that momentum into the eighth inning and retired just one of the four batters he faced in the frame, but his showing earlier in the contest is a prime example of why the Tigers are earmarking him for a prominent setup role this season. Given the control issues closer Shane Greene has exhibited throughout his career, it's not difficult to see him losing the ninth-inning gig at some point and opening the door for VerHagen or another hard-throwing reliever to step in.
Sep 28 2017VerHagen (0-3) was tagged with the loss and a blown save in Wednesday's game against the Royals. He gave up two earned runs on two hits and retired just a single batter.VerHagen gave up a two-run home run to Paulo Orlando in the seventh inning that put Kansas City up 4-3. The 26-year-old now has an uninspiring 5.85 ERA and 1.52 WHIP, and he likely won't be much of a fantasy contributor in 2018.
Aug 13 2017Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said VerHagen would be available in long relief Sunday against the Twins, indicating that the right-hander won't stick around in the rotation, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.VerHagen has made two spot starts in place of Michael Fulmer (elbow), conceding eight runs on 13 hits and three walks over 8.2 innings in those outings. With Fulmer in line to come off the disabled list to start Monday's series opener against the Rangers, the Tigers aren't likely to deploy a six-man rotation in the upcoming week, so VerHagen should stick in the bullpen for the short term. He could be demoted to Triple-A Toledo on Monday in a corresponding move to Fulmer's activation.
Aug 10 2017VerHagen (0-2) took the loss to the Pirates on Thursday. He gave up six runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out one batter over 3.2 innings. After taking a step forward in his last start, VerHagen took two steps back in this one -- he gave up runs in four straight innings to begin the game before being pulled. Five of the nine hits against him went for extra bases, and VerHagen also uncorked a wild pitch. The Tigers have not announced any rotation changes, but it would make sense if they turned elsewhere in the near future, if not for the next turn.
Aug 5 2017VerHagen (0-1) allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three across five innings, but received no decision Saturday against the Orioles.VerHagen entered the fifth inning with a 2-1 lead before giving up a solo homer to Adam Jones, leading to his no decision. With the Tigers dealing with injuries in their rotation, it seems as if he'll be able to continue making starts, but since he posted just a 4.90 ERA at Triple-A Toledo this year, it might not be wise to have great expectations for him. He'll make his next start Thursday against the Pirates.
Aug 4 2017VerHagen will get the start Saturday against Baltimore, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports.VerHagen has appeared twice out of Detroit's bullpen and has allowed three home runs in just four innings of work. With Michael Fulmer and Daniel Norris both on the disabled list, the Tigers are desperate. VerHagen had just a 4.90 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP over 19 starts for Triple-A Toledo this year, so expectations should be low.
Jul 23 2017VerHagen was called up to the Tigers on Sunday, MLive.com reports. The right-hander will provide support to the Tigers' bullpen, which was used heavily across a seven-game road trip. VerHagen, who battled thoracic outlet syndrome in his throwing arm for a good chunk of 2016, reportedly asked the team to work as a starter rather than a reliever heading into this season, and as such, he's made 19 starts with Triple-A Toledo. During that span, he's gone 7-7 with a pedestrian 4.90 ERA and 69:43 K:BB in just under 100 (97.1) innings. He has yet to appear in a game this year for the Tigers, however.
Mar 18 2017VerHagen was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Saturday, MLive.com reports.VerHagen is expected to join the Mud Hens' rotation. The 26-year-old underwent thoracic outlet syndrome surgery on his shoulder last July, and he's still working his way back to full strength. VerHagen struggled before the surgery last season, but he posted a 2.05 ERA across 26.1 MLB innings in 2015 and could get the call sometime this season if he pitches well in Toledo.
Feb 28 2017VerHagen (shoulder) allowed four earned runs off five hits over 1.2 innings in his 2017 Grapefruit League debut Tuesday.VerHagen clearly had a rough time in his first game of the spring season, and two of the four hits he surrendered were home runs. VerHagen was used out of the bullpen Tuesday, although it was previously reported that the Tigers wanted to give him experience as a starter. However, poor showings such as this don't bode well for the 26-year-old's already slim chances to earn a spot at the back end of Detroit's rotation for the upcoming season.
Feb 14 2017VerHagen will work as a starter in spring training, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.VerHagen has worked exclusively as a reliever the last two seasons for the Tigers, but he said he feels more comfortable starting. VerHagen likely won't crack Detroit's rotation to start the season, but his work during the spring could make him a guy the Tigers use for multiple innings of relief. He could also start the year in Triple-A Toledo's rotation.
Feb 1 2017VerHagen (shoulder) recently threw a pair of bullpen sessions and didn't report any soreness, Anthony French of the Detroit Free Press reports. This is a big step forward for VerHagen, who threw off a mound for the first time since undergoing thoracic outlet syndrome surgery last July. VerHagen struggled before the surgery last season, but he posted a 2.05 ERA across 26.1 MLB innings in 2015 and could be a useful member of the Detroit bullpen if his rehab continues to go well.
Jan 23 2017VerHagen (shoulder) will throw off a mound this week, MLB.com's Jason Beck reports. This will mark the first time he's thrown off of a mound since undergoing thoracic outlook syndrome surgery last July. Despite a rough year in 2016, posting a 7.11 ERA over 19.0 innings, the righty should be ready to compete for a roster spot come spring training.
Nov 4 2016VerHagen (shoulder) was reinstated from the 60-day disabled list Friday.VerHagen underwent thoracic outlet surgery in July, although it's unclear how far he is in his recovery process. Regardless, the right-hander now has his spot on the 40-man roster back and will likely be ready to compete for a bullpen spot from the beginning of spring training.
Jul 27 2016VerHagen will undergo season-ending thoracic outlet surgery, Katie Strang of ESPN reports.VerHagen was expected to make a return in August, however his injury turned out to be more serious. Recovery periods from this type of surgery can range anywhere from 1-to-6 months, so VerHagen should be ready for spring training next season if there are no complications.
Jun 20 2016VerHagen (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day DL on Monday.VerHagen will miss a significant amount of time due to his shoulder injury, and is looking at a return sometime in August barring any set backs. The 25-year-old has struggled all season, posting an awful 7.11 ERA with a 1.84 WHIP in 19 appearances.
Jun 17 2016VerHagen was placed on the 15-day DL on Friday with right shoulder thoracic outlet syndrome. He has been out since May 22, and now it is clear what has been ailing him. This is a blow to the Tigers' bullpen depth and it is unclear when VerHagen will be eligible to return. Consider him out indefinitely for now.
May 22 2016VerHagen was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Sunday.VerHagen had a poor outing Friday against the Orioles, giving up three earned runs in one inning. He'll head to Toledo with a 6.50 ERA through 18 games. Buck Farmer was recalled to take VerHagen's roster spot.
May 20 2016VerHagen was roughed up Saturday, giving up three earned runs over 1.0 innings against Baltimore.VerHagen has had a rough go at it so far in 2016 as he's now given up three or more earned runs three times this year. 12 of the 25-year-old's 17 appearances have been scoreless, however, so there are some positives to be said for for the righty's season.
Apr 18 2016VerHagen has pitched well in relief early this season, but one bad outing against the Pirates last week have ballooned his WHIP to 2.00.He allowed more hits (five) in 0.2 innings against the Pirates than he has in 5.1 innings (six appearances; four hits total). At 6-foot-6, VerHagen has the potential to have his pitches arrive on top of hitters quickly, but he hasn't overpowered anyone so far. He has just a single strikeout to his resume and that was in his first appearance. VerHagen will boot around the pen in the middle innings, at least for now, and his peripherals just don't warrant ownership at this point.
Mar 13 2016VerHagen is almost a sure bet to crack Detroit's Opening Day roster as a member of the bullpen, but his role is still up in the air, reports MLive.com."He could do anything," manager Brad Ausmus said. "If he pitches like we think he can, he could probably pitch and spell one of our back-end guys for a day if they needed a rest. He also has the ability to pitch multiple innings, if we needed to get from the fifth to the seventh." It's clear Ausmus will keep VerHagen in a relief role and he could be a source of holds this season.
Sep 28 2015VerHagen has ground out two holds in the last week and now sits with a 2.38 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 22.2 innings out of the Tigers' bullpen. Opponents are hitting just .218 off him. He's not whiffing guys, but instead is relying on a sinker that induces a lot of ground ball outs. We'd like to see him get a handle on his control, though, as he's racked up more walks (13) than strikeouts (11).
Aug 19 2015VerHagen was recalled from Triple-A on Wednesday, Matthew Mowery of the Oakland Press reports.VerHagen will return to Detroit for the first time in more than a month to help bolster a bullpen that pitched 6.9 innings in Tuesday's win over Boston. In his lone appearance for the Tigers on the season, VerHagen allowed one hit and two earned runs while issuing four walks in one inning.
Jul 5 2015VerHagen was optioned to Triple-A Toledo after Sunday's game against the Blue Jays, Matthew Mowery of The Oakland Press reports. It appears VerHagen will be the scapegoat for another poor outing by Justin Verlander, as he provided little relief Sunday, allowing two runs on a hit and four walks in his one inning of duty. Ian Krol was recalled from Toledo to take VerHagen's place in the bullpen.
Jul 3 2015VerHagen was recalled from Double-A Erie on Friday. The 24-year-old righty will take a spot in the middle of the Tigers' bullpen and is unlikely to see many high-leverage looks. He gave up three runs in a five-inning spot start with the Tigers earlier this year but has been working as a reliever at Triple-A and Double-A, notching eight strikeouts in 11 innings of relief.
Feb 20 2015VerHagen will be stretched out as a starter during spring training, the Detroit News reports.Along with Kyle Lobstein, VerHagen is slated to offer depth to the Tigers' rotation as a likely starter at Triple-A Toledo to begin the year. Long term, VerHagen projects as a sinkerballing innings eater, as he's frequently able to induce weak contact even though he doesn't get opposing hitters to whiff often.
Aug 31 2014VerHagen will be called up from Triple-A Toledo and transferred to the 60-day DL prior to Tuesday's game against the Indians, MLive.com's Chris Iott reports.Moving VerHagen to the 60-day DL on the major league roster will allow the Tigers to add catcher James McCann to their 40-man roster as a September call-up. VerHagen supplied a 3.67 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 110.1 innings at Toledo prior to seeing his season end due to injury.
Jul 22 2014VerHagen was placed on the disabled list at Triple-A Toledo retroactive to July 20 on Tuesday, the Toledo Blade reports. The reason for the DL placement is unknown at this time, but VerHagen made his major league debut in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Indians. He allowed three runs on five hits over five innings and did not appear to have suffered an injury. However, he'll head to the DL with the chance to return early in August. Kenny Faulk was promoted to Triple-A to fill the spot of VerHagen in the meantime.
Jul 19 2014VerHagen gave up three runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out four over five innings, and was stuck with the loss in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Indians. It all fell apart for VerHagen in the fifth inning of his major league debut, as he game up four hits and a walk in the frame after he allowed just three baserunners through his first four innings. The 23-year-old will likely head right back down to Triple-A Toledo, where he's posted a rather modest 3.67 ERA and 5.1 K/9 in 19 starts (110.1 innings) this season.
Jul 17 2014VerHagen will be called up to start the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Indians, George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press reports.GM Dave Dombrowski discussed the decision to give VerHagen the start over Robbie Ray, saying VerHagen "has thrown well for us recently" whereas Ray has been "a little messed up mechanically." In 19 starts for Toledo this season, VerHagen has posted a 3.67 ERA with a 63:25 K:BB in 110.1 innings, but he's put up a 2.79 ERA in three July starts. It was initially reported that he would start Game 2 as the 26th man, but he's now penciled in to start the first game, with Max Scherzer to follow in the nightcap.
Jul 16 2014VerHagen will be promoted in order to pitch in the second game of the Tigers' doubleheader Saturday versus the Indians, MLive.com reports. In 19 starts at Triple-A Toledo this season, VerHagen has posted a 6-7 record, 3.67 ERA, 1.287 WHIP, and 63:25 K:BB across 110.1 innings. He got the nod over fellow Mud Hen Robbie Ray, but it's unclear if VerHagen will start with Max Scherzer already penciled into that spot on the schedule.
