Jun 11 2024The White Sox transferred Leone (elbow) to the 60-day injured list Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone landed on the injured list in late May due to right elbow inflammation, and his move to the 60-day IL ensures he'll be sidelined through the All-Star break. The 32-year-old still does not have a timetable for his return, and his spot on the 40-man roster will be given to Drew Thorpe, whose contract was selected from Double-A on Tuesday.
May 24 2024The White Sox placed Leone on the 15-day injured list Friday with right elbow inflammation. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone returned from a bout of lower-back tightness this week but will return to the injured list after making just one appearance for Chicago. It's unclear how long the veteran right-hander is expected to be sidelined.
May 20 2024The White Sox activated Leone (back) from the 15-day injured list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone wound up needing just a minimum stay on the IL with lower-back tightness and will skip a rehab assignment and go right back into the bullpen. The veteran reliever holds a 6.75 ERA and 14:11 K:BB over 14.2 innings this season.
May 19 2024Leone (back) appears set to be activated from the 15-day injured list Monday, James Fegan of SoxMachine.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone has been on the shelf since May 6 with lower-back tightness, but he looks primed to be back in Chicago's bullpen after the minimum 15-day stay on the injured list. Right-hander Brad Keller was designated for assignment Sunday, opening a spot on the major-league roster for Leone once he's activated.
May 13 2024White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said Monday that Leone (back) will begin throwing live batting practice sessions soon, James Fegan of SoxMachine.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone isn't expected to require a rehab assignment before being activated from the 15-day injured list, which should come early next week when he's first eligible.
May 6 2024The White Sox placed Leone on the 15-day injured list Monday with lower-back tightness. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone tweaked his back during an appearance Saturday in St. Louis and now will be on the shelf for at least the next couple weeks. The veteran reliever holds a 6.75 ERA and 14:11 K:BB over 14.2 relief innings with the White Sox this season.
May 4 2024Leone was removed from Saturday's game against the Cardinals due to lower-back tightness, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone entered the game in the eighth inning and was only able to get through one batter -- a five-pitch walk to Nolan Arenado -- before coming out of the game. The team officially labeled Leone as day-to-day, so his injury doesn't seem to be too severe, but the 32-year-old righty may take a few days off before pitching again.
Apr 3 2024Leone won't start Wednesday against Atlanta after the game was postponed due to inclement weather in Chicago. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone had been scheduled to open Wednesday's game on the mound in what was set to be a bullpen day for Chicago, but as a result of the postponement, the game will be made up June 27. The White Sox will return to action Thursday in Kansas City, with Michael Soroka scheduled to start that contest and Leone set to return to his familiar bullpen role.
Mar 27 2024The White Sox selected Leone's contract from Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone was in camp as a non-roster invitee but made the team after giving up just two earned runs over eight innings this spring. The veteran reliever could even find himself in high-leverage spots as part of a bullpen that lacks clarity.
Feb 13 2024Leone signed a minor-league contract with White Sox on Tuesday which includes an invitation to major-league spring training, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander made 51 appearances between the Mariners, Angels and Mets last season but scuffled to a 4.67 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 54:28 K:BB over 54 innings. Leone posted a 1.51 ERA with three saves and 15 holds in 57 outings for the Giants in 2021, but his 1.51 WHIP across the past two seasons is likely to be more indicative of his 2024 performance, if he makes Chicago's roster.
Aug 31 2023Leone was claimed off waivers by the Mariners on Thursday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone holds a 4.74 ERA and 44:20 K:BB across 43.2 innings of relief work for the Mets and Angels this season. It's a homecoming of sorts for Leone, who came up in the Mariners system and debuted for them back in 2014. He will be used in middle relief for the American League West leaders.
Aug 29 2023The Angels placed Leone on waivers Tuesday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone put up a 5.25 ERA and 1.83 WHIP across 12 innings since being acquired from the Mets at the trade deadline, and he'll now join five other Angels on the waiver wire as the team attempts to cut salary. Any team in search of bullpen depth will be able to simply claim the 31-year-old righty off waivers and add him to their active roster.
Aug 8 2023Leone picked up the save Tuesday against the Giants. He allowed one run on one hit while striking out one over two innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone was picked up by the Halos at the beginning of August via trade and converted on his first save opportunity of the season. While he's expected to remain a middle reliever moving forward, Leone owns a 1.80 ERA and a 19:6 K:BB over his last 15 appearances (15 innings), and he could be a name to monitor for high-leverage work if Carlos Estevez's struggles persist.
Aug 1 2023The Mets traded Leone to the Angels on Tuesday in exchange for infielder Jeremiah Jackson, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone's overall numbers don't look great, but he's pitched to a 1.80 ERA over his last 12 appearances dating back to late June. The 31-year-old right-hander will likely slide into a middle-relief role with the playoff-hopeful Halos.
Jun 15 2023Leone (1-2) picked up the win in Wednesday's victory over the Yankees, walking one and striking out one in a scoreless 10th inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander needed 11 pitches (eight strikes) to get through the top of the frame, with his free pass being of the intentional variety. Leone has settled into a middle-relief role with the Mets, getting scored upon only once in his last eight appearances and posting a 1.93 ERA, 0.64 WHIP and 10:2 K:BB through 9.1 innings over that stretch, but his lack of high-leverage usage limits his fantasy appeal -- he has zero saves or holds on the season.
Jun 5 2023Leone (0-2) took the loss Sunday against the Blue Jays, allowing two runs on two hits over 1.1 innings in a 6-4 defeat. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After the Mets tied the game in the sixth inning, Leone surrendered a two-run homer to Brandon Belt that would prove to be the difference in the loss. The 31-year-old Leone had been pitching well prior to Sunday, delivering four consecutive scoreless appearances while punching out seven over 4.1 innings. He now sports a 5.40 ERA with a 1.43 WHIP and 11:3 K:BB across 13.1 innings this season.
May 14 2023Leone (undisclosed) was the pitcher of record in Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Nationals in the first game of a doubleheader after he gave up one run on three hits in two innings out of the bullpen. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone experienced discomfort while warming up in the bullpen Friday, but his ability to cover two innings a day later implies that he's healthy again. The right-hander's appearance will officially be listed as having occurred Saturday, since the Mets and Nationals had their game suspended that day before they resumed the contest Sunday in the third inning with the score tied 1-1.
May 12 2023Leone felt discomfort while warming up in the bullpen against the Nationals on Saturday and is being evaluated, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone did not come in to pitch after feeling the discomfort with Drew Smith getting the final out and picking up the save. For now, Leone should be considered day-to-day.
May 4 2023Leone signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Mets on Thursday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone opted out of his minor-league contract with the Rangers on Tuesday and quickly landed a major-league deal with New York. The veteran reliever will provide a much-needed fresh arm for the Mets' bullpen.
Feb 18 2023Leone (elbow) joined the Rangers as a non-roster invitee Saturday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone recorded a passable 4.01 ERA in 49.1 innings for the Giants last year before ending the season on the injured list due to elbow inflammation. Assuming he's fully healthy, he'll compete for a lower-leverage relief role in camp.
Sep 10 2022Leone (elbow) was placed on unconditional release waivers Saturday, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone landed on the 15-day injured list with an elbow injury Friday, but he'll be let go by the team a day later. It's not yet clear whether he'll be healthy enough to return to action prior to the end of the season if he's able to land a contract with another organization.
Sep 9 2022Leone (elbow) was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone is dealing with inflammation in his right elbow and will spend at least 15 days on the injured list because of it. An exact return date is not yet known and will likely depend on how he recovers.
Aug 27 2022Leone (4-5) took the extra-inning loss Saturday versus the Twins. He allowed an unearned run on three walks in one-third of an inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone got the first out with a sacrifice, but that was his only success in this outing. He walked the next three batters, loading the bases and eventually forcing in the decisive run. Through 8.2 innings in August, Leone has allowed six runs (five earned) with an 11:7 K:BB. He has a 4.20 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 49:21 K:BB through 45 innings this year, adding three saves, 11 holds and four blown saves while maintaining a high-leverage role despite the lackluster ratios.
Aug 21 2022Leone (4-4) allowed a hit and a walk while striking out one in two-thirds of a scoreless inning, earning the extra-innings win over the Rockies on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone cleaned things up after Alex Young allowed the Rockies to tie the game again in the 10th inning. The Giants went ahead again in the 11th, and Leone ended up with the win after Zack Littell closed out the contest. Through 7.1 innings in August, Leone has allowed five runs, 11 hits and three walks with nine strikeouts. He has a 4.33 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 47:17 K:BB through 43.2 innings overall, and he's added three saves, 11 holds and four blown saves while functioning as part of the setup mix ahead of closer Camilo Doval.
Aug 18 2022Leone (3-4) allowed two runs on three hits and struck out one in one inning, taking the loss Wednesday versus the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone gave up a single to Christian Walker and a double to Stone Garrett before allowing a two-run single to Jake McCarthy in the eighth inning. The Giants' offense couldn't bail him out, sending Leone to a loss for the first time since July 24. In 9.1 innings since the All-Star break, the setup man has struggled, allowing nine runs, 13 hits and four walks while striking out 10. He has a 4.50 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 45:16 K:BB while adding three saves, 11 holds and four blown saves in 42 innings this year. Considering his recent form, Leone is not a realistic threat to unseat closer Camilo Doval.
Jul 30 2022Leone allowed a run on one hit over one inning, but he earned the save in Saturday's 5-4 win over the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Yunior Marte got into trouble in the ninth inning, putting two on with no outs. Leone entered the game and allowed a single to load the bases. The Cubs were able to rally for three runs, with one charge to Leone on a Seiya Suzuki groundout, but the comeback effort fell just short. This was Leone's third save of the season, and he's added 11 holds and three blown saves in 40 appearances. The right-hander has a 3.96 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 38:14 K:BB through 36.1 innings. He'll likely be unavailable Sunday since he's pitched three days in a row.
Jul 24 2022Leone (3-3) allowed a run on one hit in two-thirds of an inning, taking the loss Sunday versus the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone was responsible for the first of the Dodgers' three runs in the seventh inning, and that was enough to stick the reliever with his second loss in as many outings. He's given up three runs in one inning across two appearances since the All-Star break, though that could be a product of facing the Dodgers' formidable offense. For the season, Leone has a 3.97 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 36:12 K:BB with 10 holds, two saves and three blown saves in 34 innings.
Jul 22 2022Leone (3-2) allowed two runs on two hits and struck out one in two-thirds of an inning, taking the loss Thursday versus the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Giants pulled ahead in the top of the eighth inning, but Leone couldn't protect the one-run advantage. He gave up a double to Gavin Lux and a triple to Trayce Thompson. Jarlin Garcia then gave up a three-run home run, with the decisive run charged to Leone. Between the start of June and the All-Star break, Leone posted a 3.68 ERA in 14.2 innings, but he started the second half in shaky form against a tough team. The right-hander has a 3.78 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 36:12 K:BB, two saves, 10 holds and three blown saves through 33.1 innings this year.
Jul 16 2022Leone allowed a hit and struck out one in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Saturday's 2-1 win over the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone navigated the ninth inning on 11 pitches (eight strikes) to pick up his second save of the year. It's an interesting choice from manager Gabe Kapler -- Camilo Doval didn't pitch Friday, but he's struggled lately. Leone has now pitched three consecutive scoreless innings since a four-run blow-up July 5 versus the Diamondbacks. He could be in line to become the primary setup man or even challenge for the closer role, as Jake McGee was designated for assignment last Saturday and Tyler Rogers has moved into a middle-relief role. Leone has a sharp 3.31 ERA, but his 1.44 WHIP and 35:12 K:BB in 32.2 innings could surface as control issues, though he's also picked up 10 holds and a 3-1 record.
Jul 5 2022Leone (3-1) took the loss Tuesday versus the Diamondbacks. He was charged with four runs on two hits and two hits with one strikeout in one-third of an inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone had a one-run lead to protect in the eighth inning. He struggled with command and threw a pair of wild pitches before he was replaced by Camilo Doval, who gave up a three-run home run to Daulton Varsho. The poor outing from Leone stands in contrast to his steady June (1.74 ERA in 10.1 innings). He's still surrendering too many baserunners, as evidenced by his 1.48 WHIP to go with a 3.64 ERA and 33:11 K:BB across 29.2 innings this year. He's added a save, 10 holds and two blown saves as a high-leverage option, though Leone is still unlikely to get regular save chances.
Jun 22 2022Leone allowed two hits and struck out one in a scoreless inning to pick up a hold in Tuesday's 12-10 win over Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone has emerged as more of a high-leverage option in June, recording five of his nine holds this season in his nine appearances this month. In that span, he's given up one run on nine hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in 8.2 innings. For the season, the veteran right-hander owns a steady 2.36 ERA with a 1.28 WHIP and 29:5 K:BB in 26.2 innings. He's added a save, a blown save and a 3-0 record, though he's likely to be fourth at best in the bullpen hierarchy behind Camilo Doval, Jake McGee and Tyler Rogers.
Jun 5 2022Leone pitched a perfect inning to earn a hold in Sunday's 5-1 win over the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone protected a three-run lead in the seventh inning to extend his scoreless streak to 4.1 innings. He's picked a win in that span and owns a 3-0 record, 2.84 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 22:3 K:BB, five holds and a save through 20 appearances this year. He's often worked in the middle innings, but he's shown he can succeed in some high-leverage spots as well.
May 25 2022Leone surrendered two runs on two hits with one strikeout in one inning during Tuesday's 13-12 win over the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone was responsible for a two-run home run to Francisco Lindor in the seventh inning that started the Mets' late-innings push. This was the first time Leone's surrendered multiple runs in an appearance. The right-hander has a 3.68 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 17:2 K:BB, one save, four holds and a blown save in 14.2 innings this season. He's already allowed three homers in 2022 after giving up just two in 57 appearances in 2021.
May 8 2022Leone (2-0) allowed a run on one hit and a walk with one strikeout in one inning, earning the win Sunday versus the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone allowed the game-tying run in the top of the sixth inning on a Harrison Bader groundout. The Giants then retook the lead in their half of the frame with a Mike Yastrzemski solo home run. This was Leone's third run allowed in his last four outings, though one of those runs was unearned. The right-hander has a 3.00 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, 11:2 K:BB, one save and two holds through nine innings this season. He's allowing a lot of hits early in the season, but he hasn't often been punished for those mistakes.
May 7 2022Leone (illness) was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list Saturday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone tested positive for COVID-19 in late April and spent just over a week away from the team. However, he'll be available out of the bullpen for Saturday's matchup against the Cardinals. The right-hander has recorded a save and two holds with a 2.57 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in seven innings over his first nine relief appearances in 2022.
Apr 17 2022Leone (1-0) earned the win in relief Saturday against the Guardians after tossing a scoreless inning, striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone has now tossed three straight scoreless outings, allowing one hit and striking out five with no walks during that span. He already has one win, one hold and one save through four outings, and while he might not be a primary candidate for save situations, he should be in line for high-leverage work -- especially if he can continue pitching like this going forward.
Apr 10 2022Leone struck out two in a perfect ninth inning to earn the save in Sunday's win over the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone was credited with a hold in Friday's season opener despite allowing a run in one-third of an inning, but he picked up the save with a much cleaner outing in Sunday's series finale. His usage in the save situation was surprising, since Jake McGee, Camilo Doval and Tyler Rogers figure to be the top candidates for ninth-inning work this year. McGee and Doval both pitched in the first two games of the season, so they were likely unavailable Sunday. Although McGee, Doval and Rogers should see the bulk of the save chances this year, it's encouraging to see that Leone has the trust of manager Gabe Kapler when needed in high-leverage situations.
Sep 30 2021Leone (4-5) allowed a hit and struck out one in a scoreless inning to earn the win Wednesday over Arizona. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander kept Arizona off the board in the seventh inning and then became the pitcher of record when Kris Bryant's sacrifice fly plated the lone run. Leone has been effective and a little unlucky in September, allowing five runs (two earned) across 14 innings. He's emerged as a high-leverage option this year with a 1.59 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 46:21 K:BB, two saves and 14 holds through 51 innings.
Sep 24 2021Leone (3-5) allowed an unearned run on a hit and a walk to take the loss Thursday versus San Diego. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was unable to escape a jam in the 10th inning that saw two runners in scoring position with one out. Leone hasn't had many missteps this year, but three of his five losses have come in September. The 29-year-old owns a 1.65 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 44:21 K:BB across 49 innings and he should continue to work in a high-leverage role.
Sep 18 2021Leone earned the save in Saturday's 2-0 triumph over Atlanta, allowing one hit in the ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With closer Jake McGee on the IL, manager Gabe Kapler turned to Leone to lock down San Francisco's 97th victory. Look for the 29-year-old to remain a key piece in the Giants' pen with a 1.80 ERA in September and a 1.72 mark for the year.
Sep 16 2021Leone (3-4) gave up two runs on two hits while striking out one over one-third of an inning to take the loss against San Diego on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander had excelled in his previous stints as an opener, but he couldn't get it done against the Padres on Wednesday. Leone allowed a pair of hits to open the contest, and though he followed by striking out Manny Machado, both runners eventually came around to score after his departure. San Francisco is still dealing with a shorthanded rotation, so Leone could get another turn as an opener depending on when Alex Wood (COVID-19) and Johnny Cueto (elbow) are able to return to the rotation.
Sep 14 2021Leone will start Wednesday's game versus the Padres, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone will get a fourth turn as an opener, a role he's filled frequently in the last couple of weeks. He can be expected to cover 1-to-2 innings in the contest, which is essentially another bullpen game as manager Gabe Kapler deals with a shorthanded rotation. Through 7.2 innings in September, Leone has allowed two unearned runs on two hits and two walks while striking out four over 7.2 innings.
Sep 13 2021Leone allowed a hit and struck out one batter in two scoreless innings as the opener in Monday's win over San Diego. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone needed just 18 pitches (15 strikes) to roll through two shutout frames in Monday's victory. It didn't hurt that the Giants' offense racked up five runs in the first inning. The 29-year-old lowered his ERA to 1.41 through 46 appearances this season and has given up just one earned run over his last 14 innings.
Sep 11 2021Leone pitched two perfect innings as the opener in Friday's 6-1 win over Chicago. He struck out two and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Friday was just the second multi-inning appearance of the year for Leone, but he delivered strong work in his second turn as an opener. He's produced excellent ratios this year with a 1.48 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 40:20 K:BB across 42.2 innings. Leone could see additional opening opportunities while Alex Wood (COVID-19) and Johnny Cueto (elbow) remain unavailable, as manager Gabe Kapler has shown little hesitation to use a bullpen game to address an understaffed rotation.
Sep 10 2021Leone will be the first pitcher on the mound for what's expected to be a bullpen game Friday against the Cubs, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone made the first start of his eight-year career Sunday as part of a similar setup. He threw just a single inning in that game and has recorded more than three outs in just one of his 44 appearances this season, so don't expect him to throw much more than one frame Friday.
Sep 5 2021Leone pitched a perfect inning in Sunday's 6-4 win over the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old was called upon to start San Francisco's second consecutive bullpen game, and he got the job done in the first inning. Leone did not factor in the decision, as he hasn't worked more than one inning since his second appearance of the year back in June. He's been good in a high-leverage role with a 1.82 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 38:20 K:BB across 39.2 innings while adding a save, 13 holds and a 3-3 record this year.
Sep 2 2021Leone (3-3) was tagged with the loss in relief Wednesday against Milwaukee after allowing one run on one hit and one walk while fanning one across two-thirds of an inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone pitched the seventh inning and quickly retired Luis Urias and Rowdy Tellez for the first two outs, but the wheels came off thereafter. He walked Lorenzo Cain and allowed a Jackie Bradley single in the next at-bat and departed with runners on the corners before exiting. Ultimately, Cain would end up scoring, and as a result, Leone was tagged with the loss despite retiring the first two batter he faced. The right-hander has now given up runs in each of his last two appearances but still owns a decent 2.70 ERA across 13.1 innings (16 outings) since the beginning of August.
Aug 22 2021Leone (3-2) fired a perfect seventh inning while striking out two, earning the win over the Athletics on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone entered the game with the Giants down a run in the seventh inning and retired the side in order. The Giants took the lead in the next inning, giving him the win. He has allowed just two runs in 13 innings over his last 15 appearances. The 29-year-old has a 1.57 ERA and 1.02 WHIP with 36 strikeouts in 34.1 innings this season.
Aug 18 2021Leone earned the save Tuesday against the Mets after striking out the only batter he faced. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone had the task of recording the final out of the game after Jarlin Garcia retired two batters and allowed a hit in the top of the ninth. The right-hander struck out Kevin Pillar on three pitches and earned his first save of the season as a result, though he's only gone 1-for-3 in save opportunities. He also has 10 holds while posting an excellent 1.72 ERA across 31.1 innings, so he should continue to see high-leverage work even if he's not going to have many save chances going forward.
Aug 15 2021Leone (2-2) allowed two earned runs on two hits and one walk while recording just one out, taking the loss to the Rockies on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone entered the sixth inning in a tie game. He allowed the first three batters to reach base safely, leading to a pair of runs. He had nine scoreless innings over his last previous nine outings. The 29-year-old boasts a 1.76 ERA and 1.04 WHIP this season. In addition, he has a 9.4 K/9 over 30.2 innings.
Jul 29 2021Leone has allowed four runs (two earned) in his last four innings spanning five appearances. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In that span, the right-hander has yielded five hits and five walks while striking out five. He's had just one clean outing in that stretch. Leone has been solid in the middle innings with a 1.61 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, six holds and two blown saves across 22.1 innings, but he's experienced some regression after pitching incredibly after he was called up June 1.
Jul 10 2021Leone allowed a hit and a walk in a scoreless inning to earn a hold in Friday's 5-3 win over Washington. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone has emerged as a reliable arm in the bridge to the late-innings duo of Tyler Rogers and Jake McGee. Through 17 appearances, Leone has a 1.04 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 19:5 K:BB across 17.1 innings. He's added five holds, two blown saves and a 2-0 record. With an FIP of 2.59, the right-hander's success so far should be fairly sustainable, although he's limited opponents to a .195 BABIP that will likely tick higher in the second half of the season.
Jul 3 2021Leone (2-0) earned the win in Saturday's 6-5 triumph over the Diamondbacks, allowing a walk with two strikeouts in one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone pitched an easy seventh inning and was put in line for the win after Austin Slater smashed a two-run homer in the top of the eighth to give San Francisco a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The righty hasn't allowed a run in his last 12.1 innings and owns a sparkling 1.17 ERA.
Jun 23 2021Leone (1-0) allowed an unearned run on two hits and struck out one in one inning in Wednesday's extra-innings win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone yielded a game-tying RBI single to Juan Lugares in the bottom of the 12th inning. The right-hander became the pitcher of record when San Francisco's offense exploded for seven runs in the 13th. The win was Leone's first of the year in 11 appearances, and he's collected three holds. He's added a 1.54 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 14:3 K:BB across 11.2 innings. Leone could see some high-leverage work, but Jake McGee and Tyler Rogers have handled virtually all of the save chances this year.
Jun 19 2021Leone struck out two in a perfect inning to earn a hold in Friday's 5-3 win over Philadelphia. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was called up from Triple-A Sacramento on June 1, and he's delivered solid work out of the bullpen so far. Leone has a 2.08 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 10:3 K:BB across 8.2 innings. He's also seen some high-leverage work, recording three holds in eight appearances. He's found success with a 95.2 mph average velocity on his fastball, up from 94.8 last year, though he's had some luck in holding opposing batters to a .158 BABIP so far.
Jun 2 2021Leone allowed a hit and struck out two in a scoreless inning in Tuesday's 8-1 loss to the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone kept the blowout from getting worse in the ninth inning of the loss. The veteran right-hander last appeared in the majors with Cleveland, where he had an 8.38 ERA and 1.97 WHIP across 9.2 innings last season. He'll likely begin his San Francisco career in a low-leverage relief role.
Jun 1 2021The Giants selected Leone from Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, Kerry Crowley of reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The righty has excelled in nine Triple-A innings this year, posting a 1.00 ERA with 16 strikeouts and just three walks. Having pitched in 241 career games, Leone should provide added depth to the Giants bullpen.
Mar 30 2021The Giants reassigned Leone to their minor-league camp Tuesday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone was one of four non-roster relievers with previous big-league experience whom the Giants sent back to minor-league camp ahead of Opening Day. He spent 2020 with Cleveland, making 12 appearances out of the bullpen while giving up nine earned runs over 9.2 innings.
Sep 11 2020Leone was designated for assignment by the Indians on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander never found much consistency this season and had an 8.38 ERA and 1.97 WHIP while appearing in only 12 games. Leone could head to the team's alternate training site if he goes unclaimed on waivers.
Jul 22 2020Leone will begin the season on Cleveland's 30-man roster, Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone was a non-roster invitee during camp, but he impressed enough to earn a spot in the bullpen ahead of Opening Day on Friday. The right-hander is unlikely to serve in higher-leverage situations after posting a 5.53 ERA and 1.50 WHIP over 40.2 innings with the Cardinals in 2019.
Jan 23 2020Leone has signed a minor-league contract with the Indians. The deal includes an invitation to spring training. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone has found a new home after being let go by the Cardinals following the 2019 season, The reliever struggled during his two years in St. Louis, posting a combined 5.15 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 72:30 K:BB in 64.2 innings. Leone will look to break camp with the Indians in a middle-relief role.
Nov 25 2019Leone was released by St. Louis on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Leone will become a free agent after going unclaimed on waivers. He didn't have much success last season, posting a 5.53 ERA in 40.2 innings while walking 12.2 percent of opposing batters.

Jun 29 2018Leone (biceps) will start a throwing program Monday, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Leone recently began a strengthening program for his arm and will now progress into a throwing regime which is expected to last a couple weeks since he's been on the shelf for over four weeks. A return date remains unclear, but it seem unlikely that he will return before the All-Star break, especially considering the nerve issues he's been experiencing. Look for an update on his status once he resumes throwing.
Jun 20 2018Leone (biceps) is undergoing a strengthening program for his arm due to atrophy he's experienced because of nerve issues, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Leone has been on the 60-day disabled list since May 30, but he's been sidelined since a May 5 outing in which he experienced spasms in his throwing arm. The reliever is waiting for full nerve regeneration in his arm before he resumes throwing, so his recovery timeline remains murky for the time being.
Jun 2 2018Leone (biceps), who's currently on the 60-day disabled list, cannot be cleared to resume throwing until the damaged nerves in his right arm to self regenerate, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.Leone was forced out of a May 5 outing with spasms in his throwing arm, and nearly a month later, his timetable for picking up a baseball again remains a mystery. While the tingling and numbness he initially suffered from has subsided altogether, doctors aren't ready to clear him for any throwing due to insufficient nerve regeneration. In the interim, Leone continues to engage in a daily training regimen centered on conditioning, core work and massage therapy, along with some light arm strengthening and shoulder rehab. Given the nature of his injury and already extensive absence, Leone figures to eventually need multiple rehab outings before he's deemed ready for a return.
May 30 2018Leone (biceps) was moved to the 60-day disabled list Wednesday, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.Leone will head to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Alex Reyes, who's making his first start Wednesday following 2017 Tommy John surgery. Leone still doesn't have a clear timetable for his return after it was revealed that he's struggling with nerve damage in his upper arm. The 26-year-old right-hander has accrued a 4.15 ERA with 15 strikeouts and four holds over 13 innings this season.
May 18 2018Leone (biceps) will be sidelined indefinitely after the club revealed that he's dealing with nerve damage, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.Leone has been on the DL for the past two weeks after exiting a game against the Cubs on May 4 due to cramping in his right biceps. The Cardinals have remained relatively quiet regarding Leone's condition, but this recent news is obviously very concerning.
May 9 2018Leone (biceps) won't join the Cardinals on their seven-game road trip that begins Thursday in San Diego, Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Leone is eligible to return from the 10-day disabled list May 13, but he'll need more than the minimum amount of time while he continues to deal with a nerve issue in his upper arm. The Cardinals' medical staff is still uncertain about the extent of the setback, so Leone will likely be subject to additional testing and be barred from throwing until further notice. Leone, who opened the season as the Cardinals' leading closing candidate, blew his lone save chance before surrendering the gig and carries a 4.15 ERA and 1.38 WHIP across 13 innings.
May 6 2018Leone (biceps) was placed on the 10-day DL prior to Sunday's matchup against the Cubs.Leone left Friday's matchup due to biceps cramping during warmups, and it was reported Saturday that the issue would land the reliever on the disabled list. That move became official Sunday morning, with the team calling up right-hander Mike Mayers in a corresponding move to provide bullpen depth.
May 5 2018Leone (biceps) will hit the disabled list prior to Sunday's game, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.Manager Mike Matheny stated that the team didn't have enough time to put Leone on the disabled list prior to Saturday's game, so they will wait until Sunday to make the move. Leone suffered a nerve issue in his right biceps during Friday's outing against the Cubs. He was forced to exit the game before he even threw an official pitch, as the right-hander experienced a cramping sensation while warming up. He will be eligible to return from the DL on May 15. Expect an update on his status once the team is able to evaluate him further in the coming days.
May 4 2018Leone exited Friday's win over the Cubs due to right bicep cramps, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.Leone didn't actually throw a pitch in the contest, as he started cramping on the mound during his warm-up pitches. It doesn't appear to be a serious issue at this point, but the 26-year-old should still be considered day-to-day until evaluated Saturday.
May 3 2018Leone notched his fourth hold in a win over the White Sox on Wednesday despite allowing an earned run on a hit and a walk over a third of an inning.Tasked with preserving a 3-0 lead after taking over for Carlos Martinez with one on and one out in the eighth, Leone got his outing off to a rocky start by walking Yoan Moncada and allowing an RBI single to Yolmer Sanchez. He subsequently yielded a sacrifice fly to Jose Abreu before getting the hook, which narrowed the Cardinals' lead to just one run. Leone had been on an impressive run prior to Wednesday's stumble, as he'd generated eight scoreless appearances over his previous nine trips to the mound.
Apr 25 2018Leone fired 1.1 scoreless frames in an extra-innings loss to the Mets on Tuesday, allowing a hit while recording a strikeout.Leone got 10 of his 12 pitches into the strike zone while working at least one inning for the eighth time in 10 appearances. The 26-year-old right-hander has served as an effective middle-to-late-inning relief option for manager Mike Matheny for the majority of the season, now having generated five straight scoreless outings during which he's notched a win and two holds.
Apr 14 2018Leone grabbed his second hold in a 5-3 win over the Reds on Friday by getting one out on a pickoff at first base.Leone threw a scant three pitches to Devin Mesoraco while garnering his second hold of the season, and ultimately, he didn't even have to retire him to get his one out. The right-hander instead picked off inherited runner Joey Votto at first base, closing out the frame and preserving the Cardinals' 5-3 lead. The 26-year-old has had a couple of rocky outings thus far, but he's now generated scoreless efforts in four of his last five trips to the mound.
Apr 9 2018Leone (0-2) failed to get an out while allowing two earned runs on two hits in a 4-1 loss to the Diamondbacks on Sunday. It was all downhill from the start, as Leone allowed a leadoff single to the pinch-hitting Chris Owings, who then came home on David Peralta's 403-foot home run to right center. That constituted the extent of the right-hander's outing, a stark contrast to the 2.1 scoreless frames he'd fired against the Diamondbacks in two of the first three games of the four-game set. The 26-year-old's season has been a bit of a rollercoaster thus far, as he's weaved three scoreless efforts around a pair of outings where he's been touched up for two runs apiece.
Apr 8 2018Leone fired a scoreless sixth inning in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Diamondbacks, recording two strikeouts. That's three strong outings in four appearances for Leone, who's also racked up a pair of strikeouts in each of his trips to the mound. Despite what appears will be a relative dearth of save opportunities behind closer Greg Holland, Leone's ability to miss bats and surprisingly sharp control thus far affords him solid upside, particularly in NL-only formats.
Apr 6 2018Leone fired 1.1 scoreless innings in Thursday's 3-1 loss to the Diamondbacks, allowing two hits and recording a pair of strikeouts. He notched four outs on an efficient 18 pitches, 13 of which found the strike zone. Leone has sandwiched a pair of scoreless efforts around a ragged appearance against the Brewers on Tuesday in which he blew a save opportunity by allowing two earned runs on three hits over 1.1 innings. With projected closer Greg Holland set to tune up in the minors for a few games before making his 2018 debut, Leone may be afforded an additional save chance or two in the next week or so before likely reverting to a setup role.
Apr 3 2018Leone blew the save and took the loss on Tuesday, giving up two runs in his 1.1 innings of work as the Cardinals fell to the Brewers 5-4.Leone had the Brewers down to their last strike but coughed up a 4-3 ninth-inning lead after giving up back-to-back solo home runs to Christian Yelich and Ryan Braun in a wild 5-4 comeback victory for Milwaukee. Leone figures to have the closer job for the time being but the Cardinals' recent signing of Greg Holland will spell the end of his days in the role when he joins the big-league club.
Apr 2 2018Leone fired a scoreless ninth inning in Sunday's 5-1 win over the Mets, allowing a hit while recording two strikeouts.Leone was slated to share closing duties with lefty Tyler Lyons to open the season, but the recent signing of Greg Holland, who's currently prepping for the season in the minors, has altered those plans. The 26-year-old right-hander is still expected to see a solid allotment of late-inning work, but save chances are likely to be difficult to come by, especially considering that Luke Gregerson (hamstring) -- who has plenty of closing experience, as well -- will eventually be another potential impediment to ninth-inning opportunities.
Mar 26 2018Leone is expected to break camp as the Cardinals' primary closer after manager Mike Matheny acknowledged over the weekend that Luke Gregerson (hamstring) would open the season on the disabled list, Rick Hummel of St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Matheny hasn't formally announced his plans for the ninth inning and the possibility exists that southpaw Tyler Lyons could be deployed as closer on a situational basis, but Leone's dominant spring training -- during which he recorded three saves in as many chances -- should carry plenty of weight, especially with Gregerson on the shelf. Leone's exceptional Grapefruit League performance shouldn't merely be written off as a flash in the pan, as the right-hander proved adept in a key setup role for the Blue Jays in 2017, accruing a 2.56 ERA and 10.3 K/9 in 70.1 innings. Gregerson, who entered camp as the top candidate for closing duties, is without a clear timetable for a return, so Leone might have the opportunity to build up job security and stick around at the back of the bullpen even after Gregerson is activated.
Mar 22 2018Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said Wednesday that the team would break camp without naming a closer, leaving Leone's role in flux entering the season, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports. While the lack of clarity regarding the Cardinals' closer situation is frustrating for fantasy players, Leone and Luke Gregerson appear to be the top candidates to receive the team's initial save chances. Leone, who has already notched three saves this spring, seemingly possesses the skills to stick at the end of the bullpen, as he boasts a mid-90s fastball and leans heavily on a high-spin cutter the organization views as a plus pitch, according to Trezza. Gregerson, meanwhile, seems to have bounced back from a strained oblique that sidelined him earlier in the spring and would give the Cardinals a more experienced option at closer, if that's something Matheny prefers. Should neither Leone nor Gregerson come away with the role, Tyler Lyons and Bud Norris would likely be next in line to receive trials in the ninth inning.
Mar 12 2018Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said in an interview on KMOX Radio that Leone could open the season as the team's closer.Earlier in the spring, the club named Luke Gregerson as its closer for the 2018 campaign. However, Gregerson is expected to miss up to two weeks with an oblique injury, leaving the closer spot temporarily vacant. As a result, Leone will serve as the Cardinals' closer if Gregerson is unavailable when Opening Day arrives. Leone has appeared in five games (five innings) and converted all three of his save opportunities this spring, striking out six batters and allowing just one run in the process.
Mar 12 2018Leone recorded his third save of the Grapefruit League slate in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Nationals, working around a walk to deliver a scoreless ninth inning. While Luke Gregerson (oblique) has been on the shelf for most of the spring, Leone seems to have emerged as the top candidate to open the season as the Cardinals' closer in the event Gregerson remains unavailable. Though he lacks the experience that Gregerson and Bud Norris have in the ninth inning, Leone, who works in the mid-90s and has done a good job of limiting walks and home runs during his four seasons in the big leagues, compares favorably from a skills standpoint. If Leone continues his strong form the rest of the spring, it's not difficult to imagine him being named closer even if Gregerson makes a full recovery by Opening Day.
Mar 5 2018Leone is near the top of the list of the Cardinals' closer options, Jim Hayes of FOX Sports Midwest reports. In Bud Norris and Luke Gregerson, the Cardinals have brought in two relievers this offseason who have recorded double-digit save totals in recent seasons, though both fall short of the "proven closer" label. Leone, acquired from the Blue Jays in the Randal Grichuk trade in January, recorded a 29 percent strikeout rate and a 2.56 ERA for Toronto last season. The 26-year-old has the skills to potentially outpitch the veterans (as well as Tyler Lyons) and claim the closing role in what appears to be a very open competition.
Jan 19 2018Leone was traded to the Cardinals on Friday along with Conner Greene in exchange for Randal Grichuk. The 26-year-old righty posted a 2.56 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 81 strikeouts in 70.1 innings of relief in his breakout 2017 campaign. St. Louis has yet to acquire a legitimate closer this offseason, so Luke Gregerson and Tyler Lyons are the current favorites to get saves in 2018. Barring any further moves (the Cardinals have been a rumored landing spot for Alex Colome), Leone could enter that ninth-inning mix at some point in 2018 if Gregerson or Lyons struggles.
Jan 12 2018Leone agreed to a one-year, $1.085 million deal with Toronto on Friday, MLB.com's Gregor Chisholm reports.Leone posted a 2.56 ERA and 1.05 WHIP over 70.1 relief innings during his first season as a Blue Jay. The ringer-hander also held a solid 10.4 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9. Looking ahead, Leone will provide solid value in holds, and could challenge for some save opportunities if he's able to avoid regression.
Sep 11 2017Leone worked around a hit with two strikeouts in an inning of work to earn his first career save Monday against the Oiroles. With a one-run lead, Leone was called upon to close out a game for the first time since joining the club. He allowed a leadoff single but got the next three men he faced, including strikeouts of Chris Davis and Mark Trumbo to end the game. Leone appears to be firmly in the mix for saves while Roberto Osuna (personal) is away from the team for the birth of his child.
Aug 16 2017The Blue Jays reinstated Leone (personal) from the bereavement list Wednesday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.Leone should be available out of the bullpen right away after he was unavailable for the Blue Jays' last three games while tending to a personal matter. The 25-year-old has made quite the climb up the depth chart since his July 17 promotion, with his 1.35 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 13.1 innings during that span earning him increased involvement in the seventh and eighth innings. He's been able to notch holds in four of his last five appearances.
Aug 13 2017Leone (personal) was placed on the bereavement list Sunday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.Leone has temporarily left the Blue Jays to tend to a personal matter and is without a definitive timetable to rejoin the club, though his absence isn't expected to be an extended one. Toronto recalled Matt Dermody from Triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding move to offer another option out of the bullpen while Leone is away.
Aug 12 2017Leone notched his sixth hold of the season Saturday after allowing just one hit and striking out three Pirates over 1.2 innings. The right-hander sits just one hold shy of his career high set in 2014 as a Mariner. Leone's 2.55 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 55 strikeouts over 52.1 innings this year have been a highlight for the Jays' troubled bullpen. He's thrived since moving into a high-leverage role in August, and Leone is worth adding in league's that value holds.
Aug 7 2017Leone, who began 2017 with a relatively insignificant bullpen role, has taken over a high-leverage job since early July, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.Leone was picked up off waivers by the Jays in November after he posted a 4.07 ERA over his first three seasons with Seattle and Arizona. The right-hander has turned in a career-best 2.52 and 1.04 WHIP through 42 games this year. "Shoot, he's been good all year, he really has," manager John Gibbons said. "He's been a workhorse for us, too. He's been used in the middle innings, but he can really fill any role for you. He'll throw multiple innings. He's done a lot of good things." Leone has four holds over his last 10 appearances.
Jul 20 2017Leone (2-0) picked up the win Thursday against Boston after allowing no hits and one walk while striking out four over 2.1 innings. After starter Francisco Liriano managed just five outs, Leone answered the bell with his third-longest appearance of the season. The 25-year-old had been charged with two blown saves since being recalled earlier in the week, so Thursday's effort was a much-needed one for Leone. That said, his low-leverage role is unappealing for fantasy purposes.
Jul 17 2017Leone was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Monday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.Leone will join the bullpen in place of Lucas Harrell, who was designated for assignment in a corresponding move. The 25-year-old right-hander had previously made 34 appearances for the Blue Jays this season, mostly as a middle reliever. He carries a 2.95 ERA and 1.16 WHIP over 39.2 innings.
May 23 2017Leone has managed a 4.00 ERA and 1.33 WHIP over eight appearances (nine innings) this month.Although his May ERA is better than the mark he posted in the campaign's opening month, Leone hasn't been as effective of late. The right-hander has given up a run in five of his eight games while opposing hitters have upped their OBP by nearly 25 points since April. Leone will continue to see regular work, but his low-leverage role minimizes any potential fantasy relevance.
May 1 2017Leone appeared in 10 games, managing a 4.76 ERA and 1.32 WHIP during the season's opening month.Although the surface stats don't look all that impressive, Leone has been a success for Toronto in the early going. Outside of an April 28 implosion against Tampa Bay (three runs on four hits over 0.1 innings), the right-hander has been a pleasant surprise. Leone entered spring training as an underdog to make the Opening Day roster, but now he's one of the key cogs on an injury-depleted pitching staff. Relying heavily on his cutter, Leone posted a strong 13:4 K:BB through his first 11.1 innings of 2017.
Apr 9 2017Leone was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet reports.Leone will help give the Blue Jays some extra depth in the bullpen after J.P. Howell (shoulder) landed on the 10-day disabled list in a corresponding move. Howell had been assuming higher-leverage duty in relief, but Leone figures to be ticketed for mostly mop-up work until he gains the trust of manager John Gibbons.
Apr 8 2017Leone was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo on Saturday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet reports. It ends a short but productive stay in the majors for the right-hander, who was brought up to fill in for the injured Roberto Osuna (neck). Leone relieved Francisco Liriano in Friday's loss, holding the Rays to one run over 2.2 innings and recording three strikeouts. He'll have a chance to build on his strong performance in the minors, but could certainly be in line for another call-up later this season.
Apr 2 2017Leone was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports.Leone was optioned to minor-league camp Wednesday, but will return to the big league club after closer Roberto Osuna landed on the 10-day disabled list. He'll likely serve in low-leverage situations during his stint in the majors.
Feb 27 2017Leon allowed one hit, one run and walked one over one inning in his spring debut Sunday against the Phillies. The righty also managed to record all three of his outs via strikeout.Leon joined the Jays during the offseason, marking the 25-year-old's third change of uniform through his first four years in the league. The righty was impressive his rookie season in Seattle, achieving a 2.17 ERA with 70 strikeouts over 57 appearances (66.1 innings). Since then, Leon's struggled -- to say the least -- and has only tallied 44 MLB innings while seeing his career-ERA balloon to 4.07. Leon is still young and the Jays' are hopeful he'll develop into a strong middle-relief option in the years ahead.
Nov 18 2016Leone was claimed off waivers by the Blue Jays on Friday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.Leone struggled out of Arizona's bullpen, but his minor league numbers are much better, and given his track record of good strikeout rates, the Blue Jays decided to take a chance on the right-hander. He's only 25, so he could develop a bit more and could become a bigger part of the bullpen if he can show more control.
Sep 6 2016Leone was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Tuesday. He posted a 7.52 ERA and 2.26 WHIP in 20.1 innings out of the big league bullpen earlier this year, and should serve as a low-leverage relief arm over the final month of the season.
Jul 6 2016Leone was recalled from Triple-A on Wednesday.Leone has been a solid reliever at the Triple-A level, posting a 3.86 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, and 8.67 K/9 in 29 games. The 24-year-old will look improve in his second major league stint of the season after giving up four earned runs in three innings in his previous call up.
May 29 2016Leone was optioned to Triple-A Reno following Saturday night's game.Leone recorded one out in Friday night's game, but also surrendered an earned run on three hits in the blowout loss. He'll now head back to Triple-A after just a short time in the majors, but remains an option for bullpen depth, if needed, later in the season.
May 27 2016Leone was recalled by the D-backs on Friday. He'll add depth in the bullpen for Arizona after a flurry of moves Friday afternoon. Although he struggled in his two appearances for the D-backs earlier this season, the 24-year-old Leone could emerge to stick in a middle-relief role if he can replicate his success with Reno (2.12 ERA, 1.18 WHIP) with the big club.
Apr 28 2016Leone was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Wednesday.A corresponding roster move will be announced on Thursday, the team reports, and it figures to be another arm. Leone tossed just 1.2 innings for the Diamondbacks in one appearance since an April 25 call-up, giving up four hits and three earned runs. He figures to be an option for the bullpen down the road if a need arises.
Apr 25 2016Leone was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Monday, Nick Piecoro of AZcentral Sports reports.Leone appeared in six games for Triple-A Reno and posted a 3.86 ERA along with nine strikeouts in seven innings of work. The 24-year-old will provide bullpen depth for the Diamondbacks as long as he remains with the club.
Mar 7 2016Leone was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Monday, the Arizona Republic reports.Leone, who was acquired from Seattle last June along with Wellington Castillo, appeared in just three games for the Diamondbacks. He'll head down to the minors and provide Arizona with pitching depth this season.
Jul 27 2015Leone was optioned to Double-A Mobile on Monday, Jack Magruder of The Sports Xchange reports. The D-Backs called up Jarrod Saltalamacchia on Monday, so Leone will head back to Double-A to free up a spot on the 25-man roster. Leone appeared in two games after being called up on Tuesday (July 21). He allowed one hit and no earned runs in 1.2 innings Wednesday against Miami but gave up three earned runs on three hits Thursday against Milwaukee.
Jul 24 2015Leone gave up a three-run home run to Ryan Braun and struck out one in an inning of work Thursday against the Brewers. This blow-up followed Wednesday's game against the Marlins from which Leone was ejected for hitting Christian Yelich. The young righty hasn't performed very well in the majors this season, posting an ERA of 8.40 and 1.87 WHIP with nine strikeouts and nine walks in 15 innings over 13 appearances.
Jul 21 2015Leone was called up from Double-A Mobile on Tuesday, Nick Piecoro of AZCentral Sports reports.Leone will take the spot of Danny Dorn, who was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Tuesday. Leone has appeared in only one major league game for the Diamondbacks this season since being acquired in early-June. In that lone appearance, Leone allowed three earned runs on four hits in one inning.
Jun 7 2015Leone was optioned to Double-A Mobile on Sunday to make room for David Hernandez, who was activated from the disabled list.Leone made just one appearance for the D-Backs after being acquired from Seattle. Unfortunately, it was a rough one - he allowed three runs on four hits in just one inning, taking the loss against the Mets on Thursday. He will go back to the minors and try to improve his game after struggling at Triple-A and in the majors this year.
Jun 3 2015Leone was traded to the Diamondbacks on Wednesday in a six-player deal involving Mark Trumbo.Leone has made 10 appearances for the Mariners this season, but owns an 0-4 record and 6.35 ERA. Perhaps a change of scenery is just what the right-hander needed, as he'll be one of the four players sent to Arizona in one of the most noteworthy trades to date this season. If he stays in the big leagues, Leone will likely be delegated to middle relief.
May 29 2015Leone was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on Friday, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports.Leone will be up for his second stint with the major league club with James Paxton (finger) landing on the DL. However, the Mariners will need to create a spot on the roster next week for Paxton's replacement in the rotation -- who has not yet been named -- so Leone's stay may be short.
May 8 2015Leone was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Friday, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports.Leone didn't fair very well in his short time with the big league club, allowing a run in each of his last two appearances and five over 8.1 innings total. The 23-year-old will return to Triple-A and await another opportunity to rejoin the Mariners.
May 6 2015Leone gave up the game-winning home run Tuesday in the ninth inning at the Angels for his second consecutive walk-off loss.Leone also gave up a walk-off single against the Astros in his last appearance. The Mariners shook up their bullpen recently and Leone could be next if he doesn't return to form. He's given up runs in four of his eight appearances this season.
Apr 14 2015Leone took the loss Monday in extra innings after giving up one run, one hit and two walks in 2.1 innings at the Dodgers.Leone was called up earlier Monday and pressed into action because the bullpen was depleted after consecutive extra-inning games. After two perfect innings, Leone tired in his third inning Monday. He gave up a leadoff double in the 10th followed by two walks (one intentional) before he was pulled.
Apr 13 2015Leone was recalled to the major league team Monday, Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports.Leone began the season with Triple-A Tacoma in a surprising move, but he'll come up as the club sent Tom Wilhelmsen to the disabled list. The 23-year-old struggled in the spring, but posted a 2.17 ERA and 9.5 K/9 in 57 big league appearances. He figures to slot in as a middle relief option and may need a strong showing to stay with the big league team once Wilhelmsen returns.
Apr 3 2015Leone was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Friday, Shannon Drayer of 710 AM ESPN Seattle reports. This comes as somewhat of a surprise, because while Leone did struggle to a 12.86 ERA in nine Cactus League appearances, he was outstanding in a middle-relief role for Seattle last season (2.17 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 9.5 K/9 in 66.1 innings). It seems the team wants Leone, 23, to iron some things out and regain his confidence before entrusting him with any more big-league frames.
Aug 25 2014Leone earned his seventh relief win of the year Sunday against the Red Sox, stepping in and throwing 2.2 scoreless innings in relief of Hisashi Iwakuma.Leone wasn't perfect - he allowed three walks over that span, but he stopped the bleeding on a day when Iwakuma just didn't have it. Overall, the Mariners' bullpen allowed just one run over 6.1 innings.
Jul 19 2014Leone earned the win Saturday with one-plus inning of one-run ball in the Mariners' 12-inning victory at the Angels. After a scoreless 11th inning, Leone's night ended with the a lead-off homer in the 12th. It was a nice outing for Leone, who gave up two doubles in the 16th inning Friday to take the loss. Leone has impressed this season. He's been scored on only four times in his last 26 outings. His ERA this season is 2.20, but four of his 10 earned runs came in one outing in a third of an inning. Excluding that debacle, his ERA falls to 1.36.
Jun 19 2014Leone (2-1) got blown up in San Diego on Thursday, allowing four runs on three hits and a walk while recording just one out.Leone had been simply dominant prior to Thursday -- in fact, he'd given up just four earned runs all year long while posting a 33:11 K:BB in 30.1 innings. He was due some regression, but has been a legitimately good arm out of the pen, so this hold be considered just a bump in the road.
May 23 2014Leone struck out a pair while earning the win in relief with 1.2 scoreless innings against the Astros on Thursday. The hard-throwing right-hander has been a nice addition to the Mariners' bullpen this season, mixing as many as four pitches and averaging 94.3 mph on his fastball. While he's currently sitting with a 1.40 ERA, the impressive strikeout rate (10.7 K/9, 29.5% K%) is offset by a high walk rate (3.7 BB/9, 10.3%) and there's likely regression on the horizon as his ERA is nearly two runs below his 3.27 FIP and he's stranded 93.8% of baserunners thus far. Still, Leone is an impressive young arm for the Seattle relief corps, with some potential value as a staff filler in the appropriate formats.
Apr 4 2014Leone was called up by the Mariners on Friday, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports. With Hector Noesi designated for assignment, Leone will be up for his first major league opportunity. The right-hander advanced three rungs on the minor league ladder last season as a 21-year-old, finishing up with 16 appearances at Double-A Jackson. All in all, Leone posted a 2.25 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP and a 9.0 K/9 in 48 games. Look for Leone to work in low-leverage situations for the time being.
