Mar 24 2024The Red Sox released Cron on Sunday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran slugger exercised the opt-out in his minor-league deal Friday, and the Red Sox elected to release him rather than add him to the big-league roster. Cron was limited to 71 games last season due to back issues and had a .248/.295/.434 slash line with 12 home runs.
Mar 22 2024Cron opted out of his minor-league contract with the Red Sox on Friday, giving the organization two days to add him to the big-league roster or release him, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron played in just five big-league games after signing with Boston as a non-roster invitee March 1, and he went 2-for-11 with three walks. The veteran slugger's .729 OPS in 71 games between the Rockies and Angels last season was the first time his OPS was below .780 since 2017.
Mar 14 2024Cron started at designated hitter and went 1-for-2 with a walk in Thursday's spring game against the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron made his second start since signing a minor-league deal with the Red Sox and reiterated to Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe that he's beyond the back injury that limited him during 2023. He and Bobby Dalbec are competing as the right-handed complement to Triston Casas at first base. Recently, manager Alex Cora talked about Dalbec getting outfield starts, which potentially signals both players making the roster. Dalbec could become the righty-hitting depth option in the outfield to replace the injured Rob Refsnyder (toe).
Mar 12 2024Cron started at first base and went 0-for-2 in Monday's spring game against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron, who signed with Boston at the beginning of the month, made his Grapefruit League debut. He told CJ Haddad of MLB.com that it felt good to be out there, after the first baseman was limited to 71 games in 2023 due to a back injury. Cron is competing for a backup job at first base along with Bobby Dalbec. Of the two, Cron has a better track record of hitting MLB pitching.
Mar 4 2024Cron is tentatively scheduled to play his first game March 11, Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron was officially added to the spring training roster Sunday after signing with Boston on Friday. The Red Sox want a right-handed hitting complement to Triston Casas at first base, and Cron will begin his bid for the job next week. Bobby Dalbec is also part of the competition, but he has a minor-league option remaining which could influence the decision.
Mar 1 2024Cron signed a minor-league contract with the Red Sox on Friday that includes an invitation to spring training, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Red Sox had been looking for someone to compete with Bobby Dalbec for a role as a right-handed slugger off the bench, and Cron fits the bill. He slashed just .248/.295/.434 with 12 homers in 278 plate appearances last year while battling nagging back issues, so the 34-year-old is not a great bet to be healthy or effective. However, there's no risk in seeing what he might have left in the tank on a minor-league deal. Cron does not figure to be a major threat to Triston Casas' playing time at first base.
Sep 24 2023The Angels placed Cron on the 10-day injured list Sunday with lower back inflammation. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron's back injury has bothered him all season, and his most recent move to the injured list will keep him out for the rest of the year, as there is just eight days remaining in the regular season. He'll finish 2023 with 12 homers and 37 RBI alongside a .248/.295/.434 slash line through 278 plate appearances. Mike Moustakas (forearm) was reinstated from the injured list in a corresponding move.
Sep 16 2023Cron (back) was reinstated from the injured list Saturday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron last played Aug. 15 but has been activated to take the roster spot of Shohei Ohtani (oblique). With both Ohtani and Mike Trout (wrist) sidelined, Cron should have the chance to earn at-bats as the designated hitter.
Sep 13 2023Cron (back) took batting practice Monday and remains hopeful to return from the 10-day injured list before the end of the season, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Cron is now partaking in baseball activities for the first time since landing on the 10-day injured list Aug. 18 with low back inflammation, the Angels will likely proceed cautiously with the 33-year-old, who has dealt with recurring back problems all season. Prior to landing on the IL, Cron had been serving as the Halos' everyday first baseman, but with the team having faded from playoff contention, he's unlikely to reclaim a major role once activated. Instead, look for rookie Nolan Schanuel to continue serving as Anaheim's top option at first base the rest of the way.
Aug 28 2023Cron (back) is still experiencing soreness and hasn't yet resumed baseball activities, the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron is eligible to be activated after going on the 10-day IL on Aug. 18, but he doesn't appear to be particularly close to a return. The veteran first baseman was diagnosed with lower-back inflammation prior to hitting the injured list, and he had been struggling since joining the Angels at the end of July, slashing just .217/.280/.283 with one homer, five RBI and a 4:14 BB:K over 14 contests. The Angels have fallen 10.5 games out of an AL wild-card spot with the season winding down, so they probably won't rush Cron back and may continue to start rookie Nolan Schanuel (illness) at first base even if Cron is able to return.
Aug 18 2023The Angels placed Cron on the 10-day injured list Friday, retroactive to Aug. 16, with lower-back inflammation. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This back discomfort first popped up last weekend and Cron will now be sidelined until at least next Saturday. The 33-year-old first baseman has batted just .217/.280/.283 with one home run in 14 games (50 plate appearances) since being acquired from the Rockies ahead of the Aug. 1 trade deadline.
Aug 16 2023Cron is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron went 2-for-4 with two singles and a run scored Tuesday versus Texas after sitting out Sunday and Monday due to back tightness. Maybe it's still an issue. Mike Moustakas will start at first base and bat cleanup for the Angels on Wednesday.
Aug 15 2023Cron (back) is starting at first base and batting cleanup Tuesday against the Rangers, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron sat out the past two games due to back tightness but will rejoin the starting nine Tuesday at Texas. The 33-year-old has struggled to a .523 OPS in 13 games since being acquired from the Rockies ahead of the trade deadline.
Aug 14 2023Cron (back) is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Rangers, according to Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron will work as a reserve for the second time in as many days due to the sore back he is dealing with. He was able to pinch hit Sunday, so he might not be out of the lineup much longer.
Aug 13 2023Cron has been dealing with back tightness, which was a factor in his removal during the sixth inning of Saturday's game and his absence from Sunday's lineup, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Angels manager Phil Nevin indicated after Saturday's loss that he was bothered by how Cron looked while getting out of the way of a pitch, leading to the first baseman's early removal from the contest. Cron has just three hits while striking out 11 times over his past 22 at-bats, though it's not clear if the back issue has anything to do with those struggles. The veteran slugger should be considered day-to-day for the time being.
Aug 11 2023Cron went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's loss against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron's second-inning home run was his first since returning to the organization with whom he made his major-league debut in 2014. Cron has played in every game for the Angels since being traded from the Rockies on July 31. He holds a .222 batting average over 36 at-bats in 11 games since the trade.
Aug 6 2023Cron is out of the lineup for Sunday's game versus the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron started all six games at first base since being acquired by the Halos last weekend, and he'll receive a day off after going 5-for-23 with three walks, three RBI and four runs during that span. Mike Moustakas will move over to first base while Eduardo Escobar receives a start at the hot corner.
Jul 30 2023Cron and Randal Grichuk were traded from the Rockies to the Angels on Sunday in exchange for Jake Madden and Mason Albright, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron spent his first four major-league seasons with the Angels, and he'll return to the organization as the team attempts to bolster its roster for a second-half playoff push. The 33-year-old has missed some time due to injuries this year but has slashed .259/.300/.473 with 11 home runs, 32 RBI and 31 runs over 55 games. Cron should have an opportunity to carve out an everyday role with the Angels as long as he remains healthy down the stretch.
Jul 28 2023Cron (back) is serving as the Rockies' designated hitter and batting fifth Friday against the Athletics, Kelsey Wingert-Linch of AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron wound up missing a full week due to lower-back tightness, but he's ready to rock for Colorado's three-game weekend series versus Oakland. The 33-year-old slugger has slashed .255/.299/.480 with 11 homers and 31 RBI in 53 games this season.
Jul 25 2023Cron (back) said he doesn't expect to return to the lineup until Friday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron will miss a fourth straight game Tuesday at Washington due to lower-back tightness and probably won't play in Wednesday's series finale either. Colorado has a scheduled team off day Thursday before opening a three-game weekend set Friday against the Athletics. Michael Toglia has been filling in at first base.
Jul 24 2023Rockies manager Bud Black said Monday that Cron (back) is "getting closer" to a return to the lineup, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron is missing a third straight start Monday because of lower-back tightness, but he was able to take some swings in the batting cage, run some light sprints and play catch pregame. The first baseman is widely expected to be on the trade block this week, so the Rockies no doubt want to see him back and healthy as he auditions for contenders.
Jul 23 2023Cron (back) is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 33-year-old was scratched from Saturday's lineup due to low-back stiffness and will be sidelined for a second straight game. Michael Toglia will receive another start at first base Sunday in Cron's absence.
Jul 22 2023Cron's absence from the lineup Saturday against Miami is due to back stiffness, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron's late scratch looked potentially like a development which foreshadowed a trade, as the veteran is in the final year of his contract and could make for a fairly interesting rental. It remains entirely possible that he'll spend the last two months of the season elsewhere, but a move doesn't seem imminent following the news that he's dealing with a minor injury. Michael Toglia will handle first base Saturday.
Jul 21 2023Cron went 2-for-5 with a homer in the Rockies' defeat of the Marlins on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron opened the game's scoring with a two-run shot to left-center off Marlins left-hander Braxton Garrett in the top of the first inning and then later added a single off right-hander Dylan Floro in the top of the eighth. The 33-year-old slugger has appeared in only 53 games this season due to injuries, but he's generally been a reliable source of power when healthy, now with 11 home runs and 31 RBI in limited action.
Jul 19 2023Cron went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Wednesday against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron accounted for the Rockies' lone run of the game with his 10th homer of the season. He started five of the team's six games during the homestand and went deep three times to go along with six RBI and six runs scored. Cron's overall line has been limited due to a lengthy absence caused by a back injury, though he now boasts a .215 ISO across 202 plate appearances -- in line with his career norm.
Jul 16 2023Cron went 1-for-5 with a grand slam and an additional run scored in Sunday's 8-7 extra-innings win over the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron put the Rockies ahead 5-3 with his eighth-inning blast, his second in as many games. The first baseman is batting a solid .314 (11-for-35) in July, lifting his season slash line to .250/.293/.451 through 50 contests. He's added nine homers, 28 RBI, 28 runs scored and 10 doubles over 198 plate appearances.
Jul 15 2023Cron went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 6-3 loss to the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron has four multi-hit efforts over nine games in July, but he's also gone hitless three times this month. The first baseman has added two of his eight homers this season in that stretch. He's at a decent .251/.295/.441 slash line with 24 RBI, 26 runs scored and 10 doubles through 49 contests overall.
Jul 5 2023Cron went 2-for-4 with a solo home run Wednesday against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron has hit well since returning from the injured list June 27, collecting nine hits across 25 at-bats. However, prior to going yard for his seventh homer of the season Wednesday, he had only one extra-base hit since being activated. While Cron's overall numbers have declined from recent seasons, he's striking out at only a 21.3 percent clip and also has a 15.6 percent barrel rate -- both of which suggest he could be in line for better results in the second half.
Jul 2 2023Cron is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Tigers, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron recently returned from a six-week absence due to back spasms and will sit Sunday after making five straight starts. The 33-year-old has gone 6-for-17 with a double, a walk, an RBI and four runs since he returned from the injured list. Elehuris Montero will man first base in the series finale versus Detroit.
Jun 28 2023Cron went 0-for-3 on Tuesday against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron returned from a six-week absence caused by back spasms. He served as the designated hitter and hit fifth while Elehuris Montero stuck in the lineup at first base. Lefty Clayton Kershaw was on the mound, pushing Nolan Jones to the bench, though he is likely to swap places with Montero when facing righties.
Jun 26 2023The Rockies reinstated Cron (back) from the 10-day injured list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Back spasms sent Cron to the injured list May 15, and he now returns to the active roster after two rehab games in rookie ball. Cron was slashing .228/.277/.426 prior to getting hurt, and he'll presumably return to his everyday role at first base. Michael Toglia was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move.
Jun 8 2023Cron (back) said Thursday that he's still experiencing pain in his lower back, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron also acknowledged that there is no timetable for his return to Colorado's active roster. He's been on the injured list since mid-May due to lingering back issues and hasn't responded well to a period of rest and treatment. Nolan Jones is getting a lot of run at first base for the Rockies in Cron's absence, with Mike Moustakas also mixing in.
Jun 6 2023Rockies manager Bud Black said Tuesday that Cron (back) is at least a week away from beginning baseball activities, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron has been on the shelf since mid-May due to lingering discomfort in his lower back and there remains no timetable for his return to the active roster. Nolan Jones and Elehuris Montero are currently drawing the majority of starts at first base for Colorado, with a few Mike Moustakas sightings sprinkled into the mix.
May 22 2023Cron (back) has yet to resume baseball activities, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron has already missed a week of action with lower-back spasms but remains limited to just receiving treatment to this point. He'll be eligible for activation from the injured list later this week, but it sounds like it could be a while longer than that. Mike Moustakas and Michael Toglia have been handling first base in Cron's absence.
May 15 2023The Rockies placed Cron (back) on the 10-day injured list Monday, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron departed Sunday's 4-0 win over the Phillies with back spasms and is now set to miss at least a week and a half of action. Mike Moustakas is starting at first base Monday against the Reds in Cron's stead, and Triple-A Albuquerque call-up Michael Toglia could also see time at the position while Cron is on the mend.
May 14 2023Rockies manager Bud Black told reporters after Friday's game that Cron (back) is likely heading to the injured list, Kyle Newman of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron left Sunday's game against the Phillies with back spasms, and it sounds like the infielder will need at least a week-plus to recover. In 35 games thus far, Cron has hit .231/.281/.433 with six homers and 19 RBI with no stolen bases. Mike Moustakas as well as Harold Castro could see reps at first with Cron out of the lineup. The Rockies likely won't make the move official for Cron until before Monday's game against Cincinnati.
May 13 2023Cron went 1-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI on Saturday against the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron drove in his 19th run of the season with a double in the third inning and later came around to score. He now has at least one hit in 10 of his last 13 games, also tallying nine RBI and eight runs scored in that span. Despite the strong stretch, Cron has maintained an underwhelming .231/.281/.433 line -- good for a 76 wRC+ -- across 146 plate appearances on the campaign.
May 8 2023Cron is out of the lineup Monday versus the Pirates, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron will head to the bench Monday as the Rockies start a three-game series in Pittsburgh. The 33-year-old has gone 4-for-20 with two doubles, two runs scored and six walks while striking out four times over six games in the month of May. Mike Moustakas will replace him at first base and bat sixth in the series opener with the Pirates.
Apr 30 2023Cron went 3-for-5 with a three-run home run and a double to go along with an additional RBI and run scored in Sunday's victory over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron had Ryne Nelson's number Sunday, tagging him for a double in the second inning before swatting a three-run homer in the third that plated Charlie Blackmon and Jurickson Profar. Cron's breakout performance was much needed considering the 33-year-old was 2-for-20 (.100) in his last five games. Though Cron is striking out at a 27.6 percent clip overall and holds just a .188 average against right-handed pitching this season, Cron has been significantly better versus lefties with a .300/.323/.467 slash line.
Apr 1 2023Cron went 2-for-4 with a double and a two-run home run in Saturday's loss to the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron continues his hot weekend as he clobbered a two-run homer off Michael Wacha to bring the Rockies within a run at 5-4 in the sixth. That's already Cron's third homer of the season, and he's driven in seven runs over the first three games. It's a great start for Cron that's nice to see after his struggles to end the 2022 campaign.
Mar 30 2023Cron went 4-for-5 with two home runs, a double and five total RBI in Thursday's 7-2 win against San Diego. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron was arguably the offensive standout of Opening Day, as he was the only player in the league to go deep twice. The veteran first baseman put the Rockies on the board with a first-inning single, gave the team a 4-2 lead with a fifth-inning three-run homer and went deep again with a solo shot in the seventh. Cron has hit 25-plut homers in each of his last four full seasons (excluding the shortened 2020 campaign), and he appears well on his way to putting up big power numbers again in 2023.
Mar 26 2023Cron (back) will start at first base and bat cleanup in Sunday's split-squad Cactus League game against the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron will check back into Colorado's spring lineup for the first time since March 14 after a bout with back spasms prompted the club to exercise caution with him over the past two weeks. The veteran first baseman apparently checked out fine after hitting high-velocity pitching Saturday, so the back issue shouldn't be anything that hinders him at the plate moving forward.
Mar 25 2023Cron will hit against a high velocity pitching machine before Saturday's Cactus League game, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's another step in the right direction for Cron, who has missed most of the spring while dealing with back spasms. The slugger also went through workouts Friday before the contest, and he appears to be on the right track towards getting on the field for the Rockies before Opening Day. A trip to the injured list to begin the season cannot be ruled out yet, however.
Mar 17 2023Cron hasn't played since Tuesday and will be out at least a few more days due to back spasms, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It appears to be a day-to-day situation at this point, although the Rockies aren't providing a timetable for Cron's return. Mike Moustakas and Harold Castro have handled first base the last two days and Michael Toglia would also be a candidate to see
Mar 16 2023Cron has gone 5-for-29 with one home run, two doubles and nine strikeouts during Cactus League action. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron is locked into the first base job in Colorado and has established a fairly clear baseline of performance for the last several seasons. That makes it difficult to be overly concerned by his lack of production this spring, particularly so long as he maintains his health.
Oct 5 2022Cron is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Michael Toglia will pick up the start at first base while Cron rests for the season finale. Cron will finish the campaign with a career-high 102 RBI and 79 runs to go with 29 home runs and a .257 average.
Sep 25 2022Cron (hand) will start at first base and bat cleanup in Sunday's game against the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron will return to the starting nine for the series finale after he was on the bench for each of the Rockies' previous three games due to the left hand injury. The first-time All-Star has noticed a major drop in production in the second half -- he's hitting .214 with eight home runs, 32 RBI and 22 runs in 52 games -- but he should finish the campaign as a near-everyday player now that the hand injury looks to be behind him.
Sep 24 2022Cron (hand) isn't starting Saturday against the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron continues to deal with a bruised left hand and will be out of the lineup for a third consecutive game. Michael Toglia will take his place at first base and bat fifth.
Sep 23 2022Cron (hand) is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Padres, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron exited Wednesday's game after being hit by a pitch on his left hand, and he'll sit for a second straight game Friday due to the bruise. The 32-year-old should be considered day-to-day while Michael Toglia receives another start at first base.
Sep 22 2022Cron (hand) isn't starting Thursday against the Giants, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron exited Wednesday's matchup against San Francisco after being hit by a pitch, and he's been diagnosed with a left hand contusion. It doesn't appear to be a serious concern as X-rays came back negative, but Michael Toglia will start at first base and bat fifth Thursday.
Sep 21 2022Cron left Wednesday's game against the Giants early after being hit by a pitch, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron was replaced by Elehuris Montero after getting hit in the hand by a pitch in the fourth inning. The Rockies are officially calling it a left hand contusion after x-rays came back negative. More updates will come as his status becomes clearer, but for now he should be considered day-to-day.
Sep 20 2022Cron went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, a double and two additional RBI in a 6-3 loss to San Francisco on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron was responsible for all three of Colorado's runs with a solo home run in the sixth inning and two-run double in the eighth following a first inning single. The long ball is the 32-year-old's 29th of the campaign, which puts him one shy of his career-high of 30 set back in 2018 with Tampa Bay. He's in the midst of a 6-for-10 stretch on the heels of going 2-for-18 over his prior five contests.
Sep 10 2022Cron went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run and a walk in Saturday's 4-1 win over Arizona. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron's sixth-inning homer didn't travel quite as far as the 504-foot blast he crushed Friday, but the 457-foot shot was plenty deep to bring home three runs and provide the margin of victory for Colorado in the contest. The slugger went deep only twice in 25 games in August, but he's already hit four homers through nine contests in September. Cron is tied for seventh in the National League with 28 homers on the campaign.
Sep 5 2022Cron went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored Monday against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron took Taylor Rogers yard in the eighth inning to tally his second homer in as many days. He has now gone deep 26 times for the season, including on three occasions in his last 13 starts. For the season, Cron has maintained a .346 wOBA and 109 wRC+ across 546 plate appearances.
Sep 4 2022Cron went 1-for-7 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored across both games of Sunday's doubleheader against the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron delivered his 25th home run of the season, taking Art Warren yard in the ninth inning during the first game of Colorado's doubleheader. It marked only his fourth home run since the All-Star break, and he's hit only .205 with 19 RBI and 14 runs scored across 37 games in that span. Despite the slow stretch, Cron has still maintained a .345 wOBA and 108 wRC+ across 540 plate appearances for the season.
Aug 30 2022Cron went 1-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored in Tuesday's win over Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron was a big part of Colorado's victory against Atlanta, as he accounted for all three runs his team scored. The first baseman has cooled off significantly as the multi-RBI effort was just his second in the last 14 games. In that stretch, he is batting just .208 and has knocked in only six RBI.
Aug 28 2022Cron went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles in Saturday's 3-0 loss to the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron has now produced five hits across the first two games of the series at Citi Field, raising his season average to .272. He'll remain in the lineup Sunday, manning first base while batting cleanup.
Aug 24 2022Cron went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in a 7-6 victory over the Rangers on Tuesday, ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron mashed his 24th home run with a game-winning three-run shot in the seventh off Brock Burke. Cron picked up his 83rd RBI with the home run and is slugging .499 over 455 at-bats this season. It was his second home run in August.
Aug 21 2022Cron is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rockies haven't revealed that Cron is dealing with an injury, but he'll find himself out of the lineup for a second straight game in any case. Rookie Elehuris Montero will pick up the start at first base in place of the 32-year-old Cron, who could see his opportunities tail off a bit down the stretch while the 53-69 Rockies are in evaluation mode.
Aug 20 2022Cron is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron hasn't been getting many hits to fall lately (2-for-his-last-25), and his power has been almost non-existent since the All-Star break. Cron admitted last month that his left wrist was still bothersome, though there has been nothing yet to suggest this absence is injury related.
Aug 17 2022Cron went 1-for-4 Wednesday against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron has struggled at the plate since the All-Star break, as he is hitting just .181/.245/.319 across 23 games. He has seven extra-base hits -- two of which are home runs -- in that span, to go along with nine runs scored and 11 RBI. Cron still owns a .352 wOBA and 113 wRC+ for the season, but he's fallen off his first-half pace.
Aug 11 2022Cron isn't in the lineup Thursday against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron is riding a five-game hitting streak in which he's slashed .318/.375/.682 with a home run, a triple, three doubles, eight RBI and four runs. He'll get a breather while Elehuris Montero starts at first base and bats sixth.

The first baseman has recorded five multi-hit efforts through nine games in August, going 12-for-40 (.300) with a homer and five doubles in that span. He's up to a .280/.330/.514 slash line with 23 long balls, 79 RBI, 62 runs scored and 26 doubles through 108 contests.
Jul 31 2022Cron is not in the lineup for Sunday's game versus the Dodgers, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. Connor Joe will shift to first base while Sam Hilliard enters the lineup and plays the outfield.
Jul 15 2022Cron went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk and two total run scored in Friday's 13-2 win over the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron has been hampered by a wrist injury over the last week, but he was able to make an impact Friday. His solo shot in the seventh inning sparked a four-run rally to pad the Rockies' lead, and it was his 21st long ball of the season. Since June 25, he's batting .311 (19-for-61) with four homers, 17 RBI and nine runs scored. The first baseman has maintained a stellar .296/.349/.553 slash line with 69 RBI, 54 runs scored and 20 doubles through 88 contests overall.

Connor Joe is shifting to first base while Garrett Hampson draws the start in center field.
Jul 12 2022Cron's left wrist injury affected him while swinging Monday against the Padres, resulting in him being absent from the lineup for Tuesday's game, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The slugger returned to action Monday after missing two games after he was hit by a pitch on his left wrist, and he went 0-for-4 with a sacrifice fly and three strikeouts in his return. Cron should be considered day-to-day for now, and the Rockies are likely to be cautious with their first baseman to avoid aggravating the injury, especially with the All-Star break on the horizon.
Jul 11 2022Cron (wrist) went 0-for-4 with a sacrifice fly and three strikeouts in Monday's 6-5 loss to the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron missed two games after he was hit by a pitch on his left wrist in Friday's contest. His timing was a little off in his return, but there's little reason for fantasy managers to be concerned about the first baseman. He's maintained a reasonable 26 percent strikeout rate while slashing .292/.345/.544 with 20 home runs, 67 RBI, 49 runs scored and 19 doubles in 85 contests. Cron has hit safely in 12 of his last 14 games, going 15-for-52 (.288) in that span.
Jul 10 2022Cron (wrist) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game in Arizona, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. Connor Joe is shifting to first base while Yonathan Daza enters the lineup in center field.
Jul 8 2022Cron was removed from Friday's game against the Diamondbacks in the top of the fifth inning due to a left wrist contusion. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI to begin Friday's game but was hit by a pitch in the top of the fifth inning and removed from the game. He underwent X-rays that came back negative, so he should tentatively be considered day-to-day. If Cron misses additional time, Connor Joe and Elehuris Montero are candidates for increased looks at first base.
Jul 4 2022Cron went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Monday's 5-3 loss to the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron waited until the ninth inning to extend his hitting streak to nine games, and he did so with his 20th homer of the year. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron crossed the plate twice, thanks to an Elias Diaz single in the second inning and a Randal Grichuk homer in the fifth. Cron knocked in Yonathan Daza in the fifth inning for an RBI of his own. The three-hit outing gave the first baseman at least one hit in 10 of his last 11 games, four of which were multi-hit games. He will get to enjoy some more home cooking against the Nationals early this coming week before the Rockies head out on the road.
Apr 24 2022Cron went 1-for-4 with an RBI in Sunday's win over Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron went hitless in the team's doubleheader Saturday, though he picked up his 17th RBI of the season on an infield single in the first inning one day later. He has hit nearly exclusively out of the cleanup role this season, and given his .283/.313/.667 line across 64 plate appearances this season there's no reason to expect that to change.

Oct 5 2021Cron agreed to an extension with the Rockies on Tuesday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron will receive $14.5 million over the next two years, per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. He wasn't merely a product of his environment last season, however, as his .281/.375/.530 slash line was good for a 127 wRC+, a full-season career best.

Joshua Fuentes will work at first base in his place while Connor Joe serves as the designated hitter.
Jul 20 2021Cron went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run Tuesday against the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron took Paul Sewald yard in the eighth inning to record his 14th homer of the season. Jul 17 2021Cron went 1-for-3 with a grand slam and a walk in Friday's 10-4 loss to the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron homered with the bases loaded in the third inning off Julio Urias. He drove in all four of Colorado's runs in the game. The first baseman has homered in back-to-back games dating back to before the All-Star break. His 13 long balls are second-highest on the team behind Ryan McMahon's 16. Cron has managed to double his career walk rate this season to 12.1 percent while maintaining his career average strikeout rate. That, and batting at Coors Field has helped him to a career-high .846 OPS through 279 plate appearances this season.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron knotted the score at 1-1 with his fourth-inning solo blast off Chris Paddack and doubled in the sixth and eighth for his third three-hit game of the season. The first baseman was in a mini 0-for-8 slump prior to the consecutive extra-base hits and enters the break slashing .254/.364/.470 with 12 home runs and 35 runs and RBI apiece in 75 games.
Jul 9 2021Cron (head) is batting sixth and playing first base Friday against the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The first baseman cleared the concussion protocol Thursday after taking a pitch to the head, and is back in action to open the series in San Diego. Cron has hit just .221 off right-handed pitching this season, but Friday's opponent Reiss Knehr will be making his MLB debut.
Jul 8 2021Cron is doing okay after being hit in the head by a pitch Thursday, and he cleared concussion protocol, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron exited the game in the seventh inning, though manager Bud Black stated it was as a precaution. It appears he could be able to return to the lineup Friday against San Diego as a result. If not, Joshua Fuentes figures to see an uptick in playing time.
Jul 4 2021Cron is out of the lineup Sunday against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron started the past four games and will take a seat after going 3-for-11 with a homer, a double, three RBI, two runs and three walks during that stretch. Joshua Fuentes will start at first base in the series finale.
Jun 30 2021Cron went 1-for-3 with a solo homer and sacrifice fly during Wednesday's 6-2 win over the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron took Chad Kuhl deep to cut the Pirates' lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth and later added another RBI on a sac fly in the fifth. The performance breaks a 15 at-bat hitless streak and brings Cron to 11 homers and 31 RBI on the campaign.
Jun 29 2021Cron is not in the starting lineup Tuesday against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron will yield the first base duties to Joshua Fuentes after going hitless across his past 15 at-bats. Cron still holds respectable numbers on the campaign, slashing .251/.350/.453 with 10 homers and 29 RBI.
Jun 22 2021Cron went 1-for-3 with a home run and a walk in Tuesday's loss against the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron's solo shot in the seventh inning off Chris Flexen was all the offense the Rockies could muster in this game, but the slugging first baseman has been excellent at the plate of late. He has homered in back-to-back games for the second time this month and has gone yard in five of his last eight contests while hitting safely in all but one of those contests. He's hitting .266 this month across 60 at-bats.
Jun 20 2021Cron went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer in Sunday's 7-6 loss to Milwaukee. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron's two-run blast in the sixth inning was his ninth of the season and pulled the Rockies within a run of the Brewers. The 31-year-old slugger is heating up with the weather, going 10-for-24 (.417) with four homers and 10 RBI over his last seven games. He's sporting a .271/.371/.475 slash line with 28 RBI through 210 plate appearances.
Jun 19 2021Cron isn't starting Saturday's game against the Brewers, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Joshua Fuentes will take over at first base and bat seventh.
Jun 17 2021Cron went 2-for-4 with a grand slam and a double in Thursday's 7-3 win over Milwaukee. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The first baseman went deep off Milwaukee starter Brandon Woodruff in the first inning. Cron's beginning to rediscover his power stroke -- he's hit three homers in his last four games, all of which have been at hitter-friendly Coors Field. For the year, the 31-year-old has a .256/.360/.453 slash line with eight long balls, 25 RBI, 27 runs scored and eight doubles across 200 plate appearances.
Jun 16 2021Cron went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 8-7 win over San Diego. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron went deep off San Diego starter Blake Snell in the first inning. The long ball was the first baseman's second in the last three games after going 24 straight games without a homer. For the year, Cron is slashing .250/.357/.429 with seven homers, 21 RBI and 26 runs scored across 196 plate appearances. He continues to log regular playing time at first base over Joshua Fuentes.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron has gone 1-for-16 with a double, a walk and seven strikeouts in his last five appearances, and he'll be out of the lineup Thursday for the second time in the last three games. Joshua Fuentes will shift to first base and bat seventh.
Jun 8 2021Cron is not in the starting lineup Tuesday against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron started each of the three games during the weekend series against Oakland, but he recorded just one hit in 11 at-bats. He'll take a seat at least for the beginning portion of Tuesday's series opener as Matt Adams plays first base and bats sixth.
Jun 3 2021Cron is not in Thursday's lineup against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The righty-hitting first baseman is hitting .148 with 10 strikeouts, five walks and zero home runs over his last 10 games, but he is still slashing .275/.383/.450 on the season. Matt Adams draws the start at first base and will bat fifth.
May 30 2021Cron is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Colorado will turn to Matt Adams to start at first base, with Cron taking at least the first portion of the tilt off. Cron figures to be an option off the bench during the series finale.
May 27 2021Cron is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron started seven straight games after returning from a lower-back strain, hitting a modest .250/.333/.333 over that stretch. He'll get a rest following three straight hitless games, with Josh Fuentes shifting over to first base.
May 26 2021Cron isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron had gone 0-for-9 with two walks and four strikeouts across the last three games. Josh Fuentes will shift to first base while Brendan Rodgers starts at the keystone.
May 21 2021Cron went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in Friday's 7-1 win over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron had two singles that each drove in a run in Friday's game. The 31-year-old is amongst the hitting leaders for Colorado, slashing .308/.400/.500 with five home runs, 17 RBI and 19 runs in 120 plate appearances. He has never batted higher than .278 over a full season in his career.
May 19 2021Cron went 3-for-4 with a double and a run in Tuesday's loss to San Diego. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron returned to the lineup after a 12-day absence caused by a back injury. He picked up where he left off prior to his trip to the injured list, notching his fourth multi-hit game over his past seven contests. After a slow start to the campaign, Cron has pushed his slash line up to a standout .309/.407/.515 on the season. He has five home runs and 15 RBI along with 18 runs scored.
May 18 2021Cron (back) was activated off the 10-day injured list as expected Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron's lower-back strain will wind up costing him only slightly more than the minimum 10 days. He was in excellent form at the time of the injury, hitting .388/.474/.714 over his last 15 games. The 31-year-old will start at first base and bat cleanup in his return to the lineup Tuesday at San Diego. Antonio Santos was optioned in a corresponding move.
May 17 2021Cron (back) will likely be activated from the 10-day injured list ahead of Tuesday's game against San Diego, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron is on track to return to action following a brief stint on the injured list due to a lower-back strain. He was off to a strong start at the dish prior to the injury, hitting .290 with five homers and 15 RBI in his first 29 games. Connor Joe figures to return to a bench role following Cron's activation.
May 10 2021Cron was placed on the 10-day injured list with a lower-back strain Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's a poorly-timed injury for Cron, as he was just starting to heat up at the plate, posting a 1.188 OPS over his last 15 games after struggling to a .558 OPS over his first 14. The move was backdated to Friday, so he'll be eligible to return as soon as next Monday, though it's not yet clear whether or not he's expected to do so. Matt Adams and Connor Joe have started the last four games at first base and will likely continue to split time there until Cron returns.
May 9 2021Cron (back) is unavailable Sunday against the Cardinals and will be reevaluated Monday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 31-year-old will sit for the third straight contest as he continues to battle a lower-back issue. Connor Joe and Matt Adams have both received a start at first base during Cron's absence.
May 8 2021Cron (back) isn't starting Saturday against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron was a late scratch Friday due to low back tightness, and he'll be out of the lineup for a second straight game. Connor Joe will start at first base and bat sixth.
May 7 2021Cron was scratched from Friday's lineup against the Cardinals due to low back tightness, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron was replaced in the lineup by Matt Adams, who is playing first base and batting sixth. It's not yet clear whether Cron will be available off the bench or whether he could return to action Saturday.
May 5 2021Cron isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron will get a breather after he went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI, a walk and a strikeout in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader. Matt Adams will start at first base and bat sixth.
May 4 2021Cron went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk during Tuesday's win over the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron cranked a pivotal two-run, game-tying homer against Alex Wood during the second half of Tuesday's doubleheader. The 31-year-old also tacked on a two-out single in the seventh inning, positioning Charlie Blackmon for a walk-off home run. Cron now has five home runs on the season while batting .290/.389/.495.
May 2 2021Cron is not in the lineup Sunday against the Diamondbacks, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 31-year-old will take a seat for the first time since April 11, as he's posted a 1.018 OPS with four homers, 12 RBI and 11 runs over the past 16 games. Matt Adams will receive the start at first base for the Rockies in Cron's absence.
Apr 28 2021Cron went 2-for-3 with two walks, a solo home run and two runs scored Tuesday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron provided some insurance in the 10th inning by blasting his fourth home run of the season, which put the Rockies up by three runs. After connecting for only three extra-base hits in his first 14 games, Cron has hit all four of his home runs with an additional double in his last seven contests. Through 81 plate appearances, Cron is now hitting .271/.370/.500.
Apr 26 2021Cron went 4-for-5 with a two-run homer and also scored twice in Sunday's 12-2 win over the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron had three singles in Sunday's blowout win before showcasing some late power when he launched a two-run blast to left-center in the eighth to put the Rockies up 12-2. The 31-year-old had a really slow start to the season but has started to find his swing as he's slashing .371/.421/.686 with three home runs, 10 RBI and six runs scored over his last 10 games.
Apr 23 2021Cron went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Friday's 5-4 win over the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Two games after smacking his first home run of the campaign, Cron went deep again Friday, tying the game with a two-run shot off Vince Velasquez in the fourth inning. He now has nine RBI on the season and is slashing .200/.313/.382 across 64 plate appearances.
Apr 21 2021Cron went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and five RBI in Tuesday's 6-2 win over the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron was responsible for almost all of the Rockies' runs in the contest, driving in a pair with a double in the sixth inning before blasting a three-run shot in the eighth. The home run was the first of the regular season for the slugger after he went deep five times during spring straining. Cron boosted his average to .208 with the two-hit performance.
Apr 11 2021Cron is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Josh Fuentes will take over at first base while Cron sits for the second time in less than a week. Following a productive spring training, Cron has struggled to get going at the plate, despite making six of his eight starts at Coors Field. Cron has recorded four hits -- two doubles and two singles -- while striking out 11 times in 27 at-bats.
Apr 8 2021Cron isn't starting Thursday's game against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron started each of his first six games with Colorado and went 4-for-21 with two doubles, five runs, one RBI and seven strikeouts. Josh Fuentes will take over at first base for Thursday's series finale against Arizona, batting sixth.
Apr 2 2021Cron went 2-for-4 with two runs and a double in Thursday's 8-5 win over the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The first baseman was an offensive catalyst for Colorado, hitting a leadoff single in his team's go-ahead, two-run sixth inning. Cron struggled considerably in 2020 with Detroit, but perhaps the change of scenery will restore his offensive value. Hitting fifth in the order behind Trevor Story and Charlie Blackmon should position Cron for success in 2021, and playing half his games at Coors Field gives him a chance to surpass his career-high 30 homers in 2018 with the Rays.
Mar 26 2021Cron went 3-for-3 with a. solo home run, one double and two runs in Thursday's spring win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron smacked a double in the fourth inning and was brought in to score later in the inning, and he tied the game with a solo home run in the sixth. The 31-year-old has had a strong spring performance and has posted a 1.180 OPS with four home runs, 10 runs and seven RBI across 16 Cactus League games. Cron's contract was selected by the Rockies on Saturday, and he'll serve as the team's primary first baseman this year while playing his home games at hitter-friendly Coors Field.
Mar 20 2021Cron's contract was selected by the Rockies on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron joined the Rockies on merely a minor-league deal this winter, but he always seemed likely to win the starting job at first base given the team's uninspiring alternatives. He needed to prove his health following August knee surgery, and he's done that this spring, hitting .324/.343/.618 through 12 games. Cron has averaged 27.4 homers per 600 plate appearances thus far in his career and could certainly surpass that mark this season with an everyday role in the league's most hitter-friendly park.
Mar 15 2021Cron went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's spring loss to the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a slow start to spring training, Cron has gotten into a rhythm at the plate over the last few games as he continues to compete for a starting job at first base. Across his past four games, Cron has gone 6-for-12 with two home runs, two doubles, four runs, three RBI and two strikeouts. The 31-year-old remains the favorite to serve as the primary first baseman for the Rockies to begin the season, even though Josh Fuentes has also had a strong spring.
Mar 9 2021Cron went 3-for-3 with a solo home run, two doubles and two runs in Tuesday's spring win over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron got off to a slow start this spring by going just 1-for-13 with one single and six strikeouts across five games, but he had his way against Arizona with three extra-base hits in Tuesday's blowout win. Although the 31-year-old is in camp as a non-roster invitee, he has a good chance to carve out regular at-bats during the regular season. Although Josh Fuentes has also impressed at the plate and on defense while competing for the job at first base, Fuentes has more defensive versatility, which could lead to more playing time for Cron.
Feb 15 2021Cron signed with Colorado as a non-roster invitee Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There may be no better way for a fringy player to suddenly become fantasy-relevant than by taking up residence at Coors Field. Cron will have to prove his health in camp, as knee surgery limited him to just 13 games last season. If he does that, he has a good chance to carve out a significant role, with Josh Fuentes and Greg Bird currently lined up as his top competition at first base. Cron has looked like at least a low-end regular throughout most of his seven big-league seasons, hitting .257/.312/.464 (110 wRC+) overall.
Jan 11 2021Cron (knee) was cleared for full activity Monday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron appeared in just 13 games last season before being shut down for knee surgery. He still has some work to do to get back in game shape, but getting cleared for full activity in mid-January is certainly a positive sign. He's been a competent, if unexciting, first baseman throughout his seven-year big-league career, hitting .257/.312/.464, but teams may wait to see how his knee is doing before offering him a contract.
Aug 19 2020Cron (knee) was placed on the 45-day injured list Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He elected season-ending surgery on his sprained left knee last week, so this is just a formality to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. Cron will be a free agent this offseason.
Aug 15 2020Cron (knee) will have season-ending surgery, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron suffered a sprained left knee in Monday's game against the White Sox and was hoping to avoid surgery until the offseason, but manager Ron Gardenhire said Saturday that the first baseman will sit out the rest of the schedule. The 30-year-old will hit free agency during the offseason. Jeimer Candelario should step in as the primary first baseman with Willi Castro seeing a potential uptick in playing time at third base.
Aug 12 2020Cron acknowledged Tuesday that he'll eventually require surgery on his sprained left knee, but he remains hopeful to play again this season before undergoing a procedure in the winter, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. "[Surgery] has been discussed...We're gonna try to do as best we can to give it enough support to maybe finish the year. It's one of those things where something is gonna have to get done eventually, from the opinions I've gotten so far." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron sprained his knee in Monday's game against the White Sox and was placed on the 10-day injured list a day later. The 30-year-old is without a clear timeline to return, but based on his description of the injury, he seems likely to be sidelined more than the minimum 10 days even if he puts off surgery until the offseason. He's currently donning a brace on the knee in an attempt to strengthen his ligament enough to resume on-field activities, so until he's able to do that, the Tigers likely won't hone in on a target date for him to come off the IL. Jeimer Candelario is expected to serve as the Tigers' primary first baseman while Cron is sidelined.
Aug 11 2020Cron was placed on the 10-day injured list with a sprained left knee Tuesday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron left Monday's game against the White Sox with the injury, and it's evidently severe enough for him to be forced to sit for at least 10 days. His expected return date has not yet been announced. The cleanup hitter's absence will be a blow to a surprisingly competitive Tigers team, as he owned a strong .894 OPS despite a low .190 batting average. Willi Castro was recalled in a corresponding move.
Aug 10 2020Cron left Monday's game against the White Sox with a left knee injury. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Dawel Lugo pinch hit for Cron in the bottom of the fourth inning and shortly thereafter the team announced Cron is undergoing further evaluation for a left knee issue. Jeimer Candelario shifted from third base to first to cover for Cron. It would be a major blow to the Detroit offense if Cron were forced to miss significant time.
Aug 8 2020Cron went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, a walk and an additional run scored in Saturday's 11-5 win in Pittsburgh. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old ended a 1-for-18 slump by going 1-for-4 with two walks, a home run, two runs scored and two RBI during Friday's contest, and he delivered another productive line Saturday. Cron has a .216/.383/.522 slash line with four homer, nine runs and eight RBI though 11 games.
Aug 2 2020Cron is out of the lineup for Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron batted cleanup during the matinee and went 0-for-2 with a run scored and a walk. The 30-year-old is in the midst of a 1-for-18 slump over his last six games. Jordy Mercer is starting at first game in the second game of the twin bill.
Jul 26 2020Cron went 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run home run in Sunday's win over the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron picked a good time for his second home run of the young season, as he went deep against Reds reliever Michael Lorenzen in the ninth inning, turning a 1-1 tie into a 3-1 lead for the Tigers. The 30-year-old looks comfortable in the middle of Detroit's lineup and should post a good number of home runs and RBI the rest of the way.
Jul 24 2020Cron went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in the Tigers' 7-1 loss to the Reds on Opening Day. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: His homer traveled 447 feet and Statcast had it at 112 mph off the bat. As Andrew Simon of MLB.com notes, the Tigers had one home run over 111 mph all of last year. It seems safe to say Cron isn't budging from that cleanup spot.
Jul 16 2020Cron hit two home runs in an intrasquad game Thursday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron hit 25 home runs for Minnesota last season, and he likely could have blasted a few more if a thumb injury hadn't slowed him down in the second half. The 30-year-old is also just two years removed from a 30-homer campaign, so there is definitely plenty of pop in his bat, and he's a solid bet to lead the Tigers in home runs during the abbreviated 2020 season.
Apr 5 2020Cron finished Grapefruit League play with a .346/.452/.731 slash line and three home runs in 12 games. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron had a similarly strong spring with Minnesota in 2019 and then got off to a hot start for the Twins before a thumb injury derailed him in the latter part of the season. The first baseman had offseason thumb surgery and is reportedly fully healthy, so he could provide strong offensive numbers for the Tigers when the 2020 season is able to begin.
Mar 4 2020Cron said he altered his mechanics last season after breaking his thumb but noted that his swing feels more natural heading into 2020, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron had offseason thumb surgery and didn't swing for a while, which he said allowed him to basically reset his swing. This is good news, because the first baseman hit .266 with an .821 OPS, 17 home runs and 54 RBIs in 78 games for the Twins before the injury. After the injury, he played 47 more games and slashed just .229/.280/.420 with seven home runs. A healthy Cron might push for 30 long balls and should hit in the heart of Detroit's order all year.
Feb 25 2020Cron went 1-for-2 with a walk and a solo home run in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron hit 25 home runs last year for the Twins but was limited in the second half because of a thumb injury. He reported to spring training healthy after offseason thumb surgery, and the 30-year-old figures to add some pop to Detroit's lineup. He had a career high 30 long balls in 2018 and could return to that level if he stays healthy in 2020.
Feb 20 2020Cron reported to spring training Saturday and won't face any limitations in camp after requiring surgery on his right thumb in October, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron said he only lost about two weeks from his normal offseason program while undergoing rehab from surgery, so he won't be behind any of his fellow position players during spring training. Per Stavenhagen, the Tigers are slated to roll out a lineup of younger, less established players in their spring opener Friday versus Southeastern University, but Cron could make his Tigers debut in Grapefruit League games Saturday or Sunday. The 30-year-old is poised to serve as the Tigers' everyday first baseman in 2020 and should provide a much-needed power boost to a squad that ranked 29th in the majors in home runs a season ago.
Dec 21 2019Cron (thumb) signed a one-year, $6.1 million contract with the Tigers on Saturday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron saw limited playing time over the second half of the season, and the combination of his decrease in usage and thumb surgery in October resulted in him being non-tendered by the Twins. The 29-year-old will likely be ready for spring training, and he could take over the starting job at first base after Jeimer Candelario struggled to break out in 2019.
Dec 2 2019Cron (thumb) was non-tendered by the Twins on Monday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He had a significant thumb surgery in October and was set to make north of $7 million in arbitration, so this move is not all that surprising. It's unclear if he will be physically ready for spring training, so he may have a hard time catching on elsewhere on a big-league contract in the short term.
Oct 22 2019Cron had a surgical debridement of his right thumb last week, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron battled the thumb issue for much of the season, and the procedure will remove dead or unhealthy tissue from the area. The initial recovery timeline is 6-to-8 weeks, which puts the 29-year-old on track to be ready for spring training. Cron slashed .253/.311/.469 with 25 home runs and 78 RBI in 125 games during 2019.
Oct 10 2019Cron (thumb) will receive a second opinion on his injury that has been labeled as a bone bruise, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron's thumb injury lingered through much of the season, resulting in a pair of trips to the injured list and limitations at the plate. The 29-year-old will receive an outside opinion, with the possibility that a procedure may be able to help his recovery.
Sep 30 2019Cron went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Sunday's win over Minnesota. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cron kicked off the scoring with a two-run shot to left field in the first inning. The blast was his second in as many contests after Cron failed to go deep in his first 17 games in September. The 29-year-old finishes his first season in Minnesota with a .253/.311/.469 slash line along with 25 homers and a career-high 78 RBI.
Sep 30 2019Cron went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Sunday's win over Minnesota.

Jul 23 2018Cron went 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs in a win over the Marlins on Sunday. After seeing his season average take a 37-point dive down to .233 during a miserable June, Cron has bounced back in authoritative fashion during the current month. The 28-year-old is now hitting .373 over 58 July plate appearances, a figure partly fueled by five multi-hit efforts and 10 extra-base hits (seven doubles, three home runs). The trio of round trippers have established a new high-water mark in that category for Cron, who's now just one away from the first 20-homer season of his career.
Jul 23 2018Cron is not in the starting lineup versus the Yankees on Monday, Steve Carney of 620 WDAE reports.Cron is stationed on the bench after going 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored during Sunday's victory over Miami. Ji-Man Choi will serve as Tampa Bay's designated hitter during the series opener.
Jul 20 2018Cron is not in the lineup Friday against the Marlins, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Cron entered the All-Star break with a solid .256/.327/.479 line and a career-high 19 homers. He'll sit Friday, with Ji-Man Choi acting as the Rays' designated hitter.
Jul 14 2018Cron went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run, a walk and another run scored after entering as a pinch hitter Saturday during the Rays' 19-6 win over the Twins.Cron wasn't in the starting lineup but did plenty of damage upon entering the contest. He took a Matt Belisle curveball over the center-field fence in the eighth inning as Tampa Bay piled on during a 15-run stampede across the final three innings. The first baseman has enjoyed a breakthrough 2018 so far, having rattled off a .254/.326/.480 slash with 19 homers and 49 RBI in 371 first-half plate appearances.
Jul 14 2018Cron is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Twins.Ji-Man Choi will get the start at DH against right-hander Jose Berrios. Cron endured a miserable month of June (.130/.244/.299), but he's come on strong of late, going 15-for-37 (.405 average) with two home runs over his last 11 games. He has a 120 wRC+ for the season and should continue to play close to every day in the second half.
Jul 11 2018Cron went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer Wednesday against the Tigers. The homer, Cron's 18th of the season, provided the winning runs for the Rays, turning a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead. That home run total represents a career high for the 28-year-old, who is also setting career bests in on-base percentage (.326), slugging percentage (.475), walk rate (6.2 percent), isolated power (.212) and wRC+ (122).
Jul 10 2018Cron went 3-for-4 with an RBI single, two doubles and a run in an extra-inning win over the Tigers on Monday.Cron has flipped the switch since the calendar flipped to July, following a forgettable June during which he hit just .130. He's hitting .500 (10-for-20) with five doubles, a home run, five RBI, two walks and two runs over the first six games of the new month, raising his season average 17 points to .250 in the process.
Jul 8 2018Cron went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run during Sunday's 9-0 victory over the Mets.Cron delivered a three-run homer in the first inning to spot the Rays with an early lead, his first since June 19. After going 3-for-7 with a double, a home run, three RBI and a walk over Tampa Bay's three-game series with the Mets, Cron is batting .244 with 31 extra-base hits and 42 RBI on the year through 82 games.
Jul 3 2018Cron went 3-for-4 with a game-tying RBI double in the Rays' extra-innings loss to the Marlins on Monday.Cron laced a clutch two-out double to right field in the ninth that plated Jake Bauers and knotted the score at 2-2. The strong night was a welcome start to July for Cron, who'd endured a forgettable June (.130 average). The 28-year-old hadn't mustered a multi-hit effort since June 1 prior to Monday, and he hadn't managed a three-hit tally all season. It remains to be seen if the impressive performance will serve as a launchpad for a hot streak for Cron, who's now slashing .240/.315/.443 on the season.
Jul 3 2018Cron is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Marlins, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. There's no room in the lineup for the Rays' regular designated hitter with the game being played in a National League park. Cron did get the start at first base Monday with a left-hander on the mound for the Marlins but could remain on the bench Wednesday when the Rays face the right-handed Jose Urena.
Jul 1 2018Cron is out of the lineup Sunday against the Astros. The slumping Cron will hit the bench for the second time in three days after finishing June with a .130/.244/.299 batting line over 22 contests. As one of the top power hitters on the roster, Cron still seems on track to retain a near-everyday role in the Rays lineup, but he'll likely be subject to more frequent rest until his bat starts to heat up. Carlos Gomez will serve as the designated hitter in Cron's stead in the series finale.
Jun 29 2018Cron is not in the lineup Friday against the Astros.Cron will sit against a tough right-hander in Gerrit Cole. Matt Duffy will be the Rays' designated hitter Friday.
Jun 24 2018Cron is not in the lineup Sunday against the Yankees.Cron has just two hits in his last 10 games. He's been generally adequate in his first taste of a full-time role, hitting .235/.311/.448 with 16 homers in 72 games. That home run total already matches his career high. Matt Duffy will be the Rays' designated hitter Sunday.
Jun 20 2018Cron is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Astros, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Cron has just one hit over his last eight games, so he'll head to the bench to hit the reset button. Carlos Gomez is starting at DH in his stead, allowing Johnny Field to pick up a start in the outfield.
Jun 19 2018Cron went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and two strikeouts in Tuesday's win over the Astros.Cron got the scoring started with his solo blast in the second inning, and it proved to be the final margin in the 2-1 victory. The 28-year-old has been having a dreadful June, going just 6-for-55 (.109), but four of those six hits have left the yard. Tuesday's homer was his 16th, matching the career-high output he achieved in each of the last three seasons.
Jun 15 2018Cron is out of the lineup against the Yankees on Friday, Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times reports.Cron will get a breather following five straight starts, including a rough four-strikeout showing during Thursday's series opener. Look for him to return to the starting nine Saturday.
Jun 11 2018Cron went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in a loss to the Mariners.Cron launched a 363-foot shot to right in the fourth off James Paxton to snap a 1-1 tie. The round tripper was the second in as many games for Cron, who now counts three homers among his five hits thus far in June.
Jun 9 2018Cron is not in the lineup against Seattle on Saturday.Cron will get a breather after going 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI during Friday's loss. In his absence, Matt Duffy will DH and Christian Arroyo will enter the starting lineup at third base.
Jun 8 2018Cron went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Friday's loss to the Mariners.Cron hit a two-run blast -- his 14th homer of the year -- off reliever Alex Colome in the eighth to bring the Rays within one. It was Cron's second homer in three games, but those have been the only hits he's recorded over his last six contests. The 28-year-old is slashing .257/.325/.473 with 10 doubles, 35 RBI and 34 runs scored. Cron hit 16 home runs in each of the last three seasons as a member of the Angels, and with the increased playing time in Tampa Bay he appears poised to significantly exceed those figures.
Jun 6 2018Cron went 1-for-4 with a solo homer in Wednesday's loss to the Nationals.Cron showed he was dealing with no lingering effects from the forearm contusion that forced his premature exit from Sunday's game, taking Tanner Roark deep in the fifth inning for his 13th homer of the season. The 28-year-old is now hitting a solid .260/.323/.468 through 59 games this season, though his numbers against southpaws are noticeably better (.309/.373/.544 against left-handed pitching).
Jun 5 2018Cron (forearm) is in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Nationals.A hit-by-pitch near the forearm forced Cron from Sunday's game, but X-rays were negative and he will not end up missing a start as a result of the injury. While Cron is playing regularly and is on pace for a 30-homer campaign, he has pretty dramatic lefty/righty platoon splits (.244/.309/.431 against right-handed pitching). He will face right-hander Max Scherzer on Tuesday.
Jun 3 2018Cron exited Sunday's matchup against the Mariners after being hit by a pitch near his right hand, Juan Toribio of The Athletic Tampa Bay reports.Cron was taken for X-rays after getting hit by a pinch, but they came back negative and he was diagnosed with a right forearm contusion, per Toribio. He'll be listed as day-to-day moving forward, as the injury doesn't appear to be very serious. Christian Arroyo replaced Cron as the designated hitter.
May 30 2018Cron went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Athletics.Cron began a parade of solo home runs for the Rays, as all four of the club's runs in the win came via solo jacks. The 28-year-old has a career-best .809 OPS and needs just four more home runs the remainder of the year to match his personal-high of 16.
May 26 2018Cron went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored Saturday against the Orioles.Cron delivered a two-run double in the second inning off Andrew Cashner to put the Rays up 5-1. He has been relatively quiet of late, with this being his first multi-RBI game since May 15. He'll look to use this performance to get back on track, as he is slugging only .432 for the month of May after posting a .552 mark in April.
May 17 2018Cron went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, two runs and a steal in the Rays' 7-1 win over the Angels on Thursday.Cron kept his recent hot streak right on rolling, as this marked this straight game with a homer and his fourth time leaving the yard in his last six contests overall. The 28-year-old also swiped his first bag of the year for good measure and although that shouldn't be considered likely to be a common occurrence, Cron has been providing excellent fantasy value this season as his slash line now sits at .293/.341/.537 with 11 home runs through 164 at-bats.
May 17 2018Cron went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and three runs in a win over the Royals on Wednesday. He was also hit by a pitch.Cron's torrid stretch continued Wednesday, one that's now seen him homer in three of the past five games -- including two straight -- while also reaching safely in 22 consecutive contests overall. The 28-year-old is now hitting an impressive .327 in May, boosting his season average 20 points to .289 during the month.
May 15 2018Cron went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer and a pair of strikeouts in Tuesday's win over the Royals.Cron's homer got the Rays on the board in the first inning, as he extended his hitting streak to eight - including four straight with an extra-base hit. the 28-year-old's current career-high in the home run department is 16, which he's reached in each of the last three seasons, but he's already gone deep nine times in just 39 games to go along with a .284/.331/.503 slash line.
May 12 2018Cron went 2-for-4 with a walk, a home run and two RBI in a 10-3 win during the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Orioles. The blast was his eighth of the season, and Cron has now boosted his slash line to .282/.333/.486 after racking up four straight multi-hit performances, including both ends of Saturday's twin bill.
May 10 2018Cron went 2-for-4 with a run in a loss to the Braves on Wednesday.Cron continues to serve as one of the Rays' steadiest sources of offense, as factoring in Wednesday's production, he's now reached safely in 15 straight games. The 28-year-old has compiled 12 extra-base hits (five doubles, two home runs) overall, and his current .201 ISO represents a career high.
May 1 2018Cron went 1-for-4 with a go-ahead, ninth-inning two-run home run in a win over the Tigers on Monday. With the pitchers' duel between Jacob Faria and Jordan Zimmerman mired in a scoreless tie heading into the visitors' half of the ninth, Cron blasted a Shane Greene offering 401 feet to right center with Denard Span aboard, giving the Rays a 2-0 lead. The round tripper extended Cron's hitting streak to eight games, a span during which he's racked up five of his seven homers on the season.
Apr 28 2018Cron went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run in a win over the Red Sox on Friday.Cron's April hit parade continues, as he's now hit safely in five straight games, and in 13 of his last 14 contests overall. Additionally, although he saw a four-game streak of multiple RBI snapped Friday, he's still driven in an impressive 17 RBI during the month, a figure that's also tops on the team.
Apr 26 2018Cron went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run Thursday against the Orioles.Cron remained hot Thursday, blasting his fourth home run in as many days. He is seeing regular playing time for the first time in his career and he has taken advantage by posting a .517 slugging percentage through 87 at-bats. Like many of the mid-career breakouts over the past few seasons, Cron has elevated his flyball rate so he could continue to hit for plenty of power throughout the season even if his current pace does not continue.
Apr 23 2018Cron went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run in a win over the Twins on Sunday.Cron completed a weekend decimation of Twins pitching with his third round tripper over the last two games, blasting a first-inning Phil Hughes offering into left center to give the Rays an early 2-0 lead. The 28-year-old accumulated nearly half of his 13 RBI on these season over the last pair of outings, as he also drove in four runs on the strength of two homers Saturday. Following a slow start to his Rays career over the first three games of the season, Cron has come alive in April and has five two-hit tallies over the last six contests.
Apr 21 2018Cron went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI in Saturday's 10-1 win over the Twins. With Denard Span currently seeing more action in the outfield due to Kevin Kiermaier's thumb injury, Cron has had the DH spot mostly to himself and he's responded by going 8-for-21 (.381) over the last five games with three homers and six RBI. The 28-year-old has pushed his slash line up to .264/.316/.472 on the season, numbers right in line with his career averages, and with regular playing time in his sights for the foreseeable future, Cron's capable of providing fantasy value even in shallow formats.
Apr 19 2018Cron went 2-for-4 with an RBI single in a 4-2 win over the Rangers on Wednesday.Cron's timely sixth-inning single to center plated Daniel Robertson and snapped a 1-1 tie. The 28-year-old now has an eight-game hitting streak and has reached safely in 10 straight overall, bumping his season average from .167 to .270 in the process.
Apr 17 2018Cron went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in an 8-4 win over the Rangers on Monday.Cron squared up on a fourth-inning Martin Perez offering and blasted a 401-foot shot to center, his second round tripper of the season. The 28-year-old now sports a six-game hitting streak, a span during which he's generated four of his six RBI on the season.
Apr 14 2018Cron went 2-for-4 with a run in a 2-1 loss to the Phillies on Friday.Cron boosted his average up over the Mendoza Line with his first multi-hit effort of the season, which also extended his modest hitting streak to three games. The 28-year-old has hit safely seven of his nine April contests overall, but a 31.9 percent strikeout rate in the early going is still helping keep his average well below acceptable levels.
Apr 8 2018Cron went 1-for-4 with a home run and a walk in Sunday's 8-7 loss to the Red Sox.Although he managed to slug a home run, Cron has struggled so far this season, as he entered Sunday's game with a dismal .167 batting average. Although most of Cron's starts this year have been in the DH spot, he will likely be in line to receive reps at first base with Brad Miller (groin) landing on the disabled list.
Apr 8 2018Cron will serve as the Rays' designated hitter and bat cleanup Sunday against the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. It's not surprising that the Rays will leverage the platoon advantage and insert the righty-hitting Cron into their lineup with southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez starting for Boston, but it appears manager Kevin Cash may be growing comfortable with deploying Cron as an everyday player. The 28-year-old is picking up his fifth consecutive start Sunday, with two turns against right-handed pitching included among that stretch.
Apr 5 2018Cron went 1-for-4 with an RBI double in Wednesday's 7-2 loss to the Yankees.Cron opened the scoring with his first-inning two-bagger that plated Kevin Kiermaier. The 28-year-old has gotten his Rays career off to a slow start overall, going 3-for-16 with a pair of doubles in the five games he's seen action in. He has hit safely in each of his last three starts, however, potentially a sign that he's beginning to come around.
Apr 1 2018Cron is out of the lineup Sunday against the Red Sox, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Cron will ride the pine for back-to-back games against opposing right-handers, suggesting that he may be the soft side of a platoon at first base with Brad Miller. With a 1-for-7 showing at the plate through three games, Miller hasn't exactly established himself as a lineup mainstay yet, so it isn't out of the question that Cron eventually emerges as the primary option at the position.
Mar 31 2018Cron is out of the lineup against the Red Sox on Saturday. With right-hander Rick Porcello taking the mound, Cron will retreat in favor of Brad Miller at first base. He could be back on the bench again for Sunday's series finale with another right-hander (Hector Velazquez) set to pitch.
Mar 25 2018Cron, who's hitting .298 with three home runs and 11 RBI in 50 spring plate appearances, will log many of his starts against left-handed pitching this season, Bill Chastain of MLB.com reports. "Yeah, it's going to be a lot of left-right," Cash said. "But saying that, we know that we really value getting C.J. [Cron] in there a lot. We will have plenty of opportunities where C.J. will play against some righties. Brad [Miller] is going to play, obviously, against righties."Manager Kevin Cash has a potentially good problem brewing at first base, as both Cron and Miller have proven to be above-average hitters at different points in their respective careers. Notably, both are coming off career-low batting averages in 2017, and Miller still appears to be stuck in a bit of a funk (.222 spring average over 19 plate appearances). The schedule works out well early with respect to projected playing time for Cron, as the Rays are slated to face several southpaws through the first two series. Ultimately, the playing time split likely projects as somewhat of a fluid situation in the coming season, with the designated hitter role also an option for getting both players into the lineup simultaneously.
Mar 2 2018Cron, who went 1-for-3 in Thursday's 5-2 Grapefruit League loss to the Orioles, is hitting .333 (4-for-12) with a double, a home run, two RBI and two runs over his first four spring training games. The offseason acquisition has gotten plenty of reps to open the exhibition slate, logging a trio of plate appearances in each contest while Brad Miller (toe) remains sidelined. Cron is reportedly set for a full-time role in the coming season, which would afford him ample opportunity to bounce back from a career-low .248 average and .437 slugging percentage in 2017. Despite the downturn in those numbers, Cron clawed his way to 16 homers for the third straight campaign, and putting a significant dent in his career-high 25.9 percent strikeout rate from last season would go a long way to propping his aforementioned numbers back up.
Feb 26 2018Cron is likely to be a full-time starter for the Rays, Steve Carney of Sports Radio 620 WDAE reports. After being acquired by the Tampa Bay, it was thought that Cron might be set for a role as the short side of a platoon with the left-handed Brad Miller, but manager Kevin Cash says he wants to give Cron a full-time role. Even with full-time at-bats, Cron is unlikely to be a major fantasy producer, as he owns a career .262/.307/.449 slash line and has hit just 24 home runs per 600 plate appearances, a mediocre total for a first baseman. But in AL-only and deep mixed leagues where everyone who plays regularly is an asset, this news should raise Cron's stock somewhat.
Feb 17 2018The Angels traded Cron to the Rays on Saturday in exchange for a player to be named later.Cron wasn't expected to see much playing time behind Albert Pujols and Luis Valbuena, so the Angels decided to ship him off to Tampa Bay, where he'll enter camp with a chance to emerge as the team's starting first baseman. The 28-year-old, who hit .248/.305/.437 with 16 homers in 100 games last season, will compete with Brad Miller for the starting gig in spring, though it's also possible the two settle into a platoon together. In a surprising corresponding move, Corey Dickerson was designated for assignment to clear a roster spot for Cron.
Jan 12 2018Cron agreed to a one-year $2.3 million deal with the Angels on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. This was his first of three offseasons as an arbitration-eligible player. Cron may struggle to see enough at-bats to be useful in most mixed leagues this season, as Luis Valbuena figures to start at first base against most righties, and Albert Pujols will also start at first when Shohei Ohtani gets starts at DH. Cron hit .248/.305/.437 with 16 home runs in 373 plate appearances last season.
Sep 16 2017Cron went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Friday's 7-6 victory over the Rangers.Cron took Ricky Rodriguez deep in the bottom of the sixth inning, which proved to be the deciding runs in a narrow victory. The 27-year-old isn't hitting for as much of an average (.255) in September as he was during his torrid month of August (.308), but the slugger has continued to produce with three homers and 13 RBI through 13 September starts. Cron is just one home run off his career-high mark of 16 that he set both in 2015 and 2016 despite playing in just 85 games this year, leaving fantasy owners to wonder "what if" had manager Mike Scioscia not toyed around with his playing time in the first half of the season.
Sep 5 2017Cron went 3-for-4 with a triple, a home run, a walk, two runs and three RBI in Tuesday's 10-inning, 8-7 win over Oakland.Cron produced two of the game's most important hits, turning a one-run deficit on its head with a two-run homer in the sixth inning before breaking a 6-6 tie with an RBI triple in the eighth. The first baseman launched 16 home runs in each of the past two seasons, but has picked up the pace this year with 14 in just 77 games played. Four of those long balls have come since Aug. 29 and Cron also has 15 RBI in that span.
Sep 3 2017Cron went 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in Saturday's comeback victory over the Rangers.Cron got off to a rough start with three strikeouts in his first three plate appearances, but he totally redeemed himself with a game-tying two-run shot in the ninth inning. The 27-year-old added a sacrifice fly in a three-run 10th inning that sealed the deal for the Halos. Saturday's late heroics provided a snapshot of Cron's 2017 campaign where he got off to a slow start before exploding in the second half. The slugging first baseman is batting .299 with 10 homers and 30 RBI since the All-Star break.
Aug 30 2017Cron went 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs and four RBI in an 8-2 win over Oakland on Tuesday.Cron is slashing a healthy .310/.381/.609 with seven homers and 18 RBI since taking over primary first-base duties at the beginning of August. Both he and Luis Valbuena have been mashing the ball since Yunel Escobar (oblique) went on the disabled list, so manager Mike Scioscia will have a tough decision to make regarding who will sit when his regular third baseman returns later this week. It is possible that the two sluggers will resume their platoon at first base, a move that would certainly put a dent the right-handed Cron's playing time. Until that time comes, fantasy owners can continue to enjoy the 27-year-old's power output.
Aug 29 2017Cron went 1-for-3 with a strikeout in Monday's 3-1 win over the Athletics.Cron has picked up starts in 12 consecutive games, with the injury to Yunel Escobar (oblique) affording both Cron and Luis Valbuena regular spots in the lineup at the corner infield spots. Unfortunately, Cron hasn't been able to do much with the uptick in opportunities, hitting just .220 with three extra-base hits over that 12-game stretch. He'll still be in line for consistent at-bats against left-handed pitching, but once Escobar returns from the disabled list -- perhaps as soon as the weekend -- Cron will likely cede starts against righties to Valbuena.
Aug 15 2017Cron is out of the lineup Monday against the Nationals.Cron normally starts over Luis Valbuena at first base against left-handed pitching, but even with southpaw Gio Gonzalez on the hill for the Nationals, both Cron and Valbuena will find themselves on the bench Monday. With no DH spot available in Washington, Albert Pujols will instead pick up a rare start at first base.
Aug 13 2017Cron batted cleanup and went 1-for-5 with his ninth home run of the season in Sunday's 4-2 win over Seattle.Cron has been on fire of late, homering in three of his last five starts. The slugger's hot stretch extends further than his recent power binge, as he has slashed a healthy .348/.392/.667 since rejoining the majors July 7. The 27-year-old has been seeing regular playing time since Yunel Escobar (oblique) went on the disabled list, and he may have played himself into a regular role once the Halos' third baseman returns to action at the expense of the struggling Luis Valbuena.
Aug 11 2017Cron went 2-for-3 with his eighth home run of the season -- and second in as many days -- in Thursday's 6-3 win over the Mariners. It has been a season marred with injuries and inconsistent playing time, but the 27-year-old appears to have finally found his groove in the month of August, batting .414 (12-for-29) with three homers over eight games. Yunel Escobar's (hamstring) placement on the disabled list has opened up a couple weeks of everyday playing time for Cron, and with the way he is locked in at the plate right now, he makes a solid short-term pickup for any fantasy owner in need of some pop.
Aug 9 2017Cron went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and two RBI in Wednesday's 5-1 win over the Orioles. He's taking advantage of the regular playing time he's been getting lately while Luis Valbuena mans third base, and Cron is now hitting .385 (10-for-26) in seven August games with two homers and eight RBI. With regular third baseman Yunel Escobar (oblique) potentially sidelined until the end of the month, Cron will get a chance to stake his claim to the starting first-base job on a full-time basis.
Aug 9 2017Cron went 2-for-3 with two RBI against the Orioles on Tuesday. He's offered a reliable bat -- although in non-everyday playing time -- since being called back up from Triple-A in July. Over 53 at-bats in that span, Cron has hit .302/.351/.566 with four homers and 13 RBI. The solid run has lifted his season average to .240, but the 27-year-old still possesses only middling upside in the fantasy realm.
Aug 6 2017Cron will start at first base and bat cleanup Sunday against the Athletics, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.Cron will pick up his second start of the series with lefty Sean Manaea on the mound, resulting in Luis Valbuena heading to the bench. Though Cron had batted seventh his last time out Friday, he'll move up a couple spots as the Angels look to cluster more of their right-handed bats at the top of the order.
Aug 3 2017Cron went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer in a 7-0 win over the Phillies on Wednesday. He's been hitting well when given the opportunity lately -- over his last 30 at-bats, Cron has 10 hits, including four homers. However, those at-bats have been spread over 14 games, including three that he didn't start. The limitations on his playing time as a backup first baseman and DH leave the 27-year-old with relatively modest fantasy value despite this hot run.
Jul 30 2017Cron is out of the lineup Sunday against the Blue Jays, Pedro Moura of the Los Angeles Times reports.Cron had drawn the previous three starts at first base, but since two of those turns had come against left-handed starters, it doesn't appear as though he's worked himself out of the short end of a platoon at the position with Luis Valbuena. Until he shows dramatic improvement in his .558 OPS against right-handed pitching, Cron won't be of much use outside of DFS contests or deeper leagues with daily lineup moves.
Jul 28 2017Cron went 1-for-5 with a two-run homer Friday against the Blue Jays.Cron listed his fifth homer of the year in the ninth inning of a game that was already out of hand. Aside from a poor .233 batting average along with a .370 slugging percentage, he also seems to be in a platoon, so he's a difficult player to use in fantasy lineups.
Jul 26 2017Cron is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Indians. After a string of four straight starts with lefties on the mound for the opposition, Cron retreated to the bench for Tuesday's series opener, as righty Mike Clevinger took the hill for the Tribe. Cron will sit again Wednesday in favor of Luis Valbuena with another righty in Carlos Carrasco on the mound, so it appears safe to conclude that Cron is still on the short end of a platoon at first base.
Jul 23 2017Cron will start at first base and bat fifth Sunday against the Red Sox.Cron will draw his fourth consecutive start Sunday, and though he's performed respectably with four hits in 12 at-bats over the previous three contests, the run of regular playing time should soon come to an end. The Angels had a spot open in the lineup for Cron the last three games with the Red Sox having deployed a left-handed starting pitcher in each of those contests, resulting in platoon mate Luis Valbuena hitting the bench. Valbuena is back in the lineup Sunday, but he'll play third while Cron covers first base due to Albert Pujols receiving a routine day off for rest.
Jul 20 2017Cron went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 7-0 win over the Nationals. The 27-year-old got a start against the left-handed Gio Gonzalez and connected on his fourth homer of the season. Cron has been shuttled back and forth between the majors and the minors, as well as having his role drastically changed on a regular basis by manager Mike Scioscia, all of which has severely diminished his fantasy value after contributing 32 long balls over the past two season. He is currently in a platoon at first base, but Cron could carve out a larger role if he can outperform Luis Valbuena and his .183 batting average.
Jul 16 2017Cron mashed a pinch-hit, two-run home run in Sunday's win over the Rays.Cron's eighth-inning blast broke a 2-2 tie, propelling Los Angeles to a 4-3 win. The 27-year-old first baseman has put up an underwhelming .220/.271/.333 line after hitting 16 home runs in each of the previous two seasons, but should be able to earn more playing time if he heats up given that alternative option Luis Valbuena owns an equally unimpressive .186/.267/.344 line.
Jul 7 2017Cron was called up by the Angels on Friday.Cron has spent 34 games with the Angels this season, hitting .212/.266/.297 with two home runs and 14 RBI. The 31-year-old went just 6-for-35 during his time with Triple-A Salt Lake over the last 10 games, but will provide additional depth to the big-league roster behind Luis Valbuena at first base. Cron could see a few starts in the near future when left-handers take the mound, especially with Valbuena's struggles continuing at the plate.
Jun 23 2017Cron was sent down to the minors Friday prior to the series opener against Boston.Cron has been struggling recently, failing to record a hit during his last four games (0-for-9 with three walks and three strikeouts) and seemingly losing time to Luis Valbuena as the latter starts to heat up. In a corresponding move, the team recalled Eduardo Paredes from Salt Lake. Even though Cron is heading back to Triple-A, the first baseman will likely come be back in the big leagues before long.
Jun 11 2017Cron got the nod at first against the right-handed Mike Fiers on Saturday, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in a 3-1 loss to the Astros. It appeared that a platoon at first base with Luis Valbuena was developing, but manager Mike Scioscia revealed his plans to give both players semi-regular playing time, according to The Orange County Register's Jeff Fletcher. Cron has started four of the six games since being recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake, contributing a home run and four RBI over that span. A strict platoon would have depleted the majority of the 27-year-old's fantasy value, but with the news of a time share, deep-league owners could look to the slugger for some sporadic power.
Jun 7 2017Cron's lone hit in Tuesday's win over the Tigers was a mammoth two-run home run, his second of the season. It didn't take long for the 27-year-old to go yard after returning from his stint in the minors. Cron got the start at first against a southpaw Tuesday a day after spelling Albert Pujols on Sunday. While he has started two straight games, it is unclear if manager Mike Scioscia is willing to give the slugger regular playing time when the trio of Pujols, Luis Valbuena and Yunel Escobar are all healthy. It would be best to wait for a larger sample size of playing time before jumping on Cron as a potential pickup.
Jun 3 2017Cron was recalled by the Angels on Saturday.Cron's two-home run, seven-RBI night Thursday at Triple-A was apparently enough to convince the Angels that he's over his slump and ready to return to the major league club. He'll take the struggling Jefry Marte's roster spot upon arriving in Anaheim. Cron will have to wait until Sunday to make his return to the lineup, however, as Albert Pujols is serving as the DH and Luis Valbuena is playing first base Saturday against the Twins.
May 22 2017Cron went 1-for-4 with a grand slam in Sunday's 12-5 win over the Mets. The 27-year-old got off the schneid in grand fashion, recording his first home run in his 86th plate appearance of the season. Injuries and a slow start to the season (.232/.281/.305) have diminished his fantasy value, but he has shown an ability to hit for power in the past (.442 career slugging percentage), so there is reason to believe he can turn things around. Cron should get every opportunity to do so over the next couple of weeks while Yunel Escobar (hamstring) recovers on the disabled list.
May 20 2017Cron is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Mets.Jefry Marte gets the start at first base Saturday with Cron receiving the off day. Cron is hitting just .176/.263/.235 with one extra base hit over 17 at-bats since returning from the disabled list on May 14.
May 16 2017Cron started at first base and went 1-for-3 with a walk and a double in Monday's win over the White Sox.The slugging first baseman was expected to land on the short side of a platoon at first base upon his return from the disabled list, but an injury to Yunel Escobar has opened up regular playing time for the 27-year-old. Cron hasn't done much in his limited playing time this season (.224/.274/.269), but with 32 combined home runs over the past two seasons, he is worth adding in deep leagues for power while he is seeing regular at-bats.
May 14 2017Cron (foot) was activated from the 10-day disabled list, Maria Guardado of MLB.com reports. He'll start at first base and bat sixth in the lineup Sunday against the Tigers.Cron rejoins the Angels following a three-game rehab assignment at Triple-A Salt Lake, during which he went 5-for-12 with a home run and two doubles. With Luis Valbuena beating him back from the disabled list, Cron looks bound to settle for the small side of a platoon at first base, though both will be in Sunday's lineup with designated hitter Albert Pujols (personal) unavailable.
May 14 2017Cron (foot) was activated from the 10-day disabled list, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
May 12 2017Cron (foot) went 2-for-4 in a rehab game with Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday, his first action since taking a pitch to the wrist Sunday, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.Cron played all nine innings at first base, a firm indication he's fit to resume everyday baseball activities. The 27-year-old says his bruised foot has completely healed, but the Angels are unsure of how many at-bats they want him to get in the minors. Luis Valbuena and Jefry Marte have been filling in as a platoon at first base, so there's no pressing need to have Cron back in the lineup right away.
May 7 2017Cron (foot) is day-to-day with a right wrist injury after being hit by a pitch at Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday, Pedro Moura of the Los Angeles Times reports.Cron is down with the Bees on a rehab stint for a foot contusion suffered on April 28. The X-rays came back negative on his wrist Sunday, so his day-to-day status bodes well for his chances of getting back to the big club in the next few days as originally planned.
May 6 2017Cron (foot) is scheduled to begin his rehab assignment with Triple-A Salt Lake on Saturday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.Barring any setbacks during the rehab games, Cron is expected to rejoin the Angels shortly after he's eligible to return from the disabled list May 9. With Luis Valbuena also back from injury, it remains unclear what kind of playing time Cron will see at first base upon activation.
May 1 2017Cron (foot) was diagnosed with just a foot contusion after examinations found no further damage, the Orange County Register reports. The Angels are expecting a swift return from the disabled list as a result. Cron is eligible to return May 9th against the Athletics, but the question is who will get the playing time at first base following the return of the also-injured Luis Valbuena.
Apr 29 2017Cron (foot) was placed on the 10-day DL on Saturday, Pedro Moura of the Los Angeles Times reports. He left Friday's game after fouling a pitch off his foot, and while initial X-rays came back negative, it would seem to be something more than a minor contusion. Cron hit .233 with zero home runs in 66 plate appearances prior to the injury, so he had likely already been dropped or bench in most mixed leagues. Jefry Marte will get the starts at first base for now, but Luis Valbuena should take over the bulk of the work there once he is activated from the DL next week.
Apr 28 2017Cron was forced to leave Friday's game against the Angels after fouling a ball off his foot, Pedro Moura of the Los Angeles Times reports.Cron was on crutches as he left the stadium, but X-rays on his foot came back negative. He may need a day off or two, but it doesn't sound like this one will have major repercussions for Cron. Expect an update from the team before Saturday night's game.
Apr 28 2017Cron went 2-for-3 with an RBI double in Thursday's 2-1 win over the Athletics.Cron logged his first multi-hit game since April 9 and drove in the second and final run of the night for the Angels in the first with a two-bagger that plated Albert Pujols. The 27-year-old has struggled to make hard contact thus far this season, with a pair of doubles as the only extra-base hits he's amassed over 61 plate appearances after he set career highs in doubles (25), triples (2) and equaled a personal best with 16 homers in 2016. Cron has split time with Jefry Marte at first base, although the latter's struggles (.163/.234/.279 over 47 plate appearances) run even deeper than Cron's.
Apr 25 2017Cron remains out of the lineup Tuesday against the A's, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.Jefry Marte got the nod Monday against lefty Francisco Liriano, and despite an 0-for-3 showing Monday, Marte will remain at first base against right-hander Jesse Hahn. Cron seems to be in the doghouse after batting just .208/.259/.226 in his first 59 plate appearances of 2017. It's uncertain where exactly Cron will fit upon Luis Valbuena's return from a hamstring injury.
Apr 24 2017Cron is not in the lineup Monday against the Blue Jays.Cron will head to the bench in favor of Jefry Marte as southpaw Francisco Liriano headed to the mound for the Blue Jays. Despite being first on the depth chart, Cron has found himself as part of a platoon with Marte, so it will be interesting to see how his playing time is effected once Luis Valbuena (hamstring) returns from the DL.
Apr 16 2017Cron is back in the lineup at first base for Sunday's game against the Royals, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. He'll bat sixth in the order.Cron had curiously vanished from the lineup card in each of the previous three games, with manager Mike Scioscia deployed either Albert Pujols or Jefry Marte at first base. Since Pujols sees most of his at-bats as a DH these days, Marte looks like Cron's primary competition for starts, and up to this point, the numbers have favored Cron, who has gone 7-for-23 with three runs and an RBI.
Apr 15 2017Cron is not in the lineup Saturday against Kansas City, 610 Sports Radio in Kansas City reports.Cron sat against left-hander Danny Duffy on Friday, and he'll remain out of the lineup Saturday, even with righty Nate Karns on the mound for Kansas City. Albert Pujols will get the nod at first base, while Mike Trout serves as the DH.
Apr 14 2017Cron is not in the lineup Friday against the Royals, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.Cron has become a part of a platoon with Jeffry Marte in the early going, so the former will head to the bench with southpaw Danny Duffy toeing the rubber for Kansas City. Look for Cron to resume his normal role in the lineup Saturday when right-hander Nathan Karns takes the hill.
Apr 14 2017Cron came off the bench Thursday, going 0-for-1 in his only plate appearance against the Rangers. It appeared that a strict platoon was developing with both Cron and Jeffry Marte. However, in a surprising move, manager Mike Scioscia benched the slugger against the right-handed Yu Darvish on Thursday. The 27-year-old is batting .304 (7-for-23) in seven games this season, so the benching is a bit puzzling. Cron was still worth rostering as the strong side of a first base platoon, but after Thursday's lineup construction, it is unclear what Scioscia has in mind regarding playing time, making it hard to roster either first baseman for the time being.
Apr 11 2017Cron is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Rangers.Cron has been solid at the plate after playing in five games and has gone 6-for-19 (.316) over said outings. However, he'll head to the bench Tuesday while Jefry Marte starts at first base.
Apr 8 2017Cron is out of the lineup Saturday against the Mariners. With this off day Cron will have started four of the Angels' first six games of the season. He has gone 4-for-15 over that span with zero extra-base hits. Jefry Marte will start at first base and hit seventh against righty Felix Hernandez.
Apr 6 2017Cron went 2-for-4 with a run in Wednesday's 5-0 win over the A's.Cron was back in the lineup Wednesday after getting the night off Tuesday with southpaw Sean Manaea on the mound. The 27-year-old outfielder scored the first run of the game for the Angels when he came home on a second-inning Andrelton Simmons double, and he's now reached safely in four of his eight 2017 plate appearances. Cron should have plenty of RBI opportunities this season if he can stay healthy, considering he'll usually follow the potent trio of Kole Calhoun, Mike Trout and Albert Pujols in the order. He amassed career highs in doubles (25), triples (2), RBI (69) and batting average (.278) last season while matching a personal-best 16 home runs.
Apr 4 2017Cron is out of the lineup Tuesday against the A's.Jefry Marte will take over at first base and bat fifth against lefty Sean Manaea. Cron hit just .237/.287/.387 against lefties last year while Marte hit .244/.322/.462 against southpaws in 2016. The two players may be deployed in a strict platoon at first base until Luis Valbuena (hamstring) is cleared to return to action.
Mar 30 2017Cron went 1-for-2 and blasted his fourth home run of the spring in Wednesday's win over the Brewers.Cron may have done enough with his bat this spring (.313 with four homers) to win the Angels' starting first base job outright, but a hamstring injury took Luis Valbuena out of the competition, opening up everyday playing time for the slugging first baseman to start the season. The 27-year-old contributed 16 homers and 69 RBI in 407 at-bats last season before injuries took a hold of his season, so there is potential for 20-plus homers in the slugger's bat if he can hang on the the job all year and stay healthy himself.
Mar 23 2017With Luis Valbuena (hamstring) heading for an MRI on Thursday, Cron's chances of becoming the Angels' starter at first base increase, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Both veteran sluggers have been battling for playing time all spring, with neither taking a significant lead at any point. Even though Valbuena's hamstring injury wasn't considered serious at first, the timing of it could lead to Cron winning the job outright. The 27-year-old is slashing .340/.393/.640 in 54 spring training plate appearances after posting career-best numbers in 2016 (.278 with 16 homers and 69 RBI over 116 games). This news bumps his value up, as regular at-bats to start the year could lead to some cheap power numbers.
Mar 9 2017Cron -- who is battling for an everyday role -- kept his hot spring going Wednesday, going 1-for-3 with a double, a steal and a run scored in a win over Cincinnati.Cron is slashing .364/.417/.591 in 22 at-bats, putting a strong foot forward in the battle for the Angels' everyday role at first base. His competition, Luis Valbuena, is also playing well (.308/.357/.539), but he has done it in nine fewer at-bats after being eased into action following offseason surgery. It's tough to say that either player has taken a lead in the position battle, and manager Mike Scioscia likely won't tip his hand until we get closer to the regular season. It is worth noting that both of Cron's stolen bags this spring have come on double-steals where he was the delayed steal from third to home, so we are not seeing him turn into a speedster all of a sudden.
Mar 1 2017Cron went 2-for-3 with his first home run of the spring in Tuesday's win over the Cubs.In most cases, spring training stats do not matter; Cron, however, is an exception to the rule when you consider that he is locked in a position battle with the newly-acquired Luis Valbuena. Both players offer plus power and sub-par defense at first base, so how they perform -- both with the bat and the glove -- will determine who ends up with the lion's share of starts. Even with the less-preferred handedness, Cron will be given a fair shot to win the job after slashing a career-best .278/.325/.467 in 443 plate appearances last year.
Feb 20 2017Cron, who underwent surgery on his thumb last October, is fully recovered and won't face any limitations in camp, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports. This isn't a huge surprise, as he was never expected to miss any spring training time after surgery, but this is good news for Cron, who will reportedly be competing with Luis Valbuena for playing time next season. The 27-year-old is coming off a career-high .278 bating average, while adding 16 homers in his injury-shortened 2016.
Feb 14 2017Cron (thumb) is expected to begin a season-long competition for playing time with Luis Valbuena as spring training begins, the Orange County Register reports. There are a few variables in play, including the health of Albert Pujols, Cron's health following October thumb surgery, and the Angels' defensive plans around the infield with the addition of Danny Espinosa via trade this winter. Nevertheless, Cron has 20-25 homer pop if he finds a way into the lineup on a daily basis, while the improvement he showed in his strikeout rate last season (dropped from 20.3% to 16.9%) bodes well for his chances of sustaining his 16-point increase in batting average to last season's .278 mark.
Oct 25 2016Cron underwent an arthroscopic procedure to address a left thumb impingement Tuesday.Cron was apparently experiencing some pain at the base of his thumb, although it's unclear how and when the injury presented itself. The first baseman is expected to be cleared for full activity in 6-to-8 weeks, which should keep him from missing any time during spring training.
Sep 7 2016Cron went 1-for-4 with a solo homer in a loss to the A's on Wednesday.Cron's blast in the seventh inning was the only run the Angels could muster against starter Jharel Cotton, who pitched 6.1 innings in his major league debut. Cron has homered five times in his last 10 games, bringing his slugging percentage to .498 this season.
Sep 4 2016Cron went 1-for-4 with a solo homer Sunday against the Mariners.Cron has now hit safely in 11 straight games, and he's slashing .288/.335/.500 on the year. Since his rookie campaign in 2014, he's seen his batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage rise significantly in each of his last two seasons, making him a player on the rise.
Aug 31 2016Cron went 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored a run in Wednesday's 3-0 win over the Reds.Cron extended his hitting streak to eight games with his fourth straight multi-hit effort Wednesday. Since being activated from the DL with a hand injury, Cron has hit safely in nine of 11 games. He's 16-for-44 (.364) with three home runs, 10 RBI and six runs since Aug. 20.
Aug 30 2016Cron blasted two home runs in a 2-for-4 game with three RBI in Tuesday's win over the Reds.Cron extended his hitting streak to seven games with the effort and now has three home runs over his past two games. He's now up to 14 home runs in just 87 games and should have no problem blowing past his career high of 16 home runs set last year (in 113 games) if he gets regular playing time down the stretch. Cron posted a .439 slugging percentage last year, a mark that clearly wouldn't pass muster given his lack of other tools. He's up to .498 this season, and even though he has shown lackluster plate discipline (5.5 percent walk rate, .337 OBP), his power is looking like it will be enough to make him a productive major leaguer.
Aug 30 2016Cron went 3-for-4 with a double, a homer, two runs and two RBI in Monday's 9-2 win over the Reds.Cron was one of four Angels to leave the yard against Reds starter Dan Straily. The 26-year-old has strung together consecutive three-hit games, and is beginning to solidify himself as the clean-up hitter in Los Angeles. That's a valuable role with Mike Trout and Albert Pujols occupying the two preceding lineup spots.
Aug 29 2016Cron went 3-for-4 with a triple and a run scored in Sunday's win over the Tigers. He's been solid since coming off the DL last weekend, hitting .278 (9-for-32), but the triple was his first extra-base hit during that stretch. Expect Cron to find his power stroke again soon enough.
Aug 20 2016Cron (hand) was activated from the disabled list and is in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Yankees, Bill Shaikin of the LA Times reports. As expected, Cron will return Saturday after missing more than a month with a fractured hand. The infielder struggled mightily while on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Salt Lake, but he'll nonetheless slot into the lineup at first base Saturday. Cron will bat sixth in the order against the Yankees' Luis Cessa.
Aug 19 2016Cron (hand) is expected to come off the DL on Saturday, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.Cron had been getting hot at the plate over his last nine games before he broke his hand, as he posted a .378/.429/.838 line with five home runs over that time. However, Cron, who's been out since July 9, had a very poor showing on his rehab assignment at Triple-A Salt Lake, going just 3-for-20 with five strikeouts over six games.
Aug 12 2016Cron will begin his rehab assignment at Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday. With this latest news, it seems likely that Cron will be back in action with the Angels by the end of next week. Before getting injured, Cron was posting a career-best line of .278/.333/.475. Until he returns, Jefry Marte is expected to continue starting at first for the Angels.
Aug 9 2016Cron (hand) is expected to progress to taking live batting practice soon, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.Doctors cleared Cron to begin hitting last week, less than a month after he suffered a broken left hand a result of a hit-by-pitch. Given his progress, it seems Cron has a real chance to beat the front end of his original 6-to-8 week estimated return timetable, although he will likely need a few games in the minors to shake the rust before ultimately being activated.
Aug 3 2016Cron (hand) can begin hitting again, and will work out in Arizona on Thursday, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.Cron broke his hand July 8 after getting hit with a pitch, and seems to be progressing nicely on the 6-to-8 week timetable that he was given. He has been cleared to hit almost four weeks after undergoing surgery to repair the fracture. It still appears as though he won't be back until late August, but this may bump up his return date if he continues to show signs of improvement over the next couple weeks.
Jul 11 2016Cron (hand) will miss 6-8 weeks, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports.Cron suffered a broken hand after being hit by a pitch on July 8th and will begin his recovery following surgery Tuesday. The 26-year-old was having the best season of his young career prior to the injury, hitting .278/.333/.475 with 11 home runs, 16 doubles, and 50 RBI. Barring any setback, it appears Cron will be back with the Angels in late August or early September.
Jul 8 2016Cron was placed on the 15-day DL after suffering a broken left hand in Friday's game, the Los Angeles Times' Pedro Moura reports. He was hit on the hand by a pitch from Mike Wright and will presumably miss a month or more. Ji-Man Choi was recalled from Triple-A and figures to slot right into Cron's role of primary first baseman. A more concrete timetable for Cron's return should become clear in the coming days.
Jul 8 2016Cron suffered a fractured left hand in Friday's game against the Orioles and is ticketed for the 15-day DL, the Orange County Register's Jeff Fletcher reports. He was hit on the hand by a pitch from Mike Wright during Friday's contest and was replaced by Jefry Marte at first base. The Angels hardly have any competent hitters surrounding Mike Trout when everyone is healthy, and now the team is a bit banged up. Albert Pujols is available to play some first base, but Marte also figures to get some starts there while Cron is out. Look for the team to officially place him on the DL either Friday night or prior to Saturday's game.
Jul 5 2016Cron went 2-for-4 with a walk, two home runs and four RBI against the Rays on Tuesday.Cron had a solo shot off Jake Odorizzi during a four-run second and a three-run drive against Enny Romero in a six-run ninth, his second multi-homer game in four days. The first baseman is off to a ridiculous start in July, going 11-for-24 with five homers, 13 RBI and eight runs scored.
Jul 3 2016Cron was a major contributor in the 21-run assault against the Red Sox on Saturday, going 6-for-6 with two homers, a double and five RBI.Cron has been quietly productive for most of the season, but has let loose in the first two games of July, notching three homers and nine RBI over that span. The former first-round pick should be considered an option for those looking to grab cheap power at first base, as he is slashing .287/.340/.473 with nine homers and a .186 ISO through 71 games.
Jul 1 2016Cron went 2-for-5 with a grand slam in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Red Sox.Cron made Steven Wright pay for loading them up in the sixth, blasting a 3-2 pitch 423 feet over the Green Monster. It extended the 26-year-old's hitting streak to four games, a stretch that's included a trio of multi-hit efforts. It was only his second homer since June 1 but outside of his long-ball drought, Cron was outstanding last month. He finished with a .303/.361/.470 line over 66 at-bats, and raised his average 15 points.
Jun 25 2016Cron is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the A's, Pedro Moura of the Los Angeles Times reports.Cron's trend of reverse splits has continued into this season, with the 26-year-old managing a .191/.291/.340 line against lefties and a .277/.324/.434 line against same-handed pitching. Lefty Dillon Overton is starting for the A's on Saturday. There has been no indication that his role is in jeopardy, but Cron figures to continue sitting occasionally against southpaws.
Jun 19 2016Cron is out of the lineup Sunday.Cron has come through with a pair of three-hit games in both of his last two starts, but it won't be enough for him to maintain a spot in the lineup Sunday, as manager Mike Scioscia will deploy Jefry Marte at first base. Despite his recent surge, Cron carries a meager .318 on-base percentage with five homers in 196 at-bats this season, so he won't be guaranteed a regular spot in the lineup until he displays a little more pop.
Jun 19 2016Cron went 3-for-5 with a double in Saturdays' 7-1 victory over the A's.The 26-year-old continues to rack up the hits in June, now having raised his season average 15 points since May 31. Cron has three-hit efforts in two of his last three contests, and has nearly half of his 11 doubles on the season in just 36 June at-bats. He's slashing a stellar .333/.368/.472 for the month overall.
Jun 17 2016Cron is out of the lineup for Friday's game against Oakland.Cron gets the night off Friday as manager Mike Scioscia rolls out a lineup where Albert Pujols takes over at first base and Jefry Marte serves as the designated hitter. The 26-year-old Cron is mired in a bit of a power drought as he's failed to homer in June, but he's put together a respectable .300/.344/.433 slash line through 11 games this month.
Jun 16 2016Cron went 3-for-5 with a double, three RBI and two runs in Wednesday's 10-2 victory over the Twins. The 26-year-old came through with his first multi-hit outing of June, raising his monthly line to .300/.344/.433 in the process. Cron endured a forgettable start to the season over the first month, but has seen his numbers progressively improve since that point. The Angels' first baseman has boosted his average 28 points since May 1, while also amassing 25 of his 29 RBI on the season over that span.
Jun 10 2016Cron is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Indians, according to Eric Kay of the Angels.Cron will be held out Friday with the Angels taking on a tough right-hander in Corey Kluber. With Cron out, Albert Pujols will serve as the Angels' designated hitter, and Jefry Marte will get the start at first base.
Jun 8 2016Cron is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Yankees, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.Cron is riding a modest three-game hitting streak and is batting .267 in June, but he'll get what appears to be a regular day off Wednesday. Jefrey Marte will take over at first base in his absence and bat fifth against Nathan Eovaldi.
Jun 5 2016Cron is out of the lineup Sunday against the Pirates. The Angels ended up going with Albert Pujols at first base for all three games of their series in Pittsburgh, but Cron should be back in lineup Monday against the Yankees, when manager Mike Scioscia will be able to deploy Pujols at his usual DH spot.
Jun 3 2016Cron is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Pirates, Eric Kay of the Angels reports. With no designated hitter available as the Angels are playing on the road against a National League team, Cron will take a seat on the bench for Friday's contest. Cron is batting .250/.306/.390 on the season and recently hit two home runs Tuesday against the Tigers.
May 29 2016Cron is out of the lineup Sunday against the Astros.Cron has slumped to a 2-for-16 line over his past four games, so manager Mike Scioscia will give the 26-year-old a day off to clear his head. The lightly-used Kaleb Cowart will step in as the Angels' first baseman for the afternoon.
May 16 2016Cron is not in Monday's lineup to face the Dodgers, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.Interleague play means that Cron will shift to the dugout while Albert Pujols takes over at first base, instead of serving as the team's designated hitter. Unless Pujols gets a day off, it's possible Cron will remain a reserve option over the entire four-game series.
May 11 2016Cron went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer and a walk against the Cardinals on Wednesday. He provided the only damage the Angels were able to do against Jaime Garcia, and although Cron's season stats remain less than pretty -- .263/.349/.368 won't get many fantasy owners feeling hot and heavy -- daily-league players should pay attention to what he's been doing when the Angels have put him in the lineup lately. Over his last 18 games (15 starts), Cron has gone 21-for-55 (.382) with a couple homers and 10 RBI. His excellent contact skill and above-average pop make him an underrated fantasy asset.
May 3 2016Cron is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Brewers.Cron took a seat Monday also, and he'll do so again as the Angels continue their series in a National League park against the Brewers. With no DH option, Albert Pujols will man first base once again in place of Cron.
May 2 2016Cron is out of the lineup Monday against the Brewers, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports. With the Angels playing in a National League park, there's no designated hitter spot to allow both Cron and Albert Pujols to play Monday, so Cron will take the night off. There's a decent chance that he won't slot into the lineup during the series with Milwaukee, but the Angels play the Rays over the weekend, so he should be back to regular playing time for that series.
May 2 2016Cron went 3-for-5 Sunday with a run scored and two RBI.It's his third multi-hit performance in his last four games, but despite the hot streak Cron still has a weak .230/.313/.311 slash line on the season with only one home run and six RBI. He'll find himself on the bench Monday when the Angels begin an interleague series in Milwaukee.
Apr 27 2016Cron is out of the lineup for Wednesday's matchup with Kansas City, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.Despite going 2-for-2 and reaching base in each of his four plate appearances Tuesday, Cron is on the bench for the third time in the last five games. Albert Pujols will start at first while Ji-Man Choi is batting ninth as the designated hitter.
Apr 25 2016Cron is not in the starting lineup Monday, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports. He'll take a seat with the Angels facing right-hander Ian Kennedy on Monday. Albert Pujols is playing first base while Mike Trout gets a night off from defensive responsibilities as the team's DH.
Apr 23 2016Cron is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Mariners.Despite hitting a home run Friday, Cron will be replaced in the lineup Saturday by Ji-Man Choi as manager Mike Scioscia tries to get as many left-handed bats into the lineup as possible with the Angels facing ace Felix Hernandez. Cron is off to a tough start at the dish to start the season, slashing .161/.254/.232. Despite the early seasn struggles, Cron has still played in nearly every game this season.
Apr 13 2016Cron is back in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the A's, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports. After getting the day off Tuesday, Cron will draw back into the fifth spot in the order Wednesday against Oakland left-hander Eric Surkamp. Cron has slumped to start the season, going 1-for-23 through his last six games. He'll take over at first base Wednesday while Albert Pujols will serve as the Angels' DH against Surkamp.
Apr 12 2016Cron is out of Tuesday's lineup against the A's, Pedro Moura of the Los Angeles Times reports.Cron is in a major slump to start the year (2-for-26), so Ji-Man Choi will get the start at DH with Albert Pujols getting a second straight start at first base Tuesday.
Apr 8 2016Cron is out of Friday's lineup against the Rangers. He started the year 2-for-11 at the plate, and will start Friday's game on the bench in favor of Ji-Man Choi. Provided Cron's bat comes around to even league average, he should be the Angels' primary first baseman this season.
Feb 20 2016Cron is the likely candidate to start the season at first base if Albert Pujols has to miss time while recovering from foot surgery, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports. The Angels are still hopeful that Pujols will be able to suit up on Opening Day, but manager Mike Scioscia made it clear that the aging slugger will not be rushed back into action. Cron was already set to see his share of at-bats as the team's DH, but he could see a bump in the batting order if the team needs to compensate for the loss of power. While he will hit his home runs, it is a bit concerning that Cron's ISO fell nearly 20 points last season, as he doesn't offer much upside apart from his ability to leave the yard.
Sep 26 2015Cron went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, two RBI and two runs scored in an 8-4 win over Seattle on Friday.Cron has put together a pretty nice season for the Angels, as he has 15 homers and 48 RBI in 104 games played to accompany a solid .265 average. If he can find a consistent starting role next year, Cron is a good candidate to crack 25 home runs for the first time in his career. In any case, he's worth taking deep in drafts next year to see if there's a full breakout.
Sep 26 2015Cron went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in a 3-2 win over the Mariners on Saturday.Cron continues his recent power-surge, as he has two homers and five RBI over his last three games. The young righty has put together a pretty nice season, as he has 16 homers and 49 RBI in just 347 at-bats. If he develops as an everyday player next year, Cron would be a good candidate for 25-plus home runs, 75-plus RBI, and an average in the .275 range. Those numbers alone would make him must own in almost every format.
Sep 19 2015Cron is not in the lineup for Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Twins, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.Besides Cron, catcher Carlos Perez is the only other Angels regular out of the lineup for Saturday's nightcap. Cron went 0-for-6 with an RBI and two strikeouts in Game 1.
Sep 8 2015Cron went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a loss to the Dodgers on Monday.Cron continues to show power during regular time with the big club. He now has 10 RBI in just six games this month, and could continue to see time at first base for as long as Albert Pujols is dealing with a foot injury.
Aug 16 2015Cron is out of the lineup Sunday against the Royals.Cron finds himself on the bench for the third time in four games as the Angels turn over DH duties to David Murphy. It's a bit surprising that Cron has seen his at-bats decline of late given that he's hit the ball much better since his call-up from Triple-A Salt Lake in late June, but it's possible manager Mike Scioscia just wanted to get additional lefty bats in his lineup against the right-hander Yordano Ventura.
Aug 8 2015Cron is out of the lineup Saturday against the Orioles, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.Cron impacted Friday's contest as a pinch hitter, crushing a ball over 450 feet for his seventh home runs of the 2015 campaign. However, it did not earn him a start Saturday, as David Murphy will once again serve as the designated hitter.
Aug 7 2015Cron hit a pinch-hit two-run home run in an 8-4 win over the Orioles on Friday.Cron hit an absolute bomb that was measured well over 450 feet. He now has seven homers and it's just a matter of playing time for Cron if he wants to become more fantasy relevant.
Aug 5 2015Cron went 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBI, Wednesday against Cleveland.Cron came up big with a two-run single to tie the game in the ninth inning, leading to the Angels win. He's starting out August the way he hit in July, when he posted a .959 OPS.
Aug 2 2015Cron remains out of the lineup Sunday against the Dodgers. With no DH spot available at Dodgers Stadium, Cron will be on the bench for the third straight game as Albert Pujols stays in as the Angels' first baseman.
Jul 31 2015Cron is out of the lineup Friday against the Padres, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.Cron will likely receive multiple days off without the designated hitter available for the weekend series against the Dodgers. He may receive a start at first base if the Angels decide to give Albert Pujols a day off, and he could see a couple at-bats as a pinch hitter.
Jul 22 2015Cron is out of the lineup Wednesday against Minnesota. With Trout taking over the DH spot and Pujols holding down first base, there wasn't room in the Angels' lineup for Cron on Wednesday. In all, Cron has put together an excellent month of July, batting .488 over 43 at-bats with three home runs and 11 RBI.
Jul 20 2015Cron is out of the lineup for the back end of Monday's doubleheader against the Red Sox.Cron has become an everyday player since his return to the big leagues in late June, but with manager Mike Scioscia moving Mike Trout to DH for the nightcap to give the star some rest, Cron will be a lineup casualty. The 25-year-old didn't get too involved in the Angels' 11-1 onslaught in the early game, going 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
Jul 7 2015Cron is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game in Colorado, Angels VP of Communications Tim Mead reports. With the Angels playing in a National League park, the red-hot Cron will likely be limited to pinch-hitting duties Tuesday and Wednesday. He is 9-for-22 with a pair of home runs since being recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on June 29, establishing himself as the Angels' regular DH, at least for the immediate future.
Jul 5 2015Cron had a career night against the Rangers on Friday, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, and six RBI.Cron has received regular playing time since his latest call up at the end of June, and has tallied a 1.108 over 23 games at Triple-A Salt Lake, which could make him a player worth watching.
Jun 29 2015Cron will be recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake prior to Monday's game against the Yankees, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.Cron has bounced between Triple-A and the majors this season, hitting for a 1.014 OPS in 93 at-bats for Triple-A Salt Lake while hitting for a .505 OPS in 108 at-bats for the Angels. With left-handed CC Sabathia on the mound for the Yankees on Monday, Cron could crack the starting lineup immediately.
Jun 29 2015Cron will start at first base and bat seventh Monday night, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports.Cron has been mashing the ball in Triple-A, hitting for a .323/.347/.667 line with 18 of his 30 hits going for extra bases. He's been much better against lefties than righties this season in the majors, hitting for .279 against them versus just .154 against right-handers. With southpaw CC Sabathia on the mound for the Yankees, Cron gets the nod over Efren Navarro at first base with Albert Pujols filling the DH role.
Jun 14 2015Cron was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake prior to Sunday's game against the Athletics.Cron once again struggled to earn at-bats during his one-week stay with the Angels, going 2-for-10 at the plate before losing out on playing time to Efren Navarro once again. The Angels called up outfielder Daniel Robertson in a corresponding move.
Jun 6 2015Cron was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake and will get the start at DH on Saturday against the Yankees. He slots into the seven hole Saturday with a righty (Adam Warren) on the mound for the Yankees. In his last 10 games with Salt Lake, the big right-handed slugger hit .333 with two home runs, earning a call back to The Show. He should see several starts per week at DH going forward.
May 25 2015Cron was sent down to Triple-A Salt Lake after Monday's game. The 25-year-old only started three times in the last two weeks and has struggled to a .204/.225/.276 line over 102 at-bats this year, so the Angels will give him a chance to work things out in the minors. Cron showed the ability to hit for both power and average as he rose through the Angels' organization, and if he goes down to Triple-A and hits, he could find himself back with the team later this year. No corresponding move has yet been announced.
May 20 2015Cron will get the start and hit seventh Wednesday. He has hit for relatively no power this year so Cron has begun losing out on playing time, but he will get the start at DH Wednesday. Consider him a part-time option until his bat gets going.
May 9 2015Cron is not in the lineup for Saturday's matchup with Houston.Cron was the designated hitter for Friday's game, but he'll concede the spot to David Freese, who played third base Friday, on Saturday. Taylor Featherston will get the start at third base.
May 7 2015Cron is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Astros, Angels' Director of Communications Eric Kay reports.Matt Joyce will serve as the designated hitter, and Efren Navarro will get his third start of the season in left field. The Angels have been patient thus far, but if Cron doesn't heat up soon, he may start to lose more at-bats to Navarro, Collin Cowgill, or even Carlos Perez.
May 3 2015Cron is out of the lineup Sunday against the Giants, MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez reports.Cron started the first game of the series in a National League park, but will sit in favor of Albert Pujols at first base for the second straight day. Cron should still be available off the bench to pinch hit if needed, however, and will return to his regular role when the Angels head back to their home field to open a three-game series with the Mariners on Monday.
Apr 30 2015Cron is starting at first base and hitting sixth Thursday, the Orange County Register's Jeff Fletcher reports.Albert Pujols (hamstring) might miss the rest of the week, which would allow Cron to presumably start at least a couple games in this weekend's series in San Francisco.
Apr 27 2015Cron went 4-for-4 with a double on Sunday against the Rangers. He has been seeing regular playing time of late, and has responded by going 10-for-21 over his last five starts. For now, Cron seems to be locked into the six-spot in the Angels lineup as he alternates starts at first base and designated hitter. The power numbers are yet to show up this season, but Cron launched 11 home runs in limited playing time last season and should get it going in that department sooner or later, as long as he sees regular at-bats.
Apr 25 2015Cron went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored in a win over the Rangers on Friday. The three-hit night tied a career high. Cron got off to a slow start this season, but could be in the process of turning things around, as he now has five hits (including two doubles) in his last three games.
Apr 22 2015Cron is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Athletics, Angels' Director of Communications Eric Kay reports.Cron had been in the lineup each of the previous four games and had been hitting better, collecting four hits in that span, so it appears to just be a regular day off for the 25-year-old. Matt Joyce will serve as the club's designated hitter, batting sixth in his stead.
Apr 15 2015Cron is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rangers, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.Cron, who is just 2-for-21 (.095) on the season, will get the day off so that Albert Pujols can be used as the designated hitter with the Angels playing an early game Wednesday.
Apr 11 2015Cron is out of the lineup Saturday.Cron is 0-for-10 to start the season, so he will get the day off with right-hander Jeremy Guthrie on the mound for the Royals. Efren Navarro will get the start at DH Saturday, and could slowly start to cut into a bigger share of the at-bats if Cron can't get on track.
Apr 11 2015Cron went 0-for-4 with a strikeout Friday night while batting out of the No. 5 spot against Royals left-hander Jason Vargas. He's opened the year in an 0-for-10 skid with three strikeouts over the three games that he's appeared in. Hitting fifth in a strong Angels lineup offers up plenty of RBI chances, leaving plenty of value for Cron if he can hit enough to solidify something close to regular starts at DH and first base.
Apr 8 2015Cron is not in the lineup Wednesday.Cron happens to be hitting exactly .250 against lefties and righties for his career, so this is just a standard day off, it appears. Efren Navarro gets the start in left field and Matt Joyce will get the start at DH.
Apr 8 2015Cron went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in Tuesday's win over the Mariners.Returning from offseason wrist surgery, Cron will serve as the club's primary designated hitter this season. The 25-year-old has shown no ill effects from the surgery, but has started off the year 0-for-6 through two games and likely needs a strong showing while he's receiving regular at bats to remain the team's DH once Josh Hamilton returns from a shoulder injury.
Mar 11 2015Cron went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer in the Cactus League outing against the Rangers on Tuesday.Cron underwent wrist surgery this offseason, but does not appear to be feeling any ill effects from the procedure, as he has five hits and nine total bases over six games this spring. Cron will likely be given the opportunity to be a full-time starter as the Angels' DH in 2015, which could make him a sneaky late-round pickup for those looking for a cheap source of power.
Feb 19 2015Cron underwent wrist surgery in the offseason but is no longer limited in any way, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports. The wrist presented some issues for Cron in September and he quietly had it repaired over the winter. However, he's reportedly back at full strength, so it doesn't sound like anything that could force Cron out of the Angels' primary DH role to begin the year. Once Josh Hamilton (shoulder) returns, Matt Joyce will likely move to DH, perhaps relegating Cron to a bench role.
Feb 4 2015Cron is expected to open the 2015 season as the Angels' primary designated hitter, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports. With the news that Josh Hamilton would likely miss Opening Day after requiring surgery on his right shoulder, the Angels will have a temporary vacancy in the lineup that Cron looks to be the most equipped to fill. Matt Joyce and Collin Cowgill are expected to serve as platoon mates in left field, while Cron would theoretically occupy the DH spot in the lineup. The 25-year-old Cron, who batted .256 with 11 homers over 242 at-bats with the Angels last season, will likely need a respectable showing in the spring to solidify himself as the team's primary DH.
Sep 18 2014Cron went 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBI in a win over the Mariners on Wednesday.Cron's three-run shot broke the game open in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Angels a 4-0 lead which allowed them to cruise to the AL West title. Cron will likely remain a part-time player for the rest of the season, but his prodigious power potential could make him a nice asset in the playoffs.
Sep 13 2014Cron (wrist) returned Friday against the Astros, going 0-for-3 with a strikeout in the contest.Cron had missed the last few games due to an injured wrist, but should get his share of at-bats as a part-time player down the stretch as long as he is healthy.
Sep 12 2014Cron has been unavailable for the past few days due to a sore wrist, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.Injuries to Cron's elbow and wrist have limited him to just 10 at-bats since being called up from Triple-A Salt Lake on Sept. 2, but the team expects that he will be able to play in some capacity this weekend.
Sep 7 2014Cron went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in a win over the Twins on Sunday.Cron has just eight at-bats since being called up from Triple-A Salt Lake on Sept. 2 due to a sore elbow, but he has made the most of his time at the plate, tallying four hits in that span. He has now started in back-to-back contests, but will likely be a part-time player for the Halos down the stretch.
Sep 5 2014Cron, who has not been in the lineup since being recalled because he was hit on the elbow by a pitch at Triple-A, will be available off the bench Friday, the Orange County Register's Jeff Fletcher reports. The Angels will still only use Cron as a part-time player, but owners worried about his lack of at-bats since joining the team can rest easy now that he's over his minor elbow contusion.
Sep 5 2014Cron entered Friday's game as a pinch hitter and went 0-for-1 with a strikeout against the Twins.Cron had not logged an at-bat since being recalled with September roster expansions. Manager Mike Scioscia said Cron was fully recovered from an elbow injury, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reported before the game. Cron could make a few starts down the stretch with the Angels in line to make the playoffs.
Sep 2 2014Cron was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports. The acquisition of Gordon Beckham delayed Cron's promotion a bit, but the 24-year-old Cron will be up for good following the conclusion of Salt Lake's season Monday. In 62 games with the big club this season, Cron has hit .266/.295/.462 with nine homers and 29 RBI, and he should see ample opportunities off the bench and occasional starts against left-handed pitching.
Aug 22 2014Cron is unlikely to be recalled this weekend due to the acquisition of Gordon Beckham from the White Sox on Thursday, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.Cron was thought to have a good chance of being recalled for the weekend series against the A's, as the Angels will face two lefties in Jon Lester and Scott Kazmir, but Beckham is a right-handed bat that can provide infield depth, so Cron will likely stay at Triple-A Salt Lake until rosters expand in September.
Aug 20 2014Cron is expected to be recalled this weekend with the Angels facing two lefties, the Orange County Register's Jeff Fletcher reports. He has hit .306 in games since being sent back to Triple-A Salt Lake, and upon getting recalled, it's possible the Angels will just keep him with the team for the remainder of the season, with September just a week away. Brennan Boesch and Efren Navarro have been handling the DH duties since Cron was sent down.
Aug 10 2014Cron was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday. With the Angels in need of some fresh relief arms after the bullpen was forced to cover 12.2 innings Saturday night, Cron was sent back to the minors to open up a spot on the active roster. Cron had struggled to earn playing time since receiving the promotion back to the Angels on July 23, losing out to Efren Navarro for duties as the team's primary DH.
Jul 27 2014Cron is out of the lineup Sunday against the Tigers.Cron has made three straight starts as the DH for the Halos, but manger Mike Scioscia elected to use Albert Pujols as his designated hitter Sunday afternoon. While Pujols gets a day off from playing the field, Efren Navarro -- who homered Saturday night -- will get the starting nod at first base. After a relatively strong start to the season, Cron has posted just a .218 July batting average, and could soon find himself at risk for a demotion or decreased playing time.
Jul 23 2014Cron was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports. With Grant Green hitting the DL with a lumbar strain, the 24-year-old Cron will return to the big club just days after being optioned. Cron has hit .269/.297/.480 with nine homers in 53 games with the big club this season, and while he figures to be deployed primarily as a pinch-hitter with most of the team healthy, he could also see starts here and there at first base and at DH.
Jul 19 2014Cron was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Saturday, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.Because the Angels embarked upon a 16-inning endeavor Friday, it's logical for manager Mike Scioscia to ensure the bullpen stays somewhat fresh after tossing 10 innings. Expect Cron to make his presence felt with the Angels in the very near future, but he nonetheless hits the minors boasting a .278/.307/.497 line with nine homers in 169 at-bats during his first taste of big league pitching.
Jul 13 2014Cron is out of the lineup for Sunday's game in Arlington, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.Cron will sit for a second straight day, allowing Chirs Gimenez to start at first base while Albert Pujols serves as the Angels' DH. No injury has been reported, but it's a bit surprising to see Cron out of the lineup with the Angels starting left-handed Tyler Skaggs.
Jul 12 2014Cron is out of the lineup Saturday at Texas, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.Sitting for the third time in 12 July tilts, Cron boasts a .237/.275/.316 line with one homer, five RBI, and six runs in 38 at-bats this month. In his place, Josh Hamilton is manning DH, while Collin Cowgill covers left field.
Jul 8 2014Cron is out of the lineup Tuesday versus the Blue Jays, Eric Kay of the Angels' official site reports.Cron will sit for the first time in eight games, after hitting .231 (6-for-26) with one home run, five RBI, four runs, and two walks versus seven strikeouts during that span. In his stead, Mike Trout will handle designated hitter, while Albert Pujols mans first base.
Jul 6 2014Cron went 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored in a win over the Astros on Saturday.Cron just keeps hitting, as the 24-year-old now has five hits and four RBI in his last 11 at-bats, and is slugging .544 in 47 games this season.
Jul 1 2014Cron is not in the lineup for Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader with the White Sox, according to Angels Director of Communications Eric Kay.The reason for Cron's absence was not provided, but it appears manager Mike Scioscia does not want him to start both ends of Tuesday's twinbill. It seems likely that Cron will return to action for the nightcap, but be sure to check the Angels' Game 2 lineup for confirmation.
Jun 27 2014Cron had a big night Friday, going 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI in a loss to the Royals.Cron has absolutely exploded since having his playing time expanded earlier this month, as the 24-year-old has hit five home runs in his last six games. He now has eight home runs in just 40 games played this season, and has tallied a .905 OPS.
Jun 26 2014Cron is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Twins.Fresh off a multi-hit effort Wednesday, Cron will sit against right-hander Ricky Nolasco as Albert Pujols serves as the designated hitter and Efren Navarro mans first. Cron has started the team's last five games, with three homers over that span, and it seems likely he'll continue to see semi-regular time for the Angels.
Jun 22 2014Cron went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in a win over the Rangers on Saturday.Cron's homer in the eighth inning looked to be the deciding blow in the contest before Shin-Soo Choo hit a solo homer of his own to tie the game in the ninth. With the release of Raul Ibanez before Saturday's contest, it appears Cron will take over regular DH duties for the Halos, which will undoubtedly give his fantasy value a substantial boost.
Jun 22 2014Cron went 1-for-3 with a solo home run off Yu Darvish in a win over the Rangers on Sunday.Playing time seems to agree with Cron, as the 24-year-old has now homered in three consecutive games after being held out of the lineup against right-handed pitchers for the majority of his time in the major leagues. He has tallied a .286/.310/.536 slash line with six home runs in 112 at-bats this season.
Jun 21 2014Cron went 2-for-4 with a home run in a win over the Rangers on Friday. The combination of right-handed pitchers and National League parks has limited Cron's playing time of late, as he made his first start since June 11 on Saturday. The 24-year-old represented himself well, but his start (and home run) came off lefty Joe Saunders, which may indicate Cron will stay in a platoon role for the time being.
Jun 18 2014Cron will be out of the lineup for the fourth straight game Wednesday against the Indians, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.Cron understandably saw just one at-bat over the weekend with no designated hitter available in Atlanta, but his absence from the lineup for the first three games of the series with Cleveland suggests his starting job is far from secure. Raul Ibanez has done little offensively this season to justify further at-bats, but it appears manager Mike Scioscia nonetheless trusts him more than Cron against right-handed starters.
Jun 13 2014Cron isn't expected to get any starts this weekend with there being no DH in Atlanta, the Orange County Register's Jeff Fletcher reports. He has been in a mini-slump lately, and is just 3-for-17 over his last six games, with no home runs. Don't look for him to get back on track this weekend, as he could only see a pinch-hit appearance, if that.
Jun 5 2014Cron is not in the lineup Thursday against the Astros. The Angels will ease Mike Trout (back) into Thursday's lineup after he missed three of the last four games by using him at designated hitter, leaving no spot for Cron. The return of Josh Hamilton had already made at-bats a little more scarce for the Angels, and there's a chance Cron could see fewer out bats in the games to come.
Jun 3 2014Cron is out of the Angels' lineup Tuesday at Houston, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports. In Cron's stead, Albert Pujols will handle first base, while Raul Ibanez slots in at DH. Cron himself has tallied hits in five of his last seven appearances, batting .308 (8-for-26) with one homer, four RBI, and four runs scored.
Jun 2 2014Either Cron or Grant Green could be sent down towards the end of the week, if the Angels decide that they want to keep 12 pitchers on the active roster once Josh Hamilton returns, the Orange County Register speculates. The Angels might go with 11 pitchers at the beginning of the week because of Monday's off-day, but once Matt Shoemaker is needed back in the rotation, the Angels seem more likely to go back with 12 pitchers. Cron and Green would be the roster victims because they have options and because Raul Ibanez was given a vote of confidence from Angels management.
May 31 2014Cron is out of the Angels' lineup Saturday at Oakland, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.Cron has tallied hits in five of his past seven outings, including three in a row, during which he's hit .391 (9-for-23) with one home run, five RBI, five runs, and two free passes versus four strikeouts. In his stead, Mike Trout will handle DH duties, while Albert Pujols covers first base.
May 29 2014Cron went 3-for-5 with a double, a triple and two runs scored in a win over the Mariners on Thursday. The big day Thursday was an important one for Cron, as he performed exceedingly well in a rare start against a right-handed pitcher, notching his first career triple in the process. Cron was serving at first base due to Albert Pujols getting a day to rest, but if he can keep performing against righties, he could find his way into the lineup full time.
May 28 2014Cron is not in the Angels' lineup Wednesday, Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports. There is a push among Angels fans and fantasy owners for Cron to get regular starts at DH, but the Angels will opt for a left-handed heavy lineup against King Felix on Wednesday.
May 27 2014Cron had a big game Tuesday, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, two RBI and two runs scored against the Mariners.Cron has primarily been in the starting lineup against left-handers since he was called up in the beginning of May, and came into the contest hitting a robust .310/.355/.517 in 29 at-bats against southpaws this season. Cron will likely take over the role of DH full time at some point, but needs to improve against righties, as he has tallied just a .693 OPS against them in 2014.
May 14 2014Cron is not in the lineup Wednesday for the second straight day, according to MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez.Cron has been squeezed to the bench on consecutive days with the Phillies playing in National League parks. He should resume playing more frequently moving forward with the Angels beginning a 10-game homestand Thursday.
May 12 2014Cron went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a loss to the Blue Jays on Monday.Cron continued his hot start to his major league career Monday, as he is now slashing .393/.414/.714 with two home runs and six RBI in 28 at-bats.
May 11 2014Cron is not in the lineup Sunday against the Blue Jays, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports.A day after cracking his first career home run, Cron will receive the day off as manager Mike Scioscia looks to get Mike Trout out of the outfield to serve as the DH. With a 1.107 OPS through his first seven major league games, Cron seems to have surpassed Raul Ibanez on the depth chart as the Angels' primary DH.
May 10 2014Cron will start at first base and bat fifth for the Angels on Saturday. While Cron has yet to hit a home run in the major leagues this season, he is hitting .400 -- albeit in only 20 at-bats.
May 10 2014Cron went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in a win over the Blue Jays on Saturday.Cron hit the first home run of his major league career off left-hander J.A. Happ on Saturday, which, according to ESPN, traveled a remarkable 468 feet. The 24-year-old has hit the ground running since his call up earlier this month, and is the owner of a 1.107 OPS in his first 24 at-bats this season.
May 9 2014Cron is not in the starting lineup for the Angels on Friday.Raul Ibanez will DH and Efren Navarro has been recalled to join the lineup and play left field for Friday's game, leaving Cron as the odd-man out against Jays right-hander Dustin McGowan.
May 7 2014Cron had a nice night at the plate Wednesday, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI in a loss to the Yankees.Cron was the only Halos' hitter to escape with a productive evening Wedensday, as he tallied half of the team's hit total, and recorded their only extra-base hits in the contest. The 24-year-old has really looked impressive in his first five games in the majors, as he is 8-for-19 with three doubles over that span.
May 7 2014Cron will bat fifth at DH Wednesday against the Yankees, MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez reports. He only has three at-bats against lefties so far in his limited big-league career, but he'll be in there against southpaw Vidal Nuno on Wednesday.
May 6 2014Cron is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Yankees, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.Cron will take a seat Tuesday for the first time since being called up from Triple-A Salt Lake on Saturday, but could be a candidate to get regular time at DH if Raul Ibanez, who is replacing him in the contest, does not start producing.
May 6 2014Cron was a late add to the Angels' lineup Tuesday, Orange County Register's Jeff Fletcher reports. He will play DH and bat seventh against the Yankees, as Grant Green was a late scratch for an unspecified reason.
May 5 2014Cron will be the designated hitter and bat cleanup Monday against the Yankees, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports.Cron will start his third consecutive game since being called up Saturday. If the 24-year-old can maintain a hot bat while Albert Pujols stays healthy, the result could be a severe loss of playing time for Raul Ibanez, who has an OPS of just .511 this season.
May 3 2014Cron has been called up from Triple-A Salt Lake City, and he's batting fifth in Saturday's lineup against the Rangers, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.Cron owns a .319/.369/.602 line with six home runs in 122 plate appearances for Triple-A Salt Lake this season. He's not an elite prospect, but does rank as one of the more promising players in a relatively barren system. A first baseman by trade, his major league debut will come as a designated hitter.
May 3 2014Cron had quite a major league debut Saturday, going 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI in a win over the Rangers. One of the top prospects in the Angels system coming into the 2014 season, Cron picked up right where he left off with the big club after an impressive spring training, and became only the fourth player in Halos history to have three hits in his debut. Cron, who has long been considered one of the best power prospects in the organization, was slugging .602 in 113 at-bats in Triple-A Salt Lake this season before being called up, and could be inserted into the lineup frequently now that he has arrived in the majors.
Mar 13 2014Cron was sent to minor league camp Thursday.Cron was never expected to break camp with the Angels in 2014, but the young slugger made his presence felt this spring, tallying an OPS of .975 in 16 at-bats. Though he will start the season in the minor leagues, Cron is expected to join the big club at some point in 2014 to add some right-handed power to the lineup.
Mar 10 2014Cron will start at first base in place of Albert Pujols in a spring game Monday.Cron is off to a fast start this spring, tallying four hits, including a home run and five RBI, in his first seven at-bats. Cron isn't expected to begin the year with the big club, but could be called up later this season as a right-handed power bat in the Angels' lineup.
Mar 6 2014Cron hit a pinch-hit three-run homer in the ninth inning to help force a 4-4 tie against the Dodgers on Thursday.Cron displayed the power that has made him such a highly touted prospect Thursday, as he crushed a 3-1 pitch deep to left field. Though Cron is ticketed to start his season in the minors, Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto said in December that he would likely be at the major league level at some point in 2014 to help replace the power lost in the Mark Trumbo trade this offseason.
Dec 10 2013According to Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto, Cron will likely see time at the major league level in 2014, MLB.com reports.Cron took something of a backwards step in 2013, as he hit just 14 home runs in 565 plate appearances at Double-A Arkansas. The former first-round pick still has tremendous power potential, however, and would likely be called upon at some point next season to help replace the production of Mark Trumbo, who was traded to the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.
