Apr 25 2024Anderson (0-1) took the loss Thursday against the Guardians, allowing five runs on three hits and three walks over 1.2 innings. He didn't record a strikeout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After working his way out of trouble in the first inning, Anderson allowed a solo home run to Will Brennan in the second before Jose Ramirez launched a grand slam with two outs in the frame. The 36-year-old Anderson opened the year in Boston's bullpen, though he was thrust back into the rotation with injuries to Brayan Bello (lat), Nick Pivetta (elbow) and Garrett Whitlock (oblique). While Thursday's outing certainly wasn't encouraging, the Red Sox may need Anderson to make at least one more start until other starters are healthy. He's currently slated for a home matchup Wednesday against the Giants.
Apr 9 2024Anderson is under consideration to fill Nick Pivetta's (elbow) slot in the rotation, Julian McWilliams and Alex Speier of The Boston Globe report. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Red Sox placed Pivetta on the 15-day injured list, and the club is hopeful he'll come off the IL when eligible. While he's unavailable, Boston will need a fill-in starter with the currently rostered Anderson and minor-league starter Cooper Criswell under consideration. Anderson has made a pair of long-relief appearances, while Criswell started for Triple-A Worcester on Sunday and would be available to start Saturday, the next time Boston needs a fifth starter.
Apr 7 2024Anderson allowed two runs on four hits and a walk over three innings Sunday, striking out one batter and earning a save over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For the second time this month, Anderson secured a three-inning save in a blowout win. Those have also been his only two appearances so far this season. Anderson has produced a 3.00 ERA with a 4:1 K:BB through six innings. He should continue working in a long-relief role.
Apr 1 2024Anderson picked up the save Monday against the A's, tossing three scoreless innings on one hit and no walks. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson took advantage of the lopsided score, polishing off three scoreless frames with his second-career save. Monday's outing marked the veteran's first with Boston after signing with the team following his release from the Pirates.. Considering the Red Sox have several reliable arms out of the pen -- including closer Kenley Jansen -- Anderson shouldn't be expected to get many high-leverage looks this season.
Mar 23 2024Anderson signed a major-league contract with the Red Sox on Saturday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson was let go by the Pirates earlier Saturday, and it didn't take long for the 36-year-old righty to latch on with another organization. The Red Sox will be without Liam Hendriks (elbow) and Chris Murphy (elbow), and Cotillo notes that adding Anderson brings experience as a multi-inning reliever to go alongside Josh Winckowski.
Feb 17 2024Anderson signed a minor-league contract with the Pirates on Saturday and received an invitation to big-league spring training, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson logged a 5.42 ERA and 1.42 WHIP across 86.1 innings between the Rays and Rockies last season. The 36-year-old right-hander hasn't turned in a season with an ERA below 5.00 since 2019 (4.21), making him an unreliable fantasy option even if he were to make the Pirates' roster out of spring training.
Oct 1 2023Anderson is no longer scheduled to start Sunday against the Twins, Luke Zahlmann of The Denver Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was penciled in to start the final game of the season for Colorado, but lefty reliever Brent Suter will instead open the contest. It's unclear if Anderson suffered some sort of injury or if manager Bud Black simply decided to go in a different direction. The 35-year-old has a 5.42 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 64:33 K:BB over 86.1 innings this year and will be a free agent this offseason.
Sep 27 2023Anderson (1-6) picked up the win in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Dodgers, allowing five hits and two walks over five scoreless innings in a 4-1 victory, He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson made his first appearance of the season May 3 out of the Tampa Bay bullpen, and he joined the Colorado rotation a couple weeks later after being claimed off waivers. It took the 35-year-old righty 17 starts and 86.1 innings to finally secure his first win of the season, and he waited until the final week to do so. Anderson has pitched well since coming off the IL in early September, posting a 3.86 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 20:13 K:BB through 25.2 frames, and his worst outing during the month actually came on the road in San Francisco. He should get a chance to double his win total in the Rockies' finale, a home tilt against the Twins on Oct. 1.
Sep 20 2023Anderson (0-6) took the loss Wednesday as the Rockies fell 3-2 to the Padres, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander has now made 16 starts in 2023, plus two relief appearances, and he's still looking for his first win. Anderson has at least given the Rockies two straight quality starts, and over 20.2 innings since coming off the IL in early September, he's managed a 4.80 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 16:11 K:BB. With Colorado playing seven games in six days during the final week of the season, Anderson could take the mound twice more against the Dodgers and Twins, but both starts would come at Coors Field.
Sep 15 2023Anderson allowed a run on five walks over seven innings in Friday's win over San Francisco. He struck out seven and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson didn't give up a hit during his seven-inning performance but threw just 53 of 101 pitches for strikes. He coughed up a run in the second inning but followed that by retiring 12 consecutive batters. It was his longest start of the year and he tied his season best with seven punchouts. Despite the terrific start, Anderson still owns a 6.00 ERA with a 57:29 K:BB through 75 frames. He's currently projected to take the mound in San Diego next week.
Sep 14 2023Anderson will start Friday's game against the Giants, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson was originally slated to start Thursday but the game was rained out, so he'll ultimately be pushed back one day. He's made two starts since being activated from the injured list and has given up eight earned runs across 7.1 innings while posting a 6:4 K:BB.
Sep 9 2023Anderson (0-5) allowed six runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three over 3.1 innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson's second start back from shoulder inflammation went worse than his four-inning effort against Toronto last weekend. Thairo Estrada got to him for a two-run home run in the first inning and the Giants rallied for four more runs in the fourth. Anderson is now at a 6.49 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 50:24 K:BB through 68 innings between the Rockies and the Rays this year. He should be able to stick in Colorado's rotation if he stays healthy for the rest of the season. The right-hander is projected for a home rematch versus the Giants next week.
Sep 3 2023Anderson did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over four innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson pitched well in his return from a five-week stint on the injured list due to shoulder inflammation. He allowed a solo home run to Vladimir Guerrero in the third, then another to Spencer Horwitz in the fourth but otherwise held the Blue Jays in check during his brief outing. There's no telling if Anderson would have come out for the fifth, but a 59-minute rain delay effectively ended his outing. Anderson's next start is scheduled to take place when the Rockies travel to San Francisco for a weekend series against the Giants.
Sep 2 2023Rockies manager Bud Black said Friday that Anderson (shoulder) could be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Sunday's game versus the Blue Jays at Coors Field, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rockies have an opening in their rotation for the series finale with Toronto with Austin Gomber (back) unavailable to start on five days' rest, and Anderson looks like the top option to fill the void after making his second rehab start with Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday. In that rehab start, Anderson struck out one while allowing no runs on two hits and four walks over three innings. Anderson covered 64 pitches Tuesday, so he should be able to give the Rockies something close to a typical starter's workload if he gets activated for Sunday's game.
Aug 25 2023Anderson (shoulder) allowed three runs over 2.2 innings Thursday in his first rehab start with Triple-A Albuquerque. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson has been sidelined for just over a month with right shoulder inflammation but is ready to get built back up. He should either rejoin the Rockies' rotation or perhaps be used as a long reliever once he's deemed ready.
Aug 9 2023Anderson (shoulder) played catch Monday at a distance of a little over 90 feet, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Monday marked the fourth consecutive day that Anderson was able to play catch, as the right-hander remains in the early phase of his throwing program while he works his way back from an inflamed right shoulder. Anderson could be cleared for a bullpen session later this week or early next week if he continues to respond well to playing catch while gradually extending the distance of his throws.
Jul 28 2023The Rockies placed Anderson on the 15-day injured list Friday with right shoulder inflammation. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson holds a 6.08 ERA and 1.48 WHIP through 60.2 frames this season and will now be on the shelf for at least a couple weeks. Even with the return of Kyle Freeland (shoulder) from the injured list Friday, Colorado only has three healthy starters on its roster, meaning more moves are likely coming.
Jul 23 2023Anderson did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk over six innings against Miami. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson struck out two of the first three batters he faced in a 1-2-3 first inning before giving up four consecutive hits to open the second, leading to one run coming across for Miami. He would allow another two runs in the bottom of the fifth but still managed to get through six innings for only the second time this season. It was a solid performance for the right-hander after hurling five shutout frames in his previous outing, and he'll look to secure his first win with the Rockies next weekend when the team takes on Oakland at home.
Jul 16 2023Anderson allowed three hits and two walks with one strikeout over five scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Yankees on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson was pummeled for an 18.23 ERA over his last four starts before the All-Star break, but he was much better after some time off. The right-hander remains a risky fantasy option given his home park and shaky overall numbers. He's at a 6.26 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 38:19 K:BB through 54.2 innings this season. Anderson is lined up to next take the mound for a road start in Miami.
Jul 5 2023Anderson (0-4) took the loss Wednesday, allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk over four innings against Houston. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson's struggles continued Wednesday as the right-hander allowed three home runs, two of which came off the bat of Yainer Diaz. The right-hander was unable to make it through five innings for the fifth consecutive start, taking his third straight loss over his last three decisions. Anderson has now allowed at least five runs in each of his last four appearances, raising his ERA to 6.89 on the season.
Jun 29 2023Anderson (0-3) allowed six runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six over 3.2 innings to take the loss Thursday versus the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There's just one positive to take from this outing -- Anderson didn't give up a home run. This was the first time he's kept the ball in the yard since May 22. The results are getting downright ugly for the veteran right-hander, as he's covered just 9.1 innings while allowing 22 runs over his last three starts. He's now at a 6.50 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 34:16 K:BB through 45.2 innings between the Rockies and the Rays this season. He's tentatively lined up for a challenging road start in Houston next week.
Jun 24 2023Anderson (0-2) allowed nine runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out one over 2.2 innings to take the loss Saturday versus the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson gave up two runs through the first two innings, but he was responsible for seven of the 13 runs the Angels put up in the third. At one point, he gave up home runs on three straight pitches. After allowing just three runs over 20.2 innings in May, Anderson has unraveled in June. His ERA is now at 5.79 with a 1.45 WHIP and 28:14 K:BB through 42 innings between the Rockies and the Rays this season. With few better healthy options available, Colorado may have to let Anderson work through his slump. It's not going to get any easier if he makes his projected start at home versus the Dodgers next week.
Jun 18 2023Anderson (0-1) took the loss Sunday, allowing seven runs on seven hits and four walks over three innings in a 14-6 loss to Atlanta. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Things quickly went south for Anderson after he was staked to a 5-0 lead. He'd eventually surrender seven runs, six coming on a pair of three-run homers. The veteran right-hander now has a 9.24 ERA over his last three starts (12.2 innings) after pitching to a 1.69 mark through his first 26.2 innings this year. Overall, Anderson's ERA is up to 4.12 with a 1.25 WHIP and 27:12 K:BB through seven starts (39.1 innings) this season. He's currently in line for a home matchup with the Angels in his next outing.
Jun 14 2023Anderson didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 7-6 extra-inning win over the Red Sox, giving up three runs on five hits and a walk over 4.1 innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rockies spotted Anderson an early 4-0 lead by the top of the third inning, but the veteran right-hander quickly gave most of it back and got the hook after 89 pitches (60 strikes). His line could have been a lot worse -- he left the bases loaded when he exited in the fifth, but Colorado's bullpen and defense bailed him out. Anderson has yet to get a decision in six starts since moving into the rotation, but his 3.16 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 23:7 K:BB through 31.1 innings have been surprisingly solid. He lines up to face a tough test in his next outing, which is set to come this weekend in Atlanta.
Jun 8 2023Anderson did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk over 5.1 innings against the Giants. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's the first time through five starts that Anderson has allowed more than two runs, though he did set a season high with seven strikeouts. The veteran right-hander has been solid since he was claimed off waivers from Tampa Bay, pitching to a 2.67 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB. However, a .222 BABIP against compared to an expected batting average of .273 indicates that Anderson is likely due for some regression.
Jun 2 2023Anderson yielded two runs on four hits and a walk over six innings during Friday's win against the Royals. He struck out two and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson was in line for the loss after coughing up a pair of solo home runs but the Rockies' late comeback saved his record. He's allowed two or fewer runs in every outing this season, resulting in a 1.69 ERA through 26.2 frames. In four starts with Colorado, Anderson has compiled a 10:6 K:BB and a 2.08 ERA. He's currently lined up to face the Giants at home next week.
May 27 2023Anderson allowed a run on four hits and a walk while striking out four over five innings in a no-decision versus the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson has seemingly defied Coors Field for three straight starts, allowing just three runs over 15.2 innings since he joined the Rockies. The right-hander was able to limit the damage to a Pete Alonso solo shot in the fourth inning, but the Rockies' bullpen couldn't maintain the lead. Anderson now has a 1.31 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 10:5 K:BB over 20.2 innings overall. He's tentatively projected for a road start versus Arizona next week.
May 22 2023Anderson allowed two runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out one over 5.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Marlins on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson wasn't as dominant as he was in his Rockies debut last week, but he turned in a serviceable start. The Marlins tagged him for a run in each of the third and fourth innings, but the Rockies pulled ahead for good in the sixth. The veteran right-hander now has a 1.15 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 6:4 K:BB over 15.2 innings between the Rockies and the Rays. With the Rockies' rotation still awaiting the returns of several injured pitchers, there's a good chance Anderson will get another start, which lines up to be a home date against the Mets this weekend.
May 16 2023Anderson did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing one hit and one walk over five scoreless innings in a 3-1 loss against Cincinnati. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson stepped straight into the Colorado rotation after being waived by the Rays earlier this week, taking the place of Antonio Senzatela (elbow) and turning in a fantastic outing. He held the Reds to just one hit, which came on a Wil Myers single in the third, while lasting five innings. He was limited to just 59 pitches after coming out of the bullpen with Tampa Bay earlier this season. Though Tuesday's outing was certainly encouraging, managers shouldn't expect this form to continue for Anderson considering he has finished each of the last three seasons with an ERA above 6.00 (105.2 innings). However, he will likely have the opportunity to make a handful of starts considering the Rockies have several starters currently on the injured list.
May 12 2023Anderson is expected to start for the Rockies on Tuesday against the Reds, Suzie Hunter of TheDNVR.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: That would have been Antonio Senzatela's turn, but he was diagnosed Friday with a UCL sprain in his right elbow and is likely to be sidelined for multiple months. Anderson, claimed off waivers Wednesday from the Rays, holds an ugly 6.51 ERA over his last 110.2 major-league innings dating back to the beginning of the 2020 season.
May 10 2023Tampa Bay designated Anderson for assignment Wednesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson is getting booted off the active and 40-man rosters in order to make room for Jake Diekman, who is expected to be activated ahead of Wednesday's game in Baltimore after finalizing a one-year deal with Tampa Bay. In two appearances with the Rays, Anderson fired five scoreless innings and allowed just three baserunners. He'll now hit the waiver wire and could attract interest from a team in search of a multi-inning relief option.
May 3 2023Tampa Bay selected Anderson's contract from Triple-A Durham on Wednesday, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Tampa Bay acquired Anderson from the Reds for cash considerations earlier Wednesday, and though the expectation was that the veteran right-hander would report to Triple-A Durham, he'll instead move to the big club after closer Pete Fairbanks (forearm) was placed on the injured list in a corresponding move. While Anderson is up with the Rays, he'll likely serve as a multi-inning option out of the bullpen.
Mar 7 2023Anderson got promoted Tuesday to the major-league side of Reds camp. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson was re-signed to a minor-league contract just before the start of spring training and has maybe put himself in position to claim an Opening Day roster spot. The veteran right-hander struggled to a 6.38 ERA over seven starts and two relief appearances with Cincinnati last season. If he does make the squad, it will likely be as a long reliever or mop-up man.
Feb 18 2023Anderson returned to the Reds on a minor-league contract Saturday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson made seven starts and two relief appearances for the Reds last season, struggling to a 6.38 ERA. That ERA at least beat the 7.22 and 6.75 marks he'd posted the previous two years. Even on a weak Reds roster, Anderson probably shouldn't break camp with a rotation spot, but when the top competition for the last two jobs consists of Luis Cessa, Justin Dunn, Connor Overton and Luke Weaver, it's not impossible that things could break his way.
Oct 2 2022Anderson (2-4) took the loss Sunday, allowing five runs on two hits and three walks with no strikeouts over one-third of an inning in a 8-1 loss to the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Disaster unfolded to start the game for Anderson. The 34-year-old allowed seven of the first eight batters to reach base, causing manager David Bell to pull him after he surrendered three runs and recorded just one out. Two of Anderson's inherited runners came around to score, leading to a horrific stat line in what was most likely Anderson's last start of the season. Over 23.1 innings in 2022, Anderson has owned a 6.56 ERA with 23 strikeouts compared to 14 walks.
Sep 26 2022Anderson did not factor in the decision against Pittsburgh on Monday, allowing one run on four hits and no walks while striking out five batters over four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson made it through three frames without giving up a run, but a 50-minute rain delay curbed his momentum. He returned after the delay to pitch the fourth and threw another scoreless inning, but he was then pulled after giving up a leadoff single in the fifth. The runner eventually came around to score, and Anderson finished with one run on his ledger for the third straight outing. The veteran has pitched well of late, allowing just five runs over 20.2 innings in September.
Sep 21 2022Anderson (2-3) allowed one earned run on three hits and no walks while striking out four across five innings to earn the win Wednesday against Boston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson held Boston hitless through three innings and was rarely in trouble to earn his second win. Though he took some time ramping up, Anderson has worked five innings in each of his last two starts and has allowed only two total earned runs to go along with a 7:2 K:BB. Despite that recent success, he's not likely to take another turn through the rotation due to the return of Graham Ashcraft (biceps).
Sep 15 2022Anderson (1-3) earned the win over St. Louis on Thursday, allowing one run on one hit and two walks while striking out three batters over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson didn't have great control in the outing -- he threw only 46 of 80 pitches for strikes and walked two batters -- but he surrendered just one hit (a double by Paul Goldschmidt) across a season-high five frames. That double resulted in a run, but that was the only score the Cardinals could manage against the right-hander. Anderson ended up with his first win of the campaign in his fifth outing. With Hunter Greene (shoulder) slated to return from the IL this weekend and Graham Ashcraft (biceps) currently on a rehab assignment, it's not certain that Anderson will remain in the rotation much longer despite the strong showing Thursday.
Sep 10 2022Anderson (0-3) took the loss Saturday, allowing two runs on a hit and three walks while striking out five over four innings versus the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson stretched out to 84 pitches (49 strikes), but he walked multiple batters for the second straight outing. This loss can't be fully pinned on the veteran right-hander -- the Reds mustered just one hit and two walks for the whole game. Anderson has a 9.00 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 11:9 K:BB through nine innings over four appearances with the Reds. With two doubleheaders on the slate next week, expect Anderson to remain in the rotation again, likely for a tough road start in St. Louis.
Sep 4 2022Anderson walked four and struck out four over 2.2 scoreless and hitless innings in a no-decision versus the Rockies in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson finally kept runs off the board, though that was more luck than skill after he walked four batters and threw just 27 of 56 pitches for strikes. The 34-year-old right-hander is still working on getting stretched out amid his struggles at the major-league level -- he's allowed eight runs (seven earned) in five innings across three appearances with the Reds. Assuming he stays on a regular schedule this time through the rotation, he's lined up for a road start in Milwaukee next weekend.
Sep 2 2022Anderson remains on track to start Sunday's game against the Rockies in Cincinnati, despite being used in relief of Wednesday's 5-3 extra-inning loss to the Cardinals, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cincinnati added Anderson to the roster Monday and had him start Monday's series opener with the Cardinals, but he was chased midway through the second inning after allowing five earned runs while recording just five outs. The Reds likely didn't plan on having Anderson work out of the bullpen Wednesday, but with the game going into the 13th inning and the only other available reliever (Joel Kuhnel) having worked both of the previous two days, manager David Bell turned to the veteran right-hander. Anderson ended up surrendering three runs (two earned) to take his second loss in three days, but since he tossed only 36 pitches on Monday and 19 on Wednesday, he shouldn't face any significant workload restrictions when he returns to the mound Sunday.
Aug 29 2022Anderson (0-1) allowed five runs on four hits and a walk over 1.1 innings Monday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a scoreless first inning, St. Louis plated six runs in the second inning, including five against Anderson. He gave up a solo homer to Tyler O'Neill and was removed that same inning after Tommy Edman's two-run double. The veteran righty posted a 4.50 ERA with a 72:29 K:BB through 80 innings with the Rays' and Tigers' Triple-A affiliates this season. As of now, Anderson is slated to face the Rockies at home this weekend.
Aug 28 2022The Reds are listing Anderson as their scheduled starter for Monday's game against the Cardinals, Byron Kerr of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Prior to Monday's contest, the Reds will need to formally select Anderson's contract to add him to the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster, after he joined the organization Saturday on a minor-league deal. He'll be stepping into the rotation spot vacated by T.J. Zeuch (back), who was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday. Between stops with the Tigers' and Rays' Triple-A affiliates this season, Anderson has produced a 4.50 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 72:29 K:BB in 80 innings.
Aug 27 2022Anderson signed a minor-league contract with the Reds on Saturday and is expected to start Monday against the Cardinals, Byron Kerr of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds are dealing with multiple injuries to their starting pitchers and have evidently elected to bring in a 34-year-old from outside the organization rather than call up someone from Triple-A. Anderson hasn't thrown a major-league pitch this season and owns a 6.94 ERA at the highest level since the start of the 2020 campaign. In 80 Triple-A innings this season, he owns a 4.50 ERA.
Jul 26 2022The Rays signed Anderson to a minor-league contract Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson didn't appear in a game for the Tigers this season, but he did post a 4.63 ERA and 62:27 K:BB in 70 innings for Triple-A Toledo. The righty's recent performance doesn't suggest he'll see many opportunities for Tampa Bay, even with their track record of reviving the careers of many a pitcher.
Jul 17 2022Anderson opted out of his minor-league contract with the Tigers on Saturday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson and the Tigers have now parted ways for the second time this season, as the right-hander was previously released from his minor-league deal April 10 and then re-signed two days later. Though Detroit has dealt with a litany of injuries to its pitching staff this season, Anderson was unable to earn a call-up to the majors despite having been a staple in the Triple-A Toledo rotation. Over his 17 outings (15 starts) at Triple-A, Anderson produced a 4.63 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 62:27 K:BB in 70 innings.
Apr 6 2022The Tigers reassigned Anderson to Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After signing a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training, Anderson appeared in three Grapefruit League games, giving up three earned runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out two batters over five innings. The 34-year-old will start the year in Triple-A but due to his big-league experience, he could be one of the first pitchers to get called up if needed. Anderson appeared in 14 games with the Phillies in 2021, nine of which were starts, producing a disappointing 6.75 ERA and 1.48 WHIP while posting a 6.6 K/9, his lowest since 2015.
Apr 3 2022Anderson is one of several pitchers still competing to fill out the back end of Detroit's bullpen to begin the regular season, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Woodbery notes that six pitchers (Anderson, Jacob Barnes, Jason Foley, Rony Garcia, Will Vest and Drew Hutchison) are likely competing for five roster spots. Anderson has largely been a starter during his MLB career, but it appears that he won't be in the rotation to begin the year for the Tigers, so he'll likely need to make the team as a long reliever.
Mar 14 2022Anderson signed a minor-league contract with the Tigers on Monday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson's veteran presence could be a good fit for a young pitching core that includes former first-round pick Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal, who has just one full season of big-league action under his belt. While Anderson won't be a favorite to crack the Opening Day roster, he'll serve as depth in the rotation and could be a candidate to come up later in the season should the injury bug strike. There's no question that Anderson has struggled over his last few seasons, accruing a 7.22 ERA over 33.2 innings during the 2020 campaign and a 6.75 ERA across 48 innings with Philly a season ago, but he was formerly a serviceable starter, posting his best season with Milwaukee in 2017 with a 2.74 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 141.1 frames.
Aug 31 2021Anderson signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Tuesday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson didn't have to wait long to find a new club after getting released by the Phillies on Sunday. He joins a team that's in desperate need of starting pitching, with Dane Dunning, Mike Foltynewicz and Spencer Howard all on the COVID-19 injured list. The Rangers may prefer to give opportunities to younger players rather than a 33-year-old who owns a 6.94 ERA over the last two seasons, however, so there's no guarantee he joins the major-league roster any time soon.
Aug 29 2021Anderson was released by the Phillies on Sunday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson was designated for assignment by the Phillies on Thursday and has now parted ways with the team. The veteran right-hander struggled as both a starter and reliver this season with a 6.75 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 35:20 K:BB across 48 innings (14 appearances).
Aug 26 2021The Phillies designated Anderson for assignment Thursday, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The well-traveled right-hander will cede his spot on the active roster to Zach Eflin (kneecap), who was reinstated from the 10-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Thursday versus the Diamondbacks. Whether working out of the rotation or as a long reliever for Philadelphia, Anderson found little success. Over 48 innings Anderson posted a 6.75 ERA (5.85 FIP) and 1.48 WHIP.
Aug 15 2021The Phillies reinstated Anderson (triceps) from the 10-day injured list Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson spent just over the minimum amount of time on the IL with right triceps tendinitis, but his absence may have been long enough to cost him his spot in the rotation. After Anderson had served as the Phillies' fifth starter prior to going on the shelf, Matt Moore stepped into the rotation in his stead and tossed six no-hit innings in Saturday's 6-1 win over the Reds. Look for Moore to be rewarded with another start during the upcoming week, leaving Anderson to work out of the bullpen for the time being.
Aug 7 2021Anderson was placed on the 10-day injured list with right triceps tendinitis Saturday, retroactive to Aug. 5. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson had a rough outing against the Nationals on Wednesday and allowed three home runs in four innings, and he'll miss at least one turn through the rotation after he was diagnosed with a triceps injury. The Phillies will be able to skip his scheduled start early next week since the team has a day off Monday, but they haven't announced who will take his place in the rotation if he misses more than the minimum of 10 days.
Aug 5 2021Anderson didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 9-5 win over the Nationals, giving up three runs on three hits -- all solo home runs -- and a walk over four innings. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 33-year-old's difficulty keeping the ball in the yard led to an early 3-0 hole for the Phillies, and while Anderson's offense bailed him out, he still exited before he could get credit for a win. With Zach Eflin (knee) potentially close to returning and Ranger Suarez looking good so far as a starter, Anderson's return to the rotation doesn't figure to last long.
Aug 1 2021Anderson is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Nationals, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: At least temporarily, Anderson will join the rotation as a replacement for Vince Velasquez, who was moved to the bullpen Saturday after another rocky start. Anderson is unlikely to represent much of an upgrade from Velasquez, as he's been hit hard this season whether working as a starter or a long reliever. The 33-year-old right-hander has submitted a 6.75 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 7.0 K/9 across 44 innings with Philadelphia.
Jul 25 2021The Phillies reinstated Anderson from the COVID-19-related injured list Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson was placed on the COVID-19-related IL for the second time this season June 10, but he's been healthy for quite some time, as he's made five rehab appearances at Lehigh Valley over the past three weeks. Though he was stretched out for starting duty during his time in the minors, Anderson is expected to fill a long-relief role in his return to Philadelphia.
Jun 10 2021Anderson returned to the COVID-19 injured list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In a confusing turn of events, Anderson landed on the COVID-19 injured list Sunday before being removed Tuesday, only to head back to the list two days later. The short nature of his original stay suggests he was merely exposed to someone with the virus and didn't test positive himself, but it's possible he's since done so. Catcher Rafael Marchan was recalled in a corresponding move.
Jun 8 2021The Phillies reinstated Anderson (COVID-19) from the COVID-19 restricted list Tuesday, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson appears to have avoided a bout with the virus, as he returns just two days after landing on the COVID-19 list. The righty is back with the Phillies for now, but he may not continue receiving opportunities if he can't improve upon his alarming 7.34 ERA.
Jun 6 2021The Phillies placed Anderson on the COVID-19-related injured list prior to Sunday's game against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Reliever David Hale was also added to the COVID IL, but the Phillies didn't specify whether the two pitchers were moved to the list due to testing positive for the virus. Since being bounced from the rotation after giving up seven runs in 1.1 innings in a May 16 loss to the Blue Jays, Anderson hasn't fared much better in a low-leverage relief role. In his first three outings out of the bullpen, Anderson has surrendered six earned runs on eight hits and a walk over 5.2 innings.
May 21 2021Anderson will move to the bullpen, with Spencer Howard set to start in his place Saturday against the Red Sox, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson won an Opening Day rotation spot but did very little to keep it, struggling to a 6.96 ERA and 1.61 WHIP through eight starts. Those numbers look worryingly similar to his 7.22 ERA and 1.63 WHIP from 2020. He'll make way for the Phillies' top pitching prospect for now, but it's possible he's needed in the rotation again soon, as Vince Velasquez's status remains uncertain after getting scratched from his Thursday start due to a numb finger.
May 16 2021Anderson (2-4) allowed seven runs on eight hits and a walk in 1.1 innings to take the loss against the Blue Jays on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson's outing Sunday got off a rough start as he gave up home runs to Marcus Semien and Bo Bichette to lead off the game. He didn't fare much better in the second inning, as he allowed six consecutive batters to reach base before he was removed from the game. Anderson now has a 6.96 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in 32.1 innings across eight starts in 2021. He could line up to make his next start at home against the Red Sox on Saturday.
May 11 2021Anderson (2-3) picked up the win in Tuesday's 6-2 victory over the Nationals, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk over five-plus innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander lasted the bare minimum to qualify for the win, but he seemed to be in control while blanking Washington for five innings. After serving up a solo shot to Trea Turner and then walking Juan Soto to lead off the sixth, however, he got a quick hook. Anderson tossed 52 of 85 pitches for strikes, and he'll carry a 5.23 ERA and 26:15 K:BB through 31 innings into his next outing.
May 5 2021Anderson didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Brewers, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks over 4.1 innings while striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander got handed a 5-0 lead in the first inning, but Anderson couldn't last long enough to collect the resulting win as he needed 92 pitches (49 strikes) to record 13 outs. He has yet to pitching more than five innings in any start this season, and Anderson will take a 5.54 ERA and 21:14 K:BB through 26 innings into his next outing.
Apr 30 2021Anderson (1-3) earned the win Friday versus the Mets, allowing one run on five hits and two walks with six strikeouts in five-plus innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson gave up a leadoff single to Pete Alonso in the sixth inning, and reliever JoJo Romero allowed him to score. The 33-year-old Anderson was at the plate for the Phillies' two runs Friday. The right-hander struck out but reached on a passed ball, and both Brad Miller and Andrew Knapp were able to dart home to score on the play. Anderson has an unimpressive 5.40 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 19:10 k:BB across 21.2 innings in five outings. He projects to face the Brewers next week.
Apr 26 2021Anderson (0-3) allowed six runs on six hits and three walks while striking out just two over 3.2 innings in a defeat to the Rockies on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson was cruising along through the first three innings but completely fell apart in the fourth. He ended up loading the bases with a walk and proceeded to allow back-to-back RBI singles before walking another batter to keep all the bases occupied. Phillies' manager Joe Girardi decided he had seen enough and brought in David Hale to try and finish the inning. He ended up watching Trevor Story trot around the bases after crushing a hanging curveball over the wall in left for a grand slam. Anderson ended up being charged six runs in the inning and now owns a 6.48 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP over 16.2 innings. He'll be in search of his first win this season when he takes the bump against the Mets on Friday.
Apr 20 2021Anderson (0-2) took the loss Monday in Monday's 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Giants, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks over four innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander exited after throwing 70 pitches (47 strikes), but there was only one offering Anderson would like to have back -- a third-inning curveball he left over the plate that Brandon Belt deposited in the seats in right field for the game's only offense. Anderson has a 4.15 ERA and 11:5 K:BB through 13 innings, but he'll be a very risky fantasy option in his next outing, slated for Sunday against the Rockies in Coors Field.
Apr 13 2021Anderson didn't factor into the decision in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Mets, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks over four innings, He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Dominic Smith tagged him for a two-run homer in the first inning, but Anderson was able to avoid any further damage despite steady traffic on the bases. The right-hander tossed 44 of 74 pitches for strikes, and he'll take a 4.00 ERA and mediocre 6:5 K:BB through nine innings into his next outing, set for Monday at home against the Giants.
Apr 12 2021Anderson won't start against the Mets on Monday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Monday's game will be made up as a doubleheader Tuesday, so Anderson could be in line to start one of the two games in the twin bill. The right-hander took the loss in his season debut against the Mets, giving up two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out three in five innings.
Apr 6 2021Anderson (0-1) took the loss Tuesday, giving up two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out three over five innings as the Phillies fell 8-4 to the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander didn't pitch badly while throwing 49 of 80 pitches for strikes and only made one real mistake, which Dominic Smith deposited in the seats for a two-run shot, but the Phillies weren't able to level the score and take him off the hook for the loss after initially falling behind in the fourth inning. Anderson lines up for a road rematch with the Mets in his next outing set for Monday.
Mar 31 2021Manager Joe Girardi said Anderson will start the Phillies' fifth game of the season April 6 against the Mets, Pat Gallen of CBS 3 Philadelphia reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson and fellow Phillies newcomer Matt Moore were able to secure the final two spots in the rotation over Vince Velasquez, who will begin the season in the bullpen. The 33-year-old posted a career-best 10.7 K/9 for the Blue Jays in 2020, but he was hit hard when he wasn't making bats miss, giving up 45 hits -- including 11 home runs -- in 33.2 innings. While he held batters to a .157 average this spring, Anderson still served up two home runs in 14.2 innings. He looks like a less-than-ideal streaming option against a Mets squad that boasts one of baseball's more potent lineups from top to bottom.
Feb 3 2021Anderson signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the Phillies on Wednesday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson's $9.5 million contract option was declined by the Blue Jays in late October, but he's now agreed to terms with Philadelphia ahead of the 2021 campaign. The righty posted a career-worst 7.22 ERA and 1.63 WHIP over 33.2 innings with the Blue Jays in 2020 and will attempt to return to form in 2021 after recording a 3.83 ERA over four seasons with Milwaukee. He should be one of several pitchers competing for a back-end rotation spot with the Phillies during spring training.
Oct 30 2020Anderson had his $9.5 million club option for 2021 declined by the Blue Jays on Friday, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander struggled in 2020 with a 7.22 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 38:10 K:BB over 33.2 innings after beginning the season with an injury, so it's not much of a surprise Toronto opted to pay the $500,000 buyout. Anderson had a 3.63 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 82 starts over the previous three seasons with the Brewers before being traded, so he should at least earn a look from someone for spring training.
Sep 27 2020Anderson (1-2) picked up the win in Saturday's 5-2 victory over the Orioles, giving up one hit over two scoreless innings of relief. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Entering the game in the sixth inning after T.J. Zeuch had blanked the O's for five frames, Anderson kept the shutout going and was rewarded for his efforts when Cavan Biggio gave the Jays the lead with a solo shot. While he was able to end the regular season on a high note, Anderson had a rough first campaign with Toronto, posting a 7.22 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 38:10 K:BB over 33.2 innings.
Sep 22 2020Anderson will be available out of the bullpen Tuesday and won't start Wednesday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson has struggled mightily in each of his last three starts, and he'll be moved to a bullpen role, presumably for the remainder of the regular season and for the postseason. Robbie Ray will start in his place Wednesday with Hyun-Jin Ryu taking the mound Thursday.
Sep 18 2020Anderson (0-2) took the loss Thursday as the Blue Jays fell 10-7 to the Yankees, coughing up seven runs on eight hits -- including an incredible five home runs -- and a walk over 2.2 innings of relief. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Entering the game after opener Julian Merryweather allowed two runs in the first inning, Anderson tossed a couple of clean frames before a disastrous fourth in which the Yankees posted their first five-homer inning in franchise history, en route to becoming the first team in MLB history to slug six or more homers in three straight games. Anderson's next outing is also scheduled to come against the Yankees back in Buffalo on Tuesday, but his 7.45 ERA and 1.72 WHIP through 29 innings this season don't inspire much confidence that he's ready for a rematch.
Sep 17 2020Anderson will work behind an opener Thursday against the Yankees, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander was slated to make a traditional start Thursday, but Julian Merryweather has now been tabbed as the opener. Anderson has started in all seven of his outings this season and has a 5.81 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 25:8 K:BB over 26.1 innings.
Sep 12 2020Anderson (0-1) allowed four runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four over 2.2 innings as he was charged with the loss Friday against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson has struggled mightily in his last two starts, and he picked up his first decision of the season in Friday's 18-1 loss. The right-hander hasn't lasted longer than five innings in any of his seven starts in 2020 as he carries a 5.81 ERA and 1.56 WHIP through 26.1 innings. He'll attempt to right the ship on the road Thursday against the Yankees.
Sep 5 2020Anderson gave up six runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out three over four innings versus the Red Sox on Saturday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Four of the six runs charged to Anderson came on three homers in the second inning. He also allowed a two-run double to Rafael Devers in the fourth. Anderson has yet to record a result is six starts this year, but Saturday was by far his worst performance. The right-hander now has a 4.94 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 21 strikeouts across 23.2 innings. He'll try to keep the ball in the yard Friday versus the Mets.
Aug 31 2020Anderson allowed a run on three hits while fanning eight across five innings pitched in Monday's 4-3 loss to the Orioles. He did not factor in the decision and did not issue a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Jays were careful with Anderson once again, pulling him after five innings and 84 pitches despite the right-hander appearing to be in full control. The 32-year-old's eight strike outs shattered his previous season-high of three. He was in line to pick up his first win after Toronto took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth, but had to settle for his fifth consecutive no-decision after the Orioles tied the game in the sixth. Nonetheless, it was Anderson's best start of the season and he will look to keep his momentum going Sunday in Boston.
Aug 26 2020Anderson didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 9-7 loss to the Red Sox, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk over five-plus innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Staked to a 4-0 lead after the first inning, Anderson was reasonably effective through five frames, but after he walked the leadoff batter in the sixth manager Charlie Montoyo gave him the hook, and Anderson could only watch as the bullpen melted down for six runs. The right-hander did throw a season-high 83 pitches (55 strikes) and completed five innings for the first time, but with the Jays being extra-cautious right now with their remaining healthy starters, that might be about Anderson's limit. He'll take a 3.68 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 10:4 K:BB through 14.2 innings into his next outing Sunday, at home against the Orioles.
Aug 20 2020Anderson allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk across 3.2 innings pitched in the 3-2 win over the Phillies in Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Thursday marked yet another short start for Anderson as he continues to build up arm strength after missing the beginning of the season with an oblique strain. After tossing 45 and 59 pitches respectively in his first two outings, the 32-year-old upped his pitch count to 78 (44 strikes) while working into the fourth inning for the first time Thursday. Anderson will look to work deeper into the game and pick up his first win when he takes the ball Tuesday against Boston.
Aug 15 2020Anderson hurled three innings against Tampa Bay on Saturday, allowing one run on five hits while striking out three. The game was suspended due to rain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After throwing 45 pitches in his season debut, Anderson hurled 59 on Saturday, 39 of which were strikes. He yielded only one extra-base hit in his three frames -- a solo home run to Austin Meadows in the third inning. Whether the right-hander will suffer a loss due to his lone mistake will be determined Sunday when the suspended game is completed. Anderson is expected to next take the mound Thursday at home against Philadelphia.
Aug 8 2020Anderson (oblique) allowed one run on a hit and two walks while striking out one in three innings versus the Red Sox on Saturday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson missed a couple of weeks with an oblique strain, but he pitched fairly well in a short debut. His only run came on a Christian Vazquez single. Anderson threw 26 of his 45 pitches for strikes. The 32-year-old pitched to a 4.21 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with 124 strikeouts in 139 innings last season with the Brewers. Anderson may still need a few weeks to get to a starter's workload. His next appearance is scheduled for next Saturday versus the Rays.
Aug 7 2020Anderson (oblique) is expected to start Saturday against Boston, Gregor Chisholm of the Toronto Star reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson's preseason buildup was delayed by an oblique strain. He's still not ready to handle a true starters' workload, but he's expected to throw up to three innings Saturday before handing the ball to a long reliever.
Aug 2 2020Blue Jays pitching coach Pete Walker said Sunday that Anderson (oblique) will be activated from the 10-day injured list this week, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Beyond confirming Matt Shoemaker as the starter for Tuesday's game against the Braves, the Blue Jays haven't outlined their rotation plans for the rest of the week, so Anderson could conceivably start either of the final two games of the series in Atlanta. The right-hander threw a live batting practice session Sunday, which likely marks the final hurdle he'll need to clear in his recovery from the right oblique strain he sustained in the second week of July.
Jul 30 2020Anderson (oblique) was able to throw three innings in a simulated game Wednesday, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Per manager Charlie Montoyo, Anderson "looked really good." The workload suggests the right-hander could be close to coming off the injured list, but with Nate Pearson now having made his debut, it's unclear whether there will be room for Anderson in the rotation once he's healthy.
Jul 27 2020Anderson (oblique) will throw a simulated game Wednesday, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson has been dealing with an oblique strain since early in camp but has been able to throw for nearly two weeks. It's not clear exactly how many pitches he's expected to throw Wednesday or how close he is to his return.
Jul 23 2020The Blue Jays placed Anderson (oblique) on the 10-day injured list Thursday, Scott Mitchell of TSN.ca reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anthony Kay earned a spot on the Blue Jays' 30-man Opening Day rotation and is expected to step into the rotation as a replacement for Anderson, who has since resumed throwing off a mound after straining his right oblique just under two weeks ago. Anderson will probably need more than a week to ramp up to a starter's workload, so the Blue Jays will likely need to fill his turn in the rotation at least two times.
Jul 22 2020Anderson (oblique) completed a successful bullpen session Wednesday, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's the first time the 32-year-old has thrown off a mound since suffering the oblique injury 10 days ago, so it's a significant step in his recovery. Anderson is beginning the season on the injured list, but manager Charlie Montoyo doesn't expect him to be sidelined for long. Anthony Kay, Ryan Borucki and Nate Pearson are in the mix to round out the starting rotation while Anderson remains on the shelf.
Jul 20 2020Anderson (oblique) threw from 120 feet Monday and will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson will be opening the season on the injured list due to an oblique strain he's dealt with throughout summer camp, but the fact that he's nearly ready to throw a bullpen session is certainly a good sign. Starts are available for the Blue Jays until he returns, with Ryan Borucki, Anthony Kay and Nate Pearson lining up as the primary candidates.
Jul 19 2020Manager Charlie Montoyo announced Sunday that Anderson (oblique) will begin the season on the injured list, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The team indicated shortly after the right-hander suffered the oblique strain last week that he was unlikely to be ready for the start of the season, so it's not a surprise he's heading to the IL. Anderson continues to throw long toss and is progressing toward mound work, per Scott Mitchell of TSN.ca, but he has no official timeline for his return. Trent Thornton receives some stability in the rotation thanks to the news, while Ryan Borucki, Anthony Kay and Nate Pearson are in the mix for the No. 5 spot.
Jul 14 2020Anderson (oblique) was throwing off flat ground from 90 feet Tuesday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Blue Jays announced over the weekend that the veteran right-hander had been dealing with the oblique strain for several days, so it's encouraging to see him back to throwing relatively quickly. Pitching coach Pete Walker already said Anderson is unlikely to be available for the start of the season next week, but a return to the mound soon could go a long way toward minimizing his absence during the shortened season.
Jul 13 2020Pitching coach Pete Walker said Monday that Anderson (oblique) is unlikely to be ready for the start of the regular season, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson has been day-to-day while dealing with an oblique strain over the past several days, but he likely won't be able to return by July 24, when the Blue Jays are scheduled to open the season. How much of the regular season Anderson misses remains to be seen. The Blue Jays haven't named a replacement for Anderson's spot in the rotation, but Trent Thornton, Nate Pearson, Shun Yamaguchi and others are in the running for the team's final two rotation spots.
Jul 12 2020Manager Charlie Montoyo said Sunday that Anderson is considered day-to-day with an oblique strain, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montoyo revealed Sunday that Anderson has been dealing with the injury for several days and that the team is taking it day-by-day. Whether the issue impacts the right-hander's availability for Opening Day remains to be seen, but he could require several weeks to build up strength before he's ready for live games. Montoyo declined to name a specific replacement for Anderson in the rotation if he's not ready by the start of the regular season.
Mar 12 2020Anderson gave up one run on three hits and a walk over 3.2 innings while striking out four in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: On a day when the two teams combined for eight homers, Anderson was able to limit the damage off him to a single solo shot. The right-hander has had a bumpy first spring with the Jays, posting an 11.57 ERA and 6:7 K:BB through 9.1 innings, but he's still expected to hold down a spot in the middle of the rotation.
Mar 2 2020Anderson has given up five runs with a 1:4 K:BB through 2.2 innings over his first two spring starts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Picked up from the Brewers in the offseason to bolster the team's pitching depth, Anderson is being counted on to break camp in the middle of the Jays' rotation and at least give the club consistent, serviceable innings. Rough performances early in the spring are often long forgotten by Opening Day, but if Anderson continues to struggle over the next couple of weeks, it could put Toronto in a tough position with regard to its rotation plans.
Nov 4 2019Anderson's club option was picked up by the Blue Jays on Monday, Robert Murray of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Blue Jays acquired Anderson from the Brewers in exchange for Chad Spanberger earlier in the day. Milwaukee was likely going to decline the righty's $8.5 million option, but Toronto clearly acquired him with the intention of keeping him around.
Sep 26 2019Anderson (8-4) allowed one run on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts across five innings while earning a victory against the Reds on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Like most of the Brewers, Anderson is red hot, having allowed just two runs in his last 15 innings (1.20 ERA). In September, he's 2-0 with a 1.96 ERA. Unless he makes an appearance in relief over the weekend, Anderson finishes the regular season 8-4 with a 4.21 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 124 strikeouts in 139 innings this season.
Sep 21 2019Anderson (7-4) picked up the win in Friday's 10-1 rout of the Pirates, giving up three hits and a walk over six scoreless innings while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After lasting only four innings in each of his last four outings, Anderson delivered his third quality start of the year at a crucial time for the Brewers, who now sit two games ahead of the Cubs for the second wild-card spot in the NL. The right-hander will take the bump one more time in the regular season, carrying a 4.30 ERA and 122:48 K:BB through 134 innings into a road start against the Reds on Thursday.
Sep 15 2019Anderson gave up one run on one hit and two walks while striking out six through four innings in a no-decision against the Cardinals on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Anderson only allowed a solo home run, but he was pulled after 64 pitches before he could make it through the order for a third time. Anderson continued his string of short outings, as he has not pitched five innings in any of his last four starts. The 31-year-old has a 6-4 record with a 4.50 ERA and 118 strikeouts through 25 starts this season. Anderson is scheduled to make his next start Friday against the Pirates at Miller Park.
Sep 10 2019Anderson allowed two runs on three hits and two walks over four innings during Tuesday's game at Miami. He struck out two and did not qualify for the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 31-year-old received a quick hook as he was pulled for a pinch hitter in the top of the fifth inning while leading 3-2, costing him a chance at the win. Anderson labored during his final inning and had trouble putting away hitters throughout the outing, as the Marlins worked multiple 10-plus-pitch at-bats. The right-hander has a 4.57 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 112:45 K:BB through 124 innings and lines up to pitch Sunday at St. Louis.
Sep 5 2019Anderson did not factor into the decision during Thursday's loss to the Cubs, allowing two runs on five hits and a pair of walks while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander threw just 59 pitches but gave up a solo home run to Wilson Contreras in the fourth inning, tying the game up, 2-2. The long ball was nothing new for Anderson, who has allowed 21 this season while battling through some consistency issues. The 31-year-old will take a 4.58 ERA and 1.31 WHIP into a more favorable matchup at Miami on Wednesday.

Jul 21 2018Anderson didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 4-2 win over the Dodgers, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over four-plus innings while striking out six.The Dodgers' hitters made Anderson work, and the right-hander needed 104 pitches (68 strikes) to record only 12 outs before exiting with the bases loaded and nobody out in the fifth inning, and the Brewers down 2-1. Corbin Burnes was able to put out the fire to keep Anderson's line on the night from looking even worse, and Milwaukee's bats eventually got him off the hook for the loss. He'll carry a 3.81 ERA into his next outing Thursday in San Francisco.
Jul 14 2018Anderson fell to 6-7 on the year after giving up a pair of runs on six hits and two walks Saturday against the Pirates. He struck out four batters in 5.1 innings.Anderson's first inning cost him the game, as he gave up back-to-back solo homers to Starling Marte and Gregory Polanco. He was never in much trouble after that, only once allowing a runner to reach third base, but the Brewers could only manage a single run in the game, saddling Anderson with the loss. The 30-year-old righty's ERA now sits at a solid 3.78, but his underlying numbers give some cause for concern. He's relied on a low .227 BABIP and a high 80.9 percent strand rate, both of which are likely to regress. He'll likely next take the mound Friday against the Dodgers.
Jul 9 2018Anderson allowed one run (zero earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out four across 4.2 innings as he didn't factor into the decision Monday against Miami.Anderson failed to work past the fifth inning, as he was pulled after throwing 96 pitches. Despite not allowing an earned run, he left the game in a 1-1 tie with runners on first and second, although Jeremy Jeffress managed to work out of danger. Over Anderson's past four outings, he's surrendered just three runs over 22 innings with 23 strikeouts.
Jul 4 2018Anderson got a quality start but did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Twins. He lasted 6.1 innings, allowing just one run on three hits and a walk while striking out five.It was generally smooth sailing for Anderson, who faced the minimum through three innings and allowed just three baserunners through six. He left with one out in the seventh but did not get the win after Jeremy Jeffress allowed his inherited runner to score. The start drops Anderson's ERA down to 3.99 on the season, and he's allowed just a single run in each of his last three starts. He'll look to keep the momentum going Monday against the Marlins.
Jun 29 2018Anderson (6-6) allowed one run on two hits and a walk with five strikeouts through six innings to pick up the win Friday against the Reds.Anderson's one real mistakes was a solo home run by, of all people, long reliever Michael Lorenzen, who is now an absurd 3-for-5 with two home runs at the plate in 2018. Other than that, Anderson was dominant. His fastball topped out at 95.4 mph and induced eight whiffs and five outs in play on 36 offerings. This was Anderson's first quality start since June 12 against the Cubs and just his second since May 21 against Arizona. That inconsistency is why he'll take a 4.18 ERA into his next outing Wednesday against the Twins.
Jun 23 2018Anderson allowed one earned run on two hits and four walks while striking out nine across five innings Saturday against the Cardinals. He did not factor into the decision.Anderson was effective, allowing only a solo home run to Yadier Molina, in spite of his poor control. However, his lack of command did shorten his start due to prolonged at-bats -- he reached a three-ball count with eight of the 21 batters he faced. He has dealt with inflated walk and home run rates throughout the season, resulting in a 4.37 ERA.
Jun 17 2018Anderson (5-6) allowed six earned run in 5.1 innings Sunday, yielding five hits and two walks. He also gave up two home runs and struck out five in Sunday's 10-9 loss to the Phillies. Both Rhys Hoskins and Maikel Franco tagged Anderson with a two-run homer in the first and fourth innings, respectively. Anderson's season ERA has swelled up to 4.54 in 77.1 innings with an unsightly 54:30 K:BB. The 30-year-old righty will look to get back in the win column Friday against St. Louis.
Jun 13 2018Anderson (5-5) threw seven scoreless innings and struck out six in a win over the Cubs on Tuesday, allowing one hit and two walks.Anderson gathered his sixth quality start of the season and threw his second scoreless outing (the other coming on Opening Day against the Padres). Anderson's 4.13 ERA is still a bit high, but he's otherwise sporting a nice 1.17 WHIP while holding opponents to a .217 batting average. The right-hander will next take on the Phillies in a start at home.
Jun 6 2018Anderson (4-5) took the loss Wednesday against the Indians, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks across 4.1 innings. He struck out four.It was another short outing for Anderson, who has now lasted six innings just once in his past six starts. He actually pitched pretty well through four innings Wednesday before running into trouble in the fifth frame, loading up the bases with one out before getting the hook. Jeremy Jeffress allowed all three inherited runners to score, raising Anderson's ERA to a lackluster 4.57 through 65 innings this season. He also owns an unimpressive 43:26 K:BB on the year. The 30-year-old will look to right the ship in his next start, which will come at home against the Cubs.
Jun 1 2018Anderson (4-4) took the loss Friday as the Brewers fell 8-3 to the White Sox, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and a walk over 5.2 innings while striking out one.It was another shorter stint for the right-hander, who's failed to complete at least six innings in five of his last seven starts. Anderson continues to pitch to contact, managing only three swinging strikes among 82 pitches Friday, and he'll carry a 4.45 ERA and unimpressive 39:23 K:BB through 60.2 innings into his next outing Wednesday in Cleveland.
May 26 2018Anderson allowed five earned runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five across 3.2 innings Saturday against the Mets. He did not factor in the decision.Anderson continued his season-long troubles with walks and home runs, allowing multiple of each in his start Saturday. The trouble began immediately as he walked two batters in the first inning, leading to three runs. The Mets then added two solo home runs in the second and third innings before chasing him in the fourth inning. After the game, Anderson said that he has been struggling with his mechanics but was confident he would get them figured out, according to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. While there is no guarantee Anderson can fix the issue, there is at least some explanation to his large increase in walk and home run rate as compared to last season.
May 26 2018Anderson (4-3) allowed five earned runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five across 3.2 innings to take the loss Saturday against the Mets.Anderson continued his season-long troubles with walks and home runs, allowing multiple of each in his start Saturday. The trouble began immediately as he walked two batters in the first inning, leading to three runs. The Mets then added two solo home runs in the second and third innings before chasing him in the fourth inning. Anderson has now allowed multiple home runs in four of his 10 starts and has a walk rate of 3.6 BB/9. Both marks are well off of last season's pace, as he allowed just three multi-home run games in 25 starts and surrendered just 2.61 BB/9.
May 21 2018Anderson (4-3) allowed two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out three as he picked up the win Monday in a 4-2 victory over the Diamondbacks.Anderson looked a bit rusty in the first inning after loading the bases on a single, a walk and a hit batsman, but he managed to work his way out of trouble, allowing Arizona to plate just one run. Upon returning from a short stint on the disabled list, the 30-year-old will attempt to remain healthy moving forward. Anderson has accrued a 3.86 ERA and 1.13 WHIP with 33 strikeouts across 51.1 innings.
May 21 2018Anderson (illness) was activated from the disabled list in order to start Monday's game against the Diamondbacks.Anderson was sidelined just over two weeks by a stomach ailment, but he is ready to rejoin the Brewers' rotation, and will do so right way Monday night. Anderson was tagged for nine earned runs in 10.2 innings over his last two starts, but he should enjoy seeing his old team, given the 1.88 ERA he has posted against the Diamondbacks over four career starts.
May 21 2018The Brewers intend to activate Anderson (illness) from the 10-day disabled list and have him start Monday's game against the Diamondbacks, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.Anderson will rejoin the Brewers in the minimum amount of time after a bout with food poisoning resulted in his surprise placement on the 10-day disabled list shortly before his scheduled start May 12. Brent Suter ended up making a spot start on short notice that day, while Freddy Peralta and Brandon Woodruff were also summoned from Triple-A Colorado Springs to fill out the rotation for two starts apiece to compensate for the absences of Wade Miley (oblique) and Zach Davies (shoulder). With Anderson set to pitch Monday and Davies potentially returning from the DL as soon as Thursday, two of Suter, Peralta and Woodruff would likely be squeezed out of the rotation as a result.
May 16 2018Anderson (illness) is expected to be ready to go Monday, the first day that he's eligible to come off the disabled list, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Anderson was scratched from his start Saturday against the Rockies due to food poisoning. He has been feeling better over the last few days, so the team expects him to have little trouble being ready to go Monday against the Diamondbacks.
May 14 2018Anderson (illness) believes he was suffering from food poisoning and is nearing a full recovery, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports Monday.Anderson was placed on the disabled list and won't be eligible to return until May 21. Considering the Brewers will be working with a four-man rotation until his return, expect Anderson to return as soon as he is eligible. Barring a setback, Anderson will have a two-start week on his hand when he returns, with a start May 21 against the Diamondbacks followed by a May 26 outing against the Mets, both coming at Miller Park.
May 12 2018Anderson was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday against the Rockies due to illness.Brent Suter will start in his place. Suter was originally scheduled to start Sunday, so if Anderson is healthy then, he could see his start pushed back just a day, though there hasn't yet been any indication of how long the team expects him to be out.
May 12 2018Anderson (illness) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Saturday.Anderson was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday due to an illness, and while he was originally hoping to take his turn Sunday, it turns out the ailment is serious enough to warrant a stay on the disabled list. It's unclear how long the illness will keep Anderson sidelined, but he'll be eligible to return from the disabled list next Saturday should he be ready. In the meantime, the Brewers are expected to summon prospect Freddy Peralta to start Sunday's series finale against the Rockies in Anderson's place.
May 12 2018General manager David Stearns said Anderson (illness) could be placed on the 10-day disabled list if he's unable to pitch Sunday, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. "If Chase is not going to be able to pitch tomorrow, then his illness is probably going to last some time," Stearns said.Anderson was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday due to an illness. While he's hoping he'll be able to pitch Sunday, it sounds like a trip to the DL is likely if the illness ultimately prevents him from taking the mound. If Anderson is unable to pitch, Alec Asher or Freddy Peralta could step in to start Sunday.
May 12 2018Anderson missed Saturday's start due to illness but hopes to be able to pitch Sunday, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinelreports.Anderson said he didn't sleep much prior to Saturday's game while battling either a stomach bug or food poisoning. He could pitch Sunday, though the odds are slightly lower than they could have been because it will be an afternoon game. Alec Asher could make a spot start if Anderson is unable to return.
May 6 2018Anderson (3-3) allowed five earned runs on five hits while walking two and striking out three across 5.1 innings to take the loss Sunday against the Pirates.Anderson didn't allow a lot of baserunners, but four of the five hits he allowed went for extra bases -- including two solo home runs. He has struggled with the long ball this season, having surrendered at least one home run in six of his eight starts and multiple home runs in three of his starts. His surface stats remain viable for most league formats, but he has seen key peripheral metrics fall off from last season's pace.
May 1 2018Anderson (3-2) earned the win Tuesday against the Reds, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks across 5.1 innings. He struck out four.Anderson wasn't particularly sharp, yielding three runs in the first inning and finishing with a season high four walks. He settled down after that juncture but was chased from the game in the fifth, when a baserunner on his ledger scored against the bullpen. All in all it wasn't Anderson's best showing, but he still won for the third time in four starts and still has a solid 3.38 ERA. He'll look to put in a better shift in this weekend's matchup with the Pirates.
Apr 26 2018Anderson (2-2) got the loss against the Cubs on Thursday despite giving up just one run on five hits over seven strong innings, striking out two and walking one as the Brewers lost 1-0.Anderson pitched great in this one but was unlucky to come out on the short end of what was a great pitching duel with the Cubs' Kyle Hendricks. He's now got a 2.86 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP through his first 34.2 innings, and although he's not posting the strikeout totals of a fantasy ace, he's doing just about everything else at that caliber. So far, it's looking like last season's breakout that saw him emerge as an unexpectedly consistent fantasy weapon was not a fluke.
Apr 25 2018Manager Craig Counsell moved Jhoulys Chacin's start to Wednesday against Kansas City, pushing back Anderson to Thursday versus the Cubs, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Anderson will get a second crack at Chicago in as many series after taking the loss -- allowing two earned runs off four hits and two walks while striking out two -- during his third start of the year against the Cubs on April 8. This shouldn't have any impact on Anderson earning two starts next week, as he will likely take the hill in Cincinnati on Tuesday following by a matchup against Pittsburgh on Sunday.
Apr 19 2018Anderson (2-1) got the win in Milwaukee's 12-3 blowout of the Marlins on Thursday, giving up three earned runs on five hits over 5.1 innings, striking out three and walking two.Anderson was aided by a strong showing from his offense against Miami but he was still effective in earning his second win in five starts to begin the season. Anderson hasn't been posting elite strikeout totals so far this year but he's posted very solid ratios with a 3.25 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 27.2 innings and opponents are hitting just .206 off him over that timeframe. So far, he looks poised to build on last season's breakout campaign that saw him post a 2.74 ERA in 141.1 innings.
Apr 14 2018Anderson (1-1) picked up the win over the Mets on Saturday, allowing one run on two hits and two walks over 6.1 innings while striking out five. The right-hander threw 58 of 87 pitches for strikes as he recorded his second quality start in four outings to begin the season. Anderson's 2.82 ERA and 18:7 K:BB through 22.1 innings are solid, and he appears set up for another impressive performance Thursday at home against the Marlins.
Apr 8 2018Anderson gave up two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two across 6.0 innings during Sunday's loss to the Cubs.Anderson didn't receive any run support, but he did manage to pitch a solid game against a tough Chicago lineup. He was able to bounce back after his last start against the Cardinals where he allowed four runs in just 4.0 innings. The 30-year-old right-hander will look to pick up his first win of the season during his next start, which figures to come either Friday or Saturday against the Mets.
Apr 3 2018Anderson gave up four earned runs on eight hits over just four innings, striking out five and walking none in Milwaukee's 5-4 comeback victory over the Cardinals on Tuesday. It was a dud follow-up to his strong debut start to the campaign that saw him shut out the Padres, but Anderson's 3.60 ERA and 1.20 WHIP still look fairly solid through his first two starts of the season despite the shaky effort. He's coming off a breakout 2017 where he logged a 2.74 ERA in 141.1 innings and will look to get back to that form in a tough matchup against the Cubs in his next start on Sunday.
Mar 29 2018Anderson completed six innings Thursday against the Padres, allowing no earned runs on one hit and three walks while striking out six.Anderson took his first step toward legitimizing his breakout 2017 campaign with his Opening Day start. Despite the strong surface numbers, Anderson's control was a bit concerning as he walked three batters and started just 10 of the 23 batters he faced with a strike. There's no reason for serious concern after a single start, but Anderson will need to improve his control as he faces more difficult opponents in future starts.
Mar 12 2018Anderson was named the Brewers' Opening Day starter Monday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. With Jimmy Nelson (shoulder) expected to be sidelined through Opening Day, Milwaukee will turn the ball over to Anderson for the season opener in San Diego. The 30-year-old is coming off a career-best year during which he posted a sharp 2.74 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 133:41 K:BB across 25 starts (141.1 innings).
Mar 5 2018Anderson allowed one earned runs in five innings over his last two spring appearances.Anderson allowed two runners to cross home plate in his one-inning spring debut, but he was far sharper over his last two appearances, and was so efficient in his last outing that he needed to throw additional pitches in the bullpen after leaving the game, according to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Anderson, the owner of a 2.83 ERA since the All-Star break back in 2016, is the favorite to get the Opening Day start for the Brewers.
Oct 26 2017Anderson signed a two-year contract extension with Milwaukee that guarantees $11.75 million through 2019, while adding on a pair of club options for 2020 and 2021 Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. In total, this deal could wind up netting Anderson over $31 million once incentives kick in, and will keep the right-hander in Milwaukee for the foreseeable future following his phenomenal 2017 season. Over this past year, he accumulated a 2.74 ERA and 1.09 WHIP while posting a 12-4 record during 25 starts. It appears as though Anderson will receive a salary of just over $4 million for 2018, and $6 million in 2019, with club options for $8.5 and $9.5 million, respectively, for the following two seasons.
Oct 26 2017Anderson signed a two-year contract extension with Milwaukee that guarantees $11.75 million through 2019, with club options for 2020 and 2021, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. In total, this deal could wind up netting Anderson over $31 million once incentives kick in, and will keep the right-hander in Milwaukee for the foreseeable future following his phenomenal 2017 season. Sep 29 2017Anderson (12-4) earned the win over the Cardinals on Friday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out five over seven innings.A home run off the bat of Paul DeJong in the fourth inning accounted for the extent of the damage against Anderson, who lowered his ERA to 2.74 with this gem. Anderson missed close to two months with an oblique injury this season, but his performance when on the mound was stellar, with an uptick in velocity playing no small part in his success. Perhaps he overachieved a bit, but Anderson probably won't be priced up as much as some other breakout arms next spring.
Sep 25 2017Anderson (11-4) was stuck with the loss Sunday despite holding the Cubs to three runs on seven hits and a walk across 6.1 innings of work. He struck out eight.Although the hit count was high, Anderson did what he could to keep the Brewers in it all afternoon. He wound up getting the short end of the stick after hanging a few too many curveballs in the fourth inning and serving up a two-run home run to Ben Zobrist in the seventh. Despite this, Anderson's ERA for the season still sits at a stellar 2.81 mark, and his K:BB during the month of September is a solid 27:6. With the Brewers gunning for the final playoff spot in the National League, look for him to get back in the win column when he takes on the Cardinals during the final series of the regular season.
Sep 19 2017Anderson (11-3) tossed six scoreless innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Pirates, allowing five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts.Anderson was in the strike zone at a 66 percent clip, including first-pitch strikes to 15 of 23 batters. He induced just two goundball outs, but he consistently induced weak contact, which he supplemented with his second-best strikeout total of the season. Anderson has been particularly sharp of late, allowing just one earned run across 16.1 innings over his last three starts. He will take a sterling 2.74 ERA into Sunday's start against the Cubs.
Sep 14 2017Anderson (10-3) allowed two runs -- one earned -- on seven hits and a walk while striking out two batters through 5.1 innings during Wednesday's win over Pittsburgh.Considering Anderson was pitching on just three days rest, this was another excellent outing from the righty. He now boasts an impressive 2.84 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 27:12 K/BB over six starts since returning from the disabled list. It's also worth noting that he hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of his past 13 outings. Anderson projects to make his next start against the Pirates at PNC Park.
Sep 12 2017Anderson will start Wednesday against the Pirates. The right-hander will toe the rubber on just three days' rest, but he only threw 67 pitches over five innings in his last start, so his arm should be pretty fresh. Anderson has posted a 3.08 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 25:11 K:BB in five starts since his return from an oblique injury (26.1 innings).
Sep 9 2017Anderson (9-3) allowed no runs on one hit and one walk while striking out five across five innings to earn the victory Saturday against the Cubs.Anderson had an 11-run lead, and he was removed from the contest after firing just 67 pitches. He's held opponents to three or fewer earned runs in each of his start since May 21, and with a 2.93 ERA on the season, he's been outstanding fantasy option. He'll make his next start Friday against the Marlins.
Sep 4 2017Anderson allowed four runs - three earned - on seven hits and three walks while striking out four batters over 5.1 innings Monday against the Reds. He didn't factor into the decision.Anderson has now failed to complete six innings in three of his four starts since returning from the disabled list, a stretch over which he owns a 3.80 ERA and 20:10 K:BB across 21.1 innings. Despite his slow return from an oblique injury, the 29-year-old still owns a career-best 3.06 ERA and 8.5 K/9 in 111.2 innings this season. His next start is scheduled for Saturday against the Cubs.
Aug 30 2017Anderson (8-3) picked up the win Wednesday after giving up three runs on two hits and two walks with six strikeouts in six innings against the Cardinals.According to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Anderson dealt with a split fingernail early in the game, which contributed to him surrendering two runs in the first inning. He had the fingernail super glued in after that frame, however, and was able to hold the Cardinals to one run over his final five frames. There is no indication this will affect his status for his next scheduled start Monday in Cincinnati.
Aug 25 2017Anderson (7-3) allowed two runs on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts over five innings to take the loss Friday against the Dodgers. The Brewers are still limiting Anderson's pitches as this was just his second start back from the disabled list with an oblique injury. Anderson gave up a solo home run to Logan Forsythe but managed to stop the floodgates from opening. The constant stream of baserunners, though, forced him to throw 96 pitches through five innings. Anderson has pitched well since returning from the DL, but he might not be able to go deep into games for a few weeks.
Aug 20 2017Anderson (7-2) allowed one earned run on two hits across five innings of an 8-4 win over the Rockies on Sunday. He walked three and struck out four.Anderson was making his first start since June 28 after being sidelined with an oblique injury, and did well to hold the potent Rockies lineup in check. He now owns a solid 2.83 ERA and will look for another strong outing in his next start Friday against the Dodgers.
Aug 20 2017Anderson (oblique) was officially activated from the DL prior to Sunday's start against the Rockies. We knew he would start Sunday, so this move is just a formality. It's not an ideal first game back, as Anderson will have to navigate the brutal pitching environment in Coors Field. His two rehab starts came in Colorado Springs, so he is accustomed to the thin air. He only threw 67 pitches in his last rehab start, so he may not be permitted to go very deep into this start. Anderson pitched like a frontline starter prior to getting hurt, posting a 2.89 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 85 strikeouts in 90.1 innings. Even so, it is probably best to look for a better option in daily leagues, given all of the other factors involved Sunday.
Aug 15 2017Anderson (oblique) will return to the big-league rotation Sunday in Colorado, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. He will forgo a third rehab start, but unfortunately will take the hill in Coors Field, so it's not necessarily a must-start situation for Anderson's owners. The righty gave up five runs with five strikeouts over 7.2 innings in his two rehab starts, and most of that damage came when he was pitching at Colorado Springs on Sunday, so we've got a recent example of what can happen when he pitches at a high altitude. Anderson was excellent prior to his injury, logging a 2.89 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 85 strikeouts in 90.1 innings.
Aug 10 2017Anderson (oblique) will make his next rehab start with Triple-A Colorado Springs on Sunday, MLB.com's Adam McCalvy reports.Anderson was able to throw 47 pitches with Low-A Wisconsin during his first rehab game Tuesday, and is set to make another with Milwaukee's Triple-A team this weekend. Following this upcoming start, the right-hander will need one more appearance with Colorado Springs before rejoining the Brewers, barring any setbacks. He figures to steadily increase his workload from the 3.1 innings he tossed with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, and could be back on the mound in San Francisco on August 23 for the series finale if all goes according to plan.
Aug 9 2017Anderson (oblique) tossed 3.1 innings for Low-A Wisconsin in his rehab start Tuesday, giving up one run on two hits and a walk while striking out three batters.Anderson demonstrated good control of all four of the offerings in his arsenal, recording strikes on 31 of his 47 pitches. The right-hander said after the outing that he would require two more rehab starts before rejoining the Brewers, likely in late August. According to Carson Mason of MLB.com, Anderson's next two outings likely won't be with the Low-A affiliate, but instead with Triple-A Colorado Springs. Brewers manager Craig Counsell should provide more clarity on Anderson's next destination before the weekend.
Aug 6 2017Anderson (oblique) will begin his rehab assignment with Low-A Wisconsin on Tuesday.Anderson has been on the disabled list with a strained left oblique for over a month, so he'll require two-to-three rehab starts before rejoining the Brewers' starting rotation. His current rehab timeline puts him on track to return to the majors in late August, barring any setbacks.
Aug 4 2017Anderson (oblique) will start a rehab assignment on Tuesday or Wednesday with one of Milwaukee's minor-league clubs, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Anderson is in line for at least two, or even three starts before returning to the Brewers. If he winds up needing three outings during his assignment, he would likely rejoin the team in California against either the Giants or Dodgers around the fourth week of August. Upon his arrival, Anderson will immediately bolster Milwaukee's rotation, as his 2.89 ERA and 1.11 WHIP lead the club's starters by a considerable amount.
Aug 4 2017Anderson (oblique) was able to throw 30-to-35 pitches during Friday's simulated game, while a rehab assignment looms on the horizon, MLB.com's Adam McCalvy reports. With all systems checking out during Friday's simulated game, Anderson appears likely to return to the rotation within the next two weeks. The next progression during his recovery will include a rehab outing to one of Milwaukee's minor-league affiliates, and it wouldn't come as a surprise if the right-hander wound up spending a couple starts on his rehab stint. There should be a clear timetable in the coming days once the Brewers announce when Anderson will go on his assignment.
Aug 1 2017Anderson (oblique) successfully completed a bullpen session Tuesday and will face live hitters in a simulated game Friday, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Anderson continues to inch closer to a minor-league rehab assignment. If all goes well with Friday's appearance, he could embark on his rehab stint as early as next week, although more details should emerge once he gets over his current hurdle.
Jul 30 2017Anderson (oblique) is scheduled to throw his third bullpen session at some point early this week before likely facing hitters by next weekend, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.Anderson's first two bullpen sessions have gone without a hitch, so he'll presumably up his pitch count during his third session before advancing to the next phase of the rehab process. Once he faces hitters in live batting practice one or two times, Anderson would then likely begin a rehab assignment as soon as next week. Rotation depth has been a weakness for the Brewers this season, so Anderson's potential return in mid-to-late August would surely provide a boost on that front.
Jul 28 2017Anderson (oblique) will throw a full bullpen session Saturday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.Anderson already did light throwing off a mound earlier in the week, but it seems like he's getting close to a full return. The hope is that he can return to the Brewers' rotation sometime in mid-August, which would align with the original six-week return window. An exact return date should become clearer once he moves on to a rehab assignment.
Jul 26 2017Anderson (oblique) threw lightly off a mound Wednesday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. This wasn't a full bullpen session, but it's good to see that he's nearly back to full mound work. Anderson hopes to return after just six weeks on the shelf, which would get him back around the weekend of August 11. A firmer timetable for his return should come forth once he begins a rehab assignment, which should happen relatively soon.
Jul 17 2017Manager Craig Counsell said that Anderson's (oblique) rehab is moving along and the earliest he could begin throwing off a mound is during the next home stand, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. This appears to push the right-hander's return a bit further into August. No word on an estimated return date has come forth at this point, but things should become clear once he returns to the mound. Brent Suter should continue to log starts in his stead until he returns to the fray.
Jul 1 2017Anderson (oblique) is expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. This is a difficult development for the Brewers' rotation as Anderson has been enjoying a breakout season through the first half of the season. He suffered an oblique strain during an at-bat in the Brewers' series against the Reds earlier in the week and now it has been confirmed that he'll be out well beyond the All-Star break. If he makes it through rehab without any setbacks, look for an early August return for the right-hander.
Jun 30 2017Anderson (oblique) will likely miss more than a month, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports.Anderson went down with the oblique injury in the second inning of his start Wednesday against Cincinnati. The main issue for Anderson is that he'll likely need a long rehab assignment, and as such, it's entirely possible his absence will extend into August. Jorge Lopez will take over his rotation spot for now.
Jun 29 2017Anderson was placed on the 10-day disabled list Thursday with a left oblique strain.Anderson injured his oblique while taking a swing in Wednesday's game against the Reds. It's unclear how long he'll be sidelined at this point, but he could be set to miss an extended period of time given the trickiness of oblique injuries. Jorge Lopez was recalled from Double-A Biloxi to help out in the bullpen while the Brewers figure out who will fill in for Anderson while he's sidelined.
Jun 28 2017Anderson was lifted after just one inning due to a left oblique injury, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.Anderson came to the bench holding his left side after striking out in the top of the second inning, and he was promptly replaced on the mound by Paolo Espino for the bottom half of the inning. It's unclear how serious the injury is at this point, but more should be known once he is further evaluated Thursday.
Jun 28 2017Anderson will be placed on the 10-day disabled list Thursday with a right oblique strain, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.Anderson said he felt like he got stabbed after injuring himself while taking a swing in the second inning of Wednesday's game against the Reds. This is a tough break for Anderson, as he was sporting the tenth best ERA (2.92) among starters heading into the contest. It's unclear how long the injury will keep him sidelined, but oblique injuries tend to be tricky, so the Brewers will likely exercise caution with the 29-year-old. A clearer timetable for his return will hopefully become available as he is further evaluated in the coming days.
Jun 22 2017Anderson (6-2) allowed just two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out seven batters through six innings during Thursday's win over Pittsburgh.Anderson has now surrendered just six runs through 40.2 innings over his past six starts and owns a high-end 2.92 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 8.5 K/9 for the year. The 29-year-old righty might prove to be a late bloomer, as his 3.45 FIP reinforces his current breakout. A road start against Cincinnati is up next for Anderson.
Jun 17 2017Anderson allowed three runs on five hits and struck out six batters through seven innings during Saturday's loss to the Padres. He didn't factor into the decision.Anderson has now allowed just four runs through 34.2 innings over his past five starts and owns a high-end 2.92 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 8.3 K/9 for the campaign. The 29-year-old righty is in the midst of a career year, and his 3.39 FIP highlights everything he's doing on the mound is sustainable. A home date with the Pirates is up next for Anderson.
Jun 11 2017Anderson (5-2) took the loss against the Diamondbacks on Sunday despite allowing just one run and striking out eight over six innings of work. While Anderson saw his scoreless streak end in the first inning, he rebounded to finish with a respectable line, even if he does show up in the loss column. The right-hander has lowered his ERA from 4.25 to 2.83 in his last four starts, a span in which he has struck out 30 batters.
Jun 7 2017Anderson (5-1) tossed 7.2 scoreless innings in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Giants, scattering six hits and a walk while striking out four.Only two Giants got into scoring position against Anderson on the night while the Brewers' defense turned four double plays behind him, snuffing out any potential rallies. The 29-year-old now has a 21.2 inning scoreless streak going, but he'll be hard-pressed to extend it much further as his next start comes Sunday on the road against the dangerous Diamondbacks.
Jun 1 2017Anderson (4-2) pitched seven scoreless innings with seven strikeouts during Thursday's win over the Mets. He allowed just three hits and a walk.Anderson sports a 3.30 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 8.5 K/9 for the year and hasn't allowed a run over 14 innings through his past two starts. Shutting down the Diamondbacks and Mets in consecutive starts is especially impressive considering they rank fourth and seventh in runs scored in the National League, respectively. The 29-year-old righty's 3.39 FIP suggests his current results are sustainable, and the Milwaukee offense will provide plenty of offensive support. Anderson's fantasy value is trending up. He lines up to face the Giants at Miller Park in his next start.
May 27 2017Anderson (3-1) pitched seven-plus shutout innings, allowing one hit with three walks and 11 strikeouts in Saturday's 6-1 win over Arizona. It didn't look like this was going to be a good day for Anderson, who walked the first two batters of the game. But he struck out Paul Goldschmidt and Jake Lamb to get out of the early jam and settled into quite a groove. He struck out eight of the first 15 batters he faced, on his way to a career-high 11 strikeouts, outdueling Zack Greinke in the process. The lone hit Anderson allowed came on a clean single to center by Nick Ahmed to lead off the eighth inning. It was Anderson's 114th pitch of the game, a career-high, so it's not certain he would been allowed to continue much longer. The performance was a big turnaround from his recent outings. He'd pitched into the sixth inning just once in his last four starts, allowing 16 runs in 18.2 innings prior to Saturday's gem. Anderson will look to build on this performance on Thursday when the Brewers visit the Mets.
May 21 2017Anderson (2-1) allowed six runs on seven hits (three home runs) while walking three and striking out two over four innings in Sunday's 13-6 loss to the Cubs.Believe it or not, it was only Anderson's second loss since July 25 last season. The long ball was his undoing in this one, as he allowed one to Ben Zobrist and two to superstar Kris Bryant. Before Sunday's outing, Anderson had only given up two home runs on the season, and one of them came way back on April 6. The 29-year-old will head into his next start with a 41:19 K:BB and 7.6 K/9 in 48.2 innings over nine starts.
May 20 2017Anderson's start Saturday was postponed due to rain, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.Anderson will likely take the ball Sunday against Jake Arrieta and the Cubs, although the Brewers have an off day Monday that would allow them to skip Anderson if they so choose.
May 20 2017Anderson has been confirmed as the starter for Sunday's game against the Cubs, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.Saturday's scheduled start was postponed due to inclement weather in Chicago, so the Brewers will opt to keep Anderson on turn and bump him back to Sunday. Anderson will be opposed by Jake Arrieta when the two teams meet in the series finale. The 29-year-old Anderson has a 4.09 ERA on the road this season, but he's also managed to fan 23 batters in 22.0 innings away from Miller Park.
May 16 2017Anderson allowed four runs on six hits while walking three and striking out five over 5.1 innings for a no-decision in Monday's 6-5 extra-innings loss to the Padres.Anderson's ERA rose to 3.43, and he needed 90 pitches in a start that his fantasy owners were likely expecting much more out of him against the weak-hitting Friars. The 29-year-old right-hander hasn't had a blowup outing yet but also isn't standing out in fantasy circles. He's merely a back-end starter in deep mixed leagues.
May 11 2017Anderson (2-0) allowed two runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out four over 4.2 innings in Wednesday's 7-4 win over the Red Sox.Boston put runners on base in every inning against Anderson, who needed 99 pitches (65 strikes) to record just 14 outs, but he was able to escape any serious damage. He'll look to get back in the win column Monday in San Diego.
May 3 2017Anderson will not pitch Wednesday night after the game was postponed due to inclement weather. The right-hander was initially due to face off with St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright, but a heavy dose of rain ended those plans for the moment. No pitching plans have been revealed at this time, but it seems like a good bet that Anderson would simply slide back to Thursday's contest, which is now rescheduled to be a night game.
May 3 2017Anderson will make his next start Thursday against the Cardinals, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.Anderson was initially scheduled to pitch Wednesday, but inclement weather resulted in the game's postponement. As expected, Anderson will simply start the series finale instead, while the other four Brewers starting pitchers will also be pushed back a day on the schedule.
Apr 23 2017Anderson allowed an unearned run on six hits and a walk while striking out six batters over six innings during Saturday's loss to St. Louis. The outing brought Anderson's ERA down to 1.13, and he's shown an uptick in the punchout department with a 8.25 K/9 and 22.9 strikeout percentage through four starts. The 29-year-old righty posted a 5.09 FIP last season and allowed a 36.6 hard-hit percentage, so it might still be too early to dub him a breakout candidate. He's still worth keeping tabs on and a speculative grab isn't out of the question, either. Anderson projects to face the Braves next.
Apr 17 2017Anderson (2-0) allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk across five innings in Monday's win over the Cubs. He struck out five.Anderson gave up all three runs in the first two innings as the Cubs manufactured offense, but he settled down and left with a one-run lead heading into the sixth. The right-hander allowed more baserunners in this one than he had in his previous two starts -- perhaps a product of the stiff opposition -- but his ability to battle with men on base allowed him to leave with a shiny 1.50 ERA to go along with a WHIP of exactly one. The early returns have been stellar for Anderson, who will look to continue his strong start Saturday against the Cardinals.
Apr 12 2017Anderson (1-0) struck out seven while allowing just three hits and two walks (one intentional) over seven scoreless innings in a win over Toronto on Wednesday. He certainly wasn't the marquee name on the mound in this one -- Marcus Stroman started for Toronto and pitched a complete game -- but Anderson stood out for the second straight start. Now that he's muffled the Rockies in his first start and the Blue Jays in his second, Anderson merits interest in fantasy circles. That said, his past doesn't seem to suggest a ton of upside, so he should still be approached with caution.
Apr 7 2017Anderson came away with a no-decision Thursday despite allowing only one run on three hits and two walks over six innings in a 2-1 loss to the Rockies. He struck out four.He was on the hook for the loss before Kirk Nieuwenhuis popped a solo homer in seventh inning, but otherwise is was a very successful first outing of the season for Anderson, who threw 53 of 88 pitches for strikes. The righty will face another dangerous offense in his next start Tuesday in Toronto.
Mar 30 2017Anderson was named Milwaukee's fourth starter Thursday.Anderson has put on a decent showing this spring and owns a 3.77 ERA after five games (14.1 innings). However, there's plenty of reason to question whether this will carry over to the regular season, as Anderson has yet to finish a season with an ERA below 4.00 and is coming off a year that saw him allow home runs at an alarming clip of 1.7 HR/9.
Mar 26 2017Anderson owns a 3.77 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and 9:4 K:BB in 14.1 innings over five appearances this spring.Anderson posted a 3.02 ERA in 14 outings after the All-Star break last season and has not experienced much trouble this spring, but he is still not a lock to open the regular season in the Brewers' rotation. Expect a final call on his role to be made soon as the Brewers line up their rotation for Opening Day.
Feb 14 2017Anderson lost his arbitration case Tuesday and will receive $2.45 million for the 2017 season, FanRag Sports' Jon Heyman reports. He had been seeking $2.85 million, but the arbiter sided with the Brewers in Anderson's first arbitration case. Anderson is in a complicated position heading into the season, as he underwhelmed somewhat last season (4.39 ERA, 1.37 WHIP), and may soon be passed on the organizational depth chart by some of the Brewers' younger, more exciting arms.
Sep 28 2016Anderson gave up four runs (three earned) on eight hits over five innings in Texas on Wednesday. He struck out two and walked two while avoiding the decision.Despite his travails, Anderson actually held a 5-4 lead when he left the game, but the Brewers' bullpen ended up blowing it. Up until this game, he'd been working on a surprisingly excellent September -- a 1.21 ERA and 1.03 WHIP over 22.1 innings spanning four starts -- and actually posted decent numbers on the whole from late July through Wednesday, his final start of the season. Even so, Anderson's modest strikeout totals, middling control and proneness to the long ball are not good attributes in a fantasy starter. He'll very likely go undrafted in most leagues next year.
Sep 22 2016Anderson (9-11) allowed just one run on four hits and one walk Thursday while striking out six in 5.2 innings of work in a 3-1 win over the Pirates.Anderson has put together a solid September for the Brewers, going 2-2 while ceding just three earned runs on 17 hits in 22.1 innings. He has achieved this by keeping the baseball inside the park and forcing ground balls on almost 47 percent of at-bats, a strong 17 percentage points higher than his ground ball rate for August. He could be a risky play, however, next Wednesday when he faces Cole Hamels and the Rangers on the road.
Sep 16 2016Anderson didn't factor into the decision on Friday versus the Cubs, giving up two earned runs on five hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out three.Anderson was solid throughout his time on the mound, firing 52 of 85 pitches for strikes and only giving up a two-run homer to Alberto Almora, Jr. in the fifth. The 28-year-old has now only given up Friday's two earned runs over his last three starts, a span of 16.2 innings. He's also yielded no more than three earned runs in any start since June 28, lowering his ERA from 5.45 to 4.47 during that period. Anderson will look to continue his stretch of strong pitching when he takes on the Reds next Friday.
Sep 5 2016Anderson (8-11) tossed five scoreless innings in Sunday's win over the Pirates, scattering five hits and striking out two.He got yanked for a pinch hitter after only 65 pitches with the Brewers leading 1-0, but the move paid immediate dividends as Jonathan Villar launched a grand slam in Anderson's place to put the game away. The right-hander hasn't lasted more than six innings in a start since early June, greatly limiting his win potential, and he's unlikely to break that trend in his next outing Saturday in St. Louis.
Aug 28 2016Anderson (7-11) allowed two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out five over 5.1 innings to take the loss Sunday against the Pirates.Anderson lost his first game since July 9, breaking a personal three-game winning streak, and during that time, he's lowered his ERA from 5.13 to 4.92 while serving as both a starter and reliever. Unfortunately, he's seen both his ERA and WHIP increase in each of the two seasons since his rookie campaign in 2014. He'll make his next start Saturday against the Pirates.
Aug 24 2016Anderson pitched five innings, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six Rockies in Tuesday's no-decision.Making his first start since injuring his quad on Aug. 16, Anderson tied his season high in strikeouts over a 96-pitch effort Tuesday. The 28-year-old has shown improvement in recent weeks, logging a 3-0 record with a 3.82 ERA, versus a pre All-Star record of 4-10 and an ERA of 5.44. Anderson is scheduled to make his next start Sunday against the Pirates, a team that owns a team batting average of .303 against the right-hander over 10 innings this season.
Aug 20 2016Anderson will start Tuesday against the Rockies, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Brent Suter's audition in the rotation lasted all of one game as he's now slated to pitch out of the bullpen with Anderson returning to a starting role. Anderson has mostly struggled this season, although he was pitching better for a stretch before suffering a quad injury earlier this month.
Aug 20 2016Anderson (quad) gave up two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out two over two innings out of the bullpen on Friday. It's quite possible that the Brewers will keep using Anderson out of the bullpen for the time being, as they have five healthy starters after Brent Suter was recalled to start Friday (and not sent down after the start). Junior Guerra is also expected back at some point in the coming weeks, so Anderson's role will be a little murky going forward.
Aug 19 2016Anderson (quad) will be available out of the Brewers' bullpen this weekend and will slot back into the rotation at some point, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. It appeared that Anderson would rejoin the Brewers' rotation early next week, and that could still be the case. However, this report makes it seem like he may not start the next time or two through the rotation. Anderson's role could hinge on the status of his bruised quad, as he has thrown the ball well since the All-Star break, posting a 3.12 ERA over six starts.
Aug 17 2016Anderson (quad) hopes to make his next scheduled start Saturday, MLB.com's Adam McCalvy reports.Anderson was forced from his last start Tuesday in the first inning after being struck by a line drive, but he is hopeful to avoid missing any further action. A final call on his status will likely be made based on how he feels later this week.
Aug 16 2016Anderson left Tuesday's game with a left quadriceps bruise, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.A line drive off the bat of the Cubs' Kris Bryant caught Anderson in the leg, forcing Anderson from the game in the first and the Brewers' bullpen into early duty. The diagnosis of a bruised quad would seem to bode well for Anderson's chances of avoiding the DL but his status for this weekend's series in Seattle is up in the air.
Aug 16 2016Anderson left Tuesday's start after facing just two batters, as he was hit near the left knee by a line drive off the bat of Kris Bryant, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Tom Haudricourt reports. The liner hit Anderson square on the inside of his left knee, and while he was able to pick up the ball and make the throw to first base, he limped off midway through the first inning. Jhan Marinez replaced Anderson in what will now turn into a bullpen game for the Brewers. Look for the team to provide an official diagnosis later in the game.
Aug 11 2016Anderson (7-10) tossed 5.1 innings in Wednesday's win over the Braves, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out three. He doesn't offer much in the way of longevity or overall results, but Anderson's on a nice little run, having won three of his last four outings while allowing two or fewer runs each time. Anderson's lack of whiffs and poor ratios mean he's best ignored for fantasy purposes even with his recent warmth, especially with a start against the Cubs up next.
Jul 30 2016Anderson (6-10) allowed one run (no earned runs) on four hits, struck out seven and walked two over five innings in a victory over the Pirates on Saturday.Andrew McCutchen, who reached on an error, scored Pittsburgh's only run off Anderson. The right-hander started by striking out the side in the first and set a new season-high with seven strikeouts. He was good, but this is also the eighth start where he failed to pitch into the sixth inning. Anderson has a 5.13 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 81 strikeouts in 100 innings.
Jul 25 2016Anderson (5-10) tossed five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out five Diamondbacks in Monday's win against his former team.Anderson pitched deeper into Monday's game than he had in any of his previous five starts. He allowed fewer than two walks and won a game for the first time since June 8 against Oakland. The win is bitter sweet for Anderson, who went 15-13 in 48 starts the past two seasons for Arizona. It's always nice to beat the team that traded you, yet the 28-year-old righty is having the worst season of his short three-year career. He'll take a 5.40 ERA and 1.45 WHIP into his next start Saturday against the Pirates.
Jul 20 2016Anderson gave up three runs on six hits and two walks while pitching just four innings Wednesday against Pittsburgh. The Brewers piled up eight runs in the first five innings of this game, so all Anderson had to do was last long enough to get the win, but he couldn't do it. In fact, the righty has failed to complete five frames in five consecutive starts and has a truly terrible 12:15 K:BB in that span. Unfortunately for the Brewers, they have precious few options to replace him in the rotation, so they're likely to keep rolling Anderson out, which should draw the attention of DFS players.
Jul 9 2016Anderson (4-10) allowed two runs on four hits and five walks while striking out five over four innings to take the loss Saturday against the Cardinals.Anderson struggled with control, and was lifted after four innings while the Brewers' offense was only able to provide a single run of support, leading to Anderson's 10th loss of the year. He's now failed to fire a quality start in any of his last four outings, and his ERA is at 5.44 on the season. He'll make his next start after the All-Star break.
Jul 3 2016Anderson (4-9) allowed three runs on four hits and five walks while striking out two over 4.1 innings to take the loss Sunday at the Cardinals.Anderson was extremely wild, walking more than a hitter per inning, and was fortunate to hold the Cards to only three runs. He's now allowed 19 earned runs in his last 15.2 innings over four starts to move his ERA to 5.49 on the year. He'll make his next start Saturday against the Cardinals.
Jun 21 2016Anderson will skip his expected start Saturday in order to get some rest, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. The Brewers planned to allow Anderson to get time off by skipping his next start, in order to get rest around the All-Star break. He is coming off one of his poorer outings of the 2016 season, allowing seven runs while not even getting out of the third inning in Saturday's loss to the Dodgers. Milwaukee could start Matt Garza in Anderson's place Sunday since he would be throwing on normal rest, and then move Jimmy Nelson to Sunday's contest. They could also dip into Triple-A Colorado Springs and start Hiram Burgos in Anderson's spot.
Jun 13 2016Anderson allowed four runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts in a no-decision Monday against the Giants.Anderson was a bit wild, as he managed just 10 first-pitch strikes to 21 hitters and received just 12 called strikes in 95 pitches. He also gave up his 14th home run in just 13 starts. While he has been better of late -- Anderson had a 2.43 ERA and 29:4 K:BB in his previous six starts -- the home run ball continues to be a huge blight on his game and one he'll have to get over to improve his 4.42 ERA.
Jun 8 2016Anderson (4-6) shut out Oakland over 6.2 innings Wednesday, giving up just two hits while striking out four in a 4-0 win.The 28-year-old righty opened his season with a five-inning scoreless outing, but hadn't managed to replicate that feat over the 10 starts between that and Wednesday's start. That said, he's been a surprisingly reliable presence on the mound lately -- over his last six starts, Anderson has limited the opposition to only 10 runs in 37 innings (2.43 ERA) while putting up a shining 29:4 K:BB. That said, he pitches for a sub-.500 Brewers squad, he gives up way too many homers (because he lets hitters put the ball in the air too much), and his season ERA is still over the 4.00 mark, so unless you're a pitching-desperate NL-only owner, he's still waiver-wire material.
Jun 2 2016Anderson (3-6) allowed only one run on three hits over the course of 5.2 innings during Thursday's win against the Phillies. He struck out six.Even though Anderson pitched quite well, he was removed early since he was approaching 100 pitches during the fifth inning. Anderson lowered his ERA to 4.68, and he's allowed less than three runs in three of his last four outings. He will look to keep it going in his next start aganist Oakland on Wednesday.
May 23 2016Anderson (2-6) allowed three runs on four hits and two walks over five innings Sunday while striking out six in a 3-1 loss to the Mets.It wasn't a terrible outing by any means, although he only threw 59 of 101 pitches for strikes, but Anderson and the Brewers' hitters were simply outmatched by Noah Syndergaard. Anderson still has a 3.66 ERA, 0.71 WHIP and 16:4 K:BB over his last three starts (19.2 innings) and has a potentially favorable matchup in his next outing at home against the Reds on Saturday.
May 17 2016Anderson (2-5) allowed two runs on three hits and a walk with six strikeouts over 8.2 innings in a win Monday against the Cubs.Anderson took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and a shutout into the ninth. He ran out of gas before he could get the final out, allowing a pair of solo home runs to Jason Heyward and Kris Bryant, but for eight innings he locked down arguably the best lineup in baseball. He induced 11 swinging strikes in 110 pitches, drew 10 ground outs, and held the Cubs to zero hits in just four at-bats with runners in scoring position. After four starts of allowing at least four earned runs from April 18 through May 5, Anderson now has a pair of quality starts in a row. However, he still has a 5.32 ERA and has now given up 11 home runs in just eight starts.
May 11 2016Anderson (1-5) took another loss Wednesday in Miami after allowing three runs on three hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out four.Anderson was terrifically efficient, tossing only 74 pitches through those six frames, but he was removed for a pinch hitter with the Brewers trailing in the seventh. The move didn't help him avoid his fifth consecutive loss, astretch in which Anderson has given up 24 earned runs (and another three unearned) thanks to nine homers in just 24.1 innings. His next start comes Tuesday against the Cubs, and considering all these long balls, DFS players should strongly consider stacking against him in that outing.
May 5 2016Anderson (1-4) was crushed again Thursday, allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits and two walks over five innings in a loss to the Reds. After opening the season by allowing just three unearned runs over 11 innings in his first two starts, Anderson has taken a turn for the distinctly horrible over the last four. In that span, he's pitched only 18.1 innings while allowing a ridiculous 34 hits and 24 runs (21 earned), thanks in no small part to eight homers. The 28-year-old righty would be pitching his way right off the Brewers' roster if not for the team's lack of options.
Apr 30 2016Anderson (1-3) was roughed up again, this time by the Marlins, as he allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits, including three homers over 4.1 innings. He also struck out four and walked four in a loss.Derek Dietrich, Adeiny Hechavarria, and Giancarlo Stanton all hit solo homers off Anderson. After not yielding a run over his first two outings, the Brewers right-hander has allowed 15 runs in the last 13.1 frames. During that time, he's tossed up six long balls. Last season, Anderson gave up 18 homers in 152.2 innings. He will try to get back on track again in his next scheduled start Thursday against the Reds.
Apr 23 2016Anderson (1-2) allowed six runs on eight hits, struck out only two and walked four in a loss to the Phillies on Saturday. After not yielding an earned run through two outings, Anderson has allowed 10 runs in the last nine frames. During that time, he's walked four batters and given up three homers. He'll try to get back on track in his next scheduled start Friday against the Marlins.
Apr 18 2016Anderson (1-1) took the loss in Monday's rain-shortened game against the Twins as he allowed five runs (four earned) on 11 hits. He struck out four.Anderson induced eight ground ball outs and exhibited sharp control, with 62 strikes in 96 pitches. But Anderson just couldn't miss Twins bats, as he induced just four swinging strikes, and when he missed, it was punished hard, as he allowed four extra-base hits including a pair of homers. The Twins are the first team to get to Anderson this year, who still owns a 2.25 ERA in his first three starts as a Brewer.
Apr 13 2016Anderson allowed three unearned runs in the first inning of Wednesday's win over the Cardinals, but settled down to finish six frames without another blemish. He allowed four hits and two walks while striking out four in the no-decision.Despite the early struggles caused by Colin Walsh's error at third base, Anderson turned in a credible outing, just as he did in his first start of the season. He's been less hittable than in his Arizona days over these first two games, but that's not much of a sample to judge by. Anderson's relative lack of strikeouts and team context make him a lower-end fantasy starter until he strings enough quality outings like this together to convince us otherwise.
Apr 9 2016Anderson (1-0) threw five scoreless innings, surrendering four hits and striking out five in Friday's 6-4 victory over the Astros.Although he'll normally slot fifth in the Brewers rotation, Anderson got the call as the fourth starter Friday and acquitted himself quite well in his Milwaukee debut. He demonstrated his typically sharp control, throwing 53 of 85 pitches for strikes and securing first-pitch strikes on 10 of the 18 hitters he faced. The 27-year-old showed some stamina in hurling 152.7 innings for the Diamondbacks in 2015, and could serve as a valuable back-end piece of the Brewers rotation in 2016.
Apr 4 2016Anderson will start Friday's game against the Astros, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Todd Rosiak reports. He will start the Brewers' fourth game of the season, as Matt Garza (shoulder) will be skipped the first time through the rotation, although when the Brewers are healthy Anderson slots in as the No. 5 starter. Anderson will oppose Scott Feldman for the Astros in what could be a fairly high-scoring affair.
Mar 22 2016Anderson owns a 10.13 ERA, 1.88 WHIP, and 4:0 K:BB ratio in 10.2 innings over four spring starts.Anderson has been anything but sharp this spring, but his poor performance will not prevent him from breaking camp as the fifth starter with his new squad. While he will break camp as part of the starting rotation, he will need to pitch better than he has over the last few weeks if he wants to hold down his spot.
Jan 30 2016Anderson was traded to the Brewers on Saturday in a five-player deal, ESPN's Keith Law reports.Perhaps the Brewers see something with Anderson that they think they can improve, but at the very least he will be a capable innings eater while their young pitchers continue to develop. He had a 4.30 ERA and 111 strikeouts in 152.2 innings with Arizona last year, and will see a downgrade in defense and run support in Milwaukee.
Sep 30 2015Anderson took a no-decision after 5.1 innings of work, allowing one earned run over four hits and three walks while striking out four in Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Rockies.Anderson settled down after allowing a DJ LeMahieu sacrifice fly in the second inning, limiting the Rockies to just one run in his final start of the season. While he managed to improve his walk rate considerably from last season, Anderson's dreadful second half and paltry 6.54 K/9 leaves little reason to think he'll have mixed league value in 2016.
Sep 23 2015Anderson struck out ten Wednesday night, giving up one earned run on one hit while walking two in a 4-1 loss to the Dodgers.Anderson took a tough luck no-decision after a terrific outing -- retiring 18 of 20 hitters after giving up a leadoff home run to Chase Utley. Despite putting up eight runs in each of the first two games of this series against the Dodgers, the Diamondbacks offense could only muster one run of support for the right-hander. If nothing else, Wednesday's outing will secure Anderson's rotation spot through the season.
Sep 19 2015Anderson will receive the start Wednesday against the Dodgers, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.Anderson was temporarily dropped from the rotation after giving up five runs over two innings back on a Sept. 8 against the Giants, but starter Rubby De La Rosa's struggles versus the Dodgers this season will result in manager Chip Hale granting Anderson another opportunity. The right-hander has been pummeled in eight second-half starts, producing a 6.08 ERA and 1.62 WHIP over 40 frames.
Sep 19 2015Anderson threw a four-inning simulated game on Friday and could make a start next week, reports Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.Anderson said that he is working on a cutter in his side work, which could diversify his repertoire. He threw his sim game on the same day that teammate Rubby De La Rosa took his regular turn, which could offer a tip about when Anderson would make his next start as manager Chip Hale previously suggested that De La Rosa may not make his next start against the Dodgers, against whom he has struggled. If Anderson does face the Dodgers, it won't be an easy assignment, but it will be on the road in a more pitcher friendly ballpark than Chase Field.
Sep 16 2015Anderson won't start on schedule, but could make another start before the season ends, reports Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.Anderson was roughed up in his last start against the Giants, so it's not a surprise to learn he won't take the hill in his regular spot. It's been a strange season for Anderson, whose first half 3.91 ERA and 1.21 WHIP over 101.1 innings looked decent, before he completely blew up in 40 second half innings, posting a 6.08 ERA and 1.63 WHIP. Coming into the year, he looked like a candidate to take a step forward based on peripheral numbers like his 3.67 xFIP in 2014, but now it's unclear where he fits as he wraps up a disappointing season.
Sep 8 2015Anderson took a beating and fell to 6-6 Tuesday against the Giants, as he allowed five runs on five hits and a walk over just two innings. He struck out three.Anderson gave up a pair of home runs and a double in the drubbing. It was Anderson's shortest start of the year and his fifth start of fewer than five innings. All five of those have come since June 23, over which time his ERA has jumped from 2.84 to 4.52.
Sep 3 2015Anderson allowed three runs on eight hits over five innings in a no-decision on Wednesday. He also struck out five Rockies in a 9-4 loss.Anderson threw just 81 pitches in this game and it was clear they wanted to be careful with the youngster after a Coors Field blow-up earlier this season. After a rough stretch, Anderson has not given up more than three runs in any of his last three starts. He'll look to keep that stretch going against the Giants next Tuesday.
Aug 28 2015Anderson hurled a quality start against the A's on Friday, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk across six innings in a no-decision. He also struck out three.Anderson's last two starts have been bad as he allowed nine hits and five runs in both outings, but this performance was much better. It appears he's hitting a bit of a wall as his ERA has jumped nearly a run and a half in his last ten starts. His 10-percent strikeout-to-walk rate is far too low compared to his minor league numbers (20-percent) and he should improve on that in years to come. Anderson has another very tough matchup in his next start when he travels to Coors Field to take on the Rockies on Wednesday.
Aug 23 2015Anderson threw 6.2 scoreless innings in a win over the Reds on Sunday, allowing five hits and three walks while striking out two.It wasn't exactly a dominant performance, but the defense turned three double plays behind Anderson, allowing him to complete more than six innings for the seventh time this season. Anderson appeared to have lost his rotation spot after back-to-back poor outings, but he was summoned back with Jeremy Hellickson (hamstring) landing on the DL. He lines up to face the A's at home in his next start.
Aug 20 2015Anderson was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Thursday. The Diamondbacks sent Anderson packing Wednesday following another poor outing (five runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings against Pittsburgh), but the right-hander was summoned right back to replace Jeremy Hellickson (hamstring) on the active roster. Anderson will look to turn in his 11th quality start in 22 chances when he opposes the Reds' Raisel Iglesias on Sunday.
Aug 19 2015Anderson was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Wednesday, Nick Piecoro of azcentral reports.Anderson has struggled mightily in each of his last two starts after coming off of the disabled list. He allowed five earned runs on nine hits in five innings against the Phillies last Wednesday and followed it up with another five-run, nine-hit shelling in 4.2 innings on Tuesday in Pittsburgh. Anderson will head to Reno for the first time this season, and Zach Godley will return to Arizona to fill his rotation spot.
Aug 12 2015Anderson (5-5) gave up five runs on nine hits while striking out five in Wednesday's loss to the Phillies. After he sparkled in his return from the DL, it's disappointing to see Anderson take a step back in this one, though he left the game in the sixth inning with three runs on his record and two men on; the Arizona bullpen then allowed those runners to score and more. Anderson should keep the disaster outings minimal with his solid control, but his general lack of bat-missing stuff limits his upside.
Aug 7 2015Anderson (5-4) threw seven shutout innings on the way to a win over the Reds on Friday. He struck out seven while giving up four hits and two walks during the contest.Having just come off the disabled list, Anderson impressed on Friday and recorded arguably his best start of the season - his seven strikeouts tying a season high. It's worth remembering that Anderson owned a 2.84 ERA in the middle of June before a collection of poor starts temporarily unraveled his season. Back and apparently healthy, it'll be interesting to see if Anderson is able to return to early-season form.
Aug 7 2015Anderson (triceps) was reinstated from the 15-day DL on Friday.Previous reports indicated Anderson has been hitting his usual velocities during rehab, so he should be good to go when he takes the field Friday. His return pushed Zachary Godley out of the rotation and into the minors, which happened Wednesday, and will push Godley's replacement, Allen Webster, back to the minors.
Aug 6 2015Anderson (triceps) is set to come off the disabled list Friday and make the start against the Reds, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. The Diamondbacks will make a slight change to their weekend rotation, giving Robbie Ray an extra day of rest and turning to Anderson for the series opener Friday. Anderson made one start during his rehab assignment, throwing four innings for the Diamondbacks' rookie Arizona league team on Sunday. Anderson's triceps injury appears to be behind him as he was able to hit 94 miles per hour on the gun during his rehab appearance.
Aug 6 2015Anderson should return from the disabled list for the D-backs' upcoming series with the Reds, starting either Friday or Saturday, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.Arizona's rotation has struggled lately making Anderson's return timely. He has had an up and down season, reflected in his 4.35 FIP. Perhaps more concerning is his 5.74 K/9, which is down significantly from the 8.27 mark he posted last year. There is some hope that if he was pitching through an injury the time off will have helped him enough that he can pitch better through the rest of the season.
Aug 3 2015Manager Chip Hale said Monday that it hasn't been determined whether or not Anderson (triceps) will need another rehab start before rejoining the Diamondbacks, MLB.com's Steve Gilbert reports.Anderson made a four-inning appearance for the Diamondbacks' rookie-level affiliate Sunday, striking out three batters and walking none in a scoreless outing. That success against low-level competition should hardly be taken as evidence he's back to full health, but with Anderson already throwing after missing just over two weeks, it probably won't take him long to return to form. Prior to Patrick Corbin's addition to the rotation, Anderson had functioned as the Diamondbacks' de facto ace before his numbers began to tail off prior to the DL stint. He's now sitting on a rather pedestrian 4.37 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over 105 innings this season.
Aug 1 2015Anderson (triceps) will pitch in an Arizona League game Sunday, and is expected to rejoin the Diamondbacks on the team's next homestand, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. The Diamondbacks' next homestand begins Friday, making that presumably the earliest that Anderson would rejoin the starting rotation. Upon his return, Zachary Godley would likely be returned to the
Jul 19 2015Anderson was placed on the 15-day DL Sunday due to right triceps inflammation.Anderson didn't make it through the fourth inning in Saturday's start, allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits before being lifted. The right-hander has had his fair share of shaky starts this season, but with this being one of his worst, it was apparent that another outside factor was in play. The team has yet to announce a replacement in the rotation.
Jul 10 2015Anderson allowed four runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out four over just 4.1 innings of a 4-2 loss to the Mets on Friday night.Anderson (4-3, 3.91 ERA) has been one of the more reliable starters for Arizona this season, but he has developed a bad habit of allowing home runs early on in games. He gave up a three-run shot off the bat of Lucas Duda and a solo homer by Michael Cuddyer in the first inning, and that marks three consecutive starts he has given up a home run in the opening frame.
Jul 4 2015Anderson held the Rockies to three runs on three hits and a pair of walks Friday. He struck out five and didn't receive a decision in the eventual 10-inning win. After the Rockies torched Anderson for eight runs at Coors Field two starts ago, the change of venue to Arizona didn't seem to be helping initially -- he gave up all three runs in a first-inning rally. However, he settled down big-time thereafter, allowing just a lonely single while shutting Colorado out for the following five frames. It looks like Anderson's back on the right track after giving up 12 runs with a 4:4 K:BB in his last two outings, but with his lack of bat-missing ability, there could be a bit more volatility to come.
Jun 28 2015Anderson won his fourth game of the season Sunday against the Padres, allowing four runs across seven innings. All four runs the 27-year-old allowed came via the home run, but he was otherwise able to limit the Padres and was bailed out by his offense. Anderson has been solid on the whole this season, with a 4-2 record and a 3.66 ERA through 91 innings, and will take on the Rockies in his next start Friday.
Jun 23 2015Anderson was torched by the Rockies at Coors Field on Tuesday, as he gave up eight runs on eight hits and three walks in a loss.He served up three home runs in a classic Colorado blowup. He had given up three home runs all season prior to the start and should have better success in his next projected outing Sunday in San Diego. His ERA shot up from 2.84 to 3.54 after Tuesday's disaster.
Jun 18 2015Anderson (3-1) picked up the win against the Angels on Wednesday, giving up two runs, seven hits and a walk while striking out two in six innings.Anderson, who allowed one hit in seven scoreless innings at San Francisco in his previous start, blanked the Angels through four, keeping them hitless until Kole Calhoun lined a single with one out in the fourth. The run Anderson gave up in the fifth was his first in 14.2 innings. Anderson wasn't at his best Wednesday, but he was good enough for the win. He'll face off against the Rockies in Colorado on Tuesday in his next scheduled start.
Jun 13 2015Anderson (2-1) was fantastic Friday night, allowing just one hit and one walk in seven scoreless innings in a 1-0 win over the Giants. While Anderson only struck out two batters, he took a no-hitter into the seventh in a spectacular performance, outdueling San Francisco ace Madison Bumgarner. Aside from a six-run outing against Milwaukee two starts ago, Anderson has not allowed more than two runs in any of his last eight starts. The only issue for Anderson is his strikeout rate, as he has only rung up 49 batters 73.1 innings. If he can discover a strikeout pitch, he could become a must-own fantasy option in the long run. Anderson's next start comes at home Wednesday when Arizona hosts the Angels.
Jun 7 2015Anderson went 5.2 innings Saturday, allowing just one run on eight hits while striking out six in a 2-1 win over the Mets.Other than a Juan Lagares solo homer, Anderson pitched well, working his way out of trouble repeatedly. He threw a career-high 107 pitches, which could be a factor in his next start, as Anderson has only exceeded 100 pitches twice this year. He's been a surprisingly solid fantasy asset, having allowed two or fewer runs in six of his last seven outings. Anderson's next start will be Friday in San Francisco.
Jun 1 2015Anderson had his poorest outing of the year Sunday in a no decision against the Brewers, allowing six runs on 10 hits while striking out three.Anderson has allowed 10 hits in each of his past two starts and it caught up to him in this one. He limited the damage by not yielding a walk or a home run, which he has been very successful in doing all year. He remains a good candidate to post above average ratios, but the decline in his strikeout rate from 8.27 K/9 last year to 6.08 K/9 this year limits his upside and is a small red flag going forward.
May 25 2015Anderson scattered 10 hits and a walk over six innings, but only allowed two runs in Monday's loss to the Cardinals.Just one of the hits Anderson allowed went for extra bases, which allowed him to minimize the damage and preserve his 2.59 ERA for the season. He also managed to skirt the loss, as teammate Mark Trumbo supplied a game-tying two-run homer in the eighth inning to have the outcome decided by each team's relief corps. Anderson can't count on these kinds of positive results with stranding runners and avoiding hard hits every time out, which suggests his ERA could begin to fade from its lofty perch. However, such a regression may not be significant, as Anderson's 3.16 FIP shows some support of his vastly improved surface numbers this season.
May 21 2015Anderson allowed one run on four hits and one walk in a career-high eight innings and struck out two against the Marlins to pick up his first win of the season Wednesday.Anderson used his two-seam fastball to keep the Marlins' hitters off balance. He mixed his pitches and attacked the strike zone all night. Anderson (1-1) picked up his first win of the season in eight starts. He pitched into the ninth and left the bases loaded with nobody out, but Brad Ziegler was able to finish off the Marlins allowing just one run to score. Anderson's next start will be at St. Louis on Monday.
May 9 2015Anderson went seven strong allowing only one run on five hits in a no-decision, in the 6-4 loss to the Padres Saturday.Anderson pitched very well Saturday, throwing only 93 pitches to get through seven innings, but only recording two strikeouts. His quality start and win was killed by his poor bullpen and that could be a theme with this Diamondback team. Anderson's next start won't come for eight days when he takes on the Phillies next Sunday.
May 3 2015Anderson threw his best game of the season on Sunday against the Dodgers, striking out seven and walking one across six shutout innings.Unfortunately for Anderson, the Diamondbacks bats were stifled by Brett Anderson and the Dodgers bullpen before L.A. won the game on a walkoff home run in the 13th inning. Anderson is now the owner of a solid 3.38 ERA and will look to build on this strong start against the Rockies on Friday.
Apr 28 2015Anderson took the loss Tuesday against Colorado, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks, and striking out four.Coming off his best outing of the year, this performance is a bit disappointing. Anderson's 4.24 ERA and 1.29 WHIP leave something to be desired, but his 3.37 FIP suggests he has been a bit unlucky. No need to worry yet if you were counting on him at the back of your rotation.
Apr 22 2015Anderson threw seven strong innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and striking out five, but didn't factor in the decision as the D-Backs bullpen imploded in a 7-1 loss to the Rangers. Each of Anderson's three starts have gotten better with this one making his best of the season. His 3.00 ERA and 1.11 WHIP are supported by good peripheral stats and he has at least five strike outs in each of his three starts as he looks to become a solid mid-rotation option for the Diamondbacks.
Apr 16 2015Anderson allowed two runs and eight hits in six innings, striking out five and walking one in a no-decision Wednesday against the Padres.Anderson was better in his second start than his first, but he has yet to pick up a win or a loss this season. His next start will be Tuesday against Texas.
Apr 10 2015Anderson threw five innings in his 2015 debut, allowing three earned runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out six. He didn't factor in the decision.A good start for Anderson, although he wasn't very efficient with his pitches as he needed 94 pitches to get through five innings. Anderson is coming off a good season in 2014, which saw his strike out more than 8 K/9 and post a 4.01 ERA and 1.37 WHIP. He is a candidate to take a step forward this year if he can lower his walks and homeruns allowed.
Apr 7 2015Anderson will start Friday against the Dodgers, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. The Diamondbacks named Anderson to the starting rotation last week, but it wasn't entirely clear would he would slot in. Manager Chip Hale announced that Anderson will occupy the No. 4 spot, between Jeremy Hellickson and Archie Bradley. Anderson has held Yasiel Puig and Adrian Gonzalez, the Dodgers' No. 2 and 3 hitters, to three hits in 12 at-bats so far in his career, but two of those hits have left the yard.
Mar 17 2015Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale has intimated that Anderson is in position to claim a rotation spot, The Arizona Republic reports. The same goes for Trevor Cahill, so while nothing is yet certain, it seems the Diamondbacks may have a whole host of pitchers competing for just one spot. Josh Collmenter and Jeremy Hellickson entered spring training as locks, leaving Cahill and Anderson as the likely third and fourth options in the rotation. Assuming Cahill and Anderson do in fact solidify their spots, the likes of Robbie Ray, Rubby De La Rosa, Allen Webster and Randall Delgado will all be left to fight for the fifth and final spot.
Feb 27 2015Anderson may have an inside track to begin the season in the Diamondbacks' rotation, the Arizona Republic reports. "Chase Anderson won nine games for us last year; you have to strongly consider him as part of our rotation," general manager Dave Stewart said. "When you look at those three guys, those have to be guys you strongly consider."There is a long list of candidates in the mix for a spot behind Josh Collmenter and Jeremy Hellickson, who appears to be the only two locks to begin the year with starting roles. Durability has been an issue throughout Anderson's time as a member of the D-backs' organization, but his debut last season included a 21.6% K% and 3.67 xFIP over 114.1 innings. Anderson's change up is easily his best offering, but he'll need to find a way to improve the effectiveness of his fastball in order to have long-term success as a big league starter. One adjustment that Anderson is hoping to make is to more frequently utilize a two-seam fastball, with the goal of keeping the ball in the park more consistently.
Sep 19 2014Anderson (9-7) was beat up by Rockies hitting on Friday night as he gave up six runs on nine hits over five innings, while notching five strikeouts in the loss.In a game where the Rockies scored 15 runs, Anderson can count himself lucky that he only allowed six himself. It just wasn't his night as his ERA jumped up over the 4.00 mark for the first time since May 28. Friday was Anderson's last start of the season after tossing over 150 innings on the year between the minors and majors.
Sep 16 2014Anderson's start on Friday will be his last of the season, the Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro reports. He has pitched 148.1 innings between Double-A and the big leagues this season, so with Friday's start likely to give him 150 innings for the first time in his professional career, the Diamondbacks will shut him down. He posted a 3.70 ERA and a 21.7 percent K-rate to go with an 8.2 percent walk rate, so if he is able to land a spot in Arizona's rotation next season, he could be a sneaky draft pick in deeper leagues. The Diamondbacks were using a six-man rotation, so nobody will need to replace him for what would have been his final start on Aug. 26, everyone else will simply move up a day.
Sep 14 2014Anderson picked up the win Saturday, allowing three walks, four hits and two runs, while striking out five against the Padres.Anderson pitched a solid game and received plenty of run support in Arizona's 10-4 victory Saturday. The rookie may have pitched his last game this season, as manager Kirk Gibson is considering resting him for the rest of the season. Anderson has pitched a combined 148.1 innings this season- including the minors- the most in a single season in his professional career.

May 7 2014Manager Kirk Gibson said the Diamondbacks are "leaning toward" starting Anderson on Sunday vs. the White Sox, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. The banishment of Mike Bolsinger back to the minors creates an opening in the rotation for the Snakes, who seem inclined to give Anderson the opportunity to stick as a starter instead of going back to Randall Delgado or Trevor Cahill, who flopped in such roles earlier this season. Anderson had been one of the best pitchers in the Pacific Coast League prior to his promotion to the big leagues, posting a 0.69 ERA and 38:6 K:BB ratio over 39 innings (six starts). It could be enough to make him an interesting speculative add in NL-only or deeper leagues, but it may be prudent to keep him on the bench against a potent White Sox offense.
May 6 2014The Diamondbacks recalled Anderson from Double-A Mobile on Tuesday.Anderson was brought up to take the roster spot of Michael Bolsinger, who will head back to Triple-A Reno. Anderson pitched well (0.69 ERA, 38:6 K::BB ratio) in six starts with Mobile this season, but he did not have the same success pitching up a level with Reno last season, so it remains to be seen if he will join the rotation. The Diamondbacks will not need a fifth starter until Sunday, so Anderson will likely pitch out of the bullpen to begin with.
