Mar 30 2024Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey revealed Saturday that DeSclafani will be out for the season after undergoing flexor tendon surgery on his right elbow, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The silver lining is that DeSclafani did not undergo Tommy John surgery, but the right-hander will be sidelined for the season. DeSclafani experienced right elbow soreness at the beginning of March, and while he was able to throw some bullpen sessions and a minor-league game, he will ultimately not play in 2024. Louie Varland is now cemented as the Twins' fifth starting pitcher.
Mar 28 2024The Twins placed DeSclafani (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After being acquired from the Mariners in January, DeSclafani was expected to open the season as a back-end starter for the Twins, but he was diagnosed with a right elbow strain following an appearance in a minor-league spring training game in mid-March and will be headed for an extended absence. The Twins haven't offered up a firm timeline for his return, but after landing on the 60-day IL, DeSclafani will be sidelined for at least two months.
Mar 18 2024Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey said DeSclafani will open the season on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm strain, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to Helfand, Falvey adds that DeSclafani will have his injury assessed by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Keith Meister, after which the Twins should have a better idea on a treatment plan for the right-hander. DeSclafani had entered spring training as a frontrunner for a back-end spot in the Minnesota rotation, but he didn't make any Cactus League appearances while the Twins eased him back after his 2023 campaign was cut short by a right elbow flexor strain. DeSclafani was able to cover 1.2 innings in a minor-league spring training game over the weekend, but his forearm apparently didn't respond well. Though DeSclafani will be eligible to return from the IL around the middle of April, given the nature of his injury and his history of arm trouble, it wouldn't be surprising if he required a long-term absence, regardless of whether or not Meister recommends surgery. Louie Varland now looks to be the leading candidate to open the season as Minnesota's No. 5 starter.
Mar 16 2024DeSclafani (elbow) threw 1.2 innings in a Triple-A spring training game Saturday with three strikeouts and two walks, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani hasn't appeared in a major league spring training game, but that could come in the next week. DeSclafani has made nice progress since feeling soreness in his right elbow at the beginning of the month, but it's not certain he'll be ready for Opening Day despite this progress. His primary competition for the fifth spot in the rotation, Louie Varland, has thrown 11 scoreless innings with an 11:1 K:BB this spring.
Mar 14 2024DeSclafani (elbow) got through another bullpen session without issue Thursday and his next step is to pitch in a minor-league game, Nick Nelson of Twins Daily reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Twins manager Rocco Baldelli wasn't sure which day the minor-league appearance would take place, but it's imminent. DeSclafani has made nice progress since feeling soreness in his right elbow at the beginning of the month, but his availability for Opening Day remains very much in question. His primary competition for the fifth spot in the rotation, Louie Varland, has spun 11 scoreless innings with an 11:1 K:BB this spring.
Mar 8 2024DeSclafani (elbow) felt good after a 35-pitch bullpen session Friday, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander has been slowed by right elbow soreness early in spring training, but he's building up his workload and could soon be facing live hitters. DeSclafani will meet with the training staff Saturday to dictate the next steps for his return.
Mar 4 2024DeSclafani (elbow) threw another bullpen session Monday as he ramps back up following a brief shutdown period, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani experienced soreness in his right elbow following his second live batting practice session of the spring. However, he was cleared for a bullpen session this past Friday and threw off a mound again Monday. The setback was worrisome given that DeSclafani is coming back from a flexor strain, but the Twins maintain confidence he can be ready for Opening Day. Working in the team's and the pitcher's favor is multiple early season off days, which would allow DeSclafani about five weeks to ramp back up, if that's the route the Twins want to take. If healthy, the righty looks to have a leg up over Louie Varland for the fifth spot in Minnesota's rotation.
Mar 1 2024DeSclafani has been slowed in Twins' camp by right elbow soreness, Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani felt some soreness following his second live batting practice session. While he's resumed long toss and hopes to return to a mound in a few days, the setback is a troubling development given that he missed much of the 2023 campaign with a flexor issue. For what it's worth, trainer Nick Paparesta said Friday that DeSclafani still has time to be ready for Opening Day. The righty is competing with Louie Varland for the fifth spot in the rotation.
Feb 14 2024DeSclafani (elbow) is considered fully healthy at the start of spring training, Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani was limited to 19 starts in 2023 due to a right flexor strain but told reporters Wednesday that he's been throwing for months. The veteran right-hander was acquired via trade last month and is competing to be the Twins' fifth starter.
Jan 29 2024DeSclafani (elbow), Justin Topa, Gabriel Gonzalez and Darren Bowen were traded from the Mariners to the Twins on Monday in exchange for Jorge Polanco, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani's tenure in Seattle didn't last long, as the right-hander was dealt to the Mariners earlier in the month alongside Mitch Haniger in exchange for Robbie Ray. DeSclafani was limited to 19 starts in 2023 due to a right flexor strain, and while the hope is that he'll be ready for Opening Day, he's yet to get the all clear. Once healthy, he'll provide a veteran presence near the back end of Minnesota's starting rotation.
Jan 5 2024The Mariners acquired DeSclafani (elbow), Mitch Haniger (back) and cash considerations from the Giants on Friday in exchange for Robbie Ray (elbow), Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani was limited to just 99.2 innings in 2023 due to a flexor strain after throwing just 19 frames in 2022 because of an ankle injury. He did not require surgery and the hope is that he will be ready for Opening Day in 2024, but it's far from a guarantee. The 33-year-old will make $12 million in 2024 in his final year under contract and should provide experienced depth for a young Seattle rotation.
Aug 14 2023DeSclafani (elbow) was transferred Monday from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani landed on the IL in late July with a flexor strain in his right elbow and recently underwent platelet-rich plasma treatment. He's not expected to resume throwing until at least mid-September and seems doubtful to pitch again for the Giants in 2023.
Aug 5 2023DeSclafani will receive a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right elbow and is expected to be shut down from throwing for 6-to-8 weeks, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Based on the 6-to-8-week timeline, DeSclafani's season is almost certainly over, barring a deep postseason run by the Giants. After missing most of last season with an ankle injury, DeSclafani returned to go 4-8 with a 4.88 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 19 appearances (18 starts) for the Giants in 2023. The right-hander is under contract for $12 million in 2024.
Jul 30 2023DeSclafani was placed on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a right elbow flexor strain, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was diagnosed with a Grade 1 strain after undergoing an MRI and will be shut down from throwing for at least the next few weeks, per Pavlovic. DeSclafani is without a timetable for hit return, but he shouldn't be expected back until at least mid-September given the shutdown period, and there's a chance he's unable to return this season.
Jul 28 2023DeSclafani appears set to work in bulk relief again Saturday against the Red Sox with Ryan Walker named the opener, per Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Giants have had some success throwing openers in front of their starters this season. It didn't work out well for DeSclafani last weekend -- he allowed four runs on eight hits over 4.1 innings against Washington -- but San Francisco will give it another try Saturday. DeSclafani has a 7.79 ERA and 1.67 WHIP over 32.1 innings since the start of June.
Jul 24 2023DeSclafani allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out two over 4.1 innings Sunday against Washington. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Scott Alexander only recorded two outs as the opener, DeSclafani came on in the first inning, allowing both inherited runners to score before surrendering four runs of his own over his subsequent four innings of work. The 33-year-old DeSclafani has failed to earn a win since May 29 -- he's pitched to a 7.79 ERA over his last 32.1 innings, going 0-4 in that span. Overall, DeSclafani is 4-8 with a 4.88 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 79:20 K:BB across 99.2 innings this season.
Jul 22 2023DeSclafani will likely operate in bulk relief Sunday versus the Nationals, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Scott Alexander will be the Giants' opener and then DeSclafani should soon follow. The 33-year-old right-hander holds a 4.72 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 77:18 K:BB in 95.1 innings this season while exclusively working as a starter.
Jul 19 2023DeSclafani did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing four runs on four hits over two innings in an 11-10 win over the Reds. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani was victimized by the home run ball in his return from a shoulder injury, as he allowed a pair of two-run shots to Jake Fraley and Will Benson in just two innings of work. On a positive note, DeSclafani did have the strikeout pitch working, with five of his six outs coming on Ks. The veteran right-hander has struggled after a solid start to the season, pitching to a 6.44 ERA over his last 12 outings. Overall, he's 4-8 with a 4.72 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 77:18 K:BB across 18 starts (95.1 innings) this season.
Jul 18 2023The Giants reinstated DeSclafani (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his start Tuesday against Cincinnati. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Right shoulder fatigue sent DeSclafani to the IL in early July, and he'll now return to the Giants' rotation after a minimum stay. DeSclafani made a rehab start in rookie ball Thursday, allowing one run on five hits while striking out four batters across four innings. He carries a 4.44 ERA and 1.19 WHIP heading into his start against the slumping Reds.
Jul 16 2023The Giants plan to activate DeSclafani (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Tuesday to make a start in Cincinnati, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani was shelved earlier this month after experiencing right shoulder fatigue, but he completed a rehab start Thursday without issue and will slot back into the rotation when the Giants require a fifth starter for the first time following the All-Star break. In his outing for the Giants' rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate this past Thursday, DeSclafani struck out four over four innings and allowed one run on five hits and no walks.
Jul 13 2023DeSclafani (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with the Giants' rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate Thursday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani is expected to require just one rehab start, setting the right-hander up to rejoin the Giants rotation next week. He has been on the shelf since early July due to right shoulder fatigue and posted a 4.44 ERA across 17 starts prior to being deactivated.
Jul 3 2023DeSclafani landed on the 15-day injured list Monday with right shoulder fatigue, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani was lifted from Sunday's start against the Mets after throwing only 55 pitches, and this move will get the right-hander some rest going into the All-Star break. Mike Yastrzemski (hamstring) was activated from the 10-day injured list to take DeSclafani's place.
Jul 2 2023DeSclafani (4-8) took the loss Saturday as the Giants were downed 4-1 by the Mets, giving up three solo home runs in three innings. He struck out three without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The homers were the only hits the veteran right-hander allowed and they all came in the third inning, as Francisco Alvarez, Brandon Nimmo and Francisco Lindor took DeSclafani deep to chase him from the game after only 55 pitches (34 strikes). After a strong start to the year, he has a 6.39 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 31:11 K:BB over his last eight outings and 38 innings, serving up eight homers along the way. DeSclafani will try to turn things around in his final start before the All-Star break, which is likely to come at home next weekend against the Rockies.
Jun 25 2023DeSclafani (4-7) yielded two runs on five hits over six innings Sunday, striking out three and taking a loss against Arizona. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After allowing a run in each of the first two innings, DeSclafani fired four shutout frames to end his afternoon. Assuming he doesn't take the mound again this month, he went 0-3 with a 6.65 ERA across five starts in June. DeSclafani now owns a 4.28 ERA and a 69:18 K:BB through 16 starts. His next outing is currently lined up to be a road start against the Mets.
Jun 20 2023DeSclafani didn't factor in the decision Tuesday against the Padres after he allowed three runs on eight hits and one walk in five innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It certainly wasn't a bad start from DeSclafani, though it's still the fifth time in his past six outings he's given up at least three earned runs. The right-hander has a 4.38 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 66:18 K:BB across 84.1 innings this year, and he tentatively projects to next take the mound this weekend versus Arizona.
Jun 15 2023DeSclafani did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk over three innings against the Cardinals. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Things were looking good for DeSclafani early on after the right-hander struck out the side in the first inning to kick things off. He was unable to carry that momentum into the next frame, however, giving up singles to three of the first four batters he faced before surrendering a grand slam to Tommy Edman to put San Francisco in an early hole. DeSclafani was fortunate to escape with a no-decision after losing five of his last six decisions coming in, and he's now allowed 12 runs through three starts this month.
Jun 9 2023DeSclafani (4-6) allowed two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out two over six-plus innings, taking the loss versus the Cubs on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani got through six scoreless innings before running into trouble in the seventh. Ryan Walker then allowed two inherited runners to score, which was enough to give DeSclafani the loss despite his quality start. This was just the second time he's gone at least six innings over his last six appearances. The right-hander has a 3.89 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 53:16 K:BB through 76.1 innings over 13 starts this season. DeSclafani is lined up for a road start in St. Louis next week.
Jun 4 2023DeSclafani (4-5) allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out two over three innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All of that damage came in the third inning. DeSclafani has allowed at least five runs in three of his last six starts, a puzzling stretch of struggles for the veteran right-hander after he started the year well. He's also walked multiple batters in three of his last four starts. He's at a decent 3.97 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 51:12 K:BB through 70.1 innings over 12 outings this season. DeSclafani is projected to make his next start at home versus the Cubs.
May 29 2023DeSclafani (4-4) yielded three runs on eight hits over seven innings Monday, striking out two and earning a win over Pittsburgh. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani gave up just one run through six frames before the Pirates put two on the board in the seventh. He's given up three or more runs in four of his last five outings, raising his season ERA to 3.48. DeSclafani has registered a 5.22 ERA during that five-game span after posting a 2.13 ERA through his first six outings. He'll carry a 49:9 K:BB into his next outing, which is projected to be at home against the Orioles.
May 24 2023DeSclafani (3-4) took the loss Wednesday, allowing seven runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks over five innings during a 7-1 loss to the Twins. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani surrendered a leadoff homer to Edouard Julien in the bottom of the first, and things didn't get much better for the right-hander as the game progressed. He allowed at least one run in each of the first four innings but was charged with only four earned runs thanks to a trio of errors in the third. Despite allowing a season-high seven runs, DeSclafani was able to finish at least five innings and record six-plus strikeouts for a second consecutive game and the fourth time this season. He'll look to get back on track next time out, which is tentatively scheduled for the opener of a three-game set versus Pittsburgh.
May 20 2023DeSclafani did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against Miami. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani continues his hot start, as he's now tied for ninth in the league with a 0.99 WHIP. The former Red also sports a 5.9 strikeout-to-walk ratio, which would be a career-high if he stays at that pace throughout the season. The right-hander is tentatively slated to face the Twins on the road in his next appearance.
May 18 2023DeSclafani (toe) is scheduled to start Friday's game against the Marlins in San Francisco, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Giants' decision to move Sean Manaea to the bullpen earlier in the week supported the notion that the right toe issue that bothered DeSclafani during his most recent outing last Saturday in Arizona wouldn't be anything that forced him to miss a turn through the rotation. Through eight outings this season, DeSclafani has churned out a 3.06 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 35:5 K:BB across 50 innings.
May 13 2023Giants manager Gabe Kapler told reporters that DeSclafani left Saturday's start against the Diamondbacks with a left toe injury, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kapler told reporters that DeSclafani dropped a piano bench on his right toe a few weeks ago, and that the toe was "bugging" him during Saturday's start before ultimately exiting. The right-hander should be considered day-to-day at this point, but whether he can make his scheduled start over the weekend will depend on how he responds in the coming days.
May 9 2023DeSclafani (3-2) took the loss Monday, allowing five runs on 10 hits and one walk over seven innings against Washington. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Although DeSclafani pitched deep into the game, his five earned runs allowed were the most he's given up this year. However, the right-hander is still having a great season, as his 0.93 is tied for sixth in MLB. The 33-year-old is still a dependable option heading into his next tentative appearance against Arizona.
May 2 2023DeSclafani (3-1) earned the win Tuesday, allowing three hits and no runs in eight innings against the Astros. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani rolled through the Astros lineup, posting a season high in innings pitched. The only downside to DeSclafani's outing was a season-low three strikeouts. The righty has been spectacular this season, going at least five innings in every start. He now has a 2.13 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 30 strikeouts in 38 IP.
Apr 27 2023DeSclafani (2-1) earned the win over St. Louis on Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out six batters over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani served up two solo homers -- both by Paul Goldschmidt -- in his first three innings of work, but those were the only runs the Cardinals managed against him. The right-hander induced 13 swinging strikes and punched out six batters en route to his fourth quality start over his first five outings this season. DeSclafani has been a pleasant surprise for the Giants and his fantasy managers thus far, posting a 2.70 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 27:3 K:BB across 30 innings.
Apr 3 2023DeSclafani earned the win Monday, allowing no runs on three hits over six innings against the White Sox while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a very strong effort from DeSclafani on an afternoon where he was also provided plenty of run support. The right-hander gave up just one extra-base hit on a double to Yoan Moncada, and he pounded the strike zone while limiting hard contact throughout his six frames. DeSclafani will try and build on this effort in his next scheduled start Sunday against the Royals.
Mar 7 2023DeSclafani struck out three and allowed one hit over two scoreless innings versus the Rockies in Friday's Cactus League game. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Maria Guardado of MLB.com reports DeSclafani's fastball was around 93-94 mph, right in line with where it's been over the last three years. The right-hander is probable to begin the season in the Giants' rotation, and his first spring outing proves he's healthy after ankle surgery last July.
Mar 2 2023DeSclafani will make his Cactus League debut Friday versus the Rangers, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani has been able to go through a normal camp after recovering from ankle surgery he had last July. The right-hander will be in the mix for a spot in the Giants' rotation. He's looking to bounce back from an ugly 2022 in which he made just five starts and posted a 6.63 ERA.
Feb 16 2023DeSclafani (ankle) said Wednesday he is 100 percent healthy and expects to have a bounce-back campaign in 2023, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ankle surgery ultimately cut DeSclafani's 2022 campaign short after five starts and 19 innings, during which he posted a 6.63 ERA and 2.00 WHIP. The right-hander underwent surgery in July, and while his status is worth monitoring in camp, he should be in the mix for a rotation spot once the season begins. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports it's possible the Giants could use six starters at times this season, which would make it easier for DeSclafani and other pitchers to get up to speed early in the campaign.
Jul 7 2022DeSclafani (ankle) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Thursday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani announced last weekend that he'll miss the remainder of the season due to his right ankle surgery, so his move to the 60-day IL is simply procedural. The transaction clears space on the 40-man roster for Tobias Myers, who was traded from Cleveland to San Francisco on Thursday. DeSclafani will likely be ready for spring training in 2023 since he carries a recovery timetable of 4-to-5 months.
Jul 3 2022DeSclafani (ankle) said Sunday that he's out for the season, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani underwent right ankle surgery June 12 and will require another procedure to set a tendon in his ankle in place next Tuesday. The right-hander will require 4-5 months to recover, so it seems likely that he'll be able to return to the field for spring training in 2023. DeSclafani posted a 9.95 ERA and 2.05 WHIP in 19 innings over five starts this season.
Jul 1 2022DeSclafani was placed on the injured list with ankle inflammation Friday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani missed two months with the same issue earlier in the season, and he didn't look anything close to good in two starts since his return, giving up 12 runs in 5.2 combined innings. The Giants are worried about the recurrence of the injury, and surgery is on the table, Pavlovic reports. Jakob Junis (hamstring) is expected to eventually fill DeSclafani's spot in the rotation, but the team may have to go with a bullpen game or two until Junis ready to return.
Jun 26 2022DeSclafani (0-2) gave up seven earned runs on seven hits and a walk over 2.2 innings in a 10-3 loss to the Reds on Sunday. He struck out one and was tagged with the loss. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani had another miserable start since coming off the IL due to ankle inflammation, this time being chased after only 53 pitches in what should have been a relatively soft matchup. The veteran right-hander has now given up 12 earned runs in his past two starts to balloon his ERA up to 9.95 over 19 innings. DeSclafani will look to get back on track and recapture some of his success from 2021 his next expected start Sunday against the White Sox.
Jun 22 2022Desclafani gave up five earned runs on six hits and a walk - including two home runs - in a 12-10 win over the Braves on Tuesday. He struck out three and did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Desclafani's first start since April 21 did not go well. He was pelted by the Braves for six hits, including home runs off the bats of Marcell Ozuna and Matt Olson. Desclafani's workload was expected to be limited for this start due to having just missed two months on the IL for ankle inflammation, but his ineffectiveness could have led to him being pulled from the game anyways. The 32-year-old right-hander is coming off a career season in 2021 with 13 wins and a 3.17 ERA over 167.2 innings. He should have a chance to get back on track in his next start against the Reds this weekend.
Jun 21 2022DeSclafani (ankle) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list and is starting Tuesday's game against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 32-year-old was previously confirmed as Tuesday's starting pitcher, and he's now officially back on San Francisco's active roster. DeSclafani has been sidelined by ankle inflammation for the past two months, and he figures to face some workload limitations in his first couple outings back from the injury since he covered only 2.2 innings during his final rehab start with Triple-A Sacramento.
Jun 20 2022DeSclafani (ankle) will be activated from the 60-day injured list to start Tuesday's game against the Braves, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani will make his first start since April 21 after missing almost two entire months due to right ankle inflammation. His last rehab outing lasted just 2.2 innings at Triple-A Sacramento, so it wouldn't be surprising to see the Giants hold him to a pitch count Tuesday evening, though the club has yet to announce any such restriction. The move will be made official closer to first pitch, as San Francisco will need to send someone off the active roster to make room for DeSclafani's activation.
Jun 17 2022DeSclafani (ankle) is a candidate to start Tuesday's game in Atlanta, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Tuesday will be exactly two months after DeSclafani's last big-league outing, as he's missed an extended period with right ankle inflammation. He's made just two rehab appearances, throwing a combined 5.2 innings, but the Giants evidently feel as though he may be ready to go. Given that he's not stretched out to a full starter's workload, however, he's unlikely to be asked to pitch deep into Tuesday's game if the team does elect to activate him.
Jun 13 2022DeSclafani (ankle) will make another rehab start for Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani is working his way back from the ankle injury he suffered in late April. He threw three scoreless innings in his first rehab outing Saturday, so he'll likely target four or five frames this time around. Whether or not he'll need any more rehab starts at that point remains to be seen.
Jun 11 2022DeSclafani (ankle) allowed three hits and struck out three over three scoreless innings in a rehab start for Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani was excellent in his first game action since April 21. The right-hander still isn't eligible to come off the 60-day injured list until late June, so he's likely to make another start or two with Sacaramento to build his pitch count back up before he rejoins the Giants' roster.
Jun 10 2022DeSclafani (ankle) will make a rehab start at Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani isn't eligible to return from the injured list until at least late June, but he's hopeful that he'll be cleared to rejoin the Giants after making just two rehab starts. The right-hander posted a 6.08 ERA and 1.80 WHIP in 13.1 innings over three starts prior to sustaining his ankle injury, and he's trending toward returning after a relatively minimal stay on the 60-day IL.
Jun 3 2022DeSclafani (ankle) will throw a bullpen session Friday, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani was transferred to the 60-day injured list in mid-May, and he'll be ineligible to return to game action until at least late June. However, he began throwing bullpen sessions in early May, and it's encouraging to see him continue throwing off a mound. It's not yet clear when he'll be able to face live hitters.
May 16 2022DeSclafani (ankle) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani has been out since late April with right ankle inflammation. He's been throwing for nearly two weeks but apparently won't be ready for game action until late June. Per Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic, the veteran righty apparently hasn't suffered any sort of setback, but the Giants want to take things slowly with his recovery.
May 9 2022DeSclafani (ankle) threw a bullpen session Monday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani has been out for two and a half weeks with right ankle inflammation. He's taking steps in the right direction, as he resumed throwing last Monday and has advanced to bullpen work one week later, but he remains without a clear timeline to return.
May 3 2022DeSclafani (ankle) played catch Monday, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani hit the injured list in late April with right ankle inflammation and was shut down from throwing for a week. He probably won't need all that much time to get back up to speed, as he's been out for less than two weeks, but his expected return date has not yet been specified.
Apr 25 2022DeSclafani (ankle) won't throw for a week, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani visited an ankle specialist Monday and underwent an MRI, but the test didn't reveal anything more than the inflammation he'd already been diagnosed with. He won't throw for another week and will have to get back up to speed at that point, but he's at least avoided a more serious diagnosis.
Apr 22 2022DeSclafani was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with right ankle inflammation, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 32-year-old gave up five runs during Thursday's loss to the Mets and has had decreased velocity early in the season, and he's now scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday. DeSclafani dealt with a similar issue last season, though he didn't miss much time after receiving a cortisone injection. It's unclear exactly how long the right-hander will be sidelined this time around.
Apr 21 2022DeSclafani (0-1) allowed five earned runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out four across five innings to take the loss Thursday against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani gave up all of his runs across the first three innings, including two solo home runs. However, he was in trouble for nearly the entire outing, as he allowed multiple baserunners in his three of his five frames. Positively, this was DeScalfani's longest effort of the season, so if he pitches well he should be able to work relatively deep into his next start -- currently projected to come Tuesday at home against Oakland. Through three appearances, DeScalafani has a 6.08 ERA and 13:2 K:BB across 13.1 frames on the campaign.
Apr 17 2022DeSclafani allowed two runs on five hits while striking out four across 4.2 innings in a no-decision Saturday against the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani tossed 40 of his 64 pitches for strikes in this one and his command has been quite good to start the season, as he owns a 9:1 K:BB through 8.1 innings in 2022. He's looking to build off a strong campaign last season in which he posted a 3.17 ERA with a 1.09 WHIP across 167.2 frames, and he will try to earn his first win of the season in his next scheduled start, tabbed for April 21 on the road against the Mets.
Apr 10 2022DeSclafani allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out five in 3.2 innings during Sunday's win over the Marlins. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani's five strikeouts were encouraging during his season debut, but he was unable to qualify for the win since he lasted just 3.2 innings while throwing 74 pitches. Once he's fully built up, the right-hander figures to factor into more wins after he posted a 13-7 record with a 3.17 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 167.2 innings last year. He tentatively lines up to make his next start on the road against Cleveland on Saturday.
Mar 31 2022DeSclafani allowed one run on six hits and struck out two over 4.2 innings versus the Royals on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani has already covered 7.2 innings across two Cactus League appearances. He's allowed one run, eight hits and one walk with three strikeouts. The 31-year-old right-hander was excellent with a 3.17 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 152:42 K:BB in 167.2 innings last season. He'll likely slot into the middle of the Giants' rotation, with Logan Webb and Carlos Rodon occupying the top spots. DeSclafani should be a solid late-round option in fantasy if he can come close to replicating his 2021 campaign.
Nov 22 2021DeSclafani re-signed with the Giants for three years and $36 million Monday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani hasn't been remotely consistent from year to year, but he's had several strong seasons, including a career-best 3.17 ERA in 31 starts for the Giants in 2021. His 22.5 percent strikeout rate was slightly below average, but contact isn't punished as frequently in Oracle Park as it is elsewhere, and he avoided long rallies thanks to his 6.2 percent walk rate. The Giants evidently believe DeSclafani reached a new level last season and won't fall back to being the guy who posted a 7.22 ERA in 2020 or a 4.93 ERA in 2018. The ceiling may not be particularly high here, and his age (he'll turn 32 in April) as well as the likelihood of regression in his .265 BABIP both add risk, but the veteran righty still looks like a good bet to be a capable mid-rotation arm in 2022.
Nov 7 2021DeSclafani didn't receive a qualifying offer from the Giants, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani performed well during his first season with the Giants with a 3.17 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 167.2 innings across 31 starts. However, he'll now become a free agent with no draft pick penalty attached after San Francisco declined to offer him a one-year, $18.4 million deal.
Oct 13 2021DeSclafani (0-1) allowed two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out two in 1.2 innings to take the loss in Game 4 of the NLDS against the Dodgers on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani had recorded a 2.25 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 32 innings across his last six starts of the regular season, but he was pulled from Tuesday's postseason matchup after throwing just 28 pitches. It's not yet clear whether he'll be available out of the bullpen for Game 5 on Thursday following his brief appearance Tuesday, but he's a strong candidate to start in the NLCS if the Giants advance.
Oct 11 2021DeSclafani could start Game 4 of the NLDS against the Dodgers on Tuesday, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Gabe Kapler noted that DeSclafani will be available out of the bullpen for Game 3, but he also added the right-hander is a "great option" to start Game 4, per Crowley. The Dodgers have also elected to hold off on naming a starter for Game 4, likely waiting to see how Game 3 unfolds.
Oct 2 2021DeSclafani (13-7) earned the win over San Diego on Friday, pitching five scoreless innings during which he allowed four hits and no walks while striking out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander breezed through his final regular-season start, tossing 48 of 71 pitches for strikes and capping his career-best campaign by notching his 13th victory. It's the first time in his seven seasons that DeSclafani has reached double-digit wins, and he also concludes the campaign with the best ERA (3.17) and WHIP (1.09) of his career. He was even better down the stretch, posting a 2.25 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 25:6 K:BB across his final six starts.
Sep 26 2021DeSclafani allowed two runs on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts in four innings, taking a no-decision versus Colorado on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander kept the ball in the yard at Coors Field, so consider that a moral victory. He's allowed just one home run through 27 innings in five September starts. DeSclafani has pitched to a 3.26 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 149:42 K:BB through 162.2 innings this season. He's expected to make his last regular-season start during next weekend's series versus the Padres.
Sep 19 2021DeSclafani (12-7) allowed two earned runs on six hits while striking out six across six innings, taking the loss to Atlanta on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani fired six scoreless innings, but failed to record an out in the seventh after allowing a pair of runs. He surrendered a two-run homer to Adam Duvall. The 31-year-old has allowed just six earned runs in his last four starts. On the season, he has a 3.23 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 146 strikeouts in 158.2 innings.
Sep 15 2021DeSclafani (12-6) earned the win Tuesday against the Padres after tossing 6.2 innings of one-run ball, allowing three hits and a walk while fanning three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani delivered another dominant performance, but the fact that he did it against one of the most dangerous lineups in the National League delivers added value to this outing. He's now given up three or fewer runs in each of his last six appearances, though he only has two quality starts in that stretch. He has a 2.12 ERA across three September starts.
Sep 8 2021DeSclafani allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts in 4.1 innings versus Colorado on Wednesday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 31-year-old had little trouble for the first four innings, but he left with one out and the bases loaded in the fifth. Jarlin Garcia permitted two inherited runners to score, but San Francisco recovered later in the game to spare DeSclafani from the loss. The right-hander has a 3.33 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 137:40 K:BB in 146 innings this season. He's still been working on reduced pitch counts lately, throwing just 79 pitches (51 strikes) in Wednesday's contest. He lines up for a home start versus San Diego next week.
Sep 3 2021DeSclafani got a no-decision in Friday's 3-2 win over the Dodgers, allowing two hits and three walks with five strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After working around a two-out two-on situation in the first inning, DeSclafani avoided any hiccups in submitting six strong innings. Despite needing just 84 pitches to navigate the six frames, manager Gabe Kapler opted to pull the 31-year-old as San Francisco was protecting a slim 1-0 lead. Los Angeles went on to score one in the ninth and erase DeSclafani's potential win. It was nice to see the righty back on track after failing to eclipse five innings in any of his previous five starts and he's scheduled to face Colorado early next week.
Sep 2 2021DeSclafani is scheduled to start Friday against the Dodgers, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There was some concern about DeSclafani's status after he left his last start early and walked off with a trainer, but manager Gabe Kapler said at the time DeSclafani's early exit was not injury-related, and it indeed turns out he will not miss a trip through the rotation. DeSclafani owns a quality 3.38 ERA on the season, but he has been hit hard by the Dodgers, who have tallied 22 runs and six homers over 21 innings against him this year.
Aug 29 2021Manager Gabe Kapler said DeSclafani (11-6), who took the loss Sunday against Atlanta, isn't dealing with any physical issues after exiting during the fourth inning, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The right-hander gave up three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and zero walks across three innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani received a visit from the athletic trainer before being pulled during the fourth inning, but his early departure was apparently a strategic decision to piggyback him with reliever Sammy Long, per Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic. DeSclafani did manage a bit of ankle discomfort in his first start back from the injured list, but according to the skipper, that was unrelated to his departure. The 31-year-old tentatively lines up for his next turn through the rotation Friday against the Dodgers.
Aug 28 2021DeSclafani (ankle) will return from the injured list to start Sunday against Atlanta, Amy Gutierrez of the Giants' official site reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani exited his start against the Mets back on Aug. 18 with right ankle inflammation, but the injury evidently wasn't a major one. He'll be ready to go without a rehab assignment, having missed just a single turn in the rotation.
Aug 24 2021DeScalfani (ankle) played catch Tuesday and could be activated to start during the upcoming weekend series in Atlanta, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander exited his start last Wednesday against the Mets with right ankle discomfort, and he later landed on the injured list despite his MRI revealing no structural damage. The club has maintained that he'll be able to make his next start, so all signs point toward him taking the ball when he becomes eligible to come off the IL on Sunday in Atlanta.
Aug 22 2021The Giants placed DeSclafani on the 10-day injured list Sunday with right ankle inflammation, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: San Francisco was initially optimistic that DeSclafani wouldn't miss a turn through the rotation after he exited his most recent start Wednesday with ankle discomfort. After a follow-up MRI revealed nothing concerning, DeSclafani was cleared to played catch Saturday, and he was expected to complete a bullpen session Sunday as a final test of his health. However, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News relays that DeSclafani was only able to play catch and never stepped on the mound Sunday before heading to the dugout after meeting with manager Gabe Kapler and the Giants training staff. The team has yet to provide an update regarding whether DeSclafani suffered a setback, or if he's simply being moved to the IL as a precaution. Either way, the Giants will now require a replacement for DeSclafani in the rotation beginning with Tuesday's game against the Mets.
Aug 20 2021DeSclafani (ankle) will play catch Saturday and is expected to make his next start, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani's recent MRI revealed no structural damage, and he'll get a chance to test his ankle while playing catch Saturday. Although manager Gabe Kapler said that the right-hander will be monitored closely in the coming days, he isn't expected to miss his next turn through the rotation. Assuming he's cleared to pitch, DeSclafani tentatively lines up to take the mound on the road against the Mets on Tuesday.
Aug 18 2021The Giants announced that DeSclafani exited his start Wednesday against the Mets due to right ankle discomfort, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. He struck out a batter over 1.1 scoreless innings and gave up a hit and issued a walk before departing. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The initial diagnosis is a welcome one for DeSclafani, who isn't dealing with any apparent setback related to the right shoulder issue that forced him to miss one turn through the rotation earlier this month. That being said, the extent of his ankle issue isn't known, and DeSclafani could be subject to additional follow-up tests before the Giants have an idea whether he'll be fit to make his next start. He tentatively lines up for a rematch with the Mets at Citi Field next week.
Aug 13 2021DeSclafani (11-5) won Friday's 5-4 victory over Colorado, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts in five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his first start following a brief IL stint, DeSclafani limited the damage to a single run in both the second and third innings and departed with a 5-2 lead. Closer Jake McGee made things interesting in the ninth by surrendering two runs, but San Francisco was able to eek out the win. It was nice to see the 31-year-old return to the win column for the first time in over a month.
Aug 11 2021DeSclafani (shoulder) is scheduled to return from the injured list Friday to start against the Rockies, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani has been on the injured list since Aug. 4 due to right shoulder fatigue, but he'll return to action following a minimal absence. The right-hander has posted a 6.63 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in 19 innings across four starts since the All-Star break.
Aug 4 2021DeSclafani (shoulder) is only expected to miss one start, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Giants are simply managing the workload of DeSclafani, who threw only 33.2 innings in the shortened 2020 campaign. Assuming he misses just one start, the righty should return from the IL to start Aug. 13 at home against the Rockies.
Aug 3 2021DeSclafani allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts in 4.1 innings, taking a no-decision versus Arizona on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander has had a bit of trouble with the long ball lately, yielding eight homers in his last seven games after giving up the same number in his first 15 starts of the year. With this rough outing, DeSclafani saw his ERA tick up to 3.28 with a 1.07 WHIP and 118:33 K:BB through 126.1 innings. It's a little concerning to see him struggle so much versus the bottom-dwelling D-backs, but he'll try to get back on track in Milwaukee this weekend.
Jul 29 2021DeSclafani (10-5) allowed four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three over 2.2 innings in a loss to the Dodgers on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani started out well with three strikeouts over his first two frames but fell apart in the third. He allowed four hits on top of two walks to put the Giants in a 4-0 hole. He was replaced by Daniel Alvarez after his second walk but the damage had already been done. It ties for his shortest outing of the season, with both of those starts coming against the Dodgers. Despite his rough outing, DeSclafani still owns a strong 3.10 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 113:32 K:BB over 122 innings. He's lined up for a favorable matchup against the Diamondbacks next week.
Jul 23 2021DeSclafani allowed three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out seven in six innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Thursday's outing was DeSclafani's fourth straight quality start, but it was also the first time he took a no-decision since May 28. He's had his struggles versus the Dodgers this season, but he was able to limit the damage to an RBI single from Justin Turner and a two-run home run by Will Smith. The 31-year-old righty has a 2.87 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 110:30 K:BB across 119.1 innings this year. He's expected to make his next start in a rematch at home versus the Dodgers next week.
Jul 18 2021DeSclafani (10-4) allowed three earned runs on five hits while striking out four across six innings, taking the loss to the Cardinals on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani surrendered two home runs -- one by Tyler O'Neill and the other by Paul Goldschmidt -- that accounted for all three of his runs allowed. He didn't issue any walks in his quality performance, but the Giants could muster only one run of support. The 31-year-old is having the best season of his career in his first year with San Francisco, with a 2.78 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 103 punchouts in 113.1 innings. In his last eight starts, he has a 1.88 ERA and a 0.80 WHIP with six wins.
Jul 10 2021Desclafani tossed six shutout innings in Saturday's win over the Nationals, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Desclafani turned in his third quality start in his last four outings, limiting the Nationals to three singles and a Trea Turner walk en route to his career-high 10th victory. The 31-year-old Desclafani has been a terrific free-agent addition for the Giants, posting a 2.68 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with a 99:29 K:BB in 107.1 innings. He's lined up to open the second half at St. Louis on July 18.
Jul 5 2021DeSclafani (9-3) won Sunday's 5-2 game against Arizona, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in 8.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani was spotted an early lead and allowed a run apiece in the seventh and ninth before being removed with two outs and a runner on first in the final frame. Manager Gabe Kapler left him in for 107 pitches which ties his season high, as he came just short of completing his third game of the season.
Jun 28 2021DeSclafani (8-3) took the 3-2 loss at the hands of the Dodgers on Monday, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks with six strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani calmed down after allowing back-to-back solo shots to Mookie Betts and Max Muncy in the bottom of the first to allow only one more run, but the three runs proved to much for San Francisco to overcome. This was the right hander's first loss in over a month, which also came against Los Angeles, and he's now permitted three runs or less in six straight starts.
Jun 22 2021DeSclafani (8-2) earned the win over the Angels on Tuesday, pitching seven scoreless innings during which he allowed three hits and two walks whiles striking out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was dominant in the outing, taking an early 5-0 lead and preventing Los Angeles from mounting any hint of a comeback. He tied his season high with strikeouts while inducing 16 swings-and-misses across 97 total pitches. After a pair of subpar outings in late May, DeSclafani has won each of his four starts in June, giving up a combined three earned runs over 27 innings. He'll carry a strong 2.77 ERA into his next start, which is likely to come on the road against the Dodgers early next week.
Jun 17 2021DeSclafani (7-2) earned the win Wednesday against Arizona after giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk while fanning five across five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani was coming off his second shutout of the season and while he wasn't able to repeat that performance, he did enough to earn the win -- although he also received great support from the offense. The right-hander has come out on top in each of his last three decisions and owns an excellent, but probably unsustainable, 1.35 ERA and 0.65 WHIP in three starts this month. He's slated to make his next start against the Angels on the road next week.
Jun 11 2021DeSclafani (6-2) tossed a two-hit shutout Friday against the Nationals, striking out eight and walking one en route to the win. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He got some help from his defense, as Mike Tauchman took away a home run from Juan Soto, but DeSclafani was nonetheless fantastic. He needed just 103 pitches to log the complete game shutout. Save for one blowup start against the Dodgers where he gave up 10 earned runs in 2.2 innings, DeSclafani has been excellent all season. This was his second shutout of the year and seventh quality start. He projects to start next week at home against Arizona.
Jun 10 2021DeScalafani won't start as scheduled Thursday against the Nationals since the game was postponed due to inclement weather. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Thursday's contest will be made up via a doubleheader Saturday. DeSclafani will start Friday, while Kevin Gausman will be pushed back to start one of the games in Saturday's twin bill, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
Jun 4 2021DeSclafani (5-2) earned the win Thursday against the Cubs after tossing six innings of two-run ball, allowing four hits while fanning four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani has bounced back from an ugly outing against the Dodgers on May 23 -- where he allowed 10 runs in just 2.2 innings -- with back-to-back two-run outings, though it must be said this has been just his third quality start since the beginning of May. He owns a 5.15 ERA over his last seven starts.
May 28 2021DeSclafani took a no-decision Friday against Los Angeles, pitching 4.2 innings and allowing two runs on five hits and four walks with strikeouts in ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani allowed a solo home run to Matt Beaty in the second and another run in the fifth before being removed with two on and two out in the same inning. It was a nice rebound from last start's 10-run implosion and he's allowed no more than three runs in any of his other 10 starts.
May 24 2021DeSclafani (4-2) took the loss Sunday against the Dodgers after giving up 10 runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out three batters over 2.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani gave up runs in the second and third innings, however, most of the damage was done in the third when the Dodgers pieced together seven runs on five hits, including a grand slam by Gavin Lux to make it a 10-0 ballgame. Sunday was by far the worst performance of the season for the 31-year-old right-hander as his ERA shot up to 3.54 and it was the second time all year he's failed to last five innings. He'll look to redeem himself over the weekend against the Dodgers again.
May 18 2021DeSclafani (4-1) earned the win Wednesday over the Reds after giving up one run on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 31-year-old surrendered a leadoff homer to Jesse Winker to open the contest but quickly settled down and blanked his former team for the rest of his outing. DeSclafani has been impressive this season with a 2.03 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 48:13 K:BB across 54.1 innings and lines up to pitch against the Dodgers on Sunday.
May 14 2021DeSclafani (3-1) pitched five shutout innings, allowing a hit and a walk with five strikeouts to earn the win Thursday versus Pittsburgh. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani was effective but only threw 76 pitches (49 strikes) in the outing. After the game, manager Gabe Kapler reported DeSclafani wasn't feeling 100 percent, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports. Kapler added there's no long-term concern, which should clear DeSclafani to make his next start next week in Cincinnati. The right-hander has a 2.14 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 41:11 K:BB across 46.1 innings.
May 7 2021DeSclafani pitched 5.1 innings against San Diego on Friday, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out three. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The start was subpar by DeSclafani's standards this season -- he entered the contest having tossed four quality starts in six outings -- but the right-hander was still able to keep San Francisco in the game. DeSclafani kept the Giants off the scoreboard until the sixth inning but was charged with three earned runs in that frame after giving up a single, home run and double. The hurler will carry a 2.40 ERA and 36:10 K:BB across 41.1 innings into his next start, tentatively scheduled to take place during next week's series at Pittsburgh.
May 1 2021DeSclafani (2-1) took the loss against San Diego on Saturday, hurling six innings and allowing three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani took his first loss of the season in the contest, but he still managed to earn his fourth quality start. The right-hander was burned by a Manny Machado three-run homer in the first inning but went unscored upon over the following five frames while retiring the final six batters he faced. After finishing with an ugly 7.22 ERA across 33.2 innings last season, DeSclafani has been among the league's most effective starting pitchers in 2021, compiling a 2.00 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 33:9 K:BB over 36 frames. He's projected to match up with the Padres again during next weekend's series in San Francisco.
Apr 27 2021DeSclafani (2-0) fired a complete-game three-hit shutout in a 12-0 win over the Rockies on Monday. He walked one batter and struck out a season-high nine in the effort. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani's best performance in recent memory came on a night when the Giants piled on 12 runs. The 31-year-old didn't let his guard down despite having a 9-0 lead after two innings and went on to become the first Giants pitcher to throw a shutout in 100 pitches or fewer since Madison Bumgarner did it in 2014. The only hits he allowed were singles, and his nine strikeouts were the most he's had in a start since July 21, 2019. DeSclafani has had a remarkable beginning in a Giants uniform, as he now owns a 1.50 ERA and 30:7 K:BB over 30 innings to begin the year. He'll need to remain at the top of his game in a road matchup against the surging Padres on Sunday.
Apr 21 2021DeSclafani allowed three runs on five hits and two walks over four innings during Wednesday's 6-5 loss at Philadelphia. He had five strikeouts and didn't factor in the decison. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old gave up two runs across his first three starts of the season, but Mickey Moniak took him deep with a three-run homer Wednesday. DeSclafani still has a 2.14 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 21:6 K:BB through 21 innings this season, and he'll attempt to get back on track Monday versus the Rockies.
Apr 16 2021DeSclafani earned one run on four hits while fanning four across six innings Friday against the Marlins. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani has recorded back-to-back quality starts and has looked impressive so far, allowing one or fewer runs in each of his first three outings of the campaign and posting a 16:4 K:BB through 17 innings. The 30-year-old right-hander will try to keep things going when he takes the mound next week at Philadelphia.
Apr 11 2021DeSclafani (1-0) was sharp as he kept the Rockies scoreless. He allowed three hits and a walk while striking out eight over six innings in Sunday's win over the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The righty put together another strong performance, fanning eight and only walking one. The 30-year-old threw 64 of his 94 pitches for strikes and has allowed only one run in eleven innings of work. Desclafani is scheduled for his next start on Saturday against the Marlins.
Apr 6 2021DeSclafani allowed one run on four hits and three walks while striking out four over five innings of work. He did not end up factoring into the decision in an eventual 3-2 win over the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani allowed his only run of the evening in the second inning after Jurickson Profar got on, stole second and was eventually driven home on a hard single to center by Victor Caratini. The 30-year-old ran into a bit of trouble in the fourth and fifth frames but was able to escape both times, including ending his night by striking out Tommy Pham and stranding runners on second and third. DeSclafani still struggled a bit with walks in this one, which is noteworthy because he's coming off a career-worst 10.3 percent walk rate in 2020. He'll look to pick up his first win as a Giant when the Rockies come to town April 11.
Mar 27 2021DeSclafani appears set to begin the season as San Francisco's No. 4 starter, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Gabe Kapler named the first three starters of the season (Kevin Gausman, Johnny Cueto, Logan Webb) with DeSclafani likely then set as the fourth starter and Aaron Sanchez as the fifth starter. DeSclafani has a 2.79 ERA (3 ER in 9.2 IP) with 12 strikeouts and three walks this spring.
Dec 16 2020DeSclafani signed a one-year, $6 million contract with the Giants on Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani should land a spot in the Giants' rotation in 2021 after spending the past five seasons in Cincinnati. The right-hander struggled last season, posting a 7.22 ERA and 1.69 WHIP over 33.2 innings, and he wasn't included on the Reds' roster for the NL Wild Card Series. DeSclafani has been effective as a starter in past seasons, and he'll attempt to return to form in San Francisco.
Sep 30 2020DeSclafani did not make the Reds' roster for the NL Wild Card Series. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: If he had made the roster, he would have only been used as a mop-up man out of the bullpen. DeSclafani has a 10.72 ERA and 2.25 WHIP over his last 22.2 innings.
Sep 14 2020DeSclafani gave up four runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out seven over 4.2 innings during Game 2 of Monday's doubleheader against Pittsburgh. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani surrendered a run in the first, one in the fourth and two in the fifth, but his team would rally for three runs in the fifth, ultimately resulting in a 9-4 victory. He struggled to work ahead in the count, throwing first-pitch strikes to just 12 of the 22 batters he faced. DeSclafani owns an ugly 7.28 ERA and 1.75 WHIP with a 23:15 K:BB over 29.2 frames this year.
Sep 13 2020DeSclafani is scheduled to start the second game of Monday's doubleheader with the Pirates, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds bypassed DeSclafani for a start this past weekend in favor of Tejay Antone, but the former will re-enter the rotation as Cincinnati kicks off its four-game series with Pittsburgh with a twin bill. Given that the Reds moved Sonny Gray (back) to the 10-day injured list Sunday, DeSclafani should be in good position to stick in the rotation when Cincinnati pares its starting staff back down to five men beginning Wednesday. DeSclafani hasn't lived up to the sleeper potential he held heading into fantasy drafts, posting a 7.20 ERA and 1.76 WHIP through six starts.
Sep 11 2020DeSclafani is not scheduled to start this weekend against the Cardinals, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old hasn't completed five innings during a start since Aug. 8 and has surrendered 20 runs over those four outings, and he won't be taking the mound this weekend in St. Louis. Tejay Antone will receive another start in his place for the Reds, though DeSclafani could still start during Monday's doubleheader against the Pirates.
Sep 6 2020DeSclafani didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 6-2 win over the Pirates, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks over four-plus innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander appeared headed for his second win of the season after a four-run third inning by the Reds, but after DeSclafani walked Bryan Reynolds to lead off the fifth he got the hook and fell short of qualifying. DeSclafani threw 83 pitches (49 strikes) in this one but hasn't been able to complete five innings in any of his last four appearances. He'll carry a 7.20 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 16:14 K:BB through 25 IP into his next outing Friday in St. Louis.
Aug 31 2020DeSclafani (1-2) took the loss Monday as the Reds fell 7-5 to the Cardinals, surrendering seven runs on seven hits and four walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander had no feel for the strike zone after returning from the paternity list over the weekend, throwing only 48 of 92 pitches for strikes. When he did get the ball over the plate, bad things tended to happen -- DeSclafani was scored upon in all four of his frames, and his last pitch left the yard for a grand slam. The disastrous outing inflated his ERA by two whole runs, and he'll take a rough 7.71 mark into his next start Saturday in Pittsburgh.
Aug 28 2020DeSclafani was activated from the paternity list Friday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old was placed on the paternity list Tuesday, but he'll rejoin the team for the weekend after spending some time with his family. DeSclafani could take the mound during Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Cubs.
Aug 25 2020DeSclafani was placed on the paternity list Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He can miss no more than three games on the paternity list, so he will be able to return to the team in time for his scheduled start Friday against the Cubs.
Aug 21 2020DeSclafani allowed two runs on three hits and four walks over 4.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Cardinals on Friday. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It wasn't a spectacular outing for DeSclafani -- the four walks were a season-high for the righty -- but he left the Reds in a good position. A pinch-hit grand slam from Matt Davidson took DeSclafani off the hook. He's posted a 5.71 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 11 strikeouts in 17.1 innings. The 30-year-old lines up to face the Brewers on the road Thursday.
Aug 13 2020DeSclafani (1-1) allowed nine earned runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out one across two innings to take the loss Thursday against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani surrendered two solo home runs in the first inning, but really came unraveled in the second frame. He allowed nine of the first ten batters he faced to reach base, including a leadoff home run to Gregory Polanco. After the game, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that DeSclafani was tipping his pitches. DeSclafani had yet to allow an earned run across 11 innings this season prior to this outing, so he'll look to get on track on his next turn through the rotation, currently projected to come Wednesday at Kansas City.
Aug 8 2020DeSclafani (1-0) allowed two hits and one walk over six scoreless innings in a win over the Brewers on Saturday. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After throwing 64 pitches last weekend in his return from a right teres major strain, DeSclafani built up to 88 pitches Saturday. The results were stellar once again -- DeSclafani has not allowed a run through 11 innings -- and in fact this ranks as a top-25 SP performance by Game Score this season. He lines up for a favorable home matchup against Pittsburgh next week.
Aug 2 2020DeSclafani allowed three hits over five scoreless innings in a no-decision against the Tigers in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. He struck out two and did not issue a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A right teres major strain put DeSclafani on the IL to begin the season. He showed very little rust in his return, working around a leadoff triple in the third inning and completing five frames on just 64 pitches. It was not the most dominant performance in terms of swinging strikes (six), but the right-hander averaged a strikeout per inning last season and the whiffs should come once he's fully up to speed. DeSclafani lines up to pitch in Milwaukee next weekend.
Aug 1 2020DeSclafani (shoulder) will start Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Tigers, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old opened the season on the injured list with a mild right teres major strain, but it won't end up costing him too much of the season. DeSclafani made 31 starts for the Reds last season and had a 3.89 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 167:49 K:BB over 166.2 innings.
Jul 30 2020DeSclafani (shoulder) will start Saturday's game against the Tigers, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani was placed on the injured list with a mild right teres major strain just before the season, but he progressed through his recovery quickly and will take the place of Wade Miley (groin) in the rotation since the latter is slated to land on the injured list Friday. DeSclafani pitched four innings in his final appearance in camp, but it's unclear whether he'll be at full strength in his first start back.
Jul 27 2020DeSclafani (right teres major strain) has resumed throwing already and is on pace to return after missing only one start, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Tyler Mahle will replace DeSclafani against the Cubs on Tuesday night. His next turn is scheduled for Sunday against the Tigers. Wade Miley had a disastrous start Monday against the Cubs, though, so the Reds to consider that spot as a possibility as well.
Jul 23 2020DeSclafani was placed on the injured list Thursday with a mild right teres major strain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This is a tough break for DeSclafani, who was on track to start the fifth game of the season for Cincinnati. Per Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer, the injury isn't thought to be anything overly serious, and the right-hander could return after missing just one start. Tyler Mahle will likely take his place in the rotation for the time being.
Jul 15 2020DeSclafani threw four innings in Monday's scrimmage and all of the Reds five starters have worked at least three innings in one scrimmage so far, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds appear confident that they'll be at least close to full capacity by Opening Day. DeSclafani will go fifth in the Reds' rotation, meaning his first start will come on Tuesday July 28 against the Cubs, followed by a Sunday start in Detroit on August 1 if everything goes to plan.
Mar 27 2020DeSclafani pitched in two official spring training games (with his other work coming in simulated games), allowing just one earned run over six innings, stringing out four while allowing three hits and a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Just making it to the Opening Day bell has been a challenge some years for DeSclafani, but he made it through 2019 unscathed. The Reds are hoping for continued health and progress against left-handed hitters.
Feb 23 2020After overhauling his delivery last season, DeSclafani spent this offseason fine-tuning that more efficient delivery, with a specific emphasis on his curveball, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The curveball is the key to improving DeSclafani's performance against left-handers. Last season, the hurler allowed a .795 OPS to left-handers as opposed to a .638 OPS against right-handers. That's actually a considerable improvement over 2018, when lefties had a .917 OPS against him, and that improvement can largely be chalked up to his curveball.
Jan 10 2020DeSclafani agreed to a one-year, $5.975 million deal with the Reds, avoiding arbitration, freelance baseball writer Robert Murray reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This is his third and final year as an arbitration-eligible player before hitting the open market. He gets a sizable raise over the $2.13 million he was awarded last offseason.
Sep 27 2019DeSclafani allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits with one walk and five strikeouts across five innings of relief during a no-decision against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Michael Lorenzen started, but DeSclafani entered after two scoreless frames. Although he didn't pitch great, DeSclafani was in line for the win after the Reds took the lead in the eighth, but the Pirates came back in the ninth to force the 29-year-old to settle for a no-decision. He ends the year 9-9 with a 3.89 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 167 strikeouts in 166.2 innings.
Sep 22 2019DeSclafani allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with one walk and seven strikeouts across six innings during a no-decision against the Mets on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander struggled with tossing up homers early this season, but he's solved that problem lately and been pitching much better. He's allowed only three home runs over his last six outings, which has resulted in a 2.08 ERA during that stretch. Overall, DeSclafani is 9-9 with a 3.84 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 162 strikeouts in 161.2 innings this season. He will make his last start of the year at the Pirates on Friday.
Sep 14 2019DeSclafani (9-9) shined Saturday, allowing just one run on one hit and striking out five over seven innings, but he took the loss versus the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Only Nick Ahmed got on base versus DeSclafani, but he did so with a triple. Jarrod Dyson's sacrifice fly was enough to tag DeSclafani with a tough loss. The right-hander now owns a 3.93 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with a career-high 155 strikeouts over 155.2 innings this year. DeSclafani will likely start Friday's series opener against the Mets.
Sep 8 2019DeSclafani gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out three in six innings Sunday against the Diamondbacks. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DeSclafani left the game on the hook for the loss, but Cincinnati's bats came through over the final three innings and the Reds won 4-3. His next start comes Saturday against this same Diamondbacks lineup, only this time it will be a road game in Arizona.
Sep 2 2019DeSclafani (9-8) allowed four runs on three hits with two walks and eight strikeouts across seven innings while taking a loss against the Phillies on Monday.

He was missing a little bit in the middle of the plate with some of his pitches,\" manager David Bell said of DeSclafani. \"Could he have gone back out and thrown two scoreless innings? Yeah, we believe in him that much. That was the decision I felt had to be made there. We had a fully rested bullpen.\"Subscribe now<\/a> to instantly reveal our take on this news.

Jul 21 2018DeSclafani (4-3) took the loss Saturday as the Reds fell 6-2 to the Pirates, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks over 4.1 innings while striking out six.The punchouts were encouraging, but four of the six hits DeSclafani gave up went for extra bases -- including two solo shots by Corey Dickerson. The right-hander will carry a 5.40 ERA into his next outing Thursday at home against the Phillies.
Jul 15 2018DeSclafani (4-2) tossed 3.1 innings Sunday, allowing six runs on five hits and a walk in the 6-4 loss to St. Louis. He struck out three and gave up two home runs.Matt Carpenter took DeSclafani deep for a leadoff shot before Dexter Fowler added another solo homer in the second inning. DeSclafani fell apart in the fourth, allowing a couple hits, a walk and a hit batter before being lifted from the contest. His ERA shot up to 5.32 after the rough outing, but he still possesses a decent 35:13 K:BB in 44 innings. The 28-year-old will take on the Cardinals again next Tuesday at home.
Jul 9 2018DeSclafani (4-1) tossed seven one-run innings to earn the win Monday against the Indians, allowing five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.DeSclafani wasn't especially dominant in any respect, but he induced plenty of weak contact and benefited from a clean defensive performance behind him. His only real mistake came on a solo home run from Yonder Alonso in the fourth inning, but he allowed just one other runner past first base on the evening. DeSclafani's gem comes as a bit of a surprise after he'd allowed nine earned runs across 11.2 innings in his last two starts, but it nonetheless lowered his ERA to a respectable 4.43 heading into this weekend's matchup with the Cardinals.
Jul 3 2018DeSclafani gave up five runs on six hits and one walk while striking out five over 5.1 innings against the White Sox on Tuesday. He did not factor in the decision. The two rebuilding clubs combined to score 20 runs in this one, so neither starter factored in the decision. DeSclafani and his counterpart, Lucas Giolito, failed to prevent runs at acceptable clips, but the Reds' hurler was the better starter by a slight margin. Thursday's off day may allow DeSclafani to get a two-start week next week, with the first start coming Monday in Cleveland and the second coming in St. Louis.
Jun 28 2018DeSclafani allowed four earned runs on five hits and a walk while striking out six across 6.1 innings Thursday against the Brewers. He did not factor into the decision.DeSclafani pitched fairly well, with the main blemish of his line being a two-run home run by Jesus Aguilar. Otherwise, he did not allow an extra-base hit, and his two other earned runs came from Amir Garrett's failure to strand inherited runners. While DeSclafani's 4.45 ERA and 1.27 WHIP aren't particularly inspiring, he has has now completed 6.1 innings in each of his past two starts as he continues to work back from an oblique injury that cost him the first two months of his season. To improve those ratio stats, he'll need to limit the longball, as he has allowed 1.9 HR/9 in 28.1 innings this season.
Jun 23 2018DeSclafani (3-1) allowed two earned runs on three hits and four walks while striking out three across 6.1 innings to earn the win Saturday against the Cubs.DeSclafani managed his longest outing of the season -- in terms of both number of pitches and outs recorded -- against the dangerous Cubs lineup. However, he wasn't especially deceptive as he generated only three strikeouts and allowed two home runs. The long ball has emerged as a concern as he has now allowed five home runs in 22 innings pitched. However, he is trending in the correct direction as he has seen improved results in each of his starts since coming off the disabled list on June 5.
Jun 18 2018DeSclafani (2-1) allowed two runs on three hits and one walk across 5.2 innings en route to a win Sunday against the Pirates. He struck out four.DeSclafani recorded his longest outing since returning and limited baserunners to great effect, with his only two real mistakes coming on solo home runs in the second and fifth innings. He threw an impressive 68 percent of his pitches for strikes and fired in first-pitch strikes to 16 of 21 batters. DeSclafani struggled in his first outing of the season, but he's gotten progressively better with each start and owns a solid 15:4 K:BB over 15.2 total innings. He'll look to continue rounding into form Saturday against the Cubs.
Jun 10 2018DeSclafani (1-1) allowed three runs (two earned) on 10 hits and two walks while striking out six across five innings as he picked up the win Sunday against the Cardinals.St. Louis got to DeSclafani for two runs in the third, but Cincinnati answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning, followed by four more in the fourth to give their starter a 5-2 lead. The Reds would ultimately end up taking the series finale, 6-3. DeSclafani was able to bounce back in his second start of the 2018 campaign after allowing four runs through five innings in his first big-league outing since September of 2016. He sits with a 5.40 ERA and 11:3 K:BB over 10 innings this season.
Jun 5 2018DeSclafani (oblique) was activated from the disabled list and will start Tuesday against the Rockies, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic Cincinnati reports. As expected, DeSclafani is set to make his 2018 big-league debut after completing his minor-league rehab assignment with no issues. The 28-year-old allowed 10 runs across 19.1 innings in four starts between Double-A Pensacola and Triple-A Louisville during his rehab assignment. DeSclafani posted a solid 3.28 ERA across 20 starts for the Reds in 2016, but injuries have kept him from pitching in the majors since then, so it's tough to know what to expect from the righty in his return.
Jun 5 2018DeSclafani (0-1) allowed four runs on six hits and a walk while striking out five over five innings in Tuesday's loss to the Rockies.DeSclafani ran into trouble early in his first major-league start since Sept. 28, 2016. The Rockies put up two runs in the first inning on three base hits before Chris Iannetta slugged a two-run homer in the second inning to give his club a 4-0 lead. DeSclafani settled in after that and faced the minimum over the next three frames before being removed from the contest after throwing 91 pitches (55 for strikes). His next start projects to come Sunday against the Cardinals.
Jun 3 2018DeSclafani (oblique) will be activated from the 60-day disabled list and start Tuesday's game against the Rockies, Reds broadcaster Jim Day reports.DeSclafani is set to make his season debut after wrapping up his fourth minor-league rehab start Wednesday. The righty allowed 10 runs over 19.1 innings between Double-A Pensacola and Triple-A Louisville during his assignment. The injury-plagued DeSclafani has not appeared in a major-league contest since September of 2016. He posted a 3.28 ERA in his last full season.
Jun 3 2018DeSclafani (oblique) will be activated from the 60-day disabled list and start Tuesday's game against the Rockies, John Fay of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.DeSclafani is set to make his season debut after wrapping up his fourth minor-league rehab start Wednesday. The righty allowed 10 runs over 19.1 innings between Double-A Pensacola and Triple-A Louisville during his assignment. The injury-plagued DeSclafani has not appeared in a major-league contest since Sept. 28, 2016. He posted a 3.28 ERA in his last full season in the big leagues.
May 31 2018DeSclafani covered 6.1 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk Wednesday in his rehab start for Triple-A Louisville. He struck out two batters in the outing.DeSclafani has struggled to keep the ball in the yard over his last two rehab starts -- he allowed two home runs Wednesday and three in his previous turn -- but he's otherwise looked solid while working his way back from an oblique strain that first surfaced in March. The right-hander pushed his pitch count up to 95 on Wednesday, so it appears he's ready to handle a starter's workload with the big club if the Reds are comfortable bringing him off the 60-day disabled list. Given that the Reds already cleared a spot in their rotation by demoting Homer Bailey to the bullpen, it seems likely DeSclafani is being tabbed for the opening. DeSclafani could be activated from the DL and start as soon as Tuesday against the Rockies, which would mark the 28-year-old's first appearance with the big club since 2016.
May 26 2018DeSclafani (oblique) gave up six runs on eight hits over five innings for Triple-A Louisville in a rehab assignment outing Friday. He'll probably need at least one more outing before getting activated from the DL, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports. The good news for DeSclafani is that he was able to throw 93 pitches without a setback, and he struck out eight batters, walking just one. The Reds have plenty of alternatives to remove from the rotation to make room for him, too - Sal Romano has struggled recently, as has Tyler Mahle. Moreover, they could opt to move Homer Bailey and his 6.21 ERA to the bullpen, though that would take some courage, given his contract.
May 23 2018DeSclafani (oblique) will make his next rehab start Friday for Triple-A Louisville, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. He notched a 2.25 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 12 strikeouts in eight innings over two rehab starts with Double-A Pensacola, and now that he is moving his rehab to Triple-A, it would seem that joining the big-league rotation could be right around the corner. It is unclear who DeSclafani will displace from the Reds' rotation, but it would make sense for him to slot in on May 30 in Arizona, bumping Sal Romano to the bullpen or to the rotation at Triple-A.
May 14 2018Desclafani (oblique) struck out four over three perfect innings Monday in his first rehab appearance for Double-A Pensacola, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic Cincinnati reports.DeSclafani hasn't pitched in a major league game since 2016 due to a UCL injury in 2017 and an oblique injury to open the 2018 season. He managed a 3.28 ERA in 123.1 innings for the Reds in 2016, and at just 28, the rebuilding Reds would love to see if they still have a piece they can use to build for the future in DeSclafani. He's targeting a return in either late May or early June.
May 11 2018DeSclafani (oblique) is set to begin a minor-league rehab assignment at Double-A Pensacola on Monday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. After throwing 29 pitches in a bullpen session last Friday, DeSclafani is now ready to pitch in the minors leagues. The 28-year-old hasn't pitched in the majors in over a year and a half, and he is ineligible to return until May 28. Once he's back with the big-league club, DeSclafani will look to build on a 2016 campaign that saw him post a 105:30 K:BB and 3.28 ERA across 20 starts.
May 5 2018DeSclafani (oblique) threw 29 pitches in a bullpen session Friday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.DeSclafani has been out all year with an oblique strain and is ineligible to return before May 28. When he last appeared in the big leagues in 2016, the righty tossed 123.1 innings with a 3.28 ERA. The struggling Reds could certainly use another reliable arm, though it's hard to say how good DeSclafani will be after missing almost a year and a half.
Apr 19 2018DeSclafani was scheduled to throw off a mound Wednesday at extended spring training, marking his first bullpen session since straining his left oblique in early March, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. It sounds as though DeSclafani has fully healed from the injury after remaining idle for more than a month, but the extended break will essentially force him to go through spring training all over again. DeSclafani will need to complete multiple bullpen sessions before gaining clearance to face hitters and then begin what will likely be a multi-start rehab assignment in the minors. If DeSclafani experiences no setbacks as he builds back up to a starter's workload, he could come off the 60-day disabled list when or shortly after he's first eligible to return May 28.
Mar 29 2018DeSclafani (oblique) was placed on the 60-day DL.He has a left oblique strain and last time DeSclafani dealt with that injuries he ended up needing more time to recover than the typical pitcher. It's possible he returns in late May, but it wouldn't be surprising if his absence stretched into June.
Mar 26 2018DeSclafani (oblique) is now pain-free but doesn't project to return until May or even June, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports. This is similar to the last time that DeSclafani was out with a strained oblique - his return took longer than expected and longer than many pitchers with similar injuries.
Mar 25 2018DeSclafani (oblique) is slated to open the season the disabled list, John Fay of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.DeSclafani hasn't pitched since coming out of his March 9 Cactus League start with a strained left oblique, so his move to the DL isn't a surprising one. There remains no definitive timetable for when DeSclafani will resume throwing, so there's a good chance he misses multiple turns through the Cincinnati rotation.
Mar 11 2018DeSclafani was diagnosed with an oblique strain Sunday, John Fay of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.According to manager Bryan Price, DeSclafani suffered the injury during his Friday start against the Rangers in which he tossed three scoreless innings of one-hit ball. The righty missed an extended period of time during the 2016 season with a similar injury, so this setback could certainly affect DeSclafani's early-season availability. A recovery timeline has not been revealed, so we'll simply have to wait and see how soon the 27-year-old will be able to return to the mound. It's an unfortunate blow for a pitcher who's experience his fair shares of injuries over the past couple of seasons.
Mar 10 2018DeSclafani threw three scoreless innings Friday against the Rangers, inducing seven ground balls while retiring eight of his final nine batters, including a big double play in the first inning, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports. "I was able to kind of catch my groove," DeSclafani said. "I was throwing a lot of strikes and they were just hitting it on the ground. I had some quick innings after I got that double play. I thought it was about to be a long inning for a second [in the first]. It ended up turning out great."DeSclafani is getting closer to being ready for the start of the season. This was especially encouraging after his previous outing went poorly.
Mar 5 2018DeSclafani gave up three earned runs on five hits over two innings Sunday against the Royals. Though he was hit hard in the game, DeSclafani wasn't discouraged by the results because he remained healthy, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.DeSclafani is still optimistic merely because he made it through the outing without any physical setbacks. "I mean it when I say it - I'm really happy that I'm healthy. Obviously, today didn't go the way I wanted it to," he said. "I'm walking out of here and my arm is feeling great. I felt like I was throwing a lot of strikes. It probably could have been more quality strikes. They put the barrel on the ball and I didn't make good pitches. Some of them found holes. Some of them were hit hard. But that's going to happen. This is my second start out of 17 months I was down when I didn't pitch against big league hitters."
Feb 27 2018DeSclafani threw two shutout innings Tuesday in his spring training debut, striking out two while allowing two bloop hits. DeSclafani was encouraged by the outing afterward, MLB.com's Owen Perkins reports. "It felt good to be in a big league Spring Training environment and just to throw my pitches and compete," DeSclafani said. "It's definitely been a while. There's a few balls I threw today that I was like, 'Dang, those look like good pitches,' but I guess I'm back with the big league strike zone instead of the instructional league strike zone."This was DeSclafani's first outing against major league hitters in any venue since Sept. 28, 2016, after he missed all of the 2017 season. This was a necessary but not yet sufficient step in his quest to earn an Opening Day rotation slot.
Feb 20 2018DeSclafani is expected to open the season in the Reds' starting rotation assuming he gets through spring training healthy, John Fay of Cincinnati.com reports. An injury-free camp definitely isn't a given for DeSclafani, as the 27-year-old missed all of the 2017 campaign with an elbow issue and sat out the first two months of 2016 due to an oblique injury. While he missed all of last season, DeScalafani made five starts in the Instructional League in October and is set to enter Catcus League action at full health following a normal offseason. He'll look to get through spring with no issues and reestablish himself as one of the Reds' top arms.
Jan 12 2018DeSclafani agreed to a one-year, $860,000 deal with the Reds on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. After logging just 6.2 innings in the minors and zero big-league innings last season due to an elbow injury, DeSclafani received one of the lower deals among first-year arbitration players. He reportedly threw all of his pitches in instructional league games in December, and figures to report to spring training fully ready to secure a rotation spot. DeSclafani has a career 3.99 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 341 MLB innings, and makes for a fine endgame option in deeper formats.
Dec 3 2017DeSclafani (elbow) said he threw all his pitches during instructional league games in Arizona and feels he'll be ready for the start of spring training, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.DeSclafani was limited to a pair of minor-league rehab appearances in 2017 while battling a UCL sprain in his right elbow last spring that never prevented him from toeing the rubber for the MLB club. He was shut down while rehabbing after experiencing tendinitis, but his strong showing during instructionals set the right-hander up for a normal offseason. The Reds are hopeful that DeSclafani, who is eligible for arbitration this winter, will reemerge as an anchor for the rotation in 2018.
Nov 3 2017DeSclafani (elbow) was removed from the 60-day DL on Friday. The right-hander missed the entire 2017 season with elbow problems, and was officially ruled out in late August after being diagnosed with elbow tendinitis just a few weeks prior. Looking ahead, the 27-year-old should be fully healthy and ready for action by the time spring training begins.
Aug 31 2017Reds manager Bryan Price suggested Wednesday that DeSclafani (elbow) isn't likely to come off the 60-day disabled list to pitch for the big club in September, Andy Call of MLB.com reports. "We have to get [DeSclafani] to the point where we have somewhat of an idea of a workload that can help make sure his elbow is in a good enough spot to go into the offseason," Price said. "We need to build up a body of work that builds confidence he is going to be able to get through this elbow issue."DeSclafani has been sidelined all season with elbow issues, with his most recent setback coming during his July 29 rehab start with Low-A Dayton. The right-hander was later diagnosed with elbow tendinitis and was cleared to resume a throwing program last week, but it doesn't sound like the non-contending Reds are eager to rush him back in the season's final month. After throwing a 20-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, Desclafani will pitch off the mound again Friday, before perhaps facing hitters during the upcoming week. If DeSclafani is able to avoid any further hiccups in the recovery process over the next few weeks, the Reds could allow him to pitch in some Arizona Fall League in attempt to have him get some innings under his belt heading into next spring.
Aug 22 2017DeSclafani (elbow) resumed a throwing program after a second opinion confirmed he was dealing with elbow tendinitis, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.DeSclafani is back on track after forearm discomfort briefly interrupted his rehab from a strained UCL. He'll need to build his pitch count back up, so a return to the Reds this season remains up in the air. A revised timetable for his possible return should become clearer once he's able to resume a rehab assignment.
Aug 4 2017An MRI on DeSclafani's elbow only revealed tendinitis and although surgery doesn't seem to be necessary, he'll receive a second opinion on the matter, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. It seems like "Disco" avoided any serious injury in this instance, but given how much he's dealt with already, the Reds will likely take the cautious approach with him and not rush him back into action. He had been ramping up his pitch count in various rehab games over the past week, but this will likely keep him out of action for a bit longer. A firmer timetable for his return should come forth once he's cleared to throw again.
Aug 4 2017DeSclafani (elbow) isn't expected to miss much time due to the forearm discomfort he experienced in his most recent rehab start, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The injury appears to be fairly minor, thankfully, and Buchanan adds that no further operations (including Tommy John surgery that's frequently associated with forearm tightness) are expected to heal this new issue. DeSclafani appears to be close to returning from the DL, although this setback likely pushes his return timetable into late August at the earliest.
Aug 3 2017DeSclafani (elbow) exited Thursday's rehab start with Low-A Dayton after recording just one out.DeSclafani was tagged for seven runs and was able to record just one out before meeting with the team trainer and ultimately exiting Thursday's minor-league rehab start in the top of the first inning. An update on the rehabbing pitcher's condition should become available following the game.
Aug 3 2017DeSclafani (elbow) exited Thursday's rehab start with Low-A Dayton with right forearm tightness, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.DeSclafani has been on the disabled list all season with a UCL sprain in his elbow, so the fact that he continues to be hampered by arm discomfort is certainly a cause for concern. It's unclear how much this ailment will set him back in his rehab, but more should be known following DeSclafani's scheduled examination with team doctors Friday.
Jul 30 2017DeSclafani (elbow) will make his next rehab start Thursday with Low-A Dayton.DeSclafani will stick around at Dayton for his second straight rehab start and third overall after an excellent outing with the affiliate Saturday, during which he covered four innings in 46 pitches and allowed no runs on two hits and no walks while striking out six. Following the outing, DeSclafani threw an additional 10-to-15 pitches in the bullpen to stretch out his arm, according to Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer. The right-hander will presumably raise his pitch count closer to 60 in his Thursday start before moving up to a higher-level affiliate for one or two additional outings prior to his activation from the 60-day disabled list. DeSclafani seems to be trending toward a mid-August return.
Jul 25 2017DeSclafani (elbow) made a rehab start with the Reds' rookie-level Arizona League club Sunday, tossing 2.1 innings and giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits and one walk. He struck out three batters. It was the first game action for DeSclafani since last September, as he was never able to toe the rubber in spring training after experiencing tenderness in his elbow that was later diagnosed as a UCL sprain. He tossed 47 pitches in the outing, with manager Bryan Price reporting that DeSclafani flashed a "good slider" and "good velocity," according to Ben Weinrib of MLB.com. Price noted that he's still hopeful the right-hander will be able to return from the 60-day disabled list in mid-to-late August, but before that happens, he'll need to raise his pitch count while completing several more rehab starts across multiple minor-league affiliates. DeSclafani is scheduled to make his next outing Saturday with Low-A Dayton, likely throwing 45 to 50 pitches.
Jul 17 2017DeSclafani (elbow) will throw a two-inning simulated game Tuesday at the Reds' spring training complex in Arizona, Zach Buchanan of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.Assuming the simulated work goes off without a hitch, DeSclafani, who has been sidelined since March with a strained right UCL, will cover three innings in his first rehab outing with the Reds' rookie-level Arizona team July 23. After that, DeSclafani would likely require a multi-start assignment at one of the Reds' full-season affiliates to build up his arm before potentially returning from the 60-day disabled list in early or mid-August. When healthy last season, DeSclafani was one of the Reds' top starters, submitting a 3.28 ERA and 105:30 K:BB over 123.1 innings.
Jul 8 2017DeSclafani (elbow) threw a 40-pitch bullpen session Friday that included all of his pitches, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. This was Disco's third bullpen workout since returning to baseball activities following a sprained UCL in spring training. He tested his full pitch mix -- curveball, slider, changeup and fastball -- from a mound for the first time in his rehab. He's still on track for a return to the beleaguered Reds staff sometime in August, though the rebuilding club may not push him much for the rest of the year, which may limit his short-term fantasy potential.
Jun 8 2017DeSclafani (elbow) is not expected to return to the club until August, Tom Groeschen of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The right-hander was cleared to resume throwing in late May but still hasn't done much otherwise after a UCL sprain put him on the disabled list. DeSclafani is looking less and less likely to deliver much late-season fantasy value, considering he may not be able to flash his full abilities until weeks after he returns. He may wind up being a name to remember in 2018 instead. Either way, fantasy players in deep leagues probably will want to at least add him for the off-chance he delivers something of note.
May 21 2017DeSclafani (elbow) played catch from 45-to-60 feet Sunday, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. It was the first time that DeSclafani had been able to throw since the Reds shelved him in spring training due to a UCL sprain. With the right-hander still in the very initial phase of the recovery process, he's likely more than a month away from rejoining the Reds rotation.
May 19 2017DeSclafani (elbow) has been cleared to begin throwing, John Fay of WCPO.com reports. He hasn't pitched since dealing with elbow tenderness at the beginning of spring training, so this is certainly a positive step for the 27-year-old. After posting a 3.28 ERA and 105 strikeouts over 20 starts with the Reds last season, DeSclafani will begin a gradual rehabilitation program with the long-term goal of returning in the second half of the regular season. Expect a firmer timetable to be established once he gets back into regular pitching activities.
May 3 2017DeSclafani (elbow) still hasn't fully healed and won't begin a throwing program for at least a couple more weeks, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports.DeSclafani almost certainly won't get back when first eligible on June 1st. Despite that, he's still upbeat about his rehab. "I'm feeling good. I'm making progress for sure," DeSclafani said. "I still have a few more weeks but my arm is feeling better. I'm definitely headed in the right direction. I'm excited about that. We're not going backwards."
Apr 15 2017DeSclafani (elbow) has not resumed throwing, wpco.com's John Fay reports.A sprained UCL caused the Reds to shut DeSclafani down for four weeks in mid-March. That timetable has now elapsed, and he still has not picked up a baseball. Thus, the 26-year-old's return most likely won't happen for a while, as he was placed on the 60-day disabled list April 5.
Apr 5 2017DeSclafani (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Wednesday. With Disco tabbed to miss the first month of the season at the minimum, the Reds opted to move him off the 40-man roster to make room for recently-acquired outfielder Tyler Goeddel. It's unclear if this move will impact DeSclafani's return date, but things should become clearer on that front as he progresses in his rehab program.
Apr 2 2017DeSclafani (elbow) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday.DeSclafani has been shut down for the past several weeks with a UCL sprain. Though he's been placed on the 10-day DL, the 26-year-old is expected to miss the first month of the season.
Mar 29 2017DeSclafani (elbow) underwent a platelet-rich plasma injection to try to speed up his healing process, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports.DeSclafani has been shut down from throwing but has started his rehab. At minimum he'll miss the first month of the season.
Mar 13 2017DeSclafani will be shut down for four weeks with a UCL sprain, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.DeSclafani was expected to miss his first turn in the rotation to start the season after the sore elbow delayed his spring debut, however an MRI revealed he is dealing with a sprained UCL and will be shut down for at least four weeks, which ultimately lands him on the DL for Opening Day. It's not ideal news for both parties, but the injury is not considered surgical and if the 26-year-old can avoid Tommy John surgery, it will be big. He'll be re-evaluated in a month, but for now, expect one of the young Cincinnati arms -- Cody Reed, Tim Adleman (shoulder), Amir Garrett and Robert Stephenson -- to compete for the vacated rotation spot.
Mar 12 2017DeSclafani has been scratched from his scheduled Cactus League start Monday with elbow tenderness and appears likely to open the season on the disabled list, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.DeSclafani was already on track to miss his first expected turn in the rotation to begin the regular season after the sore elbow had delayed his spring debut, and after he experienced renewed soreness following his most recent side session, a DL stint looks unavoidable. He's scheduled to undergo an MRI in the next couple of days, at which point the team should have a better idea of when the right-hander will be able to resume throwing. DeSclafani's likely absence for the start of the season could open up rotation spots for at least two of the Reds' four young hurlers -- Cody Reed, Tim Adleman (shoulder), Amir Garrett and Robert Stephenson -- bidding for starting roles with the big club this spring.
Mar 9 2017DeSclafani (elbow) is scheduled to make his first spring training start Monday, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. This presents good news for the right-hander, who has been throwing in the bullpen and still may do so before his outing. While he may not make a start during the first series of the regular season even if the rest of his exhibition work goes smoothly, he's on track to avoid missing much time. The right-hander teased a bit of a breakout season in 2016 and may take another step forward, though the commitment on draft day should include some caution considering the possibly disastrous nature of elbow woes.
Mar 8 2017DeSclafani (elbow) threw a side session Tuesday from a bullpen mound and will throw another one later this week before getting slotted for his first spring training start. The Reds have already stated that DeSclafani won't be ready for Opening Day, though they haven't yet committed to him beginning the year on the DL. In fact, it's been suggested that he could start the second regular season game. However, given the ability to back-date DL stints by having him pitch in minor league spring training games, and given the off-days present early in the season, it also wouldn't be a surprise if he had a brief DL stint.
Mar 5 2017DeSclafani (elbow) likely won't be ready to start on Opening Day, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.DeSclafani is tabbed as the Reds' top starter entering the 2017 season, but it's looking like he won't take the mound on Opening Day due to the elbow tenderness that he's been dealing with during spring camp. However, it is being reported that he could make his first start as early as the second regular season game, which is an encouraging sign.
Mar 2 2017DeSclafani (elbow) was given the OK to play catch after seeing Reds medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek, and the pitcher said he feels good, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. The right-hander, who'll turn 27 in April, was scratched from a recent spring start, though he said Thursday that he wasn't worried about the setback. Still, expect Cincinnati to take it easy working him back into the fold in the coming days. DeSclafani buzzed through 20 starts in 2016 with a 3.28 ERA and a 2.19 BB/9, which hinted at a huge ceiling, but he would make more fantasy noise if he can build on his career 7.44 K/9. Fantasy owners justifiably can take a shot on him in the late rounds of a mixed draft, as long as his health keeps improving.
Feb 27 2017DeSclafani has been scratched from his next scheduled start Tuesday due to tenderness in his elbow, C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.Desclafani apparently began experiencing tenderness after a recent batting practice session, and he should be considered day-to-day until the team says otherwise. For what it's worth, Reds' manager Bryan Price told the media Monday that he doesn't believe it's anything serious.
Sep 28 2016DeSclafani (9-5) finished his season with six innings of one-run ball against the Cardinals on Wednesday, allowing just six hits and two walks with three strikeouts. The third-year righty thus heads in to the offseason with new career bests in ERA (3.28) and WHIP (1.22) over 123.1 innings -- strong numbers for a guy whose April oblique injury ended up landing him on the 60-day DL. DeSclafani will make for a solid value pick in next year's drafts, especially if the Reds make some aggressive moves to improve their roster.
Sep 17 2016DeSclafani (8-4) gave up six runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks over four innings in Saturday's 10-4 loss to the Pirates in the opening game of a doubleheader. He struck out four. The righty's problems largely came in the first inning, when he gave up a two-RBI single to Andrew McCutchen, another run-scoring hit to Francisco Cervelli and a fielder's choice groundout to Alen Hanson that made the score 4-0. The four innings represented the 26-year-old righty's shortest stint on the mound since June 15, when he lasted just 2.2 innings versus the Braves, and Saturday's effort broke a streak of three-consecutive quality starts. DeSclafani will look to get back on track when he faces the Brewers next Friday.
Sep 11 2016DeSclafani will be skipped from his next scheduled start, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.DeSclafani has thrown the ball well during his recent outings. Over his last three games, DeSclafani has posted a 1.64 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP. However, he won't pitch the next time through Cincinnati's rotation, pushing his next start to September 18.
Sep 7 2016DeSclafani (8-3) pitched six innings Wednesday, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk while striking out seven and taking the loss against the Mets.DeSclafani pitched well overall Wednesday, but yielded a pair of long balls to Jose Reyes and Curtis Granderson, each of whom also hit home runs the day before against the Reds. DeSclafani has been the Reds' best starter this season, posting a 2.93 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 4.25 K:BB ratio over 17 starts. Those numbers are a terrific improvement over DeSclafani's first two major league seasons where he posted a 4.34 ERA over 36 starts. He'll look to get back in the win column against the Brewers on Monday.
Sep 3 2016DeSclafani didn't factor into the decision Friday versus the Cardinals, giving up two earned runs on six hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out three.DeSclafani followed up a complete-game gem against the D-backs in his last start with another strong performance, the third straight start in which he's lasted at least seven innings. The 26 year-old's troubles came down to two hitters, as Yadier Molina tagged him for a solo shot in the second, while Randal Grichuk repeated the feat in the fifth. He'll look to get back into the win column when he takes on the Pirates next Thursday.
Aug 27 2016DeSclafani was masterful in Saturday's win over the Diamondbacks, tossing a four-hit shutout with nine strikeouts and one walk. The right-hander's first career shutout also happened to be his first career complete game, and he set a season-high in punchouts as well. He efficiently needed just 108 pitches to go the distance, and lowered his ERA to a shiny 2.98 with this dominant performance. DeSclafani will next face the Cardinals at home on Saturday.
Aug 22 2016DeSclafani (7-2) allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk over seven innings while striking out six in Sunday's loss to the Dodgers. He won his first six decisions after coming off the DL in mid-June but DeSclafani has had a rougher go of things lately, posting a 4.37 ERA and 1.23 WHIP over his last six starts and 35 innings. His 35:10 K:BB over that stretch is still strong however, so he's hardly been a liability. The righty will face another tough test in his next start Saturday in hitter-friendly Arizona.
Aug 17 2016DeSclafani (7-1) pitched six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and no walks Tuesday. He struck out six in the victory over the Marlins.Dealt by the Marlins to the Reds at the 2014 Winter Meetings, DeSclafani picked up his 10th quality start and dealt a blow to his former team's wild card hopes on Tuesday. The right-hander got a scare when he twisted his left ankle while running the bases in the fourth inning. DeSclafani limped to the dugout, but was able to return and pitch two more scoreless frames to get back on track after losing his first game of 2016 in his previous outing. Sporting an impressive 3.10 ERA, the 26-year-old will take the hill Sunday against the Dodgers for his start.
Aug 10 2016DeSclafani (6-1) threw five innings of three-run ball Wednesday, allowing six hits and two walks while striking out five and earning the loss. The loss was DeSclafani's first of the season in 12 starts, and raised his ERA to 3.11. Despite the eight baserunners allowed, it was a pair of solo homers in the first and fourth that did most of the damage. Limiting the long ball has been a key to DeSclafani's success, as he only allowed five in 31 starts last season, and just four before Wednesday in 2016. Those numbers are especially impressive considering Great American Ballpark was the most home run friendly park in the MLB last year with a full 3.0 home runs per game. DeSclafani will look to keep the ball in the yard next time out at home against the Marlins on Tuesday.
Aug 6 2016DeSclafani didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 3-2 loss to the Pirates, surrendering only two earned runs on two hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out six.The 26-year-old righty put together yet another quality start, and has now accomplished the feat in nine of his 11 trips to the mound this season. DeSclafani endured some modest trouble with his control and issued multiple walks for the third straight start, but was otherwise solid across his six frames, giving up only a pair of sacrifices to Francisco Cervelli and Jody Mercer in the fifth. He'll look to keep his unblemished 6-0 record intact when he takes on the Cardinals next Wednesday.
Jul 30 2016DeSclafani (6-0) pitched six innings, allowing one run, four hits and two walks while striking out six Saturday against the Padres. He did not factor in the decision.Friday's no-decision makes up for the ugly win he received in his last outing when he allowed five runs in five innings. Regardless, DeSclafani continued his stellar season with his eighth quality start in 10 outings. The right-hander finished up July with a stellar 4-0 record and 37:6 K:BB in six starts (37.2 innings). He'll take an undefeated record and nifty 2.93 ERA into Pittsburgh for his next start Friday.
Jul 26 2016DeSclafani (6-0) allowed five runs on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts but still picked up the win Monday over the Giants. This was DeSclafani's first real cheap win, as he had thrown six consecutive quality starts entering Monday night. He was hurt by a pair of home runs, the first time all season he has allowed multiple homers in a start. DeSclafani still owns a solid 3.09 ERA supported by a slick 46:11 K:BB.
Jul 23 2016The Rangers reportedly are pursuing DeSclafani in advance of the trade deadline. As always, trade rumors at this time of the year should be taken with the appropriate grain of salt. The Reds haven't suggested DeSclafani is available or that they're even talking with the Rangers. But he's pitching well, he's young, and he's cost-controlled for four more years. Naturally he'd be attractive to a lot of teams.
Jul 20 2016DeSclafani (5-0) threw his sixth quality start in seven outings, allowing two runs on eight hits, struck out three and walked none in a 6-3 victory over the Braves on Wednesday. The right-hander hasn't given up more than three earned runs in any of his seven outings. He was a ground ball machine Wednesday, inducing 11 outs via the ground. He is 5-0 with a 2.50 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 40 strikeouts in 50.1 innings. His next start will be Monday against the Giants.
Jul 15 2016DeSclafani (4-0) allowed three runs on six hits while striking out eight over six innings to earn the win Friday against the Brewers.DeSclafani gave up single runs in the first, fifth and sixth innings, but the Brewers scored three runs after his departure to provide him with a 4-3 lead, helping him earn his fourth win of 2016. He's now fired five straight quality starts, and his ERA is at 2.55 to go along with a 1.25 WHIP. He'll make his next start Wednesday against the Braves.
Jul 6 2016DeSclafani (3-0) pitched six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out six in Wednesday's win against the Cubs.In his six outings since returning June 10 from a strained left oblique injury that occurred in spring training, DeSclafani is 3-0 with a 2.23 ERA. Over 36.1 innings this year, the 26-year-old has allowed 38 hits and three homers -- including one by Ben Zobrist on Wednesday -- with nine walks and 29 strikeouts. In five of the six games, the right-hander worked at least six innings, and in three of the starts, he worked at least into the seventh. DeSclafani won't remain on the wire in most leagues by the time the second half of 2016 begins, if he's even still available.
Jul 1 2016DeSclafani received a no-decision Friday versus the Nationals despite striking out eight and surrendering six hits, two earned runs and two walks over 6.2 innings. He pounded the strike zone throughout, notching 29 called strikes and 12 more of the swing-and-miss variety. DeSclafani has pitched exceedingly well in three of his four outings this season, notching quality starts in all of those games. Friday's strikeout total represented a season high, and he managed to maintain his ERA at a stellar 1.78. He'll try again for his third win against the Cubs on Wednesday.
Jun 26 2016DeSclafani (2-0) held the Padres scoreless over eight innings Sunday, scattering five hits while striking out five to get the win.He wasn't missing many bats, as DeSclafani only generated six swinging strikes among his 117 pitches, but with San Diego failing to muster any offense against him, manager Bryan Price let him cruise as long as possible before entrusting Cincinnati's first shutout of the season to closer Tony Cingrani. DeSclafani should have a bigger challenge in his next start, though, on the road Friday against the Nats.
Jun 21 2016DeSclafani (1-0) picked up the win against the Rangers on Tuesday. He pitched seven innings, allowing two runs, five hits and a walk while striking out six.Making his third start of the season, DeSclafani struck out more hitters Tuesday than in his previous starts combined. He showed command of his pitches for the first time, walking one after giving three free passes in each of his first two outings. He was spared a few earned runs last week, so the third-year righty claims a nifty 2.30 ERA through 15.2 innings so far.
Jun 15 2016DeSclafani gave up four runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks in only 2.2 innings Wednesday against Atlanta, but avoided a decision in an eventual 13-inning loss.Joey Votto actually did DeSclafani a favor by committing an error that made three of the runs unearned, as the 26-year-old deserved a far worse fate than merely one earned run. With 14 hits to go with a 4:6 K:BB through his first 8.2 innings of the season, DeSclafani isn't creating a lot of optimism; in most formats, you should be able to do better on the wire.
Jun 10 2016DeSclafani (oblique) made a solid return from a two month-plus absence, but did not factor into the decision Friday versus the A's. He surrendered eight hits, an earned run and three walks over six innings, while striking out two.DeSclafani did not particularly appear to be on any kind of pitch count in his season debut, as he made 102 offerings, 65 of which went for strikes. The 26-year-old was able to notch first-pitch strikes on 16 of the 27 batters he faced, and also induced 10 swinging strikes. His one mistake was the third-inning solo homer he gave up to Stephen Vogt, but DeSclafani was able to keep the ball down otherwise, generating 10 ground balls. He'll look to notch his first victory next Wednesday against the Braves.
Jun 10 2016The Reds activated DeSclafani (oblique) from the disabled list Friday.DeSclafani is ready to go after being sidelined for more than two months with his oblique injury. He will jump right into the Reds' rotation Friday night and make his 2016 debut against the A's at Great American Ball Park.
Jun 7 2016DeSclafani (oblique) threw a side session without incident Tuesday and he is scheduled to start Friday's game against the A's, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.Sheldon said to "write [DeSclafani's] name in pen" for Friday's start, so barring an unforeseen setback, DeSclafani should be expected to take the ball for the Reds' series opener against the A's. DeSclafani has been on the disabled list since March 25 due to an oblique injury and his recovery has been marred by setbacks. However, it looks like his oblique injury is behind him now, so he figures to be ready to make his season debut Friday.
Jun 5 2016DeSclafani (oblique) is tentatively scheduled to make his return Friday against the Athletics, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports.DeSclafani went six innings in Saturday's rehab outing for Triple-A Louisville, surrendering four earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. Although the numbers haven't been encouraging in his rehab starts, his health has held up, so he'll soon return to the rotation in Cincinnati. Considering that the right-hander has allowed six long balls in five rehab appearances, prospective fantasy owners might be wise to take a wait-and-see approach with the 26-year-old.
May 31 2016DeSclafani (oblique) will make at least one more rehab start, C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The right-hander built up to 62 pitches in his second rehab start for Triple-A Louisville on Monday, allowing one run on one hit while striking out seven over four innings. He did not issue a walk. Manager Bryan Price suggested he is keeping the door open for DeSclafani to make his 2016 big-league debut next week against the Cardinals, but DeSclafani will probably need to build up to at least 80 pitches or so in Saturday's outing.
May 22 2016Desclafani was transferred to the 60-day DL on Sunday, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports.Desclafani's move was merely procedural, allowing the Reds to call up multiple arms to provide bullpen depth Sunday. He remains on track for a mid-June return, with the first step being a rehab start Wednesday.
May 21 2016DeSclafani (oblique) will make a rehab start Wednesday at Triple-A Louisville, C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.DeSclafani threw live batting practice Friday and said afterward that he experienced no discomfort related to the oblique injury. Still, the Reds are planning to have him make three rehab starts, the first of which will come Wednesday. Barring a setback, DeSclafani remains on track for an early-to-mid June return.
May 20 2016DeSclafani (oblique) threw live batting practice Friday, John Fay of WCPO.com reports. The next step for DeSclafani is a rehab assignment, which is expected to consist of three minor league starts. It's not entirely clear when or where he'll begin the assignment, but DeSclafani could join an affiliate early next week. He said after Friday's session, "I feel like [the oblique's] not even a factor."
May 9 2016DeSclafani (oblique) resumed throwing Monday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.DeSclafani was able to throw from a distance of 100 feet Monday but there's no immediate timeline for him to pitch off a mound. The 26-year-old is still awaiting his 2016 MLB debut while recovering from a lingering oblique injury he initially sustained in March.
May 4 2016DeSclafani (oblique) remains shut down while on rehab at Low-A Dayton, MLb.com reports.DeSclafani experienced a setback during a rehab start Friday and departed the game with discomfort in his oblique. The right-hander doesn't believe he'll miss too much more time, however. "I'll be doing stuff again soon," DeSclafani said. "I need to get over this, over the hump with this thing. I'm not back to square one by any means. It's just making sure I don't go back to square one and being cautious with it." DeSclafani is yet to resume throwing of any kind since the setback, so at this point it's difficult to pinpoint when he might be able to return to Cincinnati. Once the discomfort subsides, he'll presumably require at least another couple of rehab appearances.
Apr 30 2016DeSclafani felt discomfort in his side during Friday's rehab start with Low-A Dayton, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.According to manager Bryan Price, DeSclafani reported some "sensation" in his side as he got deeper into Friday's outing. The skipper added that the Reds are doing "everything we can to avoid a setback" and "we're not going to push him through it." Those comments would suggest a return next week is unlikely for DeSclafani, but nothing is set in stone at this time.
Apr 24 2016DeSclafani (oblique) tossed four innings during his rehab outing at Double-A Pensacola on Saturday, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out five.In his first start at any level in 2016, DeSclafani ran into some trouble with the long ball, but indicated he felt well after the outing. He was held to a 60-to-65 pitch count for Saturday's start, but he should move that number up in his next start, which will come at Low-A Dayton. If all goes well in that rehab start, DeSclafani could be activated and reclaim a spot in the Reds' rotation.
Apr 20 2016DeSclafani (oblique) will start his rehab assignment Saturday for Double-A Pensacola.DeSclafani is expected to be back sooner than teammates Homer Bailey and John Lamb, who are also on or beginning to start their rehab assignments soon.
Apr 18 2016DeSclafani (oblique) felt good after throwing 40 pitches in a simulated game Monday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. This is great news for the right-hander, as it appears he's fairly close to returning. DeSclafani will embark on a rehab assignment soon, and should return to the Reds rotation after that as long as his oblique stays healthy.
Apr 18 2016DeSclafani (oblique) will throw live batting practice at Great American Ballpark on Monday, Reds Assistant Director of Media Relations Jamie Ramsey reports.Depending on how he comes out of the batting practice session Monday, the Reds will likely map out their rehab assignment plans for DeSclafani in the near future. He threw 45 pitches in a recent bullpen session, so a minor league rehab assignment may be a relative brief one despite the long layoff.
Apr 14 2016DeSclafani (oblique) will throw his second bullpen session of the week Friday, MLB.com reports. If all goes well Friday, DeSclafani will face live hitters Monday in Cincinnati before departing for a minor league rehab assignment. The team has not said how many rehab starts he'll make, but DeSclafani worked up to 45 pitches in his last bullpen session, so perhaps the right-hander will only need one or two starts in order to be cleared to rejoin the major league rotation.
Apr 13 2016DeSclafani (oblique) said he felt great in Wednesday's 45-pitch bullpen session, the Cincinnati Enquirer's C. Trent Rosecrans reports. It sounds like DeSclafani is itching to get back into the big league rotation, but the team has not announced what the next step will be for the young righty. Look for DeSclafani to go out on a rehab assignment next week, and if everything goes according to plan, he could join the big league rotation shortly after that.
Apr 11 2016DeSclafani (oblique) played catch on the outfield grass before Monday's game and felt good.DeSclafani's next step is to throw in the bullpen Wednesday, after which the Reds will determine his next step. "We'll see where we go from there and how he feels in that bullpen," manager Bryan Price said. "It seems like it would make sense to go out and pitch in a rehab game to verify that he's healthy. We haven't made a commitment to doing that yet." It seems highly unlikely that DeSclafani will start Friday.
Apr 10 2016DeSclafani (oblique) isn't guaranteed to make his next start, which was pushed back five days until April 15, the Cincinnati Enquirer's Zach Buchanan reports.Keep in mind that this is pretty normal for oblique injuries - it's very difficult to pinpoint a return date. So DeSclafani's status isn't necessarily that he had a setback, more that the tools that we have to predict his return are unrefined with this injury.
Apr 8 2016DeSclafani (oblique) will not make his scheduled start Sunday but manager Bryan Price stated that the young right-hander did not suffer a setback, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.According to Buchanan, DeSclafani is simply just not 100 percent ready to make a start at this point, so the Reds will be cautious and push back his next scheduled start. The Reds have not announced a potential date for DeSclafani to return to the mound, nor have they announced who will start in his place Sunday. Though having his start pushed back sounds worrisome, the fact that DeSclafani did not suffer any setbacks with his oblique is a good sign that he should be able to get back on the mound sooner rather than later.
Apr 6 2016DeSclafani (oblique) felt great after pitching a simulated game Wednesday, meaning he should be good to go for his scheduled start Sunday, John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.DeSclafani stated that he's been pain-free for the last week, which is an extremely encouraging sign. He seems very much on track to make his first start of the season Sunday, although a confirmation should come closer to Sunday's game.
Apr 3 2016DeSclafani (oblique) was placed on the 15-day DL, retroactive to March 25th, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.Because of the retroactive date, DeSclafani remains eligible to come off the DL and make his scheduled start on April 10.
Apr 3 2016Manager Bryan Price appears confident that DeSclafani (oblique) will be available for his regularly scheduled start April 10, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.Desclafani had once been considered a candidate to start the season on the disabled list, but his progress appears to have taken a turn for the better. Look for the right-hander to follow Raisel Iglesias in the rotation if everything remains on track.
Apr 1 2016DeSclafani (oblique) could start the season on the disabled list, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. There were thoughts that the right-hander could simply be pushed back to the fifth starter spot in the rotation, but that may not be enough time to get him back to health. The Reds are hopeful that he can go through a throwing progression and throw in a simulated game prior to starting for Cincinnati, so his timetable should become clearer as these points in his rehab process are reached.
Mar 28 2016DeSclafani is dealing with an oblique strain and has been pushed back to at least the Reds' fifth start on April 10. He first suffered the injury two starts ago, but then felt it more in his last start last week on Thursday. The news on DeSclafani was sort of buried in the announcement that Raisel Iglesias will start on Opening Day. DeSclafani and the Reds hope he'll be back by April 10, but that isn't assured. "[That] will allow us to go through a short throwing progression and long toss and then be able to throw a simulated game in Cincinnati and [be] ready to go on the 10th," Price said. "With the therapy and things of that nature, there was no reason to think that he couldn't pitch by the 10th. However, we all know that if it's exacerbated, it could be a much longer period of time. It's between a rock and a hard place. We need a starter and we don't want to create a bad situation."
Mar 21 2016DeSclafani changed his grip on his curveball late last season and saw a big improvement in his strikeout rate as a result, and he's been successfully refining the pitch this spring, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.DeSclafani used to throw his curveball just 3-5 percent of the time, but over the last two months it was up to nearly 17 percent. He believes that the pitch will help him better attack left-handers, against whom he's struggled in the past.
Oct 1 2015DeSclafani gave up five runs on eight hits and two walks over five innings in a loss to the Cubs on Wednesday. He struck out eight. The right-hander allowed the Cubs to score in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, with a solo homer by Starlin Castro punctuating his disappointing performance. DeSclafani gave up a total of 14 earned runs in his final three starts of the season, pushing his ERA over 4.00 for the first time all year with the five runs Wednesday. Even with the lackluster finish, DeSclafani appears to have a firm hold on a rotation spot heading into 2016.
Sep 25 2015DeSclafani (9-12) surrendered five earned runs on nine hits over 6.1 innings, striking out three in Friday's loss to the Mets.DeSclafani struggled through his second consecutive start on Friday and has now given up nine runs in his past 10.2 innings. In his 10 starts prior, DeSclafani boasted a 3.14 ERA with 8.43 K/9 rate. The DeSclafani of just a few weeks ago was a starter you could hang your hat on and get consistently solid outings. Recently, the rookie appears to have hit a wall, having now pitched 40 innings more than any of his minor-league seasons.
Sep 12 2015DeSclafani was strong again Saturday, giving up just one run on four hits and a walk over six innings while striking out a career-high 10 to pick up his ninth win of the season.Over his last four starts, DeSclafani has a 2.08 ERA, 0.962 WHIP and a 29:4 K:BB ratio in 26 innings. His next start comes Friday in Milwaukee, and in shallower leagues he's probably worth picking up if you need some late reinforcements on your pitching staff.
Sep 1 2015DeSclafani allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out seven over 5.2 innings, but received no decision Tuesday against the Cubs.DeSclafani was cruising through five innings, but ran into trouble in the sixth, as he blew a 3-1 lead. He was one out short of quality start, making this only the second time in his last eight starts he failed to reach that benchmark. His next start will be Monday against Pittsburgh.
Aug 27 2015DeSclafani (7-10) was outdueled by Zack Greinke on Thursday, as he allowed just one run on six hits and a walk over seven innings in a 1-0 loss to the Dodgers. He also struck out six. After allowing six runs in his previous start, DeSclafani bounced back nicely here and was unlucky not to receive a win. It's been a matter of consistency for the right-hander, as he's allowed six runs in three of his last 10 starts, while allowing three or less in the other seven. The pitch count has also been down for DeSclafani as of late, as he has failed to surpass 100 pitches in eight straight starts. He'll take on the Cubs in his next start on Tuesday.
Aug 22 2015DeSclafani was rocked for six runs on 10 hits in five innings Saturday against the Diamondbacks. He struck out four as he fell to 7-9 on the season. The right-hander never really recovered after allowing three runs in the first inning, as he was scored upon in four of his five frames on the day. DeSclafani was riding a streak of five consecutive quality starts heading into Saturday's game and he will look to get back on track Friday against the Dodgers.
Aug 13 2015DeSclafani's next start will come Sunday against the Dodgers, C. Trent Rosecrans of MLB.com reports.Sunday was to be Michael Lorenzen's day to take the ball, but the Reds optioned Lorenzen on Thursday and altered their rotation for this weekend's series in Los Angeles. John Lamb is now slated to start Friday, with David Holmberg and DeSclafani to follow in the final two games. DeSclafani will look to make it five straight quality starts when he takes the hill opposite Zack Greinke.
Aug 10 2015DeSclafani gave up three runs on 10 hits and a walk over six innings Sunday against the Diamondbacks, striking out three. He did not earn a decision. This was the barest level of a quality start, but it wasn't that great overall. "DeSclafani didn't have his very best stuff, but he gave us six innings of three-run baseball and the bullpen was pretty locked down until the 10th. We gave ourselves a chance to win," Reds manager Bryan Price said.
Aug 4 2015DeSclafani improved to 7-7 Tuesday after holding the Cardinals to two runs on seven hits and no walks over six innings. He struck out nine.Desclafani's lofty strikeout total was a career high and he now has two wins over the Cardinals in as many starts. He now has three straight quality starts and has lowered his ERA to 3.71. He still has just 95 strikeouts in 127 innings (6.7 K/9), so don't get used to outbursts like this.
Jul 29 2015DeSclafani (6-7) pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, striking out three and walking three against the Cardinals on Wednesday.DeSclafani helped the Reds shut out the Cardinals for the second straight night and win consecutive games at Busch Stadium since 2011. The 25-year-old collected his first shutout since having back-to-back shutouts in April, and he'll look for a repeat performance when he faces the Cardinals again in his next scheduled start Tuesday.
Jul 24 2015DeSclafani pitched well Friday, allowing three runs over seven innings in a no-decision against the Rockies. He struck out five and allowed five hits and two walks. It was a bit surprising to see DeSclafani pitch so well in Coors Field, but throwing 70 strikes is always a good recipe for a good start. A 3.48 BB/9 is the main bugaboo for DeSclafani and if he can lower that rate, he could become a streamer in standard mixed leagues. His next start will be in St. Louis on Wednesday.
Jul 18 2015DeSclafani (glute) has been confirmed as Saturday's starter against the Indians. The Reds left themselves some wiggle room, at one point suggesting they could flip-flop DeSclafani and Mike Lorenzen in the rotation if the glute was still giving DeSclafani problems. However, it seems DeSclafani made it through his side session OK, as he has been cleared to start opposite Corey Kluber. He will look to improve upon his 5.11 ERA at home.
Jul 16 2015DeSclafani (glute) is expected to start Saturday against the Indians, John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The right-hander battled through a glute strain in his July 6 outing but was unable to do so last weekend, forcing the Reds to change plans on the day of his scheduled start. DeSclafani is expected to be healthy enough to make his first start after the break, but there's a chance the team could switch him out for Mike Lorenzen, Monday's probable starter, if the glute is still presenting issues.
Jul 10 2015DeSclafani has been scratched from his scheduled start Saturday against Miami due to a glute strain, John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.Raisel Iglesias (oblique) will come off the DL to make the start opposite Mat Latos, with DeSclafani still hampered by the glute issue. He battled through it in his last start and was largely effective, holding Washington to two runs over 5.2 innings, though he did issue four walks. It's uncertain when DeSclafani will take the hill next.
Jul 6 2015DeSclafani took a no-decision Monday, allowing two runs in 5.2 innings against the Nationals.DeSclafani struck out six, but also issued four free-passes in the outing, the most he's allowed in a game since May 7. The 25 year old will make his final start of the first half this weekend against the Marlins in Miami.
Jun 30 2015DeSclafani took the loss Tuesday, allowing six runs in 6.2 innings against the Twins.A four-run seventh inning hurt DeSclafani's overall line, matching his season-high for runs allowed in a game. The righty will carry a 3.68 ERA and 1.35 WHIP into his first start of July this weekend against the Brewers.
Jun 26 2015DeSclafani allowed four runs -- one earned -- on six hits and two walks while striking out five in a no-decision against the Pirates on Thursday.DeSclafani pitched six innings Thursday, failing to make it through the seventh inning for the fourth straight game. He's only pitched seven innings twice in his last 12 starts. The 25-year-old nonetheless has a respectable 3.35 ERA for the season and will give it another go in his next scheduled start Tuesday against the Twins.
Jun 20 2015DeSclafani took the loss in Saturday's game against the Marlins, allowing three runs across five innings with three strikeouts.Saturday's outcome snapped a five-game streak of starts extending longer than six innings for DeSclafani. This is his first loss since May 17 and he'll try to rebound next Thursday against the Pirates.
Jun 14 2015DeSclafani allowed just one run over 6.1 innings Sunday against the Cubs, striking out five and walking two. He did not factor into the decision. The 25-year-old scattered six hits in the outing and was only scored upon in the seventh inning via sacrifice fly. DeSclafani has now thrown four quality starts in his last five and will carry a solid 3.36 ERA into Friday's home start against the Marlins.
Jun 4 2015DeSclafani (4-4) picked up the win Thursday in Philadelphia despite allowing four runs while striking out no batters in seven innings. He gave up six hits and two walks.DeSclafani doesn't miss a lot of bats, but at least for most of this year, he was striking out about five batters per start. Over his last two starts, however, the 25-year-old righty has struck out just one batter while walking four in 13 innings. His inconsistency makes DeSclafani tough to roll out in fantasy except as a streamer, and it's likely we'll see his ERA climb to the neighborhood of 4.00 as things go along.
May 29 2015DeSclafani allowed two runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out one over six innings of a 5-2 win against the Nationals on Friday night.DeSclafani (3-4, 3.41 ERA) has pitched reasonably well for the Reds so far this season, but the league appears to be figuring him out. His strikeout rate has dipped, and he had dropped four consecutive decisions prior to this start, so it may be prudent to be selective when starting him in upcoming outings.
May 23 2015DeSclafani allowed just one run on three hits and two walks over seven innings Saturday, while striking out six, but came away with a no-decision.He matched reigning AL Cy Young winner Corey Kluber just about pitch for pitch, but unfortunately moral victories aren't a category in most leagues. DeSclafani will take his 3.46 ERA back home for his next start Friday against the hot-hitting Nationals.
May 12 2015DeSclafani gave up three runs on seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts over six innings Tuesday against the Braves. After failing to go more than five innings in his three previous starts, DeSclafani was able to notch his fourth quality start of the season Tuesday. So far it seems that his floor is relatively high, as the 25-year-old righty's worst outing of the season was a May 1 start against the Braves when he gave up four runs over five innings. That said, the ceiling is relatively low, as he has yet to match the six strikeouts he recorded in his first start of the year and he has only pitched more than six innings in two of his seven starts.
May 7 2015Desclafani labored through five innings, giving up three runs, seven hits and four walks to go with a strikeout in Thursday's loss to the Pirates.Desclafani put himself in a lot of jams and struggled to get ahead of hitters. He has nine walks combined in his last two starts as his ERA has ticked up from 1.04 to 2.50. He'll look to have a better outing in his next start Tuesday against Atlanta.
May 1 2015DeSclafani allowed four runs on four hits, walking four and striking out five over five innings of a 4-3 loss to Atlanta Friday night. He was off to a great start to the season and came into this game leading the National League in ERA (1.04), but control problems and a Kelly Johnson home run lead to his downfall. DeSclafani has been a pleasant surprise for the Reds, but he has allowed nine runs over his last 10 innings, albeit four of those in his last start were unearned.
Apr 27 2015DeSclafani gave up five runs, only one of which was earned, in Sunday's loss to the Cubs. He allowed five hits, including Miguel Montero's solo homer, and two walks, striking out five.An error by Todd Frazier set up the Cubs' big inning against DeSclafani, but DeSclafani was one out from avoiding a big inning and instead gave up a bases-loaded triple to Addison Russell. DeSclafani will next start on the road against the Braves.
Apr 25 2015There's a 100 percent chance of rain predicted in Cincinnati for DeSclafani's start against the Cubs on Saturday. The Reds and Cubs still hope to get the game in, and for what it's worth Great American Ballpark does drain very well. So it's likely a matter of just how hard it rains and whether there will be any breaks in it, but this is the same storm front that forced Friday's game between the Royals and White Sox to be suspended.

Apr 9 2015DeSclafani delivered a credible outing in his season debut Thursday against Pittsburgh, pitching six innings while allowing two runs on five hits. He struck out six while walking just one in the no-decision.A surprisingly strong first run for DeSclafani, who was brutally hittable as a rookie for the Marlins last year. You've got to be concerned with his homer-friendly home park -- Pedro Alvarez took him yard Thursday -- and the fact that DeSclafani's track record in the minors can only be described as "decent," but NL-only owners can surely find a place for him, and mixed-league streamers should pay attention too.
Mar 27 2015DeSclafani had his best spring training outing Wednesday against the Rangers, striking out nine over six innings. He had already been penciled in to the starting rotation, but Wednesday's outing left no doubt that absent injury he would get his chance.

"I felt really good, I felt like everything was working," DeSclafani said. "It's the same plan as always, just attack hitters. It feels good to get the first one out of the way."
Jan 22 2015Reds' manager Bryan Price is "very confident" DeSclafani will be part of the starting rotation in 2015, C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.DeSclafani will surely have to earn the job during spring training, but it looks like he has a strong chance to lock down a starter's role, which only means good things for his fantasy potential. The right-hander will be 25 in April, and has seen limited success during 33-inning span in 2014. He primarily relies upon a lower-90s fastball and slider to get hitters out, and used that combo to post a 8.95 K/9 in 59.1 innings of Triple-A ball last season. DeSclafani was unable to replicate that success in the majors, so perhaps a change of scenery will help -- although he'll have to do it in a much less pitcher-friendly park.

Sep 12 2014DeSclafani was suspended for three games by the MLB Friday, but he is appealing the suspension.DeSclafani will continue to be able to pitch while his appeal is heard, but given the nature of the incident, it's hard to see the decision being overturned in the end.

Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.DeSclafani didn't fair well in his first bout at the major league level, posting a 7.40 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over five starts. Jul 25 2014DeSclafani was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans on Friday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.Rather than carry nine relievers into Friday's opener in Houston, the Marlins decided to send DeSclafani down and add a third catcher in J.T. Realmuto. DeSclafani has posted a 7.40 ERA in five starts for the big club but could get an opportunity to work in a long relief role, or even as a spot starter, in August.

However, the team's decision to option DeSclafani rather than place him on the DL suggest the injury is not serious. While the right-hander has posted a 7.40 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in his five starts for the major league club, DeSclafani will likely be among the top candidates the next time the Marlins need a spot starter or rotation fill-in.

He gave up two runs on five hits in three innings before getting pulled.
Jun 22 2014DeSclafani was knocked around by the Mets Sunday afternoon, yielding seven earned runs on seven hits in just 3.2 innings while dropping to 1-2 on the season. After starting off strong with a 1-2-3 first inning, things quickly unraveled for DeSclafani as he walked two and struck out one while spending 82 pitches to get through 3.2 frames. He was finally chased by a Daniel Murphy three-run homer in the fourth, and DeSclafani has now allowed a home run in each of his first four major league starts. Rodriguez of the Miami Sun Sentinel reports.DeSclafani was recalled by the Marlins earlier on Monday, but it was unclear at the time exactly how he would fit into the rotation. Rather than continue to send Jacob Turner and his 6.38 ERA to the hill, the team will elect to get their 24-year-old prospect some more work. Now that a rotation spot has been established, DeSclafani could be worth a flier in deeper and NL-only formats.
Jun 16 2014DeSclafani was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans on Monday, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports.DeSclafani made two spot starts for the Marlins earlier this season, allowing seven earned runs over 11.1 innings and striking out six batters. With Nathan Eovaldi on the paternity list, DeSclafani could be a candidate to make a start Wednesday if Eovaldi is not back with the team by then. If he's not needed for the spot start, he could be used out of the bullpen, or sent back down in the near future. The 24-year-old is one of the Marlins top-5 prospects, and will look to lock down a rotation spot at some point later this season, or early next.

It was an impressive debut for the 24-year-old, who earned the promotion after posting a 4.19 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 38:10 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 43 innings pitched at Double-A Jacksonville. Despite the effort, DeSclafani's future in the rotation remains unclear following the Wednesday signing of Randy Wolf, but the rookie certainly didn't hurt his chances of sticking on the roster during his first career start.
May 14 2014DeSclafani had his contract purchased from Double-A Jacksonville on Wednesday, MLB.com reports.DeSclafani will have the unenviable task of filling the rotation spot vacated by the incomparable Jose Fernandez, who appears set to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery. Top prospect Andrew Heaney could be given some consideration.
Mar 11 2014DeSclafani tossed a a pair of scoreless innings with two strikeouts in his Grapefruit League debut. An extreme long-shot to make the Marlins' Opening Day roster, it appears to be only a matter of time before the 23-year-old righty is re-assigned to minor league camp. He'll likely begin the season at Double-A Jacksonville while continuing to work as a starter, but DeSclafani could make his way to the big club in a relief role later in the season. He showed good strikeout ability (8.0 K/9 last season) coupled with a strong 1.7 BB/9 rate while working in the minors.
