Jun 30 2025Semien went 3-for-3 with a two-run home run, two walks and two total runs scored in Monday's 10-6 extra-innings loss to the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien got the Rangers on the board with his sixth-inning blast off Trevor Rogers. During his six-game hitting streak, Semien has gone 11-for-29 (.379) with three extra-base hits and five RBI. The second baseman is up to eight homers, 37 RBI, 34 runs scored, six stolen bases and a .237/.313/.355 slash line on the year, though he has consistently trended upward by hitting .324 with 14 extra-base hits over 26 contests in June.
Jun 29 2025Semien went 2-for-5 with an RBI in Saturday's 3-2 extra-inning win over Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien's bases-loaded single in the 10th inning gave the Rangers a walk-off win. It was the third consecutive game with an RBI for Semien, who is slashing .312/.365/.527 with 14 RBI during 24 games in June.
Jun 26 2025Semien went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 7-0 win over Baltimore. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien doubled and scored the Rangers' first run in the second inning and singled home a run in the fifth. He continued a remarkable turnaround at the plate; Semien sports a .352/.410/.602 line with four home runs, eight doubles, one triple, 15 RBI and 18 runs scored over the last 24 games. He spent 59 games with an average below .200 and is now up to .229, its highest point since Opening Day, when he went 2-for-4.
Jun 11 2025Semien went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a loss to the Twins on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien's lone hit was a productive one, as he belted a solo homer to left field in the second inning. The veteran second baseman continues to turn things around after a horrible start to the season that resulted in a .172 batting average through 56 games. Since May 30, Semien is batting a robust .459 (17-for-37) with three home runs, 10 RBI, 13 runs and three stolen bases over 11 contests.
Jun 8 2025Semien went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI and one run scored in Saturday's 5-0 victory over the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After going 0-for-4 in the series opener against the Nationals, Semien bounced back Saturday to stay hot at the plate. He struggled mightily in May, slashing just .207/.302/.272 with two extra-base hits and eight RBI, but the second baseman is off to a scorching start to June with a .421/.522/.895 line, five extra-base hits and five RBI through six games. For a Rangers team that has underwhelmed in 2025, a resurgence from the 34-year-old could be a key factor in helping them work their way back into contention.
Jun 5 2025Semien went 3-for-4 with two solo home runs in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien went deep in the fifth and seventh innings to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead. It unraveled in the ninth, but Semien continued a productive stretch that has seen him homer three times over the last six games for half of his output on the year. The second baseman is at a .210/.298/.308 slash line, six homers, 23 RBI, 21 runs scored and five stolen bases over 62 contests. Considering he has just nine extra-base hits on the year after posting 52 of them in 2024, he is due for a bit more power.
Jun 4 2025Semien batted sixth and went 0-for-2 with a walk in Tuesday's 5-1 loss to Tampa Bay. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien spent nine games batting eighth or ninth, before he was moved up a few spots Tuesday. He earned the better slot by slashing .346/.419/.500 with four walks, a home run, four RBI, three steals and nine runs scored while banished to the lowest spots in the order.
Jun 2 2025Semien went 2-for-2 with two walks, a double, a stolen base and three runs scored in Sunday's 8-1 win over the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien has caught fire with a three-game hit streak, during which he's gone 7-for-8 with three walks, two extra-base hits, two steals, three RBI and six runs scored. His .201 average is the highest its been since Opening Day.
May 30 2025Semien went 4-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored in Friday's 11-1 win over St. Louis. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was much-needed breakout game for Semien, who's been mired in a season-long slump that's seen him get dropped to the lower part of Texas' lineup. His four hits established a season high, and it was his first big fly since May 11. The veteran second baseman likely still has work to do before the Rangers consider elevating him to a higher lineup position -- Semien is still batting just .200 with eight RBI in 90 at-bats in May -- but Friday was certainly a step in the right direction.
May 23 2025Semien will start at second base and bat ninth in Friday's game versus the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien was demoted from leadoff to the fifth spot in the lineup in late April, and he's now been dropped all the way to the bottom of the batting order. The veteran infielder has just a .512 OPS in May after posting a .504 OPS in April.
May 16 2025Semien went 0-for-3 in Thursday's 1-0 win over Houston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien appeared to be coming out of a season-opening funk when he was dropped mid-April from leadoff to fifth in the order, but any initial success was fleeting. He posted a .271 average and .702 OPS over 14 games immediately after the change but recently is 4-for-33 (.121) with a .407 OPS across the last nine contests.
May 2 2025Semien went 1-for-2 with two walks and a stolen base in Thursday's 3-0 loss to the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Like several Texas hitters Semien is off to a slow start, but he's coming around. Thursday's single extended his hit streak to six games, during which he's batting .400 with a .520 on-base percentage. Since being dropped from leadoff to the fifth spot in the batting order, Semien has a .787 OPS over 10 games compared to .401 in 21 games atop the order.
Apr 30 2025Semien went 3-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored in Tuesday's 15-2 win over the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien, who hit safely for a fourth straight game, was one of three Texas batters to log three hits, as the team's struggling offense busted out Tuesday. Since dropping to the fifth spot in the batting order, Semien is 8-for-29 (.276) with a home run, seven RBI and three runs scored. That's a positive sign for the second baseman, who has a career-low .493 OPS through 29 games.
Apr 13 2025Semien is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien will get his first day off this season after starting at second base and leading off in each of Texas' first 15 games. With Semien getting off to a 5-for-38 start to April, he stands to benefit from a chance to clear his head. Designated hitter Joc Pederson will assume leadoff duties, while Josh Smith fills in for Semien at second base.
Apr 5 2025Semien went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk Saturday against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien had a slow start to the season with zero extra-base hits across his first 32 plate appearances entering Saturday's game. He changed that promptly by popping a leadoff homer against Taj Bradley. However, he also struck out twice and now has a 25 percent strikeout rate for the campaign, well above his 14.6 percent clip for the last two seasons.
Mar 13 2025Semien (illness) will start at second base and bat leadoff in Thursday's Cactus League game against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien was scratched from the lineup ahead of Wednesday's game against the Reds after falling victim to a stomach bug, but he appears to have made enough strides in his recovery overnight to return to action. He's gotten off to a slow start at the dish during Cactus League play, recording six hits in 32 at-bats.
Mar 12 2025Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said that Semien was scratched from Wednesday's Cactus League lineup versus the Reds due to "a little stomach virus," Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran second baseman should be ready to play in a day or two. Semien has gone 6-for-32 with a couple home runs so far this spring.
Dec 19 2024Texas manager Bruce Bochy is considering giving Semien more days off in 2025, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien, who is entering his age-34 season, has missed just four regular-season games in three years with the Rangers. Bochy said Wednesday he's discussed the idea of more off time with Semien and also broached moving him around the batting order; the second baseman has been Texas' primary leadoff hitter since signing with the club in 2022. Semien's .699 OPS last season was lower than his career mark (.763), but there wasn't much difference in his underlying metrics, suggesting a .250 BABIP as the most likely reason for his subpar 2024 season.
Sep 15 2024Semien went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Saturday's 5-4 loss to the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien's home run gave the Rangers a brief lead in the fifth inning. It was his 22nd of the season and fourth in the last six games. While Semien has been fantasy friendly in terms of home runs and runs scored (93), it's been a down season overall for the second baseman. Throwing out the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, the 33-year-old Semien's .704 OPS this season is the lowest its been since 2014.
Sep 13 2024Semien went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's 5-4 win over Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien belted his 21st home run as part of the Rangers' three-run eighth inning that wiped out the Mariners' lead. It was the second home run in as many days, and third in the last four contests, for Semien, who has hit safely in seven of the last eight games while going 11-for-34 (.324).
Sep 12 2024Semien went 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and an additional run scored in Wednesday's 14-4 loss to the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien put the Rangers on the board in the third inning with a solo home run, his second long ball in the last three games and 20th of the season. He's hit safely in six of the last seven contests, going 9-for-30 (.300) and scored seven runs. Semien is 10 runs shy of posting a fourth consecutive season with at least 100 runs scored.
Sep 8 2024Semien went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, an additional RBI and a stolen base in Sunday's 7-4 win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien ended a 19-game homer drought when he led off the bottom of the first inning with a long ball. In that span, he batted a poor .205 (16-for-78) with three doubles, five RBI, 10 runs scored and two steals. He's started to turn things around with at least one hit in five straight games. The second baseman now has a .238/.308/.387 slash line, 19 homers, 67 RBI, 88 runs scored and six steals over 141 contests this season. He hasn't missed the 20-homer mark in a full-length campaign since 2018, and he has three weeks left to reach that milestone in 2024.
Sep 4 2024Semien is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's a rare day on the bench for Semien, who started Texas' previous 52 games and is sitting for just the third time all season. It's a good time for a day off, though, as the second baseman is in the midst of a 2-for-30 slump over the past seven games. Ezequiel Duran is manning the keystone while Josh Smith receives a look atop the lineup.
Aug 25 2024Semien went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 13-5 loss to the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien led off the game with a single and scored to give Texas a brief lead early. He later drove in runs in the seventh and ninth innings. Semien is up to 63 RBI over 128 games and needs productive final month to match the 100 RBI he had in 2023.
Aug 20 2024Semien went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Monday's 4-3 win over the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien extended a hit streak to eight games with a third-inning single, and he eventually came around to score on Corey Seager's three-run home run. During the hit streak, Semien is 12-for-38 (.316) with four doubles, a home run, four RBI and six runs scored.
Aug 18 2024Semien went 3-for-5 with a double, one RBI and one run scored in Sunday's 6-5 extra-inning win over the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien has gone 10-for-34 (.294) during a seven-game hitting streak since he returned to the leadoff spot. This was his second multi-hit effort in that span, and he's added four RBI and five runs scored. The second baseman has had a bit of a challenging year, posting a .245/.314/.406 slash line with 18 home runs, 61 RBI, 78 runs scored and three stolen bases over 123 contests, but he's never looked at risk of losing his starting job.
Aug 7 2024Semien batted third and went 0-for-2 with two walks in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to Houston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien was shifted from leadoff to third in the order July 29 and has stayed there since, though Tuesday marked the first time the Rangers faced a left-hander in that span. It looks like the lineup tweak will stick against pitchers of both handedness. The second baseman is 6-for-29 with four walks, two doubles, one home run, three RBI and two runs scored over eight games as the No. 3 batter.
Aug 3 2024Semien went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in Friday's 11-6 loss to the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien swatted a two-run home run in the sixth inning, his 16th homer of the season. He's hit safely in 11 of the last 12 contests, going 14-for-49 (.286) with two doubles, one triple, three homers, five RBI and 10 runs scored over that span.
Aug 1 2024Semien went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI in Wednesday's 10-1 loss to St. Louis. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien drove in the Rangers' lone run with a sixth-inning single. He finished off his best month of the season, batting .287/.374/.479 over 24 games during July. After serving as the team's leadoff hitter all season, Semien batted third in the order for the third consecutive game Wednesday -- all coming against right-handers. It's unclear if he'll remain the club's leadoff bat against lefties. Texas kicks off a homestand Friday against the Red Sox, who have three right-handers scheduled.
Jul 30 2024Semien batted third and went 1-for-5 with a run scored in Monday's 6-3 win over the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Texas manager Bruce Bochy tweaked the batting order, having Semien hit third for the first time this season. Josh Smith, who had been batting third, took over as the leadoff hitter. Bochy told Kennedi Landry of MLB.com that the change was part of integrating Josh Jung into the lineup. "We're just tweaking it a little bit here," the manager said. "With Jung coming back, you're gonna see a little different lineup. So we wanted to take a look at it here in this series and maybe farther." It's unclear if the switch was for only right-handers or all pitchers. Jung, who was activated off the 60-day injured list Monday, did not play in that night's game, so more changes could be coming once Jung returns to the field.
Jul 25 2024Semien went 2-for-4 with a solo home run during Thursday's 2-1 win over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien extended his on-base streak to 16 games, taking Jonathan Cannon yard in the third inning for a solo shot and tying the score at 1-1. The second baseman is up to 15 homers this season -- four of which have come during his on-base streak -- while tallying a .724 OPS and a 13.6 percent strikeout rate.
Jul 23 2024Semien went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Monday's 4-3 extra-inning win over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien went deep in the third inning, his 14th home run of the season. The hit extended his on-base streak to 13 games, during which he's slashing .313/.431/.542 with three home runs, two doubles, seven RBI, 10 runs and 10 walks.
Jul 13 2024Semien went 3-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in Friday's 6-3 loss to the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien endured a miserable 4-for-47 (.085) stretch before getting the bat going over the last four games. He hit safely in all four, going 8-for-15 (.533) with a double, three RBI and three runs scored. Semien, who leads the Rangers with 60 runs, has crossed home plate more than 100 times in four straight 162-game seasons.
Jul 7 2024Semien went 1-for-3 with a walk, a two-run home run and a second run scored in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With the Rangers down 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Semien got hold of a Kevin Kelly two-seamer on the inner half of the plate and drove it over the left-field wall for the game-winning hit. The second baseman snapped a 22-game homer drought with the blast, a stretch in which he'd stumbled to a .143/.196/.176 slash line. Semien's current .679 OPS on the season would be his lowest mark since the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign, but he's still on pace for his fourth straight campaign with at least 20 home runs and 80 RBI, and the 33-year-old has plenty of time to kick his offense into a higher gear.
Jul 4 2024Semien is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game against the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's just the second day off of the season for Semien, who has managed just two hits over his last 36 at-bats. Jonathan Ornelas will handle second base for the Rangers on Thursday while Semien receives some much-needed rest.
Jun 22 2024Semien went 1-for-4 with a double and three RBI in Friday's 6-2 win over the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien provided the big hit of the game with a bases-clearing double in the sixth inning to give Texas a lead it would not relinquish. The double snapped a hitless run of 17 at-bats. Semien, the Rangers' leadoff hitter, leads the team with 43 RBI through 74 games.
Jun 15 2024Semien went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, three RBI and one stolen base in Saturday's 7-5 loss to the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien got the Rangers on the board with an RBI double in the fifth inning and added a two-out, two-run single in the ninth, but the comeback fell short. This was his third multi-hit effort in June, though it was his first since June 3. The second baseman is slashing .265/.330/.438 with 11 home runs, 40 RBI, 50 runs scored and three stolen bases over 69 contests this season. It's not a surprise that his speed has declined in his age-33 campaign, but the good news is the rest of his game appears to be in line with his career norms.
Jun 10 2024Semien went 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBI, a stolen base and an additional run scored in Sunday's 7-2 win over San Francisco. He was also hit by a pitch. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien was integral as the Rangers built an early 5-0 lead after two innings. He was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first, stole second base, then came home on Wyatt Langford's single. An inning later, Semien deposited a first-pitch slider into the stands in left for a two-run home run. He's reached base safely in nine straight games, going 11-for-31 (.355) with seven walks, two homers, three RBI and eight runs scored.
Jun 9 2024Semien went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in Saturday's 3-1 loss to San Francisco. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien, who had a seven-game hit streak halted, walked to lead off the bottom of the first inning and scored on a sacrifice fly. He leads the Rangers with 46 runs scored, which ranks tied for ninth in MLB.
Jun 3 2024Semien went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in a 2-1 loss to the Tigers on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien opened the scoring with a leadoff homer off Tarik Skubal and added a single and a walk in the third and fifth innings. The homer was Semien's first since May 17, and he has now reached base in 10 of his 14 June plate appearances. On the season, Semien is slashing .263/.322/.445 with 10 homers, 35 RBI, and 43 runs scored in 270 plate appearances.
Jun 1 2024Semien returned to the starting lineup and went 1-for-4 in Friday's 8-2 loss to Miami. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien was back in the lineup after he sat out Wednesday's game, breaking a streak of 349 consecutive regular-season starts. As it turns out, Semien was dealing with the residual effects of a collision with teammate Adolis Garcia, per Kennedi Landry of MLB.com. Texas manager Bruce Bochy said Semien was feeling "banged up," which was the reason he sat out Wednesday.
May 29 2024Semien is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien will get a day off for the first time since May 12, 2022, ending a streak of 349 consecutive regular-season starts. Though Semien isn't nursing a new injury, manager Bruce Bochy told Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News that the 33-year-old will be getting a couple days of rest -- Texas is off Thursday -- before returning to the lineup Friday in Miami since he's been playing a little banged up after he was involved in a collision in the outfield with teammate Adolis Garcia in a May 18 game. Ezequiel Duran will step in at second base in Semien's stead Wednesday, while designated hitter Travis Jankowski takes over Semien's spot atop the batting order.
May 15 2024Semien went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 4-0 win over the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien's fifth-inning blast was ultimately all the run support Jon Gray needed to carry the Rangers to a win. Through 15 games in May, Semien is 21-for-68 (.309) with three homers, 11 RBI and 12 runs scored. The second baseman has just one stolen base on the year after reaching double-digits in each of the previous eight full-length seasons, but the rest of his numbers are strong. Semien is at a .276/.320/.464 slash line with eight homers, 31 RBI, 33 runs scored, 10 doubles and a triple of 206 plate appearances on the year.
May 8 2024Semien went a combined 6-for-10 with a home run and three additional runs scored in Wednesday's doubleheader against Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien, who had identical 3-for-5 lines in each end of the doubleheader, homered for a second straight game in the matinee. It's been a productive two days for Semien, who had four hits and a homer Tuesday; the second baseman raised his average 38 points after going 10-for-15 over the last three games.
May 7 2024Semien went 4-for-5 with a home run, a double, five total RBI and three total runs scored in Tuesday's 15-8 victory over the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien led off the game with a solo blast off Ross Stripling before driving in three more runs with a pair of hits in the Rangers' 10-run second inning. Semien would add a fifth RBI with his fourth hit in the fourth. The 33-year-old second-baseman had gone nine games without a homer prior to Wednesday's contest, going 8-for-40 with just two RBI in that span. He's now slashing .266/.314/.449 through 37 games this season with six homers, 27 RBI, 27 runs scored and a stolen base.
Apr 27 2024Semien went 1-for-4 with a solo home run during Friday's victory over the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien's eighth-inning homer broke the tie in a game that had been deadlocked at 1-1 since the second frame, and it ended up being all that was needed to lift Texas over the Reds in Friday's low-scoring affair. The 33-year-old has now reached the 20-RBI mark in just 27 games, though he's gone just 4-for-25 with two RBI across his last six contests.
Apr 20 2024Semien went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored during Friday's loss to Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien's fourth homer of the year put Texas in front immediately, and his sixth-inning single sparked a rally to tie the game at 3-3, but the Rangers' offense ultimately wasn't able to keep up with Atlanta's. Semien has logged a hit in seven of his last eight games while slugging three homers in that span.
Apr 18 2024Semien went 3-for-6 with a solo homer, a double and an additional run scored in Thursday's 9-7 victory over Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien led off the afternoon with a homer off Kenta Maeda, his third longball of the year, before adding two more hits later in the contest as he wound up a triple shy of a cycle. The 33-year-old Semien has gotten off to another strong start this season while serving as Texas' primary leadoff man, slashing .286/.355/.464 with 17 RBI and 16 runs scored through his first 93 plate appearances.
Apr 14 2024Semien went 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBI during Sunday's loss to the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien's second homer of the season came with two on and two out in the ninth inning of a six-run game to cut the final deficit in half. It was the eighth multi-hit game of the season for Semien, who also added a run-scoring double on the day. The two-time All-Star who's in his third season with the Rangers now finds his batting average at .288 with 14 RBI and 12 runs scored.
Apr 11 2024Semien went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 6-2 win over the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien logged a second consecutive two-hit game. It's been feast or famine for the second baseman, who in 12 games played has seven multi-hit efforts and five in which he's had zero hits.

"He's just not on time for the fastball or the breaking ball." Apr 1 2023Semien went 1-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI in Saturday's 16-3 win over the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The second baseman got the rout started by driving the second pitch he saw from Zack Wheeler over the wall in right-center field in the first inning. Semien's 26 homers in 2022 were a bit of a disappointment after his 45-homer campaign the year before, but he made up for it with a career-high 25 steals. With one home run and one steal through the first two games of 2023, the 32-year-old could be a threat to deliver a 30-30 season.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien is batting .320 (8-for-25) with six runs scored over nine Cactus League contests. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After going 0-for-5 in the matinee, Semien got the Rangers on the board in the bottom of the first inning of the nightcap, coming home on an Adolis Garcia single after stealing his 25th base of the year. Semien's prior career high in that category was only 15, but his power numbers took a major step backward from his massive 2021 performance with Toronto. With another six years and $150 million left on his contract with Texas, he'll get plenty of chances to try and put it all together.

He joins outfielder Adolis Garcia as the second Rangers this year to achieve that feat. Semien topped his previous career high in steals (15 in 2021) earlier this season, which is due in part to the Rangers' philosophy of aggressiveness on the base paths, a benefit he talked about with Kennedi Landry of MLB.com in June.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien continues to fill in at shortstop with Corey Seager (lower leg) battling an injury. In Saturday's contest, Semien was the Rangers' best hitter and the only one to record multiple hits. The 31-year-old infielder has gone 13-for-47 (.277) in his last 11 contests. For the year, he owns a .241/.299/.402 slash line with 14 homers, 49 RBI, 55 runs scored and 18 stolen bases in 99 contests.

While Semien has gone just 4-for-30 (.133) in his last seven games, he remains a fixture in the lineup. Jul 18 2022Semien went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a stolen base in a 6-2 loss to the Mariners on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After not hitting his first home run of the year until May 28, Semien is looking much more like his usual self. The veteran right-handed bat now has five home runs in July to give him 13 on the season. He also easily stole second off Chris Flexen in the bottom of the first for his 17th stolen base of the year. The number marks a new career-high. If Semien can continue to play the way he has in June and July, then he should be in line for another high-powered second half to complement his new propensity for steals.
Jul 14 2022Semien went 0-for-3 with a walk, a run and two stolen bases in a 5-2 win against Oakland on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though he didn't collect any hits, Semien made a positive impact on the basepaths with a pair of thefts. He has a team-leading and career-high 16 steals on the campaign, but this was the first time he's picked up more than one in a game. Semien is one of only six major-leaguers with at least 10 homers and at least 15 steals so far this season.
Jul 12 2022Semien went 2-for-6 with a two-run home run and an RBI double in a 14-7 loss to the Athletics on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien jumped on Oakland starter James Kaprielian early with a two-run long ball in the first inning and tacked on an RBI double to tie the game in the 10th. He has 10 hits -- including three homers -- in eight July games, giving him a .294/.333/.618 slash line. The second baseman has looked much better in June and July after struggling in April and May. Semien's season batting average sits at .238 to go along with 11 home runs and 14 steals.
Jul 5 2022Semien went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, a second run scored and a stolen base in Monday's 7-6 extra-inning loss to Baltimore. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien's solo shot in the top of the ninth inning gave Texas a lead that closer Joe Barlow was unable to protect. The Rangers, who lead MLB with 66 stolen bases, have encouraged Semien to create havoc on the basepaths, and he's responded with 14 steals (16 attempts). That leaves Semien, who recorded double-digit steals in every season but the pandemic-shortened 2020, one shy of his career high set in 2021. Semien's deep slump to start 2022 appears to be a thing of the past; he's slashed .327/.373/.589 with eight homers, 16 RBI, six steals and 19 runs over the last 26 games.
Jul 3 2022Semien went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in a 4-1 loss to the Mets on Sunday. However, he appears to be trying to make things happen on the basepaths as a way to compensate for his lackluster performance at the plate, and has shown a propensity to run more than ever in 2022. Semien now has 13 stolen bases in 15 attempts, and he is well on pace to break his record 20 stolen base attempts from 2018.
Jun 29 2022Semien went 3-for-4 with a three-run home run, a double, a sacrifice fly and two additional runs in an 8-3 win over the Royals on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien had an excellent night at the plate and came just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. His home run in the third inning off Jonathan Heasley pushed his total to eight, while the four runs he pushed across increased his RBI total to 32. Semien got off to a miserable start in his new Texas home this season, but he has put together a solid month of June that's included six home runs, a .270 average and six stolen bases. The proven veteran hitter appears to be finding a groove and could make a solid impact moving forward in line with his performances of years past.
Jun 21 2022Semien went 3-for-4 with a homer, a double, two runs scored and two RBI in Tuesday's 7-0 win over Philadelphia. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien singled in the first, doubled and scored in the sixth and capped off his evening with a two-run homer. The 31-year-old's early-season troubles are no more as he's hitting .316/.391/.531 over his last 110 plate appearances. Additionally, his 16:12 K:BB during that span is a significant improvement over both the first month and a half of the season and his career numbers.
Jun 19 2022Semien went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base in a 7-3 loss Sunday in Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien singled, stole second and scored in the fifth inning. He has looked like his old self of late, hitting .309/.373/.544 with five homers and six stolen bases in his last 17 games. He has enjoyed most of his success away from Globe Life Field, posting a .763 OPS on the road compared to a .480 OPS at home.
Jun 13 2022Semien went 3-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base in Monday's 5-3 win over Houston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien singled three times Monday, producing his fifth multi-hit game this month. The veteran infielder's hot streak continues after his abysmal start to the season; over his last 17 games, Semien is 25-for-73 (.329) with seven steals and eight extra-base hits. He improved his season slash line to .226/.288/.351 through 264 plate appearances.
Jun 11 2022Semien went 2-for-4 with a double, two walks, two RBI and a run scored in Saturday's win over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien set the table expertly in this one. He doubled to lead off the game, walked and scored as part of a four-run rally in the fifth, walked again in the eighth and hit a two-run single as part of a four-run 10th inning. His .639 OPS on the season remains poor, but it's a far cry from the .432 OPS he owned as recently as May 17.
Jun 8 2022Semien went 7-for-8 with a walk, three solo home runs, an additional run scored and two stolen bases across both games of Tuesday's doubleheader split against the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran infielder had a rough start to his Texas tenure, but Semien is quickly making up for lost time. Over his last 12 games, he's slashing .353/.421/.725 with six homers, six steals, 12 RBI and 16 runs.
Jun 5 2022Semien went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Sunday's 6-5 extra-inning loss to the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien hit a solo shot in the third inning and was also on base with a single when Mitch Garver went yard in the eighth. This was Semien's first multi-hit game since May 27, though he's only been held without a hit twice in his last 10 contests. He's up to a .196/.257/.292 slash line with three homers -- all in that 10-game span -- 19 RBI, 26 runs scored and eight stolen bases through 230 plate appearances.
Jun 4 2022Semien went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien stole third in the fourth inning before coming around to score on an Adolis Garcia homer. The steal was Semien's fifth in his last 11 games and his eighth of the season in nine attempts. The infielder has a .191/.253/.275 slash line with two home runs, 18 RBI, 24 runs scored, nine doubles and a triple through 51 contests, though he's also hit safely in eight of his last 11 games as he begins to turn things around at the plate.
Jun 3 2022Semien went 0-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 4-3 loss to the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien reached on an error, stole second scored on a Corey Seager double in the sixth inning. Four of Semien's seven steals this season have come in his last 10 games. He's added a paltry .190/.253/.275 slash line with two home runs, 18 RBI, 23 runs scored, nine doubles and a triple in 221 plate appearances this season. The infielder had batted second in each of the last two games, but with Josh Smith (shoulder) exiting Friday's game early, Semien could be an option to return to the leadoff spot Saturday.
Jun 2 2022Semien went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Thursday against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien took Corey Kluber yard in the sixth inning to record his second home run of the season. Though he's still slugging just .281 across 217 plate appearances for the campaign, Semien has three extra-base hits -- including both of his long balls -- across his last six starts. Semien's performance hasn't met expectations, but he has still managed to chip in 22 runs scored and six stolen bases despite hitting just .194.
May 29 2022Semien went 1-for-4 with a stolen base, an RBI, a run scored and a walk in Sunday's 6-5 loss to the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien contributed an RBI single in the fifth inning to stretch the Rangers' lead to 4-0. They fell behind, but 31-year-old helped them tie the game again with some heads-up baserunning in the ninth. He stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch, though the A's ultimately walked it off in the bottom of the ninth. Semien has shown some life at the plate lately, going 16-for-56 (.286) in 14 games since May 15. Despite the uptick, he's still sporting a mediocre .196/.258/.268 slash line with one home run, 17 RBi, 19 runs scored and six steals through 45 contests.
May 27 2022Semien went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, one RBI and a stolen base in Friday's 8-5 win over Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien singled and scored in both the first and eighth innings before driving in a run and stealing second base in the ninth. It's been a slow start to his career in Texas but it seems like he could be breaking out of his funk. Semien has gone 12-for-37 (.324) with four steals over his last nine games, raising his season slash line to .193/.246/.251 through 43 games.
May 26 2022Semien went 2-for-4 with a triple, a run, an RBI and a stolen base Wednesday in a 7-2 win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien led off the game with a single, stole second base and subsequently came around to score on a Mitch Garver sacrifice fly. He tallied an RBI on a sacrifice fly of his own in the seventh frame. This was one of the better games in what has been a brutal campaign for the veteran, as he still hasn't hit a homer and is slashing just .185/.242/.247 across 178 plate appearances. He may be starting to come on, however, going 9-for-28 (.321) with two RBI and two thefts over his past seven contests.
May 20 2022Semien went 1-for-4 with a double and a stolen base in Thursday's 5-1 loss to the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The stolen base was Semien's third of the season and first in 28 contests. The second baseman and leadoff batter had his fourth hit in the last two games, but he's still batting just .175 with eight RBI through 36 games. For the optimists, Semien is batting .200 during the month of May, up from a .157 April.
May 19 2022Semien went 3-for-5 at the dish in Wednesday's 6-5 win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The three hits were a season high for Semien and exceeded his combined output (two) from his previous nine games combined. Semien's lowly .173 batting average is destined to climb from here, but the 31-year-old has yet to show any signs of bouncing back in the power department. With his move to Texas this offseason, Semien was already expected to see a downturn from the career-best 45 home runs he delivered with Toronto in 2021, but his decline as a power hitter has been even more severe than anticipated. He has yet to leave the yard through 35 games and has only seven extra-base hits (all doubles) over his 153 plate appearances. Per Statcast, Semien sits in the bottom-10 percentile of all hitters in terms of average exit velocity, barrel rate, expected slugging percentage and hard-hit percentage, so it's tough to count on him staging a major turnaround as a power hitter.
May 14 2022Semien went 0-for-4 in Friday's 7-1 loss to Boston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien extended a streak of futility to 21 at-bats without a hit, dropping his season average to .160. History suggests he'll come around. Over his career, May and August have been his best months, during which his average is .266.
May 12 2022Semien isn't starting Thursday's game against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien will get a breather after he went 0-for-16 with five strikeouts over the last four games. Andy Ibanez will start at the keystone while Eli White takes over in left field.
May 9 2022Semien went 2-for-8 with a pair of base hits while picking up starts in both ends of Sunday's doubleheader with the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien provided both of his singles in the Rangers' 2-1 loss in Game 1, marking the third straight contest in which he provided exactly two hits. He came up empty at the dish in Texas' 4-2 win in Game 2, however, and enters Monday's series finale with a .184/.252/.243 slash line on the season. Despite his underwhelming production in his first season in Texas, Semien will sit atop the lineup Monday against Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes.
Apr 24 2022Semien went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk in a 2-0 loss Sunday in Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien led off the game with a single, walked in the third and doubled in the eighth. It was just the second multi-hit game of the season for the second baseman. After signing a massive contract with Texas, he has struggled to produce or hit for power as a Ranger. Over the last week he has been better, going 6-for-21 with two doubles and three walks but he remains in search of his first home run of 2022.
Apr 17 2022Semien went 1-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and an RBI in Saturday's 7-2 loss to the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Following a slow start out of the gate, Semien has strung together three straight games with a hit. He also stole a bag for the second straight contest. Semien has two extra-base hits (both doubles), two RBI and five runs scored over eight games.
Apr 16 2022Semien went 1-for-3 with two walks, a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 9-6 loss to the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien's had a quiet presence to open the season, but Friday's effort was a promising sign he's ready to start making an impact. The stolen base was the first of the season, and he has hits and runs scored in two consecutive games.
Apr 11 2022Semien batted leadoff and went 1-for-5 in Monday's 6-4 extra-inning loss to the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien was back in the leadoff spot for a second straight game -- both against left-handers -- after hitting out of the two-hole against righties the first two contests. It's been slow start with his new team; Semien is batting .111 (2-for-18) with a walk and four strikeouts through four games.
Mar 19 2022Semien went 0-for-2 in Friday's spring game against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien, one of two major free-agent acquisitions during the offseason, made his Cactus League debut Friday, batting atop the lineup. He was followed in the order by the team's other major free-agent signing, Corey Seager. The Rangers traded their primary leadoff hitter from last season, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, so Semien should be viewed as a leadoff option. He mostly batted first or second for the Blue Jays in 2021.
Nov 28 2021Semien is signing a seven-year, $175 million contract with the Rangers, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In Semien's one year with Toronto, the 31-year-old hit 45 home runs with 102 RBI and 15 stolen bases. Over the past three seasons, including his poor 2020 campaign, Semien has averaged 37 home runs and 93 RBI per 162 games while slashing .268/.346/.509. The 2021 Gold Glove winner is a good defender at second base and shortstop and joins a team lacking a strong option at either position.
Nov 8 2021Semien rejected Toronto's $18.4 million qualifying offer Monday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As expected, the shortstop will test the open market coming off the most impressive season of his MLB career. He smashed a career-high 45 home runs and also set career bests in RBI (102) and stolen bases (15) in 162 games. Semien is just one of a handful of quality shortstops headed for free agency this offseason, as Carlos Correa, Corey Seager and Trevor Story are also set to test the waters.
Nov 6 2021The Blue Jays extended a qualifying offer to Semien on Saturday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coming off a career year, Semien will likely decline the one-year, $18.4 million qualifying offer and cash in with a large multi-year deal deal. The Blue Jays don't have strong internal candidates to replace Semien, so they could remain in the mix to bring him back even if he declines the offer.
Sep 30 2021Semien went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 6-5 win over the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With his first-inning blast off Gerrit Cole, Semien became the all-time single-season home run champ at second base, with his 44 long balls topping Davey Johnson's record of 43 set in 1973. The 31-year-old is one of only four second sackers in history to hit more than 40 homers in a year, joining Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby and Brian Dozier is a very exclusive club. Semien's September power display -- 12 home runs in 27 games -- is a big reason why Toronto is still in the hunt for a wild-card spot.
Sep 25 2021Semien went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in Saturday's 6-1 win over Minnesota. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 31-year-old's 43rd homer of the year tied him with Davey Johnson for the most in a single season by a second baseman. Semien's power surge has seen him swat 11 long balls in 24 September games. He's added a .271/.341/.548 slash line with 99 RBI, 111 runs scored and 15 stolen bases across 692 plate appearances in arguably the best year of his career.
Sep 24 2021Semien went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a double in a loss to the Twins on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Toronto managed only four hits in the loss, with half of those coming off Semien's bat. The infielder accounted for the team's only run of the game with his 439-foot solo shot in the sixth inning. Semien has gone deep in three of his past seven contests and ranks fourth in the majors with 42 long balls on the campaign. He is one homer away from tying Davey Johnson's all-time single-season mark for a second baseman.
Sep 21 2021Semien went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Monday's 6-4 loss to the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien made the game interesting late after slugging a two-run shot off David Robertson in the ninth to make it a 6-4 ballgame. The 30-year-old has at least a hit in 17 of 19 games and is fourth in baseball with 41 homers. Currently playing on a one-year prove-it contract, all Semien has done this year is prove his worth, as he's slashing .270/.340/.544 with 81 extra-base hits, 97 RBI, 108 runs scored, 15 steals and 63:136 BB:K over 670 plate appearances.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien socked yet another homer Saturday, taking Bailey Ober deep to get the Blue Jays on the board in the fourth. With this latest bomb, Semien became only the fifth second baseman in MLB history to hit 40 home runs in a season. He is now just three round-trippers behind Davey Johnson for the all-time mark of 43, which was set in 1973.
Sep 12 2021Semien went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Saturday's 11-2 win in Game 2 of the doubleheader against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien slammed a three-run homer in the seventh inning off Tanner Scott as a part of an 11-run inning. The 30-year-old is on fire, tallying seven homers in 11 games so far in September. On the season, he is slashing .272/.342/.550 with 39 long balls, 94 RBI, 101 runs and 15 steals in 634 plate appearances.
Sep 9 2021Semien went 2-for-3 with two walks, two RBI and a run Wednesday in the Blue Jays' 6-3 win over the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien has been the driving force of the Blue Jays' 7-0 start to September. In those seven games, he's gone 10-for-27 (.370 average) with six home runs, 13 RBI, seven runs, a stolen base and a 5:4 BB:K. After plating a pair of runs on a base hit in the fourth inning, Semien upped his season RBI total to 90. In so doing, he joined teammate Vladimir Guerrero (99 RBI, 106 runs) as the only players with in the majors with at least 90 RBI and 90 runs.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Jays only managed seven hits on the afternoon but four of them left the yard, with Semien leading the barrage. The 30-year-old is locked in right now, going deep five times during Toronto's current five-game winning streak with 10 RBI, and Semien's 37 homers on the season have established a new franchise record for most home runs in a season by a middle infielder.
Sep 5 2021Semien went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk and a hit by pitch in Sunday's 8-0 win over Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The infielder recorded only three hits in 13 at-bats against his former team during the weekend series, but two of those knocks landed beyond the fence. Semien has enjoyed a career-best year in the power department with 35 homers and a .530 slugging percentage through 601 plate appearances. Aug 29 2021Semien will start at second base and bat leadoff in Sunday's game against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After homering twice Thursday against the White Sox to bring his total up to 32 on the season -- one shy of his career high -- Semien has gone 1-for-8 with a base hit in the first two contests of the series in Detroit. The Blue Jays will keep him atop the lineup for the second game in a row Sunday, though he could shift down in the order as soon as Monday, when George Springer (knee) could be ready to return from the injured list.
Aug 21 2021Semien went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 3-0 win over the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He capped the scoring on the afternoon with an eighth-inning blast off Erasmo Ramirez. He's now slashing .294/.359/.530 with 15 home runs, 44 runs, 37 RBI and eight stolen bases in 2021.
Jun 12 2021Semien went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Saturday's win over the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The infielder only recorded one hit in five trips to the plate but made his presence felt, as he launched his 15th homer of the campaign during the fifth inning and off Nick Pivetta. Semien extended his hitting streak to five games as a result, although he's gone just 6-for-23 in that span.
May 30 2021Semien went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a walk in Sunday's win over Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien extended his hitting streak to seven games, but the shortstop has been seeing the ball well for an extended period of time and has hit safely in all but three games in the entire month. He's hitting .369 with eight homers, 12 doubles, a triple, 21 RBI, 22 runs scored and 11 walks across 122 plate appearances in May.
May 27 2021Semien went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien homered off Domingo German with two outs in the third inning to start the scoring Thursday. It was his 13th long ball of the season, trailing only Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s 16 for Toronto. The 30-year-old is providing high-end power and speed, leading the team with eight steals in addition to being second in homers. He is slashing .286/.353/.546 in 216 plate appearances.
May 24 2021Semien went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Monday's loss to the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien belted his 12th home run of the season in the bottom of the 10th inning, a two-run shot to tie the game at seven. The 30-year-old continues to have an impressive month of May at the plate, hitting .359 with seven homers, 20 RBI and two stolen bases through 22 games.
May 22 2021Semien went 3-for-6 with a double, a triple, a home run, three runs scored, two RBI and a stolen base in Friday's 9-7 extra-innings loss to the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran infielder couldn't come up with the single he needed for the cycle, but it was still a very impressive performance. Semien has hit safely in five straight games with four of them being multi-hit efforts, and he's slashing a blistering .380/.430/.747 in May with six homers, two steals, 18 RBI and 19 runs in 19 contests.
May 19 2021Semien went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, a double and a pair of walks in Wednesday's 7-3 loss to Boston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old attempted to spark a comeback in the seventh inning with his two-run blast, but that was it for Toronto's run production Wednesday. Semien has racked up seven hits in his last 13 at-bats. The power-hitting infielder owns a .280/.346/.512 slash line with 10 homers, 26 RBI, 25 runs scored and seven stolen bases in 182 plate appearances this year.
May 16 2021Semien went 3-for-5 with a home run, two doubles, three RBI and two runs in Sunday's 10-8 win over the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien went hitless with three strikeouts in seven at-bats across the first two games of the series, but he flashed his power with three extra-base hits Sunday. The 30-year-old is now hitting .269 with nine home runs, 23 RBI, 23 runs and seven stolen bases this year.
May 14 2021Semien went 0-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and two strikeouts in Friday's 5-1 loss to Philadelphia. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Semien's 12-game hitting streak came to a close Friday, he salvaged some value from the contest with his seventh stolen base of the season. The 30-year-old infielder is still hitting .365 (19-for-52) in May with three home runs, 10 RBI, 10 runs scored and a steal. Overall, he's knocked eight homers with 20 RBI and 21 runs scored in 163 plate appearances this year.
May 8 2021Semien went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run, a walk and an additional run scored in Toronto's 8-4 win over the Astros on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien homered off Joe Smith in the ninth inning to lengthen Toronto's lead. He has reached safely in his last 16 games and is batting .351 with four home runs, 12 RBI and 10 runs during that stretch. In addition, he and Bo Bichette lead the Blue Jays with eight home runs and six steals each. The 30-year-old is slashing .254/.326/.476 in 141 plate appearances.
May 7 2021Semien went 4-for-6 with a home run, a double and three runs scored in Thursday's win over the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien has been seeing the ball well of late, as he's riding a six-game hitting streak while also recording at least one knock in 12 of his last 13 appearances and registering four multi-hit games in that period. He's hitting .367 with three homers, nine RBI, eight runs scored and a 1.049 OPS during that 13-game span.
May 2 2021Semien went 2-for-4 with a homer, a double and four RBI in Sunday's 7-2 win over Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien gave Toronto a 3-1 lead with his two-run double in the third inning and later broke the game open with his two-run shot in the eighth. The 30-year-old improved his season slash line to .228/.301/.416 with seven extra-base hits and 14 RBI.
May 1 2021Semien isn't starting Saturday's game against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien will be out of the lineup for the first time this season after he hit .211 with five home runs and 10 RBI in April. Joe Panik will start at second base and bat eighth.
Apr 23 2021Semien went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and one strikeout in Friday's 5-3 win over the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien capped off a four-run rally with two outs in the first inning Friday by hitting his fifth home run of the year. The 30-year-old is now slashing .208/.279/.403 with five home runs, 10 RBI and four stolen bases this season.
Apr 21 2021Semien went 2-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base and a run in Wednesday's win over Boston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien was one one of our Blue Jays with two hits in the contest, and he crossed the plate with the team's second run after singling, stealing second, advancing to third on a wild pitch and coming home on a sacrifice fly in the second inning. Though he's batting a meager .192 on the season, the veteran infielder has provided fantasy value with four homers, four steals and seven RBI.
Apr 13 2021Semien went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and a walk during Tuesday's win over the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien extended Toronto's lead with a solo shot against Jameson Taillon in the fourth inning. The long ball was the team-leading fourth of the season for the 30-year-old, who is hitting .213/.288/.468 across 11 games.
Apr 7 2021Semien went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Wednesday's 2-1 loss to the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien got the Blue Jays on the board with his homer off Rangers reliever Matt Bush in the eighth inning. Through six games, Semien has racked up three homers, five RBI, three runs scored and a pair of walks. He's slashing .240/.296/.600 across 27 plate appearances.
Apr 5 2021Semien went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run in Monday's 6-2 victory over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien increased his club's lead to three in the top of the second with a two-run blast to left field. The 30-year-old shortstop is now 4-for-18 with two home runs, four RBI and one walk early in his 2021 campaign (four games).
Apr 3 2021Semien went 2-for-4 with a homer, a walk,a pair of RBI and a pair of steals in Saturday's game against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien hit a solo shot in the fifth inning, driving Corey Kluber from the game. He later hit an RBI groundout in the seventh inning. His two steals were perhaps the most encouraging part of his day, as he stole just four last season.
Mar 18 2021Semien has gone 6-for-28 (.214) through 11 Grapefruit League games with a double, a home run and a 4:7 BB:K. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The former Athletic is adjusting to life with a new team and at a new position as he converts from shortstop to second base for the Jays. Semien appears to be handling the switch well from a defensive perspective, and while he's coming off a disappointing 2020 at the plate, the 30-year-old slashed .285/.369/.522 the season before with a career-high 33 homers, 92 RBI and 123 runs. In a loaded Toronto lineup, Semien won't be one of the core pieces as he was in Oakland, but he could still provide strong fantasy numbers.
Jan 26 2021Semien agreed to a one-year, $18 million contract with the Blue Jays on Tuesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old was unable to secure a long-term deal this offseason, but he'll get $18 million this season before returning to free agency ahead of the 2022 campaign. Bo Bichette isn't going anywhere at shortstop for the Blue Jays, so Semien is expected to take over at second base, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Semien has exclusively played shortstop since 2015, but he did have some big-league experience at second base and third base across the two previous seasons. He largely struggled in 2020 with a .679 OPS in 53 games, but he posted an .891 OPS with 33 homers in 2019 and will look to recapture that form for Toronto.
Oct 7 2020Semien went 2-for-4 with a solo homer, a single and a walk in Wednesday's win over the Astros in Game 3 of the ALDS. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien hit a solo homer in the fifth inning off Jose Urquidy. The 30-year-old crushed his second homer of the postseason as he helped in an effort to keep the season alive. The right-handed hitter slashed .223/.305/.374 and smacked 7 homers while recording 23 RBI during the regular season.
Sep 26 2020Semien is not starting the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Athletics have clinched the division, so there's no need for them to ask their star hitters to play twice in one day. Nate Orf will take over at shortstop in his absence.
Sep 15 2020Semien went 2-for-3 with a walk, a home run and four RBI during a 6-5 loss to the Mariners in the first game of Monday's doubleheader. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: His three-run shot off Marco Gonzales in the fourth inning gave the A's a 5-0 lead, but Jesus Luzardo and Joakim Soria combined to squander it. Semien is hitting .318 (7-for-22) over his last six games including the nightcap, but on the year he still carries a sluggish .227/.300/.395 slash line with seven homers, four steals, 21 RBI and 24 runs through 42 contests.
Sep 12 2020Semien went 2-for-8 with with a home run, four RBI and two runs scored across both games of a doubleheader against the Rangers on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in the opening game, but he rebounded in the second contest, slugging a three-run home run for his sixth long ball of the season. Entering the game, Semien had gone just 2-for-15 in four games since returning from a side injury, so it's possible this performance will get him back on track at the plate. Overall, Semien is hitting .221/.286/.374 across 178 plate appearances.
Sep 10 2020Semien is 0-for-8 with one walk and three strikeouts in his first two games back since missing four contests with a side injury. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: That tally includes a particularly rough day in Wednesday's win against the Astros, a game in which Semien struck out thrice in five plate appearances. The veteran shortstop was showing some signs of life at the plate prior to his injury, going 7-for-13 with a double, a home run and two RBI in three of the last four games he played before being sidelined. However, it appears the struggles he's been enduring for most of the campaign have reemerged, if his first two return performances are any indication.
Sep 8 2020Semien is not in the lineup for Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old returned from a four-game absence to start Tuesday's matinee, and he went 0-for-4 in the contest. It's not a major surprise to see the A's easing Semien back into action and not having him start both ends of the twin bill. Vimael Machin will take over at shortstop for the nightcap.
Sep 7 2020Semien (side) could return to the lineup for one of the Athletics' two games Tuesday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Bob Melvin said that if Semien feels good, he will return to the lineup after missing over a week of action. Complicating matters a bit is the fact that Oakland plays a doubleheader Tuesday, so it's unclear for which of the contests Melvin would place Semien back in the lineup.
Sep 6 2020Manager Bob Melvin said that Semien (side) will likely take batting practice on the field Monday and could play soon thereafter, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's been more than a week now since Semien last appeared in a game. Fortunately, it does not sound like an IL stint will be necessary as Semien is making slow, but steady, progress. If he checks out OK in batting practice, it's reasonable to think Semien could return to the lineup for one half of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Astros.
Sep 5 2020Semien (side) isn't in Saturday's lineup against the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien will sit for a second consecutive game, but he has been swinging the bat and feeling better recently. Vimael Machin will take over at shortstop Saturday.
Sep 3 2020Semien (side) swung the bat Thursday and continues to feel better, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The hope is that he can avoid an IL stint, although the previous report suggested he wouldn't be able to return until Saturday, at the earliest. Vimael Machin, Chad Pinder and Tony Kemp could all be options to fill in for Semien on Friday against the Padres.
Sep 2 2020Manager Bob Melvin said that he thinks Semien (side) to avoid a trip to the injured list, though the shortstop isn't expected to be available for the Athletics' next game Friday versus the Padres, Shayna Rubin of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Before returning to action Friday, the Athletics will have had a full five days off after a member of their organization tested positive for COVID-19. The extra time off apparently hasn't allowed Semien to completing move past the injury, which has affected him most while swinging the bat, according to Martin Gallegos of MLB.com. The Athletics seem content to take a day-to-day approach with Semien heading into the weekend, but Chad Pinder and Vimael Machin could pick up work at shortstop in the short term.
Aug 31 2020Semien (side) is feeling slightly better Monday according to general manager David Forst, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Forst also mentioned that Semien has dealt with the side soreness in each of the past two seasons. It's still unclear when the shortstop will be able to return to the top of Oakland's lineup, but there remains the possibility that he'll be ready Thursday in Seattle, if the club is cleared to resume play then. The A's are currently isolating in Houston as they await COVID-19 tests after a member of the organization tested positive Sunday.
Aug 30 2020Semien (side) underwent an MRI which revealed no serious issues, and he isn't expected to face a long-term absence, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old was scratched for Game 2 of Saturday's twin bill with left side soreness, but it appears he won't miss significant time. Semien hasn't been provided an official timetable for his return, but the A's are likely to remain cautious with their starting shortstop and leadoff man. Oakland didn't play Sunday and its schedule for the immediate future is in limbo after a positive test for COVID-19 was reported in the organization, so Semien could end up missing fewer games than he would under normal circumstances.
Aug 29 2020Semien is experiencing left side soreness and is undergoing an MRI, Alex Coffey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old was a late scratch for Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader, and the MRI brings some concern he could face a longer absence. The A's should have more information on the injury Sunday, but Semien at least seems unlikely to be in the lineup for the series finale in Houston.
Aug 25 2020Semien went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run, an additional run scored and a double in Tuesday's 10-3 win over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien swatted his fifth homer of the year in the fifth inning, accounting for what would be the winning run. In the seventh, the shortstop got aboard on a fielder's choice and later scored on Stephen Piscotty three-run double. Semien has back-to-back three-hit games, raising his batting average to .233 across 143 plate appearances. He's added 12 RBI, 18 runs scored and three stolen bases in 31 games this year.
Aug 24 2020Semien went 3-for-4 with three singles and a walk in Monday's 3-2 loss to the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After an outstanding 2019 in which he hit .285/.369/.522 with 33 home runs, Semien has struggled a bit in the first half of the shortened 2020 campaign. He will hope that his three singles Monday can get him going on the right track after hitting just .219/.275/.352 through the first 30 games. Despite his struggles, Semien appears to still have a stranglehold on everyday leadoff duties atop the Oakland lineup.
Aug 21 2020Semien went 1-for-5 with a solo home run during Friday's win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien wasted no time getting the scoring started with a solo homer off Andrew Heaney in the first inning. The long ball was number four of the year for the 29-year-old, who has now hit safely in nine of his last 10 games. On the season, Semien is batting .214/.258/.359 with 15 runs scored and two stolen bases.
Aug 17 2020Semien went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in a win over the Giants on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien furnished the second of two multi-run homers off Dereck Rodriguez in the fifth inning, lacing a 379-foot shot to left field in the fifth inning with Sean Murphy aboard. The veteran shortstop has now left the yard in back-to-back games and is progressively putting a completely abysmal start to the season behind him -- factoring in Sunday's production, Semien is slashing a solid .268/.333/.537 with two doubles, three homers, seven RBI, four walks, two stolen bases and seven runs across his last nine games, raising his average 37 points to .216 in the process.
Aug 16 2020Semien went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in a win over the Giants on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien broke a scoreless tie in the third inning, blasting a 404-foot homer to center field for his second long ball of the season. The home run extended Semien's modest hitting streak to four games, and he has collected three extra-base hits during that stretch.
Aug 15 2020Semien went 2-for-5 with a double in Friday's win over the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien was one of two Oakland players who mustered more than one hit against the Giants pitching staff, and the star shortstop has been seeing the ball well of late -- he has hit safely in three straight games and in six of Oakland's last seven contests, hitting .290 with an .823 OPS in that stretch. He is beginning to turn things around after a slow start to the season.
Aug 9 2020Semien went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs overall in a win over the Astros on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A forgettable start had his season slash line sitting at .179/.207/.232 two games ago, but Semien has come alive to an extent with a 4-for-11 tally over his last pair of contests. Saturday's home run was his first of the season, particularly noteworthy considering he slugged a career-high 33 homers in 2019. The veteran shortstop still has plenty of work to do -- his 31.9 percent strikeout rate is a career high, while his 2.9 percent walk rate is his lowest since his rookie 2013 campaign -- but his current surge may be an indication that he's beginning an ascension to his career norms.
Aug 8 2020Semien went 2-for-7 with an RBI in Friday's extra-inning win over the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien played hero for the Athletics, as he notched the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the 13th inning with a single to center field. It was Semien's second multi-hit game of the season and it couldn't have come at a better time for Oakland. Even though Semien is only hitting for .190 with a .215 on-base percentage in 65 at-bats this season, he has been consistent and has hit safely in 10 of the team's 14 games so far.
Aug 6 2020Semien, who went 1-for-4 with a run and three strikeouts in a win over the Rangers on Wednesday, is now sporting a 31.5 percent strikeout rate across his first 54 plate appearances. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The leadoff hitter is typically responsible for setting the tone for a team's offense, and as such, it isn't surprising to see the Athletics have often struggled to score runs this season with Semien seeing a significant drop-off at the plate early. The veteran shortstop, who's due to hit the open market this coming offseason, has also seen a drop in walk rate from 11.6 percent to 3.7 percent and sports a pedestrian 25.7 percent hard contact rate after logging a 41.9 percent figure last season. There is no artificially low BABIP (.286) as a culprit either, as Semien is simply either swinging and missing or putting the ball in the air a lot more (51.4 percent flyball rate) than in previous seasons. Semien has hit safely in three of the past four games, but he still sports just a .130 average (3-for-24) in five August contests and hasn't left the yard yet this season after slugging a career-high 33 home runs in 2019.
Jul 31 2020Semien went 1-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored in Friday's loss to Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien finally got the A's on the board in the eighth inning with a two-run triple off Bryan Shaw. He then scored thanks to a sacrifice fly from Ramon Laureano. Unfortunately, the A's still came up short. The 29-year-old has now hit safely in six straight games.
Jul 27 2020Semien went 2-for-4 with a run in a win over the Angels on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran shortstop has reached safely in each of the first three games of the season, and he's hit in two straight. Semien has also parlayed his four instances on the base paths into three runs thanks to some timely hitting behind him, leading to a relatively productive fantasy start in 2020.
Jul 18 2020Semien has a big season as the everyday shortstop ahead of him with unrestricted free agency looming this coming offseason, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran shortstop and fantasy managers will both hope Semien didn't peak in 2019, when he produced a career-best .285/.369/.522 line with new high-water marks in doubles (43), runs (123), walks (87), home runs (33) and RBI (92). Semien also played all 162 games for the first time in his career in 2019, and he suited up for 473 of a possible 486 games over the 2015, 2016 and 2018 campaigns. Therefore, the 29-year-old is likely to have the entire 60-game canvas afforded by the 2020 regular season to try and make another strong case for a lucrative long-term contract, although it remains to be seen what the financial environment across MLB will be this coming winter.
May 16 2020Semien, who is due to become an unrestricted free agent next offseason, may find it difficult to maximize his earnings with the Athletics or another team due to the depressed financial climate expected from an abbreviated or canceled 2020 campaign, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien is already guaranteed to receive a full year of service time for 2020 under any circumstance as part of an agreement reached between MLB and MLBPA in late March. However, his original $13 million salary for the delayed regular season will be significantly depleted due to the reduction in games expected, and Semien's ability to begin making up for lost income with his next contract could also be compromised. Slusser reports the veteran shortstop is already a longshot to re-sign with the Athletics on a multi-year deal due to the organization's goal of retaining at least one of Matt Chapman and Matt Olson, but she adds that they could even struggle to extend him a qualifying offer that is still likely to be in the $18 million range due to financial hardship.
Mar 31 2020Semien will be credited with a full year of service time even if the 2020 season is canceled outright, keeping him on track to become a free agent next offseason, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien's impending free-agent status, along with that of teammates such as Liam Hendriks, Mike Fiers and Yusmeiro Petit, was secured as part of a multi-faceted agreement reached last Thursday between MLB and the MLBPA. There's still a stronger likelihood the 2020 regular season is played in some form as opposed to being canceled outright, but this provision gives Semien some peace of mind. If there's ultimately no 2020 campaign, the veteran shortstop will potentially head into the open market on the strength of a career-best 2019 season that saw him slash .285/.369/.522 with 83 extra-base hits (43 doubles, seven triples, 33 home runs) and 92 RBI across 747 plate appearances while appearing in all 162 games.
Mar 1 2020Semien is hitting .400 with a double, four RBI, four walks and four runs across six spring games. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The shortstop will play his final year under team control on a $13 million contract, making his salary second only to Khris Davis on the Athletics. Semien could well be elsewhere in 2021, but after compiling a career-best .285/.369/.522 line last season that included new high-water marks in doubles (43), triples (seven), home runs (33) and RBI (92), he's expected to be a major contributor again this coming season.
Jan 10 2020Semien agreed to a one-year, $13 million deal with the A's on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This is his third and final year as an arbitration-eligible player before heading to free agency. He will be Oakland's second-highest paid player, behind Khris Davis ($16.75 million in 2020).
Sep 29 2019Semien will start at shortstop and bat leadoff Sunday against the Mariners, but he's expected to exit the contest after one plate appearance, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Athletics have already secured home field for their wild-card matchup Wednesday versus the Rays, so Semien and several other regulars will likely get the opportunity to rest up with little at stake in the regular-season finale. Semien likely would have been excluded from the lineup entirely, but he may have talked his way into starting so he could play in all 162 games this season. With only one plate appearance on tap, Semien won't be worth including in DFS lineups.
Sep 28 2019Semien went 1-for-3 with a leadoff solo home run and two walks in a loss to the Mariners on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien jump-started the Athletics with his first-inning, 425-foot solo blast to left field. The shortstop has essentially maximized his contract year and is therefore in line for a big payday this offseason, and he could naturally enhance his overall profile even further with a strong showing in the upcoming postseason. Irrespective of what unfolds during the final two regular-season games, Semien will head into next Wednesday's American League Wild Card Game hot, as he's hitting .361 with 18 extra-base hits (nine doubles, one triple, eight home runs) and 19 RBI in September.
Sep 23 2019Semien doubled twice, scored a run and drove in another across five at-bats Sunday in the Athletics' 8-3 loss to the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien is now up to 42 doubles on the season, placing in a three-way tie for fifth place in the majors. Additionally, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports the one time Semien crossed the plate Sunday pushed him past Ricky Henderson and into a second-place tie with Jose Canseco for second-most runs in a season (120) in franchise history. The 29-year-old's huge power spike and improved defense in 2019 should at the very least earn him some down-ballot American League MVP votes once the season concludes.
Sep 21 2019Semien went 3-for-3 with a solo home run, two RBI, two runs scored and three walks in Saturday's 12-3 win over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien had a leadoff hitter's dream performance, singling and scoring the opening run in the first inning. He later drew a bases-loaded walk in the second before capping the performance with a solo shot in the fifth. The big game has Semien up to 32 homers, 90 RBI and 119 runs in 155 games this season. The 29-year-old has also added 10 stolen bases while slashing .283/.364/.516, and his .892 OPS ranks third among all shortstops.
Sep 17 2019Semien went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run, two runs and two RBI in the Athletics' 6-5 loss to the Royals on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien continues to swing a hot bat, with this latest multi-hit effort extending his current hitting streak to seven games. He cranked his 31st long ball of the season in this contest, touching up Glenn Sparkman with a second-inning, two-run shot. The 28-year-old continues to enjoy a career year at the dish, with this bringing his slash line up to a healthy .284/.365/.519 in 151 games.
Sep 16 2019Semien went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and a walk Sunday in the Athletics' 6-1 win over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien reached the 30-homer plateau Sunday, joining Matt Chapman (34) and Matt Olson (34) to become the first trio to achieve the feat for the organization since 2001. The shortstop has already established career bests in home runs, doubles, triples, runs and RBI and should continue to supply useful counting stats the rest of the way with Oakland unlikely to rest him as it fights with Cleveland and Tampa Bay for the two available American League wild-card spots.
Sep 14 2019Semien went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run, a walk and two runs overall in a win over the Rangers on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien put a 414-foot exclamation point on the Athletics' 14-run barrage with his ninth-inning blast, which came with Sheldon Neuse aboard and qualified as Semien's career-best 29th homer. The 28-year-old is saving his best for last in what has already been a breakout season, with Friday's production pushing his September average to .375 (18-for-48) with four doubles, one triple, four home runs, 10 RBI, five walks, three stolen bases and 15 runs.
Sep 12 2019Semien went 3-for-5 with a solo home run, a stolen base and two runs in a win over the Astros on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien's second straight three-hit effort included his second round tripper in as many games as well, allowing him to establish a new career high with 28 homers for the campaign. The veteran shortstop is playing his best baseball of a landmark campaign in September, as Wednesday's tally brought his September average to .385 (15-for-39).
Sep 8 2019Semien went 1-for-4 with a two-run triple with a walk and a run in a win over the Tigers on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien began the Athletics' onslaught in earnest with his fourth-inning three-bagger that plated Seth Brown and Ramon Laureano. The slugging shortstop has now equaled a career high with seven triples, while his pair of RBI carried him to a new career best total (77).
Sep 6 2019Semien went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a stolen base and three runs in a win over the Angels on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Semien's stellar night at the plate was just the latest installment in what is shaping up as a career-best season. The veteran shortstop has racked up five multi-hit efforts over his last 10 games, a stretch during which he's also impressively compiled 13 RBI.

Jul 25 2018Semien went 1-for-6 with a double, two runs and three RBI in Tuesday's win over the Rangers.Semien hit a two-run double in the seventh inning and then secured another RBI in the eighth on a force attempt. Semien is having a decent July, hitting .268 with seven doubles, seven RBI, 10 walks and 10 runs scored in 18 games. His power numbers are down from years prior but his 56 runs this season are tied for fifth among all MLB shortstops.
Jul 22 2018Semien went 0-for-2 with a bases-loaded walk and two other base-on-balls in an extra-inning win over the Giants on Saturday. He was also caught stealing on his only attempt.Semien was quite the nuisance to Giants pitching with his keen eye at the plate, including when he coaxed a free pass out of Madison Bumgarner with the bases jammed in the fifth. The shortstop is slashing a rather pedestrian .253/.310/.369 for the season, but he's been a constant presence on the bases in July. Semien has now reached safely in 10 consecutive games dating back to July 8, and he's sporting a .354 on-base percentage overall during his 66 plate appearances during the month.
Jul 14 2018Semien went 2-for-5 with a stolen base Saturday against the Giants.Semien stole third base against Tony Watson in the seventh inning with two outs, and was ultimately stranded there. He has been active on the basepaths of late, now with three steals in his past three games and six since June 29. His career-high mark for a single season is 12, though, he appears poised to top that this season.
Jul 11 2018Semien went 3-for-4 with a triple, two doubles and two RBI in Tuesday's loss to the Astros.Semien slashed a triple -- his second of the year -- off Justin Verlander and later hit a two-run double in the ninth off Hector Rondon to tie the game at 4-4. Semien now has 18 doubles to go along with seven home runs and 33 RBI on the year. The 27-year-old's 49 runs are tied for seventh among MLB shortstops, and he's 7-for-11 in stolen base attempts.
Jul 7 2018Semien went 2-for-4 with a run in a loss to the Indians on Friday.Semien has now compiled four multi-hit efforts over his last seven games, although all nine hits have been singles. Nevertheless, it's a welcome stretch of offensive success for the shortstop, who saw his season average drop 19 points to .248 during June. A boost in power numbers would ideally be the next step in Semien's resurgence, as he hasn't tallied an extra-base hit since June 20.
Jul 2 2018Semien went 2-for-4 with a run in a loss to the Indians on Sunday while also getting picked off first base. He's now hitting .368 (7-for-19) with an RBI, a walk and three runs over the last five games.Semien's average has only gone up a modest six points overall to .251, but the more important aspect of his recent surge is that he may be rounding back into form after hitting just .182 over the first 21 games of June. The shortstop has actually coaxed his strikeout rate down to a career-low 19.5 percent this season, but he's also making hard contact at almost two percentage points lower than last season (28.8 percent, as compared to 2017's 30.3 percent). Coupled with a drop in flyball rate from 42.1 percent to 36.1 percent, Semien is producing only modest power numbers thus far (seven home runs over 375 plate appearances).
Jun 30 2018Semien went 2-for-3 with an RBI single in a win over the Indians on Friday.Semien now has back-to-back multi-hit efforts for only the second time since May 19-22, and he's gone 5-for-11 with two RBI, a walk and two runs in his last three games overall. The 27-year-old shortstop has been able to avoid the injury bug this season after missing a chunk of time following wrist surgery in 2017, but he's slashing a rather lackluster .251/.305/.368 through 367 plate appearances.
Jun 29 2018Semien went 2-for-4 with a run in a win over the Tigers on Thursday.Offensive success has been relatively sparse for the shortstop recently, as even factoring in Thursday's production, he's hit just .198 in June. His tally against the Tigers represented only his fourth multi-hit effort of the month, but it did snap him out of a 2-for-24 slump that had encompassed his previous six games. There were hopes for a resurgent season for Semien after a wrist injury cost him significant time in 2017, but his .248/.302/.366 line through 364 plate appearances is actually slightly poorer overall than the .249/.325/.398 he slashed in 22 additional opportunities last season.
Jun 27 2018Semien is out of the starting lineup against the Tigers on Wednesday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.Semien will receive a breather following 22 straight starts, including a 1-for-4 showing with one run scored during Oakland's comeback victory Tuesday. In his place, Franklin Barreto will start at shortstop and bat eighth.
Jun 20 2018Semien went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, a walk, one RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's win over the Padres. With the game already comfortably in hand and the Athletics leading by 10 in the ninth inning, Semien came through with a run-scoring double to collect his 29th RBI on the year. The 27-year-old is hitting just .221 in June, but he seems to be turning a corner of late. He's now riding a five game hitting streak, clubbing a pair of home runs and three triples in that span.
Jun 17 2018Semeien went 1-for-5 with a solo home run Sunday against the Angels.Semien took Blake Parker deep in the ninth inning to cut the Angels lead to one run. It was his seventh home run of the season and second in as many days. After a hot start to the season, Semien has cooled off considerably, but should continue to score plenty of runs as he hits either first or second in the Athletics' lineup on a nightly basis.
Jun 16 2018Semien went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's win over the Angels.Semien took John Lamb deep in the sixth inning -- marking his sixth homer of the season and first since May 20 -- to kick off what wound up being a crucial four-run inning for the Athletics en route to Saturday's 6-4 victory. While the shortstop is hitting just .204/.259/.333 in June, he's now collected an extra-base hit in consecutive games and will look to keep things rolling.
Jun 9 2018Semien, who went 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs in a win over the Royals on Friday, is 5-for-8 over his last two games. The shortstop had started June off going just 1-for-19 over his first five games, but he's busted out of that malaise in impressive fashion over the first two installments of the four-game set against the Royals. Semien's power game is a bit behind its usual pace thus far this season (five home runs over 287 plate appearances), but he's actually making hard contact at a career-high 31.2 percent-clip.
Jun 8 2018Semien went 2-for-4 with an RBI single in a win over the Royals on Thursday. The struggling shortstop had been mired in an 0-for-14 slump over his last three games, and had started June with a 1-for-19 tally overall. However, he knocked in a key insurance run Thursday as part of his first multi-hit effort since May 27, and fantasy owners can only hope his solid production is a harbinger of a resurgence at the plate.
Jun 3 2018Semien went 1-for-5 with a double and a run in a loss to the Royals on Saturday.Semien officially returned from paternity leave for Friday's game, but he entered the game as a defensive replacement late and never logged an official plate appearance. However, he was back in the starting nine Saturday, hitting safely for the fourth time in the least five games with an official at-bat. Semien's season line is a serviceable .267/.318/.383, but he's been on a bit of a power drought, not having homered over his last 41 plate appearances (nine games) despite making hard contact at a solid 36.0 percent clip during that stretch.
Jun 1 2018Semien was reinstated from the paternity list Friday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. He's back on the active roster but Semien hasn't yet arrived to the ballpark and is not listed in the lineup Friday. The hope is that Semien will arrive shortly before game time and serve off the bench before resuming his role as the A's primary shortstop Saturday.
May 30 2018Semien was placed on paternity leave Wednesday.Semien will spend at least a few days away from the team while on paternity leave. In a corresponding move, Josh Lucas was recalled from Triple-A Nashville.
May 23 2018Semien went 2-for-5 with an RBI single and a run in an extra-innings loss to the Mariners.Semien has now compiled three straight two-hit efforts and has knocked in four runs altogether over the last two games. The 27-year-old has been impressively steady throughout May, as he's now racked up eight two-hit tallies and has reached safely in 10 of the last 11 games overall.
May 20 2018Semien went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and a run scored in Sunday's 9-2 win over the Blue Jays.Semien went deep for the fifth time this season in the fifth inning, launching a two-run home run against Danny Barnes. Following Sunday's stellar performance, the 27-year-old shortstop is slashing .276/.323/.404 and has driven in 23 RBI through 47 games. He'll look to keep hitting at a similar clip moving forward, as the Athletics begin a three-game series with the Mariners on Tuesday.
May 17 2018Semien went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in a loss to the Red Sox on Wednesday.Semien got to Chris Sale in the fourth, launching a 372-foot shot over the Green Monster in the fifth with Chad Pinder aboard to cut the Athletics' deficit to 3-2. It was the shortstop's first homer since April 23, but he's been hitting consistently since just prior to that game. Factoring in Wednesday's production, Semien has 10 two-hit efforts over his last 23 contests on his way to a .306 average with five doubles, three round trippers and nine RBI across 104 plate appearances.
May 11 2018Semien went 2-for-6 with a double, a run scored and four RBI in Friday's 10-5 win over the Yankees. The A's leadoff hitter came into the game with only one RBI in his prior 14 contests, but the bottom of the order was able to provide Semien with plenty of run-producing opportunities on a night when even player in the lineup got at least one hit. The 27-year-old now carries a .265/.318/.383 slash line on the season.
May 9 2018Semien went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs in a loss to the Astros on Tuesday.Semien did his part out of the top of the order, extending his hitting streak to five games. Although he's been productive, the 27-year-old shortstop's bat has been a bit light on pop lately. Semien has only mustered one extra-base hit -- a double -- over his first eight games of May, and he hasn't homered since April 23, a span of 13 contests.
May 5 2018Semien went 1-for-4 with an RBI single, a walk and a run in a win over the Orioles on Friday.Semien gave the Athletics some breathing room with an eighth-inning single that plated Jonathan Lucroy. It was the shortstop's first RBI since April 23, an eight-game drought that represented his longest such stretch of the season. Despite the recent lack of timely hitting, Semien has remained productive, reaching safely in 10 of his last 12 games.
Apr 28 2018Semien went 2-for-4 with two runs in a win over the Astros on Friday.Semien continued producing out of the leadoff spot Friday, posting his fifth two-hit effort of the last six games. The hot-hitting shortstop has reached safely in eight straight contests overall, a stretch during which he's raised his average to 39 points to .286.
Apr 26 2018Semien went 2-for-4 with a run in a loss to the Rangers on Wednesday.Semien's hitting streak now sits at five games, and he's reached safely in seven consecutive contests overall. The red-hot shortstop has boosted his average by 31 points to .278 since April 18, a stretch during which he's churned out five multi-hit efforts.
Apr 24 2018Semien went 2-for-6 with a solo home run and two runs in a win over the Rangers on Monday.Semien has three straight two-hit efforts and has accomplished the feat in four of the last five games overall. The 27-year-old also has a pair of round trippers in the last three games -- with Monday's blast snapping a 3-3 tie in the ninth -- and he's now compiled 10 of his 13 RBI for the season over the last 14 contests.
Apr 23 2018Semien went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs in a win over the Red Sox on Sunday.Semien wielded a hot bat over the weekend, going 4-for-7 with Sunday's double, a home run, an RBI, a walk and five runs. The 27-year-old has been a constant presence on the basepaths in April, posting five multi-hit efforts and reaching safely in 18 of 19 games during the month.
Apr 21 2018Semien went 2-for-3 with a home run, three runs scored and an RBI while also stealing a base Saturday against the Red Sox.Semien scored all three of his team's runs Saturday, with the highlight being a solo home run against Chris Sale in the third inning. He also stole his second base of the season in as many attempts. While many of his numbers don't stand out as impressive in the early going, he has benefitted from batting exclusively first or second in the A's lineup, scoring 16 runs with just a .320 on-base percentage.
Apr 16 2018Semien went 2-for-4 with a run in a 2-1 win over the Mariners on Sunday.Semien and Jed Lowrie had the only multi-hit outings for the Athletics in the pitchers' duel. The 27-year-old has only one home run through his first 15 games, but he's been a consistent force at the plate in April; factoring in Sunday's production, he's now reached safely in all 13 games during the month.
Apr 12 2018Semien went 2-for-5 with a walk, a double, three runs scored and four RBI in Wednesday's 16-6 rout of the Dodgers. The shortstop now has a nine-game hitting streak and has reached base safely in all 13 games this season, but it's been by the skin of his teeth -- this was Semien's first multi-hit game since Opening Day, and his .268/.323/.393 line and 29 percent strikeout rate aren't ideal for a leadoff hitter. He's been productive so far, but there's still plenty of room for improvement, and if the 27-year-old falls into a slump, Franklin Barreto is on the bench and ready to step in.
Apr 8 2018Semien went 1-for-4 with a two-run single and a walk in Saturday's 7-3 win over the Angels. He slid down to second in the order while Matt Joyce handled leaoff duty, but Semien parlayed the move into his first multi-RBI outing of 2018. The 27-year-old shortstop extended his hitting streak to six games and has now knocked in four his five runs on the campaign during his last four contests. Semien's early success isn't necessarily surprising given his solid spring, and his overall value will see a nice boost once the extra-base hits, including home runs, start to kick in.
Apr 6 2018Semien went 1-for-5 with a run scored in Thursday's loss to the Rangers.Semien extended his hit streak to four games and he appears to be locked in as the Athletics' leadoff hitter. The San Francisco native's 12 strikeouts in 34 at-bats is concerning, as this sample size, albeit small, suggests Semien hasn't improved on his 22 percent strikeout rate from 2017. Still, the 27-year-old bats first for a team that has the most aggregate hits across the league so far in 2018, meaning Semien should be a solid source for runs and RBI.
Mar 29 2018Semien went 3-for-5 with an RBI, two runs scored, one walk and one strikeout Thursday against the Angels.Semien was quietly pushed up in the A's batting order in 2017, batting nearly exclusively in either the first or second spot in the lineup. In that role, he managed to post a 9.8 BB%, which helped him score 53 runs in just 386 plate appearances. On Thursday, he was again slotted into the second spot in the A's lineup, and if he can maintain that spot, he should produce counting stats more consistently. Given his established capability of producing power and speed numbers, Semien appears to be trending up as a fantasy asset.
Mar 27 2018Semien may split leadoff duties with Matt Joyce this season, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.Semien was expected to handle the role of leadoff hitter for the 2018 season, but manager Bob Melvin indicated he likes Matt Joyce at the top of the order against right-handed starters and Semien for left-handers. The A's starting shortstop struggled against southpaws in 2017 with a .224/.303/.367 slash line in 109 plate appearances, although he missed nearly half the season with a wrist injury and his career numbers (.275/.323/.468) may more accurately reflect his expected splits.
Mar 26 2018Semien, who went 0-for-3 in Sunday's 5-1 Cactus League loss to the Giants, is expected to provide a unique mix of power and speed out of the leadoff spot in 2018, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports. The versatile shortstop has made a case for a potentially explosive 2018 this spring with a .309 average, a pair of doubles, one home run and four RBI. Now fully recovered from the wrist surgery that cost him 74 games last season, Semien will look to up his OBP for a third straight campaign while putting a dent in his 22 percent strikeout rate as both a table-setter and long-ball supplier at the top of the Athletics' lineup.
Mar 2 2018Semien, who went 1-for-2 with a walk in Thursday's 9-4 Cactus League loss to the Rangers, is hitting .455 (5-for-11) with a walk and a run over four spring training games.Semien is reportedly a strong candidate to handle lead-off duties to open 2018, although that figures to get definitively sorted out over the course of the spring. Playing on a one-year, $3.125 million deal this season, Semien will have plenty of motivation to bounce back from last year's injury-riddled campaign. Wrist surgery limited the 27-year-old to 85 games in 2017, although he was able to produce a respectable 10 home runs and 40 RBI in that relatively modest sample. Now at full health and looking for a long-term deal, Semien will look to provide another boost to a batting average that he pulled up from a 2016 figure of .238 to .249 last season, while also getting back over the 20-homer mark that he'd reached two campaigns ago.
Feb 26 2018Semien will likely start the 2018 season as Oakland's leadoff hitter, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.Semien dealt with a wrist injury a season ago, and played in just 85 games for the A's. The 27-year-old hopes to stay healthy in 2018 and looks to improve at the plate after hitting .249 with 10 home runs and 40 RBI. He finished with 27 home runs and 75 RBI in 2016. Expect Semien to begin the season in the leadoff spot and to start at shortstop for the Athletics.
Jan 12 2018Semien agreed to a one-year, $3.125 million deal with the A's on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports reports. This marked the first offseason he was arbitration eligible, and the shortstop will cash in after making $545,000 a year ago. During the 2017 season, he slashed .249/.325/.398 with 10 home runs, 40 RBI and 12 stolen bases in 85 games after missing nearly half the year due to a right wrist injury. Heading into this upcoming season, he should provide decent value on the bases, but is unlikely to move the needle at the dish.
Sep 27 2017Semien went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 6-3 loss to the Mariners.Semien is seemingly making up for lost time as the season comes to a close, as he's now smacked a trio of round trippers in the last six contests, including in two straight. The slugging shortstop was robbed of nearly two months earlier this season due to a wrist injury, and he only notched five homers in the two months between his return and Sept. 6. His recent power surge has led to eight extra-base hits (four doubles, four homers) and a .351 wOBA over the 75 plate appearances he's seen across the subsequent 16 games.
Sep 26 2017Semien went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Monday's 7-1 loss to the Mariners.Semien produced the only run of the night for the Athletics with a sixth-inning solo shot off Felix Hernandez. The shortstop is swinging a hot bat over the last seven contests, going 10-for-30 with three doubles, two homers and five RBI over that stretch.
Sep 20 2017Semien went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and three RBI in Wednesday's win over the Tigers. The 27-year-old accounted for all of the A's offense in a 3-2 victory. He came into Wednesday's game batting .229/.299/.343 with one home run and 19 strikeouts in 70 September at-bats. Semien suffered a wrist injury early in the year, and that was likely a big factor in his power decline this season.
Sep 19 2017Semien is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Tigers.Semien notched two hits and three runs in Monday's game, but he will be held out Tuesday with manager Bob Melvin looking to get fellow shortstop Franklin Barreto a start against a left-handed starter. Tuesday's game will be just the second Semien has not started since Aug. 22, so he figures to return to the lineup Wednesday.
Sep 19 2017Semien went 2-for-5 with three runs in Monday's 8-3 win over the Tigers.Semien did an impressive job setting the table from the top of the order, generating his fifth multi-hit effort of September in the process. Despite a sub-par .299 OBP for the month, Semien has already crossed the plate on 12 occasions in 16 games.
Sep 9 2017Semien went 2-for-5 with a grand slam and a second run scored in Friday's 9-8 win over the Astros. His seventh-inning blast, Semien's sixth homer of the year, tied the game at 7-7 to set up some ninth-inning heroics by Jed Lowrie. It was Semien's first home run since Aug. 16, but despite the power outage he's been productive at the plate, slashing .295/.348/.443 over his last 14 games with 11 runs and 11 RBI.
Sep 9 2017Semien is not in the Athletics' lineup Saturday for Game 2 of their doubleheader, Joe Stiglich of NBC Sports California reports. He led off in Game 1 and went 1-for-3 with three walks and one run scored. Semien will take a breather but likely will return to action Sunday, if he doesn't appear as a substitute. Franklin Barreto will take his place at shortstop.
Aug 28 2017Semien went 1-for-3 with three RBI from a fielder's choice and a two-run single in Sunday's 8-3 win over the Rangers. He also walked twice and scored once.Semien has hit safely in 13 of his last 16 contests, a span during which he's also compiled four doubles, a triple, a home run and all 10 of his RBI for the month. The surge has already boosted his season average 23 points to .258 since Aug. 1.
Aug 24 2017Semien (wrist) went 3-for-5 with two RBI from a single and a double in Wednesday's 8-7 extra-inning loss to the Orioles. He also walked and scored once.Semien was given a day off Tuesday due to irritation of the scar tissue in his surgically repaired wrist, but Wednesday's performance seemed to confirm that it was nothing too serious. The slugging shortstop has compiled seven multi-hit efforts in August, five of which have come in the last eight contests.
Aug 23 2017Semien (wrist) returns to the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Orioles.Semien was out of the lineup for Tuesday's contest while dealing with irritation of the scar tissue in his surgically repaired wrist. The shortstop appears to ready for action, and was reportedly available off the bench during Tuesday's affair. He will hit second in the order while manning his typical position in the field for the series finale.
Aug 22 2017Semien (wrist) is out of Tuesday's lineup, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.Slusser reports that Semein is OK, and he is listed as available off the bench on the lineup card, so he should be back in the lineup any day. Chad Pinder will start at shortstop and hit seventh.
Aug 21 2017Semien is dealing with irritation of the scar tissue in his surgically repaired wrist and will be out Tuesday as a result, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.Semien isn't expected to miss more than the one game. He was out from April 15 through July 5 with the injury, so the A's will gladly take it safe to avoid a aggravating the injury. Semien is hitting a .280/.329/.400 in August over 18 games.
Aug 15 2017Semien went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run in Monday's 6-2 loss to the Royals.Semien extended his hitting streak to six games with Monday's production, which included his first triple of the campaign. The slugging shortstop has yet to hit a home run in August, but he's slashing a respectable .269/.339/.365 over his first 13 games of the month. Semien has enjoyed an excellent second half overall and has raised his average 101 points to .246 since July 18.
Aug 1 2017Semien went 2-for-5 with a grand slam and two runs in Monday's 8-5 win over the Giants. The slugging shortstop sixth-inning blast erased a 3-2 deficit in spectacular fashion and gave the Athletics a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Semien took some time to hit his stride at the plate after returning from his long layoff from a wrist injury, but he finished July by slashing .360/.418/.560 over 55 plate appearances in his last 12 games of the month, a stretch during which he also posted a .416 wOBA.
Jul 28 2017Semien went 3-for-4 with an RBI single, a walk and a run in Thursday's 8-4 extra-inning loss to the Blue Jays. The surging shortstop logged the only three-hit effort on the night for the Athletics, his third multihit game in the last seven contests. Semien also has six of his 11 RBI on the season during that stretch and has boosted his average 85 points to .230 since July 18.
Jul 27 2017Semien went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Blue Jays.Semien erased an early 2-0 deficit with his 362-foot shot to left in the fifth, the third time he's gone deep in his injury-shortened 2017. The 26-year-old has hit safely in six of his last seven games, compiling a .370 average, two home runs and five RBI over that span.
Jul 23 2017Semien went 2-for-4 with a solo home run during Sunday's win over the Mets.Semien has been limited to just 104 plate appearances this season, and his .209/.337/.326 slash line highlights his struggles. However, he owns the power-speed combo to be a solid fantasy asset moving forward, and the shortstop might be kick-starting a heater with an active four-game hitting streak. He could be a potential upgrade in deeper settings.
Jul 22 2017Semien went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI singles, a stolen base and a run in Friday's 7-5 loss to the Mets. The slugging shortstop has been very sluggish at the plate since returning from his wrist injury, but perhaps Friday's outburst will serve as a springboard. The extent of Semien's struggles is such that despite his four-hit night raising his average a whopping 41 points, it still sits at a sub-Mendoza Line .192. However, the 26-year-old has only logged 43 at-bats overall since returning on July 6, and he certainly has the upside to considerably improve his numbers across the board in the second half.
Jul 21 2017The Athletics approached Semien with discussions of a contract extension during the offseason, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.Among Oakland's ongoing sale, Semien's name has not been included strongly in rumors. They apparently want to build around him as part of their long-term middle infield with Franklin Barreto. Semien is batting just .151 with one homer and five stolen bases in 90 plate appearances, though he missed most of the year since fracturing his wrist in mid-April, so this slow re-entry into fantasy relevance isn't surprising. With more reps and a recovery of game shape, he could wind up a solid fantasy asset down the stretch.
Jul 8 2017Semien went 1-for-3 with a two-run double in Friday's 7-2 loss to the Mariners.Semien gave the Athletics a 2-1 lead with his second-inning two-bagger, giving him his first RBI since April 8. The hard-hitting shortstop has a pair of hits in his two games back from an extended stay on the disabled list with his wrist injury and appears to be swinging the bat without limitations. While he still has a considerable way to go to pull his .186/.364/.256 line to respectability, the fact he's hit safely in his first two contests is naturally a step in the right direction.
Jul 8 2017Semien went 1-for-5 with a solo home run, his first of the season, Saturday in the Athletics' win over the Mariners. His moon shot off Andrew Moore offered a promising sign, considering a wrist injury has limited him to 60 plate appearances so far. It'll probably take Semien time to regenerate a good portion of the power that helped him plant 27 home runs in 2016. Of course, that probably will come as he again struggles with batting average. At least he should steal some bases to help his fantasy owners along the way.
Jul 7 2017Semien (wrist) went 1-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base and two runs in Thursday's 7-4 win over the Mariners.Semien wasted no time getting back into the swing of things in his first game action since April 14, even getting the green light on the basepaths. The 26-year-old had been scuffling at the plate before his injury, but had only logged 35 official at-bats before being sidelined. With what Semien and the team hope will be a much more extended sample in front of him, the slugging shorstop will look to get back to the type of production he proved capable of in a breakout 2016 campaign (56 extra-base hits, 75 RBI).
Jul 6 2017Semien (wrist) was reinstated from the disabled list Thursday. As anticipated, the 26-year-old shortstop will resume his regular duties for the Athletics ahead of Thursday's series opener with the Mariners. Semien did miss a good chunk of time due to this injury, so it wouldn't be surprising to see the Athletics ease him back into action. Once he does get back to full duty, however, he'll likely take over as the primary shortstop and knock Chad Pinder to the bench. To make room for him on the active roster, Jharel Cotton (finger) was sent to the disabled list and Andrew Triggs (hip) was moved to the 60-day DL.
Jul 5 2017Athletics manager Bob Melvin confirmed Semien (wrist) would return from the 60-day disabled list during the team's series with the Mariners that begins Thursday, Ron Kroichick of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The Athletics haven't tipped their hand on how they'll open up a roster spot for Semien, but it's likely that prized prospect Franklin Barreto, who has been seeing regular time at shortstop, will be optioned back to Triple-A Nashville to facilitate the move. Semien, who has out since mid-April after fracturing his right wrist, has performed well during his eight-game rehab assignment that has included stops in the California and Pacific Coast Leagues, going 10-for-31 with two home runs and three doubles. The extra-base knocks offer encouragement that his surgically-repaired wrist won't limit his power production as he prepares to settle back into an everyday role up the middle for the Athletics.
Jul 2 2017Athletics manager Bob Melvin said that he's hopeful Semien (wrist) will be ready to come off the 60-day disabled list during the club's four-game series with the Mariners that begins Thursday, Joe Stiglich of NBC Sports California reports.Semien has been sidelined since mid April with the fractured right wrist, but after making his sixth rehab appearance Saturday, he looks to be rapidly approaching full health. During those contests, Semien has turned in three multi-hit efforts, an indication the wrist hasn't provided many complications with his swing mechanics. He played a nine-inning game with Triple-A Nashville on Saturday and may only need one or two more full games before the Athletics feel comfortable signing off on his return. Once he's activated, Semien would likely take over as the primary option at shortstop, displacing top prospect Franklin Barreto.
Jun 25 2017Semien (wrist) went 3-for-5 with two RBI from a run-scoring single and a home run in High-A Stockton's win over Modesto on Saturday and is hitting .500 with a pair of doubles over his first two games with the Ports. So far, so good for the rehabbing shortstop, whose rehab assignment is expected to be an extended one according to manager Bob Melvin. Semien underwent wrist surgery back on April 18 and has been progressively ramping up his activity since late May. If all goes well, Semien projects to return to the big-league club at some point in July.
Jun 21 2017Semien's (wrist) rehab assignment will be extensive according to manager Bob Melvin, Hank Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.Melvin made it a point to emphasize that Semien's assignment, which is scheduled to begin Friday at High-A Stockton, will not just be a matter of a few games, instead remarking it will be "almost like spring training". The slugging shortstop has been sidelined since April 14 with his injury and has logged just 46 plate appearances in 2017.
Jun 19 2017Semien (wrist) is scheduled to start a rehab assignment with High-A Stockton on Friday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.Semien was able to get through batting practice over the weekend without a hitch, clearing the way for him to return to game action later in the week. Seeing as the 26-year-old has been sidelined for most of the season, he'll likely need at least a few rehab games before rejoining the Athletics. If he continues to progress without any setbacks, Semien could return to the majors sometime in early July.
Jun 16 2017Semien (wrist), who took batting practice before Friday's game for the first time since his injury, could begin a minor-league rehab assignment as early as next week, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports. "He's progressed really nicely to get to this point, and we all know he wants to get out there and play and get on a rehab assignment as soon as he can," manager Bob Melvin said. "If we feel good about where he's at, then in potentially a week or so maybe he looks to get out on a rehab assignment."The slugging shortstop has been improving at a brisk clip and appears to be on the brink of a return to game action. Semien has already missed 56 games as a result of his April 18 surgery, which has provided promising rookie Chad Pinder extended playing time. Assuming he doesn't encounter any setbacks the rest of the way, Semien currently projects for an early July return to the big-league club.

Assuming he doesn't encounter any setbacks the rest of the way, Semien currently projects for an early July return to the big-league club.
Jun 15 2017Semien (wrist) will take batting practice prior to Friday's game against the Yankees, Joe Stiglich of NBC Sports California reports. This is the first time that Semien will be able to do full swinging off a pitched ball, which is great progress considering he just progressed to soft toss drills Sunday. There's no timetable for him to head out onto a rehab assignment, although he certainly is getting closer to that event happening, making an early July return reasonable.
Jun 11 2017Semien was able to hit soft toss Sunday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.Semien had previously been hitting off a tee, so hitting soft-toss throws amounts to incremental progress. The true test for Semien's wrist won't come until he's able to take batting practice, but it's unclear how close he is to reaching that phase of the recovery process. In the meantime, Chad Pinder will continue to serve as the Athletics' everyday shortstop while the team awaits Semien's return from the disabled list.
Jun 7 2017Semien (wrist) hit off a tee with his game bat Wednesday, the first time he has done so since undergoing surgery, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. It's another small but positive step in the recovery process for Semien, who is likely out until at least July as he continues to rebuild strength. The shortstop clearly has some monumental hurdles to clear before he's able to return to regular action, meaning Chad Pinder will continue receiving plenty of opportunities to prove his place.
Jun 5 2017Semien (wrist) is being brought along slowly in his rehab and may not return until July, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports Monday. This shouldn't come as much of a surprise, as Semien is on the 60-day disabled list and isn't eligible to return until mid-June anyway. Semien may not be able to count on a full-time job upon his return, as Chad Pinder has been raking at shortstop in his absence, with a .904 OPS and seven home runs over 30 games.
Jun 2 2017Semien (wrist) is throwing over the top from 75 feet and hitting every other day, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.Semien is making incremental steps towards a full recovery after undergoing wrist surgery in April and is eligible to come off the disabled list in mid-June. It would seem he still has a ways to go before returning to the big leagues, however, since the A's would like to see more everyday activity before initiating a minor-league rehab assignment. Adam Rosales and Chad Pinder will continue seeing time at shortstop until Semien makes his long-awaited return.
May 30 2017Semien (wrist) played catch Tuesday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. This is the first semblance of baseball activities Semien has taken part in since undergoing wrist surgery in April. He'll look to ramp up his throwing in the coming days as he aims for a return during the month of June. Adam Rosales will continue to man shortstop in his stead.
May 19 2017Semien had the cast on his injured wrist removed Friday, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.Semien will work with trainers over the next few days to determine his timetable for getting back into baseball activity. He will likely require a substantial rehab assignment before he can return to the diamond, so it would still be a surprise if he suits up for the Athletics before the end of May.
May 14 2017Semien (wrist) remains without a timetable for having his cast removed, John Hickey of the East Bay Times reports.Semien is scheduled to be reevaluated again in early June, at which point the Athletics could have a better idea of when he'll be able to take the cast off and resume baseball activities. For now, it looks like Semien will be limited to cardio workouts while he waits for the wrist to heal up. Adam Rosales has been serving as the Athletics' everyday shortstop while Semien has been sidelined.
Apr 20 2017Semien (hand) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Thursday. This doesn't come as too much of a surprise, as the 26-year-old just had six screws inserted into his scaphoid bone to help repair a fracture. Semien will be reevaluated in six weeks, at which point there may be a clearer timetable for his return. He is eligible to come of the DL in mid-June, though it remains uncertain whether he'll be activated then. In the meantime, Adam Rosales and Chad Pinder will continue to fill in at shortstop in his stead.
Apr 18 2017Semien (wrist) underwent successful surgery Tuesday, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.Semien's surgery involved getting six screws inserted into his scaphoid bone to repair his fracture. As was previously reported, the 26-year-old will be reevaluated in six weeks. Until then, Adam Rosales and Chad Pinder will handle the shortstop duties.
Apr 17 2017Semien will have surgery on his right wrist after a CT scan revealed a fracture of the scaphoid bone, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.Although the shortstop was initially diagnosed with a bone contusion, further tests revealed troubling news for Semien and the A's, as the 26-year-old's ailing wrist will require surgery to heal. There is currently no timetable for his recovery, though he won't even be reevaluated for another six weeks after the procedure, so it could be awhile until he is back with the A's. Adam Rosales has been filling in at shortstop during his absence and could see the majority of reps, though Chad Pinder was also called up as middle infield depth and could get a look as well.
Apr 16 2017Semien (wrist) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday.Semien underwent an MRI on his ailing right wrist Saturday, and although he was diagnosed with merely a contusion, the Athletics ordered a CT scan Monday to further investigate the issue. While it's possible those scans won't reveal any new information, the Athletics will err on the side of caution and shelve Semien for at least the next week and a half in order to avoid an aggravation. Chad Pinder was recalled from Triple-A Nashville in a corresponding move and is expected to share duties at shortstop with Adam Rosales for the duration of Semien's absence.
Apr 15 2017Semien (wrist) was diagnosed with a bone contusion in his right wrist and will receive a CT scan Monday, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.Semien was held out of Saturday's lineup after the ailing wrist was reportedly inhibiting him during Friday's contest, but it seems like a bigger problem has been avoided at this time. The CT scan may reveal more on Monday, but for the time being, Semien should be considered day-to-day. Adam Rosales could pick up some extra playing time in his stead.
Apr 15 2017Semien has been dealing with an injury to his right wrist and will undergo an MRI on Saturday, Joe Stiglich of NBC Sports reports.Manager Bob Melvin says the ailment has been nagging Semien while hitting and hindered his throwing during Friday's loss. The injury could serve as an explanation for a rough start at the plate this season, the shortstop is hitting just .171 with 11 strikeouts over 11 games. The team can only hope it's nothing serious, but if Semien is forced to miss extended time, backup Adam Rosales will be in line for increased playing time.
Apr 15 2017Semien is not in the Athletics' starting lineup Saturday against the Astros. The day off comes in the midst of a rough start for Semien. The 26-year-old shortstop is hitting just .171 with 11 strikeouts over the first 11 games, serving as a black hole at the top of the order. On the bright side, he's been able to get on base, drawing 10 walks thus far. Adam Rosales fills his spot Saturday,
Apr 15 2017Semien went 1-for-2 with a double and two walks in Friday's 7-2 loss to the Astros.Semien continues to operate out of the leadoff spot, and Friday's production boosted his OBP to .370. The 26-year-old has been able to find his way on base by flashing the improved patience at the plate he'd vowed to demonstrate this season. Semien has already walked 10 times over 11 games and has notched four steals in as many attempts, despite the fact that his average sits at an unsightly .171 through his first 46 plate appearances. With a career-high 27 homers last season, it would also seem to be just a matter of time before the slugging shortstop's power kicks and he begins to work himself out of the early-season struggles he's encountered.
Apr 13 2017Semien went 0-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and his fourth stolen base of the season in Wednesday's 8-3 win over the Royals. The 26-year-old came into the season better known for his power and strikeouts but seems to be taking his new leadoff duties very seriously, walking eight times in nine games to begin 2017. Semien's previous career high in steals is only 11, set back in 2015, but at this rate he could blow past that mark in May. All that said, he is hitting .172 (5-for-29) and is still looking for his first homer of the campaign, so while the shortstop is providing value it's likely not coming in the form Semien's fantasy investors expected.
Apr 13 2017Semien went 0-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored ad his fourth stolen base of the season in Wednesday's 8-3 win over the Royals. The 26-year-old came into the season better known for his power and strikeouts but seems to be taking his new leadoff duties very seriously, walking eight times in nine games to begin 2017. Apr 7 2017Semien went 1-for-3 with a walk, run and stolen base in Thursday's 5-1 win over the Angels.Semien's third-inning single to deep center and Mike Trout's subsequent error while playing the ball brought home Adam Rosales to open the scoring for Oakland. The slugging shortstop also swiped his first bag of the season and has now hit safely in three straight games.
Mar 30 2017Semien, who was 0-for-3 against the Royals on Monday in his return from an illness, went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 15-12 Cactus League loss to the Cubs.Semien, who blasted a career-best 27 homers in 2016, launched only his second round-tripper of spring off Cubs starter John Lackey in the third inning. The 26-year-old brings plenty of pop but will look to improve his 22.4 percent strikeout rate from 2016 in the coming season.
Mar 27 2017Semien (illness) will start at shorstop and bat in the cleanup spot for Monday's Cactus League game against the Royals.Semien was held out the past two days with an illness, but there was never much concern that he'd be sidelined for long. The 26-year-old is expected to lock down a spot in the heart of the order for the Athletics after slugging 27 homers and 27 doubles in 2016.
Mar 25 2017Semien was scratched from the lineup Saturday due to an illness, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The shortstop could miss a day or two, but the ailment isn't likely to threaten his availability for Opening Day. Expectations are fairly high this season for the 26-year-old, who clubbed 27 homers to go with 75 RBI in 2016.
Mar 21 2017Semien (elbow) went 0-for-3 with a stolen base and a run in Monday's spring league game.Semien is 0-for-7 since returning to spring action after being hit by a pitch last week, though he does have a stolen base and a run over that period. The 26-year-old has cooled off since he started spring on a tear, but he'll head into the season with high expectations after posting a career-high 27 homers and 75 RBI.
Mar 17 2017Semien left Friday's Cactus League game after being hit by a pitch on the left elbow, Joe Stiglich of CSN California reports. The reported noted that while Semien left the game, he stayed in the dugout, which would suggest his removal was largely precautionary. There's a chance the A's could send Semien for an X-ray in the coming days if there's some lingering soreness, but the fact that they didn't send him for one immediately is encouraging.
Mar 12 2017Semien, who has a .346/.333./.538 line through 26 spring at-bats, is focused on getting on base more consistently in 2017, John Shea of SFGate.com reports. "You see if you can shrink the zone a little, wait for your pitch and be more patient instead of being overly aggressive and getting yourself out," Semien said. "You do that, you're probably going to walk a little more and get more hits."Semien experienced an impressive power surge in 2016, posting career highs in doubles (27), home runs (27), RBI (75), slugging (.435) and OPS (.735). He also set a new high-water mark with 51 walks, those came over 621 plate apperances, and he posted just a .238 average and .300 OBP, numbers that he's looking to boost significantly in the coming campaign. The slugging shorstop actually was among the more patient hitters in baseball at the plate, as the 4.16 pitches per plate appearance that he averaged ranked him ninth in the AL and 19th in the majors. However, he had a notable weakness with two-strike at-bats, particularly on full counts, a scenario in which he hit .164 and struck out 29 times. He also hit an anemic .043 on 0-2 counts, .170 in 1-2 counts and .173 in 2-2 counts, further illustrating his struggles with his back against the wall. Semien will therefore look to have greater discipline in those situations, which could propel his all-around game to the next level. "That's probably the next step for him," manager Bob Melvin said of Semien's 3-2 approach. "Obviously, he's gotten to the point where he can get into the count. It's finishing it off and maybe taking a walk and not trying to chase a pitch. Sometimes that's tough for a power guy to do."
Mar 8 2017Semien went 3-for-3 with a pair of run-scoring singles, an RBI double, a run and a stolen base in Tuesday's 21-13 Cactus League win over the Diamondbacks.Semien now has a team-high seven RBI and is slashing .333/.333/.611 over 18 at-bats. Based on early returns, the 26-year-old appears primed to build on a 2016 campaign in which he posted a career-high 27 homers and 75 RBI while boasting a personal-best .611 slugging percentage and .197 ISO.
Feb 28 2017Semien went 1-for-3 with two-run home run in Tuesday's 5-4 Cactus League victory over the Indians. The slugging shortstop took a Mike Clevinger pitch deep to right field with Jed Lowrie aboard in the first, his first homer of the spring. Despite a drop in batting average and OBP over the previous year, Semien exploded for a career-high 27 doubles, 27 homers and 75 RBI last season, which led to .435 slugging and .735 OPS figures that also represented high-water marks. His homer Tuesday served as his second hit over three spring contests, while also generating his first pair of RBI.

Sep 15 2016Semien went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and four RBI in Thursday's 14-5 win over the Royals.Semien helped his teammates pile on as they completed a four-game sweep, capping Oakland's bonanza with a three-run homer in the eighth inning. He also contributed a run-scoring double earlier in the contest, matching his season high for RBI in a single game. Semien's struggled during the second half, but his bat came alive during the Royals series with a pair of homers and 10 RBI. The slugging shortstop now has 25 home runs and 66 RBI on the season -- both career highs -- but is slashing just .235/.296/.436.
Sep 2 2016Semien was 0-for-3 Friday night against the Red Sox to lower his average to .239.Semien has been hanging out around .240 most of the season, but up until the last month he had at least been pairing that with nice power. Semien's pop has dried up recently as he only has one homer to go with six RBI since August first. Semien does have 23 bombs on the season, but could be tiring as he heads to the finish line of a long season.
Aug 26 2016The A's activated Semien from the paternity list Friday.Semien is back with the A's after being away from the team for three days to be with his wife and newborn son. Expect him to resume his role as Oakland's everyday shortstop moving forward.
Aug 24 2016Semien was placed on the paternity list Wednesday, as expected, the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser reports. He was away from the team Tuesday and will miss another game Wednesday to be with his wife and newborn son. However, Semien will return for Oakland's next game Friday against the Cardinals, and figures to serve as the everyday shortstop through the end of the season. Reliever J.B. Wendelken was recalled Wednesday as a corresponding move and Chad Pinder figures to get the start at shortstop Wednesday.
Aug 23 2016Semien is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Indians. He is listed on the lineup card as a reserve but Semien is not with the team Tuesday, according to Joe Stiglich of CSN California, after Semien and his wife welcomed a son into the world Monday night. The A's are expected to move Semien to the paternity list Wednesday but he should be back for Friday's series opener in St. Louis.
Aug 22 2016Semien is expected to be placed on the paternity list in the near future, John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group reports.Contrary to earlier reports, Semien has yet to be placed on the paternity list, although the move will be made in the near future. While Semien could technically be available for Monday's game, he's with his family awaiting the arrival of his child. At this point in time, look for Chad Pinder to start at shortstop and bat ninth Monday evening.
Aug 22 2016Semien was placed on the paternity list and is out of Monday's lineup, John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group reports.Chad Pinder will start at shortstop Monday, as Semien is on the club's paternity list. Oakland hasn't said when Semien will retrun, but it's likely that he'll be back by this weekend's series against the Cardinals.
Aug 17 2016Semien will be placed on the paternity list at some point in the next week, the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser reports. It is not clear when Semien will need to leave the team for the birth of his child, but according to Slusser, it will be sometime in the next week. Chad Pinder was recalled from Triple-A on Wednesday, and figures to play shortstop when the time comes for Semien to leave the team for a few days.
Aug 12 2016Semien was 4-for-4 on Friday night with two runs, bumping his average up to .244.Semien has provided nice power this season with 23 bombs, but his batting average has been a concern most of the season. It was a good sign to see Semien put together four knocks to raise his average seven points in one night, but even better than all four hits were line drives. With all the A's injuries and roster moves, Semien will likely spend more time near the top of the lineup, which will benefit his run and RBI numbers to go with the power.
Jul 27 2016Semien homered in a 2-for-4 game with two runs scored in Tuesday's win over the Rangers. With 21 home runs, Semien leads all American League shortstops and trails only Trevor Story's 27 on the full leaderboard. Even though Semien has struggled overall this month, with a .192/.267/.410 batting line, his power has stuck around. He now has five home runs and a slick .208 ISO in July.
Jul 22 2016Semien is not in Friday's lineup against the Rays.Semien will get the day off for the first time this season after making 96 straight starts to begin 2016. In his place, the club will turn to Arismendy Alcantara at shortstop for Friday's contest versus Jake Odorizzi.
Jul 17 2016Semien went 1-for-4 with a solo homer Sunday against the Blue Jays.Semien cranked out his 20th homer of the year to get the Athletics on the board in the sixth inning of a home loss. He's now blasted four bombs in 13 July games, and he's slugging .475 on the season.
Jul 8 2016Semien went 1-for-3 with a solo homer and a walk Friday at the Astros.Semien launched his 15th bomb of the year to give the Athletics a 3-0 lead in a game they'd go on to lose. He's now left the yard four times in his last nine games to raise his slugging percentage to .482.
Jul 1 2016Semien went 1-for-5 with a solo homer in Thursday's 12-6 loss to the Giants. The slugging shorstop went deep for the third time in the last five games, and drove in his seventh run over that span. Semien has hit safely in seven of his last eight contests as well, and raised his season average 16 points in June.
Jun 27 2016Semien homered and drove in four runs in a 2-for-4 game in a win Monday over the Giants.Semien now has a five-game hitting streak and now has three homers and eight RBI over this stretch. He now has five homers this month and is slugging a robust .517 this month. His OPS is back up to .778 after hitting a low point at .714 on June 19.
Jun 12 2016Semien went 2-for-4 with a two-run shot, his 12th home run of the season, in Sunday's win over the Reds. He's had a fairly quite June so far, hitting .257 (9-for-35) with two homers, three RBI, three runs scored and two steals, but given his defensive improvements in 2016 the A's seem willing to give Semien plenty of leeway at the plate.
Jun 3 2016Semien went 1-for-3 with home run, a walk and a strikeout Friday against Houston.Semien has hit safely in five of the past six games, and he's also had two multi-hit games over that span. The 25-year-old shortstop has hit .273 with a .485 SLG over the past 10 games, and his fantasy value will continue to be pretty high as long as he can keep showing this sort of power from a middle infield position.
May 30 2016Semien went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI against Minnesota Monday.Semien ranks second in the team with 23 RBI. He's his safely in six of the last nine games, but his average over that span is a paltry .206. It's no secret he needs to produce a bit more at the plate, although at least he's doing better in May (.236) when compared to his struggles during April (.205).
May 29 2016Semien went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored in Saturday's 12-3 victory over the Tigers.Even the struggling shortstop got in on the A's' 17-hit act Saturday, notching his first multi-hit game since May 18, and sixth overall during the month Although he's still largely scuffling at the plate, Semien has managed to nudge his average up 17 points to .222, and now has 12 RBI on the month as well.
May 16 2016Semien hit a solo home run in a 1-for-3 game in Monday's win over the Rangers.Semien's one-dimensional season continues. He now has 10 home runs, ranking him third among major league shortstops, one behind both Manny Machado and Trevor Story. However, he is still hitting just .220/.307/.472 as a 22.9 percent strikeout rate and .207 BABIP are dragging him down. Semien will probably find more hits in play soon, but it's doubtful he'll keep slugging like this, as his career high in home runs is 15 in 155 games last year.
May 7 2016Semien went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, three RBI, a walk and two runs scored in Saturday's 8-4 victory over the Orioles in the first game of a double-header.The 25-year-old now has back-to-back multi-hit outings, after not having accomplished the feat since April 12. Furthermore, those two contests have also included back-to-back homers, as well as four RBI. After a late April slump that saw his average dip to .186 at one point, Semien is now hitting .221 with a team-leading eight homers. His current long ball tally has him well on pace to surpass the 15 homers he managed over 556 at-bats in 2015. However, with only one other extra-base hit besides the gopher balls, the four-year pro is has been a bit on the feast-or-famine side to date this season.
May 7 2016Semien went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, three RBI, a walk and two runs scored in Saturday's 8-4 victory over the Orioles in the first game of a doubleheader. The 25-year-old now has back-to-back multi-hit outings, after not having accomplished the feat since April 12.
May 4 2016Semien continued his struggles on Tuesday against the Mariners, going 0-for-3 to drop his average to .195.Semien does have six homers already in 2016 which has helped fantasy owners a lot, but he is really struggling to hit for average. Semien has not had a multiple hit game since April 12th which is affecting his ability to steal bases as he only has one swipe on the year as a result. Semien's average is keeping him from moving up from the nine slot in the A's batting order, impairing his fantasy value.
Apr 26 2016Semien hit his fifth homer of the season -- a two-run shot -- during Tuesday's 5-1 win over the Tigers. The shortstop now leads the team in long balls, but is hitting just .197 for the season. The power is nice and he's currently on pace to surpass last year's career-high 15 home runs. However, until he gets more consistent with the bat, Semien isn't the most attractive fantasy option.
Apr 12 2016Semien went 2-for-3 with a pair of solo home runs Tuesday against the Angels.Semien continues to bat ninth in the Athletics order, even though he now owns a team-leading .593 slugging percentage after this impressive outburst. The shortstop will move up if he can sustain this pace, but that's a big if.
Mar 16 2016Semien had his first multi-hit game of the spring Monday, going 2-for-4 against the Giants.Semien enters 2016 in a better place than spring 2015, now clearly slotted in as the A's starting shortstop. Offensively, Semien provided nice fantasy value in 2015, compiling 15 homers to go with 11 stolen bases. Semien's big issue was the large number of errors he had at shortstop, but he seemed to gain comfort and confidence with the leather in the second half under the tutelage of Ron Washington. With the A's lineup stronger and deeper in 2016, it is still up in the air where Semien may slot in the lineup which could affect his runs and RBI, but he should be a nice source of speed and power for fantasy owners later in drafts at a thin position.
Oct 3 2015Semien went 2-for-6 with a game-winning two-run home run in a 7-5 win over the Mariners on Saturday. It wasn't all good for Semien on Saturday, as he was caught stealing and committed his 35th error of the season. It's these silly mental errors that is keeping Semien from being a more reliable player and he'll need to clean that up if he wants the A's to trust him going forward. Semien does show some power that most shortstops don't though, as he's hit 15 homers in 154 games played.
Oct 2 2015Semien is not in the lineup Friday against the Mariners, Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports. It appears to just be a regular day off for Semien after starting each of the previous four games. Eric Sogard will get the start at shortstop in his place and bat eighth.
Sep 26 2015Semien is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Giants.Semien is prone to an occasional day off, but it's only been three games since his last misses start. Like usual, Eric Sogard will fill in at shortstop, hitting eighth.
Sep 19 2015Semien went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk and two runs scored in a 10-6 loss to the Astros.Semien has a pretty nice bat, but it's hard to overlook 34 errors. Despite the errors, Semien is one of the best power-hitting shortstops in baseball, as he has 13 homers in 144 games. A surprising stat for Semien is that he has 11 steals and those two stats alone make him relevant in nearly every format.
Sep 11 2015Semien is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Rangers.Semien is hitting .310 since Aug. 28, but manager Bob Melvin decided it was time for a night off. Eric Sogard will get the start at shortstop in Semien's place.
Sep 6 2015Semien is not in the lineup Sunday against the Mariners.Semien has made 10 straight starts at shortstop, but will sit Sunday afternoon in favor of Eric Sogard. He'll likely be back in action when Oakland opens a three-game series against the Astros on Monday.
Aug 28 2015Semien went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored in a 6-4 loss to Arizona on Friday.Semien has had a nightmare season in the field recording 30-plus errors, but he has been solid with the bat. August has been particularly friendly to Semien as he is batting .290 with three homers, 10 runs scored and 10 RBI in 69 at-bats. It's never been a question of hitting for Semien and if he puts it all together, he could be an elite shortstop option going forward.
Aug 25 2015Semien was 1-for-3 with his 11th homer on Tuesday night. After a very rough June and July that saw Semien hit .199 with two homers, he has turned it around in August hitting .302 with an .829 OPS. Semien's defense, a huge issue in the first half, has come around a little bit with only two errors in August after 29 of them coming into the month. With the A's out of the playoff race, they will likely use the last six weeks of the season to give Semien full-time reps in order to further evaluate his prospects at the position for 2016.
Aug 23 2015Semien is out of Sunday's lineup against the Rays, John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group reports.Semien's absence Sunday marks just his second in the month of August. The 24-year-old shortstop has picked things up again offensively this month, batting .302/.353/.476 with two home runs and eight RBI. Eric Sogard will will replace him at shortstop, batting eighth for the Athletics.
Aug 12 2015Semien is not in the lineup Wednesday against Toronto.Semien will get the day off, as Eric Sogard takes over the shortstop duties. Sogard will bat eighth against Jays starter R.A. Dickey.
Aug 5 2015Semien went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, a steal, a run scored and two RBI on Tuesday against Baltimore.Semien's double put Oakland ahead 3-1, but he was picked off of third base to end the inning. With the game later going to extra innings, his mistake was potentially a costly one. After a July in which he had an awful .471 OPS, he's now had hits in four of his first five games to get August off to a solid start.
Jul 25 2015Semien is back in the lineup Saturday and will bat leadoff for the second time this season.Semien will serve as Oakland's leadoff man Saturday as Billy Burns (groin) is getting an off-day. His offensive production has dropped off over the summer, batting just .216 in June and July as Oakland's usual number nine hitter. Semien will be going up against Madison Bumgarner for the first time in his career Saturday.
Jun 28 2015Semien is out of the lineup Sunday against the Royals.Semien's bat seems to have gone cold again, as he's failed to register a hit in his last three starts. His much-maligned defense certainly won't keep him on the field when he's a void offensively, so manager Bob Melvin will give the young infielder a rest Sunday and hand shortstop duties over to Eric Sogard.
Jun 17 2015Semien is back in the lineup Wednesday against San Diego. After getting the day off Tuesday, Semien will bat second in the A's order Wednesday and play shortstop. He'll be facing Padres' right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne.
Jun 16 2015Semien is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Padres. The A's have a day game following a night game during a busy part of the schedule, so Semien, Brett Lawrie and Stephen Vogt will all be held out of the lineup. All three will likely slot back in for Wednesday's game against the Padres.
Jun 4 2015Semien is out of the lineup Thursday, the Bay Area News Group's John Hickey reports.Over the past couple weeks Semien's average has dropped from .290 to .277, but his production this season still compares favorably to most shortstops. Defense is Semien's biggest issue, so he will need to keep hitting in order to justify his spot in the lineup. Eric Sogard will get the start at shortstop Thursday.
May 26 2015Semien was 0-for-4 on Tuesday night to drop his average to .283.After a great start to the 2015 campaign, Semien has hit a bit of a rough patch, with only four hits in his last 31 at-bats. Semien has had a lot of trouble on defense as he leads the Majors in errors, but up until now he has hit easily enough to stay in the lineup. However, if his current slump were to linger too long, he could begin to lose some playing time due to those struggles on defense.
May 22 2015Semien is out of the lineup Friday against Tampa Bay.Semien had started every game this season other than the A's game on May 7 against the Twins. He'll be replaced at shortstop by Andy Parrino, who will bat eighth.
May 17 2015Semien had two more hits Sunday to raise his average to .314, but he also committed two more errors to raise his MLB-leading total to 13.Semien has been great at the plate to start 2015, but the fielding issues are starting to become a black eye. He is the everyday shortstop for the A's at the moment, but he will need to get his defense in line if he is going to stick there all season.
May 13 2015Semien was 3-for-5 on Tuesday, including his sixth homer.Semien has had a great start to 2015 with six homers and six stolen bases through his first 35 games to go with his .307 average. After starting the year at the bottom of the order, Semien has been hitting second some games which can only help his counting stats. With eligibility at three infield positions, Semien has proved to be extremely valuable for fantasy owners so far.
May 10 2015Semien had a big day at the plate on Sunday, going 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs against Felix Hernandez of the Mariners. The 24-year-old did something that few players can boast in taking King Felix deep twice in one game, and now owns a pleasant .307 average and a .841 OPS on the season. Semien also has five home runs, six steals and 14 RBI on the year and has become a valuable fantasy asset due to his multi-category production and position flexibility.
May 9 2015Semien had a great game Saturday as he went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases in the 7-2 loss to the Mariners.Semien has had a great season as he has a .293 average and contributes a little bit in every category. With his multi-position eligibility, Semien has become a must-own in nearly every format.
May 7 2015Semien is out of the lineup Thursday, the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser reports. He has been in the lineup for the A's almost everyday, and has produced with flying colors at the plate, so a day off was deserved. Eric Sogard gets the rare start at shortstop and Semien should be back in the lineup for the start of Oakland's weekend series.
Apr 30 2015Semien had three hits and two runs on Wednesday night to up his average on the year to .298.Semien has been especially hot of late with 12 hits in his last seven games over 29 at-bats. Most importantly, after hitting near the bottom of the order for most of the season, Semien has hit first or second for the last five games.
Apr 24 2015Semien hit leadoff on Friday night and responded with his third home run on the year to go with two hits and two RBI.Semien has had a solid start to the year, hitting .279 with a .799 OPS over his first 68 at-bats. With Craig Gentry struggling, Semien could see more time at leadoff when the A's face a lefty, but will likely remain near the bottom of the order for now against righties. Semien has earned shortstop eligibility already this season and now has eligibility at three infield positions, adding to his fantasy value.
Apr 8 2015Semien went 0-for-3 in Tuesday's loss to the Rangers.Semien will serve as the primary shortstop this season and figures to slot in toward the bottom of the lineup. In two games, the 24-year-old is 1-for-7 with an RBI and two strikeouts.
Mar 3 2015Semien homered twice in Tuesday's spring game against the Giants.Semien is the favorite to win the every day shortstop role for the A's and today's debut will do nothing to hurt his cause. Even more impressive, one of the bombs came at the expense of Madison Bumgarner. Semien struggled last year in his time with the White Sox, but did have a nice September after being recalled, posting an .818 OPS over 66 at-bats. Semien's flexibility will have value in fantasy leagues as he is eligible at second and third base and should gain shortstop eligibility quickly once the season starts.
Feb 24 2015A's manager Bob Melvin said Tuesday that Semien will have every chance to win the starting shortstop job, John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group reports.Melvin confirmed the general belief that Semien is the favorite to start at shortstop on Opening Day. Of course, the A's have never shied away from using a slew of players to cover one position, and the team also has Eric Sogard and Andy Parrino competing for playing time at shortstop.
Feb 16 2015Semien is expected to be given every shot to win the A's starting shortstop position this spring, reports Jane Lee of MLB.com.Semien only hit .234/.300/.673 in his 2014 stint with the White Sox, but got on base at a nice clip in the minors when he was sent down (.380 OBP in 303 at-bats). Semien hit much better when he was recalled to the White Sox in 2014, posting an OPS of .818 with three homers in 66 September at-bats. Semien will be eligible at second base, shortstop and third base a few weeks into the season which adds nicely to his value.
Dec 9 2014The White Sox have agreed to trade Semien along with Chris Bassitt and a player to be named later to the A's in exchange for Jeff Samardzija, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.Semien, 24, has yet to flash much at the major league level, with a .240/.293/.380 batting line in 85 games, but he's displayed a discerning eye and strong on-base skills in the minors (.374 OBP), as well as 20-20 potential. The assumption is that Semien will step in as the starting shortstop right away, joining fellow trade acquisition Brett Lawrie to form a new-look left side of the infield in Oakland.
Sep 12 2014Semien hit his first homer since April 23 in Thursday's 1-0 win over the A's.It was his lone hit on the day and just his fifth hit in six games since being recalled from Triple-A. Semien's bele playing semi-regularly lately, having started three of Chicago's last four games. He made all three of those starts at different positions -- second, third and short.
Sep 10 2014Semien committed three errors as the White Sox's starting third baseman Tuesday. This was already his third start at third base since being recalled Sept. 3, and he already has four errors at the position in that stretch. He has 12 errors total in 401.1 MLB innings across third, second base, and short, but his hitting in the minors (.881 OPS) will keep his name in the mix for an infield spot in 2015.
Sep 3 2014Semien was among the White Sox's roster additions Tuesday, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.Semien saw a good amount of time in the White Sox's infield for the first several weeks of the season, but the club opted to recall Carlos Sanchez first when Gordon Beckham was traded last week. He should be in line for utility work over the season's final weeks.
Jun 23 2014Assistant general manager Buddy Bell said Semien is comfortable enough in the outfield to play left in the big leagues, but he is not quite ready for everyday action, the White Sox's official site reports.Semien played all over the infield during his cup of coffee with the White Sox earlier this season, but the team wanted him to add a bit more defensive flexibility in anticipation of him serving in an uber utility role later this season. He is only hitting .221 in 20 games since his demotion to Charlotte, but he also has a mature 11:10 K:BB.
Jun 2 2014Semien may get some work in the outfield with Triple-A Charlotte, the Chicago Sun-Times' Daryl Van Schouwen reports.Already capable at all the infield positions besides first base, Semien could boost his chances of rejoining the big-league squad, if he's able to add the outfield to his repertoire. He was sent down to Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday, after posting an ugly .218/.287/.327 slash line over 181 plate appearances with the White Sox.
Jun 1 2014Semien was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte following Sunday's game, MLB.com reports.Semien was an admirable fill-in when Connor Gillaspie and Gordon Beckham started the season on the DL, but with a healthy infield, there wasn't much playing time for him. HIs averaged dropped down to .218, but he'll now get the chance to work on his craft in the minors, where he'll get the opportunity to play every day. No corresponding move has yet been announced, but the White Sox will need to make a move for Monday's presumed activation of slugger Jose Abreu, and this very well could have been it.
May 25 2014Semien went 2-for-4 with a strikeout as the White Sox's starting third baseman Saturday.Semien got the start in place of an ailing Conor Gillaspie (Achilles') on Saturday, but he has hardly been seen in the lineup since Gillaspie returned from the DL on May 8. Semien has all of 16 at-bats since that date, and he may be bound for Triple-A Charlotte when the Sox need to avail a roster spot for Jose Abreu (foot) on June 2.
May 9 2014Semien is not in the lineup Friday against Arizona. The absence will make the third time in five games that Semien is on the bench, opening up questions about a potential return to Triple-A since the White Sox now have Gordon Beckham and Conor Gillaspie healthy and able to play Semien's primary positions.
May 8 2014Semien is not in the lineup Thursday against the Cubs.Semien will sit for the second time in four games, as Conor Gillaspie takes over at third base and bats second against right-hander Jake Arrieta. A fixture in the lineup in April, Semien has gotten off to a 3-for-18 start to May and could be in danger of losing out on regular playing time.
May 8 2014Manager Robin Ventura said Semien should continue to see playing time opportunities even after Conor Gillaspie returned from the disabled list Wednesday, ESPN Chicago reports.Semien was thought to be on the roster bubble when Gillaspie returned from the DL, especially with Gordon Beckham healthy and holding down second. Semien has had some big hits in his 30+ games for the Sox, but he also leads the American League with 45 strikeouts and is slugging a measly .281 at the generally inflating U.S. Cellular Field. He could see time around the infield now that other folks are healthy, and he might eventually wind up at Triple-A Charlotte if he can't find consistent playing time.
May 4 2014Semien is not in the lineup Sunday against the Indians.Though Semien continues to enjoy regular starting duty with Conor Gillaspie on the disabled list, his production has yet to take off as a result. His 0-for-7 start to the series with the Indians has dropped his line to .213/.270/.346 for the season and will result in Leury Garcia logging the start at third base.
Apr 27 2014Semien should continue to see regular playing time at third base after Conor Gillaspie was placed on the disabled list Saturday.Semien is batting below .220 and has 33 strikeouts in 114 plate appearances, but he has come up with enough big hits (all three of his home runs have come in the eighth inning or later with the team losing) to warrant a spot in the everyday starting lineup. Still, this security should only last until Gillaspie or Jeff Keppinger return from the disabled list (both TBD).
Apr 24 2014Semien will remain on the White Sox's roster even with Gordon Beckham on his way back from the disabled list, the Chicago Tribune reports.Beckham's injury in spring training helped allow Semien to break camp with the big league club, and it looks like he will get to stick around a bit longer. Semien may only have a .234 average and a 28 percent K-rate, but he's had a few big hits over his first 21 games, including a game-winning grand slam against the Tigers on Wednesday. The White Sox will need a roster spot to add a fifth starter this weekend, and he or Leury Garcia would be the obvious casualties (barring someone else landing on the DL). Beckham's presence should prohibit Semien from playing everyday, but he should still see a handful of starts around the infield.
Apr 23 2014Semien went 1-for-4 with a grand slam in Wednesday's win over Detroit. The grand slam was the first of his career, and his third home run of the year. Despite the slam, however, he struck out twice, and his average sits at just .234, which won't cut it at the top of the lineup for long.
Apr 20 2014Semien enjoyed a very productive day at the plate Sunday afternoon going 4-for-6 with two runs scored and four driven in as the White Sox thumped Texas 16-2.He's hitting a rather lackluster .222 but he has nine runs batted in and is getting consistent playing time at the top of the Chicago order so his chances to score runs are also potentially plentiful. Playing second base regularly now, he'll need to keep producing once Gordon Beckham returns if he wants to maintain a fulltime job.
Apr 13 2014Semien is back in the lineup Sunday against the Indians, Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports.Semien will return to his regular spot, batting second in the order and getting the start at second base. He took a seat in favor of Leury Garcia on Saturday, but it looks like this was just a regular day of rest, as Semien had started the previous 11 games at the keystone. He's hitting .234 with one home run and two steals to start the season.
Apr 12 2014Semien is not in the starting lineup Saturday against the Indians, Doug Padilla of ESPNChicago.com reports. While Semien's batting just .234, he's hit safely in eight of his last nine games and has scored eight runs in 11 games total. Leury Garcia will take over at second base and in the two-hole Saturday against Justin Masterson, but expect Semien to be available off the bench and back in the lineup Sunday.
Apr 12 2014Semien reached base three times and scored three runs in Friday's 9-6 win over the Indians.Semien did everything the White Sox could have asked of him while batting out of the No. 2 spot in the order Friday. The young second baseman has offered a little bit of everything for fantasy owners in the early stages of the season, providing a home run, four RBI, two stolen bases and eight runs scored through 11 games. He's also recorded a hit in eight of his last nine games.
Apr 3 2014Semien had his first hit of the season in Thursday's loss to Minnesota, smacking a solo homer in the eighth inning.Semien has been hitting second in the order, but has failed to produce, other than his home run Thursday. He's guaranteed a lot of playing time while Gordon Beckham is on the DL, but the situation will be unclear once Beckham returns.
Apr 2 2014Semien, who has hit second in each of the White Sox's first two games, has gone 0-for-10 with three strikeouts.Conor Gillapsie was sidelined by an illness Wednesday, which prompted Semien to move from second base to third base. Most days, he'll handle the keystone until Gordon Beckham returns from the DL, but Semien needs to hit in order to seize a role after Beckman is back in the mix on a regular basis.
Mar 26 2014Semien will be the Opening Day starter at second base for the White Sox, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.Semien has been filling in while Beckham (oblique) has been unable to play this spring. He brings some excitement as a young infielder in the organization and is hitting .348/.455/.522 with a home run and four RBI this spring. He should be a big part of the plans in the short term and long term for the White Sox.
Mar 25 2014Semien went 2-for-3 including his first home run of the preseason on Monday versus the Mariners.Semien has been very solid at the plate this spring, posting a .341/.442/.500 slash line over 52 plate appearances. Given his offensive form this month and ability to man various positions, the 23-year-old infielder has certainly put himself in a position to possibly crack the White Sox Opening Day roster.
Mar 15 2014White Sox manager Robin Ventura said Saturday that Semien and Leury Garcia will get most of the playing time at second base in place of Gordon Beckham (oblique) this spring, the Chicago Sun-Times' Daryl Van Schouwen reports.Beckham has been ruled out of baseball activities for a minimum of seven days, placing his Opening Day availability into question. With Jeff Keppinger still struggling to recover from September shoulder surgery, Semien and Garcia are the top two candidates to replace Beckham at second base. Semien primarily played third base last season and was expected to focus on shortstop this spring, but team need will apparently result in some time at second base. He's still uncertain to make the Opening Day roster, though the Beckham injury unquestionably helps his chances.
Feb 23 2014Semien has been working out at shortstop so far in camp, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.Semien primarily played third base during his September audition with the White Sox last season, but he has mostly played short during his three-year minor league career. He can also play some second, and that versatility around the infield could help him land a utility job out of camp. However, the more likely outcome this spring is he gets sent down to Triple-A Charlotte to start the year until injury or trade creates a pathway for everyday playing time
Sep 28 2013Semien went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in the White Sox's win over the Royals on Saturday. He played both short and third base in this one while hitting his second home run of the week. Semien has played three defensive positions for the Sox since joining the club at the beginning of the month, and that flexibility should help him earn a job next spring (if he does not win a starting job outright).
Sep 23 2013Semien went 2-for-4 Monday night, including his first Major League home run.Semien took a JA Happ second inning offering over the fence for his first big league bomb. The rookie infielder has impressed in his short time in the Majore Leagues, hitting .306 in his 49 at-bats.
Sep 23 2013Manager Robin Ventura said he could "trust" Semien at short, the Chicago Tribune reports.Semien made his first career start at shortstop Saturday after spending much of his brief MLB stay at third base. He receive another start or two at the position over the season's final week, but Ventura's comment could have larger implications if Alexei Ramirez departs via trade this winter.
Sep 16 2013Semien is out of the White Sox's lineup Monday versus the Twins.Semien currently has a four-game hitting streak going, during which he's batting .467 (7-for-15) with two runs scored and one stolen base in two attempts. He'll hand over the keys to third base to Conor Gillaspie, who will bat third in the order.
Sep 13 2013Semien went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored in the White Sox's loss to the Indians on Thursday. This marked his second consecutive start at third base, and the starts could continue to come at a rapid pace in the wake of Conor Gillaspie's three-error game Tuesday. He also drew his first major league walk Thursday after accumulating 98 between Double- and Triple-A earlier this season.
Sep 8 2013Semien went 0-for-3 as the White Sox's starting third baseman before he was pulled for a pinch hitter in the 10th inning. This was his second start in four days, both of which have come at third base. Semien should receive a fairly steady stream of starts at the position as the White Sox evaluate the spot for 2014. As a result, Conor Gillaspie's at-bats may be reduced.
Sep 4 2013Semien is expected to receive semi-regular at-bats with the White Sox in September, CSN Chicago reports. The White Sox are playing out the string on a lost season, so the team will attempt to take a look at some of its youngsters in what could amount to a de facto audition for the 2014 Opening Day roster. Semien should see most of his time at third base, where he'll make his major league debut Wednesday against the Yankees as a part of the starting lineup.
Sep 2 2013Semien had his contract selected from Triple-A Charlotte on Monday, CSN Chicago reports.Since his promotion to Durham on August 1, Semien has slashed a decent .262/.333/.459 with four home runs, 17 RBI, 19 runs, and four stolen bases in 122 at-bats. Despite the ample production, he'll likely find it difficult to garner many at-bats behind fellow shortstop Alexei Ramirez, though Semien did display an ability to cover both second and third base in the minors.
Mar 11 2013Semien was reassigned to minor league camp Monday.Semien, 22, went 5-for-11 with a homer and four RBI while with the big club for spring training. His invite was more about gaining experience, but Semien looks primed to make the jump to Double-A this season.
