Dec 1 2021Garcia signed a two-year, $7 million contract with the Padres on Wednesday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia served as a late reliever for the Cardinals in 2021 and converted two of three save chances while recording 11 holds. Across 34 relief appearances, he posted a 3.24 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in 33.1 innings. The Padres lost closer Mark Melancon to the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, so Garcia will likely compete for save chances with Emilio Pagan ahead of the 2022 campaign.
Nov 3 2021Garcia (0-2) allowed three runs on two hits and a walk while striking out three in 2.2 innings to take the loss in Game 6 of the World Series against Atlanta on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia was charged with losses in each of his two World Series starts this year, and the Astros failed to provide him with any run support as Atlanta clinched a championship in Game 6. Across his five postseason starts, the righty generated an 8.04 ERA and 1.60 WHIP in 15.2 innings.
Oct 29 2021Garcia picked up the loss in Game 3 of the World Series in Atlanta on Friday, lasting just 3.2 innings while giving up one run on three hits and four walks while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia's strikeout total was strong, and his one run allowed wasn't bad, but he'd allowed far too many batters to be trusted to remain in the game any longer. He hasn't been particularly good this postseason, as his short start Friday actually represents the second-longest of his four playoff outings this year.
Oct 26 2021Garcia will start Game 3 of the World Series in Atlanta on Friday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia will be pushed behind Jose Urquidy in the rotation. However, that shouldn't be taken as an indictment on Garcia, who looked great in his last start after struggling mightily in his first two postseason outings. The Astros can afford to pull their Game 2 starter early knowing they can rest their bullpen the next day, while the Game 3 starter will likely be asked to pitch deeper into the game.
Oct 23 2021Garcia (1-1) allowed a hit and a walk while striking out seven in 5.2 scoreless innings to earn the win against the Red Sox in Game 6 of the ALCS on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia dealt with right knee discomfort in last weekend's start, but he didn't appear to be hindered by the issue Friday. He tossed 76 pitches and held the Red Sox hitless through 5.2 innings before he gave up a triple to Enrique Hernandez in the top of the sixth. The 24-year-old has a 9.64 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in 9.1 innings across three postseason starts this year, and he'll attempt to carry Friday's momentum into the World Series.
Oct 21 2021Garcia will start Game 6 of the ALCS against the Red Sox on Friday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia started Game 2 of the ALCS on Saturday, but he was forced out of the contest in the top of the second inning due to right knee discomfort. However, he threw a bullpen Sunday and felt better following his early exit. As a result, the right-hander will start at Minute Maid Park as the Astros attempt to punch their ticket to the World Series.
Oct 18 2021Garcia recorded a 3.24 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 34 strikeouts across 33.1 innings of relief work this season. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia added 1.2 scoreless innings in the NL Wild Card Game loss against the Dodgers, and he established himself as one of the top bullpen options for the Cardinals during the season. The 34-year-old has bounced around a bit during his MLB career but figures to get another shot in St. Louis next year, and he could end up on the fantasy radar if he starts seeing save chances.
Oct 17 2021Astros manager Dusty Baker said Garcia (knee) threw a bullpen session and is "feeling a lot better," Mark Berman of Fox 26 Houston reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia, who started Saturday's 9-5 loss to the Red Sox in Game 2 of the ALCS, labored through one inning (33 pitches) and was charged with five earned runs before departing with right knee discomfort. His ability to get back on the mound a day later suggests that Garcia avoided a major issue, and while Baker said the team isn't considering removing the right-hander from the ALCS roster, it's unclear what role he'll have moving forward. Because Jake Odorizzi was needed in long relief Saturday due to Garcia's early exit, the Astros will need to break in a new starter for Tuesday's Game 4 in Boston. Baker mentioned Zack Greinke as a potential candidate to step in and fill the opening.
Oct 16 2021Garcia exited Saturday's game against Boston with right knee discomfort, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia gave up a grand slam in the first inning and had another run charged to his line after he walked the leadoff man in the second inning before exiting. The good news for the Astros is that he isn't dealing with an arm problem. If the knee issue passes quickly, the fact that he exited early could in theory leave him able to return within the next few days, but it's possible the injury is serious enough that he'll have to be removed from the roster.
Oct 14 2021Garcia will start Game 2 of the ALCS against the Red Sox on Saturday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia will start on normal rest after he gave up five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three in 2.2 innings in Game 3 of the ALDS during his postseason debut. He'll attempt to right the ship at Minute Maid Park on Saturday.
Oct 11 2021Garcia took a no-decision Sunday in the Astros' 12-6 loss to the White Sox in Game 3 of the ALDS after giving up five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three over 2.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia looked to be in strong position for a win after he entered the bottom of the third with a 5-1 lead, but the game quickly unraveled for the Astros. After issuing a leadoff walk and then striking out Jose Abreu, Garcia served up a two-run home run to Yasmani Grandal to cut the Astros' lead to two. Garcia then induced a groundout, but surrendered back-to-back singles before manager Dusty Baker turned the game over to reliever Yimi Garcia, who promptly allowed a three-run home run to Leury Garcia. While Luis Garcia's postseason debut was far from memorable, he should still be in good standing to maintain his spot in the rotation when his next turn comes up in the ALCS, should Houston advance.
Oct 8 2021Garcia will start Game 3 of the ALDS in Chicago, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As expected, Garcia is the Astros' third starter this postseason after posting a 3.30 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 167:50 K:BB in 155.1 innings this season. He figures to pitch on somewhat of a short leash, considering his youth and the bullpen availability of Zack Greinke, although he did dominate the White Sox for seven innings with eight strikeouts on June 18.
Sep 30 2021Garcia (11-8) suffered the loss against Tampa Bay on Wednesday, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out six across five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia wasn't helped by his defense, as a two-out error during the second inning led to three unearned runs. However, the right-hander wasn't blame-free in contributing to his own demise, as he gave up a pair of long balls and four total extra-base hits. Garcia did manage to extend his streak of lasting five innings or more to 10 starts, and he has yielded a strong 2.96 ERA and 1.24 WHIP over that stretch. He finishes the campaign with a 3.30 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 173:52 K:BB across 160.1 innings.
Sep 30 2021Garcia earned a two-out save with a pair of strikeouts Thursday against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With the Cardinals holding onto a one-run lead in the ninth, Garcia came into the game to replace T.J. McFarland after he issued a one-walk out. The right-hander sent Lorenzo Cain and Kolten Wong down on strikes to finish things off. While Giovanny Gallegos remains the closer in St. Louis, Garcia has provided sufficient bullpen support, pitching to the tune of a 2.78 ERA and 0.96 WHIP with a pair of saves across 33 appearances.
Sep 22 2021Garcia settled for a no-decision against the Angels on Wednesday despite pitching six innings of shutout ball. He allowed three hits and three walks while striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia wasn't flawless in the outing, as he threw only 42 of 79 pitches for strikes and induced just six swings-and-misses. However, the right-hander kept Los Angeles off the scoreboard for six innings and departed with a 3-0 lead. Houston's bullpen quickly let that lead evaporate, however, as the Angels put up five runs in the seventh frame. Though Houston ultimately pulled out the win, Garcia was left with a no-decision despite the strong performance. He did, however, notch his first quality start in nearly a month, and Garcia will look to build upon this performance in his scheduled start at home against the Rays next week.
Sep 21 2021Garcia struck out a batter during a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his first save of the season in Monday's 5-2 win over the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia was blown up for two runs on a pair of hits while managing to get just one out against the Padres on Sunday but bounced back nicely with a quick 1-2-3 ninth inning to record his first save of 2021. The 30-year-old had a 25.1 scoreless innings streak before Sunday's outing and appears to have possibly earned himself some more trust in high-leverage scenarios. For the year, Garcia has a 2.60 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 27:5 K:BB over 27.2 innings.
Sep 16 2021Garcia (11-7) got the win in Thursday's 12-1 defeat of the Rangers, allowing one run on five hits and three walks with two strikeouts in 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia was able to navigate some traffic on the bases in the second and third innings and bide some time until Houston broke out with seven runs in the fourth. It was a nice rebound performance from the young righty after surrendering four runs in a loss last turn, though his two whiffs are a season low for any appearance lasting at least four innings. He's totaled just 10 strikeouts in his last three starts after averaging six per game prior to the recent stretch.
Sep 13 2021Garcia recorded his eighth hold in a win over the Reds on Sunday, allowing a hit and recording two strikeouts over one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia continues to serve as a highly reliable relief option for manager Mike Shildt, now having forged 21 consecutive scoreless appearances. The veteran right-hander has seven of his eight holds on the season over that span as well, and he's now coaxed his previously bloated ERA and WHIP down to 2.16 and 0.88, respectively.
Sep 11 2021Garcia (10-7) allowed four runs on seven hits and a pair of walks over five innings and took the loss against the Angels on Saturday. He had three strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia was touched up for two runs in both the first and third innings, the decisive blow coming on a two-run homer by light-hitting Luis Rengifo. It was the first loss since Aug. 1 for Garcia, who had gone 3-0 with a 2.70 ERA over his previous six starts prior to Saturday's setback. He's tentatively scheduled to return to the mound next week with a home start against Arizona.
Sep 6 2021Garcia gained velocity on all five of his pitches during Sunday's outing against the Padres, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia's four-seam fastball averaged 94.5 mph Sunday, slightly more than the 93.3 mph average for the season. The cutter, which averaged 86 mph all year, was up to 88.5 on Sunday. He's thrown a career-high 134 innings this season, 25.1 innings more than his previous high in 2019. The 24-year-old right-hander, who never pitched above A-ball prior to 2020, keeps chugging along. In addition to maintaining or increasing velocity, the rookie showed composure Sunday, not letting the Padres' three-run first inning get to him. He yielded just three baserunners following that first frame. The Astros will continue to limit his pitches per outing, capping him at about 80, which routinely limits Garcia to fewer than six innings in his starts.
Sep 5 2021Garcia allowed three earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out five across 4.2 innings in the loss to the Padres on Sunday. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia surrendered all three runs in the first inning on three hits and a walk. He did not allow any further damage, but he was pulled with two outs in the fifth inning. The 24-year-old has a 2.80 ERA with 34 punchouts in 32.1 innings over his last five starts. On the season, he has a 3.29 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with a 10.4 K/9 over 134 innings.
Aug 30 2021Garcia didn't factor into the decision during Monday's 4-3 win over the Mariners, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks with six strikeouts in five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia faced trouble in a few innings Monday but surrendered his two runs on a Jose Marmolejos solo shot in the second inning and a Luis Torrens sixth-inning double. The rookie right-hander concludes August still on a three game winning streak and posted a 3.34 ERA in six starts this month.
Aug 26 2021Garcia, who secured his third hold in an extra-inning win over the Tigers on Wednesday, has now pitched 16.1 consecutive scoreless innings during which he boasts a win, two holds and a 16:1 K:BB. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's quite the turnaround for the 34-year-old, who began his Cardinals tenure by yielding six earned runs over his first three appearances. Garcia's scoreless streak stretches back to July 28 and features five appearances of more than one inning in duration.
Aug 25 2021Garcia (10-6) tossed 6.2 scoreless innings en route to grabbing the win Tuesday in the Astros' 4-0 victory over the Royals. He struck out seven and gave up four hits and walked one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Houston offense staked Garcia to a 3-0 lead after the first inning, and the run support was more than enough for the 24-year-old, who continues to build a strong case for American League Rookie of the Year honors. He's bounced back well from back-to-back starts in which he allowed a combined 10 earned runs, posting a 1.99 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 23:5 K:BB in 22.2 innings over his most recent four outings.
Aug 20 2021Garcia didn't factor into the decision Thursday against the Royals after allowing three runs on four hits and a walk across five innings, fanning three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia had won each of his previous two outings, but he was forced to settle with a no-decision in what was a very flat performance. The right-hander has given up three or fewer runs in each of his last three appearances and seems to have bounced back following a couple of rough starts between July 26 and Aug. 1. He owns a 2.81 ERA across his past three appearances.
Aug 14 2021Garcia (9-6) earned the win over the Angels on Saturday, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out five over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander's night started poorly when Shohei Ohtani led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run and Jared Walsh knocked in another run two batters later. However, Garcia rebounded to keep the Angels off the scoreboard over the remainder of his five frames, and Ohtani's homer ended up being the only extra-base hit he allowed in the contest. Since posting a pair of rough starts during which he allowed a combined 10 earned runs over 9.1 innings between July 26 and Aug. 1, Garcia has bounced back with consecutive wins in which he ha's held opponents to two earned runs over 11 frames. He's lined up to make his next start at Kansas City next week.
Aug 7 2021Garcia (8-6) fired six scoreless innings on two hits while striking out eight, earning the win against the Twins on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia fired six scoreless innings for just the second time in a start this season. It was a solid comeback outing after allowing five earned runs in each of his last two appearances. The 24-year-old carries a 3.29 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. In addition, he supports a solid 10.9 K/9 in 106.2 innings. However, he will have to wait a while for his next start as the Astros have two days off next week.
Aug 7 2021Garcia (1-0) fired two perfect innings while striking out three, earning the win over the Royals on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia entered the fifth inning and retired all six batters he faced. He has allowed just three hits in 8.1 scoreless innings over his last five appearances. His ERA is down to 5.79 after a rocky start to his season. In addition, he has a solid 10.6 K/9.
Aug 1 2021Garcia (7-6) allowed five runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out seven in 4.2 innings, taking the loss versus San Francisco on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For the second consecutive start and the third time in five outings, Garcia failed to complete five innings. He was taken deep twice Sunday, accounting for three of the five runs on his line. The right-hander has a still-solid 3.49 ERA with a 1.13 WHIP and 121:32 K:BB across 100.2 innings, but he's yielded 23 runs (21 earned) in his last 41.2 innings. He projects to make his next start versus Minnesota next weekend.
Jul 29 2021Garcia, who'd given up six earned runs on seven hits over his first three outings with the Cardinals, fired two perfect innings in Wednesday's loss to Cleveland, recording one strikeout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran reliever had gotten off to a highly inauspicious start with the Cardinals after signing July 9, but Wednesday's 26-pitch outing was a step in the right direction. Garcia's ability to work multiple innings and his rather shaky body of work seem to make him an ideal fit for low-leverage, middle-relief assignments for the time being.
Jul 27 2021Garcia allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out nine over 4.2 innings in a no-decision against the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Astros bequeathed six runs for Garcia before he threw his first pitch, and they had a 7-0 lead entering the bottom of the fourth inning when the wheels started to come off. Garcia needed only 38 pitches to get through the first three innings, but he had to expend another 49 to procure the next five outs before being pulled. He also had a throwing error that extended the fourth inning, when Seattle struck for three runs. On balance, the outing was an outlier for the rookie right-hander, who has a 3.19 ERA and 1.08 WHIP over 96 innings. If the rotation holds through Thursday's off day, Garcia lines up to pitch Sunday on the road against the Giants.
Jul 21 2021Garcia (7-5) allowed three hits and struck out eight over six scoreless innings to earn the win over Cleveland on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia was brilliant in earning his seventh win over the last 11 starts. Cleveland threatened in his final inning, putting the leadoff runner on, but Garcia wiped out the next three batters and ended his night after 79 pitches (58 strikes). He lines up to pitch next Monday on the road in Seattle.
Jul 9 2021Garcia signed a major-league contract with the Cardinals on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran righty has had some effective seasons in the past, and his career 4.26 ERA in 315 innings at the highest level is respectable enough, but it's unclear how much he has left in the tank at age 34. He threw just 8.1 innings for the Rangers last season, struggling to a 7.56 ERA, and he's yet to make his season debut this year. He's pitched well enough in 17.1 innings for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in the Yankees' system, posting a 3.63 ERA and 27.5 percent strikeout rate, so he could still be useful in lower-leverage situations for his new team.
Jul 7 2021Garcia allowed one earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out seven across five innings Wednesday against the Athletics. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia was taken yard by Matt Olson in the first inning, though he was nearly perfect after that. The only other hit he surrendered came in his final frame, a double off the bat of Chad Pinder. Aside from that damage, Garcia racked up 17 swinging strikes on 88 total pitches. The only thing missing from the effort was for Garcia to be rewarded with a win, though he exited the game with a 3-1 lead that was quickly blown by the bullpen. For the season, Garcia has a 3.06 ERA with 97 strikeouts across 85.1 frames.
Jul 1 2021Garcia (6-5) allowed four runs on three hits and three walks while striking out five over four innings as he was tagged with the loss Wednesday against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia struggled off the bat as he walked three guys and allowed two hits in the first frame, which amounted to all four runs he surrendered. The 24-year-old was able to settle in thereafter, allowing just a base hit over the following three innings. The four earned runs were the most he's let up all year, and Wednesday was the first time he's walked more than two batters since April 20. Garcia has still been impressive for a majority of the season with a 3.14 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 90:27 K:BB over 80.1 innings. He lines up for a meeting against the Athletics at the beginning of next week.
Jun 24 2021Garcia (6-4) earned the win Thursday after holding the Tigers to two runs on seven hits and a pair of walks while striking out five across seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Doubles proved to be the enemy this time, allowing each of Garcia's runs to score. The right-hander gave up an RBI double to Akil Baddoo in the third frame and an RBI double to Daz Cameron in the sixth in an otherwise strong performance. Garcia has now allowed two or fewer runs in six of his last seven starts, lowering his ERA to 2.83 and his WHIP to 1.10 across 76.1 innings. The 24-year-old is projected to take the mound again at home Wednesday against Baltimore.
Jun 18 2021Garcia allowed a run on seven hits and two walks over seven innings in Friday's win over the White Sox. He struck out eight and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The only run to score on Garcia came on a first-inning single by Jose Abreu. He held the White Sox off the board the rest of the evening but had to escape multiple threats throughout the contest. The 24-year-old righty has now allowed two or fewer runs in five of his last six starts, bringing his season ERA down to 2.82 through 70.1 innings. Garcia is projected to face the Tigers in Detroit next week.
Jun 12 2021Garcia (5-4) allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out four across 4.1 innings, taking the loss to the Twins on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia surrendered a two-run home run to Jorge Polanco as a part of a three-run fifth inning. His five-start winning streak came to an end Saturday after failing to make it through the fifth inning. The 24-year-old still has a strong 2.98 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP with 72 strikeouts in 63.1 innings. He will look to get back on track in his next start that will likely come next weekend against the White Sox.
Jun 10 2021Garcia (illness) is slated to start Saturday's game against the Twins, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Garcia's last start Sunday against the Blue Jays, manager Dusty Baker acknowledged that the right-hander was battling an illness during the outing, but there was never any real concern about his ability to make his next through the rotation. Even while pitching at less than 100 percent, Garcia continued to impress versus a talented lineup, limiting the Blue Jays to one run over six innings en route to capturing his fifth win in as many starts. He'll be seeking a fourth straight quality start when he returns to the mound Saturday.
Jun 6 2021Garcia improved to 5-3 in Sunday's 6-3 win over Toronto after giving up one earned run on three hits and two walks while striking out eight over six innings. Manager Dusty Baker said after the game that Garcia was pulled early from the contest due to an illness, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. "You saw him coughing on the mound," Baker told reporters. "That's one reason why we took him out earlier than last time." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though he apparently wasn't 100 percent healthy during the start, Garcia didn't show any signs of being under the weather based on his performance. He continued a remarkable run of good pitching, yielding his only run on a sacrifice fly while tying his season-high total in strikeouts en route to winning his fifth straight decision. Garcia's pitch count was only at 79 through six frames, but Baker elected not to take any chances with the young right-hander by letting him work deeper into the contest while he was ill. The ailment likely won't be anything that prevents Garcia from making his next turn through the rotation, which is set to come next weekend in Minnesota.
Jun 2 2021Garcia (4-3) earned the win over Boston on Tuesday, allowing one run one five hits and one walk while striking out six over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia kept Boston's bats mostly at bay, allowing only one extra-base hit and one run over seven frames. He induced 19 swinging strikes and notched his second straight quality start. Garcia has been very consistent this season, allowing no more than three runs in any of his 11 outings (nine starts). He'll carry a 2.72 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 60:17 K:BB into his next start, which is tentatively scheduled for Sunday at Toronto.
May 26 2021Garcia (3-3) earned the win over the Dodgers on Wednesday, pitching six innings and allowing one unearned run on two hits and one walk while striking out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander kept the National League's top-scoring team almost entirely at bay, allowing only an unearned run -- caused in part by his own error -- in the third inning. Garcia didn't allow any extra-base hits and issued just one free pass over his seven superb frames. He has yet to allow more than three runs in any appearance this season, helping him log a solid 2.93 overall ERA. Garcia will look to extend his current personal three-game win streak in his next start, which is expected to come against Boston early next week.
May 20 2021Garcia (2-3) allowed two runs on three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in five innings. He earned the win Thursday versus Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Two of the three hits against the right-hander left the yard as Garcia allowed solo home runs to Mark Canha and Tony Kemp. It was an otherwise solid start for Garcia, who has yet to yield more than three runs in an appearance. The 24-year-old has a 3.38 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 47:15 K:BB in 40 innings across nine games (seven starts). He lines up for a tough matchup next week at home versus the Dodgers.
May 16 2021Garcia (1-3) earned the win Saturday against the Rangers by allowing one run on five hits and two walks while fanning five across five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia has yet to pitch six complete innings this season, but he has allowed just one run in three of his last five appearances. He owns a 4.20 ERA across 15 innings in three starts this month. His next start is scheduled for next week against the Athletics on the road.
May 11 2021Garcia allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven over 5.1 innings in a no-decision against the Angels on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Astros' batters squandered opportunities early on, but they built a 5-1 lead entering the sixth inning before the wheels came off. Garcia was cruising until he gave up back-to-back home runs, both off cutters that didn't cut, to Jared Walsh and Justin Upton -- leaving him two outs shy of what would have been his first quality start. Brandon Bielak relieved Garcia and did not pitch well, eliminating the possibility of a win for the young starter. He's been the rotation fill-in for Jake Odorizzi (forearm), who is scheduled to throw to hitters Wednesday and could miss another two or three starts. Garcia is next scheduled to throw Saturday at home against Texas.
May 5 2021Garcia gave up three runs on two hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in 4.2 innings in Wednesday's 6-3 loss to the Yankees. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia was fairly effective at limiting baserunners, but Giancarlo Stanton took him deep for a two-run home run in the third inning and then followed up with an RBI double in the fifth. The 24-year-old Garcia still showed some promise, notching at least six strikeouts for the fourth time this season. He has a 3.28 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 28:9 K:BB in 24.2 innings overall. Jake Odorizzi (forearm) is headed on a rehab assignment, so Garcia tentatively lines up for one more turn in the rotation next week versus the Angels.
Apr 29 2021Garcia (0-3) was stuck with the loss Thursday despite allowing just one run on three hits over five innings against the Mariners. He struck out six and did not issue a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Around a solo shot allowed to Taylor Trammell in the third inning, Garcia was dominant, inducing 14 swinging strikes on just 73 pitches. The 0-3 record does not accurately reflect Garcia's performance so far this season; he now has a 2.70 ERA and 20:7 K:BB in 20 innings. Jake Odorizzi (forearm) is expected to miss an additional start or two, so Garcia figures to get another chance to make his case for a more permanent rotation spot.
Apr 28 2021Astros manager Dusty Baker said Garcia would start Thursday's series finale against the Mariners, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia will be returning to the mound on three days' rest after he made a 26-pitch relief appearance in Sunday's loss to the Angels. With that in mind, Garcia likely won't be asked to work deep into Thursday's start as he steps into the rotation spot that belonged to the injured Jake Odorizzi (forearm). Garcia may be serving as little more than a glorified opener for Kent Emanuel, who will be available to pitch after covering 8.2 innings of long relief last Saturday following Odorizzi's early departure.
Apr 21 2021Garcia (0-1) was charged with the loss against Colorado on Tuesday despite giving up two earned runs across 5.2 innings. He allowed three hits and three walks while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander averaged 65 pitches over his first two outings this season, so he had no issue absorbing 5.2 frames on 84 pitches against the Rockies. Garcia held Colorado scoreless until a two-out double off the bat of C.J. Cron in the sixth inning chased him from the game. He was impressive overall, however, inducing 14 swinging strikes and allowing only three hits. Garcia will likely return to a long-relief role moving forward, but he showed well enough Tuesday to remain a rotation candidate for Houston if the need arises.
Apr 19 2021Garcia will make a spot start Tuesday against the Rockies, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia will start in place of Lance McCullers (illness). Of all the places to make a spot start, Coors Field certainly isn't ideal, though the unintimidating Rockies lineup means it's at least a bit less scary than it usually is.
Apr 13 2021Garcia allowed two hits and one walk while striking out seven over 4.1 scoreless innings of relief in Monday's 6-2 loss to Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was the second appearance of the season for Garcia, who started for the Astros on April 5; off days since then have obviated the team's need for a fifth starter. He may transition into a relief role going forward. With Jake Odorizzi ready to make his season debut Tuesday and more off days ahead, the Astros won't need a fifth starter until April 24. At that point, Cristian Javier, who was sent to the alternate camp to get his work in, could rejoin the rotation.
Apr 6 2021Garcia allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out one over 3.1 innings in Monday's 7-6 loss to the Angels. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia missed time during spring training while under quarantine, so he wasn't as built up as a normal starter might be, but the Astros were hoping to get five innings. Instead, he became their third starter in the last four games who failed to finish the fifth inning. With four days off over the next 13 days, the Astros can get by with four starters for a stretch, allowing Garcia to build up his pitch count in bullpen sessions.
Mar 31 2021Astros manager Dusty Baker named Garcia the team's fifth starter Wednesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jake Odorizzi (conditioning) will join the Astros' starting rotation at some point, but he isn't expected to debut until at least mid-April as he continues to build up after a late start to camp. As a result, Garcia will serve as a starter to begin the regular season while Brandon Bielak takes on a bullpen role. Garcia made two appearances (one start) for Houston this spring and posted a 7.94 ERA and 1.94 WHIP in 5.2 innings. He should make his season debut against the Angels on Monday.
Mar 28 2021Garcia or Brandon Bielak will start the fifth game of the regular season, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Houston manager Dusty Baker mapped out the starters for the first four games but left the fifth slot unfilled. The plan is for Jake Odorizzi to eventually fill the role, but he needs time to build up innings and pitch count. That leaves Garcia and Bielak, a pair of stretched-out relievers who could receive meaningful usage early in the regular season. Whichever one does not serve as the No. 5 starter will be part of the bullpen.
Mar 25 2021Garcia allowed two hits and two walks while striking out five over four scoreless innings in Wednesday's spring game against Washington. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia gave the Astros length on a day when starter Jake Odorizzi lasted just three outs. The highlight of his outing was an immaculate fifth inning, when he struck out the side on nine pitches. Garcia, a potential starter for Houston in 2020, had been slowed during spring training while spending time in COVID-19 quarantine. With Odorizzi unlikely to be part of the rotation early in the season and Cristian Javier not yet stretched out, Garcia could be a rotation presence the first few weeks of April.
Mar 14 2021Garcia struck out two batters in a scoreless inning during Saturday's "B" game against Washington, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia is emerging as an important piece for the Astros, whose starting depth has been challenged during spring training. This was Garcia's debut in Grapefruit League play, and the right-hander hit 95 MPH with his fastball. He could get another three starts during the final two-plus weeks of spring training, which could put him in the five-inning range if he's needed for the first regular-season turn of the rotation.
Mar 13 2021Garica is throw in a "B" game Saturday against the Nationals, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia is a potential starter, but he hasn't thrown an inning in a spring game. He recently cleared the league's health and safety protocols. That doesn't leave much time to build up pitches and innings in the lead up to Opening Day.
Mar 11 2021Garcia (undisclosed) was cleared from the health and safety protocols Thursday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia was away from the team for nearly a week after being placed in the health and safety protocols. However, manager Dusty Baker told reporters that every player besides Pedro Baez (COVID-19) has returned to the team after quarantining. Garcia will be fighting for a roster spot for the remainder of spring training, though the addition of Jake Odorizzi will make his path more difficult.
Mar 4 2021Garcia will be away from camp for "several days" due to the league's health and safety protocols, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia had been scheduled to pitch in Thursday's spring game behind Lance McCullers, but he'll no longer be able to do so. Once he's able to return, the right-hander should compete for a spot in the starting rotation after Framber Valdez suffered a fractured left ring finger Tuesday.
Feb 17 2021The Yankees announced Wednesday that Garcia signed a minor-league contract with the organization that includes an invitation to big-league spring training. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 34-year-old Garcia has seen big-league action with the Phillies, Angels and Rangers over parts of the last eight seasons, compiling a 4.26 ERA and a 8.8 K-BB% for his career. Even if he's able to secure a spot in the Yankees' Opening Day bullpen, Garcia will be ticketed for a low-leverage role and won't offer much fantasy value, even in AL-only leagues that count holds as a category.
Oct 15 2020Garcia will be the opener for Game 5 of the ALCS against the Rays on Thursday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Astros don't anticipate Garcia making it through the lineup more than once. The 23-year-old jumped all the way from High-A to the majors this season and held his own in 12.1 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, though his 9:5 K:BB was unimpressive.
Oct 5 2020Garcia has been added to the Astros' roster for the upcoming series against the Athletics, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Astros adjusted their roster balance slightly, dropping bench infielder Jack Mayfield in favor of another reliever in Garcia. The 23-year-old righty cruised to a 2.92 ERA in his 12.1-inning debut this season, though he was helped by a .182 BABIP, and his 18.4 percent strikeout rate wasn't particularly impressive.
Sep 18 2020Garcia (0-1) allowed two runs on three hits and struck out two over 1.1 innings in a loss to the Diamondbacks on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia got through the sixth inning without much trouble, but he allowed an RBI triple to Pavin Smith before throwing a wild pitch that allowed Smith to score. The Astros were unable to cover Garcia's damage, and he took his first major-league result and loss. The 23-year-old righty has a 2.53 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and eight strikeouts across 10.2 innings this year. Garcia had been used as a long reliever and a spot starter once each prior to a shorter appearance Friday.
Sep 15 2020Garcia was designated for assignment by the Rangers on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia pitched well in his last appearance, but he had inconsistent results this season as he carried a 7.56 ERA and 2.28 WHIP over 8.1 innings. He'll be removed from the 40-man roster after Demarcus Evans was recalled by Texas in a corresponding move.
Sep 12 2020Garcia (0-2) was roughed up Friday, allowing four runs on a hit and three walks without recording an out in the a 10-6 loss to Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia was yanked immediately after a Matt Olson grand slam in the first inning. He only tossed eight of his 23 pitches for strikes. Typically a reliever, Garcia was making just his second start of the season in the opener role. He'll carry an 8.59 ERA into his next appearance.
Sep 10 2020Garcia will serve as the opener for Friday's game against the Athletics, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jordan Lyles will follow Garcia as the primary pitcher for the Rangers. The tandem combined to allow three runs across six innings during the Sept. 1 win over the Astros.
Sep 9 2020Garcia allowed a hit and two walks over five scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Athletics on Wednesday. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia's first major-league start can be considered mostly successful -- it was the Astros' bullpen that denied him the win Wednesday. He's allowed just one run, two hits and five walks over his first 9.1 innings. Garcia will likely get another turn in the rotation, which is expected to be next Wednesday versus the Rangers.
Sep 7 2020Garcia will join Houston's rotation to start Wednesday's game against the Athletics in Oakland, David Barron of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Houston will be playing its second doubleheader in four days Tuesday and recently lost another starter (Lance McCullers, neck) to the injured list, so Garcia will be called upon to fortify the rotation. The 23-year-old will likely have his pitch count capped during the start, but he should be able to cover at least five innings after he worked in long relief in his MLB debut Friday against the Angels. He covered 4.1 innings (66 pitches) out of the bullpen, giving up a run on one hit (a solo home run) and three walks while striking out two. Garcia worked as a starter in the minors in 2019, splitting time between High-A Fayetteville and Low-A Quad Cities and compiling a 2.98 ERA and 168 strikeouts in 108.2 innings while holding opposing hitters to a .172 average.
Sep 5 2020Garcia allowed one run on one hit and three walks while striking out two in Friday's 6-5 loss to the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia was needed early when starter Lance McCullers left the game after just 18 pitches. His contract was selected by the Astros a week ago, and this was the 23-year-old's MLB debut. Garcia's name has been bandied about as a fill-in or replacement starter, as Brandon Bielak has struggled in the rotation and the team has two doubleheaders coming up in the next four days. Garcia's workload Friday -- 66 pitches -- precludes him from throwing this weekend, but he could be ready for next Tuesday's doubleheader in Oakland.
Aug 31 2020Garcia will serve as the opener for Tuesday's game against the Rangers, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Look for Garcia to give the Rangers one or two innings before being replaced by the primary man Jordan Lyles. Garcia has allowed three runs on six hits and four walks across five innings pitched this season.
Aug 29 2020Garcia's contract was selected by the Astros on Saturday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia hadn't advanced past the High-A level in two minor-league seasons, but he'll join the 28-man roster. He worked mainly as a starter in the minors, and the team was stretching him out as a starter at alternate camp. He could provide Houston with rotation depth in the near future, but he'll work out of the bullpen to start, per Jake Kaplan of The Athletic. In 24 appearances (18 starts) in the minors last year, Garcia posted a 2.98 ERA and 168:50 K:BB over 108.2 innings. Chase De Jong was optioned to alternate camp in a corresponding move.
Aug 18 2020Garcia was recalled by the Rangers on Tuesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 33-year-old has been a capable enough reliever across his seven-year big-league career, posting a 4.17 ERA. He had an ERA as low as 2.65 for the Phillies in 2017 but posted marks of 6.07 and 4.35 over the last two seasons, so he'll presumably fill a lower-leverage role.
Jul 19 2020Garcia was reassigned to the Rangers' alternate training site Sunday, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia signed with the Rangers in January and was able to work at the main facility during camp, but he'll shift to the team's alternate site ahead of the regular season. The right-hander could be an option to fill in if injuries occur in the bullpen this season, but it's unlikely that he'd be used in high-leverage situations.
Jan 9 2020Garcia signed a one-year, $1.1 million contract with the Rangers on Thursday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander refused an outright assignment to Triple-A in October, but he'll find a spot with the Rangers on a split contract. Garcia's 4.35 ERA in 2019 was far better than the year before, but his 5.93 FIP suggests that the success may not be sustainable. If he can maintain a spot on the major-league roster, the 32-year-old will likely be used mainly in lower-leverage relief situations.
Oct 28 2019Garcia became a free agent Monday after refusing an outright assignment to Triple-A Salt Lake. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia's 4.35 ERA in 62 innings for the Angels this season was decent enough, though his 5.94 ERA suggests he overachieved. The veteran will enter the 2020 season at 33 years old and isn't be a lock for a big-league roster spot.
Aug 31 2019Garcia (2-1) earned the win Saturday, pitching a scoreless inning with two walks in a 10-4 win over the Red Sox.
Aug 16 2019Garcia tossed 1.2 scoreless relief innings Friday, allowing one hit and striking out two during a 7-2 loss to the White Sox.

Jul 22 2018Garcia (wrist) was reinstated from the 10-day DL on Sunday.Garcia will be good to go for Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader after being on the shelf since July 12 and missing just the minimum amount of time. He typically pitches in low-leverage situations, but could be called upon in a short-handed bullpen if starter Vince Velasquez is unable to provide a deep outing.
Jul 16 2018Garcia (wrist) began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Lehigh Valley over the weekend, making two appearances and giving up two runs on three hits over 1.2 innings. The 31-year-old, who owns a 4.74 ERA and 1.09 WHIP across 24.2 innings for the big club this season, has been on the shelf since June 12 with the strained right wrist. Garcia may make another appearance or two in the minors before likely rejoining the Phillies shortly after the All-Star break.
Jul 5 2018Garcia was promoted to High-A Potomac on Wednesday and went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in his Carolina League debut.Garcia moved up a rung on the minor-league ladder after slashing .294/.334/.398 with eight stolen bases and a 20:49 BB:K over 323 plate appearances. It's not eye-popping production, but the fact that Garcia merely held his own offensively as an 18-year-old in the South Atlantic League while playing an up-the-middle spot is reason enough to get excited about his long-term potential. He's likely to make his biggest fantasy impact in the steals or batting average categories, but his six-foot, 190-pound frame offers some power projection, too.
Jul 2 2018Garcia went 4-for-5 with a double, three runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base for Low-A Hagerstown in Sunday's win over West Virginia. The 18-year-old continues to put together some very impressive numbers, hitting .364 (32-for-88) over his last 23 games with 12 multi-hit performances, but the most exciting development for Garcia might be the emergence of some power to go along with his speed and contact skills -- five of his last 12 hits have been doubles, and he has a .159 ISO over that 23-game stretch, well above last season's .085 mark in rookie ball. The shortstop continues to rise up the prospect rankings, and he could be knocking on the door of a spot in the top 50 by season's end.
Jun 29 2018Garcia (wrist) threw a bullpen session Thursday, the Phillies' official site reports.Garcia has been out for two weeks with a right wrist strain but appears to be nearing a return. He's expected to need at least one more bullpen session before being activated.
Jun 16 2018Garcia was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a right wrist strain Saturday.Garcia struggled in his last appearance, giving up three earned runs on four hits without getting a single out Tuesday against the Rockies. It's possible his issues were injury-related. Jake Thompson and Yacksiel Rios were called up to replace Garcia and Mark Leiter Jr., who was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Jun 11 2018Garcia earned his tenth hold of the season Sunday against the Brewers, allowing two hits in two thirds of an inning, striking out one batter.Garcia has just one save on the season but looked to be in line for a second when he entered the game in the top of the ninth with a one-run lead. He got two outs against the bottom of the Brewers' order but then allowed back-to-back hits to pinch hitter Domingo Santana and leadoff man Lorenzo Cain before being removed in favor of Tommy Hunter, who got the final out and the save. Despite getting the ball in the ninth inning, Garcia doesn't seem likely to make a real push for the closer's job, as the Phillies appear to be firmly committed to a committee approach.
May 26 2018Garcia notched his first save of the season Saturday against the Blue Jays, allowing one hit while striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning.Seranthony Dominguez did some of the heavy lifting in between starter Aaron Nola and Garcia, coming into a tie game with two on in the seventh and getting out of that jam before pitching a scoreless eighth inning. However, Garcia deserves plenty of credit for striking out Justin Smoak and then getting Teoscar Hernandez to ground into a game-ending double-play (Josh Donaldson led off the inning with a single). The last four Phillies saves have gone to four different pitchers, with Dominguez, Hector Neris and Edubray Ramos also having notched saves over the last two weeks. Garcia may continue to be a part of that mix, but is unlikely to get saves often enough, or record enough strikeouts, to be overly useful in standard mixers.
May 26 2018Garcia went 4-for-4 with a walk, a double, two runs scored and two RBI for Low-A Hagerstown in Friday's win over Greensboro. The Nats' No. 4 fantasy prospect just turned 18 on May 16 and he's been celebrating in style, posting a phenomenal .405/.422/.595 slash line over his last 11 games. Garcia is still a long way from the majors, but his over performance this year in full-season ball has been impressive given his age, and speed and hit tool give him plenty of fantasy promise if and when he gets to the Show.
May 23 2018Garcia threw 1.2 innings in Tuesday's loss to the Braves, striking out three without allowing a single baserunner.Garcia didn't allow the ball to leave the infield, getting two groundouts to go with his trio of strikeouts. The Phillies' bullpen is currently undergoing a transition period with no clear closer, but Garcia doesn't seem to be in the mix for saves at the moment. The veteran has been used in the most important situations for the Phillies this season, at least by Leverage Index, though he's only once pitched in the ninth inning. The team clearly trusts him in key situations, and it wouldn't be too surprising to see him in the mix for saves at some point this year, but there have been no indications of that happening any time soon.
May 10 2018Garcia pitched a scoreless eighth inning Thursday against the Giants, not allowing a single baserunner and earning his seventh hold of the season.Garcia entered the game with a three-run lead and didn't have any trouble keeping the lead at three. He faced the top three hitters in the Giants' order, getting one popout and a pair of groundouts. His ERA now sits at 3.00 through 15 innings. So far this season, Garcia has been used in the second-highest leverage situations in the Phillies' bullpen after closer Hector Neris, suggesting that he could be the reliever to own if Neris gets injured. That situation could change with the return of Pat Neshek, but that won't happen for at least another month, as Neshek recently suffered a forearm strain while rehabbing his shoulder injury.
Apr 13 2018Garcia went 4-for-6 with two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base for Low-A Hagerstown in Thursday's extra-inning loss to Greensboro. The shortstop was 0-for-11 through his first four games of the season, but he seems to be acclimating quickly to the level and has gone 8-for-18 since then, although all the hits have been singles. Garcia won't turn 18 for another month, so any success he has at the plate in Low-A is impressive, and while his glove remains his calling card as a prospect, his speed and hit tool still give him some future fantasy appeal in deeper dynasty leagues.
Apr 5 2018Garcia will begin the season with Low-A Hagerstown, Mike Rosenbaum of MLB.com reports. The Nats' No. 5 fantasy prospect put together a strong performance last season as a 17-year-old in Rookie ball, slashing .302/.330/.387 with 11 steals in 13 attempts. Garcia will be paired with Yasel Antuna at Hagerstown, and the duo will likely stick together through the lower levels of the minors as the club's double-play combo of the future.
Mar 18 2018Garcia has given up three runs on six hits and four walks while striking out eight across 6.1 innings this spring.Garcia is coming off a stellar season in which he posted a 2.65 ERA across 71.1 innings while recording 60 strikeouts. He looks just about ready for the 2018 season and figures to be in a setup role out of the Philadelphia bullpen in front of Hector Neris.
Sep 10 2017Garcia picked up his ninth hold of the season Saturday with a scoreless inning in a 5-4 win over the Nationals.Garcia was impressive, using a fastball that topped out at 100 mph and hard sliders to strike out Ryan Zimmerman, Daniel Murphy and Anthony Rendon. He's settled in to a setup role in front of Hector Neris and is likely next in line for save chances in Philly.
Aug 12 2017Garcia retired both hitters he faced while striking out one to earn his second save Saturday against the Mets.Garcia was given a rare save opportunity, but successfully protected a two-run lead. On the season, he also has four holds and three blown saves.
Aug 5 2017Garcia was tagged with his third loss of the season after allowing a run on two walks and a hit in Friday's 4-3 loss to the Rockies.Garcia has moved into a setup role after the departures of Pat Neshek and Joaquin Benoit. He has hit a bit of a rough patch of late, having allowed runs in three of his last four appearances. The Phillies recently brought Edubray Ramos back from the minors and could move him into the eighth inning role if Garcia's struggles continue.
Jul 23 2017Garcia recorded a strikeout and didn't allow a baserunner during a scoreless ninth inning to record his first save of the season in Sunday's win over Milwaukee.Hector Neris had pitched in each of the past two games, so that's likely why Garcia entered in the ninth for the save opportunity. However, the Philadelphia closer job has been somewhat fluid all season, so it isn't out of the question that Garcia sees more work closing out games moving forward. He should at least be on your fantasy radar, and especially if you're chasing saves.
Jul 8 2017Garcia has a 2.70 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with 26 strikeouts across 33.1 innings this season. The 30-year-old hasn't allowed a run over his last 10.2 innings (eight appearances), and has given up only four hits in that stretch. Garcia is in the midst of his best season in the majors, but hasn't seen many high-leverage situations since early in the season.
Jul 2 2017Garcia signed a $2.5 million deal with the Phillies on Sunday.A glove-first shortstop prospect, Garcia might be the best defensive middle infielder in this year's July 2 signing class. He is a good runner, but not a burner, and may only offer 10-to-15 steals annually by the time he reaches the majors. The 5-foot-10, 170-pound Dominican does not project to offer much power, so his hit tool will need to max out for him to hit higher than seventh or eighth in a big-league lineup.
Jun 23 2017Garcia would have been used for a save chance Thursday had the Phillies not scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Corey Seidman of CSN Philadelphia reports.Garcia ended up getting the final three outs Thursday in a non-save situation. He's worth a speculative add given Hector Neris' inability to lock down the closing gig. However, manager Pete Mackanin did want to send Pat Neshek back out for the ninth inning after he threw just five pitches in the eighth, but said Neshek told him he didn't feel like he could after pitching for a third straight day Thursday. Neshek disputes that story, but the relevant point for fantasy owners is Garcia may not be the preferred ninth inning guy despite the fact he would have been used in a save chance Thursday. Given how few save chances the Phillies generate, no matter which pitcher you roster, it is unlikely they will rack up many saves, and it does seem like the team ultimately would prefer Neris in the closing role given how many opportunities he has received this season.
Jun 6 2017Garcia tossed a scoreless inning with one strikeout in Monday's 11-4 win over the Braves.Garcia lowered his ERA to 1.83 and now has a 12:4 K:BB in 19.2 innings. His strikeout rate is down significantly from his past stints in the majors, but so is his walk rate. A 3.91 FIP indicates his ERA could be on the rise in the future.
May 12 2017The Phillies recalled Garcia from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday. The reliever will add bullpen depth and take the roster spot of starter Jake Thompson, whom the Phillies optioned Wednesday. Garcia hasn't allowed a run in 4.1 big-league innings this year but toiled with a 6.46 ERA last season.
Apr 12 2017Garcia was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Wednesday.Garcia will take the spot on the 25-man roster previously occupied by Adam Morgan, who was demoted to Triple-A on Tuesday. It's expected that Garcia will work in low-leverage scenarios out of the Phillies bullpen after turning in a 6.46 ERA and 1.89 WHIP in 15.1 innings with the big club a season ago.
Mar 11 2017Garcia said he is working on adding a splitter to his arsenal this spring, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.Garcia has a mid-90s fastball and a wipeout slider already, but his biggest issue has always been his command. He's managed to keep the walks in check thus far this spring with just one in 5.2 innings. Manager Pete Mackanin admitted that Garcia is on the roster bubble as the Phillies may need his 40-man roster spot if they decide to add a non-roster invitee to their squad when they head north for the start of the regular season. Given Garcia's tools, it is likely he would be claimed by another club looking for bullpen depth.
Sep 10 2016Garcia was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday. He struggled mightily in 8.2 innings with the big club earlier in the year (7.27 ERA), but has been much more fortunate at Triple-A. Garcia had a 2.14 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 53 strikeouts in 54.2 innings with Lehigh Valley. He'll serve in a low-leverage relief role over the final three weeks.
Aug 14 2016Garcia was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday, Stephen Gross of the Morning Call reports.Garcia struggled during his latest stint with the big club, allowing five earned runs off 10 hits over just 5.2 innings. He's put together a solid season at Lehigh Valley, where he owns a 2.58 ERA and 1.21 WHIP after pitching in 39 games. In a corresponding move, the Phillies recalled Adam Morgan.
Aug 2 2016Garcia has been recalled by the Phillies on Tuesday. The 29-year-old has been solid this season for Triple-A Lehigh Valley, posting a 2.58 ERA with 43 strikeouts in 45.1 innings. He will take the place of Andrew Bailey, who was designated for assignment by the Phillies.
Jul 2 2016Garcia signed a $1.3 million deal with the Nationals in July 2016.Garcia is a well-rounded 16-year-old shortstop prospect out of the Dominican, but his top present tools are his arm and his glove. He is the No. 3 international prospect according to Baseball America, and is ranked No. 7 by MLB.com. His fantasy upside is not as high as some of the other shortstops in this class, but he has a chance to be an everyday player in the big leagues with no major flaws, which could be plenty useful in dynasty leagues down the road.
Jun 13 2016Garcia was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Monday.Garcia was optioned in a corresponding move that will select Zach Eflin's contract before Tuesday's game. The reliever pitched two total innings in his most recent stint with the Phillies, letting up two hits, two runs, and two walks.
Jun 10 2016Garcia was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday. With Vince Valasquez (biceps) heading to the DL, Garcia got the call-up, his second appearance in the majors this season.
