Jun 20 2025Gibson plans to opt out of his minor-league contract with the Rays, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson has allowed 23 earned runs in only 12.1 innings in the big leagues this year, but he's been great since signing with the Rays, turning in an 0.52 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across 17.1 frames at Triple-A Durham. Despite his resurgence, the 37-year-old righty didn't have a clear path to big-league playing time with the Rays, so he'll now enter the open market and look for another opportunity that may lead to the majors.
May 28 2025The Rays agreed to a contract with Gibson on Wednesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson made four starts with the Orioles before being released May 20, and he logged a 16.78 ERA and 2.92 WHIP over 12.1 innings during that stretch. The veteran will get a fresh start with Tampa Bay, though it's not clear where he'll fit in the organization's plans. The Rays currently don't have any holes in their rotation, and the bullpen boasts a 3.26 ERA.
May 20 2025The Orioles released Gibson on Tuesday, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was designated for assignment by Baltimore over the weekend and has now been jettisoned from the organization. Gibson made just four starts after inking a one-year, $5.25 million contract in March and surrendered 23 earned runs with a 10:7 K:BB over 12.1 innings.
May 18 2025The Orioles designated Gibson for assignment Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 37-year-old inked a one-year, $5.25 million contract with Baltimore in March, but he's been dumped from the big-league roster after posting a 16.78 ERA, 2.92 WHIP and 10:7 K:BB across just 12.1 innings. Gibson was serviceable for the Cardinals last year with a 4.24 ERA in 30 starts, but the Orioles couldn't afford to give him a longer leash with his horrible performance only amplifying the club's disappointing start to 2025.
May 17 2025Gibson (0-3) took the loss against the Nationals on Saturday, allowing six runs on six hits and one walk with one strikeout while recording just two outs in the first inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson allowed the first six batters he faced to reach base and needed 47 pitches to record only two outs before being pulled in favor of Charlie Morton. The veteran has struggled mightily through four starts this season, yielding five earned runs or more in three of them while failing to exceed four innings in any outing. He'll carry an unsightly 16.78 ERA, 2.92 WHIP and 10:7 K:BB across 12.1 innings into a tough road matchup with the Red Sox next week.
May 10 2025Gibson (0-2) allowed five runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out four over four innings to take the loss Saturday versus the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson has been awful since he was called up April 29. He's pitched to a 13.11 ERA, 2.49 WHIP and 9:6 K:BB across 11.2 innings over three starts after signing with the Orioles in late March. The 37-year-old could be at risk of losing his place on the major-league roster when Zach Eflin (lat) returns Sunday, as Gibson hasn't done enough to warrant sticking around. However, it's also possible Gibson stays in the rotation since Charlie Morton pitched out of the bullpen Saturday, tossing two perfect innings. In any case, Gibson is not an option for the vast majority of fantasy managers given his current level of performance.
May 4 2025Gibson did not factor into the decision in Sunday's 11-6 loss to the Royals, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk with three strikeouts over four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson allowed a solo home run in the second inning and a two-run single in the fourth. He generated 10 swinging strikes on 81 pitches and failed to exceed four frames for the second straight start since debuting Tuesday. The veteran hurler will carry a rough 14.09 ERA, 2.48 WHIP and 5:3 K:BB across 7.2 innings into a road matchup with the Angels next weekend.
Apr 10 2025Gibson struck out four batters and allowed one earned run on three hits and no walks over 3.1 innings in his season debut for Triple-A Norfolk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Due to his late signing in spring training, Gibson didn't have enough time to get fully stretched out prior to Opening Day, prompting the Orioles to option him to Triple-A. Gibson remained at the Orioles' spring facility in Florida for the first two weeks of the minor-league season to continue ramping up before he was cleared to report to Norfolk for his 2025 debut. The 37-year-old righty was efficient in the outing, spotting 33 of his 47 pitches for strikes. He'll likely need to build up to around 70 to 80 pitches before becoming a rotation option for Baltimore, so expect him to make at least two or three more starts at Triple-A. With Zach Eflin (lat) landing on the injured list Wednesday and lacking a clear timeline for a return, Gibson should have a fairly clear path to a rotation spot once he's deemed ready to join the big club, likely in late April or early May.
Apr 9 2025Gibson tossed a three-inning live batting practice session Sunday and is soon expected to report to Triple-A Norfolk, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Because he remained a free agent throughout the offseason before signing a one-year, $5.25 million contract with the Orioles less than a week ahead of Opening Day, Gibson has essentially been going through his own version of spring training. He's steadily ramped up the volume of his throwing program and should be on the cusp of pitching in minor-league games. Gibson will likely need to complete 2-to-3 starts at Norfolk before he's available as an option in the big-league rotation around May 1. The Orioles could have a pressing need for Gibson, as the team's starting depth has been tested in the first month of the season with injuries to Zach Eflin (lat), Grayson Rodriguez (elbow), Trevor Rogers (kneecap), Albert Suarez (shoulder), Chayce McDermott (lat), Tyler Wells (elbow) and Kyle Bradish (elbow).
Mar 24 2025The Orioles optioned Gibson to minor-league camp Monday, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson signed a one-year, $5.25 million contract with the Orioles on Friday to bring depth to a rotation that has Grayson Rodriguez, Tyler Wells and Kyle Bradish all missing the start of the season due to elbow injuries. Despite not being with a team during most of spring training, the 37-year-old Gibson has pitched in simulated games against college hitters and has built up to 70 pitches, and the plan is for the veteran right-hander to join Baltimore's rotation "somewhere around" May 1, per Weyrich. Gibson went 8-8 across 30 regular-season starts with the Cardinals in 2024 and logged a 4.24 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 151:68 K:BB over 169.2 innings.
Mar 21 2025Gibson signed a one-year, $5.25 million contract with the Orioles on Friday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Grayson Rodriguez, Tyler Wells and Kyle Bradish all set to miss the start of the season due to elbow injuries, the Orioles will bring in Gibson to give their rotation a bit of extra depth heading into Opening Day. The 37-year-old righty left Baltimore to play in St. Louis last season, where he turned in a 4.24 ERA and 1.35 WHIP alongside a 151:68 K:BB over 169.2 innings. He's been pitching in simulated games against college hitters to stay in shape during the offseason, though his 2025 debut will be delayed while the Orioles put him through a normal spring ramp-up process, per Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com.
Mar 7 2025Gibson has reached 60 pitches in simulated games against college hitters and still plans to pitch in the majors this season, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There's been little free-agent buzz around Gibson since the Cardinals elected to decline his $12 million club option for 2025 back in October. He's 37 but has made 30-plus starts each of the last three seasons while producing a 4.68 ERA and 1.33 WHIP. Gibson appears to be doing what he can to keep his arm ready, and he should eventually catch on with a club in need of a veteran innings-eater.
Oct 31 2024The Cardinals will decline Gibson's $12 million club option for 2025, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He will be paid a $1 million buyout instead and allowed to test free agency. Gibson, 37, had a solid 2024 campaign during his lone year in St. Louis, collecting a 4.24 ERA and a 151:68 K:BB over 169.2 innings covering 30 starts. However, with the Cardinals looking to trim payroll they've elected to move on from the veteran right-hander.
Sep 26 2024Gibson didn't factor into the decision Thursday against Colorado, allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits and three walks across four innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson failed to pitch into the fifth inning for the first time in 13 starts. Three of his four hits allowed went for extra bases, including a two-run home run by Charlie Blackmon. Gibson has allowed nine home runs in his last eight starts, posting a 4.98 ERA during that stretch. With three games left on the schedule for St. Louis, Thursday's outing was likely the last we'll see of Gibson in 2024. He finishes the season with an 8-8 record, a 4.24 ERA and a 151:68 K:BB.
Sep 21 2024Gibson (8-8) took the loss Friday as the Cardinals fell 5-1 to the Guardians, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A Thomas Saggese throwing error allowed Gibson to barely qualify for his 13th quality start of the season, but he once again didn't get much run support. The right-hander has only one win since the All-Star break, going 1-5 over his last 11 outings despite a respectable 4.08 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 50:24 K:BB through 64 innings. Gibson will try to close out his season on a high note next weekend on the road in San Francisco.
Sep 14 2024Gibson (8-7) took the loss Saturday, giving up five runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks over 5.1 innings as the Cardinals were downed 7-2 by the Blue Jays. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was locked in a 1-1 pitchers' duel with Jose Berrios through five innings, Gibson walked two batters to load the bases with one out in the sixth before an error charged to Masyn Winn helped open the floodgates. While Saturday's unearned runs cushioned the blow to his ERA, Gibson has been tagged with at least five runs in three of his last six starts. He'll look to bounce back in his next outing, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the Guardians.
Sep 7 2024Gibson allowed three hits and three walks while striking out nine over 6.2 shutout innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson dueled with Logan Gilbert, but the St. Louis starter ultimately didn't stay in the game long enough to get the win. He threw 112 pitches (63 strikes) in his first scoreless outing since June 14. It's an encouraging effort for Gibson, who struggled to a 5.77 ERA over 34.1 innings in August. The veteran starter has a 4.20 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 143:59 K:BB through 154.1 innings over 27 starts this season. His next outing is projected to be a road start at Toronto. Gibson should get a little extra rest down the stretch with the Cardinals expected to go to a six-man rotation starting next week when Lance Lynn (knee) comes off the injured list.
Aug 31 2024Gibson (8-6) earned the win against the Yankees on Saturday, allowing one run on five hits and no walks with six strikeouts over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson tossed three separate 1-2-3 innings and earned his first win since July 7. While he threw just 55 of 93 pitches for strikes, this was only the second outing in which the veteran didn't walk a batter this season. On the year, he owns a 4.39 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 134:56 K:BB across 147.2 innings and lines up for a home matchup with the Mariners next weekend.
Aug 27 2024Gibson (7-6) allowed seven runs on five hits and four walks over 4.1 innings Monday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson coughed up a two-run shot to Manny Machado in the first inning and set the tone for a poor performance. The Padres scored another pair in the third inning before piling on four more runs in the fifth. Gibson has given up 15 earned runs over 14.1 innings in his last three starts, driving his season ERA up from 3.99 to 4.54 in the process. Since his last win July 7, he's gone 0-3 with a 5.86 ERA over eight outings. Gibson is projected for a road matchup with the Yankees this weekend.
Aug 21 2024Gibson allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five over 5.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Brewers on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson induced three double plays over the first four innings to cover his mistakes. The Brewers broke through for single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, and Gibson left with the game tied at 2-2. He's posted just two quality starts over six outings since the All-Star break, allowing a total of 18 runs (17 earned) across 34.2 innings in that span. For the season, the veteran right-hander has a 4.22 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 126:52 K:BB through 136.1 innings over 24 starts. Gibson's next start is projected to come at home versus the Padres.
Aug 14 2024Gibson (7-5) took the loss against Cincinnati on Wednesday, allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out six batters over 4.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was particularly hurt by the long ball, as the Reds scored their first six runs by way of four homers, including two by Jonathan India. Prior to Wednesday, Gibson had been pretty good at keeping the ball in the park, posting a 1.0 HR/9 on the season and surrendering just two homers over his previous six starts. Gibson's problem with home runs Wednesday may thus prove to be just an aberration, and he'll look to bounce back in his next start, which tentatively lines up to be at home against Milwaukee.
Aug 9 2024Gibson did not factor into the decision in Thursday's loss to the Rays, allowing two runs on eight hits and one walk over six innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Both runs charged to Gibson came across in the opening frame after he surrendered back-to-back hits to open the contest, followed by a two-run single from Dylan Carlson with two outs. The right-hander was able to keep the Rays off the board over the next five innings however, generating 11 whiffs while posting at least six strikeouts for the third time in his last four starts. Gibson is still looking for his first win since July 7, though he has managed to go six or more innings in three of his five outings over that span.
Aug 3 2024Gibson did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 5-4 win against the Cubs, allowing four runs on five hits and one walk with seven strikeouts over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson allowed four runs over his first two innings but rebounded with five scoreless frames. The veteran was efficient, throwing 65 of 96 pitches for strikes and retiring the final seven batters he faced, but he has now yielded three earned runs or more in seven of his past 10 starts and has not won a game since July 7. On the year, he owns a 4.04 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 109:47 K:BB across 120.1 innings and lines up for a home matchup with the Rays next week.
Jul 27 2024Gibson (7-4) allowed two runs on six hits and three walks while failing to record a strikeout over five innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Nationals were able to stake out a 2-0 lead on Gibson's watch, and the Cardinals' bullpen made sure their starter would not get off the hook. Gibson has posted a 17:9 K:BB over 20.2 innings across his last four starts, allowing 10 runs in that span. That's just a little worse than his 3.97 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 102:46 K:BB for the year would indicates, marks he's achieved in 113.1 innings across 20 starts. The veteran right-hander is projected to make his next start on the road versus the Cubs.
Jul 21 2024Gibson came away with a no-decision in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against Atlanta, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over 6.2 innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander needed exactly 100 pitches (66 strikes) to record his ninth quality start of the season, but Gibson saw his eighth win slip away after he left the mound in the bottom of the seventh inning in a game the Cardinals eventually lost in 10. Gibson hadn't lasted more than five frames in an outing in over a month, so the rest afforded by the All-Star break appears to have done him some good. He'll take a 3.99 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 102:43 K:BB through 108.1 innings into his next start, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the Nationals.
Jul 14 2024Gibson came away with a no-decision in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Cubs, giving up four runs on 10 hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All four runs scored in the second inning as Chicago batted around, with the biggest blow being a two-run shot by Miguel Amaya. Gibson wound up exiting after 97 pitches (56 strikes) as he failed to last more than five innings for the fourth straight start, a stretch in which he's stumbled to a 7.50 ERA, 2.11 WHIP and 23:10 K:BB in 18 innings. The veteran righty will try to use the All-Star break to regroup, but there are warning signs his numbers could continue to regress after a promising start to 2024 -- his 91.0 mph average velocity on his fastball would be his lowest since 2016, while his 9.5 percent walk rate would be his highest over a full season since 2018.
Jul 7 2024Gibson (7-3) earned the win Sunday over the Nationals, allowing three runs on nine hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson got through the first five innings allowing just two runs, but allowed the first three hitters to reach in the sixth before getting pulled. The veteran has won three of his last four starts and has had quality starts in four of his last seven outings. The 36-year-old has helped stabilize the Cardinals rotation, he has a 3.96 ERA and 1.29 WHIP through 97.2 innings.
Jul 2 2024Gibson (6-3) earned the win against the Pirates on Tuesday, allowing four runs on five hits and one walk with eight strikeouts over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was cruising early, striking out the side in each of the second and fourth innings, but he allowed four runs on two homers in the fifth. He bounced back with his control after walking five batters June 26 but was pulled after a season-low 79 pitches and has surrendered four earned runs in back-to-back outings. On the season, the veteran owns a 3.88 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 85:37 K:BB over 92.2 innings and lines up for a road matchup against the Nationals this weekend.
Jun 26 2024Gibson (5-3) allowed four runs on four hits and five walks while striking out four over four innings to take the loss versus Atlanta in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson made his first start since June 14 -- a stint on the bereavement list, a bout of back tightness and a rainout combined to keep him out of game action for 12 days. He wasn't sharp, throwing 50 of 87 pitches for strikes Wednesday, with the five walks being a season high. This was his first loss since April 13 and the first time he's given up more than three runs since May 17. Gibson has a 3.70 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 77:36 K:BB over 87.2 innings across 15 starts this season. He's projected to make his next start at Pittsburgh.
Jun 25 2024Gibson and the Cardinals won't face Atlanta on Tuesday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Tuesday's game will be made up via a doubleheader Wednesday, and Gibson will take the mound for Game 1. The 36-year-old righty threw seven scoreless innings during his most recent start, though back tightness caused him to miss his last turn through the rotation.
Jun 23 2024The Cardinals list Gibson (back) as their probable starter for Tuesday's game against Atlanta at Busch Stadium. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After coming off the bereavement list Wednesday, Gibson had been scheduled to start the Cardinals' series finale versus the Marlins later in the day, but he ended up being scratched shortly before opening pitch due to his back tightening up on him while he was going through his pregame routine. Matthew Liberatore was called upon for a spot start Wednesday in his stead, but Gibson looks like he'll be ready to go for his next turn through the Cardinals rotation. The veteran right-hander has submitted quality starts in three of his last five outings while turning in a 2.20 ERA and 1.05 WHIP over that stretch.
Jun 20 2024Gibson (back) is likely to make his next scheduled start Tuesday against Atlanta, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was a late scratch from Wednesday's start in Miami due to back tightness. He will play catch Thursday to determine whether he could be available in relief for that game, but that's viewed as unlikely. Instead of just pushing his next start back a couple days, the Cardinals seem content to effectively skip his turn and have him ready to go Tuesday.
Jun 19 2024Gibson was scratched from Wednesday's start in Miami due to back tightness, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Matthew Liberatore will draw the start Wednesday on short notice, as Gibson's back must have tightened up on him while he was warming up before the game. Consider Gibson day-to-day until the Cardinals provide more details.
Jun 17 2024Gibson (personal) is expected to be activated from the bereavement list in time for his next scheduled start Wednesday in Miami, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was officially placed on the bereavement list Sunday, but it won't cost him his next turn in the rotation after he misses the minimum three days. The right-hander tossed seven shutout innings versus the Cubs his last time out to lower his ERA on the season to 3.44.
Jun 16 2024The Cardinals placed Gibson on the bereavement list Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson has left the team following a death in the family. Per MLB rules, players placed on the bereavement list have to be deactivated for a minimum of three days and a maximum of seven days, making it unclear if Gibson will be ready to rejoin the team ahead of his next scheduled start. The Cardinals had confirmed Gibson as their starting pitcher for Wednesday's game in Miami, though that announcement was made prior to his placement on the bereavement list.
Jun 14 2024Gibson (5-2) earned the win Friday over the Cubs, allowing just two hits and a walk over seven scoreless innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was excellent Friday, turning in a season-high seven innings in his first scoreless outing of the year. The 36-year-old Gibson has been solid of late, working to a 2.19 ERA over his last five starts. Overall, his ERA is down to 3.44 on the campaign with a 1.20 WHIP and 73:31 K:BB across 83.2 innings. Gibson's currently scheduled to face the Marlins on the road in his next start.
Jun 8 2024Gibson allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out seven batters over six innings in a no-decision versus Colorado on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson yielded a run in the first inning but then kept the Rockies off the scoreboard in each of the following four frames. However, the veteran right-hander ran into trouble in the sixth, surrendering a leadoff homer to Ezequiel Tovar and another pair of hits that plated an additional run. Gibson was allowed to finish off the inning to complete the quality start, and he was taken off the hook for a potential loss when St. Louis plated four unearned runs in the bottom of the frame. While the eight hits he allowed tied a season-worst mark and his final stat line wasn't overly impressive, the quality start was Gibson's second in his past three outings.
Jun 3 2024Gibson did not factor into the decision in Monday's loss to the Astros, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks with eight strikeouts over 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson allowed a two-run home run to Yordan Alvarez in the third inning and was pulled with a 4-3 lead in the sixth after allowing a run and loading the bases. Andrew Kittredge was able to get out of the jam, but the Astros later rallied for four runs in the eighth. Despite faltering late, Gibson has now pitched into the sixth inning in 10 of his 12 starts this season. In those 12 games, Gibson has posted a 3.69 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 60:28 K:BB. He tentatively lines up for a home matchup against the Rockies on Saturday.
May 28 2024Gibson (4-2) earned the win Tuesday over Cincinnati, allowing one run on two hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was excellent Tuesday, as he held the Reds to one hit until Will Benson ended his shutout bid with a homer in the sixth inning. The 36-year-old Gibson has held opponents to two earned runs or fewer in eight of his last nine outings. He's lowered his ERA to 3.60 with a 1.22 WHIP and 52:25 K:BB across 11 starts (65 innings) this year. Gibson's currently in line for a road matchup with the Astros in his next outing early next week.
May 23 2024Gibson allowed three unearned runs on five hits and struck out three without walking a batter over four innings in a no-decision versus the Orioles on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson exited the contest after a rain delay, and the Cardinals got him off the hook for the loss once play resumed. This was the first time in 10 starts this season he didn't walk a batter, though he was a little shaky with just 50 of 84 pitches thrown for strikes and one wild pitch in the contest. He's at a 3.81 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 46:23 K:BB over 59 innings this season, and he's allowed more than three runs just three times. Gibson is lined up to make his next start at Cincinnati.
May 17 2024Gibson (3-2) allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks over six-plus innings Friday, striking out three and earning a win over the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was in line for a quality start after giving up three runs through six frames. He put two runners on base to begin the seventh inning and was eventually charged with both. He'd gone five straight starts with two or fewer earned runs allowed before Fridya's hiccup. Gibson's season ERA climbed back to 4.09 with a 43:23 K:BB through 55 frames. He's in line to face the Orioles at home next week.
May 11 2024Gibson allowed two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out seven over five-plus innings in a no-decision versus the Brewers on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson also hit a batter, which forced in the Brewers' first run of the game. The wildness brought an end to his four-start run of quality starts, as he threw just 55 of 104 pitches for strikes Saturday. Gibson is at a 3.67 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 40:20 K:BB through 49 innings across eight starts this season. He had a 2.6 BB/9 in each of the previous two seasons, but it's now at 3.7 in 2024. While that hasn't led to more damage in the runs column, it's a dangerous trend for a 36-year-old whose best trait is his ability to eat innings. Gibson is projected to make his next start at home versus the Red Sox.
May 6 2024Gibson allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out four batters over six innings in a no-decision against the Mets on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson yielded a run in the first inning Monday, but he didn't allow the Mets to score again until they put up two runs against him in the fifth frame. The veteran hurler completed one more scoreless inning after that to record his seventh straight outing of at least six frames to begin the campaign. Gibson's ability to eat up innings didn't correlate with success early in the season -- he gave up 13 runs across his first 19 frames -- but he's turned things around admirably since, posting four consecutive quality starts during which he's allowed just five earned runs across 25 innings. The right-hander has thus lowered his ERA to 3.68 and become at least a semi-viable fantasy target for managers in need of starting pitching despite his tepid 33:16 K:BB across 44 frames.
Apr 30 2024Gibson came away with a no-decision in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Tigers, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over seven innings in a 2-1 win. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A Riley Greene solo shot in the fourth inning was the only damage off Gibson, but he left the mound in line for the loss as he got out-dueled by Jack Flaherty. The Cardinals were able to rally in the ninth to take Gibson off the hook, however. He generated 30 called or swinging strikes among his 98 pitches while setting a new season high in strikeouts, and the 36-year-old righty sports a 3.79 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 29:14 K:BB through 38 innings. Gibson lines up to make his next start at home early next week against the Mets.
Apr 24 2024Gibson (2-2) earned the win against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over six innings while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson got off to a rocky start, allowing back-to-back hits while also hitting Joc Pederson with a pitch to open the game. However, the right-hander managed to escape the inning with only one run coming across before shutting out the Diamondbacks over the next five frames. Gibson has now gone at least six innings in each of his first five starts to open the season, posting a 20:12 K:BB over that stretch. He's also gone two starts without allowing a home run after allowing at least one long ball in each of his first three outings.
Apr 19 2024Gibson yielded a run on three hits and four walks over six innings in a no-decision Friday. He struck out three in the loss to Milwaukee. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was tagged with a run in the third inning but otherwise didn't face much trouble in the quality start. He was in line for a tough-luck loss before the Cardinals pushed the game to extra innings. After earning a win in his Cardinals debut, Gibson was hammered for 11 runs over his last two starts. Friday's outing lowered his ERA to 5.04 with a 14:10 K:BB through 25 frames. Gibson is currently projected to face Arizona at home next week.
Apr 13 2024Gibson (1-2) took the loss against Arizona on Saturday, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two batters over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson fell behind 1-0 in the first frame but rebounded with four consecutive scoreless innings. However, he saw a quality start slip away in the sixth when Lourdes Gurriel's three-run homer gave the Diamondbacks a 4-1 lead. Gibson has provided a solid workload for St. Louis so far this season, going at least six innings in each of his three starts. However, his record now sits at 1-2, and his 6.16 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 11:6 K:BB over 19 frames aren't going to make any waves in fantasy circles.
Apr 8 2024Gibson (1-1) took the loss Sunday against the Marlins, allowing seven runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out five over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Marlins jumped all over Gibson in the first inning for six runs on five hits, which included two three-run homers off the bats of Jazz Chisholm and Nick Gordon. After a rough opening frame, Gibson was able to then settle in, allowing just two more hits the rest of the way. Gibson has been able to go at least six innings in both starts this season, though he's allowed nine runs on 11 hits (four home runs) in 13 innings. The 36-year-old will look to bounce back in a projected road start against the Diamondbacks this upcoming week.
Apr 1 2024Gibson (1-0) earned the win over San Diego on Monday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson gave up a pair of solo homers, but the Padres otherwise failed to cross the plate against him. The veteran hurler didn't dominate -- he notched just eight swinging strikes and four punchouts -- but he limited traffic on the basepaths and went deep into the contest, throwing 94 pitches. The start was Gibson's first as a Cardinal after he went 15-9 despite posting a mediocre 4.73 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 7.4 K/9 with Baltimore last season.
Mar 3 2024Gibson allowed three runs on three hits and struck out two over two innings in his first Grapefruit League appearance of the season. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was tagged for two home runs in his first spring start. The veteran starter had a 4.73 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 157:55 K:BB over 192 innings for the Orioles last season before signing a one-year deal with the Cardinals in November. Gibson can still eat innings to an extent, but the results are likely to be mediocre -- his ERA has been over 4.50 in four of the last five seasons.
Nov 21 2023Gibson reached a one-year deal Tuesday with the Cardinals, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's a one-year, $12 million deal with a club option for 2025, per Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com. St. Louis picked up Lance Lynn in free agency Monday and will now bring in another veteran starter to help round out a rotation that badly needed to be rebuilt this winter and could still use a top-tier arm. Gibson, 36, signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Orioles last offseason and went on to register a 4.73 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 157:55 K:BB in 33 starts covering 192 innings. He played his college ball at the University of Missouri, about 125 miles from Busch Stadium.
Oct 10 2023Gibson will be available out of the bullpen in Game 3 of the ALDS on Tuesday versus the Rangers, Danielle Allentuck of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson would seemingly be an option to start a potential Game 4, but the Orioles are facing elimination from the best-of-five series and will take an all-hands-on-deck approach into Game 3. The veteran right-hander went 15-9 with a 4.73 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 157:55 K:BB over 192 innings (33 starts) during the regular season. He has yet to pitch in the 2023 postseason.
Oct 1 2023Gibson did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing seven hits and one walk over five scoreless innings against the Red Sox. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was masterful at limiting damage Saturday, allowing no Red Sox players to score despite yielding seven hits. The 35-year-old has now allowed three or fewer runs in five consecutive starts, a stretch in which he owns a 2.45 ERA and a 20:9 K:BB across 29.1 innings.
Sep 24 2023Gibson (15-9) earned the win Sunday, allowing one run on five hits and one walk over seven innings against the Guardians. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson scattered six baserunners over seven strong innings, with the only damage to his line coming on an RBI groundout by Kole Calhoun in the fourth. Following a rough August that saw him allow 26 runs in 29.2 innings, Gibson has now allowed 8 runs in 24.1 September innings. He'll likely have one more chance to make a case at earning a role in the Orioles' postseason rotation with a start scheduled to take place next weekend at home against the Red Sox.
Sep 20 2023Gibson did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over 4.2 innings in a 9-5 victory over Houston. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson struggled with the long ball Tuesday, with a solo homer from Alex Bregman and a two-run shot by Kyle Tucker accounting for all three of his runs allowed on the day. Gibson's inability to keep the ball in the park has plagued him lately, having surrendered at least one home run in seven of his last eight starts. Over that stretch (47 innings), Gibson owns a 6.32 ERA, a 41:11 K:BB and 2.3 HR/9. The veteran is tentatively scheduled to make another appearance Sunday in Cleveland.
Sep 13 2023Gibson (14-9) took the loss Wednesday, allowing one run on three hits and three walks over 6.2 innings against St. Louis. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was excellent Wednesday, but Richie Palacios' solo home run in the fourth inning proved to be enough to stick him with the loss in a 1-0 defeat. Gibson's been inconsistent of late, struggling to an 8.16 ERA over his prior five starts, though he's now logged quality starts in his last two outings. Overall, the 35-year-old right-hander sports a 4.98 ERA with a 1.32 WHIP and 144:51 K:BB through 30 starts (175.1 innings) this season. Gibson's currently slated for a tough road matchup with the Astros in his next outing.
Sep 6 2023Gibson (14-8) allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three over six innings to earn the win over the Angels on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson struggled to a 7.89 ERA over 29.2 innings in August, but his September is off to a better start. He's given up nine home runs over his last six outings, accounting for nearly half of the 20 long balls he's surrendered this season. Gibson is at a 5.12 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 140:48 K:BB through 168.2 innings through 29 starts overall. The veteran right-hander is lined up for a favorable home start versus the Cardinals next week, though it's unclear if Gibson's spot in the rotation will be safe once John Means (elbow) returns from the injured list.
Aug 31 2023Gibson (13-8) took the loss Wednesday, allowing seven runs on nine hits over 4.1 innings against the White Sox while striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson went 1-2-3 through the first inning before surrendering three consecutive hits to open the second, including a two-run homer off the bat of Andrew Vaughn. The right-hander went on to allow three home runs for the second time in his last four starts while recording only two two strikeouts, marking his lowest strikeout total since July 15. Gibson has now given up at least seven runs in two of his last four outings and has allowed at least nine hits in three of his last four, running his ERA up to 7.89 in the month of August.
Aug 24 2023Gibson (13-7) earned the win Thursday, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk over eight innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After allowing 13 runs over his previous two outings (10.1 innings), Gibson rebounded to hold the Blue Jays to three runs over a season-high eight innings to earn his fourth win in his last five starts. The veteran right-hander lowered his ERA to 4.89 with a 1.32 WHIP and 135:46 K:BB across 27 starts (158.1 innings) this season. Gibson's currently in line for a home matchup with the White Sox in his next outing.
Aug 18 2023Gibson (12-7) allowed four runs on nine hits and struck out six without walking a batter over five innings to earn the win Friday over the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson wasn't great, but he managed to avoid walking a batter and also kept the ball in the yard. The Orioles' offense did the rest, carrying him to his third win in his last four starts. The right-hander has given up 17 runs over 23.1 innings in that span and now has a 4.97 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 127:45 K:BB through 150.1 innings over 26 starts this year. Gibson is projected for a home start versus the Rockies next week.
Aug 11 2023Gibson (11-7) allowed nine runs on 12 hits and two walks while striking out four over 5.1 innings to take the loss Friday versus the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson labored through the outing, throwing 57 of 89 pitches for strikes while yielding multiple homers for just the second time this season. The Mariners are now responsible for both his shortest outing and most runs given up in a start this season. The right-hander's ERA ballooned to 4.89 with a 1.33 WHIP and 121:45 K:BB through 145.1 innings over 25 starts this season. He's projected for a favorable road matchup in Oakland next week as the Orioles move to a six-man rotation.
Aug 6 2023Gibson (11-6) allowed three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out nine over seven innings to earn the win Saturday over the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson's been on a roll lately, posting four straight quality starts with two wins, a 3.24 ERA and 27 strikeouts over 25 innings in that span. The strong stretch has trimmed his ERA to 4.50 with a 1.28 WHIP and 117:43 K:BB through 140 innings across 24 starts overall. Gibson will try to keep it rolling in Seattle for his next projected start.
Jul 31 2023Gibson (10-6) yielded one run on four hits and two walks over sx innings Monday, striking out five and earning a win over Toronto. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson tossed four shutout frames before the Blue Jays finally broke through for a run in the fifth inning. He's turned in three consecutive quality starts but he'd given up at least four runs in four of five outings prior to this stretch. Gibson lowered his ERA to 4.53 with a 108:42 K:BB through 133 frames this season. He's currently expected to face the Mets at home this weekend.
Jul 25 2023Gibson did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing two runs on four hits over six innings against the Phillies. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson's now logged quality starts in three of his last four outings after struggling to a 6.84 ERA in June. The veteran right-hander held the Phillies to one run through his first five frames Tuesday before surrendering a game-tying home run to Bryce Harper in the sixth. Overall, Gibson is 9-6 this season with a 4.68 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 103:40 K:BB across 22 starts (127 innings). He's currently in line to face the Blue Jays on the road in his next outing.
Jul 20 2023Gibson did not factor in the decision against Tampa Bay on Thursday, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out eight batters over six-plus innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was headed toward a win after six one-run frames. However, he came back out for the seventh and allowed the only two batters he faced to reach base, losing his shot at a victory when both runners scored following his departure. Despite the disappointing ending, Gibson bounced back well from his previous appearance, when he gave up five runs over 5.1 innings against Miami. The veteran's right-hander's quality start Thursday was just his second over his past six outings, a span during which he's posted a 7.03 ERA and 1.59 WHIP over 32 frames.
Jul 16 2023Gibson didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 6-5 win over the Marlins, coughing up five runs on nine hits and two walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a shaky outing for the veteran right-hander, who tossed 52 of 84 pitches for strikes, but Gibson was taken off the hook for his seventh loss of the year when the O's staged a comeback in the seventh inning. Gibson has been tagged for at least four runs in four of his last five starts, posting a 7.62 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 25:11 K:BB in 26 innings over that stretch, and those struggles seem to have followed him into the second half.
Jul 9 2023Gibson (9-6) allowed two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out 11 across seven innings to earn the win Sunday over the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson had given up 18 runs over his last 19.2 innings during a four-start winless skid. He received ample run support Sunday and did his part with an excellent performance that saw him match his season high in strikeouts. He has a 4.60 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 89:36 K:BB through 109.2 innings over 19 starts this season. He's done better at keeping the ball down this year, allowing just 10 home runs so far, though he's had some struggles allowing too many baserunners.
Jul 4 2023Gibson (8-6) took the loss Tuesday, allowing four runs on three hits and four walks over six innings against the Yankees. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson showed signs of improvement despite the loss Tuesday after he allowed 11 runs over 7.2 innings in his previous two starts. The 35-year-old right-hander allowed a two-run homer to Gleyber Torres in the first inning before holding the Yankees to just two more runs over his next five frames. Gibson still sports a disappointing 4.73 ERA with a 1.38 WHIP and 78:35 K:BB across 18 starts (102.2 innings) this season. He'll be looking for his first win since June 6 in his next start, currently scheduled for this weekend in Minnesota.
Jun 29 2023Gibson did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing six runs on nine hits and one walk over 4.2 innings against the Reds. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was a mess Wednesday, allowing three hits and three runs in the opening frame while also hitting Jonathan India with a pitch. He would once again be victimized for another three runs in the second as the Reds tallied three straight hits to open the inning. The right-hander has now allowed at least five runs in back-to-back starts and has given up at least three runs in four of five starts in June. His ERA sits at 6.84 this month after maintaining a 3.86 ERA through six starts in May.
Jun 23 2023Gibson (8-5) took the loss Friday, allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks over across innings against Seattle. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander produced a scoreless opening frame but floundered in the following two innings, as he needed 86 pitches to record just nine outs. It's the fifth time this season Gibson has issued as least three walks, though he still has a 3.58 ERA and 3-2 record in those games. The 35-year-old will carry a 4.30 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 69:30 K:BB over 92 frames into his next start, which projects to come at home against red-hot Cincinnati next week.
Jun 17 2023Gibson (8-4) took the loss Saturday, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks over six innings against the Cubs. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson did a good job of mixing up his pitches Saturday and struck out five of the first eight batters he faced. His biggest mistake on the day came in the form of a hanging sinker with two outs in the third, which Nico Hoerner ripped to center field to score Mike Tauchman and Miles Mastrobuoni and put the Orioles down 2-0. The right-hander later surrendered what would be the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth, giving him his first loss since May 14. Gibson had won each of his last four decisions coming in (spanning five starts) and he's now struck out seven in two of his last three starts.
Jun 12 2023Gibson (8-3) allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out four without walking a batter in 6.1 innings to earn the win Sunday over the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson turned in a quality start, his seventh of the year, and the Orioles' offense gave him plenty of support. He's won four of his last five starts without allowing more than three runs in any of them. He's now at a 3.90 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 58:25 K:BB over 83 innings through 14 starts this season. Gibson is projected to make his next start on the road versus the Cubs this weekend.
Jun 7 2023Gibson allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven across five innings Tuesday against the Brewers. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Brewers had five batters reach base against Gibson in the opening frame, leading to their only two runs against him. Gibson was able to settle in afterward and even struck out the side in the fifth to finish his day on a strong note. His seven strikeouts were his most since he piled up 11 back on April 22 and he's now allowed two runs or less in four of his last six starts. The 35-year-old now sports a 3.87 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 54:25 K:BB over 76.2 innings and will is expected to take the mound next against the Royals over the weekend.
May 30 2023Gibson (7-3) earned the win Tuesday, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk over 5.2 innings against Cleveland. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson has now won three consecutive starts, allowing four runs over 19.2 innings in that span. The 35-year-old righty sports a 3.89 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 47:23 K:BB through seven starts (41.2 innings) this season. Gibson will look to extend his winning streak in his next outing, tentatively lined up for next week in Milwaukee.
May 20 2023Gibson (5-3) picked up the win in Friday's 6-2 victory over the Blue Jays, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander finally got some run support, as incredibly the Orioles had been shut out in each of Gibson's first three starts in May. The quality start was his fifth of the year, and he'll take a 4.27 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 41:18 K:BB through 59 innings into his next outing, which is likely to come on the road next week in Yankee Stadium.
May 14 2023Gibson (4-3) took the loss Sunday, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks over five innings during a 4-0 loss to Pittsburgh. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson struggled to find a rhythm Sunday and suffered his third straight loss. The right-hander has allowed at least four earned runs in four of his first nine starts with Baltimore and isn't striking enough batters out (36:16 K:BB over 52 innings). Gibson will look to get back on track in his next start, which is tentatively scheduled for the opener of a three-game weekend set in Toronto.
May 9 2023Gibson (4-2) took the loss Monday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over six innings during a 3-0 defeat to the Rays. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Despite notching his third quality start of the year, Gibson took his second loss, as Tampa Bay's pitching staff combined for a shutout. It was a solid bounce-back performance for the right-hander, who surrendered a season-high six runs last time out, and he currently sports a 4.40 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 31:13 K:BB through his first eight starts (47 innings) with Baltimore. His next start is tentatively scheduled for a three-game weekend set versus the Pirates.
May 3 2023Gibson (4-1) took the loss against Kansas City on Wednesday, allowing six runs on 10 hits and no walks over 6.2 innings. He did not record any strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson's outing started well, as he gave up just one run over his first five frames. The Royals tagged him for another run in the sixth, but it was the seventh when things fell apart for the veteran right-hander. Gibson gave up four hits in that frame -- including a double and a triple -- and was charged with four runs by the time the inning was over. Meanwhile, the Orioles couldn't push over any runs against five KC pitchers, leading to Gibson's first loss of the campaign. The six runs and 10 hits he allowed Wednesday were both season-worst marks.
Apr 27 2023Gibson did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks over 4.1 innings against the Tigers. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detroit had Gibson's number Thursday, tagging him for eight hits over 4.1 innings after Gibson dominated them in his last start with only two hits allowed and 11 punchouts. Gibson has been off to a strong start to 2023, owning a 4-0 record with a 3.93 ERA through six starts. However, fantasy managers should be hesitant to trust Gibson considering he has a 4.35 ERA and a 3.2 BB/9 over his last four seasons.
Apr 4 2023Gibson earned the win Tuesday, allowing two runs on six hits and zero walks over seven innings against the Rangers. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson gave up two solo homers in the game to Adolis Garcia and Nathaniel Lowe, but outside of that it was a very strong outing for the veteran right-hander. He's now 2-0 on the season, but this was a much better effort than the one he had against the Red Sox on Opening Day. Gibson is scheduled for a friendly matchup against the Athletics on Monday.
Mar 30 2023Gibson (1-0) picked up the win Thursday against Boston, allowing four earned runs off six hits and a walk while striking out three batters through five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson left the game in the sixth with an 8-2 lead and two runners on base, but Keegan Akin allowed both to cross the plate in relief. While Gibson likely has good job security in the Orioles' rotation, his pitch-to-contact approach and 5.05 ERA from last season put a ceiling on his fantasy value for 2023.
Mar 14 2023Gibson has allowed two earned runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out six over nine Grapefruit League innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson has made three appearances in spring training, and he's performing just fine. The veteran right-hander signed a one-year deal with the Orioles in December, and he should be a lock for the rotation, especially given his encouraging outings so far. He struggled to a 5.05 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 144:48 K:BB across 167.2 innings with the Phillies last season, and at 35 years old, it's tough to imagine a significant improvement in his numbers this year.
Dec 3 2022Gibson signed a one-year deal with the Orioles on Saturday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson has been eating innings at the big-league level for a full decade, but how much remains in the tank ahead of his age-35 season is unclear. His 5.05 ERA last season means he's finished above 5.00 in that category in two of the last three seasons, though he did post a 3.71 ERA in 2021 and hasn't seen a big drop in velocity. His 20.1 percent strikeout rate in 2022 was below average as usual, though allowing plenty of contact isn't quite as dangerous as it used to be in Baltimore now that the left-field fence has been pushed back. The veteran righty should have a good shot at a spot near the back of the Orioles' rotation to open the year, but his age means the bottom could fall out at any time without much warning.
Oct 1 2022Gibson (10-8) took the loss Saturday, allowing seven runs on eight hits and two walks over six innings against the Nationals. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson got himself into trouble early in this one, walking the leadoff hitter on four straight pitches in the bottom of the first before allowing an RBI single to Luis Garcia later in the inning. He would then go on to allow five straight hits with two outs in the second, including a solo shot to Luke Voit to put the Phillies in a 6-1 hole. Gibson has now allowed five or more runs in three consecutive starts, while allowing seven runs in three of his last six.
Sep 25 2022Gibson yielded five runs on seven hits and two walks over five frames against Atlanta on Sunday. He struck out nine and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Surprisingly, Gibson was in line for the victory when he left the game but Atlanta would ultimately win in extras. He's been tagged with 24 runs over his last five starts, raising his season ERA from 4.08 to 4.84 during that span. The 34-year-old righty allowed two runs in the first inning Sunday and later coughed up a two-run shot to Dansby Swanson in the fourth. Gibson is lined up to make his final start of the regular season next week in Washington.
Sep 20 2022Gibson (10-7) took the loss Tuesday against Toronto, allowing seven runs on 12 hits and a walk while striking out three in five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Toronto's lineup got to Gibson early and often, scoring runs in four of his five frames. Five of the hits against him went for extra bases and 13 of the 27 batters he faced reached safely. It's been a disastrous September for Gibson, as he's posted a 9.68 ERA, 2.15 WHIP and 14:6 K:BB in 17.2 innings across four starts and he's seen his ERA rise from 4.08 to 4.71.
Sep 14 2022Gibson (10-6) earned the win Wednesday, allowing one run on six hits with seven strikeouts over six innings against Miami. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After allowing four singles and a run in the bottom of the first inning, Gibson settled in nicely. He allowed just three hits and did not surrender a walk or a run over the next five innings to earn his 15th quality start and position himself to earn his 10th win. After allowing 11 earned runs over 6.2 innings in his last two starts, the effort Wednesday was a great sign for the veteran. He'll take a 4.45 ERA into his next start.
Sep 8 2022Gibson did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing four runs on nine hits and one walk over five innings against the Marlins. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson allowed a third-inning solo homer from Lewin Diaz followed by an RBI double and RBI single before surrendering another solo home run to Joey Wendle in the fifth. The righty has now given up 11 runs in his last two starts following a stretch of nine games with a quality 2.80 ERA over 54.2 innings. The 34-year-old has allowed five home runs over his last five outings.
Sep 3 2022Gibson (9-6) took the loss Friday, allowing seven runs on five hits and four walks over 1.2 innings in a 13-1 loss to the Giants. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a 40-pitch first inning, Gibson handed out a couple more free passes in the second before Joc Pederson cashed in with a three-run homer. In total, Gibson needed 65 pitches to record five outs. He had been on a nice run coming into Friday's game, posting a 2.41 ERA over his previous six starts, but this was a reminder of the inconsistency and downside we've seen with Gibson throughout his career.
Aug 28 2022Gibson (9-5) earned the win Saturday, allowing six hits and one walk over seven innings in a 6-0 victory over Pittsburgh. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson surrendered a double to Bligh Madris, and the remaining hits he allowed were singles. The righty has pitched six innings or more in five of his last six starts. The 34-year-old has also been racking up strikeouts with 34 over 37.1 innings during that span.
Aug 21 2022Gibson allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits and three walks over 4.1 innings against the Mets on Sunday. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson wasn't very efficient in Philadelphia's loss on Sunday, needing 105 pitches to record just 13 outs. Two runs scored against him on an error in the second inning before he allowed another run in each of the third and fourth frames. Gibson has been charged with fewer than four earned runs in seven of his last eight starts, posting a 3.21 ERA during that span. The veteran righty is lined up to face the Pirates at home next week.
Aug 16 2022Gibson (8-5) earned the victory Tuesday in Cincinnati, striking out 11 in six innings while allowing three runs on six hits. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson struck out only 11 batters in his previous four starts combined, spanning 24.1 innings, but managed to punch out that many in just six innings Tuesday. Eleven of the 23 batters he faced were retired on strikes. The last time he struck out that many batters in a game was May 8, 2019, as a member of the Twins. He's recorded a quality start in six of his last seven outings, posting a 3.12 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 32:9 K:BB in 43.1 innings in that span. His next start will likely be early next week against Cincinnati.
Aug 11 2022Gibson (7-5) allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out three across six innings to take the loss Thursday against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson allowed only one run through 5.2 innings, though he fell apart late in the outing after surrendering two singles and a double -- he also threw a wild pitch -- to take his fifth loss of the season. The effort marked his third consecutive quality start, though he's also allowed five or more earned runs in three of his last eight starts. Gibson now owns a 4.29 ERA and 91:34 K:BB across 121.2 frames on the campaign.
Aug 6 2022Gibson (7-4) picked up the win Friday, allowing one run on two hits and a walk over eight innings in a 7-2 victory over the Nationals. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander took a perfect game into the seventh inning, but he opened the frame by plunking Victor Robles before Luis Garcia slapped a single to left field. Gibson still came away with his fourth quality start in his last five trips to the mound, a stretch during which he's posted a sharp 2.87 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 18:7 K:BB through 31.1 innings.
Aug 4 2022Gibson (personal) was activated from the bereavement list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander missed his scheduled turn through the rotation Tuesday while on the bereavement list due to a death in his family, but he's now rejoined the team ahead of Thursday's series opener versus the Nationals. Gibson is scheduled to take the mound Friday, while trade-acquisition Noah Syndergaard starts Thursday's contest.
Aug 3 2022The Phillies plan to reinstate Gibson (personal) from the bereavement list in advance of his scheduled start Friday against the Nationals in Philadelphia, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson missed out on his scheduled start Tuesday in Atlanta due to a death in his family, prompting the Phillies to go with a bullpen day in what ended up being a 13-1 loss. The veteran righty is on track to return to Philadelphia this weekend and will start the second contest of the four-game set, with trade-deadline pickup Noah Syndergaard getting the ball in Thursday's series opener.
Jul 30 2022Gibson (personal) won't start Tuesday against Atlanta, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was placed on the bereavement list Saturday following the death of his grandmother, and he'll be away from the team longer than the minimum amount of time. The Phillies will have a bullpen game Tuesday, while it seems likely that Gibson will start at some point during the team's series against the Nationals next weekend.
Jul 27 2022Gibson (6-4) allowed two earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four across six innings to earn the win Wednesday against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson served up a two-run homer to Matt Olson in the sixth inning to spoil a potential scoreless appearance. He otherwise dominated the Atlanta lineup, generating 13 of his outs via groundout or strikeout. Gibson has turned in three quality starts in his last four outings, but he has surrendered five or more earned runs in three of his last six starts. He's been similarly inconsistent throughout the season, which has led to a 4.60 ERA with an 84:31 K:BB across 107.2 innings.
Jul 23 2022Gibson (5-4) allowed six runs on six hits and three walks over 4.1 innings Friday. He failed to record a strikeout while taking a loss against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson turned in three shutout frames before Willson Contreras led off the fourth inning with a solo homer. The Cubs then piled on six runs in the fifth with five of them being charged to Gibson. It was the third time in his last five starts that he gave up at least five runs, raising his season ERA from 4.06 to 4.69 during that span. The veteran righty will carry an 80:29 K:BB into his projected start at home against Atlanta next week.
Jul 16 2022Gibson (5-3) picked up the win Friday, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over six innings in a 2-1 victory over the Marlins. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miami pushed across a run in the second inning on a Bryan De La Cruz sacrifice fly, but Gibson locked things down the rest of the way and let only one other runner even reach second base. It was the second straight quality start for the right-hander and his ninth of the year, and Gibson will carry a 4.35 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 80:26 K:BB through 97.1 innings into his next outing.
Jul 14 2022Gibson (personal) was reinstated from the restricted list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was unable to travel with the Phillies for their two-game series against Toronto. He didn't miss a start as a result, and he is in line to take the mound Friday against the Marlins.
Jul 12 2022Gibson (personal) was placed on the restricted list ahead of Tuesday's series opener against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander is unable to enter Canada for the two-game series due to his vaccination status. Gibson last pitched Saturday against the Cardinals, so the move to the restricted list won't affect his turn through the rotation. He tentatively lines up to pitch Friday in Miami.
Jul 9 2022Gibson allowed two hits and no walks while striking out five across seven scoreless innings Saturday against the Cardinals. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson entered Saturday's start having allowed 11 earned runs in the span of 6.2 innings across his previous two starts. However, he shut down the Cardinals' offense and tallied 16 swinging strikes across 84 total pitches. Gibson now owns a 4.53 ERA and a 75:25 K:BB across 91.1 frames on the campaign.
Jul 3 2022Gibson did not factor into the decision against the Cardinals on Saturday, allowing six runs on seven hits while striking out two and walking two over four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson threw 53 of 84 pitches for strikes across four frames, striking out just two batters in the process. This six-run game comes after he allowed five earned runs in 2.2 innings in his last appearance. The righty allowed four home runs in a row to Cardinals batters in the first inning, one of which was a two-run homer, and had another run attributed to him after Corey Knebel allowed a bases-loaded walk in relief. Gibson will take a 4.91 ERA into his next appearance.
Jun 26 2022Gibson allowed five runs on four hits, three walks and two hit-by-pitches while striking out in 2.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Padres on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson threw only 34 of his 61 pitches for strikes in a wild and ineffective start that saw the Phillies in an early hole. They were able to get out of trouble with strong work from the bullpen, including long reliever Nick Nelson's 3.1 perfect innings, and a surge in offense in the latter half of the game. Gibson's been generally solid as a back-end starter, posting a 4.48 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 68:23 K:BB across 80.1 innings this year, so it appears this was just a hiccup for the veteran right-hander in his shortest outing of 2022. He'll look to get back on track next weekend in a home start versus the Cardinals.
Jun 21 2022Gibson (4-3) took the loss Tuesday in Texas, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out four in 6.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson faced the minimum through the first four innings thanks to two double-play groundballs. In the fifth, he gave up back-to-back homers to Nathaniel Lowe and Jonah Heim and, one inning later he gave up another run. It marked the second straight start and fourth time in his last nine in which didn't hand out a single free pass.
Jun 16 2022Gibson didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Marlins, allowing one run on seven hits over eight innings. He struck out six without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander put together one of his most impressive performances of the year, tossing an efficient 89 pitches (63 strikes), but Gibson left the mound on the hook for his third loss until Garrett Stubbs launched a walkoff homer in the ninth inning. Gibson had to settle for his second straight quality start and sixth of the season in 13 outings, leaving him with a 4.04 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 62:20 K:BB through 71 innings.
Jun 11 2022Gibson (4-2) went six innings in Friday's win against Arizona, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out four and walking three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson bounced back after a three-inning, five-run outing against the Angels last weekend with a quality start against the Diamondbacks. He threw 64 of 100 pitches for strikes. The victory was his first since May 8.
Jun 5 2022Gibson allowed five runs on six hits and two walks over 3.1 innings in Sunday's win over the Angels. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson got off to a good start Sunday, yielding just two baserunners through three shutout innings before the wheels fell off in the fourth. The first five batters of the fourth frame reached base against Gibson and he gave up five runs while finally being lifted from the contest. The 6-foot-6 righty had allowed two or fewer runs in six of his previous seven contests entering Sunday. Gibson will carry a 4.40 ERA into his projected home start against Arizona next week.
May 30 2022Gibson pitched six innings, surrendering two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out four in Monday's loss to the Giants. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson cruised through five scoreless innings before Wilmer Flores took him deep for a two-run shot in the top of the sixth frame, tying the game at 2-2. The three hits given up were his lowest in five starts and he has now rattled off three strong starts since surrendering six runs over 3.2 innings against the Dodgers on May 13. Over his last three outings, Gibson has posted a 3.24 ERA, lowering his season-long figure to 3.83 over 54 frames in 10 starts.
May 26 2022Gibson will no longer start during the Phillies' weekend series against the Mets, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was originally slated to start Sunday, but Bailey Falter will start Friday and push the rotation back a day. As a result, Gibson lines up to start Monday against the Giants, though that has not been confirmed by the team. Zach Eflin will start Saturday, with Zack Wheeler following in the series finale.
May 25 2022Gibson didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 6-5 loss to Atlanta, giving up two runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander got lifted after 106 pitches (67 strikes) with the Phillies down by a run, but they quickly got Gibson off the hook for his third loss of the year. He'll take a 3.94 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 45:14 K:BB through 48 innings into his next outing, when he'll be looking for his first win since May 8 after starting off with three victories in his first six outings of the season.
May 19 2022Gibson (3-2) took the loss after allowing two runs on eight hits across 5.2 innings during Thursday's 2-0 loss to the Padres. He recorded seven strikeouts and zero walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson clearly didn't have his best stuff, but he was able to minimize the damage for the most part. Regardless, the Padres were still able to strike for two runs in the fourth after leading off the inning with three straight singles, which ended up being the difference in the game. Gibson's seven strikeouts were his highest since recording 10 during his first start of the campaign and certainly a bounce back from his season-low one in his last appearance. His next start is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday's matchup in Atlanta.
May 13 2022Gibson didn't factor into the decision during Friday's 12-10 victory over the Dodgers, allowing six runs on eight hits and one walk with one strikeout in 3.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson retired the first six Dodgers in order but fell apart thereafter, surrendering five runs on five hits and a walk in the third and an additional run in the fourth before being pulled. After recording 16 whiffs in his first two turns, the 34-year-old now has just 14 in the five ensuing starts with a 4.10 ERA and 1.21 WHIP on the season. He's tentatively scheduled to square off against San Diego on Wednesday for his next start.
May 8 2022Gibson (3-1) earned the win in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader versus the Mets after giving up two runs on six hits with three strikeouts and zero walks across six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander generated only four swinging strikes but still managed to outduel Max Scherzer in Sunday's matinee. Gibson issued five walks his last time out and walked multiple batters in each of his previous four starts, so it was encouraging to see he gave out no free passes. He has a 2.94 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 29:12 K:BB over 33.2 innings this season and projects to pitch on the road against the Dodgers next weekend.
May 7 2022Gibson and the Phillies won't play Saturday against the Mets after the game was postponed due to inclement weather. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was initially slated to start Friday before the game was called off, and he'll have to wait at least one more day before taking the mound. Saturday's matchup will be made up as part of a doubleheader Sunday, and the right-hander will likely start in one of those two games.
May 6 2022Gibson and the Phillies won't play Friday against the Mets after the game was postponed due to inclement weather. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader in August. The Phillies will adjust to the cancellation simply by pushing their starters back by a day, so Gibson will take the mound Saturday. Over his last three starts, he's posted a 2.81 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 16 innings.
Apr 30 2022Gibson didn't factor into the decision during Saturday's 4-1 win against the Mets, permitting an unearned run on two hits and five walks with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson dealt with some traffic on the bases thanks to a season-high five walks but prevented New York from crossing the plate until his own fifth inning error brought home a run and prompted his removal. The 34-year-old has been adequate in four starts since firing seven scoreless frames with 10 strikeouts in his first start, now possessing a 2.93 ERA and 1.08 WHIP through 27.2 innings. He's currently slated to face New York again sometime next weekend.
Apr 25 2022Gibson (2-1) yielded two runs on three hits and two walks over 5.2 innings Monday, striking out four and earning a win over the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was taken deep twice in Monday's win, with Connor Joe and Randal Grichuk hitting solo shots in the first and second innings, respectively. The veteran righty then retired nine straight Rockies and didn't face much of a threat for the rest of the outing. He tossed 94 pitches (59 strikes) and forced 17 whiffs despite recording only four punchouts. Gibson will carry a 3.47 ERA into his projected road matchup with the Mets this weekend.
Apr 19 2022Gibson allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three in six innings in a 6-5 loss Tuesday in Colorado. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All three runs against Gibson came in the fourth inning when he allowed four singles and a walk. He scattered two hits and a walk in his other five innings of work and left with a 4-3 lead. After striking out 16 over his first two outings, the 2021 All-Star managed just three strikeouts in Tuesday's start. With just 7.2 K/9 in his career, the righty's 9.7 K/9 is likely to come down as the season progresses. He's scheduled to face off against the Rockies again Sunday at home.
Apr 14 2022Gibson (1-1) allowed four earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out six across 4.2 innings to take the loss Thursday against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson shut out the Phillies through the first three innings. However, he allowed three extra-base hits in the fourth frame -- including a solo home run to Garrett Cooper -- and walked two batters in the fifth to account for his four earned runs. In contrast to his first start of the campaign, Gibson labored mightily by requiring 91 pitches to record 14 outs. He'll face a challenge in his next outing as well, which is currently projected to come Tuesday at Colorado.
Apr 9 2022Gibson (1-0) earned the win over Oakland on Saturday, hurling seven scoreless innings during which he allowed two hits and no walks while striking out 10. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson put together one of the most impressive pitching performances thus far during the opening weekend of the 2022 campaign, inducing 17 swinging strikes en route to the fourth double-digit strikeout performance of his career. The veteran hurler allowed only two harmless singles and didn't walk a batter, needing just 82 pitches to make it through seven frames. Gibson is expected to have another favorable matchup in his second start of the campaign, which is slated to take place on the road against Miami next week.
Oct 1 2021Gibson (10-9) was tagged with the loss Thursday against Atlanta after allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits and two walks while fanning eight across 4.1 innings. He also hit a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson plunked an opposing batter for the second straight game and extended his struggles, as he has now allowed three or more earned runs in six straight outings. The strikeout numbers have been decent of late with an 11.0 K/9 in that span, but that's about the only positive for him since he owns a 7.31 ERA through six September starts.
Sep 24 2021Gibson allowed four runs on three hits, two walks and a hit batter with six strikeouts in six innings, taking a no-decision versus Pittsburgh on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While the right-hander wasn't that great on the mound, he helped his own cause by opening the scoring with a solo home run in the third inning. Gibson now has a 3.60 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 147:62 K:BB across 177.2 innings between Philadelphia and Texas this year, although he's had significantly more trouble in his 11 games as a Phillie. His last start of the regular season is tentatively set for next week in Atlanta, although he shouldn't be expected to mimic a Shohei Ohtani-like skill set again.
Sep 19 2021Gibson (10-8) took the loss in Sunday's 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Mets, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk with nine strikeouts in 6.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was rolling early before surrendering two runs in the fifth and one in the seventh to ultimately fall in line for the loss. The defeat is Gibson's third in his last four starts though Sunday's outing was easily his best of the bunch. The 33-year-old lines up to face the Pirates on Friday in his next start.
Sep 14 2021Gibson (10-7) took the loss against the Cubs on Tuesday, allowing four runs on five hits and no walks while striking out seven over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran looked like he could be headed for a special night through four frames, as he retired the first 12 batters he faced, including seven by strikeout. Things took a drastic turn in the fifth, however, as Chicago touched Gibson up for five hits -- including two homers -- and crossed the plate four times. The disappointing frame resulted in the right-hander's second loss in his past three appearances and extended his streak of outings without a quality start to three. Gibson will look to get back on track the next time he takes the mound, which is currently slated to be Sunday in New York against the Mets.
Sep 8 2021Gibson pitched 4.2 innings surrendering three runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out five in Wednesday's loss to Milwaukee. He did not factor into the game's decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 33-year-old was not effective in this one allowing eleven baserunners. He was lucky to limit the damage to only three runs, giving up two runs in the first inning and another in the second. It was his second consecutive ineffective outing after he allowed eight runs Friday against the Phillies. He'll look to rebound in his next projected start Tuesday versus the Cubs.
Sep 3 2021Gibson (10-6) allowed eight runs on eight hits and two walks over 5.1 innings Friday, striking out four and taking a loss against Miami. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Through five frames, the only damage against Gibson was a three-run homer by Jesus Sanchez in the first inning. The Marlins then erupted for seven runs in the sixth, with five of those being charged to the 33-year-old. His ERA jumped from 2.94 to 3.30 through 155.1 innings this season. It was just his second time in seven starts with the Phillies that he allowed more than three runs. Gibson is lined up to face the Brewers on the road next week.
Aug 29 2021Gibson (10-5) picked up the win in Saturday's 7-0 victory over the Diamondbacks, allowing three hits over six scoreless innings. He struck out three without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander fired 66 of 99 pitches for strikes in his best outing yet since joining the Phillies. Gibson has been rock solid in August, and he's 5-for-5 in turning starts into quality starts -- his one bad outing this month came in relief. On the season, he sports a career-best 2.94 ERA and 1.18 WHIP through 150 innings, albeit with a less impressive 116:53 K:BB.
Aug 22 2021Gibson (9-5) allowed one earned run on six hits and one walk while striking out three across eight innings, earning the win over the Padres on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson allowed a pair of doubles to start the game, leading to a run in the first inning. However, he proceeded to post seven straight scoreless innings, pitching eight innings for the third time this season. The only downfall is that he struck out just three batters. The 33-year-old has a 3.77 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with 19 strikeouts in 31 innings since joining the Phillies. He has five quality starts in his last six outings.
Aug 18 2021Gibson (8-5) was tagged with the loss Tuesday against the Diamondbacks after allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks across six innings, fanning five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson has dropped his last two starts and five of his last seven outings, but he hasn't been pitching as bad as a 2-5 record in that span would indicate. In fact, he has given up three or fewer runs in four of his last five appearances while posting four quality starts during that span. Aside from a woeful start against the Dodgers earlier this month, in which he gave up six runs across 4.1 innings, he has been a steady presence in the rotation since being acquired before the deadline. He owns a 4.70 ERA in four starts with the Phillies.
Aug 12 2021Gibson (8-4) took the loss Wednesday, coughing up six runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks over 4.1 innings as the Phillies fell 8-2 to the Dodgers. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Originally scheduled to get the start Wednesday, Gibson instead found himself used as a primary pitcher when manager Joe Girardi decided to hold him back due to the threat of bad weather, and he didn't enter the contest until after a 57-minute rain delay prior to the third inning. The ploy backfired when the right-hander gave up the first runs of the game in the top of the fourth, putting the Phillies in a hole they couldn't climb out of. Gibson has been a steadying force on the staff since being picked up at the trade deadline, posting a 3.18 ERA over his first three outings for Philly, but his 1.41 WHIP and 11:9 K:BB through 17 innings are worrying.
Aug 11 2021Gibson will take the mound to open the third inning Wednesday as the Dodgers and Phillies come out of a weather delay, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was a late scratch as Wednesday's starter, but it was simply a move from manager Joe Girardi to combat potential inclement weather, which ended up delaying the contest after two innings amid a scoreless tie.
Aug 7 2021Gibson (8-3) earned the win Friday against the Phillies after tossing six innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and four walks while fanning three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson's command wasn't entirely sharp in this one, as the four walks represent his second-worst mark of the season in that category, but that seems to be an issue with him of late. Through his last three starts, the veteran right-hander has posted a 12:14 K:BB across 18.2 innings. However, he still holds a 2.41 ERA in that span after allowing not more than two earned runs in each of those contests.
Aug 2 2021Gibson (7-3) earned the win Sunday against the Pirates after tossing 6.2 innings of two-run ball, allowing five hits and two walks while fanning five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was composed on the mound and completed a 113-pitch outing barely unscathed, as he cruised his way to a second straight quality start. The last two outings have been somewhat of a bounce-back stretch for the veteran, however, who posted two straight awful outings against the Tigers in between the All-Star break. Gibson now owns a 5.46 ERA across five outings since the beginning of July, but he seems to be moving in the right direction.
Jul 31 2021Phillies manager Joe Girardi said it's "very possible" that Gibson starts Sunday's series finale in Pittsburgh, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Meanwhile, MLB.com also lists Gibson as the Phillies' probable pitcher for Sunday, so fantasy managers can probably count on him making his team debut this weekend. After becoming a first-time All-Star on the strength of an excellent first half with the Rangers, Gibson faltered in his final two starts before being traded Friday, working 11 innings between those outings while giving up 11 runs (10 earned) on 14 hits and 10 walks. The Phillies will likely need Gibson to rediscover his first-half form if they hope to chase down the Mets for the National League East crown.
Jul 30 2021Gibson was traded from the Rangers to the Phillies along with Ian Kennedy for an undisclosed package Friday, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson is in the midst of a career year, sitting with a 2.87 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 94 strikeouts in 113 innings (19 starts). He was slated to start Saturday, so it's possible he slots right into the Phillies' rotation this weekend in Pittsburgh, perhaps Sunday in place of Spencer Howard.
Jul 25 2021Gibson (6-3) suffered the loss against Houston on Saturday, pitching six innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and eight walks while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Remarkably, Gibson managed to notch his 13th quality start of the campaign despite struggling mightily with his control throughout the contest. The right-hander threw only 48 of 104 pitches for strikes, hit one batter and more than doubled his single-game season-high mark with eight free passes. Houston took advantage of Gibson's wildness for three runs across the first three innings but was unable to push across any additional scores in the following three frames. The veteran hurler has lost each of his past three decisions, struggling to a 7.79 ERA and 1.96 WHIP over that stretch. He'll try to get back on track next weekend, when he is projected to make his next start at home versus Seattle.
Jul 19 2021Gibson (6-2) took the loss after allowing eight runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out two across five innings Monday against Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson made it through the first two innings of his outing unscathed, but he surrendered two runs in the third, four in the fifth and two in the sixth before being removed. He's been knocked around over his last two starts, giving up 13 runs across 11.1 innings. Despite this, he's posted a 2.86 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and a 90:33 K:BB across 107 frames in 2021.
Jul 8 2021Gibson (6-1) was tagged with the loss Wednesday against the Tigers after allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks while fanning seven across 6.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson dropped a game for the first time this season, and despite the fact that he went into the seventh inning, this could be qualified as one of his worst outings of the campaign. He gave up a season-high eight hits and also tied a season-worst mark in earned runs with five, which is the first time that's occurred since his first start of the year. The 33-year-old now heads into the All-Star break sporting an excellent 2.29 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP across 102 innings.
Jul 3 2021Gibson allowed one run on five hits and three walks while striking out seven over 5.2 innings in a no-decision against Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson wasn't at his best, but he scattered baserunners and left after 110 pitches with Texas ahead, 3-1, one out shy of his 13th quality start. The lone blemish was Jake Fraley's fifth-inning home run, the seventh long ball allowed over 95.2 innings (0.7 HR/9). Gibson brings a 1.98 ERA into his next start, which lines up to be Wednesday at home against Detroit.
Jun 26 2021Gibson (6-0) earned the win Saturday against the Royals after tossing seven scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk while fanning 10. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson remains undefeated but delivered his best outing of the season thus far, striking out a season-high mark of 10 while posting his fourth scoreless outing of the campaign. In fact, the veteran hurler has given two or fewer runs in each of his last eight appearances, posting a 1.68 ERA in that span. He's expected to make his next start on the road against the Mariners next week.
Jun 21 2021Gibson (5-0) gave up two runs on five hits and three walks over 5.1 innings Monday, striking out three and earning a win over Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It wasn't Gibson's sharpest outing but he managed to pick up his second win of the month, largely due to his offense's five-run outburst in the first inning. He held Oakland off the board until coughing up a solo shot to Sean Murphy in the fifth. It was Gibson's seventh straight start throwing at least five innings and allowing two or fewer runs, lowering his season ERA to 2.17. The 33-year-old is projected to face the Royals at home this weekend.
Jun 16 2021Gibson allowed one run on seven hits and one walk while striking out three over six innings and did not factor into the decision in a 6-3 extra-inning loss to Houston on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson quelled the Astros' powerful lineup through five shutout innings before getting nicked for a run in the sixth. He left with a 2-1 lead and was one strike away from his fifth win of the season, but reliever Josh Sborz blew the save in the ninth. Gibson has one win and six no-decisions over his last seven starts, posting a 2.03 ERA over 44.1 innings during that stretch. The right-hander is expected to kick off a series against Oakland on Monday.
Jun 12 2021Gibson's next start has been moved up a day, and he'll kick off the series against Houston on Tuesday, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The schedule originally had Jordan Lyles throwing Tuesday followed by Gibson, but the two hurlers will switch. Gibson, who last pitched Wednesday, will be throwing on five days rest, while Lyles will pitch on seven days rest.
Jun 9 2021Gibson allowed two runs on four hits, striking out five and walking two over six innings in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Giants. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The righty has now achieved a quality start in 10 of his 12 starts this season, and has not yielded more than three runs in any outing since his opening day debacle. Gibson's 2.13 ERA, slightly inflated by Wednesday's performance, remains the lowest among qualified American League starters. With two off-days upcoming for the Rangers, Gibson is scheduled to start next Wednesday in Houston.
Jun 6 2021Gibson will not pitch against the Dodgers in Los Angeles next weekend, Sam Blum of the Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rangers want to avoid having Gibson, who is coming off a groin injury, swinging the bat and potentially running the bases. As such, his next start will come after the weekend series in Los Angeles, which likely pushes him until the following Tuesday at Houston.
Jun 5 2021Gibson (4-0) earned the win Friday, giving up five hits while striking out five without walking a batter over 5.1 scoreless innings against Tampa Bay. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was activated off the injured list Friday and was on a pitch limit, per Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. The right-hander threw 73 pitches, which is a bit more than the trainers recommended. The Rangers' ace lines up to pitch next Friday, kicking off a road trip against the Dodgers.
Jun 4 2021Gibson (groin) was activated off the injured list as expected ahead of his scheduled start Friday against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson wound up missing two weeks with a strained right groin. He was having a strong season prior to the injury, cruising to a 2.24 ERA and 1.01 WHIP through 10 starts, though it took a .234 BABIP to get him there. His 20.1 percent strikeout rate is above his career average (18.2 percent) but remains well below the league-average mark of 24.1 percent. Wes Benjamin was optioned in a corresponding move.
May 29 2021Gibson (groin) is expected to be activated off the injured list following the Colorado series which ends Thursday, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: If Gibson returns after the Colorado series, it means he'd miss the minimum amount of time and not require a rehab stint. Gibson has a 2.24 ERA and 1.01 WHIP over 60.1 innings.
May 25 2021Gibson was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a right groin strain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The righty gave no indication that he was hurt in his six-inning, one-run outing Friday against the Astros, so it's not entirely clear whether he suffered the injury during the game. Gibson has logged a ton of innings this season, going at least six innings in all but one of his 10 starts. Pitchers Demarcus Evans and Wes Benjamin were recalled Tuesday to fill the spots of Gibson and Hunter Wood (elbow), who also went to the injured list.
May 21 2021Gibson yielded one run on four hits and two walks over six innings in Friday's win over Houston. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Aside from an Aledmys Diaz RBI groundout in the second inning, Gibson kept the Astros pretty quiet Friday. He would've improved to 4-0 if the Rangers' bullpen didn't meltdown in the eighth and allow Houston to force extras. Still, he lowered his season ERA to a terrific 2.24 with a 48:19 K:BB through 60.1 innings. Gibson is projected to face Seattle on the road next week.
May 16 2021Gibson allowed two runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts over seven innings versus Houston on Saturday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson left with the game tied at 2-2, but reliever Joely Rodriguez gave up four runs in the eighth inning. The 33-year-old Gibson has been on quite a roll lately with eight straight quality starts, but he's only earned the win in three of them. The right-hander has a 2.32 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 44:17 K:BB across 54.1 innings. His next start is expected to be during next weekend's home series versus Houston.
May 10 2021Gibson allowed one run on four hits and two walks over six innings in Monday's loss to the Giants. He struck out six and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The only damage against Gibson came on a fourth-inning solo homer by Brandon Belt. After his horrid first outing of the season, the 32-year-old has turned in seven consecutive quality starts, lowering his season to 2.28 in the process. He's lined up to take the mound in Houston this weekend.
May 4 2021Gibson didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against the Twins. He gave up three runs on three hits and two walks while fanning eight across eight innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson gave up five runs and couldn't get out of the first inning in his season debut, but he has looked dominant since then -- he has allowed just six earned runs across his last 41 innings, good for a blistering 1.32 ERA in that span. The veteran right-hander will try to extend his dominant stretch of form when he takes the ball next week on the road against the Giants.
Apr 29 2021Gibson (3-0) won Thursday's 4-1 contest against Boston, going six innings and allowing one run on three hits and three walks with four punch outs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was able to stay out of trouble yet again as the only real damage came on a sixth-inning Rafael Devers RBI double. After a disastrous first outing, Gibson has allowed only three runs in 33 innings across his five ensuing starts.
Apr 24 2021Gibson didn't factor into the decision Saturday against the White Sox. He gave up one run on six hits and two walks while fanning five across six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson had a woeful start to the season since he couldn't escape the first inning in Opening Day, but he has bounced back admirably and hasn't allowed more than one earned run in each of his subsequent four starts -- with three scoreless outings in that stretch. He's on a run of four straight quality starts and is slated to take the ball next week during a four-game series against the Red Sox.
Apr 18 2021Gibson allowed only four hits over eight shutout innings and struck out six in a no-decision versus the Orioles on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson has allowed just two runs (one earned) over his last 21 innings spanning three starts. Unfortunately for Gibson, the Rangers' bats couldn't muster any runs off Orioles starter John Means. The 33-year-old Gibson has a 2.53 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 18:6 K:BB across 21.1 innings this season, and he's been difficult to hit outside of a rough season opener. The right-hander is scheduled to make his next start Saturday versus the White Sox.
Apr 13 2021Gibson (2-0) earned the win Tuesday after holding the Rays to a pair of runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out three across seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Following an abysmal first start to the season, Gibson has looked sharp over his last two outings, including a solid performance against the Rays. After the 33-year-old plunked a batter in the first inning, he followed suit by allowing an RBI double to Joey Wendle. A fielding error by Nick Solak allowed one more (unearned) run to score, but that would be the last blemish of the night under Gibson's watch. It was relatively smooth sailing the rest of the way for the right-hander, who has now allowed one earned run over his last 13 innings. He'll look to keep things rolling at home Sunday against the Orioles.
Apr 7 2021Gibson (1-0) earned the win over the Blue Jays on Wednesday with six shutout innings. He allowed six hits and a walk while striking out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson had a nightmarish first start of the season in Kansas City, as he allowed five runs on four hits and three walks over one-third of an inning. The 33-year-old right-hander found the other extreme Wednesday, successfully quieting the Blue Jays' bats. There's still plenty of reasons to question Gibson's consistency -- he posted a 5.35 ERA in 2020. His next turn on the mound is expected to be Tuesday in Tampa Bay.
Mar 18 2021Gibson hit a batter and struck out six over four scoreless innings in Wednesday's spring game against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Gibson hit Tim Locastro with a pitch to start the game, he didn't allow another baserunner other than an error by third baseman Rougned Odor. Gibson was pleased with his cutter, which he added to his arsenal during the offseason, per Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. It helped produce seven groundouts (zero flyouts). "I'm not throwing cutters just to throw them anymore," he said. "I'm using them when it makes sense to against a hitter." The Rangers' new-minted Opening Day starter looked in fine form Wednesday, but his long track record of regular-season mediocrity means fantasy managers should take a wait-and-see approach.
Mar 16 2021Gibson will start on Opening Day against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This has more to do with the state of the Rangers' roster than the talent of Gibson, as he would be more of a No. 3 or No. 4 starter on most teams. He reportedly added a cutter after utilizing five different pitches last season, so Gibson will enter 2021 with one of the deeper repertoires in the game. However, he logged a 5.35 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 58 strikeouts in 67.1 innings in 2020.
Mar 1 2021Gibson added a cutter over the offseason, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson already had a rather full repertoire, throwing four pitches (a four-seam fastball, sinker, changeup and slider) all at least 14 percent of the time last year while also working in the occasional curveball. He might need a new weapon to stay relevant heading into his age-33 season, as he's coming off a year in which he struggled to a 5.35 ERA, his worst mark since his debut back in 2013. Of course, it's far too soon to say whether or not the cutter will actually make him a better pitcher, but it could provide a reason to believe in him should he look like a better pitcher in his first few starts.
Feb 27 2021Gibson will start Monday's spring game against San Francisco, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rangers kick off the Cactus League on Sunday when swingman Wes Benjamin starts. Gibson is the first established starter scheduled to throw, and he's the putative Opening Day starter for Texas.
Feb 20 2021Gibson is the likely Opening Day starter for Texas, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson is an unlikely No. 1 starter, particularly after posting a 5.35 ERA in 2020. He's never thrown more than 200 innings in any season and averaged 173 innings over six seasons as a full-time starter for the Twins.
Sep 27 2020Gibson tossed six scoreless innings Saturday against the Astros while allowing six hits and one walk. He struck out four and did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson dueled with Astros starter Lance McCullers on Saturday as both pitched several innings of scoreless baseball. It was the 32-year-old's second time in this month shutting out the Astros across six or more innings; he pitched a complete-game masterpiece against Houston back on Sept. 16. As a whole, 2020 was an up-and-down campaign for Gibson as he finished with a 5.35 ERA and 58:30 K:BB across 67.1 innings.
Sep 21 2020Gibson (2-6) took the loss Monday against the Angels, giving up seven runs on five hits and four walks while striking out four over four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson had a rough time in this one, surrendering one run in the second and six in the fourth, including a grand slam. The 32-year-old now sits with a 5.87 ERA and 1.57 WHIP to go with a 54:29 K:BB across 61.1 frames in 2020.
Sep 16 2020Gibson (2-5) earned the win against the Astros on Wednesday after firing nine scoreless innings. He struck out nine while allowing four hits and three walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson's dominant performance stumped the Astros and rewarded him with his first career shutout across 198 games. The right-hander threw 74 of 114 pitches for strikes and whiffed a season-high tying nine batters en route to his first complete game since 2016 against the Braves. The brilliant outing came as a surprise after Gibson had given up 10 hits on five runs during his last start against the Angels. Gibson will carry a 5.18 ERA and 1.52 WHIP into a Monday matchup at Angel Stadium.
Sep 10 2020Gibson (1-5) took the loss in Thursday's game against the Angels, allowing five runs on 10 hits and three walks across 5.2 innings. He fanned three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson's outing got off to a rough start with the right-hander allowing a three-run homer to Jared Walsh in the first. Mike Trout added a solo shot in the fifth before Andrelton Simmons chased the 32-year-old with a sixth-inning RBI double. Gibson will look to pick up his first win since Aug. 15 when he takes the ball Tuesday in Houston.
Sep 5 2020Gibson did not factor in the decision against Seattle on Saturday, pitching 4.2 innings and allowing two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Given Gibson's high pitch count -- he needed 104 pitches to record 14 outs -- the end result (two earned runs and a no-decision) can be considered a small victory. The right-hander's early exit can largely be attributed to a lack of command as 47 of his 104 pitches went for balls and one of the runs he allowed came across on a bases-loaded walk in the third inning. Free passes have been an issue for Gibson of late -- he has issued 12 walks in 21 innings over his last four starts, during which he has also given up 19 earned runs. The veteran will carry a 5.91 ERA into his next start, which will come Thursday at home against the Angels.
Aug 30 2020Gibson (1-4) allowed five earned runs on five hits and four walks while striking out eight across five innings to take the loss Sunday against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson surrendered a home run in each of the first three innings and allowed another run to cross the plate in the fourth inning. He finally managed to turn in a scoreless fifth frame, but the damage was already done. He's now allowed 17 earned runs across his last 16.1 innings -- spanning three outings -- which has inflated his ERA to 6.16 for the campaign. He'll look to turn things around his next turn through the rotation, currently projected to come Saturday at Seattle.
Aug 25 2020Gibson (1-3) gave up seven runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six over 6.1 innings in a loss to the Athletics on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson allowed a pair of two-run homers in the contest, to Matt Olson in the fourth inning and Marcus Semien in the fifth. Gibson then got into trouble early in the seventh, and reliever Ian Gibaut allowed two inherited runners to score. The 32-year-old Gibson saw his ERA inflate to 5.73 with a 1.48 WHIP and 26 strikeouts in 33 innings this season. Wins are hard to come by for any Rangers pitcher this season -- the right-hander will look for his second of the year in a tough home matchup with the Dodgers on Sunday.
Aug 20 2020Gibson took a no-decision during Thursday's loss to the Padres, surrendering five runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three across five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his first career start at Petco Park and first start against the Padres since 2017, Gibson turned in a shaky outing against a volatile lineup. The bulk of his damage came in the fifth inning, when for the fourth night in a row, the Padres cranked a grand slam. This time it was Eric Hosmer who inflicted the damage. Gibson also gave up an RBI single to Wil Myers in the first frame. Across five starts this season, the right-hander owns a 4.73 ERA and 1.54 WHIP. He'll battle Oakland on Tuesday.
Aug 15 2020Gibson (1-2) allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk with two strikeouts in 6.1 innings, earning the win Saturday versus the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson escaped Coors Field without any significant damage, with only a Tony Wolters two-run double counting against him. Four of the seven hits Gibson allowed went for extra bases. The right-hander has a 3.74 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 17:7 K:BB in 21.1 innings this season. He lines up for a road start versus the Padres on Thursday.
Aug 10 2020Gibson (0-2) took the loss versus the Mariners on Monday, allowing four runs on nine hits and a walk in 4.1 innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson did relatively well until the fifth inning, when he allowed a three-run go-ahead blast to Kyle Lewis. The Rangers were unable to retake the lead, and Gibson was on the hook for his second loss. He's got a 4.11 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 15:6 K:BB across 15.1 innings this season. The right-hander will make his next start Sunday in Colorado.
Aug 5 2020Gibson allowed three runs on four hits and two walks and struck out nine over six innings in a no-decision versus the Athletics on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson was solid in his second start of the year, but he gave up homers to Matt Olson and Ramon Laureano to account for the three runs. The 32-year-old Gibson has a 2.45 ERA and 1.27 WHIP across 11 innings this season. He'll keep searching for his first win when he starts versus the Mariners at home Monday.
Jul 30 2020Gibson isn't scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Giants, as the Rangers will instead go with Kolby Allard for the series finale in San Francisco. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since the Rangers had off days Thursday and Monday and were down a starter after Corey Kluber (shoulder) was moved on the 45-day injured list, there was some thought that the team might go with a four-man rotation until a fifth starter was first needed Aug. 8 versus the Angels. Instead, manager Chris Woodward has elected to break Allard in as a replacement in the rotation for Kluber this weekend, robbing Gibson of a start on his normal four days' rest. Gibson won't necessarily be in store for two starts during the Rangers' six-game slate next week either, as Woodward could use Monday's off day to reorder the rotation. In that scenario, Lance Lynn would line up for two turns (Aug. 4 in Oakland, Aug. 9 versus the Angels).
Jul 28 2020Gibson (0-1) took the loss Tuesday as the Rangers fell 4-1 to the Diamondbacks, getting charged with three unearned runs on five hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The only runs against the right-hander came in the first inning, after a two-out throwing error by Isiah Kiner-Falefa at third base kept the line moving for Arizona. Gibson wound up throwing 93 pitches (55 strikes), so he at least got to show he was fully stretched out. With the Rangers' new ballpark looking to be pitcher-friendly, Gibson could be a solid source of ratios this season, but wins might be hard to come by unless the team's offense wakes up.
Jul 22 2020Gibson is scheduled to start the fourth game of the season, Tuesday, July 28, against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson had a final tuneup Tuesday when he allowed five runs on six hits and struck out four over five innings. Normally a premier groundball pitcher, Gibson surrendered three home runs during the start. "I think the ball was up just a little bit," Gibson told Sam Blum of the Dallas Morning News. "In some of the situations with the home runs, I probably threw the wrong pitch at the wrong time, probably the ones they were looking for. They took some really good swings on pitches that were actually located pretty good." Much of the talk about the Rangers' new stadium, Globe Life Field, centered around its spaciousness and not being conducive to home run hitters, but that was not evident Tuesday.
Jul 11 2020Gibson pitched five innings and threw 79 pitches in Friday's intrasquad game, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports. He allowed two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson allowed back-to-back home runs to Danny Santana and Rougned Odor, but the right-hander is on a steady progression as he prepares for the regular season. He was at 59 pitches in his first camp start and added another 20 his second time out. With two more starts expected during camp, Gibson, who projects as the No. 4 starter, should be in fine shape for the regular season.
Jul 5 2020Gibson threw five innings and 59 pitches in an intra-squad game Sunday, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson is back to full strength after a 2019 season in which he dealt with a season-long battle with ulcerative colitis. Although he made 29 starts and five relief appearances for the Twins last season, the right-hander struggled with his strength and energy, which was an area of focus during the winter. The condition presents a higher level of risk for Gibson should be contract COVID-19, but the right-hander is determined to pitch in 2020.
Apr 18 2020Gibson is throwing at home in a 70-foot long shed with an artificial mound in his backyard in Missouri during the delay for major league baseball, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson throws 40 to 50 pitches into a net, resting after about every set of 15 throws in order to simulate a three-inning outing. His six-year-old daughter holds an iPad hooked to a Rapsodo pitch monitor to determine balls and strikes. "I'm trying to mimic [spring training] as much as possible," Gibson said. "I figure we are going to have three or four starts to get ready. If you don't keep up your strength and endurance, you aren't going to be where you need to be when we get back." Last season, Gibson was stricken with ulcerative colitis, an auto-immune disease that puts him at an elevated risk for COVID-19 infection, although doctors told the right-hander there is no definitive evidence that he's at any higher risk for the disease's most serious manifestations.
Mar 8 2020Gibson allowed one hit and one walk while striking out two over three scoreless innings in Saturday's spring game against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson worked another scoreless spring start, but it didn't happen without drama. The Brewers loaded the bases with one out in the third inning, but the right-hander escaped unscathed by getting Orlando Arcia to ground into an inning-ending double play. Of Gibson's repertoire, he throws the sinker the most, so it's not surprising to see him generate the double-play groundout. He leads MLB with 136 double plays over the last six seasons. "Definitely glad those haven't left me," Gibson told T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com. "I feel really confident in those situations that I can get out of them. Definitely like to see those happen early on in spring." There was some concern that Gibson, who battled ulcerative colitis in 2019, might be behind other starters. However, he was able to throw another 15 pitches in the bullpen following Saturday's stint and, with another three scheduled Cactus League starts, should have his pitch count up in time to take his first turn through the rotation.
Mar 3 2020Gibson allowed one hit and one walk while striking out one over two scoreless innings in Monday's spring game against Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson, who made his spring debut Monday, is slightly behind schedule in building up innings as he manages an ulcerative colitis diagnosis that impacted his 2019 season. "I felt pretty good in all the live BPs that I threw in the bullpen," Gibson told Sam Blum of the Dallas Morning News. "So I wasn't feeling like I needed to work on one thing. I think next time I'll work on a little more consistency with my curveball and my changeup a little bit." The right-hander is lining up to be the No. 4 starter in Texas' rotation.
Feb 12 2020The Rangers are being careful with Gibson, who lost strength last season while dealing with ulcerative colitis, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson has been throwing his bullpen sessions and looks ready for spring training, but pitching coach Julio Rangel plans to take it "a day at a time." Rangel later added that he does not foresee any problems with Gibson, who is slated as a member of the rotation.
Nov 27 2019Gibson agreed in principle Wednesday on a contract with the Rangers, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The terms of Gibson's contract aren't known, but he'll likely head to Texas on a multi-year deal after fielding interest from several teams so far this offseason. The 32-year-old has demonstrated some impressive durability with at least 29 starts in each of the past three seasons, but he took a step back in 2019, posting a 4.84 ERA and 1.44 WHIP across 160 innings with the Twins. The Rangers are likely hoping that Gibson can at least eat some innings as a mid-rotation pitcher, and the move to Texas may not be as punishing for his fantasy prospects compared to years past with the team set to play games under a retractable roof in 2020.
Sep 24 2019Gibson logged two innings of relief Tuesday against the Tigers and does not appear in line to make another start this season. He gave up one run on four hits and zero walks while striking out four and picking up the hold. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He had lineup up to start Wednesday, but after he was used in relief it was announced that Randy Dobnak would start Wednesday on short rest. Gibson had an 8.02 ERA and 2.08 WHIP in 33.2 innings over his most recent eight appearances, so it makes sense that the Twins would move him to the bullpen at this stage of the season.
Sep 19 2019Gibson did not factor into the decision against Kansas City on Thursday, pitching 1.2 innings and giving up three runs on three hits and four walks while striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After coming out of the bullpen in his previous appearance, Gibson was given the opportunity to start Thursday but did little to stem the tide of his recent slump. The 31-year-old had trouble finding the plate all evening, tossing only 25 of 52 pitches for strikes and issuing four walks in 1.2 innings. Gibson held a 4.02 ERA after a win on Aug. 3 but has since gone 2-3 while posting an 8.02 ERA over 33.2 innings. He'll try to turn things around in a road matchup against Detroit on Wednesday.
Sep 16 2019Gibson made his second relief appearance of the season in Sunday's 7-5 loss to the Indians, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk in his lone inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a stint on the injured list caused by ulcerative colitis, Gibson was reinstated Thursday and was lit up in his return to the rotation, giving up six runs in 4.2 innings. Given that the Twins already had 13 healthy relief options on hand with the expanded September roster, manager Rocco Baldelli's decision to deploy Gibson out of the bullpen three days after starting was surprising. Gibson is still expected to start the next time his turn in the rotation comes up Thursday or Friday versus the Royals, but his usage in relief may provide a glimpse of what his role might be when the postseason arrives.
Sep 12 2019Gibson (13-7) took the loss against the Nationals on Thursday, giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits over 4.2 innings, striking out five and walking four as the Twins fell 12-6. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his first start after getting activated from the 10-day injured list with an abdominal injury, Gibson didn't have it, struggling with his command to the tune of four free passes and serving up a pair of long balls to Anthony Rendon and Adam Eaton. He now has a 4.73 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 151:49 K:BB across 154 innings and will look to right the ship in his next start, which is scheduled for a Tuesday home matchup against the White Sox.
Sep 10 2019Gibson (abdomen) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Brandon Warne of ZoneCoverage.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson isn't slated to toe the rubber until Thursday against Washington, but the Twins have elected to bring him off the injured list a few days before his outing. He was placed on the 10-day IL on Sept. 1 due to ulcerative colitis.
Sep 8 2019Gibson (abdomen) is scheduled to be activated off the 10-day injured list to start Thursday against the Nationals, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was reported earlier in the week that Gibson was expected to return during the three-game set versus the Nationals, and he'll take the ball in the series finale. The 31-year-old landed on the IL at the start of September with ulcerative colitis, but it won't end up causing an extended absence.
Sep 7 2019Gibson (abdomen) is expected to return next week during the Twins' series against the Nationals, which runs from Tuesday to Thursday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gibson has been sidelined since the start of September with ulcerative colitis, but he appears to be trending in the right direction. His exact return date should become clearer within the next few days.
Sep 1 2019The Twins placed Gibson on the 10-day injured list Sunday after he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis.
Aug 30 2019Gibson (13-6) picked up the win Friday, allowing four runs on 10 hits over five innings while striking out five in a 13-5 victory over the Tigers.

Jul 20 2018Gibson (4-7) got the loss against the Royals on Friday, giving up four earned runs on six hits over 5.1 innings, striking out five and walking two in the Twins' eventual 6-5 defeat.Gibson wasn't at his sharpest and wound up taking his seventh defeat of the season in this contest, but he's been providing unexpectedly solid fantasy value for much of the season. The 30-year-old is sporting a 3.57 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP to go along with a 119:48 K:BB over 121.0 innings, so he's pitched much better than his record might indicate. He's slated to take the mound next in a road matchup against the Blue Jays next Wednesday.
Jul 12 2018Gibson (4-6) allowed one earned run on five hits and no walks while striking out nine across eight innings to earn the win Thursday against the Rays.Gibson contained the Rays' lineup in his best start of the season, the first time he has surrendered neither a home run or a walk. He generated 16 swinging strikes and brought his career-best strikeout rate up to 8.9 K/9 through 115.2 innings. While his control has worsened this season, Gibson has otherwise improved his skills in most areas and his peripheral stats back up his re-emergence through the first half of the season.
Jul 7 2018Gibson (3-6) fired seven strong innings to earn the win over the Orioles on Saturday, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out nine.Gibson has been solid for the Twin through most of the season and he continued that with Saturday's effort, and was mostly strung by a first-inning two-run homer from Chris Davis. The 30-year-old will carry a 3.59 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 105:46 K:BB into his start against the Rays on Wednesday.
Jul 3 2018Gibson was charged with four runs (three earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out three over five innings in a no-decision against the Brewers on Monday. He ran into trouble in the fifth inning, allowing four straight hits -- including a homer -- before recording an out. The right-hander was still in line for the win even after the rough fifth, but the bullpen couldn't hold the lead and secure the victory -- a common theme throughout the first half. Gibson has just two wins to show for his efforts through 100.2 innings this season. He lines up for favorable home starts against Baltimore and Tampa Bay in his final two outings before the All-Star break.
Jun 27 2018Gibson (2-6) allowed five runs on 11 hits and a walk with seven strikeouts through seven innings in a loss Wednesday to the White Sox.Gibson was at least able to eat some innings for the Twins bullpen, but the White Sox just kept making solid contact against him. Just two of the 11 hits went for extra bases -- a Leury Garcia double and a Jose Abreu home run -- but the White Sox still managed to chip away for three run-scoring innings. This start broke a three-start quality start streak, but Gibson has still lasted into the seventh inning four times in the last six starts. Gibson has pitched much better than his record this season and will carry a 3.48 ERA in to Monday's start against the Brewers.
Jun 21 2018Gibson (2-5) took the loss Thursday to the Red Sox, surrendering two runs over 6.0 innings. He racked up five strikeouts and issued three walks and ten hits.Gibson kept the Twins in the game with his quality start, but a bullpen meltdown from Ryan Pressly and Matt Belisle cemented him as the tough-luck loser. He has lost three of his last four decisions, but Gibson has quietly been very strong over that stretch. Gibson owned a 2.20 ERA with a 0.95 WHIP over his last five starts entering Thursday and also racked up 26 strikeouts over 32.2 innings. He's lined up to make his next start in a much more favorable setting with an outing on the road against the White Sox on tap for Wednesday.
Jun 16 2018Gibson gave up just one run over seven innings with four walks and three strikeouts to improve to 2-4 in Friday's win over Cleveland.Gibson outdueled Corey Kluber in a surprise win. Gibson continues to be an unexpected success story this season as he lowered his ERA to 3.27. He's taken a significant leap in his strikeout rate to 8.8 K/9 after failing to get above 7.0 K/9 in his first five major league seasons.
Jun 9 2018Gibson (1-4) took the loss Saturday as the Twins fell 2-1 to the Angels, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over seven innings while striking out five. Both runs scored on solo homers, just the second time all year Gibson has served up multiple home runs in a start. The right-hander hasn't won since his first start of the season, but he's given the Twins seven quality starts and will carry a 3.45 ERA into his next outing Friday in Cleveland.
Jun 3 2018Gibson allowed two runs on two hits and two walks across 5.2 innings in a no-decision Sunday against the Indians. He struck out seven.Gibson's only real mistake came on a solo home run on the fifth inning by Edwin Encarnacion, with the other run on his ledger coming after he walked the leadoff man in the sixth and watched as the bullpen allowed him to score. He threw the ball well, delivering 64 percent of his pitches for strikes and inducing eight groundball outs. Gibson has allowed three earned runs or fewer in seven of his last eight starts and will take a 3.54 ERA as well as a surprising 9.6 K/9 into his scheduled start next weekend against the Angels.
May 30 2018Gibson struck out eight in seven scoreless innings Tuesday against the Royals, allowing five hits and one walk in a no-decision.Gibson threw his third scoreless outing of the season, but still hasn't managed to record a win in his last 10 straight starts. He's carrying a very respectable 3.57 ERA and 1.25 WHIP while holding opponents to a .222 batting average. The right-hander is sporting an excellent 9.4 K/9 (the best of his career by far) but he's also putting up a career worst 4.0 BB/9. Gibson will look for a win in his next start against the Indians in a matchup at home.
May 23 2018Gibson (1-3) took the loss Wednesday, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out three over six innings against the Tigers.Gibson remains winless since his first start of the season, but he nonetheless picked up a quality start in this one for the third time in four outings and the fourth time in the last six. The 30-year-old gave up another home run Wednesday -- his third in the last two starts -- but his 0.8 HR/9 is still well below last year's 1.4 mark. To go along with a 4.02 ERA, Gibson is sporting a career-best 9.3 K/9. He's slated to take on the Royals in Kansas City on Tuesday.
May 18 2018Gibson (1-2) allowed five runs on eight hits and four walks with five strikeouts over 5.1 innings in a loss Friday to the Brewers.A big part of Gibson's success entering Friday was his ability to keep the ball in the yard. Gibson posted HR/9 marks under 1.0 in each of his first two full seasons with the Twins, not coincidentally his two best seasons in the majors, and he had allowed just two homers in his first eight starts of 2018. The Brewers doubled that total in just three innings, as Ji-Man Choi and Jesus Aguilar both went deep. Gibson walked at least four batters for the fourth time this season as well as his ERA jumped over a half a point to 3.96.
May 12 2018Gibson allowed two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out six over six innings in a no-decision against the Angels on Saturday. While he has just one win to show for his efforts, Gibson has been quite good, posting a 3.43 ERA and 1.21 WHIP over 44.2 innings so far. His strikeout rate has exploded, jumping nine percentage points to 26.5 percent, and he's given up all of two home runs. It's understandable to be skeptical given his track record, but the underlying numbers mostly support what he's doing. Gibson lines up to face the Brewers at home next weekend.
May 6 2018Gibson allowed three earned runs on four hits while walking two and striking out eight across 6.2 innings Sunday against the White Sox. He did not factor in the decision.Gibson took advantage of one of the weaker lineups in the league on Sunday, putting together his third consecutive strong outing. In that span, he has allowed four earned runs over 17.2 innings and struck out 24 batters. He's been a polarizing pitcher over the past few seasons, never living up to his potential, but he has undeniably put together a strong start to the season that is largely backed up by his peripheral stats.
May 2 2018Gibson struck out six and walked two in a no-decision against the Blue Jays on Tuesday, allowing two runs on five hits in five innings.Gibson shut out the Blue Jays into the fifth, but allowed a home run to Kendrys Morales and an RBI single to Justin Smoak to tie up the game. Gibson has tallied a decision in only two of his six starts so far, while holding a respectable 3.38 ERA and 1.28 WHIP. The strikeout numbers have been a pleasant surprise from the 30-year-old, as he's currently sporting a 10.1 K/9, well above his career mark of 6.4 K/9. It remains to be seen if Gibson can maintain those numbers over the long haul. His next start will come against the White Sox in Chicago.
Apr 26 2018Gibson allowed just one hit and three walks across six scoreless innings Thursday against the Yankees. He struck out 10 batter, but didn't factor into the decision.Gibson shut down a difficult Yankees lineup in what was easily his best outing of the season. His 10 strikeouts were a career-high, and the 30-year-old now owns an impressive 10.0 K/9 to go with his 3.33 ERA through his first five starts. Gibson certainly deserved to win the contest after exiting with a three-run lead prior to the seventh inning, but the Twins' bullpen coughed up four runs over the final three frames of the game to help the Yankees prevail, forcing the veteran to settle for a no-decision. He'll look to keep things rolling in his next start, which will come against the Blue Jays on Tuesday.
Apr 21 2018Gibson (1-1) took the loss against the Rays on Saturday, allowing four runs on five hits and a walk over 6.1 innings while striking out seven. He threw 58 of 85 pitches for strikes and generated 16 swinging strikes, but Gibson was also hit hard when Tampa hitters were able to make contact -- he served up a two-run homer to C.J. Cron in the second inning, then got chased from the game in the seventh after back-to-back extra-base hits by Joey Wendle and Wilson Ramos. Gibson will take a 4.29 ERA into his next start, a tough road matchup Thursday against the Yankees.
Apr 11 2018Gibson allowed five runs on seven hits and four walks through 4.1 innings in a no-decision Wednesday against the Astros. He struck out four.Gibson struggled early and often Wednesday, allowing multiple baserunners to reach in every inning he appeared in but one. The real damage against Gibson came in the fifth inning, as the right-hander allowed four of the first five batters he faced to reach base before being yanked. All four baserunners would score, with two coming in after he handed the ball to Trevor Hildenberger. Gibson has now failed to make it out of the fifth inning in consecutive starts after tossing six scoreless innings in his 2018 debut. He'll look to get back on track in his next start, which is scheduled for Tuesday against the Indians.
Apr 5 2018Gibson allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits and one walk while striking out three across 4.1 innings Thursday against the Mariners.Gibson wasn't able to follow up his impressive season debut with an equal performance, but this was far from a disaster outing. He induced only four swinging strikes--down from 17 in his first start-- but kept the Mariners without any extra-base hits and surrendered only one walk. If he can continue to limit home runs and walks--both of which have held him back in past seasons-- he could take the step forward that many have expected of him.
Mar 31 2018Gibson (1-0) threw six hitless innings Saturday in Minnesota's 6-2 victory over the Orioles. He walked five and struck out six.Ryan Pressly grabbed the baton in the seventh and held the combined no-no through 7 2/3 innings before a Jonathan Schoop single broke it up. Despite throwing 102 pitches and logging only 56 strikes, Gibson danced around trouble -- and had a bit of help from a fantastic catch by Eddie Rosario -- to minimize damage as he reminded fantasy players of his brilliant second half last season (3.76 ERA, 8.2 K/9, 2.6 BB/9 across 76.2 innings) that sprung from some adjustments to his approach. With this gem piled on top of his strong spring training work, which included a 3.55 ERA with nine strikeouts and one walk in four starts, Gibson likely will pique the interest of many fantasy waiver-wire miners for this weekend's moves. Despite his rough past (4.70 career ERA), he may have brighter days ahead, even if walks continue to hold him back a bit.
Mar 16 2018Gibson continued his strong spring by giving up just one run over five innings Thursday to lower his ERA to 1.80.Gibson has seven strikeouts and no walks in ten innings this spring. He'll begin the season as the fourth starter but will move to the fifth starter role when Ervin Santana returns from a finger injury a month or so into the season. Gibson's spring could be a carryover from the second half of last year when he went 7-3 with a 3.76 ERA and increased his strikeouts from 5.6 K/9 to 8.2 K/9.
Feb 26 2018Gibson threw two scoreless innings and allowed no hits with no walks or strikeouts in his spring debut Sunday against Tampa Bay.Gibson is competing for one of the final two rotation spots this spring, but looks like a lock given his strong second half (4.6 BB/9 to 2.6 BB/9 and 5.6 K/9 to 8.2 K/9). However, he still had an unremarkable 5.07 ERA overall last season (identical to his 2016 ERA). Gibson has always had good groundball rates (50.8 percent last season) so if his command gains are legitimate, he could carry that second-half success over in 2018.
Feb 15 2018Gibson lost his arbitration hearing Thursday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. With the Twins emerging victorious, Gibson will now earn $4.2 million in 2018 rather than the $4.55 million figure he filed for. The 30-year-old posted an unremarkable 5.07 ERA last season (identical to his 2016 ERA), but he went 10-3 with a much more respectable 3.76 ERA in 13 second-half starts. His second-half success can likely be attributed to his improved walk and strikeout rates following the All-Star break (4.6 BB/9 to 2.6 BB/9 and 5.6 K/9 to 8.2 K/9). Gibson should enter the season in the Twins' rotation, and he could pick up where he left off in 2017 if his gains are legitimate.
Sep 29 2017Gibson lasted just 3.2 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts in a no-decision Friday against Detroit.Gibson had completed at least six innings for seven straight starts before struggling to find a rhythm Friday night. The Twins kept his winning streak alive at six decisions, and he was nasty at times, but Tigers hitters punished every mistake he made. Despite Friday's hiccup and his 5.07 ERA, Gibson has earned a spot in Minnesota's playoff roster with his otherwise excellent work down the stretch.
Sep 29 2017Gibson will be on a pitch count in Friday's start, according to the Twins' official website.Gibson will be pitching on six days rest Friday, but manager Paul Molitor wants him available for Tuesday's wild-card game -- just four days later -- so he will limit his pitches in an effort to keep him fresh if needed.
Sep 22 2017Gibson (12-10) allowed three runs on five hits and two walks striking out six across seven innings to earn the victory.Gibson gave up single runs in three different innings while receiving six runs of support which helped him earn his 12th victory of the campaign. Despite his 5.02 ERA on the season, he's now fired quality starts in six of his last seven outings while lowering his ERA over a full run during that time, making him a player who's been a strong fantasy option down the stretch. He'll make his next start Thursday against the Indians.
Sep 17 2017Gibson (11-10) allowed five runs on three hits and five walks while striking out eight batters through six innings to collect the win against Toronto on Sunday. This clearly wasn't Gibson's best form, and it was especially discouraging after entering on a roll. The 29-year-old righty posted a 1.38 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 7.2 K/9 through his previous five starts, after all. He lines up for consecutive road starts against Detroit and Cleveland to finish the year, and the matchup against the Tigers sets up as a bounce-back spot for Gibson.
Sep 12 2017Gibson (10-10) tossed six scoreless innings in Tuesday's win over the Padres. He allowed four hits and struck out six.The Twins offense afforded Gibson a seven-run lead over the first two innings and the 29-year-old was able to cruise from there. He was dominant in his six innings of work, allowing just four Padres to reach base before being pulled from the lopsided contest after throwing just 74 pitches. Gibson has now recorded five consecutive quality starts and is proving to be a fairly reliable fantasy starting pitching option against lesser opponents. He lines up for a Sunday start against the Blue Jays, whom he held to just two runs over 6.2 innings during his Aug. 27 start.
Sep 7 2017Gibson held the Royals to two runs on eight hits with one walk and no strikeouts over seven innings in Thursday's no-decision.Despite the lack of strikeouts, Gibson was effective once again after beating Kansas City in his previous start. His season-long numbers still look ugly, but the righty has picked things up over his past four outings. Gibson's 3-0 in that span and has allowed just five runs in 26.2 innings for a 1.69 ERA. He has an excellent opportunity to keep the good times rolling in his next start Tuesday against a Padres offense that's produced the fewest runs in the league.
Sep 2 2017Gibson (9-10) earned the win over the Royals on Saturday, allowing five hits over six scoreless innings. He struck out five and did not issue a walk. While the offensive explosion was the story of the night for Minnesota in a 17-0 rout, Gibson was very good in his own right. Gibson has earned wins in three straight starts and has posted a 20:2 K:BB in that stretch, but those performances have come against some of the coldest offenses in the American League (White Sox, Blue Jays and Royals). That said, he does get the Royals again his next time out.
Aug 27 2017Gibson (8-10) allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk over 6.2 innings to earn the win Sunday against the Blue Jays. He struck out seven.Gibson allowed a run on consecutive hits in the second inning but was able to settle down and navigate through the next 4.2 frames while only allowing one additional run to come across. He's notched two straight quality starts but remains a rather unappealing fantasy option with his 5.61 ERA. He'll square off against the Royals on Friday.
Aug 22 2017Gibson (7-10) earned the win over the White Sox on Tuesday, giving up one run on seven hits and a walk over seven innings while striking out eight. The righty recorded a season high in strikeouts en route to just his fifth quality start of the year. Gibson still carries a 5.76 ERA, though, and he'll need more than one good start against a rebuilding foe to earn the trust of fantasy GMs again. He'll next take the mound Sunday in Toronto.
Aug 17 2017Gibson (6-10) allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out three batters through four innings during Thursday's loss to Cleveland.Gibson allowed 20 runs through 27.1 innings over his past five starts for a 6.59 ERA and 1.65 WHIP. The underwhelming stretch continued Thursday against Cleveland, as the 29-year-old righty continues to show little fantasy promise. Outside of streaming Gibson against weak opponents, it's difficult to find incentive to utilize Gibson in the majority of fantasy settings. He lines up to face the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field in his next start.
Aug 16 2017Gibson's scheduled start against the Twins on Wednesday was postponed by rain. With the makeup game being scheduled as a doubleheader on Thursday, the Twins will simply push Gibson back a day to join Jose Berrios on the double card. The 29-year-old, who owns a 6.02 ERA in 20 starts this season, will pitch Game 1 against Carlos Carrasco.
Aug 11 2017Gibson (6-9) allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six over 4.2 innings, but received no decision Friday against the Tigers.Gibson had a 5-1 inning as he started the fifth inning, but after giving up a pair of runs in the frame, he was removed from the game one out before qualifying for a potential win. He's allowed at least three runs in each of his last five outings, and with a 6.09 ERA, he's not been very useful for fantasy managers. He'll make his next start Saturday against the Diamondbacks.
Aug 5 2017Gibson allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four batters through 5.1 innings during Saturday's loss to Texas.Gibson allowed 14 runs through 17.1 innings over his previous three outings, so this was a better start from the 2009 first-round selection. He's struggled to gain any momentum on the mound this season, and with a 6.03 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 5.9 K/9 for the campaign, his fantasy value is extremely limited. Gibson lines up to face the Brewers at Miller Park in his next start.
Aug 4 2017Gibson was called up after Friday's game and will start Saturday against Texas, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.Gibson will get the first shot at replacing the recently traded Jaime Garcia in the rotation. He owned a terrible 6.08 ERA in his first 18 starts before getting the boot, but Gibson was excellent in three turns for Triple-A Rochester, where he struck out 23 and allowed just four runs in 17.1 innings.
Aug 3 2017Gibson is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Rochester to start Saturday's game against the Rangers, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.Gibson will rejoin the Twins' rotation in place of Jaime Garcia, who was traded to the Yankees last week. He owns a 6.08 ERA over 94.2 innings (18 starts) this season, so his start may provide a good opportunity to stack Texas hitters.
Jul 22 2017Gibson (6-8) allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five batters through 7.1 innings during Saturday's win over Detroit. This was the first time Gibson had pitched into the eighth inning all season, and the win also ended a two-game losing streak. The former first-round pick continues to post disappointing fantasy numbers, as his 6.08 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 5.9 K/9 aren't moving the needle in many settings. Gibson projects to make his next start on the road against the Athletics.
Jul 16 2017Gibson (5-8) allowed four runs on six hits and four walks with six strikeouts over six innings in Sunday's loss to the Astros.Gibson's struggles against the league's most productive lineup came as a surprise to nobody given his 6.31 ERA in 16 starts coming in. This outing actually dropped that number to 6.29, but there's still little reason to give Gibson a look in any format when he next takes the mound Saturday against the Tigers.
Jul 9 2017Gibson (5-7) allowed seven runs on nine hits with two walks and one strikeout over four innings in Sunday's loss to Baltimore.Gibson still hasn't pitched seven innings in a game this season while allowing three or more earned runs in 11 of 16 starts. The high-powered Astros lineup should have a field day against him next Sunday at Minute Maid Park.
Jul 4 2017Gibson gave up two runs with four strikeouts and two walks over 6.2 innings to improve to 5-6 in Tuesday's win over the Angels.Gibson threw a season high in innings pitched. He needed a strong outing after posting a 5.24 ERA and 11:8 K:BB in 22.1 innings over his previous four starts. After posting an 8.20 ERA in his first six starts that saw him briefly sent to the minors, Gibson has a 4.59 ERA in his last nine starts. However, he's still walking too many batters (4.1 BB/9) and is too inconsistent for most fantasy purposes.
Jun 29 2017Gibson (4-6) allowed five runs -- three earned -- on six hits and a walk while striking out just two batters through 5.2 innings during Thursday's loss to Boston. While the former first-round pick has turned in a few strong outings this season, it's nearly impossible to rely on Gibson with any degree of confidence. After all, he sports a crippling 6.11 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and 5.9 K/9. He projects to make a home start against the Angels in his next start.
Jun 18 2017Gibson (4-5) took the loss despite tossing a quality start, allowing three runs over six innings Sunday against the Indians. He struck out four and walked three.Perhaps this was the universe's way of evening fortunes out, since Gibson earned the win in his last start even though he gave up six runs. With eight hits allowed, plus the walks, the Indians were constantly on base against Gibson Sunday.
Jun 13 2017Gibson gave up six runs on a career-high 12 hits over six innings, but improved to 4-4 thanks to plenty of run support in a 20-7 win over Seattle.Gibson took a step back after finally starting to show some life the last three starts (2.65 ERA) but his outing will be masked by the large run support that likely kept him in the game a few innings longer than his performance warranted. He did have four strikeouts and no walks despite giving up 12 hits, which is one positive since too many walks have been a problem (4.8 BB/9 before Tuesday).
Jun 8 2017Gibson gave up one run over six innings to improve to 3-4 in Thursday's win over Seattle. He had four strikeouts and three walks.Gibson has started to turn his season around as he's allowed just five earned runs over 17 innings in his last three starts. He has a 15:10 K:BB over that span, so walks continue to be an issue. However, he's bounced back well enough from allowing an 8.20 ERA in his first six starts to remain in the rotation for the near term.
Jun 3 2017Gibson (2-4) allowed two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six over 5.2 innings in Friday's 11-5 win over the Angels. He tossed five scoreless frames to begin the game and appeared headed for his best outing of the season, but Gibson tired in the sixth and ended up falling one out short of a quality start. The right-hander has shown some marginal improvement lately, but he'll still carry a 7.23 ERA into his next start Thursday at Seattle.
May 28 2017Gibson gave up three runs (two earned) with five hits, four walks and four strikeouts over 5.1 innings in a no-decision in Sunday's extra-inning loss.It wasn't a great outing as Gibson continues to struggle with his control. He's given up 14 walks in his last 19.1 innings. However, it was likely a decent enough outing to keep him in the rotation for another start.
May 22 2017Gibson (1-4) allowed six runs on seven hits and four walks across five innings during Monday's win over the Orioles. He struck out five.Gibson was sent down to Triple-A Rochester earlier this month in hopes of turning things around after a rough start, but Monday's outing wasn't all that inspiring. He allowed five runs on five hits in the second inning and another on an RBI double by Manny Machado in the fourth. Gibson struggled to throw strikes and was battered at times, but he was allowed to labor through five frames as his team remained competitive, before earning him the win in the latter innings. He now owns a ghastly 8.62 ERA through 31.1 innings in 2017 and seems likely to be headed back to the minors.
May 22 2017Gibson was recalled from Triple-A Rochester and will start Monday's game against the Orioles, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. As expected, Gibson was summoned to the big club ahead of his scheduled start Monday. Although the 29-year-old struggled across six starts with the Twins earlier in the season (8.20 ERA and 16:13 K:BB through 26.1 innings), he posted a 2.92 ERA and 18:5 K:BB through 12.1 innings with Rochester thereafter, so we'll see if his improvement translates.
May 22 2017Manager Paul Molitor confirmed that Gibson would be recalled from Triple-A Rochester to start Monday against the Orioles, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. "There's been some improvement on things we thought were affecting his ability to compete at a little higher level up here, Twins manager Paul Molitor said of Gibson. "Some of it's overall strike percentage, some of it's getting ahead of hitters. We have a tendency to be looking at those things a little bit differently than we have in the past and how they seem to measure up to your overall performance."After failing to deliver a quality start and compiling a 8.20 ERA and 1.97 WHIP in six outings with the Twins earlier this season, Gibson seemed on track for an extended stay in the minors following his demotion to Rochester on May 4. However, after the right-hander notched 10 strikeouts in his most recent outing May 15 and turned in a 2.92 ERA over two starts at Triple-A, the Twins brass felt that Gibson was ready for a second chance in the big leagues. Gibson will be formally recalled shortly before Monday's game and claim a 25-man roster spot from Phil Hughes (shoulder), who will be placed on the disabled list in a corresponding move.
Apr 29 2017Gibson gave up three runs over 5.1 innings with one strikeout and three walks, but got a no-decision in Friday's comeback win over Kansas City.Gibson has been terrible to start the season as he had a 9.00 ERA and 12:7 K:BB in 17 innings over his first four starts. He wasn't as bad in Friday's outing which should keep him in the rotation awhile longer, but he'll need to improve or could be sent to Triple-A.
Apr 23 2017Gibson gave up seven runs (six earned) on a home run and eight hits over 2.2 innings in Sunday's loss to Detroit. He fell to 0-3 this season with a 9.00 ERA.Gibson has been terrible in four starts with five home runs allowed and just a 12:7 K:BB ratio in 17 innings. Gibson will likely remain in the rotation for awhile longer even if he struggles, but his spot in the rotation my not be as secure as in prior years with a new front office regime.
Apr 17 2017Gibson (0-2) allowed three runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out two over 5.1 innings in Monday's 3-1 loss to the Indians.Gibson will carry a 6.91 ERA into his next start, and the 29-year-old right-hander has a disappointing 9:5 K:BB ratio after three starts. He's allowed at least three runs in each of his three starts to begin the year. Gibson, who is an average pitcher, is also an injury risk after suffering from a sore shoulder in 2016 following Tommy John surgery. Aside from AL-only leagues, there's not a whole lot to like about Gibson.
Apr 12 2017Gibson (0-1) allowed five runs on four hits and a walk and struck out just a single batter during Wednesday's 5-3 loss to Detroit.Gibson also struggled in his first outing of the season, so considering he entered the campaign with a career 4.59 ERA and 1.41 WHIP, it appears it will be more of the same from the 29-year-old righty in 2017. It's also difficult to rely on a pitcher that doesn't move the needle in the strikeouts column, as Gibson entered Wednesday's outing with an underwhelming 15.7 career strikeout percentage.
Apr 6 2017Gibson gave up three runs on five hits (including two home runs) and two walks while striking out five over five innings against the Royals on Thursday. He did not factor in the decision in the Twins' 5-3 win.The right-hander held the Royals scoreless through four but he unraveled late, allowing four hits (three for extra bases) and a walk to the final eight batters he faced. While Gibson will continue to eat innings for the Twins, there's little to get excited about here from a fantasy perspective. His peripherals from a year ago suggest he was only slightly better than his 5.07 ERA would indicate.
Mar 26 2017Gibson threw six scoreless innings with four strikeouts in Sunday's loss to Boston to lower his spring training ERA to 1.59. Gibson will make a minor league spring start Friday and then start Minnesota's third game of the regular season on April 6, MLB.com reports.Gibson altered his delivery in the offseason to help reduce shoulder pain and the new mechanics could point toward a bounceback season after a disappointing 5.07 ERA last year. He has just a 6.1 K/9 this spring, however, as he'll likely need to improve his strikeout rate to make a significant leap this year.
Mar 16 2017Gibson gave up one run over five innings Thursday to lower his spring training ERA to 2.08. He has a 13:4 K:BB in 17.1 innings.Gibson altered his delivery in the offseason to help reduce shoulder pain he had last season. So far the results are encouraging as he's set to begin the season as the No. 3 starter.
Feb 22 2017Gibson changed his delivery this offseason in hopes of keeping his shoulder healthy this season, Mike Berardino of The Pioneer Press reports.Gibson was sidelined for seven weeks last season with shoulder pain and said he felt "some discomfort" when he started his offseason throwing program. Intent on finding a fix, the 29-year-old turned to a physical trainer who showed him how to pronate properly at the end of his delivery. This motion keeps the humerus from rubbing against connective tissues, providing better longevity throughout the season. Gibson figures to be a large part of the Twins' rotation this season, so the alteration could lend benefits down the homestretch.
Jan 13 2017Gibson agreed to a one-year, $2.9 million contract with the Twins on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.A lack of alternatives in the Twins' organization is perhaps the best thing working in Gibson's favor entering 2017. He seems secure in the rotation (at least to start the year) despite posting a 5.07 ERA and 1.56 WHIP in 147.1 innings last season. Gibson was done in largely by walks (3.4 BB/9) and home runs (1.22 HR/9).
Sep 30 2016Gibson gave up four earned runs over 6.1 innings with eight strikeouts and one walk, but got a no-decision in Thursday's win over Kansas City.Gibson had a season high in strikeouts in his last start which at least offers some hope for next year after a disappointing year. Gibson was expected to improve this season to become a reliable starter at the top of the rotation, but instead took a step back as both his walk rate and strikeout rates were worse than last year. He finishes the season with a 5.07 ERA and 4.75 FIP. It will be interesting to see if he still fits prominently into Minnesota's plans for the rotation once a new GM is hired in the offseason.
Sep 24 2016Gibson gave up two runs over five innings with four walks and two strikeouts, but got a no-decision in Friday's loss to Seattle.Gibson struggled with his control, but the bigger issue for the Twins was the bullpen which gave up eight runs after Gibson left. Gibson will make his last start of the season Friday at Kansas City.
Sep 19 2016Gibson gave up three earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and one walk over five innings in Sunday's loss to the Mets.Gibson gave up two runs in the first inning but recovered. He has two more starts to improve on a disappointing season as he's 6-10 with a 5.10 ERA as he's seen his K/9, BB/9 and HR/9 rates all get worse than last season.
Sep 13 2016Gibson (6-9) pitched eight innings, allowing just one run on five hits and three walks while striking out four Tigers in Tuesday's win.Gibson allowed a run in the bottom of the first before stringing together seven scoreless frames en route to his first win since mid-August. The 28-year-old has been wildly inconsistent in the second half of the season, making Gibson a difficult play under any format. His six wins and 5.08 ERA through 131 innings are Gibson's worst marks for any of his three seasons with 20-plus starts. He'll go for back-to-back wins when he toes the rubber Sunday against the Mets.
Sep 8 2016Gibson allowed four runs on eight hits -- two of them homers -- over six innings in a no-decision against the Royals on Wednesday. He struck out four and walked two.The righty gave up only six home runs over his first 10 starts, but has become extremely prone to the long ball lately, having given up multiple homers in three of his last five outings. Not coincidentally, he's give up 18 runs over his last 22 innings -- though to be fair, he hasn't experienced much success in general this year. Only rarely does Gibson deliver a start that makes you happy he was in your lineup, so it's best to stay away from him for fantasy purposes in most leagues.
Sep 2 2016Gibson (5-9) allowed five runs on nine hits, struck out six and walked one in a loss to the White Sox on Friday. He actually took a two-run lead into the fourth, but from there, the game completely swung in Chicago's favor. Gibson tossed up a two-run homer to Todd Frazier and then allowed another run in the fifth. Chicago went on to win 11-4. The 28-year-old has posted just one quality start since the beginning of August. He is 5-9 with a 5.31 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 82 strikeouts in 117 innings this season. His next start will be Wednesday versus Kansas City.
Aug 28 2016Gibson (5-8) gave up four runs on eight hits, including two home runs, and three walks over 5.1 innings while striking out one but escaped with a no-decision in Sunday's loss to the Blue Jays. His control his completely deserted him in August and Gibson now has a putrid 19:17 K:BB in 34 innings over six starts on the month en route to a 6.62 ERA. He'll next take the mound Friday at home against the White Sox.
Aug 24 2016Gibson (5-8) allowed five runs, seven hits and four walks over five innings Tuesday against the Tigers. He struck out four in the loss.Gibson followed up his complete-game victory with a dud Tuesday. The four free passes fell one short of his season high set back on April 6 in his first start of the season. The 28-year-old has been less than impressive during his 2016 campaign, but Gibson has been at his worst lately. His 6.59 ERA and five homers allowed through five August starts are his worst marks for any month this year. Gibson's next start, Sunday versus a dangerous Blue Jays lineup, won't make life any easier for the right-hander.
Aug 17 2016Gibson (5-7) tossed a complete game in Wednesday's win over the Braves. He allowed three runs on eight hits and three walks while notching six strikeouts.Gibson needed a season-high 115 pitches to finish off his first career nine-inning complete game. The only runs he allowed were on two swings, a two-run homer in the third by Freddie Freeman, and a solo shot in the ninth given up to Nick Markakis. Working around the blemish in the ninth, Gibson struck out the side in the final frame to cement the night as his own. However, it's tough to put much stock in this game as an indicator of future performances for the 28-year-old. The Braves are the worst offense in baseball, and Gibson has been incredibly inconsistent all year, thus offering reason to pause before getting too excited about his big night in Atlanta.
Aug 7 2016Gibson (4-6) allowed two runs on six hits and four walks over five innings Sunday while striking out two in a 6-3 win over the Rays.It was hardly his sharpest outing of the season but with Miguel Sano putting on a power display, Gibson was just good enough to qualify for the win. After a solid July that saw him post a 3.69 ERA and 28:7 K:BB in 31.2 innings the wheels seem to be coming off for Gibson in August, as he now has a 4:5 K:BB in 9.2 innings through two starts to go along with an ugly 7.45 ERA. He'll try to turn things around Friday at home against the Royals.
Aug 2 2016Gibson (3-6) was hammered for six runs on ten hits and one walk while striking out two Indians on Tuesday, but luckily escaped with a no-decision.Tuesday marked Gibson's shortest outing since April 22, and hiked his ERA up to 4.94 on the season. The right-hander entered the game coming off his best month of the season in which he posted a 3.69 ERA over five starts. Gibson had struck out four-plus batters in each of his previous eight outings before notching just two in this one. The 28-year-old also gave up more than nine hits for just the second time in his 14 starts this season. He'll try to chalk this up as a bad day and look to rebound in his next outing Sunday against the Rays.
Jul 28 2016Gibson (3-6) pitched six innings, allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out six in a no-decision Thursday against the Orioles.Gibson's quality start was ruined by the throw-back performance put on by Orioles' starter Ubaldo Jimenez (five innings, one run and eight K's). For the first time all season, Gibson did not issue a free pass. The 28-year-old struck out six-plus for the fifth time in his last six starts, something the righty hadn't done in any of his first seven starts in 2016. Although he's having a down season compared to the last two, Gibson has pitched better of late and has the potential to make a significant impact as we near the fantasy playoff season.
Jul 22 2016Gibson (3-6) allowed one run on two hits and one walk while striking out six over eight innings to earn the win Friday at the Red Sox.After allowing a lead-off homer to Mookie Betts, Gibson stymied the Red Sox the rest of the way, leaving the contest after throwing only 96 pitches through eight innings. This was his first quality start over his last four outings, and he now has a 4.67 ERA to go along with a 1.39 WHIP on the year. He'll make his next start Thursday against the Orioles.
Jul 17 2016Gibson (2-6) allowed four runs on 10 hits and one walk while striking out four over six innings to take the loss Sunday against the Indians.Gibson entered the fifth inning only trailing 1-0, but he was tagged for three runs between the fifth and sixth innings, leading to his sixth loss of the season. He's only thrown one quality start in his last five outings, and his ERA is at 5.12. He'll make his next start Friday at the Red Sox.
Jul 8 2016Gibson (2-5) allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out six over five innings, but received no decision Friday at the Rangers.Gibson left the contest with a 5-4 lead, but the bullpen quickly lost the lead in the sixth inning, leading to the no decision. He's only fired one quality start over his last four outings, and he has a 5.02 ERA on the year. He'll make his next start after the All-Star break.
Jul 3 2016Gibson (2-5) allowed four runs, two of which were earned, on five hits and two walks while striking out six over 6.2 innings to take the loss Sunday against the Rangers.Gibson went into the seventh inning with a 5-2 lead before giving up a pair of runs in the frame, but the bullpen was able to hold on to give him his second win of the season. He's now held opponents to two or fewer earned runs in three of his last four starts to lower his ERA from 6.49 to 4.82. He'll make his next start Friday at the Rangers.
Jun 16 2016Gibson (0-5) held the Yankees to three runs on six hits over 6.1 innings Thursday, but took another loss. He struck out four and walked a pair. This was a far sight better than Gibson's first start off the DL, and he deserved a better fate -- he left the game with two on and one out in the seventh inning, then reliever Fernando Abad promptly gave up a three-run homer that plated the inherited runners. Still, Gibson's low-strikeout, high-walk ways don't add up to a fantasy-friendly formula, making him a consideration strictly for adventurous AL-only owners and those in extremely deep mixed leagues.
Jun 11 2016Gibson (0-4) (shoulder) received a rude welcome upon his return from the DL on Saturday, as he was touched up for seven hits, five earned runs and a walk over 5.2 innings in a 15-4 loss to the Red Sox. He struck out two.Gibson managed to only throw 56 of 94 pitches for strikes, and induced only six swinging strikes overall. The 28-year-old righty picked up where he left off before his injury, which isn't a good thing. He'd been battered by the Nationals for seven earned runs over three innings back on April 22, and had the misfortune of drawing one of the most dangerous offenses in baseball in the form of the Red Sox in his first start back. Gibson got into early trouble by yielding an RBI double to Xander Bogaerts and a three-run homer to Jackie Bradley, Jr. in the first inning, but left the game in the sixth with the Twins trailing only 5-4. He'll try once more for his first win of the season against the Yankees next Thursday.
Jun 10 2016Gibson (shoulder) was reinstated from the 15-day DL.He's set to start Saturday against the Red Sox. The original plan was for Gibson to return last week, but the club decided to exercise caution and have the righty make a rehab start at the Triple-A level before returning.
Jun 7 2016Gibson (shoulder) is slated to be activated from the DL and start Saturday against the Red Sox, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. The original plan was for Gibson to return last week, but the club decided to exercise caution and have the righty make a rehab start at the Triple-A level before rejoining the team. He'll draw a tough matchup in his first start back against a potent Boston lineup, and it remains to be seen if he'll be held on any sort of pitch count or innings limit.
Jun 3 2016Gibson (shoulder) will make a rehab start with Triple-A Rochester on Sunday, MLB.com's Kyle Gibson reports. He will indeed head out on a rehab assignment after getting scratched from his scheduled start Thursday, but it should be a relatively short stay with Rochester. Gibson is eligible to come off the DL in mid June.
Jun 3 2016Gibson (shoulder/back) is likely to make another rehab start at Triple-A Rochester before returning from the DL, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.Gibson was set to return from a shoulder injury and be activated from the 15-day DL on Thursday, but he couldn't make the start due to a stiff back. The Twins are worried the back issue may lead him to put more pressure on his injured shoulder. Gibson threw 40 pitches in a bullpen session Thursday instead of making the start. He may now not return from the DL until mid June.
Jun 2 2016Gibson (shoulder) has been scratched from Thursday's scheduled start against Tampa Bay due to a stiff backHughes was set to be activated from the DL before the start, but instead Phil Hughes will move back into the rotation and start Thursday. It's not clear how long Gibson's return from the DL will be delayed.
May 30 2016Gibson (shoulder) will be activated from the DL and start Thursday against the Rays, MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger reports.Gibson will take the rotation spot of Phil Hughes, who will be moved to the bullpen according to manager Paul Molitor. Gibson had limited success earlier in the season (6.10 ERA), but has emerged from two rehab starts relatively unscathed, and could be in line for improvement now that he's healthy.
May 30 2016Gibson (shoulder) had his scheduled bullpen session Sunday postponed as the Twins may give him a third minor league rehab outing while trying to figure out where he fits into the rotation, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.Gibson has given up one run in 9.1 innings in two minor league starts. He may be ready to return, but the Twins had five starters perform well the past week and don't know who to drop from the rotation. Gibson may get another minor league start while the Twins figure out what roster move to make.
May 23 2016Gibson (shoulder) threw 4.1 scoreless innings Sunday in a rehab start for High-A Fort Myers. He's expected to make two more rehab starts, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.Gibson would return to the major league rotation on June 6 if all goes to plan. He threw 56 pitches in Sunday's start.
May 19 2016Gibson (shoulder) will begin his rehab assignment Sunday at High-A Fort Myers, Mike Berardino of the Pioneer Press reports.Gibson was able to get through 45 pitches during his simulated game Thursday, which was the final step in his rehab before returning to game action. He'll take the ball Sunday at High-A Fort Myers on Sunday, but he'll need a few starts in order to stretch out his pitch count. With that in mind, Gibson should be on pace to for a return to the Twins' rotation in early-to-mid-June.
May 19 2016Gibson (shoulder) threw a 45-pitch side session Thursday and could begin a rehab assignment over the weekend, Mike Berardino of the Pioneer Press reports.Thursday's 45-pitch session was another checkpoint in Gibson's recovery and he appears to be in line to set out on a rehab assignment in the near future. According to Berardino, Gibson will need a minimum of 2-to-3 starts on his rehab stint to build up his pitch count to where he can rejoin the Twins' rotation.
May 15 2016Gibson (shoulder) will throw a 45-pitch bullpen session Monday, LaVelle Neal of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.Gibson has previously thrown two bullpen sessions without incident, so if his third one goes swimmingly, he'll likely be on track to throw live batting practice Thursday. After that, Gibson would require a rehab assignment in the minors before getting activated from the DL.
May 14 2016Gibson (shoulder) had a bullpen session Friday, but will likely need a few more sessions before he's ready for a minor league rehabilitation assignment, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.Since he'll likely need two outings or more on a rehab assignment, it doesn't look like he'll return before June.
May 10 2016Gibson (shoulder) threw a successful bullpen session Tuesday, Brian Murphy of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports."So far he's doing good," general manager Terry Ryan said of Gibson, who is slated to get back onto the mound Friday for additional work. It sounds like Gibson is moving in the right direction, but he figures to need a couple live sessions and ultimately a minor league rehab assignment before receiving the green light to return to the majors.
May 2 2016Gibson (shoulder) has started light throwing, LaVelle Neal III of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. It's unclear if the Twins are planning on a rehab assignment for Gibson once he's healthy enough to progress to game situations again, but it appears as though he'll miss more than the 15-day minimum with his current ailment.
Apr 29 2016Gibson (shoulder) could be out longer than the minimum 15 days on the DL, the Star Tribune's LaVelle Neal reports. The Twins will be in no rush to get Gibson back, as they have begun a youth movement in the rotation, with Jose Berrios, Tyler Duffey and Alex Meyer all currently scheduled to pitch every fifth day. Gibson could still return in mid-May, and a rotation spot will likely be waiting for him, but the situation has become a lot murkier.
Apr 27 2016An MRI on Gibson's shoulder injury showed no structural damage, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. He'll go on a program of exercise and anti-inflammatory medication. "It's just kind of an awkward feeling when I get a ball in my hand," he said. "That's something doctors say should clear up pretty quickly."It sounds like there's a chance he could return in two weeks but an exact timetable isn't known. Still, it doesn't sound like an injury that will keep him out an extended period.
Apr 26 2016Gibson was placed on the DL with a shoulder injury, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.Gibson reported feeling soreness in his shoulder after his last time out when he was knocked around for seven runs over just three innings, and it's apparently enough to sideline him for at least two weeks. An exact timetable remains unclear at this point, but Jose Berrios figures to slot into the rotation with Gibson on the shelf.
Apr 22 2016Gibson allowed seven runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out one while lasting just three innings in an 8-4 loss to the Nationals on Friday night.Gibson (0-3) struggled again, and has posted just one quality start in four outings to date. He was generally throwing strikes (43 strikes on 67 pitches) but he wasn't fooling anyone as his saw his ERA soar to an ugly 6.10 on the season. He'll try to get on track in his next start at home against Cleveland.
Apr 17 2016Gibson allowed just two runs with four strikeouts and two walks across seven innings in Sunday's start against the Angels. He did not factor into the decision. After failing to make it out of the sixth inning in either of his first two outings, Gibson hung on to deliver his first quality start of 2016. He also posted season-lows in walks and hits allowed, as his only real blemish came on a two-run dinger by Albert Pujols in the first inning. A relatively thin pitching staff will require solid outings such as this from Gibson this season, and he will look to deliver versus Washington Friday in his next start.
Apr 6 2016Gibson (0-1) put a dozen men on base -- seven hits and five walks -- in five innings Wednesday, ultimately allowing four runs in a loss to the Orioles.Frankly, he's fortunate to have avoided more damage, as Gibson was unable to work a single clean inning, but escaped without allowing any of Baltimore's rallies to turn into crooked numbers on the scoreboard. Even so, there's no positive way to spin this outing, which is a disappointing start to the regular season after a strong spring. Gibson's pitch-to-contact, high-WHIP tendencies make him a low-end fantasy starter.
Mar 26 2016Gibson threw six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and no walks in a win over Pittsburgh on Saturday, lowering his spring ERA to 1.53 in the process.Gibson's strong spring continues as he has 19 strikeouts in 17.2 innings. He had just a 6.7 K/9 last season, which was a career high in the majors. His spring strikeouts could point to continued improvement in his strikeout rate this season.
Mar 17 2016Gibson gave up one earned run over 3.1 innings with seven strikeouts in Wednesday's spring training win over Boston.Gibson has a 3.68 ERA In three spring starts with a 9:4 K:BB ratio in 7.1 innings. Gibson had just a 6.7 K/9 last season, which was a career high in the majors. He's set with a spot in Minnesota's rotation and his spring outing could show promise of a needed increase in strikeouts.
Oct 3 2015Gibson will not start Sunday, as the Twins were eliminated from the postseason picture Saturday.Ricky Nolasco will instead take the ball in the Twins' final game of the season.
Oct 3 2015Gibson won't start Sunday if the Twins are eliminated Saturday, the Star Tribune's Phil Miller reports. If the Twins lose Saturday their playoff hopes will be dashed, but the team has not yet revealed who would start in place of Gibson in that scenario. Owners in single season leagues with daily roster moves should be prepared to ditch Gibson for another option if the Twins are eliminated Saturday.
Sep 30 2015Gibson (11-11) whiffed nine batters over six shutout innings Wednesday in a win over Cleveland. He allowed four hits and two walks. He still puts too many men on base and doesn't generally strike out enough, but this has been something of a breakout season for Gibson. The Twins have four games left, so it's not impossible that he draws another start on the season's last day if a playoff berth is on the line, but it seems more likely that Gibson's regular season is over. If so, he'll wrap it up with a 3.84 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 145:65 K:BB over 194.2 innings -- not spectacular numbers by any stretch, but still those of a relatively stable mid-rotation starter.
Sep 29 2015Gibson will start Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Indians. The Twins will keep their starters in order following Tuesday's rainout, but Cleveland will flip its starters, meaning Gibson is now set to oppose Carlos Carrasco. Mike Pelfrey and Cody Anderson will follow in Game 2.
Sep 29 2015Gibson will not make his scheduled start Tuesday against the Indians, as the game has been postponed due to rain, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. After a 70-minute delay, the game was called and rescheduled as part of a Wednesday doubleheader. Cleveland will just move Cody Anderson back, and the Twins may very well do the same with Gibson, but they have not announced their starters for the twin bill.
Sep 24 2015Gibson (10-11) was bombarded for six runs on seven hits (two of them homers) in just 2.2 innings against the Indians on Thursday. He managed to record five of his eight outs via whiff, but that's a small silver lining on a dark cloud of a start. Gibson had put together consecutive quality starts prior to Thursday, but his inconsistent control and pitch-to-contact ways have conspired to make him a risky fantasy roll despite an ERA that's been hanging around in the threes nearly all season long. At 3.96 now, it's at its highest point since late April.
Sep 18 2015Gibson will start Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader with the Angels, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.Friday's game was postponed due to rain, and instead of just moving Mike Pelfrey back to start Game 1 of the twin bill, the Twins will start Gibson in Game 1 and Pelfrey in Game 2.
Sep 13 2015Gibson gave up one run over 7.2 innings with seven strikeouts and one walk in Sunday's win over the White Sox.After giving up 16 walks in 34 innings in August. Gibson has better control in September with a 15:6 K:BB ratio in 21.2 innings which has resulted in a 3.39 ERA during the month.
Sep 8 2015Gibson took a complete game loss Tuesday against the Royals as he allowed four runs on six hits and two walks over eight innings. He struck out four.Gibson served up four runs on four hits and two walks in the first inning. He was stellar afterwards, giving up just two hits over seven shutout innings, but the Twins couldn't catch up for him. Still, Gibson has just three quality starts in his past 10 starts and has seen his ERA jump from 2.85 to 3.87 in that span.
Sep 3 2015Gibson allowed three runs on five hits over six innings Thursday against the White Sox, striking out four in a no-decision.He threw 67 strikes versus 30 balls and didn't walk a batter, which is nice, but Gibson also threw a pair of wild pitches. He'd issued 10 free passes in his last three starts, so the control improvement is promising, but Gibson's pitch-to-contact ways and more-than-occasional walk issues make him a mediocre fantasy option at best.
Aug 28 2015Gibson (9-9) was sharp on Friday, as he allowed four hits and three walks across 5.2 scoreless innings while striking out four in a 3-0 win over Houston.Gibson has been quietly effective this season as he now has a 3.82 ERA in 26 starts. The problem for Gibson is his inconsistency, as his last 13 starts have been extremely volatile. In nine of those 13 starts, he has allowed two runs or less while in the other four starts, he has allowed six runs or more. The strikeouts have also been down as of late, as he's only struck out four batters or less in six of his last seven starts. Gibson is hard to trust for standard mixed leagues, but he's a solid streamer in the right spot. Gibson will host the White Sox in his next start on Thursday.
Aug 23 2015Gibson gave up two runs over 5.2 innings with two strikeouts and four walks, but got a no-decision in Saturday's win over Baltimore.Gibson bounced back after giving up six runs in five innings in his last outing at Yankee Stadium and a 7.91 ERA in his previous six starts. However, the four walks are a concern as he has a mediocre 29:16 K:BB ratio in 39 innings since July 21.
Aug 17 2015Gibson was not sharp Monday, allowing six runs in five innings in a no-decision against the Yankees.Gibson has now been roughed up pretty badly in two of his starts this month and four of his last six starts, allowing six runs or more in each of them. He will carry a 3.99 ERA into his start this weekend against the Orioles.
Aug 13 2015Gibson will have his next start pushed back to Monday, the Star Tribune's Phil Miller reports. The Twins will brink Tommy Milone off the DL to start Sunday's game, meaning Gibson's next start will come Monday on the road against the Yankees.
Aug 11 2015Gibson took a no decision in a quality start Tuesday against the Twins, as he allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out seven.Gibson drew 14 swinging strikes and had hitters off balance all night -- other than a 358-foot home run off the bat of Elvis Andrus in the second inning. It's just the fifth time Gibson has struck out at least seven batters in a start all year, and his 6.5 K/9 is well below average. His ERA sits at 3.75.
Aug 7 2015Gibson (8-9) was roughed up for eight runs, nine hits and three walks in 4.2 innings Thursday against the Blue Jays. He struck out four in the loss.Gibson, winless in four starts, matched his career worst, allowing eight runs. He's now given up a total of 21 runs in his past 22 innings over the last four games and has seen his ERA rise from 2.85 to 3.78. The 27-year-old is in a slump, and he'll look to bounce back in his next scheduled start Wednesday against the Rangers.
Jul 26 2015Gibson was shelled in his second straight start Sunday against the Yankees, allowing six runs on six hits and four walks in 5.1 innings. He struck out four.Gibson's only blemish through five innings was a solo home run, but he ran into trouble in the sixth, allowing five runs before being pulled. After six consecutive starts of allowing three earned runs or fewer, the righty has seen his ERA jump to 3.48 with a pair of poor outings. He will look to get back on track Saturday against the Mariners.
Jul 21 2015Gibson took his seventh lost as he served up six runs on 10 hits and a walk over five innings despite six strikeouts Tuesday against the Angels.Gibson was singled to death, as none of the Angels' 10 hits against him went for extra bases. Gibson was coming off four straight quality starts and still owns a solid 3.19 ERA. He went five strong innings before falling apart in the sixth inning in a start that should probably be seen as an aberration in what has been a very solid year.
Jul 13 2015Gibson was excellent Sunday against the Tigers, allowing just one unearned run in seven innings while striking out six to earn his fourth consecutive win.The 27-year-old allowed an early run following a Tigers error, but was able to shut the door the rest of the way as the Twins cruised to a 7-1 victory. Gibson was a pleasant surprise for the Twins as well as fantasy owners in the fist half of the season, with a 2.85 to go along with an 8-6 record. His next start will come after the All-Star break although it has not been scheduled at this time.
Jul 7 2015Gibson gave up two runs on six hits and one walk with seven strikeouts Tuesday against the Orioles. The seven strikeouts were one shy of his season high, and he has now allowed two runs or fewer in each of his last four starts. One of the best things about Gibson's season is that he has gone at least five innings in 16-straight outings, and he has pitched six-plus innings in 12 of those. His FIP (4.18) is naturally much higher than his 3.04 ERA entering play Tuesday, and this is due to a well below-average 15.5 percent K-rate and a fortunate .267 BABIP. Gibson should still be useful in mid-sized leagues over the rest of the season, but now is the time to try to sell high.
Jul 4 2015Gibson will pick up two starts this week, namely Tuesday against the Orioles and Sunday versus the Tigers, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. After a disastrous outing to begin the season -- six earned runs in 3.2 innings -- Gibson has gone to work whittling down his peripherals, recording 10 quality starts in 15 contests in the interim. Overall, he's notched career bests across the board, while striking out a modest 5.81 batters per nine innings.
Jul 3 2015Gibson (6-6) struck out seven and gave up four hits and four walks in eight scoreless innings in a win over the Royals on Thursday.Gibson won his second straight start after having gone a stretch in which he lost three in a row. He lowered his ERA to 3.04, and he'll look to lower it even more when he goes for his third straight win in his next start Wednesday against the Orioles.
Jun 27 2015Gibson won his fifth game of the season Saturday, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk over 6.2 innings, striking out three. He lowered his ERA to 3.30 with the solid outing, but his mediocre 58:29 K:BB ratio in 92.2 innings suggests that Gibson may have a hard time keeping it below 4.00 going forward. His next start comes on Thursday in Kansas City.
Jun 21 2015Gibson was handed his sixth loss of the season Sunday as he allowed two runs on six hits and three walks in five innings against the Cubs. The 27-year-old skated around a number of baserunners in his solid performance but had no chance to earn a win thanks to a dominant Jake Arrieta performance and a Twins bullpen implosion in what turned out to be a 8-0 loss. Gibson still holds a tidy 3.35 ERA through 86 innings and will face the struggling Brewers on Saturday.
Jun 16 2015Gibson held the Cardinals to three runs on six hits over six innings in a losing effort Tuesday afternoon.A rain delay in the seventh inning ensured that his day ended after six frames, but Gibson pitched well enough to keep the Twins in the game against Cards starter Michael Wacha. He'll return home to face the Cubs on Sunday in his next scheduled start.
Jun 11 2015Gibson gave up five runs -- four earned -- on five hits and two walks while striking out six in six innings against the Royals on Wednesday.Gibson had a 2.03 ERA in the five previous starts of his career against the Royals, but was blasted for four runs in the first. His season ERA went up to 3.24 after having gone as low as 2.61 two starts ago. Gibson will look to bounce back in his next scheduled start Tuesday at St. Louis.
Jun 6 2015Gibson gave up five runs over seven innings with nine strikeouts and three walks, but got a no-decision in Friday's loss to Milwaukee.Gibson pitched fairly well, but was victimized by giving up three home runs. He broke a usual pattern where he's typically much better at home (2.35 ERA this season) than the road (3.82 ERA this season).
Jun 3 2015Gibson will start Friday at Boston with Tommy Milone set to be called up to start Thursday, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.Gibson was set to start at Boston on Thursday or Friday after the Twins shuffled their rotation due to a rainout and doubleheader, but the Twins will keep him on regular rest by starting Friday.
Jun 2 2015Gibson will start either Thursday in Boston or Friday against the Brewers, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. The Twins have a doubleheader with the Red Sox on Wednesday, and Ricky Nolasco (ankle) is looking unlikely to make Friday's scheduled start. There is thus a lot of uncertainty for Minnesota's rotation in the upcoming week, making Gibson an option for either Thursday or Friday.
May 30 2015Gibson lasted just 5.2 innings on Saturday, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits and four walks, striking out three. He was able to minimize the damage against him thanks to three double plays, but Gibson struggled to find the plate through the first few innings and ran up his pitch count quickly. He'll look to sharpen his control in his next start on Thursday in Boston.
May 24 2015Gibson tossed a gem against the White Sox on Sunday, allowing just one run and striking out eight across eight innings en route to his fourth win of the year. The 27-year-old has actually been very dependable this season, with a shiny 2.72 ERA through 56.1 innings to go along with a winning record. Gibson's next start is scheduled for Saturday against the Blue Jays.
May 17 2015Gibson gave up three earned runs on eight hits across five innings a loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday.Gibson walked two and struck out two on his way to his third loss of the season. He's now 3-3 with a 2.98 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. He'll toe it up against the White Sox in Chicago in his next start.
May 12 2015Gibson was fantastic yet again Tuesday, giving up one run on five hits and zero walks with six strikeouts over seven innings against the Tigers. He has now given up just one run over his last three starts (21 innings) and has notched quality starts in five of his last six outings. It was his second start of the season where he issued zero walks and the six strikeouts easily marked a season high. In fact, Gibson had just 11 strikeouts over his first six starts of the season entering play Tuesday. So while he has been excellent at preventing runs of late, the 27-year-old righty projects to be well below average at missing bats going forward.
May 7 2015Gibson pitched six scoreless innings, giving up four hits and two walks while striking out one in Wednesday's win over the A's.Gibson (3-2) ran his scoreless streak to 17 innings and the Twins scored 13 runs, resulting in his third win of the season. After giving up six runs in 3.2 innings in his first start of the season, Gibson has bounced back nicely and lowered his ERA to a respectable 2.97. Gibson will take the mound again in his next scheduled start Tuesday at Detroit.
May 1 2015Gibson tossed eight shutout innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out four in a 1-0 win over the White Sox Friday night. Now 2-2 with a 3.56 ERA, Gibson has fared reasonably well so far this season, however his low strikeout rate limits his fantasy potential, and probably also makes him more vulnerable to a poor outing from time to time.
Apr 26 2015Gibson gave up just two runs over seven innings, but got a no-decision Sunday as the Twins beat Seattle in extra innings.Gibson had three strikeouts and three walks as he has just a 6:12 K:BB ratio in 22.1 innings this season. He'll need to strike out more batters to continue to have strong outings like Sunday.
Apr 16 2015Gibson gave up only one run on nine hits and no walks while striking out three in 6.2 innings in a win over the Royals on Wednesday.Gibson, who failed to finish the fourth inning last week at Detroit, improved to 4-0 in four career starts with a 1.38 ERA against Kansas City. He gave up only one run to the highest-scoring team in the majors, and he'll take the mound against them again in his next start Monday.
Apr 9 2015Gibson (0-1) was awful in his first start of the season Thursday, giving up 13 baserunners (eight hits, five walks) and six runs in 3.2 innings against the Tigers. For the icing on the cake, he didn't strike out a single batter. Gibson struggled in his first full MLB campaign last year, and though spring training promised some advancement, Thursday's outing was a big step in the wrong direction. He's scheduled to face the Royals next week; if things are this disastrous again, the Twins are going to have to start taking stock of who in the minors might be ready to come up.
Apr 5 2015Gibson gave up four runs over six innings in his final spring start Saturday. He had missed his scheduled start Monday due to the flu.Gibson didn't pitch well in his final outing, but he looks recovered from the ailment and ready for the regular season. With Ervin Santana's suspension, he'll move up a day and pitch the third game of the season Thursday at Detroit.
Mar 31 2015Gibson (illness) is expected to start the Twins' spring training finale on Saturday, MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger reports.Rather than pitching in a minor-league game, Gibson will wait a few extra days. He should be fine by Opening Day, and his first start will likely come either April 9 in Detroit or April 10 in Chicago.
Mar 30 2015Gibson was scratched from his scheduled spring start Monday due to an illness, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. The ailment isn't thought to be serious and he has more than a week to get ready before his first start of the regular season. He'll likely throw in a minor league game in the next few days when healthy.
Mar 10 2015Gibson gave up one run on three hits in three innings in Tuesday's spring training start with no strikeouts and a walk. Gibson reached 95 mph on his fastball during the start - an increase of more than two mph over what he averaged last season, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. It's just one outing versus a full season average, but his uptick in velocity is worth monitoring since he struggled to miss bats last year. Gibson had a poor strikeout rate last season (4.9 K/9 IP), but he could bounce back since he did average 8.1 K/9 in his career at Triple-A.
Mar 6 2015Gibson gave up one run over two innings with two strikeouts in Thursday's spring training debut. He worked on a new pitch: a changeup to right-handed hitters, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. "That's something I've been working on," Gibson said. "Threw a few more curveballs than normal. That's what spring training is for. Throwing those changeups to righties is something you'll probably be seeing me do a lot in spring training."Gibson's first full season in the majors was an uneven affair as he had a 1.42 ERA in his 13 wins, but a 11.04 ERA in his 12 losses. Gibson's poor strikeout rate (4.9 K/9 IP) limits his upside, but he could improve in his second season and figuring out another pitch to add to his arsenal could help.
Sep 28 2014Gibson surrendered four hits and three earned runs while striking out six and walking three over 7.1 innings versus Detroit on Sunday.Gibson kept his team in the game Sunday, but the Twins offense couldn't get anything going against opposing starter David Price. Gibson closed out the season with two solid outings, but his full body of work this season left a lot to be desired. He finishes with a 4.47 ERA and 1.31 WHIP over 179.1 innings.
Sep 24 2014Gibson pitched seven solid innings, allowing just one run on seven hits with no walks, while striking out eight in a win over the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.Gibson's manic up-and-down season continues as we close out the season. After three previous mediocre starts, where he allowed 15 runs on 21 hits and seven walks in 16 innings, Gibson reversed course with a gem on Tuesday. Gibson now possesses a 4.50 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 101:54 K:BB in 172 innings this year. He will make one more start, which is set for Sunday against the Tigers on the road.
Sep 17 2014Gibson picked up his 12th win of the season after allowing four runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts in six innings versus the Tigers.Gibson's season is trending in the wrong direction, but he was still able to sneak out of this one with a victory. The 26-year-old has gone from a 4.64 ERA in July to 5.19 in August to 8.44 over three September starts. Gibson will take the hill Tuesday against the Diamondbacks.
Sep 12 2014Gibson (11-11) was slammed for seven runs on seven hits and two walks in just three innings Thursday against Cleveland.Gibson's rough start in the afternoon game of Thursday's doubleheader set the Twins' tone for the day, as they ended up getting swept. Although he looked promising at times in the first half of the season and his strikeout rate spiked conspicuously in August, the second half of the year has largely been an unmitigated disaster for Gibson. He has a 5.74 ERA since the All-Star break and has been allowed a particularly ugly 22 runs over 25 innings in his last five starts. Never a strikeout artist, he has a 16:12 K:BB over that span. For now, he remains scheduled to start Tuesday against Detroit, but it wouldn't be surprising to see the Twins shut him down soon, considering the way he's flagged down the stretch.
Sep 10 2014Gibson will not make his scheduled start Wednesday night due to the postponement of Wednesday's game against the Indians. The Twins and Indians will make up Wednesday's game by playing a doubleheader Thursday. Gibson is lined up to start the early game and face off against Indians ace Corey Kluber.
Sep 4 2014Gibson was tagged for four runs on seven hits and two walks over seven innings Thursday against the Angels. He struck out just one batter.Low-strikeout games are normal for Gibson, but he hadn't dipped all the way to one whiff since July 18. He'll seek better results next week against Cleveland.
Aug 30 2014Gibson gave up just one run over five innings with six strikeouts and three walks, but got a no-decision in Sunday's loss to Baltimore.A much needed outing from Gibson as he'd been in a slump in August with a 5.76 ERA in five starts.
Aug 24 2014Gibson gave up eight hits and five earned runs in 4.2 innings against Detroit on Sunday.Gibson, who recorded five strikeouts and four walks in the losing decision, has now struggled mightily in three of his last four starts. As a result, his ERA has risen from 3.93 to 4.31. Gibson faces another tough matchup on Saturday, this time on the road against Baltimore.
Aug 20 2014Gibson pitched just 5.1 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out four batters in picking up a no-decision in Tuesday's game against the Indians. All year long Gibson has battled inconsistency, occasionally twirling gems, but many times tossing in some duds. His performance this year has been that of an EKG graph:up and down. Gibson now has a 4.13 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and a mediocre 78:40 K:BB ratio in 139.1 innings pitched this year. His next start is scheduled for Sunday at home against the Tigers.
Aug 19 2014Gibson gave up five runs over 5.1 innings with four strikeouts and one walk in Tuesday's loss to Cleveland.Gibson was staked to a five-run lead in the first inning and couldn't deliver. He continued a pattern of either being great or terrible in his starts. He's 1-6 with a 12.68 ERA when he goes less than five innings (24 starts) and 10-3 with a 1.88 ERA when he goes more than five innings (16 starts).
Aug 14 2014Gibson held the Astros to one run over 7.2 innings Wednesday, picking up his 11th victory of the season.Manager Ron Gardenhire likely would have been willing to give Gibson a shot at spinning a complete game, but a pair of lightly-hit singles took a shutout off the table and brought his pitch count above 100. That being said, Gibson still delivered one of his more impressive outings of the season, bringing his season ERA below 4.00 in the process. Gibson's poor strikeout rate (4.9 K/9 IP) limits his utility in the fantasy game, but he's been able to yield acceptable results due to a low walk rate and his ability to generate groundouts over half the time the ball is in play.
Aug 8 2014Gibson (10-9) suffered the loss on Friday against the Athletics as he gave up six runs (five earned) on five hits in five innings, while giving away five free passes. It was a five-fecta for Gibson on Friday, which unfortunately was not a good thing for the young pitcher. The walks killed Gibson as he set the stage for Coco Crisp's bases-clearing triple. Gibson, who sees his ERA bump up to 4.13, next takes the mound on Wednesday against the Astros.
Jul 29 2014Gibson (back) has been confirmed as Tuesday's starter against the Royals. The Twins were forced to skip Gibson the last time through the rotation due to back stiffness, but the training staff gave him the green light to return following a successful bullpen session Saturday. He'll oppose right-hander James Shields.
Jul 26 2014Gibson (back) threw a bullpen session Saturday and was declared ready to start Tuesday at Kansas City, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.Gibson was scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday with a sore back, but has made steady progress the past few days.
Jul 25 2014Gibson (back) will throw a bullpen session Saturday and if all goes well, he'll start Tuesday against the Royals, MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger reports. He has been encouraged by his progress in trying to get over the stiff back that plagued him earlier in the week, and all signs point to him starting the Twins' first game next week.
Jul 25 2014Gibson (back) was encouraged by his activity Friday and is confident he will return to the Twins' rotation Tuesday, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. He had a 120-foot long toss session and threw 10-15 pitches in the bullpen Friday, and while he won't make his scheduled start Saturday, he won't be pushed back a full five days, as the Twins have an opening in the rotation Tuesday in Kansas City.
Jul 24 2014Manager Ron Gardenhire indicated that it's unlikely Gibson (back stiffness) will be ready to go for Saturday's scheduled start vs. the White Sox, Tyler Mason of FOX Sports North reports. The Twins haven't made an official call on Saturday's starter, but given the pessimistic news regarding Gibson, look for the team to turn to Triple-A arm Logan Darnell to fill the void. If the team indeed elects to go that route for Saturday's start, Gibson could be placed on the disabled list as a means of facilitating the roster move.
Jul 23 2014The Twins are hopeful Gibson (back stiffness) will be able to take the mound Saturday vs. the White Sox, FOX Sports North's Tyler Mason reports. The Twins are skipping Gibson on Wednesday to give him some time to heal up from the back woes, but if he's not ready to go by Sunday, a trip to the DL will have to be considered. The Twins will try to get by with long reliever Anthony Swarzak making a spot start for Gibson on Wednesday.
Jul 22 2014Gibson is dealing with a stiff back and will not make his scheduled start Wednesday, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.Anthony Swarzak will get the spot start in Gibson's place against the Indians. It's possible, given the holes in Minnesota's rotation, that Gibson could slot in as the starter Saturday against the White Sox, instead of next Tuesday, which is his next scheduled start. Consider him day-to-day until we know more.
Jul 18 2014Gibson mostly struggled through 6.1 innings Friday night, allowing six earned runs, nine hits and a walk while striking out just one in a 6-2 loss to the Rays. The roller coaster ride continues for Gibson here in 2014, as the Twins' right-hander has been close to completely unpredictable from start-to-start this season. Though inconsistent results can often be the case for a pitcher that relies so heavily on forcing weak contact, Gibson has taken things to the extreme. Over his 19 starts, six have been scoreless efforts of six or more innings while seven other outings have seen him surrender at least five earned runs. All in all, Gibson is little more than a middling, back-of-the-rotation starter at this point and difficult to recommend outside of AL-Only format.
Jul 4 2014Gibson lasted just two innings Friday, surrendering six runs (five earned) on six hits and a walk while recording zero strikeouts against the Yankees. This was a very unproductive start by Gibson, as his pitch count after two innings was 52 (33 strikes), and his lack of effectiveness pushed the Twins to the bullpen in the third inning. After stringing together three straight starts of seven innings and no runs allowed, he has now given up 14 earned runs over 12 innings in his last three outings.
Jun 29 2014Gibson allowed two runs over eight innings Sunday against the Rangers, giving up eight hits and no walks while striking out three. That makes for four strong starts in his last five outings, with Tuesday's disaster against the Angels being the outlier. He draws the Yankees at home in his next start.
Jun 25 2014Gibson struggled through two innings on Wednesday, allowing seven runs four hits and two walks.Gibson faced just 13 batters before getting pulled before the third inning after allowing seven runs to score. He was coming off of 22 consecutive scoreless innings, but Gibson has had two sides all season. Wednesday was obviously the bad side of the youngster, but he will try to show the good again in his next scheduled start at Texas on Sunday.
Jun 13 2014Gibson tossed seven shutout innings, allowing five hits, walking two, and striking out three in a 2-0 win over the Tigers on Friday night. Now 6-5 with an improving 3.55 ERA, that's back-to-back shining performances for Gibson who put up seven scoreless innings against the Astros in his most recent outing. He still needs to hone his command (he needed 110 pitches, 66 for strikes to cover the seven innings) and he doesn't provide a lot of strikeouts, but there are indications those could come.
Jun 7 2014Gibson pitched seven scoreless innings en route to his fifth win of the season on Saturday. He allowed just three hits and three walks in the outing while striking out five.Gibson brought his good stuff with him on Saturday, getting 17 swinging strikes on the day. He has been hit-and-miss on the season, but Saturday was definitely another hit for the second-year pitcher. Gibson dropped his ERA below 4.00 with the outing, and will look to build off of it in his next scheduled start against the Tigers on Friday.
Jun 2 2014Gibson took the loss Monday night, allowing four runs in six innings of work against the Brewers.Gibson got off to a fast start this season, but has been erratic after his first three starts. The Twins' hurler has allowed at least four runs in five of his last eight starts. He'll look to right the ship against the Astros this weekend.
May 28 2014Gibson struck out four and did not walk a batter tossing six shutout innings against the Rangers on Wednesday night.Despite throwing a first-pitch strike to just 10 of the 23 batters he faced, Gibson did not issue a free pass in Wednesday's start. Further, he kept the Rangers' offense off-balance, racking up 15 swinging strikes. Gibson continues to pitch heavily to contact (4.7 K/9, 51.8% GB%), making him a particularly risky option in road starts away from the pitcher-friendly confines of Target Field.
May 24 2014Gibson gave up five runs on five hits in five innings against the Giants on Friday night as he took his fourth loss on the season. The night was a rough one for Gibson, who really only got hurt by the long ball giving up homers to Pablo Sandoval and Brandon Hicks. Gibson didn't walk anyone on the night and was getting ahead of the hitters for the most part, so a bit of bad luck pushed his ERA up to 4.68 on the year. Gibson should have better results in his next outing against the Rangers in Minnesota on Wednesday.
May 16 2014Gibson threw seven strong innings, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out four in Friday's 5-4 victory over the Mariners. After last week's six-run drubbing courtesy of the Tigers, Gibson was in need of a bounce back Friday night. Needless to say, the young hurler has to be pleased with this effort. He now stands at 4-3 with a 4.20 ERA for the campaign and is at the very least a decent back end option for those in AL-Only format.
May 10 2014Gibson lasted just two innings in Saturday's start against the Tigers, allowing six runs on seven hits and a walk.Gibson gave up all six runs in the second inning, with the scoring capped by a Miguel Cabrera three-run homer. The young right-hander's fast start has become a distant memory, following three ugly outings in his last four tries. Gibson will try to right the ship Friday against Seattle, and he may soon be pitching for his job.
May 5 2014Gibson did not record a decision Monday against the Indians as he allowed two hits and three walks to go along with one strikeout in seven scoreless innings.Gibson is currently 3-2 with a 3.50 ERA this season, but he only has 16 strikeouts compared to 17 walks. Throw in his 1.39 WHIP and he has limited fantasy value.
Apr 30 2014Gibson gave up nine hits and five runs over 6.2 innings pitched for the loss on Wednesday. After Gibson started off the season so well, he has run into a few hiccups of late raising his ERA to 4.34 on the season.
Apr 29 2014Gibson will take the mound Wednesday against the Dodgers, after his previously scheduled start Tuesday was postponed, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. After three steady starts to begin the season, Gibson yielded seven runs on 10 hits and two free passes, while punching out three in three innings, in his previous outing last Tuesday in Tampa Bay. Meanwhile, his 5.24 K/9 on the season doesn't impress, and his 8.10 ERA and 2.143 WHIP in Target Field make him a starting pitching option to avoid.
Apr 29 2014Gibson's start Tuesday against the Dodgers has been postponed, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.A rain/snow mix is dominating the scene in the Twin Cities, which will push the Dodgers and Twins to play a split doubleheader Thursday. It's unknown if Gibson will have his nod moved back to Wednesday or Thursday, but he nonetheless won't be making his scheduled start Tuesday.
Apr 27 2014Gibson will have his scheduled start pushed back to Tuesday due to Sunday's rainout, Tyler Mason of FOX Sports North reports.Gibson will keep his place in the rotation, with the rest of the starters being pushed back. He'll take the hill Tuesday against the Dodgers instead.
Apr 22 2014Gibson gave up seven earned runs on 10 hits and two walks with three strikeouts in three innings Tuesday against the Rays, picking up his first loss of the season.Gibson had given up just two runs over 19.1 innings in his first three starts of the season. Clearly that stretch wasn't going to continue, but this was a blow up on a level that even Gibson's most pessimistic owners may not have expected. The Rays seemed to have a very good plan of attack at the plate, but Gibson was still able to make several excellent pitches en route to his three strikeouts in as many innings. Understandably, it may take several starts for Gibson to regain his owners' trust, and Sunday's matchup against Justin Verlander and the Tigers doesn't necessarily scream "success."
Apr 17 2014Gibson (3-0) shut down the Blue Jays for eight innings Thursday, allowing just four hits and a walk while striking out four. He's off to an awesome start to the year, having allowed just two runs in 19.1 innings, but it's worth noting that Gibson still only has a 10:9 K:BB on the year. It could be a good time to sell high.
Apr 11 2014Gibson picked up his second victory of the season after working 6.1 innings and giving up just one run on five hits with three strikeouts versus the Royals Friday night.Gibson has gotten off to a great start for the Twins here in the early going of 2014. The 26-year-old hurler has worked 11.1 solid innings over his first two times out this season, allowing just two earned runs on eight hits.
Apr 5 2014Gibson gave up one run on three hits and four walks, while striking out three over five innings, and picked up the win over the Indians on Saturday. While he struggled with his control -- the run against Gibson was scored on a wild pitch -- the right-hander has to be encouraged with this performance, especially after he posted a 6.53 ERA in 10 starts for the big club last season. The 26-year-old allowed four earned runs over 16.1 innings (2.20 ERA) in five appearances (two starts) during spring training.
Mar 28 2014Gibson has officially won the fifth starter role with Scott Diamond sent to Triple-A Rochester, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. He will likley make his first start April 5 at Cleveland. Gibson had a 2.20 ERA this spring, but had just seven strikeouts in 16.1 innings. He had a strong season last year at Triple-A with a 2.92 ERA and 87:33 K:BB ratio in 101.2 innings, but struggled in his first test in the majors with a 6.53 ERA and 29:20 K:BB in 51 innings (5.1 K/9).
Mar 26 2014Gibson threw three shutout innings on two hits with one strikeout in Tuesday's win over Baltimore to lower his spring training ERA to 2.20. He remains the leading candidate for the fifth starter role, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.Gibson and Scott Diamond are still in contention for the fifth starter role, but Diamond has struggled this spring. It would be a surprise if Gibson doesn't win the role at this point.
Mar 21 2014Twins assistant GM Rob Antony said that it's not official that Gibson has won the fifth starter role, MLB.com reports.Antony acknowledged that Samuel Deduno is headed to the bullpen and that Gibson is competing with Scott Diamond. However, it would seem unlikely that Diamond would win the role as he's have a poor spring (5.79 ERA). With Vance Worley sent to Tripe-A, Gibson should win the fifth starter role barring the team making a late trade.
Mar 21 2014Gibson will be the Twins' No. 5 starter to begin the season, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. The Twins placed Vance Worley on waivers on Friday, meaning that Gibson beat out Samuel Deduno and Scott Diamond for the final rotation spot. Gibson posted a 2-4 record with a 5.63 ERA over ten starts in 2013, but has already shown improvement this spring, surrendering four runs over 13.1 innings, and posting a 0.98 WHIP.
Mar 15 2014Gibson gave up three runs over four innings with no strikeouts and two walks in Friday's spring training win over the Yankees. He remains in contention for the fifth starter role, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. "The ball was coming out of his hand with a good angle. I thought he had above average stuff," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said.Gibson has a 3.00 ERA this spring (3 ER in 9 IP) with three strikeouts and no walks. He's battling Samuel Deduno, Scott Diamond and Vance Worley for the fifth starter role. Deduno is the favorite to win the job as Gibson likely needs more time at Triple-A before he gets another shot at the major league rotation after he had a 6.53 ERA and 29:20 K:BB ratio in 51 innings with the Twins last year.
Aug 19 2013Gibson was optioned to Triple-A Rochester on Monday, after a dreadful start against the Mets in which he gave up four runs on 10 hits and two walks, while striking out two in 3.2 innings, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. After notching two wins in his first four MLB starts, Gibson has been held without a win in six consecutive outings. Overall, he posted a 2-4 record, 6.53 ERA, 1.745 WHIP, and 29:20 K:BB ratio in 51 innings during his first cup of coffee. With Gibson struggling late in the season and nearing 150 combined innings between the majors and minor leagues, it's likely he won't return to the majors or may be shut down soon for the season since it's his first full season back from Tommy John surgery.
Aug 14 2013Gibson took a no-decision Wednesday afternoon, allowing three runs over 5.1 innings of work.Gibson hasn't faired well this season, finishing six innings just three times in nine starts. The owner of a 6.27 ERA and 1.63 WHIP, Gibson is currently lined up to pitch against the Mets in a make-up game next week.
Aug 9 2013Gibson took a no-decision in the first game of Friday's doubleheader with the White Sox. He scattered four hits and four walks over 5.2 innings and surrendered three runs. Both Gibson and opposing starter John Danks were victimized by failing to locate their pitches and getting rocked when they did find the strike zone, as Gibson gave up homers to Paul Konerko and Alexei Ramirez. Gibson hasn't seemed to make much progress over his eight starts in the majors, as his ERA with the big club now sits at 6.43. He could be at risk for demotion if his struggles persist.
Aug 3 2013Gibson only lasted three innings against the Astros, allowing four runs on nine hits before exiting. He was spared the loss after the Twins rallied of the Astros' bullpen. He expended 81 pitches on his nine outs, and he had a hard time finding the zone (only 47 of those pitches went for strikes). He only walked one, but he threw too many hittable balls to one of the worst offenses in the AL. This was the first time Gibson failed to go at least five innings in a start, and he should not be in immediate danger of a demotion to Triple-A despite a 6.69 ERA and 1.68 WHIP through 36.1 innings.
Jul 28 2013Gibson fell to 2-3 on the year Sunday as he allowed five earned runs on seven hits over five innings against Seattle.Gibson struggled with his command a bit in this one as he needed 95 pitches (52 strikes) to get through just five innings. He only walked one, but he was pulled due to his high pitch count, coupled with his ineffectiveness. He'll take a 6.21 ERA into his next start against the light-hitting Astros.
Jul 14 2013Gibson was charged with three runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks, while striking out one over five innings, and earned the win over the Yankees on Sunday.Gibson was able to outlast CC Sabathia and pick up the victory, thus knotting up his record on the year at 2-2. It wasn't a great performance, but it was a step in the right direction for the former first-round draft pick, after he'd given up 12 runs in his previous two starts.
Jul 9 2013Gibson gave up four runs on four hits and four walks with three strikeouts in six innings Tuesday, taking the loss against the Rays.Gibson cruised through the first three innings, but walked the first two batters he faced to start the fourth, eventually walking the bases loaded and giving up back-to-back doubles to secure the loss. With just three starts under his belt, the 25-year-old rookie's 7.27 ERA is still greatly affected by his eight-run outing from his last time out against the Yankees, and given his upside, he's still worth monitoring in most formats. However, his last start of the first half will come Sunday in Yankee Stadium, against the same lineup that roughed him up in his second start of the season.
Jul 4 2013Gibson suffered the first loss of his career Thursday when he gave up eight runs and 11 hits in just 5.1 innings against the YankeesGibson obviously didn't have his best stuff, and the bullpen didn't do him any favors, allowing two inherited runners to score in the sixth inning. He made his MLB debut in his last start, and fared much better against the Royals. The young righty will face Tampa Bay in his next scheduled start.
Jun 29 2013Gibson allowed two runs over six innings and was the winning pitcher Saturday against the Royals.Gibson gave up eight hits while walking none and striking out five. For an MLB debut, this was stellar work from the Twins first-round pick in 2009, as he tossed five separate scoreless frames during the performance. The Twins have said they want to limit his workload this season, so do not be surprised if he spends time in the bullpen late in the season or is shut down before the season ends.
Jun 25 2013The Twins called up Gibson from Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday.Gibson will not make his first big league start until Saturday, but the Twins decided to call him up a few days early, likely to give him time to get acquainted with his new teammates and surroundings. Gibson posted a 3.01 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 15 Triple-A starts and is considered one of the top prospects in a loaded system, so he is worth looking at if you are in need of help in the pitching area.
Jun 25 2013The Twins will not have a hard cap on Gibson's innings in his first full season back from Tommy John surgery. "Every guy is a little different, and there's been different numbers from 130 (innings) to 140," Twins assistant general manager Rob Antony told the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "Some people have said 150. I think what we want to do is let him go out and pitch and we'll monitor the situation. That's the best way to go about this thing." Gibson will make his major league debut Saturday against Kansas City.Earlier reports in the offseason had Twins sources pegging Gibson's innings limit at 130 to 150 innings. However, it sounds like that could now be increased by 20 to 30 innings more. Still, the Twins have said they want to limit his workload this season, so there's a risk he's shut down or moved to the bullpen earlier rather than later in the second half of the season - especially if the Twins fall out of the pennant race.
Jun 23 2013Gibson will be called up Tuesday and will start Saturday against the Royals.A first-round pick by the Twins back in 2009, Gibson has gone 3-0 with a 2.08 ERA and a 20:9 K:BB in his last four starts with Triple-A Rochester. He didn't get the call to start in place of Mike Pelfrey (back) Sunday because Gibson had just tossed 106 pitches Thursday, but the 25-year-old will take Pelfrey's next turn in the rotation. Gibson's major league debut on June 29 will come in opposition of right-hander James Shields.
May 21 2013Gibson is a candidate to be called up Friday and start for the Twins, along with Samuel Deduno and P.J. Walters, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.Pedro Hernandez was sent to Triple-A, which opened up a spot in the rotation. Gibson is pitching well at Triple-A with shutouts in two of his last three starts, however, it's not clear if the Twins plan to call him up. It's possible the Twins may want to wait until mid-June to call him up once he's past the time when he could be eligible for Super 2 arbitration status (eligible in his second year in the majors instead of the usual three years).
Apr 5 2013Gibson worked five innings and earned a no-decision in his season debut for Triple-A Rochester, allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts and more importantly no walks. He will be on an innings limit in his first full season since Tommy John surgery in 2011. He should get a taste of the major leagues at some point this season but the control was nice to see following four walks in eight innings during spring training.
Mar 14 2013Gibson was optioned to Triple-A Rochester. It wasn't clear how the Twins wanted to handle Gibson in his first full season back from Tommy John surgery, but now we know he'll begin the year in the minors. The Twins have said he'll be limited to 130 to 140 innings, so he may have a delayed start to his season in the minors. Liam Hendriks and Cole De Vries will compete for the fifth starter role while Gibson is in the minors.
Mar 8 2013Gibson gave up six runs on eight hits over 2.1 innings in Thursday's spring training win over the Phillies. He's given up seven runs in six innings this spring, but does have a 6:2 K:BB ratio. It was an ugly outing for Gibson, but it probably doesn't hurt his chances too much at making the starting rotation since it's early in spring training. Minnesota's plans for Gibson are unclear at this point since the Twins said he'll be limited to 130 to 140 innings in his first full season back from Tommy John surgery. It's likely he'll begin the season in the rotation and then be shut down during the season, but a poor spring could cause him to begin the season in the minors or extended spring training.
Mar 3 2013Gibson gave up one run over 1.2 innings with three strikeouts and one walk in Saturday's spring game. He was hitting 92 mph on his fastball after hitting 95 mph in his first outing, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. The Twins have said Gibson will be limited at 130 to 140 innings this year in his first full season back from Tommy John surgery. It sounds like he'll begin the season in the rotation and be shut down at some point during the season, but Minnesota's plans for Gibson remain vague. However, he looks healthy for the start of the season.
