May 28 2024The Diamondbacks released Wong on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's not clear whether this was the Diamondbacks' decision or an opt-out situation, but either way Wong is now a free agent. The veteran second baseman slashed .271/.339/.383 with two home runs and two stolen bases over 31 games during his time with Triple-A Reno.
Apr 10 2024Wong signed a minor-league contract with the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, Sam Dykstra of MiLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong was cut by the Orioles ahead of Opening Day after batting just .185 during spring training. He'll now attempt to carve out a role for himself with the Diamondbacks, but Wong will likely need to re-establish himself in Triple-A first after slashing .183/.256/.263 in the majors last season.
Mar 24 2024Wong was granted his release by the Orioles on Sunday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Orioles had two days to either release Wong or add him to the big-league roster after he exercised the opt-out in his minor-league contract Friday, and the club has now made its decision. The veteran second baseman posted a .519 OPS between the Mariners and Dodgers last season and hit .185 during spring training, so he's unlikely to find much in the form of guaranteed big-league opportunities with Opening Day less than a week away.
Mar 22 2024Wong exercised the opt out in his minor-league contract Friday, giving the Orioles two days to either release him or add him to the big-league roster, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran second baseman didn't appear to have much of a chance to crack Baltimore's Opening Day roster after signing as a non-roster invitee in February, but he's apparently still in the mix after the club reassigned top prospect Jackson Holliday to minor-league camp Friday. Wong didn't exactly put his best foot forward during spring training and had a .587 OPS in 31 plate appearances, which is only marginally better than last season's .183/.256/.263 slash line.
Feb 28 2024Wong agreed to a minor-league contract with the Orioles on Wednesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Danielle Allentuck of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Orioles are already flush with infield depth, but Wong will do his best to convince them he's worthy of a spot on their Opening Day roster. Wong posted an ugly .183/.256/.263 batting line in 87 games between the Mariners and Dodgers last season but did have an .853 OPS at the latter stop.
Oct 7 2023Wong is listed on the Dodgers' roster for the NL Divisional Series, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong has gone 9-for-30 with two homers and eight RBI since being picked up by Los Angeles in August. He likely won't get many starting reps in the postseason behind Mookie Betts, but he's emerged as a solid pinch hit option off the bench.
Sep 28 2023Wong went 3-for-3 off the bench in Thursday's 14-5 loss to the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mookie Betts was taken out of the game once the Dodgers fell far behind, and Wong stepped up to lead the team in hits despite not starting the contest. Wong has two multi-hit efforts over his last three games, but those are his only such games since joining the Dodgers. He's slashing .186/.259/.267 through 85 contests between Los Angeles and Seattle, though he's at a .333/.387/.556 slash line in a limited sample (31 plate appearances) with the Dodgers.
Sep 13 2023Wong went hit a solo home run in his only at-bat in Wednesday's 6-1 loss to the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong didn't start the game, but the Dodgers subbed out Mookie Betts late in the game. Wong ended up getting an at-bat in the ninth inning and broke up the Padres' shutout with his solo shot, his second homer and third hit over eight games with the Dodgers. The second baseman is at a .170/.245/.257 slash line with four homers, 24 RBI, 23 runs scored and three stolen bases over 229 plate appearances between the Dodgers and the Mariners this season.
Sep 10 2023Wong went 1-for-4 with an RBI and two stolen bases in Saturday's 7-6 extra-innings loss to the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The second baseman nearly played hero for the Dodgers, singling home James Outman in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game at 5-5 and then swiping second and third, only to be stranded when Will Smith grounded out. It was only Wong's second start since being picked up by Los Angeles, but he's appeared in four other September games as a pinch hitter and late-inning defensive replacement, going 2-for-11 overall with a homer, four RBI and Saturday's two steals.
Sep 1 2023Wong hit a three-run home run as a pinch hitter in Friday's 6-3 loss to Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong hit for Freddie Freeman in the eighth inning, and the former got his Dodgers career started with a bang to get them on the board. Prior to signing a minor-league deal in August, Wong mustered an abysmal .468 OPS with the Mariners over 67 games. With Los Angeles, he figures to be little more than a part-time player, though his solid defensive reputation may lead to him coming off the bench as a late-game replacement more often than not.
Aug 18 2023Wong signed a minor-league contract with the Dodgers on Friday, Bruce Kuntz of Dodgers Digest reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong was released by the Mariners earlier this month after managing a lowly .165/.241/.227 batting line across 216 plate appearances. His defense at second base has also fallen off, although it's reasonable to believe he could at least rebound in that area. The Dodgers would be responsible only for the prorated veteran minimum salary should Wong eventually be added to the big-league roster, but he'll presumably go to Triple-A Oklahoma City for now.
Aug 4 2023Wong passed through waivers unclaimed and was released by the Mariners on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong was designated for assignment by Seattle on Tuesday after slashing just .165/.241/.227 with eight extra-base hits (two homers, six doubles) through 216 plate appearances this season. His defense at second base has fallen off a bit as well, but the Mariners are on the hook for the large majority of what remains on his $10 million salary for 2023 and he should be able to find a fresh opportunity with a different organization.
Aug 1 2023Wong was designated for assignment by the Mariners on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran second baseman was acquired from the Brewers over the winter but never got things going with the Mariners this year. Wong has a .165/.241/.227 slash line in 67 games, and he could go unclaimed on the waiver wire given what remains of his $10 million salary for this year.
Jul 28 2023Wong is not in the lineup Friday versus the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jose Caballero will get the start at second base with the Mariners facing left-hander Tommy Henry. Wong has played a little better lately, but he's just 3-for-26 (.115) with zero extra-base hits this year against southpaws.
Jul 26 2023Wong will start at second base and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As of last week, Wong appeared to be on the outs for a regular role at the keystone, but he'll pick up his fourth start in five games Wednesday and has seemingly re-emerged as the Mariners' preferred option at the position for now. Wong probalby won't have a long leash atop the depth chart, however, given that his .474 OPS on the season places him last among all hitters in baseball with at least 200 plate appearances.
Jul 24 2023Wong hit a two-run homer as a pinch hitter in Monday's extra-inning loss to Minnesota. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong didn't start the contest, but he provided the biggest highlight of the contest for Seattle, slugging a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning to give the team a one-run lead. The dramatic blast went for naught, however, as the Twins tied the game in the bottom of the frame and won it in the 10th. The big blast was a rare positive moment for Wong amidst a disappointing season during which he's slashed a meager .162/.244/.229 with just two homers and 18 RBI over 201 plate appearances.
Jul 21 2023Wong is on the bench for Friday's game against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jose Caballero will get the start at second base and bat ninth as the Mariners take on left-hander Yusei Kikuchi. Wong carries a brutal .158/.240/.211 overall season slash line and he's posted just a .274 OPS versus southpaws.
Jul 18 2023Wong is not in the starting lineup Tuesday against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong will remain on the bench for a second straight game Tuesday. Jose Caballero will draw another start at second base and bat ninth against Minnesota.
Jul 17 2023Wong is absent from the lineup for Monday's game versus the Twins, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong had started each of the last four games at second base versus right-handers, but he'll begin this one on the bench as the Twins start Sonny Gray. Jose Caballero will be at the keystone.
Jul 9 2023Wong is starting at second base and batting ninth Sunday against the Astros, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's the 32-year-old's fifth start in the past seven games and his 13th in the past 20 contests. Wong has an atrocious .470 OPS for the year and just a .606 OPS since June 18, but he's still seen an uptick in playing time with Jose Caballero also scuffling.
Jul 8 2023Wong went 2-for-3 with an RBI single, a run-scoring double, two walks and a run in a win over the Astros on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong put together what was arguably his best offensive performance of the season, partnering with No. 8 hitter Mike Ford to wreak plenty of havoc out of the bottom of the order. The veteran second baseman continues to see semi-regular playing time, but even with Friday's stellar night, he's still carrying an abysmal .166/.253/.217 slash line across 178 plate appearances.
Jun 23 2023Wong went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in a win over the Yankees on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong's 384-foot laser in the second inning marked his first time leaving the yard since a three-homer game with the Brewers on Sept. 22 last season. The veteran was hitting just .074 (3-for-27) over his previous 11 games before Thursday's breakout, and the multi-hit effort was just his fifth of the season. Wong's .167/.259/.214 slash line is far below his career standards and is the overriding reason for his increasingly sporadic playing time.
Jun 12 2023Wong is not in the starting lineup Monday versus the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong will be on the bench for a fourth straight game Monday as the Mariners face off with left-hander Jesus Luzardo on the mound. It's unclear if he's lost his grip on the starting role at second base or not considering he typically sits versus lefties, but four straight absences is alarming. Jose Caballero will draw another start at second base and bat ninth in the series opener with Miami.
Jun 11 2023Wong is not in the starting lineup Sunday versus the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong will remain on the bench for a third game in a row and may be losing his grip on the starting spot at second base. Jose Caballero will draw the start Sunday and bat ninth in the rubber match with Los Angeles.
Jun 10 2023Wong is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As per usual, Wong will not be in the starting lineup with a left-hander on the mound, and in this case it's Patrick Sandoval for the Angels. Dylan Moore will get the start at second base and hit seventh against Sandoval and the Halos.
Jun 9 2023Wong is not in the lineup Friday against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong had drawn three straight starts at second base for the Mariners, but he'll give way Friday to Jose Caballero. Wong, 32, carries a paltry .153/.246/.178 batting line through 41 games (134 plate appearances) this season.
Jun 7 2023Wong will start at second base and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though he's slashing just .079/.186/.105 over the past month, Wong will pick up a third consecutive start at second base. Meanwhile, rookie Jose Caballero is on the bench for the second straight contest while he endures a slump of his own. Caballero appeared to have supplanted Wong as the Mariners' primary second baseman earlier in the season, but with both now struggling to produce at the dish, manager Scott Servais may prefer to have the veteran and two-time Gold Glove Award winner at the keystone.
May 31 2023Wong is starting at second base and batting ninth Wednesday versus the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's the first start since Saturday for Wong, who has been ceding most of the playing time at second base to Jose Caballero of late. He'll be going up against Clarke Schmidt.
May 27 2023Wong went 0-for-2 with two walks and two runs in a loss to the Pirates on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran infielder worked out of the bottom of the order, teeing up Julio Rodriguez and J.P. Crawford for RBI opportunities in the fifth and seventh innings, respectively. Wong's start was only his fourth since May 15 and once again came as a result of an off day for the productive Jose Caballero, who's occasionally been given a seat against right-handed pitching. Wong's still slashing an abysmal .167/.259/.196 across 116 plate appearances.
May 19 2023Wong is not in the Mariners' starting lineup for Friday's game in Atlanta, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It marks two games in a row that Wong has been on the bench in favor of Jose Caballero against a right-hander, as it looks like the former is seeing his long-side platoon role slip away. Wong is batting just .177/.259/.231 on the season and hasn't been sharp defensively, either.
May 17 2023Wong is out of the starting lineup Wednesday against the Red Sox, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong went 1-for-5 while making an error and also allowing a weak pop-up to fall in for a hit during Tuesday's 9-4 loss. He'll retreat to the bench for Wednesday's finale, even though he holds the platoon advantage with right-hander Brayan Bello on the mound for Boston. Jose Caballero will hit ninth and play second base in Wong's stead.
May 14 2023Wong is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong will once again head to the bench with a left-hander, Joey Wentz, pitching for Detroit. The 32-year-old remains in the strong side of a platoon at second base, with Jose Caballero filling the short side and batting seventh Sunday.
May 9 2023Wong is out of the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against Texas. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong will take a seat on the bench with southpaw Andrew Heaney on the hill for the Rangers. Sam Haggerty will handle second base and hit ninth in Wong's absence.
May 8 2023Wong (wrist) is starting at second base and batting ninth Monday against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong wasn't listed in Seattle's initial starting lineup, but he was added to the card after J.P. Crawford was announced out shortly before first pitch. Wong is 3-for-9 with a double and five RBI through three games in May.
May 7 2023Wong (wrist) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Wong will take a seat for the series finale after he injured his left wrist in Saturday's 7-5 win, X-rays returned negative and the 32-year-old believes he'll be good to go after a couple days of treatment and some extra taping on the wrist, per Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times. Jose Caballero will step in for Wong at the keystone Sunday.
May 6 2023Wong (wrist) underwent X-rays that came back negative Saturday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong was forced to exit Saturday's win over the Astros in the fifth inning after he landed on his left wrist awkwardly diving for a ground ball, but the postgame imaging is a good sign moving forward. Manager Scott Servais said after the contest that Wong is considered day-to-day heading into Sunday's series finale with Houston. Jose Caballero replaced him in Saturday's contest and could draw a start at second base Sunday.
May 5 2023Wong went 2-for-4 with a go-ahead two-run single in a win over the Athletics on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Highlights at the plate have been relatively rare for the veteran infielder thus far this season, but Thursday's two-run knock in the fourth inning was certainly one. The single snapped a 3-3 tie and would actually close out the scoring on the afternoon for either squad while pushing Wong's average over his last six games to a blistering .429 (9-for-21).
May 3 2023Wong is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Athletics, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong continues to not play against left-handed pitching, and the veteran infielder will begin Wednesday's game against the Athletics on the bench with JP Sears on the mound for Oakland. Jose Caballero is hitting eighth and playing in second base in Wong's place.
May 2 2023Wong is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Athletics, Chen reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong normally sits against southpaws, but in this case the veteran second baseman will begin Tuesday's contest on the bench against right-hander Mason Miller. Jose Caballeros gets the start at second base and will hit eighth.
Apr 27 2023Wong is absent from the Mariners' lineup for Thursday's contest in Philadelphia, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong has yet to make a start against a left-hander this season and will be on the bench for this one against Phillies southpaw Matt Strahm. Jose Caballero will be at second base Thursday for the Mariners.
Apr 4 2023Wong isn't in the Mariners' lineup ahead of Tuesday's matchup with the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty-hitting Wong will take a seat against the lefty-throwing Jose Suarez after starting just 1-for-13 at the plate this season through four games. Sam Haggerty will once again fill in at second base and bat seventh.
Apr 3 2023Wong is absent from the Mariners' lineup Monday against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He's off to a 1-for-13 start at the Angels have lefty Reid Detmers on the mound, so it makes sense to give Wong a breather in this one. Sam Haggerty will handle second base.
Apr 1 2023Wong went 1-for-4 with an RBI single, a walk and a run scored in a loss to the Guardians on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong and Julio Rodriguez kick-started the night for the Mariners in the opening frame, with the former's single bringing home the latter to give Seattle the early 1-0 lead. Wong also got on base via a walk in his next plate appearance and crossed the plate courtesy of Cal Raleigh's two-run double, making it a reasonably productive night for Wong following an 0-for-3 showing on Opening Day that included a hit-by-pitch and a run. The veteran second baseman should once again profile as a high-contact, frequent on-base presence with decent pop in 2023.
Mar 13 2023Wong went into Monday's Cactus League matchup against the Angels hitting .185 (5-for-27) with a double, a walk, a stolen base and two runs across 10 spring training games. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran trade acquisition has struck out an acceptable six times over 28 plate appearances, so it's possible he's also been on the wrong side of luck on at least a handful of occasions when putting the ball in play. Wong slugged a career-best 15 homers for the Brewers in 2021 while also posting his highest strikeout rate (17.7 percent) since his rookie 2013 campaign, but he still remains a highly reliable contact hitter with some solid pop that's proven capable of 40-plus extra-base hits on multiple occasions throughout his long career.
Dec 2 2022Wong was traded to the Mariners from the Brewers on Friday in exchange for Jesse Winker and Abraham Toro, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong will almost certainly serve as Seattle's everyday second-baseman in 2023 after Adam Frazier became a free agent this offseason. Wong slashed .251/.339/.430 last season while playing his home games in hitter-friendly American Family Field. Seattle's Safeco Field has a reputation for favoring pitchers, so it's possible his output in 2023 will decline as a result.
Nov 8 2022The Brewers picked up Wong's $10 million club option for 2023 on Tuesday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong has enjoyed some of his most productive seasons from the plate since signing with the Brewers in 2021, slashing .262/.337/.439 over the past two seasons. Barring a major drop-off in those numbers, Wong figures to resume his role as Milwaukee's everyday second baseman in 2023.
Oct 5 2022Wong isn't starting Wednesday against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Although right-hander Merrill Kelly is starting for Arizona on Wednesday, Wong will be on the bench for the second time in the last three games. Luis Urias will start at the keystone and bat cleanup.
Oct 3 2022Wong isn't in the lineup Monday against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After going 2-for-4 with and an RBI on Sunday, Wong will sit out against southpaw Tommy Henry. Luis Urias will take over at second base in his place and bat sixth.
Sep 29 2022Wong isn't starting Thursday against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Brewers are facing a left-handed pitcher (Braxton Garrett) for a second consecutive game, so Wong will head to the bench once again. Luis Urias will shift to the keystone while Mike Brosseau starts at third base.
Sep 28 2022Wong is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Brewers are rolling out a righty-heavy lineup to counter Cardinals southpaw Jose Quintana, so the lefty-hitting Wong will head to the bench for the series finale. Luis Urias checks in at the keystone for Wong.
Sep 25 2022Wong is out of the lineup for Sunday's game at Cincinnati. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong has a 1.010 OPS with four home runs, nine RBI, seven runs and two stolen bases in his past 12 games, but he'll head to the bench Sunday with southpaw Nick Lodolo pitching for the Reds. Luis Urias will step in at the keystone and bat sixth in the series finale.
Sep 23 2022Wong went 2-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base in Friday's 5-3 over the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong followed up Thursday's three-homer outburst with another multi-hit effort. He's knocked multiple hits in four of his last six games, raising his season slash line to .254/.336/.440 through 469 plate appearances. Wong has swiped 16 bags in 21 attempts while scoring 63 runs this year.
Sep 18 2022Wong went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer, a double, a walk and a strikeout during Sunday's 12-8 loss to the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong went just 1-for-8 with two strikeouts over the first two games of the Brewers' weekend series against the Yankees, but he set the tone for Sunday's series finale with his three-run blast with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. The 31-year-old's performance marked the first time that he's recorded an extra-base hit since Aug. 30, and he's slashed just .225/.326/.325 with three runs, three RBI and two stolen bases since the start of September.
Sep 13 2022Wong went 1-for-2 with a stolen base and a run scored in Tuesday's 8-4 win over the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong singled, stole second and scored in the eighth inning after entering the game in the sixth as a pinch hitter. The second baseman is up to 15 steals this year, his highest total since he swiped 24 bags in 2019. He's up to a .247/.332/.413 slash line with 11 home runs, 37 RBI and 57 runs scored through 115 games, though it appears the lefty hitter has slipped into a platoon role at the keystone late in the year.
Sep 10 2022Wong (knee) went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts in Saturday's 5-1 win over the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong missed four games with left knee discomfort, and he wasn't able to make much of an impact in his return. He's gone 2-for-19 with five strikeouts through seven games this month, though the slump has yet to cost him the starting role at second base. The 31-year-old is slashing .245/.332/.414 with 11 home runs, 14 stolen bases, 37 RBI and 56 runs scored through 113 contests.
Sep 9 2022Wong (knee) remains on the bench Friday against the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong exited Tuesday's game against Colorado with left knee discomfort and hasn't appeared since then. Luis Urias will again handle second base Friday, with Mike Brosseau starting at third.
Sep 8 2022Wong (knee) isn't starting the second game of Thursday's doubleheader against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong sat out the first game of Thursday's twin bill and will remain on the bench for the nightcap as he continues to deal with left knee discomfort. Luis Urias is starting at the keystone and batting eighth.
Sep 7 2022Wong (knee) is not in the starting lineup Wednesday versus the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong left Tuesday's game early with left knee discomfort and will now miss at least one game while nursing the injury. With left-hander Kyle Freeland on the mound, it's possible that he would have been absent from the lineup regardless. Keston Hiura will replace him at second base and bat sixth in the series finale.
Sep 6 2022Wong was removed from Tuesday's game in Colorado with left knee discomfort, Sophia Minnaert of Bally Sports Wisconsin reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong went 0-for-3 before being lifted with the injury during the sixth inning. The 31-year-old is likely to be held out of the lineup for Wednesday's series finale regardless of the injury since lefty Kyle Freeland is scheduled to start for the Rockies.
Sep 3 2022Wong isn't starting Saturday against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong started the last seven games and slashed .370/.433/.815 with three home runs, three doubles, five runs and five RBI. However, he'll get a day off while Luis Urias starts at the keystone and bats cleanup.
Aug 31 2022Wong went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, a double and a walk in a 4-2 loss to the Pirates on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong belted a two-run shot off Mitch Keller for his third home run over the past four games. After having hit only eight home runs through Aug. 27, Wong has now has quickly increased his total to 11. The second baseman has been incredibly hot as of late. He is slashing .500/.591/1.167 over the past seven days. Wong's career slugging percentage is .397 over 1,074 games played.
Aug 29 2022Wong went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run and two doubles in a 9-7 win over the Cubs on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong reached two milestone statistical totals with his three-hit performance. The 31-year-old second baseman reached double-digit home runs and 20 doubles for the third time in his career. Wong is slashing a respectable .249/.331/.420, which is good for a 1.8 Baseball-Reference WAR. He has hit two home runs over his past two games, and if he can hit four more home runs this season he would match his career high of 14.
Aug 28 2022Wong went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored in Saturday's 7-0 victory over the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong scored on Christian Yelich's homer in the seventh inning, then hit a homer of his own in the eighth. Wong now has nine home runs on the season, although his last one came Aug. 2. Wong has seen his batting average drop from .257 to .243 this month after going 14-for-64 with 16 strikeouts. He has swiped two bags this month, but he will need to do more to stay fantasy relevant.
Aug 26 2022Wong isn't starting Friday against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong started against left-handed pitchers during two of the last three games but will take a seat with southpaw Justin Steele on the mound for the Cubs. Keston Hiura is starting at second base and batting sixth.
Aug 21 2022Wong is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With the Cubs bringing a southpaw (Justin Steele) to the mound for a day game, Brewers skipper Craig Counsell viewed it as a good time to give the lefty-hitting Wong a rest. Luis Urias will slide over from third base to replace Wong at second base.
Aug 15 2022Wong isn't starting Monday against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong will retreat to the bench for the third time in the last five games since left-hander Julio Urias is on the mound for the Dodgers. Luis Urias is shifting to second base while Mike Brosseau starts at the hot corner.
Aug 12 2022Wong isn't starting Friday against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Left-hander Jordan Montgomery is on the mound for St. Louis on Friday, so Wong will head to the bench for the second time in the last three games. Luis Urias will shift to second base while Mike Brosseau starts at third.
Aug 10 2022Wong isn't starting Wednesday against Tampa Bay. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong went 1-for-7 with a double, two RBI, a walk and two strikeouts over the last two games but will get a breather against left-hander Jeffrey Springs on Wednesday. Luis Urias is shifting to second base while Mike Brosseau starts at the hot corner.
Aug 3 2022Wong went 3-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 5-3 loss against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong put the Brewers up 3-0 after his solo shot in the sixth inning followed home runs from Willy Adames and Rowdy Tellez. It was Wong's eighth homer of the year. The second baseman has been on fire since July 26, extending his hit streak to six games since then. During that time frame, Wong has gone 10-for-20 with three multi-hit performances and has raised his batting average from .242 to .257.
Jul 31 2022Wong went 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, a run and an RBI in Saturday's 9-4 win over the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong will take a three-game double streak into the series finale Sunday, when he'll start at second base and bat fifth. The 31-year-old has been on fire coming out of the All-Star break, slashing .429/.485/.679 with five extra-base knocks (one home run, four doubles), 10 runs, three RBI and a stolen base in eight games.
Jul 27 2022Wong went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs and a walk in Tuesday's victory over the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong went through a 3-for-27 (.111) slump to close out the first half, but he has come out of the break hot, going 8-for-18 (.444) over five games. Wong owns a woeful .391 OPS against southpaws this season, but he has been handling righties, posting an .802 OPS against pitchers who throw with that hand.
Jul 14 2022Wong isn't in the lineup Thursday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong is in the midst of a slump at the plate in which he's gone 0-for-14 with a strikeout over the last four games, and he'll take a seat with left-hander Carlos Rodon on the mound for the Giants. Luis Urias is starting at the keystone while Mike Brosseau takes over at third base.
Jul 10 2022Wong is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty-hitting Wong will head to the bench with southpaw Jose Quintana on the. bump for Pittsburgh. Luis Urias slides over from his usual post at third base to replace Wong at the keystone.
Jul 9 2022Wong went 2-for-2 with an RBI triple, two runs scored and a stolen base in a 4-3 win over the Pirates on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong's stolen base gives him 10 on the season. He has now had double-digit stolen bases five times in his career. The 31-year-old veteran is putting up numbers very close to his career averages this season with a pedestrian .242/.332/.417 slash line through 62 games played.
Jul 4 2022Wong is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong has really struggled against left-handers this season, posting just a .349 OPS over 54 plate appearances, so he will get a day off with left-hander Justin Steele on the bump for the opponent. Luis Urias will cover the keystone in Wong's place.
Jun 29 2022Wong is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong made his return from a stint on the injured list due to a calf issue in Tuesday's 5-3 win, starting at second base while going 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and two runs. He should serve as Milwaukee's primary option at the keystone moving forward, though the lefty-hitting Wong will occasionally take a seat against left-handed starting pitchers. With southpaw Jalen Beeks on the hill for Tampa Bay in a day game after a night game, manager Craig Counsell decided it was a good opportunity to rest Wong.
Jun 28 2022Wong (calf) went 1-for-3 with two runs scored, a double and a walk in a 5-3 win Tuesday in Tampa Bay. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In his first game since June 7, Wong doubled and scored in the sixth and walked and scored in the eighth. Jun 25 2022Wong (calf) is expected to be reinstated from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong will begin a rehab assignment at High-A Wisconsin on Saturday, and he's expected to appear in two minor-league games prior to joining the Brewers to begin their series in Tampa. The 31-year-old hasn't played for the Brewers since June 7 but will reclaim his role as the team's primary second baseman once he's ultimately activated.
Jun 24 2022Wong (calf) will begin a minor-league rehab assignment this weekend, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong suffered a setback with his strained right calf last weekend, but it apparently wasn't major issue as he's now been cleared for game action. The 31-year-old has been sidelined by the injury since June 7, so he should be ready to reinstated from the injured list sometime next week after appearing in a few games in the minors.
Jun 23 2022Wong (calf) was spotted Thursday taking part in agility drills in the outfield, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The activity is another minor step forward for Wong, who was seen swinging a bat in the cage earlier this week but has yet to advance to on-field batting practice or running the bases since landing on the injured list June 11 with a right calf strain. Wong is without a clear timeline for a return and is unlikely to make it back from the IL before the end of the month.
Jun 21 2022Wong (calf) took some swings in the cage Tuesday but isn't expected to resuming hitting or running on the field during the current series against the Cardinals, which ends Thursday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran second baseman suffered a setback in his recovery from a strained right calf over the weekend, and he's essentially "starting the process over," per McCalvy. Wong is already eligible to return from the 10-day injured list, but he's likely to be sidelined for at least another week.
Jun 18 2022Wong (calf) suffered a setback in his recovery and won't be activated by the start of the Brewers' upcoming homestead against the Cardinals that begins Monday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong initially hoped to return from the 10-day injured list as early as Saturday, but he'll be unable to do so following his setback. It's not yet clear when the 31-year-old will be able to return to game action, but Luis Urias should continue to see most of the playing time at second base while Jace Peterson sees additional playing time at the hot corner in Wong's absence.
Jun 14 2022Wong (calf) hopes to return from the 10-day injured list when first eligible Saturday, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran second baseman has been unavailable due to calf soreness since June 7, but he expects to spend only the 10-day minimum on the shelf. Luis Urias has seen most of the action at second base with Wong sidelined, with Jace Peterson operating as the primary third baseman.
Jun 11 2022Wong was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a right calf strain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong has not played since leaving Tuesday's game with a sore calf, and the Brewers ultimately decided to place him on the injured list to free up a roster spot. The move was backdated to Wednesday, so he will be eligible to be activated June 18.

Jun 8 2022Wong (calf) isn't starting Wednesday against the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong exited Tuesday's game against Philadelphia due to right calf discomfort, and he'll be out of the lineup for at least one matchup. It's not yet clear whether he'll be available off the bench, but Luis Urias will shift to second base while Jace Peterson starts at the hot corner Wednesday.
Jun 7 2022Wong was removed from Tuesday's game against the Phillies with right calf discomfort, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong went 0-for-1 before being replaced in the field for the top of the fourth inning. The 31-year-old missed one game last week after being hit by a pitch in the right calf, and it appears he's still having some issues in that area.
Jun 5 2022Wong went 2-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI in Sunday's 6-4 extra-inning loss to the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong started the bottom of the first inning with a solo shot, and he added a game-tying two-run blast in the eighth. The second baseman hadn't homered since May 15, picking up just two doubles and a triple among 11 hits in 18 games since then prior to Sunday. He's up to a .229/.322/.391 slash line with five homers, 17 RBI, 26 runs scored, eight stolen bases, eight doubles and three triples through 51 contests. Wong continues to bat leadoff regularly versus right-handed pitchers, though he also sees a fair amount of playing time deeper down the lineup versus lefties.
Jun 1 2022Wong (calf) is starting at second base and batting leadoff Wednesday against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran second baseman sat out Tuesday's contest after being hit by a pitch in the right calf during Monday's nightcap, but his quick return to the lineup confirms the injury to be a minor issue. Wong finished May on a cold streak, going 6-for-35 with a double, five walks and two runs in his last 10 games.
May 31 2022Wong is dealing with a right calf injury and is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Cubs, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong suffered the injury when he was hit by a pitch during Game 2 of Monday's doubleheader, and he'll sit out Tuesday while receiving treatment. The 31-year-old hopes to be back in the lineup for Wednesday's series finale, so the injury doesn't appear to be a serious concern. Keston Hiura will man the keystone in Wong's place.
May 30 2022Wong isn't in the lineup for the second game of Monday's doubleheader against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong led off in Monday's matinee and went 1-for-3 with a double, a run, a walk and a strikeout. Mark Mathias will take over at the keystone and bat eighth.

Luis Urias will shift to the keystone while Mike Brosseau starts at the hot corner.
May 13 2022Wong went 1-for-4 with a solo homer Friday against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong led off the game with a homer to right field against Pablo Lopez, which would be all the Brewers would manage until they scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth to win 2-1. The homer was just Wong's second of the season.
May 11 2022Wong went 0-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and a stolen base in Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Reds. After a slow start to the season, the second baseman has notched a hit in six of his last seven games, batting .346 with four extra-base hits, seven runs and four RBI over that stretch. May 3 2022Wong went 2-for-2 with a walk, a double, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base in Tuesday's win over the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The second baseman is still looking for his first home run this season, but he's propped himself up in the rotisserie game with his four steals to date. That matches the number of walks he's drawn in 2022. Wong is still leading off for Milwaukee against right-handed pitching despite a .271 OBP.
Apr 30 2022Wong will be on the bench Saturday against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong sits for just the third time this season. Keston Hiura will get the start at second base.
Apr 26 2022Wong went 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base in Tuesday's win over the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The overall numbers for Wong are still ugly, but he did a nice job setting the table in this one. Manager Craig Counsell seems committed to Wong as his leadoff man against right-handed pitching. Wong could probably use a few more performances like Tuesday's to secure his spot atop the order, although it's not like the Brewers have a lot of hitters forcing the issue.
Apr 24 2022Wong is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong started the past nine games but will take a seat Sunday while mired in a 2-for-20 slump. Keston Hiura will start at the keystone against Philadelphia righty Aaron Nola.

Apr 4 2022Wong went 1-for-3 with an RBI in Sunday's spring game. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong has had a steady spring, going 8-for-26 (.308) while posting an even .400 OBP. He has filled the leadoff spot in all 10 exhibition games he appeared in, which comes as little surprise considering he did the same in all 108 games he started a season ago. Expect him to be the first batter in the box when the Brewers kick off the regular season Thursday against the Cubs.
Oct 3 2021Wong is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Dodgers. Sep 30 2021Wong isn't starting Thursday's game against the Cardinals. Luis Urias will take his place at the keystone and lead off.

However, he'll start at second base and lead off in Thursday's series finale.
Sep 22 2021Wong was removed from Wednesday's loss to the Cardinals with hamstring tightness, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong went 0-for-3 before being pulled during the seventh inning with the Brewers facing a 7-1 deficit, and manager Craig Counsell indicated the team was being "careful" with the injury. The 30-year-old could be held out of the lineup Thursday if the injury lingers, as Milwaukee should look to keep the second baseman healthy ahead of the playoffs.
Sep 18 2021Wong went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in Friday's 8-5 win over the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong was one of two Brewers hitters to record multiple hits Friday -- his fourth multi-hit game in September -- after he knocked a double in the fourth and then a two-run single in the eighth to give his squad its first lead of the game. He went 4-for-20 with two doubles, two RBI, a run and seven strikeouts across his last five appearances prior to his absence.
Sep 3 2021Wong was placed on the paternity list Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong will step away from the team for a few days to be with his family following the birth of their child. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong returned Thursday from a four-game absence caused by calf tightness, but he was forced to exit in the third inning with the same injury. Manager Craig Counsell stated after the contest that the injured list is a possibility for Wong as a result. Jace Peterson would likely see the largest increase in playing time in Wong's absence.
Jun 30 2021Wong (calf) isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong was hopeful that he'd be able to return for Wednesday's series finale, but he'll be held out of the lineup for a fourth consecutive game. However, he should be available off the bench, and he could return to the starting lineup for Thursday's series opener against the Pirates, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Jace Peterson will start at second base and bat sixth Wednesday.
Jun 29 2021Wong (calf) remains on the bench for Tuesday's game against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong left Saturday's game against the Rockies with a calf issue and hasn't played since. Jack Peterson will start for the third straight game in his absence. Wong is hopeful that he'll be ready to return Wednesday, source reports.
Jun 28 2021Wong (calf) is out of the lineup Monday versus the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran second baseman was considered doubtful to play Monday, so it's no surprise to see him absent from the starting nine. According to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, Wong could be available as a pinch hitter, but manager Craig Counsell wants to avoid using him in the field. Jace Peterson is starting at the keystone for Milwaukee.
Jun 27 2021Wong (calf) is considered doubtful for Monday's game against the Cubs, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong left Saturday's game due to calf tightness and was held out of the lineup Sunday. Manager Craig Counsell said that the 30-year-old had improved Sunday, but he still isn't expected to play in Monday's series opener. While Counsell said it is possible that Wong could be available, Jace Peterson or Daniel Robertson could enter the lineup Monday.
Jun 26 2021Manager Craig Counsell said following Saturday's win over the Rockies that the team is hopeful Wong's calf tightness is just the result of a cramp, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong exited in the eighth inning after going 3-for-4 with a double, stolen base and run scored. The skipper said that Wong will be reassessed tomorrow and that the second baseman will most likely take a seat for the series finale. Wong has already landed on the injured list twice this season with oblique injuries, but he appears to have a strong chance of avoiding a third trip to the IL with the calf issue.
Jun 25 2021Wong went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, a double and three strikeouts in Friday's 5-4 win over the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong snapped his three-game hitting streak in Wednesday's win over the Diamondbacks, but he hit his third home run in the last five games during the eighth inning Friday. The 30-year-old has started in six of the seven contests since he returned from the injured list, and he's hit .310 with three home runs, two doubles, five RBI and five runs during that time.
Jun 22 2021Wong went 2-for-5 with a home run in Tuesday's win over Arizona. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong launched a home run off Zac Gallen in his first at-bat, and the Brewers wouldn't relinquish that lead the rest of the way. The second baseman is hitting .287 with a .813 OPS on the season, and he's beginning a new hitting streak since he's recorded hits in each of his last three contests, including two multi-hit games and two homers in that span.
Jun 20 2021Wong went 3-for-5 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's 7-6 win over Colorado. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong launched a two-run shot off Chi Chi Gonzalez in the second inning before knocking an RBI single in the fourth. The 30-year-old second baseman entered June on a 29-game homeless streak but already has three in just 18 at-bats this month. He owns a .797 OPS with 18 RBI and 18 extra-base hits through 189 plate appearances this season.
Jun 19 2021Wong isn't starting Saturday's game against Colorado. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong returned from the injured list Friday and went 1-for-5 in the loss to Colorado. Luis Urias will shift to second base while Daniel Robertson starts at the hot corner.
Jun 18 2021Wong (oblique) was activated from the 10-day injured list Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong will wind up missing two weeks with a strained left oblique. He returns in time for the second game a four-game series at Coors Field and will lead off and play second base Friday.
Jun 17 2021Wong (oblique) will go through a full workout Thursday in hopes that he could be reinstated from the injured list Friday, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Although Wong won't be available for Thursday's series opener in Colorado, manager Craig Counsell is optimistic that the second baseman could return if he feels good after his full workout. The 30-year-old has been on the injured list since June 4 but will likely reclaim his starting job at second base and hit near the top of the Brewers' lineup once he's officially activated.
Jun 15 2021Wong (oblique) will likely be activated during the upcoming series against the Rockies, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The series runs from Thursday through Sunday, so there is still some uncertainty about Wong's exact return date. He was hitting well before the injury, going 7-for-22 with two homers and two doubles in his last six games, and Wong will likely be near the top of Milwaukee's lineup once activated.
Jun 14 2021Wong (oblique) took batting practice on the field Monday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old has been sidelined nearly two weeks with a strained left oblique, and his return to full swings is a significant step in his rehab work. It was previously reported Wong is expected to be activated during the upcoming seven-game road trip, which runs Thursday through next Wednesday, and timeline is feasible if he remains on his current progression.
Jun 12 2021Wong (oblique) is expected to return during the Brewers' next road trip, which begins June 17 in Colorado and runs through June 23 in Arizona, Ryan Herrera of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A return in Coors Field would certainly be welcomed by those who have Wong in leagues with mid-week substitutions or daily roster moves. He has been out since June 3 with a left oblique strain. Wong started hitting off a tee June 10.
Jun 9 2021Manager Craig Counsell said Wong (oblique) is expected to return from the injured list before the end of June, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Counsell indicated Lorenzo Cain (hamstring) won't be activated until at least July 1, but Wong is expected back sooner. The second baseman landed on the shelf with a strained left oblique Friday, which is the second time this season he's dealt with the injury. The 30-year-old missed about two weeks in April the first time around and should be out a bit longer this time after aggravating the injury, though he'll likely return within a month. Luis Urias should continue handling the bulk of the starts at the keystone until Wong is healthy.
Jun 4 2021Wong was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with a strained left oblique. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong was initially considered day-to-day after leaving Thursday's game, but it has now been determined that he will have to go on the injured list for the second time this season due to an oblique issue. Wong missed a little over two weeks with a similar oblique injury in mid-April, and per Will Sammon of The Athletic, this IL stint could be longer in attempt to ensure the issue doesn't arise for a third time. With that said, a late-June return figures to be the earliest the second baseman could return to the Milwaukee lineup.
Jun 3 2021Wong (oblique) is considered day-to-day after he left Thursday's win over the Diamondbacks in the third inning, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Craig Counsell said after the game that Wong's injury isn't serious, but the team is slightly concerned since it's in the same spot as his April injury that forced him to miss just under two weeks. The 30-year-old will be evaluated again Friday to further determine the severity of the issue.
Jun 2 2021Wong went 2-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI in Tuesday's 10-7 loss to the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The two teams combined for nine long balls on the night, and Wong took advantage of the conditions to double his homer total on the season. Since getting a breather May 22 after he was hit by a pitch the day before, the second baseman has slashed .333/.350/.615 over his last 10 games with two homers, two steals, seven runs and nine RBI.
May 27 2021Wong went 1-for-1 with a walk, a run scored and two stolen bases Thursday against the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong wasn't in the starting lineup but entered the game as a defensive replacement in the seventh inning. He led off the in the bottom of the same frame with an infield single and proceeded to steal both second and third before coming around to score. He now has five stolen bases on the season, though he's also been caught twice.
May 24 2021Wong went 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, two RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's win over the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong has alternated hitless and multi-hit appearances over his last 12 outings, but he has recorded at least three knocks four times during that span. This was one of his most complete performances of the season, though, as he ended just a home run short of the cycle while also plating two of the team's nine runs. He's hitting .280 on the season.
May 23 2021Wong (arm) is starting at second base and batting leadoff Sunday at Cincinnati. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old was held out of Saturday's lineup after being hit by a pitch on the right arm during Friday's contest, but he had X-rays come back negative and will rejoin the lineup after a day off. Wong is 8-for-24 with two doubles, two walks, an RBI, a stolen base and five runs over his past six games.
May 21 2021Wong exited Friday's game against the Reds after getting hit on the right arm by a pitch, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. X-rays were negative, but he was still sore after the game. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He went 0-for-3 with a run scored and a strikeout prior to exiting. Daniel Robertson replaced him at second base, but once newly acquired Willy Adames joins the club, Luis Urias would be the natural fill-in at second base if Wong misses any time.
May 19 2021Wong went 3-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI, one run scored and a stolen base Wednesday against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong recorded his fifth multi-hit effort in his last 10 games. His production Wednesday was highlighted by two doubles -- he now has nine on the campaign -- and his third stolen base of the season. Wong has maintained a .274/.348/.402 line while also recording 16 runs scored across 132 plate appearances for the season.
May 16 2021Wong went 3-for-5 with three runs scored in Sunday's 10-9 win over Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong singled three times, including a pair of infield singles, and came around to score each time. It was his fifth multi-hit effort over the last 12 games, but he's been held hitless in the other seven during that span. Wong is slashing .266/.341/.385 with 15 runs scored this season.
May 8 2021Wong went 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored in Saturday's 6-2 win over the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The second baseman went 0-for-12 over his prior three games, but his bat perked up Saturday. Since returning from an oblique strain in late April, Wong has gone 20-for-60 (.333) with two homers, one steal, five RBI and 10 runs in 16 contests.
Apr 28 2021Wong went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run during Wednesday's 6-2 loss to the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old took the day off Tuesday and returned to the lineup Wednesday with his second homer of the season during the third inning, though the rest of the offense failed to provide any production. Wong began the season 2-for-19 before landing on the injured list with an oblique issue, but he's 11-for-21 with two homers, three doubles, one stolen base, four RBI and five runs since returning from the injury last week.
Apr 27 2021Wong will sit Tuesday against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong started four straight games after returning from an oblique injury and went on quite a tear, going 10-for-17 at the plate. He'll take a seat Tuesday, with Pablo Reyes starting at second base.
Apr 26 2021Wong went 2-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs in Sunday's victory over the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong missed two weeks earlier this month with an oblique injury, but he has been sizzling since being activated from the injured list Friday, going 7-for-13 (.538) with four extra-base hits in the Brewers' three-game weekend series with the Cubs. With Wong not needing any time to get reacclimated, expect him to continue leading off regularly for the Brewers.
Apr 23 2021Wong (oblique) was activated from the 10-day injured list Friday, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong has been on the injured list since April 10 with an oblique issue, but he'll rejoin the active roster Friday and is expected to start against the Cubs. The 30-year-old is off to a slow start as a member of the Brewers, going 2-for-19 with five walks and two runs through seven games prior to the injury.
Apr 21 2021Wong (oblique) will be activated from the 10-day injured list Friday to start against the Cubs, Sophia Minnaert of Fox Sports Wisconsin reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old landed on the injured list April 10 with oblique tightness, but he'll rejoin the lineup Friday after spending little more than the 10-day minimum on the shelf. Wong went 2-for-19 with five walks and two runs before the injury, and he'll attempt to get on track now that he's healthy.
Apr 19 2021Wong (oblique) is taking batting practice and participating in fielding drills Monday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.comreport. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong was sent to the 10-day injured list April 10 with oblique soreness, but he's expected to be activated from the injured list later in the week, likely during Milwaukee's upcoming series with the Cubs. He's off to a slow start to the 2021 campaign, going just 2-for-19 with five walks in seven contests.
Apr 10 2021Wong (oblique) was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong missed Wednesday's game against the Cubs due to oblique tightness and was removed in the seventh inning of Thursday's matchup due to the same issue. Daniel Robertson and Luis Urias could see increased time at second base while Wong recovers. Jace Peterson was recalled by Milwaukee in a corresponding move.
Apr 8 2021Wong exited Thursday's game against the Cardinals after aggravating his oblique injury, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong was removed in the seventh inning, one day after missing Wednesday's game with the same issue. He will be evaluated Friday, and manager Craig Counsell noted that time on the injured list would be a possibility -- though not a certainty -- for Wong. Daniel Robertson and Dee Strange-Gordon are the likeliest candidates to pick up playing time at second base if Wong is forced to miss further game action.
Apr 7 2021Wong isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Cubs due to oblique tightness, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong was a late scratch from Wednesday's lineup, but manager Craig Counsell said that the issue is "nothing to worry about." Wednesday's game fit the schedule for Wong to get a day off, and he's expected to be available for the team's upcoming series against the Cardinals.
Mar 17 2021Wong went 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs in Tuesday's spring game against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong's home run came off a lefty -- quite a talented one in Clayton Kershaw -- on the first pitch of the game. Wong figures to see quite a few first pitches this season, as he has hit leadoff in every game he has appeared in this spring. He will almost surely open the regular season at the top of the order against right-handed starters, and he may do the same against southpaws, as he posted a .370 OBP last year against lefties and Lorenzo Cain (quad) is not a lock to be ready for Opening Day.
Feb 3 2021Wong signed a two-year, $18 million contract with the Brewers on Wednesday, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong and the Brewers engaged in serious talks recently, and the two sides were able to reach an agreement Wednesday. The contract contains an $8 million club option for 2023. Wong spent the first eight years of his career in St. Louis and slashed .265/.350/.326 with one home run, 16 RBI and five stolen bases over 53 games in 2020. He'll likely take over at second base for the Brewers, while Keston Hiura should shift to first base.
Oct 28 2020President John Mozeliak announced Wednesday the Cardinals declined Wong's $12.5 million club option for 2021, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old has spent the entirety of his career with the Cardinals since being selected during the first round of the 2011 draft, but he'll head to free agency with the team deciding to pay the $1 million buyout rather than pick up the 2021 option. Wong had a career-worst .676 OPS with only seven extra-base hits in 208 plate appearances during the shortened season, though he continues to be a plus-defender at second base after winning the Gold Glove in 2019. Mozeliak indicated the door is open for Wong to return to St. Louis, but for now he'll hit the open market.
Oct 2 2020Wong went 1-for-4 with a home run and four RBI during Thursday's 11-9 loss to the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old's only hit of the game was a two-run homer during the second inning, but he also drove in a pair of runs via a groundout and a sacrifice fly. Wong is 2-for-10 with one homer, one double and four RBI through the first two games of the series after finishing the regular season on a seven-game hit streak (.346 average).
Sep 26 2020Wong went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple and a run during a win over the Brewers in the second game of a doubleheader Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran leadoff man came through with his second three-bagger of the season in the second inning, plating Matt Wieters with the Cardinals' third run of the night. The two-hit effort extended Wong's hitting streak to five games, giving him some momentum ahead of a potential postseason run for St. Louis.
Sep 23 2020Wong went 2-for-3 with an RBI single and a walk in a win over the Royals on Tuesday. He was also caught stealing on one attempt. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran second baseman was a constant presence on the bases in a productive effort, one that included his first multi-hit effort since Sept. 7. Wong hasn't done much more than hit singles in September -- he has just three doubles and one home run among his 25 hits this month -- but he's still been a key component of the Cardinals' offensive efforts with a .300 average and impressive .371 on-base percentage across his 94 plate appearances during that span.
Sep 21 2020Wong's absence from the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates was merely precautionary and not an indication of a recurrence of the side issue that recently plagued him, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Mike Shildt gave Wong a day off Sunday as a precautionary measure, noting it's a "balancing act" to afford key players down time while still pushing for a postseason spot down the stretch. Wong had managed the side issue while reportedly taping up heavily over the last four games, and after Sunday's rest, he could well be back in the lineup for the beginning of a three-game series against the Royals on Monday.
Sep 20 2020Wong is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong recently shook off a side injury to start in each of the Cardinals' last four games, so manager Mike Shildt may just be extending the second baseman a breather in the series finale. Tommy Edman will spell Wong at the keystone and serve as St. Louis' leadoff man.
Sep 19 2020Wong went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI during a 6-5 win over the Pirates in the first game of Friday's doubleheader. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He led off the game with his first homer of the year and added an RBI groundout in the fourth inning. After an 0-for-4 performance in the nightcap, Wong is slashing .259/.345/.320 with three steals, 12 RBI and 23 runs in 43 games this year.
Sep 18 2020Wong (side) went 1-for-3 in a loss to the Pirates on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong ultimately missed three games with his side issue, as he was a late scratch from Tuesday's lineup and then sat for both games of Wednesday's twin bill. His return to action Thursday corroborates his prior statement that he was already feeling better Wednesday after seemingly acquiring the injury during batting practice prior to Tuesday's contest.
Sep 17 2020Wong (side) is starting at second base and batting ninth Thursday against the Pirates, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old was scratched from Tuesday's lineup with the left side issue and didn't play in Wednesday's doubleheader, but he'll rejoin the starting nine Thursday. Wong has a .328/.391/.379 slash line with three doubles, nine runs and six RBI through 16 games in September.
Sep 16 2020Wong is out of the lineup for the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Brewers and is unlikely to play in the second game of the twin bill, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Wong noted his condition is improving, he's not sure he'll be able to play Wednesday after he was scratched ahead of Tuesday's game when he experienced discomfort on his left side near his rib cage. According to Jones, Wong said he underwent an MRI that cleared him of any structural damage, so the Cardinals are seemingly viewing him as day-to-day at this point. Tommy Edman will spell Wong at second base in the first game of the doubleheader.
Sep 15 2020Wong was scratched from Tuesday's lineup against the Brewers with left side discomfort, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old was scratched less than an hour before first pitch due to the hip injury, and it's unclear when the issue first surfaced. Tommy Edman is starting at second base Tuesday and figures to see regular opportunities there should Wong be forced to miss time, though the severity of the injury remains unclear.
Sep 12 2020Wong went 1-for-5 with a stolen base in Saturday's 7-1 win over the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong got aboard with a single in the sixth inning and stole second, but he got caught up in a double play one at-bat before Paul Goldschmidt's solo home run. The steal was Wong's third of the year in four tries. He's slashing .270/.371/.320 with no homers, nine RBI and 22 runs scored through 37 games.
Sep 8 2020Wong is out of the lineup for Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Twins, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong started the matinee and went 0-for-1 with a run and two walks as the leadoff man. Brad Miller will cover the keystone in the nightcap while Paul Goldschmidt serves as the designated hitter.
Sep 7 2020Wong, who went 2-for-5 with an RBI double and a run in a win over the Cubs on Sunday, is hitting .391 (9-for-27) over his first six September contests. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: That impressive figure is partly comprised of three doubles, four RBI, one walk, one hit by pitch and seven runs, making it a busy and productive start to the month for the veteran second baseman. Wong is also getting on base at an elite 44.0 percent clip over that span, and although he's still looking for his first home run after hitting 11 last season, Wong does have an impressive .356 OBP for the season thanks in part to a career-best 10.9 percent walk rate and career-low 14.3 percent strikeout rate.
Sep 1 2020Wong went 4-for-4 with a double, four runs and two RBI during Tuesday's 16-2 win over the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong broke out of a 1-for-18 slump with two hits Monday, and he built upon that performance as the Cardinals eviscerated the Reds on Tuesday. The 29-year-old has a .256/.367/.305 with two doubles, one triple, 17 runs and six RBI in 25 games.
Aug 29 2020Wong isn't in Saturday's lineup against Cleveland, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong went 0-for-5 in Friday's contest, and he'll retreat to the bench for the second time in the last three games. Tommy Edman will start at second base in his absence.
Aug 27 2020Wong is not starting Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong will head to the bench for the second half of Thursday's twin bill after going 0-for-3 with an RBI in Game 1. Max Schrock is starting at the keystone in his place.
Aug 24 2020Wong isn't starting Monday against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong is currently riding a seven-game hitting streak, but he'll get a day off for the series opener against Kansas City. Tommy Edman will shift to second base with Brad Miller starting at third base.
Aug 19 2020Wong went 3-for-7 with a double, four runs, a stolen base and a walk during Wednesday's doubleheader against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old did most of his damage during the Game 1 victory, as he came around to score all four times he reached base. Wong has a .250/.348/.325 slash line with only two extra-base hits through 46 plate appearances.
Aug 17 2020Wong isn't starting the second game of Monday's doubleheader against the Cubs, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong led off in Game 1, though he failed to collect a base knock in three at-bats. He'll get the rest of the evening off with Max Schrock getting the nod at second base.
Aug 15 2020Wong isn't starting Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After going 0-for-3 with a walk and a run in the opening game of Saturday's twin bill, Wong will get a breather for Game 2. Max Schrock will take over at second base, batting eighth.
Jul 25 2020Wong (neck) went 2-for-4 with a triple in a win over the Pirates on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran second baseman was at the top of the lineup as expected after dealing with some neck stiffness late in summer camp, and he wasted no time notching his first extra-base hit of the campaign. Wong bounced back from a subpar 2018 at the plate with a solid .285/.361/.423 line last season across 148 games, and he also stole a career-high 24 bases. He'll look to provide similarly well-rounded production in the shortened season while often operating at the top of the order.
Jul 24 2020Wong (neck) said he's good to go for Friday's season opener against the Pirates, Jim Hayes of FOX Sports Midwest reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old sat out Wednesday's exhibition game against the Royals with neck stiffness, but it appears it was only a precautionary move. Wong had a .285/.361/.423 slash line with 11 home runs in 2019 and should operate as the Cardinals' primary second baseman this season.
Jul 22 2020Wong won't play in Wednesday's exhibition game against the Royals due to neck stiffness but is expected to be ready to play in Friday's Opening Day game against the Pirates, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong suffered the injury while stealing a base Tuesday. If the issue doesn't improve by Friday, the Cardinals could slide Tommy Edman to second base and start Matt Carpenter at third, opening up the designated hitter spot for one of their extra outfielders.
Jun 7 2020Wong, whose contract includes a 2021 club option with a $1 million buyout as per Spotrac, may ultimately be allowed to enter free agency due to payroll considerations, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch projects. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong's 2021 salary is set for a robust $12.5 million if he is brought back, so the specter of a possible and much less expensive buyout will loom unless the parties agree on an extension in the coming months. Goold speculates Tommy Edman's ongoing development and the economic difficulties stemming from an abbreviated or potentially canceled 2020 season will both be significant factors in what ultimately happens with Wong's future with the team.
Jun 3 2020Wong was one of the players present for the Cardinals' first on-field workout in more than two months Wednesday at Busch Stadium, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong and his teammates followed social distancing guidelines during the four-player workout, but they still got some productive work in. That included Wong's first opportunity to face noted offseason acquisition Kwang-Hyun Kim for some live reps in the batter's box, an encounter from which the veteran second baseman came away impressed. "First time facing his funkiness, and he has some funkiness," Wong said. "That guy attacks. Both sides. It was good to get in that kind of at-bat. He showed me a good curve, and then the slider - it just disappeared."
May 21 2020Wong, who initially stayed behind in Jupiter, Florida when spring training was suspended, has been working out in the St. Louis area for some time, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran second baseman has been able to regularly take groundballs as part of his activities according to Goold, and he's presumably gotten hitting work in some form as well. Given his current location, Wong projects to be one of the players that's present for the small group workouts at Busch Stadium that the Cardinals will be allowed to conduct beginning next week. Wong was building plenty of momentum before play was paused, as he hit .333 (7-for-21) over 10 Grapefruit League contests.
Apr 12 2020Wong, who hit .333 (7-for-21) across 10 Grapefruit League games, is one player for whom the suspension of spring training is particularly ill-timed, Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old overcame a minor calf issue this spring to put together a strong exhibition slate, and given the success at the plate he was enjoying, the interruption in play was especially inopportune. Wong is projected to lead off for the Cardinals whenever the season does begin, and the .480 on-base percentage he generated in spring training over a small sample served as an indicator he is up to the task. The 29-year-old laid the foundation for securing the job by posting a stellar .361 on-base percentage last season despite making 421 of his 549 plate appearances from the sixth spot in the order or lower.
Mar 12 2020Wong (calf) will resume playing Thursday as expected, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Mike Shildt said Wednesday that he expected Wong to return to action the following day, and he is scheduled to do just that. With nearly two weeks of spring training games to go, Wong should have plenty of time to get back up to speed before Opening Day.
Mar 11 2020Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said Wong's bruised left calf is feeling better, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. The skipper expects the second baseman to return to the Grapefruit League lineup for Thursday's game against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong looks like he'll only require a few days to heal up after he was plunked in the calf by a pitch Sunday. The 29-year-old has already logged 21 at-bats this spring, so he looks well on his way to being ready for Opening Day.
Mar 8 2020Wong was diagnosed with a left calf contusion after being hit by a pitch during Sunday's Grapefruit League game versus the Marlins, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old was hit by a pitch in his first plate appearance and exited the game after staying in to run to bases. Wong already wasn't scheduled to travel for Monday's game against the Twins, so he'll be reevaluated then before the team provides a timeline for his potential return to spring games.
Feb 16 2020Wong, who the Cardinals have a club option on for 2021, is open to discussing a contract extension this spring, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's a particularly opportune time for Wong to talk money with the Cardinals considering he's coming off a 2019 season during which he earned his first Gold Glove award and posted career bests in both batting average (.285) and slugging percentage (.423). The 29-year-old's 2021 salary would clock in at $12.5 million were the option to be picked up, and it would only cost the team $1 million to buy him out. Wong might be somewhat of a risky proposition for a true long-term deal given his inconsistent offense over the last several seasons and the fact he'll be 30 by the time the 2021 season starts; however, Goold reports a shorter-term extension akin to the two-year agreement signed by Matt Carpenter last spring is conceivable for Wong as well.
Oct 3 2019Wong is in the starting lineup for Game 1 of the National League Division Series against the Braves on Thursday, batting seventh.
Oct 3 2019Wong is in the starting lineup for Game 1 of the National League Division Series against the Braves on Thursday, batting seventh. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong expressed his availability leading up to Game 1, and he is officially in the starting lineup after missing time since mid-September due to a left hamstring strain. Prior to the injury, the 28-year-old hit .342/.409/.487 with 24 RBI since the All-Star break.
Oct 2 2019Wong (hamstring) will be in the lineup for Game 1 of the NLDS against the Braves on Thursday, Jim Hayes of FOX Sports Midwest reports.
Oct 2 2019Wong (hamstring) will be in the lineup for Game 1 of the NLDS against the Braves on Thursday, Jim Hayes of FOX Sports Midwest reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong said himself that he expects to play, and manager Mike Shildt confirmed as much Wednesday. His return for force Tommy Edman and Matt Carpenter to compete for at-bats at third base.
Sep 29 2019Wong (hamstring) is not in Sunday's lineup against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He has been out since Sept. 19, and this seems like the type of injury that would have resulted in a stint on the injured list if not for expanded rosters. It's unclear if/when he will be able to return in the postseason. Tommy Edman starts at second base while Matt Carpenter starts at the hot corner.
Sep 28 2019Wong (hamstring) is not in Saturday's lineup against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He was reportedly only running at 70-to-80 percent Friday, so it seems unlikely he will be able to return before the postseason. Matt Carpenter will start at third base while Tommy Edman slides over to the keystone.
Sep 27 2019Wong (hamstring) ran at 70-to-80 percent prior to Friday's game against the Cubs, Rob Rains of StLSportsPage.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong is hopeful to play sometime over the weekend before the regular season comes to an end, but his availability will depend on how he responds to Friday's activities. The Cardinals' primary concern will be getting him ready for the postseason.
Sep 25 2019Wong (hamstring) resumed running and some baseball activities Wednesday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This is an encouraging development for Wong, who has been sidelined since last Friday with a Grade 2 hamstring strain. The second baseman is trending in the right direction, though whether he returns before the end of the regular season will likely depend on how he responds to on-field batting practice Thursday.
Sep 24 2019Wong (hamstring) did not travel with the Cardinals to Arizona for their final road trip of the season and instead remained back in St. Louis to receive treatment, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. "He potentially could have gotten into some baseball activity on Wednesday," Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said. "But based on the travel and flight, it made sense for him to get back to St. Louis and get full attention back there." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 hamstring strain and is hoping to improve enough to reenter the starting nine for the final series of the season, which unfolds this coming weekend versus the Cubs at Busch Stadium. At minimum, Wong is trying to get some at-bats in before the postseason, but he could also be a key part of St. Louis' quest for the NL Central title if that still hangs in the balance following the current series against the Diamondbacks.
Sep 22 2019Wong has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 hamstring strain and is hoping to return for the final three games of the regular season, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong will miss a third straight game Sunday, and at least a few more with the hamstring injury that, according to manager Mike Shildt, "probably" would have landed Wong on the injured list in any other month. The Cardinals don't have much incentive to rush Wong back with a playoff berth nearly in hand, so he may not play again in before the regular season comes to a close. Expect the team to provide another update on Wong's status at some point later this week.
Sep 21 2019The MRI that Wong (hamstring) underwent Friday revealed a "mild-to-moderate strain," and the second baseman is planning to meet with a doctor Saturday for further evaluation, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. "I want to see when I can be used," Wong said. "I feel good. The last time I pulled my hamstring, the day after I was super tight. This time, the day after, I felt good. Flexibility was there, everything was there." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Wong certainly sounds an optimistic tone, manager Mike Shildt emphasized that the Cardinals will be particularly cautious given the unpredictable nature of soft-tissue injuries. Rogers reports Wong will have to prove he's able to complete all fundamental baseball activities -- swinging, running and fielding -- without any pain before being cleared for a return. Wong is currently feeling the most discomfort when planting firmly, and he's not yet resumed swinging a bat.
Sep 20 2019Wong (hamstring) is not in the lineup Friday against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong's absence is no surprise, as manager Mike Shildt said Thursday that the second baseman was expected to miss at least a few days. He underwent an MRI Friday morning, the results of which have yet to be released. Tommy Edman slides to second base in his absence, with Matt Carpenter starting at third.
Sep 19 2019Wong has been diagnosed with a mild left hamstring strain and will undergo an MRI on Friday morning, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Cardinals won't know more on Wong's availability until his test results come back, but manager Mike Shildt noted after the game that he expects Wong to miss at least the next few days, per Mark Saxon of The Athletic. Tommy Edman figures to slot in at second base until Wong returns, opening the door for Matt Carpenter to start at the hot corner.
Sep 17 2019Wong stole his career-high 23rd base of the season as part of an 0-for-3 performance that included a walk in a win over the Nationals on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong is actually on pace to produce career-best figures in multiple categories during 2019, but he's already accomplished the feat on the basepaths. He boasts an impressive 92.0 percent success rate on his 25 steal attempts.
Sep 14 2019Wong went 3-for-4 with a two-run single and two runs in a win over the Brewers on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong continues to churn out multi-hit efforts with regularity, as Friday's game marked his fifth time accomplishing the feat in September, and his eighth such tally over his last 16 contests overall. The veteran second baseman's .287/.365/.432 line is fully comprised of career-best figures, and he's just one home run and two RBI shy of equaling his high-water marks in those categories as well.
Sep 12 2019Wong went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, walk, double, two RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases Thursday against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong stuffed the staff sheet Thursday, beginning the game with a solo home run -- his 11th long ball of the season. He was also busy on the basepaths, bringing his stolen base total to 22 for the campaign. It's been his most productive season since 2015, as he's also managed a .283/.362/.429 line across 521 plate appearances.
Sep 8 2019Wong went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs in a win over the Pirates on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wong was a catalyst in the Cardinals' latest big win, setting the table effectively on two occasions. The 28-year-old is 10-for-29 over his first seven games of September, putting him on pace to finish the season with a third consecutive month of an average over .300.
Sep 2 2019Wong went 3-for-4 with an RBI triple in a loss to the Reds during the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday.
Sep 1 2019Wong is out of the lineup for Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Reds.
Aug 28 2019Wong went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in a 4-1 loss against the Brewers on Wednesday.
Aug 27 2019Wong (toe) went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI, and a stolen base in Tuesday's win at Milwaukee
Aug 26 2019Wong (toe) is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Brewers.
Aug 25 2019Wong (toe) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Aug 24 2019Wong fouled a ball off his foot Saturday but didn't suffer a fracture in his big toe as X-rays came back negative, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Aug 21 2019Wong went 1-for-5 with a two-run single, a stolen base and a run in a win over the Brewers on Tuesday.
Aug 18 2019Wong is not in Sunday's lineup against the Reds.

Aug 14 2019Wong, who went 2-for-3 with a double in a win over the Royals on Tuesday, is now hitting .357 (10-for-28) across his first 10 games of August.
Aug 11 2019Wong is not in Sunday's lineup against the Pirates.
Aug 6 2019Wong isn't in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Dodgers, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

Jul 23 2018Wong (knee) appears to have avoided a major injury, and he'll likely be activated from the 10-day disabled list after missing the minimum, Joe Treza of MLB.com reports.Wong was placed on the disabled list Monday with left knee inflammation. After an MRI ruled out any structural damage, the Cardinals are optimistic that Wong will return August 1 after missing just 10 days. The 27-year-old second baseman endured a rough start to the 2018 campaign, but he's turned it around recently, as he's hitting .309 with a home run, eight RBI and two stolen bases through 17 games.
Jul 23 2018Wong was placed on the disabled list with left knee inflammation Monday. There hadn't been any reports that Wong was dealing with an injury, though he did sit out Sunday's contest. He'll be eligible to return Aug. 1. Daniel Poncedeleon was called up to make his major-league debut in a corresponding move.
Jul 22 2018Wong is out of the lineup Sunday against the Cubs. The Cubs are bringing a lefty (Jose Quintana) to the hill for the second consecutive contest, so Wong will once again give way to Yairo Munoz at second base. Over the first four games of the series with Chicago, Wong went 4-for-15 with a double, walk, three RBI and two runs.
Jul 21 2018Wong is not starting the back half of Saturday's doubleheader against the Cubs.Wong went 0-for-4 in the first game of the day. Greg Garcia will start at second base in his place for the nightcap.
Jul 20 2018Wong went 2-for-5 with two RBI from a pair of run-scoring singles in a loss to the Cubs on Thursday.Wong was finally showing some signs of life at the plate leading up to the All-Star break, as he'd racked up a quartet of multi-hit efforts since July 5. It was therefore encouraging for fantasy owners to see the embattled second baseman open the second half in similarly productive fashion, plating his sixth and seventh RBI of the month while pushing his July average to .333. The surge has already boosted Wong's unsightly .189 average 28 points to .217, a figure that naturally still has plenty of room for improvement. However, the stretch of success at least provides reason for some cautious optimism.
Jul 11 2018Wong went 4-for-5 with a double, a two-run home run and two runs scored in Tuesday's win over the White Sox.Wong slashed a double -- his eighth of the year -- off starter Dylan Covey and later clubbed a two-run shot off Hector Santiago to give him seven home runs on the year. Wong has had multi-hit performances in four of his last five games, bringing his slash line to .221/.313/.373 on the year. The 27-year-old is still quite a bit below his .285/.376/.412 mark from last year, but he's showing signs of improvement of late.
Jul 8 2018Wong is out of the lineup Sunday against the Giants. It's no surprise that the lefty-hitting Wong will find himself on the bench with one of the top southpaws in the game, Madison Bumgarner, on the hill for San Francisco. Yairo Munoz will man the keystone in Wong's stead.
Jul 7 2018Wong went 2-for-3 with two RBI from a double and a triple in a loss to the Giants on Friday. The light-hitting second baseman was ultimately the sole source of offense for the Cardinals on the night, compiling both of his RBI with two outs in the second and seventh innings, respectively. Wong now has back-to-back two-hit efforts for only the second time all season, and he's gotten July off to a strong start by going 6-for-17 (.353) over five starts. The surge has pushed his average over the Mendoza Line for the first time since May 10, but Wong's current .203/.301/.343 line naturally has plenty of room for improvement.
Jul 4 2018Wong is not starting Wednesday against the Diamondbacks, Jody Jackson of FOX Sports Arizona reports.Wong will take a seat against the left-handed Patrick Corbin. Jedd Gyorko starts at second base in his place.
Jun 30 2018Wong will not start Saturday against the Braves.Wong will take a seat against left-hander Max Fried. Jedd Gyorko will get the start at second base in his place.
Jun 29 2018Wong (hamstring) will start at second base and bat seventh in the order against the Braves on Friday.Wong was removed from Wednesday's game against Cleveland after getting struck by a pair of pitches in the fourth and sixth innings in the hamstring area. The second baseman exited after the second incident but won't miss any additional time after receiving treatment during the Redbirds' off day.
Jun 27 2018Wong, who was hit in the hamstring area by two separate pitches in Wednesday's game against the Indians, hopes he'll be ready to play Friday against the Braves, FOX Sports Midwest reports.Indians starter Shane Bieber hit Wong in the fourth and sixth innings of this contest, and Wong left after the second incident to go get acupuncture and spend some time in the hot and cold tubs to try to reduce the swelling. Wong was hit for the 11th and 12th times this season, and is now tied for the National League lead in that department. If Wong is unable to start against righty Julio Teheran after Thursday's off day, the Cardinals would likely give Jedd Gyorko the start at the keystone.
Jun 27 2018Wong left Wednesday's game against the Indians after being hit by a pitch in two separate at-bats, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports. He has now been hit by a pitch 12 times this season, which ties him for the National League lead. Wong was hit by Shane Bieber pitches in the fourth and sixth innings, and was replaced by Jedd Gyorko at second base to start the seventh inning. It's unclear what the exact injury is, but his status will be updated when the team provides an official diagnosis.
Jun 27 2018Wong went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and two runs in a win over the Indians on Tuesday.Wong joined the Cardinals' hit parade with his sixth round tripper of the season, a two-run shot in the third inning off reliever Dan Otero. The productive night extends what's been a bit of a resurgence for the struggling second baseman, who's hit safely in five of the last seven games in which he's registered an official at-bat. Wong has hit two of his three homers on the season during that span as well, partly on the strength of an excellent 50.0 percent hard contact rate.
Jun 23 2018Wong is not in the lineup against Milwaukee on Saturday.Wong will sit for the second time in the past three games after going 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts in Friday's outing. In his place, Jedd Gyorko will start and second base and bat sixth.
Jun 21 2018Wong is out of the lineup against the Brewers on Thursday.Wong will take a seat with southpaw Brent Suter on the hill for Milwaukee. Jedd Gyorko will start at second base in his stead. Over 66 games this season, Wong is hitting just .189/.285/.314 with five home runs, 12 RBI and one stolen base.
Jun 18 2018Wong is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Phillies.Wong will retreat to the bench for a second straight game and the fifth time in six games while Jedd Gyorko picks up another start at the keystone in his stead. While Gyorko isn't doing much to stake a claim on the starting role, hitting just .175/.195/.275 through 15 games this month, Wong will need to show signs of turning things around at the plate if he wants to wrestle back some of his playing time.
Jun 17 2018Wong is out of the lineup Sunday against the Cubs.Wong will hit the bench for the fourth time in six games with the Cardinals scheduled to face another lefty starter (Jose Quintana). Jedd Gyorko will pick up another start at the keystone, but doesn't have much of a case yet for sticking in the lineup over Wong against right-handed pitching. Wong has supplied a poor .626 OPS versus righties this season, but that's still better than Gyorko's .569 mark in those matchups.
Jun 15 2018Wong is not in the lineup Friday against the Cubs.Wong will sit against the left-handed Jon Lester. Jedd Gyorko will start at second base in his place. Gyorko has started four of the last six games over Wong, twice against a righty and twice against a lefty.
Jun 12 2018Wong is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Padres.Wong has now sat in favor of Jedd Gyorko in three of the last four games. Wong has a measly .185/.287/.305 line on the season, compared to .260/.328/.423 for Gyorko, so he could continue to find himself on the bench.
Jun 11 2018Wong is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Padres.Wong is hitting just .217/.333/.391 through nine games this month, so he'll give way to Jedd Gyorko at the keystone for the second time in three games.
Jun 9 2018Wong is out of the lineup against the Reds on Saturday.Wong will head to the bench after going 0-for-3 with three strikeouts and a walk during Friday's victory. In his absence, Jedd Gyorko will make a start at second base and bat sixth in the order.
Jun 8 2018Wong, who went 2-for-3 with a walk in Thursday's win over the Marlins, is hitting .294 over six June games after posting a .164 average over 70 May plate appearances. The second baseman's average still sits at a sub-Mendoza .193 for the season, but it's already come up 17 points since June 1. While Wong's 14.8 percent strikeout rate remains impressively low and right in line with his career norms, he has seen a significant drop in line-drive rate from 20.1 percent to 12.9 percent from last season, as well as a decline in hard contact from 28.2 percent to 22.6 percent. Therefore, if he can begin squaring up on the ball more consistently, there's a good chance that his other numbers will see a corresponding bump in time.
Jun 6 2018Wong is out of the lineup against Miami on Wednesday, Jim Hayes of Fox Sports Midwest reports.Wong will take a seat following five straight starts as southpaw Wei-Yin Chen gets the nod for the Marlins. In his place, Jedd Gyorko will draw the assignment at second base and bat sixth in the order.
Jun 3 2018Wong went 1-for-3 with a walk-off solo home run in a win over the Pirates on Saturday. After Bud Norris had surrendered a game-tying solo shot to Austin Meadows in the top half of the ninth, Wong stepped up with a 382-foot blast to right field to lead off the home half of the frame and send the Cardinals home winners. It was the 27-year-old's first round tripper since May 18, and it represented a rare highlight in what has been a dreadful first two months-plus of the season for Wong. His line remains a dreadful .179/.279/.306 over 157 plate appearances, although a .187 BABIP that's bound to eventually rise is undoubtedly playing a significant role in his struggles.
May 19 2018Wong went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in a win over the Phillies on Friday.Wong slugged the third of three Cardinals homers over a two-inning span when he launched a Yacksel Rios offering 394 feet to right in the seventh. It was the struggling second baseman's first round tripper since May 5, and only his seventh hit across the 12 games this month in which he's registered an official at-bat. Factoring in Friday's production, Wong's season line remains a forgettable .190/.295/.324.
May 17 2018Wong is out of the lineup Thursday against the Phillies.Wong will stick on the bench for a second straight game as manager Mike Matheny gives Matt Carpenter another start following his three-hit performance Wednesday. The 27-year-old Wong is hitting just .182/.293/.293 through 37 games this season, so he could start to lose out on playing time if Carpenter continues to pick it up at the plate.
May 16 2018Wong is not in the lineup against Minnesota on Wednesday.Wong will take a seat on the pine after going 0-for-2 with a hit by pitch during Tuesday's affair. In his place, Greg Garcia will start at second base and bat ninth in the order.
May 12 2018Wong is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against San Diego.Wong is hitless in his last three starts with five strikeouts in 11 at-bats, so this is likely just a mental day off. The 27-year-old has yet to find his groove this season with a .196/.306/.315 slash line in 92 at-bats.
May 8 2018Wong is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Twins. The second baseman is hitting .212/.313/.341 through his first 101 plate appearances, though a .235 BABIP suggests that those numbers could improve a bit. Matt Carpenter slides over to second base in his place, with Greg Garcia getting a start at third.
May 7 2018Wong went 3-for-6 with an RBI triple in an extra-innings win over the Cubs on Sunday.Wong evened up the contest at 2-2 with a sixth-inning three-bagger off Steve Cishek that Jason Heyward seemed to lose in the lights, plating Jedd Gyorko. Fresh off the heels of supplying a game-winning home run Saturday, the 27-year-old second baseman raised his average another 22 points with Sunday's effort. After a dreadful start that saw his average sitting at .133 as recently as April 21, Wong has boosted the figure a whopping 89 points over the subsequent 11 games.
May 5 2018Wong walked off the Cubs with a two-run homer in the 10th inning Saturday.Wong went 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI on the day. He was also hit by a pitch twice. The homer was just his second of the season and just the 34th of his six-year major-league career, making him an unlikely candidate for a walkoff blast. Despite the heroics, Wong's line still sits at .200/.315/.320 on the season.
May 4 2018Wong is out of the lineup against the Cubs on Friday.Wong will head back to the bench after starting the past two games as Jedd Gyorko gets a start in the infield at third base. Over 27 games this season, Wong is hitting just .194/.298/.278 with one home run and five RBI.
Apr 29 2018Wong is out of the lineup Sunday against the Pirates, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Wong is often a regular in the lineup against right-handed pitching, so his presence on the bench with rookie righty Nick Kingham on the hill for Pittsburgh is somewhat confounding. Perhaps Cardinals manager Mike Matheny wanted to build in a rest day for the second baseman, who had started in each of St. Louis' past six games. Greg Garcia will man the keystone in the series finale.
Apr 26 2018Wong went 2-for-4 with two runs in a win over the Mets on Wednesday.Wong's second straight two-hit effort pushed his improving average to a still unsightly .196 that nevertheless represents a considerable improvement over his figure from just four games ago. The 27-year-old entered last Sunday's series finale versus the Reds sporting a .133 average, but his 5-for-11 tally over the subsequent three games has provided a much-needed 63-point boost.
Apr 25 2018Wong went 2-for-4 with an RBI double, another two-bagger and a run in an extra-innings loss to the Mets on Tuesday.Mired in an epic slump for most of the season, Wong has shown some signs of life at the plate over the last two games. The infielder has gone 3-for-7 with Tuesday's pair of doubles and a solo home run in his last pair of contests, his first three extra-base hits of 2018. While his current .173/.295/.269 line has abundant room for improvement, Wong's .185 BABIP and career body of work both imply he's bound to see some hits start falling in on a much more consistent basis.
Apr 22 2018Wong went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and two runs scored in Sunday's win over the Reds.To say it's been a rough start would be a bit of an understatement, as Wong was 1-for-19 in his past eight games coming into Sunday. The home run was also just his first extra-base hit of the year, and the one-hit day raised his average to a meager .146. Wong has an unsustainably low .154 BABIP and hit for a .285 average last season, so it's likely he'll turn it around at some point but it won't be worth taking a flier on until he figures it out.
Apr 20 2018Wong is not in the lineup Friday against the Reds.Wong is off to a very slow start to the season, hitting .146/.286/146 through 49 plate appearances. He's getting hurt by some bad luck, though, as his BABIP is just .171. His 6:6 BB:K is also an encouraging sign. Matt Carpenter will start at second base in his place Friday, with Jedd Gyorko getting a start at third.
Apr 17 2018Wong is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Cubs.Wong has struggled at the plate from the get-go, hitting just .150 in 40 at-bats. He'll head to the bench for a night off Tuesday, forcing Matt Carpenter to slide over to second base while Greg Garcia logs a start at third.
Apr 14 2018Wong is not in the lineup against the Reds on Saturday, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.Greg Garcia will get a start at the keystone to give Wong a rest following seven straight starts. Throughout 13 appearances with the Redbirds this year, Wong is hitting .162/.262/.162 with zero extra-base hits and one RBI in 42 plate appearances.
Apr 8 2018Wong went 0-for-3 in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Diamondbacks, lowering his season average to .056.Perhaps the .205 average over 52 spring training plate appearances was a harbinger of a slow start, but Wong has hit rock-bottom over his first seven games. The second baseman has just a hit and a walk in 19 plate appearances, a stark departure thus far from the career-best .285/.376/.412 line he generated in 2017. Naturally, the small sample size gives must be taken heavily into account, but the fact his season-opening struggles come on the heels of a sluggish exhibition slate gives at least a bit more reason for concern.
Apr 8 2018Wong went 2-for-3 with an RBI during Sunday's loss to the Diamondbacks.Wong showed some upside during Sunday's matchup, as he recorded his first RBI of the season and reached base twice. He's slashing .143/.182/.325 through his first eight games, although there's plenty of time for the 27-year-old second baseman to turn it around.
Apr 5 2018Wong is not in the lineup Thursday against the Diamondbacks. The Cardinals are facing tough lefty with Robbie Ray starting for Arizona, so Wong will retreat to the bench for a night off. Matt Carpenter will slide over to second base to replace him, allowing Yairo Munoz to log a start at the hot corner.
Apr 2 2018Wong will be on the bench again for Monday's game against the Brewers.Wong sat as expected against the left-handed Steven Matz on Sunday, but he'll sit again Monday despite facing the right-handed Chase Anderson. Matt Carpenter will play second base again, with Jedd Gyorko receiving another start at third. Wong may end up being the primary victim of the emergence of Jose Martinez, who has opened the year 5-for-11. With Martinez becoming the team's everyday first baseman, Matt Carpenter is forced to slide over to second base at Wong's expense.
Apr 1 2018Wong is out of the lineup Sunday against the Mets. With southpaw Steven Matz on the mound for the opposition, the lefty-hitting Wong will take a seat in favor of Jedd Gyorko, who will start at third base while Matt Carpenter moves over to the keystone. Wong's strong career marks against right-handed pitching should enable him to hold down the bulk of the starts at second base throughout the season, though his regular placement near the bottom of the order could inhibit his run production.
Mar 12 2018Wong is expected to serve as the Cardinals' No. 8 hitter during the upcoming season, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Aside from the notable absence of Matt Carpenter, who remains unavailable due to a back injury, the St. Louis lineup for Sunday's 4-3 win over the Nationals in Grapefruit League play resembled the team's ideal Opening Day arrangement. It featured Wong batting ahead of the pitcher, an assignment that wouldn't seem favorable for the second baseman's run-scoring and stolen-base opportunities. Injuries will inevitably force the Cardinals to rearrange their lineup at various points throughout the season, but Wong's routine placement near the bottom of the order renders him a lower-end fantasy option at the keystone, despite the strong support he'll likely provide in terms of batting average.
Feb 28 2018Wong hopes to earn the green light on the bases this spring, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. "I have to establish the fact that I want to run, and show them that I'm having success running," Wong said.Even though Wong expects to bat eighth in front of the pitcher this year, which can suppress steals as the pitcher is often looking to bunt, he believes he can improve on last year's eight steals (on 10 attempts) if he can earn the green light. "I want to get that aggressiveness built in, so when the games start all I'm thinking is going, going, going and being able to react to the rhythm when I should," Wong said. He stole a base in Tuesday's game, and earned the praise of manager Mike Matheny, who thinks Wong is at his best when he's impacting the game in all facets. "He can change the game with his speed. He can change the game by doing the little things," Matheny said. Even though Wong will likely sit against lefties (75 career wRC+), he has the potential to hit 10-plus home runs and steal 15-to-20 bases while hitting for a decent batting average. Given how tough it is to find steals late in drafts, he makes for a fine middle-infield option in deeper leagues.
Oct 1 2017Wong (back) is not in the lineup Sunday against the Brewers.Wong has missed five straight games with a back ailment and will again be withheld from the lineup for the season's final game. Breyvic Valera takes over at second base, batting leadoff.
Sep 30 2017Wong (back) remains out of the lineup Saturday against the Brewers. He will miss a fifth straight game with an ailing back. Greg Garcia will start at the keystone and lead off. Wong was hitting just .170/.302/.208 in 53 at-bats this month prior to the injury.
Sep 29 2017Wong (back) is out of the lineup against the Brewers on Friday, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Wong will miss a fourth straight game due to nagging back problems that have plagued him for a majority of this past month. In his place, Greg Garcia is set to start at the keystone while batting atop the order.
Sep 28 2017Wong (back) is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cubs, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Wong continues to deal with back tightness -- an issue he has bothered him all month -- so he'll open on the bench for a third straight contest. The 26-year-old will remain a day-to-day case; Matt Carpenter is manning the keystone in his stead, opening up a spot for Jedd Gyorko to start at the hot corner.
Sep 27 2017Wong (back) is not in the lineup against the Cubs on Wednesday.Wong will be held out for the second straight game while dealing with back tightness, an injury that has plagued him for basically all of September. In his place, Matt Carpenter slides over to man the keystone while Jose Martinez draws a start at first. Wong should be considered day-to-day moving forward.
Sep 26 2017Wong is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Cubs due to tightness in his back, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Wong has been in-and-out of the lineup of late with his sore back, and he will be back on the bench Tuesday after the pain returned in his final at-bat of Monday's contest. Greg Garcia is manning the keystone Tuesday in Wong's absence.
Sep 17 2017Wong (back) is starting at second base and batting seventh during Sunday's game against the Cubs.Wong was lifted from Friday's game with lower back tightness and was subsequently held out of Saturday's contest as the back ailment lingered. The second baseman is apparently feeling better and he'll rejoin the starting lineup as the Cardinals look to take the final game of the series from the Cubs and remain in the competitive N.L. Central playoff race.
Sep 16 2017Wong (back) will be held out of the starting lineup Saturday against the Cubs, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.A back issue has plagued Wong since early September. Wong tried to fight through it after maintenance day Thursday, but manager Mike Matheny could see that the 26-year-old still "wasn't right" while running the bases and promptly removed Wong from Friday's game in the fifth inning. His status for the series finale is up in the air.
Sep 15 2017Wong was taken out of Friday's game against the Cubs due to lower back tightness. This has been a lingering issue for Wong, as the second baseman wound up missing five games earlier this month due to a back problem. Although this doesn't seem like anything worse than before, the club may be forced to keep him sidelined for a few days if he re-aggravated the issue to a certain point. Consider him day-to-day for now, but Greg Garcia could be in line for some extra time on the field in the event that Wong needs a couple days off.
Sep 15 2017Wong was removed from Friday's game against the Cubs following the top half of the fifth inning, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports. There has yet to be word on whether Wong sustained any sort of injury, although it isn't clear when he could've gotten hurt. Greg Garcia was put into the game at second place in Wong's place. If he did suffer a setback, there will likely be information regarding his condition following the conclusion of Friday's series opener.
Sep 14 2017Wong is not in the Cardinals' lineup Thursday against the Reds, Jim Hayes of FOX Sports Midwest reports.Alex Mejia takes the lefty-hitting Wong's place against southpaw Amir Garrett, which isn't a surprise., considering Wong's platoon leanings. Since returning from a triceps injury July 14, Wong has rekindled fantasy interest, compiling a .298/.381/.427 line with 22 RBI in 51 games, though he'll often ride the pine when the handedness doesn't favor him. He should return to the card Friday against Cubs right-hander John Lackey.
Sep 13 2017Wong, who went 2-for-5 with an RBI single and a double in Tuesday's 13-4 win over the Reds, is 3-for-9 with three walks and two runs in the three games since returning from a back injury.Wong missed five contests earlier in September due to his ailment and seems to progressively be ramping back up. The 26-year-old's season average has vaulted back over .300 with his most recent production and he's now just an RBI short of matching his second-best total in that category (42), which he set in 2014.
Sep 9 2017Wong (back) is in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Pirates, FOX Sports Midwest reports.A back issue sidelined Wong for five games, but he's been cleared to return to second base against right-hander Chad Kuhl. He will bat seventh in the order between Yadier Molina and Harrison Bader. Wong hasn't provided much power or speed this season, but he is batting .300/.385/.453 against right-handed pitching.
Sep 8 2017Wong (back) isn't in the lineup Friday against the Pirates.Wong will miss his fifth consecutive game Friday night. At this point in time, the Cardinals have yet to give specific information regarding the severity of Wong's injury. Greg Garcia will start at second base and hit seventh with Wong out of the lineup.
Sep 7 2017Wong (back) is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Padres.Wong will remain on the bench for a fourth straight game as he continues to nurse an ailing back. Consider him day-to-day for now; Greg Garcia will draw another start in his place at the keystone.
Sep 6 2017Wong (back) remains out of the lineup Wednesday against the Padres. He will miss his third game in a row with an ailing back. Greg Garcia will start at second base and hit sixth against righty Dinelson Lamet.
Sep 5 2017Wong (back) is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Padres.Wong is one of four Cardinals regulars out of action; Matt Carpenter (shoulder), Tommy Pham (shoulder) and Dexter Fowler (hip) are all sitting as well. The extent of Wong's back issue remains uncertain, but the Cardinals have not formally ruled him out for the remainder of the series.
Sep 4 2017Wong is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Padres due to a back issue, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports. It was originally thought to be a regular day off for Wong, but he's apparently dealing with a back ailment. The severity of the issue isn't clear at this point, but more should be known as he's further evaluated in the coming days. Greg Garcia is starting for him at the keystone Monday.
Sep 4 2017Wong is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Padres.Wong will get the day off after starting 14 straight games at the keystone for St. Louis, going 14-for-56 (.250) with two homers and two stolen bases over that stretch. Greg Garcia will draw the start at second base in his stead.
Aug 27 2017Wong went 1-for-3 with a solo homer and a walk Sunday against the Rays.Wong has some pop in his bat, but he's more of a line drive hitter, which is why only four of his 31 extra-base hits in 88 games have left the yard. The second baseman has still been a pleasant surprise at the plate, notching career highs across the board with a .316/.396/.460 line. Wong's been a disappointment on the base paths, though, swiping just 13 bags since the start of last season after totaling 35 steals over his previous two campaigns.
Aug 26 2017Wong went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 7-3 loss to the Rays.Wong brought the Cardinals to within 5-3 with a 421-foot shot in the fourth, but that would turn out to be their final run of the night. The 26-year-old's breakout season includes a stellar .314/.394/.452 line and a current eight-game hitting streak.
Aug 24 2017Wong, who went 3-for-5 with a double, two stolen bases and three runs in Wednesday's 6-2 win over the Padres, is now hitting .353 (6-for-17) in the four games since missing last Friday's contest with a hip injury.Wong now has a six-game hitting streak and is enjoying an excellent August, as evidenced by a .392/.447/.568 line that is partly comprised of 10 extra-base hits (eight doubles, one triple and one home run). The surging second baseman has seven multi-hit efforts during the month as well, while all three components of his .314/.396/.445 season line represent career-best figures.
Aug 19 2017Wong (hip) is starting at second base and hitting sixth Saturday against the Pirates, Derrick Goold of the St. Loius Post-Dispatch reports. He was a late scratch Friday due to a minor hip injury, but will be back in for the matinee against righty Chad Kuhl. Wong is hitting .327/.405/.452 with one home run, one steal, 20 runs and 15 RBI in 104 at-bats since the All-Star break.
Aug 18 2017Wong was scratched from Friday's starting nine just 90 minutes before the first pitch due to a hip injury, Jim Hayes of 590 The Fan reports.Wong is still available off the bench for Friday's game, according to John Mozeliak, the Cardinals' President of Baseball Operation. Although it appears to be a minor setback if Wong is available off the bench, consider the second baseman day-to-day until the club releases more information on his injury.
Aug 16 2017Wong went 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored during Wednesday's loss to Boston.Wong entered Wednesday's game with a 1.041 OPS for the month and has now registered a hit in 13 of 15 August games. Considering the upside he's flashed in spurts throughout his young career, the 26-year-old second baseman is worth a look in the majority of settings. It's also encouraging for Wong's fantasy upside that the Cardinals are trending in the right direction as a ball club.
Aug 14 2017Wong went 2-for-4 with an RBI single, a triple and a run in Sunday's 6-3 loss to the Braves.Wong extended his hitting streak to eight games with Sunday's production, a tally that included his third triple of the season and eighth RBI in the last eight contests. The 26-year-old second baseman has already raised his season average 22 points in August, and all three components of his .307/.399/.443 season line represent career highs.
Aug 11 2017Wong went 2-for-2 with an RBI from a sacrifice fly, a double and a walk in Thursday's 8-6 win over the Royals.Wong's torrid start to August continues, as he's now reached safely in all nine games of the month. The 26-year-old shortstop is slashing .412/.488/.618 over that stretch and vaulted his season average back up over the .300 mark (.303) with Thursday's production.
Aug 7 2017Wong went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run, four RBI and two runs scored during Monday's win over Kansas City.Wong is now 11-for-31 at the dish in August with a homer, three doubles, seven RBI and six runs through eight games. He's long flashed the potential to be a strong fantasy asset and is receiving consistent playing time, so taking a speculative flier on Wong could pay off.
Aug 7 2017Wong went 3-for-5 with an RBI double and two runs in Sunday's 13-4 win over the Reds.Wong started a Cardinals rally from an early 3-0 deficit with a second-inning two-bagger that plated Jose Martinez, his third multi-hit effort in six August contests. The 26-year-old's hot streak to open the month has his line at .391/.462/.522 over the aforementioned stretch, and his current .296 season average is a robust 41 points above his career .255 figure.
Aug 4 2017Wong went 2-for-4 with a double in Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Brewers.Wong turned in the only multi-hit effort on the night for the Cardinals, his second such outing in the first three games of August. The 26-year-old has also hit in four straight, while all three components of his .291/.377/.408 line -- as well as his .785 OPS -- all represent career highs.
Jul 28 2017Wong is out of the starting lineup Friday against the Diamondbacks.Southpaw Robbie Ray is on the bump for Arizona, posing a bad matchup for Wong and leading manager Mike Matheny to start Matt Carpenter at the keystone in his stead. The 26-year-old is 10-for-39 since the All-Star break, as he continues to slot in as the everyday second baseman in a crowded Cardinals' infield.
Jul 25 2017Wong went 2-for-4 with an RBI infield single, a double and a run in Monday's 8-2 win over the Rockies.Wong notched his first RBI since back on June 14 and recorded his third two-hit effort since the All-Star break. The 26-year-old second baseman was in the midst of one of his hottest stretches of the season when he was sidelined with a triceps injury on June 15, and despite cooling off some since his return, his season line remains solid at .298/.390/.425.
Jul 22 2017Wong is not in the starting lineup Saturday against the Cubs, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Jose Martinez, who is dealing with a head injury after being struck by a foul ball Friday, is unavailable to play, so the Cardinals will keep Wong on the bench as their reserve outfielder. Matt Carpenter slides over to the keystone, and Luke Voit fills the void at first base.
Jul 20 2017Wong is out of the lineup Thursday against the Mets.Wong has started four games in a row at the keystone, but will be relieved by Matt Carpenter for the afternoon series finale. Over those four games since the break, Wong is 6-for-15 at the plate to bring his season batting average up to .304, though none of those hits have been of the extra-base variety.
Jul 17 2017Wong went 2-for-4 with a run in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Pirates.Wong had gone 0-for-3 in his return to the lineup on Friday and then gotten the day off Saturday, so Sunday's pair of singles represented his first time hitting safely since his return from a disabled list stint due to a triceps injury. The 26-year-old's season average sits at a career-best .300, while his .389 OBP and .438 slugging also represent high-water marks.
Jul 14 2017Wong returns to the lineup for Friday's game against the Pirates, Jim Hayes of Fox Sports Midwest reports.Wong was activated off the DL (triceps) on Tuesday, and will be back at the keystone for the first game of the second half. The 26-year-old has battled injuries for the better part of the past two months, but could slide into a viable role with the Cardinals, backing up Matt Carpenter at second and gaining starts when he moves over to first or third. On the year, Wong is hitting .301/.393/.444 with one home run and 19 RBI in 47 games.
Jul 12 2017Wong was activated from the 10-day disabled list Tuesday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Wong will be on the active roster when the Cardinals resume play Friday in Pittsburgh, though he may need to fight for playing time at second base against presumed starter Matt Carpenter. Nonetheless, the 26-year-old looked great in four rehab starts with Double-A Springfield, going 6-for-15 with four RBI, and was hitting .450 over his last six games before suffering a triceps strain. Staying healthy has been a challenge for Wong this season, but he'll look to rebound with a strong second half, and could earn an everyday role with continued offensive success.
Jul 9 2017Wong (triceps) went 3-for-5 with four RBI from a run-scoring double and three-run home run in Double-A Springfield's win over Frisco on Sunday. The rehabbing infielder has gone 6-for-15 over his four games at Springfield and appears ready to rejoin the Cardinals following the All-Star break. Wong's success in his current minor-league stint are an extension of the success he was enjoying at the big-league level before his latest injury, as he hit .450 over 22 plate appearances in the six games prior to being sidelined.
Jul 6 2017Wong (elbow) is 2-for-6 with a double, a walk and a run through two rehab games with Double-A Springfield.Wong got both his hits in Wednesday's debut, going 0-for-3 with the walk Thursday. The 26-year-old has encouragingly gotten through both contests without setbacks by all accounts, and it remains to be seen if the Cardinals will opt to activate him before the All-Star break or afford him extra recovery time by waiting until the start of the season's second half.
Jul 4 2017Wong (triceps) was scheduled to ramp up his baseball activities Monday, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports. The team has been quiet about how Wong has responded, but the infielder had been on tap for both hitting and fielding. He suffered a setback last week and ultimately required a cortisone shot, so Monday's scheduled workout was to see how his arm reacted to the treatment. Once deemed ready, Wong will head out on a rehab assignment before rejoining the Cardinals.
Jul 4 2017Wong (triceps) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Springfield on Wednesday, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Wong took a bit of batting practice and got some reps in the infield Monday, and it sounds as if his arm responded favorably enough to get sent on a rehab assignment. Having been out since June 14, it's not entirely clear when he'll be back, as a projected return date lies right around the All-Star Game.
Jun 30 2017Wong (triceps) will not rejoin the team until after the All-Star break, Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Wong had complained of some lingering pain while taking swings last week, further delaying the beginning of a minor-league rehab assignment. The veteran infielder wants to be completely pain free before making his return to live action, so the Cardinals will give him plenty of time before getting him back in the big leagues -- though he may still begin rehab games within the next week. Paul Dejong and Greg Garcia will continue seeing starts at second base until Wong is back to full health.
Jun 27 2017Wong (triceps) has been able to take full-strength swings and make throws during his recovery but is still feeling some pain in his arm, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. With some lingering discomfort in his right arm, Wong may not be deemed ready to begin his rehab assignment during the middle of this week as originally expected. The 26-year-old explained that the team wants him to be "pain free, even when resting" before he returns to any kind of game action.
Jun 25 2017Wong (triceps) is expected to begin his rehab assignment mid-week and could be activated by next weekend, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Wong appears to be progressing well in his recovery, and his rehab assignment would presumably last just a couple of games under the current projected timetable. The 26-year-old has been a key offensive component for the Cardinals this season but has been hampered by injuries, with his current disabled list stint serving as his second of the campaign.
Jun 23 2017Wong (triceps) hopes to begin a minor-league rehabilitation assignment next weekend, Mitchell Forde of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. "I'm pretty close," Wong said. "We're just trying to make sure there's no pain. I tried to come back quick the last time and got back on the DL."Wong lasted six games after coming off an earlier DL stint due to an elbow injury before getting sidelined again with a right triceps strain. He excelled during his brief return, hitting safely in all six contests and tallying multi-hit efforts in three of them. That burst pushed his season line to an impressive .301/.393/.444, making Wong one of the Cardinals' most effective offensive weapons of the season's first half.
Jun 15 2017Wong was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a right triceps strain, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports. This is another tough break for Wong, who was enjoying his best offensive season to date before landing on the disabled list for the second time in less than a month. A timetable for his return hasn't been hashed out yet, but given the injury is to his throwing arm, this could require a longer stint on the disabled list than his first injury. In the meantime, Paul DeJong was recalled from Triple-A Memphis to take his spot on the roster, and he should see the bulk of time at second base in Wong's place, though Greg Garcia could also get some looks.
Jun 14 2017Wong was prematurely lifted from Wednesday's game against the Brewers with right forearm tightness, David Solomon of 550 KTRS reports.Wong was 1-for-2 with an RBI double and a run scored before being replace by Greg Garcia in the sixth inning. This is a tough break for Wong, who returned from the DL just a week ago. The severity of the injury isn't known at this point, but his condition should be updated once he is evaluated further Thursday.
Jun 12 2017Wong went 2-for-4 with a run-scoring double, another two-bagger and a run in Sunday's 6-5 win over the Phillies. The 26-year-old has been raking in the three games since returning from his disabled list stint due to an elbow injury, going 5-for-10 with two doubles, an RBI and three runs over the weekend series. Wong is in the midst of his best offensive season, with all three components of his .294/.393/.434 line representing career highs.
Jun 10 2017Wong went 2-for-4 with two runs scored during Saturday's win over the Phillies. The second baseman went 1-for-2 and reached base three times in his return from the disabled list Friday, so Saturday's outing was another solid performance. Wong owns an impressive .288 batting average and .390 on-base percentage through 43 games this season, but he's done little in the home-run (one) and stolen-base (three) columns.
Jun 9 2017Wong (elbow) was activated from the disabled list Friday, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Wong completed a three-game rehab assignment earlier in the week, and although he only picked up one hit (albeit a home run) during that time, the Cardinals felt that he was healthy enough to return to full action. The emergence of Paul DeJong may make the playing time situation interesting moving forward, although there's been no word that suggests that Wong's role as a starter is in jeopardy. To make room for him on the roster, Jhonny Peralta was designated for assignment.
Jun 7 2017Wong (elbow) was lifted from Wednesday's rehab game after just one at-bat, Dave Eminian of the Peo Star Journal reports.Wong was 0-for-1 before he was replaced by JR Davis in the third inning. It's unclear what forced him out of the contest at this point, but more should be known once the Cardinals update his status. He was expected to one activated from the DL on Friday, though that may not be the case anymore.
Jun 7 2017Wong (elbow) said he was lifted from Wednesday's rehab game for precautionary reasons, Derrick Goold of the St. Loius Post-Dispatch reports.Wong apparently felt some tightening in his right arm before exiting the contest in the third inning, though he said it loosened up and felt good afterwards. While the issue doesn't appear to be anything overly serious, it's possible that it will push his return date past Friday. More should be known as the Cardinals update his status in the coming days.
Jun 7 2017Wong (elbow) went 0-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and a run in High-A Peoria's 3-2 loss to Kane County on Tuesday. Most important, Wong was able to hit and throw without any setbacks to his injured elbow. If his rehab appearances continue going off without a hitch, the second baseman is likely to be activated Friday for the start of a weekend series versus the Phillies.
Jun 5 2017Wong (elbow) could be activated from the 10-day DL prior to Friday's game against the Phillies, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.General manager John Mozeliak said Friday is the soonest Wong would be activated, which means he will miss more than the minimum 10 days. Once activated, he should resume his duties as second base, starting against most right-handed starting pitchers.
May 30 2017Wong has no structural damage in his elbow according to MRI results taken Monday, Derrick Goold of the St. Loius Post-Dispatch reports. This is good news, as it appears Wong has just been bothered by broken up scar tissue in his left elbow. The 26-year-old said he is set to receive treatment and expects to come off the disabled list once he is eligible. Paul DeJong will continue to fill in for him at second base until then.
May 28 2017Wong (elbow) will be sent for an MRI and additional testing Monday in St. Louis, Derrick Goold of the St. Loius Post-Dispatch reports.Wong landed on the 10-day DL on Sunday due to a left elbow strain, and although the tests could just be precautionary, it appears the infielder might be on the shelf for longer than the minimum stay. The tightness in his afflicted elbow has persisted through Sunday, which has resulted in a major hindrance to his swing. More information, potentially including a rough timetable, will be provided once the results are disclosed.
May 28 2017Wong was placed on the 10-day DL with a left elbow strain, Jim Hayes of Fox Sports Midwest reports.Wong was lifted from Saturday's lineup due to elbow soreness, and it didn't take long for the infielder to land on the disabled list retroactive to May 27. While he's on the shelf, Greg Garcia will draw the start Sunday, and likely receive extra infield reps. Furthermore, the team could elect to give some of those starts to Paul DeJong, who was recalled from Triple-A Memphis in a corresponding move.
May 27 2017Wong was scratched from Saturday's starting lineup due to left elbow soreness,Jim Hayes of Fox Sports Midwest reports.Wong was held out for two straight games earlier this week with the same injury and it appears to have flared up again Saturday, so consider him day-to-day for now. Greg Garcia, who filled in at second base, will likely continue to start in his place.
May 27 2017Wong was scratched from the Cardinals' lineup at the last minute Saturday, Derrick Goold of the St. Loius Post-Dispatch reports.Wong recently missed a few games with elbow discomfort, something that may be flaring up again to cause his removal, though the team will likely provide reasoning in due time. Greg Garcia will take over at second base and bat eighth.
May 25 2017Wong (elbow) went 1-for-3 with a two-run single and a walk in Wednesday's 6-1 win over the Dodgers. As predicted by manager Mike Matheny, Wong only missed a couple of starts before returning from his sore elbow, and he proved his swing was in working order when he opened the scoring with a second-inning hit that plated Jedd Gyorko and Adelmys Diaz. The 26-year-old has put together an impressive May, hitting safely in all but two of his starts during the month and slashing .306/.389/.387 with five doubles, seven RBI, six walks and 10 runs.
May 24 2017Wong (elbow) is back in the lineup Wednesday against the Dodgers, batting eighth and playing second base, Eric Stephen of TrueBlueLA.com reports. After missing two games due to elbow discomfort, Wong seems to be back to full health. He'll take over his normal spot at the keystone, moving Jhonny Peralta back into a bench role.
May 23 2017Wong (elbow) is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Dodgers, Eric Stephen of TrueBlueLA.com reports. This will be the second contest in a row Wong has missed after exiting a game over the weekend with elbow discomfort, though the Cardinals remain optimistic that he won't be sidelined too long. Jedd Gyorko will start at second base for the game, opening up a spot for Jhonny Peralta to draw a start at third base. Wong should be considered day-to-day until the Cardinals update his status.
May 22 2017Wong (elbow) remains day-to-day and manager Mike Matheny reports that he is "very optimistic" that he won't be sidelined long, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Matheny noted that Wong had already showed improvement overnight from Saturday to Sunday, but he was still held out of Sunday's contest as a precaution. The affected elbow is on the second baseman's non-throwing arm, which plays a part in the manager's prognosis of a quick return to action. Wong did report feeling a "pop" in the elbow while taking warmup swings in the on-deck circle before his first at-bat Saturday, but there is no structural damage feared at the moment.
May 21 2017Wong (elbow) is out of the lineup Sunday against the Giants.Wong exited Saturday's 3-1 loss in the fourth inning with left elbow discomfort, which he experienced following his first at-bat. Manager Mike Matheny noted after the game that preliminary examinations of Wong's injury didn't reveal anything concerning, according to Alaina Getzenberg of MLB.com, so it appears the Cardinals are viewing the second baseman as day-to-day. Greg Garcia will replace Wong at the keystone during the series finale.
May 20 2017Wong was prematurely lifted from Saturday's game against the Giants with left elbow discomfort, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Wong was 0-for-1 before Greg Garcia came on to replace him at second base after just three innings. The severity of the injury is currently unclear, though more should be known following the conclusion of Saturday's contest.
May 18 2017Wong went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI in Wednesday's extra-inning loss to the Red Sox.It's his first multi-hit performance in nearly two weeks, as Wong has seen his slash line on the season slide down to a still-solid .273/.360/.421. The 26-year-old has been productive despite spending most of the year hitting in front of the pitcher, but his fantasy upside will remain somewhat limited unless he can work his way higher in the Cards lineup.
May 13 2017Wong is out of the lineup Saturday against the Cubs.Wong has struggled at the plate recently. He went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in Friday's outing and has posted a bleak .156 batting average over the last seven games. He'll head to the bench Saturday while Greg Garcia starts at second base.
May 5 2017Wong will bat leadoff Friday against the Braves. With Dexter Fowler (shoulder) out of action, Wong will take over atop the batting order, shooting up from the eight-hole. The 26-year-old Wong is sitting with an OPS just south of .900 through 25 games, with just one more strikeout (11) than walk (10) in 89 plate appearances this season. He's hit safely in nine straight games.
May 3 2017Wong went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Brewers. He extended his modest hitting streak to eight games, pushing the 26-year-old's slash line on the season to .278/.381/.472. Perhaps the most impressive things about Wong's start to the year has been his plate discipline. While hitting eighth has certainly helped buoy his walk rate to a career-high 11.8 percent as other teams work around him to get to the pitcher, Wong's 12.9 percent strikeout rate is also a career low.
Apr 24 2017Wong went 2-for-2 with an RBI double, two walks, a stolen base and two runs in Sunday's 6-4 win over the Brewers. The 26-year-old put in a full and highly productive day that represented his best all-around effort of the season. Wong has raised his average from .171 to .229 in the last four games on the strength of a 5-for-13 tally that includes two doubles, a triple, four RBI, three walks, a pair of stolen bases and four runs.
Apr 22 2017Wong went for 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and a walk in Friday's 6-3 win over the Brewers. After compiling just three hits over his first 27 at-bats of the season, Wong is now 5-for-15 with a double, a triple, three RBI, a walk and five runs over his last five games. Friday's effort represented his first multi-hit game of the season and the fourth time he's hit safely over the last five contests. While his average still sits at an unsightly .214, the 26-year-old has his slugging up to .405 and could be emerging from his funk at the plate.
Apr 21 2017Wong went 1-for-4 with a three-run triple Thursday abasing Milwaukee. The Hawaiian second baseman ripped a 2-1 offering from Zach Davies into the right-field corner to clear the bases and tie the game in the second inning, although his following trips to the plate proved to be unfruitful as the Cardinals fell 7-5 to the Brewers. Wong is in the midst of one of his better stretches at the plate this season, although that isn't saying much as his .200 batting average over the past week has actually raised his batting average. However, with Jhonny Peralta (illness) landing on the DL and Jedd Gyorko sliding over to fill in for him, Greg Garcia poses as the only competition for playing time at the keystone, meaning Wong likely will continue to get plenty of opportunities to right the ship.
Apr 18 2017Wong went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Monday's 2-1 win over the Pirates.Wong blasted an Ivan Nova third-inning offering 396 feet to right center in the third, opening the scoring on the night. Like the majority of his teammates, the 26-year-old has endured a rough season at the plate thus far, and he'd checked into Monday having gone 1-for-15 over the previous four games in which he'd logged an official at-bat. Wong could continue to be spelled by Greg Garcia on occasion, as despite Monday's production, his average still sits at .167.
Apr 16 2017Wong is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Yankees.Wong's hasn't contributed much on offense so far this season as he's slashing just .148/.258/.222 over 10 games. Greg Garcia will get the nod to start at second base over Wong on Sunday night.
Apr 11 2017Wong is out of Tuesday's lineup against the Nationals. With the left-handed Gio Gonzalez taking the mound for Washington, the Cardinals will look to get an extra righty bad in the lineup. Jedd Gyorko will get the nod to start at second base and hit fifth while Wong heads to the bench.
Apr 11 2017Wong went 1-for-4 with a two-run double in Monday's 14-6 loss to the Nationals. The 26-year-old second baseman may have only four hits in 20 at-bats thus far this season, but two of those have been doubles and he's generated three RBI overall. Wong has also walked three times while only striking out once, and his production Monday brought his average back to the Mendoza Line.
Apr 10 2017Wong is back in the lineup for Monday's outing against the Nationals. After getting Sunday off, Wong is back at second base and hitting eighth. While he's still being viewed as the Cardinals' primary option at second base, he could remain vulnerable to being rested more frequently until he elevates his underwhelming .188 batting average.
Apr 9 2017Wong is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds, Jim Hayes of FOX Sports Midwest reports.Though Wong has recorded just three hits in 15 at-bats this season, he had a minor breakthrough in Saturday's game, walking in two of his five plate appearances while collecting his first RBI of the season. He still seems to have a grasp on primary duties at second base, but Wong may end up sitting out more frequently than the rest of the regulars in the Cardinals lineup until he heats up at the plate. Jedd Gyorko will cover the keystone Sunday, opening up third base for Jhonny Peralta.
Apr 5 2017Wong went 1-for-4 in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to the Cubs.Wong got his first start of the season and reached base safely for the second time in as many games. The 26-year-old expressed some dissatisfaction late in spring training upon hearing the news he'd be platooning with Jedd Gyorko to start the season, but a .192 average in spring training didn't exactly provide him with much leverage in the matter. Wong will look to bounce back after a 2016 season where his numbers at the plate were down virtually across the board compared to his 2015 production.
Apr 4 2017Wong will bat eighth and play second base in the Cardinals' game against the Cubs on Tuesday. With right-hander Jake Arrieta taking the mound Tuesday, Wong will make his first start of the year at second place in favor of Jedd Gyorko. As expected, the two will be operate in a platoon to open the season.
Apr 2 2017Wong was left out of the Cardinals' Opening Day lineup in favor of Jedd Gyorko, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Wong had voiced concern earlier this month about the possibility of platooning at second base, but it appears that is exactly what he will have to do to start the season. The 26-year-old did not perform particularly well during spring training, slashing a disappointing .192/.276/.288. He will likely to need to demonstrate a noticeable amount of improvement during his opportunities at second base this season if he wants to reemerge as an everyday player.
Apr 2 2017Wong was left out of the Cardinals' Opening Day lineup in favor of Jedd Gyorko, Jennifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Wong had voiced concern earlier this month about the possibility of platooning at second base, but it appears that is exactly what he will have to do to start the season. The 26-year-old did not perform particularly well during spring training, slashing a disappointing .192/.276/.288. He will likely to need to demonstrate a noticeable amount of improvement during his opportunities at second base this season if he wants to reemerge as an everyday player.
Mar 25 2017Wong could open the season in a platoon at second base, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports.Manager Mike Matheny cited the need to keep Greg Garcia, Jedd Gyorko and Matt Adams fresh as a reason for Wong potentially not seeing everyday at-bats. Wong entered Saturday hitting .190/.277/.262 this spring, which also hasn't helped his case. Gyorko could serve as the right-handed compliment to Wong, while Garcia's glove could earn him an occasional start at the keystone against either righties or lefties. When investing in Wong, factor in the likelihood that he only starts against right-handed pitchers this year.
Mar 7 2017Wong went 1-for-3 with an RBI single in Monday's 2-1 extra-inning Grapefruit League loss to the Twins.Wong was not only responsible for the Cardinals' lone run of the day with a two-out third-inning single, he also turned in the play of the day on defense in the fifth, securing a Max Kepler liner and uncorking a throw to second to cut down Byron Buxton for the double play. A 2011 first-round pick, Wong saw a major drop in production last season across the board while playing in just 121 games. His forgettable campaign included a seven-game stint in Triple-A Memphis and appearances at all three outfield spots in addition to second base. Wong will presumably have a chance for a reset this coming season but is off to a slow start this spring, slashing just .214/.267/.214 with Monday's RBI and a walk over 14 at-bats.
Mar 1 2017Wong (shoulder) says his shoulder soreness is minor and does not concern him, Jim Hayes of Fox Sports Midwest reports.Wong has been dealing with soreness in his left shoulder since injuring it in September, but that hasn't kept him out of baseball activities this spring. The 26-year-old has already played in two Grapefruit League games thus far, going 2-for-5 with a walk. Monitor the situation going forward, but don't expect it to be a major hindrance on Wong's play.
Feb 28 2017Wong (shoulder) went 1-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout in his Grapefruit League debut Monday.Wong is still apparently experiencing shoulder soreness from an injury he incurred in September, but consistent with previous reports, he seems to be intent on playing through the pain. It doesn't seem to be hampering him much given his ability garner a hit while manning the keystone for a good portion of the game. This situation will be one to monitor moving forward, but it's a good sign that the 26-year-old can still be productive in games even with the ailment lingering into spring training.
Feb 25 2017Wong (shoulder) admitted Saturday that he's still dealing with soreness in his left shoulder, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports. The issue dates back to an injury Wong suffered back in September in a game against the Cubs, and he said he began to feel pain when he resumed throwing in January. An MRI cleared Wong of any structural damage, however, and at this point the plan is for him to play through the soreness, which will certainly be something to monitor through the early weeks of the season.
Nov 8 2016Wong (shoulder) is expected to be the Cardinals' primary option at second base in 2017, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Coming off a subpar 2016 showing that saw Wong hit just .240/.327/.355, it wouldn't have been a surprise to see the Cardinals turn to the likes of Jedd Gyorko to take the reigns at second base in 2017. However, the club's current plan is to give Wong another chance to impress, courtesy of their belief that he can become an elite defensive force.
Oct 2 2016Wong (shoulder) is not in the lineup for Sunday's regular-season finale against the Pirates.Wong has come off the bench a few times to pinch hit but hasn't started a game since Sep. 23 against the Cubs. Jedd Gyorko will once again man the keystone, batting seventh for the Cardinals.
Oct 1 2016Wong (shoulder) remains out of the lineup Saturday against the Pirates, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports. He has not made it into the lineup since Sept. 23, but he has been available off the bench in each of the last three games. Jedd Gyorko will start at second base and hit seventh Saturday.
Sep 30 2016Wong (shoulder) remains out of the lineup Friday against the Pirates.Wong will miss his seventh straight start as a result of the shoulder injury, but he's come off the bench in each of the last two games, suggesting a weekend return to the lineup is possible. The 25-year-old was treated with a cortisone shot Tuesday.
Sep 29 2016Wong (shoulder) is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Reds.Wong will come off the bench again Thursday while he continues recovering from his sore shoulder. Jedd Gyorko will man second base for the Cardinals.
Sep 28 2016Wong (shoulder) remains out of the lineup Wednesday. He received a cortisone shot in his shoulder Tuesday, and it's unclear when he'll be able to return to the lineup. Greg Garcia will start at second base and hit eighth Wednesday.
Sep 27 2016Wong received a cortisone shot in his shoulder Tuesday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Wong's absence from the lineup has come courtesy of a shoulder injury that he sustained while playing left field Sept. 23. Although he received the injection, there's yet to be word regarding when he'll be available to play again. For the month, Wong has posted a .220/.317/.420 line over 17 games.
Sep 26 2016Wong is not in the lineup Monday against the Reds.Wong will sit out for the third day in a row after seeing his batting average over the past week sit just above the Mendoza Line. Greg Garcia will take over at the keystone Monday night.
Sep 25 2016Wong is out of the lineup Sunday against the Cubs.Wong has seen his starting opportunities pick up since the start of September, but after going just 4-for-30 (.133 average) over his last 11 appearances, he'll hit the bench for the second day in a row. Matt Carpenter will move over from first base to cover the keystone.
Sep 13 2016Wong is not in the lineup for Tuesday's matchup with the Cubs. Thanks to a strong second half, Wong reminded everyone why he was the main second baseman going into the year, but he'll get a day off Tuesday nonetheless. Greg Garcia will fill in for him at the keystone.
Sep 12 2016Wong will hit leadoff in the Cardinals' batting order Monday against the Cubs.Wong owns a .352 OBP since the All-Star break and a .433 OBP this month, so manager Mike Matheny decided to use him out of the leadoff spot and Matt Carpenter out of the three hole in Monday's matchup against Kyle Hendricks and the Cubs.
Sep 8 2016Wong went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, a walk and two runs against the Brewers on Thursday. He's now hit safely in six straight games, with three homers in that span -- two of them against Milwaukee. Unfortunately, Wong's also spent four games on the bench in that span. This has mostly been a lost season for the Hawaiian second baseman, but if he can stay hot when he gets his chances down the stretch, he'll raise his stock for next year.
Aug 29 2016Wong homered, stole a base, and drove in two runs in a 2-for-4 game in Monday's win over Milwaukee.Wong made a statement in his first start since August 19. The Cardinals were resting Greg Garcia on Monday, and considering Garcia's .256/.375/.359 line still outclasses Wong's .240/.325/.333 marks, Wong will likely remain primarily in a bench role. Still, a performance like this will at least make the Cardinals more comfortable using him to spot infielders like Jedd Gyorko and Jhonny Peralta down the stretch.
Aug 4 2016Wong is out of the lineup Thursday against the Reds.He is hitting .316 with a double and a triple over the past week, but his season numbers are still pretty mediocre. It's nice that he is 5-for-5 on stolen-base attempts, but the quantity his owners had hoped for isn't there, and that is an understatement as it pertains to his power numbers, as he has just one home run on the season. Greg Garcia will get the start at second base and hit seventh Thursday.
Aug 3 2016Wong is not in the Cardinals starting lineup on Wednesday, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.Wong is playing well for the Cardinals over his last 10 games, hitting .300 with two stolen bases in 30 at-bats. He will get the day off as Greg Garcia gets the start at second base. Wong should be back in the lineup on Thursday as the Cardinals take on Brandon Finnegan and the Reds.
Jul 30 2016Wong went 2-for-4 in Saturday's 11-0 loss to the Marlins. The 25-year-old was the only Cardinals bat to tally a multi-hit effort on a forgettable night overall. Wong has gone 5-for-9 over the first two games of the series against the Marlins and has nudged his season line up to .245/.332/.324.
Jul 30 2016Wong went 3-for-5 with a single, double, triple, two RBI and a run in Friday's 11-6 victory over the Marlins. The struggling second baseman was a thorn in the side of Marlins pitching all night, beginning with an RBI double in the second. Wong followed up with an RBI single in the fifth that brought home Yadier Molina and also had a triple against Marlins starter Jose Urena. The 25-year-old has put together his best month of the season in July, slashing .275/.373/.451 over 51 at-bats, a tally that includes five doubles and a pair of triples.
Jul 27 2016Wong pinch hit for the pitcher in the ninth inning of a tied game, and delivered a go-ahead RBI double that would up being the game-winner.Mets closer Jeurys Familia had just blown his first save of the season before facing Wong, having given up an RBI double to Yadier Molina. Wong, hitting just .234 on the season while starting the majority of games, delivered his ninth extra base hit of the season, driving in just his 11th run. Young second baseman Greg Garcia, who started the game at second Wednesday, has come on strong and hit and impressive .307 over 101 at-bats. Garcia went 0-for-4 on Wednesday, but should continue to steal sizable chucks of playing time from Wong moving forward.
Jul 26 2016Wong is not in the lineup for Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader with the Mets.Wong was scheduled to sit out Monday before that game was rained out, and manager Mike Matheny will stick with the lineup he was going to use for that contest in the first game of Tuesday's twin bill. While Wong will not make two starts Tuesday, he could return to the lineup for the second game of the day.
Jul 25 2016Wong is out of Monday's lineup against the Mets.He has now sat against righties twice in the last three days, which essentially means that right now the Cardinals view him as a bench bat. Greg Garcia will start at the keystone and lead off Monday against Noah Syndergaard and the Mets.
Jul 23 2016Wong is out of the lineup Saturday against the Dodgers, FOX Sports Midwest's Jim Hayes reports.Even with righty Kenta Maeda on the hill for the Dodgers, Wong will take a seat in favor of Greg Garcia at second base Saturday. Wong has yet to really get going, even after coming back from Triple-A, as he is hitting .229 in July after hitting .227 in June.
Jul 21 2016Wong is out of the lineup for Thursday's tilt with San Diego.Wong will get his fourth start off since the end of the All-Star break as Greg Garcia fills in at second, batting eighth. Wong is having a lackluster month of July, going just 7-for-32 (.219) with only four runs and three RBI this month.
Jul 17 2016Wong is out of the lineup Sunday against the Marlins.Wong is expected to see more playing time in the absence of Matt Carpenter (oblique), but manager Mike Matheny still doesn't appear comfortable enough to start him against left-handed pitching. That will be the case Sunday, as Matheny will give the nod to Jedd Gyorko at second base against southpaw Adam Conley.
Jul 7 2016Wong will see an increase in playing time at second base with Matt Carpenter (oblique) on the disabled list.He started at the keystone and hit eighth Thursday afternoon, getting the nod with right-hander Tyler Glasnow taking the ball for Pittsburgh (he finished the game 1-for-3). Wong's performance since returning from Triple-A Memphis has been only slightly better than his start to the season, but it would hardly be surprising to see him take over as the starter at second base against righties until Carpenter's eventual return. For the season, Wong is carrying a .237/.320/.301 line, but he may have a path to a more prominent place in the batting order in Carpenter's absence if he's able to heat up at the plate.
Jul 4 2016Wong is out of the lineup for the second straight game Monday against the Pirates, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune reports. The experiment with Wong in center field appears to be coming to a close, as Tommy Pham will get his fourth straight start Monday afternoon. Furthermore, the Cardinals are facing left-hander Jon Niese in the afternoon matchup, and Wong is just 5-for-30 (.167) against southpaws this season.
Jul 3 2016Wong is out of the lineup Sunday against the Brewers.Wong drew the start at second base Saturday in order to give Matt Carpenter the day off, but during his recent resurgence, most of Wong's starts have came in center field. Tommy Pham will occupy that role Sunday afternoon, leaving Wong to return to a reserve role.
Jul 2 2016Wong went 1-for-4 with a two-run triple and run in Saturday's 3-0 victory over the Brewers. The 25-year-old brought Stephen Piscotty and Yadier Molina home with his fourth-inning three-bagger, his third on the season. Wong continues to struggle through a mediocre season at the plate overall, with his current .230 average sitting 32 points below the career-best .262 figure he tallied in 2015. The pair of runs he drove in Saturday brought his season total to a paltry nine over 161 at-bats, leaving him well off the pace of the 61 he managed last season.
Jul 1 2016Wong is not in Friday's lineup against the Brewers.Wong has started five of the past six games for the Cardinals, but will be out of the lineup as Tommy Pham will man center while batting eighth Friday. The 25-year-old has been 9-for-35 since coming back from the minor leagues in mid-June, and will likely be back in the lineup for Saturday's contest.
Jun 27 2016Wong is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Royals. With left-hander Danny Duffy on the mound for the Royals, Wong will take the night off while right-handed hitter Tommy Pham takes his place in center field to optimize the matchups. Wong is hitting .269/.296/.269 over his last seven games.
Jun 26 2016Wong is out of the lineup Sunday against the Mariners, MLB.com's Greg Johns reports.Wong has started four of the last five games for the Cardinals, making a resurgence by switching from second base to the outfield. He'll take a seat Sunday, however, as lefty James Paxton will toe the rubber for Seattle, presenting Wong with a matchup problem -- the 25-year-old has just a .602 career OPS against southpaws.
Jun 24 2016Wong is not in the lineup against Seattle on Friday.Wong is getting a day of rest after seeing action the last five games. In his place, Tommy Pham will man center field duties. When Wong returns to the lineup, he'll look to break out of a slump he's been mired in as he's just 7-for-46 (.152) over his last 16 games.
Jun 20 2016Wong is in the starting lineup for Monday's contest against the Cubs.Wong will be starting his second game in center field since being recalled from Triple-A Memphis on June 17. After hitting .429/.529/.929 at Memphis, Wong has gone 1-for-7 with the big club.
Jun 18 2016Wong is in the lineup Saturday, batting second and starting in center field. With a crowded infield situation in St. Louis, Wong got some reps in center field during his brief stint in the minors this month. He'll have that limited experience put to the test Saturday as he'll get the start in center over Randal Grichuk. If Wong proves to be capable in the outfield, it could give him a clearer path to a regular role moving forward. At the dish, Wong will bat second in the order against Nick Martinez.
Jun 17 2016Wong has played seven games at Triple-A Memphis and is 12-for-28 with four home runs and a triple.Since being optioned to Memphis on June 6, Wong has dominated at the plate. He has a 1.458 OPS and has knocked 11 RBI while contributing 10 runs. While he's traditionally played second base, Wong has primarily been playing center field, and excelling while doing so. Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says that Cardinals' manager Mike Matheny has considered playing Wong in the outfield with the big club, and if he sustains his improved batting at Triple-A Memphis, he may have the chance to do so in the near future.
Jun 17 2016Wong was recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Friday.Wong destroyed Triple-A pitching (1.458 OPS) during his seven games in the minors, which prompted the Cardinals to bring him back up a week and a half after optioning him to Memphis. Wong will not immediately reclaim a starting spot in St. Louis with Matt Carpenter now handling the regular duties at second base, but he did see action in center field while in the minors, so he figures to rotate in at several positions for the time being.
Jun 14 2016Wong has been getting some time in center field for Triple-A Memphis.Wong has seen lots of time at second base for the Cardinals in the past couple years, but was recently sent down to Memphis due to his recent struggles. Throughout 49 games with the Cardinals this season, the 25-year-old is batting .222/.306/.286 with just one home run and five RBI in 126 at-bats. He is working to gain experience in the outfield to boost his versatility and according to manager Mike Matheny, give himself a chance to help the team. The center field position has been a sore spot for the Cardinals this season, and Wong could be playing in that spot sometime in the near future.
Jun 6 2016Wong was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Monday.Jhonny Peralta is expected to be activated from the disabled list Tuesday, so this move was likely made in order to make room for the Cardinals' starting shortstop. Wong had been in a platoon with Jedd Gyorko at second base but was struggling offensively, owning just a .222 average, and will now spend time in Triple-A until he is needed again.
Jun 5 2016Wong is out of the lineup Sunday against the Giants.Wong will be passed over in favor of Greg Garcia for the second time in three games Sunday evening. The young infielder's days of offering fantasy utility appear to be waning down, as Matt Carpenter is expected to usurp him at second base once Jhonny Peralta (thumb) is activated from the DL later in the week. Wong certainly hasn't done himself any favors with his bat, posting a career-low .600 OPS through 124 at-bats this season.
Jun 3 2016Wong is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Giants.Greg Garcia will start at second base as Wong sits for the second time in three games (both absences against opposing right-handed starters), and for the fourth time in the team's last six games. Wong has struggled all season long, managing four extra-base hits (one homer) in 120 at-bats. General manager John Mozeliak implied to Bernie Miklasz of ESPN that Matt Carpenter will shift to second base when Jhonny Peralta returns from the DL.
May 29 2016Wong is out of the lineup Sunday against the Nationals.Wong was given the day off Saturday, but that came as no true surprise, as southpaw Gio Gonzalez started for Washington. Now, Wong will remain on the bench despite right-hander Stephen Strasburg scheduled to take the mound. Saturday's absence marked the end of a six-game streak in which Wong had appeared in the starting lineup, but after collecting just three base hits over that stretch, manager Mike Matheny may be starting to get fed up with the 25-year-old's consistency at the plate. Jedd Gyorko will make his second straight start at the keystone Sunday.
May 20 2016Wong is out of the lineup Friday against the Diamondbacks. He will take his customary seat on the bench with lefty Patrick Corbin on the mound for the Diamondbacks. Jedd Gyorko slots in at second base and hits sixth, as he continues to occupy the short side of the second base platoon.
May 14 2016Wong is out of the lineup Saturday against the Dodgers, SB Nation's Eric Stephen reports. With lefty Scott Kazmir on the mound for the Dodgers, Wong will take his usual seat on the bench to start Saturday's game. Jedd Gyorko will start at the keystone and hit seventh Saturday. Wong's numbers should improve as the season goes on against righties, but he will typically sit against southpaws as long as Gyorko is healthy.
May 11 2016Wong will start at second base in Wednesday's matchup with the the Angels.Wong had the day off Tuesday, but did come in for a pinch-hitting situation. He will start at second, and bat eighth in the order for Wednesday's interleague tilt against the Angels. Wong has not recorded a hit since May 2nd, but will look to turn things around against a struggling Matt Shoemaker.
May 6 2016Wong is out of the lineup Friday against the Pirates.Wong only has a .200 batting average against left-handed pitchers this season and struggled with them mightily last year, so he'll head to the bench with left-hander Francisco Liriano throwing for Pittsburgh. Jedd Gyorko will take his place at second base for Friday's contest.
May 4 2016Wong is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Phillies.Wong hasn't been able to get much going at the plate this season, although he did hit his first home run of the season Monday. Regardless, he'll cede the start at second base to Jedd Gyorko on Wednesday.
May 2 2016Wong hit a two-run home run, his first, in Monday's win over the Phillies.Wong had yet to even hit a single extra-base hit this year. He struggled to hit for power in the second half last season, and dating back to the All-Star break he had just two home runs and a .308 slugging percentage in his previous 295 at-bats. Wong's 2016 line is still a brutal .233/.304/.283, so he desperately needs this home run to spark a hot streak.
Apr 30 2016Wong (illness) is back in the lineup Saturday, hitting eighth against the Nationals. He made a pinch-hit appearance Friday, but will get his first start in seven games Saturday. It's been a really rough start to the year for Wong, as he has zero extra-base hits, but with just 60 plate appearances under his belt this season, it's too soon to panic in most formats.
Apr 29 2016Wong (illness) is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Nationals.Although he's served as a pinch hitter in each of the last two games, Friday marks Wong's sixth straight game out of the lineup. In the case of Friday's lineup, however, it's possible that manager Mike Matheny simply wanted to keep Jedd Gyorko's right-handed bat on the field even though the Cardinals are facing righty Stephen Strasburg.
Apr 28 2016Wong (illness) is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Diamondbacks.Thursday marks the third consecutive game out of the lineup due to an illness for the second baseman. Wong was able to enter Wednesday's game as a pinch-hitter and collect a base hit, so his illness may be mostly behind him, but manager Mike Matheny will stick with Jedd Gyorko at second base for at least Thursday's series finale in the desert.
Apr 27 2016Wong (illness) is not in the lineup Wednesday against Arizona. The second baseman's malady has kept him out of the lineup for the second consecutive day, so it will be worth monitoring his progress ahead of Thursday's series finale. Jedd Gyorko will start at second base in place of Wong.
Apr 26 2016Wong (illness) had to be quarantined from teammates Tuesday afternoon, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports. He is clearly quite ill, so owners will want to check on his status before deploying him over the Cardinals' next couple games. Jedd Gyorko started in his place Tuesday.
Apr 25 2016Wong only saw one unsuccessful at-bat in Monday's game against the Diamondbacks while dealing with an illness, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Wong came into Monday's game as infield relief, but committed an error during his lone inning on the field, not to mention he struck out during his single plate appearance. While Monday's outing was horrid, there's still the chance his illness will pass overnight and he'll return to the starting lineup Tuesday.
Apr 24 2016Wong is is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres.Wong will be replaced by Jedd Gyorko for Sunday's matchup. Wong went hitless in his last game, and will get some rest while Gyorko will take his place at second base and bat seventh.
Apr 23 2016Wong is batting leadoff Saturday against the Padres.Wong has been primarily hitting in the bottom third of the order to start the season, but manager Mike Matheny will shake up the lineup Saturday by having Wong as the table-setter. The 25-year-old second baseman got off to a slow start this season, but he's turned the corner a bit over the last week by going 3-for-10 with two steals. He'll be going against Cesar Vargas, who is making his big league debut Saturday.
Apr 17 2016Wong is not in the lineup Sunday for the second straight day.Wong is off to a dreadful start with the bat, owning just a .450 OPS through 10 games, so manager Mike Matheny decided to hold him out of a couple games this weekend in order to get a mental break. Jedd Gyorko will make another start at second base Sunday.
Apr 16 2016Wong is out of Saturday's lineup against the Reds.He will sit with lefty Brandon Finnegan on the mound for the Reds, as has been the case regularly against southpaws in the early going. Jedd Gyorko will get the start at second base and hit seventh Saturday.
Apr 13 2016Wong is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Brewers.Wong has gotten off to a sluggish start this season, batting a mere .222 with seven strikeouts through seven games, and he'll get the day off Wednesday after posting an 0-for-4 against Milwaukee on Tuesday. Jed Gyorko will start at second base in his place.
Apr 9 2016Wong went 3-for-6 and scored three times in Saturday's 12-2 rout of the Braves. All of his hits were singles as Wong remains without an extra-base hit through the team's first five games. The 25-year-old has a career slugging percentage of just .373, so owners can expect to see more of this going forward. Considering second base is fairly shallow, Wong is more than serviceable. However, hitting eighth in the order certainly limits his opportunities and makes a night like Saturday (six at-bats) a rarity.
Apr 6 2016Wong is back in the lineup Wednesday against the Pirates, batting sixth and playing second base.Wong was left out of the lineup for Tuesday's contest as manager Mike Matheny went with a middle infield pairing of Jedd Gyorko and Aledmys Diaz. However, Wong still managed to get three at-bats off the bench, collecting one hit in the process. Wong is one of the few left-handed bats at manager Mike Matheny's disposal, so he'll draw into the lineup against Pittsburgh righty Juan Nicasio.
Apr 5 2016Wong is not in the lineup against the Pirates on Tuesday, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune reports.Wong had a tough Opening Day, going 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts in Sunday's loss. Jedd Gyorko will slide over to the keystone in his stead, while Aledmys Diaz will make his major league debut and start at shortstop.
Mar 28 2016Wong (knee) is in the lineup for Monday's spring game, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports.Wong bruised his knee while playing defense in Saturday's exhibition contest, but with him back in the lineup just two days later, it's clear he was not dealing with any sort of serious setback. Wong will start at second base for the Cardinals on Opening Day and serve as the club's regular second baseman.
Mar 26 2016Wong was officially diagnosed with a left knee contusion Saturday but manager Mike Matheny said that he doesn't expect the second baseman to miss much time, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Wong left Saturday's game after making a diving attempt at a ground ball and landing awkwardly on his knee. "When I missed it, I took my mind off the fact that I was diving for a ball and literally landed on me knee. As I stood up...I could feel it kind of being tighter in my knee," said Wong after Saturday's game. Wong should be considered day-to-day and he figures to get back on the field once the swelling in his knee subsides.
Mar 26 2016Wong suffered a bruised left knee Saturday but said that he will be back on the field "as fast as possible," Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Wong suffered the injury making a diving play in the field in Saturday's game against the Nationals. The injury isn't believed to be serious at this point, but it'll be something to monitor over the next few days. Wong is batting .263 with three doubles and a steal this spring.
Mar 2 2016Wong agreed to a five-year extension with the Cardinals on Wednesday that carries him through his arbitration years and his first year of free agency, ESPN's Mark Saxon reports. The deal, which also includes an option for a sixth year, makes sense for Wong, as he gets some security prior to his first year of arbitration, and it gives the Cardinals some cost certainty. Wong is a valuable second tier second baseman in fantasy as double-digit homers and double-digit steals are a safe bet as long as he stays healthy. He hits for more power against righties than lefties, but the rest of his splits are about the same, so he does not necessarily need a platoon. However with Jedd Gyorko on board, it seems likely that Wong will sit once or twice a week, especially against tougher southpaws. Another factor that will impact his value is where he ends up hitting in the order. There is a good chance that Matt Carpenter and Stephen Piscotty occupy the top two spots, which would leave Wong hitting eighth when he starts, which would limit his runs and RBI totals.
Oct 4 2015Wong is out of the lineup for Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader.Wong will sit the night cap after starting at second base and going 0-for-3 at the plate in the early game. Pete Kozma will take over at the keystone.
Oct 3 2015Wong was a late scratch from Saturday's lineup due to a rain delay.Wong was scratched from the lineup as the Cardinals await Saturday's game --- it's been delayed nearly an hour due to rain. Pete Kozma will get the start at second base and hit eighth in the batting order.
Oct 2 2015Wong is not in the lineup Friday against the Braves.Wong will join a handful of regular Cardinals out of the lineup Friday as St. Louis gears up for the postseason. Greg Garcia will get the start at second place and bat second in the batting order.
Sep 30 2015After going 0-for-4 in the first half of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Pirates, Wong bounced back with two doubles and two runs in the nightcap. He's now recorded multi-hit efforts in two of his last three games, which is promising as Wong attempts to end this season on a high note. The second half's been a major struggle for him, as he's hitting only .243 since the All-Star break and hasn't homered since way back on July 27. The good news is that means you can likely pick him up on the cheap in next year's drafts.
Sep 25 2015Wong is not in the lineup Friday against the Brewers. After an 0-for-4 day Thursday, Wong will get his second day off in the past three games. Greg Garcia will fill in at the keystone in his stead and bat seventh.
Sep 12 2015Wong (calf) is in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Reds.Wong will start Saturday for the first time since being scratched from Monday's lineup with the sore calf. He will man second base and hit sixth Saturday afternoon.
Sep 11 2015Wong (calf) is out of the lineup Friday. This will be his fourth straight game out of action, but the Cardinals are hopeful he will return later this weekend. Greg Garcia will start at second and hit seventh Friday.
Sep 10 2015Wong (calf) will not start Thursday, but hopes to resume playing this weekend, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports.Wong is dealing with a strained calf and not simply tightness, which is why he has been sidelined longer than originally anticipated. While Wong would like to return this weekend, the Cardinals will likely make sure his setback does not become a long-term issue, so don't be surprised if Wong's absence extends into next week.
Sep 9 2015Wong (calf) remains out of the lineup Wednesday against the Cubs.Manager Mike Matheny suggested Wong's removal from Monday's lineup was precautionary, labeling it a "healthy scratch," and the second baseman's ability to pinch-hit Monday seemed to confirm as much. However, Wong was out of the lineup Tuesday and is sitting again Wednesday, though it's at least possible his absence has more to do with the lefty that's on the mound for the Cubs (Jon Lester) than the calf injury. Regardless, continue to consider Wong day-to-day for the time being.
Sep 8 2015Wong (calf) is not in the lineup Tuesday for the second straight day.Manager Mike Matheny downplayed Wong's injury Monday, but the fact he is sitting out again indicates he is still dealing with the setback. Assuming Wong's injury is indeed minor, he should return to action at some point in the next few days.
Sep 7 2015Wong was a late scratch Monday with a tight calf, but manager Mike Matheny deemed it a "healthy scratch," Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. As a result of Wong being yanked from the lineup, Matt Carpenter will slide over from third base to start at second, while Mark Reynolds will enter the lineup at third. It appears to be an issue minor in nature, but it will cost him Monday's contest at a minimum.
Sep 3 2015Wong went 3-for-5 with an RBI in a 4-3 loss to Washington on Wednesday.Wong was mired in a dreadful second half slump, but he appears to be showing some signs of life as of late. After hitting just .202 in August, Wong has 14 hits over his last nine games. The power has almost completely disappeared though, as he's failed to homer since July 27. Seeing as how the swing seems to be turning around, a home run should be right around the corner, especially for someone as talented as Wong.
Aug 28 2015Wong went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in a 5-3 win over the Diamondbacks on Thursday.Wong has been mired in a dreadful slump in the second half of the season, but this performance is a nice sign going forward. He now has a double and an RBI in three straight games, so he may be coming out of it. Wong is still batting below .200 in August and almost all of his production has come over the last three games.
Aug 23 2015Wong remains out of the lineup Sunday against the Padres. After a tough July, Wong's performance has taken an even worse turn in August, as he's slashing a horrific .145/.224/.145 for the month. The slump had already resulted in a move downward in the lineup, and it will now keep Wong out of the lineup for the second time in as many days. Greg Garcia, who was called up from Triple-A Memphis on Sunday and is in the lineup, could push Wong for playing time at second base.
Aug 22 2015Wong is out of the lineup Saturday. There is no denying that Wong has been slumping at the plate lately, as he has just two hits in his last 25 at-bats. Matt Carpenter will move over to second base with Mark Reynolds manning the hot corner Saturday.
Jul 31 2015Wong went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI in a 7-0 win over Colorado on Friday. The Hawaiian is having a fantastic season for St. Louis and is now batting third with the injury to Matt Holliday. Wong is a true five-cat player right now, as the only stat he was lacking was RBI. The move to the three-hole may lower his stolen base potential, but it should raise his lackluster RBI total.
Jul 28 2015Wong delivered for a second straight game Monday, providing all the Cardinals offense in the 4-1 win over the Reds by smacking a grand slam, finishing the night 1-for-3.Wong is finishing the month of July strong and appears to be quickly pulling out of the slump that plagued him for most of the month.
Jul 27 2015Wong went 3-for-5 with a double and run scored in the loss to Atlanta Sunday.Wong has had a slow July, hitting just .225/.295/.288 so it's possible the big night is a sign of things to come. He's now collected seven hits in his last 19 at-bats, putting together a four-game hitting streak.
Jul 19 2015Wong went 1-for-8 with a home run in the Cardinals 18-inning loss to the Mets.Wong scratched the only run across for the Cardinals in two games worth of play, barely eking the ball over the right field wall in the 13th inning to keep the game alive. He's now hitting for a .769 OPS and is rapidly approaching the dozen home runs he hit last season.
Jul 10 2015Wong will return to the lineup Friday against the Pirates.Wong was cleared to rejoin the Cardinals on Thursday, and came off the bench to record a single and hit by pitch in his two plate appearances. He will start at second base and bat second Friday, but will face a tough matchup in Gerrit Cole.
Jul 10 2015Wong (concussion) came off the bench in Thursday's game against the Pirates, recording a single and hit by pitch in two plate appearances.Wong entered the game as a pinch-hitter and stayed in the field for three innings. He will likely rejoin the lineup for Friday's game against Gerrit Cole and the Pirates.
Jul 9 2015Wong (concussion) is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Pirates.Wong suffered a mild concussion Tuesday and it will hold him out of the lineup through at least Thursday's contest. Matt Carpenter will once again start at second base, while Mark Reynolds will start at third.
Jul 9 2015Wong (concussion) has cleared concussion tests and will be available off the bench Thursday, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.Wong missed Wednesday and Thursday because of the concussion issue, but will now be available to the Cardinals if needed. He's not in the starting lineup Thursday, but it wouldn't be surprising if he returns at some point during the weekend series.
Jul 8 2015Wong (concussion) is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Cubs.Wong left the first game of Tuesday's double-header with a head contusion, but reports surfaced that he actually suffered a mild concussion. He has not been placed on the 7-day concussion list at this point, but Matt Carpenter will slide over to second base to will in for Wong on Wednesday.
Jul 7 2015Wong (head) passed a concussion test but is unlikely to play in Tuesday's nightcap, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports.Wong left the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader with a head contusion, and while he's not dealing with a concussion, the Cards will likely hold him out of Game 2. Manager Mike Matheny said Matt Carpenter is "probable" to get the nod at second base in Wong's place.
Jul 7 2015Contrary to previous reports, Wong actually did sustain a "mild" concussion in the first half of Tuesday's doubleheader, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports. He will be evaluated and the Cardinals are already considering potential roster moves as Wong might be headed for the 7-day concussion DL. An update should be available Wednesday morning regarding a timetable for Wong's return, but owners may be without him until after the All-Star break. Matt Carpenter and Pete Kozma are the options to fill in at second base that are currently on the big league roster.
Jul 7 2015Wong (concussion) is out of the lineup for the second half of Tuesday's doubleheader.Matt Carpenter will get the start at second base, as Wong will sit as expected despite getting cleared during concussion tests. Look for Wong to return sometime this week, and he should be considered day-to-day.
Jul 7 2015Wong departed Tuesday's game with a head contusion, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.Wong departed the game after three at-bats, going 1-for-3 with a strikeout. The details of his condition are unknown at this time, but a further update should be available after the game. Wong was replaced by Matt Carpenter at second base, and it seems unlikely Wong will be able to play in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader.
Jul 1 2015Wong is back in the lineup Wednesday and will bat leadoff against the White Sox.Wong was replaced in the lineup by Pete Kozma on Tuesday, but still managed to get two at-bats as a pinch hitter in the extra innings loss. He'll be back atop the order Wednesday against Chicago lefty Jose Quintana.
Jun 30 2015Wong is not in the lineup Tuesday against the White Sox.Wong started the last six games, but he'll get the day off as Pete Kozma enters the lineup at second base to face lefty Chris Sale. Wong is currently riding a five-game hitting streak, and he has 11 total hits over that span.
Jun 27 2015Wong went 2-for-4 with a two-run double and a walk Saturday against the Cubs.He went cold for a stretch of time earlier this month, seeing his average plummet all the way from .314 on June 5 to .279 on June 23, but Wong has reheated of late -- he's got four straight two-hit games to his credit, with three doubles, a homer, six RBI and a 3:4 BB:K in that span. That's the kind of sharp work we expect from him.
Jun 25 2015Wong launched his ninth home run of the season Wednesday, going 2-for-4 with 2 RBI in the win over Miami.Wong has cooled a bit after his hot start to the season and is hitting just .179/.250/.410 over his last 10 games so hopefully Wednesday's homer is a sign he's coming out of his slump. For the season he's still hitting a very good .282/.337/.454.
Jun 21 2015Wong is out of the lineup Sunday against the Phillies.Wong's absence from the lineup Sunday likely relates to the left-handed Adam Morgan toeing the rubber for the Phillies. Randal Grichuk will sit atop the Cardinals' order, while Greg Garcia will enter the lineup in his place.
Jun 8 2015Wong hit his seventh home run in Monday's loss to Colorado on Monday.Wong went hitless in his other three at-bats but raised his slugging percentage to .474, tops in the National League. Wong's power isn't terribly impressive in a vacuum, but his seven home runs leads National League second basemen. His power stroke looks especially valuable at a position totally bereft of power this year.
Jun 6 2015Wong is out of the lineup Saturday against the Dodgers.Manager Mike Matheny has all but rid his lineup of lefty bats to counter Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw, with the lone exceptions being Matt Carpenter and pitcher Jaime Garcia. Pete Kozma will man second base and bat eighth as Peter Bourjos slots in atop the order.
May 31 2015Wong is not in the lineup Sunday against the Dodgers.Wong has sat just twice so far in the month of May, making it a good opportunity for manager Mike Matheny to get him a day off with southpaw Brett Anderson on the hill for the Dodgers. Pete Kozma will get the starting nod at the keystone in his stead.
May 28 2015Wong lead off Wednesday's win over Arizona with a home run before going hitless in his final four at-bats, finishing 1-for-5.Wong has been worth every bit of value owners could have hoped for and more this season. It's looking like he'll stick in the leadoff role moving forward which will only increase his stock further. Wong has been a top 5 second baseman so far this season.
May 25 2015Wong went 3-for-5 with a double, a pair of singles, and a run scored in Monday's 3-2 win over the Diamondbacks.Wong continues to impress in the leadoff role, where he's gone a combined 11-for-24 with seven runs, three walks, and two RBI since displacing Peter Bourjos from the role. Manager Mike Matheny isn't likely to tinker with an arrangement that's working, so Wong should remain one of the top second-base options for the near term, and quite possibly, the rest of the season.
May 24 2015Wong went 2-for-4 with a walk, a double and two runs scored against the Royals on Sunday. The lefty has gotten on base at a 47-percent clip since being moved to the top of the order and has raised his already impressive season OBP to .369. If he continues to get on base and score runs, Wong could be the permanent leadoff hitter for St. Louis, as Jason Heyward (hip) has struggled mightily in his first season with the team.
May 23 2015Wong went 1-for-3 with a pair of walks while batting leadoff Friday in a loss to the Royals.Wong has been great since being inserted into the leadoff spot, and if he keeps getting on base at this rate, it'll be tough to displace him. He's been one of the Cardinals' best hitters this season in general; if fantasy owners can quibble with anything, it's that he's just 3-for-6 on the basepaths and hasn't successfully swiped a bag since May 8.
May 20 2015Wong went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs in Wednesday's 9-0 rout of the Mets.Moved into the leadoff spot for only the fourth time all year, Wong helped energize the St. Louis offense. He's been the complete package for fantasy owners this year -- while his numbers aren't the flashiest out there, he's a legitimate five-category asset at a premium position.
May 18 2015Wong went 1-for-3 with a walk and the game-winning solo home run in a 2-1 win over Detroit on Sunday. After splitting time last season, Wong has flourished as a full-time starter and is on pace to easily surpass his 2014 totals of 12 home runs, 42 RBI and 52 runs scored, along with a batting average that's currently 62 points higher. Wong hasn't been nearly as active on the basepaths this season, but that could change if he eventually moves up in the order.

May 8 2015Wong was 3-for-5 with a three-run home run and a stolen base in the Cardinals win over Pittsburgh on Friday night. The red-hot Wong filled up the scoresheet again with his third homer and third stolen base. He's now hitting a robust .340, and has knocked in 15 runs on the season. Wong is a huge part of the Cardinals' 22-7 start.
May 6 2015Wong is out of the lineup Wednesday.Pete Kozma needed apparently needed to get a start despite Wong having eight hits in his last three games. There are few second baseman in the majors with better all-around skill sets than Wong, and he should be in the lineup most days for St. Louis.
May 4 2015Wong walked off against the Pirates Sunday, delivering the game-winning solo home run in the bottom of the 14th, he finished the game 3-for-4.Wong didn't get into the game until the top of the 8th and still managed to rack up four at-bats. May 3 2015Wong is out of the lineup Sunday against the Pirates, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.Wong has appeared in all 23 of the Cardinals' games to date, so manager Mike Matheny will give him a breather Sunday. Apr 22 2015Wong went 3-for-4 with a double, his first homer of the year and three RBI in Wednesday's win over Washington. His two-run jack gave the Cards a 3-0 lead early on, and after the Nationals came back to tie the game 5-5, Wong ended up striking again in the eighth inning, ripping a run-scoring double to put St. Louis ahead for good. After opening the season cold, Wong's lit aflame over the first two games of the series against Washington, going 6-for-8 with a walk, a homer and a steal.
Apr 19 2015Wong is back in the lineup Sunday against the Reds.Wong was left on the bench for the third time this season in Saturday's victory, as Pete Kozma received the start at second base. He was able to supply a pinch-hit single later in the contest, raising his average to .233 for the season. Wong doesn't seem at risk of losing out on a regular gig at second base, but until he's able to string together hits with more regularity, he'll probably remain near the bottom of the St. Louis lineup.
Mar 19 2015Wong is batting eighth in Thursday's spring training game, in a lineup that features most of the Cardinals' regulars, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The only regular not in the lineup is Jon Jay, who is recovering from an injury. Where Wong bats in the lineup could have a pretty huge impact on his value - not only does he get fewer at-bats, usually hitters in the eighth spot get to run less frequently due to the pitcher batting behind him.
Mar 9 2015Wong could deliver a significant amount of steals in 2015, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Manager Mike Matheny wants to stay aggressive and said their not looking to hold their runners back most of the time. This should help Wong build on his 20 stolen bases last year as he has a realistic shot at 40 steals in 2015.
Feb 24 2015Wong is expecting to improve in 2015 and would like to eventually hit out of the leadoff spot, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Wong was disappointed with his .249 batting average and .292 OBP and is working hard to get it high enough to warrant consideration for the leadoff spot. It's probably not going to happen in 2015 but it would obviously be a boon for his fantasy value if he was hitting atop the Cardinals order.

Sep 22 2014Wong is out of the lineup Monday against the Cubs, FOX Sports Midwest reports.Wong has made back-to-back starts starts at second base, but will give way to Pete Kozma for the second time in four games. Daniel Descalso will man the keystone and bat seventh against Mike Fiers. Look for Wong to continue sitting primarily against lefties.
Sep 13 2014Wong is out of the lineup Saturday against the Rockies. The Rockies are trotting out another left-hander in Franklin Morales, so Wong will ride the pine for a second straight day. He did manage to provide his 10th homer of the season before departing.
Aug 30 2014Wong is out of the lineup for Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Cubs.Wong got a start against a left-hander earlier in the week but manager Mike Matheny remains intent on limiting the 23-year-old's exposure to southpaws. Daniel Descalso will man the keystone and bat eighth in Game 1.

Fellow lefty swinger Daniel Descalso will take over at the keystone and bat eighth against right-hander Johnny Cueto. With Mark Ellis (oblique) on the DL, Wong figures to continue seeing near-everday playing time.

Apr 20 2014Wong is not in the lineup Sunday against the Nationals, FOX Sports Midwest reports.Wong was not able to break out of his slump Saturday, going 0-for-3 in the victory, so he'll sit for the second time in three days. With Mark Ellis now healthy, manager Mike Matheny has less incentive to be patient with Wong while he struggles, making a platoon arrangement at second base a distinct possibility.
Apr 18 2014Wong is not in the lineup Friday against the Nationals, FOX Sports Midwest reports.Manager Mike Matheny is stacking his lineup with right-handed bats against left-hander Gio Gonzalez, with Wong swapped out for Mark Ellis at second base. Wong has all of two extra-base hits so far this season (56 at-bats), and could be in danger of slipping into a strict platoon if he doesn't pick it up.
Apr 16 2014Wong went 0-for-3 with a strikeout Wednesday before being removed for a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning. The early departure was simply a matchup-based decision, as manager Mike Matheny wanted to use right-handed hitting Shane Robinson against Brewers lefty Will Smith. Wong is 12-for-50 (.240) with six strikeouts and three steals this season, and he was used as the Cards' leadoff hitter Wednesday while Matt Carpenter was given a day off from the starting lineup. Wong's playing time is worth monitoring more closely with the recent return of Mark Ellis from the disabled list.
Apr 15 2014Wong is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Brewers, according to FOX Sports Midwest.Wong will be held out in favor of Mark Ellis, who will make his Cardinals debut Tuesday night. Wong has held his own early this season, but he will likely cede some playing time to a healthy Ellis, particularly against left-handed pitching.
Apr 9 2014Wong went 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI-triple, and a stolen base in Tuesday's win over the Reds.Wong was hitting out of the second spot in the order and looks to be the front-runner to occupy that spot for the majority of the season as he's posted a .280 average and .400 OBP over his first 25 at-bats. The Cardinals have also hit Jhonny Peralta (.074/.194/.296), Peter Bourjos (.227/.261/.318) and Jon Jay (.250/.400/.625) in the second spot this year.
Apr 3 2014Wong was dropped to eighth in the order and went 1-for-3 with a double, the Cardinals only extra-base hit, in the 1-0 loss to Cincinnati Wednesday.Jhonny Peralta was in the second spot tonight. It appears the Opening Day lineup was no indication for how the second spot in the order is going to shake out. If Wong can win the spot full-time it'll certainly help his fantasy value.
Mar 31 2014Wong is hitting second for the Cardinals Opening Day game against Cincinnati. This is a big boost for Wong's fantasy value. Hitting in front of Matt Holliday, Allen Craig, and Yadier Molina should mean a lot of runs for the young second baseman. If he locks in to the second spot in the order this season expect big things.
Mar 12 2014Wong went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and a double in Tuesday's loss to the Mets. After starting 0-for-10 this spring Wong has gone 5-for-10 over his last three games. He also made an impressive grab on a popup into shallow right field. The Cardinals brought in Mark Ellis this offseason as insurance for the youngster, but it looks as though Wong is settling in nicely.
Jan 20 2014Wong is expected to open 2014 as the Cardinals' starting second baseman, MLB.com reports.Wong is arguably the top second base prospect in all of baseball, and the Cardinals thought highly enough of him to include Wong on the 2013 postseason roster. Though he only registered six at-bats in the playoffs, and was memorably picked off first base to end a World Series game, Wong's future in St. Louis remains bright. He's displayed strong contact and plate discipline skills throughout his minor league career, and last season he hit 10 home runs in 463 plate appearances for Triple-A Memphis. A disappointing major league stint -- nine hits in 59 at-bats -- aside, Wong should be the Opening Day second baseman, so long as he has a decent spring. The Cardinals did sign Mark Ellis, providing the team with some insurance in case Wong isn't quite ready.
Dec 12 2013Wong was named the Cardinals' Minor League Player of the Year on Wednesday after hitting .303 and driving in 45 runs in 107 games this season for Memphis.Wong will likely open next season as the Cardinals' starting second baseman.
Aug 19 2013Wong recorded the first two hits and first two stolen bases of his career in Monday's 8-5 win over the Brewers.Apparently, good things come in twos for Wong, who legged out a pair of infield singles. The early indication is that Wong will start against right-handed pitching, while Matt Carpenter slides over to the hot corner. Against left-handed starters, Carpenter will likely start at second base, while David Freese plays third.
Aug 17 2013Wong was 0-for-3 with a strikeout in his first start with the Cardinals.Wong failed to deliver twice with runners in scoring position. He is going to get an extended look unless he struggles mightily early. Expect him to be the primary second baseman for the Cardinals the rest of August.
Aug 17 2013Wong is not in the starting lineup against lefty Travis Wood on Saturday, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports. The left-handed hitting rookie will sit while Matt Carpenter mans the keystone and David Freese rejoins the lineup at third base Saturday afternoon.
Aug 16 2013Wong will make his major league debut Friday at the Cubs, manning second base and batting sixth in the order, FOX Sports Midwest reports. The 22-year-old is making the logical jump to the majors, after posting a thoroughly impressive .303/.369/.466 line with 10 home runs and 20 stolen bases in 412 at-bats at Triple-A Memphis this season. Moreover, his presence before September 1 implies the Cardinals' desire for Wong to be a part of the postseason roster. It remains to be seen, though, if he'll hold down a spot in the lineup on a daily basis.
Aug 15 2013Wong will be recalled from Triple-A Memphis before Friday's game, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports.Wong owns a .303/.369/.466 batting line for Memphis, and is 13-for-34 with two home runs over his last nine games. He's one of the more highly regarded prospects in a strong farm system, and it's probably safe to assume that the Cardinals didn't call him up to rot on the bench. Matt Carpenter is locked in to the lineup, which means that David Freese could be the odd man out. If that's the case, Carpenter figures to man the hot corner while Wong plays second base.
Jul 24 2013Wong returned to the lineup Tuesday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports, going 0-for-3 with a run scored for Triple-A Memphis after a groin injury kept him out the past two days. The injury appears to have been minor and Wong should be fine going forward. He is currently slashing .298/.358/.460 for Triple-A Memphis.
Jun 4 2013Wong won the Cardinals organization's player of the month award for May, hitting .375 with four homers and eight RBI for Triple-A Memphis, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Wong had a 15-game hitting streak during May and is now hitting .327/.363/.483 with four home runs, seven stolen bases, and 35 runs scored in 51 games with Triple-A Memphis. He's currently blocked at the MLB level and unless the Cardinals choose to move Freese or Carpenter it's unlikely he'll see regular playing time with them this season.
Mar 23 2013Wong was reassigned to minor league camp Saturday, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Wong put up a .835 OPS in 18 games this spring while in big league camp, but it wasn't enough to earn him the Cards' starting second base job. He was a long-shot to earn the position, but he'll be waiting in the wings in the minors, possibly at Triple-A Memphis to begin the year.
