Jan 22 2024McHugh announced his retirement from professional baseball Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh, 36, made the announcement on his Instagram account. The right-hander pitched for parts of 11 seasons in the big leagues, finishing with a career 3.72 ERA and 1.23 WHIP with a 967:280 K:BB over 992.2 innings. McHugh finished fourth in the American League Rookie of the Year voting in 2014 and eighth in the AL Cy Young voting in 2015.
Nov 6 2023Atlanta declined McHugh's (shoulder) $6 million option for 2024. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The club will pay him a $1 million buyout instead. McHugh had some uncharacteristic struggles in 2023, holding a 4.30 ERA and 47:22 K:BB over 58.2 innings. He also ended the season on the injured list with a shoulder issue. Still, with a 2.09 ERA and 149:26 K:BB over 133.1 frames from 2021-22, McHugh should have plenty of suitors.
Sep 19 2023McHugh (shoulder) is set to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Gwinnett. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh should be able to return to Atlanta's bullpen by the end of the week, following maybe one or two appearances on the farm. The 36-year-old multi-inning reliever was placed on the 15-day injured list Sept. 6 due to right shoulder inflammation.
Sep 6 2023McHugh was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with right shoulder inflammation. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's the same injury that landed McHugh on the IL back in April. McHugh will be eligible to return later this month, but at this juncture there is no timetable for his potential return to Atlanta's bullpen.
Jun 15 2023McHugh (3-0) picked up the win in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Tigers, striking out four batters over three perfect innings of relief. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Getting the call in the fifth inning with the score tied 5-5, McHugh completely shut down Detroit's offense over 44 pitches (29 strikes) before handing things off to Atlanta's late-inning crew, and the veteran right-hander was rewarded when his team took the lead in the sixth. It's the fourth time this season McHugh has worked two innings or more but the first time he's thrown more than 40 pitches since May 14, and the 35-year-old got four days of rest after that performance. Expect Michael Tonkin to handle any long-relief duties that might arise for Atlanta over the next few days. McHugh's 2.79 ERA through 29 innings on the season is solid, but it comes with a 1.55 WHIP and 19:10 K:BB.
May 13 2023McHugh will start Sunday's game against the Blue Jays, Kevin McAlpin of 680 The Fan Atlanta reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh will likely go a couple of innings for Atlanta before giving way to the bullpen. The right-hander has registered a 3.38 ERA over 13.1 innings with an 8:5 K:BB in his nine appearances.
Apr 6 2023McHugh (shoulder) said Thursday that he expects to start throwing again soon, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday with what has been diagnosed as right shoulder inflammation. He's dealing with some soreness and stiffness, but it doesn't sound like this is going to be an overly lengthy absence for the veteran Atlanta reliever.
Mar 17 2023McHugh gave up a hit and struck out one over two scoreless innings of relief in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Seeing his first game action of the spring, McHugh tossed 24 pitches, with 17 of them going for strikes. The veteran right-hander has posted a sub-1.00 WHIP in three of the last four seasons since moving into a relief role, and after collecting a career-high 17 holds in 2022 he's expected to fill a set-up role once again for Atlanta.
Jul 11 2022McHugh (2-1) picked up the win in Sunday's extra-innings victory over the Nationals, giving up one hit and one walks while striking out one over two scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander kept Washington off the board in the 11th and 12th innings, and got rewarded for his efforts when Atlanta finally pushed across a run. McHugh has been asked to pitch more than one inning in five of nine appearances since returning from the COVID-19 list in mid-June but he's handled the workload well, posting a 3.14 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 18:3 K:BB through 14.1 innings over that stretch with both of his wins on the year. McHugh hasn't recorded a hold since June 5 however, and he doesn't appear to be part of manager Brian Snitker's setup mix at present.
Jun 16 2022Atlanta reinstated McHugh (illness) from the COVID-19-related injured list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fellow reliever Jacob Webb was designated for assignment to clear room on the 40-man and 26-man active rosters for McHugh, who had been sidelined since June 7 after testing positive for the virus. Now that he's healthy again, The 34-year-old should reclaim a middle relief/setup role in front of closer Kenley Jansen. McHugh generated a 3.42 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 25:5 K:BB in 23.2 innings prior to landing on the IL.
Jun 7 2022McHugh was placed on the injured list Tuesday after testing positive for COVID-19, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The reported positive test aligns with the fact that Atlanta declined to specify a reason for McHugh's absence or which particular injured list he landed on. The veteran reliever is reportedly vaccinated, which means he'll be eligible to return whenever the illness has run its course, though it's difficult to say exactly when that will happen. Jacob Webb was acquired from the Diamondbacks for cash considerations and will take McHugh's place on the roster for now.
May 16 2022McHugh didn't allow a baserunner in two-thirds of an inning during Sunday's loss to the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Despite his own line being clean, McHugh got stuck with his second blown save of the season as entered the game with one out in the seventh inning and Atlanta holding a 3-2 lead, and he allowed an inherited runner to score. The veteran righty has been a disappointment so far in 2022, posting a 4.97 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 18:4 K:BB through 12.2 innings with only one hold.
May 7 2022McHugh (0-1) took the loss Friday as Atlanta fell 6-3 to the Brewers, giving up two runs on one hit and one walk in one-third of an inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander took over from rookie Spencer Strider to begin the sixth inning in a 2-2 tie and quickly made a bit of a mess, and while the loss ended up going on McHugh's ledger, it was Tyler Matzek who allowed both inherited runners to score. McHugh has a sharp 16:3 K:BB through 10.1 innings over 10 appearances this season, and while his 6.10 ERA and 1.55 WHIP are rough, his 2.10 FIP indicates he deserves a better fate.
May 3 2022McHugh struck out the only batter he faced in Monday's 5-2 win over the Mets to record his first hold of the season. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander was expected to fill a key setup role in Atlanta's bullpen, but McHugh has had a rocky start to the year, posting a 5.40 ERA and 1.44 WHIP despite a 14:2 K:BB through 8.1 innings. He's tossed more than one inning in three of his eight appearances but less than a full inning in four others, and that kind of unpredictable usage could limit his fantasy upside even if his ratios do improve.
Mar 15 2022McHugh agreed to a two-year, $10 million deal with Atlanta on Tuesday. The contract includes a club option worth $6 million for for 2024, which has a $1 million buyout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh was a key piece for Tampa Bay's bullpen in 2021 with a 1.55 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 74:12 K:BB across 64 innings, and he'll now join the defending World Series champions. The veteran right-hander featured strong strikeout and walk rates (30.0 and 4.9 percent, respectively) last year and should step into a high-leverage role in Atlanta's bullpen, though he's unlikely to be in the mix for many save chances.
Oct 11 2021McHugh will serve as the Rays' opening pitcher Monday against the Red Sox as part of a bullpen day in Game 4 of the ALDS, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Kevin Cash hasn't appointed a primary pitcher to work behind McHugh, as the Rays will instead likely turn to a cadre of arms to fill innings out of the bullpen. As Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network notes, all of Josh Fleming, JT Chargois, Pete Fairbanks, J.P. Feyereisen, Andrew Kittredge and Matt Wisler tossed 20 pitches or fewer in Sunday's 13-inning loss, so the Tampa Bay bullpen should be relatively fresh for Monday's contest.
Oct 9 2021McHugh (0-1) allowed three runs on two hits and a walk while striking out two in 1.2 innings to take the loss against the Red Sox in Game 2 of the ALDS on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh entered Friday's game with the Rays leading 5-3, but he gave up a pair of home runs that put him in line for the Game 2 loss. The right-hander had posted a 2.13 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 12.2 innings across his final eight appearances of the regular season, so he should still have the trust of manager Kevin Cash later in the series despite Friday's rough outing.
Sep 29 2021McHugh will start Thursday's game at Houston, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander will receive the start against his former team while serving as an opener ahead of Thursday's primary pitcher, Ryan Yarbrough. McHugh surrendered two runs his last time out Saturday but overall has a 2.53 ERA across 10.2 innings (six appearances) in September. The 34-year-old won't pitch deep enough to qualify for a potential victory against the Astros, but he could give the Rays multiple frames before giving way to Yarbrough.
Sep 21 2021McHugh secured his fifth hold in a win over the Blue Jays on Monday, firing two perfect innings during which he recorded two strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh's late-career transformation to dominant long reliever has been quite the positive development for the Rays bullpen, with the right-hander coaxing his ERA and WHIP down to 1.34 and 0.89, respectively, following his third scoreless multi-inning effort over the last four appearances. The timing and circumstances surrounding McHugh's deployment within games hasn't afforded the veteran many hold opportunities, but he's helped make up for that with six wins and a stellar 31.2 percent strikeout rate.
Sep 14 2021McHugh didn't factor into the decision in Monday's 8-1 loss to the Blue Jays, giving up three hits over 2.1 scoreless innings. He struck out one without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran hurler lasted exactly one turn through the Toronto order, and McHugh left the game in a bit of a jam with two runners on and one out in the third inning. Fortunately for him, Ryan Yarbrough didn't allow any of the inherited runners to score when he replaced McHugh. Unfortunately for the Rays, Yarbrough's night went south right afterward. McHugh will continue to handle a flexible role on the Tampa Bay staff and has worked two-plus innings in eight of 11 appearances since the All-Star break, posting a dazzling 0.90 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB through 20 innings with four wins, a save and a hold over that stretch.
Sep 13 2021McHugh will serve as the Rays' opening pitcher in Monday's game against the Blue Jays in Toronto, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh has 124 career MLB starts under his belt, but the Rays aren't expected to have him pitch more than 2-to-3 innings before turning the game over to the bullpen. Ryan Yarbrough is expected to be available in a bulk-relief role, making him the Rays pitcher most likely to factor into any decision. Since returning from the injured list in early August, McHugh has covered 13.2 innings over eight appearances, giving up three runs (two earned) on nine hits and four walks while striking out 10.
Sep 7 2021McHugh (6-1) was credited with the victory in an extra-inning win over the Red Sox on Monday, allowing an unearned run on two hits and two walks over two innings. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh became the pitcher of record in the wild win when the Rays rallied for three runs over the last pair of frames. The veteran right-hander ran into a little more trouble than usual and has now allowed one run in three of his last four appearances, but he's still boasting an elite 1.46 ERA and 0.92 WHIP across 55.1 innings.
Aug 26 2021McHugh (5-1) was credited with the win in a victory over the Phillies on Wednesday, allowing an earned run on three hits over two innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The outing was atypical for McHugh with respect to this season in a couple of ways, as the right-hander failed to record a strikeout in an appearance for the first time since May 30 while also allowing his first earned run since May 24. The two impressive stretches speak to McHugh's dominance, which is also reflected in his 1.43 ERA and 0.87 WHIP across 28 appearances (five starts).
Aug 21 2021McHugh picked up the save Saturday against the White Sox, striking out one over 1.2 innings without allowing a baserunner. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In classic Rays fashion, McHugh's two appearances this week include one start and one save. He retired all six batters he faced as the opener Monday against the Orioles and retired all five he faced Saturday. He was called on to protect a three-run lead with one out in the top of the eighth, and while he did allow a run to score on a groundout, he was able to kill the White Sox's rally and remained in the game to seal the deal after the Rays stretched the lead to four in the bottom of the frame. The save was the veteran's first of his nine-year career, and while he has an excellent 1.30 ERA on the season, the Rays' creative pitcher usage means he's likely to continue serving mainly in a multi-inning role rather than in the ninth inning.
Aug 15 2021McHugh will serve as the opener in Monday's game against the Orioles, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh has earned wins in two of his last three relief appearances, and he's allowed just one unearned run with a 43:4 K:BB and 0.70 WHIP in 30 innings across his last 15 appearances. The right-hander will be able to handle multiple innings if needed, but Josh Fleming is expected to serve as the primary pitcher.
Aug 12 2021McHugh (4-0) fired two scoreless innings on one hit while striking out three, earning the win over the Red Sox on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh entered the fifth inning in a tie and didn't allow any runs through the end of the sixth frame after the Rays took the lead. He has been nearly perfect this season, allowing just one earned run in 39.1 innings since May 6. The 34-year-old has a 1.41 ERA and 0.92 WHIP with a strong 12.9 K/9 in 44.2 innings this season.
Aug 8 2021McHugh fired a scoreless ninth inning during which he allowed a hit and a walk and recorded two strikeouts in a win over the Orioles on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander picked up right where he left off before going on the injured list with arm fatigue, producing his 14th straight scoreless outing. McHugh now has multiple strikeouts in 11 of his last 12 appearances as well, pushing his career-best strikeout rate to 36.7 percent.
Aug 7 2021McHugh (arm) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Saturday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh's weekend activation was expected after he threw a 21-pitch bullpen session Wednesday. The right-hander didn't require a rehab assignment prior to rejoining the major-league bullpen, and he'll be in the mix for ninth-inning duties with Pete Fairbanks (shoulder), J.P. Feyereisen (biceps) and Nick Anderson (elbow) sidelined.
Aug 4 2021McHugh (arm) completed a 21-pitch bullpen session Wednesday without issue and is expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list ahead of the Rays' weekend series in Baltimore, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Out since July 21 with right arm fatigue, McHugh appears to have performed well enough in his recent throwing sessions for the Rays to feel comfortable bringing him back from the IL without first sending him on a rehab assignment. Before McHugh was shut down, the Rays' closing picture was already in flux, and things have become even more unsettled with the team dealing away Diego Castillo to Seattle and with Peter Fairbanks (shoulder), J.P. Feyereisen (biceps) and Jeffrey Springs (knee) following McHugh to the IL. With that in mind, McHugh could factor into the mix for saves upon returning to the active roster.
Aug 3 2021McHugh (arm) will throw live batting practice Wednesday and, barring any setbacks, is expected to be activated for the weekend series in Baltimore, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The slider-spinning righty landed on the IL on July 25 with a dead arm, but he appears very close to rejoining the Rays. McHugh has established himself as a huge asset in Tampa Bay's bullpen, posting a 1.51 ERA and 0.91 WHIP in 41.2 innings this season after not pitching in 2020.
Jul 31 2021McHugh (arm) threw a bullpen session Friday, the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran is trying to work back as quickly as possible from a bit of a dead arm. McHugh has been an elite component of a strong Rays relief corps while forging a 1.51 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 12.7 K/9, and the team's official site reports there's hope he can return to action sooner than several fellow sidelined bullpen mates.
Jul 25 2021McHugh was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday with right arm fatigue, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. The move is retroactive to July 22. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh earned the win Wednesday after delivering two scoreless frames, but he hasn't pitched since while dealing with the arm fatigue. The 34-year-old has no timeline for his return but will be eligible to be activated from the injured list Aug. 1.
Jul 21 2021McHugh (3-1) allowed one hit and a walk in two scoreless innings, striking out three and earning the win in Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran righty has now held opponents scoreless in 13 consecutive appearances, striking out 38 and issuing only three free passes in that 27-inning span. After missing the 2020 season, McHugh has settled in with the Rays and become an incredibly valuable and versatile weapon capable of short starts and high-leverage relief appearances alike. His 1.51 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, three win and five holds make him an intriguing fantasy option for the remainder of the season.
Jul 7 2021McHugh pitched two perfect innings and struck out three in a 4-0 win in Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader versus Cleveland. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh was the first of five Tampa Bay pitchers to limit Cleveland to no hits in this seven-inning contest. The right-hander has mostly been a reliever this year, and to great effect -- he has a 1.77 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 53:7 K:BB across 35.2 innings. McHugh has added four holds and a 2-1 record in 20 appearances.
Jul 5 2021McHugh secured his third hold in a win over the Blue Jays on Sunday, firing three scoreless innings during which he allowed just one hit and recorded six strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh's string of dominant multi-inning efforts continued in stellar fashion Sunday, as he needed only 33 pitches to record nine outs, with six of those impressively coming via punchout. The veteran right-hander has now authored nine straight scoreless appearances to lower his ERA and WHIP to 1.87 and 0.98, respectively; moreover, he's taken his swing-and-miss stuff to a career-best level, as evidenced by a 13.4 K/9 and 38.5 percent strikeout rate.
Jun 26 2021McHugh (2-1) notched his second victory in a win over the Angels on Friday, allowing one hit and recording two strikeouts over 1.1 scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh got four outs on an efficient 19 pitches, 12 of which found the strike zone. The veteran right-hander has made scoreless multi-inning outings the norm of late, as he now boasts an eight-appearance scoreless streak during which he's forged a 23:2 K:BB and posted an 0.75 WHIP over 16 innings.
Jun 23 2021McHugh fired three perfect innings during which he recorded three strikeouts in a loss to the Red Sox on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh got his nine outs on an efficient 37 pitches, notching an impressive eight swinging strikes along the way. The veteran right-hander now owns a seven-appearance scoreless streak, a stretch during which he's posted an elite 21:2 K:BB across 14.2 innings.
Jun 19 2021McHugh (undisclosed) fired three scoreless innings in a loss to the Mariners on Friday, allowing two hits and recording three strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh spent just a day on the COVID-19 injured list before being reinstated, and he was put right to work Friday in the type of assignment he's proven quite adept in recently. The veteran right-hander now has four consecutive scoreless multi-inning efforts, coaxing his ERA and WHIP down to 2.39 and 1.18, respectively, in the process.
Jun 17 2021McHugh (undisclosed) was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list Thursday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh landed on the injured list Wednesday for an unspecified reason, and he apparently didn't test positive for COVID-19 since he'll return to the team just one day later. The right-hander should be available going forward following the brief absence. He's been one of the most productive relievers for the Rays of late, as he's posted a 0.50 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 31:6 K:BB in 18 innings across his last 11 appearances.
Jun 16 2021The Rays placed McHugh on the COVID-19-related injured list Wednesday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh will face an uncertain timeline to return from the IL; his absence could last just one or two days if he's merely experience side effects of a vaccine shot, or he could be sidelined for more than a week if he's tested positive for the virus. The Rays recalled Chris Mazza from Triple-A Durham to provide a fresh arm out of the bullpen while McHugh is deactivated. After a rough April, McHugh has been one of the Rays' top relievers over the past month and a half, submitting a 0.50 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 31:6 K:BB in 18 innings over his last 11 appearances.
Jun 13 2021McHugh, who recorded five strikeouts while allowing just one hit over two scoreless innings in a win over the Orioles on Saturday, now has three straight multi-inning appearances during which he's forged a 13:1 K:BB. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The long-time starter appears to have truly found his niche in manager Kevin Cash's eclectic relief corps, with McHugh's season ERA now sitting at an impressive 2.70 across 23.1 innings. He also boasts a 37.1 percent strikeout rate that qualifies as a career high, and his 5.1 K-BB% is one of the best in MLB. While his usage has only netted one win and three holds thus far, McHugh's ability to miss bats at an elite clip and frequent deployment should lead to more decisions and hold opportunities as the season unfolds.
Jun 3 2021McHugh, who fired two scoreless innings during which he allowed two hits and a walk while recording five strikeouts in a loss to the Yankees on Wednesday, has an 0.69 ERA and 15.9 K/9 across the 13 innings covering his last nine appearances. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A conventional starter for most of his career, McHugh has mostly shifted to an opener/long-relief role with considerable success during his first season in Tampa Bay. The veteran right-hander has coaxed his ERA from an unsightly 10.13 to 3.44 during his aforementioned stretch of dominance and has displayed considerable versatility in terms of the different roles he's been able to take on effectively.
May 30 2021McHugh gave up two hits across two-thirds of an inning Sunday against the Phillies. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh only tossed 14 pitches before being lifted and while he tossed 10 of those deliveries for strikes, he couldn't even complete an inning before making way to Josh Fleming. McHugh has made three starts in 12 appearances this season and owns a 3.86 ERA. He's expected to continue his role as a swingman going forward.
May 19 2021McHugh fired two perfect innings during which he recorded three strikeouts in a win over the Orioles on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh has carved out quite the effective niche as manager Kevin Cash's ace in the hole for multi-inning work, as the veteran right-hander now has a trio of scoreless multi-inning efforts on his ledger in May. The current month is in stark contrast to McHugh's four-appearance April, when he surrendered eight runs (six earned) on 12 hits and a walk over 5.1 innings before suffering a back injury that put him on the shelf.
May 13 2021McHugh did not allow a hit, but walked a batter and struck out two over two innings in a no-decision against the Yankees on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh was deployed as an opener Wednesday after appearing out of the bullpen in his first four outings this year. He faced the minimum six hitters after he walked Luke Voit in the second but got Aaron Hicks to ground into an inning-ending 3-5-3 double play. The 34-year-old has had a pair of shaky outings but has otherwise been pretty reliant in multi-inning scenarios. His 6.75 ERA and 1.50 WHIP isn't a pretty sight but he does own a respectable 12:2 K:BB over 9.1 innings.
May 12 2021McHugh will serve as the Rays' opener for Wednesday's game against the Yankees, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh pitched out of the bullpen in his first four outings of 2021, but he'll now serve as an opener for a second straight appearance. The right-hander worked as an opener Thursday and struck out five in two perfect innings. Left-hander Ryan Yarbrough is slated to serve as Wednesday's primary pitcher.
May 6 2021McHugh fanned five of the six batters he faced over two innings in Thursday's victory over the Angels. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The righty was sharp Thursday in his first appearance in three weeks, retiring every batter he faced. The 33-year-old threw 17 of his 23 pitches for strikes and now will look to build back up his stamina in order to earn a longer leash from conservative manager, Kevin Cash. McHugh will more than likely open for two to three innings in his next appearance.
May 4 2021McHugh (back) was activated from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 33-year-old spent the past few weeks on the shelf with a lower-back strain but will rejoin the active roster Tuesday. McHugh surrendered six runs through his first 5.1 innings of the season before the injury, and he'll attempt to get on track now that he's healthy.
May 3 2021Rays manager Kevin Cash said that McHugh (back) would travel with the team for its seven-game road trip that begins Monday, Jordan Horrobin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cash wasn't willing to reveal a target date for when McHugh might be activated from the 10-day injured list, but the skipper noted the right-hander is "definitely going in the right direction." Considering McHugh tossed a two-inning simulated game Sunday, the Rays would most likely want to give him at least Monday and Tuesday off for rest before his activation is considered.
Apr 28 2021McHugh (back) is set to throw again at the alternate training site Thursday and could be activated for the start of the Rays' next road trip Monday, the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran appears to be making solid progress throughout his recovery timeline, as he was able to throw off a mound both Friday and Sunday without setbacks. If McHugh continues on the same trajectory, it appears he'll have a chance to return to his long-relief role having spent just a handful of days over the minimum on the injured list.
Apr 23 2021McHugh (back) threw off a mound Friday and will do so again Sunday, Steve Carney of Sports Radio 620 WDAE reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh has been on the injured list since Sunday with a lower-back strain, but the fact that he's already advanced to mound work suggests it won't be a long absence. He'll be eligible to return Wednesday, though it's not yet clear if that's his target return date.
Apr 18 2021McHugh was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a strain in his lower back. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 33-year-old apparently suffered the injury Saturday while recording only one out and surrendering one run on two hits. McHugh will be eligible to return April 28, though it's unclear if he's expected to be healthy at that point. Chris Mazza was recalled from the taxi squad in a corresponding move.
Apr 11 2021McHugh (0-1) allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits while striking out one across one inning in Sunday's loss against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh came into the game in the 10th inning and recorded two outs rather quickly, but the wheels came off since then -- he gave up three straight hits that resulted in four runs before he was able to close things out. The fact that he tossed 16 of his 24 pitches for strikes is certainly an encouraging sign going forward, but that's where the positives end for the veteran right-hander, who has now allowed three earned runs in two of his three relief appearances this season.
Apr 8 2021McHugh fired three scoreless innings in a loss to the Red Sox on Wednesday, allowing four hits and no walks while recording two strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh had a rough landing against the Marlins on Saturday in his first regular-season appearance since August 2019, but that outing may have served to work out a few kinks. The right-hander's long-relief stint Thursday seems like precisely the type of assignment that's tailor made for the versatile McHugh as he continues to reacclimate to big-league bats -- a low-leverage, innings-eating scenario following a rough performance by the starting pitcher. The fact McHugh got 33 of his 45 pitches into the strike zone Wednesday was also encouraging, considering he managed to do so with only 12 of his 26 offerings in his first appearance.
Apr 4 2021McHugh surrendered three earned runs on three hits and a walk over one inning of relief in a loss to the Marlins on Saturday. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran was tagged by Adam Duvall for a solo home run for one of the three runs notched against him, and he managed to get just 12 of his 25 pitches into the strike zone. The appearance was McHugh's first taste of regular-season action since Aug. 30, 2019, and it followed an uneven spring in which he pitched to a 6.00 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and .333 BAA across six innings. McHugh is likely to work mostly in low-leverage middle-relief scenarios for the time being.
Mar 24 2021McHugh fired two scoreless innings out of the bullpen in a Grapefruit League loss to the Orioles on Tuesday, allowing a hit and recording three strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran was able to put together his first scoreless effort in three trips to the mound this spring, an encouraging development after he'd already allowed an earned run over two frames the prior time out. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports manager Kevin Cash noted that pitchers which have the ability to serve as bulk relievers will be particularly valuable as starter's innings are managed more carefully coming off the abbreviated 2020 campaign, adding that he "can't imagine scenarios" where a versatile arm like McHugh isn't on the Opening Day roster.
Mar 12 2021McHugh was saddled with the loss in Thursday's Grapefruit League defeat at the hands of Atlanta, allowing an earned run on a solo home run while giving up two other hits and a walk over two innings. He also hit a batter and recorded one strikeout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran continues to round himself back into shape after missing all of 2020, with Thursday's outing going a bit smoother than his Grapefruit League debut Sunday. McHugh notched a scoreless fifth frame upon entering the game before surrendering the home run in the sixth inning, but he was able to inch closer to the Rays' goal of stretching him out to up to four frames by the end of spring training in order to prepare him for what could be multiple roles.
Mar 8 2021McHugh, making his first game appearance since Aug. 30, 2019 in Sunday's Grapefruit League loss to the Twins, came away encouraged despite a rough one-inning outing, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. "Having a little bit of familiarity, being back on a mound where it feels comfortable to me, it meant a lot today," McHugh said. "I didn't like the results, but man, I love being out there. Physically, I felt great. From a feel standpoint, obviously, it's still getting there." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander's final line -- three earned runs allowed on three hits and a walk over one inning -- was undeniably abysmal, but McHugh was able to make a long-awaited return to the mound and got some robust work in the form of 25 pitches. The most critical takeaway for McHugh, who opted out of last season as a health precaution and while he finished his recovery from a forearm flexor strain, was that he reported feeling good physically after that workload. Manager Kevin Cash, who liked the way McHugh mixed his pitches, noted he plans to build the veteran up to three or four innings this spring "and see where it goes from there."
Mar 4 2021McHugh is slated to throw one more live batting practice before making his Grapefruit League debut, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran has been pacing himself in the first couple of weeks in spring camp after sitting out last season with the Red Sox while recovering from an elbow injury. McHugh landed in Tampa Bay in January on a one-year deal and is currently projected for a long-relief bullpen role, but given his extensive, solid body of work as a starter, he serves as quite the fallback rotation option for manager Kevin Cash.
Feb 12 2021McHugh signed a one-year, $1.8 million contract with the Rays on Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh opted out of the 2020 season while recovering from an elbow injury, but he'll land a one-year deal with Tampa Bay after throwing for multiple teams in January. The right-hander made 35 appearances (eight starts) with the Astros in 2019, posting a 4.70 ERA and 82:30 K:BB over 74.2 innings. He'll likely take on a bullpen role for his new team in 2021.
Jan 7 2021McHugh will throw a showcase session for multiple teams on Jan. 16, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Peak McHugh would be a useful addition to any team's pitching staff, as he recorded a 3.51 ERA over a five-year period from 2014 to 2018. Heading into his age-34 campaign, however, it's not clear whether or not he can still approach that level. He slumped to a 4.70 ERA in 2019 while battling injuries. His elbow issues carried forward into 2020, and he eventually opted out of the season without appearing in a game. His past success keeps him as at least an interesting lottery ticket for both MLB and fantasy teams, but he comes with more than his fair share of question marks.
Jul 19 2020McHugh (elbow) opted out of the 2020 season since his recovery hasn't progressed like he had hoped, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 33-year-old has been working his way back from an elbow injury and was already ruled out for the start of the season, but he was apparently expected to be on the injured list for a significant portion of the shortened campaign. As a result, McHugh decided his time would be better spent at home with his family amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jul 18 2020McHugh (elbow) will not be ready for Opening Day, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The report does not cite anyone in management confirming McHugh's status, but it was borne from a discussion with Boston general manager Chaim Bloom, who addressed the unsettled nature of the rotation. A week ago, manager Ron Roenicke said McHugh needs to progress faster to make the Opening Day roster, so it's natural to assume that the right-hander, who still hasn't pitched in a game-like environment, will not be part of the 30-man roster July 24.
Jul 11 2020Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke said McHugh (elbow) needs "to start progressing a lot faster" to be ready for the Opening Day roster, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh has thrown a few bullpens and was scheduled to throw another one Friday, but the right-hander hasn't thrown live batting practice, an activity Roenicke said is needed for him to be on the active roster July 24. The manager isn't even ready to commit to McHugh as a starter. "Not yet because we're not at that point where he feels comfortable with really getting after it in his bullpen sessions," Roenicke said. "Once he gets to where he feels his arm's there - and he's where he needs to be - then those discussions will happen. But he's not at that point yet." There are a few uncertain elements in Boston's starting rotation and McHugh is just one of the stories. Eduardo Rodriguez (illness) has not yet reported to camp, and there has been no announcement as to whom will be the No. 4 and 5 starters.
Jul 9 2020Manager Ron Roenicke said McHugh (elbow) is scheduled to throw at least "a couple more bullpens," Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Roenicke added that McHugh, who is working his way back from a flexor strain, is not yet ready for game action. It's still unclear whether he'll be ready for the start of the regular season at this point.
Jul 5 2020McHugh (elbow) threw a side session Saturday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Red Sox are unsure if McHugh will be ready to start the regular season due to a flexor strain. "Talking to [pitching coach] Dave Bush about him, he let it go like every few pitches," manager Ron Roenicke said. "But he didn't every pitch. He looked good. I thought the ball was coming out nice and clean, I thought the effort level was good." With both the pitcher and coaches pleased with how the session went, McHugh will be monitored Sunday to see how the elbow responds.
Jun 29 2020Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke said that McHugh (elbow) will be ready to throw bullpen sessions when the team opens "summer camp" Friday, Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh hasn't yet had the chance to throw in front of the Red Sox staff after not signing with the organization until early March before MLB suspended its season less than two weeks later. He's been slow to recover from the tenex procedure he required in his right elbow late in 2019, as he didn't even initiate a throwing program until early April. Roenicke indicated that the Red Sox will see how he looks during bullpen sessions before gauging his availability for Opening Day and determining whether he's a better fit in the rotation or in the bullpen.
Jun 24 2020Chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said Wednesday that McHugh (elbow) is "doing well" and it's a possibility he's ready for the start of the shortened season, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 33-year-old hadn't begun his throwing program when MLB suspended spring training he March, but he ended up starting the throwing program in April. Bloom avoided committing to an official timetable, but more information should be available once players are cleared to resume workouts next week. McHugh made 35 appearances (eight starts) for Houston in 2019 and posted a 4.70 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 82:30 K:BB over 74.2 innings, and it remains to be seen what role he fills for the Red Sox, especially given the extenuating circumstances of the 2020 season.
May 6 2020McHugh (elbow) said Wednesday that he's about a month into his throwing program and has been pleased with the progress he's made thus far, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After signing with Boston in early March, McHugh never began his throwing program before spring training was suspended while he continued to recover from a tenex procedure to address a right elbow injury he suffered last year. McHugh has since been able to kick off his rehab program at his home in Atlanta, and it sounds like he'll be ready to face hitters by the time teams are cleared to resume training. Assuming the right-hander requires nothing more than the typical buildup period that Boston's other starting candidates will face once workouts resume, he should have a good chance at cracking the Opening Day rotation. The Red Sox haven't completely ruled out using McHugh out of the bullpen, however.
Apr 18 2020McHugh (elbow) continues to build arm strength in advance of an eventual throwing program, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Red Sox pitching coach Dave Bush hopped on a conference call with interim manager Ron Roenicke and reporters to discuss McHugh's status. "I don't think anything has changed other than he still has to build up strength, he still has a long throwing program to go through to get ready to pitch in a big-league game," said Bush. The Red Sox weren't certain about a timeline for McHugh before they left spring training and still are unsure, although the delay caused by the coronavirus pandemic could put the right-hander in position to pitch by the time baseball eventually returns.
Mar 31 2020Red Sox general manager Chaim Bloom said Monday that McHugh (elbow) has yet to begin a throwing program, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Before MLB suspended its season, the Red Sox were already preparing for McHugh to begin the year on the injured list while he recovered from the tenex procedure to his right elbow. McHugh had been cleared to resume throwing when he signed with the team March 5, but Boston has deliberately taken things slowly with him so far this spring. The veteran will likely start to ramp up once a firmer target date for Opening Day becomes available, and he should be a candidate to slide into a rotation spot for a Red Sox pitching staff that's severely lacking in starting depth.
Mar 5 2020McHugh (elbow), who signed a one-year contract with the Red Sox on Thursday, has yet to begin a throwing program this spring and will likely open the season on the 15-day injured list, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to Sean McAdam of BostonSportsJournal.com, McHugh's deal includes a $600,000 base salary and is worth up to $3.625 million in incentives. Though he was used primarily out of the bullpen for Houston the past two seasons, McHugh is projected to slot into the rotation for Boston once healthy, as the Red Sox are lacking in established starting depth. Per Jon Heyman of MLB Network, McHugh was only recently given clearance by doctors to throw after requiring a tenex procedure for his right elbow last year, so he'll likely need multiple weeks to get his arm conditioned for starting duty. If McHugh can steer clear of any setbacks along the way, he could be ready to make his Boston debut around mid-April.
Feb 28 2020McHugh (elbow) was cleared to start a throwing program Friday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh underwent a tenex procedure to his right elbow after missing the final month of 2019 for Houston, and he finished the year with a 4.70 ERA and 1.23 WHIP over 74.2 innings. The 32-year-old remains a free agent and could garner sizable interest from teams if he can illustrate he's healthy.
Sep 17 2019McHugh (elbow) was shut down due to continued pain Tuesday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The setback presumably means the end of McHugh's season. It was largely a disappointing one for the veteran, who lost his starting role in mid-May after a rough start to the season and battled elbow issues for most of the rest of the year, finishing with a 4.70 ERA, his highest mark since 2013.
Sep 9 2019McHugh (elbow) has yet to resume throwing, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McHugh landed on the 10-ay injured list with an elbow issue at the end of August. He reportedly hasn't progressed like the Astros hoped. His return date is not clear.

Jul 5 2018McHugh (4-0) allowed one hit and struck out one over three scoreless relief innings in Wednesday's extra-inning win over the Rangers.McHugh held the fort from the seventh through the ninth inning before the Astros produced a run on a single, a hit batsman, a wild pick-off attempt and a sacrifice fly. The win was McHugh's fourth, and the scoreless outing lowered his ERA to 0.90 over 40 innings.
Jun 24 2018McHugh (3-0) retired all three batters faced by strikeout and got the win in Saturday's 4-3 extra-inning victory over Kansas City.McHugh picked up a second win this week while striking out five of the six batters he's faced. The starter-turned-reliever has transitioned into a strikeout pitcher. He has at least one punchout in his last 13 games (27 Ks over 19.1 IP) and lords over the rest of the Astros' staff at 12.6 K/9.
Jun 19 2018McHugh (2-0) struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning in Houston's come-from-behind 5-4 win over Tampa Bay.McHugh was the pitcher of record when Alex Bregman delivered a walkoff double and earned his second win of the season. The 31-year-old's transition to the bullpen has been a success thus far. McHugh owns a 1.13 ERA and 0.84 WHIP while striking out 43 over 32 innings. As a reliever, McHugh has picked up velocity -- his four-seam fastball lived at 93 mph Monday, three ticks higher than where it averaged as a starter in 2017 -- and that's resulted in a career-high 12.1 K/9.
May 25 2018McHugh allowed a hit and struck out two over two scoreless innings in Thursday's 8-2 win over the Indians.McHugh extended his scoreless run to 17.1 innings, spanning 13 appearances. He's allowed runs in just one of his 15 games, sporting a 0.46 ERA with 26 strikeouts over 19.2 innings. The 31-year-old right-hander has been a starter his entire career, however, was moved to the bullpen in 2018 due to a crowded starting rotation.
Apr 24 2018McHugh threw a perfect 1-2-3 ninth inning, striking out one in Monday's 2-0 loss to the Angels.McHugh has handled his transition to the bullpen with aplomb, posting six scoreless outings out of seven, including three straight clean appearances. The former starter can give the Astros length when needed, but the starters have averaged 6.2 innings per start and lead the league with a 2.12 ERA. McHugh has a 0.93 ERA with a 13.0 K/9 over seven appearances.
Apr 11 2018McHugh allowed a hit and a walk while striking out five in two innings of relief in Tuesday's 4-1 loss to the Twins.Starter Dallas Keuchel expended 101 pitches before leaving after four innings, necessitating some length out of the bullpen. That's the ideal spot for McHugh, the starter turned reliever. With Houston's offense, which ranks seventh in runs scored per game over the final four innings, that could lead to some stolen wins for a long man like McHugh. The 31-year-old right-hander has three multi-inning appearances and struck out 10 over 6.2 innings.
Apr 7 2018McHugh allowed two hits and hit a batter while striking out four over 2.1 scoreless innings in Friday's 4-1 loss to San Diego.McHugh, who's made 111 starts over six seasons, is adjusting to his role in the bullpen. So far there have been no issues. He's allowed one run and struck out five over 4.2 innings spanning three appearances. This was the second time pitching in multiple innings, which shouldn't be surprising for a former starter who is used to the pattern of pitching more than one inning. He'll be the first in line for spot starts or to replace an injured rotation member.
Mar 18 2018McHugh will most likely pitch out of the bullpen after manager A.J. Hinch set his starting rotation for the regular season, Glenn Sattell of MLB.com reports.Once the Astros acquired Gerrit Cole from the Pirates, moving McHugh to the pen became the likely domino to fall out of the rotation. Hinch said the rotation will be Justin Verlander, Dallas Keuchel, Lance McCullers, Cole and Charlie Morton. "We want to continue to lengthen him out," Hinch said. "He's going to pitch a little more regularly as if we're planning for the bullpen." McHugh made a couple of spring starts, but was used twice in the span of four days out of the pen this past week. He'll be the first in line for a spot start, but could also be used in a trade should Houston want an upgrade elsewhere on the roster or a more seasoned relief arm.
Feb 24 2018McHugh allowed one hit and one walk while striking out five over two innings in Saturday's spring game against Atlanta.McHugh commanded well, throwing strikes on 22 of his 30 pitches and used his entire repertoire. It was an encouraging start for the right-hander, who's hoping to use a good spring to facilitate a trade. Houston's projected starting rotation does not include McHugh, so if he wants to avoid the bullpen, his best shot would be with another team.
Feb 15 2018McHugh will make $5 million in 2018 after winning his arbitration case Thursday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. He made just 12 starts last season, but McHugh still pitched well when he was healthy, as he posted a 3.55 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP in that span. As a result, he'll make $450K more than the Astros offered him in arbitration as he looks to bounce back with a healthy 2018 campaign.
Feb 15 2018McHugh will be stretched out as a starter this spring, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.Although the Astros acquired Gerrit Cole earlier this offseason, the club would still like to give McHugh an opportunity to carve out a spot in the rotation. He's likely battling Charlie Morton for that fifth spot, with the odd man out taking on a role in the bullpen to start off the 2018 campaign. Last season, McHugh started 12 games after dealing with a right elbow impingement early on in the year, and posted a 3.55 ERA and 1.29 WHIP with a 62:20 K:BB over 63.1 innings.
Feb 13 2018The Twins are considering acquiring McHugh, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic as are the Orioles, who contacted the Astros about the right-hander, according to Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports. When the Astros added Gerrit Cole to their roster earlier during the offseason, it presaged a likely move to the bullpen for McHugh, if he stayed in Houston. The 30-year-old went 5-2 with a 3.55 ERA over 12 starts in 2017 after missing the first half of the season with shoulder tendinitis. The Twins are in the market for another starter after learning they will be without Ervin Santana (finger) for 10-to-12 weeks, while the Orioles are looking to add to a rotation that currently has just two confirmed starters (Dylan Bundy and Kevin Gausman).
Jan 14 2018McHugh may start the season in the bullpen or could be a trade candidate following the acquisition of Gerrit Cole, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.McHugh wasn't assured of a spot in the rotation before the Astros acquired Cole from the Pirates over the weekend. An elbow injury cost him the first half of last season, then he later missed time with a fingernail avulsion. Health will be an unknown until he gets to spring training. Given good health among the starters, Cole figures to slot in as a No. 3 or 4 starter behind Justin Verlander and Dallas Keuchel, while Lance McCullers and Charlie Morton fill out the rotation. Best case scenario for McHugh is that he proves himself healthy and is moved at some point late in spring training.
Oct 5 2017McHugh was left off the active roster for Houston's series against the Red Sox, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh will not be available for the ALDS as manager A.J. Hinch decided to leave the right-hander off the roster in favor of Charlie Morton and Brad Peacock, who are seemingly in line for Games 3 and 4 of the series at the moment. Although McHugh won't make an appearance against Boston, with rosters changing following every round, he could rejoin the active roster should the Astros advance to the ALCS.
Oct 1 2017McHugh struck out eight and held the Red Sox to three runs on five hits over six innings en route to his fifth win of the season Sunday in Boston.Even with the quality start, McHugh might be on the outside looking in at a playoff rotation spot as Brad Peacock and Charlie Morton may claim the final two spots behind Justin Verlander and Dallas Keuchel. Nevertheless, McHugh appears to be healthy entering the postseason after being limited to 12 starts (63.1 innings) during the regular season.
Sep 30 2017McHugh will start the final game of the regular season Sunday in Boston, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh, who has a 3.45 ERA over 11 starts, will be vying for a spot in the postseason rotation. The right-hander missed some time due to a fingernail avulsion, but has come back to pitch relatively well in two starts. The problem is that Brad Peacock and Charlie Morton haven't slowed down, and they look like the best options to be the third and fourth starters after Justin Verlander and Dallas Keuchel in the postseason.
Sep 25 2017McHugh (4-2) struck out six batters and allowed two runs on seven hits and three walks through five innings to earn the win Monday night over the Rangers.McHugh hasn't completed the sixth innings since August 25th in Los Angeles. At this point, the Astros seem to be relying on McHugh to give his all over short bursts and are willing to count on their bullpen to finish the rest of the game. He has been effective despite his short starts, as McHugh has allowed just six earned runs over his last four outings.
Sep 22 2017McHugh's next scheduled start has been moved to Monday against the Rangers, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh had been scheduled to start Sunday's game, but the Astros will push him back a day and send Lance McCullers to the hill Sunday instead. McHugh picked up a win when he last took the mound Tuesday, as he allowed just one run and struck out five batters over five innings against the White Sox.
Sep 19 2017McHugh (3-2) picked up the win after allowing just one run on five hits and a walk while striking out five over five innings in Tuesday's win over the White Sox.McHugh was sharp in his first start back after suffering a detached fingernail during his Sept. 8 appearance. He struck out four batters over the first two frames and allowed just one extra-base hit in his five innings of work before departing with a 2-1 lead after throwing 87 pitches (56 for strikes). The effective outing lowered his ERA to 3.44, a figure he'll look to improve upon in his upcoming matchup with the Angels on Sunday.
Sep 17 2017McHugh (fingernail) is scheduled to start Tuesday against the White Sox, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh's fingernail detached during his last start Sept. 8, but it's gotten to a point where he'll be able to pitch Tuesday. Prior to the start where he suffered the injury, McHugh had been pitching very well. Over the previous three outings he posted a 0.54 ERA and 1.08 WHIP.
Sep 16 2017McHugh (fingernail) will "probably" pitch next Tuesday when Houston opens a series against the White Sox, according to manager A.J. Hinch, Hunter Atkins of the Houston Chronicle reports.Hinch was discussing immediate plans for McHugh and fellow injured starter Lance McCullers (arm), suggesting both could be headed to the bullpen. Hinch said both will pitch Tuesday, but added he hasn't decided who will start. It's uncertain if the manager is deciding between those two for the start, or if there will be another pitcher starting, or if it will be a bullpen start. We should learn more this weekend, when McHugh is expected to throw an inning of relief and McCullers throws a bullpen session Saturday.
Sep 14 2017McHugh (fingernail) threw a light bullpen session Wednesday, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. It's surprising to see McHugh throw off a mound, no matter how lightly, as the Astros discussed having him play catch a few more days before hitting a mound. At any rate, it's a positive sign. The next available turn in the rotation comes due next week against the White Sox, however, he could pitch an inning of relief this weekend against Seattle.
Sep 13 2017McHugh (fingernail) will play catch for a couple of days before the Astros test him throwing off a mound, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh played catch Tuesday, his first bit of baseball activity since he exited last Friday's start prematurely because of a right middle fingernail avulsion. The right-hander said the session went well. The Astros are hopeful he can make a start next week against the White Sox.
Sep 12 2017McHugh (fingernail) was able to play catch Tuesday, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh reported that everything went well in his throwing session, which marked his first time playing catch since leaving Friday's game with a detached fingernail. The plan remains for the 30-year-old to rejoin the rotation next week against the White Sox.
Sep 11 2017McHugh (fingernail) plans to try throwing before Tuesday's series opener against the Angels, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh, who is being replaced by Brad Peacock during this current iteration of the rotation, will test out the detached fingernail on his right middle finger. If all goes well, McHugh is expected to rejoin the rotation next week at home against the White Sox.
Sep 10 2017McHugh (finger) will miss his scheduled Thursday start against the Angels, Julia Morales of AT&T SportsNet Southwest reports.McHugh will be forced to miss his upcoming start after suffering a detached fingernail during his shortened Friday start against the A's. Brad Peacock will take the mound in his place Thursday, but the plan is for McHugh to rejoin the rotation against the White Sox on Sept. 20, assuming his finger is fully healed.
Sep 9 2017McHugh's status for Thursday's projected start is "up in the air" according to manager AJ Hinch, due to a detached fingernail that he suffered during Friday's outing, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh was forced to exit Friday's game after just three innings, and will throw Tuesday to determine whether he's able to make Thursday's start against the Angels. The right-hander should be considered day-to-day moving forward, and shouldn't miss more than one start if he's unable to pitch Thursday.
Sep 9 2017According to manager AJ Hinch, McHugh's status for Thursday's projected start is "up in the air" due to a detached fingernail that he suffered during Friday's outing, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh was forced to exit Friday's game after just three innings and will throw Tuesday to determine whether he's able to make Thursday's start against the Angels. The right-hander should be considered day-to-day moving forward and shouldn't miss more than one start if he's unable to pitch Thursday.
Sep 8 2017McHugh was forced to leave Friday's game against Oakland after just three innings and 50 pitches with a right middle fingernail avulsion, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. In English, that's a detached fingernail for McHugh. The fingernail is hugely important for proper grip and spin, so McHugh may have to skip a start to let it heal. Consider him day-to-day going forward. He had allowed three runs on four hits and a walk before the injury.
Aug 31 2017McHugh allowed a single unearned run on four hits and two walks while striking out three batters through 4.2 innings during Thursday's win over Texas. He didn't factor into the decision. It was a little surprising that McHugh wasn't left in the game to face Adrian Beltre with runners on second and third in the top of the fifth inning. However, he was already at 91 pitches and had just allowed a double to Nomar Mazara. It was the first time he failed to pitch into the sixth frame since his return outing from the disabled list July 22, and the 30-year-old righty now sports a 3.25 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 8.5 K/9 for the campaign. Even with Thursday's brief outing in mind, McHugh remains a strong option in the majority of fantasy settings. He projects to face the Mariners at Safeco Field in his next start.
Aug 25 2017McHugh (2-2) allowed one run on three hits and two walks with eight strikeouts through six innings to earn the win Friday over the Angels.McHugh has a blistering 15:4 K:BB with a 1.53 ERA over 17.2 innings over his past three start. He has allowed more than two runs just twice in his seven starts this season. If McHugh can stay in this groove, he'll be a huge asset for the Astros rotation down the stretch.
Aug 20 2017McHugh pitched six scoreless innings with three strikeouts during Saturday's win over Oakland. He allowed six hits and a walk.McHugh has now allowed two runs or fewer in four of his six starts since returning from the disabled list. Additionally, outside of a forgettable showing against the White Sox (seven runs allowed through 5.1 innings), he's been solid and is closing in on matchup-proof fantasy status. McHugh takes a 4.01 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 8.3 K/9 into his next start at Angel Stadium against Los Angeles.
Aug 15 2017McHugh (0-2) allowed two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out six over 5.2 innings in Monday's 2-0 loss to the Diamondbacks.McHugh bounced back from a drubbing at the hands of the White Sox five days ago, but needed to be better in a duel with Arizona's Zack Grienke, a former Cy Young Award winner who kept the Astros off the board. The 106 pitches Monday was a season-high for McHugh, who has made five starts while working himself back from a season-opening elbow injury. The right-hander will make his sixth start of the season Saturday at home against Oakland.
Aug 9 2017McHugh (0-1) was tagged for seven runs on nine hits and three walks over 5.1 innings in Wednesday's loss to the White Sox. He struck out five.He was cruising along with four shutout innings, but the wheels totally came off in the fifth -- Tim Anderson hit a two-run homer off him, then McHugh let the White Sox rally for a couple more runs. Yet he was still allowed to come out and start the sixth, only to get pulled with one out and two on after Anderson doubled another run home; the bullpen made sure his inherited runners came around. This was by far McHugh's worst outing since returning from a season-opening elbow injury that cost him almost four months, and it serves as a reminder of how unsteady he was as a fantasy asset last season. Utilize the 30-year-old righty with caution, particularly with his next start lined up to take place in hitter-friendly Arizona on Monday.
Aug 3 2017McHugh allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts over six innings in Thursday's no-decision against the Rays.A Derek Fisher throwing error set up Tampa Bay's first run in the second inning while a Steven Souza homer in the sixth accounted for the only earned run on McHugh's ledger. McHugh hasn't pitched more than six innings in any of his three starts since returning from an elbow injury and is yet to factor into a decision, but his 17:5 K:BB over that stretch is encouraging. His first win could well be in the cards Wednesday when the right-hander travels to Chicago to face the cellar-dwelling White Sox.
Jul 29 2017McHugh (0-0) allowed one run on four hits and one walk while striking out seven over six innings, but received no decision Saturday against the Tigers.McHugh held the Tigers scoreless until the fifth inning, and left the game with a 3-1 lead before the bullpen cost him a shot at his first win of the season. This outing was much better than his season debut last week, and fantasy teams in need of pitching should be encouraged by his performance. He'll make his next start Thursday against the Rays.
Jul 24 2017McHugh implemented a slider to his repertoire when he resumed throwing after being shut down with an elbow injury, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh incorporated the slider to use against right-handed hitters, a complement to the cutter he will throw against lefties. The right-hander threw 20 sliders during his season debut Saturday against Baltimore and induced five swing-and-misses with it. "It was pretty effective at times (Saturday), so hopefully we can continue to refine it moving forward and it can be a weapon for us," he said.
Jul 22 2017McHugh (0-0) allowed four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four over 4.2 innings in a no-decision Saturday against the Orioles. In his season debut after missing over three months of the year with an elbow injury, McHugh was far from sharp, but the Houston offense provided plenty of support, keeping him from picking up a loss. He'll likely need to string together a few good outings before he begins to regain the confidence of fantasy managers. He'll make his next start Friday against the Tigers.
Jul 22 2017McHugh (elbow) was reinstated from the 60-day disabled list and will start Saturday's game against the Orioles. As anticipated, the right-hander will make his 2017 debut Saturday night. McHugh has been a serviceable rotation member the past few years, and he'll look to give the Astros a boost as they take on right-hander Chris Tillman and the Orioles.
Jul 18 2017McHugh (elbow) is expected to rejoin Houston's rotation this weekend against the Orioles, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. The final two pieces to drop before McHugh joins the rotation is the outcome of a bullpen session scheduled Tuesday and which day he'll start. Friday's series opener would represent normal rest and it's also the day a struggling Joe Musgrove is line to start, so that seems to be the most logical deployment for McHugh. The right-hander got his pitch count up to 69 in his final rehabilitation start, then threw another 20 pitches in a bullpen following that. He should be ready to go at least five innings.
Jul 18 2017McHugh (elbow) will start Saturday's game in Baltimore. This will be his season debut. He has a 3.60 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB in 15 innings over three rehab starts with Double-A Corpus Christi. He logged six innings but only threw 69 pitches (48 strikes) in his final rehab start, so it would be surprising if he were able to throw 100 pitches in his first start off the DL. McHugh replaces Joe Musgrove in the rotation.
Jul 16 2017McHugh (elbow) pitched six innings at Double A on Sunday in what is expected to be his final rehab appearance, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. An elbow issue has kept McHugh on the shelf since the start of the season, but he's made significant progress in recent weeks and is expected to rejoin the Astros in Baltimore over the coming weekend. Given McHugh's impending return, the Astros will need to open up a rotation sport, and Joe Mosgrove -- 6.04 ERA in 14 starts -- would appear to be the most likely candidate for a reassignment or move to the bullpen.
Jul 14 2017McHugh (elbow) will make his final rehab start Sunday with Double-A Corpus Christi, the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh has battled arm trouble since early in spring training, but he's down to one final hurdle on his road back to the big-league roster. He will attempt to build up to six innings and roughly 90 pitches Sunday with an eye toward returning next weekend in Baltimore. Joe Musgrove seems the most likely candidate to lose his rotation spot upon McHugh's activation.
Jul 11 2017McHugh (elbow) logged 4.1 innings and ran his pitch count up to 74 in his third rehabilitation start at Double-A Corpus Christi on Monday, Len Hayward of the Corpus Christi Caller-Times reports. The right-hander allowed three unearned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four.McHugh reported feeling soreness after the outing, which he viewed as a good thing because what he felt wasn't pain. Another good sign was his curveball being as effective as it has been during his three-start stint with the Hooks. He'll huddle up with coaches and trainers to determine the next step, but at least one more rehab start is expected.
Jul 7 2017McHugh (elbow) will make a third rehabilitation start Monday at Double-A Corpus Christi, Hunter Atkins of the Houston Chronicle reports. The Astros will have McHugh throw at least two more rehab starts before he's activated.
Jul 5 2017McHugh completed 3.2 innings in his second rehabilitation start for Double-A Corpus Christi, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh, who was scheduled to throw between 45 and 50 pitches, dialed up his pitch count to 53 in his second rehab start. He was perfect through three innings before allowing two runs in the fourth inning and struck out five without issuing a walk. He'll need at least two more rehab starts, maybe more, before he's ready to rejoin the major league team.
Jul 1 2017McHugh (elbow) will make his second rehab appearance Wednesday for Double-A Corpus Christi, MLB.com's Christian Boutwell reports.McHugh felt "no pain" after his initial outing, which is exactly what the Astros wanted to hear after his rough return to the mound. The right-hander gave up four earned runs off seven hits and one walk without recording a strikeout, but it isn't shocking that McHugh would be a little rusty after all his time off. He said that everything was perfectly normal and that he will likely throw over 50 pitches Wednesday after tossing 42 during Friday's start.
Jun 30 2017McHugh (elbow) lasted just one inning and allowed four runs on seven hits, two walks and a hit-by-pitch in his first rehab appearance Friday with Double-A Corpus Christi, the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh threw 42 pitches and was replaced before he could get an out in the second inning. More important than his effectiveness is how he feels after throwing so many pitches, but it isn't a good sign that he was getting lit up by Double-A hitters. McHugh hasn't pitched at all this season and will likely take the full 20 days allowed on this rehab assignment, and as such, his return likely won't come until a week or so after the All-Star break.
Jun 27 2017McHugh (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Corpus Christi on Friday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.McHugh will get his first taste of live action since the end of the 2016 season, as he's been sidelined for the entirety of the 2017 campaign with a posterior impingement in his right elbow. The righty will need three-to-four rehab outings before rejoining the Astros' rotation, which puts him on track to be activated from the DL in mid-July following the All-Star break.
Jun 26 2017McHugh (elbow) should begin a rehabilitation assignment within the next week, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh, who hasn't pitched in the majors this season because of an impingement in his pitching elbow, came out of a simulated game Saturday without incident. The right-hander will begin the assignment with a two-inning start and build up his arm over several outings. It will be spring training all over again.
Jun 25 2017McHugh (elbow) completed a simulated game with all of his pitches Saturday, and will head to the minors for a rehab start next week, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.McHugh recently threw live batting practice, and appears to be making strides with his injury that has caused him to miss all of the 2017 season thus far. With a rehab assignment on the horizon, McHugh could be back with the club before the All-Star break barring any setbacks.
Jun 21 2017McHugh (elbow) threw a successful session of live batting practice Wednesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. It's a major step in the right direction for McHugh, who has been out since experiencing discomfort in spring training. The next step appears to be a simulated game earlier this week, which should give trainers a better estimate as to when the righty will be able to begin a full-fledged rehab assignment. McHugh is looking to improve after posting a somewhat disappointing 4.34 ERA and 1.41 WHIP last season.
Jun 19 2017McHugh (elbow) will head to Florida this week to face live hitters, Mark Eisenhauer of the Houston Chronicle reports. This will essentially be spring training for McHugh, who experienced elbow discomfort early in training camp and has yet to throw a ball for the Astros this season. If his initial results in Florida are positive, the right-handed McHugh will graduate to a more extensive rehabilitation assignment.
Jun 16 2017McHugh (elbow) could face hitters in live batting practice within the next week, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. The right-hander is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Friday, and it seems like live BP could be the next step in his rehab process if all goes well in the bullpen. This would be a big step in McHugh's recovery, as it would potentially help him return before the All-Star break if all goes as planned.
Jun 8 2017McHugh was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Thursday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.Despite throwing off a mound at the end of May, McHugh still remains without a timetable for return. This made him an easy choice to be moved from the 40-man roster to allow top prospect Francis Martes to head to Houston for his big-league debut. It's unlikely that McHugh will be able to make an impact with the Astros until the second half of the season, although more information on his recovery progress should come forth once he ramps up his throwing program.
May 25 2017McHugh (elbow) threw off a mound Thursday for the first time in his rehab, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. While this marks a significant step in McHugh's recovery process, he still remains without a timetable for return. A clearer return date should start to materialize once the next steps in his rehab process are determined.
May 19 2017McHugh (elbow) remains without a timetable for a return to throwing off a mound, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh's original timetable had him returning to action after about six weeks off, but that goal is a distant memory at this point. It's unclear what the next steps are while his rehab process is stagnating, but the Astros don't seem to expect him back with the team until the second half of the season. More information should be revealed once he's able to get back on track.
May 6 2017McHugh (elbow impingement) played catch Friday out to 45 feet, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. This was the first time McHugh had played catch since being diagnosed with an elbow injury in early April.Manager A.J. Hinch described McHugh's throwing session as part of "the infancy stage of a very long process." The plan will have McHugh throw every other day for the next week with future plans determined by how the pitcher's arm and body respond to the activity. Given the right-hander will need what amounts to a spring training-like ramp up when McHugh eventually pitches off a mound, his return to the Astros' rotation could push out to June.
May 4 2017McHugh (elbow impingement) will join his teammates on the trip to Anaheim for a weekend set against the Angels, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.Manager A.J. Hinch said McHugh may start playing catch "pretty soon." While that sounds positive, it's been only four weeks since McHugh was diagnosed with a posterior impingement in the right elbow. At the time of his diagnosis, the plan was to shut him down for six weeks.
May 2 2017McHugh (elbow) said Tuesday that he might start playing catch this weekend, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. The diagnosis of a posterior impingement in McHugh's elbow came with the recommendation of six weeks without any throwing activity. McHugh is nearing the end of that window, but he's still a ways away from game action, as he will need to gradually increase his throwing distance on flat ground before progressing to mound work and ultimately a rehab assignment.
Apr 8 2017McHugh was diagnosed with a posterior impingement in his right elbow Saturday and will be shut down for six weeks.McHugh will be re-evaluated at the end of the six week period, but a clean MRI Friday has alleviated any concerns of a UCL problem. Regardless, this is devastating news considering the right-hander was actually rehabbing from a shoulder injury when he first felt the discomfort. The Astros can only hope that the solution is non-surgical and that McHugh will be able to return sometime in early June, but they'll have to carry on with Mike Fiers and Joe Musgrove in the rotation for now.
Apr 8 2017McHugh (elbow) visited with team doctors Friday and the Astros are expected to provide an update Saturday, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. The next step for McHugh depends on what the doctors saw in Friday's evaluation. It certainly looks like the right-hander will miss all of April. In the meantime, the Astros will roll with Joe Musgrove and Mike Fiers in the starting rotation. If McHugh's prognosis indicates he'll be out long term, the team is likely to consider trading for a proven major-league starter. The Astros were the most prominent team to pop up in trade rumors during the offseason for the White Sox's Jose Quintana.
Apr 7 2017McHugh exited his rehab start Thursday because of tightness in his elbow and bicep, the Houston Chronicle's Jake Kaplan reports. It seemed ominous when McHugh went out for the start of the second inning in his rehab start for Triple-A Fresno but then called for the trainer and exited. He is back in Houston on Friday visiting with team doctors. At this point an extended absence seems likely, so those in shallower formats without DL spots may want to cut bait. Mike Fiers will continue to occupy the fifth spot in the rotation in the meantime.
Apr 6 2017McHugh (arm) called for the trainer and exited Thursday's rehab start after just one inning, The Fresno Bee's Bryant-Jon Anteola reports. He gave up three runs on three hits and a walk while throwing 27 pitches in the first inning, but after going out to the mound to begin the second, he exited with the trainer before throwing a pitch. McHugh will need at least one more rehab start after failing to build up his pitch count Thursday, and if he has indeed aggravated the injury he may be out of the big-league rotation indefinitely.
Apr 6 2017McHugh (arm) will need to make at least one more rehab start before joining the Astros after lasting just one inning in Thursday's outing for Triple-A Fresno, the Houston Chronicle's Jake Kaplan reports. He allowed three runs on three hits and a walk and threw just 27 pitches, so he will need at least another start to build up his pitch count to the point that he would be able to slot into the Astros' rotation. This means Mike Fiers is likely safe for at least one more turn in the big-league rotation. If McHugh only needs one more rehab start, he would rejoin the Astros on April 18 against the Angels.
Apr 3 2017McHugh (arm) will make a rehab start Thursday with Triple-A Fresno, the Houston Chronicle's Jake Kaplan reports.McHugh is aiming for this to be his lone start in the minors before returning to the big league rotation. The 29-year-old is currently on the 10-day disabled list and threw a 65-pitch simulated game Sunday. He did not appear in a spring training game until March 27, when he allowed three runs in 1.2 innings. The right-hander won 19 games in 2015, only to go 13-10 with a 4.34 ERA last season.
Apr 2 2017McHugh (arm) said Sunday that he felt good following his 65-pitch simulated game that he threw a day earlier, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh has been recovering from a dead arm that plagued him for nearly all of spring training. The fact that he was able to get through a lengthy simulated game without any issues is a good sign that he could be nearing a return after his time on the 10-day disabled list expires. Assuming that McHugh's arm is able to return to full strength, the 29-year-old will have a good shot at regaining a spot in Houston's starting rotation.
Mar 30 2017McHugh (arm) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Thursday. The right-hander dealt with a dead arm all spring, and unfortunately it seems that his efforts to prepare himself for the season weren't good enough to avoid a DL stint. McHugh is scheduled for a simulated game Saturday, so it doesn't seem like his return to MLB action is too far away, but things should become clearer following Saturday's outing. In the meantime, Mike Fiers appears to be in line to pick up a start in his stead.
Mar 29 2017McHugh (arm) is scheduled to throw a simulated game Saturday in Florida, MLB.com's Brian McTaggart reports. The Astros have already indicated that McHugh will open the season on the 10-day DL after he was slowed by a case of dead arm in spring training, and the right-hander is still in the process of building up his pitch count. After being tagged for three runs and five hits over 1.2 innings Monday against the Cardinals, McHugh looks like he still has some issues to resolve, so he'll toss approximately 75 pitches Saturday before the Astros reassess his condition. If the simulated game goes well, McHugh is expected to head to a minor-league affiliate for one start next week before being activated. Mike Fiers looks most at risk of losing his rotation spot once McHugh is deemed ready to go.
Mar 27 2017McHugh (arm) allowed three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out two over 1.2 innings in Monday's game against the Cardinals, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh was making his first start in a Grapefruit League game after being delayed by the injury and needed 47 pitches to get his five outs. He had been scheduled to throw three of four innings. Three consecutive singles led to a first-inning run, then a walk and two extra-base hits chased him in the second. The results probably get magnified coming so close to the regular season, but McHugh is still getting his velocity up and working on secondary pitches. The Astros planned to placing him on the 10-day disabled list to start the season and have him ready for the second turn of the rotation. That notion may left town Monday. McHugh might need to skip a couple of turns through the rotation to get ready.
Mar 25 2017McHugh is expected to make his Grapefruit League debut Monday and throw three or four innings, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.McHugh, slowed by a dead arm this spring, is still likely to begin the season with a short DL stint as he builds up his regular velocity, but Monday should provide a great sign of his progression. A firmer timetable may become clear depending on how this next week progresses, but it appears Joe Musgrove and Mike Fiers will both see Opening Week starts if McHugh misses extended time.
Mar 25 2017McHugh may not be able to build up his arm in time to take the ball during the first rotation of the regular season, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. "It's looking more and more likely that (McHugh) may be late for the season," said manager A.J. Hinch.Hinch is not making a definitive declaration, but having McHugh start the season on the 10-day disabled list will allow the right-hander to build up his inning and pitch count. He most recently pitched three innings Wednesday and is scheduled to throw early next week but would be limited to four innings and 60-to-65 pitches. That's a tight schedule to be ready for one of the first five games of the regular season. If McHugh opens on the DL, Joe Musgrove and Mike Fiers will make up the back end of the rotation.
Mar 23 2017McHugh allowed on run on two hits while striking out five over three innings in a minor league game, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh's on a tight schedule to be ready for the first rotation of the season. The right-hander's building his pitch count following a delay due to a dead arm period. He threw 41 pitches and will have another two opportunities to increase that. The prudent thing would have him begin the season on the 10-day disabled list and back-date the DL-assignment. He would miss the first turn, one start, and be ready to go for the rotation's second turn.
Mar 21 2017McHugh is behind other Astros starters and may not get enough work in before the start of the regular season, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. "We're cutting it really close," manager A.J. Hinch said. "I think we'll know more once he gets a couple more outings under his belt. But he's just behind. He doesn't have any problems anymore. It's a readiness question."McHugh was delayed early in camp with what was described as a dead arm, but it was more due to his rotator cuff. At any rate, he's thrown one minor league game and is scheduled to pitch another one Wednesday, but can't afford any setbacks. The Astros may just have him begin the season on the disabled list. Until McHugh's ready to pitch, Joe Musgrove and Mike Fiers can hold down the back end of the rotation.
Mar 19 2017McHugh will pitch in a minor league game Wednesday, Glenn Sattell of MLB.com reports.McHugh pitched two innings Friday in what Sattell refers to as a simulated game while Jodie Wagner of the Houston Chronicle called it a minor league game. Whatever the terminology, McHugh came out of Friday's outing well and is on a schedule toward the regular season.
Mar 18 2017McHugh (arm) made his spring debut Friday, throwing two innings in a minor league game, Jodie Wagner of the Houston Chronicle reports. At most, McHugh can get in three starts before the regular season, which seems like the bare minimum needed to build up his pitch count. If he does break camp with Houston, manager A.J. Hinch will likely use him as the fifth pitcher in the rotation. But let's see how the arm responds to Friday's outing before penciling him into the first rotation of the regular season.
Mar 14 2017McHugh (arm) had his batting-practice session moved to Tuesday, Hunter Atkins of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh had been scheduled to throw Monday, but will throw a simulated game instead. If his arm responds well to Tuesday's session, McHugh could pitch in a game Friday, whether that be a major-league or minor-league game. The imprecise phrase "dead arm" was used to describe the injury that forced a delay in McHugh's throwing schedule, but the root cause involves the rotator cuff in his shoulder -- in particular, it wasn't getting enough blood flow to strengthen ligaments. As such, he's been performing exercises designed to encourage blood flow to the area.
Mar 14 2017McHugh (arm) threw a 28-pitch batting-practice session Tuesday, Hunter Atkins of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh, who was facing live hitters for the first time, said he used all four of his pitches, but didn't command well. That's to be expected at this stage. The next step for McHugh is to throw three innings in a minor league game this weekend, when he'll get to experience the up-and-downs of throwing an inning then resting. There's little time left in spring training, so any setbacks could jeopardize his availability for the start of the regular season.
Mar 13 2017McHugh (arm) is aiming to make his Grapefruit League debut Friday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. The Astros will have McHugh throw a live batting practice session Tuesday as a final step in his recovery from dead arm, and if all goes well, the right-hander should be able to get a few outings in before the spring draws to a close. McHugh looks on track to open the season as the Astros' No. 3 starter.
Mar 11 2017McHugh (arm) is scheduled to face hitters in live batting practice Monday, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. It's another great step towards a full recovery for McHugh, who has been delayed throughout camp by a "dead arm." The right-hander says the session will help him determine whether he's able to begin pitching in Grapefruit League games and he remains determined to be ready for his first start in the rotation. "I think we're on schedule, maybe a little bit ahead," he said. There's still plenty of camp left for McHugh to prepare for the season, where he's expected to be a central part of the Astros' rotation.
Mar 9 2017Manager A.J. Hinch remains confident McHugh (arm) will be ready for the Opening Day roster, and the club plans on ramping up his activity sometime in the next week, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.McHugh reported a case of dead arm around the time camp started, but he threw his first bullpen workout Monday and doesn't appear to be in jeopardy of missing time. Still, fantasy players should stay on top of his status before considering adding him to pitching staffs in deep mixed leagues.
Mar 6 2017McHugh (arm) threw 25-30 pitches off a mound at about 70 percent Monday, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. The 29-year-old reportedly felt good after throwing his first bullpen session of spring training, and is hoping he can soon progress to live batting practice and then a Grapefruit League game. Despite being delayed considerably due to a dead arm at the beginning of camp, the Astros and McHugh feel optimistic that he'll be in their rotation come Opening Day.
Mar 5 2017McHugh is scheduled to throw his first bullpen session of the spring Monday, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. The 29-year-old right-hander has been delayed this spring after he reported to camp in mid-February with a dead arm. After Monday's session, McHugh said he'll be better able to gauge how many more bullpens he'll need before he throws a live batting-practice session. Under that schedule, it's sounding like McHugh's preparation will bump up with the first week of the regular season, but he and the Astros are optimistic he'll be ready for the rotation's first turn in April.
Mar 4 2017McHugh could throw his first bullpen session "in the next couple days," according to Houston manager A.J. Hinch, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. If he can start throwing in game by the end of next week, McHugh will have time to build up arm strength and pitch counts to get ready for the first turn of the rotation in the regular season.
Feb 27 2017McHugh is behind the rest of the Astros starting pitchers in his throwing arm after coming into spring training with a "general dead arm," Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.Although the dead arm set him behind in his throwing program, the right-hander feels confident that he'll be able to get in the four starts he needs to be ready for the beginning of the season. He's been throwing for about a week now, and will likely toss his first bullpen session early next week. When he's able to return, he'll slide into the middle of Houston's rotation, where he posted a 4.34 ERA while registering 8.6 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 in 184.2 innings last season.
Feb 24 2017McHugh will throw his first live batting practice session of the spring next week, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh hasn't had any offseason health issues, so this is probably just caution in his preparation. Perhaps they're changing things with him because he's had first-half struggles over the last two seasons. (He failed to recover as well in 2016 as he did in 2015.) The right-hander is often forgotten in the middle to late rounds of fantasy drafts, but his career 8.13 K/9 and 2.45 BB/9 show that he has the skills to deliver an elite season, like the one with which he treated opportunistic owners in 2014 (2.73 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 9.14 K/9, 2.39 BB/9).
Feb 14 2017McHugh won his arbitration hearing on Tuesday and will receive $3.85 million for the 2017 season, FanRag Sports' Jon Heyman reports. The Astros had proposed a $3.35 million salary for the upcoming season, but the arbiter rewarded McHugh for handling 150-plus innings in three straight seasons while posting an ERA under 3.90 in two of those three campaigns.
Feb 1 2017McHugh's arbitration hearing is scheduled for Feb. 10.McHugh's numbers took a dip in 2016 relative to the season before, which could favor the team's offer ($3.35 million) over the pitcher's ($3.85 million) at the hearing. Working for McHugh is that he tied for the team lead in quality starts (16), won six straight decisions to end the season, and increased his strikeout rate. The 29-year-old right hander is expected to open the season in Houston's rotation.
Sep 26 2016McHugh allowed two runs on six hits and three walks with six strikeouts over seven innings in a no-decision Monday against the Mariners.McHugh has allowed two runs or fewer in five of his past six starts and hasn't dropped a decision since August 13 against Toronto. With Lance McCullers and Dallas Keuchel banged up, McHugh is effectively Houston's ace despite his 4.53 season ERA. McHugh posted a 3.89 ERA with 171 strikeouts in 203.2 innings in 2015 and has looked much more like that pitcher of late.
Sep 21 2016McHugh (12-10) allowed two runs on six hits, struck out five and walked two over 5.2 innings in a victory over the Athletics on Wednesday. He left with a runner at second and the tying run coming to the plate, but James Hoyt retired the next batter. McHugh has allowed two or fewer runs in three straight starts, all of which were victories. He has a 4.61 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 166 strikeouts in 170 innings this season. McHugh will make his next start Monday in a very important game against Seattle
Sep 17 2016McHugh improved to 11-10 after tossing seven scoreless innings in Friday's 6-0 win over the Mariners. He allowed two hits and two walks while striking out six.McHugh shut down Seattle over seven strong innings, lowering his ERA to 4.66 in the process. It's been an uneven season for the 29-year-old, who's struggled to maintain any sort of consistency a year after winning 19 games. He's been pitching better recently, however, going 3-0 with a 2.42 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP over his past four starts. He'll look to stay hot in Wednesday's road start against a weak A's offense.
Sep 10 2016McHugh (10-10) gave up an earned run on two hits and three walks over five innings in Saturday's 2-1 victory over the Cubs. He struck out six.The righty had some struggles with his control, an integral factor in his exit after just five frames. McHugh fired a total of 92 pitches during his time on the mound and often got behind early in the count, notching first-pitch strikes on just nine of 19 hitters. He did manage 12 swinging strikes overall, however, and has now rattled off wins in his last three decisions. He'll look to keep the positive momentum going when he takes on the Mariners next Friday.
Sep 4 2016McHugh (9-10) allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three over 4.1 innings, but received no decision Sunday against the Rangers.McHugh has only recorded one quality start over his last five outings, and his ERA has risen from 4.69 to 4.96 on the season. After posting a pair of solid campaigns with the Astros in 2014 and 2015, he's had major regression in his numbers this year.
Aug 30 2016McHugh (9-10) threw six shutout innings and allowed just four hits and a walk with five strikeouts in the win Tuesday against Oakland.McHugh logged his first quality start since August 8 and his first start with fewer than three runs allowed since July 23. He was downright nasty Tuesday night, as he induced 20 swinging strikes on 102 pitches and allowed just one baserunner to even get past second base. McHugh has had a major struggle with the home run ball this year, with four multi-homer starts and 23 total homers allowed in 27 starts. Until he figures that out, starts like this will be few and far between.
Aug 25 2016McHugh (8-10) allowed three runs on seven hits, struck out four and walked one over five innings in a victory against the Pirates on Wednesday. The Astros spotted him an early lead, and he was able to hold onto it through five. He threw 67 of his 99 pitches for strikes and induced 10 ground ball outs. He is now 8-10 with a 5.01 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 141 strikeouts in 142.0 innings this season.
Aug 20 2016McHugh didn't factor into the decision Friday versus the Orioles, giving up seven runs (six earned) on nine hits, including four homers, and a walk over three innings. He struck out four.He was haunted by the long ball in a surreal first inning. The trouble started from the first batter, as Adam Jones touched him up for a leadoff 371-foot solo shot. Two batters later, Manny Machado drove in Hyun-Soo Kim with a 416-foot blast and Chris Davis one-upped him with a 450-foot bomb immediately afterwards. Mark Trumbo then rubbed salt in the wound with a 401-foot round-tripper of his own to cap off the nightmarish opening frame. McHugh had a one-inning reprieve before running into trouble again in the third by giving up an RBI single to Jonathan Schoop and then allowing Matt Wieters score on a wild pitch. The 29-year-old has not secured a victory since July 29 versus the Tigers and will try to get back in the win column versus the Pirates on Wednesday.
Aug 14 2016McHugh (7-10) gave up three earned runs on five hits and two walks over 5.1 innings in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Blue Jays. He struck out six.The veteran righty gave up a solo homer in the first to Josh Donaldson before settling down until the sixth. McHugh gave up back-to-back singles to Edwin Encarnacion and Michael Saunders before giving way to reliever James Hoyt, who promptly surrendered a three-run homer to Russell Martin that proved to be the difference in the game. McHugh has now dropped four straight decisions despite mustering quality starts in two of those outings. He'll try to get back in the win column when he faces the Orioles next Friday.
Aug 8 2016McHugh (7-9) allowed three runs on 10 hits and a walk and struck out six over seven innings in a loss Monday to the Twins.McHugh now has five quality starts in his last six outings but is just 2-3 over that span. He has showed flashes of brilliance, as he has struck out 10 batters three times this season, but he has lacked consistency. Monday marked the fourth time he has allowed 10 hits in a game, and he has given up at least four runs eight times in 23 starts.
Aug 4 2016McHugh (7-8) struck out 10 over six innings Wednesday against the Jays, but took the loss after allowing three runs on six hits. All three runs scored on solo homers, continuing McHugh's spike in long balls this year. An inflated BABIP has hurt him, but a sizable increase in homers has really put the icing on McHugh's worst full MLB campaign. On the bright side, he's improved on last season's disappointing strikeout rate, but the 29-year-old righty needs to do a better job keeping men off the bases and the ball in the park before he can be considered a reliable fantasy asset.
Jul 29 2016McHugh (7-7) was blasted in just 1.2 innings Friday versus the Tigers. He allowed eight runs on ten hits while recording just one strikeout in the loss. The outing was McHugh's worst since his opening start of the season against the Yankees (five runs in 0.1 inning) The right-hander entered the game with a 2.66 ERA in July, but it ballooned to 5.33, ruining what was shaping up to be his best month of the season so far. McHugh's rebound effort won't be easy as he'll take on a dangerous Blue Jays lineup Wednesday in his next start.
Jul 23 2016McHugh (7-6) allowed two runs on six hits while striking out six over six innings to earn the win Saturday against the Angels.McHugh was given a six-run lead in the fourth inning before allowing a pair of runs before his departure, and he easily earned his seventh victory of the year. He's now held opponents to two or fewer earned runs in six of his last seven starts to lower his ERA to 4.18 on the season. He'll make his next start Friday at the Tigers.
Jul 17 2016McHugh was excellent in Sunday's win over the Mariners, striking out 10 and walking four across six scoreless innings.McHugh impressively threw 66 percent of his pitches for strikes, including 12 of the swinging variety, and he impressively retired the side in order in four of his six innings. McHugh has been excellent of late, as he has posted a 2.41 ERA and an 8.9 K/9 rate over his last six starts, coming within a single out of tossing a quality start in each outing. His resurgence has been a big boost to the Astros in recent weeks, and he will look to keep it rolling Saturday at the Angels.
Jul 8 2016McHugh (5-6) allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three over six innings, but received no decision Friday against the Athletics.McHugh left the contest with a 6-4 lead, but the bullpen was unable to protect it for him. This was the first time he's allowed more than two earned runs in a start over his last five starts, and his ERA is now at 4.59. He'll make his next start after the All-Star break.
Jul 3 2016McHugh (5-6) allowed two runs on five hits and four walks while striking out nine over 5.2 innings to take the loss Sunday against the White Sox.Despite struggling to keep runners off the bases, McHugh left the contest with only a 2-1 deficit before the bullpen allowed the deficit to grow in an Astros' loss. He's now allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of his last four starts to lower his ERA to 4.50 on the season. He'll make his next start Friday against the Athletics.
Jun 27 2016McHugh allowed two runs on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts over six innings in a no-decision Monday against the Angels.McHugh now has three straight no-decisions despite quality starts in all three outings. He had a tough opening to the season, as he owned a 6.59 ERA after his first six starts, but he has tightened things up since then. In his 10 starts since, he now owns a 3.71 ERA with a sharp 59:17 K:BB. That's right about in line with his performance from 2015 -- 3.89 ERA, 3.2 K/BB in 203.2 innings -- and a fair representation of what to expect from McHugh going forward.
Jun 16 2016McHugh limited the Cardinals to one run over 6.2 innings Wednesday, but received no decision in an eventual 4-1 win. He struck out six while allowing seven hits and two walks. He matched zeroes with Adam Wainwright almost all the way through this game, only to give up a run in the seventh, but the Astros rallied to ensure he avoided the loss. After consecutive four-run outings, this is a breath of fresh air for McHugh, but he's got a long way to go yet to correct his ugly season stats. That highly inflated .359 BABIP will come down, bringing his ratios down with it, but it's highly unlikely that we'll ever see him match the sort of elite numbers he put up two seasons ago -- not to mention last year's 19 wins.
Jun 5 2016McHugh didn't factor into the decision against the A's on Saturday, giving up five hits, four earned runs and three walks over 5.1 innings. He also struck out five. The 28-year-old couldn't quite produce an outing the caliber of his complete-game effort versus the D-backs on May 30, but did enough to keep the Astros in the game after some early trouble. McHugh surrendered a two-run double to Chris Coghlan and a sacrifice fly to Josh Phegley in the second inning, before seeing his club tie the score back up in the home half of the frame. He held the A's scoreless otherwise, and was pulled after throwing 100 pitches in just over five innings. He'll try to get back in the win column at Globe Life Park next Thursday versus the Rangers.
May 30 2016McHugh (5-4) earned the win by tossing a complete game Monday against the Diamondbacks, allowing three runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out eight in the start.McHugh has seen his strikeout totals soar in this last three starts, fanning 26 in 21.1 innings. The righty's ERA and WHIP are still inflated from his horrendous first start of the season, but McHugh has consistently been lowering those numbers ever since. He'll take the ball next on Saturday against the Athletics.
May 25 2016McHugh struck out a season-high 10 batters Wednesday, but lasted just 5.1 innings against Baltimore, allowing three runs on eight hits and a walk.Despite this falling short even of the low standard for a quality start, it's promising to see the 28-year-old righty walk just one while missing plenty of bats for the second straight outing. Unfortunately, McHugh will probably be left remembering the painful ending more than anything else, as he gave up three hits and a wild pitch before being lifted. Fortunately, the Astros went on to win anyway.
May 19 2016McHugh (4-4) was a tough-luck loser Thursday, as he held the White Sox to just two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out a season-high eight in seven innings.Unfortunately, he had the poor fortune to be on the wrong side of White Sox ace Chris Sale's second straight complete game. This season has mostly been a total disaster for McHugh, but this was his best outing yet -- not just his best strikeout total, but also the best job he's done limiting baserunners while keeping the ball in the park. Even though he's still allowed four-plus runs five times in nine starts, which is a long way from cutting the mustard, this outing at least offers some optimism that things will be brighter moving forward.
May 15 2016McHugh's next start has been moved up to Thursday against the White Sox, the Houston Chronicle reports. The Astros planned to temporarily use a six-man rotation, but Mike Fiers ended up throwing 60 pitches in a relief appearance Sunday. He'll now switch spots with McHugh, who was previously scheduled to face the Ranger son Saturday.
May 14 2016McHugh didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 6-5 extra-inning loss to the Red Sox, surrendering 10 hits, four earned runs and three walks over six innings. He struck out two.The 28-year-old pitched to plenty of contact, inducing only four swinging strikes and giving up 10 hits for the third start this season. He also surrendered a homer for the fourth straight appearance, despite eliciting double-digit ground balls. McHugh also struggled with his control over his six frames on the mound, issuing a season-high three walks, and now has a 1.71 WHIP on the season to go along with a 5.58 ERA.
May 9 2016McHugh (4-3) allowed one run on five hits and one walk over seven innings Sunday, striking out five, to notch the win in a 5-1 victory over the Mariners. His one mistake resulted in a solo home run by Robinson Cano, but otherwise this may have been McHugh's best start of the season. He's had an ugly beginning to his campaign, but he'll try to build on this win in his next start, Friday in Boston.
May 3 2016McHugh allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts over 5.2 innings in a win Tuesday over the Twins.McHugh induced 12 swinging strikes and was nasty at times, but he was touched up for a pair of home runs. McHugh has a decent 23:7 K:BB in 27.1 innings, but hitters are squaring him up with ease this season. Opposing batters now have 43 hits and a .411 BABIP against McHugh in 2016. Hits won't keep dropping against McHugh like this forever, but his velocity is down from 2015 (89.8 MPH average fastball) and he is allowing more line drives and fly balls in 2016 than he did last season.
Apr 28 2016McHugh (2-3) needed 101 pitches to get through five innings in Seattle on Wednesday, but allowed just two runs on five hits and a walk en route to the win. He struck out three. The 28-year-old hurler has been less than impressive to open the year, with one sparkling start against the Royals having been buried by four outings that don't inspire a ton of confidence. This one doesn't either -- if this is what qualifies as a good start from McHugh, he and his fantasy owners are in for a long season.
Apr 11 2016McHugh (1-1) defeated the Royals on Monday behind seven shutout innings in which he struck out four, walked one, and allowed eight hits.McHugh's strongest aspect is his control, and he pounded the zone Monday night against the Royals. He tossed 72 strikes against just 30 balls and threw first pitch strikes to 19 of 30 hitters. Despite the brilliant start, McHugh's ERA is still an ugly 6.14, as he failed to get out of the first inning in a disastrous first start of the season against the Yankees. McHugh has a 3.39 ERA in 358.1 innings over the past two seasons, so don't let that first start color your perceptions.
Apr 6 2016McHugh (0-1) only got one out in Wednesday's start against the Yankees, giving up six runs (five earned) on thee hits and two walks in the process. After a catcher's interference call put Jacoby Ellsbury on to start the game, McHugh completely imploded, loading the game with consecutive walks, then giving up two hits before getting his lone out on an RBI grounder by Carlos Beltran. The 28-year-old's first start of the season could hardly have gone worse, and it highlights the fact that McHugh -- despite coming off a 2015 in which he set new career bests in innings (203.2), strikeouts (171) and wins (19) -- isn't a high-end fantasy starter. He'll have better days than this, that's for sure, especially because the Astros should be good; still, we shouldn't count on him rediscovering the strikeout-per-inning form he flashed out of nowhere two years ago.
Mar 25 2016McHugh will start the second game of the season for the Astros, the Houston Chronicle's Evan Drellich reports. There was little doubt about where McHugh stood in the pecking order, but the Astros confirmed that he will start Apr. 6 against the Yankees. The 28-year-old righty topped 200 innings for the first time last year, and is a solid bet to do so again if he stays healthy, bringing with him a likely sub-4.00 ERA and sub-1.30 WHIP.
Mar 15 2016McHugh allowed three runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts over 3.2 innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League loss to Washington. The 28-year-old, who has a 3.12 ERA and 7:2 K:BB ratio over 8.2 Grapefruit League innings thus far, will slot second or third in the Astros' rotation to open 2016.
Feb 29 2016McHugh will start the Astros' third Grapefruit League game Saturday against the Mets, Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh won a career-high 19 games for the Astros last season while posting a solid 3.89 ERA and 1.28 WHIP over a career-high 203.2 innings. He's the favorite to open 2016 as Houston's No. 3 starter behind Dallas Keuchel and Lance McCullers.
Oct 13 2015McHugh will start Game 5 of the ALDS Wednesday against the Royals.McHugh will be looking for his second win of the series after picking up the victory in Game 1. He is slated to square off against the Royals' Johnny Cueto in the decisive Game 5 Wednesday night.
Oct 9 2015McHugh allowed two runs on four hits and a walk with one strikeout over six innings Thursday to earn the win in Game 1 of the ALDS against the Royals.McHugh allowed two solo home runs during the game -- both to Kendrys Morales -- but he combined with Tony Sipp, Will Harris, Oliver Perez and Luke Gregerson to hold the Royals' offense scoreless otherwise. If the Astros choose to pitch McHugh on four days rest, he'll take the hill for Game 4 of the ALDS on Monday, otherwise he's likely to pitch Game 5, if necessary, on October 14.
Oct 7 2015McHugh will start Game 1 of the ALDS against the Royals, Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh was hit-or-miss over his final few starts, but he threw the ball very well after the All-Star break, posting a 3.11 ERA over his final 14 starts. He will square off against the Royals' Yordano Ventura on Thursday night.
Oct 3 2015McHugh (19-7) was excellent over seven innings Saturday, allowing just one earned run on six hits and a walk while striking out six in a 6-2 win over the Diamondbacks.McHugh ended his season on a high note, earning his sixth win in his last seven outings and helping the Astros keep their one game lead in the AL West. The 28-year-old has enjoyed a career resurgence in the American League, posting excellent numbers in his two seasons with Houston after disappointing stints with the Mets and Rockies.
Sep 30 2015McHugh will have his next scheduled start pushed back to Saturday, Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh will take the mound for a road matchup against the Diamondbacks one day later than originally planned. He'll switch spots with Dallas Keuchel, who will be moved up a day in an effort to stick to his regular routine.
Sep 26 2015McHugh recovered from a rough first inning to pick up his 18th win of the season Saturday, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk over 6.2 innings while striking out six.He spotted the Rangers three runs in the opening frame, but settled down after that and let the Astros bats get to work. McHugh has now won four of five September starts despite a 4.31 ERA over that stretch, and he'll take the mound one more time in the regular season, facing the Diamondbacks on the road Friday.
Sep 21 2015McHugh (17-7) delivered one of his sharpest outings of the season Sunday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks with eight strikeouts over eight innings in a win over the A's.McHugh, who ranks second in the AL with 17 wins along with teammate Dallas Keuchel, rebounded Sunday after giving up five runs apiece in his previous two starts. The 28-year-old right-hander's next start will be an important one, as he'll face AL West division-leading Texas at home on Saturday.
Sep 15 2015McHugh gave up five runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out four over 3.2 innings Tuesday against the Rangers.McHugh has now given up 10 runs on 14 hits and five walks over his last two starts (nine innings), so it is hard to start the righty with confidence going forward. His ERA now sits at 4.05 through 182 innings -- a far cry from the 2.73 mark he posted in 154.2 innings last season. McHugh's next start will come Sunday at home against the A's.
Sep 4 2015McHugh (15-7) pitched 7.2 scoreless innings in Friday's win over the Twins, allowing seven hits and walk while striking out six. It's hard to imagine that McHugh's ERA stood at 5.08 in mid-June. After stringing together solid start after solid start since, McHugh has become a dependable arm for Houston and has been downright nasty since over the past month. Since Aug. 1, McHugh is boasting a 1.54 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and is averaging 8.78 K/9. You can count on him start in and start out down the stretch.
Aug 26 2015McHugh earned his 14th win of the season Wednesday with 6.1 innings of two-run ball against the Yankees. He fanned eight in the start, while pushing his ERA to 3.92 for the season. McHugh's strikeout rate has fallen from the 25.4% (9.1 K/9) mark that he posted a year ago, to 19.5% (7.4 K/9) in 2015. He has shown a slightly improved groundball rate (45.5%), and his swinging strike rate (11.0%) isn't far off of his 2014 mark (10.4%), so a slight bump in strikeouts the rest of the way seems to be within reach.
Aug 20 2015McHugh (13-7) pitched well Thursday in a losing effort, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over seven innings in a loss to the Rays. He struck out five.McHugh has been fantastic lately, but he was simply outdueled by Chris Archer on this night. Over his last four starts, he has gone at least six innings while allowing two runs or fewer. What has made McHugh so much better lately is his ability to limit the long balls. McHugh allowed 13 homers between May 2 and June 18, but he's really cleaned that up allowing just two since. He'll look to keep that run going in homer-friendly Yankee Stadium next Wednesday.
Aug 15 2015McHugh took another hard-luck loss Saturday night, allowing a single run in seven innings while registering seven strikeouts.McHugh's performance was dampened by a vintage Justin Verlander performance, but he was at least able to bring his ERA down to 4.09, its lowest mark since May. He'll get another crack at a win Thursday against the Rays.
Aug 8 2015McHugh was a tough-luck loser Saturday, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks over six innings while striking out eight. The Astros' bats couldn't solve Jesse Chavez, leaving McHugh with the loss despite a quality start, but given the inflated run support he's been seeing earlier in the year he was probably overdue for this kind of result. McHugh's next start comes next Saturday, at home against the Tigers.
Aug 3 2015McHugh went seven innings Sunday against the Diamondbacks to get the win, allowing one run on eight hits and a walk, striking out six.McHugh now has a whopping 13 wins, despite a 4.27 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. He has 20 wins in the last calendar year.
Jul 28 2015McHugh got his 12th win Tuesday against the Angels despite allowing five runs on seven hits and four walks over five innings. He struck out three.Control has been one of McHugh's strong points all season -- he had a 2.1 BB/9 entering the game and had walked over four batters just once before, in a quality start win June 18 at Colorado. McHugh was still missing bats (nine swinging strikes in 93 pitches) and picking up ground balls (seven against five fly balls), so the control issues can probably be dismissed as a blip.
Jul 23 2015McHugh (11-5) allowed seven hits and two runs in seven innings Wednesday against the Red Sox. He struck out four and walked one.McHugh started off hot, not allowing a hit for the first four innings. But he struggled in the sixth and seventh innings, allowing two runs on four consecutive hits to start the sixth before settling down after that to retire the next three batters and limit the damage. In the seventh, Boston started with two consecutive singles, but after a sacrifice bunt by Blake Swihart, McHugh got Dustin Pedroia to foul out and Brock Holt to strike out to leave the Red Sox empty-handed and end his night. Six of McHugh's last seven starts have been quality starts -- five of them wins. He'll try to get another in his next scheduled start Tuesday against the Angels.
Jul 17 2015McHugh (10-5) held the Rangers to just one run on 11 hits over six innings Friday en route to the win. He struck out four without issuing a walk. All 11 hits against McHugh were singles, and he was able to successfully navigate around them with the help of a couple double plays. The right-hander has now turned in quality starts in five of his last six turns, with the lone exception being a road loss to Boston back on July 4. He will look to avenge that loss in a home start against the Red Sox next week.
Jul 10 2015McHugh allowed three runs on four hits, walking one and striking out six over seven innings of a 3-1 loss to Tampa Bay on Friday night.McHugh (9-5, 4.50 ERA) has been up and down all season, and has yet to consistently perform up to his 2014 standards. This was somewhat encouraging as he tossed five scoreless innings before the Rays got to him in the sixth and seventh innings. Still, he tossed just 96 pitches (64 for strikes) which would suggest fatigue should not have been a factor.
Jul 5 2015McHugh took the loss Saturday, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks over 5.1 innings while striking out only one. After three straight quality starts, McHugh fell right back into the doldrums as he can't seem to find his 2014 form. The Astros' offense has still carried him to nine wins on the season, but his 4.54 ERA and 85:27 K:BB ratio in 107 innings so far mark him as a player who only has real value in deeper AL-only formats going forward. He'll try to bounce back on Thursday in Cleveland.
Jun 23 2015McHugh improved to 8-3 with the win Tuesday over the Angels, as he allowed two runs on nine hits and a walk over eight innings. He struck out six.McHugh had lasted into the eighth just once in 14 previous starts, and Tuesday was the first time he's completed eight innings in 2015. He now has three quality starts in his last four appearances, but just a 4.80 ERA. He has allowed 13 home runs in 15 starts.
Jun 19 2015McHugh (7-3) allowed three runs on four hits and five walks with eight strikeouts over six innings during Thursday's 8-4 win at Colorado.McHugh looked like he was in for a rough afternoon after allowing a three-run homer in the first inning to Carlos Gonzalez, but he shook off his early troubles and held the Rockies hitless after the third inning. The 28-year-old right-hander will carry a 5.04 ERA into a two-start week against the Angels on Tuesday and Yankees on Sunday.
Jun 13 2015McHugh lasted just three innings Saturday, coughing up eight runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out only one.Logan Morrison did most of the damage against him with two home runs and five RBI, but McHugh wasn't much more successful against the rest of the Mariners' lineup. His ERA is now a woeful 5.08, and his 7.00 K/9 and 1.36 HR/9 rates are well off last year's pace. If those numbers weren't enough to convince you to remove him from your active roster, however, this might: McHugh's next start comes next Thursday in Colorado.
Jun 8 2015McHugh (6-2) allowed three runs on seven hits with a walk and three strikeouts over six innings Sunday, but received no decision in a 7-6 loss to Toronto.Despite allowing two home runs in the game, McHugh was actually in line for the victory before the Blue Jays rallied late to steal a win from the Astros. The 27-year-old right-hander will carry a 4.34 ERA into his next start Saturday against Seattle.
Jun 2 2015McHugh gave up four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six over seven innings against the Astros on Tuesday en route to notching his sixth win of the season. After giving up four runs in the second inning McHugh settled down and retired 15 of the last 16 batters he faced, with the lone baserunner coming on a walk to Travis Snider. The 27-year-old righty has been much less fortunate on balls in play this year (.317 BABIP) compared to 2014 (.259 BABIP) and his HR/FB rate has also spiked from 9.5 percent to 13.1 percent. While McHugh should not be expected to match the 2.73 ERA he posted last season, he is probably several ticks better than he has shown so far in 2015.
May 28 2015McHugh allowed four runs on nine hits with no walks and five strikeouts over six innings Wednesday, but took no decision in Houston's 5-4 loss to Baltimore.Baltimore got to McHugh in the fourth inning with five straight hits, including back-to-back home runs from Chris Davis and Steve Pearce. McHugh exited after the sixth inning with the Astros trailing 4-1, and while he didn't walk any batters, he labored through much of the game, throwing only 62 of his 101 pitches for strikes. He'll carry a 4.24 ERA into his next scheduled start Tuesday against the O's.
May 22 2015McHugh allowed three runs on nine hits, walking one and striking out two over seven innings of a 6-2 loss to the Tigers on Friday night.McHugh (5-2, 4.06 ERA) made just one real mistake in the game, but it was a big one, serving up a three-run home run to J.D. Martinez to give Detroit a lead they would never relinquish. After a sparkling season in 2014, McHugh has come back to Earth a bit this year with inconsistent command, and a declining strikeout rate. He remains a decent fantasy option, but he's not likely to completely return to his form from last season.
May 18 2015McHugh (5-1) limited the Blue Jays to two runs on six hits and a walk with nine strikeouts over seven innings in Sunday's win.McHugh rebounded after giving up seven runs (three earned) in his previous start against the Giants. May 13 2015McHugh suffered his first loss of the season Tuesday, as the Giants tagged him for seven runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 4.2 innings.Through seven starts for the Astros this season, McHugh (4-1) sports a 7.42 K/9, which is down from last year's 9.14 K/9 mark. Things don't get any easier for the 27-year-old as he lines up to face Toronto for his next start Sunday.
May 8 2015McHugh held the Angels to two runs on five hits and a walk with seven strikeouts over 7.1 innings Thursday, but took no decision in the Astros' 3-2 win.McHugh (4-0) gave up a solo home run to Mike Trout in the first inning, but pitched well enough to put himself in line for the victory. Houston's offense remained quiet throughout most of the game, however, as the team trailed 2-0 when he exited in the eighth inning. McHugh, who sports a 3.23 ERA and 33:7 K:BB ratio over 39 innings this season, will make his next start at home against San Francisco on Wednesday.
May 8 2015McHugh's next start will come Tuesday against the Giants, Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle reports.Monday's team off day will allow the Astros to move McHugh up to start Monday on regular rest and slot Brett Oberholtzer (finger) into the rotation Wednesday. That means McHugh is now lined up for a two-start week, with his second outing coming May 17 at home against Toronto.
Apr 28 2015McHugh limited the Padres to three runs on seven hits with no walks and five strikeouts over six innings Monday, but took no decision in the Astros' 9-4 win.McHugh permitted only two infield singles through four frames, but San Diego rallied in the fifth with three runs on four hits in that inning alone. Despite the minor hiccup, the 27-year-old right-hander is proving this season that last year's success was no fluke. Through four starts, McHugh is 3-0 with a 2.92 ERA and 23:4 K:BB over 24.2 innings. He'll make his next start Saturday at home against the Mariners.
Apr 22 2015McHugh earned his third victory of the season Tuesday after allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts over seven innings against the Mariners.Seattle put McHugh (3-0) to work early in the game, scoring runs off him in the first, third and fourth innings. He only allowed one base runner from the fifth through seventh innings, however, and the Astros' bats came alive in the top of the eighth inning to put him in line for the win. It wasn't McHugh's sharpest outing, but he'll carry a 2.41 ERA into his next scheduled start at San Diego on Monday.
Apr 16 2015McHugh improved to 2-0 this season after fanning 11 batters over 5.2 innings against the A's on Wednesday.McHugh gave up one run on six hits with no walks in the game and didn't appear to be limited by the tender finger issue that led to his precautionary removal from his first start of the season. Through two starts, he has a 1.54 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 15:2 K:BB over 11.2 innings. McHugh is likely to make his next start at Seattle on Tuesday.
Apr 10 2015McHugh was lifted a bit early from Friday's start as a precaution due to a tender finger, Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh's removal appears to be precautionary to prevent a larger issue, but it's worth monitoring to ensure nothing more comes of the issue. Assuming all checks out fine, his next scheduled start would likely come Wednesday against the Athletics.
Mar 18 2015Astros manager A.J. Hinch announced Wednesday that McHugh will start the third or fourth game of the season, Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle reports. With Dallas Keuchel and Scott Feldman ahead of him in the Astros' starting rotation, McHugh will draw a home start against Cleveland on April 9 or be on the mound at Texas on April 10. How quickly Brett Oberholtzer (back) heals from injury and whomever wins the competition for Houston's fifth starter job will ultimately determine where McHugh lands in the rotation. The 27-year-old has a 6.14 ERA and 9:3 K:BB ratio over 7.1 spring innings thus far.
Mar 5 2015McHugh breezed through two scoreless frames Thursday in the Astros' Grapefruit League opener, striking out three while walking one against the Phillies."In terms of just kind of mental space, it's different because I've never been here, never broken camp with a team before," McHugh said. "It's different, but I'm excited because I'm honored to be called one of the five guys who gets the ball." The 27-year-old right-hander is likely to open 2015 as Houston's No. 2 starter behind Dallas Keuchel.
Mar 2 2015McHugh will start the Astros' Grapefruit League opener Thursday against Philadelphia, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.McHugh opens camp fresh off an impressive 2014 campaign, during which he went 11-9 with a 2.73 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 157:41 K:BB in 154.2 innings for the Astros. His breakout season assured him a spot in Houston's starting rotation to open 2015.
Sep 22 2014McHugh has been shut down for the remainder of the regular season, Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh has recorded quality starts in 9 of his last 10 outings, but the Astros have decided that they've seen enough this season. He's made 28 starts so far this season between the Astros and their Triple-A affiliate, accumulating a career-high 173.2 innings. With the team securely out of the playoff hunt, there's little incentive to push McHugh much harder.
Sep 22 2014McHugh won his fifth straight start Sunday, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk with six strikeouts over six innings against the Mariners.McHugh (11-9) has won seven of his last 10 starts for the Astros and hasn't lost a game since July. The 27-year-old right-hander will carry a 2.73 ERA into his last scheduled start of the season against the Mets -- his former team -- on Sunday.
Sep 15 2014McHugh left Monday's game after getting hit in the wrist and knee with a comebacker, Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh had been making a spot start in place of Brad Peacock (back), and this new development surely can't help his chances of remaining in the rotation. The severity of the injury has yet to be disclosed by the team, but the Astros may be looking for another spot starter this weekend against the Mariners if they don't receive good news. The timing is poor for McHugh, who had held the Indians to one unearned run on five hits with seven strikeouts over 6.2 innings before exiting.
Sep 15 2014McHugh (forearm) isn't expected to miss his next scheduled start, MLB.com's Brian McTaggart reports.McHugh took a shot off the bat of Lonnie Chisenhall in Monday night's game, and although he was forced to exit, it sounds as if the right-hander is simply dealing with a bruise. The right-hander doesn't expect to miss his next scheduled start, and considering that the ailment is affecting his non-pitching hand, that notion seems like a reasonable possibility.
Sep 15 2014Updating a previous report, McHugh left Monday's game due to a left forearm contusion, MLB.com's Brian McTaggart reports.McHugh originally injured the arm on a comebacker in the seventh inning, and he looks to have avoided any major damage. Depending on how the bruising heals in the coming days, there's a chance he could still be available this weekend.
Sep 14 2014Raburn (knee) showed little improvement Sunday and could be headed for an MRI if he doesn't make much progress in the next few days, MLB.com reports. "He won't do anything today other than get treatment, and then we'll kind of see how the next day or so goes. If he starts to improve, that's good. If he doesn't, then we'd probably think about getting him an MRI or something," manager Terry Francona said. There's a chance that Raburn's season will come to a premature end if he doesn't improve and the MRI shows anything more significant than the hyperextension. Consider him day-to-day for now.
Sep 10 2014McHugh (9-9) shut down the Mariners on Tuesday, permitting only one run on two hits with no walks and four strikeouts over eight innings to earn his ninth win of the season. An infield single and a solo home run were McHugh's lone blemishes on the night in an otherwise dominant performance against the Astros' AL West division rivals. The 27-year-old has won five of his last six starts.
Sep 4 2014McHugh stifled the Angels on Wednesday, limiting them to one run on four hits with no walks and eight strikeouts over 7.2 innings to earn his eighth victory of the season.McHugh (8-9) has been a pleasant surprise for the Astros this season after a rough spring led him to begin 2014 with Triple-A Oklahoma City. He was called up in late April and hasn't looked back since, compiling a 2.89 ERA and 140:40 K:BB over 134 innings. McHugh lines up to face the Mariners for his next start on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old right-hander will look stifle the Red Sox in Boston for his next scheduled start Sunday.
Aug 8 2014McHugh (4-9) was excellent Thursday, limiting the Phillies to one run on five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts over seven innings. He did not factor into the decision, however, as Philadelphia came from behind to win the game after he departed.Don't let the 4-9 record fool you. McHugh has been one of Houston's best starting pitchers this season, posting excellent ratios across the board. With a 3.18 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and a 10.15 K/9 through 17 starts, he's definitely earned his keep after failing to break camp with the club out of spring training. McHugh lines up for two starts next week, drawing Minnesota at home on Tuesday and the Red Sox in Boston on Sunday.
Jul 28 2014McHugh (4-9) struck out nine in his return from the DL Sunday, but took the loss after permitting four runs on seven hits and a walk over 6.1 innings against Miami. While two of the seven hits McHugh allowed were home runs, the fact he maintained a high strikeout rate after dealing with a finger injury is encouraging. He'll carry a 3.45 ERA and 102:34 K:BB over 88.2 innings into his next scheduled start Friday against Toronto.
Jul 27 2014McHugh (finger) was activated from the 15-day DL on Sunday.McHugh tossed a successful rehab outing Tuesday, which put him in line to be activated to start Sunday's game against the Marlins. The 27-year-old right-hander last pitched on July 6, and owns a 3.28 ERA and 1.11 WHIP over 14 starts this season. He'll square off against Jacob Turner on Sunday afternoon.
Jul 26 2014McHugh (finger) will come off the DL on Sunday to make his first start in the majors since July 6, Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh pitched a successful rehab stint in Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday where he struck out five in five innings and only gave up one run. It's still unclear who he'll replace in the rotation, but manager Bo Porter said that decision should be announced Sunday.
Jul 25 2014McHugh (finger) is ready to return and the Astros will update their starting rotation schedule Saturday, Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle reports.Presumably, Brett Oberholtzer will lose his rotation spot when the Astros shuffle the deck Saturday, but it's not immediately clear when McHugh is going to make his next big league start.
Jul 23 2014Astros manager Bo Porter said McHugh (finger) is ready to return from the DL, but they'll wait to make a decision regarding his activation until the team goes through its rotation, Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh, who suffered a right middle fingernail avulsion on July 6, allowed a run on three hits and walk with five strikeouts over five innings in a rehab start for Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday. He'll likely return from the DL to start against Miami on July 27, but the Astros have not yet decided what their corresponding move will be.
Jul 22 2014McHugh (finger) will make a rehab appearance for Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.Placed on the DL on July 12, retroactive to July 7, McHugh will make his first rehab appearance in hopes of returning to the big league club in the near future. Barring a setback, he could rejoin the Astros as soon as this weekend.
Jul 19 2014McHugh (finger) will make his first, and likely only, rehab start at Triple-A Oklahoma City, Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh was placed on the DL just before the break due to an avulsion in his right middle fingernail. The aforementioned rehab outing won't allow the righty to return when first eligible Tuesday in Oakland, thereby ensuring Brett Oberholtzer another start with the Astros. There's been no word on a specific date for McHugh's upcoming nod, but he likely won't be activated until next weekend at the earliest.
Jul 17 2014McHugh (finger) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Friday, Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh is expected to start the series opener against the Athletics on July 22, but will have to get through a bullpen session unscathed. Provided everything goes as planned, the right-hander would then be activated from the DL prior to that contest, and remain in the rotation moving forward. He wasn't expected to miss more than one turn while on the DL, and as it currently stands, this plan remains in tact.
Jul 12 2014McHugh (finger) will be placed on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Monday, Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle reports. This is largely procedural, as McHugh is still expected to miss only one turn in the rotation as a result of the right middle finger avulsion. He is expected to come off the DL to start the team's fourth game after the All-Star break, July 22 against the A's. Brett Oberholtzer will be up to start in McHugh's place Saturday opposite the Red Sox's Jake Peavy.
Jul 11 2014McHugh (finger) will not start Saturday against the Red Sox.McHugh made it through a bullpen session unscathed earlier in the week, after leaving his last start with a right middle fingernail avulsion, but the Astros don't want to push their luck and will instead turn to Brett Oberholtzer to start Saturday. The injury should not prevent McHugh from being part of the team's rotation plans coming out of the break.
Jul 8 2014McHugh (finger) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, the Houston Chronicle's Evan Drellich reports. He left Sunday's start against the Angels with a right middle fingernail avulsion, and while he will throw Wednesday, it would be best to continue to monitor his progress leading up to his scheduled start Saturday, just to make sure he doesn't get scratched.
Jul 7 2014McHugh left Sunday's game against the Angels after four innings due to a right middle fingernail avulsion, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.McHugh (4-8), whose fingernail was pulled away from the skin, also took the loss Sunday after surrendering three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts over four innings against the Angels. While the injury does not appear to be serious, McHugh is most likely questionable to make his next scheduled start Saturday against Boston. This close to the All-Star break, Astros manager Bo Porter may choose to skip his next start to allow his injury more time to heal. That considered, it's possible that McHugh will make his next start for Houston after the All-Star break.
Jul 1 2014McHugh dropped his fourth straight decision on Monday after allowing five runs on five hits and four walks with eight strikeouts over six innings in a loss to the Mariners.Among his five hits allowed, McHugh (4-7) served up three home runs in the game (two in the fourth inning). It was the first time in eight starts that he's given up more than three runs in a game. Despite four straight losses, McHugh still owns a 3.22 ERA and 89:31 K:BB over 78.1 innings this season for the Astros. He'll look to get back in the win column against the Angels on Saturday in Anaheim.
Jun 26 2014McHugh allowed three runs on only three hits and two walks with nine strikeouts over seven strong innings Wednesday against the Braves, but took the loss in the game to fall to 4-6 this season.McHugh certainly pitched well enough for the win, but received no run support from the sputtering Astros offense. In fact, Houston has only scored one run in McHugh's last three starts combined. No less, the 27-year-old right-hander will carry an impressive 2.86 ERA and 81:27 K:BB over 72.1 innings into a two-start week against AL West division rivals. McHugh lines up for a home start against Mariners on Monday, before visiting the Angels on Saturday.
Jun 13 2014HcHugh (finger) has been confirmed as Friday's starter against the Rays. The right-hander developed a blister while warming up for his last start and it likely contributed to his wildness (five walks) against the Twins. McHugh said that he's had issues with blisters since college but they've "always been manageable," and clearly the training and coaching staffs are convinced that he's good to go for Friday.
Jun 9 2014McHugh suffered a blister on the middle finger of his throwing hand on Sunday, which may have attributed to his control problems against the Twins, Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh, who walked five batters in 4.1 innings Sunday, said he noticed the blister in his bullpen before the game, and it started to become and issue from the third inning on. "I've had some issues with it since college, but it's always been manageable, so I don't expect this to be any different," McHugh said of his minor injury. Consider him day-to-day for now, with a good chance of taking his normal turn in the rotation against Tampa Bay on Friday.
Jun 8 2014McHugh allowed three runs on three hits and five walks with six strikeouts over 4.1 innings Sunday in a no-decision against Minnesota.McHugh (4-3) displayed spotty control Sunday, throwing only 57 of his 101 pitches for strikes in just 4.1 innings against the Twins. His next start is likely to come on Sunday at Minnesota or Monday at Arizona, depending on whether Houston goes with a five or six-man starting rotation. Both are nice match-ups for the 26-year-old right-hander, who has given up two earned runs or less in four of his last five starts.
May 28 2014McHugh fired seven scoreless innings on Tuesday, limiting the Royals to five hits while striking out nine to earn his third win of the season.McHugh (3-3) did not allow a run or walk a batter in the game, and improved his ERA to 2.80 through seven starts. The opposition is hitting just .195 off the 26-year-old right-hander, who appears to have earned his keep in the Astros' starting rotation. McHugh will face a much better offense next time out, however, as he'll draw the Orioles at home on Sunday.
May 22 2014McHugh took the loss Wednesday in Anaheim, permitting two runs on four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over seven innings against the Angels. The Astros offense mustered only one run on two hits in support of McHugh, who certainly pitched well enough to earn the victory, but instead fell to 2-3 on the season. The 26-year-old lines up for two starts next week, a road start at Kansas City on Monday and a home start against Baltimore on Saturday.

He'll carry a 2.81 ERA into his next scheduled start Friday against the White Sox.
May 8 2014McHugh will start Saturday against the Orioles, Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh will get at least one more chance to prove himself worthy of a rotation spot, Saturday against Miguel Gonzalez and the Orioles. The right-hander was brilliant in his first two starts of the year (five hits, one run over 15.1 innings), but was knocked around for five earned runs his last time out and owns a 7.16 ERA over 66.2 career innings at the major league level.
May 4 2014McHugh struggled against the Mariners on Sunday, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits and a walk with four strikeouts over four innings. He fell to 2-1 on the season after the loss.McHugh opened the season with two dominant starts, but was roughed up Sunday as Seattle touched him up for four runs on five hits and a walk in the third inning alone. His next start will likely come Friday at Baltimore, but Scott Feldman's (biceps) upcoming return from the disabled list could alter Houston's rotation plans by a day or two.
May 1 2014McHugh will start Sunday against the Mariners, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.McHugh was called up from Triple-A to replace Scott Feldman when he went on the disabled list and has earned his keep in the Astros' starting rotation after two dominant performances. Among those performances was a 5-2 win over Seattle on April 22, during which he struck out 12.
Apr 27 2014McHugh will remain in the Astros rotation, MLB.com's Brian McTaggart reports. "He's earned his keep," said manager Bo Porter.McHugh has now turned in two impressive starts since joining the rotation, giving up just one earned run and striking out 19 on his way to a 2-0 record. His recent performance has earned him some fantasy consideration, especially in deeper and AL-only formats.
Apr 27 2014McHugh was excellent for the second straight start Sunday, allowing one run on two hits and three walks with seven strikeouts over 8.2 innings in the Astros' 5-1 win over the Athletics.McHugh nearly went the distance for a complete game shutout, but gave up an RBI single to Alberto Callaspo after plunking Brandon Moss and allowing him to steal second base. Raul Valdes came on to retire Craig Gentry for the last out of the game. Through two starts, McHugh has a miniscule 0.59 ERA and 0.52 WHIP with a 19:3 K:BB ratio over 15.1 innings. He's a safe bet to stick in the Astros' starting rotation, even when Scott Feldman returns from the disabled list.
Apr 22 2014McHugh was superb in his season debut, sitting down 12 Mariners while giving up no runs and just three hits over 6.2 innings in a 5-2 win, the first of his career. The 26-year-old righty wasted no time setting the tone at Safeco Field, striking out all three batters in the bottom of the first. McHugh got a nice burst of offense from the Astros hitters, who swatted three home runs in support of him
Apr 21 2014McHugh will start Tuesday's game in Seattle.McHugh will replace Scott Feldman in the rotation while the latter recovers from biceps tendinitis. Of his four appearances at Triple-A Oklahoma City in 2014, McHugh has two starts to his name but no outing longer than five innings. Overall, he's posted no decisions with a 4.50 ERA, 1.214 WHIP, and 8:5 K:BB in 14 frames.
Apr 21 2014McHugh will be called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City to take Scott Feldman's (biceps) place in the Astros' rotation, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.Feldman was diagnosed with biceps tendinitis Monday, which spurred his placement on the DL. GM Jeffrey Luhnow deemed the injury as "nothing too concerning," but McHugh should garner a couple starts in Feldman's absence. On the season, McHugh has made four appearances (two starts) at Oklahoma City, accumulating a 4.50 ERA, 1.214 WHIP, and 8:5 K:BB in 14 innings.
Mar 14 2014McHugh was roughed up again for three runs on four hits and walk over 1.2 innings Thursday against the Blue Jays.McHugh's spring ERA increased to 14.29 after the performance, and his chances at winning a rotation spot out of camp are looking bleaker by the day. Most likely, the 26-year-old right-hander will open 2014 in the minors.
