Jun 29 2025Pressly worked a scoreless ninth inning with a strikeout in Saturday's 12-3 win over the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly closed things out Saturday, though it was far from a save situation. It was also his first game action in four days. The veteran righty managed to secure a save back on June 12, but since then, Daniel Palencia has rattled off the team's last three saves. Pressly is at least pitching better after a rough start to the season, as he now has a 1.23 ERA over his last 15 appearances. However, it appears that Palencia is the clear closer in Chicago at this point, with Pressly working in a setup role along with Porter Hodge and Drew Pomeranz.
Jun 12 2025Pressly tossed a scoreless inning of relief to earn the save in Thursday's 3-2 win over the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After getting pulled from the closer role earlier in the year due to poor play, Pressly managed to secure his first save since April 13, and he only needed six pitches to shut the door. The veteran has seemingly turned a corner, as he's now strung together 14 straight appearances without allowing an earned run, which has lowered his ERA from 7.62 to 3.81. It's also noteworthy that Daniel Palencia, who had stepped up as the Cubs' primary closer during Pressly's demotion, worked the eighth inning Thursday. It may be too early to say that Pressly is the unquestioned closer in Chicago, though he has certainly regained enough trust to get back into the ninth inning mix, and his fantasy stock is once again on the rise.
Jun 9 2025Pressly, who tossed a scoreless inning of relief with two strikeouts in Monday's 4-3, extra-innings loss to the Phillies, has now gone 12 straight appearances without allowing an earned run. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was hammered for eight earned runs without recording an out back on May 6, but since then, he's allowed just a single unearned run across 11 innings to go along with 10 strikeouts. The veteran righty has lowered his ERA from 7.62 to 4.13 in the process. Daniel Palencia, who took the loss Monday but still has a sparkling 1.96 ERA, has emerged as the team's top closing option, though Pressly could push his way back into the picture if he continues to pitch well. At the very least, he's seemingly done enough to at least earn some trust in high-leverage spots, potentially as a setup man for now.
May 29 2025Pressly, who has rattled off eight straight scoreless appearances, last recorded a save on April 13. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since allowing nine runs (eight earned) in a nightmare of an outing back on May 6, Pressly has gone on his ongoing scoreless streak, though he's fallen out of the closer role as well. Daniel Palencia, who recorded the save in Wednesday's 2-1 win over the Rockies, now has four saves over the last week and a 1.64 ERA this month. As long as Palencia is pitching well, he should stay ahead of Pressly in the bullpen pecking order, with Porter Hodge (oblique) likely set to slide back into a setup role when he returns from the injured list. Pressly's subpar numbers, along with Palencia's emergence and Hodge's eventual return, has diminished the former's fantasy appeal.
May 13 2025Pressly was not used in a save situation Monday, as Drew Pomeranz instead closed out the 5-2 win over the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly last pitched Friday, so fatigue shouldn't have been an issue. It appears the Cubs are ready to try other options at the end of games due to Pressly's struggles. The veteran righty has a 7.07 ERA and 1.93 WHIP, and he's only struck out six batters across 14 innings. Porter Hodge seemed like the most likely ninth-inning alternative coming into the year, but he's also struggled with a 5.71 ERA of his own. The Chicago bullpen is in flux at the moment, and while Pressly could re-emerge as the closer at some point, his fantasy stock is trending down for now.
May 10 2025Pressly worked around a hit and a walk to pitch a scoreless inning of relief in Friday's 7-2 loss to the Mets. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly's last appearance Tuesday was a nightmare as he allowed nine runs (eight earned) on five hits and one walk without recording an out. The veteran righty was better Friday, though he's still stuck with an ugly 7.07 ERA. The Cubs haven't presented any save opportunities since Tuesday, and it remains to be seen if Pressly will get the team's next chance or if someone like Porter Hodge is asked to step up instead.
May 6 2025Pressly (2-2) was tagged with the loss against the Giants on Tuesday, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on five hits and one walk in the 11th inning. He did not record an out. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was brought in for the 11th inning with the game tied 5-5, but things fell off the rails for the veteran closer. Six of the eight batters he faced logged a plate appearance that resulted in at least one run scored, and he was mercifully lifted from the game after giving up an RBI single to Wilmer Flores. Pressly did not give up an earned run in any of his previous 10 outings, but Tuesday's performance rose his ERA from 2.08 to 7.62 and his WHIP from 1.46 to 1.92.
Apr 19 2025Pressly (2-1) worked around a hit to toss a scoreless inning of relief and earn the win in Friday's 13-11 victory over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Cubs led 7-1 in this one, and then allowed 10 straight Arizona runs in the eighth inning before rallying back in the bottom of the frame for the wild win. While Pressly worked the ninth and preserved a two-run lead, the scorer credited him with a win rather than a save due to ineffective Chicago relief work in that eighth inning as the lead evaporated. The veteran righty had some hiccups earlier in the season, but he's now strung together seven straight scoreless appearances, and he's a perfect 4-for-4 in save opportunities.
Apr 16 2025Pressly (1-1) picked up the win Tuesday, striking out one in a perfect inning of relief during a 2-1 extra-inning victory over the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After the Cubs' closer breezed through the ninth inning on 16 pitches (11 strikes), Nico Hoerner led off the 10th with an RBI triple to deliver the game-winning run. Pressly has reeled off six straight scoreless appearances, and while his ratios (3.00 ERA, 1.89 WHIP, 4:6 K:BB in nine innings) remain a little shaky, he's 4-for-4 in converting save chances.
Apr 13 2025Pressly earned the save in Sunday's 4-2 victory over the Dodgers, pitching a clean inning with one strikeout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran reliever made quick work closing out this win, completing the task in seven pitches, all of which were strikes. Pressly is now a perfect 4-for-4 in saves opportunities this season. However, under the hood, the 34-year-old has shown signs of slowing down, as his 3.38 ERA across eight innings is underpinned by a 6.11 FIP, 2.13 WHIP and 3:6 K:BB.
Apr 6 2025Pressly (0-1) allowed an unearned run on a hit and a walk in an inning of work to take the loss Sunday against the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was tasked with the top of the ninth inning in a 7-7 game, and the righty almost escaped with no damage, but Justin Turner committed a fielding error on what could have been an inning-ending double play. The unearned run saddled Pressly with his first loss of the year in an 8-7 San Diego victory. The veteran righty hasn't been dominant for the Cubs with a 4.50 ERA across six innings of work, though he has converted all three of his save opportunities.
Apr 4 2025Pressly secured the save in Friday's 3-1 win against the Padres, allowing one hit and one walk with one strikeout in a scoreless ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly labored through the ninth frame, throwing only 17 of his 33 pitches for strikes, but he managed to escape with his third save in as many chances. While he's ultimately done his job so far, the 36-year-old owns an unimpressive 5.40 ERA, 2.60 WHIP and 2:5 K:BB through five innings in 2025.
Apr 2 2025Pressly gave up a hit in a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday to record his second save of the season in a 7-4 win over the A's. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander has appeared in four of the Cubs' first eight games and hasn't exactly been dominant, posting a 6.75 ERA and 1:4 K:BB in four innings, but he's 2-for-2 in converting save chances. Pressly should remain Chicago's closer as long as he's getting the job done, but if his struggles continue and begin to turn into blown saves, Porter Hodge -- who picked up his third hold Tuesday and has yet to give up a run in four innings with a 5:3 K:BB -- is ready to step in.
Mar 29 2025Pressly picked up a save against the Diamondbacks on Saturday, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out one batter over one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly had a cushy three-run lead to work with when he got the ball in the ninth inning, but the veteran righty nearly gave the game away. He allowed Arizona to pull to within a run before making an out when Eugenio Suarez tagged him for a two-run homer, and Arizona put the tying run on base when Gabriel Moreno followed with a single. Pressly managed to retire the next two batters, but he walked Ketel Marte, and then allowed Corbin Carroll to reach base on an infield single. However, Garrett Hampson made a baserunning blunder on the hit and was tagged out after reaching third base, allowing Pressly to escape with his first save as a Cub. He should have some leash given his veteran status, but if Pressly were to struggle for an extended period, Porter Hodge -- who saved nine games for Chicago last season -- would be waiting in the wings.
Jan 29 2025Pressly said at his introductory press conference with the Cubs on Wednesday that he was told by the team he would close some games this season, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly went on to compliment incumbent closer Porter Hodge and added that he planned to go into spring training competing for the ninth-inning gig. While Hodge fared well as the Cubs' closer down the stretch of the 2024 season, Pressly should enter 2025 as the clear favorite for the role. The 36-year-old has regressed over the last two seasons but still been plenty effective, holding a 3.54 ERA and 132:34 K:BB over 122 regular-season frames.
Jan 26 2025Pressly will waive his no-trade clause and is set to be traded by the Astros to the Cubs in exchange for Juan Bello, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Astros will also be sending money to help cover some of Pressly's $14 million salary, per Chandler Rome of The Athletic. The trade is pending Pressly passing his physical, but the expectation is that the 36-year-old right-hander will be the Cubs' closer for the 2025 campaign. Bob Nightengale of USA Today relays that the move also opens the door for the Astros to bring Alex Bregman back. Pressly appeared in 59 regular-season games for Houston in 2024, registering 25 saves with a 3.49 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 58:18 K:BB across 56.2 innings.
Sep 15 2024Pressly pitched 1.2 scoreless innings while allowing two hits to earn the save Saturday against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly entered the game with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth inning. He allowed a single to the first batter he faced but still managed to escape the frame with a one-run lead. The ninth inning was less adventurous for Pressly, and he picked up his fourth save. Josh Hader had pitched three times in the last four games and in back-to-back contests, leaving him unavailable Saturday.
Sep 13 2024Pressly (2-3) allowed one earned run on one hit and one walk while striking out two to earn the win Thursday against the A's. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly gave up the game-tying home run in the eighth inning and has now allowed an earned run in five of his last 10 appearances. He was bailed out by an Astros rally in the bottom of the eighth and picked up his second win of the season -- both of which have come in his last five outings.
Aug 31 2024Pressly earned a save against the Royals on Saturday, allowing one hit and striking out one batter over one scoreless inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Primary closer Josh Hader pitched both Thursday and Friday, so he was unavailable for Saturday's contest. As a result, Houston manager Joe Espada turned to Pressly -- who racked up 90 saves as the team's closer from 2021 to 2023 -- to slam the door shut in the ninth inning against Kansas City. The right-hander allowed a two-out single but had little trouble finishing off KC. Pressly may get an occasional save chance when Hader is held out, but his primary role moving forward will likely be to serve as one of the Astros' top setup men.
Aug 29 2024The Astros activated Pressly (back) from the 15-day injured list Thursday, Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly missed just the minimum 15 days while recovering from a lower-back strain. He did not go out on a rehab assignment, but manager Joe Espada is unlikely to shy away from using Pressly in high-leverage spots right away.
Aug 26 2024Pressly (back) threw a live batting practice session Monday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Everything seemed to go fine for the veteran reliever. Pressly is not expected to need a rehab assignment and is eligible for activation Thursday, so Monday's live BP session was likely the final hurdle he needed to clear before he's deemed fit to return. He's been out since mid-August with a lower-back strain.
Aug 21 2024Pressly (back) threw a bullpen session at Minute Maid Park on Wednesday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly landed on the injured list over the weekend with a lower-back strain but is already moving through a throwing program. Astros manager Joe Espada said that Pressly probably won't require a rehab assignment, so the reliever would seem to have a shot to be ready for activation from the 15-day injured list Aug. 29 when he's first eligible.
Aug 20 2024Astros manager Joe Espada said that Pressly (back) played catch Monday, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a lower-back strain, but the fact that he resumed throwing two days later bodes well for his chances of rejoining the Astros when first eligible Aug. 29. Espada said that the right-hander had been nursing the back strain for about two weeks before he was deactivated over the weekend.
Aug 17 2024The Astros placed Pressly on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Wednesday, due to a lower back strain, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's not clear when Pressly sustained the strain, but he has given up one earned run in each of his last four outings. In his 10 outings since the All-Star break, he's recorded six holds and two blown saves with a 4.50 ERA and 1.80 WHIP over 10 innings. Seth Martinez was recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land in a corresponding move.
Aug 5 2024Pressly's $14 million option for 2025 vested during Friday's 3-2 win over the Rays, when he made his 45th appearance of the season, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Prior to the 2023 season, Pressly inked a two-year, $30 million extension that triggered a $14 million option if he appeared in 50 games in both the 2023 and 2024 seasons or if he appeared in 110 games between both seasons. Since he had already logged 65 appearances in 2023, Pressly was able to reach 110 with his scoreless inning Friday. The 35-year-old right-hander's strikeout rate continues to tumble downward from his peak years as Houston's closer, but he's remained dependable in his first season as a setup man for five-time All-Star Josh Hader. After a bumpy March and April, Pressly has settled in nicely and has provided a 0.51 ERA and 0.91 WHIP over his last 18 appearances while collecting 12 holds and a save during that stretch.
Jun 30 2024Pressly struck out one and allowed one hit in a scoreless eighth inning to earn a hold Saturday against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly struggled significantly to begin the season, but he's now turned in seven straight scoreless appearances. He's picked up five holds and a save while maintaining a 6:1 K:BB in that span. Even with that stretch, Pressly has a 4.40 ERA with a 1.43 WHIP overall on the campaign.
Jun 12 2024Pressly struck two in a perfect inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was called upon to close the game with Josh Hader unavailable after working the previous two days. The 35-year-old got Patrick Bailey to fly out before recording back-to-back punchouts to seal the deal. He now has two saves in the last week, though Tuesday's outing also comes on the heels of a blown save Sunday. Despite holding a 5.19 ERA on the year, it seems as though Pressly still has the advantage over Bryan Abreu for save opportunities when Hader is unavailable to pitch.
Jun 4 2024Pressly struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 8-5 win over the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was Pressly's first save of the season, to go with seven holds and four blown saves. Regular closer Josh Hader had pitched three of the last five days, including Monday, which likely led to the decision to give Pressly the ninth inning in Tuesday's win. Over his previous nine outings, Pressly had been tagged for six runs (five earned) over 8.2 innings. He's had a rough campaign with a 5.01 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 30:8 K:BB over 23.1 innings after Hader's offseason arrival bumped Pressly into a setup role through no fault of his own.
Jun 2 2024Pressly (0-3) allowed an earned run on one hit and one walk across one inning to take the loss Sunday against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly allowed a leadoff walk, which ultimately became the game-winning run for the Twins. He took his second loss in his last three appearances, and Pressly has allowed three earned runs in that span. Though he has had stretches of effectiveness this season, he now owns a 5.06 ERA and 1.59 WHIP across 21.1 innings.
May 21 2024Pressly threw a scoreless inning without allowing a baserunner and striking out one Monday against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was out for the team's weekend series with finger soreness, but he showed no ill effects in his return. He entered the game in the eighth inning with the Astros down three, presumably because the team wanted to get him some work after the layoff. Pressly has struggled a bit of late, allowing an earned run in half of his last four appearances. He has a 5.19 ERA on the season.
May 20 2024Astros manager Joe Espada said that Pressly (finger) will be available out of the bullpen Monday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly has been off limits for a few days while dealing with soreness in a finger on his right hand, but it seems he's fully recovered now. The veteran reliever has struggled this season, collecting a 5.51 ERA and 1.78 WHIP through 16.1 innings.
May 17 2024Manager Joe Espada said Pressly was unavailable for Friday's game against the Brewers due to a sore finger on his right (throwing) hand, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly's finger issue doesn't appear to be anything too serious, though it may prevent him from pitching for another day or two. The 35-year-old right-hander currently holds a 5.51 ERA and 1.78 WHIP through 16.1 innings and has not appeared in a game since Tuesday.
May 8 2024Astros manager Joe Espada said Wednesday that Pressly is managing lower-back soreness but that it's "nothing worrisome right now," Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 35-year-old hasn't pitched since Friday due to the injury, and it's unclear if he'll be available for Wednesday's matchup with the Yankees. Pressly was able to play catch, so it doesn't appear as though he's in danger of needing a trip to the injured list.
Apr 20 2024Pressly allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and no walks while striking out one across one inning to blow the save Saturday against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Josh Hader threw 30 pitches to convert a save Friday, likely leaving him unavailable Saturday. Pressly was called upon to protect a two-run lead in the ninth inning as a result, though he failed to do so through a combination of bad luck and poor pitching. The leadoff man reached base on catcher's interference, but Pressly then proceeded to surrender a double and single that resulted in two runs crossing the plate. Pressly had pitched fairly well recently, but he's now allowed at least one earned run in five of 10 games this season with an overall ERA of 8.31.
Apr 19 2024Pressly allowed one hit and struck out one across a scoreless inning to earn a hold Friday against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly had significant struggles to begin the season, allowing six earned runs across his first 2.2 innings of work. While his ratios are still affected, he's since allowed only one earned run across his last five frames while maintaining a 7:3 K:BB in that span. Josh Hader converted the save in Friday's win, though he has allowed at least one earned in five of his 11 appearances to this point.
Mar 29 2024Pressly (0-1) took the loss Thursday against the Yankees, allowing a run on two hits and a walk. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was tasked with preserving a 4-4 tie in the seventh inning against the middle of the Yankees order. The right-hander surrendered a lead-off double to Aaron Judge, who would come around to score on an Alex Verdugo sacrifice fly. It's a tough start to the year for the 35-year-old Pressly, who was already destined for a reduced role after Houston brought in Josh Hader to handle closing duties. Pressly converted 31 of 37 save chances last season, sporting a 3.58 ERA with 74:16 K:BB over 65.1 innings.
Feb 14 2024Astros manager Joe Espada confirmed Wednesday that Pressly will serve as a setup man when Josh Hader is available to close games, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: When the Astros announced Hader's signing to a five-year, $95 million deal in late January, general manager Dana Brown was initially evasive when asked to define the roles of the team's relievers, though the prevailing assumption was that Hader -- a five-time All-Star -- would take over as Houston's full-time closer. Espada put to rest any thought that the Astros might opt for a two-pronged approach to the ninth inning, despite Pressly's strong track record as Houston's primary closer for the past four seasons. Pressly had already begun to show signs of skills degradation in 2023 -- his 3.58 ERA, 3.61 xERA and 21.6 K-BB% last season were all his worst marks of his five full seasons in Houston -- but the 35-year-old still profiles as a reliable setup man in front of Hader and a capable fill-in closer on the occasions Hader isn't available. Even so, the lack of reliable save opportunities moving forward largely limits Pressly's fantasy appeal to deeper leagues or AL-only leagues.
Jan 20 2024Pressly is expected to serve in a setup role for the Astros following the signing of Josh Hader, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Joe Espada declined to name a closer when asked Saturday at the team's FanFest event. However, Rome writes of Espada that he "sounded like a manager who will eventually name a standalone closer," and that's fully expected to be Hader. The team spoke to Pressly before agreeing to terms with Hader and Pressly is "all in" on the move, per Espada. Pressly should still be rosterable in deep leagues even in a setup role, but clearly his fantasy stock is way down following the Hader move.
Sep 29 2023Pressly allowed an unearned run on one hit and struck out one over one inning to earn the save in Friday's 2-1 win over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly danced with danger after Alek Thomas reached on an error and Gabriel Moreno sent him home with an RBI double. Pressly was still able to get the job done, earning his first save since Sept. 9. The closer is up to 31 saves in 37 chances this season while logging a 3.58 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 74:16 K:BB through 65.1 innings overall.
Sep 21 2023Pressly (4-5) did not allow a baserunner across one inning to earn the win Wednesday against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly entered the game in the ninth inning with the score tied at 1-1 and needed only nine pitches to retire the side. It was an important outing given that Pressly has struggled of late, allowing five earned runs combined across his previous two appearances. Those struggles have extended further, as he's posted just a 5.41 ERA and 1.41 WHIP -- albeit with a 29:5 K:BB -- across 22.2 innings since the All-Star break. There's no indication that Pressly is in line to lose his job as the closer, but he has become a liability for the Astros as they make their push to the postseason.
Sep 19 2023Pressly (3-5) blew the save and took the loss Monday against the Orioles. He allowed three runs on three hits and a walk while striking out three over one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Tasked with protecting a two-run lead in the ninth, Pressly surrendered a pair of one-out singles before Cedric Mullins launched a three-run homer, sticking Pressly with his sixth blown save and the eventual loss. The right-hander's now given up five runs over his last two appearances after holding opponents scoreless in 11 of the previous 12 outings. Overall, Pressly has 30 saves on the year with a 3.84 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 71:13 K:BB across 61 innings.
Sep 14 2023Pressly allowed two earned runs on two hits and a walk while striking out one Wednesday against the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was called upon to pitch in the ninth inning with a six-run lead, as he had not taken the mound since Saturday. After retiring the first batter he faced, he allowed three straight batters to reach base, which ultimately accounted for the two earned runs surrendered. Pressly has a 5.23 ERA and 1.35 WHIP since the All-Star break while allowing at least one earned run in six of his 21 appearances, but there's no indication that his role as closer is in jeopardy.
Sep 9 2023Pressly earned a save against the Padres on Saturday, allowing a hit and issuing a walk while striking out three batters in one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly got the ball in the ninth inning with the Astros up two runs. The Padres sandwiched a walk and a single around a Fernando Tatis strikeout to put the tying run on base, but Pressly rebounded by striking out Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts to escape the danger. The veteran closer thus earned his 30th save of the season, marking the second time in his career that he's reached that mark. Pressly tallied a career-best 33 saves last season.
Aug 31 2023Pressly gave up a hit and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to record his 29th save of the season in a 7-4 win over the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It didn't look like the right-hander would be needed as Houston raced out to a 7-0 lead through four innings, but Pressly was ready when he got the call. The 34-year-old hadn't pitched in four days after blowing his last save chance, but with the Astros in a three-way dogfight for the AL West title, he may not be afforded too many more chances to rest down the stretch. In 17.2 innings since the All-Star break, Pressly's stumbled to a 5.09 ERA and 1.30 WHIP despite a 21:2 K:BB.
Aug 25 2023Pressly allowed four runs on four hits over two-thirds of an inning to take a blown save in Friday's 4-1 loss to the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly struck out the first two batters of the ninth inning as he looked to preserve a one-run lead. It wasn't meant to be, as he gave up three consecutive singles, the third one being a broken-bat single from Javier Baez which plated the tying run. Then came the nail in the coffin in the form of a Parker Meadows walk-off, three run home run. Pressly finished out July in a rut but had been unscored upon in his first seven appearances in August before this bump in the road.
Aug 15 2023Pressly picked up the save in Tuesday's 6-5 victory over the Marlins. He allowed one hit while striking out two in a scoreless inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly extended his scoreless inning streak to five as he improved to 28-for-32 in save chances this year. He's allowed just two hits over his last five appearances while striking out six in that span. Pressly lowered his ERA to 2.92 with a 0.92 WHIP and 56:10 K:BB across 52.1 innings this season.
Aug 8 2023Pressly (undisclosed) picked up the save in Tuesday's 7-6 win over Baltimore. He struck out one over a perfect inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After getting the day off Sunday, Pressly was back in action Tuesday and tossed a perfect inning for his 27th save of the campaign. After allowing one or more runs in four of his previous seven appearances, Pressly has rattled off four consecutive shutout frames. Despite the rest day, fantasy managers should expect Pressly to be fully healthy moving forward while he currently boasts the sixth-most saves in baseball and dons a 2.98 ERA through 51.1 innings of work.
Aug 6 2023Manager Dusty Baker said Pressly was unavailable for Sunday's win over the Yankees due to soreness, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Baker specified that Pressly is healthy, but the day off will provide some extra rest in conjunction with Monday's team off day. Bryan Abreu fired 1.1 scoreless frames to earn the save in Sunday's 9-7 victory. Pressly should be considered day-to-day heading into Tuesday's series opener in Baltimore.
Aug 2 2023Pressly picked up the save Wednesday against the Guardians, striking out two in a scoreless inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly now has saves in two of Houston's last three outings. He's delivered a pair of perfect innings after struggling to a 7.71 ERA in his previous seven innings. The 34-year-old right-hander is now 26-for-30 in save chances this season with a 3.10 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 53:9 K:BB across 49.1 innings.
Jul 31 2023Pressly earned a save against the Guardians on Monday, striking out one batter in a perfect inning of work. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Entering the ninth frame, it looked like Pressly's services might not be needed, as Houston held a comfortable 7-2 lead. However, Ryan Stanek allowed Cleveland to load the bases without recording an out, resulting in Pressly's entrance. The veteran closer quelled the threat, allowing an inherited runner to score on a sacrifice fly but otherwise shutting the Guardians down. Though Pressly's 3.17 ERA and 9.5 K/9 are slightly less impressive than what he's registered over the past several seasons, he continues to be among the game's best closers, recording 25 saves in 29 chances on the campaign.
Jul 28 2023Pressly (3-3) took the loss in Friday's 4-3 loss to the Rays. He allowed one run on two hits without a walk or a strikeout over one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Astros manager Dusty Baker turned to his closer in the ninth inning with the game tied 3-3, and Pressly proceeded to put the tying in scoring position right away on a Jose Siri double. Pressly couldn't strand him and was ultimately stuck with the loss. He's in a bit of a rough patch right now, but provided there is no injury behind his recent struggles, Pressly should remain the top endgamer in Houston.
Jul 25 2023Pressly recorded the save Tuesday against the Rangers after he allowed two runs on two hits during the ninth inning. He did not strike out or walk a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander took the mound in the ninth inning with a 4-1 advantage, and Mitch Garver attempted to spark a comeback with a two-run homer. It's the 24th save of the season in 28 tries for Pressly, though he's given up six runs (five earned) across his past six outings. The 34-year-old's status as Houston's closer should be safe given his 3.11 ERA for the year, but manager Dusty Baker could try to avoid using him for Wednesday's series finale since Pressly has pitched the past two days. If that's the case, Bryan Abreu or Hector Neris would likely be called upon in a save chance.
Jul 21 2023Pressly walked one and struck out one in a scoreless and hitless inning to earn the save in Friday's 6-4 win over the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly has put up a pair of scoreless outings to bounce back from giving up four runs (three earned) over his previous two innings. While he's been a little unsteady following the All-Star break, he's in little danger of losing his closer job. He's 23-for-27 in save chances with a 2.84 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 49:9 K:BB through 44.1 innings this season.
Jul 20 2023Pressly earned a save against the Athletics on Thursday, striking out one batter in a perfect inning of work. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly had struggled in his previous two outings coming into Thursday, allowing four runs (three earned) and six hits over two frames. He got back on track against Oakland, needing just 11 pitches to retire the side in order and collect his 22nd save. Pressly isn't immune to an occasional rough appearance, but he's been steady overall this season, posting a 2.91ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 48:8 K:BB over 43.1 innings as the Astros' unquestioned closer.
Jul 15 2023Pressly allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and struck out one over one inning to take a blown save in Saturday's 13-12 extra-inning loss to the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was tasked with protecting a three-run lead in the ninth inning but failed to get the job done. Shohei Ohtani hit a solo home run, and further traffic on the bases yielded two more runs before the Angels completed their comeback against Phil Maton a frame later. Prior to Saturday, Pressly had given up just one unearned runs while allowing no hits and four walks over his previous 12 innings. The closer had a shaky stretch in early June, so fantasy managers will have to hope Saturday's outing doesn't lead to extended troubles. Pressly has a 2.36 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 46:8 K:BB while going 21-for-25 in save chances over 41.1 innings this season.
Jul 8 2023Pressly walked one in a scoreless and hitless inning to earn the save in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was able to work around the free pass without trouble to log his sixth consecutive appearance with a save. He's allowed just one unearned run on four walks over his last 11 innings while picking up eight saves in that span. The Houston closer is at 20 saves this season with a 2.52 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 42:8 K:BB through 39.1 innings.
Jul 5 2023Pressly didn't allow a baserunner and struck out two across a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Wednesday against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was tasked with protecting a two-run lead and he needed only nine pitches to do so. He has now turned in nine consecutive scoreless appearances, racking up 11 strikeouts with three walks across 10 innings in that span. Pressly has 19 saves on the campaign, three of which have come in July.
Jul 3 2023Pressly picked up the save in Monday's 12-11 win over the Rangers, striking out one over a scoreless inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly has earned saves in back-to-back games while extending his scoreless streak to nine innings. The 34-year-old right-hander is now 18-for-21 in save chances with a 2.65 ERA, 0.86 ERA and 40:7 K:BB across 37.1 innings this season.
Jul 2 2023Pressly struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the save in Sunday's 5-3 win over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly had no trouble protecting a two-run lead. He's converted five saves and added a win since his blown save June 14 versus the Nationals. The right-hander is 17-for-20 in save chances with a 2.72 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 39:7 K:BB through 36.1 innings overall. Pressly continues to enjoy stability in the closer role for Houston.
Jun 30 2023Pressly struck out one batter in a perfect inning to earn a save over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly quickly rolled through the Rangers with 13 pitches in a perfect ninth inning. He's converted four straight saves and turned in seven straight hitless frames. On the year, his ERA is down to 2.80 with a 38:7 K:BB and 16 saves across 35.1 frames.
Jun 29 2023Pressly picked up the save Wednesday against the Cardinals, striking out two over a perfect inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly retired Paul Goldschmidt, Lars Nootbaar and Paul DeJong in order to record his 15th save of the season. The right-hander went just 2-for-5 in save chances from May 29-June 14, but he hasn't allowed an earned run over his last five appearances (six innings) and is a perfect 3-for-3 in save opportunities during that stretch. Overall, Pressly is 15-for-18 as a closer and sports elite numbers across the board (2.88 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 9.7 K/9).
Jun 25 2023Pressly (2-2) allowed one unearned run over two innings against the Dodgers on Sunday. He struck out one and earned a win. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly worked the ninth and 10th innings Sunday and yielded an unearned run in the latter frame despite not allowing a hit or walk in his appearance. He looked iffy early in the month, but he's given up just one run over his last eight innings, dropping his season ERA to 2.97. Pressly's converted 14 of his 17 save chances while going 2-2 with a 35:7 K:BB through 33.1 innings.
Jun 22 2023Pressly struck out two in a perfect ninth inning Wednesday to record his 14th save of the season in a 10-8 win over the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Both pitching staffs struggled in this one, combining for 16 walks, two hit-by-pitches and two wild pitches, but Pressly was unaffected by the general malaise. After a stretch in late May and June that saw the veteran reliever cough up runs in six of seven appearances, he's now kept the opposition off the board in three straight, leaving him with a 3.16 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 34:7 K:BB through 31.1 innings on the year.
Jun 20 2023Pressly earned his 13th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning in Tuesday's 4-2 win against the Mets. He struck out one, walked one and did not allow a hit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 33-year-old hasn't been reliable of late as he came into Tuesday with eight runs allowed (four earned) and three blown saves in his past eight outings, but he worked through the heart of New York's lineup with no major issues. Pressly is 13-for-16 in save chances this year and has a 3.26 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 32:7 K:BB in 30.1 innings.
Jun 15 2023Pressly (1-2) was charged with a blown save after he allowed three unearned runs on two hits and failed to strike out a batter in an inning of relief, but he picked up the win in Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly entered the game in the ninth inning with a three-run lead and blew his third save of the season -- all three of which have come in his last six appearances. The leadoff hitter reached base via an error, but Pressly went on to surrender a double and triple to allow the tying run to score. There's been no indication he will be moved out of the closer role, but Pressly has allowed at least one run in five of his last six outings.
Jun 10 2023Pressly earned a save over the Guardians on Saturday, allowing an unearned run on one hit while striking out one batter over one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly blew a save opportunity against Cleveland on Friday, but he got right back on his feet with a save one day later. The Astros gave him a three-run ninth-inning cushion to work with Saturday, but things got interesting when Steven Kwan opened with an infield single and the next batter reached base via an error. Pressly then got Jose Ramirez -- who homered four times over the previous two games -- to line out before retiring the final two batters to close out the contest. Pressly has struggled a bit of late with two blown saves and four runs (three earned) over his past five appearances, but he's 12-for-14 on save chances on the season and in no immediate danger of having his closer role challenged.
Jun 4 2023Pressly allowed one earned run on two hits while striking out two across one inning in Saturday's game against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly entered the game in the ninth inning with a four-run lead, allowing two singles and a wild pitch to surrender a run. He has allowed at least one earned run in three of his last 10 appearances, though he has only one blown save in that span and has maintained a 15:1 K:BB across 10 frames. Though he's had an inconsistent start to the season, Pressly comfortably remains the Astros' closer.
Jun 2 2023Pressly allowed one hit and struck out one batter over a scoreless inning Thursday to earn a save against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly blew his first save of the campaign against the Twins in his previous appearance, but he was able to get back on track. The veteran closer allowed a one-out double, though that didn't provide extensive stress given that he was protecting a three-run lead. Pressly has 11 saves in 12 chances since April 21, posting a 1.69 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 18:2 K:BB over 16 innings during that span.
May 29 2023Pressly blew a save against the Twins on Monday, allowing one run on two hits and one walk while striking out two batters in one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly got the ninth inning with Houston up 5-4 but couldn't protect the lead. He struck out two of the first three batters he faced but yielded a game-tying single to rookie Royce Lewis with two outs. The blown save was the first for Pressly in 11 chances this season, and Monday marked just the second time he's allowed the opponent to score over his past 17 outings. With those numbers in mind, Pressly's role as Houston's closer remains very secure despite the stumble.
May 28 2023Pressly struck out two in a perfect ninth inning Saturday to record his 10th save of the season in a 6-3 win over the A's. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 34-year-old righty continued a stellar run that has seen him hold the opposition scoreless in 15 of his last 16 appearances, a stretch in which Pressly has a 1.13 ERA, 0.69 WHIP and 16:1 K:BB through 16 innings. His ability to stay healthy for a full campaign remains a bit of a question mark, but he has yet to blow a save chance in 2023 and remains locked into the top spot in the Astros bullpen.
May 26 2023Pressly struck out three in a perfect inning to earn the save in Friday's 5-2 win over the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly hasn't given up a run over his last five innings, allowing just two hits while striking out seven in that span. The Astros' closer has converted all nine of his save chances this season. He's sporting a 3.10 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 20:2 K:BB over 20.1 innings, and he has one of the most secure closer roles in the majors.
May 20 2023Pressly earned a save against the Athletics on Saturday, allowing one hit and striking out one batter over a scoreless inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly allowed a one-out single but closed things out by fanning JJ Bleday with a runner on second base. The veteran closer has converted all eight of his save chances this season and has kept the opponent off the scoreboard in 13 of his past 14 appearances. He's had a few blow-ups that have led to a so-so 3.26 ERA, but his current 0.88 WHIP is a good indicator of his continued excellence.
May 15 2023Pressly secured the save during Wednesday's 4-3 win over the White Sox after pitching a perfect ninth inning while striking out a batter in the process. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly opened up his outing with a strikeout of Hanser Alberto and then got the next two batters to ground out. He remains a perfect 7-for-7 in save opportunities and already has four in May after he totaled just three in all of April. The 34-year-old now sits at a 3.63 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 16:2 K:BB over 17.1 innings.
May 13 2023Pressly struck out two batters in a perfect ninth inning during Friday's win over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Houston up 5-1, Pressly needed just 10 pitches to retire the White Sox in order. Though it was a non-save situation, it was an encouraging rebound after he nearly blew a save against the Angels on Wednesday. He lowered his season ERA to 3.86 with a 15:2 K:BB.
May 11 2023Pressly picked up the save during Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Angels, allowing two runs on four hits over one inning. He struck out one and did not walk a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly entered with a three-run lead, but he allowed four consecutive batters to reach to start the frame, including a two-run home run by Shohei Ohtani. However, the right-hander was able to settle down and retired three straight to end the inning, stranding the game-tying and go-ahead runs on base. Pressly is now 6-for-6 in save chances this season and remains Houston's top option in the ninth, but the Astros also trust Rafael Montero and Hector Neris in high-leverage, late-inning situations as well.
May 9 2023Pressly picked up the save in Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Angels. He struck out two in a perfect inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly struck out Shohei Ohtani and Anthony Rendon to open the ninth. The righty is perfect in his five save opportunities, but he is used almost exclusively in save situations. Pressly ranks sixth among Houston relievers in innings this season.
May 6 2023Pressly picked up the save in Friday's 6-4 victory over the Mariners. He allowed two hits over one scoreless inning. He did not strike out or walk a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly has now tossed scoreless outings in 12 of his last 13 appearances. The right-hander also sports an elite 0.83 WHIP, and he has yet to blow a save this year.
Apr 30 2023Pressly struck out one batter in a perfect inning to earn a save over Philadelphia on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly needed just 13 pitches (nine strikes) to close out the 4-3 win. He didn't pick up his first save until April 21 but now has three in his last four outings. The veteran righty has also turned in six straight scoreless outings, lowering his season ERA to 3.97 across 11.1 frames.
Apr 27 2023Pressly worked a perfect ninth inning Wednesday to record his second save of the season in a 1-0 win over the Rays. He didn't walk or strike out a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander fired eight of 10 pitches for strikes and showed no signs of injury or fatigue as he pitched on the second straight day for only the second time in 2023. The Astros have taken it easy on Pressly to begin the season and Bryan Abreu had collected the Astros' last two saves, but as long as he's healthy, Pressly should be the team's primary option in the ninth. The 34-year-old has a 4.35 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 8:2 K:BB through 10.1 innings.
Apr 5 2023Pressly (illness) tossed a scoreless frame Monday in the Astros' 7-6 loss to the Tigers in 11 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After taking the loss in relief on Opening Day last Thursday, Pressly wasn't available for any of the Astros' games against the White Sox this past weekend while he was feeling under the weather. Fortunately, Pressly seems to have quickly moved past the ailment, as he retired the side in 12 pitches during his appearance Monday.
Apr 1 2023Astros manager Dusty Baker told reporters Saturday that Pressly is unavailable due to illness, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was not available for Friday's or Saturday's game with Baker calling the Astros' closer "under the weather." The right-hander could be available for Sunday's series finale against the White Sox, but that's up in the air at the moment. Rafael Montero and Hector Neris have saved the last two games for Houston, and with Neris pitching 1.1 innings Saturday, it would seem to reason that Montero would get the ball in the ninth inning if necessary Sunday.
Mar 30 2023Pressly (0-1) took the loss in Thursday's 3-2 loss against the White Sox. He allowed two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out one over one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was called upon in the ninth inning with the score tied 1-1, and he was unable to keep Chicago off the board. After retiring Oscar Colas to begin the frame, Pressly allowed three straight hitters to reach base, with Andrew Vaughn's two-run double serving as the crushing blow. The Astros were able to fight back with one run in the bottom of the ninth but couldn't get Pressly off the hook for the loss. While this was certainly not the way the veteran closer envisioned his first outing of 2023 ending, he has plenty of job security and should get the first crack at a ninth-inning save opportunity whenever that arises.
Mar 17 2023Pressly is not in favor of the pitch clock that will be implemented in 2023, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly cited the fact that each pitcher is taught to work at their own pace to back his opinion, though he also didn't express concern about his ability to adjust to the new rule. He has most recently pitched in the World Baseball Classic, which does not use a pitch clock. Across three innings of Cactus League action, Pressly has allowed one earned run on five hits and a walk while striking out three across three frames.
Nov 5 2022Pressly pitched a scoreless ninth inning during Saturday's 4-1 win over the Phillies in Game 6 of the World Series, allowing one hit, striking out none and walking none. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly remained spotless for the postseason, finishing with a 0.00 ERA and just one unearned run allowed across 11 innings. He surrendered a one-out single to J.T. Realmuto, but was able to force two flyouts to secure the World Series victory. The 33-year-old ended his 2022 campaign with 18 consecutive saves -- his last blown save was July 30 against the Mariners. Pressly was extended through 2024 at the beginning of the season in what looks like a great decision for the Astros after the closer was dominant to finish the year.
Nov 3 2022Pressly pitched the final five outs and earned the save during Thursday's 3-2 win over the Phillies in Game 5 of the World Series, allowing zero hits, walks and runs while striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly threw a slider that hit Bryce Harper with two outs in the ninth, but he got Nick Castellanos to ground out to secure the save in Game 5. The closer converted his first save of the World Series, and he has now earned the save in 16 consecutive opportunities. After throwing 19 pitches the night prior in Game 4, Pressly needed another 26 to get the final five outs of Game 5. The 33-year-old Texan came into the game with the tying run on third and just one out, but he was able to record a strikeout and a ground out to escape the jam. Pressly is having an outstanding postseason for the Astros -- he has allowed just one unearned run over 10 innings while striking out 13.
Nov 2 2022Pressly pitched the final inning of Wednesday night's 5-0 win over the Phillies in Game 4 of the World Series, allowing zero runs, zero hits and one walk while striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly entered the game in the ninth inning with a chance to complete just the second no-hitter in World Series history, and he got the job done. The 33-year-old got J.T. Realmuto to ground out to third to end the game, evening up the series at 2-2. He has allowed just one unearned run in eight appearances during the postseason while amassing 11 strikeouts. Pressly threw 19 pitches Wednesday night, and he may be called on again Thursday night to close out Game 5 if the Astros can get to the ninth inning with a lead.
Oct 24 2022Pressly pitched the final inning Sunday during Game 4 of the ALCS, allowing zero hits, walks and strikeouts in the 6-5 win over the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After recording a fly out and a ground out in the ninth inning, Pressly was one out away from the World Series with Aaron Judge stepping to the plate. The 33-year-old was able to locate a slider on the outside corner and Judge tapped it back to the mound for a 1-3 ground out, sending the Astros to the World Series. This marked Pressly's third save of the ALCS and his 15th consecutive save converted, and he has allowed only two hits across five scoreless appearances in the postseason. The veteran will face the Phillies in the World Series -- he recorded his final save of the regular season against Philadelphia on October 5.
Oct 20 2022Pressly pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save during Game 2 of the ALCS, allowing zero hits and one walk while striking out three in the 3-2 win over the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly got his second save in two nights by striking out the side in the ninth inning Thursday. The 33-year-old closer was able to strike out Matt Carpenter after a two-out walk to Josh Donaldson, ending the comeback hopes for the Yankees and extending the ALCS lead to 2-0. Pressly has now converted his last 15 save opportunities, and he is 3-for-3 in the 2022 postseason. The 11-year veteran has been a closer for only the last three seasons, but he is cementing himself as one of the most dominant closers in the MLB.
Oct 19 2022Pressly earned the save during Game 1 of the ALCS, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing zero hits and zero walks while striking out two in the 4-2 win over the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly entered the game in the eighth inning and struck out Matt Carpenter to get the Astros out of a jam. In the ninth, he needed only 10 pitches to close out Harrison Bader, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Jose Trevino. Facing the bottom of the Yankees' order, the 33-year-old Texan delivered 10 straight pitches in the strike zone, showing a clear effort to be aggressive. This marked Pressly's second save in the postseason and his 35th of the year in 39 opportunities. Pressly's reliability toward the end of the season has been impressive -- he has converted 14 consecutive save opportunities.
Oct 5 2022Pressly picked up the save against the Phillies on Wednesday, striking out two over one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly relieved Rafael Montero to start the ninth inning and went 1-2-3 through the Phillies lineup to complete the save. The Houston closer finished the game with back-to-back swinging strikeouts of Alec Bohm and Matt Vierling, though it did take him 16 pitches to get through inning. Pressly finishes the regular season having converted his last 12 save opportunities, with his last blown save coming back on July 30. He has 29 strikeouts to only four walks over that stretch.
Oct 1 2022Pressly allowed a run on a hit and two walks while striking out two over one inning to earn the save in Saturday's 2-1 win over the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly allowed an RBI single to Yandy Diaz in the ninth inning, but he retired pinch hitter Harold Ramirez on a lineout to end the Rays' threat. Since returning from a neck injury Sept. 9, Pressly has given up three runs in 9.2 innings while converting all seven of his save chances in that span. He has 32 saves in 36 tries this year while maintaining a 3.04 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 63:13 K:BB across 47.1 innings.
Sep 25 2022Pressly picked up the save Saturday against the Orioles. He allowed one run on one hit while striking out one over one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly entered the game tasked with protecting a two-run lead and immediately gave up a solo home run to Rougned Odor on a 1-0 pitch to lead off the inning. Fortunately, the Astros closer was able to retire the next three batters he faced to to seal up an 11-10 victory after an eventful night at Camden Yards. Pressly has converted his last 10 save attempts dating back to Aug 9.
Sep 21 2022Pressly got the save after he pitched one inning, allowing a walk while striking out a batter in Wednesday's 5-2 win over the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly entered the game in the bottom of the ninth, making quick work of the first two batters he faced before walking Jose Siri with two outs. The right-hander was able to get Taylor Walls to ground out to end the contest, earning his 30th save of the season. The 33-year-old has now converted nine consecutive save chances, producing a 2.38 ERA and 0.62 WHIP with 19 strikeouts over 11.1 innings in his last 12 appearances.
Sep 20 2022Pressly earned the save Tuesday in Tampa Bay, striking out one in two-thirds of an inning in a 5-0 victory. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly entered the game in the ninth inning with the bases loaded and one out and eliminated the threat with a strikeout and line out. It was his 29th save of the season and the eighth consecutive save chance he's converted. Since returning from the injured list Sept. 9, he's recorded four saves and allowed one run and struck out nine in 4.2 innings across five appearances.
Sep 14 2022Pressly allowed a hit and struck out two across a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Wednesday against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly worked around a two-out single to protect a one-run lead and earned his 28th save of the season. He's been a bit rocky of late, allowing at least one earned run in two of his last four appearances. However, Pressly has pitched a clean frame in each of his last two outings, while also maintaining a 3.10 ERA with a 53:9 K:BB across 40.2 frames on the campaign.
Sep 13 2022Pressly earned the save Tuesday in Detroit, striking out the side in the ninth inning of a 6-3 victory. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Facing the middle third of Detroit's lineup, Pressly needed 13 pitches to record three strikeouts. It was his 27th save of the season and second since returning from a stint on the injured list with a neck issue. Over his last 20 outings he's struck out 50 percent of the batters he's faced and compiled a 2.18 ERA, 0.48 WHIP and 36:5 K:BB in 20.2 innings.
Sep 10 2022Pressly gave up a solo home run but struck out two over one inning of work to earn the save in a 4-3 victory over the Angels on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly made his first appearance since being reactivated from the 15-day injured list with a neck strain. He gave up a solo shot to Taylor Ward to make it a one-run game but he struck out the next two batters to close it out for his 26th save of the season. As long as Pressly's neck issues do not flare up again, he should continue to operate as Houston's closer down the stretch.
Sep 9 2022Pressly (neck) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Dusty Baker said Tuesday that Pressly was still bothered by his neck issue, but the right-hander will ultimately be cleared to return ahead of Friday's series opener against the Angels. Pressly didn't require a rehab assignment prior to his activation, and he should reclaim his role as the Astros' primary closer while Rafael Montero shifts into a setup role.
Sep 6 2022Pressly (neck) still doesn't feel right, according to manager Dusty Baker, but he hasn't been shut down, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He was previously expected to be activated from the injured list Tuesday, and it sounds like Pressly is now day-to-day with lingering neck discomfort. In the meantime, Rafael Montero should continue to work the ninth inning while Hector Neris handles the eighth.
Sep 3 2022Pressly (neck) threw a 26-pitch bullpen session Saturday and is on track to return when first eligible Tuesday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly is out due to neck spasms, but that may be partially due to the fact that the Astros can afford to be extra cautious due to their comfortable lead atop the American League standings. Unless something goes wrong in the next two days, the veteran closer will be able to return as soon as possible and will not require a rehab assignment.
Aug 25 2022Pressly was placed on the 15-day injured list due to neck spasms Thursday, retroactive to Aug. 22, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was unavailable over the last two days due to neck stiffness, and the issue will ultimately force him to miss at least two weeks. Bryan Abreu earned a one-out save Tuesday, but Rafael Montero will likely be the top candidate to handle closing duties until Pressly is cleared to return.
Aug 24 2022Houston manager Dusty Baker said Pressly (neck) isn't expected to be available for Wednesday's game against Minnesota, Julia Morales of AT&T SportsNet Southwest reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 33-year-old was unavailable for Tuesday's save opportunity due to neck stiffness and won't be an option for Baker again Wednesday. Pressly dealt with a similar neck issue earlier in August but was able to return to action within a few days. Rafael Montero is the likely candidate to step in for any potential save chances, though it was Bryan Abreu who locked down a one-out save Tuesday.
Aug 23 2022Pressly was unavailable during Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Twins due to neck stiffness, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was unavailable for a few days earlier in August with neck stiffness, and the issue has apparently resurfaced over the past couple days. The veteran right-hander last pitched Sunday against Atlanta, and he allowed two runs while picking up his 25th save of the year. It's unclear if he'll be available for Wednesday's matchup with Minnesota, and he should be considered day-to-day. Bryan Abreu secured a one-out save Tuesday, but Rafael Montero is the primary candidate for any save chances while Pressly is banged up.
Aug 21 2022Pressly allowed two runs on two hits in one inning against Atlanta on Sunday. He struck out one and earned a save. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sunday was the first time Pressly's been scored this month; he coughed up an RBI triple to Travis d'Arnaud and a run-scoring groundout to Vaughn Grissom before escaping with his 25th save. Pressly's ERA climbed to 3.11 with a 46:9 K:BB through 39 appearances. He's converted 25 of 29 saves on the year.
Aug 17 2022Pressly earned a save against the White Sox on Wednesday, striking out two batters in a perfect inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Houston held a 3-2 lead after four innings, and the score hadn't changed by the time Pressly took the mound in the bottom of the ninth. The closer kept things that way, punching out the final two batters he faced to complete a perfect inning. Pressly has bounced back from a blown save against Seattle on July 31 to convert each of his subsequent two opportunities, tossing 3.2 scoreless frames and posting a 7:0 K:BB across his past four appearances.
Aug 15 2022Pressly (neck) picked up the save in Sunday's 6-3 victory over the Athletics, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out none and walking none over two-thirds of an inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly needed just six pitches to get the save, his 23rd of the season. He is 2-for-2 in chances this month. The righty has not allowed an earned run in his last four appearances, and has allowed just two earned runs in his last 12.2 innings pitched. His ERA now sits at 2.86 to go along with 43 strikeouts and a 0.95 WHIP.
Aug 13 2022Pressly wasn't available to pitch Friday against Oakland due to a stiff neck, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly struck out five in two scoreless innings over two relief appearances Tuesday and Wednesday, but he's now dealing with a neck injury. It's not yet clear whether he'll be available for Saturday's matchup, but Hector Neris picked up the save in Pressly's absence Friday, and the team also has Rafael Montero and Will Smith available to fill in as closing options if needed.
Aug 9 2022Pressly picked up the save Tuesday, striking out two and allowing a hit in the ninth inning of a 7-5 victory over Texas. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After giving up a leadoff double, Pressly retired the next three batters to end the game. It was his 22nd save in 26 chances this season and his first appearance since July 31. He has a 1.29 ERA, 0.43 WHIP and 25:1 K:BB in 14 innings over his last 13 outings. He's nearing his career-high 26 saves recorded last season.
Jul 31 2022Pressly (3-3) gave up two earned runs on two hits and a walk while striking out two over one inning of work to take the loss in a 5-4 defeat to the Mariners on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly had been very good in July, tallying two wins and two saves while posting an ERA of 2.00 coming into Saturday's game. However, he wasn't able to protect a one-run lead over the Mariners and gave up the game-winning hit on a two-out, two-RBI single to Abraham Toro. Despite being saddled with his third loss of the season, Pressly should get a chance to redeem himself shortly.
Jul 29 2022Pressly earned a save against the Mariners on Thursday, allowing one hit and striking out two batters in a scoreless inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly allowed a two-out single before striking out Cal Raleigh to preserve the 4-2 win. He fanned multiple batters for the sixth time in his past eight contests, which is particularly notable since he accomplished that feat only twice through his first 19 outings of the campaign. Pressly hasn't allowed a run in any of his past 10 appearances, and he has yielded only one hit while posting a 19:0 K:BB and picking up two wins along with seven saves over 11 innings during that span.
Jul 24 2022Pressly pitched a perfect inning to earn the save in Sunday's 8-5 win over the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was on the paternity list for the last three days to be with his family after the birth of his daughter. He immediately retook the closer role and locked down his 20th save of the season with a drama-free outing Sunday. Even more impressively, Pressly has now pitched 10 consecutive innings without allowing a baserunner, and he's struck out 17 while picking up six saves and two wins in that span. The closer's dominant run has shrunk his ERA to 2.79 with a 0.90 WHIP and 32:8 K:BB across 29 innings this year.
Jul 21 2022The Astros placed Pressly on the paternity list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly has struck out 17 in nine scoreless innings over his last eight appearances, but he'll spend some time away from the team following the birth of his daughter. Rafael Montero, Hector Neris and Ryne Stanek are candidates for closing duties over the next few days, while Parker Mushinski (elbow) will be activated to provide an additional arm in the bullpen.
Jul 14 2022Pressly (3-2) threw two scoreless innings and struck out three to earn the win in Thursday's extra-inning victory over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly kept the game tied at 2-2 in the ninth inning and then protected a one-run lead in the 10th. A passed ball in the extra frame put the tying run 90 feet from scoring, but Pressly was able to get the job done. He's thrown eight innings without permitting a baserunner (outside of extra-inning ghost runners) in his last seven appearances. The Astros' closer trimmed his ERA to 3.00 with a 0.96 WHIP and 29:8 K:BB across 27 innings this year. He's 19-for-22 in save chances and continues to have a strong grip on ninth-inning duties.
Jul 12 2022Pressly struck out two in a perfect inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 6-5 win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kyle Tucker's RBI double in the ninth inning gave the Astros a one-run lead, and Pressly was able to make it stand. He threw nine of his 15 pitches for strikes. The right-hander has tossed six straight perfect innings in his last six appearances, earning five saves and a win in that span. He now owns a 3.24 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 26:8 K:BB through 25 innings overall while going 19-for-22 in save chances.
Jul 8 2022Pressly picked up the save Thursday against the Royals. He allowed allowed zero baserunners while striking out one over one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly came on in the ninth with a three-run lead and retired Nicky Lopez, Ryan O'Hearn and Whit Merrifield in order to secure his 18th save. The veteran closer sports a 3.38 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP with a 24:8 K:BB across 24.0 innings this season.
Jul 3 2022Pressly earned the win during Sunday's 4-2 victory against the Angels, striking out the side in a perfect ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly pitched the top of the ninth in a 2-2 tie and retired all three Angels via strikeout, then became the victor when Houston walked it off in the bottom of the inning. The 33-year-old has spun four straight perfect appearances with eight total strikeouts in four innings following a disastrous outing against the Yankees on June 23. He's converted 14 of his 15 save chances since May 7.
Jun 30 2022Pressly struck out two and did not allow a baserunner in the ninth inning to record his 17th save of the season Thursday against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly successfully protected a one-run lead to earn his 17th save of the season. Since blowing an opportunity against the Yankees on June 23, Pressly has not allowed a baserunner across three innings -- and three appearances -- while recording five strikeouts. On the season, Pressly has a 3.68 ERA and a 20:8 K:BB across 22 frames.
Jun 29 2022Pressly struck out one without allowing a baserunner in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Wednesday against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly successfully protected a two-run lead to record his 16th save of the season. He's rebounded well since allowing four earned runs and blowing a save against the Yankees on Thursday, turning in consecutive scoreless appearances. While Pressly still has a hold on the closer role in Houston, he has maintained only an 18:8 K:BB with a 3.86 ERA across 21 innings on the campaign.
Jun 25 2022Pressly tossed a perfect ninth inning while striking out two batters on his way to a save in Saturday's 3-0 win over the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was called upon to finish a combined no-hitter and protect a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the ninth, successfully finishing the no-hitter while securing the save. He struck out two batters and rebounded well from the four-run blowup he had Thursday. The save was his 15th of the year and he now owns a 4.05 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with 17 strikeouts over 20 innings in 22 appearances.
Jun 23 2022Pressly (1-2) allowed four runs on three hits and two walks in one-third of an inning, taking the loss and a blown save in Thursday's 7-6 loss to the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly walked the first two batters he faced, then served up a game-tying three-run home to Aaron Hicks. It didn't get better from there, as Pressly allowed two more singles, though Isiah Kiner-Falefa was caught stealing. Ryne Stanek fared no better, allowing a walkoff single from Aaron Judge, with the run going down as the fourth on Pressly's line. This poor outing ended a five-inning scoreless streak for the Astros' closer, who saw his ERA rise to 4.26 with a 1.37 WHIP and 15:8 K:BB through 19 innings overall. He's 14-for-17 in save chances, though he's likely built up enough trust to maintain the role after what's for now an isolated bad outing.
Jun 22 2022Pressly didn't allow a baserunner and had two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly threw 10 of his 14 pitches for strikes as he retired the Mets in order with minimal difficulty. The right-hander allowed runs in his first two appearances of June but has given up only two hits across his past four outings. Overall this year he has a 2.41 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 15:6 K:BB over 18.2 innings while going 14-for-16 in save chances.
Jun 19 2022Pressly walked one and struck out one in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Sunday's 4-3 win over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hector Neris allowed the White Sox to get within a run in the eighth inning, but Pressly was able to close the door in the ninth for his 13th save in 15 chances. This was Pressly's fourth straight scoreless outing after he allowed runs in each of his first two appearances in June. The 33-year-old has a 2.55 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 13:6 K:BB through 17.2 innings overall.
Jun 15 2022Pressly pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his 12th save of the season in a 4-3 win over the Rangers on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Astros closer gave up a couple of hits but managed to induce soft contact with runners on to get out of the inning unscathed. Pressly now has 12 saves on the year, a number which ties him for eighth overall. When healthy, Pressly has impressed in the closer role. He has converted nine straight save opportunities dating back to May 7.
Jun 7 2022Pressly earned the save Tuesday after tossing a perfect ninth inning and striking out two in the 4-1 win over the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was asked to protect a 4-1 lead in top of the ninth, making quick work of the Mariners while recording two strikeouts in a perfect frame. The save was his 11th of the year and he has now converted eight straight opportunities. Pressly now owns a 3.07 ERA and 1.23 WHIP with 12 strikeouts over 14.2 innings in 16 appearances this season.
Jun 5 2022Pressly was ejected from Sunday's game against the Royals in the bottom of the ninth inning for throwing inside to Michael Taylor, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was warned for throwing inside before he was ultimately thrown out of the game with two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. If the league ultimately determines that he was intentionally throwing inside, Pressly could face a suspension. Prior to Sunday's ejection, the right-hander allowed a run on no hits and a walk while failing to strike out a batter in two-thirds of an inning.
Jun 2 2022Pressly gave up a run on two hits while striking out one in the ninth inning Wednesday to record his 10th save of the season in a 5-4 win over the A's. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander made things interesting after serving up an RBI double to Elvis Andrus, but Pressly was able to escape with no further damage. He hadn't been charged with an earned run in eight straight appearances heading into Wednesday, and Pressly will take a 2.77 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 10:4 K:BB through 13 innings into his next outing.
May 31 2022Pressly allowed a hit in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly allowed a leadoff single to Tony Kemp, but then got Jed Lowrie to fly out before ending the inning on a Ramon Laureano double play. This was Pressly's fifth straight appearance that ended with a save, and he's logged a 7.2-inning scoreless streak. For the season, the Astros' closer is 9-for-11 in save chances with a 2.25 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 9:4 K:BB across 12 innings.
May 29 2022Pressly allowed a hit and two walks while striking out one in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly loaded the bases with one out, but he got Luis Torrens to ground into a double play to end the threat. This was Pressly's fourth straight appearance with a save over the last eight days, and he's riding a 6.2-inning scoreless streak. The Astros' closer is at a 2.45 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 9:4 K:BB across 11 innings while going 8-for-10 in save chances in 12 outings.
May 25 2022Pressly earned a save against the Guardians on Wednesday, pitching a perfect inning during which he struck out one batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly came on in the ninth inning to protect a one-run lead and had a relatively easy time closing things out, retiring the side on nine pitches and preventing any balls from leaving the infield. He has converted his last four save chances and hasn't given up a run across six outings since being tagged with back-to-back blown saves April 13 and May 5.
May 22 2022Pressly notched the save during Sunday's 5-2 victory against the Rangers, allowing two hits in two-thirds of an inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly entered with two on and one out in a four-run game and served up singles to the first two Rangers but was able to induce a Jonah Heim double play to end the game with the bases loaded. The 33-year-old recorded his sixth save in 10 appearances, though his strikeout rate is down to 20.6 percent after sitting above 30 percent in each of his past four seasons.
May 21 2022Pressly registered the save during a 2-1 win against the Rangers on Saturday, allowing one hit with one strikeout in the ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly got two quick outs in the ninth and recorded a strikeout to end the game after permitting a Nathaniel Lowe single. Opportunities have been difficult to come by for the 33-year-old as this was his first save and only third appearance since May 7. Pressly has lowered his ERA to 3.24 with four scoreless innings since blowing two straight save opportunities.
May 19 2022Pressly struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth inning of Thursday's win over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was set to enter in a save situation, but the Astros scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Even so, he was impressive while striking out the side on just 14 pitches. Pressly has made four appearances since coming off the injured list, with his last three being scoreless. Overall, he has a 3.68 ERA with a 6:2 K:BB across 7.1 frames.
May 14 2022Pressly allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth inning Friday against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly pitched in his familiar ninth-inning role, though it wasn't in a save situation. Even so, it was positive to see him turn in a scoreless effort, his second in three appearances since he was activated from the injured list. Pressly has maintained the closer role in Houston to this point, though he'll need to be effective as Rafael Montero has pitched very well to begin the campaign.
May 8 2022Pressly struck out one and did not allow a baserunner in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Saturday against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly made his second appearance since returning from the injured list and bounced back from a blown save in his first outing. He retired Tucker Barnhart, Derek Hill and Javier Baez on only eight pitches. He now has four saves in six opportunities this season, but he has only three strikeouts across 5.1 innings of work. Despite a bumpy start to the campaign, it appears that manager Dusty Baker remains comfortable with turning to Pressly in the ninth inning.
May 6 2022Pressly (rest) is unavailable out of the Astros' bullpen Friday against the Tigers, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This is a fairly fluid situation in the ninth inning, so it's worth noting that while Rafael Montero may get the save chance, Pressly was not considered a viable option after throwing 21 pitches in his first game off the injured list Thursday. Granted, that was a blown save, so Pressly's role is still up in the air going forward.
May 5 2022Pressly (1-1) picked up the win despite blowing a save after allowing two runs on two hits in the ninth inning of a 3-2 victory Thursday over Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In his first game since April 13, Pressly (knee) entered the game with the Astros leading 2-0 and retired the first two batters he faced. After giving up a single to Miguel Cabrera, Jeimer Candelario sent a 1-2 pitch to the seats beyond the right-field wall to tie the game. The righty is now 3-for-5 in save opportunities and has just two strikeouts in 4.1 innings. That said, since joining the Astros in 2018, the two-time All-Star has a 2.32 ERA in 167 innings with 216 strikeouts and will likely be given the majority of the opportunities to close moving forward.
May 4 2022Pressly (knee) tossed a perfect inning out of the bullpen in his relief appearance for Triple-A Sugar Land on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle, Pressly threw well during the outing and sported a fastball that hovered around 93-to-94 miles per hour, but because he only needed six pitches to retire the side, the sample might not have been big enough to convince the Astros he's back to optimal health. The right-hander played catch Wednesday at Minute Maid Park, so the Astros will presumably check back in with him Thursday before determining whether to send him back to Sugar Land for another rehab appearance or to activate him from the 10-day injured list in advance of their series opener with the Tigers.
May 2 2022Pressly (knee) will make a rehab appearance for Triple A Sugar Land on Tuesday, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly hasn't pitched since April 13 while dealing with right knee inflammation. The Astros didn't specify whether he'd need one or multiple rehab outings, so the answer may depend on how his appearance goes Tuesday. A return during this weekend's four-game series against the Tigers seems possible, though it's also conceivable he doesn't return until next week if he needs to pitch two or three times in the minors.
May 1 2022Pressly (knee) completed a bullpen session Saturday but remains without a clear timeline for a return from the 10-day injured list, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly hasn't been shut down from throwing at any point since landing on the IL on April 16, but the 33-year-old appears to have seemingly plateaued in his recovery program. Manager Dusty Baker has been vague about the closer's progress to date, and at this stage, fantasy managers shouldn't bank on Pressly returning during the Astros' upcoming seven-game week. Since he's already missed more than two weeks of action, Pressly may need to make at least one minor-league rehab appearance before Houston feels comfortable activating him.
Apr 24 2022Astros manager Dusty Baker said Pressly (knee) showed impressive velocity and location of his pitchers while throwing a live batting practice session Sunday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Houston training staff will likely check back with Pressly on Monday to see how he feels 24 hours after the throwing session, but if the right-hander reports no setbacks with his right knee, he could be activated from the 10-day injured list by Tuesday. Once activated, Pressly is expected to immediately step back in as Houston's closer.
Apr 23 2022Pressly (knee) will not be activated from the injured list Sunday, the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly is eligible to be activated Sunday, but he is not ready to get back on the field just yet, and his absence will be extended until at least sometime next week.
Apr 20 2022Pressly (knee) was throwing in the bullpen prior to Houston's game Wednesday against the Angels, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was placed on the injured list April 16, though the move was retroactive to April 14. He has since had fluid drained from his right knee, but he is apparently feeling well enough to resume throwing. Though no firm timetable has been set, Houston has kept open the possibility that Pressly could be activated after being sidelined the minimum 10 days.
Apr 18 2022Pressly believes that his dip in velocity may have been caused by the knee injury that landed him on the injured list April 16, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was averaging just 92.8 mph on his fastball prior to being placed on the injured list, nearly three ticks off his pace from the 2021 season. He was still largely effective with the decreased velocity, as he successfully converted three of his four save chances. However, with Hector Neris and Rafael Montero pitching well in high-leverage roles out of the Astros' bullpen, Pressly will need to remain effective to maintain his status as the team's closer.
Apr 16 2022Pressly was placed on the 10-day injured list with right knee inflammation Friday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly blew the save and took the loss Wednesday in Arizona when he allowed two runs (one earned) on a hit and two walks in one-third of an inning. It's possible that the injury contributed to his struggles, and the right-hander will have at least a week and a half to recover. In spite of Wednesday's rough outing, Pressly should reclaim closing duties upon his return. Hector Neris and Ryne Stanek are candidates for ninth-inning duties while Pressly is sidelined.
Apr 13 2022Pressly (0-1) gave up two runs (one earned) on a hit and two walks in 0.1 innings in a 3-2 loss Wednesday in Arizona. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly entered in the 10th with the Astros leading 2-1. The automatic runner was sacrificed to third and then driven in on a single by Seth Beer. Following two walks, Ketel Marte walked it off with a sacrifice fly that was misplayed by leftfielder Chas McCormick, preventing any chance of a play at the plate. Pressly had been a perfect 3-for-3 in save chances to start the season.
Apr 12 2022Pressly saved a 2-1 triumph over Arizona on Tuesday, allowing one hit with one strikeout in a scoreless ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was able to work around a leadoff single to deliver his league-lead tying third save in three appearances. He's been efficient with no more than 11 pitches thrown in any outing, though the 33-year-old has recorded only two strikeouts thus far.
Apr 10 2022Pressly picked up the save in Sunday's 4-1 victory over the Angels, striking out one in a clean ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly struck out Jo Adell on five pitches before retiring the next two Angels on consecutive pitches for an easy save. If he stays healthy, the 33-year-old is well on his way to surpassing a career-high 26 saves from 2021 as the clear-cut best option for saves on a Houston team with high expectations.
Apr 8 2022Pressly allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth inning to record the save Thursday against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly didn't have to wait long for his first save opportunity of the season, and he made quick work of the Angels. He allowed a leadoff single to Mike Trout, but then retired the next batter before a double play ended the game. Pressly continued to experience declined fastball velocity, topping out at 92.6 mph with his fastball, though it didn't harm his effectiveness in this outing.
Apr 5 2022Pressly agreed to a two-year, $30 million contract extension with the Astros on Tuesday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly is under contract for 2022 after his $10 million option vested in September, and he's now reached a new deal with the Astros for at least two more years. The extension also includes a $14 million option for a third year, which includes a $2 million buyout that will vest if he makes at least 50 appearances in both 2023 and 2024, per Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle. The 33-year-old has been dominant since being acquired from Minnesota in 2018 and has a 2.21 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 214:35 K:BB over 162.2 innings for Houston. Pressly went 26-for-28 in save opportunities during 2021 and will work as the Astros' closer again this year.
Nov 3 2021Pressly will remain under contract with the Astros through 2022 after his $10 million team option vested in September, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Per the terms of the extension Pressly inked with the Astros in March 2019, his option for 2022 vested with a prorated 60 appearances in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and with 60 appearances in 2021. After narrowly reaching the benchmark in 2020 with 23 appearances (he needed 22), Pressly made his 60th appearance of 2021 with about a week and a half remaining in the season. Even at an eight-figure salary for 2022, Pressly still looks like a bargain for Houston, as he's been one of baseball's top bullpen arms over the past four years. His 4.7 WAR since his July 27, 2018 acquisition from the Twins trails only Liam Hendriks (7.9) and Josh Hader (5.1) among all qualified relievers during that stretch.
Oct 16 2021Pressly allowed one run on a hit in one inning to earn the save in Friday's win over the Red Sox in Game 1 of the ALCS. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly earned 26 saves during the regular season but didn't have any save chances during the ALDS against the White Sox. The right-hander has made four appearances since the start of the playoffs and has recorded a 2.25 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in four innings.
Sep 30 2021Pressly secured the save in Thursday's win over Tampa Bay, walking one in a scoreless ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was the 26th save of the season and seventh in a row for Pressly, who hadn't pitched since Sunday while working through a knee issue. He needed 17 pitches to finish off the Rays, only eight of which were strikes, but it was good enough for his seventh scoreless effort in his last eight appearances.
Sep 29 2021Manager Dusty Baker said Pressly (knee) would have been available for a potential save situation during Wednesday's 7-0 loss to the Rays, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Baker announced Tuesday that Pressly was unavailable for that contest due to an old knee issue that cropped up, though it's apparently not a serious concern since the right-hander was available a day later. The 31-year-old hasn't pitched since Sunday, and the Astros are likely to utilize him at least once during the final four games of the season to keep him fresh heading into the playoffs, regardless of whether or not a save opportunity arises.
Sep 28 2021Manager Dusty Baker said Pressly was unavailable for Tuesday's win over the Rays due to a knee injury "that's bothered him in the past," Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in August 2019 and was ailed by the knee throughout those playoffs, and it appears he's now dealing with another issue in the same knee. The severity of the injury this time around remains unclear, but it's certainly a concerning development with the playoffs on the horizon. Kendall Graveman was placed on the paternity list Tuesday, which likely leaves Ryne Stanek as the favorite to pitch in potential save opportunities for the next couple days if Pressley remains unavailable.
Sep 26 2021Pressly (5-3) took the loss Saturday as the Astros were downed 2-1 by the A's, giving up a run on two hits in one-third of an inning. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Entering the game in the bottom of the ninth, Pressly gave up a leadoff single to Elvis Andrus before Starling Marte laced a walkoff double. Houston's closer is stumbling to the finish line this season, allowing runs in three of nine September appearances for a 5.63 ERA, but his 12:2 K:BB through eight innings on the month suggests there's little cause for concern.
Sep 20 2021Pressly pitched a scoreless save and earned the save Sunday against Arizona, striking out the three batters he faced. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly appeared in three games in a row over the weekend series against the Diamondbacks and now has posted four straight scoreless appearances, but he was particularly dominant in the series finale after striking out the side while tossing nine of his 12 pitches for strikes. Pressly has gone 25-for-27 in save chances this year and owns a career-best 2.23 ERA across 59 appearances.
Sep 19 2021Pressly allowed one hit and struck out one over a scoreless ninth inning in Saturday's 6-4 extra-inning loss to the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly has appeared in the first two games of the series, each time pitching the ninth in a non-save situation, and has thrown a combined 34 pitches. If a save situation arises Sunday, manager Dusty Baker could hold Pressly back from a third consecutive day of usage. If that is the case, Kendall Graveman is the most likely reliever to be used as a closer.
Sep 13 2021Pressly picked up the save Sunday against the Angels after tossing a scoreless inning, striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was coming off a woeful outing against the Mariners, allowing three runs in just two-thirds of an inning, but he bounced back here to pick up his 24th save of the campaign. The veteran reliever has gone 24-for-26 in save chances this year and owns a 2.34 ERA across 56 appearances. To note, he has posted an ERA below the 2.55 mark in three of his last four campaigns.
Sep 8 2021Pressly (5-2) allowed three runs on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning, taking the loss Wednesday versus Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 32-year-old was called upon to pitch the ninth inning of a tied game, but he was removed after allowing a two-run single to Jose Marmolejos. Pressly was charged with an additional run when Blake Taylor yielded a home run to J.P. Crawford. Pressly has recently dealt with arm soreness, and he's now allowed four runs across his last 1.2 innings. He still owns a 2.38 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 71:12 K:BB across 56.2 innings, but he may need some additional rest in the near term. Kendall Graveman or Yimi Garcia could be candidates to receive save chances if Pressly is deemed unavailable at some point.
Sep 7 2021Houston manager Dusty Baker said Pressly was unavailable to pitch Sunday due to a sore arm. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Astros finished out a series in San Diego on Sunday and didn't need Pressly that day, nor was he needed in Seattle on Monday. It's unclear the extent of the soreness or how much time Pressly needs. Kendall Graveman should be considered the fill-in at closer.
Sep 3 2021Pressly recorded the save in Friday's 6-3 win over the Padres, allowing a walk in the ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly entered in the ninth with a three-run lead and worked around a one-out walk to Fernando Tatis to lock down his 23rd save of the season. He's now recorded saves in each of his last four appearances and has permitted just one run in 11 innings dating back to the beginning of August.
Aug 30 2021Pressly saved Monday's 4-3 victory over Seattle, allowing one walk with one strikeout in the ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly's services were mandated when Houston took the lead in the top of the eighth and the closer delivered by working around a leadoff walk to slam the door on Seattle. The 32-year-old has now recorded saves in each of his last three appearances and his 22 saves rank 13th in MLB.
Aug 28 2021Pressly struck out a pair and allowed one hit in an inning of work Saturday to record the save against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly worked around a one-out Nick Solak double to notch his 21st save of the year. The veteran right-hander has been rock-solid all season, converting 21 of 23 save opportunities with a 1.87 ERA and 0.91 WHIP over 53 innings. Pressly may be in line for a day off in Sunday's series finale after picking up the save each of the last two nights.
Aug 27 2021Pressly allowed two hits in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Friday's 5-4 win over Texas. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The save was Pressly's 20th in 22 chances this year. The 32-year-old has excelled in his first full season as a closer, with a sparkling 1.90 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 65:9 K:BB across 52 innings. He's allowed just one run on six hits and a walk while striking out 10 in eight innings in August, although he's picked up just two saves, a win and a blown save in eight appearances for the month.
Aug 22 2021Pressly struck out two batters and allowed a solo home run Sunday, blowing a save chance in a loss to the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was tasked with protecting a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning but immediately served up a leadoff blast to Ty France. He tossed five shutout innings this month prior to Sunday and his ERA bounced to 1.98 through 50 innings. He's 19-for-21 in save opportunities with a terrific 63:9 K:BB.
Aug 20 2021Pressly (5-1) earned the win in relief Thursday against the Royals after tossing a scoreless ninth inning, allowing two hits. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly gave up singles to Carlos Santana and Hunter Dozier, and he found himself with runners on the corners and two outs, but he retired Hanser Alberto on a groundout to come away unscathed. The offensive explosion in the top of the 10th allowed him to earn the win, but perhaps more importantly, Pressly has now tossed five straight scoreless outings. In fact, he has allowed just four earned runs across 11 innings since the All-Star break.
Aug 13 2021Pressly pitched a perfect inning, striking out one batter to notch the save against the Angels on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The closer entered the game without a save -- or a save opportunity -- since July 25. He finally found a path to his 19th save of the campaign by securing a three-run Houston victory with a perfect frame during which he threw seven of 10 pitches for strikes. Pressly's job security as closer is among the most airtight in the league given his 1.88 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 61:9 K:BB across 48 innings this season.
Aug 12 2021Pressly walked one and struck out two over a scoreless ninth inning in Wednesday's 5-1 win over the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly, who hadn't pitched in four days, entered in a non-save situation and shut the door on Colorado. All three of his appearances since coming off the paternity list have been of the non-save variety. All three featured the combination of Ryne Stanek (seventh inning), Kendall Graveman (eighth) and Pressly (ninth). The once-beleaguered Astros bullpen has become boring of late, which is fine by manager Dusty Baker. That trio of relievers have combined to pitch 13.1 scoreless innings with four hits, two walks and 19 strikeouts since the trade deadline.
Aug 4 2021The Astros reinstated Pressly (personal) from the paternity list Wednesday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Houston optioned Bryan Abreu to the taxi squad to clear a spot on the 26-man active roster for Pressly, who left the team Sunday to witness the birth of his child. Though he's been reinstated, Pressly won't be available for Wednesday's series finale with the Dodgers, as the Astros have elected to give him an extra day off to spend with his family. The Astros will play a man short Wednesday before Pressly rejoins the team for Thursday's series opener versus the Twins in Houston.
Aug 1 2021The Astros placed Pressly on the paternity list prior to Sunday's game against the Giants, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to delos Santos, manager Dusty Baker said he doesn't have a timeline for when Pressly will rejoin the team after the All-Star closer and his wife recently welcomed a baby boy into the world. Players placed on the paternity leave list are eligible to remain away from the team for 1-to-3 days, so if Pressly isn't ready to rejoin the Astros ahead of the two-game set with the Dodgers that begins Tuesday, Houston could move him to the restricted list. Kendall Graveman will likely be the team's top option for the ninth inning if a save chance is available for Sunday's series finale in San Francisco.
Jul 28 2021Pressley allowed two runs on three hits and one walk over one inning in Tuesday's 8-6 win over Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It wasn't a save situation for Pressly, who entered with Houston up by four runs. He allowed a two-run home run to Seattle's Abraham Toro, who oddly enough began the day as a member of the Astros before being traded to the team in the dugout across the diamond. The Astros closer then put the tying run on base before retiring Kyle Seager and Ty France to end the game. Pressly had entered the game having allowed just one earned run over the last 19 innings and had a 0.84 ERA in non-save situations.
Jul 25 2021Pressly fired a clean ninth inning, striking out one to earn the save in the win over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly retired the side and struck out Curtis Terry to end the game. It was a nice comeback appearance for Pressly after he allowed his first earned run since May 29 on Saturday. The 32-year-old has a 1.50 ERA and a 0.79 WHIP in 42 innings. He is 18-for-19 in save opportunities, third-highest save percentage for closers with at least 10 saves.
Jul 22 2021Pressly struck out one over a scoreless ninth inning in Wednesday's 5-4 loss to Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Houston manager Dusty Baker brought Pressly in for a non-save situation, as the closer hasn't thrown much lately. He saved Monday's game, which was the closer's first action since July 10. With the team not playing Thursday, Pressly should be available when the Astros open a home series against the Rangers on Friday.
Jul 19 2021Pressly walked one batter and struck out another in a scoreless ninth inning Monday, earning a save over Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly walked Roberto Perez to open the inning but quickly worked around it to earn his 17th save of the season. The 32-year-old righty has now converted his last 10 save chances and is currently riding a 12-inning scoreless streak, lowering his season ERA to 1.38 through 39 innings. He hasn't been charged with an earned run in 16 innings since the start of June.
Jul 7 2021Pressly did not allow a baserunner and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Wednesday against the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was called upon for second consecutive game, this time to protect a one-run lead to earn his 16th save of the season. Since his only blown save chance on May 29, Pressley has turned in 14 straight appearances without allowing an earned run. In addition to being the locked in closer, Pressly has delivered a 1.46 ERA and 47 strikeouts across 37 innings on the campaign.
Jul 4 2021Pressly struck out two in a perfect ninth inning Saturday to record his 14th save of the season in a 3-2 win over Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander needed only 10 pitches (eight strikes) to breeze through the heart of Cleveland's order. Pressly has been absolutely filthy since the beginning of June, picking up two wins and converting all seven of his save chances while not allowing an earned run and racking up a 21:1 K:BB in 12 innings over that stretch.
Jul 2 2021Pressly allowed a hit and struck out two in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Friday's 6-3 win over Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly hasn't given up an earned run in his last 11 innings, collecting six saves and two wins in that span. The Houston closer has a strong 1.59 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 43:5 K:BB across 34 innings this season. He's now 13-for-14 in save chances and should continue to enjoy a fair amount of job stability in the ninth inning.
Jun 26 2021Pressly struck out the side in one inning of work to nail down the save against Detroit on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly continued his outstanding month of June, striking out Harold Castro, Zack Short and Akil Baddoo in the seventh to secure a doubleheader split for the Astros. The 32-year-old closer has yet to allow an earned run in eight innings this month and has converted all five of his save opportunities. In 29 appearances overall this season, Pressly is 4-1 with 12 saves (in 13 chances), along with a 1.74 ERA and 0.90 WHIP across 31 innings. He's fanned 38 while walking only five.
Jun 23 2021Pressly allowed a hit and struck out two over a scoreless ninth inning to preserve the win over Baltimore on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly locked down his 11th save in 12 opportunities to make a winner of Zack Greinke. Since his blown save May 29, when Pressly allowed three runs to the Padres, he has not allowed an earned run while striking out 11 and walking one over seven innings.
Jun 18 2021Pressly (4-1) stuck out the side in a perfect ninth inning and earned a win over the White Sox on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly fanned the side on just 13 pitches to hold the game at a 1-1 tie before Yordan Alvarez delivered a walkoff double in the bottom of the frame. The 32-year-old righty now owns a 1.93 ERA with a 32:5 K:BB in 28 innings. He's 4-1 and has converted 10 of his 11 save chances this season.
Jun 16 2021Pressly (3-1) picked up the win in Tuesday's 6-3 extra-inning victory over the Rangers, giving up one hit and one unearned run in the 10th inning. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Houston closer did allow Texas' designated runner to score, but his team rallied for four runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Pressly has only been tagged for earned runs once in his last 13 appearances, and on the season he boasts a tidy 2.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 29:5 K:BB through 27 innings with 10 saves in 11 chances.
Jun 11 2021Pressly earned the save over the Twins on Friday, pitching a perfect inning and striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was called upon in the bottom of the ninth inning after Houston took a two-run lead in the top of the frame. Pressly needed 20 pitches to retire the side in order, notching a pair of strikeouts in the process. He is now 10-for-11 in save chances this season and has posted a 2.08 ERA along with a 27:5 K:BB across 26 innings.
Jun 6 2021Pressly allowed a walk in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Sunday's 6-3 win over Toronto. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was never in danger of giving up a three-run lead in the ninth inning. Houston's closer has gone 9-for-10 in save chances with a 2.16 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 25:5 K:BB across 25 innings this year.
Jun 2 2021Pressly fired a scoreless ninth inning, allowing two hits while striking out one to earn the save in the win over the Red Sox on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After blowing his first save of the season in his previous outing, Pressly came back Wednesday with his eighth save of the season. It wasn't perfect though, with Pressly allowing the tying run to get in scoring position. The 32-year-old has a 2.25 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP with 25 punchouts in 24 innings. He has done a great job limiting walks with a 1.5 BB/9.
May 29 2021Pressly blew the save against San Diego on Saturday, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing three runs on two hits and a walk while striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was summoned with two outs in the eighth inning and succeeded in squashing a San Diego rally, but he was less effective in the ninth. With Houston up by three runs, Pressly issued a two-out walk, then gave up a double before serving up a game-tying three-run shot to Fernando Tatis Jr. The blown save and home run were both firsts this season for Pressly, who has pitched well overall. He's secured seven saves while registering a 2.35 ERA across 21 outings.
May 28 2021Pressly (neck) is feeling better, but it's not yet clear whether or not he'll be available Friday against the Padres, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly wasn't available in the Astros' previous game against the Dodgers on Wednesday, as his neck was stiff enough that he couldn't turn his head. While the fact that he's feeling better is certainly a good sign and suggests he won't miss much more time, he'll have to throw before the Astros determine whether or not he's ready for game action.
May 26 2021Pressly wasn't available for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers due to neck stiffness, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Dusty Baker said the right-hander was unavailable since he was unable to "even turn his head," resulting in Bryan Abreu picking up the save Wednesday. Pressly will have Thursday's scheduled off day to aid in his recovery before Friday's series opener against the Padres.
May 23 2021Pressly allowed an unearned run on one hit over 1.1 innings and took the loss against the Rangers on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly rolled through a perfect ninth inning on just eight pitches to keep the game tied at 3-3. He then forced two ground balls in the 10th inning, one to move Nick Solak over to third and another to bring Solak home for a Texas victory. It was the first loss or blown save of the year for the 32-year-old who lowered his season ERA to 1.31.
May 21 2021Pressly retired the only batter faced in the eighth inning of Thursday's 8-4 win over the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He entered with Houston leading 6-3 and the bases loaded courtesy of Ryne Stanek's wildness. Pressly squelched the uprising by getting former Astro Tony Kemp to ground out after five pitches. When the Astros went on to score two runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a four-run lead, manager Dusty Baker had Andre Scrubb mop up instead of giving Pressly the opportunity for a four-out save. Pulling Pressly, who had not pitched since May 15, potentially keeps him available if needed to pitch both Friday and Saturday at Texas.
May 16 2021Pressly notched the save Saturday against the Rangers with a scoreless inning, during which he struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly entered in the top of the ninth inning with the Astros holding a one-run lead, and he needed only 17 pitches (12 strikes) to get the job done. He remains perfect in seven save situations this season, and he's recorded four scoreless outings in a row.
May 12 2021Pressly struck out one over a scoreless ninth inning in Tuesday's 5-1 win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly entered a non-save situation that became such while he warmed up during the eighth inning. Houston was holding a 1-0 lead and got Pressly ready to close the deal in the ninth, but the Angels plated the tying run. The Astros then put four on the board in the bottom half of the inning, and the already warmed up Pressly pitched a scoreless ninth.
May 9 2021Pressly struck out two batters in a perfect ninth inning to earn a save over the Blue Jays on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was called upon to protect a 7-4 lead and quickly retired the side on just 13 pitches. It was his first scoreless outing since April 27 and he's now converted all six of his save chances this season. The 32-year-old owns a 1.80 ERA and 17:3 K:BB over 15 innings.
May 6 2021Pressly allowed one earned run on three hits and struck out two across two innings to earn the save Thursday against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly threw multiple innings for the third time this season, though Thursday's effort was the first time his multi-frame efforts resulted in a save. He allowed an earned run on a defensive error behind him but pitched cleanly otherwise. Pressly now has five saves on the season to go along with an excellent 1.93 ERA and 15:3 K:BB across 14 innings.
May 2 2021Pressly allowed one run on a hit and a walk over one inning to record his fourth save in Saturday's 3-1 win over Tampa Bay. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A three-run cushion gave Pressly wiggle room, and he used it. Houston's closer allowed the first two batters to board the bases but then induced three groundouts from the potential game-tying run. It was Pressly's fourth save in as many chances.
Apr 27 2021Pressly earned the save against Seattle on Tuesday, pitching a perfect inning and striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly came on in the ninth to protect a two-run lead and made quick work of the Mariners to notch his third save. The right-hander threw all 11 of his pitches for strikes and finished off the contest by whiffing Kyle Seager. Pressly has allowed only one earned run across 11 innings this season while registering a 13:2 K:BB.
Apr 26 2021Pressly earned a ninth-inning save Monday after holding the Mariners scoreless with one hit and a strikeout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Tasked with protecting a three-run lead in the ninth inning, Pressly gave up a leadoff single to Taylor Trammell, who was thrown out after Sam Haggerty reached first on a fielder's choice. Pressly then sent Sam Marmolejos down on strikes before forcing J.P. Crawford to ground out as he finished off his second save of the season. Across 10 innings, Pressly sports a .90 ERA and 1.30 WHIP.
Apr 24 2021Pressly (2-0) gained his second win Friday, when the Astros plated three in the bottom of the 10th inning against the Angels. He allowed two unearned runs on three hits and one walk while striking out three over two innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly allowed his first two runs of the season in the top half of the extra inning but was spared the loss by Houston's offense. It was the second consecutive game in which he's pitched, so after throwing three innings and 42 pitches the last two nights, Houston's closer may not be available to throw Saturday.
Apr 17 2021Pressly threw a scoreless ninth inning with one strikeout Saturday against the Mariners to earn his first save of the season. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fantasy managers no longer have to look at a goose egg from Pressly in the saves column after he closed out a 1-0 win on eight pitches (seven strikes). The Astros are currently down several star players, but Pressly is clearly fine and there will be plenty more save chances for him to come, especially when the team is back at full strength.
Apr 6 2021Pressly (1-0) earned the win Tuesday after holding the Angels scoreless over the final two innings. He allowed two hits and no walks while striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was another non-save situation for Pressly, who entered a tied game in the eighth inning and blanked the Angels the rest of the way. Thanks to a two-run home run by Carlos Correa in the top of the ninth, the Astros secured the win for Pressly. The 32-year-old has yet to allow a run in three innings of work this season.
Apr 3 2021Pressly worked a scoreless ninth inning, giving up a hit and a walk while striking out one in a 9-5 win over Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For the second straight game to start the season, the potent Houston offense turned a close game into a non-save situation. Pressly didn't enter Thursday's game but got work in Friday.
Mar 12 2021Pressly allowed one hit and struck out one in a scoreless inning against the Mets on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly allowed a leadoff single to Michael Conforto but erased the runner with an inning-ending double play. The right-handed closer has made two scoreless Grapefruit League appearances so far and remains on track for Opening Day.
Mar 8 2021Pressley struck out the side on 14 pitches during a scoreless inning in Sunday's spring game against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly made his Grapefruit League debut and was sharp in dispatching St. Louis regulars in a masterful third inning. Ten of 14 pitches landed in the zone, including his breaking ball, he told Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle. Houston's presumptive closer is coming off an uneven 2020 campaign due to elbow soreness and lingering effects of 2019 knee surgery.
Feb 21 2021Pressly spent the offseason working on his direction to the plate, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly, who is competing to be the closer or part of a closing committee, is coming off a season in which he felt out of sync. Whether it was his fastball having too much cut, inconsistency with his curveball, or a slider that looked too much like his fastball, Pressly's performance suffered. He's thrown multiple bullpen sessions at Minute Maid Park with Trackman technology, and Pressly said everything was "spot on" and pitches were staying true. If the hurler recaptures his 2018 and 2019 form, he could be Houston's closer.
Oct 17 2020Pressly allowed one hit and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save in Game 6 of the ALCS. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was called upon to protect a 7-4 lead and managed to do so with little trouble. Despite allowing one baserunner, he induced a double play from the next batter he faced to end the contest. Pressly has been dominant to this point in the postseason, as he's picked up four saves and a win while maintaining a 2.45 ERA with an 8:1 K:BB across 7.1 frames.
Oct 16 2020Pressly allowed one hit and struck out two over 1.1 scoreless innings to earn the win over the Rays on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Both teams went with bullpen days in Game 5 of the ALCS, and Pressly was the last of seven pitchers used by Houston. The right-hander battled some elbow trouble early on during the regular season and posted a 4.22 ERA in August, but Pressly has looked a lot more like himself since the beginning of September (21:4 K:BB in his last 16.2 innings), shoring up the back end for manager Dusty Baker.
Sep 26 2020Pressly allowed a solo home run and struck out two in a blown save Friday against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly had been in a groove as the closer this month until Ronald Guzman took him deep in the ninth inning to send the game into extra innings. The reliever told Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle the pitch was placed where he wanted it -- a curveball down and in -- but Guzman reached down and got it. It was the fourth blown save of the season for Pressly, whose previous blown save came on Sept. 1.
Sep 20 2020Pressly struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Sunday, earning a save in the win over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly made quick work of Arizona's 4-5-6 hitters Sunday, needing just 14 pitches to slam the door and preserve the 3-2 victory. He's now converted his last six save chances, making him 12-for-15 this season.
Sep 19 2020Pressly struck out two in a perfect ninth inning to earn the save against the Diamondbacks on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly has been inconsistent of late, taking two losses in his last five appearances. However, he did not struggle at all Saturday, striking out a pair and retiring the side on 11 pitches to earn his 11th save. Overall, Pressly has maintained a 3.79 ERA and 26:7 K:BB across 19 frames this season.
Sep 16 2020Pressly (1-3) was charged with the loss against the Rangers on Wednesday, recording two outs while allowing one run on two hits. He walked one and struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly came into a scoreless game in the ninth inning and immediately gave up a leadoff single to Leody Taveras. He then allowed Taveras to score on a ground-rule double by Joey Gallo, giving the Rangers the lead for good. It was the third loss of the season for the right-hander, who has converted 10 saves in 13 opportunities. On the season, Pressly holds a 4.00 ERA and 1.56 WHIP.
Sep 15 2020Pressly allowed one hit and struck out one while throwing a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Tuesday against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly came in with a three-run lead. He allowed a two-out single, but was never in true danger and tallied his 10th save with relative ease. After a bumpy start in his tenure as the closer, Pressly has turned in a scoreless performance in eight of his last 10 outings. He should get the majority of the saves for the team down the stretch.
Sep 12 2020Pressly picked up the save against the Dodgers on Saturday, allowing two hits in a scoreless ninth inning while striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly received the opportunity to close out the game after Houston rallied for five runs in the top of the ninth inning. He gave up a single and a double but was able to emerge unscathed thanks to a double play and a strikeout. The right-hander has proven to be a reliable closer after taking over for Roberto Osuna (elbow) in early August; since blowing his first save after assuming ninth-inning duties, Pressly has converted eight of 10 save chances while registering a 2.45 ERA and 20:4 K:BB over 14.2 innings.
Sep 9 2020Pressly (1-2) allowed a run on a hit and a walk over two-thirds of an inning, taking the loss Wednesday versus the Athletics. He also hit a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly entered the game with the score tied at two. His two outs came in the form of fielder's choices, but a walkoff single from Ramon Laureano left the Astros' closer with a loss. The 31-year-old Pressly has a 4.11 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and eight saves in 17 appearances spanning 15.1 innings this season.
Sep 6 2020Pressly was not available for Saturday's doubleheader, Richard Justice of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a tough day for manager Dusty Baker not to have Pressly available, as both games evolved into save situations. Without Pressly, who had thrown 49 pitches while pitching three of the previous four days, Baker was forced to go with unproven rookie relievers to close both games.
Sep 2 2020Pressly earned the save against the Rangers on Wednesday after tossing a perfect ninth inning that included two strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Called upon to protect a 2-1 lead in the ninth, Pressly barely hesitated in retiring all three of his batters, throwing 11-of-14 pitches for strikes. The 31-year-old now sports a 4.26 ERA and 1.42 WHIP with seven saves across 14 appearances.
Sep 1 2020Pressly was tagged with the blown save against the Rangers on Tuesday, allowing one run one two hits in one inning while striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was called upon to protect a one-run lead in the top of the ninth inning, but Elvis Andrus greeted him with a homer leading off the frame to spoil the save opportunity. After a rough start to the campaign, Pressly had converted each of his previous five save chances, so Tuesday's hiccup is unlikely to threaten his role as the team's closer.
Aug 29 2020Pressly recorded the save in both games of Saturday's doubleheader sweep of the A's, throwing two perfect innings and striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After fanning one batter in the matinee, Pressly was even more dominant in the nightcap, striking out the side on only 11 pitches. The 31-year-old is up to six saves on the season, and his efforts Saturday lowered his ERA to 4.22, although his 15:4 K:BB through 10.2 innings offers a better picture of how he's pitched.
Aug 25 2020Pressly earned the save in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Angels, allowing one hit with two strikeouts and zero walks in a scoreless seventh inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander gave up a single to Alberto Pujols to start the frame, but he put down the next three batters to lock down the victory. Pressly has converted four of six save chances and has given up five runs on 12 hits with a 11:4 K:BB through 8.2 innings.
Aug 20 2020Pressly allowed one earned run on one hit but earned the save Thursday against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly entered the game with a three-run cushion. He allowed a leadoff triple, but retired the next three batters he faced to lock down his third save of the season. After a rocky start to the campaign, Pressly has allowed only two earned runs across his last seven innings while striking out eight. He should serve as the Astros primary closer until Roberto Osuna (elbow) is able to return.
Aug 17 2020Pressly (1-1) struck out one over a scoreless ninth inning and picked up the win against the Mariners on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was the beneficiary of Kyle Tucker's walkoff home run in the bottom of the ninth. After a stint on the injured list and shaky start, Pressly is settling in with one run allowed over 5.1 innings, spanning five appearances.
Aug 16 2020Pressly picked up the save against Seattle on Saturday, pitching a perfect ninth inning and striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly rebounded from a blown save in his last appearance with a clean and easy outing against the Mariners. The right-hander needed only eight pitches -- all of which were strikes -- to retire the side in order and secure his second save of the campaign. Pressly appears locked into the closer role for the time being, though Roberto Osuna (elbow) is hoping to return to action later this season.
Aug 12 2020Pressly blew the save Tuesday against the Giants. He allowed one run on two hits and one walk while fanning two in one inning. He also threw a wild pitch. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly entered the ninth inning with a one-run lead, but he couldn't get the job and allowed the Giants to tie the game on an RBI single from Darin Ruf. Things could've gone worse for the 31-year-old right-hander as he had Hunter Pence at third with two outs, but he struck out Wilmer Flores to end the threat. Pressly now has gone 1-for-3 in save opportunities this season.
Aug 10 2020Pressly allowed two hits in one scoreless inning to earn the save in Monday's 6-4 win over the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Reliever Josh James struggled in the ninth inning, creating a save situation. Pressly allowed two inherited runners to score, but was able to preserve the lead in the end. The 31-year-old Pressly is now 1-for-2 in save chances since taking over for the injured Roberto Osuna (elbow), and he figures to get most of the ninth-inning duties going forward.
Aug 6 2020Pressly (0-1) was charged with the loss and a blown save Thursday against the Diamondbacks, surrendering two runs on three hits and a walk without recording any outs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Tasked with protecting a one-run lead in the ninth, Pressly did quite the opposite. The 31-year-old unraveled in his first save opportunity, loading up the bases and giving up a two-run, walk-off single to Kole Calhoun to end the disastrous outing. Pressly was filling in as closer with Roberto Osuna sidelined, but that role may have ended as soon as it began.
Aug 3 2020Pressly is likely the top candidate to close for the Astros after Roberto Osuna (elbow) was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday, David Barron of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly went unused Sunday in the Astros' come-from-behind 6-5 win in 11 innings, but manager Dusty Baker may just have wanted to be conservative with the right-hander's usage after he made his season debut just one day earlier. The 31-year-old had been slowed since the start of summer camp with a blister on his right index finger and a sore elbow, and it's worth noting that he developed a cut above the thumbnail on his pitching hand in Saturday's outing. That shouldn't be an issue for Pressly when the Astros return to action Tuesday in Arizona, but he could still need some time to shake off the rust and reemerge as the late-inning ace he has been for Houston over the past two seasons. If Baker ends up going in a different direction at closer, Blake Taylor, Bryan Abreu and Cy Sneed are the next-best bets for saves.
Aug 2 2020Pressly pitched two-thirds of an inning in Saturday's loss to the Angels but left after having trainers come to the mound to look at a cut on the cuticle above his thumbnail, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. However, manager Dusty Baker downplayed the issue after the game. "Fortunately for us, he was alright," Baker said. "We got him out of there because we didn't want him to throw too many pitches because that's his first outing." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly's status takes on a greater urgency following Chris Devenski's trip to the IL and Roberto Osuna leaving Saturday's game with arm discomfort. There's a chance that Pressly could close immediately. Other options include Bryan Abreu and Cy Sneed in the short-term.
Jul 31 2020Pressly (elbow) could be available for Saturday's game against the Angels, Julia Morales of AT&T SportsNet Southwest reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly hasn't appeared in a game for the Astros this season as he deals with elbow soreness, but manager Dusty Baker said that the right-hander could be available Saturday. However, Roberto Osuna has a firm hold on the closer's role despite his absence for the first several games.
Jul 29 2020Pressly (elbow) will travel with the team this weekend but is unavailable to pitch Wednesday, Julia Morales of AT&T SportsNet Southwest reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The team continues to operate as though Pressly can avoid a stint on the injured list, but considering he is dealing with elbow soreness, we can't rule anything out. Roberto Osuna recorded his first save Monday and has a firm hold on the closer's role.
Jul 28 2020Astros manager Dusty Baker is hopeful that Pressly (elbow) will be able to avoid the injured list, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's nothing concrete, but it does sound as though Pressly's elbow soreness may not be too serious. He's yet to appear in a game this season and appears to have missed his window as the Astros' temporary closer, as Roberto Osuna recorded his first save of the year Monday.
Jul 27 2020Pressly has elbow soreness and is day-to-day, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This explains why we haven't seen Pressly pitch in a game this season. His elbow apparently started barking when he was warming up during Sunday's game. While manager Dusty Baker says Pressly is day-to-day, the team will likely run tests on his elbow and provide a more substantial diagnosis in the coming days. In the meantime, it would seem that Roberto Osuna is the clear closer.
Jul 22 2020Pressly started Tuesday's exhibition game against the Royals and set the side down in order in his one inning of work, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly, who had been dealing with a blister on his right index finger, showed no effects during a surprise start. With rain threatening a cancellation, the Astros scratched starter Josh James and used a steady stream of relievers to get through the nine innings. Pressly struck out the first two batters on his way to a 1-2-3 inning on 12 pitches, and his fastball approached 96 MPH. "I was really happy with my breaking stuff, the fastball had some life to it," Pressly said. "I'm really excited with where I'm at compared to the end of last year. Everything is moving better and more in sync so I'm excited to get the season going." He'll open the season as Houston's closer while Roberto Osuna (not injury related) is unavailable.
Jul 21 2020Astros manager Dusty Baker said Monday that Pressly (finger) will "probably" close games for Houston if Roberto Osuna (not injury related) is not ready to go for the start of the season, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Arguably the most dominant non-closing reliever in baseball since arriving in Houston at the 2018 trade deadline, Pressly was already widely assumed to be the odds-on favorite to fill in for Osuna if needed, but it's nice to hear Baker essentially confirm as much in advance of Opening Day. Baker has thus far been cryptic about Osuna's status in advance of the opener, as the incumbent closer didn't travel with the club to Kansas City this week for a pair of exhibitions and has yet to throw off a mound since reporting late to summer camp "through no fault of his own," according to the skipper. Once he gets back on a mound, Osuna probably won't need much time to ramp up, but his uncertain timeline could at least give Pressly a window to claim the closing gig and potentially run away with it. Pressly was stalled early in camp by a blister on his right index finger, but Rome relays that he's slated to appear in Tuesday's exhibition.
Jul 20 2020Pressly (finger) will be the next man up if Roberto Osuna isn't in game shape by Opening Day, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Osuna isn't injured, but he showed up to camp behind his teammates and may not have time to get ready to close games at the start of the season. Pressly has issues of his own, as he's been battling a blister in recent days, but there's a good chance he'll be the Astros' top bullpen arm for the first few games of the season. There's a case to be made that he's the team's best reliever even with Osuna available, as he beat Osuna in ERA (2.32 to 2.63), FIP (2.66 to 3.21), strikeout rate (34.1 percent to 28.8 percent) and groundball rate (50.8 percent to 38.8 percent) last season, but there's been no indication that Houston intends for Pressly to take over the role on a permanent basis.
Jul 15 2020Pressly was held out of Tuesday's intrasquad game due to a blister on his right index finger, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The initial report did not include a reason for Pressly being held out Tuesday, but this news clarifies the matter. That the injury is merely a blister should be a relief to those counting on Pressly for fantasy teams.
Jul 14 2020Pressly didn't pitch Tuesday due to an undisclosed injury, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was scheduled to throw Tuesday, but manager Dusty Baker revealed that he was unable to do so because of an undisclosed ailment. The nature and severity of the injury are unclear, and whether the issue impacts his availability for Opening Day remains to be seen. The Astros are scheduled to begin the regular season against the Mariners on July 24.
Jul 8 2020Pressly threw live batting practice Tuesday for the first time since joining summer camp, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly, who reported his mechanics were off during spring training, was pleased with Tuesday's session and declared himself ready to go. Houston's top setup man focused on his curveball during the session. "We're a couple of weeks away, so I think everybody is kind of getting arms in shape and trying to maneuver around everything that's happening," Pressly said. Pressly said his right knee is physically fine after he underwent arthroscopic surgery last August.
Mar 5 2020Pressly allowed one walk and struck out one over a scoreless inning in Wednesday's spring game against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was Pressly's first spring appearance. Both he and closer Roberto Osuna made their debuts, pitching the fourth and fifth innings, respectively. They are the back end of Houston's bullpen. Pressly is one of the best setup men in the league; if your league values holds, then Pressly's your guy. He tied for the MLB lead with 31 holds in 2019 and also picked up three saves.
Oct 22 2019Pressly (knee) is on the Astros' World Series roster. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After leaving Game 6 of the ALCS with right knee discomfort, there was some uncertainty regarding Pressly's availability for the World Series. However, the 30-year-old should be available as Houston's setup man for the series against the Nationals after being included on the roster.
Oct 21 2019Pressly (knee) is expected to be on the Astros' roster for the World Series, Julia Morales of AT&T; SportsNet Southwest reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly left the final game of the ALCS on Saturday with right knee discomfort, a potential concern given that he underwent knee surgery in August. The Astros anticipate him being ready to go, but he's yet to be officially cleared.
Oct 19 2019Pressly (knee) said he'll be ready to pitch in Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday against the Nationals, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly exited Game 6 of the ALCS on Saturday with right knee discomfort, but he said some scar tissue in his knee came off, which was something he expected to occur at some point after undergoing knee surgery in August. The 30-year-old will now have Sunday and Monday to rest up after the Astros clinched their trip to the World Series with Saturday's walkoff victory.
Sep 25 2019Pressly allowed one hit and one walk while striking out three in the eighth inning to pick up the hold in Tuesday's 3-0 win over the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was Pressly's second outing since coming off the injured list and marked a return to his traditional role as the eighth-inning bridge to closer Roberto Osuna. In his first game back last Friday, he pitched the seventh inning while Will Harris worked the eighth. Pressly has struck out five batters in two innings of relief since his return.
Sep 21 2019Pressly worked a perfect inning while striking out two to record a hold in Friday's 6-4 win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly returned to active duty Friday after recovering from knee surgery that kept him out of action since Aug. 20. He slotted back into his normal role as part of the setup crew for closer Roberto Osuna.
Sep 20 2019Pressly (knee) was activated from the 10-day injured list Friday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Astros have their setup man -- one of the best in the game -- back in time to shake the rust before the postseason begins. Earlier in the year, Pressly set a major-league record with his 39th consecutive scoreless appearance (dating back to 2018), but his performance was up and down over the summer as he tried to battle through his knee issue.
Sep 18 2019The Astros hope Pressly (knee) will get into a game this weekend against the Angels, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: That would give him a little over a week to knock some rust off before the postseason. Pressly had a 2.50 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 65 strikeouts in 50.1 innings prior to the injury. Despite that dominance in high-leverage spots, he only has two wins and three saves this season.
Sep 15 2019Pressly (knee) is expected to throw live batting practice when the Astros return home, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly threw a bullpen session Saturday, the first since undergoing right knee surgery, and passed that test. The Astros come back from the road to kick off a series against the Rangers on Tuesday, so the live BP session should occur in the next few days. Manager AJ Hinch intimated it could be the final hurdle before he returns to active duty in the Astros' bullpen.
Sep 14 2019Pressly (knee) threw a bullpen session Saturday, Julia Morales of AT&T; SportsNet Southwest reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This is his first such session since he had arthroscopic right knee surgery back in August. Houston hopes to get its top setup man back for the final 10 days of the season, which would mean Pressly would be activated sometime next week.
Sep 10 2019Manager AJ Hinch is hopeful to get Pressly (knee) back for "the last 10 days of the season or so," Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly was able to complete a bullpen session Sunday, and he figures to continue to ramp up his activity within the next week. The Astros are likely most concerned with getting the right-hander ready for the postseason, but Houston would certainly like him to see major-league action prior to the playoffs if possible.
Sep 8 2019Pressly (knee) was scheduled to complete a bullpen session Sunday, David Barron of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Assuming Pressly's right knee responded well to the activity, he'll be in line for at least one or two more bullpen sessions before he advances to facing hitters. Manager AJ Hinch said Sunday that Pressly would likely come off the 10-day injured list "sooner rather than later," suggesting that the right-handed reliever remains on pace to pitch for the big club before the regular season ends.
Sep 7 2019Pressly (knee) threw 10-15 pitches off a mound Friday, David Barron of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pressly included a few breaking balls during his session, which was thrown from about two-thirds up the slope of the mound. The next step, per manager AJ Hinch, will be a full bullpen session over the weekend. "He (Pressly) is progressing nicely," the manager said. "Better than good. He has been excellent."
Aug 31 2019Pressly (knee) played catch Saturday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Aug 22 2019Pressly was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday and will miss 4-to-6 weeks following arthroscopic right knee surgery, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports.
Aug 15 2019Pressly (2-3) allowed four runs on three hits and a walk while striking out two and was tagged with the loss to the White Sox on Wednesday.
Aug 9 2019Pressly (knee) was activated off the 10-day injured list Friday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Aug 6 2019Pressly (knee) is on track to return from the 10-day injured list Friday in Baltimore, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Aug 4 2019Pressly (knee) completed a bullpen session Sunday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Jul 31 2019The Astros placed Pressly (knee) on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports.
Jul 30 2019Pressly's (knee) status remains uncertain Tuesday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Jun 9 2018Pressly gave up two runs, on a two-run home run, on two hits in the seventh inning to take the loss in Friday's defeat to the Angels. His ERA increased to 3.73.Pressly was having a solid season in a setup role until late May, as he's given up three home runs and seven earned runs in his last four innings over five appearances. Pressly is likely suffering from overuse as he's appeared in 33 of Minnesota's first 60 games. Pressly has increased his strikeout rate to a career-high 12.9 K/9 and has been somewhat unlucky with a .392 BABIP, so there's every reason to think he'll turn things around if he's used more conservatively.
Apr 10 2018Pressly threw a scoreless inning in Monday's loss to Houston with two strikeouts. He's thrown 4.1 scoreless innings to begin the season.Pressly has six strikeouts and two walks in 4.1 innings, so he's off to a strong start. He was roughed up early in 2017, but finished with a 2.62 ERA and .247 wOBA in the second half so this may be a continuation of that trend. He'll figure prominently in the late innings, but is in the mix of few relievers behind Addison Reed for saves if Fernando Rodney gets hurt or loses his closer role.
Jan 12 2018Pressly agreed to a one-year, $1.6 million contract with the Twins on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. The right-hander will receive a $425,000 pay increase in his second year of arbitration eligibility. Pressly averages close to 96 mph with his fastball and gets good spin on his breaking pitches. He was roughed up early on in 2017, but finished with a 2.62 ERA and .247 wOBA in the second half, putting him in line for a more prominent role in the Twins' bullpen to begin 2018.
Aug 12 2017Pressly has a 2.28 ERA and 0.76 WHIP with 21 strikeouts across 23.2 innings since the start of June.Pressly struggled mightily in the first two months of the season with 19 runs allowed over 18 innings, but has put up some impressive numbers since. The 28-year-old has a 2-2 record with eight holds and a solid 44:9 K:BB for the season, but still only sees high-leverage work on an infrequent basis.
Jul 1 2017Pressly was promoted to Minnesota prior to its doubleheader against the Royals on Saturday, Mike Berardino of the Pioneer Press reports.Pressly is bound for another appearance with the Twins, as the 28-year-old makes yet another trip to the big leagues this season. During 22 innings of work at the major-league level, Pressly holds a ghastly ERA of 8.18, with a 26:8 K:BB. Besides a few poor outings, Pressly has held his own, which is why the Twins are calling on his relief capabilities for extra bullpen depth before their doubleheader.
Jun 12 2017Pressly will be called up for Tuesday's game against Seattle, Darren Wolfson of KSTP reports. The Twins bullpen needs reinforcements after Adalberto Mejia lasted just 3.2 innings in Monday's loss. Pressly was terrible in the first two months of the season, as he allowed a 9.50 ERA and 1.61 WHIP and was done in by five home runs. Still, he gives the Twins a veteran arm in that bullpen, and more importantly, a fresh one.
May 30 2017Pressly gave up five runs on three hits and walk while retiring one batter in Monday's loss to Houston. Pressly's ERA rose to 8.50Pressly and the bullpen combined to give up a six-run lead in the eighth and ninth inning. Pressly has 23 strikeouts in 18 innings, but he's giving up too much contact with 20 hits and four home runs allowed. His continued struggles may see him moves to low-profile roles in the bullpen.
May 5 2017Pressly gave up two runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning in Thursday's loss to Oakland.Pressley's April struggles have continued into May as his ERA rose to 9.31. He does have a 11:3 K:BB, 10.2 K/9 and an average fastball velocity of 95.8 MPH (which would be a career high), so there are signs he can turn his season around.
Apr 24 2017Pressly gave up three hits, including a home run, and allowed three runs in two-thirds of an inning in Sunday's loss to Detroit. His ERA rose to 10.80Pressly has struggled in April as he's given up three home runs in 6.2 innings. He does have six strikeouts and just one walk, so he can improve if he keeps the ball in the park. However, he's not going to compete for saves any time soon given his struggles and closer Brandon Kintzler's strong April.
Apr 16 2017Pressly gave up a two-run home run and three hits in an inning to take the loss in Sunday's defeat to the White Sox. Despite giving up two home runs in his last two outings, manager Paul Molitor expressed confidence in Pressly. "It's definitely a fluke. He's got some of the nastiest stuff on our staff," Molitor said.Pressly took the loss in two of the three games this weekend against the White Sox. He does have five strikeouts in 4.2 innings despite the rocky start to the season.
Apr 7 2017Pressly has tossed two scoreless innings in the regular season after the club revamped his mechanics, LaVelle E. Neal III of the Star Tribune reports.Pressly endured a rough final spring appearance (four runs allowed on two hits and two walks), so the Twins tweaked his delivery and fastball approach. The alterations seem to be paying off. Though he worked in the sixth inning Thursday, the right-hander could work into being the backup closer to Brandon Kintzler for as long as Glen Perkins (shoulder) is sidelined.
Mar 18 2017Pressly has thrown five scoreless innings with four strikeouts and no walks in five appearances in spring training. He could be a contender for the closer role, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. With Glen Perkins likely to begin the season on the DL and no timetable set for his return, Brandon Kintzler should begin the season as Minnesota's closer. However, it sounds like Pressly has been impressive enough this spring that he could figure into the mix if Kintzler stumbles.
Jan 13 2017Pressly and the Twins avoided arbitration with a $1.175 million deal on Friday, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN reports.Pressly led the American league in appearances before the Twins decided to reduce his workload, so he's a valuable innings eater out of the bullpen. In total, he posted a 3.70 ERA in 75.1 innings while striking out 67. This was his first round of arbitration.
Sep 16 2016Pressly will not be used in back-to-back game the rest of the season, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.Pressly leads the AL with 69 appearances, so the Twins want to control his workload the final few weeks. He's had a productive season with a 3.72 ERA and 7.8 K/9.
Jul 31 2016Pressly pitched a scoreless ninth inning while allowing one hit and striking out one to earn his first save of the season Sunday against the White Sox.Pressly was protecting a two-run lead, and gave up a two-out double before striking out Justin Morneau to end the game. Since July 20, he's now collected three victories and a save, and he owns a 3.67 ERA on the year.
Jun 15 2016Pressly threw one shutout inning during Tuesday's loss to the Angels, bringing his ERA down to 4.17 for the season.Pressly struggled to be consistent in the month of May, as he allowed 10 earned runs across 14.1 innings. However, he's improved in June, giving up two runs in eight innings of action. However, what's most notable is his increased control. After walking 14 batters in his first 20.2 innings of the season, Pressly has walked just one batter in the following 16 innings.
May 14 2016Pressly gave up one hit in 0.2 scoreless innings in Friday's loss to Cleveland.Pressly now has two consecutive scoreless outings after giving up five earned runs in his previous two appearances. The 27-year-old strikes batters out, as evidenced by his 9.15 K/9 ratio, but he allows plenty of walks and hits which has led to his 5.03 ERA and 1.78 WHIP.
Apr 16 2016Pressly (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth inning for his first victory of the season in Saturday's 6-4 win over the Angels. The 27-year-old righty pitched a clean inning for the first time since throwing two no-hit frames on Opening Day versus the Orioles. Pressly secured a bullpen job in spring training and has been largely effective, as he's yet to surrender an earned run despite his propensity for putting at least one runner on base in all but two games this season. He was highly efficient Saturday, needing only nine pitches to dispose of the Angels in the eighth. After issuing three free passes over his first four appearances, Pressly has now encouragingly gone three straight games without a walk.
Mar 30 2016Pressly has won a job in Minnesota's bullpen, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.Pressly had a 1.80 ERA this spring with a 10:4 K:BB ratio in ten innings. He showed promise in the bullpen with a 94.2 average mph fastball and a decent 7.1 K/9 last season, but a strained right lat muscle injury ended his season in early August. He'll be used in middle relief but could become a key setup man before too long.
Mar 23 2016Pressly is a heavy favorite to win a spot in the bullpen, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. He has a 2.25 ERA with an 8:4 K:BB ratio in eight innings this spring.Pressly showed promise in the bullpen with a 94.2 average mph fastball and a decent 7.1 K/9 last season, but a strained right lat muscle injury ended his season in early August. Jan 24 2016Pressly will enter spring training with a chance for a high-profile role in the Minnesota bullpen, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. "I don't think people realize how well (Pressly) was throwing the ball before he got hurt (strained latissimus) last year, and now he's healthy," Molitor said.Pressly showed promise in the bullpen with a 94.2 average mph fastball and a decent 7.1 K/9 last season. Aug 17 2015Pressly (shoulder) has been ruled out for the season, according to general manager Terry Ryan, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer-Press reports.Pressly has been rehabbing a right lat strain since early July, but his progress has been slow, so much so that the team is comfortable ruling him out for the rest of 2015. The right-hander will work toward being ready for the start of next season, which should not be a problem, assuming he does not suffer a major setback.
Aug 2 2015Pressly (shoulder) will move to the 60-day DL to make room on the 40-man roster for Tyler Duffey, MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger reports.Pressly has been progressing well with his recovery from a right lat strain, as this move is merely procedural, allowing the Twins to clear up a roster spot for Wednesday's projected starter. At the moment, the right-hander remains in line for a mid-August return.
Jul 26 2015Pressly (shoulder) is expected to resume throwing within a week, Andy Greder of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.A right lat strain has kept Pressly out of commission since the Fourth of July. Pressly will need to complete multiple bullpen and live pitching sessions before he's activated from the DL, which will likely push back his return date until early-to-mid August, at the soonest.
Jul 6 2015Pressly was placed on the 15-day DL before Monday's game with a right lat strain, retroactive to July 5.Pressly left Saturday's game against the Royals with the injury. Trevor May will move to the bullpen with Ervin Santana back from a suspension, and May could get some high-leverage work with Pressly out.
Jul 5 2015Pressly's MRI on Sunday revealed that the pitcher is suffering from a strained right lat muscle, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. The Twins will determine Monday whether or not Pressly will require a stint on the disabled list to recover from the injury. He's been a useful cog in middle relief for the Twins this season, producing a 2.93 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, and 22:12 K:BB ratio over 27.2 innings.
Jul 5 2015Pressly underwent an MRI on his strained right shoulder Sunday morning, MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger reports.Pressly left Saturday's game against the Royals with the injury, and the Twins are still trying to assess the severity of the ailment. Once the results of the MRI become available, the team should have a better handle on the situation.
Jul 4 2015Pressly left Saturday's game against the Royals with a right shoulder strain, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.Pressly was able to get in one inning of work in before the injury, giving up just one hit and striking out one. May 30 2015Pressly got the win Saturday, pitching a perfect seventh inning and striking out one. He's become a bit of a vulture since getting called up at the beginning of May, picking up two victories in 12 appearances (13 innings). If Pressly can keep falling into wins he'll have some value, but otherwise he's a standard-issue fungible middle reliever.
May 1 2015Pressly was recalled from Triple-A Rochester on Friday, MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger reports.Pressly will take the roster spot of Tim Stauffer, who was placed on the 15-day DL with a right intercostal strain. Pressly owns a 5.4 K/9 over 105 career major-league innings, so he'll likely see most of his work in medium-to-low leverage situations.
Sep 26 2014Pressly gave up a run and two hits in one inning in Thursday's loss to Detroit to increase his ERA to 2.63.While Pressly has been productive as a middle reliever since his recall from Triple-A in July, his peripheral numbers don't back up his low ERA. He has just a 4.6 K/9 IP and a 4.52 FIP. Still, he's likely cemented his job as a middle reliever in next year's bullpen.
Jul 23 2014Pressly was recalled from Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday, LaVelle Neal of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. The 25-year-old right-hander was making a strong case for a promotion at Rochester, posting a 2.98 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 9.4 K/9 in 35 appearances, and after Matt Guerrier imploded Tuesday, the Twins decided to make the switch. In 76.2 innings with the big club last season, Pressley fanned just 49 batters, so it seems likely he'll work exclusively in middle relief while up.
Mar 24 2014Pressly was optioned to Triple-A Rochester.Pressly spent all last season on the major league roster as a Rule 5 pick and was productive with a 3.56 ERA, so it's a little surprising he was sent to the minors. He could be one of the first relievers called up if there's an opening as a result.
Sep 17 2013Pressly threw a scoreless inning in Monday's blowout loss to Chicago. He's throw two consecutive scoreless innings after a poor stretch that saw him give up 11 ER over 18.2 innings from Aug. 5 to Sept. 11.Pressly has struggled a bit in the second half with a 4.25 ERA (compared to 3.09 ERA in the first half), but his season is still a success as the Rule 5 pick stayed on the big league roster all season and has been productive. He has a 3.56 ERA overall, but just a 5.6 K/9 IP and walks too many at 3.1 BB/9 IP. However, he has a decent groundball rate (43.6 percent) and has only allowed four home runs.
Jul 22 2013Pressly gave up a run on two hits and a walk with no strikeouts in one inning in Sunday's loss to Cleveland. It was his first appearance since he sprained his ankle before the All-Star break. With the time off during the All-Star break, he's back to full strength. Jul 13 2013Pressly rolled his ankle while attempting to field a bunt attempt Friday at the Yankees, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. The area experienced tightness following his relief appearance.Pressly was less than crisp, allowing the only two runs of the game on two hits and no walks, as he took his second loss of the season. The middle reliever has now yielded at least one run in seven of his last nine outings, posting a 7.24 ERA, 1.829 WHIP, and 7:5 K:BB ratio in 13.2 innings during that span. Consequently, his role is seemingly insecure at the moment.
Jun 20 2013Pressly gave up two runs in an inning with a strikeout in Wednesday's win over the White Sox. He's given up two runs in two innings in two appearances since he had a sore shoulder on June 9.Pressly was also dealing with an illness last week, but it looks like he's back to full strength. Wednesday's outing was a rare off night as he has a 1.74 ERA and 24:12 K:BB ratio in 31 innings.
Jun 12 2013Pressly's shoulder is now OK, but he was sent home Wednesday by the Twins due to an illness, MLB.com reports. While Jared Burton is available out of Minnesota's bullpen for the first time since Saturday, Pressly has moved from one ailment to the next. Luckily, because the triceps soreness is behind him, Pressly should in fact return to action in the near future.
Jun 11 2013Pressly (triceps/shoulder) threw a bullpen session on Tuesday, the MLB.com reports. He wasn't available for Tuesday's game, but could pitch Wednesday. He left Sunday's game with an ailment that was thought to be right triceps soreness, but was later revealed to be more in his shoulder.
Jun 9 2013Pressly was removed from Sunday's game with right triceps soreness, MLB.com reports.Pressly was removed from the game in the sixth inning after facing five batters, but was able to keep his sterling 1.24 ERA intact after Josh Roenicke stepped into to strand the runners Pressly had allowed. May 9 2013Pressly threw four scoreless innings with three strikeouts and two walks to earn his first career win in Wednesday's victory over Boston.Pressly entered the game after starter Pedro Hernandez left after just two innings. Pressly doesn't have a high-profile role in the bullpen, but he's likely to stay on the team all season as a Rule 5 pickup. It is worrisome that he's given up eight walks in 15.2 innings despite a 1.72 ERA.
Apr 4 2013Pressly made his major league debut in Thursday's win over Detroit, throwing a scoreless inning with one hit allowed and one strikeout.Pressly made the bullpen as a Rule 5 pick out of Boston's farm system. He'll likely have a low profile role, but the Twins may keep him on the roster all season as a result.
Mar 14 2013Pressly threw two scoreless innings in Thursday's spring training loss to Boston. He's given up just one run in ten innings this spring. "He's throwing the ball well," manager Ron Gardenhire told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "Velocity, good angle, nice little breaking ball. He's been very impressive. We like him a lot. We like what he's doing. Holds runners, does all the little things. Pretty impressive young man."It sounds like Pressly has a legitimate chance to make the major league bullpen. The Twins have extra incentive to keep him on the major league roster because he was a Rule 5 pick from Boston's farm system. Pressly does only have three strikeouts in 10 spring innings, however.
