Nov 4 2019Smith received a qualifying offer from the Giants on Monday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Smith's decision on whether or not to accept the one-year, $17.8 million deal may be the toughest among the 10 players who were given the offer Monday. The draft-pick penalty which will now be assigned to him may dampen the market for the 30-year-old reliever even though he recorded 34 saves and a 2.76 ERA last season.
Oct 6 2019Smith is out of the lineup Sunday for Game 3 of the NLDS between the Dodgers and the Nationals, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Smith will take a seat Sunday in a tilt against the Nationals as Russell Martin will get the nod behind the plate in favor of the rookie. Through the first two games, Smith has gone 1-for-7 with three strikeouts and a walk. The righty showed flashes of solid power during the regular season but also had a tendency to strike out in bunches. After Smith struggled in his first two career playoff games, the Dodgers will turn to the veteran in Martin in a decisive Game 3. After all, Martin and starter Hyun-Jin Ryu have combined for a 1.52 ERA in 20 starts this season.
Sep 29 2019Smith went 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and a run scored in the Dodgers' 9-0 win over the Giants on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Smith went on a 12-game homerless streak in the month of September before finally hitting one out last Sunday. One week later and he has his second home run of the month and his 15th of his bright rookie season. The 24-year-old catcher struggled a bit with consistency at the plate for certain stretches of the season but possesses immense power and should play a key role as he gets set for his first-ever appearance in the postseason.
Sep 28 2019Smith is not in the lineup Saturday against the Giants, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After posting a .222 OPS in his first 11 games in September, Smith has a 1.012 mark over his last five contests. Russell Martin starts behind the plate in his absence.
Sep 25 2019Smith is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Smith has started six of the past seven games, going 2-for-20 with a home run and three RBI over that stretch. Russell Martin is starting at backstop and hitting eighth in this one.
Sep 25 2019Smith (6-0) picked up the win against the Rockies on Wednesday after tossing a perfect inning with three strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Smith came into a tied ninth inning and retired the side in order with three consecutive punch outs. Teammate Jaylin Davis then hit a walkoff home run in the bottom of the frame to gift Smith and the Giants with the win. Across 63 games this season, the 30-year-old closer has tallied 34 saves with a 2.76 ERA and 1.03 WHIP.
Sep 22 2019Smith went 1-for-3 with a solo homer and a walk in a win over the Rockies on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Smith's solo shot in the eighth inning snapped a streak of 13 games without going deep. It was also his first extra-base hit in a brutal September in which the 24-year-old has gone 5-for-44 (.114) with 14 strikeouts. Despite the rough month, Smith remains one of the better hitting backstops in the National League, posting a .242/.318/.561 slash line with 14 homers and 37 RBI in only 50 games this season.
Sep 22 2019Smith allowed one hit but struck out two during the ninth inning to post a save in a 4-1 victory against the Giants on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since returning from back tightness a week ago, Smith has posted 3.1 shutout innings with two saves and five strikeouts. Dating back to Aug. 24, he's converted five straight save chances and allowed three runs in 9.2 innings. Overall, he is 5-0 with 34 saves, 2.84 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 92 strikeouts in 63.1 innings this season.
Sep 15 2019Smith walked one batter and struck out one in a scoreless inning Sunday, earning the save over Miami. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Smith hadn't appeared in a game since Sep. 6 due to some back tightness but came back strong Sunday with a scoreless frame. He's now 33-for-37 in save chances with a 2.95 ERA in 2019.
Sep 14 2019Smith is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Smith has been getting every other day off and that trend will continue; he gives way to Russell Martin behind the plate after going 0-for-4 in Friday's series opener. He was off to a blistering start in the majors, but Smith is just 3-for-27 to begin September. Ideally, he'll be able to make some adjustments before the end of the regular season.
Sep 14 2019Smith (back) threw Saturday and hasn't been ruled out for Saturday's game against the Marlins, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Smith hasn't pitched since last Friday. Previous reports held that he wouldn't be back until Tuesday at the earliest, but it's possible that he'll wind up ahead of that schedule.
Sep 13 2019Smith (back) played catch from flat ground Friday, Amy Gutierrez of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Smith was initially hoping to pitch over the weekend, but it appears as though he'll be held out of game action until Tuesday. He's been nursing back inflammation since Saturday.
Sep 12 2019Smith is not in the lineup Thursday against the Orioles, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Smith will sit after starting the past two games and going 1-for-7 with a walk and two strikeouts. Russell Martin is starting at catcher and hitting ninth in his stead in this one.
Sep 11 2019Smith (back) will resume throwing Thursday and if all goes well could pitch this weekend against the Marlins, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Smith hasn't pitched since Saturday as he battles a bout of back inflammation, but it looks as though he's nearing his return. The left-hander figures to receive a status update after Thursday's throwing session.
Sep 10 2019Smith (back) remains unavailable to pitch Tuesday, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Smith hasn't taken the mound since allowing one run while recording his 32nd save Friday due to the back inflammation. It unclear how long the left-hander is expected to remain sidelined. The Giants are currently without their top relievers with Tony Watson (wrist) likely done for the season and Reyes Moronta (shoulder) on the 60-day injured list.
Sep 8 2019Smith is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants, J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Smith is merely receiving some routine maintenance after three consecutive starts behind the plate. Backup catcher Russell Martin will form a battery with starting pitcher Julio Urias in the series finale.
Sep 7 2019Smith went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles in Saturday's 1-0 loss to the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Smith accounted for exactly half of the Dodgers' hits in the pitchers' duel. The catcher is now batting .273/.345/.641 with 13 homers, 34 RBI and 23 runs scored across 145 plate appearances this year.
Sep 7 2019Smith was unavailable for Saturday's game against the Dodgers due to back tightness, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The back tightness explains why the left-hander wasn't utilized during Saturday's 1-0 win over the Dodgers, a game in which the Giants used six relievers. Smith allowed a run while recording his 32nd save Friday, but it's unclear if the back issue was present for that outing. The Giants didn't indicate whether the 30-year-old would be available for Sunday's series finale.
Sep 6 2019Smith earned a ninth-inning save against the Dodgers on Friday, allowing one run on one hit and a walk while striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Smith came into the ninth inning tasked with protecting a 5-3 lead. It took him 20 pitches, but he got it done. Smith started off strong by striking out Cody Bellinger, then causing David Freese to pop out. The left-hander faltered by giving up a solo home run to A.J. Pollock and a walk to Russell Martin. Luckily, he sent his namesake Will Smith down on strikes to finish things off for good. Smith has racked up 32 saves across 58 appearances this season with a 3.00 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 87:19 K:BB.
Sep 4 2019Smith struck out three and walked two across 1.1 scoreless innings to earn the save Wednesday against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Smith entered the game in the eighth inning and stranded the tying run at third base by striking out Paul Goldschmidt. He surrendered two walks in the ninth frame but ultimately recovered to earn his 31st save of the season. He's been one of the more consistent closers throughout the campaign, maintaining a 2.90 ERA and 1.03 WHIP with 85 strikeouts across 59 frames.
Sep 3 2019Smith isn't starting Tuesday's game against the Rockies, J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Smith is in line for the night off after going 1-for-4 with a walk and a run scored in Monday's series opener. Russell Martin will handle the catching duties and bat eighth.

Jul 25 2018Smith picked up his fourth save Tuesday, striking out two in a scoreless inning against the Mariners.Smith ran into little trouble, striking out the first two batters he faced before getting a pop up to send down Seattle on just nine pitches. It's the first save for any San Francisco pitcher in nearly three weeks, but with Hunter Strickland (finger) sidelined, Smith appears to have emerged as the preferred option to close out games over Sam Dyson, Mark Melancon and Tony Watson. He's now a perfect 4-for-4 in saves since taking over that role, and sports a sterling 1.45 ERA and 0.84 WHIP on the season.
Jul 12 2018Smith went 3-for-4 with a home run, double and three RBI for Double-A Tulsa in its 9-5 loss to Northwest Arkansas on Wednesday. It's the fourth consecutive game with a home run for Smith, who upped his season count to 16, placing him in a tie for second place in the Texas League. Nine of those long balls have come in his last 14 games, with Smith slashing an otherworldly .447/.542/1.128 over that span. The 23-year-old has been sharing time at Tulsa this season with the Dodgers' top catching prospect, Keibert Ruiz, with Smith receiving starts at third base and designated hitter on days when he's not catching.
Jul 6 2018Smith got the save against the Cardinals on Friday, striking out one without allowing a baserunner in a scoreless ninth inning to close out San Francisco's 3-2 victory. It's been an uncertain closer situation in San Francisco, but Smith is certainly making a case that he deserves to be the primary option. This clean effort marked his third straight conversion, and he's boasting dominant ratios through his 25.1 innings, with a 1.07 ERA and a 0.67 WHIP to go along with a sterling 35:7 K:BB. The presence of Sam Dyson, Mark Melancon and Tony Watson still complicates matters, but if Smith keeps making the most of his opportunities with outings like this, he could eventually separate himself from the competition.
Jul 1 2018Smith recorded the final out of the game via strikeout to earn his second save Sunday against the Diamondbacks.Mark Melancon was called upon to start the ninth inning with the Giants up 9-5, but Smith entered the game with the tying run at the plate after Melancon allowed three hits and an earned run. This marked Smith's second consecutive save chance -- he converted both successfully -- and with both Sam Dyson and Melancon struggling with inconsistency, he may now be the frontrunner for save opportunities. However, the situation remains muddled as Tony Watson could enter the picture as a fourth option to man the ninth inning.
Jun 29 2018Smith got the save against the Diamondbacks on Friday, striking out two without allowing a baserunner over a scoreless ninth inning to lock down San Francisco's 2-1 victory. It was only the second save opportunity of the year for the right-hander, and he came through with his first conversion in this drama-free effort. He's having a great season, as this performance gives him a 1.13 ERA and a microscopic 0.71 WHIP to go along with 33 strikeouts over 24 innings. The Giants' closer situation is a logjam at the moment, however, with Hunter Strickland (hand) sidelined and Tony Watson, Sam Dyson and Mark Melancon all in the mix to soak up opportunities. With that in mind, it's simply hard to say how frequently Smith will be seeing chances like this at this point, although he will make a case for more if he continues to post these dominant ratios.
Jun 20 2018Smith walked one and struck out three over 1.1 scoreless innings in Tuesday's 6-3 win over Miami. The 28-year-old fired a scoreless eighth inning and recorded another out in the ninth before giving way to Sam Dyson for the save. Fellow southpaw Tony Watson was given the night off for rest, which is why Smith was allowed to get to Derek Dietrich in the final frame. The veteran reliever has been dominant in his return from Tommy John surgery, posting a 0.90 ERA with 27 strikeouts over 20 innings. Giants' closer Hunter Strickland underwent hand surgery Tuesday, but Sam Dyson and Tony Watson figure to see the bulk of save opportunities (based on matchups), keeping Smith in a setup role for the time being.
Jun 15 2018Smith has gone 9-for-36 with two home runs, four RBI, seven walks and 11 strikeouts in 11 games since returning from the 7-day disabled list. After a four-week stint on the DL, Smith returned June 3 and has since hit .250/.372/.444 -- numbers pretty well in line with his season stats (.254/.345/.446). The 32nd overall pick in 2016, Smith has made 15 starts behind the plate this year and 14 at third base.
Jun 13 2018Smith struck out the side over a scoreless inning in Tuesday's 3-1 loss to Miami.Outside of one bad outing against the Cubs on May 25, Smith has been untouchable since his return from Tommy John surgery this season. The 28-year-old now owns a 1.13 ERA with 19 strikeouts over 16 innings. The only downside regarding Smith's numbers from a fantasy perspective is his lack of holds (three) and saves (zero) while being slotted being Tony Watson and Hunter Strickland on the Giants' bullpen depth chart.
May 24 2018Smith tossed 1.1 clean innings in Wednesday's loss to the Astros.Smith has been dominant since returning from Tommy John surgery May 2. The 28-year-old has posted an 11:2 K:BB ratio without allowing a run over 9.1 innings. Tony Watson is still the club's primary setup man, but Smith appears to be right behind him in the bullpen pecking order.
May 9 2018Smith was placed on the 7-day disabled list at Double-A Tulsa on Tuesday due to an undisclosed injury, Eric Stephen of TrueBlueLA.com reports.Smith, who is hitting .255/.333/.447 with four home runs across 105 plate appearances with Tulsa, last appeared in a game Sunday, so that's presumably when he acquired the injury. Assuming the setback isn't a significant one, Smith should be back in action in the minimum amount of time or shortly after. Tulsa promoted Hamlet Marte from High-A Rancho Cucamonga to add more catching depth in the meantime.
May 2 2018Smith (elbow) was reinstated from the disabled list prior to Wednesday's game against San Diego, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.Smith appeared in six minor-league rehab outings over the past couple weeks and looks fully operation after undergoing Tommy John surgery in March of 2017. The left-hander figures to serve out of high-leverage spots within the Giants' bullpen after posting a 3.35 ERA and 1.21 WHIP over 40.1 innings of work split between San Francisco and Milwaukee in 2016. In a corresponding move, the club optioned Austin Slater to Triple-A.
Apr 29 2018Smith will be activated off the 10-day disabled list Wednesday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.Smith has nearly completed his rehab assignment, pitching both Wednesday and Thursday at Triple-A Sacramento without any setbacks. He'll come off the DL on Wednesday and should fall into a setup role out of the bullpen.
Apr 23 2018Smith (elbow) is scheduled to pitch Wednesday and Thursday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.Since starting his rehab assignment at High-A San Jose in mid-April, Smith has reached Triple-A Sacramento where he's thrown three perfect innings over three games. In that time he's struck out six batters. The Giants current plan is for Smith to pitch Wednesday and Thursday before getting some rest and facing a couple more batters Sunday. Barring any setbacks, it's expected that Smith will come off the DL shortly after.
Apr 21 2018Manager Bruce Bochy said that Smith (elbow) is "knocking on the door" of returning from the disabled list, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.Smith has made four rehab appearances in the past week, allowing two runs and striking out seven batters in that time. It's been a long road back from Tommy John surgery he underwent in March of 2017, but it seems like he could be back in the next week or two given how frequently he's been able to pitch.
Apr 13 2018Smith (elbow) threw 17 pitches over one inning during his rehab appearance with High A-San Jose on Friday, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic Bay Area reports. The rehab appearance is Smith's first after undergoing Tommy John in March 2017. The 28-year-old is scheduled to appear again Sunday in San Jose before moving up to Triple-A Sacramento, and is still expected to return from the disabled list around May 1.
Apr 11 2018Smith will join High-A San Jose for a rehab stint Thursday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.Smith is working his way back to the big leagues after undergoing Tommy John surgery in March 2017. He's been throwing in live batting practice and extended spring training and will get his first taste of real game action after joining San Jose. He remains on schedule for a May 1 return to the big leagues and will join a bullpen which could still be without closer Mark Melancon (elbow), though Hunter Strickland seems to have the interim job locked down.
Apr 9 2018Smith (elbow) threw 13 pitches in an extended spring training game Monday, Amy Gutierrez of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.Smith is targeting a May 1 return, as the southpaw has been rehabbing his elbow after undergoing Tommy John surgery in March of 2017. Barring any setbacks, an early May activation from the DL looks to be obtainable, although the Giants will likely continue being cautious with him.
Apr 3 2018Smith (elbow) has been throwing live batting practice sessions, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.Smith is working his way back from Tommy John surgery which
Mar 29 2018Smith (elbow) was placed on the 10-day disabled list. This was a forgone conclusion. Smith is on track for a return on May 1, and he may join a shorthanded bullpen, as closer Mark Melancon hit the DL with a flexor strain in his throwing elbow. That said, Sam Dyson, Hunter Strickland and Tony Watson figure to be ahead of Smith in the pecking order for saves if Melancon's injury leads to an extended absence.
Mar 24 2018Smith (elbow) remains on track to rejoin the Giants on May 1, Amy Gutierrez of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.Smith continues to slowly work his way back from Tommy John surgery he underwent prior to the 2017 season. The southpaw is scheduled to throw three rounds of live batting practice April 1, 5 and 9 before embarking on rehab assignment and ultimately rejoining the big club. Once healthy, Smith should quickly work his way back into a high-leverage relief role as the team's top lefty.
Mar 12 2018Smith was moved from Dodgers spring training to minor-league camp Monday, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.Smith's bat was fairly quiet this spring, as he went 3-for-14 (.214) at the plate and struck out five times. Smith figures to spend much of the 2018 season at Double-A Tulsa, as a hand injury limited him to just one game there following his promotion from High-A Rancho Cucamonga last season.
Feb 13 2018Smith (elbow) is reportedly being very cautious with his rehab and may not be ready for Opening Day, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. The southpaw resumed throwing back in September and hasn't experienced any setbacks in his rehab. However, the Giants don't want to rush him back too quickly and aggravate his injury, so although there doesn't seem to be any issue, it may put his availability for Opening Day in jeopardy. Given the circumstances, it seems like more of a semantic issue than anything, as taking things a bit slower would probably delay his return by just a week or two at most. A firmer timetable will likely emerge as spring training progresses.
Feb 13 2018Manager Bruce Bochy said Smith (elbow) is targeting May 1 as his return date, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.Smith is reportedly being very cautious with his rehab from Tommy John surgery, and his freshly determined timetable lines him up to miss the first month of the season. While he hasn't suffered any setbacks since picking up a throwing program back in September, the Giants don't want to risk him aggravating the injury by rushing him back too quickly. Smith should slide back in as the team's top bullpen lefty when he's finally healthy.
Jan 30 2018Smith has been invited to the Dodgers' major-league camp this spring, J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News reports.Smith will join fellow catching prospect Keibert Ruiz at big-league camp, though both backstops are expected to open the 2018 campaign in the minors given the trio of catchers already on the Dodgers' 40-man roster. The 22-year-old spent most of his season with High-A Rancho Cucamonga, hitting .232/.355/.448 with 11 homers in 72 games before earning a promotion to Double-A Tulsa. He appeared in just one game for the Drillers, as he was hit by a pitch on the hand and forced to miss the remainder of the season. Smith should return to Tulsa to start the season.
Jan 12 2018Smith (elbow) agreed to a one-year, $2.5 million contract with the Giants on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.Smith's salary will hold firm after he missed the entire 2017 season following Tommy John surgery. The 28-year-old resumed throwing last September and is expected to be ready for Opening Day. He will likely serve as the top lefty in the San Francisco bullpen.
Dec 12 2017Smith (elbow) is expected to be ready for Opening Day assuming he stays on schedule in his rehab, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.Smith missed all of 2017 after undergoing Tommy John surgery in March. He was able to resume throwing in September, and barring any setbacks, it seems like the left-handed reliever will be ready to go by the start of next season. Smith has proven to be a reliable bullpen option in years past, and should work as one of the Giants' top setup men in 2018, assuming he's healthy.
Nov 4 2017Smith (elbow) was removed from the 60-day DL on Friday.Smith underwent Tommy John surgery in March, but was able to start throwing again in September, which marked the first step in his recovery. It's still expected that the reliever will miss a little time at the beginning of the 2018 season, but Smith still has a long ways to go before returning to action.
Sep 17 2017Smith (elbow) was able to play catch Sunday, Andrew Baggarly of The San Jose Mercury News reports. It's great news for the southpaw reliever, as this marks the first time that Smith has been able to play catch since undergoing Tommy John surgery in March. The 28-year-old obviously still has a ways to go in his rehab, but this is certainly a positive first step in his lengthy recovery.
Jul 20 2017Smith (hand) was hit by a pitch during his debut with Double-A Tulsa on July 10 and is out at least another four weeks, Kyle Glaser of Baseball America reports. It wasn't exactly the dream promotion that most prospects imagine when they get moved up. Smith was hit twice in the game, with the second one proving costly as it fractured his hand. Before the promotion, Smith was hitting .232 with 11 home runs with High-A Rancho Cucamonga.
Jul 11 2017Smith, 22, hit .232/.355/.448 with 11 home runs, 43 RBI and six steals in 72 games at High-A Rancho Cucamonga before being promoted to Double-A.Smith is a catcher by trade, but the Dodgers have been trying him out at other positions in order to keep his bat in the lineup. Though the batting average is a bit low, Smith has shown some pop along with the ability to work the count.
Apr 24 2017Smith homered twice Sunday for High-A Rancho Cucamonga against Inland Empire. He also started at second base.Rancho Cucamonga is carrying three catchers on their active roster right now, affording them the luxury of moving Smith, a first-round pick in 2016. Smith is now hitting .333/.421/.625 in 58 plate appearances.
Apr 2 2017Smith (elbow) was placed on the 60-day disabled list Sunday, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.Smith underwent Tommy John surgery in late-May and will miss the entire 2017 season. He'll hopefully be ready to return to live action in early 2018.
Mar 30 2017Smith (elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery Thursday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.Although it's very early, the current assessment is that Smith will be back in the majors in May of 2018. More information regarding his return should become available as he gets further in the rehab process.
Mar 24 2017Smith (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery next week, Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area Sports reports. It appears to be the worst case scenario for Smith, who has been dealing with elbow inflammation throughout spring camp. The left-hander remains optimistic the procedure will allow him to be ready for the beginning of the 2018 season and says he didn't want to risk a failed rehab process, which could have cost him even more time. Smith joined the Giants late last season, compiling a 2.95 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 26 games. Look for Josh Osich and Steven Okert to compete for the role of top left-hander in the San Francisco bullpen.
Mar 23 2017Smith (elbow) is considering undergoing Tommy John surgery after going for a second opinion on his pitching arm this week, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.According to Schulman, Smith will meet with his agent Friday before making a final decision on his course of action. An MRI earlier in the week revealed that Smith had a sprained UCL in his left elbow and now it appears that a Tommy John procedure could be imminent. Smith was acquired by the Giants at the trade deadline and was strong down the stretch with a 1.78 FIP and 26 strikeouts over 18.1 innings. If the Giants lose Smith for a significant amount of time, they'd be missing a significant piece of their bullpen puzzle. More information on Smith's course of action should be made available over the weekend.
Mar 22 2017Smith is scheduled to receive a second opinion on his sprained UCL from Dr. Neal El-Attrache, Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area reports.Smith was diagnosed with a sprain and a strain in his throwing elbow earlier in the week, but he's headed for a second opinion before making his final decision on surgery. With Tommy John surgery as a possibility, it will be a situation to monitor and more should be known about his decision after the checkup. Either way, it seems Smith is set to miss extended time to start the season.
Mar 21 2017Smith (elbow) has been diagnosed with a sprain and a strain in his throwing elbow after undergoing a second MRI on Tuesday, Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area reports. This is less than encouraging news for Smith, who is hoping to avoid any sort of surgery to repair his injured elbow. The lefty specialist still has not made any final decisions, but Tommy John surgery is still a definite option. More updates should become available in the coming days.
Mar 21 2017Smith (elbow) will head back to San Francisco on Tuesday for a second opinion, CSN Bay Area's Alex Pavlovic reports. There is concern about the integrity of his UCL after Monday's MRI, and it sounds like Tommy John surgery is a possibility. The Giants are hoping that Smith just needs treatment and rehab, which would still likely sideline him for the first couple months of the season. Steven Okert and Josh Osich project to open the year as the Giants' two lefties out of the bullpen.
Mar 20 2017Smith will undergo an MRI on his elbow after he felt something during Monday's spring game, Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area reports. This isn't tough news for Smith, who was only in his second appearance back after being sidelined for much of spring with elbow inflammation. Given the time of spring, it seems likely the southpaw won't be ready for Opening Day. His status will be updated after the MRI results are known.
Mar 20 2017Smith left Monday's spring game early with a trainer, Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area reports.Smith deflected a grounder with his bare hand, but was able to stay on and record two outs before being pulled in the middle of an at-bat. It's not clear if the injury is related to the ball that ricocheted off his hand or his elbow that sidelined him for the first three weeks of spring games. The southpaw should be considered day-to-day until the Giants release more about his injury.
Mar 18 2017Smith (elbow) fired a scoreless innings Friday, allowing two hits in a loss to the Rockies. The veteran lefty made his return from a minor elbow injury that kept him out of the first few weeks of spring action. Smith didn't experience any setbacks, and the club feels they have enough time to get him up to speed before Opening Day. He will serve as the Giants' left-handed setup man this season.
Mar 17 2017Smith will make his spring debut Friday after missing time with elbow inflammation, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.Smith's injury was never considered overly serious, but the club decided to take it slow with the southpaw during an extended spring training. Manager Bruce Bochy said he wanted Smith to get in six spring training appearances before the season, and with the 27-year-old back in the lineup, he still has plenty of time to reach that mark. Barring any setbacks, Smith should open the season as the left-handed setup man for the Giants.
Mar 14 2017Smith (elbow) is progressing well from the elbow inflammation he experienced earlier in camp. He threw to hitters Monday, and could make his Cactus League debut as early as Friday, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.Manager Bruce Bochy said that he wanted to give Smith six spring training appearances, and there is still plenty of time left for him to stick to his original plan. Assuming he doesn't suffer a setback, the southpaw will open the year as the Giants' left-handed setup man.
Mar 7 2017Smith (elbow) is throwing without pain and expects to return to throwing off of a mound next week, according to The Mercury News.Smith's elbow injury was never considered serious, so the club has simply been taking it slow with their left-handed setup man during an extended spring training. Barring a setback, he should be a go for Opening Day.
Mar 2 2017Smith (elbow) has been throwing and is on track with his recovery from minor elbow inflammation, according to Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area.Smith had been shut down earlier this spring after he experienced some inflammation in his left elbow. It was more of a case of the Giants taking extra precaution during a longer spring training than usual rather than a sign of a serious injury. It is unclear when Giants' left-handed setup man will make his Cactus League debut, but the team still plans on getting him in six games before the regular season kicks off.
Feb 26 2017Manager Bruce Bochy said that Smith (elbow) is a day or two away from throwing off flat ground, CSN Bay Area reports.Smith was experiencing elbow inflammation last week, but the MRI results came back negative and the Giants appear to be playing it safe with their left-handed setup man. The club has already set a plan for him to throw six times during this WBC-extended spring training, so barring any setbacks, Smith should be ready for Opening Day.
Feb 22 2017Smith will be temporarily shut down with elbow inflammation, Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area Sports reports. The positive news is that the MRI came back clean and manager Bruce Bochy is confident his reliever will be ready for opening day. The Giants plan to have Smith make six appearances before the season opener, but will likely exercise caution with the lefty. The 27-year-old made 26 appearances with San Francisco after being acquired at the trade deadline, posting a 2.95 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP.
Feb 15 2017Smith is a lock to serve as the Giants' left-handed setup man, CSN Bay Area reports. No surprises here, as this was the role the Giants envisioned for Smith when they dealt their top pitching prospect for him at the deadline last year. He will enter games in the seventh and eighth innings when opposing lineups are more lefty-heavy than usual. This should give Smith a fair share of hold opportunities for a team that is expected to be competitive this season.
Jan 13 2017Smith agreed to a one-year deal with the Giants on Friday, avoiding arbitration, CSN Bay Area's Alex Pavlovic reports. The terms of the agreement were not disclosed. He saw some looks late last season as a potential closer for the Giants, but will move back to a more comfortable role setting up closer Mark Melancon in 2017. Smith will become a free agent after the 2019 season.
Sep 10 2016Smith could be in the mix for save opportunities as the Giants switch to a closer by committee.Smith was acquired by the Giants to serve as their left-handed setup man, but with Santiago Casilla being removed from the closer role Friday, every late-inning reliever could potentially see save opportunities. The lefty has to be considered lower on the totem pole given his sub-par performance since joining San Francisco (4.63 ERA), but a situation may arise where the Giants need to get multiple left-handed bats out in the ninth and could turn to Smith.
Aug 10 2016Smith picked up his first hold with his new club, striking out both batters he faced in Wednesday's 1-0 win over Miami.Smith has struggled since coming over from Milwaukee at the trade deadline, surrendering four runs in two innings of work prior to Wednesday. If he strings together a couple more solid outings, then the Giants can deploy him as their left-handed setup man, the role they envision for Smith when they acquired him.
Aug 3 2016Smith made his first appearance with the Giants on Tuesday, giving up two runs on two hits over one-third of an inning in a loss to the Phillies.Smith entered a tie game in the eighth inning and gave up back-to-back hits after striking out Freddy Galvis. He was lifted for Sergio Romo who promptly allowed both runners to score as well as three runs of his own. It wasn't the debut Smith or the Giants were hoping for, but he should continue to appear late in games for the club down the stretch. Moving from a losing club in Milwaukee to a team in the playoff race should increase his hold opportunities for those in leagues that count that category.
Aug 1 2016Smith has been traded to the Giants, Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports. The 27-year-old owns a 3.68 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 22 innings for the Brewers. The reliever will join other left-handers Javier Lopez and Matt Reynolds in the Giants bullpen. The Brewers will receive right-handed pitching prospect Phil Bickford and catcher Andrew Susac from the Giants.
Jul 26 2016Smith has given up 11 runs this year, eight earned, striking out 17 over 18.2 innings of work. The 27-year-old lefty allowed five of those runs against the Cubs in his last outing on July 24. Besides the blemish, Smith has been solid as a setup man since starting his season in June, after suffering a knee injury in the offseason.
Jun 15 2016Smith allowed his first run of the season Tuesday and took the loss as the Brewers fell to the Giants.Smith did not allow a run in his first six outings after making his season debut June 2, but he allowed three runners to reach base Tuesday and threw two wild pitches, which culminated in him picking up the "L." Smith still owns a stellar 0.90 WHIP in his seven appearances with the Brewers this season, but he has not proven to be a threat to closer Jeremy Jeffress' job as of yet, working mainly in the seventh and eighth innings.
Jun 1 2016Manager Craig Counsell said that once Smith knocks some rust off he will be an option to close games along with Jeremy Jeffress, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Tom Haudricourt reports. The original plan back before Smith got injured was to use a tandem closer attack, presumably playing the matchups with Smith getting the looks against lefty-heavy spots in the opposing lineup. That plan appears to be back on, at least once Smith shows that he's back to prior form. Smith was going to be useful even if he wasn't getting saves just based on the strikeouts and ratios he is capable of posting, and now it sounds like there should be some saves to go along with the skills.
May 31 2016Smith (knee) was reinstated from the 15-day DL on Tuesday.Smith should quickly ascend to a late-inning role for the Brewers, likely setting up Jeremy Jeffress. When healthy, he has the potential to be useful in deeper leagues, even if he's not getting saves, thanks to stellar ratios and strikeout totals. Smith also figures to be in the mix if they Brewers ever have to make a change in the ninth inning, and he will likely be showcased as trade bait this summer.
May 30 2016Smith (knee) is expected to be activated from the DL during the upcoming four-game series with the Phillies that begins Thursday, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Smith recently moved his rehab to Double-A Biloxi, where he struck out one batter in a clean inning, throwing 12 of 16 total pitches for strikes. He's now made three rehab appearances, allowing one hit and no walks with five strikeouts over four innings. Smith will soon return to the Milwaukee bullpen, though it appears Jeremy Jeffress will retain the closer's role for now. If Smith can string together a few quality appearances, he could find himself as a trade chip for the rebuilding Brewers.
May 27 2016Smith (knee) is headed to Biloxi and it's expected that he'll be ready to return before the Brewers' series in Philadelphia next week at the latest, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.Once Smith returns, it's expected that he'll quickly return to a role in the late innings for the Brewers, likely setting up closer Jeremy Jeffress.
May 27 2016Smith (knee) is planning on playing in back-to-back games for Triple-A Colorado Springs before rejoining the Brewers, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Smith has pitched twice for High-A Brevard County during his rehab assignment, compiling three shutout innings while only allowing one baserunner and striking out four. The bigger news is that the 26-year-old reliever hasn't suffered any setbacks and is on track to join the Brewers in June. Once Smith returns to the fold, he will most likely begin his 2016 campaign as a setup man out of the bullpen.
May 25 2016Smith (knee) threw a scoreless inning with High-A Brevard County on Tuesday in his first rehab appearance.Smith allowed a hit, struck out a batter, and threw 15 pitches (nine strikes) in Tuesday's outing. More importantly, no setbacks were reported following the contest, so his rehab process remains on track. He figures to throw several more times in the minors and is on track to join the Brewers in June.
May 22 2016Smith (knee) will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Brevard County on Tuesday, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Smith has not encountered any setbacks while recovering from a torn LCL in his right knee, and he has been cleared for game action after throwing a batting practice session Saturday without issue. He has been sidelined since late March, so he will likely throw several times in the minors before rejoining the Brewers at some point in June. Smith was set to share the closer's duties with Jeremy Jeffress prior to his injury, but Jeffress has thrown the ball well as the primary closer, so Smith will likely open in a setup/situational role when he is back on the big league roster.
May 18 2016Smith (knee) is set to throw live BP on Saturday, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Smith has thrown successful bullpen sessions and has completed PFP and agility drills as he continues his recovery from a torn LCL. The next step in the 26-year-old's rehab process is throwing live batting practice and then completing an eventual rehab assignment. If he can complete those steps without any setbacks, he should still be in line for a return to the Brewers bullpen sometime in mid-June.
May 17 2016Smith (knee) practiced PFP and completed agility drills Tuesday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.Smith seems to be making steady progress in his recovery from a torn LCL. The left-hander is slated to throw a 45-pitch bullpen session Wednesday and then move onto facing live hitters. Following all of that, he should be primed for a rehab assignment, which keeps a mid-June return well within the realm of possibility.
May 15 2016Smith (knee) threw another successful bullpen session Sunday, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. This is the second bullpen session in three days for Smith, who increased his pitch count from 25 to 35 pitches. According to the report, the quantity of pitches thrown at 100 percent was also increased. Although Smith is likely little more than a trade chip at this point, his progress of late helps makes a mid-June return a more realistic possibility.
May 13 2016Smith (knee) completed a 25-pitch bullpen session Friday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. The mound session was Smith's first since suffering a torn LCL in his right knee while attempting to take a shoe off in the clubhouse in late March. He decided to forego surgery and take the rest and rehab route, and while Smith seems happy with his progress to this point, he's not out of the woods yet by any means. The lefty will continue to build up strength for now with eye toward ultimately heading out for a rehab assignment.
May 12 2016Smith will throw off a mound Friday for the first time since injuring his knee this spring, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Smith has been brought along slowly since tearing the LCL in his right knee this spring, but he will now get a chance to see how his knee feels while throwing from an elevated position. Smith is not entirely in the clear just yet in regards to surgery on his knee, but if all goes well Friday and in his next few sessions, there will be plenty of reason to believe he will avoid going under the knife and pitch for the Brewers at some point this summer.
May 6 2016Smith (knee) still does not think he will require surgery, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. The team allowed Smith to take the rest and rehab route with the hope of getting him back sooner, and the lefty seems confident it was the right call. He's still without any sort of set timetable and one likely won't take shape until he is cleared to get back onto the mound for bullpen sessions. Smith has been throwing on flat ground in recent weeks.
Apr 24 2016Smith (knee) was able to do some throwing in the outfield Sunday morning.Smith's rehab from right knee surgery is still in its infancy, but it's an encouraging sign that he's able to begin a throwing program to some extent. He's still unlikely to return to action until late May or early June at the soonest.
Apr 2 2016Smith (knee) was placed on the 15-day disabled list. This comes as no surprise as surgery was being considered until a few days ago. His injury paves the way for Jeremy Jeffress to begin the season as Milwaukee's closer.
Mar 29 2016Smith will not undergo surgery on his injured knee at this time, but he will be reevaluated in six weeks, MLB.com's Adam McCalvy reports. The Brewers are hoping that Smith will be able to recover via the rest and rehab route, as going under the knife would guarantee he misses the majority of the season anyway. Smith is not out of the woods yet, but he will rest for three weeks and then play catch for three more, at which point the Brewers' medical staff will again decide whether or not he needs surgery. Either way, Smith is not likely to appear in a big league game before June, and he could still miss the entire season if it's decided down the road that a procedure is needed. With Smith sidelined, Jeremy Jeffress looks like the best bet to open the season as the Brewers' closer.
Mar 26 2016Manager Craig Counsell announced Saturday that Smith (knee) will miss "significant" time regardless of whether he undergoes surgery on his torn LCL, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. It was announced earlier Saturday that Smith had suffered a torn LCL in his right knee after something of a freak accident. There is still no word on whether he'll require surgery, but Counsell's comments suggest that Smith will miss a significant portion of the season. Expect him to start the season on the disabled list while Jeremy Jeffress is the odds-on favorite to be the Brewers' closer.
Mar 26 2016Smith said Saturday that he is dealing with a torn LCL in his right knee, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Smith reportedly suffered the injury while attempting to take a shoe off in the clubhouse this week. It has not yet been determined if he will need surgery to repair the tear, but he was spotted on crutches Saturday and had his leg immobilized, so it would appear he is dealing with a setback that could sideline him for a while. The Brewers figure to provide more details on Smith's status in the near future, but it does not seem likely he will be ready for Opening Day. If that indeed is the case, Jeremy Jeffress is the favorite to open the season as the Brewers' closer.
Mar 25 2016Smith has "concerning" swelling in his right knee and will be examined, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports.Smith has so far appeared in line to take at least a share of the Milwaukee closer job, but he will need a clean bill of health before hitting the field. If Smith has to miss any time, Jeremy Jeffress would be the favorite to land the closer job. Check back later for an update.
Mar 16 2016Manager Craig Counsell is not planning to name a closer prior to the beginning of the regular season, and will instead use both Smith and Jeremy Jeffress in save situations depending on matchups, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. It could certainly be argued that Smith has earned the closer's role with four dominant outings so far this spring, but Smith and Jeffress are clearly the Brewers' two most reliable relievers, and it appears Counsell wants to avoid locking them into specific roles so he can use both a bit more freely. With that being said, if either Smith or Jeffress separates himself once the real games begin, don't be surprised to see one of them take over the ninth-inning duties regularly.
Mar 14 2016Smith tossed a scoreless inning in Monday's exhibition game for the fourth time in four appearances this spring.Smith did not allow a baserunner Monday; and in fact, he has allowed just one runner to reach base all spring. It's not yet clear if he will open the season as the Brewers' closer, but his primary competition for the ninth inning role, Jeremy Jeffress (hamstring), who has not appeared in a game this spring, is set to make his debut soon. That will allow the Brewers to fully evaluate their options and decide if one pitcher or the other will open the season with the closer's job, or if Smith and Jeffress will share the duties.
Feb 21 2016Manager Craig Counsell announced Sunday that Smith will compete with Jeremy Jeffress in spring training for the Brewers' closer role, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Smith dominated opponents early in the season, posting a 1.87 ERA and accumulating 44 strikeouts over 33.2 innings prior to the 2015 All-Star break. He wore down a bit in the second half, but the strikeout totals (47 over 29.2 innings) remained. The fact that he's left-handed actually works as a bit of a disadvantage for his chances of becoming the closer, but he certainly has the stuff to earn the role. Even if Smith does take the job out of camp, the Brewers figure to be among the league's worst teams in 2016, which could limit his save opportunities.
Jan 15 2016Smith and the Brewers agreed to terms on a one-year, $1.475 million deal Friday, avoiding arbitration, Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports.Smith will return as arguably the Brewers' best reliever after posting a 2.70 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with 91 strikeouts in 63.1 innings as the setup man in 2015. With Francisco Rodriguez now in Detroit, Smith could be in line to step into a closing role.
Nov 18 2015Smith could be the favorite to close games for the Brewers in 2016 following Wednesday's trade that shipped Francisco Rodriguez to Detroit.Of course, the Brewers could trade Smith as well, as he will be arbitration eligible for the first time this winter. However, if they hold Smith, he is statistically the best reliever on the roster, and has the stuff to handle the ninth. He had a 2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 91 strikeouts in 63.1 innings as a setup man last year, so there is a lot to like here from a fantasy perspective if Smith is getting saves. Jeremy Jeffress and Corey Knebel could also be in the mix if the Brewers don't go with Smith in the ninth inning.
Aug 9 2015Smith earned his fifth win of the season, throwing a perfect inning with a strikeout in Sunday's victory over the Cardinals. After a pair of rocky appearances to close out July, Smith has bounced back with four strong appearances in a row, throwing 3.1 innings with seven strikeouts, no walks and one hit allowed over that span. His ERA is back down to 2.38 and he holds a 59:14 K:BB ratio on the season.
Jun 10 2015Smith will be reinstated from his suspension Thursday.Smith was caught using a foreign substance and originally suspended eight games before his appeal reduced it to six games. Neal Cotts took over as the top lefty out of the bullpen for the Brewers, but Smith is eligible to make an appearance Thursday against the Nationals.
Jun 5 2015Smith's suspension has been reduced from eight to six games, and he'll begin serving it Friday night.Smith, who was caught using a foreign substance, will be eligible to return for Thursday's game against the Nationals. In his absence, Neal Cotts will be the top lefty out of the Milwaukee bullpen.
May 30 2015Smith's appeal of his eight-game suspension will take place Monday, Fox Sports Wisconsin's Andrew Gruman reports.Upon the completion of the appeal he will begin serving whatever suspension is handed down. Look for him to be unavailable for all or most of next week.
May 22 2015Smith was handed an eight-game suspension, which he will appeal, for having a foreign substance on his arm while pitching in Thursday's game, MLB.com's Mark Bowman reports. He will get to keep pitching for now until the appeal is heard or dropped. Smith should be available for Friday's contest against the Braves considering he faced just one batter (plus one pitch) in Thursday's game.
May 4 2015Smith recorded just one out in Sunday's victory over the Cubs but picked up his first win of the season in the process.Smith was needed for the final out of the seventh inning in Sunday's game, and the Brewers were able to take and hold the lead after that, giving him his first win of 2015. Smith has allowed just two earned runs -- both in the same game -- over 8.2 innings in 12 appearances out of the Brewers' bullpen this season.
Apr 14 2015Smith has not allowed a run, let alone a baserunner, through four appearances out of the Brewers' bullpen.Opposing hitters have had a tough time with Smith, who has not allowed a hit while posting a 5:0 K:BB ratio through 2.2 innings. He tired a bit last season due to overuse, but manager Ron Roenicke does not appear concerned about burning him out, using Smith in four of the Brewers' first seven games. He is no better than second in line for saves behind closer Francisco Rodriguez, but he is the top left-hander out of the Brewers' bullpen.
Feb 26 2015Smith is expected to open the 2015 season sharing the setup duties for the Brewers with Jonathan Broxton, MLB.com's Adam McCalvy reports.Smith and Broxton will both be used to help get the ball to closer Francisco Rodriguez, who officially re-joined the Brewers on Thursday. Smith had dominant stretches last season and finished fourth in the league with 30 holds, but he seemed overworked at times while appearing in 78 games, so look for manager Ron Roenicke to be a little more conservative with him this time around.
Jul 20 2014Smith (back) will be available out of the bullpen Sunday, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Smith had been dealing with back spasms to start the second half of the season, but this appears to have cleared up. As usual, he'll take the hill in the eighth inning, setting up closer Francisco Rodriguez.
Jul 19 2014Smith, who was unavailable for Friday's game due to back spasms, expects to be back to normal by Sunday, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Smith said he's feeling much better Saturday, but stopped short of declaring himself ready to pitch. While it's unclear whether he will be available out of the bullpen Saturday night, it sounds like the lefty should be ready by the end of the weekend.
Jul 18 2014Smith was unavailable Friday night due to back spasms, Andrew Gruman of Fox Sports reports.Zach Duke was used in the eighth inning by the Brewers on Friday night as a result of Smith's absence. For now, Smith is considered day-to-day.
Jul 6 2014Smith allowed a go-ahead two-run homer to Jay Bruce in the eighth inning of Sunday's game against the Reds, picking up his second loss of the season.Smith has become manager Ron Roenicke's preferred setup option in his first season in Milwaukee, but he's begun to reveal some signs of strain with his workload starting to mount. He's been tacked for two runs in each of his last two outings, and has given up at least a hit or a walk in eight consecutive appearances. Sunday's showing was especially surprising in light of the incredible work Smith has done against lefties like Bruce, who are batting just .143 with a .213 on-base percentage against him in 2014.
Jun 17 2014Smith tossed a scoreless eighth inning in Monday's victory over the Diamondbacks.Smith has given up three earned runs over his last seven outings after giving up just one in his first 29 appearances, but he still has not given up more than one earned run in any game this season, and has tallied three holds and a win this month. Smith remains the Brewers' setup man in front of closer Francisco Rodriguez.
May 28 2014Smith struck out four of the five batters he faced during a scoreless 1.1 innings against the Orioles on Wednesday. After inheriting two baserunners from Brandon Kintzler, Smith was charged with an error on a failed pick-off attempt that enabled both runners to move into scoring position. He rebounded by striking out Chris Davis to finish the seventh inning before tossing a scoreless eighth. Smith has been outstanding in the Brewers' bullpen this season, and is making a case to be considered for the National League All-Star team.
Apr 21 2014Smith could be used in a save situation Monday with both closer Francisco Rodriguez and setup man Jim Henderson pitching each of the last three days.Smith has pitched two of the last three days himself, but with the Brewers' top two relievers likely unavailable Monday, either he or right-hander Tyler Thornburg could pick up a save against the Padres if the opportunity arises. Matchups would likely dictate who ultimately gets the nod, as both pitchers have been lights-out early this season. Smith has struck out 10 batters and has yet to give up a run through 10 appearances this season -- and he even picked up a one-out save two Sundays ago.
Apr 13 2014Smith picked up his first career save Sunday by striking out Pedro Alvarez to seal the Brewers' victory over the Pirates.Francisco Rodriguez had pitched on three consecutive days, plus the Brewers needed one out against Pirates lefty Pedro Alvarez, which made Smith the better situation choice for manager Ron Roenicke anyway. Smith has been sharp for the Brewers early on, and he should remain in a primary setup role in front of Rodriguez for the foreseeable future.
Apr 1 2014Smith tossed a scoreless eighth inning in the Brewers' season-opening victory over the Braves on Monday. He did not allow a runner to reach base and also recorded a strikeout.Smith was summoned to face the top three hitters in the Braves lineup -- which included lefties Jason Heyward and Freddie Freeman -- in his Brewers debut, and he responded by not letting a ball leave the infield. With Tom Gorzelanny (shoulder) on the disabled list, Smith will be the Brewers' top left-handed reliever early in the season.
Mar 16 2014Smith has given up just one run in 7.1 innings over five appearances this spring. He has given up nine hits but also owns a 9:0 K:BB ratio.Smith has thrown the ball well in his first spring with the Brewers, and he has not allowed a ball to leave the park. With Tom Gorzelanny (shoulder) on track to open the regular season on the disabled list, Smith will likely be the top left-hander in the Brewers' bullpen out of the gate.
Dec 5 2013The Royals traded Smith to the Brewers on Thursday in exchange for outfielder Norichika Aoki. The Brewers not only fill an immediate need in adding Smith, but they get a player who has some long-term upside as well. Last season with Kansas City, Smith held opposing southpaws to a .157/.204/.353 batting line, with an 11.6 K/9 and a 1.9 BB/9 overall. He'll likely only be a LOOGY out of the bullpen to begin with, but Smith has worked mostly as a starter in his professional career and could be stretched back out eventually.
Sep 16 2013Smith will replace Tim Collins as the primary left-handed bridge to closer Greg Holland, the Kansas City Star reports.Manager Ned Yost says that he's riding the hot arms right now and while Collins has pitched better as of late, Yost is more comfortable with the consistent command he's been getting from Smith this season. Yost also cited pitch selection as Smith's slider is more difficult for hitters to pick up. As a lefty, Smith might see mostly one-batter situations, but he could post a little bit more in value in leagues that count holds.
Sep 2 2013Smith was masterful in relief of Danny Duffy Monday, earning the win by holding the Mariners to just one hit in 4.1 shutout innings.Smith also struck out eight in the outing. Excluding a bad start against the Indians back in April, Smith has a 1.88 ERA this season. If the Royals need a spot starter this month Smith is a good candidate to get the assignment.
Aug 25 2013Smith was recalled from Triple-A Omaha on Sunday. With Luke Hochevar being placed on the paternity list to observe the birth of his child, Smith figures to work in long relief for the Royals if needed over the next three games. Smith has yo-yoed between both the majors and Triple-A this season, with Sunday's transaction marking his seventh call-up of the season.
Aug 20 2013Smith was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday, the Kansas City Star reports.Smith actually made an appearance during this particular stay in the majors, allowing one run on two hits and two walks, while striking out three in 2.2 innings Saturday in Detroit. However, following Justin Maxwell's reinstatement from the bereavement list, Smith will head back to Omaha, where he will supply long-relief depth, with the possibility for a spot start, if the Royals' rotation sustains an injury.
Aug 16 2013Smith will be recalled from Triple-A Omaha following Friday's doubleheader in Detroit, the Kansas City Star reports. The call-up marks Smith's sixth of the 2013 campaign, but he'll be available throughout the weekend versus the Tigers due to outfielder Justin Maxwell's placement on the bereavement list after Game 1 of the two-game set. While Smith did not make an appearance during his last stay with the Royals, he's posted a steady line in his seven MLB outings this season with a 1-1 record, 3.26 ERA, 0.897 WHIP, and 20:1 K:BB ratio in 19.1 innings.
Aug 12 2013Smith was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Monday.Smith did not make an appearance following his call-up Saturday but has posted a 1-1 record, 3.26 ERA, 0.879 WHIP, and 20:1 K:BB ratio in 19.1 innings across seven outings with the Royals this season. Expect him to provide long-relief depth, at the very least, for the remainder of 2013.
Aug 10 2013Smith was recalled from Triple-A Omaha on Saturday.Smith has been rather impressive in his seven appearances (one start) with the big club this season, putting up a 1-1 record, 3.26 ERA, 0.879 WHIP, and 20:1 K:BB ratio in 19.1 innings. Due to an opening in the rotation Monday, he could be in play for a spot start in the near future.
Aug 7 2013Smith was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Wednesday.Smith has shuttled between Omaha and Kansas City throughout the season, making seven appearances (one spot start) overall for the Royals. In those outings, he is 1-1 with a 3.26 ERA, 0.879 WHIP, and an impressive 20:1 K:BB ratio in 19.1 innings. He'll provide bullpen depth at a moment's notice, while likely returning to the majors when rosters expand in September.
Aug 4 2013The Royals recalled Smith from Triple-A Omaha on Sunday, Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports.Smith will join the Royals' pen after Wade Davis was placed on the emergency leave list Sunday.
Jul 8 2013Smith was sent down to Triple-A Omaha on Monday. After tossing 9.1 scoreless innings in his first four appearances following his June 25 call-up, the floodgates opened for Smith on Sunday, when he gave up three runs on five hits, including two homers, across three frames. While Louis Coleman was called up to take his spot, Smith will continue to provide organizational bullpen depth for the rest of the season.
Jun 25 2013Smith was recalled from Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday, the Kansas City Star reports.Smith was called up to replace the struggling Kelvin Herrera on the active roster. He previously made a start with the Royals this season that did not go very well back on April 28. This time he will return as a reliever for the Royals after allowing one run in 10.2 innings of relief with Triple-A Omaha since making the switch to the bullpen.
May 4 2013In his first start back since his brief trip to the majors, Smith tossed six shutout innings and allowed two hits and four walks with five strikeouts against Triple-A Memphis on Friday.Though Smith was charged with four runs over four innings during his spot start for the Royals, he was victimized by some poor defense which could have kept runners off the bases and runs off the board. But because you can't assume the double play, the runs were all earned. Despite the fact that the Royals have a number of capable starters in the bullpen, Smith could be a regular on the shuttle between Kansas City and Omaha especially with the number of games the Royals will have to make up this season. He's not really worth adding in fantasy leagues though.
Apr 28 2013Smith went just four innings while giving up four earned runs on seven hits in Sunday's loss to the Indians in the second game of their doubleheader. He struck out five.Smith, who was called up prior to Sunday's doubleheader, and is likely headed back to Triple-A Omaha, needed 77 pitches to get through four innings against the Indians. He'll provide pitching depth for the Royals in Omaha until he hopefully finds his way back to the big leagues later in the year.
Apr 27 2013The Royals recalled Smith from Triple-A Omaha after Saturday's game, the Kansas City Star reports. The Royals called him up in advance of Sunday's double-header, of which Smith is slated to start the second game. The team can carry 26 players because of the double-header, so there was no subsequent roster move. However, expect Smith to re-join Omaha on Sunday evening.
Apr 27 2013Smith will start Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Indians, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.Following the postponement of Friday's game, Smith will earn a spot start, as the Royals do not desire interrupting their current rotation. In four starts at Triple-A Omaha this season, he's 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA, 1.273 WHIP, and 31:6 K:BB ratio in 22 innings. He'll look to extend that success to his first major league start of 2013.
Apr 21 2013Smith was recalled from Triple-A Omaha on Sunday. Both teams are allowed a 26th player for the doubleheader, so Smith will be available as an extra bullpen arm Sunday before heading back to Omaha. Smith experienced little success in 16 starts with the Royals last season, turning in a 5.32 ERA and 1.60 WHIP and a 59:33 K/BB ratio.
Apr 20 2013The Royals plan to recall Smith in time for Saturday's double-header against the Red Sox, Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports. With a twin billing looming Sunday, Smith will likely be recalled for bullpen depth. He may head back down shortly thereafter.
Mar 18 2013Smith was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Monday, Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports. In 16 starts for the Royals last season, Smith went 6-9 with a 5.32 ERA and a 5.9 K/9. He performed admirably while in big-league camp this spring (two earned runs, 10 strikeouts over 11.0 innings), but it wasn't enough to earn him a spot on the 25-man roster. The lefty could be one of the first arms up in the event of an injury.
Mar 1 2013Smith allowed just one run on two hits with five strikeouts over three innings in his Cactus League debut Thursday. According to manager Ned Yost, "We had him slated for two, and he got through the first two so easily, I said, 'Man, we've got to give him another one.'"Smith focused on his fastball, curve and changeup and looked strong throwing all three. He has now thrown a total of five innings with just the two hits and one run as the only blemishes. Technically, he is still in the competition for the fifth starter's position, but in truth, should he make the 25-man roster it will be as a long reliever and emergency spot-starter.
Sep 29 2012Smith was lit up for six runs on nine hits and two walks with two strikeouts over just three innings against the Indians on Friday.Fantasy owners who decided to stream in Smith after his impressive outing against the Tribe last week really took it on the chin this time as the 23-year old lefty turned in his worst start of the season. He finishes the season with a 6-9 record, posting a 5.32 ERA and a 59:33 K:BB over 89.2 innings. We'll see him next spring where he will get a chance to fight for a spot in the Royals' rotation.
Sep 23 2012Smith allowed two runs on eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts over seven innings against the Indians on Saturday.Smith pitched a solid game, scattering hits and stranding base runners, after being staked an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. His only mistake was a two-run home run to Cord Phelps in the fifth, but the Royals piled on a pair of runs in the bottom half to maintain their lead. Smith has thrown quality starts in two of his last three games and looks to continue that momentum with another match-up against these same Indians next week.
Sep 17 2012Smith allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks while tallying two strikeouts across five innings Sunday during the Royals' tight loss to the Angels. He doled out a gift in the second inning for the slumping Mark Trumbo: a two-seamer right down the pipe, which he promptly deposited over the center field wall. Still, Smith is experiencing his best month of the season. He's 1-2 with a 3.50 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 18 innings during three September nods. His next one arrives Saturday at Cleveland, where he yielded two runs in six innings during his first win of the season on May 29.
Sep 11 2012Pitching on 10-day's rest, Smith tossed seven innings of shutout ball, allowing seven hits and three walks while striking out a season-high seven batters.Smith had his last start skipped and the rest did wonders for him as he notched his fifth win of the season. His next start comes against the Angels on Sunday.
Sep 7 2012The Royals plan to reinsert Smith into the rotation Tuesday, Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports.Manager Ned Yost decided to skip Smith's latest turn so he could trot out Luis Mendoza, Jeremy Guthrie, and Bruce Chen against the White Sox. Smith will return for Tuesday's opener at Minnesota, which pushes the other starters back a day.
Sep 4 2012Smith will have his next turn in the rotation skipped, according to the Kansas City Star. It's nothing that Smith did or didn't do; it's about the upcoming match-ups. Manager Ned Yost wants the Royals to play spolier here in September and he is shuffling the rotation so that he can have Luis Mendoza, Jeremy Guthrie, and Bruce Chen pitching against the White Sox. Smith will make his regular start the next time around.
Sep 1 2012Smith allowed three runs over six innings and was the losing pitcher Saturday against the Twins. He gave up nine hits while walking two and striking out four. Not his best start of the season but he still delivered a quality start and gave the Royals' offense a chance to need only a few runs to win (which they failed to do). The loss drops his record to 4-7 on the season to accompany a 5.45 ERA and 43 strikeouts.
Aug 31 2012With Friday's game against the Twins being postponed due to inclement weather, Smith will now start the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, the Royals' official site reports.Smith will still be opposed right-hander Cole De Vries on Saturday. The left-handed Smith gave up seven runs on three homers in his last start against Minnesota on June 4.
Aug 26 2012Smith gave up five runs (four earned) on nine hits and two walks with one strikeout over five innings against the Red Sox on Sunday. After back-to-back quality starts, Smith has been hit hard in his last two outings -- eight earned runs in 8.2 innings. He's now 2-3 with a 5.08 ERA here in August with a 17:11 K:BB ratio. He'll look to rebound next week with a home start against Minnesota, but the last time he faced the Twins, he coughed up seven runs in 4.2 innings.
Aug 20 2012Smith was hit hard Monday by the Rays as he pitched 3.2 innings and allowed four runs, eight hits and two walks to go along with four strikeouts.Smith had been pitching much better late, but he ran into a hot team in the Rays and came away with the loss. He still has plenty of room for improvement as he has a 5.40 ERA and 1.45 WHIP for the season.
Aug 16 2012Smith allowed two runs over seven innings to pick up his fourth win of the season Wednesday against Oakland.Smith got off to a dreadful start this year, but he's been much better lately. He's allowed four runs or fewer in each of his last six starts, although his K:BB ratio (25:13) over that time hasn't been particularly impressive.
Aug 9 2012Smith tossed seven innings of two-run ball Thursday to earn his third win of the season. He scattered six hits, walked three and struck out five.Smith had just one 1-2-3 inning, but was still effective, needing just 99 pitches to get through seven frames. He posted his third quality start in his last four, and matched his career high in strikeouts.
Aug 4 2012Smith allowed eight hits, four runs and three walks in 5.2 innings against the Rangers on Saturday to fall to 2-4 on the season.Smith remains winless in three Kauffman Stadium starts. He also has an 8.10 ERA and 1.86 WHIP in three home starts versus a 4.43 and 1.16 22.1 road innings.
Jul 29 2012Smith gave up three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts over six innings against the Mariners on Sunday.Smith has now given the Royals back-to-back quality starts on the road and perhaps a little bit of consistency at the back-end of the rotation. He threw 85 pitches (55 for strikes) and did not walk a single batter. He does have a tough test coming up this week when he faces the Rangers next. Texas is a predominately right-handed lineup that is batting .281 against southpaws this season.
Jul 25 2012Smith gave up just one run off two hits and four walks while striking out four over seven innings against the Angels on Tuesday. In just his fifth start of the season, Smith held one of the hottest offenses in check with an outstanding game. He gave up an RBI-single in the first inning to Mark Trumbo and then proceeded to blank the Angels for the next six innings. He left after throwing 102 pitches (57 strikes) and inducing eight ground-ball outs. It was a nice confidence-booster heading into a favorable start in Seattle his next time out.
Jul 19 2012Smith was recalled from Triple-A Omaha on Thursday to start against the Mariners and gave up four runs on eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts over 6.1 innings. On a Royals scale of starts this one actually wasn't that bad. Smith threw 90 pitches (59 for strikes), induced six ground ball outs and was mostly victimized by a hot-hitting Jesus Montero. Given some of the outings the team has seen recently, today's start probably earned Smith another shot next week.
May 29 2012Smith earned his first win of the season after giving up just two runs off four hits and a pair of walks while striking out five through six innings against the Indians on Tuesday. After being staked a 2-0 lead in the first, Smith coughed up a pair of runs and looked as though he might be in trouble for the rest of the night. But despite a few errors from his supporting cast, Smith held it together and shut down the Tribe for the next five innings, retiring the final eight batters he faced. Given the state of flux the back end of the Royals' rotation is in, it's hard to say whether or not Smith will get another start, but this performance certainly helped state his case for another go-around.
May 23 2012Smith (0-1) was pounded in his major league debut Wednesday against the Yankees. He lasted just 3.1 innings, during which he allowed five runs on six hits -- including three home runs -- and a walk for the Royals. Two of the homers came in Alex Rodriguez's first two at-bats, a kind welcome to the big leagues for the 22-year-old Smith, who was called-up from Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday. Even if he doesn't start again during Chris Getz's (rib) stay on the DL, Smith should still provide a long-relief option in the bullpen in the meantime.
May 23 2012Smith will make his major league debut on Wednesday when he starts the series finale against the Yankees, the Kansas City Star reports. The move is a bit of a surprise, but manager Ned Yost felt it was better to have a left-hander on the mound against the Yankees while moving Luis Mendoza back into a long-relief role. In nine starts for Triple-A Omaha, Smith was 1-3 with a 4.01 ERA and a 37:13 K:BB through 51.2 innings.
May 22 2012Smith was recalled by the Royals on Tuesday, Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports.Chris Getz was placed on the 15-day DL after aggravating a rib injury Monday night, so Smith will provide an option in long relief with the flexibility to move into the rotation if needed after carrying a 37:13 K:BB over 51.2 innings in nine starts at Triple-A Omaha.
