Feb 20 2025Kelly said Thursday on the Baseball Isn't Boring podcast that his right shoulder is "not 100 percent yet." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly expects the shoulder, which he first injured last August, to "eventually" get healthy enough to where he can pitch, and he has been throwing in preparation for pitching in 2025. However, the free agent acknowledged that it's possible he will retire if the shoulder doesn't cooperate. The 36-year-old has indicated previously that he would only pitch for the Dodgers, although it's not clear whether he is still sticking to that stance.
Jan 14 2025Kelly (shoulder) indicated on The Dodgers Bleed Los Podcast on Jan. 7 that he will either re-sign with the Dodgers or retire. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly also revealed that he's not yet recovered from the right shoulder injury which prematurely ended his 2024 season. It's not clear what the Dodgers' level of interest in re-signing Kelly is, but if the 36-year-old is able to get over the hump with his shoulder, it sounds like he's only interested in staying in Los Angeles. Kelly posted a 4.78 ERA and 35:16 K:BB over 32 innings during the 2024 regular season.
Oct 12 2024Kelly (shoulder) is unavailable for the NLCS against the Mets, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly was expected to be out until the World Series with the shoulder issue, and that has now been confirmed. He last pitched Sept. 27 and suffered a setback in early October when he attempted to ramp up.
Oct 5 2024Kelly (shoulder) isn't expected to be able to pitch again this season unless the Dodgers reach the World Series, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, Kelly tweaked his shoulder in a simulated game this week. The issue explains why the right-handed reliever was left off Los Angeles' NLDS roster. Though Kelly posted an unimpressive 4.78 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over 32 innings during the regular season, he recorded a 9.8 K/9 and tied for third on the team with 13 holds.
Sep 18 2024The Dodgers activated Kelly (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Wednesday, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly has been out since late August with right shoulder inflammation but is ready to go after making a couple rehab appearances. He's likely to be used in low-leverage situations.
Sep 16 2024Kelly (shoulder) has joined the Dodgers in Atlanta and will likely be activated from the 15-day injured list during this week's series in Miami, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly made two rehab appearances with Triple-A Oklahoma City, most recently striking out two in a scoreless inning Sunday. He'll rest Monday before likely returning from the IL Tuesday. Kelly holds a 5.20 ERA and 1.59 WHIP through 27.2 innings this season.
Sep 11 2024Kelly (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Thursday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Dave Roberts said Kelly will make two appearances in the minors -- the second of which will come Sunday -- before rejoining the Dodgers' bullpen sometime next week. The 36-year-old righty owns a 5.20 ERA and 1.59 WHIP through 27.2 innings on the year and will likely be limited to low-leverage situations once he's healthy.
Aug 31 2024The Dodgers placed Kelly on the 15-day injured list Saturday due to right shoulder inflammation. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly was roughed up in Friday's game against the Diamondbacks, when he gave up two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out one over 1.2 innings. Kelly was previously sidelined for over two months due to a strained right shoulder, and it's unclear whether the 36-year-old's stint on the IL will be longer than the minimum window. Right-hander Ben Casparius was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City in a corresponding move.
Aug 20 2024Kelly picked up a hold against Seattle on Monday, striking out one batter in a perfect inning of work. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly served as the bridge between starter Gavin Stone (who pitched seven scoreless innings) and Evan Phillips (who handled the ninth for a save). Though Kelly missed over two months from early May to mid-July due to a shoulder injury, he ranks second on the Dodgers with 13 holds. The right-hander has posted a 4.88 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 28:11 K:BB over 24 innings on the campaign.
Jul 19 2024The Dodgers activated Kelly (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly has been shelved since May 6 due to a strained right shoulder. Prior to the injury, the 36-year-old logged a 4.73 ERA and nine holds across 13.1 innings. Michael Petersen was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City and Jose Hernandez was DFA'd to make room for Kelly on the active and 40-man rosters.
Jul 7 2024Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Sunday that Kelly (shoulder) isn't expected to return from the 60-day injured list until after the All-Star break, the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly tossed a pair of scoreless innings in his first two rehab appearances for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga on Tuesday and Friday before rejoining the Dodgers in Los Angeles. He tossed a simulated inning Sunday, but Roberts noted that the right-hander wasn't sharp, as he hit two batters during the outing. Roberts hasn't indicated that Kelly will be shut down, so the 36-year-old will presumably link back up with a minor-league affiliate during the upcoming week to make another rehab appearance or two before the Dodgers entertain his return to the bullpen after the break.
Jul 6 2024Kelly (shoulder) tossed one scoreless inning, during which he allowed a hit and a walk while striking out one batter, in a rehab appearance with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly had a bit of trouble finding the strike zone -- seven of his 13 pitches were balls -- and he allowed the first two batters he faced to reach base via a single and a walk. However, the veteran reliever followed with a strikeout before inducing an inning-ending double play to escape without allowing any runs. Kelly has tossed two scoreless frames through two rehab outings with the Single-A Quakes. It's not clear how many more minor-league appearances he'll be asked to make before being activated from the injured list, but there appears to be a good chance that he'll be back in Los Angeles' bullpen before the All-Star break.
Jul 2 2024Kelly (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga on Tuesday.
Jun 16 2024The Dodgers transferred Kelly (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As a result of the transaction, Kelly won't be eligible to return to the Dodgers bullpen until the first week of July. The right-hander threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Friday, so he already seems to be making good progress in his recovery from the right shoulder strain that has kept him out of action since May 6. He could be cleared to begin a minor-league rehab assignment later this week or next.
Jun 14 2024Kelly (shoulder) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Friday, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Friday's bullpen was Kelly's second this week, marking a significant advancement in his rehab from a right shoulder strain. He's been sidelined since May 6 due to the issue and will almost certainly require a rehab assignment, which could come soon. Prior to the injury, Kelly hadn't allowed a run in 11 of 12 appearances, but he owns a 4.73 ERA on the year.
Jun 2 2024Kelly (shoulder) is on a slow program, and his return is not imminent, per MLB.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly has been on the injured list since May 6, and he'll likely need a minor-league rehab assignment before rejoining Los Angeles' bullpen given that his absence will almost certainly extend beyond a month. The veteran reliever was recently throwing from 90 feet, but manager Dave Roberts clarified Friday that Kelly isn't close to a return.
May 20 2024Kelly (shoulder) is set to begin his throwing program Monday, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly has been on the 15-day injured list since May 6 with a right shoulder strain, and he will now take the first step toward making his return. The right-hander will likely need to build up his workload and even potentially make a trip to the minors for a rehab assignment. Kelly will receive a timetable for his return, which currently appears to be at least a week away, based on how his shoulder responds to the beginning of his throwing program.
May 6 2024Kelly has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to a right shoulder strain, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly fought off a groin issue nearly one week ago, but he'll be shut down for at least the next 15 days after picking up a new injury. The club has yet to comment on the length of Kelly's stay on the IL, however, the right-hander "didn't believe it would keep him out too long," per David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports. This move clears a roster spot for Walker Buehler, who is making his season debut Monday night against the Marlins.
May 1 2024Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Kelly tweaked his right groin while fielding a grounder in Tuesday's extra-inning loss to Arizona, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly was checked on by a trainer after fielding a grounder and throwing to first base in the seventh inning, but he was able to stay in the game and finish the frame, picking up his seventh hold of the season in the process. Roberts said after the loss that the veteran reliever tweaked his right groin on the play and indicated that the team would assess him Wednesday. Kelly has pitched an inning in three of the past four days, and he probably won't be available for Wednesday's contest regardless of how he's feeling, per Ardaya.
Dec 2 2023Kelly signed a one-year contract with the Dodgers on Saturday, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Dodgers declined Kelly's $9.5 million club option earlier in the offseason, but the team will retain the 35-year-old reliever -- likely at a lower salary. Kelly put up a 4.12 ERA and 1.19 WHIP across 39.1 innings in 2023, though his numbers significantly improved after being traded to Los Angeles from the White Sox in July (1.74 ERA, 0.87 WHIP in 10.1 innings). It's unlikely Kelly receives many save opportunities given his injury history and the Dodgers' already-strong bullpen, though he could still be used fairly often in high-leverage situations.
Nov 5 2023The Dodgers declined Kelly's $9.5 million club option for 2024 on Sunday, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly was acquired from the White Sox at the trade deadline but appeared in just 11 games for the Dodgers, though he pitched well with a 1.74 ERA and 19:6 K:BB over 10.1 innings. The decision comes with a $1 million buyout, and Los Angeles apparently believes it can better utilize that $8.5 million difference. Kelly's numbers with Chicago prior to the trade were less impressive, leading to a 4.12 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 42 appearances overall.
Sep 13 2023Kelly (forearm) gave up two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out two over two-thirds of an inning in Wednesday's 6-1 loss to the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly had some trouble in the seventh inning after relieving starter Ryan Pepiot. Kelly walked the first two batters he faced, and both came around to score later on a Fernando Tatis single. After missing five weeks, a little rust could be expected from Kelly, who was eased into action in a low-leverage assignment. He's posted a 4.15 ERA, 1.85 WHIP and 50:17 K:BB through 33.1 innings while picking up a save, 12 holds and six blown saves this season. Evan Phillips and Brusdar Graterol figure to handle most of the save chances down the stretch and into the postseason.
Sep 8 2023Manager Dave Roberts said he's hoping Kelly (forearm/elbow) can return Wednesday, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly is scheduled to begin a minor-league rehab assignment Friday with Low-A Rancho Cucamonga and will make a couple of appearances there before potentially returning to the Dodgers' bullpen ahead of their series finale next week against the Padres. The veteran reliever has been sidelined since Aug. 13 due to elbow and forearm inflammation.
Sep 6 2023Kelly (forearm) is on track to be activated from the 15-day injured list early next week, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly has completed multiple successful bullpen sessions since suffering a minor setback in late August and is expected to return to action during the Dodgers' upcoming three-game series against the Padres, which begins Monday. The veteran reliever landed on the injured list Aug. 13 due to right forearm inflammation.
Sep 2 2023Kelly (forearm) will throw another bullpen session or a simulated game Tuesday, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It will come after Kelly got through a 20-pitch bullpen session Friday without issue. He will need a rehab assignment before returning from his right forearm inflammation, but it shouldn't be too much longer if he continues to progress.
Aug 30 2023Kelly (forearm) will throw a bullpen session Friday and progress to a simulated game Tuesday, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly was reportedly battling forearm discomfort during his bullpen session Friday, but was able to throw another session Tuesday with no issues. The Dodgers will determine Kelly's next steps based on his performance following Tuesday's sim game, and there is still a good chance the veteran reliever is able to return before the end of the regular season.
Aug 27 2023Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Sunday that Kelly is still experiencing forearm discomfort, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly tried to throw a bullpen session Friday and it didn't go well, though Roberts told reporters that the veteran reliever is still expected back at some point his year. He's been on the 15-day injured list since Aug. 13 due to a bout of right forearm inflammation.
Aug 16 2023Kelly (forearm) will throw a bullpen session Friday, Matthew Moreno of DodgerBlue.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly landed on the injured list Sunday due to inflammation in his right forearm and is set to resume throwing off a mound after nearly a week. Kelly will still have to remain out for at least another week following his bullpen session Friday, but how he feels afterwards could provide a clearer picture on whether he'll be able to come back after a minimum stay.
Aug 13 2023The Dodgers placed Kelly on the 15-day injured list Sunday with right forearm inflammation. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sunday marks the third time Kelly has landed on the injured list this season, with his previous trip coming as a result of right elbow inflammation in July. The 35-year-old righty has thrown 3.2 scoreless frames since being traded to the Dodgers and will be eligible to return from the IL on Aug. 25.
Jul 28 2023The White Sox are nearing a deal to send Kelly to the Dodgers alongside Lance Lynn, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After putting up a 4.97 ERA and 1.31 WHIP through 29 innings with the White Sox, Kelly will seemingly rejoin the Dodgers' bullpen after one and a half seasons in Chicago. Assuming the deal goes through, Kelly will likely be used primarily in middle relief with the Dodgers.
Jul 28 2023The White Sox traded Kelly and Lance Lynn to the Dodgers on Friday in exchange for Trayce Thompson (oblique), Nick Nastrini and Jordan Leasure, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly spent three seasons with the Dodgers between 2019 and 2021, recording a 3.59 ERA and 1.22 WHIP through 105.1 innings. His numbers this season haven't quite been at the same level, but the Dodgers have developed a reputation for getting the most out of veteran pitchers. That being said, Kelly likely won't see nearly as many high-leverage situations with his new club as he did with the White Sox.
Jul 22 2023Kelly (elbow) was activated from the 15-day injured list Saturday, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly wound up missing just a little over the minimum 15 days with right elbow inflammation. The veteran reliever holds a 4.82 ERA this season, although that's come with a 37:10 K:BB over 28 innings.
Jul 16 2023Kelly (elbow) threw a bullpen session Sunday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly has been on the shelf since July 6 with right elbow inflammation, and he projects to return from the injured list when first eligible Thursday. The 35-year-old reliever holds a 4.82 ERA and 1.25 WHIP through 28 innings this season alongside 10 holds and six blown saves.
Jul 6 2023Kelly was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday with right elbow inflammation, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly closed out June on a strong note but allowed two runs in each of his first two appearances in July. Now he'll be down for at least the next couple weeks. Nicholas Padilla is taking his spot in the bullpen.
Jun 29 2023Kelly threw a scoreless seventh inning while allowing a hit and a walk Thursday against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly entered the game in the seventh inning, the first reliever after Lance Lynn was lifted. He successfully held the lead and turned in his sixth consecutive scoreless outing, during which he has picked up two holds and maintained a 6:3 K:BB. Though he's been effective for most of the campaign, Kelly has only one save and looks to be behind Kendall Graveman for save chances with Liam Hendriks (elbow) sidelined.
May 29 2023Kelly blew the save Sunday against the Tigers, allowing one run on one hit during the ninth inning. He struck out two and did not issue a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kendall Graveman operated as the setup man Sunday, allowing Kelly to earn a save chance, but the latter couldn't secure the win as Javier Baez tied the game in the ninth with an RBI groundout after Riley Greene ripped a one-out triple. Kelly made two appearances during the four-game series against the Tigers and allowed four runs across 1.1 innings. He now holds an ugly 4.60 ERA and has blown three of his four save chances, but his 0.89 WHIP and 21:1 K:BB over 15.2 innings are encouraging. Either way, Kelly isn't expected to get too many more opportunities as a closer with Liam Hendriks (illness) likely returning to the bullpen Monday.
May 21 2023Kelly picked up the save Sunday against the Royals. He struck out two over one perfect inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly was handed the ball by manager Pedro Grifol for the ninth inning Sunday with Kendall Graveman getting the night off after pitching an inning each of the last two days. Though Kelly blew his only other save opportunity, he has remained a high-leverage arm for the White Sox but likely won't receive enough save opportunities to warrant fantasy consideration, especially once Liam Hendriks (illness) returns from the 15-day injured list.
May 5 2023Kelly was reinstated from the paternity list Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly will be back with the White Sox after he missed the team's series with the Twins. He'll return to his role as a late-inning option for Chicago while Sammy Peralta was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte to make room for Kelly on the major-league roster.
May 2 2023Kelly was placed on the paternity list Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly will miss at least a portion of Chicago's three-game series with the Twins as he welcomes a new addition to his growing family. The veteran setup man has surrendered four earned runs in 4.2 innings (five appearances) this season out of the White Sox bullpen. He was out for part of April due to a right groin strain.
Mar 29 2023Kelly pitched well in the Cactus League with a 2.25 ERA over eight innings of work in eight appearances. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly did allow eight hits, but he issued just one walk against seven strikeouts while not allowing a homer. The right-hander struggled mightily in his time with the White Sox in 2022 with a 6.08 ERA in 43 appearances with a 53;23 K:BB, but the 34-year-old has made a habit of bouncing back from poor campaigns with positive ones the following year. Kelly will likely work in a setup role, but he could see some save opportunities with the White Sox having no set stopper to begin the season.
Sep 24 2022Kelly was reinstated from the family medical leave list Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly had been away from the team since Sunday. His return will push Tanner Banks back to the minors. Kelly hasn't given up a run in any of his last five appearances, but that's only served to bring his ERA down to 6.42.
Sep 18 2022Kelly was placed on the family medical leave list Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Tanner Banks will take Kelly's place in the bullpen in advance of Sunday's bullpen game against the Tigers. Kelly has a five-appearance scoreless streak with nine strikeouts in his last 4.2 innings.
Sep 2 2022Kelly will start Friday's game against the Twins, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly has surrendered eight runs over his past six outings but will be called upon to open Friday's contest. Davis Martin, who was previously expected to start Friday, is likely to follow Kelly as the primary pitcher, though Chicago hasn't officially announced its pitching plans.
Aug 31 2022Kelly (knee) gave up a run on one hit while pitching the eighth inning of Tuesday's 9-7 loss to the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly was back on the mound after he was removed from his previous relief appearance three days earlier against the Diamondbacks due to a bruised right knee. He retired three of the four batters he faced, though the lone hit he allowed was a solo home run by Michael Taylor. Kelly now owns a 7.07 ERA and 1.68 WHIP over 28 innings on the season.
Aug 27 2022Kelly left Saturday's appearance with a bruised left knee, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly was forced to exit after getting hit by a comebacker off the bat of Jake McCarthy with no outs in the top of the ninth. He left with the bases loaded and was ultimately charged with three earned runs. The X-rays came back negative on the right-hander's knee and he's considered day-to-day moving forward.
Aug 15 2022Kelly (illness) is available out of the bullpen Monday against the Astros, Scot Gregor of the Chicago Daily Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly was removed from Thursday's game against the Royals due to lightheadedness and didn't pitch during the weekend series against the Tigers. He's posted a 2.25 ERA and 0.88 WHIP in eight innings over nine appearances since the All-Star break.
Aug 11 2022Kelly exited Thursday's game against the Royals due to lightheadedness. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly will be further evaluated to determine the extent of the issue, but he should be considered day-to-day for now. If he's forced to miss additional time, Jake Diekman and Reynaldo Lopez should be candidates to see increased setup work.
Jul 27 2022Kelly was removed from Wednesday's game against the Rockies with right biceps discomfort, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly entered for the eighth inning and allowed a double, hit a batter and had two strikeouts before exiting with the injury. According to Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times, the right-hander said the injury is related to the nerve issue in the same biceps which delayed his start to the season, though he doesn't expect to miss any time after the injury cropped up again Wednesday.
Jun 21 2022Kelly allowed two earned runs on two hits while striking out one to earn the save against the Blue Jays on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly surprisingly entered the game in the ninth inning, following Kendall Graveman -- the presumed closer in the absence of Liam Hendriks (forearm). Though Kelly managed to tally his first save of the season and sixth of his career, he made things interesting by allowing a single and a home run with one out. It is worth noting that Graveman was used to face the middle of Toronto's dangerous order, so it would be premature to now say Kelly is definitely the fill-in closer.
Jun 14 2022Kelly (hamstring) was activated from the 15-day injured list ahead of Tuesday's game against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He probably wouldn't be the first option, but with Liam Hendriks (forearm strain) out indefinitely, there could be saves available in the Chicago bullpen. Kendall Graveman seems like the most likely option to get the first chance to fill in for Hendriks. Kelly had a rough start to the season but logged four scoreless appearances prior to landing on the shelf.
Jun 13 2022Kelly (hamstring) is expected to be reinstated from the 15-day injured list Tuesday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly tossed over 20 pitches during a simulated game Sunday, and he'll be able to rejoin the White Sox's bullpen without making any rehab appearances. Over his seven major-league outings prior to his absence, he posted a 9.53 ERA and 2.47 WHIP in 5.2 innings.
Jun 12 2022Kelly (hamstring) threw over 20 pitches in a simulated game and could be activated next week, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He will on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte to begin the week, but it could be a very brief stint since Kelly says he's ready to go. Once activated, Kelly will operate in a mid-leverage role.
Jun 8 2022Kelly (hamstring) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Thursday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It will be the right-hander's first bullpen session since landing on the injured list two weeks ago with a strained left hamstring. Kelly expects to require two bullpen sessions and potentially one rehab outing before rejoining the active roster.
May 26 2022Kelly was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a strained left hamstring. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly exited Wednesday's game against the Red Sox with the injury and will now be sidelined for at least the next couple weeks. He'll be eligible to be activated as early as June 10, but Kelly said he's dealing with a Grade 2 strain and expects to be sidelined for approximately 3-4 weeks, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. Tanner Banks was promoted from Triple-A Charlotte in a corresponding move.
May 25 2022Kelly was removed from Wednesday's game against the Red Sox with left hamstring tightness. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly needed only seven pitches to strike out the only two batters he faced during the eighth inning, but he appeared to tweak his hamstring on his last pitch and promptly exited the contest. The severity of the injury remains unclear, and the veteran right-hander will be evaluated further Thursday morning, so he's likely to be unavailable for the series final versus Boston.
May 13 2022Kelly (0-1) allowed five earned runs on one hit and four walks while striking out one across 0.2 innings to take the loss Thursday against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly entered the game in the eighth inning with the score tied at seven. He retired the first two batters he faced but proceeded to walk the next three hitters, leading to his disastrous outing. Kelly has made two appearances since returning from a biceps injury, and he figures to maintain a high-leverage role in the White Sox bullpen despite this poor outing.
May 10 2022Kelly allowed two hits and struck out one across a scoreless inning to record a hold Monday against the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly made his White Sox debut after beginning the season on the injured list due to a biceps strain. He entered the game in the seventh inning with a three-run lead and surrendered two singles but got out of the jam unscathed. Kelly figures to maintain a high-leverage role in the Chicago bullpen, but he is unlikely to draw regular save chances.
May 9 2022Kelly (biceps) was activated off the 10-day injured list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly will join the White Sox ahead of their three-game series against the Guardians on Monday. The right-hander had been nursing a biceps strain since last October, but after signing with the team in the offseason, he'll finally be available to make his debut for Chicago in the coming days. In 48 appearances with the Dodgers last season, Kelly produced a 2.86 ERA and 0.98 WHIP while striking out 50 batters over 44 innings.
May 6 2022Kelly (biceps) has thrown two scoreless innings while striking out three and walking one while on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly began the rehab assignment on May 1, and he pitched again three days later. He is targeting a return to the White Sox at some point during the team's upcoming series against Cleveland and appears to be on track to do so. The White Sox boast a deep bullpen, but Kelly should still have the chance to pitch in high-leverage situations upon his activation.
May 2 2022White Sox manager Tony La Russa said Monday that he believes Kelly (biceps) will be ready to return from the 10-day injured list early next week, Scot Gregor of the Chicago Daily Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly, who has been on the shelf all season while recovering from a right biceps strain, made his first rehab appearance at Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday. He turned in a scoreless inning in his 2022 debut, striking out one while hitting a batter and allowing no other baserunners. The White Sox will likely want to see Kelly make at least two or three more appearances in the minors before adding him back to the big-league bullpen, where he'll be part of the bridge to closer Liam Hendriks.
Apr 26 2022Kelly (biceps) could begin a rehab assignment this weekend, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly is in the final stages of recovery from a biceps strain which dates back to last October. He's expected to pitch one more time at the team's spring training complex and will embark on a rehab assignment if that outing goes well.
Apr 17 2022Manager Tony La Russa said Kelly (biceps) is throwing in the mid-90s with no discomfort and is scheduled to face live hitters this week, Vinnie Duber of NBC Sports Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly is working out at the White Sox's extended spring training in Arizona, and he may be able to return from the injured list without a minor-league rehab assignment. Even if the 33-year-old does head to the minors, it shouldn't delay his return very long.
Apr 13 2022White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said that Kelly (biceps) could soon face hitters at extended spring training before heading out on a minor-league rehab assignment before the end of April, Vinnie Duber of NBC Sports Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly hasn't experienced any setbacks from the strained right biceps he sustained while pitching with the Dodgers in the NLCS last year, but the slow progression in his recovery over the offseason resulted in him being placed on the White Sox's 10-day injured list to begin the season. Since joining the White Sox in spring training, Kelly has gradually been advancing through his throwing program, and he appears close to reaching the final phase of his rehab. If he continues to avoid setbacks, Kelly looks like he could be ready to return from the IL by early May, if not the final week of April.
Apr 7 2022Kelly (biceps) was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to April 4. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly landed a two-year contract with the White Sox in mid-March, but he'll be unavailable to begin the regular season due to a nerve issue related to the biceps strain he sustained while pitching for the Dodgers in the NLCS last year. It's not clear whether he'll be able to return after spending the minimum of 10 days on the IL, but he'll likely be in the mix for a setup role once healthy since Craig Kimbrel was recently traded to the Dodgers.
Mar 14 2022White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said Monday that Kelly (biceps) isn't expected to be ready to pitch by Opening Day, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hahn provided the update on Kelly's condition after the White Sox officially confirmed the reliever's signing on a two-year, $17 million contract. Though Hahn acknowledged that Kelly himself would probably say that he's on track for the start of the season, the White Sox are inclined to take a more cautious approach with the right-hander while he continues to build back up from a nerve issue related to the biceps strain he sustained during the NLCS while pitching for the Dodgers last fall. Once healthy, Kelly is expected to slot into a middle-relief role for a White Sox bullpen that is overflowing with impressive arms.
Mar 12 2022Kelly (biceps) signed a two-year deal with the White Sox on Saturday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly strained his biceps during the NLCS, and it's not yet clear whether or not he'll be ready to go by Opening Day. He has the potential to fill a high-leverage role, as he owns a 2.67 ERA over the last two seasons and a 3.62 mark since becoming a full-time reliever in 2017. It would take multiple injuries or trades for him to get the chance to close, however, as the White Sox have an elite duo at the back of their bullpen in Liam Hendriks and Craig Kimbrel.
Nov 6 2021Kelly (biceps) had his team option declined by the Dodgers on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly will be paid a $4 million buyout rather than a $12 million salary. He was an important part of the Dodgers' bullpen in 2021, riding a career-high 27.5 percent strikeout rate to a 2.86 ERA. The team could still try to bring him back at a lower dollar amount, though the strained biceps he suffered during the NLCS adds a fair amount of uncertainty to the veteran's profile this winter.
Oct 22 2021Kelly (biceps) was dropped from the Dodgers' NLCS roster Friday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The move means Kelly will be ineligible to pitch in the World Series should the Dodgers advance, but that was already going to be the case, as the biceps strain he suffered in Game 5 on Thursday will keep him out for the rest of the year. Whether or not the injury will still be an injury at the start of spring training is not yet clear. David Price will replace him on the playoff roster.
Oct 21 2021Kelly (biceps) will not pitch again this season, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Timesreports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly served as the opener in Game 5 of the NLCS on Thursday but was forced out of the game early due to a right biceps strain. He won't pitch again this season, but a clearer timeline has yet to be determined.
Oct 13 2021Kelly (1-0) allowed one hit and no walks in two-thirds of a scoreless inning to earn the win over the Giants in Game 4 of the NLDS on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly has made three relief appearances since the start of the postseason, and he was rewarded with his first playoff win of 2021 on Tuesday. Across 2.1 innings since the playoffs began, the right-hander has posted a 3.86 ERA and 1.71 WHIP.
Oct 2 2021Kelly earned a hold against Milwaukee on Friday despite allowing one run on a hit and a walk over two-thirds of an inning. Both outs he recorded came via strikeout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After walking Christian Yelich to lead off the frame, Kelly bounced back to strike out the subsequent two batters. However, Yelich stole second and came around to score when Daniel Vogelbach notched a two-out single. That was the end of the outing for Kelly, as Kenley Jansen took over from there and recorded the four-out save. The run allowed by Kelly was his first in over a month. Since Sept. 1, the right hander has posted a minuscule 0.75 ERA and 0.67 WHIP while striking out 13 batters over 12 innings. Over that stretch, he has picked up one save and six holds.
Sep 12 2021Kelly earned a hold against San Diego on Saturday by striking out both batters he faced. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Situations don't get much higher in leverage than the one Kelly faced Saturday, as he was tasked with preserving a one-run eighth-inning lead with Fernando Tatis on third base and only one out. The fireballer shined in the spotlight, needing only seven pitches to strike out both Wil Myers and Tommy Pham. Kelly hasn't allowed a run in his past six outings, posting a 4:0 K:BB and picking up two holds and a save over that span.
Sep 2 2021Kelly earned the save Wednesday against Atlanta after tossing a perfect inning. He didn't strike out anyone. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly bounced back from his previous outing, where he allowed two runs across one inning against the Rockies, though it's worth noting that those are the only two runs he has given up over his previous five appearances. The veteran reliever has a 3.27 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 11:5 K:BB across 11 innings since the All-Star break.
Aug 25 2021Kelly (undisclosed) was activated from the COVID-19 injured list Wednesday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly had been on the virus-related IL since Aug. 10, but he returns to take Victor Gonzalez's spot on the active roster and in the bullpen. The righty was pitching well before going on the shelf, allowing only one run on two hits and a walk in his last 6.2 innings while striking out seven.
Aug 22 2021Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he expects Kelly (COVID-19 injured list) to be activated ahead of Tuesday's series opener in San Diego, Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Roberts said he felt Kelly looked "rusty" during his first rehab outing at Low-A Rancho Cucamonga on Friday, when he recorded one out and issued two walks. As a result, the Dodgers will have him make one more tune-up appearance Sunday for the affiliate before rejoining the big club ahead of the big three-game series with the Padres. Once reinstated, Kelly should be a key part of the late-inning bridge to closer Kenley Jansen.
Aug 20 2021Kelly (undisclosed) walked two batters and notched one strikeout over one-third of an inning in a rehab appearance with Low-A Rancho Cucamonga on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pitching for the first time since going on the IL without an injury designation Aug. 10, Kelly hurled 16 pitches before departing with a pair of runners on base. Manager Dave Roberts previously indicated that the right-handed reliever could be activated as soon as Sunday, per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, though it's possible the Dodgers could elect for Kelly to make another rehab appearance given his rust Friday.
Aug 10 2021The Dodgers placed Kelly on the injured list Monday without a designation, implying he's been deactivated due to COVID-19-related reasons. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Due to privacy reasons, the Dodgers can't disclose whether Kelly has tested positive for the coronavirus, or if he's merely considered a close contact of an infected person or persons. Regardless, Kelly's move to the IL clears a spot on the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster for fellow reliever Corey Knebel (lat), who was reinstated from the 60-day IL.
Jul 27 2021Manager Dave Roberts said Kelly (hamstring) is unavailable for Tuesday's game at San Francisco, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander tweaked his hamstring during Sunday's win over the Rockies and will be sidelined for at least one game. It's not believed to be a serious issue as Kelly could be available for Wednesday's contest.
Jul 25 2021Kelly tweaked his hamstring in the ninth inning of Sunday's win over the Rockies, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kenley Jansen had pitched on three of the last four days, so Kelly entered Sunday's game in the ninth inning for the save opportunity. The right-hander allowed one hit and no walks while striking out one in a scoreless inning to earn the fourth save of his career and his first since 2019. However, manager Dave Roberts revealed after the game that Kelly suffered a hamstring injury while fielding a grounder, and he'll be evaluated Monday.
Jun 30 2021Kelly earned a hold against San Francisco on Tuesday, completing 1.1 perfect innings and striking out one batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander picked up his fifth hold of the campaign with the efficient outing during which he fired nine of 10 pitches for strikes. Kelly has held opponents scoreless over his past eight appearances, allowing only one hit while posting an 8:2 K:BB over that span. After a rough start to the season, he now carries a 4.00 ERA and 1.00 WHIP overall.
Jun 16 2021Kelly (2-0) earned the win Tuesday over the Phillies after he pitched a perfect seventh inning while striking out a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly entered to begin the seventh with the task of shutting down the top of the Phillies' order and got through the inning with no trouble. The 33-year-old righty has had a much better month of June with a 1.42 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 6:1 K:BB over 6.1 innings but still owns a 5.40 ERA overall thanks to a pair of rough outings in May.
May 8 2021Kelly allowed four runs on five hits in two-thirds of an inning against the Angels on Friday. He did not register any walks or strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander made his 2021 debut after missing over a month while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. Kelly did not look sharp in the brief appearance, yielding a triple, three doubles and a single, resulting in four runs. Some rust was to be expected given Kelly's long layoff, and he'll almost certainly receive ample opportunity to right the ship given the number of Dodgers relievers currently on the shelf.
May 6 2021Kelly (shoulder) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly spent the first month of the season recovering from November surgery, but he'll now be available to make his season debut out of the bullpen. Left-hander Scott Alexander (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move.
May 5 2021Kelly (shoulder) is nearing his return to the Dodgers, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The righty has yet to pitch in 2021 as he nears the end of his recovery from November shoulder surgery. Injury problems in both the Dodgers' rotation and bullpen have emphasized the need for additional experienced pitchers on the roster, and Kelly could work his way into a late-inning role if he impresses upon returning.
Apr 30 2021Kelly revealed Friday that he underwent surgery on his right shoulder back in November, Rob Bradford of WEEI reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly had reportedly been dealing with shoulder troubles since late in the 2019 season, which were eventually revealed to be related to a cyst on a nerve in his shoulder. Recovery from the procedure will wind up costing him the first month of the season, but he's expected to make his season debut in the second week of May.
Apr 27 2021Manager Dave Roberts said Kelly (shoulder) could be activated from the 10-day injured list during the upcoming 10-game road trip, which begins Thursday at Milwaukee, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was recently reported that the 32-year-old is expected to return in early or mid-May, and it appears he's on track for that timeline. Kelly is currently throwing at the alternate training site. Once activated, he could take on a significant role in the injury-depleted Dodgers bullpen.
Apr 24 2021Kelly (shoulder) is expected to return in early or mid-May, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly dealt with shoulder soreness throughout camp and opened the regular season on the injured list. He could serve as one of the team's top setup men upon his return with Corey Knebel (lat) expected to miss multiple months.
Apr 10 2021Kelly (undisclosed) is with the Dodgers but doesn't have a timetable for his return, Michael J. Duarte of NBC LA reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly has been throwing since late February, but there's no indication how far he has progressed. The designation of his injury is also cloudy; Kelly dealt with a shoulder issue last last season, but the organization hasn't stated that the right-hander's current absence is related to that injury. According to Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times, Kelly's return date is currently behind that of fellow sidelined reliever Brusdar Graterol (not injury related).
Apr 2 2021Kelly (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to March 29. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Dave Roberts announced last weekend the veteran right-hander would open the season on the injured list, though the move wasn't made official until the roster was finalized Thursday. Kelly is recovering from right shoulder inflammation and was throwing bullpen sessions toward the end of camp, but he had yet to progress to facing live hitters.
Mar 27 2021Kelly (shoulder) will begin the 2021 season on the injured list, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly dealt with a shoulder injury throughout spring training and has been progressing through his throwing program, but he'll require a stint on the injured list before he's ready to return to game action. The right-hander has yet to face live hitters this spring, and it's not clear when he'll be able to make his season debut.
Mar 22 2021Kelly (undisclosed) threw a bullpen session Sunday but isn't likely to be ready by Opening Day, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly continues to make progress toward a return, but he has yet to face live hitters and won't do so until tossing more bullpens. With Opening Day now 10 days away, it appears Kelly won't be able to ramp up in time to start the season on the active roster.
Mar 15 2021Kelly (shoulder) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Monday, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly still hasn't been cleared to throw in a game situation, and while it's a good sign that he continues to ramp up, he still has a few more hurdles to clear, as Plunkett mentions. His status for Opening Day will be determined by his progress over the next few weeks.
Mar 8 2021Kelly (shoulder) continues to progress through his throwing program but isn't a lock to be ready for Opening Day, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly has been dealing with shoulder soreness since the start of camp. Previous reports indicated that the Dodgers were fairly certain he'd be ready to go when the regular season begins, but they now appear to be less confident. There haven't been suggestions that he's likely to require a lengthy stay on the injured list if he does wind up needing one, however.
Mar 7 2021Manager Dave Roberts said Kelly (shoulder) is a "ways away" from being ready for game action, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 32-year-old's Friday bullpen session seemed to indicate he was nearing a return, but Roberts said otherwise Sunday. Kelly has dealt with an unspecified illness and shoulder soreness, and he still has more than three weeks to get healthy and prepare for Opening Day.
Mar 5 2021Kelly (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Friday and is progressing through his throwing program, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly has started slowly this spring due to a bout of soreness and an unspecified illness, but he appears to be working his way back in shape. The Dodgers expect the right-hander to be ready for Opening Day, and he figures to be a key cog in the team's bullpen as long as he stays healthy.
Feb 28 2021Kelly resumed his throwing program at Dodgers camp Sunday, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly left camp Friday after falling under the weather, but he returned Sunday and was able to resume throwing. He has had a slow start this spring as a result of shoulder soreness, but the right-hander should have ample time to ramp up before Opening Day.
Feb 25 2021Kelly (shoulder) threw an unspecified number of pitches off a mound Thursday, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly had thrown from 90 feet over the past two days, and he progressed to mound work Thursday. The right-hander missed the start of camp due to shoulder soreness, but he appears to be ramping up his throwing program ahead of Cactus League play. Barring any setbacks, Kelly could certainly have enough time to prepare to pitch by the start of the regular season.
Feb 24 2021Kelly (shoulder) has thrown from 90 feet on consecutive days, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly appears to be rounding into shape after being shelved at the start of camp due to shoulder soreness. The veteran suffered from the same issue last season, and it's unclear whether the Dodgers are simply being careful with him or if there remains some carryover into the start of spring. With plenty of time to go until Opening Day, however, there's a strong chance that Kelly will be ready to pitch by the start of the campaign.
Feb 18 2021Manager Dave Roberts stated that Kelly is not yet ready to throw bullpen sessions due to soreness, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Roberts didn't give any specific details related to the soreness, but instead said that Kelly is "still coming back" and "not quite there yet." Given the timing of the issue, it doesn't appear that there should be any concern for Kelly's status to start the regular season. While Kenley Jansen will start the season locked in the closer role, Kelly should fill high a high-leverage role in the Dodgers' bullpen.
Oct 7 2020Kelly recorded the save by recording the final out of Wednesday's Game 2 against the Padres. He walked two batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Closer Kenley Jansen surrendered two runs and was pulled with the tying run on second base, leaving Kelly to face Fernando Tatis and Manny Machado. Kelly walked both batters but was able to induce a groundout from Eric Hosmer to end the game. It was the right-hander's first outing of the postseason and his first game action since Sept. 26, but he was able to get the job done against San Diego's best bats.
Sep 23 2020Kelly will start Wednesday's game against the Athletics, Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly pitched one-third of an inning as a reliever Tuesday, and he'll step in on short notice to start in place of Julio Urias, who was scratched from his scheduled start for an undisclosed reason. Kelly hasn't pitched more than one inning in any of his appearances this season, but he still hasn't given up a run.
Sep 18 2020Kelly retired the only batter he faced in Thursday's win over Colorado. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After being held out of action for over five weeks due to a shoulder injury and the serving of a five-game suspension, Kelly was asked to face only one batter -- pinch hitter Ryan McMahon -- in the seventh inning Thursday. McMahon made Kelly work in the eight-pitch at-bat, but the reliever ultimately proved successful by inducing a groundout. Kelly has hurled only 6.2 innings overall this season and figures to be eased back into action as the Dodgers prepare for the postseason.
Sep 16 2020Kelly has completed his five-game suspension and will be active for Wednesday's game against the Padres, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly was hit with the ban (which was initially set to be eight games before being reduced upon appeal) for throwing near the heads of a pair of Astros hitters back in late July. The punishment was delayed for quite some time, first during the appeals process and then while Kelly spent a month on the shelf with shoulder inflammation. He's finally ready to go and should be able to make a handful of appearances for the Dodgers down the stretch.
Sep 10 2020Kelly (shoulder) was activated from the injured list Thursday and will begin to serve his five-game suspension. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly had been on the injured list with shoulder inflammation since Aug. 10. The reliever will now serve his five game suspension that he received for his role in the altercation with the Astros on Jul. 28. He will return to the Dodgers' bullpen Aug. 16.
Sep 9 2020Kelly (shoulder) demonstrated "really good command" during his pitching session Tuesday, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly's command was an issue the last time he pitched to live hitters, so Tuesday's success is an encouraging sign that the right-hander is rounding back into form. He is scheduled to throw again Thursday and could be activated soon thereafter, though he'll need to serve his five-game suspension before he is eligible to return to game action.
Sep 6 2020Kelly (shoulder) threw to live hitters Friday and struggled with his command, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Dave Roberts noted that Kelly emerged from the session healthy and will throw again Monday. "He's building up arm strength. As far as command, it wasn't where it needs to be, and right now it doesn't have to be. Monday, for me, is going to be a big test. I expect the command to be more tightened up and the intensity to be ramped up," said Roberts. Kelly will still need to serve a five-game suspension once he is activated.
Sep 3 2020Kelly (shoulder) will face live hitters this weekend and is likely to be activated next week, Alanna Rizzo of Spectrum SportsNet LA reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly tossed a bullpen session without complications Tuesday, so he appears to be recovered from the shoulder inflammation that landed him on the injured list Aug. 10. However, he won't be able to take the mound in game action until he first serves the five-game suspension that was handed to him as a result of a dust-up with the Astros in late July.
Sep 2 2020Kelly (shoulder) threw a successful bullpen session Tuesday, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 32-year-old has been sidelined since Aug. 10 with right shoulder inflammation, but he appears to be nearing his return. Manager Dave Roberts said Kelly could be return from the injured list late next week, but he'll still need to serve a five-game suspension once activated.
Aug 25 2020Kelly (shoulder) hasn't thrown off a mound since landing on the injured list Aug. 10 and isn't close to being activated, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 32-year-old remains without an official timeline for his return, and that's unlikely to change until he resumes mound work. Kelly will also need to serve a five-game suspension once activated before actually rejoining the team.
Aug 12 2020Kelly (shoulder) won his appeal and had his suspension reduced from eight games to five games, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly remains on the injured list with shoulder inflammation. While the suspension will take place once he's back on the active roster, he'll be able to return to the mound slightly sooner than expected. It's unclear when the right-hander will be healthy enough to return from the injured list. Kelly was effective as a middle reliever to begin the season, tossing 6.1 scoreless innings while posting a 5:5 K:BB over seven appearances.
Aug 10 2020Kelly landed on the 10-day injured list with shoulder inflammation Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Dodgers were already likely to be without Kelly for some time, as the hearing on his appeal of the eight-game suspension he was handed for throwing near the heads of a pair of Astros' hitters back in late July is scheduled to happen Monday. He'll now also miss an unspecified amount of time due to injury as well. He'll be eligible to return next Wednesday, as the move was made retroactive to Sunday, though it's not clear if he's expected to do so.
Aug 6 2020Kelly's hearing to appeal his eight-game suspension has been moved to Monday, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was previously reported that a decision regarding Kelly's appeal was expected by week's end, but it now looks like any announcement regarding the reliever's status will have to wait until at least early next week. As a result, Kelly should remain eligible to pitch for the entirety of the weekend series against the Giants.
Aug 5 2020The Dodgers are expecting to get an update on the status of Kelly's appeal of his eight-game suspension by the end of the week, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: MLB handed Kelly an eight-game suspension July 29 for his role in a dustup with Houston the previous day, but Kelly subsequently appealed the decision and has been available out of the Dodgers' bullpen while the league determines his fate. In three appearances since the incident, the right-hander has thrown 2.1 scoreless innings, though he has allowed three hits and two walks without a strikeout in that span.
Jul 29 2020Kelly has been suspended eight games for his role in Tuesday's benches clearing altercation with the Astros, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. He will appeal the suspension. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He threw behind Alex Bregman in a 3-0 count and then threw at Carlos Correa's head in an ensuing plate appearance, so it's not surprising it led to a suspension. Manager Dave Roberts also received a one-game suspension. Per, Eric Stephen of TrueBlueLA.com, Kelly is appealing the suspension, so he is technically available for Wednesday's game.
Jul 18 2020Kelly threw a bullpen session Thursday and is expected to be ready for Opening Day, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly has been less active during summer camp than most of the Dodgers' other healthy pitchers, having last pitched in an intrasquad game over a week ago. The right-hander suffered from an undisclosed "overall body" issue down the stretch last season, so the team may look to take extra precautions with him given the limited time to ramp up for the season and the compact 2020 schedule. Still, Kelly looks to be in line for a prominent bullpen role when the season starts Thursday.
Jul 10 2020Kelly used the practice of throwing into a net during MLB's shutdown to work on his four-seam fastball, Rowan Kavner of Dodger Insider reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Per Statcast, Kelly threw his four-seamer 28 percent of the time in 2019, a marked dropoff from the 49.9 percent frequency on which he threw the pitch the previous season. The right-hander attributed the decrease to mechanics, explaining, "At the time before all this happened, I was essentially throwing a one-finger fastball. My index finger was coming off the heater. I was losing spin efficiency." Each of Kelly's fastballs in Thursday's intrasquad game were four-seamers, and given the positive results, it's logical to expect his use of the pitch to revert closer to his career norm this season.
Feb 28 2020Kelly pitched a scoreless inning Wednesday in his first appearance of spring training, allowing one hit and striking out two. His fastball velocity was in the mid-90s and his curveball clocked in at 89 mph, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly struggled to stay healthy at the end of last season, logging only five innings in September. He indicated following Wednesday's outing that he feels healthy this spring due in part to an altered offseason training regimen focused on finding the right strength training for his lean body type. Kelly also visited the Driveline Baseball complex over the winter and emerged with a slightly different fastball grip aimed at improving his spin rate. That could help Kelly maintain more consistency this season -- he posted a 5.28 ERA prior to the All-Star break in 2019 but improved that mark to 3.48 during the second half.
Sep 30 2019Kelly pitched two-thirds of an inning against the Giants on Sunday, retiring both hitters on groundouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was an uneventful return for Kelly, who has been dealing with an undisclosed physical ailment and had not pitched since Sept. 18. He needed only six pitches to retire both hitters he faced in the brief outing. Despite Kelly's recent lack of appearances, the right-hander is expected to be ready to contribute when the NLDS begins Thursday.
Sep 30 2019Kelly pitched two-thirds of an inning against the Giants on Sunday, retiring both hitters on groundouts.
Sep 29 2019Manager Dave Roberts confirmed that Kelly (undisclosed) will work the sixth or seventh inning in Sunday's game against the Giants, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly has been dealing with an unspecified physical issue that has prevented him from making an appearance since Sept. 18, but the Dodgers are comfortable enough with his health to work him into the pitching schedule in the regular-season finale. Assuming Kelly looks good during the outing and reports no setbacks coming out of the contest, he'll likely have a spot waiting for him on the Dodgers' postseason roster.
Sep 27 2019Kelly (undisclosed) is on track to pitch in Sunday's game against the Giants, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly's bullpen session on Friday reportedly went well, so the Dodgers will attempt to get him some action before the regular season comes to an end.
Sep 26 2019Kelly is suffering from poor "overall body" health and is unlikely to be fully recovered for the playoffs, Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Both the Dodgers and Kelly have been unable to provide a clear explanation of the right-hander's ailment, though Kelly indicated that it is hampering "certain movements that are related to pitching." The 31-year-old plans to pitch again before the end of the regular season, but he made it clear that he's unlikely to return to full strength anytime soon. Kelly has posted a 4.62 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 62:22 K:BB in 50.2 innings this season.
Sep 25 2019Kelly (lower body) is not expected to pitch again until Sunday, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Dave Roberts previously suggested that Kelly would return to the mound Thursday, but plans appear to have changed and Kelly will now have only one outing -- the season finale against the Giants -- to gear up for the postseason. He'll need to make it through a bullpen session first, currently scheduled for Friday. Although Roberts has insisted that Kelly would be pitching if the playoffs were underway, Kelly's lack of playing time down the stretch -- he has appeared in only one game since Sept. 14 -- and the vague details about his condition are becoming increasingly concerning.
Sep 24 2019Kelly (lower body) won't pitch Tuesday or Wednesday but may return Thursday, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly has appeared in only one game since Sept. 14 while dealing with what manager Dave Roberts vaguely described as "overall bodyitis." Despite the extended time off and mysterious nature of Kelly's condition, Roberts suggested a lack of concern and indicated that Kelly will likely pitch Thursday. The 31-year-old is expected to play a central role in the Dodgers' bullpen in the postseason.
Sep 21 2019Kelly is a dealing with a lower-body issue that will limit his usage until the postseason, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly had been dealing with a leg injury earlier in September that limited his usage. It's unclear if his new issue is related, though he's appeared in only one contest since Sept. 15 and pitched 0.1 innings. However, it doesn't sound as if Kelly is entirely unavailable, so he should take the mound on at least a couple occasions prior to the close of the regular season.
Sep 12 2019Kelly was charged with a blown save after giving up one run in one inning against Baltimore on Wednesday. He walked one and struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly came on in the sixth inning and yielded a run on a walk, a wild pitch and a single. He also struck out the side and tossed 15 of 25 pitches for strikes. Kelly had previously been dealing with a minor leg issue but appears to be feeling better after tossing for the second time in the Dodgers' last four games.
Sep 7 2019Kelly has seen a reduced workload due to a leg issue, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kelly did not pitch for five days due to the minor issue but hurled a scoreless inning in relief Saturday, issuing two walks and striking out one batter. Manager Dave Roberts did not offer any specifics on the injury, but Kelly's presence on the mound against the Giants suggests that it isn't serious in nature. The 31-year-old has been one of the Dodgers' most reliable relievers since the All-Star break, compiling a 3.06 ERA and holding hitters to a .190 average over 17.2 innings.
Aug 30 2019Kelly pitched one inning against Arizona on Thursday, allowing three runs on three hits while striking out one.
Aug 25 2019Kelly won't be available to pitch Sunday due to rest purposes, J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News reports.
Aug 12 2019Kelly is expected to get occassional save opportunities down the stretch as the Dodgers look to preserve Kenley Jansen with an eye toward the postseason, Mike DiGiovanna

Jul 15 2018Kelly allowed two runs on two hits and a walk over two-thirds of an inning in Saturday's 6-2 win over the Blue Jays.Kelly was cruising through May with a 1.73 ERA, but a recent horrible stretch increased the ERA to 4.31. He's permitted runs in eight of his last 18 outings, posting an ugly 9.22 ERA and 1.90 WHIP over 13.2 innings since June 1. Manager Alex Cora continues to put him in key spots, but one wonders how much longer can he turn to Kelly in tight games.
Jul 10 2018Kelly, who had left his previous outing after experiencing lightheadedness, threw a scoreless eighth inning in Monday's 5-0 win over Texas. He allowed a hit and struck out two.Kelly shook off a leadoff single to record his third consecutive scoreless outing. Manager Alex Cora still has confidence in the Kelly, who had an 8.31 ERA during the month of June. The right-hander has pitched the eighth inning in eight of his previous nine appearances.
Jul 9 2018Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Kelly (illness) was available out of the bullpen during Sunday's 7-4 win over the Royals.Kelly experienced some lightheadedness during his appearance Saturday, but felt considerably better after hydrating overnight. He ultimately wasn't used in the series finale, but Cora stressed that Kelly's absence was mostly precautionary with the Red Sox getting extra reinforcement for the bullpen with the additions of callups William Cuevas and Ryan Brasier. Kelly, who maintains a 3.41 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in 39 appearances on the season, should reprise his setup role Monday against the Rangers if the contest is competitive.
Jul 7 2018Kelly left Saturday's game with an apparent injury, Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald reports.Kelly got the first two outs of the eighth inning but some sort of injury prevented him from completing the frame. He left the game after a brief visit from the team trainer and manager Alex Cora. Brandon Workman replaced Kelly on the mound.
Jul 7 2018Kelly left Saturday's game because he was feeling lightheaded, Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald reports. He's still being evaluated. The hard-throwing right-hander was not experiencing any chest pains, according to Christopher Smith of MassLive.com, but the Red Sox will continue to monitor Kelly to be sure he's OK. If this issue were to cost Kelly additional time, Matt Barnes would presumably move up and take on primary setup duties in front of closer Craig Kimbrel.
May 26 2018Kelly walked one and struck out one over a scoreless inning to log his eighth hold of the season in Friday's 6-2 win over Atlanta.Kelly hasn't allowed a run over his last seven seven outings, holding opponents to one hit and two walks over 6.1 innings. After a spectacular flame-out on Opening Day, Kelly has been electric out of Boston's bullpen. In 22 appearances since he allowed four runs in a third of an inning March 29, Kelly has allowed one run on 10 hits and six walks while striking out 25 over 23.1 innings.
May 13 2018Kelly got the save against the Blue Jays on Sunday, allowing no baserunners with no walks or strikeouts in a clean ninth inning to close out Boston's 5-3 victory.Manager Alex Cora was forced to get creative without the services of Craig Kimbrel and Carson Smith (rest) and starter Drew Pomeranz only lasting four innings, so Kelly ended up getting the save to close out a strong effort from Boston's bullpen -- which shut out Toronto over five innings to preserve the victory. Kelly's having a good season with a 2.33 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP over 19.1 innings but Kimbrel is one of the most dominant closers in baseball, so Kelly is not likely to see many save opportunities aside from the occasional spot appearance.
May 2 2018Kelly (suspension) was reinstated to the Red Sox's active roster prior to Wednesday's game, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.Kelly was forced to serve a six-game suspension due to his role in a benches-clearing brawl against the Yankees on April 12. The reliever will slide back into his high-leverage role immediately, and has logged a 3.09 ERA and 0.86 WHIP over 11.2 innings in 11 appearances this season.
Apr 27 2018Kelly, who began serving a six game suspension Thursday, has held left-handed batters to one hit over 20 at-bats.The right-handed Kelly has become manager Alex Cora's sneaky weapon against left-handed batters, but the manager will not have his weapon back until May 2. Without Kelly, Cora will look to a traditional left-hander, Brian Johnson, to get left-handed hitters out.
Apr 26 2018Kelly's six-game suspension was upheld and he will begin to serve it Thursday, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.Kelly received the suspension back on April 12, but he was able to play in the meantime while he appealed the decision. With Major League Baseball refusing to budge from their initial penalty, the right-hander will be sidelined for nearly a week. He's eligible to return Wednesday against the Royals.
Apr 12 2018Kelly will be suspended six games and fined for his role in Wednesday's altercation against the Yankees, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.Kelly was ejected from the game after hitting Tyler Austin with a pitch that lead to the second bench-clearing brawl of Wednesday's affair. Austin was also given a suspension, his for five games. Both players will appeal the ruling and be available for Thursday's series finale.
Apr 11 2018Kelly was ejected in the seventh inning of Wednesday's 10-7 loss to the Yankees after hitting Tyler Austin with a pitch that precipitated a bench-cleaning brawl.Austin slid into second base spikes high on Brock Holt back in the third inning, and Kelly took it upon himself to send the Yankee a message in response, just missing him with an 0-1 pitch before drilling him in the hip with a 98 mph fastball two pitches later. Expect Kelly to face additional league discipline after the incident.
Apr 1 2018Kelly pitched a scoreless ninth inning to collect his first save of the season during Sunday's 2-1 win over Tampa Bay. He allowed two hits and struck out two batters.Craig Kimbrel closed out the previous two games, so it wasn't surprising to see him receive the day off Sunday. Kelly allowed four runs and only retired a single batter during his appearance on Opening Day, so this was a much better showing. Still, the hard-throwing righty shouldn't be viewed as a reliable source of saves as long as Kimbrel is healthy.
Mar 29 2018Kelly allowed four runs on one hit and three walks in a third of an inning in Thursday's 6-4 loss to the Rays.Kelly came on to do what he was projected to do: caretake a lead through the eighth inning. But an old bugaboo -- command -- did him in. He ranked second among relievers last season in fastball velocity, but can't always harness that power. The bullpen meltdown is exaggerated because it was Opening Day, but Kelly will continue to get setup work.
Feb 23 2018Kelly is set to pitch Sunday after taking a comebacker off his shin Wednesday, Chad Jennings of the Boston Herald reports.X-rays after the incident came back negative and Kelly should have a normal spring. He'll be in the late-inning relief mix this season along with Carson Smith, Matt Barnes and Tyler Thornburg.
Feb 21 2018Kelly is fine after taking a ball off his shin Wednesday morning, Evan Drellich of NBC Sports Boston reports.Kelly was struck by a batted ball during live batting practice. He appeared fine immediately after the incident, walking off under his own power. X-rays have confirmed that there is no issue.
Feb 21 2018Kelly was struck in the shin by a batted ball during live batting practice and is receiving precautionary X-rays, Evan Drellich of NBC Sports Boston reports..Kelly walked off under his own power, and the Red Sox believe he's uninjured. More details should be known once the X-ray results are in. It doesn't sound serious, but if there does turn out to be a fracture, Kelly would presumably miss some time at the start of the season.
Jan 12 2018Kelly agreed to a one-year, $3.825 million deal with the Red Sox on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports reports. This was the final offseason that he is an arbitration-eligible player, and the right-hander received a $1.025 million increase from last year. Kelly was able to have a bounce-back campaign in 2017, posting a 2.79 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with a 52:27 K:BB in 58 innings of relief. He should be in the mix to work high-leverage situations this upcoming season, but still leaves something to be desired with his strikeout and command issues.
Sep 20 2017Kelly (4-1) struck out the side in the 10th inning to earn the victory in Boston's 1-0 win over Baltimore in 11 innings Tuesday. The Red Sox have no shortage of relievers putting up impressive numbers during the month of September. Add Kelly to that mix. He pitched three perfect innings in an extra-inning win over Tampa Bay last Friday and is looking like he'll be a key bullpen piece should the Red Sox qualify for the postseason.
Sep 16 2017Kelly retired all nine batters he faced in Friday's 13-6 extra-inning win over the Rays.Kelly carried the Red Sox from the 11th through the 13th innings in what may have been his finest performance of the season. While his ERA stands at 2.72, Kelly's 3.67 FIP speaks to a less effective reliever that hasn't been completely trusted in high-leverage spots. The makeup of Boston's setup men leading up to closer Craig Kimbrel has been a dance choreographed by manager John Farrell all season, so Kelly's effort Friday could alter the setup crew once again.
Aug 5 2017Kelly (hamstring) was reinstated from the DL on Saturday, Tim Britton of the Providence Journal reports.Kelly wound up being sidelined for three weeks, although he hasn't pitched in a major-league game since July 9. Throughout the course of the 2017 season, the right-hander has posted a sparkling 1.49 ERA and 1.10 WHIP over 36.1 innings. Kelly figures to reside in high-leverage situations upon his return, although Addison Reed may be in line to work the eighth-inning setup role for Craig Kimbrel.
Aug 3 2017Kelly (hamstring) will be activated from the disabled list Saturday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. While Kelly was originally expected to return Friday, the Red Sox will give him an extra day to rest up before reinstating him. Kelly is expected to factor back into the setup mix upon activation, but he could see his role slightly diminished due to the recent acquisition of Addison Reed.
Aug 2 2017Kelly (hamstring) struck out one in a scoreless inning got Triple-A Pawtucket on Wednesday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.Kelly looked sharp in his first rehab appearance for the Paw Sox, and it looks like he should be back with the big club by Friday. The righty flamethrower, who has been out since July 12, will likely factor back into the setup mix upon his activation.
Jul 31 2017Kelly (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket on Wednesday, Evan Drellich of CSN New England reports.Kelly just progressed to throwing to hitters over the weekend, but it seems like the Red Sox are confident enough in his health to send him into game action just a few days later. No word has surfaced as to how long he'll stay on his assignment, but things should become clear once the team sees how his ailing hamstring reacts to Wednesday's appearance.
Jul 30 2017Kelly (hamstring) will throw live batting practice Monday, Stephen Hewitt of the Boston Herald reports.Throwing live batting practice should be the final step before Kelly heads out on what figures to be a short rehabilitation assignment. Kelly figures to be part of the setup group, pitching the seventh and eighth innings.
Jul 25 2017Kelly (hamstring) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.Kelly is scheduled to throw another bullpen session Friday, and if all goes according to plan, he'll appear in a minor-league rehab game shortly after that. It appears that Kelly could be able to rejoin the Red Sox's bullpen in about a week's time.
Jul 20 2017Kelly (hamstring) expects to throw a bullpen this weekend when the team travels to Los Angeles, Evan Drellich of WEEI.com reports.Kelly has been recovering from a left hamstring strain that has kept him off the mound since July 9. The reliever appears to be close to returning, and will likely be reevaluated by the club if he's able to complete a bullpen session at some point this weekend.
Jul 16 2017Kelly (hamstring) will continue to play catch and is hopeful to return from the 10-day disabled list in the near future, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. It's too early to determine if Kelly will be able to come off the DL when first eligible July 20, but it sounds like the hamstring strain isn't nearly as concerning as the one he suffered in 2014. Kelly has been quite solid in a setup role for the Red Sox this season, turning in a 1.49 ERA and 1.10 WHIP and gathering 11 holds over 36.1 innings.
Jul 15 2017Kelly was placed on the disabled list Saturday due to a left hamstring strain, The Boston Herald's Michael Silverman reports. In a surprising move that seemingly came out of nowhere, the Red Sox put their eighth-inning man on the DL prior to Saturday's game against the Yankees. He hasn't pitched since prior to the All-Star break, so the team will backdate his placement retroactive to July 12, making him eligible to return next Sunday. In a corresponding move, the club recalled Brandon Workman from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Jul 1 2017Kelly has a 1.07 ERA and 1.10 WHIP with 24 strikeouts over 33.2 innings this season. The former starter hasn't allowed a run since April 30, a stretch of 20.1 innings where he has given up only 13 hits. Kelly has 10 holds for the season, seven of which came in June as he shifted into the setup role for closer Craig Kimbrel, and should see consistent opportunities going forward in his current role.
Jun 8 2017Kelly has a 1.42 ERA and 1.11 WHIP over 25.1 innings this season. The former starter has tossed 12 straight scoreless innings since the start of May with only six hits and two walks allowed. The 28-year-old is seeing more high-leverage situations and has recorded a hold in three of his last four appearances. Kelly has a low K/9 (6.4) thus far but has kept the ball down with a GB/FB rate of 1.90 during his scoreless streak.
May 20 2017Kelly struck out two batters during a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning in Friday's 3-2 extra-inning loss to the Athletics.Kelly has earned the trust of manager John Farrell who is buoyed by the reliever's scoreless stretch of 7.1 innings over eight games. The right hander has allowed five hits and walked just one during that span while throwing strikes on 66 percent of his pitches. He's clearly moving ahead of Matt Barnes for eighth-inning work.
May 16 2017Kelly has not allowed a run on four hits and a walk while striking out five over his last 5.2 innings, spanning six games.Kelly's good fortunes coincide with a downturn in those of Matt Barnes and are shaking up manager John Farrell's late-inning relief pattern. Kelly worked in a traditional setup role in his last game, bridging the eighth inning to closer Craig Kimbrel. It's all about throwing strikes for Kelly. He's thrown strikes on 65 percent of his pitches during his recent run, up from 59 percent over his first 10 games when he walked eight batters in 13.1 innings. If he can sustain the command and limit the walks, Kelly has the stuff to be an effective setup guy.
Apr 29 2017Kelly allowed two hits and a run in two-thirds of an inning in Friday's 5-4 win over the Cubs.Kelly's seventh-inning wild pitch allowed an inherited runner to score and put one his runners in scoring position to be plated on a Ben Zobrist single. He had gone four straight appearances and 6.2 innings without allowing a run before Friday, which turned out to be his first hold of the season. He's flirted with danger this season, walking six in 12.2 innings with a 3.83 FIP suggesting his 2.13 ERA won't hold up. The lack of consistent control, which has reared itself time and again throughout his career, is the main reason why manager John Farrell can't fully trust Kelly in an eighth-inning role.
Apr 12 2017Kelly (illness) allowed one walk in a scoreless ninth inning in Boston's 8-1 win over Baltimore on Tuesday.Kelly, like several others in Boston's clubhouse, had been feeling the effects of the flu. Tuesday's performance was his first since last Friday. He's now firmly behind Matt Barnes in terms of the eighth-inning role and needs to post a few scoreless outings to get back in the good graces of manager John Farrell.
Apr 9 2017Manager John Farrell said that Kelly (illness) wouldn't be an option out of the bullpen for Sunday's game against the Tigers, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports.Kelly was back with the team Sunday morning and seems to have mostly recovered from the flu, but it looks like the Red Sox want to give him some additional time off to regain stamina. With another day off to recover, the right-hander could be available to pitch in the series finale Monday.
Apr 9 2017Kelly (illness) is with the Red Sox for Sunday's game against the Tigers, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.Kelly experienced flu-like symptoms over the weekend and wasn't available for Saturday's game.
Apr 8 2017Kelly is dealing with flu-like symptoms and won't be available for Saturday's game against the Tigers, Brian MacPherson of The Providence Journal reports.Kelly is the latest victim of a flu bug that's been going around the Red Sox clubhouse as Mookie Betts, Hanley Ramirez, and Robbie Ross have already missed time due to illness. The right-handed reliever has thrown 2.1 innings of shutout baseball to begin the season, earning the win Wednesday against Pittsburgh. Consider him day-to-day going forward.
Apr 6 2017Kelly pitched the final two innings of Wednesday's 3-0 win over the Pirates. He allowed one run without a walk or a strikeout to pick up the win.Kelly has fallen out of the eighth-inning role, perhaps temporarily, because of a subpar final two weeks of spring training. The right-hander threw a respectable 17 strikes in 27 pitches and didn't a walk a batter Wednesday. That's a step in the right direction for Kelly, who needs to prove he's commanding consistently for Farrell to entrust him as a lock-down eighth-inning reliever.
Apr 3 2017Kelly watched from the bullpen Monday as manager John Farrell went with left-hander Robby Scott and right-hander Heath Hembree to pitch the eighth inning in Boston's 5-3 win over the Pirates, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports. Farrell said following the game that he will have to mix and match "without a lock-down eighth-inning guy."It was surprising to hear the manager's comments after he anointed Kelly the fill-in setup guy when it became apparent Tyler Thornburg (shoulder) was going to start the season on the 10-day disabled list. Kelly looked the part of a setup guy last September, but his inability to consistently throw strikes reared itself this spring as he walked eight in 9.2 innings. Until Kelly improves his strike-throwing, he won't be the only eighth-inning option for Farrell.
Mar 28 2017Kelly is expected to be Boston's set up man after it was learned Tyler Thornburg (shoulder) will "most likely" begin the season on the disabled list, Tim Britton of the Providence Journal reports.Kelly flourished as a full-time reliever in 2016, but has had an uneven spring, with seven strikeouts and seven walks over eight innings. Manager John Farrell feels Kelly is trying to be too perfect on every pitch and wants the right-hander to trust his stuff and get ahead of batters. As the eighth-inning reliever, Kelly is in position for save opportunities when closer Craig Kimbrel is not available.
Mar 18 2017Kelly will be Boston's primary setup man if Tyler Thornburg (arm) is not ready by the regular season, Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. The Red Sox still feel Thornburg will be ready for the start of the season, though he may not be ready for the high-leverage situations for which they acquired him. In that event, Kelly will move up from the seventh inning to set up closer Craig Kimbrel.
Mar 14 2017Kelly walked one and struck out one in one scoreless inning Tuesday against the Blue Jays.Kelly has yet to give up a run in five spring innings over five appearances. He'll be a full-time reliever in 2017 and is in position, along with Tyler Thornburg, to set up for closer Craig Kimbrel. With Thornburg having been delayed the last couple of weeks due to arm issues, a product of adjusting to the training program of a new team, Kelly stands to increase his role should Thornburg open the season on the disabled list or in a state of reduced effectiveness.
Feb 21 2017Kelly shortened the arm action in his delivery last season when he was moved to the bullpen full time, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports. After moving to the pen, Kelly had a 1.02 ERA and 1.019 WHIP, striking out 21 and walking five over 17.2 innings.Instead of raring back and seeing how high he could register on the radar gun, Kelly kept his arm closer to his body, an adjustment that led to a more consistent release point and allowed him to stay on top of his pitches. That in turn led to consistent location of those pitches -- a fastball directed to the outside corner, stayed on the corner. And likewise pitches thrown on the inside corner. No longer were his pitches leaking over the plate where they could get hammered. It's a whole new world for Kelly in the pen. He'll be an important setup piece for closer Craig Kimbrel and will get fireman duty in high-leverage, non-save situations.
Feb 13 2017Kelly's defined role for 2017 will be as a reliever, Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reports. After five years of tempting both the Cardinals and Red Sox as a potential starter, Kelly made the transition to full-time reliever during the second half of last season. The right-hander struck out 21 while allowing just two earned runs in 17.2 innings out of the pen. He and his high-90s fastball will be called on mostly for seventh-inning duty.
Jan 13 2017Kelly agreed to a one-year deal with the Red Sox on Friday, avoiding arbitration. The terms of the agreement were not made available. Kelly made the successful transition from starter to reliever last season and figures to occupy a mid-to-late-leverage role once again in 2017.
Sep 26 2016Kelly pitched the final 2.2 innings in Boston's 3-2 extra-inning win over the Rays on Sunday. He allowed two hits and struck out four to earn the win.Kelly came on in the eighth inning after Tampa Bay had tied the game and induced a double-play grounder to ward off any further damage. It was another strong effort for Kelly and a sign of the growing confidence manager John Farrell has in the fire-balling right-hander, who has picked up more high-leverage work over the month of September.
Sep 16 2016Kelly was credited with the win Thursday night after pitching a scoreless ninth inning in Boston's 7-5 walk-off win over the Yankees. He allowed two hits and a walk while striking out two.Kelly made it squirmy, loading the bases with one out, but escaped damage, leaving the deficit manageable for Boston, who went on to score five in the bottom of the ninth to win it. The right-hander with the high-90s fastball has not allowed a run since being called up from Triple-A Pawtucket at the beginning of September. In seven innings, he's allowed five hits and four walks while striking out 11.
Sep 6 2016Kelly was used in the eighth inning of Boston's 2-1 loss to San Diego on Monday. He struck out two Padres in his scoreless inning.Interesting to see Kelly get the call in the eighth inning of a tight game. It was his second consecutive appearance in the eighth, though his first one had little on the line. Since being called up, Kelly has struck out four in two innings without giving up a run. High K/9 numbers characterized Kelly's relief stint while pitching for Triple-A Pawtucket. If he keeps that up, expect to see manager John Farrell, who is desperate to find some consistent arms for high-leverage situations, use Kelly more often as a bridge to closer Craig Kimbrel.
Sep 2 2016The Red Sox recalled Kelly from Triple-A Pawtucket on Friday.Kelly posted a woeful 7.62 ERA over nine outings with the Red Sox earlier this season and was sent to the minors Aug. 1. However, he appeared to turn things around with Pawtucket, posting a 0.82 ERA and 16:1 K:BB in 11 innings over nine August outings. Kelly can start games, but he will likely work out of the bullpen in his latest go-around with the big club.
Sep 2 2016Kelly will be called up to Boston on Friday and join the Red Sox in Oakland, Tim Britton of the Providence Journal reports.Kelly stands a realistic shot at being a key bullpen piece as manager John Farrell seeks to shore up the eighth-inning bridge to closer Craig KImbrel. The right-hander has been dominant since returning to Triple-A Pawtucket in early August. He's allowed one run on six hits in 11 innings, walking one and striking out 16.
Aug 24 2016Kelly has allowed one run on five hits without a walk while striking out 11 in eight innings since he was optioned back to Triple-A Pawtucket at the beginning of August.Given the precarious state of Boston's relievers leading up to closer Craig Kimbrel, Kelly seems like he could help, but while manager John Farrell acknowledged to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe how well he's throwing, the manager added "there are some limitations how we get him here right now." The implication being that Kelly will come back to Boston when rosters expand Sept. 1.
Jul 27 2016Kelly had a one-pitch appearance Tuesday, retiring Detroit's Ian Kinsler on a slider in Boston's 9-8 loss, Julian Benbow of the Boston Globe reports.Kelly is adjusting to life out of the bullpen and part of that adjustment is using all of the pitches available to him. When he was called up to Boston over the weekend, he told reporters his mindset is trying to strike everyone out as a reliever. On Monday, he relied heavily on the fastball, hitting 100 mph multiple times, but velocity didn't stop Detroit's Justin Upton from tripling and eventually scoring the winning run. "The same thing applies in this role as it did while he was starting," Boston manager John Farrell said. "His need to use the secondary pitches exists. That's going to always be a part of Joe's plan for success - that he can't rely just on velocity because as we've seen, the swing-and-miss rate is low despite upper-90s to 100 miles an hour." Going forward, Kelly said he'll need to rely on his slider more often in order to keep hitters off balance.
Jul 26 2016Kelly allowed a run on two hits in one inning of relief in Monday night's 4-2 loss to Detroit. He didn't walk nor strike out a batter.Kelly was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket over the weekend to bring his flame-throwing arm out of the Boston bullpen. He touched 100 mph on seven of his pitches in his first relief appearance this season. Unfortunately, if your fastball is missing location in the majors, velocity doesn't mean much. "A lot of power, a lot of velocity, (but) some inconsistent command to get behind in the count 2-1 to Upton," manager John Farrell told MassLive.com. "He left a fastball out on the plate and (Upton) was able to drive it the other way." Kelly will continue to work in a relief role for Boston and will get more opportunities to harness his arsenal and succeed in the pen.
Jul 24 2016Kelly will be called up from Triple-A Pawtucket to Boston on Sunday, according to a source, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.Boston's bullpen, with some assistance from its utility fielders masquerading as outfielders, imploded during an 11-9 loss to the Twins on Saturday. The casualty from that loss was Heath Hembree, who was optioned to Pawtucket immediately following the game, creating a spot on the roster for Kelly, who has not allowed a run while striking out nine in five innings out of the bullpen for the PawSox.
Jul 24 2016Kelly was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday, according to Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal. The speculation about Kelly being called up to Boston started immediately following Saturday night's 11-9 loss to the Twins, a game in which the bullpen coughed up a three-run lead by allowing six runs on eight hits in 1.1 innings. Kelly will be used in a multi-inning role.
Jul 24 2016Kelly was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports. All six of Kelly's previous appearances with the Red Sox have come as a starter, but after struggling mightily in that capacity, he'll work as a reliever in this stint with big club. He seemed to take well to bullpen duties during his time at Pawtucket, allowing no runs over five innings and striking out nine batters while walking only one. The Red Sox will likely ease him into the relief mix in lower-leverage situations initially, but with top bullpen arms Craig Kimbrel (knee) and Koji Uehara (pectoral) on the DL, Kelly's role could quickly grow if he finds early success.
Jul 24 2016Kelly may be called up to Boston after the team optioned Heath Hembree to Triple-A Pawtucket following Saturday night's game, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports.Manager John Farrell did not make an announcement, but he implied Hembree's demotion opens up a spot for Kelly, who has struck out nine and walked one without being charged with a run in five innings pitched out the bullpen for the PawSox.
Jul 18 2016Kelly, who is converting from starter to reliever at Triple-A Pawtucket, is not on the verge of returning to Boston, Jen McCaffrey of MassLive.com reports. There was buzz after Kelly recorded a two-inning save in dominating fashion for the PawSox on Friday, speculating that the right-hander would be rejoining Boston's roster this week, but manager John Farrell put an end to that talk. "While this transition is going as we had hoped in terms of his converting into a reliever working strictly out of the stretch, there's been no discussion as a return date to here yet," said the manager. The early results are encouraging, but we need to remember it was Kelly's inconsistency that got him removed from the rotation and optioned to Pawtucket. The Red Sox need to see a few more outings from Kelly before bringing him up to Boston.
Jul 16 2016Kelly pitched two scoreless innings Friday to pick up the save for Triple-A Pawtucket. He allowed one hit and struck out three without walking a batter.Kelly was impressive in his first appearance out of the bullpen at the Triple-A level, striking out the side in the ninth inning -- all swinging strikes. If Kelly sustains this type of success in a relief role, he could be called up to Boston to shore up a bullpen that has shown some cracks this season. Red Sox manager John Farrell told Christopher Smith of Mass Live that he wants Kelly to be a multi-inning reliever, a role in which Kelly can use all of his pitches. "I wouldn't want a pitcher to eliminate a pitch because he's in another role," Farrell said. "Now, it's going to be dependent on what attack plan for a given hitter. There may be games where his curveball may be more of a feel for him than his slider."
Jul 8 2016Kelly is scheduled to make two more relief appearances with Single-A Lowell on Saturday and Monday, Scott Lauber of ESPN.com reports. The plan is for Kelly to rejoin Triple-A Pawtucket Thursday after making both of his scheduled rehab relief appearances. Red Sox manager John Farrell wants to use Kelly as a multi-inning reliever when he eventually makes his way back to Boston. Kelly coming back as a reliever will pretty much diminish his fantasy value, but an injury to a starter in the current rotation could change that very quickly.
Jul 7 2016Kelly (groin) will continue his rehab program with Single-A Lowell, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.Kelly made his first rehab appearance on Wednesday, tossing a scoreless inning in Single-A Lowell's game against Auburn. He figures to throw relief outings on Friday and Monday for Lowell before a possible call up decision is made. Given the All-Star Break is just around the corner, the 28-year-old will likely make his return to the Red Sox when they begin a series against the Yankees on July 15.
Jun 21 2016Kelly (groin) is expected to throw his first bullpen session since his injury this coming weekend, Christopher Smith of Mass Live reports.Manager John Farrell said Kelly will continue to long toss until he throws off a mound. The manager, according to Jen McCaffrey of Mass Live, also said during a weekly radio interview that the team may have Kelly move to the bullpen "at some point."
Jun 15 2016Kelly (groin) has been throwing off flat ground, Evan Drellich of the Boston Herald reports.Manager John Farrell indicated that he'd like to see Kelly be able to throw from 180 feet before progressing to throwing off a mound, so it sounds as though Kelly remains without a set date to return to action. The 28-year-old had been sent down to the minors after struggling to a 8.46 ERA through six major league starts, so he figures to remain at Triple-A at least temporarily once healthy.
Jun 8 2016Kelly has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 strain of his right groin, and will miss his next start for triple-a Pawtucket, Scott Lauber of ESPN.com reports.Kelly was roughed up for seven earned runs in his last start for the Red Sox, and was subsequently sent to Pawtucket to work on some mechanical adjustments. Unfortunately, he suffered a right-groin injury in his Tuesday start, which has since been diagnosed as a Grade 1 strain. He will officially miss his next scheduled start, and there is currently no timetable for a return.
Jun 8 2016Kelly (groin) will likely miss his next Triple-A start, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports.Kelly left his last start after suffering a right-groin injury and was examined in Boston on Wednesday before making the determination to skip a start. It was his first minor league start since being sent down, as he struck out five and allowed three runs over 4.2 innings, but the club will likely want to ensure Kelly returns to full health before even considering calling him back up.
Jun 7 2016Kelly left Tuesday's game for Triple-A Pawtucket with a right groin injury, the Providence Journal's Bill Koch reports.Kelly has been working on some mechanical adjustments with the Red Sox's Triple-A affiliate, but may be sidelined for a spell after suffering a groin injury Tuesday. The Red Sox are waiting for a fifth starter to emerge as the season goes on, with Kelly hoping to be that guy if he could make some tweaks in the minors. His status will be updated when more details about the injury are released.
Jun 2 2016Kelly said he needs to make some mechanical adjustments, which he believes contributed to his lack of fastball command in Wednesday night's loss to the Orioles, the Boston Globe reports. "There's a couple of different things, arm slot dropping a little bit the last couple of starts, which is lack of fastball command," he said. "It's just something I have to stay on top of the ball a little bit better. Just need to command."Kelly has put up two consecutive horrific starts -- 12 runs allowed on 16 hits and six walks in seven innings -- and earned himself a southbound ride on I-95 to Triple-A Pawtucket. For whatever reason, Kelly seems to lose his mechanics quite easily. He'll get the opportunity to work on it in Triple-A, but who knows the shape and state of Boston's rotation when he does get himself right. If, say, Clay Buchholz gets a second chance as a starter and is pitching well, there'll be no room for Kelly. It has long been believed that Kelly has the stuff to be a good reliever. If that's the case, Kelly can be of use to Boston, who lost Carson Smith (elbow) for the season and needs to find setup help for Koji Uehara and Junichi Tazawa.
Jun 1 2016The Red Sox optioned Kelly to Triple-A Pawtucket following Wednesday's game, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.Kelly was tagged for seven earned runs in just 2.1 innings in Wednesday's loss to the Orioles and now owns an 8.46 ERA on the season, so the team decided to take advantage of a remaining option and give him some time in the minors to iron things out. The Red Sox will not necessarily need a fifth starter for the considerable future thanks to off days in their schedule, so it remains to be seen who will take Kelly's spot in the rotation. Reliever Noe Ramirez will take Kelly's place on the roster for the time being.
Jun 1 2016Kelly (2-0) pitched 2.1 innings, allowing seven runs, seven hits and three walks while striking out one in Wednesday's game against the Orioles. He did not factor in the decision.Since the right-hander returned from the DL (shoulder) on May 21, he's been inconsistent. In his first start back on May 21 against the Indians, Kelly flirted with a no-hitter. However, in his ensuing start on May 27 against the Blue Jays, Kelly lasted just 4.2 innings and gave up five runs on nine hits (including two home runs). Wednesday, he once again was knocked around pretty good, but luckily escaped without suffering his first loss of the season. The 27-year-old will take an 8.46 ERA and a 2.24 WHIP into his next start on Tuesday against the Orioles.
May 27 2016Kelly allowed five runs on nine hits, walking three and striking out eight, but lasted just 4.2 innings in a no-decision against the Blue Jays on Friday night.Kelly collected an impressive eight strikeouts, but he also struggled with location, needing 94 pitches (just 54 strikes) to record 13 outs. He also served up a pair of home runs as his ERA ballooned to 6.30 on the season. He has good stuff, but fights to maintain consistency, making him a risky fantasy play when he takes on Baltimore in his next start.
May 22 2016Kelly (2-0) surrendered only one hit and three walks in 6.2 innings of shutout ball during Saturday's 9-1 victory over the Indians. He struck out seven.Kelly made quite a statement in his return to the mound from a DL stint due to right shoulder impingement, carrying a no-hit bid into the seventh. Juan Uribe broke things up with a double to the right-center gap after the 27-year-old had recorded two outs in the frame, bringing an end to his afternoon after 104 pitches. Kelly will try to carry over the considerable momentum into his next start, which will come against J.A. Happ and the Blue Jays next Friday at Rogers Centre.
May 21 2016Kelly (shoulder) has been activated off the 15-day disabled list and he will start Saturday against the Indians. After missing a month due to a right shoulder impingement, Kelly will get the start Saturday at Fenway Park. Kelly got off to a rough start this season, notching a 9.35 ERA through three starts before landing on the DL. However, he did have a remarkable 11.42 K/9 in that stretch and he'll be facing an Indians team that strikes out 21.9 percent of the time.
May 21 2016Kelly (shoulder) will be activated off the disabled list to start Saturday's game against the Indians, the Boston Globe reports.Kelly made three starts while out on rehab, including his final outing when he got up to 92 pitches over 6.1 innings. The radar gun tracked him at 98 miles per hour on his final fastball before leaving the mound. "To the point of the progression of the number of pitches thrown, the velocity that he held, the command of his pitches all have been very solid," said manager John Farrell. "His work here yesterday in the bullpen was strong. So he's set to go."
May 17 2016Kelly (shoulder) is expected to start Saturday against the Indians, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports. The right-hander seemed the most likely candidate for the start with Sean O'Sullivan designated for assignment and Eduardo Rodriguez still experiencing knee issues, and manager John Farrell all but confirmed that Kelly will indeed get the nod. Kelly remains difficult to trust, but he did turn in a strong performance in his most recent start with Triple-A Pawtucket, tossing 6.1 scoreless frames while striking out 10. He's issued a total of three walks in his three rehab starts (14.1 innings).
May 16 2016Kelly (shoulder) is an option to start for Boston on Saturday, Mass Live reports.Kelly tossed his third rehabilitation start Monday, getting his pitch count up to 92 and pitching 6.1 scoreless innings for Triple-A Pawtucket. He allowed five hits and a walk while striking out 10. The Red Sox were rained out Monday, forcing them to use two pitchers in a doubleheader Wednesday. This means they'll need a fifth starter Saturday, and Kelly would be pitching on normal rest.
May 13 2016Kelly (shoulder) will make another rehab start Monday at Triple-A Pawtucket, Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reports. With Eduardo Rodriguez also nearing a return from the disabled list, the Red Sox will have to make a decision between Kelly, Rodriguez, and Steven Wright for the No. 5 starter spot. Wright has more than held his own thus far while filling in, but his performance in his next scheduled start Wednesday in Kansas City may go a long way toward guiding the team's decision.
May 12 2016Kelly (shoulder) may not require another rehab start before coming off the disabled list, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports.Kelly is scheduled to be evaluated by team doctors Friday in Boston, and if all goes well, it appears the Red Sox would be comfortable with activating him without sending him out for another rehab start. However, there is no official timetable for Kelly's return at this point. He has been sidelined for roughly three weeks due to a shoulder impingement, but he's been able to make a pair of starts at Triple-A Pawtucket and has looked solid in those outings. Friday's medical checkup figures to shed more light on Kelly's potential return date.
May 11 2016Kelly allowed one run on five hits and one walk while striking out three in five innings during his second rehabilitation start for Triple-A Pawtucket.Kelly had better command in his second start, throwing 48 of his 77 pitches for strikes. According to Pawtucket's play-by-play guy, Will Flemming, the right-hander's final two pitches of the night hit 97 and 98 mph. The arm strength is good; all that's left is to get the pitch count up. The organization probably wants to make at least one more rehab start. With both Kelly and Eduardo Rodriguez (knee) nearing returns, manager John Farrell will have some decisions to make regarding who's in and who's out of Boston's rotation.
May 7 2016Kelly (shoulder) tossed three innings in his first rehabilitation start for Triple-A Pawtucket on Friday, the Providence Journal reports. He allowed one run on two hits and a walk while striking out three.Kelly had some difficulty commanding as just 28 of his 52 pitches went for strikes, but he was overall pleased with the outing. "My mind feels clear that the situation, the pain, everything I was feeling is gone," said the right-hander. He didn't let loose with the fastball until his final inning, when he eventually touched 95 mph. Kelly is expected to make at least two more rehab starts, according to the Boston Globe.
May 4 2016Kelly (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Tuesday and is set to make a rehabilitation start for Triple-A Pawtucket on Friday, the Boston Globe reports.Manager John Farrell said Kelly will need at least two rehab starts. The question remains whether or not Kelly returns to Boston's rotation. With Eduardo Rodriguez (knee) nearing a return to Boston, he will likely replace Henry Owens in the current iteration of the rotation. There isn't an obvious replacement when Kelly is ready to return. Steven Wright, who pitched well again Tuesday, deserves to hold his spot. That would leave Clay Buchholz, who has not pitched well to start the season, but has a track record of rebounding from poor starts.
Apr 29 2016Kelly (shoulder) threw a 35-pitch bullpen session Friday, Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reports.Kelly has been on the 15-day DL since April 20 and is now beginning to throw bullpen sessions as part of his rehabilitation. He is expected to throw another bullpen session Tuesday and, depending on how it goes, could be close to starting a rehab assignment.
Apr 27 2016Kelly (shoulder) began a throwing program, playing catch from out to 90 feet Tuesday, the Boston Herald reports.Kelly landed on the 15-day disabled list with a shoulder impingement and has no timetable for a return. By the time he's ready to pitch again, there might not be room for him in the starting rotation: the Red Sox should have Eduardo Rodriguez (knee) back and Steven Wright (1.40 ERA) may very well have solidified his hold on a spot in the rotation.
Apr 20 2016Wednesday's MRI on Kelly's shoulder revealed no structural damage, but the Red Sox have yet to release a timetable for his return, Mike Silverman of the Boston Herald reports.Kelly was officially diagnosed with a shoulder impingement following Wednesday's MRI, but it's still too early for the team's medical staff to approximate a potential return date for the right-handed starter. His absence leaves the Red Sox in a lurch in terms of their rotation; however, the club won't need to fill Kelly's spot until Sunday. At this point, the early candidates to fill in for Kelly are Henry Owens, Roenis Elias, or Brian Johnson.
Apr 20 2016Kelly (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.Kelly left Tuesday's start with a right shoulder impingement after throwing just 23 pitches. The Red Sox have recalled a pair of relievers, Noe Ramirez and William Cuevas, in order to help eat up innings for the next few days. Boston will likely call up one of its more major league-ready starters, such as Henry Owens, later in the week to take Kelly's spot in the rotation. As for Kelly, he still figures to undergo a battery of tests on his shoulder before a more concrete timetable for a return is able to be established.
Apr 19 2016Kelly (shoulder) will land on the 15-day DL after Tuesday's game, the Boston Herald's Evan Drellich reports. He left Tuesday's start after 23 pitches with a right shoulder impingement. Manager John Farrell said he expects Kelly to have a full set of tests on his shoulder, and that the Red Sox may make an additional roster move after the long night for the bullpen Tuesday. It is unclear how long Kelly will be out, but in mixed leagues without DL spots, it might be time to take a look at what's available on the waiver wire. Speaking of which, Henry Owens figures to be the obvious option to jump into the rotation after last pitching Monday for Triple-A Pawtucket.
Apr 19 2016Kelly left Tuesday's game in the first inning with a right shoulder impingement, Tim Britton of the Providence Journal reports. The injury ended Kelly's outing after 23 pitches, and seems like the type of issue that could at least threaten to push him to the DL. Look for the team to elaborate further on Kelly's condition in the coming days. Henry Owens, who last pitched for Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday, would be the obvious candidate to step in for Kelly should he miss Sunday's start.
Apr 19 2016Kelly left Tuesday's game against the Rays with an apparent injury after facing only four batters, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports. It wasn't obvious what was ailing Kelly, but he seemed to stretch his shoulder a bit after striking out Corey Dickerson in the first inning. The trainer came out to see him and Kelly left after a lengthy visit, with Heath Hembree replacing him on the mound. Kelly walked two of the four batters he faced.
Apr 13 2016Kelly (1-0) put a dozen men on base -- seven hits and five walks -- in five innings Wednesday, but struck out six, limited the Orioles to two runs and earned the win. With 14 hits and eight walks allowed through his first eight innings, this certainly wasn't the start Kelly wanted to 2016, but the Red Sox have managed to win both of his starts anyway. The 27-year-old righty has been very hittable while showing unimpressive control throughout his career, and it sure doesn't look like Kelly's taken any sort of a step forward this year.
Apr 9 2016Kelly allowed seven runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out four in three-plus innings in Friday night's 8-7 win over Toronto.Kelly was okay through the first three innings, but fell apart in the fourth when his slider became less effective and he was falling behind hitters. He blamed his mechanics out of the stretch, according to the Providence Journal, while manager John Farrell lamented him losing control of the count. Whatever the root cause, it was another display of Kelly's inconsistency, a discouraging sign after his stellar finish to the 2015 season.
Apr 7 2016Kelly's 2016 debut will be pushed to Friday with the news that the Red Sox's game against the Indians on Thursday has been postponed, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports. The weather in Cleveland became bad enough that the Indians decided to postpone the game despite the fact that there are not many potential makeup dates very soon. This development hurts Kelly a fair amount, as he now has to face the Blue Jays, who he posted a 6.17 ERA against last season, instead of an Indians lineup lacking the same pop.
Mar 31 2016Kelly has been named the Red Sox third starter, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports.Kelly had been tentatively penciled in as the fourth starter, but will move ahead of Rick Porcello in the pecking order after a spring in which he posted a 2.63 ERA with 22 strikeouts over 24 innings. As long as manager John Ferrell sticks to this plan, Kelly will make his 2016 debut April 7 against Cleveland.
Mar 24 2016Kelly allowed one run on five hits and a walk while striking out six in seven innings Thursday against the Mets.Kelly was exceptional Thursday, getting deep into the game on just 75 pitches (49 for strikes). He entered camp as the likely fifth starter and his performance -- 1.35 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 20 innings -- makes him a sure bet to part of the rotation to start the season. He'll probably move up to the fourth spot with Eduardo Rodriguez (knee) sidelined early.
Mar 20 2016Kelly allowed one run on five hits and one walk while striking out five Saturday against the Cardinals, the Boston Globe reports.Kelly threw all four of his pitches for strikes, was able to get back into counts with his off speed stuff, and gained rhythm has the game went along. He's been the best starter in Boston's camp, having permitted two runs on 13 hits and five walks while striking out 12 in 13 innings. The right-hander solidified his spot in the rotation.
Mar 15 2016Kelly quickened his tempo between pitches Monday, relative to his previous start, and delivered four shutout innings, the Boston Globe reports. The better tempo led to more strikes. "It gets my body going towards the plate better," Kelly said. "Get myself in a more athletic windup. Ultimately it allows me to command the strike zone a lot better. I could put the fastball where I wanted to."Kelly allowed three hits and a walk while striking out three on the day, but more encouraging than the tempo was his ability to work out of men-on-base situations. The Pirates had men in scoring position in three of Kelly's four innings, but he was able to make pitches when needed.
Mar 10 2016Kelly admitted his mechanics were off while making his second spring start Wednesday, the Boston Herald reports. He allowed one run on three hits (all singles) and two walks while striking out three in 2.1 innings. The starters should be able to get through three innings in their second start, so from that standpoint, it wasn't a good outing. Kelly said he was going too slow in the windup and then too quickly from the stretch, something that pitching coach Carl Willis pointed out to him. He's still in line to be Boston's fifth starter.
Mar 5 2016Kelly pitched two scoreless innings Friday, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out one against the Rays.Like all pitchers at this time of the year, Kelly worked on his fastball command primarily and sprinkled in a small sampling of offspeed stuff. The right-hander is the leader for the final spot in Boston's rotation, but he won't be given a long leash if he's not performing well. When he's been bad, Kelly has fallen into the habit of throwing his fastball too much. It's key for him to mix in the offspeed stuff, as he did during an impressive eight-game run at the end of last season when he went to his slider and changeup more often.
Feb 28 2016Kelly "certainly has the lead on that fifth spot" in Boston's starting rotation, acknowledged manager John Farrell, the Providence Journal reports.Someone with Kelly's track record should not be assured of a job, but his finish to the 2015 season left a positive impression on Farrell and other organizational decision-makers. After a demotion to Triple-A Pawtucket last year, Kelly began implementing his slider and changeup more often and had an encouraging 3.77 ERA over his final 11 starts. That late-season performance gives him the lead on a cast of characters that includes Steven Wright, Henry Owens, Roenis Elias and Brian Johnson. Injury or performance could lead to Farrell to alter course, but as we sit here at the end of February, Kelly is the likely fifth starter.
Feb 24 2016Kelly was the final player to arrive to Boston's spring training facility in Fort Myers (Fla.) on Wednesday, the Boston Herald reports.Kelly had stayed in California to be with his wife for the birth of the couple's first child, so he begins training camp a bit behind the other starters. He's in line to be Boston's fifth starter, though there's been some recent talk of Henry Owens being given an opportunity to compete for the job as well. If Kelly does start the season in the rotation, manager John Farrell will not be giving him a long leash. Should Kelly underwhelm early on, as he's done in the past with the Red Sox, Farrell has Owens, Steven Wright and Roenis Elias close by to take over.
Feb 7 2016Kelly was assured by manager John Farrell that he will be in Boston's starting rotation when the 2016 season begins, the Boston Herald reports.Kelly's finish to the 2015 season -- 8-0 with a 3.00 ERA in his last nine starts -- makes him an attractive sleeper entering 2016, but manager John Farrell is no position to be patient. If Kelly gets off to a slow start, Farrell, a manager that's guided Boston to two consecutive last-place finishes, could be forced to relegate Kelly to the bullpen or Triple-A and use one of the team's depth starters.
Jan 15 2016Kelly agreed to a one-year, $2.6 million deal with the Red Sox on Friday, avoiding arbitration, the Boston Herald's Jason Mastrodonato reports. He will be in competition for a rotation spot in spring training, and of the back-end options in Boston, Kelly has as much upside as anyone. The righty notched a 3.77 ERA with 50 strikeouts in 59.2 innings in the second half last season, and he could be a sleeper candidate thanks to a fastball that can touch 99 mph. Make sure to follow his performance in spring training leading up to drafts, as he could make for a nice endgame play in deeper leagues if it appears he is one of the frontrunners for the final rotation spot.
Sep 18 2015Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski prefers Kelly (shoulder) as a starter, the Boston Globe reports. The right-handed Kelly, who has been shut down for the season with soreness in his shoulder, had been considered as a candidate for the bullpen.Dombrowski feels there's more value in a pitcher who can start and eat up innings and feels that's how Kelly is best deployed.
Sep 17 2015Kelly is just dealing with right shoulder soreness and the issue isn't serious, 93.7 WEEI FM reports.Kelly was shut down for the season due to the shoulder issue, but fortunately there's nothing more serious underlying. The 27-year-old will finish the season posting a 4.82 ERA and 1.44 WHIP with 110 strikeouts over 134.1 innings. He will enter the offseason in his first year of arbitration, but the injury shouldn't have much impact on the negotiations nor his availability for the 2016 season.
Sep 16 2015Kelly (shoulder) has been officially shut down for the season, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports.Interim manager Torey Lovullo indicated this was likely after Kelly's outing Tuesday was cut short by shoulder tightness/fatigue, but the team officially ended the right-hander's 2015 season Wednesday. Kelly has been sent back to Boston for an MRI on the shoulder. Rich Hill, who shined in his first start, figures to stick in the Boston rotation.
Sep 15 2015Kelly (shoulder) will likely be shut down for the season, the Boston Globe's Pete Abraham reports. He left Tuesday's start with right shoulder tightness/fatigue, so it makes sense that the Red Sox won't push their luck with him over the final two-three weeks of the season. Kelly really shined down the stretch prior to the injury, so he could be a trendy option heading into 2016 if he can prove he is healthy in spring training.
Sep 15 2015Kelly left Tuesday's start with right shoulder tightness/fatigue, the Providence Journal's Tim Britton reports. He started off the game in excellent form over the first two innings, but things unraveled in the third inning, as he gave up four runs (three earned) while recording just one out before exiting. With only a little more than two weeks remaining in the regular season it's quite possible that Kelly won't pitch again in 2015.
Sep 11 2015Kelly, who began the season throwing his fastball 70 percent of the time, has dialed that back to 56 percent during his eight-game winning streak, the Boston Globe reports. "Learning how important secondary pitches were, it's a process. It's a process for somebody that has that type of fastball strength to realize you've got to work on some secondary stuff and it's just clicked," said interim manager Torey Lovullo. We've mentioned this before, but the Red Sox had been trying to get Kelly to mix in his secondary stuff all season and it finally sunk in back in early August when Kelly started his winning streak. His ERA during the run is 2.59 and he's thrust himself into the rotation plans for 2016.
Sep 9 2015Kelly (10-6) allowed one run on six hits and two walks in 5.2 innings while striking out five Blue Jays on Wednesday for his eighth straight win.Even though he entered on a seven-game winning streak, it was hard to expect much from Kelly in a start against the powerful Toronto lineup, but he's been outperforming expectations for a while now. His ERA was inflated to 6.11 at the start of August, but he's now lowered it to 4.70. The Jays will get a chance at home revenge against him next week, but first he'll see the Orioles on Tuesday.
Sep 4 2015Kelly logged another quality start, allowing two runs on five hits, walking three and striking out five over six innings of a 7-5 win against the Phillies on Friday night.Kelly (9-6, 4.84 ERA) has really turned things around of late. He's now won seven straight starts and has seen his ERA drop from 6.11 to it's current level since the first of August. Better pitch selection has been the key, and his recent success has certainly put him firmly in the Red Sox' plans for next year.
Aug 29 2015Kelly allowed one run on five hits and two walks while striking out five in 7.1 innings in Saturday's win over the Mets. He's won six straight starts and allowed just six earned runs in his last five outings (1.59 ERA, 32 innings).Kelly has started throwing his secondary offerings more often and getting away from a steady diet of fastballs that characterized his starts earlier this year. His ERA is down below five (4.94), its lowest mark since late April. Kelly, who pitched his way out of the big leagues and was considered for a bullpen role earlier this season, has worked his way back into Boston's starting-rotation plans for 2016.
Aug 24 2015Kelly improved to 7-6 with a quality start win Monday over the White Sox, as he allowed two runs on five hits and a walk over 7.1 innings. He struck out four.Kelly had White Sox hitters off balance all night, as he induced a whopping 14 ground balls. Kelly now has three straight quality starts and has lowered his ERA from 5.96 to 5.18 in that stretch, with 20 strikeouts against just eight walks. Kelly has been sharper since his late July return and has now won five straight starts.
Aug 19 2015Kelly (6-6) held the Indians to an unearned run over six innings in Wednesday's winning effort. He struck out three, walked three and allowed five hits. That's four wins in a row now for Kelly, and yet nearly every one comes with a caveat -- this time, it's that ugly 3:3 K:BB. Kelly's gone on streaks this year during which he hasn't been able to miss bats, and fantasy owners should be wary of this potentially being the start of another. In fact, his horrible season has probably scared nearly all owners off already.
Aug 14 2015Kelly was impressive again Friday night, allowing one run on four hits, walking two and striking out six over six innings of a 15-1 win against Seattle.Kelly (5-6, 5.69 ERA) has put together a pair of solid starts since adjusting his pitch mix prior to his outing against the Tigers last time out. Now mixing in more off speed pitches and breaking stuff, he has kept hitters off balance more and may have turned the corner on what, up until recently, has been a dismal season.
Aug 8 2015Kelly mixed his pitches better Friday than he has in recent starts, the Providence Journal reports. He was impressive early, striking out seven of the first 10 batters faced.Kelly was mixing in his slider and changeup -- a pitch mix the Red Sox have been imploring him to do all season -- with four strikeouts coming on his slider and three on his changeup. The Tigers eventually started getting to him for some well-struck balls and loud outs, prompting manager John Farrell to pull him after 96 pitches. All in all, it was a hint at the promise the Red Sox thought they were getting when they traded for Kelly last year.
Aug 7 2015Kelly allowed two runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out seven over 5.1 innings of a 7-2 win against the Tigers on Friday night.Kelly (4-6, 5.96 ERA) hasn't had many positive performances this season, but he kept the Sox in this one and his mates provided enough run support to hand him a win. Kelly has a tenuous hold on a rotation spot, but with Brian Johnson injured, this outing probably bought him at least another turn or two going forward.
Aug 6 2015Kelly will start Friday, the Providence Journal reports.Kelly's spot in the rotation appeared to be in jeopardy following his most recent outing, but an injury to prospect Brian Johnson (elbow) has stayed Kelly's transfer to the bullpen.
Aug 1 2015Kelly struggled again Saturday but managed to come away with his third win of the season, allowing five runs on nine hits and a walk over five innings while striking out six. This outing won't do much to help him retain his spot in the rotation, but at least Kelly managed to pick up a victory if it is his last start. If he does stick around though, his next turn would come Friday in Detroit.
Jul 29 2015Kelly may not remain in Boston's rotation, the Boston Globe reports. No decision has been reached regarding Kelly, whose turn comes up Saturday. The right-hander is 2-6 with a 5.94 ERA after allowing five runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings Monday night against the White Sox. Brian Johnson and Henry Owens, both at Triple-A Pawtucket, are candidates to replace Kelly.
Jul 27 2015Kelly allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits in just 3.1 innings in a no decision Monday against the White Sox. He struck out two.Kelly failed to go five innings for the fourth time in 16 starts this season, and he has gone seven innings just twice. Kelly's strikeout rate, walk rate, and home run rate have all been below average as his 95.8 MPH average fastball has failed to translate into results.
Jul 23 2015Kelly allowed four runs on six hits and a walk while striking out six in 5.1 innings in Wednesday night's loss to the Astros. With Boston needing a starter, Kelly was summoned from Triple-A Pawtucket and he'll remain in the starting rotation, the Providence Journal reports.Kelly's start Wednesday was much like his previous starts -- some flashes of excellence mixed in with some mistakes. Three of the six hits Kelly allowed went for home runs. He also hit a batter and threw a wild pitch. Despite the long balls, manager John Farrell was pleased that Kelly was down in the strike zone more consistently. With Clay Buchholz (elbow) looking like he'll be sidelined for a stretch, Kelly's back in the rotation.
Jul 22 2015Kelly was officially recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket on Wednesday.Brian Johnson was sent down to make room for Kelly, who will look to begin his second stint in the Boston rotation on the right foot Wednesday against Collin McHugh and the Astros. Kelly struggled mightily in 14 starts with the Red Sox to begin the year, posting a 5.67 ERA and 1.50 WHIP over 74.2 innings, but he did show some encouraging signs in four starts for Pawtucket. In those four starts, spanning 19 innings, Kelly allowed just six runs on 14 hits with an 18:6 K:BB.
Jul 21 2015Kelly will be recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket on Wednesday and start against the Astros, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports.Kelly's impending return to the rotation will push everyone's starts back for Boston, beginning with Wade Miley taking the hill Thursday. He picked up his first win since being sent down to Triple-A in his most recent start, allowing two runs over five innings. The Red Sox have yet to name a corresponding move for when Kelly is recalled.
Jul 18 2015Kelly (hand) allowed two runs in five innings for Triple-A Pawtucket on Friday. He left his previous start after taking a batted ball of his hand.Kelly, who picked up his first win since being sent down to the minors, may not be used as a starter much longer. Judging from the comments of Boston manager John Farrell, the Red Sox are considering using him out of the bullpen in Boston. Farrell told the Providence Journal that he's open to the idea of Kelly being used as a reliever.
Jul 11 2015Kelly (hand/forearm) expects to be fine after the All-Star break, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports.Kelly was hit by a line drive during Wednesday's game for Triple-A Pawtucket, leading to some minor issues with his off-speed grips. He'll likely start the season's second half at Pawtucket, but he should eventually be an option for the big-league bullpen, or possibly even the starting rotation.
Jul 9 2015Kelly (forearm) could pitch out of the bullpen when he returns to Boston, the Boston Globe reports. "I think at some point there's an option to come back in that role," manager John Farrell said. "But we haven't said that there's an X number of starts before we would alter his path. But he's got bullpen experience at the major-league level."Discussions were underway prior to Kelly getting hit in the arm by a line drive in Wednesday night's game. Kelly, who is down a Triple-A Pawtucket working on his fastball location, has allowed five runs and nine hits in 13 innings.
Jul 8 2015Kelly left Wednesday's game with Triple-A Pawtucket after being struck by a line drive, Jake Seiner of MiLB.com reports. The Red Sox have not yet provided a diagnosis for Kelly's injury, but the comebacker reportedly struck him on the forearm. Kelly allowed four earned runs with an 11:5 K:BB in his first two starts for Pawtucket following his demotion late last month, but only lasted one inning Wednesday.
Jun 29 2015Kelly allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out four in seven innings for Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday, the Providence Journal reports.Kelly was able to locate his fastball with more consistency and integrate his secondary pitches more strategically -- two items on his to-do list while he's pitching in Pawtucket. But there are caveats to his outing: the opponent, the Gwinnett Braves, don't have many elite prospects, and they are in the bottom half of many offensive categories in the International League. He also didn't have command of his curve ball. An encouraging outing, for sure, but there's still work ahead for Kelly. He needs to command and mix over a longer stretch of time.
Jun 25 2015Kelly was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday, Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald reports.Manager John Farrell had been non-committal about Kelly's next turn in the rotation after another disappointing start Tuesday. His ERA is sitting at an unsightly 5.67 and he's allowed 81 hits in 74.2 innings of work. Justin Masterson will take Kelly's spot in the rotation while Kelly works on his craft at Triple-A Pawtucket.
Jun 24 2015Manager John Farrell has not committed to Kelly making his next start, telling the Boston Globe, "we haven't had a chance to review all that, but I think everyone, we're certainly well aware some of the up-and-down path it's been for Joe up to this point."Kelly was rocked for five runs on eight hits and two walks in 3.2 innings Tuesday night. It was the sixth time in 14 starts he's allowed at least five runs. The Red Sox have Justin Masterson on the roster as a potential replacement, or could reach down to Triple-A Pawtucket for Steven Wright or Brian Johnson.
Jun 23 2015Kelly was hit hard Tuesday, allowing five runs over 3.2 innings against the Orioles. The start was Kelly's shortest since his 1.2 inning outing against Minnesota last month. The righty has had a rough go of things this season, posting an unsightly 5.67 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. He'll try to get back on track this weekend in his start against the Rays.
Jun 17 2015Kelly allowed two runs on five hits and three walks over five innings Wednesday in Atlanta. He struck out three in the no-decision.The 26-year-old has had a lot of trouble pitching deep into games, as he's finished six innings in less than half of his 13 starts. With mediocre-at-best outings like this the norm for Kelly, it seems only a matter of time until the Red Sox find a more attractive alternative for their rotation. In the meantime, he's slotted to start Tuesday against Baltimore.
Jun 12 2015Kelly allowed four runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out three over six innings, but came away with a no-decision as Toronto came-from-behind to defeat Boston 13-10 Friday night. It was a rather pedestrian performance by Kelly who actually left with an 8-4 lead before the bullpen experienced a meltdown in a nine-run seventh inning. Kelly was just named one of the rotation starters after the Red Sox opted to go away from a six-man rotation, but his 5.45 ERA isn't generating a lot of confidence in his future output.
Jun 7 2015Kelly will remain in Boston's starting rotation, according to Tom Caron of NESN.Boston's six-man rotation was a temporary thing and will be shrinking it back down to five. The decision as to who remained came down to Kelly and Steven Wright, who will move to the bullpen.
Jun 6 2015Kelly picked up his second win of the season Saturday, allowing just one run on four hits and two walks over six innings, striking out six. It's just his fourth quality start in 11 outings this season. After a rough stretch in late April-early May, Kelly has rebounded and given up two runs or less in four of his last five starts, lowering his ERA to a still-unsightly 5.40. He'll next take on the Jays at home on Friday.
May 31 2015Kelly rebounded nicely on Sunday as he threw five innings of one-run ball with three strikeouts and two walks against the Rangers. He did not factor in the decision. The hard-throwing righty has been battered at times this season, but has now delivered three strong outings in his last four starts and has lowered his ERA to 5.83 on the year. Kelly's next start is currently scheduled for Saturday against the A's.
May 31 2015Kelly rebounded nicely on Sunday as he threw five innings of one-run ball with three strikeouts and two walks against the Texas Rangers. He did not factor in the decision. The hard-throwing righty has been battered at times this season, but has now delivered three strong outings in his last four starts and has lowered his bloated ERA to 5.83 on the year. Kelly will likely remain in the starting rotation for the time being, and is scheduled to face the Oakland Athletics on Saturday.
May 27 2015Kelly met with manager John Farrell and pitching coach Carl Willis on Tuesday for about 40 minutes, one day after the pitcher allowed seven runs in 1.2 innings in a loss to the Twins, the Boston Globe reports. The outing left Kelly's season indicators at 1-4 with a 6.24 ERA."The one thing that we continually try to point out to Joe is he's learning himself as a pitcher and what makes him most effective. [Monday] there were a number of balls that leaked back to the middle of the plate that he paid for," said Farrell, who believes Kelly needs to throw his curve ball more often. One gets the sense that Kelly's on a short leash. He's scheduled to start Saturday and if things don't turn around quickly, the Red Sox have options on staff right now in Matt Barnes or at Triple-A in Brian Johnson (5-3, 2.92 ERA) or Eduardo Rodriguez (4-3, 2.98 ERA).
May 26 2015Manager John Farrell said there's been "no decision here in this moment" when asked if Kelly will remain in the starting rotation following Monday's loss to the Twins, the Boston Globe reports. Kelly allowed seven runs in 1.2 innings, inflating his season ERA to 6.24, eighth highest in baseball.Monday was the shortest start of Kelly's career and it was the fifth time in nine starts this season he's allowed five or more earned runs. As for now, Kelly's the scheduled starter this coming Saturday against the Rangers, against whom Kelly allowed two runs in seven innings last week. If the Red Sox were to make a switch, Matt Barnes, who pitched 3.1 scoreless innings in relief of Kelly, would be a candidate.
May 25 2015Kelly surrendered seven earned runs on eight hits in Monday's loss to Minnesota.Kelly was awful on Monday, recording just five outs before getting chased out of the game. He's now 1-4 on the season with a 6.24 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. Kelly has struggled all season, but he'll look to get back on track against Texas in his next start.
May 20 2015Kelly (1-3) tossed seven strong innings Wednesday against Texas, striking out seven and allowing just two runs on seven hits and a walk, but ended up with the loss. It's a tough loss for Kelly, but still a promising effort after he posted a brutal 5:10 K:BB over his prior two starts. Still, Kelly's solid ERAs in his first two seasons belied poor pitching overall, and there's little reason to think he's got all that much upside from here. He'll draw the Twins on Monday.
May 15 2015Kelly allowed five hits and one run in 6.1 innings, walking only three. He also had two strikeouts in a no-decision Thursday against the Mariners.Kelly didn't factor in the decision, but had a strong rebound performance after walking seven in his last start against Toronto. The only run Kelly allowed was Nelson Cruz scoring on Logan Morrison's slow grounder. Kelly's next scheduled start will be against Texas on Wednesday.
May 9 2015Kelly's control abandoned him on Saturday, as he allowed six runs on four hits and seven walks in 5.2 innings, striking out three. After a couple of promising starts to begin the season, Kelly has now given up five or more earned runs in four straight starts, sending his ERA soaring to 6.35. His next start is scheduled for Thursday in pitcher-friendly Safeco, but even if the Red Sox don't pull Kelly from the rotation, he'll be a very risky play.
May 3 2015Kelly suffered his first loss of the season on Sunday against the Yankees, giving up five runs on nine hits through just 4.2 innings. The 26-year-old gave up all five runs in the first three innings before settling down, but failed to make it through 5.0 innings due to an elevated pitch count. After a promising start to the year, Kelly has given up five runs in each of his last three starts and will face a tough Toronto lineup in his next scheduled appearance on Saturday.
Apr 27 2015Kelly struggled in a no-decision Monday, allowing five runs in six innings against the Blue Jays. The silver lining on Kelly's start are his 10 strikeouts, giving him 28 for the year in 23.2 innings. After a strong first start of the season, Kelly hasn't had a quality start since. His next outing will come against the Yankees this weekend.
Apr 22 2015Kelly racked up seven strikeouts over five innings Wednesday in Tampa, but gave up five runs on eight hits and a walk. He received no decision in the eventual loss.Kelly's bat-missing skills have been a bit of a revelation so far -- he has 18 strikeouts in 17.2 innings -- but he hasn't been pitching terribly efficiently anyway. However, his velocity coupled with the fact that the Red Sox should be pretty good makes Kelly an intriguing fantasy own in deeper formats.
Apr 18 2015Kelly allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three in 5.2 innings in Boston's win over Baltimore on Friday. He tossed 118 pitches, two shy of his career high. The Orioles battled Kelly on Friday, fouling off several good pitches and not chasing bad ones, making it a very laborious start. Kelly, who was hampered by a biceps injury late in training camp and had to talk manager John Farrell into letting him make his first start last week against the Yankees, has been good through two starts. He's averaged 105 pitches while leading the staff in WHIP and ERA.
Apr 11 2015Kelly allowed one run on one hit and two walks while striking out eight in seven innings in Saturday's win over the Yankees. After a shaky second inning when he lost the zone for about 10 pitches, Kelly retired the final 17 batters he faced. It was a large effort for Kelly, who not only was pitching for the first time since his spring biceps injury, but it came less than 12 hours after all of the team's relievers were needed in a 19-inning game Friday.
Apr 9 2015Kelly (biceps) will start Saturday's game against the Yankees, CSN New England's Sean McAdam reports.Kelly will get the start on the first day he's eligible to return from the disabled list, knocking Steven Wright out of the rotation. The previous plan was for Kelly to start at Low-A Greenville, and the Red Sox had been hoping he'd get his pitch count up to 95. It would thus be unwise to expect more than 95 pitches from Kelly in his 2015 debut.
Apr 8 2015Kelly will get a final tuneup Saturday at Low-A Greenville before rejoining the Red Sox's rotation, the Boston Herald's Scott Lauber reports.Steven Wright will get the spot start for Boston on Saturday against the Yankees. Manager John Farrell said that he wants Kelly to get his pitch count up to around 95 pitches, so look for that following his start for Greenville on Saturday to make sure he remains in line to jump back into Boston's rotation next week.
Apr 7 2015Boston manager John Farrell indicated that he would like to see Kelly (biceps) up around the 95-pitch mark before he makes his regular season debut, the Boston Globe reports.Kelly (five innings, 78 pitches) and Steven Wright (six innings, 95 pitches) both pitched in an intrasquad game in Florida on Monday, but based on Farrell's comments, it looks like Wright may get the call this weekend when the Red Sox needs a fifth starter. Both pitchers were scheduled to join the Red Sox in Philadelphia for the continuation of their series with the Phillies.
Apr 6 2015Kelly (biceps) threw 78 pitches in an extended spring training appearance Monday, and could require another outing before rejoining the rotation, Tim Britton of the Providence Journal reports.Kelly's return date is a bit unclear at this point, but April 11 doesn't seem out of the question. However, another rehab outing would likely push that date back, but that decision hasn't been made yet. More news on the situation should come at some point this week.
Apr 3 2015Kelly (biceps) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports.Kelly is seemingly close to turning the page on the biceps injury, working up to 65 pitches in a minor league game Wednesday, and he appears a likely candidate to start the fifth game of the season for Boston (Apr. 11 at Yankee Stadium). However, by giving Kelly a backdated DL stint, the team can keep an extra bullpen arm or bench player for the first few days of the season. Kelly is scheduled to build his pitch count up to 80 in another minor league outing Monday.
Apr 3 2015Kelly (biceps) will throw in a minor league game in Florida on Monday, the Boston Herald reports. He's scheduled to throw up to 80 pitches. If Kelly comes through the game feeling healthy, he might be able to make a regular season start when Boston's needs a fifth starter Apr. 11 or 12 against the Yankees.
Apr 2 2015Kelly (biceps) threw four innings and 65 pitches in a minor league game Wednesday, the Boston Globe reports. The biceps injury has set back his schedule and Kelly is most likely to start the season the disabled list.
Mar 30 2015Kelly (biceps) will make his next spring start against minor-league competition, the Boston Herald reports. The decision to have Kelly throw to minor leaguers likely means Boston will place him on the disabled list to the start the season. It preserves the team's option to backdate the DL-assignment.
Mar 29 2015Kelly (biceps) said he felt fine following a three-inning stint in an intrasquad game Friday, the Boston Globe reports. The Red Sox have not yet decided if Kelly's next turn Wednesday will be against major-league or minor-league competition. Given that he's behind schedule, we suspect Kelly will throw against minor leaguers to preserve the club's option of backdating a potential DL-assignment.
Mar 28 2015Kelly (biceps) threw three innings in a minor-league intrasquad game Friday, the Boston Globe reports. He allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out five. Thirty-one of his 53 pitches were strikes.Kelly said the arm felt better throwing Friday than it has all spring and was hopeful. "Stuff-wise and health-wise, I felt really good," said the right-hander. There's a very good chance Kelly starts the season on the 15-day disabled list -- he's behind the other starters and hasn't built up his innings yet.
Mar 23 2015Kelly (biceps) will throw a minor-league game Friday instead of Boston's exhibition game against the Braves, ESPN Boston reports. Having Kelly pitch against minor league competition gives Boston the option to retroactively place the pitcher on the 15-day disabled list.Red Sox manager John Farrell is talking about carrying four starters / eight relievers early in April as Boston can get by without a fifth starter until April 15th. As Kelly now projects as the fifth starter, he could be placed on the 15-day disabled list to open the season and still be ready to go for the 15th.
Mar 22 2015Kelly (biceps) threw a 75-pitch extended bullpen session Sunday, the Providence Journal reports.Kelly essentially went through a simulated three innings of work. He said he feels the biceps injury is behind him. Kelly is line to pitch Friday.
Mar 17 2015Kelly (biceps) had a light-throwing session Tuesday, ESPN Boston reports. He was removed from Monday's game with tightness in his biceps.Manager John Farrell is not ruling out Kelly making his next scheduled start and will get him on a mound in a couple of days to assess where he's at.
Mar 17 2015Kelly first felt a problem in his biceps during warm-ups Monday but decided to pitch through it, the Boston Herald reports.Kelly could not put any spin on the baseball and threw mostly fastballs and changeups, but even that hurt. He seems to think he'll get over this quickly, but in case he's delayed and can't start the regular season, keep Steven Wright's name handy come draft / auction day.
Mar 16 2015Kelly left Monday's game in the third inning with an apparent injury, the Boston Globe's Peter Abraham reports.Kelly threw a pitch with the bases loaded in the third inning and catcher Ryan Hanigan immediately motioned toward the dugout, signifying a potential serious injury. Kelly went from the mound directly into the clubhouse with the athletic trainer. He was projected to be the No. 5 starter in Boston's rotation, and Steven Wright is the internal favorite to replace him. Should the injury end up being serous, the Cole Hamels trade rumors will pick up again, as starting rotation depth was already an issue for the Red Sox.
Mar 16 2015Kelly is dealing with biceps tightness and is being considered day-to-day, Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reports.Kelly had to be removed from Monday's Grapefruit League game, but the diagnosis appears to be much better than initially projected. While there was some concern that it could have been a serious injury, Kelly reported that he's dealt with a similar issue before and it "usually doesn't last too long," so he should be back to game action after missing only limited time.
Mar 11 2015Kelly allowed two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out four Wednesday against the Yankees. The results aren't pretty, but Kelly and manager John Farrell were pleased with the command and control when compared to his first outing when he gave up four runs and seven hits in 1.2 innings. Of his 41 pitches, 28 went for strikes.
Mar 6 2015Kelly was hit hard in his spring debut, allowing seven hits and four runs in 1.2 innings Thursday night against the Twins. He threw 44 pitches, 29 for strikes.Other than the percentage of pitches for strikes and getting ahead of hitters, it was all bad for Kelly, whose four-seamer was catching too much of the plate. He tried to accentuate the positive, telling reporters that he's never had good springs, a claim borne out by the numbers. He had a 6.29 ERA in four spring starts for the Cardinals last season and a 4.91 ERA in six appearances in 2013.
Mar 2 2015Kelly is adding a four-seam fastball to his repertoire, WEEI.com reports. "That'€™s what I was working on [Saturday]. It was coming out good," Kelly explained. "I never threw it. This is the first time trying it. I thought I would give it a try. It's harder. It gets on hitters quick."Kelly drew raves from hitters following a live batting-practice session Saturday. The right-hander has had some success in the majors, but has yet to do it consistently.
Feb 28 2015Kelly needs to refine his command overall and become more efficient, according to Red Sox manager John Farrell, who wants to see the right-hander go deeper into games, the Providence Journal reports.Kelly walked nearly four batters per nine innings last season for St. Louis and Boston, with that number increasing to 4.7 per nine while with the Red Sox. In order to get more innings, limiting walks is important, but so is managing counts -- throwing first-pitch strikes and getting ahead in counts. We'll get to see soon if Kelly is making any progress with pitch efficiency. He's slated to pitch this coming Thursday against the Twins.
Feb 28 2015Kelly will pitch the Grapefruit League opener Thursday against the Twins, WEEI.com reports.Thursday will be Boston's first spring-training game against major-league competition. On Tuesday, when they kick off competitive games with a double-header against Northeastern University and Boston College, Clay Buchholz, Rick Porcello and Wade Miley are scheduled to pitch. Those scheduled assignments suggest Kelly is fourth in the starting rotation.
Sep 21 2014Kelly logged seven strong innings Sunday, allowing three hits and two earned runs in a winning decision over the Orioles.Kelly, who struck out five and walked three, has settled down recently, going at least six innings in five consecutive starts. He's recorded a 4.00 ERA to go with a 38:30 K:BB ratio in eight starts (54 innings) since joining up with the Red Sox.
Sep 15 2014Kelly allowed four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three in six innings in Sunday's win over the Royals. After a second-inning, three-run homer, Kelly settled in nicely. This was just the second time in eight starts with Boston in which Kelly has walked fewer than three batters. In 47 innings for the Red Sox, he's walked 27. Kelly's time in Boston has been a mixed bag, but he appears headed for a spot in the 2015 rotation.
Sep 2 2014Kelly grabbed the win against the Yankees Tuesday, tossing 6.2 shaky innings that featured three earned runs on five hits, four walks, six strikeouts and a home run.The righty didn't make earning his first win of the season (in 13 appearances) easy on himself, managing just 15-of-27 first-pitch strikes. Nonetheless, the win gives him a 1-1 record to go with an ERA of 4.13 and a WHIP of 1.39. Kelly is scheduled to take on the Blue Jays in his next start Sunday.
Sep 1 2014Kelly is starting Tuesday's contest against the Yankees in New York, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports. In five nods with the Red Sox since his arrival at the trade deadline, Kelly boasts a 3.86 ERA, 1.321 WHIP, and 18:18 K:BB in 28 innings. Although discomfort in his right shoulder threatened to wipe away his last start Wednesday, he managed to keep the Blue Jays in check, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four in six frames.
Aug 27 2014Kelly gave up two runs on three hits over six innings in a no-decision against the Blue Jays on Wednesday. He pitched well enough to keep the Red Sox in the game, but the Jays managed to plate three runs against the Boston relief corps after Kelly's exit. Barring a change in the schedule, Kelly is positioned for two starts next week, including a Tuesday road trip to Yankee Stadium and a home start against the Blue Jays on September 7.
Aug 27 2014Kelly (shoulder) has been confirmed as Wednesday's starter against the Blue Jays.Shoulder discomfort cut Kelly's last outing short after five innings, but the Red Sox were adamant that his removal was strictly precautionary and the right-hander will indeed be fine to toe the rubber Wednesday opposite Marcus Stroman. Kelly received the green light after successfully completing a bullpen session Sunday.
Aug 26 2014Kelly (shoulder) threw a bullpen session without incident Sunday, the Boston Globe reports.Kelly, who left his last start with shoulder discomfort, is expected to take his next turn Wednesday.
Aug 23 2014Kelly (shoulder) is expected to make his next scheduled start against the Blue Jays on Wednesday, the Associated Press reports.Manager John Farrell confirmed Kelly's status after Saturday's game, as the indication continues to be that he was removed from Friday's start as a precaution due to slight discomfort in his right shoulder.
Aug 22 2014Kelly was pulled from Friday's game "as a precaution," ESPN Boston's Gordon Edes reports. The Red Sox would not say what was ailing Kelly, and the team will address the matter further after the game. He had tossed five one-hit shutout innings while walking three and striking out five before getting pulled with his pitch count still at just 88 (54 strikes).
Aug 17 2014Kelly was beat up for seven hits and seven earned runs while walking six and striking out three in four innings against Houston on Sunday.Kelly had been enjoying a nice start to his Red Sox career, having allowed three earned runs through his first two starts, but the wheels fell off against the Astros. Most of the damage was done in the top of the second inning, with Kelly allowing four hits and six runs in the frame, capped off by Jose Altuve's grand slam. The right-hander will hope for a much better outing at home against Seattle on Friday.
Aug 12 2014Kelly tossed six innings of five-hit, two-run ball in a no-decision Tuesday against the Reds. He also walked three and struck out four.Kelly has yet to receive a decision in his two starts with the Red Sox after coming over in a July 31 trade with the Cardinals, but he's only allowed a combined three earned runs and eight hits in 13 innings so he's off to a decent start in Bean Town. The third-year big leaguer now owns a 3.75 ERA to go along with a 17:31 BB:K in 48 innings this season and is slated to start again Sunday versus the Astros.
Aug 7 2014Kelly had a sparkling Red Sox debut Wednesday against his former team. He gave up a run on three hits while walking four and striking out two over seven innings.Kelly wasn't involved in the decision, but he did receive a warm welcome from the St. Louis crowd. The right-hander is 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 27:14 K:BB ratio overall in 2014. Kelly takes the mound Tuesday in Cincinnati.
Aug 6 2014Kelly left Wednesday's game against the Cardinals after appearing to have suffered a lower leg injury, Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com reports.Kelly's exact injury status at the moment remains uncertain, as reports have suggested anything from a knee to a calf injury. This clearly isn't what the Red Sox want to see after acquiring the right-hander as part of the John Lackey deal with the intentions of him filling many of the innings Lackey leaves behind. Consider Kelly day-to-day until more information is disclosed, leaving him questionable for his next scheduled start. He allowed one run on three hits and two walks prior to exiting.
Aug 6 2014Updating a previous report, Kelly will remain in Wednesday night's game despite suffering an apparent leg injury, MLB.com's Ian Browne reports.Kelly's exit appeared all but certain after he seemed to injury his leg running down the first base line. However, he was able to complete his warmup tosses, and ultimately convinced team trainers that he was good to go. His status is worth monitoring for the remainder of the contest.
Aug 2 2014Kelly will make his Red Sox debut Wednesday against the Cardinals, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports.Kelly will face his former team in his very first outing for Boston, Wednesday opposite right-hander Shelby Miller. Since his return from a hamstring injury which cost him close to three months, Kelly has given up 16 earned runs on 26 hits in four starts (19.2 innings), so those in AL-only leagues may want to take a wait-and-see approach.
Jul 31 2014The Cardinals agreed to trade Kelly to the Red Sox on Thursday along with Allen Craig in exchange for John Lackey, Peter Gammons of MLB Network reports.A hamstring injury cost Kelly close to two months and he's struggled mightily since his return, with a 7.32 ERA in four July starts. The Cardinals were able to land an upgrade in Lackey, but Kelly will likely stay in a starting role with Boston, and perhaps the change of scenery will help the 26-year-old return to form.
Jul 19 2014Kelly picked up his second win of the season Saturday, as he held the Dodgers to one run on four hits and a walk over seven innings.Kelly, who struck out four batters, threw 62 of his 99 pitches (62.6 percent) for strikes. He's done well to surrender just seven walks in 25.1 innings this season, but as we saw in his last outing, the right-hander is perfectly hittable. Luckily for fantasy owners, Kelly's next outing lines up for Friday in Chicago, against the light-hitting Cubbies. It should be a manageable matchup for the pitch-to-contact righty.
Jul 11 2014Kelly (hamstring) was roughed up for six runs on seven hits over three innings against the Brewers on Friday night. He was able to avoid the loss as the Cards' offense picked up seven runs over the final six innings to rally for a 7-6 victory. It's unclear if Kelly will be on the schedule for a start in the first series after the All-Star break next weekend.
Jul 11 2014Kelly (hamstring) was activated from the 60-day DL on Friday.Just three starts into the season, Kelly was forced on to the DL with hamstring strain, and he ended up missing close to three months as a result of the injury. He's finally been given the green light to return following a three-start rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis, and is scheduled to toe the rubber Friday opposite the Brewers' Yovani Gallardo. Jaime Garcia (shoulder) was moved to the 60-day DL to make room for Kelly on the 40-man.
Jul 7 2014Kelly (hamstring) surrendered one run over 4.1 innings during a rehab start at Triple-A Memphis on Sunday. He struck out three batters and walked one in the outing.Kelly has looked sharp his last two times out for Memphis, covering a total of 8.1 frames. While he would appear healthy and ready to rejoin the St. Louis rotation, the team bypassed activating him from the DL to replace the struggling Marco Gonzales, opting instead to bring up Tyler Lyons from Triple-A. As a result, Kelly could make one more start at Memphis, before likely rejoining the Cardinals immediately following the All-Star break.
Jul 7 2014Kelly (hamstring) is expected to be activated from the 60-day DL to start Friday against the Brewers, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Kelly was expected to be activated a bit later than this, but the recent success he's shown in his rehab outings has prompted the Cardinals to consider an early return. Kelly will now take the rotation spot of Marco Gonzales, who was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Monday following a stretch of shaky outings. Tyler Lyons was originally thought to take that rotation spot after he was recalled from Triple-A on Monday, but he'll now likely head to the bullpen. Kelly hasn't pitched for the Cardinals since April 16, and will likely hold down a spot in the rotation until Michael Wacha (shoulder) is ready, although his timetable has yet to be established.
Jul 3 2014Kelly (hamstring) is not expected to return to the Cardinals' rotation until after the All-Star break, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Pitching on short rest in his second rehab start Tuesday, Kelly allowed three hits and two walks over four scoreless innings for Triple-A Memphis. He threw 49 pitches in the outing, and it sounds like the Cardinals will keep him down for at least one more minor league start -- and quite possibly two more -- before reinserting him into the major league rotation.
Jul 2 2014Kelly pitched four shutout innings Tuesday, allowing three hits and two walks in a rehab start for Triple-A Memphis. The plan was for Kelly to throw more than 60 pitches but he fell short at just 49. He'll have to build up his arm strength before a shot at the MLB rotation, although it's possible the Cardinals are planning to use him in more of a long relief role going forward.
Jun 29 2014Kelly make his second rehab start on short rest for Triple-A Memphis, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Kelly only threw 41 pitches in his first start Friday and will likely throw at least 60 pitches in his next start.
Jun 27 2014Kelly (hamstring) said his mechanics were off in his rehab start Friday night, but he felt good health-wise, according to Jim Hayes of Fox Sports Midwest. In two innings, Kelly threw 41 pitches (21 strikes) while holding Triple-A Round Rock two to runs on two hits and three walks. He'll likely need at least two more rehab starts before he's stretched out enough to rejoin the St. Louis rotation.
Jun 25 2014Kelly (hamstring) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Wednesday, ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports. It sounds like Kelly's move to the 60-day DL is just a procedural transaction, since the right-hander has already missed beyond 60 days after suffering a hamstring strain April 17. He's slated to make his first rehab start at Triple-A Memphis on Friday, and should after a rotation spot with the Cardinals waiting for him thereafter following the placement of Jaime Garcia (shoulder) and Michael Wacha (shoulder) on the disabled list last weekend.
Jun 22 2014Kelly (hamstring) emerged pain-free after throwing two innings of a simulated game Sunday morning, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports.Kelly was originally scheduled for a regular bullpen session, but the fact that he was able to complete two simulated innings is encouraging. He'll likely embark upon a rehab assignment later in the week, but the Cardinals have yet to make any announcement regarding his timetable. Jaime Garcia will likely hang on to his job as the No. 5 starter once Kelly returns, but the Cardinals may find the occasional start for him in an effort to rest some of their younger arms. Otherwise, Kelly will likely serve in long relief once he gets the call back up.
Jun 21 2014Kelly (hamstring) is scheduled for another bullpen session Sunday, the Cardinals' official site reports. If everything goes as planned, Kelly will embark on a minor league rehab assignment after Sunday's session. It's unclear how many starts he'll need before the Cards bring him back into the fold.
Jun 19 2014Kelly (hamstring) threw an "aggressive" bullpen session Thursday, and could soon be sent on a rehab assignment, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Kelly took a big step in his recovery from a hamstring injury, throwing off a mound for one of the first times since early May. His rehab has taken much longer than expected, but with a rehab appearance just around the corner, it shouldn't be more than a few weeks until he returns to the Cardinals, barring any setbacks. Lefty Jaime Garcia has pitched admirably in the rotation since joining the team, so Kelly would likely head to the bullpen upon his return, where he'd be one of the first candidates for a spot start, if needed.
Jun 16 2014GM John Mozeliak said he expects Kelly (hamstring) to return from the disabled list in "two or three weeks," Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Kelly has taken longer to recover from the his hamstring injury that initially expected when he first succumbed to the ailment in April, but it looks like he finally has some clarity on his timetable. The Cardinals have welcomed back Jaime Garcia back from the DL since Kelly has been out, so a long relief role might beacon upon his return from the hamstring injury.
May 28 2014Kelly (hamstring) has yet to resume any rigorous leg exercises in his recovery from the April 16th injury, MLB.com reports.Kelly has been out much longer than expected and will have to make at least one rehab appearance before being able to return. A mid-June return is probably the best case scenario at this point.
May 8 2014Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said Thursday that Kelly (hamstring) hasn't made much progress and may be out until June, CBS Sports Radio 920 reports.Meanwhile, Jaime Garcia (should) could be back as soon as next weekend, which puts Kelly's role with the team into question. Kelly pitched well in his three April starts, but the Cards have good rotation depth, and Garcia is the more proven option. For now, getting healthy is still Kelly's greater concern.
May 5 2014Kelly (hamstring) will not throw off the mound for a while, as he's not progressing as quickly as anticipated, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports.Kelly hasn't seen the mound since his early exit April 16, and this recent setback certainly won't help his case. It sounds like he'll halt all throwing activities in favor of rest, and resume his rehab once his hamstring is free of discomfort. This puts him without a timetable for a return, and will likely extend Tyler Lyons' time in the rotation.
May 2 2014Kelly (hamstring) threw off a mound Friday, but he is still dealing with fatigue in his hamstring, and is unlikely to return before the end of the Cardinals' ongoing road trip, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The Cardinals won't be back home until May 12, as they started a nine-game road trip Friday afternoon. Kelly will try to throw off a mound again in the near future, but it sounds like his hamstring is still rather irksome.
Apr 29 2014Kelly (hamstring) played long toss again Tuesday, but will not come off the DL when eligible on Friday, and will need at least one minor league rehab start before returning at some point in May, MLB.com's Jennifer Langosch reports. The Cardinals are going to skip Tyler Lyons in the rotation and won't need a fifth starter until May 6, but for Kelly to be that guy, he'd need to get going on a rehab assignment very soon.
Apr 26 2014Kelly (hamstring) threw from 150 feet Friday and has been able to do some lower body workouts but is still not throwing from the mound or running full-speed, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Kelly will likely slot back in to the rotation on May 6th in Atlanta, assuming he doesn't suffer any setbacks. The righty has a 0.59 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP in three starts this season.
Apr 17 2014The Cardinals placed Kelly (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports. The Cardinals were hoping that the hamstring injury Kelly suffered Wednesday would cost him only one start, but it turns out it will keep him sidelined for at least the next couple weeks. The Cardinals have not announced a replacement for Kelly in the rotation, but the top options seem to minor leaguer Tyler Lyons and starter-turned-reliever Carlos Martinez.
Apr 16 2014Kelly will travel back to St. Louis to have his hamstring injury evaluated Thursday, and if he is forced to miss his scheduled start Monday, Tyler Lyons is expected to fill in, MLB.com's Jennifer Langosch reports.Kelly was diagnosed with a tight left hamstring, so owners will need to await further news from the team following Thursday's examination. Lyons is not a very exciting arm, at least not by Cardinals standards, but he could pitch his way to a win or two if he is given a couple spot starts if Kelly misses time.
Apr 16 2014Kelly left Wednesday's contest at Milwaukee in the top of the fifth inning after injuring his left hamstring in an attempt to run out a bunt, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.Prior to his removal, Kelly was cruising along, surrendering one run (zero earned) on three hits and no walks, while punching out two in four innings. The severity of the ailment isn't known, but his next slated start Monday at the Mets is now in question.
Apr 16 2014Kelly was diagnosed with a tight left hamstring, which spurred his removal from Wednesday's game in Milwaukee. While attempting to run out a bunt in the top of the fifth inning, Kelly came down with the injury, but not before tossing four steady frames (one unearned run on three hits with a 2:0 K:BB). The grade of the strain has yet to be released, but consider him day-to-day in advance of his upcoming nod Monday at the Mets.
Apr 11 2014Kelly turned in a solid six innings of work Friday night, allowing just one unearned run on six hits with three strikeouts versus the Cubs. For Kelly, make it back-to-back strong efforts to kickoff the campaign. The Cardinals' fifth starter has given up just two runs (one earned) across his first 11.1 innings of 2014, as the team's decision to make him a part of the rotation appears to have been the correct one.
Apr 6 2014Kelly picked up the win in Saturday's 6-1 win over Pittsburgh, allowing just one run on four walks and six hits while striking out four in 5.1 innings.Kelly managed to strand several runners while needing 107 pitches to get through his outing. The Cardinals will take performances like these but his advanced numbers continue to suggest some major regression is on the way.
Mar 23 2014Kelly has been named the Cardinals' No. 5 starter, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch reports.Carlos Martinez outperformed Kelly by a wide margin this spring, but the team has decided to go with the more experienced arm in Kelly to begin the year. The 22-year-old Martinez will work in the eighth inning. Kelly won 10 games and posted a 2.69 ERA last season, but his leash may be somewhat short early, and Jaime Garcia (shoulder) will likely be a threat to take his spot come May.
Mar 16 2014Kelly turned in his first solid performance of the spring, pitching 5.1 innings while giving up just one earned run on four hits and striking out three in the win over Atlanta.Kelly needed to pitch well to stay in the race for the fifth spot in the Cardinals' rotation with Carlos Martinez putting a ton of pressure on the Cardinals to choose him. The Cardinals would likely prefer to hand the job to Kelly to give Martinez a little more time and performances like Saturday's should make that decision a little easier.
Mar 9 2014Kelly was happy with his stuff despite being knocked around for five runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings Saturday.Kelly was the victim of several infield hits and his stat line doesn't reflect his performance properly as he was pretty unlucky. Kelly is vying for the fifth spot in the Cardinals rotation.
Feb 10 2014Kelly will likely have to win a four-man battle for the Cards' final rotation spot this spring, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Adam Wainwright, Michael Wacha, Shelby Miller and Lance Lynn appear to have the first four spots in the rotation secured, which leaves one for the likes of Kelly, Carlos Martinez, Jaime Garcia and Tyler Lyons. If healthy, Garcia might emerge as the favorite, but that has become a very big question mark for the Cards in recent seasons. If he doesn't secure a starting spot, Kelly will likely factor into the St. Louis bullpen.
Oct 24 2013Kelly will start Game 3 of the World Series, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Kelly's performances in the NLCS left something to be desired (4.91 ERA), but the Cardinals will stick by the right-hander for Saturday's tilt. He'll oppose veteran Jake Peavy.
Oct 17 2013Kelly wasn't sharp Wednesday, giving up four runs on seven hits, including two home runs, while striking out three across five innings to take the loss against Los Angeles.Kelly had turned in two quality outings thus far in the playoffs but the Dodgers jumped on him early in a 6-4 win for the Dodgers. It's unlikely he'll earn another start on regular rest as the Cardinals will probably try to turn to the top of the rotation should they advance to the World Series.
Oct 10 2013Kelly will start Game 1 of the NLCS against the Dodgers, MLB.com reports.Kelly wasn't exactly on point in Game 3 of the NLDS, with five hits and four walks allowed over 5.1 innings, but the 25-year-old was extremely effective over the final two months of the season (2.09 ERA), thanks largely to his ability to induce ground balls. He'll oppose right-hander Zack Greinke.
Oct 3 2013Manager Mike Matheny said Kelly will start Game 3 of the NLDS series against the Pirates, the MLB.com's Tom Singer reports. While Kelly didn't enter the season with the fanfare of some of the other top pitching arms in the Cardinals' system, he proved quite serviceable during his 15 starts in the big leagues this season, delivering a 2.28 ERA while holding opposing hitters to a .245 batting average. He's expected to match up against Francisco Liriano on Sunday.
Sep 27 2013Kelly will have his start Saturday pushed back to Sunday against the Cubs, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Kelly took the loss in his last outing Sunday against the Brewers. He will be moved in the rotation schedule so that Adam Wainwright can be on regular rest to start Game 1 of the NLDS.
Sep 22 2013Kelly gave up six runs (three earned) on seven hits over seven innings Sunday against Milwaukee.Kelly dropped to 9-5 on the year, and was in trouble early and often. It didn't help that the Cardinals had three errors, one of them on Kelly himself.
Sep 20 2013Kelly (calf) completed a successful bullpen session Thursday and is expected to make his next start on Sunday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Kelly left Tuesday's game with a slight strain in his right calf after he'd been experiencing tightness for a few days. Barring a setback, he'll take the hill Sunday against the Brewers.
Sep 18 2013Kelly left Tuesday's start after the fifth inning with tightness in his upper right calf, MLB.com reports. It sounds as though Kelly's removal was strictly precautionary, as the right-hander said that he wanted to keep pitching despite the tightness. Manager Mike Matheny though better of letting Kelly stay in, however, and considering Kelly's 1.94 ERA since June 1 is the second best in the majors, it makes perfect sense. Kelly does not appear to be in danger of missing his next start, but he may not be completely in the clear until he gets through his between-starts bullpen session.
Sep 17 2013Kelly picked up his ninth win of the season Tuesday against the Rockies, tossing five scoreless innings while allowing just three hits.By the end of his five crisp innings, St. Louis held a 10-0 lead and was able to coast the rest of the way. Kelly continues to be a crucial component in the Cardinals' rotation, posting a 9-2 record and a 2.14 ERA in 14 starts.
Sep 12 2013Kelly (8-4) allowed four runs (three earned) in just five innings Thursday in a loss to the Brewers, striking out four while allowing seven hits and a walk.Kelly had been on a nice roll, racking up five straight quality starts coming into Thursday's game, but things didn't go so well this time, as he wasn't sharp, needing 94 pitches just to get through five frames.
Sep 7 2013Kelly gave up one run on eight hits and three walks with four strikeouts over six innings against the Pirates on Friday.Kelly has now won his last five decisions with five straight quality starts. He may not be a big strikeout type guy (6.02 K/9), but his 2.74 ERA has been plenty helpful. He's still someone that you have to watch closely and play the match-ups with as his 4.13 FIP indicates that he's pitching over his head despite owning a 50.9 percent ground ball rate. He'll face Milwaukee next whom he's only seen as a reliever this season but it's worth noting that he's allowed four earned runs over three innings against them over three appearances.
Sep 2 2013Kelly went six innings in Sunday's win over Pittsburgh, surrendering just one run on four hits and two walks while striking out five.Since rejoining the rotation in early July Kelly has been excellent for the Cardinals. In those 10 starts the Cardinals have gone 9-1 while Kelly has posted a 7-0 record with a 2.16 ERA in 58.1 innings.
Aug 27 2013Kelly gave up just one earned run despite allowing eight hits and three walks with one strikeout in six innings Tuesday against the Reds, picking up his sixth win of the season in the process. The number one thing working in Kelly's favor right now is the team he pitches for. St. Louis has won six of its last seven games, and is one of the better teams in all of baseball. This is the dominant reason for Kelly's 6-0 record in nine starts since rejoining the rotation, despite an unimpressive 16.3 percent K-rate and a 8.7 percent BB-rate on the season. Moreover, his 4.11 FIP and 1.37 WHIP that accompany his 2.91 ERA suggest that he has been incredibly lucky so far this season. He will have two more shots at wins next week, with starts at Cincinnati and at home against Pittsburgh.
Aug 22 2013Kelly (5-3) allowed two runs on seven hits over six innings in Thursday's win over Atlanta. He struck out three and walked two. That's not a very impressive K:BB ratio, but Kelly continues to be surprisingly effective for the Cardinals despite uninspiring peripherals. With his low strikeout rate, high walk rate and high strand rate, Kelly's a prime regression candidate.
Aug 17 2013Kelly threw six shutout innings in a win over the Cubs on Saturday. He gave up four hits and three walks while striking out six.The win was Kelly's fourth of the season, but third already this month. Kelly has performed well since moving into a starting role, with a 2.23 ERA since July 6, though he has not yet gone beyond 6.1 innings in any outing.
Aug 12 2013Kelly took a no-decision in the Cardinals' 8-4 win over Chicago on Sunday, surrendering three earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three in 5.1 innings of work.Kelly wasn't quite as effective as his previous few starts but he didn't need to be. The young right-hander has pitched well for the Cardinals, surrendering one run or less in five of his seven starts.
Aug 6 2013Kelly wasn't flashy, but he was effective Tuesday, allowing one earned run on six hits and two walks with one strikeout in 5.1 innings to pick up the win over Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers. He is now 3-0 in five starts since rejoining the rotation on July 6, and had a 20-inning scoreless streak snapped when the Dodgers pushed one across in the sixth inning Tuesday. It seems that he has no plans of leaving the starting rotation, and even though he isn't a great source of Ks (17.2 percent on the season), his win probability is higher than most available starting pitchers given the team he pitches for. He'll have an easier matchup on paper in his next start Sunday at home against the Cubs.
Aug 1 2013Kelly threw six scoreless innings Thursday to notch his second win of the season. He allowed three hits and four walks, striking out four.Kelly is making a case to stick around permanently in the rotation, not allowing a run over his last 12.1 innings. For now Kelly will continue to work as a starter, with his next scheduled start coming at home against the Dodgers.
Jul 29 2013Kelly will likely be the starter on Thursday after throwing 6.1 shutout innings on Saturday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Kelly would have to be dominate to secure a spot in the rotation for the remainder of the season, as the Cardinals are rumored to be looking for a starting pitcher via a trade before the deadline. The team also has high-impact arms waiting in Triple-A with both Michael Wacha and Carlos Martinez.
Jul 27 2013Kelly allowed seven hits and three walks, with three strikeouts over 6.1 scoreless innings against the Braves on Saturday, and did not factor into the decision in the Cardinals' 2-0 loss.In his first start since July 12, Kelly quieted the NL East-leading Braves over 6.1 innings, but opposing pitcher Julio Teheran matched Kelly frame for frame and Atlanta ended up taking the lead in the eighth. The Cardinals don't have another day off until Aug. 12, and they have just one other off-day in August, so Kelly seems likely to stick around as No. 5 starter until his performance dictates otherwise.
Jul 24 2013Kelly will likely start Saturday's game against Atlanta, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Manager Mike Matheny has said the team is "leaning "toward" using Kelly as it's fifth starter the next time they need one.
Jul 12 2013Kelly came away with his first victory of the season in Friday's 3-2 win over the Cubs, allowing one run over 5.1 innings. It was a very workmanlike outing for Kelly, who was held to 73 pitches as he transitions from a long relief role to starting job. The 25-year-old was serviceable as a starter for the Cardinals in a much larger sample last season (3.74 ERA over 91.1 innings), but didn't offer many strikeouts and relied on stranding a higher-than-normal amount of baserunners.
Jul 10 2013Kelly isn't expected to make a start until July 27 after the Cardinals return from the All-Star break, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports. The Cardinals' schedule won't necessitate a fifth starter until nearly two weeks after the All-Star Game, so Kelly will work as a long reliever for the team in the interim. Kelly will make his final start before the break Friday against the Cubs.
Jul 6 2013Kelly gave up four runs over six innings and did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 5-4 win over the Marlins.Kelly probably did enough to hold down the fifth starter spot, although the Cardinals may use a four-man rotation when possible. Kelly is scheduled to pitch against the Cubs on Friday, but with an off-day Monday and the All-Star break around the corner, St. Louis manager Mike Matheny may opt to skip him.
Jun 22 2013Kelly tossed five scoreless innings of relief against the Rangers on Friday and allowed just five hits with no walks and three strikeouts. After starter Tyler Lyons was chased from the game, having given up four runs over 1.2 innings, Kelly kept the Cardinals in the game with an outstanding relief performance. He's now made four straight scoreless appearances and has five strikeouts and no walks over 7.2 innings in that span. With this performance and a recent one-run over 5.2 inning spot start earlier this month, the Cardinals may consider a switch should they tire of Lyons' recent run of poor outings.
Jun 5 2013Kelly (0-3) made his first start of the year Wednesday, going 5.2 innings while giving up two runs (one earned) and striking out two in the loss to Arizona.Kelly got the start because the Cardinals wanted to keep their usual starters on regular rest after the doubleheader on Saturday. He was saddled with the loss but pitched relatively well Wednesday. He will move back to the bullpen after this start, but Kelly proved that he can be used if any of the Cardinals' current starters falter down the stretch.
Jun 3 2013Kelly will start Wednesday against the Diamondbacks, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Kelly, who made 16 starts for the Cardinals in 2012, has appeared in 16 games this season with less than desirable results. Overall, he's 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA, 1.929 WHIP, and 19:7 K:BB ratio in 18.2 innings, with his most lengthy outing occurring on May 25 (three innings with two earned runs and six strikeouts).
Jun 3 2013Kelly may be selected to fill the starter spot opening for Wednesday's game, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Kelly started 16 games for the Cardinals last season and may get the nod thanks to that experience. Seth Maness is also a possibility for the spot-start, but neither have pitched extended innings in over a month.
May 19 2013Kelly allowed three hits and two earned runs in the 10th inning and took the loss Saturday. With the bases loaded in the 10th, Kelly allowed a two-run single to Jeff Bianchi that scored Aramis Ramirez and Carlos Gomez. The loss drops him to 0-2 on the season and raises his ERA to 7.36. Kelly has struggled thus far in 2013, allowing 24 hits and 12 earned runs in 14.2 innings pitched.
Apr 22 2013Kelly may see his workload increased, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Kelly has only made four appearances on the season and both pitching coach Derek Lilliquest an manager Mike Matheny would like to carve out a more consistent role for Kelly in the Cardinals bullpen.
Apr 8 2013Kelly's pitching hand, which was hit with a line drive Sunday, is expected to be fine, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. There was some slight tenderness following the game but Kelly didn't require an X-ray and indicated he could pitch today if needed.
Mar 27 2013Kelly will begin the season in the St. Louis bullpen with Shelby Miller winning the fifth starter role.Kelly will likely have a swingman role in the bullpen and is probably the top candidate to enter the rotation if there's an opening.
Mar 24 2013Shelby Miller is viewed as the leader for the final rotation spot over Kelly, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. While manager Mike Matheny wouldn't reveal who was in the lead, he said "it's getting a little more obvious."Miller and Kelly boast comparable ERAs this spring, but Miller's 11:3 K:BB ratio drastically trumps Kelly's 2:5, likely making Miller's production more sustainable. The two pitchers will throw back-to-back during Monday's game, after which the Cardinals will announce the winner of the competition. As the player with a top prospect pedigree and more lofty strikeout totals, Miller has the higher fantasy appeal of the two pitchers.
Mar 12 2013The Cardinals will make a decision between Kelly and Shelby Miller for the fifth starter spot after Thursday's Grapefruit League game, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. It's possible that Kelly's versatility will lead him to the bullpen, but either way, the Cards want to make a decision in order to give their fifth starter enough innings in the final three starts of spring training to ensure they are fully stretched out for the start of the season.
Mar 2 2013Kelly walked a pair during two scoreless innings in his first start of the spring Friday. The versatile right-hander is in the mix for the final spot in the rotation this spring, but it's unclear if the Cards will simply keep him on the roster as the long man in the bullpen, if he fails to earn the job in competition with Trevor Rosenthal and Shelby Miller (shoulder) this spring.
Feb 5 2013Chris Carpenter is out indefinitely and likely to miss all of 2013 creating an open spot in the Cardinals' rotation for Kelly, Shelby Miller, or Trevor Rosenthal to win in Spring Training. While Miller and Rosenthal have the blue-chip prospect status on their side, Kelly has 107 quality MLB innings under his belt from 2012, including 16 starts. He pitched to a 3.53 ERA, though his 1.38 WHIP was 16th-worst among NL starters with at least 100 innings. He doesn't offer nearly the upside of the others and profiles similarly to teammate Jake Westbrook.
Oct 25 2012Kelly will be brought into spring training conditioned as a starter, Cardinals GM John Mozeliak told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.Kelly started 16 games for the Cardinals this year, and with the question marks surrounding most of the St. Louis rotation this offseason, he'll be given an opportunity to double that amount in 2013.
Sep 22 2012Kelly took the loss Friday in the bottom of the 11th inning. The Cubs did a good job of manufacturing a run once Kelly gave up a leadoff single. In two appearance out of the bullpen after a decent run as a starter, Kelly has given up four hits and one run in two innings.
Sep 19 2012With Chris Carpenter returning to action, Kelly will be headed to the bullpen, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Kelly will probably finish the season as a reliever, but he could receive a spot start if Carpenter or Jake Westbrook (oblique) miss a start.
Sep 15 2012Kelly gave up three runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts over five innings against the Dodgers on Friday.Though it wasn't his most dominant performance of the season, Kelly pitched well enough to be in line for the win. Unfortunately, the bullpen let him down this time out. He's now got a 3.60 ERA with a 69:35 K:BB over 100 innings this season and will look to improve on those numbers when he faces the lowly Astros his next time out.
Sep 10 2012Kelly gave up two runs over six innings Sunday, getting a no-decision, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. With Jake Westbrook suffering an oblique injury, Kelly could stick in the rotation even with Chris Carpenter returning.
Sep 3 2012Kelly earned a victory Monday against the Mets as he pitched 6.2 innings and allowed two runs, five hits and two walks to go along with four strikeouts.Kelly has certainly shown promise since being called up in June, but his 1.44 WHIP makes him a tricky option for fantasy owners.
Aug 29 2012Kelly (4-6) gave up five runs on eight hits in five innings Wednesday against Pittsburgh. He walkd three and struck out three in the loss.Pedro Alvarez's three-run homer was the big blow. Kelly's ERA still looks respectable at 3.61, but he's been very hittable, posting a 1.47 WHIP, a sign that more ERA regression is imminent.
Aug 25 2012Kelly allowed one run on four hits, walking one and striking out six in a three inning relief stint against the Reds on Friday night.Taking over for an ineffective Lance Lynn after Lynn allowed a couple of base runners to reach to begin the third inning, Kelly kept the Reds in check long enough for the Cardinal bats to get going and ended up collecting the win in an 8-5 St; Louis victory.
Aug 25 2012Kelly will replace Lance Lynn in the Cardinals' rotation for the time being, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Lynn has really struggled of late, so manager Mike Matheny opted to give him a bit of a mental break an insert Kelly into the rotation. Kelly, who owns a 3.26 ERA, fared well in his stint as a starter earlier this season, so he could be worth grabbing if you are in need of starters.
Aug 15 2012Kelly will move to a bullpen role when Jaime Garcia (shoulder) returns to action Sunday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Kelly has held his own as a starter, posting a 3.41 ERA over 12 starts, but he will be the pitcher that loses his spot in rotation to Garcia. Consider Kelly the top option should the Cardinals need another starter the rest of the way.
Aug 14 2012Kelly notched the win against the Diamondbacks Tuesday, giving up two earned runs and striking out six in 6.1 innings of work.Kelly (3-5) pitched well in what may be his final start in the rotation. His only mistake was giving up a two-run homer to Miguel Montero in the seventh. Kelly has pitched well in place of the injured Jaime Garcia (shoulder), but with Garcia's return nearing manager Mike Matheny will have to decide whether or not to keep Kelly (3.41 ERA) in the rotation or not.
Aug 8 2012Kelly allowed seven runs (four earned) on nine hits and a walk during Wednesday's 15-0 loss to San Francisco. The Cardinals' run differential indicates that they are a better team than the record shows, but Kelly and the rest of the pitching staff did their best to correct that Wednesday night. Kelly didn't allow more than three runs in any of his previous four losses this year, but there's no doubt that he deserved this one. Despite a 3.47 ERA his record stands at 2-5.
Aug 4 2012Kelly gave up three runs on 10 hits and two walks with four strikeouts over 5.2 innings against the Brewers on Friday.Kelly got hit hard early and allowed all three runs in the second inning. But he held his own and bounced back to hold the Brewers scoreless for then next 3.2 innings and gave the Cards a chance to climb back in and win this one. The outing didn't do very nice things to his WHIP, but overall he had himself a decent night. He'll face the Giants next while at home where he has a 2.75 ERA over seven starts.
Jul 28 2012Kelly took the loss in Saturday's 3-2 decision against the Cubs, allowing three runs and striking out six in 6.1 innings.Kelly has been surprisingly consistent for the Cardinals, as he's pitched at least six innings and given up three runs or less in each of his last seven starts. Unfortunately, he hasn't received much run support in those outings, with just a 1-4 record over that span despite his excellent pitching.
Jul 24 2012Kelly gave up three runs -- two earned -- on four hits over six innings in a loss to the Dodgers on Monday night. He struck out one and walked three, giving up a home run to Luis Cruz is the losing effort. Kelly has a favorable matchup Saturday against the Cubs, but his extremely low strikeout rate will make him a volatile option for those in deeper formats as long as he remains a part of the St. Louis rotation.
Jul 18 2012Kelly hurled his fifth quality outing in a row Tuesday, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk over six innings, as St. Louis lost 3-2 to Milwaukee.Unfortunately, Kelly suffered his second defeat of the season as the Cardinals offense continued to stagnate. He still boasts a 2.75 ERA on the season, though his 4.34 FIP and .296 BABIP could begin to reverse a solid (to date) ERA. Kelly will likely take the hill early next week against the Dodgers in his next slated start.
Jul 4 2012Kelly served up a three-run homer Tuesday in the third inning right after a throwing error by teammate Yadier Molina, taking the first loss of his career.Kelly threw six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks with five strikeouts in St. Louis' 3-2 loss to Colorado. He has been very solid in his five nods as a rookie with a 1-1 record, 3.29 ERA, and 16:8 K:BB ratio. Kelly will look to continue it Sunday against Miami.
Jun 27 2012Kelly tossed his second quality start in a row Wednesday, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks across six innings, though the Cardinals lost to the Marlins.Kelly, who struck out three, didn't factor in the decision after his relief allowed back-to-back homers in the seventh. Even though his opposition is hitting at a .315 clip in his four starts, he has taken advantage of stellar control (four walks allowed) and an 80.1 left-on-base percentage to post a 3.38 ERA. Kelly next takes the hill Tuesday against Colorado.
Jun 16 2012Kelly gave up three runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk while striking out three batters over 4.1 innings in a 10-7 win over the Royals.Mike Moustakas drove in all three of the runs that Kelly allowed in his second major league start. It's too early to pass judgement on Kelly, so fantasy owners will probably want to take a wait-and-see approach. His minor league numbers aren't indicative of a guy who will be worth owning in most formats, but the Cardinals seem to have a knack for developing pitchers and boast a formidable lineup that provides plenty of run support.
Jun 10 2012Kelly yielded just one run on seven hits and a walk across five innings in his MLB debut as St. Louis lost to Cleveland. He didn't factor in the decision, though.Kelly also punched out four Indians to surpass the mediocre 5.6 K/9IP from his time in the Pacific Coast League. With Jaime Garcia (shoulder) out for at least four weeks, Kelly has a definite chance to make an impact in the Cardinals' rotation. After a solid initial effort, his next start on the docket arrives Saturday against the Royals.
