Apr 11 2024Odorizzi was released by the Rays on Thursday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi signed a minor-league deal with the Rays in March after missing all of the 2023 season while recovering from shoulder surgery. He made two starts with Triple-A Durham but was rocked for seven runs with a 2:5 K:BB over 5.1 frames, although Odorizzi contends that he was affected by a hamstring injury. The Rays aren't exactly flush with rotation depth right now, so it speaks to how far away Odorizzi is from being major-league ready that the team cut him loose. Odorizzi -- who turns 35 later this month -- will seek to sign on with another organization after his hamstring heals.
Mar 27 2024Rays manager Kevin Cash said Wednesday that Odorizzi has been reassigned to Triple-A Durham to begin the season, Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Sun reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi signed a minor-league deal with the Rays on March 15 and didn't have sufficient time to make a case for a spot in the Opening Day rotation, but the organization isn't closing the door on him filling a starting role with the big club once he's fully stretched out. According to Cash, Odorizzi will make his first start with Durham on Tuesday, and the Rays will go "start-to-start" with him in the minors before deciding if or when he'll be called up. The 34-year-old Odorizzi owns a lifetime 3.99 ERA and 1.25 WHIP across 1,253.1 innings in the majors, but his outlook is murky after he missed the entire 2023 season while recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder.
Mar 26 2024Odorizzi will pitch in Tuesday's game versus the Tigers rather than a minor-league game Wednesday as initially scheduled, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rays decided Tuesday's contest would be a truer test as to how close the veteran right-hander is to being ready to pitch in a regular-season game with the big club. Odorizzi missed the entire 2023 season while recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder and will begin 2024 in the minors. However, if he looks sharp, he could join the Rays sooner rather than later, particularly since there is a need in the rotation with Shane Baz (elbow) or Taj Bradley (pectoral) out.
Mar 25 2024Odorizzi won't be included on the Rays' Opening Day roster with Tampa Bay expected to begin the season with Tyler Alexander as the No. 5 option in its rotation, Jayson Stark of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi is fully healthy again after missing the entire 2023 season while recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder, but after he had been a free agent all offseason until signing a minor-league deal with the Rays on March 15, he didn't have sufficient time to make a case for the final spot in the big-league rotation. The right-hander's next steps remain unclear, but he could elect to continue ramping up at the Rays' extended spring training facility over the next few weeks with the hope of eventually gaining consideration for the big-league roster. If Alexander falters in his role as a No. 5 starter/bulk reliever, long reliever Jacob Waguespack would likely be next in line before Odorizzi to fill the void, at least until either of Shane Baz (elbow) or Taj Bradley (pectoral) is cleared to return from the injured list.
Mar 15 2024Odorizzi agreed to a minor-league contract with the Rays on Friday that includes an invite to big-league camp. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander was with the Rays from 2013 to 2017 and will rejoin the organization after sitting out last season while recovering from shoulder surgery. Odorizzi made 22 starts in 2022 split between Houston and Atlanta and had a 4.40 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 86:35 K:BB across 106.1 innings.
Feb 12 2024Odorizzi (shoulder) has been throwing off a mound without restrictions and hopes to sign with a team in the coming weeks, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi didn't pitch last season, having undergone an arthroscopic debridement procedure on his right shoulder last April. He appears to be fully recovered, though, and has thrown for scouts from 10-to-12 interested clubs, per Morosi. The 33-year-old posted a 4.40 ERA and 86:35 K:BB over 106.1 innings covering 22 starts with Houston and Atlanta in 2022.
Mar 29 2023The Rangers placed Odorizzi (arm) on the 60-day injured list Wednesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Initial reports suggested that Odorizzi had been dealing with normal fatigue or soreness in his right arm, but his move to the 60-day IL suggests the issue is more serious than it previously appeared. The 33-year-old was acquired from Atlanta over the winter, but it remains unclear when he might be able to debut for Texas. Grant reports that Odorizzi isn't expected to require surgery to address the arm injury.
Mar 25 2023Odorizzi's arm injury could keep him out long enough to require a trip to the 60-day injured list, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi has been dealing with arm fatigue this spring, and it seems as though the issue may be more serious than that. His timeline isn't entirely clear, but the fact that a trip to the 60-day injured list is in play suggests that he's set to miss substantial time.
Mar 15 2023Rangers manager Bruce Bochy confirmed Wednesday that Odorizzi (arm) won't have enough time to complete his throwing progression prior to Opening Day, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi resumed throwing bullpen sessions just over a week ago but has yet to pitch in any Cactus League or minor-league games up to this point in spring training, so he looks like he'll stay back in Arizona to continue building up when the Rangers close camp in less than two weeks and head back to Texas. The Rangers have characterized Odorizzi's injury as right arm fatigue, so he doesn't appear to be dealing with a major concern and will most likely be ticketed for a brief stint on the shelf to begin the season. Odorizzi's absence should clear a path for Dane Dunning to break camp as the Rangers' No. 5 starter, and the team may have another spot available in the rotation if Nathan Eovaldi (side) is unable to gain clearance for Opening Day.
Mar 7 2023Odorizzi's (arm) potential availability for Opening Day is in doubt, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi threw another bullpen session Sunday but has yet to face hitters this spring after dealing with some fatigue in his pitching arm. The Rangers are expected to have a better idea next week as to Odorizzi's outlook. He's projected to serve as a multi-inning reliever for Texas.
Mar 6 2023Odorizzi (arm) threw a bullpen session Sunday, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi is behind other pitchers due to what Texas general manager Chris Young described as normal fatigue. That he was able to throw Sunday indicates a Cactus League debut is in the offing. A long time starter in MLB, Odorizzi is expected to pitch multi-inning relief for the Rangers in 2023.
Mar 1 2023Rangers general manager Chris Young said Wednesday that Odorizzi is a bit behind schedule in spring training due to right arm fatigue, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Young sounded unconcerned, indicating that Odorizzi was dealing with typical early spring aches and pains. It's not clear, however, when Odorizzi might be cleared for Cactus League action. The veteran right-hander currently appears to be in line to fill a long-relief role for Texas, though he could be set for a good number of piggyback starts or turns as a primary pitcher out of the bullpen.
Nov 9 2022Odorizzi and cash considerations were acquired by the Rangers from Atlanta on Wednesday in exchange for Kolby Allard. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi was acquired by Atlanta from Houston at the trade deadline and finished 2022 with a 4.40 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 86:35 K:BB across 106.1 innings. The 32-year-old was a fringe rotation piece for Atlanta but should have a more secure starting spot on Texas' staff to open 2023. Odorizzi isn't officially under contract for next year but has a $12.5 million player option, and the trade indicates he's expected to exercise that option.
Oct 4 2022Odorizzi (6-6) got the win after he tossed five innings, giving up one run on two hits and a walk while striking out seven in Tuesday's victory against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi pitched three scoreless frames to open Tuesday's outing before surrendering a solo home run to Jesus Sanchez in the fourth inning. The long ball accounted for the only blemish on his line while his seven strikeouts were his highest total since Aug. 22. The right-hander will finish the regular season with a 4.40 ERA and 1.33 WHIP while striking out 86 batters over 106.1 innings in 22 starts.
Sep 28 2022Odorizzi did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks over 3.2 innings in a 3-2 loss against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For the fourth start in a row, Odorizzi failed to complete five innings. Wednesday's struggles were highlighted by a 0:3 K:BB on the night as manager Brian Snitker opted to turn to the bullpen in the fourth inning with Atlanta fighting for the division title. In nine starts since being traded to Atlanta, Odorizzi owns a 5.69 ERA with one win compared to three losses. He is tentatively scheduled to face Miami next week.
Sep 24 2022Odorizzi (5-6) took the loss in Friday's 9-1 rout at the hands of the Phillies, surrendering eight runs on 10 hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Ks salvaged a little fantasy value for the right-hander, but this was still Odorizzi's worst performance since being shipped to Atlanta at the trade deadline. His 5.97 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 33:14 K:BB through 37.2 innings for his new club are shaky at best, but with Spencer Strider (oblique) landing on the IL this week, Odorizzi's spot in the rotation for the rest of the season seems secure.
Sep 17 2022Odorizzi took a no-decision versus the Phillies on Saturday. He allowed a run on two hits and one walk while striking out five over 4.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While the surface stats look good, the Phillies were able to work some long at-bats against the right-hander. Odorizzi exited the game one out short of a win after throwing 61 of 93 pitches for strikes. He's now failed to complete six innings in six of his seven starts for Atlanta since coming over in a trade from Houston at the deadline. Through 93.2 innings this year, he has a 4.04 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 73:28 K:BB. Odorizzi is tentatively projected for a rematch on the road against the Phillies next week.
Sep 11 2022Odorizzi registered a no-decision during Sunday's 8-7 loss to Seattle, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 3.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his return from an arm injury, Odorizzi served up a leadoff Julio Rodriguez long ball but kept Seattle's offense under control otherwise until he was chased in the fourth inning following four baserunners and three runs. The poor outing is the 32-year-old's second with Atlanta though he's held the opposition to no more than two runs in his other four turns. He's pitched to a 4.96 ERA and 1.55 WHIP in 29 innings with Atlanta and is scheduled to take the mound again next weekend against Philadelphia.
Sep 10 2022Odorizzi (arm) is slated to start Sunday's game in Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi was scratched from his most recent scheduled start last weekend due to arm fatigue, but he'll be plugged back into Atlanta's rotation for the series finale in Seattle after he completed a bullpen session Wednesday without incident. Since joining Atlanta in an Aug. 1 deal with Houston, Odorizzi has posted a 1-2 record to go with a 4.26 ERA and 1.46 WHIP across 25.1 innings.
Sep 7 2022Odorizzi (arm) threw a bullpen session Wednesday and is tentatively in line to start Sunday's game in Seattle, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Before Atlanta locks Odorizzi in for a start this weekend, the coaching and training staffs will likely check in him with Thursday to see how he feels physically a day after the side session. Odorizzi hasn't pitched since Aug. 28 after he was scratched in advance of his previous start last weekend against the Marlins, when he experienced some arm fatigue.
Sep 3 2022Odorizzi has been scratched from Saturday's start against the Marlins due to arm fatigue, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi was relatively effective over his last two starts, but Atlanta will choose to skip his turn through the rotation this weekend due to his arm issue. Bryce Elder will take his place as Saturday's starter, while Odorizzi is expected to return to the mound sometime during Atlanta's series in Seattle next weekend.
Aug 28 2022Odorizzi allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out four over 5.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Cardinals on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi limited the Cardinals to one walk through five innings, but he gave up a two-out solo home run to Lars Nootbaar in the sixth. The Cardinals built off of that and added three straight singles to earn another run before Dylan Lee was brought in as a reliever. Odorizzi fell one out short of a quality start in this one. He's struggled a bit with Atlanta, posting a 4.28 ERA and 1.46 WHIP across 25.1 innings through five starts after he was traded from Houston at the deadline. The right-hander is projected for a favorable home start versus the Marlins next weekend.
Aug 22 2022Odorizzi (1-2) earned the win Monday, allowing one run on four hits and no walks over six innings against the Pirates. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After three sub-par performances since being traded, Odorizzi was sharp Monday against a weak Pirates lineup to earn his first win with Atlanta and fifth on the season. He allowed just four baserunners through six innings, and his only mistake on the night was a solo home run off the bat of Oneil Cruz. He will take a 3.95 ERA into his next scheduled start which is tentatively scheduled against Miami this weekend.
Aug 17 2022Odorizzi (0-2) took the loss Wednesday, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks over five innings against the Mets. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Things got off to a bad start for Odorizzi on Wednesday, as Starling Marte and Francisco Lindor both clocked home runs in the first inning. The veteran then served up a home run to Brett Baty in the second and a run-scoring double in the sixth. Odorizzi has now surrendered nine runs in 13,2 innings as a Brave and has inflated his ERA to 4.15. He will look to find his form again in his next start, which is lined up to be at Pittsburgh next week.
Aug 8 2022Odorizzi (4-4) was dealt the loss in his Atlanta debut in Game 1 of a doubleheader Saturday with the Mets. He struck out four over 4.2 innings and was charged with three runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Odorizzi wasn't especially effective or efficient with his pitch count in his Atlanta debut, it looks like he'll maintain a spot in the rotation moving forward after Ian Anderson was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday. According to David O'Brien of The Athletic, Anderson will remain on the taxi squad and start one game of another doubleheader this upcoming Saturday in Miami, but manager Brian Snitker said the right-hander will return to Gwinnett following the twin bill in light of his recent struggles. Odorizzi, meanwhile, had generally pitched well prior to being acquired from Houston last week, so Atlanta won't pull the plug on him as a starter after one substandard outing. He's expected to make his second start with Atlanta in the other doubleheader game against the Marlins this weekend.
Aug 3 2022Odorizzi, whom Atlanta acquired from the Astros on Monday, will make his team debut Saturday as a starter in one of the doubleheader games versus the Mets, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The upcoming twin bill will be the first of two doubleheaders on consecutive Saturdays for Atlanta, so expect the team to maintain a six-man rotation for at least the next two weeks. After that, manager Brian Snitker and his staff will likely assess where his pitching staff stands from a health and performance standpoint before determining whether to move back to a five-man rotation or keep the six-man setup in place. If all of Atlanta's other starters remain healthy following the two doubleheaders and Snitker's preference is to go with a five-man rotation, Odorizzi and Ian Anderson would seemingly be the pitchers most at risk of losing out on a starting spot. Over his 12 starts with Houston this season spanning 60 innings, Odorizzi turned in a respectable 3.75 ERA and 1.15 WHIP.
Aug 1 2022Odorizzi was traded to Atlanta from Houston on Monday in exchange for reliever Will Smith, Mark reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Both teams decided to deal from positions of strength, and Atlanta will improve its starting pitching depth over the remainder of the season.
Jul 31 2022Odorizzi allowed two hits and two walks while striking out eight in seven scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi left his last start after developing a blister and yielding six runs in five innings versus the Athletics. He responded with a stellar start, his second of at least seven frames with no runs allowed in five July outings. The right-hander was denied the win when Jesse Winker took Ryne Stanek deep for a game-tying home run in the eighth. Odorizzi now has a 3.75 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 46:17 K:BB in 60 innings across 12 starts this year. He's lined up for a road start in Cleveland next weekend.
Jul 29 2022Odorizzi (finger) is scheduled to start Sunday against the Mariners, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi dealt with a blister during his previous start Monday against the A's, but he's apparently been cleared to make his next turn through the rotation. He surrendered six runs during that outing and has a 5.91 ERA and 17:3 K:BB across 21.1 innings through four starts in July.
Jul 26 2022Astros manager Dusty Baker said after Monday's 7-5 loss to the Athletics that Odorizzi dealt with a blister on his right middle finger prior to exiting the contest, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to Rome, Odorizzi first noticed the blister in the second inning and had the training staff pop it with a needle two innings later. The right-hander was forced to pitch through some discomfort and was ultimately lifted after giving up six earned runs over five innings en route to taking the loss. Baker said he's uncertain if the blister will affect Odorizzi's next turn through the rotation, which is tentatively set to come Sunday versus Seattle.
Jul 25 2022Odorizzi left Monday's start against the Athletics due to an undisclosed injury. He allowed six runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out two over five innings prior to his departure. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi was visited by the team trainer twice over the course of his start, and he was unable to talk his way into staying in the game the second time. The nature of his injury is a mystery at this time.
Jul 17 2022Odorizzi allowed three runs on five hits and a hit batsman while striking out five in 5.1 innings in a 4-3 loss Sunday against Oakland. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi was excellent through the first five innings, holding Oakland scoreless and retiring the side in order three times. After getting the first batter out in the sixth, he gave up a solo shot to Ramon Laureano and then consecutive singles and was taken out. After walking seven batters in his first three starts, the 32-year-old has issued just seven free passes in his last seven outings, spanning 39 innings. In that time he has a 2.31 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 31 strikeouts.
Jul 14 2022Odorizzi will no longer start Friday's game against the Athletics, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's still possible that Odorizzi will draw a start during the weekend series, as the Astros have not named starters for Saturday or Sunday. Jose Urquidy will start Friday in Odorizzi's place.
Jul 10 2022Odorizzi (4-2) allowed four hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in seven shutout innings, earning the win Sunday over the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Quality of opponent aside, this was a convincing performance for Odorizzi after he struggled in his first game back from ligaments strains and sprains in his lower right leg. He posted his longest start of the year with a season high in strikeouts. The right-hander has been generally effective with a 3.38 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 31:14 K:BB across 42.2 innings in nine starts overall. Odorizzi is lined up for another start versus the Athletics next weekend, with that game in Houston.
Jul 5 2022Odorizzi didn't factor into the decision in Monday's 7-6 win over the Royals, giving up five runs on nine hits and a walk over four innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his first start since May 16, Odorizzi looked rusty, tossing 58 of 90 pitches for strikes and allowing runs in each of the first three innings before he managed to actually escape a jam unscathed in the fourth. Houston will likely give the right-hander another couple turns to let him get comfortable again, but if Odorizzi continues to struggle, he may have to work things out in the bullpen while the Astros go back to a five-man rotation.
Jul 4 2022Odorizzi (lower leg) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list ahead of Monday's start against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi was out since mid-May due to strains and sprains to ligaments in his right foot and ankle, but he recently made a pair of rehab starts and posted a 2.25 ERA and 0.88 WHIP in eight innings. The Astros will roll with a six-man rotation this week now that Odorizzi is available, and he should be able to handle a relatively full workload Monday since he tossed 78 pitches during his most recent rehab start.
Jul 3 2022Odorizzi (lower leg) will start Monday's game against the Royals, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Astros will utilize a six-man rotation this week with Odorizzi returning to action, while Justin Verlander will be pushed back to start Thursday to manage his workload. Odorizzi recently made a pair of rehab starts and posted a 2.25 ERA and 0.88 WHIP while striking out 10 in eight innings.
Jul 2 2022Astros manager Dusty Baker hinted Saturday that Odorizzi (lower leg) could be part of a six-man rotation if the right-hander returns from the 15-day injured list during the upcoming week, Adam Spolane of Sports Radio 610 Houston reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Odorizzi has been sidelined since mid-May with strains and sprains to the ligaments of his right foot and ankle, Cristian Javier has stepped into the Houston rotation. Javier appears to have solidified himself as a full-time member of the rotation after allowing just one hit and striking out 27 over 14 innings between his past two starts, but Odorizzi doesn't look as though he'll be on the outs for a starting role. The 32-year-old fared well in his second rehab start Wednesday at Double-A Corpus Christi, striking out six over five scoreless frames while allowing three hits and no walks. He tossed 78 pitches in that outing, so he should be stretched out enough to make his return to the Houston rotation at some point during the four-game home series with Kansas City that begins Monday.
Jun 29 2022Odorizzi (lower leg) is scheduled to make his second rehab start Wednesday with Double-A Corpus Christi, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi will drop down to the Double-A level after he made his first rehab start last week at Triple-A Sugar Land. He worked three innings for Sugar Land in his first game action since suffering the left leg injury during his May 16 start with Houston, striking out four while allowing two earned runs on two hits and two walks. Depending how deep into Wednesday's start Odorizzi goes and how well he performs, he could be cleared to return from the 15-day injured list next week. It's unclear if the Astros plan on immediately reinserting Odorizzi into the rotation upon his activation, but Jose Urquidy would likely be most at risk of moving to the bullpen or heading to the minors if Odorizzi is brought back as a starter.
Jun 21 2022Odorizzi (lower leg) said he'll begin a rehab assignment Friday at Triple-A Sugar Land that will likely consist of two starts, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi declared himself ready for game action after he tested out his left foot/ankle injury Tuesday, when he threw a bullpen session and took part in fielding drills on the mound. Assuming the Astros intend to bring Odorizzi back in a starting role and he sticks to the schedule of two rehab outings, he'll tentatively line up to rejoin the Houston rotation as soon as July 4. Cristian Javier or Jose Urquidy are the most likely candidates to lose out on a spot in the rotation once Odorizzi is activated from the 15-day injured list.
Jun 18 2022Odorizzi (leg) continues to throw bullpen sessions and is fielding at increased intensity, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi has been throwing bullpens consistently since late May, though the last step in his recovery appears to be his ability to field the position at full speed. With his activity ramping up further, Odorizzi is nearing a rehab assignment, and he could be in line for a return in late June or early July.
Jun 12 2022Odorizzi (foot/ankle) will need a rehab assignment and isn't doing full-speed fielding yet, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He is recovering from some strains and sprains to ligaments of his right foot/ankle and took part in fielding drills Sunday at 50-to-60 percent effort. Odorizzi seems to be tracking toward a return in late June or early July.
Jun 7 2022Odorizzi (lower leg) threw a 20-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi built up to 57 pitches during a bullpen Saturday, but he had a lighter workload during Tuesday's throwing session. However, the right-hander has also been able to run more in recent days. He hasn't yet resumed sprinting but is expected to do more running Wednesday and Thursday before throwing another bullpen Friday. Odorizzi will need to resume fielding at some point, but he's made good progress in his recovery over the last two weeks.
Jun 6 2022Odorizzi (leg) threw a 57-pitch bullpen session Saturday and had no complications, Robert Falkoff of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi continues to ramp up his activity and has completed bullpen sessions of 41 and 57 pitches. Despite the progress, manager Dusty Baker stated there is still no timetable for Odorizzi to embark on a rehab assignment. That likely leaves him in line for a return in late June at the earliest.
May 27 2022Odorizzi (lower leg) completed a 41-pitch bullpen session Friday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was Odorizzi's second bullpen session since landing on the injured list in mid-May as he continues to ramp his throwing program. The right-hander apparently still has some hurdles to clear before beginning a rehab assignment, but he doesn't appear too far off from that stage.
May 24 2022Odorizzi (lower leg) completed a 25-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi was back on the mound just eight days after he suffered what looked to be a severe leg injury during his start against the Red Sox. Follow-up tests on Odorizzi's right leg revealed some strains and sprains to ligaments in his foot and ankle, but none are believed to be significant, given that he was already cleared to resume playing catch last weekend. The bullpen session represents another step forward in the recovery process for Odorizzi, who suggested after the workout that he's close to heading out on a minor-league rehab assignment.
May 20 2022Odorizzi (lower leg) played catch Friday, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi was taken off the field on a stretcher Monday against Boston, and he underwent an MRI recently that revealed some strains and sprains to the ligaments of his right foot/ankle. While the right-hander is still in the early stages of his recovery and doesn't yet have a timetable to return, it's encouraging that he's already been cleared to throw.
May 18 2022Odorizzi said his recent MRI revealed some strains and sprains to the ligaments of his right foot/ankle, but the Astros haven't established a timeline for his return to action, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi noted that he initially feared he ruptured his Achilles' tendon Monday, when he was carted off the field after going down in pain while he attempted to run and cover first base. Though the right-hander is confident that he'll return to this season, he still appears destined to spent well beyond the minimum 15 days on the IL. A clearer target date for his return likely won't materialize until he's able to resume on-field workouts.
May 17 2022The Astros placed Odorizzi on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with lower left leg discomfort. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The diagnosis matches how the Astros labeled the injury shortly after Odorizzi was carted off the field in the sixth inning of his start Monday against the Red Sox. The team relays that Odorizzi underwent an MRI on his leg earlier Tuesday, but a clearer update on the exact nature and severity of his injury may not be known for another day or two. Houston recalled reliever Seth Martinez from Triple-A Sugar Land to take Odorizzi's spot on the 26-man active roster, but the team may not tab a replacement for him in the rotation. Odorizzi had already been part of a six-man rotation, so the Astros may choose to condense their starting staff to the traditional five pitchers in the wake of his absence.
May 16 2022Odorizzi was carted off the field during Monday's game against Boston after suffering an apparent leg injury, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. He allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and one walk while striking out four over five innings prior to exiting. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi suffered the injury after popping off the mound in an effort to cover first base, but he crumbled to the ground before reaching the bag. The nature of his injury is unclear at this time, though it's worth noting that he wasn't able to put any weight on his left leg, per Bill Koch of The Providence Journal.
May 8 2022Odorizzi (3-2) yielded one hit and two walks over five shutout innings Sunday, striking out five and earning a win over the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The only danger that Odorizzi faced in the victory came during the fourth inning; after two walks and a wild pitch, he had two runners in scoring position with one out but escaped the jam unscathed. The veteran righty has allowed just one run over 17.2 frames during his three-start winning streak after giving up 12 runs (nine earned) in his first three outings. Odorizzi will carry a 3.38 ERA into next week's projected start in Washington.
May 3 2022Odorizzi (2-2) earned the win over Seattle on Monday, completing 6.2 scoreless innings during which he allowed four hits and one walk while striking out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi didn't miss many bats in the contest -- he induced only six swinging strikes -- but he didn't give up any extra-base hits or allow any Mariners to reach second base. The right-hander started the season poorly, posting a 9.00 ERA through his first three starts, but he has bounced back to allow just one run over 12.2 frames across his past two trips to the mound. He'll look to keep rolling in his next start, which lines up to come at home against Detroit this weekend.
Apr 26 2022Odorizzi (1-2) tossed six innings, giving up one run on one hit and a walk while striking out four on his way to a win Tuesday over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi was almost perfect Tuesday with his only run given up coming on an Adolis Garcia solo homer in the bottom of the second inning. His four strikeouts were a season-high while he picked up his first win of the campaign. After back to back challenging outings, Tuesday's start brought his season numbers from a 9.00 ERA and 2.56 WHIP to a more manageable 6.00 ERA and 1.67 WHIP. He'll look to build off of this start when he faces the Mariners on Monday.
Apr 21 2022Odorizzi (0-2) took the loss Wednesday, surrendering six runs (three earned) on two hits and four walks over two-thirds of an inning as the Astros fell 6-0 to the Angels. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The first five Los Angeles batters all reached base against Odorizzi, and while a Yuli Gurriel two-out error after he'd already gotten the hook tacked some additional runs onto his ledger, there's no silver lining for the right-hander here. Odorizzi has a brutal 9.00 ERA, 2.56 WHIP and 5:7 K:BB through nine innings over his first three starts, and it may not be long before he loses his spot in the rotation entirely given how effective Cristian Javier has been in long relief, including 3.2 scoreless frames Wednesday.
Apr 16 2022Odorizzi (0-1) took the loss during Friday's 11-1 defeat at the hands of the Mariners, allowing four runs on eight hits and three walks with one strikeout in 4.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi permitted multiple baserunners leading to runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings, only for the Houston bullpen to allow seven more runs in the final three innings. That's now consecutive starts going fewer than five innings for the 32-year-old, who has offered little in the way of strikeouts thus far as well.
Apr 8 2022Odorizzi took a no-decision during Friday's 13-6 victory over the Angels, allowing two runs on six hits with two strikeouts in four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi surrendered both runs in the first but settled down to limit Los Angeles' offense thereafter and bide time for Houston's offense to ignite. The 32-year-old is set to face Seattle in his next start Friday and should hold the fifth spot in Houston's rotation until Lance McCullers returns from injury.
Mar 30 2022Manager Dusty Baker confirmed Odorizzi will start the Astros' second game of the season April 8 against the Angels in Anaheim, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi won out over Cristian Javier for the fifth and final spot in the rotation, a role that opened up when it became apparent earlier this spring that Lance McCullers (forearm) wouldn't be ready to go for Opening Day. Though he was moved to the bullpen during the playoffs last fall when the Astros shortened their rotation, Odorizzi's larger body of MLB starting experience and solid first half in 2021 before forearm issues torpedoed his season were enough to give him the edge on Javier for the rotation spot heading into 2022. Odorizzi helped his cause by proving his health in his lone Grapefruit League appearance March 22, when he tossed two scoreless innings against the Mets. He's since continued to build up his pitch count in simulated games.
Oct 15 2021Odorizzi has been included on the Astros' ALCS roster, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The absence of Lance McCullers (forearm) opened a roster spot for Odorizzi, who is a candidate to start Game 4 on Tuesday. The 31-year-old pitched twice against Boston in early June, allowing six earned runs on seven hits and four walks in eight total innings.
Oct 7 2021Odorizzi isn't included on the Astros' ALDS roster, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi made two starts late in the regular season after he returned from a foot injury, but he won't be part of the rotation for the ALDS. However, he'll be on the taxi squad and will be available to fill in during an emergency situation.
Oct 3 2021Odorizzi didn't factor into the decision Saturday against the Athletics after allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk across 4.2 innings, fanning three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi ended a streak of six straight appearances allowing two or fewer runs, and this was his fourth straight no-decision as well. He posted a 3.15 ERA through his five appearances since the beginning of September, but his season-long ERA was a 4.21 mark through 104.2 innings across 24 appearances (23 starts).
Sep 26 2021Odorizzi got a no-decision in Sunday's 4-3 loss to Oakland, allowing one run on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts in four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his first start following a short IL stint, Odorizzi pitched well in permitting only one run but had traffic on the bases each inning and was limited to 82 pitches. The 31-year-old hasn't gone six innings in a start since early July and will likely get one final tune-up before the postseason next weekend against Oakland again.
Sep 23 2021Odorizzi (foot) will start Sunday's game against the Athletics, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi has been on the injured list since Sept. 14 due to right foot soreness, and he'll return to the major-league club after a brief stay on the injured list. Across his last five starts prior to the injury, he recorded a 2.45 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 22 innings.
Sep 16 2021Odorizzi (foot) is optimistic he will be able to return once his stint on the 10-day injured list is up, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was placed on the 10-day IL on Tuesday after what he has described as a "flukey" right foot injury. After ruling out the initial concern of a Linsfranc injury, he was diagnosed with a mid-foot sprain. The earliest the 31-year-old could return is Sept. 24, which he seems confident he can do.
Sep 14 2021Odorizzi was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with right foot soreness, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Dusty Baker revealed following Monday's win that Odorizzi couldn't put any weight on his right foot after exiting the game in the second inning. With that in mind, it's not surprising to see him land on the injured list. The full severity of the injury should become more clear in coming days, but the move to the IL will keep the right-hander sidelined until at least the Sept. 24 game against the Athletics. Houston was previously expected to transition back to a six-man rotation with Zack Greinke (undisclosed) returning from the COVID-19 IL on Tuesday, but the club will likely continue using five starters with Odorizzi on the shelf.
Sep 13 2021Odorizzi left Monday's start against the Rangers due to right foot soreness, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi appeared to suffer the injury while covering first base, though initial indications bring positive news. He allowed two hits and struck out one across 1.1 scoreless frames prior to being lifted.
Sep 7 2021Odorizzi allowed two runs on five hits while striking out five in five innings against the Mariners on Tuesday. He did not factor into the games decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander gave up a two-run double to JP Crawford in the fifth inning, scoring Luis Torrens and Jared Kelenic. It was the sixth consecutive start in which he lasted at least five innings, compiling a 2.90 ERA and 2-1 record over that stretch. He is expected to start next against the Rangers on Monday.
Sep 2 2021Odorizzi (6-7) was handed the loss against the Mariners on Wednesday after allowing one run on two hits and two walks while striking out seven over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi made it through five scoreless frames but came back for the sixth and was pulled after surrendering a single and a walk to open up the inning. The runner on second came around to score on a sacrifice fly, which ended up being the only run scored by either team. The 31-year-old reached seven strikeouts for just the third time in 13 starts since June 21 and induced 14 whiffs on the day overall. He's allowed two runs or fewer in four of his last five outings but hasn't reached the six-inning mark since July 9. Odorizzi owns a 4.32 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 82:31 K:BB over 89.2 innings and lines up for a rematch against the Mariners next week.
Aug 27 2021Odorizzi allowed two runs on six hits and no walks while striking out five in five innings versus Texas on Friday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander gave up runs in the fourth and fifth innings before he was relieved by Phil Maton. Odorizzi has completed five innings in each of his last four starts, collecting two wins in that span. He's trimmed his ERA to 4.46 with a 1.25 WHIP and 75:29 K:BB across 84.2 innings overall. The 31-year-old projects for a road start in Seattle next week.
Aug 21 2021Odorizzi (6-6) allowed one run on four hits and four walks with eight strikeouts through 5.2 innings, getting the win in Saturday's 15-1 drubbing of the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Entering play, Odorizzi had a 6.52 ERA against the Mariners in two starts this season. He worked to shrink that number Saturday night, cruising through 5.2 innings of one-run ball against Seattle. After striking out three or fewer in his last four starts, the eight whiffs are a welcomed sight. The only damage to his line was a Mitch Haniger homer that came after Odorizzi spent over half an hour sequestered in the dugout while his teammates hung a six-spot on the scoreboard. The 31-year-old's next chance will likely come Friday against the Rangers.
Aug 16 2021Odorizzi allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks over 5.1 innings in Monday's loss to Kansas City. He struck out two and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi gave up three runs through the first three innings Monday, including two RBI base hits by Ryan O'Hearn. His night was over after Hunter Dozier took him deep for a solo shot in the sixth. He's given up at least three runs in five of his last six outings, bumping his season ERA up to 4.74 through 74 innings. Odorizzi is lined up to face the Mariners at home this weekend.
Aug 11 2021Odorizzi (5-6) earned the win Tuesday against the Rockies after tossing five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks while fanning three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi was coming off a woeful start the last time out when he gave up seven runs (six earned) across three innings at the Dodgers, but he managed to bounce back here and posted his first scoreless outing since late June. While he wasn't dominant by any means, this outing might act as a confidence booster for Odorizzi after he had allowed 17 runs (16 earned) across 16.1 innings over his previous four starts.
Aug 5 2021Odorizzi (4-6) was tagged with the loss Wednesday against the Dodgers after allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits and two walks while fanning three across three innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The main reason why Odorizzi lasted just three innings Wednesday was his issue with the long ball, as he gave up a season-worst four homers before departing the contest. Odorizzi allowed three homers in the season opener and seemed to since have that issue under control, but the problems have resurfaced of late and he has given up eight homers over his last four starts. He owns an 8.82 ERA and 1.84 WHIP across 16.1 innings during that four-game sample size.
Jul 29 2021Odorizzi (4-5) allowed three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out three over 5.1 innings to pick up the win over Seattle on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a scoreless first inning, the Astros scored in each of the next five frames to give Odorizzi an 8-0 cushion, which turned out to be enough to survive the starter's third trip through the Mariners lineup. Seattle crushed a pair home runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, including a two-run blast from old friend Abraham Toro, the former Astro who also homered against his former club Tuesday, the same day he was traded to Seattle. Batters are now 10-for-22 when facing Odorizzi for a third time in a game, per Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle. Odorizzi's turn in the rotation comes due next Wednesday on the road against the Dodgers.
Jul 23 2021Odorizzi allowed three runs on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings in Friday's win over the Rangers. He struck out six and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi rolled through fairly easy innings before the Rangers finally broke through in the fifth. He coughed up three runs, including a two-run triple by Nate Lowe, before he was knocked out of the game. It was his second straight game failing to finish the fifth inning but he avoided taking his third straight loss. The 31-year-old's ERA jumped to 4.23 through 55.1 frames. Odorizzi is lined up to take the mound in Seattle next week.
Jul 18 2021Odorizzi (3-5) lasted just 3.1 innings while taking the loss against the White Sox on Saturday. He allowed four runs on six hits and four walks while striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi has pitched well since returning from a forearm injury, posting a 2.29 ERA in 39.1 innings, but he battled command issues Saturday. He walked a season high and allowed as many home runs as he did over the previous 44 innings. Odorizzi's next start is expected Friday or Saturday at home against the Rangers.
Jul 9 2021Odorizzi (3-4) allowed two runs on seven hits over six innings Friday, striking out four and taking a loss against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi worked around a couple of jams before yielding a two-run double to Brett Gardner in the fourth inning. He was handed his first loss since June 3 and broke a three-game winning streak. Still, he enters the All-Star break on a high note, allowing two or fewer runs in five consecutive appearances. The veteran righty lowered his season ERA to 3.61 alongside a 44:12 K:BB through 47.1 innings.
Jul 4 2021Odorizzi (3-3) picked up the win in Saturday's 3-2 victory over Cleveland, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks over six-plus innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander wasn't dominant but he got the job done, tossing 55 of 91 pitches for strikes en route to his first quality start of the season. A late signing and shortened spring training contributed to Odorizzi's rough April, but since the beginning of June the 31-year-old has a 2.25 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 25:8 K:BB through 28 innings.
Jun 27 2021Odorizzi allowed two hits and a walk with three strikeouts in five shutout innings in a no-decision versus Detroit on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi has responded well to Houston's six-man rotation -- he's thrown 10 shutout innings in his last two starts, and he also kept runs off the board in a four-inning relief outing before that. The right-hander has lowered his ERA to 4.08 with a 0.96 WHIP and 38:10 K:BB across 35.1 innings overall. He's only pitched into the sixth inning in one of his eight starts this year. Odorizzi lines up for a road start in Cleveland next weekend.
Jun 21 2021Odorizzi (2-3) picked up the win Monday against Baltimore, striking out nine and walking one while allowing no hits across five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi wasn't fully stretched out for the Monday start, as he threw just 55 pitches in his previous appearance, which came in relief last Tuesday against the Rangers. If the right-hander had have been able to go deeper in the game, he could have been headed for a special night, with him clearly having his strikeout stuff as the Orioles failed to record a hit on any of his 86 pitches (55 strikes). The Astros are planning to utilize a six-man rotation for the foreseeable future, so Odorizzi figures to take the ball Sunday in Detroit, where he'll look to be able to produce a longer outing.
Jun 16 2021Odorizzi allowed two hits and struck out three over four scoreless relief innings in Tuesday's 6-3 extra-inning win over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As planned, Odorizzi threw bulk relief for starter Lance McCullers, who was activated off the injured list Tuesday. The tandem start is expected to be a one-time event while McCullers builds up his stamina. Both pitchers will be part of a six-man rotation going forward for Houston, which entered a stretch of 20 games in 20 days Tuesday. McCullers is expected to start Sunday's series finale against the White Sox with Odorizzi penciled in Monday to kick off a road series in Baltimore.
Jun 13 2021Odorizzi will work behind Lance McCullers (shoulder) in a tandem start Tuesday against the Rangers, but Odorizzi is expected to be part of a six-man rotation thereafter, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chroniclereports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since McCullers won't be fully stretched out Tuesday in his return from the 10-day injured list, the Astros will call on Odorizzi to provide length out of the bullpen Tuesday. After that, Houston is planning to utilize a six-man rotation, which leaves Odorizzi in line to make his next start June 21 in Baltimore. Odorozzi has had a rough go of things in his first season in Houston, posting a 6.75 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 23:8 K:BB through his six outings spanning 21.1 innings.
Jun 9 2021Odorizzi (1-3) allowed three runs on three hits and a walk with six strikeouts in five innings. He earned the win Wednesday versus Boston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander got off to a shaky start by allowing two runs in the first inning. Odorizzi allowed only one more hit after that, a solo home run by Xander Bogaerts in the fourth. Houston was able to maintain its lead thanks to four innings of one-hit ball out of the bullpen from Cristian Javier. Odorizzi hasn't found much success on the mound with a 6.75 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 23:8 K:BB across 21.1 innings this season. Wednesday was just the second time in six starts the 31-year-old was able to complete five innings. He lines up to face Texas next week, although it's unclear if he'll stay in the rotation once Lance McCullers (shoulder) returns.
Jun 3 2021Odorizzi (0-3) was charged with the loss against the Red Sox on Thursday after allowing three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out two across three innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a strong return to the rotation following a month-long absence due to a right forearm strain, Odorizzi struggled with command Thursday, needing 72 pitches to make it through three innings. It could have gone worse, as all of his damage came from a three-run homer by Christian Arroyo in the second frame, but it was enough to give the Red Sox the lead for good. The 31-year-old has now failed to pitch five full innings in four of his five starts and just doesn't seem to have it this year. The shaky outing puts Odorizzi's season stats at a 7.16 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. He'll look to turn things around during his next projected start in a road rematch with Boston on Wednesday.
May 29 2021Odorizzi did not factor in the decision against San Diego on Saturday despite allowing only one run over 5.1 innings. He allowed three hits and one walk while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran missed over a month due to a right forearm strain, but he returned in style by posting easily his best start of the season. Odorizzi got through five scoreless frames but was pulled after giving up a pair of singles and notching only one out in the sixth frame, and one of the baserunners he left subsequently came around to score. Prior to Saturday, the right-hander had failed to pitch five full innings in any of his four starts, and he still holds an unpleasant 6.75 ERA overall this season. Odorizzi is tentatively scheduled to next face Boston at home Thursday.
May 26 2021The Astros plan to activate Odorizzi (forearm) from the 10-day injured list and have him start Saturday's game against the Padres, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Houston's rotation is inching closer to full health; in addition to Odorizzi, Framber Valdez (finger) will be activated from the IL to start Friday's series opener against San Diego, while Jose Urquidy (shoulder) looks poised to return from the IL to start Monday against the Red Sox. Meanwhile, Lance McCullers was placed on the IL on Wednesday with a sore shoulder, though manager Dusty Baker suggested that the right-hander would likely miss a short period of time. Odorizzi's spot in the rotation should be secure at least until McCullers is reinstated, but the former may need to deliver better results than he showed prior to being shut down with the strained forearm to ensure he stays in the rotation throughout the season. After a delayed start to the season due to signing with Houston until early March, Odorizzi posted a 10.13 ERA and 1.62 WHIP over three short starts before landing on the IL with the arm issue.
May 24 2021Odorizzi (forearm) will make his second rehab start for Triple-A Sugar Land on Monday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A rainout Saturday scuttled the Skeeters' rotation plans for the weekend. Framber Valdez (finger), who is also on a rehab assignment, had his start moved from Saturday to Sunday, while Odorizzi will throw the first game of a doubleheader Monday. He's expected to throw between 75 and 80 pitches during the start, which could be his final one before rejoining the major-league club.
May 23 2021Odorizzi (forearm) is scheduled to throw between 75 and 80 pitches in Sunday's rehab start for Triple-A Sugar Land, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Both Odorizzi and Framber Valdez (finger) were scheduled to throw for the Skeeters this weekend, but Valdez's start Saturday was wiped out due to weather, which leaves Sunday's rotation plans uncertain. Saturday's postponed game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Monday, so both pitchers should get their work in over the next two days. Odorizzi previously said he'd need just two rehab starts, but an exact timeline has not yet been established. He threw 57 pitches during his first rehab outing last week.
May 19 2021Odorizzi (forearm) will make his next rehab appearance Sunday with Triple-A Sugar Land, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The exact timeline for Odorizzi's return to Houston is unclear, but his third rehab start with the Triple-A squad will be the next step toward the righty's activation from the injured list. Odorizzi struggled considerably in his first two MLB starts of 2021 before suffering the forearm strain in his third outing, though he will still likely slot in as a back-of-the-rotation starter for the Astros once healthy.
May 16 2021Odorizzi (forearm) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sugar Land on Monday, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After completing a 35-pitch live batting practice session Wednesday, Odorizzi is ready to return to game action. It's not clear how many pitches he will throw against Round Rock on Monday. Regardless, if he makes it through unscathed, Odorizzi could theoretically return as soon as next weekend to take the spot vacated by Jose Urquidy (shoulder). Kent Emanuel would be another candidate for that opening, if the Astros feel they don't want to rush things with Odorizzi.
May 12 2021Odorizzi (forearm) looked good while throwing 35 pitches in live batting practice Wednesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Following his successful throwing session Wednesday, Odorizzi is expected to start for Triple-A Sugar Land in the near future as part of a rehab assignment. Odorizzi said that he'll need at least two starts in the minors, and his first appearance with Triple-A Sugar Land should be Monday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. Given that timeline, fantasy managers shouldn't expect Odorizzi to be activated from the 10-day injured list until the final week of May at the earliest.
May 11 2021Odorizzi (forearm) will face live batters Wednesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi recently threw a 37-pitch bullpen session over the weekend and is progressing toward a return to Houston's starting rotation. If all goes well, a rehab assignment at Triple-A Sugarland would be the next step. The club may want him to make a couple of starts in the minors, putting him on a path to return late May. In the meantime, Luis Garcia will take Odorizzi's turns in the rotation.
May 9 2021Manager Dusty Baker said Sunday that Odorizzi (forearm) is on track to throw a live batting practice session within the next two days, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports. "Everything's tentative so now we got to build him back up," Baker said of Odorizzi. "He had a good [bullpen] session [Saturday], he'll probably throw to some hitters in a couple days and hopefully he'll go out on assignment. He came in a little behind already so we want to build him up this time and make sure he's ready to give us some length and won't go backwards." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi is ready to move on to the next phase of his rehab program after he threw two sets of about 20 pitches apiece in an extended bullpen session Saturday. After he steps in to face hitters early this week, Odorizzi could be cleared for a rehab assignment at Triple-A Sugar Land over the weekend. Odorizzi, who is working back from a right pronator muscle strain, may need one or two outings in the minors before Houston is comfortable reinserting him into the big-league rotation.
May 6 2021Odorizzi (forearm) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Wednesday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi hit the injured list in late April but was never shut down for an extended period. He's still being treated cautiously, however, as he's expected to throw another bullpen session before heading out on a rehab assignment, where he could wind up making more than one start. That could potentially push his return date to late May.
May 5 2021Astros general manager James Click said Wednesday that Odorizzi (forearm) is "trending toward maybe needing a rehab start or two" before being activated from the 10-day injured list, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After noting just a few days earlier that he believed Odorizzi would be ready to rejoin the Astros without requiring a rehab assignment beforehand, Click is now walking back those comments. Click reiterated that Odorizzi's forearm remains structurally sound, so the Astros are seemingly just taking some extra caution by plotting out a minor-league assignment for the veteran right-hander. Luis Garcia -- who is scheduled to start Wednesday against the Yankees -- looks like he'll be able to make at least one more turn through the rotation after that before Odorizzi rejoins the mix.
May 3 2021Houston general manager James Click does not expect Odorizzi (right pronator muscle) to require a minor-league rehabilitation assignment, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi threw off flat ground Sunday and is eligible to come off the injured list Thursday. Presuming he throws off a mound before then, Odorizzi could be ready to start when his rotation spot comes due Monday, May 10, against the Angels.
May 1 2021Odorizzi (forearm) resumed throwing Thursday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Dusty Baker said Saturday that Odorizzi is progressing well in his recovery, and the right-hander is slated to throw off flat ground Saturday and Sunday. Odorizzi is expected to miss 2-to-3 starts due to a right pronator muscle strain, but he appears to be trending in the right direction.
Apr 27 2021Odorizzi is expected to miss 2-to-3 starts after being cleared of any structural damage in his right forearm Tuesday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 31-year-old was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right pronator muscle strain after exiting Saturday's start against the Angels, but he's not expected to face a lengthy absence. Odorizzi could rejoin the rotation during the second week of May if his recovery progresses as expected.
Apr 26 2021Odorizzi was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right pronator muscle strain Monday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi exited Saturday's start against the Angels with a forearm issue, and he's slated to miss two turns through the rotation while he recovers. However, the Astros are optimistic that Odorizzi's injury is a short-term issue. Right-hander Peter Solomon was called up in a corresponding move, but it's not yet clear who will fill in as a starter while Odorizzi is sidelined.
Apr 24 2021Odorizzi exited his Saturday start against the Angels due to right forearm tightness, Julia Morales of AT&T SportsNet Southwest reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi faced just one batter in Saturday's contest prior to his removal. It's not yet clear whether the injury will force the right-hander to miss any additional time, but Kent Emanuel replaced him in Saturday's game and could step in as a starter if Odorizzi is unable to make his next start.
Apr 18 2021Odorizzi (0-2) allowed four earned runs on three hits and three walks while striking out seven across 4.1 innings, taking the loss to the Mariners on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi cruised until he couldn't get himself out of the fifth inning Sunday. The 31-year-old has struggled in two appearances as an Astro with a 10.57 ERA in 7.2 innings. While teams have been hitting consistently against him, he still has a 13.75 K/9 rate. Odorizzi will look for his first win of the season in an upcoming start Friday against the Angels.
Apr 13 2021Odorizzi (0-1) allowed five earned runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out four across 3.1 innings in Tuesday's loss to the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi showed some fatigue as his start went on, which could be expected in his first start after signing late in the offseason. He worked through the first two innings with little trouble, allowing only one single. However, over the course of the next 1.1 frames, he surrendered three home runs before being pulled from the game. On the positive side, Odorizzi threw 80 pitches, so he appears to be relatively well stretched out for his next start, currently projected for Sunday at Seattle.
Apr 12 2021The Astros recalled Odorizzi from their alternate site ahead of his scheduled start Tuesday against the Tigers, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Because Odorizzi's start to the season was delayed due to conditioning reasons rather than an injury, the Astros optioned him to the alternate site rather than stashing him on the IL. With Odorizzi having now completed his buildup program, he'll be making his 2021 and Astros debut Tuesday, taking the rotation spot previously occupied by Cristian Javier. Astros manager Dusty Baker hasn't specified what restrictions Odorizzi might have in his debut, but fantasy managers shouldn't be surprised if he's capped at around 80-to-90 pitches.
Apr 10 2021Odorizzi (not injury related) is expected to start Tuesday's game against the Tigers, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 31-year-old made a start at the Astros' alternate training site last Thursday, and he's set to remain on schedule by making his season debut Tuesday versus Detroit. Odorizzi had a delayed build-up program in spring training after signing with Houston in early March, but it appears he'll end up missing less than the first two weeks of the regular season.
Apr 8 2021Odorozzi will make a start Thursday at the Astros' alternate site, facing off against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Due to signing with the Astros late in winter, Odorizzi was delayed in his build-up program compared to Houston's other starters during spring training, resulting in him being held off the Opening Day roster. As Jake Kaplan of The Athletic notes, Odorizzi will be fully stretched out for a starting duty following Thursday's game, so his next outing should come with Houston. He tentatively lines up to make his Astros debut April 13 or 14 versus the Tigers.
Mar 31 2021Odorizzi (conditioning) is unlikely to make his season and Astros debut until at least April 13 against the Tigers, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since he didn't sign his two-year, $17 million deal with the Astros until two weeks into spring training, Odorizzi is still playing catchup with his throwing progression and won't be included in the Astros' Opening Day rotation. Odorizzi was able to build up to three innings and 54 pitches in his final Grapefruit League outing Monday against Washington, but the Astros want him to complete two more live outings before activating him. He's tentatively scheduled to face hitters in simulated games Saturday and April 8, making April 13 his earliest possible debut date if the Astros keep him on a normal four-day rest schedule.
Mar 29 2021Odorizzi allowed one unearned run on three hits and one walk while striking out three over three innings in Monday's spring game against Washington. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi, who was signed by the Astros after spring training started, is behind other starters. He ran his pitch count to 54 on Monday and is focused on getting ready for Houston's home-opening series beginning April 8, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. The right-hander will work on the back fields in simulated games over the next week to 10 days build up for his season debut.
Mar 25 2021Odorizzi allowed seven runs on six hits and two walks while striking out one over one inning in Wednesday's spring game against Washington. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi made his spring debut, and it was ugly. He ceded four home runs and got just two outs in the first inning before being pulled. He went back out to start the second but retired one batter and gave up back-to-back homers. Odorizzi had been scheduled to throw three innings, according to Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle. The right-hander shook off the outing and will prepare for his next appearance. "Overall, (I'm) healthy, checked the box, got the pitch count up, and we'll move on to the next one," Odorizzi said. He was signed as a free agent to replace Framber Valdez (finger) in the rotation, but Odorizzi is not expected to be ready early in the season.
Mar 19 2021Odorizzi doesn't expect to be built up enough to take his first turn in the rotation but expects to be ready to debut during the Astros' first homestand, which runs from April 8-14, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi didn't sign with the Astros until March 6, giving him less than a month to get ready for Opening Day. That's not quite enough time, but he should be ready to go without missing more than one start. The Astros do have six games in six days to start the season, however, so they'll need to turn to a spot starter for one of those. If Odorizzi's prediction about his timeline is accurate, he'll make his Astros debut against the Athletics or Tigers.
Mar 13 2021Odorizzi likely won't be ready for Opening Day because he'll need more time to build up his pitch count, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi was recently signed after Framber Valdez suffered a broken left ring finger and has not yet pitched in a Grapefruit League game. He's expected to replace Valdez in the rotation, but if he's unavailable for a turn or two, Houston will need to turn to a diminishing stock of available starters. Cristian Javier hasn't pitched since May 2 and just returned from being in quarantine; it's a similar situation for Luis Garcia, who spent time in quarantine and has not yet pitched this spring. That could lead to early season starts for Brandon Bielak.
Mar 6 2021Odorizzi signed a two-year contract with the Astros on Saturday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi held out in free agency until he found the right deal, and he'll join Houston's rotation with Framber Valdez's (finger) status up in the air in 2021. The financial terms of the deal aren't yet known, but the contract includes a player option for 2023. The right-hander spent the past three seasons with the Twins but only made four starts in 2020 while battling various injuries. Odorizzi made 34 starts for Minnesota across the past two years and posted a 3.75 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 190:56 K:BB over 172.2 innings. Whether he has enough time to build up ahead of Opening Day remains to be seen.
Sep 29 2020Odorizzi (finger) is on the Twins' wild-card roster, Brandon Warne of Access Twins reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi battled multiple injuries throughout the season and went on to make just four starts, allowing 10 earned runs in 13.2 innings. He most recently missed time due to a blister but is evidently ready to pitch in some capacity now. He isn't listed as the expected starter for any of the three potential wild-card games, however, so he'll presumably be stuck in a relief role for the series.
Sep 22 2020Odorizzi (finger) has progressed well in his recovery and will likely be available for the postseason, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi landed on the injured list Friday with a right middle finger blister, but manager Rocco Baldelli sounded optimistic about his availability for the postseason. "He's healed well. His finger looks good. He's played catch. It's all gone fine," Baldelli said. The Twins are taking steps to avoid a setback in his recovery, but he'll likely be available for the team's wild-card series.
Sep 18 2020Odorizzi was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with a right middle finger blister, retroactive to Sept. 17, Brandon Warne of ZoneCoverage.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old returned from an abdominal issue Wednesday but left that start during the fourth inning due to the blister. Odorizzi will be eligible to return from the injured list for the regular-season finale Sept. 27, though it's unclear if he'll require additional time to recover. The Twins have scheduled off days Monday and Thursday and won't require a fifth starter in his absence before the playoffs.
Sep 16 2020Odorizzi left Wednesday's start in the fourth inning due to an issue with his finger, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It appeared to be a blister or finger nail issue that was bothering him and he was forced to leave in the middle of an at-bat. Odorizzi was pitching well by allowing just one run over 3.2 innings. It was his first start since returning from the IL after getting hit in the abdomen by a batted ball.
Sep 15 2020Odorizzi (abdoment) will be activated from the 10-day injured list to start Wednesday against the White Sox, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old has been sidelined since Aug. 21 when he took a liner off his chest, but he's ready to retake the mound Wednesday versus the top team with the best record in the AL. Odorizzi completed two simulated games and reached 81 pitches in the most recent outing, so he shouldn't face significant limitations in his first start off the injured list.
Sep 14 2020Odorizzi (abdomen) is expected to return from the 10-day injured list to start Wednesday's game against the White Sox, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Out since Aug. 21 after taking a line drive off the chest in a start versus the Royals, Odorizzi looks ready to go after completing two simulated outings at the Twins' alternate training site in St. Paul. Considering he tossed 81 pitches in his most recent sim game, Odorizzi looks to be relatively built up for a starter's workload as he prepares for a return. Odorizzi has been limited to just three starts for Minnesota this season, as he opened the abbreviated campaign on the IL due to a strained intercostal muscle.
Sep 11 2020Odorizzi (abdomen) pitched in a intrasquad game on Friday and could return from the injured list next week, manager Rocco Baldelli told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It sounds like Odorizzi is ready to return from the injured list as this was his third rehab outing, but the Twins don't have an immediate opening in the rotation with five healthy starters pitching well. Odorizzi could also use some extended time to build back arm strength since he's only made three starts this season. It's not clear when Odorizzi will return as a result.
Sep 8 2020Odorizzi (abdomen) will make another rehab appearance at Minnesota's alternative training site in St. Paul before returning, manager Rocco Baldelli told The Athletic. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi threw about 60 pitches in a rehab outing on Saturday in St. Paul. Baldelli said Odorizzi would return in mid-September, so the exact timing of his activation from the injured list is uncertain. The Twins may delay his return with five starters healthy and throwing well and since he may need some extended time to build back arm strength since he's only made three starts this season after beginning the season on the injured list due to a back injury. Odorizzi suffered an abdominal bruise after getting hit by a line drive in his Aug. 22 start and was subsequently placed on the injured list.
Sep 5 2020Odorizzi (abdomen) threw about 60 pitches at Minnesota's alternative training site in St. Paul on Saturday, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. "Physically, he came out in a very good place. That was encouraging," manager Rocco Baldelli said. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Baldelli mentioned that Odorizzi will have another throwing session before the Twins decide on any timetable for his return. Odorizzi suffered an abdominal bruise after getting hit by a line drive in his Aug. 22 start and was placed on the injured list
Aug 29 2020Odorizzi (abdomen) will throw a bullpen session when the Twins return to Target Field on Monday, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi suffered an abdominal bruise after getting hit by a line drive in his Aug. 22 start and was placed on the IL. He was too sore to throw the past few days, but it sounds like he's making progress. However, he may need some extended time to build back arm strength since he's only made three starts this season after beginning the season on the injured list due to a back injury.
Aug 22 2020Odorizzi (abdomen) was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi was hit in the chest by a line drive that forced him out of Friday's start early, and he'll miss additional time as a result of the injury. It's unclear exactly how much time he'll have to spend on the injured list. The right-hander sputtered out of the gates to begin the season as he carries an 8.10 ERA over 10 innings during his first three starts, albeit with a strong 9:2 K:BB. Sean Poppen and Daniel Coulombe were added to the 28-man roster in corresponding moves.
Aug 21 2020Odorizzi was diagnosed with an abdomen contusion following Friday's loss to the Royals, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi labored through his start Friday, allowing five runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out one over three innings prior to being hit by a line drive. He was charged with the loss as a result of the performance. Odorizzi said that he had the wind knocked out of him after being hit, but whether he'll be forced to miss any additional time remains to be seen. The right-hander now carries an 8.10 ERA over 10 innings across his first three starts this year.
Aug 15 2020Odorizzi allowed two earned runs on three hits and no walks while striking out six across four innings in the first game of the team's doubleheader Saturday against the Royals. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi retired the first 11 batters he faced, six of them on punchouts. However, he was quickly pulled after allowing a single and home run to the first batters he faced in the fifth inning, leaving him short of qualifying for the win. Even so, it was a positive outing for Odorizzi, as he showed improved control in his second outing of the campaign. He'll look to work deeper into the game in his next outing, currently projected to come Thursday against Milwaukee.
Aug 14 2020Odorizzi will start Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Royals on Saturday after Friday's contest was postponed, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Friday's contest was postponed due to rain, but Odorizzi will still be ready to start to open the series against Kansas City. He'll take the mound for the first of the seven-inning contests Saturday with Jose Berrios starting Game 2. Odorizzi allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two over three innings in his season debut.
Aug 8 2020Odorizzi allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two over three innings in a no-decision against the Royals on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A limited pitch count was expected for Odorizzi after he missed the start of the season with a back issue, and he could only get nine outs on his 71 pitches. He gave up a homer to Jorge Soler in the third inning, so this was one to forget, but Odorizzi took a big leap last season and he's in a great situation with the Twins. The right-hander will look to go deeper into the game next week in a rematch against the Royals, this time in Minnesota.
Aug 6 2020Odorizzi (back) will come off the injured list to start Saturday's game at Kansas City, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He was expected to be on track for a weekend activation and it sounds like his latest side session went off without a hitch. The Twins haven't indicated how deep Odorizzi will be able to go in the outing, but he draws a strong fantasy matchup on paper for what will be his season debut.
Aug 3 2020Odorizzi (back) looked good after throwing Monday and is expected to start sometime during the Twins' weekend series in Kansas City, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi has been dealing with upper-back stiffness since mid-July, causing him to miss the early part of the season. He won't miss much more time, though it's not yet clear what kind of workload he'll be ready to handle in his first start of the year.
Jul 30 2020Odorizzi (back) threw a bullpen session Thursday, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi came out of the session pain-free and is tentatively scheduled to face live hitters early next week. A more concrete return date for the right-hander should hopefully come into focus following his live BP session next week.
Jul 30 2020The Twins don't have any specific plans for when Odorizzi (back) will return to the rotation, manager Rocco Baldelli told MLB.com. "He's been stretching things out again, playing catch, still feels good," Baldelli said. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi is set to throw a bullpen session in the next day or two, but the Twins didn't have specific details before Wednesday's game. While Baldelli says Odorizzi is improving, it doesn't sound like he'll return to face the Indians in the team's next four-game series.
Jul 26 2020Odorizzi (back) is scheduled to pitch against live hitters early this week, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old opened the season on the 10-day injured list after experiencing back stiffness last weekend, and he's eligible to return from the shelf Thursday. If all goes well Odorizzi could take the mound during the four-game set against Cleveland next weekend.
Jul 22 2020Odorizzi (back) will begin the season on the 10-day injured list, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old was lifted from his scheduled start in Sunday's intrasquad game due to mild back soreness, and he'll end up missing at least the first turn through the rotation. Odorizzi isn't expected to require a significant stay on the injured list and could join the rotation during the latter half of next week. The Twins have a scheduled off day Monday, so the team wouldn't require an additional starter if he can return next week.
Jul 19 2020Odorizzi was held out of Sunday's intrasquad game due to mild upper back stiffness, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi was able to play long toss Sunday, but the team will push him back at least one day while he deals with a minor back issue. Manager Rocco Baldelli didn't sound too concerned about the issue, but with Opening Day scheduled for Friday, it's unclear whether the right-hander will face any limitations to begin the year.
Jul 14 2020Odorizzi did not give up a run during a 79-pitch start in Tuesday's scrimmage, giving up five hits with five strikeouts, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi and Minnesota's starting pitchers drew rave reviews for their conditioning during the shut down of baseball, and he appears ready to go for Opening Day of the 60-game season. Odorizzi is coming off the best season of his career with 15 wins, a 3.51 ERA and career-best 27.1 percent strikeout rate.
Mar 20 2020Odorizzi only threw two innings during Grapefruit League play, but he honed his offspeed pitches and built up to 52 pitches on the backfields against minor-league hitters prior to the shutdown, LaVelle E. Neal of the Star Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi, who is coming off the best season of his career, likes to work on his pitches during spring training in a simulated game environment, where he is less focused on trying to get out of an inning. The Twins supported him in this approach, although he would have gotten into more Grapefruit League games had spring training continued. He was unwilling to shed any light on what exactly he was working on, although he said he really likes the shape of his offspeed pitches and values seeing how hitters react to those pitches in that informal environment -- few of the hitters were able to make contact.
Nov 14 2019Odorizzi will accept a qualifying offer from Minnesota, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi will sign a one-year, $17.8 million contract as a result. Odorizzi is coming off the best season of his career with 15 wins, a 3.51 ERA and career-best 27.1 percent strikeout rate. His return is a big boost to the Twins, who previously only had Jose Berrios set to return among their top four starters.
Nov 4 2019Odorizzi will receive a qualifying offer from the Twins, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Heading into his age-30 season, Odorizzi would presumably like to capitalize on his 3.51 ERA and career-best 27.1 percent strikeout rate with a multi-year deal. He's not at the elite level which makes rejecting the one-year, $17.8 million offer a no-brainer, but the Twins likely don't expect much more than draft-pick compensation from their offer. It's still conceivable that he takes the deal, however, especially if he's afraid of the adverse effect it will have on his market.
Oct 4 2019Odorizzi will start Game 3 of the ALDS against the Yankees on Monday, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi hasn't pitched since Sept. 24 against Detroit, so he'll be well-rested for Monday's matchup. He posted a 3.51 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with a 178:53 K:BB over 159 innings during the regular season but will face a tough New York lineup Monday.
Sep 28 2019Odorizzi is no longer scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He had been listed as the starter for the season finale earlier in the week, but the Twins will opt to rest their No. 2 starter in favor of giving Martin Perez the ball Sunday. Odorizzi dealt with a tight left hamstring in his last start, but it was a minor issue. He is expected to start Game 2 of the ALDS on Oct. 5.
Sep 27 2019Odorizzi (hamstring) is listed as Sunday's starter against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi left his last start with a tight left hamstring, but he was already at 93 pitches so it seemed like more of a precaution than a notable injury. This game won't mean anything for the Twins, so while it makes sense to keep Odorizzi on turn and pitching in a competitive setting, his workload will likely be managed carefully in the final game of the regular season. He will line up to start Game 2 of the ALDS (likely against the Yankees) on Oct. 5 on an extra day's rest.
Sep 24 2019Odorizzi left Tuesday's game against the Tigers with a tight left hamstring and is day-to-day, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He went out for the start of the seventh inning but injured himself warming up and left with the head trainer. Odorizzi gave up one run on two hits and one walk while striking out seven over six innings and left in line for the win. He was at 93 pitches so he might have been removed as a precaution. It is unclear if Odorizzi will be able to make his scheduled start on the final day of the season against the Royals.
Sep 19 2019Odorizzi (14-7) took the loss Wednesday, giving up two runs on seven hits and a walk over 5.2 innings while striking out nine as the Twins were downed 3-1 by the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander fell one out shy of his eighth quality start of the season, but a rare lack of run support handed Odorizzi just his second loss in his last nine trips to the mound. He'll carry a 3.59 ERA and 171:52 K:BB through 153 innings into his next outing Tuesday in Detroit.
Sep 18 2019Odorizzi is slated to start Wednesday's game against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi returns to the mound on his standard four days' rest, despite covering only two innings in his last appearance Friday against the Indians before thunderstorms in Cleveland resulted in the game's postponement. Since being blown up for a season-high nine runs July 24 versus the Yankees, Odorizzi has rebounded impressively. He's posted a 3.05 ERA and 54:15 K:BB in 44.1 innings over his last eight starts, racking up three more wins along the way.
Sep 13 2019Odorizzi won't make his scheduled start Friday against Cleveland after the game was postponed due to rain, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Saturday, so Odorizzi figures to take the mound in one of the two contests.
Sep 7 2019Odorizzi had 10 strikeouts and allowed two runs on four hits over 5.1 innings during Saturday's win over the Indians. He walked two and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Odorizzi kept Cleveland off the board until the sixth inning when a pair of walks came around to score, one of which scored on a wild pitch after he exited the contest. The right-hander has a 3.05 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 54:15 K:BB over his last eight starts and lines up to face the Indians again Friday.
Sep 2 2019Odorizzi surrendered three runs on five hits while striking out seven over five innings Monday against the Tigers.

Jul 23 2018Odorizzi allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and one walk across six innings in a no-decision Sunday against the Royals. He struck out eight.Odorizzi limited baserunners to great effect in this one and was only scored upon as an error and a walk proceeded a two-run double from Alex Gordon in the fifth inning. He threw a solid 67 percent of his pitches for strikes, including 22 swinging strikes as he tied his third-best strikeout total of the season. Odorizzi was roughed up in his previous start, but he's allowed two runs or fewer in four of his last five to bring his ERA to a still disappointing 4.37 for the year. He'll look to improve that figure this weekend against the Red Sox.
Jul 14 2018Odorizzi didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 11-8 win over the Rays after getting tagged with six runs (five earned) on eight hits and a walk over 4.1 innings while striking out three.Things didn't go well for the right-hander in his first career start against his former club, but the Twins' offense was able to keep Odorizzi from taking his seventh loss of the year. He'll carry a 4.54 ERA into the All-Star break.
Jul 8 2018Odorizzi (4-6) allowed five hits and one walk while striking out five across six innings to earn the win Sunday against the Orioles.Odorizzi was effective Sunday, highlighted by surrendering no home runs and handing out only one free pass. He now has two scoreless outings in his last three starts, and while both of those starts have come against weak lineups -- the White Sox and Orioles -- Odorizzi is making up for a rough stretch in late May and June during which he allowed 22 earned runs in 20.1 innings. That stretch inflated his ratio stats, but he has gone at least five innings without surrendering more than two earned runs in 10 of his 19 starts this season.
Jul 3 2018Odorizzi (3-6) took the loss against the Brewers on Tuesday, allowing two runs on four hits across five innings. He recorded nine strikeouts and issued four walks.Eric Thames brought home the only two runs of the game with a two-run blast during the fifth inning, saddling Odorizzi with the loss as the Twins bats remained dormant. The right-hander pitched well but again struggled with control with the four free passes and throwing 109 pitches, and has now issued 16 walks over his last 21.2 innings. The 28-year-old has a 4.57 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 18 starts this season, and is slated for a quality matchup against the Orioles on Sunday.
Jun 28 2018Odorizzi threw six shutout innings Thursday, allowing just three hits and three walks in a 2-1 win over the White Sox. He struck out eight batters in the no-decision.After not making it out of the second inning in his last outing, this was a much-needed turnaround for Odorizzi. Minnesota couldn't get the bats going, providing just one run before heading to extras. The 28-year-old right-hander lowered his season ERA to 4.62 in 85.2 innings with 88 strikeouts and 39 walks. He'll take the mound next Tuesday in Milwaukee.
Jun 23 2018Odorizzi fell to 3-5 on the season with a poor performance Saturday against the Rangers. He lasted just 1.2 innings and allowed six runs on six hits and a walk, striking out three.Odorizzi started strong, retiring the side in order in the first inning, but the wheels came off in the second. He faced ten batters in the frame but couldn't get three outs and was pulled in favor of Matt Magill after allowing six runs. He's now allowed 22 earned runs in 20.1 innings over his last five starts, dropping his season ERA to a disappointing 4.97. The righty will try to get back on track Thursday against the White Sox.
Jun 17 2018Odorizzi (3-4) allowed four runs on six hits and four walks while fanning five across five innings Sunday as he took the loss against Cleveland.Odorizzi surrendered a run in the second off a Tyler Naquin RBI single, followed by three runs in the third to put the Indians ahead, 4-1. Odorizzi has been decent of late, allowing two runs across five innings June 12 against Detroit and three runs across five innings June 6 against the White Sox, but he hasn't garnered enough run support to pick up a win since May 8. Through 15 starts this season, he sits with a 4.38 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 77:35 K:BB over 78 innings.
Jun 12 2018Odorizzi did not factor in the decison during Tuesday's win over the Tigers, allowing two runs on four hits over five innings. He stuck out four and issued four walks. After issuing two walks or less in his previous eight starts, Odorizzi didn't have his best command Tuesday, issuing the four free passes. The 28-year-old battled through five innings and now has a 4.19 ERA and 1.37 WHIP with 72 strikeouts across 73 innings this season, and is next slated to start Sunday at Cleveland.
Jun 6 2018Odorizzi (3-3) allowed three runs on six hits and a walk with seven strikeouts through five innings in a loss Wednesday against the Twins.Odorizzi was nasty through five innings, as he had held the White Sox to just one run and induced 14 swinging strikes en route to his fifth start of the season with at least seven strikeouts. But Odorizzi opened the sixth by allowing consecutive singles, the latter an infield single by Jose Abreu. That poor luck combined with a horrid relief appearance by Ryan Pressly, who allowed two singles, an RBI squeeze bunt and a wild pitch before completing the inning, left Odorizzi as the loser despite the excellent beginning to his night. Odorizzi will take a 4.24 ERA into his next appearance Tuesday against Detroit.
May 31 2018Odorizzi was lit up in a no-decision on Thursday, giving up eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits, striking out three and walking two as the Twins eventually fell 9-8 to the Indians.Odorizzi had been on a nice run coming into this contest with just five earned runs allowed in his 27.1 innings in May, but he wasn't able to contain Cleveland's offense from the get-go in this one, as the Indians were able to get to him for three-first inning runs, and eventually chase him after eight runs and 92 pitches. The rough outing bumped his ERA up from 3.34 to 4.29 over 63 innings, which looks more like the 4.14 mark he posted last season in 143.1 innings as a member of the Rays. He'll look to bounce back the next time he takes the mound in a start against a weak-hitting White Sox team next Wednesday.
May 20 2018Odorizzi allowed one earned run on five hits while walking two and striking out 10 across 5.2 innings Sunday against the Brewers. He did not factor into the decision.Odorizzi generated an impressive 17 swinging strikes to aid him in recording his best strikeout total of the season. He has been on an impressive three-start stretch, allowing only two earned runs in his last 16.2 innings pitched. However, he has yet to correct a home run problem -- he is allowing 1.67 HR/9 -- that could come back to haunt him as the season goes on.
May 15 2018Odorizzi took a no-decision Monday against Seattle despite throwing six shutout innings with seven strikeouts and allowing just four hits and a walk.Odorizzi was matched inning-for-inning by his opposite starter, Wade LeBlanc, but this was still one of his best starts of the season. He has been sharp this season, with a 3.35 ERA, but this marks just the fourth time Odorizzi has managed to complete the sixth inning. The seven strikeouts wound up just one shy of a season high as Odorizzi's fastball was electric, inducing seven swinging strikes in 60 offerings and setting up his fastball and splitter beautifully. He'll look to complete his two-start week on a high note Sunday against Milwaukee.
May 8 2018Odorizzi (3-2) struck out three, and allowed one earned run on two hits and two walks across five innings to earn the win against the Cardinals on Tuesday.Odorizzi's only blemish on the afternoon was a first-inning home run given up to Jose Martinez. The 28-year-old now has a 3.83 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with 38 stikeouts and 20 walks over 42.1 innings this season, and is next slated to start Monday against the Mariners.
May 3 2018Odorizzi got a no-decision in the Twins' 6-5 loss to the White Sox on Thursday, giving up five runs (three earned) on six hits over 5.1 innings, logging a season-high eight strikeouts and walking two.Coming off a strong start in a win against the Reds, Odorizzi came out of this one with a solid final stat line as a couple of errors by his defense meant that two of the five runs he gave up were unearned. He's now got a 4.10 ERA and a 1.39 ERA through 37.1 innings and while he's probably not going to post world-beating ratios, he's been getting just enough strikeouts and limiting enough damage to stay in the conversation as a streaming option - although he probably shouldn't be considered much more than that. He'll take the mound next in a road matchup against the Cardinals next Tuesday.
Apr 28 2018Odorizzi (2-2) allowed one run on five hits and two walks while striking out three over six innings in a win over the Reds on Saturday. The lone blemish came on a hanging first-pitch breaking ball, which Scott Schebler deposited in the right-field seats. Otherwise Odorizzi was strong, inducing 11 swinging strikes and a slew of weak popups on 91 pitches. He's a heavy flyball pitcher and more flyballs will leave the yard against better lineups -- the Yankees and Indians combined for five homers in 9.2 innings against Odorizzi his last two times out -- but the 28-year-old has appeal as a streamer in certain matchups. Next up: the White Sox in Chicago next week.
Apr 23 2018Odorizzi (1-2) allowed five runs on five hits and three walks across 4.2 innings while taking the loss Monday against the Yankees. He struck out five.Odorozzi allowed three runs during a first-inning rally before allowing solo home runs in the second and the fifth to round out the damage against his ledger. He continuously squandered favorable counts, throwing just 56 percent of his pitches for strikes despite getting ahead on 14 of 22 batters faced. Odorizzi put together two quality starts in his first three, but he's struggled since then and now owns a 4.50 ERA. He'll look to get back on track this weekend against the Reds.
Apr 18 2018Odorizzi went five innings in the loss to Cleveland on Tuesday, allowing four runs on six hits while delivering six strikeouts and one walk.Odorizzi allowed six hits in five innings, all of them for extra bases. He gave up three doubles and three homers, including back-to-back solo shots from Jose Ramirez and Michael Brantley to open the sixth, which subsequently ended his night. He hadn't allowed a hit through the first two innings, and didn't give up a run through four, but that ended with a two-run blast from Francisco Lindor in the fifth. Odorizzi is now 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 21.1 innings for his new club. With the off day Thursday, Odorizzi may be in line to face his former team in Tampa for his next outing.
Apr 15 2018Odorizzi will start Tuesday against the Indians in Puerto Rico.Odorizzi had been in line to start in one of the Twins' three games with the White Sox over the weekend, but all three contests were postponed after inclement weather hit Minneapolis. With conditions expected to be much more favorable Tuesday, Odorizzi shouldn't be in much jeopardy of having another start pushed back, and will have the benefit of pitching on six days' rest. Assuming the Twins experience no further postponements during the upcoming week, Odorizzi would line up for a second start April 22 in Tampa Bay.
Apr 10 2018Odorizzi (1-0) allowed one earned run on five hits while walking five and striking out four across six innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Astros.Odorizzi allowed 10 baserunners but managed to dance out of danger and surrender only earned run. After allowing two extra-base hits over 4.1 innings in his last start against the Pirates, he managed to keep the Astros from recording any Tuesday. While his season opening start remains his most impressive, allowing only one earned run to the dangerous Astros lineup has to be considered encouraging.
Apr 4 2018Odorizzi allowed three runs on five hits and three walks with two strikeouts over 4.1 innings in a no-decision Wednesday against Pittsburgh.Odorizzi just couldn't get his footing, as he threw just 12 first pitch strikes to 21 hitters and just 48 strikes out of 87 total pitches. Things could have been much worse had his bullpen and defense not bailed him out, as the Twinss stranded a runner on the bases and threw another one out following Odorizzi's fifth inning exit. Still, on the strength of his brilliant opening start, Odorizzi owns a 2.61 ERA.
Mar 29 2018Odorizzi allowed two hits and two walks across six scoreless innings in a no-decision against the Orioles on Thursday. He struck out seven batters. It was an impressive debut for Odorizzi, though he was ultimately stuck with a no-decision as Dylan Bundy dealt seven scoreless for the Orioles. The 28-year-old was able to keep the contact light, allowing just two singles, which is encouraging given his home run issues from 2017 (he conceded at least one home run in 17 of his first 18 starts). Odorizzi's tenure with the Twins is off to a solid start, and he'll look to keep things up when he toes the rubber in his next start, which is scheduled for Wednesday against the Pirates.
Mar 22 2018Odorizzi was named the Opening Day starter against the Orioles on Thursday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.Odorizzi will be followed by Kyle Gibson, Jose Berrios and Lance Lynn as the Twins revealed their plan for a four-man rotation to begin the season. In 2017 with Tampa Bay, he logged a 4.14 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with a 127:61 K:BB over 143.1 innings.
Mar 13 2018Odorizzi was bypassed for the start in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Orioles for maintenance purposes, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. The decision to hold out Odorizzi is twofold for the Twins, as it allows the team to insert the newly signed Lance Lynn into the pitching schedule while building in some rest for Odorizzi. The right-hander is set to throw a bullpen session Thursday before returning to Grapefruit League action against the Phillies on Sunday, when he's expected to cover around five innings or throw 75 pitches.
Mar 12 2018Odorizzi is scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Phillies, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.Initially, Odorizzi had been tabbed with starting Tuesday's Grapefruit League outing versus the Orioles. However, the club decided to use Lance Lynn on Tuesday instead, opting to have Odorizzi throw a bullpen session Thursday then start Sunday's game. So far this spring, Odorizzi has thrown 6.1 innings over two games, allowing just one run on three hits and a walk.
Feb 17 2018Odorizzi has been traded to Minnesota from Tampa Bay for shortstop Jermaine Palacios, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.Odorizzi will move into the Minnesota rotation and help stabilize the top of the rotation that's set to miss Ervin Santana for at least a month with a finger injury. It's a curious return for the Rays, who gain a prospect not seen in the top 20 in the Minnesota organization.
Feb 15 2018Odorizzi will make $6.35 million in 2018 after winning his arbitration case, Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times reports. The Rays came in at $6.05 million but will be forced to cough up some extra case after losing their arbitration battle with Odorizzi for a second-straight season. In 2017, the right-hander started 28 games, posting a 4.14 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with a 127:61 K:BB over 143.1 innings.
Sep 29 2017Odorizzi left Friday's start with right knee soreness. This was Odorizzi's final start of the season anyway, so unless it turns out he suffered a freak tear to a ligament or something of that nature, Odorizzi's offseason shouldn't be impacted by this injury. He tossed four shutout innings and allowed just two hits with a walk and four strikeouts to end the season. Odorizzi's final ERA will be 4.14, the first time he has finished with an ERA over 4.00 since 2014.
Sep 23 2017Odorizzi (10-8) allowed one unearned run on three hits and two walks while striking out nine to earn the victory Saturday against the Orioles.Odorizzi gave up a first-inning run, but silenced the Orioles' bats the rest of the way while Lucas Duda smashed a three-run homer to give him enough run support to win his tenth game of the year. He's allowed just three earned runs over four September starts to lower his ERA from 4.85 to 4.26, and he's been a strong fantasy option down the stretch. He'll make his next start Friday against the Orioles.
Sep 17 2017Odorizzi (9-8) tossed six innings of two-run ball to earn the win Sunday against the Red Sox, allowing one hit with two walks and six strikeouts.Odorizzi took a no-hitter into the sixth inning in this one, only to see Jackie Bradley ruin both that and the shutout with a two-run home run. He ran up his pitch count before finishing the frame and was not brought back out for the seventh, as his side turned over a newfound lead to the bullpen. Odorizzi has now allowed just three earned runs across 16.1 innings in his last three starts and will look to build off of this successful outing Saturday against the Ravens.
Sep 11 2017Odorizzi (8-8) allowed five runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks across 3.2 innings while taking the loss Monday against the Yankees. He struck out five.Odorizzi coasted through three innings before struggling in the fourth, when he allowed four runs on three hits, two walks, an error and a catcher's interference. Though his teammates' gaffs wiped four of the runs from his ledger, the team never mounted an offensive charge and doomed him to his eighth loss. Odorizzi was coming off of his best start in recent memory and will look to get back on track Sunday against the Red Sox.
Sep 5 2017Odorizzi (8-7) tossed 6.2 scoreless innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Twins, allowing one hit and one walk with six strikeouts.Odorizzi was terrific in this one and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, only to see it ruined by an infield single with one out. The right-hander struck out the next man he faced but was then lifted somewhat prematurely, with just 90 pitches under his belt. This stellar outing came at the right time for Odorizzi, who had allowed 13 runs across 12.1 innings over his last three starts. He will look to build off of this performance Sunday against the Red Sox.
Aug 30 2017Odorizzi (7-7) gave up three runs on four hits and three walks over five innings Wednesday, but that was enough for a win against the Royals. He struck out three.Considering the recent struggles of the Royals' offense -- which was shut out for four consecutive games before scoring six runs against the Rays on Tuesday -- this has to be considered a disappointing outing for Odorizzi, who threw 84 pitches and didn't even record a quality start despite coming away victorious. On the bright side, all of Kansas City's runs came on one swing: a three-run homer by Whit Merrifield in the third inning. Times have been tough for Odorizzi lately, as he didn't even finish the fourth inning in either of his two prior starts. In fact, his last 10 outings have seen the righty give up 34 runs in 48 innings -- that's a 6.38 ERA and less than five innings per start, which isn't exactly the stuff of fantasy championships.
Aug 25 2017Odorizzi allowed three runs on three hits and four walks despite four strikeouts over 3.2 innings but walked away with a no-decision Friday against the Cardinals.Odorizzi has now failed to complete four innings in consecutive starts and hasn't made it to the fifth in four of his last five. He is now 0-3 in that stretch with a 6.75 ERA and a 17:17 K:BB. Until he can find a way to fix his massive control problems, Odorizzi is going to remain in this funk.
Aug 19 2017Odorizzi (6-7) allowed seven runs on eight hits and five walks while striking out two over 3.2 innings to take the loss Saturday against the Mariners.Odorizzi gave up all seven of those runs after the second inning. Not only has he dropped three straight decisions this month, his ERA has risen from 4.47 to 4.74, making him a difficult player to trust in fantasy lineups. He'll make his next start Saturday against the Cardinals.
Aug 14 2017Odorizzi (6-6) allowed two runs on three hits and three walks across six innings in Monday's loss to the Blue Jays. He struck out four.Odorizzi, who yielded a two-run home run to Josh Donaldson in the first inning, cruised through the next five frames to a quality start. Unfortunately, the Rays bats couldn't solve Nick Tepesch on the other end, dropping Odorizzi to his sixth loss of the season. He dealt with a foot issue after being struck by a batted ball in his previous outing, but that did not appear to limit him in this one. Odorizzi will look to build off of this solid outing Saturday against the Mariners.
Aug 14 2017Odorizzi (foot) has been cleared to start Monday's game againt the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. It's expected to be the first of two starts during the week for Odorizzi, who will line up for another turn Saturday against the Mariners if he can make it through Monday's outing unscathed. After missing two starts due to a back issue, Odorizzi rejoined the rotation last week to start Aug. 9 against the Red Sox, but departed in the fifth inning after taking a liner off his right foot. Odorizzi was able to shake off the soreness and complete a bullpen session Friday without issue, so he's not expected to face any limitations in his return to the mound.
Aug 11 2017Odorizzi (foot) was able to complete a bullpen session prior to Friday's game against the Indians, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi is expected to make his next start this upcoming week against the Blue Jays, and barring any unforeseen issues that stem from Friday's bullpen, the right-hander should be good to go moving forward. He was diagnosed with a foot contusion after leaving Wednesday's contest due to a Eduardo Nunez line drive, which marked the second straight contest, and third in four starts, that Odorizzi hasn't lasted past the fifth inning. There will likely be confirmation within the next couple days on Odorizzi's projected start.
Aug 10 2017Odorizzi (foot) said he felt "really good" Thursday and doesn't expect to miss his next turn in the rotation, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. This is encouraging news, as it initially looked like Odorizzi might be sidelined for a good chunk of time after taking a liner off his ankle Wednesday night. He's scheduled to throw a bullpen session Friday to test out his ankle, and barring any setbacks, it looks like he should be ready to make his next scheduled start against the Blue Jays on Monday.
Aug 9 2017Odorizzi (back) was activated from the 10-day disabled list ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Red Sox.He'll indirectly assume the rotation spot for Alex Cobb, who was moved to the 10-day disabled list earlier this week due to a case of turf toe. Odorizzi only missed two starts due to the back issue and came out of his Aug. 4 rehab start at High-A Charlotte without issue, so he shouldn't face any restrictions in his return to the mound. However, those who own the right-hander in shallower formats may want to steer clear of activating him right away, given the difficult matchup he'll have on tap Wednesday.
Aug 9 2017Odorizzi was removed from Wednesday's game against the Red Sox due to a right foot contusion, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi looked to be in serious pain and was unable to put weight on his foot after getting pegged by a liner from Eduardo Nunez, but initial X-rays seem to indicate he avoided a more serious injury. The Rays are currently listing him as day-to-day, but he'll be reevaluated Thursday, at which point there should be a better idea for how long he may be sidelined.
Aug 9 2017Odorizzi was removed from Wednesday's game in the fifth inning after taking a comebacker off his right foot, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports. While the severity of the injury is unclear at this point, it didn't look good for the 27-year-old; he went down in a heap and was unable to put weight on his foot while being helped off the field by a trainer. This is an extremely tough break for Odorizzi, who was just activated from the DL in order to start Wednesday's contest. More should be known about his status following the conclusion of the game, though it wouldn't be surprising if he was forced back onto the disabled list.
Aug 6 2017Odorizzi (back) emerged without setbacks from his Friday rehab start with High-A Charlotte and manager Kevin Cash has announced he'll start Wednesday's game against the Red Sox, Bill Chastain of MLB.com reports. "I'm ready to go," Odorizzi said. "I will be back in there next time my spot comes up, so no more rehab starts."The right-hander told Cash that he hadn't felt as good in quite a while, validating the decision to run him out against Boston in what will be the middle contest of the three-game series at Tropicana Field. Odorizzi has compiled a 6-4 record in 18 starts this season, along with a 4.47 ERA that serves as the highest he's generated in his Rays career.
Aug 4 2017Odorizzi (back) racked up six strikeouts and surrendered two earned runs three hits over three innings in High-A Charlotte's loss to Dunedin on Friday, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi missed plenty of bats and looked solid overall while firing 54 pitches, 36 of which he got into the strike zone. Assuming the right-hander doesn't experience any setbacks, he's expected to return for the Rays' series against the Red Sox that kicks off next Tuesday.
Aug 3 2017Odorizzi (back) is scheduled to make a rehab start for High-A Charlotte on Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi was able to get through a bullpen session with no issues Wednesday, clearing the way for him to head out on what is assumed to be a brief rehab assignment. Manager Kevin Cash said the righty appears to be on track to return next week, so this could be his only rehab appearance before rejoining the Rays' rotation if all goes well.
Aug 2 2017Manager Kevin Cash said Odorizzi (back) appears to be on track to return next week, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Apparently everything went well during his bullpen session Wednesday, and it appears Odorizzi will indeed be back with the big club after just a brief stay on the 10-day DL. An exact return date should start to materialize as he continues to ramp up his activities in the coming days.
Jul 31 2017Odorizzi (back) played catch at Tropicana Field on Tuesday and is expected to throw off the mound Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The right-hander appears to be on track to make good on his assertion that he wouldn't miss an extended amount of time. Odorizzi's lower back issue has apparently been a recurring one dating back to spring training, so it remains to be seen if his current disabled list stint will be enough to eliminate it altogether.
Jul 26 2017Odorizzi (back), who landed on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday, said he doesn't expect to miss more than two turns through the rotation, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi's lower-back injury has apparently been bothering him off and on since spring training, and though he wasn't forced to exit his most recent start Sunday prematurely, team trainers evidently determined that he could benefit from an extended break to allow him to heal up. The Rays have yet to name a replacement in the rotation for Odorizzi for Friday's series opener against the Yankees, but Austin Pruitt, who was mysteriously scratched from his start with Triple-A Durham on Tuesday, looks like he could be the leading candidate to fill in. The Rays will likely reassess Odorizzi's health in the next few days before determining if the right-hander will be able to take the hill for his following turn, which would likely fall August 2 against the Astros.
Jul 26 2017Odorizzi was placed on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday due to a lower-back strain, Steve Carney of Sports Radio 620 WDAE reports.Odorizzi lasted just four innings in his most recent start Sunday against the Rangers, but it was believed that his early departure had more to do with a high pitch count than any sort of injury. Evidently, the right-hander was in fact hurting, so he'll be shuttled to the DL for the third time this season. Odorizzi was in line to make his next start Friday against the Yankees, but the Rays will now be forced to turn to either long reliever Erasmo Ramirez or one of their starters in the minor-league ranks to fill Odorizzi's spot in the rotation.
Jul 23 2017Odorizzi allowed three runs on four hits and three walks across four innings in a no-decision Sunday against the Rangers. He struck out five.Odorizzi gave up a sacrifice fly and a solo home run in the second inning, but he settled down and appeared to have regained control after four frames. He ran into trouble in the fifth, however, yielding a solo shot to Joey Gallo to lead off the inning before walking two consecutive batters and receiving an early hook. Overall it was an underwhelming performance for the right-hander, who continued to struggle with the long ball and threw just 58 percent of his pitches for strikes. His ERA now sits at 4.47 for the season and he will look to get back on track Friday against the Yankees.
Jul 22 2017Odorizzi, who'll start Sunday's series finale versus the Rangers, plans to continue throwing from the stretch exclusively for the time being, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The decision comes as a result of the success the right-hander encountered in a 3-2 win over the Athletics last Monday, one in which he fired seven innings of one-hit ball. According to Odorizzi, the fact that the stretch forces him to limit his movements prior to the pitch led to across-the-board improvements in his performance. While some pitchers feel they lose power when pitching out of the stretch, Odorizzi's repertoire isn't overly reliant on his fastball, which clocks in just over 90 mph on average.
Jul 17 2017Odorizzi (6-4) allowed one run on just one hit and two walks over seven innings in Monday's win over the Athletics. He struck out five.In what was his best performance of the season, Odorizzi's sole mistake came on a fourth inning home run by Khris Davis. It was an encouraging bounce-back performance by the 27-year-old, who had given up seven runs over 4.1 innings last time out against the Red Sox. The veteran hurler will look replicate his success during his upcoming scheduled start Sunday against the Rangers.
Jul 7 2017Osorizzi (5-4) coughed up seven runs on eight hits and three walks over 4.1 innings in Friday's 8-3 loss to the Red Sox. He struck out five. The right-hander remains mired in a rut, allowing at least three runs in seven straight starts with a 6.69 ERA, 1.66 WHIP, 31:16 K:BB and 2.8 HR/9 in 35 innings over that stretch. Odorizzi will take a 4.63 ERA into the second half, with his next start coming next Friday on the road against the Angels.
Jul 1 2017Odorizzi (5-3) allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three over five innings to earn the win Saturday against the Orioles.Odorizzi was provided 10 runs of support and easily cruised to a victory while burning through 111 pitches in just five innings. He's given up exactly three earned runs in five of his last six outings, and his 4.08 ERA make him a somewhat consistent, if unspectacular fantasy option. He'll make his next start Friday against the Red Sox.
Jun 28 2017Odorizzi was dealing with food poisoning in the days leading up to his most recent start Sunday against the Orioles, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Coming off one of his worst starts of the season when he gave up four runs in 5.1 innings, we now know the pitcher was on IVs in the days before that outing. The Rays' starter appears to have recovered from the illness and fantasy owners should expect to see his future starts closer to the 3.78 ERA he had prior to the poor showing we saw from him Sunday.
Jun 25 2017Odorizzi allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out five batters through 5.1 innings during Sunday's loss to Baltimore. He didn't factor into the decision. The long ball plagued Odorizzi again Sunday. He's now allowed eight homers through his past five starts and sports a worrisome 2.1 HR/9 for the year. His 4.00 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 7.8 K/9 have him on the fantasy radar, but it also isn't out of the question to be selective when using him going forward. Odorizzi projects to face Baltimore again in his next start.
Jun 19 2017Odorizzi allowed three runs on five hits and three walks across seven innings in a no-decision Monday against the Reds. He struck out four.Odorizzi comfortably cruised through the first four innings, but a solo home run by Scott Schebler in the fifth inning and a two-run shot from Scooter Gennett in the sixth left him behind on the scoreboard when he departed after the seventh. While he was bailed out by the offense, the right-hander could've easily attained a better result as he tried to bounce back from some recent struggles. That said, Odorizzi still delivered his second quality start in the last three outings and holds a respectable 3.78 ERA for the season. A partial contributor to his middling statistics this season is home run frequency -- he has allowed at least one long ball in 10 straight starts -- and he will look to keep the ball in the yard Saturday against the Orioles.
Jun 15 2017Odorizzi (4-3) gave up five runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out four over 4.1 innings but escaped with a no-decision in Wednesday's 7-6 loss to the Blue Jays.He threw only 55 of 99 pitches for strikes en route to issuing at least three free passes for the fourth time in his last five starts. Odorizzi's 3.77 ERA and 1.23 WHIP are right in line with his career numbers, but his 5.22 FIP suggests there could be more tough times ahead for the 27-year-old. He'll next take the mound Monday at home against the Reds.
Jun 12 2017Odorizzi will make his next start Wednesday against the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The right-hander was initially tabbed for Tuesday's contest, but with Jacob Faria getting called up to replace Matt Andriese (groin/hip) in the rotation, they'll bump Odorizzi back a day to accommodate the pitching prospect's arrival. This lines Odorizzi up to face southpaw Francisco Liriano in the finale, but most importantly, it likely takes him out of contention for a two-start week, although he could pick up a pair of starts next week as a result.
Jun 8 2017Odorizzi (4-3) pitched 6.2 innings of three-run ball, striking out eight and walking one, Thursday against the White Sox in a 7-5 win.Odorizzi had pitched five scoreless before A. Garcia's three-run blast in the sixth forced his exit. The right-hander had gone six innings or deeper in four consecutive starts in May before allowing five runs over his next to starts, which spanned a combined eight innings. Therefore, Thursday's performance was a positive sign for the 27-year-old.
Jun 3 2017Odorizzi (3-3) gave up eight runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks over 2.1 innings while striking out two in Friday's 12-4 loss to the Mariners.A first-inning error by Brad Miller kept most of the damage off Odorizzi's ledger, but this was still far from a strong effort. The right-hander has now served up at least one homer in seven straight starts, leading a to a career-worst 1.9 HR/9, and his 3.53 ERA looks to be on shaky ground next to his 5.38 FIP and 4.49 xFIP. He's in a good spot to rebound in his next start, however, at home against a White Sox squad that ranks 29th in wOBA against right-handed pitchers (.291).
May 27 2017Odorizzi (3-2) allowed two runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out four over 5.2 innings, but didn't factor into the decision Saturday against the Twins.Odorizzi put 11 runners on base, leading him to burn through 118 pitches in less than six innings. Despite the shaky outing, he's allowed two or fewer earned runs in all but two starts this season, and he's been a strong fantasy option with a 3.14 ERA. He'll make his next start Friday against the Mariners.
May 22 2017Odorizzi allowed just two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out eight batters over six innings during Monday's loss to the Angels. He didn't factor into the decision. The eight punchouts were a season high for Odorizzi, and Monday's outing continued his strong run of starts to open the campaign. He sports a rock-solid 3.14 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 7.7 K/9 and is closing in on establishing himself as a matchup-proof fantasy option. Odorizzi lines up next for a road start against the Twins this weekend.
May 16 2017Odorizzi (3-2) allowed four runs on seven hits and one walk across six innings in Tuesday's win over the Indians. He struck out five.Odorizzi cruised into the sixth inning with just one run on his ledger but saw that diminish after a Cleveland rally, which ended with a two-run home run by Edwin Encarnacion, brought three more around. He was able to finish out the frame, however, and wound up with an impressive win over one of the best teams in baseball. Despite missing a couple of weeks due to injury, Odorizzi has picked up right where he left off and now owns a tidy 3.16 ERA to go along with a tremendous 0.89 WHIP through 37 innings pitched. He seems to be truly emerging as a front-line pitcher in 2017 and will look to keep it going Monday against the Angels.
May 11 2017Odorizzi (2-2) allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out four batters over six innings during Thursday's loss to Kansas City. The 27-year-old righty was outdone by Jason Vargas on Thursday. Odorizzi has now allowed two runs or fewer through each of his past five appearances -- just six total over 25 innings -- and sports a high-end 2.61 ERA and 0.81 WHIP for the season. While his 7.0 K/9 and 21.3 strikeout percentage aren't standout marks, Odorizzi is in a nice groove and appears to be kick-starting a breakout campaign. He lines up for a tough road matchup against Cleveland in his next trip to the hill.
May 6 2017Odorizzi (2-1) allowed one run and three hits while striking out six across seven innings to earn the win Saturday against the Blue Jays.Odorizzi completely stifled the Blue Jays bats while getting plenty of run support on his way to his second victory of the season. He's now gone four straight starts without allowing more than a single earned run, and with a 2.88 ERA, he could be enjoying a breakout year in his sixth season. He'll make his next start Thursday against the Royals.
May 1 2017Odorizzi (hamstring) was activated from the 10-day disabled list and will start Monday's game against the Marlins.Odorizzi is set to make his first start since April 15 after a tight left hamstring sidelined him for two weeks. The right-hander didn't embark on a minor-league rehab assignment prior to his activation and only tossed a simulated game, but it's not expected that he'll face a pitch-count limit Monday. Erasmo Ramirez will move to the bullpen to accommodate Odorizzi's return to the rotation.
May 1 2017Odorizzi (hamstring) returned to the mound Monday against the Marlins, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and one walk across six innings en route to a no-decision. He struck out six.Odorizzi pitched well in his return from a strained hamstring, giving up just a sacrifice fly after an error in the first inning and a solo homer to Marcell Ozuna in the fourth. He was rather economical and needed just 78 pitches to make it through five frames, but his absence over the last couple of weeks without a rehab assignment caused his removal at that juncture, just before the Rays took the lead. Though he wasn't lucky enough to get the win, Odorizzi still lowered his ERA to 3.50 and will look to be on a regular workload in Sunday's start against the Blue Jays.
Apr 30 2017Odorizzi (hamstring) will be activated from the 10-day disabled list Monday and start later that evening against the Marlins, Marc Topkin of Tampa Bay Times reports. As expected, Odorizzi experienced no issues coming out of his simulated game a few days earlier, so the Rays have formally named his as their starter for Monday's series opener. He'll be officially activated from the DL in the hours leading up to his start, but fantasy owners who had been patiently awaiting his return can likely activate him with confidence. He'll be in store for a two-start week, with his second turn coming May 6 against the Blue Jays.
Apr 26 2017Odorizzi (hamstring) will return to the rotation Monday against the Marlins, the Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin reports.Wednesday's simulated game went well, which was the final test for Odorizzi before he returned to the rotation. He has a 4.15 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 8:3 K:BB in 13 innings this season. Look for him to be activated Monday morning in advance of the start.
Apr 25 2017Odorizzi (hamstring) will throw a simulated game Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. If Odorizzi's upcoming workout goes as planned, he'll be on track to return to action Monday. Prior to being placed on the disabled list, Odorizzi had pitched 13 innings over three games, during which he allowed six runs. He's struggled with the long ball in the early stages of the season, as he's given up three home runs over said games.
Apr 24 2017Odorizzi (hamstring) is scheduled to throw four innings of a simulated game Tuesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi is nearing a return to the Rays after tossing a 36-pitch bullpen Saturday without any issues. He'll get up and down four times in his next session to simulate a game and, if all goes well, it's looking like he could return to the lineup for next Monday's matchup against the Marlins.
Apr 22 2017Odorizzi (hamstring) threw a bullpen session and took part in some running drills Saturday, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports. It appears that Odorizzi cleared a major hurdle Saturday as he threw a 36-pitch bullpen without incident and his hamstring held up to the increased activity. Odorizzi is eligible to return from the disabled list Wednesday in Baltimore, which lines up with when Alex Cobb is set to start. If Odorizzi does come off the DL on Wednesday, he very well could be a candidate to start that night if Tampa opts to push Cobb back a day.
Apr 21 2017Odorizzi (hamstring) is expected to throw a bullpen session Saturday, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The right-hander seems to be progressing nicely after leaving his April 15 start with hamstring tightness. It's unclear when Odorizzi will be ready to face hitters again, but more details should emerge after he completes Saturday's session.
Apr 19 2017Odorizzi (hamstring) played catch on flat ground Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi left his start Saturday with hamstring tightness, and the Rays hope he misses just two starts. The 27-year-old allowed six runs in 13 innings over three starts to begin the season. Erasmo Ramirez will take his place in the rotation in the meantime.
Apr 15 2017Odorizzi left Saturday's game in the bottom of the second inning with an apparent injury, the Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin reports. He threw two practice pitches and was removed before facing a hitter in the second inning, getting replaced by Erasmo Ramirez. His status will be updated when the Rays specify the nature of the injury.
Apr 15 2017Odorizzi (hamstring) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Saturday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The right-hander exited Saturday's contest with hamstring tightness, and although an official diagnosis has not been disclosed, the issue is apparently bad enough to warrant a trip to the DL. Odorizzi will likely miss his next couple starts, so look for Erasmo Ramirez or recent callup Chase Whitley to make some spot starts while he's sidelined.
Apr 15 2017Odorizzi left Saturday's game with left hamstring tightness, 620 WDAE's Steve Carney reports. He seemed to grab his leg before exiting in the bottom of the second inning against the Red Sox, so this injury makes sense. Thankfully it is not an arm injury, but Odorizzi should still be considered questionable to make his next start. He gave up one hit in a scoreless first inning and was relieved by Erasmo Ramirez.
Apr 11 2017Odorizzi, who was hit in the leg by a line drive in Monday's loss to the Blue Jays, isn't concerned about it having any residual impact in his Sunday start versus the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. "It feels like a bruise," he said. "I don't think it'll be a big issue."Odorizzi had a ball mark on his left leg a day later but otherwise wasn't feeling any concerning degree of pain. The right-hander has gone six innings over each of his first two starts, generating a 4.50 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 8:3 K:BB.
Apr 9 2017Odorizzi (1-1) allowed just two runs on two hits and one walk across six innings of work in Sunday's win over the Blue Jays. He struck out four.Odorizzi the entirety of the damage against Odorizzi was done in the first inning on a homer from Josh Donaldson and an RBI groundout from Troy Tulowitzki, but he settled down beautifully afterward and did not allow another baserunner over his next five frames. He has allowed three home runs through his first two starts, bloating his ERA to 4.50 through 12 innings, but Sunday's outing should provide him some confidence heading into Saturday's matchup with the Red Sox.
Apr 4 2017Odorizzi (0-1) gave up four runs on seven hits, including two home runs, and two walks while striking out four over six innings in Tuesday's 5-0 loss to the Yankees. He was fairly sharp for the most part, throwing 76 of 107 pitches for strikes, but Odorizzi made two mistakes to Ronald Torreyes and Chase Headley, which was two mistakes too many on a night when he wasn't getting any run support. The 27-year-old coughed up a career-high 1.4 HR/9 last season so this wasn't the most encouraging start to his campaign, and he'll get another tough test Sunday at home against the Blue Jays.
Mar 31 2017Odorizzi gave up two earned runs on three hits and two walks over 3.1 innings in Thursday's Grapefruit League tie with the Twins.Odorizzi cruised through the first three innings before giving up a Byron Buxton double to lead off the fourth, which was promptly followed by a Joe Mauer opposite-field home run. The right-hander finished spring with a 4.91 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB over 11 innings across four starts and as per Bill Chastain of MLB.com, feels ready to face the Yankees on Tuesday at Tropicana Field. "Today's the best my arm has felt, most lively it's felt all spring," Odorizzi said. "So that's a good thing going into the season. I thought my fastball command was the best that it's been. So it's kind of a good cap to Spring Training."
Mar 21 2017Odorizzi fired 68 pitches over six innings in a Class A game against the Orioles on Monday, Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times reports. The right-hander struck out seven over his time on the mound, following a Tuesday spring start against the Yankees where he surrendered three earned runs on five hits over 3.2 innings. Odorizzi projects as the No. 2 starter in the coming season and outside of the aforementioned outing, he's been sharp over his other two starts. Prior to his encounter with the Yankees, the 26-year-old had given up just one earned run over his first two starts, and he owns a 9:2 K:BB over 7.7 innings thus far.
Mar 15 2017Odorizzi recorded four strikeouts and surrendered three earned runs on five hits and two walks over 3.2 innings in Tuesday's 10-6 Grapefruit League split-squad victory over the Yankees. On what was a particularly windy day, Odorizzi wasn't at his sharpest by any means, giving up a solo shot to Gary Sanchez in the first, along with an RBI double to Gleyber Torres and run-scoring single to Ronald Torreyes in the second. The fact that the Yankees are Odorizzi's first regular season opponent did admittedly cause him to pitch a bit differently than usual, as he deployed his cutter for the first time and also focused on his slider while minimizing the use of his fastball and changeup. "When you face a team twice and they happen to be your opening day opponent, you don't tend to show them a lot of your go-to stuff," he said. "I was more focused on offspeed and just kind of putting that in their head a little bit. So show it, and once it's the season everything is a little bit different. I got my work in, that's for sure."
Mar 8 2017Odorizzi recorded four strikeouts and gave up one earned run on five hits over two innings in Tuesday's 7-6 extra-inning Grapefruit League loss to the Yankees.Facing a Yankees lineup laden with several regulars that included catcher Gary Sanchez and first baseman Chris Carter, Odorizzi pitched to some contact but avoided the big hit. He surrendered a first-inning RBI single to Carter for his only run, and although he threw a total of 48 pitches, a lot of that was due to Odorizzi focusing on throwing his off-speed pitches. He remained around the strike zone for the duration of his outing, which also was partly responsible for the frequent contact, but he emerged pleased with the way he got other pitches besides his fastball to work to his advantage. "I got a lot of strikeouts on the change-up," Odorizzi said. "My slider is my big emphasis right now. I threw it quite a bit today. I got some takes, some swings and misses, so some encouraging results."
Mar 4 2017Odorizzi has been added to the World Baseball Classic reserve roster for Team USA, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The delegation means he could be available for rounds two or three if USA is available to advance. The young right-hander replaces Sunny Gray, who wasn't cleared for contract insurance. Odorizzi has emerged as a potential ace for Tampa Bay, posting a 3.69 ERA and 8.0 K/9 in 33 starts last season - his fifth in the league.
Mar 2 2017Odorizzi fired two perfect innings in Wednesday's 5-5 Grapefruit League tie with the Phillies.Odorizzi continued the encouraging pattern of strong performances from the Rays' projected starting rotation, retiring the Phillies on just 19 pitches over his pair of frames. The 26-year-old righty threw all of his pitches except for his cutter and was so efficient that needed an additional 11 pitches in the bullpen to reach his desired workload of 30. Odorizzi also had his first opportunity to work with impressive non-roster invitee Jesus Sucre, who's impressed thus far with his ability to manage the staff.
Feb 14 2017Odorizzi won his arbitration hearing Tuesday and will receive $4.1 million for the 2017 season, FanRag Sports' Jon Heyman reports. The Rays had proposed paying Odorizzi $3.825 million for the upcoming season, but the arbiter rewarded the right-hander's consistency since becoming a full-time member of the big league rotation. He has posted an ERA under 3.70 in each of the last two seasons, although his fielding independent numbers suggest he may regress slightly in 2017.
Dec 6 2016Odorizzi is reportedly the subject of the Pirates' interest at the MLB winter meetings, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi rebounded nicely from a 9-9 record in 2015 to post a 10-6 mark last season, even as his ERA saw a slight bump to a still-solid 3.69. The 26-year-old right-hander also logged a career-best 187.2 innings, but on the down side, gave up 29 homers, by far the most round-trippers he's surrendered over his five major league seasons. However, he turned the corner after the All-Star break following an uneven first half, going 7-1 with a 2.71 ERA over 83 frames. He therefore figures to bring back a decent return in a possible trade for the Rays, who are expected to move at least one starting pitcher this offseason.
Sep 26 2016Odorizzi (9-6) lasted only three innings Sunday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three, but came away with a no-decision in a 3-2 extra-inning loss to the Red Sox.He threw a whopping 84 pitches in his three innings before being relieved by Justin Marks. It's just the third time in his last 10 trips to the mound that Odorizzi hasn't been able to supply the Rays with a quality start, and he's posted a solid 3.52 ERA and 43:19 K:BB in 56.1 innings over that stretch. He'll get one more shot at win No. 10, but it won't come easy as he'll face the Rangers in Arlington on Saturday.
Sep 19 2016Odorizzi didn't factor into the decision Sunday versus the Orioles but gave up only an earned run on five hits over six innings. He struck out three. The right-hander certainly wasn't to blame, shutting down a potent Orioles lineup on the road over his 105 pitches, 71 of which he threw for strikes. His only hiccup was the 407-foot solo shot he surrendered to Manny Machado in the sixth, making it four straight starts that Odorizzi has given up at least one round-tripper. The outing Sunday represented the 26-year-old's sixth quality start in the last seven trips to the mound, a successful stretch he'll look to extend when he faces the Red Sox next Sunday.
Sep 13 2016Odorizzi pitched seven very strong innings, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out four Blue Jays in Monday's no-decision.Odorizzi bounced back from his worst start of the season by firing the eighth quality start of his 11 second-half outings. Aside from a blip on Sep. 6 versus Baltimore, Odorizzi hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in a game since the All-Star break. Over that stretch, the right-hander is 6-1 with a 2.78 ERA, .233 BAA and 54 strikeouts in 68 innings. He's been one of the league's top pitchers lately, but he'll draw Baltimore again in his next start Sunday.
Sep 6 2016Odorizzi (9-6) lasted just four innings Tuesday, allowing seven runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two and taking the loss against the Orioles.Odorizzi was doing fine until the fourth inning Tuesday, when he walked two, hit a batter, and gave up a pair of singles before surrendering a grand slam to Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado. Odorizzi had been the Rays most consistent pitcher lately, and had gone nine straight starts giving up three earned runs or fewer entering Tuesday. He still sports a 3.86 ERA and 1.23 WHIP, and will look to bounce back against the Yankees on Sunday.
Aug 30 2016Odorizzi threw six innings of three run ball on five hits and two walks Tuesday, striking out seven but earning a no-decision as the Rays rallied with a pair of homers late to win the game 4-3.Odorizzi was pitching a one-hit shutout until the fifth inning, when Hanley Ramirez laced a home run down the right field line. Odorizzi has been very strong in the second half so far, going 5-0 with a 2.09 ERA over his last seven starts. Tuesday's outing was quite solid when considering the Red Sox have scored the most runs in the AL, leading the second place Blue Jays by 68. Odorizzi will next face the Orioles at home on Monday.
Aug 25 2016Odorizzi (9-5) pitched seven innings, allowing one run on five hits and three walks while striking out four in Thursday's win over the Red Sox.Odorizzi got the better end of a pitcher's duel with Red Sox starter Drew Pomeranz to pick up his sixth straight victorious decision. Thursday marked the right-hander's seventh quality start in his last eight outings, a stretch in which he's posted a miniscule 1.40 ERA with 34 strikeouts over 45 innings. Odorizzi remains undefeated since the All-Star break and has pushed his ERA for the season down to 3.53, its best mark since June 8. The 26-year-old will look to continue his hot streak when he takes on the Red Sox once again, this time on the road, in his next start Tuesday.
Aug 21 2016Odorizzi gave up just an earned run on six hits and a walk over six innings in Saturday's 8-2 victory over the Rangers. He struck out four. The right-hander fired 65 of his 101 pitches for strikes, with his only mistake being the 385-foot solo shot he yielded to Roughned Odor in the fourth. Odorizzi has been solid over his last seven starts, with three consecutive scoreless outings during one stretch over that span, as well as six quality starts overall. He's rattled off five straight victories and will look to extend that streak against the Red Sox next Thursday.
Aug 14 2016Odorizzi (7-5) allowed three runs on five hits and a walk over six innings while striking out six to pick up the win Sunday in a 12-3 rout of the Yankees. The runs all scored on homers by Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez, but when you get that kind of run support you can afford to leave a couple of balls over the heart of the plate. Odorizzi's now won four straight decisions over six starts with a 1.66 ERA and 33:7 K:BB in 38 innings over that stretch, a stellar run that he'll try to keep going at home Saturday against the Rangers.
Aug 8 2016Odorizzi surrendered four runs in 5.1 innings in a no-decision on Monday against the Blue Jays. He gave up eight hits, walked three, and struck out four. The start broke a stretch of three straight shutout starts for Odorizzi. The righty has now allowed just six runs in five starts since the All-Star break. Odorizzi will carry a 3.82 ERA and 1.22 WHIP into his start Sunday against the Yankees.
Aug 3 2016Odorizzi (6-5) shut the Royals out for six innings Wednesday, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out six in a winning effort. That's three straight scoreless outings for Odorizzi, and he's lasted at least six frames every time. He's had a disappointing 2016, regressing instead of building on last year's numbers, but if Odorizzi can maintain the strong control he's shown lately and regain the homer-prevention ability he's shown through much of his career, he should have nowhere to go but up. Nonetheless, his upcoming date with the division-rival Jays on Monday doesn't present an appetizing matchup.
Jul 30 2016Odorizzi (5-5) fired 6.2 scoreless innings in Friday's 5-1 victory over the Yankees, surrendering six hits and striking out five. The young righty kept his impressive scoreless streak alive, throwing 71 of his 104 pitches for strikes in the process while also inducing 13 swings-and-misses. Odorizzi has not given up a run in the last two starts, a span of 14.2 innings, and has only surrendered two earned runs over the 20.2 innings encompassing his last three trips to the mound. It's easily the 26-year-old's best stretch of pitching this season, and he'll look to continue it when he takes on the Royals at Tropicana Field next Wednesday.
Jul 23 2016Odorizzi (4-5) pitched eight-scoreless innings, but walked away with a no-decision in Friday's 13-inning affair against the A's. He allowed five hits and struck out five. The 26-year-old was dealing Friday, but was matched every step of the way by his counterpart Sean Manaaea, leaving Odorizzi with nothing to show for his best outing of the season. After having just 10 in all of last season, Odorizzi already has a MLB-leading 12 no-decisions in 2016. In six of his no-decisions, he has allowed one run or less. Talk about hard luck, Odorizzi is 13-14 since 2015 and has received just 24 runs in his 14 losses. The right-hander will try again Friday when he takes on the Yankees, a team he lost to 2-1 back on May 29.
Jul 17 2016Odorizzi (4-5) allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings Sunday, striking out seven, to pick up the win over the Orioles. It was Odorizzi's first quality start since June 19 and just his seventh on the season in 20 trips to the mound. He threw 65 of 100 pitches for strikes and generated 17 swinging strikes, with his only real mistake getting deposited in the left field seats by Pedro Alvarez, but serving up homers has been Odorizzi's Achilles heel all year. He'll get his next start Friday in Oakland.
Jul 11 2016Odorizzi (3-5) gave up four runs on six hits and a walk over five innings Sunday, striking out four, in a loss to the Red Sox.He wasn't particularly sharp, throwing 52 of 86 pitches for strikes and generating just six swinging strikes, but with David Price dealing for Boston, Odorizzi would have needed to be just about perfect to have a shot at a win. He's managed just one quality start over his last six outings, adding a full run to his ERA over that stretch to send it soaring to a season-high 4.47 heading into the All-Star break.
Jul 5 2016Odorizzi (3-4) was tagged for a season-high seven runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out four over 5.1 innings in Tuesday's loss to the Angels. The right-hander's inconsistency this season is enough to drive owners insane. Odorizzi was sporting a fine-looking 3.36 ERA through the season's first two months, but then posted a 4.96 ERA in June, and now got blasted in his first start of July. Over the past three seasons, he's been historically worse in the second half of the year, and his performance in recent weeks would indicate more of the same is on the way.
Jun 30 2016Odorizzi (3-3) allowed two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out seven over five innings, but received no decision Thursday against the Tigers.Odorizzi was staked to a five-run lead through five innings before giving up a pair of runs before retiring a hitter in the sixth inning, forcing his exit from the contest. Unfortunately, the bullpen blew his three-run lead, keeping him from a potential victory. He's now failed to post a quality start in four of his last five outings, and his ERA is at 3.91 on the year. He'll make his next start Tuesday against the Angels.
Jun 25 2016Odorizzi (3-3) took a no-decision, allowing five runs on eight hits over six innings, including three homers in a loss to the Orioles on Saturday night. He also struck out one and walked one.Tampa Bay spotted Odorizzi a four-run lead, but he left with just a one-run cushion after six. When Odorizzi has run into trouble this season, it's usually been because of homers. Since May 13, he's allowed 12 bombs in 48.2 innings, giving him a 2.22 HR/9 rate over the last nine starts. The good news is despite the high amount of home runs, Odorizzi has a respectable 3.93 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 83 strikeouts in 89.1 innings. His next start will be Thursday against Detroit.
Jun 19 2016Odorizzi (3-3) allowed one run on four hits over six innings Sunday, striking out eight, but came away with a no-decision in a loss to the Giants. He and Jake Peavy turned in nearly identical lines over six innings, but Odorizzi got to watch Xavier Cedeno and his bullpen hand the game to San Francisco in the eighth. Odorizzi's line was good, but he ran up his pitch count by starting off just seven of 22 batters with strikes and generating only 13 swinging strikes. His next turn in the rotation is scheduled for Saturday when he works the back half of a doubleheader in Baltimore.
Jun 14 2016Odorizzi was ejected from Tuesday's game in the sixth inning for arguing balls and strikes. He didn't like the ball-four call on his fourth walk of the night, and Odorizzi let umpire Jerry Meals know it. Odorizzi was at 116 pitches, his second-highest total of the season, and was probably done anyway. The right-hander gave up five runs on nine hits while striking out nine over 5.2 innings prior to his ejection.
Jun 14 2016Odorizzi, who's not gone more than five innings in six of his 13 starts, is hoping to begin pitching deeper into games by avoiding long innings, the Tampa Bay Times reports. "It's just one inning that's usually causing a lot of high pitches, so if I can get one inning figured out I think everything will line up a whole lot better," Odorizzi, who faces the Mariners [Tuesday], said. "I still feel really good and confident with the stuff I've been putting out there."The 26-year-old's numbers-- a 3-3 record, 3.47 ERA, and 1.16 WHIP -- are solid overall, but long innings have frequently served to boost his pitch count. Odorizzi needed 41 pitches to escape the second inning against the D-backs in his most recent start, and a four-inning, 97-pitch outing versus the A's on May 13 was derailed early by a Billy Burns 14-pitch at-bat in the opening frame. Despite the struggles, the right-hander is confident he can get things corrected. "Just try to keep getting early outs or if I get two quick ones try to get that third one quick, too, instead of maybe messing around with a few pitches if I'm ahead and then trying to make that perfect pitch once, twice and it's 2-2 and anything kind of goes from there," he said. "Just stay in attack mode."
Jun 8 2016Odorizzi (3-3) allowed three runs on five hits, struck out eight and walked one over five innings in a 6-3 victory against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday. The right-hander gave up a pair of runs in the second, including a solo homer to Rickie Weeks Jr., and another run in the third, but Odorizzi settled down to retire seven of the last eight batters he faced. He also picked up four strikeouts in the final two frames. The eight punchouts were his most in a game since he recorded 10 in his first outing of the year. Odorizzi will make his next start Tuesday against the Mariners.
Jun 3 2016Odorizzi allowed only two runs on five hits and three walks while fanning six over six inings of work against Minnesota on Friday. He didn't factor in the decision.Odorizzi tossed a quality start, and even though it wasn't enough to get the win, it was certainly good enough to keep Tampa Bay in the game down the stretch. The 26-year-old righty has allowed two runs or less in seven of his past outings, and he lowered his ERA to a respectable 3.33 mark. His next start will come against Arizona on the road next Wednesday.
May 29 2016Odorizzi allowed just one hit Sunday against the Yankees over seven innings, but it was a two-run homer by Starlin Castro that provided the margin of defeat.Odorizzi retired the first 16 batters he faced before one batter reached on an error. He allowed just the one hit and one walk, while striking out six.
May 18 2016Odorizzi (1-2) notched his first win of the year Wednesday against Toronto, though he only lasted five innings, allowing two runs on two hits and four walks while striking out just two.The win against a tough offense is nice, but both hits Odorizzi allowed were homers -- he's now given up five long balls in his last nine innings. Meanwhile, his strikeout rate has stalled out badly since his 10-whiff season debut against these same Blue Jays. He's struck out four or fewer hitters in five of his eight starts and has just eight strikeouts in total over his last three outings. Odorizzi's track record of high strikeout totals will get him plenty of leash from his fantasy owners, but he's certainly a long way from the breakout we hoped was imminent this year.
May 14 2016Odorizzi (0-2) surrendered seven hits, five earned runs and a walk over four innings in Friday's 6-3 loss to the A's. He struck out two.The hard-throwing righty simply couldn't keep the ball in the yard, giving up two of the three gopher balls he surrendered right from the jump in the opening frame. Down 4-0 after just one inning as a result of the long ball, he evened things out a bit over the next three innings, but had an early exit after having thrown 97 pitches overall during his four innings on the mound. The 26-year-old was coming off consecutive quality starts and had surrendered just three homers in his first seven starts combined prior to Friday, so the outing could simply be an outlier that he'll recover from. He'll try to right the ship against the Blue Jays at the dangerous Rogers Centre next Wednesday.
May 7 2016Odorizzi (0-1) allowed two runs on five hits, struck out four and walked one in a no-decision against the Angels on Saturday. He retired 12 of the first 14 hitters in the game. The Angels scored their two runs against Odorizzi in the fifth, but the Rays tied the score in the top of the sixth. Since allowing five runs against the Red Sox on April 21, Odorizzi has yielded four runs in the last 18 innings, yet he hasn't received a decision since April 10. He will try to win his first game of the year Friday against the Athletics.
Apr 26 2016Odorizzi allowed one run on seven hits and one walk while striking out one batter over five innings against the Orioles on Wednesday. He did not factor in the decision in the Rays' 3-1 win.The right-hander was aiming to be more efficient in his fifth start of the season, but he labored out of the gate, needing 43 pitches to get through the first two innings. With the one strikeout, Odorizzi now has 14 strikeouts combined in his last four starts after fanning 10 against the Blue Jays in his 2016 debut. On a positive note, he's not walking many batters at all. His FIP was more than a full run below his ERA entering Tuesday's game.
Apr 26 2016Odorizzi will aim to keep his pitch count down in Tuesday's start, Joey Knight of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi, who'll face off against the Orioles on Tuesday night, has had trouble with efficiency in three of his four starts this season. He was over 100 pitches in his first two trips to the mound of 2016 despite not pitching past the sixth inning in either. He then threw 97 pitches in just four innings versus the Red Sox in his last start on April 21, surrendering five earned runs in a 37-pitch opening frame. Despite the struggles, Odorizzi feels that a smoother performance in the early innings will go a long way towards improvement. "I think if I can get through the first couple of innings with a lower pitch count, I think that's really just gonna catapult me throughout the rest of the season and get things going on the right track."
Apr 15 2016Odorizzi did not factor into the decision while throwing seven innings of four-hit, scoreless ball in Friday's 1-0 loss to the White Sox. He gave up a walk and struck out six.The 26-year-old right-hander ran into some tough luck Friday, as his teammates were thoroughly stymied by Chris Sale for nine innings. Odorizzi encouragingly increased his inning-count for the second straight game, while throwing the least amount of pitches (94) of his first three starts. The outlook doesn't look much brighter for Odorizzi in his next start, which is scheduled to come next Thursday versus David Price and the Red Sox in Fenway Park.
Apr 5 2016Odorizzi struck out 10 but was stuck with a no-decision in Tuesday's game against Toronto, as he allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks over 5.2 innings.Odorizzi was nasty, as he induced 17 swinging strikes and was able to keep Toronto's terrifying lineup from opening up one of the huge rallies that they became known for last year. However, as he was racking up the strikeouts, Odorizzi threw 111 pitches and wasn't able to get out of the sixth inning as a result. Odorizzi has averaged just over 5.2 innings per start over the past two seasons, and he'll need to go deeper in games if he wants to turn his solid results into better win totals.
Mar 31 2016Odorizzi (1-2) surrendered six hits, eight earned runs and three walks over an inning-plus of work in Thursday's 13-8 spring loss to the Pirates. The 26-year-old right-hander was heavily battered by the Pirates and was chased in the second inning. He surrendered a homer to Matt Joyce off the left-field scoreboard with two on in the first, one of 10 batters that Odorizzi faced in a 43-pitch inning. After yielding a leadoff solo shot to Francisco Cervelli in the top of the second frame, the five-year veteran lasted only two more hitters before heading for the showers. "I just didn't have any stuff, plain and simple," said Odorizzi, who makes his regular-season debut on Tuesday against the Blue Jays at Tropicana Field. "Fastball wasn't good. Curve same way. Split, same way. So not too worried about it, really. It's not like I had my good stuff and got hit around."
Mar 27 2016Odorizzi (1-1) surrendered five hits, an earned run and two walks over 6.1 innings in Saturday's 3-1 spring victory over the Pirates. He struck out six.Odorizzi's strong spring continued with an impressive outing versus what was essentially the Pirates' projected Opening Day lineup. The 26-year-old right-hander upped his pitch count to 107 as well, in what was his last extended appearance before the regular season. His only real blemishes on the day were a hit batsmen, as well as the mammoth sixth-inning centerfield solo shot he surrendered to David Freese. Currently slotted for a Top 3-spot in the Rays' starting rotation, Odorizzi now has struck out 12 batters in 12 spring innings, and currently sports a 1.50 ERA.
Mar 16 2016Odorizzi looked strong while pitching five shutout innings against the Red Sox Class-A club Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The right-hander allowed three hits and struck out four. Odorizzi displayed solid control throughout, walking none and finding the strike zone with 53 of his 77 offerings. The increased workload was encouraging for the right-hander, who had pitched a maximum of 3.1 innings in his three appearances so far this spring."The first time you go out there for five innings, you feel like you are out there for forever after you haven't been out there for more than two or three," Odorizzi said. "It was good to get up and down that many times, especially with the heat out there." The Rays' projected third starter plans to stretch out to 90 pitches in his next game, another minor-league start on Monday while the big-league club is Havana for their exhibition game versus the Cuban National Team.
Oct 1 2015Odorizzi outdueled the Marlins' Jose Fernandez and evened his record at 9-9 in Thursday's win over the Marlins, giving up just an unearned run on four hits over seven innings. He struck out seven and walked two.An oblique injury kind of derailed this season for Odorizzi, as he was less effective in the second half after returning from the DL, but the righty still showed a lot overall and finished the season on a high note. He wasn't expensive in this year's drafts, and he probably won't be terribly high-priced next year either; buy in while the buying's good, as there's legitimate 200-strikeout upside here.
Sep 25 2015Odorizzi allowed four runs on seven hits, walking three and striking out four over five innings of a 5-3 loss to Toronto on Friday night.Odorizzi (8-9, 3.49 ERA) needed 111 pitches (67 for strikes) to cover five innings, and couldn't keep the Blue Jays off the scoreboard in three of those five innings. He allowed a pair of home runs in what would be considered a mediocre outing against any team other than Toronto and their high-powered offense. He's working on a solid season and should be a good middle-of-the-rotation option in 2016.
Sep 20 2015Odorizzi had a rough Sunday against the Orioles but finished with a no-decision, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings pitched.Odorizzi's largest error came on a changeup that Chris Davis hit 10 rows into the stands during the third inning, but he did leave the game tied at four. The 25-year-old's three strikeouts is his lowest total since a Jul. 17 disaster start. That, combined with all of his allowed hits, means he was lucky to escape without a loss.
Sep 15 2015Odorizzi gave up three runs on three hits and three walks with five strikeouts in six innings Tuesday against the Yankees. The 25-year-old righty has a 3.26 ERA and 1.12 WHIP and has solidified himself as a legitimate middle-of-the-rotation arm this season. He will take the mound again Sunday at home against the Orioles, against whom he is 2-0 with a 2.84 ERA in 12.2 innings this season.
Sep 9 2015Odorizzi (7-8) shut out the Tigers over six innings in Wednesday's rout, striking out six while allowing six hits and a walk. After giving up nine runs over his last two outings, Odorizzi kept things under control this time,, posting his first scoreless outing in nearly two months. It's been an uneven second half for the talented 25-year-old hurler, but he's shown plenty of promise and could be priced attractively in daily leagues down the stretch.
Sep 4 2015Odorizzi allowed five runs on three hits, walking two and striking out eight over 6.2 innings of a 5-2 loss to the Yankees on Friday night.Odorizzi (6-8, 3.35 ERA) was a victim of the long ball with all three of the hits he allowed landing in the seats. While his peripherals are respectable, and he recently strung together a run of five quality starts in six outings, the end results have not translated into a winning record. There are certainly positive aspects of his game, so he would be difficult to ignore in most fantasy formats.
Aug 30 2015Odorizzi took the loss Saturday, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks over 4.2 innings while striking out five. That ended a streak of six straight starts in which Odorizzi had worked at least six innings. His 3.18 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 117:33 K:BB ratio in 133 innings on the year are still solid, but he'll have his work cut out for him in his next outing, on the road Friday in Yankee Stadium.
Aug 24 2015Odorizzi fanned four and walked one while holding the A's to two runs on three hits over six innings in a no-decision Sunday.Sunday marked the sixth consecutive start where he's gone at least six innings. During that span, Odorizzi has turned in five quality starts and posted a 38:6 K:BB over 36.2 innings, showing no ill effects of the oblique strain that landed him on the disabled list during the first half of the season. He'll take the ball Saturday at home against the Royals in his next scheduled start.
Aug 18 2015Odorizzi took a no decision despite allowing just one run on six hits and a walk over six innings Tuesday against the Astros. He struck out nine.Odorizzi had everything working Tuesday night, as he threw 18 first-pitch strikes to 24 batters and drew a season high 19 swinging strikes in 107 pitches. Odorizzi has four quality starts in his last five outings and lowered his ERA to 3.02.
Aug 12 2015Odorizzi struggled Wednesday, giving up six runs, nine hits and a walk while striking out six in six innings against the Braves.Odorizzi, who had allowed just eight earned runs over 51.1 innings in eight home starts this season, gave up six earned runs and nine hits in six-plus innings. The 25-year-old righty threw 105 pitches, his fourth consecutive start with pitches in the triple digits, and his ERA rose to 3.09, the highest it's been this season. He'll look to bounce back in his next scheduled start Tuesday at Houston.
Aug 7 2015Odorizzi was on his game Friday night, allowing one run on four hits, walking one and striking out six over 6.2 innings, but came away with a no-decision in the Rays' 4-3 loss to the Mets.Odorizzi continues to put up strong peripherals and has compiled an impressive 2.77 ERA. Perhaps most encouraging, he pitched two outs into the seventh inning after not completing six innings in any of his June or July starts. He tossed 102 pitches (65 for strikes) in this one, and his value could increase if he can continue to keep his pitch counts in line, and pitch deeper into games.
Aug 2 2015Odorizzi earned a no-decision Sunday against the Red Sox, allowing three runs with five strikeouts and one walk in six innings. The 25-year-old allowed a pair of runs in the first, but settled down and kept his team in position to win later on in come-from-behind fashion. Odorizzi has been extremely effective this season, as his 2.86 ERA shows, and he will look to keep it rolling Friday against the Mets.
Aug 1 2015Odorizzi will pitch Sunday against the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi last pitched on Tuesday, when he allowed one run in six innings. He struck out eight batters. Tuesday was the first time since May 31 that Odorizzi made it through six innings. Odorizzi has only allowed three runs in his last two starts.
Jul 28 2015Odorizzi was great in a winning effort Tuesday, allowing one run in six innings while striking out eight. The dominant outing was a welcome sight for Odorizzi, who hadn't finished six innings since his start back on May 31. The righty has allowed three total runs in his last two starts, and will take the ball next this weekend against the Red Sox.
Jul 22 2015Odorizzi allowed two runs on five hits and a pair of walks while striking out five in five innings Wednesday in Philadelphia. After throwing just 83 pitches, Odorizzi was lifted for a pinch-hitter after five innings -- not a situation that he'll usually encounter outside of interleague play -- and was thus denied his shot at both a quality start and the win. Nonetheless, it's a strong bounce-back performance after he struggled in Toronto his last time out. Of course, a lot of pitchers have had trouble against the Jays' offense this year. Odorizzi will draw the Miguel Cabrera-less Tigers next week.
Jul 17 2015Odorizzi was roughed up for six runs on six hits, walking five and striking out just one over 4.1 innings of a 6-2 loss to Toronto on Friday night.Odorizzi (5-6, 2.80 ERA) was making just his second start since missing a month with an oblique injury. He struggled with his command, and when he left mistakes out over the plate, the explosive Toronto offense took advantage. Overall he has done an admirable job so far this year, and struggling against the Blue Jays is not unusual for a pitcher who isn't razor sharp, so he may deserve a pass on this one, and will hopefully get back on track the next time out.
Jul 11 2015Odorizzi (oblique) returned from the 15-day disabled list Saturday to pick up his fifth win of the season while facing the Astros. He ultimately pitched 5.2 innings, giving up just two hits and three walks while striking out five.Odorizzi's ERA was lowered to 2.30 after his start since he held the Astros scoreless during his Saturday outing. He showed no signs of rust despite his month-long absence, and consequentially he'll remain a viable option when he takes the mound for his next start.
Jul 7 2015Odorizzi (oblique) struck out five batters over 5.2 scoreless innings in Monday's rehab start for High-A Charlotte, MiLB.com reports.Odorizzi pitched well in both of his rehab starts, allowing one run over 9.2 combined innings. He's expected to rejoin the rotation Saturday against the Astros, leaving Alex Colome to either pitch in the minors or out of the bullpen.
Jul 3 2015Odorizzi (oblique) will get one more rehab start before returning to the Rays' rotation against the Astros, the Tampa Bay Times' Roger Mooney reports. He will presumably get the start July 11 at home against Houston, replacing Alex Colome in the rotation. Odorizzi was pitching like an All-Star prior to his injury, and should still be thought of very highly going forward.
Jul 2 2015Odorizzi (oblique) allowed one run off two hits across 4.0 innings in his first rehab start at High-A Charlotte, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi's quote to Charlotte Sun reporter Josh Vitale is especially encouraging, saying "I feel like the stuff I had today, I could have taken into today's (Rays) game and been perfectly fine." If Odorizzi's stuff is working and he feels okay, there probably isn't any reason to push him into a rehab start. If so, his next start will be with the big league club in four or five days.
Jun 29 2015Odorizzi (oblique) is set to make a rehab start with High-A Charlotte on Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi, originally scheduled to pitch Thursday, will move up to Wednesday to have him and Matt Moore pitch on different days. He will make either one or two rehab starts before rejoining the Rays' rotation in early July.
Jun 27 2015Odorizzi (oblique) will throw 30-45 pitches of batting practice Saturday and plans to start a rehab assignment afterward, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi has been hoping to return by early-to-mid June, so starting a rehab assignment in the next few days will be key. When he does come back, there are going to be a few members of the rotation that Tampa Bay will be happy to replace.
Jun 27 2015Odorizzi (oblique) will make a rehab start Thursday with High-A Charlotte on Thursday, and could rejoin the rotation after that, Roger Mooney of The Tampa Tribune reports.Odorizzi threw 30-45 pitches of BP Saturday, and continues working his way back to the rotation. He indicated June 22 that he planned on rejoining the rotation in a couple of weeks, and if he's ready following the rehab start Thursday, that would indeed be the case.
Jun 22 2015Odorizzi (oblique) threw a 40-pitch bullpen session on Monday and plans to rejoin the rotation in two weeks, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune reports.Odorizzi has hit all of his benchmarks thus far and is still on track for an early-July return to the Rays rotation. With him and Matt Moore scheduled to come back around the same time, it looks as if Erasmo Ramirez and Matt Andriese's time in the rotation may be limited.
Jun 19 2015Odorizzi (oblique) is scheduled to throw a full bullpen session Monday, the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi resumed playing catch last weekend, and he's scheduled to throw off a mound Saturday. With things progressing as expected, he's still on track to return in early July.

If those sessions continue to go well, Odorizzi could start throwing off a mound later this week.
Jun 12 2015The Rays are hoping to get Odorizzi (oblique) back in early July, MLB Network Radio reports. The fact that the Rays are openly expressing early July as the ideal return timetable for Odorizzi effectively rules out a June return. Meanwhile Erasmo Ramirez and Matt Andriese will stick in the back of the Rays' rotation, but both pitchers may be bounced once Odorizzi and Matt Moore (elbow) return in July.
Jun 9 2015Rays pitching coach Jim Hickey said Tuesday that Odorizzi (oblique) is probably a few weeks away from pitching in a major-league game, MLB Network Radio reports.Although the injury isn't considered overly serious, Odorizzi will likely be placed on the 15-day disabled list, after exiting Friday's start against the Marlins with a left oblique strain. The Rays have yet to announce a likely replacement for Thursday's game against the Angels.
Jun 9 2015Odorizzi (oblique) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi was expected to land on the DL after leaving Friday's start against the Mariners with a strained oblique. The injury isn't considered overly serious, but it will put Odorizzi on the shelf for at least the next two weeks. The Rays recalled right hander Andrew Bellatti after placing Odorizzi on the DL.
Jun 6 2015Odorizzi (oblique) will see a doctor Monday but it is "fair" to say he will miss at least a little time, according to manager Kevin Cash, the Tampa Times' Roger Mooney reports. He left Friday's game in the fifth inning with an oblique strain and while he has not officially been ruled out for his next start, that does seem likely. Odorizzi said he felt the same Saturday as when he exited Friday. More information should be available following his visit with the doctor Monday, but owners should not expect him to make a start next week. The Rays' rotation has been ravaged by injuries, and the team may be forced to have a bullpen game in place of Odorizzi if he misses a start.
Jun 5 2015Odorizzi left Friday's game with a left oblique strain.Odorizzi tossed 4.1 scoreless innings before exiting Friday's game with the injury. The extent of his injury is uncertain, so it remains to be seen if he will be available for his next start.
Jun 5 2015Odorizzi exited Friday's game in the fifth inning with an undisclosed injury. The Rays did not provide further details regarding Odorizzi's status, but expect an update on his status as more details become available.
May 25 2015Odorizzi turned in yet another solid performance, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits, walking two and striking out seven over seven innings of a 4-1 loss to Seattle on Monday night.Odorizzi (3-5, 2.31 ERA) can't buy any run support as his mates have scored two or fewer runs in nine of his 2015 starts. Despite that he has been both proficient and efficient, and will hope that more help from the offense is on the way.
May 20 2015Odorizzi (3-4) allowed two runs and four hits over six innings, striking out two and walking two Wednesday against the Braves. It was another solid outing for Odorizzi, but the young right-hander was stuck with another loss. He's looking like a true success from the Rays' pitching development and they'll need it if they want to continue challenging for the AL East, given Alex Cobb and Drew Smyly's injuries.
May 10 2015Odorizzi (illness) relayed that he felt "a lot better" Saturday and has been cleared to start Sunday against the Rangers, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi was bumped back from Saturday's start after his body had been weakened by the illness, but he never deviated from his routine, as he was able to play catch each of the last few days. May 9 2015Odorizzi is expected to start Sunday's game against the Rangers, Ira Kaufman of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday due to illness, but he said he's feeling much better and expects to take the mound Sunday. May 5 2015Odorizzi struck out six and did not walk a batter while holding the Red Sox to one run on seven hits over seven innings Monday night. In a very difficult road matchup at Fenway Park, Odorizzi delivered in a big way to earn his third victory of the season. He's now toting a 32:8 K:BB over 40.2 innings through six starts, helping to shoulder the workload in the Rays' rotation while Drew Smyly and Alex Cobb opened the season on the DL. While he's cruising thus far, Odorizzi has not allowed a home run this season after serving up 20 over 168 innings a year ago, and he's also benefited from a BABIP (.241) that is more than 40 points below his career mark (.284). Even with those underlying blemishes, Odorizzi's improved control has been a big part of his early-season gains (1.8 BB/9).
Apr 28 2015Odorizzi (2-2) picked up his third loss of the season Tuesday against the Yankees, allowing nine hits and four earned runs in 6.1 innings while striking out just four batters.Ororizzi's record isn't great, but he's made it through at least six innings in all five of his starts this season and has allowed a combined nine earned runs. His strikeout numbers are down from last season, though, only fanning 7.24 batters per nine innings compared to 9.23 from last season.
Apr 24 2015Odorizzi allowed one run, three hits, three walks and had three strikeouts in 6.2 innings in Thursday's no-decision against the Red Sox.Odorizzi's only blemish of the night came in the second inning, when Pablo Sandoval doubled and scored from Daniel Nava's sac fly. The 25-year-old will next face off against the Yankees in New York on Tuesday.
Apr 13 2015Odorizzi was masterful Monday, earning the win by holding the Blue Jays to one run in eight innings. The 25-year-old fanned three and walked three in the outing. After a promising 2014 season, Odorizzi has allowed just one run in his first 14.2 innings this season. He'll look to continue his success this weekend at home against the Yankees.
Apr 9 2015Odorizzi (1-0) excelled in his first start of the season Wednesday against Baltimore, giving up just two hits over 6.2 shutout innings with seven strikeouts. His preseason sleeper status has materialized itself quickly with a star-quality first outing. We'll see if he can keep it up, as control hasn't always been Odorizzi's strong suit, and he was also rather vulnerable to the long ball last year.
Apr 2 2015Updating a previous report, Odorizzi will take the hill for the Rays' third regular season game, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi and Nate Karns were expected to pitch in the second and third games of the season following Opening Day starter Chris Archer, but the order had not yet been determined. The decision was previously thought to be based on matchup, but since both options are right-handed, another factor may have came into play. A trendy sleeper in 2015 drafts, Odorizzi has allowed three earned runs on nine hits in 8.2 innings this spring.
Mar 28 2015Odorizzi will start the second game of the regular season for the Rays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Manager Kevin Cash made the announcement Friday evening that Odorizzi then Nathan Karns will follow opening-day starter Chris Archer in the Rays' rotation. Sep 25 2014Odorizzi gave up five runs on seven hits over three innings in a losing effort Wednesday against Boston. The loss dropped his record to 11-13 for the season, and while Odorizzi's 4.18 ERA leaves plenty to be desired, there were some encouraging signs in 2014. Most notably, Odorizzi increased his strikeout rate to 24.2% after sitting at 18.0% in his debut in 2013. Further, xFIP (3.89) and FIP (3.74) point to a potentially lower ERA if his skills hold, with room for further improvement if he's able to cut back on his free passes (8.2% BB%) or home runs (1.1 HR/9) in 2015.
Sep 10 2014Odorizzi struggled mightily Wednesday, giving up six earned runs on five hits and three walks with two strikeouts in 4.1 innings against the Yankees.Odorizzi's scoreless innings streak ended at 14.1 in the bottom of the first inning Wednesday, and he was unable to sustain another such streak as the game went on. He'll take the mound again Monday against the Yankees and will make a second start next week against the White Sox.
Sep 4 2014Odorizzi scattered three hits over 7.1 scoreless innings against Toronto on Thursday, but did not factor in the decision. He did not issue a walk and struck out three.Odorizzi was fantastic for the second straight start, but Tampa Bay gave him zero run support, and he continues to be dominate at home in general, as he entered Thursday's game with a 2.92 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 96 strikeouts in 86.3 innings. Conversely, he's been ineffective on the road, posting a 5.61 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in 61 innings away from home. Furthermore, his three worst starts of the year, in which he surrendered a total of 20 runs, were all outside of the friendly confines of Tropicana Field. With that said, you might want to consider sitting him in his next start at Yankee Stadium, depending on your other options and league dynamics. It could be smooth sailing after his outing in New York though, as he's scheduled to make consecutive starts at home.
Aug 31 2014Odorizzi was brilliant in Saturday's win over the Red Sox, allowing just one hit and three walks while piling up seven strikeouts across seven scoreless innings.Coming off of possibly his worst effort of the season, Odorizzi rebounded with one of his best. The rookie right-hander was nothing short of dominant over seven frames Saturday night, as a fourth-inning single off the bat of Will Middlebrooks was the only hit that the Red Sox' offense could scratch out. Odorizzi has put together a more than respectable campaign for the Rays to this point, which features an outstanding 10.0 K/9 through 147.1 innings. He is slated to be back atop the mound Thursday versus the Blue Jays.
Aug 25 2014Odorizzi lost Monday against the Orioles as he pitched four innings and allowed eight runs, 11 hits and one walk to go along with three strikeouts.Odorizzi had three straight quality starts entering Monday, but came away with his worst performance on the season. He has pitched well overall of late, but his ERA increased all the way up to 4.23 after this rough outing.
Aug 20 2014Odorizzi pitched 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven batters before picking up his 10th loss (9-10) of the year in Tuesday's game against the Tigers.Tuesday's outing marks three straight quality starts for Odorizzi, as he has allowed just five runs in his last three starts (19.2 innings pitched). For the most part, Odorizzi is getting the job done and now sports a 3.83 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 153:48 K:BB ratio in 136.1 innings pitched this year. His next start is scheduled for Monday on the road against the Orioles.
Aug 14 2014Odorizzi had another nice outing Thursday, allowing two runs and four hits over seven innings at Texas. He issued just one walk and struck out seven batters.Other than a five-run clunker on August 3, Odorizzi has been great in his last 10 outings (59.1 innings), with five quality starts and 65 strikeouts during that stretch. On a down note, he hasn't been able to pitch deep into games this season, going seven innings or more in just four of 24 starts. One might assume that his great strikeout rate (10.2 K/9IP) is an explanation for his short outings, as strikeout artists tend to run up a high pitch counts. He's averaging just 97.6 pitches per start though, so it's more that the Rays haven't unleashed him yet. Whichever the case, Odorizzi's stock would rise if he worked deeper into games, as his aforementioned strikeout rate is fifth best among all MLB starting pitchers.
Aug 9 2014Odorizzi struck out nine and did not walk a batter while giving up three hits over six shutout innings to earn his eighth win of the season Saturday against the Cubs.Pounding the strike zone, Odorizzi turned in another strong outing as his breakout campaign continues. The nine strikeouts were his highest total since June 21 against the Astros (10), while the victory was his fourth in five trips to the mound. He'll face the Rangers in Arlington on Thursday in his next scheduled start.
Aug 4 2014Odorizzi labored through three innings Sunday afternoon versus the Angels, surrendering five earned runs, eight hits and three walks while picking up just one strikeout. After an outstanding month of July that saw him go 4-1 with a 2.90 ERA and 9.3 K/9 across five starts, Odorizzi's run of strong work came to a screeching halt Sunday afternoon. The Rays' right-hander has pitched far too well for any knee-jerk reaction to be necessary, but fantasy owners should keep in mind that this is the rookie's first full season in the majors and his innings are getting up there a bit. Odorizzi will be looking to bounce back next weekend against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.
Jul 28 2014Odorizzi won Monday against the Brewers as he pitched seven innings and allowed one run and three hits to go along with five strikeouts.Odorizzi continues to pitch well as he has allowed two earned runs or less in eight of his last nine starts, lowering his ERA from 5.31 to 3.80 over that stretch. Tampa Bay is playing very well of late and Odorizzi has been a big part of their success.
Jul 23 2014Odorizzi pitched 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out eight batters in picking up his sixth win (6-8) of the year Tuesday in the Rays' 7-2 victory over the Cardinals.Although he was one out from a quality start Tuesday, Odorizzi, nonetheless, has been pitching great for nearly two months. Odorizzi has given up no more than three runs in his last eight starts (allowing just 13 earned runs in 49 innings pitched). He now has a 3.18 ERA and 1.34 WHIP on the year. Odorizzi will make his next start Monday at home against the Brewers.
Jul 12 2014Odorizzi (5-8) was efficient in filling in for an ill David Price against the Jays in victory Saturday, giving up two earned runs on six hits while walking two and fanning seven. The righty, who took the hill a day earlier than expected to cover for Price, pitched into the seventh and departed while up 8-2. His ERA improved to 4.01 in this one, while his BB:K ratio now sits at a solid 39:116 across 101 innings this season.
Jul 11 2014Odorizzi will move up one day to start Saturday against the Blue Jays in place of David Price (illness), Steve Carner of WDAE reports. The Rays are hopeful that Price will move into Odorizzi's previously scheduled spot Sunday if he's healthy enough to do so, while Odorizzi is on regular rest Saturday anyway thanks to an off-day in the schedule Thursday.
Jul 7 2014Odorizzi pitched well in a losing effort Monday, holding the Royals to two runs in six innings. The young righty struck out eight in the outing while allowing just six hits. For Odorizzi, Monday's outing was his first quality start in his last three attempts. He'll face the Blue Jays in his final start before the All-Star break.
Jul 2 2014Odorizzi struck out four and walked one while holding the Yankees to three runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings to earn his fourth win of the season Wednesday. After surrendering solo homers to Brett Gardner in the first and Brian McCann in the third, Odorizzi settled down somewhat and narrowly missed giving the Rays a quality start. He'll close out the pre-break schedule with a two-start week, facing the Royals on Monday before a start against the Blue Jays on Sunday at Tropicana Field.
Jun 27 2014Odorizzi turned in a solid, albeit inefficient, five innings in a no-decision in the nightcap of a doubleheader against the Orioles on Friday night. He allowed one run on six hits, walking four and striking out six.He needed 106 pitches (just 63 for strikes) to cover the five innings and he left with the game in a 1-1 tie. Odorizzi has struggled with control all season which limits his ability to pitch deep into games and his opportunities to collect wins, but their is upside there and as his command sharpens his value should increase.
Jun 21 2014Odorizzi was masterful in carving up the Astros on Saturday, fanning 10 and giving up just one hit in 7.1 innings of shutout ball.Remarkably, Odorizzi managed to stay efficient despite a first-pitch strike rate of less than half (12-of-25). The lone hit he allowed was a fourth-inning Jose Altuve infield single, attesting to the fact that he really was nearly unhittable in the home confines of Tropicana Field on this day. This was the 24-year-old's first win since May 14 (seven starts ago), and despite his lackluster record of 3-7, he's been able to lower his ERA from 5.31 to 4.29 over his last three starts while racking up a 5:20 BB:K ratio across 20 innings during that span.
Jun 17 2014Odorizzi worked 5.1 innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out five versus the Orioles Monday night.Odorizzi was brilliant through the first five frames of Monday's match-up versus the Orioles, but was touched for a double and a two-run homer in the top of the sixth before being lifted. The rookie right-hander has put together back-to-back solid efforts, allowing just three earned runs on six hits with a 10-to-3 K/BB ratio across his last 12.2 innings. Odorizzi is next slated to toe the rubber Saturday afternoon versus the Astros.
Jun 10 2014Odorizzi was excellent Tuesday, giving up just one run on three hits and a walk with five strikeouts against the Cardinals.Unfortunately, he took the loss because he made one mistake, a solo home run to Matt Holliday, and was facing Adam Wainwright, who held the Rays scoreless over seven innings. This could be his best start of the season, because unfortunately he's been pretty inconsistent all year, giving up nine runs over 8.1 innings in his previous two starts. He'll line up to have two starts during next week's home stand, first against Baltimore on Monday and then Houston on Saturday, making him a high-upside play in weekly leagues.
Jun 5 2014Odorizzi (2-6) struck out eight batters without a walk in five innings Thursday against Miami, but allowed four runs on seven hits.Unfortunately for Odorizzi, a parade of singles (and one double) turned his line ugly in an otherwise impressive performance.
May 31 2014Odorizzi lasted just 3.1 innings, surrendering five earned runs on six hit and a walk while striking out six in Saturday's 7-1 loss to the Red Sox.The only positive to take away from this lackluster outing for Odorizzi is that he picked up 6-of-10 outs on strikes. The rookie's night was cut short due to the fact that he ran his pitch count up to 84 without getting through the fourth inning. After turning in solid work over the past few weeks, this effort was certainly discouraging for the 24-year-old hurler. Odorizzi sports an outstanding 10.8 K/9, but that is where his current fantasy value pretty much stops.
May 26 2014Odorizzi held the Red Sox to one run on four hits over six innings, striking out five batters in the Rays' 8-5 victory. In spite of the solid effort, Odorizzi did not factor into the decision, as reliever Joel Peralta blew a two-run lead in the seventh inning, before the Rays rallied for five runs in the bottom of the frame. Odorizzi has rebounded gracefully from a rocky start to the 2014 season by allowing one run or fewer in three of his last four starts while striking out a total of 31 batters. Unfortunately, an untimely offense has allowed him to pick up just one win over that span.
May 20 2014Odorizzi gave up three earned runs on four hits and five walks with eight strikeouts in 4.2 innings Tuesday against the A's.Odorizzi seemingly would not or could not pitch to contact in this one, and he needed a whopping 113 pitches to go less than five full innings. His strikeout totals lately have been nice, but there's always the worry that they could start to come at the expense of efficiency. He'll take on a very patient Red Sox lineup in his next start Sunday.
May 14 2014Odorizzi struck out seven and walked two while holding the Mariners to one hit over six shutout innings Wednesday to pick up his second win of the season. The strikeouts continue to be piled up at an impressive clip, but Odorizzi's inability to get deep into games has been a major issue this season. Wednesday's start marked the first time since April 4 that he pitched through the sixth inning. Walks (4.2 BB/9) and hard contact (.358 BABIP) have also been an issue for Odorizzi, and he'll look to keep things moving in the right direction with a pair of home starts next week against the A's (Tuesday) and Red Sox (May 25).
May 9 2014Odorizzi worked five scoreless innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out 11 versus the Indians Friday night. In easily the most dominant performance of his young career, Odorizzi found a solid rhythm Friday night after several consecutive lackluster efforts. The right-handed rookie still carries a lofty 5.79 ERA for the year. However, with 37 strikeouts in 32.2 innings, Odorizzi is certainly showing strong potential.
May 3 2014Odorizzi worked just four innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts versus the Yankees Saturday afternoon. The run of short starts continues for Odorizzi, as the young hurler has failed to get through five innings in each of his last three outings. After retiring the first nine batters he faced Saturday afternoon, things started to fall apart in the bottom of the fourth. Odorizzi now holds a poor 6.83 ERA on the campaign while issuing 14 free passes in just 27.2 innings. Outside of deep keeper leagues, it is difficult to recommend the talented 24 year old at this point.
Apr 23 2014Odorizzi lasted just 3.1 innings against a tough Orioles lineup Wednesday, allowing five hits, four earned runs and three walks with five strikeouts. He came away with a no-decision, as the Rays were able to come back and tie the game. After tossing six shutout innings in his first start of the season, Odorizzi has now gave up seven, three and four runs in his past three starts, respectively. Wednesday's outing was his shortest of the year, as he threw 88 pitches before being pulled with one out in the fourth inning. Odorizzi will take a 6.52 ERA and 1.71 WHIP into his next scheduled start against White Sox.
Apr 15 2014Odorizzi (illness) is still listed as the Rays' starter for Tuesday's game against Baltimore, while Enny Romero is scheduled to start at Triple-A Durham on Tuesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The Rays recently scratched Romero from the Bulls' rotation, but it appears as though Odorizzi will be healthy enough to take his turn Tuesday night against Baltimore if the gain isn't postponed by rain forecasted throughout game time.
Apr 15 2014Odorizzi won't make his scheduled start Tuesday at Baltimore due to a postponement, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. An appearance from Odorizzi was precarious due to an illness, but until the game was called due to weather, he was still expected to take the mound. He's unlikely to supplant Wednesday's starter David Price, meaning a doubleheader would be preferable to allow him to stay on schedule.
Apr 15 2014Odorizzi will start Wednesday's game against the Orioles, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. His scheduled start Tuesday was rained out, and the Rays will keep the rotation order in tact, with David Price being shifted back to Thursday.
Apr 14 2014Odorizzi was forced to cut his session of catch short Monday after falling victim to an illness, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The Rays have already went ahead and scratched Enny Romero from his start at Triple-A Durham, giving the team a fallback option if Odorizzi can't make his scheduled start against the Orioles on Tuesday. Odorizzi will rest up at the hotel over night in preparation for Tuesday, but could be given a bit of a reprieve with rain in the forecast for the Baltimore area that night.
Apr 4 2014Odorizzi was brilliant in his 2014 debut, working six shutout innings while recording four strikeouts and three walks.Odorizzi more than backed up the Rays' decision to make him their fifth starter heading into the season. The talented 24 year old held a strong Rangers' lineup to a mere three hits over his half-dozen frames of work en route to the first win of his young big league career.
Mar 22 2014Odorizzi was named Tampa's No. 5 starter Saturday, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune reports. The presumed favorite to claim the final rotation spot after Jeremy Hellickson succumbed to an elbow injury, Odorizzi narrowly beat out Cesar Ramos and Erik Bedard for the gig. Though Odorizzi has compiled an underwhelming 3.75 ERA and 8:6 K:BB ratio over 12 spring innings, he's excelled throughout his minor league career and offers enough potential to make him worthy of a late-round flyer in deeper leagues.
Feb 3 2014With Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) expected to miss the first 6-8 weeks of the season, Odorizzi could open the year in the starting rotation, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi, one of the Rays' top pitching prospects, has tasted the majors in spot starts over the last two seasons. He had another strong season at the Triple-A level, going 9-6 with a 3.33 ERA and a 9.0 SO/9 rate. It is generally assumed to be a matter of time before Odorizzi is a full-time member of the rotation for the Rays and he has a chance to earn the job out of spring training.
Sep 23 2013Odorizzi may be a candidate to start Friday's game against the Blue Jays, the Tampa Bay Times reports. The scheduled starter for Friday's game is Jeremy Hellickson, but given Hellickson's struggles this season, they may consider handing the ball to Odorizzi. Odorizzi finished a strong year with Triple-A Durham, going 9-6 with a 3.33 ERA and 124 strikeouts in 22 starts. The announcement will likely also depend on how the Rays perform in the playoff race this week.
Sep 21 2013Odorizzi was recalled from Triple-A Durham on Friday. The Rays didn't anticipate using Odorizzi immediately after recalling him Friday, but his service was made necessary with the game against the Orioles lasting 18 innings. Odorozzi contributed 3.2 scoreless innings in relief to help keep the Orioles off the score sheet over the final 12 innings of the game.
Sep 17 2013The Rays are expected to recall Odorizzi on Friday, the Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin reports.Odorizzi had a strong year at Triple-A Durham, posting a 3.33 ERA with 124 strikeouts and 40 walks in 124.1 innings. His success didn't really carry over the bigs, however, as he put up a 5.03 ERA and never lasted more than 5.2 innings in four spot starts for the Rays. No word yet on how the team plans to use him this time around.
Aug 30 2013Odorizzi was optioned to Double-A Montgomery on Friday, but the Rays will call him back up Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi earned a spot start Thursday, during which he yielded one run on four hits and two walks, while striking out three in five frames. Before he returns to the big club, his 25-man roster will be utilized to shore up the bullpen, with Brandon Gomes' arrival as a corresponding move.
Aug 29 2013Odorizzi (0-1) allowed one run over five innings Thursday in a loss to the Angels, striking out three and allowing four hits and two walks. The 23-year-old was solid in his sixth MLB start, though he's yet to flash the level of domination he's shown at times in the minor leagues.
Aug 29 2013Odorizzi has been recalled from Triple-A Durham, and will start on Thursday against the Angels.Odorizzi has already made three spot starts for the Rays this season, and his fourth on Thursday will push David Price back to Friday. The 23-year-old righty owns a 1.134 WHIP and an impressive 9.0 K/9 over 124.1 innings in Triple-A this season.
Aug 27 2013Odorizzi will be recalled from Triple-A Durham to start Thursday's game, the Tampa Bay Times reports. With Odorizzi getting the nod Thursday, David Price will have his start pushed to Friday. Odorizzi appeared in four games for the Rays earlier this season, allowing 22 hits in 18.0 innings. In 124.1 Triple-A innings, he posted a 3.33 ERA with 124 strikeouts.
Jun 18 2013Odorizzi returned to Triple-A Durham after starting the second game of the Rays' doubleheader against the Red Sox on Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi was called up to take Alex Cobb's (concussion) spot on the active roster. He pitched well, allowing just one earned run in 5.2 innings, but received a no-decision.
Jun 17 2013Odorizzi will start the second game of Tampa's doubleheader with Boston on Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi will be called up to take Alex Cobb's start after Cobb was placed on the DL with a mild concussion. Chances are Odorizzi's stay in The Bigs won't be long-lasting, however, as the Rays will most likely fill Cobb's spot in the rotation with Alex Colome if Cobb is sidelined for an extended period. Chris Archer will start the first game Tuesday.
Jun 16 2013Odorizzi may start in Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader in Boston, the Tampa Bay Times reports. The Rays have an decision to make with Tuesday's opening in the rotation, after Alex Cobb was placed on the 7-day DL on Sunday due to a mild concussion. If Cobb requires more time on the pine, Odorizzi will likely be optioned back to Durham, with Alex Colome taking Cobb's spot. In three unremarkable outings (two starts) with the Rays in 2013, Odorizzi has put up an 8.03 ERA, 1.703 WHIP, and 12:4 K:BB ratio in 12.1 innings.
Jun 13 2013Odorizzi was optioned back to Triple-A Durham on Thursday, the Tampa Bay Times reports. The Rays reinstated Alex Cobb from the bereavement list after the minimum three days and Odorizzi will head back to starting at Triple-A. He pitched 3.1 innings in relief on Thursday against the Royals and allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four. He took over a game that was well out of hand and still totaled 68 pitches in the outing. He is still a top prospect for the Rays and will be available to return in long relief or the rotation later in the season should an injury or rotation change be made.
Jun 11 2013Odorizzi was officially recalled from Triple-A Durham by the Rays on Tuesday.Odorizzi may only be up temporarily with the Rays placing Alex Cobb on the bereavement list on Tuesday. The Rays need an extra arm with the team throwing 14 innings on Monday and Odorizzi can throw multiple innings out of the bullpen if needed. Something that could extend his stay is if Kyle Farnsworth will need to head to the DL later in the week.
Jun 11 2013Odorizzi is expected to be called up from Triple-A Durham on Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi was scheduled to start for Triple-A Durham on Tuesday but instead may be heading to Tampa to provide the bullpen with an extra arm. The Rays played 14 innings on Monday against the Red Sox and with Kyle Farnsworth possibly heading to the DL, they need a short-term arm that can log multiple innings in relief.
May 28 2013Odorizzi was optioned back to Triple-A Durham on Tuesday, the Tampa Tribune reports.Since being called up on May 18, Odorizzi has started two games, lasting just 9.0 total innings and allowing a combined nine earned runs. While his control (two walks) was solid, he could benefit from more time at the minor league level.
May 27 2013Odorizzi lasted just four innings Monday against the Marlins, allowing six runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out two.The Rays jumped out to a big six-run lead in the second inning, but Odorizzi allowed Miami to catch up by surrendering three runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings. The 23-year-old lefty has now given up nine runs in nine innings with Tampa, but he will likely get in at least a few more starts before David Price (triceps) is ready to return.
May 22 2013Odorizzi will make his next start Monday against the Marlins, the Tampa Bay Times reports.Odorizzi was originally scheduled to start Sunday against the Yankees, but with the Rays off on Thursday, manager Joe Maddon elected to keep Alex Cobb on his same schedule so he could make the Sunday start. It nonetheless works out well for Odorizzi, who should fare better against the Marlins' punchless offense than he would have against the Yankees.
May 20 2013Odorizzi did not record a decision Monday against Toronto as he pitched five innings and allowed three runs, five hits and one walk to go along with six strikeouts.Odorizzi was solid in his first start with the Rays, but wasn't able to factor into the decision as it took him 92 pitches to get through five innings. He will likely only start until David Price (triceps) returns from the DL, but he could be a solid source for strikeouts over those few starts.
May 19 2013Odorizzi will take over David Price's (triceps) place in the rotation, as long as he's sidelined, the Tampa Tribune reports.Price is only slated to miss two or three starts, which should allow Odorizzi ample opportunity to show his worth. In his eight nods at Triple-A Durham this season, Odorizzi has gone 4-0 with a 3.83 ERA, 1.109 WHIP, and 47:15 K:BB ratio across 44.2 innings.

May 6 2013Odorizzi threw seven no-hit innings with four walks and three strikeouts in a win for Triple-A Durham on Sunday.Odorizzi combined with three other pitchers to throw a team no-hitter despite one earned run being allowed after he left the game. He was also named the International League Pitcher of the Week with the performance. Through six starts this season, Odorizzi is off to a 3-0 start with a 2.65 ERA and is averaging 10.3 strikeouts per nine innings. Despite the hot start, Odorizzi still may be behind fellow pitching prospect Chris Archer in line to be called up to the rotation if the opportunity were to arise at some point in the season.
Mar 12 2013Odorizzi was optioned to Triple-A Durham on Tuesday, the Tampa Tribune reports.Odorizzi struggled in three Grapefruit League outings this spring, allowing five runs on eight hits and three walks, while notching six strikeouts over five innings. The Rays' top-notch rotation does not have room for him, meaning he'll start the season in the minors yet again.
Mar 8 2013Odorizzi gave up two runs on three hits over two innings against the Pirates on Thursday. For the second straight outing, Odorizzi was knocked around a bit as the Blue Jays tagged him for three runs on five hits -- including two homers -- in his previous appearance on March 1. Odorizzi is on track to begin the season at Triple-A Durham.
Feb 20 2013Odorizzi will likely begin the season with Triple-A Durham, according to the Tampa Bay Times.Odorizzi has shown plenty of promise this spring already in his bullpen sessions earning the praises of coaches and teammates. With a crowd of Jeff Niemann, Chris Archer, and Roberto Hernandez already competing for the fifth spot in the rotation, Odorizzi will be able to gain some extra experience at Triple-A and will be available should injuries occur or a spot opens in 2013. He appears to have a bright future as his strong 2012 can attest. Between Double-A and Triple-A, he posted a 15-5 record, a 3.03 ERA, and 135 strikeouts over 25 starts.
Dec 9 2012Odorizzi has been traded to Tampa Bay from the Royals along with Wil Myers, Mike Montgomery, and another prospect in exchange for James Shields, Wade Davis, and a player to be named or cash from Tampa Bay.It's interesting that the Royals were comfortable parting with Odorizzi, who still has six years of club control and is generally regarded as a starter capable of being a No. 4 option in a big league rotation, when starting pitching is their greatest need. Instead, the Royals are putting stock in Wade Davis' move back to the rotation, after acquiring him as a part of Sunday night's deal. Odorizzi moves into a crowded situation in Tampa Bay, and could very well be included in another deal if the Rays continue to shuffle up the deck for 2013.
Dec 9 2012Odorizzi has been traded to the Rays as part of a blockbuster deal that sent James Shields to Kansas City. It's interesting that the Royals were comfortable parting with Odorizzi, who still has six years of club control and is generally regarded as a starter capable of being a No. 4 option in a big league rotation, when starting pitching is their greatest need. Instead, the Royals are putting stock in Wade Davis' move back to the rotation, after acquiring him as a part of Sunday night's deal. Sep 23 2012Making his major league debut, Odorizzi gave up three runs on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts against the Indians on Sunday. He actually pitched a lot better than his line insinuates as he allowed just two hits through the first five innings. In the sixth inning, however, after retiring Shin-Soo Choo for the first out, he gave up the three runs on four consecutive hits and was promptly removed from the game. Overall, the outing was a successful one and the young right-hander should get another opportunity before the season comes to a close.
Sep 19 2012Odorizzi is expected to make his major league debut Sunday against the Indians, the Kansas City Star reports.Odorizzi dazzled while splitting time between Double-A and Triple-A this season, finishing with 135 strikeouts in 145.1 innings while posting a 3.03 ERA. The start could amount to an audition for the rotation in 2013, an area where the Royals are in desperate need for a young infusion of talent.
Sep 17 2012Manager Ned Yost said that Odorizzi would start off in the bullpen but is being targeted for a possible start against Cleveland next week, the Kansas City Star reports.Odorizzi, who was acquired by the Royals in December 2010 in the trade that sent Zack Greinke to Milwaukee, was 15-5 with a 3.03 ERA this season while splitting time between Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha.
