Jun 8 2023Hutchison signed a minor-league contract Thursday with the Phillies, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison was granted his release last week from the Blue Jays' Triple-A affiliate in Buffalo, where had posted a 5.66 ERA and 31:29 K:BB in 35 innings (nine starts) this season. The 32-year-old right-hander spent some time with the Phillies in 2018 and will return as organizational rotation depth.
Mar 18 2023Hutchison (oblique) will miss his next start, but the club is hopeful he won't be sidelined long term, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: An MRI showed no structural damage, and while he will not make his regularly scheduled start, which would have been Sunday or Monday, it sounds like his absence will be a matter of weeks, not months. Hutchison will serve as organizational rotation depth this season and is unlikely to make the Opening Day roster.
Jan 6 2023Hutchison signed with the Blue Jays as a non-roster invitee Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison spent the past couple seasons with Detroit and had a 4.53 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 68:42 K:BB across 105.1 innings. The 32-year-old now rejoins the Blue Jays on a minor-league deal, though he'll also be present for big-league spring training.
Oct 13 2022Hutchison cleared waivers and elected free agency Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison was designated for assignment Tuesday after he posted a 4.53 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 105.1 innings over 28 appearances (18 starts) in the majors this year. He'll be free to seek out other opportunities heading into the offseason.
Oct 11 2022Hutchison was designated for assignment by the Tigers on Tuesday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After turning in one of the better campaigns of his career in 2022 -- a 4.53 ERA and 1.48 WHIP -- Hutchison finds himself on waivers nonetheless. The decision to DFA him comes after the Tigers claimed Jermaine Palacios off waivers from Minnesota. Should Hutchison clear waivers, it's possible he may elect to test the free-agent market this offseason and sign elsewhere.
Oct 2 2022Hutchison gave up two earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five over 4.1 innings in a 3-2 victory over the Twins on Saturday. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison threw 103 pitches in his 18th and final start of the year but could not make it out of the fifth inning. The 32-year-old right-hander had a rough end to his season, posting a poor 6.20 ERA in five September starts leading up to this matchup with the Tigers. Hutchison logged 105.1 innings in 2022, the most in any season since he was a starter with Toronto in 2015. He finishes the year with a 4.53 ERA and 1.48 WHIP.
Sep 24 2022Hutchison (3-9) earned the win against the White Sox on Saturday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out one batter over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison was far from dominant in the start -- he induced only six swinging strikes and fanned just one batter -- but he hung around long enough to earn his first victory in September. The right-hander gave up a pair of solo homers and a double among the four hits he allowed, yet he held Chicago to just two runs. Hutchison has struggled with a 4.54 ERA and 1.46 WHIP over 101 innings this season, and his 14.7 percent strikeout rate ranks in the bottom five percent leaguewide.
Sep 18 2022Hutchison (2-9) allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four in 4.2 innings to take the loss during Sunday's game against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison allowed just two runs over the first four innings of Sunday's matchup but struggled in the top of the fifth inning. He loaded the bases before giving up a run by walking Gavin Sheets with two outs. He was removed from the game afterward, but Jason Foley gave up a grand slam to the next batter. Hutchison has now given up at least two runs in each of his last five outings, and he's been charged with back-to-back losses. The right-hander tentatively lines up for a rematch with the White Sox on the road Saturday.
Sep 13 2022Hutchison (2-8) took the loss Tuesday against Houston, allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out two in 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison allowed homers to Yordan Alvarez and Kyle Tucker as Houston scored four times in the first three innings. Four of the nine hits Hutchison allowed went for extra bases. He's allowed six homers in his last four starts, spanning 20.1 innings. Left-handed hitters have given him the most trouble this season and have compiled a .288/.352/.515 slash line with nine homers in 179 plate appearances against the southpaw.
Sep 7 2022Hutchison allowed two runs on five hits across four innings and did not factor into the decision in Wednesday's game against the Angels. He walked two and struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison wasn't particularly efficient, as he needed 84 pitches to last four innings, and that was enough for manager A.J. Hinch. The righty had gone five innings or more in his previous seven appearances. Hutchison still did a decent job of limiting runs in the shorter outing, and the veteran has a solid 3.47 ERA since the beginning of August. He's scheduled to start again Tuesday against a potent Houston offense.
Sep 2 2022Hutchison yielded four runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk over 5.1 innings against the Royals on Friday. He struck out five and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison allowed two runs through five innings before Michael Taylor tagged him with a two-run shot in the sixth during Detroit's victory Friday. The veteran righty had allowed two or fewer runs in three straight outings to close out August. He's now sporting a 4.06 ERA with a 53:34 K:BB through 81.2 innings this season. Hutchison is projected to face the Angels on the road next week.
Aug 28 2022Hutchison (2-7) earned the victory Sunday in Texas, striking out three in 5.1 innings while allowing two runs on four hits and three walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison cruised through the first five innings Sunday, scattering two hits and two walks while holding the Rangers scoreless. After retiring the first batter in the sixth, he allowed back-to-back homers to Corey Seager and Nathaniel Lowe and then walked a batter before being removed. It was his second win of the season and first since July 5. Over his last 10 starts, the 32-year-old has posted a 3.63 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 31:18 K:BB in 51 innings. His next start will likely be next weekend against Kansas City.
Aug 23 2022Hutchison (1-7) allowed just one run on four hits across five innings but took the loss Tuesday against the Giants. He walked two and struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison pitched well, but he left the game with the Tigers trailing 1-0 against San Francisco ace Carlos Rodon, and then Daniel Norris allowed two more runs to score as the Giants would go on to win 3-1. Hutchison has allowed one run in his last two outings, though neither resulted in a win, and the righty is in fact winless since July 5. He's pitched decently with a 4.06 ERA this season, but Detroit's offense isn't doing any favors to the pitching staff. Hutchison will look to end his winless streak in his next scheduled start Sunday against the Rangers.
Aug 15 2022Hutchison allowed one run on seven hits and one walk while striking out four over 5.1 innings in Game 1 of Monday's doubleheader against the Guardians. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison dealt with plenty of traffic on the bases, but he tossed four scoreless frames to begin his start before allowing an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. The right-hander had suffered two consecutive losses entering Monday's start, but he's been keeping his team in the game of late, surrendering three or fewer runs in four straight outings, which Monday's appearance.
Aug 10 2022Hutchison (1-6) allowed three runs on eight hits across five innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Guardians. He walked one and struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison allowed three runs across the first two innings but then settled down to fire three scoreless frames before exiting. However, the Tigers mustered only two runs against Cleveland starter Aaron Civale and six relievers. Hutchison has pitched decently with a 4.45 ERA, though his record reflects the small margin of error any Detroit pitcher has right now with a struggling offense behind them. The veteran righty is scheduled to take the hill again Monday against this same Cleveland squad.
Aug 4 2022Hutchison (1-5) allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits and three walks while striking out three over six innings, taking the loss Thursday versus the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison suffered an ankle injury in his previous start, but he was able to move past it. He had trouble with Brandon Lowe in this outing, as the Rays' infielder took him deep in the third inning and added an RBI single in the fourth, which was enough to hand Hutchison the loss. The 31-year-old right-hander trimmed his ERA to 4.37 with a 1.44 WHIP and 35:27 K:BB through 55.2 innings in 18 appearances (eight starts) this year. With the Tigers' rotation missing several starters, Hutchison is likely to get another turn next week against the Guardians.
Jul 30 2022Hutchison was removed from Saturday's start against the Blue Jays due to an ankle injury, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison was effective to begin Saturday's matchup, allowing just one run on two hits and three walks while striking out three in five innings. However, he was removed after throwing just 68 pitches and had his ankle wrapped after the game. Manager A.J. Hinch didn't sound too concerned about Hutchison's injury, so it's possible that the right-hander is cleared to make his next start. If he's able to pitch, he tentatively lines up for a home start versus the Rays next week.
Jul 25 2022Hutchison allowed four runs on six hits across 4.1 innings and did not factor into the decision in Monday's 12-4 win over the Padres. He walked two and struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Tigers scored plenty of runs, but Hutchison didn't stick around long enough to qualify for the win. He was making his first start in 10 days due to the All-Star break, so the Tigers decided to give the righty the hook after 80 pitches. Hutchison hasn't been overly impressive with a 4.84 ERA and 1.43 WHIP across 44.2 innings this season, but Detroit doesn't have a ton of other healthy rotation options at the moment, so he should stick around for now. Hutchison is slated to start again Saturday against the Blue Jays, who he made his MLB debut with back in 2012.
Jul 23 2022Hutchison will start Monday against the Padres, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison was initially listed as the probable starter for Sunday's game against the Twins, but he'll be pushed back a day since Rony Garcia (shoulder) will return from the injured list to start Sunday. Hutchison posted a 4.38 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 24.2 innings over his five starts leading up to the All-Star break.
Jul 15 2022Hutchison allowed four runs on six hits and two walks over five innings in Friday's loss to Cleveland. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison got off to a rough start by coughing up three runs in the first inning Friday. He tossed a pair of shutout frames before Cleveland tacked on another run in the fourth. It was his first time allowing more than three runs in an outing since May 8, raising his season ERA to 4.46 in the process. In five starts this year, Hutchison is 1-1 with a 4.38 ERA through 24.2 innings.
Jul 10 2022Hutchison allowed two runs on five hits across six innings but did not factor into the decision in Sunday's loss to the White Sox. He walked one and struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison pitched well, but the Tigers mustered just two runs and the White Sox rallied late for a 4-2 win. The righty has logged consecutive encouraging outings, allowing just three earned runs over 11 innings. He has only five strikeouts in that span, however, and his lack of overpowering stuff limits his upside. Hutchison is looking good at the moment either way, and the veteran should stick in the rotation for now. He's slated to start again Friday against the Guardians, which should be his last appearance before the All-Star break.
Jul 8 2022Hutchison is slated to start Sunday's series finale with the White Sox in Chicago, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Currently in the midst of his third stint of the campaign with the big club, Hutchison will receive a second turn through the rotation this week after he made his third start of the season with Detroit on Tuesday. He claimed his first win in the Tigers' 11-4 victory over the Guardians, working five innings and striking out two while allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and no walks. Hutchison should stick in the rotation through the All-Star break, though he'll be at risk of losing his spot as soon as the Tigers get any of their missing starting pitchers back from the injured list.
Jul 5 2022Hutchison (1-4) allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits across five innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Guardians. He had no walks and struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison had his contract selected from Triple-A Toledo earlier in the day, and he gave the Tigers a nice start in his first appearance in the majors since June 19. The veteran lowered his ERA to 4.30 and could stick in the rotation moving forward with Rony Garcia (shoulder) hitting the injured list over the weekend. Hutchison is currently slated to start again Sunday against the White Sox.
Jul 4 2022Hutchison is set to start Tuesday's game against the Guardians, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison became a free agent after being designated for assignment by the Tigers in June, but he is set to rejoin both the club and Detroit's starting rotation. Per Jason Beck of MLB.com, Hutchison will remain in the Tigers' rotation at least until the All-Star break, so he figures to make at least a few starts in his latest stint with the team.
Jun 22 2022Hutchison cleared waivers and elected free agency Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison was designated for assignment by the Tigers on Sunday and will choose to seek out other opportunities as a free agent rather than reporting to Triple-A Toledo. The 31-year-old made 12 appearances (two starts) in the majors this year and posted a 4.81 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in 24.1 innings.
Jun 19 2022Hutchison was designated for assignment by the Tigers on Sunday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison made his second major-league start of the season Sunday against the Rangers and allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out one in 4.2 innings. He didn't factor into the decision but will lose his spot on the 40-man roster following the start. Over 12 appearances (two starts) in 2022, the right-hander has posted a 4.81 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in 24.1 innings.
Jun 16 2022Hutchison is listed as the Tigers' scheduled starting pitcher for Sunday's home game against the Rangers, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison entered the rotation Tuesday as a replacement for Elvin Rodriguez, who was demoted to Triple-A Toledo. The veteran right-hander wasn't overly impressive in a losing effort against the White Sox -- he gave up two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out one over four innings -- but the Tigers' lack of healthy alternatives will allow Hutchison to make at least one more turn through the rotation. Hutchison will be in danger of losing out on a starting role as soon as one of Michael Pineda (finger), Matt Manning (biceps) or Eduardo Rodriguez (personal) is activated.
Jun 14 2022Hutchison (0-4) allowed two runs on five hits across four innings to take the loss Tuesday against the White Sox. He walked two and struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his first start of the season, Hutchison wasn't dominant, though he did enough to keep his team in the game through four innings. The righty lowered his ERA to 4.58, and with the Tigers missing so many starters right now, he could stick in the rotation for a little bit. Hutchison is currently lined up to start again Sunday against the Rangers.
Jun 13 2022The Tigers selected Hutchison's contract from Triple-A Toledo on Monday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison last appeared for Detroit on May 10, tossing a scoreless frame against Oakland. He was then designated for assignment, but later rejoined the club on a minor-league deal. Hutchison figures to serve as bullpen depth while with the Tigers.
May 13 2022Hutchison cleared waivers and elected to become a free agency Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison was designated for assignment earlier this week and will head to free agency rather than Triple-A Toledo. The right-hander appeared in 10 games for Detroit this season and had a 4.60 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 15:12 K:BB over 15.2 innings.
May 10 2022Hutchison was designated for assignment following Tuesday's doubleheader against the A's. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison delivered a scoreless frame during Game 1 of the twin bill but will now lose his spot on the 40-man roster. He has a 4.60 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 15:12 K:BB across 15.2 innings this year.
May 8 2022Hutchison (0-3) allowed four runs on two hits across two innings to take the loss Sunday against the Astros. He walked two and struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Outside of the strikeouts, it was a poor outing for Hutchison, who has allowed six earned runs across his last two appearances (three innings pitched). The righty has seen his ERA climb from 1.54 to 4.91 as a result. Considering the 31-year-old has a career 4.97 ERA, it's not too surprising to see his early-season success come to an end. Hutchison shouldn't have a ton of fantasy value the rest of the way.
May 1 2022Hutchison tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts in Sunday's loss to the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison continued his strong start to the season, as he now has a 1.54 ERA and 10 strikeouts across 11.2 innings. The former starter is looking like a solid bullpen find for the Tigers, as he posted a 2.11 ERA across 21.1 innings last year. Hutchison will likely easily surpass his 2021 innings total if he stays healthy, though his fantasy value remains limited due to his lower-leverage role.
Apr 16 2022Hutchison pitched three scoreless innings of relief in Saturday's loss to the Royals. He allowed one hit and one walk while striking out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detroit starter Matt Manning went two innings but was pulled due to right shoulder discomfort, so Hutchinson was asked to work the middle part of the game. He did his part and kept the Tigers in the contest, but the bats didn't wake up in the 3-1 loss. Hutchison has been pretty good so far this season with a 2.57 ERA across seven innings of work. The 31-year-old should remain in a long-relief role with limited fantasy upside for now.
Apr 9 2022Hutchison allowed two hits over two scoreless innings of relief in Friday's win over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detroit starter Eduardo Rodriguez allowed three runs over four innings, and Hutchison was the first to come on in relief. He did a good job of slowing down the Chicago offense and giving his team a chance to come back and get the win. Hutchison has made 81 starts across seven seasons in the majors, so he has plenty of experience working multiple innings and could settle in as an important long reliever for the Tigers. That doesn't leave the righty with a ton of fantasy value, though he could vulture some wins here and there.
Apr 6 2022Hutchison's contract was selected by the Tigers on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison made nine appearances (two starts) for the Tigers in 2021 and posted a 2.11 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 21.1 innings. He'll begin the year in the Tigers' bullpen and should be available to fill in as a spot starter if needed.
Apr 5 2022The Tigers informed Hutchison on Tuesday that he'll be included in the team's Opening Day bullpen, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fellow non-roster relievers Will Vest and Jacob Barnes are also set to make the team, so Detroit will need to make corresponding transactions to clear spots on the 40-man roster for all three pitchers. Hutchison made nine appearances (two starts) for Detroit in 2021, delivering a 2.45 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 10:11 K:BB in 21.1 innings. He's expected to serve as a multi-inning option out of the bullpen, but Hutchison could end up losing his roster spot as soon as Wily Peralta is fully ramped up after he was previously delayed in spring training due to visa issues.
Apr 3 2022Hutchison is one of several pitchers still competing to fill out the back end of Detroit's bullpen to begin the regular season, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison spent most of last season with Triple-A Toledo, though he could break camp in the majors this year. Woodbery notes that six pitchers (Hutchison, Chase Anderson, Jacob Barnes, Jason Foley, Rony Garcia and Will Vest) are likely competing for five roster spots. Even if Hutchison has a larger MLB role in 2022, he likely won't be a huge fantasy factor.
Mar 22 2022Hutchison allowed three runs on five hits and a walk across two innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The strikeouts are a nice sign, but Hutchison also allowed way too many baserunners in his two frames of work. The 31-year-old could push for a rotation spot at some point this season with the Tigers, but as of now, he's likely nothing more than organizational depth after signing a minor-league deal earlier this month. Hutchison spent most of 2021 with Triple-A Toledo and figures to start this year with the Mud Hens as well.
Mar 14 2022Hutchison re-signed Monday with the Tigers on a minor-league contract. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detroit will likely give Hutchison the chance to compete for a spot in the team's Opening Day rotation, though manager AJ Hinch already acknowledged Sunday that Tyler Alexander has a leg up on the No. 5 starter's role. Hutchison spent the majority of the 2021 campaign with the Tigers' Triple-A affiliate in Toledo, though injuries at the big-league level allowed him to make nine appearances (two starts) with he parent club. Over 21.1 innings with Detroit, Hutchison went 3-1 and submitted a 2.11 ERA, but a 10:11 K:BB and a .275 BABIP point to him benefiting from some good fortune.
Nov 5 2021Hutchison elected free agency Friday after exercising his right to refuse an outright assignment to the minors. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison appeared at the major-league level this season for the first time since 2018, recording a 2.11 ERA in 21.1 innings. His underlying numbers don't come close to supporting that ERA, however, as he struck out just 11.0 percent of opposing batters while walking 12.1 percent.
Sep 8 2021Hutchison (1-1) allowed one hit and struck out one over two innings of work, picking up the win in Wednesday's 5-1 victory over the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A day after having his contract selected by the Tigers out of Triple-A Toledo, Hutchison threw up a couple of zeros in relief of Matt Manning who exited the game after a comebacker struck his left leg. The 31-year-old's future is up in the air as to if he sticks around in the majors or not, but a performance like this on incredibly short notice can't hurt his chances of remaining with the big club.
Sep 7 2021Hutchison's contract was selected from Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison was outrighted to Toledo in late August, and he gave up three runs in four innings across two minor-league appearances since then. He appeared as a starter in each of his two appearances with the Tigers in 2021 but will likely pitch out of the bullpen after Drew Carlton was sent down and Joe Jimenez (illness) was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Monday.
Aug 23 2021Hutchison was designated for assignment Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hutchison delivered a decent start Sunday against Toronto, but he'll head to waivers following Monday's transaction. Akil Baddoo (concussion) will take Hutchison's place after being reinstated from the 10-day injured list.
Aug 22 2021Hutchison allowed an unearned run on four hits and a walk with one strikeout in 4.1 innings, taking a no-decision versus Toronto on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a significant improvement on his season debut versus Cleveland last Sunday, which saw the right-hander yield six runs (two earned) in 1.2 innings. Hutchison limited the damage to Bo Bichette scoring on an error in the third inning of Sunday's contest. The 30-year-old journeyman is likely to stay in Detroit's rotation after Wily Peralta (finger) was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday. Hutchison projects to make his next start at home in a rematch with Toronto next weekend.
Aug 18 2021Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Hutchison would make a second turn through the rotation Sunday against the Blue Jays, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In an effort to limit the workloads of young starters Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal and Matt Manning down the stretch without shutting them down outright, the Tigers will employ a six-man rotation for the time being. The desire to build in an extra day of rest for the rotation members is likely a greater motivation for the Tigers than getting an extended look at Hutchison, a 30-year-old journeyman who was blasted for six runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks in 1.2 innings last weekend against Cleveland in his 2021 MLB debut. A road matchup against a Blue Jays lineup overflowing with power bats is unlikely to yield dramatically better results for Hutchison.
Aug 15 2021Hutchison (0-1) allowed six runs (two earned) on five hits across 1.2 innings to take the loss Sunday against Cleveland. He walked three and struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his first MLB appearance since 2018, Hutchison had a forgettable afternoon. He got through the first inning unscathed but allowed four hits in the second inning, including two doubles and a two-run home run by Jose Ramirez, before getting the hook. Hutchison could stick around in a six-man rotation for the Tigers, though the 30-year-old journeyman doesn't inspire a ton of confidence in fantasy. He's currently projected to start again next Sunday against Toronto, who he came up with back in 2012.
Aug 14 2021Hutchison's contract was selected rom Triple-A Toledo ahead of his start Sunday against Cleveland, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The journeyman righty has a 3.63 ERA in 17 starts for Toledo this season, but he has a 5.10 ERA in 460.1 career MLB innings. He could stick around in a six-man rotation going forward, but is unlikely to be a very useful fantasy option.
Jun 16 2018Hutchison signed a minor-league contract with the Dodgers on Saturday, Alex Freedman of the Oklahoma City Dodgers reports.Hutchison posted a 4.64 ERA and 1.59 WHIP across 21.1 innings with the Phillies earlier this season prior to being designated for assignment May 31 and subsequently rejecting his assignment to Triple-A. The 27-year-old will join Triple-A Oklahoma City and could end up in the big leagues at some point if injury issues continue to plague Los Angeles' pitching staff.
Jun 5 2018Hutchison was outrighted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday, but he rejected the assignment and will become a free agent, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.Hutchison accrued a 4.64 ERA and 1.59 WHIP with a 19:13 K:BB across 21.1 innings for the Phillies in 2018. He'll look to latch on elsewhere after spending time with Toronto, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia over the last six years.
Jun 5 2018The Phillies outrighted Hutchison to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Monday, MLB.com reports.Hutchison, who the Phillies designated for assignment last Thursday, will remain with the organization after going unclaimed off waivers. The 27-year-old is expected to either slot into the Lehigh Valley rotation or occupy a long-relief role for the affiliate after posting a 4.64 ERA and 1.59 WHIP in 21.1 innings with the Phillies before being dropped from the 40-man roster.
May 31 2018Hutchison was designated for assignment by the Nationals on Thursday, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic Philadelphia reports.Hutchison has served as the Phillies' long-reliever and made only three appearances in May, allowing seven runs on 11 hits and six walks over 10 innings. The Phillies recalled Mark Leiter to take his place in the bullpen as Hutchison will have to clear waivers before likely returning to the minors.
Apr 26 2018Hutchison threw 3.2 innings Thursday against the Diamondbacks, allowing one run on three hits and a walk while striking out five. He did not factor into the decision. With starters throwing fewer innings than ever, more and more long relievers are becoming viable fantasy options, especially in deeper leagues, but Hutchison doesn't have the talent level to be one of those players. He's in a role which will give him a decent amount of innings but he doesn't do enough with those innings to be much of a fantasy asset. His 3.27 ERA is solid, but his 4.55 FIP suggests that he's still the same unremarkable pitcher he's been since 2012.
Mar 25 2018The Phillies selected Hutchison's contract Sunday, indicating he has likely made the team's Opening Day roster, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.Though Hutchison was in contention for the Phillies' No. 5 starter role in spring training as a non-roster invitee, it appears that he'll begin the season in the bullpen as a long reliever with Ben Lively seemingly positioned for the final spot in the rotation. The right-hander last appeared in the big leagues in 2016 with the Blue Jays and Pirates, submitting a 5.25 ERA and 1.46 WHIP across 24 innings. Hutchison may have to shine in long relief in the early going if he's to maintain his spot on the roster once Jerad Eickhoff (lat) and Mark Leiter (forearm) are cleared to return from the disabled list.
Mar 20 2018Hutchison could make the Phillies as a swingman if Mark Leiter Jr. misses time with forearm soreness, MLB.com reports.Hutchison was on the fringes of the Phillies' fifth-starter battle this spring, but injuries have opened up a potential role. Jerad Eickhoff is out up to two months with a lat strain, freeing up one spot in the rotation. Leiter, who was almost certain to make the team as a long reliever, could have seized that spot, but now could be out for a time with forearm soreness. That leaves Hutchison, Ben Lively, Zach Eflin and Tom Eshelman battling for a rotation spot, with a role in long relief likely available as well. With a career 4.93 ERA in 417.2 innings, Hutchison is unlikely to be a significant fantasy asset if he makes the team, but could be worth a look in deeper leagues if he's able to win a rotation spot.
Mar 12 2018Hutchison no longer appears to be in contention for the fifth spot in the Phillies rotation after the team signed Jake Arrieta to a three-year, $75 million contract Sunday, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.Hutchison, a non-roster invitee, had been competing with Zach Eflin, Mark Leiter, Jake Thompson and Ben Lively for the No. 5 role, but the Phillies now appear set to proceed with a rotation of Aaron Nola, Arrieta, Vince Velasquez, Nick Pivetta and Jerad Eickhoff to open the season. The 27-year-old has looked good so far this spring with a 2.25 ERA and 1.00 WHIP across eight innings, so unless he requests to be released from the Phillies when spring training ends, Hutchison should have the inside track for a starting role with Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Feb 15 2018The Phillies signed Hutchison on Thursday to a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to spring training.A popular sleeper target in drafts heading into the 2015 campaign after finishing 14th in swinging-strike rate among qualified starters the season prior, Hutchison has essentially fallen off the fantasy landscape after seeing his peripheral stats take dramatic steps backward over the past three years. The lefty didn't surface in the majors at any point in 2017, pitching exclusively at Triple-A Indianapolis in the Pirates organization and submitting a 3.56 ERA (4.13 FIP) and 7.0 K/9 rate over 159.1 innings. He'll have an easier path to the majors for a Phillies organization that has fewer quality starting pitchers in the system, but assuming all of Philadelphia's top rotation candidates are healthy heading into the season, look for the 27-year-old to report to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Oct 23 2017Hutchison has elected free agency, Rob Biertempfel of TribLive.com reports.Hutchison was outrighted to Triple-A Indianapolis after clearing waivers last month, but the 27-year-old decided to test the free agent market rather than accept his minor-league assignment. He owns a 4.93 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, 8.3 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 across 417.2 career major-league innings.
Sep 15 2017Hutchison has been outrighted off the 40-man roster by the Pirates, PiratesProspects.com reports.Hutchison struck out 124 batters and recorded a 3.56 ERA over 159.1 innings for Triple-A Indianapolis. Apparently, that wasn't enough for the Pirates to want to commit to him going forward, as the 27-year-old will become a minor league free agent at the end of the season thanks to this move.
Mar 29 2017Hutchison was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. The race for the No. 5 starter role in Pittsburgh is down to Tyler Glasnow and Trevor Williams with Hutchison out of the picture for the time being. Hutchison gave up just six hits in his first three spring appearances (nine innings), but he was then rocked for 21 runs on 27 hits in his subsequent three starts. The 26-year-old right-hander owns a 4.93 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, 8.3 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 over 417.2 career innings at the major league level.
Mar 24 2017Hutchison surrendered six earned runs on 10 hits and two walks in 4.2 innings Thursday. He struck out two batters. After a promising spring start, Hutchison has been lit up for 12 earned runs in eight innings over his last two appearances. His recent struggles have only added to the uncertainty of the team's No. 5 starter. Hutchison, Tyler Glasnow, Steven Brault and Trevor Williams are all in the mix. It's also possible the Pirates stick with a four-man rotation for the first three or four weeks of 2017.
Mar 18 2017Hutchison allowed six earned runs in 3.1 innings Friday. He gave up seven hits and two walks while striking out four. The frontrunner for the final rotation spot, Hutchison came up with his worst performance of the spring. Still, he remains the probable favorite if he can bounce back next time out. Steven Brault (1.00 ERA in nine innings) is his main competition and while Brault would give Pittsburgh its only left-handed starter, the team is paying Hutchison $2.3 million. Tyler Glasnow has likely pitched himself out of the running with a lackluster spring.
Mar 11 2017Hutchison allowed one run in four innings Friday against Tampa Bay. He struck out five while giving up three hits and two walks. "I saw Drew hit spots," manager Clint Hurdle told DK Pittsburgh Sports. "That's the guy that we've seen have some success. He's a strike-thrower and he moves the ball around the zone."Hutchison likely has become the frontrunner for the team's No. 5 spot in the rotation over Tyler Glasnow, Steven Brault and Trevor Williams. He's whiffed nine batters in nine spring innings, permitting two earned runs on six hits and three walks. Hutchison isn't overpowering but spots his pitches. "It's 88, 91, 92 (mph), tops," Hurdle said. "But he knows how to pitch. He had some angles to his pitches and some finish to his slider."
Mar 3 2017Hutchison struck out four batters in three scoreless innings Friday. He allowed just one hit and one walk.He threw well, but it's important to keep in mind he faced a Baltimore lineup composed of backups. Nevertheless, the three clean innings are a welcomed sight for Pirates' management, which has heavily promoted him since last summer. Hutchison may have created some distance between himself and Tyler Glasnow, who struggled Friday, in the race for the fifth starter's spot.
Feb 24 2017The Pirates are working to improve Hutchison's delivery, a move which the team believes would add velocity to the right-hander's fastball, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.Hutchison is working on a more direct stride to home plate, something he did successfully early in his career with Toronto. "We're not out of the woods yet, but we're in a really good spot and we're building," pitching coach Ray Searage said. "He feels comfortable. It puts his arm in the best position to maximize his velocity (92.0 mph avg). With that adjustment to his delivery, he's able to get the fastball down and away instead of over the middle of the plate." GM Neal Huntington also commented that Hutchison is one of two pitchers in the early lead for the fifth starter's spot. "A couple of guys are probably ahead of others - Hutchison, in terms of the experience he has; Tyler Glasnow, in terms of the ceiling he has," Huntington noted.
Feb 15 2017Hutchison will battle Steven Brault, Trevor Williams and Tyler Glasnow for the No. 5 spot in the rotation, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.GM Neal Huntington went out of his way to compliment Hutchison after the team acquired the 26-year-old for Francisco Liriano and two prospects at last year's trade deadline. As a result, the former Toronto hurler will get every chance to prove his worth. He struggled in six games with the Bucs late last year and compiled a 4.50 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 36 innings for Triple-A Indianapolis.
Jan 12 2017Hutchison agreed to a one-year, $2.3 million deal with the Pirates on Thursday, avoiding arbitration, Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports.Hutchison came over to the Pirates in an August trade that sent a pair of prospects up to Toronto. He struggled during his September stint with the Pirates, allowing seven runs in 11.1 innings. That said, he should slot in towards the back of the Pirates' rotation this season, and the fact that he's still just 26 years old suggests that he still has the potential to turn into a quality starter.
Sep 11 2016Hutchison allowed four runs on eight hits, struck out three and walked none over four innings during a no-decision versus the Reds on Saturday. The 25-year-old was cruising along in his Pirates debut, but his outing unraveled in the fourth when he yielded four runs on five hits and a hit batsman in the frame. Prior to that, he had retired nine of 12 batters. Hutchison received this start because Pittsburgh wanted to skip Jameson Tallion and Chad Kuhl in the rotation in an effort to limit their innings. It's unclear whether Hutchison will get another chance on the mound with the Pirates this season.
Sep 8 2016Hutchison is scheduled to start Saturday's game against the Reds, Stephen J. Nesbitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.Hutchison will fill in for Chad Kuhl this weekend, whose most recent start ended after giving up three runs in just two innings. The 26-year-old's stats with Triple-A Indianapolis certainly don't jump off the page, but he did post two quality starts as a member of the Blue Jays earlier in the season, so he could be a decent streaming option against a Cincinnati offense that lies in the bottom third of most hitting categories as a team. That being said, it's unclear if the Pirates plan to have him stay in the rotation for very long, so his usefulness could expire after this upcoming start.
Sep 6 2016Hutchison was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday, Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. The 26-year-old did not fare particularly well upon arrival to Indy from Triple-A Buffalo, posting a 4.50 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in seven appearances (six starts). Hutchison may make a spot start or two down the stretch and will likely compete for a spot in the rotation in spring training, but he is not scheduled to start a game for Pittsburgh in the immediate future.
Aug 3 2016Hutchison was officially assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis.Hutchison will make his debut with Indy on Wednesday, two days after being acquired from the Blue Jays. The 25-year-old right-hander went 6-5 with a 3.26 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 110:35 K:BB in 18 starts for the Jays' Triple-A Buffalo affiliate, and would seem to a chance to pitch out of the major league rotation before the end of the year. However, GM Neal Huntington was non-committal when addressing the situation earlier in the week, saying only that the Pirates will "plug [Hutchison] into future rotations."
Jul 7 2016Hutchison (1-0) pitched six quality innings, allowing three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out seven in Thursday's game against the Tigers. He did not factor in the decision.Hutchison made the most of his second spot start this season, notching his first quality outing since August 29 of last season -- ironically, that game was also against the Tigers. In his two starts this season, the 25-year-old right-hander has a 3.86 ERA with 12 strikeouts over 11.2 innings. From 2013-2015, Hutchison started 71 games and will likely be called upon to make a fair amount of starts during the second half of the season.
Jul 6 2016Hutchison is scheduled to start Thursday's game against the Tigers. He was recently recalled, and was expected to start a game prior to the All-Star break, and now the team is listing him as the probable starter for Thursday. Hutchison has a 2.78 ERA and 97 strikeouts in 87.1 innings at Triple-A this year, but his career 4.92 ERA in 400.1 big league innings should scare some potential owners away for now. However, if he can pitch well, the Jays will have opportunities for him to continue getting starts in the second half, as Aaron Sanchez and Marcus Stroman can hardly be relied on for 200 innings.
Jul 2 2016Hutchison has been called up prior to Saturday's game against Cleveland, Blue Jays play-by-play announcer Mike Wilner reports. It was reported Friday morning that Hutchison would not be joining the team until after the All-Star Break, but Friday's 19-inning game with the Indians seemed to change things. Hutchison has posted a 6-3 record with Triple-A Buffalo, sporting a 2.78 ERA with a 1.06 WHIP during 87.1 innings of work. With the Blue Jays bullpen tired out from Friday's contest, the 25-year-old could see some action Saturday.
Jul 1 2016Hutchison will not be called up to make a spot start before the All-Star break, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet reports.Unlike many expected, Hutchison will not be recalled as the team plans to roll through the rotation as-is. This is turning in to an odd situation as the Jays have had every reason to bring Hutchison back up, but have seemed reluctant to do so.
Jun 25 2016Hutchison has a good chance of being called up in the near future, even before the team moves Aaron Sanchez to the bullpen, the Toronto Sun reports. With Marcus Stoman's immense struggles (7.59 ERA in his last seven starts), and Marco Estrada's massive workload in recent years (573 innings pitched since 2013), the left-hander is on the verge of getting called up. In 13 starts this season for Triple-A Buffalo, Hutchison has compiled a 2.87 ERA, averaging better than a strikeout per inning, along with a 1.09 WHIP.
Jun 15 2016Hutchison will eventually get a rotation spot with the Blue Jays once Aaron Sanchez moves to the bullpen, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports.Manager John Gibbons has reiterated that Sanchez will make the move to the bullpen later this season, which will then open up a spot in the rotation for Hutchison, and that the move will likely be made after the all-star break. Hutchison is 3-3 with a 3.12 ERA and 1.11 WHIP through 12 starts at the Triple-A level this season. If he is effective when recalled, he could bring some quality fantasy value due to his ability to strike batters out (7.94 K/9) and the fact that he will be backed by an explosive Toronto lineup.
Apr 25 2016Hutchison showed flashes of dominance for the Blue Jays on Sunday, going 5 2/3 innings and giving up a pair of runs while striking out five in Toronto's 6-3 victory over Oakland. He was sent back to Triple-A following the game. The 25-year-old was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to make a spot start and give Toronto's starters an extra day of rest, and he received tons of praise for his effort. Although he was sent back to the minors after the game, the right-hander will likely be back soon. Having Hutchison allows the Blue Jays to monitor the innings and health of their starting rotation, in anticipation of another run toward the postseason. While manager John Gibbons has expressed a six-man rotation is not something the team will use, he conveyed that Hutchison provides the luxury of having a Major League-caliber starter waiting in the wings if necessary.
Apr 23 2016Hutchison will be sent down following his start Sunday against Oakland, Blue Jays play-by-play announcer Mike Wilner reports. It was announced Friday that Hutchison would come up for the start Sunday after starting the season at Triple-A Buffalo, but that will be his only appearance on his short stint. Hutchison has plenty of starting experience at the big league level, but the Blue Jays rotation appears to be cemented for now. The 25-year-old right-hander will likely be back up with the Blue Jays again this season, but it's unclear if it will only be as an occasional spot starter.
Apr 22 2016Hutchison will be promoted and start for the Blue Jays on Sunday, John Hickey of Bay Area News reports.Hutchison opened the season with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, where he has a record a 0-1 record with a 4.11 ERA and 20 strikeouts through three starts. The 25-year-old was the Blue Jays' Opening Day starter in 2015 and posted a 13-5 record with a 5.57 ERA last year, but failed to make the rotation out of Spring Training this season. The The Blue Jays are going through a stretch in which they play 29 games in 30 days and bringing Hutchison on as a sixth starter will give the remaining members of the rotation some much-needed rest.
Apr 21 2016The Blue Jays are thinking of temporarily adding a sixth starter, a role Hutchison would likely be called on to fill, MLB.com reports.Adding Hutchison would buy an extra day of rest for each starter and help the club get through its current stretch of 29 games in 30 days. The idea of using a sixth starter is not new. Toronto took a similar approach last season when right-hander Scott Copeland was promoted from the Minor Leagues for the same reason. Through three starts at AAA Buffalo, Hutchison is 0-1 with a 4.11 ERA and 20 strikeouts through 15.1 innings.
Mar 28 2016The Blue Jays optioned Hutchison (head) to Triple-A Buffalo on Monday.Hutchison made a run at a starting spot with the big club by posting a 3.26 ERA in six spring outings, but there simply was not enough room for him in the rotation. The Blue Jays do want him to continue starting, though, so they sent him to Buffalo to work in that role. He started 71 games for the Blue Jays over the last three seasons, so there is a good chance he joins the rotation at some point this season.
Mar 27 2016Hutchison exited Sunday's spring training game after he was struck in the back of the head by a catcher attempting to throw out a baserunner, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Hutchison was able to stand up on his own power and appeared to want to stay in the game, but was pulled after further discussion. He'll likely be evaluated further in order for the team to be certain he is entirely free of concussion symptoms. Until further notice, Hutchison should be considered day-to-day in advance of his next spring start -- an important one, as he continues to battle for the Jays' fifth starter job.
Mar 17 2016Hutchison will likely begin the season as the Opening Day starter at Triple-A Buffalo, Sportsnet reports.Aaron Sanchez and Gavin Floyd appear to be ahead of him in the battle for the Jays' No. 5 starter job to begin the season. Hutchison has allowed six runs -- five earned -- on nine hits with an 8:3 K:BB in 11.1 innings in Grapefruit League play this spring. Even if Hutchison opens the year at Buffalo, it's reasonable to think that he'll be the first starter recalled when the need arises with the big club.
Jan 15 2016Hutchison agreed to a one-year, $2.2 million deal with the Blue Jays on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith reports. As things stand, Hutchison will be competing with Jesse Chavez for the final spot in the Blue Jays rotation in spring training. A popular breakout candidate in 2015, Hutchison was abjectly bad in almost every sense, posting a 19.4% K-rate -- his lowest mark since 2012, and a 4.42 FIP. Even if he gets luckier than he did last year (5.57 ERA), it's buyer beware until Hutchison can tap into his potential for a prolonged stretch of starts.
Sep 30 2015Hutchison will start Thursday's game against the Orioles, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports.David Price is being pushed back to line him up for Game 1 of the ALDS, affording Hutchison another starting opportunity. While he is 13-4 on the year, Hutchison has struggled mightily throughout the season (5.33 ERA, 1.46 WHIP), and he made just one appearance out of the bullpen (11 pitches) after being bumped from the rotation following his Sept. 9 start.
Sep 15 2015Hutchison will pitch out of the bullpen moving forward, Sportsnet's Barry Davis reports.Hutchison gave up six earned runs in both starts he made this month, so the Blue Jays made the decision to remove him from the rotation and keep Marcus Stroman in it. Hutchison could be used for a spot start if needed, but fantasy owners will not be able to count on him taking the ball every five days the rest of the way.
Sep 9 2015Hutchison (13-4) was rocked for six runs on six hits and two walks in just 3.1 innings against the Red Sox on Wednesday.Hutchison may have a shiny record, but it's come alongside horrendous ratios, and they've only been getting worse recently. Over 8.1 innings in his last two starts, he's given up 12 runs on 15 hits (five homers) and a pair of walks. His BABIP and strand rate look like they have some bad luck to them, though, as his 4.25 FIP and 4.11 xFIP are well lower than his 5.33 ERA. Of course, those are still below-average numbers, and they come alongside a strikeout rate hat's fallen precipitously from last season.
Sep 4 2015Hutchison was rocked for six runs on nine hits, he did not walk a batter and struck out two over five innings of a 10-2 loss to the Orioles on Friday night.Hutchison (13-3, 5.07 ERA) was impressive in his first start after returning from Triple-A Buffalo, but he was again too hittable in this one, serving up three more home runs. The 13 wins are great, but he has relied far too heavily on the Jays offense as the 5.07 ERA would suggest.
Aug 29 2015Hutchison won his 13th game of the season Saturday, giving up just one run on six hits over seven innings while striking out seven without walking a batter.En route to a 15-1 rout of the Tigers, the Blue Jays scored three runs in the first inning and only failed to plate at least one run in two of their eight turns at bat, so Hutchison was on cruise control almost out of the gate. His next start, Friday against the Orioles, is also at home, where Hutchison is now 11-1 with a 2.46 ERA in 14 starts on the season.
Aug 28 2015Hutchison was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo following Friday's game.He will start for the Blue Jays at home on Saturday against Buck Farmer and the Tigers. Hutchison has a sparkling 2.57 ERA in 80.2 innings at home and the Blue Jays' offense should provide above average run support for the 25-year-old righty over the rest of the season.
Aug 24 2015Hutchison took the loss for Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday, giving up two earned runs across four innings while striking out four and walking three.Hutchison was on a pitch count of 70-75 and could only make it through four innings before throwing his 71st and final pitch. His performances in Triple-A likely won't have a real bearing on whether or not he gets called back up as he's still on track to return to the majors on August 29 when the Jays need a fifth starter again.
Aug 17 2015Hutchison was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo on Monday to continue pitching on regular rest, Shi Davidi of SportsNet reports. With the Blue Jays playing only eight games over the next 10 days, they won't need a fifth starter until Aug. 29. With an interleague series against the Phillies upcoming, the Jays brought up Matt Hague and Ezequiel Carrera to give them more pinch-hitting options. Hutchison is coming off one of his best starts of the season, having thrown 6.2 innings of one-run ball Sunday against the Yankees, but he appears set to make his next two starts in the minors.
Aug 16 2015Hutchison allowed one run on three hits and a walk in 6.2 innings Sunday with five strikeouts in a win against the Yankees to improve to 12-2.Hutchison has a stark home/road split this season. Away from Toronto, he has a 9.00 ERA with a 1.76 HR/9 and a .372 BAA. At home, he has a 2.57 ERA with a 0.56 HR/9 and a .226 BAA. His only blemish Sunday came on a solo home run. Only one other runner made it as far as second base.
Aug 5 2015Hutchison (10-2) gave up seven runs -- three earned -- on seven hits and two walks while striking out five in five innings Wednesday against the Twins.Hutchison has allowed an AL-high 81 runs and hasn't reached the seventh inning since June 6 against Houston. Despite a 5.42 ERA, he picked up his 10th win of the season. He's been kind of lucky though, as he receives more than eight runs of support per game.
Aug 1 2015Hutchison didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 7-6 win over the Royals after giving up four runs (three earned) over five innings.Touted by many heading into the season as a potential breakout candidate after ranking among the league leaders in strikeout rate during the second half of 2014, Hutchison has delivered nothing but headaches to fantasy owners. His 9-2 record belies what has been a highly inconsistent performance, and one that shows no obvious signs of improvement to come. Hutchison hasn't recorded a quality start since June 6 and has seen his ERA climb from 4.91 to 5.42 during that time.
Jul 26 2015Hutchison struggled Saturday in his return to the mound from a bout of the flu, coughing up six runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out four.Fortunately for Hutchison, Toronto's offense was doing even more damage to Mariners pitching and he was able to escape with a no-decision. Despite a bloated 5.42 ERA Hutchison's rotation spot doesn't seem to be in jeopardy, and his next start will come at home Friday against the Royals.
Jul 25 2015Hutchison (illness) has been confirmed as Saturday's starter against Seattle.A case of the flu pushed Hutchison's scheduled start back two days, but he'll be on the mound for Saturday's game against the Mariners. In his last start, Hutchison snapped a streak of six straight outings without a quality start as he allowed two earned runs over six innings of work to notch his ninth win of the season.
Jul 24 2015Hutchison (illness) has been scratched from Friday's start against the Mariners. An illness forced Hutchison's scheduled start on Thursday to be pushed back to Friday, but it seems he's still not feeling well enough to take the mound for the series opener against the Mariners. Marco Estrada will take Hutchison's spot Friday with Hutchison likely taking the mound Saturday if the flu-like symptoms subside.
Jul 24 2015Hutchison (illness) will start Saturday against the Mariners, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.Manager John Gibbons said Hutchison took a turn for the worse Friday, resulting in his scratch from the series opener against Seattle. The skipper seems confident that Hutchison will be fine to toe the rubber Saturday, but it would be wise to confirm his presence on the lineup card before deploying him.
Jul 23 2015Hutchison (illness) is expected to start Friday or Saturday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet reports.Hutchison was scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday due to flu-like symptoms, but manager John Gibbons confirmed that Hutchison is feeling better as of Thursday morning. Whether he starts Friday or Saturday, he'll be facing the Mariners.
Jul 23 2015Hutchison (illness) has been scratched from his scheduled start Thursday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet reports.Hutchison has been battling an illness over the last couple of days, and it will keep him off the hill Thursday. Starting in his place will be R.A. Dickey, who has been bumped up from Friday. The Blue Jays have not stated when they expect Hutchison back in the rotation.
Jul 22 2015Hutchison is questionable for Thursday's start due to flu-like symptoms, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports.Hutchison registered his first quality start since early June in his last outing, allowing two earned runs over six innings on Friday. Given that the Blue Jays had an off-day at the beginning of the week, R.A Dickey could pitch on regular rest Thursday if Hutchison is unable to take the mound.
Jul 17 2015Hutchison turned in a solid performance, allowing two runs on five hits, walking two and striking out three over six innings of a 6-2 win against Tampa Bay on Friday night.Hutchison (9-2, 5.19 ERA) has suffered through a disappointing season in every category except wins, as the Toronto offense typically gives a chance to notch a win any time he can make it through five innings. This was an encouraging outing, albeit not especially efficient as he needed 85 pitches (just 57 for strikes), but he will hope to build on this one as he looks to improve over the second half.
Jul 8 2015Hutchison pitched five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking two Wednesday against the White Sox.Hutchison, who has received the most run support in baseball, left the game with a 6-4 lead but failed to get his ninth victory as the Blue Jay relievers failed to hold on to the lead. For the season, Hutchison has an 8-2 record despite a 5.33 ERA and 1.49 WHIP.
Jul 3 2015Hutchison allowed seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits, walking two and striking out four while lasting just 4.2 innings in an 8-6 loss to Detroit on Friday night.Hutchison (8-2, 5.23 ERA) had yet another rough outing against a potent Tigers' lineup. The eight wins look good, but the 5.23 ERA is more indicative of the way his season has been going. The Blue Jays' bats are capable of overcoming a lot - in fact they nearly got Hutchison off the hook in this one after falling behind 8-0 - but he is going to have to start fooling hitters if he is going to be a viable option in most fantasy leagues.
Jun 28 2015Hutchison was charged with one unearned run in 5.2 innings Sunday, striking out eight while walking three batters in a 3-2 win over the Rangers. The right-hander shut down the Rangers' lineup throughout the contest, allowing just four hits (all singles) before being removed with two outs and the bases loaded in the sixth. All eight of his strikeouts came via swinging strikes. With the win, Hutchison is now 6-1 with a 2.12 ERA at home this season. He will look to start chipping away at his 8.92 road ERA against the Tigers his next time out.
Jun 22 2015Hutchison won and moved to 7-1 Monday against Tampa Bay despite allowing three runs on nine hits over five innings.Hutchison struck out six and walked two and was getting singled to death, as he gave up only one extra-base hit, a Jake Elmore double. Hutchison is getting absurd run support from the Blue Jays this season, as his club was scoring a league-leading 7.5 runs per game behind him before scoring another eight in Monday's win. No qualified starter had more than 5.8 runs per game behind him in 2014, and although the Blue Jays lineup is on fire lately, even they are scoring two fewer runs per game on average. Hutchison has a 5.33 ERA and has been mediocre despite his great record.
Jun 17 2015Hutchison improved to 6-1 with 5.2 shutout innings Wednesday against the Mets, striking out five while allowing just four hits and a walk. After an eight-run disaster in Boston his last time out, this outing feels like solid gold for Hutchison's embattled fantasy owners. The 24-year-old righty has legitimate strikeout ability and solid control, but he's a flyball pitcher in a ballpark that doesn't play well to his pitching style. He draws a weak Tampa offense Monday, but the Rays have hit him well historically, so tread with caution.
Jun 12 2015Hutchison was torched for eight runs on nine hits' walking three and striking out three while recording just seven outs, but escaped with a no- decision in Toronto's 13-10 win over Boston on Friday night. The horrible outing, including three home runs, ballooned his ERA to 5.75, but the explosive Jays' offense again provided him with a ton of run support. He left trailing 8-1 but a nine-run seventh inning got him off the hook. Hutchison has alternated good and bad starts recently, so he is due for a good one next time out, but a lot of courage will be needed for most owners to plug him into their fantasy rotation.
Jun 6 2015Hutchison won his fifth game of the season Saturday, allowing just one run on six hits and a walk over 6.1 innings, striking out five. He's been alternating good outings with mediocre ones over the last few weeks, but Hutchison finally has his ERA under 5.00 for the first time since he beat the Yankees on Opening Day. He'll try to shave it down further in his next start Friday in Fenway Park.
Jun 1 2015Hutchison walked away with a no-decision after giving up four earned runs in 5.1 innings while conceding seven hits and striking out three in Sunday's 6-5 loss to the Twins.Hutchison is currently 4-1 despite holding a 5.26 ERA thanks to the third best run support in the MLB at 6.64 runs per game. After pitching a complete game shutout his last time out, Hutchison regressed to more of what has been seen of him this season. In his 11 starts, he has just four quality starts and has given up four or more earned runs six times. Fantasy owners will want to see more consistency out of the 24-year-old before deploying him in their lineups.
May 25 2015Hutchison (4-1) dominated the White Sox on Monday, pitching a four-hit shutout and striking out eight without a walk to take home a 6-0 victory. He needed just 96 pitches to complete the Maddux -- a complete-game shutout with under 100 pitches -- and Hutch threw 70 of those for strikes. Jays manager John Gibbons revealed after the game that the young hurler was dealing with a stomach bug during the start, making it that much more impressive. Although he ended up with four runs on his stat line his last time out, Hutchison has pitched well in four consecutive starts now and appears to be moving past his rough start to the year. He next gets a friendly road matchup with the Twins on Sunday.
May 20 2015Hutchison (3-1) allowed four runs on six hits and two walks over 6.2 innings Wednesday against the Angels and was stuck with his first loss of the season. He pitched into the seventh with a quality start and the lead, but put two men on base before Steve Delabar relieved him and gave up a two-run double to turn the game around. Despite the late fade, there are positives to be taken away from this outing; Hutchison is still trending in the right direction, having reined in his early-season control issues, and makes for a high-upside add in leagues where he's been cut loose. He'll get the White Sox on Monday.
May 18 2015With Todd Redmond starting Monday for the Blue Jays, Hutchison will not start two times this week as anticipated.Hutchison was expected to start Tuesday and Sunday this week, but the decision to start Redmond on Monday will push Hutchison and the rest of the Blue Jays' starters back a day, and limit Hutchison to just one start during the current scoring period. The good news is Hutchison is now lined up to start twice next week -- at home against the White Sox and on the road against the Twins.
May 9 2015Hutchison picked up his third win of the season Saturday, holding the Red Sox to one run on seven hits and a walk over five innings, striking out six.Despite his struggles this season, Hutchison has still managed a 3-0 record thanks to the Jays' offense. While his 6.69 ERA is ugly, his 29:13 K:BB ratio in 36.1 innings does suggest somewhat better days could be ahead. He'll have a tough matchup against the Astros in Houston in his next start though.
May 4 2015Hutchison was shelled again, giving up six earned across 4.1 innings while conceding eight hits and a walk in Sunday's 10-7 loss to the Indians.Hutchison is 2-0 on the season, but in his four no-decisions, he's given up at least four earned runs and hasn't pitched through five or more innings. He now sports a 7.47 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP to go with it. While he has plenty of upside, he has limited fantasy value until he can start missing bats again (he has two strikeouts in his last two starts combined) and getting batters out consistently.
Apr 28 2015Hutchison lasted only four innings Tuesday in Boston, giving up six runs on nine hits and five walks without striking a batter out. After a brilliant bounce-back game his last time out, Hutchison laid an egg pretty badly in this one despite the Jays' offense more than making up for his early struggles by scoring eight runs with him in the game. The lack of bat-missing ability in this one is concerning, but Hutchison still has a lot of strikeout upside and shouldn't be given up on except in shallower formats.
Apr 24 2015Hutchison pitched eight strong innings, giving up two runs on four hits to go along with a season-high seven strikeouts to pick up the win over the Orioles on Thursday.Hutchison (2-0) was perfect through five innings before Manny Machado drilled a first-pitch homer in the sixth. The right-hander, who failed to finish the fifth in either of his past two starts, pitched eight innings, the longest outing by a Blue Jays starter this season. Hutchison will take the mound again on Tuesday at Boston.
Apr 17 2015It was yet another frustrating night for Hutchison who allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits, walking three and striking out six over 4.2 innings of an 8-7 loss to Atlanta on Friday night.Hutchison now sports a bloated 7.20 ERA after three starts. He was spared a loss in this one, but he needed 99 pitches (65 for strikes) and didn't finish the fifth inning. Named the Jays Opening Day starter, expectations were high for the young righthander, but he has struggled to hit his spots with his fastball and slider, leading to high pitch counts and some very hard hit balls. His change-up has frequently allowed him escape further trouble, but he'll need to get his entire repertoire working to enjoy any success.
Apr 13 2015Hutchison labored through his second start, giving up seven earned runs in 4.1 innings while taking a no decision.Hutchison did manage to strike out five, so it wasn't all bad, but after such a strong start against the Yankees on Opening Day, fantasy owners would have loved to see more out of the 24-year-old. Hutchison's high strikeout rate historically should give him value even when he's not having his best day. Hutchison will look to rebound on Friday when he takes on the Braves at home.
Apr 6 2015Hutchison picked up the win on Opening Day, holding the Yankees to just one run on three hits Monday. The 24 year old made the most of his Opening Day start after beating out R.A. Dickey and Mark Buerhle for the honors, allowing just five baserunners. He'll look to build on his promising start when he faces the Orioles in Baltimore this weekend.
Mar 31 2015Hutchison will start on Opening Day against the Yankees, Sportsnet's Shi Davidi reports. As expected, Hutchison will head the Toronto rotation, getting the nod over R.A. Dickey and Mark Buehrle. Coming off a 184-strikeout season, Hutchison is looking to improve on his 4.48 ERA. He had some trouble with home runs last season but still managed to post a respectable 3.85 FIP, complementing his excellent K:BB ratio (184:60) over 184.2 innings
Mar 27 2015Hutchison could be the favorite to start Opening Day for the Blue Jays, Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith reports. It would seem that veterans R.A. Dickey and Mark Buehrle would be more likely to get the Opening Day nod, but it is Hutchison who is currently lined up to start Opening Day assuming he continues pitching on normal rest. Hutchison posted just a 4.48 ERA last season, but he did lead the team with 184 strikeouts, and has given up just two earned runs through 10 innings this spring.
Sep 26 2014Hutchison allowed two runs on five hits, walking one and striking out eight over five innings of a 4-2 win against Baltimore on Friday night.Hutchison (11-13, 4.48 ERA) finishes up his season on a winning note, tossing 58 of 88 pitches for strikes. His overall numbers, while not overwhelming, were respectable and his first year in Toronto would have to be considered a modest success. He is likely to return to the back of the Blue Jays' rotation next year.
Sep 21 2014Hutchison lasted only four innings Sunday against the Yankees, allowing five hits and two runs.Hutchison, who had six strikeouts and three walks in the losing decision, needed 94 pitches to get through the four frames. His final start this season will come Saturday at home versus Baltimore.
Sep 11 2014Hutchison struck out 10 and walked one while giving up one run on four hits over 6.1 innings against the Cubs in a winning effort Wednesday. While it has been an inconsistent season for the young right-hander (the outing lowered his ERA to 4.36), he's been pitching well recently with four consecutive quality starts under his belt. All signs point to Hutchison having a rotation spot for the Jays again in 2015, while there could be room for further growth as he continues to make up for development time that he lost to Tommy John surgery in 2013.
Sep 5 2014Hutchison turned in a quality start Friday night, allowing three runs on six hits, walking two and striking out six over six innings, but came away with no decision against the Red Sox.He needed 103 pitches (just 65 for strikes) to cover the six innings, and he was in and out of trouble much of the night. He enjoyed a good share of success early on, but has been inconsistent the last couple months.
Aug 24 2014Hutchison allowed just one run on six hits, walking two and striking out seven over six innings, but was left with a no-decision in the Jay's 2-1 loss in 10 innings to Tampa Bay on Sunday afternoon. After a couple of horrendous outings, he got back on course in this one, but the Jays' offense continued to sputter and he left trailing 1-0 after six frames. He'll hope for better support when he takes on the Yankees at the Rogers Centre in his next start.
Aug 17 2014Hutchison got through seven innings on Sunday, but was tagged for eight hits and seven runs in a 7-5 loss to the White Sox.After a horrid opening inning in which he coughed up a grand slam and a two-run homer, Hutchison settled down nicely, but the damage had already been done. The right-hander has allowed 15 hits and 13 earned runs over his last two starts (12.2 innings), and his ERA has risen from 4.39 to 4.81 as a result. Hutchison will try to bounce back next Sunday at home versus Tampa Bay.
Aug 12 2014Hutchison was knocked around for six runs on seven hits and two walks over 5.2 innings Monday in a loss to the Mariners.Seven hits over 5.2 innings isn't so bad, but four of them were for extra bases, including a Robinson Cano home run in the sixth. That makes four disastrous starts out of his last six. Over that span, Hutchison is 2-3 and couphed up 25 runs in 32 innings (7.03 ERA). He will face the White Sox on the road Sunday.
Jul 31 2014Hutchison had a mediocre start at Houston on Thursday, surrendering four runs and six hits in just three innings. He struck out a pair of batters, and did not factor in the decision.Hutchison didn't even begin the fourth inning, getting pulled after tossing 61 pitches. He's really struggled in three of his last four starts, and his ERA has risen to 4.62, the worst it's been since April 6. He'll face Baltimore at home in his next start, so proceed with caution.
Jul 26 2014Hutchison gave up two runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out seven over 6.2 innings, in a win over the Yankees on Saturday. The right-hander had given up six earned runs in back-to-back starts coming into Saturday's outing, but was able to get back in the win column against New York. Hutchison's ERA has steadily risen in each month this season, and although Saturday's performance represents a step forward, he still makes for a little more than streaming option outside of deeper AL-only leagues.
Jul 21 2014Hutchison was a disaster Monday, allowing six runs in 2.2 innings in a loss against the Red Sox.Hutchison allowed nine hits compared to just the eight outs he recorded. This was the second consecutive start in which Hutchison allowed six runs. He'll try to get back on track against the Yankees this weekend.
Jul 12 2014Hutchison suffered his sixth loss of the season Saturday, giving up six earned runs on six hits in 5.1 innings while walking a career-high five against the Rays. He also struck out seven.Following the game that was highlighted by the abundance of walks and his inability to retire batters when ahead in the count, Hutchison referred to his performance as "embarrassing". He's now 1-4 over his last five starts, a span that has seen him give up 18 runs and 15 walks in 28.1 innings. Despite the poor showing of late, the sophomore's ERA of 4.16 and WHIP of 1.30 are remarkably similar to his totals from last season (4.12 and 1.29), so the 23-year-old really hasn't been that far off his expectations this year. However, this also means that Hutchison hasn't quite turned the page at the big-league level yet, after racking up 288 strikeouts, a 2.80 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in 270 innings in the minors.
Jul 7 2014Hutchison lasted 5.2 innings Sunday against the A's, giving up three runs on eight hits and two walks, striking out four while getting the loss.It wasn't a great outing for Hutchison, but with the Jays getting shut down by Jeff Samardzija, Hutchison didn't have much of a chance.
Jul 1 2014Hutchison treated Jays fans at Rogers Centre on Canada Day, striking out a career-high 10 while giving up a single earned run on three hits in seven innings against the Brewers on Tuesday. He also retired the first 14 batters he faced in impressive fashion. The win was just his second since May 26 and brings his record back up to .500 (6-6) on the season. The Florida native brought his ERA back below 4.00 in this one (3.81) to go along with his rather pedestrian BB:K of 31:89, but the fact that he's fanned 22 and walked eight over his last four starts (24.1 innings) is certainly an encouraging sign for Hutch. He'll toss against the A's on the road in his next start Sunday.
Jun 25 2014Hutchison took the loss Wednesday against the Yankees, giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six.Hutchison allowed all four of his runs in the third inning, capped off by a Mark Teixeira two-run shot. The young right-hander can't find any consistency at home. One the road, Hutchison is sporting a 4-2 record and 2.23 ERA. In Toronto, he is 1-4 with a 8.13 ERA. Hutchison will try to turn things around at home Tuesday against the Brewers.
Jun 19 2014Hutchison lasted just 4.1 innings against the Yankees on Thursday, allowing four runs and six hits. He issued four walks and struck out three, needing 99 pitches to record 13 outs. Before this start, Hutchison had been brilliant in 60.3 innings on the road, posting a 1.79 ERA and 0.94 WHIP, with a 49:10 K:BB ratio. Conversely, he's been hit hard at home, recording an ugly 8.72 ERA and 1.89 WHIP. with an uninspiring 21:13 K:BB ratio. Overall, there's some nice upside with Hutchison, as he has good strikeout stuff for a 23-year old. He'll need to find a way to pitch better at home, however, if he's going to be an asset for fantasy owners. It will interesting to see how he fares in his next start, as he'll take on the Yankees again, this time at the Rogers Centre.
Jun 13 2014Hutchison hurled seven shutout innings, allowing six hits, no walks, and recording three strikeouts in a 4-0 win over Baltimore on Friday night. This was the good Hutchison. He has been wildly inconsistent, looking strong in this one after being chased after just three innings last time out. He's 5-4 with a respectable 3.62 ERA, but those peripherals have been built on a few great performances mixed with a few clunkers so the question owners have to ask themselves when deciding whether to include him in their rotation remains, "do ya feel lucky?"
Jun 8 2014Hutchison only lasted three innings Sunday, surrendering five runs on six hits and a walk while striking out just two in the loss to St. Louis.Hutchison also gave up two long-balls to Jhonny Peralta and Matt Carpenter. The 23-year old has been inconsistent for much of the season but still has a solid ERA of 3.96.
Jun 3 2014Hutchison turned in a terrific performance Tuesday against the Tigers, tossing seven innings of three-hit, shutout ball while fanning seven.Unfortunately, Hutchison's gem at Comerica Park ended in a no-decision as the game was deadlocked at 0-0 until the ninth when the Jays' bats went off for five runs. He was efficient, too, managing to get 70 percent (74-of-105) of his pitches across for strikes. Not counting his last start on May 26 against Tampa, the 23-year-old has been steady on the hill for the boys from up north recently, giving up just one run and three walks over three starts against Texas, Boston and Detroit (21.2 innings). He'll get the distinction of closing out the interleague series at home against the Cardinals on Sunday in his next start.
May 30 2014Hutchison's next start will be pushed back from Saturday to Tuesday, Sportsnet's Megan Robinson reports.Hutchison is not dealing with any out of the ordinary physical issues, but the Blue Jays want to try to avoid possible arm fatigue for their young hurler going forward. Rookie Marcus Stroman will take his place on the mound Saturday.
May 26 2014Hutchison was credited with a win despite his uneven performance Monday, allowing five runs in five innings of work.Hutchison allowed three home runs, walked four and failed to strike out a batter in his uninspiring start. The young lefty has been more good than bad this season, but has now allowed five or more runs in three starts this year. He'll face the Royals in his next start.
May 16 2014Hutchison was magnificent Friday night, tossing a complete game, three-hit shutout against the Rangers in Arlington. He walked one and struck out six on the evening. He out-dueled Texas ace Yu Darvish, allowing just three singles against a potent offense in an always dangerous park. Now 2-3 with a 3.64 ERA after this, his career-best outing, he'll try to keep it going against the Red Sox at Fenway Park next time out.
May 11 2014Hutchison saw his record fall to 1-3 after yielding three runs on three hits and four walks over 4.1 innings Sunday against the Angels. The four walks were a career-high for Hutchison, whose control betrayed him and ended up saddling him with his seventh straight winless start. Although the outing inflated his ERA to a mediocre 4.37 on the season, he's probably engendered enough goodwill with his previous seven turns to stick in the rotation until further notice.
May 6 2014Hutchison lasted eight innings in his longest outing of the season Tuesday, but gave up five earned runs on nine hits -- including a two-out, game-tying grand slam in the sixth -- while striking out six in a no decision against the Phillies. The good news is that he avoided his third loss of the year and only walked a single batter for the third game in a row, but one has to wonder why he was left in the game so long. The 23-year-old southpaw saw his ERA rise to 4.17 but also now sits seventh overall in AL strikeouts with 44. Hutchison will next toe the bump Sunday against the Angels.
Apr 30 2014Hutchison fell to 1-2 Wednesday night, allowing five hits, four earned runs and a walk with five strikeouts over seven innings.Hutchison had surrendered just two runs over his first six innings of work, but was victimized by Alcides Escobar, who supplied the go-ahead two-run double in the seventh inning. Hutchison will carry a 3.82 ERA and 1.27 WHIP into his next scheduled outing against the Phillies.
Apr 18 2014Hutchison worked 5.1 innings, giving up just two runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts versus the Indians Friday night.Another nice outing for Hutchison, as 3-of-4 starts here in 2014 have gone very well for the 23-year-old hurler. With now 20 innings under his belt for the campaign, Hutchison is sporting a 3.60 ERA and 10.8 K/9.
Apr 12 2014Hutchison was great Saturday, tossing six innings of shutout ball against the Orioles. He walked four while fanning five and walking two in a no decision. The 23-year-old was removed after 96 pitches by manager John Gibbons in the sixth while the game was still scoreless. The Jays' No. 2 bounced back nicely at Camden Yards after a disastrous previous outing where he was blasted for six earned runs on six hits in 3.1 innings of work against the Yankees. Look for him to continue to build momentun Friday at Cleveland.
Apr 12 2014Hutchison was great Saturday, tossing six innings of shutout ball against the Orioles. He walked four while fanning five and walking two in a no-decision.The 23-year-old was removed after 96 pitches by manager John Gibbons in the sixth while the game was still scoreless. The Jays' No. 2 bounced back nicely at Camden Yards after a disastrous previous outing where he was blasted for six earned runs on six hits in 3.1 innings against the Yankees. Look for Hutchison to continue building momentum Friday at Cleveland.
Apr 6 2014Hutchison was lit up for six runs on six hits, walking three and striking out six while lasting just 3.1 innings in a 6-4 loss to the Yankees on Sunday afternoon. The loss evens his record at 1-1 but he now sports an ugly 6.23 ERA after two starts. He has displayed reasonably good stuff, but his command has been a problem often leaving balls out over the plate even when he was in the strike zone. He has some upside, but he will need to hit his spots more consistently to be considered a fantasy asset.
Apr 1 2014Hutchison held the Rays scoreless in 5.1 innings Tuesday, giving up three hits and three walks with four strikeouts to pick up the win in his first start of the season. This was actually Hutchison's first big-league start since June 15, 2012, as he had elbow ligament replacement surgery in August 2012, so this was quite an impressive outing for the 23-year-old righty. He featured his fastball prominently (65 of his 83 pitches), sitting around 92 mph, but he wasn't very sharp with his command, and was quite fortunate to hold the Rays scoreless. He'll face another solid A.L. East opponent Sunday against the Yankees.
Mar 27 2014Hutchison won a spot in the starting rotation, and his first outing is scheduled for the Blue Jays' second regular-season game, Tuesday in Tampa Bay, CBC.ca reports. With J.A. Happ (back) on the disabled list, both Hutchison and Dustin McGowan will open 2014 in the starting rotation. Hutchison likely would have earned the final rotation spot, but Happ's injury ensures that both he and McGowan get a chance to start. Hutchison had a fantastic spring, and he was one of the Jays' better prospects before undergoing Tommy John surgery in August 2012. Completely healthy and still just 23 years old, the right-hander makes for a particularly interesting sleeper pick now that his spot in the rotation has been confirmation.
Mar 13 2014Blue Jays manager John Gibbons acknowledged Thursday that Hutchison has the inside track for a rotation spot, Sportsnet.ca reports. "Nobody's pitched better this spring than [Hutchison]," Gibbons said. "The way he's pitching he's been dominating."Gibbons has changed his tune considerably in the past two weeks, as he'd previously said Hutchison had only an "outside chance" to win the final spot. Of course, J.A. Happ's back injury had a lot to due with that. That's not to sell Hutchison short, as he has been blowing by hitters this spring. He has nine strikeouts in five innings thus far, with just three hits and one walk allowed in his two starts.
Mar 1 2014Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said that Hutchison has an "outside chance" to win the final spot in Toronto's rotation, MLB.com's Gregor Chisholm reports.Hutchison made 11 starts in 2012, posting a 4.60 ERA and 49:20 K:BB ratio in 58.2 innings, before an elbow injury cut his season short and led to Tommy John surgery. The rehab process went well, and Hutchison made it back to the minors by the end of 2013, with his arm looking as lively as ever. Still just 23 years old, he's lost some of the prospect luster but remains an interesting name to watch. The other candidates for the No. 5 rotation spot are either less talented (Esmil Rogers, Todd Redmond and Kyle Drabek) or less experienced (Marcus Stroman and Sean Nolin) than Hutchison. The phrase "outside chance" undersells Hutchison's real odds of making the rotation.
Aug 10 2013Hutchison was activated from the 60-day DL on Saturday and optioned to Triple-A Buffalo.Hutchison was roughed up for six runs over 3.2 innings in his lone rehab start at Buffalo, so he'll simply stick there and continue to look for consistency as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. He could join the big league rotation as a September call-up if he shows renewed velocity and starts to produce better results for Buffalo.
Aug 8 2013Hutchison (elbow) had his rehab assignment transferred to Triple-A Buffalo on Friday, Sportsnet's Shi Davidi reports.Hutchison didn't exactly master Double-A New Hampshire after going 0-1 with a 4.70 ERA, but his impressive control (10:2 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 7.2 innings) was at least encouraging. He could have a shot at joining the rotation in the near future if Josh Johnson's or Esmil Rogers' recent struggles continue.
Jul 30 2013Hutchison's (elbow) rehab assignment was moved up from High-A Dunedin to Double-A New Hampshire on Tuesday, Sportsnet reports. After four scoreless innings last Thursday during a rehab outing at Dunedin, Hutchison has displayed enough control to move up the next rung on the ladder. In three games at the level, he gave up one run on two hits and six walks, while striking out 12 in 8.2 innings. Nonetheless, he is unlikely to make his presence felt in the Blue Jays' rotation until the end of August at the earliest.
Jul 25 2013Hutchison (elbow) will have to improve his command before moving up from High-A Dunedin, the Blue Jays' official website reports.Hutchison has walked five batters in just 4.2 innings of work thus far, but it's probably nothing to worry about at such an early stage of his rehab. He still has a ways to go and probably won't be pitching in the major leagues before late August or September.
Jul 16 2013Hutchison (elbow) threw two innings in his first rehab appearance with High-A Dunedin on Sunday. He recorded one earned run on three walks and a hit, striking out two.Hutchison will likely need a lengthly rehab stint to get back to his old self after Tommy John surgery sidelined him last August. There is a chance he could make an appearance with the Blue Jaus before the end of the season, but the righty will have to keep his walks down and bring his velocity up before getting this opportunity.
Jul 3 2013Hutchison (elbow) is expected to begin a rehab assignment soon, the National Post reports.Hutchison has been throwing bullpen sessions and live batting practice since early June to recoup some arm strength following Tommy John surgery last August. He has a chance at reaching the majors by the end of the season but the team may elect to have him pack it in after the minor league season concludes, especially if Hutchison is struggling to regain his pre-surgery velocity.
Jun 14 2013Hutchison (elbow) threw live batting practice Friday, MLB.com reports. One of many Blue Jays pitchers coming back from Tommy John surgery, Hutchison seems pretty far along in his recovery and could begin pitching in rehab games relatively soon. He's first pitch in a simulated game Tuesday at extended spring training and should pick up his pitch counts in subsequent outings.
Mar 22 2013Hutchison (elbow) was placed on the 60-day DL on Friday.Hutchison is recovering from Tommy John surgery, so the 60-day DL was his assumed destination all along. He has an outside chance of returning this season but it's more likely he decides to wait until next spring to seriously make a bid for a roster spot.
Mar 21 2013Hutchison (elbow) is expected to throw off a mound Monday for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery in August, MLB.com's Gregor Chisholm reports.Hutchison has been limited to long tossing and playing catch thus far as he eases himself back in action. He's only slated to throw about 15 pitches in the first bullpen session and is targeting a return after the All-Star break.
Mar 4 2013Hutchison (elbow) is expected to throw off a mound in a couple weeks for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery in August, the National Post reports. The soonest Hutchison, who initially tried to rehab without having the surgery, could pitch in a game would be June or July, and right now he said he is throwing at 80 to 85 percent of his normal velocity, so any impact he could have on the Jays or on fantasy rosters is still several months away.
Feb 19 2013Hutchison (elbow) hopes to throw of a mound by the end of March, Sportsnet's Barry Davis reports.Hutchison still faces a long road to recovery after undergoing Tommy John surgery in August. It seems likely he'll head to Double-A or Triple-A once he's cleared to resume pitching.
Feb 18 2013Hutchison (elbow) threw off flat ground Monday, Sportsnet's Barry Davis reports.Hutchison is expected to miss most of the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in August, so there's probably little value in stashing him in AL-only leagues. If he does return, it's more likely he pitches at Triple-A Buffalo after skipping that level last season when several injuries to the Jays' rotation resulted in him being summoned from Double-A New Britain.
Aug 7 2012Hutchison (elbow), who had begun a throwing program towards a possible return, will instead require Tommy John surgery, the Toronto Sun reports.Hutchison left his start on June 15 with a sprained ligament in his elbow but a follow-up examination on Monday revealed the need for Tommy John surgery. He's obviously out for the remainder of this season and quite likely the better part of 2013 as a result.
Jul 25 2012Hutchison (elbow) will begin playing catch Friday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.Hutchison went 5-3 with a 4.60 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 11 starts before the injury. The 21-year-old has been shelved since June 15, and there's currently no timetable for his return to the majors.
Jul 13 2012Hutchison (elbow) is expected to resume throwing around July 23, Sportsnet's Shi Davidi reports.Don't expect the 21-year-old Hutchison to be back with the Blue Jays until late in the season, as his UCL sprain requires a fairly sizable timetable. Given Hutchison's youth, it's possible the team may elect to err on the side of caution and rest Hutchison for the remainder of the season.
Jun 26 2012Toronto has transferred Hutchison (elbow) from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL.This move will clear a roster spot for recently purchased RHP Scott Richmond from Triple-A Las Vegas.
Jun 16 2012Hutchison (elbow) will be shut down for two weeks and begin rehab work after that time, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports. The initial tests on Hutchison's elbow revealed no tear, but he could get a second opinion just to be certain. With two weeks off before rehab, Hutchison will likely be sidelined until at least the All-Star break.
Jun 16 2012Hutchison (elbow) has been placed on the 15-day DL, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. There's no word yet if Hutchison will miss more than the 15-day minimum (it seems likely given that the current diagnosis is a UCL sprain), but Robert Coello was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to provide another arm in the Jays' bullpen.
Jun 16 2012Hutchison, who left Friday's start after just nine pitches with an apparently elbow injury, will undergo further tests Saturday, according to Canoe.ca.The Jays have lost three starters in four games with Brandon Morrow and Kyle Drabek also leaving their last starts. The team will be crossing their fingers that Hutchison didn't suffer any long-term damage to his elbow Friday night.
