Jun 26 2024Keuchel didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against Texas, allowing five runs on eight hits and a walk across four innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel was acquired from the Mariners' minor-league system earlier this week and was immediately brought up for Wednesday's start. However, he had issues limiting power in his first MLB appearance of 2024, surrendering back-to-back home runs to Nathaniel Lowe and Jonah Heim in the fourth inning. While Wednesday's outing didn't do much to inspire confidence, fantasy managers should have some patience with the former Cy Young winner considering Milwaukee's proficiency in pitcher development. If Keuchel gets another start, it'd likely come during a four-game road series in Colorado early next week.
Jun 25 2024The Brewers acquired Keuchel from the Mariners on Tuesday in exchange for cash considerations, Mark Feinsand of MLB.comreports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 36-year-old joined the Mariners on a minor-league contract in early April and pitched well at Triple-A Tacoma with a 3.93 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 45:22 K:BB over 71 innings (13 starts). Milwaukee has dealt with numerous injuries to its rotation this season, and Keuchel will provide organizational depth for a depleted position group. He'll likely report to Triple-A Nashville but could quickly earn a call to the big leagues.
Apr 8 2024Keuchel, who fired five scoreless innings for Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday during which he allowed three hits and recorded three strikeouts, could be a candidate to temporarily fill the No. 5 spot in the Mariners' starting rotation, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran left-hander's Rainiers debut against the Bees certainly impressed, with Keuchel throwing 44 of 62 pitches for strikes. Drayer points out that with Emerson Hancock having been hit hard by the Brewers in Sunday's start and also showing decreased velocity compared to his early Cactus League outings, a decision could be made to skip his next turn in the rotation. The pitcher Hancock is currently filling in for, Bryan Woo (elbow), may not be fully ready to return when Seattle next needs a No. 5 starter April 16, leading to speculation Keuchel could be a candidate for a temporary promotion given there is an open spot on the 40-man roster for him as well.
Apr 2 2024Keuchel signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Tuesday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel spent last season with the Twins, posting a 5.97 ERA and 1.67 WHIP across 37.2 innings in the majors. The 36-year-old lefty will now look to get back to the majors with Seattle, but he is unlikely to make an impact if he appears for the Mariners after recording an ERA north of 5.00 in each of the past three seasons.
Oct 1 2023Keuchel was placed on the 15-day injured list Sunday with an undisclosed injury, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jorge Alcala will take Keuchel's place in the Twins' bullpen. Keuchel may not be dealing with anything serious, but given that he posted an 8.24 ERA and 1.88 WHIP in his last 19.2 innings, it makes sense that he wouldn't be in the mix for a spot on the postseason roster.
Sep 16 2023Keuchel is not currently set to take another turn through the rotation, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Rocco Baldelli told reporters Saturday that Keuchel will pitch in relief, and his first appearance in the role could come as soon as Sunday. Bailey Ober is set to enter the rotation to take Keuchel's place.
Sep 13 2023Keuchel did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks over four innings against the Rays while striking out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Most of the damage against Keuchel came in the second inning after the lefty allowed a leadoff triple to Curtis Mead to open the frame. However, the veteran would only make it through four innings while issuing multiple walks for the fifth time in seven starts this season. Keuchel had allowed two earned runs or fewer in three of his last four starts coming in, though he's now been hit with no-decisions in each of his last four outings.
Sep 8 2023Keuchel allowed two runs on three hits and two walks over five innings during Friday's win over the Mets. He struck out six and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel rebounded well after being tagged for five runs by the Rangers in his last outing. The only damage against him Friday was Francisco Lindor's two-run double in the fourth inning. Keuchel set a season high with six punchouts and now owns a 14:9 K:BB and a 4.78 ERA through 26.1 MLB frames. He's lined up to face the Rays at home next week.
Sep 2 2023Keuchel allowed five runs on five hits and one walk while striking out two batters over 3.1 innings in a no-decision against the Rangers on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Four of the five hits given up by Keuchel went for extra bases, including two-run homers by Adolis Garcia and Sam Huff. The veteran southpaw came into the contest having pitched 18 innings without surrendering a long ball on the season. Keuchel got the start after working in a piggyback role his last time out, but it's uncertain if he'll remain in the rotation moving forward. He's posted a 5.06 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 8:7 K:BB across 21.1 frames on the campaign.
Aug 29 2023Keuchel will re-enter the Twins' rotation following the demotion of Bailey Ober, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ober has struggled in the second half and the Twins have sent him down both for performance- and workload-related reasons. It provides an opportunity for Keuchel, who hasn't allowed a run in his last two appearances (one start). The veteran left-hander appears tentatively lined up to start on Sunday in Texas against the Rangers.
Aug 29 2023Keuchel will re-enter the Minnesota rotation after Bailey Ober was optioned to Triple-A St. Paul on Monday, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ober has struggled in the second half and the Twins have sent him down to the minors both for performance- and workload-related reasons. With Ober out of the picture, Keuchel -- who hasn't allowed a run in his last two appearances (one start) -- will get a longer look as the Twins' No. 5 starter. The veteran left-hander is tentatively lined up to start Sunday in Arlington against the Rangers.
Aug 28 2023Keuchel tossed five scoreless frames of long relief Sunday in the Twins' 7-6 win over the Rangers in 13 innings, striking out three while scattering five hits and two walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After starting in each of his first three appearances with Minnesota, Keuchel ended up shifting to the bullpen to close out the weekend with the Twins bringing back Joe Ryan from the injured list Saturday. Though it may not have been manager Rocco Baldelli's plan heading into Sunday's contest, Keuchel ended up piggybacking starter Bailey Ober, who tossed just four innings before being lifted for what appeared to be performance-related reasons. After Ober put the Twins in a 5-0 hole heading into the fifth inning, Keuchel stepped and kept the Rangers off the board while the Twins rallied for four runs in the sixth and one run in the ninth to send the game to extras. Baldelli has yet to comment on Keuchel's role moving forward, but it's possible the veteran lefty gets another look as a starter as part of a six-man rotation on the heels of the stellar long-relief outing.
Aug 26 2023Keuchel isn't scheduled to start either of the Twins' final two games with the Rangers this weekend but could be available out of the bullpen, Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. "There are a few different scenarios, but not really any one scenario that I'm going to sit here and announce because, frankly, I am not 100 percent sure," manager Rocco Baldelli said of Keuchel's role moving forward. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Twins will welcome Joe Ryan (groin) back from the 15-day injured list to start Saturday's game, bringing the Minnesota rotation back to full strength. After getting called up from Triple-A St. Paul earlier this month, Keuchel was expected to have only a short-term stay with the club, but he made a case for the Twins keeping him around as part of a six-man rotation. Though Keuchel failed to escape the second inning in his second start with the Twins on Aug. 11 in Philadelphia, he rebounded nicely his last time out this past Sunday versus the Pirates, carrying a perfect game through 6.1 innings while striking out three. Keuchel said that he's been throwing shorter bullpen sessions to stay prepared for a potential move to a relief role, but if he ends up going unused behind Ryan on Saturday or Bailey Ober on Sunday, it could be an indication the Twins plan to have him make a start during next week's series with the Guardians.
Aug 20 2023Keuchel (1-1) earned the win Sunday, allowing one hit and zero walks over 6.1 scoreless innings in a 2-0 victory over the Pirates. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel had not allowed a baserunner through six, then was removed with one out in the seventh after Bryan Reynolds broke up the perfect game with a double. Keuchel, making just his third start for the Twins since initially inking a minor-league deal in June, threw a season-high 85 pitches and recorded his first three strikeouts of the campaign. Prior to joining the Twins, Keuchel had recorded a 1.13 ERA over 32 innings in Triple-A, hinting that the 2015 Cy Young award winner may still have something to offer. He'll face a much stiffer test in his next projected start during a weekend series at home against the Rangers.
Aug 16 2023Keuchel's next start for the Twins will come Sunday against the Pirates, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel will get another start after being roughed up by the Phillies his last time out, but he'll be pitching on eight days' rest as the Twins take advantage of off days to push him back. Joe Ryan (groin) is slated for a rehab start this weekend, so it's possible this will be Keuchel's last chance to show he should stick around.
Aug 12 2023Keuchel (0-1) took the loss Friday, coughing up six runs on six hits and two walks over 1.2 innings in a 13-2 rout at the hands of the Phillies. He failed to strike out a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a promising first start for the Twins, Keuchel reverted back to being the pitcher who posted a 9.20 ERA in 60.1 innings last season. The 35-year-old southpaw managed to escape the first inning unscathed thanks to a double play, but the first five Phillies to come to the plate in the second reached base, including back-to-back doubles by Nick Castellanos and Bryson Stott to lead off the frame. Minnesota is hoping to get Joe Ryan (groin) back soon and the team has off days coming up Monday and Thursday which would allow it to go with a four-man rotation, but if Keuchel does make another start, it would likely come at home next weekend against the Pirates.
Aug 10 2023Keuchel is scheduled to start Friday's game in Philadelphia. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran southpaw will get at least one more turn through the Twins rotation while Joe Ryan (groin) remains on the 15-day injured list. In his Twins debut last Sunday versus the Diamondbacks, Keuchel failed to strike out a batter over five innings, but he allowed just one run on eight hits and two walks.
Aug 6 2023Keuchel allowed one run on eight hits and two walks and did not strike out a batter in five innings of work Sunday against the Diamondbacks. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The eight hits were a lot, but Keuchel managed to give up just one extra-base knock which was a Carson Kelly double to lead off the fifth. The Diamondbacks would end up scoring that inning before Keuchel's day was over after 74 pitches. The 34-year-old doesn't miss many bats but his ability to induce weak contact should keep him around so long as Joe Ryan (groin) is out. Keuchel tentatively lines up to face the Phillies on the road in his next start.
Aug 4 2023Keuchel will make his Twins debut in a start Sunday versus the Diamondbacks, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel could get a long look in the Minnesota rotation as Joe Ryan spends at least a few weeks on the IL while recovering from a lingering groin strain. It's hard to know what to expect from Keuchel as a fantasy streaming option, but the veteran left-hander had pitched to an impressive 1.13 ERA with 28 strikeouts across 32 innings (six starts) for Triple-A St. Paul since inking a minor-league contract with the Twins on June 22.
Aug 3 2023The Twins selected Keuchel's contract from Triple-A St. Paul on Thursday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel exercised the opt-out in his minor-league contract with Minnesota on Tuesday, but the Twins suddenly need him as a replacement for Joe Ryan, who has landed on the 15-day injured list because of a groin strain. Keuchel, 35, had registered a stellar 1.13 ERA in 32 innings (six starts) with St. Paul and is back in the majors for the first time since September of 2022.
Aug 1 2023Keuchel opted out of his contract with the Twins on Tuesday, Britt Ghiroli of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel signed a minor-league deal with the Twins in late June, and he will now enter the open market after failing to receive a promotion to the majors. The 35-year-old southpaw put up a 1.13 ERA and 1.25 WHIP through 32 innings over six starts with Triple-A St. Paul.
Jul 21 2023Keuchel did not exercise the Friday opt-out in his minor-league contract with the Twins, Darren Wolfson of Channel 5 Saint Paul reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There could be a second opt-out date in the deal, but he'll remain part of the Twins organization for the time being. The veteran left-hander has pitched well so far at Triple-A St. Paul, registering a 0.90 ERA and 17:8 K:BB in four starts covering 20 innings. Maybe he'll soon get a look in the Minnesota rotation.
Jul 19 2023Keuchel has the ability to opt out of his minor-league contract with the Twins on Friday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel has collected a 0.90 ERA with 17 strikeouts over 20 innings since joining the Twins' Triple-A affiliate in St. Paul. The Twins have not yet offered any hints as to whether he could be promoted soon, though. Keuchel, 35, holds a 6.35 ERA at the major-league level over the previous two seasons.
Jun 22 2023Keuchel signed a minor-league deal with the Twins on Thursday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran southpaw has not pitched since Sept. 2, 2022 as a member of the Rangers. He had an effective pandemic year in 2020, but Keuchel sports a 6.35 ERA over 222.2 innings since 2021. It's possible the Twins will turn to him later this summer as a depth starter if he is pitching well in the minors.
Sep 5 2022The Rangers released Keuchel on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: His release became official shortly after the Rangers designated him for assignment earlier Sunday. Keuchel has now been cut three times this season after posting a collective 9.20 ERA and 2.06 WHIP in 60.2 innings across 14 starts with the White Sox, Diamondbacks and Rangers. At this stage of the season, the 34-year-old lefty is unlikely to catch on elsewhere, and he'll have to settle for a minor-league deal this offseason if he intends to keep his career going in 2023.
Sep 4 2022Keuchel was designated for assignment by the Rangers on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel signed a minor-league deal with the Rangers in late July and was added to the big-league rotation a month later, and he surrendered 14 earned runs over 10 innings between his two starts. It's the same story with a different team for the veteran left-hander, who has also been DFA'd by the White Sox and Diamondbacks this season. Overall Keuchel has a 9.20 ERA, 2.06 WHIP and 45:31 K:BB across 14 starts this year, and he is unlikely to return to a big-league mound during the final month of the campaign.
Sep 2 2022Keuchel (2-9) allowed seven runs on seven hits and three walks over 4.2 innings Friday, striking out six and taking a loss against Boston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel gave up just one run through three innings before the Red Sox tacked on three in the fourth and three more in the fifth. The veteran southpaw has been tagged with 14 runs through 10 innings since joining the Rangers and his season ERA has jumped to 9.20 through 14 starts. He's projected to start in Houston next week though it's unclear if he'll get another turn in the rotation.
Aug 31 2022Keuchel is scheduled to start Thursday's series opener in Boston, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel's status as a two-time All-Star and former Cy Young Award winner may be the primary reason the 34-year-old southpaw is still receiving MLB starts at this stage of his career, as he's shown little over the past two years to suggests he's worthy of a spot in a big-league rotation. Between stops with the White Sox, Diamondbacks and Rangers this season, Keuchel has produced an 8.84 ERA and 2.05 WHIP across 13 starts spanning 56 innings. An ugly showing against the Red Sox might be enough for the Rangers to pull the plug on Keuchel and turn to another pitcher to eat innings at the back end of the rotation.
Aug 27 2022Keuchel (2-8) took the loss against Detroit on Saturday, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing seven runs on 11 hits and one walk while striking out one batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Keuchel was released by Arizona in July, Texas swooped in to sign the veteran hurler to a minor-league deal. The left-hander made his first start for his new club a month later, and the results were no better than his overall body of work this season. Keuchel fell behind by two runs in the first inning and was pulled in the sixth after having yielded seven earned runs -- the same amount he surrendered in his final start with Arizona. He has given up six or more earned runs in six of his 13 outings overall this season, so it's no surprise that his ERA is an unsightly 8.84. That's the worst mark of any major-league pitcher who has thrown at least 50 innings.
Aug 26 2022Keuchel will be called up to start Saturday against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel has already been released by both the White Sox and the Diamondbacks this season, and it's not hard to see why. In 12 starts, he's struggled to an 8.53 ERA and 2.03 WHIP while averaging 87.9 mph with his fastball. He'll make at least a spot start or two in place of the injured Cole Ragans (calf), but it's hard to see him having much success.
Jul 25 2022Keuchel signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Monday, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel will report to Triple-A Round Rock after opting for a minor-league deal. He didn't last long on the open market, as he was officially released by Arizona earlier in the day. The right-hander will attempt to prove he deserves another chance in the big leagues after posting an 8.53 ERA and 2.03 WHIP with a 38:27 K:BB over 50.2 frames earlier this season between the White Sox and Diamondbacks.
Jul 20 2022Keuchel was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel caught on with the Diamondbacks after he was DFA'd by the White Sox earlier this year, but he will once again find himself a free agent after he likely clears waivers following his removal from the 40-man roster Wednesday. The left-hander owns a 8.53 ERA and 2,03 WHIP with 38 strikeouts over 50.2 innings in 12 starts with the White Sox and Diamondbacks this season.
Jul 12 2022Keuchel (2-7) allowed eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits and a walk with four strikeouts in 4.1 innings, taking the loss Tuesday versus the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Giants set the tone early and teed off for three home runs against Keuchel. The lefty has alternated between mediocre and awful in his first four games for the Diamondbacks, and he's doing little to prove himself worthy of a spot in the rotation. Through 50.2 innings between the Diamondbacks and the White Sox, he has an 8.53 ERA, 2.03 WHIP and 38:27 K:BB. Arizona's off day Thursday likely means Keuchel won't pitch again until after the All-Star break.
Jul 7 2022Keuchel tossed seven innings against Colorado on Thursday, allowing three runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out four batters. He didn't factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel's rotation spot may have been in jeopardy after he allowed 10 earned runs over 9.1 innings in his first two starts with Arizona, but the veteran bounced back with a strong effort Thursday. He tossed a campaign-high seven innings and didn't issue any free passes for the first time since his first start of the season (as a member of the White Sox) on April 13. Keuchel had walked exactly three batters in four of his previous five outings, so his improved control Thursday was particularly notable. He still holds an ugly 7.63 ERA overall this season, but Keuchel at least demonstrated that there's some juice left in the tank with his second quality start of the campaign.
Jul 3 2022Arizona manager Torey Lovullo was noncommittal as to whether Keuchel will get another start, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel was roughed up by the Rockies on Saturday, but his final line may have looked better had a couple of plays been made behind him, one of which was not ruled an error. It's likely the left-hander remains in the rotation for at least one more start, as the Diamondbacks are down one starter after Zach Davies (shoulder) was added to the 15-day injured list.
Jul 2 2022Keuchel (2-6) allowed seven runs (six earned) on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts over five innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel didn't do that well in his first start for Arizona on June 26, and pitching at Coors Field was a tough ask for him in his encore. He got off to a rough beginning, yielding four runs, including a three-run home to Brendan Rodgers, in the first inning. Keuchel got into trouble again in the fourth, allowing a bases-clearing triple to Connor Joe. In 10 starts this year, Keuchel sports an 8.27 ERA, 2.10 WHIP and 30:26 K:BB across 41.1 innings between the Diamondbacks and the White Sox. The southpaw's spot in the rotation is far from secure, but he lines up for a home rematch with the Rockies next week if he gets another turn.
Jun 29 2022Arizona manager Torey Lovullo confirmed Tuesday that Keuchel will get another start, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This news may have been expected, but Lovullo's comments suggest Keuchel is still in an audition phase. The left-hander made his Diamondbacks' debut last Sunday, giving up four runs in 4.1 innings. The 15 swinging strikes induced were more than he registered in any of his eight starts while with the White Sox. Keuchel will likely remain in the rotation going forward, particularly after Arizona placed starter Zach Davies on the injured list with shoulder inflammation. He's expected to start Sunday in Colorado but could be moved up to take Davies' spot Saturday.
Jun 26 2022Keuchel allowed four runs on six hits and three walks and struck out seven over 4.1 innings versus the Tigers on Sunday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel showed some promise with the season-high total in strikeouts, but it was still an inefficient performance. He threw 98 pitches (55 strikes) to get 13 outs in his first outing with the Diamondbacks. For the season, he has a 2-5 record, a 7.93 ERA, 2.15 WHIP and 27:23 K:BB through 36.1 innings, which includes his first eight starts this year with the White Sox. If Keuchel remains in the majors, he's projected for a tough road start in Colorado next weekend.
Jun 22 2022Keuchel went seven innings in an outing for the Diamondbacks' affiliate in the Arizona Complex League and could make a start this weekend for Arizona, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. He allowed three runs (two earned) with one walk and struck out 13. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Arizona manager Torey Lovullo described the outing as "extremely good," while pitching coach Brent Strom marveled at the swings and misses on pitches in the zone. Beyond the veteran lefty making rookies look foolish, there are other signs that point to Keuchel joining the team's five-man rotation as soon as Saturday. Another potential candidate, Luke Weaver, who was roughed up in a start Saturday, did not throw a bullpen session Tuesday. That would have been the day to throw on a normal starter's routine. Instead, Lovullo confirmed Weaver will be available as a reliever in the coming days. The manager added the team is "targeting someone this weekend" to start against the Tigers without naming Keuchel. Adding to the speculation, Keuchel's minor-league deal includes three opt-out dates if he's not promoted, with the first coming Saturday.
Jun 15 2022Keuchel allowed four runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out four for the Diamondbacks' affiliate in the Arizona Complex League on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was Keuchel's first game action with the organization after signing a minor-league contract last week. He threw about 80 pitches and did "fairly well," Arizona pitching coach Brent Strom told Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic. The coach was pleased with the number of strikes thrown and the lefty's signature sinker; the downside was the fastball was not where Strom wanted to see it. Strom and Keuchel have history from when the two were with the Astros, and the coach will monitor the pitcher's off-day throwing session Thursday.
Jun 9 2022Keuchel is not being considered for a start Sunday in Philadelphia, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo confirmed that Keuchel is not a candidate for Sunday's spot in the rotation, adding that the left-hander was on the taxi squad in the event of issues with COVID-19. Keuchel recently signed a minor-league deal with Arizona, which gives him a chance to work with his former pitching coach Brent Strom.
Jun 6 2022Keuchel signed a minor-league contract with the Diamondbacks on Monday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel was designated for assignment and ultimately released by the White Sox in late May, but he'll now attempt to generate production within the Diamondbacks' minor-league system. The southpaw will report to Triple-A Reno after he posted a career-worst 7.88 ERA and 2.16 WHIP in 32 innings over eight starts with the White Sox to begin the season. Keuchel's agreement with the Diamondbacks reunites him with pitching coach Brent Strom, whom he worked with for five years in Houston.
May 30 2022Keuchel was placed on unconditional release waivers Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel was designated for assignment Saturday, and it looks as though the White Sox won't attempt to keep him around as organizational depth, something the veteran lefty would have the right to refuse. He'll look for work on the open market, but there's unlikely to be much interest in a 34-year-old with a 7.88 ERA and an 88.2 mph fastball.
May 28 2022Keuchel was designated for assignment by the White Sox on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel signed a three-year, $55.5 million contract with Chicago prior to the 2020 season, and while he did give the team a 1.99 ERA in the first year of his deal, it's become apparent over the last two seasons that he just doesn't have it anymore. A 5.28 ERA last year was bad enough, but that figure ballooned to 7.88 through eight starts this season as he walked as many batters as he struck out. His formerly elite groundball rate also dipped to a merely good 50.8 percent, a career low. As a 34-year-old with that sort of recent track record and a fastball that averages 88.2 mph, he's unlikely to generate much interest on the open market and is all but guaranteed not to get claimed while a team still has to take on the entirety of his remaining contract.
May 27 2022Keuchel (2-5) took the loss against Boston on Thursday, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four over two innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel's outing got off to an ominous beginning when Enrique Hernandez led off the game with a home run, and the veteran hurler went on to allow two more runs in the frame. He then served up a three-run shot to Trevor Story in the second inning and didn't make it back out to the mound for the third. Blowups like these have been a theme for Keuchel this season -- he has now given up six or more runs in three of his eight starts. He's had some decent outings as well, but it's tough to invest fantasy stock in a pitcher who has a 7.88 ERA on the season, especially when that is accompanied by an ugly 20:20 K:BB.
May 21 2022Keuchel (2-4) took the loss Saturday after he pitched four innings, giving up six runs on six hits and three walks versus the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After holding the Yankees scoreless over five innings in his last start, Keuchel got into trouble early in this one. He surrendered five runs in the second frame, including a DJ LeMahieu grand slam with two outs. He later gave up another run in the next inning. The left-hander failed to register a strikeout for the second time this year and the tough outing put an end to a strong stretch for the 34-year-old. Over his prior four starts, he had posted a 2.70 ERA over 20 innings. Keuchel has had a couple blowups this year, including Saturday, and he now has a 6.60 ERA and 2.00 WHIP with 16 punchouts over 30 innings this season.
May 20 2022Keuchel's scheduled start Friday against the Yankees was postponed due to inclement weather. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Sunday. Keuchel will start Saturday's contest, with Johnny Cueto and Michael Kopech handling the twin bill.
May 14 2022Keuchel did not factor in the decision against the White Sox on Saturday, tossing five scoreless innings and giving up four hits and three walks while striking out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel tamed a red-hot New York offense, yielding only one extra-base hit (a double by Giancarlo Stanton) and keeping the Yankees off the scoreboard for five frames. The veteran left-hander has rebounded since giving up seven earned runs in one inning against Cleveland on April 20, surrendering just six runs across 20 frames over his subsequent four starts. Keuchel is tentatively lined up to next take the mound in Kansas City on Thursday.
May 8 2022Keuchel (2-3) picked up the win Sunday against the Red Sox after allowing two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and one walk over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander walked five batters in each of his past two outings, but he showed much better control Sunday and produced his best performance of the season. Keuchel started off with five scoreless innings, but Boston was able to scratch across a pair of runs during the sixth. The 34-year-old will need more than one solid outing to get back on the fantasy radar, and he lines up for a tough matchup with the Yankees next weekend.
May 1 2022Keuchel (1-3) allowed four runs on six hits and five walks over five innings Sunday, striking out one and taking a loss against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel's poor afternoon started early when Mike Trout took him deep for a solo shot in the first inning. He then gave up a pair of runs in the third followed by one more in the fourth. He's walked 10 batters over his last two outings, giving him an unsightly 8:11 K:BB through 15 frames. Keuchel will carry an 8.40 ERA into his projected start in Boston next weekend.
Apr 26 2022Keuchel (1-2) got the loss Tuesday after he allowed two runs (zero earned) over four innings, giving up two hits and walking five while striking out two versus the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel struggled with his command in this one, throwing only 42 of his 88 pitches for a strike and walking a season-high five batters. The only damage against him came in the fourth inning when Salvador Perez and Carlos Santana scored after Perez reached base on an error to open the inning, making both runs unearned. Keuchel has had an uneven start to the season and now boasts a 9.00 ERA and 2.40 WHIP with seven strikeouts in 10 innings over three outings on the mound. He'll look to turn it around in his next projected start Sunday against the Angels.
Apr 21 2022Keuchel (1-1) allowed 10 runs (eight earned) on 10 hits and one walk with zero strikeouts across one inning to take the loss in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel was let down by his defense in the outing, as the White Sox committed three errors on the first six balls in play. However, he was hit hard thereafter, allowing eight consecutive hits in the second inning -- with the biggest being a grand slam by Jose Ramirez. It was an unequivocally disastrous effort, though it is worth noting that Keuchel had his start pushed back twice due to postponements caused by weather. He also threw better in his initial appearance of the season, when he surrendered three earned runs across five innings while striking out five against the Mariners. Given that, Keuchel should have the chance to rebound in his next turn through the rotation, which is currently projected to come Tuesday at Kansas City.
Apr 19 2022Keuchel and the White Sox won't face the Guardians on Tuesday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather in Cleveland, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As a result of the series opener being postponed for the second time in as many days, Keuchel is now set to miss out on a two-start week. The two clubs will make up Tuesday's postponement as a traditional doubleheader Wednesday, with Keuchel getting the ball for the first game of the twin bill, according to Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times. With the White Sox now scheduled to play six games in five days, the team will have to add a temporary sixth starter to the mix at some point between Wednesday and Sunday.
Apr 18 2022Keuchel and the White Sox won't play the Guardians on Monday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather in Cleveland, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The two teams plan to make up Monday's game as part of a split doubleheader July 12. As a result of the postponement, the White Sox will most likely push each of their five starters back a day in the pitching schedule. Assuming that's the case, Keuchel would still line up for a two-start week, with turns coming Tuesday in Cleveland and Sunday in Minnesota.
Apr 14 2022Keuchel (1-0) earned the win during Wednesday's 6-4 win over the Mariners after allowing three runs on six hits and striking out five without walking a batter across five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel drew his first start of the season and was solid across five frames. Ty France struck early with a home run in the first, but Keuchel was able to toss four scoreless frames before getting himself into a jam in the fifth. The crafty lefty was able to escape without too much damage and earned his first win of the season. He'll look to build off his strong start Monday, when he's tentatively scheduled to start in Cleveland.
Apr 9 2022Keuchel is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Mariners in Chicago. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel found himself outside of Chicago's streamlined ALDS rotation last fall, but he'll open the 2022 season in a starting role, taking the hill for the White Sox's fifth game. After compiling a 5.28 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 5.0 K-BB% across 162 frames in 2021 and now heading into his age-34 campaign, Keuchel's fantasy outlook is bleak, even though he may have more job security than anticipated early on in the season with Lance Lynn (knee) likely out until at least late May. Even in his prime years, Keuchel wasn't a below-average source of strikeouts, so his best hope for gaining mixed-league fantasy relevance will likely come from lowering his walk rate (8.2 percent in 2021, 7.2 percent career) and banking on his groundball-happy approach yielding better luck on balls in play (.307 BABIP in 2021, .293 career).
Oct 7 2021Keuchel was not included on the White Sox's ALDS roster. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel owns a 3.71 ERA in 63 career postseason innings, but he's clearly not the pitcher he was at his peak. He struck out just 13.2 percent of opposing batters this season (the lowest mark among qualified starters) en route to a 5.28 ERA. That's clearly not the sort of pitcher a team wants to start a playoff game, and the White Sox evidently didn't believe he offered much value as a long-relief option, either.
Sep 27 2021Keuchel (9-9) tossed five innings, surrendering two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out two on his way to a win versus the Tigers on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander gave up one run in the second inning and then a solo home run in the fifth by Jonathan Schoop accounted for the other run against him. It was the third consecutive outing in which he allowed two runs, but he has an inflated 2.00 WHIP over 16 innings in those starts. Keuchel is not lined up to pitch again before the regular season ends Sunday, finishing the 2021 campaign with an underwhelming 5.13 ERA and 1.51 WHIP over 161.1 innings.
Sep 21 2021Keuchel gave up two runs on 11 hits and a walk while striking out two across five innings during Tuesday's loss to the Tigers. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A lack of efficiency hurt Keuchel this time as he needed 95 pitches to complete five innings. Meanwhile, his 11 hits allowed were a season worst. Akil Baddoo was Keuchel's biggest enemy of the day with two RBI singles, accounting for all the damage. The lefty will bring a 5.18 ERA and 1.50 WHIP into his next projected start Sunday at Cleveland.
Sep 15 2021Keuchel allowed two earned runs on six hits and five walks while striking out three across six innings Wednesday against the Angels. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel was far from dominant, as is indicated by the 11 baserunners he allowed across only six innings. However, he got two timely double plays -- one stranded the bases loaded -- and induced 10 groundball outs to avoid significant damage. Entering this start, Keuchel had allowed five or more earned runs in four consecutive outings. That said, he'll take the positive results of this start even if his underlying skills don't match his line. Overall, Keuchel has a 5.23 ERA with a 90:55 K:BB across 151.1 innings on the season.
Sep 9 2021Keuchel (8-9) allowed five runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out three over 5.2 innings to take the loss Wednesday in Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The results weren't pretty, but Keuchel improved from his previous two outings in which he allowed 12 runs (10 earned) in four innings. There's still some work to snap out of a slump for Keuchel, who has an 9.47 ERA across 25.2 innings (six games) since Aug. 10. The results might have been better had the White Sox's offense executed with runners in scoring position (1-for-10). The left-hander is scheduled to pitch one of the three games next week against the Angels.
Sep 4 2021Keuchel (8-8) allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks over three innings Friday, striking out one batter and taking a loss against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel gave up two runs in the second inning before Kansas City piled on four more in the third. He's now given up six runs in each of his last three appearances, inflating his ERA to 5.22 through 142.2 innings. Since the start of July, the 33-year-old lefty is 2-6 with a 7.26 ERA and a 31:22 K:BB. Keuchel is projected to take the mound in Oakland next week.
Aug 27 2021Keuchel allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits and a walk in one inning versus the Cubs on Friday. He struck out one and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In what ended up being a slugfest, Keuchel gave up a three-run shot to Patrick Wisdom. The White Sox were down six runs before they got to bat, but they got Keuchel off the hook with an eight-run third inning. The southpaw has still had an ugly run lately, allowing four or more runs in five of his last seven starts. He has a 5.00 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 83:47 K:BB through 136.2 innings. The 33-year-old lines up for a road start in Kansas City during next weekend's three-game series. It's unlikely he'll pitch on short rest after a short outing given the White Sox have two off days next week. The bigger concern for Keuchel could be a challenge from Reynaldo Lopez for a rotation spot, as the latter pitched five perfect innings in relief Friday.
Aug 21 2021Keuchel (8-7) was saddled with the loss Saturday against the Rays after allowing six runs on nine hits over five innings. He struck out three batters while walking a pair. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rays jumped on Keuchel early, scoring three runs in the first inning, and things didn't get much better from there, as he escaped with just a single scoreless inning. While he did manage to keep the ball in the yard, he's now striking out just 14.1 percent of opposing batters, so he's bound to have more outings like this one where the hits just keep falling. He'll look to bounce back next week against either the Blue Jays or Cubs, depending on whether Carlos Rodon (shoulder) is able to return during the series against Toronto.
Aug 17 2021Keuchel (8-6) allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two over five innings to grab the win over Oakland on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel survived a rocky second inning in which he allowed a home run, two walks and hit a batter, then watched the bullpen nail down the win with four scoreless innings. The left-hander had thrown just 79 pitches, but manager Tony La Russa, perhaps mindful of Keuchel's 11.77 ERA in the sixth inning, had Michael Kopech, Craig Kimbrel and Liam Hendriks finish up. The win was Keuchel's first in six starts since returning from the All-Star break. He'll lug a 5.13 second-half ERA into his next start, presumed to be Saturday on the road against the Rays.
Aug 11 2021Keuchel (7-6) pitched six innings against Minnesota on Tuesday, allowing four runs on four hits and four walks while striking out one to take the loss. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw had a difficult time finding the strike zone in the contest, throwing only 54 of 102 pitches for strikes and tying a season high with four walks. He was in line for the win, however, until Willians Astudillo tagged him for a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Keuchel has gone at least six innings in four of his past six starts but has registered a 4.58 ERA while going 1-3 over that span.
Aug 5 2021Keuchel (7-5) allowed two earned runs on three hits and three walks while striking out five across six innings, taking the loss to the Royals on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel surrendered two first-inning runs on an Emmanuel Rivera double, which was enough to hand him the loss. The 33-year-old has been inconsistent over his last eight starts, with a 5.71 ERA and 30 strikeouts over 41 innings. He only has one win in that stretch. On the season, he carries a 4.44 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP in 119.2 innings. His next start is scheduled for Tuesday in Minnesota.
Jul 31 2021Keuchel allowed five runs on five hits and one walk with four strikeouts in 5.1 innings Saturday against Cleveland. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Three of the five hits against Keuchel were home runs, the second straight game in which he's served up a trio of long balls. Franmil Reyes delivered the knockout blow with an RBI double in the sixth inning that gave Cleveland a 6-4 lead. The 33-year-old Keuchel, who has yielded 11 homers over his last six starts, is 7-4 in 21 appearances this season with a 4.51 ERA and 1.35 WHIP.
Jul 27 2021Keuchel (7-4) allowed four runs on six hits and a walk while striking out three over six innings, taking the loss against Kansas City on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel was victimized by three home runs -- two by the hot-hitting Jorge Soler -- while the White Sox's offense generated only five hits. The left-hander doesn't usually give up a lot of home runs, but he's allowed at least one in his last five starts (eight in 27 innings), going 1-2 with a 5.33 ERA during that run. Keuchel's next start is expected to be come Saturday at home against Cleveland.
Jul 21 2021Keuchel allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six over five innings in a no-decision against Minnesota on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel left with a lead, but the Twins scratched out three runs off two relievers before the White Sox made their own comeback in the eighth inning. The left-hander has just one win over his last five outings and a 5.70 ERA during that run. Keuchel's next rotation turn comes due Monday on the road in Kansas City.
Jul 9 2021Keuchel (7-3) allowed one run on seven hits and one walk while striking out three in seven innings, earning the win in Friday's 12-1 win over the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A Ramon Urias home run in the second inning proved to be the only blemish in a fine performance from the veteran lefty. Keuchel needed a strong outing after yielding seven runs to Detroit in four innings his last time out. Inconsistency has plagued his season and led to a 4.25 ERA through 18 games, although impressive run support like he received Friday has fueled a sizable win total. Keuchel will make his next start after the All-Star break.
Jul 4 2021Keuchel (6-3) allowed seven runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out two over four-plus innings to take the loss against Detroit on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel navigated the first turn through the order without much noise before the Tigers jumped on him for crooked numbers in the fourth and fifth innings. This continues a gruesome three-outing stretch for the left-hander, who has a 9.26 ERA over his last 11.2 innings. He'll look to reverse the trend in his next start, tentatively scheduled for Friday at Baltimore.
Jun 27 2021Keuchel allowed two runs on six hits and one walk while pitching in relief of Lance Lynn during Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Mariners. He fanned four and did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel was initially slated to start Sunday, but with Saturday's game being suspended in the bottom of the third inning, the lefty instead relieved Lance Lynn in a scoreless tie. He was bit by the long ball, as the two runs charged to him came on solo homers by Taylor Trammell and Ty France. The White Sox were able to put two runs on the board to take Keuchel off the hook for the loss before ultimately falling 3-2. Keuchel will try again for his seventh win when he takes the ball next weekend in Detroit.
Jun 20 2021Keuchel (6-2) was tagged with the loss Sunday against the Astros after allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits and four walks across 2.2 innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel couldn't even get out of the third inning in what was his worst performance of the season -- as well as his shortest one by a wide margin. The six runs allowed tied a season-worst mark for the veteran, and the seven hits were just one short of tying the season-worst figure, too. Keuchel still owns a decent 3.98 ERA and will try to bounce back in his next start, scheduled for next week at home against the Mariners.
Jun 15 2021Keuchel (6-1) allowed four hits and one walk across seven scoreless innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel limited the Rays to one extra-base hit and allowed only two runners to reach scoring position across his seven innings of work. He's now turned in three consecutive starts in which he's worked at least six innings while not allowing more than two earned runs. The hot stretch has brought Keuchel's ERA down to 3.78, though he's still managed only 46 strikeouts across 78.2 frames.
Jun 10 2021Keuchel (5-1) earned the win Thursday against Toronto after giving up just two runs on six hits and two walks across six innings. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel has avoided the loss in each of his last seven starts, going 4-0 with four quality starts and a 25:10 K:BB over that span. The veteran has also given up two or fewer runs in three of his last four starts, and he has improved his ERA to a respectable 4.14 as a result. Keuchel is scheduled to make his upcoming start next week against the Rays at home.
Jun 5 2021Keuchel allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out three over six innings, picking up a no-decision in Friday's 9-8 win over Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel cruised through his six innings and left the game with a 7-2 lead after just 80 pitches. Chicago's 2020 bullpen could have held that lead, but the bullpen has not been the same in 2021. Codi Heuer and Evan Marshall conspired to give up six runs in the top of the seventh inning, negating what would have been Keuchel's fifth win. The left-hander is on schedule for his next start Thursday at home against the Blue Jays.
May 29 2021Keuchel (4-1) earned the win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Orioles after giving up four runs on eight hits and a walk while fanning two across five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel didn't have his best stuff in the opener of the twin bill, but he pitched well enough to outduel Matt Harvey en route to his fourth win of the campaign. The veteran has given up three or more runs in three of his five starts this month, and he's next scheduled to take the mound at home against the Tigers next week.
May 28 2021Keuchel won't pitch as scheduled Friday against the Orioles after the game was postponed due to inclement weather. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Friday's contest will be made up as part of a doubleheader Saturday. Keuchel will start Game 1 of the twin bill while Lance Lynn takes the mound during the nightcap, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports.
May 23 2021Keuchel allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out four in four innings during Sunday's loss to the Yankees. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel had picked up wins in each of his last two starts, but he was forced to settle for a somewhat unlucky no-decision Sunday. He gave up a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning and allowed three consecutive baserunners in the bottom of the fifth inning that eventually led to his removal. The southpaw has now posted a 4.28 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 54.2 innings across his first 10 starts of the year. Keuchel tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Orioles on Friday.
May 17 2021Keuchel (3-1) picked up the win Monday, allowing three runs on seven hits over seven innings in a 16-4 rout of the Twins. He struck out six without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The White Sox staked the southpaw to a 3-0 lead before he even stepped on the mound for the bottom of the first inning and they never stopped mashing, leading to a very low-pressure night for Keuchel. The quality start was his third of the year while the six K's were a season high, and he'll take a 4.44 ERA and 24:15 K:BB through 50.2 innings into his next outing.
May 12 2021Keuchel (2-1) allowed six earned runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out one across 5.2 innings, getting the win over the Twins on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel allowed six earned runs, but received enough run support to get the win in an offensive-heavy game. He surrendered a two-out solo home run to Nelson Cruz in the first inning. The 33-year-old had a couple solid starts, but has been mediocre overall with a 4.53 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 43.2 innings. In addition, he has a bad 1.2 K/BB. His next start is Monday in Minnesota.
May 5 2021Keuchel surrendered only two hits and three walks across seven scoreless innings during Wednesday's extra-inning loss at Cincinnati. He had one strikeout and didn't factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 33-year-old has issued three-plus walks in each of his past two starts, but he was otherwise extremely effective against the Reds during Wednesday's series finale. Sonny Gray similarly blanked the White Sox, leading both starters to receive a no-decision despite not allowing any runs. Keuchel has a 3.79 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 17:14 K:BB across 38 innings through seven starts in 2021.
Apr 30 2021Keuchel (1-1) yielded four runs on four hits and four walks across six innings Friday, striking out four and taking a loss against Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For the most part, it was a solid outing for Keuchel aside from one nightmare inning. He tossed five shutout frames with an ugly four-run third sandwiched in the middle. The 6-foot-2 lefty raised his season ERA to 4.65 through 31 innings. Keuchel is lined up to face the Royals in Kansas City next weekend.
Apr 24 2021Keuchel didn't factor into the decision Saturday against the Rangers. He tossed six scoreless innings, allowing seven hits while fanning two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel had a poor start to the season and posted a 5.68 ERA across his first four outings, but he bounced back here and completed a series of in-season milestones -- this was his first scoreless outing of the campaign and it was also the first time he pitched at least six innings. The 33-year-old left-hander is slated to take the ball next week against the Indians.
Apr 18 2021Keuchel (1-0) won for the first time in four starts, holding the Red Sox to two runs on six hits for a victory in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. He struck out one over five-plus innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel was in command for much of the game and didn't walk a batter for the first time in four starts. He retired the first seven in a row and was pulled after Enrique Hernandez led off the sixth inning with a home run. It was an opposite-field job that curled in around the right-field foul pole and had an expected batting average of .070. It was a typical Keuchel day, as eight of his 15 outs were on groundballs (one flyout). The left-hander brings a 5.68 ERA into his next start Saturday at home against the Rangers.
Apr 12 2021Keuchel allowed three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out two over five innings in a no-decision against Cleveland on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Outside of a two-run homer allowed to Eddie Rosario, Keuchel was fine. Most importantly, he was efficient on short notice after Carlos Rodon was scratched due to an upset stomach; Keuchel completed five innings on only 68 pitches. After the game, manager Tony La Russa told Scott Merkin of MLB.com that Keuchel had thrown a bullpen session Sunday, and while it was said to be "not an extensive one," it explains why Keuchel's pitch count was limited even though he was technically on normal rest. Expect Keuchel to be available for a heavier workload this weekend in Boston.
Apr 7 2021Keuchel pitched five innings against Seattle on Wednesday, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel was a little better than in his first start of the campaign, when he allowed six runs (three earned) over four-plus frames, but he still didn't broach the craftiness of last season that led him to post a career-best 1.99 ERA. The southpaw exited with a chance for a win, however, before reliever Matt Foster let things get away by allowing six baserunners while recording only two outs. Keuchel next's opportunity to nab his first win of the campaign will come Tuesday at home versus Cleveland.
Apr 3 2021Keuchel allowed six runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out four over four-plus innings in Friday's 12-8 win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel was given plenty of support -- he had a 7-1 lead entering the bottom of the fourth inning -- but was unable to get through the five innings necessary to qualify for the win. The left-hander will look for a bounceback performance next Wednesday, April 7, at Seattle.
Mar 24 2021Keuchel allowed one hit and struck out three over four scoreless innings in Tuesday's spring game against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel made quick work of the crosstown rivals, dispatching the Cubs in just 41 pitches. He had been scheduled to throw 65, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. This was his second outing and much different from his Cactus League debut, when he had an inning rolled and allowed five runs in 2.1 innings against Kansas City. "Endurance-wise I felt a lot better today. I didn't really taper off like I did five days ago, so that's a check off at the bottom," Keuchel said. The left-hander is scheduled for one more spring start before pitching the second game of the regular season.
Mar 19 2021Keuchel made his Cactus League debut Thursday and allowed five runs on five hits and two walks while striking out one over 2.1 innings against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Even though Thursday was a late debut, Keuchel was able to throw 54 pitches because the left-hander had thrown simulated games and bullpen sessions on the back fields. His first inning was rolled, and he was removed before returning for the start of the second inning. The results were not good, but they aren't as important as getting the work in. "Really, the only way to get volume in is kind of give up some base hits, ground balls, I gave up a hard hit, was consistently in the stretch. So I'm checking off all these boxes that I actually need to do to make it through six, seven innings a start in the regular season," he told Scott Merkin of MLB.com. Keuchel is set to start the second game of the regular season.
Mar 15 2021Keuchel will start Chicago's second game of the season against the Angels, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He has a 3.55 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and six strikeouts in 12.2 innings this spring. Lucas Giolito will get the ball on Opening Day and Lance Lynn will slot into the third spot in the rotation. Keuchel will likely be facing Shohei Ohtani or Andrew Heaney in this start, as Dylan Bundy has already been named the Angels' Opening Day starter.
Mar 4 2021Keuchel is scheduled to start Monday against the Dodgers, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This will be Keuchel's first Cactus League start of 2021. The left-hander will be among the top three White Sox starters, along with Lucas Giolito and Lance Lynn, likely slotted in between the two righties.
Oct 1 2020Keuchel was charged with five runs (three earned) on six hits over 3.1 innings in a loss to the A's on Wednesday in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series. He struck out four and did not issue a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty was unable to keep the momentum he picked up over his final six starts of the regular season (1.06 ERA, 1.12 WHIP). Known as a groundball specialist, Keuchel let two get up and out of the park in this one (off the bats of Marcus Semien in the second inning and Khris Davis in the fourth). He will get a chance to redeem himself if the White Sox are able to advance to the ALDS.
Sep 24 2020Keuchel allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out three over six innings in a no-decision against Cleveland on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Chicago bullpen let him down, but Keuchel did his part with six innings of one-run ball, bringing his ERA for the season under 2.00. It's been a resurgent year for the 2015 AL Cy Young winner after a down season with Atlanta. Keuchel makes up for his lack of swing-and-miss stuff with groundballs galore -- he gave up a mere two homers in 63.1 innings this season. Look for Keuchel to start the second postseason game for the White Sox after Lucas Giolito starts Game 1.
Sep 20 2020Keuchel, returning from a back injury, said he felt rusty during his return to the rotation Saturday against the Reds, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The results were good for Keuchel, who shut out the Reds for four innings, but the left-hander said the quality of pitches weren't there and referred to the outing as "one of the luckiest starts I've had." Keuchel started for the first time in 13 days, so the rust is to be expected. He'll get one more tuneup Thursday at Cleveland before the playoffs begin.
Sep 19 2020Keuchel didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 5-0 win over the Reds, allowing four hits and three walks over four scoreless innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While the veteran southpaw didn't last long enough to qualify for his seventh win of the year, it was otherwise a very successful return from the IL. Keuchel fired 42 of 75 pitches for strikes while lowering his ERA to 2.04, and he'll get one more turn through the rotation Thursday in Cleveland to get stretched out a little more before the playoffs.
Sep 18 2020Keuchel (back) will return from the injured list Saturday and start at Cincinnati, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 32-year-old was previously expected to rejoin the rotation Thursday, but the team pushed his return back a few days to line him up for the playoffs. Keuchel has a 6-2 record with a 2.19 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 32:12 K:BB over 53.1 innings this season.
Sep 16 2020Keuchel (back) won't start Thursday versus the Twins but could pitch this weekend against the Reds, Scot Gregor of the Chicago Daily Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The team was previously targeting Thursday for the left-hander's return from the injured list, but Reynaldo Lopez will instead be taking the mound. Keuchel didn't suffer any sort of setback, and manager Rick Renteria said he was pushed back in order to better line up the starting rotation for the playoffs, per James Fegan of The Athletic.
Sep 13 2020Keuchel (back) remains on track to start Thursday against the Twins, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This had been the target return date and it sounds like nothing has changed in that regard. It's not official yet, but fantasy managers can expect to have Keuchel back for that matchup. He threw five innings Sept. 6, so he should be able to go deep enough to qualify for the win if he is efficient with his pitches.
Sep 12 2020Keuchel (back) is tentatively expected to return from the injured list to start next Thursday against the Twins, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel was placed on the injured list Thursday, retroactive to Sept. 7, so he will be eligible to return for the fourth game of the series against Minnesota. That's an important series between the two leaders in the AL Central.
Sep 10 2020Keuchel was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday with back spasms, retroactive to Sept. 7. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He can return Sept. 17 against the Twins if he requires the minimum stay. Reynaldo Lopez was recalled to presumably take Keuchel's spot in the rotation.
Sep 9 2020Keuchel (back) will not make his scheduled start this weekend against Detroit, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The White Sox are reportedly not overly concerned about the lower-back stiffness that forced the veteran lefty to leave his previous start against the Royals early Sunday, but they'll skip his next turn just to be safe. He's expected to be ready to pitch at some point during next week's series against the Twins, which runs from Monday through Thursday. The team hasn't announced who will make a spot start in his absence.
Sep 6 2020Keuchel (6-2) was credited with the win before leaving Sunday's game against the Royals with lower-back stiffness and is day-to-day, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. He allowed two hits and struck out two over five scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This seems to be good news all things considered; it's not an arm injury, and the fact the White Sox used the term "day-to-day" suggests Keuchel could make his next start. That said, the team may want to wait and see how he feels in the coming days before making any final decisions regarding his status for next weekend.
Sep 3 2020Keuchel (illness) will make his next start Sunday against the Royals, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: During his last start Tuesday against the Twins, Keuchel pitched effectively over five innings, but manager Rick Renteria elected to pull the southpaw early while he dealt with a stomach ailment. The fact that the White Sox are already listing Keuchel as a probable starter for the series finale in Kansas City suggests the team doesn't believe the illness will affect his availability heading into the weekend.
Sep 1 2020Keuchel was limited to five innings during Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Twins due to a stomach issue, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. He allowed one unearned run on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks, and he did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran southpaw was still able to reach 85 pitches Tuesday, so the illness likely only shortened the outing by an inning. There was plenty of traffic on the bases, but Keuchel escaped without allowing an earned run as he didn't give up any extra-base hits. The 32-year-old has a 2.42 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 30:12 K:BB through 48.1 innings, and he lines up to start Sunday in Kansas City, assuming the stomach issue presents no further complications.
Aug 26 2020Keuchel (5-2) earned the win Wednesday against the Pirates after allowing two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and three walks over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander remarkably managed not to throw a first-pitch strike to any of the 25 batters he faced, but he was still able to deliver a quality start. Keuchel is off to a fantastic start in 2020 with a 2.70 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 26:10 K:BB through 43.1 innings, and he'll look to keep things rolling Tuesday in Minnesota.
Aug 22 2020Keuchel (4-2) allowed one run on six hits and one walk while striking out three to pick up the win over the Cubs on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel was well supported as the White Sox belted six home runs in the 10-1 win, but the left-hander didn't need much to lead them to their sixth straight win. It was Keuchel's longest outing of the season -- 114 pitches -- and third quality start, dropping his ERA to 2.65. Keuchel will aim for his fifth win next Wednesday at home against the worst team in baseball, the Pirates.
Aug 16 2020Keuchel (3-2) allowed two earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out one across 5.2 innings to earn the win Sunday against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel retired 15 of the first 17 batters he faced, surrendering only a walk and a single through five frames. However, he met resistance in the sixth inning, allowing three singles and a walk to account for his two earned runs. As would be expected, he generated 10 groundball outs and didn't miss many bats while inducing only eight swinging strikes across 93 total pitches. Keuchel now has a 3.07 ERA across 29.1 innings this season, and he'll look to maintain that success in his next start, currently projected to come Friday at the Cubs.
Aug 10 2020Keuchel (2-2) allowed three runs on six hits and two walks over six innings in a loss to the Tigers on Monday. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty groundballer gave up a homer for just the second time this season. He still managed to spin a quality start, his second in a row. Keuchel's eight-strikeout game against Milwaukee last week was an anomaly, though the 2015 AL Cy Young winner is showing that he can still be an asset in fantasy leagues despite lacking traditional dominance. We'll see if he makes his scheduled start this weekend against the Cardinals.
Aug 5 2020Keuchel (2-1) suffered the loss against the Brewers on Wednesday, allowing one run on five hits and a walk while striking out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Despite taking his first loss, Keuchel tossed his longest game of the year after failing to complete six innings in his previous two outings. Aside from an RBI single by Eric Sogard in the third frame, the southpaw was lights out, sending eight batters down on strikes. Across three starts, Keuchel owns a 2.55 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 11:2 K:BB. He'll look to get back into the win column Monday at Detroit.
Jul 31 2020Keuchel (2-0) picked up the win Friday in a 3-2 victory over the Royals, allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran southpaw was staked to a 3-0 lead in the second inning and kept Kansas City's hitters off-balance long enough to record the win. Keuchel tossed 92 pitches (54 strikes) and while he wasn't dominant, he got the job done. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing Wednesday, at home against the Brewers.
Jul 25 2020Keuchel (1-0) earned the win Saturday against the Twins after giving up two runs on three hits and zero walks over 5.1 innings. He recorded one strikeout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran southpaw was on cruise control through five innings, but he was removed at 73 pitches with runners on first and second with one out in the sixth inning. Nelson Cruz then clubbed a three-run homer on the second pitch from Steve Cishek. Still, it was a good first outing of the season for Keuchel, who has a solid matchup Friday at Kansas City for his next start.
Jul 21 2020Keuchel allowed one hit over five scoreless innings in Monday's exhibition game against the Cubs, Scot Gregor of the Daily Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel faced the minimum of 15 batters as the one lone baserunner was wiped out by a double play. This marked the first time in summer camp that he reached five innings, the minimum number of innings required to qualify for a win. The left-hander is expected to start the second game of the season, Saturday at home against the Twins.
Jul 16 2020Keuchel did not allow a baserunner while pitching from the stretch for 3.2 innings during Wednesday's intrasquad game, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Following the outing, Keuchel said he's considering working exclusively from the stretch during the season. "I might be a left-handed, softer version of Stephen Strasburg," said Keuchel. "The windup really hasn't felt phenomenal to me, but then the other side of it is that the stretch has felt so locked in that I might just go with that." The left-hander has been efficient during his summer camp outings, but that has limited his innings. While other starters are up to four or five innings, Keuchel hopes to reach four-to-five innings in his final camp appearance Monday against the Cubs.
Jul 10 2020Keuchel threw 2.1 scoreless innings in Friday's intrasquad game, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was Keuchel's first start of summer camp, and he felt strong enough to go a little longer. The left-hander said he's taking a precautionary route while preparing for the regular season with a goal of reaching five innings. Keuchel will have two more camp outings to build up his pitch count.
May 1 2020Keuchel may be better prepared for the pandemic-induced layoff than other starters, Scot Gregor of the Daily Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel, like every MLB starter, is coping with the layoff, but he was in the same position in 2019. A free agent at this time last year, Keuchel did not sign with the Braves until after June's amateur draft. The left-hander kept his arm in shape at home in Newport Beach (Calif.). "I was throwing every fifth day just like in spring training," he said. "Physically, I was so in shape that I was ready to go but until you get that major-league adrenaline and atmosphere out there, it's tough to duplicate." Keuchel, who is lining up to be the second starter behind Lucas Giolito, offers balance in the rotation as a lefty who doesn't overpower opponents with a high-velocity fastball.
Mar 8 2020Keuchel allowed four runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out three over 3.2 innings in Saturday's spring game against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While he was pulled in the middle of the fourth inning, Keuchel told Scott Merkin of MLB.com that he could have pitched another couple of innings. Despite the runs, the veteran left-hander is pleased to get his work in. He'll next throw in an in-camp format Thursday, when the White Sox have a scheduled off day.
Mar 3 2020Keuchel allowed one run on six hits while striking out one over four innings in a spring game against the Padres on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel looked in midseason form during his spring debut, inducing nine groundball outs with a lot of soft contact. The left-hander worked his pitch count to 50 (34 strikes) and was pleased with where he's at. ''I've been saying all spring that I felt ahead of schedule physically and mentally where I'm at,'' Keuchel, who missed spring training as a free agent a year ago, told Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times. ''That's just a huge sign for me.'' The groundball pitcher also suggested the White Sox might deploy defensive alignments behind him, which could allow fewer balls to get through the infield.
Feb 27 2020Keuchel threw a simulated game Wednesday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The White Sox are sticking to their plan of not having their starters face AL Central foes, so rather than use Keuchel against the Royals, they had him throw a sim game in the backfields. The left-hander got up and down three times and was upbeat about being able to throw his curveball consistently. That's how he knows he's ahead of schedule relative to previous seasons.
Dec 21 2019Keuchel agreed to a contract with the White Sox on Saturday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's a heavy contrast to last season, when Keuchel didn't reach a deal until signing with the Braves in June. The veteran left-hander posted a 3.75 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 91:39 K:BB over 112.2 innings across 19 starts with Atlanta, which are similar to his numbers from the 2018 season. According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, it's a three-year deal worth $55.5 million that includes a vesting option for a fourth year worth an additional $18.5 million.
Oct 7 2019Keuchel will start Game 4 of the NLDS against the Cardinals on Monday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel will be pitching on short rest, having thrown 74 pitches in Game 1 on Thursday. He may not be required to pitch too deep into Monday's contest, as the Braves can go to the bullpen early with an off day Tuesday and potentially a few more off days after that if they can finish off the Cardinals in Game 4.
Oct 4 2019Keuchel allowed one run on five hits and three walks over 4.2 innings in a no-decision against St. Louis in Game 1 of the NLDS on Thursday. He did not record a strikeout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While far from dominant, Keuchel was effective against the Cardinals in his first non-Astros postseason appearance. He saw his effort go to waste when Luke Jackson and Mark Melancon combined to allow six runs in the later innings. Keuchel lines up to start in a decisive Game 5, should the series get to that point.
Oct 1 2019Keuchel was named the starter for Game 1 of the National League Divisional Series on Thursday against the Cardinals.
Oct 1 2019Keuchel was named the starter for Game 1 of the National League Divisional Series on Thursday against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw will receive the start for the first game of the NLDS against the Cardinals despite being charged with losses in each of his last three starts while recording a 10:7 K:BB with an ERA of 6.19. Since signing with the Braves in June, Keuchel owns and ERA of 3.75 with a 1.37 WHIP in 19 starts.
Sep 27 2019Keuchel (8-8) was saddled with the loss after yielding four runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out four over five innings Friday against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Braves handed Keuchel a two-run lead in the top of the first inning, but he would surrender one in the bottom of the first, one in the third and two more in the fourth before exiting. He fired 62 of 98 pitches for strikes on the night. The 31-year-old southpaw owns a 3.75 ERA and 1.37 WHIP with a 91:39 K:BB over 112.2 innings heading into the postseason.
Sep 22 2019Keuchel (8-7) allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts across six innings while taking a loss against the Giants on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While he pitched better Sunday, Keuchel has struggled in his last two starts, yielding seven earned runs in his last 11 frames. Prior to these struggles, Keuchel had won five of six starts and posted an ERA under 1.00 during that stretch. Overall, he owns a 3.59 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 87 strikeouts in 107.2 innings this season. Keuchel is scheduled to make one more regular season start at the Mets on Sunday.
Sep 17 2019Keuchel (8-6) allowed five earned runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out two across five innings to take the loss Tuesday against the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Keuchel surrendered a pair of two-run home runs, accounting for all but one of his earned runs on the day. He otherwise limited the Phillies to only base knocks, but did lack elusiveness as he generated just eight swinging strikes on 95 total pitches. Keuchel had pitched well entering Tuesday's contest, having allowed two or fewer earned runs in six consecutive starts. Even with the rough outing, his ERA remains at 3.63 ERA through 101.2 innings. He'll try to get back on track in his next outing, currently scheduled for Sunday against San Francisco.
Sep 11 2019Keuchel (8-5) allowed one run on three hits with three walks and eight strikeouts across six innings while earning a victory against the Phillies on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Just like the Braves, Keuchel is scorching hot, having won five straight starts with a 1.16 ERA during that stretch. Dating back to Aug. 14, Keuchel owns a 0.97 ERA in six outings. Behind this hot streak, Keuchel has now won half his starts and has a 3.35 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 81 strikeouts in 96.2 innings this season. He will face the Phillies again in his next start at home Tuesday.
Sep 7 2019Keuchel (7-5) picked up the win in Friday's 4-3 victory over the Nationals, allowing six hits and two walks over six scoreless innings while striking out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw has reeled off four straight wins and five straight quality starts, posting a dazzling 0.87 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 27:9 K:BB over 31 innings in that five-game stretch. Keuchel will look to stay locked in for his next outing Wednesday in Philadelphia.
Sep 1 2019Keuchel (6-5) picked up the win in Saturday's 11-5 victory over the White Sox, allowing two runs on nine hits over six innings while striking out three.
Aug 25 2019Keuchel (5-5) gave up four hits and three walks while striking out seven over seven scoreless innings on the way to a win Sunday against the Mets.
Aug 20 2019Keuchel (4-5) earned the win Tuesday against the Marlins after giving up one run on six hits over six innings. He had seven strikeouts and two walks.
Aug 14 2019Keuchel gave up no runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven through six innings in a no-decision against the Mets on Wednesday.
Aug 8 2019Keuchel (3-5) allowed eight runs on 10 hits and one walk across 3.2 innings while taking the loss Thursday against the Marlins. He struck out four.
Aug 4 2019Keuchel didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 5-4 extra-inning win over the Reds, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk over seven innings while striking

Jul 21 2018Keuchel (8-8) picked up the win against the Angels on Friday, giving up one earned run on two hits over 7.2 innings, with five strikeouts and a walk in Houston's 3-1 victory.Keuchel had some erratic results for much of the first part of the season, but he seems to have found his groove of late, as he's now 4-0 with 18 strikeouts over his last four starts. The strong stretch has evened out his ratios a bit and his 3.60 ERA and 1.25 WHIP could stand to improve even more if the 30-year-old can keep up his recent hot streak. He's set to take the mound next in a home matchup against the Rangers next Friday.
Jul 14 2018Keuchel (7-8) picked up the win in Friday's 3-0 victory over the Tigers, allowing six hits and a walk over six scoreless innings while striking out four. The left-hander recorded his 12th quality start of the season, and fifth in his last six outings. Keuchel will carry a 3.75 ERA into the All-Star break.
Jul 8 2018Keuchel (6-8) allowed one earned run on six hits and three walks while striking out two across seven innings to earn the win Sunday against the White Sox.Keuchel turned in a signature start, recording 17 of his 21 outs via the groundball. He did give up a lot of contact -- his two strikeouts were a season low -- but took advantage of a matchup against one of the weaker hitting teams in the league. After stumbling through much of June, Keuchel has put together two strong starts that span 14 innings, during which he has allowed just three earned runs.
Jul 4 2018Keuchel (5-8) allowed two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out seven in Tuesday's 5-3 win over Texas.Keuchel's batterymate, Max Stassi, left the game in the first inning after getting hit by a pitch on the hand, so it was up to backup Tim Federowicz, recently called up to replace the injured Brian McCann (knee), to guide the left-hander through the 102-degree temperature in Arlington. And the duo handled it with aplomb. Keuchel struck out six of the first seven men faced, didn't allow a hit until the third inning, and lasted seven innings for the first time since May 13, which was also the last time he gave up fewer than five hits. The bearded lefty will look to make it four quality starts in five games when he faces the White Sox at home in Houston on Sunday.
Jun 27 2018Keuchel didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 7-6 win over the Blue Jays, coughing up six runs on seven hits and three walks over 5.1 innings while striking out three. The Jays tagged him for five runs in the top of the first inning, but the left-hander settled down after that and was finally taken off the hook for his ninth loss of the year by Alex Bregman's walkoff homer. Keuchel has now given up at least six runs three times in his last five starts but zero earned runs in the other two, making him a very volatile fantasy play right now, and he'll carry a 4.22 ERA into his next outing Tuesday on the road against the Rangers.
Jun 23 2018Keuchel struck out six in six scoreless innings Friday against the Astros, giving up two walks and six hits in a no-decisionAfter a few rough outings in which he gave up 16 earned runs across 16 innings in three starts, Keuchel has now had back-to-back starts without allowing an earned run. The lefty has brought his ERA back under 4.00 and carries a 1.31 WHIP while sporting a middle-of-the-road .265 batting average against. His next start will be a matchup at home against the Blue Jays.
Jun 17 2018Keuchel (4-8) picked up the win Saturday against the Royals, allowing two unearned runs on six hits and one walk across six innings. He struck out five.It was a nice bounce-back effort from Keuchel, who was tagged for five earned runs across just 4.1 innings in his previous start. Keuchel likely would have been able to work deeper into the game, but an error from Carlos Correa in the fifth inning resulted in a pair of unearned runs and the southpaw tossing an extra 15 pitches. It's been a bit of an up and down year for the southpaw, who now owns a 4.15 ERA and 71:23 K:BB through 15 starts (91 innings), but he'll look to build off of Saturday's strong outing in his next scheduled start, which will come at home in a rematch against the Royals.
Jun 10 2018Keuchel allowed six runs (five earned) on 13 hits and no walks while striking out three across 4.1 innings Sunday against the Rangers. He did not factor into the decision.Keuchel was a given a six-run lead, but couldn't make it last thanks to the 13 hits he allowed, which matched a career-worst. The lone positive that can be taken from the outing is that he allowed only one extra-base hit, a double to Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Because of that, it would be tempting to write this start off as bad batted-ball luck, but Keuchel has now allowed 16 earned runs over his last 16 innings pitched.
Jun 9 2018Keuchel considered the possibility that he's been tipping his pitches, but backed off that after watching video of his latest start, Hunter Atkins of the Houston Chronicle reports.Keuchel was left shaking his head after his last start when he allowed four first-inning runs and seven overall in a loss to the Mariners. The left-hander said he felt good and like he was making quality pitches, but allowed at least four runs for the third time in the last four starts. In particular, the first inning has been a problem for Keuchel, who has a 9.00 ERA and allowed a 1.004 OPS to opponents in the opening frame. Keuchel will try to turn around his recent struggles Sunday when he starts the series finale against Texas.
Jun 5 2018Keuchel (3-8) took the loss Tuesday, allowing seven runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out three over 6.2 innings against the Mariners.Keuchel was tagged for four runs in the first inning and faced a 6-0 hole by the second, so he deserves some credit for still being able to make it all the way into the seventh inning. That's about the only positive to take away from this start, as the lefty matched season-worsts with three home runs allowed and just three strikeouts. With a league-leading eight losses, it's been tough sledding all season for the former Cy Young winner and he's now allowed at least four runs in three of his last four starts. He'll try to get back on track Sunday against the Rangers.
May 30 2018Keuchel (3-7) took the loss Wednesday, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out seven over five innings against the Yankees.Keuchel allowed just a pair of singles and run one through the first four frames, but the wheels started coming off after that. He allowed two runs in the fifth followed by two more when he came back out to start the sixth. His 3.65 ERA would suggest he deserves a better fate than seven losses (tied for most in the AL), but he did himself no favors in this one with three free passes and a pair of wild pitches. The lefty will look to get back in the win column Tuesday against the Mariners.
May 26 2018Keuchel didn't factor into the decision against Cleveland on Friday, scattering eight hits over six innings, giving up two earned runs, striking out five and walking one in the Astros' 11-2 victory.Keuchel pitched well in this contest, but didn't find himself in line for the win, as the Astros got all 11 of their runs late off Cleveland's bullpen after Indians ace Corey Kluber got taken out of the game. Keuchel's 3-6 record through his first 11 starts of the season has been a bit of a disappointment considering he's averaged 15 wins per season over the last three years. However, his 3.39 ERA and 1.17 WHIP through 69 innings are still strong numbers, and if he continues to keep his stats around those levels, he should start to find himself in line for more victories pitching on a great Houston team with one of the better lineups in baseball.
May 19 2018Keuchel (3-6) took the loss Saturday against the Indians. He allowed four runs over 5.0 innings, allowing six hits and two walks while picking up three strikeouts. The record may be ugly, but Keuchel still possesses a 3.43 ERA to go with a 1.14 WHIP on the season. A rocky start to the year was followed by a strong, six-start stretch in which Keuchel recorded a 2.72 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP over 43.0 innings. That streak ended Saturday against an Indians lineup that is starting to wake up. Keuchel's biggest issue Saturday was the first inning when he dug himself a three-run deficit before settling down for the rest of his start. He's lined up to face the Indians again in his next start May 25.
May 13 2018Keuchel (3-5) allowed three hits and a walk while striking out a season-high eight over seven scoreless innings in Sunday's 6-1 win over the Rangers.Keuchel was in complete control of the Rangers, who had a couple of first-inning singles but did little else. The left-hander kept Texas hitters off balance by changing speeds and retired 20 of the final 22 batters faced to win his second consecutive start. Keuchel has allowed three or fewer runs in seven of his eight starts and is finally enjoying a little run support. His next start is Saturday at home against the Indians.
May 8 2018Keuchel (2-5) lasted eight strong innings and allowed just one run on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts to pick up the win Monday against Oakland.Keuchel was finally rewarded for a quality start with a win, but he is still just 2-3 in his five quality starts this season. Regardless, Keuchel was at his most efficient Monday night, as he used 12 groundballs to help stretch his 101 pitches through eight frames. He has now lasted eight innings twice and at least seven innings in four of his eight starts. The Astros lineup is strong, as they proved with 16 runs Monday night, so if Keuchel can keep going deep in games, expect him to start racking up the wins. He'll go for number three Sunday against Texas.
May 2 2018Keuchel (1-5) took the loss against the Yankees on Wednesday, allowing three runs on six hits over seven innings while striking out five.He came into the game with a 1.41 career ERA and pristine 0.0 HR/9 in six starts against the Yankees, but Giancarlo Stanton ruined all that by taking Keuchel deep twice. The left-hander now has a 3.98 ERA and 33:12 K:BB in 43 innings on the season, numbers he'll look to improve on further Monday in Oakland.
Apr 28 2018Keuchel (1-4) allowed six runs on seven hits in a loss to Oakland on Friday, striking out three and walking zero in seven innings.Keuchel was cruising through four innings, and then things unraveled and he gave up six runs over the next three innings of work. The long ball was the issue Friday, as he surrendered two two-run homers and a solo shot. Keuchel has now given up six homers on the year, and has achieved quality starts in three of his six starts. A bright point is that he didn't walk anyone, as he had allowed 12 walks in 29 innings going into this start. The lefty will carry a 4.00 ERA into his next start at home against the Yankees.
Apr 27 2018Keuchel (1-4) allowed six runs on seven hits, including three home runs, while striking out three over seven innings in Friday's 8-1 loss to Oakland. The game began as a pitching duel as Keuchel retired the first 13 batters faced while Athletics starter Sean Manaea, who no-hit the Red Sox six days earlier, retired his first nine batters. The A's then brought out their power lumber to take Keuchel deep three times, once each in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. It was the most homers allowed by the left-hander since Sept. 16, 2015. It's been a tough start to the season for Keuchel, who has been given one run of support in four his six starts. He'll hope the bats to show up his next time out, Wednesday at home against the Yankees.
Apr 21 2018Keuchel (1-3) allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out six over six innings in Saturday's 10-1 win over the White Sox.Keuchel was gifted an 8-0 lead after two innings and then it became a matter of throwing strikes and getting an easy W. After a rocky start to the season, Keuchel has been impressive the last two times out, allowing three runs over 14 innings. He's in a groove leading up to his next start, Friday at home against Oakland. The left-hander was 3-1 with a 1.98 ERA in four starts against the Athletics in 2017.
Apr 17 2018Keuchel (0-3) allowed just two runs on six hits and a walk with six strikeouts in an eight inning complete game but was still left with the loss Monday night against the Mariners.Keuchel remains winless, but this was finally a performance worthy of a former Cy Young winner. The main blemish was a solo home run off the bat of Nelson Cruz in the fourth inning, but other than that, Keuchel was exceptionally sharp. He induced 14 grounders against just four fly balls and threw 24 first-pitch strikes to 31 hitters as he hit his spots all night long. If Keuchel can find this form with regularity, the Astros lineup will deliver him the wins before long.
Apr 10 2018Keuchel (0-2) took the loss Tuesday after allowing three earned runs on five hits while walking four and striking out six across four innings Tuesday against the Twins. For the second straight start Keuchel walked four batters, a mark he only hit once in his 23 regular season starts in 2017. Notably, his swinging strike rate has remained consistent, but he has gotten only 11 and 15 called strikes over his past two starts respectively. His start Tuesday came in Minnesota where the weather remains cold so it's possible he wasn't able to place his pitches well due to lack of grip or feeling in his pitches. However, if he continues to miss the zone, he'll have to come in the zone more, a situation where he has proven hittable in the past.
Apr 4 2018Keuchel allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and four walks while striking out three over five innings in Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Orioles. It was a grind for Keuchel, who didn't have his best stuff and required 104 deliveries to get through his five innings. The left-hander was chasing the count all day, throwing first-pitch strikes to just 12 of 24 batters. On this team, with this offense, pitchers don't need to have their best, but the vaunted offense failed with runners in scoring position (1-for-8). Fortunately, the offense has a knack for kicking in eventually and the Astros plated runs in the sixth and seventh innings to take Keuchel off the hook. More often than not, he'll win games when giving up two or fewer runs. He's next scheduled to start Tuesday, April 10 in Minnesota.
Mar 31 2018Keuchel wasn't as sharp as usual with his two-seam fastball in Friday's loss to the Rangers, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. "I felt good initially out of the gate but felt like I was forcing my arm-side fastball too much. It was one of those days where my glove-side extension side has more movement. I gave up more hits to lefties than I would have liked. It should have been a lot better than it was," Keuchel said.Keuchel, who's normally death on left-handed batters, walked one and gave up three hits to lefties, including Nomar Mazara's solo home run. The bearded left-hander worked with men on base in five of six innings, but other than the homer, he curtailed the damage. He'll work on the precision of the two-seamer for his next start scheduled on April 4 at home against Baltimore. He won his lone start against the Orioles in 2017.
Mar 30 2018Keuchel (0-1) picked up the loss, allowing three runs over six innings and striking out four in Houston's 5-1 defeat to the Rangers on Friday.Keuchel logged a quality start despite the defeat and showcased the traits that have made him one of the most consistent starters in baseball the last few years aside from his outlier 2016 season. Keuchel was limited to 145.2 innings due to injury last year but he was stellar when he did pitch, logging a 2.90 ERA with a 1.12 WHIP to go along with a 14-5 record. Assuming he stays healthy, the 29-year-old has the ability to anchor a fantasy staff and figures to be a mainstay along with Justin Verlander atop Houston's rotation in 2018.
Mar 25 2018Keuchel allowed two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out five over five innings Sunday against the Marlins.Keuchel closed out a successful Grapefruit League circuit with a 2.35 ERA and 1.17 WHIP over 15.1 innings. The left-hander told Brian McTaggart of MLB.com that he was pleased to get his breaking ball over the plate for strikes and recorded a few punchouts with his secondary pitches. Keuchel deemed himself "ready to go and have some fun" when he makes first start of the regular season Friday, March 30, against the Rangers in Arlington.
Mar 16 2018Keuchel allowed four hits and a walk while striking out two over five scoreless innings Thursday against the Nationals.Keuchel is cruising toward the regular season after building his pitch count to 70 with two more spring starts before he takes the ball for Houston's second game of the season. He was particularly pleased with his fastball command, per Jerome Solomon of the Houston Chronicle. The left-hander will use his final two weeks of camp to work on his off-speed offerings.
Mar 11 2018Keuchel allowed one hit and struck out five over 3.2 innings in Saturday's game against the Nationals.Keuchel was much better in his second spring start, retiring the first 11 batters he faced. The left-hander had given up two runs and four hits over 1.2 innings in his first spring start, but was much sharper with his fastball command Saturday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. He'll get another three spring starts and should have his pitch count right where it needs to be when he's scheduled to start the second game of the season.
Mar 5 2018Keuchel will not be the Opening Day starter for the first time in four seasons, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.Manager A.J. Hinch announced that Justin Verlander will kick off the regular season Mar. 29 against the Rangers with Keuchel following him the next day. Hinch said he could have gone with either pitcher, but deferred to Verlander, who was 5-0 with a 1.06 ERA in an Astros uniform last year and was the healthier pitcher entering training camp. "J.V.'s got a long pedigree, he's done a lot in the game, he's pitched very well as an Astro," said the manager. Keuchel was brought along slowly this spring after injuring his foot during the offseason. The left-hander made his spring debut Monday, firing 1.2 innings against Miami.
Mar 4 2018Keuchel will make his first start of spring training Monday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. The Astros are making a point of bringing Keucheul along slowly after the left-hander sustained a sprained left foot during the offseason.
Feb 3 2018Keuchel (foot) will throw his first bullpen session of spring next week, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.Keuchel sustained a mild sprain of his left foot during the offseason, but it should not be a concern as he ramps up for Houston's spring training beginning Feb. 14.
Jan 12 2018Keuchel (foot) agreed to a one-year, $13.2 million deal with the Astros on Friday to avoid arbitration, Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports. This was the final offseason as an arbitration-eligible player for Keuchel, who will become a free agent after the 2018 season. He is currently recoving from a mild left foot sprain but he's been able to resume throwing and is expected to be ready for the start of spring training. In 2017, the left-hander posted a 2.90 ERA and 1.12 WHIP with a 125:47 K:BB over 23 starts.
Jan 6 2018Keuchel (foot) was able to begin throwing after shedding his walking boot last week and expects to pitch off the mound in early February, Jake Kaplan of The Houston Chronicle reports.Keuchel suffered a mild left foot sprain during the team's World Series parade in early November, but remains on track to be fully healed and recovered prior to spring training. The Astros stated that the walking boot was simply a precaution, and it's obviously a positive sign that he's been able to resume his throwing progression. At this point, there should be no concerns over his availability for the 2018 campaign.
Jan 6 2018Keuchel (foot) was able to begin throwing after shedding his walking boot last week, and expects to pitch off the mound in early February, Jake Kaplan of The Houston Chronicle reports.Keuchel suffered a mild left foot sprain during the team's World Series parade in early November, but remains on track to be fully healed and recovered prior to spring training. The Astros stated that the walking boot was simply a precaution, and it's obviously a positive sign that he's been able to resume his throwing progression. At this point, there should be no concerns over his availability for the 2018 campaign.
Dec 3 2017Keuchel is currently sporting a walking boot as he recovers from a mild left foot sprain, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.Keuchel apparently suffered the injury during the Astros' World Series parade in early November, but the diagnosis of a "mild" sprain suggests it's nothing overly serious. Additionally, the Astros are saying that the walking boot is simply precautionary and that Keuchel is expected to be ready for spring training, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports.
Oct 27 2017Keuchel will take the mound for Game 5 of the World Series against the Dodgers on Sunday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.Expectedly, manager A.J. Hinch will lean upon the southpaw to deliver during Houston's final home game of the 2017 season following his Game 1 start Tuesday. This places Keuchel on normal rest, and he will likely go up against Clayton Kershaw once again, although Dodgers' manager Dave Roberts has yet to announce his rotation for Game 4 or Game 5 at this point. If the series goes to a Game 6, Justin Verlander is set to follow Keuchel after his outstanding performance in Game 2 on Wednesday. In the scenario that this series goes the distance, Keuchel will be available out of the bullpen for the finale.
Oct 22 2017Keuchel will start in Game 1 of the Astros' World Series matchup with the Dodgers on Tuesday, Matt Kelly of MLB.com reports. The 2015 American League Cy Young Award winner has been stellar throughout the playoffs and owns a 2.59 ERA over his five career postseason starts, so it was a no-brainer for Astros manager A.J. Hinch to turn to their ace for Game 1. Keuchel will oppose Clayton Kershaw in the contest, with Justin Verlander following the lefty in the rotation start Game 2.
Oct 11 2017Keuchel will start Game 1 of the ALCS on Friday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.Although manager A.J. Hinch doesn't know which team the Astros will be facing, he confirmed Keuchel as the Game 1 starter while also stating that Justin Verlander will take the hill for Game 2. This comes as no surprise, and likely lines Keuchel up for a Game 5 start next Wednesday, if it's necessary, although he could wind up going Tuesday on short rest depending on the position Houston is in.
Oct 9 2017A.J. Hinch said Keuchel will most likely start Game 1 of the ALCS against either the Indians or Yankees, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.Hinch wouldn't confirm anything, but Keuchel seems to be the obvious choice seeing as he'll be on normal rest and Justin Verlander was used in relief during Monday's series-clinching win over the Red Sox. Keuchel allowed one run on three hits and three walks while striking out seven batters over 5.2 innings in his first start of the postseason.
Oct 3 2017Keuchel will start Game 2 of the NLDS on Friday against the Red Sox.He had some bumps in the road this season, but was very impressive on the whole. Keuchel posted a 2.87 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 28 strikeouts in 31.1 innings over five September starts. Justin Verlander will take the ball in Game 1.
Oct 1 2017Keuchel is scheduled to throw a simulated game against several Houston hitters at Fenway Park in Boston on Sunday, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.Sunday lines up as Keuchel's turn in the rotation, but the Astros aren't going to let the Red Sox, Houston's opponent in the ALDS, get a bonus look at the left-hander in a meaningless game. The next time Keuchel throws in a competitive environment is expected to be Friday, Game 2 of the ALDS. He'll be pitching on nine days rest, but Keuchel is not concerned about the layoff, noting that Sunday's simulated game keeps him on his routine and "locked in."
Sep 26 2017Keuchel (14-5) picked up the win Tuesday against the Rangers. He allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk while striking out eight over six innings. The Astros' offense gifted Keuchel with a four-run lead as he entered the opening frame, and the former Cy Young took it from there. The 29-year-old has now allowed only four earned runs over his past three starts (18 innings) and has lowered his ERA to an sparkling 2.90. Keuchel's eight punchouts also marked his highest strikeout total since late May. It was a strong performance in what was likely the ace's final start of the regular season.
Sep 21 2017Keuchel gave up two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out seven in six innings Thursday against the White Sox, but was saddled with his fifth loss of the season. After White Sox starter Carson Fulmer exited with a blister in the first inning, Keuchel was outpitched by Chicago's bullpen the rest of the way. He has quality starts in three of his last four outings and his ERA still sits just under 3.00 (2.96) on the season. Keuchel lines up to start Tuesday in Texas and then again on the final day of the regular season, although the Astros could opt to scratch him from that final start in an effort to set their playoff rotation.
Sep 16 2017Keuchel (13-4) allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out four across six innings to earn the victory Saturday against the Mariners.Keuchel had a comfortable six-run lead before allowing a solo homer in the sixth inning, and he was removed after throwing just 90 pitches, as he earned his 13th victory of the campaign. Over his last four outings, he's alternated solid and poor performances, but with a 2.96 ERA in the season, he's been an excellent fantasy option over the course of the season. He'll make his next start Saturday against the Angels.
Sep 10 2017Keuchel (12-4) took the loss Sunday in Oakland after surrendering four runs on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts over 5.2 innings.Keuchel came in with a phenomenal 2.26 home ERA and a human 3.47 mark on the road, and that disparity grew larger after this subpar outing away from Minute Maid Park. He held the A's off the board through four innings before allowing a solo homer in the fifth and completely losing control in the sixth. Oakland's three sixth-inning runs came on a pair of bases-loaded walks and a bases-loaded hit by pitch as Keuchel fired surrendered a season-worst four free passes overall. He'll look to bounce back at home against Seattle on Saturday.
Sep 4 2017Keuchel (12-3) allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five batters through 7.2 innings during Monday's win over Seattle. After three strong outings (three earned runs allowed over 20.2 innings), Keuchel was hammered by the Rangers last time out, so it was reassuring to see the lefty pitch well Monday. With the Astros pushing for the best record in the American League and beefing up their roster for the stretch drive, Keuchel is positioned to finish 2017 strong. He takes a 2.88 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 7.5 K/9 into his next start against the Athletics at Oakland Coliseum.
Aug 30 2017Keuchel (11-3) suffered a loss to the Rangers on Wednesday after allowing six runs on five hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out seven.Keuchel was 9-0 with a 1.67 ERA and a 69:18 K:BB when he hit the DL back in early June; over seven starts since returning, he's gone 2-3 with a 5.35 ERA and a 28:17 K:BB over 38.2 innings. If you're looking for a silver lining, perhaps Wednesday's strikeouts and the fact that all the runs against him came in one inning (the fourth) will be of some comfort. Also promising is that his next start is slated to come Sunday against the Mets, who don't have much of an offense left to speak of these days. Better yet, Keuchel will get to make that home start back in Houston; Wednesday's "home" game was played at the Rays' stadium in St. Petersburg, Fla., thanks to the flooding in Texas from Hurricane Harvey.
Aug 24 2017Keuchel allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts over seven innings in a no-decision Thursday against Washington.Keuchel pitched well enough to earn his third straight quality start, but he was outmatched by six shutout innings from Stephen Strasburg. He has now allowed just three runs over his past 20.2 innings and has lowered his ERA to 2.58. This comes after a three start stretch in which he served up three homers and 14 runs over just 12 innings. After Thursday's solid outing, it seems safe to say his cold streak is well in the past.
Aug 19 2017Keuchel (11-2) allowed three hits and a walk while striking out three over seven scoreless innings to record his second straight victory in Friday's 3-1 win over Oakland.Keuchel returned to his early-season form Friday, inducing 17 groundball outs. Just two of the 24 batters the left-hander faced hit a ball into the outfield. This was Keuchel's second straight strong outing and the 100 pitches was a high-water mark since returning from a neck injury. He's next scheduled to pitch in Thursday's series finale agianst the Nationals at home in Minute Maid Park.
Aug 13 2017Keuchel said his in-between starts work heading into Sunday's start is the best he's had since the first couple of months of the season, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. "This is probably the best three or four days in between (starts) since the first couple months (of the season)," he said on Saturday. "So I have no doubt that tomorrow's going to be a lot different than the first three."The great mystery in Houston is where is the version of Keuchel that showed up for the first 11 starts, when the left-hander posted a 1.67 ERA over 75.2 innings before going on the disabled list with a neck injury. In the three starts since his return from the DL, Keuchel has allowed as many earned runs (14) as he did over the first 11 starts. Manager A.J. Hinch said Keuchel hasn't been controlling contact on the ground over these last three starts, implying that he's been leaving the sinker up.
Aug 13 2017Keuchel (10-2) earned the victory Sunday, allowing one earned run on six hits across 6.2 innings to the Rangers. He walked three and struck out seven in the 2-1 win.Keuchel is the second Astros pitcher to reach double-digit wins this season after Brad Peacock accomplished that feat on Aug. 4. Though he issued three free passes, Sunday served as a nice bounce-back for Keuchel after he was torched for eight earned runs on 10 hits (four innings) in his last start against the White Sox. The Astros' ace is slated to face the Athletics at home in his next start Friday.
Aug 8 2017Keuchel (9-2) allowed eight runs on 10 hits and three walks while striking out two over four innings during Tuesday's loss to the White Sox.Keuchel entered Tuesday's game against the rebuilding White Sox with a 2.15 ERA but exited four innings later with a 2.87 ERA in what was easily his worst start in years. The lefty gave up four hits in the first inning and four more in the third before being yanked from the game after four innings with eight earned runs to his name. Keuchel has now allowed 14 earned runs in his last three starts (12 innings) since returning from the disabled list on July 28. He'll look to right the ship when he takes on the Rangers in Arlington on Sunday.
Aug 2 2017Keuchel (9-1) took his first loss of the season Wednesday against the Rays, lasting only five innings while allowing three runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts. That's two concerning performances in a row since coming off the DL for Keuchel, who only lasted three innings last Friday against the Tigers in his return from a nerve issue in the neck. He was limited to 87 pitches in this one and posted a season-low strikeout total. On the bright side, Keuchel went mostly unscathed after Logan Morrison tagged him for a two-run homer in the first inning and maintaining the 1.04 home ERA he had coming into this start was always going to be unlikely. He'll have an extra day to rest with Houston off Monday, which should allow the lefty to be back to full strength prior to Tuesday's road date with the White Sox.
Jul 29 2017Keuchel gave up three runs on six hits and three walks over three innings Friday but escaped with a no-decision in a 6-5 win over the Tigers. He struck out three. On the shelf for almost two months due to a nerve issue in his neck, Keuchel showed more than a little rust in his return to action, but a Josh Reddick homer in the top of the eighth inning saved the lefty from his first loss of the year. Keuchel at least threw 79 pitches (45 strikes) Friday, which should allow him to handle a full workload in his next start Wednesday at home against the Rays.
Jul 28 2017Keuchel (neck) was reinstated from the 10-day DL prior to Friday's start against the Tigers.Keuchel will make his return to the mound for the first time since June 2 after competing in a couple rehab assignments over the past few weeks. It remains to be seen whether the left-hander will be restricted by a pitch count after only throwing 62 during his rehab outing Saturday, but fantasy owners will take solace in the fact that Keuchel's finally back on the mound after a lengthy stay on the DL.
Jul 26 2017Keuchel (neck) will be activated from the 10-day DL on Friday prior to his start against the Tigers, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. This will be Keuchel's first start in nearly two months after suffering a neck injury in early June. The left-hander made two rehab appearances in the minors, totaling eight innings while allowing just one run off five hits. He is likely facing a pitch count after only tossing 62 pitches during his longest rehab outing, but Keuchel appears to be fully capable with his entire arsenal on the mound for Friday's return. Collin McHugh and Lance McCullers will take the mound Saturday and Sunday, respectively, for the other two games of the series.
Jul 24 2017Keuchel (neck) will make his next start in the big leagues either Friday or Saturday, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. The stud southpaw appeared in two rehab starts and only got his pitch count to 62 in those appearances, but the Astros apparently are confident that he can handle jumping back to the big leagues already. The exact date has yet to be determined, but either way he'll be making his next start against the Tigers this weekend. Collin McHugh will slot in on whichever date Keuchel doesn't appear.
Jul 23 2017Manager A.J. Hinch said a decision regarding the next step for Keuchel (neck) will not be disclosed until Monday, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.Keuchel made his second rehabilitation start Saturday, pushing his pitch count up to 62 while throwing five innings for short-season Tri City. The Astros could activate the left-hander in time for next weekend's series against the Tigers, but it wouldn't be surprising to have him throw one more rehab start to get that pitch count north of 80 before activating him.
Jul 22 2017Keuchel (neck) built his pitch count up to 62 (48 strikes) in what was likely his final rehab start Saturday for short-season Tri-City, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. He allowed a run on three hits and zero walks while striking out five in five frames.Keuchel is expected to rejoin the big-league rotation Friday in Detroit, although given his pitch count in this final rehab outing, it seems unlikely that he will be able to throw more than around 90 pitches in his first start off the DL. The 29-year-old southpaw has a 1.67 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 69 strikeouts in 75.2 innings this season. He is expected to face a Tigers team that has already traded J.D. Martinez and could move another impact bat (Ian Kinsler is being shopped) before Friday's game.
Jul 21 2017Keuchel (neck) will make Saturday's rehab start with short-season Tri-City, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. It was previously unknown where the ace left-hander would be making his upcoming rehab start. Keuchel will presumably be stretched out to four or five innings in his upcoming start in an effort to get him ready for major-league starts. No word has come as to when he's expected to return, although if this rehab start goes well, Keuchel would be lined up perfectly to make a start June 28 for the series opener in Detroit.
Jul 19 2017Keuchel (neck) will make another rehab appearance Saturday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. It hasn't been determined where Keuchel will be making his next rehab appearance, but the southpaw could be nearing the end of his lengthy recovery. He tossed three innings with Double-A Corpus Christi on Monday, and threw a bullpen session Wednesday in order to keep his active prior to his upcoming start. Keuchel will likely throw a little bit more than he did during Monday's start for whichever one of Houston's affiliates he winds up playing with.
Jul 19 2017Keuchel (neck) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Hunter Atkins and Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle report. After Keuchel throws Wednesday, the Astros will evaluate the left-hander and determine the date of his next rehabilitation start. He tossed three innings in his first rehab start and will require at least one more outing in the minor leagues.
Jul 18 2017Keuchel (neck) scattered two hits and a walk over three scoreless innings in a rehabilitation start for Double-A Corpus Christi on Monday.Keuchel ran his pitch count up to 46, 30 for strikes, in what was the first start of a rehab assignment that's expected to span two or three outings.
Jul 15 2017Keuchel (neck) will make a rehab start with Double-A Corpus Christi on Monday, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.Keuchel is set to toss at least two innings of work with Corpus Christi after pitching a simulated game Thursday. The southpaw has been out since the beginning of June, but appears to be nearing his return. Depending on the results of his rehab outing, Keuchel could make his next appearance at the major-league level.
Jul 14 2017Keuchel (neck) threw two simulated innings in a bullpen session Thursday, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. The Astros will wait and see how Keuchel responds to Thursday's activity before deciding on the next step. Manager A.J. Hinch suggested Keuchel may just need one rehab start in the minors to prepare for a return to the major-league rotation. The lefty looked to be back to his Cy Young form before landing on the DL as he went a perfect 9-0 with a minuscule 1.67 ERA and 0.87 WHIP over 75.2 innings.
Jul 12 2017Keuchel (neck) is slated to throw a more intensive bullpen session within the next couple days, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.Keuchel threw a successful bullpen session Sunday, so this next step could be a major determinant as to pinpointing a timetable for his return. Manager A.J. Hinch said earlier that the ace starter would need a couple rehab starts prior to joining the rotation, so expect a return sometime later this month, barring any setbacks.
Jul 10 2017Keuchel threw more than 30 pitches Sunday during his first bullpen session since re-injuring his neck from a pinched nerve in early June, Hunter Atkins of the Houston Chronicle reports. The left-hander reported no pain following the session, an encouraging sign for manager A.J. Hinch, who feels Keuchel will need at least one and maybe two rehabilitation starts before returning to the majors.
Jul 9 2017Keuchel (neck) will throw a bullpen session on Sunday and will require one or two minor-league rehab starts before rejoining the Astros' rotation, Hunter Atkins of the Houston Chronicle reports.Manager A.J. Hinch reported that Keuchel would begin his minor-league rehab assignment following the All-Star break. Based on the estimate of one-to-two rehab starts, it appears that Keuchel is on track to rejoin the Astros' rotation during the latter part of July.
Jul 4 2017Manager A.J. Hinch said the hope is that Keuchel (neck) will be able to pitch off a mound in Toronto over the weekend, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.Keuchel continues to slowly work his way back from a neck issue that has kept him sidelined since June 8. If he is able to progress to mound work over the weekend with no issues, it would likely clear the way for him to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment shortly after. The Astros are still leading the American League by a good amount, so they likely won't be rushing their ace back.
Jun 29 2017Keuchel (neck) will try to throw off the mound this weekend, MLB.com's Brian McTaggart reports.Although Keuchel is unlikely to return until after the All-Star break, the southpaw wants to get back on the mound against the Blue Jays next weekend. The key here will be if Keuchel is able to provide a good showing off the mound this weekend, but even in that case, he would likely need a rehab start before coming back to the big leagues. With the Astros leading the way in the American League by a healthy margin, it remains a safe bet that their ace will remain out until after the All-Star Game.
Jun 25 2017Keuchel (neck) is likely to be out until after the All-Star break, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.Although the southpaw has began throwing at 120 feet, he has yet to make any pitches on a mound, causing the Astros to be realistic about his return date. Since the team has little reason to rush their ace back into the fold, it becomes more and more likely that he will be out until the end of the All-Star break, placing his return around July 14.
Jun 21 2017Keuchel (neck) played catch Tuesday for a second consecutive day, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. The Astros have not set a day for when Keuchel will throw off a mound in a bullpen session but haven't ruled out it happening during the team's current road trip. That suggests the left-handed ace will not return to the rotation until next week at the earliest.
Jun 20 2017Keuchel (neck) played catch Monday for the first time since he was scratched from a start in Kansas City on June 7, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.Keuchel did not meet with reporters following the session, but manager A.J. Hinch did. "It's very early in his progress," Hinch said of Keuchel. "Playing catch is playing catch. The next step would be playing catch a little harder and a little further." The more telling test of his progress will come when Keuchel throws off a mound.
Jun 19 2017Keuchel (neck) will start playing catch Monday in Oakland where the Astros kick off a seven-game road trip, Mark Eisenhauer of the Houston Chronicle reports. This will be the first time Keuchel has thrown since the left-hander was scratched from a start June 7. The fact that he's with the team on the road suggests he may return at some point over the next week, but we'll learn more after Monday's session.
Jun 18 2017Keuchel (neck) will join his teammates when Houston goes on the road for a seven-game road trip beginning Monday in Oakland, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.Going on the road with the team suggests Keuchel could return at some point on the trip, but as of Saturday, the left-hander had yet to resume throwing. Manager A.J. Hinch said he was "pretty confident" Brad Peacock, Francis Martes and Mike Fiers would start the first three games in Oakland, leaving one of the games on the second half of the trip as a possible landing spot for Keuchel.
Jun 16 2017Keuchel (neck) is expected to throw sometime in the next couple days, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. This is consistent with prior reports, as it seems like the Astros' ace just needed some time off to let his neck heal properly. It's unclear how long Keuchel will need to rehab before rejoining the rotation, although more information should come forth once he's able to ramp up his throwing over the weekend. If he improves quickly enough, he could get back into action in time for his scheduled start Wednesday against the Athletics.
Jun 10 2017Keuchel will be shut down for a week to allow the discomfort in his neck to subside and there is a chance he'll only miss 1-to-2 starts, Richard Justice of MLB.com reports. It appears that the Astros will exercise extra caution with their ace during his DL stint and make sure his neck is fully healed before letting Keuchel resume throwing. Assuming everything goes according to plan, Keuchel should be able to pick up a ball at some point next weekend, at which point there figures to be a firmer timetable for his return. Keuchel's absence leaves a major hole in the Astros rotation, but the club should be getting some reinforcements in the near future with Joe Musgrove and Charlie Morton nearing returns.
Jun 10 2017Keuchel will be shut down for a week to allow the discomfort in his neck to subside but there is a chance he'll only miss 1-to-2 starts, Richard Justice of MLB.com reports. It appears that the Astros will exercise extra caution with their ace during his DL stint and make sure his neck is fully healed before letting Keuchel resume throwing. Jun 8 2017Keuchel (neck) will head back to the disabled list Thursday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.Keuchel takes a place on the disabled list for the second time in the last two weeks, with more discomfort stemming from his neck, which was the reason the southpaw hit the DL in the first place. After being scratched due to an illness for his expected start Wednesday, it seems as though Keuchel has still failed to completely recover from the pinched nerve in his neck. The 29-year-old saw doctors in Houston this morning, and there is no timetable on his return at this moment.
Jun 7 2017Keuchel was scratched from his start Wednesday against the Royals due to an illness, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.Dayan Diaz will draw his first major-league start in Keuchel's place. Keuchel was looking to go 10-0 to start the season, but that will have to wait until his illness subsides. If he's feeling better in the coming days, it's possible the Astros will move his next scheduled start forward.
Jun 3 2017Keuchel (9-0) allowed three hits and two walks while striking out seven over six scoreless innings in Friday's 7-1 win over Texas.Keuchel was unfazed by a rain delay and breezed through five innings before running into a spot of bother in the sixth. With Houston up, 3-0, the left-hander allowed couple of a singles and a walk to load the bases, but snuffed out the threat when he got Rougned Odor on a harmless groundout to first. Keuchel, who lowered his ERA to 1.67, became the first Astros pitcher to start a season 9-0 since Roger Clemens in 2004. His next turn on the bump comes Wednesday at Kansas City.
May 27 2017Keuchel (neck) was activated from the 10-day disabled list and is expected to start Saturday against the Orioles, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. As expected, Keuchel was brought off the disabled list ahead of his scheduled start Saturday. Keuchel, who has compiled a 7-0 record with a 1.84 ERA and 0.84 WHIP through nine starts this season, will face off against Wade Miley and the Orioles in his first game back.
May 27 2017Keuchel (8-0) allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out eight over six innings in Saturday's 5-2 win over the Orioles.Keuchel, who threw just 86 pitches, could have gone longer but was fresh off the disabled list and reached his pitch limit. He pounded the bottom of the zone with his sinker, showing no signs of rust after not having pitched in 11 days. With the win, Keuchel lowered his ERA to 1.81, bettering the pace he set though 10 games during his 2015 Cy Young Award-winning campaign (1.90). He's next scheduled to pitch Friday against the Rangers on an extra day's rest.
May 26 2017Manager A.J. Hinch announced that he expects Keuchel (neck) to come off the disabled list to start Saturday's game against the Orioles, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.Keuchel has been rumored as a potential starter for Saturday throughout the week, but Hinch's comments Friday all but confirm that the Astros will be getting their ace back for the second game of their series against Baltimore. Provided that Keuchel is back Saturday, he'll have only missed one turn in the rotation as a result of the pinched nerve in his neck. Keuchel has regained his Cy Young form this season, notching a 7-0 record on the strength of a 1.84 ERA and a 0.84 WHIP.
May 25 2017Keuchel (neck) is not yet listed as the probable starter for Saturday's game against Baltimore, according to MLB.com. As of early Thursday evening, Houston's expected starter is listed as To Be Announced. All signs the last two days suggested Keuchel would be activated to pitch Saturday, but the Astros are leaving some wiggle room. We'll likely get confirmation of Saturday's probable starter Friday.
May 24 2017Keuchel (neck) played catch Wednesday and said he's on track to start Saturday, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.Keuchel, who is eligible to return from the disabled list Saturday, has picked up his activity this week after missing a start Monday. Manager A.J. Hinch isn't ready to commit to him starting Saturday but told reporters that the left-hander is "going in the right direction" and that there's nothing to "decide until Friday."
May 23 2017Keuchel (neck) was scheduled to play catch Tuesday, Brian McTaggart of the Astros' official site reports. While we haven't learned any details about Keuchel's throwing session, manager A.J. Hinch did say he was progressing nicely. The Astros will evaluate Keuchel the day after his session and will be in a better position to determine what exactly his availability is going to be. He's eligible to be activated off the disabled list Saturday.
May 23 2017Keuchel (neck) has not thrown since being placed on the 10-day disabled list, Hunter Atkins of the Houston Chronicle reports. An expected date for Keuchel to begin throwing has not yet been set, although the left-hander is presumed to be able to start when he's eligible to come off the disabled list Saturday.
May 20 2017Keuchel was placed on the 10-day disabled list Saturday with a pinched nerve in his neck, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. On the bright side, the move is retroactive to Wednesday, so the team only expects the ace to miss one start. Keuchel has put together a resurgence to stardom this season, leading the American League with a 1.84 ERA and compiling an impressive 54:14 K:BB. It's unclear who will take his spot for his projected start against Detroit on Monday, but it's safe to expect the southpaw back in the rotation next Saturday against the Orioles. Relief pitcher Ashur Tolliver was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move.
May 16 2017Keuchel (7-0) allowed two runs on four hits while striking out five over five innings in Tuesday's 12-2 win over Miami. The Marlins reached Keuchel for a couple of first-innings runs on soft contact, but the left-hander quickly settled in and shut down Miami over the next four innings. The Astros put up crooked numbers in four of the first five innings to take an eight-run lead, which made it an easy and early night for Keuchel, who has now given up two or fewer runs in eight of his nine starts. His next appearance comes Monday against the Tigers.
May 12 2017Keuchel (6-0) allowed one unearned run on five hits and a walk while striking out nine batters during Thursday's win over the Yankees. After a tough-luck outing against the Angels last time out, Keuchel was dominant Thursday. He has allowed more than one run in just two outings all season and sports an elite 1.69 ERA and 0.87 WHIP. He's never been a huge contributor in the strikeout department, but his 7.7 K/9 and 22.8 strikeout percentage move the fantasy needle. The crafty lefty is back among the high-end hurlers after a poor 2016 campaign, and Keuchel will look to stay hot on the road against Miami in his next start.
May 6 2017Keuchel allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five over eight-plus innings in Friday's 7-6 extra-inning win over the Angels.Keuchel pitched much better than his line suggests. Through eight innings, the Astros ace had allowed two runs and four hits. And much of that was high-intensity work as Houston managed just two hits and were held to one run through six innings. With Keuchel's pitch count at 95 and the Astros leading, 6-2, manager A.J. Hinch sent him out for the bottom of the ninth. When the left-hander allowed three straight hits to start the inning, Hinch brought in closer Ken Giles to shut down the rally, but he allowed three more hits and the Angels forced extra innings, negating what would have been Keuchel's sixth win of the season. Despite the number of runs allowed, it was another stellar performance out of Keuchel, whose ERA rose to 1.88. His next turn in the rotation comes next Thursday in New York to face the Yankees, but with a day off coming Monday, the Astros could keep him on a five-day routine and have him pitch the series finale against the Braves on Wednesday.
Apr 30 2017Keuchel (5-0) allowed a single run on just three hits and two walks while striking out nine batters over 7.2 innings during Sunday's win over Oakland. The southpaw's rebound campaign continues to gain momentum, and Keuchel sports a high-end 1.21 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 7.25 K/9. The uptick in strikeouts was encouraging Sunday, and with ace pitchers dropping like flies around the league, Keuchel return to his Cy Young form has been all the more valuable. He'll look to stay undefeated against the Angels in his next start.
Apr 25 2017Keuchel improved to 4-0 with a complete-game victory in Cleveland on Tuesday, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts. He's off to quite the start, having given up just five earned runs in 37 innings. This is certainly vindicating those who bought in on Keuchel following a hugely disappointing 2016 campaign, but a note of caution is required: Keuchel's ridiculously good numbers are accompanied by a .188 BABIP and perfect strand rate, two impressively unsustainable statistics. His next start will come Sunday at home against Oakland; Keuchel held the A's to one run over seven innings back on April 14.
Apr 20 2017Keuchel (3-0) allowed only one run on eight hits and a walk while striking out seven over seven innings in Wednesday's 5-1 win over the Angels. It was vintage Keuchel, as he threw 65 of 99 pitches for strikes and induced three double plays to snuff out any offensive momentum the Angels threatened to build. The lefty now has a 0.96 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 22:6 K:BB through 28 innings and will look to extend his quality start streak to five Tuesday in Cleveland.
Apr 15 2017Keuchel (2-0) gave up an earned run on four hits and two walks over seven innings in Friday's 7-2 win over the Athletics. He struck out seven.Keuchel's now boasts an 0.86 ERA through three starts, with the 29-year-old lefty giving up only his second run of the season in the second on a home run by Khris Davis. It turned out to be Keuchel's only mistake of the night, as he turned in a third straight seven-inning effort in as many trips to the mound to open 2017. The southpaw has done a particularly effective job of keeping the ball down, with his groundball/flyball ratio now at 40:15 through 21 innings. Keuchel will try to keep the momentum going in a Wednesday home matchup against the Angels.
Apr 9 2017Keuchel allowed one run on two hits and one walk while striking out four over seven innings in Saturday's 7-3 loss to the Royals.Keuchel pitched brilliantly and efficiently (93 pitches, 61 strikes) before leaving the game to the capable right arm of Luke Gregerson who submitted a career-worst performance. A win was snatched away from the Astros ace, but we like to accentuate the positive. It was a second straight dominating start for Keuchel, whose shoulder was a major concern during spring training. Gregerson, quite obviously, was the culprit Saturday, but Houston hitters are doing little to support the starters. The Astros are hitting .227 (22nd) over their first six games and have scored three or fewer runs in five of those games.
Apr 8 2017Keuchel threw a total of 15 changeups during his Opening Day start against the Mariners, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. The left-hander all but abandoned the pitch last season when he pitched through a shoulder injury. The return of Keuchel's changeup, his third most frequent pitch thrown during his Cy Young winning season in 2015, is a positive sign. It's something the Royals will have to keep in mind when facing Keuchel on Saturday night at Minute Maid Park.
Apr 3 2017Keuchel pitched seven shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out four to beat the Mariners on Monday. It's a great sign for the 2015 American League Cy Young winner after he regressed significantly last season and dealt with rotator cuff issues in his left shoulder. There remains some risk because of the fact that he doesn't strike out many, but with good health this year, expect Keuchel to improve on his 2016 disappointment.
Mar 29 2017Keuchel allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four over 4.2 innings in Tuesday's game against the Marlins, Brian McTaggart of the Astros' official site reports.Compared to Keuchel's other spring outings, Tuesday's was a bit of a slog for the left-hander. He needed 90 pitches had a few stressful innings. And that can be a good thing -- working with runners on and putting the body through a little stress. Despite Tuesday's results, Keuchel has had a good spring and the shoulder is much better than it was in 2016. He'll be taking the ball Opening Day in Houston against Seattle on April 3rd.
Mar 24 2017The Astros have named Dallas Keuchel as their Opening Day starter, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. The southpaw has held up well since returning from rehab of the rotator cuff issues on his left shoulder. The 2015 AL Cy Young Award winner could wind up a profitable fantasy pick in the middle rounds of mixed drafts, though even with his recent healthy stretch, pitchers with shoulder injuries carry risk, even if it dips below the surface.
Mar 22 2017Keuchel allowed two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out three over five innings in Wednesday's game against Minnesota, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.Other than a lengthy third inning, Keuchel pitched well during his third Grapefruit League start. Overall, the left-hander was pleased that he was able to escape hitter's counts and induce weak contact in the form of nine groundball outs. All signs point to Keuchel taking the ball Opening Day at home against Seattle on April 3.
Mar 18 2017Keuchel threw four scoreless innings Friday against the Braves in his second spring start, Jodie Wagner of the Houston Chronicle reports. "It was a continuation from my last start out, and the stamina was there. I probably could have thrown another inning or two, so that's a good sign," said the left-hander.Keuchel, who pitched three scoreless innings in his Grapefruit League debut against the Nationals last Sunday, allowed three measly singles and didn't walk a batter while striking out two. He got up to 42 pitches, 29 for strikes, and said his fastball command wasn't where he wanted, but it was a positive sign for the hurler who missed the final five weeks of the 2016 season due to shoulder inflammation. He'll make two more spring starts with the goal of hitting six or seven innings in his final one.
Mar 12 2017Keuchel allowed one hit and struck out one over three scoreless innings Sunday against Washington, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. This was his first game action since last August when he was shut down due to an inflamed left shoulder.Houston manager A.J. Hinch said Keuchel's command wasn't as good as it could have been, but the left-hander was efficient against a Nationals lineup that looked very much like the one they'll use during the regular season. Keucheul retired the first six batters before Stephen Drew's dribbler beat an infield shift to lead off the third. If Hinch wants Keuchel to pitch Opening Day, the bearded 29-year-old will get three more starts to build up innings.
Mar 8 2017Keuchel (shoulder) is scheduled to make his Grapefruit League debut Sunday against the Nationals, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. While checking in with team trainers Wednesday morning, Keuchel reported no complications following his 39-pitch simulated game a day earlier, allowing the Astros to clear him for an appearance over the weekend. It's unlikely that Keuchel will be asked to cover more than a couple of innings, but he shouldn't face any pitch limits by the time Opening Day arrives. Keuchel is coming off a rough season in which he posted a 4.55 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 168 innings, but with some expected correction in his 68.4 percent strand rate and 16.4 percent HR/FB rate, the lefty looks like a decent bet to deliver a sub-4.00 ERA in 2017.
Mar 7 2017Keuchel (shoulder) threw 39 pitches in a simulated game Tuesday, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.Keuchel indicated that his shoulder checked out well during the session, and assuming that he experiences no soreness out of the ordinary following the outing, he could be cleared to take the hill in Grapefruit League play for the first time this spring. If Keuchel can provide evidence in the spring that the shoulder isn't an issue, he could be a solid bargain in drafts after a disappointing 2016 following his Cy Young-winning campaign of 2015.
Mar 3 2017Keuchel (shoulder) is scheduled to work a simulated game Tuesday, March 7, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. The 29-year-old's recovery from rotator cuff inflammation rumbles on, and making it through this practice affair will probably send him on to starting his five planned Grapefruit League outings. If fantasy players can land him at a discount, it'll mitigate the risk involved with his shoulder and offer a safe chance to land a significant portion of what the southpaw did during his 2015 AL Cy Young season.
Mar 3 2017Keuchel (shoulder) is expected to throw another bullpen session Saturday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. The bullpen will Keuchel's third of the spring and he's come out of the other ones fine. If he's going to start the regular season on the active roster, Keuchel should start facing competition this coming week.
Mar 1 2017Keuchel (shoulder) faced hitters Wednesday for the second time this spring, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.Keuchel seemed fine during the session and had no problems with his delivery. The southpaw is expected to make his first spring start next week as he works his way back from shoulder inflammation which ended his 2016 campaign. Continue to monitor his progress over the coming days.
Feb 26 2017Keuchel (shoulder) faced hitters Sunday for the first time since last August, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. "All went well" during the live batting-practice session, according to Houston manager A.J. Hinch.Keuchel, who finished up the final five weeks of the 2016 season on the disabled list because of a shoulder injury, threw between 35 and 40 pitches Sunday morning. The left-hander is on an individualized throwing program and is not expected to make the first of his five spring starts until the second week of March.
Feb 24 2017Keuchel (shoulder) will throw his first live batting practice session over the weekend, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. The left-hander is set to take an important step toward being ready for Opening Day. The Astros are being careful with the 2015 AL Cy Young Award winner's recovery from left rotator cuff inflammation. He said he tried to pitch through it for just about all of 2016, so better management of the injury -- or any other one moving forward -- could do wonders for his durability. Keuchel could be worth a buy-low gamble in mixed fantasy drafts if he progresses strongly through his five scheduled spring outings.
Feb 21 2017Keuchel (shoulder) isn't expected to make his Grapefruit League debut until early March, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.Keuchel suggested he's not behind the curve in his recovery from a bout of shoulder inflammation that sidelined him late last season, but it sounds like the Astros aren't inclined to overextend him early on in the spring. He already resumed throwing off a mound last week and came through the session without incident, and is still on track to make about five starts during spring training. The former Cy Young award winner saw his numbers decline considerably a season ago, but with some better luck on balls in play and a reduction in his home-run rate closer to what he provided in 2014 and 2015, it's not unrealistic to expect him to turn in a sub-4.00 ERA in 2017.
Feb 14 2017Keuchel (shoulder) had a 20-pitch bullpen session and reported feeling good, Brett Dolan of CBS Houston reports.Keuchel, who should be Houston's Opening Day starter if healthy, was shut down in September of last season with a case of shoulder inflammation. The 2015 Cy Young award winner in American League said he never felt right when he reported to spring training in 2016. He nevertheless took the ball every fifth day -- that's what staff ace's do -- but hitters caught up to all of his pitches, particularly his trademark sinker. The Astros have added some lumber in the offseason, which should help the starting staff, but they'll need Keuchel healthy if they want to contend in the A.L. West.
Jan 30 2017Keuchel (shoulder) plans to throw a bullpen session Thursday at Minute Maid Park in the next phase of his recovery, Jake Kaplan of The Houston Chronicle reports. It will be Keuchel's first time throwing off a mound since August, a major step in his rehab process. The 2015 Cy Young Winner missed the final month of a disappointing 2016 campaign, but says he's in the best shape of his life after the long offseason. Keuchel expects to throw between two and four bullpen session before heading to spring training Feb. 12.
Jan 26 2017Keuchel (shoulder) has been playing catch three times a week for the past few weeks, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. The 2015 AL Cy Young winner, who was shut down in late August last season due to shoulder inflammation, has been steadily progressing his offseason workouts and has thrown from 110-115 feet away. He struggled in 2016 before being shut down for the season, posting a 4.55 ERA across 168.0 innings. A healthy Keuchel will look to return to his Cy Young form for the Astros in 2017.
Jan 13 2017Keuchel (shoulder) agreed to a one-year, $9.15 million contract with the Astros on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. The lefty's followup to his Cy Young campaign was disappointing, to say the least. He posted a 4.55 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 7.7 K/9 before being shut down over the final month due to a shoulder injury. Keuchel later revealed that the shoulder issue was something he dealt with all year, but he was cleared of any structural damage and given the green light to resume throwing in December, putting him on track for spring training.
Dec 16 2016Keuchel (shoulder) has been cleared to begin throwing, the Houston Chronicle reports. He was shut down for months but Keuchel plans to begin his normal offseason throwing program before the end of December. Word of shoulder troubles did not surface publicly until early September, but Keuchel revealed this week that the shoulder was a problem all season long which helps explain his loss of velocity and general shakiness throughout the campaign. The lefty is confident that the issue is now firmly behind him.
Sep 20 2016General manager Jeff Luhnow indicated Monday that Kuechel (shoulder) won't throw anytime soon, MLB.com reports. "Still not throwing, so the more days that go by without throwing, the longer it's going to take him to ramp up," Luhnow said. "We'd have to go to pretty deep into the postseason for that even to be a consideration."With that, Keuchel's 2016 season ends with a whimper. His follow-up to last year's Cy Young campaign was a major disappointment, as Keuchel went 9-12 with a 4.55 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 26 starts. The lefty's FIP shot up by nearly a run, as his strikeout and walk rates both went in the wrong direction, but Keuchel was showing some signs of improvement in the second half before going down with the shoulder injury. He will make for an intriguing middle-rounds bounce-back candidate next spring.
Sep 16 2016Keuchel (shoulder) has yet to resume throwing and will not pick up a baseball until next week at the earliest, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. The Houston ace has been battling shoulder inflammation since early September and he still hasn't begun to resume throwing. According to Kaplan, there is some sense that if the Astros flounder this weekend in Seattle and lose more ground in the playoff race, the organization may take the safe route and shut down Keuchel for the rest of the season. Regardless, the best case scenario for Keuchel will be to resume throwing sometime next week.
Sep 9 2016Keuchel has been diagnosed with shoulder inflammation and does not have any structural damage, FOX 26's Mark Berman reports. He has already been ruled out for the next two turns in the rotation, and it's hard to pinpoint when he might be able to return, if he even makes it back at all during the regular season. Keuchel said he wouldn't be able to throw until at least after Sunday, and he will need to take time strengthen the shoulder before returning to the rotation.
Sep 5 2016Keuchel (shoulder) won't start Tuesday's game against the Indians, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.Keuchel has stopped throwing altogether and has left the Astros' road trip and returned to Houston to have his shoulder examined further. The current diagnosis is inflammation, but his status should be updated in the coming days. With Keuchel out Tuesday, Brad Peacock is slated to take the mound against Cleveland.
Sep 5 2016Keuchel (shoulder) will miss his next two starts, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.Keuchel was scratched from Tuesday's scheduled start against the Indians, but it's been announced that he won't start this weekend against the Cubs as well. An estimated return for Keuchel has yet to be announced, as he's been shut down from throwing entirely.
Sep 2 2016Keuchel will not start a game this weekend, and is now scheduled to take the mound Tuesday in Cleveland, Angel Verdejo of the Houston Chronicle reports.Keuchel's scheduled start Friday was pushed back due to fatigue, but he was expected to get the ball either Saturday or Sunday. However, he is still not 100 percent, so he will get a couple more days to rest. Joe Musgrove will start Saturday for the Astros, and Collin McHugh is now lined up to start Sunday.
Aug 31 2016Keuchel will not start Friday as scheduled, but he is still expected to start a game this weekend, Julia Morales of ROOT Sports reports.Manager A.J. Hinch said Keuchel is dealing with fatigue, so he will give him an extra day or two to rest up prior to his next start. Doug Fister will now take the ball Friday, and Keuchel is expected to pitch either Saturday or Sunday.
Aug 28 2016Keuchel (9-12) gave up two earned runs on nine hits and a walk over seven innings in Saturday's 6-2 victory over the Rays. He struck out four. The lefty managed to stay out of trouble against a Rays squad that's often struggled making consistent contact against southpaws this season. Keuchel notched 11 swinging strikes overall and had only one glaring mistake, a 411-foot two-run homer by Bobby Wilson in the fifth. The 28-year-old now has consecutive quality starts, as well as victories in three of his last four trips to the mound. He'll look to keep the momentum going when he takes on the Rangers next Friday.
Aug 22 2016Keuchel (8-12) was impressive Sunday, allowing just two runs on five hits and a walk with seven strikeouts over eight innings to earn the win at Baltimore. The 28-year-old southpaw rebounded from a poor start in his previous outing, reminding everyone that he's still capable of delivering the type of performances that the Astros desperately need if they wish to remain in the American League playoff race. Keuchel, who pitches much better at Minute Maid Park, will face the Rays at home for his next scheduled start Saturday.
Aug 16 2016Keuchel (7-12) allowed six runs on five hits and a walk and struck out seven over five innings in a loss Tuesday to the Cardinals. It's hard to get a handle on Keuchel, who shut out the Rangers in his last start but has given up 13 earned runs in just 10 innings in the two starts surrounding it. He has shown flashes of his old Cy Young self of late, but he's still struggling to keep the ball in the yard -- the final nail in the coffin Tuesday night was a two-run home run by Tommy Pham. Keuchel has now allowed 18 home runs, one more than he allowed in 232 innings last season, and that's a big reason why his ERA is all the way up to 4.76.
Aug 10 2016Keuchel pitched just two innings in Wednesday's game before the rain started and eventually forced a postponement, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.Keuchel will be refunded the five runs he allowed in the contest, dropping his ERA from 4.68 to the 4.56 mark he owned entering the night. The team has yet to announce who else will start Wednesday besides Doug Fister, but it certainly won't be Keuchel.
Aug 5 2016Keuchel (7-11) tossed a three-hit shutout, walking two and striking out seven in Friday's win over the Rangers. The reigning AL Cy Young winner allowed a career-low three hits to notch his fourth MLB shutout. His gem was much-needed after coming off one of his worst starts of the season in which he was tagged for seven runs in five innings Sunday at Detroit. The left-hander improved his ERA to 4.56, its lowest mark since the season's first month. Keuchel's next start is Wednesday in Minnesota against a Twins team that hit him hard back on May 2.
Aug 1 2016Keuchel (6-11) gave up seven runs on seven hits (including two home runs) and three walks over five innings while striking out four in Sunday's loss to the Tigers.James McCann's first-inning grand slam set the tone for what ended up being an 11-0 rout by Detroit. Keuchel didn't have much trouble finding the plate Sunday, throwing 51 of 83 pitches for strikes and starting 18 of 24 batters off with first-pitch strikes, but Tigers hitters punished the mistakes he made in the zone. Keuchel will need to be sharper in his next start at home Friday against another dangerous offense in the Rangers.
Jul 25 2016Keuchel (6-10) allowed two runs on six hits with five strikeouts over 7.2 innings but still took the loss Monday against the Yankees.Keuchel extended his quality start streak to seven, but none of the last three have produced wins. Still, there's lots to like in Keuchel's recent stretch -- he owns a 2.72 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP over those seven starts. However, he has just 34 strikeouts over 46.1 innings in those seven starts, and unless he can find more whiffs, he won't make a full return to his Cy Young form from last season.
Jul 20 2016Keuchel allowed two runs on five hits and three walks with six strikeouts over 6.1 innings in a no-decision Tuesday against Oakland.Keuchel has really figured things out over the past month. All of his past six starts have been quality starts, and he has now gone two straight starts without allowing a home run for the first time since April 26 and May 2. His season ERA is still underwhelming at 4.70, and he hasn't looked like a Cy Young contender, but things are moving in the right direction.
Jul 11 2016Keuchel allowed just one run with five strikeouts and two walks across seven strong innings Sunday versus the Athletics. He did not factor into the decision.Keuchel threw the ball well, as he pounded the zone at a 62% clip and induced nine swinging strikes, but he was on the hook for the loss until Evan Gattis tied the game in the bottom of the ninth. The 2015 Cy Young award winner has struggled to replicate his previous form this season, but he has now pieced together five consecutive quality starts and has lowered his ERA nearly a full run to 4.80. His next outing will come after the All-Star break.
Jul 5 2016Keuchel (6-9) allowed two runs on five hits and a walk with six strikeouts over six innings in a win Tuesday over the Mariners.Keuchel now has a three-game winning streak as he is getting into a groove for the first time all year. That said, even though he has three quality starts in his past four outings, he has given up five home runs in that stretch. Keuchel's 5.02 ERA is in large part driven by a 1.2 HR/9 after he allowed just a 0.7 HR/9 in his Cy Young campaign last season.
Jun 29 2016Keuchel (5-9) pitched six quality innings, allowing two earned runs, six hits and three walks while striking out four in Wednesday's 10-4 win over the Angels.Keuchel gave up a pair of runs in the second inning on a Jett Bandy home run and a Kole Calhoun RBI triple, then settled down to retire 11 of the last 13 batters he faced. This season has been a struggle for Keuchel, but the lefty has won consecutive starts for the first time in 2016. He earned his third straight quality start -- and ninth in 17 outings -- and beat the Angels for the ninth time in his career, his most wins against any club.
Jun 18 2016Keuchel (3-9) allowed two runs on five hits, struck out six and walked none over seven innings in a no-decision against the Reds on Saturday. It was his best outing since May 28 and would have been his first victory since then too, but the Astros bullpen gave up the lead in the ninth before the offense scored the winning run in extra innings. Keuchel now has an excellent 40:4 KK/B ratio in 38.1 innings over his last six starts, yet he owns a 5.17 ERA during that stretch. His next start will be Friday against the Royals.
Jun 12 2016Keuchel (3-9) was derailed by one bad inning Sunday, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks over five innings while striking out nine in a 5-0 loss to the Rays.He traded goose eggs with Matt Moore for four innings, but the wheels came off for Keuchel in the fifth. He's now the first pitcher in the majors to nine losses, and while his 34:4 K:BB in 31.1 innings over his last five starts is excellent, he's still stumbled to a 5.75 ERA over that stretch. Keuchel's next start is scheduled for Sunday at home against the Reds.
Jun 7 2016Keuchel fell to 3-8 Tuesday versus Texas, allowing four runs on 10 hits across 7.1 innings. He struck out eight.Keuchel actually pitched quite well Tuesday, tying a season-high in punchouts and pitching into the eighth inning for just the second time, but he allowed a two-run home run to Ian Desmond with one out in the eight that ultimately decided the game. The left-hander continues to struggle versus the Rangers, as he now has a 8.75 ERA in his last four starts versus the in-state foe. He will look to get back on track Sunday at the Rays.
May 28 2016Keuchel (3-6) allowed two runs on three hits, walked none and struck out five over seven innings in a 4-2 victory over the Angels on Saturday. The two runs he allowed were off back-to-back solo shots from Mike Trout and Albert Pujols in the first inning. After Angels second baseman Johnny Giavotella singled to begin the second, Keuchel retired the last 18 batters he faced. The victory was his first since April 15. Keuchel will make his next start Thursday against the Diamondbacks.
May 22 2016Keuchel (2-6) allowed seven runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out six over six innings to take the loss Sunday against the Rangers.Keuchel gave up five runs in the third inning and never gave the Astros a chance to stay in the contest. He's now allowed at least five runs in five of his last seven outings to raise his ERA to 5.92. He'll make his next start Saturday at the Angels.
May 18 2016Keuchel allowed three runs on six hits and three walks over 6.1 innings with five strikeout in a no-decision Tuesday against the White Sox.Keuchel picked up a quality start and has two in his past three starts. But still, Keuchel just doesn't have the dominant stuff he featured in last year's Cy Young campaign. Tuesday's start marked the sixth time Keuchel has allowed at least three runs in nine starts; in 33 starts last year, he allowed three runs or more just 11 times. It looks like the league has adjusted, but Keuchel was too good last year not to give him a chance to adjust back in turn.
May 12 2016Keuchel (2-5) was rocked for eight runs on 10 hits and three walks in six innings against Boston on Thursday. He struck out four and threw two wild pitches. He's been on a disastrous run of late, having given up five or more runs in four of his last five starts, with the one exception his outing Saturday against Seattle. Last season was a revelation for Keuchel, but the expected regression doesn't explain what's gone wrong this year. His fastball velocity -- never great in the first place -- is down more than a mile per hour from last year, and hitters are doing a better job laying off his breaking stuff while hammering his offerings in the strike zone. If you own him, you may still be able to find a trade partner thanks to the Cy Young Award he won last year; if that option's available to you, take it.
May 2 2016Keuchel (2-4) allowed five runs on seven hits and five walks in 4.1 innings in a loss Monday to the Twins.Hitters have been much more patient with Keuchel this season, as they aren't chasing out of the zone like they did in his Cy Young campaign last year. Keuchel only gave up two extra-base hits, but because he kept filling up the bases via the walk, singles were enough to do the damage. Keuchel has issued 18 walks and his 4.4 BB/9 is more than double last year's mark (2.0). Now that the opposition's made a significant adjustment to him, we have to see if Keuchel can adjust back and remain effective even as hitters spit on his pitches out of the zone.
Apr 27 2016Keuchel (2-3) allowed five runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts over six innings during Tuesday's 11-1 loss at Seattle. The reigning AL Cy Young award winner closes out a rough April with a 4.41 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 27:13 K:BB ratio over 32.2 innings. Keuchel will attempt to right the ship next week after the calendar flips to May with two home starts against the Twins (Monday) and Mariners (Saturday). The 28-year-old southpaw was brilliant at Minute Maid Park last season, going 15-0 with a 1.46 ERA.
Apr 21 2016Keuchel (2-2) had his worst outing of April, yielding six runs on 13 hits over six innings in a loss to the Rangers on Thursday. He also struck out five and walked none.Through his first two starts, Keuchel struck out 13 and walked 10, so it's definitely good to see him find the zone more often, as he has just one walk in his last 14 innings, but the Rangers hitters just took advantage of his strikes Thursday night. Keuchel hadn't given up 13 hits in one game since July 4, 2014. He will look to get back on track Tuesday against Seattle.
Apr 15 2016Keuchel (2-1) pitched eight scoreless innings and allowed only five hits in Friday's 1-0 victory over the Tigers. He walked a batter and struck out four. The 28-year-old southpaw was highly effective against one of the most dangerous lineups in the league, inducing double-digit ground balls (13) for the second straight start. Keuchel was sharp throughout, throwing 72 of his 108 pitches for strikes. Coming off a breakout 20-win season in 2015, Keuchel has generated a 2.18 ERA over 20.2 innings to date in 2016.
Apr 4 2016Keuchel's 2016 debut will be pushed back a day to Tuesday with the news that the Astros' Opening Day matchup with the Yankees has been postponed.Monday's forecast in New York is not promising at all, so the Yankees decided to cancel their first home game of the season and take advantage of a scheduled off day on the schedule. Keuchel's season debut will now come Tuesday rather than Monday, but he is still set for the same matchup with the Yankees and Masahiro Tanaka.
Mar 15 2016Keuchel fired three scoreless innings against the Nationals on Monday, allowing just one hit while striking out four. The reigning AL Cy Young award winner appeared to be in midseason form, breezing through a Nationals' lineup that featured mostly regulars. The 28-year-old southpaw will take the mound for the Astros when they visit the Yankees on Opening Day.
Mar 1 2016Keuchel will be on an adjusted schedule this spring after throwing 246 innings between the regular season and the playoffs last season, Phil Rogers of MLB.com reports. The reigning AL Cy Young award winner is a safe bet to top 200 innings again in 2016, so the Astros are just being careful with his workload this spring.
Feb 20 2016Keuchel will be the Astro's Opening Day starter, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. This comes to absolutely no surprise, but at least confirms what was previously prevailing wisdom. Keuchel won the Cy Young last year, leading the league in wins, innings pitched, ERA+, and WHIP.
Jan 15 2016Keuchel agreed to a one-year, $7.25 million contract with the Astros on Friday, Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports.Keuchel drastically improved his numbers between the 2013 and 2014 seasons, and his success continued into last season as well. The 27-year-old finished the campaign with a 2.48 ERA and 1.02 WHIP with 216 strikeouts over 232 innings, earning him a nice paycheck in his first year of arbitration. He should slot in atop the Astros' rotation once again in 2016.
Dec 3 2015Keuchel was tendered a contract by the Astros on Wednesday, Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports. This comes as no surprise, as the Astros relied heavily upon the Cy Young Award winner last season. Houston will bring him back to be the ace of the rotation once again in 2016 with the hope that he can replicate his 20-8 record and 2.48 ERA he posted in 2015.
Nov 18 2015Keuchel was named the American League Cy Young Award winner by the Baseball Writers' Association of America on Wednesday, MLB.com reports. The 27-year-old lefty edged out David Price for the award on the strength of a 20-8 record, 2.48 ERA and 1.02 WHIP over 232 innings. Keuchel improved his strikeout rate from 2014 by more than five percent, while also trimming his walk rate slightly and maintaining a groundball rate over 60 percent. In fact, he led AL qualifiers in groundball rate for a second straight season (61.7%).
Oct 12 2015Keuchel allowed one run on five hits and three walks with seven strikeouts over seven innings Sunday to earn the win in Game 3 of the ALDS against the Royals. The AL Cy Young Award contender allowed a home run to Lorenzo Cain in the fourth inning, but that was the only damage he allowed as he ultimately helped the Astros take a 2-1 lead in the ALDS. If the series goes five games, Keuchel could be an option for the series finale in Kansas City on Wednesday, albeit he'd be pitching on three days rest for the second time in the 2015 playoffs.
Oct 7 2015Keuchel held the Yankees scoreless over six innings Tuesday, allowing only three hits and a walk while striking out seven to earn the win in the AL Wild Card game.Keuchel's gem was his third scoreless performance against New York is as many outings this season. He also became the first pitcher to turn in a scoreless outing in a postseason game on three days' rest since Josh Beckett threw a shutout against the Yankees in Game 6 of the 2003 World Series. Keuchel is likely to pitch Game 3 of the ALDS against Kansas City on October 11.
Oct 7 2015Keuchel will start Game 3 of the ALDS against the Royals on Sunday, Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle reports.Working on just three days' rest, Keuchel shut out the Yankees over six innings in Tuesday's AL Wild Card game, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out seven. He will be afforded the normal five days of rest this time around before taking the hill opposite Edinson Volquez.
Oct 3 2015Keuchel (20-8) hurled a quality start on Friday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks across six innings while striking out three in a 21-5 win over Arizona.Getting 21 runs of support is a nice way to achieve your first career 20 win season. It very well may put Keuchel in line to win the Cy Young, as many of the other notable candidates don't have more than 18. After being a mid-round draft pick in fantasy leagues this last year, Keuchel may have been the steal of drafts, as he'll surely be a top-20 pitcher going into next year.
Sep 30 2015Keuchel will have his next scheduled start bumped up to Friday, Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports.Keuchel prefers to keep his regular routine, and manager A.J. Hinch will honor his ace's request. As a corresponding result, Colin McHugh will get pushed back to Saturday.
Sep 28 2015Keuchel (19-8) allowed one run on two hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts over seven innings during Sunday's 4-2 win over Texas.Keuchel, who was a perfect 14-0 at home this season, lines up for one more regular season start at Arizona on Saturday. If Houston makes the playoffs, they'll undoubtedly want their ace to pitch in the AL Wild Card game three days later on Tuesday, October 6. It's possible manager A.J. Hinch shuffles his rotation a bit to accommodate this scenario, otherwise Keuchel would pitch the AL Wild Card game on short rest.
Sep 21 2015Keuchel improved to 18-8 with a win Monday against the Angels, as he allowed one run on six hits and a walk over 7.2 innings. He struck out six.Keuchel broke the 200 strikeout milestone Monday night, as he's now up to 203 on the season against just 47 walks. Keuchel now has the AL leads in wins, innings pitched and shutouts (tied with three others) as he makes his push for the American League Cy Young Award, but David Price (17-5, 2.34 ERA, 219 strikeouts) will be tough competition.
Sep 17 2015Keuchel (17-8) was bombarded Wednesday, giving up nine runs on 11 hits in 4.2 innings against the Rangers. He struck out five without walking anyone, but allowed three homers. The Astros have coughed up first place to Texas, and they turned to Keuchel to stop the bleeding in this game, but instead, they got blown out in what was by far the lefty's worst start of the season. This has to be a tough blow for Keuchel's fantasy owners after he got them this far with what's been a magnificent season, only to melt down at a crucial moment, as it's playoff time in nearly all head-to-head formats. He'll try to bounce back against the Angels on Monday.
Sep 11 2015Keuchel was an unlucky loser on Friday, as he allowed three unearned runs on five hits and two walks across six innings in a 3-2 loss to the Angels. He struck out seven.Keuchel has no one to blame but himself as all three of the runs came around after an error that he committed. Luckily for him, it didn't hurt his ERA and his Cy Young numbers are still intact. Keuchel now has a 2.22 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with 192 strikeouts in 29 starts this season. He'll look to build on his Cy Young resume against Texas next Wednesday.
Aug 31 2015Keuchel improved to 16-6 with the win Monday against Seattle as he threw seven innings and allowed just one run on six hits and a walk. He struck out eight. It was another Cy Young quality performance for Keuchel, who extended a quality start streak to six and lowered his ERA to 2.24. This marks the 18th time Keuchel has gone at least seven innings and he has still yet to throw fewer than six innings in any of his 27 starts. He did, however, allow his 10th home run of the year and has ceded the HR/9 lead in the American League for the year to Mike Pelfrey (0.44 to 0.47).
Aug 20 2015Keuchel tossed seven strong innings Wednesday, giving up just two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out five Rays. Both he and opposing starter Nathan Karns -- who actually outpitched Keuchel -- had long since hit the proverbial showers by the time the Astros won in 13 innings, so this marks the first time the lefty's received no decision since the All-Star break. He continues to deliver some of the finest pitching numbers in the American League, though Sonny Gray and David Price can both make competing cases for the Cy Young Award. This race looks like it'll be fun to watch down the stretch.
Aug 14 2015Keuchel (14-6) gave up one run on six hits and a walk while striking out eight over seven innings in a win over Detroit.Keuchel has ranked among the league's elite this season in limiting base runners and preventing runs. Where he has improved over the course of the season is generating punch outs. In his first 12 starts of the season, Keuchel averaged 6.88 K/9. In his last 12 outings, he's racked up 9.0 K/9.
Aug 7 2015Keuchel (13-6) gave up three runs on 10 hits and two walks over 7.2 innings in a 3-1 loss to the A's on Friday.Keuchel struck out only three batters and he struggled getting batters out all game long. Considering the fact he nearly completed the game shows you just how good of a pitcher Keuchel is when he didn't have his best stuff. Being outdueled by Sonny Gray is nothing to be concerned about. He'll look to bounce back in his next start Friday against the Tigers.
Jul 27 2015Keuchel dropped to 12-5 this season after allowing five runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts over 6.2 innings during Sunday's loss to the Royals.Kansas City is one of the top hitting teams against left-handed pitching this season (.272 BA), and while Keuchel didn't walk any batters, he gave up 10 hits including a home run to Lorenzo Cain. The AL All-Star starter will carry a 2.32 ERA into his next scheduled start against Arizona on Saturday.
Jul 20 2015Keuchel (12-4) fired seven shutout innings of two-hit ball against the Rangers on Sunday while striking out a career-high 13 in the Astros' 10-0 win.Keuchel retired the final 18 batters he faced and allowed only three balls out of the infield in a dazzling performance Sunday. The AL All-Star starting pitcher ranks first in the league in wins (12), innings pitched (144.1), ERA (2.12) and WHIP (0.97).
Jul 12 2015Keuchel took the loss Saturday, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks over seven innings, striking out four.It was his fourth straight quality start, and eighth in his last nine outings. Keuchel heads into his first All-Star berth with a 2.23 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and solid 114:34 K:BB ratio in 137.1 innings.
Jul 7 2015Keuchel was named to his first All-Star team on Monday. The 27-year-old southpaw led all AL starters in player balloting with 381 votes, followed by Chris Archer (365 votes), Sonny Gray (352), Chris Sale (306) and David Price (242). That's pretty impressive company for a guy who leads the AL in wins (11), innings pitched (130.1) and ranks second in ERA (2.14). While no announcement has been made official thus far, Keuchel is a serious contender to start the All-Star game for the American League.
Jul 6 2015Keuchel won his 11th game of the season Monday, holding the Indians to three runs over six innings. After consecutive starts without allowing a run, this was something of a down outing for the All-Star. The lefty has been masterful this season, posting a pristine 2.14 ERA and 0.99 WHIP. His next start will come this weekend against the Rays in Tampa.
Jun 30 2015Keuchel improved to 10-3 behind eight shutout innings in Tuesday's win over the Royals. He gave up seven hits, walked none, and struck out seven.Keuchel already owns the league lead with two shutouts and probably could have finished the ninth in a closer game -- with the Astros up four and Keuchel at 106 pitches, Pat Neshek mopped up the ninth. Keuchel now has 17 scoreless innings with 19 strikeouts and one walk since his worst start of the season June 20 against Seattle. His ERA is down to 2.03 as a second consecutive career year continues.
Jun 26 2015Keuchel (9-3) struck out 12 and gave up only six hits and one walk in nine shutout innings Thursday against the Yankees.Keuchel rebounded from his worst start of the season when he allowed five runs and walked four Saturday at Seattle. On Thursday, Keuchel pitched a six-hitter and struck out a career-high 12 in his second shutout in less than a month. The Astros ace gave up six singles and walked one while topping his previous best of 11 strikeouts in a shutout over the White Sox on May 30. The left-hander retired 18 of 19 during one stretch, including 15 straight before Alex Rodriguez's single with two outs in the ninth. Keuchel will look to build on this dominating performance in his next scheduled start Tuesday against the Royals.
Jun 21 2015Keuchel (8-3) gave up five runs on five hits and four walks while striking out seven in Saturday's loss to the Mariners.Fantasy players who rolled Keuchel out in a pitcher-friendly park against what's been a pitcher-friendly lineup were disappointed in a big way Saturday, as he surrendered three home runs and allowed the Mariners to score in four separate innings. There's still room for course correction in his .229 BABIP and slightly elevated strand rate, but Keuchel has been one of the majors' most extreme groundball artists and should continue to post solid results in the Astros' rotation. The lefty will make his next start Friday against the Yankees.
Jun 15 2015Keuchel improved to 8-2 with a quality start win Tuesday over Colorado. He allowed three runs on four hits over 6.2 innings with four strikeouts against two walks.Although Keuchel only struck out four, he induced 14 swinging strikes against the Rockies and paired it with 13 ground balls. Keuchel's approach -- pound the strike zone with a two-seam fastball that eats up bats -- is going to put a ceiling on his strikeouts, but it's also the engine behind Keuchel's brilliant 2.04 ERA this season.
Jun 9 2015Keuchel fell to 7-2 despite a quality start Tuesday against the White Sox. He allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks over seven innings with five strikeouts.Keuchel gave up a two-run home run to Jose Abreu and the offense couldn't do enough against Carlos Rodon to give him a chance to win. Keuchel continues to pitch at an All-Star level, as his ERA sits at 1.90.
Jun 4 2015Keuchel struck out seven while allowing two runs in six innings Thursday against the Orioles. He surrendered six hits and a walk, and didn't receive a decision in the eventual 3-2 loss.Keuchel just keeps on rolling, but with the added benefit of 18 strikeouts to go with the two runs he's given up over 15 innings in his last two starts -- an uncommon spike in whiff rate for the usually contact-heavy hurler. This comes after a stretch in which he allowed four runs in three of four starts. There's still some course correcting to be done to that sparkling 1.85 ERA, but Keuchel's clearly established himself as a strong fantasy rotation option, especially if he can keep up this bat-missing improvement. He again gets the White Sox -- whom he shut out with 11 strikeouts in his last start -- on Tuesday.
May 31 2015Keuchel (7-1) struck out a career-high 11 batters in a complete game four-hit shutout of the White Sox on Saturday.Keuchel, who was an All-Star snub last season, is making a case to start this year's Midsummer Classic over presumed favorites Felix Hernandez, Sonny Gray and Chris Archer. May 25 2015Keuchel went eight innings but gave up four runs on six hits -- including two home runs -- and a walk in a loss to the Orioles on Monday. Keuchel had given up just one home run in 64.1 innings coming into Monday's start. He's still sitting with an ERA under 2.00 and a sub-1.00 WHIP.
May 21 2015Keuchel (6-0) held the A's to an unearned run on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts over seven innings in Wednesday's victory.Keuchel has won eight consecutive decisions dating back to Sept. 14, and his 6-0 start is the best by an Astros pitcher since Roger Clemens went 9-0 to start the 2004 season. He'll try to keep chasing Clemens in Baltimore on Monday.
May 5 2015Keuchel (3-0) held the Rangers to a run on five hits and two walks with eight strikeouts over eight innings Monday, but took no decision as Texas pulled ahead late in the game to beat Houston 2-1.Keuchel certainly pitched well enough to earn his fourth victory of the season, but Houston's offense fell flat Monday night. The 27-year-old left-hander also won the AL Gold Glove award after leading all pitchers with 66 total chances and 47 assists. His remarkable season makes him a candidate to start Opening Day for the Astros, but it's unclear at this point whether he or veteran Scott Feldman will earn the nod.
Sep 21 2014Keuchel has told the Houston Chronicle's Jose de Jesus Ortiz that his pitching coach let him know he will be shut down. This move was expected since Keuchel passed the 200-inning mark for the season. Keuchel ends the season 12-9 with a 2.93 ERA and 1.175 WHIP, a breakout year after two seasons with an ERA above five. Keuchel's 3.21 FIP and 3.20 xFIP also indicate this was no fluke.

Jul 4 2014Keuchel (wrist) has been confirmed as Friday's starter against the Angels.Swelling in Keuchel's left wrist forced the Astros to scratch the 26-year-old from his scheduled start Sunday, but he'll return Friday to oppose left-hander C.J. Wilson. Keuchel has already made two starts against the Angels this season, giving up six runs on 13 hits while striking out 13 and walking three over 13.2 innings in those outings.
Jul 1 2014Keuchel (wrist) will likely pitch Friday at the Angels, Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports. After completing a throwing session Sunday, Keuchel displayed confidence that he may be able to go Thursday. However, the Astros are leaning toward sending out Oberholtzer for the aforementioned nod. Although the situation is fluid at the moment, an extra day of rest couldn't hurt Keuchel's prospects in his first start since June 22.
Jun 30 2014Keuchel (wrist) relayed Monday that "all signs" signify that he'll take the mound Thursday at the Angels, Mike Vernon of MLB.com reports.Between a June 22 start and his scheduled nod Saturday, Keuchel came down with a swollen left wrist, which precipitated donning a soft wrap/cast on the region. His optimism implies that Sunday evening's throwing session went well, but he'll likely have to prove his health in one more bullpen session before the Astros give him the green light.
Jun 29 2014Keuchel will throw Sunday evening, after being scratched from Saturday's start due to swelling in his left wrist, Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports. The Astros are hoping Keuchel will miss just the one start, but manager Bo Porter acknowledged the possibility that the southpaw could eventually land on the disabled list. Keuchel's next outing lines up for Thursday against the Angels in Anaheim, and if the wrist is still an issue, he will likely be replaced by Brett Oberholtzer again.
Jun 28 2014Keuchel is wearing a soft wrap/cast on his inflamed wrist and is hopeful to make his next start, the Houston Chronicle's Evan Drellich reports. He had an MRI, so the fact he's still hopeful to start next week is a good sign, but it's certainly not guaranteed. He was scratched from Saturday's start with swelling in his left wrist and Brett Oberholtzer made the spot start, and would seemingly stay in the rotation if Keuchel missed another start.
Jun 27 2014Keuchel has been scratched from his scheduled start Saturday due to swelling in his left wrist, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. The swelling has been present since Keuchel's most recent bullpen session. Jun 18 2014Keuchel fell to 8-4 this season with a loss to the Nationals on Tuesday, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks with four strikeouts over five innings.Keuchel, who had gone at least six innings in 12 straight starts prior to Tuesday, needed 105 pitches (65 for strikes) to make it through five innings against the Nationals. His four walks were a season-high and he also permitted more fly balls (11) during the game than he induced grounders (six). That's not very typical of Keuchel, who has a 3.56 GB/FB ratio this season. He'll look to rebound from this poor outing against the Rays in Tampa on Sunday.
Jun 12 2014Keuchel earned his eighth win of the season Wednesday night, permitting only one run on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts over eight innings in the Astros' 5-1 win over the Diamondbacks."If he's not an All-Star, what is?" May 31 2014Keuchel lost his first game in five starts on Saturday, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts over six innings against the Orioles.Keuchel (6-3) delivered a quality start Saturday, but was a victim of poor run support as the Astros only scored one against Chris Tillman and the Orioles. Houston recently employed a six-man starting rotation, so Keuchel's next scheduled start won't come until Saturday at Minnesota.
May 28 2014Keuchel will start Saturday, not Friday, against the Orioles, the Houston Chronicle's Jose de Jesus Ortiz reports. The Astros appear to be going with a six-man rotation, at least in the short term, which is the reason for the new start date for Keuchel. He has been a revelation so far this season, but his fantasy value will be very slightly depressed as long as the team uses the six-man rotation.
May 25 2014Keuchel earned his sixth win in a complete game, four-hit shutout of the Mariners on Sunday. He struck out six.Keuchel (6-2) has won four straight starts, recording two complete games and a 1.05 ERA during that span. The 26-year-old lefty has been the lone bright spot of the Astros' starting rotation through the first two months of the season, and an All-Star appearance could be in his future if he continues to pitch like he has been. Up next, however, is a tough home start against Baltimore on Friday.
May 20 2014Keuchel nearly pitched his second complete game in a row on Monday, but settled for 8.2 dominant innings, during which he allowed two runs on five hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in a win over the Angels.Keuchel (5-2) induced 16 groundball outs in the game compared to only two fly balls, as his 67.7 percent ground ball percentage leads MLB among qualified pitchers. May 14 2014Keuchel went the distance, striking out seven in a complete game seven-hit shutout of the Rangers on Tuesday.Keuchel, who improved to 4-2 this season after the decisive 8-0 victory, has been a pleasant surprise for Houston and fantasy owners alike. Things appears to be clicking on all cylinders for Keuchel, who will carry a 3.06 ERA into his next scheduled start Monday at Anaheim.
May 10 2014Keuchel appeared as a pinch-runner and scored a run in the Astros' 5-4 loss to the Orioles on Saturday.Keuchel entered the game in the top of the ninth inning as a pinch-runner for Marc Krauss, who doubled off Tommy Hunter. He advanced to third on a fielder's choice by Jonathan Villar, but would come around to score on a single by Jose Altuve. The 26-year-old left-hander remains on track for his next scheduled start Tuesday against Texas.
May 8 2014Keuchel (3-2) struck out seven without a walk and allowed just two runs on six hits over 7.2 innings in Thursday's win over Detroit.Don't look now, but Keuchel's sitting on a 40:11 K:BB through 43 innings this season, and his other peripherals -- like his FIP and xFIP, lowered to 3.28 and 2.85, respectively, by this outing -- are very promising. His strikeouts are up, his walks are down, his BABIP has normalized, and his ground-ball rate leads all of MLB. In short, it's time to start giving Keuchel his due. He'll draw a home start against the Rangers next week.
May 3 2014Keuchel pitched well through six innings Saturday, but did not record an out in the seventh and was charged with four runs on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts in the Astros' 9-8 loss to the Mariners.Through six starts, Keuchel is 2-2 with a 3.96 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with a 33:11 K:BB in 36.1 innings. He's scheduled to make his next start Wednesday at home against the Royals.
Mar 26 2014Keuchel will open the season as the No. 5 starter in the Astros' rotation, Brian McTaggert of MLB.com reports.Keuchel's spring ERA of 5.82 hasn't exactly been encouraging, but he'll get the chance to take the mound for the Astros on every fifth day nonetheless. Even if he hangs on to the job for a while, he likely won't be a quality fantasy option.
Mar 18 2014Keuchel was roughed up by the Marlins on Tuesday, surrendering seven runs on 13 hits with no walks and a strikeout over four innings.Among the 13 hits that Keuchel allowed was a three run home run to Giancarlo Stanton. The disastrous outing comes on the heels of a nine inning scoreless streak over three spring appearances. That considered, Keuchel should maintain his standing as a favorite in the competition for a starting rotation spot with the Astros.
Mar 13 2014Keuchel allowed six hits over four scoreless innings Thursday against the Blue Jays.He struck out two in the game and did not permit a walk. Astros' manager Bo Porter already said Keuchel's experience gave him an advantage in the competition for rotation spots, and the left-hander is on his way to earning one of those spots with his performance thus far. His scoreless streak now stands at nine innings over three spring appearances.
Mar 8 2014Keuchel did not allow a hit over three scoreless innings Saturday against the Phillies. The 26-year-old southpaw struck out two and walked one in the game. He's certainly making a favorable impression as he competes for a spot in the Astros' starting rotation out of camp.
Feb 24 2014Astros manager Bo Porter said that Keuchel's experience gives the lefty an advantage in the competition for rotation spots, the Astros' official website reports. While his experience may provide an advantage, Keuchel doesn't have a whole lot else to offer. He should be able to eat some innings as a back-of-the-rotation starter or long reliever, but his career 5.20 ERA and 6.06 K/9 don't hint at an intriguing ceiling. He is good at getting ground balls and avoiding walks, but Keuchel seems to give up a lot of hard contact, as one might expect from a pitcher with borderline stuff.
Sep 25 2013Keuchel was roughed up by the Rangers on Wednesday, surrendering seven runs (six earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out five over 5.2 innings.Keuchel was actually pitching well through three innings before imploding to the tune of five runs in the fourth. September hasn't been kind to the lefty, as he has given up five or more earned runs in three of his last four starts. He finishes the season with an ERA north of five for the second consecutive year.

Sep 14 2013Keuchel earned the win against the Angels on Friday despite allowing six runs on 10 hits and two walks with nine strikeouts over 5.2 innings. It was another rough outing for the 25-year old southpaw who has now allowed 11 runs over his last two starts (nine innings) but with another nine strikeouts tonight, he now has a 20:6 K:BB over his last three starts. His strikeouts haven't been consistent though and given his 5.17 ERA over 21 starts this season, he is not someone you can trust in your rotation.
Sep 7 2013Keuchel coughed up five runs on 10 hits and two walks with three strikeouts over just 3.1 innings against the A's on Friday.Keuchel had thrown a pair of quality starts in the two outings prior to this one, but has now allowed four or more runs in four of his last six appearances. He'll look to rebound next week, but he's facing the Angels, against whom he has a 5.11 ERA over three appearances (two starts) this season.
Aug 31 2013Keuchel held the Mariners to three runs on four hits over seven innings Saturday, but he still suffered the loss.He allowed three runs in the first inning, but then he faced a minimal 18 batters from the second through seventh innings. Unfortunately for him, opposing starter Joe Saunders held the Astros' bats extremely quiet Saturday evening, so Keuchel's 8 K's went unrewarded. It has been back-to-back strong starts for Keuchel, and he could solidify his spot in the 2014 rotation with an impressive September.
Aug 26 2013Keuchel shut down the Blue Jays on Sunday, throwing seven scoreless frames on four hits and three walks to go with two strikeouts. However, he received a no-decision, as the Astros' bullpen blew the game in the ninth.Keuchel put it all together for the first time in six appearances, but in the interim, he posted no quality starts with an unsightly 8.06 ERA and 15:7 K:BB ratio in 22.1 innings. The inconsistent southpaw is expected to take the hill Saturday versus the Mariners, who he has held to two runs (one earned) with seven strikeouts in eight innings this season.

While he was able to lock down two outs in the ninth, a double, two singles, a walk, and a hit by pitch resulted in four runs crossing the plate. The outing inspires some confidence going forward, despite his previous two appearances coming out of the Astros' pen. As a result of the current six-man rotation, he'll next toe the rubber Saturday at the Angels, where he earned the victory on May 31 by tossing seven innings of two-run ball.

The Astros will presumably scratch Keuchel from Sunday's game, and they have yet to announce when he will start next.
Jul 27 2013Keuchel allowed six runs on 10 hits and one walk, with six strikeouts over 7.1 innings against the Blue Jays on Saturday, but picked up a win to improve to 5-5.The stat line certainly doesn't look good, but Keuchel had surrendered just three runs over the first seven innings before serving up a three-run shot to Jose Bautista in the eighth. Fortunately for the left-hander, the offense had built up a comfortable lead, and Jose Veras was able to close out the game to earn Keuchel his first win since June 16.
Jul 23 2013Keuchel gave up one run over six innings in Monday's 4-3 loss to the Athletics. The Houston bullpen blew a 3-1 lead, so Keuchel's record still stands at 4-5. Jul 13 2013Keuchel allowed three runs over 5.1 innings and did not factor in the decision Saturday against the Rays.He gave up six hits while walking none and striking out three. His record on the season remains at 4-5 to go along with a 4.62 ERA and 69 strikeouts.
Jul 6 2013Keuchel held the Rangers to two runs on six hits over five innings Saturday, but he did not factor into the decision. He took a shutout into the sixth inning of this one, but he could not record an out in the sixth, and then the bullpen squandered the Astros' lead. Holding the Rangers scoreless for five frames is not an unimpressive feat, especially when it occurs in Arlington. He has a 4.41 ERA in his 11 starts for the Astros, and he does not appear to be in any real danger of losing his spot in the rotation.
Jul 2 2013Keuchel (4-5) was hammered to the tune of five runs on eight hits over 4.2 innings Monday. He walked five and struck out four in the loss to Tampa Bay.Keuchel had his previous start skipped due to the Astros having two days off last week. The extra rest didn't help him Monday as the Rays proceeded to take batting practice off of him. Things don't get any easier for Keuchel in his next start as he will face the Rangers in Arlington on Saturday.
Jun 26 2013Keuchel's next turn in the rotation will be skipped, MLB.com reports. This much was apparent when the Astros brought Keuchel on for 2.2 innings of relief in Tuesday's loss to the Cardinals. With two off days this week, the Astros are able to streamline their rotation while keeping the other four starters on their normal rest. Keuchel will make his next start Monday against the Rays.
Jun 21 2013Keuchel (4-4) was handed the loss despite pitching six strong innings and striking out a career-high nine batters Friday afternoon against the Cubs. The long ball proved to be Keuchel's enemy, as all three of his runs came via solo home runs. His inability to keep the ball in the park, along with the Cubs' Matt Garza eight-inning domination of the Astros resulted in Keuchel's second loss over his last three decisions.
Jun 17 2013Keuchel captured his fourth consecutive quality start Sunday, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out four across 6.1 innings, as the Astros eked past the White Sox.During the aforementioned stretch, Keuchel has clamped down on the opposition, posting a 3-1 record, 2.13 ERA, 1.026 WHIP, and 17:4 K:BB ratio in 25.1 innings. Consequently, his ERA has dipped 1.30 runs from a season-high 5.53 on May 26 to its current 4.23. He'll strive for yet another successful outing Friday versus Chicago's other squad, the Cubs, who he held to one run in four innings during a September nod.
Jun 10 2013Keuchel struck out six batters and held the Mariners to two runs (one earned) over six innings Monday, but it wasn't enough to avoid taking his third loss of the season.Although Keuchel put together his third solid outing in a row, it's no surprise that his best wasn't enough to beat Seattle's Hisashi Iwakuma. The good news for Keuchel's fantasy owners is that he's pitching great right now and is scheduled to face the offensively inept White Sox on Sunday.
Jun 5 2013Keuchel picked up his third win of the season against the Orioles on Wednesday, tossing six innings of one-run ball while striking out three.Keuchel was on point Wednesday, throwing 65 of his 100 pitches for strikes and retiring 12 straight at one point. This was his second consecutive strong outing and both came against tough lineups (Angels and Orioles). Keuchel's ERA sits at 4.70 but he may be building some momentum here. He gets the light-hitting Mariners at Safeco next Monday.
Jun 1 2013Keuchel gave up two runs on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts over seven innings against the Angels on Friday.Keuchel had his best start since joining the rotation earlier this month, throwing 90 pitches (62 strikes) and inducing 14 ground ball outs. The 5.75 K/9 is a little weak and the outing only lowered his ERA to 5.10 on the season, so he is not a recommended starter outside of the occasional stream. He will look to build off this start next week against Baltimore.
May 20 2013Keuchel gave up four runs over 6.2 innings against the Royals on Monday, but managed to pick up his first win of the season despite the shaky performance.Keuchel has a 4.91 ERA and 12:8 K/BB ratio in three outings (18.1 innings) since joining the starting rotation. Those numbers aren't impressive in any way, but it should at least be mentioned that he faced the Tigers and Rangers in his other two starts. Keuchel's next outing is scheduled for Sunday against the Athletics.
May 11 2013Making his seventh appearance, but first start, of the season Keuchel gave up just two runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts against the Rangers on Friday. It's not like Keuchel was pitching so well that he earned the start as much as it was Philip Humber failing so miserably in the rotation. But Keuchel did a fairly nice job in this one, throwing 83 pitches (53 for strikes) and inducing 12 ground ball outs. He probably did enough to earn himself another start but unfortunately, that will come next week against the Tigers in Detroit so he is not recommended.
May 10 2013Keuchel will change his approach, attacking the strike zone more than in previous efforts when he makes his first start of the season Friday night against the Rangers, the Houston Chronicle reports.Keuchel was 3-8 with a 5.27 ERA over 16 starts in the majors last season, but began this season in the bullpen. When he got hit around last year, it was primarily because he was trying to be too fine with his pitching, nibbling at the corners. So far this season, Keuchel is 0-1 with a 4.96 ERA over 16.1 innings in six appearances.
May 8 2013Keuchel will start Friday against the Rangers, MLB.com reports. He'll be the new sacrificial lamb for an Astros rotation with Phil Humber being banished to the bullpen after going 0-for-4 with 16.20 ERA over his last four starts. With a 4.96 ERA and 1.83 WHIP of his own through six relief appearances, Keuchel should probably be avoided as a stream option if at all possible.
May 2 2013Keuchel was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Thursday.Keuchel will serve in a long relief role during his time with the Astros and could eventually find his way into the rotation. He posted a 5.27 ERA over 16 starts with the Astros in 2012, his rookie season.
May 1 2013The Astros are preparing to call up Keuchel from Triple-A Oklahoma City, according to the team's official site.Keuchel posted a 3.38 ERA in 10.2 innings spanning four relief appearances with Houston before being sent back down on April 21 when the Astros' bullpen was in need of a fresh arm. It's unknown what the corresponding roster moves will be, but the Astros have yet to announce who will start Thursday's game against the Tigers in Houston. That's the rotation spot formerly occupied by Brad Peacock, who struggled and was moved to the bullpen.
Apr 21 2013Keuchel was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday, MLB.com's Brian McTaggart reports. After he was demolished for seven runs on seven hits in Saturday's blowout loss to the Indians, Keuchel will head back to the minors to hone his effectiveness as a groundball pitcher. Brett Oberholtzer was called up in subsequent move and will fill the long relief void vacated by Keuchel.
Apr 6 2013Keuchel was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Saturday, MLB.com's Brian McTaggart reports.A move was required following the placement of Travis Blackley due to a strained right shoulder. After struggling in 16 major league starts last season -- a 5.27 ERA, 1.547 WHIP and 38:39 K:BB ratio in 85.1 innings -- Keuchel is unlikely to find much success slotting into Blackley's long-relief role.
Mar 17 2013Keuchel was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Saturday.Keuchel split time between Oklahoma City and Houston last season but really struggled at the major league level, turning in a 5.27 ERA and 1.54 WHIP over his 16 starts. After getting tagged for seven earned runs on 16 hits in seven innings of work this spring, Keuchel was removed from consideration for an Opening Day roster spot. He should be up with the Astros at some point due to another starter's injury or ineffectiveness.
Sep 29 2012Keuchel allowed seven runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out two while lasting just 2.1 innings in a 9-5 loss to the Brewers on Saturday night.Coming off perhaps his best outing of the season, he was rocked in this one. He blanked Milwaukee in the first inning, but was touched up for four in the second and three more in the third which lead to an early shower. He finishes 2012 with a 3-8 record and a brutal 5.27 ERA. The Astros will need to seek better alternatives for their move to the AL West in the 2013 season.
Sep 22 2012Keuchel held the Pirates to one run on four hits over seven innings Saturday to earn his third win of the season. The only blemish on this gem was a Gaby Sanchez solo home run in the top of the second inning. Otherwise, Keuchel did not allow an extra-base hit, and he only walked one over his efficient 90 pitches. The start was the longest by an Astro since Sept. 1, but he should only make one more start (against the Brewers next weekend) before the season's end.
Sep 15 2012Keuchel threw 5.1 scoreless innings against the Phillies on Saturday. The Phillies had a hard time finding runs against Keuchel on Saturday, but he had a hard time finding the strike zone. Only 50.5 percent of his 95 pitches went for strikes, which resulted in a lopsided 0:4 K:BB. The win was Keuchel's first in the MLB since June 23, but it is hard to be too excited about him moving forward.
Sep 14 2012Keuchel will have his next start moved up a day; he will now start on Saturday instead of Sunday, the Houston Chronicle reports.Bud Norris was scratched from his scheduled start Friday because of a blister that has plagued him much of the season. He will simply skip a start, rejoining the rotation next Thursday. With the six-man rotation, every pitcher will move up a spot.
Sep 10 2012Keuchel lasted just four innings Monday, allowing one run on six hits with two walks.Much like the pitcher who opposed him, Chris Volstad, Keuchel was lucky to face a weak lineup that wasn't able to capitalize on eight base runners over four innings. Keuchel has three straight starts of fewer than six innings and hasn't won a game since June 23. He's scheduled to face the Phillies in his next start.
Sep 4 2012After being recalled from the minors on Sept. 3, Keuchel will join the Astros rotation next week Monday, reports Zachary Levine of the Houston Chronicle.Keuchel will throw once prior to that start after throwing three innings on Monday. With the Astros going to a six man rotation, an innings limit will not be a large concern.
Sep 3 2012Keuchel was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday, the Houston Chronicle reports.Keuchel was sent to the minors on August 30 after posting a 1-7 record, 5.54 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, and 30:31 K:BB ratio in 12 starts (66.2 innings) with the Astros. While he could see a few spot starts the rest of the season, he will likely fill a long relief role.
Aug 29 2012Keuchel gave up five runs (four earned) over five innings in Wednesday's 6-4 loss to San Francisco.Keuchel's 1-7 record comes as no surprise since he plays for a lousy team and has walked more batters (31) than he's struck out (30) so far this season. At this point it's probably safe to label his fast start a fluke.
Aug 17 2012Keuchel allowed two runs on four hits, walking two and striking out three over 6.2 innings of a 3-1 loss to Arizona on Friday night. He's been better lately, and this was a quality start, but his 1-5 record and 4.99 ERA might be reasonably close to what should be expected. He'll get the Cardinals in St. Louis next time out, and despite his recent performance, he should probably still be considered a risky play.
Aug 7 2012Keuchel gave up four runs -- three earned -- on 12 hits over six innings against the Nats on Monday night. He's overmatched against big league hitters at this point, toting a 1.73 WHIP and 5.60 ERA over eight starts in Houston. Keuchel's days in the rotation could be numbered if the Astros are able to find a viable alternative in their system to take a closer look at in the near future.
Jul 31 2012Keuchel lasted just four innings Tuesday, giving up seven runs on seven hits and six walks to take the loss in Milwaukee.Keuchel's struggles continued Tuesday and he has now allowed 22 runs over his past 19 innings, while striking out just six hitters over that stretch.
Jul 26 2012Keuchel had a rough outing Thursday, surrendering five runs and five hits over six innings. To Keuchel's credit, he did settle down after allowing three homers over the first couple of innings. Keuchel had performed well in the first three starts of his career, but he's really struggled in his last three appearances, giving up 15 earned runs with just five strikeouts in 15 innings.
Jul 21 2012Keuchel allowed seven runs (six earned) on seven hits in just 3.1 innings against the Diamondbacks on Saturday to fall to 1-2 on the year.He was recalled prior to the game to take the recently-departed J.A. Happ's spot in the rotation, and the Diamondbacks gave him a rude welcoming. He allowed two home runs and four walks and needed 79 pitches to record 10 outs. That being said, he may continue to receive spins in a rebuilding rotation.
Jul 20 2012As expected, Keuchel will make the start Saturday for the Astros, the team's official Twitter reports.Keuchel was called up from Triple-A after J.A. Happ was shipped to Toronto on Friday. He'll slot in for Happ and face the Diamondbacks on Saturday. Keuchel went 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA in four starts with the big club in June.
Jun 28 2012Keuchel did not factor in Thursday's decision, but pitched effectively, allowing just one run and four hits over six innings.Keuchel isn't striking out many batters with just eight Ks in 20 innings, but he's given up just one run in each of his three starts. He'll continue to pitch in Houston's six-man rotation, at least until after the All-Star break.
Jun 27 2012The Astros will go with a six-man rotation until the All-Star Break, meaning Keuchel will remain in the rotation even through Bud Norris has come back from the disabled list, the Houston Chronicle reports. The six-man rotation will give Astros manager Brad Mills a little extra time to see who gets sent down for more seasoning. If Keuchel can repeat his early success, there's no reason to believe he can't stick in the rotation.
Jun 26 2012Astros manager Brad Mills will make a decision on Wednesday about Keuchel's spot in the rotation, according to the team's official site.In all likelihood, Keuchel will wind up back in the minors -- but it is not out of the realm of possibility that one of the Astros other starters (Lucas Harrell, Jordan Lyles or J.A. Happ) gets sent down instead.
Jun 17 2012Keuchel allowed just one run on four hits and four walks in five innings during his major league debut Sunday. He didn't factor in the decision though, as the Astros couldn't hold back the Rangers.Houston's bullpen, headed by Fernando Rodriguez, ensured that a tight, 1-1 game after five frames quickly got out of hand in a 9-3 defeat. Of greater import to Keuchel is the fact Bud Norris (knee/hip), for whom he was called up this weekend, was placed on the 15-day DL on Sunday. As a result, Keuchel should take on the open spot in the Astros' rotation over the next two weeks, especially after an encouraging, 91-pitch start.
Jun 16 2012Keuchel was recalled from Triple-A and will start for the Astros on Sunday, the Houston Chronicle's Zachary Levine reports.Keuchel will replace the injured Bud Norris (sprained knee). Keuchel has a 4.26 ERA and 1.26 WHIP with 46 strikeouts over 80.1 innings at Triple-A Oklahoma City this season. He probably won't stay up for long unless Norris or another one of Houston's starters head to the disabled list.
