Jan 12 2024Culberson signed a minor-league contract with Atlanta on Friday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The big news here is that Culberson has been signed as a reliever, as the 34-year-old will attempt to make a late-career switch to the mound. For what it's worth, Culberson has allowed one run over 7.1 innings covering eight mop-up appearances in his career. He'll report to minor-league camp to begin the conversion.
Aug 3 2023Culberson declined an outright assignment to Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday and elected to become a free agent, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson was designated for assignment by Atlanta on Monday, shortly after the NL East leaders acquired Nicky Lopez in a trade with the Royals. Culberson 34, has batted just .248/.294/.375 over his last 396 major-league plate appearances dating back to the beginning of the 2021 season.
Jul 31 2023Atlanta designated Culberson for assignment Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson became expendable after Atlanta required another utility player in Nicky Lopez in a trade with Kansas City on Sunday. Despite now having two separate one-month stints on Atlanta's 26-man active roster this season, Culberson has logged just one plate appearance while manager Brian Snitker has leaned heavily on his everyday players in the infield.
Jun 30 2023Atlanta selected Culberson's contract from Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's the second stint in the big leagues this season for Culberson, although he's yet to see any action. He'll operate in a utility role with Atlanta.
Jun 27 2023Culberson signed a minor-league contract with Atlanta on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After being DFA'd by Atlanta on June 18 and electing free agency, Culberson will return to Atlanta's farm system without a 40-man roster spot. Culberson was with the big-league club for roughly a month this season but never appeared in a game. He's slashing just .204/.234/.255 through 107 plate appearances with Triple-A Gwinnett and will have to drastically turn things around for another chance in the bigs.
Jun 25 2023Culberson cleared waivers and elected free agency Sunday, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson was designated for assignment by Atlanta last weekend, and he'll choose to become a free agent rather than accepting a minor-league assignment with the organization. Over 70 games with the Rangers last year, he hit .252 with two homers, 19 runs, 12 RBI and two steals.
Jun 18 2023Culberson was designated for assignment by Atlanta on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The big club selected Culberson's contract from Triple-A Gwinnett on May 19, but he never saw game action despite being around for nearly a month. The 34-year-old could return to the affiliate should he go unclaimed on waivers.
May 19 2023Atlanta selected Culberson's contract from Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He's taking the roster spot vacated by Braden Shewmake, who was optioned Thursday. It's a return home of sorts for Culberson, who played in Atlanta from 2018-20. He'll operate in a super utility role.
Mar 31 2023Culberson signed a minor-league contract with Atlanta on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson opted out of his minor-league deal with the Rays last week and is now headed back to Atlanta, where he played from 2018-20. The 33-year-old is a favorite of manager Brian Snitker, but if he winds up playing too much it's probably not a great sign for Atlanta.
Oct 5 2022Culberson went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's victory against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson launched a solo homer off Domingo German in the bottom of the third frame, evening the score up at 1-1. The long ball was his second of the year, both of which have come over his last four appearances with the Rangers. Culberson will wrap up the 2022 campaign having posted a .252 average with two homers, 12 RBI, 19 runs and two stolen bases over 115 at-bats in 70 games with Texas.
Aug 25 2022Culberson entered Wednesday's game as a pinch hitter and hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning of a 16-4 win over the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With the Rangers holding a large lead, interim manager Tony Beasley gave Culberson a plate appearance in the ninth, sending him up to pinch hit for Marcus Semien. This was Culberson's first plate appearance since Aug. 16. As the Rangers look to give developmental playing time to younger guys, like Ezequiel Duran, Culberson's opportunities could dry up over the final five weeks.
Jul 21 2022Culberson was scratched from the lineup for Thursday's game in Miami. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He had been scheduled to pick up a start in the middle infield while Corey Seager received a breather following his appearance in Los Angeles for the All-Star Game on Tuesday. Culberson's removal from the lineup isn't believed to be the result of any injury; instead, the Rangers are likely just eager to get a look at rookie Ezequiel Duran, who was called up from Triple-A Round Rock after Brad Miller (neck) was placed on the 10-day injured list. Duran will start at second bae and bat ninth while Marcus Semien mans shortstop.
Jun 5 2022Culberson started in left field and went 2-for-3 in Saturday's 3-2 win over Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Texas manager Chris Woodward usually finds a spot for Culberson, a career .217 hitter against righties, whenever an opponent throws a left-handed starter. Left field, like third base, is an unsettled position in the Rangers' lineup. Culberson is the third player to start there over the last three games. With Brad Miller (hip) on the injured list, Culberson joins the mix along with Andy Ibanez and Eli White, who started in center Saturday. Woodward uses the spot for matchups, depending on the handedness of the opposing starter. When all bodies are healthy, Miller is the likely starter against righties, while White gets the at-bats against lefties.
Jun 4 2022Culberson entered Friday's game in the top of the ninth inning after third baseman Josh Smith was removed with a shoulder injury. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson was then removed for pinch hitter Andy Ibanez in the bottom half of the ninth against right-hander Paul Sewald. Smith had started four of the last five games and was emerging as the primary option at the hot corner. If Smith misses time, Culberson will probably start against lefties while Ibanez slots in against righties.
May 19 2022Culberson will start at third base and bat ninth Thursday against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The righty-hitting Culberson will draw into the lineup against a lefty starting pitcher (Framber Valdez), and most of the 33-year-old's starting opportunities moving forward will come almost exclusively against southpaws. After delivering a massive .932 OPS in 144 plate appearances versus lefties in 2021, Culberson has dropped down to a .633 OPS in 32 plate appearances so far in 2022.
Apr 15 2022Culberson went 1-for-2 with a double and three RBI in Friday's 9-6 loss to the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson poked an RBI groundout in the second inning before knocking a two-run double in the fourth, both against starter Reid Detmers. The 33-year-old has now collected a hit in each of his three appearances this season. A hot bat could earn him more playing time, but Culberson is still serving in a utility role as of now.
Apr 11 2022Culberson started at third base and went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored in Sunday's 12-6 win over Toronto. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With the Rangers facing their first left-handed starter of the season, Culberson made his first start and appearance of the season. He slotted in at the hot corner while primary third sacker Andy Ibanez moved to first base. Culberson was later removed for pinch hitter Nathaniel Lowe against a right-hander in the fifth inning.
Apr 7 2022Culberson's contract was selected by the Rangers on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culbertson appeared in 91 games for the Rangers last year and slashed .243/.296/.381 with five homers, 23 runs, 22 RBI and seven stolen bases. The 32-year-old will serve as a utility option for Texas in 2022 and should see plenty of playing time against left-handed pitchers.
Apr 3 2022The Rangers informed Culberson on Sunday that he'll be included on the team's Opening Day roster, independent baseball journalist Jeff Wilson reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson likely clinched his spot as a utility option off the bench after the Rangers optioned Yonny Hernandez to Triple-A Round Rock and reassigned Matt Carpenter to the minors within the last few days. The 32-year-old Culberson is expected to have a regular spot in the lineup against left-handed pitchers after he supplied a .932 OPS in 144 plate appearances in those matchups in 2021.
Mar 30 2022Culberson is expected to claim a roster spot after the Rangers optioned Yonny Hernandez to Triple-A Round Rock on Wednesday, Jack Magruder of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Texas manager Chris Woodward said it wasn't a 100 percent lock that Culberson breaks camp, but he lauded the utility infielder. "We just think with Culby's experience, how he hits left-handed pitching, his versatility, the clubhouse guy, the makeup -- it is a really good fit for us," the manager said. Culberson hit .346 with four homers and a .932 OPS in 144 plate appearances against left-handers with the Rangers last season while playing mostly third base.
Mar 16 2022Culberson signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Wednesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson joined the Rangers for the 2021 campaign and hit .243 with five homers, 23 runs, 22 RBI and seven stolen bases across 91 major-league appearances. He'll presumably compete for a major-league roster spot during spring training this year and should be in the mix for playing time at third base after the Rangers traded Isiah Kiner-Falefa on Saturday.
Sep 21 2021Culberson went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Monday's 4-3 loss to the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson launched his fifth homer during the Rangers' three-run fifth inning. He started for just the second time in the last nine games, which befits a 32-year-old infielder playing for a team that's closing in on 100 losses. He's been sharing third base with Brock Holt, Yonny Hernandez and Andy Ibanez while the organization focuses on playing time for younger players.
Sep 1 2021Culberson (illness) was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list and is starting Wednesday's game against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson spent a week and a half on the COVID-19 IL and experienced some symptoms of the virus. However, he rejoined the team Sunday and participated in activities for several days prior to his activation. The 32-year-old will start at the hot corner and bat seventh Wednesday, and he should see his fair share of playing time while Brock Holt (illness) and Andy Ibanez (hamstring) remain sidelined.
Aug 29 2021Culberson (illness) completed his quarantine for COVID-19 health and safety protocols and joined the Rangers for pregame workouts Sunday, Chris Halicke of SI.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Aug. 20, but after having previously been vaccinated against the virus, he appears to have emerged from quarantine in relatively good fitness. He'll be eligible to return from the IL on Monday, and he could step back into a key role in the Texas infield with Brock Holt (illness) still on the COVID-19 IL and with Andy Ibanez (hamstring) likely to be deactivated.
Aug 23 2021Culberson (illness) has reported improvement with his condition since being placed on the COVID-19 injured list Friday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson is one of four Rangers players to land on the COVID-19 IL within the past four days, but the team isn't disclosing which of those individuals tested positive for the virus. Though Culberson has acknowledged being vaccinated, the fact that he has experienced some degree of virus symptoms means he'll likely miss at least a week of action before rejoining the Rangers. While both Culberson and Brock Holt are on the COVID-19 IL, Nick Solak is expected to serve as the Rangers' top utility infielder.
Aug 20 2021Culberson was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Per source, Culberson has yet to test positive for the virus but is experiencing COVID-like symptoms. If he never winds up testing positive, he could be back within a few days, but he'll be forced to miss a longer period if it turns out he does indeed have coronavirus. Nick Solak was called up to take his place on the roster.
Aug 18 2021Culberson went 1-for-2 with a stolen base in Tuesday's 3-1 loss to the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson singled and stole second off Tyler Anderson in the second inning. It was his seventh steal of the season. He rides a current seven-game hitting streak, which is his second-longest streak of the year. The 32-year-old is slashing .249/.304/.383 with four home runs, 18 RBI and 20 runs scored in 231 plate appearances. He continues to see the majority of his plate appearances against lefties.
Aug 12 2021Culberson went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Thursday's 3-1 loss to the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson hit a second-inning bomb off Marco Gonzales to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. He was the only player to account for a run, after Gonzales pitched a two-hit complete game against them. The 32-year-old only starts against lefty's, and is batting just .184 in his last 14 games. On the season, he is slashing .235/.287/.370 with four long balls, 18 RBI, 18 runs and five steals in 220 plate appearances.
Jul 28 2021Culberson will start at third base and bat eighth Wednesday against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson and Brock Holt continue to form a platoon at third base, with the former getting the smaller share of starts as the right-handed bat of the two. With southpaw Madison Bumgarner on the hill for Arizona, Culberson will unsurprisingly join the lineup while Holt rests. Culberson is slashing an impressive .346/.398/.580 in 90 plate appearances versus left-handers this season.
Jul 4 2021Culberson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base in Saturday's 7-3 win over Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson started at third base against a left-hander, the Rangers' typical practice, and he extended a modest hitting streak to five games with a third-inning single. The 32-year-old journeyman has multiple hits in three of those five games, going 8-for-19 with three doubles, four RBI and five runs scored. Culberson remains in the mix at third base with Brock Holt and Andy Ibanez.
Jun 26 2021Culberson went 1-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in Friday's 9-4 win over the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson was involved both at the plate and in the field. Prior to his two-run double in the seventh inning, Culberson made a nice bare-handed play on Whit Merrifield's slow chopper in the first inning, then snared a 101.5 mph grounder to initiate a double play to end that frame. He, Brock Holt and more recently Andy Ibanez are holding down third base until prospect Josh Jung is ready for the majors. Jung's season was delayed due to a foot injury, but he's currently playing for Double-A Frisco. The injury may preclude Jung from reaching the majors in 2021, so Culberson could remain part of the mix for the rest of the season.
Jun 13 2021Culberson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson will now sit for the second time in as many days following a stretch of eight consecutive starts. The 32-year-old journeyman will likely fill the short side of a platoon at third base with the lefty-hitting Brock Holt moving forward.
Jun 6 2021Culberson will start at second base and bat seventh Sunday against the Rays, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson was initially scheduled to get Sunday off, but he was a late addition to the lineup after Khris Davis (illness) was scratched. Though he doesn't have a clear path to everyday playing time at any position, Culberson's multi-position versatility will allow him to pick up his fifth consecutive start. He also drew two starts at third base, one at second base and one at first base over the previous four contests.
May 23 2021Culberson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson has served as the Rangers' primary third baseman for most of May, but he'll move into a short-side platoon role after Brock Holt was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Friday. After a solid start to the season, Culberson's production at the plate has tailed off of late. The 32-year-old has fallen into a 1-for-23 slump at the dish in his past eight games.
May 15 2021Culberson is out of the lineup Saturday against the Astros, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The infielder will start on the bench for a second consecutive game after having gone 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in both of his last two games. Culberson has hit just .182 in his last seven games.
May 14 2021Culberson is out of the lineup Friday against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson started at third base the past four games but will take a seat Friday after going 3-for-15. Andy Ibanez will work at the hot corner for the Rangers in his place.
May 9 2021Culberson went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, two RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's 10-2 win over the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson kicked things off during a six-run fifth inning by taking a first-pitch slider over the wall in left to tie the game up at two. The long ball was his first since April 15 as he's now slashing .310/.347/.521 with 11 RBI and eight runs scored. He'll look to continue to take advantage of his at-bats while Brock Holt (hamstring) is sidelined.
May 8 2021Culberson isn't starting Saturday's game against the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson had started each of the last five games and went 5-for-20 with a double, two RBI, a run and four strikeouts during that time. Andy Ibanez will take over at third base and bat eighth.
May 5 2021Culberson went 1-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's 6-3 extra-inning win over the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson reached base on a fielding error in the ninth inning and scored the game tying run that forced the extra frame. He then doubled in Texas' final run in a three-run 10th and extended his hit streak to eight games. Culberson should see ample at-bats at third base after the Rangers added Brock Holt (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list.
May 4 2021Culberson went 1-for-4 with an RBI in Monday's 6-5 loss to the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson's seventh-inning single extended his hitting streak to seven games, and he later pushed a run home with an eighth-inning groundout. The utility infielder is getting most of his playing time at third base, where he and Brock Holt are alternating starts. Culberson has a career-high .869 OPS with seven extra-base hits, eight RBI and one steal over 18 games.
Apr 16 2021Culberson went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in the 6-4 win against the Rays on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson's fourth inning home run off Rich Hill gave the Rangers a 3-1 lead and was his second home run in three days. The 32-year-old went 2-for-12 with no RBI or runs over his five games. He turned the page, going 6-for-11 with two home runs, five RBI and two runs over his last three games. Culberson has been a streaky player throughout his career and has only played more than 100 games in two seasons. His only recorded double-digit home run season (12) was in 2018 with Atlanta.
Apr 13 2021Culberson went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run, an RBI double and a stolen base during Tuesday's win over the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson played a major role in lifting the Rangers to victory, highlighted by a two-run long ball against Trevor Richards in the eighth inning. He also hit an RBI double in the fourth, then singled and swiped a bag in the sixth. Both the homer and stolen base were firsts of the season for the 32-year-old.
Apr 8 2021Culberson started at third base and went 2-for-3 with a double in Wednesday's 2-1 win over the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson has been sharing the hot corner, but he could be in line to see the bulk of the at-bats while Brock Holt (hamstring) is injured. Manager Chris Woodward told Sam Blum of the Dallas Morning News that Holt could land on the injured list.
Apr 3 2021Culberson started at third base Saturday and went 0-for-4 out of the nine-hole in an 11-4 loss to Kansas City. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: When the Rangers didn't add Rougned Odor to their roster, a gaping hole was created at third base. Brock Holt started there Thursday against right-hander Brad Keller, and Culberson followed at the hot corner in the second game against left-hander Mike Minor.
Mar 30 2021Culberson has earned a spot on the Rangers' roster, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As a repercussion of Texas moving on from Rougned Odor, the non-rostered Culberson will claim a spot in the infield. He started at third base in Monday's game against the Brewers and is expected to share the hot corner with Brock Holt -- an unlikely duo when spring training opened. Culberson, who has slashed .292/.452/.375 over 13 spring contests, could be in the lineup against left-handers while Holt mans the position against righties.
Mar 2 2021Culberson went 2-for-2 with a run scored in Monday's spring game against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson got the start at third base and is very much in the mix for that position, which is wide open. Brock Holt started at third in Sunday's Cactus League opener, and Rougned Odor is expected to get reps there this spring as well. Although Culberson is on a minor-league deal and faces an uphill battle, manager Chris Woodward told Kennedi Landry of MLB.com that the infielder worked hard on his swing during the offseason, and it showed Monday.
Dec 28 2020Culberson signed with the Rangers as a non-roster invitee Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson spent most of last season at the Braves' alternate training site, coming to the plate just seven times. The veteran utility man has started everywhere except catcher and center field during his eight-year career, but that defensive versatility is the most significant thing he offers a team. Culberson has a .247/.292/.390 career slash line, but he could still win a bench spot, given the lack of quality depth on this roster.
Oct 30 2020Culberson elected free agency Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson has been a useful bench piece for the past several years, though he played a very minimal role this past season, getting into just 10 games and coming to the plate just seven times. With a career .247/.292/.390 slash line, the 31-year-old's main appeal on the open market will be his ability to play almost anywhere on the diamond.
Sep 30 2020The Braves selected Culberson's contract from their alternate training site Wednesday ahead of Game 1 of their wild-card series with the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Atlanta opened up a spot for Culberson on the 40-man roster by releasing Tommy Milone (elbow) and a spot on the active roster by demoting Adeiny Hechavarria. Culberson, who logged seven plate appearances with the Braves during the regular season, is expected to serve as a utility man in the playoffs.
Sep 8 2020The Braves designated Culberson for assignment Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Despite being on the Braves' active roster all season, Culberson has hardly seen any use, even when Atlanta has been without regular players due to injury. The veteran has seen action in 10 of the Braves' 41 games to date, and his appearance as a pinch runner in Monday's 5-4 loss to the Marlins was his first since Aug. 22. Atlanta removed him from its 40-man roster and 28-man active roster to make room for reliever Jacob Webb (shoulder), who was reinstated from the 45-day injured list in a corresponding move.
Aug 23 2020Culberson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Culberson has been on the active roster since Opening Day, he's started in only one of the Braves' 28 games to date while logging all of eight plate appearances. Unless the Braves lose another infielder to the injured list, Culberson's playing-time outlook is unlikely to improve at any point.
Jul 21 2020Culberson's contract was selected by the Braves on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After an underwhelming stat line in 2019, Culberson lost his spot on the 40-man roster during the offseason. However, he impressed enough in camp to return to the major-league roster to begin the regular season. The 31-year-old should play a depth role for the Braves this year; his versatility in the field could allow him to carve out some playing time as the season progresses.
Jun 29 2020Culberson will be a part of the Braves' 60-man roster, Gabe Burns of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson lost his spot on the Braves' 40-man roster during the offseason after hitting .259/.294/.437 with five home runs and 20 RBI over 144 plate appearances in 2019. The 31-year-old was able to take part in major-league spring training this year, where he went 3-for-26 with four RBI and eight strikeouts before play was suspended. Given his downturn in production recently, he's no lock to receive playing time in the majors once the regular season begins.
May 16 2020Culberson, Ronald Acuna and Ozzie Albies were able to take at-bats against live pitching this week, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The trio of hitters joined Mike Foltynewicz, Mike Soroka and Sean Newcomb at a high school in the Atlanta area for some more intense reps than the players had been getting in their respective batting cages and bullpen sessions, as each pitcher tossed three simulated innings of about 15 pitches against his teammates. Culberson may have been on the outside looking in at a roster spot when spring training was suspended, but the likelihood of expanded rosters to accommodate a compacted schedule could ensure the 31-year-old finds a home once again on the Atlanta bench, even if only in a pinch-hitting role.
Mar 29 2020Culberson posted a .115/.258/.192 slash line with eight strikeouts in 26 at-bats before spring training was suspended. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Dropped from the 40-man roster in the offseason, Culberson came into camp hoping to win a spot on the Atlanta bench, but his poor performance at the plate did him no favors. The 30-year-old utility man could still make the cut if the team sticks with its initial plan to send the loser of the third-base battle between Austin Riley and Johan Camargo to Triple-A, but if both younger players stay in the majors, Culberson seems well behind Adam Duvall in the race for the final spot on the bench.
Feb 18 2020Culberson is fully recovered from the facial fractures he suffered last September and is looking to reclaim a spot on the Atlanta bench, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He's been taking batting practice for more than a month while wearing a special batting helmet that offers additional protection after he was struck in the face by a Fernando Rodney pitch on a bunt attempt. Culberson became a fan favorite in Atlanta in 2018 with some timely pinch-hit homers, but his numbers declined last year and he was dropped from the 40-man roster this offseason. Even if the 30-year-old has a good camp, he's not guaranteed a spot on the big-league roster for a Braves team that has plenty of depth already.
Dec 13 2019Culberson (face) signed a minor-league contract with the Braves on Friday, which includes an invitation to spring training, Kevin McAlpin of 680 The Fan Atlanta reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson became a free agent at the beginning of December after being non-tendered by Atlanta, but he'll return to the Braves on a minor-league deal for the 2020 campaign. The outfielder played in 108 games with the big-league team a season ago, hitting .259/.294/.437 with five homers and 20 RBI, and he'll get a chance to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster this spring.
Dec 2 2019Culberson (face) will be non-tendered by the Braves on Monday, Robert Murray of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson hit .256/.294/.437 (85 wRC+) in 144 plate appearances last season, and the Braves evidently weren't interested in giving even a modest arbitration raise to a clear bench player. He will head to free agency looking for a big-league fit heading into his age-31 season.
Sep 17 2019Culberson (face) was placed on the 60-day injured list Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson had already been ruled out for the season with a fractured cheekbone after getting hit in the face by a pitch Saturday. The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the Braves to select John Ryan Murphy's contract.
Sep 15 2019Culberson won't require surgery to address his multiple facial fractures but is out for the season, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson suffered the facial fractures -- including a fractured cheekbone -- Saturday when he was hit in the face by a pitch and carted off the field. The utility man will finish the season with a .259/.294/.437 slash line and five home runs in 144 plate appearances.
Sep 14 2019Culberson left Saturday's game against the Nationals after getting hit in the face while trying to bunt, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Culberson appeared to be struck directly in the nose by a pitch and went down immediately. He left the game on a cart. The exact nature and severity of the injury is not yet clear.
Sep 9 2019Culberson supplied a pinch-hit solo home run in his lone plate appearance in Sunday's 9-4 loss to the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The ninth-inning blast ended an 0-for-26 skid for Culberson, who saw his season-long average drop by more than 60 points during the offensive dry spell. Culberson hasn't drawn any starts since Aug. 25 and will likely continue to see spotty at-bats in his bench role for the rest of the season.

Jul 23 2018Culberson went 4-for-6 with two doubles, three RBI and a run scored in Monday's 12-1 victory over the Marlins.Culberson tacked on insurance runs in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings, as the Braves cruised to a massive win. The 29-year-old shortstop has been hot coming out of the All-Star break, going 9-for-15 with a home run and four RBI over three games. He's batting .289 with 25 RBI and an .807 OPS through 68 games this season.
Jul 23 2018Culberson got the start at second base and hit second in Sunday's loss to the Nationals, going 3-for-5.He was caught stealing, but otherwise it was another surprisingly strong performance from the 29-year-old utility player, who now boasts a career-best .778 OPS on the years -- better than he managed in 142 games over two seasons with the Rockies. With Ozzie Albies battling a hamstring injury, Culberson could be in line for more work at the keystone this week, making him a potentially useful DFS option.
Jul 1 2018Culberson went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in Sunday's 6-5 win over the Cardinals. The 29-year-old infielder raised his batting average to .277 in 141 at-bats this season. Culberson also has 14 extra-base hits and 26 runs scored. He's hit well enough this year to earn the most playing time he's seen since getting 210 at-bats in 2014, and he should surpass that before long.
Jul 1 2018Culberson will start at third base and bat seventh Sunday against the Cardinals.Culberson served as the Braves' primary left fielder for most of June while Ronald Acuna was out with a knee injury, but the latter's return to the lineup Friday will likely confine Culberson to a utility role moving forward. The 29-year-old had been on the bench for the first two games of the series, but gets the nod at the hot corner Sunday with everyday third baseman Johan Camargo receiving a breather.
Jun 25 2018Culberson is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Reds.Culberson has played regularly during June, but he will be held out for the second time in three days Monday as manager Brian Snitker decided to include switch-hitters Danny Santana and Johan Camargo in the lineup against righty Tyler Mahle, as opposed to the righty-swinging Culberson.
Jun 23 2018Culberson is not in the lineup against the Orioles on Saturday. He has started the past six games, going 7-for-22 (.318 average) with two home runs and four RBI during that time. Danny Santana will pick up a start in left field in his place.
Jun 17 2018Culberson will hit second and start in left field Sunday against the Padres. It's the highest Culberson has hit in the order all season, with the move up the lineup made possible by Ozzie Albies receiving the day off. While Culberson will presumably slot in the bottom half of the lineup when Albies re-enters the starting nine Tuesday in Toronto, the former may at least make for a more appealing DFS option than usual Sunday while batting directly in front of Freddie Freeman.
Jun 16 2018Culberson supplied all the offense in Saturday's 1-0 win over the Padres, going 2-for-3 with a solo home run.His fifth-inning shot off Jordan Lyles held up thanks to the strong work of Sean Newcomb and the Braves' bullpen. Culberson now has a decent .269/.319/.426 slash line with three homers, 13 RBI and 20 runs in 45 games, but with Ronald Acuna (knee) inching closer to a return, Culberson's window for regular playing time could soon be drawing to a close.
Jun 14 2018Culberson is out of the lineup against San Diego on Thursday.Culberson will get the day off following eight straight starts, during which he went 9-for-30 (.300 average) with two extra-base hits and five RBI. In his place, Preston Tucker will start in left field and bat eighth.
Jun 10 2018Culberson went 3-for-4 with an RBI on Saturday against the Dodgers.Culberson drew the start in left field with a left-handed pitcher on the mound, and he took advantage by posting his first three hit performance of the season. He has seen a bump in playing time with Ronald Acuna sidelined, and he has performed respectably, especially of late. Across his last five starts, Culberson has managed three multi-hit games to go along five RBI and three runs scored.
Jun 3 2018Culberson went 1-for-1 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 4-2 win over Washington.Culberson entered the game as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the ninth, and he didn't disappoint, as he ended the game with a home run. Despite limited at-bats this season, he's collected a base knock in seven of his last eight games. Culberson is hitting .239 with two homers and seven RBI in 71 at-bats.
May 4 2018Culberson went 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI in Thursday's 11-0 rout of the Mets.Making a rare start at third base, the utility man got in on the action as Atlanta swept its division rival. Culberson is only hitting .156/.250/.188 on the season through 36 plate appearances, however, and he's the most likely candidate to lose his roster spot when the Braves decide Jose Bautista is ready to take over at the hot corner.
Mar 20 2018Culberson is projected to win a spot on the Braves' Opening Day roster, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.Though he spend much of the 2017 campaign at Triple-A Oklahoma City, Culberson joined the Dodgers as a September callup and emerged as a key contributor for the Dodgers in their run to the World Series. After being traded to the Braves in December, Culberson faces less competition for a bench role and looks to have locked up a utility gig. He'll serve as a backup at three infield spots and also has prior experience in left field.
Dec 16 2017Culberson was traded to the Braves along with Scott Kazmir (hip), Adrian Gonzalez (back), Brandon McCarthy and cash in exchange for Matt Kemp on Saturday, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.Culberson played in just 15 regular season games last season, though he garnered 10 playoff appearances due to an injury to Corey Seager and hit an impressive .500/.471/.938 in the process. He's appeared in just 49 major-league games over the past three seasons, hitting .275/.301/.363 over that stretch, but he should be in line for some more opportunities next season as a utility man for the Braves.
Oct 17 2017Culberson is not in the lineup for Game 3 of the NLCS against the Cubs on Tuesday, Eric Stephen of TrueBlueLA.com reports.Culberson started the first two games of the NLCS -- both against left-handed pitchers -- in place of the injured Corey Seager (back), but he'll head to the bench for Game 3 with righty Kyle Hendricks toeing the rubber for the Cubs. Chris Taylor will start at shortstop in his place, opening up a spot for Joc Pederson to start in center field. Culberson is 2-for-5 (.400) with an RBI and two runs scored so far in the NLCS.
Oct 14 2017Culberson will draw the start at shortstop for Game 1 of the NLCS against the Cubs, Andy McCullough of the Los Angeles Times reports. With Corey Seager (back) absent from the Dodgers' NLCS roster, it'll be on Culberson to fill the void for at least Game 1. Culberson played just 15 big league games this season, slashing .154/.267/.498 in just 13 at-bats. He'll face Jose Quintana on Saturday.
Sep 4 2017Culberson had his contract purchased from Triple-A Oklahoma City and is starting at shortstop Monday against the Diamondbacks.Culberson will join the Dodgers for the first time all season after compiling a .250/.299/.336 line in 108 games with Oklahoma City. He's expected to serve as infield depth for the big club, and he'll likely see some starts at shortstop while Corey Seager (elbow) remains sidelined. The 28-year-old spent some time in the majors last season, slashing .299/.309/.388 in 67 at-bats. Brandon McCarthy (finger) was shifted to the 60-day DL in a corresponding roster move.
Mar 29 2017Culberson (personal) was reassigned to minor league camp Wednesday, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports. The 27-year-old was in the hunt for a reserve role on the major league roster, although his .250 batting average this spring did little to persuade the Dodgers to deploy him in Los Angeles. His versatility should help him get a call back to the majors relatively soon, but for now Culberson will have to bide his time with Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Mar 27 2017Culberson will be away from camp for a few days while his wife gives birth, Eric Stephen of SB Nation reports.Culberson is vying for a utility role with the Dodgers, though he is considered to be the underdog. He is 12-for-48 (.250) with three RBI so far this spring. He should be back shortly after his wife gives birth.
Feb 21 2017Dodgers' general manager Farhan Zaidi said that Culberson will compete for an infield utility role this spring, MLB.com's Ken Gurnick reports.Culberson was outrighted to Triple-A Oklahoma City this past offseason after slashing .299/.309/.388 in 68 major league plate appearances. He will compete with Enrique Hernandez and Chris Taylor for the utility role because all three have experience at short. With Culberson no longer on the 40-man roster, he has to be considered the underdog in the race because the Dodgers would have to make a corresponding move to place him back.
Aug 23 2016Culberson was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City and is in the lineup Tuesday against the Giants, Andy McCullough of the Los Angeles Times reports. With lefty Madison Bumgarner due up for San Francisco, Culberson will step in right away for his ninth start with the big club this season, pushing Chase Utley to the bench. Culberson's second stint with the big club may only last days -- the team may need to add a starter for Thursday with Brett Anderson (blister) unlikely to be cleared -- but Culberson should settle in with the Dodgers for good once rosters expand.
Jul 20 2016Culberson has been promoted by the Dodgers and will start at shortstop on Wednesday, David Vassegh of Dodger Talk reports.Culberson is hitting .289/.333/.406 in 180 at-bats with Triple-A Oklahoma City. He will start at shortstop as Corey Seager recovers from an illness. He is expected to be sent back back down to Triple-A when Seager is ready to return to the Dodgers lineup.
May 18 2016Culberson was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday.Culberson hasn't been horrible off the Dodgers' bench, going 7-for-27 in very limited playing time, but he'll head down to the minors in order to make room on the roster for Mike Bolsinger, who was activated from the disabled list Wednesday. Culberson will continue to develop in the minors, but he could be back soon if an injury strikes one of the Dodgers' regulars.
May 3 2016Culberson is in the lineup and batting ninth for Tuesday's game against the Rays.Culverson will get a rare start in order to give Corey Seager the day off. The 27-year-old hasn't started a game since April 25 and has tallied just five hits on the season.
Jun 1 2015Culberson (back) reported to Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday to begin his rehab assignment, MLB.com's Thomas Harding reports.Culberson has been on the shelf since early April with a lumbar disc sprain, but now appears to be recovered from the issue. He went 2-for-3 with a stolen base in his season debut with Albuquerque on Sunday, but it doesn't seem likely that he'll be in line for a role with the Rockies in the near future, even after he's formally activated from the DL.
Apr 30 2015Culberson (back) resumed baseball activities Wednesday at the Rockies' spring training facility, The Denver Post reports.Culberson's bulging disc cost him a shot at winning an Opening Day roster spot for the Rockies, but Rafael Ynoa was always perceived to have a leg up in the battle for the utility-infield job in any event. Now feeling better after missing the last month of action, Culberson will effectively go through the spring training process once more, as he said that he didn't expect to be playing until two or three weeks from now in a best-case scenario. Once he's activated from the 60-day DL, expect the Rockies to keep him at Triple-A Albuquerque.
Apr 12 2015Culberson (back) was transferred to the 60-day DL on Sunday, the Denver Post reports.Culberson has been dealing with a back injury for quite some time, and will likely begin his return to the big leagues with a few rehab starts at the Triple-A level. The move was procedural at this point, clearing up space for Scott Oberg to join the 40-man roster.
Apr 5 2015Culberson was placed on the 15-day disabled list SundayCulberson was suffering from a back injury earlier in camp, and hasn't recovered to the point of a return. While he could return as early as April 12, he was optioned to minor league camp earlier in spring training, so he'll likely begin his season at Triple-A.
Mar 31 2015Culberson was optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs on Tuesday, The Denver Post reports.Culberson lost a good chunk of his spring to a lower-back injury, while Daniel Descalso is a lock to make the Opening Day roster. With Culberson officially headed to Triple-A Colorado Springs, Rafael Ynoa has a shot to join Descalso on the roster.
Mar 28 2015Culberson (back) is in the lineup for Saturday's Cactus League game against the Cubs, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. With Culberson's back presenting no issues in a minor league game Wednesday, the training staff has cleared him to play in his first A-squad exhibition since March 8. Culberson was off to a nice start before succumbing to the injury, going 4-for-11 in his first five spring games, but the missed time has closed the gap for Rafael Ynoa to possibly take the other utility infield role alongside Daniel Descalso.
Mar 25 2015Culberson (back) will play four innings defensively with an at-bat in each inning in a minor league game Wednesday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.Culberson's return to a minor league game bodes well, as he should return to the major league club soon as well. The question now will turn to whether or not he's able to nab a roster spot out of spring training. He's competing with both Daniel Descalso and Rafael Ynoa for that distinction, but Descalso is likely the favorite, with Ynoa likely also ahead of him in the race.
Mar 15 2015Culberson is dealing with a lower back injury and won't play over the next few days, The Denver Post reports. The Rockies don't want to further aggravate Culberson's injury so they'll make sure he's definitely in the clear before putting him back in the lineup. His status should be updated in due time after he gets a couple days of rest.
Mar 15 2015Culberson is dealing with a lower back injury and won't play over the next few days, theDenver Post reports. The Rockies don't want to further aggravate Culberson's injury, so they'll make sure he's definitely in the clear before putting him back in the lineup. His status should be updated in due time after he gets a couple days of rest.
Sep 20 2014Culberson stands to see an increase in playing time at third base over the final week of the season with Nolan Arenado (chest/illness) not expected to return.Culberson has split starts at the position with Rafael Ynoa over the last four games, a trend that could continue the rest of the way. While the Rockies will be on the road during the upcoming week in the unfavorable hitting environments of San Diego and Los Angeles, Culberson could have some value in daily formats if he's in the lineup for either of the remaining two home contests this weekend against the Diamondbacks.
Aug 18 2014Culberson started both games of Sunday's doubleheader with the Reds, going a collective 3-for-7 with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI.Culberson saw both of the starts at second base, after D.J. LeMahieu was unavailable with an ankle injury. It's not known just yet how much time LeMahieu will miss as a result of the injury, but Culberson could stand to see everyday action if it lingers into Tuesday's series opener with the Royals. Even if LeMahieu makes a quick return, there's a good chance Culberson could still see another extended look in the lineup at shortstop, as Josh Rutledge has hit the skids offensively in the last couple weeks to loosen his hold on the job.
Jul 30 2014Culberson made his second consecutive start at shortstop Tuesday, going 1-for-7 with a double and three strikeouts in the 16-inning loss to the Cubs.Manager Walt Weiss appears content to roll with Culberson as his regular shortstop until Josh Rutledge is able to get over his bout with an upper respiratory infection. While Culberson has shown the ability to produce quality hitting numbers in the minors, his spotty playing time has hurt his approach at the plate this season. He's batting just .177 with a .221 on-base percentage over 151 plate appearances.
Jun 24 2014Culberson is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Cardinals, the Denver Post reports.Culberson, who's started each of the past two games at third base, will give way to Ryan Wheeler on Tuesday, as the Rockies face right-hander Shelby Miller.
Jun 23 2014Culberson got the start at third base Sunday, going 2-for-5 at the dish with his first stolen base of the season. The start was Culberson's first in four games, as the Rockies appear to have settled on DJ LeMahieu and Josh Rutledge as their top options at the position while Nolan Arenado (finger) remains on the disabled list. Though Culberson had a nice day at the plate Sunday, he did commit a throwing error in the field, which won't help his chances of gathering further starts at third base.
Jun 13 2014Culberson went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in Thursday's win over the Braves.Culberson looked to be on the outs as the Rockies' regular third baseman in place of the injured Nolan Arenado (finger), but he's come around offensively of late, producing two-hit games in two of his last four starts. For the time being, both Culberson and Josh Rutledge at least see semi-regular starts in the infield.
Jun 8 2014Culberson is out of the lineup Sunday against the Dodgers.Culberson has started 10 of 13 games for the Rockies since Nolan Arenado hit the DL, but will give way to DJ LeMahieu at the hot corner Sunday afternoon. With a .198 batting average on the season, Culberson isn't giving manager Walt Weiss much reason to continue to hand him consistent playing time.
Jun 7 2014Culberson is not in the lineup Saturday against the Dodgers.Culberson will yield third-base duties to Ryan Wheeler after making four consecutive starts. While Culberson is still batting just .203/.232/.329 for the season, he has shown some signs of life lately, with four hits (three extra-base hits) in his last 14 at-bats.
Jun 6 2014Culberson went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple in Friday's loss to the Dodgers.Culberson has been one of the names called upon to fill the role of Nolan Arenado, as he's started nine of the Rockies' past 11 games since Arenado hit the DL with a finger injury. Although he's just hitting .203 with only one home run, Culberson should hold short-term value in NL-only formats, as Arenado is expected to be out until at least the All-Star break.
May 31 2014Culberson is not in the lineup Saturday against the Indians.Manager Walt Weiss gave Culberson a fair audition at third base in place of Nolan Arenado (finger), with seven straight starts prior to Saturday. The 25-year-old Culberson went just 4-for-22 over that span, however, and Weiss has decided to try Michael Cuddyer at the hot corner and leave Culberson on the bench even with the DH option available to him in Cleveland.
May 28 2014Culberson made his fifth straight start at third base Tuesday, going 0-for-3 with a strikeout in the 6-2 win over the Phillies. While it was initially thought that DJ LeMahieu would move over from second base to third base in the wake of Nolan Arenado's placement on the DL, it appears manager Walt Weiss has settled on Culberson for regular action at the hot corner. The 25-year-old hasn't really seen a sustained starting opportunity at the big league level, but he's shown the ability to hit for a high average and provide some moderate pop and speed in the minors the past two seasons. Though he's batting just .200 over 60 at-bats with the Rockies so far in 2014, the fact that he has a place in a highly-potent lineup gives him some decent value in NL-only or deeper formats.
May 24 2014Culberson will start at third base and bat seventh Saturday against the Braves, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.Culberson will get the first crack at replacing Nolan Arenado (finger) at third base, with DJ LeMahieu remaining at second for Saturday's contest. It will be Culberson's first career start at the hot corner, and while he could remain there, LeMahieu has more experience at third and could slide over and allow Culberson and Josh Rutledge to share time at the keystone.
May 4 2014Culberson was the hero of Saturday's 11-10 win over the Mets, smacking a walk-off two-run homer in the ninth inning to give the Rockies the victory.Culberson's first homer of the season was quite a memorable one in a thrilling game that saw the Rockies claw their way back from a 6-0 deficit, only to squander the lead in the late innings. It's been a productive series thus far for Culberson, who received a start in the opener Thursday, going 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
Apr 21 2014Culberson was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs prior to Monday's game, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.Culberson will assume the roster spot of Michael Cuddyer (hamstring), who was presumably placed on the DL in a corresponding move. Culberson isn't in the starting lineup Monday, but will be available for reserve outfield duty, and possibly even infield work, if needed. Culberson is just 2-for-18 in his first nine major league appearances of 2014.
Apr 13 2014Culberson was optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs on Sunday, Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports.Culberson has gone just 2-for-18 at the plate through nine games this season, and was deemed expendable to make room on the roster for Tyler Chatwood, who will get the start on Sunday. Culberson will continue to work on his craft in the minors, and the utilityman could see his name called again if a roster spot opens up.
Mar 27 2014Culberson has made the Rockies' 25-man roster, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.Culberson will mostly serve in a utility infield capacity for the Rockies, backing up DJ LeMahieu at second base and Troy Tulowitzki at shortstop. He beat out Josh Rutledge and non-roster invitee Paul Janish for the gig.
Mar 25 2014Culberson has delivered a .279/.313/.419 batting line over 43 spring at-bats.Culberson is looking to break camp with the Rockies in a utility role and has seemingly done his part to show his capabilities with the bat. While he remains less sure-handed in the field than non-roster invitee Paul Janish - his chief competition for a backup infield role - his ability to also play the outfield may be enough to give him the edge on an Opening Day roster spot.
Sep 16 2013Culberson contributed the Rockies' lone runs in Sunday's loss to the Diamondbacks with a pinch-hit two-run homer. The Rockies remain fond of Culberson's bat, but his lack of polish as an outfielder has led manager Walt Weiss to give Charlie Blackmon and Corey Dickerson the majority of the at-bats in left and center field with Carlos Gonzalez and Dexter Fowler sidelined with injuries the last few weeks. Culberson figures to receive only sporadic at-bats moving forward.
Aug 17 2013Culberson went 1-for-2 and hit his first career homer in Friday's win over the Orioles.Culberson has shown some nice hitting skills in the minors and during his brief stay in the majors, but he's an infielder by trade that has largely been asked to help out in left field while Carlos Gonzalez (finger) is on the DL. Corey Dickerson and Charlie Blackmon are more seasoned defensively and are capable of matching Culberson's production at the plate as well, making them options 1A and 1B on most nights. Culberson figures to only see the occasional spot start and scant pitch-hitting duty.
Jul 29 2013Culberson was called up from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Monday, the Denver Post reports.Culberson has logged most of his time in the middle infield this season but is blocked by Troy Tulowitzki and DJ LaMahieu at the major league level. However, in three recent outings, he manned the outfield, proving he could manage the positions. In 97 games this year, he is slashing a steady .310/.338/.524 with 14 homers, 64 RBI, 63 runs scored, and 13 steals. The power-speed combo will now provide some relief with Carlos Gonzalez dealing with a sprained right middle finger.
Sep 16 2012Culberson was recalled by the Rockies on Sunday, MLBDepthCharts.com reports. He'll provide depth in the middle infield behind the likes of Josh Rutlesge and DJ LaMahieu.
May 19 2012Culberson will be deployed in a straight platoon with Emmanuel Burriss until Ryan Theriot returns from the DL, Comcast SportsNet Bay Area reports.Culberson bats right-handed, while Burriss is a switch-hitter who bats much better from the left side of the plate. Thus, Culberson is likely to see most of his at-bats against lefthanders. In any case, the platoon won't last long, as Theriot figures to be back sometime next week.
May 16 2012Culberson will get a second start at second base Wednesday against the Rockies, the Giants' official Twitter account reports. With Arias dealing with an injury, Culberson will get his best shot at securing playing time at the major league level for the few weeks prior to Freddy Sanchez's return.
May 13 2012Culberson has been called up, Andrew Baggarly of CSN San Francisco reports. He will start at second base for the Giants on Sunday.Culberson will replace Conor Gillaspie on the roster. The second baseman owns a .284/.320/.496 line in 36 games at Triple-A Fresno and could be given a shot at third base with Pablo Sandoval on the mend.
May 13 2012Making his big-league debut, Culberson went 1-for-4 with a strikeout Sunday.Culberson was hitting .284/.320/.496 in the minors before his recent call-up. He's a bit of a hacker lacking plate discipline, but he's got some pop and could see the majority of time at second base, at least in the short term.
May 4 2012Culberson went 1-for-4 and hit his fifth home run of the season during Thursday's win over Salt Lake.Culberson has been a fairly steady player for Fresno this year but he hasn't separated himself in any way to even be considered for a promotion this year, regardless of the tenuous second base situation in San Francisco. He has looked better as of late, with three home runs in his last four games, but until he learns to limit the strikeouts on the Triple-A level, he's not going to receive a promotion anytime soon unless a debilitating injury hits the Giants middle infield.
Apr 22 2012Culberson went 2-for-5 with two doubles, a pair of runs scored and four RBI to help lead Fresno over Tacoma on Saturday. After struggling in Double-A for most of last year, Culberson has produced fairly well on the Triple-A level. He's batting .284 with one home run and seven doubles, but while that's a vast improvement from last year, he still has plenty to work on such as drawing more walks, limiting strikeouts and learning to hit right-handed pitching at better than a .255 clip. Culberson has a very favorable path to the majors, with Freddy Sanchez perpetually hurt and the back-ups struggling, so if he can show some improvements at the plate, he could be given an opportunity at some point this year.
Mar 16 2012Culberson has been optioned to Triple-A, Andrew Baggarly of Comcast Sports reports.
