Nov 3 2023Loup (shoulder) had his $7.5 million team option declined by the Angels on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Loup will officially enter free agency after logging the worst statistical season of his 12-year career with a 6.10 ERA and 1.75 WHIP through 48.2 innings. Despite his poor performance in 2023, the 35-year-old southpaw may still draw interest in the offseason from teams in search of bullpen depth.
Sep 27 2023The Angels transferred Loup (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This move clears out a 40-man roster spot for Kelvin Caceres, who has earned the call to the Angels' big-league bullpen. Loup was shut down last week with a left shoulder strain.
Sep 22 2023The Angels placed Loup on the 15-day injured list Friday with a left shoulder strain, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Loup's injury will put an early end to his 2023 campaign, as the end of the season is less than two weeks away. He finishes with a 6.10 ERA and 1.75 WHIP through 48.2 innings while also notching a save and nine holds. Davis Daniel will come up from Triple-A Salt Lake to fill Loup's roster spot.
Jul 26 2023Loup picked up the save Tuesday against the Tigers, striking out two in a scoreless inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Loup was called upon to protect a one-run lead in the 10th inning after the Tigers tied the game against Carlos Estevez in the ninth. Loup got Javier Baez to ground out before striking out the next two batters, stranding the free runner at second and securing his first save of the season. The 35-year-old Loup's now delivered five straight scoreless appearances (four innings), lowering his ERA to 4.71 with a 1.50 WHIP and 28:11 K:BB across 28.2 innings this year. The left-hander will most likely work in middle-relief for the Halos going forward.
May 21 2023Loup (hamstring) was reinstated off the 15-day injured list by the Angels on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Loup was scheduled to pitch a simulated game for the Angels on Monday, but the left-hander instead is now a part of the Angels' active bullpen with Los Angeles making a plethora of changes to their pitching staff.
May 20 2023Loup (hamstring) is expected to face hitters Monday and could embark upon a rehab assignment soon thereafter, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: On Friday, Loup threw his fourth bullpen since hitting the IL, and his session coming up Monday is likely to be a simulated game, per MLB.com. It's not certain that he'll need a rehab stint, but if he does it should be a short one given that the veteran reliever is less than three weeks removed from his last game appearance. Loup struggled with a 7.00 ERA and 2.11 WHIP through 11 outings prior to the injury; he attributes the poor numbers to throwing more breaking balls and plans to increase his fastball usage upon his return, per Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register.
May 13 2023Loup (hamstring) felt good after throwing a bullpen session Saturday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The bullpen session was already Loup's second since he hit the injured list with a strained right hamstring on Friday, and he's scheduled to throw a third on Monday. He'll be eligible to return next Saturday.
May 5 2023Loup was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday with a hamstring injury, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Loup will be absent from the Angels' bullpen for at least a couple of weeks. The veteran left-hander has struggled to a 7.00 ERA and 2.11 WHIP through nine innings (11 appearances) to begin the 2023 regular season.
Mar 10 2023Loup was named as an injury replacement Friday for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Loup will be a bullpen option for the United States in the mid-to-late innings. The left-hander appeared in 65 games for the Angels in 2022 with a 3.84 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 52:22 K:BB over 58.2 innings of work.
Sep 18 2022Loup saved Saturday's 2-1 win against the Mariners, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Jimmy Herget and Jose Quijada struggling in September and Ryan Tepera working Friday, manager Phil Nevin turned to Loup to close out Saturday's one-run win. The 34-year-old retired the heart of Seattle's lineup in order on 12 pitches, though he did allow hard contact in the form of two lineouts. Loup holds a 3.96 ERA and 1.30 WHIP on the season but has been better recently with a 2.25 ERA in 16 innings across 16 appearances since the calendar flipped to August. Look for Loup and Tepera to lead Los Angeles' closer committee to finish the campaign, at least until one of them falters.
Aug 29 2022Loup (personal) was reinstated from the restricted list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Loup sat out the Angels' three-game series in Toronto over the weekend due to his vaccination status, but he'll rejoin the bullpen ahead of Monday's series opener against the Yankees. Over nine appearances since the start of August, he's given up six runs (two earned) while striking out four in 10.1 innings.
Aug 26 2022Loup (personal) was placed on the restricted list Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Loup is apparently unvaccinated, so he won't be able to enter Canada for the three-game series this weekend in Toronto. The left-hander should rejoin the Angles ahead of Monday's series opener against the Yankees.
Jul 15 2022Loup (0-3) took the loss against Houston on Thursday, allowing an unearned run on one hit in the 10th inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Loup came on in the 10th inning and gave up a one-out single to Jeremy Pena that allowed the automatic runner to score, but he got out of the frame without absorbing any additional damage. However, the Angels were unable to respond in the bottom of the frame, saddling the veteran reliever with the tough-luck loss. Loup had a perfect 6-0 record with the Mets last season, but he's dropped all three of his decisions so far in 2022.
Jun 20 2022Loup earned a hold by striking out the side in a perfect inning against Seattle on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Loup came in to start the seventh inning with the Angels up by three runs. He struck out Jesse Winker, Cal Raleigh and Justin Upton on 16 pitches -- five of which were swinging strikes. Loup struggled over his final four starts in May but has started to turn things around this month, posting a 3.38 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 7:3 K:BB across 5.1 innings.
May 12 2022Loup (0-2) took the loss against Tampa Bay on Wednesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits over one inning. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Angels battled back to tie the game in the eighth inning, and they turned to Loup when the contest went into extra frames. The southpaw immediately served up a double to Vidal Brujan that brought home the designated runner, and Brujan came around to score two batters later on a single by Harold Ramirez. This was a rare poor performance by Loup, who has posted a 1.93 ERA, 0.57 WHIP and 15:2 K:BB while notching six holds over 14 innings on the season.
Apr 24 2022Loup (0-1) was saddled with the loss in a 5-4 defeat at the hands of the Orioles on Saturday, allowing three unearned runs on one hit in two-thirds of an inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Loup relieved starter Noah Syndergaard in the sixth and worked out of a two-on two-out jam. Manager Joe Maddon opted to stick with the lefty for the seventh and an error led to three unearned runs crossing the plate and a loss. Despite the hiccup, Loup is yet to allow an earned run through seven innings while permitting just one hit and walk compared to five strikeouts.
Nov 22 2021Loup signed a two-year, $17 million contract with the Angels on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Loup had a dominant season with the Mets in 2021 and registered 16 holds while posting a 0.95 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in 56.2 innings across 65 appearances (two starts). Several of the Angels' late relievers became free agents following the 2021 campaign, so the southpaw is a candidate to serve in a high-leverage role in 2022.
Sep 19 2021Loup (6-0) got the win in Sunday's 3-2 victory over the Phillies, allowing a hit and a walk with one strikeout in 1.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Loup was brought in to record the final out of the seventh and induced a groundout after walking Bryce Harper to load the bases. New York took the lead in the bottom of the inning and Loup stayed in to pitch a scoreless eighth. The successful outing lowered the 33-year-old's ERA to an even 1.00 and he's yet to allow a run in nine September innings.
Sep 5 2021Loup (5-0) walked one and struck out none in a scoreless inning to earn the win Sunday versus Washington. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw kept the game tied at 6-6 in the seventh inning, and the Mets put him in line for a win by going ahead in the top of the eighth. Since the start of July, Loup has been nearly untouchable, as he's allowed just two runs on 11 hits, 10 walks and three hit batters while striking out 20 in 24 innings. He's pitched to a microscopic 1.13 ERA and 0.92 WHIP with a 49:13 K:BB and 14 holds through 47.2 innings this year.
Jul 26 2021Loup will start Game 2 of Monday's doubleheader versus Atlanta, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Loup will make the second start of his big-league career after delivering two scoreless frames as an opener July 11 against the Pirates. The left-hander is unlikely to pitch much deeper than that Monday, and he has a 1.44 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 37:7 K:BB across 31.1 innings this season.
Jul 11 2021Loup allowed two hits and struck out two in two innings as the opener in Sunday's 6-5 loss to Pittsburgh. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw did his job as the opener, and he was ultimately one of the more effective of six pitchers the Mets deployed Sunday. Loup has thrived in a versatile role with eight holds, three wins, a 1.61 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 34:6 K:BB across 28 innings in 31 appearances. Sunday was his first major-league start, but he'll likely return to a high-leverage bullpen role after the All-Star break.
Jul 9 2021Loup (3-0) allowed a walk and struck out one in one inning, earning the win over Pittsburgh on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw worked the sixth inning of a tied game, immediately following starter Taijuan Walker. Loup was the beneficiary of the Mets' offense exploding for 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead. The 33-year-old has been quite effective lately, allowing just one run in his last 13 innings while racking up a pair of wins and four holds. For the year, he has a 1.73 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 32:6 K:BB in 26 innings across 30 appearances.
Jun 19 2021Loup (2-0) picked up his second win during Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Nationals, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out a batter in one-third of an inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Loup has been steady in recent weeks, with his Saturday outing bringing his scoreless innings streak to 8.1. He was the fortunate recipient of a win Saturday despite retiring just one batter. After a shaky month of May, the left-hander's strong start to June has his ERA down to a very impressive 1.83 on the campaign.
May 27 2021Loup (2-0) pitched a scoreless fifth inning on one hit while striking out two to earn the win in game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Loup allowed a double to Garrett Hampson, but retired the other three batters he faced. The 33-year-old provided another solid performance after slipping as of late, allowing a run in three straight appearances in May. He has a 2.77 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP in 13 innings. He has four holds, but he is not a high-leverage inning reliever and he's not in line for any save opportunities.
May 26 2021Loup has been charged with a run in four of his last seven appearances, and through 6.2 innings in May he has a 5.40 ERA and 1.95 WHIP. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran reliever didn't allow an earned run in April, but he hasn't been as successful since the calendar flipped. Loup remains the top lefty in the Mets' bullpen though, and he has one win and four holds in 16 games with a 3.00 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 13:2 K:BB through 12 innings.
Apr 15 2021Loup struck out two in 1.2 perfect innings, recording his first hold of the season in Wednesday's 5-1 win over Philadelphia. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wednesday's outing was the better of Loup's two thus far in 2021, with the first highlighted by a hit batter and two unearned runs. The 33-year-old had one of his best seasons in 2020 with Tampa Bay, posting a 2.52 ERA resemblant of his 2012-13 seasons in Toronto. Loup will be an essential change-of-pace reliever for the Mets this season as the only lefty -- and a sidearm-throwing one at that -- in a bullpen full of hard-throwing righties.
Mar 25 2021Loup is expected to begin the season as part of the Mets' bullpen, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran reliever should be the top southpaw in the 'pen, giving Loup a path to consistent high-leverage work in a division that includes the likes of Juan Soto, Freddie Freeman and Bryce Harper. Loup has been sharp this spring, posting a 3.18 ERA and 9:0 K:BB over 5.2 innings, and he could be poised to top his career high of 13 holds, set back in 2014 with the Blue Jays.
Jan 27 2021Loup signed a one-year contract with the Mets on Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mets were searching for a left-handed reliever to add to their bullpen, and the team was able to reach an agreement with Loup on Wednesday. The 33-year-old made 24 relief appearances for the Rays in 2020, posting a 2.52 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 22:4 K:BB over 25 innings. Loup should be the team's top southpaw option out of the bullpen in 2021.
Aug 25 2020Loup (3-2) took the loss in the Rays' 6-4 defeat at the hands of the Blue Jays on Monday, allowing two runs (one earned) on a hit and a walk over one-third of an inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw walked into a one-on, two-out scenario in the seventh and eventually surrendered a three-run home run to Randal Grichuck, which also got Loup charged with his first blown save of the season. The 32-year-old has endured a rocky August after opening the season with three scoreless late-July appearances -- he's now carrying a 5.06 ERA over 10.2 innings during the current month, a figure partly comprised of three home runs allowed.
Aug 17 2020Loup (3-0) was credited with the victory in a win over the Blue Jays on Sunday, allowing a hit and recording no walks or strikeouts over a scoreless seventh inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Loup needed a scant eight pitches, six of which he threw for strikes, to get through the trio of Cavan Biggio, Randal Grichuk and Travis Shaw, the latter which he induced an inning-ending double play from. The southpaw has had just one hiccup on the season, which came when he yielded three earned runs on a couple of home runs to these same Blue Jays on Friday, but he's otherwise surrendered just one additional earned run over nine appearances overall.
Aug 11 2020Loup (1-0) was credited with the victory in a win over the Red Sox on Monday, allowing one hit over a scoreless inning while recording three strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran southpaw recorded whiffs of Jackie Bradley, Kevin Pillar and Alex Verdugo, the latter two on swinging strikeouts. Loup has been a dependable relief asset for manager Kevin Cash thus far, posting five scoreless efforts in as many appearances (5.1 innings) while generating a 7:2 K:BB.
Jul 16 2020Loup was added to the Tampa Bay 40-man roster Thursday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Networkreports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Austin Meadows was placed on the injured list in a corresponding move after testing positive for COVID-19. Loup has been trending towards earning an Opening Day roster spot ever since posting a 1.93 ERA and 0.43 WHIP over four Grapefruit League appearances earlier this spring. The veteran southpaw missed almost the entire 2019 season due to a left elbow strain. He currently sports a solid career 3.57 ERA and 1.30 WHIP across eight major-league seasons.
Jul 10 2020Loup was one of four pitchers to participate in a simulated game at summer camp Thursday, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran southpaw is thought to have a firm grip on an Opening Day roster spot after posting a 1.93 ERA and 0.43 WHIP over four Grapefruit League appearances. Loup threw 20 pitches overall during his one inning Thursday, getting 12 into the strike zone and recording a strikeout while facing the quartet of Manuel Margot, Yoshi Tsutsugo, Kevan Smith and Mike Brosseau.
Mar 30 2020Loup was making a strong push for a bullpen spot before spring training was suspended, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Topkin lists the veteran southpaw as part of a group which also includes Peter Fairbanks, Andrew Kittredge and Jalen Beeks that's competing for the final two spots on what's expected to be a 13-man pitching staff. Loup certainly made a strong case for himself during Grapefruit League play by posting a 1.93 ERA, 0.43 WHIP across 4.2 innings over five appearances. The 32-year-old brings a strong multi-season track record as a reliever, having posted a 3.45 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 55 holds across eight major-league campaigns with the Blue Jays, Phillies and Padres.
Oct 31 2019Loup's (elbow) $2 million team option was declined by the Padres on Thursday, making him a free agent. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 31-year-old missed most of 2019 with a left elbow strain as he appeared in just four games. The middle reliever owns a 3.93 ERA with a 1.52 WHIP over the past three seasons. It wouldn't be surprising to see him land a role in another major-league bullpen, although his fantasy value is limited as a middle reliever.
May 27 2019Loup (elbow) had a setback when he recently began throwing again, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune<\/a> reports.Subscribe now<\/a> to instantly reveal our take on this news.

Jan 11 2018Loup signed a one-year, $1.8 million deal with the Blue Jays on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.Loup appeared in 70 games out of the Blue Jays' bullpen in 2017, posting a solid 3.75 ERA over 57.2 innings. He fanned roughly a quarter of the batters he faced but also issued free passes at a career-worst 10.9 percent clip. He'll see plenty of action out of the Toronto bullpen again in 2018.
Aug 14 2017Loup pitched 1.2 hitless innings Monday, allowing just one walk while striking out three Rays en route to his fourth hold of the year.Monday's performance was undoubtedly Loup's best in quite a while. Manager John Gibbons is has shown the willingness to extend Loup when the southpaw is on, but unfortunately the reliever's usage is too fickle to make the reliever worth much in fantasy league.
Aug 2 2017Loup walked the only batter he faced in Wednesday's game against the White Sox, failing to capitalize on the chance to notch his fourth hold of the year. The left-handed specialist maintained a 2.70 ERA and 1.39 WHIP through his first 33 appearances this season. Loup has since posted an 8.76 ERA with a 1.78 WHIP in 14 games. He looked like a contender to rack up holds early in the campaign, but that's since faded, making him unserviceable in all formats.
Jul 7 2017After enjoying regular usage through most of the season, Loup has logged just 4.2 innings over the team's last 17 games. The 29-year-old left-hander was one of Toronto's best relievers through the campaign's early months, but he's seemingly fallen out of favor of late. Loup owned a 2.29 ERA at the conclusion of May, but he struggled greatly in June, posting an 8.64 ERA over 12 appearances last month.
Jun 4 2017Loup allowed one hit in a scoreless inning Sunday versus the Yankees. The left-hander needed just six pitches to get through the seventh inning with the score tied 2-2. Loup's allowed a run in just three of his 26 appearances this season, and the 29-year-old currently sports a career-best 2.14 ERA through 21 innings.
May 31 2017Loup has a 2.37 ERA and 1.42 WHIP across 19 innings this season. The 29-year-old plays the role of situational lefty out of the Blue Jays' bullpen, but still pitches full innings as he has actually fared slightly better against right-handed hitters (.625 OPS) than against lefties (.733 OPS). Loup has two wins and two holds in May could see more of those opportunities, but his high WHIP is less than ideal.
May 9 2017Loup threw an inning in relief Tuesday in a loss to Cleveland. He allowed three earned runs on three hits.It was a tough night for Loup, who was touched up for a three-run homer at the hands of Yan Gomes in the eighth inning. The bomb extended the Indians lead to six, and essentially put the game on ice for Cleveland. With one swing of the bat, his ERA skyrocketed from 0.71 to 2.63.
May 6 2017Loup picked up his first win of the season Friday, allowing a hit and striking out one over an inning of work against the Rays.Toronto's bullpen deployed five relievers Friday after starter Francisco Liriano failed to get out of the fourth inning. Loup was in the right place at the right time, as the Jays put up seven runs while he was the pitcher on record during the 8-4 comeback victory. Despite owning a career-worst 1.63 WHIP, Loup's managed to avoid damage to maintain a career-best 0.77 ERA.
May 4 2017Loup has managed to tiptoe around a 1.69 WHIP en route to an impressive 0.84 ERA through his first 10 appearances of 2017.The left-hander has played with fire this season, and his numbers suggest that it's only a matter of time before he gets burned. Loup's 6.8 BB/9 ranks 81st out of 84 qualified relief pitchers in the AL. He's managed to avoid a disaster by posting an unsustainable 94.4 percent strand rate. Now that fellow southpaw J.P. Howell (shoulder) has returned from the disabled list, Loup will no longer serve as the club's primary lefty out of the bullpen.
Apr 12 2017Loup will serve as the Jays' primary left-hander out of the bullpen until J.P. Howell (shoulder) returns from the 10-day DL, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports.Howell's placement on the DL was retroactive to his last appearance on April 7, meaning he'll be eligible to return on April 18. In the meantime, Loup should have a chance to pick up a couple holds in Howell's stead. Through three games (2.2 innings), Loup has allowed one run on five hits and one walk while notching six strikeouts.
Mar 22 2017Loup failed to record an out while allowing three runs on two hits and two walks in Monday's exhibition contest against Minnesota. The left-hander had run off a string of four scoreless -- and ultra-efficient -- outings before Monday's implosion. Loup's disaster couldn't have come at a worse time. He's among of a handful of relievers fighting for one of the team's final bullpen vacancies. Coming off an injury-plagued campaign, Loup may need to log extra innings at the minor-league level before he's ready to contribute for the Jays.
Feb 22 2017Loup says he "feels great" and is fully-recovered from the elbow injury that plagued his 2016 campaign, John Lott reports.Last season, Loup dealt with the first serious injury of his career, a flexor strain in his elbow that caused him to begin the year on the disabled list. The side-winding lefty now admits now he came back several weeks too soon which led to another setback. "At first, we didn't think it was that bad, but it ended up being worse than we thought," he said. "It took me longer to come back, and then when I actually got back, I probably still wasn't completely ready to be back." When the Blue Jays open their Grapefruit League schedule on Saturday, a fierce battle for two bullpen spots will begin, and Loup will be among a group of eight pitcher in the mix.
Feb 1 2017Loup is the early favorite to take over the left-handed setup role left vacant by the recently-departed Brett Cecil, MLB.com reports. The biggest area for concern in this bullpen is the lack of a bona fide lefty reliever. Loup used to be one of those guys, but he is coming off a pair of disappointing seasons, and he'll really need to show things have changed before expectations can be raised. With Cecil gone, Loup has the most big league experience of the potential replacements, but he will also receive competition from Matt Dermody, Chad Girodo and Brett Oberholtzer. More additions likely will have to be made here, but until that happens, Loup should be in for a heavy workload. The walks will have to come down if he's going to cement that position, because a the 5.02 ERA he posted in 2016 simply won't cut it in this role.
Sep 5 2016Loup is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports.Although he's thrown just 19.2 innings across 20 games with Triple-A Buffalo, Loup has had an impressive year. He owns a 1.83 ERA and 1.22 WHIP at the Triple-A level and has walked only three batters. Unfortunately, he hasn't had as much luck with the big club, where he has an ERA and WHIP of 7.45 and 1.34, respectively.
Aug 21 2016The Blue Jays recalled Loup from Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday.Loup will take the roster spot of Aaron Sanchez, who will head to the minors before making his next big-league start in 10 days. Loup will work primarily as a left-handed specialist for the Blue Jays, though he could pitch an inning here or there if needed.
Jul 12 2016Loup made nine appearances in relief during the first half of the season, posting a 6.75 ERA and 0.75 WHIP with seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings. The left-handed specialist got a late start to his season, as he was not activated from the DL (elbow) until May 28. He pitched decently, but was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo in mid-June. Loup was recalled at the beginning of July and notched two flawless outings, in one of which he earned his first hold of the year. The 28-year-old had amassed 22 holds and four saves combine in 2014 and 2015 while appearing in 60-plus games both seasons, but Loup appears to be a non-factor in the team's plans for 2016.
Jul 2 2016Loup was recalled Saturday prior to the game against the Indians, Toronto play-by-play announcer Mike Wilner reports.Loup was recently optioned a couple weeks ago, spending time with Triple-A Buffalo posting a 2-0 record with no earned runs over eight innings of work. During his time at the major league level this season, the 28-year-old has compiled a 3.60 ERA with a 1.30 WHIP in 10 innings out of the bullpen.
Jun 14 2016Loup was optioned Tuesday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet reports.Loup appears to be shaking off some rust as he's given up three earned runs along with a blown save in three innings since his recall. While he's only given up three hits over that three-inning span, two of those have gone by way of the long ball. The 28-year-old reliever will likely head to Triple-A Buffalo now to sharpen up his mechanics.
May 29 2016In his first appearance for the Jays since October 4, Loup (elbow) struck out the only two batters he faced Saturday against the Red Sox.Nobody could be more happy to see Loup back in action (he was activated Saturday before the game) than Jays manager John Gibbons, who has had to bear the brunt of a crumbling bullpen in the early goings. Gibbons called on Loup with two runners on and only one-out in the seventh, and the left-hander delivered. Moving forward, Loup should be a valuable source of holds as a left-handed specialist.
May 28 2016Loup (elbow) was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Satruday, Toronto play-by-play announcer Mike Wilner reports.Loup has been out of action since spring training due to a forearm issue. His recovery appears to have gone according to plan, as he had an expected return date of late May. The Blue Jays have also placed Troy Tulowitzki on the DL in a corresponding move. Loup saw his ERA dip to 4.46 in the 2015 season.
May 28 2016Loup, out since spring training with a forearm issue in his pitching arm, got two outs while giving up a hit and striking out one Friday for Triple-A Buffalo. It was Loup's third straight appearance for Triple-A Buffalo. The lefty appears on track to meet his expected return date on May 28.
May 25 2016Loup (elbow) seems to be close to returning from the disabled list, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports.Manager John Gibbons hinted at Loup's return Wednesday, saying that he could be the player who joins the roster when the Blue Jays decide to go back to a seven-man bullpen. The left-hander hasn't allowed a run in two rehab appearances with Triple-A Buffalo, so he seems to be back in good health. There hasn't been any official move yet, but there is some speculation that Loup could be activated within the next few days.
May 13 2016Loup (elbow) will begin his rehab assignment at High-A Dunedin on Saturday, Barry Davis of Sportsnet reports.Loup has been working his way back from a forearm strain he suffered early in spring training, but he has made significant strides of late and he's ready to head out on a rehab assignment. He'll begin at High-A on Saturday and will have up to 20 days of time on his assignment prior to being activated from the disabled list.
May 1 2016Loup (elbow) will throw off a mound Monday, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet reports.Loup said that if Monday's session goes well, he will head to extended spring training, where he'll likely begin facing hitters. The lefty, who struck out 46 batters in 42.1 innings last season, could be back with the Blue Jays by mid-May.
Apr 27 2016Loup will throw a bullpen session Friday, Mike Wilner of Sportsnet reports.Loup was sidelined in early March with a flexor tendon strain, but he's made steady progress since then. He played catch off flat ground in mid-March, threw from 90 feet several weeks ago, and is now set to throw a bullpen session. While he's still smack in the middle of his rehab program, he's showing positive signs and is approaching a return to the Blue Jays sometime in May.
Apr 17 2016Loup (elbow) was able to throw from 90 feet Sunday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet reports.Loup said he's no longer experiencing any pain in his elbow after he was diagnosed with a flexor tendon strain early in spring training, but because of the extensive time he missed, it may take him a little longer before he comes off the DL. He'll likely expand his throwing distance in the coming days before perhaps tossing a bullpen session.
Apr 2 2016Loup (elbow) was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 25 on Saturday, Toronto play-by-play announcer Mike Wilner reports. The Blue Jays officially placed several of their injured players on the DL Saturday with retroactive dates. Loup's recovery from a flexor strain has had a couple starts and stops, and it became apparent Friday that the veteran lefty would have to start the season on the disabled list. Once he begins ramping up his activity, his timetable for a return should come into focus.
Apr 1 2016Loup (elbow) is starting over in his recovery from a flexor strain, and he will start the season on the DL, John Lott of VICE Sports reports. He had started to throw, then felt mild pain in his elbow and had a cortisone shot Tuesday, and now says the elbow feels fine. It was apparently some sore of impingement, but now that he is feeling better he will begin a throwing program Saturday. There is no timetable for his return, but late April seems like the most likely scenario at this point.
Mar 17 2016Loup (forearm) threw off flat ground Thursday but is still without a timetable to begin throwing off of a mound and will not be ready for the start of the season, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports. This is the left-hander's first time throwing a baseball since straining his flexor tendon earlier this month. Loup is making steady progress, but he'll have to wait awhile before pitching in a game again. Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, Loup has been ruled out for the start of the season, which opens the door for lefties such as Randy Choate, Chad Girodo, and switch-pitcher Pat Venditte to take his spot as the second lefty behind Brett Cecil.
Mar 4 2016Porcello allowed a run on three hits in two innings during his spring-training debut Thursday against Minnesota.Porcello faced a total of eight batters, five of whom hit the ball hard, but it's way too early to read into spring numbers or performance. He told the Boston Globe that the "next step is to work on getting that ball down."
Mar 3 2016Loup resumed throwing Thursday after experiencing some forearm tightness but reportedly didn't feel good afterward, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsbet reports. It's unclear when the tightness in his forearm emerged, but apparently it's affecting him quite a bit at the moment. The Blue Jays are going to assess his arm to determine the next steps, so we should know fairly soon how long Loup will have to stay out of action.
Jan 15 2016Loup agreed to a one-year, $1.05 million deal with the Blue Jays on Friday, avoiding arbitration, the Toronto Star's Brendan Kennedy reports. While Loup is an excellent LOOGY, he is at best fourth in the pecking order for saves in the Jays bullpen, so his fantasy value is primarily limited to leagues that award holds. Last year he posted a 4.46 ERA -- by far a career worst -- but his 2.89 xFIP gives hope to the notion that it was a one-year blip.
Sep 1 2015The Blue Jays recalled Loup from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday, Brendan Kennedy of the Toronto Star reports.Loup has not had much success with the big club this year, posting a 5.20 ERA in 48 outings, but the club still wanted to add him and his 216 big league appearances to the roster for the final few weeks of the regular season. He figures to work situationally the rest of the way.
Aug 16 2015Loup was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo following Sunday's game, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet Canada reports.Loup never truly shaped into the late-inning arm the Blue Jays had been hoping for this season, and an earned run Sunday that brought his ERA up to 5.20 seems to have been the last straw. If he can show improvement and consistency in the minors, Loup could get a chance as a September call-up. His fantasy value would be highly limited if that occurs, however.
Aug 13 2015Loup struck out two and gave up one hit in a scoreless inning of Wednesday's victory over the A's.Amazingly, this was the first time Loup has pitched since the trade deadline, where the Blue Jays made a number of moves to bolster their bullpen. With Loup on the outside looking in, he pitched well in his first appearance in almost two weeks, striking out multiple batters in an appearance since July 2. With so many other options in the pen and Loup's 5.05 ERA and 1.23 WHIP, he'll have a very uphill climb to be used in high leverage situations again this season.
Jul 11 2015Loup pitched 0.1 innings with a strikeout while giving up a hit in Friday's loss to the Royals.Loup is in the precarious position of being a lefty who struggles to get lefties out. Against left-handed hitters, he holds a .286 batting average against. His ERA now sits at 4.96 and while he has a strong K:BB ratio of 36 strikeouts to just five walks, he struggles to get through an inning totally unscathed, having last accomplished that feat on June 15.
Jun 10 2015Loup pitched a perfect eighth inning, striking out one in Tuesday's victory over the Marlins.Loup has been excellent at home and far from it on the road. With a 1.50 ERA at home in 12 innings and a 8.38 ERA in 9.2 innings on the road, the 27-year-old can be the important piece of the Blue Jays bullpen they desperately need as right now, Brett Cecil and Roberto Osuna are the only reliable options night-in and night-out. Loup's lack of high leverage situations will continue to suppress his already diminished fantasy value.
May 31 2015Loup gave up two hits and one run, walking away with the loss in Saturday's 3-2 defeat to the Twins. After a four appearance stretch where he allowed just two hits and struck out five while not conceding a run, Loup regressed once again, allowing the game-winning triple to Brian Dozier in the seventh inning on Saturday. His ERA now sits at 5.12 and he has extremely limited fantasy value.
May 13 2015Loup gave up one hit across one inning of work in Tuesday's 10-2 victory over the Orioles.Since giving up his last earned run on April 28, Loup has settled into something of a groove, as Tuesday marked his fourth straight appearance without giving up an earned run. Over that time span, he's pitched 3.2 innings, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out three. Against the Orioles, he only needed seven pitches (all of which were strikes) to get out of the inning. Due to his lack of counting stats, Loup has limited fantasy value unless he starts striking out batters at a much higher rate.
Apr 29 2015Loup gave up three hits, two earned runs and recorded two strikeouts in 0.2 innings of work in Tuesday's 11-8 victory over the Red Sox.Loup was pitching for the third day in a row and got touched up as a result of it, giving up an eighth inning home run to Hanley Ramirez. He's proven to be one of the more reliable options out of the Jays' pen, but Tuesday's outing raised his ERA back up to 5.40. He has been striking more batters of out, punching out five in his last three innings after recording only four in his first seven innings of 2015. Loup probably won't figure in to the closer discussion and his inconsistent strikeout totals give him limited fantasy value.
Apr 22 2015Loup gave up one hit and one unearned run in Tuesday's 13-6 victory over the Orioles.Loup has had a couple of rough outings this season, notably giving up three earned runs without recording an out on Apr. 8 to the Yankees. He's bounced back considerably from there, sporting a WHIP of 0.39 in his five appearances since then. His low strikeout rate coupled with his unlikelihood of picking up saves gives him limited fantasy value.
Mar 24 2015Loup is likely to slot into the setup man role with Brett Cecil named as the closer and Aaron Sanchez likely to move into the starting rotation.Loup is having a pretty solid spring, giving up two earned runs across five innings. He had a strong year last season, pitching 68.2 innings with a 3.15 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP while striking out 56. With low strikeout totals, Loup's fantasy value is tied to whether or not he gets a chance to close, which as of the start of the season doesn't look like it will happen. In deeper leagues, he may be worth stashing in case Cecil runs into trouble as a closer.
Feb 16 2015Loup is among the candidates to close for the Jays if Aaron Sanchez is used as a starter to begin the season, the Blue Jays' official site reports. Most likely, Brett Cecil will close if the Jays don't bring in a veteran option, while Loup would take on a more prominent setup role. Still, the job is relatively wide open depending on the decision regarding how Sanchez will be used. Loup's walk rate spiked last season (from 4.6% in 2013 to 10.6%), and he may be better suited as a setup option anyway given his sub-20.0% strikeout rate (career 6.9 K/9).
Jun 7 2014Loup struggled in relief of Mark Buehrle on Saturday, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks in just two-thirds of an inning.Loup raised his ERA from 2.43 to 3.56 on the season from the outing. Coming in to Saturday, the lefty hadn't allowed a run in 15 straight outings. He managed to get the leadoff batter out, but proceeded to allow five of the next six batters to reach before being taken out in favor of Steve Delabar.
May 6 2014Loup will only take the hill Tuesday in Philadelphia, if a save situation arises, Barry Davis of Sportsnet reports.Loup has been equally disastrous and on point in his last two appearances, but with a 7.63 K/9 across 15.1 innings this season, he'll generally be a boon in terms of punchouts, with the potential for a save evident in the short term.
May 3 2014The Blue Jays will use a closer-by-committee until Casey Janssen (back) returns, with Loup, Brett Cecil and Steve Delabar the top candidates for ninth-inning work, The National Post's John Lott reports.Loup and Cecil are both lefties, so they may get in each other's way if the Blue Jays play matchups. Steve Delabar is the sole right-hander of the trio, which probably makes him the best best to earn saves. Sergio Santos will work in the 6th-8th innings, while Casey Janssen is likely to return within the next week or two. Once Janssen returns, he'll presumably slot back into the closer's role.
May 3 2014Loup will likely pitch the ninth inning Saturday, should a save situation arise, Sportsnet's Barry Davis reports.Sergio Santos has been booted from the closer's role, but Loup isn't a candidate to replace him beyond the next few days. Casey Janssen (back) is nearing a return from the disabled list, while right-hander Steve Delabar and fellow southpaw Brett Cecil are both arguably better pitchers than Loup. Still, if you're looking for an under-the-radar option to pick up a save Saturday, Loup makes for an excellent choice.
May 1 2014Loup picked up a seven-out save in Thursday's 7-3 win over the Royals.Loup struck out just one batter and only needed 22 pitches, so manager John Gibbons opted to let the rest of his bullpen rest. The lefty would be luck to get more than one or two saves the rest of the season, as he probably isn't even the top southpaw in the Jays' pen. That would be Brett Cecil, who has an 18:9 K:BB ratio and 5.23 through 10.1 innings. If Cecil can't cut down on the walks, Loup could perhaps position himself for the occasional save when the matchups dictate using a lefty over Sergio Santos/Casey Janssen.
Apr 25 2014Loup was apparently "sick as a dog" Thursday night, according to manager John Gibbons, and he may not be available for Friday's game, the National Post's John Lott reports. If you're using Loup in a league with daily roster moves for his rate stats, it'd be wise to go with another option Firday, as Loup may get the night off.
Apr 19 2014Loup will serve as the Blue Jays' closer on Saturday according to manager John Gibbons.Loup is not replacing Sergio Santos as the Blue Jays' closer; Santos is unavailable because he has thrown 40 pitches the last two games. Still, saves are tough to come by in most leagues, so if you are looking for a save, Loup is worth picking up for the day.
Aug 26 2013Loups was reinstated from the paternity list Monday, the Blue Jays' official website reports.Loup will return to the Blue Jays after missing a weekend series against the Astros. The lefty specialist owns a 2.47 ERA for the season but a 6.23 ERA through nine appearances in the month of August. He's held left-handed hitters to a .476 OPS this season, while getting mashed by right-handed hitters to the tune of a .293/.318/.464 slash line (.782 OPS).
Aug 23 2013Loup was placed on the paternity list Friday.Loup can remain away from the team for up to three days, meaning his presence may not be felt out of the Blue Jays' bullpen for the weekend's entire three-game set in Houston. After a relatively strong first half, he has faltered a bit since the break, posting a 0-3 record, 4.02 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and 11:5 K:BB ratio in 15.2 innings across 14 outings.
Jul 11 2013Loup tossed a scoreless seventh inning in Thursday's 4-2 loss to the Indians.Loup hasn't received as much attention as some of the other standouts in Toronto's bullpen, even though he owns a 2.00 ERA and 0.98 WHIP while ranking second on the team with 38 appearances. He has a modest 33 strikeouts through 45 innings, but has found success by issuing just five free passes all season. Loup, Brett Cecil, and Steve Delabar give the Blue Jays arguably the best group of middle relievers and setup options in the American League, although the Rangers would likely beg to differ.
Jun 3 2013Loup pitched a clean 11th inning and earned his second save of the year Sunday against San Diego.Casey Janssen pitched the tenth, and actually earned the win in the extra-inning affair. Loup remains behind Janssen in terms of save chances, but should Janssen be unavailable, or perhaps be hampered by any sort of injury, Loup may be in line for some save opportunities down the road.
Apr 12 2013Loup pitched three perfect innings with one strikeout to earn the save as the Blue Jays beat the Royals 8-4 on Friday.Loup grabbed the Jays' final bullpen spot with a solid spring, but doesn't have much in the way of fantasy value. He's being used more as a long-relief options so holds and saves are a rarity and with a low strikeout rate, he doesn't offer up much in the way of value.
Sep 2 2012Loup threw 1.2 shutout innings in the loss to the Rays on Saturday, lowing his ERA to 1.99.Loup continues to pitch extremely well for the Blue Jays down the stretch, posting a 0.71 WHIP to go along with his low ERA. He is putting himself in position to earn a setup role verses lefties next season.
Aug 19 2012Loup recorded two outs, including picking off David Murphy, to close out the seventh inning for the Blue Jays on Saturday.Loup struggled when he was called up in July but has found his stride in August. He has only allowed one hit over his past 6 games as he tries to work himself into a more important role in the bullpen.
Jul 23 2012Loup played an important role for Toronto in their win over the Red Sox on Sunday. He pitched 2.1 shutout innings without allowing a base runner. This was an impressive performance for Loup as he stopped the Red Sox from making a comeback in the win. With Toronto's additions to the bullpen, he will likely stay in a middle relief role through this season.
Jul 16 2012Loup pitched two perfect innings in his debut performance Saturday during a win over the Indians.Loup is likely to hit some bumps in the road since he is up to the majors faster then the Blue Jays would've liked. If he continues to have success early however, he could find himself in a position to record some holds quickly.
Jul 12 2012The Blue Jays called up Loup on Thursday, Sportsnet's Barry Davis reports.Loup will skip Triple-A and come straight to the Major Leagues after the injury to Luis Perez. He was 0-3 with a 2.78 ERA in 37 relief appearances in Double-A. He struck out 43 batters in only 45.1 innings, while walking only 14.
