Jun 29 2024Hendriks (elbow) threw a second bullpen session Friday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All 20 of Hendriks' pitches Friday were fastballs, and the right-hander noted Saturday that three more bullpen sessions are planned next week. The 35-year-old is working his way back from Tommy John surgery from last August, and he is aiming to return to the majors before the end of the regular season. In his last full season in 2022 as a member of the White Sox, Hendriks registered a 2.81 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 85:16 K:BB across 57.2 innings.
Jun 26 2024Hendriks (elbow) threw a bullpen session Wednesday consisting of about 15 fastballs, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks was back on the mound for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last August and was upbeat following the workout. The veteran reliever believes he can make it back from the 60-day injured list by the end of August, but he's not far along enough in the rehab process yet for the Red Sox to put a definitive target date on his return. The Red Sox signed Hendriks to a two-year deal in February with the understanding that anything the right-hander gave the club in 2024 would be a bonus, so the team likely doesn't have any visions of the three-time All-Star supplanting Kenley Jansen as the team's closer when he eventually returns.
Jun 25 2024Hendriks (elbow) is slated to throw a bullpen session later this week, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It will be his first time throwing off a mound since he underwent Tommy John surgery in early August of last year. Hendriks is hoping to join the Red Sox' relief corps at some point during the final two months of this season, and while that's possible, the bigger-picture goal is having him healthy and ready to roll as a member of Boston's 2025 bullpen.
Jun 1 2024Hendriks (elbow) threw fastballs and breaking balls off the front of the mound Thursday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Moving to any part of a mound represents another step forward in Hendriks' rehab from Tommy John surgery. The reliever had previously thrown off flat ground only.
May 14 2024Hendriks (elbow) extended his throwing program out to 120 feet Monday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks also threw pitches off flat ground. He believes he's on track for a return roughly at the trade deadline, which would be about the one-year anniversary of the reliever's Tommy John surgery.
Feb 26 2024Hendriks (elbow) was spotted Monday playing catch from about 60 feet, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks is in the early stages of his throwing program after undergoing Tommy John surgery Aug. 2. The veteran reliever has stated that he hopes to be ready to make his Red Sox debut by late July, though the final month of the season may represent a more realistic target for Hendriks, assuming he navigates his throwing program without issue. Hendriks signed a two-year deal with Boston last week, with the organization bringing him aboard with the aim of having him being a more impactful contributor out of the bullpen in 2025.
Feb 19 2024Hendriks (elbow) signed a two-year, $10 million contract with the Red Sox on Monday, Jen McCaffery and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic report. The deal includes a mutual option for 2026. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks is recovering from Tommy John surgery which he had last August. He is hoping to return around midseason, although that timeline seems a tad optimistic. This is mostly a play for 2025, with the Red Sox hoping Hendriks can rediscover the form that made him a three-time All-Star. Hendriks turned 35 earlier this month.
Feb 14 2024Hendricks (elbow) holds multiple contract offers and has set a Thursday deadline for signing with a team, but he'll otherwise hold a throwing showcase in late July if he doesn't receive an offer to his liking, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Regardless of whether he signs with a team this week or at some point after he holds the planned showcase, Hendriks is unlikely to be ready to pitch in MLB games until the final two months of the regular season after he underwent Tommy John surgery Aug. 2 of last year. The major elbow injury was another tough break on the health front for the veteran reliever, who missed most of the first two months of last season while recovering from non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Even before he developed the elbow injury, Hendriks' velocity was down a couple ticks from 2022 and he had struggled with command in his limited MLB and minor-league rehab appearances, so the three-time All-Star may not be viewed as a viable closing candidate for his next team as he heads into his age-35 season.
Nov 3 2023Hendriks (elbow) had his $15 million team option for 2024 declined by the White Sox on Friday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The White Sox still owe $15 million to Hendriks, and they have opted to pay him annual installments of $1.5 million through 2033. The 34-year-old reliever missed the early stages of the season while recovering from treatment for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and he is set to miss the vast majority of the 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in August. Despite his unavailability for the coming campaign, Hendriks could still attract a two-year deal in free agency.
Aug 10 2023Hendriks (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list Thursday, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: To create room on the 40-man roster, the White Sox placed Hendricks on the 60-day injured list. The closer recently underwent Tommy John surgery, so he is sidelined until late in the 2024 season. In a corresponding move, the White Sox claimed reliever Deivi Garcia off waivers from the Yankees.
Aug 2 2023Hendriks (elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery Wednesday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: At least check, Hendriks was taking encouraging steps forward in his recovery from a bout of right elbow inflammation, but something must have gone wrong in a recent throwing session. The veteran reliever made a triumphant return earlier this season after he recovered non-Hodgkin lymphoma, but he wound up appearing in only five games for the White Sox and will now be sidelined until at least late 2024.
Jul 20 2023White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said Thursday that Hendriks (elbow) peaked at 93.8 mph in his simulated game Wednesday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Grifol said that Hendriks' velocity was "up" in the session, which must have been in reference to a bullpen session over the weekend considering the reliever has averaged 95.4 mph in his five appearances with the White Sox this season. The skipper wasn't sure what was next for Hendriks, saying the pitcher will "go in and talk to the trainers and we'll see what our next step is going to be." Hendriks has been out since early June with right elbow inflammation.
Jul 18 2023Hendriks (elbow) will throw a simulated game Wednesday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After being cleared to throw June 27, Hendriks will advance to the next step in his recovery process Wednesday. Assuming all goes well during his sim game, the 34-year-old closer will presumably embark on a rehab assignment before returning to Chicago's bullpen. Hendriks has pitched just five innings this season, surrendering three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three batters.
Jul 4 2023Hendriks (elbow) will throw a bullpen session this weekend, Scot Gregor of the Chicago Daily Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks began playing catch a little less than a week ago and now is nearly ready to test things out from the bump. He's been sidelined since early June with right elbow inflammation. It's not clear whether Hendriks will require a rehab assignment before rejoining the White Sox' bullpen, although it seems likely.
Jun 27 2023Hendriks (elbow) is scheduled to play catch Wednesday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It will be his first throwing of any kind since he was placed on the injured list June 11 with right elbow inflammation. Hendriks could perhaps be ready to return to the White Sox shortly after the All-Star break if he is able to avoid setbacks, but there is no official timetable yet. He's made only five appearances in the majors this year, mostly due to an offseason diagnosis of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Jun 25 2023Manager Pedro Grifol said Sunday that Hendriks (elbow) won't return from the 15-day injured list before the All-Star break, which runs July 10-13, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 34-year-old received both cortisone and platelet-rich-plasma injections shortly after he landed on the shelf June 11 with right elbow inflammation, and he's still more than a couple weeks away from his return. GM Rick Hahn said last Monday he was hoping Hendriks would begin throwing within the next week or so, but it's unclear at this point if the right-hander has started up his throwing program.
Jun 19 2023White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said Monday that he's hopeful Hendriks (elbow) can resume a throwing program within the next week or so, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks has been given both a cortisone shot and a platelet-rich plasma injection in hopes that they will help speed along the healing process as he works his way back from right elbow inflammation. He'll need to go through a throwing progression and is presumably still multiple weeks away from a return.
Jun 13 2023Hendriks (elbow) received a cortisone shot Sunday and will get a PRP injection in the coming days, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks had to get both shots cleared with his oncologist first. The right-hander was placed on the injured list by the White Sox on Sunday with elbow inflammation, and while his MRI revealed no structural damage, there's no set timetable for when the closer will be able to return to the mound for Chicago. It's likely Hendriks will be shut down from throwing while he recovers from the injections, however, so it appears he won't be back on the bump for the White Sox before the end of June at the earliest.
Jun 11 2023General manager Rick Hahn said that Hendricks (elbow), whom the White Sox placed on the 15-day injured list Sunday, will undergo further evaluation before the team provides an update on his status Tuesday, Rob Schaefer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The White Sox attributed Hendriks' placement on the IL to right elbow inflammation, but Hahn suggested that the closer is dealing with symptoms similar to the flexor strain that cost him approximately three weeks of action during the 2022 season. Hendriks' upcoming tests should help the White Sox pinpoint a more precise diagnosis, which will provide a clearer timeline for his recovery. Given Hendriks' recent history with forearm/elbow issues, fantasy managers should probably expect him to miss beyond the minimum 15 days, potentially opening the door for Kendall Graveman or Joe Kelly to see some save opportunities.
Jun 10 2023Hendriks (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning without allowing a baserunner to earn the win Friday against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks entered the game with the score tied in the ninth inning and set down the Marlins in order. Given the White Sox were playing at home, his usage suggests that he was being treated as the team's closer. In addition, Kendall Graveman pitched the eighth inning, and he appears to be Hendriks' top competition for saves. The White Sox could use a committee in the ninth frame for the time being to ease Hendriks back into action, but it certainly appears that he's trending toward a majority of the save chances moving forward.
Jun 6 2023Hendriks picked up the save Tuesday against the Yankees. He allowed one run on one hit over one inning. He did not record a strikeout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks got off to a rough start Tuesday, giving up a solo homer to Josh Donaldson on his first pitch of the ninth inning but bounced back to force three straight groundouts to snare his first save of the season. After missing the early portions of the season, Hendriks has already received several late-inning looks and has racked up a save and a win across his last two appearances. He appears to be well on his way to reclaiming sole ownership of the closing role, as his primary competitors -- Joe Kelly and Kendall Graveman-- were called upon in the seventh and the eighth innings before Hendriks entered for the final frame.
Jun 4 2023Hendriks (1-0) pitched a perfect inning and struck out two, earning the win Sunday over the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks had some trouble in his season debut, but he's pitched perfect innings on consecutive days during the weekend series against Detroit. The 34-year-old appears to be settling in, and his usage in the ninth inning of a 2-2 game Sunday is a strong sign for him getting into high-leverage spots. He remains in search of his first save after returning from non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Hendriks will likely remain in a closer committee for a while longer -- Kendall Graveman and Joe Kelly are also part of the White Sox's late-inning mix.
May 30 2023Hendriks (illness) allowed two earned runs on three hits and one walk while pitching the eighth inning of Monday's 6-4 loss to the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in January and requiring multiple months of chemotherapy, Hendriks was cleared to return from the 15-day injured list Monday for his 2023 season debut. Since Hendriks wasn't particularly sharp over his six rehab appearances prior to being activated -- he gave up six earned runs in five innings -- White Sox manager Pedro Grifol elected to ease the veteran closer back into the mix in a non-save situation Monday. Hendriks entered the contest with the White Sox trailing 4-3 and received a rousing ovation from the home crowd, but he wasn't able to execute during his time on the mound. He needed 27 pitches just to record three outs and threw just 16 strikes. Though the White Sox likely envision Hendriks eventually reclaiming full-time closing duties, Kendall Graveman and Joe Kelly could both still be in the mix for save chances in the short term while Hendriks attempts to regain form following a lengthy layoff from game action.
May 29 2023Hendriks was activated from the 15-day injured list by the White Sox on Monday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks needed several months of chemotherapy following a diagnosis in January of non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He struggled on his rehab assignment, but his stuff reportedly ticked up during more recent live batting practice sessions. Manager Pedro Grifol said that Hendriks' first appearance would not come in the ninth inning, per Fegan, but the skipper is hoping the adrenaline of pitching in a major-league game will allow Hendriks' performance to continue trending up. If that happens, we should see him closing games again soon enough.
May 28 2023Hendriks (illness) is expected to be reinstated from the injured list ahead of Monday's game against the Angels, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in January and spent several months undergoing chemotherapy, but he had his last round of chemotherapy in early April and announced that he was cancer-free April 20. The 34-year-old has spent the last several weeks on a rehab assignment in which he allowed six runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out five in five innings over six appearances. Hendriks threw several live batting practice sessions in recent days and has been cleared to return from the injured list when the White Sox return home Monday. It's unclear whether the team will immediately slot him into the closer's role, but he's been one of the most dominant ninth-inning options in recent seasons and will likely be entrusted in high-leverage situations following his inspirational recovery.
May 26 2023Hendriks (illness) threw a successful round of live batting practice Friday in Detroit, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: "His numbers were really good," manager Pedro Grifol said of Hendriks' velocity readings during the workout. "He ticked up from Cleveland. Really good step in the right direction." The veteran closer now has three live batting practice sessions under his belt since a mostly underwhelming six-appearance rehab stint with Triple-A Charlotte. Recovered from an offseason diagnosis of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Hendriks could make a triumphant return to the White Sox bullpen at some point this weekend.
May 22 2023Hendricks (illness) looked "really good" in a live batting practice session Monday and is "getting really close" to returning, White Sox manager Pedro Grifol told Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: "The velocity was really high," Grifol said. "His slider was really, really good. He's trending in the right direction. He's getting really close." Hendriks is expected to throw another live batting practice session Thursday before being re-evaluated. If things go as well that day as they did Monday, he seems likely to be activated this weekend.
May 19 2023Manager Pedro Grifol told reporters Friday that there is no set date for Hendriks (illness) to return, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Grifol confirmed that Hendriks threw around 20 pitches in his live bullpen session before the game Thursday, but he mentioned repeatedly that the team will have to meet as a group to determine his next step. Hendriks did struggle in his rehab assignment with a 10.80 ERA over five innings during six appearances with Triple-A Charlotte, but all signs point to him being ready to pitch for the White Sox in the near term.
May 18 2023Hendriks (illness) will throw live batting practice Friday and, if it goes well, is expected to be activated shortly thereafter, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said Wednesday that Hendriks will not be activated this week, but it would appear the reliever has a good shot to return early next week. Hendriks struggled with his velocity and results during a rehab assignment but should continue to regain strength as he further distances himself from treatment for Stage 4 non-Hodgkins's lymphoma.
May 17 2023White Sox manager Pedro Grifol confirmed Wednesday that Hendriks (illness) won't be activated this week, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks has temporarily paused his minor-league rehab assignment and will head to Chicago on Thursday for a meeting with White Sox management. The veteran closer has allowed six earned runs through five innings so far with Triple-A Charlotte, which works out to a 10.80 ERA. He's on the road back from an offseason diagnosis of Stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
May 16 2023White Sox manager Pedro Grifol told reporters Tuesday that Hendriks (illness) will make another rehab appearance for Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Grifol said the team would then evaluate Hendriks after that outing. Hendriks has struggled in his rehab appearances thus far with an 11.25 ERA over four innings from five appearances. If the right-hander pitches well for the Knights on Thursday, he could be back with Chicago at the end of the week, but the team won't rush Hendriks back, as he is still a little over a month removed from his last round of chemotherapy for non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
May 12 2023The rehab schedule for Hendriks (illness) will be re-evaluated after Sunday's appearance for Triple-A Charlotte, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks gave up four runs in two-thirds of an inning for Charlotte on Thursday. His current "tentative schedule," according to the reliever, calls for outings Sunday and then either Tuesday or Wednesday, but he acknowledged that he's not yet ready to rejoin the White Sox bullpen. Hendriks could still be activated from the injured list late next week, but there's a good chance the team might play it safe and slow down the 34-year-old's rehab, as he's still barely a month removed from his last round of chemotherapy for non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
May 10 2023White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said Wednesday that Hendriks (illness) has at least three rehab outings left, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The schedule calls for Hendriks to do back-to-back outings at Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday and Thursday, take two days off, and then pitch again for Charlotte on Sunday. He'll be evaluated for a possible return to Chicago's active roster after that. The 34-year-old closer is triumphantly nearing the end of his recovery from an offseason diagnosis of Stage 4 non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He's allowed one run through two innings (two appearances) on the farm.
May 7 2023Hendriks (illness) yielded one run on two hits over an inning of work in his second rehab appearance with Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He threw 14 pitches in the outing and didn't record a strikeout. Hendriks' velocity remained down in the appearance, as he averaged 94.5 mph with his fastball, per Baseball Savant. That's up more than two mph from his first outing, though, which is a good sign. Hendriks, of course, has a good excuse for still regaining his strength given that he was undergoing chemotherapy a month ago. He's expected to make 2-to-3 more rehab appearances before rejoining the White Sox' bullpen.
May 5 2023Hendriks (illness) threw a scoreless inning with a strikeout in a rehab appearance for Triple-A Charlotte on Friday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks needed just nine pitches to get out of the inning. The right-hander could work again Sunday, and he eventually work make back-to-back appearances for the Knights before he rejoins the White Sox and their bullpen. Hendriks has missed all of the 2023 season after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma over the winter, and he should be closing games for the White Sox in a very short time.
May 3 2023White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said Wednesday that Hendriks (illness) will need four or five minor-league rehab appearances, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks is scheduled to head down to Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday night and will begin appearing in games there over the weekend. Mapping out a probable timeline that will eventually include back-to-back outings on the farm, the veteran closer appears on track to be activated by the White Sox around the middle of May. He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma over the winter and completed his final round of chemotherapy in April.
May 2 2023Hendriks (illness) will begin a minor-league rehab assignment Wednesday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Less than two weeks after announcing he's cancer free, Hendriks is now officially slated to begin building toward his season debut with the White Sox. It's unclear how many rehab appearances the organization wants Hendriks to make, but it's still very possible the 34-year-old closer returns before the end of May.
Apr 27 2023Hendriks (illness) will have a checkup in Chicago next week, with the hope he can be cleared to begin a rehab assignment soon, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: We're just a week removed from Hendriks announcing that he's cancer free following a final round of chemotherapy for non-Hodgkins's lymphoma. The White Sox have not placed Hendriks on the 60-day IL, leaving open the possibility that he could make his season debut before the end of May. He will certainly need ample rehab time before rejoining the big-league bullpen.
Apr 3 2023Hendriks (illness) revealed in a video on the White Sox' Twitter account that he's starting his last round of chemotherapy Monday to treat non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks concluded the video by saying he'd "see you guys on the South Side soon." A timetable for the closer's return is not yet clear, but the White Sox did not place him on the 60-day injured list, creating hope that he could be back before the end of May. Reynaldo Lopez has notched the team's lone save so far in the early going.
Mar 30 2023Hendriks was placed on the 15-day injured list by the White Sox on Thursday as he continues cancer treatment. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks' recovery is going very well, which is why he's being placed on the 15-day and not the 60-day IL. It remains possible that he'll need to move to the 60-day IL eventually, but the White Sox are keeping their options open.
Mar 29 2023White Sox general manager Rick Hahn announced Wednesday that Hendriks (illness) is responding well to treatment and won't be placed on the 60-day injured list to begin the season, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hahn cautions that there's still no timetable for Hendriks, though the White Sox's decision not to have him open the campaign on the 60-day IL suggests the team has hope he might be ready to make his debut before late May. The right-hander missed all of the Cactus League season while battling non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, but he has been able to work out at camp and throw bullpens. Once able to join the White Sox, Hendriks should return to the closing role he's excelled in the past few seasons.
Feb 18 2023Hendriks (illness) is working out with the White Sox at camp and threw a bullpen session Friday, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks' top priority for now remains his battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, but it's certainly encouraging to see him able to throw. The White Sox previously said they didn't expect to have an update on their closer's ability until Opening Day, however, and there's been no suggestion that Friday's bullpen session is part of a typical spring build-up.
Feb 15 2023White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said Wednesday that Hendriks (illness) will be around the team for spring training, but an update on any timeline for the pitcher's return to baseball activities won't come until at least Opening Day, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks revealed Jan. 8 that he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and while the 34-year-old is seemingly in good spirits since beginning treatment, his baseball career will be put on hold while he battles the disease. The White Sox haven't yet announced a replacement at closer while Hendriks is out, but Kendall Graveman -- who saved six games and notched 27 holds in 2022 -- seemingly represents the most logical fill-in option to begin the campaign.
Jan 8 2023Hendriks announced Sunday that he has been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks will begin treatment Monday and said in a statement he's "confident that I will make a full recovery and be back on the mound as soon as possible." It's obviously going to take time, though, with general manager Rick Hahn saying in his own statement that "we do not expect to have any updates on Liam's playing status prior to Opening Day at the very earliest." In much less important news, the White Sox will have an opening at closer while Hendriks is away. Kendall Graveman and perhaps Reynaldo Lopez loom as the most likely options to fill that void.
Oct 3 2022Hendriks picked up the save Monday against the Twins. He allowed no runs on one hit, one walk and one hit batsman while striking out three over one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With the White Sox up 3-2 in the ninth inning, Hendriks allowed a leadoff single to Gio Urshela and struck out the next two batters. However, he proceeded to hit a batter and allow a walk to load the bases before striking out Mark Contreras to end the game. Hendriks has allowed just one run in 11.2 innings dating back to the beginning of September with 18 strikeouts and is 8-for-8 in save opportunities.
Oct 2 2022Hendriks saved Sunday's 2-1 win against the Padres, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two in a scoreless ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It took 23 pitches, but Hendriks worked around a two-on two-out jam to convert his eighth straight save opportunity. The 33-year-old has struck out multiple batters in three consecutive outings and is up to 82 in 56.2 innings this season, with his 13 K/9 ranking 10th among relievers. Hendriks hasn't surrendered an earned run across his last 8.2 frames to drop his season ERA from 3.38 to 2.86.
Sep 30 2022Hendriks pitched a perfect inning and struck out two to earn the save in Friday's 3-1 win over the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks threw 10 of his 15 pitches for strikes and gave the Padres no hope of a comeback. He's pitched 7.2 innings without allowing an earned run across his last eight appearances, adding five saves and a 1-1 record in that span. For the season, the closer has a 2.91 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 80:14 K:BB through 55.2 innings while going 35-for-39 in save chances.
Sep 18 2022Hendriks (4-4) earned the win Saturday against Detroit, allowing no runs on no hits while striking out one and walking none over one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks was called upon in the 10th inning of a tied game and shut the Tigers down thanks to a fly ball, a ground ball and a strikeout. He needed 12 pitches to get through the frame and was credited with the win. This appearance comes off the heels of a loss, though Hendriks had four saves in four straight appearances prior to the loss. The veteran closer now possesses a 3.08 ERA.
Sep 16 2022Hendriks (3-4) allowed an unearned run and took a loss against the Tigers on Friday. He recorded two outs, including a strikeout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks entered a 2-2 game in the 10th inning and gave up the game-winning run after a pair of sacrifices. He was tagged with his first loss since July 23 but his ERA fell slightly to 3.14 through 52 appearances. Hendriks owns an impressive 74:13 K:BB while converting 33 of 37 save chances this season.
Sep 13 2022Hendriks pitched a perfect inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks threw just four of nine pitches for strikes, but he got Charlie Blackmon and Brendan Rodgers on groundouts before Randal Grichuk lined out to end the game. Hendriks has throw three straight scoreless innings to bounce back from a span in which he allowed five runs (four earned) over five innings in late August and early September. The 33-year-old closer is now 33-for-37 in save chances while sporting a 3.18 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 73:13 K:BB through 51 innings this year.
Sep 9 2022Hendriks saved Friday's 5-3 win against the Athletics, walking and striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks entered in the ninth inning to protect a two-run lead and issued a leadoff walk before inducing a strikeout and game-ending double play. Aside from a blown save Aug. 25, the 33-year-old has avoided a poor mark since July 23, allowing seven earned runs in 18.1 innings during the stretch. Hendrik's 32 save place one behind league-leader Kenley Jansen.
Sep 8 2022Hendriks picked up the save in Wednesday's 9-6 win over the Mariners and did not allow a baserunner while striking out three in the ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks has converted on 22 of his last 23 save opportunities over his last 34 appearances. However, the 33-year-old had stumbled in the five outings prior to this one, allowing four runs on seven hits, though that resulted in only one blown save. Overall this year, the right-hander is 31-for-35 in save chances with a 3.31 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 72:12 K:BB across 49 innings
Sep 5 2022Hendriks recorded a save against the Mariners on Monday, allowing one run on two hits and one walk while striking out two batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks entered with Chicago up by two runs in the ninth inning and didn't have an easy outing. He allowed two singles and a walk that resulted in one run, but the closer was able to strike out Adam Frazier with the winning run in scoring position. Hendriks is one of six major-league relievers to post 30 saves on the campaign so far.
Sep 2 2022Hendriks (3-3) earned the win Friday over the Twins, allowing one hit in a scoreless inning. He did not strike out or walk a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks was the beneficiary of the White Sox's rally in the bottom of the ninth inning. This was the first time in four appearances Hendriks didn't allow a run -- he surrendered four runs (three earned) over his last three innings entering Friday. Despite the shaky form lately, he's yet to be truly challenged for the closing gig. The 33-year-old owns a 3.26 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 67:11 K:BB while going 29-for-33 in save chances this year through 47 innings.
Aug 31 2022Hendriks allowed a run on two hits and struck out one in one inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks wasn't at his sharpest, but he got the job done despite allowing an RBI single to Michael Massey in the ninth inning. This was Hendriks' first appearance since his blown save Aug. 25 versus the Orioles, though that was mostly due to a lack of save opportunities, as the White Sox snapped a five-game losing streak Wednesday. The closer owns a 3.33 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 67:11 K:BB through 46 innings with 29 saves in 33 attempts.
Aug 26 2022Hendriks blew the save in Thursday's 4-3 extra-innings loss to the Orioles. He allowed one unearned run on one hit while striking out two over one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Adam Engel dropped a pop fly in foul territory that would have been the final out of the game, Hendriks gave up a solo homer to Kyle Stowers with two outs in the ninth inning to relinquish Chicago's one-run lead and force extras. The closer has allowed home runs in back-to-back appearances, and the blown save breaks a streak of converted saves on 19 consecutive opportunities for the 33-year-old, with his last blown save prior to Thursday coming May 14.
Aug 24 2022Hendriks allowed two earned runs on two hits and no walks while striking out two across one inning Wednesday against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The White Sox were likely looking to get Hendriks some work as he had pitched only 1.1 innings across the last seven days entering Wednesday's contest. As a result, he pitched in the ninth inning with a four-run lead and served up a two-run homer to the third batter he faced. Despite the stumble, Hendriks has held opponents scoreless in nine of his last 11 appearances. For the season Hendriks owns a 3.27 ERA and a 64:11 K:BB across 44 frames.
Aug 21 2022Hendriks picked up the save in Saturday's 2-0 win over the Guardians, allowing zero runs while striking out one over one-third of an inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks continues his dominance by recording his ninth straight save. The righty has surrendered just one run with 13 strikeouts over 9.1 innings in his last 10 outings. The 33-year-old has allowed more traffic on the bases at home with a 1.23 WHIP in 24.1 innings compared to a 0.80 WHIP in 18.2 innings away from Chicago.
Aug 16 2022Hendriks struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The White Sox pulled ahead in the eighth inning and Hendriks made the one-run lead stick. This was the eighth straight appearance in which he's picked up a save, and he's allowed just one run in eight inning in that span. Hendriks appears to be over his late-July struggles. The White Sox's closer has a 2.95 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 61:11 K:BB while converting 27 of 30 save chances in 42.2 innings this year.
Aug 15 2022Hendriks picked up the save Monday against the Astros. He allowed zero runs on one hit and one walk while striking out zero over one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Chicago closer allowed a walk and a hit to make things interesting in the ninth inning but emerged unscathed for his 26th save on the season. Hendriks has been hittable recently with a 5.40 ERA since July 23 coming into Monday, and he uncharacteristically did not record a strikeout for just the sixth time in 41 appearances this season. Despite the recent troubles, he still owns a 3.02 ERA and is 26-for-29 in save opportunities on the season.
Aug 14 2022Hendriks earned a save against Detroit on Saturday, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two batters in a scoreless inning of work. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks entered with Chicago up by two in the ninth inning. He allowed a single and a walk but struck out Riley Greene with the tying run on base to end the game. Hendriks hasn't blown a save since mid-May, racking up 16 straight successful conversions while posting a 2.13 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 37:5 K:BB over his past 25 appearances.
Aug 12 2022Hendriks allowed one hit and struck out one in a scoreless inning while earning a save over the Tigers on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran righty worked around a one-out single from Javier Baez to finish off the 2-0 victory. Hendriks had allowed six runs over his previous eight outings but he's now converted 15 consecutive save chances. He's sporting a 3.18 ERA with a 58:9 K:BB through 39 appearances.
Aug 9 2022Hendriks earned the save in Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader in Kansas City after giving up a run on one hit with one strikeout and zero walks during the ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander surrendered a leadoff single to Vinnie Pasquantino, who advanced to third base on a pair of wild pitches and scored on a sacrifice fly. It's the fourth time in eight outings since the All-Star break Hendriks has been scored upon, and he's allowed six earned runs with a 12:1 K:BB during that stretch. Overall he's 23-for-26 in save chances with a 3.26 ERA and 1.03 WHIP, so his positioning as Chicago's closer remains secure.
Aug 5 2022Hendriks struck out two batters in a perfect ninth inning and earned a save over the Rangers on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks threw eight of 10 pitches for strikes and had no issue rolling through the Rangers to finish off the 2-1 win. He's now converted 13 consecutive saves since blowing back-to-back chances in May. The veteran righty lowered his season ERA to 3.11 alongside a stellar 56:9 K:BB through 37.2 frames.
Aug 4 2022Hendriks picked up the save Wednesday against Kansas City, allowing no runs on no hits while striking out one and walking none over one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks was lights out Wednesday, needing 11 pitches to get three outs to close out the game. He earned his 21st save of the year, good for eighth most in baseball. The veteran righty saw his ERA spike to 3.48 in July after allowing a string of five runs across three innings, but Hendriks has pitched well lately with no runs allowed over his last three outings. His ERA now sits at 3.19.
Aug 1 2022Hendricks gave up one hit and no walks with two strikeouts over one scoreless inning to earn the save in a 4-3 win over the Athletics on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendricks' shut-down performance earned him his 20th save of the season. The 33-year-old right-hander has now strung together two scoreless appearances in a row after giving up runs in three straight. Hendricks' 20 saves ties him for ninth best in the majors and he will likely see whatever remaining save opportunities the White Sox can produce down the stretch.
Jul 30 2022Hendriks (2-3) earned the win during Saturday's 3-2 victory over the Athletics, allowing one hit while striking out two in a scoreless ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks entered a tie game in the top of the ninth and worked around a one-out Elvis Andrus double to catch the next two Athletics looking on strikeouts. It was a nice rebound for the All-Star closer, who had permitted a combined five runs across his previous three appearances. Hendriks possesses a 3.38 ERA and 1.10 WHIP with 51 strikeouts in 34.2 innings across 34 appearances.
Jul 26 2022Hendriks allowed a run on a hit and a walk while striking out one in one inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks gave up a leadoff home run to Ryan McMahon in the ninth inning, then settled down to escape the jam with his 19th save of the year. In three appearances since the All-Star break, Hendriks has yielded five runs and seven hits in three innings. The 33-year-old closer went into the break on a 15.1-inning scoreless streak, so his recent struggles are probably just a balancing of his previous performance. For the season, he has a 3.48 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 49:9 K:BB across 33.2 innings. He's not yet in danger of losing his grip on the closer job.
Jul 24 2022Hendriks (1-3) allowed three earned runs on four hits while striking out one to take the loss in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks entered in the ninth inning with the score knotted at 4-4. He immediately got into trouble, allowing hits to four of the first five hitters he faced to take his third loss of the season. Hendriks entered the game having held opponents scoreless in his last 15 appearances, maintaining a 22:3 K:BB span across 15.1 frames in that span. Despite Saturday's poor performance, Hendriks still has a 3.13 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 31.2 innings for the season.
Jul 14 2022Hendriks struck out two without allowing a baserunner in a scoreless ninth inning to earn his 18th save of the season Wednesday against the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks held a one-run lead in dominant fashion to tally his 18th save of the season. He's shown no lingering issues from a forearm injury that sidelined him for nearly a month, turning in four scoreless innings with a 7:0 K:BB since being activated from the injured list July 4. Overall, Hendriks has an excellent 2.43 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 44:8 K:BB across 29.2 frames for the campaign.
Jul 10 2022Hendriks earned a save with a perfect inning against Detroit on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks needed just nine pitches to quickly retired the Tigers in order and preserve the 4-2 lead. He's now thrown three perfect frames since returning from the injured list and Sunday was his first save since June 5. The 33-year-old righty lowered his season ERA to 2.51 with a 42:8 K:BB and 17 saves through 28.2 frames. Hendriks is riding a 13.1-inning scoreless streak dating back to May 16.
Jul 7 2022Hendriks did not allow a baserunner while striking out two in a clean ninth inning Wednesday against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks made his second appearance since being activated from the injured list July 4. He threw in the eighth inning in his initial outing but returned to the traditional closer role Wednesday to appear in the top of the ninth frame in a tied game. Hendriks hasn't shown any signs of rust, as he has yet to allow a baserunner while striking out five across two innings since his return.
Jul 4 2022Hendriks (forearm) struck out all three batters he faced in a perfect inning during Monday's 6-3 extra-inning loss to the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks worked the eighth inning, though it was arguably the highest-leverage spot in a tied game. He retired Carlos Correa, Max Kepler and Jorge Polanco on 14 pitches (nine strikes) in his first appearance since June 10. Hendriks has a 2.70 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 40:8 K:BB across 26.2 innings. Kendall Graveman and Joe Kelly were fairly effective in his absence, but Hendriks should have no problem reclaiming closing duties quickly after his three-and-a-half-week absence.
Jul 1 2022Hendriks (forearm) said Friday that he'd be activated off the injured list Monday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks hasn't pitched in three weeks due to a forearm issue. He threw a bullpen Friday which he said felt completely normal, but while he believes he could be activated already, the team will give him a few more days. He should immediately reclaim the closer role upon his return.
Jun 28 2022Hendriks (forearm) is scheduled to throw a simulated game Friday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks felt good after a bullpen session Monday and will now progress to facing live hitters for the first time since landing on the injured list two weeks ago. Manager Tony La Russa hopes the right-hander will be able to be activated during the White Sox's upcoming homestand, which begins Monday against the Twins. In the meantime, Kendall Graveman should continue to fill in as Chicago's closer.
Jun 23 2022Hendriks (forearm) began throwing this week and is recovering well, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After throwing from 60 feet Monday, Hendriks was quoted as saying, "Everything is exactly where we are expecting it to be. Now the challenge on my behalf tends to convince them that I can come back quicker than they are trying to let me." Hendriks is targeting July 1 for his return from the 15-day injured list. In the meantime, Kendall Graveman and Joe Kelly will mix in for save chances, with Kelly recently tallying the first Chicago save in Hendriks' absence.
Jun 19 2022Hendriks (forearm) is set to begin a throwing program Monday and is targeting July 1 for his return from the 15-day injured list, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks will end up being shut down from throwing for less than a week after landing on the IL on June 14, but the White Sox won't have a clear sense if he'll be able to avoid a long-term absence until he steps back on a mound. He'll likely spend the next few days stretching out his throwing distance off flat ground before potentially graduating to throwing a bullpen session by next weekend or early next week. In the meantime, Kendall Graveman is expected to continue serving as the White Sox's primary closer while Hendriks is ramping up.
Jun 14 2022Hendriks (forearm) has been given a preliminary timeline of three weeks, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks hasn't pitched since Friday, but while his placement on the injured list can be backdated, he'll need a bit more than a minimum-length absence as he recovers from a forearm strain. The given timeline would see him return sometime in the early part of July. Kendall Graveman appears to be the best choice to replace him in the ninth inning, though he's pitched in two straight games, so any save chance Tuesday would likely to go Joe Kelly instead.
Jun 13 2022Hendriks is dealing with arm stiffness ahead of Monday's game against the Tigers, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks wasn't available out of the bullpen for Sunday's series finale against the Rangers, but he'll play catch prior to Monday's matchup. Manager Tony La Russa isn't yet sure whether the right-hander will be available against the Tigers on Monday but didn't sound too concerned about Hendriks' long-term availability.
Jun 5 2022Hendriks earned the save, striking out one in the ninth inning of a 6-5 win Sunday in Tampa Bay. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks needed only nine pitches to retire the bottom three batters in the Tampa Bay lineup in order. After blowing consecutive save opportunities in mid-May, the veteran has converted seven straight save chances. He's held opponents scoreless over his last eight outings, striking out 13 and allowing only four hits and two walks in 8.1 innings.
May 25 2022Hendriks earned the save after he pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, walking two batters while striking out one in Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks entered the game with two outs in the eighth frame after Joe Kelly was forced to exit with left hamstring tightness, getting Christian Vazquez to ground out to end the inning. He then returned in the ninth inning, working around two walks to grab his 14th save of the season. Hendriks has now worked 5.1 scoreless frames since blowing back-to-back saves earlier in May, allowing three hits and walking two while striking out eight and going 5-for-5 on save opportunities.
May 22 2022Hendriks saved a 3-1 victory in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Yankees, striking out two in a scoreless ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Chicago took the lead in the top of the ninth, Hendriks was brought in to close out the victory and sat down all three Yankees on 17 pitches. Following consecutive blown saves earlier this month, the 33-year-old has converted four straight opportunities and lowered his ERA nearly a full run to 3.72.
May 19 2022Hendriks allowed two hits and struck out one across a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Thursday against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks was tasked with protecting a three-run lead, but he made things interesting by allowing two of the first three batters he faced to reach base. However, he ultimately escaped the jam to tally his 12th save of the campaign. Hendriks has turned in three consecutive scoreless appearances and has a 3.93 ERA with a 28:5 K:BB across 18.1 frames for the season.
May 18 2022Hendriks recorded his 11th save of the season during the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Royals, giving up a hit and striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander completed a combined shutout by White Sox pitchers after Dylan Cease had kicked things off with 5.2 scoreless frames. Hendriks has had a bumpy start to the season, with his 4.15 ERA and 1.33 WHIP being his worst marks since 2018, but he still sports a 35.5 percent strikeout rate through 17.1 innings and sits fourth in the majors in saves.
May 16 2022Hendriks struck out all three batters he faced and earned a save over the Royals on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks needed just 12 pitches in a perfect 10th inning to secure the 5-3 win Monday. He blew his last two save chances after converting the previous nine. The veteran righty lowered his ERA to 4.41 with 10 saves and 26 punchouts through 16.1 innings.
May 14 2022Hendriks (1-2) was credited with the win after blowing a save Saturday against the Yankees. He allowed one run one on one hit and one walk while striking out three over 1.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The closer was put in a tough situation in the eighth inning, entering with one out and a pair of runners on base with Chicago clinging to a one-run lead. He got out of the jam by striking out Josh Donaldson and Gleyber Torres, but the Yankees got to him for a run in the following frame to tie the score. The White Sox then walked off with a win the bottom of the ninth, handing Hendriks his first win of the campaign. Despite the favorable finish, it wasn't the best outing for Hendriks, who has blown two straight save chances while yielding three earned runs over his past two innings.
May 9 2022Hendriks allowed two on runs two hits in Monday's loss to the Guardians. He recorded one out and was charged with a blown save. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The White Sox entered the ninth inning with an 8-2 lead but Hendriks was called in after Tanner Banks struggled. The veteran righty proceeded to serve up a grand slam to Josh Naylor to send the game to extra innings. His ERA jumped to 4.61 through 13.2 innings after blowing a save for the first time since his season debut.
May 8 2022Hendriks did not allow a baserunner across a scoreless 10th inning to earn the save Saturday against Boston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks needed only eight pitches to retire Rafael Devers, Xander Bogaerts and J.D. Martinez to pick up his ninth save of the season. Hendriks has turned in six consecutive scoreless appearances, racking up an 8:2 K:BB in that span. He's overcome a shaky start to the campaign and worked around a back injury to cement himself as one of the elite closers once again.
May 6 2022Hendriks struck out three and walked one in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to pick up the save against the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He was tasked with protecting a two-run lead, and apart from walking Christian Vazquez, he was perfect, striking out Franchy Cordero, Jackie Bradley and Jarren Duran to pick up his eighth save of the season. Hendriks wasn't stellar out of the gates this season, but he now has five straight scoreless appearances under his belt and four saves over that stretch.
May 4 2022Hendriks earned the save against the Cubs on Wednesday by pitching a perfect ninth inning during which he struck out one batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander pitched (and notched a save) each of the previous two days, but he threw only 22 combined pitches in those outings and was therefore able to appear in a third consecutive contest Wednesday. He needed only 10 pitches this time around to earn another save, giving him seven on the season. The White Sox have an off day Thursday, so there will be no intrigue about whether Hendriks could be deployed for a fourth straight game.
May 3 2022Hendriks earned the save, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning in a 3-1 win Tuesday over the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks did not allow a ball out of the infield and retired the Cubs in order with only 10 pitches. While the closer doesn't necessarily have impressive numbers over the first month of the season, he has converted six consecutive save opportunities. Consistency has been an issue as he's allowed no hits five times and two or more hits five times in his first 10 appearances. He's averaging better than 13 punchouts per nine innings for the fourth straight season, one of the main reasons why he's been able to pitch around trouble.
May 2 2022Hendriks earned the save Monday after pitching a perfect ninth inning, striking out three in the 3-0 win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks snagged his first save since April 16 in a dominant fashion, retiring all three batters he faced via the punchout. The right-hander now has five saves on the season in six opportunities and he owns a 4.82 ERA and 1.82 WHIP with 15 strikeouts over 9.1 innings. After pitching back-to-back days without giving up so much as a hit, it appears Hendriks may be behind the back injury that shelved him for several days.
Apr 30 2022Hendriks (back) tossed a scoreless ninth inning in Saturday's 4-0 victory over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks did not enter in a save situation, but with the White Sox only up four runs and Hendriks not having pitched since Apr. 24, he got the call and sealed the deal. Hendriks was a bit rusty, throwing only 11 of his 20 pitches for strikes, but consider him good to go moving forward.
Apr 26 2022Hendriks is considered day-to-day due to back spasms but hasn't been ruled out from appearing in Tuesday's game against the Royals, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks reportedly slipped in the dugout between the ninth and 10th innings Sunday against the Twins, shortly before allowing a walkoff homer to Byron Buxton. The issue doesn't appear to be serious, however, as it looks as though he'll return to action within a few days if not right away. If he doesn't wind up being cleared to pitch Tuesday, Kendall Graveman or Aaron Bummer could receive a save opportunity.
Apr 24 2022Hendriks is dealing with back tightness following Sunday's loss to Minnesota, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks took the loss Sunday when he allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk while striking out one in 1.1 innings. Manager Tony La Russa downplayed the severity of the issue and indicated Hendriks said during the outing that he was fine. However, he'll receive treatment following Sunday's series finale and will have a day to rest ahead of Tuesday's matchup against the Royals.
Apr 17 2022Hendriks allowed two hits and a walk while striking out one across a scoreless ninth inning to pick up the save Saturday against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The inning wasn't quite as nerve wracking as the line would suggest, as the walk Hendriks surrendered was intentional. However, he did allow a leadoff single and another base knock two batters later. Though Hendriks has successfully converted four of his five save chances this season, he's allowed multiple hitters to reach base in all but one appearance. Positively, he still gets strikeouts when needed, as he's racked up nine strikeouts as opposed to one walk across his five frames.
Apr 15 2022Hendriks struck out one batter in a scoreless ninth inning and earned a save over the Rays on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks quickly retired the Rays in order in the ninth, needing just 11 pitches to secure his third save of the year. It was his first scoreless appearance of the season after coughing up four runs (three earns) in his first three outings. The White Sox clearly still have full confidence in Hendriks as he's earned three saves in the last four days.
Apr 14 2022Hendriks picked up the save Wednesday against the Mariners after giving up one run on two hits during the ninth inning. He struck out two and didn't record a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For the second straight night, Hendricks came on with a multiple-run lead in the ninth and was able to lock down the victory despite allowing a run. The 33-year-old is off to a rocky start, as he's allowed multiple hits and given up at least one run in each of his first three outings, including a blown save during an Opening Day loss to the Tigers. Regardless, Hendriks still has plenty of job security after recording 38 saves and a 2.54 ERA for the White Sox last year, especially with Craig Kimbrel already shipped off to the Dodgers.
Apr 12 2022Hendriks picked up the save Tuesday against the Mariners after giving up one run on three hits during the ninth inning. He had three strikeouts and zero walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 33-year-old entered with a 3-1 lead and needed 25 pitches to get through the frame, but Seattle only managed one run since all three hits allowed were singles. Hendriks is off to a rough start this season, as he picked up a loss and blown save Opening Day after surrendering two runs to Detroit. Still, Hendriks has plenty of job security after recording 38 saves with a 2.54 ERA for the White Sox last year, especially with Craig Kimbrel already shipped off to the Dodgers.
Apr 8 2022Hendriks (0-1) allowed two runs on four hits and no walks while striking out two in one inning to take the loss in Friday's matchup against Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks entered Friday's game with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning and remained in the matchup with a one-run lead in the ninth, but he was unable to pick up the save in his 2022 debut. The right-hander allowed a solo home run with one out before giving up a triple and a single to end the game. The 33-year-old's appearance isn't what fantasy managers are accustomed to after Hendriks converted 38 of 44 save chances last year. However, the right-hander remains among the best closers in baseball and has plenty of job security in 2022 after the White Sox traded Craig Kimbrel to the Dodgers.
Oct 3 2021Hendriks pitched a perfect ninth inning during which he struck out two batters to register the save against the Tigers on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander needed only nine pitches (eight of which were strikes) to retire the side in order and close out the one-run victory. Hendriks has successfully converted each of his past 12 save chances and has posted a 1.27 ERA, 0.61 WHIP and 31:1 K:BB across 21.1 innings since his last blown save Aug. 12. He is tied for second in the majors with 38 saves on the season.
Sep 27 2021Hendriks pitched a scoreless ninth inning on his way to a save Monday against the Tigers. He allowed one hit and struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks gave up a single to Jeimer Candelario to open the inning before settling down and retiring the next three batters in order. The save was his 37th of the season and the 32-year-old has now converted 11 straight save opportunities. Hendriks has put together 13 straight scoreless appearances, walking none with an 11.9 K/9 in 13.2 innings.
Sep 26 2021Hendriks allowed a hit in a scoreless ninth inning and earned a save over Cleveland on Sunday. He struck out one batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks worked around a two-out single by Myles Straw to finish off the 5-2 win. He extended his scoreless streak to 12.2 innings with a 16:0 K:BB during that span. Hendriks is now 36-for-42 in save chances with a 2.65 ERA.
Sep 25 2021Hendriks struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Friday to record his 35th save of the season in a 1-0 win over Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The White Sox bullpen was taxed a little more heavily than expected in the combined shutout after Dylan Cease (triceps) was forced to exit early, but Hendriks was more than up to the task of finishing the job. The 32-year-old hasn't blown a save since Aug. 12, converting nine straight chances with a 1.56 ERA, 0.63 WHIP and 23:1 K:BB through 17.1 innings over his last 16 appearances.
Sep 22 2021Hendriks struck out two over a scoreless ninth inning in Tuesday's 5-3 loss to the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks had not pitched in five days and needed the work, which explains why he would be pitching in a non-save situation. A save opportunity has not presented itself since Sept. 10, leaving Hendriks to make three consecutive outings with the game not on the line.
Sep 12 2021Hendriks fired a scoreless ninth inning Saturday but appeared to be experiencing discomfort, Brian Sandalow of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: White Sox manager Tony La Russa said pitching coach Ethan Katz thought he noticed something and asked the pitcher about it. Hendriks confirmed that he is fine.
Sep 10 2021Hendriks allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth inning and earned a save over Boston on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks worked around a leadoff single by Christian Vazquez to secure the 4-3 win for the White Sox. Dating back to Aug. 16, he's converted his last eight save chances while allowing just one run through 12 innings during that span. The veteran righty is now 34-for-40 in save chances with a 2.90 ERA on the year.
Sep 8 2021Hendriks picked up the save Tuesday against the Athletics after tossing a scoreless inning, striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks has nailed each of his last seven save chances and has racked up 33 saves on the year -- he paces the American League in that category and ranks second in all of baseball behind Mark Melancon, who has 36. Hendriks has also hurled five straight scoreless outings and owns an elite 0.82 ERA over his last nine appearances.
Sep 5 2021Hendriks pitched a perfect inning against the Royals on Saturday, striking out one to earn the save. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The White Sox closer threw eight of 11 pitches for strikes in setting the side down in order. Hendriks has successfully converted six straight save opportunities since Aug. 16, holding opponents to a single run while posting a 13:1 K:BB across 10 innings over that span. He appears to be back on track after a rough two-game stretch in mid-August during which he gave up six earned runs across 1.1 frames.
Sep 1 2021Hendriks was called upon to get the final five outs in Wednesday's victory over the Pirates, allowing no runs on one hit while registering two strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The closer has now collected a save in consecutive nights and his season total is up to 31. It was his third five-out save in his last six appearances as he has proven to be very versatile at the back end of the White Sox bullpen. In his last seven outings he has a 1.00 ERA and 0.67 WHIP with 12 strikeouts over nine innings pitched.
Aug 31 2021Hendriks picked up the save Tuesday pitching one inning while giving up one hit to the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 32-year-old gave up a single to Kevin Newman with one out, but induced a game-ending double play by Hoy Park the next batter he faced. The save marked his 30th of the season which is second only to Mark Melancon's 35. After back-to-back difficult outings against the Yankees earlier this month where he surrendered 6 total runs, he has rebounded nicely and has only given up one run over his last six appearances.
Aug 26 2021Hendriks was not available to pitch Wednesday and may not be ready to pitch in Thursday's series finale against Toronto, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: White Sox manager Tony La Russa said Hendriks was not available Wednesday, after the closer threw 39 pitches for the final five outs in Tuesday's win. La Russa added it's possible he won't be ready for Thursday's afternoon game. Craig Kimbrel is ready to pitch the ninth inning should a save situation arise.
Aug 25 2021Hendriks collected his 29th save of the season in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Blue Jays. He worked 1.2 innings and gave up one run on three hits and a walk while striking out a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With one out and two runners on base and the White Sox holding a four-run lead, Hendriks was summoned from the bullpen to put out the fire. After walking Marcus Semien to load the bases, Hendriks induced a grounder from Vladimir Guerrero for an inning-ending double play. Hendriks would go on to let a run during the bottom of the ninth, but his good work from an inning earlier was enough for him to scoop up the save. Hendriks now trails only the Padres' Mark Melancon (34) for the MLB lead in the category.
Aug 21 2021Hendriks (8-3) struck out one over a perfect 10th inning to earn the win over the Rays in 11 innings on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks was prepping for a save opportunity before Tampa Bay plated three in the bottom of the eighth inning, changing manager Tony La Russa's deployment of relievers. After Chicago tied the game in the top of the ninth, Garrett Crochet got the game into extra frames where Hendriks and Ryan Tepera took over. For Hendriks, it was a third straight scoreless and hitless outing following a two-game hiccup against the Yankees last week.
Aug 19 2021Hendriks struck out three over 1.2 scoreless and hitless innings to pick up the save in Wednesday's 3-2 win over Oakland. The save was his 28th of the season. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a rough two-game stretch against the Yankees last week, Hendriks closed the door on the Athletics for the second straight appearance. The closer told Scott Merkin of MLB.com that, through the unlikely help of his wife, he noticed he was tipping pitches. Following his wife's suggestion, Hendriks studied video and noticed a tell, which led to an adjustment. He's struck out six without giving up a hit over 2.2 innings since.
Aug 17 2021Hendricks struck out the side in the ninth inning to record the save in Monday's 5-2 win over the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendricks, who had allowed three home runs in his last two ninth-inning appearances, had no issues dispatching Oakland batters Monday. He was the third in a line of dominant relief performances, following Michael Kopech (two innings, three strikeouts) and Craig Kimbrel (one inning, three strikeouts). The save was Hendriks' 27th and allays concerns that built up over the previous two outings.
Aug 14 2021Hendriks (7-3) was tagged with the loss Saturday against the Yankees, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits in one-third of an inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks entered a 4-4 game in the 10th inning and immediately gave up an RBI single to Aaron Judge and a two-run home run to Joey Gallo. The latter was the 11th homer allowed by Hendriks this season and the third in his last two outings. The veteran reliever has been torched for seven runs (six earned) in his two appearances in the series with the Yankees, upping his season ERA from 2.40 to 3.42.
Aug 12 2021Hendriks (7-2) earned the win after blowing a save Thursday against the Yankees, giving up four runs on three hits and a walk in one inning. He also had three strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks was knocked around by the middle of the New York lineup in the top of the ninth inning, with two-run blasts by Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton turning a 7-4 Chicago lead into an 8-7 deficit. Fortunately for Hendriks, Tim Anderson responded with a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the frame, securing the right-hander's seventh relief win of the season. The longball has been an issue all year for Hendriks, who has now allowed 10 of them in 49.2 innings, his most since becoming a full-time reliever in 2015. He has blown six of his 32 save opportunities while logging a 3.08 ERA and 0.79 WHIP.
Aug 6 2021Hendriks (6-2) allowed one hit and no walks while striking out four in 1.1 scoreless innings to earn the win over the Cubs on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks entered Friday's game with two outs in the eighth inning after Craig Kimbrel gave up a game-tying home run, and the 32-year-old struck out four of the five batters he faced. Hendriks was charged with a blown save July 28, but he's earned two wins and a save by tossing 3.1 scoreless frames across his last three outings.
Aug 1 2021Hendriks (5-2) allowed a hit and struck out two batters in a scoreless ninth inning Sunday, earning a victory over Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks came into a tied game and worked around a two-out single by Franmil Reyes to hold the game at 1-1. He picked up the win after Brian Goodwin's walkoff homer the next half-inning. The 32-year-old righty is 5-2 with 26 saves and a 2.47 ERA through 47.1 innings.
Jul 30 2021Hendriks struck out two batters in a perfect ninth inning Friday, earning a save over Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks was his usual dominant self Friday, recording two strikeouts and preserving the 6-4 lead while needing only 16 pitches (11 strikes). The 32-year-old righty is sporting a 2.53 ERA and he's converted 26 of his 31 save opportunities. It's unclear how he and Craig Kimbrel will split save chances moving forward, but Hendriks will still be worth rostering in most fantasy formats, largely due to his insane 73:5 K:BB through 46.1 frames.
Jul 29 2021Hendriks was tagged with a blown save against the Royals on Wednesday as a result of giving up one run on a solo homer over one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran reliever retired the first batter he faced after being called upon to close out the contest, but Salvador Perez then took him deep to left field to tie the game. The blown save was Hendriks' fifth of the season and first since July 11. He still carries a strong 2.58 ERA and an absurd 71:5 K:BB overall.
Jul 27 2021Hendriks struck out one and did not allow a baserunner in a scoreless inning to earn the save Tuesday against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks was handed a two-run lead, and he needed only 14 pitches to tally his 25th save of the season. After allowing five earned runs across an eight-inning span in seven appearances from June 26 to July 11, Hendriks has now turned in four consecutive scoreless outings. Overall, he has a 2.44 ERA with 71 strikeouts across 44.1 frames.
Jul 26 2021Hendriks allowed one hit and struck out three to save Sunday's 3-1 win over Milwaukee. It was his 24th save in 28 chances. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Michael Kopech hurled a scoreless seventh but walked the first batter faced in the eighth, so manager Tony La Russa went with his closer for a six-out save, the second save of such length this season for Hendriks. He hadn't pitched since last Tuesday, so Hendriks had the bullets and retired the Brewers on just 20 pitches over his two innings.
Jul 11 2021Hendriks (4-2) earned the win in relief Sunday against the Orioles after allowing two runs on two hits across one inning, striking out three. He was also credited with a blown save. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was far from Hendriks' best outing, as he entered the ninth inning with a 4-2 lead and couldn't hold on to get the save. Instead, the White Sox scored three runs in the top of the 10th and that offensive explosion ended up giving Hendriks his fourth win of the campaign. The closer blew a save for the first time since June 11 and has gone 23-for-26 in save chances this season. Even after this poor outing, his role as the White Sox's late-inning guy moving forward shouldn't be in jeopardy by any means.
Jul 7 2021Hendriks struck out four over two scoreless innings to pick up the save in Tuesday's 4-3 win over Minnesota. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks struck out the first four batters faced before getting help from center fielder Billy Hamilton, who made a diving, sliding catch off a ball hit by Max Kepler. It was Hendricks' 22nd save and fourth when he pitched more than one inning. The closer had not pitched since July 1, so he had the bullets to go two frames.
Jun 30 2021Hendriks gave up a run while walking one and striking out one in the ninth inning Tuesday to record his 21st save of the season in a 7-6 win over the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander wasn't at his sharpest, tossing only 12 of 23 pitches for strikes as he issued his first free pass since May 23, but he had just enough cushion to get the job done. Hendriks remains the AL leader in saves, sitting three ahead of Matt Barnes, and he'll take a 2.38 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and dazzling 52:4 K:BB through 34 innings into his next appearance.
Jun 27 2021Hendricks recorded the final two outs to earn a save over the White Sox in Sunday's Game 2 victory. He struck out one batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendricks was tagged with a loss in the first game but bounced back immediately to pick up a save in the second contest. He's now 20-for-23 in save chances with a 2.18 ERA through 32 innings this season. He's converted 16 of his last 17 chances and owns a 1.19 ERA since the start of May.
Jun 23 2021Hendriks pitched a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout, earning the save in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Having held opponents scoreless in 22 of his last 23 appearances, Hendriks remains one of baseball's elite closers, and receives plenty of opportunities on a winning White Sox club. His 19 saves trail only Marc Melancon (22) and Craig Kimbrel (20). And, with just three walks on the season, Hendriks has managed a fantastic 0.79 WHIP.
Jun 15 2021Hendriks allowed two hits and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Tuesday against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks was tasked with protecting a 3-0 lead. He allowed the tying run to come the plate after allowing back-to-back singles, but he ultimately struck out the final two batters he faced to earn his 18th save. In addition, Hendriks has put together stellar ratios, maintaining a 2.15 ERA while recording 46 strikeouts across 29.1 innings.
Jun 14 2021Hendriks struck out one over a perfect ninth inning to earn the save in Sunday's 4-1 win over the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks got back on the save train after blowing an opportunity Thursday, registering his 17th. Aside from Thursday's kerfuffle, in which he allowed two runs in an inning, Hendriks has not allowed an earned run in 20 of his last 21 appearances.
Jun 12 2021Hendriks (3-1) allowed two runs on two hits and struck out one over one inning, picking up the win in a 5-4 extra-inning win over Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks first attempted to close out the game amid a pouring rain, but the umpires halted the game after his first pitch. After a 49-miniute delay, Hendriks gave up a single to Miguel Cabrera then a game-tying, two-run home run to Daz Cameron. The runs put an end to the reliever's 14-game scoreless streak, and the blown save was his first since April 24. The White Sox went on to score a run in the 10th, giving Hendriks the win and setting up the save for Aaron Bummer.
Jun 10 2021Hendriks notched his 16th save of the season Thursday against the Blue Jays after posting a scoreless ninth inning, giving up one hit and striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks had the task of closing things out with a three-run lead and while he allowed a one-out single to Joe Panik, the right-hander shut the door on a potential comeback after fanning Rowdy Tellez and Santiago Espinal on a back-to-back basis. Hendriks hasn't allowed an earned run since late April and has tossed 14 straight scoreless outings, as he's proven once again why he's one of the game's best late-inning relievers. He owns a stellar 1.71 ERA across 26.1 innings in 2021.
Jun 6 2021Hendriks struck out two batters in a perfect ninth inning to earn a save over Detroit on Sunday. Jun 5 2021Hendriks (2-1) faced just one batter Friday and got him out as he took the win over the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks entered with two runners on and two outs in the ninth and got Niko Goodrum to fly out to end the inning. The White Sox ended up rallying with a run in the ninth to walk it off, awarding Hendriks the win. The 32-year-old is making good the $54 million contract he signed in the offseason, as he owns a 1.93 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 38:3 K:BB over 23.1 innings and is third in baseball with 14 saves.
Jun 3 2021Hendriks did not allow a baserunner and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning to record the save Thursday against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks was tasked with protecting a three-run lead and had no issue doing so to earn his 14th save of the season. Since a somewhat rocky start to the campaign, Hendriks has now turned in 15 consecutive scoreless appearances. Overall, he's maintained a 1.96 ERA with a 38:3 K:BB and is among the elite closers in the league.
May 30 2021Hendriks pitched a perfect inning to earn the save in Sunday's 3-1 win over Baltimore. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 32-year-old completed a rare feat Saturday with saves in both halves of a doubleheader, and he was able to close out another game Sunday. Hendriks is up to 13-for-15 in save chances this year with a strong 2.05 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 36:3 K:BB across 22 innings. With heavy usage over the weekend, Aaron Bummer or Garrett Crochet (hold Sunday) could get a look for a save opportunity instead of Hendriks in Monday's doubleheader versus Cleveland.
May 29 2021Hendriks earned the save while striking out the side in the seventh inning in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After recording the save in Game 1, Hendriks repeated the effort in game 2 to earn two saves in one day. The 32-year-old struck out five of the six batters he faced between the two games. He has a 2.14 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP in 21 innings. He boasts a 15.4 K/9.
May 25 2021Hendriks did not allow a baserunner in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Tuesday against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It didn't appear as if Hendriks would be called upon, as the White Sox opened up the ninth frame with a five-run lead. However, Garrett Crochet allowed each of the first three batters he faced to reach base, which caused Hendriks to be summoned from the bullpen. He proceeded to strike out all three of the batters he faced to earn his 10th save this season. Hendriks has been dominant in 19 innings, maintaining a 2.38 ERA with a 31:3 K:BB.
May 24 2021Hendriks walked the only batter faced in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks was asked to quell New York's threat in the bottom of the ninth inning of a tied game. May 14 2021Hendriks gave up a hit in a scoreless seventh inning Friday during the second game of a doubleheader against the Royals to record his eighth save of the season. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Called on to protect a 3-1 lead, Hendriks gave up a bunt single to Jarrod Dyson with one out but otherwise had things well in hand. The right-hander has converted eight of his first 10 save chances with the White Sox while posting a 2.76 ERA and stellar 26:1 K:BB through 16.1 innings.
May 7 2021Hendriks allowed two hits and struck out two batters over a scoreless ninth inning to earn a save over Kansas City on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks coughed up a leadoff double to Salvador Perez and eventually found himself in a bases-loaded jam with two outs. May 6 2021Hendriks (1-1) was tagged with the loss Wednesday after allowing an unearned run on two hits over a third of an inning against the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks entered in a non-save situation, as the game was tied with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth. He rescued the White Sox from that jam but gave up two hits to open the 10th, giving Cincinnati a walkoff win.
Apr 29 2021Hendriks earned the save Thursday after tossing a perfect inning that included one strikeout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Tasked with protecting a two-run lead in the seventh inning of Thursday's twin bill, Hendriks sent Jonathan Schoop down on strikes before forcing Niko Goodrum to pop out and Wilson Ramos to ground out. The right-hander needed just 12 pitches to get the job done, nine of which were strikes. The flawless frame lowered his ERA to 4.35 and WHIP to 0.66 to go with five saves across 10.1 innings of work this season.
Apr 24 2021Hendriks (1-0) blew the save but still got the win Saturday against the Rangers. He allowed one run on one hit while fanning two across his lone inning of work. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks entered the game with a 1-0 lead in the ninth but blew the save when Willie Calhoun took him deep with one out. However, the White Sox got the win in the bottom of the ninth following an RBI double from Nick Madrigal that scored Luis Robert -- meaning Hendriks still qualified for the win. The veteran is now 4-for-6 in save opportunities this season but his role as Chicago's closer is not in doubt at the moment.
Apr 20 2021Hendriks retired the lone batter he faced to earn the save during Tuesday's 8-5 win over Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The White Sox entered the ninth inning with a five-run lead, but Hendriks was needed to close things out after Cleveland scratched across two runs. Apr 18 2021Hendriks worked around one hit and struck out one to pick up the save in Sunday's 3-2 win over Boston in the first game of a doubleheader. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendrick allowed a two-out single to Christian Arroyo but had little stress beyond that for this second save of the season and first since April 2. He needed only 16 pitches and should be available to throw in the nightcap if needed.
Apr 11 2021Hendriks allowed a run on two hits and struck out two in one inning, taking a blown save in Sunday's extra-inning loss versus the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks gave up a game-tying solo shot to Carlos Santana in the ninth inning. It was the second homer allowed in 3.1 innings for Hendriks, who allowed only a single long ball in 25.1 innings last season. He's off to a rough start as the White Sox closer, with three earns runs allowed on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts in three outings. He is 1-for-2 in save chances so far.
Apr 3 2021Hendriks picked up a multi-inning save Friday, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out two over 1.1 innings in a win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The White Sox were up, 7-6, and the Angels had two on and two out in the eighth when Hendriks entered to get the final out. Chicago then plated five in the ninth in what was looking like an an uneventful save, particularly when Hendriks retired the first two batters in the ninth, but Shohei Ohtani took him deep for a two-run home run. Sometimes, an elite closer can lose his edge when having the cushion of a big lead.
Mar 27 2021Hendriks struck out all three batters faced in a perfect inning Friday against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks pitched for the first time in nine days after passing a kidney stone. The ordeal did not seem to affect him, as he fanned all three batters faced and pulled it off with what he referred to as a "natural hat trick -- strikeouts with the fastball, slider and curveball," per Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times. He'll next pitch Sunday, which Hendriks said will have him ready for the regular season.
Mar 26 2021Hendriks will pitch for the first time in nine days Friday against the Brewers after dealing with kidney stones, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The medical scare threw off Hendriks' preseason preparation, but he should still be ready to go by Opening Day. His delayed buildup may mean the White Sox avoid using him on back-to-back days at the start of the regular season but shouldn't significantly impact his campaign.
Mar 24 2021White Sox manager Tony LaRussa said Wednesday that Hendriks has been dealing with kidney stones this spring and has been limited to three Cactus League appearances as a result, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: LaRussa doesn't seem overly worried about Hendriks' medical situation, and the fact that the White Sox haven't shut him down from throwing adds credence to the team's belief that he'll be ready to go for Opening Day. Hendriks was able to complete a bullpen session of 25-to-30 pitches Wednesday and is tentatively scheduled to pitch in a game this weekend. Assuming he's able to do that, Hendriks is poised to open the season as the closer for what looks to be one of baseball's top teams, at least on paper.
Mar 17 2021Hendriks struck out one over a scoreless inning in Wednesday's spring game against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks dispatched the Dodgers in a perfect inning while making his third Cactus League appearance. He's allowed one run on one hit while striking out four with a walk over three innings. All systems are go for Chicago's closer.
Feb 19 2021Hendriks threw his first bullpen session Thursday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks got comfortable with catcher Yasmani Grandal, who told the pitcher that he was tipping pitches in an at-bat that resulted in the catcher hitting a home run off Hendriks during Game 2 of last year's playoff series between Oakland and Chicago. "So that's fun," said Hendriks with a broad smile. "It's pretty much the most productive home run I've given up, so there's that." Hendriks said he wasn't taking it for granted that he would be the White Sox's closer, but it's almost certain he will work the ninth inning when available.
Jan 11 2021Hendriks signed a three-year, $54 million contract with Chicago on Monday night, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks earned the American League Reliever of the Year award following an impressive 2020 campaign, securing 14 saves while posting a 1.78 ERA and 0.67 WHIP with a 37:3 K:BB across 25.1 innings. He'll join an already deep bullpen, likely leaving Aaron Bummer and Matt Foster to work in a setup role.
Oct 24 2020Hendriks has been named the 2020 American League Reliever of the Year, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks dominated in the shortnered campaign, maintaining a 1.78 ERA and 0.67 WHIP across 25.1 innings. He also racked up 14 saves, good for second in the league behind Brad Hand. Hendriks has proven to be one of the elite relievers in the league across the past two seasons by racking up saves while also recording elite ratios and strikeouts.
Oct 7 2020Hendriks came into the game in the seventh inning and recorded three scoreless innings of work while allowing only one hit and striking out four in Wednesday's win over the Astros in Game 3 of the ALDS. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks earned the win and threw 26 of his 33 pitches for strikes. The 31-year-old recorded 14 saves during the regular season all while recording a 1.78 ERA and 0.67 WHIP. His impressive performance could not have come at a better time for an Oakland team on the verge of elimination.
Oct 2 2020Hendriks allowed one hit and struck out three without walking a batter in a scoreless ninth inning Thursday to convert the save during a Game 3 win over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 31-year-old labored during Game 2 and needed 49 pitches to record five outs while surrendering two runs, yet he still managed to come back a day later to secure the series-clinching win for Oakland. Hendriks clearly remains manager Bob Melvin's most trusted bullpen arm after posting a 1.78 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and 37:3 K:BB over 25.1 innings this season.
Oct 1 2020Hendriks gave up two earned runs on four hits and one walk while striking out five in 1.2 innings Wednesday against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Bob Melvin wanted Hendriks to get the final six outs of this pivotal Game 2, but he wasn't up to the task. He came in with a 5-1 lead and threw a season-high 49 pitches before Jake Diekman came on to get the final out. Thursday's Game 3 is a deciding game, but even so, Hendriks is probably unavailable after Wednesday's usage.
Sep 26 2020Hendriks (3-1) took the loss during Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Mariners after allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits with on strikeout and zero walks over 1.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander delivered a clean seventh inning to help force extras, but he was unable to replicate that performance during the eighth and was tagged with his first loss of the season. Hendriks still boasts an impressive 1.78 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and 37:3 K:BB over 25.1 innings while going 14-for-15 in save opportunities this season.
Sep 23 2020Hendriks picked up the save against the Dodgers on Wednesday after tossing a perfect ninth inning that included one strikeout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks was tasked with protecting a 6-4 lead in the ninth inning and did so with ease, retiring all three of his batters including a strikeout of Cody Bellinger. The 31-year-old right-hander has been phenomenal this season, sporting a 1.17 ERA and 0.65 WHIP with 14 saves across 22 appearances.
Sep 16 2020Hendriks allowed one hit and had two strikeouts over 1.2 scoreless innings to earn the save in Wednesday's 3-1 win at Colorado. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander entered with one out in the eighth inning and the bases empty, and he secured the five-out save with minimal fanfare. Hendriks has a 1.23 ERA, 0.68 WHIP and 32:3 K:BB over 22 innings while converting 13 of 14 save opportunities.
Sep 10 2020Hendriks picked up the save in Thursday's 3-1 win over Houston, striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning. He did not allow a baserunner. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander has now tossed a scoreless frame three days in a row, picking up a pair of saves and a win along the way. Hendriks has a remarkable 30:3 K:BB to go along with a 1.33 ERA and a major-league leading 12 saves.
Sep 9 2020Hendriks (3-0) pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts and earned the win Wednesday versus the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks entered with the game tied at two, and he did his part to keep it that way. The Athletics then rallied for the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to make him a winner. The 31-year-old has a 1.40 ERA, 0.72 WHIP, 29:3 K:BB and 11 saves in 12 chances this season as one of the more stable closers in baseball.
Sep 8 2020Hendriks earned the save in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Astros by allowing one hit and recording two strikeouts in a scoreless seventh inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander surrendered a one-out single to Aledmys Diaz but otherwise made quick work of Houston, delivering 10 of his 13 pitches for strikes. Hendriks has converted 11 of 12 saves chances with a 1.47 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and 27:3 K:BB through 18.1 innings this season.
Aug 26 2020Hendriks struck out two in a perfect ninth inning against the Rangers on Wednesday en route to his 10th save of the season. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With that, Hendriks is back in sole possession of the MLB saves lead. The right-hander blew a save in his first appearance of the 2020 season, but he has been unbelievable since with only one run and six hits allowed in his last 15 appearances (15.1 innings), going 10-for-10 in save chances and earning two wins along the way.
Aug 23 2020Hendriks (2-0) pitched a scoreless 10th inning and did not allow a baserunner to earn the win Sunday against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks was called upon to keep the game tied in extra innings. He made quick work of the Angels, retiring the side in order on just 11 pitches. The Athletics scored in the bottom of the inning to record the walk-off win, providing Hendriks with his second victory of the season. He's been strong throughout the campaign, racking up a 21:3 K:BB with a 1.17 ERA and nine saves across 15.1 innings.
Aug 21 2020Hendriks locked down the save against the Angels on Friday after allowing one hit and striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With a two-run lead in the ninth, Hendriks worked around a leadoff single to Anthony Rendon to finish off the win for the A's. The 31-year-old now leads the majors with nine saves on the season to go with a sparkling 1.26 ERA and 0.77 WHIP across 14 appearances.
Aug 20 2020Hendriks earned his eighth save of the season Wednesday against the Diamondbacks after pitching a scoreless ninth, striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks has gone 8-for-8 in save opportunities after blowing his first chance of the season, and he has also recorded four straight appearances without allowing a run or a hit. The 31-year-old right-hander is sporting a 0.90 ERA with 15 strikeouts across 10 innings in 10 appearances this month.
Aug 15 2020Hendriks picked up the save against the Giants on Saturday, pitching a scoreless ninth inning and allowing one walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks threw eight of his 12 pitches for strikes, though all four of his balls went to one batter -- Alex Dickerson -- for the closer's third walk of the campaign. Hendriks had little trouble aside from the base on balls, needing only six pitches to retire the other three batters he faced. The right-hander is tied for the MLB lead with seven saves on the campaign and has posted a stellar 1.59 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 17:3 K:BB through 11 appearances this season.
Aug 8 2020Henriks recorded the save Saturday against the Astros after allowing one run on two hits during the ninth inning. He had one strikeout and zero walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kyle Tucker hit a leadoff double and came around to score, but Hendriks was otherwise able to close things out versus Houston. The right-hander has converted five of six save opportunities and carries a 2.16 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 12:2 K:BB through 8.1 innings.
Aug 6 2020Hendriks allowed one hit and struck out one in a scoreless inning to earn the save Thursday against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks was called upon to protect a two-run lead in the ninth inning. After allowing a single to Shin-Soo Choo to lead off the frame, he quickly rebounded to slam the door shut via a strikeout and double play to earn his fourth save. Hendriks has pitched well to open the campaign, striking out nine across 6.1 innings and allowing just one earned run. He's among the most secure options for saves around the league.
Aug 4 2020Hendriks (1-0) pitched a perfect ninth inning, striking out one and earning the win Tuesday versus the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Bob Melvin called on Hendriks with the game tied at one after eight innings. Hendriks did his part, and a walk-off grand slam from Stephen Piscotty gave the reliever his first win of the year. Through 4.1 innings, the right-handed Hendriks has a 1.69 ERA and 0.94 WHIP with eight strikeouts.
Aug 2 2020Hendriks allowed one hit and struck out three in a scoreless inning of work for the save in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks struck out Evan White leading off the frame before Shed Long got aboard with a single. Hendriks then retired Kyle Seager in an 11-pitch at-bat and whiffed Austin Nola to complete the outing. The 31-year-old Hendriks is now 3-for-4 in save chances after a rough first outing.
Aug 1 2020Hendriks struck out one batter in a perfect 10th inning against the Mariners on Saturday en route to his second save of the season. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks got Tim Lopes to pop out on a bunt attempt before he retired the next two batters in more traditional fashion. The closer carousel is in full swing in MLB and Hendriks did blow a save in his first appearance of the year, but he has bounced back with two straight successful conversions.
Jul 26 2020Hendriks was perfect over 1.1 innings with a strikeout to earn the save in Sunday's 6-4 win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks blew a save Friday versus the Angels, but his second outing of the year went much smoother. The 31-year-old closer had a career year with 25 saves and a 1.80 ERA in 75 outings in 2019. He's likely to have a long leash this year as a fairly secure closer.
Jul 25 2020Hendriks was charged with a blown save after allowing an earned run on two hits and two walks over one inning in an extra-inning win over the Angels on Friday. He also recorded two strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks was called on as expected in the ninth with the Athletics trying to protect a 3-2 lead, but he allowed a game-tying home run to Jason Castro after getting Albert Pujols on an inning-opening groundout. Hendriks was far from smooth the rest of the frame, allowing a single and two walks, but he ultimately got out of a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout of Shohei Ohtani. Hendriks and his fantasy managers will hope Friday's hiccup isn't a harbinger, considering the veteran closer blew seven of 32 save chances last season despite snagging his first career All-Star selection.
Jul 5 2020Hendriks, who never stopped throwing after the suspension of spring training, already feels conditioned for regular-season action, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. "If you gave me a game tomorrow, I would be ready," Hendriks said Saturday after the A's first workout of summer camp. "I've been throwing to hitters already and throwing bullpens. It doesn't take me long to get game-ready." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The hard-throwing reliever earned his first All-Star nod in 2019 on the strength of a career-best 25 saves and a franchise-record 124 strikeouts in a relief capacity. Hendriks reports he actually was forced to pace himself shortly after spring training was suspended, when he suffered an oblique strain during a bullpen session; however, he's now fully healed from that setback and will be rigidly following the summer camp regimen laid out by pitching coach Scott Emerson and trainer Nick Paparesta to ensure his readiness for Opening Day.
Mar 24 2020Hendriks generated a 3.60 ERA and 1.00 WHIP across five innings over five appearances during Cactus League play. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Athletics' closer was solid in spring training, and even with the suspension of play, he was able to get a good amount of work in. Hendriks focused on some delivery tweaks this offseason, and Chris Haft of MLB.com reports the veteran remains as hungry as ever to prove he's worthy of the ninth-inning job despite the fact he currently has a secure grip on it. "I don't want that role given to me," Hendriks said of the closer's label. "I want to earn it. I want to work for it. My personality type, I need to know that I'm working for something. Rather than being given something and getting complacent with it. I need to prove to everybody that I want this role, I want the job and I'm going to take it."
Feb 25 2020Hendriks, who fired a scoreless third inning during which he allowed no hits or walks and recorded two strikeouts in a Cactus League loss to the Brewers on Monday, deployed a slight pause in his delivery with success during the outing, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. "Just something I can add in every now and then if I'm not feeling great or have an opportunity to take advantage of a hole," Hendriks said. "You can read guys' swings. Some have big leg kicks and you can throw that timing off a little bit." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Athletics' closer needed just 12 pitches to get through his one frame, and his new delivery particularly paid dividends when facing David Freitas, who he froze on a 94 mph fastball for a called third strike. Hendriks only utilized the pause in his motion on certain pitches and emphasized he'll decide whether to implement it in the regular season based on what results he gets from it during spring. His next opportunity to experiment is expected to come Thursday versus the Rockies.
Jan 10 2020Hendriks and the Athletics agreed to a one-year, $5.3 million deal Friday, avoiding arbitration, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks will more than double his salary from the previous season, a very deserved raise following his breakout campaign. In his ninth season in the majors, Hendriks improved his ERA from 4.13 to 1.80 and saw his strikeout rate jump from 21.2 percent to 37.4 percent. He saved 25 games and should be in line to save several more this season provided he can keep up a similar level of performance.
Sep 28 2019Hendriks (4-4) allowed two runs on three hits over two-thirds of an inning while blowing the save and taking the loss Friday against Seattle. He struck out one batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This wasn't the Hendriks we've grown accustomed to seeing; after retiring the first batter he faced, Hendriks uncorked a couple wild pitches and gave up three base knocks to lose the game. It was his second blown save in six appearances and seventh of the season, but he's been outstanding outside of those few hiccups. He sits with the second-lowest FIP among all qualified relievers this season (1.79), behind only Kirby Yates.
Sep 27 2019Hendriks struck out two in a perfect ninth inning to pick up the save against Seattle on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks was summoned to protect a two-run lead and made quick work of the Mariners, firing 10 of 13 pitches for strikes and whiffing two batters. The right-hander has held opponents scoreless in 21 of his last 24 appearances, converting 16 of 18 save opportunities over that stretch. He has emerged as one of baseball's most dominant closers in 2019, posting a 1.60 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 123:21 K:BB over 84.1 innings.
Sep 25 2019Hendriks struck out two through a hitless and scoreless ninth inning to record his 24th save in a 3-2 win over the Angels on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After the Athletics grabbed the lead in the top of the ninth, Hendriks quickly retired the Angels to nail down his 24th save. With the two strikeouts, The 30-year-old has a 4-3 record with a 1.62 ERA and 121 strikeouts through 83.1 innings.
Sep 17 2019Hendriks picked up the save against Kansas City on Tuesday, pitching a perfect ninth inning and striking out two batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks suffered a rare rough outing against the Royals on Monday, but he rebounded to make quick work of Kansas City on Tuesday, needing only nine pitches to retire the side in order. Hendriks induced six swinging strikes -- and hurled eight strikes altogether -- among those nine pitches, demonstrating just how dominating his repertoire can be when he is on his game. The 30-year-old has converted 23 of 29 save chances this season while posting a 1.66 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 118:21 K:BB over 81.1 innings.
Sep 14 2019Hendriks allowed a hit and a walk in the ninth inning, but recorded a strikeout and earned the save in Saturday's 8-6 win over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks walked Willie Calhoun to begin the inning, but erased the mistake with a double play. Nomar Mazara then reached on a single, but Hendriks whiffed Danny Santana to escape unharmed. The closer is up to 22 saves for the season. He's tossed seven straight scoreless innings, lowering his ERA to 1.59 for the year. Hendriks also boasts a 0.97 WHIP and 115:21 K:BB in 79.1 innings.
Sep 12 2019Hendriks earned the save against Houston on Thursday, pitching one scoreless inning and giving up one hit and one walk while striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks made things interesting by allowing the first two batters he faced to reach base, but a crucial strikeout of George Springer followed by a flyout and another whiff helped the 30-year-old preserve his 21st save. Hendriks went through a rough patch at the end of July in which he blew three out of four save opportunities but has recovered to convert 12 of 13 chances since the start of August. He has been a revelation in his first season as a closer, posting a 1.61 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 114:20 K:BB in 78.1 innings.
Sep 8 2019Hendricks struck out one batter in a perfect ninth inning to earn the save over Detroit on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendricks needed just 11 pitches to mow down the middle of the Tigers order for his 19th save. He owns a wicked 110:19 K:BB and 1.65 ERA over 76.1 innings this season.

Jul 2 2018Hendriks cleared waivers Monday and was outrighted to Triple-A Nashville, Julian McWilliams of The Athletic Bay Area reports.Hendriks went unclaimed after throwing 11 disappointing innings with a 7.36 ERA. He'll return to the Athletics in an organizational depth role, but now that he's off the 40-man roster he's one step further from returning to the big leagues.
Jun 7 2018Hendriks allowed two earned runs on three walks over 1.2 innings in a loss to the Rangers on Wednesday. He struck out one.The veteran made his first appearance since returning from an extended disabled list stint due to groin and hip issues, and he encountered issues with his control in his second and final frame. The two runs that went on his ledger crossed the plate after Hendriks had gotten the hook, but partly came about as a result of the three walks he'd issued to Delino DeShields, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Nomar Mazara. Now that he's apparently back to health, Hendriks will look to gain a rhythm and improve on the unsightly 9.64 ERA and 2.79 WHIP he's generated across his first 4.2 innings this season.
Jun 5 2018Hendriks (groin) was activated from the 10-day disabled list Tuesday.Hendriks landed on the disabled list April 14, but he's finally ready to return to action after suffering a groin strain. In six appearances this season out of the bullpen, Hendriks has allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out one across three innings.
Jun 2 2018Hendriks (groin, hip) allowed a hit -- a solo home run -- over one inning in Triple-A Nashville's loss to Round Rock on Saturday.Hendriks gave up a homer to the first batter he faced, Tommy Joseph. However, he then settled down to retire the next three hitters, hitting 94-95 mph on multiple occasions during his 13 pitches, Sounds play-by-play announcer Jeff Hem reports. Hendriks has now thrown 23 pitches overall across his pair of rehab appearances, and it remains to be seen if he'll now be deemed ready for a big-league return after being sidelined since April 14.
Jun 1 2018Hendriks (groin, hip) grabbed the win in Triple-A Nashville's victory over Round Rock on Thursday, firing a perfect sixth inning in which he recorded a strikeout. It was the reliever's first rehab outing after a long recovery from both groin and hip issues. Hendriks got through his one frame on just 10 pitches, so he's likely to log at least a couple of more appearances before being deemed ready for activation.
Jun 1 2018Hendriks (groin, hip) will make a rehab appearance out of the bullpen for Triple-A Nashville on Sunday, Jordan Wolf of MLB.com reports.Hendriks was credited with the win Thursday after getting through an efficient one-inning appearance on just 10 pitches. The veteran's near-two-month-long stay on the disabled list is likely nearing its end, with Saturday's appearance potentially his last in the minors before activation.
May 29 2018Hendriks (groin, hip) is set to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Nashville, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.Hendriks is ready to advance to the final stage of his nearly seven-week rehab program following his April groin strain and subsequent cyst removal from his hip. Barring any setbacks, he'll likely rejoin the Athletics' bullpen during the first two weeks of June.
May 22 2018Hendriks (groin, hip) threw his third bullpen session Tuesday and is expected to face hitters again in extended spring training Friday, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.Hendriks is inching closer to game action, and Friday's session will mark his second overall against hitters. The veteran reliever has been on the disabled list since April 14, but he appears to finally be in the latter stages of his recovery process.
May 16 2018Hendriks (groin, hip) is set to throw batting practice Thursday according to manager Bob Melvin, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The veteran reliever has been sidelined since April 14, and he's undergone a cyst removal from his hip during his time on the disabled list in addition to the groin strain that landed him there. Hendriks will presumably progress to minor-league rehab outings if all goes well Thursday, although another session against live hitters could also be warranted.
May 12 2018Hendriks (groin) will throw off the mound next week, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.Hendriks will get back on the mound for the first time since hitting the DL on April 14 with a groin strain. The right-hander resumed throwing a week after his injury, but he required a procedure to remove a cyst from his hip near the end of April. There still isn't a concrete timetable for his return, but an activation once the Athletics return home May 22 seems to be a reasonable date.
May 4 2018Hendriks (groin, hip) has yet to resume throwing off a mound, Michael Wagaman of MLB.com reports.Hendriks originally went on the disabled list on April 14 with a groin strain, but he then had a cyst removed from his hip 10 days later as well. The veteran reliever would probably like to press the reset button on his 2018 campaign, as in addition to his injuries, he's allowed a 9.00 ERA and 3.33 WHIP over three innings across six appearances.
Apr 24 2018Hendriks (groin) received a platelet rich plasma injection and had a cyst removed from his hip Tuesday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. There had been some hope that Hendriks would be able to come off the disabled list Tuesday, as he became eligible April 24th. However, he'll remain on the shelf a bit longer as he deals with this recent setback. Information regarding his eventual activation should surface as his level of activity increases.
Apr 21 2018Hendriks (groin) says he's making steady progress in his recovery from adductor tendinitis, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. "Every day making strides," he said.Hendriks strained his groin on April 13 and went on the 10-day disabled list the following day. The latest news implies that he may be able to come off the DL the first day he's eligible, and the next couple of days should shed further light on whether that remains realistic.
Apr 14 2018Hendriks (groin) exited Friday's loss to the Mariners after pitching to only one batter in the eighth inning, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports. The right-hander gave up a base hit to Guillermo Heredia before gingerly walking off the mound. With the A's needing a spot in the bullpen for Ryan Dull (shoulder), expect Hendriks to land on the disabled list, but as yet there's no indication of the severity of his groin strain or how long he might be out of action.
Apr 14 2018Hendricks (groin strain) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Saturday, Julian McWilliams of The Athletic Bay Area reports. He strained his right groin Friday, so this move was inevitable. Ryan Dull came off the DL in a corresponding move and will take Hendricks' place in the big-league bullpen. Hendricks gave up three runs with one strikeout in three innings this season prior to the injury
Apr 4 2018Hendriks fired 1.1 scoreless innings in Tuesday's 4-1 loss to the Rangers, allowing a hit and a walk while recording a strikeout. The 29-year-old righty had allowed an earned run on a pair of hits in his 2018 debut against the Angels last Saturday, so Tuesday's effort allowed him to gain a little early-season equilibrium. Hendriks has been serviceable across 123 appearances in his first two seasons in Oakland, amassing four wins, 26 holds and one save along the way. However, the long-ball issues that have plagued him frequently throughout his long career have also surfaced at times, as he's allowed 13 home runs over 128.2 innings during that span. Still blessed with a mid-90s fastball, Hendriks would naturally stand to see an uptick in multiple metrics if he can succeed at keeping the ball in the park more often this season.
Mar 26 2018Hendriks tossed a scoreless seventh inning in Sunday's 5-1 Cactus League loss to the Giants, lowering his spring ERA to 5.14.Granted, that figure is still cringe-worthy, but also deceptive in a couple of different ways. For starters, there's naturally the caveat about small spring samples, as Hendriks has generated the number over a modest seven innings across eight appearances. Moreover, the bulk of the damage came early, as he yielded three of the four earned runs he's given up over his first two appearances. Hendriks has bounced back to post five scoreless efforts in six subsequent six trips to the mound, looking more like the reliever that settled in after a rough start last season and finished with an impressive 78 whiffs over 64 innings across 70 appearances. Hendriks projects for another robust workload in 2018, and the fact he's been reasonably effective this spring at staying away from the home-run ball that's often plagued him throughout his career is a cautiously optimistic sign as well.
Jan 12 2018Hendriks agreed to a one-year deal with the A's on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports. This was the second year of arbitration eligibility for Hendriks, who posted a 4.22 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with 78 strikeouts in 64 innings last season. The right-hander is a solid presence out of the bullpen for Oakland, as he's regularly capable of hitting the mid- to high 90's, and should be able to work in high-leverage situations during this upcoming campaign.
Sep 20 2017Hendriks recorded the final two outs of Wednesday's win over the Tigers for his first career save. He struck out one batter.Ryan Dull started the ninth with regular closer Blake Treinen unavailable after pitching each of the previous three days. Dull made a mess of things, allowing Detroit to cut the lead to one run, but Hendriks cleaned up and now has a 2.88 ERA in 29 second-half appearances. He probably won't see many more save chances this season, if any, but Hendriks is establishing himself as a top setup man with his performance since the All-Star break.
Sep 19 2017Hendriks (4-2) picked up the win in Monday's 8-3 victory over the Tigers, allowing two hits over 1.2 scoreless innings and recording a strikeout.Hendriks got six key outs as part of a multi-reliever effort following emergency starter Raul Alcantara's early exit. The veteran righty now has five consecutive scoreless outings and hasn't walked a batter in his last 10 appearances.
Sep 18 2017Hendriks notched his 14th hold in Sunday's 6-3 win over the Phillies, pitching a clean sixth inning in which he notched a pair of strikeouts.Hendriks got through his outing on a quick eight pitches and has been outstanding since early August, as he's allowed just one earned run over his last 15 appearances. The stretch has lowered his ERA over a full run from 5.67 to 4.55 and cemented Hendriks as a trusted right-handed option out of the bullpen for manager Bob Melvin. The 28-year-old has also compiled a stellar 73 strikeouts over 59.1 innings this season, keeping him viable in AL-only and deep mixed formats that count holds.
Sep 4 2017Hendriks fired 1.1 scoreless innings in which he gave up a hit and recording a strikeout during Sunday's 10-2 loss to the Mariners.Hendriks is in the midst of one of his most effective stretches of the season, as he's now posted eight consecutive scoreless efforts. The 28-year-old right-hander has lowered his ERA from 5.55 to 4.75 over that stretch while allowing just two hits across eight innings and generating a 9:2 K:BB.
Aug 22 2017Hendriks fired a scoreless sixth inning in Monday's 7-3 loss to the Orioles. The 28-year-old right-hander is enjoying a relatively rare stretch of consistency, as he hasn't given up an earned run in four straight appearances. While a modest sample, it's an encouraging sight, considering Hendriks was touched up for four runs apiece in two separate July outings and gave up three runs (two earned) in the two appearances prior to his current streak. His 3.00 ERA over seven August outings counts as his best monthly figure in that category since a dominant May in which he posted an impressive 1.46 figure.
Aug 11 2017Hendriks allowed two unearned runs on two hits over an inning in Thursday's 7-2 loss to the Orioles. He also recorded a strikeout.Hendriks allowed a two-run double to Adam Jones, making it his fourth consecutive outing in which he's surrendered at least one run. The 28-year-old reliever has struggled with consistency throughout the season, as evidenced by his 5.55 ERA and 1.51 WHIP. While he offers plenty of strikeout upside (59:21 K:BB in 47 innings), it's often offset by his struggles in other categories.
Jul 28 2017Hendriks (3-2) gave up four earned runs on a hit and three walks over two-thirds of an inning in Friday's 8-4 extra-inning loss to the Blue Jays. He also recorded a strikeout. The 28-year-old right-hander gave up four earned runs for the second time in July, allowing a game-winning grand slam to Steve Pearce in the 10th inning. Hendriks may have been auditioning for a late-inning spot following closer Santiago Casilla's own implosion Wednesday, and if so, he certainly didn't make a strong case for the job. Save for a couple of stretches, Hendriks has had trouble stringing together an extended streak of scoreless appearances this season, leading to a 5.79 ERA and 1.45 WHIP that are his worst figures in those respective categories since 2014.
Jul 17 2017Hendriks notched his eighth hold in Sunday's 7-3 win over the Indians, getting two outs on two pitches to close out the eighth inning.Hendriks came on in relief of Daniel Coulombe with one out and one on and retired the potent duo of Edwin Encarnacion and Jose Ramirez on a lineout and groundout, respectively. The 28-year-old right-hander has found a semblance of consistency in recent appearances after a mostly rocky June, generating scoreless appearances in six of his last seven trips to the mound.
Jul 4 2017Hendriks fired a scoreless inning in Monday's 7-2 loss to the White Sox, giving up one hit and two walks. He also recorded a strikeout.Hendriks didn't make it easy on himself, as some control issues after he'd gotten two quick outs helped lead to him firing 26 pitches overall in the sixth. The 28-year-old has gotten July off to a solid start after a rocky June (7.30 ERA over 12.1 innings), putting together a pair of scoreless one-inning outings. The right-hander has served as a modest source of wins (three) and holds (seven) for fantasy owners this season, and he's likely to continue seeing a robust workload going forward.
Jun 24 2017Hendriks notched his seventh hold of the season in Friday's 3-0 win over the White Sox, firing a scoreless sixth inning and recording two strikeouts. The veteran right-hander was the first of several relievers to help preserve the slim lead after starter Jharel Cotton exited after five frames with a blister. Hendriks' strong outing was also a welcome sight from an individual standpoint, as he'd surrendered six earned runs over his previous seven trips to the mound. The 28-year-old's June hasn't been for the faint of heart, as he's offset a 5.56 ERA, a blown save and a loss with three holds, two victories and 19 strikeouts over 11.1 innings.
Jun 16 2017Hendriks (3-1) gave up an earned run on two hits and a walk over one inning in Thursday's 7-6 extra-inning win over the Yankees. He struck out two.Hendriks notched his third victory of the season despite allowing a go-ahead sacrifice fly to Starlin Castro in the top half of the 10th, as Khris Davis knocked in Rajai Davis and Chad Pinder in the home half of the frame for the win. The 28-year-old right-hander has struggled despite his favorable won-loss record, giving up an earned run in each of his last four outings and in five of the last six overall. He offers plenty of strikeout upside, but he's now sporting a 5.63 ERA over the eight innings encompassing his eight June appearances.
Jun 8 2017Hendriks fired two scoreless innings in Wednesday's 7-5 extra-inning loss to the Blue Jays, recording three strikeouts. The right-hander continues to be an excellent source of strikeouts, as he's now racked up multiple whiffs in three straight outings, and in five of his last six appearances overall. Hendriks has compiled five holds and two wins on the season as well and represents one of manager Bob Melvin's most trusted options out of what has been an inconsistent bullpen.
Jun 4 2017Hendriks (2-0) fired 1.1 scoreless innings in Saturday's 10-4 win over the Nationals, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out three. The veteran reliever posted his sixth straight scoreless outing while continuing to rack up the strikeouts, as he's now notched 13 whiffs over the 7.1 innings encompassing his last seven appearances overall. Hendriks has also lowered his ERA from a season-high 11.57 to his current 3.04 figure since April 19.
May 11 2017Hendriks fired a scoreless seventh inning in Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Angels, recording a strikeout. The veteran reliever extended his scoreless streak to 11 innings with Wednesday's effort, in which he needed a scant nine pitches to dispose of Andrelton Simmons, Danny Espinosa and Juan Graterol. Hendriks has stingy with both runs and contact in general, giving up just one hit over his last 7.2 innings since yielding six over his first 4.2 frames of the season.
May 9 2017Hendriks (1-0) fired two scoreless innings in Monday's 3-2 win over the Angels, giving up just one hit to notch his first win of the season. The 28-year-old right-hander has put together an excellent stretch of appearances since giving a pair of earned runs apiece in three straight mid-April outings. Hendriks has compiled 10 consecutive scoreless innings across his last eight trips to the mound, posting an impressive 10:1 K:BB over that span.
Apr 20 2017Hendriks fired a scoreless ninth inning in Wednesday's 9-1 win over the Rangers, recording a strikeout.Hendriks needed only 11 pitches, eight of which he threw for strikes, to close out Oakland's blowout win. The 28-year-old right-hander likely needed a low-leverage situation like Wednesday's to restore some confidence, considering he'd given up two earned runs apiece in his three prior trips to the mound. Hendriks' ERA remains an unsightly 9.53, but Wednesday's effort closely resembled the dominant pair of appearances that the veteran reliever opened the season with.
Apr 13 2017Hendriks gave up two earned runs on three hits and one walk over one inning in Wednesday's 8-3 win over the Royals. The 28-year-old righty entered the game with the luxury of an 8-0 lead but ran into trouble, sandwiching a free pass to Raul Mondesi and a double to Mike Moustakas around a flyball out by Alex Gordon. A subsequent infield single by Lorenzo Cain and bloop hit by Eric Hosmer accounted for the two runs that Hendriks allowed, and to his credit, he was able to limit further damage by retiring Drew Butera and Brandon Moss with Cain and Hosmer on to end the inning. It was the first rocky outing of the season for the reliever, who'd pitched 2.1 scoreless innings and notched four strikeouts over his first pair of appearances.
Feb 25 2017Hendriks has informed Team Australia that he may be available if they advance to the second round of the World Baseball Classic, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.Hendriks withdrew from the WBC on Saturday because he doesn't feel he's where he needs to be for high-intensity games. The decision appears to be advisory, as the right-hander spent a good portion of last season on the DL with elbow inflammation. Whether he plays or not, Hendriks appears to be focused on preparing for the season in the most efficient way possible.
Feb 24 2017Hendriks has decided not to pitch for Team Australia in the World Baseball Classic, Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports. His decision to withdraw from the WBC does not appear to be injury-related, but instead just a personal decision not to go. The 28-year-old right-hander will now have the opportunity to spend the entirety of spring training with the Athletics, as he looks to get himself ready for another season in Oakland's bullpen.
Jan 15 2017Hendriks agreed to a one-year, $1.1 million deal with the Athletics on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports. When healthy, Hendriks was one of the most heavily-used relievers for the Athletics in 2016. Despite a rough start to the season in which he was hampered by an elbow injury, the 27-year-old was able to put together a solid campaign to the tune of a 3.76 ERA (2.85 FIP) over 64.2 innings pitched. He'll be a factor out of the bullpen again in 2017.
Aug 15 2016Hendricks has allowed six earned runs in 28.1 innings of work (1.91 ERA) since returning from the disabled list on June 19.Before his DL stint for an elbow injury, Hendricks owned an 8.27 ERA and 1.77 WHIP. The injury must have been hampering him badly because he has since overwhelmed hitters with a 0.92 WHIP to go along with a 26:6 K:BB.
Jun 19 2016Hendriks (elbow) was activated from the 15-day DL on Sunday.Hendriks completed a three-outing rehab assignment at Triple-A Nashville without incident, so he'll rejoin the 25-man roster for the first time since early May. The lefty owned a 8.27 ERA and 1.77 WHIP over 16.1 innings prior to landing on the DL, but his excellent 19:1 K:BB ratio hints that he may have been a victim of some unfortunate luck.
Jun 18 2016Hendriks (elbow) will come off the DL within the next two days, per manager Bob Melvin, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.Hendriks has been on a rehab assignment for the last week-and-a-half, most recently tossing two innings at Triple-A Nashville on Thursday. It's unclear if he'll squeeze in one final rehab appearance, but barring a setback he'll return to the A's on Sunday or Monday.
Jun 17 2016Hendriks (elbow) tossed two innings in a rehab appearance with Triple-A Nashville on Thursday.Hendriks has thrown four times since beginning a rehab assignment June 7, and he has allowed two earned runs over 5.2 innings (3.18 ERA) while compiling a 4:2 K:BB. He is working as a reliever, so it should not be long before he is ready to rejoin the A's.
Jun 5 2016Manager Bob Melvin said Hendriks (elbow) faced hitters Saturday and "felt great," MLB.com's Jane Lee reports.Hendriks has been on the DL for a little under a month due to the sore elbow, but he seems to be trending in the right direction. The A's could clear him to head out on a rehab assignment soon.
May 28 2016Hendriks (elbow) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Monday, John Hickey of Bay Area News Group reports.Hendriks has been playing catch in recent weeks as he returns from an elbow injury and is now ready to throw off a mound. If all goes well in his bullpen session, he'll likely pitch in batting practice or a simulated game and then prepare for a rehab assignment. Barring any setbacks, the 27-year-old is still aiming for a return to Oakland's bullpen sometime in mid-June.
May 18 2016Hendriks (elbow) is still experiencing soreness when playing catch, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports. With the soreness still lingering a little over a week after Hendriks hit the DL, it's starting to sound like he will be out well beyond the minimum 15 days. The 27-year-old was struggling mightily to open the season, allowing 15 earned runs in his first 11 appearances (16.1 innings). His stuff played up really well in the bullpen last year, but the uncertainty regarding a possible return date makes him a justifiable drop in AL-only leagues.
May 10 2016Hendriks (elbow) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday.Having last pitched Saturday, the 27-year-old Hendriks will be eligible to return from the disabled list May 23. Despite owning a 19:1 K:BB ratio, he's surrendered a whopping 16 runs (15 earned) in just 16.1 innings over 11 appearances. His elbow may have been contributing to the struggles, but poor BABIP luck was also factor.
May 9 2016Hendriks has been dealing with an elbow injury for several days, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.Hendriks most recently pitched Saturday against the Orioles where he gave up three earned runs over just 1.2 innings of work. The severity of his injury remains unclear, but the rest of Oakland's bullpen will need to fill in if Hendriks is ultimately slated for a stint on the DL.
Apr 22 2016Hendriks pitched .1 innings, giving up two hits while striking out a batter in the Athletics' 7-3 loss to the Yankees on Thursday.Hendriks has been roughed up in the early going this season as he's given up 13 hits and seven earned runs over 3.1 innings. It could just be April jitters because the righty was one of the Blue Jay's most reliable relievers in 2015 as evidenced by his 2.92 ERA and 1.08 WHIP over 64.7 innings. The 27-year-old is looking to bring that type of production for the A's late in games in 2016.
Nov 20 2015Hendriks was traded to the A's in exchange for Jesse Chavez on Friday, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports. He was excellent last year out of the Jays' bullpen, posting a 2.92 ERA with 71 strikeouts in 64.2 innings. That said, Hendriks doesn't figure to get many save opportunities with Sean Doolittle holding down the closer role for the A's.
Aug 27 2015Hendricks imploded against the Rangers on Thursday, giving up six hits and three runs in an inning of work.Starting pitcher Marco Estrada was stuck with the loss despite allowing one run, so Hendricks owes him a steak dinner for this one. It was a stunning disaster, as the Australian righty hadn't allowed a run in a month and a half, dating back to July 8, and he entered the game with a sparkling 56:9 K:BB. That said, the Rangers did to some degree dink and dunk their way to this rally, so don't downgrade Hendricks too much based on this performance. Unfortunately, he hasn't been much of a source of holds in middle relief for Toronto, so those fantasy owners using him are mostly doing so for ratios, which he certainly didn't help Thursday.
Aug 19 2015Hendriks pitched a perfect inning, notching one strikeout to pick up his fourth win of the season in Tuesday's victory over the Phillies. After R.A. DIckey labored through four-plus innings and loaded the bases in the fifth, Hendriks calmly induced a double play and then struck out Ryan Howard to limit the damage to just one run. With as many talented arms as the Jays now have in their bullpen, Hendriks has fallen slightly out of favor despite his 2.36 ERA.
Jul 29 2015Hendriks threw two perfect innings, striking out five in Tuesday's loss to the Phillies. After getting shelled three appearances ago, Hendriks has been outstanding, albeit in limited work. In those three appearances, he's pitched 5.1 innings, striking out eight and hasn't allowed a baserunner. The 26-year-old Australian has a 45:6 K:BB ratio on the season while holding a 2.64 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP. Though he doesn't see many high-leverage situations, Hendriks is a nice source of strikeouts when he pitches, but is used too irregularly to deploy on a regular basis.
Jul 9 2015Hendriks gave up two earned runs in 0.2 innings in Wednesday's loss to the White Sox.After making 11 appearances in June without conceding a run, he's now given up earned runs in back-to-back appearances. While his ERA still sits at a very manageable 3.00, the 26-year-old has never held an ERA lower than 5.23 for a season and could be a regression candidate in the second half of the season.
Jun 30 2015Hendriks pitched 1.2 perfect innings in Monday's loss to the Red Sox.Hendriks continued to lower his peripherals as he hasn't given up an earned run since May 26. His ERA now sits at 2.55 with a 0.99 WHIP with a 36:6 K:BB ratio in 35.1 innings. While he doesn't pitch in many high-leverage situations, if he continues pitching as well as he has over the past month, he could be in line for a promotion to the later innings.
Jun 10 2015Hendriks picked up his second win of the season in Tuesday's win over the Marlins. He struck out one while giving up a hit in one inning. After not recording a decision all season, that's now back-to-back appearances with a win for the 26-year-old. With Brett Cecil having a firm grasp on the closer role, Hendriks' fantasy value is tied to fluky decisions such as this one, though he does strike out more than a batter per inning.
May 9 2015Hendriks tossed three shutout innings of relief on Saturday, allowing just one hit and striking out three. He's been solid in long relief for the Jays, posting a 3.46 ERA and 14:2 K:BB ratio in 13 innings so far. If he keeps dealing, Hendriks could put himself next in line for a spot in the Toronto rotation should a spot open up.
Apr 15 2015Hendriks struck out three in 1.2 innings of work in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Rays.Coming into the season, it was unclear what kind of role Hendriks would have, but through three appearances, he has shown a strong ability to strike batters out while avoiding giving up the home runs he had previously. For a pitcher with a strikeout per nine ratio that's never crossed seven, his 13.5 strikeouts per nine innings almost assuredly won't last, but if he can keep the ball in the ballpark and continue striking batters out, he may have some value in deeper leagues.
Apr 4 2015Hendriks has made the Blue Jackets' Opening Day roster, Mike Wilner of Sportsnet.ca reports. The Blue Jays already have one long man on hand in Marco Estrada, so it might be difficult for Hendriks to carve out a role out of the bullpen. The right-hander compiled a 5.23 ERA and 1.37 WHIP across nine appearances with the Royals and Blue Jays a season ago.
Oct 30 2014Hendriks was traded to the Blue Jays on Thursday, Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports. It's yet to be announced what Kansas City will receive in return, but the expectation is that it will be a catcher. Hendriks struggled for both the Royals and Blue Jays this season, compiling a cumulative 5.23 ERA across 32.2 innings. He also spent considerable time at Triple-A, where he found better success, going 12-2 with a cumulative 2.45 ERA.
Oct 24 2014The Royals designated Hendriks for assignment Friday.A spot on the 40-man roster had to be freed up with Moises Sierra coming aboard via a waiver claim from the White Sox, and Hendriks was the casualty. The 25-year-old Hendriks struggled in nine appearances (six starts) between Toronto and Kansas City this season, posting a 5.23 ERA and 1.37 WHIP over 32.2 innings, but he was much better at the Triple-A level (2.45 ERA, 0.96 WHIP).
Sep 16 2014Hendriks gave up four earned runs on seven hits and a walk in three innings Tuesday against the White Sox.Despite remaining in the rotation, Hendriks has not fared well, especially from a fantasy standpoint, as he hasn't lasted longer than four innings in any of his last three starts. He will now disappear off the fantasy map for the rest of the season, as Danny Duffy is healthy enough to take back his spot in the rotation, leaving Hendriks with a low-leverage bullpen role.
Sep 15 2014Hendriks will start Tuesday's game against the White Sox, the Kansas City Star reports.Hendriks will get a third straight turn in the rotation despite two relatively average outings earlier this month. He lasted only 2.1 innings September 11 versus Boston and surrendered three earned runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings September 6 in New York. On the season, Henriks holds a 5.06 ERA in 26.2 major league innings.
Sep 11 2014Hendriks lasted just 2.1 innings against Boston on Thursday, allowing three runs -- two earned -- and four hits. He issued two walks and struck out one, tossing 65 pitches.Hendriks was pulled in the third inning after allowing an RBI single to Will Middlebrooks. Reliever Casey Coleman bailed out Hendriks from further damage, getting a double play ball with the bases loaded. Hendriks was filling in for Danny Duffy (shoulder), so whether or not he makes another start will depend on Duffy's status. If Duffy is unable to go in his next turn, and the Royals don't seek out an alternative, Hendriks would be lined up to start at home against the White Sox.
Sep 6 2014Hendriks will likely replace Danny Duffy (shoulder) in the Royals' rotation, the Kansas City Star's Andy McCullough reports. The Royals are sending Duffy for an MRI, and he's expected to miss at least one start. Hendriks tossed four innings in relief of Duffy on Saturday, after Duffy left following his first pitch of the first inning, and allowed four runs (three earned) while striking out three.
Sep 3 2014Hendriks was recalled from Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Tuesday.Hendriks made a dazzling spot start in place of Yordano Ventura last week, covering seven innings and yielding one run on four hits and no walks. While he'll be ticketed for long relief upon rejoining the big club, he'll likely be the first man up to join the rotation in the event of another injury to a starter.
Aug 28 2014Hendriks was optioned to Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Thursday.Filling in for Yordano Ventura (back) on Wednesday, Hendriks gave up just one run on four hits and zero walk, while striking out five over seven innings, in a no-decision against the Twins. Since he wasn't going to be available for several days anyway, the Royals went ahead and sent Hendriks to the minors to clear room for Scott Downs (neck), but Hendriks can return as soon as next Tuesday.
Aug 28 2014Hendriks gave up a run on four hits while striking out five over seven innings Wednesday against the Twins.Hendriks filled in admirably for Yordano Ventura, who was skipped due to a stiff back. The Australian native was 1-0 with a 6.08 ERA in three starts for the Blue Jays earlier this year. It remains to be seen whether Ventura will be able to make his next start Monday versus the Rangers. If not, Hendriks has earned another turn.
Aug 26 2014Hendriks will fill Yordano Ventura's (back) open spot in the rotation Wednesday against the Twins, Blair Kerkhoff of The Kansas City Star reports.Facing the organization (the Twins) that signed him out of Australia, Hendriks will look to improve upon the three nods made for the Blue Jays earlier this season (nine runs on 12 hits and four walks to go with eight strikeouts in 13.1 innings). He's fared much better since he was dealt to the Royals' organization before the trade deadline, posting a 2.83 ERA, 1.114 WHIP, and 35:6 BB:K in 35 innings (five starts) at Triple-A Omaha.
Jun 20 2014Hendriks was optioned to Triple-A on Friday night. After getting shelled by the Reds on Friday, Hendriks was returned to Buffalo while the Jays added another relief arm in Rob Rasmussen. Eventually, Steve Delabar is likely to rejoin the Toronto bullpen, but Hendriks' services were needed in a spot start Friday night.
Jun 20 2014Hendriks was absolutely blasted in his only start of his current stint in the majors, giving up six earned runs on six hits in just 1.2 innings against the Reds on Friday.Hendriks actually got through the first inning unscathed by only allowing a base knock, but was unloaded on by the Reds in the second, as four hits in a row following by a passed ball and a walk forced manager John Gibbons to yank the Australian after just 47 pitches. It was already established that he'd be sent back down to the minors after this start to accommodate the return of R.A. Dickey (groin) on Sunday, but Friday's disastrous outing definitely doesn't help his cause for potential call-ups later in the season. In three starts for the Jays this season, Hendriks now has an unsightly 6.08 ERA with eight punchouts and a 1.20 WHIP in 13.1 innings.
Jun 19 2014Hendriks will be called up to start Friday's game in Cincinnati, Brendan Kennedy of the Toronto Star reports.R.A. Dickey (groin) will move back from Friday to Sunday, and all of the Jays' other starters will move back one day. Hendriks will be sent back down after his outing, but he could be brought back up in the future, if the Jays need another spot starter or deal with an injury in the rotation. Hendriks still doesn't strike out many batters, but he posted a 2.31 ERA in two starts earlier this season, and owns a 1.92 ERA, 6.91 K/9 and 0.51 BB/9 over 70.1 innings with Triple-A Buffalo this season.
Jun 1 2014Hendriks has been optioned to Triple-A Buffalo, Sportsnet's Barry Davis reports.Hendriks made two strong starts for the Blue Jays, allowing just three earned runs over 11.2 innings, to go along with a 0.77 WHIP. He'll continue to work on his craft in the minors, and would be a strong candidate for a spot start should a need arise down the road. A corresponding move has yet to be announced at this time.
May 29 2014Hendriks will start Tuesday's game against the Tigers, the Blue Jays' official website reports.A day off on Monday gives Toronto the option to skip Hendriks, but the Jays will instead take the opportunity to get each of their starters some extra rest. Hendriks has a 2.31 ERA and 8:3 K:BB over 11.2 innings in two starts, but his track record in the majors is terrible, and mlb.com's Gregor Chisolm notes that Hendriks was rather lucky in his last outing. That said, the Jays aren't exactly teeming with strong alternatives, so Hendriks should have some margin for error.
May 23 2014The Blue Jays recalled Hendriks from Triple-A Buffalo on Friday.Hendriks posted a 1.48 ERA in nine games with Buffalo this season, but he has posted a 6.06 ERA across 30 major league appearances over the last three years, so he will be challenged to continue pitching well. Hendriks will jump right into the Blue Jays' rotation and start Friday against the A's.
May 23 2014Hendriks gave Toronto a solid outing, allowing just one run on three hits, walking three and striking out three over 5.2 innings of a 3-2 against Oakland on Friday night. He got off to a fantastic start at Triple-A and that earned him a start in Toronto. He threw just 79 pitches (51 for strikes) and he is capable of a higher strike ratio, but this outing should get him anther start which would come at home against Tampa Bay if he stays on a regular schedule.
May 22 2014Hendriks will be called up from Triple-A Buffalo to start Friday's game against the A's, The National Post's John Lott reports.Hendriks was previously a candidate to start Saturday, but the Jays will instead go with R.A. Dickey for the middle game of the series, leaving the Australian right-hander to pitch Friday. Hendriks owns a 1.48 ERA and 0.55 BB/9 mark through 48.2 innings with Triple-A Buffalo this season, but his 6.66 K/9 mark indicates that big-league hitters still won't have much trouble hitting him. The Aussie owns a dreadful 6.06 ERA over 156 career innings, with a 1.74 HR/9 mark, 5.31 FIP and 4.59 xFIP. He should have every opportunity to stick in the rotation, but probably won't be working with a long leash.
May 21 2014Hendriks is considered the favorite to be named the Blue Jays' starter for Saturday's game, SportsNet's Shi Davidi reports.Manager John Gibbons said he expects to announce who will start Saturday at home against Oakland after Thursday's game. Hendriks has an exceptional 1.48 ERA in 48.2 innings at Triple-A Buffalo this season, based primarily on his ability to throw strikes (0.55 BB/9) while also not allowing home runs (0.55 HR/9).
May 18 2014The Blue Jays have an opening in their rotation for Saturday, and while Marcus Stroman and Todd Redmond had been thought to be the two contestants for the spot start, Hendriks - currently at Triple-A Buffalo - could be in the mix as well, The Buffalo News reports.Hendriks is 5-0 for Buffalo with an ERA of 1.48. He's pitched in the majors before to disastrous results (2-13 record for Minnesota with a 6.10 ERA), but he's still just 25 and seems to have figured some things out. Unlike Redmond and Stroman, he's also stretched out as a starter. Hendriks pitched well Saturday in front of some of the Toronto brass, so we should know soon which direction the team will turn for the weekend start, and possibly beyond.
May 3 2014Hendriks has dazzled through four starts for Triple-A Buffalo this season, posting a perfect 4-0 record with a 1.26 ERA, 0.73 WHIP and 26 strikeouts through 28.2 innings. The Australian righty is a big reason why the Bisons lead their division after one month of play, as he has held opposing batters to a tidy .198 batting average. Hendriks hasn't toed big league rubber since September of last season with the Twins, but if he keeps dominating with Buffalo, the Jays will have yet another enticing call-up option behind fellow-Bison Marcus Stroman, who has also been great with a 1.69 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 38 K's of his own. Keep an eye on these two.
Feb 21 2014The Blue Jays claimed Hendriks off waivers from the Orioles on Friday, Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com reports. It's been a rather hectic couple of months for Hendriks, who will head to Toronto to join his fourth different organization since the beginning of December. The 25-year-old right-hander has posted a 6.06 ERA and a 5.8 K/9 in 30 major league appearances (28 starts) to date, but he has shown pretty good control in the minors (1.6 BB/9 at Triple-A) and can at least fill an organizational starting pitching need.
Feb 19 2014Hendriks was designated for assignment Wednesday, Eduardo Encina of the Baltimore Sun reports.Hendriks was designated to make room for the newly-signed Ubaldo Jimenez on the 40-man roster.
Dec 23 2013Hendriks was claimed off waivers by the Orioles from the Cubs on Monday.Hendriks has bounced organizations this month after being designated for assignment by the Twins and being claimed by the Cubs. The Aussie right-hander is now headed to the Orioles' organization. With career marks of a 6.06 ERA and a 2.7 BB/9 rate, it seems his next destination on the mound will be in the bullpen.
Dec 13 2013Hendriks was claimed off waivers by the Cubs on Friday, the Minneapolis Star Tribune's LaVelle E. Neal III reports.Hendriks was designated for assignment by the Twins last week, after posting a 6.06 ERA and 1.59 WHIP over the last three seasons. As the owner of a career 5.77 K/9 mark and 40.4 percent ground ball rate, he hasn't shown any real promise in the majors. Perhaps the Cubs envision a move to the bullpen, as Hendriks has been atrocious as a starter.
Sep 19 2013Hendriks will move to a bullpen role with Cole De Vries taking his spot in the rotation Sunday against the Athletics, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.Manager Ron Gardenhire decided he had seen enough from Hendriks in a starting role after he failed to make it out of the first inning in his last outing, surrendering seven runs. Hendriks didn't fare much better during his other seven turns in the rotation, going 1-3 with a 6.87 ERA and 1.69 WHIP.
Sep 16 2013Hendriks was an absolute disaster Monday night, allowing seven runs while recording just two outs in a start against the White Sox.Hendriks has been more or less a train wreck this month, allowing 15 runs in 10.1 September innings. The owner of a 6.87 ERA, Hendriks can't be much worse when he takes the mound against the Athletics this weekend.
Sep 11 2013Hendriks gave up three runs over 5.1 innings with six strikeouts and one walk, but got a no-decision in Tuesday's win over Oakland. After struggling in the majors earlier in the season, Hendriks has improved his last three starts with a 4.02 ERA and 11:5 K:BB ratio in 15.2 innings. A strong finish to the season could help his case to win a spot in the 2014 rotation.
Sep 4 2013Hendriks gave up five runs (three earned) over 4.1 innings Wednesday against Houston, but did not factor into the decision. He pitched himself into a corner early, as he allowed three first inning runs and threw close to 40 pitches. He'll get a chance to redeem himself in his next outing, which could come against either Oakland or the Angels.
Aug 31 2013Hendriks gave up one run on five hits and three walks with two strikeouts over six innings against the Rangers on Friday.Hendriks was sitting on the short end of a 1-0 pitcher's duel before the Twins managed to get to Yu Darvish in the seventh inning and made Hendriks a winner in this one. It wasn't the most stellar effort, but Hendriks used nine ground ball outs and one double play to escape a few tense moments and pick up his first win of the season. He'll get the Astros on the road next, but is still not a recommended starter.
Aug 24 2013Hendriks allowed seven runs, all earned, over 4.1 innings and was the losing pitcher Saturday against the Indians. He gave up seven hits while walking one and failing to record a strikeout. If Hendriks is hoping to stay with the Twins for the remainder of the season he will certainly need to perform better in his next start, which could be difficult since his next start will likely be on the road against the Rangers. After four starts this season, Hendriks owns an 0-2 record to go along with a 6.20 ERA and just eight strikeouts.
Aug 23 2013Hendriks was officially recalled from Triple-A Rochester, according to MLB.com.With the Twins dealing with injuries in the rotation, Hendriks was brought up to start Saturday's game in Cleveland. He's got a 3.65 ERA with a 46:11 K:BB over his last 10 starts at Triple-A and could stick in the rotation the rest of the way if he can string together a couple of quality starts.
Aug 22 2013Hendriks will be recalled from Triple-A Rochester and start Saturday at Cleveland, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.Hendriks has a 4.67 ERA at Triple-A Rochester, but has pitched better recently with a 3.65 ERA and 46:11 K:BB ratio in 66.2 innings over his last ten starts. A strong outing or two in the majors could keep him in the rotation into September with the Twins dealing with injuries in the rotation.
Aug 9 2013Hendriks struck out three and walked one while giving up two runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings in a spot start against the White Sox on Friday. After the outing, he was optioned to Triple-A Rochester.Since he served as the Twins' 26th man for Friday's doubleheader, it was highly unlikely that Hendriks was going to stick around. He hasn't missed bats at Triple-A this season, so a return before September is unlikely barring an injury or two to the starters currently ahead of him on the organizational depth chart.
Aug 7 2013Hendriks will be recalled in order to start the back end of Friday's doubleheader at the White Sox.After making two starts for the Twins out of spring training, Hendriks has spent the remainder of the season at Triple-A Rochester, going 3-8 with a 5.12 ERA, 1.415 WHIP, and 50:14 K:BB ratio in 84.1 innings. He'll act as the 26th man Friday, which will result in a prompt option back to Rochester after the outing.
Aug 5 2013Hendriks is expected to be tabbed for the back end of Friday's doubleheader at the White Sox, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.Hendriks was a part of the Twins' rotation when spring training broke due to Scott Diamond residing on the DL to begin the season. Two modest starts in the majors aside, Hendriks has spent the year at Triple-A Rochester, putting up an unspectacular 3-8 record, 5.12 ERA, 1.415 WHIP, and 50:14 K:BB ratio in 84.1 innings. While the production is nothing to write home about, the fact that he started Sunday and will be on regular rest makes the decision a logical one.
Jun 25 2013Hendriks has given up 10 runs over 10 innings at Triple-A Rochester in his first two starts back from an elbow injury.Hendriks missed about a month with right elbow inflammation. He did have have five strikeouts and no walks in his last outing Monday, so perhaps it won't take him long to shake off the rust.
Apr 13 2013Hendriks was optioned to Triple-A Rochester to make room on the 25-man roster for Scott Diamond (elbow), FOX Sports North reports. In Diamond's absence, Hendriks made two starts, going 0-1 with a 4.66 ERA, 1.345 WHIP, and 5:1 K:BB ratio in 9.2 innings. If the Twins endure another injury to the rotation as the season wears on, his name could be the first called upon to make a spot start or two.
Apr 11 2013Hendriks allowed one run on four hits with no walks and four strikeouts during Wednesday's loss to the Royals. This was actually a nice improvement over his first outing of the year as Hendriks seemed to be more in control of his pitches. He threw 65 of his 94 pitches for strikes and induced eight ground ball outs. He's a low-end option at best, but could be useful in deeper leagues if he can continue to keep the walks to a minimum while working towards pitching deeper into games.
Apr 5 2013Hendriks gave up four runs on eight hits over 4.2 innings against the Orioles on Friday afternoon.Although he did not factor in the decision, it was hardly an inspiring start from Hendriks, as he fanned just one in the outing and needed 96 pitches to get 14 outs. He'll look to turn things around against Kansas City on Wednesday in his next scheduled start.
Apr 4 2013Hendriks will start Friday against Baltimore with Cole De Vries' first start of the regular season pushed back until Sunday due to a forearm injury, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.Hendriks took a liner off his hand in his last spring outing, but has been able to throw in the bullpen the past week without any issues.
Mar 29 2013Hendriks (hand) threw in the bullpen Thursday with no problems and will pitch in a minor league game Sunday, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.Hendriks was hit in his pitching hand by a line drive in his last spring outing, but it doesn't look like a serious issue. Hendriks may make a start in the rotation with Scott Diamond on the DL, but it's not clear if he of Cole De Vries will stick in the rotation when Diamond returns. However, it looks like De Vries is more likely to remain in the majors given his strong performance this spring.
Mar 28 2013Hendriks (hand) will throw a bullpen session Thursday, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.Hendriks took a liner off his hand Tuesday and is just going through the process to return to game action. The injury is considered minor, so if Hendriks gets through Thursday's session without incident, he should be safe to complete his first turn in the rotation when the season starts.
Mar 26 2013Hendriks was removed from Tuesday's Grapefruit League outing with a bruised right hand, MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger reports.Hendriks tossed 2.2 shutout innings Tuesday before leaving the game. While he is expected to be a part of the Twins' Opening Day rotation after Sam Deduno and P.J. Walters were sent to the minors, Hendriks current ailment raises some doubt on that front. Nonetheless, consider Hendriks day-to-day until the extent of the injury is known.
Mar 26 2013Hendriks looks set to begin the season in Minnesota's rotation after Sam Deduno and P.J. Walters were sent to the minors. It's not clear whether Hendriks or Cole De Vries will remain in the rotation when Scott Diamond returns from the DL in mid April, so Hendriks may have just one or two start in the majors to show he should stay in the majors.
Mar 22 2013Hendriks gave up just one hit in four scoreless innings in Thursday's spring training win over the Yankees. He lowered his spring ERA to 4.74.Hendriks is behind Cole De Vries, and possibly Sam Deduno, for the fifth starter role, but he still has a chance to make the rotation if he strings together a few outings like this one.
Mar 11 2013Hendriks gave up four runs on seven hits in three innings in Sunday's spring training game. He gave up three home runs as his spring ERA rose to 5.73.Hendriks does have a 7:3 K:BB ratio in 11 innings, but he's likely fallen behind Cole De Vries for the sixth starter position this spring. Since it's not clear if Kyle Gibson will begin the season in the majors, Hendriks or De Vries could begin the season in the Minnesota rotation. Hendriks is a strong enough prospect that he should be in the Minnesota rotation again at some point this summer, but he'll need to reduce his home runs allowed - which was a big issue with him in the majors (17 home runs in 16 starts) last season.
Mar 6 2013Hendriks gave up two runs over three innings but had three strikeouts and one walk in Tuesday's spring training loss to Tampa Bay. He's given up three earned runs in eight innings this spring with five strikeouts and two walks.Hendriks looks fully healthy after having surgery to remove bone chips in his throwing elbow in October. It's not clear if Hendriks will begin the season in the rotation as he's likely the No. 6 starter. However, there will likely be an opening at least in April as it's not clear if Scott Diamond will be ready due to a sore elbow and it's also not clear if the Twins will begin with Kyle Gibson in the rotation since he faces an inning cap after Tommy John surgery.
Feb 13 2013Hendriks is on a normal throwing schedule after having surgery to remove bone chips in his throwing elbow in October, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.Hendriks enters spring training fighting for a spot in the rotation, but the odds are he'll begin the season in the majors with several Twins starters coming back from injuries. While he had a 5.59 ERA in the majors last year, he had a strong Triple-A season (2.20 ERA) and could improve with more experience.
Dec 3 2012Hendriks recently underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. The right-hander won't be able to pitch for Australia in the World Baseball Classic, but, barring setbacks, it seems Hendriks should be ready come spring training. He's expected to compete for a spot in the Twins' rotation despite going 1-8 and posting a 5.59 ERA in his 16 starts last season.
Sep 24 2012Hendriks was not effective against the Yankees Monday night, surrendering six runs in 6.1 innings of work.He had allowed four runs through six innings, but served up solo shots to Raul Ibanez and Eric Chavez in the seventh inning before being pulled. His first start since the recall went poorly as he remains winless on the year. Hendricks did have impressive numbers in the minors. So despite the poor transition to the majors thus far, Hendriks is worth monitoring going forward.
Aug 21 2012Hendriks was recalled from Triple-A Rochester and will start Wednesday at Oakland.Hendriks has been dominant at Triple-A with a 2.20 ERA and 82:28 K:BB ratio in 106.1 innings. However, he's struggled in the majors with a 7.04 ERA and 23:10 K:BB ratio in 38.1 innings. Despite Saturday's rough outing, Hendriks will get at least one more turn in the rotation.
Jun 15 2012Twins manager Ron Gardenhire confirmed that Hendriks will start Saturday against the Brewers, MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger reports. The Twins won't make the official move until after Friday's game. With P.J. Walters (shoulder) hitting the 15-day DL, Hendriks could get an opportunity to stick around for multiple starts.
Jun 14 2012Hendriks is expected to be called up from Triple-A Rochester to make a start for the Twins this weekend, Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. The Twins won't make any final decisions until Thursday, but with P.J. In seven minor league starts, Hendricks is 5-0 with a 1.94 ERA and 42:13 K:BB ratio in 46.1 innings. Regardless of his recent success in the minors, owners should wait to see if that translates to the major-league level before giving Hendricks much consideration.
Apr 9 2012Hendriks is slated to fly back from Baltimore on Monday after spending most of the weekend in the hospital due to a bout with food poisoning, reports Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com. He has a 1.64 ERA this spring (two ER in 11 innings) with an 11:2 K:BB ratio. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hendriks is making a strong impression this spring and could begin the season in the rotation if Scott Baker needs to miss more than one start with a sore elbow.
