Apr 17 2024Shaw signed a minor-league contract with the Angels on Wednesday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He can earn a prorated $1.1 million if he's in the majors, per Fletcher. Shaw allowed five runs (four earned) over four innings for the White Sox this season before getting removed from their 40-man roster and later electing free agency. The 36-year-old reliever will presumably head to Triple-A Salt Lake for now but could get a look when the Angels need a fresh bullpen arm.
Apr 13 2024Shaw elected to become a free agent Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw went unclaimed off waivers after being designated for assignment Friday, and he will exercise his right to refuse an outright assignment in order to become a free agent. The 36-year-old righty posted a 4.53 ERA and 1.37 WHIP across 49.2 innings during his time with the White Sox, though he got off to a slow start with the team this year before being DFA'd, giving up four runs over four frames.
Apr 12 2024Shaw was designated for assignment by the White Sox on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits and four walks over four innings of work to earn a trip off the 40-man roster. The veteran reliever should pass through waivers unclaimed and would have the opportunity to elect free agency if he does.
Mar 27 2024The White Sox selected Shaw's contract from Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw re-signed with the White Sox on a minor-league pact after holding a 4.14 ERA and 40:17 K:BB in 45.2 innings last season and he'll be back on their bullpen to start 2024. The veteran reliever could even find himself in the late-inning mix as manager Pedro Grifol tries to make sense of a patchwork bullpen.
Mar 25 2024Shaw is expected to be included on the White Sox's Opening Day roster, James Fegan of SoxMachine.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw is attending spring training as a non-roster invitee, so the White Sox will still have to clear a spot for him on the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster before he's officially a part of the Opening Day bullpen. The 36-year-old right-hander is heading into his second season in Chicago after posting a 4.14 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 40:17 K:BB in 45.2 innings over his 36 appearances. As the most battle-tested reliever in a White Sox bullpen lacking in experienced arms, Shaw could factor into the mix for saves, though younger pitchers such as Michael Kopech and Jordan Leasure boast more powerful arsenals and fit the closer archetype better.
Feb 21 2024Shaw is a candidate to earn saves for the White Sox this season, Jack Magruder of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw is in camp on a minor-league deal, but he pitched fairly effectively for the White Sox last season by maintaining a 4.14 ERA and 1.23 WHIP with a 40:17 K:BB across 45.2 innings. He also logged four saves and four holds, showing some ability to pitch in high-leverage situations. Shaw's role remains far from certain however, as Chicago's bullpen is wide open, and general manager Chris Getz specifically declined to name a closer early in spring training.
Feb 17 2024Shaw signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox on Saturday and received an invitation to major-league spring training. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw will return to the White Sox after putting up a 4.14 ERA and 1.23 WHIP across 45.2 innings with Chicago last season. The Sox don't have a particularly strong bullpen, making it possible the 36-year-old righty makes the Opening Day roster, but he will still have plenty of competition in camp.
Sep 29 2023Shaw picked up the save in Thursday's 3-1 victory over the Diamondbacks, striking out one over a perfect inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw entered the contest with a two-run lead in the ninth and needed only 11 pitches to retire the side and secure his fourth save of the season. The right-handed reliever has converted his last two save opportunities and has struck out at least one batter in 13 of his last 15 appearances. He carries a 1.08 ERA in September to go along with a 20:6 K:BB.
Sep 23 2023Shaw picked up the save in Saturday's 1-0 victory over the Red Sox. He allowed two hits and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Despite surrendering two singles in the ninth inning, Shaw was able to successfully shut the door on Boston, earning his third save of the season. After 10 consecutive scoreless appearances to start September, the veteran reliever had given up an earned run in each of his previous two outings prior to Saturday. He now owns a 4.65 ERA and 1.30 WHIP across 33 appearances (40.2 innings) on the campaign.
Sep 6 2023Shaw walked one and struck out two in a scoreless and hitless inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 6-4 win over the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw has kept runs off the board in seven of his last eight outings, and five of those efforts have seen him get more than three outs. The right-hander got the ninth inning after Gregory Santos earned a hold after relieving Aaron Bummer in the eighth inning. Shaw has a 5.46 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 27:11 K:BB through 31.1 innings this season while adding two saves and two holds. He's not the top late-inning option, but Shaw is getting some looks late in the White Sox's disappointing season.
Aug 8 2023Shaw earned a save against the Yankees on Monday, allowing one hit and striking out four batters over two scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw entered in the top of the eighth inning with Chicago up 2-1, and he dominated by striking out the side on 13 pitches. The White Sox scored three times in the bottom of the frame, so manager Pedro Grifol elected to allow the right-hander the opportunity to close things out. Shaw did so without much trouble, allowing a leadoff double to Aaron Judge in the ninth but retiring the next three batters. It was the veteran reliever's first save of the campaign and 16th of his career, but he doesn't figure to get many more chances moving forward despite an unsettled closer situation since Liam Hendriks was lost for the season with an elbow injury and Kendall Graveman and Reynaldo Lopez were both traded at the deadline.
Jul 29 2023Shaw's contract was selected from Triple-A Charlotte on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 35-year-old reliever had a 4.94 ERA in 23.2 innings at Triple-A and a 9.39 ERA in 7.2 innings in the big leagues earlier this year. Shaw will work in low-leverage situations.
Jul 24 2023Shaw was sent outright to Triple-A Charlotte on Monday, per the MLB's transactions log. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw was designated for assignment by the White Sox on Saturday, and after failing to draw any interest from around the league, he'll end up in Charlotte. He owns a 4.03 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with 24 strikeouts in 21 appearances this season at Triple-A (22.1 innings).
Jul 22 2023Shaw was designated for assignment Saturday, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw loses his spot with Joe Kelly ready to return from the injured list. The 35-year-old reliever allowed eight runs over 7.2 relief innings during his brief time with the White Sox.
Jul 2 2023The White Sox selected Shaw's contract from Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw is a veteran of 753 career regular-season appearances, but he has yet to pitch at the big-league level in 2023 after he was forced to settle for a minor-league deal with the White Sox this offseason coming off a poor season with the Guardians. The 35-year-old right-hander has pitched respectably at Charlotte this season, logging a 4.03 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 24:14 K:BB in 22.1 innings. Look for the White Sox to limit his usage to lower-leverage spots initially, but he could eventually work his way into a setup role if he excels early on.
Apr 28 2023Shaw signed a minor-league contract Friday with the White Sox, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw was released by the White Sox in late March after failing to claim a spot on the Opening Day roster, but he'll get another shot with the organization after going unsigned for a full month. The veteran reliever will first head to the club's spring training complex in Arizona before eventually joining up with Triple-A Charlotte.
Mar 26 2023Shaw was released by the White Sox on Sunday, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander was informed earlier Sunday he didn't make Chicago's Opening Day roster, so it's no surprise to see him return to free agency. Shaw had 5.40 ERA over 60 appearances last year but pitched solid during spring training with one earned run allowed over 8.1 frames.
Feb 22 2023Shaw agreed Wednesday with the White Sox on a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to MLB spring training, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 35-year-old right-hander brings a wealth of experience to the table and logged an MLB-leading 81 relief appearances for Cleveland as recently as 2021, but he took a major step back in his final season with the Guardians. Over 58.1 innings in the big leagues, Shaw mustered a 5.40 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 52:26 K:BB before the Guardians removed him from the 40-man roster in the last week of the regular season. He'll need to show improved form in spring training in order to secure a spot in the White Sox's Opening Day bullpen.
Oct 1 2022Shaw was designated for assignment by the Guardians on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw made 60 appearances (two starts) for Cleveland in 2022 and converted his lone save chance while picking up seven holds. However, he served mainly as a middle reliever and posted a 5.40 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 58.1 innings. It's not yet clear whether he'll remain in the organization if he goes unclaimed on waivers.
Aug 18 2022Shaw (6-2) retired the only batter he faced to earn the win Wednesday over the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw ended a threat after James Karinchak left with runners on the corners and two out. The Guardians' offense took over from there, posting a six-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Shaw his third win in his last 11 outings. The veteran reliever has allowed eight runs across 14.1 innings in that span, and for the season, he owns a 5.36 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, 38:21 K:BB, one save and six holds through 43.2 frames.
Aug 11 2022Shaw struck out two and threw a scoreless 10th inning to earn the save Thursday against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Emmanuel Clase was unavailable to pitch after taking the mound in four of Cleveland's last five games. That gave Shaw the chance to earn his first save of the season. Shaw has a 5.10 ERA across 42.1 innings this season and has surrendered nine earned runs across his last 14 frames.
Jul 31 2022Shaw allowed two runs on two hits and three walks with one strikeout in two innings against the Rays on Sunday. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw has made his last two appearances as an opener ahead of Kirk McCarty, to mixed results. Shaw's given up a pair of runs in each of his last three outings and continues to struggle through the middle part of the season. The right-hander owns a 5.63 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 31:20 K:BB through 38.1 innings in 41 appearances. If he continues to function as an opener going forward, the role will reduce his chances of picking up wins and holds.
Jul 26 2022Shaw pitched 2.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out two in Tuesday's win over the Red Sox. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw made his first career "start" Tuesday, serving as an opener for primary pitcher Kirk McCarty. The right-hander pitched two clean innings before allowing three runners to reach base and a run to score while registering one out in the third frame and getting replaced on the mound. Another run he was responsible for would come around to score after he exited the contest. Shaw has now allowed four runs on four hit and three walks over four frames his last two appearances. Since the beginning of July, the 34-year-old has seen his ERA rise from 5.11 to 5.45 over 36.1 innings in 40 appearances in 2022.
Jul 23 2022Shaw (4-2) took the loss in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader versus the White Sox. He allowed two runs on a hit and two walks with one strikeout in 1.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw was responsible for both runners aboard in the eighth inning, and Nick Sandlin took a blown save when he allowed them to score on an AJ Pollock two-run single. This was the fourth time in Shaw's last 10 appearances that he's allowed multiple runs. He now has a 5.29 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 28:16 K:BB with four holds through 34 innings in 39 appearances.
Jul 15 2022Shaw (4-1) allowed one hit across two scoreless innings to pick up the win Friday over the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw entered Friday having allowed five runs (four earned) in his last 3.2 innings. He was able to keep the Guardians' deficit to one run, and they pulled ahead in the bottom of the seventh to put the veteran reliever in line for the win. This was Shaw's first win since June 15, and he's struggled by allowing at least a run in six of his last nine appearances. The right-hander has a 5.17 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 26:14 K:BB while adding four holds in 31.1 innings in 37 outings this season. Given his recent struggles, he'll likely continue to see middle-relief assignments.
Jun 24 2022Shaw (3-1) allowed three runs on two hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning, taking the loss Friday versus the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw worked in the seventh inning, but he allowed a two-run home run to Christian Arroyo and then put J.D. Martinez on base with a two-out single. Anthony Gose allowed the inherited runner to score, and the Guardians were unable to get Shaw off the hook as the veteran reliever took his first loss of the season. He's allowed four runs in his last three appearances since the end of his 8.2-inning scoreless streak. The 34-year-old has a 4.70 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 18:12 K:BB across 23 innings overall, and he's added four holds in 30 appearances. Given his recent shakiness, he could start to relinquish some of the high-leverage opportunities he'd earned earlier in the month.
Jun 15 2022Shaw (3-0) earned the win Wednesday over the Rockies. He struck out one in a perfect inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw pitched in the eighth inning, but he was deemed the most effective of four Guardians relievers between starter Konnor Pilkington and closer Emmanuel Clase. This was Shaw's second win in as many outings after he picked up just one victory in the first two months of the campaign. He's at a 3.38 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 18:10 K:BB across 21.1 innings in 27 appearances overall. The 34-year-old extended his scoreless streak to 8.2 innings, as he's been in a groove lately.
Jun 12 2022Shaw has not allowed a run in his last eight appearances spanning 6.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In that stretch, he's logged a 9:4 K:BB while allowing four hits. Shaw has just three holds on the year and none since May 5, so he's not in the mix for much high-leverage work. He's done well in a less glamorous role, posting a 3.72 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 16:9 K:BB across 19.1 innings overall, serving as a trusty veteran in a bullpen not lacking for solid pitching. The Guardians' 2.98 bullpen ERA as a team ranks fourth-best in the majors.
May 26 2022Shaw allowed a hit and struck out three in a scoreless inning during Wednesday's 2-1 loss to the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw's season numbers are skewed by one bad outing -- he allowed five runs without recording an out May 13 versus the White Sox. He's only allowed three other runs in the rest of his 17 appearances this season, but that one meltdown puts him at a 5.27 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 10:5 K:BB across 13.2 innings. The 34-year-old right-hander has added a 1-0 record and three holds, though he's not likely to see save chances all that frequently.
May 8 2022Shaw (1-0) pitched a perfect inning to earn the win Sunday versus the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw kept the Guardians within a run in the eighth inning, and they took the lead in the bottom half of the frame. The 34-year-old reliever has been solid this year, posting a 1.80 ERA and 1.10 WHIP across 10 innings in 13 appearances. He's yet to allow a home run after surrendering 10 long balls in 81 appearances last season. Shaw has added three holds, though it's unlikely he'll challenge Emmanuel Clase for the closer job.
Apr 21 2022Shaw pitched a perfect inning in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw worked the seventh inning after starter Shane Bieber tossed six innings of one-run ball. This was the first time in five outings Shaw has been tasked with a full inning of work, and he's allowed just one run, two hits and three walks with two strikeouts across 2.2 innings this season. In 2021, he picked up a 6-7 record, 20 holds, two saves and six blown saves, but the 34-year-old's not currently part of the Guardians' late-inning mix.
Sep 27 2021Shaw recorded a perfect inning and earned a hold in Monday's 8-3 win over Kansas City. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This is the fifth season in which Shaw has picked up 20 holds, although it's his first such campaign since 2017. The right-hander has pitched to a 3.48 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 69:36 K:BB across 75 innings this season, often working in high-leverage spots. While he's had some struggles in September, he's now pitched 3.2 consecutive scoreless innings in his last four games.
Sep 18 2021Shaw allowed a run on two hits and struck out one in one inning during Saturday's 11-3 win over the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander has given up six runs across 10.1 innings with a 7:4 K:BB in nine appearances in September. Entering the month, he had a 3.30 ERA, but it's ticked up to 3.58 after this recent run of inconsistency in which he's allowed runs in four of nine appearances. Shaw has posted a 1.41 WHIP and 69:36 K:BB with a 6-7 record, two saves, 18 holds and five blown saves through 72 appearances, but he's unlikely to serve as much more than a setup man to closer Emmanuel Clase.
Sep 4 2021Shaw (6-7) allowed one run on one hit and one walk through 1.1 innings, taking the loss in Saturday's 4-3 defeat to the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw worked a snappy eighth inning before conceding a base hit to Travis Shaw (unrelated) who would eventually come around to score the winning run for Boston. While this outing does break the right-hander's streak of four straight scoreless appearances, there's no sign that Cleveland will be removing high leverage duty from his plate anytime soon.
Aug 29 2021Shaw (6-6) pitched a perfect inning and earned the win Sunday versus Boston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander worked in the eighth inning, and Cleveland rallied ahead after Shaw kept the deficit to one run. The 33-year-old has yielded five runs in 13.1 innings in August, but he's kept a scoreless line in 13 of his 15 appearances this month. For the season, he owns a 3.30 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 62:32 K:BB in 60 innings. Shaw has also notched two saves and 17 holds, and he could become the setup man to closer Emmanuel Clase after James Karinchak was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Saturday.
Aug 15 2021Shaw (5-6) was tagged with the loss in relief Saturday against the Tigers after allowing two runs on three hits and a walk across one-third of an inning, fanning one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw pitched the eighth but wasn't effective, as he loaded the bases and gave up two runs before recording an out. This woeful performance ended a streak of seven straight scoreless outings for the right-hander.
Aug 9 2021Shaw (5-5) allowed a hit and struck out one in a scoreless inning to earn the win Sunday versus Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander worked the seventh inning, and he was the beneficiary of Cleveland pulling ahead on a two-run blast by Bradley Zimmer in the home half of the inning. Shaw has allowed just one hit, one walk and a hit batter in his last four innings, adding a pair of wins in that span. He's posted a 3.02 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 57:30 K:BB through 50.2 innings, while his two saves and 14 holds show that he's trusted in high-leverage situations.
Aug 2 2021Shaw (4-5) allowed a walk and struck out two in a scoreless inning to earn the win in Monday's game versus Toronto. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 33-year-old did his job in the ninth inning, keeping the game tied before Cleveland's offense rallied for three runs in the top of the 10th. Shaw had allowed six runs (four earned) in his previous 5.1 innings, so it was encouraging to see him put in a strong appearance. He owns a 3.21 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 55:30 K:BB across 47.2 innings this season. The right-hander remains a late-inning option for Cleveland despite his troubling lack of control. He's collected 14 holds and a pair of saves.
Jul 27 2021Shaw (3-5) allowed two runs on three hits in one inning, taking the loss versus St. Louis on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a quality start from Cal Quantrill, Shaw made a mess in the seventh inning by allowing a two-run home run to Paul DeJong. That was enough for the reliever to take his second loss in his last three outings. Shaw has allowed five home runs in 45.1 innings this year while pitching to a 3.18 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 53:29 K:BB. He's added two saves, four blown saves and 14 holds in 46 appearances.
Jul 22 2021Shaw (3-4) allowed an unearned run on two hits in one inning, taking the loss versus Tampa Bay on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw may have been lucky to limit the damage to one run, but Cleveland wasn't able to even the score in its half of the 10th inning. The 33-year-old has had an adventurous last few outings, racking up one save, two holds, a blown save, a win and a loss in his last five appearances. He owns a 2.91 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 53:29 K:BB through 43.1 innings. The right-hander could see more high-leverage work if James Karinchak and Emmanuel Clase continue to struggle as they have for much of July.
Jul 21 2021Shaw (3-3) allowed one earned run on two hits while striking out one across one inning, getting the win over the Astros on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw entered the sixth inning with a two-run lead and a runner on second. He allowed a double to Jose Altuve and surrendered another single in the inning to tie the game. Cleveland took the lead back in the seventh to give Shaw the win. The 33-year-old allowed a run for just the third time over his last 13 appearances. During that stretch, he has a 1.91 ERA and 18 strikeouts over 14.1 innings. This season, he has a 2.98 ERA and a 11.3 K/9 in 42.1 innings.
Jul 18 2021Shaw fired a perfect ninth inning, striking out one to earn the save in the win over the Athletics on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw retired the side in the ninth inning and struck out Mitch Moreland to end the game. He doesn't normally receive save opportunities, but Emmanuel Clase and James Karinchak were unavailable after pitching the previous two games. Shaw has a 1.37 ERA over 13.1 innings and 17 strikeouts over his last 12 appearances. For the season, he has a 2.83 ERA and a 11.3 K/9 in 41.1 innings. He is 2-for-4 in save opportunities.
Jul 1 2021Shaw (2-3) took the loss in Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader versus Detroit. He allowed a run on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts in one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a back-and-forth game for four innings before Detroit took control in the fifth. Shaw's loss came on the RBI single he surrendered to Harold Castro. The right-hander had a shaky June, posting a 1-3 record, two blown saves, four holds and a 6.94 ERA across 11.2 innings. He had only given up three runs across 20.2 innings in the first two months of the season. With little chance of unseating James Karinchak or Emmanuel Clase for save chances, Shaw's usefulness in fantasy remains limited.
Jun 21 2021Shaw (2-2) allowed a hit and struck out two over 1.1 innings to earn the win versus the Cubs on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Starter Aaron Civale (finger) left the game with two outs in the fifth inning, making him ineligible for the win. Shaw replaced him in the contest, and he picked up his second win of the year. It was a good bounce-back outing for Shaw, who was rocked for four runs on a hit and three walks while failing to record an out Saturday versus Pittsburgh. The veteran reliever has a 3.38 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 37:24 K:BB across 29.1 innings. He's also logged a save and 10 holds, so he's often seen high-leverage work in 2021.
Jun 20 2021Shaw (1-2) was tagged with the loss Saturday against the Pirates after allowing four runs on one hit and three walks. He didn't record an out before being lifted. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw had his worst performance of the season Saturday, as he was unable to retire any of the four batters he faced before being lifted. He walked Ben Gamel and Kevin Newman before allowing a three-run shot to Michael Perez, and then he walked Ka'ai Tom before departing the contest. The right-hander has allowed at least one run in three straight appearances and his ERA has ballooned up to 3.54 as a result.
Jun 16 2021Shaw gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits and struck out three in one inning to earn a hold in Wednesday's 8-7 win over Baltimore. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw allowed just three runs over 20.2 innings in the first two months of the season. He's already given up five runs (four earned) across 7.1 innings in June. The right-hander nearly gave up the lead in the seventh inning Wednesday, but he was able to strike out Pedro Severino and Anthony Santander (ankle) for the final two outs with two runners aboard. For the year, Shaw has a 2.25 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 35:21 K:BB across 28 innings, but his performance is trending in the wrong direction. He'll need to work on trimming down his walk rate of 6.8 BB/9 to have more effective performances.
Jun 4 2021Shaw (1-1) allowed two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out one in one inning to take the loss against the Orioles on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw had tossed 9.1 scoreless innings across his last 11 relief appearances, but he was slightly less effective Friday and was charged with his first loss of the season. The right-hander has now posted a 1.99 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 22.2 innings across 24 appearances in 2021.
May 27 2021Shaw allowed a hit and a walk with one strikeout in a scoreless inning to earn a hold in Thursday's 5-2 win over Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw handled the eighth inning and worked around a couple of baserunners to preserve Cleveland's lead. The 33-year-old remains a solid option out of the bullpen with a 1.35 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 23:14 K:BB across 20 innings. He's notched seven holds, a save and a win in 21 outings, although the closer job appears to be shared between James Karinchak and Emmanuel Clase.
May 19 2021Shaw pitched a perfect eighth inning with two strikeouts to earn a hold in Tuesday's 6-5 win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw relieved starter Zach Plesac and protected a one-run lead before James Karinchak entered to close it out. The 33-year-old Shaw has emerged as an effective late-inning option with a 1.69 ERA and 0.88 WHIP. He's only allowed four hits in 16 innings, leading to an unsustainable BABIP of .091 -- eventually, some additional hits are bound to get through Cleveland's defense. He's logged five holds, a save and a win.
May 13 2021Shaw recorded the final out of Thursday's 4-2 win against Seattle via strikeout to record the save. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was a high-leverage situation as Shaw entered with the bases loaded and two out but dispatched Luis Torrens on four pitches to complete the save. Shaw is one of manager Terry Francona's go-to relievers, evidenced by a superb 1.93 ERA, but don't expect abundant saves with Emmanuel Clase and James Karinchak being the main guys for the ninth inning.
May 2 2021Shaw pitched 1.1 perfect innings with a strikeout to earn a hold in Sunday's 5-0 win over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw successfully protected Cleveland's 2-0 lead, and the offense added three more runs in the top of the seventh inning. The 33-year-old reliever has become an integral part of the bullpen this season. He has a tiny 0.79 ERA and 0.71 WHIP across 11.1 innings, and he's earned four holds in 11 outings.
Apr 30 2021Shaw struck out one in a perfect seventh inning to earn a hold in Friday's 5-3 win over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw was the first reliever up after Shane Bieber lasted six innings in the start. The 33-year-old Shaw needed just eight pitches to earn his third hold of the season in 10 outings. He's been solid so far with a 0.90 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 11:6 K:BB across 10 innings.
Apr 17 2021Shaw pitched a scoreless inning with one walk and one strikeout to earn a hold in Saturday's 3-2 extra-inning loss to the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw was the first reliever up after starter Triston McKenzie. The 33-year-old Shaw was able to get through the sixth inning with virtually no trouble. He's done well so far with a 1.50 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and 7:3 K:BB across six innings. The right-hander is likely to see most of his work in the middle innings.
Apr 12 2021Shaw pitched a perfect inning in Monday's 4-3 loss to the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw induced three groundouts in the eighth inning to preserve a 3-3 tie. The 33-year-old right-hander is off to a solid start with a 2.25 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and four strikeouts across four innings. Shaw is expected to see work in the middle innings more often that not, although he does have a hold to his credit in 2021.
Mar 24 2021Cleveland informed Shaw on Wednesday that he made the Opening Day roster, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 33-year-old signed as a non-roster invitee in early February but will now be added to the big-league roster after allowing three runs with a 13:5 K:BB over 9.2 innings during spring training. Shaw's could work his way into a high-leverage role if he continues to put up similar numbers in the regular season.
Feb 3 2021Shaw signed a minor-league deal with the Indians on Tuesday that includes an invitation to big-league camp. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander had a strong five-year career in Cleveland before departing after the 2017 season, but he has a 6.17 ERA in 137 games over the past three years. Shaw will need a strong showing in spring training to have a chance of cracking the Opening Day roster.
Aug 15 2020Shaw was designated for assignment by the Mariners on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw hasn't been very effective this season as he's allowed 12 runs on 13 hits and six walks over six innings. He was shuffled between alternate camp and the major-league roster, but he'll now lose his spot on the 40-man roster. Southpaw Ljay Newsome's contract was selected by the Mariners in a corresponding move Saturday.
Aug 10 2020Shaw was recalled from the Mariners' alternate training site Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After being sent to alternate camp Thursday, Shaw will rejoin the major-league bullpen to take the place of Carl Edwards (forearm) on the active roster for now. Shaw struggled mightily in his last three major-league appearances before being optioned, allowing 10 runs over 2.1 innings during that time. Given his lack of production this year, he'll likely pitch in lower-leverage situations.
Aug 6 2020The Mariners optioned Shaw to their alternate training site Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Seattle signed Shaw ahead of Opening Day with the hope that he might rebound after he struggled the past two years while pitching at altitude in Colorado, but the veteran right-hander was a disaster through his first four games of the bullpen. In just 3.1 innings, Shaw gave up 10 runs on 10 hits and four walks while striking out just one. Though he'll retain a spot on the 40-man roster, Shaw's poor results thus far could make the Mariners reluctant to call him up anytime soon.
Jul 20 2020Shaw will sign with the Mariners on Monday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw was released by the Rockies on Friday, but he'll quickly find a home in Seattle ahead of the regular season. The right-hander struggled out of the bullpen over the past two seasons and should play a low-leverage role as he looks to bounce back during the abbreviated 2020 season.
Jul 17 2020Shaw was waived by the Rockies on Friday and will be released, Kyle Newman of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw is still owed $9 million by the Rockies, but the team won't wind up getting anything in exchange for that money. The veteran righty was given $27 million guaranteed by Colorado back in December of 2017 but proceeded to record ERAs of 5.93 and 5.38 in his first two seasons with the team after previously posting an ERA no worse than 3.52.
Apr 2 2020Shaw has fallen in the Rockies bullpen hierarchy and was not even a lock to make the 26-man roster when camp was suspended, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The idea of him being designated for assignment and/or released was more plausible early in camp, but he logged three solid outings in a row before the shutdown. Even though he finished strong, Shaw finished the spring with a 10.38 ERA in 4.1 innings (five appearances). He had a 5.38 ERA in 2019 after logging a 5.93 ERA in 2018. The Rockies owe him $9 million for 2020 and will likely buy him out for $2 million in 2021. Saunders notes that Shaw has been passed by Scott Oberg, Carlos Estevez and Jairo Diaz among Colorado's setup men.
Sep 25 2019Shaw earned his first save of the season after tossing a perfect frame in the bottom of the 16th in Tuesday's 8-5 win over the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rockies had already used 10 relievers heading into the 16th, so Shaw benefited from the save chance by virtue of being one of the few arms available in the bullpen. Shaw's flawless showing Tuesday isn't enough to compensate for an otherwise unremarkable 2019 campaign, during which he's posted a 5.37 ERA and 1.36 WHIP across 70.1 innings.
Jul 31 2019Shaw worked around a walk and struck out the other six batters he faced during two scoreless innings of relief in Tuesday's 9-4 loss to the Dodgers.
May 9 2019Shaw (2-0) picked up the win against the Giants on Thursday, despite a rough relief outing that saw him give up three earned runs on one hit in Colorado's eventual 12-11 victory. He struck out two and walked two.Subscribe now<\/a> to instantly reveal our take on this news.
Jul 11 2018Shaw (calf) was reinstated from the 10-day disabled list Wednesday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.Shaw will be available out of the bullpen against the Diamondbacks after appearing in a pair of rehab outings with Triple-A Albuquerque in recent days. In a corresponding move, the Rockies optioned Jerry Vasto back to the minors.
Jul 4 2018Shaw (calf) will make rehab appearances Friday and Sunday for Triple-A Albuquerque, Nick Groke of The Athletic Denver reports.Shaw struggled to a 7.57 ERA prior to going down with a calf strain in late June. If he ends up needing just the pair of rehab appearances, he could be lined up to return Tuesday for the start of next week's mid-week series against Arizona.
Jun 24 2018Shaw was placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday with a right calf strain.Shaw has struggled recently, posting a 12.83 ERA in his last 16 appearances (with an additional six unearned runs not accounted for in that figure). He's walked more batters (nine) than he's struck out (eight) over that stretch. Yency Almonte was promoted from Triple-A Albuquerque to take his place in the bullpen.
May 23 2018Shaw (1-3) allowed three runs on three hits over one inning while taking the loss Tuesday against the Dodgers.Shaw came on in the sixth inning tasked to hold a 3-2 lead, but after a single and groundout he allowed back-to-back home runs and was served with the loss and blown save for his second appearance in a row. It's been a bumpy road for the 30-year-old this season, who now has a 5.92 ERA and 1.56 WHIP through 24.1 innings.
Mar 29 2018Shaw concluded spring training with a 9.00 ERA and a 2.33 WHIP in six innings pitched.Much of the damage done to the veteran's stat line came courtesy of the home run ball, as he served up four of them in his limited spring action. One silver lining to his rough spring were the nine strikeouts he collected in that span. Overall, it doesn't seem like Shaw's standing in the bullpen is impacted by these struggles since the Rockies tend to focus more on individual adjustments rather than the results during the spring. The 30-year-old appears to still be in line for a prominent late-inning role in the Colorado bullpen.
Dec 12 2017Shaw has agreed to sign with the Rockies, Jon Heyman of FanRagSports.com reports. In seven seasons Shaw has posted a 3.13 ERA, 2.64 K:BB, and 8.0 K/9 across 446.1 innings. The 30-year-old has also impressed with his durability, as he has never seen the disabled list in his career. He worked mainly in a setup/middle relief role a year ago, and it would seem likely he will do the same in his new surroundings, unless the Rockies are not able to land another reliever.
Sep 26 2017Shaw (4-6) was tagged with the loss against Minnesota on Tuesday after giving up a three-run homer to Brian Dozier in the eighth inning. He did record a pair of strikeouts, but Shaw put the ducks on the pond for Dozier and then gave up the long ball, leaving him with a 3.55 ERA and 1.21 WHIP -- not exactly spectacular bullpen numbers, but not altogether dissimilar to what he put up last season. Shaw hasn't offered his fantasy owners many surprises, collecting 20-plus holds for the fourth consecutive season in a setup role behind Cody Allen.
Sep 21 2017Shaw worked two perfect innings Wednesday while striking out three to record his third save of the season in a 6-5 win over the Angels.Cody Allen and Andrew Miller had both pitched the night before, so manager Terry Francona elected to let Shaw finish the job after he squelched a potential Angels rally in the eighth inning, leaving the tying run stranded at first base. The righty's now thrown 50 pitches over the last two games, so expect him to get a few days off before he's summoned from the bullpen again.
Sep 13 2017Shaw pitched the eighth inning Wednesday, allowing a hit and striking out one Tiger en route to his 22nd hold of the season. The setup man seemed well on his way to a career-worst campaign when August opened, but Shaw has turned things around over the past month and a half. Through his last 19 appearances (18.2 innings), the 29-year-old owns a 2.41 ERA and 24:3 BB:K while converting all 10 of his hold opportunities.
Aug 8 2017Shaw, who is having one of his worst seasons in years, has been plagued by a major drop off in the effectiveness of his slider, SB Nation reports. Now in his seventh MLB season, Shaw owns a career-high 3.51 ERA and is on pace to notch fewer than 20 holds for the first time since 2013. Last year, the setup man owned a career-best 25.1 percent strikeout rate in large part because he induced swinging strikes on 20.6 percent of his sliders. This year, that number is down to 10.8 percent. Shaw's slider is missing the late break that made the pitch so effective in recent campaigns, and without that good movement, he's simply not as useful as he once was in deep formats.
Aug 1 2017Manager Terry Francona said the acquisition of Joe Smith will allow the skipper to take away some outings from Shaw in hopes of keeping the latter fresh, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.Francona may be happy to lighten the load on Shaw, who's on pace to log a career high for innings pitched, but the news certainly isn't great for fantasy owners. The 29-year-old's high-leverage role has him in line to approach 20 holds while nabbing a handful of wins this year.
Jul 22 2017Shaw (3-4) retired a single batter to collect his third win of the season during Saturday's victory over the Blue Jays.Shaw entered the game and retired Kevin Pillar in the top of the 10th inning, and then Francisco Lindor hit a solo homer in the bottom of the frame to seal the win. With a 2.76 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and a 7.5 K/9, Shaw is a serviceable fantasy asset in deep leagues, but if closer Cody Allen were ever bumped from his job, Andrew Miller would likely be next in line for saves and not Shaw.
Jul 19 2017Shaw (2-4) was charged with his second blown save of the year, and took the loss Wednesday after allowing two runs on a pair of hits. He retired two batters via strikeout. After an error by first baseman Carlos Santana, the reliever was tagged for a two-run double by Buster Posey that propelled the Giants to a 5-4 victory. In six July games, Shaw has surrendered six runs on eight hits and two walks, raising his ERA more than a full point during the month.
Jul 13 2017Shaw wrapped up his first half of 2017 with a 2.81 ERA, 11 holds and two saves over 42 games.Since becoming an Indian in 2013, Shaw has made more appearances (341) than any other MLB reliever. He's on pace to log 20-plus holds for a fourth consecutive season, making him roster-worthy in deeper leagues that reward such performances. However, Shaw's 7.8 K/9 is well below last year's 9.3 mark, and the 29-year-old's 3.89 BB/9 is a career worst.
Jun 21 2017Shaw collected his second save of the season after retiring a single batter in the ninth inning of Wednesday's win over Baltimore.Shaw has been pitching in high-leverage situations all season, and he entered Wednesday's game after Dan Otero pitched himself and the team into trouble. Cody Allen has a firm grasp on the Cleveland closer job, and Andrew Miller is likely also ahead of Shaw for save opportunities, so it's probably wise not to overreact to Shaw notching Wednesday's save.
Jun 7 2017Shaw threw a wild pitch, allowed a single and struck out the only hitter he retired Tuesday in Colorado. It was quite an eventful outing for Shaw in a meaningless 11-3 ballgame. His wild pitch allowed Charlie Blackmon to take third base before DJ LeMahieu recorded an RBI single that was charged to Boone Logan. Shaw hasn't been quite right lately, as the right-hander has yielded four runs on seven hits over his last 5.2 innings. Regardless, the 29-year-old's ERA still sits at a career-best 2.42 through 26 contests in 2017.
May 16 2017Shaw logged a pair of walks and strikeouts over an inning of work Monday en route to his seventh hold of the season.Shaw is off to a fine start in 2017, appearing in a team-high 17 games while managing an admirable 2.00 ERA. He ranks second among Tribe relievers in innings (18), and the right-hander has stranded four of the five runners he's inherited during the campaign. Shaw's 1.6 K/BB is way outside the norm for the 28-year-old, but his 8.0 K/9 is on par with his career average. He's also picked up a save and one win thus far.
Apr 21 2017Shaw faced just two batters, walking one and striking out the other, en route to his third hold of the season Thursday in Minnesota.Albeit early in the campaign, Shaw hasn't been overly impressive through his first eight games. His 6.1 percent strikeout rate and 63.6 percent strand rate are well off the marks he's posted in previous campaigns. However, Shaw's .338 BABIP is a stroke of bad luck, and owners can expect the numbers to even themselves out in due time.
Apr 18 2017Shaw dealt a clean seventh inning in Monday's win over the Twins en route to his second hold of 2017.Shaw's 11-pitch appearance was a nice rebound from Sunday's ugly effort (two runs on three hits in one inning). Coming into the contest versus the Twins, the 29-year-old had surrendered four runs on seven hits and two walks in his previous four innings, so Monday's effort was a calming event for Shaw's owners.
Apr 11 2017Shaw picked up the win by recording the final two outs, one via strikeout, in Tuesday's 10-inning victory over the White Sox.The 29-year-old has now recorded a win, save and hold through his first four appearances of 2017. It's a much better start for Shaw than last season's nine runs on eight hits allowed through four games. It's extremely early, but he's been much more efficient in the early goings of the campaign than he was a year ago.
Apr 5 2017Shaw pitched a spotless ninth with a strikeout for his first save of the year Wednesday in Texas.Fresh off picking up a hold Tuesday, Shaw got right back out there in the ninth inning Wednesday because Cody Allen and Andrew Miller had both pitched Monday and Tuesday. He's the clear third option for saves in the Cleveland bullpen, which means Shaw won't record too many unless injuries strike both Allen and Miller. He's a quality source of holds, though.
Apr 5 2017Shaw allowed one hit and recorded three outs on Tuesday against the Rangers to earn his first hold of the season. The reliever wasted no time picking up where he left off in 2016, a season in which he notched a career-high 25 holds. Over the past three years, Shaw's 72 holds is good for fifth-best in MLB during that span. He'll continue to see a ton of opportunities while producing at the level fans have become accustomed to seeing.
Mar 24 2017Shaw retired two hitters, one via strikeout, in Thursday' exhibition contest against the Rockies.Shaw's been smacked around a bit this spring (.387 BAA) and has failed to record a clean inning over his seven appearances. He's a bit behind as manager Terry Francona took a reserved approach with the right-hander due to this year's extended spring training schedule. Look for last season's league-leader in appearances (75) to ramp up his game in the final days of camp.
Mar 2 2017Shaw completed a simulated game Thursday morning with no issues, Jordan Bastian reports.Shaw has yet to appear in a game this spring as the team eases him into action. With an extra week of spring training due to the World Baseball Classic, Shaw will have plenty of time to log Cactus League innings. The 29-year-old has notched MLB's fifth-most holds (72) over the past three seasons and once again will handle a hefty workload as the Tribe's go-to seventh-inning reliever.
Feb 24 2017Shaw has been throwing a football to help reinforce his mechanics for his cutter, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.Over the past two seasons, Shaw has completely ditched any type of fastball other than his cutter. According to FanGraphs, he threw it on a career-high 81.5 percent of his pitches (by far the most of any pitcher in MLB) last year with an average velocity of 93.4 mph. The Indians' reliever appeared in 75 games last season and his career-high 25 holds left him just three shy of tying for the AL lead in that category. Shaw is in line for another hefty workload in 2017, and owners can expect fantasy-worthy numbers similar to those he's put up over the past three seasons in Cleveland.
Jan 13 2017Shaw and the Indians avoided arbitration on Friday with a $4.6 million deal, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports.Shaw was a valuable member of the daunting Cleveland bullpen in 2016, leading the league in appearances with 75 while posting a strong 3.24 ERA. This should be his final round of arbitration, with the 29-year-old likely hitting free agency next offseason.
Aug 31 2016Shaw struck out the lone Twin he faced Wednesday for his first save of the season.Cody Allen had pitched 1.2 innings the night before and Andrew Miller had tossed three innings in the last two days, so the Indians had little inclination to use their two-headed closing monster entering the ninth inning with a five-run lead. Instead, 27-year-old rookie Perci Garner made his MLB debut as well as a mess on the bases. Shaw entered the game with the bases loaded and two out -- so the tying run was on deck, making it a save situation -- and promptly threw a wild pitch, allowing a run to score, but struck out Brian Dozier to end the game. As the top setup man behind Allen and Miller, fantasy owners should count on him for holds, not saves.
Aug 2 2016Shaw allowed four runs over 14.1 innings with 13 strikeouts and nine walks during July. All of those runs came on July 18 against Kansas City. Take out that showing and Shaw has not allowed a run in his last 19 innings as the setup man for the Indians. Although the addition of Andrew Miller could hinder Shaw's hold opportunities moving forward this season.
Jun 15 2016Shaw will remain the Indians' set-up man despite recent struggles according to manager Terry Francona, Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com reports.Shaw has allowed at least one earned run in each of his last three appearances, and a home run in two of those three, ballooning his ERA to 5.68 on the year. He will continue to get hold opportunities, but he has not been sharp as of late and would only be worth a start in deep leagues.
May 24 2016Shaw struck out one batter while throwing a scoreless inning in Monday's victory over the White Sox.After his latest outing, Shaw's ERA continued to fall and is now at 5.21 for the 2016 campaign. The bulk of that damage came from a three game span where he gave up nine runs in just 2.1 innings. In the 17 games (15.2 innings) following, he's posted a 1.15 ERA and 0.89 WHIP. His steady improvement is promising, as Shaw is coming off his second straight season with an ERA below 3.00.
Apr 23 2016Shaw pitched a shutout inning while striking out two against Detroit on Friday.Shaw self-combusted twice this season which has led to a bloated 14.29 ERA through 5.2 innings of action. Besides those two outings, the right-hander has faired quite well, allowing two hits while striking out six in 4.1 scoreless innings. If Shaw can limit the home runs, he should be able to settle down and become a more reliable reliever, especially with a great strikeout rate early on this season.
Feb 18 2016Shaw is expected to have a regular spring training workload, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. This announcement came after the Indians felt they had been too conservative with their relievers in 2015 spring training. Shaw had a 2.95 ERA over 64 innings pitched in 2015 and is likely to remain the setup man for Cleveland in 2016.
Jan 14 2016Shaw agreed to a one-year deal worth $2.75 million with the Indians on Thursday, avoiding arbitration, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports.Shaw has established himself as the Indians' primary setup man in recent years, making 77 eighth inning appearances over the last two seasons. However, with Cody Allen firmly in place as the team's closer, Shaw's value is capped in leagues that don't factor for holds.
Jul 7 2015Shaw picked up the save in a 2-0 victory with closer Cody Allen unavailable due to a stiff back.Allen is expected back Wednesday but Shaw would be next in line to close out games for the Indians if Allen were unavailable.
Jun 18 2015Shaw recorded the final four outs -- including a strikeout -- for his first save Thursday against the Cubs.Indians closer Cody Allen was called upon to work out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth after a rain delay, so Shaw received the save opportunity Thursday. He converted it without allowing a single base runner, but it is unlikely that Shaw will see many more save chances. The Indians will continue to use Allen as their closer, and Shaw should return to his role as a set up man.
May 4 2015Shaw converted his fifth hold of the season in Sunday's win over the Blue Jays, getting the last two outs of the sixth inning. It was interesting to see Shaw come in so early, but it was also pretty clear he wasn't going to pitch beyond that inning, having pitched three times in the previous five days. Cody Allen gave up another run later in the game, and while the Indians haven't suggested that they will change out the closer role, if they do opt to do so either Shaw or Scott Atchison are the most likely alternatives.
Mar 21 2015Shaw, who allowed a pair of solo homers Saturday, has now allowed twelve runs (six earned) on 12 hits, including three homers, in just 4.2 innings this spring.Shaw served as Cody Allen's primary setup man last year, making a league-high 80 appearances for Cleveland. His struggles against lefties and a mediocre K rate limit his fantasy value but he should open the season as the team's primary setup man despite his struggles this spring.
Jan 17 2015Shaw and the Indians agreed on a one-year, $1.55 million contract Friday.Shaw figures to be back as Cody Allen's primary setup man again in 2015 after a successful stint in the setup role in 2014.
Dec 3 2014Shaw was tendered a contract by the Indians before the Tuesday night deadline.Shaw emerged as Cody Allen's primary setup man in 2014, striking out 64 batters in 76.3 innings, with a franchise-record 8-0 appearances out of the bullpen and figures to fill the same role again in 2015.
Aug 27 2014Shaw tossed 2.3 shutout innings in relief and struck out three batters en route to claiming his fifth victory of the season in Tuesday's 8-6 win over the White Sox.Pitching for the sixth time in seven games, Shaw was asked to stay in the game longer than normal due to the game heading to extra innings. Shaw will almost certainly receive the next day or two off given his heavy workload, but his 2.44 ERA and 1.03 WHIP over 65 appearances this season will continue to entrench him as closer Cody Allen's top setup man.
Aug 10 2014Pitching for the third day in a row, Shaw threw a scoreless inning in relief Sunday against the Yankees.Shaw's ERA dropped to 2.68 with the outing. Though he didn't get a hold Sunday (the Indians had a four-run lead at the time), Shaw has 15 holds on the season.
Jun 2 2014Shaw was tagged with a blown save in Sunday's win over the Rockies. He allowed one run on two hits and a walk over 1.1 innings. The blown save actually occurred in the seventh inning with the Indians holding a 4-3 lead, as Shaw allowed a double and a walk before allowing the tying run to score on a sacrifice fly. He would escape further damage in the inning and would go on to record the first out in the eighth, before handing the ball over to lefty specialist Marc Rzepczynski. Shaw still remains one of the top candidates for saves in the Indians' committee approach, but Cody Allen looks like he could be option 1A for manager Terry Francona after he received the team's most recent two chances, converting both with relative ease.
May 31 2014Shaw received the win on Saturday after pitching 1.2 flawless innings including three strikeouts.Shaw appears to have lost the closer's role to Cody Allen despite the fact that his ERA (1.37) is the lowest on the team. He does appear to have settled in to the setup role, however, as he pitched in both the seventh and eighth inning on Saturday.
May 29 2014Shaw took the loss Wednesday, permitting an unearned run on one hit over two-thirds of an inning as the White Sox walked off with a 3-2 win.Shaw (1-1) actually recorded the last out of the eighth inning before coming back out to pitch the ninth, but Mike Aviles' throwing error allowed Tyler Flowers to reach base to kick off the frame. Leury Garcia pinch-ran for Flowers and promptly stole second base, before advancing to third Marcus Semien's sac fly. Moises Sierra then hit a walk-off single as Shaw endured his first loss of the season.
May 11 2014Shaw earned his second save of the season, throwing a 1-2-3 ninth inning against the Rays on Sunday.Shaw has now converted two of the three save chances he's received this season, and saw the first crack at a save since John Axford's removal from the closer's role Saturday. Terry Francona will likely continue to use a "closer by committee" approach, at least until he's ready to work Axford back into the role. Shaw stands to earn a save here and there in the meantime, but his usage will likely depend on the hitters that come to the plate in the ninth inning in save situations, as Francona will continue to play matchups.
May 10 2014Shaw may garner save opportunities following John Axford's removal from the closer's role Saturday.Manager Terry Francona is opting for a committee approach due to five unseemly games from Axford in May. Shaw himself has five consecutive blank appearances on the ledger, during which he gave up three hits and no walks, while striking out three in four frames. However, he'll have to contend with Cody Allen, Scott Atchison, and Marc Rzepczynski, which limits his potential.
May 6 2014Shaw picked up his first save of the season in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Twins.Shaw was summoned by manager Terry Francona to give their regular closer, John Axford, the night off after pitching three straight days. Shaw gave the fans at Progressive Field a bit of a scare, when an error followed by an RBI-double in the ninth momentarily gave the Twins life before he got pinch-hitter Josmil Pinto to pop up for the final out of the game.
Nov 1 2013Shaw could figure into the mix as the team's closer following the release of Chris Perez, MLB.com reports. "Cody Allen and Bryan Shaw are two guys, specifically, who have demonstrated the attributes you're looking for in a closer," general manager Chris Antonetti said. "So I'm confident that one of those two guys could potentially do that role, if we get to Spring Training and we feel that's the best alignment."The Indians will certainly shop around for bullpen arms this offseason and could even bring back free agent Joe Smith to further add to the competition. Shaw would appear to have a crack at earning the ninth inning role given the team's current roster construction however.
Aug 7 2013Shaw took the loss Wednesday night, allowing two runs over 2.1 innings in an extra-inning affair against the Tigers.Shaw's two runs tonight were the first runs allowed by the reliever since July 4. Despite the runs, Shaw has shown good stuff in three outings this month, striking out nine in 5.1 innings of relief.
May 25 2013Shaw allowed a run on two hits and a walk Saturday.Shaw's had a nice season despite the small blip Saturday with a 1.85 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP in 24.1 innings of relief for the Indians.
Mar 25 2013Shaw, who has allowed six hits and struck out 14 batters in six innings this spring, will open the season as a member of the bullpen, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.Shaw doesn't figure to have much of a role in the Cleveland bullpen but did enough this spring to earn a spot in the bullpen.
Dec 11 2012Shaw was sent to the Indians in Tuesday's three-way trade involving the Reds, Indians and Diamondbacks.Shaw began the 2012 season in a fairly high-leverage role, but by midseason had regressed to the point of having been sent to Triple-A to get straightened out. He joins the Indians no higher than fourth on the totem pole for potential saves.
Jul 5 2012Shaw gave up two runs on a pair of hits during the ninth inning against San Diego on Wednesday night. The outing Wednesday snapped a streak of 10 straight scoreless appearances for Shaw, who has emerged as a go-to setup man in the bridge to closer J.J. Putz this season. In the event of an injury to Putz, Shaw would likely yield save opportunities to David Hernandez, but he's a useful staff filler in the appropriate league context.
Apr 15 2012Shaw picked up his second save of the year Sunday, getting the final four outs of the game, one of them coming on a strikeout.Shaw is the guy that manager Kirk Gibson turns to when he wants to rest both J.J. Putz and David Hernandez. There is no change in the overall pecking order with the Diamondbacks, but should something health-wise happen to Putz, it's feasible that Shaw could jump in ahead of Hernandez in a pinch. Clearly he has the manager's confidence.
Apr 8 2012Shaw picked up the save Sunday against the Giants, thanks to J.J. Putz and David Hernandez each having worked the previous two days. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Obviously this doesn't change the pecking order in the bullpen, but, if something were to happen to those above him, Shaw has manager Kirk Gibson's confidence. He hit a batter and allowed a single, but then he struck out Buster Posey on three pitches with his nasty cutter to end the game.
Jul 20 2011Shaw has been recalled by Arizona, the D-Backs' official site reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He'll provide a fresh arm out of the bullpen, at least until the D-Backs need to make a move to call up a starter for Sunday's game.
Jun 29 2011Shaw has been optioned to the minors, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shaw walked three and struck out four in his five appearances, giving up runs in two of them. He wasn't given much of a look and will have to continue to impress in the minors to get another call.
Jun 10 2003The D-Backs have purchased Shaw's contract, the team's official Twitter feed reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Left-hander Zach Kroenke was optioned to Reno to make space on the roster for Shaw, who will get an opportunity to bring his combined 2.37 ERA and 24:11 K:BB from Double- and Triple-A into the D-Backs' bullpen. If he's going to stick at the big league level, Shaw will have to continue getting outs on the ground (1.64 GO/AO) given his home park.
