Jun 20 2025Cobb (hip) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Saturday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb received an injection to address left hip inflammation June 13, but he's been cleared to resume throwing off a mound. Assuming he doesn't endure another setback, Cobb should be back on a rehab assignment within a week or two. He has yet to make his 2025 MLB debut.
Jun 13 2025Cobb (hip) received an injection in his left hip Friday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb threw two innings in a rehab start Wednesday but received an injection Friday to address inflammation in his left hip. Cobb had previously been dealing with inflammation in his right hip. It's unclear how long the injection will set his assignment back. Wednesday's outing was his third rehab appearance.
Jun 10 2025Cobb (hip) will report to Triple-A Toledo to continue his rehab assignment Wednesday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander made his first two rehab starts with High-A West Michigan and is now moving up to the highest level of the minors. Cobb threw 34 pitches over 2.1 frames in his latest start and should build up to around the 50-pitch mark Wednesday. He'll likely require another rehab outing or two after that before being deemed ready to make his season debut for Detroit.
Jun 7 2025Cobb (hip) allowed one unearned run and two walks while striking out two across 2.1 innings in Thursday's rehab start with High-A West Michigan. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Tigers manager A.J. Hinch told reporters Friday that Cobb is feeling "incrementally better -- and by that, I think [Cobb] means no worse," per Evan Woodbery of MLive.com. Cobb has been on the 15-day injured list since the start of the season due to right hip inflammation. He'll throw another bullpen session in a couple of days before his next rehab start, and he'll need to build up his pitch count through multiple outings before being reinstated from the IL.
Jun 3 2025Cobb (hip) struck out three while allowing one hit and no walks over two scoreless innings in his first rehab start Friday with High-A West Michigan. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb was shut down at the start of spring training due to right hip inflammation and has taken longer than expected to move past the injury, but he's finally reached the last stage of a lengthy recovery process. He was sharp Friday in his first start at any level in 2025, retiring all six batters he faced on 24 pitches. Cobb will likely need close to the full 30-day rehab window to get stretched out for a starting role, so he's not expected to be reinstated from the 60-day injured list until late June.
May 28 2025Cobb (hip) is expected to begin a rehab assignment Thursday with High-A West Michigan, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb completed a bullpen session Monday and seems to be feeling good enough to see in-game action. The 37-year-old has been battling inflammation in his right hip since February, meaning he will likely require several starts in the minors to prepare for his return. He's not expected back until late June.
May 27 2025Cobb (hip) threw a bullpen session Monday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He was struggling fielding his position during live batting practice in early May and then got a series of injections in his hip last week. It's still very early in the ramp-up process for Cobb, who hasn't pitched in a game at any level yet this year.
May 20 2025Cobb is still dealing with inflammation in his hip and is scheduled to receive a series of injections this week, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 37-year-old opened the campaign on the injured list due to hip inflammation, which began bothering him at the start of spring training. Cobb received an epidural shot in late February to aid in his recovery, and he's now receiving some additional injections. The right-hander continues to play catch daily, but he'll likely require a significant ramp-up period before being cleared to pitch in games.
May 9 2025Cobb (hip) looked uncomfortable covering first base during a live batting practice session Friday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb threw the ball well enough, but moving off the mound to field his position seemed to be a problem. What that means exactly for the veteran right-hander's timeline is uncertain, but it presents another obstacle before he'll be cleared to pitch in games. Cobb has been shelved since February after being diagnosed with inflammation in his surgically repaired right hip. He's currently on the 15-day injured list but is a candidate to shift to the 60-day IL if the Tigers need to free up a 40-man roster spot, as a season debut before late May seems unlikely at this point.
Apr 4 2025Cobb (hip) said Friday that he expects to throw a live batting practice session early next week, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb has been throwing bullpen sessions, but this will be his first time facing hitters since he was diagnosed with right hip inflammation at the beginning of spring training. There is no timeline for the veteran right-hander's return, but it likely won't happen for at least another month or so.
Mar 27 2025The Tigers placed Cobb (hip) on the 15-day injured list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Right hip inflammation has plagued Cobb since the early stages of spring camp, and he didn't resume throwing off a mound until last week. He remains without a clear return timeline and likely won't have one until he's cleared to face live hitters, but he shouldn't be expected back for at least another month.
Mar 18 2025Cobb (hip) threw a bullpen session Saturday and is slated to throw another one Wednesday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Saturday's session was the first time Cobb has thrown off the mound since he was diagnosed with right hip inflammation at the beginning of spring training. The Tigers had indicated previously that Cobb might be ready to pitch in games by mid-March, but clearly he's not ready for that yet. There's no timetable for the veteran right-hander's return, but he can safely be expected to miss at least the first month or so of the season.
Feb 25 2025Cobb (hip) received an epidural injection to further aid in his recovery process, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He had already received a platelet-rich plasma injection earlier this month and played catch over the weekend. Cobb is scheduled to play catch again Wednesday but will not get into games until at least mid-March (a return timeline of a month was estimated Feb. 12). He was up around 150 innings in 2022 and 2023, but injuries greatly plagued him in 2021 and 2024, and it looks like 2025 is perhaps trending in a similar direction.
Feb 22 2025Cobb (hip) played catch Friday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Friday marked Cobb's first time throwing since he was shut down earlier this month due to hip inflammation. He is still expected to miss roughly the first month of the regular season, but he said Saturday that his hip feels much better, which is a positive sign.
Feb 12 2025Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Wednesday that Cobb will be set back for about a month due to right hip inflammation, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb's hip began bothering him as he was building up his offseason throwing program. He's been given a platelet-rich plasma injection and will be limited to rehab for a while. The veteran righty has some history with hip issues, although it was his left hip that he had surgery on last offseason. With Cobb likely to miss at least the first month of the season, there's an open spot in the Tigers' rotation. Casey Mize, Matt Manning, Kenta Maeda, Ty Madden, Brant Hurter and Keider Montero could all be in the mix to fill in.
Dec 10 2024Cobb passed his physical with the Tigers on Tuesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Tigers agreed to a one-year contract with Cobb on Monday, a deal which includes $15 million for 2025 with incentives of $1 million apiece for reaching the 140- and 150-inning thresholds. Cobb dealt with injuries during his one season with the Guardians in 2024, but he logged 149.2 and 151.1 innings during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, respectively, as part of the Giants' rotation.
Dec 9 2024The Tigers have agreed to a one-year contract with Cobb, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb has a connection with president of baseball operations Scott Harris, as the two were both with the Giants during the 2022 season. The veteran right-hander was limited to just 16.1 regular-season innings and 5.2 postseason frames with the Guardians in 2024 due to a variety of injuries but has typically been a solid mid-rotation starter when healthy. Cobb will get to pitch half his games in a pitcher-friendly venue at Comerica Park.
Oct 15 2024The Guardians removed Cobb from their ALCS roster due to an acute left low-back strain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb lasted 2.2 innings in his Game 1 start against the Yankees, getting charged with three runs on five hits and three walks. Because he's being removed from the roster due to injury, he is now ineligible for the World Series, should the Guardians advance. Ben Lively has absorbed Cobb's roster spot and might also get an ALCS start in his place.
Oct 13 2024Cobb has been named the starter for Game 1 of the American League Championship Series versus the Yankees, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb was able to start only three games during the regular season, though he was effective with a 2.76 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 10:3 K:BB over 16.1 innings. The right-hander started Game 3 of the ALDS versus Detroit and took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out two batters over three frames. That was his first outing since Sept. 1, so Cobb may not be ready to handle a full workload -- he exited after 41 pitches in his ALDS start.
Oct 7 2024Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said Monday that Cobb will start Wednesday in Game 3 of the ALDS in Detroit, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb was added to the roster prior to the ALDS after missing the end of the regular season with a blister on his pitching hand, and the Guardians will rely on him to be part of their rotation for the series. The veteran right-hander was limited to just three starts during the regular season due to injury but posted a 2.76 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 10:3 K:BB over 16.1 innings. It's unclear what kind of workload Cobb might be able to handle in Game 3, but it's doubtful Cleveland is counting on him to pitch terribly deep into the contest.
Oct 5 2024Cobb (finger) is included on the Guardians' ALDS roster. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb ended the regular season on the injured list due to a right finger blister, but his inclusion on the roster for the division series versus the Tigers suggests he's recovered. It's unclear if Cobb will be asked to start a game during the series or if he will serve as an option out of the bullpen. The right-hander posted a 2.76 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 10:3 K:BB over 16.1 innings across three starts during the regular season.
Sep 12 2024The Guardians placed Cobb on the 15-day injured list Thursday due to a right hand blister, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb had to be scratched from a scheduled start this past weekend due to the issue and didn't heal fast enough to avoid another stint on the IL. He'll be eligible to return during the final week of the season and should be ready to go by that time. Cobb's injury means both Joey Cantillo and Ben Lively (thigh), presuming the latter is healthy enough to do so, should remain in the Cleveland rotation.
Sep 6 2024Cobb will not make his scheduled start Saturday due to a blister, Joe Noga of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb was out in mid-August with a fractured nail and is now developing the beginnings of a blister on his index finger. The Guardians are playing things cautiously by not throwing him and will instead turn to Gavin Williams. It doesn't sound as if Cobb is currently tabbed for a return to the injured list, though that is not official.
Sep 1 2024Cobb (2-1) earned the win Sunday, allowing one run (zero earned) on two hits over six innings against the Pirates. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb (finger) returned from the 15-day injured list to make just his third start of the season and was lights-out, starting the game by retiring the first 18 batters he faced. In the seventh, Isiah Kiner-Falefa rocketed a ground ball up the middle that caught Cobb's non-pitching hand just above the heel of his glove and resulted in an infield single. Cobb was briefly shaken up but stayed in the game to face one more batter, allowing a single to Bryan Reynolds before being removed after 80 pitches. Following a rough first outing with the Guardians, Cobb has allowed just one earned run and seven total baserunners over his last two outings spanning 11.2 innings. He'll look to continue to spearhead the Cleveland charge towards a division pennant when he makes his next start, currently slated to take place in Los Angeles against the Dodgers.
Aug 30 2024Cobb (fingernail) will rejoin the rotation Sunday against the Pirates, Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb will wind up spending just one day beyond the minimum on the 15-day injured list due to a cracked fingernail on his pitching hand. He did not make a rehab start, but given the brief absence, Cobb should be able to handle a relatively normal workload versus the Pirates.
Aug 25 2024Guardians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti said that Cobb (fingernail) was scheduled to throw a bullpen session Sunday, Joe Noga of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The team hasn't provided an update regarding how Cobb felt coming out of the side session, but assuming he was able to throw all his pitches without being inhibited by the fractured nail on his right hand, he should throw a live batting practice session by the middle of the week. Given that Cobb was first placed on the 15-day injured list this past Monday due to the fingernail issue, he may not need a minor-league rehab assignment prior to being activated.
Aug 19 2024The Guardians placed Cobb on the 15-day injured list Monday with a fractured nail on his right hand. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb last pitched Aug. 14 and it's not clear whether he suffered the injury that day or since then. He had been tentatively slated to start Tuesday against the Yankees. Joey Cantillo could be a logical option to come up and pitch Tuesday or Wednesday, having last pitched at Triple-A last Thursday. Cobb has allowed six runs (five earned) over 10.1 innings in his first two starts with the Guardians.
Aug 14 2024Cobb (1-1) earned the win over Cleveland on Wednesday, allowing one run on three hits and two walks while striking out three batters over 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb struggled in his team debut last Friday, allowing five runs (four earned) over 4.2 frames. He was much better in his second outing, yielding just a fourth-inning run while getting through 5.2 frames on a relatively efficient 80 pitches. Cobb may still be on a mildly regulated pitch count since he missed the first four-plus months of the campaign following offseason hip surgery and topped out at 69 pitches during his minor-league rehab stint, but he should have any restriction lifted soon. His next start is projected to be a tough matchup against the Yankees in New York.
Aug 9 2024Cobb (0-1) took the loss in the second game of Friday's doubleheader against the Twins, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits and a walk over 4.2 innings. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his first start since last September, Cobb was shaky out of the gate, allowing a run in each of the first two innings, before giving up a three-run homer to Matt Wallner in the fifth. The 36-year-old Cobb was solid with San Francisco last year, going. 7-7 with a 3.87 ERA in 28 starts. He's currently slated to make his next start next week at home versus the Cubs.
Aug 5 2024Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said Monday that Cobb (hip) is on track to return from the 60-day injured list to make a start at some point during this weekend's four-game series in Minnesota, Chris Assenheimer of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb has spent the entire 2024 campaign on the IL while working his way back from offseason left hip surgery and hitting a couple road bumps in the rehab process along the way, but he looks to be back to optimal health and fully stretched out for a starting role. After Cobb made six rehab appearances from June 30 through July 26, he was traded from the Giants to the Guardians last week and shifted his rehab assignment to Triple-A Columbus. He looked good during his start with Columbus on Saturday, tossing 69 pitches and covering 4.2 innings while striking out five and allowing five baserunners.
Aug 1 2024Cobb (hip/shoulder/blister) will make a rehab start with Triple-A Columbus on Saturday, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Various injuries have prevented Cobb from pitching in the majors this season, though he could be added to the Guardians' rotation if everything goes well during his next rehab outing. Assuming Saturday is his final start in the minors, the 36-year-old righty would be lined up to make his season debut Aug. 9 during a doubleheader with the Twins.
Jul 30 2024The Guardians acquired Cobb (hip/shoulder/blister) from the Giants on Tuesday in exchange for Jacob Bresnahan and a player to be named later, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb has yet to pitch in the majors this season while recovering from a variety of injuries but had been expected to make a start for the Giants this weekend. The Guardians plan to give him one more rehab start before inserting him into their rotation next week, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Hayden Birdsong is expected to take Cobb's spot in the Giants' rotation.
Jul 28 2024Cobb (hip/shoulder) popped a blister on his right index finger during his final rehab start Friday, which will push back his season debut from the two-game series against Oakland on Tuesday and Wednesday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's yet another delay for the veteran right-hander, who has been on the shelf all season due to hip and shoulder injuries. The blister isn't expected to be a significant hurdle for Cobb, however, and he should still be able to make his season debut during next weekend's series at Cincinnati.
Jul 26 2024Cobb (hip/shoulder) is scheduled to throw five innings for Triple-A Sacramento on Friday in what is expected to be his final rehab start, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Friday's rehab start will be Cobb's sixth as part of his recovery from offseason hip surgery and midseason shoulder soreness. If all goes well, the right-hander would be in line to pitch Wednesday against the Athletics, a move that would push Jordan Hicks to the bullpen. Cobb has yielded five runs with a 20:5 K:BB across 16.1 minor-league innings during his rehab stint.
Jul 22 2024Cobb (hip/shoulder) struck out four and scattered two hits and one walk over five scoreless innings in a rehab start Saturday with Triple-A Sacramento. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making the fifth start of his rehab assignment, Cobb jumped up a couple levels after having previously pitched in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League and with Single-A San Jose. He needed 60 pitches to record 15 outs in what was his lengthiest rehab appearance to date. Cobb looks to be nearing the finish line in his recovery from left hip surgery as well as a sore pitching shoulder, the latter of which resulted in his throwing program being slowed down earlier this season. Per MLB.com, manager Bob Melvin said Sunday that the organization is still determining the next step for Cobb, but the veteran righty appears to be on track to make one more rehab start with Sacramento before coming off the 60-day injured list during the Giants' next homestand, which begins Friday and runs through July 31.
Jul 20 2024Cobb (hip/shoulder) will start for Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday, Amy Gutierrez of the Giants' official site reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb has made four minor-league appearances, but Saturday's will be his first at the Triple-A level. The 35-year-old threw 3.1 innings in his last outing and seems to be one or two more rehab starts away from being activated from the 60-day injured list. Cobb underwent offseason surgery on his left hip, and his rehab was complicated by a shoulder issue that popped up in April.
Jul 17 2024Cobb (hip/shoulder) struck out three and allowed one earned run on three hits and two walks over 3.1 innings in his rehab start Monday in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Through four rehab outings between the ACL and Single-A San Jose, Cobb has posted a so-so 3.97 ERA and 1.24 WHIP but a strong 16:4 K:BB across 11.1 innings. Cobb is likely to move his minor-league assignment back to San Jose or another higher-level affiliate this weekend, and he may need just two rehab starts to get stretched out enough to the point that the Giants would consider activating him from the 60-day injured list. Cobb opened the season on the IL while he completed his recovery from offseason hip surgery, then had his rehab program slowed down in April and May due to a shoulder issue.
Jul 15 2024Cobb (hip/shoulder) is scheduled to make the fourth start of his rehab assignment Monday in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb had made each of his first three rehab starts with Single-A San Jose, but with all levels of minor-league baseball in the midst of their All-Star break except for rookie ball, he'll head to Arizona to continue his progression. In his latest rehab outing with San Jose this past Wednesday, Cobb built up to 55 pitches and four innings while striking out four batters and giving up three runs on five hits and one walk. Including his upcoming outing Monday, Cobb will likely need to make at least two more rehab starts before the Giants would consider bringing him back from the 60-day injured list. Cobb has been on the shelf all season while recovering from offseason hip surgery but was expected to return at some point in the first half before a bout with shoulder irritation in mid-April resulted in a shutdown period that pushed back his timeline for activation.
Jul 6 2024Cobb (hip/shoulder) struck out five batters and allowed one walk over two innings in his rehab start with Single-A San Jose on Friday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb threw 45 pitches in his second rehab start Friday. Through two outings, he's recorded nine strikeouts while giving up just one run on two hits and a walk over four frames. Cobb should see his workload increase as he progresses through his recovery, and the 36-year-old will aim to return to the big club shortly after the All-Star break.
Jul 1 2024Cobb (hip/shoulder) struck out four and allowed one run over two innings in his first rehab start with Single-A San Jose on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb's surgically repaired hip has seemingly been a non-issue for a while, and he was finally cleared for game action after being set back by a nerve problem in his shoulder. The right-hander will need several weeks to get built back up, but he could be ready to return from the 60-day injured list shortly after the All-Star break if he continues to make progress in his recovery from the shoulder issue while increasing his pitch count in his subsequent rehab starts.
Jun 27 2024Cobb (hip/shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Friday and could begin a rehab assignment with Single-A San Jose afterward if everything goes smoothly, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb has been trending in the right direction since being shut down in May due to soreness in his right (throwing) shoulder. However, he still needs to build back up to a starter's workload after spending all season on the injured list, so he likely won't return to the Giants' rotation until after the All-Star break.
Jun 22 2024Manager Bob Melvin said Saturday that Cobb (hip/shoulder) has progressed to throwing live batting practice, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Giants' skipper added that Cobb isn't far off from beginning a rehab assignment, though he didn't give an estimate as to when that might be. Once the 36-year-old righty does begin his assignment, he will certainly require a lengthy stay in the minors after spending the first three months of the year on the injured list following offseason hip surgery and lingering shoulder issues.
Jun 17 2024Cobb (hip/shoulder) threw a bullpen session Friday consisting of 30-to-35 pitches, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb resumed throwing off a mound Tuesday with a 25-pitch session, and he felt good enough coming out of that workout to tack on another 5-to-10 pitches to his workload a few days later. The Giants haven't indicated whether Cobb will be ready to face hitters during the upcoming week, or if he'll continue to increase the volume and intensity of his bullpen sessions. Either way, the Giants likely aren't counting on Cobb being ready to make his 2024 debut until around the All-Star break. After undergoing surgery on his left hip Oct. 31, Cobb appeared poised to beat initial projections for his recovery timeline and return from the injured list in the first or second month of the season, but those hopes were dashed after he experienced irritation in his right shoulder in April and again in May, both of which resulted in his throwing program being put on pause for multiple weeks.
Jun 11 2024Cobb (hip/shoulder) is expected to throw a bullpen session Tuesday in San Francisco, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb has missed the entirety of the 2024 campaign while working his way back from hip surgery as well as soreness in his pitching shoulder. The 36-year-old appears to be on the cusp of taking a substantial step forward in his recovery, and if he can string together a couple successful bullpen sessions, a rehab assignment could be on the horizon. Cobb will still likely need multiple weeks to build up his activity before returning to the major-league roster at some point in July, barring any setbacks.
Jun 2 2024Cobb (hip/shoulder) said Sunday he's no longer feeling pain in his right shoulder and is "cautiously optimistic" he can throw a bullpen session during the Giants' next homestand, which begins June 10, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander received a cortisone injection for his shoulder in mid-May, but what actually helped him turn a corner with his nerve discomfort was taking a nerve medication. Cobb will need significant time to build up his throwing program, and he shouldn't be expected to make his season debut until sometime in July, at least.
May 18 2024Cobb was given another cortisone injection to combat his injured right shoulder, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb began the season on the injured list while he continued to recover from hip surgery, but it's been elbow and shoulder issues since then that have plagued him. This is the second cortisone shot he's been given for his shoulder, and the hope is that it will be more effective than the first one. Cobb will be shut down for a bit and his timetable to return is open-ended.
May 3 2024Cobb (hip) has been cleared to begin a throwing program, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb had to halt his throwing program last week after experiencing soreness in his pitching shoulder, but tests came back clean and he'll now try to ramp things back up following a brief shutdown period. The right-hander will be eligible for activation from the 60-day injured list in late May, but it's too soon to know whether he might have a shot to be ready at that time.
Apr 27 2024An MRI on Cobb's right shoulder came back negative Saturday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb was pulled off his throwing progression a few days ago after experiencing soreness in his shoulder, but he doesn't appear to be dealing with any structural damage. The 36-year-old veteran was moved to the 60-day injured list last Saturday as he continues to work his way back from an offseason hip procedure, and he's also battled elbow problems during his rehab process. He will be eligible to return beginning May 27, though it's unclear whether or not he will be ready to go by then.
Apr 26 2024Cobb (hip/elbow/shoulder) has been held back from throwing for the last few days due to soreness in his right shoulder, and he is set to see a team doctor Friday night, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.comreports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb was shifted to the 60-day IL on April 20 to give him more time to recover from his multiple ailments. He underwent left hip surgery in the offseason and was progressing through his rehab assignment following spring training, but he has suffered another setback with right shoulder soreness this time. Cobb's visit with the team doctor Friday night should give him and the Giants a better idea of the next steps forward in his rehab schedule.
Apr 20 2024Cobb (hip/elbow/shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day injured list by the Giants on Saturday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Mitch White. Cobb had been poised for a quicker-than-expected return from offseason hip surgery, but he's been slowed this month but elbow and shoulder issues. He doesn't have structural issues and has already resumed throwing, but being moved to the 60-day IL will allow Cobb a more deliberate pace after he was probably rushed a bit the first time around. The right-hander now won't be eligible to return until late May.
Apr 18 2024Cobb (hip) had a clean MRI on his shoulder and will throw from flat ground Friday, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb has dealt with both elbow and shoulder pain while working his way back from hip surgery. However, he's now set to resume throwing for the first time since April 1. Given his inability to ramp up consistently, Cobb will likely need several weeks before he's ready to return to a big-league mound.
Apr 5 2024Cobb (hip) said Friday he's been shut down from throwing for a few days due to some flexor tendon inflammation, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It doesn't appear to be a serious concern since Cobb is expected to resume throwing Monday, but any arm issue is a notable development as he makes his way back from offseason hip surgery. The 36-year-old's return timeline will be pushed back at least a week, which likely means he won't make his season debut until sometime in May.
Apr 1 2024Cobb (hip) continued his rehab process, throwing a bullpen session in Arizona on Sunday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb made a rehab start Thursday and then followed it up with another throwing session a few days later. The right-hander is eligible to be activated from the 15-day injured list April 9 and although that date is right around the corner, Cobb appears to be progressing ahead of schedule.
Mar 29 2024Cobb (hip) threw five innings in a minor-league game Thursday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's unclear how many starts the Giants want Cobb to make while he's on a rehab assignment, but the fact he's already built up to five innings suggests he may be able to make his regular-season debut sooner than initially thought. The 36-year-old righty will be eligible to come off the injured list April 9.
Mar 28 2024The Giants placed Cobb (hip) on the 15-day injured list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After undergoing left hip surgery Oct. 31, Cobb wasn't able to heal swiftly enough to earn a spot on the Giants' Opening Day roster, but he's still coming along far quicker than his initial six-month recovery timeline. Cobb threw 40 pitches in a minor-league spring training game last Friday and looks like he should be ready to make a rehab start with one of the Giants' affiliates in the near future or continue building up his pitch count at extended spring training in Arizona. He'll need at least a few outings before he's ready to handle a typical starter's workload with the Giants, but he looks like he could be a candidate to make his season debut in late April or early May.
Mar 22 2024Cobb (hip) will throw 40 pitches in a minor-league game Friday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He had been slated for his Cactus League debut, but the Giants have elected to have Cobb throw in a more controlled setting. A stint on the injured list to begin the season still seems very likely for Cobb, but it's looking like he could be ready relatively early on in April.
Mar 19 2024Cobb (hip) is scheduled to throw three innings during one of Friday's split-squad games against the Cubs, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chroniclereports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander struck out five in two hitless frames during a minor-league spring game Saturday and is now scheduled for his first Cactus League outing. Cobb underwent hip surgery in October and was initially expected to make his return during the middle of the summer, but he's significantly ahead of schedule in his recovery. A stint on the injured list to begin the season is still the expectation, but at this rate Cobb could be ramped up for his season debut just a few weeks into the season.
Mar 16 2024Cobb (hip) struck out five over two hitless innings in a minor-league game Saturday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb threw 18 of his 27 pitches for strikes in what was his first game appearance since he had left hip surgery last October. The veteran right-hander next outing figures to come during Cactus League play next week. A timetable for Cobb rejoining the Giants' rotation isn't clear yet, but a return before the end of April is looking distinctly possible.
Mar 15 2024Cobb (hip) will throw two innings in a minor-league game Saturday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Giants had left open the possibility that Cobb could make his Cactus League debut that day, but they've elected to have him pitch in a more controlled environment instead. Cobb has made a rapid recovery from hip surgery and looks to be on track to rejoin the Giants' rotation sometime in April.
Mar 11 2024Cobb (hip) could make his Cactus League debut as soon as Saturday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Cobb underwent left hip surgery in October, the initial expectation was that he probably wouldn't be ready to make his season debut until a little before the All-Star break. However, he's blown his projected recovery timeline out of the water thus far and now might rejoin the rotation sometime in April if all continues to go well. Whenever Cobb is cleared to debut, his return would be a big boost to a Giants rotation that has already lost Tristan Beck (arm) and could be without Keaton Winn (elbow). Cobb now shapes up as a nice value pick in fantasy leagues.
Mar 8 2024Cobb (hip) will throw a live batting practice session Monday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb continues to make good progress from last October's left hip surgery and is now expected back much sooner than initially anticipated. The Giants have not yet offered a clear timeline for Cobb's season debut, but president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi did say last weekend that the righty could be back "relatively soon into the year."
Mar 3 2024Giants GM Farhan Zaidi said Sunday that Cobb (hip) could be available "relatively soon into the year," Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's not exactly an explicit return timeline, but it's still a major improvement on the mid-summer return that was the previous expectation. Cobb underwent surgery on his left hip in late October, and his recovery has apparently gone better than anticipated. The 36-year-old has already resumed throwing off a mound and could soon be cleared to face live hitters.
Feb 20 2024Cobb (hip) threw 12 pitches off a mound Sunday and will have another session Tuesday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb had left hip surgery in October and isn't expected to be available until the middle of the season. Previous reports indicated he may begin facing hitters in spring training, but he's still got a long way to go before he can push for a rotation spot. With Cobb out early in the season, Tristan Beck and Keaton Winn are considered front-runners to round out the Giants' rotation.
Feb 14 2024Cobb (hip) said Wednesday that he hopes to be cleared to throw off a mound soon, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coming back from October left hip surgery, Cobb began throwing on flat ground a few weeks ago and is eager to take the next step. The goal is to progress to facing hitters before the end of spring training with an eye toward rejoining the Giants' rotation before the All-Star break, although any timetable at this juncture is tentative.
Jan 22 2024Cobb (hip) began a throwing program Thursday, Evan Webeck of The Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb played catch from 60 feet in what was his first bit of throwing since he underwent left hip surgery in October. The veteran right-hander is hopeful of rejoining the Giants' rotation prior to the All-Star break, although there's no clear timetable for him at this point. Cobb held a 3.87 ERA and 131:37 K:BB over 151.1 frames for San Francisco in 2023.
Jan 18 2024Cobb (hip) hopes to begin a flat-ground throwing program in the next few days, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb underwent surgery in late October to repair a torn labrum and remove three bone chips from in his left hip. He's been keeping his arm in shape by throwing plyo balls from his knees and hopes to play catch soon. Cobb thinks he'll be able to return sooner than expected, although there's no clear timetable for when it might happen, with the right-hander saying only that "I fully expect to be back in the first half." The 36-year-old was a first-time All-Star in 2023 after posting a 2.91 ERA in the first half, but he stumbled to a 5.25 ERA after the break while dealing with nagging hip pain.
Nov 6 2023The Giants exercised Cobb's (hip) $10 team million option for 2024 on Monday, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb is expected to be sidelined for at least the first month or so of the 2024 season after having surgery last week to repair his left hip. Even with that, the Giants decided it was worth bringing the right-hander back rather than pay him a $2 million buyout. Cobb pitched well in 2023 when healthy, collecting a 3.87 ERA and 131:37 K:BB over 151.1 frames covering 28 starts.
Oct 30 2023Cobb will undergo left hip surgery Tuesday, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb has been attempting to rehab his hip injury without going under the knife, but the team has since announced that he'll undergo a procedure Tuesday to repair his labrum and hip impingement issues, per Shea. The right-hander is expected to need around six months to return to the mound, meaning he'd miss at least the first month of the 2024 campaign. The Giants were expected to pick up his $10 million club option for the upcoming season, though this setback will certainly complicate the organization's decision.
Oct 3 2023Cobb will get a second opinion on his troublesome left hip in the coming weeks, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb battled hip discomfort throughout the second half and finished the regular season on the 15-day injured list with what was diagnosed as a left hip impingement. He's trying the rest-and-rehab route at the moment but will seek out other possible treatment options. San Francisco holds a $10 million club option (or $2 million buyout) on the 35-year-old right-hander for the 2024 campaign.
Sep 20 2023Cobb was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a left hip impingement. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb has been dealing with a nagging hip issue throughout the second half and it flared up on him during Tuesday's start against the Diamondbacks. He is done for the remainder of the regular season, although the Giants have not ruled out the possibility that he could return for the playoffs, should they qualify. Kyle Harrison will absorb Cobb's rotation spot.
Sep 19 2023Cobb was removed from his start Tuesday against the Diamondbacks with an apparent hip injury, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb was grabbing at his left hip at the end of the second inning and was taken out of the game after not being able to get comfortable while warming up ahead of the third frame. The Giants will take a look at Cobb and should provide more details shortly, but fantasy managers should view Cobb as day-to-day for now.
Sep 15 2023Cobb had his next start pushed back to Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb was originally slated to start during a doubleheader Saturday against the Rockies, but the team has opted to give him extra rest as he's been managing a hip issue of late. The team has yet to officially announce a starter to replace Cobb, but Ross Stripling (back) was activated from the injured list Friday and appears to be a logical candidate to take the mound.
Sep 11 2023Cobb (hip) allowed two unearned runs on three hits and a walk while striking out two over five innings in a no-decision versus the Guardians on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb threw 47 of 79 pitches for strikes after having this start pushed back a couple of days while he dealt with hip soreness stemming from an impingement. The right-hander's lone mistake was a two-run home run by Josh Naylor in the third inning. Cobb has endured a shaky second half of the campaign but still has a 3.62 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 130:36 K:BB through 149.1 innings over 27 starts this season. He's lined up for a road start in Colorado over the weekend.
Sep 10 2023Cobb (hip) will start Monday's game against the Guardians, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb has dealt with a left hip impingement over the second half of the 2023 campaign, and he recently received a cortisone injection that helped him avoid a trip to the injured list. Over his last five starts, he's posted a 5.67 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 27 innings.
Sep 8 2023Cobb (hip) said he expects to return to the rotation Monday against the Guardians, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb has been pitching through a left hip impingement during the second half, but he received a cortisone injection earlier this week that has helped him avoid a stay on the injured list. The veteran right-hander struggled in his last start against the Padres on Sept. 3, but he worked a complete game and nearly notched a no-hitter the outing before against the Reds.
Sep 7 2023Cobb (hip) is not listed among the Giants' scheduled starters for their weekend series against the Rockies, Evan Webeck of the San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Logan Webb will start Friday and Kyle Harrison will go Saturday, but there is a TBA listed for Sunday's series finale. Cobb threw a career-high 131 pitches in a complete game Aug. 29 against the Reds before yielding four earned runs over just three innings in his latest turn Sept. 3 at San Diego. He told reporters after that rough outing versus the Padres that he's been battling a left hip impingement since mid-June. It's possible Cobb is simply being pushed back a bit -- maybe even to fill the TBA on Sunday -- but this is a must-win series for the Giants and they're already thin on starters.
Sep 3 2023Cobb (7-6) allowed four runs on six hits over three innings Sunday, striking out three and taking a loss against San Diego. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb tossed 58 pitches but was throwing on short rest after his 131-pitch complete game against the Reds on Aug. 29. The Padres jumped on him with three runs in the first inning before adding another in the third. It was Cobb's shortest outing of the year and his ERA climbed to 3.74 through 26 starts. His next outing is currently projected to be a home matchup with the Rockies.
Aug 29 2023Cobb (7-5) allowed one run on one hit and one walk while striking out eight over nine innings, earning the complete-game win Tuesday over the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb allowed just one batter to reach base on an error over the first 8.1 innings before giving up a walk and an RBI double. It was a monumental effort for the right-hander, who needed 131 pitches (83 strikes) for his second complete game of the season. He had starts of varying quality throughout August, allowing 21 runs over 35.1 innings over six appearances. Overall, Cobb has a 3.57 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 125:35 K:BB through 141.1 innings across 25 starts this season. He's tentatively lined up for a road start in San Diego this weekend, but given the Giants' propensity for using bullpen games, it wouldn't be surprising to see Cobb pushed back a day or two after such a heavy workload.
Aug 23 2023Cobb did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing two runs on five hits over five innings against the Phillies. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb was shutout the Phillies for five innings Wednesday before surrendering back-to-back home runs to Kyle Schwarber and Trae Turner to begin the sixth. Despite the rough finish, it was an encouraging outing from Cobb, who'd struggled to a 6.54 ERA over his previous six starts. Overall, the veteran right-hander is 6-5 with a 3.74 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 117:34 K:BB across 24 starts (132.1 innings) this season. Cobb's currently in line for a home matchup with the Reds in his next outing.
Aug 19 2023Cobb (6-5) took the loss Friday as the Giants fell 4-0 to Atlanta, giving up four runs on eight hits and two walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander did keep the ball in the park, a noteworthy feat after he served up six homers in his prior three starts, but this was still another disappointing result for Cobb. He's winless in seven outings since the All-Star break, going 0-3 with a 5.73 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 27:13 K:BB through 37.2 innings, and he hasn't struck out more than four batters in any of his four trips to the mound in August. Cobb will try to turn things around in his next start, likely to come next week in Philadelphia.
Aug 12 2023Cobb (6-4) allowed six runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out three over 4.1 innings to take the loss Saturday versus the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb's winless stretch is at six starts, and he's given up at least three runs in four of them. It's been a rough second half of the campaign so far -- Cobb had a 2.91 ERA at the All-Star break, but it's up to 3.62 with a 1.37 WHIP and 110:32 K:BB through 121.2 innings over 22 starts this season amid his current struggles. The right-hander is lined up for a difficult road start in Atlanta next week.
Aug 7 2023Cobb allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk over 5.1 innings in Sunday's loss to Oakland. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb served up two homers in the subpar outing, both to Nick Allen. Cobb forced a season-low three whiffs Sunday. Over his last four outings, he's registered a 5.40 ERA with just 16 punchouts across 21.2 frames. The veteran righty owns a 3.30 ERA and 1.33 WHIP through 21 starts this season. Cobb's next outing is projected to be at home against the Rangers.
Aug 1 2023Cobb allowed three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out four over six innings in a no-decision versus the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb was ill Monday, so he was pushed back a day in the rotation. He threw 84 pitches (53 strikes) Tuesday before turning the ball over to Ryan Walker. All three runs against Cobb came on solo home runs, making Tuesday the second time all year he's given up multiple homers. He's at a 3.05 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 104:29 K:BB through 112 innings over 20 starts this season. The right-hander is projected for a road start versus the Angels next week.
Jul 25 2023Cobb allowed three hits and a walk while striking out nine over six scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Athletics on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb was unfortunate to miss out on a win here, as he turned in a dominant start in response to surrendering five runs his last time out. The 35-year-old right-hander's nine strikeouts were a season high, and he kept runs off the board for the sixth time in 19 starts this season. He's at a 2.97 ERA with a 1.35 WHIP and 100:28 K:BB through 106 innings overall. Cobb is lined up for a challenging home start versus the Diamondbacks next week.
Jul 21 2023Cobb (6-3) took the loss Thursday, allowing five runs on nine hits and four walks over 4.1 innings against the Reds. He did not record any strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb struggled with his command early, issuing three walks over the first three innings before surrendering a two-run blast to Luke Maile with no outs in the bottom of the third. The right-hander would get tagged for another two runs in the fourth after giving up a leadoff double to Jonathan India to start the inning and would eventually get handed his first loss since May 28. Cobb had allowed two earned runs or fewer in each of his last four starts coming in and actually failed to record a strikeout Wednesday for the first time this season.
Jul 16 2023Cobb didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 3-1 win over the Pirates, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander had to wait out a 40-minute rain delay before taking the mound, but Cobb was unfazed and delivered his eighth quality start of the year on 94 pitches (58 strikes). He's allowed two earned runs or less in four straight outings dating back to June 13, posting a 2.14 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 20:4 K:BB through 21 innings over that stretch. He'll try to keep rolling in his next start, which is likely to come next week in Cincinnati.
Jul 5 2023Cobb (6-2) allowed six hits and struck out seven without walking a batter over six shutout innings to earn the win Wednesday over the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb hasn't walked a batter over his last two starts since returning from an oblique injury. He wasn't giving up much of anything in a 2-0 win, tossing his fifth scoreless outing in 16 starts this season. The veteran right-hander has a 2.91 ERA despite a 1.34 WHIP, and he's added 86 strikeouts over 89.2 innings. Cobb's next start will likely be during a three-game series versus the Pirates following the All-Star break.
Jun 30 2023Cobb allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits over five innings in Friday's win over the Mets. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb returned from a stint on the injured list with an oblique injury and made his first start since June 13. He tossed 56 of 79 pitches for strikes, including 10 whiffs. The veteran righty owns a strong 3.12 ERA and 79:21 K:BB across 83.2 frames this season. Cobb is currently lined up to face the Mariners at home next week.
Jun 29 2023Cobb (oblique) will return to the Giants' rotation Friday versus the Mets, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb proved his health in a rehab start Saturday with Single-A San Jose, tallying nine strikeouts over 3.2 innings of one-run ball. He's been on the shelf since June 15 because of a mild left oblique strain.
Jun 26 2023Cobb (oblique) is expected to return from the injured list during this week's road trip, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He struck out nine and walked none over 3.2 innings in a rehab start Saturday for Single-A San Jose. Cobb was able to build up to 66 pitches while touching 96 mph with his fastball in that rehab outing, so it makes sense that he would be able return to the rotation this week, likely either Friday in New York or Thursday in Toronto.
Jun 18 2023Cobb was placed on the 15-day injured list Sunday, retroactive to June 15, with a left oblique strain, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander dealt with hip tightness during his June 8 start in Colorado and lasted just 79 pitches his last time out against St. Louis on Tuesday, and he'll now be sidelined for at least the next couple weeks with an oblique strain. It's a big blow to San Francisco's rotation, and it's unclear if Cobb will have a chance to return when first eligible June 30.
Jun 14 2023Cobb didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 11-3 win over the Cardinals, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Giants held just a 3-2 lead when Cobb got the hook after 79 pitches (51 strikes), denying him a chance at his sixth win of the year. The veteran right-hander dealt with tightness in his left hip during his last start, which might explain why he wasn't pushed too hard, but it didn't appear to be an issue Tuesday. Cobb will take a 3.09 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 76:21 K:BB through 78.2 innings into his next outing, likely to come at home early next week against the Padres.
Jun 8 2023Cobb battled minor hip tightness during his start Thursday at Colorado, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb told reporters afterward that it's a minor issue and will not prevent him from taking his next scheduled turn in the Giants' rotation. He looked a little uncomfortable in parts of Thursday's outing while surrendering four earned runs on eight hits and one walk over five innings in a no-decision versus the Rockies. Cobb did manage to tally seven strikeouts in what became a 6-4 comeback victory for San Francisco. He holds a solid 3.01 ERA with 71 strikeouts through 74.2 total innings this year.
Jun 7 2023Cobb will start for the Giants on Thursday in Colorado, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The team had been considering an opener/bulk reliever situation but instead will go with Cobb, who will be on normal rest. The Giants could use an opener Friday against the Cubs instead.
Jun 3 2023Cobb (5-2) allowed five hits and struck out seven without walking a batter over 7.2 shutout innings to earn the win Saturday over the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb was lit up for seven runs over four innings against the Brewers his last time out, but he responded with his fourth scoreless outing of the season. He's gone at least seven innings in each of those stellar starts. This was also the first time in his last six appearances that he didn't walk a batter. Cobb is at a 2.71 ERA despite a 1.32 WHIP and 64:18 K:BB over 69.2 innings. The right-hander is set to face a tough test in his next start, which is projected to be in Colorado next week.
May 29 2023Cobb (4-2) took the loss Sunday, allowing seven runs on seven hits and four walks over four innings during a 7-5 defeat to the Brewers. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb walked multiple batters for the fourth time over his past five starts and surrendered a season-high seven runs. Coming into the contest, the right-hander had been excellent, sporting a 2.17 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 52:14 K:BB across 10 appearances (58 innings), so it's safe to chalk Sunday's outing up as an outlier. The 35-year-old's role in the Giants rotation is solidified as long as he's healthy, and his next start is tentatively scheduled during a three-game weekend set versus Baltimore.
May 24 2023Cobb (4-1) got the win over the Twins on Tuesday, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out eight over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb surrendered a two-run homer to Byron Buxton in the first and then a solo home run to Michael Taylor in the fifth but otherwise did not allow a single hitter to reach scoring position. He generated 22 chases and tied his season high with eight strikeouts while tossing his third quality start over his last four tries. He's now completed at least seven innings five times this season after managing to do so only three times last year. He's sitting at a 2.17 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 52:14 K:BB over 58 innings and lines up for a road start against the Brewers over the weekend.
May 16 2023Cobb allowed two runs on five hits and five walks while striking out three over 3.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Phillies on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In addition to his season-high five walks, he also had two wild pitches and a balk. Considering Cobb hadn't allowed a run in three of his last four outings, this was an unusually poor effort. It's also the third time in nine starts he's failed to complete four innings, though he's yet to give up more than three runs in any game. Cobb owns a 1.94 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 44:13 K:BB over 51 innings. He's tentatively projected for a road start in Minnesota early next week.
May 11 2023Cobb (3-1) earned the win Thursday, pitching 7.1 shutout innings, while allowing seven hits and two walks against Arizona. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb was lifted after 104 pitches in the eighth inning after walking Josh Rojas. It was the third time in four starts that Cobb did not allow a run. His ERA is down to 1.70, well below his career 3.76 ERA. However, Cobb's WHIP sits at 1.24, nearly identical to his career 1.26 WHIP. So an ERA regression is likely coming.
May 6 2023Cobb (2-1) earned the win Saturday, allowing five hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings against the Brewers. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb had no issues with the Brewers lineup Saturday, holding the team to just five hits over seven shutout innings without allowing a single extra-base hit. Despite the 2-1 record, Cobb has been incredible through seven starts this season, owning a 2.01 ERA and 6.33 K/BB. Though the 35-year-old isn't the best source of strikeouts (8.48 K/9), Cobb provides value by limiting damage while benefitting from making frequent starts in pitcher-friendly Oracle Park.
Apr 30 2023Cobb did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing three runs on seven hits over five innings against the Padres. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb turned in another strong outing Sunday, striking out seven while allowing three runs, each of which came in the fifth inning where Austin Nola hit a two-run homer and a Juan Soto single drove in Fernando Tatis. Cobb is off to a roaring start to 2023, having tossed a complete game shutout and owning a 2.43 ERA and an 8.25 K/BB through 33.1 innings. Considering Cobb's incredible form play and pitcher-friendly home diamond, the 35-year-old should remain a strong fantasy option.
Apr 1 2023Cobb didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 7-5 win over the Yankees, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk over 3.2 innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was stingy but not efficient, getting the hook after needing 76 pitches (47 strikes) to record only 11 outs, but he was always likely to get a quick hook after being bothered by knee soreness late in spring training. Cobb is coming off a 2022 campaign in which he struck out a career-high 151 batters over 149.2 innings, but that was also the first time since 2018 he's been able to make more than 18 starts. The 35-year-old is projected to take the mound at home next week against the Royals.
Mar 29 2023Cobb will start the Giants' second game of the season Saturday versus the Yankees, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb has been battling some knee discomfort lately, but he threw four innings in a minor-league game Monday, clearing the way for him to take his first turn of the regular season. Given the difficult matchup and probably a relatively limited workload for Cobb, fantasy managers might want to consider benching him this weekend.
Mar 26 2023Cobb (knee) is slated to pitch in a minor-league game Monday on the back fields of Giants camp, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb's bruised knee apparently responded well to his bullpen session Saturday, so he'll likely aim to get at least a few innings under his belt Monday as he aims to avoid a stint on the injured list to begin the 2023 season. If Cobb checks out fine following Monday's outing, he could be cleared to make a start in New York next weekend in the Giants' season-opening series with the Yankees.
Mar 25 2023Cobb (knee) will throw a bullpen session Saturday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb was labeled "iffy" for the start of the season by manager Gabe Kapler on Thursday, but it appears he's trending in the right direction. The right-hander is still scheduled to start the second game of the season, as the Giants haven't announced an alternative plan for their rotation yet.
Mar 14 2023Giants manager Gabe Kapler announced Tuesday that Cobb (knee) will start the second game of the regular season, Evan Webeck of the San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Clearly that knee contusion that Cobb suffered Saturday in a Cactus League start against the Dodgers is not going to be a lingering issue. The veteran right-hander pitched to a 3.73 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 151:43 K:BB over 149.2 innings (28 starts) for San Francisco last season.
Mar 13 2023Cobb (knee) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The side session should provide the Giants with a good gauge for how Cobb's left knee is feeling two days after it was struck by a line drive during his Cactus League start versus the Dodgers. Cobb was diagnosed with a bruise after follow-up tests ruled out any structural damage to the knee, so the right-hander looks as though he could be on track to return to the Giants' spring pitching schedule without having to miss a start. The team will offer an update on his next steps once he completes the bullpen session.
Mar 11 2023Cobb was diagnosed with a left knee contusion after leaving Saturday's Cactus League start against the Dodgers and is hopeful to make his next scheduled start, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb was hit in the knee with a line drive during the outing, and while he looked to be in significant pain, the right-hander's tests came back negative. The Giants will want to make sure the 35-year-old is healthy before he gets back on the mound, but there's a very good chance that Cobb will be ready for the beginning of the season.
Feb 20 2023Cobb is working on incorporating a cutter and a slider into his pitch mix, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb is also going to call his own games this season using the PitchCom system. The righty was solid last year with a 3.73 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over 149.2 innings across 28 starts, and he racked up a career-high 151 strikeouts. Cobb will still likely lean on his splitter and sinker, which accounted for a combined 84.5 percent of his pitches last season, per Statcast. He projects as a mid-rotation option for the Giants in 2023.
Oct 4 2022Cobb (7-8) took the loss during Tuesday's 6-2 defeat at the hands of the Padres, allowing one run on seven hits with seven strikeouts in five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb kept San Diego in check aside form one run on two hits in the third inning and departed with the game at a manageable 1-0 deficit, however, the bullpen surrendered four runs in the sixth to cement his second loss in three starts. The 34-year-old induced an impressive 16 swinging strikes on just 73 pitches to post his 11th start with at least seven strikeouts -- easily surpassing his previous career-high of seven such starts set in 2013. He finishes the season with a 3.73 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with 151 strikeouts in 149.2 innings across 28 starts.
Sep 30 2022Cobb (7-7) allowed four runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out five over five innings to earn the win over the Diamondbacks on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb wasn't at his sharpest Friday, but he made it through five frames with enough run support to earn his first win in three starts. He's given up 11 runs over his last 15.1 innings. The right-hander now has a 3.79 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 144:43 K:BB through 144.2 innings across 27 starts this season. Cobb is projected for one more start in 2022, a road outing in San Diego next week.
Sep 25 2022Cobb (6-7) took the loss during Saturday's 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Diamondbacks, allowing five runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts in five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb permitted just one baserunner through three innings before falling apart in the fourth, surrendering all five runs on six baserunners to fall in line for his first loss since Aug. 3. The 34-year-old has now logged two poor starts, two excellent ones and one mediocre turn through five September starts with the numbers culminating to a 3.14 ERA across 28.2 innings. Cobb carries a 3.67 ERA and 1.27 WHIP into a rematch with Arizona next weekend.
Sep 18 2022Cobb allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three over 5.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb allowed an RBI double to Justin Turner in the fourth inning and an RBI single to Freddie Freeman in the sixth. It was the second time in five starts that Cobb's allowed runs to score, with both of those instances coming against the Dodgers. The right-hander has been quietly effective with a 3.48 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 136:40 K:BB through 134.2 innings across 25 starts this season. He'll look to get back in the win column next week in a projected road start versus Arizona.
Sep 12 2022Cobb (6-6) earned the win over Atlanta on Monday, allowing six hits and striking out seven batters over seven scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb scattered six singles in the victory and didn't walk any batters for just the second time in his past 10 starts. The right-hander allowed only two runners to reach second base, and none made it to third. He racked up 18 swinging strikes in the outing and fanned exactly seven batters for the third time in his past four starts. Cobb started the season poorly, posting a 6.25 ERA and 1.55 WHIP over his first seven games, but he has been much better since then, registering a 2.59 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 94:28 K:BB across 17 contests. Remarkably, Cobb's victory Monday was only his third over the impressive 17-game span.
Sep 8 2022Cobb did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks over 4.1 innings against the Dodgers. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb surrendered a three-run homer to Justin Turner with nobody out in the fifth to give the Dodgers a 3-2 lead, though the Giants came back to get Cobb off the hook for the loss. This was only the fourth home run allowed by the 34-year-old in 80.2 innings during his last 14 starts. The righty is drastically better at home with a 2.57 ERA and 1.11 WHIP over 70 innings compared to a 5.16 ERA and 1.53 WHIP over 52.1 innings away from San Francisco.
Sep 3 2022Cobb (5-6) earned the win Friday, allowing three hits and one walk over seven scoreless innings in a 13-1 victory over Philadelphia. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Giants got to Kyle Gibson early and Cobb cruised from there en route to his fifth win. Cobb now sits with a 2.83 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 10.2 K/9 in eight starts since the All-Star break (47.2 innings), and the underlying numbers suggest there may be even more improvement coming to his ERA. Cobb's 2.85 FIP this season would rank seventh in all of baseball if he had enough innings to qualify.
Aug 27 2022Cobb allowed four hits and two walks while striking out seven over five scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Twins on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb needed 99 pitches (64 strikes) to complete five frames, but it was an otherwise effective start. He was in line for the win until the Twins got a pair of run-scoring, two-out hits in the bottom of the ninth off closer Camilo Doval. Cobb hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of his last six starts, but he has just one win in that span. For the season, the right-hander has a 3.81 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 115:33 K:BB through 111 innings across 21 starts. He's tentatively lined up for a home start versus the Phillies next week.
Aug 20 2022Cobb didn't factor into the decision during Saturday's 4-3 loss to Colorado, allowing three runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts in 6.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb surrendered two runs on four hits in the third inning and an additional run on two hits in the seventh before being removed. The 34-year-old fired 61 of 87 pitches for strikes but induced only four whiffs in recording his lowest strikeout tally since July 6 with three. Cobb has submitted quality starts in four of his last five turns, pitching to a 3.30 ERA with 34 strikeouts across 30 innings during the stretch. He carries a 3.99 ERA into his next start, scheduled for next weekend in Minnesota.
Aug 16 2022Cobb (4-6) earned the win over Arizona on Monday, allowing one run on five hits and three walks while striking out five batters over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb breezed through five scoreless innings without giving up an extra-base hit. He was tagged for a solo homer by Christian Walker in the sixth but finished the frame without allowing any additional damage. Cobb began the campaign with three wins over his first six starts but then went 12 straight appearances without a victory before getting off the schneid Monday. Despite the difficulties moving into the win column, Cobb has been effective since returning from a stint on the injured list June 19, posting a 2.92 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 58:19 K:BB over 61.2 innings.
Aug 9 2022Cobb allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out seven in five-plus innings in a no-decision versus the Padres on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb gave up Juan Soto's first home run as a Padre in the fourth inning. In the sixth, Cobb put three straight batters on base and was charged with two runs in the frame as reliever Yunior Marte let an inherited runner score. This was a setback for Cobb, who had completed at least six innings in five of his last six starts. The right-hander owns a 4.15 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 100:28 K:BB across 93.1 innings through 18 outings this year. He's projected for a home start versus the Diamondbacks next week.
Aug 4 2022Cobb (3-6) was tagged with the loss against the Dodgers on Wednesday, pitching 6.1 innings and allowing three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out eight batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb notched his fifth quality start over his past six games, but he hasn't earned a single victory over that stretch. In fact, the right-hander has picked up three losses despite posting a solid 3.38 ERA and 1.13 WHIP across the six games, and he hasn't earned a win since mid-May. Cobb nonetheless has been productive of late in fantasy leagues -- especially those that don't count wins -- as he's racked up 25 strikeouts over his past 18 innings.
Jul 29 2022Cobb (3-5) allowed a run on three hits, a walk and a hit batter while striking out 11 in six innings, taking the loss Friday versus the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb allowed a solo home run to Patrick Wisdom in the fifth inning, which accounted for the only run in the game before the ninth. The Cubs added three more in the final frame, and the Giants' comeback effort fell short. Cobb recorded quality starts in four of his six outings in July, allowing 13 runs (11 earned) across 36 innings. He's gone 10 starts without a win despite pitching well. For the season, he owns a 4.06 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 85:23 K:BB through 82 innings in 16 appearances. The right-hander is lined up for a tough home start versus the Dodgers next week.
Jul 24 2022Cobb allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks with six strikeouts in 5.2 innings in a no-decision during Sunday's loss to the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb allowed the first three batters to reach, but he was able to limit the damage to one run in the first inning. The Dodgers got to him for three more runs in the third, but Darin Ruf's two-run home run got Cobb off the hook in the fifth. The right-hander had completed at least six innings in three straight starts before the All-Star break, so this was a small step back. He now has a 4.26 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 74:22 K:BB through 76 innings in 15 starts overall. He's projected for a home start versus the Cubs next week.
Jul 16 2022Cobb allowed an unearned run on four hits and no walks while striking out five in 7.1 innings versus the Brewers on Saturday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb allowed the Brewers to tie the game at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning. That was the only run he allowed, but he exited after the play, having thrown 99 pitches (64 strikes). This was his longest outing of the season and one of his best performances as well. The right-hander now has a 4.09 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 68:20 K:BB across 70.1 innings. Cobb carries a 3-4 record into the second half of the campaign.
Jul 11 2022Cobb (3-4) allowed three runs on six hits and four walks with four strikeouts in six innings, taking the loss Monday versus the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb met the minimum standards for a quality start, but this wasn't a very impressive outing. All three runs against him came in the third inning, With 12 runs (eight earned) allowed across 25.1 innings since he returned from a neck injury, Cobb's doing a middling job lately. That's on par with his season numbers -- he owns a 4.71 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 63:20 K:BB through 63 innings in 13 starts overall. The right-hander is on track for a tough home start versus the Brewers this weekend.
Jul 6 2022Cobb pitched six innings against Arizona on Wednesday, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three batters. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb was tagged for four runs over his first two frames, but he was able to settle down and prevent any additional runs from there while tying a season high with six innings. The right-hander was in line for the loss when he departed, but San Francisco's offense stormed back late in the game to allow him to escape with a no-decision. Cobb has allowed only eight earned runs over 25.1 innings (2.84 ERA) across his past five starts, but he hasn't picked up any wins over that time. His last victory came May 17 in Colorado in a wild game in which he surrendered seven runs.
Jul 1 2022Cobb allowed three hits and a walk while striking out three in five scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the White Sox on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb matched White Sox starter Lance Lynn for five frames, which was the former's longest start since returning from a neck strain. Per Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News, Cobb was removed after five innings to help ease him back in action -- the right-hander had tossed just 67 pitches (42 strikes) before exiting, but it doesn't sound like a setback was involved. He has a 4.94 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 56:15 K:BB in 51 innings across 11 starts overall. Cobb will continue working on stretching out ahead of next week's projected road start in Arizona.
Jun 24 2022Cobb (3-3) took the loss during Friday's 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Reds, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and one walk with four strikeouts in 4.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb surrendered two runs on four hits in the second inning, then was pulled in the fifth with two on and one out after a run scored on an error. Cobb is yet to make it through five innings in two starts since coming off the IL and is averaging 4.2 per start through 10 turns, though his 9.9 K/9 and 3.8 K/BB would both rank in the top 25 if he had enough innings to qualify. The 34-year-old is slated to pitch again versus the White Sox midweek.
Jun 19 2022Cobb allowed two runs on four hits and a walk over four innings in Sunday's loss to the Pirates. He struck out two and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The only damage against Cobb came via the long ball; he coughed up solo home runs to Hoy Park and Jack Suwinski in the third and fourth innings, respectively. It was his first start since May 29 after a stint on the injured list. He threw 37 of 60 pitches for strikes. The 34-year-old is now sporting a 5.62 ERA with a 49:13 K:BB through nine starts. Cobb is expected to face the Reds at home next week, when he'll likely work deeper into the game.
Jun 16 2022The Giants announced that Cobb (neck) will be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Sunday's game against the Pirates in Pittsburgh, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb is on track to return after a minimum-length stay on the IL due to a neck strain. He completed a live batting practice session Tuesday without incident, and the Giants determined after evaluating him a day later that he wouldn't require a rehab assignment before coming off the IL. Prior to sustaining the neck injury, Cobb went 3-2 with a 5.73 ERA and 1.49 WHIP over eight starts spanning 37.2 innings, but a strong 21.3 K-BB% and 2.67 SIERA offer hope that he'll be able to stage a major turnaround in the ratio categories.
Jun 13 2022Cobb (neck) will throw live batting practice Tuesday, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb was scratched from his scheduled June 3 start with what was originally called back tightness, then a hamstring strain and finally a neck strain. A precise timeline for his return has yet to emerge, but the fact that he's ready to pitch to batters certainly seems to be a good sign.
Jun 10 2022Cobb (neck) has resumed playing catch, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb has been sidelined for a week due to a neck strain, but he's been throwing off flat ground early during his IL stint. The right-hander still has several steps to take to ramp up his workload, and it's not yet clear when he'll be able to rejoin the Giants.
Jun 7 2022Cobb (hamstring) was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday, retroactive to June 4, with a neck strain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander was scratched from Friday's start with back tightness only for the injury to be clarified as a left hamstring issue, and he's now on the shelf with a neck strain. Cobb will be eligible to return June 19 in Pittsburgh and could be activated at that point, per Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, so the injury doesn't appear to be a serious concern. Sam Long was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move, though it's unclear who will fill Cobb's spot in the starting rotation.
Jun 3 2022Cobb is dealing with a left hamstring issue but is optimistic he can avoid a stint on the injured list, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was originally reported that he was scratched from Friday's scheduled start with a back issue. Cobb said his left hamstring tightened up earlier this week in Philadelphia and he had sharp pain that kept him from sleeping that night. He said he feels better now but it's unclear when he will make his next start.
May 29 2022Cobb allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out eight in six innings during Sunday's win over the Reds. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb allowed 13 runs on 20 hits in 11.1 innings over his last two starts, but he righted the ship against the Reds' lackluster offense Sunday. However, the right-hander was forced to settle for the no-decision since the Giants failed to record a hit until the top of the seventh inning. Following Cobb's quality start, he has a 5.73 ERA, 47:12 K:BB and 1.49 WHIP in 37.2 innings over his first eight starts of the season. He tentatively lines up to make his next start on the road against Miami on Friday.
May 23 2022Cobb (3-2) took the loss against the Mets on Monday, pitching six innings and allowing six runs on 10 hits and no walks while striking out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Given the fact that New York put up six runs against him, Cobb was surprisingly efficient, throwing 90 pitches (64 of which were strikes) over six frames. He was largely done in by a poor third inning during which the Mets scored five runs. Cobb has given up 13 runs across 11.1 innings over his past two starts to push his season ERA up to an unappealing 6.25. He'll look for a better result in his next start, which is slated to come in Cincinnati this weekend.
May 18 2022Cobb (3-1) picked up the win, allowing seven runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out four in 5.1 innings of a 10-7 victory Tuesday in Colorado. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb pitched fairly well through the first five innings, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk and throwing 70 pitches. The wheels came off in the sixth inning as the first four hitters singled and, following a strikeout, Cobb's night concluded after Randal Grichuk's three-run homer. Luckily for the 34-year-old, the Giants' offense scored 10 times over the first six innings and he exited with a three-run lead. Cobb has been inconsistent over his first six appearances and has an unsightly 5.61 ERA and 1.52 WHIP, but there are some bright spots, most notably 32 strikeouts and only two homers allowed in 25.2 innings.
May 11 2022Cobb (2-1) earned the win after tossing 5.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits and two walks while striking out six against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb held the Rockies scoreless over the first five frames, ultimately getting pulled with one out in the six inning and having one of the runners he left on base come around to score. The 34-year-old has put together two consecutive strong starts after only lasting two-thirds of an inning versus the Nationals on May 1, allowing just three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out 14 over 10.1 frames in those outings. In his first season with the Giants, Cobb owns a 3.98 ERA and 1.38 WHIP with 28 punchouts in 20.1 innings over six starts.
May 7 2022Cobb didn't factor into the decision during Friday's 3-2 loss to St. Louis, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk with eight strikeouts in five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his second start since returning from the IL, Cobb retired the first 10 Cardinals but slowed down from there with the outing ending in a two-run Harrison Bader home run. Manager Gabe Kapler opted to pull Cobb after the fifth despite a reasonable 74 pitches, meaning the 34-year-old has now failed to surpass five innings in each of his four starts. He'll carry a 4.80 ERA and 1.53 WHIP into his next start, tentatively slated to come Wednesday against Colorado.
May 1 2022Cobb (1-1) took the loss during Sunday's 11-5 defeat at the hands of the Nationals, allowing five runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks in two-thirds of an inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his first start since returning from a groin injury, Cobb surrendered two hits before Jason Vosler committed an error and the damage piled on from there. The result was 40 pitches with just 22 strikes while the 34-year-old recorded only two outs as Washington batted around and put up a five spot. Cobb will look to get back on track next weekend in St. Louis.
Apr 30 2022Cobb (groin) will start Sunday against the Nationals, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Reports from Friday indicated that Cobb was likely to return Sunday, and that's now been confirmed by manager Gabe Kapler. He'll wind up missing just over the minimum 10 days with his strained right groin.
Apr 25 2022Cobb (groin) needs at least one more bullpen session before returning from the injured list, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb threw a 30-pitch bullpen session Monday but was only throwing at 70 percent intensity. Whie the session seemingly went well, he'll need to throw at full capacity before the Giants are comfortable activating him. He's eligible to return Saturday, but it looks as though he may need at least a few extra days.
Apr 22 2022Cobb (groin) will begin playing catch Friday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb landed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday due to a Grade 1 groin strain, but he's downplayed the severity of the issue. He's optimistic that he won't require a lengthy stay on the IL, and it's encouraging that he's already resumed playing catch. It's not yet clear whether he'll be able to return when first eligible April 30, but he's unlikely to be sidelined very long.
Apr 20 2022Cobb said Wednesday that he's dealing with a Grade 1 groin strain, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday after exiting his start against the Mets, but he downplayed the severity of the injury Wednesday and said he's hopeful he'll be able to return after a minimal stay on the IL. The Giants haven't yet indicated who will take Cobb's place in the rotation, but the right-hander will be eligible to return as early as April 30.
Apr 19 2022Cobb was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right adductor strain ahead of Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb exited his start during Game 1 of Tuesday's twin bill after 4.1 innings and will now spend some time on the shelf. It's unclear exactly how much time the 34-year-old will miss, though he'll be eligible to be reinstated from the injured list April 30.
Apr 18 2022Cobb and the Giants won't play the Mets on Monday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb was slated to make his second start of the season Monday, but he'll be unable to do so after the game was postponed. The matchup will be made up as part of a doubleheader Tuesday, and Cobb will start in the matinee while Logan Webb starts in the second game, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Apr 12 2022Cobb (1-0) got the win in Tuesday's 13-2 victory over the Padres, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts in five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his San Francisco debut, Cobb and his new team dominated early as he was staked to a 10-1 lead while recording five of his six outs via strikeout after two innings. Due to the blowout, the 34-year-old was afforded the luxury of going the minimum five innings and tossing an easy 83 pitches. He's set to face the Mets in New York on Monday for an encore.
Mar 31 2022Multiple scouts have heard that Cobb, whose fastball averaged 93 mph last season, is hitting 97 mph this spring, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb's four-seamer and sinker each topped out at 95 mph last season, so if he has indeed added a couple ticks to his fastball, he could be in for a career year. The 34-year-old righty was excellent across 93.1 innings last season with the Angels, logging a career-high 16.5 K-BB% and a 53.3 GB%. If he can build back up to the 150-plus innings he logged in 2017 and 2018, Cobb could be one of the best fantasy values on the pitching side this year.
Nov 30 2021Cobb agreed to a two-year, $20 million contract with the Giants on Tuesday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News, the deal includes a $10 million team option for 2024 with a $2 million buyout. Cobb spent 2021 with the Angels and was limited to 18 starts by a wrist injury, but he was effective when healthy with a 3.76 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 98:33 K:BB in 93.1 innings. He should slot into the middle of San Francisco's starting rotation in 2022.
Sep 30 2021Cobb yielded five runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five across five innings during Thursday's loss to the Rangers. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a bit of a clunker for Cobb, who went six consecutive outings without allowing more than one earned run prior to Thursday. All of the right-hander's damage came via long balls, including a three-run homer by DJ Peters in the third and a two-run shot by Adolis Garcia in the fifth frame. Cobb finishes off the regular season with a 3.76 ERA and 1.26 WHIP.
Sep 24 2021Cobb didn't factor into the decision Thursday against the Astros after tossing 5.2 innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out four. He also tossed a wild pitch. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb hasn't completed six innings since returning from the injured list, but he's allowed just one run over 10.2 innings in his past two outings. In fact, he's gone six straight outings without allowing more than one earned run and has gone 3-0 with a blistering 1.02 ERA in that span, though four of those starts came in July before he got injured.
Sep 16 2021Cobb (8-3) tossed five scoreless innings Thursday against the White Sox, yielding two hits and two walks with five strikeouts to pick up the win. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Activated from the injured list earlier in the day, Cobb showed no ill effects from the wrist injury that had sidelined him since late July. He limited the potent White Sox lineup to singles by Leury Garcia and Zack Collins while throwing 42 of his 66 pitches for strikes. Cobb has now put together five consecutive strong outings dating back to the start of July, going 3-0 with a 0.91 ERA and 26:11 K:BB across 29.2 innings. He's tentatively lined up for a difficult home matchup against Houston on Tuesday.
Sep 14 2021Manager Joe Maddon said he hopes Cobb (wrist) is able to start Thursday against the White Sox, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb has apparently checked out OK over the past few days after completing a simulated game Friday, and he's now expected to rejoin the starting rotation. The veteran right-hander has been on the shelf since late July and figures to face some workload limitations in his return to the mound, especially since he's set to return without a rehab assignment.
Sep 10 2021Cobb (wrist) threw a successful simulated game Friday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb recently tossed a pair of bullpen sessions and didn't have any issues while facing hitters for the first time Friday. If he feels good Saturday, manager Joe Maddon said that the right-hander should be cleared to make his next turn in the rotation.
Sep 8 2021Cobb (wrist) has thrown a pair of bullpen sessions and is slated to pitch in a simulated game this weekend, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander hasn't pitched for the Angels since July 23, but there remains hope that he could return to the rotation this season. He may require a minor-league rehab assignment before rejoining the big club, however.
Sep 4 2021Cobb (wrist) threw a bullpen session Saturday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb threw a side session early in the week, and it appears as though he's close to facing hitters. If he feels good following Saturday's activities, he's expected to throw an accelerated sim game in the coming days before the Angels determine his next steps.
Aug 31 2021Cobb (wrist) tossed a 30-pitch bullpen session Monday, the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Angels are still weighing the next steps for Cobb, but since he hasn't made a start since July 23 due to right wrist inflammation, he'll likely need to prove his health during a minor-league rehab assignment or a series of simulated outings before rejoining the big-league rotation. For much of August, the Angels looked to have more than enough depth to cover for Cobb, but his absence looms larger with all of Patrick Sandoval (back), Reid Detmers (COVID-19) and Dylan Bundy (shoulder) joining him on the injured list within the past two weeks. Additionally, Shohei Ohtani's next start is in flux while he manages a right hand injury, and the team lost additional depth when Jose Quintana was claimed off waivers by the Giants on Monday.
Aug 29 2021Cobb (wrist) threw a light bullpen session Wednesday, per MLB.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Initial tests revealed no structural damage to Cobb's right (pitching) wrist, but his recovery has been much slower than expected. The veteran hurler's last game action took place July 23, so he'll likely need considerable time to ramp back into shape before a potential return. Cobb has indicated that he is hopeful he can make it back before the end of the campaign.
Aug 21 2021Cobb (wrist) suffered a setback in his recovery recently, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb played catch Wednesday without experiencing issues, but he'll be shut down indefinitely following his recent setback. Manager Joe Maddon said Saturday that he doesn't know when the right-hander will be able to resume pitching.
Aug 19 2021Cobb (wrist) played catch Wednesday without issues, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb hasn't pitched in nearly a month while dealing with wrist inflammation. Progress had previously been slow, with reports from last week indicating the injury wasn't responding well to treatment. He appears to be turning a corner, though it remains to be seen when he'll be ready for game action.
Aug 14 2021Angels manager Joe Maddon said Thursday that Cobb's injured right wrist has not responded well to treatment and that the right-hander isn't ready to return, per MLB.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: When scans of Cobb's wrist taken shortly after he was placed on the injured list at the end of July revealed no structural damage, the belief was that the veteran hurler would not need an extended absence. That no longer appears to be the case, as Cobb has already been out over two weeks and still hasn't resumed throwing, according to the Associated Press. Cobb could still return to the big club before the end of the month, but only if the injured wrist begins to progress soon.
Jul 31 2021Cobb (wrist) doesn't believe he'll require a long stay on the injured list, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb underwent scans of his wrist which didn't turn up anything too worrisome. He's also no longer dealing with the blisted that forced him to exit his most recent start early. Whether or not he'll be able to return in the minimum 10 days remains to be seen, but it doesn't sound as though he'll be out for an extended period.
Jul 30 2021Cobb was placed on the 10-day injured list with right wrist inflammation Friday, retroactive to July 27. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb was initially diagnosed with a blister on his right index finger, but he's apparently dealing with a wrist injury that will sideline him for at least 10 days. Since the move can was backdated to July 27, he'll be eligible to return late next week, but it's not clear whether he'll be able to do so.
Jul 29 2021Angels manager Joe Maddon said Cobb (finger) won't be able to make his scheduled start Thursday against the Athletics, J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Dylan Bundy will be summoned from the bullpen to make a spot start in place of Cobb, who appears likely to go on the injured list while he tends to a blister on his right index finger. Cobb sustained the injury during his most recent outing July 23 in Minnesota, where he tossed five innings and gave up two runs (one earned) in a no-decision.
Jul 27 2021Manager Joe Maddon said the Angels are optimistic Cobb (finger) will make his next turn through the rotation, J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander exited Friday's start with a blister on his index finger, but he played catch Tuesday and still has a chance of making his next turn through the rotation, which lines up for Thursday versus the A's. Cobb has been pitching well through four starts in July with a 1.09 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 21:9 K:BB across 24.2 innings.
Jul 23 2021Cobb exited Friday's game against Minnesota with a right index finger blister. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb was removed from Friday's matchup while warming up for the sixth inning, and it's not yet clear whether his blister will warrant a trip to the injured list. If the righty is able to make his next turn through the rotation, he tentatively lines up to start at home against the Athletics on Thursday.
Jul 18 2021Cobb (7-3) allowed one earned run on five hits and four walks while striking out six across 6.2 innings, earning the win over the Mariners on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb allowed just one run in the fifth inning after two singles and two walks. Otherwise, he continued his hot streak with just two runs allowed over his last three starts. However, he has walked seven batters over his last two appearances. This season, he has a 3.96 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP with 80 strikeouts over 72.2 innings.
Jul 10 2021Cobb pitched 5.1 innings against Seattle on Friday, allowing two unearned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander needed 97 pitches to get 16 outs, but he may have emerged from the appearance unscathed on the scoreboard if not for a two-out, fourth-inning error that ultimately led to two runs crossing the plate. Cobb induced only six swinging strikes yet managed to strike out five. Since yielding six runs across four frames against Tampa Bay on June 26, he has allowed only one earned run across two starts covering 13 innings. He heads into the All-Star break with a 4.23 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and career-best 10.1 K/9.
Jul 4 2021Cobb (6-3) allowed one earned run on four hits and one walk while striking out six across 7.2 innings, earning the win over the Orioles on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb's only run allowed came in the third inning where Domingo Leyba scored on a fielder's choice. He threw 112 pitches through 7.2 innings in his longest outing of the season. The 33-year-old has been inconsistent of late, giving up just one earned run in three of his past six starts while yielding a total of 16 earned runs across the other three. He has a 4.60 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP with a team-leading six wins overall.
Jun 26 2021Cobb (5-3) gave up six runs on six hits and one walk over four innings in Saturday's loss to Tampa Bay. He had three strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manuel Margot lined a home run to center field off Cobb in the second inning to stake the Rays to a 2-0 lead. Tampa Bay knocked the hurler from the game with four more runs the rest of the way. After a nice string of starts in May, Cobb has now been hammered for five-plus runs in three of his last four outings. He owns a 5.09 ERA and .130 WHIP with a 63:17 K:BB over 53 innings of work.
Jun 18 2021Cobb (5-2) earned the victory over Detroit on Friday, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing one unearned run on three hits and two walks while striking out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb entered the contest having given up five runs in each of his past two outings, but he would have escaped without allowing any runners to cross the plate Friday if not for a sixth-inning error by Jared Walsh that helped the Tigers push across a single tally against him. By that point, the Angels had already notched seven runs and given Cobb all the support he needed to earn his fifth win of the campaign. The right-hander helped himself with eight strikeouts and has unexpectedly blossomed in that category that season, posting over a strikeout per inning for the first time in his 10-year career. That has given him some fantasy relevance despite a pedestrian 4.41 ERA and 1.27 WHIP. Cobb's next start is lined up to come at Tampa Bay next weekend.
Jun 12 2021Cobb hurled three innings against Arizona on Saturday, allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three. He did not actor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander breezed through his first two innings, allowing only one hit. However, things fell apart for Cobb in the third frame, as he gave up six singles, a double and a walk while watching five Diamondbacks cross the plate. He has given up 10 earned runs over his past 10 innings after a strong run during which he yielded only one earned run over 17 frames. The inconsistent play has resulted in a subpar 4.98 ERA, though Cobb's 52:14 K:BB on the season is more promising. He's tentatively slated to face Detroit at home in his next start Friday.
Jun 5 2021Cobb (4-2) won Saturday's 12-5 game over against Seattle, going seven innings and allowing five runs on three hits and a walk with six strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb gave up all five runs in the fourth inning, headlined by a Jake Fraley Grand Slam, and fell behind 5-1 but Los Angeles was able to storm back with 11 unanswered runs. Cobb dominated outside of the that inning, retiring every other batter he faced with six strikeouts, and has now pitched well in consecutive starts.
May 29 2021Cobb (3-2) picked up the win Saturday, allowing three hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings in a 4-0 victory over the A's. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander only fired 58 of 101 pitches for strikes, but Cobb mostly avoided ball fours and got plenty of strike threes in his longest outing, and second quality start, of the season. He's won both his starts since returning to the rotation from the IL, and Cobb will carry a 3.78 ERA and 43:12 K:BB through 33.1 innings into his next turn.
May 20 2021Cobb (2-2) allowed a run on four hits and struck out four over five innings to earn the win in Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader versus Minnesota. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander missed two starts due to a blister, but he was effective in his return. Cobb threw 44 of his 57 pitches for strikes. The only run against Cobb came on a sacrifice fly in the second inning. This was the second time in six starts he did issue a walk. The 33-year-old carries a 4.78 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 35:10 K:BB across 26.1 innings. His next start lines up for next week versus Texas.
May 19 2021Cobb (blister) will be activated from the injured list to start the first game of Thursday's doubleheader against the Twins, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The righty will make his first start since May 4. That last outing was his best of the season, as he went five innings with no earned runs and eight strikeouts, albeit with five walks as well.
May 17 2021Cobb (blister) is making progress and could come off the injured list later this week, the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb hasn't pitched since May 4, when he allowed two unearned runs across five innings and struck out eight batters against Tampa Bay. The right-hander subsequently went on the 10-day IL with the blister issue, which he believes will require management through the remainder of the season, per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. Cobb has blown away his previous career trend with a superb 30.4 percent strikeout rate this season, though his 5.48 ERA is far less promising. However, hitters have logged an absurd .431 BABIP against him, so Cobb's 2.64 xFIP provides reason for optimism if he is able to successfully manage the blister.
May 8 2021Cobb was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with blister on his right middle finger. The move is retroactive to May 5. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 33-year-old lined up to start Monday but will now be on the injured list until at least next weekend. It's unclear when the blister first surfaced, and Cobb pitched well during his last outing Tuesday with only two unearned runs given up across five frames. According to Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times, Jose Suarez could be in the mix to take the mound Monday after being scratched from his scheduled start at Triple-A on Saturday.
May 5 2021Cobb (1-2) was charged with the loss Tuesday against Tampa Bay as a result of allowing two unearned runs on two hits and five walks across five innings. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb struggled with his control in the outing, walking five and throwing only 53 of 99 pitches for strikes. Still, it was the Los Angeles defense that was primarily responsible for both runs that scored against him. A pair of first-inning Angels errors led to an unearned run, and another miscue in the fifth frame led to the second tally against the right-hander. Cobb was able to avoid additional damage by striking out eight batters and allowing only two hits (both singles). He lowered his season ERA to 5.48 ERA in the outing, and he now boasts a 31:10 K:BB across 21.1 frames. Cobb's next start could come Monday at Houston.
Apr 28 2021Cobb allowed three earned runs on six hits and no walks while striking out two across two innings Wednesday against the Rangers. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb couldn't put hitters away and had several lengthy at-bats, which resulted in him being pulled after two innings and 51 pitches of subpar work. This was his second consecutive start in which he failed to escape the third inning, and he now has a 7.16 ERA across 16.1 frames for the season. His indicators suggest that he deserves better results -- he has a 23:5 K:BB and 2.34 FIP -- so he'll look to turn things around in his next outing, which is currently projected for Wednesday against Tampa Bay.
Apr 22 2021Cobb (1-1) was charged with the loss Thursday against the Astros, surrendering five runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out four across 2.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb got off to a rocky first inning, loading the bases on back-to-back singles and a walk with two outs. Luckily, the 33-year-old slammed the door by striking out Kyle Tucker to end the frame. Things proved even tougher in the second inning, during which Cobb allowed the Astros to put three runs on the board, including a triple by Myles Straw and a run walked in. It was a disappointing outing to see after the right-hander had a strong showing his last time around, striking out 10 over 5.2 innings against the Royals on April 12. Cobb will look to bounce back when he takes the mound again Wednesday at Texas.
Apr 12 2021Cobb (1-0) allowed three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out 10 over 5.2 innings in a win over Royals on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb had been pushed back a day due to a rainout, which may have been a blessing as Cobb was said to be managing a blister at the end of last week. He showed no ill effects Monday, getting 19 swinging strikes on 97 pitches. The right-hander has followed in Dylan Bundy's path and is off to a great start with the Angels after finally getting out of Baltimore. With Shohei Ohtani (finger) looking unlikely to start a game on the mound this week, per Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register, Cobb projects to take the ball this weekend at home against Minnesota.
Apr 11 2021Cobb won't make his scheduled start Sunday after the Angels-Blue Jays game was postponed due to inclement weather in Dunedin, Fla. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The two teams plan to make up the game as part of a split doubleheader Aug. 10 at Angel Stadium. According to Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times, the Angels plan to push all six of their rotation members back a day in the pitching schedule as a result of the rainout, so Cobb will start Monday's series opener in Kansas City.
Apr 9 2021Cobb, who is scheduled to start Sunday against the Blue Jays, was dealing with a blister earlier in the week, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: At this point, Cobb is not in danger of missing Sunday's start, but it's worth noting since blisters can re-occur. Cobb was scheduled to start Saturday but was pushed back to give his blister an extra day to heal.
Apr 8 2021Cobb will start Sunday against the Blue Jays, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb will take the spot of Shohei Ohtani (blister), who was scratched from the start. He'll look to follow up on a solid debut with club, when he allowed three earned runs and struck out seven across six innings.
Apr 3 2021Cobb allowed three runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out seven over six innings in a no-decision against the White Sox on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He could not slow down the hit machine that is Yermin Mercedes. However, Cobb limited the damage from the rest of the lineup and provided the Angels with some much-needed length after the bullpen covered six innings in relief of Andrew Heaney on Friday. The 33-year-old righty should still be considered a high-risk fantasy option next week in his projected matchup against the Blue Jays at TD Ballpark in Dunedin, Florida.
Mar 11 2021Cobb pitched three innings in Wednesday's Cactus League contest against Cleveland, allowing one run on two hits and one walk while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com, Cobb's velocity hit 94 mph during the exhibition outing, a slight bump over his average velocity last season. That bodes well for the right-hander's attempt to bounce back after a trio of subpar campaigns. Cobb appears in line for the final spot in the Angels' six-man rotation, but his fantasy value is limited by an unexciting skillset that includes a lack of strikeouts.
Feb 19 2021Cobb visited Driveline Baseball over the offseason and worked on some mechanical changes, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Angels need the 33-year-old to be something other than he's been thus far in his 30s, as he's struggled to a 5.10 ERA over the last three seasons. Driveline has a deserved reputation for making pitchers suddenly more productive, though a trip there doesn't guarantee anyone's problems will be instantly solved. The report perhaps makes Cobb more interesting than most pitchers his age with his recent track record, but he'll have to demonstrate a new level of performance on the field before he becomes a truly compelling fantasy option.
Feb 1 2021The Angels acquired Cobb in a trade with the Orioles on Monday, Dan Connolly and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic report. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The exact terms of the trade remain unknown, but Baltimore is unlikely to get a major prospect in return, assuming the Angels are covering a portion of the $15 million Cobb is owed in 2021. Over his three seasons in Baltimore, Cobb didn't emerge as the frontline starter the Orioles had hoped they were getting after inking him to a four-year, $57 million deal in the 2017-18 offseason. In addition to missing extended time due to injuries, Cobb wasn't particularly effective when he was healthy enough to pitch, submitting a 5.10 ERA (5.22 FIP), 1.42 WHIP and 6.1 K/9 in 41 starts for Baltimore. With his new organization, the 33-year-old right-hander won't be assured a rotation spot, as the Angels already have Dylan Bundy, Shohei Ohtani, Andrew Heaney, Griffin Canning and Jose Quintana on hand as starting candidates.
Sep 24 2020Cobb (2-5) picked up the win in Thursday's 13-1 rout of the Red Sox, allowing one run on six hits and two walks over seven innings, He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander gave up his only run in the fifth inning, at which point the O's already held an 8-0 lead. Cobb finished the season on a high note, delivering quality starts in each of his final two outings, and with one year remaining on his current contract his 4.30 ERA and 38:18 K:BB through 52.1 innings should keep him in Baltimore's rotation plans to begin 2021.
Sep 19 2020Cobb (1-5) allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five across six innings as he took the loss Friday against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb was able to keep his team in the game the whole way through as his only mistakes were allowing RBI singles to Nate Lowe in the first inning and Brandon Lowe in the third inning. Unfortunately for him, Tyler Glasnow and the Rays' bullpen were locked in all night and would only allow the Orioles to muster up one run on the night. Cobb has not won a game since his first start of the season but has kept his numbers in check with a 4.76 ERA and 1.37 WHIP across 45.1 innings. The southpaw is set to take the mound Thursday in a road matchup against the Red Sox.
Sep 11 2020Cobb (1-4) took the loss in the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the Yankees, coughing up five runs on seven hits -- including three home runs -- and a walk over four innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander's first start since Aug. 29 went poorly to say the least, as the Yankees took Cobb deep twice in the first inning before he was able to record an out. It's the first time in eight outings he's served up multiple homers, and the rough return to action pushed his ERA above 5.00 for the first time this season.
Sep 10 2020Cobb (undisclosed) will start Friday's game against the Yankees, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb was placed on the injured list for an undisclosed reason Sept. 4, but manager Brandon Hyde said that he'll take the mound Friday if he clears intake protocols. The right-hander has struggled a bit over his last three starts, recording a 6.32 ERA and 1.66 WHIP over 15.2 innings during that time.
Sep 9 2020Manager Brandon Hyde hopes Cobb (undisclosed) will return from the injured list by the end of the week, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander was a late scratch for his scheduled start last Friday due to the unspecified issue, but the potential for a quick return from the injured list likely means it's related to the league's protocols for issues involving exposure to COVID-19. The Orioles have confirmed their starting pitchers through Thursday, so Cobb could be reinstated to start as early as Friday against the Yankees.
Sep 4 2020Cobb was placed on the injured list for unspecified reasons Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 32-year-old was scheduled to start Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader against the Yankees, but he's now sidelined by the undisclosed issue. Given the lack of information regarding his status, it's unclear when Cobb is expected to return.
Aug 29 2020Cobb (1-3) allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out two across four innings to take the loss Saturday against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb ran into trouble immediately, getting two outs in the first inning before allowing three consecutive batters to reach base and two runners to cross the plate. He settled in until the fourth frame, when he was tagged for three additional runs -- only two of which were earned. Cobb has largely been effective this season, surrendering three or fewer earned runs in five of his seven starts. On the other hand, he's now been charged with 11 runs across his last last three outings, spanning 15.2 frames. Overall, he has a 4.33 ERA with a 24:12 K:BB across 35.1 innings for the season. Cobb is in line to take his next turn through the rotation Friday against the Yankees.
Aug 22 2020Cobb allowed two earned runs on six hits and a walk while striking out one across five innings Saturday against the Red Sox. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb threw four clean innings, only running into trouble in his final frame when he surrendered a solo home run to Jackie Bradley, then consecutive doubles to account for his two earned runs. While he wasn't particularly deceptive, Cobb stayed out of trouble by recording nine groundball outs. Cobb has bounced back to start the campaign, earning a 3.73 ERA across six starts and 31.1 innings. He's currently projected to take his next turn through the rotation Friday at Toronto.
Aug 18 2020Cobb (1-2) took the loss Monday as the Orioles fell 7-2 to the Blue Jays, coughing up five runs on eight hits and a walk over 6.2 innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While this was Cobb's longest outing yet in 2020, there weren't many other positives to take away from this performance. The right-hander threw 57 of 88 pitches for strikes, and the big blow against him was a three-run blast in the third inning by Randal Grichuk, the fourth homer Cobb has served up in only 26.1 innings. He'll carry a 3.76 ERA into his next start Saturday, at home against the Red Sox.
Aug 11 2020Cobb allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out two across 5.1 innings Tuesday against the Phillies. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb mowed down the first six batters he faced, with only one ball leaving the infield. While he was brushed up a bit in the third inning, the only major damage was done on a solo home run by Jay Bruce to lead off the fifth frame. Cobb threw 71 pitches -- 49 of which went for strikes -- but was able to work efficiently by generating 11 groundouts. He has maintained a 2.75 ERA across 19.2 frames, though his 17:8 K:B suggests trouble may on the horizon. Cobb is scheduled to take his next turn through the rotation Sunday against the Nationals.
Aug 5 2020Cobb (0-1) took the loss during Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Marlins after allowing two runs on one hits with seven strikeouts and three walks over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The only scoring of the game came on Brian Anderson's fourth-inning, solo homer, but that one swing proved to be enough to saddle Cobb with the loss. The right-hander hasn't been able to work deep into games through his first three starts with only 14.1 innings pitched, but he still has a 2.50 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 15:6 K:BB. He's next scheduled to take the mound next week in Philadelphia.
Jul 31 2020Cobb didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 6-3 win over the Rays, giving up two runs on four hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander got enough run support to pick up the win, as the O's launched three homers on the night, but Cobb couldn't last long enough to qualify -- he needed a whopping 87 pitches (53 strikes) just to record 12 outs. Through two starts to begin the season he has an encouraging 2.89 ERA and 8:3 K:BB over 9.1 innings. Cobb will face a tough challenge in his next outing, however, at home against the Yankees on Wednesday.
Jul 25 2020Cobb (1-0) earned the win against the Red Sox on Saturday after allowing one run on four hits and zero walks while striking out six over 5.1 innings ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander cruised through five frames with a three-hit shutout, but he was pulled at 78 pitches with one out during the sixth inning after surrendering a solo homer to Mitch Moreland. It's his first victory since 2018 after making just three starts last season before going down with an injury. Cobb will look to secure his second victory of the young season Friday against the Rays.
Jul 22 2020Cobb will start in Saturday's game against the Red Sox, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb had a locked in rotation spot as he built up his endurance for the shortened 2020 season, and he'll start behind Tommy Milone in the team's opening series. The 32-year-old dealt with back and hip injuries in 2019 that limited him to just three starts over the season, but he appears to be back to full health heading into this season. Over 31 starts in the last two seasons with the Orioles, Cobb has 5-17 record with a 5.36 ERA and 110:45 K:BB over 164.2 innings.
Jul 6 2020Cobb threw four innings of live batting practice Monday at Oriole Park, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb and Wade LeBlanc each threw four innings as they ramp up their workloads in this controlled environment. The 32-year-old righty has a locked in spot in Baltimore's rotation. He is coming off a lost 2019 season where he only made three MLB starts due to back and hip issues.
Mar 15 2020Cobb (finger) completed a simulated game Thursday, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb developed a blister earlier in the week that resulted in him being scratched from his scheduled Grapefruit League outing, but his ability to face hitters in a controlled setting implies that the affected finger isn't much of a concern. With the MLB regular season having now been pushed back at least two weeks, Cobb's blister should be completely healed by the time the Orioles reconvene for workouts.
Mar 11 2020Cobb was scratched from his scheduled start Thursday against the Twins due to a blister, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Blisters tend to come with uncertain timelines, but the Orioles don't seem particularly concerned with this one. Cobb will pitch in a simulated game instead, and manager Brandon Hyde indicated the right-hander would be able to pitch through the issue if it occurred during the regular season. It doesn't sound as though Cobb is under any serious risk of opening the season on the injured list.
Feb 7 2020Cobb (hip) will not have any restrictions when the Orioles report to spring training Tuesday, Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cobb underwent hip surgery in June but will not be limited for spring training according to manager Brandon Hyde. Despite throwing only 12.1 innings and accruing a 10.95 ERA in 2019, Cobb is expected to open the season as the team's second starter.

Jul 21 2018Cobb fell to 2-13 on the season after allowing four runs (one earned) Saturday against the Blue Jays, striking out four while allowing four hits and three walks.Cobb got through three scoreless innings without really being threatened before a three-run fourth inning in which Tim Beckham's error played a key role. The fact that three of the runs were unearned means that the start lowered Cobb's ERA to a still-ugly 6.17. He'll try to lower that figure against Thursday against the Rays.
Jul 13 2018Cobb (2-12) allowed two runs on six hits while striking out three across 6.1 innings as he took the loss Friday against Texas.Cobb was lifted in a 1-1 game with one out in the seventh inning, but Tanner Scott would come on in relief to surrender a three-run home run, leaving Cobb on the hook for the loss. The 30-year-old right-hander has looked anything but himself in 2018, a year after posting a decent 12-10 record with a 3.66 ERA: he's accrued an alarming 6.41 ERA and 1.58 WHIP with a 63:25 K:BB over 92.2 innings this season.
Jul 11 2018Cobb (finger) will take the mound Friday against the Rangers, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports. As expected, Cobb will not miss a start after leaving Sunday's outing with the Twins due to a callus issue on his finger. During that contest, Cobb allowed five earned runs on seven hits and one walk across five innings, saddling him with the loss. That raised his ERA to a miserable 6.67 on the year through 16 starts.
Jul 9 2018While it was reported that Cobb left Sunday's start with a blister, manager Buck Showalter said it is actually more of a callous and he is not expected to miss his next start, Rich Dubroff of PressBoxonline.com reports. He will need to make it through his side session OK before the club confirms him for his next start, but for now Cobb is expected to take the hill Friday against the Rangers. Regardless of whether it is a callous or a blister, Cobb's 6.57 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 8.9 K-BB% should scare away most fantasy owners.
Jul 8 2018Cobb (2-11) surrendered four runs on seven hits and one walk while fanning five over five innings, as he took the loss Sunday against the Twins. After the game, it was discovered that he has a blister on his right index finger, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.Cobb's struggles continued in his latest outing, as he was lifted from the game with a 4-0 deficit. The 30-year-old has failed to notch a win since June 5, and to top it off, it was revealed he's dealing with a blister on his pitching hand, although he doesn't think it'll keep him from making his next scheduled start, per Kubatko. Through 86.1 innings this season, Cobb has accrued a disastrous 6.57 ERA and 1.62 WHIP with opposing hitters batting .318 against him.
Jul 3 2018Cobb (2-10) gave up three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five in 6.2 innings Tuesday in Philadelphia. He took the loss.Cobb now has five quality starts in his last 10 outings, but when he gets hit, he gets hit hard, keeping his season ERA north of 6.50 over that stretch. His next start should come Sunday in Minnesota.
Jun 27 2018Cobb didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 8-7 extra-innings loss to the Mariners, giving up five runs on eight hits and three walks over 4.2 innings while striking out only one.The right-hander wasn't fooling anyone Wednesday, managing only four swinging strikes among his 92 pitches, and Cobb exited the game in line for his 10th loss of the season before a Baltimore rally in the eighth inning got him off the hook. He'll carry a bloated 6.75 ERA into his next outing Tuesday in Philadelphia.
Jun 22 2018Cobb didn't factor into the decision in Friday's extra-innings win over the Braves, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over seven innings while striking out six.The right-hander threw 70 of 107 pitches for strikes in delivering his sixth quality start of the season, but Cobb exited the game with the score knotted at 1-1 before both bullpens fell apart, leaving to an eventual 10-7 final in 15 innings. He'll carry a 6.56 ERA into his next outing Wednesday at home against the Mariners.
Jun 16 2018Cobb (2-9) was hit with the loss Saturday against the Marlins, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks across seven innings. He struck out six.J.T. Realmuto took Cobb deep twice and drove in four of the five runs charged against the right-hander Saturday. Cobb has now allowed 14 runs over his last two starts (10.2 innings) after showing signs of turning things around (three quality starts in his previous four outings). The 30-year-old will carry an unsightly 7.14 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 6.1 K/9 into his next outing, which will come on the road against a difficult Nationals team.
Jun 10 2018Cobb (2-8) surrendered nine runs on 11 hits and one walk while striking out five across 3.2 innings Sunday as he took the loss against the Blue Jays.Cobb allowed two runs in the second inning, followed by another in the third and six in the fourth before being chased from a disastrous outing. He'd been decent in his prior two starts, surrendering four runs with 10 strikeouts across 13 innings, but he turned in his worst performance of the year Sunday. Cobb sits with an ugly 7.23 ERA and 1.77 WHIP with a 37:14 K:BB over 56 innings this season.
Jun 5 2018Cobb (2-7) tossed six one-run innings while earning the win Tuesday against the Mets, allowing two hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.Cobb only allowed hits in one inning on the day, with both proceeding a sacrifice fly from Jose Bautista in the fifth inning. He mostly pitched to contact but was able to rack up a solid strikeout total due to 15 swinging strikes. Cobb's quality start was his third in the last four outings, and the K:BB ratio was his best of the season. He still has an unsightly 6.19 ERA for the season, but he's allowed three runs or fewer in six of his last seven starts ahead of this weekend's scheduled start against the Blue Jays.
Jun 3 2018Cobb will make his next start Tuesday against the Mets, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports. The Orioles could have reshuffled their rotation after Cobb's start Sunday against the Yankees was postponed due to inclement weather, but manager Buck Showalter has opted to push each starter back a day in the schedule to keep the current pitching order intact. After an off day Monday, Cobb will return to the mound Tuesday on seven days' rest, representing his longest break between starts this season.
Jun 3 2018Cobb's scheduled start Sunday against the Yankees was postponed due to inclement weather in New York. The Orioles and Yankees will make up the contest Aug. 25 as part of a split doubleheader. Baltimore has yet to announce how the postponement will affect its pitching schedule during the upcoming week, but Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports speculates that manager Buck Showalter will simply move each of the rotation members back a day. If that proves to be the case, Cobb would take the hill for the Orioles' first game of the week Tuesday against the Mets.
May 28 2018Cobb (1-7) took the loss Monday against the Nationals, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks across seven innings. He struck out three.Cobb's struggles with the long ball continued -- a three-run homer from Anthony Rendon in the third inning accounted for all of the runs against him and brought his HR/9 rate to 1.75 on the season -- but Monday was a nice bounce-back effort for the most part, as the 30-year-old completed seven innings for the first time all season after allowing six runs across just 3.2 innings in his previous start. While the right-hander now owns an unsightly 6.80 ERA and 1.81 ERA through nine starts this season, he's put together four quality efforts across six starts in May, suggesting he could be working past his early season woes. He'll look to build off of Monday's quality effort in his next start, which is set for a difficult home matchup against the Yankees.
May 24 2018Cobb was hammered for six runs on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts over just 3.2 innings Wednesday against the White Sox.Cobb just couldn't miss bats, as he mustered just four swinging strikes in 81 pitches and was touched up for a three-run home run by Yoan Moncada. Cobb has now surrendered four home runs in his past three starts, giving him eight allowed in as many outings this season. Since coming back from Tommy John surgery in 2016, Cobb has had a home run issue, as he has now allowed 28 homers in 204 innings since his return, a 1.2 HR/9 that sits at nearly double the 0.7 HR/9 he owned in his first four major league seasons.
May 18 2018Cobb (1-5) picked up the win over the Red Sox on Friday, allowing three runs on 10 hits and a walk over 6.1 innings while striking out three. The right-hander was far from dominant, but a four-run outburst by the Orioles' bats in the fourth inning was more than enough to get Cobb his first win of the season. After a brutal beginning to 2018 he's now delivered quality starts in three of his last four outings, and he'll take a 6.56 ERA into his next start Wednesday on the road against the White Sox.
May 12 2018Cobb (0-5) took the loss in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Rays, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits over 5.2 innings while striking out five. The right-hander allowed runs in each of his first four innings, including solo shots by C.J. Cron and Brad Miller, before getting the hook after throwing only 69 pitches (45 strikes). Cobb actually lowered his ERA to 7.06 with this performance, making him an extremely risky play in his next outing Thursday on the road against the Red Sox.
May 6 2018Cobb (0-4) allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out five across six innings as he took the loss Sunday against the Athletics.Cobb has put together back-to-back quality starts, although he continues to search for his first win of the year. His offense failed him Sunday as the Orioles were able to push across just one run in the second inning on a Pedro Alvarez solo home run. Despite solid performances in his last two outings, Cobb sits with a 7.61 ERA and 2.03 WHIP as a result of a disastrous start to the season. His next appearance figures to come Saturday against the Rays.
May 2 2018Cobb allowed two runs on seven hits and a pair of walks while striking out two over six innings in Tuesday's loss to the Angels. He did not factor into the decision. After getting shelled each of his first three times out, it was reassuring to see Cobb finally settle down and start to resemble his former self. The lack of strikeouts remain a bit of a concern -- he now has just six in 17.2 innings -- but after allowing 10 hits and at least five runs in every start prior to Tuesday, any sign of improvement is a welcome sight. Despite the much improved outing, the 30-year-old isn't out of the woods yet; he's still sporting an ugly 9.68 ERA and remains in search of his first win. He'll get another crack at that Sunday against the Athletics.
Apr 25 2018Cobb (0-3) took the loss Wednesday, allowing five runs on 10 hits and a walk over 4.2 innings against the Rays. He did not record a strikeout. It's been an ugly start for Cobb, and things didn't get any easier in his first start against his former club. He's now failed to make it out of the fifth inning and conceded 10 hits in all three starts, and this was the second of the three in which he didn't record a strikeout. It's tempting to blame the early season struggles on the fact that he remained unsigned until late March and thus got a very late start to the spring, but Cobb has just looked completely overmatched in all three outings. It'll be tough to place much trust in him until he demonstrates he's begun to right the ship, which he'll aim to do Tuesday against a potent Angels lineup.
Apr 24 2018Cobb won't make his scheduled start Tuesday against the Rays as the game was postponed due to poor weather, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Additional information regarding when Cobb will next take the mound should be available soon. To make up for Tuesday's postponed outing, the Orioles and Rays will play a doubleheader on May 12.
Apr 24 2018Cobb will start Wednesday's game against the Rays, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports. The Orioles will keep their rotation in order following Tuesday's postponement, so Cobb will slide back to start Wednesday while Dylan Bundy takes the ball for Thursday's series finale against the Rays. Cobb will look to turn things around in his third start of the season, as he's allowed 15 runs (12 earned) through his first two outings with the Orioles.
Apr 19 2018Cobb (0-2) was hit with the loss after allowing seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits and one walk across 3.1 innings Thursday against the Tigers. He stuck out four batters.Cobb's tenure with the Orioles is off to a rocky start, as he's now allowed 15 runs (12 earned) through just seven innings across his first two starts. He's struggled mightily so far this season -- allowing 10 hits and failing to make it out of the fourth inning in both outings -- but he's still likely working out some kinks after signing late in spring training, so things will hopefully turn around as he settles in. Cobb's next start is scheduled for Tuesday against his former team, the Rays.
Apr 14 2018Cobb was recalled from Double-A Bowie on Saturday. This was a formality, as it had already been announced that Cobb would make his Orioles debut Saturday opposite the Red Sox's Hector Velazquez. Unsigned late into spring training, Cobb needed some extra time to ramp up his throwing. It will be interesting to see if he throws his curveball more and his changeup less this season, as he did late in 2017 to notable success.
Apr 14 2018Cobb (0-1) was shelled for eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits and a walk in just 3.2 innings pitched Saturday against the Red Sox. He was stuck with the loss. This was the right-hander's first start of the season, and it really showed. Cobb fill up the zone, throwing nearly 70 percent of his pitches for strikes, but had trouble missing bats. He also was stung by the home-run ball, as both Hanley Ramirez and J.D. Martinez took him deep. Cobb held a career 3.50 ERA prior to this matchup, so he'll look to get back to his regular form in his next scheduled start Thursday in Detroit.
Apr 9 2018Cobb will start Saturday's game against the Red Sox, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.Cobb has been cleared to make his 2018 big-league debut after tossing six innings in a game at extended spring training Monday. The 30-year-old allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out eight batters on 93 pitches. He'll look to pick up where he left off in 2017, as the veteran right-hander posted a 3.66 ERA across 29 starts.
Mar 31 2018Cobb will not make his debut until April 14 against the Red Sox, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.Cobb, who signed with the Orioles late in March, continues to build up his arm strength as he readies for his season debut. He recently completed a three inning simulated game, but Baltimore wants him to pitch five or six innings in a minor-league game before joining the big club, so his first start for the Orioles will now come a week later than initially anticipated.
Mar 26 2018Cobb tossed a three-inning simulated game Sunday, tossing approximately 60 pitches during the outing, Jon Meoli of The Baltimore Sun reports.Orioles manager Buck Showalter relayed that Cobb's velocity was "strong" during the outing and that the right-hander remains on track to make his regular-season debut as early as April 9. Until that date, Cobb will continue to build up his arm in the minors, with the 28-year-old slated to cover four innings later this week before likely reporting to Double-A Bowie in early April for a five- or six-inning start. The Orioles are expected to deploy either Mike Wright or Miguel Castro as their fifth starter until Cobb is ready to slot into the big-league rotation.
Mar 23 2018Cobb's Orioles debut could come on April 9 against the Blue Jays, Eduardo A. Encina of The Baltimore Sun reports. That timeline would see Cobb skip his first two turns in the rotation but be back for the Orioles' 11th game. Cobb was a very late signing for the Orioles, only joining the team on March 20, so he'll need the chance to get up to speed with a few starts in the minors before he's ready to go.
Mar 21 2018Cobb will begin the 2018 season with a minor-league affiliate of the Orioles in order to build up his arm strength, Eduardo A. Encina of The Baltimore Sun reports.Cobb agreed to a four-year deal with Baltimore on Tuesday. While he's in position to be the team's ace for the upcoming campaign, he will need to stretch out in the minors for a couple games before making his debut with the Orioles at the major-league level since there isn't enough time left in spring training for him to get up to speed. At this point, there hasn't been a set date on his return to the majors, but a clearer picture should come into focus after he takes the mound in the minors.
Mar 20 2018Cobb is nearing a deal with the Orioles on Tuesday, Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports. It's possibly one of the worst landing spots for Cobb, as Baltimore plays in a hitter-friendly park and has a team which appears unlikely to pad his win total. Still, it's miles better than remaining unsigned. It's unclear how quickly Cobb could be ready for game action after signing, though it's likely he'd miss at least a start or two.
Mar 20 2018Cobb and the Orioles agreed to terms on a four-year contract worth $60 million Tuesday, Jon Heyman of FanRagSports.com reports. It was recently reported that Baltimore was the leading candidate to sign Cobb. Those plans seem to have come to fruition, as Cobb is remaining in the AL East on a four-year deal with the Orioles. He'll give the their rotation a significant boost, as he's coming off a season in which he logged a 3.66 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over 29 starts (179.1 innings). While his control was sound (2.2 BB/9), Cobb's subpar 6.4 K/9 left much to be desired in terms of strikeouts. However, with a 7.3 K/9 over his career, it's possible that Cobb could see improvement in that regard. Due to how late Cobb signed with a club, it's unclear if he'll be available by Opening Day, but more information should be available in the near future.
Mar 8 2018Cobb has been unable to find a team offering him a contract for more than three years as teams feel he hasn't come down enough in price for a deal to make sense, the Boston Globe reports.Cobb would appear to be a great fit for teams needing help in the rotation such as Milwaukee and Minnesota, but there have been few concrete reports of his possible destination. If he doesn't sign very soon and begin spring training, he's in danger of missing the start of the regular season.
Dec 9 2017The Cubs are interested in signing Cobb, per a source , Bruce Levine of CBS Chicago reports. The Cobb-to-the-Cubs rumor has been out there for a few months, and with the Winter Meetings opening up Monday, Chicago will look to lock up the right-hander before any other suitors pop up.
Nov 16 2017Cobb did not accept Tampa Bay's qualifying offer, and will officially hit the free-agent market, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Cobb will look for a multi-year deal in the open market this winter after declining the $17.4 million offer, which comes on the heels of earning just $12.2 million combined during the last three years with the Rays. The 30-year-old started 29 games this past season, and recorded a 3.66 ERA and 1.22 WHIP, with a 128:44 K:BB over the course of 179.1 innings. Wherever he winds up, Cobb will be a key cog in that organization's rotation.
Nov 5 2017Cobb will receive a qualifying offer from the Rays, Jon Heyman of FanRagSports.com reports.Cobb finished the year with a 3.66 ERA over 179.1 innings pitched, seemingly deserving of the $17.4M offer. The Rays will expect the 30-year-old to be a key contributor in their starting rotation if he chooses to accept the offer.
Sep 26 2017Cobb will have his final start of the season skipped, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Cobb was scheduled to take on the Yankees on Thursday, but manager Kevin Cash has decided to shut down the 29-year-old during the final week of the season to ensure that he closes out the year with a clean bill of health. In his first full season back following Tommy John surgery, Cobb posted a solid 3.66 ERA (4.15 FIP) over 179.1 innings, which was the highest workload of his career. Jacob Faria will now start Thursday's game in his place.
Sep 24 2017Cobb is likely to skip his last scheduled start of the season this coming Thursday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Cobb has fired a career-high 179.1 innings this season in what is his first full campaign since Tommy John surgery. The 29-year-old right hander has provided mostly encouraging results, posting a 12-10 record, 3.66 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. Cobb played the 2017 campaign on a one-year, $4.2 million contract, so it remains to be seen if he's tossed his last game in a Rays uniform.
Sep 22 2017Cobb (12-10) allowed three runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out four across six innings to earn the victory Friday against the Orioles.Cobb was staked to an early 6-2 lead, and he fired a quality start, leading to his 12th victory of the campaign. He hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in any of his last seven starts, and he's been a solid fantasy option down the stretch. He'll make his next start Thursday against the Yankees.
Sep 16 2017Cobb (11-10) earned the loss after allowing three runs on six hits while striking out five batters in 5.1 innings Saturday against the Red Sox.Cobb couldn't beat the Red Sox for a second consecutive outing, marking his first loss in three September starts, a stretch over which he owns a 2.81 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 17:5 K:BB in 16 innings. The 29-year-old, who is set to become a free agent in the offseason, has enjoyed a nice bounce back campaign after registering just 22 innings over the past two seasons following Tommy John surgery. He owns a solid 3.63 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 173.1 innings this season, with a 3.41 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 10 starts (58 innings) since the All-Star break. Cobb projects to make his next start against the Orioles on Friday.
Sep 10 2017Cobb (11-9) delivered five one-run innings while earning a win Sunday against the Red Sox, allowing four hits with three walks and five strikeouts.Cobb labored in the second inning when he gave up the opening run, but he was able to escape the jam before finishing with three scoreless frames. He came back out for the sixth but was removed after allowing the first two men to reach. Nevertheless, the bullpen closed out Cobb's second win in as many starts, giving him 11 for the season to level him with his career high. He has allowed one run or fewer in four of his last five starts and will take a sharp 3.59 ERA into Saturday's start against the Red Sox.
Sep 4 2017Cobb (10-9) held the Twins to one run on three hits and two walks while striking out seven over 5.2 innings to earn the win Monday night.Cobb has held opponents to one run or fewer in five of his past eight starts, all since the All-Star break, but unfortunately he is just 3-3 in that stretch. His control has been his best asset of late, as Cobb has walked just 10 batters in those starts against 38 strikeouts over 47.2 innings. Monday's effort brought his ERA down to 3.64.
Aug 30 2017Cobb (9-9) was saddled with the loss Tuesday against the Royals, allowing three runs on seven hits over six innings while striking out six.The right-hander threw 63 of 85 pitches for strikes, but living in the zone ended up costing him as both Whit Merrifield and Jorge Bonifacio took him deep. Cobb's now deliver five quality starts in seven second-half outings heading into Monday's home matchup against the Twins.
Aug 24 2017Cobb (toe) was activated from the disabled list and will start Thursday against the Blue Jays.As expected, Cobb returns to the active roster in time for Thursday's home matchup with Tom Koehler and the Jays. He bypassed a rehab assignment, showing enough in a live BP session last weekend to warrant activation. Cobb has had a few blowups this season, but all of those have come on the road (2.49 ERA at Tropicana Field).
Aug 24 2017Cobb (toe) allowed four hits and one walk over 4.1 scoreless innings in a no-decision against the Blue Jays on Thursday. He struck out five.Making his return following a two-and-a-half-week stint on the DL, Cobb was able to keep the Blue Jays off the board, but he wasn't especially efficient with his 94 pitches (53 strikes). He induced just six swinging strikes and his swinging-strike rate for the season remains a career low, but Cobb has been great in terms of run prevention at home. Unfortunately, his next start comes on the road (4.94 road ERA) in Kansas City.
Aug 22 2017Cobb (toe) stated that he is "good to go" and ready to start Thursday against the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Cobb has been out since Aug. 5 but will make his return to the rotation without making a rehab start. The 29-year-old right-hander turned in a quality start against the Brewers in his last start before the injury, firing six innings of one-hit ball.
Aug 19 2017Cobb (toe) will return to the rotation without making a rehab start, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports. He threw live batting practice prior to Saturday's game, and apparently looked good enough that the Rays are ready to thrust him back into the rotation. It is unclear exactly where he slots in, but a return Thursday against the Blue Jays seems like the most likely scenario. Either way, he can be deployed next week in weekly leagues.
Aug 16 2017Cobb (toe) felt "very good" while throwing a bullpen session at Tropicana Field on Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The session consisted of approximately 40 pitches, so it was certainly long enough for Cobb to put his toe to the test. Manager Kevin Cash reported that the next step would be to see how the right-hander felt 24 hours later. The plan remains for Cobb to return to the rotation at some point next week.
Aug 15 2017Manager Kevin Cash said Cobb (toe) had a good day Tuesday, and could return to mound work as early as Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. If Cobb is feeling well again Wednesday, he'll likely throw off a mound for the first time since landing on the disabled list a week ago. Barring any setbacks, this would line him up for a return to the big-league rotation sometime next week.
Aug 14 2017Cobb (toe) will not return from the 10-day disabled list this coming Wednesday as originally hoped, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The pain in the right-hander's big toe has lingered longer than originally expected, leading to the change in timeline. Cobb had originally planned to pitch through the injury, so Sunday's news underscores how unrealistic that goal likely was. Another update on Cobb's condition should be available at some point during the coming week.
Aug 8 2017Cobb was placed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday with turf toe in his right big toe. It's not entirely clear when the injury cropped up on Cobb as he threw six innings of one-run ball during his last outing, but the issue is serious enough to warrant a stay on the DL. The move is retroactive to Aug. 6, making him eligible to return Aug. 16 if he's ready by then. Blake Snell was recalled from Triple-A and will take his turn in the rotation for the time being.
Aug 8 2017Cobb (toe) said he expects to return from the disabled list after the minimum 10-day stay, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Cobb said he could have ultimately pitched through the issue, but the Rays decided to take care of it before it possibly got worse. With the new 10-day DL, the 29-year-old would only have to miss one start if he in fact does return when he is first eligible (Aug. 16). In the meantime, Blake Snell will take his turn in the rotation.
Aug 5 2017Cobb (9-8) allowed one run on five hits and one walk while striking out six across six innings to take the loss Saturday against the Brewers.Cobb gave up a solo homer to Hernan Perez and he wasn't provided a single run of support, leading him to the tough-luck loss. This was the fourth time over his last six starts that he's held opponents to one or fewer earned runs, and although he's prone to the occasional rough outing, he clearly has upside as a fantasy option. He'll make his next start Friday against the Indians.
Jul 31 2017Cobb (9-7) lasted just three innings and surrendered eight runs on nine hits and two walks in a loss Monday to the Astros.Cobb was an on absolute roll entering this start, having fired four consecutive quality starts with a 3-0 record and a 1.48 ERA. The Astros have that effect on pitchers, entering as one of just two American League teams scoring more than five runs per game along with the Yankees. This is already the 26th time the Astros have pinned eight runs on a team, so while Cobb is surely smarting after the beating he took Monday night, he is far from alone this season.
Jul 26 2017Cobb gave up one run on four hits and one walk while striking out six over seven innings Wednesday against the Orioles en route to picking up his ninth win of the season. It was sweet revenge for Cobb, who now has eight quality starts in his last nine outings, with the lone blemish coming against this same O's team in Baltimore back on July 2. He has a 2.24 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 64.1 innings over that span, tallying double-digit groundouts in seven of those nine starts. He lines up for a two step next week, starting Monday in Houston and next Saturday at home against the Brewers.
Jul 21 2017Cobb gave up three runs on five hits while striking out four over eight-plus innings but didn't factor into the decision in Friday's extra-inning loss to the Rangers. He carries a 3-1 lead into the top of the ninth inning but got the hook after allowing a Joey Gallo double and game-tying home run to Shin-Soo Choo before he could record an out. Cobb has now delivered seven quality starts in his last eight trips to the mound, posting a 2.35 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 32:11 K:BB in 57.1 innings over that stretch. His next outing will come Wednesday at home against the Orioles.
Jul 15 2017Cobb (8-6) surrendered just one earned run on six hits over 7.2 innings against the Angels on Saturday, picking up his eighth win on the season.Cobb silenced the Angels' bats for seven innings, allowing only a solo home run to Luis Valbuena, before getting into trouble by allowing a double to Kole Calhoun and a walk to Mike Trout in the eighth. Reliever Brad Boxberger was able to quell the threat, however, before Jumbo Diaz slammed the door in the ninth. Ignoring a disastrous outing two weeks ago against Baltimore, Cobb owns a 0.90 ERA over his last four starts and leads the team with a 1.24 WHIP. Although his 5.85 K/9 leaves something to be desired, it's been a nice comeback season for the right-hander after he missed most of the past two years while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Jul 8 2017Cobb (7-6) tossed 7.2 scoreless innings in a win over the Red Sox on Saturday. He gave up two hits and one walk while striking out three. He was helped out by a couple outstanding defensive plays by shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria, but Cobb was excellent in his own right. It was nice to see after Cobb gave up six earned runs against the Orioles his last time out. That outing and a nine-run blowup against Seattle on June 3 demonstrate the downside in certain matchups, but Cobb was good far more often than he was bad in the first half. He has plenty of appeal even if the strikeouts are lacking.
Jul 2 2017Cobb gave up seven runs (six earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out three over 6.1 innings against the Orioles on Sunday. He also hit a batter, so seven of the eight baserunners he allowed came around to score. Manny Machado and Mark Trumbo each took Cobb deep. This snapped a streak of four straight quality starts for the 29-year-old righty. His next start will be Saturday at home agains the Red Sox.
Jun 27 2017Cobb tossed eight scoreless innings in Tuesday's no-decision against the Pirates, allowing two hits and one walk with four strikeouts.Cobb was lights out in this one, completing six one-two-three innings and allowing just one man to pass first base. He was on the hook for a win when he departed prior to the ninth inning, but a pair of late runs charged to the bullpen rained on that parade. Regardless, this was Cobb's finest outing of the season and his ERA now sits at a respectable 3.73. The right-hander has thrown four consecutive quality starts heading into Sunday's matchup with the Orioles.
Jun 20 2017Cobb (6-5) allowed two runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out six over seven innings in Tuesday's 6-5 win over the Reds. He's now delivered three straight quality starts and seven on the year. Cobb threw 73 of 113 pitches for strikes, one start after tossing a season-high 116 pitches, but with two off days coming up for the Rays over the next week the right-hander will get some extra rest before he takes the mound again Tuesday on the road against the Pirates.
Jun 15 2017Cobb allowed three runs -- just two earned -- on eight hits and two walks while striking out three batters during Thursday's loss to Detroit. He didn't factor into the decision. While limiting Detroit to two earned runs stands out, Cobb's underwhelming strikeout totals continue to limit his fantasy upside. In fact, with a 5-5 record, 4.17 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 6.3 K/9, the 29-year-old righty is barely moving the fantasy needle in any category. It isn't out of the question to just utilize Cobb against favorable opponents going forward. He projects to face the Reds at home in his next start.
Jun 12 2017Cobb will make his next start Thursday against the Tigers, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Cobb was originally scheduled to start Wednesday's contest against the Blue Jays, but he'll have his start pushed back a day in order to accommodate the arrival of Jacob Faria, who was recalled from Triple-A to fill in for Matt Andriese (hip) in the rotation. The 29-year-old, who currently owns a 4.29 ERA across 79.2 innings, will now matchup against Jordan Zimmerman in the series opener.
Jun 10 2017Cobb (5-5) allowed one run on four hits and a walk over six innings while striking out five in Friday's 13-4 win over the A's.The Rays scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back, giving Cobb plenty of cushion and letting him pound the strike zone all night. He threw 65 of 96 pitches for strikes en route to just his fourth quality start of the year, bouncing back nicely from a disaster against the Mariners in his last outing. Cobb will next take the mound Wednesday on the road against the Blue Jays.
Jun 4 2017Cobb (4-5) gave up nine earned runs on 14 hits and two walks over five innings in Saturday's 9-2 loss to the Mariners. He struck out three. The right-hander endured what was his worst start of the season against a Seattle offense that seems to finally be snapping out of a prolonged funk. Cobb got into trouble early by giving up three runs in the second after being staked to a 1-0 lead, and he continued to pitch to heavy contact the rest of the way. A pair of home runs surrendered to Nelson Cruz and Mike Zunino put a cap on his forgettable outing, one that included season highs in hits and runs surrendered. The 29-year-old will look to bounce back in a Thursday home start versus the White Sox.
May 28 2017Cobb allowed one run on six hits while walking three and striking out six over five innings for a no-decision in Sunday's 8-6 win over the Twins in 15 frames. It was nice to see from Cobb after he had allowed at least three runs in each of his last three outings. The 102-pitch effort lowered the right-hander's ERA to 3.67 on the year. His 6.4 K/9 isn't all that impressive, but his 12.3 percent HR/FB has hurt his overall numbers, and his 48.4 percent groundball rate should serve him well in the long run. Cobb should be started against the struggling Mariners in his next outing.
May 23 2017Cobb (4-4) allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks across 7.1 innings in Tuesday's loss to the Angels. He struck out five.Cobb gave up a pair of solo home runs on the first inning, but he cruised through six more frames before allowing another two runs with one out in the eighth. He struggled to throw strikes at times and tied a season high in free passes, one of which came around to score. While the late decline hurt Cobb's bottom line, this was the first time he had allowed more than three runs in over a month and ended a streak of three consecutive quality starts. He still owns a respectable 3.82 ERA and will look to get back on track Sunday against the Twins.
May 17 2017Cobb (4-3) allowed three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out seven batters over seven innings during Wednesday's win over Cleveland.Cobb has now allowed three runs or fewer in each of his past five starts and improved to a 3.67 ERA and 1.24 WHIP for the campaign. Additionally, Wednesday's seven punchouts were his highest mark during that five-game stretch. He's currently sporting a career-low 6.1 K/9, so there is potential that he begins to strikeout more batters going forward. Cobb will look to continue his strong work on the mound against the Angels next week at Tropicana Field.
May 12 2017Cobb (3-3) allowed four runs (none earned) on four hits and three walks over 6.1 innings in a win over Boston on Friday. He struck out five.Cobb was cruising in this contest until a couple of defensive miscues in the seventh inning led to his exit. After not having a single quality start in his first five outings, Cobb has now thrown three straight and has lowered his ERA to a very respectable 3.10. The 29-year-old righty will take the mound again on Wednesday at Cleveland.
May 7 2017Cobb (2-3) tossed eight innings of one-run ball in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Blue Jays, giving up four hits and two walks with three strikeouts.Cobb turned in arguably his best start of the season in this one, but a run-scoring single in the sixth and a solo homer in the seventh doomed him to a loss, as his club couldn't muster any offense of its own. His strikeout stuff wasn't exactly working Sunday, but the right-hander pitched to contact effectively and induced 11 groundouts in addition to numerous weak flyballs. Cobb has now allowed just four earned runs over his last 19 innings to lower his ERA to a respectable 3.56, and he will look to bounce back from this tough-luck loss Friday against the Red Sox.
May 14 2015Cobb (elbow) underwent successful Tommy John surgery Wednesday, Steve Carney of 620 WDAE AM reports.Cobb was transferred to the 60-day DL following the news that he required Tommy John, and now he will begin the rehab process. However, he will miss the remainder of the 2015 season because of the injury and it will also cut into his 2016 campaign.
May 8 2015Cobb (elbow) said Friday that he will undergo Tommy John surgery, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune reports.Cobb was diagnosed with a partial ligament tear in his elbow earlier in the week, and while he said initially that he would try to pitch through it, he understandably changed course when he found out Friday it's actually a full tear. The right-hander first came down with forearm tightness in mid-March, and there was renewed discomfort upon his recent return to elevated ground. He now faces what is typically a 12-16 month recovery.
May 8 2015The Rays transferred Cobb (elbow) to the 60-day disabled list Friday. It was announced earlier Friday that Cobb would undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery, so his placement on the 60-day DL was a procedural move to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for Andrew Bellatti. Cobb will face a lengthy recovery period as he works his way back from his elbow injury.
May 7 2015Cobb (elbow) got a platelet-rich plasma injection in his elbow Monday, and he'll be shut down from all baseball activities until at least next week, Steve Carney of 620 WDAE reports.Cobb hopes to start playing catch in two weeks, which essentially rules him out for the rest of May, shortly after he was diagnosed with a partially-torn UCL. He said that Tommy John surgery is the last option, but he also acknowledged that it would be best to make a final decision within the next month, as he'd likely miss all of 2016 if he waited until July or August to have the procedure. Many pitchers have been down this road before, and it usually leads to Tommy John surgery. On a more positive note, Cobb believes he suffered the injury back in March, and yet he reported throwing bullpen sessions without any pain as recently as late April.
May 5 2015Cobb has a partial ligament tear in his elbow and will try to pitch through it, the Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin reports. This is incredibly troubling, as Tommy John surgery could be the best option at some point down the line. It's not clear if Cobb will return to the rotation at some point in the near future and try to pitch through the issue at the big league level, a la Masahiro Tanaka, and the uncertainty surrounding the situation just adds to the frustration fantasy owners must be dealing with. Cobb has often missed time in past seasons, but this would be his first serious elbow issue of his professional career. Alex Colome and Nate Karns could remain in the rotation for a good chunk of the season.
May 5 2015Cobb (forearm) may have a torn elbow ligament, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The report says this is "informed speculation", so we'll be on the lookout for something more solid. It's still a troubling development for Cobb's owners, as the right-hander was shut down from throwing Monday, and he may now be in danger of needing Tommy John surgery.
May 4 2015Cobb (forearm) suffered a setback and will be shut down from throwing, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Cobb had been progressing well from tendinitis in his forearm up until recently, but manager Kevin Cash indicated the pitcher hadn't felt as good as he had hoped. He'll visit with a team doctor, which will likely result in a new timetable and rehab schedule, but at this point the targeted return by mid-May seems unlikely.
Apr 24 2015Cobb (forearm) indicated his bullpen session went well, and believes he may be scheduled to throw another one Monday, Roger Mooney of The Tampa Tribune reports.Cobb remains a ways from his debut, but took a big step Friday with a bullpen session. Assuming no setbacks occur in his rehab, a mid-May return appears plausible.
Apr 22 2015The Rays are targeting a mid-May return for Cobb, the Tampa Bay Times reports. He's hoping to throw a bullpen session by the end of the week. Once that happens, Cobb will begin progressing toward a rehab assignment. Given the duration of his absence, it would hardly be surprising to see him take the ball for three starts with the Rays' minor league affiliates before he's ready for activation.
Apr 22 2015Cobb (forearm) played catch Wednesday without reporting any pain and will throw his first bullpen session Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Cobb has been progressing well, as he's now been able to throw on consecutive days. He could progress to live batting practice if he makes it through a few bullpens without incident, and appears on track for the targeted mid-May return to the big league club.
Apr 21 2015Cobb (forearm) hopes to throw a bullpen session by the end of the week, Roger Mooney of The Tampa Tribune reports.Cobb has thus far been limited to playing catch, and while the Rays still haven't provided a timetable for his return, a bullpen session would be a step in the right direction. Given that he'll probably require multiple rehab starts, Cobb is unlikely to join the Tampa Bay rotation before early-to-mid May.
Apr 13 2015Cobb (forearm) remains limited to playing catch and there is currently no timetable for his return, the Tampa Bay Times reports.Considering that he'll need a few rehab starts before he's ready to return from the disabled list, Cobb's return appears to be several weeks away in the best-case scenario. As a result, it would be surprising to see him on the mound for the Rays before May.
Apr 8 2015Cobb (forearm) played catch for the second straight day Wednesday, which is the first time he has thrown in back-to-back sessions since the injury, the Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin reports. He said the session went well, but he will still need to get some work in at the minor league level or in extended spring before we talk about him rejoining the Rays' rotation.
Apr 5 2015Cobb (forearm) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Cobb is eligible to return at any point, but he isn't expected to be ready until late April. He still needs to get in some work at extended spring training, and will likely head out on a rehab assignment.
Mar 30 2015Cobb (forearm) played catch Monday and the session went well, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. All signs continue to point toward a late-April return for Cobb, although it will be easier to determine if that timetable is realistic as he begins to stretch out in game situations again.
Mar 28 2015Cobb (forearm) was cleared to throw Saturday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. After Cobb indicated a couple days ago that the pain in his forearm had disappeared, Rays doctors evidently agreed with the right-hander's self-assessment. He'll kick off his throwing program by tossing the ball from 60-to-75 feet with the team's athletic trainer, and should steadily increase the distance in the days to come. Cobb remains in line to miss the start of the season, but Saturday's news qualifies as a positive development in his recovery process.
Mar 28 2015Cobb (forearm) threw 30 tosses Saturday and expects to be back before the end of April, MLB.com's Bill Chastain reports.Since this is the player's hopes, it should not be taken as a strict timetable, but rather a best-case scenario. Be prepared to miss about a month of production when taking Cobb in drafts.
Mar 25 2015Cobb (forearm) has said that the pain he has been experiencing is "pretty much gone", Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports."I can't even make it hurt," Cobb went on to say. This is obviously a welcome development for the Rays, as the team's No. 1 starter now expects to begin throwing at some point later this week. Barring any further setbacks, Cobb could likely take the mound for the Rays by late-April.
Mar 23 2015Cobb (forearm) said that he is nearly pain free. He's scheduled to have a follow-up visit with his doctor Tuesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Depending on how the check-up goes Tuesday, Cobb could seemingly progress toward a throwing program in the near future and make the possibility of an April return a realistic one.
Mar 18 2015The Rays confirmed that Cobb has tendinitis in his forearm and will not make the Opening Day start, the St. Petersburg Times reports.Chris Archer is now the likely Opening Day starter for the Rays. Even though Cobb was downplaying the injury Tuesday, the Rays are taking the cautious route.
Mar 17 2015Cobb left Tuesday's start with forearm tightness, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Forearm tightness is never the initial diagnosis you want to hear, due to the connection with Tommy John surgery. Of course, that doesn't mean anything should be assumed, as it's quite possible this is just a minor injury. Speaking after his outing, Cobb said he does not believe the injury is serious, adding that he actually felt a bit of tightness before he even took the mound, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Cobb still managed to pitch three innings, and he doesn't seem too worried about the injury.
Mar 4 2015Cobb has been named the Rays' Opening Day starter by Manager Kevin Cash, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune reports.Manager Kevin Cash got an early start on setting his regular-season rotation by naming Cobb the guy for Opening Day on April 6th versus the Orioles. The plan is for Cobb to be followed by Chris Archer, Drew Smyly and Jake Odorizzi.
Jan 16 2015Cobb agreed to a one-year, $4 million contract with the Rays on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Mark Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. An oblique injury cost Cobb more than a month early in the year, and he struggled to find his rhythm immediately upon his return (5.35 ERA in June), but the right-hander caught fire in the second half. In 14 starts after the All-Star break (spanning 90.1 innings), Cobb posted a 1.79 ERA, .218 BAA and 81:23 K:BB, solidifying his spot atop the Rays' rotation heading into 2015.
Sep 23 2014Cobb gave up one run on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts in seven innings Tuesday against the Red Sox.Cobb hasn't given up more than three earned runs in a start since June 23, and if he could just make it through a season without missing significant time due to an injury, he would be a no-doubt top-20 starting pitcher in fantasy. On Tuesday he eclipsed the 160-inning mark at the big-league level for the first time in his career, and he'll have a chance to tack on to that total in the final game of the season Sunday in Cleveland.
Sep 18 2014Cobb tossed six innings in Wednesday's loss to the Yankees, allowing three earned runs on four hits and three walks while recording three strikeouts.Ending a streak of 12 consecutive starts in which he allowed two earned runs or less, Cobb was not quite at top form Wednesday evening, which ultimately resulted in his eighth loss of the season. The Rays' right-hander has been one of the AL's top pitchers of the second half, posting an outstanding 1.51 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 8.5 K/9 across 77.1 innings. Cobb will likely be back on the mound either next Wednesday in Boston.
Sep 11 2014Cobb took a no-decision against the Yankees on Thursday, but was fantastic, allowing just one hit and one run in 7.1 innings. He issued a couple of walks and struck out four.Cobb had a no-hitter through the first seven innings, but was pulled after giving up a one-out double to Chris Young, who eventually scored off of reliever Brad Boxberger. He was still in line for the win, but closer Jake McGee surrendered three runs in the bottom of the ninth. The underrated Cobb has been superb in his last 13 starts, not allowing more than two runs in any of those outings, while going 5-1 during that stretch. He's scheduled for just one appearance next week, but start him with confidence, as he'll take on the Yankees again at home.
Sep 5 2014Cobb turned in seven scoreless frames against the Orioles on Friday night, allowing six hits and a walk while picking up a half-dozen strikeouts. After a brilliant August that saw him post a 1.49 ERA and 8.9 K/9 across 36.1 innings, Cobb kicked off September in similar fashion. The Rays' right-hander has undoubtedly placed himself atop the rotation so far in the post-David Price era and will look to keep things rolling on the mound Thursday at Yankee Stadium.
Aug 31 2014Cobb worked a strong 6.1 innings Sunday afternoon, giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits and a walk while striking out six in a tough-luck loss to the Red Sox.One of the AL's best pitchers so far in the second half of 2014, Cobb has now allowed two runs or less in each of his nine starts since the All-Star break. Over this outstanding stretch, the Rays' right-hander has posted a 1.42 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 9.5 K/9 across 57 innings. Cobb is scheduled to be back on the bump Friday against the Orioles.
Aug 26 2014Cobb went four innings Tuesday, giving up two earned runs on three hits while walking three and fanning six in a no-decision against the Orioles.Neither starter fared particularly well in this one, as Wei-Yun Chen for the O's departed after just 4.2 innings. Despite the no-decision, Cobb still hasn't lost since June 23 -- a span of 11 starts -- all while posting solid numbers across the board this season (3.06 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 38:122 BB:K in 126.2 innings).
Aug 21 2014Cobb (9-6) tossed seven shutout innings against the Tigers on Thursday, striking out six while allowing just two hits and two walks to come away with a 1-0 victory. The unreliable and injured Cobb from early in the season has recently been replaced by a dynamo who's been mowing down batters throughout July and August. He's tossed consecutive scoreless outings and has given up a grand total of just four runs in his last six starts combined, shaving his ERA from 4.08 to 3.19 in that span. He'll draw the first-place Orioles next week -- they're the last team to score more than two runs against him in a start, way back on June 29.
Aug 15 2014Cobb was brilliant Friday night versus the Yankees, striking out eight while allowing just six hits and one walk across 7.1 scoreless frames.Having now gone nine consecutive starts without a loss, Cobb appears to be stepping into the top spot of the Rays' rotation. Dating back to June 29, the 26-year-old hurler is 6-0 with a 2.24 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 9.1 K/9 over 56.1 innings. Cobb will return to the mound Thursday versus the Tigers.

Aug 5 2014Cobb (7-6) gave up two runs on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts over 5.2 innings Monday against the Athletics.Cobb allowed 11 base runners, but found a way to avoid major damage and left the game in a 2-2 tie. The rays would eventually lose in extra innings. The right-hander has given up three runs or fewer in seven consecutive starts dating back June 29. Cobb sports a 3.52 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 96 strikeouts in 102.1 innings on the season. He will take the hill Sunday on the road versus the Cubs.
Jul 29 2014Cobb tossed a gem against the Brewers on Tuesday, pitching eight innings and allowing just one run on three hits and two walks while striking out 12 batters to pick up his seventh win (7-6) of the year.Cobb has won three games in a row, while allowing just three runs in his last 20.2 innings pitched. As we head into August, Cobb is settling into quite a groove and has now lowered his ERA from 4.39 to 3.54 in his last 10 starts. Cobb is next scheduled to take the mound Monday in Oakland.
Jul 23 2014Cobb (6-6) hurled seven shutout innings against the Cardinals in a 3-0 win Wednesday. He scattered five hits and struck out 10.If tossing his best outing of the season wasn't enough, the 26-year-old notched his first career hit in the second inning. It was the first hit by a Cobb in the major leagues since Ty Cobb's (no relation) final knock on September 3, 1928. The right-hander will face the Brewers on Tuesday.
Jul 18 2014Cobb put together a solid 5.2 innings against the Twins on Friday night, allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out a couple en route to his fifth win of the season.Though Cobb has not been working extremely deep into games as of late, he has registered three victories out of his last four starts. Over that stretch, the Rays' right-hander has gone 3-0 while posting a 4.03 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 17-to-6 K/BB ratio across 22.1 innings. Cobb is currently slated to be back atop the mound Wednesday in St. Louis.
Jul 9 2014Cobb allowed six hits, two earned runs and two walks with seven strikeouts over 6.2 innings in a no-decision Wednesday against the Royals.Cobb had been in line for the win, right up until Salvador Perez hit the go-ahead home run for the Royals off Kirby Yates in the ninth inning. Although the late-game events robbed Cobb of his third consecutive victory, the 26-year-old brought his ERA down to 4.14 on the season, to go along with a 1.25 WHIP and 68:24 K:BB ratio over 76 innings. He won't make his next scheduled start until after the All-Star break.
Jul 4 2014Cobb worked five-plus innings Friday night versus the Tigers, allowing three earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five en route to his fourth win of the season.Following five very solid frames, Cobb was lifted in the top of the sixth Friday night after the first four batters of the inning each reached base. Despite back-to-back wins, the Rays' right-hander has been nothing more than mediocre through his last three outings. Over that stretch, Cobb has posted a 7.20 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 6.0 K/9 across 15 innings.
Jun 29 2014Cobb worked five innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out three in Sunday's 12-7 victory over the Orioles.Well on the way to picking up his third victory of the season, Cobb exited Sunday's effort after the fifth inning with a seven-run lead in tact thanks to the Rays' offense breaking out for their second highest run total to this point in the 2014 campaign. Though the 26-year-old hurler was certainly not great, he put up a much better effort than the six-run pounding he suffered at the hands of the Pirates last time out. Cobb will be in search of further improvement when he next takes the mound Friday in Detroit.
Jun 18 2014Cobb gave up an unearned run on four hits over seven innings while striking out six and walking four in a losing effort Wednesday against the Orioles. While Cobb took the loss, he pitched well other than the four free passes. Cobb threw 70 of his 111 pitches for strikes, piling up 14 swinging-strikes along the way and recording 10 of his 15 contact outs on the ground. Cobb is scheduled to make his next start Monday against the Pirates at home.
Jun 13 2014Cobb was outstanding in a 6-1 victory over the Astros Friday night, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out 11 across 6.1 innings.Surrendering 16 earned runs over his previous 15.1 innings, Cobb was in desperate need of a bounce-back performance and that is exactly what he pulled off Friday night. The 26-year-old hurler needed just 97 pitches to get through 6.1 innings and rack up 11 punchouts, as he baffled the Astros' young hitters throughout the evening. Now back on track, Cobb will look to keep it going Wednesday afternoon against a tough Orioles offense.
Jun 7 2014Cobb allowed seven runs on 10 hits in just 4.1 innings of work against the Mariners on Saturday to fall to take the loss.Cobb threw a lot of strikes in this one, but the Mariners feasted on both his fastball and changeup. That is three straight clunkers for Cobb, despite a 14:4 K:BB over his last 15.1 innings of work.
Jun 2 2014Cobb took the loss Monday, working six innings of three-run ball against the Marlins. The quality start was a welcome sight after the righty was blasted for six runs in his previous start. Cobb has made just six starts this season due to injury, but is the owner of a solid 3.19 ERA and 1.06 WHIP. He'll face the Mariners in his next start.
May 27 2014Cobb was roughed up to the tune of nine hits and six earned runs across five innings in Tuesday's loss to the Jays.Back-to-back jacks in the fifth by Adam Lind and Edwin Encarnacion effectively closed the book on Cobb's night, as he suffered his first loss of the year to the scorching hot Jays. A couple of bright spots were his seven punchouts -- a season high -- as well as his 18-of-25 first-pitch strikes. However, the nine hits allowed were just too many against one of the majors' most prolific offenses. He had been off to an excellent start prior to hitting the DL, owning a 1.89 ERA and 0.89 WHIP over his first three outings of the season. The 26-year-old hurler holds a 12-4 record with an outstanding 2.66 ERA over his last 25 starts dating back to the beginning of 2013, so his presence is obviously missed by a staff that has allowed 40 runs over the past six games.

One candidate may be Erik Bedard, who was going to replace Cesar Ramos in the team's long relief role.
Apr 13 2014An MRI revealed Cobb is dealing with an oblique strain, which typically carries a 6-to-8 week timetable for recovery, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. This diagnosis would be a big blow for the Rays, as Cobb hasn't been scored upon in his last two starts. The early indications from the team are that it won't sideline him for a significant stretch. Nevertheless, his progress as he works back will ultimately determine if the absence is a short one.
Apr 7 2014Cobb threw seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out six Sunday afternoon versus the Rangers.Certainly not at top form in his 2014 debut this past Tuesday, Cobb bounced back in a big way on Sunday. Apr 1 2014Cobb gave up four earned runs on five hits and four walks with three strikeouts in five innings Tuesday against the Blue Jays.Cobb admitted after the game that his fastball command was "non-existent," which explains why Cobb was unable to get his curveball and changeup to play up to the levels he's known for, and led to him throwing 104 pitches in just five innings. He'll try to bounce back in his next start Sunday at home against the a loaded Rangers lineup.

He took a no-decision in the loss to the Red Sox.Cobb has struggled with his command since returning from the disabled list on June 5, walking three or more batters in seven of nine starts. He gets another tough assignment in his next start against Texas on Monday.
Sep 7 2013Cobb gave up four runs on seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts over six innings against the Mariners on Friday.Cobb wasn't exactly at his best in this one, although it marked the first time in eight starts that he didn't issue multiple walks. Sep 1 2013Cobb gave up just two runs on five hits and four walks with seven strikeouts over eight innings but was saddled with the loss after the A's beat the Rays 2-1 on Saturday.Though the command seemed off at times, as evidenced by the four walks, Cobb pitched a beautiful game, victimized only by Coco Crisp whose RBI-single in the sixth and solo home run in the eighth. Jun 18 2013Cobb (head) does not have a timetable for his potential return to the Rays' rotation, the Tampa Bay Times reports.Manager Joe Maddon recently chatted with Cobb, but he was noncommittal regarding whether the pitcher would be able to play again this season. The news is worrisome, but considering the murky nature of concussions, every safeguard will be taken to ensure he's past his symptoms before taking the mound. Consider him out indefinitely.
Jun 16 2013Cobb (head) will be placed on the 7-day concussion DL on Sunday, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune reports. While it was widely assumed after Saturday's incident, Cobb will now definitely miss at least one start while on the 7-day DL. Fortunately, Cobb remained conscious the entire time, and he reportedly checked out normally at the hospital. He has been great for the Rays and was facing a tough Red Sox lineup Monday, so don't read too much into this poor outing.
Jun 5 2013Cobb (finger) looked fantastic Wednesday against Detroit, as he gave up just five hits over 7.2 scoreless innings. He struck out seven and walked three. After being scratched from his last start due to an issue with a finger nail on his pitching hand, was dominant against Detroit. In two career nods against the Tigers, he is 0-1 with a 4.09 ERA, 1.82 WHIP, and 10:4 K:BB ratio in 11 innings.
Jun 2 2013Cobb (finger) is scheduled to start Wednesday against the Tigers, Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The right-hander was aiming to return Tuesday, but the Rays will go with Matt Moore, who had his last start shortened because of rain, in the series opener in Detroit. Cobb will then go Wednesday, six days after being scratched from his scheduled start with a finger nail issue.
May 30 2013Cobb (finger) said he expects to return to the rotation Tuesday against the Tigers, the Tampa Bay Times reports.Cobb, who was scratched from Friday's start with his fingernail bothering him, is only expected to require a few days off before he feels fully comfortable gripping his pitches. With a 2.66 ERA and a 8.3 K/9 rate through 10 starts this season, Cobb is quickly developing into a must-start every week, even against a formidable opposing lineup like the Tigers.

He then allowed a single before notching a strikeout and leaving the game with 113 pitches on the tally. The game marked his second of the season lasting at least eight frames, also versus the Yankees on April 24, when he shut them out across 8.1 innings. Cobb will next take the hill Friday in Cleveland, where he gave up three runs with a 4:2 K:BB ratio in six innings during his sole career nod.
May 22 2013Cobb will have his next start moved up a day to Sunday, the Tampa Bay Times reports. The Rays have a scheduled off day Thursday, so the move with allow Cobb to remain on four days' rest after he pitched Tuesday night. May 21 2013Cobb gave up one earned run on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 6.1 innings Tuesday, picking up the win against the Blue Jays.Thirteen of his 19 outs were on the ground, which suits Cobb's style. He has been one of the better draft day values among pitchers to this point in the season, and his xFIP and ERA were almost identical heading into Tuesday's start, so there's a chance he keeps this up. Of course, one of the reasons he's been pitching so well is that his 8.83 K/9 rate is well up from the 7.00 K/9 he posted in 136.1 innings in 2012, so he'll probably have to keep fanning hitters at this new rate for his ERA and WHIP to remain excellent.
May 16 2013Cobb struck out six and allowed just one run over 6.1 innings against the Red Sox on Thursday, but received no decision thanks to a blown save by Fernando Rodney.Tough luck for Cobb to lose the win, but he continues to impress nearly every time out for the Rays, averaging nearly a strikeout per inning while limiting the walks. As importantly, after giving up six homers in his last three starts, he kept the ball in the yard against Boston.
May 10 2013Cobb posted an improbable line Friday, allowing three runs on five hits while walking two and striking out an amazing 13 over just 4.2 innings of a 6-3 Rays win against the Padres on Friday night. It's not often that a starting pitcher logs 13 strikeouts, and doesn't even last long enough to qualify for a win, but that was Cobb's fate Friday night. He tossed 117 pitches (77 for strikes) to make his departure so early a necessity, but he has certainly made a splash in the Rays rotation. He'll carry a 3.09 ERA into his next start at home against the Red Sox.
May 5 2013Cobb improved to 4-2 on Sunday against Colorado, giving up three earned runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings pitched. He walked just one and struck out nine.Cobb gave up three home runs, all solo shots, en route to picking up his fourth victory of the year. He's allowed 42 hits in 42 innings pitched, and seemingly continues to dodge giving up the big inning. His ERA sits at a 2.79 however, and he continues to give Tampa Bay a good chance to win when he's out there. He'll look to do exactly that when he takes on the Padres in his next start.
May 1 2013Cobb gave up four runs on 10 hits with no walks and five strikeouts against the Royals on Tuesday. The pitching line doesn't quite paint the most accurate story as Cobb was brilliant through the first five frames, allowing just four hits in total, only to fall apart in the sixth. With two outs in his final inning, things just got away from him and he couldn't recover. He gave up a few hits that gave the Royals a bit of a rally and then served up a two-run shot to a struggling Mike Moustakas. It's just a minor hiccup in a sea of what has been a phenomenal start to the season and you can expect him to rebound his next time out when he takes on the Rockies in interleague play. While a start in Colorado is never something you like for a young pitcher, the fact that he induces such a high percentage of ground balls helps to negate the hitter-friendly dimensions of Coors Field.
Apr 24 2013Cobb (3-1) tossed a gem Wednesday, tossing 8.1 shutout innings while striking out seven against the Yankees.Cobb relied on pin-point fastball control against the Yankees, throwing first-pitch strikes to 18 of the 28 batters he faced. He is now sporting a 1.82 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP through four starts this season. He will look to keep his strong start going against the Royals next Tuesday.
Apr 19 2013Cobb improved to 2-1 on the season, allowing three runs on 10 hits while walking one and striking out three over 7.1 innings of an 8-3 A's win over Tampa Bay Friday night. It was something of a bend but don't break outing for Cobb who has pitched well early on this season. He allowed 10 nits, but generally kept the Rays off the scoreboard after a shaky first inning and his teammates provided plenty of offense to back his pitching. He'll carry a solid 2.53 ERA into his next start at home against the Yankees.
Apr 15 2013Cobb allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out six over 6.2 innings in his first loss of the season on Sunday against the Red Sox.Cobb struggled a little with control partially due to dry air in Boston that made it difficult to grip the ball as he desired. A few botched plays in the infield could have helped reduce the damage but would not have helped him as the Rays did not record a hit until the eighth inning in the shutout. Cobb has been solid so far this season and his next start is scheduled for Friday against the A's at Tropicana Field.
Apr 12 2013Cobb will now start Sunday following Friday's postponement, the Boston Globe reports. Both the Rays and Red Sox will send top starters David Price and Jon Lester to the mound Saturday, with Cobb facing off against Clay Buchholz on Sunday. Cobb was excellent in his first start of the season, turning in 7.1 shutout innings against the Indians while striking out six batters.
Apr 6 2013Cobb tossed 7.1 scoreless innings and was the winning pitcher Saturday against the Indians. He gave up four hits while walking three and striking out six. A fantastic season debut for Cobb who had complete control over the Indians outside of his three walks. His next start will be April 12 when the Rays visit the Red Sox.
Mar 13 2013Cobb fired five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and recording six strikeouts in Tuesday's exhibition against the Yankees.Cobb reportedly looked very sharp and in midseason form. The injury-depleted Yankees did not start very many regulars, but it does not take away from the fact that Cobb was very efficient and in control. He has his spot set in the rotation and is looking for a step forward this season for the Rays.
Mar 3 2013Cobb bounced back in his second start of the spring on Saturday, pitching three shutout innings allowing one hit and striking out five hitters. After a rocky first spring start, Cobb smoothed it back out against the Orioles on Saturday. He threw only 36 pitches in the outing with 28 of those going for strikes. He offers a solid late-round pick in deep leagues as he offers nice potential to reach double-digit wins in the back of the Rays' rotation.
Feb 26 2013Cobb was "too amped up" in his first start of spring training on Monday when he allowed two runs in two innings, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.Cobb threw 38 pitches over the two innings and gave up a long home run to Dustin Pedroia in the start as well. He and manager Joe Maddon were not concerned as his pitches were fine on the whole over the start. It is early in spring training and Cobb is locked in to the back of the starting rotation barring injury or very poor performance in the spring.
Feb 12 2013Manager Joe Maddon said that Cobb is "pretty much esconced" in the Rays' rotation, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. There was not a lot of doubt heading into the offseason that Cobb would not end up in the rotation, but this almost ensures it. Cobb had a solid 2012 season going 11-9 with a 4.09 ERA that included a very strong finish of 7-1 with a 3.09 ERA. He should line up in the fourth spot of the rotation for 2013.
Oct 1 2012Cobb ended his season on a high note Monday night, firing seven innings of one-run ball against the Orioles.Cobb allowed only two hits, one of which was a home run by Matt Wieters, and walked two. He struck out seven in the game. Cobb's regular season ends with an 11-9 record, 4.03 ERA, and 1.25 WHIP in 23 starts.
Sep 26 2012Cobb (10-9) allowed one run over five innings Wednesday in a win over Boston. He struck out five and allowed three hits and three walks.Although consistency and pitching deep into games are still issues for Cobb, he's had a very respectable campaign for Tampa since getting the call back in May and makes for a fine keeper in deeper formats.
Sep 17 2012Cobb suffered a loss Monday against the Red Sox as he pitched six innings and allowed four runs (three earned), two hits and three walks to go along with four strikeouts.Cobb suffered his first loss since July 27th in a rare appearance where a starting pitcher allows more runs than hits. The two hits he allowed Monday actually tied his lowest total hits allowed in a single game this season.
Sep 12 2012Cobb gave up two earned runs in 4.2 innings in a 3-2 Rays' loss to the Orioles Wednesday.Cobb escaped serious damage against the Orioles but could not get out of the fifth inning. Cobb's next start is against the now weaker lineup of the Red Sox.
Sep 5 2012Manager Joe Maddon said Cobb will probably be limited to three more starts this season, the Tampa Tribune reports.Cobb was excellent in his latest turn Tuesday against the Yankees, giving up two runs on four hits in seven innings. He's been especially impressive since the All-Star break, but at just 24 years old, he's considered a vital cog in the team's rotation going forward, and they'll look to protect him. Chris Archer is considered the top candidate to replace him in the rotation later in September.
Sep 5 2012Cobb tossed seven innings while giving up two runs on four hits and striking out five Tuesday against the Yankees to improve to 9-8 on the the season.Cobb has an impressive 3.65 ERA in 10 starts since the All-Star break, and that includes an Aug. 18 outing where he gave up eight runs in Anaheim.
Aug 29 2012Cobb allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits in 4.2 innings Wednesday against the Rangers, striking out three and walking one.He didn't receive a decision in the eventual win. This is certainly not how Cobb wanted to build on the complete-game shutout he threw his last time out, but the Rangers are a tough offense; give him a mulligan.
Aug 23 2012Cobb tossed the first shutout of his career Thursday, scattering four hits with eight strikeouts.Cobb, who earned his eighth win of the season, needed 113 pitches with 79 going for strikes. It was a great bounce-back performance after Cobb surrendered eight runs in his last start. Other than that eight-run outing, Cobb has been real good as of late, winning his last four decisions while not allowing more than one run in any of those starts.
Aug 18 2012Cobb only lasted 2.2 innings against the Angels on Saturday, and he surrendered eight runs on 12 hits in the no-decision.Fellow starter C.J. Wilson also had a rough night, which spared Cobb the loss. Cobb threw a high proportion of his pitches for strikes (69 percent), but they were too hittable to be effective. Jeff Niemann is on the mend in the minors, but it is unclear if Cobb's job is in jeopardy.... yet.
Aug 8 2012Cobb struck out seven batters and only allowed one run on five hits (no walks) over seven innings Wednesday against Toronto to pick up his sixth win of the year. This was Cobb's third quality start in a row after netting only one in his previous five outings. He's now 6-8 on the season with a 4.32 ERA.
Aug 1 2012Cobb (5-8) allowed just one run -- a solo homer by Brandon Inge -- on four hits over seven terrific innings in Wednesday's win over Oakland. He struck out six and walked one.Cobb's had an uneven year, but has shown flashes of brilliance at times. He's turned in two good outings in a row now, but is a risky start his next time out against the high-powered Blue Jays offense.
Jul 27 2012Cobb was the hard-luck loser on Friday after giving up just three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts against the Angels.Considering the amount of firepower the Angels have, Cobb pitched a fantastic game here. It was the top of the order, particularly Albert Pujols, who got to him, but he kept the ball in the yard, threw 93 pitches in total (65 for strikes) and induced 11 ground ball outs. If he pitches even close to this well in his next start in Oakland, he'll definitely be worth using.
Jul 22 2012Cobb (shin) said he should be able to make his next start, Joe Smith of the Tampa Times reports.X-rays on Cobb's leg came back negative, and Cobb noted that the ball that struck him hit "all muscle." The Rays have an off day Monday, so Cobb will get an extra day of rest. It's still no sure thing, but consider Cobb probable to start Friday against the Angels.
Jul 21 2012X-rays on Cobb's shin came back negative, and the Rays are calling his injury a bruise, Mark Topkin of the Tampa Times reports. He will likely avoid a DL stint, but it is not clear if he will need to skip a start.
Jul 21 2012Cobb had to be helped off the field by team trainers Saturday after he took a grounder off of his right shin, Joe Smith of the Tampa Times reports. The extent of his injury is still TBD, so he should be considered questionable for his next start. He allowed a pair of runs on three hits and two walks in the two innings prior to his departure.
Jul 6 2012Cobb allowed three runs on six hits, walking two and striking out four over six innings of a 10-3 win over Cleveland on Friday night.A quality performance, and one that should help his standing going forward. Cobb ends the first half with a 4-5 record and a 4.89 ERA. Expect him to continue in a spot starter role, filling in when needed in the rotation.
Jul 2 2012Cobb lasted just 5.1 innings Sunday as he gave up five runs (four earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out three in the Ray's loss to the Tigers.Sunday's start marked Cobb's shortest in his last five appearances, which in truth have been all over the map. Through nearly the same number of innings as 2011, he has yielded seven fewer walks in 2012 with a slightly higher batting average against, but the result has been an ERA that's a full 1.52 runs higher this season. Cobb will hope for better luck in his scheduled start Friday at Cleveland.
Jun 25 2012Cobb gave up eight runs on 13 hits over eight innings in a loss to the Royals on Monday night.Unfortunately for those looking to Cobb in a favorable matchup against the Royals, he struggled and was forced to take one for the team as the Rays had a very limited bullpen available Monday night. On a positive note, Cobb did not issue a walk during the outing against the Royals, but unfortunately things won't get any easier for him next time out against the Tigers on Sunday.
Jun 24 2012Cobb will make his next start Monday against Kansas City, Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin reports.Manager Joe Maddon won't reveal the starter for the Rays' second game of Sunday's doubleheader until after game one, but he has made it clear that it won't be Cobb.
Jun 17 2012Cobb racked up a career-high 10 strikeouts in seven shutout innings Sunday, yielding only two hits and one walk as the Rays stung the Marlins.Cobb earned his third win in six starts in 2012, though it was his first victory in his last four appearances. He has very nice peripherals -- a 1.168 WHIP and 32:12 K:BB ratio in 37.2 frames -- which should help to lower his 3.82 ERA as the season continues. Cobb will get another opportunity to do so Saturday at Philadelphia.
Jun 12 2012Cobb earned his third loss of the season after allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits and three walks over 6.2 innings in Tuesday's 11-2 loss to the Mets.Cobb struck out six Mets on Tuesday, so the stuff was there at times, but he labored, throwing 109 pitches until he was pulled in the seventh inning. His record now falls to 2-3 on the year.
Jun 6 2012Cobb picked up his second loss of the season Wednesday against the Yankees, allowing four runs through seven innings.Cobb actually pitched pretty well, only yielding six baserunners on the night (five hits and a walk), though two of the hits were homers. After starting 2-0 with the Rays, the 24-year-old has now picked up back-to-back losses. He'll try to get back on track his next time out against the Mets.
May 30 2012Cobb was checked out by trainers before the fifth inning of Wednesday's game, but made it through the inning before coming out of the game, the Tampa Bay Times' Joe Smith reports.Cobb came out after only 91 pitches, but his poor performance probably played more of a role than any possible injury. He gave up back-to-back doubles in the fifth, and ended the day allowing four runs on nine hits and a walk over five innings. For now, there is no reason to think that Cobb will miss his next start, but more information should be available once the game ends.
May 25 2012Cobb allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits, walking four and striking out two over five innings of a 7-4 Rays' win over Boston on Friday night. He is now 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA after taking over the rotation spot of the injured Jeff Niemann. He could have some value in deeper leagues, but needs to throw more strikes if he is going to get deeper into games (he needed 96 pitches, only 51 of which were strikes, to get through five innings Friday night).
May 19 2012Cobb held the Braves to two runs on six hits over seven innings Saturday to pick up the win in his season debut. He struggled a bit in the first few innings, but he settled down to retire the final 10 Braves he faced. Cobb struck out 44 in 41.1 innings at Triple-A Durham prior to the recall, so he could have some success in Jeff Niemann's place.
May 18 2012Cobb will start for the Rays on Saturday against the Braves, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Chris Archer was another candidate for the assignment, but Cobb will get the first crack at the job, with Jeff Niemann out indefinitely with a fractured right fibula.
May 15 2012Cobb did not earn a decision on Monday night against Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He threw five shutout innings while striking out eight and allowing three hits and three walks.Cobb has pitched much better in Triple-A than his 4.14 ERA suggests. He came into the game with a 2.90 FIP, and he could be the favorite to replace Jeff Niemann in the rotation. He is currently on the same scheduled day as the injured starter, and pitched well for Tampa Bay last season.
Apr 16 2012Cobb has been sent down in favor of Brandon Gomes, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The Rays will probably be shuffling the back end of their bullpen throughout the year, and Cobb is the latest casualty. Barring an injury he'll have to stay down for 10 days, but it wouldn't surprise if he makes it back to the majors at some point this year.
Apr 14 2012The Rays recalled Cobb after Saturday's game, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The Rays' bullpen has been worked quite a bit the past two games, so Cobb will provide them with an extra right-handed reliever. Cobb started for the Rays last season, and he had been starting for Triple-A Durham prior to the recall, but it does not look like that will be in the cards for this go-around.
Mar 13 2012Cobb has been sent down to minor league camp, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With David Price, James Shields, Matt Moore, Jeremy Hellickson, Wade Davis and Jeff Niemann already fighting for five rotation spots, Cobb will have to wait his turn in the minors. He will be one of the first callups if the Rays need a starter this season, however.
Aug 10 2011Cobb will have season-ending surgery to remove a blockage from the area near his first rib, Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He's expected to be fine for the start of 2012, and depending on the Rays' offseason rotation adjustments, Cobb figures to get another look as the team's No. 5 starter.
