Feb 9 2024Kluber announced his retirement from professional baseball Friday, Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The final five seasons of Kluber's career were filled with injuries and some lackluster production. However, the 37-year-old's six-year run from 2013-18 is unimpeachable, featuring a 2.96 ERA, 1,364 strikeouts over 1238.2 innings, three All-Star Game appearances and two American League Cy Young awards. Kluber finished with a career 3.44 ERA and 116 wins over 13 major-league seasons.
Nov 10 2023Kluber (shoulder) didn't commit to pitching in 2024 when asked about his plans Friday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber missed the entire second half of the season due to shoulder inflammation, and he only posted a 7.04 ERA and 1.64 WHIP across 55 innings when healthy -- a far cry from his career 3.44 ERA and 1.13 WHIP. Given Kluber's health, recent performance and the fact he'll turn 38 in April, it's worth wondering if the two-time AL Cy Young Award winner will decide to hang up his cleats in the offseason.
Nov 3 2023The Red Sox declined Kluber's $11 million option for 2024 on Friday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shoulder problems kept Kluber from pitching past late June, and he only managed a 7.04 ERA and 1.64 WHIP while healthy. The right-hander will turn 38 in April, and he could have trouble finding a team willing to give him a spot in its rotation at this point in his career.
Sep 16 2023Kluber (shoulder) feels healthy but will not pitch again this season, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber has been throwing off a big-league mound since late June due to shoulder inflammation, but he'd been working his way back, making a pair of rehab appearances for Triple-A Worcester over the last week. With the Red Sox falling out of the playoff race, they won't ask the 37-year-old righty to put more miles on his arm in what have become essentially meaningless games. The fact that Kluber at least made it back for some rehab games bodes well for his readiness for the start of next season, though his 7.04 ERA in 55 innings this season means his opportunities may be limited.
Sep 13 2023Kluber (shoulder) allowed two hits and struck out two over 2.2 scoreless innings for Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber threw 23 strikes among his 35 pitches. This was his second rehab outing, and the right-hander has not allowed a run or walk. He's expected to pitch out of the bullpen after being activated off the injured list.
Sep 9 2023Kluber (shoulder) had his first rehab appearance pushed from Friday to Saturday, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber had been scheduled to pitch Friday for Triple-A Worcester, but a travel issue delayed the outing until Saturday. He will return to the Red Sox as a reliever.
Sep 6 2023Kluber (shoulder) has been cleared to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Portland on Friday, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber threw two innings of live batting practice prior to Tuesday's game against the Rays at Tropicana Field. The veteran right-hander was placed on the injured list in June and had an earlier rehab assignment stopped when he experienced continued shoulder issues after two starts. Kluber will work out of the bullpen when he returns to the Red Sox.
Sep 3 2023Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Saturday that Kluber (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session soon, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: If all goes well in the session, Kluber will go on a rehab assignment. Cora said the team hopes the right-hander can pitch again this season.
Aug 25 2023Boston transferred Kluber (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list Friday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This move clears out a 40-man roster spot for reliever Zack Weiss, who has been claimed off waivers from the Angels. Kluber has been sidelined since June 21 because of a shoulder injury and there remains no timetable for his return to the Red Sox. The veteran right-hander just recently resumed playing catch.
Jul 29 2023The Red Sox shut down Kluber (shoulder) from all baseball activity Saturday, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber suffered a setback during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester, and will now have his return date pushed back. There's been no word on how severe Kluber's setback is, but he figures to still be multiple weeks away from returning to Boston. The 37-year-old righty held a 7.04 ERA and 1.64 WHIP through 55 innings before getting injured in late June.
Jul 21 2023Kluber (shoulder) tossed two scoreless innings in his rehab debut Friday with Double-A Portland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber entered the game out of the bullpen but got his pitch count up to 35 while scattering one hit with no walks and one strikeout over the two scoreless frames. It's unclear at this point whether the Red Sox plan to bring him back as a starter or reliever, though he probably will get stretched out a bit more in his next rehab outing. He's been on the shelf since June 21 due to right shoulder inflammation.
Jul 14 2023Kluber (shoulder) is trending toward making his first rehab start July 21, Mike Monaco of ESPN reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He has been throwing bullpen sessions and has not pitched in a game since June 20. If he needs two rehab starts, Kluber could return July 31. He had a 9.45 ERA and 1.95 WHIP in six June starts.
Jul 10 2023Kluber (shoulder) threw a 30-pitch bullpen session at Fenway Park on Sunday, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boston manager Alex Cora was encouraged by the session, noting Kluber looked much better than he did in the days and weeks leading up to his placement on the injured list June 21. "Healthwise, he feels a lot stronger, which is good. You can see the sharpness of the pitches and the ability to locate in that bullpen," Cora said. The right-hander's next step will be a two-inning bullpen Thursday.
Jun 21 2023The Red Sox placed Kluber on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with right shoulder inflammation, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With a 7.04 ERA and 1.64 WHIP through 55 innings, Kluber hasn't been particularly sharp all season. Now, he'll be put on the shelf for the next two weeks as the Red Sox continue to battle injuries to their pitching staff. Infield prospect David Hamilton was called up from Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move.
Jun 20 2023Kluber picked up the save in Tuesday's 10-4 victory over the Twins. He allowed four runs on five hits and one walk while striking out two over three innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber has served as a long reliever for the Red Sox since moving to the bullpen in late May and picked up a save in his first opportunity despite giving up four runs. The bullpen experiment has garnered mixed results for Boston, with Kluber giving up one or fewer runs in four of his seven relief appearances, but he's allowed a combined 13 runs in the other three. Regardless, it's unlikely Kluber will receive many high-leverage looks unless he turns things around in a major way.
Jun 9 2023Kluber allowed seven runs on 11 hits and one walk while striking out one over 3.1 relief innings in Thursday's 10-3 loss to Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber made his third appearance since moving from the rotation to the bullpen, taking over from Matt Dermody in the fifth inning. and he was left in for an ugly sixth inning despite allowing eight consecutive hits to start the frame. Manager Alex Cora told Ian Browne of MLB.com that he wanted to "reset our bullpen" and get ready for a three-game weekend series in New York against the Yankees. Kluber, who was Boston's Opening Day starter and a two-time Cy Young Award winner in his days with Cleveland, watched his ERA swell to 7.13 following the outing as he tries to adjust to a low-leverage role.
Jun 2 2023Kluber was activated Friday from the paternity list, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber has returned to the Red Sox and is likely to get a start in one half of Saturday's doubleheader against the Rays. He was moved to the bullpen last week but did not make a relief appearance prior to being excused from the team. It's a little uncertain what the season-long plan will be for the veteran right-hander, though his fantasy appeal figures to remain quite low no matter the role.
May 30 2023Kluber was placed on the paternity leave list by the Red Sox on Tuesday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber and his family just welcomed a new baby, so he'll be away from the club for a few days. Ryan Sherriff is taking his spot in the bullpen.
May 24 2023Kluber has been moved to the bullpen, Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed Wednesday in a radio interview with "Gresh and Fauria" on WEEI 93.7, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cora had said earlier this week that Kluber would make his next start, but the skipper has apparently changed his mind. Kluber has been dreadful after inking a one-year, $10 million contract over the offseason, putting up a 6.26 ERA and 34:18 K:BB across 41.2 innings covering nine starts. That, combined with Tanner Houck's strong showing his last time out, is the impetus behind Kluber's demotion. The 37-year-old wouldn't seem to be a great fit for relief and figures to be relegated to a mop-up role.
May 22 2023Boston manager Alex Cora said Kluber will make his next start Sunday in Arizona, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber lasted just 2.1 innings in a loss to the Padres on Sunday and walked three batters during a four-run first inning. With Garrett Whitlock (elbow) expected to be activated from the 15-day injured list to start this coming Saturday, Boston's rotation will increase to six men. Kluber had been off the radar when it came to potential rotation removals the last few weeks, but it's becoming hard for the Red Sox to continue to hand him starts while he's sporting a 6.26 ERA and 18 walks over 41.2 innings this season.
May 21 2023Kluber (2-6) yielded five runs (one earned) over 2.1 innings and took the loss against the Padres on Sunday. He allowed three hits and three walks while striking out one batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Padres jumped all over Kluber in the first inning, plating four runs. He was later charged with one more run in the third after he was removed from the game. Just one of the runs allowed was earned, meaning Kluber dropped his ERA from 6.41 to 6.26. On the bright side, this was his first start all year without giving up a home run. Kluber's next start is currently lined up to be in Arizona.
May 14 2023Kluber (2-5) allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks over five innings Sunday, striking out five and taking a loss against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Most of the damage against Kluber on Sunday came via the long ball, including Andrew Knizner's two-run shot in the fourth inning. Kluber was 2-0 in his last three starts after beginning the year 0-4 but found his way back to the loss column. His ERA rose to an ugly 6.41 with a 33:15 K:BB through eight starts. Kluber's next start is currently projected to be in San Diego.
May 6 2023Kluber (2-4) earned the win over Philadelphia on Saturday, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out one batter over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber was far from dominant in the outing, as he induced just nine swinging strikes and punched out only one batter. However, he didn't issue any walks and kept the Phillies away from big innings, allowing a single run in each of the second, fourth and fifth frames. Kluber needed 91 pitches to get through five innings, but that was enough for him to pick up his second victory. He began the campaign with four straight losses, but he's improved with two wins over his past three starts, allowing a tolerable seven earned runs over 16.1 frames during that stretch.
May 2 2023Kluber did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks over 5.1 innings during a 6-5 loss to the Blue Jays. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber was spotted a 2-0 lead after the first, but he quickly coughed up the advantage by giving up a three-run home run to Bo Bichette in the second. However, that was the only blemish on the right-hander's ledger, as he was pulled at 104 pitches with one out in the sixth. Monday's performance was a mixed bag for Kluber, who tied season highs with four walks and seven strikeouts, and his overall numbers (6.44 ERA and 1.40 WHIP) continue to look bleak despite a couple of solid outings. He'll look to find his footing during his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to take place during a three-game weekend set versus St. Louis.
Apr 5 2023Kluber (0-2) took the loss Wednesday as the Red Sox were downed 4-1 by the Pirates, allowing one run on three hits and a walk over five innings while striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander didn't pitch poorly, tossing 44 of 67 pitches for strikes before exiting, but Kluber left the game with Boston down 1-0 and they never found a tying run. While his Cy Young days are behind him, Kluber could still be able to provide the Red Sox with solid outings. He'll take a 6.48 ERA and 6:5 K:BB through 8.1 innings into his next start, and while he potentially lines up for a two-step next week, the return of Garrett Whitlock (hip) could shuffle the team's rotation and provide Kluber with an extra day of rest instead.
Mar 30 2023Kluber (0-1) earned the loss Thursday against the Orioles, giving up five earned runs off of six hits and four walks while striking out four batters through 3.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber had a solid spring and made comments about how much his command had improved during camp, though that all seemed to go out the window Thursday against Baltimore. The 36-year-old veteran put up a 4.34 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with the Rays last season, and it didn't take long to feel the effects of pitching in hitter-friendly Fenway Park.
Mar 16 2023Kluber allowed one run on four hits and one walk while striking out six over five innings in Wednesday's spring start against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: On the day Kluber was named Boston's Opening Day starter, the right-hander authored the best of his four Grapefruit League outings. The 36-year-old commented on the progression he's made since the first outing, noting his ability to command pitches and throw them for strikes, per CJ Haddad of MLB.com. Kluber has allowed three runs on 13 hits and five walks while striking out 14 over 12.2 spring innings.
Mar 15 2023Kluber will start Opening Day versus the Orioles on March 30, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Alex Cora confirmed Wednesday that Kluber will toe the rubber for the season opener at Fenway Park, stating that he informed Kluber of that decision in January. Kluber signed with the Red Sox this offseason and is looking to recapture some of his former glory as he joins his fourth team in four years. The right-hander produced a serviceable 4.34 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with 139 strikeouts over 164 innings in 31 starts with Tampa Bay in 2022; however, his ERA has been at 3.83 or higher since 2018 after clocking in below that figure for each of the five seasons prior.
Mar 12 2023Manager Alex Cora said Sunday there's a "good chance" Kluber starts against the Orioles on Opening Day, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cora indicated he made the decision during the offseason that Chris Sale won't get the Opening Day nod, and Kluber is the current favorite to start. Kluber joined the Red Sox on a one-year deal that includes a club option for 2024 after he posted a 4.34 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 139:21 K:BB across 164 innings for the Rays last year.
Mar 11 2023Kluber allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three over three innings in Friday's spring start against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber allowed his first Grapefruit League runs over three appearances. He possesses a 2.35 ERA with eight strikeouts over 7.2 innings. The right-hander will likely have at least three more spring outings to get ready for the regular season.
Mar 6 2023Kluber allowed two hits and two walks while striking out four over 2.2 scoreless innings in Sunday's spring start against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber fanned the side in the first inning then worked around two baserunners in the second before leaving with the bases loaded in the third. All eight outs were either strikeouts or groundouts. Kluber has allowed four hits and two walks while striking out five over 4.2 innings.
Mar 1 2023Kluber allowed two hits and struck out one over two scoreless innings in Tuesday's spring game against Miami. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber was the first member of Boston's projected rotation to take the hill and worked around a pair of hits, including a leadoff double in the second inning. He threw 26 pitches (18 strikes) in what looked like a routine outing for the 36-year-old veteran. "He went through his progression, threw strikes, got weak contact," Red Sox manager Alex Cora told Ian Browne of MLB.com. "Now we'll move on to the next one." According to Browne, Kluber's next start is scheduled for Sunday, when he'll throw three innings.
Feb 22 2023Kluber will make his first spring start Feb. 28 against the Marlins, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Red Sox manager Alex Cora revealed his planned rotation for the first few spring games with Kluber being the first projected regular member of the rotation. The manager did not mention projected starters beyond Tuesday's night game against Miami. A slate of minor league pitchers will throw Friday's seven-inning exhibition against Northeastern University, a traditional spring kickoff for Boston. Saturday's starter is TBA while Josh Winckowski (Sunday) and Kutter Crawford (Monday) will follow.
Feb 18 2023Kluber threw 31 pitches in a bullpen session Friday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber is coming off a fully healthy season, his first since 2018. In 31 starts for the Rays, the right-hander posted a 4.34 ERA and showed hints of an effective pitcher that previously earned a Cy Young Award. The 36-year-old is looking to build off last season and will slot in the middle of Boston's rotation.
Dec 28 2022Kluber and the Red Sox agreed Wednesday on a one-year, $10 million contract that includes an $11 million club option for 2024 and additional incentives, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 36-year-old makes his offseason home in Massachusetts, which may have factored into his decision to continue his career in Boston after a one-year stint in Tampa Bay. Though Kluber was able to steer clear of the health concerns that derailed him in each of the prior three seasons, the two-time American League Cy Young Award winner didn't return to peak form in 2022. His strikeout rate (20.2 percent) took a dramatic dip along with fastball velocity (88.9 miles per hour average), though a career-best 3.0 percent walk rate helped him maintain a respectable 1.21 WHIP over 164 innings. Altogether, Kluber still performed comfortably above the league median (117 ERA-, with 100 being average), so his addition should bring some stability to a Boston rotation that will be counting on two veterans with even more troubling injury histories (Chris Sale and James Paxton), not to mention younger arms such as Garrett Whitlock, Tanner Houck and Brayan Bello with more limited track records as starters at the big-league level.
Oct 2 2022Kluber (10-10) took the loss Sunday, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk over five innings against the Astros. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jose Altuve led off the game against Kluber with a bunt single, and Jeremy Pena followed with a two-run homer on a first-pitch cutter. Kluber held the Astros scoreless through five innings after that point, but the damage was enough to saddle him with his 10th loss on the season. The 2022 campaign was much of a bounceback campaign for the veteran, as his 164 innings pitched were the most he's thrown since he logged five consecutive seasons of 200 or more innings from 2014 to 2018. He finishes with a 4.34 ERA on the season.
Sep 27 2022Kluber allowed three runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out five in four innings in a 6-5 extra-innings win Tuesday in Cleveland. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All three runs against Kluber came with two outs as Jose Ramirez tripled in a run in the third and Steven Kwan had a two-run single in the fourth. Kluber needed 91 pitches to get through the four innings and was removed rather than face the heart of Cleveland's lineup a third time. It's been feast or famine for the 36-year-old in September as he's tossed seven innings while allowing one run or fewer on two occasions and given up 13 runs in 10.1 innings in his other three outings combined.
Sep 21 2022Kluber tossed seven innings, giving up one run on six hits and a walk while striking out two in Wednesday's loss to the Astros. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber went seven strong Wednesday, surrendering just one run on an Aledmys Diaz first inning single. The 36-year-old rebounded well after a couple tough starts, producing his fifth quality start in his last seven starts. Kluber now owns a 4.30 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with 130 punchouts over 155 innings in 29 starts this season.
Sep 17 2022Kluber (10-9) took the loss to Texas on Friday, allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out six and walking none over 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For the fifth time in a row and the 15th time this season, Kluber did not walk a batter in a game. Unfortunately for Kluber and the Rays, he gave up four runs, giving him 10 earned in his last 6.1 innings pitched. The veteran righty's ERA spiked to 4.44 on the year after Friday's contest. Kluber is tentatively scheduled to face another tough matchup versus the Astros in his next appearance.
Sep 10 2022Kluber (10-8) took the loss Saturday, allowing six runs on eight hits over two-thirds of an inning against the Yankees. He did not record a strikeout or a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber simply did not have it on this particular afternoon. The Yankees started the home half of the first inning with seven consecutive singles, and an eighth single in the frame ultimately chased Kluber from the contest. The right-hander had turned in four consecutive quality starts coming into Saturday's game, and there wasn't any indication of an injury from the team afterward.
Sep 4 2022Kluber (10-7) earned the win against the Yankees on Saturday, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out four and walking none over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a vintage Kluber performance Saturday, as he limited the Yankees' offense to just two hits. He tossed 62 of 88 pitches for strikes across seven frames. Kluber now has three straight wins in his last three appearances and is on a streak of four quality starts. He has five quality starts in his last six games, with the exception being a seven-run clunker against the Orioles. After that game spiked his ERA to 4.40, Kluber has pitched well and his ERA now sits at 4.00.
Aug 28 2022Kluber yielded three runs on eight hits while striking out four over six innings Sunday. He earned a win against the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber was tagged with three solo home runs in Sunday's win, beginning with Franchy Cordero's 403-foot blast in the third inning. It's the first time the veteran righty has given up multiple home runs in a start since May 10. He's now sporting a 4.21 ERA and a stellar 118:18 K:BB through 134.2 frames. However, despite going 4-2 over his last eight starts, Kluber owns a 5.40 ERA during that span. He's projected to face the Yankees at home next weekend.
Aug 23 2022Kluber (8-7) earned the win after he tossed six innings, giving up one run on five hits while striking out three in Tuesday's win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber pitched five scoreless frames before Mike Trout took him deep for a solo shot in the top of the sixth, accounting for the only blemish on the right-hander's line Tuesday. The 36-year-old has now registered two consecutive quality starts after he got blown up for seven runs Aug. 12 versus the Orioles. Kluber now owns a 4.20 ERA and 1.16 WHIP with 114 strikeouts over 128.2 innings in 24 outings this year.
Aug 18 2022Kluber did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk over six innings against the Yankees. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber allowed a two-run homer from shortstop Gleyber Torres in the sixth in addition to doubles from Andrew Benintendi and Aaron Judge. The righty has struggled lately with a 5.62 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 49.2 innings during his last nine starts. Additionally, the 36-year-old veteran has allowed four runs or more in five of these nine outings.
Aug 12 2022Kluber (7-7) yielded seven runs on 10 hits and a walk over 5.2 innings Friday, striking out four and taking a loss against Baltimore. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber gave up a solo home run to Adley Rutschman in the first inning but most of the damage against him didn't come until the sixth. The veteran righty was charged with four runs in the frame, including one after he was removed from the contest. Kluber has given up at least three runs in five straight starts, posting an unsightly 6.91 ERA during that stretch. He'll carry a 4.40 ERA into his projected road start against the Yankees next week.
Aug 5 2022Kluber yielded three runs on seven hits over six innings in Friday's win over Detroit. He struck out five and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All three runs that scored on Kluber came in the first two innings, including Riley Greene's two-run homer in the second frame. The 6-foot-4 righty was in line to take the loss before Tampa Bay completed the comeback victory. He had coughed up 12 runs over his previous three starts and he now owns a 4.05 ERA through 21 starts. Kluber is projected to face the Orioles at home next week.
Jul 31 2022Kluber (7-6) allowed four earned runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out 10 across six innings to earn the win Saturday against the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber allowed only one earned run through five innings of work, but he served up a three-run homer to Andres Gimenez to partially spoil his outing. Despite the long ball, Kluber racked up a season-high 10 strikeouts -- primarily on the strength of 23 called strikes. Kluber has allowed four earned runs in three consecutive starts spanning 17 frames, though Saturday's outing was encouraging. Overall, he owns a 4.03 ERA and 94:16 K:BB across 105 innings on the season.
Jul 26 2022Kluber (6-6) took the loss Monday, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits and a walk over five innings as the Rays fell 5-1 to the Orioles. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The score was tied 1-1 heading into the fifth inning but Kluber hit the wall at that point, loading the bases on two singles and a hit-by-pitch to set the stage for a four-run inning by Baltimore. The veteran right-hander got the hook after 88 pitches (66 strikes) and saw his three-game win streak snapped. On the season, Kluber carries a 3.91 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 84:16 K:BB through 99 innings. The 36-year-old's days of being a fantasy ace are well behind him.
Jul 17 2022Kluber (6-5) earned the win Sunday against Baltimore, striking out three in six innings while allowing four runs on eight hits, a walk and a hit batsman. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After holding Baltimore scoreless through three innings, Kluber struggled in the fourth and gave up two runs on four hits. In the sixth, Rougned Odor tagged Kluber for a two-run homer with two outs to make it a 6-4 game. He came out after throwing 83 pitches, which has been normal for the 36-year-old all season as he's averaging 77 pitches per outing and has not eclipsed six innings in any start. Coming off three injury-riddled seasons, the Rays have been hesitant to overwork the veteran and it has paid off as he's compiled a 3.73 ERA and 82:15 K:BB through 94 innings.
Jul 12 2022Kluber (5-5) earned the win Tuesday over Boston, striking out seven in six innings while allowing two runs on four hits and a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber faced the minimum through the first four innings, striking out five and eliminating the lone baserunner on a double-play ball. After allowing two singles, he gave up a two-run triple to Bobby Dalbec with two outs in the fifth. The seven strikeouts were his most in a start since recording eight in a game May 16. Should he get another start before the All-Star break, it would be Sunday against Baltimore.
Jul 7 2022Kluber (4-5) earned the win against Boston on Wednesday, allowing no runs on three hits while striking out five and walking none over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber was dominant in Wednesday's win, throwing 57 of 80 pitches for strikes across six frames for his fifth quality start in his last eight games. He bounced back well after allowing five runs in three innings in his last appearance. The righty threw his fourth scoreless outing of the year and lowered his ERA to 3.62.
Jul 1 2022Kluber (3-5) took the loss Friday against the Blue Jays, giving up five runs on seven hits and two walks in three innings of work while striking out just one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber faced the minimum through two innings but wound up facing 11 batters in a five-run third inning. Six of the first seven batters in that frame reached base, with five of them doing so via a double. He was replaced by Phoenix Sanders to start the fourth inning. If there's a positive here for Kluber, it's that the poor outing doesn't appear to be part of any sort of trend, as he'd given up a total of four earned runs across his last three starts. He'll try to recapture that level of performance Wednesday in Boston.
Jun 25 2022Kluber pitched 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out six in Saturday's win over the Pirates. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber was effective in this one, tossing 47 of his 63 pitches for strikes. Diego Castillo took him deep for a solo shot in the top of the third and Bryan Reynolds singled in another run later in the frame, accounting for all the damage against him. Kluber has now surrendered three or fewer runs in eight straight outings, producing a 2.70 ERA over those contests. The 36-year-old now owns a 3.45 ERA and 1.08 WHIP with 66 strikeouts over 73 frames through 14 starts in 2022.
Jun 19 2022Kluber (3-4) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out six in six innings to take the loss during Sunday's game against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber posted a second consecutive quality start Sunday, but he's been forced to settle for losses in his last two outings. The 36-year-old gave up eight runs during the Rays' loss to the Angels on May 10 but has settled down since then and hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of his last seven outings. Across those seven starts, he's posted a 2.61 ERA and 0.92 WHIP in 38 innings. Kluber tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Pirates on Saturday.
Jun 14 2022Kluber (3-3) took the loss Tuesday against the Yankees, allowing two unearned runs on four hits, a hit batsman and a walk while striking out three in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber held the Yankees hitless through the first three innings but two Tampa Bay errors led to his unearned runs in the fourth inning. The veteran has had two strong outings against the Yankees this season, allowing just one earned run in 12 innings. Over his last six starts the 36-year-old has a 2.53 ERA and a 27:4 K:BB in 32 innings.
Jun 9 2022Kluber (3-2) allowed three earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out five across five innings to earn the win Wednesday against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber was handed a five-run lead within the first three innings and took advantage to earn the win. Despite giving up three runs, he wasn't hit particularly hard, as Tyler O'Neill registered the only extra-base hit against Kluber with a solo home run in the fourth inning. Kluber has allowed three or fewer earned runs in five consecutive starts, which has helped him maintain a 3.88 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 51:9 K:BB across 55.2 innings on the season.
Jun 2 2022Kluber (2-2) allowed one earned run on four hits and no walks while striking out four across six innings to earn the win Thursday against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber held the Rangers off the scoreboard until he surrendered a solo home run to Marcus Semien in the sixth inning. Though an eight-run outing against the Angels on May 10 bloats his overall line, Kluber has allowed two earned runs or fewer in eight of his 10 starts this season. He's particularly shown excellent control by surrendering only eight walks across 50.2 innings.
May 28 2022Kluber allowed a run on three hits and struck out five in six innings versus the Yankees on Saturday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber alternated effective and short starts during May, ending the month on a high note with one of his best outings of the year. The only run against him came on an Anthony Rizzo sacrifice fly in the first inning. Kluber has a 4.03 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 42:8 K:BB in 44.2 innings across nine starts this year, but it's a pair of bad games (four runs allowed to the Red Sox on April 22 and eight runs to the Angels on May 10) that have inflated his numbers. He carries a 1-2 record into next week's projected road start versus the Rangers.
May 22 2022Kluber allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two in three innings during Sunday's loss to the Orioles. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Although Kluber held Baltimore to just two runs early in Sunday's matchup, he was pulled after throwing 73 pitches over three innings. The right-hander has recorded quality starts in three of his last five outings, but he's also been pulled after three innings in two of his last three starts. Over his first eight appearances in 2022, the 36-year-old has posted a 4.42 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 38.2 innings. Kluber tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Yankees on Saturday.
May 16 2022Kluber didn't factor into the decision Monday against the Tigers after allowing two runs on four hits while striking out eight over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber gave up both earned runs in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run blast by Jonathan Schoop, but he was otherwise solid on a day the Rays' offense struggled. It was a positive sign to see the right-hander bounce back following a horrendouse outing his last time out, and he's now surrendered two runs or fewer in three of his last four starts.
May 10 2022Kluber (1-2) took the loss after allowing eight runs on 11 hits in three innings while striking out two in a 12-0 defeat Tuesday against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber was hit hard throughout the night, allowing multiple runs in each of his three frames and giving up homers to Mike Trout and Chad Wallach. Coming into the game, Kluber had been quite stingy, allowing only seven runs and two homers in 26.2 innings. Following the rough start, the veteran's ERA jumped from 2.36 to 4.60. Coincidentally, the only other time in his 12-year career that he allowed eight runs was May 10, 2013, nine years ago to the day.
May 4 2022Kluber allowed three hits and one walk while striking out seven across six scoreless innings Wednesday against the Athletics. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber needed only 64 pitches to retire 18 batters, and he has now completed six innings in consecutive starts. He also generated 10 swinging strikes to aid him to a season-best seven strikeouts. Kluber has now allowed two or fewer earned runs in four of his five starts to begin the campaign, and he owns a 2.36 ERA with a 25:6 K:BB across 26.2 frames.
Apr 30 2022Kluber (1-1) picked up the win in Friday's 6-1 victory over the Twins, allowing one run on one hit over six innings. He struck out six without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander fired an efficient 71 pitches (48 strikes) before exiting the game with his first quality start of the season. Kluber isn't the ace he was at his peak in Cleveland, but the 36-year-old has had a solid start to 2022, posting a 3.05 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 18:5 K:BB through 20.2 innings.
Apr 22 2022Kluber (0-1) allowed four runs on 11 hits in five innings, taking the loss Friday against Boston. He walked a batter and struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber gave up a pair of runs in both the first and third innings. The damage could have been greater had he not induced two double-play ground balls. After allowing only two runs and seven hits combined in his first two starts, the righty put together his least effective start of the season, allowing 12 of 25 batters to reach safely.
Apr 17 2022Kluber allowed two earned runs on four hits and no walks while striking out four across five innings Saturday against the White Sox. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber surrendered a two-run home run to Jose Abreu in the fourth inning, accounting for the only damage he allowed in his outing. He needed only 75 pitches to retire 15 hitters, which was a positive step forward in efficiency after he issued four free passes across only 4.2 innings in his opening start of the campaign. Otherwise, results have been positive for Kluber early on as he's allowed a mere two earned runs with nine strikeouts across 9.2 frames.
Apr 10 2022Kluber allowed three hits and four walks over 4.2 shutout innings in Sunday's win over Baltimore. He struck out five and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber was one out away from finishing the fifth inning and earning a win in his Rays debut before walking Cedric Mullins and yielding a single to Ryan Mountcastle. He tossed 52 of 87 pitches for strikes and forced 12 whiffs. The veteran righty posted a 3.83 ERA in 80 innings with the Yankees last season. Kluber is lined up to face the White Sox in Chicago next week.
Apr 5 2022Kluber gave up one run over five innings with five strikeouts and one walk in Tuesday's spring training loss to Atlanta. He gave up five earned runs with eight strikeouts and one walk in 8.1 innings this spring. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber's 8:1 K:BB ratio is encouraging as he enters the regular season as he looks sharp despite a spring 5.40 ERA and 1.60 WHIP. He's set to make his first regular-season start April 10 against Baltimore.
Nov 28 2021Kluber and the Rays agreed to a one-year, $8 million deal Sunday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber was effective when healthy last season with New York, posting a 3.83 ERA and 1.34 WHIP. He was limited to 80 innings due to a right shoulder strain, and he's thrown only 136.2 total frames since the beginning of 2019. The Rays figure to manage Kluber's workload so that the 36-year-old has a better chance of staying healthy throughout the 2022 season.
Sep 30 2021Kluber allowed two earned runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out two across 4.2 innings Thursday against the Blue Jays. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber allowed at least one hit in every inning that he pitched, though he did manage to keep the Yankees within a run before an early exit. He has failed to work five innings In four of five starts since returning from the injured list in early September. In that same span, Kluber has a 4.37 ERA with a 21:8 K:BB across 22.2 frames. Kluber will end the regular season with a 3.83 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 80 innings.
Sep 22 2021Kluber tossed 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out four in the win over the Rangers on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After tossing a no-hitter in his last start against them, the 35-year-old struggled to keep the Rangers off the bases in this one, ultimately surrendering three separate RBI-singles. The eight hits allowed were his highest total of the season, while he went without giving up a walk for the first time. Overall he has posted a 5.73 ERA and 1.59 WHIP over 22 innings since returning from the 60-day injured list on Aug. 30. Kluber is expected to face the Blue Jays on Tuesday in his next start.
Sep 17 2021Kluber (5-3) allowed four hits and two walks while striking out four in six shutout innings to earn the win over Cleveland on Friday. He also hit one batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander worked a full starter's assignment, throwing 61 of 95 pitches in a fairly dominant start. Kluber had struggled a bit in his first three games since returning from a shoulder injury, allowing 11 runs in 11.2 innings in that span, but he was much closer to his best form Friday. The strong start lowered his ERA to 3.68 with a 1.28 WHIP and 76:32 K:BB through 71 innings overall. Kluber lines up for a home start versus his other former team, Texas, next week.
Sep 12 2021Kluber allowed four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six across four innings in the win over the Mets on Saturday. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber surrendered a home run in the third inning to Javier Baez. He allowed three runs in the second inning, and it took him 82 pitches to get through four frames. The 35-year-old has not thrown more than four innings in his three starts since returning from the 60-day injured list with a shoulder injury. He has a 4.02 ERA and 1.31 WHIP with 72 strikeouts in 65 innings.
Sep 5 2021Kluber allowed two runs on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts in 3.2 innings in a no-decision versus Baltimore on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander surrendered a solo home run to Austin Hays in the second inning and a sacrifice fly to Jorge Mateo in the fourth to account for the runs. Kluber threw 46 of 78 pitches for strikes in his second start back from a shoulder strain. The right-hander has walked five in 7.2 innings since he returned, showing a lack of control likely due to his extended absence. He has a 3.69 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 66:28 K:BB across 61 innings overall. Kluber lines up for a road start versus the Mets in next weekend's Subway Series, but he's yet to handle a full starter's workload, and it's unclear how deep he'll be able to pitch in his next turn.
Aug 31 2021Kluber allowed five runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six over four innings against the Angels on Monday. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Monday was Kluber's first start in just over three months after spending time on the injured list with a right shoulder strain. Kluber held the Angels scoreless for the first three innings but broke down in the fourth. He allowed a run to score after three consecutive base hits and then loaded the bases with a walk before surrendering a grand slam to Jack Mayfield. The 35-year-old now owns a 3.61 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and the 61:25 K:BB over 57.1 innings. He'll look to have a bounceback performance against Baltimore over the weekend.
Aug 30 2021The Yankees reinstated Kluber (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list before his start Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As expected, Kluber comes off the IL, where he's been since the end of May, to start Monday's game against the Angels. The righty won't throw more than 65-75 pitches, although he figures to build up his workload in the last month of the regular season. He fills the 40-man roster spot of Zack Britton (elbow), who went on the 60-day IL on Monday.
Aug 26 2021Kluber (shoulder) will be activated to start Monday's game against the Angels, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber has been sidelined since May 27 and has slowly been ramping up his workload during a rehab assignment. After throwing 60 pitches in his latest outing Tuesday, Kluber has proven healthy enough to return to a big-league mound. However, manager Aaron Boone has already said that Andrew Heaney is likely to pitch behind Kluber as a piggyback starter, implying that Kluber will not immediately take on a full workload.
Aug 24 2021Kluber (shoulder) was transferring to Double-A Somerset to make a rehab start Tuesday, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber made second rehab start with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last week, and he'll move to Double-A for another outing Tuesday. The right-hander threw 56 pitches over three-plus frames in the previous outing and should continue ramping up his workload.
Aug 19 2021Kluber (shoulder) tossed three-plus innings for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It wasn't a dominant performance by any means, but Kluber showed improvement after allowing five runs across 1.1 innings in his first rehab appearance last week. He also upped his pitch count from 45 to 56 on Tuesday while reportedly looking good with his curveball, per Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger. The veteran right-hander is likely to make at least one more minor-league rehab start and could return to the Yankees by the end of the month if that goes well.
Aug 16 2021Kluber (shoulder) will report to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday to make a rehab start, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber made his first rehab outing Thursday with Double-A Somerset and gave up five runs on two hits with four walks and one strikeout in 1.1 innings. He threw 45 pitches in that contest, and he should continue building up his workload as he moves up to Triple-A. The 35-year-old figures to require another rehab start or two beyond Tuesday before returning from the injured list.
Aug 13 2021Kluber (shoulder) pitched 1.1 innings for Double-A Somerset on Thursday, allowing five runs on two hits and four walks while striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander had a hard time finding the plate in his first game action since May 25. Per Marly Rivera of ESPN.com, Kluber threw only 20 of 45 pitches for strikes, and he issued as many free passes as he registered outs. The veteran hurler said he was encouraged by how he felt after the outing, however, and indicated that he won't be putting a lot of stock in the results, according to Mike Ashmore of PatriotsBaseball.com. He'll likely need a few more rehab appearances before potentially rejoining the Yankees.
Aug 9 2021Kluber (shoulder) will make a rehab start at Double-A Somerset on Thursday, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber has faced live hitters in each of his last two throwing sessions, and he threw 42 pitches in a simulated game Saturday. Although the right-hander felt tired near the end of the simulated game, the team's medical staff still deemed him ready to begin a rehab assignment at the end of the week. Kluber has continued to trend in the right direction since he was placed on the injured list in late May, but he'll likely require several rehab appearances before he's cleared for activation.
Aug 8 2021Kluber (shoulder) threw 42 pitches in a simulated game Saturday, per MLB.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran hurler tossed 22 pitches in live batting practice Monday, and he nearly doubled that pitch count in Saturday's sim game. Kluber included cutters and sliders in the throwing session and did not appear to encounter any setbacks. Yankees manager Aaron Boone noted that Kluber pitched well but may have begun to tire toward the end of the session, which serves as a reminder that he still has obstacles to clear before rejoining the big club.
Aug 3 2021Kluber (shoulder) tossed 22 pitches in a live batting-practice session Monday, per MLB.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran hurler completed the session at Yankee Stadium, marking his first time throwing to live hitters since late May. According to manager Aaron Boone, the session went well. "It was really another positive step. He felt good coming out of [the session]," said Boone. Kluber still has some obstacles to clear before beginning a rehab assignment, and he remains weeks away from a potential return to the big club.
Jul 30 2021Kluber (shoulder) threw a 30-pitch bullpen session Wednesday and is expected to start throwing to live hitters following one additional bullpen session, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander has now been out for over two months with a subscapularis strain in his right shoulder, but he appears to be moving closer to a return to the Yankees' rotation. His past two bullpen sessions have lasted 20 and 30 pitches, and he'll likely increase that number once more before facing live hitters. If he continues to progress without any setbacks, Kluber could return to the big club in late August or early September.
Jul 23 2021Kluber (shoulder) threw 20 pitches off a mound Friday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander was limited to throwing fastballs and came out of the bullpen session with no issues. It's the first time Kluber's been on a mound since landing on the injured list in late May, so it's a significant step in his rehab work. The 35-year-old still has a ways to go before a potential return date is pinpointed, and he's unlikely to rejoin the Yankees before September.
Jul 21 2021Kluber (shoulder) is tentatively scheduled to throw a bullpen session Friday, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Before locking Kluber in for his first mound work since he landed on the injured list in late May, the Yankees will re-evaluate the right-hander Thursday. He's been throwing off flat ground for several weeks now, and he increased his distance to 120 feet in Wednesday's session. The Yankees are hopeful that the right-hander will be ready to return from the 60-day injured list at some point in September.
Jul 18 2021Kluber (shoulder) has advanced to throwing from 120 feet and could toss a bullpen session by the end of next week, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber last pitched May 25, when he was removed from his start due to what was later diagnosed as a subscapularis strain in his right shoulder. He was eventually transferred to the 60-day IL and isn't eligible to return until late July. Though he's unlikely to be ready when first eligible, Kluber's possible progression to mound work within a week signals a major step in his recovery. Prior to getting hurt, the veteran right-hander was enjoying a solid campaign, posting a 3.04 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 9.3 K/9 across 10 starts.
Jul 13 2021Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said last week that he doesn't expect Kluber (shoulder) to return from the 60-day injured list until September, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since being shut down in late May with a strained right shoulder, Kluber has progressed to throwing off flat ground from 75 feet. He'll likely need to come close to doubling that distance before the Yankees clear him for bullpen sessions, and he'll have several more checkpoints to hit in the rehab process before the organization hones in on a possible target date for his return. Any setbacks suffered along the way would seriously jeopardize Kluber's chances of pitching again in 2021.
Jul 5 2021Kluber (shoulder) has been throwing from 90 feet for about a week, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber had previously been throwing from 75 feet, so he is very slowly progressing through a program that projects to allow him to rejoin the Yankees sometime in mid- to late-August. He stated that he will advance to 120 feet "whenever they tell me to" and explained that he doesn't know of an exact return date. Per Meredith Marakovits of YES Network, Kluber is confident that he will be back at some point this season.
Jun 26 2021General manager Brian Cashman said Saturday that Kluber (shoulder) is not expected to rejoin the starting rotation until August or September, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber has been working his way back from a subscapularis strain in his right shoulder that has sidelined him since late May. He extended his throwing distance to 75 feet earlier this week but still figures to be a ways away from throwing off a mound. Cashman said the right-hander could return in August but noted that a September activation from the 60-day IL appears more likely at this point.
Jun 25 2021Kluber (shoulder) has extended his throwing distance to 75 feet, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber is still only playing catch, but he's made slight progress in his throwing program. He isn't eligible to return from the injured list until late July, but a better idea of his return timetable could become clear once he's able to resume mound work.
Jun 16 2021Kluber (shoulder) recently began a throwing program and is playing catch from 60 feet, Justin Shackil of SiriusXM reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander was transferred to the 60-day injured list in early June and is now in the early stages of his throwing program. Kluber won't be eligible to be activated until late July, so he has plenty of time to ramp things up before being able to rejoin the rotation.
Jun 5 2021The Yankees moved Kluber (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The move frees up a roster spot as Kluber, yet to begin a throwing program, still projects to return around late July. Infielder Chris Gittens was signed Saturday to fill Kluber's spot.
Jun 3 2021Kluber (shoulder) is expected to begin a throwing program soon, though his overall return timeline hasn't changed, James Wagner of The New York Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber was originally expected to be shut down from throwing for four weeks after being diagnosed with a shoulder strain in late May. While it now looks as though he'll be throwing within two weeks of being shut down, that evidently simply represents a change in how the Yankees intend to go about his rehab rather than a change in his overall timeline. He'll presumably be brought along very cautiously at the start of his throwing program, with a return date in late July still the most likely outcome.
May 27 2021Kluber (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber will be shut down from throwing for four weeks after he was diagnosed with a subscapularis strain in his right shoulder, so his placement on the injured list doesn't come as a surprise. Right-hander Albert Abreu was recalled by the Yankees as part of a corresponding move. Since Kluber will need to build his arm back up after being shut down, he'll likely miss most of July while he recovers.
May 26 2021Kluber was diagnosed with a subscapularis strain in his right shoulder and will be shut down from throwing for four weeks, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 35-year-old will undergo a second MRI to confirm the diagnosis, but for now he can expect to be sidelined for the foreseeable future. The initial MRI was deemed precautionary when the right-hander exited Tuesday's start after three innings with shoulder tightness, but it appears the issue is more serious. Kluber will require some time to build his arm back up after being shut down for a month, so he'll be unavailable for most of July even if his recovery goes as planned.
May 25 2021Kluber was removed from Tuesday's start against the Blue Jays with tightness in his right shoulder. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 35-year-old didn't appear to be in any obvious discomfort Tuesday but was pulled after three innings due to the shoulder issue -- he allowed two runs on two hits and three walks while fanning five en route to his third loss of the season. Kluber will undergo an MRI on Wednesday to determine the severity and specifics of the injury. The veteran right-hander was limited to one inning last season due to a muscle tear in his right shoulder, so there's some obvious concern regarding Tuesday's departure.
May 19 2021Kluber (4-2) threw a no-hitter against the Rangers on Wednesday, striking out nine and walking a batter in the Yankees' 2-0 win. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber made history as the first Yankee to throw a no-hitter since 1999. The 35-year-old's lone blemish on the night was a one-out walk in the third to Charlie Culberson, but he went on to retire 20 straight batters to finish his historic performance. Kluber fell just short of his season high in strikeouts and walked under two hitters for just the second time this season. The two-time CY Young Award winner has had excellent command of his offspeed pitches to make up for his lack of velocity in his fastball this year. He now owns an impressive 2.86 ERA to go along with a 50:20 K:BB over 50.1 innings and will look to pick up his fifth win in six tries in his next outing.
May 15 2021Kluber (3-2) allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six over six innings as he was credited with a win against the Orioles on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber got off to a rough start by allowing a first-inning home run to Austin Hays but was able to find a groove for the next few frames before running into more trouble in the fifth. The 35-year-old gave up three more runs on four hits and a walk to give the Orioles a 4-2 lead. He exited the game after the sixth with his team still down two but was able to sneak away with a win after the Yankees scored three runs in the top of the seventh and were able to hold on for a 5-4 win. Kluber struggled with a 5.40 ERA over his first four starts of the year but has turned it around by posting a 2.39 ERA in his last four outings while also picking up three wins in the process. He'll look to keep things rolling in a scheduled road matchup against the Rangers next week.
May 8 2021Kluber threw 5.2 innings Saturday against the Nationals, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out six. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber allowed one run on a bases-loaded walk to Juan Soto in the third inning. He was pulled with two outs in the sixth after allowing the go-ahead run on an RBI single by Starlin Castro on his 101st pitch. The veteran was spared a loss when the Yankees tied the game in the bottom of the ninth and went on to win in extras. Kluber failed to finish the fifth inning in each of his first four starts of the year but has averaged 6.8 innings over his last three starts and now owns a 3.06 ERA on the season.
May 2 2021Kluber (2-2) allowed two hits and a walk while striking out 10 in eight scoreless innings to earn the win against the Tigers on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber had his best outing of the season Sunday and struck out a season-high 10 batters en route to the 100th win of his career. The right-hander got off to a lackluster start this year but has allowed just one run in 14.2 innings in his last two appearances. Kluber tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Nationals on Saturday.
Apr 27 2021Kluber (1-2) earned the win Tuesday against the Orioles after tossing 6.2 innings of one-run ball, allowing six hits and two walks while fanning five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber picked up his first win of the season Tuesday and delivered a dominant performance. This was the first time he pitched more than five innings in a game and also the first time he recorded a quality start, which is something huge for a player that has been slowed down heavily by injuries since the end of the 2018 season. Kluber still owns a 4.15 ERA across five starts, but this was certainly a step in the right direction. The veteran is slated to take the ball Sunday at home against the Tigers.
Apr 21 2021Kluber (0-2) allowed two earned runs on two hits and four walks while striking out two across 4.2 innings to take the loss Wednesday against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber worked through four innings fairly smoothly, prior to running into trouble in his final frame when he allowed a leadoff single and proceeded to walk three of the next five batters he faced. He exited the game with the bases loaded, though Nick Nelson promptly walked a run in. Through four starts this season, Kluber has yet to complete five innings of work, with Wednesday's outing marking his longest of the campaign. Though Kluber has often been a slow starter, he appears to be a long way from returning to form and has posted a 6.6 BB/9 and 1.8 HR/9 across 15 innings. He'll take the mound next Monday at Baltimore.
Apr 14 2021Kluber allowed three runs on six hits and two walks over four innings during Wednesday's 5-4 loss to the Blue Jays. He had four strikeouts and didn't factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran pounded the zone with 50 of his 77 pitches for strikes and generated 15 swinging strikes, but he had trouble keeping Toronto off the basepaths. Kluber has given up 10 runs (seven earned) on 16 hits with a 12:7 K:BB across 10.1 innings through three starts and has a tough matchup with Atlanta next week.
Apr 9 2021Kluber (0-1) allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks over 2.1 innings Friday, striking out three and taking a loss against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rays got to Kluber pretty early, bringing home two runs in the second inning. Despite the Yankees taking a 4-2 lead in the third, he then allowed four of the first five Rays on base before getting the hook. He would be charged with two more runs on Joey Wendle's double off Nick Nelson. The 6-foot-4 righty owns a 5.68 ERA and 8:5 K:BB through 6.1 innings this season. Kluber will face Toronto on the road Wednesday.
Apr 3 2021Kluber threw four innings Saturday against the Blue Jays, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber's velocity rarely got much about 90 mph, down a few ticks from the average of 92.0 mph he managed in his last healthy season, but it was a decent enough outing in terms of results. He showed a bit of wildness in the third inning, walking two batters and throwing a wild pitch before a throwing error by catcher Danny Jansen led to an unearned run. He later allowed Marcus Semien to homer to lead off the fifth before being pulled from the game, having thrown 74 pitches. It wasn't a return to peak form for the two-time Cy Young winner, but it was a respectable season debut for a player who's made just eight starts in the last two seasons.
Mar 24 2021Kluber's velocity has been down this spring, but the right-hander isn't worried about the decline, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber's velocity has reportedly been in the 90-92 mph range in spring training, per Rivera. That's down from the 93-94 mph mark he displayed during his peak but not much off from the 92.0 mph average velocity he posted during his last healthy season. Kluber has never been among the league's fastest throwers, so a drop in velocity may not impact him as much as it would other hurlers. So far this spring, the 34-year-old has registered a strong 1.86 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 9:3 K:BB across 9.2 innings.
Mar 13 2021Kluber hurled four innings in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against Pittsburgh, allowing two runs on four hits and no walks while striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber wasn't quite as effective as in his spring debut, when he pitched two perfect innings against Toronto. However, he got his pitch count up to 54 -- the most by any Yankees pitcher so far this spring. That's promising for a pitcher who combined for only 36.2 innings while dealing with injuries over the past two campaigns. Kluber is slotted to fill the second spot in New York's rotation in 2021.
Mar 3 2021Kluber pitched two perfect innings and struck out two batters during Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against Toronto. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber looked great in his first appearance in pinstripes, needing only 22 pitches -- 15 of which were strikes -- to retire six batters. Most importantly, he emerged from the outing healthy after missing nearly all of last season due to a shoulder injury. Kluber's performance Wednesday is certainly uplifting for the Yankees, who are counting on the veteran to fill a spot near the front of their rotation.
Feb 26 2021Kluber tossed two innings of live batting practice Friday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran hurler was tested in the session, facing the likes of Aaron Judge, DJ LeMahieu, Luke Voit and Gleyber Torres. Voit smashed a homer against Kluber, but that didn't stop manager Aaron Boone from feeling positive about the right-hander's session. "I feel really good about his progress," Boone said. "I thought he finished better than he started, and I think the stuff is overall pretty crisp. I'm encouraged where he's at." Kluber figures to slot in as the No. 2 starter for the Yankees this season.
Feb 19 2021Kluber stated Friday that he has had no setbacks with his right shoulder and that he is on a normal preparation schedule at this point in the spring, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber pitched only one inning last season due to a Grade 2 tear of the teres minor muscle in his right shoulder, but he indicated that he doesn't feel as if he is still rehabbing the shoulder. "I've had no issues with it now or anywhere along the rehab process," Kluber said. "That's encouraging. Honestly, I don't feel like I'm still working on improving the shoulder or anything like that. I think it's in a spot where, like any part of your body, it takes maintenance throughout the year. But I'm not putting any more emphasis on that than I am anything else at this point." The Yankees are counting on Kluber to fill a spot near the top of their rotation, though there are legitimate questions about his arsenal now that he's a few months away from turning 35. In addition, the 2017 AL Cy Young Award winner has hurled only 36.2 frames over the past two seasons and was already experiencing a drop in velocity during his last healthy season (2018).
Jan 15 2021Kluber is finalizing a one-year, $11 million contract with the Yankees on Friday, pending a physical, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber's market heated up in recent days following his throwing session Wednesday, and he'll head to the Yankees as long as he passes his physical. The two-time Cy Young Award winner impressed during his workout in front of scouts from at least 25 teams and will attempt to return to form over a full season after battling injuries over the past several years.
Jan 4 2021Kluber (shoulder) will throw in front of multiple teams on Jan. 13, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: If any team is able to sign the 2014 to 2018 version of Kluber this offseason for a significantly reduced price, they'll be walking away with a steal. The veteran righty won two Cy Youngs during those years while posting a 2.85 ERA. Heading into his age-35 season, however, it's far from guaranteed that Kluber is anywhere close to being that guy again, especially after battling injuries for most of the past two seasons, limiting him to just eight total starts, a stretch in which he posted a 5.65 ERA. The extent to which MLB clubs believe he'll be able to recapture his previous form should start to become clear after his throwing session.
Dec 18 2020Kluber (shoulder) is expected to throw for teams in early January, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber's 2020 campaign lasted all of one inning before he was shut down with a torn shoulder, meaning he's now made just eight starts over the last two years. Given his age (34) and recent injury history, there's a good chance he winds up stuck looking for a one-year, prove-it deal despite the fact that he's a two-time Cy Young Award winner. Kluber posted an ERA below 3.00 in each of his last two full seasons, meaning he still has plenty of upside, but given his age, it would hardly be a surprise if he never returned to his former glory.
Nov 2 2020Kluber (shoulder) was cleared to resume a throwing program Monday, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber threw a single inning for the Rangers this season before being shut down with a strained right shoulder. He's expected to resume mound work in December. This season was his second straight to be ruined by injury, as he made just seven generally poor starts in 2019 while battling a broken arm and a tight oblique. Those injuries add plenty of risk to the veteran righty's profile heading into his age-35 season, so he'll likely see considerably less interest than a pitcher with a career 3.16 ERA over a decade worth of work would normally receive.
Oct 28 2020The Rangers don't intend to exercise Kluber's (shoulder) $18 million team option for 2021, making him a free agent, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber will receive a $1 million buyout as he heads to the open market. After missing nearly all of his final season in Cleveland in 2019 with a broken arm and an oblique injury, Kluber was dealt to Texas last December with the expectation that he would solidify the top of the Rangers' rotation. Instead, he endured another injury-ruined season, as he was diagnosed with a Grade 2 right shoulder strain in late July after what ended up being his only appearance of 2020. Since he avoided shoulder surgery, the 34-year-old should be fully healthy in advance of spring training, but he'll likely have to settle for a low-cost, prove-it deal this winter on the heels of back-to-back lost years.
Sep 5 2020Kluber (shoulder) was officially ruled out for the season Saturday, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Unless he re-signs as a free agent this offseason, Kluber's Rangers career will have lasted all of one inning, as he didn't last long at all before straining his shoulder after coming over in an offseason trade. He only ever had an outside chance to return very late this year, but even that chance was snuffed out Saturday. Kluber will turn 35 early in the 2021 campaign and will enter that season having made a total of just eight starts over the last two years.
Jul 28 2020Kluber (shoulder) was placed on the 45-day injured list Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The move isn't much of a surprise, as Kluber will be shut down for at least four weeks after being diagnosed with a Grade 2 tear of the teres major muscle in his right shoulder Monday. If he's able to return at all this season, it will likely be very late in the year and in a relief role.
Jul 27 2020Kluber was diagnosed with a Grade 2 tear of the teres major muscle in his right shoulder Monday and will be placed on the injured list and shut down from throwing for at least four weeks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber left his season debut after just a single inning Sunday and didn't receive good news following an MRI after the game. As the four-week timeline covers just the period in which he'll be completely shut down, he'd presumably still be several weeks from returning to game action at that point even in a best-case scenario. In a season which lasts just two months, there seems to be a very real chance that he's already done for the year, though the Rangers have yet to completely rule him out at this point. Even if Kluber makes it back in action by season's end, his lengthy recovery timeline means that he will likely have to settle for a relief role if he does return, per Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Jul 26 2020Kluber was removed from Sunday's start against the Rockies after experiencing tightness in the back of his right shoulder. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 34-year-old completed one scoreless inning but didn't retake the field for his second frame due to the injury. Kluber's availability going forward is now in question, and he's scheduled to be evaluated further Monday.
Jul 16 2020Kluber threw 98 pitches over 5.2 innings during Wednesday's intrasquad game, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports. He allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber has routinely hit the five-inning mark during summer camp, whether that be simulated or intrasquad games, suggesting he'll be ready to provide length immediately. The right-hander will make one more camp start and is projected to pitch the third game of the season, July 26, at home against Colorado.
Jul 10 2020Kluber worked six-plus innings and threw 80 pitches in an intrasquad game Thursday, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports. He allowed two hits, did not walk a batter and struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Other than Rougned Odor catching all of a cut fastball for a home run, Kluber was on point. He retired 11 of the first 12 batters he faced and fanned seven of them in what was his second time on the mound at Globe Life Field. "He was definitely ahead of the hitters today," manager Chris Woodward said. "I felt it was his command, and the baseball was moving. The movement is really late. Honestly, I was thrilled to watch that. You see the reaction of a lot of our hitters. A lot of them had a really tough time against him." Kluber is line for two more camp outings before the regular season arrives.
Jul 5 2020Kluber tossed five innings in a simulated game Saturday, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber shouldered a heavy load during his first summer-camp session, throwing 85 pitches (55 strikes). The right-hander struggled at the beginning, according to manager Chris Woodward, but once he found his arm slot, he commanded better. During the shutdown, Kluber had pitched regularly at his home in suburban Boston (Mass.) and also made a two-week trip to Florida in early May to join private workouts with other major-league players.
May 30 2020Kluber has faced live batters and pitched the equivalent of three innings, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star Telegram reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's not clear where Kluber faced the live hitters, but he's on schedule for a resumption of spring training. Once in camp, Kluber and the rest of the Texas starters will work toward building up pitch counts to the 75-to-80 range.
Mar 7 2020Kluber allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out two over four innings in Friday's spring game against the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber worked from behind more than is typical of him, but he limited the damage and met his goal of pitching four frames. He was better this time out than in his Cactus League debut this past Sunday. He didn't allow a hit through the first three innings while working around a pair of walks. So far, the 33-year-old right-hander looks normal after missing a significant amount of time in 2019 due to a broken forearm.
Mar 2 2020Kluber allowed two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out four over three innings in Sunday's spring game against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber ran into immediate trouble, loading the bases with none out in the first inning before escaping with just one run. The veteran right-hander made his spring debut, threw all of his pitches, and eventually found his command over the final two innings. Catcher Jeff Mathis gave manager Chris Woodward a positive review. "I was talking to Math and he was like, 'balls were moving all over the place -- back-door sinker, front-door sinker, front-door cutter,'" Woodward told Dave Sessions of MLB.com. "Balls were moving all over the place and he was commanding it." Kluber did allow a home run, but that was the lone bit of hard contact off him.
Feb 16 2020Kluber (oblique) is healthy again and threw his second bullpen session Saturday, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber, who was limited to 35.2 innings in 2019 by a fractured forearm, was encouraged following the session. "I don't know if I can put a timeline on it, but you throw so many pitches and go through your delivery so many times, you know when it's right and when it's not," Kluber said. "From that aspect, I feel good where I am at." The right-hander, who turns 34 in April, is being watched closely. Not only from a health perspective, but the Rangers are also considering his workload. Kluber, a two-time Cy Young Award winner, threw 1,091.1 innings over a five-year span from 2014-18, the second most in MLB and a heavy workload for a pitcher of any age. Next up is a live batting-practice session Tuesday. Kluber's expected to have two or three such BP sessions before getting into a game.
Dec 15 2019The Indians are in agreement to trade Kluber (oblique) to the Rangers on Sunday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The trade rumors around Kluber picked up heavily this weekend, and he's now set to join Texas, though the trade is officially pending physicals. The right-hander was limited to seven games in 2019 due to forearm and oblique issues, but the Rangers are adding a two-time Cy Young Award winner who had a 2.96 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 186 games from 2013 to 2018. Kluber will earn $17.5 million next season and his $18.5 million option for 2021 will vest if he pitches 160 innings and doesn't finish the season on the injured list, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
Oct 2 2019Kluber (oblique) will have his club option picked up for the 2020 season, Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Oct 2 2019Kluber (oblique) will have his club option picked up for the 2020 season, Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The decision would have seemed like one of the easiest ones in baseball heading into the season based on how well Kluber had pitched for the last several years. His track record still likely made it mostly a formality even after forearm and oblique injuries limited him to just seven starts this season. Those injuries and the fact that Kluber will turn 34 in April do make the veteran something of a risk heading into next season, but it's a risk worth taking for Cleveland at the modest price of $17.5 million. The team will have another option for $18 million for the 2021 season.
Sep 19 2019Kluber (oblique) long-tossed from 100 feet with good intensity Thursday, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While it is good to see Kluber progressing, he won't have enough time to return to the mound this season. He will be a fascinating player for 2020 fantasy drafts, as he wasn't very good when he was healthy this year (5.80 ERA, 1.65 WHIP, 38:15 K:BB in 35.2 innings). Kluber had thrown over 200 innings in five straight seasons prior to this year.
Sep 13 2019Kluber (oblique) played catch with a team trainer Friday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kluber hasn't pitched in a big-league game since early May, first due to a fractured forearm and then after straining his oblique. It appears as though his chances of returning before the end of the regular season are quite low, but he could be able to help Cleveland in some capacity if the team reaches the playoffs.
Sep 7 2019Kluber (oblique) is still limited to aquatic exercise, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With that, Meisel says he would be "quite surprised" if Kluber pitched again before the end of the regular season. Realistically, given where Kluber is at, he's also a long shot to pitch in the postseason barring a deep run by Cleveland. Kluber suffered an oblique strain during a start with Triple-A Columbus last month while rehabbing a forearm injury which originally sidelined him in early May.
Aug 23 2019Kluber underwent additional tests on his strained oblique Friday, Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
Aug 20 2019Kluber underwent an MRI on Monday and was diagnosed with an internal oblique strain.
Aug 19 2019Kluber will likely be shut down from throwing for the next two weeks after leaving Sunday's rehab start for Triple-A Columbus due to an abdominal injury, Paul Hoynes
Aug 18 2019Kluber (forearm) was removed after the first inning of Sunday's rehab start for Double-A Akron due to abdominal tightness, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
Aug 14 2019Kluber (forearm) tossed four innings Tuesday in a rehab start for Double-A Akron, allowing one run on two hits and a walk while striking out six.
Aug 8 2019Kluber (forearm) tossed three innings Thursday in his first rehab start for Triple-A Columbus, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out two.
Aug 4 2019Kluber (forearm) is scheduled to make his first rehab start Thursday with Triple-A Columbus, Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com reports.
Aug 3 2019Kluber (forearm) will begin a minor-league rehab assignment Thursday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.

Jul 24 2018Kluber (12-6) was rocked for seven runs (three earned) on nine hits and one walk across four innings to take the loss Monday against the Pirates. He struck out two.Kluber made his first start of the second half after shaking off a knee issue, but he hardly looked like his normal self. He allowed four runs following a two-out error in the second inning and three more on four hits in the fourth. While Kluber's struggles could be attributed to a bit of rust after 11 days off and the recent knee issue, he's now allowed 18 earned runs across 26 innings in his last four starts. He still holds a shiny 2.88 ERA and will look to bounce back this weekend against the Tigers.
Jul 22 2018Kluber (knee) completed his normal pre-start bullpen session Friday without issue and will make his first start of the second half Monday against the Pirates, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.Kluber's arm slot had drifted in recent starts while he compensated for instability in his right knee, which may have contributed to the right-hander's poor showing in his last start July 12 against the Yankees (six runs allowed on eight hits and two walks over 7.1 innings). He received an injection in his knee the day after the start to correct the problem, though the treatment prevented him from taking part in the All-Star Game. With 10 days of rest between starts and the shot having provided the desired effect, Kluber should be activated with confidence as he prepares for a two-start week. His second turn is set to come Sunday in Detroit.
Jul 13 2018Kluber underwent an injection in his right knee Friday, which will force him to miss the All-Star Game. The club does not expect him to miss any additional time, as his next scheduled start will come against Pittsburgh on July 23.Kluber will be shut down for the next seven days, though there doesn't seem to be any concern over his status moving forward. The right-hander stated that his knee has been impacting his mechanics in recent starts, so he wanted to take advantage of the mini-break and come out of the gate healthy for the second half of the season. Across 20 starts this year, the Cy Young winner has logged a 2.76 ERA and 0.91 WHIP with 132 strikeouts over 133.2 innings.
Jul 12 2018Kluber (12-5) struck out nine in 7.1 innings Thursday, yielding six runs on eight hits and two walks while taking the loss against the Yankees.Brett Gardner and Didi Gregorius took him deep in the third and fourth innings, respectively. It was obviously a bad start, especially for someone with Kluber's reputation, but the nine strikeouts bring him to a 132:17 K:BB this season. He also still owns a strong 2.76 ERA and 0.91 WHIP. The 32-year-old righty will take the mound in Texas next Saturday.
Jul 7 2018Kluber didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 6-3 extra-innings loss to the A's, giving up five hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings while striking out three. The right-hander wasn't as dominant as usual when it came to strikeouts, but he was still in firm control all afternoon and left the game in line for his 13th win of the season before the Cleveland bullpen messed things up. Kluber had to settle instead for his 17th quality start of the year, and he'll carry a 2.49 ERA into his next outing Thursday at home against the Yankees.
Jul 3 2018Kluber (12-4) allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out five over six innings in a win over the Royals on Monday. He did not issue a walk.Kluber wasn't at his best -- he was behind in counts most of the night, throwing first-pitch strikes to just 11 of 25 batters faced, and also gave up a home run. That said, it was still an encouraging performance after Kluber failed to make it out of the second inning against the Cardinals last week. Even with a couple recent stumbles, Kluber is still among the top 10 in the American League in most traditional pitching categories, ranking second in wins and WHIP (0.87). He lines up to face the A's at home Sunday.
Jun 27 2018Kluber (11-4) took the loss Tuesday, allowing six runs on six hits and a walk while striking out two over 1.2 innings against the Cardinals. After enduring a nearly two hour rain delay prior to the first pitch, Kluber was out of rhythm from the get-go. He allowed a pair of home runs and set season lows by a wide margin in both innings and strikeouts. Even with the clunker Tuesday, Kluber owns terrific ratios with a 2.54 ERA and 0.86 WHIP to go along with 9.2 K/9. He'll look to bounce back next time out Monday in Kansas City.
Jun 20 2018Kluber (11-3) picked up the win in Wednesday's 12-0 rout of the White Sox, allowing only one hit and one walk over seven scoreless innings while striking out seven. He threw 65 of 96 pitches for strikes while generating 15 swinging strikes, and only that elevated pitch count kept Kluber from going after his seventh career shutout. The right-hander has delivered quality starts in an incredible 15 of 16 outings and now leads the majors with 11 wins, and he'll take a 2.10 ERA with him to the mound in his next start Tuesday in St. Louis.
Jun 16 2018Kluber (10-4) took the loss Friday, allowing four runs on four hits and a walk over five innings while striking out three as Cleveland fell 6-3 to the Twins.Klubot looked downright human in this one, walking his first batter in over a month, allowing multiple homers for the first time in seven starts and turning in his shortest outing of the season. The right-hander only threw 65 pitches, so expect Kluber to be fresh and focused when he next takes the mound Wednesday at home against the White Sox.
Jun 10 2018Kluber (10-2) surrendered two runs on five hits while striking out eight over eight innings Sunday as he picked up the win over Detroit.Kluber allowed one run in the third, and another in the sixth on a Leonys Martin solo homer, but his offense gave him more than enough run support to earn the victory. Kluber has demonstrated excellent command over his last six outings, as he hasn't issued a single walk since May 8 against Milwaukee, which is also the last time he was tagged with a loss. Through 14 starts this season, the 32-year-old has posted a 1.99 ERA and 0.83 WHIP with an outstanding 103:10 K:BB over 99.2 innings.
Jun 5 2018Kluber (9-1) tossed seven one-run innings while earning the win Tuesday against the Brewers, allowing seven hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.Kluber threw an impressive 66 percent of his pitches for strikes and induced seven groundball outs in this stifling outing. He allowed a run on three hits in the third inning, but he allowed just four baserunners combined over his other six frames and avoided issuing a walk for the fifth straight outing. It was simply the latest in a series of stellar outings for Kluber, who is now tied for the American League lead in victories and sports a 1.96 ERA.
May 30 2018Kluber (8-2) got the win Wednesday, pitching six shutout innings with 10 strikeouts, no walks and three hits allowed against the White Sox.Kluber likely could've gone another inning as his pitch count sat at 90 through six frames, but with Cleveland already ahead by nine runs there was no need to push him any further. The 32-year-old finishes May with an absurd 41:1 K:BB over 39.1 innings in the month, and hasn't allowed an earned run in three of his last four starts. He's now sporting a minuscule 2.02 ERA and 0.84 WHIP, and next lines up to take on the Brewers on Tuesday.
May 26 2018Kluber didn't factor into the decision against the Astros, scattering seven hits over 6.1 shut-out innings, striking out seven and walking none before the Indians eventually lost 11-2 to Houston on Friday.Kluber was his customarily dominant self in this contest, but the Indians ended up getting blown out as his bullpen was torched for all 11 earned runs after he exited the contest. It was unfortunate to see such a strong outing wasted, but Kluber remains one of the most dominant pitchers in the game, as he's got a stellar 2.17 ERA and a microscopic 0.86 WHIP, to go along with an elite 78:10 K:BB through 78.2 innings this season.
May 19 2018Kluber (7-2) picked up the win Saturday against the Astros, allowing two earned runs while striking out 10 batters and issuing zero walks. This was a vintage Kluber outing, using pinpoint control to strike out tough Astros batters while avoiding surrendering any free passes. What's particularly encouraging is that the strikeout volume was back. Kluber had struck out six batters just once in his previous six outings entering Saturday. His dominant outing against the Astros gives him 71 K's through 72.1 innings on the year. He's lined up to face the Astros again in his next start on May 26.
May 13 2018Kluber (6-2) allowed two runs (zero earned) on eight hits while walking none and striking out four across seven innings to earn the win Sunday against the Royals.Kluber pitched well overall, needing only 97 pitches to complete his seven innings of work. It was also the first time in his past five starts in which he didn't allow a home run. However, he generated just over a 10 percent swinging strike rate and it was his second consecutive start striking out only four batters. His velocity hasn't fallen noticeably from earlier in the season but he has an 8.4 K/9 through 65.1 innings, a relatively low mark for his career norms.
May 9 2018Kluber (5-2) allowed three runs on five hits and one walk across six innings while taking the loss Tuesday against the Brewers. He struck out four.Kluber's only real mistakes cost him in this one, including a two-run home run from Travis Shaw in the first inning and a solo shot from opposing pitcher Brent Suter in the third. Unfortunately, despite his eighth straight quality start to begin the season, Kluber lost for the first time since opening day due to a lack of runs support. He hasn't been quite as dominant of late, allowing exactly three earned runs in four straight outings and striking out more than six batters just once in that span. Still, he'll take a tidy 2.62 ERA into his next scheduled start Monday against Detroit.
May 2 2018Kluber (5-1) picked up the win Wednesday against the Rangers, allowing three runs on six hits through seven innings while striking out six.It was another typical day in the office for Kluber, who cruised to his fifth straight win thanks to another quality effort. The 32-year-old has now registered seven quality starts in as many appearances this season, which is reflected in his tidy 2.41 ERA and 0.78 WHIP. All three runs scored against Kluber came via solo homers, and he's now allowed six long balls over his previous three starts, but his continued success during that stretch (3-0 with a 3.57 ERA and 0.84 WHIP) suggests there is little cause for concern. He'll look to extend his winning streak when he takes on the Brewers on Tuesday.
Apr 28 2018Kluber (4-1) struck out 10 and walked three across 8.2 innings Friday in a win over the Mariners, giving up three runs on four hits.Kluber has thrown at least six innings while giving up three runs or fewer in all six starts. He was one out away from a complete game Friday, but was taken out at 116 pitches after giving up a single to Kyle Seager. This was the second time this season that Kluber has reached double-digit strikeouts, and now has 47 strikeouts in 45.1 innings. The next start for the right-hander will be a matchup at home against the Rangers.
Apr 22 2018Kluber (3-1) gave up three runs on six hits over seven innings in Sunday's 7-3 victory over the Orioles.Manny Machado was responsible for two of the three runs that Kluber allowed Sunday, as Machado launched two solo home runs off Cleveland's ace. Kluber's four strikeouts were a season-low, but the Indians offense gave him plenty of support and helped him record his third consecutive victory. After making five starts, Kluber now owns an elite 1.96 ERA and 0.76 WHIP. His next start figures to be Friday when the Indians host the Mariners.
Apr 18 2018Kluber got the win over the Twins on Tuesday, striking out six and walking two while giving up one run on five hits in 6.2 innings. This was Kluber's shortest outing in four starts this year, yet it was still a solid performance. The lone run he allowed was an RBI double in the seventh by Brian Dozier, who was the last batter Kluber saw for the night as Andrew Miller then came in to relieve. In four starts, Kluber has put up typical Kluber numbers, allowing just 16 hits in 29.2 innings while sporting a 33:6 K:BB ratio. The ace right-hander will next take on the Orioles in Baltimore.
Apr 15 2018Kluber's scheduled start Sunday has been postponed. He will start Tuesday in Minnesota. The weather in Cleveland has not cooperated, as Kluber was supposed to start Saturday, and has been unable to take the mound in back-to-back days. Cleveland's off day Monday will mean that Kluber goes seven days between starts. He opposes Lance Lynn in that outing.
Apr 14 2018Kluber's start Saturday against the Blue Jays was postponed due to inclement weather, so he will take the hill Sunday instead, weather permitting. The game will be made up on May 3. Kluber might be the best pitcher in the American League, sporting a 1.57 ERA with a 27:4 K:BB in 23 innings (three starts).
Apr 10 2018Kluber (1-1) allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out 13 over eight scoreless innings in a win over the Tigers on Monday. It was an absolutely dominant showing from one of the game's best. Through three starts this season, Kluber has a 27:4 K:BB (tied with Max Scherzer for the most strikeouts in baseball) and is holding opponents to a .143 batting average. Kluber was a first-round pick in most leagues during draft season, but a case can be made that he should have gone even higher than he did. He lines up for a home start against the Blue Jays this weekend.
Mar 29 2018Kluber (0-1) took the loss on Opening Day, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out eight over eight innings against the Mariners. He allowed a two-run homer to Nelson Cruz in the first inning, but after that, Kluber was Kluber. The right-hander got 14 swinging strikes on 91 pitches and induced 11 groundball outs. A road matchup against the Angels is next for Kluber, who is unanimously considered a top-four pitching option in fantasy.
Mar 23 2018Kluber was officially named the Indians' Opening Day starter, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.Kluber will take the hill against Seattle on Thursday. In 2017, the right-hander posted a 2.25 ERA and 0.87 WHIP with a 265:36 K:BB over 203.2 innings on his way to winning the American League Cy Young Award.
Mar 13 2018Kluber has notched 15 strikeouts in 8.2 innings (three starts) this spring. He has gradually built up his workload and threw 57 pitches in 3.2 innings his last time out. Kluber appears to be in midseason form, missing bats at a ridiculous clip so far in Cactus League play. He has issued two walks and given up seven hits, amounting to three earned runs (3.12 ERA). Continue treating him like a top-four starting pitcher for mixed leagues.
Oct 3 2017Kluber will start Game 2 of the ALDS against either the Twins or Yankees. The Indians will give the ball to Trevor Bauer for Game 1, lining Kluber up to pitch Game 2 and a potential Game 5 on regular rest. The ace posted a ridiculous 1.79 ERA and 142:12 K:BB in 15 starts (110.1 innings) since the All-Star break, and will look to carry his dominance into the playoffs.
Sep 30 2017Kluber allowed one run on six hits while striking out three over five innings in a no-decision against the White Sox on Saturday. He did not issue a walk. The team capped Kluber at 81 pitches in his final regular-season tuneup before the start of the ALDS. Kluber was absolutely brilliant throughout the campaign -- he's neck and neck with Boston's Chris Sale for the AL Cy Young despite missing a month early in the season with a back injury. He may be a late-first/early-second rounder in drafts next spring.
Sep 25 2017Kluber (18-4) allowed two runs (none earned) on six hits and a pair of walks to pick up the win against the Mariners on Sunday. He struck out 10.There were plenty of baserunners during the Klubot's outing, but he managed to limit the damage to just a two-run home run by Ben Gamel in the fifth inning. With another 10 K's on the ledger, the Cy Young Award winner now has an absurd 47:3 K:BB in 38 innings pitched during the month of September to go along with a 5-0 record and a 0.71 ERA. Kluber will look to finish the regular season on a high note when he makes his final start before the playoffs against the White Sox next weekend.
Sep 17 2017Kluber (17-4) picked up the win Sunday after allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out nine Royals over seven innings.Kluber, who's lost only once since July 4, allowed just three singles Sunday, and extended his scoreless streak to 22 straight innings. The Cy Young candidate lowered his ERA to 2.35 while locking in 76 of his 99 pitches for strikes, 22 of which were swings and misses. Kluber will look to match last season's 18 wins -- a career high he's managed to notch twice since 2014 -- when he takes the hill Saturday in Seattle.
Sep 12 2017Kluber (16-4) tossed a complete-game shutout Tuesday, allowing five hits and no walks while striking out eight Tigers. The Indians' ace pushed the team's winning streak to 20 games while facing just three batters over the minimum Tuesday. Over his last nine starts, Kluber is 8-1 with 74 strikeouts -- the most punch outs for any MLB pitcher since Aug. 1 -- and has arguably taken control of the AL Cy Young race. He'll carry a sparkling 2.44 ERA into Sunday's contest as home against the Royals.
Sep 7 2017Kluber (15-4) beat the White Sox on Thursday after allowing two runs on three hits with one walk and 13 strikeouts in seven innings.Kluber was staked to a 4-0 lead in top of the first inning, which was more than enough for the ace to cruise to another victory and improve to 8-1 in his past 10 starts despite allowing a pair of homers in the bottom of the frame. This result also extended Cleveland's winning streak to a franchise-best 15 consecutive games. His team's climb to within 2.5 games of Houston for the best record in the AL has strengthened Kluber's case for a second Cy Young award, with his 2.56 ERA and 12.0 K/9 reminiscent of the 2.44 and 10.3 marks he posted when he captured that honor in 2014. The 31-year-old righty will look to add to his resume in Tuesday's home matchup with a depleted Tigers offense.
Sep 3 2017Kluber (14-4) shined Saturday against the Tigers, allowing just one run on eight hits while striking out seven in eight innings of work en route to the victory. This marked the second consecutive outing in which the Klubot went eight innings and the seventh start in a row with three or fewer runs allowed. The only blemish on the evening was an RBI single in the seventh inning, but everything else about his evening was fairly low stress. Kluber's ERA now sits at a stellar 2.56 mark, a figure he'll look to improve further in his next start Thursday against the White Sox.
Aug 28 2017Kluber (13-4) allowed two runs on three hits and a walk and struck out seven over eight innings to pick up the win Monday against the Yankees.Kluber still hasn't lost in consecutive starts all season long, as he was able to follow up a tough luck loss last time out against Boston with another dominant outing against another AL East opponent. Kluber is now 5-1 over his last six starts and hasn't given up more than three runs in any of the six. His ERA is down to a pristine 2.63, buoyed by an absurd 215 strikeouts over 160.2 innings.
Aug 23 2017Kluber (12-4) suffered defeat at the hands of the Red Sox on Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk over 7.2 innings while striking out 12.He was locked in a scoreless pitcher's duel with Drew Pomeranz until the fifth inning, when Mitch Moreland smacked a solo homer and gave Boston a lead they wouldn't surrender. Kluber has now struck out double-digit batters in 13 of 22 outings this season while delivering quality starts in an incredible 17 of them, but he'll face another tough task Monday on the road against the Yankees.
Aug 21 2017Manager Terry Francona said Kluber (ankle) will be on "no restrictions" for his start Wednesday against Boston, the Associated Press reports. After a successful bullpen session Sunday, the Tribe's ace is a full-go for his showdown against the powerful Red Sox lineup. That's good news considering Kluber leads the AL with 14 complete games and five shutouts over the past four seasons. The last time he faced off against the Sox was in last year's ALDS, when Kluber allowed just three hits over seven shutout innings.
Aug 20 2017Kluber (ankle) threw a side bullpen session Sunday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. This is an encouraging development, as Kluber, who exited his last start after just 74 pitches with a sprained ankle, didn't appear to have any issues during Sunday's session. The Indians will wait and see how Kluber feels Monday before determining his status for Wednesday's start against the Red Sox.
Aug 20 2017Kluber (ankle) will make his scheduled start Wednesday against the Red Sox, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.Kluber felt great following Sunday's bullpen session and is ready to take the mound when Cleveland faces Boston on Wednesday. Kluber has been terrific this season, and the month of August has been no exception. Since the start of the month he's made four starts, during which he's picked up four wins and posted a 1.78 ERA and 0.66 WHIP.
Aug 18 2017Kluber (12-3) tossed 5.1 innings and allowed one run on six hits and a walk to earn the win Friday night but was forced to leave after just 74 pitches with a sprained ankle, MLB.com reports.Kluber was on a roll and probably could have completed at least the sixth inning if not for the injury. He came off the mound awkwardly covering first base on a ground ball and was favoring the leg. Kluber stayed in for one more batter but was removed after giving up a single. Seeing as he didn't need to leave the game immediately, the injury may not be a major one. Consider Kluber day-to-day until the Cleveland training staff can evaluate him further.
Aug 13 2017Kluber (11-3) allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out nine over seven innings to earn the win over Tampa Bay on Sunday.Kluber wasn't as dominant Sunday as he's been in recent outings, but the 31-year-old still managed to toss a quality start and earn his third straight win. He also managed to rack up more than eight strikeouts for a ridiculous 14th consecutive start. Cleveland's ace has dazzled since coming off the disabled list at the beginning of June, compiling an 8-1 record with a shiny 1.85 ERA and 151:17 K:BB across 14 starts (102.1 innings). He'll look to keep things rolling against the Royals on Friday.
Aug 8 2017Kluber (10-3) notched a complete-game victory Tuesday, allowing just one run on three hits and no walks while striking out 11 Rockies. The Tribe's ace continued his run of absolute dominance with Tuesday's effort, his 13th straight start with eight-plus punch outs. Despite missing a month of action due to a back injury, Kluber ranks fourth in MLB with 172 strikeouts over his 132.2 innings. Since returning from the DL, the 31-year-old is 7-1 with a 1.70 ERA in 13 starts. Kluber is as dominant right now as he was in 2014 when he won the AL Cy Young. Next up on the right-hander's agenda is a date in Tampa Bay on Sunday afternoon.
Aug 3 2017Kluber (9-3) was masterful in Thursday's complete game win over the Yankees, allowing just one run on three hits with one walk and 11 strikeouts.Kluber spoiled Sonny Gray's New York debut by going a full nine innings for the third time this season while racking up double-digit strikeouts for the ninth time in his last 10 starts. His numbers in that stretch have been Cy Young worthy, as the 2014 winner of the award has posted a 1.70 ERA and 113:12 K:BB over 74.1 innings. Kluber's only blemish in this one was a seventh-inning homer by Gary Sanchez. The right-hander faces another potent lineup next with the Rockies in town Tuesday, but there's no such thing as a bad matchup for Kluber given his recent form.
Aug 2 2017Kluber will keep his Thursday start against New York, despite Wednesday's postponed game against Boston, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.Trevor Bauer was in line for Wednesday's start, but he will now be bumped in order to keep Kluber on schedule. The Tribe's ace has been on an absolute tear in recent weeks, and he'll look to keep that going when he squares of with new Yankee Sonny Gray in Cleveland on Thursday night.
Aug 1 2017In five July starts, Kluber went 1-1 with a 2.62 ERA and 56 strikeouts over 34.1 innings. After setting a career-best mark with a 13.4 K/9 in June, Kluber topped that with a 14.7 K/9 in July. Saying the right-hander is on fire wouldn't do him justice. Over his last 11 starts, opponents are slashing just .177/.224/.275 over 292 plate appearances. Furthermore, batters have connected for hard contact just 22.4 percent of the time, the lowest percentage for any pitcher during that period. If not for a back injury that sidelined Kluber for all but three innings in May, he'd be neck and neck with Boston's Chris Sale in the AL Cy Young race.
Jul 29 2017Kluber allowed four runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out 12 batters over 6.1 innings during Saturday's win over the White Sox. He didn't factor into the decision.Since returning from the disabled list June 1, Kluber has recorded 120 strikeouts through just 77.1 innings. He boasts an elite 2.90 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 12.6 K/9 for the campaign, and is a true matchup-proof hurler in all fantasy formats. Kluber projects to face the Yankees at Progressive Field in his next start.
Jul 23 2017Kluber (neck) will start Sunday's game against the Blue Jays. The Indians pushed Kluber back a couple of days in the schedule due to a stiff neck, but after completing his pre-start bullpen session early this week without incident, the right-hander will be cleared to take the bump in the series finale. Kluber has been dealing since the start of May, turning in nine consecutive quality starts and submitting a 1.56 ERA, 0.73 WHIP and 94:11 K:BB over 63.1 innings during that span.
Jul 23 2017Kluber (8-3) struck out 14 Blue Jays over seven one-run innings Sunday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks.Kluber continued his recent run of dominance in this one, throwing 81 of his 120 pitches for strikes, including a whopping 23 in swinging fashion. He allowed just one man past second base and was only breached by a solo home run from Kevin Pillar to lead off the third inning. Kluber has now gone at least seven innings while recording double-digit strikeouts in seven of his last eight starts, posting an excellent 90:10 K:BB during that stretch. His season ERA now sits at a sterling 2.74 and he will look to keep it rolling Friday against the White Sox.
Jul 21 2017Kluber (neck) is listed as the probable starter for Sunday's matinee tilt with the Blue Jays.Kluber has been dealing with a stiff neck over his past few starts and was already bumped from his previously-scheduled appearance Friday, but it appears he'll still make an outing this week, barring any setbacks. The right-hander owns an outstanding 2.86 ERA and 0.96 WHIP over 15 starts this season and ranks ninth in the majors with 135 strikeouts.
Jul 19 2017Kluber could make his next start Sunday against the Blue Jays depending on the neck discomfort that has been plaguing him in recent days, MLB.com's Jordan Bastian reports. While Kluber deals with a stiff neck, the Indians chose to skip his scheduled start for Friday's game and bump Trevor Bauer and Danny Salazar (shoulder) up a day. Kluber should be considered day-to-day, with the club releasing more information on his availability over the next couple days. In the event that Kluber is unable to make Sunday's start, Josh Tomlin would pick up the slack for the series finale.
Jul 18 2017Kluber has recently been dealing with a stiff neck, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.Kluber is reportedly dealing with some neck issues, though you wouldn't know it by watching him pitch. The ace has been on a brilliant run of late but may have to have his upcoming start bumped back or skipped all-together if the discomfort in his neck fails to subside. Kluber will be considered day-to-day as the Indians head into their weekend series against the Blue Jays.
Jul 15 2017Kluber allowed three earned runs on five hits over 7.1 innings in Saturday's loss to the A's, recording 12 strikeouts and zero walks in the process. The Cleveland ace was victimized by the unlikely hitting of rookie Matt Chapman, who scored all three runs against Kluber, including a game-tying solo home run in the eighth inning. Regardless, the right-hander was able to cruise through the rest of the outing relatively unscathed while bringing his season strikeout total to a lofty 135, good for third in the American League. The three earned runs was the most Kluber has allowed since June 9, which only speaks to his dominance over that stretch, as he has posted double-digit strikeouts six times in seven starts.
Jul 9 2017Kluber allowed one run on three hits while striking out eight over five innings of a no-decision Sunday against the Tigers. He also walked three.Kluber's run of double-digit strikeouts is officially over, as he failed to fan 10 or more batters for the first time in six starts. His early departure was likely due to a high pitch count (101, 40 of which were balls), and had he had better command of the zone, odds are he would have racked up a couple additional K's. Nevertheless, Kluber will bring a 7-3 record, 0.99 WHIP and 2.80 ERA with him to the All-Star Game in Miami this week.
Jul 5 2017Kluber was named the AL Pitcher of the Month after going 4-0 with 64 strikeouts over 43 innings in June.Jordan Bastian of MLB.com points out that Kluber joined Sam McDowell and Bob Feller as the only pitchers in Indians history with 64 or more strikeouts in one month. The Tribe's ace recently moved into the organizations top-10 for career strikeouts while becoming the first pitcher in franchise history to have 10-plus punch outs in five straight starts. Despite missing a month due to a back injury, Kluber's 115 strikeouts are fourth-best in the AL, and the righty's 2.85 ERA and 0.97 WHIP place fourth and second, respectively, in the league. He looks primed for a strong second half to say the least.
Jul 4 2017Kluber (7-3) allowed only one run on five hits and a walk while striking out 10 over eight innings in Tuesday's 1-0 loss to the Padres. The right-hander set a new Cleveland franchise record with his fifth straight double-digit strikeout start, breaking the mark of four straight held by Bob Feller since 1939. Kluber also became the seventh right-hander since the deadball era to accomplish the feat, joining an illustrious group of fireballers alongside Nolan Ryan, J.R. Richard, Dwight Gooden, Pedro Martinez, Curt Schilling and Max Scherzer. Kluber will get one more start before the All-Star break Sunday at home against the Tigers.
Jun 29 2017Kluber gave up one run on three hits and one walk while striking out 12 over eight innings in Thursday's win over the Rangers. The 31-year-old closed out the month of June with another dominant performance -- his fourth straight double-digit strikeout game. Kluber has been on an incredible run since returning from a month-long absence due to a back issue, posting a 1.26 ERA over six starts. After a somewhat disappointing first month (4.19 ERA in April), Kluber has put himself firmly back among the elite. In fact, this may be the best version of Kluber we've seen yet.
Jun 24 2017Kluber (6-2) allowed two unearned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out 13 across seven innings, but received no decision Saturday against the Twins.Kluber was the victim of limited run support, which likely kept him from earning his seventh win of the season. He's allowed just five earned runs over his last five starts to lower a 5.06 ERA to 3.24, and he's now looking like the fantasy ace he was drafted to be. He'll make his next start Thursday against the Rangers.
Jun 19 2017Kluber (6-2) struck out 11 while allowing three hits and no walks in a complete game shutout Monday against the Orioles.Kluber was outstanding in this one, throwing first-pitch strikes to 21 of the 30 hitters he faced while notching a season high in punchouts. He was in the strike zone at 74 percent clip and induced 12 groundball outs while not allowing a single runner past first base. The right-hander endured his share of struggles prior to a month-long injury absence, but he has posted a sharp 1.61 ERA and a stellar 39:4 K:BB to go along with a 3-0 record in four starts since returning to the rotation. Kluber is in tremendous form at the present time and will look to keep it rolling Saturday against the Twins.
Jun 14 2017Kluber struck out 10 over seven strong innings against the Dodgers on Wednesday, allowing just two runs on four hits and a walk. He didn't factor into the decision in the eventual 6-4 loss.Kluber has now put up three 10-strikeout games in his last five starts, albeit with a month-long DL stint in the middle there. His ERA is still an inflated 4.15, but the smart money's on Kluber bringing that number down to a more respectable level.
Jun 10 2017Kluber (5-2) allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings Friday against the White Sox, striking out eight and walking two.In his second start since a nearly month-long disabled list stint (back) that cost him almost all of May, Kluber didn't quite match the six shutout innings he fired June 1, but still had himself a nice night. While this start came on an abnormal seven days rest, he now has a 18:3 K:BB since his return.
Jun 1 2017Kluber (4-2) pitched six scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts during Thursday's win over Oakland. He allowed just two hits and a walk.Considering Kluber last toed the rubber May 2, this was an impressive outing and silences any injury concerns. The outing dropped him to a 4.36 ERA and 1.25 WHIP, and the righty sports an elite 10.6 K.9. Unfortunately, he lines up for a difficult upcoming start against the Rockies at Coors Field, so it could be difficult to followup Thursday's solid showing.
Jun 1 2017Kluber (back) was activated from the 10-day DL in advance of his scheduled start Thursday against the Athletics.Manager Terry Francona confirmed to media Monday that Kluber will take the hill for this start, which becomes official with Thursday's roster move. The right-hander was lights out in his rehab start Friday for Double-A Akron, throwing five shutout innings of one-hit ball to prove he's ready to return. Kluber, who posted a 5.06 ERA across six starts before landing on the DL, will square off against Jharel Cotton and the As in a home matchup.
May 28 2017Manager Terry Francona relayed that Kluber (back) would start Thursday's game against the Athletics, Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.Kluber looked sharp in his rehab outing Friday for Double-A Akron, tossing five scoreless innings while giving up one hit and issuing no walks. The outing evidently convinced the organization that Kluber would be ready to make his next turn in the big leagues, so he'll be called upon to rejoin the rotation for the final game of the Tribe's homestand. The struggling Danny Salazar will temporarily move to the bullpen this week with Kluber returning, but over the long haul, either Mike Clevinger or Josh Tomlin would seem most at risk of losing his respective starting role.
May 27 2017Kluber (back) is expected to start Thursday against the A's,Zack Meisel of Cleveland.com reports.Kluber's recent dominant rehab start showed the Indians that he's ready to return to the big league club. He's been on the shelf since early-May due to some back stiffness, but he's progressed well in his rehab and is lined up to start Thursday. Prior to landing on the DL, Kluber had been a bit shaky with a 5.06 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP in six starts.
May 26 2017Kluber (back) had his scheduled rehab start for Triple-A Columbus rained out Thursday, and he'll instead pitch Friday for Double-A Akron, Zack Meisel of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.Cleveland wanted Kluber to throw around 75 pitches in what's expected to be his final rehab appearance, but the club feared he'd have to settle for an abbreviated outing and fall short of the required workload. As long as his practice outing goes well, the right-hander could return as early as a May 31 home clash with the Athletics.
May 26 2017Kluber (back) allowed just one hit over five shutout innings in a rehab start Friday for Double-A Akron, Brad Bournival of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports.Kluber retired the final 13 batters he faced and needed just 47 pitches to complete five frames. He was so efficient that he needed to head to the bullpen to throw more pitches to ensure he is stretched out by the time he reports to the major league club. Kluber could return as soon as May 31 against Oakland.
May 22 2017Kluber (back) will head out on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Columbus on Thursday, MLB.com reports.Kluber is expected to throw 70 to 75 pitches in his first start for Columbus, and how he feels after that will determine his path going forward. If all goes well, look for Kluber to make a return to Cleveland's rotation in the first week of June.
May 21 2017Kluber (back) tossed a three-inning simulated game Saturday and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Monday, Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com reports. Barring any setbacks, he will partake in a rehab game Thursday.Kluber has been on the shelf since May 3, but it sounds like if everything goes according to plan during his upcoming bullpen session and minor-league rehab appearance that Kluber could be ready to return to the Indians' rotation by the end of May. A subsequent update on his condition should become available following his upcoming activities.
May 18 2017Kluber (back) threw a bullpen session Wednesday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.Kluber's threw 40 pitches without any hindrance Wednesday. He'll have a couple days of rest before throwing a simulated game Saturday. Kluber has steadily increased his amount of throwing activity over the past week, so a timeframe for his return should become clear in the near future.
May 15 2017Kluber (back) will throw off a mound Monday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. This is a sign of progress for the former Cy Young award winner, although he's only expected to throw 20 pitches or so. This means Kluber is still a ways away from a return to the rotation (or a rehab assignment for that matter), although the Indians' plans for him moving forward should become clearer as he ramps up his activity.
May 13 2017Kluber (back) has resumed throwing, but remains without a timetable for returning to MLB action, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.Prior to Friday's game against Minnesota, Tribe manager Terry Francona said that Kluber had begun playing catch on flat ground. The skipper added that the team will have a better idea of when Kluber will return once he's cleared to throw off a mound. "He's making some really good strides," Francona said. "We're pleased about that."
May 10 2017Kluber (back) will not return from the 10-day disabled list Sunday, the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Paul Hoynes reports. That was the day Kluber was thought to come back, but it is clear now he will not be ready to do so. The next step for Kluber will be getting back on track to a traditional five-day starter's schedule.
May 9 2017Kluber (back) headed back to Cleveland on Monday to continue rehabbing as he isn't ready to begin his five-day schedule yet, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. While the Indians were hopeful Kluber would be able to rejoin the rotation once eligible, it appears he's slightly behind schedule. He's headed back to Cleveland to do some one-on-one work with a physical therapist, and manager Terry Francona said they will regroup when the team returns from its series in Toronto on Friday, so more should be known then. Mike Clevinger, who started in place of Kluber last Sunday, would likely fill in for Kluber Saturday against the Twins.
May 6 2017Kluber (back) will be reevaluated Monday in Toronto before the team determines how long he'll remain out, Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com reports. The Indians want to see what the ace can and can't do before announcing a timeline for his return. Although the details are vague, Hoynes' report suggests Kluber will get a light workout in before Monday's game at the Rogers Centre. If all goes well, Kluber could be ready to get back on the hill Thursday in Houston.
May 3 2017Kluber (back) has been battling issues for a few starts and may land on the 10-day disabled list to fully recover, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. After Tuesday's start, one in which Kluber was removed early due to back tightness, manager Terry Francona noted that the team's ace has been dealing with the ailment for a while now. Furthermore, the skipper said Kluber would be re-evaluated Wednesday to determine if the right-hander would need to be placed on the DL. With the new 10-day rule, he'd only miss one start if he did in fact need just a short stint to heal.
May 3 2017Kluber (back) was placed on the 10-day DL on Wednesday, the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Paul Hoynes reports. He has been battling a stiff lower back, and was placed on the DL, as expected. The soonest he could return to the rotation would be May 13 against the Twins. Reliever Joe Colon was recalled as a corresponding move, but Mike Clevinger, who pitched Tuesday (the same night as Kluber) for Triple-A Columbus, is the most logical choice to step into the rotation for Sunday's start.
May 2 2017Kluber exited Tuesday's game against the Tigers early with lower back discomfort, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.Kluber was getting bludgeoned by Tigers hitters prior to his early departure Tuesday. Through three innings, the Indians' ace had allowed five earned runs on seven hits, one walk and four strikeouts. Kluber was plagued by back discomfort earlier this season, so it's possible that a trip to the DL is coming in order to give the 31-year-old ample time to heal. Through six starts, Kluber's ERA is now sitting at 5.06. He'll be listed as day-to-day until a more official injury diagnosis emerges.
Apr 28 2017Kluber (3-1) dished seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out 10 Astros in Thursday's win.Houston didn't shy away from Kluber early, plating three runs on seven hits before the right-hander could escape the third inning. However, Kluber settled in and held the Tribe's division rival scoreless over his last four frames. Through five starts, the ace owns an uncharacteristically high 3.2 BB/9, while at the same time posting admirable strikeout ratios (9.7 K/9). Kluber will take on the Tigers in his next start Tuesday.
Apr 22 2017Kluber (2-1) scattered three hits and two walks while striking out nine in a complete-game shutout of the White Sox on Friday.Chicago hitters were overmatched all night, as Kluber faced just two batters over the minimum thanks to two double plays and didn't allow a White Sox runner to even reach second base. After a couple of shaky outings to begin the campaign, the 31-year-old ace now appears to be back in his usual, dominant form. His next start will come Thursday at home against the Astros.
Apr 19 2017Due to Wednesday's matchup with the Twins being postponed, Kluber will have his next start pushed back to Friday against the White Sox, Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com reports.Owners should never be tempted to sit an ace like Kluber, but the rescheduled matchup certainly isn't as friendly for the right-hander. The 31-year-old's splits against the Twins lineup are noticeably better than his numbers against the White Sox. Furthermore, the South Siders have been a tougher out than the guys from the Twin Cities so far in 2017. That said, Kluber is one of those special "set it and forget it" players, so deploy the former Cy Young with confidence.
Apr 15 2017Kluber (1-1) allowed six runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out eight over 6.1 innings to earn the win Saturday against the Tigers.Although Kluber had little success holding down the Tigers bats, he was spotted to an early seven-run lead, and at least his fantasy owners came away from this contest with a win. He's now allowed at least five runs in two of his three starts to begin the year, but there's no reason to think that the Indians ace won't be able to quickly settle into a groove and turn things around. He'll make his next start Wednesday against the Twins.
Apr 9 2017Kluber (0-1) was effective, but took the loss Sunday after allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out four against Arizona. The All-Star was cruising early, but ran into trouble in the fourth inning. After recording two quick outs, Kluber allowed three straight singles that led to a pair of runs, one of which was the result of catcher Yan Gomes' throwing error. Kluber also surrendered a solo home run in the sixth, his fourth long ball given up over 12 innings this season. He'll look to get on track and capture his first win of 2017 when he takes the hill for his next start Saturday versus Detroit.
Apr 9 2017Kluber (0-1) was effective but took the loss Sunday after allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out four against Arizona. The All-Star was cruising early but ran into trouble in the fourth inning. Kluber also surrendered a solo home run in the sixth, his fourth long ball given up over 12 innings this season. Apr 4 2017Kluber will have the blister removed from his finger in the coming days, Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com reports. While it was reported that Kluber was dealing with blisters on Opening Day, Cleveland's pitching coach said that Kluber will be good to go for his next start Sunday against the Diamondbacks. The discomfort brought on by the blisters seemed to impede on his ability to throw in Monday's game, as he gave up five runs over the course of six innings.
Apr 3 2017Kluber said a callus ripped on one of his fingers during his rough Opening Day start, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.Kluber said the blister made it difficult for him to spin the ball, and it showed in the start, in which he allowed five runs on six hits over six innings. The humidity in Texas didn't help things for Kluber. At this point, it doesn't appear that Kluber will miss any time to the injury, but considering the club's next series is in similarly humid Arizona, it's a situation worth watching in the season's early weeks. We'll keep an eye out for updates, but assume he'll make his next start as expected.
Apr 3 2017Kluber threw six innings, allowing five runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three in a no-decision against the Rangers on Monday night.Cleveland's ace just wasn't on in this one, as he allowed three home runs. In his defense, he was facing a very strong lineup on the road in a hitter-friendly environment. Expect the Indians ace to bounce back in his next outing.
Mar 12 2017Kluber tossed four innings, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out four Padres on Sunday. After a clunker in his Cactus League debut, Kluber appeared in midseason form Sunday as he faced just one batter over the minimum through four frames. The Indians' ace came out for the fifth, but was removed after giving up two singles and an RBI double. Kluber will continue fine tuning his mechanics as he gears up to make his third straight Opening Day start for the Tribe.
Mar 7 2017Kluber was rocked over 2.1 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four Brewers in Monday's exhibition game against the Brewers. The Indians' ace was scheduled to go three innings in his spring debut, but Kluber was pulled after dealing 60 pitches before hitting the intended finish line. Pitching coach Mickey Callaway said, "He [Kluber] was a little rusty with the two-seamer. He didn't know where to start it. He was leaving pitches up at times, but his breaking ball was really good. There was lot of swing and miss at it and that's what we're looking for at this time of year." Kluber will be used judiciously throughout the Cactus League schedule as the team wants to limit his innings, but owners can expect a much more polished outing the next time he takes the hill.
Mar 1 2017Kluber completed a one-inning simulated game on Sunday with no issues, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.Kluber is slated to make his Cactus League debut on March 6. His delayed start is a planned approach to reduce his arm's exposure during spring training, and there is no injury concern regarding the 2014 AL Cy Young Award winner. Last season, Kluber finished among the AL's top-5 in wins (18), innings (215), strike outs (227), ERA (3.14) and WHIP (1.06). Needless to say, the Indians' ace is a beast and owners can move forward with drafting him with full confidence for 2017.
Feb 23 2017Kluber said he's planning to take the mound on Opening Day, though manager Terry Francona said if Kluber isn't ready, the Indians might delay his debut, Chris Assenheimer of the Chronicle-Telegram reports.Kluber isn't injured, but Cleveland wants to limit him this spring considering the right-hander has logged more than 700 innings in the last three years, including the postseason. Perhaps he'll miss a handful of starts during the season even if healthy, though despite concerns over his recent workloads, he's still one of fantasy's best starting pitchers.
Feb 19 2017Kluber, who will be on a strict limit this spring, may not be ready to start on Opening Day, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports.Manager Terry Francona isn't ready to name his ace the Opening Day starter, and said the club is "slowing" the right-hander down early in camp. "If he's not ready for Game 1, we can adjust," Francona added. Although it's unclear how serious Francona is -- and it's extremely hard to imagine Kluber won't take the hill on Opening Day -- it's not difficult to read between the lines on the manager's message. Playoffs included, Kluber has logged more than 700 innings over the last three years, and Francona is making it clear that he'll protect Kluber's arm this season. He's still an elite fantasy option, but his value could take a slight hit if Kluber won't be guaranteed another 215-plus innings and multiple opportunities to notch complete games (he's had 10 over the last three years).
Feb 13 2017Kluber is expected to have some limits on his pitch count during the beginning of spring training, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. The former Cy Young Award winner was one of the few healthy starters for Cleveland during their postseason run, which led to a heavy workload throughout the playoffs. The Indians seem content to ease Kluber into action this spring, which should hopefully allow him to hit the ground running when the regular season rolls around and continue to log a lot of innings as one of Cleveland's top starters.
Oct 26 2016Kluber will start Game 4 of the World Series on short rest, ESPN's Jayson Stark reports. He was masterful in Game 1 and only needed 88 pitches to get through six scoreless frames. The fact that the Indians were able to get their ace out of Tuesday's game at such a modest pitch count may have prompted the decision to bring him back to start Saturday in Wrigley Field on short rest. This also means that Trevor Bauer and Josh Tomlin will line up to pitch Game 5 and Game 6, respectively, on short rest.
Oct 24 2016Kluber is scheduled to start Game 1 of the World Series against the Cubs on Tuesday, ESPN reports.Just as he did in the ALCS, Cleveland's ace will head to the mound to kick off their World Series matchup versus Chicago. Kluber will face off against Cubs left-hander Jon Lester in the series opener, with Trevor Bauer and Josh Tomlin expected to follow.
Oct 17 2016Kluber will now start Game 4 of the ALCS on Tuesday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports reports.Kluber was originally scheduled to start Game 5, but manager Terry Francona had hinted that could change if Trevor Bauer ran into trouble Monday. That indeed was the case, as Bauer only lasted four batters after aggravating a preexisting laceration on his throwing hand. Kluber will now pitch Tuesday on short rest for the first time in his career.
Oct 17 2016Manager Terry Francona said that Kluber is scheduled to start Game 5 of the ALCS, but he could be bumped up to Game 4 on Tuesday if Trevor Bauer runs into trouble Monday night, Buster Olney of ESPN reports.Should things go as planned during Monday's contest, Ryan Merritt would take the ball for Tuesday's tilt. However, Francona insisted that Merritt would be available out of the bullpen if Bauer's outing was cut short, which would put the Cleveland ace in a position to start Tuesday on short rest. This doesn't change Kluber's outlook all that much, as both games will take place at the Rogers Centre. That being said, if Merritt is able to take the ball for Game 4 and the Indians completed a sweep of the Blue Jays, Kluber would then be lined up to toe the rubber for Game 1 of the World Series. Things should become clear following Monday's contest.
Oct 12 2016Kluber will start Game 1 of the ALCS against the Blue Jays on Friday, Barry Davis of Sportsnet reports.Kluber was outstanding in his first start this postseason, stifling the Red Sox over seven scoreless innings while punching out seven of them. This led manager Terry Francona to give the ball to his stud pitcher for the ALCS opener, where he'll go head-to-head with Toronto starter Marco Estrada.
Oct 7 2016Kluber (quad) will start Game 2 of the ALDS against the Red Sox on Friday.Kluber had already been tabbed to get the ball Friday, but there remained still a slight possibility that the mild quad strain that held him out of his final regular season start could resurface, but it looks like he's good to go. He'll square off against southpaw David Price in Game 2.
Oct 1 2016Kluber will start Game 2 of the ALDS on Friday. He still needs to get through a bullpen session Sunday, but it sounds like there's little-to-no real doubt about Kluber's availability for the Division Series. Trevor Bauer, whom the team thinks is better suited to handle a possible Game 4 assignment on short rest, will start the series opener on Thursday.
Oct 1 2016Kluber (quad) will throw a bullpen session Sunday, Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.A mild quad strain cut short what was a Cy Young-caliber 2016 regular season for Kluber, but he he appears to be progressing as expected. He played catch on flat ground Friday at 150 feet and if he makes it through an extended bullpen unscathed, Kluber would be on track to start Game 1 or 2 of the ALDS on Thursday or Friday.
Sep 27 2016Kluber's MRI Tuesday revealed a mild quad strain and he will return to game action in 7-to-10 days, ruling him out for the rest of the regular season. This means Kluber won't return until Game 1 or Game 2 of the ALDS, meaning owners in single-season leagues can cut bait. The Indians are going with bullpen games in their next two, with Trevor Bauer starting Saturday and Josh Tomlin starting either Friday or Sunday, so there's very little fantasy value left to extract from the Indians rotation in 2016.
Sep 27 2016Kluber (groin) will have an MRI Tuesday, but the Indians don't expect him to miss much time, if any, MLB Network Radio reports. He left Monday's start early with what has been labeled a minor groin issue, but more information should be available later Tuesday or Wednesday morning. The Indians don't seem to think the injury is serious, but there is little reason for them to rush him back this weekend, as they have already clinched the division.
Sep 26 2016Kluber exited Monday's game after just four innings and 60 pitches with right groin tightness. It's unclear whether Kluber will miss any time with this injury. He's a Cy Young contender and the rock of Cleveland's staff, so expect him to do everything he can to be ready for the playoffs, but his regular season status is definitely in jeopardy.
Sep 26 2016Kluber was removed after four innings with groin tightness Monday against the Tigers, having allowed two runs on five hits, a walk, and three strikeouts.Manager Terry Francona seemed to indicate that the groin was a minor issue and that the early exit was precautionary, saying of Kluber, "He's good, but he has a groin thing that he's fighting." The Indians went on to defeat the Tigers 7-4, and they clinched the AL Central in the process. The combination of the injury and the fact that the Indians will have little to play for in the final games of the regular season would seem to make it unlikely that Kluber would make another regular season start, although the Indians have not yet said anything about whether or not he will miss a start.
Sep 21 2016Kluber (18-9) tossed 6.1 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out nine Royals in Wednesday's win.Wednesday marked the 14th straight start in which Kluber pitched at least six innings, a ridiculous stretch in which he's gone 10-1 and thrust himself into the Cy Young conversation. The 30-year-old ranks in the AL's top five for wins, innings pitched, strikeouts, ERA and WHIP. Kluber will continue his campaign when he travels to Detroit for his next start Monday.
Sep 17 2016Kluber (17-9) gave up four earned runs on five hits and three walks over seven innings in Friday's 11-4 victory over the Tigers. He struck out seven. The former Cy Young winner turned in one of his typical workhorse performances, firing 101 pitches over his seven frames and notching 15 swinging strikes overall. Justin Upton was the source of all of Kluber's problems on the night, as he touched him up for a 436-foot solo shot in the second and a three-run blast in the sixth that plated Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez, closing the Indians' lead to 6-4 at that point. Kluber now has gone at least six innings in 13 straight starts, bringing his ERA down from 3.61 to 3.12 over that span. He's notched victories in nine of 10 decisions during that stretch as well, and will look to make it 10 of 11 when he takes on the Royals next Thursday.
Sep 6 2016Kluber (15-9) allowed four runs on four hits over seven innings in a losing effort against the Astros Tuesday. He struck out nine and walked three.Aside from Kluber's second inning, in which he issued two walks followed by a three-run homer to first baseman Marwin Gonzalez, this was a respectable showing largely in line with his strong August. He struck out nine and retired the final 10 batters he faced before exiting the game in the seventh. It marked the first time the Cleveland ace has allowed more than four runs in a start since July 3. His next start comes against Minnesota on September 11.
Sep 2 2016Kluber will make his next start Tuesday against the Astros, Zack Meisel of Cleveland.com reports.Pitching Tuesday means Kluber will get an extra day of rest between starts, but that also will line him up to pitch during a key series with the Tigers later this month. The Indians have not announced a starter for Monday's game, but are tentatively planning to use several relievers to get through that day's contest.
Aug 31 2016Kluber (15-8) struck out 11 while allowing three runs on six hits and a pair of walks in Wednesday's win over the Twins.Incredibly, despite now being third in the American league in strikeouts with 189, Kluber has only recorded double-digit whiffs twice this year, with the last time having come way back on April 23. The 30-year-old righty's now pitched at least six innings in 10 consecutive starts -- over those 69.1 innings, he owns a 1.94 ERA and 75:19 K:BB. He already won a Cy Young in 2014, and it's looking like he's going to be right in the thick of it for a repeat.
Aug 22 2016Kluber (13-8) pitched 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and four walks while striking out eight in Sunday's no-decision versus the Blue Jays.Kluber's streak of four straight wins ended Sunday when he was outdueled by Jays' starter Marcus Stroman. The Indians' ace was actually in line for the loss when he left, but a comeback victory saved Kluber from losing for the first time since June 2. The former Cy Young winner has been fantastic since the All-Star break, going 4-0 with a 1.89 ERA and 49 strikeouts over 47.2 innings.
Aug 17 2016Kluber (13-8) pitched six innings Tuesday, while allowing one run on seven hits and two walks, striking out seven to earn the win over the White Sox.Kluber's lone blemish was a solo home run by veteran DH Justin Morneau in the sixth, but he was superb the rest of the night. Kluber now has 163 strikeouts, fourth best in the AL, to go along with just 38 walks. The former Cy Young winner has been on fire of late, and has now won four consecutive starts, to go along with a 1.65 ERA over his previous seven. He'll look to keep things going against the Blue Jays on Sunday.
Aug 11 2016Kluber (12-8) gave up three runs over six innings while striking out three and walking two during Thursday's win over Los Angeles. This was Kluber's third win in as many games, although it's his shortest outing since July 3. The former Cy Young winner's K/9 has dropped for three consecutive seasons, but that hasn't been a problem as Kluber's 3.27 ERA ranks among the top-25 in MLB.
Aug 7 2016Kluber (11-8) gave up two earned runs on five hits and a walk over eight innings in Saturday's 5-2 victory over the Yankees. He struck out eight. The veteran right-hander settled down after faltering early, turning in a typically efficient performance on the way to his 11th victory. Kluber was efficient following a second inning in which he gave up an RBI double to Gary Sanchez and then allowed the Yankees backstop to score on a wild pitch. He threw 67 of 100 pitches for strikes and missed plenty of bats, notching 15 swings and misses. The 30-year-old has now rattled off three straight wins, giving up only five earned runs over the 22 innings encompassing those appearances. Kluber will look to make it four in a row when he faces the Angels next Friday.
Aug 1 2016Kluber (10-8) scattered five hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings Sunday while striking out seven to get the win over the A's.The closest Oakland came to getting a run home came in the seventh inning as they had runners on second and third with one out, but Kluber calmly got Max Muncy to pop up before Ryon Healy flied out to end the threat. The Cleveland right-hander put together his second straight strong month in July, posting a 2.51 ERA and 35:10 K:BB in 32.1 innings across five starts, and Kluber will look to carry that momentum forward into August when he makes a road start against the Yankees on Friday.
Jul 25 2016Kluber (9-8) gave up three runs on six hits and a walk over seven innings Sunday while striking out eight but came away with a no-decision in a 5-3 loss to the Orioles. He was in line for the loss before Cleveland scored a run in eighth inning to tie it, only for Cody Allen to serve up a walkoff homer in the bottom of the ninth. Kluber showed no ill effects from his calf cramping that ended his last start, throwing 67 of 101 pitches for strikes and generating an impressive 20 swinging strikes. He should be safe to use next Sunday when the Indians host the A's.
Jul 24 2016Kluber (calf) is listed in the lineup as the Indians' starting pitcher Sunday against the Orioles, MLB.com's Jordan Bastian reports.Kluber exited his previous start on July 18 with cramping in his right calf, but he was never in serious peril of missing his next turn in the rotation because of it. He should face no pitch limits in Sunday's outing, though he'll make for a risky DFS pick due to the matchup with the majors' fifth-best offense, in terms of wRC+.
Jul 18 2016Kluber pitched seven innings before leaving Monday's game against the Royals with a right calf cramp, https://twitter.com/MLBastian/status/755233280421687297">Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.Kluber was pitching solidly before sustaining the injury, giving up five hits and three walks, with eight strikeouts. His injury is not considered serious, so he'll likely be ready for his next start.
Jul 9 2016Kluber (9-8) struck out eight while giving up just one earned run on five hits over eight innings in Friday's 10-2 victory over the Yankees. The former Cy Young winner was masterful while frustrating the Yankees over his eight innings, firing 68 of his 96 pitches for strikes. Kluber had been blasted for five earned runs in just over three innings in his last start against the Blue Jays, so Friday's outing was a welcome return to form. It was Kluber's third quality start in the last four trips to the mound, and he's now secured victories in five of his last seven starts.
Jul 3 2016Kluber (8-8) lasted just 3.1 innings in Sunday's loss to the Jays, coughing up five runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out four.It was his shortest outing since May 9 in Houston, where Kluber gave up five runs in 2.2 innings. After going 4-1 in June with a 2.19 ERA and 37:7 K:BB in 37 innings, the right-hander just couldn't put the ball where he wanted it in his first July start. He'll look to shake it off Friday at home against the Yankees.
Jun 26 2016Kluber will have his next start pushed back to Tuesday against the Braves, Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.Kluber was originally scheduled to pitch the series opener Monday, but the Indians are building in an extra day of rest for him after he covered all nine innings in a shutout of the Rays last Tuesday, during which he threw 115 pitches. The decision shouldn't really change Kluber's fantasy outlook, as he'll still be in line for a two-start week, though the latter of those two turns comes against a surging Jays lineup.
Jun 21 2016Kluber (7-7) allowed just three hits and two walks and struck out nine in a complete game shutout victory Tuesday against the Rays. There's the Cy Young-level performance people have come to expect from Kluber. This marks his second shutout of the season and his second complete game in his past three starts. Kluber's propensity for blowups this season makes him more unreliable than the game's true greats -- he has allowed five runs or more four times in 15 starts this year -- but Tuesday's effort proves he's still capable of the magic of his past two seasons, when he had a 2.95 ERA in 457.2 combined innings.
Jun 16 2016Kluber (6-7) was tagged for eight runs on nine hits over five innings Wednesday in a loss against the Royals. He struck out seven and walked just one. That K:BB offers some bright side, but Kluber continues to be less than the sum of his peripherals. The 30-year-old is a long way from his Cy Young form of two years ago, as his once-spectacular strikeout rate's fallen in consecutive seasons while he's struggled to strand baserunners. The bright side is that some strand-rate correction should bring his ERA down into acceptable territory, but it's clear that despite his still-strong whiff rate and flashes of brilliance, Kluber can't be considered an upper-crust fantasy starter right now.
Jun 11 2016Kluber allowed two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out eight in a complete game victory over the Angels on Friday.Kluber evened his record at 6-6 and has now struck out eight or more batters in six straight starts and appears to be rounding into form after some uneven starts to start the season.
Jun 5 2016Kluber (5-6) allowed just two hits and two walks over six scoreless innings Sunday, striking out six, in a win against the Royals. It's his seventh quality start of the season, and Kluber has struck out six or more batters in five straight starts. His 3.84 ERA remains a bit inflated, but his 79:18 K:BB in 79.2 innings is still elite. Kluber will next take the mound on the road Friday against the Angels.
May 31 2016Kluber (4-6) allowed six runs on eight hits in seven innings, walking none and striking out six in Tuesday's loss to the Rangers.Although his 3.10 FIP isn't bad, Kluber's ERA has now climbed to 4.15. While the 2014 Cy Young Award winner has been far from the level that earned him those honors this season, owners can point to his 15:1 K:BB in the last two starts as a sign of a possible turnaround. He'll have a chance to start converting that impressive ratio to results elsewhere in his next outing Sunday against an unimpressive Royals offense.
May 21 2016Kluber (3-5) surrendered five hits, two earned runs and two walks in Friday's 4-2 victory over the Red Sox. He struck out six.The 30-year-old's rollercoaster season was on an upswing again Friday, as he extracted a measure of revenge against the club that touched him up for nine hits and four earned runs in his first start of the season. Kluber was able to largely neutralize one of the most dangerous offenses in baseball by throwing 66 of 105 pitches for strikes, and inducing 12 swinging strikes in the process. The former Cy Young winner has sandwiched a complete-game shutout of the Tigers and Friday's quality start around a pair of outings against the Astros and Twins where he gave up a combined 12 hits, nine earned runs and six walks over 9.1 innings. He'll try to put a second consecutive productive effort together when he faces the White Sox in Chicago next Wednesday.
May 15 2016Kluber (2-5) surrendered seven hits, four earned runs and three walks over 6.2 innings in Saturday's 6-3 loss to the Twins. He struck out seven.Kluber had some trouble with his control, throwing only 66 of his 110 pitches for strikes. He also issued multiple walks for the third straight start, and has now surrendered nine earned runs over the last nine innings across the two starts, following a complete-game gem against the Tigers on May 4. The recent struggles have the 30-year-old's ERA back up to 4.30, while his record continues to drift further away from the .500 mark.
May 9 2016Kluber (2-4) allowed five runs on five hits and three walks over 2.2 innings with three strikeouts in a loss Monday against the Astros.Kluber had allowed just three earned runs in his past three starts, a span covering 24 innings, before this disaster. While Kluber is still capable of gems, he has been far more vulnerable over the past season and change than he was in his Cy Young campaign of 2014. After allowing five earned runs or more just twice in 34 starts in his Cy season, he has been lit up for at least five runs seven times in 39 starts since. Two of those have come in 2016, and his ERA is now up to 4.14.
May 5 2016Kluber (2-3) looked like his old self Wednesday against the Tigers, tossing a complete-game shutout, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out seven.Kluber turned in a vintage performance Wednesday, creating a wave of groundball outs and sidestepping a handful of jams en route to a 4-0 victory. The righty generated 16 outs via grounders, including a pair of double plays while beating the Tigers for the second time this season. Aside from two bad outings in his first three, Kluber has been his normal self and holds a beautiful 42:7 K:BB through his first six starts (34 innings).
Apr 29 2016Kluber allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits, he did not walk a hitter and struck out six over seven innings, netting a no-decision against the Phillies on Friday night. After a rugged start to the season, Kluber turned in a second straight quality start, but came away with a no-decision as the Indians fell to Philadelphia 4-3 in 11 innings. He was efficient, needing just 90 pitches (61 for strikes) to cover seven innings, but he left with the game tied. He'll take an improving 4.24 ERA into his next start against Detroit.
Apr 24 2016Kluber (1-3) notched 10 strikeouts while pitching eight innings of two-hit ball, surrendering only an earned run in a 10-1 victory over the Tigers. The former Cy Young winner finally looked like himself in 2016, and notched his first victory of the season the hard way-- against a potent Tigers lineup in their home park. He did not issue a free pass for the first time all season, displaying excellent control and also inducing 12 swings-and-misses along the way. Although he enjoyed excellent run support he obviously didn't require it, and put together a highly encouraging bounceback effort after being knocked around for six earned runs over six innings versus the Mets on Apr. 17. Kluber will try to keep the momentum going in his next start against the Phillies on Friday night.
Apr 18 2016Kluber (0-3) dropped his third straight decision to begin the season Sunday, giving up six runs on nine hits and a walk over six innings while striking out eight as the Indians fell 6-0 to the Mets.He was the victim of some bad defense and unfavorable decisions by the official scorer, as Rajai Davis lost two fly balls in the sun which were ruled hits and not errors, contributing to a three-run second inning. Kluber's 19:5 K:BB through 19 innings on the season is excellent, though, and arguably more reflective of his performance than his unsightly 6.16 ERA. He'll try to turn things around in his next start Saturday, on the road in Detroit.
Apr 12 2016Kluber (0-2) took the loss Tuesday night against the Rays as he allowed three runs on four hits and two walks over 7.2 innings. He struck out six.Kluber was dominant early, as he opened with six shutout innings. But Logan Forsyth got to him for a two-run home run in the eighth inning, and that was the end of Kluber's night and any chance at a win. He was extremely nasty early on, as he induced 20 swinging strikes and 11 ground ball outs from the Rays. Kluber gave up 22 home runs last year and has give up one each in his two starts this year.
Apr 7 2016Kluber is no longer listed as a probable pitcher for this weekend's series with the White Sox following the postponement of Thursday's game against the Red Sox.Kluber was set to make his second start of the week Sunday, but Thursday's rainout, coupled with a team off day Monday, means his next start is now scheduled for Tuesday in Tampa Bay. While Kluber will not get two start this week, he should next week barring any further postponements.
Apr 4 2016Kluber's 2016 debut will be delayed until Tuesday following the announcement that the Opening Day game between the Red Sox and Indians has been postponed, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. There should be no problem with the weather Tuesday as Kluber prepares to square off against David Price to start the season. The 29-year-old was much more successful at home (2.83 ERA) than on the road (4.15 ERA) in 2015, so making his first start in Cleveland could help him get the momentum rolling early in the year.
Mar 5 2016Kluber is in line to be the Indians' starting pitcher on Opening Day, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. On Saturday, Manager Terry Francona said that Kluber will get the nod on Opening Day "as long as everything goes according to plan" for the Indians on April 4 game against the Red Sox. Kluber has been Cleveland's ace for the past few years and will be followed by Carlos Carrasco and Danny Salazar in the rotation.
Oct 3 2015Kluber (9-16) blanked the Red Sox over eight innings Saturday in 2-0 victory, surrendering only three hits and two walks. He struck out nine. After a five-start losing streak during which he was done in by a combination of questionable pitching and inconsistent run support, the stars finally aligned for Kluber on Saturday. The outing marked his second eight-inning shutout of 2015, and the third time overall that he blanked the opposing squad during his time on the mound. Although his ERA did rise over last year's number by a full point--going from 2.44 to 3.49--it was actually lower than the 3.85 figure he'd posted while amassing a solid 11-5 record in 2013. Kluber's other key metrics did not suffer any drastic drops this season either, and his BB/9 rate actually improved from 2014's 1.95 to 1.82. Nevertheless, the 29-year-old practically reversed his 2014 AL Cy Young-winning 18-9 record during a disappointing campaign, but certainly has the talent to rebound strongly next season.
Sep 28 2015Kluber fell to 8-16 with a loss Monday against the Twins, as he allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out six.Kluber has now received two or fewer runs of support in 17 of his 31 starts, and that's the real explanation behind his brutal record this year. Still, Kluber's ERA is up to 3.62, over a full run higher than his 2014 mark, and the home run he gave up to Trevor Plouffe was the 22nd he has allowed this year. If Kluber is going to contend for another Cy Young award, he'll have to find a way to keep the ball in the yard.
Sep 23 2015Kluber (8-15) lasted only 3.2 innings Wednesday, giving up four earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six in a 4-2 loss to the Twins. The Indians ace was pummeled in a nightmarish fourth inning, giving up a solo homer to Brian Dozier only to be yanked after giving up RBI hits to Trevor Plouffe and Eduardo Escobar. Kluber hasn't been particularly sharp since returning from the disabled list, failing to exceed four innings in each of his two starts. The reigning Cy Young Award winner will next take the mound Monday against the Twins.
Sep 18 2015Kluber (8-14) made his return from the disabled list on Thursday, as he allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits across four innings in a losing effort against the Royals. He struck out five in the game.Kluber made just 61 pitches in his return and it's no surprise as he had no rehab starts after suffering a hamstring injury a couple of weeks ago. The record and 3.44 ERA are unfair to the reigning Cy Young winner as all of his peripherals are still elite. The strikeout rate, walk rate, and WHIP are on par with his Cy Young season and the only major difference is the ERA. Kluber is a fantastic bet to bounce back next season and will likely be a nice value on draft day.
Sep 17 2015Kluber (hamstring) has been confirmed as the starting pitcher for Thursday's game against the Royals, MLB.com's Jordan Bastian reports.Kluber has not started since Aug. 29 due to a hamstring injury, but he will get back on the mound Thursday night. He is 1-3 with a 4.34 ERA and 27:6 K:BB ratio in 29 innings over four starts against the Royals this season.
Sep 15 2015Kluber (hamstring) has been cleared by the Indians' medical staff to start Thursday's game, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.Kluber threw a successful bullpen session Friday and was cleared Tuesday after completing fielding drills. He'll make his first start since August 29 on Thursday against the Royals, a team he's faced four times this season. In his last outing against Kansas City, Kluber pitched a complete game five-hitter, allowing just one earned run and one walk with six strikeouts in a 12-1 Indians victory.
Sep 14 2015Kluber (hamstring) threw a bullpen session Monday and will do fielding work Tuesday.Kluber got through a bullpen session last Friday without incident, so it appears he is nearing a return to the rotation. If all goes well Monday and Tuesday, Kluber will get the starting nod Thursday against the Royals.
Sep 12 2015Manager Terry Francona was not yet willing to name Corey Kluber (hamstring) as the starter for Wednesday's game, MLB.com's Jordan Bastian reports. The Indians need a starter for Wednesday's game following Friday's rainout, and if he is deemed healthy, Kluber would be the obvious choice. However, Francona said Kluber is still day-to-day with his sore right hamstring.
Sep 11 2015Kluber (hamstring) got through his bullpen session without trouble Friday, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.Kluber could rejoin the rotation next week if he checks out okay following Friday's session.
Sep 10 2015Kluber (hamstring) will throw a bullpen session Friday and meet with the team Saturday to determine a potential return date, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.Kluber has been out since late-August, but he's progressing well and has been throwing regularly. Assuming Friday's session goes well, he could return to the mound as early as next week as the Indians continue to chase a Wild Card spot.
Sep 9 2015Kluber (hamstring) has been throwing regularly and could return soon, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. "My guess is that he'll be ready to pitch fairly quick," manager Terry Francona said, "just because he feels really good. Obviously, he's champing at the bit, so we'll let it run its proper course, but as soon as he's ready to pitch and allowed to pitch, we'll pitch him."Kluber has been sidelined since August 29 and was originally expected to miss at least 10 days. The Indians plan on sitting down with Kluber on Thursday which figures to give some further clarity on a possible return date.
Sep 4 2015Kluber (hamstring) is expected to miss at least 10 days, Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. "We'll pitch him when he's ready," manager Terry Francona said.Initial reports suggested Kluber wouldn't miss much time, but it now sounds like he'll miss at least one additional start after being scratched from his scheduled outing Friday due to a hamstring strain. Josh Tomlin will fill in for Kluber on Friday against Kyle Lobstein and the Tigers. Francona said Kluber injured the hamstring during his recent bullpen session.
Sep 4 2015Kluber has been scratched from his Friday start with a right hamstring strain.Kluber shouldn't miss too much time, but MLB.com's Jordan Bastian is reporting he could miss another start too. Josh Tomlin will serve as a fill-in Friday and possibly in five days too.
Aug 29 2015Kluber hurled a quality start on Saturday in a no-decision, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks across six innings while striking out six Angels.Kluber allowed a homer on the first pitch of the game and another solo homer on the first pitch after a 45-minute rain delay. Clearly, the Angels have a good read on what Kluber likes to throw for a first pitch and it really bit him here. He has now allowed six home runs over his last three starts and that's really the only thing he's doing wrong at this point. He'll carry a 3.41 ERA and 1.03 WHIP into his next start against Detroit next Saturday.
Aug 28 2015Kluber will have his next start moved forward one day, as he'll now start Saturday against the Angels. With Danny Salazar scratched from Friday's start with an illness, Kluber will be called upon to take the hill a day earlier than expected. The reigning AL Cy Young winner is coming off a dominant start, going 7.2 innings with 11 strikeouts while allowing just one run in a no-decision against the Cubs.
Aug 24 2015Kluber struck out 11 and gave up one run on four hits over 7.2 innings in a no-decision against the Cubs on Monday. It was an excellent outing for the AL Cy Young award winner, but the Cleveland offense failed to plate a run prior to his exit and he departed facing a 1-0 deficit. Kluber threw 121 pitches in the start -- including 83 strikes -- while racking up 19 swinging strikes. He'll take the ball Sunday against the Angels in his next scheduled start.
Aug 19 2015Kluber (8-13) struck out nine over six innings Wednesday in Boston, but was scorched for six runs on six hits and a walk. It's well and good to miss bats, but when you also give up four homers, it's hard to be effective. To be fair, two of them were Fenway Park cheap shots, but hey, they all count. Kluber's rate stats aren't bad at this point, thanks in no small part to the trio of one-run complete games he's tossed in his last five starts, but his inconsistencies this year have been maddening for fantasy owners, particularly in head-to-head formats.
Aug 14 2015Kluber (8-12) went the distance on Friday, striking out seven while giving up one run on one hit and a walk in a win over the Twins.A fourth inning solo homer by Joe Mauer was the lone hit Kluber surrendered on Friday. Kluber has gone nine innings while giving up just a single run in three of his past four starts, including back-to-back outings against Minnesota. Kluber has also pitched a clunker or two in recent weeks, but when he's on, he's been dominant. For the season, Kluber is averaging 9.6 K/9 and his 1.04 WHIP is on pace for a career best.
Aug 9 2015Kluber was excellent in Sunday's start, striking out 10 and walking just one while holding the Twins to one run in a complete game victory. The righty, who improved to 7-12 on the season, took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and didn't allow a run until the ninth in this dominant performance. Kluber bounced back nicely from a rough outing earlier this week and he will face this same Twins team Friday in his next scheduled start.
Aug 4 2015Kluber fell to 6-12 after allowing five runs on 10 hits over 5.2 innings Monday against the Angels. He struck out four.Kluber has still been very good in 2015, with a 3.60 ERA and a brilliant 176:32 K:BB, but he has been prone to blowups this year. He now has allowed five runs or more six time in 23 starts, something he did just four times in 34 starts in 2014. Kluber's record is brutal, but he hasn't been nearly so bad as to deserve a .333 winning percentage.
Jul 30 2015Kluber struck out six and walked one while holding the Royals to one run on five hits during a complete game effort Wednesday. He earned his sixth win of the season Thursday and lowered his ERA to 3.44 with the complete game effort. While his peripherals are right in line with his Cy Young winning performance of 2014, his LOB% has fallen from 78.6% last season, to 70.1% in 2015. As a result, his ERA is a full run higher than it was a year ago, while his FIP (2.52) suggests that he's still boasting the skills necessary to be elite. Kluber is positioned for two starts next week, first facing the Angels on the road Monday before an August 9 home start against the Twins.
Jul 24 2015Kluber allowed six runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out seven over seven-plus innings of a 6-0 loss to the White Sox on Friday night.Kluber (5-11, 3.59 ERA) was locked in a good pitcher's duel with Chicago's Jose Quintana, trailing just 2-0 after seven innings. He came back out for the eighth inning, but allowed four consecutive hitters to reach, all of which came around to score, sending him to his 11th loss on the season. As his numbers indicate, a combination of bad luck, bad timing, and bad run support have all contributed to a very disappointing season.
Jul 7 2015Kluber tossed 6.2 shutout innings Tuesday against the Astros, allowing five hits and two walks while fanning seven and picking up his fourth win of the season. It was Kluber's first win since May 28, as he finally got some run support, albeit only two runs. He came in receiving the second-lowest run support average (2.43 runs) in the majors, which is why fantasy owners have to be hopeful that things can turn and he can offer even more value in the second half. Even with a 4-9 record, Kluber has added plenty of fantasy value, as his 148 strikeouts lead the majors. He will start the Indians' final game of the first half Sunday against the A's.
Jul 3 2015Kluber struck out 14 over eight innings Thursday in Tampa, but also gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk.He didn't receive a decision for his trouble, as this game ended up taking 10 innings to decide. Nonetheless, he continues to pile up the double-digit-strikeout games, as Thursday's was his second in a row and fifth in his last 10 starts. Kluber just needs to avoid the one or two bad innings that seem to dog him every start. He holds a solid 1.16 WHIP over his last seven starts, but a non-matching 3.86 ERA, as Kluber continues to be haunted by a low strand rate and high BABIP.
Jun 26 2015Kluber notched a quality start, allowing three runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out 10 over seven innings, but came away with a no-decision in a game Baltimore would win 4-3 Friday night.Kluber (3-9, 3.66 ERA) pitched well enough to deserve a win, but as has happened so often this year, the run support just wasn't there. Coming into this game, his mates were averaging barely two runs per game in his starts, so that balky record should improve if things start going his way.
Jun 20 2015Kluber lasted seven innings, but took the loss Saturday against the Rays with four runs allowed and six strikeouts.Saturday's loss pushes Kluber down 3-9 in 2015 and four straight since the beginning of June. While Kluber and his disappointing 3.65 ERA are a part of that, it definitely doesn't help that he ranks 106th out of 107 in MLB run support with 2.20 runs per start. It's highly probable that stat regresses to the mean with time.
Jun 9 2015Kluber (3-7) allowed two runs on seven hits and three walks over seven innings in Tuesday's loss to Seattle. He also struck out four.Kluber settled down after allowing RBI doubles in each of the first two innings, tossing five shutout frames before being pulled with 112 pitches thrown. He will face the Tigers on Sunday.
Jun 4 2015Kluber allowed four runs on nine hits and a walk to go with nine strikeouts in eight innings Wednesday against the Royals. With Wednesday's loss, Kluber dropped to 0-3 against the Royals this season. The reigning Cy Young winner struck out nine, giving him 105 strikeouts for the season and making him the quickest Indians pitcher to eclipse 100 since Sam McDowell in 1970. Kluber's next outing will be Tuesday against Seattle.
May 29 2015Kluber struck out 13 in seven innings Thursday, giving up three runs on seven hits and a walk against the Mariners.Kluber (3-5) gave up a pair of home runs to Mike Zunino in the third and Dustin Ackley in the sixth, but other than that, Kluber was dominant. Eight of the final nine outs recorded by Kluber came via strikeout, including getting Nelson Cruz swinging for the final out of the seventh with a runner on. The reigning AL Cy Young award winner improved to 3-0 with 50 strikeouts and two walks in his last four starts. Kluber's next start will be against the reeling Royals on Wednesday.
May 23 2015Kluber had his third straight strong start Saturday, giving up just one run on nine hits over eight innings while striking out seven to pick up his second win of the season.Kluber has now got a mind-boggling 37:1 K:BB over those three starts (25 innings), and in the process, he's lowered his ERA on the season to 3.49. His next start, on the road in Seattle's spacious Safeco Field on Thursday, will give him a very good chance to make it four straight dominant outings.
May 18 2015Kluber hurled nine innings Monday against the White Sox, striking out 12 batters and only allowing one run, though he received no decision.Kluber is clearly back to his normal self after a rough start to the season -- he's struck out a stunning 30 batters in his last two outings. Despite going nine innings, he couldn't earn the complete game, as the matchup went into extra innings. Still, owners should be completely confident using Kluber. His next start is Saturday against the Reds.
May 13 2015Kluber (1-5) dramatically turned around his season Wednesday, striking out 18 batters over eight innings of one-hit shutout ball against the Cardinals.Kluber came into the game looking for his first win of the year, and he got that and more, turning in probably the finest non-no-hitter start you'll see all season long. With 113 pitches under his belt, Kluber didn't come out for the ninth inning and a chance at tying or beating the all-time record of 20 strikeouts in a ninth-inning game. Fantasy owners who managed to buy him after a slow start have to be ecstatic over this outing by the reigning AL Cy Young winner. He'll try to put on a fitting encore Monday against the White Sox.
May 7 2015Kluber (0-5) took another loss Thursday, giving up five runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings against the Royals. He struck out seven, walked two and hit a batter.Things have just not been going right for Kluber over his last four starts, as he's been torched for 38 hits and 22 runs (19 earned) over just 23 innings. However, his peripherals remain strong, so it's a good time to offer up a trade to a panicky owner of last year's AL Cy Young winner.
May 3 2015Kluber saw his record drop to 0-4 on Saturday, as he coughed up five runs (four earned) on eight hits and two walks over five innings, striking out three. He now has a very un-Cy Young-like 4.62 ERA, but Kluber's 39:9 K:BB ratio in 39 innings is still excellent, and his numbers should come down once his balls in play start finding gloves. He'll look for his first win of the season next week in Kansas City.
Apr 22 2015Kluber struck out six and walked one while giving up six runs on 13 hits over six innings in a loss to the White Sox on Wednesday afternoon.Cold conditions in Chicago were offset by steady wind that was blowing out Wednesday. Kluber allowed just two runs in each of his first three starts, so the rough showing against the White Sox pushed his season ERA from 2.49 to 3.90. He's been sharp overall, carrying a 31:5 K:BB over 27.2 innings. Kluber is schedule to face the Royals on Monday in his next scheduled start.
Apr 18 2015Kluber gave up just two runs and three hits over eight innings, but got a no-decision in Friday's loss to Minnesota.Kluber retired the first 15 hitters he faced and had eight strikeouts and one walk, but the Indians couldn't get him enough runs for the win. He's having a strong start to the season with a 2.49 ERA and 25:4 K:BB ratio in 21.2 innings through three starts.
Apr 6 2015Kluber gave up two earned runs on three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over 7.1 innings Monday against the Astros. He took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before the Astros were able to manufacture a run, that would prove to be all they needed as the Indians were held scoreless on Opening Day. Kluber looked like his typical dominant self for much of the game, and certainly pitched well enough to win. The defending Cy Young award winner will go for his first win of 2015 on Sunday against the Tigers.
Apr 4 2015Kluber has agreed to a five-year contract extension that includes two option years, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports.Financial details haven't been reported yet, but the Indians will lock up their ace for seven more years.
Apr 4 2015Kluber is close to reaching an agreement on a long-term deal with the Indians, Fox's Ken Rosenthal reports.Kluber still isn't arbitration-eligible and was renewed by the Indians on a one-year, $601 thousand deal earlier in March for 2015. This presumably would wipe out his arbitration years if a deal is agreed upon.
Mar 16 2015Kluber will be the Opening Day starter on April 6 at Houston, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. The move comes as no surprise after Kluber's Cy Young winning campaign in 2014. He'll look to build on that this year, starting off against Houston.
Mar 7 2015Kluber allowed a run on three hits over three innings in his first appearance of the spring Saturday.Kluber was dealing with the flu earlier in the week but was able to make his first start as planned Saturday.
Mar 5 2015Kluber (flu) was able to toss a side session Thursday and should be able to make his first appearance of the spring as scheduled this weekend.Kluber was dealing with some flu-like symptoms Wednesday but it appears the reigning Cy Young winner should be able to make his first start of the spring this weekend.
Mar 4 2015Kluber (illness) could have his first Cactus League appearance, scheduled for Saturday, pushed back due to the flu, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.Kluber threw two innings in a simulated game Tuesday but was dealing with the flu Wednesday. Don't be alarmed if the Indians proceed with a little but of caution with their ace but this won't have any impact on his readiness for the start of the regular season.
Nov 12 2014Kluber has been named the 2014 American League Cy Young Award winner, ESPN.com reports.Kluber's 269 strikeouts were just two shy of David Price for the AL lead, and the 28-year-old also posted the league's third best ERA (2.44) and sixth best WHIP (1.09). His 18 wins were tied for the AL lead, further helping his case for beating out both Felix Hernandez and Chris Sale for the award. After the best season of his career, the right-hander will join southpaw Clayton Kershaw in the 2014 class of Cy Young Award winners.
Sep 26 2014Kluber was brilliant again Friday night, tossing eight shutout innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out 11 in a 1-0 win over Tampa Bay.What else is there to say about Kluber (18-9, 2.44 ERA)? The 11 punchouts give him a major league best 269 on the season, and he has clearly positioned himself as a strong candidate for the Cy Young award. He will no doubt be a popular target in fantasy drafts next spring.
Sep 21 2014For the second game in a row, Kluber struck out 14 batters Sunday against the Twins, allowing two runs over eight innings on seven hits and a walk. He picked up his 17th win of the year in the process. With the back-to-back 14 strikeouts, Kluber is in the same company as the likes of Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez and Bob Gibson. It'll be interesting to see how early he goes among other aces in next year's drafts.
Sep 16 2014Kluber struck out a career-high 14 Tuesday, going seven innings while giving up just one run on seven hits and two walks against the Astros en route to his 16th win. This was Kluber's ninth double-digit strikeout outing of the season, and he now has 244 on the season, which will make him one of the top targets among starting pitchers on draft day in 2015. He will get two more opportunities to pad those numbers this season, first on Sunday in Minnesota, and then his last start of the season will come Sept. 27 against the Rays.
Sep 12 2014Kluber (15-9) came two outs short of his second consecutive complete game Thursday against Minnesota, giving up just two runs on eight hits and striking out seven over 8.1 innings in the 8-2 victory. With yet another terrific game, Kluber has now exceeded the 200-inning mark for the first time in his career. Sep 6 2014Kluber tossed a complete game and struck out eight en route to his 14th win of the season Saturday. After making mechanical tweaks in between starts, Kluber got back on a track in a big way Saturday. The White Sox could only muster an unearned run against him in what turned out to be a complete game, five-hitter for the right-hander. Kluber will face the Twins at Progressive Field on Thursday in his next scheduled start.
Sep 2 2014The Indians are hopeful that some tweaks to Kluber's mechanics may help explain his recent struggles, MLB.com reports.Kluber's allowed 11 runs (eight earned) on 22 hits over 16 innings in his last three starts after a dominant stretch in his previous ten starts. Kluber's already pitched a career-high 195.1 innings this season and the Indians will need him to be excellent down the stretch as they try and claw their way back into the playoff picture.
Sep 1 2014Kluber lost Monday against the Tigers as he pitched 2.2 innings and allowed five runs, seven hits and two walks to go along with two strikeouts.Kluber had allowed three runs or less in his last eight starts entering Monday, so this kind of performance is clearly more of an aberration instead of the norm. He has been spectacular overall this season as he is 13-9 with a 2.72 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 215 strikeouts.
Aug 27 2014Kluber gave up three runs on nine hits over 6.1 innings Wednesday against the White Sox.Most of the damage came from the top of the White Sox's lineup, as Jose Abreu, Adam Dunn and Adam Eaton combined for four extra-base hits against the Cleveland right-hander. Kluber generated 25 swinging strikes on 118 pitches, and avoided the damage of long balls in a tough road spot Wednesday. He's lined up for two home starts next week, facing the Tigers on Monday before a second start Saturday (September 6) against the White Sox.

Aug 18 2014Kluber's next start will be pushed back one day to Thursday. There's nothing wrong with Kluber - the Indians just wanted to give him one extra day of rest before the final stretch run.
Aug 15 2014Kluber was on top of his game again Friday night, allowing just one run on five hits, walking two and striking out 10 over 7.2 innings, but came away with a no-decision against the Orioles. The run he allowed was just the second he's given up over his last five starts - a span of 39 innings. Unfortunately, Kluber's mound opponent Wei-Yin Chen matched him pretty much pitch-for-pitch as the game would eventually go into extra innings. He's likely to see the Twins in Minnesota next time out.
Aug 9 2014Kluber fanned 10 over six shutout innings Saturday, giving up just four hits and a walk against the Yankees.Kluber's owners have become incredibly spoiled of late, and were probably surprised to see the Indians' ace only go six innings Saturday. He didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning en route to his 13th win. Nobody in baseball is on a more dominant roll than the Klubot, who has given up just one run over his last four starts (31.1 innings). He is averaging nine strikeouts per start over his last five outings and will look to remain untouchable in his next start Friday against the Orioles.
Aug 4 2014Kluber pitched well in a win Monday night, holding the Reds to one run in 7.1 innings of work.Kluber struck out seven and walked two en route to his 12th win of the season. He will face the Reds on Monday.
Jul 24 2014Kluber was outstanding in Thursday's extra-inning game at Kansas City, but recorded a no-decision. He allowed an unearned run and two hits over nine strong innings, striking out 10 batters.Kluber took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, before Omar Infante singled with one out. He deserved better than a no-decision, but youngster Danny Duffy was equally as good, tossing seven scoreless innings. Sporting a 2.79 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 149.1 innings this season, Kluber continues to pitch like a true fantasy ace. He's got an easy matchup in his next start, at least on paper, squaring off against Seattle at home.
Jul 19 2014Kluber fell just short of a complete game Saturday, striking out 10 batters over 8.2 innings in a 6-2 win over the Tigers.Kluber nearly went the distance for the second time this season, only to be pulled with two outs in the ninth after surrendering a pair of doubles. He picked up win No. 10 while notching his fifth double-digit strikeout performance of the year, pushing his K:BB to an outstanding 152:33. After shutting down a strong Detroit lineup on the road, Kluber will head to Kansas City for his next outing, which is scheduled for Thursday against Royals lefty Danny Duffy.
Jul 11 2014Kluber allowed four runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out five over six innings of a 7-4 win against the White Sox on Friday night.Kluber (9-6, 3.01 ERA) turned in, what has become for him, a pretty marginal performance, but it was good enough to net him his ninth win of the season. He has been one of the truly outstanding sources of quality innings this season and will look to keep that going after the break.
Jul 6 2014Kluber picked up his eighth win of the season Sunday against the Royals, yielding one run on four hits and a walk while striking out 10 batters.Kluber has been on point his last three outings, giving up a total of two runs and posting a 23:3 K:BB ratio over 22 frames. The 28-year-old's uninspiring numbers in the major leagues prior to last season haven't allowed Kluber to claim the national attention he deserves, but at this point, he can probably be considered a must-start pitcher in just about any fantasy format. Few hurlers in the game are as skilled at making batters whiff while also limiting their walks allowed.
Jul 1 2014Kluber get the tough luck loss against the Dodgers on Monday, allowing one run over 6.2 innings with a walk and five strikeouts.Kluber pitched well enough to win, but ran into a Dodgers team that is on fire. The right-hander falls to a mediocre 7-6 record that isn't indicative of how good the rest of his numbers are. So far in 2014, Kluber has a 2.99 ERA, 1.22 Whip and 127:29 K:BB in 117.1 innings. He'll face the Royals on Sunday.
Jun 20 2014Kluber allowed two runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out six over seven innings but came away with a tough-luck loss against Detroit on Friday night. Now 6-5 with a 3.30 ERA, it was encouraging to see his command sharper (109 pitches, 72 for strikes) after a couple of outings where he wasn't locating his pitches like he had been earlier in the year. He'll take on the Diamondbacks in Arizona next time out.
Jun 15 2014Kluber gave up two runs over 5.1 innings while not factoring into the decision in Sunday's extra-inning victory over the Red Sox. He walked four batters and struck out four.Kluber has pitched respectably during his three outings in June, but he's no longer racking up the strikeouts at nearly as impressive of a clip as he did during his five May turns. A lack of control appeared to be the biggest inhibitor in allowing Kluber to work deeper into the game Sunday, with the four walks tying a season-high.
Jun 10 2014Kluber gave up three earned runs on six hits and two walks in five innings pitched while also striking out five batters in the Indians' 9-5 loss to the Royals Tuesday.Kluber, who was saddled with the loss (6-4), failed to go six innings for the first time since his April 29 start in Anaheim. Despite the hiccup, Kluber still has a 3.35 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 104/22 K/BB ratio. Kluber's next start is set for Sunday in Boston.
May 30 2014Kluber overwhelmed the Rockies allowing just two runs on five hits, walking one and striking out 12 over 7.1 innings of a 5-2 Indians win Friday night. He put the icing on what has been an incredible month where he went 4-0 with a 2.09 ERA and logged 60 strikeouts. In the past 10 seasons, only he and Yu Darvish (August, 2013) have piled up 60 strikeouts in a single month. He'll try to keep it clicking in June when he takes on the Red Sox in Cleveland next time out.
May 24 2014Kluber improved to 5-3 with a win over the Orioles on Saturday. He gave up just five hits and two walks while striking out nine over seven scoreless innings.Kluber has come on in a major way for the Tribe after a lackluster month of April, posting a 2.02 ERA with a 48:7 strikeout-to-walk ratio in five May starts. He's fanned nine or more in five of his last seven outings and, for the moment at least, leads all of baseball with 83 punchouts.
May 9 2014Kluber tossed 6.2 solid innings, allowing two earned runs on nine hits with nine strikeouts en route to a 6-3 victory over the Rays Friday night. After posting a pedestrian 4.14 ERA for April, Kluber has been flat out dominant over his two starts this month. The 28-year-old right-hander has surrendered just three runs on a dozen hits while registering 22 punchouts across his last 14.2 innings.
May 4 2014Kluber was incredible Sunday against the White Sox, striking out a career-best 13 batters over eight innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks. He would take a no-decision despite the sterling outing.Closer John Axford squandered all of Kluber's good work with just one pitch, as Dayan Viciedo connected on a go-ahead three-run homer that would take a win away from the starter. The 28-year-old Kluber has now notched double-digit strikeout totals in two of his last three starts, but still carries an uninspiring 2-3 record on the season.
Apr 30 2014Kluber struggled Tuesday, giving up four runs on eight hits in just 4.2 innings of work in a 6-4 loss to the Angels. Despite picking up five K's, he fired just 55-of-92 pitches for strikes.Owners who jumped on the Kluber Train after his four-hit, 11 K, complete-game win over the Royals on May 24 were left disappointed after this outing - the first in which he's failed to last six innings or more since his first start of the season. The loss drops Cleveland's No. 2 starter to a record of 2-3 on the season to go along with his 4.14 ERA, 35 K's and 1.51 WHIP. Kluber will next toe the rubber in the series opener against the Twins on Monday.
Apr 24 2014Kluber (2-2) dominated the Royals on Thursday, striking out 11, walking none and allowing just an unearned run on four hits in a complete-game victory.Kluber had run the gamut from so-so to downright awful in his first four outings of the year, but this was a much finer effort. This marks the third time in five starts he's gone without walking a batter, but he's still just a middling fantasy option.
Apr 19 2014Kluber gave up five runs (four earned) on nine hits and zero walks, while striking out three over 6.2 innings, in a loss to the Blue Jays on Saturday.Failing to carry the momentum from his last two starts, Kluber came out and gave up two runs right away in the first inning Saturday. He's now allowed 34 hits in four outings (.337 BAA), but his rotation spot is secure and there are likely brighter days ahead for the 28-year-old.
Apr 8 2014Kluber bounced back Tuesday from his woeful first start, pitching six innings while giving up three earned runs on nine hits while striking out eight and walking none against the Padres.Five of Kluber's nine hits allowed went for doubles, but he kept the ball in the park, and didn't issue any free passes, which allowed him to control the damage, despite being pretty hittable. If you didn't panic on Kluber after his first start of the season, Tuesday's outing should be viewed as an encouraging sign, especially in the strikeout department. His next start will come Sunday in a U.S. Cellular Field, a hitter's paradise, so those wary of Kluber's start to the season may want to keep him on the bench.
Apr 7 2014Kluber will not start Monday against the Padres after rain resulted in a postponement, Joe Reedy of FOX Sports Ohio reports. The two teams will make the game up as part of a doubleheader Wednesday. Kluber could still get the nod Tuesday for the Indians, allowing him to still provide fantasy owners with a two-start week since he'd remain on track to start Sunday against the White Sox.
Apr 2 2014Kluber allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks in his season debut Wednesday.Kluber enjoyed a nice spring on the heels of his breakout season last year but didn't fare well in his first start of the season.

Sep 27 2013Kluber allowed six runs on 10 hits, walking one and striking out five over 5.1 innings and came away with the win as Cleveland defeated the Twins 12-6 Friday night.Kluber is now 11-5 and has a modest 3.85 ERA, but he has had difficulty pitching deep into games lately, as he hasn't completed six innings in ant of his last five starts. His teammates provided him with a seven run lead after just two innings in this one, so it would have been nice to see him make that seemingly comfortable lead stand up.
Sep 18 2013Kluber couldn't escape the fifth inning Tuesday, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks over 4.2 frames.Considering all those base runners, Kluber should consider himself lucky to get off with such minimal damage. He'd looked solid, if unspectacular, in his first two starts back from a month-long DL stint, but this was a step backward.
Sep 7 2013Kluber allowed two runs over five innings and was the winning pitcher Saturday against the Mets.He gave up five hits while walking one and striking out five. This was his first start since August 5 and he showed very little rust, handling the Mets with ease over his five innings of work. Kluber was pitching very well prior to his stint on the DL as he had lowered his ERA from 4.33 on July 2 to 3.54 by August 5. His next start will come on the road September 12 against the White Sox.
Sep 7 2013Kluber (finger) was activated from the 15-day DL on Saturday, MLB.com reports. As was announced earlier in the week, Kluber will return to the rotation to make his first start since Aug. 5, as a sprained finger forced him to the DL for just over a month. He'll be capped at around 80 pitches in his first outing post-injury, but shouldn't be under any sort of restriction moving forward with the Indians needing all hands on deck as they make their push for the postseason.
Sep 3 2013Kluber (finger) will no longer be used in relief Friday, and will instead start against the Mets on Saturday, MLB.com's Jordan Bastian reports.Though he will be limited to 75-to-80 pitches, this still gives Kluber a better shot to notch a win. He's been out since Aug. 5 with a sprained right middle finger, but will not head out on a minor-league rehab assignment. The Indians changed their plan because Justin Masterson (oblique) will miss his next start.
Sep 2 2013Kluber (finger) will follow Friday's starter Scott Kazmir against the Mets, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.Kluber emerged unscathed from a simulated game Monday and will pitch as a long reliever Friday in his first MLB appearance since August 5. His sprained right middle finger has seemingly recovered in the minimum amount of time possible (four weeks), but his value will be limited until he's able garner starting nods.
Sep 1 2013Kluber (finger) could start for the Indians on Friday if his simulated game Monday goes well, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.Kluber isn't fully stretched out yet after being out for a month and figures to be limited to four innings or 60 pitches so he doesn't figure to pitch long enough for a win even if he's effective.
Aug 30 2013Kluber (finger), who threw a bullpen session Friday, could return to the Indians' rotation late next week, after potential completion of a simulated game Monday, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.Kluber is taking the necessary steps in his recovery from a sprained right middle finger. If he does in fact emerge unscathed Monday, his first start since August 5 appears to be imminent.
Aug 28 2013Kluber (finger) could rejoin the Indians following a simulated game Saturday, MLB.com reports. "Kluber did really well today [in the bullpen], which was not a surprise," manager Terry Francona said. "He's kind of flying through this. ... We'll run into September and, as long as he's throwing the ball well, even if he's not fully stretched out, he can still help us. Those are things we have to figure out."Kluber could come back in an abbreviated start along with Danny Salazar or Scott Kazmir before he's fully stretched out. Look for a return in early September in Saturday's simulated game goes well.
Aug 27 2013Kluber (finger) was able to throw his slider and cutter Tuesday off flat ground, MLB.com reports. The development comes one day removed from a mound session in which Kluber mixed in his fastball and change-up. While he is slated to fit in another bullpen session Wednesday, his schedule beyond that point is unclear. However, once he is able to include his entire repertoire of pitches during mound work, he'll likely embark upon a rehab assignment.
Aug 24 2013Kluber (finger) will throw off a mound Monday, MLB.com reports.Kluber's throwing program has included throwing out to 180 feet with protective tape and 90 feet without the aid on his sprained right middle finger. A few of the aforementioned bullpen sessions will likely lead to a rehab assignment, with a potential return to the Indians' rotation during the early portions of September.
Aug 21 2013Kluber (finger) will resume his throwing program Friday after throwing from a distance of 90 feet with protective tape Wednesday, MLB.com reports.Kluber figures to advance to some mound sessions in the near future given his current pace. He could rejoin the Indians in early September.

Aug 17 2013Kluber (finger) played catch from 120 feet Saturday and will begin the next phase of his rehab next week, MLB.com reports. The next phase will have Kluber remove the protective taping from his finger during his long-toss sessions. He'll then continue on to some mound sessions barring any setbacks.
Aug 16 2013Kluber (finger) played catch prior to Friday's game, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.Kluber was still wearing tape on his finger, an indication he's not quite fully healed yet. He's expected to have the tape removed next week, at which point he'd be cleared to resume mound work.
Aug 13 2013Kluber (finger) played catch from a distance of 60 feet Tuesday, MLB.com reports. "He's progressing really well," manager Terry Francona said. "You're kind of at the mercy of the way it's going to heal. But he seems to be healing quickly."Kluber will throw for 90 and 100 feet with his finger taped before removing the tape and repeating that schedule before progressing to mound work. He's likely at least three weeks away from a possible return to the rotation.
Aug 13 2013Kluber (finger) hopes to resume throwing in the next day or two, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. The Indians faced a similar situation with Zach McAllister earlier this season but are hoping Kluber can return quicker than the seven weeks it took McAllister. They'll have a better idea once he resumes his throwing program but an early-September return seems to be the best case scenario at this point.
Aug 7 2013Kluber is expected to be sidelined 4-to-6 weeks due to a sprain of his right middle finger.Once he is free of symptoms, Kluber will start up a throwing program, but the injury is clearly a hit to the Indians' playoff chances, as he has pitched extremely well since the break. In four starts during that stretch, he earned no decisions but recorded a 2.33 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and 22:4 K:BB ratio in 27 innings.
Aug 6 2013Kluber was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday due to a sprained finger on his right hand.In four second-half starts, Kluber has been particularly strong, posting a 2.33 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and 22:4 K:BB ratio in 27 innings. While he has not picked up a decision during that stretch, two of the outings have resulted in quality starts. It is unclear who will earn a spot start or two, but top prospect Trevor Bauer is a candidate to take over for Kluber in the Indians' rotation.
Aug 5 2013Kluber did not record a decision Monday against the Tigers as he pitched 7.1 scoreless-innings and allowed six hits and one walk to go along with six strikeouts.Kluber was in line for the win Monday, but came away with a no decision as his bullpen couldn't hold the lead. Although he only has seven wins to show for it, Kluber has been solid this season overall as he has a 3.54 ERA to go along with 116 strikeouts in 122 innings pitched.
Jul 31 2013Kluber pitched well in a no-decision Wednesday, allowing four runs over 8.2 innings against the White Sox.One of Kluber's runs scored after reliever Cody Allen was unable to close the door in relief of the Indians' starter. The owner of a 3.77 ERA and 1.21 WHIP, Kluber will look for his eighth win of the year when he faces the Tigers next week.
Jul 26 2013Kluber allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits, walking one and striking out three over six innings, but was not involved in the decision as the Indians downed Texas 11-8 in 11 innings Friday night. He tossed 95 pitches (66 for strikes) and did not appear to be negatively impacted by the sore left hip that forced him to leave his last start early. He should be good to go in his upcoming starts if he is someone you are counting on in your fantasy rotation.
Jul 23 2013Kluber (hip) threw a bullpen session Tuesday with no issues and remains in line to start Friday's game against the Rangers, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.Kluber left his last start Saturday with stiffness in his left him. However, it appears the stiffness has subsided and, barring a setback, he'll take the mound Friday.
Jul 21 2013Kluber (hip) is still in line to start Friday against the Rangers, Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. With an off-day looming Thursday, the Indians could opt to push Kluber back a day so he could further rest his tight hip, but as long as he completes his between-starts bullpen session Tuesday without issue, the right-hander should be ready to roll Friday. As things line up now, Kluber will oppose left-hander Martin Perez.
Jul 20 2013Kluber left Saturday's start with tightness in his left hip, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. He had pitched five scoreless innings when manager Terry Francona gave him the hook, and the hip injury explains why. He was on track for the victory in this one, but the Twins rallied off the Indians' bullpen in the following inning. Kluber has not allowed a run over his last 13.2 innings, and he has struck out 28 over 24.1 July innings. Whether his next July start will be delayed pends the health of his hip.
Jul 12 2013Kluber tossed 7.2 scoreless innings and struck out eight in a 3-0 win Friday.Kluber's turned in two nice outings in a row now after a rough three-start stretch. He's been a sneaky source of strikeouts in most formats and could see his ERA drop in the second half if he's able to do a better job of keeping the ball in the yard.
Jul 3 2013Kluber was roughed up for a third straight start as he gave up four runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts over just 5.1 innings against the Royals on Tuesday.Kluber was actually holding the Royals in check through the first four innings but ran into trouble in the fifth when he loaded the bases and gave up a grand slam to Alex Gordon. Kluber has now given up 13 runs over his last 15.2 innings (three starts) and continues to get burned by the long ball. While his peripherals indicate that he's better than his ERA indicates, he's not going to see much improvement if he can't keep the ball in the yard. With the Tigers up next, things aren't going to get any easier for him.
Jun 27 2013Kluber was roughed up Thursday, allowing seven runs -- six earned -- and 11 hits in just 4.2 innings.Kluber has been shaky in his last two starts after a pair of gems in his previous two outings. He's shown some promise this year, averaging nearly a strikeout per inning, but it might be wise to use him judiciously, given his current inconsistency.
Jun 11 2013Kluber gave up just one earned run on six hits and three walks over eight innings while striking out three Rangers on Tuesday to improve to 4-4 on the season. He had a 4.56 ERA heading into Tuesday's start, but his 2.84 xFIP suggests that he's been unlucky, and perhaps this strong outing is a sign that his luck is changing. His 9.85 K/9 rate and sub-1.30 WHIP are certainly worth noting if you're scouring the waiver wire looking for cheap starting pitching.
Jun 5 2013Kluber surrendered six runs (four earned) over six innings while striking out eight in Wednesday's loss to the Yankees. The Yankees did most of their damage against Kluber, scoring all of their runs in the game's first two innings. He allowed only three baserunners over the last 5.1 innings to end things on an encouraging note, but with his next start coming against a quality Rangers lineup in Arlington, he might be worth avoiding in spite of the excellent strikeout totals he's been posting.
May 21 2013Kluber gave up three earned runs on eight hits while striking out eight and walking none in 6.1 innings against the Tigers on Tuesday.Kluber retired Miguel Cabrera his first two times through the Tigers' order, but predictably, the third time was the charm for the slugger, as he belted a two-run shot to put Kluber on the hook for the loss. His 5.19 ERA and 1.38 WHIP are inflated from his previous start against the Tigers, an eight-run/11-hit thumping on May 10, and he's shown enough early in the season to be worth consideration for future spot starts, although Sunday's matchup in Boston isn't very ideal.
May 15 2013Kluber rebounded from a disastrous start against the Tigers last week by holding the Phillies to three runs over six innings Wednesday afternoon.Kluber's performance Wednesday harkened back to his first start of 2013, in the fact that he did not walk a batter. At times Kluber's control has plagued him, but he has shown he can be successful if he keeps his walks down. Kluber's next start will come next week against the Tigers.
May 10 2013Kluber was hammered by the powerful Detroit offense, allowing eight runs on 11 hits, walking two and striking out four over 4.2 innings of a 10-4 loss Friday night. He joins a growing list of pitchers who have been abused by the Tigers this year, but with Brett Myers due back off the disabled list soon, Kluber needed a solid outing to maintain a grasp on a rotation spot, and this couldn't have helped his cause. He'll carry an ugly 5.64 ERA into his next start in Philadelphia.
May 5 2013Kluber yielded three runs on five hits and four walks, while punching out five in 5.2 innings, as Cleveland's quasi-rally fell short Sunday against Minnesota. After two steady relief appearances in mid-April, Kluber took over the rotation spot left vacant by Brett Myers (forearm). Kluber, who narrowly missed notching back-to-back quality starts, has exhibited fine control outside of Sunday's four free passes, posting a 16:4 K:BB ratio in 17.2 innings this season. He'll next toe the rubber Friday in Detroit, where he's allowed six earned runs over eight career frames.
Apr 28 2013Kluber earned his second victory of the year against the Royals on Sunday as he went seven innings, giving up two earned runs on seven hits while striking out six.Kluber was in control the whole way, and lowered his ERA to 2.25. He should continue to get opportunities to start as the Indians fifth starter with Brett Myers currently on the DL.
Apr 26 2013Kluber is expected to start Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Royals, MLB.com's Jordan Bastian reports. The Indians will play the twin bill in light of Friday's rainout. Apr 21 2013Kluber will take Brett Myers' (forearm) spot in the rotation and start Wednesday against the White Sox.Kluber figures to be in line for at least three starts while Myers is on the disabled list, giving him a chance to parlay his early season success into a regular starting role if team determines he's a better rotation fit than Myers or Scott Kazmir. Nov 30 2012Kluber underwent right knee surgery Friday, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. The injury occurred while Kluber was playing with his daughter. The Indians could push him up to Triple-A soon, and there's a shot he'll get a brief audition in the majors during the last month or so.
