Feb 21 2024Hosmer announced Wednesday via social media that he has retired from professional baseball. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In addition to confirming his retirement, Hosmer also announced the creation of his own media company, which will host his podcast. The 34-year-old's decision to bring an end to his playing days wasn't unexpected, as Hosmer had been a free agent since being released by the Cubs last May. A four-time Gold Glove winner and one-time All-Star, Hosmer ends his career with a lifetime .276/.335/.427 slash line to go with 198 home runs, 893 RBI, 812 runs and 76 stolen bases over 1,689 games across 13 seasons with the Royals, Padres, Red Sox and Cubs. He won his only World Series title with Kansas City in 2015.
May 19 2023Hosmer was designated for assignment by the Cubs on Friday, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 33-year-old first baseman was slashing just .234/.280/.330 through 31 games (100 plate appearances) this season and had barely seen the field since the promotion of Matt Mervis. Hosmer is still owed about $32 million on his contract, but the Padres are on the hook for the majority of that. Chicago signed him to a deal worth the MLB minimum in January.
May 5 2023Cubs manager David Ross confirmed Friday that Hosmer will serve in a bench role moving forward, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer's move to the bench comes in the wake of the Cubs calling up top prospect Matt Mervis from Triple-A Iowa. Mervis will start at first base Friday against the Marlins in his MLB debut, and he's expected to operate as the Cubs' primary option at that spot while Trey Mancini serves as the team's designated hitter. Hosmer has retained his spot on the roster for now, but it's difficult to see him fitting with the Cubs over the long haul with Mervis now around.
May 4 2023With top prospect Matt Mervis expected to get called up from Triple-A Iowa on Friday, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.com, Hosmer could be in danger of losing playing time. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mervis is expected to see everyday playing time between first base and designated hitter, which could squeeze Hosmer out of the lineup more regularly, The latter has an uninspiring .657 OPS and only two home runs over 26 games, so it makes sense that the Cubs want to promote the powerful Mervis, who has a .924 OPS at Triple-A. Hosmer's fantasy value could be in line to take a significant hit.
May 1 2023Hosmer is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With a lefty (MacKenzie Gore) on the bump for Washington, the lefty-hitting Hosmer will hit the bench in the series opener. Trey Mancini will replace Hosmer at first base.
Apr 28 2023Hosmer is not in the starting lineup Friday versus the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With left-hander Jesus Luzardo on the mound for the Marlins, Hosmer will take a seat. Trey Mancini will take over at first base while Nelson Velazquez enters the lineup at designated hitter and bats ninth in the series opener.
Apr 27 2023Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's 5-2 win over the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer hit his second home run of the season in the second inning, which is a good sign in what's been an underwhelming start to his time with the Cubs. The first baseman has a .655 OPS, which would be a new career low. Hosmer simply isn't hitting for much power any more, as he recorded a career-worst eight home runs in 104 games last year and only has the two long balls so far this year.
Apr 2 2023Hosmer is out of the lineup for Sunday's game versus the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer manned first base in the first two games of the season but will head to the bench Sunday after he went 0-for-7 with two strikeouts. Trey Mancini will move to first base while Luis Torrens serves as the designated hitter in the series finale.
Mar 12 2023Hosmer has gone 6-for-21 (.286) in Cactus League action so far, though five of those hits have been singles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer has one double and no home runs in spring training. The consistent contact has been encouraging, but the lack of power could last into the regular season, as the first baseman hit a career-low eight long balls last year in 104 games. Hosmer should see regular playing time for the Cubs, and he'll have some fantasy value if he maintains a high average, though fantasy managers will surely want to see an uptick in home runs.
Jan 4 2023Hosmer and the Cubs agreed to a contract Wednesday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The exact terms of Hosmer's deal with Chicago aren't clear, but the 33-year-old is presumably joining the Cubs on a short-term pact with the expectation that he settles in as the team's Opening Day first baseman. The addition of Hosmer could hurt top prospect Matt Mervis' chances of breaking camp with the big club, though Mervis could still be an option at the Cubs' unsettled designated-hitter spot. While splitting time between San Diego and Boston in 2022, Hosmer slashed a pedestrian .268/.334/.382 with a career-low eight home runs to go with 44 RBI and 38 runs.
Dec 22 2022Hosmer was released by the Red Sox on Thursday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 33-year-old was designated for assignment by the Red Sox last week and will now hit the open market. Hosmer appeared in 104 games last season between Boston and San Diego, and he had a .268/.334/.382 slash line with eight home runs, 44 RBI and 38 runs scored.
Dec 16 2022Hosmer was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Red Sox were only on the hook for the veteran minimum portion of Hosmer's salary after acquiring him at the trade deadline from the Padres. However, they've ultimately decided his 40-man roster spot is best used on another player, and he'll presumably be released after clearing waivers. Hosmer has posted a .725 OPS with 20 home runs over the last two seasons. With Hosmer out of the picture, Triston Casas has a clear path to the first base job.
Nov 8 2022Hosmer opted into the final three years and $39 million of his contract Tuesday, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer signed an eight-year deal with the Padres prior to the 2018 season. While the contract allowed him to return to the open market after five years, his downturn in performance means that wouldn't be a wise move. Since signing the contract, he's hit .265/.325/.409. That's good for a league-average 100 wRC+, a mark that isn't good enough for a starting first baseman.
Oct 3 2022The Red Sox reinstated Hosmer (back) from the 10-day injured list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a 38-game absence due to low-back inflammation, Hosmer will make his return to the Red Sox for the team's final three games of the regular season. The veteran won't be a lock to start all three games for Boston, as the Red Sox may prefer to stick with top prospect Triston Casas as their primary starter at first base.
Oct 2 2022Hosmer (back) will be activated from the 10-day injured list Monday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He's been on the shelf since Aug. 20 with back inflammation. Hosmer, who is under contract through 2025, has hit .267/.333/.381 with eight home runs in 102 games with the Padres and Red Sox this season. He hasn't played in any rehab games, but he has been hitting off the machine at Fenway Park. The Red Sox have Triston Casas and Bobby Dalbec already as options at first base and J.D. Martinez at designated hitter, so it's unclear how much action he will see over the final three days of the season.
Sep 28 2022Hosmer (back) is scheduled to take live at-bats against Kutter Crawford (shoulder) in a simulated game Tuesday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though manager Alex Cora hinted earlier this month that Hosmer could face an uphill battle to play again in 2022 while he contends with low-back inflammation, the veteran first baseman has apparently turned a corner in his recovery in recent days. Depending on how he responds to facing live pitching, Hosmer could be activated from the 10-day injured list by the end of the week, according to Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican. Once activated, Hosmer will likely share playing time at first base with top prospect Triston Casas.
Sep 25 2022Manager Alex Cora said Sunday that Hosmer (back) will return to action by the end of the season, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was reported in early September the 32-year-old wasn't expected to retake the field this year with Boston out of playoff contention, but it appears that is no longer the case. Assuming Hosmer is in fact activated down the stretch, it's unclear how playing time will break down at first base between him and prospect Triston Casas.
Sep 10 2022Hosmer (back) is not participating in baseball activities, and Red Sox manager Alex Cora said time is running out for a return in 2022. "He hasn't done much baseball-wise the last few days," Cora said. "We're kind of running out of time." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer has been on the injured list since Aug. 23, but a final decision hasn't been made about shutting him down. All signs point to his season being over, including Boston's call-up of top prospect Triston Casas.
Sep 5 2022Hosmer (back) hasn't officially been shut down from baseball activities for the remainder of the 2022 campaign, but the Red Sox aren't expected to activate him from the 10-day injured list before the season ends in early October, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Alex Cora most recently updated Hosmer's situation Friday, when the skipper noted that the veteran first baseman suffered lingering pain in his back while swinging the bat recently and is scheduled to receive treatment over the next several days, per MLB.com. Hosmer could restart activities if he responds well to treatment, but the Red Sox's decision to promote top prospect Triston Casas to the majors Sunday seemingly indicates that the 32-year-old won't be rushed back to action. After being acquired from the Padres on Aug. 2, Hosmer batted .225 with three doubles and no home runs in 12 games before going on the injured list three weeks later.
Sep 1 2022Manager Alex Cora said Thursday that Hosmer has been shut down due to lingering back pain, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer has been on the injured list with low-back inflammation for just over a week, but he had recently resumed swinging. It's not yet clear how long his shutdown will last, but he'll likely need to spend more than the minimum of 10 days on the shelf. A better idea of his return timetable should come into focus once he resumes baseball activities.
Aug 29 2022Manager Alex Cora said Monday that Hosmer (back) has resumed swinging, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer has been swinging off a tee and against soft toss, and the Red Sox hope that he'll be able to begin a rehab assignment by the end of this week. If the 32-year-old is cleared to join a minor-league affiliate to close out the week, it seems likely that he'll return from the injured list in early September.
Aug 23 2022Hosmer was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with low-back inflammation, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer's placement on the IL is retroactive to Sunday, so he'll be eligible for activation as soon as Aug. 31. The Red Sox called up Franchy Cordero from Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move, and he'll likely fill the large side of a platoon at first base with Bobby Dalbec while Hosmer is on the shelf.
Aug 21 2022Hosmer (back) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Orioles, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer will get some extra maintenance Sunday after he exited Saturday's 4-3 win with lower-back pain. With Hosmer on the bench, Bobby Dalbec will pick up a start at first base.
Aug 20 2022Hosmer exited Saturday's game against the Orioles with lower-back pain, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This is the same issue that caused Tommy Pham to exit Friday's game, so the Red Sox are temporarily short-handed. Bobby Dalbec figures to see an uptick in playing time for as long as Hosmer is bothered by this back issue.
Aug 18 2022Hosmer is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Bobby Dalbec will step in at first base while Hosmer gets a breather in the series finale. Since arriving in Boston in an Aug. 2 trade with the Padres, Hosmer has gone 7-for-34 (.206 average) with three doubles, four walks, five runs and three RBI in his first 10 games with the Red Sox.
Aug 12 2022Hosmer went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer, who had missed the last two games due to a back injury, provided the key hit in the bottom of the sixth inning. His double plated home J.D. Martinez from first base to give Boston a 4-3 lead a half inning after Baltimore tied the game. Hosmer finds himself in a potentially good spot with the Red Sox. Boston's production at first base this season has been dismal, so he has a path to consistent playing time. Additionally, he's a career .356 hitter at Fenway Park.
Aug 11 2022Hosmer (knee) is starting at first base and batting sixth Thursday against the Orioles, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer sat out Wednesday after suffering the knee bruise during Tuesday's contest, but he'll rejoin the lineup after missing only one game. The 32-year-old is 2-for-12 with two doubles, an RBI and three runs through his first four games with the Red Sox.
Aug 10 2022Hosmer (knee) isn't starting Wednesday's game against Atlanta, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer exited Tuesday's game against Atlanta due to a bruised left knee, and he wasn't expected to be in Wednesday's lineup. Bobby Dalbec will start at first base and bat eighth.
Aug 9 2022Hosmer was removed from Tuesday's game against Atlanta with a bruised left knee, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer fouled a pitch off himself during the fourth inning and initially stayed in to finish the plate appearance, though he was replaced in the field for the following frame. According to Alex Speier of The Boston Globe, manager Alex Cora said the veteran first baseman is "very sore" and isn't expected to play Wednesday.
Aug 6 2022Hosmer will sit Saturday against the Royals, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer will sit against lefty Daniel Lynch here, but he started against southpaw Kris Bubic on Thursday, so he won't necessarily be locked into a platoon role down the stretch. Bobby Dalbec starts at first base in his absence.
Aug 4 2022Boston activated Hosmer (neck) on Thursday and will deploy him as its starting first baseman and No. 6 hitter in the team's series opener in Kansas City, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Before he was dealt to Boston on Tuesday, Hosmer had missed his last game as a member of the Padres due to a neck strain. The injury was never considered anything more than a minor issue, and Hosmer should be poised to take over as the Boston's everyday first baseman moving forward. The righty-hitting Bobby Dalbec may occasionally spell Hosmer against left-handed pitching, but the quality defense Hosmer brings at first base might still be enough for him to earn regular work versus southpaws, as will be the case Thursday with Kris Bubic on the hill for Kansas City.
Aug 3 2022Hosmer (neck) isn't starting Wednesday against the Astros, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer was traded from the Padres to the Red Sox on Tuesday and is expected to see plenty of playing time once he's healthy, but he won't make his team debut Wednesday. He remains day-to-day with a neck strain for now, and Bobby Dalbec will start at first base and bat seventh Wednesday.
Aug 2 2022The Red Sox acquired Hosmer (neck) from the Padres on Tuesday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Boston will also receive prospects Max Ferguson and Corey Rosier along with cash in the deal while sending left-hander Jay Groome to San Diego, according to Robert Murray of FanSided.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer was initially included in the agreed-upon deal earlier Tuesday that sent Juan Soto and Josh Bell from the Nationals to the Padres, but Hosmer exercised his no-trade clause to block a move to Washington. San Diego opted to explore alternative trade options for Hosmer and found a willing partner in Boston. According to Jeff Passan of ESPN.com, the Padres will cover most of the $44 million remaining on the final three-plus seasons on Hosmer's contract, so Boston won't be receiving any significant prospect capital as a sweetener in the deal. Though Hosmer's .727 OPS over 369 plate appearances this season has rendered him a low-end starting first baseman from a production standpoint, he brings quality defense to the position and should be at least a slight offensive upgrade for the Red Sox over the platoon of Franchy Cordero and Bobby Dalbec. Hosmer is currently tending to a strained neck, but the injury isn't believed to be a major concern.
Aug 1 2022Hosmer (neck) isn't in the lineup Monday against the Rockies, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer was removed from Sunday's game against the Twins due to a neck strain and will be out of the lineup for at least one matchup. Whether he's available off the bench remains to be seen, but Wil Myers will start at first base while Nomar Mazara starts in right field.
Jul 31 2022Hosmer exited Sunday's game against the Twins due to a neck strain, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer went 0-for-3 with a strikeout to begin Sunday's matchup, but he was replaced defensively ahead of the seventh inning. It's not yet clear whether he'll be forced to miss additional time, but Luke Voit and Jurickson Profar will likely see increased looks at first base if Hosmer is sidelined.
Jul 29 2022Hosmer went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk and two runs scored in Friday's 10-1 win over the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer stretched the Padres' lead to 4-1 in the fourth inning. Since the All-Star break, the first baseman has gone 8-for-22 (.364) with two homers and five RBI. He's slashing .277/.341/.399 with eight long balls, 40 RBI, 31 runs scored and 16 doubles through 88 contests as a near-everyday presence in the middle of the lineup.
Jul 27 2022Hosmer isn't starting Wednesday against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer started the last six games and slashed .364/.417/.591 with a home run, two doubles, four RBI and two runs over that span. Luke Voit is starting at first base while Matt Batten enters the lineup at the hot corner.
Jul 25 2022Hosmer went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI in Sunday's 8-5 loss to the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning with his 16th double of the season, which plated Nomar Mazara. The veteran first baseman enjoyed a productive series in New York, going 5-for-12 with a home run, a pair of doubles, a walk and four RBI.
Jul 23 2022Hosmer went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double and a two-run home run in Friday's 4-1 win over the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: His fourth-inning blast off Max Scherzer got the Padres on the board and gave Yu Darvish and the San Diego bullpen all the support they would need. Hosmer snapped an 18-game homer drought with the performance, a stretch during which he batted only .231 (15-for-65) with two doubles, but on the season he still carries a solid .275/.338/.392 slash line with seven home runs and 37 RBI through 83 contests.
Jul 16 2022Hosmer isn't starting Saturday against the Diamondbacks, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer is getting a chance to rest after he went 2-for-10 with two RBI, three walks and a strikeout over the last three games. Jake Cronenworth is shifting to first base while Matt Batten starts at the keystone.
Jul 12 2022Hosmer is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rockies, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer will head to the bench for the second time in the past four games with lefty Austin Gomber pitching for Colorado. Luke Voit will shift to first base while Jorge Alfaro serves as the designated hitter.
Jul 9 2022Hosmer isn't starting Saturday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer started in the last five games and went 5-for-19 with a run, an RBI and three strikeouts. Luke Voit is starting at first base while Jorge Alfaro serves as the designated hitter Saturday.
Jul 2 2022Hosmer isn't starting Saturday's game against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer will get a chance to reset after he went 0-for-6 over the last two games. Luke Voit is starting at first base while Jorge Alfaro serves as the designated hitter Saturday.
Jun 23 2022Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's 6-2 loss to the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer has homered in each of his last two games after going 32 contests without a long ball for much of May and June. The first baseman is up to six homers, 31 RBI, 25 runs scored, 12 doubles and a .282/.346/.407 slash line through 64 contests overall. While his power is getting back on track, he's batting just .197 (14-for-71) in June, so he'll need to improve his overall approach at the plate.
Jun 22 2022Hosmer is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer will sit out for the day game after he played all 11 innings in Tuesday night's 3-2 win while going 1-for-4 with a solo home run and a walk. Luke Voit, who typically serves as San Diego's designated hitter, will replace Hosmer at first base.
Jun 21 2022Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and a walk in Tuesday's 3-2 extra-innings win over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer tied the game at 2-2 with his sixth-inning blast. This was his first extra-base hit in seven games and his first homer since May 11. The first baseman has cooled off noticeably in June -- his batting average has dropped 40 points since the start of the month, and he now has a .278/.344/.392 slash line in 63 contests. He's added five homers, 30 RBI, 24 runs scored and 12 doubles.
Jun 17 2022Hosmer isn't in the lineup for Friday's game against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer drew starts in the last five games and went 5-for-18 with a double, five runs and four RBI. However, Luke Voit will start at first base while Sergio Alcantara enters the lineup at the hot corner Friday.
Jun 11 2022Hosmer will sit for the second half of Saturday's doubleheader against the Rockies, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer started against righty Ryan Feltner in the first game of the day and went 1-for-3. With lefty Kyle Freeland on the mound for the nightcap, he'll hit the bench. Luke Voit starts at first base as Manny Machado rests his legs in Voit's usual designated hitter spot.
Jun 8 2022Hosmer is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mets, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer has a .310 OPS over his past nine games and will head to the bench for Wednesday's contest. Luke Voit will take over at first base while Manny Machado rests his legs as the designated hitter.
Jun 4 2022Hosmer isn't in Saturday's lineup against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer started in the last three games and went 2-for-14 with a double, an RBI and three strikeouts. Jake Cronenworth will shift to first base while Sergio Alcantara starts at the keystone Saturday.
May 31 2022Hosmer will sit Tuesday against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer sits for just the fourth time this season. Unlike his other three absences, this one comes against a righty in Adam Wainwright. Jake Cronenworth slides to first base in Hosmer's absence, with Robinson Cano starting at second base.
May 25 2022Hosmer went 2-for-3 with a walk in Tuesday's 4-1 loss to the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After reaching base three times on the night, Hosmer's on-base average sits at a robust .392 through 40 games on the season. He's propped up the OBA with a .327 batting average, but his production in the other four main rotisserie categories still leaves something to be desired. Despite playing in all but three of the Padres' games this season, Hosmer has provided only four home runs, 24 RBI, 16 runs and zero stolen bases.
May 21 2022Hosmer is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against San Francisco. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer has ridden a career-best 14.5 percent strikeout rate to a .324/.382/.849 slash line so far this season. He's still pounding the ball into the ground as much as ever, resulting in a 4.3 percent barrel rate and a modest four homers, but his season should finish as one of his most productive ever if he can continue making this much contact. The veteran will get his first day off in over a month Saturday, with Luke Voit starting at first base and Jurickson Profar resting his legs as the designated hitter.
May 14 2022Hosmer went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI in an 11-6 win over the Braves on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran first baseman knocked in a pair of runs with a fifth-inning single, and he scored in each of the seventh and ninth innings. This was the second straight three-hit game and third consecutive multi-hit performance for Hosmer, who has gone 8-for-14 with a homer and five RBI during the hot stretch. He leads the league with a .377 average on the season, just ahead of teammate Manny Machado's .371 mark.
May 11 2022Hosmer went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and two RBI in the loss to the Cubs on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer singled and drove in a run in the first inning and then launched a solo homer off Mychal Givens in the seventh frame. He later added another single. The long ball was Hosmer's fourth of the season and first since April 30. The first baseman also put together his second straight multi-hit effort and his season slash line now sits at .367/.434/.550, all of which are career bests. In what has been a resurgent season for Hosmer, he has four homers, 21 RBI and 13 runs over 109 at-bats in 30 games.
May 5 2022Hosmer went 2-for-6 with three walks, a double, three RBI and a run during Wednesday's doubleheader split versus Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer was particularly productive in Game 1 of the twin bill, when he reached base four times and drove in a pair. The veteran extended his on-base streak to nine games in the second contest, and he is slashing .414/.564/.759 with three homers, 12 RBI and seven runs over that stretch. Hosmer leads MLB with a .378 average and .457 on-base percentage this season.
May 1 2022Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Saturday's loss to the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Padres were held scoreless through three innings before Hosmer delivered a three-run shot in the fourth to give his team a brief lead. The long ball was his third in the past five games after he failed to go deep through his first 15 contests of the campaign. The power surge has added value to an already impressive season for Hosmer -- he leads MLB with a .389 average and is tied for third with 28 hits.
Apr 26 2022Hosmer went 2-for-3 with two walks and a three-run home run in Tuesday's win over the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer broke the game open for San Diego with his homer off lefty Reiver Sanmartin in the top of the fourth inning, his first long ball of the year. With a .390 average in the early going, Hosmer currently leads baseball in that department, but he had a .457 BABIP entering Tuesday's game and had previously provided very little in terms of extra-base power.
Apr 18 2022Hosmer will be on the bench Monday against the Reds, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer will sit against lefty Nick Lodolo, meaning he's now been out of the lineup against two of the four lefties the Padres have faced this season. Luke Voit will play first base, with Austin Nola serving as the designated hitter.
Apr 14 2022Hosmer went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and a run in Thursday's 12-1 win over the Braves. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer put the Padres on the board in the first inning with a two-run single, and he went on to rack up three more hits in the contest. This was the veteran's fourth multi-hit performance in seven games so far this season, pushing his average to .462. Hosmer is tied for the MLB lead with 12 hits overall on the campaign.
Apr 10 2022Hosmer is out of the lineup for Sunday's game at Arizona. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer is 6-for-12 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs through the first three games of the season, but he'll take a seat Sunday with southpaw Caleb Smith pitching for the Diamondbacks. Luke Voit will start at first base while Austin Nola serves as the designated hitter in the series finale.
Apr 8 2022Hosmer went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs in a 3-0 win against the Diamondbacks on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer and teammate Jurickson Profar carried San Diego's offense Friday, with Hosmer recording hits in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings and runs in the latter two innings. If the veteran first baseman continues to hit like this, he should lock up a significant role in a valuable Padres lineup.
Apr 5 2022Hosmer slashed .200/.259/.280 with two doubles, two RBI and a 2:3 BB:K over 27 plate appearances in Cactus League action. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer didn't make many waves at the plate this spring, though his presence in trade discussions generated plenty of noise. For now, the veteran is slated to start frequently at first base for San Diego, though the team's addition of Luke Voit -- who could spend most of his time as the DH -- figures to cut into Hosmer's playing time to some extent. Hosmer's 12 home runs last year were his fewest in a non-shortened season since 2014.
Oct 3 2021Hosmer is out of the lineup Sunday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer finds himself on the bench for the second straight game to close out the season for the Padres. The 31-year-old could still make an appearance off the bench Sunday, but if not he'll end 2021 with a .270/.337/.396 slash line, 12 homers, 65 RBI and 53 runs in 564 plate appearances.
Oct 2 2021Hosmer will be on the bench Saturday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer owns a strong .991 OPS over his last nine games, though his season-long .270/.338/.396 remains disappointing for a first baseman. Jake Cronenworth will start in that spot Saturday.
Sep 26 2021Hosmer will sit Sunday against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer's playing time has slipped recently, as he now finds himself on the bench for the fourth time in eight games. His .268/.336/.396 season slash line is good for a modest 102 wRC+, not a good enough number for an everyday first baseman on a team that was trying to contend. Jake Cronenworth will start in his absence.
Sep 24 2021Hosmer isn't starting the second game of Friday's twin bill against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer appeared in the conclusion of the suspended game Friday, but he'll retreat to the bench in the nightcap. Jake Cronenworth will start at first base while Tommy Pham enters the lineup in left field.
Sep 23 2021Hosmer went 4-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 8-6 win over the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer's four hits didn't translate to much on the scoreboard, as he was left on base three of the four times he reached. He did double in the ninth and finally scored as the Padres made a mini-comeback to make things interesting but largely wasn't rewarded for his efforts at the plate. The 31-year-old has just one home run since Aug. 9, which is something that's been missing from his game this season after he averaged anywhere from 18-25 home runs from 2015-19. For the year, Hosmer is slashing .271/.340/.395 with 11 long balls, 63 RBI, 50 runs scored, five steals and 45:93 BB:K over 531 plate appearances.
Sep 21 2021Hosmer isn't starting Tuesday's game against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer went 0-for-3 with two RBI, a walk and a strikeout Sunday, but he'll retreat to the bench for the second time in the last three games. Jake Cronenworth will shift to first base while Jurickson Profar starts in right field.
Sep 18 2021Hosmer is not in Saturday's lineup against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer has started each of the last seven games, during which time he's hit .250/.276/.357. While it's not out of the ordinary for Hosmer to draw a day off, Jake Cronenworth returned to the lineup after a week-long absence and is starting at first base. If the Padres continue to play Cronenworth at first base and keep Fernando Tatis at shortstop -- he is starting there Saturday -- Hosmer's playing time could dip significantly to close the season.
Sep 10 2021Hosmer is not starting Friday against the Dodgers, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer will sit for the third time in five games against lefty Julio Urias. Jurickson Profar draws the start at first base and will bat sixth.
Sep 7 2021Hosmer is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer will head to the bench for the second time in the last three contests, with both times out of the lineup coming against a left-handed pitcher. Jurickson Profar will start at first base in his place Tuesday.
Aug 31 2021Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and a walk in Monday's 7-5 win over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer went deep off Matt Peacock in the seventh inning to extend the Padres' lead to five runs. In addition, he was intentionally walked in the ninth inning. It was his first home run since Aug. 9. The 31-year-old is slashing .268/.336/.390 with 11 long balls, 56 RBI, 47 runs and five steals in 474 plate appearances.
Aug 10 2021Hosmer went 2-for-3 with a home run, an additional RBI, two additional runs scored and a walk in Monday's win over the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer had an excellent all-around performance Monday and reached base three times while also being responsible for five of the team's eight runs across the board. The first baseman is hitting .279 with a .744 OPS on the season. Hosmer has gone hit less just once since June 25, a span of 13 games.
Aug 7 2021Hosmer went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, walk and strikeout in the Padres 6-2 win against the Diamondbacks on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer took Taylor Widener yard in the second for his first long ball since July 18 and later walked in the fourth for his second game this month reaching base multiple times. The first baseman is slashing a decent .275/.339/.391 though the slugging is Hosmer's lowest since 2012.
Aug 1 2021Hosmer is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer will take a seat for the second time in five games, and more frequent off days look to be in his future following the acquisition of Adam Frazier. Though the Padres recently moved an everyday player in Fernando Tatis (shoulder) to the injured list, Jake Cronenworth and Frazier aren't expected to settle in as replacements for the superstar shortstop. Instead, rookie Ha-Seong Kim is expected to be installed as the primary shortstop in Tatis' stead, so Hosmer will continue to vie with Cronenworth for work at first base.
Jul 28 2021Hosmer is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Athletics, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Padres' recent addition of Adam Frazier may not result in Hosmer losing out on steady work against right-handed pitching, but the lefty-hitting first baseman should find himself on the bench regularly versus lefties like Oakland's Sean Manaea, who is on the bump for the series finale. Jake Cronenworth will bump over from second base to cover first base in place of Hosmer, whom the Padres could be eager to move ahead of Friday's trade deadline if they can find a team willing to cover a portion of the money remaining on his eight-year, $144 million contact. That could be a tough task, given that Hosmer's .707 OPS is the second-lowest mark among the 25 qualified first basemen in MLB this season.
Jul 26 2021Hosmer could be in the lineup less frequently following the Padres' trade for Adam Frazier, Alden Gonzalez of ESPN reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer has already been seeing a reduction in playing time of late, particularly when the team goes up against a left-handed starter (despite the fact that he is faring slightly better against southpaws this season). Though the recently acquired Frazier is expected to be used at second base and in the outfield, his addition could result in All-Star Jake Cronenworth sliding over to play first base in place of Hosmer more frequently. Hosmer has been decent but unspectacular offensively this season, slashing .265/.327/.378 with eight homers, 49 RBI and five stolen bases across 93 games.
Jul 24 2021Hosmer will be on the bench against lefty Braxton Garrett and the Marlins on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer has begun to see his playing time reduced, as he's now been on the bench against each of the last three lefties the Padres have faced. It's hard to say he deserves to start every day, as his .266/.329/.381 slash line simply isn't good enough for a first baseman. Jurickson Profar, who's hitting just .236/.338/.315 himself, will start at that position Saturday.
Jul 21 2021Hosmer isn't starting the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer has gone 4-for-10 with a home run, a double, six RBI, four runs, a stolen base and four walks in four games since the All-Star break. He'll get a breather for Wednesday's matinee with left-hander Kyle Muller on the mound for Atlanta. Jake Cronenworth will shift to first base while Ha-Seong Kim starts at the keystone.
Jul 18 2021Hosmer went 1-for-3 with a three-run homer, a walk and a strikeout in Sunday's 8-7 loss to the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer capped off a productive series following the All-Star break by putting the Padres on the board with his eighth home run of the season in the top of the fourth inning Sunday. Across the last three games, the 31-year-old has gone 4-for-7 with two extra-base hits, six RBI, four runs and a stolen base.
Jul 17 2021Hosmer will be on the bench against lefty Patrick Corbin and the Nationals on Saturday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer still has something larger than a platoon role at first base for the Padres, though he's now been on the bench against four of the last eight lefties the team has faced. Jake Cronenworth slides to first base in his absence, with Ha-Seong Kim starting at second.
Jul 16 2021Hosmer went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, three RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored in Friday's 24-8 win over Washington. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The first baseman provided an RBI single in the first inning, then executed a double steal that saw Tommy Pham steal home. Hosmer added an RBI single in the second and an RBI double in the fourth. The 31-year-old has found a groove in July, going 17-for-41 (.415) with a home run, eight RBI and seven runs scored in his last 12 games. The surge has lifted his season slash line to .272/.330/.384 across 334 plate appearances.
Jul 11 2021Hosmer went 2-for-3 with two doubles in a 3-0 loss to the Rockies on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer doubled in the second and eighth innings but was stranded on both occasions as San Diego was shut out. It was the first baseman's first game with multiple extra-base hits since Opening Day, and Hosmer is now slashing .263/.321/.374 with 12 doubles and seven home runs on the season.
Jul 8 2021Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's loss to Washington. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer's homer in the sixth inning had little impact on the overall course of the game, as it merely reduced the Padres' deficit to eight runs. However, the long ball was a long-awaited sight for fantasy managers who roster the first baseman, as his previous homer had come back on June 17. Hosmer appears to be heating up at the plate -- he has three multi-hit games in his past four contests, going 6-for-14 with five RBI over the span.
Jul 5 2021Hosmer is not in the lineup Monday against the Nationals, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer is 6-for-18 with a double, three RBI and three runs over his past five games and will take a seat Monday. Jake Cronenworth will shift to first base while Ha-Seong Kim receives a start at the keystone.
Jun 30 2021Hosmer isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run and a strikeout prior to his ejection Tuesday, and he'll get a day off Wednesday. Jurickson Profar will start at first base and bat seventh.
Jun 29 2021Hosmer was ejected from Tuesday's game against the Reds, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored before being tossed during the seventh inning while arguing balls and strikes from the dugout. The 31-year-old should be back in the lineup Wednesday in Cincinnati after the early departure.
Jun 21 2021Hosmer will sit Monday against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's not hard to make the case that Hosmer should sit more frequently going forward. He hit a strong .287/.333/.517 in last year's shortened season but is hitting just .249/.308/.357 with six homers in 66 games so far this year. His resurgence in 2020 was driven in large part by his career-low 46.2 percent groundball rate, but he's gone back to pounding the ball into the ground this season, posting a 57.4 percent mark in that category. Jake Cronenworth will slide to first base in his absence, with Ha-Seong Kim starting at second.
Jun 17 2021Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Thursday's 6-4 win over Cincinnati. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The first baseman picked a great time to end his home run drought, as his game-tying two-run shot in the ninth inning was his first in 20 games. Hosmer remains in a bit of a cold stretch in June, going just 7-for-52 (.135) in his last 16 games. That's dragged his slash line down to .253/.312/.367 across 250 plate appearances this year. He's added six homers, 35 RBI, 21 runs scored and four stolen bases.
Jun 16 2021Hosmer isn't in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer had started each of the last four games, and he went 2-for-13 with a run, two walks and two strikeouts during that time. Jurickson Profar will take over at first base and bat sixth.
Jun 11 2021Hosmer is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer will sit despite the fact that it will be a righty, Jacob deGrom, on the mound for the Mets. Jake Cronenworth slides to first base in his absence with Ha-Seong Kim starting at second.
Jun 3 2021Hosmer isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Mets, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer will get a breather after he went 1-for-8 with a double and two strikeouts across his last two games. Jake Cronenworth will start at first base and bat third.
May 29 2021Hosmer (forearm) is starting Saturday's game against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer exited Friday's win over the Astros after he was hit by a pitch in the first inning, but he underwent X-rays that came back negative. He'll start at first base and bat fifth Saturday.
May 28 2021Hosmer was removed from Friday's game against the Astros in the second inning with an apparent arm injury, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer was hit by a pitch on the arm in the first inning, and he was replaced defensively by Jorge Mateo in the second frame. The exact nature and severity of Hosmer's injury aren't yet clear.
May 27 2021Hosmer went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run Thursday against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer took Trevor Richards yard in sixth inning to record his fifth homer of the season. It was his first long ball and only second extra-base hit since being activated off the COVID-19 injured list May 19. Despite the lack of power, he has reached base in six of eight games since and scored four runs while driving in eight. Overall, Hosmer is hitting .293/.350/.427 across 180 plate appearances this season.
May 19 2021Hosmer (undisclosed) was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list Wednesday. He'll start at first base and bat fifth in the Padres' series finale with the Rockies in San Diego. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer was placed on the injured list May 12 after he was deemed to be a close contact of someone who had tested positive for COVID-19. The 31-year-old should resume his role as San Diego's everyday first baseman going forward.
May 17 2021Hosmer is expected to return from the COVID-19 injured list Wednesday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer has been on the COVID-19 injured list for five days after being deemed a close contact of someone who had tested positive for the virus, but the fact that he's ready to return within a week indicates he never tested positive for the virus himself. He should resume his role as the Padres' everyday first baseman once he returns.
May 12 2021The Padres officially placed Hosmer on the COVID-19 injured list Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer's move to the IL was a formality after he was revealed Tuesday to have been a close contact of a person or persons who had tested positive for the virus. While the Padres wait for Hosmer to complete a quarantine period, the team could turn to Jake Cronenworth as its primary option at first base. He'll man the position in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Rockies, according to Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
May 11 2021Hosmer was placed on the COVID-19 injured list as a close contact Tuesday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 31-year-old went 1-for-4 with an RBI during Tuesday's win over the Rockies before being pulled from the contest. Wil Myers started in right field and was removed during the third inning after testing positive for the virus, with Fernando Tatis also producing a positive test earlier in the day. Hosmer joins Jurickson Profar and Jorge Mateo on the COVID-19 IL as close contacts, and all three should be able to return quickly if they can produce negative tests.
May 10 2021Hosmer went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI in Sunday's 11-1 victory over San Francisco. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran first baseman put the exclamation point on a four-run eighth inning with a run-scoring single to right field. Hosmer has four three-hit performances so far this season and is batting .307 overall while contributing four home runs, 20 RBI and three stolen bases.
May 8 2021Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Friday's loss to the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer came up with a clutch hit in the bottom of the sixth inning, launching a two-run shot to center field that tied the game 4-4. The long ball was his first since April 10 and fourth overall on the season. Hosmer is slashing .305/.376/.449 with 19 RBI overall.
May 3 2021Hosmer will be on the bench for Monday's game against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer will rest against southpaw Tyler Anderson, though he's not at any apparent risk of slipping into a platoon role, as he's sitting for just the third time in 30 games. Jake Cronenworth slides to first base in his absence, with Ha-Seong Kim starting at second.
May 2 2021Hosmer went 0-for-2 with a pair of walks, a stolen base and a run in Saturday's 6-2 win over the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Hosmer didn't get a hit in the contest, he reached base twice via walk. In the eighth inning, he successfully pulled off a double steal with Fernando Tatis, and both runners subsequently came around to score on a Jake Cronenworth single. Hosmer is certainly benefitting from the Padres' run-wild approach, notching three steals in 27 games only two years removed from a campaign during which he did not swipe a single bag in 160 contests.
Apr 26 2021Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a walk, a run scored and two RBI in Sunday's 8-7 win over the Dodgers in 11 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer capped the Padres' thrilling come-from-behind victory with the go-ahead sacrifice fly that plated Fernando Tatis in the top of the 11th. The first baseman also had a hand in the Padres' comeback from a six-run deficit earlier in the contest, driving home Tatis on an eighth-inning base knock. The run-scoring single snapped a six-game RBI drought for Hosmer.
Apr 18 2021Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, a stolen base and a run scored in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer did a little bit of everything for the Padres Sunday after resting Saturday. He knocked in his 13th and 14th RBI while picking up his second steal. The veteran has a hot bat, failing to record a hit in only two of his starts this year. He is batting .354 which leads the Padres in the early season.
Apr 17 2021Hosmer is out of the lineup Saturday against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 31-year-old started the last 12 games and has a .733 OPS during that stretch, and he'll take a seat Saturday with Clayton Kershaw starting for Los Angeles. Jurickson Profar will start at first base in Hosmer's place for the Friars.
Apr 13 2021Hosmer went 1-for-3 with two walks and an RBI in Tuesday's 8-4 loss to the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer registered a hit for the fourth consecutive game with an RBI single in the fourth. He managed to get on twice more via walk and also got to first after a fielder's choice and ended up taking second for his first steal of the year. The stolen base was a rarity, as Hosmer hasn't topped more than 10 steals in a season since 2013. He is rewarding fantasy managers with solid contact skills and a knack for getting on base. The 31-year-old is slashing .341/.438/.610 with three home runs, nine RBI and five runs scored and continues to be one of the most consistent hitters in the Padres' lineup.
Apr 11 2021Hosmer went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in the 7-4 victory over the Rangers on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer led off the fourth inning with a solo shot off Jordan Lyles to get the scoring started for the Padres. The veteran first baseman is slashing .355/.412/.710 with three home runs and eight RBI in eight games this season. Hosmer is poised for a nice season, batting cleanup in one of the most talented offenses in the league.
Apr 3 2021Hosmer will be on the bench against lefty Caleb Smith and the Diamondbacks on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer started against the left-handed Madison Bumgarner on Opening Day, but the Padres have a deep roster this season, so he won't get to play every day. Any off days he does get will likely come against lefties, and he'll get his first of the year already despite going 6-for-7 with a pair of homers in the first two games of the campaign. Jake Cronenworth slides to first base in his absence, opening up second base for Ha-Seong Kim's first MLB start.
Mar 22 2021Hosmer (illness) will start at first base and will bat third Monday in the Padres' Cactus League game against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer is back in action for the first time since Thursday after an illness kept him out for a few days. He's off to a 5-for-26 start to Cactus League play, but Hosmer's status as the Padres' everyday first baseman isn't in question.
Mar 20 2021Hosmer was scratched from Saturday's spring lineup against the Dodgers due to an illness, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer was initially slated to play first base and bat fourth Saturday, but he was sent home by the team since he was feeling nauseous. It's not yet clear when he'll be able to return. Jake Cronenworth will shift to first base against the Dodgers, while Ha-seong Kim will play second base and bat seventh.
Oct 3 2020Hosmer went 1-for-3 with a double, two RBI, one walk and one strikeout in Friday's Game 3 win against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer put the Padres on the board Friday with a double in the bottom of the fifth inning, and he brought in another run when he drew a walk in the bottom of the seventh inning. During the NL Wild Card Series, Hosmer went 2-for-12 with three RBI, one run, one walk and two strikeouts.
Sep 27 2020Hosmer is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mitch Moreland will take over at first base as Austin Nola serves as the DH against lefty Drew Smyly. Hosmer has been hitting since his return from a finger injury Sept. 19 (.280 average) and will end the regular season with a career-high slugging percentage after never previously clearing .500 in his career.
Sep 23 2020Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run during Wednesday's 5-2 loss to the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran first baseman went deep during the opening frame, but it was the only scoring the Friars were able to muster all day. Hosmer is now 3-for-15 with one homer, three RBI, one walk and five strikeouts in four games since returning from the injured list over the weekend.
Sep 19 2020Hosmer (finger) went 1-for-4 in Saturday's 4-1 loss to the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer batted fifth and played the whole game at first base. He missed nearly two weeks with a fractured finger. Hosmer figures to battle with Mitch Moreland and Tommy Pham for playing time at first base or as the designated hitter. Hosmer has a .287/.341/.533 slash line with eight homers, three stolen bases, 32 RBI and 20 runs scored in 32 games this year.
Sep 15 2020Hosmer (finger) took part in live batting practice on the field prior to Tuesday's game, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer worked out without a splint Monday, and he took a big step by participating in live batting practice Tuesday. A timetable for his return still hasn't been established, but he's making rapid progress. Mitch Moreland should continue to see work at first base while Hosmer is sidelined.
Sep 14 2020Hosmer was able to work out Monday without a splint to protect the fractured index finger on his left hand, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer was seen fielding grounders and taking part in some light throwing with a piece of tape over the injured digit. His ability to get in some on-field work minus the splint is a tangible sign of progress in his recovery, but the first baseman still isn't expected back from the 10-day injured list until the final week of the regular season in a best-case scenario. Mitch Moreland will continue to make most of the starts at first base for the Padres until Hosmer is deemed fit to play.
Sep 12 2020Hosmer (finger) fielded groundballs and stood in to see pitches during a bullpen session Friday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer is recovering from a fractured left finger suffered during a bunt attempt last Monday. He's not yet swinging a bat, but the Padres are optimistic that he can begin working at the team's alternate training site next week. That could set him on track to log some major-league at-bats before the end of the regular season.
Sep 8 2020Hosmer landed on the 10-day injured list with a broken finger Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The move was an expected one after the first baseman fractured his left index finger on a bunt attempt Monday. He's expected to have a chance to return in the final week of the regular season, though that might be only to get a few at-bats in as he prepares for the playoffs. Outfielder Abraham Almonte was recalled in a corresponding move.
Sep 7 2020Hosmer (finger) was diagnosed with a fractured left finger Monday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer exited Monday's contest after fouling a bunt attempt off his finger. The severity of the injury was originally unclear, though he was ultimately diagnosed with a fractured left index finger. With around three weeks remaining in the season, it's unclear if Hosmer will be able to return, though he will definitely miss a significant amount of time.
Sep 6 2020Hosmer was ejected in the eighth inning of Saturday's loss to Oakland for arguing a called third strike. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Prior to the ejection, Hosmer went 0-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. San Diego was down 8-1 at the time Hosmer was tossed, so his departure had little impact on the outcome of the game. The 30-year-old is unlikely to face further discipline.
Sep 3 2020Hosmer went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run, two additional runs scored and a walk in Wednesday's win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer notched his eighth long ball of the season in the top of the eighth inning, and he capped an eight-run inning by the Padres that pulled the game away for good. Hosmer also pushed his hitting streak to five games, a span in which he has hit .550 with two homers and a 1.559 OPS.
Aug 30 2020Hosmer went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer in Sunday's 13-2 win over the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer set the tone for Sunday's game early with his three-run blast in the first frame. The 30-year-old lefty owns a strong .290/.340/.570 slash line with 12 extra-base hits and 25 RBI.
Aug 28 2020Hosmer went 4-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI during Friday's win at Coors Field. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old was dominant at the plate, swatting a season-high four hits, including his fifth double of the season. Overall, he's batting .286/.341/.560 with 22 RBI and 16 runs scored across 25 games this year.
Aug 25 2020Hosmer went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's loss to the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer was late to the launch-angle party, but he's made an adjustment and it's paying off in a big way. He's added roughly 10 degrees to his average launch angle and in turn has added more than 130 points to his slugging percentage. The 30-year-old has also trimmed his K-rate back down and is even running a bit, so Year 3 in San Diego is looking a lot better than Years 1 and 2 did.
Aug 20 2020Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a grand slam, a stolen base and a walk during Thursday's victory over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a record-setting night for the Padres as Hosmer hit San Diego's fourth grand slam in as many nights, marking the first time in major league history that a team delivered gram slams in four consecutive nights. The 30-year-old took Kyle Gibson deep in the fifth inning, tallying his fifth home run of the season. He also singled and swiped his second bag of the year in the third. Across 18 games, Hosmer is averaging .250/.311/.554.
Aug 16 2020Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and a walk in Sunday's 5-4 loss to Arizona. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer got the Padres on the board with his game-tying shot in the sixth inning, giving him four homers on the season. He's sporting a .974 OPS with 13 RBI in 42 plate appearances.
Aug 14 2020Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Friday's 5-1 loss to the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer got on base with a single in the second inning and stole second for his first steal of the season. The first baseman had 67 career stolen bases from 2011 to 2018, but Hosmer went 0-for-3 on the basepaths in 2019. Friday's swipe was his first attempt of the season. He's added two homers, nine RBI and three runs scored in nine games this year.
Aug 13 2020Hosmer went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in a loss to the Dodgers on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer helped get San Diego off on the right foot by going back-to-back with Tommy Pham in the first inning. The long ball was Hosmer's second of the season and first since July 26. Since returning from the injured list Aug. 8, Hosmer has gone 2-for-16 with a pair of runs batted in.
Aug 12 2020Hosmer isn't in the lineup Wednesday against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer will take a seat for the second time in the past four games after going 1-for-8 with one RBI and two strikeouts over the past two contests. Jake Cronenworth will shift to first base with Jurickson Profar starting as the second baseman.
Aug 9 2020Hosmer is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old returned from the injured list Saturday and went 0-for-4 in his first game since July 28. There's been no indication Hosmer is still battling the gastrointestinal issues that put him on the shelf, so the team is likely just easing him back into the everyday role. Ty France will receive the start at first base Sunday for the Friars.
Aug 8 2020Hosmer (illness) went 0-for-4 in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer was unable to contribute to the offense in his first game in 10 days since he went on the injured list with gastrointestinal issues. The first baseman has five hits (one homer), seven RBI and two runs scored in four games this season.
Aug 4 2020Hosmer (illness) played catch on the field Tuesday, Annie Heilbrunn of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer's activity was certainly a good sign, as he's been out of action for a week due to gastritis. He'll be eligible to return from the injured list Saturday, and the Padres are optimistic that he'll be able to return that day, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Aug 1 2020Hosmer was placed on the 10-day injured list with gastritis Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The move was made retroactive to Wednesday, so Hosmer can return as soon as next Saturday, though it's not yet clear whether or not he's expected to do so. Jake Cronenworth and Ty France have deputized at first base in his absence.
Jul 31 2020Hosmer (illness) is not in the lineup for Friday's game at Colorado. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old has been a battling the non-COVID-19 illness since the start of the season and is now set to miss his fifth contest. Jake Cronenworth will handle duties at first base during Friday's series opener.
Jul 30 2020Hosmer (illness) isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer was a late scratch three times this week with a non-COVID-19 illness, but he won't be included in the initial lineup for Thursday's game against the Giants. Ty France will take over at first base and bat seventh.
Jul 29 2020Hosmer was scratched from Wednesday's lineup against the Giants with a non-COVID-19 illness, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's the third time during the first week of the season the veteran first baseman has been scratched with a non-COVID-19 illness. The specifics of the ailment remain unclear, so it's worth monitoring his status in case it continues to be an ongoing concern. Greg Garcia will enter the lineup at second base for the Friars, shifting Jake Cronenworth to first base.
Jul 28 2020Hosmer (illness) is in the starting lineup and batting fifth Tuesday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer was scratched from Monday's lineup with a non-COVID-19 illness, but he'll be able to rejoin the starting nine for the team's first game against the Giants. Hosmer has been hot to begin the season, going 4-for-6 with a home run, two doubles, seven RBI and four runs over his first three games.
Jul 27 2020Hosmer was scratched from Monday's lineup with a non-COVID-19 illness, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer was initially slated to start at first base and bat fifth in Monday's series finale against the Diamondbacks, but he'll be scratched for the second time in three games with a non-COVID-19 illness. Wil Myers will take Hosmer's place at first base, batting sixth.
Jul 26 2020Hosmer (illness) went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and two walks in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer opened the scoring with a third-inning solo shot off of Arizona starter Zac Gallen. Hosmer was later lifted for a pinch runner in the eighth. The 30-year-old first baseman has already racked up seven RBI in two games this season. He should continue to hold down a near-everyday role in the middle of the Padres' lineup.
Jul 25 2020Hosmer was scratched from Saturday's lineup against the Diamondbacks with a non-COVID-19 illness, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old was penciled in as the starter at first base, batting fifth, but he'll instead be out of the starting nine. He seems unlikely to be available off the bench, and it's unclear if he's expected to return to action Sunday. Ty France will step into the lineup for the Friars in his place.
Jul 24 2020Hosmer went 3-for-4 with a pair of three-run doubles in Friday's 7-2 win over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer's sixth-inning double opened a 3-0 lead for the Padres, and he repeated the feat an inning later. He's just the second first baseman to record six RBI on Opening Day in major-league history. Hosmer will need to watch his strikeout count -- he had a career-high 163 whiffs in 2019 -- but his performance Friday is an encouraging sign to start 2020.
Mar 22 2020Hosmer will open the season as the Padres' everyday first baseman but could find himself in a platoon if his struggles against southpaws continue, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Hosmer's hefty contract all but ensures that he'll receive regular playing time for the foreseeable future, the team could choose to lessen his exposure to left-handed pitching if Hosmer is unable to improve upon the .231 batting average and atrocious 59 wRC+ he registered against southpaws last season. Those numbers are hardly flukes; Hosmer was even worse in 2018, posting a .179 average and 45 wRC+ in 242 plate appearances against lefties. Per Cassavell, Wil Myers and Ty France are candidates to platoon with Hosmer at first base if the Padres ultimately decide to go in that direction.
Sep 28 2019Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 6-5 loss to the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer's blast came in the seventh inning against Diamondbacks reliever Jimmie Sherfy, giving the Padres a 5-1 lead at the time. The D'backs rallied for five runs in the bottom half of the inning however, and the Padres never caught up. Hosmer has swatted 22 homers and tallied 99 RBI and 72 runs scored in 159 games this year.
Sep 26 2019Hosmer is not in Thursday's lineup against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer is hitting just .183 with a .531 OPS through 22 games this month. He'll head to the bench for the second time in four games as the Padres play out the string. Seth Mejias-Brean is starting at first base and hitting fifth in Thursday's series finale.
Sep 22 2019Hosmer is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer will get just his third day off since the All-Star break. Wil Myers will cover first base Sunday in Hosmer's place.
Sep 19 2019Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's loss to the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer cut the Padres' deficit in half with a solo home run off Jordan Lyles in the fourth inning. The 29-year-old has tallied 21 long balls with a team-leading 96 RBI and 162 hits this season while batting .275/.322/.438.
Sep 11 2019Hosmer is not in Wednesday's lineup against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He is hitting .242 with zero home runs in nine games this month. Seth Mejias-Brean is starting at first base and hitting sixth.

Jul 23 2018Hosmer started both games of Sunday's doubleheader against the Phillies, going a combined 2-for-9 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored.Hosmer's production has really tailed off of late, posting an ugly .123/.147/.192 slash line with just three extra-base hits in 75 July plate appearances. The 28-year-old has generally been a consistent hitter over the course of his career, so fantasy owners will just have to write this off as a rough slump. Hosmer continues to bat in the heart of the Padres' lineup, so his counting stat production should rebound once his bat heats back up.
Jul 14 2018Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run Saturday against the Cubs.Hosmer went deep in the first inning against Kyle Hendricks to record his 10th home run of the season. It was his first home run and only fourth extra-base hit since June 12. That lack of power and poor team context have led to a very disappointing first-half performance for Hosmer.
Jul 1 2018Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a walk and stolen base Sunday against the Pirates.Hosmer posted another unremarkable line but did manage to steal his fourth base of the season and first since May 15. He hasn't been particularly efficient on the basepaths -- he has been caught three times -- but ranks fifth among first baseman in stolen bases. That's not a huge boost to his value, but does prop up his lack of power a bit.
Jun 25 2018Hosmer is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Rangers, according to Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune.It's certainly odd that Hosmer is not in the lineup Monday with the Padres being afforded an extra spot in the batting order while playing in the Rangers' park, but manager Andy Green simply decided it was time for a day off, and the reasoning does make sense: Hosmer has started every game since April 27, owns just a .673 OPS in June, and is 0-for-13 in his career against Monday's opposing starter, Cole Hamels. Expect Hosmer to be back in action Tuesday.
Jun 14 2018Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a two-RBI double Thursday against the Braves.Hosmer drove in the only two Padres' runs of the game with his 20th double of the season. That puts him behind only Jose Abreu among first baseman, though his lack of home run power and poor surrounding lineup continue to limit his upside.
Jun 13 2018Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's win over the Cardinals.Hosmer took starter Miles Mikolas deep in the fourth inning for his ninth homer on the year. This was Hosmer's second home run in the last three games, and he now has 29 extra-base hits this season (which ranks fourth among all MLB first basemen). The 28-year-old is hitting .286/.368/.480 with 31 RBI and 34 runs scored.
Jun 11 2018Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 3-1 win over the Marlins.Hosmer has gotten off to a strong start in June, slashing .353/.389/.588 with two doubles, two homers and six RBI through nine games. The Friars' big-ticket free agent has been as advertised since joining the club, also providing fantasy owners with consistent production at the first base position.
Jun 9 2018Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a double in Friday's 4-0 loss to the Marlins. The Padres only managed six hits all night, but that didn't stop Hosmer from recording his seventh multi-hit performance in his last 10 games. The 28-year-old is hitting a blistering .459 (17-for-37) over that stretch, boosting his slash line on the season to .289/.373/.470.
Jun 5 2018Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, three RBI and two runs scored in an 11-4 win over Atlanta on Monday. It was Hosmer's first long ball since May 15, but he does own six multi-hit efforts over his last seven contests. The first baseman's value has been unaffected with the move to San Diego, as he appears to be his usual, consistent self with a .293/.379/.477 slash line through 58 games.
May 31 2018Hosmer went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run in San Diego's 8-3 win over Miami on Thursday.Hosmer continued his recent hot streak following a brief May slump that saw his average dip as low as .256, as he's now roped eight hits in his last 11 at-bats to pump that number back up to .282. His six home runs aren't an especially head-turning number, but Hosmer is getting on base at an excellent .373 clip, and he's mashed 25 long balls in each of the last two seasons, so there's reason to believe he'll start leaving the yard with more regularity as his first season with the Padres progresses.
May 30 2018Hosmer went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in Tuesday's win over the Marlins. The extra-base hit and RBI were his first in both categories over the last 10 games games, as the low-scoring San Diego offense hasn't provided the 28-year-old with many run-producing opportunities. Hosmer still hasn't left the yard in two weeks, but sports a respectable .266/.357/.452 slash line in his first season in San Diego.
May 18 2018Hosmer went 2-for-3 with a walk, two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI in Friday's 3-2 win over the Pirates. The streaky first baseman has heated up again, collecting a hit in seven straight games while going 9-for-26 (.346) over that stretch with a homer, five doubles, eight RBI, four runs and two steals. Padres fans will be debating the merits of his big contract for a while, but Hosmer is holding up his end of the bargain so far with a .277/.375/.503 slash line through his first 42 games with the club.
May 17 2018Hosmer went 1-for-4 with three RBI during the Padres' loss to the Pirates on Thursday. He's now riding a six-game hit streak in which he's 7-for-23 with one home run and seven RBI. After pushing a run across on a third-inning forceout, Hosmer lofted one off the top of the right-center-field wall to drive in two during the fifth. San Diego's limited lineup has suppressed his run production (20 runs, 19 RBI), but Hosmer continues to help himself at the dish, posting a career-best 13.3 walk percentage with a .269/.367/.487 slash and six homers over 180 plate appearances.
May 15 2018Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's 4-0 win over the Rockies.Hosmer started the scoring early with the two-run home run to right field in the bottom of the first inning. The 28-year-old started May on a hot streak but has since cooled off a bit, although he does have a modest five-game hit streak (6-for-19 and four RBI).
May 2 2018Hosmer went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI in Wednesday's 9-4 loss to the Giants. It's his fifth straight game with multiple hits and at least one extra-base hit, and Hosmer now boasts a .303/.402/.505 slash line on the season. His run production has been lacking -- he has three homers but only eight RBI in 28 games -- thanks to the Padres' inability to find an effective leadoff hitter, but Hosmer's counting stats can't help but improve if he stays locked in.
May 1 2018Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a home run, triple and two runs scored in Tuesday's win over the Giants.Hosmer's third home run of the year was a big one -- a solo blast that broke a 2-2 tie in the ninth. Following back-to-back 25-home run seasons, his slow start in the power and run-producing departments isn't ideal, as he has just five RBI to go along with the three homers. He's found a way to keep contributing in other ways in the meantime, as he's put together four straight multi-hit games -- and five of six -- to raise his slash line to a solid .298/.402/.500.
Apr 27 2018Hosmer (personal) was reinstated from the family medical leave list Friday.Hosmer has been out since Tuesday in order to attend to a personal matter. Thanks to Thursday's off-day, he wound up missing just two games. He's batting second and playing first base in his return to action. To clear a spot for him on the active roster, Cory Spangenberg was optioned to Triple-A El Paso.
Apr 24 2018Hosmer (personal) is expected to rejoin the Padres on Friday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.Hosmer was placed on the family medical leave list Tuesday, but he's expected to return prior to the team's series opener against the Mets on Friday, which is when he's first eligible. In the meantime, Chase Headley and Wil Myers are both options to fill in for him at first base.
Apr 24 2018Hosmer was placed on the family medical leave list Tuesday. With the Padres having Thursday off, Hosmer will be eligible to return Friday against the Mets, although he could remain away from the team for additional time if needed. To replace Hosmer's spot on the roster, Eric Lauer's contract was selected from Triple-A El Paso.
Apr 18 2018Hosmer went 1-for-5 with a solo home in Tuesday's 7-3 loss to the Dodgers.Hosmer entered the ninth inning wearing a golden sombrero after striking out in all four of his previous plate appearances. He salvaged what would have been a horrid day at the plate when he took Kenley Jansen deep to spearhead a late comeback. The 28-year-old went a combined 0-for-8 since returning from a minor back ailment Monday, so the Padres -- and his fantasy owners -- are hoping Tuesday's homer will get the first baseman back on track.
Apr 16 2018Hosmer (back) is hitting third and playing first base Monday against the Dodgers, Eric Stephen of TrueBlueLA.com reports.Hosmer missed the past two games due to back tightness, but he's back to full health and back in action as expected. He'll resume his normal role in the Padres lineup looking to improve his .288 batting average against Los Angeles starter Hyun-Jin Ryu.
Apr 15 2018Hosmer (back) stated that he intends to play in Monday's matchup against the Dodgers, Dennis Lin of The Athletic San Diego reports.Hosmer has been out for the last two games with lower-back tightness, but he wants to get back into the lineup Monday. His injury doesn't appear to anything serious, and it's good news that he feels good enough to take the field. Hosmer's back will likely be assessed again Monday morning, which will determine whether he's in the starting lineup.
Apr 15 2018Hosmer is not in the lineup Sunday against the Giants due to lower-back tightness, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.Hosmer will sit out a second consecutive game due to an apparent bout with back tightness. It doesn't sound like it's anything overly serious, so he should tentatively be considered day-to-day. Chase Headley draws the start at first base Sunday, while Hosmer will look to hopefully get back into action Monday against the Dodgers.
Apr 14 2018Hosmer is not in the lineup Saturday against the Giants.Hosmer had started all of the Padres' first 15 games. He's been a very durable player, appearing in at least 158 games in each of the past three seasons, so don't expect too many more days off. The 28-year-old is off to a solid start at the plate, hitting .288/.364/.458, though he continues to disappoint those who want to see him put the ball in the air more often, as his flyball rate is down at 14 percent, compared to 26.4 percent for his career. That lack of flyballs has limited him to just one home run so far. Chase Headley will start at first base in his place Saturday.
Apr 14 2018Hosmer is not in the lineup Saturday against the Giants.Hosmer started all of the Padres' first 15 games. That lack of flyballs has limited him to just one home run so far. Chase Headley will start at first base in his place Saturday.
Apr 11 2018Hosmer hit his first home run, a solo blast, in a 2-for-4 game with two runs scored Wednesday against Colorado.Hosmer was hitting well of late, with four two-hit games in his past five outings, but only two of those hits had gone for extra bases. The power will have to come out if Hosmer is going to live up the massive contract he earned from the Padres this season. With a home run now to go with his six doubles, though, Hosmer's slugging percentage is sitting pretty at .529.
Apr 4 2018Hosmer went 0-for-3 with a walk in Tuesday's 8-4 win over the Rockies.Though he has yet to connect on a home run and has only two RBI and a run on his ledger through five games, Hosmer has been the steadying force in the three hole the Padres had been counting on after signing him to an eight-year, $144 million contract in February. Prior to the hitless showing Tuesday, Hosmer had produced six hits over the preceding three games, with four going for doubles. He has also drawn four walks to keep his on-base percentage above .400.
Mar 10 2018Hosmer is batting .227 (5-for-22) this spring after signing an eight-year-contract with the Padres this offseason. While the hits have been few and far between, Hosmer has contributed a pair of extra-base hits (a double and a home run) early on. With the Padres' starting first base job on lock, there is little concern regarding the veteran's performance this spring, especially considering he has been one of the more-consistent first base options over the past few years. The move to San Diego doesn't do much to change Hosmer's value from his time in Kansas City; we can expect a solid batting average and on-base skills to go along with 20-homer power while acting as the centerpiece of the Padres' lineup.
Feb 17 2018Hosmer and the Padres have agreed to terms on a deal, Keith Acee of the San Diego Union-Triubne reports. The terms of the deal are eight years with an opt-out clause after five, per Jon Morosi of MLB Network. At first blush, the addition of Hosmer appears redundant as the Padres employed Wil Myers (30 HR) as an everyday first baseman in 2017, but AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports Myers is on board with the deal and has agreed to move back to the outfield. Hosmer slashed .318/.385/.498 in 2017 and banged out 25 home runs for a second consecutive season.
Feb 17 2018Hosmer and the Padres have agreed to terms on a deal, Keith Acee of the San Diego Union-Triubne reports. The terms of the deal are eight years with an opt out after five, per Jon Morosi of MLB Network.Hosmer slashed .318/.385/.498 in 2017 and banged out 25 home runs for a second consecutive season. His presence provides leadership to a young core, and his bilingual ability should help in the clubhouse, but he's a bit redundant as the Padres currently employ Wil Myers (30 HR) as an everyday first baseman.
Nov 16 2017Hosmer rejected the Royals' qualifying offer prior to Thursday's deadline, Bill Shaikin of The Los Angeles Times reports.Hosmer will set his sights on a multi-year deal in the open market, as the 28-year-old has officially become a free agent by declining this offer. During the 2017 campaign, Hosmer slashed .318/.385/.498 with 25 home runs and 94 RBI and played in all 162 games.
Nov 7 2017The Royals made a qualifying offer to Hosmer prior to Monday's deadline, the Kansas City Star reports. He's expected to pass on the one-year, $17.4 million tender for 2018 and seek a multi-year deal in free agency. Hosmer had his best offensive season yet at the plate in 2017, hitting .318/.385/.498 with 25 homers, 94 RBI, and 98 runs scored.
Oct 1 2017Hosmer went 1-for-1 with a solo homer, a walk and two runs scored before being lifted in Sunday's 14-2 loss to Arizona. If he doesn't end up returning to Kansas City in free agency, Hosmer had a fitting ending to his prodcutive tenure with the team. He finishes the season slashing .318/.385/.498 while tying last year's career best of 25 home runs.
Sep 10 2017Hosmer went 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored during Sunday's win over Minnesota.Hosmer now has four consecutive multi-hit games and is up to an impressive .328/.393/.517 slash line with 24 homers, 85 RBI and 87 runs for the year. He's quietly putting together another strong fantasy campaign and might be saving the best for September -- when it matters most.
Aug 30 2017Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and a second run scored in Tuesday's 6-2 win over the Rays. His seventh-inning shot off Dan Jennings was Hosmer's 22nd of the season, and put what had been a tight ballgame out of reach. The first baseman is putting the finishing touches on an impressive August in which he's posted a .306/.393/.520 slash line with six homers and 20 RBI through 27 games.
Aug 23 2017Hosmer went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI Wednesday against the Rockies.Hosmer's walkoff three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth turned a 4-3 deficit into a 6-4 win. The first baseman was also responsible for narrowing the gap earlier with a seventh-inning RBI single. This effort raised Hosmer's slugging percentage over the .500 mark to .503, continuing what has easily been the most productive season for a player that had never previously topped .465.
Aug 16 2017Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and four RBI during Tuesday's loss in Oakland.Simply put, the 27-year-old is having an outstanding season. The lack of offense around Hosmer has certainly hindered his value, but the first baseman remains a top option at the position. He's played in all 119 of his team's games while posting a career-high .314 batting average and .186 ISO.
Aug 12 2017Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's victory against the White Sox.The first baseman got the party started with two outs in the top of the first inning by smashing his 19th homer of the year. Hosmer used an aggressive approach Saturday, seeing just nine pitches over his four at-bats while bumping his RBI total to 62. His .312 batting average and 72 runs scored this season are top-10 marks in the AL.
Aug 7 2017Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a solo home run during Monday's loss to St. Louis.Hosmer has quietly gone about his business this season to the tune of 18 homers, 61 RBI, six stolen bases, 68 runs and a .315/.371/.498 slash line. He doesn't have the power that the top-tier first basemen offer, but Hosmer's reliability and cross-category production is still extremely valuable.
Aug 6 2017Hosmer went a combined 3-for-9 with a home run and four RBI in a doubleheader against Seattle on Sunday. After a trio of 0-for-4 goose eggs against the Mariners, the first baseman was productive in the second half the twin bill, swatting three hits -- including his 17th homer of the year in the sixth inning. Hosmer has now reached the 60-RBI threshold for the sixth time in seven seasons and continues to hit north of .300 (.316) this year.
Aug 3 2017Hosmer was named the team's Player of the Month after slashing .379/.434/.592 over 103 at-bats in July, KFH Radio reports.Over 26 games in July, Hosmer ranked among the AL leaders in hits (39), RBI (21), runs (22), batting average and on-base percentage. The third baseman managed 14 multi-hit efforts, including a five-hit game on July 26 that included a grand slam. As a bonus, Hosmer doubled his season's stolen base total by swiping three bags last month. Now in his seventh big-league season, the 27-year-old's .877 OPS through 106 contests is well beyond Hosmer's career mark of .775.
Jul 29 2017Hosmer is having success with a new offensive approach that sacrifices some exit velocity for elevation and location, Mike Petriello of MLB.com reports. The first baseman's pull percentage and hard-hit contact rate have been on the decline since April, while at the same time, Hosmer's production has been soaring. Elevating the ball has been his key to success -- the 27-year-old has managed to reduce his groundball rate by nearly 20 percent from where it stood in the campaign's opening month. Hitting hard grounders isn't going to do much damage at the big-league level, so giving up some authority for a better launch angle makes perfect sense. Since April 26, Hosmer owns a .408 wOBA with a .350/.405/.565 slash line, making him one of the best hitters in the game over that period.
Jul 26 2017Hosmer went 5-for-6 with a home run, five runs scored and six RBI in Wednesday's 16-2 rout of the Tigers. The homer was his 16th of the year and first career grand slam, highlighting a nine-run seventh inning for the Royals that put the game completely out of reach. Hosmer's now hitting .320 (16-for-50) since the All-Star break with four home runs, 12 RBI and 13 runs in 13 games, and his ,876 OPS on the year would establish a new career high if he keeps up that pace.
Jul 23 2017Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in Sunday's 5-4 win over the White Sox.Hosmer's home run was the third in a three-batter span against starter Derek Holland. The 27-year-old first baseman is setting himself up to get paid in free agency this offseason, slashing career highs across the board with a .315/.374/.497 line.
Jul 22 2017Hosmer (personal) is back in the lineup Saturday against the White Sox, Rustin Dodd of The Kansas City Star reports.Hosmer was away from the team Friday night in order to attend to a family matter, but it seems like he got everything resolved and is ready t get back in action again. He'll resume his normal spot in the lineup, batting cleanup and playing first base.
Jul 21 2017Hosmer is out of the starting lineup for the first time this season Friday.Hosmer has been scorching from the plate this month, slashing .365/.420/.603 with a 1.023 OPS, but the Royals will let him take a day off for the first time all year. Brandon Moss takes over at first base in his stead and bats fourth.
Jul 21 2017Hosmer is not with team Friday night because he is attending to a family matter, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports. This explains why the scorching hot first baseman is getting his first off day of the season. Despite the ominous circumstances, Hosmer is expected to return to the team (and presumably the lineup) Saturday. Consider him day-to-day in the meantime, however.
Jul 20 2017Hosmer went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, two RBI and three runs during Thursday's win over Detroit.Hosmer is up to nine round trippers, 25 RBI and 25 runs through his past 34 games, and somewhat quietly, he's well on his way to another rock-solid fantasy campaign. The 27-year-old first baseman owns an impressive .315/.372/.493 slash line with 14 homers, 46 RBI and 55 runs for the year.
Jul 17 2017Hosmer went 2-for-5 with a solo homer Monday against the Tigers.Hosmer's 13th home run of the season came with his team trailing 8-1 in what ended as a 10-2 loss. He had been just 1-for-11 since the All-Star break after hitting safely in 15 straight coming in, so hopefully this performance gets the soon-to-be free agent going again.
Jul 9 2017Hosmer went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer in Sunday's final contest before the All-Star break against the Dodgers. Most impressive about the first baseman's fourth-inning blast, Hosmer's 12th of the year, is that it came off Clayton Kershaw on a night when the pitcher made MLB history (it was the first time a player struck out at least 13 in a complete game with fewer than 100 pitches). Hosmer is now riding a 15-game hitting streak, and a season-high .318 batting average into the All-Star break. He's atop the list of ASG snubs this year, as Toronto's Justin Smoak and Oakland's Yonder Alonso won the vote.
Jul 2 2017Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a two run home run during Saturday's loss to Minnesota. The homer was Hosmer's 11th of the season, and he now sports a rock-solid .906 OPS through 28 games since the beginning of June. He'll probably have a difficult time matching last season's 25 round trippers and 104 RBI, but his .305 batting average is a career-high mark. Hosmer remains a solid fantasy asset in all settings.
Jun 24 2017Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a solo homer Saturday against the Blue Jays.Hosmer's ninth blast of the campaign gave the Royals their first lead of the game in the fourth inning of a winning effort. He's been a solid fantasy option as evidenced by his .300/.357/.466 slash line, and his production is very similar to his strong 2015 season, which is great news after his struggles in 2016.
Jun 5 2017The Royals will take trade offers for Hosmer as the team prepares for a rebuilding stage, Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe reports. It's time for the organization to unload the group that brought it a title in 2015, and Hosmer is one of the most valuable trade chips the Royals have. His .305 average sits at a career high, but the first baseman's other numbers are lacking. However, a major reason for his dip in counting stats is the poor offense he's stuck in. A move to a playoff contender would boost Hosmer's fantasy appeal.
May 30 2017Hosmer went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Monday's 10-7 loss to the Tigers.Hosmer tagged former closer Francisco Rodriguez for a 382-foot shot to left in the seventh, bringing home Lorenzo Cain to give the Royals a temporary 6-5 lead. The veteran first baseman's bat has come alive in May after a sluggish opening month of the season, as Monday's production brought his monthly line to .366/.425/.574 over 113 plate appearances. He's also tallied 12 multi-hit efforts since May 3.
May 9 2017Hosmer went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and two stolen bases during Monday's win over Tampa Bay.The stolen bases are a nice bonus, and after stealing 38 bags through his first three years in the league, Hosmer has the potential to improve on his five swipes from last season. He's also beginning to heat up with an active 18-for-40 stretch that's resulted in eight runs, two home runs, eight RBI and a 1.200 OPS. Following a disappointing start (.500 OPS through the first 20 games of the season), Hosmer appears to be rounding into the reliable form he's shown over the past two years.
May 3 2017Hosmer attributes his slow start to a lack of plate discipline and trying to pull the ball, Lee Judge of The Kansas City Star reports. The 6-foot-4 first baseman has made a name for himself by using his long frame to bombard the opposite field with hits. That being the case, Hosmer understands the strategy for opposing pitchers is run fastballs in on his hands. "That's been the book on me for the last couple of weeks," he said. According to the 27-year-old, he needs to lay off that inside pitch so he can handle the ones out over the plate: "I've got to give that pitch to the pitchers," Hosmer added. Entering Wednesday, his .250 BABIP and .093 ISO sit well off his career marks of .311 and .149, respectively.
May 1 2017Hosmer struggled through the season's opening month, hitting .225/.281/.292 with just one home run, six RBI and four runs over 96 plate appearances.Over the past three seasons, Hosmer has destroyed the ball in the early going. From 2014-2016 combined, the first baseman hit .312 while averaging 10-plus RBI and runs during the opening month. The Kansas City offense has been awful as a whole, so it's fair to say his numbers have been slighted by those around him. Furthermore, Hosmer's seeing the ball well and owns a career-high contact rate. Although he's not squaring the ball up by his standards, the 27-year-old is still putting oomph into it when he connects. The glaring stat, a career-low .257 BABIP, suggests Hosmer's been a bit unlucky and due for an about-face.
May 1 2017Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Monday's 6-1 win over the White Sox.The dinger was Hosmer's second of the season after he struggled to a .225/.281/.292 slash line in the season's opening month. Perhaps this will get him going for the month of May. The 27-year-old is still making plenty of contact but has been a bit unlucky with a .250 BABIP, so expect things to improve eventually. The window is still open to buy low on the left-handed slugger.
Apr 26 2017Hosmer went 3-for-5 with a triple during Wednesday's loss to Chicago. It's been a dreadful start to the season for the first baseman, as Hosmer sports a .220/.273/.293 slash line. Patience will likely pay off, though. His three-year averages entering 2017 went to the tune of 77 runs, 17 home runs, 85 RBI and a .278/.338/.432 line, and he improved significantly each of the past two seasons. Expecting his 2016 numbers might be asking too much, but Hosmer's track record suggests this is a potential buy-low spot.
Apr 8 2017Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in Saturday's win over the Astros.Hosmer's first blast of the season came in a six-run eighth inning that propelled Kansas City to their second win in a row. The first baseman was just 3-for-19 until hitting the home run that also earned him his first RBI of the campaign. Although the counting stats are slow to roll in, Hosmer does have himself a quaint four-game hitting streak going.
Apr 6 2017Hosmer went 1-for-4 at the dish in Wednesday's 9-1 loss to the Twins. The Royals offense has been dreadful over its first two games with a combined seven hits, and the burden will fall on Hosmer, the club's cleanup hitter, to spark a turnaround. The 27-year-old has yet to fully morph into the slugger the organization envisioned when he was a top prospect six years ago, but he had a minor breakthrough in 2016, when he smacked a career-high 25 homers. If his prior history is any indication, Hosmer should heat up from his 1-for-7 start to the campaign before long, as he's slashed .313/.376/.456 in April over the last three seasons.
Mar 26 2017Hosmer (elbow) is batting fourth and playing first base during Sunday's Cactus League game against the Angels, Rustin Dodd of The Kansas City Star reports.Hosmer was hit by a pitch in the elbow during the World Baseball Classic and suffered some swelling. It appears that the swelling has subsided enough to return to live action.
Mar 24 2017Hosmer has a swollen right elbow after being HBP in the WBC Championship game, 610 Sports Radio's Josh Vernier reports.Hosmer didn't have to leave the game at all, so it doesn't appear to be anything overly serious. He'll take Friday off and will be reevaluated on Saturday, so expect another update on his status then.
Mar 16 2017Hosmer launched a game-winning, two-run home run in the eighth inning during Team USA's World Baseball Classic win over Venezuela. After San Diego's thick-aired marine layer cost him a tater earlier in the game, the Royals' first baseman connected on a shot that cleared the right-centerfield fence. The impending free agent looks set to at least come close to matching his 25 home runs from 2016, but he'll need to reverse the two-year increase that gave him a 58.9 groundball percentage. Of course, that big-fly total was the six-year veteran's best, and if the 27-year-old takes to the air more, he'll offset the downside. Count him as a steady mixed league buy in the middle rounds, though overvaluing the power jump in AL-only leagues could hurt his owners.
Jan 13 2017Hosmer agreed to a one-year, $12.25 million deal with the Royals on Friday, avoiding arbitration, MLB.com's Jeffrey Flanagan reports. He received a $4 million raise over what he made in 2016 and will become a free agent after the 2017 season. Hosmer is entering his age-27 season, for what it's worth, and coming off a year where he set career highs in home runs (25) and RBI (104), but his .266 average was his lowest mark since 2012.
Oct 2 2016Hosmer is out of the lineup Sunday against the Indians, Rustin Dodd of the Kansas City Star reports.Hosmer will be out of the lineup for the second consecutive day, as Kendrys Morales is set to start at first base Sunday afternoon. Over the last 14 games, Hosmer has gone just 10-for-50 at the plate, bringing his batting average down to .266 for the year.
Oct 2 2016Hosmer is out Sunday due to wrist soreness, Rustin Dodd of the Kansas City Star reports.Hosmer has reportedly been dealing with wrist soreness for the last few weeks. However, manager Ned Yost has said that the injury isn't anything serious. Looking onto the 2017 season, there's no reason to believe Hosmer's wrist ailment should hinder his future performance.
Oct 1 2016Hosmer is out of the lineup Saturday against the Indians, MLB.com's Jeffrey Flanagan reports. The Royals are resting several regulars Saturday as they play out the string. Daniel Nava is starting at first base and hitting seventh against Trevor Bauer and the Indians.
Sep 28 2016Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in Wednesday's contest against the Twins.Hosmer's third-inning blast extended his career-high total to 25, and pushed his career-best RBI mark to 103. The first baseman is hitting just .250 this month, but he's fairly compensated by mashing five homers, tallying 21 RBI and scoring 14 runs during September.
Sep 25 2016Hosmer is out of the lineup Sunday against Detroit, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports. It will be a rare day off for Hosmer, the everyday first baseman who served as the DH on Saturday night. Kendrys Morales will DH on Sunday, while Whit Merrifield enters the lineup at first.
Sep 24 2016Hosmer went 1-for-5 with a ninth-inning go-ahead three-run homer in Saturday's 7-4 victory over the Tigers. After a largely miserable performance in which he struck out three times, Hosmer stepped up when it counted most, blasting a 399-foot shot to right off perennial All-Star closer Francisco Rodriguez that plated Paulo Orlando and Cheslor Cuthbert in the ninth to snap a 4-4 tie. The round-tripper was Hosmer's first in nearly two weeks, with his last homer having come on Sep. 11. The 26-year-old has cooled off considerably since a hot start to the season, but his 23 homers and 100 RBI are both career highs.
Sep 10 2016Hosmer went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer, a walk and a strikeout Saturday. While Hosmer doesn't have the sheer power of other first basemen, he now has 22 homers, 90 RBI and 74 runs scored on the season and is slashing .275/.339/.447. He's been particularly productive over the last seven days, with seven runs, seven RBI and two homers.
Sep 5 2016Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer, a walk, four RBI and two runs scored in an 11-5 win over the Twins on Monday.Hosmer's blast came in the eighth inning with the Royals already up 8-5, effectively icing the game. It was Hosmer's 21st of the season, already a career-high with still nearly a month left in the season. He's sacrificed average for the power a bit this season, hitting .273, down from .297 a year ago, and striking out a career-high 112 times.
Sep 3 2016Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his 20th of the season, and two strikeouts in a 5-2 win over Detroit.Hosmer has never been a major power-hitting first baseman, but he has now attained a career high with 20 dingers on the season and is an instrumental piece on a Royals squad that is chasing the second American League wild card slot. He's slashing .273/.336/.433 for the year with 66 runs scored and 81 RBI.
Aug 27 2016Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer in Friday's 6-3 victory over the Red Sox.The slugging first baseman opened the scoring with a 364-foot shot to left center in the first that drove in Jarrod Dyson and Lorenzo Cain. Hosmer has now reached safely in 10 straight games, with four multi-hit efforts over that span. His 18 RBI in August also serve as his second-best total in a month during the 2016 campaign.
Aug 17 2016Hosmer went 2-for-3 with a double, a two-run homer and a walk in a win against the Tigers on Wednesday. It was a big homer, too, a ninth-inning shot that broke a 1-1 tie. Hosmer had been stone cold since the All-Star break, but he's now homered in consecutive games and driven in four runs over the last thee; looks like his bat's waking up just in time for the stretch run.
Aug 17 2016Hosmer is only hitting .192/.246/.292 after winning the All-Star Game MVP.The 26-year-old hit .299/.355/.476 in the season's first half, but his production has since dropped off. One cause for his struggles is a league-leading 61 percent groundball rate.
Jul 31 2016Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a solo homer Sunday at the Rangers.Hosmer's 15th bomb of the season came in the first inning, giving the Royals their only lead of the day in a losing effort. He finished the month by slugging homers in two of his last three games, and he's now slashing .280/.339/.448 on the year.
Jul 29 2016Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his 14th of the year, in Friday's 8-3 loss to the Rangers. After hitting 10 longballs in the first two months of the season, Hosmer has sent just four over the fences since May 31. The first baseman, who is now hitting a season-low .282, is just one of many Royals who have cooled down in recent weeks. Hosmer is still on pace to set a career high in home runs, but his fantasy value is likely at a season low in most formats.
Jul 27 2016On Tuesday night, Eric Hosmer went 0-4 and over the last thirty days is hitting .223/.277/.298Recently, Hosmer has been in a complete funk since the All-Star game hitting .195 with just one extra-base hit. Nothing points to an injury, but I could see benching him in shallow leagues until shows some sign of turning around this cold streak.
Jul 10 2016Hosmer is not in the lineup Sunday against Seattle, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.Hosmer will be replaced in the lineup by Kendrys Morales who's starting at first base and batting third. Hosmer has seen action in the Royals' last 41 games, slashing .302/.360/.453 during that time.
Jun 7 2016Hosmer went 1-for-2 with two walks in Tuesday's 9-1 loss to the Orioles. The 26-year-old has how hit safely in 11 of the last 13 games, and has already drawn six free passes in the first seven games of June. Hosmer is turning in his most well-rounded season at the plate yet, now slashing .321/.379/.523 over 218 at-bats, with 12 doubles, a triple, 10 homers and 35 RBI. He's well on pace to surpass his career-high of 19 round-trippers, a figure he reached back in his rookie campaign in 2011.
May 29 2016Hosmer went 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI in Sunday's win over the White Sox.That's his third straight multi-hit game, and Hosmer is now hitting a scorching .319/.368/.532 on the season. The 26-year-old finally seems to be coming into his own as a power hitter, and Hosmer is on pace for the first 25-homer campaign of his career.
May 28 2016Hosmer went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 8-7 victory over the White Sox.The Royals' resident RBI machine played a key role in the team's jaw-dropping seven-run rally in the ninth, plating Lorenzo Cain with a double to deep right center to close the margin at the time to 7-6. Hosmer now has 21 RBI in May, along with five doubles and six homers. Saturday's effort also marked his seventh multi-hit outing of the month, and brought his season line to .310/.360/.522.
May 28 2016Hosmer went 3-for-4 with a solo homer and four RBI in Friday's 7-5 victory over the White Sox.The 26-year-old first baseman played a pivotal role in the Royals' offensive attack, smacking a 387-foot solo shot off Miguel Gonzalez in the sixth, before plating Alcides Escobar and Whit Merrifield with a single in the seventh. Hosmer had gotten the scoring started with a first-inning RBI groundout that brought in Escobar as well, giving him his first four-RBI effort of the season. He's now knocked in a whopping 19 runs during May, with five multi-RBI games.
May 18 2016Hosmer went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer in the first game of a double header against the Red Sox on Wednesday afternoon. The bomb was his eighth of the season. Similar to last year, Hosmer is off to a wonderful start. He is hitting .333/.395/.565 with 17 extra-base hits, 20 RBI and 21 runs. Last season, he hit .310 in April and smashed seven homers in the first two months.
May 1 2016Hosmer went 2-for-4 with his fourth home run of the season Sunday versus Seattle. The 26-year-old's impressive 18-game hitting streak came to an end Saturday, but he got right back to it Sunday, upping his average back to .333 with the pair of base-knocks. Hosmer's OPS sits at .912 through 24 games and he seems poised for another excellent season in the heart of the Royals lineup.
Apr 27 2016Hosmer went 3-for-4 against the Angels on Wednesday, but his two-run homer in the first-inning accounted for all the Royals' scoring in a 4-2 loss. That's now 17 consecutive games with a hit for Hosmer, a career-long streak during which he's lifted his average from an early .214 to .333; that said, the counting stats still haven't really been there (just eight RBI and 10 runs) with the Royals' offense as a whole still stuck in first gear. It looks like Hosmer's on track for another strong season, but his power contributions will never fit in with the upper class of first basemen.
Apr 12 2016Hosmer went 3-for-4 with a run scored in Monday's loss to the Astros. The Royals didn't bring their clutch-hitting bats to the park in this one, stranding a small Midwestern town on base, and the three hitters ahead of Hosmer went 2-for-14, so circumstances conspired to limit his counting stats. Nonetheless, Hosmer's off to a .318 start even though six of his seven hits have come in just two games. We'll need to see more consistency moving forward, but even though the 26-year-old is still looking for his first homer, he should again provide a solid combination of power and average for fantasy owners.
Apr 3 2016Hosmer went 3-for-4 with an RBI in Sunday's win over the Mets. The 26-year-old wasn't exactly squaring the ball up Sunday, but his seeing-eye RBI single opened the scoring and he later reached on a diving bunt single. Hosmer posted the best all-around season of his career in 2015, and his Opening Day performance bodes well as he looks to continue his evolution.
Mar 20 2016Hosmer went 2-for-4 with his second home run of the spring in Saturday's split squad loss to the Rangers. He's hitting .400 (12-of-30) this spring. After just nine home runs in 2014, Hosmer bounced back with 18 home runs last season. He had hit 14 or more home runs in every season before 2014, so it looks like he'll hit 14 or more again if spring training is any indication.
Sep 30 2015Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a game-winning two-run home run and a walk in a 5-3 win over the White Sox on Wednesday. That is now back-to-back games with a homer and it makes for four in his last 10 games. Hosmer is having the season that everyone has been anticipating for years, as he maintains a .301 average with 18 homers, 32 doubles and 91 RBI in 154 games played. The lefty is still just 25-years-old and he may be even better next season.
Sep 25 2015Hosmer is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Indians. The 25-year-old went 2-for-4 with his 16th homer of the year and two runs scored in the Royals' AL-Central-clinching win over the Mariners on Thursday. He will be rewarded with a day off Friday, as will most of the team's regulars, as Drew Butera steps in for the start at first base.
Sep 24 2015Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a double, a solo homer and two runs against the Mariners on Thursday. The power production remains low for first base, but Hosmer's been a credit to fantasy owners everywhere else, as he's now sitting on a carer-high .304 batting average, with his 87 RBI and 93 runs also representing career bests. He's certainly been one of the big keys to the Royals' run to the AL Central title, which they clinched Thursday.
Sep 19 2015Hosmer went 3-for-5 with a double, a solo homer and two runs scored in Saturday's 6-5 extra-inning loss to the Tigers.Hosmer's bat has heated up considerably over the last three contests, during which he has posted a .400 average (6-for-15) with two doubles, a homer, two RBI and four runs scored. Considering that the All-Star first baseman was mired in a 2-for-22 slump prior to the current hot streak, Hosmer's recent success is a welcome sight to both the Royals and his fantasy owners. The 25-year-old has bounced back nicely in 2015 with 15 homers after only hitting nine last season, and his current .303 average is the best of his major league career.
Sep 6 2015Hosmer is out of the lineup Sunday against the White Sox, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports. He'll get a breather while the Royals look to use the Alex Gordon at DH, which will move Kendrys Morales over to Hosmer's post at first base. Hosmer went 1-for-6 with a walk over the first two games of the series.
Sep 4 2015Hosmer reached base four times in Thursday's victory over the Tigers, generating three singles and a walk while scoring and driving in a run.The three-hit day upped Hosmer's season average to .312, but most of his production has been rather hollow of late. He's produced eight hits over his last five games, but only one has gone for extra bases, and he hasn't smacked a home run since Aug. 14.
Aug 27 2015Hosmer is not in the lineup Thursday against Baltimore, Josh Vernier of 610 AM in Kansas City reports.Hosmer will join fellow-regular Lorenzo Cain on the bench Thursday as manager Ned Yost gives Kendrys Morales a chance to play in the field at first base. Ben Zobrist, the usual left fielder, will DH on Thursday.
Aug 14 2015Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in Friday's win over the Angels.Hosmer is having a career-best season, a campaign paced by a very strong past month. Since July 11, Hosmer is batting .381 with six homers and 26 RBI.
Aug 13 2015Hosmer went 2-for-5 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored against the Angels on Thursday.Hosmer, who homered Tuesday, hit a solo shot off Angels closer Huston Street and has now hit safely in 25 of his past 27 games. After hitting .385 in the month of July, Hosmer is hitting .317 in August. For the season, the 25-year-old is hitting .318 with 13 homers and 67 RBI.
Aug 11 2015Hosmer cracked his 12th home run of the season in Tuesday's victory against the Tigers. The first baseman also stole his fifth base in the affair. Hosmer has been strong at the dish all season, and so far in August has kept up the act with a .324 batting average. Along with his 12 home runs, the first baseman has 64 RBI and a .317 batting average this season.
Aug 6 2015Hosmer went 1-for-2 with three walks and two runs scored in an 8-6 loss to the Tigers on Thursday.Hosmer has been an annual disappointment for fantasy owners year after year, but he is finally having the season everyone expected. He now holds a .320 average with 11 homers and 58 RBI. Since the beginning of July, Hosmer has been one of the hottest hitters in baseball, hitting just short of .400 with an OPS just shy of 1.000.
Jul 28 2015Hosmer was the offensive star Tuesday, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a home run.Hosmer has been raging hot the past two days, collecting six hits, six RBI and two homers in the last two days. The first baseman has been strong this season, hitting a robust .313 with 11 home runs and 55 RBI.
Jul 26 2015Hosmer is not in the lineup Sunday against the Astros, Josh Vernier of 610 Sports Radio Kansas City reports.Hosmer hasn't had a day off since July 1, so the timing was right for a maintenance day with AL Cy Young candidate and southpaw Dallas Keuchel on the mound for the opposing Astros. Kendrys Morales will man first base in his stead, while Salvador Perez serves as the designated hitter.
Jul 24 2015Manager Ned Yost said Friday that Hosmer will likely get an off-day on Sunday, Josh Vernier of 610 Sports reports.Hosmer has played every game this season, so it looks like Yost will give his star first baseman the day off for Sunday's series finale against the Astros. Nothing is set in stone at this point, so owners will have to monitor the situation once Kansas City's lineup is released Sunday to confirm the potential off-day.
Jul 2 2015Hosmer (finger) is back in the lineup Thursday, Andy McCullough of the KC Star reports. After sitting out the entire series against Houston, Hosmer will return to action Thursday as the Royals kick off a series against Minnesota. Hosmer will bat fourth and man first base.
Jul 1 2015Hosmer (finger) took soft toss swings, played catch and fielded grounders Wednesday, Andy McCullough of the KC Star reports.Hosmer continues to be held out while recovering from a sprained left ring finger. It's unclear when he'll be able to return to the lineup, but at this point it seems unlikely he plays Thursday against Minnesota.
Jun 29 2015Hosmer (finger), who is not in Monday's lineup, is not expected to play in the Royals' current series against the Astros, Andy McCullough of the KC Star reports.Hosmer is dealing with a sprained left ring finger, and it appears the team will opt to rest him for a few days in hopes of alleviating the issue. The three-game set in Houston concludes Wednesday night before the Royals return home to host the Twins for a four-game series beginning Thursday.
Jun 28 2015Royals manager Ned Yost said Sunday that Hosmer (finger) will likely be held out of the lineup Monday against the Astros, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.Hosmer left Sunday's game against the A's due to a sprained left ring finger, even though he was only serving as DH. It isn't a great sign that he's already expected to miss at least one game, but Royals manager Ned Yost didn't say anything about a potential long-term absence.
Jun 28 2015Hosmer left Sunday's game due to the sprained left ring finger injury he's been playing through, the Kansas City Star reports. The Royals started Hosmer at DH Sunday to give him some rest, but he apparently couldn't play effectively through the injury, so Cain was used despite dealing with a sore hamstring injury of his own that he suffered in Saturday's game.
Jun 28 2015After being listed in the Royals' initial lineup at first base, Hosmer will instead serve as the designated hitter during Sunday's game against the Athletics, Joel Goldberg of FOX Sports Kansas City reports. Hosmer's reportedly dealing with a mildly sprained ring finger on his left hand. For the purposes of those fielding daily lineups, the change doesn't matter much, as Hosmer will still occupy the fourth spot in the Royals order while Kendrys Morales takes over at first base. All indications are that Hosmer's injury is a minor one, so it's not expected to have much of an impact on his overall performance. Hosmer is batting .294 with eight homers and 40 RBI this season.
Jun 19 2015Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's loss to the Red Sox.After a decent start in the power department, Hosmer had gone 28 games without a home run entering Friday's game. While he may never develop into a classic power-hitting first baseman, Hosmer's .300 batting average, 38 runs scored and 38 RBI illustrate his value as a well-rounded fantasy contributor.
Jun 13 2015Hosmer is out of the lineup for Saturday's interleague game against the Cardinals, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports. One of Hosmer or Kendrys Morales had to hit the bench without the DH spot in the lineup, and it will be Hosmer for Saturday (Morales missed Friday's game). There's no guarantee Hosmer will be back for Sunday as Morales could get another start at first base, so double check before adding him.
May 31 2015Hosmer is out of the lineup Sunday against the Cubs, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.Following Saturday's rainout, the Cubs will send Tsuyoshi Wada to the mound Sunday instead to face the Royals, resulting in a day off for Hosmer. Kendrys Morales will shift from his usual DH role to fill the void at first base, batting cleanup for the Royals.
May 30 2015Hosmer is not in the lineup Saturday against the Cubs, Matthew DeFranks of FOX Sports Kansas City reports. The Royals just had a day off Thursday and have another one Monday, but with lefty Tsuyoshi Wada due up for Chicago, manager Ned Yost has decided to sit Hosmer for the first time this season. Kendrys Morales will man first base and bat cleanup in his absence.
May 7 2015Hosmer went 2-for-4 with his fifth homer, a walk, three RBI and two runs in Thursday's win over Cleveland.Hosmer is making the nonbelievers look foolish, as he's off to an outstanding start to the season, sporting a .324 average, .968 OPS and 23 RBI in 28 games. We believe that he can hit for average; the question is whether Hosmer can sustain his power-hitting prowess. With a fly-ball rate that's lower than last year's and an inflated HR/FB, it doesn't seem like that's an entirely likely outcome. But even if Hosmer falls short of 20 homers, he could retain very solid fantasy value.
May 6 2015Hosmer went 2-for-4 from the plate in Tuesday's win over the Indians with a triple, a home run and four RBIs.Hosmer is now hitting .320 on the season while getting on base 40 percent of the time. His .940 OPS is good for 10th in the American League, and has a WAR of 1.5, which is tied for third in the AL along with Mike Trout.
Apr 30 2015Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in Wednesday's loss to the Indians.Hosmer knocked out his second long ball of the year in the sixth inning off Danny Salazar, but it wasn't enough to help the Royals stave off defeat. The young first baseman now has five hits in his last three games, and owns a .867 OPS through 80 at-bats this season. From a fantasy standpoint, Hosmer is certainly meeting expectations.
Apr 9 2015Hosmer went 2-for-5 with his first homer of the year and three RBI in Wednesday's win over the White Sox.Hosmer's getting off to a nice start after disappointing fantasy owners mightily last season with just nine homers and a .716 OPS. He's still only 24 years old, so he has time to break out yet, but it's questionable whether Hosmer will ever develop enough power to be a particularly viable fantasy option at first base.
Apr 8 2015Hosmer went 1-for-5 with a RBI and a strikeout in Monday's game against the White Sox.He slotted in as the cleanup hitter in Kansas City's first game of the season and will probably remain in that spot in the order for most, if not all of 2015. The Royals face Jose Quintana and the White Sox again Wednesday, but Hosmer has just six hits in 35 career plate appearances against Quintana, so he's not a great play in daily leagues.
Feb 18 2015Hosmer has agreed to a two-year, $13.9 million dollar deal with the Royals, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports. The Royals avoided arbitration with Hosmer to keep their first baseman in Kansas City. Hosmer is eligible for one more year of arbitration, but won't be a free agent until after the 2017 season.
Feb 18 2015Hosmer has agreed to a two-year, $13.9 million dollar deal with the Royals, avoiding arbitration, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports. The Royals will avoid arbitration with Hosmer this year and next but he'll be due up again in 2017, his final year before free agency.
Oct 25 2014Hosmer went 1-for-4 with an RBI in Thursday's 3-2 win over the Giants in Game 3 of the World Series.Hosmer's sixth-inning RBI put the Royals up 3-0 at the time and after giving up two runs in the bottom of the inning, they held the Giants scoreless from there on out to take a 2-1 series lead. While the hit Thursday was a big one, Hosmer is just 1-for-10 in the series.
Sep 26 2014Hosmer continued his late-season hot streak Thursday against the White Sox, going 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBI.He's hit in seven straight, notching multiple base knocks in five of those games. And although he still hasn't been hitting many home runs (Thursday's was his first since Sept. 14), Hosmer has rapped out five doubles over the course of this streak. It's not going to be enough to endear him to fantasy owners for next year, though.
Sep 17 2014Hosmer is out of the lineup Wednesday against the White Sox.Manager Ned Yost decided that with lefty Chris Sale on the mound for the White Sox, it was an optimal time to give Hosmer a day off. He's been in the lineup for each of the Royals' 15 games since being activated from the DL on Sept. 1, batting .264/.339/.472 during that time.
Sep 12 2014Hosmer was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in a losing cause against the Red Sox on Friday night. His seventh home run was the first Royals hit to leave the yard in a week (the only other home run over that span was of the inside-the park variety hit by Lorenzo Cain). The Royals have struggled to score runs and are last in the American League in long balls so they really need to execute when they put men on base.
Sep 8 2014Hosmer had a strong day at the dish Monday, going 3-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI.Things had been slow for Hosmer offensively since coming off the disabled list at the start of the month, as the first baseman was hitting just .190 since his activation. The multi-hit game was his first since July 18, and brought his average up to .267 for the season.
Sep 1 2014Hosmer (hand) was activated from the 15-day disabled list Monday, Josh Vernier of Fox Sports Kansas City reports.Hosmer will rejoin the club Monday with the expanding of the rosters as the calendar flips to September. He may rejoin the lineup Monday night, but may not have guaranteed playing time in September given the moves the Royals made while he was out.
Sep 1 2014Hosmer is in the lineup upon his return to the Royals on Monday, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports. After resting nearly a month due to a stress fracture in his left hand, Hosmer will bat third and take on left field against the Rangers. In two rehab games at Triple-A Omaha, he belted a home run in 10 at-bats.
Aug 29 2014Hosmer (hand) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Omaha on Saturday, Jeffrey Flanagan of FOX Sports Kansas City reports.X-rays taken earlier in the week on Hosmer's injured hand came back negative, and he is set to resume playing in games. The Royals have not announced when he will return to the big club, but with the team in the playoff hunt, and Hosmer indicating he wants to see around 20 at-bats, he is on track to be back with the Royals sometime next week.
Aug 24 2014Hosmer (hand) will undergo another X-ray Monday, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.Doctors will evaluate how far Hosmer has come along in his healing process from the stress fracture. If his hand checks out OK, Hosmer could soon begin a hitting program, with an eye on returning to the Royals in early- or mid-September.
Aug 14 2014Manager Ned Yost said Hosmer (hand) will not be cleared to swing for another week, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.Hosmer underwent an X-ray Thursday which apparently showed he hadn't sufficiently recovered enough to resume baseball activities. The first baseman was first given a three-to-six week recovery timetable upon his placement on the DL, but at this point, it seems things could be trending toward the far end of that range.
Aug 11 2014Hosmer hopes to be able to begin swinging after undergoing an X-ray on his injured right hand on Thursday, the Kansas City Star's Andy McCullough reports. The results of the X-rays will determine whether Hosmer can commence hitting. He is hopeful to return within the 3-to-6 week timetable originally announced when the fracture was discovered on July 31, and Thursday's results will go a long way in determining a new timetable. The Royals just traded for Josh Willingham from the Twins, who will presumably slot in at DH for as long as Hosmer is out, with Billy Butler continuing to man first base.
Aug 8 2014Hosmer (hand) will be held out of baseball activities for at least two weeks, the Associated Press reports. The dead period with regards to baseball activities makes sense, as the Royals previously indicated that Hosmer will have another set of X-rays in approximately two weeks to determine the extent of his healing.
Aug 5 2014Hosmer (hand) could miss as little as three weeks while dealing with a stress fracture, per Royals manager Ned Yost. "Now that we know it's a stress fracture, 15 days to three weeks, we'll X-ray him again after two weeks, see where he's at," Yost told MLB Network Radio.Hosmer was placed on the 15-day DL on Saturday with initial prognoses suggesting he could miss up to six weeks. While Hosmer is expected to avoid surgery, the Royals will closely monitor his recovery in hopes of having him back by late-August/early-September.
Aug 2 2014Hosmer (hand) was placed on the 15-day DL on Saturday, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports. This was inevitable, with Hosmer facing up to six weeks on the shelf with a stress fracture in his right hand. Fortunately, Hosmer is expected to avoid surgery, but the Royals will have to get by with Billy Butler and Raul Ibanez at first for the time being, though they could give some consideration to Mike Carp. Left-hander Jason Vargas was activated in the corresponding move.
Aug 2 2014A CT scan revealed only a stress fracture in Hosmer's hand, and he's expected to avoid surgery, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports. The Royals did not update the previously estimated one-month absence from manager Ned Yost, so for now it's expected that Hosmer will be on the shelf until early September.
Jul 31 2014Hosmer will undergo X-rays after leaving Thursday's game due to an aggravation of his hand injury, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.Since rejoining the lineup Tuesday, Hosmer is 1-for-10 with five strikeouts. He was replaced by pinch-hitter Billy Butler in the sixth inning of Thursday's game against the Twins.
Jul 31 2014After being diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right hand, Hosmer said he may be out for six weeks, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.Royals manager Ned Yost gave an estimate of one month, so there's a bit of a disparity at this early juncture. Either way, Hosmer figures to miss most of August, leaving the Royals without a decent option at first base. The team could opt to play designated hitter Billy Butler at first, which would allow them to rotate players in the DH slot. The Royals may also use Raul Ibanez, who is having an even worse season than Butler, and is probably no better of a defensive first baseman. Looking to the minors, 29-year-old Matt Fields owns a .270/.339/.522 slash line at Triple-A Omaha. Ibanez seems most likely to benefit from added playing time, as Butler is already a regular in the lineup.
Jul 31 2014Hosmer is expected to be out for about one month due to a stress fracture in his right hand, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.Hosmer tried to play with a bruised hand the last few days, but he was removed from Thursday's contest in the sixth inning and subsequently diagnosed with a stress fracture. With Hosmer presumably out until late August or September, the Royals will likely use Raul Ibanez and Billy Butler at first base. The Royals may also explore alternatives outside of the organization, or could perhaps turn to 29-year-old Matt Fields, who owns a .270/.339/.522 slash line at Triple-A Omaha
Jul 29 2014Hosmer (hand) is back in the lineup Tuesday versus the Twins, the Kansas City Star reports.Hosmer has been dealing with a hand issue for the past week that's kept him out of action for the last four games. While he's likely not yet 100 percent, he's apparently feeling well enough to start Tuesday, as he'll bat third and man his usual first base spot. Hosmer's return pushes Billy Butler back to the DH spot, while Salvador Perez - Sunday's DH - will return to catching duties.
Jul 27 2014Hosmer (hand) remains out of the lineup Sunday against the Indians, AM 610's Josh Vernier reports.Hosmer would have been back in action if he were even 80 percent healthy, but this doesn't appear to be the case. He'll instead miss his fourth straight game, with Billy Butler manning first base for the afternoon contest. Manager Ned Yost seemed optimistic that Hosmer would return soon, however, so he'll likely be back Tuesday.
Jul 25 2014Hosmer (hand) could return to the lineup Sunday, according to manager Ned Yost, AM 610's Josh Vernier reports.Yost said that if Hosmer wasn't 80 percent healthy Sunday, he would likely wait to return until Tuesday, but it definitely sounds like owners should expect to be without him Saturday.
Jul 25 2014Hosmer (hand) remains out of the Royals' lineup Friday, Josh Vernier of FOX Sports KC reports.Hosmer's return from bruised right hand was short-lived, as he experienced "decreased grip strength" in the hand Wednesday and was restricted from swinging a bat Thursday. He said he will be more cautious about returning this time around, suggesting he could remain limited through the weekend. Raul Ibanez will draw the start at first base in his absence Friday.
Jul 24 2014Hosmer (hand) will not swing a bat Thursday, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.Making his return from a two-game absence Wednesday, Hosmer went 0-for-2 with an RBI before exiting with "decreased grip strength" in his bruised right hand. He's out of the lineup Thursday, and he said he will be more cautious about returning this time around, so it sounds like Hosmer could miss most, if not all, of the Cleveland series. Moreover, a DL stint can't be ruled out until the team sees how he responds in the coming days.
Jul 24 2014Hosmer (hand) is not in the lineup Thursday vs. the Indians, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.Hosmer made a surprise return to the lineup Wednesday after missing two games due to a right hand contusion, but it was evident he wasn't feeling quite right. He ended up leaving the contest earlier with what the Royals called "decreased grip strength in his hand," making it uncertain how many days he'll have to sit out this time around before returning to the lineup. The Royals will attempt to get by with Billy Butler at first base while the team waits for Hosmer to heal up, but a DL stint shouldn't be ruled out at this time.
Jul 23 2014Hosmer (hand) is back in the lineup for Wednesday's series finale vs. the White Sox, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.Manager Ned Yost indicated it was doubtful Hosmer would return from his hand injury before the end of the series, but the first baseman apparently checked out fine during batting practice Wednesday morning to earn the starting nod. He'll slot in to the three-hole for the Royals, nestling in between Omar Infante and Salvador Perez.
Jul 23 2014Hosmer left Wednesday's game with "decreased grip strength in his hand," Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.Hosmer missed the previous two games with what was labeled a right hand contusion, and he was lifted for a pinch hitter in the eighth inning Wednesday due to the decreased grip strength in his hand. It's a rather curious case, as a simple contusion likely wouldn't lead to trouble gripping a bat, but there has been nothing to this point to suggest he's dealing with a nerve issue. Consider Hosmer day-to-day until the team provides additional information.
Jul 22 2014Hosmer (hand) remains out of the lineup Tuesday against the White Sox, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.A late scratch from Monday's lineup due to a right hand contusion, Hosmer will sit again Tuesday as Billy Butler draws another start at first base. Consider Hosmer day-to-day ahead of Wednesday's series finale against Chicago.
Jul 21 2014Hosmer (hand) has been scratched from Monday's lineup, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports. As a late scratch just after the weekly deadline in many formats, Hosmer's removal from the lineup is poorly timed. Billy Butler will man first base Monday, while Salvador Perez is shifting to the DH spot. Hosmer is considered day-to-day after apparently suffering the injury during Sunday's 6-0 loss to Boston.
Jul 18 2014Hosmer was 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI in a losing effort against the Red Sox on Friday night.Hosmer has been heating up after a sluggish start, batting .442 in 52 July at-bats, and now has his average up to .272 while collecting 44 RBI on the season to go with six home runs.
Jul 11 2014Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Thursday's loss to the Tigers.Hosmer took over a month to hit his first long ball of 2014, but is starting to pick up the pace in terms of power, having now homered in back-to-back contests. His .113 isolated power remains the lowest mark of his major league career, but he at least appears to be trending in the right direction.
Jul 9 2014Hosmer went 1-for-2 with three walks, two runs scored and a solo home run Wednesday against the Rays.Hosmer parked his first long ball since June 15 on Wednesday, giving the Royals a 1-0 lead on Alex Cobb in the first frame. He continues to show exceptional plate discipline of late, as it was the second time this month he has logged three free passes, giving him a .485 OBP in July. There's still room for improvement, however, as his current .260 average is 13 points lower than his career mark. He'll look to build off this July momentum in the second half.
Jul 2 2014Hosmer had a fine day at the plate Tuesday, going 4-for-4 in the Royals' 10-2 loss to the Twins. You could say Hosmer needed a night like this, as he was 5-for-36 in his previous nine games. Although all of Hosmer's hits on Tuesday were singles, this could help him break out of his slump. It has been a disappointing season thus far for Hosmer, who owns a pedestrian .254/.295/.351 slash line.
Jun 16 2014Hosmer connected on his fourth homer of the season and drove in two runs in Sunday's win over the White Sox.Hosmer's first-inning blast was no cheapie, as it traveled 429 feet to give the Royals an early 2-0 lead. Though Hosmer's power totals have been slow to come along in 2014, he seems to be getting some more loft on his hits of late. Three of his four homers and 11 of his 34 RBI have come in June thus far.
Jun 10 2014Hosmer went 2-for-5 with three RBI while slugging his third home run of the year Tuesday.Hosmer, who has been struggling most of the year with a modest .259/.297/.369 slash line, had a much-needed breakout game. Hopefully this performance can get him going, as his .666 OPS is less-than-ideal.
Jun 7 2014Hosmer went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in the Royals' win over the Yankees on Saturday.Like the majority of Royals batters, Hosmer has experienced a major power outage in 2014. He had 20 doubles entering action Saturday, but the home run was only his second of the season and first May 5. He appears to be in no immediate danger of receiving the Mike Moustakas treatment and spending a stay at Triple-A Omaha. However, a demotion to a lower lineup spot is possible.
May 24 2014Hosmer went 4-for-7 with an RBI and two runs scored in the Royals' win over the Angels on Saturday. In a game that went 13 innings, the Royals had five starters deliver a multi-hit game Saturday. The lack of power he's shown to this point remains a concern, but Hosmer continues to make contact at a high rate (13.5% K%) and his batted ball profile doesn't look radically different from the past two seasons.
May 9 2014Hosmer picked up three hits on Friday facing the Mariners, along with one RBI.With his batting average now at .326 on the season, Hosmer's power nunmbers are still missing on the year. It won't be long before Hosmer goes on a power run, but in the meantime enjoy his solid statistical contributions in other categories.
May 7 2014Hosmer went 3-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 8-0 win over San Diego.Hosmer has really started to impress, as his slash line is up to a very solid .306/.349/.425. It would be nice to see a bit more power come from his bat though, as he still has just one home run on the year.
Apr 30 2014Hosmer went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI in Wednesday's victory over the Blue Jays.Hosmer has bounced back from a slow start, hitting safely in eight of his last 10 games and bringing his batting average up to .301 on the season. He continues to seek his first home run of the season, but other than that, is starting to come around for fantasy owners.
Apr 26 2014Hosmer had one hit and one RBI in four at-bats against the Orioles on Saturday. The lack of power continues to be a point of frustration for Hosmer and his owners, but a power surge is looming as the Royals' first baseman is currently hitting .300 on the season.
Apr 22 2014Hosmer went 4-for-5 with two doubles, three runs and a RBI Tuesday against the Indians.Hosmer is one of the last big-name players without a home run this season, but he's giving owners a great batting average (.311). The home runs will come at some point, but instead of hitting 20-30 bombs, he'll probably just knock out 10-20.
Apr 18 2014Hosmer went 2-for-4 with an RBI Friday against the Twins.Hosmer is now riding a five-game hit streak, posting a .400 batting average over that span. It appears he's ready to put his cold start behind him, and work towards being that top-tier first basemen that fantasy owners have been hoping for.
Apr 9 2014Hosmer was 2-for-4 with two runs scored Wednesday against the Rays.Hosmer is off to a relatively cold start despite Wednesday's two-hit performance, as he's hitting just .238 and has yet to hit his first home run of the season. He'll look to build on this performance at Target Field when the Royals hit the road for a three-game series with the Twins, starting Friday.
Jan 17 2014Hosmer and the Royals avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.6 million deal, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.Hosmer brought his batting average up to .302 during the 2013 season, adding 17 home runs and 79 RBI. At 24 years old, Hosmer has the potential to develop into the league's top tier of first basemen, especially if he can add a bit more power to his swing.
Sep 29 2013Hosmer is not in the lineup Sunday against the White Sox, the Kansas City Star reports.Salvador Perez will get the start at first base in the final game of the regular season.
Sep 25 2013Hosmer went 2-for-4 against the Mariners on Tuesday and notched his ninth multi-hit game of September.Hosmer actually leads the American League with 59 multi-hit games this season and save for a slight downturn in power, has put together a solid season for himself. If he can maintain his .300-plus batting average and increase his overall power, he'll find himself amongst the top 10 first basemen in the league next season. Considering he's only 23-years old, developing power is certainly within the realm of possibility.
Sep 23 2013Hosmer went 1-for-3 with a walk against the Rangers on Sunday and has now hit safely in six-straight games.Hosmer's season started off incredibly poorly, but when the Royals brought in George Brett as their interim hitting coach, the 23-year old first baseman's season completely turned around. He is currently batting .346 here in September and hasn't hit lower than .303 in any month beginning with June. His 17 home runs remain a bit of a disappointment, but his 33 doubles and improved plate discipline give promise for the future. While he won;t be as highly coveted next year in fantasy drafts, he'll still prove to be a solid middle-round pick with the promise of more to come.
Aug 23 2013Hosmer reached base all five times he stepped up to the plate, was a triple short of the cycle, and went 3-for-3 with a double, a home run, three RBI, three runs scored and a pair of walks against the Nationals on Friday. The turnaround for Hosmer this season has been fantastic and those who stuck with the first baseman after the first two months have been handsomely rewarded. He hasn't batted below .303 over these last three months and has hit 14 of his 15 home runs after June 13. He has easily re-established himself as one of the better young, up-and-coming first basemen here in the majors.
Aug 16 2013Hosmer hit his 14th home run of the season in the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the Tigers.Hosmer has been raking for months now, and he stayed hot during Friday's matinee. He went yard off Justin Verlander in the fourth inning, after coming into the game with just a .207 average against the right-hander.
Aug 16 2013Hosmer was 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in the Royals win over Detroit on Friday night. What's better than hitting your 13th home run in a win over the division leading Tigers on Friday afternoon? Hitting your 14th in the second game of the doubleheader to propel the Royals to a sweep. And, he added his 10th stolen base of the season for good measure. He's been on fire since the All-Star break, so enjoy the ride.
Aug 11 2013Entering Sunday's game, Hosmer has 65 hits in his last 45 games, including 11 doubles and 10 home runs. Only Adrian Beltre and Victor Martinez have more hits than Hosmer in that span, the Kansas City Star reports. While no specific credit has been given, Hosmer should definitely be sending some sort of a holiday fruit basket to George Brett come Christmas time. From the first day that Brett took over as the Royals' hitting coach (June 19), Hosmer has completely turned his season around. Though he still isn't hitting for the power we once expected, he is currently batting .299 with 12 home runs, 56 RBI and nine stolen bases, which are numbers you can appreciate from a corner infielder whom many left on the waiver wire after the first two months of the year.
Aug 5 2013Hosmer led the way in Monday's 13-0 rout of the Twins, going 3-for-5 with a home run, a double two runs, and five RBI.The homer was Hosmer's first since July 24, but it isn't as if he's been stuck in a slump, and he now owns a solid .293/.337/.439 batting line on the season. Hosmer has been seeing the ball well since the beginning of June, and his emergence is hardly news at this point.
Aug 3 2013Hosmer will start Saturday's game in right field, Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports.Hosmer has not even worked in the outfield, much less play there, since spring training, but with him hitting .305 since June 1, manager Ned Yost wanted to keep his bat in the lineup despite playing in an NL park. Hosmer will bat second Saturday against Mets starter Jeremy Hefner.
Jul 24 2013Hosmer had a big day at the plate Wednesday, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and his 10th and 11th home runs of the season.Hosmer made a costly error in the fourth inning that led to a pair of unearned runs, but he made up for it rather handsomely by providing almost all for the Royals offense in the win Wednesday. The performance bumped his average up to .287 on the year, which is much closer to the .293 he batted during his impressive rookie campaign. This turnaround can be explained by a return of good fortune for Hosmer, who's BABIP moved from an unhealthy .255 in 2012 to a more realistic .311 this season.
Jul 10 2013Hosmer went 1-for-4 with an RBI double in Tuesday's win over the Yankees.Intrepid fantasy owners who stuck with Hosmer through his brutal first two months -- or picked him up on spec after a less-intrepid owner cut him -- have been rewarded with a month-plus of outstanding play, as he's gone 45-for-142 (.317) since the start of June, with eight homers, four steals, 23 RBI and 27 runs in that span.
Jul 5 2013Hosmer went 2-for-4 with one RBI and a run scored against the A's on Friday and extended his hit-streak to seven games.Even more impressive is that this was Hosmer's third straight multi-hit game and fifth during this streak. He finally turned things on in June when he hit .303 with six home runs and 17 RBI and has continued with the momentum here in July as he is currently 7-for-17 (.412) with two home runs, four RBI and six runs scored. He's finally showing that potential everyone knew he had and the fact that he's now doing it with consistency, makes him even more valuable in fantasy leagues.
Jul 4 2013Hosmer stayed red-hot Thursday, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in a 10-7 win over the Indians.Hosmer slashed .303/.347/.541 with six home runs in June and is off to a 5-for-13 start in July with two more dingers. It's probably too late to buy low, but if you've already got Hosmer he could be in for a big second half. In other news involving former top prospects, Hosmer's teammate Mike Moustakas went 0-for-4 Thursday but quietly has 16 hits in his last 46 at-bats (.348 BA).
Jul 1 2013Hosmer went 1-for-5 with a solo home run against the Twins on Sunday. The Hosmer Revival continues and is in full force as he now has four home runs and six RBI over his last six games. Plenty of credit is going to George Brett and Pedro Grifol for helping him make the necessary adjustments, and the regular baptisms with Billy Butler's barbecue sauce are helping to keep his spirits up but remain loose. He batted .303 with six home runs, 17 RBI and 21 runs scored for the month of June and should carry this momentum into the All-Star break and finish the first half strong. If there's still an owner in your league who remains a doubter, you should make him a buy-low offer and see if you can pry the slugger away.
Jun 29 2013Hosmer went 3-for-4 with two home runs, three RBI and three runs scored against the Twins on Friday.Hosmer continues to turn his season around with his first multi-homer game of the season. He now has five home runs and 16 RBI in the month of June, while kicking in four stolen bases. This is the type of production we expected to see him provide all season, so should he maintain this level for the duration of the season, his first two months might just be forgiven.
Jun 26 2013Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a pair of runs scored against the Braves on Tuesday.Hosmer continued his resurgence and has now hit safely in nine of his last 12 games. Over that span, he is batting .294 (15-for-51) with three home runs, nine RBI and nine runs scored. Manager Ned Yost has moved him back down to the three-hole in the order so if he continues to hit like this, we should see an uptick in his RBI production. Given his struggles over the first two months of the season, he's not out of the woods just yet, but he's definitely become more of a viable option at first base than he's been.
Jun 21 2013Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a double and solo home run against the White Sox on Friday. It was another strong game for Hosmer who is now batting .317 (20-for-63) with five doubles, two home runs, nine RBI, 13 runs scored and three stolen bases since being moved into the two-hole of the lineup. This run of games has picked his overall average up to .277 and it appears as if some of the power is starting to come back. It's time again for you to consider him a viable option as a regular corner infielder again and he can finally be safely left in your active lineup.
Jun 14 2013Hosmer went 1-for-4 with his second home run of the season, a solo shot off Jake Odorizzi in the seventh inning, and a walk against the Rays on Thursday.Hosmer has now hit safely in seven of his last eight games and is batting .281 with a home run, one double, four RBI, seven runs scored and a stolen base since moving into the second spot of the batting order. The show of power is definitely encouraging as Hosmer's ground ball rate (62.2-percent in June) has been completely ridiculous for someone who should be clearing the fences a little more often. If he can continue to cut down on the ground balls, we may be able to get a little better run production out of him, but it's going to take more than just one good 10-game stretch before he can be relied upon on a regular basis.
Jun 12 2013Hosmer went 2-for-5 with a run scored and a walk-off RBI single in Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Tigers. Both of Hosmer's hits proved crucial, as he ultimately scored on his ninth-inning single after Lorenzo Cain drove him home with a two-run homer off Tigers closer Jose Valverde to tie the game. Though Hosmer's average remains a healthy .274, a vast uptick his ground ball percentage has essentially sapped him of all of his power production. He has just one home run and an anemic .339 slugging percentage on the season.
Jun 11 2013Hosmer went 1-for-4 with a run scored against the Tigers on Monday and extended his sitting streak to five games, raising his average up to .276 on the season.Since the Royals went with their sabermetric-friendly lineup and moved Hosmer to the two-hole, he's batting .381 (8-for-21) with three walks, three RBI and seven runs scored. Obviously we'd all like to see him hit for more power, as he has just one home run on the season, but fixing his swing and lowering his ground ball rate are what's most important right now. Once he is more comfortable, the power should follow.
Jun 8 2013Hosmer went 2-for-2 with a double, two runs scored, a RBI, and two walks on Saturday against the Astros.Hosmer has now strung together three straight multi-hit games and is now hitting .277 on the season. Despite the disappointing amount of home runs this year, it is promising to see that the young slugger has not been pressing too much at the plate recently and showed nice patience on Saturday taking two walks.
Jun 7 2013Hosmer went 2-for-4 with two runs scored against the Astros on Friday.Hosmer now has back-to-back multi-hit games since manager Ned Yost turned his lineup card over to the sabermetricians who put the first baseman in the two-hole of the order. While you'd like to see Hosmer hitting in a more RBI-friendly, power-hitting spot, it's more important for them to get him hitting with consistency first and then worrying about power. It's a nice start and he's now batting .270 on the year, but he has a lot more to do before gaining the trust of his owners again.
Jun 1 2013Hosmer went 3-for-5 with a run scored and a steal in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Rangers. The stolen base was Hosmer's fourth on the season, but he's still sitting on just one homer for the year. While the power numbers haven't been there, the 23-year-old is hitting at more consistent rate than he did last season.
May 29 2013Hosmer is out of the Royals' lineup Wednesday in St. Louis, the Kansas City Star reports. The lack of a DH in a National League park has pushed Billy Butler into the field at first base. While Hosmer is getting a day off, expect him to return to the lineup for Thursday's series finale.
May 20 2013Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a double, one RBI, a run scored, a stolen base, and a walk during Sunday's loss to the A's.The season trudges along for the the underwhelming Royals first baseman. Through 16 games in May, he is batting .254 with one home run, four RBI and seven runs scored. In addition to the one long ball, he has just one double and one triple for a disappointing .095 ISO for the month. With such minimal production and an apparent lack of growth, Hosmer has become one of the more disappointing up-and-comers and is barely worth a fantasy roster spot as a corner infielder. If he doesn't find a way to break out soon, the Royals could begin to seek out alternatives at the position.
May 9 2013Hosmer hit his first homer of the season, a two-run blast, in Thursday's 6-2 win at Baltimore. The home run was just Hosmer's third extra-base hit in his last 49 at-bats. Kansas City tinkered with its lineup Thursday, as Hosmer hit fifth behind Alex Gordon and Billy Butler. If they stick with that order and Hosmer heats up, he'd have opportunities for a ton of RBI.
May 6 2013Hosmer went 0-for-5 and left five men on base during Sunday's 6-5 extra-innings win over the White Sox.Hosmer's hits are coming in little three or four-game bunches but then quickly follows them up with an empty performance like this one. His batting average now sits at .259 and while that's actually a marked improvement from where he was at this time last year, he still hasn't hit a home run this season.
Apr 29 2013Hosmer combined to go 2-for-9 with one RBI during Sunday's doubleheader against the Indians.Hosmer has followed up his little four-game hit streak with a 2-for-12 over his last three games, keeping his average down at .266 for the season. He's taken strides to improve his line drive rate this season and that has obviously helped keep his average and on-base percentage at reasonably respectable levels, but he continues to sport 2.50 GB/FB which is a disaster for someone who is supposed to be a power-hitter. If Hosmer doesn't reduce his ground ball rate from the current 51-percent mark soon, you should start shopping him around your league to someone who might believe in a comeback that doesn't appear to be happening anytime soon.
Apr 25 2013Hosmer went 1-for-1 with two RBI and a pair of walks during Wednesday's 7-5 loss to the Tigers.Hosmer is now 5-for-14 (.357) with a run scored and two RBI since being moved back into the cleanup spot over the last four games. While we're not sold on a complete rebound here finally, it is still worth noting that he is ever-so-slightly improving at the plate. Should the trend continue, he might just play his way back into our good graces.
Apr 17 2013Hosmer is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Braves, according to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star. With the Royals playing in an NL park, Hosmer manned first base Tuesday while Billy Butler sat out. However, with the Royals facing left-hander Mike Minor on Wednesday, the two will switch places. The Royals are off Thursday, but expect both players to be in the lineup when they kick off their next series Friday against the Red Sox.
Apr 14 2013Hosmer (quad) is back in the lineup Sunday against Toronto, Blue Jays radio broadcaster Mike Wilner reports.Hosmer had missed the previous two games with right quadriceps soreness, an injury he first experienced during spring training. He may be given another day off in the coming days, but appears to be set to resume relatively regular play beginning Sunday, giving his owners a better indication about his availability for this week's slate of games before lineups need to be set.
Apr 13 2013Hosmer is suffering through a sore right quadriceps and will miss his second game in a row Saturday against Toronto, the Kansas City Star reports. The issue first arose in spring training, which Hosmer aggravated earlier in the week. A number of shifts have allowed Jarrod Dyson to enter the lineup and man center field for the Royals. Meanwhile, consider Hosmer day-to-day for now, with hopes that he'll be back in the fold sooner rather than later.
Apr 12 2013Hosmer is not in the starting lineup Friday agains the Blue Jays, Blue Jays radio broadcaster Mike Wilner reports.Hosmer will sit with lefty J.A. Happ on the mound for the Jays, giving way to Miguel Tejada to make a start at first base. Hosmer is off to a better start than last season with a .269 average through nine games, but he's failed to generate much power thus far, as just one of his seven hits has gone for extra bases.
Apr 8 2013Hosmer will start for the first time in three games Monday against Minnesota, batting sixth in the order as Kansas City's first baseman.Hosmer stepped aside in the Royals' previous two games to ensure the big bat of Billy Butler was in the lineup in a National League park. A monster 4-for-5 performance Friday aside, Hosmer has recorded just one hit in 10 at-bats this season. Nevertheless, he'll look to bounce back from a disappointing sophomore campaign, in which he posted a subpar .232/.304/.359 slash line.
Apr 7 2013Hosmer is not in the lineup Sunday against the Phillies, the Kansas City Star reports. With the Royals playing in a National League park and in need of getting their best hitter in Billy Butler in the lineup, Hosmer will get the day off while Butler mans first base. Hosmer has gotten off to a nice start to the season with five hits in 15 at-bats, but most of that damage was done in a 4-for-5 performance Friday night.
Apr 5 2013Hosmer had a huge day, going 4-for-5, and adding a walk, with a pair of runs scored, and three RBI on the afternoon. There was some question whether he would even start with the Royals playing in a National League park, and needing a spot in the lineup for DH, Billy Butler, but his performance today should make it necessary for Kansas City to work him into the lineup if at all possible.
Apr 4 2013Hosmer may not have a spot in the lineup against the Phillies this weekend, the Kansas City Star reports.Billy Butler is going to play first base, so Hosmer will either line up in the outfield or work as a pinch-hitter off the bench. We would expect the Royals to stick with Butler as their first baseman whenever they are in a National League park and cannot utilize a designated hitter.
Apr 2 2013Hosmer went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base during Monday's loss to the White Sox.With the way White Sox starter Chris Sale was pitching, it was a wonder anyone on the Royals got a hit. Hosmer lined a single to right in the seventh against Sale but was caught in a double play ground ball from Jeff Francoeur two batters later. His stolen base in the ninth, following a walk, gave some added encouragement that he will continue to run as he has in the past, so while he may struggle with his average again, at least he should kick in double-digit stolen bases by season's end.
Mar 27 2013Hosmer will likely play in the outfield Thursday against the Reds in preparation for interleague games where the Royals are on the road and lose the flexibility of the DH.Billy Butler can only handle first base defensively, so Hosmer will likely get another look in right field as Jeff Francoeur figures to lose playing time in those instances of Hosmer proves to be adequate. Since returning from a quad strain earlier this week, Hosmer is 1-for-6 with a pair of runs scored.
Mar 23 2013Hosmer is dealing with a minor strain of the right quadriceps, the Kansas City Star reports.A minor strain sounds worse than the "soreness" that was first reported, although Hosmer should still be able to return by Opening Day. He's expected to miss the next few days, and fantasy owners will likely want to keep an eye on him as the season approaches.
Mar 23 2013Hosmer is dealing with some soreness in his right quad and will not be in the Royals' lineup Saturday, the Kansas City Star's Bob Dutton reports.Additionally, Hosmer isn't on the travel roster for Sunday's game. This obviously isn't the sort of thing you want to hear nine days before the start of the season, but it sounds pretty minor, so Hosmer should be able to return for Opening Day. That being said, keep an eye on his progress if you haven't drafted yet or already have an investment in Hosmer.
Mar 18 2013In his first Cactus League game since returning from the WBC, Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and two strikeouts.Hosmer has a lot to do this season to help fantasy owners forget about last season's disaster. The fact that he is batting .407 with two doubles, a home run and nine RBI this spring certainly helps, but spring numbers are always taken with a grain of salt. Should he learn to beat the defensive shift and increase his BABIP this season, he should prove to be an excellent option at first base.
Mar 7 2013Hosmer will replace the injured Mark Teixeira on Team USA for the World Baseball Classic, the Kansas City Star reports. "I played for USA Baseball before (in a 2010 Pan-American Games qualifier)," Hosmer said. "I'm all about the experience. Every time I go, it gets better and better."So long as he doesn't get injured during the series, playing in the WBC might actually help Hosmer find a groove at the plate, which would in turn start him off on the right foot this season. A fast start would certainly help after last year's struggles.
Mar 3 2013Hosmer's two doubles and home run during Saturday's Cactus League game put him at 8-for-17 (.471) this spring with five runs and seven RBI. "I'm laying off pitches that I was swinging at last year," Hosmer told Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star. "For me, that's the biggest part."Improved plate discipline is always nice, but that wasn't Hosmer's problem last season as his numbers in that department were as good, if not better than his from 2011. How well he adapts to the defensive shift teams are employing will be a key factor for him as well as the need for cleaner contact to help raise that .255 BABIP from last year. The fact that both doubles and the home run were to the opposite field is an encouraging start. The strong spring is much-needed and Hosmer should be a nice bargain in the middle rounds at a fairly deep first base position.
Feb 19 2013Hosmer will get some playing time in the outfield again this spring, according to the Kansas City Star, but manager Ned Yost indicated that the move is "just for depth and protection."Last spring, Hosmer saw time in the outfield as Yost thought it would be a great way to keep both Hosmer and Billy Butler in the lineup during interleague games in NL parks. However, the idea was scrapped after just two games due to concerns regarding weakened defense. That doesn't mean they won't try it again if he does better this spring, but don't expect Hosmer to pick up and additional position eligibility.
Feb 17 2013The lineup manager Ned Yost will use to open Cactus League games will feature Hosmer back in the three-hole, according to a report in the Kansas City Star.Hosmer was bumped down in the order last year during his prolonged slump and Alex Gordon was moved to the three-hole to fill-in. Moving Hosmer back up will shift Gordon back to the leadoff spot, a configuration Yost is hoping to use all season. Hosmer's poor season last year has somewhat hurt his draft value thus far, but a return to a much more productive spot in the lineup and a solid spring will certainly see him start to move up draft boards quickly.
Oct 2 2012Hosmer (shoulder) is not in the lineup Tuesday, Bob Dutton of the KC Star reports. We'll assume his status for Wednesday's season finale is up in the air as well. Billy Butler is playing first base Tuesday night.
Oct 1 2012Hosmer is not in the starting lineup Monday, the Kansas City Star reports.Hosmer was scheduled to be reexamined Monday and potentially start against the Tigers, but it looks like he'll need at least another day before he gets back into the lineup.
Sep 30 2012Hosmer (shoulder) is not in the starting lineup Sunday against the Indians, the Indians' official Twitter page reports.Hosmer, who is dealing with a slight tear in his right rotator cuff, has now missed three straight games due to the injury. He may still return before the end of the season, but in the meantime, Billy Butler will draw the start at first base and bat cleanup Sunday.
Sep 30 2012Hosmer will be reexamined Monday and could play against the Tigers, Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports.Apparently Hosmer's slight tear in his right rotator cuff is more of a fraying, so perhaps he'll be given the green light to play in the final series of the season.
Sep 29 2012Hosmer (shoulder) remains out of the lineup Saturday, the Kansas City Star's Bob Dutton reports.Hosmer is still aiming to return before the end of the season, although the Royals aren't playing for anything at this point so there's no reason to rush him back if he's still sore.
Sep 29 2012Hosmer (shoulder) has a slight tear in his right rotator cuff but may still return before the end of the season, the Kansas City Star's Bob Dutton reports.Hosmer is left-handed so this shouldn't affect his play in the field too much. The real question is whether he can manage the pain when hitting, and at the moment there isn't a clear answer.
Sep 28 2012Hosmer (shoulder) won't play Friday, but he's hoping to return before the end of the season, the Kansas City Star reports.Hosmer's injury, suffered Thursday, is officially a strained right shoulder, but Royals manager Ned Yost said Hosmer "pinched his (rotator) cuff in the back." Hosmer said nothing's torn and that, "It's nothing too serious." He's expected to undergo a precautionary MRI.
Sep 27 2012Hosmer was removed from Thursday's game in the third inning with an apparent injury, Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports.Details of Hosmer's setback were not immediately available, but Hosmer was unable to continue playing. Expect an update on his status as further details are released.
Sep 27 2012Hosmer suffered a strained right shoulder in Thursday's game against the Royals, Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports.Hosmer will be reevaluated Friday in Cleveland, but with the Royals out of playoff contention, this could end his season. For now, consider Hosmer day-to-day.
Sep 21 2012Hosmer went 1-for-4 and had the game-winning RBI during Thursday's win over the White Sox.Despite the heroics, Hosmer has just been a disaster here in his sophomore season. He showed some promise in August when he hit .287 for the month, but has since fallen back into his rut with a .232 September. His struggles this season will help keep him undervalued next year and he'll be able to be acquired for a much cheaper price. However, it might still take a bit of a leap of faith in order to trust him again after such a disappointing year.
Sep 8 2012Hosmer will not be in the lineup Saturday, the Kansas City Star's Bob Dutton reports.Hosmer's having a rough season, but he had a .771 OPS in the month of August, and could be in for a strong finish. Despite all the struggles this year, he's maintained solid plate discipline (84:49 K:BB), and his outlook for the future still looks bright.
Sep 6 2012Hosmer returned to the lineup on Wednesday and went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and two stolen bases against the Rangers.Hosmer took a seat against a left-hander again the other day as manager Ned Yost wants to optimize his lineup and play spoiler the rest of the way. Hosmer will likely sit against most of the tougher lefties they face this month, but with 10 home runs and 44 RBI against righties this season, he should be in the lineup at least on a semi-regular basis.
Sep 4 2012Hosmer is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rangers, according to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star.Rangers starter and lefty Matt Harrison has allowed just a .475 OPS against left-handed batters this season; so Hosmer, who owns just a .592 OPS against southpaws in 2012, will open on the bench. Billy Butler will serve as the Royals' first baseman on Tuesday.
Aug 27 2012Hosmer went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI against Boston on Sunday.Hosmer finished the day batting .241, the highest his average has been since April 6. After bumbling his way to a .231/.299/.371 slash line in the first half, he's made some adjustments and has posted a slash line of .263/.338/.380 since the All Star break. The season has been a wash-out for the promising, young first baseman, but hopefully these signs of life are showing that there is further improvement on the horizon.
Aug 24 2012Hosmer went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run against the Red Sox on Friday.Hosmer has now hit safely in six of his last seven games and is batting .409 with two home runs and three RBI in that span. While this season has been a huge disappointment, Hosmer can build up his keeper value here with a strong finish to the year. If he can continue this current hitting trend then he could also prove valuable if you're competing for a title now and have been stashing him away over the last few months.
Aug 17 2012Hosmer is not in the starting lineup Friday, the Chicago Tribune's Mark Gonzales reports.Hosmer and Mike Moustakas are both out of the lineup against Chicago. You'd like to see Hosmer get hot and finish the season with a bang to create momentum for next year, but realistically that probably won't happen. It's been a lost season on paper, but he's a 22-year-old with over 900 big league at-bats so the future still looks bright.
Aug 3 2012Hosmer went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, a home run and three RBI against the Indians on Thursday. It was a strong game for the embattled Royals first baseman whose three-run shot in the first help break the game open and give the Royals a comfortable lead to open the the game. But given the rest of his season, it's going to take more than one game for Hosmer's owners to jump back onto his bandwagon. He remains a valuable commodity in keeper leagues, but unless he shows some consistency in the coming weeks, this whole season has been a bust. Remember, he's only 22 years old and has a tremendous future in front of him.
Jul 31 2012Hosmer is batting just .232 on the season and hasn't hit a home run in 110 at-bats.It's been a terrible second year for the 22-year old first baseman as he continues to struggle with consistency at the plate. Still, he is trying to stay positive and use the experience as something to learn from more than anything else and feels that it will help him and the rest of the young Royals down the road. "I know that's not what people in Kansas City want to hear," he told the Kansas City Star. "And trust me, we're not the ones who want to be saying it. But I do think this really will help us. When guys are struggling in the future, we'll know how to get out of it a lot quicker." The toughest part for Hosmer here is that all of his peripherals remain on par with what he did last year save for a ridiculously low BABIP this season. He's actually been more selective at the plate, and is just failing to make solid contact with pitches inside the zone. Slumps are all a part of the game and Hosmer is too young and too talented to give up on at this stage of his career. If you are in a keeper or dynasty league he should be a top trade target for you right now.
Jul 24 2012Hosmer went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base against the Angels on Monday.Hosemer has now hit safely in his last five games after being dropped down in the order. He has three multi-hit games and is batting .421 in that span with three runs scored and a stolen base. No power, but hopefully that comes as he starts to relax at the plate more.
Jul 20 2012As expected, Hosmer was moved down to the sixth spot in the order and went 2-for-4 with a run scored on Thursday against the Mariners. After batting .160 with 16 strikeouts since July 1, manager Ned Yost stated that a change was necessary. While it's been rumored, the team does not want to send Hosmer down. He will be given the opportunity to straighten things out with the big club and moving down in the order is a good start. "He's battling through a lot of different things," Yost said. “Some of it's mechanics; some of it's a little bit of confidence; some of it's a little bit of pressure he's putting himself to produce in that three-hole." Including Thursday's two-hit performance, Hosmer has at least one hit in his last 19 games when batting sixth, so at least it's a step in the right direction
Jul 19 2012Ned Yost said that he would likely move Hosmer down in the batting order for Thursday's series finale with the Mariners, the Kansas City Star reports. There appeared to be some hope on the horizon when Yost actually moved Hosmer back to the three-hole a few weeks prior to the All Star break, but he slipped right back into his slump after about a week's time. He is currently on a 2-for-22 skid and has a slash line of .222/.292/.356 in what has been a very disappointing season.
Jul 17 2012Hosmer was back in the lineup and batting third on Monday, going 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base against the Mariners.Manager Ned Yost went back to the well despite facing another lefty and found a bit of success. Hosmer's struggles this season have been painful for fantasy owners, but there's just too much there to cut bait still. If you have a more consistent option, then stash the under-achieving 22-year old for now and hopefully you'll have better luck with him during the second half.
Jul 15 2012Hosmer is not in the starting lineup Sunday against the White Sox, the Royals' official Twitter page reports.Billy Butler will start at first base while Yuniesky Betancourt acts as DH and Chris Getz mans second. Hosmer, who went 0-for-10 in the first two games after the All-Star break, will sit against lefty Chris Sale.
Jul 5 2012Hosmer went 2-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI against the Blue Jays on Thursday. The three RBI were his first in six games but with hits in eight of his last 10 games, he appears to be finishing the first half of the season on a high note. As disappointing as his first half has been, Hosmer should be considered a strong buy-low candidate to help you make a championship run int he second half.
Jul 3 2012Hosmer went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a double and a walk during Monday's 11-3 thrashing of the Blue Jays.Hosmer has put together a nice, seven-game hit streak recently with three multi-hit games in his last four. He's been looking a lot more comfortable at the plate and is back in the three-hole where he belongs. The average is up to .237 and climbing. If there is a frustrated Hosmer owner in your league, you could probably acquire him for cheaper than he really should be. Look for him to improve across the board in the second half.
Jul 2 2012Hosmer went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base against the twins on Sunday.Hosmer has now hit safely in seven straight games with three multi-hit performances in that span. He's brought the batting average up to .233, the highest it's been since April 8, but with just one home runs in his last 15 games, the production is still lagging. Baby steps to improvement, but improvement nonetheless.
Jun 30 2012Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a double in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader with the Twins.Hosmer's batting average continues to climb ever so slightly even though he's spent a large part of the season below the Mendoza Line. With only nine homers on the season, Hosmer hasn't made the power jump some may have expected in his second season. Still, given his top prospect pedigree and splendid rookie season, he remains a good buy-low candidate in fantasy circles.
Jun 25 2012Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a homer in his return to the lineup Monday night.Royals manager Ned Yost gave Hosmer a day off Sunday and it appeared to pay off, as the second-year first baseman went deep for the ninth time this season with an eighth-inning blast off of Alex Cobb. Although he's having his best month of the season in June, Hosmer still hasn't replicated his production from 2011 yet as he entered Monday night with a .704 OPS in his last 20 games and a .640 mark for the season.
Jun 25 2012Manager Ned Yost said that Hosmer's absence from the lineup on Sunday was simply just a day off due to the weather, according to the Kansas City Star."It's as simple as that," Yost said when responding to questions about Hosmer being replaced in the lineup again. While the weather makes for an easy excuse, the fact that Hosmer was 2-for-18 (.111) heading into Sunday cannot be ignored. He is batting just .213 on the season with just a .281 OBP and an even more disappointing .360 slugging percentage. With interleague play now over, he should slot right back into everyday first base duties and hopefully find a way out of this season-long slump.
Jun 14 2012Hosmer hit a two-run homer in Thursday's win over Milwaukee.Hosmer has been back in the cleanup spot for the entire series against the Brewers and it looks like it's starting to pay off. It was just his third home run since April 25, but Hosmer is now batting .300 for the month of June and has almost surpassed his production for all of May.
Jun 14 2012Hosmer was back in the cleanup spot for the Royals during the first two games of their series with the Milwaukee Brewers. After the painfully slow start to the season, manager Ned Yost tried to alleviate some of the pressure off of his star second-year player and moved him down to the seventh spot for a while. But with Hosmer starting to come around and the rest of the offense sitting stagnant, Yost has moved Hosmer back to his regular spot in the order. Fantasy-wise, this is obviously great news, as Hosmer will see plenty of RBI opportunities and have protection in the lineup from Jeff Francoeur, who should also benefit from the switch.
Jun 9 2012Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the Royals' loss to the Pirates on Saturday. He manned right field in this one with Billy Butler playing first in the NL park. After a slow start to the season, Hosmer is now on an 11-game hit streak. Manager Ned Yost should continue to play around with defensive alignments to keep Hosmer and Butler in the lineup in DH-less arenas as long as both stay hot.
Jun 7 2012Hosmer went 1-for-3 against the Twins on Wednesday to extend his hit streak to nine games.Hosmer is batting .323 with five runs scored, two home runs and six RBI during this streak and has picked his average up to .220 on the year. While he seems to be turning things around, he only has one multi-hit game over the nine contests.
Jun 6 2012In preparation for interleague play, Hosmer was taking fly balls in right field during warm-ups prior to Wednesday's game, according to Bob Fescoe of 610 Sports Radio - KC on Twitter. It looks as if the Royals are going ahead with the plan they outlined during spring training of having Hosmer play right field so that Billy Butler's bat could remain in the lineup during interleague in NL parks. Jeff Francoeur will move to center to accommodate the switch. If your league has a five-game eligibility minimum, then this should add outfield eligibility to Hosmer, thus increasing his overall value.
Jun 6 2012Hosmer went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base against the Twins on Tuesday.Hosmer has now hit in eight straight games and is batting .321 with five runs scored, two home runs, six RBI and two stolen bases in that span. With a slight tweak in his appraoch at the plate, Hosmer has found the success we've all been expecting. While Ned Yost probably doesn't want to "fix it if it ain't broke," it may not be long before Hosmer returns to the clean-up spot in the batting order.
Jun 4 2012Hosmer went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a stolen base against the A's on Sunday. While the home run was Hosmer's seventh on the year, it was just his first since April 25, a span of 26 games since he last went yard. The season has been a huge disappointment for Hosmer's owners who were banking on an improvement of last season's stellar totals, but things just might be turning around for the better. He's now hit safely in his last six contests and has picked the average up to .214 on the year. He has a long way to go still, but this is, at least, a good starting point to turn his season around.
May 28 2012Moved up to the sixth spot in the order, Hosmer went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts against the Orioles on Sunday.Hosmer had been dropped as low as eighth in the batting order over the past week and responded with a five-game hit streak with two multi-hit performances in that span. Unfortunately, this move back up prompted him to return to his pressing ways and resulted in a step back. Hopefully this is just a temporary setback as Hosmer has plenty of work to do to gain the trust of his fantasy owners again.
May 28 2012Hosmer hit a two run homer Monday against the Indians, marking his sixth home run of the season.Hosmer had not hit a home run since April 25th, so it was encouraging to see him finally leave the park. He is showing signs of coming out of his season-long slump, something fantasy owners have long been waiting for.
May 27 2012Hosmer went 3-for-4 with a run scored, a double, and two RBI against the Orioles on Saturday. It looks like the move to the bottom of the order has cleared Hosmer's head a bit. He's now riding a five-game hit streak with two runs scored and four RBI and is hitting .474 in that span. The home runs will come soon enough, but fantasy owners can breathe a sigh of relief here as he appears to have turned a corner finally.
May 23 2012Hosmer went 3-for-4 Wednesday, turning in an RBI double and a stolen base as the Royals were bombed by the Yankees. After sitting out last Friday's game against Arizona, Hosmer has reached base in five straight outings. Wednesday marked his first multi-hit night of the streak, though he ended the game with season splits of .191/.260/.333.
May 19 2012Hosmer is back in the lineup Saturday for the Royals, Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports.Hosmer was given the day off on Friday after manager Ned Yost thought he was pressing a bit at the plate. The season has begun disastrously for Hosmer, and Yost and the Royals are hoping Hosmer will be invigorated by the day of rest.
May 18 2012Hosmer will not start the series opener against Arizona on Friday, the Kansas City Star reports.Hosmer was on the bench Thursday, snapping a streak of 77 consecutive games started, which was the eighth-longest active streak in baseball. But manager Ned Yost wants him to stay on the bench Friday with left-hander Joe Saunders on the mound and keep his head clear for right now. "He's been doing a great job of staying positive, but I think it's time he just sits back and takes it easy," Yost said. "The results aren't showing. He's probably hit 15-to-18 line outs where if he'd just found a hole with half of those, he'd be hitting .270. So when you don't have a lot of luck, it tends to weigh you down a little bit, so this is good chance to sit back and clear his head." Hopefully the time off will do him some good and he will be back in the lineup Saturday, ready to make a fresh start.
May 17 2012Hosmer is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Orioles, MLB.com reports. It's been a difficult sophomore campaign for Hosmer, whose batting average plummeted to .174 after a 0-for-7 performance in Wednesday's 15-inning loss. Thursday will just be an off day for Hosmer, but fantasy owners are certainly losing patience with the young first baseman.
May 15 2012Hitting out of the two-hole on Monday, Hosmer went 0-for-4 and saw his batting average drop to .174 on the season.Ned Yost is trying to mix things up in the lineup to get Hosmer going, swapping him and Alex Gordon this time. No word on whether Yost will continue this, but last season, Hosmer saw 22 plate appearances out of the second spot in the order and went 4-for-21 (.190) with a triple, a walk and three RBI, so it's not like Yost is fishing in populated waters here.
May 12 2012Hosmer returned to the lineup on Friday and went 0-for-3, dropping his average to .176 on the season.Hosmer has been a huge disappointment to fantasy owners this season and can't seem to find a break here. Opposing teams are employing a defensive shift, he's seeing fewer fastballs and being fooled with more changeups, and a .165 BABIP isn't helping much either. The rest of his batted ball data is completely in line with everything he did last year and he's not exactly free-swinging at the plate either. Right now he's falling behind in counts and swinging defensively which is preventing him from making solid contact. He figures to right the ship soon enough as he's too good not to. Fantasy owners just have to be patient.
May 12 2012Hosmer was dropped from fourth to sixth in the batting order Saturday, Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports.Given his .176 average, this shouldn't come as a surprise. That said, with a .165 BABIP, we expect Hosmer to eventually turn things around and likely move his way back up the order.
May 9 2012Hosmer is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, the Royals' official Twitter feed reports.Billy Butler is making a rare start at first base, while Hosmer joins Mike Moustakas on the bench for the Royals on Wednesday night in the wake of a .181/.253/.353 line through the team's first 29 games this season.
May 1 2012Hosmer has said that he would consider bunting more to counter the defensive shift teams are employing when he is up to bat, the Kansas City Star reports. Both Hosmer and Alex Gordon discussed it, although Gordon has had much more success poking the ball into left lately. It's definitely something to look into, but as hitting coach Kevin Seitzer said, "Those two guys get paid to swing the bat." Hosmer might try it if he is leading off an inning or there is no one on base, but he knows to swing away with runners in scoring position.
Apr 30 2012Hosmer went 0-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI on Sunday and is now mired in a 0-for-15 slump.Hosmer started well after manager Ned Yost swapped him into the clean-up spot, but he has really struggled over the last few games and is batting just .188 on the year. With all of his batted ball data on par with last season's totals, it is just a matter of time before the bounces start to go his way. He has just a .164 BABIP right now and that will certainly regress back to the mean. When it does, fantasy owners will be looking at a substantial increase in production across the board. Be patient.
Apr 25 2012Hosmer went 2-for-3 with a two run home run while batting cleanup in Wednsday's 8-2 win over the Indians.Hosmer entered the game batting just .194 with three RBI from the four spot over the last eight games. Manager Ned Yost has made an effort to shuffle the lineup and it might be paying off. Hosmer's bat has started to come to life with three home runs over his last five games. On the season, Hosmer is batting .225 with five home runs and 12 RBI.
Apr 24 2012Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a solo home run during Monday's loss to Toronto. It looks like Hosmer's bat is finally starting to wake up. This was his second home run in three games and his first multi-hit game since April 8. Though it's only been a few games, it looks as if Ned Yost's decision to drop him to the cleanup spot has been the catalyst he's needed.
Apr 22 2012Hosmer was moved down to the cleanup spot Saturday and finished 1-for-4 with a two-run home run.Given the fact that the Royals still lost the game, we're not sure how long manager Ned Yost plans to stick with this lineup configuration. However, since Hosmer and Alex Gordon (who moved to second in the order) both seemed to excel in the face of change, it will probably stick for at least a few more games. Hopefully this is the spark Hosmer needs to start hitting like he did in March.
Apr 17 2012Hosmer went 0-for-3 with a walk during Monday's loss to the Tigers and is now batting just .200 for the season. Not the start everyone was expecting, especially after crushing the ball all spring long. Though he has hit safely in four of his last five games, he is just 4-for-26 over his last seven games and has no home runs and just three RBI to show for it. Things will obviously pick up for Hosmer soon and it is far too early to even think about giving up on him. The positive in this, though, is that Hosmer only has three strikeouts in that span. He is not up there hacking away or pressing too much at the plate. The bounces will go his way soon enough.
Apr 9 2012Hosmer went 2-for-5 with three runs scored, three RBI, a stolen base and connected for his second home run of the season. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Well maybe here's the exception to the rule when people try to discount spring training numbers. Hosmer is hitting just as he did down in Arizona and hasn't skipped a beat since the season began. He'll cool down at some point but for now you can sit back and enjoy the ride.
Apr 8 2012Hosmer went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI while hitting his first home run of the season during Saturday's victory over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: And so the season begins. Hosmer had an outstanding spring and looks to carry that momentum into the beginning of the season. He should prove to be a fantastic option at first base for fantasy owners and could easily crack the elite category with a strong year.
Mar 28 2012Hosmer belted a pair of two-run home runs and finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI during Tuesday's win over the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: If there was any doubt about Hosmer's readiness for his sophomore campaign, you can put that to bed. A .373 average with four home runs and 22 RBI over 67 plate appearances says it all. He's also managed to draw eight walks and steal a pair of bases. Hosmer should be considered in all leagues just after the top first basemen are off the board.
Mar 25 2012Hosmer played the final three innings of Friday's exhibition game in right field. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The move is, obviously, designed to keep Hosmer and Billy Butler in the lineup together during interleague games on the road. "I'm going to try to get (Hosmer) in right field, or the outfield, three times this spring," manager Ned Yost said. "I just want him to have some experience out there85I don't want to throw him out there cold turkey (in the regular season)." As if Hosmer wasn't going to be coveted enough this season, but the potential to add eligibility in the outfield would make him that much more enticing.
Mar 24 2012Hosmer is expected to play right field during Friday's exhibition game according to Bob Dutton on Twitter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to Dutton the Royals plan on trying Hosmer out in the outfield atleast three to four times this spring. While it seems unlikely that this will be something we see during the regular season, we can always hope that Hosmer gets an even bigger fantasy boost with additional position eligibility.
Mar 23 2012Hosmer went 2-for-4 and plated his 17th RBI of the spring on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: His average is up to .372 and he seems poised to improve upon last season's successful rookie campaign. Consider Hosmer a solid option once the top tier of first basemen are gone. He will be well worth it.
Mar 19 2012Hosmer finished 3-for-3 with a run scored, two RBI and launched his second home run of the spring off Josh Tomlin in the first inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Not only does Hosmer have 15 RBI to go with his two home runs, three doubles and .361 average, but he's also drawn seven walks over 43 plate appearances, good for a 16.3% walk rate this spring. There were some concerns over his plate discipline and potential for hacking after last season, but he is quickly putting those to bed. If there's one negative we can put on him right now, it's that he's continuing to drive his price up on draft day.
Mar 16 2012Hosmer finished 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and RBI to help lead the Royals past the Dodgers 8-5 on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer now has 12 RBI this spring after a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly helped add to his total. He's batting .345 so far and looks locked in at the plate. If this trend continues into the season, Hosmer has a good chance of joining the elite class at the first base position this year.
Mar 14 2012Hosmer was removed from Monday's game after injuring his shoulder on a diving stop in the fifth inning according to the team's official site. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After having just made a diving grab on one play, Hosmer made another spectacular grab on a Nate Schierholtz grounder, rolled over onto his back and flipped the ball to a covering Jake Odorizzi. He laid on the ground for a few minutes as it looked like he jammed his shoulder. He was removed from the game and sent to the trainer's room but has already been cleared to play on Tuesday.
Mar 13 2012Hosmer went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run on Sunday against the A's. He finished with four RBI on the day. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer has been having a relatively quiet spring, but yesterday's contest brought him up to a .316 average and six RBI which is second on the team. With some improved plate discipline and growth in power, Hosmer could be in line for a big sophomore campaign this season.
Feb 19 2012Hosmer and the Royals agreed to a contract Saturday, according to the Associated Press. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer will make $502,500 this season after his breakout campaign. He'll open the year with high expectations as the first baseman.
Sep 23 2011Hosmer was a contributor in the Royals hit parade Friday night going 2-for-5 with a solo home run and a double to raise his average to .300 on the year. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In fact, he was only one part of the hitting display as Kansas City amassed 18 hits including four home runs in their rout of the White Sox. Hosmer is just one of the youngsters who are giving the Royals faithful something to look forward to going forward.
Sep 20 2011Hosmer went 5-for-5 with a homer and three RBI in Tuesday's win over Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was the 18th home run of the season for Hosmer, who is probably going to be overhyped in some circles next season. Then again, some of the hype is justified as the 21-year old entered Tuesday's contest with a line of .292/.337/.462 in his rookie season.
Sep 2 2011Hosmer went 3-for-3 with two walks, a homer, three runs scored and a stolen base Thursday against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Tigers are certainly happy to see Hosmer leave town. In the four-game series against the Tigers he raised his OPS from .750 to .787. That's still below the numbers posted by your average fantasy first basemen, but at the ripe young age of 20 he's certainly held his own.
Aug 31 2011Hosmer hit a pair of solo homers off Tigers starter Rick Porcello on Wednesday. He also singled in his 3-for-4 day. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer hasn't really caught fire at any point this year, but at 21 years old, he's more than held his own against big-league pitching, and a big month of September could get him to 20 homers in his rookie year.
Aug 23 2011Hosmer went 3-for-5 with a home run and a steal in the Royals' win over the Jays on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The home run was Hosmer's first since July 27, but he has not budged from the No. 4 spot of the Royals' lineup during that drought.
Aug 15 2011Hosmer is not in the Royal lineup for Sunday's game, Joel Goldberg of Fox Sports Kansas City reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There's no word of injury, but Hosmer has played every game since June 29th, inclusive, so there's a distinct possibility that this just a routine day off.
Aug 9 2011Hosmer went 0-for-3 with a steal in the Royals' loss to the Rays on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer's sixth steal of the year was the first James Shields has allowed in 2011. Hosmer was a good baserunner in the minors (he was 20-for-24 on steal attempts in four seasons), but he will earn his pay check with his bat, not his feet.
Aug 2 2011Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI in the Royals' loss to the Orioles on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer has played 30 fewer games than teammate and former first base prospect Billy Butler, but the latter only has seven more RBI than the former.
Jul 27 2011Hosmer drove in four runs and hit his 10th home run of the year Wednesday against Boston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer went 2-for-5 in a night that saw the Royals crank out 16 hits, but only five runs. Hosmer is 7-for-15 over the last three games.
Jul 23 2011Hosmer went 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI during Friday's win over the Rays. It was his third game in a row with at least two hits. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer had cooled off in June, where he had no home runs and hit just .253 for the month, but he's been a bit better in July, hitting .273 with four home runs.
Jul 20 2011Hosmer went 2-for-3 with two walks on Wednesday against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The young Royals first baseman has cooled off after a fast start but is still showing the talent that made him a much-anticipated call-up this season.
Jul 16 2011Hosmer was just 1-for-4 Friday night, but the hit was a two-out, two-run, ninth inning home run that propelled the Royals to a 2-1 win over the Twins ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer is currently hitting just .268 but he now has nine home runs and 36 runs batted in on the year as he flashes some of the talent that made him one of this season's most anticipated rookie call-ups.
Jul 6 2011Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in Wednesday's win over Kansas City. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Those who have shown patience with the young first baseman have been rewarded lately, as Hosmer has three multi-hit games in the last four days including three long balls during that span. With secure playing time and a place firmly in the heart of the Royals' order, Hosmer should continue to deliver in the power categories throughout the second half.
Jul 3 2011Hosmer went 4-for-6 with a home run and four RBI during the Royals' 16-run outburst Sunday against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer boosted his falling batting average back up to .274 with the performance. He entered the day hitting just .171 in his last 18 games, so hopefully this will spark a strong finish to the first half of the season.
Jun 30 2011Hosmer is back in Wednesday's lineup against the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer is back in there Wednesday, with the Padres sending righty Tim Stauffer to the hill. To date, he is hitting lefties at a .208 clip and righthanders at .291.
Jun 29 2011Hosmer is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Padres, according to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer is hitting just .208 against lefties this season; so with Clayton Richard on the mound for the Padres, and the Royals unable to use the DH in a National League park, Billy Butler will get the start at first base Tuesday night.
Jun 23 2011Batting second Wednesday, Hosmer went 1-for-5 with an RBI against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer will lose some playing time to Billy Butler at first base during interleague play but will remain the team's full-time starter when they play by AL rules. This was also his first game batting second in the order. He has batted third for a vast majority of his games since being called up.
Jun 19 2011Hosmer will not be in the starting lineup for Sunday's interleague series finale at St. Louis, the Kansas City Star reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Routine day off for Hosmer, who will sit in favor of Billy Butler at first base.
Jun 17 2011Hosmer won't be in the lineup for Thursday's series finale at Oakland, Bob Dutton of The Kansas City Star reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Hosmer sitting, Wilson Betemit is slated to start at first base for the Royals on Thursday.
May 28 2011Hosmer broke out of a 2-for-20 slump Friday with a 4-for-7 night that included a double, a home run and four runs batted, leading Kansas City to 12-7 win in 14 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer saw his average jump back up to .284 and now has four home runs and 11 runs batted in since being brought up from Triple-A Omaha earlier this month. He is likely to be a bit streaky as he gets accustomed to the major leagues, but he is an exceptional talent.
May 20 2011Hosmer matched his career high with three hits during Thursday's extra-inning win over Texas. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer had a big part in the win, as he singled and scored the game-tying run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Hosmer, who hit third in the lineup for the second straight game, struck out two more times Thursday (12 Ks in 47 at-bats), but he's been productive in general at the plate and in the field thus far.
May 19 2011Hosmer hit his third homer of the year Wednesday against the Rangers, a game-tying shot in the ninth inning off closer Neftali Feliz. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He also struck out twice and is hitting a non-special .262, but all the signs of potential greatness are there for Hosmer, and he's essentially got no competition for the first-base job in Kansas City.
May 18 2011Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI in the Royals' loss Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He also picked up a caught stealing in the defeat, and that marked his second steal attempt of his young MLB career. The word "steal" does not appear in Hosmer's Rotowire update history, but he was 14-for-16 on the basepaths between two minor league levels in 2010. Most of value will derive from his big power, but some token steals will only enhance his worth in the future.
May 13 2011Hosmer's agent Scott Boras told Yahoo! Sports that there are no plans to discuss an extension with the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There's been some chatter from Kansas City about doing an Evan Longoria-style deal with Hosmer, but Boras' history of getting clients to free agency and cashing in suggests Hosmer will hit the market in six years.
May 12 2011Hosmer homered for the second straight game and finished with a career-high three hits in Thursday's win over the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer, who also had an RBI double, has primarily hit sixth so far, as was the case Thursday, although he batted third Wednesday when Alex Gordon got the day off. Hosmer has been strong through the first six games of his career, hitting .333 with a pair of homers, five RBI and a 5:5 K:BB ratio.
May 6 2011Hosmer made his much awaited 2011 Royals debut going 0-for-2 with two walks, two strikeouts, and a stolen base in a 3-2 loss to Oakland Friday night. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He was hitting .439 at Triple-A prior to his recall and figures to be the every day first baseman for Kansas City going forward. Apparently, fantasy owners weren't the only ones with high expectations as the Royals drew 30,690 fans for his debut.
May 5 2011Hosmer has been recalled from Triple-A Omaha, the Kansas City Star reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It looks like he'll take over as an everyday player with Kila Ka'aihue sent to Triple-A in a corresponding move. Hosmer was hitting .439/.525/.582 with three home runs in 26 games at Triple-A.
Mar 16 2011Hosmer was officially sent to minor league camp Wednesday, Dick Kaegel of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mike Moustakas was sent down as well, and it's likely that both corner infielders will be called up in June after the Super Two deadline for service time has passed.
Feb 19 2011In an online chat Friday, Royals beat writer Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star said Hosmer won't likely be with the Royals until September. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Dutton also speculated that Hosmer may not even join the team at all this year. But, as with so much February prognostication, his opinion is just an educated guess. A lot can happen between now and September.
Apr 28 2009Hosmer has three hits and three walks in his last 10 plate appearances, the Kansas City Star reports. The third overall pick was just six for 42 in his first 14 games. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer has a few years ahead before reaching the majors, but remains one of Kansas City's elite prospects.
Jun 5 2008The Royals selected Hosmer in the first round of the 2008 draft, out of high school in Florida. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hosmer is an outstanding hitter compared to Casey Kotchman with more power. He has Scott Boras as an agent but the Royals have negotiated successfully with him the last two years. He may command upwards of $7 million, but some scouts consider him the best high school bat in the last 10 years.
