Jun 20 2025The Reds placed Miley on the 15-day injured list Friday, retroactive to June 17, due to a left flexor strain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran left-hander last pitched Sunday in Detroit and gave up two runs across five innings, and it's unclear when exactly he suffered the injury. Miley will be eligible to be activated in early July but could be out longer given the nature of the injury. Chase Petty will enter the rotation in place of Miley against the Cardinals on Saturday.
Jun 15 2025Miley did not factor into the decision Sunday against Detroit, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a strong outing overall for Miley, with both of the Tigers' runs coming on a pair of solo homers. After allowing four runs over two innings in a relief appearance to start his season, Miley has given up just five runs over 10 innings in his subsequent two starts. The veteran left-hander is currently scheduled to face the Cardinals at home next week in his next outing.
Jun 12 2025Miley is slated to start Sunday's game against the Tigers at Comerica Park, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley made a two-inning relief appearance in his 2025 debut with the Reds back on June 4, but he's since moved into the Cincinnati rotation while Hunter Greene recovers from a right groin strain. The veteran southpaw was credited with a win in his first start Monday in Cleveland, but he gave up three earned runs on five hits and four walks over five innings. He'll make for a risky streaming option on the road versus a Detroit offense that has produced a collective 119 wRC+ versus left-handed pitching this season.
Jun 9 2025Miley (1-0) collected the win Monday against the Guardians after giving up three runs on five hits and four walks in five innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley was inefficient in his first start of the year, tossing just 42 of his 78 pitches for strikes, and he also generated a mere three whiffs. The 38-year-old journeyman left-hander now has a 9.00 ERA, 2.14 WHIP and 2:4 K:BB covering seven innings, but he figures to remain in Cincinnati's rotation until Hunter Greene (groin) returns from the injured list. Even so, Miley should be avoided as a fantasy streamer in most situations in his next scheduled outing against the first-place Tigers, who own an .804 OPS versus southpaws since May 1.
Jun 4 2025The Reds re-signed Miley to a one-year contract Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley opted out of his minor-league contract over the weekend, but he's returned to replace the injured Hunter Greene (groin) on the Reds' active roster and should slide into Greene's vacated rotation spot. The veteran left-hander missed most of 2024 following a hybrid UCL repair surgery and recently posted a 5.93 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 7:4 K:BB in 13.2 innings at Triple-A Louisville. Per Charlie Goldsmith of the Dayton Daily News, Miley will be available out of the bullpen Wednesday, but he's lined up to make his first start for the Reds on Monday in Cleveland.
May 12 2025Miley (elbow) allowed three runs on three hits and struck out six over 2.2 innings in a rehab start at High-A Dayton on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley resumed his rehab assignment after experiencing groin discomfort during an outing at the same affiliate April 27. The more substantive injury, however, is the Tommy John left elbow surgery. Miley's thrown just 5.2 innings while on rehab and is expected to make a few more appearances before he's ready to be activated.
Mar 23 2025The Reds reassigned Miley (elbow) to minor-league camp Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley was in big-league camp on a minor-league deal. The veteran lefty is working his way back from the left elbow surgery he underwent last June. Miley faced hitters Tuesday for the first time this spring, but he isn't expected to be ready to throw in big-league games until at least May.
Mar 19 2025Miley (elbow) faced hitters Tuesday for the first time since undergoing surgery last June, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley threw 20 pitches to three teammates, using his entire repertoire. The left-hander underwent what was termed a "hybrid procedure" which is similar to the traditional Tommy John surgery but has a shorter recovery time. The Reds are hopeful he'll be ready to pitch in big-league games at some point in May. Naturally, there will be a progression that includes more live batting practice sessions and extended spring games in Arizona. It's unclear where Miley fits on Cincinnati's pitching staff.
Jan 29 2025The Reds signed Miley (elbow) to a minor-league contract Wednesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He'll earn a prorated $2.5 million if in the majors and has a June
Dec 30 2024Miley (elbow) is aiming to pitch during the second half of spring training and be ready for major-league games by late April or early May, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A free agent, Miley underwent a hybrid UCL repair on his left elbow in May. The left-hander is 38 years old but wants to continue his career and hopes he can make it back to a major-league mound just 12 months or less post-surgery. Miley said his shoulder and the UCL part of his elbow feel "amazing," but he has bone spurs in the back of his elbow that he's "not recovering from great right now." The southpaw hopes to re-sign with the Brewers, but if that isn't in the cards he plans to be selective about where he pitches because he has two young children.
Oct 31 2024The Brewers declined Miley's (elbow) $12 million mutual option for 2025 on Thursday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley only pitched in two games for the Brewers before suffering an elbow injury in April that required him to undergo season-ending surgery. The procedure he received was designed to allow for a quicker recovery compared to a typical Tommy John surgery, though he likely won't be able to pitch until a month or two into the 2025 campaign. Due to turn 38 years old in November, it's unclear if Miley will pursue another contract in free agency or opt for retirement.
Jun 23 2024The season-ending elbow surgery that Miley underwent May 7 in Cincinnati was a hybrid procedure designed to accelerate the left-hander's recovery timeline compared to the typical Tommy John surgery, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley's surgery was overseen by Dr. Timothy Kremchek, who previously performed the same hybrid procedure on the veteran southpaw's former teammate, Justin Wilson, in 2022. Kremchek relayed that he was "super happy" with how Miley's UCL procedure went, creating optimism that the 37-year-old could make a full recovery in as few as 10-to-12 months, well ahead of the 12-to-18-month recovery timeline that Tommy John surgery typically entails. The elbow surgery was the first of Miley's career, though he acknowledged that the ligament damage in his pitching arm had been bothering him for years. Though Miley is hopeful to resume throwing bullpen sessions and facing hitters by next spring before making his 2025 debut at some point in late April or early May, it's unclear if he'll be doing so in a Brewers uniform. His contract contains a $12 million mutual option and $1.5 million buyout for 2025.
Apr 30 2024The Brewers transferred Miley (elbow) to the 60-day injured list Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Miley scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery May 7 and miss the remainder of the season, his move to the 60-day IL is simply procedural. His spot on the 40-man roster will be given to Tyler Black, who was selected from Triple-A Nashville in a corresponding move.
Apr 29 2024Miley (elbow) is scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery May 7 in Cincinnati, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Brewers first relayed Friday that Miley would require the season-ending surgery after an MRI revealed a torn UCL in his left arm, but the 37-year-old looks set to wait for the inflammation in his elbow to subside over the next two weeks before he goes under the knife. His contract with the Brewers contains a $12 million mutual option for 2025, so expect Milwaukee to decline its side of the option this offseason with the likelihood that Miley's recovery will extend into at least the first few months of next season.
Apr 26 2024Miley was diagnosed with a torn UCL in his left elbow Friday and will undergo Tommy John surgery, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 37-year-old landed on the shelf with elbow swelling early in the week and had his initial MRI results come back inconclusive, but an in-person arthrogram revealed the worst-case scenario. It's a brutal development for the Brewers' rotation and for Miley individually. At this point, he says he plans to continue his career after recovering from the procedure, McCalvy reports. "I've always said I want to go out on my own [terms]," Miley said Friday. "I still feel like I've got more in the tank."
Apr 24 2024Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Wednesday that an MRI on Miley's left elbow was inconclusive, prompting the Brewers to send the left-hander to Cincinnati for an in-person arthogram, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley was placed on the 15-day injured list Monday due to left elbow inflammation, but the Brewers apparently still have some concern that the southpaw may be dealing with some ligament damage. The arthogram should offer more clarity on the matter, while also helping the Brewers in deciding a treatment plan for Miley's injury. Tobias Myers was called up from Triple-A Nashville on Monday and ended up taking Miley's spot in the rotation Tuesday in Pittsburgh.
Apr 22 2024The Brewers placed Miley on the 15-day injured list Monday with left elbow inflammation. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley got a late start to this season because of a shoulder problem and he missed time last season with elbow and lat issues. The veteran left-hander has often shown an ability to bounce back quickly from arm-related injuries, but he indicated Monday that this is a different feeling than he's had in the past, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Miley will undergo imaging Tuesday, at which point more should be known regarding how much time he might miss. Tobias Myers was called up from Triple-A Nashville in a corresponding move and seems likely to start in Miley's place Tuesday in Pittsburgh.
Apr 19 2024Miley said Friday that he expects to make his next scheduled start despite taking a comebacker off his left knee during his outing Tuesday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley was hit by a 108-mph line drive during the first inning of Tuesday's loss and remained in the game for only two more innings. However, it seems the veteran southpaw was able to escape the incident with minimal damage. He's surrendered four earned runs across seven innings this year while striking out two batters and walking four, and he's lined up to start again Tuesday versus the Pirates.
Apr 16 2024Miley (0-1) took the loss Tuesday, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits with two walks over three innings against San Diego. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley was struck in the leg by a Manny Machado comebacker during the first inning and was met on the mound by the Brewers training staff twice following the incident. However, he remained in the game and finished out three full innings on 66 pitches. All four runs scored during Miley's outing came during the first frame, highlighted by a three-run home run by Ha-Seong Kim. While Miley is currently projected for a Monday start at Pittsburgh, fantasy managers should monitor Miley's health in the coming days.
Apr 11 2024MIley did not factor into the decision in Wednesday's win over the Reds, allowing one run on one hit and two walks over four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley was solid in his return from the 15-day-injured list (shoulder), allowing just one hit over his four innings of work while going 1-2-3 through Cincinnati's lineup in two of those frames. On the downside, the veteran lefty did issue two walks over that stretch while also hitting Jeimer Candelario with a pitch with two outs in the fourth. Miley threw just 52 pitches and should continue building up his workload next week when the Brewers host the Padres in Milwaukee.
Apr 10 2024The Brewers reinstated Miley (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Reds in Cincinnati. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Reliever Kevin Herget was optioned to Triple-A Nashville to clear room on the 26-man active roster for Miley, who is slated to make his season debut Wednesday. While he was on the mend from a left shoulder impingement, Miley made just one rehab start with Nashville, covering three innings and tossing 55 pitches last Friday. With that in mind, he likely won't be fully stretched out for a traditional starting role Wednesday, and that reality plus the matchup with the Reds at a hitter-friendly ballpark makes Miley tough to trust as a streaming option in his 2024 debut.
Apr 7 2024Miley (shoulder) covered three innings in his rehab start Friday for Triple-A Nashville, striking out three while allowing one earned run on two hits and two walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Miley tossed 55 pitches (30 strikes) in the rehab outing and isn't yet fully stretched out for a traditional starter's role, he's nonetheless expected to return from the 15-day injured list to make his next start for the Brewers, according to MLB.com. He tentatively lines up to take the hill Wednesday in Cincinnati as part of what's expected to be a six-man rotation while Milwaukee is in the midst of a stretch of 13 games in as many days.
Apr 5 2024Miley (shoulder) is scheduled to make a rehab start for Triple-A Nashville on Friday, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley opened the season on the 15-day injured list due to a left shoulder impingement, but he looks on track to be ready to return shortly after he's first eligible for activation April 9. After his shoulder checked out fine Monday following a two-inning simulated game, Miley will test himself in an uncontrolled setting Friday, and he'll likely increase his innings and pitch counts as well. The Brewers will check back in with Miley following the rehab start before determining his next step, but if he fares well Friday, his next outing could come with Milwaukee during its four-game series in Cincinnati at the beginning of next week.
Apr 2 2024Miley (shoulder) is next expected to make a minor-league rehab start after throwing a two-inning simulated game Monday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran left-hander is on the injured list to begin the season due to a shoulder impingement, but he may not be sidelined long beyond the 15-day minimum. It remains to be seen if Miley will require an additional rehab start in the minors, per Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, but if not, he could join Milwaukee's rotation sometime next week.
Mar 28 2024The Brewers placed Miley on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a left shoulder impingement. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley will be eligible to return from the IL on April 9 and appears to be trending toward a return at or around that date. According to MLB.com, Miley threw a three-inning simulated game at Citi Field on Wednesday without issue. The Brewers plan to have Miley either toss one more sim game or head out to a minor-league affiliate to make one or two rehab starts before he slots into the big-league rotation.
Mar 25 2024Miley (shoulder, groin) will throw a three-inning simulated game Wednesday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: If the sim game goes off without a hitch, Miley will then report to Triple-A Nashville, where he'll make a couple rehab starts. The veteran left-hander missed most of spring training with a shoulder injury and, more recently, a groin issue. He will begin the season on the 15-day injured list but would seem to have a shot to be activated when first eligible April 9.
Mar 21 2024Miley said he was scratched from Thursday's game against the Giants due to groin tightness, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley also noted that he was going to begin the year on the injured list anyway after dealing with shoulder problems all spring, so it wasn't worth pushing it Thursday with his new groin issue. Miley will instead throw a bullpen session Thursday and may pitch in a game over the weekend, but it seems the Brewers will be without the 37-year-old southpaw to start the new season. Miley's absence opens the door for Aaron Ashby, Joe Ross or Robert Gasser to begin 2024 in Milwaukee's rotation.
Mar 13 2024Miley (shoulder) will throw a simulated game Wednesday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander got through a 30-pitch bullpen session Monday and will now progress to facing hitters. Miley hasn't made any Cactus League appearances because of left shoulder soreness but hasn't yet been ruled out for Opening Day.
Mar 12 2024Miley (shoulder) threw a 30-pitch bullpen session with two "up-downs" Monday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The up-downs are used to best simulate a pitcher's rest in between innings. Miley came out of the session well and played catch Tuesday. He is slated to face hitters next, although when that happen isn't clear. Miley doesn't have much runway before Opening Day, but the 37-year-old is not yet ruling it out.
Mar 8 2024Miley threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Friday and said afterward that his left shoulder is no longer a concern, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While the veteran southpaw no longer feels any discomfort in his shoulder, it remains a question as to whether he will have enough time to ramp up his throwing ahead of Opening Day. If Miley does ultimately need a stint on the injured list, it seems like it would be a short one.
Mar 5 2024Miley (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Tuesday, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Brewers manager Pat Murphy was pleased with how things went, saying afterward of Miley that "I wouldn't count him out for the first week." The veteran left-hander has been slowed this spring by shoulder soreness, with Murphy saying over the weekend that Miley had a 50-50 shot of being ready for Opening Day. It sounds like the 37-year-old is trending in the right direction, but he still has some work to do.
Mar 2 2024Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Saturday that Miley is dealing with shoulder soreness, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy previously said Miley has a 50-50 chance at being ready by Opening Day, though the nature of Miley's injury had not been revealed at the time. Miley played catch Saturday without reporting any issues, but the Brewers will continue to build him up slowly given Miley's age and injury history. If the 37-year-old lefty is ready to go for the start of the season, he figures to follow Freddy Peralta as the second starter in the Brewers' rotation.
Mar 1 2024Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Friday that Miley has a 50-50 chance of being ready for the start of the season, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy declined to go into specifics about what Miley is dealing with, adding only that the team should have a better idea on his status in about 10 days. The 37-year-old has dealt with elbow and shoulder injuries each of the last two seasons, but it's not clear whether his current issue is related to his pitching arm. Miley was limited to 23 starts in 2023 but finished the season healthy. Losing the veteran left-hander would be a blow to a Brewers rotation that's already lacking depth.
Dec 4 2023Miley agreed Monday with the Brewers on a one-year, $7 million contract, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley is guaranteed $8.5 million in the deal, and the contract includes a $12 million mutual option or $1.5 million buyout for 2025. The veteran southpaw is coming off a strong showing for Milwaukee in 2023, having collected a 3.14 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 79:38 K:BB over 120.1 innings. He turned 37 years old in November and can't be counted on to make every start, but Miley should offer the Brewers a high floor when healthy.
Nov 3 2023Miley declined his half of a $10 million mutual option with the Brewers on Friday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley could ultimately wind up returning to Milwaukee for the 2024 season, but the soon-to-be 37-year-old understandably wants to capitalize on what could be his final opportunity to score a multi-year payday. He pitched to a steady 3.14 ERA and 1.14 WHIP across 120.1 innings (23 starts) this year for the NL Central champions.
Sep 27 2023Miley allowed one run on six hits and one walk while striking out two batters over five innings in a no-decision against St. Louis on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley yielded a run in the second frame but otherwise kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard in another strong outing. The left-hander has given up one or zero runs in three of his past four starts, posting a 2.21 ERA over 20.1 innings during that stretch. Miley's 14:8 K:BB during that period isn't very impressive, but he's pitching well enough to be a solid option should the Brewers need a fourth starter in the playoffs. The veteran hurler finished the regular season with a strong 3.14 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 79:38 K:BB over 120.1 frames.
Sep 21 2023Miley (9-4) earned the win Thursday over the Cardinals, throwing six shutout innings with seven strikeouts in a 6-0 victory. He allowed three hits and two walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley stymied the Cardinals on Thursday, scattering just five baserunners across a marvelous six innings. He only allowed one extra base hit -- a double by Paul Goldschmidt in the first inning. The 13-year veteran easily had his best start since returning from an elbow injury Aug. 2. In nine starts since, Miley has gone 3-2 with a 3.40 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 31:18 K:BB over 47.2 innings.
Sep 16 2023Miley (8-4) picked up the win in Friday's 5-3 victory over the Nationals, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All three Washington runs came in the first inning as it looked like Miley might get chased early, but the veteran southpaw settled down after that and came one out short of his ninth quality start of the season. Since rejoining the rotation at the beginning of August, Miley has posted a solid 3.89 ERA and 1.13 WHIP despite a weak 24:16 K:BB through 41.2 innings. His next trip to the mound will likely come next week in St. Louis.
Sep 10 2023Miley did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit and three walks over 3.2 innings against the Yankees. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley retired 10 of the first 12 batters he faced but ran into trouble in the fourth after issuing a one-out walk to Gleyber Torres. Two runs would end up coming across for New York in the inning before the lefty was replaced by Elvis Peguero. Miley had gone at least five innings in five consecutive starts coming in, and Saturday marked his shortest outing since May 16. He's now issued three walks in back-to-back starts and holds a 4.50 ERA in September to go along with a 7:6 K:BB.
Sep 3 2023Miley (7-4) took the loss Sunday, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks over 6.1 innings against the Phillies. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley was cruising Sunday, holding the Phillies hitless until the sixth inning. However, he'd give up a run on a Nick Castellanos two-out double before surrendering a pair of homers in the seventh en route to an eventual 4-2 loss. The 36-year-old Miley had been pitching well for the Brewers, going 4-1 with a 2.77 ERA over his prior 10 starts. Overall, the left-hander sports a 3.33 ERA with a 1.14 WHIP and 64:30 K:BB across 19 starts (100 innings) this season. Miley's currently lined up for a road matchup with the Yankees in his next outing.
Aug 28 2023Miley (7-3) earned the win over the Cubs on Monday, allowing two runs on four hits and no walks while striking out one batter over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley served up a pair of homers in the contest, but they were both solo shots, and those were the only runs Chicago could manage against him. The left-hander got the job done by getting 11 of his 18 outs via grounders, making up for the fact that he tallied just four swinging strikes and one punchout. Miley's quality start was eighth in 18 outings this season, and he's compiled a strong 3.17 ERA and 1.14 WHIP despite fanning just 60 batters over 93.2 frames.
Aug 22 2023Miley did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk over five innings against the Twins. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After allowing more than two runs once in his previous eight starts, Miley surrendered three earned runs for a second consecutive outing Tuesday. He was tagged for a two-run homer by Christian Vazquez in the second frame, marking the southpaw's third straight appearance giving up a long ball. Despite a couple of hiccups, Miley's been a solid fantasy contributor this season, owning a 6-3 record and a 3.18 ERA across 87.2 innings. Miley's tentatively scheduled to take the mound next during a three-game road series against the Cubs next week.
Aug 16 2023Miley (6-3) gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out two over five innings, taking the loss Wednesday versus the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley had given up just two runs over 10 innings across his first two starts back from a left elbow injury. The 36-year-old southpaw had some trouble with the top of the Dodgers' order, and the Brewers were limited to three hits and three walks in the game. Miley is now at a 3.05 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 55:26 K:BB through 82.2 innings over 16 starts this season. He's tentatively projected for a home start against the Twins next week.
Aug 8 2023Miley did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing one run on two hits and three walks over six innings against the Rockies. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Tuesday marked the 300th start of Miley's 13-year career, and his only blemish came on a Nolan Jones solo homer in the fourth inning. The 36-year-old lefty recently returned from a stint on the injured list caused by elbow discomfort, and he's since surrendered just two runs through 10 innings while striking out seven batters and walking five. However, Miley will almost surely be tested during his next start -- currently scheduled to come against a Dodgers offense that boasts a .797 OPS on the season.
Aug 3 2023Miley did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over four innings against Washington. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley pitched well in his return from the injured list, with the only damage against him coming in the third inning when he allowed a leadoff double to Alex Call to open the frame, followed by an RBI single to Jake Alu. The left-hander then struck out three batters in the fourth inning before being relieved by Hoby Miner to open the fifth. Miley has allowed just one run over his last 10 innings of work to go along with a 13:5 K:BB.
Aug 2 2023The Brewers reinstated Miley (elbow) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday in Washington. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Milwaukee reopened a spot in its rotation for Miley a few days earlier, when the team placed Julio Teheran (hip) on the 15-day IL. Miley ended up missing just over the minimum 15 days due to left elbow discomfort, but he appears to have responded well to a platelet-rich plasma injection and didn't require a rehab assignment prior to being activated. Miley should be in store for close to a normal workload as he makes his 14th start of the season Wednesday.
Jul 30 2023The Brewers will reinstate Miley (elbow) from the 15-day injured list and have him start Wednesday in Washington, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley will be making his return from the IL two days after the minimum 15 days, taking the rotation spot of Julio Teheran (hip), who was placed on the IL on Sunday. After receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection to treat bone spurs in his elbow, Miley made a speedy recovery and didn't require a minor-league rehab assignment. The Brewers could still elect to be somewhat conservative with Miley's workload Wednesday, but he'll nonetheless have a good chance at covering the five innings necessary to qualify for a win.
Jul 18 2023Brewers manager Craig Counsell said Tuesday that the team is feeling optimistic about Miley's elbow injury, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley has been dealing with bone spurs during his last few starts and received a PRP injection immediately after his most recent start July 9 against the Reds. The Brewers haven't felt a need for imaging on Miley's elbow, indicating that they don't believe the damage to be severe enough to force an extended IL stint.
Jul 17 2023Miley was placed on the 15-day injured list Monday due to left elbow discomfort. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley last pitched July 9 against the Reds and picked up the win after firing six shutout innings, but there had been no word of any injury until Monday. The move is retroactive to Friday, so he'll be eligible for activation beginning July 29. Colin Rea is the likely candidate to make Miley's next scheduled start Tuesday against the Phillies.
Jul 9 2023Miley (6-2) allowed four hits and three walks while striking out eight over six shutout innings to earn the win Sunday over the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley posted his fifth scoreless outing of the season, three of which have come in his last five starts. The strong showing lowered his ERA to 3.06 with a 1.15 WHIP and 46:9 K:BB through 67.2 innings over 13 starts this year. Miley's next start will likely be on the road, either as a rematch in Cincinnati or in Philadelphia depending on how the Brewers order their rotation following the All-Star break.
Jul 4 2023Miley didn't factor in the decision Tuesday against the Cubs after he gave up four runs on nine hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran left-hander generated 15 swinging strikes but still surrendered a season-high nine hits, including four that went for extra bases. Miley went unscored upon in 11 frames during his first two starts in June after missing time with a lat injury, but he's now allowed six runs over nine innings across his last two outings. Miley won't make his next start until after the All-Star break if the Brewers continue to utilize a six-man rotation.
Jun 29 2023Miley didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 5-2 win over the Mets, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran southpaw tossed 74 pitches (40 strikes) before exiting with the score tied 2-2. Miley left his last start due to cramping in his side, and while that didn't seem to be an issue Wednesday, he's now thrown 77 pitches or less in all three of his outings since coming off the IL in mid-June. He was efficient enough to last five frames and record the win in each of those first two June starts, but his margin for error is thinner if the Brewers continue to limit the 36-year-old's workload. Miley will take a 3.02 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 34:14 K:BB through 56.2 innings this season into his next trip to the mound, likely to come at home early next week against the Cubs.
Jun 26 2023Miley (side) is lined up to start Wednesday versus the Mets, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley made an early exit from his last turn in the Brewers' rotation due to cramping in his right side, but it was never a serious concern. The veteran southpaw has tossed 11 scoreless innings since returning June 17 from a four-week absence to heal a left lat strain and boasts a 2.91 ERA through 52.2 total frames (10 starts) this year.
Jun 23 2023Miley (cramps) told reporters that the cramping issue that caused him to leave Friday's start versus the Guardians after six innings isn't considered serious, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. He picked up the win and threw six scoreless innings with three strikeouts before leaving. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley told reporters that he started feeling the cramping after his last pitch in the sixth, and he and the team decided it wasn't a good idea for him to continue despite the six scoreless frames and needing only 67 pitches to get through the lineup twice. The left-hander should be able to make his next scheduled start, which is currently lined up for Thursday against the Mets.
Jun 17 2023Miley (4-2) earned the win over Pittsburgh on Saturday, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out four batters over five scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley missed a month on the injured list due to a lat strain before being activated Saturday. The left-hander didn't seem to miss a beat, allowing just four baserunners over five breezy frames. Miley would have likely gone deeper if not for the lengthy layoff -- he threw just 77 pitches and retired 11 of the final 14 hitters he faced before getting the hook. The veteran hurler stuck around just long enough to get the win, his first since April 22.
Jun 13 2023Brewers manager Craig Counsell said Miley (lat) will return from the injured list to start Saturday's game against the Pirates, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley proved his health while tallying five strikeouts over five scoreless innings in a rehab outing this past Sunday with Double-A Biloxi. He had posted a solid 3.67 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 41.2 innings (eight starts) with the Brewers before landing on the injured list in mid-May due to a posterior serratus strain around the left side of his rib cage.
Jun 11 2023Miley (lat) covered five scoreless innings in his rehab start Sunday with Double-A Biloxi, striking out five while scattering four hits and one walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In his first game action since landing on the 15-day injured list May 17 with a left lat strain, Miley looked about as sharp as the Brewers could have hoped. He recorded 15 outs on 65 pitches, throwing 44 of them for strikes. Though Miley could be an option to make his next start with the big club as soon as Friday versus Pittsburgh, the Brewers may be inclined to have the veteran lefty get further stretched out with one more rehab outing on the farm, especially with the back-end members of the big-league rotation pitching well at the moment.
Jun 4 2023Miley (lat) is scheduled to make a rehab start next Sunday with Double-A Biloxi, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley has been on the shelf since mid-May with a posterior serratus strain around the left side of his rib cage, but he appears to have made good progress in his recovery and now looks ready to face hitters in a competitive setting. According to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, Miley believes he'll need only one rehab start before he's ready to rejoin the Milwaukee rotation, so he could be activated from the 15-day IL during the Brewers' three-game series with the Pirates that begins June 16.
Jun 2 2023Miley (lat/rib) threw a bullpen session Thursday without issue, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley was diagnosed in mid-May with a posterior serratus strain near the left side of his rib cage and given a 6-to-8 week timetable, but the veteran southpaw told reporters Friday that he believes it will wind up being just a four-week overall IL stay. That would put him on track to return to the Brewers' rotation around the middle of June. He had pitched to a 3.67 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 24:9 K:BB across 41.2 innings (eight starts) prior to the injury.
Jun 1 2023Brewers manager Craig Counsell said Thursday that Miley (lat/rib) could soon begin throwing bullpen sessions, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley was initially expected to miss upwards of eight weeks when he was diagnosed in mid-May with a posterior serratus strain around the left side of his rib cage, but he seems to be recovering at a fairly quick pace. "It's going really well," Counsell told reporters. "He feels great. We're trying to push this along with Wade and so far, all signs are good." The veteran southpaw might be an option again for Milwaukee's rotation before the end of June.
May 19 2023Miley (lat/rib) is likely to be sidelined 6-8 weeks, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley was placed on the injured list Wednesday and has been diagnosed with a posterior serratus strain around the left side of his rib cage. The best-case scenario calls for him to return to Milwaukee's starting rotation by the end of June. He had registered a 3.67 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 24:9 K:BB through 41.2 innings (eight starts) this season.
May 17 2023Milwaukee placed Miley on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a strained left lat. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley suffered the injury in the second inning of his start in Tuesday's win over the Cardinals. The Brewers haven't offered up a timetable for Miley's return, as the veteran left-hander had to be sent back to Milwaukee to undergo further testing. Reliever Jake Cousins was called up from Triple-A Nashville in a corresponding move.
May 16 2023Manager Craig Counsell said after Tuesday's win over the Cardinals that Miley (lat) will require a trip to the injured list, Sophia Minnaert of Bally Sports Wisconsin reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran left-hander exited Tuesday's start in St. Louis after just five outs due to a lat strain, and he'll spend at least the next couple weeks on the shelf. Miley is returning to Milwaukee to undergo further evaluation, which could reveal the severity of the injury.
May 11 2023Miley (3-2) took the loss Wednesday as the Brewers were routed 8-1 by the Dodgers, surrendering seven runs on six hits -- including three home runs -- and two walks over five-plus innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 36-year-old lefty held Los Angeles off the scoreboard for three innings before the wheels came off the fourth, as Freddie Freeman and Will Smith launched back-to-back solo shots to open the scoring. Miley hadn't given up more than three runs or served up more than one homer in any of his six prior starts this season, so for now this can be chalked up to an off afternoon. He'll take a 3.60 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 24:8 K:BB through 40 innings into his next outing, likely to come early next week in St. Louis.
May 4 2023Miley didn't factor in the decision against Colorado on Thursday, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two batters over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley made it through six scoreless frames before allowing three straight batters to reach to open the seventh. All three came around to score, putting a sour ending on what had appeared to be another impressive outing by the southpaw. Coming into Thursday, Miley had given up just three total earned runs over his previous three starts covering 18 innings. He still managed to pick up his fourth quality start of the campaign in Colorado, and his 2.31 season ERA ranks 12th among qualified starters.
Apr 28 2023Miley did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing one run on seven hits over six innings against the Angels. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley continued his excellent start to 2023. He has pitched at least five innings in every start and has allowed three runs or less each time out. The strikeout numbers are not there, as he has just five punch outs in 11 innings over his last two starts. However his ERA is a minuscule 1.86 and his WHIP is an even 1.00.
Apr 4 2023Miley (1-0) earned the win Tuesday against the Mets after he allowed five hits over six scoreless innings. He had three strikeouts and zero walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran left-hander pounded the zone in his season debut and threw 51 of his 79 pitches for strikes, and he gave up just five singles to New York. Miley's fantasy potential is limited by his low strikeouts, but he could provide some ERA stability in deeper leagues, as long as he can stay healthy. He tentatively lines up to make his next start Monday in Arizona.
Apr 3 2023Miley is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley rejoined the Brewers in January, and he will start the club's fifth game of the season. He only made three appearances during spring training, but he was effective, posting a 4.22 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 8:4 K:BB over 10.2 innings. While he is at the back end of the rotation, his spot will likely be secure for a while, as no one is imminently knocking on the door to replace him.
Jan 4 2023Miley agreed to a one-year, $4.5 million contract with the Brewers on Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley battled numerous injuries last season and threw only 37 innings for the Cubs, and he'll remain in the NL Central for the 2023 campaign. The veteran left-hander salvaged his MLB career on a minor-league deal with Milwaukee in 2018 with a 2.57 ERA in 16 starts, and the Brewers are hoping for another resurgent season after an injury-plagued 2022 campaign. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Miley's deal includes a $10 million mutual option for 2024 with a $1 million buyout, plus up to $1.5 million of incentives.
Oct 2 2022Miley (2-2) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win Saturday against the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley hadn't pitched in a week due to oblique tightness, and he made his return in a relief role for the first time this season, working through two innings on just 12 pitches without allowing a hit or a walk. Injuries have limited the lefty to only 37 innings this year, though he's pitched well with a 3.16 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. Miley will likely stick in a relief role in the last few days of the season, then aim to get healthy for a bigger workload in 2023.
Sep 30 2022Miley (oblique) threw a bullpen session Wednesday, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley has been dealing with left oblique tightness recently and was able to resume mound work Wednesday after playing catch Tuesday. He felt good after Wednesday's throwing session, but it's not yet clear whether the Cubs expect him to make another start prior to the end of the regular season.
Sep 27 2022Miley (oblique) played catch Tuesday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He exited Saturday's game with left oblique tightness and it's unclear if Miley will be able to make another start this season. The veteran southpaw has a 3.94 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 16 strikeouts in 16 innings through four September outings.
Sep 24 2022Miley exited Saturday's game against the Pirates with left oblique tightness, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty made it four innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk while striking out three, before the injury forced him off the hill. It ended up being a disappointing two-start week for Miley -- he gave up seven runs (three earned) over three innings in Miami on Monday. This could end his season, though Miley's status for his next start is currently up in the air.
Sep 19 2022Miley (1-1) allowed seven runs (three earned) on seven hits across three innings to take the loss Monday against the Marlins. He walked two and struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The silver lining is that four of the runs he allowed were unearned, but Miley still struggled in this one, allowing two home runs across his three innings of work. This was just the seventh start of the season for the veteran, who missed time with elbow and shoulder injuries. Miley is in line to start again Sunday against the Pirates. The lefty is likely to make one more appearance this year after that, then turn his attention toward what he hopes is better health in 2023.
Sep 16 2022Miley's next start has been pushed back to Monday against the Marlins, Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley was initially listed as the starter for Saturday's matchup against the Rockies, but Hayden Wesneski will take the mound instead. Miley doesn't appear to be dealing with any sort of injury, and the move was likely made to give the left-hander a few extra days of rest before his next outing. Over two starts since returning to action, Miley has posted a 3.00 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in nine innings.
Sep 11 2022Miley didn't factor into the decision during Sunday's 4-2 loss to San Francisco, allowing one run on four hits and one walk with five strikeouts in five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley was able to avoid trouble aside from the fourth inning, when he allowed his lone run following a leadoff double. The 35-year-old fired 48 of 75 pitches for strikes with eight of the swinging variety and has allowed three earned runs in nine innings across two starts since missing nearly three months with a shoulder injury. Miley carries a 2.89 ERA and 1.14 WHIP into his next start, slated to come next weekend against Colorado.
Sep 6 2022Miley (shoulder) allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits and two walks while striking out six in four innings in a 9-3 win Tuesday against Cincinnati. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Tuesday's start was Miley's first since June 10 and the fifth of the season. He only threw 54 pitches in his last rehab start and it was no surprise that he was removed after four innings and 69 pitches. All three runs allowed were driven in by Kyle Farmer as the third baseman had a two-run triple in the first and a solo homer in the third. For the year, he has a 3.13 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 18:10 K:BB in 23 innings. His next start will likely be early next week in New York against the Mets.
Sep 4 2022The Cubs will activate Miley (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list and have him start Tuesday's game against the Reds, Elise Menaker of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Even though Miley tossed only 3.2 innings and 54 pitches last Wednesday after restarting his rehab assignment at Triple-A Iowa following a two-week break, the Cubs were comfortable enough with what they saw from the lefty to bring him back from the IL. Miley will be making just his fifth start of the season for the Cubs in what will mark his first outing in the big leagues since June 10, and there's a good chance he's on a limited pitch count in his return to action.
Sep 1 2022The Cubs transferred Miley (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley has been on the shelf since June 11 with a strained left shoulder, and because he's already missed more than two months, the transaction won't affect his timeline for a return. After a suffering a setback following an Aug. 16 rehab start, Miley was shut down for about two weeks, but he resumed his minor-league assignment Wednesday with High-A South Bend. Miley struck out two while allowing two earned runs on five hits and no walks over 3.2 innings in Wednesday's outing, and he'll likely require at least one or two more tune-up starts in the minors before potentially slotting back into the Cubs' rotation in the middle of September.
Aug 27 2022Miley (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Saturday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley was shut down from throwing last week after his shoulder didn't respond well following a rehab appearance. However, he'll test things out during his side session Saturday after resting for several days. If the southpaw feels good after his mound work, it's possible that he'll be cleared to resume a rehab assignment sometime next week.
Aug 23 2022Miley played catch Monday but still isn't rebounding from his left shoulder injury as well as the Cubs had hoped, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley looked as though he might have been a candidate to return from the 15-day injured list this week after he allowed one unearned run over five innings in his most recent rehab start at Triple-A Iowa on Aug. 16, but the veteran southpaw experienced renewed discomfort in his strained shoulder in that outing and is without a clear timeline to return to game action. The Cubs may have Miley rest for the next few days before determining his next steps, but in any case, he'll likely have to throw at least one more rehab start or simulated game before he's activated from the IL.
Aug 21 2022Cubs manager David Ross suggested Miley (shoulder) could resume throwing off a mound Monday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley was pulled off his rehab assignment at Triple-A Iowa after his left shoulder didn't respond well to his most recent outing Tuesday, but the southpaw seems to have turned in a corner in his recovery after a few days of rest. If Miley is in fact cleared to resume a throwing program Monday, he likely won't need a prolonged buildup, given that he already made four rehab starts prior to his brief shutdown. The Cubs will likely still want Miley to complete at least one more rehab start to prove that he's healthy before he returns from the 15-day injured list and rejoins what could be a six-man rotation in September.
Aug 20 2022Miley will be checked out by the Cubs' training staff Saturday after his shoulder failed to get loose enough for him to throw Friday, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley seemed to be on the verge of a return from his shoulder strain, as he allowed only one unearned run in five scoreless innings in his fourth rehab start Tuesday. That no longer seems to be the case thanks to his potential setback. A new timeline for his return should become available after his examination.
Aug 18 2022Miley (shoulder) struck out two and allowed one unearned run on two hits and one walk across five innings Tuesday in his rehab start for Triple-A Iowa. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley built up to 75 pitches in the start, the fourth and likely final outing of his rehab assignment. Assuming he checks out fine once re-evaluated in Chicago later this week, Miley should come off the 15-day injured list as soon as Sunday. Three separate stints on the IL have limited Miley to just four starts at the big-league level during his first season with the Cubs.
Aug 13 2022Miley (shoulder) will make a fourth rehab start sometime next week, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley will throw a bullpen Sunday and will require at least one more appearance in the minors following the throwing session. The southpaw allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out five in 4.2 innings during Wednesday's start at Triple-A Iowa and will likely be considered to rejoin the Cubs' rotation following his next rehab outing.
Aug 9 2022Miley (shoulder) will make his third rehab start at Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley tossed 49 pitches in 2.1 innings in his most recent rehab outing Aug. 3 and will be looking to increase his workload in Wednesday's outing. Currently in the midst of his third stint on the injured list, Miley has been limited to just four starts with the Cubs in 2022.
Aug 3 2022Miley (shoulder) yielded three earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two over 2.1 innings Wednesday in his second rehab start for Triple-A Iowa. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley also covered 2.1 innings in his initial rehab outing last weekend, though he upped his pitch count from 36 to 49 this time around. The southpaw will likely require one or two more rehab starts to get fully ramped up, so he doesn't appear on pace to come off the 15-day injured list until next weekend at the soonest.
Jul 31 2022Miley (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Sunday and is scheduled for a rehab start with Triple-A Iowa this week, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley made his first rehab outing Friday with High-A South Bend and allowed five runs (four earned) across 2.1 innings. The veteran left-hander is set to make another start in the minors this week, which will come Wednesday if he remains on a typical five-day pitching schedule. Miley may require an additional rehab outing or two after this week since he's been sidelined over seven weeks with the shoulder injury.
Jul 28 2022Miley (shoulder) is expected to start Friday for High-A South Bend. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley has been on the shelf since June 11 while dealing with a left shoulder strain, but Friday's start will bring him one step closer to a return. In four starts with the Cubs this season, the left-hander has produced a 2.84 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with 12 punchouts over 19 innings. If all goes well on his rehab assignment, Miley could potentially return to the big leagues at some point around mid-August.
Jul 27 2022Miley (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment at High-A South Bend on Wednesday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley threw 28 pitches during a live BP session Monday and will return to game action to close out the week. The southpaw's minor-league appearance will come four days before the trade deadline, and it's possible that he'll be involved in trade talks if he feels good following the rehab start. Regardless of whether he's dealt, it's possible that the 35-year-old will be able to return to the majors sometime around mid-August.
Jul 25 2022Miley (shoulder) threw 28 pitches during his live BP session Monday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley tossed a 32-pitch bullpen session Friday, and he faced live hitters Monday with one up-down during the throwing session. The southpaw appears to be closing in on a rehab assignment, which would likely put him in line to rejoin the Cubs' rotation sometime around mid-August.
Jul 22 2022Miley (shoulder) threw a 32-pitch bullpen session Friday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley resumed throwing in late June and has now progressed to mound work. However, he'll need some time to build back up prior to rejoining the Cubs' rotation. Since the 35-year-old has been on the injured list since June 11, he'll likely require a rehab assignment before returning from the injured list. As a result, it seems unlikely that he'll return to the majors until sometime in mid-August at the earliest.
Jul 7 2022Miley (shoulder) played light catch Thursday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This is at least the second time that Miley has thrown since being placed on the injured list June 11. However, he still needs to ramp up his intensity and will likely require at least a short rehab assignment. Given that, he almost certainly will not be back prior to the All-Star break and early August could be a more realistic target.
Jun 28 2022Miley (shoulder) played catch Tuesday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He was placed on the injured list June 11 with a shoulder strain. Miley is further behind in his throwing progression than Marcus Stroman (shoulder) or Drew Smyly (oblique), as he has not yet advanced to bullpen sessions or live batting practice.
Jun 11 2022Miley was placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a left shoulder strain, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley dealt with a shoulder injury earlier this year as well and has only made four starts for the Cubs in 2022. He has a 2.84 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 12 strikeouts in 19 innings and should be considered out indefinitely.
Jun 10 2022Miley (shoulder) will be re-examined Monday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley exited Friday's game against the Yankees after three innings due to left shoulder soreness after he spent time on the injured list with a similar issue prior to the matchup. The southpaw said after the game that he didn't want to predict whether he'd require another IL stint, but more information will likely be known after he's re-examined Monday. If he's cleared to make his next start, he tentatively lines up to take the mound at home against the Padres on Wednesday.
Jun 8 2022Miley (shoulder) will be activated off the 15-day injured list to start Friday against the Yankees, Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander missed the first month of the season with an elbow issue and made only three starts before heading back to the injured list with a shoulder strain, but he's poised to rejoin Chicago's rotation Friday. Miley didn't make any rehab starts this time around and hasn't pitched in a game since May 22, so he could face some workload limitations in his first game back from the injury.
Jun 4 2022Miley (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Sunday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sunday's throwing session will mark the second time Miley has thrown off a mound since landing on the injured list May 29, signaling that his shoulder strain doesn't seem to be a long-term concern. The southpaw apparently felt good following Thursday's bullpen session, and he'll likely progress to facing live hitters at next week as long as Sunday's bullpen goes smoothly.
Jun 2 2022Miley (shoulder) was scheduled to throw a bullpen session earlier Thursday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Cubs have yet to reveal how Miley felt coming out of the workout, but the fact that he isn't being shut down from throwing four days after landing on the injured list suggests that his strained left shoulder isn't a long-term concern. Chicago replaced Miley in the rotation with Matt Swarmer, who will pick up his second start in Saturday's doubleheader with the Cardinals after limiting the Brewers to four runs over six innings in his MLB debut Monday.
May 29 2022The Cubs placed Miley on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a left shoulder strain, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley won't be eligible to return from the IL until June 10 as a result of the shoulder strain, an injury the southpaw initially believed was a minor concern when he picked it up coming out of his most recent start May 22. The veteran made just three starts for the Cubs before succumbing to an injury that will send him to the shelf for the second time this season, after he previously opened the campaign on the IL while recovering from elbow inflammation. Chicago recalled Mark Leiter from Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move, and he could be called upon to make a spot start when Miley's turn in the rotation comes up again in Monday's doubleheader with the Brewers.
May 28 2022Miley is day-to-day with a minor shoulder issue but believes he'll be able to avoid the injured list, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley doesn't seem to have an official diagnosis, as the veteran lefty referred to his injury as "a little something." He felt better Saturday after playing catch, but whether or not the Cubs share his optimism about avoiding the injured list is not yet clear. If he's available, he could be asked to start one half of Monday's doubleheader against Milwaukee.
May 22 2022Miley didn't factor into the decision during Sunday's 5-4 win against the Diamondbacks, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley was given an early three-run lead and cruised through the first five innings but ran into trouble by allowing four baserunners with two out in the sixth tie the game. The 35-year-old tossed a season-high 85 pitches but induced just five swinging strikes and he's now recorded 10 strikeouts in 16 total innings. After a poor outing on April 10, Miley has surrendered three runs in 13 innings over his last two starts and will look to keep rolling against the White Sox next weekend.
May 16 2022Miley (1-0) pitched seven shutout innings to earn the win Monday against the Pirates. He allowed just a single hit while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Outside of a Michael Chavis single in the fifth inning, Miley was flawless in his second start of the season. The lefty allowed three runs across three innings in his 2022 debut Tuesday, so this was clearly a step in the right direction. Miley had been sidelined with an elbow injury and now appears to be fully healthy, going from 64 pitches in his first start to 83 on Monday, and he might have thrown more had the Cubs not been up 9-0 when he departed. The veteran will look to build on this promising performance in his next scheduled start Sunday against the Diamondbacks.
May 10 2022Miley didn't factor into the decision during Tuesday's 5-4 loss to San Diego, allowing three runs on five hits and five walks with one strikeout in three innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After being sidelined for the first month of the season with an elbow injury, Miley pitched poorly from the start. He surrendered five baserunners and two runs in the first then three baserunners and one run in the third, with all of the damage coming with two outs in both innings. The 35-year-old found the zone with only 37 of 64 pitches and induced just four swinging strikes. Miley will look to rebound with his next start likely to come against Pittsburgh next week.
May 9 2022Miley (elbow) will start Tuesday's game against the Padres, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley looked solid in Thursday's rehab start at Triple-A, and the team has since decided that he's ready to return from the injured list. He's set for his first start of the 2022 campaign after missing time with left elbow inflammation.
May 7 2022Miley (elbow) will throw a bullpen session in the coming days and the next step is to be determined, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He threw four shutout innings while allowing two hits and zero walks with three strikeouts Thursday at Triple-A, so it would seem things are progressing in the right direction. Miley could be nearing a return to the big-league rotation, or he could make another rehab start.
May 3 2022Miley (elbow) is scheduled to begin a minor-league rehab assignment Thursday, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Cubs have yet to announce which affiliate Miley will join, but he's been given the green light to pitch in a game after his left elbow checked out fine following Sunday's bullpen session and Tuesday's light catch session. Because he was sidelined for much of spring training with a neck issue before the elbow problem cropped up in early April, Miley will likely need at least two or three starts in the minors before he's deemed ready to return from the 10-day injured list.
Apr 24 2022Miley (elbow) is scheduled to throw live batting practice Wednesday, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley completed a 50-pitch bullpen session Friday and will now advance to facing live batters. The veteran left-hander appears to be nearing the final stages of his rehab program and could be ticketed for a minor-league rehab assignment if Wednesday's session goes well.
Apr 20 2022Miley (elbow) will throw a bullpen session Friday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley threw his second bullpen session Tuesday, and it apparently went well since he'll throw off a mound once again late in the week. He tossed around 25-to-30 pitches during his first bullpen session, so he'll require time to build up before he's in the mix to return to major-league games.
Apr 18 2022Miley (elbow) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley threw 15 pitches off a mound Saturday, and he's slated for another bullpen session several days laster. While the southpaw's recent progress has been encouraging, he doesn't yet have a timetable for his return to game action.
Apr 16 2022Miley (elbow) threw 15 pitches off a mound Saturday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley missed the start of the season due to left elbow inflammation, but he's been taking steps in the right direction over the past week. He still has a way to go before he's ready for game action.
Apr 10 2022Miley (elbow) has been able to play light catch, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley was shut down for 10 days April 1 due to inflammation in his left elbow. While he is making some progress, he does not appear to be all that close to a return.
Apr 7 2022The Cubs placed Miley (elbow) on the 10-day injured list Thursday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He'll open the season on the IL along with Alec Mills (back) and Adbert Alzolay (lat), with the their absences clearing the way for Justin Steele, Keegan Thompson and the newly-signed Drew Smyly to capture spots in the Cubs' rotation coming out of spring training. Miley was shut down last week due to his inflamed left elbow and is expected to be re-evaluated in the coming days, but he appears likely to miss more than the minimum 10 days.
Mar 28 2022Miley (neck) could be skipped in the Cubs' rotation to begin the season, potentially not making his debut until April 16 at Colorado, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley profiles as the team's No. 3 starter as the season moves along, but he could operate as the fifth starter in the early going due to his delayed start to camp. That could mean the veteran sticks in Arizona to get in some extra work while his teammates head to Chicago for the first series of the year, where a No. 5 pitcher won't be needed. The 35-year-old would then join up with them for the first road trip. This would allow Miley extra time to ramp up before potentially starting April 16 at Coors Field.
Mar 25 2022Miley (neck) will throw a live batting practice session Sunday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley ended last season on the injured list with a strained neck, though his delayed start to camp is supposedly due to the Cubs' "veteran" program and not due to that injury. He won't be able to throw many Cactus League innings prior to Opening Day, however, so it's possible he's on a pitch count for his first start or two of the regular season.
Mar 20 2022Miley (neck) is behind schedule early in spring training but is expected to throw a bullpen session Monday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley indicated his late ramp-up isn't injury related and is instead a part of a "veteran" program. The 35-year-old joined the Cubs in November after being let go by the Reds despite posting a 3.37 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 125:50 K:BB over 163 innings last season.
Nov 7 2021The Cubs exercised Miley's (neck) $10 million option for 2022 on Sunday, Russell Dorsey of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This move comes as no surprise after the Cubs claimed Miley from Cincinnati's waivers Friday. The lefty will be 35 years old when the 2022 campaign begins and he'll be coming off a neck injury, but he's also coming off an excellent 2021 season in which he posted a 3.37 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 163 innings. Even if he regresses next year, Miley still figures to be a bargain at $10 million.
Nov 5 2021Miley (neck) was claimed off waivers by the Cubs on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran lefty's underlying numbers may not fully support his 3.37 ERA this season, but seeing him land on waivers was still a surprise. He didn't strike out many batters (18.1 percent), but he avoided walks (7.2 percent) and kept the ball on the ground at a 49.4 percent clip, leading to a 3.97 FIP and 4.07 xFIP. If his ERA regresses to match those ERA estimators next season, the Cubs will likely still be quite happy to have him at a modest $10 million, though there's of course some risk that he regresses far more than that in his age-35 season. Miley missed the tail end of the regular season with a neck strain, but there's been no indication that it's the type of injury which will delay his preparation for spring training.
Sep 28 2021Miley (neck) won't return during the regular season, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley was placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained neck last week and would have been eligible to return during the Reds' final series of the regular season, but manager David Bell ruled the southpaw out for the year with the team on the brink of elimination. He made 28 starts during his age-34 season and recorded a 3.37 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 163 innings.
Sep 25 2021Miley was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a strained neck, retroactive to Sept. 22. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley was originally scheduled to start Friday before having his outing pushed back due to the neck injury, but he appeared on track to take the mound Monday against the Pirates before being put on the IL. The move is retroactive to Wednesday, so the veteran left-hander will be eligible to be activated next weekend, though there's a strong chance he's already pitched his last game in 2021. Cionel Perez was recalled from Triple-A Louisville in a corresponding move.
Sep 24 2021Miley (neck) is on track to start Monday against Pittsburgh, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley would have been on schedule to start Friday against Washington but was pushed back due to a stiff neck. Previous reports indicated he'd pitch no sooner than Monday, but it looks as though he won't need to be delayed any more than that.
Sep 22 2021Miley won't make his next start until at least Monday's make-up game with the Pirates in Cincinnati after the Reds pushed him back in their pitching schedule while he manages a stiff neck, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Cincinnati had its series finale Wednesday with Pittsburgh postponed due to inclement weather, manager David Bell has elected to reorder the rotation. All of Luis Castillo, Sonny Gray, Vladimir Guerrero and Tyler Mahle will pick up starts in this weekend's series with the Nationals, so unless he's deployed out of the bullpen against Washington, Miley will go the entire week without pitching. The neck issue isn't viewed as a major concern, and Cincinnati may just want to skip Miley's turn as a result of his recent struggles. Over his last four outings, Miley has hammered for 18 runs (17 earned) in 18.1 innings while surrendering 36 hits, including seven long balls.
Sep 19 2021Miley (12-7) allowed six runs on nine hits and a walk over three innings Sunday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley served up home runs to Will Smith and Gavin Lux in the second inning and was taken deep for a third time the following inning by Corey Seager. He's given up seven homers in just 18.1 innings over his last four outings. The veteran righty's ERA has gone up from 2.74 to 3.37 during that span. Miley is lined up to face the Nationals at home next week.
Sep 14 2021Miley (12-6) was charged with the loss Tuesday against the Pirates after surrendering six runs (five earned) on 10 hits and a pair of walks while striking out one across 4.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While he's piecing together what once looked to be a borderline Cy Young season, Miley fell further down the ranks Tuesday. The left-hander just wasn't as sharp this time, letting the Pirates get to him early with a three-run first inning. Miley held things in check until the fifth, when he was lit up for another three runs en route to the loss. It was the second time this season the 34-year-old allowed six or more runs, and his second unfavorable outing over his last three starts. He'll have his work cut out for him during his next projected start Sunday against the Dodgers.
Sep 7 2021Miley (12-5) earned the win over the Cubs on Tuesday after firing seven innings of one-run ball. He gave up five hits and fanned eight without issuing a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After St. Louis knocked Miley around for five runs on 12 hits over four innings his last time out, he responded Tuesday with one of his most dominant outings of the season. He tied a season high with the eight strikeouts, a number fueled by 21 swingings strikes on his 101 pitches. Miley is now down to a 2.89 ERA over 25 starts this season -- he had a slightly better mark with Milwaukee in 2018, but that was over just 16 starts. The southpaw projects for a road outing in Pittsburgh early next week.
Sep 1 2021Miley (11-5) took the loss in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Cardinals, giving up five runs on 12 hits -- including three home runs -- and a walk over four innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 12 hits and three homers were both season-worst performances for the 34-year-old, while the outing was Miley's shortest since he lasted only three innings at Coors Field on May 14. Despite the stumble, he still sports a 2.97 ERA on the year with a 114:47 K:BB through 148.2 innings.
Aug 28 2021Miley (11-4) picked up the win Friday, allowing six hits and a walk over seven scoreless innings in a 6-0 victory over the Marlins. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's the third time in his last five starts the veteran southpaw has delivered seven shutout innings, and he hasn't been stuck with a losing decision since May 19. Miley is putting together arguably the best season of his career at 34 years old, and he'll take a 2.74 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 112:46 K:BB through 144.2 innings into his next outing.
Aug 21 2021Miley allowed two runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts through 4.2 innings, taking a no-decision in Saturday's 7-4 win over the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley cruised through his first four innings of work Saturday but ran into command issues in the fifth that ultimately cost him a chance to go deeper into the game. With two on and two out, Miley walked Miguel Rojas to load the bases. He then hit Jazz Chisholm to plate a run and followed that up by issuing a free pass to Jesus Aguilar on five pitches to score another. With the bases still loaded, manager David Bell opted to go to the bullpen. After an injury-plagued 2020 and a heavy workload in 2021, the 34-year-old's command has started to slip. In his last nine starts (56 innings), the southpaw has walked 23 batters. He walked just 22 opposing hitters in his first 14 starts (81.2 innings) of the season.
Aug 16 2021Miley (10-4) allowed four hits and a walk while striking out seven in seven scoreless innings to earn the win Monday against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley was hit hard in his last outing, as he allowed five runs in five innings against Atlanta. However, he bounced back with a strong showing against Chicago's faltering offense to earn his second win in his last three appearances. The southpaw's production has remained relatively consistent since the All-Star break, and he's posted a 2.95 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 36.2 innings across his last six starts. He tentatively lines up to make his next appearance at home against the Marlins on Saturday.
Aug 12 2021Miley completed five innings against Atlanta on Wednesday, allowing five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley clearly didn't have his best stuff in the contest, as he tossed only 45 of 77 pitches for strikes and surrendered five runs for only the second time this season. The left-handed hurler was able to avoid a loss, however, when the Reds mounted a comeback that sent the game into extra innings. Miley has struggled with walks of late, giving up 18 free passes over his past six starts covering 37.2 frames, but he has still managed to put up a strong 2.87 ERA while going 3-0 over that span. He'll likely make his next start at home against the Cubs early next week.
Aug 7 2021Miley (9-4) picked up the win in Friday's 10-0 rout of the Pirates, allowing six hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran southpaw got staked to a 7-0 lead after one inning, but Miley made sure Pittsburgh wouldn't get up off the mat. He hasn't lost a game since May 19, and Friday's quality start was his fifth in six outings since the beginning of July, a stretch during which he's posted a 2.06 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 24:16 K:BB through 39.1 innings.
Jul 31 2021Miley allowed three runs on four hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts over seven innings against the Mets on Saturday. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley departed with a 4-3 lead -- Javier Baez had hit his first homer as a Met in the sixth to make it a one-run game -- but the Cincinnati bullpen couldn't hang on to deliver the 34-year-old his ninth win over the year. Still, it was the fourth quality start in five July appearances for Miley, who keeps finding ways to be effective for both the Reds and fantasy managers. Miley is 8-4 on the year with a 2.92 ERA and 1.23 WHIP with an 88:36 K:BB in 114 innings, and he's tentatively lined up for a favorable home matchup with the Pirates in his next scheduled start.
Jul 27 2021Miley didn't factor into the decision Monday against the Cubs after allowing three runs on seven hits and five walks while fanning two across 4.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley's command was all over the place Monday, and the five walks represented a season-high mark for the veteran left-hander. He also ended a streak of nine straight outings in which he completed at least five innings. The southpaw is expected to make his next start during the Reds' weekend series against the Mets in New York.
Jul 20 2021Miley (8-4) allowed one earned run on seven hits and two walks with eight strikeouts over 6.1 innings, as he notched his eighth win of the season in Tuesday's 4-3 victory over the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley tied his season-high in strikeouts Tuesday night, as the left-hander settled in nicely after giving up a solo home run to Pete Alonso in the first inning. The 11-year veteran remains about as durable an arm as one can find in 2021, as this latest success marked his 11th trip to the sixth inning or later. He'll carry a sterling 2.72 ERA into his next start, which will likely come Monday against the Cubs.
Jul 9 2021Miley (7-4) allowed three walks and seven hits over eight scoreless innings Friday, striking out four and earning a win over the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley wasn't especially efficient but danced around multiple Milwaukee threats in his first scoreless appearance since June 6. He's been charged with two or fewer earned runs in eight of his last nine outings, lowering his season ERA to 2.80 through 96.1 innings. He's recorded a 44:15 K:BB during that same stretch. Miley will get back on the mound after the All-Star break.
Jul 4 2021Miley surrendered two runs on 10 hits and a walk with three strikeouts in 6.2 innings versus the Cubs on Sunday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Despite the elevated number of baserunners, Miley was still able to log a quality start for the fifth time in his last seven outings. He benefited from Cincinnati's defense turning two double plays while he was on the mound. The southpaw has a 3.06 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 72:23 K:BB across 88.1 innings this year. His last start before the All-Star break is expected to be during next weekend's four-game series in Milwaukee.
Jun 28 2021Miley allowed four runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out seven across six innings Monday against the Phillies. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley surrendered a pair of runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth, but his team would rally after his departure to get him off the hook for the loss. The southpaw hasn't received a decision in each of his last three starts, but he's pitched well of late, surrendering two runs or fewer in six of his last seven outings. Miley owns a 3.09 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with a 69:22 K:BB across 81.2 frames this season.
Jun 22 2021Miley allowed two runs on five hits and zero walks across seven innings during Tuesday's 10-7 win over the Twins. He had six strikeouts and didn't factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander was in line for the victory with the Reds leading 7-2 after the top of the eighth inning, but he was forced to settle for a no-decision after the Twins erupted for five runs in the bottom of the frame. Miley has given up only seven earned runs in five starts (32 innings) since his stint on the injured list in late May with a foot sprain. Overall he has a 2.85 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 62:19 K:BB across 75.2 innings this season.
Jun 17 2021Miley allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five across seven innings in a no-decision versus San Diego on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The two runs against the southpaw came on solo home runs by Fernando Tatis and Manny Machado. In 10 of his 12 starts this year, Miley has limited the opposition to two or fewer earned runs. He's posted a strong 2.88 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 56:19 K:BB across 68.2 innings. The southpaw lines up for a decent matchup next week on the road in Minnesota.
Jun 12 2021Miley (6-4) picked up the win in Saturday's 10-3 victory over the Rockies, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran southpaw got tagged for three runs in the second inning, but the Reds' offense erased the deficit in the third and kept on rolling. The quality start was the fifth of the season for Miley, and he'll take a 2.92 ERA and 51:17 K:BB through 61.2 innings into his next outing.
Jun 6 2021Miley didn't factor into the decision Sunday against the Cardinals despite tossing five scoreless innings, in which he allowed four hits and two walks while fanning eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was Miley's first no-decision of the campaign, but the left-hander has been tossing the ball well of late -- he has given up one or fewer runs in four of his last five starts (27.2 innings). His next start is scheduled for next week at home against the Rockies.
May 31 2021Miley (5-4) picked up the win in Monday's 11-1 rout over the Phillies, allowing one run on six hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran left-hander was making his first start since May 19 after recovering from a foot sprain, and Miley delivered his fourth quality start of the season while tossing 102 pitches (63 strikes). He'll take a 3.26 ERA and 40:14 K:BB through 49.2 innings into his next outing.
May 28 2021Miley (foot) will return from the injured list to start Monday against the Phillies, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Previous reports indicated Miley was on track to start Sunday against the Cubs, but he'll need one additional day before he's ready to go. The veteran lefty has had a very unusual May, throwing a no-hitter in his first start of the month before allowing eight runs in his next outing and then leaving early with a sprained foot in his third appearance. The sprain isn't a major issue, however, as he'll be back in game action within two weeks of suffering the injury.
May 27 2021Miley (foot) is expected to return from the 10-day injured list to start Sunday's game against the Cubs, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Expect Miley to throw a bullpen session Friday before the Reds make a formal ruling on his status for Sunday, the first day he'll be eligible to come off the IL. Miley accrued a 3.50 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in 43.2 innings through his first eight starts before landing on the IL on May 21 with a sprained left foot.
May 21 2021MIley was placed on the 10-day injured list with a sprained left foot Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley exited his start Wednesday against the Giants due to the injury. He'll be eligible to return May 30, though it's not yet clear whether or not he's expected to do so. Ashton Goudeau was recalled to take his place on the roster. His replacement in the rotation has yet to be announced, but the Reds don't need to figure one out right away, as they have an off day Monday.
May 19 2021Miley (4-4) tweaked his foot and exited Wednesday's start against the Giants after 4.2 innings, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. He took the loss after allowing one run on six hits with two strikeouts and zero walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Dave Bell indicated the left-hander could have remained in the contest, but the skipper "didn't want to take any chances" and called upon the bullpen. According to Goldsmith, Miley had an MRI and X-rays come back clean, so it's possible he doesn't miss a turn through the rotation.
May 14 2021Miley (4-3) took the loss to the Rockies on Friday, allowing eight runs on 11 hits and three walks while striking out five over three innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: On the heels of his no-hitter against Cleveland, Miley fell flat on his face in Colorado. The eight runs allowed matched Miley's total from his first six starts of the season combined. Pitching at altitude in a park with those dimensions is difficult for any pitcher, but especially so for a pitcher with Miley's modest swing-and-miss abilities. He still has a 3.69 ERA after this hiccup.
May 13 2021Miley's next start has been pushed back one day, switching spots with Luis Castillo, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Miley will pitch on Friday, with Castillo getting pushed up to Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley threw 114 pitches in Friday's no-hitter against Cleveland. "I think it accomplishes a couple of different things," Reds manager David Bell said on Wednesday. "Wade, there's somewhat not only physical effort that went into his no-hitter the other day, but just the emotional, the mental grind of [114] pitches, complete game and then everything surrounding it."
May 7 2021Miley (4-2) pitched a no-hitter versus Cleveland on Friday. He walked one and struck out eight in the win. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley's bid for a perfect game ended in the sixth inning when Cleveland's Amed Rosario reached on an error. Two batters later, Miley walked Cesar Hernandez, but he rebounded well over the final three frames. The 34-year-old southpaw needed 114 pitches (72 strikes) to complete the historic feat. He's been effective this year with a 2.00 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 27:8 K:BB across 36 innings. Miley is projected to face the Pirates in a favorable matchup next week.
Apr 30 2021Miley (3-2) picked up the win in Friday's 8-6 victory over the Cubs, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over five innings while striking out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran southpaw gave up runs in each of the first two innings, but Miley settled down afterward and benefited from another offensive eruption by the Reds. He exited after throwing 99 pitches (61 strikes), and he'll take a 2.67 ERA and 19:7 K:BB through 27 innings into his next outing.
Apr 24 2021Miley (2-2) allowed two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two across six innings to take the loss Saturday against St. Louis. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley got off to a shaky start, as he allowed three singles and one earned run in the first inning. However, he rebounded to turn in another strong outing by letting only three more hitters reach base across his next five frames of work. Despite punching out only 16 batters across 22 innings, Miley has maintained a strong 2.45 ERA to this point in the season. He's projected to draw his next start Friday against the Cubs.
Apr 18 2021Miley fell to 2-1 after he surrendered four runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five over five innings in Sunday's 6-3 loss to Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer, Miley was ejected after complaining from the dugout about a strike call on teammate Jesse Winker, but the southpaw's day was already done at that point. After shutting out the opposition over his first 11 innings of the season, Miley's scoreless streak was snapped when Jose Ramirez took him deep for a two-out, solo home run in the top of the first inning. Miley would later serve up another three-run bomb in the fourth inning, which was all the offensive support Cleveland ace Shane Bieber would need to lead his side to the victory column.
Apr 13 2021Miley (2-0) continued his dominant form in Monday's 3-0 win over the Giants, as he didn't allow a run through five innings and struck out three while only allowing two hits and a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley has yet to top 80 pitches in either of his first two starts of the season, as manager David Bell seems to be taking a cautious approach with the 34-year-old after he's been limited to just six starts over the last two years due to various injuries. Miley has been smooth through his first two starts, allowing no runs on just four hits while sporting a 9:2 K:BB across 11 innings. He typically doesn't rely on strikeouts to get through his outings and has found success in the past by inducing soft contact. Miley's next scheduled to go head-to-head with one of the game's best in the Indians' Shane Bieber on Sunday.
Apr 6 2021Miley (1-0) cruised against the Pirates on Tuesday, throwing six scoreless innings while striking out six, giving up two hits and one walk to pick up the win in a 14-1 rout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds' bats exploded in support of Miley on Tuesday, making this a chance for an easy win, which he capably converted. He'll get his next turn in the rotation Monday against the Giants.
Mar 23 2021Miley threw 65 pitches and four simulated innings in a live batting practice session to stay on schedule for his turn in the rotation Tuesday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley is locked into a Reds rotation slot to begin the season, so long as he stays healthy - he had a scare with a hamstring cramp earlier in March and missed time with multiple injuries last season. The Reds don't plan on going with a four-man rotation in April even though they have four off-days early on, so Miley should get his regular turn this month.
Mar 15 2021Miley (hamstring) threw 35 pitches in a bullpen session Sunday and will start Tuesday's game against the Rockies, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley left his previous start with a left hamstring injury, but he said he wasn't concerned and that his removal was purely precautionary. That optimism seems accurate, as he'll remain on schedule Tuesday and should be set to take his place near the back of the Opening Day rotation.
Mar 12 2021Miley isn't concerned about the hamstring issue that caused him to be pulled Thursday against the White Sox, calling his removal purely precautionary, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley had already gotten in his intended number of pitchers, so he doesn't think the injury will affect his spring buildup in any meaningful way. Players are typically on the optimistic side regarding their own health, but if Miley is able to take his next turn on the mound then there likely won't be any reason to fear for his readiness for Opening Day.
Mar 11 2021Miley was pulled from Thursday's spring training contest with a hamstring injury, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley was seen pointing to his left leg while meeting with trainers as he was being pulled from the game. The severity of the injury remains unknown and it could affect his ability to ramp up in time for his first few turns through the rotation in the regular season.
Feb 9 2021When describing the Reds rotation in advance of spring training, Reds GM Nick Krall considered Miley the fourth starter, with there being a competition between Michael Lorenzen, Tejay Antone, José De León and Jeff Hoffman for the fifth starter's job, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. "Right now, Luis (Castillo), Sonny (Gray) and Tyler Mahle are probably the first three starters," Krall said. "And then you've got Wade Miley, who has been a starter his whole career." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley might have a head start over those other starters, and that he hasn't been a reliever much in his career probably helps, but he'll have to perform right away to hold them off. He's coming off of a season ruined by multiple injuries.
Sep 23 2020Miley (shoulder) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley spent nearly a month on the injured list with a left shoulder strain, but he'll be available out of the bullpen for the final few games of the regular season. The southpaw worked out of the rotation prior to the injury, posting a 6.57 ERA and 1.78 WHIP over 12.1 innings across four starts this year.
Sep 19 2020Miley (shoulder) threw in a simulated game Saturday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley has missed over three weeks with a shoulder strain. If his shoulder checks out fine following Saturday's session, he's expected to be activated soon, though he'll likely appear out of the bullpen given that he hasn't built his workload back up yet.
Sep 12 2020Miley (shoulder) has no specific return date after feeling soreness Thursday following a side throwing session, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Time is starting to run out on the season, but to that point, manager David Bell still expects Miley to pitch again this year. "Just some continued muscle soreness," Bell said. "Nothing overly concerning or anything that's going to knock him out for the year or anything like that. But we did need to back him off on his throwing, and really no timetable to get him back into the game, unfortunately."
Sep 10 2020Miley (shoulder) was sorer than anticipated following Wednesday's side session and isn't expected to return over the weekend, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Initial reports from Miley's throwing session were positive, but he's facing a delay in his return after feeling some soreness Thursday. Manager David Bell said that he doesn't expect him back over the weekend following his step back in his recovery. A timetable for his return hasn't yet been established.
Sep 9 2020Miley (shoulder) threw a side session Wednesday that went well, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley has been working his way back from a left shoulder strain that has kept him sidelined since Aug. 28. He threw a simulated game Friday, and manager David Bell said that he should return to the team soon following his successful side session. It's unclear when he'll take the mound for the Reds, but the southpaw's return appears to be imminent.
Sep 4 2020Miley (shoulder) will pitch a simulated game Friday at the Reds' alternate training facility at Prasco, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager David Bell suggested that Miley could rejoin the Reds on their current road trip, but didn't specify exactly when. That could become pertinent with Sonny Gray's next start getting pushed back.
Aug 28 2020Miley was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with a left shoulder strain, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran southpaw delivered four scoreless innings on 64 pitches Thursday against the Brewers, and apparently the shortness of the outing was related to the injury. Miley doesn't have an official timeline for his return, but he'll be eligible to be activated Sept. 8. It's his second stint on the injured list this season, as he previously missed time with a groin injury.
Aug 22 2020Miley (0-3) gave up three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out three in five innings in a loss to the Cardinals on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley gave up a two-run single to Tommy Edman in the third inning and a solo shot to Harrison Bader in the fifth to account for the offense against him. Saturday was the first time this season that Miley has pitched past the second inning. He's got a 9.72 ERA, 2.40 WHIP and eight strikeouts in 8.1 innings. The 33-year-old lefty will continue searching for his first win when he faces the Cubs on Friday.
Aug 19 2020Miley (undisclosed) is expected to start Saturday in St. Louis, John Fay of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley suffered a groin injury early in the season and appeared to suffer some sort of injury in his return from the injured list back on Aug. 12, as he seemed in some discomfort while covering first base in the second inning and exited shortly after. He's been able to have some extra rest due to a positive COVID-19 test cancelling a few games for the Reds, as his next start will come 10 days after his previous outing.
Aug 12 2020Miley allowed one run on two hits and two walks over 1.2 innings in a loss to the Royals on Wednesday. He struck out two batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As Mark Sheldon of MLB.com noted, Miley looked like he may have hurt himself covering first base on a groundout in the second inning. The lefty stayed in the game initially, but walked the next batter and was then lifted at 44 pitches. Miley was just making his return from a groin injury. Tyler Mahle endured some struggles of his own in relief of Miley on Wednesday, but Mahle pitched well as a starter during Miley's absence and it would be an easy switch for the Reds to make in their rotation, whether it be for performance or health reasons.
Aug 9 2020Miley (groin) will return from the injured list Wednesday to start against the Royals, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran left-hander landed on the shelf with the groin injury after surrendering six runs (five earned) over 1.2 innings July 27 against the Cubs in his first start of the year. Miley had a 3.98 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 140:61 K:BB over 167.1 innings last season with the Astros.
Jul 30 2020Miley will be placed on the 10-day injured list with a groin injury, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley struggled in his season debut against the Cubs on Monday, and his injury designation could help provide an explanation for his lack of results. He'll officially be placed on the injured list Friday, which means that he'll miss his scheduled start for the weekend. As a result, Anthony DeSclafani (shoulder) will start Saturday's contest with Tyler Mahle taking the mound Sunday. The severity of Miley's injury is unclear, but the southpaw may not have a spot in the rotation once he returns with DeSclafani set to return.
Jul 27 2020Miley (0-1) took the loss Monday as the Reds fell 8-7 to the Cubs, coughing up six runs (five earned) on four hits and two walks over 1.2 innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A rain delay before the start of the game seemed to mess with Miley's focus, as he plunked Kris Bryant with his second pitch of the night and then walked Anthony Rizzo. The Cubs took advantage to score four runs in the first inning, and after they tacked on another in the second, Miley's night was done after 57 pitches (32 strikes). One bad start probably won't cost the veteran southpaw his spot in the rotation, but with Anthony DeSclafani (shoulder) set to come off the injured list this weekend, Miley may not be able to afford a second one.
Jul 18 2020Miley pitched four scoreless innings in Friday's intrasquad scrimmage, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out seven, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was interesting to see Miley matched up against Tyler Mahle, who could work in tandem with him during the regular season. Miley will be the Reds' fourth starter to begin the season, with his first start coming against the Cubs if everything goes according to plan.
Mar 6 2020Miley's spring training struggles continued Friday against the A's, as he gave up four runs over 2.1 innings, allowing two hits and four walks, with the big blow coming on a two-run homer by Matt Olson. So far this spring Miley has a 17.18 ERA. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The usual caveat about spring training stats applies, as does the suggestion that the ball was flying out on Friday. Still, Miley finished 2019 poorly with the Astros, so one would like to see some positive performances from him before drafting him this spring.
Dec 16 2019Miley agreed to a two-year, $15 million contract with Cincinnati on Monday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley is the latest addition to a Cincinnati rotation that has significantly improved this offseason. He could find himself in the No. 4 spot in the rotation with Luis Castillo, Trevor Bauer and Sonny Gray (elbow) likely filling the first three slots. Miley enjoyed a 14-6 record in 2019 with the Astros, posting a 3.98 ERA and 1.34 WHIP with a 140:61 K:BB over 167.1 innings.
Oct 12 2019Miley is not on the Astros' ALCS roster, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley struggled in his only appearance in the ALDS, allowing three runs (two earned) off four hits and one walk while recording one strikeout in 2.2 innings pitched. The Astros elected to carry a pitching staff of only right-handers heading into the ALCS, leaving the southpaw off the roster for the series.
Oct 4 2019Miley is on the Astros' ALDS roster. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley's 3.98 ERA on the season is perfectly respectable, but he fell off hard down the stretch, posting a 16.68 ERA and a 3.09 WHIP in five September starts. The Astros' haven't announced their rotation plans for a possible Game 4, but Miley's late struggles could mean he loses out to Jose Urquidy for that start.
Sep 27 2019Miley did not factor in the decision against the Angels on Thursday, tossing four innings and giving up three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out a pair. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley labored in four innings of work, needing 93 pitches -- only 54 of which were thrown for strikes -- to retire 12 batters. He pitched from behind throughout most of the appearance, firing first-pitch balls to 11 of the 19 batters he faced. The southpaw was remarkably consistent through his first 22 starts, allowing no more than four earned runs in any outing, but he has fallen apart in September, posting a 16.68 ERA over five starts. Miley finishes 2019 with a 14-6 record, 3.98 ERA and 1.34 WHIP; it remains to be seen what role -- if any -- he will have for the Astros in the postseason.
Sep 22 2019Miley (14-6) took the loss Saturday as the Astros fell 8-4 to the Angels, giving up four runs on four hits and a walk in one-plus innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A David Fletcher solo shot to lead off the game set the tone, and after Miley allowed three runs in the first inning, he got yanked when he put the first two batters aboard to begin the second. The southpaw has been dreadful in September, posting a 22.09 ERA and 4:5 K:BB through only 7.1 innings over four starts, but Miley will get one more chance to regain some momentum heading into the postseason when he faces the Angels again on the road Thursday.
Sep 15 2019Miley (14-5) allowed two earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks across six innings as he earned his 14th win of the season Sunday against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley had a brutal start to the month of September as he gave up 12 earned runs in just 0.1 innings pitched. Prior to those two starts, Miley was on an absolute tear, compiling a 2.54 ERA through July and August while posting a 54:23 K:BB across 60.1 innings. The left-hander finally returned to his old self Sunday which was definitely a huge confidence booster for a guy the Astros need to produce in the playoffs. Miley is expected to take the mound next Saturday against the Angels who are now without their star center fielder, Mike Trout, for the rest of the season.
Aug 30 2019Miley allowed one run (zero earned) on two hits and five walks while striking out five over 3.2 innings Friday against the Blue Jays. He didn't factor into the decision.
Aug 24 2019Miley (13-4) recorded the win Saturday against the Angels after giving up one run on five hits over five innings. He had four strikeouts and one walk.
Aug 19 2019Miley (12-4) picked up the win against the Tigers on Monday, giving up three earned runs on 10 hits over 5.2 innings, striking out eight and walking none as the Astros

Jul 28 2019Miley (9-4) allowed five hits and two walks over five shutout innings Sunday, fanning six batters and earning the win over St. Louis.

Jul 20 2018Miley allowed one run (zero earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out five across six innings as he didn't factor into the decision.Miley exited in a 1-1 game, with the only run against him coming on a passed ball in the third inning. The 31-year-old lefty has made two starts since coming off the disabled list, allowing two earned runs with seven strikeouts over 11 innings. Miley's next start figures to come Wednesday against the Nationals.
Jul 12 2018Miley (1-1) pitched five innings Thursday, allowing two runs on four hits and five walks in the 6-3 loss to the Pirates. He struck out five and was handed a loss.Miley made just his second start of the season and first since May 2 after a trip to the disabled list with an oblique injury. He obviously struggled with his command and needed 95 pitched to finish five frames. Miley now owns a 2.38 ERA and 9:9 K:BB ratio in 11.1 innings. He'll look to get back in the win column at home against the Dodgers next Friday.
Jul 12 2018Miley (oblique) was reinstated from the 60-day DL prior to his outing against Pittsburgh on Thursday. This will mark Miley's second start of the year and first since May 8 against Cleveland when he suffered a strained right oblique. The left-hander was able to appear in four minor-league games while on a rehab assignment over the past few weeks and should be stretched out enough to toss five innings after pitching with Double-A Biloxi on Sunday.
Jul 8 2018Miley (oblique) is expected to rejoin the Brewers during their upcoming three-game series in Miami, and is a candidate to start Thursday in Pittsburgh, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Miley made his fourth rehab start Saturday and looked sharp, striking out four across four scoreless and hitless innings. This followed up another quality performance in his third rehab start, where he struck out four across 4.1 scoreless frames. The left-hander is eligible to come off the 60-day disabled list Monday, but the exact day of his activation is uncertain at this time. It should come at or before Thursday, however, when the Brewers need a fifth starter for the series opener against the Pirates.
Jun 29 2018Miley (oblique) allowed five earned runs over 3.1 innings in a rehab start with Double-A Biloxi on Thursday.Thursday's results weren't pretty for Miley, but he was able to up his pitch count to 47 after making 31 tosses his first time out. Miley is expected to make at least two more rehab starts before the Brewers decide his next step. He is eligible to come off the disabled list July 9, but the Brewers will not be forced to activate him until July 21, so they could wait until after the All-Star break to bring him back.
Jun 17 2018Miley (oblique) threw live batting practice at Miller Park on Sunday, and is expected to see at least four rehab starts before his activation, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.Operating under the assumption that everything went well for Miley on Sunday, the team is expected to send the left-hander to Double-A Biloxi to begin a rehab assignment later in the week. He's not eligible to return from the 60-day DL until July 9 anyway, so the Brewers can afford for Miley to play it safe with his rehab. It's unclear exactly how Miley will fit in upon his return, as the Milwaukee starting staff has exceeded expectations while contributing to a 3.41 team ERA, good for the fourth-best mark in all of baseball.
Jun 16 2018Miley (oblique) is scheduled to throw a simulated game Sunday, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Miley resumed playing catch in late May and now appears to be closing in on a minor-league rehab assignment. The 31-year-old isn't eligible to come off the 60-day disabled list until July 9, but would likely need a handful of rehab starts regardless.
May 28 2018Miley (oblique) resumed playing catch Monday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. He is on the 60-day disabled list, and is expected to be out until at least early July. It is unclear whether Miley will stick in the big leagues or be sent to Triple-A once healthy.
May 12 2018The Brewers transferred Miley (oblique) to the 60-day disabled list Saturday.Miley hit the 10-day DL on Tuesday with a right oblique strain and was given a 6-to-8 week recovery timetable, so the shift to the 60-day isn't all that surprising. The veteran left-hander will be eligible to return in early July around the All-Star break.
May 11 2018The Brewers expect Miley (oblique) to be out 6-to-8 weeks, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. The initial timeline put forth by Milwaukee was 4-to-6 weeks, but that was only ever a rough estimate. Miley is now likely looking at a return in late June, as the Brewers turn to Brent Suter and Brandon Woodruff in the starting rotation with Zach Davies (shoulder) yet to come off the disabled list.
May 9 2018Miley (oblique) will miss 4-to-6 weeks, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. This is a rough estimate on the part of the Brewers' medical staff, but it sounds like Miley will be back in mid-to-late June. He only recorded one out before exiting Tuesday's start with the oblique strain. Once healthy, he will be an option to slot into the big-league rotation.
May 9 2018Miley was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a right oblique strain.Miley lasted just one out into his second start of the season before suffering the injury. He underwent an MRI on Tuesday night and is likely to miss more than a few weeks, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Brent Suter is the likely candidate to fill in for him in the rotation. Depending on Miley's timeline, there's a chance that there isn't a rotation spot for hime to return to once he's healthy, as Jimmy Nelson is expected to be back from his shoulder injury in early July.
May 8 2018Miley exited in the first inning of Tuesday's start against the Indians with an apparent injury, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.Miley gave up a lead-off double to Francisco Lindor, walked Jason Kipnis and retired Jose Ramirez before exiting in the middle of Michael Brantley's at-bat. It is only Miley's second start of the season after suffering a groin strain in spring training, but the specifics of this injury remain unclear. More information should become available once the Brewers officially announce the injury.
May 8 2018Miley sustained right oblique strain in Tuesday's start against the Indians, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.Miley exited in the first inning of the game after throwing only 19 pitches. It's a tough break for the 31-year-old in only his second start of the season after a spring-training groin strain. No timetable has been announced, but a trip to the disabled list seems likely with Brent Suter -- who relieved Miley on Tuesday -- the obvious candidate to reclaim his role in the Brewers' starting rotation.
May 2 2018Miley (1-0) held the Reds to just one run on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts through six innings to pick up the win Wednesday night.Miley averaged just 91.5 mph on his fastball, but he mixed speeds fantastically, as he used five different pitches and used the fastball just 33 times out of 97 pitches. His cutter was particularly nasty, as it drew four whiffs on 33 offerings. As bad as the Reds have been this year, it hasn't been the offense's fault -- their 4.1 runs per game ranks ninth out of 15 NL teams; the blame for their 7-24 record lies with the league-worst pitching staff and their 5.57 ERA. It's easy to dismiss Miley's performance due to the record of his opponent, but holding the Reds to one run at cozy Great American Ballpark is still no small feat. At the very least, this performance should be enough to earn Miley one more turn through the Brewers rotation.
May 1 2018The Brewers selected Miley's contract from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Tuesday.Oliver Drake was designated for assignment to make room on the Brewers' 40-man roster as Miley is slated to start against the Reds on Wednesday. The 31-year-old put together a strong spring training before suffering a groin strain as he attempted to crack Milwaukee's Opening Day roster, and now takes over Brent Suter's spot in the rotation.
Apr 29 2018Miley (groin) will be tabbed with the start Wednesday against the Reds. The Brewers have decided to add Miley to the starting rotation and move Brent Suter to the bullpen. With Jimmy Nelson still rehabbing from a shoulder injury, Miley looks to become the fifth starter until Nelson's return. The 31-year-old has been battling a groin strain since spring training, but he'll be ready to go for Wednesday's start against Cincinnati.
Apr 5 2018Miley (groin) is scheduled for a bullpen session with Double-A Biloxi on Friday, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. This is a step in the right direction for the left-hander, as he hasn't been able to throw off a mound since tearing his groin on March 21. Miley still isn't expected to be back in full action until later in April since he still has to build back up to a starter's workload.
Apr 4 2018Miley (groin) is hoping to return to the mound sometime next week, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Miley is currently limited to playing catch while rehabbing with Double-A Biloxi. Once he's able to resume mound work, Miley will have to build back up to a starter's workload, so he'll likely be sidelined for another month or so. In the meantime, Brandon Woodruff will remain in the Brewers' rotation.
Mar 22 2018Miley (groin) will remain with the Brewers organization while rehabbing his injury over the next 2-to-4 weeks, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. The veteran is on a minor-league deal that has major league incentives if he ultimately makes the 25-man roster. Because Miley is injured, his opt-out date has been pushed back until he can resume pitching. Look for the Brewers to start the season with either Brent Suter or Brandon Woodruff as their No.5 starter with Miley on the shelf until at least mid-April.
Mar 22 2018Brewers manager Craig Counsell said Wednesday that Miley (groin) won't throw for at least two weeks, meaning the southpaw won't crack the team's Opening Day rotation, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Even if the discomfort in Miley's groin area completely subsides in the next two weeks, he would still likely require an additional two weeks beyond that to build up to the point of being ready to start games. As such, Miley is realistically looking at around a month-long absence, in a best-case scenario. The injury is inconvenient timing for a pitcher who was making a compelling case for a starting spot, and now muddles his future with the Brewers. If Miley isn't released before Saturday, he would be owed a $100,000 retention bonus while he continues to rehab under team supervision. It's also conceivable that the team could release Miley and re-sign him to another minor-league contract at a later date, though the Brewers would run the risk of him electing to sign with another club.
Mar 22 2018Miley's MRI showed a slight tear in his left groin after being diagnosed with a strain following Wednesday's game, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Miley stated that he's unsure as to how long he might be sidelined and the club has yet to release any sort of timetable for the southpaw, but that may not be his most immediate hurdle at this point in time. First, the Brewers will have to decide if Miley is worth keeping on the roster, as he's set to receive a $100,000 retention bonus if he's still on the team by Saturday. Miley had been having an impressive camp with Milwaukee thus far, and said that he wants to remain with the club, but it seems unlikely that the team would add him to the big-league roster and the disabled list in the event that this injury forces him to miss an extended period of time. Expect an update on this situation in the coming days.
Mar 21 2018Miley was diagnosed with a strained left groin and is set to undergo an MRI, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.Miley suffered the injury while trying to field a bunt during Wednesday's Cactus League game against the A's. The severity of the issue remains unclear at this point, but more should be known once his MRI results surface. Miley appeared to be on the verge of earning a spot in the Brewers' Opening Day rotation, so this injury comes at an unfortunate time.
Mar 21 2018Miley left Wednesday's outing after suffering an injury trying to field a bunt in the fifth inning, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Miley immediately came up lame after fielding the ball and had to be escorted to the dugout with head athletic trainer Dan Wright. This injury comes at a very inopportune time for the left-hander, as Miley appeared to be on the verge of earning the final spot in the Brewers' rotation. There will be an update on his status in the coming hours.
Mar 16 2018Miley has impressed this spring while competing for a spot in the Brewers' starting rotation, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Miley needs to earn his way onto the Brewers' roster after joining the club on a minor-league deal, and he has done just about all he could this spring to do so, posting a 15:4 K:BB while giving up just two earned runs in 13 innings (1.38 ERA) over four appearances. Brent Suter, Junior Guerra, and Brandon Woodruff are all still alive in the race for either for a rotation spot -- whether there are one or two openings remains to be seen -- but the Brewers can option any or all of them to the minors and could lose Miley if he does not break camp with the team, which is a notable item in his favor.
Mar 7 2018Miley has not allowed an earned run while posting an 11:1 K:BB in eight innings over three spring appearances for the Brewers.Miley was tagged for three unearned runs his last time out Tuesday, but he is otherwise off to a great start with his new squad, allowing just seven runners to reach base in his eight frames while punching out plenty other hitters. Miley is on a minor-league deal with the Brewers, but he is making a strong case early on to break camp with a back-end spot in the team's starting rotation.
Feb 14 2018Miley signed a minor-league contract with the Brewers on Wednesday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. The deal guarantees Miley $2.5 million if he makes the major-league roster, and $5.7 million if he earns a rotation spot and reaches 29 starts. The 31-year-old is looking to bounce back after posting a career-worst 5.61 ERA and 1.73 WHIP across 32 starts (157.1 innings) with the Orioles in 2017. He'll compete with Brandon Woodruff, Brent Suter, Junior Guerra and Yovani Gallardo for one of the team's final two rotation spots in spring training, though he could wind up in the bullpen if he doesn't break camp as a starter.
Nov 3 2017Miley will head to free agency after the Orioles elected to decline his $12 million club option for the 2018 season, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.Miley will receive a $500,000 buyout from the team, and will look to start fresh with a new organization after spending the last year and a half with Baltimore. During the past season, the soon-to-be 29-year-old posted a career-worst 5.61 ERA and 1.73 WHIP during 32 starts. Although he seemed to be finding his form during August, Miley wound up allowing 16 earned runs in his last 8.2 innings as an Oriole.
Sep 29 2017Miley (8-15) allowed four runs on five hits and five walks with six strikeouts over four innings to take the loss Friday to the Rays.Miley's season ends with five straight losses, including four starts of at least four runs allowed. His final ERA sits at 5.61 over 159.1 innings and a brutal 141:93 K:BB. This is his second straight season with an ERA over 5.00, and he hasn't posted an ERA under 4.00 since 2013 with Arizona.
Sep 29 2017Miley expressed interest in returning to Baltimore next season, but the club has yet to offer encouraging remarks when asked if it will pick up the pitcher's $12 million team option for 2018, Jon Meoli of The Baltimore Sun reports. It's hard to believe that the O's would even think about paying Miley $12 million after the season he's had. According to FanGraphs, the southpaw has tossed a league-worst 35 percent of his pitches for strikes, and only 41 percent of those have elicited swings (which is also worst in the league). "We're going to need to improve our starting pitching in 2018," said VP of baseball operations Dan Duquette. "Obviously, we're disappointed with our staff this year. There's time for that." Miley stringed together a few good runs in 2017, but overall it was a disastrous campaign that will likely have him looking for a new team this winter.
Sep 21 2017Miley (8-14) was tagged for six runs on four hits -- including two homers -- and four walks over 4.1 innings in a 9-0 loss to the Red Sox on Wednesday. This marks his second straight six-run outing, but at least he lasted four full innings longer than his last start, in which he recorded just a single out. Once upon a time, Miley was a promising starter, but he's putting the finishing touches on his second straight season with an ERA over 5.00, and his 1.70 WHIP is the second-worst mark among MLB pitchers who've thrown at least 100 innings.
Sep 14 2017Miley (8-13) allowed six runs on six hits and recorded just a single out during Thursday's loss to the Yankees.Miley appeared to be turning a corner with just 16 earned runs allowed through his previous eight games, but Thursday's outing was a stern reminder that the lefty should continue to be viewed as a risky fantasy asset. Miley sports a discouraging 5.32 ERA and 1.70 WHIP entering his next projected start against the Red Sox at Camden Yards.
Sep 8 2017Miley (8-12) allowed four runs on six hits and three walks a striking out four over 5.2 innings to take the loss Friday against the Indians.Miley gave up a three-run homer in the first inning, before settling down and not allowing his final run of the evening until the sixth inning, but in a game in which the Orioles bats fell silent, he had no chance to post a victory. This was the first time in four starts that he allowed more than two runs in an outing, and despite the loss, he's been a solid fantasy option down the stretch. He'll make his next start Thursday against the Yankees.
Sep 6 2017Miley will start Friday against the Indians, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports. He is the only probable the O's are listing for this weekend, which could signal a return to a five-man rotation in Baltimore. Miley has allowed three earned runs or fewer in each of his last seven starts with a 37:19 K:BB in that span (38.2 innings).
Sep 3 2017Miley (8-11) was tagged with the loss Saturday against the Blue Jays after allowing two runs on four hits and two walks in six innings of work. He also struck out six.The southpaw was humming along before giving up a solo home run to Kevin Pillar in the fifth, but he wound up producing a solid outing despite landing in the loss column. Since the start of August, Miley has been one of the better starters for the O's, producing a 2.67 ERA and 32 strikeouts in six starts. He'll look to continue this good stretch of starts when he takes the hill Saturday in Cleveland.
Aug 27 2017Miley (8-10) gave up one run on seven hits and three walks over five innings in Sunday's victory over the Red Sox.Although the Red Sox were able to get plenty of baserunners with Miley on the mound, they were only able to get one across the plate as Miley picked up his second straight win. Miley's pitch count ran high (101) and there wasn't much control, as just 59 of his pitches were strikes. However, Miley was still able to keep the opposition from scoring as Sunday marked the fifth time that he's allowed two runs or fewer over his last six outings. He'll look to carry his momentum into his next scheduled start, which figures to come Saturday against the Blue Jays.
Aug 21 2017Miley (7-10) allowed two runs on five hits and four walks across six innings to earn the win Monday against the Athletics. He struck out six.Miley allowed a run as three consecutive men reached in the third inning, but he cruised through the next few frames and was only scored upon via a solo home run. He threw just 53 percent of his pitches for strikes, but eight groundball outs and some timely put-aways propelled him to a quality start. Miley has now allowed two earned runs or fewer in four of his last five starts and will look to keep up his solid form next Monday against the Mariners.
Aug 20 2017Miley will make his next start Monday against the Athletics, Rich Dubroff of PressBoxonline.com reports.Miley had initially been scheduled to start the Orioles' game a day earlier against the Angels, but manager Buck Showalter opted to push the lefty back in the rotation to make room for Chris Tillman, who had been working out of the bullpen since Aug. 3. With Tillman pitching reasonably well Sunday, it's conceivable that Showalter could deploy a six-man rotation for the Orioles' upcoming six week, meaning Miley wouldn't be in line for two starts despite kicking off the proceedings for Baltimore. If Showalter does decide to streamline his rotation to put Miley on tap for a double dip during the week, the 30-year-old would still make for a risky lineup option in most formats, considering the 5.79 ERA and 1.55 WHIP he's supplied over seven starts since the All-Star break.
Aug 19 2017Miley may not start Sunday's game against the Angels, Eduardo A. Encina of The Baltimore Sun reports.Apparently, Chris Tillman, who was recently moved to the bullpen, could start Sunday's game if he is not used out of the bullpen Saturday. It is unclear if this means the Orioles might be moving Miley to the bullpen or just adding a sixth starter for this turn in the rotation. Miley has a 7.44 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 58 strikeouts over his last 65.1 innings. If Tillman is used in relief Saturday, it would seem that Miley would still be in line for Sunday's start.
Aug 16 2017Miley (6-10) allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four over 4.2 innings in a loss to the Mariners on Tuesday. The lefty failed to build on the momentum from his seven-inning gem his last time out, as he labored late and was ultimately pulled with one out remaining in the fifth. Miley has allowed five hits or fewer in each of his last five starts, but he leads all major-league pitchers with 72 walks on the season. He's a high-risk option who offers little strikeout upside as a streamer.
Aug 10 2017Miley (6-9) delivered seven innings of one-run ball to notch his sixth win of the season Thursday against the A's. He surrendered three hits and three walks while fanning seven batters. The lone run Miley surrendered was unearned as he dropped his season ERA to 5.19. He was able to limit base runners, something he has struggled to do for much of the season. Miley's outing Thursday was his longest start since he went 7.0 innings June 1 against Boston. He's lined up to make his next start Tuesday against his former team, the Seattle Mariners.
Aug 5 2017Miley (5-9) allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five across five innings, but received no decision Saturday against the Tigers.Miley gave up a two-run homer in the first inning, but went unscathed after that, while the offense was unable to provide him enough run support to earn him a victory. After a horrendous month of July, his solid outing was encouraging, though he'll likely need to string together a couple more strong performances before fantasy managers begin to regain trust in him. He'll make his next start Friday against the Athletics.
Aug 1 2017Miley went 2-3 in July while posting an 8.68 ERA and surrendering a .408 wOBA -- the worst such marks for any month during his seven-year career.Despite inducing groundballs at a career-high rate, Miley's 1.4 HR/9 through 22 starts is his worst ever. Command continues to plague the 30-year-old, who's 5.2 BB/9 is tied for highest in MLB. Miley's 1.76 WHIP is worst in baseball among qualified pitchers, although one could argue that his career-high .345 BABIP has something to do with that. More troubling than any of this may be the fact that batters have been squaring the ball up more than ever before against the righty, racking up a 34.6 percent hard-contact rate. With a large sample size in place, owners have no reason to hang on to Miley in hopes of a late-season rebound.
Jul 30 2017Miley (5-9) held the Rangers to two runs on four hits with one walk and five strikeouts over five innings in Sunday's 10-6 win.Miley has now gone 11 consecutive outings without a quality start, but this effort still represents a major improvement after his past three opponents tagged him for a combined 17 earned runs in 15.2 innings. Baltimore's bats made sure he walked away victorious in this one, staking the veteran southpaw to a 9-2 lead by the time he exited this contest after 105 pitches. A repeat of this result is the best Miley could hope for when he next takes the mound Friday against a righty-laden Tigers lineup.
Jul 26 2017Miley (4-9) gave up five runs on five hits and three walks over six innings while striking out four in Tuesday's 5-4 loss to the Rays. All five runs crossed the plate in the second inning, capped by Tim Beckham's three-run homer. Miley's now surrendered 17 runs -- including four home runs -- over his last 15.2 innings, leaving him with an ugly 5.69 ERA, 1.79 WHIP and 1.5 HR/9 on the year. The left-hander will next take the mound Monday at home against the Royals.
Jul 20 2017Miley allowed five runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out just three batters through five innings during Thursday's win over Texas. He didn't factor into the decision. The southpaw entered with a 10.19 ERA through his previous eight starts, and things didn't get much better Thursday. Miley now sports a 5.58 ERA and 1.82 WHIP for the season, so outside of helping in the strikeouts column (8.0 K/9), he provides very little fantasy value. The lefty projects to face the Rays at Tropicana Field in his next start.
Jul 15 2017Miley (4-8) allowed seven runs on nine hits and four walks while striking out four over 4.2 innings to take the loss on Saturday against the Cubs.Miley gave up just a single run over the first three innings, but fell apart in the fourth and fifth frames, leading to his eighth loss of the season. As the owner of a 5.40 ERA, he's a difficult player to use with much confidence in fantasy leagues. He'll make his next start Thursday against the Rangers.
Jul 9 2017Although a post All-Star rotation hasn't been made official, manager Buck Showalter expects Miley to start Saturday against the Cubs, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.Miley's first half was a tale of two worlds, as he maintained a 2.82 ERA through 11 games, then imploded for a 9.64 mark in his last seven starts. Drawing the World Series champions in the first game back from break is not ideal, but Miley has had success against some good lineups this year.
Jul 8 2017Miley (4-7) allowed one run on eight hits and three walks while striking out four over 5.2 innings to earn the victory Saturday against the Twins.Miley allowed plenty of base runners, but the only damage he sustained was a solo shot to Miguel Sano, as he earned his fourth victory of the campaign. This was the first time in seven outings that fewer than four runs crossed the plate against him, and with a 4.97 ERA, he's a difficult player to trust in fantasy lineups. He'll make his next start at a time yet to be determined after the All-Star break.
Jul 7 2017Miley will take the hill for Saturday's game against the Twins, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.Miley was knocked around for his worst appearance of the season during Monday's loss to the Brewers, but manager Buck Showalter will give him the ball for another opportunity this weekend. Showalter stated that Chris Tillman wasn't as prepared as he would've liked heading into the game, so Miley drew the start heading into the All-Star break.
Jul 5 2017Miley, who's been hammered for 29 runs over his last 20.1 inning, acknowledged that his pitching is out of sorts and needs adjustments, Andrew Gruman of MLB.com reports.Command has been Miley's Achilles heel of late, leading the lefty to a string of inefficient outings laced with deep counts and free passes. "You just have to keep grinding," Miley said. "You have to just keep working in the bullpen and just look for something to click. When it clicks, hopefully you can get headed in the right direction. I feel really good in my sides and in between, but it is just not translating, for whatever reason." Miley has fallen a long way since owning a 2.82 ERA after allowing just one earned run over seven innings against Boston on June 1. He'll get one more crack to right the ship before the break, but at this point, owners should look for more promising arms to deploy after the Midsummer Classic.
Jul 3 2017Miley (3-7) allowed seven runs on seven hits and two walks across 1.2 innings in Monday's loss to the Brewers. He struck out two.Miley was under duress early and often in this one, allowing five runs on four hits and two walks in the first inning before seeing another pair of runs come home in the second as he was removed with two outs. The left-hander has fallen on hard times after a solid start to the season, posting an 11.28 ERA over his last six starts to push his seasonal mark up to 5.20. Miley will look to stop the bleeding in his next start Saturday against the Twins.
Jun 28 2017Miley (3-6) gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits and four walks over five innings while striking out five in Wednesday's 4-0 loss to the Blue Jays. His early-season success is now a distant memory, as Miley has given up at least four runs in six of his last seven starts to leave him saddled with a 4.54 ERA. He'll try to turn things around in his next outing Monday on the road against the Brewers.
Jun 23 2017Miley (3-5) gave up four runs en route to taking the loss at home Thursday against the Indians. He allowed eight hits and two walks while notching three strikeouts. While it was far from a disastrous outing from Miley, he was inefficient and hittable once again. His inability to get through at-bats quickly drove his pitch count up to 111 in just 5.0 innings. His home splits still look solid on the surface (3.09 ERA, 31 K in 35.0 innings), but his 1.54 WHIP suggests he's had some luck in stranding runners at a high rate. Miley has also allowed at least four runs in each of his last three home starts. He's lined up to face the Blue Jays in Toronto on Wednesday for his next start.
Jun 17 2017Miley (3-4) allowed six runs -- five earned -- on six hits and four walks while striking out eight batters through 5.2 innings during Saturday's win over St. Louis.Miley certainly wasn't sharp, but Baltimore scored nine runs through the first two innings of the game, so the southpaw was able to put it in cruise control and collect his third win of the year. His 4.29 ERA and 1.61 WHIP aren't moving the fantasy needle, but he could prove to be a valuable contributor in the wins and strikeouts columns going forward. Miley sports an 8.3 K/9 for the year and has potential as a streaming option or low-priced flier in daily contests. A difficult home date against Cleveland is on tap for Miley, though.
Jun 12 2017Miley (2-4) allowed six runs on six hits and two walks over 2.1 innings in a loss to the White Sox on Monday. He did not record a strikeout.Miley served up a two-run homer to Kevan Smith in the second inning and then really unraveled in the third, allowing four runs on five hits before being lifted. He has now failed to complete three innings in back-to-back starts, with his ERA jumping more than a full run (from 2.82 to 3.97) in that span. The lefty will look to begin righting the ship this weekend at home against the Cardinals.
Jun 8 2017Miley (2-3) gave up four runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four over 2.2 innings but escaped with a no-decision in Wednesday's 9-6 win over the Pirates. He threw just 46 of his 83 pitches for strikes before being lifted in the third inning with runners on first and second, but long reliever Mike Wright was able to prevent any further damage being added to Miley's ledger. The veteran hurler has been alternating solid starts with bad ones over the last few weeks, but he could have trouble keeping that pattern going Monday on the road against a White Sox team that leads the league in wOBA against left-handers at .357.
Jun 2 2017Miley (2-3) pitched seven innings of one-run ball Thursday, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out three to capture the win against Boston. The left-hander pitched into the seventh inning in just two of his first eight starts in 2017. Miley's now accomplished that in two of his last three outings. Furthermore, the veteran has begun slowly chipping away at his career-worst walk rate (12.2). Even with the large number of free passes being handed out, Miley will take a career-best 2.82 ERA into his next start Wednesday against Pittsburgh.
Jun 1 2017Miley fail to win any of his five May starts, posting a 3.97 ERA and a brutal 13:12 K:BB over 22.2 innings. The southpaw's numbers took a big hit compared to his April marks. In the campaign's opening month, opposing hitters managed a paltry .185 BAA, but they tagged Miley for a .313 average in May. Furthermore, his strikeout rate dropped from 29.7 to 12.0 percent once the calendar flipped. Even so, the 30-year-old's 3.02 ERA and 8.6 K/9 through 10 games are career-best marks. Then again, Miley's 85.1 percent strand rate is significantly higher than his career 71.9 percent mark, and his 4.78 FIP is his worst since becoming a full-time starter in 2012.
May 28 2017Miley (1-3) allowed four runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out just two batters through five innings during Saturday's loss to Houston. With Houston sporting the best record in the majors, this was a daunting start for Miley, and it was also just the third time all season that he's allowed more than two runs in an outing. He currently sports an impressive 3.02 ERA and 8.6 K/9, but his 1.51 WHIP and 4.78 FIP suggest there are likely rougher times ahead. Miley lines up for another tall task against Boston in his next start.
May 22 2017Miley (1-2) was the tough-luck loser after allowing just three unearned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out three Blue Jays over seven innings Sunday.Baltimore committed a season-high three errors, including second baseman Jonathan Schoop's costly first-inning miscue that led to a three-run homer. Through nine starts, Miley owns a career-best 2.59 ERA and 9.1 K/9. That's been offset by a career-worst 5.2 BB/9, but overall it's been a successful start to 2017 for the left-hander. He'll toe the rubber for his next start Saturday against Houston.
May 17 2017Miley allowed four earned runs on eight hits and four walks through five innings in a win over Detroit Tuesday. He struck out three and received a no-decision.Much like last week's outing, Miley labored to get through five innings, throwing 109 pitches; the four walks didn't help matters. He now has 27 walks through just eight starts, a number which definitely isn't in line with his 3.02 ERA on the season. The strikeout stuff is where his real fantasy value has come into play this season (9.9 K/9), but he didn't have it Tuesday. He'll take the mound again on Sunday at home against Toronto.
May 17 2017Miley allowed four earned runs on eight hits and four walks in a win over Detroit Tuesday. May 10 2017Miley held the Nationals to two runs over five innings Wednesday, but it took him 119 pitches to do it. He struck out five, walked four and allowed five hits.Miley's been one of this season's most bizarre fantasy arms, as he owns a stunning 2.45 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 36.2 innings, but he's also walked 23 batters. His starts have vacillated between utter dominance and surprising effectiveness, but Miley's due for some regression: his strand rate is high at 87.9 percent, while his FIP and xFIP are both more than a full run higher than his ERA. We've never seen him strike batters out at this sort of pace before, though, so that trend bears watching.
May 7 2017Miley (leg) is in line to make his next scheduled start Wednesday against the Nationals, Rich Dubroff of PressBoxonline.com reports.Miley was struck with back-to-back line drives during Friday's start, and although neither was thought to have done any serious damage, there were some lingering question marks about his availability for his next turn in the rotation. Even though the start will likely go on as planned, it's a poor fantasy matchup against a strong pitcher in Strasburg, who has the league's best offense behind him.
May 5 2017Miley was forced to leave Friday's game after he was hit by consecutive line drives from White Sox batters, Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reports.Miley stayed in after a Jose Abreu shot caromed off his arm, but manager Buck Showalter didn't even give Miley a chance to try and stay in the game after the very next hitter, Avisail Garcia, nailed him in the leg. Neither injury appeared serious, but we'll have to wait for confirmation after the game before we can be sure about his status for his next start.
May 4 2017Miley -- who owns MLB's third-worst BB/9 at 5.52 -- is working through the growing pains of a major mechanical adjustment meant to, above all, increase his command, SB Nation's Nick Cicere reports. An informal talk with Oriole legend Scotty McGregor during a batting practice session last year led to a discovery. McGregor, a fellow left-hander who spent his entire career (1976-88) with Baltimore, noticed that Miley was rushing through many steps in the pitching process. "The talk I had with him in the outfield last year kind of stuck with me," said Miley. "I was kind of working too hard throughout games and trying to do too much." Although the 30-year-old's current walk rate is atrocious, Miley noted that he is, to an extent, trying to work off the plate more than ever before. He's changing his mentality and looking to get hitters to chase pitches out of the zone. "It sounds kind of crazy, but my misses were killing me last year, I was missing over the plate. Now, my misses are off the plate." That's not to say Miley finds his 2.0 K/BB acceptable, but he does understand it's part of the learning curve. Even though his lack of control can hurt owners, the starter has offset the damage by posting a career-high 11.0 K/9 through 31 innings thus far. Across the board, Miley's numbers suggest something major is changing in the way he's going about his seventh MLB season.
Apr 30 2017Miley allowed two runs on eight hits and five walks across five innings in a no-decision Sunday against the Yankees. He struck out six.Miley struggled with his command and routinely allowed men on base, but he mitigated the damage by limiting the extra-base hits and inducing a pair of double-plays. Walks have been a real problem for the lefty this season and this display bumped his BB/9 up to a staggaring 5.5. Luckily, he has also produced a stellar K/9 of 11 to help him battle through numerous jams. Miley still owns a 2.32 ERA despite some adventurous outings and will look to tighten things up Friday against the White Sox.
Apr 26 2017Miley will start Sunday in New York, MASN's Roch Kubatko reports. He was not expected to get a second start this week, but the Orioles will take advantage of off days to go with a four-man rotation with the hopes of activating Chris Tillman on May 2. Miley will face Jordan Montgomery and will no longer be in line for two starts next week.
Apr 25 2017Miley (1-1) gave up two runs on four hits and six walks over seven innings in Tuesday's loss to Tampa Bay. He struck out eight.Amazingly, that wasn't even Miley's season-high walk total -- he issued seven in his season debut against the Yankees. Yet in his other two starts, Miley's walked one batter, total. It all adds up to a 2.08 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 32:14 K:BB over 26 innings to start the year. While his ratios are sure to regress, Miley has certainly earned some attention with his sharp increase in strikeouts.
Apr 20 2017Miley struck out 11 over eight superb innings against the Reds on Thursday night, allowing just one run on two hits and a walk, though he didn't receive a decision. It's early, but Miley has been awfully hard to hit, compiling a stunning 24:8 K:BB while allowing only eight base knocks over his first 19 innings. Obviously, there's some BABIP luck at play there, but the advanced stats like this version of Miley; if he keeps striking batters out like he has in his last two starts, he could experience a lot of success. Of course, he's 30 years old and never shown any sign of being this kind of stud pitcher, so don't plunge headlong in fantasy.
Apr 14 2017Miley (1-0) allowed three runs on five hits and no walks while striking out eight Blue Jays in Friday's win. After walking seven batters and showing a complete lack of control against the Yankees five days ago, Miley apparently found his command during the subsequent off days. Friday, the left-hander issued zero free passes while striking out eight or more for the seventh time in his career. There were a few bumps early in the contest against the Jays, but the 30-year-old looked strong overall and gave his owners a reason to be optimistic moving forward. Miley will take the ball next in Cincinnati on Thursday.
Apr 9 2017Miley (illness) tossed five innings of shutout ball with one hit, seven walks and five strikeouts Sunday against the Yankees. He did not factor into the decision.Miley delivered a truly unique start after being activated from the disabled list earlier in the day, routinely escaping trouble despite throwing just 56 percent of his pitches for strikes and allowing a single for the only hit on his ledger. He left with a chance at a victory, but the Yankees took over in the latter stages and wound up with a comfortable win. Walks have always been a part of Miley's game, and results such as this will surely be hard to come by if he continues to miss the strike zone with such regularity. He will need to execute more effectively in his next start Friday against the Blue Jays.
Apr 9 2017Miley (illness) was activated from the 10-day disabled list and will start Sunday's game against the Yankees, Jon Meoli of the Baltimore Sun reports.Coming out of spring training, the Orioles placed Miley on the DL with an upper-respiratory infection, but that was likely just a means to create roster flexibility with the team not requiring a fifth starter until Sunday. Miley was able to toss a simulated game a few days earlier to stay fresh during his time on the DL, so he shouldn't face any limitations with his pitch count Sunday. That being said, Miley won't represent a roster-worthy option outside of deep mixed and AL-only formats after churning out a career-worst 5.37 ERA over 166 innings with the Mariners and Orioles a season ago.
Apr 5 2017Miley (illness) has been cleared to start Sunday's game against the Yankees, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports. This was the expected development after the lefty hurler tossed a simulated game Tuesday, but the Orioles waited to reassess his condition a day later before signing off on him making his season debut. Miley was sidelined for extended action in spring training while battling the flu, but his track record as a capable innings eater never put his status as a member of the rotation in much doubt. The Orioles will officially activate Miley from the disabled list Sunday and demote another player to the minors in a corresponding move.
Apr 4 2017Miley (illness) threw a simulated game Tuesday and is ready to make his season debut Sunday against the Yankees, Peter Schmuck of the Baltimore Sun reports.Davis threw 87 pitches Tuesday and was happy with how he felt after the workout. However, he mentioned that he was still figuring out his control and threw some pitches higher than he would have liked. Miley doesn't expect to have a pitch count for Sunday's outing, as the purpose of Tuesday's workout wasn't for him to prove he was physically able to throw. Rather, it was to give him the chance to pitch for an extended period of time after missing much of the spring with the flu.
Apr 3 2017Miley (illness) is slated to pitch Tuesday and Double-A Bowie and is expected to start for the Orioles on April 9 versus the Yankees, Roch Kubatko of MASN reports.Miley was officially placed on the DL on Tuesday, and he'll head to Double-A for one start in an effort to get his pitch count up. The left-hander had been battling an illness, as well as a shoulder issue, but all indications are that he's recovered. Expect Miley, whose DL date was backdated to March 30, to make his season debut Sunday.
Apr 2 2017Miley (shoulder/illness) has been placed on the 10-day DL retroactive to March 30.Miley was hit on the shoulder with a comebacker earlier in the spring, but the official reason the Orioles are giving for his placement on the DL is an "upper respiratory infection." He'll get the week to recover, and based on his retroactive placement date, the lefty could appear in the rotation as early as April 9.
Mar 30 2017Miley will start the regular season on the disabled list, Roch Kubatko of MASN reports. The left-hander is a bit behind the other pitchers after being hit in the shoulder by a comebacker earlier in the spring and then being sidelined by an illness later. This will allow the Orioles to stash him on the DL until they need him to start on Sunday April 9 and carry 11 relievers until then. Miley is expected to be completely healthy when that day comes around, but for the time being, he'll bide his time on the disabled list.
Mar 25 2017Miley, who was scratched from his last start due to illness, threw on Thursday's off-day and could make his next start in a minor league game, Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com reports.Manager Buck Showalter said the lefty was fatigued toward the end of his throwing session, so maybe Miley isn't quite 100 percent just yet. Either way, it was a positive sign to see the 30-year-old back at work. Miley should have time to squeeze in at least one more Grapefruit League outing to go along with a minor league start before Opening Day.
Mar 21 2017Miley (illness) feels a lot better Tuesday, MASN's Roch Kubatko reports. He was scratched from Monday's start due to an illness, but it sounds like he will be back on the hill very soon. Despite logging a 6.17 ERA in 11 starts for the Orioles last season, Miley is a cinch to start 2017 back in the rotation, especially with Chris Tillman (shoulder) out indefinitely. While he really struggled to prevent runs last season, his 55:15 K:BB and 3.34 xFIP in 54 innings with Baltimore suggests he could rebound somewhat this year.
Mar 20 2017Miley has been scratched from his start on Monday due to an illness, Roch Kubatko of MASN reports. This doesn't seem like anything overly serious, but manager Buck Showalter will clarify Miley's status before Monday's game against the Red Sox. Consider him day-to-day in the meantime.
Mar 14 2017Miley was handed a loss in Tuesday's game against the Rays as he allowed three earned runs over three innings.Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reported that Miley was feeling somewhat sick, but was feeling well enough to pitch. Even if he'd been feeling at his best, seeing Miley put on a subpar showing wouldn't come as much of a surprise. During the 2016 season he threw for a 5.37 ERA and 1.42 WHIP, marking the third consecutive season that he posted marks above 4.30 and 1.35, respectively.
Mar 8 2017Miley -- making his first start since being hit with a line drive that forced him out of Friday's game -- pitched three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out three Blue Jays in Wednesday's Grapefruit League contest.Miley's third start of the spring was far and away his best. He was crushed by the Pirates in his last outing, but bounced back nicely with a near-flawless performance Wednesday. In fairness, it's worth noting that the Jays' lineup didn't have one starting big leaguer penciled in it, but at least Miley did what should be expected under such circumstances. He'll begin the 2017 campaign at the end of the O's rotation, and the veteran will need a strong spring to feel a sense of job security heading into Opening Day.
Mar 3 2017Miley was hit in the shoulder area by a line drive in Friday's Cactus League game and was forced to leave the game, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports. It's a scary situation for Miley, who was immediately escorted to the clubhouse by a trainer. The southpaw is considered a back-end starter this season for Baltimore, despite posting a 6.17 ERA in 11 starts with the O's last season. Monitor the situation going forward, but consider him day-to-day for now.
Mar 3 2017Miley says he is alright after getting hit by a line drive in Friday's game and left only as a precaution, Jon Meoli of the Baltimore Sun reports.Miley says the ball simply grazed his ribs and that he would have stayed in the game had it been the regular season. It's good news for the veteran lefty, who should return to normal pitching activities within the coming days. Miley has been diligently working on his mechanics after a down season in 2016, so expect him to see plenty of spring ball action before the season begins.
Feb 19 2017Miley says he's regained his command and believes a full spring training with the Orioles will allow him to have more success with the team in 2017, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports. After spending half of 2016 searching for a lefty, the O's landed Miley in a trade with the Mariners. He went 2-5 with a 6.17 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in 11 starts with his newest club, but finished the campaign strong. Miley allowed just four runs over his last 18.2 innings while striking out 23 and only issuing two walks. "I didn't have very good command," he said. "My last few starts, I started commanding the baseball a little bit better and the results were more what I wanted. Command's a big thing." The 30-year-old played his first four seasons in Arizona, before moving through three organizations over the past two years. Miley said he feels settled and able to focus now on moving forward with a team that has confidence in him.
Oct 2 2016Miley didn't factor into the decision against the Yankees on Saturday but struck out nine while also giving up three earned runs on nine hits and a walk over six innings. That's back-to-back encouraging outings for the veteran southpaw, whose 2016 has been a veritable rollercoaster. Miley closes out the regular season by surrendering only four earned runs over the 14.2 innings encompassing his last two starts, while mowing down an impressive 20 hitters over that span. Although his 9-13 record and 5.37 ERA this season leave much to be desired, he could play an important role in the postseason if given the opportunity, given his recent performances.
Sep 24 2016Miley (9-13) threw his longest outing since April, pitching 8.2 innings and allowing just one run on seven hits. He also struck out 11 and walked none in the victory against the Diamondbacks on Saturday. The left-hander didn't give up a run in his previous outing either, but taking that out of account, this near complete-game performance came out of nowhere. Before Saturday, Miley was 1-5 with a 7.55 ERA since coming over to Baltimore from Seattle at the trade deadline. He also had just seven strikeouts in his previous 10.1 frames. Miley is scheduled to pitch again next Saturday against the Yankees.
Sep 23 2016Miley (back) will start Saturday's game against the Diamondbacks, MLB.com's Brittany Ghiroli reports. It was unclear earlier in the week if Miley would be able to make a start before leaving the team to be with his expecting wife, but he will indeed take the ball Saturday and then head off to be with his family for a couple days. Part of the reason the Orioles rolled with Miley is that Kevin Gausman (intercostal) needed some extra rest. Miley was strong through four innings (one hit, zero runs) agains the Rays in his last start before leaving with the back issue, but he wasn't asked to turn that lineup over two full times, let alone three times. He remains a risky option Saturday.
Sep 20 2016The Orioles are undecided as to whether Miley (back) will make a start this weekend against the Diamondbacks, CSN Mid-Atlantic's Rich Dubroff reports. He will leave the club after Sunday's game to be with his wife, who is expecting, so he will either start this weekend, or be unavailable to start until later next week. Miley and Yovani Gallardo have been the Orioles' two weak links of late, and the fact that Miley left his last start with a muscle strain in his back may be enough to give Gallardo the edge for the next turn in the fifth spot in the rotation. Miley or Gallardo will have to start Friday, and the other could start Saturday as a sixth starter, or the Orioles could opt to skip whoever doesn't get the ball Friday.
Sep 19 2016Miley (back) is feeling better Monday following his early exit from Sunday's game, Eddie Encina of the Baltimore Sun reports.Miley exited Sunday's game with a strained muscle in his back, but it's apparently nothing serious, as he went through a throwing session Monday afternoon. The left-hander's next start does not appear to be in much jeopardy, but he should still be considered day-to-day until the team officially confirms he's moved past the injury.
Sep 18 2016Updating a previous report, Miley has been diagnosed with a muscle strain in his upper back, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.Miley left Sunday's game with what was originally referred to as cramps, but it now sounds as if the ailment is slightly more serious, as he has been officially diagnosed with a muscle strain. This may put the left-hander's next start in jeopardy, so his status is worth checking up on later this week.
Sep 18 2016Miley left Sunday's game after sustaining an undisclosed injury while warming up before the fifth inning.Miley had pitched four shutout innings, but apparently was injured before the fifth inning and left the game with the club's trainer. Further information regarding his type of injury should be known in the near future as the team examines Miley.
Sep 18 2016Updating a previous report, Miley left Sunday's game due to upper back cramps, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.Miley appeared to tweak something during his warmups prior to the fifth inning, and it now appears to be regular case of cramping. The lefty will be sure to put an emphasis on hydration heading into his next start, which at this time, doesn't appear to be in grave jeopardy.
Sep 18 2016Miley will leave the team at the beginning of October when his wife has their child, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. The impact of Miley's eventual absence will depend on the Orioles making the playoffs. Since joining the Orioles, Miley has posted an 8.41 ERA and 1.87 WHIP over eight games.
Sep 16 2016Miley will start Sunday against the Rays, Eduardo Encina of the Baltimore Sun reports. The lefty is on thin ice after another blowup earlier in the week but he will make at least one more start, Sunday opposite Jake Odorizzi. Miley has dropped 11 of his last 13 decisions overall and his ratios have been downright awful since the trade from Seattle (8.41 ERA, 1.87 WHIP).
Sep 12 2016Miley (8-13) was torched early by the Red Sox on Monday, lasting just 1.1 innings while allowing six runs on eight hits and a walk, taking the loss.10 of the first 12 Red Sox hitters reached base against Miley, and he was removed after just 41 pitches, his shortest outing of the season. It marked Miley's third straight loss, and each outing has been worse than the one before it. Since the beginning of August, Miley has an astronomical 8.41 ERA despite only giving up only six home runs over the eight starts. Having pitched so poorly of late, Miley's spot in the rotation may be in jeopardy moving forward.
Sep 7 2016Miley will probably start Monday against the Red Sox, although his spot in the rotation appears to be in jeopardy, MASN's Roch Kubatko reports.Ubaldo Jimenez appears to have passed Miley in the pecking order, as he will start Saturday and Miley will be pushed back at least three days to Monday's game in Boston. Manager Buck Showalter said Wednesday that nobody is coming out of the rotation yet, even with Chris Tillman returning Sunday, as they will continue to evaluate their options. However, Miley has a 7.15 ERA and 1.68 WHIP in 34 innings since the Orioles acquired him, so he hasn't done himself any favors.
Sep 5 2016Miley (8-12) allowed four runs on five hits and four walks over five innings while striking out four in Sunday's loss to the Yankees.Back in early June, Miley was 6-2 despite an inflated 5.27 ERA. Since then his ERA hasn't gotten any better but his record has caught up to his performance, as he's dropped 10 of his last 12 decisions. Unfortunately for the Orioles they really don't have any better options for their rotation, so the veteran lefty will head back to the mound Saturday for a tough matchup against Miguel Cabrera, J.D. Martinez and the rest of the Tigers' right-handed sluggers in Detroit.
Aug 29 2016Miley (8-12) pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out nine Blue Jays in Monday's loss.Despite the loss, Miley's effort was arguably his most impressive since joining the team at the end of July. Monday marked just his second quality outing in six tries as a member of the O's. Miley matched his season high for strikeouts and surrendered his least amount of hits in an Orioles uniform. The southpaw still owns an ugly 7.14 ERA since being shipped from Seattle, but Miley has shown bits of improvement over his last two starts. He'll make his next start Sunday at Yankee Stadium.
Aug 24 2016Miley (8-10) allowed two runs over five innings in Wednesday's win against the Nationals. He allowed seven hits and one walk while striking out six.Wednesday marked Miley's best outing since debuting with the team in early August, and he was rewarded with his first victory as a member of the Orioles. Unfortunately, the performance can't hide the overall numbers posted by the 29-year-old in recent weeks. Over his last five starts, Miley owns a despicable 8.18 ERA and 2.23 WHIP in 22 innings. Winning two in a row will be a tough task for the righty, as his next start Monday will be against a dangerous Blue Jays lineup.
Aug 20 2016Miley didn't factor into the decision against the Astros on Friday, giving up six earned runs on six hits over 1.2 innings while striking out five. The veteran couldn't get anything going during his brief time on the mound and lasted just 44 pitches before getting the hook. Miley's troubles started from the first batter, as George Springer led off the game with a 404-foot solo shot to right. Matters only got worse in the second, when Tyler White drove in Evan Gattis with a two-bagger and Teoscar followed with a run-scoring single that brought White home. After plunking Springer, Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve finished off Miley with back-to-back RBI doubles that tallied three more runs on his ledger. The 29-year-old now has two losses and a pair of no-decisions over his first four trips to the mound in August and will try to bounce back against the Nationals next Wednesday.
Aug 14 2016Miley was hit hard in Sunday's loss to the Giants, allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks across just 4.1 innings. He struck out one batter.Miley allowed three runs over the first four innings, and he was chased from the game after allowing four men to reach with one out in the fifth, three of whom later came around to score. The results have been poor for Miley over three starts for his new club, as he has a 7.04 ERA, a 1.76 WHIP and an uninspiring 8:5 K:BB ratio since being acquired. He will look to stop the bleeding Saturday against the Astros.
Aug 9 2016Miley (7-10) allowed two runs on six hits and three walks with two strikeouts over six innings in a loss to the Athletics.Miley now has four quality starts in his last five outings but is just 1-4 in those starts. He owns a mediocre 89:37 K:BB and has served up 19 home runs in 21 starts, peripherals that don't suggest he's capable of much improvement, if any, on his current 4.98 ERA. His next start will come Monday in San Francisco.
Aug 4 2016Miley (7-9) gave up four runs on eight hits while striking out five over five innings in Thursday's loss to the Rangers.Acquired from the Mariners at the trade deadline while on a streak of three consecutive quality starts, Miley quickly ended that in his O's debut, letting the Rangers score early and often against him. Baltimore's offense may help Miley earn some more wins down the stretch, but don't expect much (if any) improvement on his ugly ratios. There aren't many formats where a guy with a 5.08 ERA and 1.36 WHIP can be rolled out without major reservations.
Aug 2 2016Miley will make his debut for the Orioles on Thursday against the Rangers, the Baltimore Sun's Eduardo Encina reports. He was either going to start Thursday or Friday, and the Orioles will opt to give him the ball on normal rest against a loaded Rangers lineup. Seattle gets a little oversold as a pitcher's park, but it's undoubtedly a better place to pitch than Baltimore. Of course, he had a 4.46 ERA pitching with the Red Sox last year, which is a step up from his 4.98 ERA this season with Seattle prior to Sunday's trade. He should be owned in AL-only leagues, but in most mixers he is a spot-start candidate only.
Jul 31 2016Miley has been acquired by the Orioles, Jon Heyman of Fanrag Sports reports. The lefty owns a rough 4.98 ERA over 19 starts but is working on a streak of three consecutive quality starts and struck out a season-high nine batters his last time out Saturday against the Cubs. The Orioles' entire rotation is composed of right-handed pitchers right now, so Miley gives them a valuable option to put into their rotation. Miley will likely slot into Ubaldo Jimenez's old rotation slot, as he owns a brutal 7.06 ERA and 1.95 WHIP over 18 starts in 2016. The Mariners acquired minor league starter Ariel Miranda in exchange for Miley.
Jul 30 2016Miley (7-8) notched nine strikeouts while firing seven innings of one-hit, one-run ball in Saturday's 4-1 victory over the Cubs. He also issued one walk. The veteran lefty was masterful in outdueling Cubs ace Jake Arrieta, throwing 65 of 92 pitches for strikes while inducing 12 swings-and-misses. Miley has three straight quality starts and four in his last five trips to the mound, yet Saturday's win was the only victory he's managed over that span. The nine strikeouts were also a season high, while the win put an end to a six-start losing streak. Miley will look to even his record at 8-8 when he takes on the Red Sox next Thursday.
Jul 24 2016Miley (6-8) allowed two runs on four hits and two walks over six innings Sunday while striking out four in a 2-0 loss to the Blue Jays.He really made only one mistake all game, but unfortunately Edwin Encarnacion deposited it in the center field seats. It was Miley's third quality start in four July outings, but his ERA on the month is still a pedestrian 4.07. It won't get any easier for Miley his next time out either, as he'll face Jake Arrieta and the Cubs in Wrigley Field on Saturday.
Jul 19 2016Miley (6-7) allowed three runs on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts over 6.1 innings in a loss Tuesday to the White Sox.Miley has now taken five straight losses even though two of his past three starts have been quality starts. Still, it's hard to say Miley deserved much better Tuesday night -- he gave up a pair of home runs, and considering he allowed nine baserunners, things could have been much worse. He hasn't struck out more than four batters since June 12, and his inability to miss bats is a big reason why his ERA sits at 5.36.
Jul 10 2016Miley gave up four runs on 10 hits and two walks over 5.1 innings in Saturday's 5-3 loss to the Royals. He struck out four.Miley gave up three doubles, all in a three-run second inning. The Mariners have few options because of injuries, otherwise Miley's spot in the rotation might be in jeopardy. He's allowed at least four runs in five of his last eight starts and nine of 16 this season.
Jul 5 2016Miley allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks in 6.2 innings Monday at Houston. He struck out two.Miley got better results than he has recently, as he had gone more than five innings once in his previous five starts. But he dodged a major bullet in the first inning when only one run scored after he loaded the bases on a double, single and walk. All three outs were hit on the screws, and he was fortunate to escape. If Wade LeBlanc continues to pitch well, there's a chance Miley is bounced from the rotation when Felix Hernandez is ready to return after the All-Star break.
Jun 30 2016Miley (6-4) allowed five runs on seven hits with no walks and one strikeout over four innings during Wednesday's 8-1 loss to the Pirates.Miley only threw 74 pitches (48 for strikes) in his first start back from dealing with shoulder inflammation that landed him on the DL. He'll look to go deeper into his next scheduled start Monday at Houston.
Jun 29 2016Miley (shoulder) was activated from the disabled list prior to his start Wednesday against Pittsburgh.Miley was placed on the 15-day DL on June 17 after injuring his shoulder during his June 12 start. He made one rehab start with short-season Everett, pitching four perfect innings while adding seven strikeouts. Prior to his injury, Miley had been struggling in his previous few starts but the Mariners are hopeful that his time off will give him a chance to regroup. On the year he has posted a 5.28 ERA with a 1.38 WHIP during 76.2 innings of work.
Jun 24 2016Miley (shoulder) is on track to rejoin the Mariners' rotation next Wednesday, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN reports.Miley is set to make a rehab start with short-season Everett on Friday, and it appears that will be the only minor league appearance he will make barring any setbacks during Friday's outing. If everything goes as planned, Miley will face off against the Pirates at Safeco Field in his first start after coming off the disabled list.
Jun 19 2016Manager Scott Servais said Miley (shoulder) is no longer dealing with inflammation, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports.Miley landed on the DL on Friday with a left shoulder impingement, but the fact that his inflammation has already come to pass suggests that he'll be on track to return in the 15-day minimum. The left-hander owns a 5.28 ERA and 1.38 WHIP over 76.2 innings on the season and should be able to reclaim a spot in the rotation upon returning, though he could be at risk of losing his spot once Felix Hernandez (calf) returns, likely around the All-Star break.
Jun 17 2016Miley was placed on the 15-day DL on Friday with a left shoulder impingement. It is unclear how serious the injury is, but Miley was likely in danger of losing his spot in the rotation at some point in the near future anyway, as he has a career-worst 5.28 ERA, and his 4.85 FIP is his worst mark since 2011. Miley was scheduled to start Saturday's game against the Red Sox and Adrian Sampson, who is with the team Friday, is expected to step into the rotation for the time being.
Jun 12 2016Miley allowed three runs on four hits and three walks across just five innings in Sunday's loss to the Rangers. He struck out six.The left-hander cruised into the fourth inning, but the Rangers struck quickly, plating three runs on a double and a home run that gave them the lead for good. He labored a bit, needing 97 pitches to make it through five frames, but he did throw 60% strikes and allowed just four runners past first base. Miley has been rather inconsistent this season, as his 5.28 ERA will reflect, and things will not get any easier, as he will face the Red Sox on the road Saturday in his next start.
Jun 7 2016Miley (6-2) threw seven shutout innings, allowed just four hits and two walks, and struck out three in a win Tuesday over Cleveland.Miley had allowed 14 runs in 8.2 innings over his past two starts and desperately needed a bounceback game like this one. Still, Miley has three shutout outings this year -- he threw a complete game shutout against the Royals against Kansas City on April 30 and threw six scoreless innings against Baltimore on May 17. None of those starts started a hot streak for Miley, and he has been too inconsistent to believe this will finally be the one that rights the ship. Despite his flashes of brilliance, Miley has a 5.27 ERA.
Jun 3 2016Miley gave up nine runs on 12 hits and two walks while striking out two over 4.2 innings against the Padres on Thursday. He did not factor in the decision. The Mariners rallied from down 12-2 to take Miley off the hook and win 16-13, but that doesn't change the fact that Miley was awful in this one. He has just three quality starts in 11 turns this season, and his ERA and WHIP now sit at 5.85 and 1.44, respectively. The lefty has given up 18 runs in his last three starts (14.2 innings), and at this point, it's hard to justify having him active in any league.
May 23 2016Miley (5-2) got an assist from his offense in Sunday's win over the Reds, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk over six innings while striking out six. He's now won three straight games and five straight decision, but Miley's 4.50 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 41:13 K:BB in 56 innings aren't exactly ace-like numbers, so don't expect him to keep landing in the win column. Then again, his next trip to the mound will come at home Saturday against the lowly Twins, so at least one more win seems within easy reach.
May 17 2016Miley (4-2) threw six shutout innings and allowed just two hits and three walks with a strikeout in Tuesday's win over Baltimore.Miley now has three quality starts in his past four appearances after allowing 18 runs in 23 innings (7.04 ERA) in his first four. Miley owns a strong 35:12 K:BB and can be forgiven for pitching to contact in Monday's game, as the Mariners gave him 10 runs of support. Miley is nearly recovered from the slow start, as Tuesday's effort lowered his ERA to 4.32.
May 11 2016Miley (3-2) surrendered four hits, four earned runs and a walk over six innings in Tuesday's 6-4 victory over the Rays. He struck out six, but gave up three homers as well. The 29-year-old southpaw continues to struggle with keeping the ball in the park, now having surrendered eight homers over his first seven starts of 2016. Veteran Steve Pearce was able to touch up Miley for a pair of solo homers, while Steven Souza got in on the fun with his own bases-empty blast. The six-year veteran gave up only one hit otherwise, a double to Brandon Guyer. He'll be challenged to limit the long-ball damage once again in his next start, as he'll face a potent Orioles lineup in Baltimore next Tuesday.
May 5 2016Miley allowed just two runs over six solid innings in Thursday's win over the Astros, but didn't receive a decision. He gave up five hits and two walks while striking out five. The veteran lefty was a long way from duplicating the shutout he spun in his last game, but it was still a quality outing in his ongoing recovery from the horrors of his first four starts. Unfortunately, it's going to be hard for fantasy owners to rely on consistent production from Miley, as he's shown no sign of improving upon the pitching that led to ERAs in the mid-fours each of the last two seasons.
Apr 12 2016Miley (0-1) was once again roughed up by the Rangers on Tuesday, taking a loss after surrendering six earned runs on 10 hits in six innings despite striking out seven with no walks.Miley hasn't enjoyed facing Texas in his first two starts, carrying a bloated 8.25 ERA despite a stellar 14 strikeouts and no walks. He's always been hittable, but the former Boston and Arizona pitcher is unlikely to keep getting slapped around to this extent if he continues to maintain an elite K/BB ratio. Miley will be relieved to finally face a different foe when he travels to Cleveland next Tuesday.
Apr 6 2016Miley threw six innings, allowing five runs, seven hits and no walks while striking out seven and taking a no-decision in Wednesday's game against the Rangers. After working through a bit of trouble in the second inning, Miley cruised forward through the fifth by retiring nine straight hitters. The wheels came off in the bottom of the sixth when two Rangers led off the inning with singles before Prince Fielder blasted a 449-foot three-run home run. Miley's seven strikeouts and no walks left plenty of room for optimism going forward. The 29-year-old right-hander will take the hill against the Rangers once again in his next start Tuesday.
Mar 28 2016Miley will be the third starter in the rotation this season, the Tacoma News Tribune reports. This was expected, but manager Scott Servais confirmed it Monday. Miley had a quiet spring training, but he had 11 strikeouts to three walks in 16 innings. He's an innings-eater, pitching at least 190 innings the last four years. If he does that again, the Mariners will be pleased.
Mar 14 2016Miley gave up three runs in his second spring start, all in the second inning, striking out one and walking none in three innings.Miley was perfect in the first and third innings and said his trouble in the second inning stemmed from working on certain pitches. "I was trying to work on fastballs in, sinkers in, trying to get them to come back," Miley told the Seattle Times. "They were coming back more than I'd like." Miley is slated to be the second or third starter in the rotation this season.
Dec 7 2015Miley was traded to the Mariners on Monday in exchange for Roenis Elias and Carson Smith, Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports.Miley struggled in his lone year in Boston after being traded there last offseason to the tune of a 4.46 ERA, though he got better as the season went on. His strikeout numbers and ratios fell in his first season in the American League, but the 29-year-old should benefit from a move to the pitcher friendly environment of Safeco Field.
Sep 30 2015Miley gave up four runs on nine hits and four walks in five innings against the Yankees on Wednesday. He struck out three. The lefty was long gone by the time this game was decided in 11 innings. Miley appropriately ended yet another unimpressive campaign by giving up at least four runs for the 13th time in 32 outings. He also failed to reach the 200-inning mark after doing so in the last two seasons despite pitching at least six innings in 10 straight outings prior to Wednesday's game.
Sep 24 2015Miley (11-11) gave up four runs on eight hits over 6.1 innings in a loss to the Rays on Thursday. He struck out three and walked one. After three consecutive quality starts, Miley returned to normality in this one, delivering the sort of mediocrity fantasy owners have come to expect from him. He's improved his control a bit this year, but it's come at the cost of strikeouts, and the lefty's high-WHIP ways don't do him any favors. If the Boston rotation stays on schedule, he'll make two more starts this season.
Sep 19 2015Miley allowed two runs on three hits and five walks while striking out seven in 6.2 innings in Saturday's win over the Blue Jays.Miley fought with his control, but kept the game tied before leaving after 6.2 innings. It was his third straight quality start.
Sep 11 2015Miley turned in a quality start allowing three runs on seven hits, he did not walk a batter and struck out five, but came away with a no-decision in the Red Sox' loss to the Rays on Friday night.Miley has pitched much better of late, and was again sharp, throwing 72 of 109 pitches for strikes, but for Boston, what the rotation giveth, the bullpen can giveth away. Miley left in line for a win, but the bullpen coughed up five runs in the eighth to eliminate that possibility.
Sep 11 2015Miley didn't factor into the decision on Friday, striking out five while giving up three runs on seven hits over seven innings in Boston's loss to Tampa Bay.Miley hasn't pitched particularly well this season and he is on pace to post his worst ERA and WHIP since his rookie season. If there is one positive development of note with Miley, however, it is that he's making batters work harder to get on base. After distributing free passes at a rate of 3.53 BB/9 over the first four months of the season, Miley has been downright stingy since Aug. 1 with a 1.13 BB/9 rate. Is it worth picking him up for? No, but it's progress.
Sep 5 2015Miley hurled a complete game Saturday, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out eight in a win over the Phillies.Miley took a perfect game into the fifth inning and was efficient and around the strike zone all day, throwing 79 of his 110 pitches within the zone.
Aug 25 2015Miley fell to 10-10 after allowing five runs on 13 hits and a walk in 6.2 innings Tuesday against the White Sox. He struck out three. This marks the second time this season Miley has served up at least 10 hits and the seventh time he has ran a WHIP of at least 2.000 in a start. Miley had two straight quality starts but hasn't strung three together since June, and it's been that inconsistency that has his ERA up to 4.51. On the bright side, Miley has gone at least six innings in each of his past five starts and is showing his worth as an innings eater.
Aug 20 2015Miley (10-9) was on his game Thursday against the Royals, striking out six while allowing just a single run on six hits over 7.1 innings.Miley's bounced back with consecutive wins after getting blown up twice in a span of three starts, and he didn't walk anyone Thursday for the first time since July 12. Unfortunately, his Jekyll-and-Hyde act is well documented by now, so Miley remains a risky and unpredictable fantasy option. He next faces the White Sox, who scored seven runs against him at the end of July.
Aug 15 2015Miley allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out eight in Saturday's win over the Mariners. This was Miley's first win since July 2.Miley was given a huge lead early and merely needed to stay out of the way. His ERA stands at a career-high 4.58 in what has been an inconsistent season.
Aug 2 2015Miley allowed just two runs with four strikeouts and one walk in 6.2 innings Sunday against the Rays. He did not factor into the decision. The left-hander rebounded nicely from a seven-run shellacking in his last outing, and was in position to win the game before the Boston bullpen blew a late lead. Miley, who has now thrown seven quality starts in his last 10, will take on the Tigers in Detroit next weekend.
Jul 28 2015Miley crashed back to earth Tuesday, allowing seven runs in 5.2 innings against the White Sox.After a five-run first, Miley had settled down before a two-run blast off the bat of Jose Abreu in the sixth. The lefty had allowed just one run total in his last two starts, but the seven-run shellacking has been more representative of his season. Miley will carry a 4.65 ERA and 1.42 WHIP into his start this weekend against the Rays.
Jul 24 2015Miley yielded four hits and one run in six innings Thursday against the Astros. He struck out four and walked five in the no-decision.Miley has had back to back quality starts in which he's allowed a total of one earned run in 13 innings, but he has no wins to show for it. The Red Sox are 0-7 since the All-Star break, as they simply haven't been able to put runs on the board. Miley will give it another go in his next scheduled Tuesday against the White Sox.
Jul 18 2015Miley allowed one hit and two walks while striking out six in seven shutout innings in Friday night's loss to the Angels.Miley was brilliant, taking a perfect game into the sixth inning and didn't give up a hit until the seventh. He threw strikes and pounded the bottom of the strike zone.
Jul 13 2015Miley allowed six runs on seven hits without a walk and struck out two in 5.1 innings in Sunday's loss to the Yankees. This was Miley's worst start in a while, but his first half was marked by inconsistency, from start to start and within games. He finishes up the first half of the season with an 8-8 record and a 4.80 ERA (3.94 FIP).
Jul 7 2015Miley allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out nine in 6.2 innings in Tuesday night's win over the Marlins.Miley pitched well, striking out a season-high number of batters, but tired after six innings (98 pitches) and allowed a couple of runs in the seventh that gave Miami the lead. The Red Sox came back in the bottom of the inning to take the lead, absolving Miley of a potential loss.
Jul 2 2015Miley (8-7) allowed four runs, seven hits and seven walks while striking out two in five innings Thursday against the Blue Jays.Miley won for the third time in four starts and snapped a five-start losing streak against AL East opponents. The left-hander matched a career high with seven walks, but with an eight run cushion in the first, it didn't matter much. Miley will face off against Miami in his next start Wednesday.
Jun 27 2015Miley took the loss Saturday against the Rays, but put in one of his stronger efforts of the year, striking out eight and allowing two runs across 6.1 innings.Blame the loss on Boston's inability to score until the eighth inning and less on Miley. The eight strikeouts ties his season high, while allowing only two runs will bring his ERA down to 4.38, its lowest mark since his season debut. Boston's rotation, and Miley by extension, has drawn some flak, but he's beginning to look at least close to league average.
Jun 21 2015Miley pitched six shutout innings Sunday, giving up five hits and three walks while striking out two in a 13-2 win over Kansas City. He's won two straight starts, giving up a total of two runs over 12.1 innings to lower his season ERA to 4.50.Miley lived dangerously in this one, putting multiple runners on base in three of his six innings, but he made big pitches when the game with still close. This was Miley's seventh quality start of the season.
Jun 16 2015Miley gave up two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out eight over 6.1 innings Tuesday against the Braves. He tied a season high with the eight strikeouts, responding well after he left his last start early and argued with manager John Farrell in the dugout Thursday. Miley received plenty of run support, leaving with a 5-2 lead in the seventh inning. He still sits at a 4.88 ERA on the season and despite Tuesday's effort he has just 50 strikeouts in 72 innings. The southpaw will look to build on his recent success in his next start Sunday in Kansas City.
Jun 11 2015Miley (5-6) allowed five runs and nine hits over four innings Thursday against the Orioles. He struck out three. After finishing the fourth, the left-hander engaged in a heated exchange with manager John Farrell in the dugout. Still screaming, Miley walked into the tunnel with Farrell in pursuit. Miley and Farrell have since settled their differences, and Miley will take the mound again Tuesday against the Braves.
Jun 5 2015Miley allowed two runs on six hits, walking one and striking out six over 7.1 innings of a 4-2 win against Oakland on Friday night. After posting a horrible 8.62 ERA in April, Miley (5-5, 4.67 ERA) was cruising through May until stumbling in his last outing against the Rangers. It was encouraging to see him get back on track in this one, and the disappointing Red Sox will hope he can build on it as the season moves forward.
May 31 2015Miley allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits and two walks while striking out two in Saturday night's loss to the Rangers. The left-hander had won three straight starts before losing Saturday.Miley didn't make pitches when he needed to, but he was mostly let down by poor defense and uninspired play from his teammates. As the Red Sox churn the roster, Miley's job appears to be safe, but this was the third time in 10 starts he's failed to pitch past the fourth inning.
May 24 2015Miley allowed one run on four hits and one walk while striking out two in eight innings in Sunday's win over the Angels. Sixty-one of his 97 pitches went for strikes and he threw first-pitch strikes to 16 of 28 batters.Miley, who retired the first 14 batters faced, earned his third straight win and lowered his ERA to 4.47, after finishing April at 8.62. He credits the command of his fastball as a major reason for his turnaround, but throwing first-pitch strikes and getting ahead of hitters has helped, too.
May 20 2015Miley, who had an awful April, has a 3.04 ERA with 19 strikeouts and six walks in four May starts.Miley submitted what may have been his best effort of the season Tuesday night when he struck out seven and painted the corners in a win over Texas. The numbers are still ugly, but he's been competitive in four starts since the calendar turned to May, an encouraging sign for the pitcher whom Boston signed to a contract extension earlier this year.
May 19 2015Miley gave up two runs on seven hits over seven innings in Tuesday's win over Texas.Miley earned walked one and struck out seven in the win. It was a solid performance for Miley, who is just 3-4 with a 5.10 ERA and 1.44 WHIP. He'll get the Twins in Minnesota in his next start.
May 13 2015Miley (2-4) didn't allow a run over 6.2 innings in a win over Oakland on Wednesday despite allowing five hits and four walks with only one strikeout. He pitched out of trouble and got a win, outdueling Oakland ace Sonny Gray, but putting all those runners on base isn't much of a formula for success. Then again, Miley was due for some good luck, as he owned a strikingly low 52.8 percent strand rate coming into the game. Nonetheless, even though the peripherals say that Miley's been a little better than his 5.60 ERA indicates, he's still not much of a fantasy asset outside of very deep formats. He'll draw a home start against the Rangers his next time out.
May 9 2015Miley allowed four runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out eight in Friday night's loss to the Blue Jays. He tossed 104 pitches (64 strikes) and threw first-pitch strikes to 18 of 26 batters faced. That unremarkable performance represents progress for Miley, who was more aggressive to hitters and lowered his ERA to 6.91. Unfortunately, he left the Red Sox in a hole, giving up solo homers in each of the first two innings. He didn't have the benefit of Boston's best lineup with both David Ortiz (suspension) and Hanley Ramirez (shoulder) unavailable, nor is team hitting at this point. The Red Sox featured five guys hitting below .200 and a rookie making his major league debut.
May 3 2015Miley was "much improved" Saturday according to manager John Farrell, the Boston Globe reports. "I thought he did a much better job with keeping the pace that he works at a little bit more under control. He threw a number of breaking balls for strikes and a lot of strikes overall," said Farrell.Miley followed the instructions of his manager, who met with the entire starting staff earlier in the week and laid out a plan to be more aggressive. Sixty-two of Miley's season high 102 pitches were for strikes, and he dispatched 13 of the 27 batters faced in three pitches or fewer. During his early-season struggles, Miley had been falling behind hitters and rushing his pitches. He did a good job of getting early strikes Saturday as well as slowing the game down and gathering himself with runners on base.
May 2 2015Miley turned in a quality start Saturday, allowing three runs on seven hits in seven innings, striking out three. After an awful month of April, Miley kicked off May with his best start of the season so far. His 7.15 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 13:11 K:BB ratio in 22.2 innings still make him all but unrosterable in most formats though, and he's looking at a tough matchup next week at home to a Jays lineup loaded with right-handed power.
Apr 26 2015Miley was rocked in Baltimore on Sunday, giving up seven runs (six earned) on five hits and two walks against the Orioles; he did not strike out a batter. The left-hander has alternated between decent and disastrous outings through his first four starts with the Red Sox and his ERA now sits at a painful 8.62 on the season. Miley will look to right the ship against the Yankees next Saturday.
Apr 22 2015Miley struck out three and walked four while holding the Rays scoreless over 5.2 innings Tuesday night to earn his first win as a member of the Red Sox.The outing wasn't without flaws, as evidenced by the free passes, but it was a big step in the right direction. Miley fared reasonably well his first time out against the Yankees, but was chased in the third inning of his second start of the year against Washington. The Red Sox will give Miley the ball Sunday in Baltimore for his next scheduled start.
Apr 15 2015Miley was knocked out of Wednesday's game early, as he gave up seven runs on five hits and three walks in just 2.1 innings against the Nationals. The Nats got to him for a couple in the first inning, but they really went to work in the third, scoring six runs off the combination of Miley and reliever Anthony Varvaro. Miley's first start of the year went pretty well, but he's had a career-long tendency to intersperse generally solid pitching with horrendous blowups like this one that leave his final line looking a bit too crooked for standard fantasy formats.
Apr 11 2015Miley allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six in 5.1 innings in Boston's win over the Yankees on Friday.Miley cruised through five innings, retiring the first 10 batters faced before tiring in the sixth. Still, he left with a lead, but was prevented from the win when fill-in closer Edward Mujica served up a splitter that caught too much of the plate in the ninth inning. It was a pitch that Chase Headley deposited it into the right field seats to send the game into extra innings.
Apr 1 2015Miley said he'll be making his regular season debut in the second series of the season against the Yankees, the Boston Globe reports. Feb 5 2015Miley and the Red Sox avoided arbitration by agreeing to a three-year, $19.25 million contract Thursday which includes a team option for 2018, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.Miley was due a hefty raise in his first year of arbitration, and would have been the next two years as well, but the Red Sox just went ahead and got him locked up at a more team-friendly average annual rate. The lefty surpassed 200 innings with the Diamondbacks last season for a second straight year, and while the results weren't great, his 3.50 xFIP and strong ratios suggest he's in line for improvement.
Sep 28 2014Miley allowed two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out six in five innings in the Diamondbacks' 5-2 win over the Cardinals on Saturday.Miley recovered well from a six-run outing last week. He's allowed three or fewer runs in nine of 10 appearances. He'll end his season with a 4.34 ERA and an 8-12 record.
Sep 21 2014Miley struggled Sunday, allowing six runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out four in 4.1 innings in the Diamondbacks' 8-3 loss to the Rockies.Miley had allowed five runs in his previous three starts, so it doesn't seem as though he's slumping. The eight hits are the most he's let up since Aug. 21. Still, his ERA for September is a respectable 2.81.
Sep 16 2014Miley allowed one run on seven hits and four strikeouts in seven innings of work in the Diamondbacks' 6-2 win over the Padres on Monday.Miley came back nicely after allowed five hits and four walks in two innings last week. Sep 9 2014Miley could not find the plate Tuesday and was pulled after pitching just two innings, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks, while striking out one in the loss to the Giants.Miley had been pitching well prior to Tuesday's hiccup, as he had allowed nine runs (eight earned) in his previous five starts (spanning 32.2 innings). While his ERA (4.28) and WHIP (1.37) are nothing to write home about, he does have 169 strikeouts (which constitutes a career high) in 185 innings. His next start is scheduled for Monday at home against the Giants.
Sep 2 2014Miley pitched seven solid innings Tuesday against the Padres, allowing just one run on seven hits and two walks, while striking out five in the no-decision.Despite giving up 22 hits and issuing 12 walks in his last three starts (spanning 19.2 innings), Miley has allowed just four runs in that stretch. The crafty lefty has rebounded in general lately, making three straight quality starts since his 10-run disaster on August 5. In terms of ERA and WHIP, Miley has been just serviceable this year, although he's been a pleasant surprise in strikeouts, racking up 157 Ks in 170 innings. He's got a tough matchup in his next turn, taking on the Dodgers at home.
Aug 16 2014Miley struck out nine and walked one while giving up two runs -- one earned -- on four hits over seven innings in a losing effort Saturday.Henderson Alvarez was simply one run better Saturday night, but it was another impressive strikeout performance from the left-hander, who is now carrying a career-high 8.4 K/9 and an xFIP (3.33) more than a run below his current 4.46 ERA.
Aug 11 2014Miley allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out eight in six innings in the Diamondbacks' 5-3 loss to the Rockies on Sunday.Miley rebounded relatively well after allowed 10 earned runs in his last start August 5. Jul 30 2014Miley (7-7) scattered seven hits and four walks Wednesday afternoon against the Reds, but didn't along a single baserunner to cross the plate over 6.2 innings.Miley bounced back from a rough outing against the Phillies his last time out to pick up his third win in his last four tries. He now owns a 2.45 ERA through six July starts, representing his best month so far of 2014. He's set to take on the Royals in his next scheduled start.
Jul 25 2014Miley allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits, walking three and striking out six over five innings of a 9-5 loss to Philadelphia on Friday night.Miley (6-7, 4.34 ERA) had been enjoying a highly productive July, but the Phillie chipped away at him throughout this contest, adding runs in four of the five innings he pitched. He'll try to get back on track against the Reds in Cincinnati next time out.
Jul 20 2014Miley went seven innings, allowing three runs and seven hits, striking out seven with one walk Saturday to earn the win against the Cubs. The Diamondbacks scored 9 runs Saturday, so run support was not an issue. Miley is now 3-0 in his last three starts, and he hasn't lost a game dating back to June 1. In his past ten starts, Miley sports a 73:14 K:BB ratio.
Jul 12 2014Miley struck out four batters over seven scoreless innings in Saturday's 2-0 win over the Giants.Miley scattered four singles and three walks in his third consecutive quality start. Jul 6 2014Miley tossed a very strong 6.2 innings Sunday afternoon, giving up just one run on five hits and a walk while striking out eight in a 3-1 win over the Braves. With this effort, Miley made it back-to-back dominant performances to kick off July. Over 14.2 innings during his last two outings, the Diamondbacks' lefty has surrendered just three earned runs on nine hits while posting an outstanding 18-to-1 K/BB ratio. Miley will be back atop the mound next weekend in San Francisco.
Jul 1 2014Miley gave up two runs on four hits and had 10 strikeouts over eight innings Tuesday against the Pirates. It's been almost two months since Miley has recorded a win, but he certainly pitched well enough to get a win Tuesday, posting a 10:0 K:BB ratio. His 21.4 percent K-rate and 7.6 percent walk rate show that this outing was a bit of an outlier. On the other hand, his 3.48 xFIP heading into play Tuesday points to his 4.61 ERA being a bit misleading. He's might be worth a spot start in deeper leagues Sunday when he faces the free-swinging Braves in Atlanta.
Jun 27 2014Miley will attempt to focus on his approach to hitters the first time through the lineup and look for ways to get more shut-down innings prior to his next start Tuesday against the Pirates, the Arizona Republic reports.Skills wise, Miley has increased his strikeout rate to career-high 8.2 K/9 (21.4% K%) while his walk rate at a nearly identical mark to his 2013 numbers (2.9 BB/9, 7.6% BB%). The big difference has been an increase in home runs (career-high 1.5 HR/9), fueled by a 17.5% HR/FB mark. With a career-high 9.5% swinging-strike rate, Miley needs to avoid making mistakes up in the strike zone, but he may be able to turn things around from the 4.78 ERA he's carried through 17 starts over the course of the second half.
Jun 25 2014Miley recorded a no-decision despite a rough outing Wednesday, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits and two walks over four innings.Miley struck out just three on the night, but was fortunate that his opposition, Justin Masterson, had a nearly identical line to his. The lefty threw just 13 first pitch strikes out of a possible 23, and found the strike zone on 55 of 83 pitches on the night. Miley will look to put the outing behind him in preparation for his next scheduled start Tuesday in Pittsburgh.
Jun 17 2014Miley's next start has been pushed back to Wednesday against the Brewers. The Diamondbacks will simply push Miley back one day, with Mike Bolsinger brought up to oppose right-hander Kyle Lohse on Tuesday. A reason was not provided, but the team is presumably slotting Bolsinger in to compensate for the loss of Bronson Arroyo (elbow).
Jun 12 2014Miley allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings at Houston on Thursday. He struck out eight, and did not record a decision.Miley still hasn't won since May 10, a span of seven starts, but his strikeout rate has increased dramatically during that period. In fact, he's fanned 39 batters in 37.2 innings since his last win. Considering he's not a high-end option, most fantasy owners would probably be willing to trade the wins for strikeouts. He's scheduled to face Milwaukee at home in his next start.
Jun 8 2014Miley was charged with two runs (one earned) on six hits over seven innings against the Braves on Saturday. He struck out five and did not issue a walk.Miley has been challenging hitters more of late, with mixed results. He gave up four home runs over six innings against the Reds on June 1, but he's issued just one walk while fanning 25 in his last three starts (20 innings). While Miley hasn't earned a win in close to a month, the recent spike in strikeouts makes him at least somewhat more intriguing.
May 27 2014Miley certainly pitched well enough to win on Tuesday night, but his offense did not do its part and as a result, Miley was saddled with a no decision in the Diamondbacks 4-3 loss to the Padres. Miley had a quality start (pitching seven innings while allowing three earned runs on eight hits and one walk) while striking out a season-high 11 batters. Miley is slated to face the Reds at home on Sunday in his next start.Miley saw his ERA drop to 4.76 and if he can keep posting impressive strikeout totals, he'll become more valuable in mixed leagues.
May 22 2014Miley took the loss at St. Louis on Thursday, although he made a quality start, allowing three runs and seven hits in 6.2 innings. He issued four walks and struck out three.Miley's ERA sits at 4.85, but he's been chewing up innings, pitching at least six frames in nine of 12 starts this year. He'll face a weak-hitting San Diego lineup in his next start.
May 16 2014Miley gave up four earned runs on seven hits and three walks over six innings as he took his fourth loss on the season facing the Dodgers on Friday night. The long ball hurt Miley in this one, as he gave up homers to Yasiel Puig and Scott Van Slyke in a night where the Diamondbacks' pitcher had a tough time getting ground ball outs. Miley's ERA rises to 4.94 on the year, although his 46:18 K:BB ratio is encouraging.
May 10 2014Miley struck out six and held the White Sox to two runs on four hits over seven innings to earn third win of the season Saturday.Taking advantage of a strike zone that was stretched low against opposing hitters, Miley avoided the free passes and prevented the White Sox from making consistent hard contact. The left-hander's next start is currently lined up for Friday at Chase Field against the Dodgers.
May 4 2014Miley delivered a quality start for the Diamondbacks Sunday, throwing seven innings and allowing three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four.Arizona would go on to lose the game in the bottom of the ninth but it's a nice showing for Miley who was hit hard in his last start against Colorado.
Apr 28 2014Miley was knocked around by the Rockies on Monday, surrendering seven runs on 10 hits and a walk over six innings in an 8-5 loss.Miley only struck out two and gave up a pair of longballs, so there really isn't anything positive to take away. Through seven outings, he owns a 5.36 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 36:17 K:BB ratio, and has given up seven home runs. The good news for fantasy owners is that the lefty's next outing is scheduled for Sunday in San Diego.
Apr 18 2014Miley cashed in a solid outing Friday, allowing just two hits and an earned run, but walking five batters over six innings. He added eight strikeouts on his way to a no-decision.Miley's season-high five walks was a bit concerning, but he was able to make up for it by tying a season-best eight punch-outs. He was able to limit the damage and pitch well enough to deserve a win, but saw his performance matched with a one-run effort by opposing pitcher Zach Greinke. Considering the current struggles of the Diamondbacks' rotation, Miley's strong outing is certainly an encouraging sign for those with hopes of better things to come.
Apr 1 2014Miley emerged victorious Tuesday, allowing four earned runs on six hits and a walk in seven full innings of work as the D-Backs edged the Giants, 5-4.Despite a dreadful start where he was tagged for four earned runs on four hits -- including a 405-foot bomb by Brandon Belt -- all in the first inning, Miley bounced back with six innings of shutout ball en route to his first win of the 2014 campaign. He was also bailed out by his teammates in this one, who chipped away at Giants starter Matt Cain and reliever Juan Gutierrez for five runs before Addison Reed slammed the door in the ninth for the save. Miley owners should be excited to see the show of run support by his offense, as well as his display of resiliency after getting lit up early. However, he may not be so lucky this weekend when he next toes the rubber in the thin air of Coors Field against the Rockies.
Mar 22 2014Miley struck out eight and gave up three runs on three hits over five innings in Saturday's loss to the Dodgers.Getting the nod in the season opener, Miley surrendered a two-run homer to Scott Van Slyke in the fourth inning that stood up as the difference. Miley threw 54 of his 83 pitches for strikes, and recorded five of his seven contact outs on the ground in Saturday's start.
Mar 16 2014Miley will start in place of Patrick Corbin (elbow) in Australia next Saturday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.Corbin underwent an MRI after leaving Saturday's start, which unfortunately revealed damage to the lefty's UCL. The Diamondbacks are seeking a second opinion, but Miley will take Corbin's place in the team's first game of the season against Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers. In three starts against Los Angeles last season, Miley went 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA and 11 strikeouts.
Mar 10 2014Miley has pitched well in his first two starts this spring while allowing just one earned run on eight hits over nine innings. In addition to carrying a 6:2 K:BB, Miley has been getting a lot of outs on the ground (4.00 GO/AO) in Cactus League play. With Archie Bradley knocking on the door for a big league rotation spot, Miley and the D-Backs' other starters will have a shorter leash than in previous seasons, although the left-hander has arguably been the franchise's most consistent starting pitcher over the past two seasons.
Sep 29 2013Miley gave up two runs (one earned) on eight hits over seven innings pitched against Washington. He walked one and struck out two.Miley finishes 2013 at an even 10-10 with a 3.63 ERA. Though he won six less games, Miley gave up 193 hits for the second year in a row, and struck out 145 batters over 195.2 innings, after striking out 144 over 194.2 innings last year. Overall, a very solid, consistent season for Miley, but one leaving fantasy owners, and the Diamondbacks craving better results in 2014.
Sep 24 2013Miley threw six scoreless innings Tuesday against the Padres. He struck out seven and walked just one.The Padres struggled to make solid contact with anything Miley was throwing, managing just four singles (two of which didn't even leave the infield). San Diego did do a good job of working the count, however, forcing Miley out of the game after six innings because he had already thrown 107 pitches. He'll likely start the final game of the season Sunday against the Nationals.
Sep 19 2013Miley didn't have great results in Thursday's start against the Dodgers, allowing three runs, five hits and four walks in just five innings. He struck out three, and did not factor in the decision.Miley wasn't very efficient either, needing 103 pitches to record only 15 outs. He's been inconsistent over his last four starts, mixing two strong outings with a couple of duds. He should make two more starts before the season ends; at San Diego and a home start against Washington.
Sep 14 2013Miley allowed two runs over 6.1 innings and was the winning pitcher Saturday against the Rockies. He gave up six hits while walking one and striking out five. Five of his last six starts have been quality starts, although the Diamondbacks are 2-4 over those six starts. Miley now owns a 10-10 record on the season to tag along with a 3.70 ERA and 135 strikeouts.
Sep 8 2013Miley gave up two earned runs on five hits over seven innings against San Francisco, and did not factor into the decision. He walked two and struck out three in the contest.Miley has pitched much better recently, minus his hiccup in his last start, but couldn't get the run support needed to come away with a win Sunday against the Giants. He'll take on Colorado in his next start.
Sep 3 2013Miley was chased after just 1.2 innings Tuesday against Toronto, allowing five earned runs on eight hits and two walks.Miley had been on a roll, but not much is going right for Arizona these days, as they've now dropped three straight to fall eight games back in the wild card chase. He'll look to bounce back this weekend against San Francisco.
Aug 28 2013Miley (9-9) pitched well, but was still saddled with the loss Wednesday. He tossed seven innings of two-run ball while striking out five against the Padres.Miley has been exceptional since the All-Star break, going 3-2 with a 2.55 ERA over that span. He will look to continue his success when he takes on the Blue Jays next Tuesday.
Aug 19 2013Miley was brilliant across eight innings Sunday, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks to go with eight strikeouts, during the Diamondbacks' extra-inning victory in Pittsburgh.Nevertheless, the outing was all for naught, as the game extended into the 16th, when a two-run double by teammate Adam Eaton plated the eventual winning runs. Miley's line since the break -- 3-1 with a 2.25 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 32:15 K:BB ratio in 40 frames -- is nothing to dismiss and only helps his cause heading into his upcoming start at Philadelphia, who have managed the fourth-worst run total (49) in all of baseball in August.
Aug 12 2013Miley gave up four runs over seven innings and did not factor in to the decision in Monday's 7-6 win over the Orioles.Miley surrendered more than three earned runs for the first time since May 31, but still managed to put together a decent outing once you account for the level of competition. While his K:BB ratio -- 109:50 over 148.2 innings -- remains unimpressive, the young left-hander will take a solid 3.63 ERA into Sunday's start against the Pirates.
Aug 6 2013Miley picked up his ninth win of the season Tuesday, allowing five hits and one earned run in 7.0 innings.Miley has put together a string of strong starts, allowing three runs or fewer in each of his last 12 starts. During that span, he's pitched two shutouts and allowed one run four times. On the season, the 26-year-old sports a 3.56 ERA with 106 strikeouts in 141.2 innings.
Jul 31 2013Miley evened his record at 8-8 after picking up the win against the Rays on Wednesday. He didn't allow the opposition to score a run and struck out eight over 6.1 innings.Miley was effectively wild Wednesday, walking five batters, but only allowing two batters to record a hit against him. He has been dominant during the month of July, posting a 4-1 record to go along with a 1.59 in six starts. Miley's next start comes against these very same Rays next Tuesday.
Jul 26 2013Miley said Friday that his leg is fine is won't prevent him from making his next start, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. There was never really any doubt that Miley would be able to make his next turn, considering he stayed in Thursday's game after being hit by a line drive in the third inning, but he confirmed Friday that the ailment isn't bad enough to warrant skipping a start.
Jul 25 2013Miley earned the win after throwing 7.2 innings and allowing one run on five hits Thursday against the Cubs.Miley withstood being hit by a line drive on the mound in the third to stay in the game. He bounced back from a start against the Giants in which he only lasted four innings. He improved to 7-8 with a 3.86 ERA on the season. His next start is scheduled for Wednesday on the road against the Rays.
Jul 20 2013Miley only lasted four innings against the Giants on Saturday, and he surrendered two runs on four hits in his eighth loss of the season.Miley had already thrown 80 pitches (49 strikes) by the end of the fourth, and manager Kirk Gibson pulled him for a pinch hitter in a scoring situation the top half of the next inning. Miley threw eight innings in each of his past two starts, so his clunker Saturday should not jeopardize his rotation spot.
Jul 11 2013Miley threw eight innings and allowed three runs on eight hits to earn the win over the Brewers on Thursday.Miley recovered from an early deficit that included two home runs to earn his second straight win. He also has thrown eight innings in back-to-back outings and has only allowed four earned runs over his last three starts. It was a promising start for the left-hander heading into the All-Star break.
Jul 6 2013Miley held the Rockies to one run on five hits over eight innings Saturday to earn his fifth win of the season. He was shutting out the Rockies in this one until Carlos Gonzalez hit a solo home run off him in the seventh inning. The home run was also one of the two extra-base hits he allowed in what was his longest start of the season. The win was his first since June 5 even though he had a 2.76 ERA in the intermittent five starts.
Jul 1 2013Miley did not record a decision Monday against the Mets as he pitched 5.2 scoreless innings and allowed six and four walks to go along with seven strikeouts.Miley needed 110 pitches and couldn't even get through six innings, but he still posted a solid strikeout total. It is concerning though as he has walked four batters in two of his last three starts and that he has a 1.45 WHIP this season. It's no coincidence that he only has four wins this season as he'll need to find a way to pitch deeper into games if he wants to come away with more wins.
Jun 26 2013Miley took the loss Wednesday against the Nationals, as he gave up three runs (two earned) on seven hits. He struck out four and walked one.Miley pitched very well in this one, but the Diamondbacks simply were dominated by Jordan Zimmermann all night. A loss of the hard-luck variety it still a loss though, and Miley fell to 4-7 on the year. He'll look to get back into the win column in his next start against the Mets on the road.
Jun 22 2013Miley gave up three runs on five hits and four walks with five strikeouts over just 4.2 innings against the Reds on Friday.Miley had a run of three straight quality starts but just didn't have any of his pitches working for him in this one. He struggled with his command all night and threw 104 pitches (61 strikes) and still couldn't make it out of the fifth inning. He'll look to rebound next week when he faces the Nationals on the road.
Jun 16 2013Miley allowed six runs, one earned, over six innings and was the losing pitcher Saturday against the Padres. He gave up six hits while walking one and striking out four. Although a costly error led to the unearned runs, Miley was still unable to avoid the long ball as he gave up two of them in Saturday's start. Miley has seen his ERA climb from 2.37 at the end of April to 4.64 after Saturday's start, and over that span he has a record of 2-6 (he was 2-0 in the month of April).
Jun 10 2013Miley gave up three runs on nine hits and two walks over six innings in Monday's 5-4 win over the Dodgers. He struck out four batters and took a no-decision.Miley, whose recent performances have ranged from mediocre to awful, was unsurprisingly bested by Clayton Kershaw before closer Brandon League blew it for the Dodgers. Miley's poor strikeout rate (6.52 K/9) raises some concerns, but you weren't expecting much from him in that department anyway. Arguably the bigger issue is that his HR/FB rate from 2012 (6.9 percent) is probably unsustainable, particularly while pitching half his games at Chase Field. While he's done an excellent job of keeping the ball on the ground, Miley has still seen that HR/FB mark jump to 12.5 percent this season after allowing a longball to Mark Ellis on Monday. Despite the negatives, Miley's 4.89 ERA will likely start to drop if he keeps forcing ground balls and avoiding walks (3.03 BB/9). Sunday's start in San Diego should be a nice starting point, although the Padre offense has been surprisingly competent this season for the first time in years.
Jun 5 2013Miley (4-5) picked up the win Wednesday, holding the Cardinals to three runs on 11 hits over 6.2 innings while striking out three.Miley did just enough to get the win on the back of a Paul Goldschmidt grand slam Wednesday. While this was technically a quality start, allowing 12 base runners over 6.2 innings is nothing to celebrate. Still, Wednesday's performance broke a streak of four consecutive losses for Miley and lowered his ERA back under five. He will take on the Dodgers his next time out in Chavez Ravine on Monday.
May 31 2013Miley gave up seven runs on seven hits while striking out seven and walking a pair over seven innings against the Cubs on Friday afternoon.Three home runs -- including a grand slam from Scott Hairston -- ultimately led to Miley's demise in Friday's start, but he was able to salvage the outing by limiting the strain on the Arizona bullpen. Miley's struggles in the first two months of the season could leave him vulnerable to losing his rotation spot once Dan Hudson is ready to return from the disabled list in July. Barring a change before that time, Miley is scheduled to face the Cardinals at Busch Stadium on Wednesday in his next start.
May 26 2013Miley could be the odd man out when Daniel Hudson is eligible to return to the Diamondbacks' starting rotation, the Arizona Republic reports.Miley was torched for seven runs on seven hits in just 3.2 innings in Saturday's loss to the Padres. This was his shortest outing of the season and it couldn't have come at a worse time. Daniel Hudson is set to begin a minor-league rehab assignment by the first week of June and if all goes well he could be activated by the end of the month. At that point, D-Backs management will be face with a very difficult decision. Based on his recent performances, Miley seems like the logical candidate to get sent down to Triple-A. In two out of his last three starts, Miley has given up over six earned runs and lasted less than five innings. Miley needs to have some strong outings going forward if he expects the Diamondbacks to keep him in the rotation when Hudson returns.
May 25 2013Miley allowed seven runs on seven hits over 3.2 innings Saturday to take his fourth loss of the season. The start was Miley's shortest of the season. Much of the trouble came after he was hit by a line drive on his backside, as he subsequently gave up four consecutive hits. It is unclear if he suffered an injury on the play, or if he was just a bit disoriented (or just a bit unlucky). Even if he is completely healthy, it may be wise to avoid his next start (against Texas, in Arlington).
May 20 2013Miley was crisp Sunday, giving up two runs on five hits and one walk, while notching six strikeouts in six innings, but it was not enough in Arizona's 2-1 loss at Miami.Miley surely did his part in the Diamondbacks' attempt to lock down a sweep of the Marlins, as a two-run double with two outs in the sixth served as his primary mistake of the day. After starting the season with quality starts in each of his first four appearances, he boasts just two in his past five nods. He'll take the mound again Saturday versus San Diego, who recorded a season-high nine hits en route to four runs scored in five frames in his outing on May 3.
May 13 2013Miley took a beating in Monday's loss to the Braves, giving up seven runs (six earned) over five innings, while notching just one strikeout. The lone strikeout was accompanied by two walks and two homers, so it isn't like Miley suffered from awful luck. He made a mechanical adjustment in his previous outing and may still be dealing with some issues. Despite all that, Miley holds a respectable 3.75 ERA and 3-2 record. His next outing is scheduled for Sunday in Miami, which should provide a good opportunity to work some things out, if necessary.
May 9 2013Miley, who walked 10 batters in his previous 9.1 innings before Wednesday's start, made an undisclosed mechanical adjustment prior to going without a walk in 7.2 innings against the Dodgers, the Arizona Republic reports.Miley did not reveal the nature of the adjustment, instead suggesting that he simply "quit thinking." In any case, Miley needs to sustain consistent command and control in order maximize his effectiveness given that he doesn't overpower batters with his arsenal (7.1 K/9).
May 8 2013Miley picked up his third win of the season, giving up two runs on seven hits while striking out four over 7.2 innings against the Dodgers on Wednesday.Miley bounced back after turning in a couple of shaky performances. He has rolled over his success from 2012 into the 2013 season, carrying a 2.93 ERA after Wednesday's start. He is walking batters at a higher clip (3.56 BB/9) than he did last year, which is the leading contributor to his xFIP of 4.06. Miley will have to exhibit better control on the mound if he wants to sustain his early season success.
May 4 2013Miley gave up four runs on nine hits and three walks with four strikeouts against the Padres on Friday.Miley seemed to be struggling right from the onset as he walked two and allowed a pair of extra-base hits through the first two innings. He settled down over the next two frames but then got in trouble again in the fifth and was victimized by a two-run shot from Yonder Alonso in the fifth. Miley has now struggled with his command in each of his last two starts and has given up 13 hits and issued 10 walks over his last 9.1 innings. He'll at least get a favorable start against a battered Dodgers lineup next week as he tries to rebound form a pair of rough outings.
Apr 27 2013Miley did not allow a run against the Rockies on Saturday, but seven walks forced him from the game after 4.1 innings. He did not factor into the decision.Miley had allowed seven walks over his first four starts combined, so we would not be too concerned over his lack of control Saturday. He will head to Petco to take on the Padres in his next start, which is a team that entered 21st in the league in taking bases on balls.
Apr 22 2013Miley struck out seven batters and allowed two runs over 6.2 innings in Monday's 5-4 loss to the Giants.Miley hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to put the Diamondbacks ahead 3-2, but the bullpen was unable to shut the door. He has 23 strikeouts and a 2.77 ERA through four starts (26.0 innings) and is scheduled to face the Rockies on Sunday.
Apr 17 2013Miley allowed three runs over 6.2 innings and did not factor in the decision Wednesday against the Yankees. He gave up just four hits while walking three and striking out three. Miley gave the Diamondbacks a quality road start, but the combination of his offense only providing three runs and the Yankees getting a home run in the eighth inning from Travis Hafner were enough to cost the Diamondbacks a win. Miley's ERA on the season now stands at a strong 2.79 to go along with 16 strikeouts and seven walks.
Apr 10 2013Miley struck out five and walked three while giving up two runs on five hits over 6.2 innings for his second win of the season Wednesday. After batting a case of dead arm this spring, Miley is showing no ill-effects from the missed time through his first two starts. He threw 64 of his 104 pitches for strikes in Wednesday's start, while getting seven groundouts against six flyouts. As it currently lines up, Miley should make his next appearance Tuesday against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium.
Apr 6 2013Miley allowed just one run on five hits with one walk and eight strikeouts over six innings against the Brewers on Friday. After a rough spring, Miley turned things around nicely here in his season debut, though he wasn't exactly facing the strongest of Brewers' lineups with Ryan Braun scratched and Aramis Ramirez leaving the game in the fourth. Still, his command was sharp, needing just 89 pitches (62 strikes) to get through the six frames and the strikeout rate was first-class. He'll look to build off this start when he faces the Pirates his next time out.
Apr 1 2013Miley (arm) is expected to start Friday against the Brewers, Jack Magruder of FOXSportsArizona.com reports. After getting through his 94-pitch exhibition outing Saturday without issue, Miley is in line to open the team's three-game series in Milwaukee on Friday.
Mar 30 2013Miley (arm) is on track to start Friday's game against the Brewers, the Arizona Republic reports. There's still a slim chance things could change if he's not feeling right after his final spring tune-up against the Reds on Saturday, but starting Friday would effectively make Miley the D-Backs' No. 4 starter to begin the season.
Mar 27 2013The D-Backs are leaning toward letting Miley (arm) start against the Reds on Saturday, the Arizona Republic reports.By going that route, the D-Backs would eliminate the possibility of retroactively placing Miley on the disabled list. At the very least, he will not be used in the opening series against the Cards as Ian Kennedy, Trevor Cahill and Brandon McCarthy have been lined up as the first three starters.
Mar 25 2013Miley might open the season as the fifth starter after a brief stint on the 15-day DL to begin the season, the Arizona Republic reports.Although he indicated that he felt good after his start Sunday against the Mariners, Miley gave up four runs in 3.1 innings while keeping his fastball mostly in the 89-90 mph range. The D-Backs don't need a fifth starter until April 9, which would ultimately be Miley's expected return date if they choose to go that route. Pat Corbin would likely move into Miley's spot in the rotation in his absence. In order to backdate the DL stint to make him eligible for an April 9 return, Miley would have to pitch in a minor league game Saturday instead of making his scheduled start against the Reds.
Mar 18 2013Miley (dead arm) threw two innings in his return to action during a "B" game Monday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.Piecoro noted that Miley's velocity was mostly in the 89-91 mph range during Monday's appearance, but he touched 93 with his fastball. It's expected that he'll work four innings in his next appearance followed by six frames to wrap up his Cactus League appearances in approximately 10 days. Miley is still on track to serve as the D-Backs' No. 2 starter to open the season.
Mar 15 2013Miley (biceps) threw a bullpen session Friday with no incident, the Arizona Republic reports. As a result of the successful session, Miley will likely receive clearance to pitch in a minor league game Monday. He's in no danger of missing Opening Day and is tentatively penciled in as the team's third or fourth starter.
Mar 14 2013Miley (dead arm) played catch Wednesday and remains on track to start Monday's game against the Dodgers, the Arizona Republic reports. How his arm responds in the next few days will ultimately serve as the final indicator of his availability for Monday's appearance, but Miley's bout with dead arm is not entirely uncommon for pitchers at this point in the spring.
Mar 13 2013Miley (dead arm) is tentatively scheduled to make his next start Monday against the Dodgers, the Arizona Republic reports.Of course, Miley's availability will hinge on how his arm progresses between now and Monday, but the D-Backs are currently suggesting that his ailment is not a serious one.
Mar 11 2013Miley is enduring a "dead arm period," as his left biceps is experiencing tightness, MLB.com's Steve Gilbert reports.Miley claims that the soreness is not a huge concern, but the second-year pitcher may have his next Cactus League start pushed back as a result. Consider him day-to-day in the meantime.
Mar 3 2013Miley gave up three runs on three hits over two innings in his spring debut Saturday. It would take a disastrous spring and a slow start to the regular season for Miley's job to be in jeopardy, as he's pretty firmly entrenched as one of the five members of the rotation with the final spot being the only one up for grabs during spring training.
Feb 21 2013Miley has entered spring training with a firm hold on a rotation spot, and is scheduled for his first Cactus League start March 2, the Arizona Republic reports. The only true competition in the Arizona rotation appears to be for the final spot, as Randall Delgado, Pat Corbin and Tyler Skaggs are all in the mix. Coming off of a season where he finished second in the Rookie of the Year voting to Bryce Harper, Miley is looking to prove skeptics wrong and approach the same level of success he had a season ago, which was driven by a low walk rate and an ability to dominate left-handed hitters.
Sep 27 2012Miley surrendered four runs (three earned) in four innings of work against the Giants on Wednesday.Miley has allowed exactly three earned runs in four of his past six starts, and he gave up five in each of the other two. Some regression was expected, but his 5.90 September ERA is 2.44 runs higher than the highest mark he posted in any other month this season. He's scheduled to face Drew Pomeranz and the Rockies on Monday, in what will be his final start of the year.
Sep 22 2012Miley gave up five runs on 10 hits with no walks and four strikeouts over six innings against the Rockies on Friday.Though he didn't pitch well on Friday, Miley pitched well enough to earn his 16th win of the season. He's had some struggles here in September, going 2-1 with just a 5.76 ERA, but he's still had a successful season here in his first full year. He'll face the Giants in San Francisco his next time out as the Diamondbacks continue their push towards a possible playoff spot. He's made two appearances (one start) against the Giants this season going 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA with five strikeouts to three walks over 11 innings.
Sep 17 2012Miley has given up three or more runs in each of his last four starts, lifting his season ERA from 2.80 to 3.10 during that span.Even with the backslide in September (5.21 ERA, 1.63 WHIP), Miley is having an excellent rookie campaign and should be a part of the D-Backs' rotation when the 2013 season begins. Miley continues to demonstrate very good control (34 walks in 177 innings) thanks to an improved ability to attack opposing hitters on the mound this season.
Sep 8 2012Miley allowed five runs over 5.1 innings and was the winning pitcher Saturday against the Padres. He gave up eight hits while walking three and striking out six. A rough day at the office for Miley and yet he was still able to leave work with a win. Opposing starter Casey Kelly struggled a little more than Miley, allowing six runs over 2.1 innings, and the Diamondbacks' bullpen tossed 3.2 scoreless innings to secure the win. The win brings his record to 15-9 on the season to go along with a 3.07 ERA and 123 strikeouts.
Aug 28 2012Miley (14-9) gave up three runs on six hits while striking out five over seven innings Tuesday.Miley got off to a rocky start in this one, burning through 50+ pitches and giving up all three runs in just the first two innings of Tuesday's game. He managed to settle down after that, pitching five scoreless innings and picking up the quality start. He continues to roll, sporting a 2.85 ERA on the year, and will take on the Dodgers this Sunday.
Aug 23 2012Miley tossed eight shutout innings against the Marlins on Wednesday to pick up his 14th win of the season.Miley struck out five batters and only allowed four singles and a walk in this one. Aug 17 2012Miley allowed one run on eight hits while striking out five over six innings of a 3-1 win over Houston on Friday night. It was a solid comeback after a rough start last time out. He didn't walk a batter, and threw 70 of 102 pitches for strikes while running is record to 13-8 and lowering his ERA to a sparkling 2.98 on the season. His next scheduled start should be at home against Miami.
Aug 11 2012Miley struggled through 4.1 innings Saturday against the Nationals, surrendering six runs, four earned, on nine hits. The wheels came off for Miley in the fifth inning, when he allowed five runs to cross the plate. Miley has been one of the best pitchers in the National League this year and should bounce back nicely his next time out.
Aug 6 2012Miley took his seventh loss of the season, as the Diamondbacks fell to the Pirates by a score of 4-0, despite limiting the Pirates to just one unearned run in six innings of work. The Pirate run scored when Chris Young and Willie Bloomquist errors allowed Andrew McCutchen to get to third base on a fourth inning single. Gaby Sanchez grounded out to bring the run home. Miley has a 2.85 ERA and will look for win number 13 when he takes the ball for his next start.
Aug 1 2012Miley threw eight innings of one-run ball Tuesday, scattering three hits and a walk while striking out seven, as the D-Backs' held down the Dodgers.Miley gave up a solo shot to Mark Ellis with one out in the first before settling into a groove for Arizona. Amazingly, since he was inserted into the rotation on April 23, he hasn't issued more than two walks in any of his past 19 starts. Meanwhile, he was a bit up-and-down in July, though he emerged from the month 3-2 with a 3.31 ERA, 1.133 WHIP, and 29:5 K:BB ratio in 32.2 innings. Miley's next nod on the slate arrives early next week at Pittsburgh.
Jul 26 2012Miley had a mediocre outing against the Mets on Thursday, allowing three runs and nine hits over 5.1 innings.Miley gave up two runs in the first inning, and never fully settled down, failing to record a 1-2-3 frame. Miley has been a pleasant surprise for Arizona this season, although he's scuffled a bit lately, recording just one quality start in his last five.
Jul 21 2012Miley held the Astros to one run on four hits over seven innings Saturday to earn his 11th win of the season. The Diamondbacks provided Miley with 12 runs of support Saturday, but he really did not need it. He struck out nine while only walking two over his 107 pitches (68 strikes). Somehow, Miley has figured into the decision for all 16 of his starts.
Jul 13 2012Miley will start Monday against the Reds, Diamondbacks' official Twitter page reports.Miley struggled at the end of the first half, allowing 12 earned runs over just 10.1 innings in losses to the Brewers and Dodgers. The 25-year-old right-hander was one of the biggest surprises of the first half, and fantasy owners are surely hoping he gets back on track.
Jul 6 2012Miley struck out four and walked two while giving up four runs on eight hits over 6.2 innings Friday against the Dodgers. While it was a better performance than his start against Milwaukee on Saturday, Miley struggled again and surrendered a pair of homers while facing the equivalent of a Triple-A lineup Thursday night. Miley heads to Kansas City with a firm hold on a spot in the Arizona rotation, as he's been one of the biggest surprises in the National League this season.
Jul 1 2012Miley was rocked by the Brewers on Saturday, giving up eight runs over 3.2 innings, as the D-Backs lost 10-2.Miley was tagged for eight hits, including two triples and three home runs, to go with a walk and two strikeouts. Consequently, his sparkling ERA spiked from 2.19 to 2.87 in just one evening. Miley would be best served avoiding the Brew Crew, who have forced a 10.24 ERA, 1.966 WHIP, and 4:3 K:BB ratio upon his stat line - all in 9.2 innings. Fortunately, he'll face the Dodgers on Thursday in his upcoming start.
Jun 24 2012Miley (9-3) stymied the Cubs on Sunday, yielding one run on three hits and a walk across eight innings, as the D-Backs wrapped up a three-game series sweep.Miley, who punched up seven strikeouts, retired 20 of the first 21 batters he faced before serving up a solo homer to Alfonso Soriano in the seventh inning. He then allowed a leadoff walk -- the second in his last 149 hitters faced -- along with a double, before escaping the frame with a strikeout, line out, and ground out to diffuse the threat. Miley next takes the mound Saturday against the Brewers, who are the only team to tag him for five runs (three earned) this season.
Jun 19 2012Miley held the Mariners to one run over seven innings Monday, striking out eight without walking anyone. The way Miley is going, it's going to be especially difficult for the Diamondbacks to replace him with Trevor Bauer. The team may have to look elsewhere to create an opening for him.
Jun 14 2012Miley was on the wrong end of a pitching duel Wednesday, striking out a career-high eight in 7.2 innings, but taking the loss as the D-Backs were topped by Matt Harrison and the Rangers.Miley (7-3) had allowed just two hits entering the eighth inning before the Rangers induced a walk, a sacrifice bunt, and finally, an RBI single for the deciding run. Wednesday was the third straight start in which Miley pitched into the eighth inning, but the result is a record of 1-2 with a 2.35 ERA and 17:1 K:BB ratio in 23 total frames. His next start is a friendly one Monday against Seattle.
Jun 7 2012Miley had one of his best starts of the season Wednesday, tossing eight innings of one-run ball. He rung up five in the win over Colorado, which pushed his record to 7-2.Miley continues to pitch well, though his strikeout numbers remain rather low. Regression is to be expected -- his xFIP is rather high, while his BABIP and HR/FB rate are both quite low -- but it appears smart to ride the hot streak (or sell high) for the time being.
Jun 2 2012Miley gave up four runs off six hits with no walks and four strikeouts over 7.1 innings against the Padres on Friday. The four runs are the most Miley has given up in his last five outings and raised his ERA to only a 2.72 mark through eight starts this season. He doesn't miss many bats, but he induces enough ground balls (15 this time around) to get the job done. He'll face the Rockies at home his next time out.
May 26 2012Miley allowed five runs (three earned) over six innings and was the winning pitcher Saturday against the Brewers. He gave up eight hits while walking two and striking out two. All five runs came in the first three innings of the game, but Miley was able to settle down nicely to finish his outing with three scoreless innings. The win brings his record to 6-1 on the season to accompany a terrific ERA of 2.41.
May 20 2012Miley picked up a fifth win with seven shutout innings, allowing just six hits and two walks Sunday against the Royals.Miley has been fantastic as a replacement piece in the Diamondbacks' rotation following Josh Collmenter's demotion to the bullpen and Dan Hudson's injury, with a 2.14 ERA to go with the five wins. He's stranding five of six baserunners right now, however, and as that comes back to earth so will he. But how far? A 3.27 FIP gives reason for optimism, but he gives up loads of contact (7.8% swinging strike rate), and that means home runs will likely be coming too.
May 15 2012Miley earned the win Tuesday against the Dodgers, scattering eight hits over 6.2 innings, allowing just one run.It was a solid performance, but the Dodgers' lineup was depleted, missing Matt Kemp among others -- Justin Sellers, Jerry Sands and Scott Van Slyke were all in the starting lineup. Still, with five strikeouts to just one walk and just the one run allowed, no complaints from the Diamondbacks nor Miley's owners Tuesday night.
May 10 2012Miley turned in a pretty poor performance in Wednesday's loss to the Cards. The lefty went 5.2 innings, gave up three earned runs and struck out just three batters, but worst of all he gave up 10 hits.Miley isn't in control of his spot in the starting rotation, and with more starts such as this one, he could be bounced when Daniel Hudson returns to the mound for the D-Backs.
May 4 2012Miley allowed four runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out four over six innings and was left with a no decision Friday night. One bad inning, the fourth, when the Mets scored all four of their runs was the only blemish on an otherwise solid performance. He'll take a 2.33 ERA into his next start at home against St. Louis.
Apr 29 2012Miley was excellent Sunday against Miami, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning and allowing just one run over 6.1 innings of work.Miley walked just two batters while striking out six. At this rate, he should be able to hold on to a spot in the Diamondbacks' rotation, at least until Dan Hudson returns and perhaps beyond.
Apr 25 2012Miley's next turn in the rotation has not been confirmed, the Arizona Republic reports. He lines up to start Sunday against the Marlins, while the D-Backs haven't made any other roster moves to suggest that Miley will miss out on the opportunity for another start. Left-hander Mike Zagurski was called up from Reno to replace the struggling Joe Paterson on Tuesday, so Miley should get the nod against Miami barring word from manager Kirk Gibson indicating otherwise.
Apr 24 2012Miley threw six shutout innings Monday to beat the Phillies, striking out seven while allowing two hits and a walk.Miley was the better of the two fill-in starters going on Monday, as the Phillies' Kyle Kendrick got torched. His performance allows the Diamondbacks to buy some time before they decide when/whether to call up one of their elite prospects.
Apr 22 2012Miley will get the start for the Diamondbacks on Monday against Philadelphia, Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com reports. That leaves Trevor Bauer, Patrick Corbin and Tyler Skaggs still waiting for a callup. Miley has been relatively effective out of the bullpen, however, with a 3.12 ERA, so the Diamondbacks will wait on their stable of young guns for the time being.
Apr 21 2012Miley could replace Daniel Hudson (shoulder) in the rotation depending on his usage out of the pen this weekend, Fox Sports Arizona reports.Miley has posted a 3.12 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and 2:4 K:BB ratio through 8.2 innings out of the pen this season. He'd serve as a stopgap for the Diamondbacks so that they wouldn't have to call up one of their top prospects for a limited look.
Apr 16 2012Miley has tossed seven scoreless innings in two appearances as the D-Backs' long reliever this season. His ability to chew up innings effectively in relief has prevented the rest of the Arizona bullpen from getting overused during the early weeks of the regular season. Miley has a 1:3 K:BB in those seven frames, but has allowed just two hits thus far and appears to be winning the confidence of manager Kirk Gibson.
Sep 22 2011Miley collected his fourth win Wednesday with five innings of two-run ball. He allowed five hits, walked one, and struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: An unheralded lefty, Miley has allowed two or fewer runs in five of his seven starts. There have been a couple blowups mixed in and his K:BB isn't nearly where you'd like it to be, but there's potential here.
Sep 16 2011Miley gave up two runs off five hits through six innings of work as the Diamondbacks lost to the Padres 2-0 Friday night. he walked three and notched three strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a decent outing for Miley who threw 58 of his 96 pitches for strikes but with no run support to be had, he was saddled with his second loss of the season. He's now posted four quality starts in his last five outings and could be an interesting late round sleeper in drafts in 2012. As for this season, you should take it game by game and next week he gets the Pirates. You won't get great strikeout totals, but he should perform well enough to help your ratios if you're streaming pitchers still.
Aug 30 2011Miley earned his second win of the season in his third start on Tuesday night against the Rockies. He lowered his ERA to 3.94 after he allowed two runs on nine hits and one walk in addition to striking out three in six innings of work. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley has shown an ability to generate swinging strikes in his 16 major league innings. He has an 8.9 percent swinging strike rate and he has a strikeout rate of 6.75 K/9. He has done enough to keep the fifth starter's job for the rest of September and he will probably compete for a spot next season.
Aug 25 2011Miley earned the first win of his career with six shutout innings at Washington on Thursday. He scattered five hits and walked four with four strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley struggled in his MLB debut Saturday when he allowed five runs in just four innings, so this was obviously a nice rebound performance. He'll face Colorado at home in his next start.
Aug 20 2011Miley allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks over four innings against the Braves to take the loss in his MLB debut Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: On a positive note, Miley struck out five in his four innings, which continued his Triple-A trend of striking out more than one per inning. Even with the poor showing, Jason Marquis' injury should permit Miley to stick in the rotation for the time being. His second start comes against a less formidable opponent in the Washington Nationals.
Aug 17 2011Miley has, as expected, received the callup to replace the injured Jason Marquis in Arizona's starting rotation, according to the team's official Twitter feed. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley has really turned things up a level in Triple-A this year, recording over a strikeout per inning and walking fewer than three per nine innings. His ERA of 3.64 and FIP of 2.98 suggest he could be serviceable at the MLB level, particularly if he can keep the ball on the ground.
Jun 6 2008Arizona selected Miley in the supplemental first round of the 2008 draft, from Southeastern Louisiana University. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Miley has a 90+ fastball and very good stuff for a lefty, although his command needs refinement. That kept him out of the first round.
