May 1 2025Atlanta re-signed Chavez to a minor-league deal Thursday, Lindsay Crosby of AthlonSports.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez cleared waivers Tuesday and elected free agency. This is the fourth time since the start of the 2024 season the the right-hander has signed with Atlanta on a minor-league deal. It is also the third time that Atlanta has signed him after being the team that DFA'd him in that span. So, it won't be surprising if the 41-year-old finds his way back onto the 40-man roster.
Apr 4 2025Chavez agreed to a minor-league contract with Atlanta on Friday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After being released by the Rangers on March 21, Chavez signed a minor-league deal with Atlanta just two days later and had his contract selected March 31. He tossed two innings of one-run ball against the Dodgers that day and was designated for assignment the following morning. Chavez is back with Atlanta to serve as organization relief depth.
Apr 3 2025Chavez cleared waivers Thursday and elected free agency. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez was DFA'd by Atlanta after he allowed one run in two innings during his appearance against the Dodgers on Monday. Rather than accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Gwinnett and remaining in the organization that has brought him the majority of his success throughout his career, the 41-year-old will once again explore his options in the open market.
Apr 1 2025Atlanta designated Chavez for assignment Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander inked a minor-league deal with Atlanta last week and had his contract selected from Triple-A Gwinnett on Monday, and he pitched later in the day versus the Dodgers, giving up a run on two hits and two walks over two innings. Chavez had a 3.13 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 55:19 K:BB across 46 appearances for Atlanta last season, but his stay on the big-league roster early this year was brief.
Mar 31 2025Atlanta selected Chavez's contract from Triple-A Gwinnett on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez has seen action with nine different teams over parts of 17 seasons in the big leagues, but Atlanta has been a familiar stop for the 41-year-old. Currently in the midst of his fourth stint in the Atlanta organization, Chavez didn't break camp with the big club but didn't have to wait long for an opening in the bullpen to emerge after right-hander Hector Neris was designated for assignment Monday. Chavez is likely to work in middle relief after he turned in a 3.13 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 55:19 K:BB across 63.1 innings with Atlanta in 2024.
Mar 23 2025Chavez agreed to a minor-league contract with Atlanta on Sunday, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 41-year-old was released by Texas on Friday, and it didn't take long for him to rejoin Atlanta. Chavez has now signed four one-year contracts with the club since 2021 and posted a 2.91 ERA in 172 appearances during that span. He could be included on the Opening Day roster if he showcases himself well in the next couple days, per Mark Bowman of MLB.com.
Mar 21 2025The Rangers released Chavez on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez failed to perform after signing an NRI deal with the Rangers in the offseason, finishing spring training with seven earned runs allowed in 6.2 innings. He'll now presumably look to sign with another organization, though his advanced age and poor recent performance could make it hard to attract interest.
Sep 11 2024Chavez (2-2) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing one hit over three scoreless innings of relief in a 12-0 victory over the Nationals. He struck out three without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 41-year-old righty took the mound to begin the second inning after Reynaldo Lopez (shoulder) was removed from the game. Chavez has been erratic in the second half, posting a 5.28 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 14:5 K:BB through 15.1 innings since the beginning of August, and Chavez's low-leverage, middle-relief role gives him minimal fantasy upside. Should Lopez miss any starts to close out the regular season, Chavez isn't likely to be considered as a rotation replacement, other than as part of a bullpen day.
Jul 30 2024Chavez (1-2) took the loss and was charged with his first blown save of the season Monday against Milwaukee, giving up three runs on two hits and a walk over one inning of relief. He failed to strike out a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 40-year-old righty entered the game in the sixth inning with Atlanta ahead 2-1, but a Willy Adames three-run homer put the Brewers in the lead for good. Chavez has served up eight long balls in 46.1 innings this season, but he's still managed to post a sharp 2.33 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 39:14 K:BB in a lower-leverage role.
Jun 19 2024Chavez has a 1.21 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 24:10 K:BB through 29.2 innings over 23 appearances this season. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 40-year-old right-hander is on his fourth stint with Atlanta during his 17-year career, and Chavez is once again proving to be a valuable piece of the team's bullpen. His low-leverage role limits his fantasy value -- he has zero saves or holds, and his only win came back on March 30 -- but he's worked more than an inning in four of his last seven appearances, helping to keep the team's higher-leverage options fresh.
Mar 28 2024Atlanta selected Chavez's contract from Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez was inked to a minor-league deal earlier this week with the expectation that he would eventually be added to the big-league roster. The veteran reliever should operate in a long relief role with Atlanta.
Mar 25 2024Chavez signed a minor-league contract with Atlanta on Monday that includes an invitation to spring training. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: An erroneous report had Chavez to the Twins on a big-league deal after his release by the White Sox over the weekend, but he will end up back with Atlanta instead. The veteran has enjoyed a great deal of success with the team two of the past three seasons, though he missed most of the second half last year with a shin injury and was left off the NLDS roster. Chavez could replace Jackson Stephens as the long-relief option in the Atlanta bullpen.
Mar 24 2024Chavez agreed Sunday with the Twins on a one-year, major-league deal, John Bonnes of TwinsDaily.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The contract may not be finalized until shortly before Opening Day, but after being released by the White Sox earlier in the weekend, Chavez will end up sticking in the American League Central and will leave spring training as a member of Minnesota's bullpen. The 40-year-old right-hander boasts 607 games of big-league experience and profiles as a low- or medium-leverage arm at this stage of his career, but his presence in the bullpen in the early part of the season will give Minnesota some added depth while it awaits the returns of several relievers from the injured list.
Mar 23 2024The White Sox released Chavez on Saturday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The White Sox signed Chavez to a minor-league contract Feb. 8 and invited the right-hander to compete for a bullpen spot in spring training. The 31-year-old struggled over his seven innings pitched as he allowed nine runs on 12 hits and two walks while striking out eight. Chavez will weigh his options in free agency.
Feb 8 2024Chavez signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox on Thursday and received an invitation to major-league spring training, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 40-year-old Chavez defied Father Time last season in Atlanta, posting a 1.56 ERA and 1.10 WHIP while striking out 39 batters over 34.2 innings. However, a microfracture in his left shin forced him to miss three months of the regular season. Because of his age and injury history, the White Sox will play it safe by giving Chavez a minor-league deal, but the right-hander should easily secure a spot in Chicago's weak bullpen if his performance in the spring resembles anything close to last season.
Oct 6 2023Chavez was informed Friday that he will not be on Atlanta's roster for the NLDS, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez returned in mid-September after missing three months because of a microfracture in his left shin, but the veteran reliever isn't quite at full strength leading into Atlanta's best-of-five NLDS matchup against the Phillies. Chavez will continue to work out on the side and could be reconsidered for a bullpen spot if the NL East champs advance to the NLCS.
Sep 19 2023Atlanta activated Chavez (shin) from the 60-day injured list Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez has finally been cleared to return to major-league action following a three-month absence to heal a microfracture in his left shin. The veteran reliever was sporting a 1.55 ERA and 36:9 K:BB through 29 innings prior to the injury and tallied six strikeouts over 3.1 scoreless frames during a three-appearance rehab stint with Triple-A Gwinnett.
Sep 12 2023Chavez (shin) is set to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Gwinnett. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez has been on the shelf since mid-June due to a microfracture in his left shin, but he's thrown several rounds of live batting practice without issue and will now return to live appearances on the farm. The veteran reliever could be an option again for Atlanta's bullpen within the next week if all goes well during his minor-league rehab stint.
Sep 8 2023Chavez (shin) threw another round of live batting practice Friday, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: That could be the final step before he is cleared to begin a minor-league rehab assignment. Chavez has been out since mid-June because of a microfracture in his left shin, but he looks poised to return to Atlanta's bullpen for the closing weeks of the regular season. He'd registered a 1.55 ERA and 36:9 KBB in 29 innings prior to the lengthy IL stint.
Aug 21 2023Chavez (shin) said Monday that he threw a live batting practice session without any discomfort, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 40-year-old right-hander has been on the shelf since mid-June with what was initially diagnosed as a left shin contusion, but after he underwent an MRI once the swelling on his leg subsided, he was revealed to have suffered a microfracture. The updated diagnosis explains why Chavez has been on the mend for nearly two months, but he appears to be nearly healed up from the microfracture. Chavez said he'll first need to prove that he can run at full speed and field his position without issue before getting the green light to head out on a rehab assignment, possibly within the next week or two.
Jul 23 2023Atlanta transferred Chavez (shin) to the 60-day injured list from the 15-day IL on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez's move to the 60-day IL comes as no major surprise after manager Brian Snitker disclosed Saturday that the right-hander was still walking with a limp and was "weeks away" from being activated. The 39-year-old was initially deactivated June 15 due to a left shin contusion and won't be eligible to rejoin the Atlanta bullpen until around mid-August.
Jul 22 2023Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said Saturday that Chavez (shin) is still walking with a slight limp, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez had been gearing up to begin throwing off a mound at last check, but Snitker noted Saturday that the veteran reliever is still probably "weeks away" from returning to full strength. He's been on the shelf since mid-June due to a severe left shin contusion.
Jul 14 2023Chavez (shin) said Friday that he hopes to throw a bullpen session by next week, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez's time on the shelf will extend beyond a month, but if he stays on schedule from here, he thinks he could return to the Atlanta bullpen in about two weeks. The veteran right-hander was pitching brilliantly before suffering the shin contusion on a comebacker (1.55 ERA, 1.03 WHIP). He will pitch important innings for the team down the stretch, but there probably won't be many leftover saves available given the quality of the arms ahead of him.
Jun 30 2023Chavez (shin) threw long-toss in the outfield Friday, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez was shut down for a period after landing on the injured list June 15 due to a left shin contusion, but he can ramp things up now and perhaps make it back to Atlanta's bullpen right around the All-Star break. The veteran reliever had pitched to a terrific 1.55 ERA and 36:9 K:BB in 29 innings prior to the IL stint.
Jun 27 2023Chavez (shin) is making progress, but he won't be ready to come off the injured list when first eligible, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez could come off the injured list this weekend against the Marlins, but the right-hander won't be ready to do so. It's likely Chavez will need a rehab assignment because of his relatively lengthy absence, and he likely won't be back in the Atlanta bullpen until around the All-Star break, at the very earliest.
Jun 15 2023Atlanta placed Chavez on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a left shin contusion. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: X-rays turned up clean for any structural damage after Chavez got struck by a hard-hit comebacker during a relief appearance Wednesday versus the Tigers, but he woke up Thursday in considerable discomfort and will be rested until at least the final day of June. The veteran reliever leaves behind a sharp 1.55 ERA and 36:9 K:BB through 29 innings.
Jun 14 2023Additional tests on Chavez's left leg came back negative Wednesday, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez was removed from Wednesday's game after getting hit by a comebacker, but all tests have confirmed that no significant damage was done. More information regarding a return for Chavez will likely come Thursday, but the veteran reliever is officially listed as day-to-day.
May 20 2023Chavez allowed a hit and a walk while striking out three over 2.1 scoreless innings Saturday versus Seattle. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez was effective as the opener Saturday, and he recorded the most outs of any Atlanta pitcher while throwing 26 of 42 pitches for strikes. The veteran right-hander has seen some high-leverage work this season with a save and eight holds in 22 appearances. He's maintained a 2.21 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 25:6 K:BB through 20.1 innings this season, and he's allowed just two runs (one earned) over 10 innings in May.
May 19 2023Chavez will start Saturday's game against the Mariners, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez will effectively act as an opener in what will be a bullpen day for Atlanta on Saturday against Seattle. The veteran right-hander will not go deep enough to qualify for a win and he shouldn't be streamed for fantasy purposes.
Apr 5 2023Chavez recorded the final out of Wednesday's 5-2 win over the Cardinals to pick up his first save of the season. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A.J. Minter had pitched in the first two games of the series while Joe Jimenez has thrown 16 pitches the night before and may not be ready to work back-to-back days after offseason back surgery, so when Collin McHugh allowed a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to create a save situation, it was Chavez who got the call to close things out. It's the 39-year-old right-hander's first save since 2019, and while he's capable of serving in a variety of roles in the Atlanta bullpen, he's unlikely to see consistent high-leverage work. Through four appearances this season, Chavez holds a 0.00 ERA over 3.2 innings with a hold and a 3:0 K:BB in addition to Wednesday's save.
Mar 30 2023Chavez had his contract selected by Atlanta on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez re-signed with Atlanta on a minor-league deal in November, and he grabbed a spot on the Opening Day roster after giving up four earned runs with a 10:2 K:BB across 8.1 innings during spring training. The veteran right-hander had a 3.76 ERA in 69.1 frames last year and should fill a middle-relief role out of the bullpen in 2023.
Aug 30 2022Atlanta claimed Chavez off waivers from the Angels on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez will begin his fourth stint with Atlanta and his second of the season, after he was previously dealt to the Angels in the Aug. 2 deal for reliever Raisel Iglesias. As a 39-year-old right-hander on an expiring deal, Chavez didn't have much long-term appeal for the non-contending Angels, who exposed him to outright waivers over the weekend. The veteran reliever was a key contributor on Atlanta's World Series-winning club in 2021 and has been solid enough in 2022 across three stops, turning in a 3.62 ERA and 1.37 WHIP while striking out 60 batters in 54.2 innings. Chavez is likely to handle a middle-relief role as he returns to Atlanta.
Aug 29 2022Chavez was released by the Angels on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez was dealt from Atlanta to the Angels ahead of the trade deadline in early August, but he posted a 7.59 ERA and 1.78 WHIP in 10.2 innings over 11 relief appearances with his new team. The 39-year-old displayed some potential earlier in the year, so the veteran will be free to seek out other opportunities during the final month of the 2022 campaign.
Aug 6 2022Chavez (2-1) gave up three runs on three hits and one walk while striking out one in one inning Friday against the Mariners. He picked up a win while also being charged with a blown save. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Angels ended up winning in 10 innings, with Jimmy Herget getting the save. Ryan Tepera wasn't available, and while Chavez was used in the initial save situation, it seems unlikely that he will get the next save opportunity, given his struggles in this first chance.
Aug 2 2022Chavez and Tucker Davidson were traded from Atlanta to the Angels on Tuesday in exchange for Raisel Iglesias, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez's role in the deal is presumably to offset some of Iglesias' contract, as the Angels don't have much use for a 38-year-old reliever on an expiring contract in the final two months of a lost season. The veteran righty could potentially find himself with sudden fantasy relevance, however, as his 2.66 ERA and career-best 27.2 percent strikeout rate make him one of the best relievers in a bullpen that's just lost its closer in Iglesias.
Jun 27 2022Chavez walked one and struck out one in one-third of an inning Sunday to record his third hold of the season in an extra-innings loss to the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Entering the game with two outs in the seventh inning and a runner on first base, Chavez walked Trayce Thompson before fanning Trea Turner. The right-hander appears to have moved into a higher-leverage role in the Atlanta bullpen, as all three of his holds have come in his last four appearances -- part of a 10-game scoreless streak that has seen Chavez post a 0.89 WHIP and 14:4 K:BB over his last 12.1 innings.
May 19 2022Chavez (0-1) took the loss Wednesday as Atlanta fell to the Brewers, giving up two runs (one earned) on one hit while only recording one out. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kenley Jansen and Darren O'Day each blew saves in the ninth and 10th innings as Atlanta couldn't put the game away, and after Chavez got the final out of the 10th, he completed the bullpen collapse by serving up a leadoff blast to Keston Hiura in the bottom of the 11th. Chavez remains in a low-leverage role and has yet to record a win, save or hold through 11 appearances, with his 4.40 ERA and 1.47 WHIP offering little fantasy value.
May 6 2022Chavez is starting Friday's game against the Brewers, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez's first eight appearances of the season have come as a reliever, and he's posted a 2.84 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 13:2 K:BB in 12.2 innings. However, he'll draw the start in Friday's series opener against Milwaukee after Bryce Elder and Kyle Muller were recently demoted. The right-hander made just four starts in 2021, so it's possible he moves back to the bullpen following Friday's outing.
Apr 20 2022Chavez was traded from the Cubs to Atlanta on Wednesday in exchange for Sean Newcomb and cash considerations. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez signed a split deal with Chicago in March but will now return to Atlanta, where he spent the 2021 campaign. He had a 2.14 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 36:11 K:BB over 33.2 innings for the reigning champs last year.
Apr 2 2022Chavez's contract was selected by the Cubs on Saturday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 38-year-old looked like he might be toast following the 2020 season, as he struggled to a 6.88 ERA that year while posting a 16.9 percent strikeout rate. He bounced back in a big way last season, however, posting a career-best 2.14 ERA in 33.2 innings for Atlanta as his strikeout rate jumped all the way up to a career-high 27.1 percent.
Mar 23 2022Chavez allowed an unearned run across two innings to pick up the win in Wednesday's Cactus League game against the Athletics. He gave up two hits and struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran reliever is in camp as a non-roster invitee, though he seems pretty likely to earn a bullpen role. Chavez pitched for the Cubs along with the Rangers back in 2018, when he posted a strong 2.55 ERA across 95.1 innings. He was good with Atlanta last year as well, registering a 2.14 ERA and 1.01 WHIP while striking out 36 batters across 33.2 innings. Chavez should slot in somewhere in front of closer Rowan Wick and could see high-leverage work this season.
Mar 13 2022Chavez agreed to a contract Sunday with the Cubs, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. He will join the team on a minor-league/split contract, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though the 38-year-old right-hander will be attending Cubs camp as a non-roster invitee, he's not only a good bet to make the Opening Day roster, but to also fill a prominent role out of the bullpen right away. Chavez proved to be a quality middle-inning option for the World Series champion Atlanta squad in 2021, submitting a 2.14 ERA and 1.01 WHIP while striking out 36 over 33.2 innings. He'll give a talent-barren Cubs bullpen a setup option for presumptive closer Rowan Wick after Codi Heuer (elbow) recently underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery.
Oct 21 2021Chavez tossed a perfect first inning in Wednesday's win over the Dodgers in Game 4 of the NLCS. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez stepped in on short notice Wednesday after Huascar Ynoa (shoulder) was scratched, and he required just 11 pitches to get through the first inning. The right-hander still hasn't allowed a run in 4.1 innings across five postseason appearances, and he should be available as a reliever for the remainder of the series following Wednesday's short outing.
Oct 20 2021Chavez will start Game 4 of the NLCS against the Dodgers on Wednesday, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Huascar Ynoa was poised to start Wednesday's bullpen game for Atlanta, but he was a late scratch with shoulder inflammation. Chavez will instead open things up in Game 4, and he has yet to allow an earned run across 3.1 innings this postseason. The 38-year-old is unlikely to pitch much more than an inning before giving way to the likes of Drew Smyly or A.J. Minter, who are more likely to cover multiple frames.
Oct 2 2021Chavez will start Saturday's game against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez will likely serve as an opener in Saturday's matchup since Atlanta plans to utilize its bullpen in the penultimate game of the regular season. The right-hander has recorded a 0.79 ERA and 0.71 WHIP in 11.1 innings across his last 11 appearances.
Sep 25 2021Chavez will start Sunday's game against the Padres, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez will once again serve as an opener with Atlanta employing a bullpen game for the series finale in San Diego. The veteran right-hander has a 2.37 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 34:11 K:BB over 30.1 innings this season, and he's unlikely to pitch much more than an inning Sunday.
Sep 21 2021Atlanta manager Brian Snitker announced that Chavez will serve as the team's opening pitcher in a bullpen game Tuesday in Arizona, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez will be filling the rotation spot that previously belonged to Touki Toussaint, who will be available out of the bullpen Tuesday along with all of Atlanta's other relievers, according to Snitker. In his lone other outing as an opener this season back on June 24 against the Reds, Chavez covered 2.1 innings and gave up two runs while striking out three. He's made only two one-inning appearances over the past week, so Chavez should be able to cover 2-to-3 frames Tuesday before giving way to the bullpen.
Aug 15 2021Chavez (3-2) allowed two runs on three hits and a walk in one inning to earn the win Sunday against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez wasn't particularly sharp in Sunday's outing, as he allowed the Nationals to bring the game within one run in the bottom of the fifth inning. However, he nabbed his third win of 2021 since Atlanta's bullpen tossed four scoreless frames after the right-hander left the game. Chavez has now allowed runs in three of his last four relief appearances, and he's recorded a 12.27 ERA and 3.00 WHIP in 3.2 innings across that span.
Jul 31 2021Chavez (2-2) walked a batter and nothing more in one inning of relief, picking up the win in Saturday's 8-1 victory over the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The journeyman reliever has not allowed an earned run in 10 straight appearances. He has also now garnered wins in two straight outings. The 37-year-old totes a 1.38 ERA into play on Sunday.
Jul 17 2021Chaves (0-2) allowed an unearned run on one hit and a walk while striking out two over an inning as he took the loss against the Rays on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez entered to begin extra innings and ended up allowing an RBI single to Austin Meadows to give the Rays a 7-6 lead. Atlanta was unable to extend or end the game in the bottom half of the frame, setting up Chavez for his second loss of the year. Since debuting for Atlanta on June 24, the 37-year-old owns a 2.08 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 14:3 K:BB over 8.2 innings.
Jun 24 2021Chavez (0-1) allowed two earned runs on two hits and a walk while striking out three across 2.1 innings, taking the loss to the Reds on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez surrendered a pair of doubles that led to a pair of runs scoring against him. It wasn't a terrible performance for it being his first big-league action since 2020, as he pitched around his projected innings total in the bullpen game. The 37-year-old has been successful in the minors this season with a 2.25 ERA through 20 innings in Triple-A. He has little to no fantasy value.
Mar 26 2021Chavez was let go by the Angels on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran joined the team as a non-roster invitee in February but failed to impress this spring. In 4.1 Cactus League innings, he gave up seven runs on nine hits, striking out two and walking three. Now 37 years old and coming off a pair of seasons in which he struggled to a combined 5.21 ERA, it's possible his big-league days are over.
Feb 26 2021Chavez signed a minor-league contract with the Angels that includes an invitation to major-league spring training Friday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander posted a 5.21 ERA and 1.38 WHIP across 95 innings for the Rangers over the past two seasons, but he'll receive a chance to showcase himself in camp with the Angels. Chavez had a 2.55 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 92:17 K:BB over 95.1 innings during 2018 and should be able to earn a roster spot if able to recapture that form.
Sep 6 2020Chavez (toe) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Sunday, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez will take the roster spot of Joely Rodriguez (hamstring), who is done for the season. While Chavez was decent enough last year, he has struggled to an 8.74 ERA and 1.68 WHIP through 12 appearances this season, blowing three leads along the way. The 37-year-old is in the final year of his contract and this may be it for his major-league career.
Aug 24 2020Chavez was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left big toe sprain, retroactive to Aug. 23. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez has struggled during recent appearances and now carries an 8.74 ERA and 1.68 WHIP over 11.1 innings this season as he's blown three saves. It's unclear how the 37-year-old sustained his injury or whether he'll be able to return after spending the minimum amount of time on the injured list.
Aug 21 2020Chavez allowed two runs in two-thirds of an inning and blew his third save of the season in Thursday's 8-7 loss to the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez entered in the bottom of the eighth inning to preserve a 6-5 lead but yielded back-to-back home runs to Ty France and Austin Hedges. It was the sixth time in 11 outings the reliever has allowed runs, and Chavez has given up six long balls in just 10.2 innings. He was once considered an important bullpen piece, but an 8.71 ERA (10.23 FIP) and 5.2 HR/9 should put an end to those thoughts.
Jun 24 2020Chavez (elbow) is expected to be ready for Opening Day, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This is not exactly earth-shattering news -- after all, Chavez was projected for a mid-May return before the shutdown -- but it's nice to get confirmation that he has not experienced any setbacks in recent months. The veteran's overall numbers from last year are ugly, though he was pitching quite well with a 3.30 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in the first half before the elbow issue popped up. He will likely pitch exclusively in relief this season.
Apr 6 2020Chavez (elbow) is starting a throwing program designed to have him pitching off a mound by mid-May, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez was headed for a stint on the injured list before spring training shut down. He made just one appearance during the Cactus League, as the elbow injury has lingered since the end of last season.
Mar 11 2020Chavez (elbow) will open the season on the injured list, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez underwent surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow in September. While he was supposedly at full strength to start camp, he's pitched just once in Cactus League action and evidently needs more time.
Feb 12 2020Chavez (elbow) is at full strength as the Rangers begin spring training, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez had his 2019 season cut short by an elbow impingement that eventually required surgery. It was an issue he dealt with, but he finally made the decision to go under the knife. With experience as both a starter and reliever, Chavez was moved into the rotation at one point during 2019, but he'll throw out of the bullpen in 2020.
Aug 26 2019Chavez (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Monday.
Aug 24 2019Chavez (elbow) will not pitch again this season, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Aug 13 2019Chavez was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday due to a right elbow impingement, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Jul 24 2018Chavez, who struck out all three batters he faced in Tuesday's loss to the Diamondbacks, has pitched four perfect innings with six strikeouts since joining the Cubs Saturday. The Cubs needed a bullpen boost with several relievers dealing with injuries, and Chavez has delivered in his first three appearances since the team acquired him in a trade Thursday. The 34-year-old righty has a solid 3.28 ERA this season and figures to remain a key member of the Chicago relief corps the rest of the way.
Jul 21 2018Chavez is with the Cubs for the team's Saturday doubleheader against the Cardinals, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.Chavez was acquired by the Cubs on Thursday and figures to make his team debut soon in a long-relief role. Prior to arriving in Chicago, the 34-year-old righty had been having a nice season in Texas, tossing 56.1 innings in relief with a 3.51 ERA. With Brandon Morrow, Justin Hancock and Anthony Bass all currently on the disabled list, the Cubs could certainly use a boost from Chavez in their bullpen.
Jul 19 2018Chavez was traded to the Cubs in exchange for Low-A lefty Tyler Thomas on Thursday. The 34-year-old had been having a bounceback season in Texas, tossing 56.1 innings in relief with a 3.51 ERA. He'll likely serve a long-relief role in Chicago, though he's made 70 starts in his career and could be an option for the occasional spot start as well.
Jun 23 2018Chavez struck out one over two scoreless innings and picked up his first save of the season in Friday's 8-1 win over the Twins.Chavez entered the game in the eighth inning with the Rangers ahead, 4-1, presumably to turn the game over to closer Keone Kela for the ninth inning. But before that could happen, Texas put up a four-spot in top of the ninth inning, negating the need for its closer. Chavez has slowly chipped away at an ERA that was above 5.00 as recently as May 9. A 1.65 ERA over his last 27.1 innings has lowered his season ERA to 3.33. He's been the go-to guy when multiple relief innings are needed.
Jun 2 2018Chavez allowed three hits and one walk while striking out four over five scoreless innings of relief in Friday's 6-1 loss to the Angels.Chavez had a bullpen-saving outing Friday when starter Bartolo Colon was chased after three innings. A long-relief role was what the Rangers envisioned for Chavez, who has thrown multiple innings 13 times in 18 outings. After a rough introduction to the season, Chavez has a 2.08 ERA with 22 strikeouts over his last 21.2 innings, spanning 12 outings. If the Rangers decide to make a change in the starting rotation -- Texas starters rank 28th in MLB with a 5.46 ERA -- Chavez, who started 21 games for the Angels in 2017, is an internal option.
May 19 2018Chavez (2-0) tossed 2.2 scoreless innings in relief Friday for a win over the White Sox, giving up three hits while striking out one and walking zero.Chavez entered in the fourth inning to relieve a struggling Matt Moore, and proceeded to shut down the White Sox on 43 pitches (26 strikes) in the multi-inning performance. Chavez has now had back-to-back outings where he's thrown multiple scoreless innings. On April 23, the right-hander's ERA was 6.28, and in eight appearances since then he's brought it down to 4.33. Chavez's ability to go multiple innings make him a decent candidate to pick up occasional decisions.
May 19 2018Chavez (2-0) tossed 2.2 scoreless innings in relief Friday to earn a win over the White Sox. He gave up three hits while striking out one and walking none.Chavez, who entered in the fourth inning to relieve a struggling Matt Moore, proceeded to shut down the White Sox on 43 pitches (26 strikes) in the multi-inning performance. Chavez has now had back-to-back outings where he's thrown multiple scoreless innings. On April 23, the right-hander's ERA was 6.28, and in eight appearances since then he's brought it down to 4.33. Chavez's ability to go multiple innings makes him a decent candidate to pick up occasional decisions.
Mar 21 2018Chavez will be used as a reliever by the Rangers this season, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports.Chavez was competing for a spot in the Rangers' rotation, but it appears that he'll make the team as a reliever instead. The 34-year-old has been primarily a reliever in seven of his 10 major-league seasons, though his career ERA is 4.45 as a starter and 4.96 as a reliever. Chavez would have had little value as a starter, with a high ERA and an unremarkable strikeout rate (20.4 percent for his career), though at least he could have picked up a few wins. His value is even less as a long reliever and there will be little reason to own him in all but the deepest of leagues unless he returns to the rotation.
Mar 18 2018Chavez had retired 18 consecutive batters before he allowed three runs in Saturday's appearance against the Royals.Chavez retired all nine batters faced March 12, then was perfect through three innings Saturday before the Royals got to him in his fourth inning of work. The Rangers are giving him a good, long look this spring, using him as a long reliever and starter. It's a split role they envision for him in the regular season. If manager Jeff Banister follows through on his plan to use a sixth starter at times, Chavez will be considered for that role.
Mar 13 2018Chavez retired all nine batters faced and struck out two over three innings in Monday's start against the Royals. This was Chavez's second spring start and fourth overall appearance. The Rangers signed him Feb. 23 -- nine days after pitchers and catchers reported -- with the idea that Chavez could be a swing pitcher, capable of both starting and relieving. Texas' starting rotation is in flux after Cole Hamels, Doug Fister and Matt Moore. Martin Perez (elbow) is expected to join them when the team feels he's ready. That leaves a fifth starter job and possibly another should manager Jeff Banister stick with the plan to sometimes use a sixth starter. Chavez is in the mix for one of those final two spots along with Bartolo Colon and Mike Minor.
Feb 21 2018Chavez signed a split contract with the Rangers on Wednesday, Jon Heyman of FanRagSports.com reports.Chavez will make $1.5 million if he makes the major-league roster. He spent 2017 with the Angels, struggling to a 5.35 ERA and 1.40 WHIP across 138 innings split between the rotation and bullpen. The 34-year-old should compete for a spot in the Rangers' starting rotation during camp, but given he couldn't hold down a rotation spot with the pitching-starved Angels last season, he could spend the year in the major-league bullpen or as organizational pitching depth in the minors.
Sep 29 2017Chavez was saddled with his 11th loss of the season after giving up three runs on four hits while striking out two over an inning of relief Thursday against the White Sox.Chavez's late-inning implosion squandered what had been a successful bullpen game for the Angels. The 34-year-old had transitioned well to a relief role in August (0.60 ERA over 15 innings), but he reverted to his poor pitching ways in September, posting an ugly 12.46 ERA in nine appearances this month. Chavez will enter free agency this offseason, but he will find it tough to crack any rotation in the majors after failing to make it work for the pitching-starved Halos.
Aug 22 2017Chavez surrendered two hits while striking out six over three scoreless innings in a loss to the Rangers on Monday.Chavez was demoted to a long relief role after struggling mightily (5.43 ERA) as a starter. The 34-year-old has transitioned well to the bullpen, posting a 1.00 ERA and a 13:0 K:BB ratio over nine innings. Chavez's recent run of success could earn him another shot in the rotation should a spot open up due to injury, but a lack of hold and save opportunities in his current role limits his fantasy value.
Aug 2 2017Chavez will shift from the starting rotation to the bullpen, Pedro Moura of the Los Angeles Times reports. The 33-year-old has struggled mightily as a starter this season -- compiling a 5.24 ERA and 86:40 K:BB through 113.1 innings (21 starts) -- so the Angels will move him to the bullpen as rookie Troy Scribner gets a shot in the starting rotation. Chavez spent all of 2016 as a reliever, though he posted an unimpressive 4.43 ERA across 67 innings. He'll provide length out of the bullpen, and with his high ERA and low strikeout rates, he won't carry much fantasy value.
Jul 30 2017Chavez was stuck with a no-decision Sunday against the Blue Jays despite logging five innings while allowing four runs, seven hits and two walks. He also struck out a pair. The three-run third was the only real rough patch for the veteran hurler, as he managed to hold the Blue Jays' bats in check while putting himself in line for the victory. However, he was not able to get the victory after the Angels' bullpen imploded and allowed seven runs in the bottom of the ninth. Chavez did his part by making a serviceable 94-pitch start, although the outing raised his ERA to 5.43. He'll look to move back into the win column in his next start Saturday when the Halos play host to the A's.
Jul 26 2017Chavez surrendered seven runs on five hits and four walks over just 2.1 innings but was able to escape with a no-decision in Tuesday's extra-inning loss to Cleveland. he struck out three. All seven runs scored in a disastrous second inning that featured a grand slam by Bradley Zimmer and a solo shot by Michael Brantley. Chavez has now given up 12 runs and five homers in 13.1 innings over his last three starts, leaving him with a 5.35 ERA and 1.42 WHIP on the year, but his job still seems secure in the Angels' injury-riddled rotation. He'll next take the mound Sunday in Toronto.
Jul 19 2017Chavez tossed a quality start Tuesday, holding the Nationals to two runs on eight hits while striking out five over six innings. He did not factor into the decision. It was the veteran's seventh quality start this season, but just his first in over a month. Despite the solid outing, Chavez continued to be a victim of the long ball (two solo home runs), an issue that has plagued the righty all year (1.9 HR/9). With a 4.88 ERA through 107 innings, the 33-year-old's value is limited to very deep and AL-only formats.
Jul 8 2017Chavez (5-10) allowed three runs in five innings on seven hits and two walks to absorb the loss Saturday against the Rangers. He struck out six.The punchouts rescued an otherwise mediocre line, though they haven't helped make up for his continued mediocre seasonal production. Chavez's full-time starter role has shrunk his K/9 from 8.5 to this year's 7.0, and his 4.99 ERA at the first half's conclusion pegs him as a target for hitter streaming. Still, the Angels likely will rely on him to eat innings to buoy their injury- and disappointment-riddled rotation.
Jul 2 2017Chavez (5-9) held the Mariners to two runs on four hits over five innings, walking two and striking out three in a 5-3 loss Sunday.Chavez labored through in this one, needing 96 pitches (56 strikes) to complete five frames. The veteran hasn't been sharp lately, posting a 4.3 BB/9 and a 6.12 ERA over his previous five starts. The lack of control could be a sign that the 33-year-old is losing steam as we enter the dog days of summer. Chavez was already a marginal fantasy asset with an overall ERA of 4.97, but his recent rough patch makes him hard to trust in almost any format going forward.
Jun 27 2017Chavez (5-8) gave up two runs on two hits and four walks while striking out five over 5.1 innings in Tuesday's loss to the Dodgers.Chavez blanked the Dodgers over the first five innings, and both runs charged to him came around to score after he was pulled from the game. The 33-year-old only threw 54 of his 100 pitches for strikes, but he induced nine swinging strikes and kept the ball in the yard, breaking a streak of 13 consecutive appearances with at least one home run allowed. It was a nice bounce-back effort against a good lineup, but Chavez's propensity for giving up the long ball and declining strikeout rate make him a dicey streaming option in mixed leagues.
Jun 22 2017Chavez allowed five earned runs over 4.0 innings en route to picking up a no-decision Thursday against the Yankees. He allowed seven hits and two walks while adding three strikeouts. The Angels' provided a late spark to take the lead over the Yankees, which saved Chavez from taking his eighth loss of the season. Chavez's ERA now sits at 5.15 and his strikeout rate coming into Thursday's outing sat at a mere 6.72 per nine innings. He's set to start Tuesday against a Dodgers lineup that is remarkably tough on right-handed pitchers.
Jun 17 2017Chavez (5-7) took the loss despite allowing two runs on nine hits over seven innings. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. With the exception of not being able to figure out Lorenzo Cain, who homered and drove in another run off of him, Chavez was very good. The problem was that Royals starter Ian Kennedy was better. However, it was a nice rebound start for Chavez after he allowed six runs over 3.2 innings his last time out.
Jun 11 2017Chavez allowed six runs on four hits and four walks while striking out three batters over 3.2 innings during Sunday's win over Houston. He didn't factor into the decision. The Astros own the league's highest-scoring offense, so Chavez probably shouldn't have been turned to in the first place Sunday. However, it's been a year-long struggle for the 33-year-old righty, as he sports a 5.06 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 6.9 K/9. Those numbers aren't moving the fantasy needle, and Chavez is probably best ignored outside of cavernous settings. A date with the Royals is up next for the veteran.
Jun 7 2017Chavez (5-6) allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out four over 5.2 innings in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Tigers. He held Detroit scoreless for five innings before tiring in the sixth, a pattern that's been common ever since the 33-year-old began taking a regular turn in the rotation a few years ago with Oakland. Chavez gets a tough assignment in his next start Sunday on the road against an Astros squad with a league-leading .353 wOBA against righties.
Jun 1 2017Chavez fired seven innings of one-run ball Wednesday, but he did not factor into the decision in a 2-1 win over Atlanta.Chavez finished May on a high note after giving up 10 runs over his previous two starts. He was aggressive in the strike zone (66 strikes to 26 balls) against a Braves lineup that has been without Freddie Freeman and he came out unscathed. Chavez's only run came via the long ball, extending his unenviable home run streak to nine appearances. The veteran's pedestrian 6.9 K/9 and 1.9 HR/9 limit his value to a matchup play in deep formats. That said, his next start against the righty-heavy Tigers (18th in home runs) next Tuesday could provide another favorable matchup.
May 27 2017Chavez (4-6) allowed five earned runs on eight hits and two walks over 3.2 innings in a loss to the Marlins on Friday. He struck out two.Chavez was victimized by the longball in this contest, giving up home runs to Giancarlo Stanton and J.T. Realmuto. It was a short outing for the veteran, who saw his ERA rise to 5.09 on the season to go along with a 1.32 WHIP. Given the amount of home runs he's given up on the season (2.0 HR/9), it's hard to recommend him as a consistent fantasy option. He'll take the mound on Wednesday at home against Atlanta.
May 22 2017Chavez picked up his fourth win of the season Sunday despite allowing five runs over 5.2 innings. He struck out four in a 12-5 win over the Mets.Chavez worked around a pair of solo home runs through five frames and appeared to be on his way to his third quality start in four outings. Things changed in the sixth when he served up a three-run shot to Jay Bruce and failed to escape the inning. The veteran's day was salvaged by a victory, but his ERA rose to 4.61 on the season. Chavez has exhibited plus control this season (2.8 K/BB), but his lack of command within the strike zone has made him too hittable (1.8 HR/9 and 35.6 percent hard contact rate), limiting his usefulness as a consistent fantasy option.
May 15 2017Chavez (3-5) allowed three runs and five hits (one home run) while walking one and striking out five over seven innings to beat the White Sox 5-3 on Monday. His fourth quality start of the season lowered his ERA to 4.22 on the season, but his lackluster 7.35 K/9 in 49 innings limits Chavez's value to deep mixed and AL-only leagues based on matchups. The long ball has been an issue, too, as he's surrendered eight dingers in his eight starts.
May 10 2017Chavez (2-5) gave up two runs on three hits and a pair of walks over 5.2 innings in Wednesday's loss to Oakland. He struck out five and hit a batter while throwing 111 pitches.Andrew Triggs and the Oakland bullpen were just better on the other end, giving up only a single run. Chavez is showing himself to be pretty much the same pitcher he's been for the last few years, whether in the rotation or the bullpen -- an ERA north of 4.00 and a WHIP north of 1.30, but just enough strikeouts and solid outings to tease fantasy owners in need of pitching help. He's nothing more than a spot-start pickup in most formats.
May 6 2017Chavez tossed a quality start Friday, holding the Astros to three runs on four hits over 6.1 innings. He walked two, struck out four and did not factor into the decision in a 7-6 loss. The veteran starter pitched well against a powerful Astros lineup, notching his third quality start of the season. The overall results have been mediocre (4.46 ERA), but Chavez has provided some value for deep and AL-only owners due to his ability to generate strikeouts (30 in 36.1 innings) and consistently eat up five to six innings per outing. The 33-year-old's next turn in the rotation comes against his former club, the Oakland Athletics, next Wednesday.
May 5 2017Chavez will start for the Angels on Friday against the Astros, Richard Dean of MLB.com reports. The Halos have shuffled their rotation a bit with Tyler Skaggs (oblique) on the disabled list and Alex Meyer joining the fray. Chavez will host the dangerous Houston lineup and may not have Mike Trout (hamstring) patrolling the outfield. It's not the best opportunity to stream Chavez.
Apr 29 2017Chavez (2-4) took the loss Saturday against the Rangers, allowing four runs on eight hits and a pair of walks across six innings of work. He also struck out three. The 33-year-old was cruising through his first four frames of the evening, but the wheels came off in the fifth, when Nomar Mazara, Carlos Gomez and Rougned Odor all collected two-out hits to put the Rangers up for good. This hiked Chavez's pitch count up to 97 in his six innings, with 60 of those offerings going for strikes. Fortunately for him, he'll get to return to Angel Stadium in his next start Friday against the Astros, where he holds a 2.32 ERA in 31 innings pitched over the past three seasons.
Apr 25 2017Chavez (2-3) allowed a single run on four hits and four walks while striking out seven batters over six innings during Monday's win over Toronto. After spending the entire 2016 campaign pitching out of the bullpen, Chavez has made three starts for the Angels, and this was easily his best. The veteran righty has proven to be a capable end-of-the-rotation starter in the past, but he hardly moves the fantasy needle enough to be more than a matchup option or streamer in most seasonal leagues. With a career 4.07 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 8.1 K/9, there is upside, but he's prone to poor outings against strong opponents. A road start against Texas awaits, and Chavez owns a career 5.28 ERA at Globe Life Park in Arlington.
Apr 23 2017Chavez will make his next start Monday against the Blue Jays, Pedro Moura of the Orange County Register reports. After limiting the Astros to one run over seven innings back on April 17, Chavez was initially scheduled to make his next turn in the rotation Sunday against the Blue Jays, but manager Mike Scioscia ended up going with Daniel Wright for that contest after Chavez was needed in relief during Friday's 13-inning loss. Chavez will now be in line for a two-start week, as he'll follow up his outing in Monday's series finale with another turn April 29 against the Rangers in Arlington.
Apr 22 2017Chavez entered Friday's 13-inning contest with the Blue Jays, putting his status for Sunday's scheduled start in question, The Orange County Register's J.P. Hoornstra reports. The Angels emptied their entire bullpen in a marathon affair with the Blue Jays, so Chavez -- who has experience as a reliever -- was called upon to eat some innings. He only pitched one inning, so there is a chance he could still make his scheduled start against these very same Blue Jays on Sunday, but it wouldn't be surprising to see his next outing pushed back. Daniel Wright would be the favorite to be called up for a spot start should Chavez get rescheduled.
Apr 17 2017Chavez (1-2) allowed two runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out five over seven innings in Monday's 3-0 loss to the Astros. It was a nice bounce-back performance from Chavez, who allowed five runs in 4.1 innings in his last outing against the Rangers. The 33-year-old right-hander doesn't have any one skill that stands out, but he can be serviceable in AL-only leagues based on matchups. However, he must continue to pitch well in order to stick in the rotation long term.
Apr 13 2017Chavez (1-1) gave up five runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three over 4.1 innings in Wednesday's 8-3 loss to the Rangers.Mike Napoli and Elvis Andrus touched Chavez up for solo homers in the second inning, and then the wheels completely came off in the fifth as the righty saw the first four batters of the inning reach base. The 33-year-old now sports a 5.40 ERA through two starts but his 9:3 K:BB in 10 innings is a little more reassuring. Chavez won't have an easier assignment in his next trip to the mound, though, as he takes on the Astros in Houston on Tuesday.
Apr 8 2017Chavez (1-0) allowed just one run across 5.2 innings in Friday's win over the Mariners, yielding four hits and one walk compared to six strikeouts.Chavez worked efficiently in his Angels debut, allowing just two men to reach through five innings before running out of gas with two outs in the sixth, when three men reached to plate the only run for the visitors. He threw first-pitch strikes to 18 of 22 batters, pounding the zone at a 66 percent clip, and his six punchouts were his most since his last MLB start in September of 2015. Chavez's conversion back to a starting role looks to be off to a smooth start and he will look to build on a fine season debut Tuesday against the Rangers.
Mar 30 2017Chavez was officially named the Angels' fifth starter on Thursday.Chavez had been locked in a battle with Alex Meyer for a spot in the back of the end the Angels' rotation throughout the spring, but Chavez's sharp spring ultimately earned him the job. He notched a 2.51 ERA with 12 strikeouts over 13.1 innings this spring. As it stands, Chavez is in line to start one of the Angels' games against the Mariners in the opening week of the season.
Mar 28 2017Chavez was the winning pitcher of record Monday, tossing six shutout innings while walking none and striking out three in a win over the Diamondbacks. The 33-year-old wrapped up his final outing in Arizona on a strong note, lowering his Cactus League ERA to 2.51 with 12 strikeouts in 14.1 innings. The righty appears to be at the top of his game right now, hitting 96 mph on the radar gun for the first time this spring. Chavez has already locked up the Angels' fifth starter role out of camp, giving him some deep-league value as a pitcher who can generate strikeouts at a decent clip (8.0 career K/9). On the flip side, he can be too aggressive in the strike zone at times (4.54 career ERA and 1.3 HR/9), keeping him off of standard league radars until he shows a string of consistency.
Mar 24 2017Chavez will open the season in the Angels' rotation, the Orange County Register reports.Chavez was solid enough in spring to hold off competition from Alex Meyer and Bud Norris to make the rotation. His best years came in 2014 and 2015 with division rival Oakland, in which he posted a combined 3.83 ERA over 303 innings. If the Angels can get that level of performance from Chavez, they should be very happy with their investment.
Mar 18 2017Chavez threw 68 pitches in a minor league game Friday, while his main competition, Bud Norris was told he will no longer follow a starting pitcher's rest schedule, The Orange County Register reports.Chavez was already considered the front-runner to win the Angels' fifth starter job, but the organization's usage of the pitchers in the competition Friday only increases that likelihood. The 33-year-old pitcher won't generate much fantasy buzz outside of very deep leagues, but there is strikeout potential in his arm as a potential streamer or as a cheap DFS option in strong matchups. We will have to wait for an official announcement to be made, but Chavez appears to be the pitcher to target if you were following this competition.
Mar 13 2017Chavez had a solid outing Sunday, giving up two runs on four hits in his four innings of work. He struck out three and walked none in a win over the Mariners.Chavez has been average at best this spring, posting a 4.32 ERA with nine strikeouts in his 8.1 innings of work. Even with the mediocre results, he remains the front-runner for the Angels' fifth rotation spot. His main competition, Bud Norris, has missed time with a finger injury and hasn't been effective on the mound this spring (6.23 ERA in 4.1 innings). It is still early, and things can change, but Chavez is the guy to target in deeper formats for those targeting a cheap source of strikeouts.
Mar 7 2017Chavez made his second spring training start Monday, going 2.1 innings and giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits while notching three strikeouts in a loss to the Cubs.In just two starts, Chavez has given us a brief glimpse of both the upside and downside he provides as a starter. His first outing went without a hitch, tossing two clean innings and striking out three. This time around, the veteran pitcher was far too hittable in his 2.1 innings of work. The saving grace for a pitcher like Chavez is that he will rarely put himself in a situation where he is letting hitters get on base without taking the bat off their shoulders. He remains in the thick of the race for the Angels' final rotation spot.
Mar 2 2017Chavez made his first Cactus League appearance Wednesday, tossing two innings of shutout ball while striking out three in a win over Texas.Chavez is currently the favorite to win the Angels' final rotation spot out of spring training. The veteran righty is an intriguing option in fantasy as he has always shown an ability to strikeout batters, even as a 33-year-old last season (8.5 K/9). The issue with Chavez is that he can be a bit too hittable at times, which has led to an ERA north of four over the past two seasons. If he can keep his ERA under four (like he did with the Athletics in 2013 and 2014), then he could have value in standard formats. For now, we should just consider him a deep league option with some upside for strikeouts.
Feb 13 2017Chavez enters spring training as the front-runner to win the Angels' fifth starter job.It would make sense for the club to give Chavez first crack at the job after they signed him to a $5.75 million contract this past offseason. The 33-year-old has pitched for three different clubs over the past two years, posting ERAs north of four at each stop. While the ERA likely lands him in the streamer category in standard leagues, Chavez's solid strikeout rate last season (8.46 K/9) and his new pitcher-friendly ballpark could make him a decent option in deep and AL-only formats.
Nov 11 2016Chavez agreed to a one-year, $5.75 million contract with the Angels on Friday, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports.According to the report, Chavez was signed to be a starter. He pitched exclusively out of the bullpen in 2016, posting a 4.43 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 62 appearances between Toronto and Los Angeles. He was largely done in by the long ball, giving up 12 homers in 67 innings, but seven of those were surrendered in just 26.1 innings at Rogers Centre. The move to Anaheim should help some in that regard although Angel Stadium was more favorable for home runs than normal in 2016.
Sep 22 2016Chavez has a 3.57 ERA in 22.2 innings (1.77 ERA in his last 20.1 innings) since being traded to the Dodgers from Toronto at the August 1 trade deadline.Chavez has allowed 30 baserunners during that stretch, so he's been a bit shaky at times. However, since a pair of poor outings to open his tenure in Los Angeles, Chavez has been much better.
Aug 1 2016Chavez has been traded from the Blue Jays to the Dodgers, Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports.Chavez, who has posted a 4.57 ERA with 42 strikeouts in 41.1 innings, will give the Dodgers bullpen much-needed depth. He will join right-handers Joe Blanton, Pedro Baez, Luis Coleman and Ross Stripling. The 32-year-old has been a starter and reliever for the Athletics and Blue Jays over the past five seasons.
Jul 21 2016Chavez could potentially fill a starting role in the near future, the Toronto Star reports. The option of sending Aaron Sanchez to the bullpen becomes more muddy by the day, but if Toronto does indeed move him, the Chavez may get a big boost in fantasy value. The right-hander started 46 games for Oakland over the past two seasons, going 15-23 with a 3.83 ERA. He's a solid candidate for the job if the team decides to stay within the organization to find pitching help. However, there are so many variables associated with the situation that make it too early to jump the gun on assuming Chavez's fantasy value will rise in the near future.
Jul 11 2016Chavez has posted a respectable 3.41 ERA and 1.19 WHIP while striking out 35 over 34.1 innings during the first half of 2016.A year removed from starting 26 games in Oakland, Chavez has smoothly adjusted to his role in Toronto's bullpen. His ERA and WHIP are both career bests. In addition, the right-hander is issuing less walks than ever before while pumping his average fastball (93.4 mph) at its highest speed since 2010. With that said, he's been on the brighter side of luck so far, with an 80-percent strand rate (career 71 percent) and a .288 BABIP (career .317) that both the best he's had in any of his nine MLB campaigns. Furthermore, Chavez did stumble to the first-half finish line, so beware that he's a prime candidate for a second-half regression.
Jun 28 2016Chavez allowed two runs, three hits and a walk while recording just one out in Monday's loss to the Rockies.Just when it looked like he was finally pulling it all together, Chavez has a disastrous stretch to put himself back in manager John Gibbons' doghouse. In five appearances since June 19, Chavez has given up six runs on eight hits over 3.2 innings. Gibbons may have no choice but to deploy the right-handed reliever in low-leverage situations going forward.
Jun 21 2016Thanks to a mechanical adjustment, Chavez has seemingly overcome his early season struggles, Sportsnet reports. The 32-year-old didn't make clear the specific changes in mechanics, but the righty made reference to his arm slot and grip. Chavez thinks the mechanical issue cropped up because he started his off-season routine late this winter as he was recovering from a broken rib. From May 28 through June 18 he strung together 11 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run, a stretch that saw opposition hitters bat .139/.184/.139 against him.
May 17 2016Chavez has been suspended three games by Major League Baseball for his role in Sunday's benches-clearing brawl with the Rangers, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet reports. Chavez will begin serving his suspension immediately.Chavez pitched in each of the last two games, so it makes sense for the reliever to begin serving it right away, rather than attempting an appeal. The right-hander will sit out Tuesday and Wednesday against the Rays, and he'll serve the final game of the ban Thursday when the Jays open a four-game set with the Twins in Minneapolis. Chavez will be eligible to return Friday night for Game 2 of the Twins series.
May 17 2016Chavez will appeal his three-game suspension for his role in Sunday's brawl with the Rangers, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports. There was a sense Chavez might just accept the appeal, seeing as he pitched Sunday and Monday and probably would have been unavailable for a couple days anyway. However, Chavez will appeal and will be available out of the Jays' bullpen until a ruling is handed down.
May 15 2016Chavez was ejected from Sunday's game after plunking Prince Fielder in the bottom of the eighth inning, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet reports.Chavez's actions came after a benches-clearing brawl in the top of the eighth inning that resulted in three other ejections. It's quite possible a minor suspension is on the horizon but any supplemental discipline should be announced in the coming days.
Apr 23 2016Chavez (back) tossed 1.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen against Oakland on Friday night. He allowed a hit and struck out one during the outing. Thus far in 2016, Chavez has been effective out of the Toronto bullpen, posting a 9:1 K:BB, 1.50 ERA, and 1.17 WHIP over six appearances.
Apr 21 2016Manager John Gibbons said that Chavez (back) is feeling better but likely won't pitch Thursday, Barry Davis of Sportsnet reports. It's promising that Chavez appears to be past the back soreness that was bothering him since Tuesday, but it appears the Blue Jays still want to be cautious with the right-hander. He's been one of the better members of the bullpen so far this season, striking out eight batters in 4.1 innings thus far, so he should slot back into a fairly prominent role in the Blue Jays bullpen once he's deemed ready to return.
Apr 20 2016Chavez (back) will not be available again Wednesday against the Orioles, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports.Chavez is still dealing with a sore back that's now sidelined him for two consecutive games. The 32-year-old has given up one earned run over 4.1 innings on the young season to go along with eight strikeouts. It's unclear whether the righty will be available out of the bullpen for Thursday's series finale against the Orioles.
Apr 19 2016Chavez was not available to pitch in Tuesday's game due to back soreness, Sportsnet's Barry Davis reports. His back locked up earlier in the day when he was playing catch. Chavez said he hopes to be fine for Wednesday's game, so he should be considered day-to-day for now. So far he has a 2.08 ERA and 1.38 WHIP working in relief for the Jays.
Mar 23 2016Chavez is ticketed for a bullpen role to start the season, MLB Network's Jon Heyman reports. He seemed like a likely addition to the rotation when the Blue Jays traded for him during the offseason, but Gavin Floyd and Aaron Sanchez have emerged as the top options for the fifth spot in the rotation. Chavez should serve as a long reliever and swingman this year, but could enter the rotation if the Jays suffer an injury or two.
Feb 6 2016Chavez won his arbitration case and will make $4 million in 2016, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports. While arbitration trials aren't the best way to get on the right foot with a new team, Chavez will bring a solid back-of-the-rotation presence to a staff that needs starting depth. The $4 million salary is a $1.85 million raise from last season.
Nov 20 2015Chavez was traded to the Blue Jays on Friday for Liam Hendriks, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports. The Jays have a hole in the rotation, with David Price likely heading elsewhere in free agency. Chavez has had a FIP under 4.00 in each of the last three seasons, and he pitched a career-high 157 innings in 2015 before being shut down after suffering a broken rib. It's a downgrade in ballpark for the veteran righty, but an indisputable upgrade in projected run support, so he could win double-digit games for the first time in his career.
Sep 16 2015Chavez (ribs) was placed on the 60-day disabled list on Wednesday. After suffering a non-displaced rib fracture that ended his season, Chavez was placed on the 60-day DL to clear a spot on the 40-Man roster for Barry Zito.
Sep 15 2015Chavez has been scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.Chavez told reporters that he's dealing with rib soreness and has been having trouble breathing. An X-ray revealed no serious damage, and the team is considering sending him home to undergo an MRI. With only a few weeks remaining in the season, Chavez indicated that he may not pitch again in 2015. Oakland is yet to announce who will take the hill in Chavez's place Wednesday.
Sep 15 2015Chavez has a non-displaced rib fracture and his season is over, MLB.com's Jane Lee reports. The 32-year-old righty predictably regressed this season, posting a 4.18 ERA compared to a 3.45 ERA in 2014. That said, his 3.86 FIP was almost identical to his 3.89 FIP from last season, so that is probably a good gauge of his true talent. He should compete for a spot at the back of Oakland's rotation next spring. Cody Martin will make the start Wednesday against the White Sox and could stick in Oakland's rotation down the stretch.
Sep 11 2015Chavez (7-15) gave up three runs on six hits and a walk over six innings while striking out six in a loss to Texas.Chavez's performance was relatively solid when compared to some of his recent outings, but he happened to be dueling against Colby Lewis, who tossed a shutout. This season has been a tale of two Chavezes as, after registering a 3.20 ERA and 1.18 WHIP through July 1, he has notched a 5.72 ERA and 1.60 WHIP since. Though his strong start has skewed his season numbers into respectability, know that you won't be getting that level of pitcher should you pick him up.
Sep 5 2015Chavez (7-14) struggled on Saturday, allowing five runs on six hits and five walks over just two innings in a loss to the Mariners. That record that looks like a football score is extremely unfair to Chavez as he's been very effective for the A's this season. With that said, 11 base runners in just two innings is a dreadful performance. Chavez has allowed at least four runs in six of his last nine outings and the innings may be getting to him as he's already surpassed a career-high in innings pitched. He'll look to pitch better next Friday against the Rangers in his next scheduled start.
Aug 25 2015Chavez allowed six earned runs and eight hits in 4.2 in a loss to the Mariners on Tuesday night.Chavez was staked to an early 5-0 lead, but was unable to even get through five innings with the lead. He has had a rough second half of the season and has seen his ERA rise from 3.21 to 4.00 his last seven starts. He has had a couple of gems in that run, but also four starts where he has allowed four or more runs and three starts where he has not even managed to complete five innings. Chavez is next scheduled to take the mound on Sunday in Arizona.
Aug 19 2015Chavez struck out six and walked two while holding the Dodgers to two runs on two hits over eight innings in a winning effort Wednesday. The victory was just the seventh of the season for Chavez, who lowered his season ERA to 3.75 with the outing. Wednesday's start marked the fourth time this season that Chavez has posted a game score of 74 -- highest second-best mark behind a season-high 77 on June 17 against the Padres. The A's have Chavez lined up for a road start against Seattle on Tuesday for his next turn in the rotation.
Aug 13 2015Chavez will get the starting nod Thursday against the Blue Jays due to a late scratch of Sonny Gray (back).Chavez was originally scheduled to take the mound Friday against Baltimore, but fantasy owners will now catch a tough break, as he'll be bumped up to face one of the best offensive lineups in baseball. The 31-year-old right-hander hasn't faced Toronto yet this season, but is coming off one of his better outings of 2015, tossing seven innings of one-run ball against the Astros. He'll look to improve upon a 6-11 record in the afternoon contest.
Aug 13 2015Chavez (6-12) struck out nine without a walk over six innings in his spot start against the Blue Jays on Thursday, but gave up four runs and took the loss.Of all the guys in the Toronto lineup to burn Chavez, it was light-hitting shortstop Ryan Goins who got to him with a three-run homer in the second inning that accounted for most of the damage. That inning aside, this was actually a commendably good start for Chavez against a really tough offense, especially considering that he was a last-minute insertion when Sonny Gray was scratched due to back spasms.
Aug 8 2015Chavez stymied the Astros on Saturday, allowing just one run on six hits and four walks over seven innings to pick up his sixth win of the season. He struck out four.He was hit hard at times, but enough line drives headed directly into the gloves of A's fielders that Chavez was able to avoid any serious damage. It's his first quality start in four outings, and he'll try to build on that momentum Friday in Baltimore.
Aug 4 2015Chavez served up six runs on nine hits and two walks over just 3.2 innings in a loss Monday against the Orioles.Chavez couldn't miss bats, as he induced just three swinging strikes. As a result, he failed to get out of the fourth inning for the second time in the past three starts. Chavez allowed two home runs for just the second time all year. He has served up six homers in six starts since July and has a 6.51 ERA in that span.
Jul 30 2015Chavez gave up three runs on five hits in five innings Wednesday against the Dodgers. He struck out five and walked two in the no-decision.In his past seven starts, Chavez is 2-4 and has seen ERA go up an entire run -- from 2.52 to 3.53. After lasting just three innings and 80 pitches in his last start, Chavez went for five innings and had 79 pitches Wednesday -- the fewest he's had in 18 starts this season. The 31-year-old will draw the Orioles on Monday for his next scheduled start.
Jul 25 2015Chavez had a rough outing on Friday night against the Giants, allowing eight hits and four runs over three innings.Chavez had allowed four runs in three of his last four starts and has seen his ERA jump up about half a run (to 3.45) so far in July. He was exceptional in his last outing, but did not have his good stuff Friday night against the cross-town rival. Chavez will try and bounce back in his next start, scheduled for next Thursday at home against the Indians.
Jul 25 2015Chavez had a rough outing on Friday night against the Giants, allowing eight hits and four runs over only three innings.Chavez had allowed four runs in three of his last four starts and has seen his ERA jump up about half a run so far in July and it now stands at 3.45. He was exceptional in his last outing, but did not have his good stuff from the get go on Friday night against the crosstown rival. Chavez will try and bounce back in his next start, scheduled for Thursday at home against the Indians.
Jul 19 2015Chavez was outstanding against the Twins on Sunday, striking out nine and walking just one across six shutout innings.Although he ranks near the bottom of the league in run support per start, Chavez's teammates made sure his efforts stood up on Sunday by providing him with 14 runs. He had begun to fade a bit heading into the All-Star break, but was able to toss a gem in his first start of the second half and dropped his ERA back down to 3.21. Chavez will next take the mound Friday against the Giants.
Jul 4 2015Chavez struck out four and did not walk a batter, but he allowed four runs on nine hits over 6.1 innings in a losing effort against Seattle on Friday night.A pair of two-run homers from Logan Morrison and Seth Smith represented all of the damage done against Chavez in Friday's outing. His final start before the All-Star break is scheduled for Thursday against the Yankees in New York.
Jun 28 2015Chavez fell to 4-7 on the season Sunday, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks across 5.2 innings against the Royals. The 31-year-old cruised through five innings but could not escape the sixth, when Kansas City chased him from the game after scoring three times and proceeded to add another two runs. Chavez has struggled to go deep into either of his last two starts, but he still has a 3.02 ERA on the season and will draw a favorable matchup against the Mariners on Friday.
Jun 23 2015Chavez struggled on Tuesday, allowing five runs over only five innings, but was able to get his fourth win. After a season where Chavez has often lacked for run support while pitching well, the A's offense picked him up on Tuesday. He had allowed only one run through four innings and had retired seven straight headed into the fifth, but he then allowed four runs and five hits in the inning. Chavez has been fantastic since moving into the A's rotation and sits with a 2.90 over 83.2 innings. Chavez is scheduled to next pitch on Sunday at home versus the Royals.
Jun 18 2015Chavez (3-6) struck out 11 while giving up only one run on three hits and one walk in Wednesday's 16-2 demolition of the Padres. The 11 strikeouts were a career high for Chavez, who has won for only the second time in his last eight starts. Chavez went into the game with the eighth-lowest ERA in the AL but had gotten little to no run support in his previous 10 starts. Against the Padres, however, Chavez got more than enough backing and was dominant as he fanned seven of the first 11 batters and didn't allow a runner past first base until the sixth. Chavez will look to continue his strong showing at the mound when he takes on the Rangers in Texas in his next scheduled start Tuesday.
Jun 13 2015Chavez struck out three and walked two while giving up three runs on seven hits over seven innings in a no-decision Friday night against the Angels. In his three-year stint with Oakland, Chavez has delivered a slightly declining strikeout rate (20.5% K% in 2015) along with a gradually improving walk rate (6.3% BB%). Through 14 appearances this season Chavez has turned in his best ERA (2.79) and WHIP (1.14) as a member of the A's. This season, he's much more likely to stick in the rotation all year as it's doubtful that significant upgrades will be acquired for the rotation in July.
Jun 6 2015Chavez got boxed around Saturday, giving up four runs on 10 hits and a walk over five innings to drop his record to 2-6. He struck out five. His 16 inning scoreless streak ended in a hurry Saturday, as the Red Sox hung two runs on Chavez in the first inning and never looked back. He'll take his 2.51 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 56:16 K:BB ratio into his next start on Friday, on the road in Anaheim.
May 31 2015Chavez was excellent for the second straight start on Sunday against the Yankees, striking out six and walking zero across eight shutout innings en route to his second win of the season. The 31-year-old's record now sits at just 2-5 on the season, which is puzzling considering he has posted a 2.11 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP through 59.2 innings pitched. Chavez has not allowed a run in his last 16 innings pitched and will look to continue this stretch of dominance on Friday against a struggling Red Sox team.
May 26 2015Chavez was great on Tuesday night, allowing no earned runs over eight innings, but took a hard-luck 1-0 loss due to an unearned run.Chavez certainly deserved better, but the combination of the A's offense and defense did him in. A throwing error by Josh Phegley in the first inning allowed a runner to advance to third who then scored on a sacrifice fly for the only run of the game. After starting the year in the bullpen, Chavez has entrenched himself in the A's rotation as he lowered his season ERA to 2.44 with his gem tonight. Chavez will next take the mound on Sunday at home versus the Yankees.
May 22 2015Chavez struck out six and gave up three runs on five hits and a walk in six innings Thursday against the Rays.Chavez gave up an RBI double to David DeJesus in the fourth, then a solo shot to DeJesus in the seventh. After giving up a single to Brandon Guyer, Chavez was relieved by Edward Mujica. Guyer stole second and third, then scored on Bobby Wilson's groundout that hit Mujica and broke his right thumb. Chavez was credited with the run and ultimately took the loss on a night when his A's were shut out. The 31-year-old has a 2.89 ERA this season, but sports an uninspiring 1-4 record. He'll look to bounce back in his next scheduled start Tuesday against Detroit.
May 10 2015Chavez allowed four runs over 6.2 innings against the Mariners on Sunday, striking out seven and walking two en route to his third loss of the season. The 31-year-old cruised through three innings, but ran into a bit of trouble in the fourth and fifth, when Seattle put a couple of rallies together and did all their damage. Chavez was able to rebound, however, and actually put together a decent start. He appears to be entrenched in the Athletics starting rotation at the present time, and is next scheduled to pitch against the White Sox on Saturday.
May 6 2015Chavez made his fourth start of the season Tuesday against the Twins, earning a win by striking out seven batters in 7.1 innings and only allowing one unearned run on four hits.Chavez took over Kendall Graveman's spot in the rotation, who was optioned to Triple-A after a poor start to the season. Through four starts, Chavez's ERA is just 1.80, as he's allowed a combined five earned runs.
Apr 30 2015Chavez (0-2) labored through five innings Thursday in a loss to the Angels, giving up four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five. After delivering six strong innings against the Angels last Thursday, Chavez got the call against them again a week later, and it didn't go nearly as well. However, he posted a 3.45 ERA while pitching mostly as a starter last year, and even after the ugly outing, Chavez's ERA and WHIP for this season sit at a shiny 2.55 and 1.13, respectively. Next up: a matchup with the Twins on Tuesday.
Apr 28 2015Chavez will make his next start Thursday against the Angels, John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group reports.Chavez was originally pencilled in for Friday, but he'll ultimately end up swapping spots with Scott Kazmir. The 31-year-old righty tossed six innings of one-run ball Thursday, with that run representing the only one he's allowed all season. That performance has earned Chavez a rotation spot moving forward, potentially making him worth a look in deeper and AL-only formats.
Apr 26 2015After Kendall Graveman was optioned to Triple-A Nashville on Sunday, Chavez looks poised to claim a spot in the Athletics' rotation, MLB.com's Jane Lee reports.Chavez made a spot start Thursday while Jesse Hahn was dealing with a blister and more than acquitted himself, holding the Angels to two runs (one earned) on one hit and three walks over six innings. None of Graveman's four starts were nearly as impressive as that, so manager Bob Melvin seems inclined to give Chavez at least a trial run as the squad's No. 5 starter, though fellow long reliever Chris Bassitt probably hasn't been ruled out as an option either. Chavez was quite capable as a member of the rotation for much of 2014 with the Athletics, posting a 3.44 ERA and 119 strikeouts over 125.2 innings before a late swoon resulted in his move to the bullpen in the second half. He should make for an attractive waiver-wire target in deeper leagues.
Apr 26 2015The Athletics confirmed Sunday that Chavez would take over Kendall Graveman's spot in the rotation, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.Chavez's excellent spot start Thursday against the Angels (six innings, one earned run allowed, four strikeouts) evidently provided enough reason for manager Bob Melvin to give him at least another turn in the rotation in place of Graveman, who was demoted to Triple-A Nashville on Sunday after posting an 8.27 ERA over four outings. The right-hander, who posted a serviceable 3.45 ERA over 32 appearances (21 starts) and 146 innings last season, looks set to take the ball Friday against the Rangers.
Apr 23 2015Chavez pitched well on Thursday, allowing only one earned run and one hit over six innings.Unfortunately for Chavez, the solitary hit was a two-run homer by Kole Calhoun. Chavez was filling in for Jesse Hahn and should return to the bullpen assuming Hahn's blister has healed before his next scheduled start. Chavez will certainly be the next in line should a rotation spot open up due to injury or poor performance.
Apr 19 2015Chavez will be used a spot starter if Jesse Hahn (hand) is unable to get ready for his projected start Thursday, MLB.com's Jane Lee reports.Chavez will get ready just in case, which likely means he won't be used in long relief situations until then as a precaution. The As are optimistic that Hahn will be ready to go after leaving Saturday's start due to a blister on his throwing hand, but Monday's side session will likely play a major role in determining the schedule moving forward. Chavez made 21 starts for Oakland in 2014, so he's certainly no stranger to this type of role.
Apr 18 2015Chavez was exceptional out of the pen on Saturday, allowing no runs with six strikeouts over 3.2 innings to earn the save.Chavez is currently serving as the long man in the A's bullpen after losing out in the competition for the rotation in the spring. He has now allowed no runs so far in 2015 over 6.2 innings while registering nine punchouts. Chavez is first in line to grab a rotation spot should an injury occur.
Apr 2 2015Chavez has officially been eliminated from contention for the starting rotation, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports. This was the expected outcome for Chavez, as it was earlier reported he's expected to begin in the bullpen. He'll likely serve as a long reliever for the A's, and would be the top candidate to start should one of the starters go down.
Mar 30 2015Schugel was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Monday.Schugel entered spring training hoping to nab a bullpen spot with the Diamondback, but it appears that is out of reach at this point. He will return to Triple-A for now, and likely remains a few injuries away from returning to the big league roster.
Mar 27 2015Chavez struggled on Thursday, allowing two runs and seven hits over 3.2 innings. This is not the start Chavez needed in his battle for a spot in the A's rotation. He has now allowed 24 hits and four walks over 16 innings and could be falling behind Drew Pomeranz for the fifth starter spot.
Mar 20 2015Chavez allowed two runs over four innings in Friday's spring game, but did strike out five Rockies.Chavez is currently in the midst of a four-way battle for three open rotation spots in the A's rotation. Friday's outing did not hurt his chances, but did not make any sort of positive statement either. Chavez was effective as a starter for the A's in 2014 (3.44 ERA with 119 strikeouts in 125.2 as a starter), which has to help his cause, but the A's have been non-committal to date regarding his chances. If he were to lose out on a rotation spot, Chavez would likely work as a long reliever out of the bullpen.
Jan 12 2015Chavez and the A's avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.15 million contract Monday, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports.Chavez finished last season as a reliever, but he opened the campaign as a starter, and will have an opportunity to do so again in 2015 with Jarrod Parker (elbow) and A.J. Griffin (ankle) unlikely to be ready for Opening Day. Chavez posted a 3.44 ERA and struck out 119 batters in 125.2 innings over 21 starts for the A's last season.
Aug 1 2014Chavez said Friday that he will move to the bullpen, Joe Stiglich of CSN California reports.Chavez is the odd man out in the rotation with the addition of Jon Lester. The selection for the last rotation spot will instead go to Jason Hammel, and Chavez will likely contribute as a long reliever out of the bullpen when needed.
Jul 31 2014Chavez seems likely to move to the bullpen after the acquisition of Jon Lester, reports Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.Chavez or Jason Hammel will have to move to the pen for now as they A's now have four clear starters that will be in the rotation. Chavez has had a strong season so far, compiling a 3.44 ERA over his 21 starts with 8.5 K/9, but has faded as the year has gone on and his ERA since May 1st is 4.11 while his WHIP in the same time frame is a not-so-pretty 1.45. In addition, Chavez has more experience pitching out the pen than Hammel does which could be another factor in the decision to move Chavez to a long relief role.
Jul 29 2014Chavez was hit hard Monday in a loss to the Astros, giving up six runs on five hits, including three home runs, three walks and five strikeouts over 5.1 innings. It was long balls by Chris Carter, Jason Castro and Marc Krauss that did Chavez in. July has been unkind to the 30-year-old, who has been hit to the tune of a 5.20 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and .279 batting average against. Chavez faces the Royals on Sunday.
Jul 24 2014Chavez (8-6) earned the victory Wednesday against the Astros while giving up two runs on four hits, two walks and seven strikeouts over 5.2 innings. In his first start since July 12, Chavez was not extremely sharp, needing 101 pitches (60 for strikes) to get through 5.2 innings. Despite the lack of efficiency, he was able to avoid any major damage. Chavez improves to 8-6 with a 3.14 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 114:38 K:BB ratio in 120.1 innings. He will take on the Astros again Monday in Houston.
Jul 12 2014Chavez allowed three runs on 10 hits, walking two and striking out six over 5.2 innings of a 6-2 loss to the Mariners on Saturday night.Chavez (7-6, 3.14 ERA) started off strongly in the game but had to scramble to get out of trouble as the game progressed while his offense sputtered against his opponent Hisashi Iwakuma. He kept the game close before allowing a two-run home run to Kyle Seager fifth inning and then departed in the sixth after giving up a two-out double. Overall it's been a solid season to date but he has struggled a bit in three of his last four starts and the league may be catching on to his limited arsenal.
Jul 8 2014Chavez earned his seventh win of the season Monday, blanking the Giants for six innings on four hits while striking out nine.Chavez validated the A's decision to leave him in the rotation by throwing a gem Monday. This is a good sign for the right-hander, who was coming off back-to-back poor outings. Chavez improves to 7-5 with a 3.06 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 101:34 K:BB in 18 starts. He will take the hill Saturday in Seattle.
Jul 5 2014Chavez will be staying in the A's rotation, reports Joe Stiglich of CSN California. With the addition of Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel, the A's had to replace two starters and there was some speculation that Chavez could go to the pen because he has not been as sharp lately and he is not used to this heavy a workload. He stays in the rotation over Tommy Milone, but he is the clear 5th starter now and any stumbles could find him out of the rotation with Milone looming. On the season, Chavez still sports a very strong 3.23 ERA, but he has given up nine ER in his last two starts.
Jul 2 2014Chavez gave up a season-high five runs in a loss to the Tigers on Wednesday.Chavez actually pitched ok through five innings, allowing only three runs, but he walked the first two guys in the sixth inning and Jim Johnson allowed both of those runners to score. Chavez's walks are currently the biggest concern as he has now walked 11 batters in his last three starts spanning 17 innings. Those 11 walks are more than he had in the whole month of April or May. Chavez will next take the mound on Monday against the Giants.
Jun 27 2014Chavez worked into the sixth inning Friday night versus the Marlins, allowing four runs on six hits with five strikeouts. After turning in five scoreless frames, Chavez ran into trouble in the sixth. The A's right-hander surrendered four consecutive singles to start the inning before being lifted and was ultimately charged with four earned runs. Chavez will now carry his 6-4 record and impressive 2.94 ERA into a showdown with the Tigers next Wednesday.
Jun 21 2014Chavez struck out four and walked four over seven shutout innings against the Red Sox on Saturday. The four walks were a season high for Chavez, who kept the Red Sox from making hard contact throughout his start. After posting a 41:8 K:BB in 38 innings over six starts in April, Chavez has carried a 37:13 K:BB over 48 innings in his last nine outings. The reduced strikeout rate during that latter span is more indicative of his skill set, but he continues to surprise after working out of the bullpen for Oakland last season. Chavez will likely face the Marlins in his next scheduled start, but it's unclear at this time if that turn will come Friday or Saturday since the A's have two off-days during the upcoming week.
Jun 19 2014Chavez's start has been pushed back to Saturday, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.Brad Mills will join the Athletics' rotation and start Friday's game, meaning Chavez will receive and extra day of rest and take the mound Saturday versus Boston. The move keeps Mills, who last started Sunday at Triple-A Nashville as a member of the Brewers organization, on a more regular routine.
Jun 15 2014Chavez was strong on Sunday, allowing only run on five hits over six innings against the Yankees. This was a nice start for Chavez who had been scuffling a bit compared to his exceptional start to the season. He was staked to a big lead early and cruised through his six innings. Chavez had no walks in a start for the first time since April 14th. He will next take the mound on Friday in a home start against the Red Sox.
Jun 10 2014Chavez tossed six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts in Monday's loss to the Angels. After an outstanding April (2-0, 1.89 ERA), Chavez has been little more than a middle-of-the-pack hurler for fantasy purposes. Over his last seven starts, the 30-year-old right-hander has posted a 4.07 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 7.1 K/9 across 42 innings. The door to sell high on Chavez is closing quickly.
Jun 4 2014Chavez gave up four earned runs over six innings for a win against the Yankees on Wednesday. He gave up seven hits, struck out five, and walked two.Chavez ran into trouble in the third inning, giving up all four of his earned runs, including a Jacoby Ellsbury three-run home run. After a fantastic April (1.89 ERA), Chavez has regressed a bit, as his ERA is now north of 3.00 for the first time all year (3.04). Chavez still managed to move to 5-3 on the year and should still be viewed as a useful mixed-league option at the point. His next start will come against the Angels.
May 29 2014Chavez allowed eight hits and three earned runs over six innings on Thursday against the Tigers.Chavez allowed ten base runners in his six innings on Thursday while only striking out three. After an exceptional April where Chavez compiled a 1.89 ERA in six starts, Chavez has given some of his numbers back with a 3.90 ERA in five May starts. In addition, he is allowing a lot more base runners with a 1.46 WHIP in May after a 0.95 WHIP in April. Chavez has still been effective with three earned runs or less in four of his five April starts, but the extra base runners are certainly something to keep an eye on going forward.
May 24 2014Chavez was charged with four runs (two earned) on eight hits and a walk, and struck out four over 5.1 innings, in a loss to the Blue Jays on Saturday. The eight hits allowed by Chavez tied a season high and he served up another homer, his fifth in his last three starts. Chavez also failed to make it out of the sixth inning for the third time in four May outings, as he was once again pulled from the game after throwing fewer than 100 pitches. He's been allowed to exceed 100 pitches just once in his last six starts, but his season numbers are still strong (1.13 WHIP, .229 BAA) and it doesn't look like the run support is going to dry up.
May 18 2014Chavez was not especially sharp on Sunday, but managed to get through five innings while allowing only two runs to get his fourth win.Chavez allowed nine base runners and was dancing through trouble all day on Sunday as shown by the 109 pitches he threw in only five innings. Chavez will next take the hill on Saturday in Toronto.
May 13 2014Chavez turned in eight solid innings, giving up two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts in Monday's 5-4 win over the White Sox.Rebounding from a lackluster effort last week versus the Mariners, Chavez looked very strong Monday night. Now holding a 3-1 record with a 2.44 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 51-to-12 K/BB ratio across 51.2 innings, the 30-year-old hurler remains one of the biggest surprises of 2014.
May 6 2014Chavez struggled on Tuesday night, allowing four runs on seven hits over 5.2 to the Mariners.Chavez had a very poor first inning, allowing three runs and four hits, but then settled in pretty well after that. He encountered more trouble in the sixth and had to be lifted for a reliever with two outs. Even with the rough outing, Chavez will head into his next start against the White Sox on Monday with a sterling 2.47 ERA.
Apr 30 2014Chavez turned in another magnificent outing Wednesday, allowing just a hit and a walk with with eight strikeouts over seven scoreless innings, improving his record to 2-0.Chavez continues to roll through April, posting a 1.89 ERA with 41 strikeouts over 38 innings, and his peripherals suggest that this could be more than just pure luck. Chavez is exactly what the doctor ordered for the A's, who have already seen two of their starters go down to Tommy John surgery in 2014.
Apr 25 2014Chavez tossed five innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts in Friday's 12-5 victory over the Astros. For Chavez, this outing was the weakest of his five starts so far in 2014. The 30-year-old reliever turned starter has been one of the best and most surprising stories of the season to date, as he holds a 2.32 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 9.6 K/9 across 31 innings.
Apr 20 2014Chavez was excellent once again on Sunday, allowing only one run over six innings while striking out six Astros.Chavez did not appear quite as sharp as he had in his first three outings as he walked three guys on Sunday, more than he had walked combined in his first three outings. Chavez next takes the hill in Houston on Friday.
Apr 15 2014Chavez struck out nine batters and gave up two runs (one earned) over seven innings Monday against the Angels, but he's still yet to factor into a decision.Chavez has pitched brilliantly and the A's are 3-0 in his starts, but the right-hander doesn't have a win to show for it. He's one of the more surprising early-season performers, with a 1.35 ERA and 22:2 K:BB ratio through three outings. Next up is a likely Sunday matchup against the weak Houston offense.
Apr 9 2014Chavez was fantastic on Wednesday against the Twins, striking out nine of seven innings while allowing only one run.Chavez lost his win when the Jim Johnson implosion train entered in the 9th inning and Chavez now has two no-decisions despite allowing only one earned run in each outing. Chavez has adapted very well so far to his new role in the starting rotation. Chavez will make his next start on Monday against the Angels.
Apr 3 2014Chavez allowed two runs -- one earned -- on five hits and two walks in six innings Thursday in his season debut against the Mariners. He struck out four. Two errors in the first inning did not help his cause, but Chavez was also bailed out in the fifth inning by a Mariners baserunning error. He threw 91 pitches, which limited his innings, but he pitched well. He threw 15 first-pitch strikes to 25 batters and got nine groundouts. It was just the third start of Chavez's seven-year career as he transitions this year from bullpen to rotation.
Apr 1 2014Chavez will have his start pushed to Thursday's game against the Mariners, the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser reports.Chavez was scheduled to pitch Wednesday, but with Tuesday's game getting rained out, the A's have decided to dip into their minor league system for the stater of the second half of Wednesday's doubleheader, with Scott Kazmir (Tuesday's scheduled starter) getting the first half. This will push all of the A's starter's next outings back a game.
Mar 23 2014Chavez allowed five runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings in Sunday's exhibition game against the Cubs.Chavez cruised through five innings before stumbling badly in the sixth. He is likely still working up his pitch count and clearly tired when he gave up five runs, including two homers in the 6th. Chavez will get one more exhibition start before throwing the third game of the season for the A's.
Mar 18 2014Chavez allowed two runs and six hits over 4.2 innings in Tuesday's exhibition game against the White Sox.Chavez threw fairly well on Tuesday, but did allow two solo home runs. He appeared to tire a bit late in his outing and left the game in the fifth after allowing three straight batters to reach base. With the injuries in the A's rotation, Chavez is now locked in to one of the five spots in the rotation to begin the year.
Mar 18 2014Chavez will begin the season in the rotation, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.Injuries to Jarrod Parker (elbow) and A.J. Griffin (elbow) opened the door, but Chavez was making a strong case for rotation spot even before those players went down. He's hasn't allowed a run and has struck out 12 in 12.2 innings thus far. The right-hander has made just two regular season starts in his six-year career, and could be squeezed out of the mix eventually, but Chavez could hold some value in deeper mixed leagues and AL-only formats in the meantime.
Mar 14 2014Chavez is expected to open the season in the A's rotation, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Both Jarrod Parker (forearm) and A.J. Griffin (elbow) appear likely to start the year on the DL, which opens the door for Chavez and quite possibly Tommy Milone to step into the starting rotation. Chavez has arguably been the team's best pitcher this spring, as he hasn't allowed a run and has struck out 12 with just two walks over 12.2 innings thus far.
Jan 7 2014Chavez agreed to a one-year contract with the A's on Tuesday, avoiding arbitration, MLB.com reports. With Chavez's contract issues out of the way, the A's have seven arbitration-eligible players yet to sign. Chavez, a 30-year-old right-hander, posted adequate numbers in a middle/long relief role last season (3.92 ERA, 8.6 K/9), and figures to be deployed in a similar fashion in 2014.
Jul 31 2013Chavez took the loss Wednesday afternoon, allowing three runs in just one-third of an inning.Chavez was called upon to preserve a tie game in the 10th inning but wasn't up to the challenge. The A's righty has now allowed three runs in two of his last three appearances out of the bullpen.
Jun 13 2013Chavez was exceptional on Thursday throwing 5.2 innings in relief, allowing zero runs and one hit while striking out seven to earn the win.Chavez has quietly been very effective out of the pen for the A's with an ERA of 1.83, but he will remain a long reliever or mop up guy in the A's deep pen, so his fantasy value is very limited. Today's performance could earn him some more high leverage work though.
Jun 12 2013Manager Bob Melvin said Chavez is dealing with a minor pectoral injury, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The injury likely makes Chavez unavailable out of the bullpen Wednesday, but after the Athletics were off Monday and received six innings from starter Bartolo Colon on Tuesday, the relief corps should be able to survive without Chavez for at least a day. Chavez has posted a 2.57 ERA over 14 relief innings with the big club this season.
May 10 2013Chavez was recalled by the Athletics on Friday. The A's went ahead and swapped right-handed relievers by bringing up Chavez and sending down Evan Scribner. Scribner was taxed with three innings out of the bullpen Thursday, and it seem the team just wanted a fresh arm heading into Friday's series opener against the Mariners.
Apr 29 2013Chavez will be optioned Monday to make room for Dan Straily, who is making a spot start for Brett Anderson (ankle) on Monday against the Angels, MLB.com reports. After making three relief appearances with the Athletics, posting a 6.23 ERA and 3:1 K:BB ratio in 4.1 innings, Chavez will more than likely land back in Triple-A Sacramento's rotation. Despite the lackluster effort, he'll act as organizational depth and may remain at the top of the list when Oakland requires a few more cheap innings of relief.
Apr 20 2013Chavez was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday.Chavez has made three starts at Sacramento this season, posting a 1-1 record, 2.45 ERA, 1.326 WHIP, and 19:4 K:BB ratio in 18.1 innings. With Evan Scribner's demotion to Triple-A on Saturday, the Athletics required an effective (and fresh) long reliever in case of emergency, hence Chavez's call-up.
Sep 18 2012Chavez was ejected after hitting the Tigers' Prince Fielder on Tuesday, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.Chavez pitched a clean seventh inning before allowing three consecutive singles and Miguel Cabrera's subsequent grand slam. Next up was Fielder, whom he plunked, receiving an immediate ejection.
Sep 10 2012Chavez is with the team in Anaheim and will be called up from Triple-A prior to Monday's game, MLB.com's Jane Lee reports.Chavez has been mostly miserable through 152 appearances in the majors, posting a career 5.74 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP. He's done some nice things in the minors as a starter at Triple-A Sacramento this year so some potential still exists, but he'll have to work in long relief with the A's in their chase for a playoff spot.
Aug 4 2012Chavez was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday night, the team's official site reports.Chavez, who was obliterated to the tune of 20 earned runs over 20.1 innings in his first go-around with the Jays, will pitch in long-relief and mop-up duty.
Jun 27 2012Chavez has been removed from the starting rotation after a pair of inconsistent starts, the team's official site reports.Chavez figures to slide back into a long relief role if he remains with Toronto but could also find himself back at Triple-A if the team decides to keep him stretched out as a starter.
Jun 25 2012Chavez gave up six runs on seven hits, including two homers, in Sunday's loss to the Marlins. He struck out six without walking a batter, the Associated Press reports.Chavez picked up two road losses in interleague play, though this outing was less bad than some of the other starts by the Jays' recent fill-in starters. ''I attacked the zone and kept away from the walks,'' Chavez said. ''I settled in (after the second inning) and had that one hiccup in the sixth but other than that I did OK. It was just one of those things.''
Jun 18 2012Chavez was recalled by the Blue Jays on Monday night and will start against the Brewers on Tuesday, Barry Davis of Sportsnet.ca reports. It's likely that Chavez will be evaluated on a start-by-start basis as the Jays are scrambling to find healthy arms with Brandon Morrow, Drew Hutchison and Kyle Drabek all going down with injuries in their last start.
Jun 12 2012Chavez is a candidate to replace Brandon Morrow (oblique) in the rotation, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.Morrow is likely headed to the DL, while Chavez could be recalled in a corresponding move if the Jays opt to use him over Brett Cecil. Chavez has a 60:13 K:BB over 11 starts (63.2 innings) at Triple-A Las Vegas this season.
May 27 2012Chavez had his contract selected by the Blue Jays on Sunday, the team's official Twitter page reports.Chavez didn't start Sunday's game, but it looks like he may get a start in the near future. The 28-year-old right-hander has a 5.36 ERA at the major league level, but he's struck out 55 while walking just 11 at Triple-A this year.
Dec 12 2011Chavez has been designated for assignment, the Blue Jays' official Twitter feed reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The move was made to clear space on the 40-man roster for Ben Francisco, who was acquired in a trade with the Phillies on Monday.
Oct 21 2011Chavez has been claimed off of waivers by the Blue Jays, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Royals didn't have space for him on their 40-man roster, so it will be interesting to see if the Jays are able to avoid the same problem in the coming weeks as they make the necessary offseason adjustments.
Oct 11 2011After claiming Aaron Laffey from the Yankees on Tuesday, the Royals designated Chavez for assignment, Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez has really bounced around, and teams seem to value him -- he's had MLB appearances with PIT, ATL, and KC now -- so he might get claimed, but he still seems like more of a back-end bullpen guy than anything else right now.
Sep 2 2011The Royals have recalled Chavez from Triple-A Omaha, according to The Associated Press. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez made a brief, one-inning cameo for KC in June, but did appear in over 50 games in the majors last year. The 28-year-old was 2-4 with a 3.75 ERA and 1.370 WHIP in 45 appearances at Triple-A.
Jun 8 2011Chavez is expected to be sent to Triple-A Omaha Tuesday, the Kansas City Star reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez's demotion will clear room for Vin Mazzaro to enter the Royals' rotation. Chavez made just one appearance for KC, pitching the ninth inning in a loss to the Twins.
Jun 3 2011Chavez has been called up to the majors to give the Royals' bullpen an extra arm until a starter is needed to replace Sean O'Sullivan (biceps), the Royals' official site reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez has been mediocre at Triple-A Omaha this season, posting a 4.94 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in 27.1 innings. He has a talent with mediocrity and shouldn't be counted on to provide more than alive arm in the bullpen. When the Royals need another starter in four days, Chavez could get thrown back to the minors.
Sep 3 2010Chavez had another rough outing on Friday to take the loss against Detroit. Chavez surrendered four runs -- two earned -- and three hits in the 11th inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez has had a number of shaky appearances in the last few weeks, including a seven-run implosion in one inning on August 23.
Aug 1 2010Chavez was traded to the Royals on Saturday as part of a five-player swap, Ed Price of Fanhouse reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 26-year-old has a 29:12 K:BB with six homers allowed in 36.2 innings for the Braves this season. He'll likely work in middle relief for the Royals, but his fantasy value is still extremely limited by his distance from save opportunities.
Jun 16 2010Chavez was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chris Resop landed on the DL with an oblique injury, so Chavez's trip to the minors lasted just one day. He'll resume his low-leverage long relief role.
Jun 15 2010Chavez was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He struggled with a 7.33 ERA and was mostly relegated to low-leverage situations. He did have 22 strikeouts in 23.3 innings, so not all his numbers were poor. Still, he may be out of Atlanta's plans for the second half.
Dec 11 2009Chavez was traded to the Braves for Rafael Soriano, the St. Petersburg Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez will join the Braves bullpen and will likely be used in middle relief. He's shown the ability to get out left-handed hitters and may be used as a specialist in that capacity. Billy Wagner will likely enter the season as the closer; so though Chavez' fantasy value will be minimal at the beginning of the season, he could work his way up the bullpen pecking chart if the oft-injured Wagner is forced to miss any action.
Nov 4 2009The trade of Chavez from the Pirates to the Rays was finalized on Tuesday night, the Associated Press reports.
Aug 2 2009Chavez pitched in the sixth inning of Friday's game against Washington. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager John Russell told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Chavez, Joel Hanrahan and Evan Meek will form a set-up committee for closer Matt Capps following the trade of John Grabow to the Cubs. Chavez will also be used against most lefthanded hitters, as he's limited lefties to a .233 batting average.
Jul 26 2009Chavez hurled two shutout innings against Arizona Friday night. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He's got the gas to be a closer, but he needs to show better control on a consistent basis before the Pirates consider using him in such a capacity. It appears manager John Russell might be gaining a bit more confidence in him, using Chavez in three straight games with the Pirates ahead at the time. Prior to that, Chavez had pitched in 17 of 20 games with the Bucs already trailing.
Jun 22 2009Chavez surrendered a two-run homer in the ninth inning of Saturday's loss in Colorado. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He has as good of stuff as any pitcher on the roster, but it doesn't seem like he knows where it's going half the time. Chavez is 0-3 with two blown saves and four holds. The hard-throwing righty is experiencing his first season at the big league level. His 3.64 ERA and 1.35 WHIP aren't bad, but he has a chance to improve his lot with a little more experience.
May 26 2009Chavez could be a sleeper stopper pickup for the Pirates, depending on closer Matt Capps' status. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pirates manager John Russell has used the hard throwing Chavez primarily as a seventh inning reliever. Russell's confidence in Chavez has grown -- six of Chavez's last eight appearances have come in Pittsburgh wins. For the season, the righty has compiled a 1.83 ERA in 19.2 innings with four holds and a 17:7 K:BB ratio.
May 14 2009The Pirates used Chavez in a pressure spot Wednesday, but the hard-throwing right-hander allowed two hits and a run while retiring just one Cardinals player at the plate. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez entered the game in the ninth inning with Pittsburgh ahead of the Cards, 5-1. Manager John Russell is trying to add to Chavez's responsibility on the team but the rookie hasn't been able to take advantage of his opportunities so far.
May 6 2009Chavez gave up two hits and two walks while recording just one out in relief of Ian Snell Tuesday night. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez had a flashback to spring training, when he struggled to an 11.45 ERA. Chavez threw only seven of his 22 pitches for strikes on Tuesday in a miserably rainy and chilly night for baseball. With Matt Capps out for a few days and John Grabow and Tyler Yates off of their games, Chavez had an opening to find some late inning work in the next couple days. After Tuesday's showing, the chances of that happening are not great.
Apr 22 2009Chavez's stock continues to increase as the Pirates used him for the third time in four days on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He's still behind the likes of closer Matt Capps, John Grabow and Tyler Yates in the bullpen, but his mid 90s stuff makes him a darkhorse late-inning reliever if the team trades Capps or injuries strike the pen. Chavez is the biggest surprise among Pittsburgh's relief pitchers thus far, after a terrible spring training (11.45 ERA). He probably won't have much fantasy value until he's in position to pick up holds, wins or saves, but he's worth keeping an eye on as the season progresses.
Apr 3 2009The Pirates decided to make Chavez the last member of their Opening Day bullpen on Friday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez made the team because his competitor, Evan Meek, was beset by a host of injuries and ailments including a sore shoulder, flu and bronchitis. The decision certainly wasn't based upon performance -- Chavez finished with an 11.45 ERA to Meek's 3.48.
Apr 2 2009Chavez allowed three runs on three hits and three walks in one inning against the Reds Thursday afternoon. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chavez is in a fight for the last spot in the bullpen with Evan Meek (flu). He'll only make the Opening Day roster if the organization deems Meek unable to pitch because of his illness.
Aug 27 2008Chavez pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning Wednesday afternoon against the Cubs in his major league debut. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He ended his inning with an emphatic 93 mph fastball for a called third strike. Chavez's tryout came a week earlier than the typical September recall. He looked good and put up decent Triple-A numbers, going 2-6 with 14 saves, a 3.80 ERA and a 70:22 K:BB ratio in 68.2 innings.
