Jun 20 2025An MRI on Friday revealed a Grade 2 strain in Herrera's left hamstring, John Denton of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera told reporters Friday that he is expected to miss 2-to-6 weeks due to the strain. He was warned by medical staff that attempting to play through the strain could result to a season-ending injury, so the decision was made to shut him down and place him on the 10-day injured list. The Cardinals should have a better sense of when Herrera can return once he resumes baseball activities, but the severity of the injury could keep the 25-year-old sidelined through the All-Star break. With Herrera sidelined, Yohel Pozo will serve as the primary backup catcher behind Pedro Pages, while Alec Burleson, Nolan Gorman, Thomas Saggese and Willson Contreras are candidates to see increased work at designated hitter.
Jun 19 2025Herrera is not in the lineup for the second game Thursday's doubleheader against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The last game Herrera did not play in was May 10 as he has started in every game since then. He went 2-for-4 and came across as a run in the the Cardinals' 5-4 win over the White Sox in the first game of the doubleheader Thursday.
Jun 18 2025Herrera went 2-for-5 with four RBI in Tuesday's win over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera collected a pair of two-RBI singles, and his night could have been even bigger if not for Michael Taylor robbing him of a home run to lead off the top of the fifth inning. The 25-year-old has now driven in 36 runs in just 41 games for the Cardinals this season. With Brendan Donovan moving up to the leadoff spot, Herrera appears to be cementing himself as St. Louis' new No. 3 hitter against right-handed pitching.
Jun 10 2025Herrera went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in an extra-inning loss to the Blue Jays on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera looked like he could end up as the hero when he smacked a three-run shot in the eighth inning to give the Cardinals a one-run lead, but Toronto ended up pulling out the win in 10 innings. Nonetheless, it was a promising performance by the backstop, who has notched multiple hits in back-to-back games. That could be a sign that Herrera is turning things around, as before the pair of contests he was mired in a 9-for-53 slump over a 15-game span.
Jun 5 2025Herrera went 3-for-7 with a two-run home run and a walk as the Cardinals split Thursday's doubleheader versus the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera was the designated hitter for both games, which continues to be his main place in the lineup. The matinee was his first multi-hit effort since May 20, ending a stretch of 11 contests where he went a meager 6-for-38 (.158). For the season, Herrera is at a .333/.417/.578 slash line, six homers, 28 RBI, 18 runs scored and one stolen base over 30 contests. Even though he's slowed down with the bat in recent weeks, his spot as a near-everyday member of the lineup appears to be safe.
Jun 1 2025Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said recently that he plans to continue playing Herrera "mostly at the DH," Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera is starting at designated hitter again Sunday versus the Rangers, marking the 17th time in 20 starts since being activated from the 10-day injured list May 9 that he's been at DH. The 25-year-old will be mixed in at catcher 1-to-2 times per week, but the bulk of the starts behind the dish will continue going to Pedro Pages for the time being. Herrera has slowed down at the plate recently, going 4-for-30 across his last nine contests.
May 16 2025Herrera went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored in Friday's 10-4 win over the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Despite playing just 13 games so far, Herrera already has a trio of three-hit performances in 2025. Over his first 50 plate appearances, the 24-year-old backstop is slashing a robust .419/.480/.907 with five home runs, six doubles, 18 RBI and 12 runs scored. Although those figures are unsustainable, Herrera is certainly worth a look in the majority of mixed leagues for those in need of help at catcher.
May 14 2025Herrera went 4-for-8 with a double and two runs scored as the Cardinals split Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera missed over a month due to a left knee bone bruise. Since his return, he's gone 7-for-18 with three extra-base hits, three RBI and four runs scored, including an impressive performance in Wednesday's doubleheader. He was the designated hitter in the matinee game before returning to catching duties in the nightcap. He's had a hot bat in limited action this season, batting .385 with five homers, 14 RBI, 10 runs scored, four doubles and no stolen bases over 12 contests.
May 10 2025Herrera isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against Washington. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera went 1-for-4 with two RBI in his return from the injured list Friday, and he'll get a day off Saturday as the Cardinals look to ease him back into regular action. Pedro Pages will start behind the plate and bat eighth.
May 9 2025Herrera is starting at designated hitter and batting sixth in Friday's game against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's Herrera's first game with the Cardinals in more than a month as he returns from a left knee bone bruise. While Herrera will see the bulk of the reps at catcher against right-handed pitching, he could be the primary DH versus lefties after the previous holder of that title -- Luken Baker -- was optioned to Triple-A Memphis. The Nationals are starting southpaw Mitchell Parker in Friday's series opener.
May 8 2025The Cardinals are expected to activate Herrera (knee) from the 10-day injured list prior to Friday's contest against the Nationals, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera has gone 9-for-23 with one home run and one double in six rehab games with Triple-A Memphis, splitting reps between catcher and designated hitter. Luken Baker has been optioned to Memphis, which frees up Herrera to DH against left-handers in addition to catching as the Cardinals ease him back into action following a month-long absence with a left knee bone bruise.
May 6 2025Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Tuesday that Herrera (knee) could be activated from the 10-day injured list during the team's road trip that begins Friday, John Denton of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera has gone 6-for-14 with one home run and one double in his first four rehab games with Triple-A Memphis and will catch seven innings in his fifth rehab contest Tuesday. It sounds like the catcher might be back as soon as Friday's game against the Nationals. He's been out since April 6 with a left knee bone bruise.
May 2 2025Herrera (knee) clubbed a three-run home run in his first rehab game with Triple-A Memphis on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Serving as Memphis' designated hitter, Herrera was retired in his first three plate appearances but then went deep in his final trip to the dish. He will catch five innings Friday and keep building up his defensive workload from there before rejoining the Cardinals' active roster.
May 1 2025The Cardinals want Herrera (knee) to catch back-to-back games and get his timing down at the plate on his rehab assignment at Triple-A Memphis before he's activated from the 10-day injured list, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera will begin his rehab assignment Thursday with a full game at designated hitter before playing five innings at catcher Friday. He will have to increase his workload and catch back-to-back contests before rejoining the Cardinals' active roster, suggesting Herrera is probably at least a week or so away from returning.
Apr 30 2025Herrera (knee) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis on Thursday, John Denton of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera is slated to serve as Memphis' designated hitter for five innings Thursday and then catch for them Friday. The Cardinals haven't revealed how many rehab games Herrera will play, but a return from the 10-day injured list sometime next week seems likely as long as he doesn't suffered any setbacks. Herrera has been shelved since early April with a left knee bone bruise.
