Jun 2 2025Butto earned a save against the Dodgers on Monday, retiring both batters he faced in the 10th inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mets closer Edwin Diaz blew a save in the ninth frame, so New York needed to go to a different reliever after scoring twice in the top of the 10th. Manager Carlos Mendoza initially called upon Jose Castillo, but he retired just one batter while allowing two Dodgers to reach base. Mendoza then turned to Butto, who got pinch hitter Will Smith to fly out before retiring Tommy Edman on a groundout with the tying run on third base. Butto came into Monday having given up four runs over four innings across his previous four outings, and he's not a threat to Diaz's role as closer, especially since the latter has been great this season -- Monday marked Diaz's first blown save of the campaign.
Mar 17 2025Butto (groin) is listed as an available relief option for Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Rays, Manny Gomez of NJ.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Butto hasn't made any appearances since March 7 while tending to a minor groin injury, but after throwing a bullpen session over the weekend without issue, he looks like he'll be incorporated into the Mets' spring pitching schedule Monday. The 26-year-old right-hander should have an inside track on a spot in New York's Opening Day bullpen after submitting a 2.55 ERA and 1.07 WHIP while striking out 79 batters over 74 innings during the regular season in 2024.
Mar 14 2025Butto has been sitting out due to a minor groin injury but is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Friday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander made four appearances in spring training prior to the injury and gave up a run on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks over 3.2 innings. Assuming Butto is able to avoid a setback, it doesn't appear the injury will affect his availability for Opening Day.
Feb 11 2025Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Tuesday that Butto will remain in the team's bullpen, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Butto made seven starts for the Mets in 2024 and has been a starter throughout his time in the minors, but he found his niche in the bullpen down the stretch last season, collecting a 2.00 ERA and 41:17 K:BB over 36 regular-season innings. The righty will be tasked with getting some key outs in a setup role.
Aug 31 2024Butto earned a save against the White Sox on Saturday, allowed one run on three hits in one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mets held a three-run lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning and turned to Butto to close things down. The right-hander didn't cruise, giving up a run on a trio of hits and allowing the tying run to reach first base, but he was ultimately successful in converting his third save of the campaign. Butto isn't a threat to Edwin Diaz's role as closer; Diaz was simply unavailable after pitching on three straight days.
Aug 30 2024Butto (6-3) picked up the win Thursday, walking one batter in a scoreless inning of relief. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander threw only nine of 20 pitches for strikes but escaped the eighth inning unscathed to protect a 2-2 tie, and Butto became the pitcher of record when the Mets went ahead in the top of the ninth. He's had trouble finding the plate consistently for a couple weeks now, and Butto has walked at least one batter in six straight appearances, posting a 4.32 ERA, 1.92 WHIP and 9:7 K:BB in 8.1 innings over that stretch. Given the injuries in the Mets' bullpen however, with Dedniel Nunez (forearm) the latest to go down, Butto will likely continue to be deployed in high-leverage spots.
Jul 30 2024Butto gave up a run on four hits and a walk over three innings to record his second save of the season in Monday's win over the Twins. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 26-year-old righty gave the rest of the Mets' bullpen a breather in a 15-2 rout, firing 44 pitches (27 strikes) to close things out. Butto has thrown at least 40 pitches in three of his last five appearances, posting a 1.54 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 16:4 K:BB in 11.2 innings over that stretch. If New York can't bring in rotation reinforcements at Tuesday's trade deadline, it wouldn't be a surprise if Butto gets stretched back out for a starting role.
Jul 10 2024Butto earned a save against the Nationals on Wednesday, striking out two batters over 1.1 perfect innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Butto entered in the top of the eighth inning with a runner on base and two outs. He retired Lane Thomas on a strikeout to keep the Mets ahead 5-2, then watched as New York added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame. Since closer Edwin Diaz would no longer be entering in a save situation, Butto remained in the contest for the ninth and retired all three batters he faced to clinch his first save as a major-leaguer. The right-hander's first seven outings this season came as a starter, but he's now made three appearances out of the bullpen since being called up July 2 and has picked up two wins and Wednesday's save while tossing five scoreless frames.
Jul 2 2024The Mets recalled Butto from Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All seven of Butto's 2024 appearances with the Mets to this point have come as a starting pitcher, but he will be used in relief this time around in order to provide some length for an overused bullpen. The right-hander has collected a 3.08 ERA and 38:21 K:BB over 38 innings in the majors this season.
Jun 25 2024Butto could make a spot start for the Mets prior to the All-Star break, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Edwin Diaz's 10-game suspension could force the team to get creative when it comes to keeping the bullpen fresh. One possibility would be to option David Peterson and Tylor Megill down to Triple-A Syracuse after their next starts, replacing them with relief arms. In that scenario, Butto and Christian Scott would be needed to make spot starts when those turns in the rotation come around again. Butto has allowed two runs or less in five of six starts for Syracuse since being sent down in May, posting a 3.06 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 31:12 K:BB through 32.1 innings over that stretch -- ratios that are almost an exact match for those he's generated at the big-league level this season.
May 15 2024The Mets optioned Butto to Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Butto mostly pitched well in seven starts for the Mets, but he's had trouble throwing strikes in his last five outings, walking 17 over 26 innings. With Adrian Houser and/or Tylor Megill (shoulder) possibly rejoining the rotation soon, the Mets have elected to send Butto back to Syracuse.
May 14 2024Butto (1-3) took the loss Tuesday against the Phillies, allowing two runs on one hit and four walks over five innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Butto was sharp for most of the day, though he hit a rough patch in the third inning -- the right-hander loaded the bases with two outs before hitting Alec Bohm with a pitch and walking Brandon Marsh. The two runs proved to be more than enough to stick Butto with the loss, as the Mets couldn't get anything going against Aaron Nola in a 4-0 shutout defeat. The 26-year-old Butto's allowed just six runs in his last three starts (16 innings), though he's gone 1-2 in that span. Overall, his ERA sits at a solid 3.08 through his first 38 innings this year with a 1.13 WHIP and 38:21 K:BB. Butto's currently in line for a road start early next week against the Guardians.
May 8 2024Butto (1-2) got the win Tuesday over the Cardinals, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Butto got off to a rocky start, surrendering a leadoff home run to Brendan Donovan and another two runs in the opening frame. He was able to settle in the rest of the way, tossing four shutout innings despite having shaky command all night. Butto only threw 47 out of 89 pitches for strikes and walked multiple batters for a fourth straight start while his three punchouts were a season low. Butto owns a 3.00 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 34:17 K:BB in 33 innings and tentatively lines up for a rough start against the Phillies early next week.
May 1 2024Butto (0-2) took the loss against the Cubs on Wednesday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out six batters over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Butto pitched well in the outing, notching his third quality start of the campaign and racking up 15 swinging strikes. However, he was outshined by impressive rookie Shota Imanaga, who had another dazzling performance with seven scoreless frames. Despite the loss, Wednesday's effort should continue to keep Butto's name on the minds of fantasy managers who are looking to improve their rotation. Though the right-hander doesn't have overpowering stuff, he's impressed so far this season, posting a 2.57 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 31:14 K:BB over 28 innings.
Apr 27 2024Butto (0-1) took the loss Friday as the Mets fell, 4-2, to the Cardinals, giving up four runs on four hits and three walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Homers by Alec Burleson in the second inning and Willson Contreras in the third accounted for all the damage off Butto, and were the first long balls he's served up this season. The right-hander tossed 94 pitches (56 strikes) before exiting, and while his 2.86 ERA and 1.09 WHIP through 22 innings look sharp, he's walking a tightrope with his control and command -- Butto has issued at least three walks in three of his four starts, and he's hit a batter with a pitch in three straight. The 26-year-old will look for his first win of 2024 when he takes the mound next week at home against the Cubs.
Apr 20 2024Butto came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 6-4 win over the Dodgers, giving up two runs on three hits and five walks over 4.1 innings while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander threw only 47 of 95 pitches for strikes, but he was able to limit the damage. Butto was coming off back-to-back quality starts, so one shaky performance shouldn't jeopardize his spot in the rotation, but he now has a 21:9 K:BB through his first 16.1 big-league innings this season to go along with his 1.65 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. He'll look to sharpen his control in his next outing, which lines up to come next weekend at home against the Cardinals.
