Jun 26 2025Olson (finger) struck out five and allowed two earned runs on three hits and one walk across four innings Wednesday in his rehab start for Triple-A Toledo. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson spotted 49 of his 74 pitches for strikes and sported a fastball that sat between 92 and 94 miles per hour on the day, about a tick behind his average velocity prior to landing on the injured list May 19 due to right ring finger inflammation. Though the 25-year-old didn't reach five innings in any of his three rehab outings with Toledo, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said that all reports on Olson were positive coming out of his start Wednesday, per Chris McCosky of The Detroit News. Olson is likely to return to Detroit this weekend to complete a bullpen session, and if he continues to check out fine, he could be activated from the IL to make his next start with the big club Tuesday or Wednesday in Washington.
Jun 22 2025Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Friday that Olson (finger) is expected to require one more rehab start before being activated from the 15-day injured list, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detroit optioned No. 5 starter Keider Montero to Triple-A Toledo on Friday, but that apparently won't be a precursor to Olson being activated during the upcoming week. Instead, Olson will most likely make his third rehab start for Toledo this Tuesday or Wednesday, and if he checks out fine, he'll presumably be activated from the IL during the first week of July. Olson, who has been on the shelf since May 19 due to right ring finger inflammation, most recently tossed 3.2 scoreless innings and 58 pitches for Toledo on Thursday, allowing three hits and no walks while striking out five.
Jun 13 2025Olson (finger) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Saturday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson has been sidelined since May 19 due to right ring finger inflammation, but he's about to embark on the final step of his recovery. General manager Jeff Greenberg said Sunday that he's "cautiously optimistic" that Olson will return from the injured list "sooner rather than later," though he may require multiple appearances at Triple-A before being cleared to join the big-league club.
Jun 10 2025Olson (finger) threw a bullpen session Saturday without issue, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson didn't throw his changeup during the session, as his inflamed right ring finger is still preventing him from using his full arsenal in workouts. That said, general manager Jeff Greenberg noted Sunday that he's "cautiously optimistic" that Olson will return from the injured list "sooner rather than later." Olson could be ready to mix in his changeup during his next throwing session, and if that goes well, he could advance to facing hitters in live batting practice.
Jun 3 2025Olson received an injection to address the inflammation in his right ring finger Monday and is expected to resume playing catch Thursday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander landed on the shelf with the injury May 19, and the inflammation apparently returned after he was briefly shut down from throwing. Olson is without an official timeline for his return but will likely be out for at least a couple more weeks as he ramps his throwing program back up.
May 31 2025Olson (finger) was scheduled to throw another bullpen session Saturday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson has now thrown a pair of bullpen sessions within the past four days as he continues to ramp back up after being placed on the injured list May 19 due to right ring finger inflammation. Though the right-hander doesn't look to be in line for an extended stay on the IL, he'll still need to face hitters in live batting practice and potentially complete a brief minor-league rehab assignment prior to being activated.
May 27 2025Olson (finger) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He threw off flat ground for the first time Thursday and will advance his rehab Wednesday with a bullpen session. Olson has been out since May 17 with right ring finger inflammation.
May 22 2025Olson (finger) threw on flat ground Thursday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Thursday marks the first time Olson has done any sort of throwing since he landed on the injured list Monday with inflammation in his right ring finger. The right-hander is confident that he won't need to spend much more than the 15-day minimum on the IL, though he'll need to start throwing off a mound soon for that to be a realistic possibility.
May 19 2025The Tigers placed Olson on the 15-day injured list Monday with a right ring finger injury, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's not clear when or how Olson was injured, but he showed no signs of being hurt his last time out Saturday against the Blue Jays, tossing six scoreless innings. The timing is poor, as the right-hander has logged a 1.60 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 38:11 K:BB through 33.2 innings over his last six starts. Olson will be eligible for activation June 2, but it's uncertain whether he'll be ready on that date.
May 17 2025Olson came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 2-1 loss to the Blue Jays, scattering one hit and one walk over six scoreless innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander faced only one batter above the minimum and didn't let a Toronto runner get past first base in his third quality start of the season, but Olson saw his fifth win of the year slip away when the Detroit bullpen fell apart late. He's blanked the opposition in four of his last six trips to the mound, posting a 1.60 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 38:11 K:BB through 33.2 innings over that stretch. Olson will look to keep rolling in his next start, which lines up to come at home next week against the Guardians.
May 11 2025Olson (4-3) took the loss against the Rangers on Sunday, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk with five strikeouts over four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson surrendered a two-run homer in the second inning, and then yielded another run in the third. It was the 25-year-old's shortest outing of the season, as he generated only eight whiffs on 83 pitches and dealt with frequent traffic on the basepaths. He'll carry a 3.38 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 45:18 K:BB across 42.2 innings into a road matchup with the Blue Jays next weekend.
May 5 2025Olson (4-2) got the win over the Angels on Sunday, tossing 5.2 scoreless innings while allowing three hits and three walks. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson posted his third scoreless start this season of at least five innings. Sunday was also his third straight start with at least seven strikeouts, as his swing-and-miss stuff has taken a noticeable jump from last season. Over his last four outings, Olson has a 1.14 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 27:9 K:BB in 23.2 innings. He lines up for a home matchup against the Rangers in his next start.
Apr 17 2025Olson (2-1) earned the win against the Royals on Thursday, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out five across five scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson allowed at least two baserunners in two of the five frames he pitched, but he managed to get out of those innings without yielding a run. The 25-year-old right-hander has won four straight games at Comerica Park dating back to the 2024 regular season, and through his first four starts in 2025 he's posted a 4.50 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 18:10 K:BB across 20 innings. Olson's next start is slated for next week at home against the Padres.
Apr 11 2025Olson allowed four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three over 4.1 innings, taking a no-decision Friday versus the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson was doing fine initially, but the Twins put together a three-run tally in the fifth inning that chased him from the game. The right-hander finished with 90 pitches (48 strikes), and he's failed to complete five innings twice in three starts so far. He's pitched to a 6.00 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 13:8 K:BB over 15 innings. Getting the walk rate down closer to his career-average mark coming into the season (2.8 BB/9) will go a long way to getting the rest of his numbers in line. Olson's next start is projected to be at Milwaukee next week.
Apr 5 2025Olson (1-1) picked up the win Saturday, allowing two runs on seven hits and three walks over six innings in a 7-2 victory over the White Sox. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander had trouble harnessing his control, tossing only 52 of 94 pitches for strikes, but he got plenty of run support and held on long enough to record his first quality start and victory of 2025. Olson has had a bumpy start to his season, posting a 5.06 ERA and 10:5 K:BB through his first 10.2 innings. He's scheduled to make his next outing on the road next weekend in Minnesota.
Mar 29 2025Olson (0-1) took the loss against the Dodgers on Saturday, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five batters over 4.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson allowed a tolerable six baserunners -- including one on an intentional walk -- in his 4.2 innings, but three of the four hits against him went for extra bases. He entered the fifth frame holding his own in a 2-2 tie, but a two-out, two-run double by Teoscar Hernandez marred Olson's stat line and lined him up to take the loss. The right-hander did manage to notch five strikeouts and get 10 whiffs, so there were some positives to take away despite the defeat. Olson's second start of the campaign is tentatively scheduled to be a considerably softer matchup against the White Sox next weekend.
Mar 24 2025Olson allowed two runs on four hits across 5.1 innings in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. He walked two and struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson wrapped up a solid spring slate in which he recorded a 4.30 ERA and 13 strikeouts across 14.2 innings. The righty is in line to serve as Detroit's No. 3 starter this season behind Tarik Skubal and Jack Flaherty, with his debut likely coming on Saturday against the Dodgers on the road. Olson has posted sub-4.00 ERAs in each of his first two MLB campaigns, though he's a risky play against the loaded Los Angeles lineup.
Mar 5 2025Olson tossed three scoreless innings in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. He allowed one hit and struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson's second spring start was better than his first, when he allowed two solo home runs across two innings of work. The righty has been a nice find for the Tigers, as he posted sub-4.00 ERAs in each of his first two seasons with the team, including a 3.53 ERA in 2024 across a career-high 112.1 innings. Olson isn't flashy, but he should be a steady option as Detroit's No. 3 starter this year behind Tarik Skubal and Jack Flaherty.
Oct 10 2024Olson will start Thursday in Game 4 of the ALDS against the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Tigers used an opener ahead of Olson in Game 1 of the series, but he will be given a traditional start Thursday as Detroit looks to close out the series. Olson struck out four while allowing just one run over five innings in Game 1.
Sep 27 2024Olson allowed two runs on four hits across four innings and did not factor into the decision Friday against the Rays. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson pitched decently enough but was limited to only 72 pitches in his third start back from a shoulder injury. It's an improvement from the 58 pitches and three innings he logged in his last outing Saturday. With just three games left in the regular season, Olson is not slated to take the mound again, though he figures to factor into Detroit's playoff plans if the team is able to secure its spot over the weekend. The 25-year-old had a solid campaign overall, posting a 3.53 ERA and 1.18 WHIP while recording 101 strikeouts across 112.1 innings.
Sep 21 2024Olson did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 6-4 win over the Orioles, allowing one run on one hit and one walk while striking out three over three innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson lasted 2.1 innings on 50 pitches in his first start back from a shoulder injury, so he improved upon that by getting through three frames on 58 pitches Saturday. Olson has a 3.49 ERA and 1.19 WHIP across 108.1 innings this season. The 25-year-old will wrap up his sophomore season with a home start against the Rays next week.
Sep 16 2024Olson did not factor into the decision in Monday's 7-6 win over the Royals, allowing four runs on four hits and one walk with three strikeouts over 2.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson retired the first six batters he faced but hit a wall in the third, loading the bases and surrendering a grand slam to Bobby Witt. The 25-year-old threw 29 of 50 pitches for strikes and was on a limited workload after missing nearly two months with a shoulder injury. On the season, he owns a 3.50 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 95:32 K:BB across 105.1 innings and lines up for a road matchup with the Orioles this weekend.
Sep 15 2024Olson (shoulder) could be lined up to be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Monday against the Royals, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Prior reports had suggested that the 25-year-old was trending toward a return early this week in Kansas City, and Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal have been named the probable starters for Tuesday's and Wednesday's contests, respectively. Detroit hasn't officially announced a starter for Monday, but Olson appears primed to make his return after missing nearly two months due to a shoulder strain. He made a pair of rehab starts and most recent tossed three shutout innings and 45 pitches for Triple-A Toledo this past Tuesday, so Olson could be somewhat limited from a workload perspective if he toes the rubber for Detroit on Monday.
Sep 13 2024Olson (shoulder) is trending towards returning early next week in Kansas City, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McCosky hints than an announcement will come Saturday, and given that Tarik Skubal has been confirmed to start Wednesday, that leaves Monday or Tuesday as potential dates for Olson to make his return to the rotation. He struck out five across three scoreless frames in his rehab start Tuesday for Triple-A Toledo.
Sep 10 2024Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Olson (shoulder) will rejoin the major-league club to be evaluated after a successful rehab start Tuesday with Triple-A Toledo, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander threw 45 pitches across three scoreless innings Tuesday, which is only a minor increase from the 39 pitches and two innings he tossed during his first rehab outing Sept. 5. Hinch mentioned the possibility of a third rehab start, but the next steps in Olson's rehab won't be determined until he's checked out back with the big club.
Sep 5 2024Olson (shoulder) allowed one hit and one walk while striking out one across two scoreless innings in a rehab outing with Triple-A Toledo on Thursday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This marked Olson's first game activity since landing on the injured list July 21 and he ramped up to 39 pitches, 24 of which went for strikes. He averaged 94 mph on his fastball -- in line with his norms for the season -- and threw all of his pitches. Olson will still require a couple more rehab assignments, but a return in late September appears realistic.
Aug 30 2024Olson (shoulder) will throw live batting practice Saturday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson was cleared for mound work Aug. 21 and has now advanced to facing live hitters. The right-hander will likely require a minor-league rehab stint, though it's unclear if he'll have enough time to get fully stretched out and rejoin the rotation.
Aug 23 2024Olson is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Saturday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson threw off a mound Wednesday for the first time since being placed on the injured list July 21 due to a right shoulder strain. The 24-year-old is slated for another side session Saturday. He's still expected to be sidelined for multiple weeks, but he seems to be progressing well.
Aug 20 2024Olson (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wednesday will mark Olson's first time throwing off a mound since landing on the injured list in late July, as he had been limited to playing catch off flat ground up to this point. He'll presumably need to throw several additional bullpen sessions before progressing to live batting practice and eventually a minor-league rehab assignment, but there should still be enough time left in the season for the 25-year-old to return to the Tigers' rotation, barring any setbacks.
Aug 11 2024The Tigers announced Friday that Olson (shoulder) continues to make progress in his throwing distance and volume off flat ground, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While the fact that Olson isn't shut down from throwing can be taken as a positive sign, the Tigers haven't offered any indication that he's close to a return from the 15-day injured list after being deactivated July 21 due to a right shoulder strain. With approximately six weeks left in the regular season, Olson will probably need to advance to throwing bullpen sessions and facing hitters in the next two weeks in order to have sufficient time to get stretched back out as a starter. Before landing on the shelf, Olson had been a pleasant surprise for the Tigers and fantasy managers alike through his first 19 starts of the season, logging a 3.23 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 92:31 K:BB across 103 innings.
Jul 23 2024Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Tuesday that Olson's right shoulder injury is considered mild after the pitcher underwent further testing, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson was removed early in his start Saturday against the Blue Jays and was subsequently placed on the 15-day injured list with what was referred to as a right shoulder strain. The good news is that Olson appears to have avoided structural damage, though a timetable for his return remains unclear.
Jul 21 2024The Tigers placed Olson on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a right shoulder strain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson's move to the IL comes one day after he was removed from his start in the Tigers' 7-3 win over the Blue Jays due to what the team had classified as right shoulder soreness. Follow-up testing evidently revealed that Olson had suffered a strain, and the diagnosis leaves the 24-year-old with an uncertain timeline for a return from the shelf. Olson's injury now creates two openings in the Detroit rotation, as Casey Mize (hamstring) was placed on the IL earlier this month.
Jul 20 2024Olson was removed from Saturday's outing against the Blue Jays as a result of right shoulder soreness. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson threw two scoreless innings, allowing one hit while walking two batters prior to exiting the contest having thrown 30 total pitches. Considering the soreness is in his throwing shoulder, Olson is an obvious candidate for a potential stint on the injured list, but more information on his status will likely come in the near future.
Jul 10 2024Olson (4-8) earned the win against the Guardians on Wednesday, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk with three strikeouts over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson allowed two runs in the third inning and a solo homer in the fourth but rebounded with two scoreless frames before departing at 95 pitches. The righty has now logged quality starts in four of his past five outings and registered consecutive victories for the first time this season. He will take a 3.30 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 92:29 K:BB into the All-Star break.
Jul 6 2024Olson (3-8) allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits over 5.2 innings to earn the win Friday against the Reds. He walked two and struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Reese's record isn't great, he's actually pitched quite well this season with a 3.22 ERA. The righty has been even better lately, posting a 1.88 ERA with 28 strikeouts across 24 innings in his last four starts. Olson was solid as a rookie last year, posting a 3.99 ERA over 21 games (18 starts), so it looks like he firmly belongs at this level. He'll look to keep up his strong recent play in his next scheduled start, which is penciled in for Wednesday against the Guardians.
Jun 30 2024Olson allowed two runs on five hits across six innings and did not factor into the decision in Saturday's contest against the Angels. He walked three and struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The nine strikeouts are a new season high, though the three walks also matched a season high, as Olson was all over the place Saturday. He still managed a solid outing overall despite missing out on his third win of the year. The righty's 2-8 record isn't fitting of his 3.32 ERA and 1.20 WHIP across 89.1 innings this season. Olson will look for a little better luck and some more run support in his next scheduled start, which is penciled in for Friday against the Reds.
Jun 23 2024Olson (2-8) earned the win after he pitched 6.1 innings, surrendering two runs on four hits while striking out three batters in Sunday's 11-2 win over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson tossed six scoreless frames before running into some trouble in the top of the seventh, ultimately exiting the game with one out and runners on second and third. Both runs came around to score on a two-out single by Nicky Lopez off reliever Will Vest. Nonetheless, Olson has now recorded back-to-back quality starts after a three-start stretch during which he gave up 17 earned runs over 14.2 innings to open June. The right-hander will carry a 3.35 ERA into his next projected start Friday on the road against the Angels.
Jun 17 2024Olson allowed four hits over six shutout innings in a no-decision Monday. He struck out eight during the loss to Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson spread four hits across a quality start and never faced much of a threat. It was a much-needed rebound performance after he'd gone 0-3 with a brutal 10.43 ERA over his previous three starts. He generated 16 whiffs Monday, including seven via the changeup. It was his highest total since forcing a season-high 17 on April 15. Olson is now sporting a 3.39 ERA with a 69:23 K:BB through 77 innings. His next start is projected to be at home against the White Sox.
Jun 12 2024Olson (1-8) allowed five runs (four earned) on 10 hits across 5.1 innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Nationals. He walked two and struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Although this wasn't as bad as his last outing, when he allowed eight runs on 12 hits over four innings, this still wasn't a great performance from Olson. The righty has now sustained losses in his last three starts, and he has a 10.43 ERA during the rough stretch. It's quite a reversal for Olson, as he had a 1.92 ERA across his first 10 appearances of the season. Fantasy managers will hope he gets back on track in his next scheduled start, which is tentatively set for Monday against a tough Atlanta lineup on the road.
Jun 7 2024Olson (1-7) took the loss Friday against Milwaukee, allowing eight runs on 12 hits and a walk over four innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a brutal night for Olson, who was tagged for a career-high eight runs. The 24-year-old right-hander has now allowed 13 runs over 9.1 innings in his last two outings after holding opponents to one earned run or fewer in each of his previous six outings. Overall, Olson sports a 3.43 ERA with a 1.20 WHIP and 58:22 K:BB across 65.2 innings. He'll look to get back on track in his next start, currently scheduled for next week at home against the Nationals.
Jun 2 2024Olson (1-6) took the loss Saturday as the Tigers fell 6-3 to the Red Sox, giving up five runs on six hits and a walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He was able to handle most of Boston's lineup, but Enmanuel Valdez proved to be his kryptonite, smacking a double and two homers off Olson. The right-hander had gone eight straight outings without allowing more than two earned runs heading into Saturday, and despite the stumble Olson will take a 2.48 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 52:20 K:BB through 61.2 innings into his next start, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the Brewers.
May 25 2024Olson (1-5) picked up the win in Saturday's 2-1 victory over the Blue Jays, allowing just an unearned run on three hits and three walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kerry Carpenter launched a two-run homer in the first inning, and it proved to be all the offense that Olson and the Tigers bullpen would need. The right-hander generated 30 called or swinging strikes among his 93 pitches, and while the win was his first of the season, the quality start was his fifth in 10 outings. Olson will take a 1.92 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 47:19 K:BB through 56.1 innings into his next start, which is scheduled to come on the road next weekend in Boston.
May 24 2024Olson (hip) is listed as the Tigers' probable starter for Saturday's game against the Blue Jays, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 24-year-old exited his start Monday against the Royals with a bruised hip after being struck by a comebacker, but he's ready for his next turn through the rotation. Olson has enjoyed a nice start to the campaign with a 2.16 ERA over 50 innings, but he's been particularly effective across his past five starts with just three earned runs allowed.
May 22 2024Olson (hip) is slated to throw a bullpen session Thursday and is on track to make his scheduled start this weekend against the Blue Jays, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Tigers initially said Olson would throw off a mound Wednesday, but he'll end up having his bullpen session pushed back a day. Olson exited his start in the third inning Monday against the Royals after being struck on the right hip by a comebacker. Detroit fully expects the righty to be ready for his start this weekend, but he'll need to get through Thursday's mound session before he's locked in for his next turn through the rotation.
May 21 2024Olson (hip) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson had to make an early exit from his start Monday against the Royals after taking a comebacker off his right hip. The right-hander managed to escape the incident with nothing more than a bruise, but the Tigers will have him throw a bullpen session to make sure Olson will be able to make his next scheduled start Saturday against Toronto.
May 20 2024Olson has been diagnosed with a bruised right hip after being struck by a comebacker during Monday's start against Kansas City. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson appears to have escaped with a minor injury, though the team will closely monitor him over the next few days. His next start tentatively lines up for Saturday against the Blue Jays, and the club should have clarity on his upcoming availability later in the week. Olson noted after the game that he expects to be fine, and he was already moving around better, per Chris McCosky of The Detroit News.
May 14 2024Olson did not factor into the decision Tuesday despite allowing just three hits over eight scoreless innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Olson was spectacular Tuesday, he was matched on the other side by Ryan Weathers, who also delivered eight scoreless frames in an eventual 1-0 Marlins win in 10 innings. Olson has held opponents to one run or fewer in four straight starts and five of his last six outings. His ERA is down to 2.09 on the year with a 0.99 WHIP and 41:15 K:BB across 47.1 innings. Still, Olson's been incredibly unlucky to open his sophomore campaign, as he's yet to earn a win through eight starts. He'll hope for more support in his next outing, currently scheduled for early next week in Kansas City.
May 8 2024Olson did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Guardians, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit and two walks over six innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was another excellent outing from Olson, though he was ultimately stuck with the no-decision despite allowing just one hit, as the Tigers' bullpen couldn't protect a 4-2 lead. Olson is 0-4 on the year despite holding opponents to one earned run or fewer in five of his seven starts. He lowered his ERA to 2.52 with a 1.12 WHIP and 35:15 K:BB across 39.1 innings. Olson will look for better luck in his next turn in the rotation, currently scheduled for early next week against Miami.
May 4 2024Olson tossed five scoreless innings but did not factor into the decision in Friday's game against the Yankees. He allowed two hits and two walks while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson was sharp against a strong New York lineup, but the Tigers couldn't provide enough run support in the eventual 2-1 loss. Olson has been dialed in over his last four starts, compiling a 1.54 ERA and striking out 25 batters across 23.1 innings, but he has an 0-3 record to show for it. The strong run has at least lowered his season ERA to a tidy 2.70. The righty will look to keep pitching well and hopefully get a bit more run support in his next appearance, which is tentatively set for Wednesday against the Guardians.
Apr 26 2024Olson (0-4) took the loss Friday against the Royals after he allowed one run on three hits and three walks over seven innings. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander allowed a run on two hits, a walk and a sacrifice fly during the third inning but otherwise kept Kansas City off the board. It wasn't enough to prevent Olson's fourth straight loss, however, as Detroit was shut out for the third time this season. Despite the ugly record, the 24-year-old has a strong 3.18 ERA through five starts, though a 1.31 WHIP and 26:11 K:BB aren't quite as attractive.
Apr 20 2024Olson (0-3) was charged with four runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks over five innings in a losing effort against the Twins on Saturday. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Olson fanned two in a scoreless first inning, but the Twins then got to him for runs in the second, third and fifth frames. Only two of the runs were earned, and Olson continues to show flashes with his changeup and breaking pitches, but his fastball has been too hittable and the results remain inconsistent. The 24-year-old will take a 3.80 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 18:8 K:BB over 21.1 innings into his next start, projected for next weekend at home against the Royals.
