Jun 30 2025Kirby (2-4) allowed one run on three hits and struck out five without walking a batter over six innings to earn the win over the Royals on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby threw 60 of 85 pitches for strikes in a dominant performance. He allowed two runs or less in five of his six starts in June, and he also walked one batter or fewer in five of those outings. It's a return to form for the steady right-hander, though his poor first two starts of the year are still weighing on his 4.85 ERA and 1.17 WHIP for the year, though his 41:9 K:BB over 42.2 innings is sharp. Kirby is projected for a favorable home matchup versus the Pirates this weekend.
Jun 25 2025Kirby (1-4) was saddled with the loss Wednesday against the Twins, giving up one run on three hits and one walk in six innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old right-hander surrendered a season-low one run, and he even fired 3.2 hitless innings to begin the outing. Minnesota scratched a run across via a Willi Castro single in the sixth frame, but it was still nonetheless one of Kirby's finer efforts so far this year. He's still trying to find a rhythm following a delayed start to the season with a shoulder injury, as evidenced by his 5.40 ERA through his first 36.2 innings, but he does carry a solid 36:9 K:BB and 1.28 WHIP ahead of his next scheduled matchup versus a Royals team with a .664 OPS this year.
Jun 20 2025Kirby did not factor into the decision in Friday's 9-4 win against the Cubs, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk with three strikeouts over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby was tagged for three runs in the first inning before mostly settling down over his next four frames. He threw 60 of 85 pitches for strikes but gave up two homers, bringing his season total to seven in six outings. The 27-year-old has had mixed results since returning from the injured list May 22, allowing exactly two earned runs in three starts while surrendering a combined 15 earned runs in the other three. He'll carry a 6.16 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 33:8 K:BB across 30.2 innings into a road matchup with the Twins next week.
Jun 14 2025Kirby allowed two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five over five innings in a no-decision versus the Guardians on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The three walks were a season high, contributing to his fairly early exit. Kirby needed 101 pitches (63 strikes) to get through five frames, which was a bit of a letdown after his 14-strikeout performance in his previous start versus the Angels. Kirby has been middling so far with a 5.96 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 30:7 K:BB across 25.2 innings over five starts after beginning the year sidelined by shoulder inflammation. He is lined up to make his next start on the road versus the Cubs.
Jun 8 2025Kirby (1-3) picked up the win Sunday against the Angels, allowing two runs on two hits and no walks with 14 strikeouts over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby set a career high in strikeouts Sunday, besting his previous record of 12 and marking his fifth career start with double-digit Ks. The only damage against Kirby came in the fourth inning, when Taylor Ward swatted a two-run home run. Kirby's performance should allow fantasy managers to take a sigh of relief, as the historically reliable 27-year-old tallied an 8.57 ERA over his first three starts this season. He's tentatively scheduled to face the Guardians next time out.
Jun 7 2025Kirby (jaw) is listed as the Mariners' probable starter for Sunday's game against the Angels in Anaheim. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In his most recent start Tuesday against the Orioles, Kirby covered five innings but was struck in his hand and then his jaw while knocking down a line drive off the bat of Ramon Urias. Though Kirby didn't return to the contest after retiring Urias on the play, the right-hander's exit likely had more to do with the fact that he had already tossed 95 pitches. Mariners manager Dan Wilson confirmed after the game that he expected Kirby to be fine, and the 27-year-old seems to have made it through his between-starts bullpen session without incident. Kirby will head into Sunday's contest with an 0-3 record, 8.56 ERA, 1.83 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB in three starts since making his return from the injured list May 22.
Jun 3 2025Manager Dan Wilson said after Tuesday's game that he expects Kirby to be fine after getting hit in the face by a line drive, Andrew Destin of the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Seattle's skipper added that Ramon Urias' 103-mph line drive in the fifth inning initially struck Kirby's hand before deflecting off his jaw, which likely lessened the impact. The 27-year-old righty is slated to be further evaluated Wednesday, at which point the Mariners will have more information about his condition, though Wilson's comments suggest Kirby still has a good chance to make his next start -- tentatively scheduled to come Sunday against the Angels. Kirby ended up taking the loss Tuesday -- dropping to 0-3 on the year -- after giving up two earned runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out three batters in five innings.
May 29 2025Kirby (0-2) took the loss against Washington on Wednesday, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four batters over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby was hit hard in the outing -- four of the Nationals' seven hits against him went for extra bases, and three of those left the yard. The right-hander did go a little deeper with five innings after completing just 3.2 frames against Houston in his season debut May 22, but he's struggled in both outings and has now given up 11 runs through 8.2 innings this season. It's understandable that Kirby has some rust after missing nearly the first two months of the season with a shoulder injury, but his return to action has been frustrating for fantasy managers who held onto the hurler throughout his time on the IL. Kirby at least has a promising matchup lined up for him next, as he's tentatively scheduled to face the Orioles, who have scored the seventh-fewest runs in MLB so far this season.
May 22 2025Kirby (0-1) allowed five runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four over 3.2 innings to take the loss Thursday versus the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby missed over a quarter of the season while dealing with right shoulder inflammation. He was on a pitch count Thursday, but he had some rust to shake off, struggling the second time through the Houston order. The Astros tied the game with two runs in the third inning and added three more in the fourth. Kirby threw 49 of 72 pitches for strikes and should be able to push closer to 80-to-85 pitches for his second start. Once he's up to speed, Kirby should be back to being an efficient pitcher who relies on excellent command to limit damage. He is projected to make his next start at home versus the Nationals.
May 21 2025Mariners manager Dan Wilson said Wednesday that Kirby (shoulder) will be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Thursday's game in Houston, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby's third and final rehab start wasn't great from a results perspective, as he allowed four runs on 10 hits over four innings of work at Triple-A Tacoma last Friday. However, he got his fastball velocity up to 97.5 miles per hour in the outing, and the Mariners are convinced the right-hander is ready to face big-league hitters. Kirby threw 64 pitches in his final rehab outing, so he will be working with a relatively limited workload Thursday. He's been out all season while recovering from right shoulder inflammation.
May 18 2025Kirby (shoulder) said Sunday that he's ready to rejoin the Mariners after making his third rehab start Friday, though a decision has yet to be made on whether he'll require another outing in the minors before being activated from the injured list, Adam Jude of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander's personal attitude is encouraging, but Seattle could still elect to send him for another rehab start after he threw 64 pitches and allowed four runs on 10 hits across four innings Friday. Kirby has been on the shelf all season due to shoulder inflammation, but he appears to be on the cusp of his 2025 MLB debut, even if he does end up making one more appearance in the minors.
May 17 2025Kirby (shoulder) allowed four runs on 10 hits and no walks while striking out four over four innings in his minor-league rehab start for Triple-A Tacoma on Friday, Adam Jude of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Friday marked Kirby's third outing in the minors amid his recovery from right shoulder inflammation, with Jude noting the hurler's next start could come with the Mariners. Kirby got his fastball velocity up to 97.5 mph, per Daniel Kramer of MLB.com, and he was able to throw 64 pitches. The 27-year-old right-hander will be aiming to build up his pitch count even further in his next outing, which should come either in the minors once more or perhaps in Thursday's series opener against the Astros to aid Seattle's injury-ravaged rotation.
May 12 2025Kirby (shoulder) is expected to make another minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Tacoma on Friday in Albuquerque, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby completed his second rehab start with Tacoma on Saturday, surrendering three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five batters over three innings. The right-hander has missed the entirety of the 2025 campaign so far while recovering from right shoulder inflammation and if all goes well Friday, he'd be on track to return to the major-league roster late next week.
May 11 2025Kirby (shoulder) completed his second minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts in three innings, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby threw 54 pitches (36 strikes) Saturday, and his fastball touched 97 mph. The hard-throwing right-hander is next expected to make a third rehab appearance while he enters the final stages of his recovery from right shoulder inflammation. If all continues to go well, Kirby should be able to make his season debut for the Mariners at some point before the end of May.
May 10 2025Kirby (shoulder) is scheduled to make another minor-league rehab start for Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby threw 42 pitches in his first rehab outing last Sunday, and he's in line to build up to around 60 pitches in his second appearance Saturday. The right-hander is working his way back from right shoulder inflammation, and Kirby is also expected to make a third start before rejoining Seattle's rotation. That gives him a chance to make his season debut before the end of May, barring any setbacks along the way.
May 5 2025Kirby (shoulder) struck out four and allowed one earned run on one hit and no walks over three innings in his first rehab start for Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pitching in a game setting for the first time since Feb. 26, Kirby performed about as well as the Mariners could have hoped, with a one-out solo home run in the third inning representing the only damage on his line. He otherwise avoided mistakes while spotting 33 of his 42 pitches for strikes and topping out at 97.8 miles per hour with his sinker. Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto told MLB Network on Friday that he expects Kirby to require just 2-to-3 rehab starts prior to returning from the 15-day injured list, so the right-hander will be in line for another appearance in the minors next weekend before the organization determines his next step.
May 3 2025Kirby (shoulder) will begin his rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday, Adam Jude of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby is in the final stages of his recovery from right shoulder inflammation that caused him to be placed on the 15-day injured list at the beginning of the season. He's slated to make his first rehab outing Sunday, and he'll need at least two or three starts in Triple-A before making his way back to the majors.
May 2 2025Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said Friday on MLB Network that he's "hopeful" Kirby (shoulder) will rejoin the rotation before the end of May, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby has been ramping up his throwing without issue and could begin a rehab assignment as soon as this weekend. The right-hander will make "at least two, maybe three" rehab starts, per Dipoto. Kirby has been working his way back from right shoulder inflammation, an injury that first cropped up in early March.
Apr 30 2025Kirby (shoulder) could begin a rehab assignment as soon as Sunday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby threw a live batting practice session Monday and described it as "nasty," adding that he "felt great." He will throw again Sunday, and it will be determined soon whether that will be in an official game setting. Kirby has been slow-played as he works his way back from right shoulder inflammation but has been checking every box along the way.
Apr 21 2025Kirby (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session at T-Mobile Park this week, Daniel Kremer of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby has thrown several bullpen sessions at the Mariners' spring training complex in Arizona and is almost ready to face hitters for the first time since coming down with right shoulder inflammation in early March. Mariners general manager Justin Hollander indicated Sunday that Kirby could be ready to rejoin the rotation in "May or June," although any timetable at this juncture is approximate. Emerson Hancock is currently filling Kirby's spot in Seattle's rotation.
Apr 7 2025Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said Monday that Kirby (shoulder) "felt great" while throwing a bullpen session over the weekend, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby is set to throw two more bullpen sessions this week before beginning a game progression. While Hollander wouldn't divulge a timetable for when the right-hander will be ready for his season debut, signs are pointing to it being sometime in May. Kirby was diagnosed with right shoulder inflammation back on March 7 but has made steady progress since then.
Mar 21 2025Kirby (shoulder) made 20 throws from 60 feet Friday and will expand his throwing distance to 75 feet Saturday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby was cleared to begin a throwing program Friday, two weeks after being sidelined with right shoulder inflammation. The right-hander was given a biologics injection last week, which he said definitely helped speed along the healing process. There is no timetable for when Kirby will be ready to make his season debut, as the Mariners will have to see how he responds to the ramp-up.
Mar 19 2025Kirby (shoulder) hopes to begin playing catch in the next few days, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After receiving an injection last week, Kirby has since resumed strengthening exercises but will remain in Arizona for three more weeks to continue his rehab. The Mariners shut Kirby down from throwing on March 7 due to right shoulder inflammation, and the star right-hander's timetable for a return remains up in the air a bit. With Kirby's throwing program still yet to begin, it sounds like fantasy managers shouldn't plan on having him available until mid-April at the earliest. "I'm hoping to get back up there by the middle of April," Kirby said.
Mar 13 2025Manager Dan Wilson revealed Thursday that Kirby (shoulder) has recently received a biologics injection, and the hope is the right-hander will be able to return to strengthening activities within 3-to-4 days, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The shot should aid the healing process for Kirby's right shoulder inflammation, but he's still slated to begin the season on the injured list while his recovery continues. However, it's encouraging to hear the star hurler is progressing and perhaps on track to get one step closer to resuming throwing. In the meantime, 2020 first-rounder Emerson Hancock remains in position to open 2025 as Seattle's No. 5 starter despite struggling with a 9.53 ERA and 1.94 WHIP over 5.2 innings this spring.
Mar 7 2025Kirby has been shut down from throwing due to right shoulder inflammation and will begin the season on the injured list, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby was not bouncing back well from his outings and had an MRI done, which came back negative. The right-hander wanted to keep throwing, but he was overruled and is slated to start the season on the IL. There is no timetable for when Kirby might be allowed to throw again. With Kirby sidelined, Emerson Hancock is likely to open the season in the Mariners' rotation.
Jan 9 2025The Mariners and Kirby avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $4.3 million contract Thursday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's a substantial raise for Kirby, who was eligible for arbitration for the first time as a Super 2 qualifier. The right-hander collected a 3.53 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 179:23 K:BB over 191 innings covering 33 starts for Seattle in 2024.
Sep 25 2024Kirby (14-11) hurled six innings of one-run ball to pick up the win Wednesday against Houston, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby was shaky to start this one, plunking Jeremy Pena and issuing a rare base on balls in the opening frame. Kirby settled in shortly thereafter, cruising through six innings to pick up his third-consecutive quality start and his 20th overall. Kirby showcased his historic control yet again this season, leading MLB with a 7.9 K/BB and a microscopic 1.1 BB/9. The 26-year-old will end the campaign with a 3.53 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and a pristine 179:23 K:BB in 191 innings (33 starts). The right-hander's combination of pinpoint control and durability makes him one of the most reliable pitchers in fantasy, although his limited strikeout totals (career 8.5 K/9) cap his fantasy ceiling.
Sep 20 2024Kirby (13-11) earned the win Friday versus the Rangers, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks over six innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Seattle right-hander posted his second consecutive quality start and 19th overall with this 85-pitch performance. Both runs Kirby yielded came via a Nathaniel Lowe RBI single in the fourth inning. The 26-year-old control artist has now made 14 starts this season (out of 32 total) without conceding a free pass, as he's pitched to a 3.60 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 173:22 K:BB across 185 innings. He's slated to make his last start of the season at Houston next week.
Sep 16 2024Kirby (12-11) got the win Sunday over the Rangers after tossing seven scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lone hit against Kirby was a single in the second inning and he immediately got a double-play ball on the very next pitch. It was Kirby's 27th quality start with zero walks since 2022, which is seven more than any other player over that span. Seven innings ties his longest outing of the year, and it was his first time going that deep since July 26. His strikeout numbers have dipped a bit lately, as he's struck out fewer than five batters in four of his last five starts. Overall, Kirby is enjoying another strong campaign with a 3.62 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 169:22 K:BB in 179 innings. His next start projects to come on the road against the Rangers again this weekend.
Sep 10 2024Kirby (11-11) took the loss Tuesday against the Padres, allowing five runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out four over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Three of the seven hits allowed by Kirby went for extra bases, which included a three-run blast from Fernando Tatis in the third and a two-run shot by Manny Machado in the fifth to knock Kirby from the game. He's now allowed 28 runs over his last 31 innings. It was the third time over his last six starts allowing at least five runs and his third game allowing multiple home runs. The 26-year-old will carry a 3.77 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 166:22 K:BB (172 innings) into a start at home against the Rangers this weekend.
Sep 5 2024Kirby (11-10) picked up the win over Oakland on Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits over six innings while striking out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby surrendered one run in the opening frame after giving up back-to-back hits to start the inning. However, he would then go on to strike out eight of the next 11 batters he faced in the contest en route to posting just his second quality start since July 26 against the White Sox. The right-hander also recorded his second-highest strikeout total of the season Wednesday while securing his third win in his last four decisions. On the downside, Kirby has now allowed multiple runs in seven consecutive starts.
Aug 30 2024Kirby (10-10) earned the win over the Angels on Friday, allowing five runs on five hits and a walk while striking out two over 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Aside from his usual sharp control, Kirby was a little off in his last start of August. He allowed three home runs, matching his season high for the third time, though all of the long balls he surrendered Friday were solo shots. Kirby posted a 6.84 ERA over 25 innings across five starts in August, and he yielded nine of the 20 homers he's allowed all year in that span. Overall, Kirby is now at a 3.63 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 153:21 K:BB through 161 innings over 28 starts. He's lined up to make his next start in Oakland.
Aug 24 2024Kirby (9-10) took the loss Saturday, giving up three runs on nine hits and a walk over 4.2 innings as the Mariners were downed 4-3 by the Giants. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander failed to complete five innings for the second time in his last three starts, but only the fourth time in 2024, with the other two short outings coming back in April. Kirby exited after 95 pitches (63 strikes), and through four starts in August he sports an uncharacteristic 6.52 ERA and 1.91 WHIP despite a 20:5 K:BB through 19.1 innings. He'll look to escape the doldrums in his next trip to the mound, which is scheduled to come on the road next weekend against the Angels.
Aug 18 2024Kirby (9-9) earned the win Sunday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over six innings against the Pirates. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby scattered just two hits through the first five innings as the Mariners provided the righty a 7-0 cushion. A Joey Bart two-run homer in the sixth was the first and only blemish against Kirby, who contributed his 16th quality start of the season. The 26-year-old righty put a halt to the Mariners' five-game skid, rebounding from allowing career highs in runs (11) and hits (13) against Detroit in his last start to allow two runs or fewer for the 17th time over 25 starts. He'll carry a 3.40 ERA and 1.08 WHIP into a scheduled home matchup next week against the Giants.
Aug 13 2024Kirby (8-9) took the loss against the Tigers on Tuesday, allowing 11 runs on 13 hits and one walk with five strikeouts over 3.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby surrendered career highs in hits and runs in his second straight loss to the Tigers. He did generate 15 swinging strikes on 86 pitches but was tagged for 12 hard-hit balls and three homers. The righty has failed to record a quality start in three consecutive outings, allowing 27 hits and 16 earned runs across 14 innings in that span. Despite Tuesday's nightmare performance, the 26-year-old owns a 3.73 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 143:17 K:BB across 144.2 innings and will try to rebound this weekend against the Pirates.
Aug 8 2024Kirby took the loss against the Tigers on Wednesday, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk over five innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby had a hard time with Detroit's lineup out of the gate, coughing up a leadoff homer to Wenceel Perez to open the contest before also surrendering runs in the third and fourth innings. The right-hander allowed multiple long balls on the night, something he hadn't done since June 21 against the Marlins (span of seven starts), and he's now failed to make it through six innings in back-to-back outings. Still, Kirby has not given up more than three runs in any start since May 24 and currently holds a 3.14 ERA on the season.
Jul 31 2024Kirby pitched 5.1 innings against Boston on Wednesday, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out two batters in a no-decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby surrendered a run in the first inning but wasn't scored upon again until the sixth. In the latter frame, he gave up a pair of one-out hits, leading to his removal and ending a streak of nine straight starts of at least six frames. The right-hander had recorded a quality start in each of those contests and logged a 1.73 ERA, though he posted just a 3-2 record. Kirby will try to begin a new streak his next time on the mound, which is tentatively slated to be a matchup against Detroit.
Jul 27 2024Kirby (8-7) picked up the win in Friday's 10-0 rout of the White Sox, scattering six hits and a walk over seven scoreless innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Seattle's offense staked Kirby to an 8-0 lead before he even took the mound for the bottom of the first inning, but the right-hander didn't take it easy on the opposition. Chicago never got a runner past second base against Kirby as he fired 60 of his 88 pitches for strikes before exiting. He's been incredibly consistent for the M's -- he hasn't given up more than three runs in an outing since May 24, and he's lasted at least six innings in nine straight starts, posting a 1.73 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 55:7 K:BB in 57.1 innings over that stretch. Kirby is scheduled to make his next trip to the mound on the road next week in Boston.
Jul 21 2024Kirby did not factor into the decision in a loss to the Astros on Saturday, allowing one run on four hits over six innings while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby cruised through the first three frames before hitting Alex Bregman, who would later come around to score on a Jeremy Pena single, with a pitch to lead off the fourth. That would be the only run allowed by the right-hander on the night as Seattle's offense once again failed to provide him with much in terms of run support. Kirby has now logged eight quality starts in a row, though he has just two wins to show for it -- the most recent of which back on June 26. He's held his opponents to one earned run in back-to-back starts and now carries a 2.59 ERA in July to go along with a 26:4 K:BB.
Jul 13 2024Kirby (7-7) allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out seven over six innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was just the third time all year Kirby has walked multiple batters. He heads into the All-Star break with seven straight quality starts, though he's gone 2-2 in that span due to a continued lack of run support. Kirby owns an excellent 3.29 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 116:13 K:BB through 117.2 innings over 20 starts this season.
Jul 8 2024Kirby didn't factor into the decision Sunday against the Blue Jays, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk over six-plus innings. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby posted a sixth straight quality start and left the contest having allowed just one run. However, he left a pair of runners on the basepaths, both of which came in to score on a George Springer home run to finalize Kirby's earned run total at three. Kirby is tied for the 10th most quality starts in baseball and ranks top-10 in innings pitched with 111.2. He owns a 3.39 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP along with an outstanding 109:11 K:BB on the year. He's scheduled to face the Angels next weekend.
Jul 2 2024Kirby (7-6) allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out five over 6.1 innings, taking the loss Tuesday versus the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby's gone seven starts in a row without allowing more than two runs, but he didn't get any run support Tuesday. The Mariners mustered two hits and four walks but couldn't scrape together a run, leaving Kirby to take his first loss since May 24. The right-hander continues to give his team a chance to win, maintaining a 3.32 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 101:10 K:BB across 105.2 innings through 18 starts this year. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Blue Jays.
Jun 26 2024Kirby (7-5) allowed one run on four hits while striking out seven over six innings to earn the win Wednesday over the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby had his way with the Rays on Wednesday as he managed to get through six innings for his third win in his last five starts. Kirby has been on a tear, allowing two runs or less in six consecutive starts, posting a 1.70 ERA with three walks and 40 strikeouts in that span. He has the third best ERA in MLB since May and he'll look to keep it going in a tough matchup vs. the Orioles next week.
Jun 22 2024Kirby came away with a no-decision in Friday's 3-2 extra-inning loss to the Marlins, allowing two runs on five hits over seven innings. He struck out five without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 26-year-old right-hander reeled off his third straight quality start and ninth of the season on an efficient 85 pitches (60 strikes), but Kirby was denied his seventh win of the year when the Seattle offense went cold after the second inning. He'll take a 3.47 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and dazzling 89:9 K:BB through 93.1 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come on the road next week in Tampa Bay.
Jun 15 2024Kirby (6-5) allowed an unearned run on three hits and two walks while striking out six over six innings to earn the win Saturday over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was Kirby's first time issuing multiple walks since his season debut, as he continues to have some of the best control in the majors. The right-hander has allowed two or fewer runs in each of his last four starts after a pair of five-run outings in mid-May. He's now at a 3.54 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 84:9 K:BB over 86.1 innings through 15 starts this year. Kirby is projected to make his next start at Miami in a highly favorable matchup.
Jun 9 2024Kirby allowed a run on five hits over seven innings in a no-decision Sunday. He struck out four during the win over the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lone run to score on Kirby came via a sacrifice bunt in the fifth inning. After a shaky stretch in May, he's back to looking like his usual self recently; over his last three starts, Kirby has posted a 2.00 ERA and 21:1 K:BB. He was in line for the win after his seventh quality start of 2024 before the Royals tied up the game in the ninth inning. Kirby is now sporting a 3.81 ERA with a terrific 78:7 K:BB through 80.1 frames. His next start is lined up to be at home against the Rangers.
Jun 5 2024Kirby (5-5) got the win over the Athletics on Tuesday, recording nine strikeouts while allowing two earned runs on six hits and a walk over five-plus innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander had his swing-and-miss stuff in prime form for the second consecutive start, one-upping his eight-strikeout tally against the Astros last Wednesday. The two runs on Kirby's ledger came about through relatively innocuous means, with Abraham Toro getting to him with an RBI single in the third and Austin Voth conceding an RBI groundout to inherited runner Shea Langeliers upon entering for Kirby in the sixth. Kirby's last two strikeout-heavy outings have come on the heels of back-to-back starts where he gave up five runs apiece to the Nationals and Orioles, giving him some momentum heading into a projected tussle with the improved Royals at home on Sunday.
May 30 2024Kirby did not factor into the decision in a win over the Astros on Wednesday, allowing one run on six hits over six innings while striking out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby retired the first eight batters he faced to open the contest and didn't allow an extra-base hit over his six innings of work. The right-hander induced 15 swings and misses on the night en route to posting his highest strikeout total in his last six starts. He's now gone six or more innings in four consecutive outings, though he's posted quality starts in only two of those appearances. Kirby has also walked only two batters over six starts in May.
May 24 2024Kirby (4-5) took the loss Friday against the Nationals, allowing five runs on six hits and one walk over six innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby was hurt by the home-run ball Friday, with all five runs coming on a pair of long balls. The 26-year-old Kirby's hit a rough patch recently, allowing four or more runs in three of his last four outings. His ERA is up to 4.33 despite a solid 1.03 WHIP and 57:6 K:BB over 11 starts (62.1 innings). Kirby will look to get back on track in his next outing, currently lined up for next week at home against the Astros.
May 19 2024Kirby (4-4) suffered the loss Sunday against the Orioles, allowing five runs on nine hits over six innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby was tagged for a solo homer by Gunnar Henderson to lead off the game and eventually allowed five runs and two homers through three innings before settling down and making it through six frames with no additional damage. It was the first time in seven starts Kirby has allowed more than five hits, while the five earned runs lifted Kirby's ERA to 3.99 over 56.1 innings and 5.19 over 26 innings on the road. Kirby's next start is also slated to take place on the road, though in a much friendlier matchup, as he's tentatively lined up to take on the Nationals in Washington next weekend.
May 13 2024Kirby (4-3) earned the win over Kansas City on Monday, allowing three hits and no walks while striking out six batters over seven scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby was shaky to begin his outing, allowing a single to the second hitter he faced and then loading the bases on consecutive hit-by-pitches. He worked his way out of that threat, though, and yielded just two harmless singles the rest of the way to finish with his fourth scoreless start of the campaign. The right-hander had an 8.16 ERA through three starts this season but has lowered that to 3.58 by giving up two or fewer runs in five of his subsequent six appearances. He's registered four quality starts over that stretch.
May 9 2024Kirby (3-3) was hit with the loss against the Twins on Wednesday, allowing four runs on four hits and one walk over five innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby didn't have his best stuff Wednesday, surrendering back-to-back home runs to Carlos Correa and Trevor Larnach in the first inning, along with a third long ball off the bat of Willi Castro in the following frame. The right-hander had not allowed more than one home run in a start coming in and had held opponents to one or fewer runs in each of his previous three outings. On a positive note, Kirby has now gone at least five innings in five consecutive starts, posting a 32:3 K:BB over that stretch.
May 6 2024Kirby (knee) is listed as the Mariners' probable starting pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Twins at Target Field. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In his most recent start Friday against the Astros, Kirby contended with a right knee issue and was lifted after just 88 pitches. Kirby was sent in for an MRI on Saturday, and though the Mariners aren't disclosing the results of his imaging, neither the pitcher nor manager Scott Servais believe the knee issue is anything concerning, per MLB.com. The Mariners' tune could change if Kirby's knee is still bothering him following a between-starts bullpen session, but for now, fantasy managers should plan on the right-hander being available to start Wednesday without restrictions.
May 4 2024Kirby underwent an MRI on his right knee Saturday after being removed early from his start against the Astros on Friday, but the results are still pending, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby's night ended Friday after a relatively modest 88 pitches due to the lingering right knee issue, which he conceded after the game he'd been dealing with "for the last couple of weeks." The general feeling after the game was he would be able to make his next start without issue, but manager Scott Servais said Kirby was sent for an MRI "just to make sure we're treating it the right way." Servais confirmed Kirby's arm felt good and added that he still expected the talented right-hander to make his next scheduled start, which is slated for Wednesday at Target Field against the Twins.
May 3 2024Manager Scott Servais said Friday that Kirby has been dealing with a right knee issue, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Servais added that Kirby's knee isn't considered a major problem, but it was the reason why he was pulled from his start Friday after throwing just 88 pitches through six innings. The Mariners will keep an eye on the right-hander's condition, but at the moment it appears Kirby should still be able to make his next start -- tentatively scheduled for Thursday against Minnesota.
Apr 28 2024Kirby (3-2) earned the win over the Diamondbacks on Saturday, hurling seven shutout innings while allowing two hits and two walks. He struck out 12. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby wasn't playing around Saturday, fanning six of the first eight batters he faced en route to recording a career-high 12 strikeouts on the night. The right-hander has now hurled 12 shutout innings over his last two starts, and Saturday also marked the second time this season in which he's allowed only two hits. Kirby carries a 30:2 K:BB over five starts this month and has won his last two decisions.
Apr 21 2024Kirby pitched five scoreless innings, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out seven in Seattle's 2-1 extra-inning loss to the Rockies in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby was able to follow up his quality start Monday with another strong outing Sunday, limiting Colorado to just six baserunners while his seven punchouts were his second highest total in a start this season. After a pair of clunkers, the right-hander allowed just two earned runs over 11 innings in his last two starts, dropping his ERA from 8.16 to 5.33 over 25.1 innings this season. Kirby is tentatively set to return to the mound Saturday for a home matchup with the Diamondbacks.
Apr 15 2024Kirby (2-2) earned the win over Cincinnati on Monday, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out six batters over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby was pounded for 13 runs over 7.2 frames across his previous two starts coming into Monday, but he managed to get back on the right track with a quality start and a victory. The right-hander induced 12 whiffs among his 60 strikes and racked up six punchouts after notching just five over his previous two outings combined. Kirby still has a poor 6.64 ERA and 1.33 WHIP over 20.1 innings on the season, but he has two quality starts among his four appearances.
Apr 9 2024Kirby (1-2) took the loss Tuesday in Toronto, coughing up five runs on eight hits over four innings as the Mariners fell 5-3. He struck out three without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Three of the hits off the right-hander went for extra bases, including a two-run shot by Bo Bichette in the third inning -- the first homer of the year for the Blue Jays shortstop, and the first Kirby has served up. He pounded the strike zone per usual, tossing 64 of 87 pitches for strikes, but he wasn't fooling anyone and generated only four swinging strikes. Kirby will carry a 6.91 ERA and 13:2 K:BB through 14.1 innings into his next start, which lines up to come at home against the Reds early next week.
Apr 4 2024Kirby (1-1) took the loss Wednesday, allowing eight runs on 10 hits and no walks over 3.2 innings against the Guardians. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It wasn't Kirby's day and that was evident from the jump as the right-hander surrendered three runs in the opening frame and was victimized for another two runs in the second. The eight runs allowed marked a career high for Kirby, a disappointing follow-up to his stellar performance against Boston to begin the season. He'll look to bounce back next week when the Mariners travel to Toronto to take on the Blue Jays.
Mar 29 2024Kirby (1-0) earned the win Friday against the Red Sox, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out eight over 6.2 scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby settled in after issuing a pair of walks in the first inning, allowing just two baserunners over his final 5.2 frames en route to a 1-0 victory. The 26-year-old right-hander went 13-10 last year with a 3.35 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and a stellar 172:19 K:BB across 31 starts. Kirby's off to another good start in 2024 -- he's currently lined up for a home matchup next week versus the Guardians.
Mar 20 2024Kirby has an 8.31 ERA and 1.73 WHIP over 8.2 innings across three Cactus League starts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander is expected to slot into the No. 2 role in the rotation this year despite the rough spring. Kirby showed some signs of progress in his most recent start Saturday against the Reds, allowing three earned runs on five hits and a walk over five innings while recording three strikeouts. Kirby had allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits and a walk over eight innings over his first two starts, albeit with five strikeouts. Kirby is slated for one more Cactus League start to work out any kinks before a projected regular-season debut against the Red Sox on March 29.
Feb 27 2024Kirby didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's Cactus League tie with the Giants, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits over 1.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The talented right-hander was spotted an early 2-0 lead courtesy of Mitch Garver's home run in the top of the first, but Kirby quickly squandered it by allowing an RBI single to LaMonte Wade and then loading the bases. Kirby was pulled for Jarod Bayless, who promptly surrendered a grand slam to Patrick Bailey, before coming back out for the second inning and tossing a scoreless frame. Per MLB.com, Kirby faced nine hitters and hit 95 mph on his fastball while also working in plenty of breaking pitches.
Oct 1 2023Kirby (13-10) allowed three hits and struck out seven without walking a batter over six shutout innings to earn the win Sunday versus the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While the Mariners came up short in pursuit of a playoff spot, Kirby still took the hill and turned in a gem for his final start of the year. He won his last three starts of the campaign, allowing just three runs over 19 innings in that span. The 25-year-old right-hander ends 2023 with a strong 3.35 ERA as well as a 1.04 WHIP and 165:19 K:BB over 190.2 innings across 31 starts. His 0.9 BB/9 was by far the best among qualified starters this season -- Tampa Bay's Zach Eflin was next closest with a 1.2 BB/9.
Sep 26 2023Kirby (12-10) allowed five hits and a walk while striking out four over six scoreless innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby found a great time to turn dominant. This was his first scoreless outing since Aug. 12, and he'd given up at least three runs in each of his last six starts. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 3.46 with a 1.06 WHIP and 165:19 K:BB through 184.2 innings over 30 starts this season. The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the Mariners, who remain in contention for a playoff spot and the AL West title. Kirby is projected for a start this weekend versus the Rangers, one he'll almost certainly make if the Mariners aren't eliminated before his turn comes up again.
Sep 20 2023Kirby (11-10) picked up the win Wednesday, giving up three runs on eight hits over seven innings in a 6-3 victory over the A's. He struck out three without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander did serve up a solo shot to Zack Gelof in the fourth inning and a two-run homer to Brent Rooker in the sixth, but otherwise Kirby allowed nothing but singles as he delivered his first quality start since he shut out the O's back on Aug. 12, and collected his first win since Aug. 5. With the Mariners in a dogfight for the AL West title, and not guaranteed a wild-card spot if they fall short, the team needs Kirby to continue this return to form to close out the season -- if he stays on turn, his final two regular-season starts would both come at home against the Astros and Rangers next week.
Sep 15 2023Kirby (10-10) allowed four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven over six innings, taking the loss Friday versus the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby has allowed 19 runs (18 earned) across 27 innings over his last five starts. This was also the second start in a row in which he's issued multiple walks, something he's done only four times all year. The rough patch has him up to a 3.57 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 158:18 K:BB through 171.2 innings over 28 starts overall. Kirby is projected for a favorable road start in Oakland next week.
Sep 8 2023Kirby did not factor into the decision during Friday's loss, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks over 6.1 innings against Tampa Bay. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby's two walks allowed matched his season high as the control artist now has only 16 total walks on the season. Since throwing nine shutout innings against the Orioles on Aug. 12, the 25-year-old has allowed at least three earned runs in four straight starts. During those outings, he has a 6.00 ERA and 20 strikeouts over 21 innings. Kirby looks to rebound in his next start, scheduled to be at home against the Angels.
Sep 4 2023Kirby (10-9) took the loss Sunday, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits over three innings against the Mets. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby struggled to get through the Mets lineup, throwing 73 pitches across three frames before being pulled. The outing marked Kirby's shortest start of the season. The 25-year-old is in the midst of a rough patch, having allowed 11 runs across his last three appearances (14.2 innings) while being tagged for a home run in each outing. He'll look to get back on track in his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to come Friday at Tampa Bay.
Aug 30 2023Mariners manager Scott Servais said Wednesday that Kirby (illness) will slot back into the rotation during this weekend's series with the Mets, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After falling ill, Kirby was scratched ahead of his scheduled start Tuesday, prompting the Mariners to turn to Luke Weaver as their lead pitcher in their eventual 3-1 loss to Oakland. The Mariners won't skip over Kirby's turn in the rotation entirely, as he'll be back on the bump in New York, assuming he's able to move past the illness heading into the weekend. Servais hasn't specified yet which of the three games versus the Mets that Kirby will start.
Aug 29 2023Kirby was scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday against Oakland due to an illness, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Luke Weaver will fill in as Seattle's starting pitcher Tuesday, and it is unclear whether or not Kirby will be able to make his next start -- tentatively scheduled for Monday against Cincinnati. For now, Kirby should be considered day-to-day.
Aug 23 2023Kirby did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing three runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings against the White Sox. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby's now gone four starts (27.2 innings) without issuing a walk. He held the White Sox to one run through his first five innings Wednesday, working his way through traffic thanks to his nine strikeouts. However, Trayce Thompson's two-run homer ended Kirby's outing with two outs in the sixth. The 25-year-old right-hander's allowed seven runs over his last two starts (11.2 innings), though he still sports a solid 2.89 ERA with 49:3 K:BB in his previous seven outings. Overall, Kirby's 10-8 across 25 starts (156.1 innings) this season with a 3.28 ERA and 1.03 WHIP. He's currently in line for a home matchup with the Athletics early next week.
Aug 18 2023Kirby did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing four runs on eight hits over six innings against the Royals. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby pitched well for most of the afternoon, allowing one run over the first five innings before Maikel Garcia reached on a fielding error to open the bottom of the sixth. The right-hander would then allow four consecutive hits and a sac fly, leading to three more runs coming across for Kansas City. Kirby had allowed one or fewer runs in each of his previous three starts coming in while his two strikeouts on the afternoon matched his season low. He now holds a 2.05 ERA through three August starts and has not issued a walk over that stretch.
Aug 12 2023Kirby allowed just three hits and struck out seven over nine scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Orioles on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby brought his best against the American League's top team, but he came away with nothing despite the gem. He faced just 29 batters, erasing one of the three hits he surrendered on a double play. Kirby also threw 73 of 103 pitches for strikes, again showcasing his high-end control. The right-hander now has a 3.11 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 131:14 K:BB through 144.2 innings over 23 starts on the year. He's lined up for a favorable road start in Kansas City next week.
Aug 5 2023Kirby (10-8) allowed a run on three hits and struck out five without walking a batter over seven innings to earn the win Saturday over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lone blemish on Kirby's line was a Randal Grichuk solo home run in the third inning. This was a return to Kirby's impeccable control -- he'd issued eight walks over his last seven starts, an unusually high mark for the right-hander. He's logged 16 quality starts in 22 outings this season, pitching to a 3.32 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 124:14 K:BB through 135.2 innings on the year. Kirby is projected for a difficult home start versus the Orioles next weekend.
Jul 31 2023Kirby allowed a run on four hits and two walks while striking out seven over five innings in a no-decision versus the Red Sox on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby was solid but inefficient, needing 97 pitches (63 strikes) to get through five frames. This was just the second time all season Kirby has allowed multiple walks in a start. He had a couple of rough starts in July, but he's still at a 3.43 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 119:14 K:BB through 128.2 innings across 21 starts this season. Kirby is lined up for a road start versus the Angels over the weekend.
Jul 25 2023Kirby did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk over four innings against Minnesota. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby couldn't contain Minnesota, serving up four total extra-base hits including a two-run homer to Matt Wallner in the first frame. The outing marked Kirby's first time not reaching the fifth inning since June 7 (seven starts). The 25-year-old has endured a rollercoaster stretch of starts, having allowed at least five runs in two of his last four starts, while giving up a combined one run during the other two. However, he still owns a solid 3.49 ERA to go along with a 112:12 K:BB through 123.2 innings in 2023.
Jul 20 2023Kirby (9-8) earned the win Thursday, allowing four hits over seven scoreless innings in a 5-0 win over the Twins. He struck out 10. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby made easy work of the Twins on Thursday, matching a season-high with 10 strikeouts while delivering his fourth scoreless outing of the year. It was quite a bounce-back performance from the 25-year-old right-hander after he allowed six runs in his last outing, a loss to the Tigers. Kirby's ERA is now down to 3.23 with a 1.04 WHIP and a league-best 8.45 K/BB. Kirby will look to keep rolling in his next outing, currently lined up as a rematch with the Twins in Minnesota.
Jul 15 2023Kirby (8-8) allowed six runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out four over five innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby strung together five straight quality starts heading into the All-Star break, but he didn't fare well in his first outing of the second half. The right-hander gave up four of the runs on a pair of homers from Kerry Carpenter, making this just the second time in 18 appearances Kirby's allowed multiple long balls. He has a 3.43 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 93:11 K:BB through 112.2 innings. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Twins.
Jul 6 2023Kirby (8-7)allowed a run on six hits and a walk while striking out three over 6.2 innings to earn the win Thursday over the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby limited the damage to a Corey Julks RBI double in the seventh inning. It was a fifth straight quality start for Kirby, who has been a bit unlucky to pick up only three wins in that span while allowing just 10 runs (eight earned) over 33 innings. The All-Star right-hander trimmed his ERA to 3.09 with a 1.04 WHIP and 89:10 K:BB over 107.2 innings through 17 starts this season.
Jul 1 2023Kirby (7-7) allowed two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out seven over seven innings to earn the win Saturday over the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning, when he gave up a double to Yandy Diaz and a home run to Luke Raley. Aside from those minor missteps, Kirby turned in another strong outing for his fourth consecutive quality start. This was the first time he's walked multiple batters in a start this year. The right-hander has allowed nine runs (seven earned) over 26.1 innings in that span. For the season, he owns a 3.21 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 86:9 K:BB through 101 innings across 16 starts. Kirby is projected for another challenging start on the road in Houston next week.
Jun 25 2023Kirby (6-7) took the loss Sunday, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and one walk over 6.1 innings against the Orioles. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For the second straight appearance, Kirby added a tally to the loss column while also finishing with a quality start. Most of the damage against Kirby came in the third frame, where Anthony Santander launched a two-run homer that plated Jorge Mateo. Despite being tied for the eighth most losses in MLB, Kirby holds a strong 3.26 ERA on the year and has given up just five earned runs over his last three starts (19.1 innings). He is tentatively scheduled to toe the rubber again during a home series versus the Rays next weekend.
Jun 21 2023Kirby (6-6) took the loss against the Yankees on Tuesday, allowing three earned runs on eight hits over seven innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby had the misfortune of being opposed by a razor-sharp Gerrit Cole, who was a tad more effective than the young right-hander and ensured his opposite number didn't get sufficient run support. There was still plenty to be optimistic about from Kirby's perspective, considering he worked 67 of his 95 offerings into the strike zone and was primarily done in by just one pitch, a 96 mph sinker Billy McKinney deposited 432 feet away with Harrison Bader aboard. The outing marked Kirby's second straight quality start and third such effort in his last four trips to the mound.
Jun 14 2023Kirby improved to 6-5 in Tuesday's 9-3 win over the Marlins after allowing one run (zero earned) on three hits and no walks over six innings. He struck out a career-high 10 batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby retired the first 13 batters before Yuli Gurriel got a base hit. The 25-year-old was roughed up pretty badly his last time out, but he rebounded with 20 whiffs, leading to a career-high 10 strikeouts. It was also his third straight outing without walking a batter. Kirby leads all qualified pitchers with a 0.7 BB/9 and an 11.8 K/BB, as he's displayed spectacular control throughout the season. He now owns a 3.24 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 71:6 K:BB over 80.2 innings and lines up for a meeting with the Yankees next week.
Jun 7 2023Kirby (5-5) took the loss Wednesday, allowing five runs on 11 hits over 3.2 innings against the Padres. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a rough outing for Kirby after he allowed just three hits in eight scoreless innings in his last outing against the Yankees. The 25-year-old right-hander has a 5.79 ERA over his last four starts after pitching to a 2.45 mark in his first eight outings. Overall, Kirby's ERA is up to 3.50 with a 1.11 WHIP and a still outstanding 61:6 K:BB through 74.2 innings this season. He'll look to get back on track in his next outing, currently lined up for next week against the Marlins.
Jun 1 2023Kirby took a no-decision while tossing eight scoreless innings Wednesday in a 1-0 win over the Yankees in 10 innings. He allowed just three hits and no walks and struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby put together a spectacular performance after he was roughed up by the Pirates the last time he took the mound. The 25-year-old was touching 99 miles per hour with his fastball and showed off his impeccable command of his entire arsenal of pitches. Wednesday marked the third time this season he's reached seven strikeouts in an outing and the fifth time he's gone without walking a batter. He has just six walks through 71 innings and leads all of baseball with a 9.67 K/BB to go with a 3.04 ERA and 1.01 WHIP. Kirby lines up to go toe-to-toe with the Padres on the road next week.
May 26 2023Kirby (5-4) took the loss Friday versus the Pirates, allowing seven runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out four over 4.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby came into this start having allowed just three homers in his first nine outings. The Pirates then launched four long balls off of him, including Andrew McCutchen's blast on the second pitch of the game. This was Kirby's worst start of the season, and the second time he's given up four homers in a game in his 35 career games. The right-hander's ERA ballooned to 3.43 with a 1.10 WHIP and 51:6 K:BB across 63 innings. He hasn't had many disasters like this, though he is lined up for a challenging home start versus the Yankees next week as he looks to bounce back.
May 21 2023Kirby (5-3) took the loss Sunday, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk over seven innings during a 3-2 loss to Atlanta. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby allowed a run in the first, third and sixth en route to taking the loss but still completed at least seven innings for the fourth time over his past five outings. He also extended his quality-start streak to eight consecutive contests and currently holds a 2.62 ERA and 47:5 K:BB over 58.1 innings. Kirby will look to stay sharp during his next start, which is tentatively scheduled for the first contest of a three-game weekend set versus Pittsburgh.
May 15 2023Kirby (5-2) earned the win over Boston on Monday, allowing one run on eight hits and one walk while striking out six batters over 6.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby got through five scoreless frames before the Red Sox tagged him for a run in the sixth. He finished off that inning and got two more outs in the seventh before being lifted with two runners on base after tossing 97 pitches (66 strikes). Kirby fell one out shy of extending his three-game streak of throwing at least seven frames, but he did stretch his run of quality starts to seven consecutive contests. He's pitching like an All-Star this season with five wins along with a 2.45 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 41:4 K:BB through eight starts.
May 9 2023Kirby (4-2) scattered six hits and struck out nine batters over seven shutout innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kirby threw 75 of 101 pitches for strikes, which included a solid 11 whiffs. The nine strikeouts were a season high for Kirby in what was his sixth straight quality start. He's gone at least seven innings in each of his last three outings. For the season, he owns a 2.62 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 35:3 K:BB over 44.2 innings through seven starts. He'll look to keep rolling in his next game, tentatively projected to be a road start in Boston next week.
May 4 2023Kirby (3-2) allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out two over seven innings to earn the win Thursday over the Athletics.
