Jun 27 2024Villar is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cubs, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wilmer Flores will man first base while the Cubs send southpaw Shota Imanaga to the mound, but even though he's a right-handed hitter like Flores, Villar looks as though he'll be the preferred option against right-handed pitching. Villar started both of the last two nights against righties, going 1-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. The 27-year-old's stay atop the depth chart may not last long, however, as top first baseman LaMonte Wade (hamstring) is in the midst of a rehab assignment and could be activated from the injured list as soon as this weekend.
Jun 22 2024The Giants recalled Villar from Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Villar has spent the entire season in Triple-A after failing to make the MLB roster out of spring training. During his time in Sacramento, he's slashed .272/.352/.487 with 12 homers and 46 RBI in 264 plate appearances. He only posted a .551 OPS in the majors last season, however, so his Triple-A success shouldn't be expected to translate into the big leagues.
Mar 20 2024The Giants optioned Villar to minor-league camp Wednesday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Villar was never a likely bet to make San Francisco's Opening Day roster, though he had a strong showing during spring training with three homers and a 1.093 OPS in 44 plate appearances. The 27-year-old had an .869 OPS at the Triple-A level last season but also struck out at a 26.6 percent clip, and he'll likely need to show improved contact skills to having any staying power in the majors.
Mar 10 2024Villar (hand) is starting at third base and batting sixth in Sunday's Cactus League game against the Mariners, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Villar was hit by a pitch on the left hand Monday but had X-rays come back negative, and he'll return to action Sunday after taking a few days to recover. The 27-year-old struggled to a .551 OPS in 46 big-league games last season and is fighting for a bench job on San Francisco's Opening Day roster.
Mar 4 2024Villar is day-to-day after X-rays on his left hand came back negative, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.comreports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Villar had to be removed from Monday's contest against the Rockies after being hit on the left hand by a pitch, but he's managed to escape with merely a bruise. The 27-year-old is competing for a reserve infielder job with the Giants this spring.
Feb 29 2024Villar will play in his fifth Cactus League game of the spring Thursday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Villar is getting plenty of playing time so far, and he's gone 2-for-7 with a pair of doubles and a run scored over his first four spring games. The 27-year-old is projected for a utility role if he makes the major-league roster out of camp. That said, he has no clear path to playing time with more established options at both corner infield spots and second base, his three most likely positions. Villar also bats right-handed, as are all but two (LaMonte Wade and Brett Wisely) of the Giants' infield options, so there's not much chance of Villar earning a favorable platoon situation.
Jul 26 2023The Giants optioned Villar to Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Villar will head back to Triple-A after being called up July 19, having gone hitless across 11 at-bats with a run scored, a walk and seven strikeouts in limited action following his promotion. Top prospect Marco Luciano was called up from Sacramento and will likely make his major-league debut Wednesday versus the Athletics.
Jul 19 2023San Francisco recalled Villar from Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Villar will provide infield depth for the Giants as Brandon Crawford recovers from a bout of left knee inflammation. The 26-year-old holds a brutal .159/.244/.345 batting line in 40 games (127 plate appearances) this season at the MLB level.
Jun 30 2023Villar was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Friday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Villar opened the 2023 campaign as a regular fixture in the Giants' lineup, but he's now been demoted to the minors for the second time this season. Alex Cobb (oblique) was activated from the injured list in a corresponding roster move and will start Friday against the Mets.
Jun 20 2023Villar will play first base and hit ninth versus the Padres on Tuesday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Villar is a late addition to the lineup after LaMonte Wade was scratched from the lineup with tightness in his side. Villar has not had much success thus far in 2023 with a .154 average and .585 OPS over 104 at-bats across 37 games.
Jun 14 2023The Giants recalled Villar from Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday. He'll start at third base and bat eighth in the Giants' series finale in St. Louis, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Villar will return to the major-league roster after being sent down May 30. The 26-year-old has struggled to a .135 average with four home runs, 11 RBI, 10 runs scored and a stolen base in 32 games with the Giants this season. With J.D. Davis (ankle) potentially set for a stint on the injured list, Villar could get another look as a regular in the San Francisco lineup.
Jun 13 2023Villar was removed from the lineup by Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday in the fourth inning, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Villar's removal is all but assuredly related to J.D. Davis (undisclosed) with Davis leaving with an injury against the Cardinals on Tuesday. The infielder would likely serve in a utility role if/when he receives a promotion come Wednesday.
May 30 2023The Giants optioned Villar to Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Just three days after being recalled by the Giants, Villar will head back to Sacramento. Villar holds a .514 OPS through 108 plate appearances in the majors this season, but has been solid in the minors with a .900 OPS. If Villar can maintain a high level of output at the plate in Triple-A, he could be back with the Giants relatively soon. Luke Jackson (elbow) was activated from the 60-day injured list Tuesday in a corresponding move.
May 27 2023Villar was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Thairo Estrada was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left wrist sprain, opening the door for Villar to return after a couple weeks in the minors. Villar struggled to the tune of a .148/.240/.318 line in his prior stint with the Giants this season, fanning in exactly one-third of his plate appearances. He figures to serve primarily as a bench piece with perhaps occasional starts against left-handed pitching.
May 14 2023San Francisco optioned Villar to Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Villar hadn't seen consistent playing time thus far in May, and his outlook wasn't going to improve after Brandon Crawford (calf) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Sunday. As a result, the Giants elected to send Villar back to Triple-A so he can receive everyday at-bats.
May 10 2023Villar is on the bench Wednesday versus the Nationals, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Villar has now been out of the lineup for eight of the last 11 games, as he seems to have lost a hold on a regular role following a .570 OPS in his first 28 contests. With Brandon Crawford (calf) due back soon, Villar's roster spot might be in jeopardy.
Apr 30 2023Villar is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Villar is sitting against a right-handed starting pitcher (Yu Darvish) for the second straight day and appears to have ceded primary duties at third base to J.D. Davis. The righty-hitting Villar offers the ability to play three infield positions and should still have a path to steady playing time versus left-handed pitching.
