Jun 17 2025The Mets placed Megill on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a right elbow sprain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A sprained elbow indicates Megill is dealing with damage to his UCL, but the pitcher said Tuesday that he just has inflammation and no structural damage, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Megill will be shut down for at least 7-to-10 days before ramping things back up. The Mets are due to get Frankie Montas (lat) and Sean Manaea (oblique) back soon, but they will need someone else to fill in for Megill later this week in Philadelphia.
Jun 14 2025Megill (5-5) took the loss against Tampa Bay on Saturday, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out five batters over 3.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill's final line wasn't disastrous for fantasy managers who started him since half of the six runs he allowed were unearned due to his own fielding error, but this was nonetheless an uninspiring outing by the right-hander. He actually held a 2-1 lead after three frames, but things fell apart for Megill in the fourth. In that inning, he served up a leadoff homer to Junior Caminero, then gave up three more hits, issued two walks, hit a batter and uncorked a wild pitch before being pulled with two outs and the bases loaded. Perhaps the only positive from Megill's performance is that he managed to notch five punchouts despite the short outing, reaching that mark for the ninth time over his past 10 games. Megill has posted an excellent 11.7 K/9 on the campaign, but his 3.95 ERA and 1.36 WHIP are less impressive.
Jun 11 2025Megill might be the odd man out of the Mets' rotation when Frankie Montas (lat) and Sean Manaea (oblique) are ready to come off the injured list. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Both veteran pitchers are currently on rehab assignments, with Montas on target for a late-June season debut and Manaea tracking to join the 26-man roster in early July. Even if the Mets stick with a six-man rotation at that point, they'll have seven starting pitchers available. Megill and David Peterson both have a minor-league option remaining, but the latter has been the more consistent pitcher this season with a 2.80 ERA and 1.26 WHIP through 12 starts and 70.2 innings, compared to Megill's 3.76 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 13 starts and 64.2 innings. A trade would also solve the logjam, but as things stand, Megill might get bumped to Triple-A Syracuse in a few weeks despite being on pace for the best season of his career.
Jun 8 2025Megill (5-4) earned the win against the Rockies on Sunday, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks with five strikeouts over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill cruised through four innings before allowing two runs in the fifth. He generated an impressive 14 whiffs on 82 pitches and was backed by an early outburst from the Mets' offense. On the year, the 29-year-old owns a 3.76 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 84:31 K:BB across 64.2 innings and lines up for a home matchup with the Rays next weekend.
Jun 3 2025Megill allowed four runs on four hits and a walk while striking out seven over six innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill allowed four baserunners in the first inning, and they all came around to score. He then retired nine straight batters and 16 of the last 17 he faced, and he left with the Mets ahead 5-4. That lead didn't last, as Huascar Brazoban blew a save chance in the ninth, but it was still a show of resilience for Megill to overcome his ugly first inning. He threw 105 pitches (69 strikes) in his longest outing since he went 6.1 innings versus the Nationals on April 27. Megill is now at a 3.77 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 79:28 K:BB through 59.2 innings over 12 starts. The right-hander's next start is projected to be at Colorado this weekend.
May 28 2025Megill (4-4) picked up the win Tuesday, giving up two runs on four hits and four walks over 5.2 innings in a 6-4 victory over the White Sox. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander ran out of gas in the sixth inning, loading the bases on a single and two walks before getting the hook after 100 pitches (64 strikes), but Jose Butto got out of the jam without adding any runs to Megill's ledger. While he fell short of his second quality start of the season, Megill did collect his first win since April 21, snapping a five-start winless streak that had seen him stumble to a 6.17 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 36:12 K:BB over 23.1 innings. The 29-year-old lines up for a tough test in his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road early next week against the Dodgers.
May 21 2025Megill didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against Boston, allowing one run on four hits and one walk across 4.2 innings. He struck out 10. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a much-needed bounce-back start for Megill, who lasted just 2.2 innings his last time out and had allowed four runs in each of his three previous starts. Megill tied his season high in strikeouts despite failing to complete five innings, and he was pulled after just 85 pitches. Megill has thrown more than five innings in just three of his 10 starts. In 48.0 innings, Megill owns a 3.56 ERA and a 66:23 K:BB.
May 16 2025Megill (3-4) took the loss against the Yankees on Friday, allowing four runs on four hits and five walks while striking out four across 2.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill was able to get through the first two innings without much resistance. However, the 29-year-old right-hander ran into trouble in the third frame, when he allowed seven baserunners and four runs and was mercifully lifted after issuing a bases-loaded walk to Oswald Peraza. Despite not making it out of the third inning, Megill tossed 72 pitches (37 strikes). He has yielded four earned runs in each of his last three starts, and for the season he has a 3.74 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 56:22 K:BB across 43.1 innings. Megill is slated to take on the Red Sox at Fenway Park next week.
May 10 2025Megill (3-3) pitched 4.2 innings in a loss against the Cubs on Saturday, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out seven batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill continues to rack up punchouts -- he's now struck out at least six batters in each of his past four starts -- but he otherwise struggled to contain Chicago's top-scoring offense. The right-hander fell behind by two runs after the first half-inning, and he gave up a single run in each of the third and fourth frames, with the final one coming on a Dansby Swanson solo homer. Megill began the campaign by allowing no more than two earned runs in each of his first five starts, but he's faded a bit of late, yielding three or more runs in each of his past three outings. That's pushed his season ERA up to a still-solid 3.10.
May 4 2025Megill allowed four runs on four hits and three walks while striking out six over five innings, taking a no-decision in Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader versus the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill allowed a two-run home run in the second inning and ran into more trouble in the third, allowing a two-run lead to slip away in that frame. This was his worst start of the season so far, and it was also the second outing in a row he's allowed a homer. The right-hander still has a strong 2.50 ERA with a 1.17 WHIP and 45:15 K:BB over 36 innings across seven starts. Megill will look to get back on track in his next projected start, a tough home matchup versus the Cubs.
May 3 2025Megill's scheduled start against St. Louis on Saturday won't take place because the game has been postponed due to inclement weather. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Saturday's matchup has been rescheduled for Sunday, when the teams will play a split doubleheader. The righty is slated to pitch in Game 2 of Sunday's twin bill, per Tim Healey of Newsday, and he'll look to notch a second straight quality start.
Apr 21 2025Megill (3-2) allowed a hit and four walks over 5.1 scoreless innings Monday, striking out 10 and earning a win against Philadelphia. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill mowed through the Phillies and produced his first double-digit strikeout performance since his 2021 rookie campaign. Outside of a bases-loaded jam in the third inning, he didn't face much of a threat despite throwing only 53 of 92 pitches for strikes. Megill generated a season-high 14 whiffs. He dropped his ERA to a terrific 1.09 with a 30:11 K:BB through 24.2 frames. Megill's next start is expected to be in Washington this weekend.
Apr 15 2025Megill (2-2) took the loss Tuesday against the Twins after giving up four runs (two earned) on eight hits and no walks in five innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Megill started his outing with two scoreless innings, the following three frames were a bit more troublesome. Two of Megill's runs went unearned due to Francisco Lindor's fielding error in the third inning, and the right-hander gave up two runs across his final two frames before his night ended. Just one of the eight hits Megill allowed went for extra bases, though. Despite submitting a 1.34 WHIP over 19.1 innings (four starts), Megill has limited the damage by turning in a 1.40 ERA and 20:7 K:BB ahead of his next scheduled start against the Cardinals at home this weekend.
Apr 9 2025Megill (2-1) took the loss Wednesday, giving up two unearned runs on six hits and three walks over four-plus innings as the Mets fell 5-0 to the Marlins. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was locked into a pitcher's duel with Max Meyer through four innings, but the first three Miami hitters in the fifth reached base thanks in part to a Brett Baty throwing error, and two of them wound up scoring. Megill got an early hook thanks to an elevated pitch count, as he tossed 56 of 90 pitches for strikes -- including an impressive 31 called or swinging strikes -- before exiting. He'll take a 0.63 ERA and 17:7 K:BB through 14.1 innings into his next start, which is scheduled to come on the road early next week in Minnesota.
Apr 4 2025Megill (2-0) earned the win over the Blue Jays on Friday, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out four over 5.1 shutout innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill has been strong to begin the season, giving up one run on five hits and four walks while striking out 10 over his first 10.1 innings. He threw 48 of 82 pitches for strikes in his second start of the campaign, racking up nine whiffs. His fastball was back down to an average of 95.3 mph, just a little under his 2024 season average and 1.1 mph less than his season debut. The right-hander is tentatively projected to make his next start at home versus the Marlins next week.
Mar 29 2025Megill (1-0) came away with the win Friday against the Astros after allowing one run on three hits and a walk while striking out six batters in five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill took a perfect game into the fourth inning Friday, but a quick pair of singles and a sacrifice fly from Yordan Alvarez gave Houston what would ultimately be their only run of the day. Megill needed 77 pitches to get through his five innings and averaged 96.4 mph on his 39 fastballs, which is a tick up from the 95.5 mph he averaged last season. Overall, it was a very good showing from the 29-year-old righty, and he'll get a chance to build on it during the Mets' first home series next week against the Jays.
Mar 23 2025Megill has been awarded a spot in the Mets' rotation, and he'll start the team's second game of the season March 28 against Houston, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill's spot in the rotation was a foregone conclusion with Sean Manaea (oblique) and Frankie Montas (lat) out for the beginning of the campaign. Megill solidified the decision with a strong spring during which he posted a 4.24 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 18:4 K:BB over 17 innings. Clay Holmes has been named New York's Opening Day starter, and he'll be followed in the rotation by Megill, Griffin Canning, David Peterson and Kodai Senga.
Mar 17 2025Megill is expected to start the second game of the Mets' season-opening series in Houston, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: That would line the right-hander up to face the Astros on March 28 after Clay Holmes gets the nod Opening Day, with Griffin Canning, David Peterson and Kodai Senga following in the rotation. Megill has looked good this spring, posting a 13:2 K:BB over 11.2 innings, and he should get a few turns through the rotation to establish himself as a reliable option with Sean Manaea (oblique) not set to return until at least mid-April, and Frankie Montas (lat) on the shelf into May.
Mar 12 2025Megill gave up two hits and a walk over four scoreless innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old right-hander was essentially gifted a rotation spot to begin the season when Sean Manaea (oblique) and Frankie Montas (lat) went down with injuries, but Megill has earned the assignment so far this spring with a 1.35 ERA and 7:2 K:BB over 6.2 innings. He's always had intriguing stuff, highlighted by a 27.0 percent strikeout rate over 78 regular-season innings in the majors last year, but to this point in his career a true breakout has eluded him.
Feb 24 2025Megill appears likely to have a spot in the Opening Day rotation if Sean Manaea (oblique) begins the season on the injured list, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Frankie Montas (lat) was already expected to be sidelined into May, so the Mets' rotation depth is being tested early. Kodai Senga, Clay Holmes and David Peterson are the only locks for starting jobs right now, with Megill, Griffin Canning and Paul Blackburn (back) competing for the remaining spots, but if New York sticks with its plan to use a six-man rotation, there would be room for all three. The Mets have three off days in the first 15 days of their schedule however, so they could delay those plans until mid-April.
Feb 20 2025Megill entered camp further along than most Mets starters and was slated to throw three innings of live batting practice this week, Andrew Tredinnick of NorthJersey.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He already threw two innings in a live batting practice session and is ahead of Paul Blackburn (back) and Griffin Canning, the two other starters Megill is competing with for the final two spots in the Mets' six-man rotation. Once the trio starts pitching in games this spring, their performance will take precedence over who got built up quickest in camp, but it's at least good to know Megill is healthy and throwing. His goal this season is to trust his stuff and attack hitters in the zone more in order to keep his pitch count low after going six-plus innings in just four of his 15 starts in 2024.
Feb 11 2025Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Tuesday that Megill will be stretched out as a starting pitcher this spring, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mets' current plan is to open the season with a six-man rotation, and Megill will be in the mix for one of those last two spots along with David Peterson, Griffin Canning and Paul Blackburn (back). Megill could eventually shift to a relief role, although he does have minor-league options left; therefore, the righty could also open the season in the Triple-A Syracuse rotation.
Jan 9 2025The Mets and Megill avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He had been eligible for arbitration for the first time. Megill put up a 27 percent strikeout rate in 16 appearances (15 starts) with the Mets in 2024 but might have to settle for a bullpen job to open 2025.
Oct 5 2024Megill is on the Mets' roster for the NLDS versus Philadelphia. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill was left off New York's wild-card series roster but is active for the NLDS. The right-hander started 15 of the 16 games in which he pitched during the regular season and compiled a 4.04 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 91:32 K:BB over 78 total innings. Megill will likely work in long relief against the Phillies and could be used in that capacity in Game 1 with Kodai Senga likely on a limited pitch count.
Oct 1 2024Megill is not on the Mets' roster for the National League Wild Card Series against the Brewers, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill wasn't going to be available to pitch in the series after throwing 100 pitches over 5.2 innings Monday in Atlanta, so the Mets will carry a long reliever in Max Kranick instead. Should the Mets advance to the NLDS, Megill is a good bet to be added to their roster at that time.
Sep 29 2024Megill will start Game 1 of Monday's doubleheader with Atlanta, Andy Martino of SNY.tv reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill will get another turn in the rotation before the end of the regular season as New York will be forced to play a doubleheader with Atlanta on Monday. The Mets need to win one of the two contests to clinch a spot in the Wild Card round beginning Tuesday. Megill has compiled a 1.80 ERA and 0.95 WHIP with 22 strikeouts over 20 innings in four starts in September.
Sep 23 2024Megill did not factor into the decision in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Phillies, allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out six over four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill gave up a first-inning run while needing 28 pitches to get through the frame. He made quick work of the Phillies hitters in the second and third but needed another 25 pitches to make it through the fourth and saw his day end there after throwing 83 pitches. The Mets would hope to get a bit more length out of Megill in his penultimate start of the season but won't take any risks while in a tight race for the final wild-card spot in the National League. Megill has a 3.98 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 83:30 K:BB in 72.1 innings and lines up for a start against the Brewers over the weekend.
Sep 17 2024Megill (4-5) earned the win Tuesday against the Nationals, allowing one unearned run on two hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The New York right-hander posted his second consecutive quality start, third overall, with this 94-pitch performance. Megill allowed just one extra-base hit -- a double by Dylan Crews in the second -- working around an unearned run in third en route to his 21st career win. The hard-throwing 29-year-old averaged 96.3 mph on his fastball, up 0.7 mph from his normal, and has now pitched to a 2.76 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 28:9 K:BB across 29.1 innings in the second half. Megill looks to continue his impressive work against the division-leading Phillies in next start, scheduled for this weekend.
Sep 14 2024Megill is expected to make his next start Tuesday against the Nationals at Citi Field, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said that Megill would stick in the rotation after striking out nine over six shutout innings Monday against the Blue Jays, the right-hander will have to wait more than a week to make his next turn. While Megill would be on normal rest for Saturday's game in Philadelphia or five days' rest for Sunday's series finale, the Mets are instead realigning their rotation to have Luis Severino and David Peterson start those respective games. The shuffling will allow the team's top pitcher, Sean Manaea, to start every five days down the stretch, as the Mets push for a wild-card spot. Manaea will take the hill for Monday's series opener versus the Nationals and will be followed by Megill and Jose Quintana, on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Manaea and Megill will both be on track for two-start weeks, with the two lining up for starts in next weekend's home series versus the Phillies.
Sep 10 2024Manager Carlos Mendoza said Tuesday that Megill will get at least one more turn through the rotation, and the right-hander tentatively lines up to pitch Sunday against the Phillies, Tim Healey of Newsdayreports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old could also be pushed back to start Monday versus the Nationals, but regardless of the specifics, he'll receive another turn through the rotation since Paul Blackburn's (hand/back) return from the injured list has been pushed back. Megill has been a solid depth starter for the Mets this year with a 4.48 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 13 appearances, and he's coming off one of his best starts of the campaign as he held Toronto scoreless over six frames Monday.
Sep 9 2024Megill didn't factor into the decision Monday against Toronto, allowing one hit and two walks with nine strikeouts across six scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old made another turn in the rotation Monday with Paul Blackburn (hand) not ready to come off the IL. Megill made his case to remain a starter, fanning nine Blue Jays as part of his second scoreless start of the season. Megill has a 2.35 ERA with an 18:4 K:BB across 15.1 innings during his last three starts. If he makes another start, it would likely come against the Phillies this weekend.
Sep 8 2024Megill is available out of the bullpen Sunday against the Reds, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander allowed four runs with a 9:2 K:BB over 9.1 frames in the past two turns through the rotation for the Mets, but he'll shift to the bullpen with Paul Blackburn (hand) returning from the injured list Monday in Toronto. Megill could be called upon for a spot start or two down the stretch, but for now he'll operate in a long-relief role.
Sep 5 2024Megill came away with a no-decision in Wednesday's 8-3 win over the Red Sox, giving up three runs on five hits and a walk over four-plus innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mets handed the right-hander a four-run lead in the bottom of the first inning on a Jesse Winker grand slam, but he nearly squandered it in the third. When Megill then gave up a leadoff single to begin the fifth, manager Carlos Mendoza went to his bullpen. Megill hasn't pitched terribly since rejoining the big-league rotation at the end of August, posting a 3.86 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 9:2 K:BB in 9.1 innings over two outings, but he's likely headed to the bullpen with Paul Blackburn (hand) on track to return early next week.
Aug 31 2024Megill (3-5) picked up the win in Friday's 5-1 win over the White Sox, allowing one run on five hits and a walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his first big-league start since July 31, Megill got the softest possible opponent in the White Sox, but he took advantage to record his first MLB win since June 16. With Paul Blackburn (hand) sidelined into September and Christian Scott (elbow) just beginning to ramp back up, Megill figures to get at least one more start for the Mets as they try to stay in the wild-card race. The right-hander will take a 4.82 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 61:23 K:BB through 52.1 innings into his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home next week against the Red Sox.
Aug 30 2024The Mets recalled Megill from Triple-A Syracuse to start Friday's game against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As expected, Megill will fill Paul Blackburn's (hand) vacated spot in the rotation and face off against the White Sox. In his last three starts in Syracuse, Megill has a 4.15 ERA with a 21:5 K:BB across 17.1 innings. He's logged a 5.17 ERA in 10 appearances (nine starts) with the Mets in 2024.
Aug 28 2024Megill will be recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to start Friday's game against the White Sox, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Paul Blackburn set to miss some time due to a hand injury, Megill is now set to come up from the minors to fill the open spot in New York's rotation. The 29-year-old righty owns a 5.17 ERA and 1.43 WHIP through 47 innings in the big leagues, though he will have the benefit of facing the White Sox in his first outing back, who possess the worst scoring offense in the majors.
Aug 25 2024Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Sunday that Megill is the favorite to claim the rotation spot of Paul Blackburn (hand), Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Blackburn landed on the injured list Sunday due to a bruised hand, creating an opening for Megill to potentially rejoin the big-league rotation. Megill has spent the past few weeks at Triple-A Syracuse, where he has a 3.15 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 54:17 K:BB across 40 innings this year. The right-hander's 5.17 ERA in 10 MLB outings this season is less encouraging, however.
Aug 2 2024The Mets optioned Megill to Triple-A Syracuse on Friday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He's clearing out to make room on the roster for trade-deadline acquisition Paul Blackburn, who has officially been added to the roster. Megill will join the rotation at Syracuse to stay stretched out in case he's needed for a start in the majors during the final two months.
Jul 31 2024Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Wednesday that Megill will move to the bullpen following the acquisition of right-hander Paul Blackburn on Tuesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mendoza suggested the move to a relief role could be temporary, as the Mets want to keep Megill stretched out and may eventually send him back to Triple-A Syracuse to make regular starts. At least for the time being, however, the big right-hander will be the odd man out of the Mets' five-man rotation and will operate as a multi-inning reliever.
Jul 28 2024Megill (2-5) took the loss Saturday as the Mets fell 4-0 to Atlanta, giving up four runs on five hits -- including three home runs -- and two walks over six-plus innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his first big-league start since June 29, Megill looked like he was headed for a pitchers' duel with rookie Spencer Schwellenbach until Marcell Ozuna and Matt Olson clubbed back-to-back solo shots in the fourth inning. Eddie Rosario would then help chase Megill from the game with a third solo blast to lead off the seventh. With Kodai Senga (calf) lost for the season and Christian Scott (elbow) lacking a clear return date, Megill will likely get an extended run in the rotation unless the Mets bring in help at the trade deadline. The right-hander hasn't made a strong case for the job however, posting a 5.20 ERA and 1.40 WHIP through nine MLB starts this season.
Jul 27 2024The Mets recalled Megill from Triple-A Syracuse ahead of his start Saturday versus Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Christian Scott set to miss some time due to an elbow injury, Megill will now return to the majors in order to fill the opening in New York's rotation. The 28-year-old allowed 12 earned runs in 13.1 innings across his last three starts in the big leagues, but he has improved since moving to Triple-A (4.05 ERA in 13.1 IP) and will match up with an Atlanta offense that ranks 21st in MLB with 428 runs scored on the year. Kodai Senga (calf) was placed on the 15-day injured list.
Jul 25 2024Megill will be recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to start Saturday against Atlanta, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: An injury to Christian Scott (elbow) opened up a spot in the Mets' six-man rotation, and rather than return to a traditional five-man schedule, the team will call upon Megill to fill the gap. The 28-year-old righty owns a 5.08 ERA and 1.44 WHIP through 39 innings in the majors this season, though he was able to get through five frames while only giving up one unearned run and two hits during his latest Triple-A outing.
Jun 30 2024The Mets optioned Megill to Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday, ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As expected, Megill will return to the minors after he was knocked around for six earned runs over 5.1 innings in Saturday's 9-6 loss to Houston. Over his five starts in June, the right-hander turned in a 7.43 ERA and 1.74 WHIP across 23 innings. The Mets are likely to call up Christian Scott from Triple-A Syracuse later this week to replace Megill in the rotation.
Jun 29 2024The Mets optioned Megill to Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill started Saturday's 9-6 loss to Houston, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks with six strikeouts across 5.1 innings. He didn't factor into the decision. As the Mets maneuver around Edwin Diaz's 10-game suspension, they're expected to call up a reliever to fill Megill's spot and eat innings in the coming days before having Christian Scott or Jose Butto brought up to start in Megill's regular rotation slot. By rule, Megill will have to stay at Triple-A for 15 days, which means he likely won't be back on the active roster until after the All-Star break.
Jun 22 2024Megill (2-4) took the loss against the Cubs on Saturday, allowing six runs on five hits and three walks with six strikeouts over three innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill allowed six baserunners and five runs in a disastrous 38-pitch first inning. He managed six strikeouts over the next two frames but also surrendered a solo home run to Christopher Morel and was replaced to open the fourth at 78 pitches. The outing was Megill's worst of the season, and he has now yielded 15 earned runs over 17.2 innings in four June starts. He owns a 4.81 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 43:16 K:BB through 33.2 innings in 2024 and lines up to face the Astros next week.
Jun 16 2024Megill (2-3) pitched five innings to get the win Sunday vs the Padres. He gave up two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill worked around jams in the first and fifth innings to pick up his second win in his last three starts. The 28-year-old righty has struggled getting deep into games, as he's pitched more than five innings in only one of his six starts this season. Despite this, he's been a steadying presence in the Mets' rotation with a 3.52 ERA and 1.30 WHIP.
Jun 12 2024Megill (1-3) took the loss Tuesday as the Mets were downed 4-2 by the Marlins, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was dominant early, fanning eight of the first 14 batters he faced, but Megill faded in the fifth inning and got the hook after 87 pitches (57 strikes). He's been impressive in four starts since returning from a shoulder strain, posting a 3.32 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 28:8 K:BB through 21.2 innings. Megill will try to give the Mets a little more length in his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home this weekend against the Padres.
Jun 3 2024Megill (1-2) picked up the win Monday against Washington, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks. He struck out four in five innings of work. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill made his third start since returning from a shoulder injury on May 20, notching his first win. The right-hander gave up his first home run of the season, a two-run shot by Joey Gallo in the fourth inning. Despite earning the win, the 28-year-old yielded four earned runs and recorded just four strikeouts, both season-worsts. Megill has now compiled a 3.00 ERA, a 1.24 WHIP and a 24:9 K:BB across 21 innings. He will look to improve in his next start, tentatively scheduled for next Tuesday versus Miami.
May 29 2024Megill came away with a no-decision in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Dodgers, allowing three hits and a walk over seven scoreless innings. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mets wound up getting swept in the twin bill, but that was no fault of Megill's. The right-hander generated 32 called or swinging strikes among his 98 pitches in his best performance of the season, and he left the mound with the Mets ahead 2-0 only to watch the bullpen blow the lead and lose the game in 10 innings. Megill has an impressive 16:3 K:BB through 12 innings since returning from a shoulder strain, and he'll look for his first win of 2024 when he makes his next start, which is likely to come at home this weekend against the Diamondbacks.
May 27 2024Megill and the Mets will not play Monday after their game versus the Dodgers was postponed due to inclement weather, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The contest will be made up as part of a doubleheader Tuesday. Megill and Gavin Stone -- who had been slated to start Monday's game -- will presumably be pushed back a day.
May 21 2024Megill (0-2) took the loss against Cleveland on Monday, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out seven batters over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill made his first big-league start since exiting his season debut March 31 with a right shoulder strain. He had a nearly full workload with 86 pitches and allowed just four hits over five frames, but three of them came consecutively in the first inning, resulting in a pair of runs. Though that was enough to saddle him with the loss, this was a promising return for Megill, who should settle into New York's rotation moving forward after racking up a career-high 25 starts and 126.1 innings last year.
May 20 2024The Mets activated Megill (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill is set to rejoin the Mets' rotation Monday in Cleveland after missing all of April and much of May with a right shoulder strain. He was excellent during his rehab assignment, allowing just one earned run with a 23:1 K:BB over 14 innings. Megill threw 74 pitches in his fourth and final rehab start, so he should be good for 90 or so Monday.
May 18 2024Megill (shoulder) is scheduled to return from the 15-day injured list to start Monday's series opener versus the Guardians in Cleveland, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After exiting in his season debut March 31 with a right shoulder strain and landing on the IL, Megill is finally ready to make his second start with the Mets nearly seven weeks later. According to Puma, Megill said the injury was caused by the lower arm slot he used on his curveball, but the right-hander reported no issues with throwing his breaking pitches during his four-start minor-league rehab assignment. Megill most recently tossed 5.1 shutout innings and 74 pitches in his final rehab start for Triple-A Syracuse on May 12, so he's not expected to be under any major workload restrictions as he steps back into the big-league rotation.
May 15 2024Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said that Megill (shoulder) will return from the 15-day injured list to start either Sunday in Miami or Monday in Cleveland, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Earlier in the week, Mendoza was non-committal regarding what type of role Megill might handle once activated, but the Mets cleared up their rotation logjam a bit Wednesday, when Jose Butto was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse. Joey Lucchesi was called up from Triple-A to start Wednesday's game in Philadelphia, but he could be sent back to the minors shortly thereafter in preparation for Megill's return to the rotation. Megill has performed well over his four minor-league rehab starts across stops with High-A Brooklyn, Double-A Binghamton and Syracuse, striking out 23 while allowing just one earned run on nine hits and one walk over 14 innings.
May 13 2024Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Monday that he hasn't yet committed to including Megill (shoulder) in the rotation once he's activated from the 15-day injured list, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill, who has been on the IL since April 1 with a shoulder strain, has been building up as a starter during his rehab assignment. In his fourth rehab start this past Sunday with Triple-A Syracuse, Megill struck out six over 5.1 scoreless innings while tossing 74 pitches, but with the big-league rotation looking crowded at the moment, the right-hander may have to settle for a multi-inning relief role upon his reinstatement. The Mets could have Megill make another rehab start in order to bide more time in deciding what his role may look like prior to activating him.
May 7 2024Megill (shoulder) will make another rehab start for Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill has fared well across his first two rehab outings, giving up one earned run through 4.2 innings while striking out 10 batters without surrendering a walk. If Sunday's start ends up being the 28-year-old's final rehab appearance, he would be lined up to potentially start for the Mets on Friday, May 17 in Miami.
May 3 2024Megill (shoulder) threw 2.2 innings in a rehab start for Double-A Binghamton on Thursday, allowing one run on two hits. He struck out four without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While the outing seems short, Megill threw 51 pitches in his second rehab appearance after firing two perfect innings for Binghamton on April 27. The Mets are moving to a six-man rotation in the short term by bringing up top prospect Christian Scott on Saturday, but Megill's current schedule has him in sync with Jose Butto rather than struggling fifth starter Adrian Houser. Megill will make at least one more rehab start, and his 10:0 K:BB through 4.2 innings against Double-A hitters suggests he's already 100 percent stuff-wise, but New York may not be in a rush to activate the 28-year-old righty if there's no obvious vacancy for him in the rotation.
Apr 28 2024Megill (shoulder) is scheduled to make the second start of his minor-league rehab assignment Thursday with Double-A Binghamton, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: On the shelf since April 1 with a right shoulder strain, Megill appears to be nearing the finish line of his recovery process after he began in his rehab assignment Saturday with High-A Brooklyn. Megill struck out six over two perfect innings with Brooklyn, but he'll move up a rung on the minor-league ladder and look to build up his pitch count to around 60 when he takes the mound again Thursday. After his upcoming outing with Binghamton, Megill will likely require one more rehab start beyond that before being deemed ready to rejoin the Mets rotation.
Apr 26 2024Megill (shoulder) will start a rehab assignment Saturday at High-A Brooklyn, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander suffered a shoulder strain in his season debut March 31 against the Brewers, but he's now recovered from the injury and is ready for game action. Megill figures to require at least two starts in the minors before being cleared to rejoin the Mets' rotation.
Apr 1 2024Megill (shoulder), whom the Mets placed on the 15-day injured list earlier Monday, won't throw for the next five days before beginning his ramp-up process, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though the injury that landed him on the shelf is being characterized as a right shoulder strain rather than right shoulder soreness, Megill seems optimistic that he won't miss significant time and could even be back around when he's first eligible to return in mid-April. A precise timeline for Megill's return won't come into focus until he reaches the point in his throwing program that he's facing hitters. While 40-man roster members Joey Lucchesi or Jose Butto would seem to be the most logical candidates to replace Megill in the rotation, both were optioned to Triple-A Syracuse in spring training and thus aren't eligible to be promoted until April 12 unless the Mets place a player on the IL in a corresponding move. As such, the Mets may turn to a non-roster player to make spot starts for Megill's next two turns through the rotation.
Mar 31 2024Megill (0-1), who took the loss Sunday against the Brewers, was removed after four innings due to "tenderness" in his right shoulder and will undergo an MRI, Steve Gelbs of SNY reports. The right-hander struck out four and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old was in and out of trouble all afternoon as he threw just 44 of his 78 pitches for strikes, but he was able to limit the damage before the shoulder injury prompted his exit. The Mets are already shorthanded for starting pitching with Kodai Senga (shoulder) on the injured list, and Megill's availability for his next turn through the rotation is now up in the air.
Mar 20 2024Mets manager Carlos Mendoza announced Wednesday that Megill made the club's season-opening rotation, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old entered camp in competition to be the Mets' No. 5 starter with Kodai Senga (shoulder) set to begin the season on the injured list, and Megill delivered a solid showing during spring training with a 3.45 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 16:4 K:BB in 15.2 frames to win the job. The right-hander got stretched out to 76 pitches in his previous Grapefruit League start over the weekend and should begin the campaign with a full starter's workload. Megill made 25 starts for New York last season and had a 4.70 ERA 1.58 WHIP and 105:58 K:BB over 126.1 innings.
Mar 12 2024Megill allowed one run on three hits over four innings in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins. He struck out two without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Aside from a second-inning solo shot by Tim Anderson, Megill looked sharp once again as he built up to 61 pitches (36 strikes). With Kodai Senga (shoulder) beginning the season on the IL, Megill appears ticketed for an Opening Day rotation spot, and he's earned it with an impressive 15:2 K:BB over 12 spring innings.
Mar 7 2024Megill struck out six and walked two over three scoreless, no-hit innings during Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander came into the game a favorite to secure the rotation spot opened up by Kodai Senga's shoulder injury, and Megill looked the part against a New York lineup that featured mainly younger players like Anthony Volpe, Austin Wells and Everson Pereira. Megill did plunk Oswald Peraza with a pitch and threw just 29 of 49 pitches for strikes, but he got some big whiffs with his new splitter. The 28-year-old right-hander has allowed only one run through his first eight spring innings with an impressive 13:2 K:BB.
Mar 4 2024Megill has emerged as the favorite to win the Mets' No. 5 starter job, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old right-hander added a splitter to his arsenal over the winter, and so far the results have been encouraging, as Megill has allowed one run over his first five Grapefruit League innings with a 7:0 K:BB. A pitch that can generate more whiffs could be crucial for his fortunes -- after posting a strikeout rate north of 25 percent in the majors in 2021 and 2022, Megill saw that number drop to 18.5 percent last year. The Mets have a hole to fill in their Opening Day rotation due to Kodai Senga's shoulder strain, and while Jose Butto and Joey Lucchesi still have a chance to make their case for the No. 5 job to start the season due to Senga's expected absence, it appears to be Megill's to lose.
Feb 25 2024Megill gave up a run on two hits and struck out three over two innings in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a shaky first inning that saw him plunk Brendan Donovan to lead off the game before uncorking a wild pitch, Megill breezed through a 1-2-3 second frame. The right-hander came into camp looking to win the Mets' No. 5 starter role, but Kodai Senga's shoulder strain has opened up a second spot in the Opening Day rotation. Megill endured a rough 2023, but he worked on adding a splitter to his arsenal in the offseason and could offer more strikeout upside than the likes of Joey Lucchesi and Jose Butto, his main competition in the rotation battle.
Feb 22 2024Megill will be among the competitors for the fifth spot in the Mets' rotation following the injury to Kodai Senga (shoulder), Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jose Quintana, Sean Manaea, Luis Severino and Adrian Houser appear locked into the first four spots, leaving Megill, Joey Lucchesi, Jose Butto and Max Kranick to fight for the final one. Megill offers arguably the best upside of the bunch, but he struggled in 2023, collecting a 4.70 ERA and 105:58 K:BB over 126.1 innings.
Sep 30 2023Megill (9-8) picked up the win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader sweep of the Phillies, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over 7.1 innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander saved his best performance of the season for last, as he hadn't worked more than six innings in any start this season. The quality start was Megill's sixth of 2023, but half of them have come in his last six outings -- a stretch in which he posted a 2.55 ERA and 31:12 K:BB through 35.1 innings. The impressive finish to the campaign should make the 28-year-old a favorite to secure an Opening Day rotation spot with the Mets in 2024, provided the team doesn't engage in another winter spending spree.
Sep 29 2023Megill's next start will be pushed back after Friday's game between the Phillies and Mets was postponed due to inclement weather, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The two teams will now play a doubleheader Saturday, with Megill presumably getting the ball in one of those contests. It will be the second start in a row against the Phillies for Megill, who yielded three runs over six innings in a no-decision his last time out.
Sep 22 2023Megill did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk over six innings against the Phillies. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill was cruising through five scoreless innings before running out of steam in the sixth inning. His run-free outing was undone by a three-run homer given up to J.T. Realmuto in the sixth inning. The 28-year-old pitcher has struggled to the tune of a 4.92 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 98:56 K:BB over 119 innings this season. Megill is currently scheduled to make his last start of the year against the Phillies at home.
Sep 17 2023Megill (8-8) took the loss Saturday as the Mets fell 3-2 to the Reds, giving up three runs (two earned) on nine hits and two walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander came one out short of his fifth quality start of the season, tossing 56 of 97 pitches for strikes in a solid effort, but New York wasn't able to supply Megill with much run support. He's allowed three runs or less in six straight starts with a 3.13 ERA, but his 1.55 WHIP and 28:15 K:BB through 31.2 innings over that stretch suggest he still has some work to do to lock down a rotation spot for 2024. Megill's next outing lines up for a road series next weekend in Philadelphia.
Sep 10 2023Megill allowed two hits and four walks over five shutout innings in Sunday's win over the Twins. He struck out two and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill faced some issues with his command but was able to work around a couple of threats to turn in five clean frames. He was locked into a duel with Minnesota's Pablo Lopez and the Mets weren't able to break the scoreless tie until the ninth inning. Megill has allowed three or fewer runs in five straight outings, posting a 3.12 ERA during that span and lowering his season mark to 5.03. His next start is currently projected to be at home against the Reds.
Sep 4 2023Megill (8-7) earned the win Sunday, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against the Mariners. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Megill managed to claim his eighth victory of the season, he fell two outs shy of a quality start and served up a pair of home runs. Megill also struggled with control, walking a pair of batters and logging a hit by pitch. Over his last four appearances (21 innings), Megill owns a 3.86 ERA to pair with a 24:9 K:BB. He's tentatively scheduled to take on the Twins for his next start.
Aug 28 2023Megill did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing one run on five hits and a walk over six innings against the Rangers. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill turned in quite a performance against a formidable Rangers offense, allowing just one run in the sixth inning while logging a season-high eight strikeouts. The 28-year-old right-hander had struggled to a 6.86 ERA in his prior four starts since rejoining the Mets' rotation earlier this month. Overall, Megill sports a 5.29 ERA with a 1.68 WHIP and 82:47 K:BB across 20 starts (97 innings) this season. He'll look to build on Monday's performance in his next outing, currently scheduled for this weekend against the Mariners.
Aug 23 2023Megill (7-7) took the loss Tuesday as the Mets fell 3-2 to Atlanta, giving up three runs on eight hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander limited the damage despite being in constant trouble, as Atlanta had at least one runner in scoring position in every inning Megill worked -- something exacerbated by the four wild pitches he was charged with. Since rejoining the rotation in August, he's stumbled to a 6.86 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 16:7 K:BB through 19.2 innings, but the Mets don't have many other options. His next turn comes around early next week for a home start against the Rangers.
Aug 17 2023Megill (7-6) earned the win Wednesday, allowing two runs on five hits and four walks over five innings against the Pirates. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill allowed the leadoff man to reach base in each of the first three innings, with the latter coming home to score on a Bryan Reynolds home run. However, the right-hander was still able to get through five innings of work despite also matching his season high with four walks. It marked Megill's first win since June 16 against the Cardinals, though he still holds a 7.20 ERA through three August starts, along with a 11:5 K:BB.
Aug 11 2023Megill (6-6) yielded six runs (five earned) on nine hits and a walk over 5.1 innings Friday, striking out three and taking a loss against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill looked solid through three shutout innings before Atlanta broke the scoreless tie in the fourth. He's been tagged with 22 earned runs over his last 22 frames, driving his season ERA up to 5.64. The 28-year-old has allowed at least four runs in seven of his 17 MLB appearances. Assuming he gets another turn in the rotation, Megill is lined up to face the Pirates at home next week.
Aug 8 2023Megill is scheduled to start Friday's game against Atlanta at Citi Field. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He'll pick up a second straight turn through the New York rotation following last week's trade that sent Justin Verlander to Houston. After returning from Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday to make his first appearance for the Mets since June 21, Megill took a loss against the Orioles while giving up five earned runs on nine hits and zero walks over 4.2 innings. He now sits on a 5.45 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 61:39 K:BB in 76 innings over 16 starts with the Mets this season, and those poor ratios should mostly keep him off the fantasy radar outside of NL-only leagues.
Aug 5 2023The Mets recalled Megill ahead of his scheduled start Saturday against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill will get another chance in the rotation after both Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander were moved at the trade deadline. His ERA and WHIP have only gotten worse with Triple-A Syracuse, though Megill took a step forward in his most recent start in the minors with six innings of two-run ball against Lehigh Valley.
Aug 1 2023Megill will likely be called up from Triple-A Syracuse to take Justin Verlander's spot in the Mets' rotation, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: David Peterson is set to take over for Max Scherzer, who was dealt to the Rangers this past Saturday, and the Mets will probably then turn to Megill as their other fill-in starter after moving Verlander to Houston on Tuesday afternoon. Megill, 28, carries an ugly 5.17 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 58:39 K:BB in 71.1 innings (15 starts) this season at the major-league level.
Jun 22 2023The Mets optioned Megill to Triple-A Syracuse on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After surrendering five runs (four earned) on four hits and four walks over just 2.1 frames Wednesday against Houston, Megill will head to Triple-A in order to get back on track. Megill was scheduled to pitch Tuesday against the Brewers, and there's been no word yet on who will replace him in the rotation.
Jun 21 2023Megill didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 10-8 loss to the Astros, coughing up five runs (four earned) on four hits and four walks over 2.1 innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander found the plate with only 32 of his 63 pitches and uncorked two wild pitches, but he was far from alone in having control issues as the two pitching staffs combined for 16 walks and two hit by pitches on the afternoon. It was the fourth time in his last six starts Megill failed to work past the fourth inning, and the rough stretch has sent his ERA soaring to 5.17. He'll try to get back on track in his next outing, likely to come at home early next week against the Brewers.
Jun 17 2023Megill (6-4) picked up the win in Friday's 6-1 victory over the Cardinals, allowing one run on four hits over six innings. He struck out seven without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was arguably the best performance of the season for the right-hander, who tied his season high in Ks and didn't issue a free pass for the first time in 2023 en route to his third quality start in 14 trips to the mound. Megill's been far from consistent, and since the beginning of May he carries a 5.32 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 37:23 K:BB through 44 innings even after Friday's effort. He'll look to keep building momentum in his next outing, likely to come on the road next week in Houston.
Jun 14 2023Megill is scheduled to start Friday's game versus the Cardinals at Citi Field. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Heading into the week, Megill looked to be at risk of having his turn through the rotation skipped due to team off days Monday and Thursday, but the Mets will ultimately have all five of their rotation members pick up one start apiece. Megill will thus get a chance to redeem himself after he turned in his worst start of the season in his previous outing last Friday in Pittsburgh, where he was blitzed for nine runs (seven earned) on eight hits and three walks over 3.2 innings.
Jun 11 2023The Mets could elect to skip Megill's next turn through the rotation with team off days on tap Monday and Thursday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Buck Showalter and pitching coach Jeremy Hefner were set to discuss the Mets' rotation plan for the upcoming week following Sunday's loss to the Pirates, but if New York decides to take advantage of the two off days and pare down to four starters, Megill would almost certainly find himself as the odd man out. Megill has fallen short of the thresholds for a quality start in all but two of his 13 outings this season and is sitting on a 5.14 ERA and 1.70 WHIP over 63 innings. Even if Megill is moved out of the rotation just for this week, he could lose his spot to Triple-A starters Joey Lucchesi or David Peterson if his struggles continue much longer.
Jun 10 2023Megill (5-4) took the loss Friday, allowing nine runs on eight hits and three walks over 3.2 innings against Pittsburgh. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill was rocked yet again, failing to make it out of the fourth inning as he was removed with two outs and runners on the corners. Friday's start marked the third time in his last four appearances where he allowed four or more earned runs. Over his last seven starts, the 27-year-old right hander has an ugly 6.12 ERA to go along with 20 walks in 32.1 innings. At the moment, Megill is lined up to start next week at home against the Cardinals.
Jun 3 2023Megill did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing one run on five hits and five walks over 5.1 innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill struggled with control once again Saturday, setting a season-high with five walks while hitting the strike zone on just 58 of his 103 pitches. However, the 27-year-old managed to limit damage, letting just one runner score despite allowing five hits. Though Megill owns a 5-3 record, he has stumbled to a 4.40 ERA, 5.19 FIP and a 1.50 K/BB through 59.1 innings and is lined up to make his next start against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.
May 28 2023Megill allowed six runs (four earned) on 10 hits and two walks while striking out three over four innings in a no-decision versus the Rockies on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill ran into some trouble in the third and fourth innings, but he was able to avoid the loss by exiting with the game tied at 6-6. It's the second start in a row and the fourth time this year he's failed to pitch five full innings. He's now at a 4.67 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 43:27 K:BB through 54 innings across 11 starts. Megill is tentatively set for a home start versus the Blue Jays in his next outing.
May 24 2023Megill (5-3) took the loss Tuesday against the Cubs, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out five over 3.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill made quick work of the Cubs in the opening frame but proceeded to allow four runs in the second after surrendering home runs to Seiya Suzuki and Matt Mervis in the inning. He exited the game having thrown 78 pitches after the Cubs got to him for two additional runs in the fourth following an error to begin the inning. Tuesday was the shortest outing of the season thus far for Megill but he did rack up five strikeouts for the first time since April 1. He now sits at a 4.32 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 40:25 K:BB over 50 innings and lines up for a road test against the Rockies over the weekend.
May 23 2023Megill will start for the Mets instead of Kodai Senga on Tuesday against the Cubs, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This will allow Senga to get a bit of extra rest and skip the Mets' upcoming weekend series at Coors Field. Senga will handle Wednesday's game at Wrigley Field and then next Tuesday's series opener at home against the division-rival Phillies.
May 19 2023Megill (5-2) earned the win over Tampa Bay on Thursday, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out four batters over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As usual, Megill didn't drop any jaws in the victory, but he limited the damage against him and went six innings to finish with his second quality start of the campaign. What he's lacked in electricity the right-hander has made up for in consistency -- he's struck out exactly four batters in four straight outings and has yet to give up more than four runs in an appearance this season. Megill is up to five wins on the campaign, tied for sixth-most in the majors.
May 13 2023Megill (4-2) picked up the win in Friday's 3-2 victory over the Nationals, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and four walks over five innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was far from efficient, throwing only 53 of 93 pitches for strikes, and when Megill left the mound for good after the bottom of the fifth inning, the Mets were staring at a 2-0 deficit. The team's moribund offense put three runs on the board in the top of the sixth, however, while Megill was still the pitcher of record. The 27-year-old continues to fight the strike zone and has issued at least three walks in five of his last six outings, posting a 4.91 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 21:18 K:BB through 29.1 innings over that stretch. Despite those struggles, it's not clear whether Megill or Joey Lucchesi will get bumped from the rotation when Carlos Carrasco (elbow) returns from the IL.
May 6 2023Megill (3-2) took the loss Saturday as the Mets fell 5-2 to the Rockies, giving up three runs on six hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander wasn't particularly sharp, throwing only 58 of 96 pitches for strikes, but he also didn't get much help from his offense as the Mets never led in the game. Megill will take a 4.33 ERA and 27:18 K:BB through 35.1 innings into his next start, likely to come on the road next weekend against the Nationals.
May 2 2023Megill pitched 5.2 innings against Atlanta in the second game of a doubleheader Monday, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four batters. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill got through five frames without yielding a run and carried a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning. However, he got into trouble in that frame by allowing a leadoff double and two walks to find himself in a bases-loaded, two-out jam. Eddie Rosario tagged the right-hander for a bases-clearing double, wiping out his lead and ending his outing on a sour note. Megill won his first three starts of the season but hasn't picked up a victory since. Over his past three outings, he's recorded a 6.14 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and unpalatable 10:8 K:BB over 14.2 frames.
Apr 30 2023Megill and New York won't face Atlanta on Sunday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather in Queens. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The two teams have now had two consecutive games postponed for weather-related reasons. New York and Atlanta will make up the postponement from Saturday as part of a split doubleheader Aug. 12, while Sunday's postponed contest will be made up as part of a straight doubleheader Monday. Expect Megill to take the hill for one of those two contests.
Apr 29 2023Megill had his scheduled start Saturday versus Atlanta postponed by rain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill will likely take the mound Sunday, if the rain lets up at all in Queens. The 27-year-old right-hander has pitched to an uneven 3.96 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 19:12 K:BB through 25 innings (five starts) this season with the Mets.
Apr 5 2023Megill won't make his scheduled start Thursday versus the Marlins after the game was postposed due to impending inclement weather, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mets' home opener will now be played Friday instead. Scheduled starters Megill and Edward Cabrera will get an extra day of rest and take the ball Friday.
Apr 1 2023Megill (1-0) earned the win Saturday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over five innings against Miami. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Filling in for Justin Verlander (teres major strain), Megill walked two of the first seven batters he faced Saturday, showing some of the same control issues that plagued him in spring training. He buckled down from there, however, and would go on to complete five innings on 93 pitches. Megill and David Peterson will essentially continue their spring training competition into the regular season, though it's entirely possible both pitchers stick around long term if there are additional injuries to the starting rotation.
Mar 31 2023Megill was recalled Friday from Triple-A Syracuse, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill will jump into the Mets' starting rotation Saturday at Miami as the fill-in for Justin Verlander, who is out indefinitely because of a low-grade teres major strain in his upper right arm. Megill, 27, holds a career 4.73 ERA in 137 major-league innings and probably shouldn't be considered an attractive fantasy streaming option outside of deeper mixed and NL-only leagues.
Mar 30 2023Megill will start in place of Justin Verlander (shoulder) on Saturday at Miami, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Verlander is headed to the 15-day IL after being diagnosed Thursday with a teres major strain, which opens up a rotation spot for Megill. He had been optioned out to Triple-A Syracuse just before the end of spring training. The 27-year-old right-hander posted a rough 5.13 ERA over 47.1 major-league innings last season and also struggled this spring in the Grapefruit League.
Mar 20 2023Megill gave up six runs (three earned) on six hits and five walks over 3.2 innings in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: David Peterson got the start Sunday while Megill came on in relief, and while neither pitcher was at their best, Peterson ended up with the much cleaner line in the box score. Megill did get stretched out to 78 pitches (42 strikes), but his late stumble in camp did him no favors as he tries to win the fifth starter role for the Mets. Barring a late development, Peterson should be viewed as the favorite to begin the regular season as part of the rotation.
Mar 14 2023Megill gave up three hits and a walk while striking out three over four scoreless innings during Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With the fifth spot in the Mets' rotation up for grabs due to Jose Quintana's rib injury, Megill replaced Max Scherzer as the starter Monday so the young right-hander could face big-league hitters, and he responded by shutting down a lineup that included Jazz Chisholm, Garrett Cooper and Jorge Soler. David Peterson also remains in the mix for the open rotation job and has yet to allow a run this spring himself, but Megill's performance Monday keeps him firmly in the mix.
Mar 13 2023Megill might be the favorite to open the season as the Mets' fifth starter with Jose Quintana (rib) sidelined, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: David Peterson pitched well for the Mets last season and would give the team a lefty alongside four righties in the rotation. However, Puma writes that the Mets "appear most intrigued by the idea of giving the spot to Megill," who held a 1.93 ERA over his first five starts in 2022 before his season was sidetracked by injury. Megill is healthy now, though, and has allowed just one run over his first 4.1 innings this spring. With Quintana expected to be out until around the All-Star break, the Mets might ultimately need both Megill and Peterson to make plenty of starts.
Mar 6 2023Megill might get a shot in the Mets' rotation if Jose Quintana (rib) needs time on the injured list, Mark W. Sanchez of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There's no timetable for Quintana's return, but the stress fracture in his rib is an injury which has cost other players significant time. Megill got off to a fantastic start last season but then missed significant time with biceps and shoulder issues and struggled in September as a reliever. The right-hander is healthy now, though, and has some upside if he does indeed have a rotation spot for a while. David Peterson would probably have the leg up over Megill for a spot, assuming his foot injury is indeed minor as it appears.
Mar 2 2023Megill is hoping his curveball can become a reliable fourth pitch, Abbey Mastracco of The New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander has featured a four-seam fastball, slider and changeup, and giving hitters another offering to worry about would help solidify Megill's future in the rotation. "Threw a couple [curves] today for strikes and that was the biggest thing," he said after Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins. "I'm excited to try and drop them in there and then use it as a two-strike pitch as well. If I can get that over the plate for strikes, and then with two strikes mix the variation of speed up, then go top-to-bottom zone-wise with my other pitches." A closer in college at Arizona, Megill broke camp in the Mets' rotation last year due to injuries and went 4-0 in April with a 1.93 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 27:6 K:BB through 28 innings before eventually fading and moving to the bullpen. With New York's veteran starters all healthy in camp, however, the 27-year-old isn't likely to begin 2023 in the rotation, though he should see some starts throughout the year with the Mets planning to use a six-man rotation during long stretches with no off days, according to Tim Britton of The Athletic.
Feb 18 2023Megill will be stretched out as a starter in camp but is likely to begin the regular season as part of Triple-A Syracuse's rotation, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mets have five veteran starters on guaranteed contracts, which means when everyone is healthy, depth options like Megill will either work out of the big-league bullpen or head down to Syracuse. As the 27-year-old right-hander has minor-league options remaining, the latter route seems more likely to begin the season. Megill appeared in 15 games (nine starts) for the Mets in 2022 and was the team's Opening Day starter, posting a 2.43 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 36:8 K:BB in 33.1 innings over six starts in April and May before injuries put him off course the rest of the way.
Oct 7 2022Megill (undisclosed) was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list Friday and was included on the Mets' roster for the NL Wild Card series against the Padres, Deesha Thosar of Fox Sports reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill landed on the COVID-19 IL on Wednesday but quickly cleared the necessary protocols and is back on the active roster. The 27-year-old had a 5.13 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 51:13 K:BB over 47.1 innings this year and is likely to be a low-leverage option out of the bullpen this weekend.
Oct 5 2022Megill was placed on the injured list for an undisclosed reason Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mets didn't provide a reason for placing Megill on the injured list, suggesting that he's on the COVID-19 IL. Assuming that's the case, the right-hander will be eligible to return as soon as he clears the league's health and safety protocols, but it's not yet clear whether he'll be back in time for the upcoming NL Wild Card Series against the Padres, which begins Friday.
Sep 19 2022The Mets reinstated Megill (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As expected, the righty is activated prior to Monday's series-opener in Milwaukee. All nine of his big-league appearances to date in 2021 are starts, but he'll be pitching in relief for the remainder of the season. It will interesting to see how his stuff, which included a high-90s fastball prior to the shoulder injury, looks in his new role. Further, it remains to be seen whether Megill receives high-leverage innings and the opportunity for holds.
Sep 17 2022Megill (shoulder) will be reinstated from the 60-day injured list Monday, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill returned to the Mets' clubhouse Saturday after concluding his rehab assignment, but the team will wait a few days before activating him. Over six relief appearances in September, he allowed six runs on five hits and three walks while striking out nine in 5.2 innings during his rehab assignment. Once he's officially activated, the 27-year-old will pitch out of the Mets' bullpen.
Sep 14 2022Megill (shoulder) will make another rehab appearance at Triple-A Syracuse on Friday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill was sharp over his first four rehab appearances in September, but he gave up five runs on three hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning Tuesday. The Mets want to see him pitch multiple innings prior to rejoining the major-league club, so the right-hander will make at least one more appearance at Syracuse before he's in the mix to be activated.
Sep 12 2022Megill (shoulder) struck out a batter in a perfect inning in his most recent rehab outing Friday for Triple-A Syracuse. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Across his four rehab outings between Syracuse and Double-A Binghamton, Megill has now struck out eight batters over four perfect innings. Since he's covered exactly one frame in each of his appearances, Megill doesn't look like he'll be tasked with handling a multi-inning role once he's reinstated from the 60-day injured list, potentially later this week. He should fill a key setup role in front of closer Edwin Diaz as the postseason approaches.
Sep 1 2022Megill (shoulder) struck out the side after entering in relief during a rehab outing with Double-A Binghamton on Thursday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mets are set to have a fully healthy rotation shortly, as Carlos Carrasco (oblique) is likely to return during the team's weekend series against the Nationals. That leaves Megill without a spot in the starting five, though he could pitch in high-leverage situations out of the big-league bullpen once he is activated.
Aug 31 2022Megill (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with Double-A Binghamton, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill threw live batting practice Monday and apparently fared well since he was cleared to start up the rehab assignment. The right-hander shouldn't require a particularly lengthy rehab stint since he's slated to pitch out of the Mets' bullpen once he's back to full health.
Aug 26 2022Megill (shoulder) threw a bullpen session against stand-in batters Friday and is scheduled for live batting practice Monday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill has been sidelined by the shoulder injury since mid-June but is closing in on his return from the injured list. If all goes well Monday the right-hander could start a rehab assignment later next week. Megill will rejoin the Mets as a reliever, so he shouldn't require a lengthy rehab stint to get stretched out.
Aug 22 2022Megill (shoulder) will throw live batting practice Friday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill resumed mound work in mid-August and has been cleared to take another step in his recovery process by facing hitters Friday. The right-hander is expected to pitch out of the bullpen once he's cleared to return and hopes to rejoin the Mets in late August or early September.
Aug 13 2022Megill (shoulder) will throw a 15-pitch bullpen session Sunday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill's bullpen session will be his first since landing on the injured list in mid-June. Although he won't throw many pitches Sunday, he presumably won't require too much time to build back up since he's slated to pitch out of the bullpen once he's healthy. It's possible that he'll be back in action in late August or early September.
Aug 6 2022Megill (shoulder) will throw his first bullpen session next Saturday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill has been out since mid-June with a strained right shoulder. He's targeting a return in late August or early September, but he'll pitch in a relief role down the stretch, robbing him of most of his fantasy value. His long-term appeal remains intact, however, as he's expected to build back up as a starter over the winter.
Jul 29 2022Megill (shoulder) will likely work out of the bullpen once he is activated, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He began a throwing program a couple weeks ago but has not begun a rehab assignment yet. Megill made waves as a starter earlier this season, so he may be stretched out next spring after potentially helping the Mets make a playoff run while getting big outs in relief.
Jul 11 2022Megill said he plans to throw a baseball Friday for the first time since being shut down June 17 with a strained right shoulder, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill was moved to the 60-day injured list June 27, so he won't be eligible to return until mid-August even if he encounters no setbacks as he initiates his throwing program shortly before the All-Star break. According to Healey, Megill acknowledged that the uptick in velocity he's shown in 2022 compared to his rookie season has likely contributed to him landing on the IL on two occasions due to arm-related issues, so the 26-year-old may look to scale back the number of max-effort pitches he throws upon returning and instead keep his fastball more consistently around the 94-to-96 mile-per-hour range.
Jun 27 2022The Mets transferred Megill (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Monday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The transaction confirms that Megill will be sidelined for at least two months due to the strained right shoulder he sustained in his July 16 start against the Brewers. When his diagnosis was first announced, the Mets revealed that Megill would be shut down for four weeks before being re-evaluated, and the club is already bracing for the right-hander to need at least another month of ramp-up time even if he's cleared to resume throwing coming out of the All-Star break. Even though Megill has looked dominant at times when healthy this season, his prolonged absence will make it tough to justify holding him in most redraft leagues.
Jun 17 2022Megill was placed on the 15-day injured list with a strained right shoulder Friday, and he'll be shut down from throwing for four weeks before being re-evaluated, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill was removed from Thursday's start after 3.1 innings due to shoulder discomfort, and he was diagnosed with a strain after undergoing an MRI. The right-hander is likely to be sidelined until at least mid-August, as he'll require a significant ramp-up period following the lengthy shutdown. Max Scherzer (oblique) is hoping to return from the injured list in late June, but it's unclear who will step into New York's starting rotation in the meantime.
Jun 16 2022Megill exited Thursday's start against the Brewers due to right shoulder discomfort, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill missed nearly a month due to right biceps inflammation but returned to action late last week. However, he exited Thursday's matchup with a trainer in the top of the fourth inning due to a shoulder issue. The extent of the injury isn't yet clear, but the right-hander will undergo further testing Friday. Prior to his departure Thursday, Megill allowed four runs on four hits and a walk while striking out six in 3.1 innings.
Jun 11 2022Megill didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 7-3 win over the Angels, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk over 3.1 innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While his limited pitch count in his return from a month-long absence due to a biceps strain prevented Megill from lasting long enough to collect a win, he certainly appeared healthy as his first fastball clocked at 97.8 mph, and he topped out at 99.2 mph. The right-hander fired 64 pitches, 39 for strikes, before exiting and should get stretched out to something close to a regular workload in his next outing. Megill's 4.50 ERA on the year is somewhat deceptive -- toss out the start in which he got hurt, and he sports a 2.70 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 40:9 K:BB through 36.2 innings.
Jun 10 2022Megill (biceps) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list ahead of Friday's start against the Angels, Laura Albanese of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill was unavailable for nearly a month due to right biceps inflammation, but he'll return to the mound as the starter in Friday's series opener against the Angels. Prior to his absence, the right-hander posted a 4.41 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 34.2 innings over his first seven starts of the season.
Jun 8 2022Manager Buck Showalter said Megill (biceps) will be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Friday against the Angels, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill has been on the shelf with right biceps tendinitis for the past month, but he'll rejoin the Mets' starting rotation Friday in Los Angeles. The 26-year-old threw 3.2 innings during his lone rehab outing in the minors, so he'll likely have some workload restrictions in his first start back from the injured list.
Jun 7 2022Manager Buck Showalter said he's considering Megill (biceps) to start Friday or Saturday against the Angels, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander linked up with the Mets on the road trip Monday and is poised to rejoin the starting rotation after one rehab outing with Double-A Binghamton. Megill covered 3.2 innings during that start, so he'll likely face some workload limitations in his first game back from the biceps tendinitis that's sidelined him for the past month.
Jun 6 2022Megill (biceps) flew to meet up with the rest of his teammates in San Diego on Monday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill has missed nearly a month with biceps tendinitis. He struck out five batters in 3.2 rehab innings for Double-A Binghamton on Sunday, and while it previously looked like he might need one more rehab start, the fact that he's linking up with his teammates suggests his next outing may come as part of the active roster. His return date is yet to be officially confirmed, but he'd be lined up to pitch against the Angels on Saturday.
Jun 5 2022Megill (biceps) gave up two earned runs on three hits and zero walks while striking out five in 3.2 innings Sunday in a rehab start for Double-A Binghamton, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He touched 98 mph with his fastball but will likely need one more rehab start to fully stretch out, according to DiComo. That would line him up to return in the middle of the month, potentially against the Brewers on June 15 or 16.
Jun 3 2022Megill (biceps) will make a rehab start with Double-A Binghamton on Sunday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He is expected to pitch four innings if all goes well. Megill last pitched May 11 and it is unclear how many rehab starts he will need before rejoining the rotation. That said, the fact he will try to throw four frames and is being sent to an advanced affiliate suggests he may only need a couple rehab starts.
May 31 2022Megill (biceps) threw live batting practice at Citi Field on Tuesday, SportsNet New York reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill has been out for just over two weeks with right biceps tendinitis, but he wasn't shut down for long and has been making steady progress. A minor-league rehab start or two looks like his next step assuming he feels fine following Tuesday's session.
May 29 2022Megill (biceps) said Sunday that he expects to begin throwing live batting practice within the next few days, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill landed on the injured list with right biceps tendinitis May 15, but he's made strong progress in his recovery following a brief shutdown. The right-hander will be evaluated for a minor-league rehab start after he faces live hitters, and he expects to need 1-2 rehab starts prior to rejoining the major-league club.
May 23 2022Megill (biceps) played long toss Monday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill felt good afterward, and he continues to make progress towards a return. Manager Buck Showalter has already stated that Megill will need to make a rehab appearance before returning, so his activation from the injured list is not imminent.
May 19 2022Megill (biceps) is tentatively scheduled to play catch Thursday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill has been on the injured list since Sunday and was shut down for several days after being diagnosed with right biceps tendinitis. However, his arm has been feeling better recently, so he'll likely be able to begin a throwing program. While he'll require time to build up prior to returning to game action, it's encouraging that he'll be able to resume throwing following a brief shutdown.
May 15 2022Megill was diagnosed with right biceps tendinitis Sunday after undergoing an MRI, and he will be shut down from throwing for a few days before being re-evaluated, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill landed on the shelf with biceps inflammation earlier Sunday, but the injury has now been clarified following the MRI. The right-hander will remain without a clear timeline for his return until he's cleared to begin throwing again.
May 12 2022Megill (4-2) took the loss Wednesday as the Mets fell 8-3 to the Nationals, surrendering eight runs on eight hits and a walk over 1.1 innings while striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After lasting at least five innings in each of his first six starts this season and allowing more than three runs only once in that stretch, Megill simply didn't have it Wednesday. Homers by Juan Soto and Nelson Cruz accounted for most of the damage, doubling the number of long balls he's served up this year, and the right-hander got the hook after 54 pitches (31 strikes). Megill will take a 4.41 ERA with a still-solid 1.13 WHIP and 37:9 K:BB through 34.2 innings into his next outing.
May 4 2022Megill (4-1) allowed three earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out nine across 5.1 innings to take the loss Tuesday against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill didn't allow a hit through four innings -- though he did walk two batters -- but he began to struggle in the latter portions of his outing. He exited the game with the bases loaded and all three of those runners ultimately came around to score, which resulted in his first loss of the season. Despite the disappointing end to his start, Megill still generated 15 swinging strikes on 94 total pitches. He also still maintains a strong 2.45 ERA backed by a 35:8 K:BB across his first 33 innings on the campaign.
Apr 24 2022Megill (3-0) registered the win during Sunday's 6-2 victory over Arizona, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in 6.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill was dominant early, limiting the damage to a Christian Walker solo home run in the fourth, but ran into trouble in the seventh after allowing two hits and a run prompting his removal in what was still a tight game. The 26-year-old has been solid in each of his first four starts and manager Buck Showalter has let Megill pitch deeper into the game during each turn, topping out at 92 pitches Sunday. Megill's currently slated to square off against Philadelphia on Friday.
Apr 20 2022Megill didn't factor into the decision during a 5-4 extra-inning win over the Giants in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader. He gave up four runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings, striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander tossed 58 of 87 strikes before exiting with the score tied 4-4, but the Mets were able to pull out a win in the 10th inning. The runs Megill allowed were the first of the season on his ledger, and he'll carry a 2.20 ERA, 0,92 WHIP and 15:2 K:BB through 16.1 innings into his next start.
Apr 18 2022Megill won't start as scheduled Monday against the Giants, as the game has been postponed due to rain, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Tuesday. Megill will start the afternoon contest, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.
Apr 13 2022Megill (2-0) picked up the win in Tuesday's 2-0 victory over the Phillies, scattering three hits over 5.1 scoreless innings. He struck out five without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander didn't allow a runner past second base in another strong performance. Megill threw 49 of 76 pitches for strikes and has has yet to allow a run through his first 10.1 innings this season while posting an 11:0 K:BB. The 26-year-old has been particularly valuable for a Mets rotation already struggling with injuries, and Megill will look to keep rolling in a potential two-start week beginning Monday at home against the Giants.
Apr 7 2022Megill (1-0) earned the win over Washington on Thursday, pitching five scoreless innings and allowing three hits while striking out six. He did not walk any batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For much of the spring, Megill was looking at starting the campaign in the minors, but an injury to Jacob deGrom (shoulder) opened the door for Megill to claim a big-league rotation spot. The right-hander was thrust into the Opening Day start to give Max Scherzer more time to recover from a hamstring issue, and he proved undaunted by the spotlight, throwing 47 of 68 pitches for strikes and allowing only four Nationals baserunners. Megill held his own in his first taste of the majors last season and could solidify a permanent rotation spot if he performs well while deGrom is out. Megill's second start is likely to come next week at Philadelphia.
Apr 6 2022Megill will start the Mets' Opening Day matchup against the Nationals on Thursday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mets were trending toward awarding the Opening Day start to Megill since Max Scherzer (ankle) won't be ready to pitch Thursday, and manager Buck Showalter confirmed the news Wednesday. Across two appearances (one start) this spring, Megill allowed five hits and five walks while striking out seven in 6.2 scoreless frames.
Mar 21 2022Megill has added a cutter to his arsenal this spring, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 26-year-old is still looking for a pitch that can be effective against left-handed hitters, who posted a .995 OPS against him last season. "I definitely wanted to add another weapon," Megill said Sunday. "I wanted something hard and something that goes in to lefties, so they can respect the four-seam. If I have something hard and in, it's just an advantage for me to get on their hands and allow them to second-guess themselves." The addition of Chris Bassitt to the Mets' rotation likely means Megill will begin the season at Triple-A Syracuse despite his surprising performance last year as a rookie, so he'll have some time to hone the new pitch before a potential call-up later this summer. Megill tossed three scoreless innings in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals, giving up two hits and three walks while striking out three.
Oct 2 2021Megill was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill has had some inconsistent outings of late, as he's turned in a 5.68 ERA and 1.42 WHIP across his last four starts and 19 innings. However, he'll end his rookie campaign on a solid note after throwing five scoreless innings to earn the win Friday against Atlanta. Overall, Megill managed a 4.52 ERA and 1.28 WHIP with a 99:27 K:BB across 89.2 frames on the season. Robert Gsellman was activated from the injured list in the corresponding move.
Sep 25 2021Megill (3-6) allowed four runs on five hits and four walks while striking out two over four innings as he took the loss against the Brewers on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill struggled to keep the ball in the yard Friday, letting up three solo home runs. Kolten Wong took him deep in the first and then Willy Adames and Christian Yelich went back-to-back off him in the third. The Brewers then got to him again in the fifth after Yelich led off the inning with a triple and later scored. The 25-year-old Megill also struggled with his control; his four walks were the most he's had in a start this season. Megill has struggled mightily since late August with a 2-4 record, 7.85 ERA and 1.67 WHIP over six starts. He's allowed at least four runs each time he's lost over that span and will look to turn things around when the Marlins come to town next week.
Sep 15 2021Megill (3-5) allowed six runs on nine hits and two walks with three strikeouts through three innings, taking the loss in Wednesday's 11-4 defeat to the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The bulk of the damage to Megill's line came in the first inning when the Cardinals sent nine men to the plate and scored five runs. He ran into more trouble in the fourth, as he gave up a homer to Harrison Bader, a double to Jon Lester and a single to Tommy Edman before getting the hook. With this clunker in the books, it might be time to start asking some questions about the 26-year-old's workload. Between stints with Double-A Binghamton, Triple-A Syracuse and the Mets, Megill has worked 121 innings in 2021. That's more frames than he's thrown in a single season at any level in his career. His ERA is starting to show it too, as it sits at an ugly 7.66 over his last five starts.
Sep 10 2021Megill (3-4) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk over seven innings Friday, striking out 10 and earning a win over the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a career night for the 6-foot-7 rookie, setting new career bests with seven innings and 10 punchouts. Megill gave up a run on an RBI groundout in the first inning followed by a Joey Gallo solo shot in the second. He settled in and kept the Yankees scoreless for the next five frames and lowered his season ERA to 4.06 through 77.2 innings. He's produced a 23:5 K:BB over his last three outings. Megill is lined up to face the Cardinals at home next week.
Sep 5 2021Megill (2-4) took the loss in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Nationals, giving up four runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings as the Mets fell 4-3. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: New York's bullpen got taxed when the matinee went to extra innings, but Megill stepped up and worked the entire nightcap, although his offense couldn't matched its 11-run outburst earlier in the day to reward the right-hander with a win. Megill did tie his career high in strikeouts, and on the year the rookie sports a 4.20 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 78:19 K:BB through 70.2 innings.
Aug 29 2021Megill (2-3) allowed two runs on a hit and three walks with five strikeouts in five innings, earning the win over Washington on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The only damage on Megill's line came in the form of a two-run home run by Josh Bell in the fourth inning. The 26-year-old right-hander has been inconsistent in August, picking up just one win in six starts while allowing four or more runs three times. He has a 4.04 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 70:18 K:BB across 64.2 innings spanning 13 starts overall. Megill lines up for a road rematch in Washington next weekend.
Aug 24 2021Megill (1-3) allowed seven earned runs on 11 hits and no walks while striking out five across 3.2 innings to take the loss Tuesday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill allowed four home runs, which accounted for six of the seven earned runs that he was charged with. All four of the long balls were hit by lefties, and hitters of the opposite handedness have emerged as a problem for Megill. Of the 11 homers he's surrendered this season, nine have come from hitters who are left-handed. Though Megill had a string of several impressive starts to begin his big-league career, he's now allowed four or more earned runs in three of his last five starts. That's inflated his ERA to 4.07 across 59.2 innings.
Aug 19 2021Megill didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 6-2 extra-innings win over the Giants, giving up one run on five hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Despite delivering his third quality start of the year, Megill seemed headed for his third loss until the Mets finally scored their first run of the game in the ninth inning. The rookie right-hander will take a 3.21 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 60:15 K:BB through 56 innings into his next outing.
Aug 14 2021Megill didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 6-5 extra-inning loss to the Dodgers, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The rookie right-hander didn't pitch poorly, throwing 61 of 92 pitches for strikes, but Megill exited the game down 3-0 before the Mets got him off the hook for the loss. He has a 5.40 ERA over his last four starts and 20 innings, a far cry from the 2.10 ERA he held when that stretch began, but with Jacob deGrom (elbow) looking increasingly unlikely to pitch again this season and Noah Syndergaard (elbow) ticketed for the bullpen when he finally comes off the IL, Megill's rotation spot appears secure.
Aug 8 2021Megill (1-2) took the loss Saturday, giving up four runs on five hits and a walk over 4.2 innings as the Mets were downed 5-3 by the Phillies. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The rookie right-hander fired four scoreless frames before fading in the fifth, as a pair of homers helped drive him from the game. Megill has now served up four home runs over his last three starts and 15 innings, leading to an 0-2 record and 5.40 ERA over that stretch, but his 15:2 K:BB is still sharp. He could have trouble ending his skid in his next start, however, as it is likely to come in a home series against the Dodgers.
Aug 3 2021Megill (1-1) took the loss Monday against the Marlins after giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits over five innings. He struck out four without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He left a fastball to Lewis Brinson out over the plate with the bases loaded in the first inning, and Brinson drove it the other way out of the yard to put the Mets in a quick 4-0 hole. However, Megill rebounded after that to deliver four solid frames. This was the 26-year-old's worst start in the majors so far, but he still boasts a 2.68 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 43:11 K:BB through his first 40.1 innings. With Jacob deGrom (forearm) now not expected to return until September, Megill's spot in the rotation is fairly secure even if he continues to regress.
Jul 28 2021Megill didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 2-1 win over Atlanta, allowing one run on five hits and a walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 26-year-old rookie continues to impress, and only a lack of run support prevented Megill from collecting his second straight win. He's given up one run or fewer in five straight starts, and his 2.04 ERA and 39:11 K:BB through 35.1 innings will be tough to dislodge from the rotation even when the Mets' more experienced arms get healthy.
Jul 24 2021Megill (1-0) picked up the win Friday, allowing two hits and a walk over six scoreless innings in a 3-0 victory over the Blue Jays. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The rookie continued his remarkable run of success, delivering his second straight quality start while extending his scoreless streak to 12.2 frames. Megill has a 2.10 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 33:10 K:BB through his first 30 big-league innings, and even when the Mets' pitching staff gets healthier, it could be tough to dislodge the 25-year-old from his rotation spot.
Jul 17 2021Megill went six scoreless innings against Pittsburgh on Saturday, allowing six hits and striking out a pair in a no-decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill appeared to be on his way to his first win of the season, turning a 4-0 lead over to the bullpen, but the Pirates erupted for nine runs over the final two innings, leaving Megill without a decision in his first five major-league starts. The 25-year-old produced his longest outing to date and while his two strikeouts were a season low, it was his first appearance without issuing a free pass. Megill now owns a 2.63 ERA and 1.21 in 24 innings, along with a 28:9 K:BB.
Jul 11 2021Megill did not factor in the decision in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader against Pittsburgh. He completed 3.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits and three walks while striking out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The combination of hits and walks drove Megill's pitch count up to 85, resulting in a moderately early exit and preventing him from qualifying for the win. Still, it was another impressive performance from the right-hander, as he struck out seven batters for the second straight start and surrendered only one run. Megill has posted a 3.50 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 26:9 K:BB across his first 18 major-league frames, and he continues to make a strong case to stick in the rotation throughout the second half of the campaign.
Jul 6 2021Megill didn't factor into the decision in Monday's 4-2 win over the Brewers after allowing one run on two hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The only blemish on the rookie right-hander's line was a solo blast by Omar Narvaez in the fourth inning. Megill, an eighth-round pick in 2018, has looked very good through his first three big-league starts, delivering a 3.77 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 19:6 K:BB through 14.1 innings. The 25-year-old has mixed a devastating slider (41.7 percent whiff rate so far) and a work-in-progress changeup in with a 95 mph fastball. While he might find himself in the bullpen in the second half if Carlos Carrasco (hamstring) ever gets healthy, Megill is proving he belongs in the majors.
Jun 29 2021Megill allowed three earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out eight across five innings Tuesday against Atlanta. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The outing marked Megill's second big-league start, and he improved both the length of his outing and ability to generate whiffs. He managed to complete five innings, with the only major damage against him being a three-run home run by Ozzie Albies. Megill also racked up an impressive 14 swinging strikes on 85 total pitches, doubling his strikeout total from his major-league debut. Through only 9.1 innings, he's now allowed five earned runs while posting a 12:4 K:BB.
Jun 27 2021Mets manager Luis Rojas said Megill will start Tuesday's game in Atlanta, SportsNet New York reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Megill will face Atlanta for what will be his second straight turn through the rotation after he started in his big-league debut last Wednesday. He was serviceable if unspectacular in that outing, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four over 4.1 innings. Megill was initially expected to be one and done in the rotation, but he'll benefit from a second turn after Friday's doubleheader with the Phillies created a stretch of six games in five days. Assuming the Mets have no new injuries to the rotation or changes to the schedule during the upcoming week, Megill could be optioned to Triple-A following Tuesday's outing.
Jun 24 2021Megill didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 7-3 win over Atlanta, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old appeared to be in good shape to pick up the win in his big-league debut after the Mets jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but Megill ran into trouble in the fifth inning and got the hook after throwing 92 pitches (53 strikes). Whether he gets another turn in the rotation will depend on how quickly Marcus Stroman (hip) can return to the mound.
Jun 23 2021Megill had his contract selected by the Mets and is starting Wednesday's game versus Atlanta, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was previously announced as the starter for Wednesday's series finale, and now he's officially joined the major-league roster ahead of his debut. Megill has a 3.35 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 59:12 K:BB over 40.1 innings between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Syracuse this season.
Jun 22 2021Megill will have his contract selected by the Mets and start Wednesday's game against Atlanta, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old has a 3.77 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 17:5 K:BB over 14.1 innings (three starts) at Triple-A Syracuse, and he'll be promoted to make his big-league debut Wednesday. It'll likely be a spot start for Megill, though the status of Marcus Stroman (hip), who exited Tuesday's game with an injury, could open a spot in the rotation.
