Jun 29 2025Strider (3-6) yielded two runs on five hits and three walks over seven innings Sunday, striking out four and taking a loss against Philadelphia. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider worked through four shutout frames before the Phillies broke through and scored a pair in the fifth inning. He was handed the tough-luck loss after Atlanta's offense managed only one run. Strider threw 56 of 95 pitches for strikes and forced 10 whiffs, including seven with his slider. Strider had racked up 29 punchouts during a three-start winning streak before Sunday's outing. He now owns a 3.86 ERA with a 57:20 K:BB across 49 innings. Strider is in line for a home matchup against the Orioles next weekend.
Jun 24 2025Strider (3-5) earned the win Tuesday against the Mets, giving up three runs on two hits and four walks in five innings. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider struggled with his control on a sweltering night in New York, walking a season-high four, but he was still able to strike out at least eight in his third straight start. The hard-throwing right-hander produced a strong 15 whiffs, and he kept a dangerous Mets lineup in check with just two singles allowed. Strider is still searching for a groove in 2025 while coming off Tommy John surgery, and he'll aim to improve on his 4.07 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 53:17 K:BB over his first 42 frames at home versus the Phillies his next time out.
Jun 19 2025Strider (2-5) registered the win Thursday against the Mets, giving up one run on five hits and one walk in six innings. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider followed up on his 13-strikeout performance his last time out with another heavy dose of swing-and-miss stuff Thursday. The hard-throwing right-hander whiffed 18, and he's now logged his two highest strikeout totals for the season in his past two starts. Strider owns a 3.89 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 45:13 K:BB through his first 37 innings in 2025, and he's now put together a three-game streak of quality starts. He's tentatively set to take the ball against these same Mets next week, this time on the road.
Jun 15 2025Strider (1-5) earned the win Saturday, allowing three hits and one walk over six scoreless innings against the Rockies. He struck out 13. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider returned to form Saturday, racking up a season-high 13 strikeouts in a dominant outing. The right-hander's 2025 campaign has been challenging to say the least, as a hamstring injury derailed his return from elbow surgery. On the season, the 26-year-old owns a 4.35 ERA and 1.16 WHIP over 31 innings in six starts.
Jun 8 2025Strider (0-5) took the loss Sunday against San Francisco, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits and three walks across six innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider has taken a loss in all five of his appearances this season, but Sunday's outing marked his first time completing six innings this year. The 26-year-old hasn't been consistently healthy since 2023, but he's now made four straight turns through Atlanta's rotation. He's still finding his footing though, owning a 5.85 ERA and a 19:10 K:BB over 20 innings. Fresh off a quality start, Strider is on track for a matchup with the lowly Rockies next weekend.
Jun 4 2025Strider (0-4) took the loss Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, coughing up five runs on six hits -- including three home runs -- and two walks over five innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander struggled through 85 pitches (52 strikes), serving up homers to Ketel Marte in the first and third innings and Corbin Carroll in the fifth. Strider has been a shell of himself since returning from a hamstring injury, posting a 6.43 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 14:7 K:BB over three starts and 14 innings, and his velocity remains down -- he's averaging 95.2 mph on his four-seamer this season, over two ticks below the 97.3 mph he was averaging in 2023. Strider will try to find his form in his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road this weekend in San Francisco.
May 28 2025Strider (0-3) took the loss Tuesday, allowing one run on one hit and four walks over 4.2 innings as Atlanta was downed 2-0 by the Phillies. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was inefficient, tossing 50 of 90 pitches for strikes, and one of the pitches that got away from him resulted in Bryce Harper taking a 95.3 mph fastball off the elbow. Strider has failed to last five innings in either of his first two starts since recovering from a hamstring strain, posting a 10:5 K:BB in nine innings as he searches for his prior command and velocity. He lines up to make his next trip to the mound at home this weekend against the Red Sox.
May 20 2025Strider (0-2) took the loss in Tuesday's game against the Nationals, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk while striking out three across 4.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider was activated from the 15-day injured list ahead of Tuesday's start after missing the last month due to a strained hamstring. He got off to a poor start by yielding three first-inning runs before giving up a fourth run in the second on a Dylan Crews solo homer. Strider has been limited to just two starts this season due to injury and has a 5.79 ERA and 1.39 WHIP across 9.1 innings. He'll look for his first win of the season in his next start, which is lined up for this weekend at home against San Diego.
May 19 2025Atlanta activated Strider (hamstring) from the 15-day injured list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Atlanta is idle Monday, but Strider is expected to make his return to the rotation Tuesday with a start against the Nationals on the road. The right-hander missed nearly a month of action with a strained hamstring and was cleared to return after completing a 65-pitch simulated game last week. Strider probably won't be ready for a full workload Tuesday, and his velocity was down a tick during the sim game. However, he gets a favorable matchup Tuesday and is also lined up for a second start later this week at home versus the Padres, so fantasy managers will want to include him in active lineups.
May 18 2025Strider (hamstring) appears set to return to Atlanta's rotation Tuesday versus Washington, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Brian Snitker said late last week that Strider would be activated from the injured list to start one of the team's three games in Washington, and given that Atlanta has listed AJ Smith-Shawver and Chris Sale as its probable pitchers for Wednesday and Thursday, the writing is on the wall for Strider to return for the first game of the series. The ace right-hander will forego a minor-league rehab assignment, though he did toss 65 pitches in a sim game last Wednesday. He could be on some sort of a pitch count in his return, but he'll draw a favorable assignment against a Nationals lineup that ranks 20th in MLB in team OPS (.688).
May 15 2025Manager Brian Snitker said Thursday that Strider (hamstring) will be activated off the injured list to start one of Atlanta's games in Washington next week, 680 The Fan Atlanta reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's still unclear exactly which game Strider will pitch in Atlanta's upcoming three-game series against the Nationals, but Snitker's comments confirm that the 26-year-old righty will return to the rotation without making a rehab start in the minors. Strider only built up to 65 pitches and experienced decreased velocity during his sim game Wednesday, so there's a chance he'll be working under some workload restrictions when he makes his return from a strained right hamstring.
May 12 2025Strider (hamstring) is scheduled to throw 70-to-75 pitches in a simulated game Wednesday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The upcoming sim game takes Strider out of the running from returning from the 15-day injured list this week, but if all goes well Wednesday, he could bypass a minor-league rehab start and rejoin the Atlanta rotation for the start of their series in Washington that begins May 20. After making a speedy recovery from the internal brace procedure he underwent on his right elbow last spring, Strider tossed five innings in his 2025 debut for Atlanta on April 16, then went back on the IL five days later after straining his right hamstring while playing catch.
May 11 2025Strider (hamstring) said that he feels ready to return from the 15-day injured list, but Atlanta has yet to decide whether he'll be activated during the upcoming week or go on a minor-league rehab assignment, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider has been on the shelf since April 21 due to a Grade 1 right hamstring strain, which he sustained while playing catch. He received a platelet-poor plasma injection two days later that he credits with hastening his recovery. The right-hander has responded well to bullpen sessions Wednesday and Saturday, but Atlanta may want to have him face hitters in a simulated game or in a minor-league rehab start before bringing him back from the IL. If Strider is cleared to return during the upcoming week, his workload could be managed carefully in what would be his first outing since April 16. Per Lindsay Crosby of AthlonSports.com, Atlanta has already confirmed its starting pitchers through Thursday, so there wouldn't be an opening for Strider in the rotation until at least Friday.
May 9 2025Strider (hamstring) will throw another bullpen session Saturday before Atlanta decides whether he will need a rehab start before rejoining the big-league rotation, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider was given a PRP injection after suffering a right hamstring strain April 21 and threw his first bullpen since the injury Wednesday, which went well. The right-hander indicated that he feels ready to rejoin Atlanta's rotation, but the ultimate decision lies with the club. Strider could return next week if Atlanta decides a rehab start isn't necessary, but if that happens he would likely have a limited workload.
May 7 2025Strider (hamstring) threw a bullpen session Wednesday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wednesday's session was the first time Strider had done any sort of mound work since he landed on the injured list in late April with a right hamstring strain. The 26-year-old righty said he felt good afterward, but the team is going to wait to see how he feels Thursday before determining what the next steps in his rehab will be.
May 5 2025Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said that Strider (hamstring) advanced to long-toss throwing Sunday, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The activity marks a small step forward for Strider, who had been limited to playing catch from shorter distances since straining his right hamstring Monday. Snitker noted, however, that Strider hasn't yet been cleared for mound work, so the right-hander is most likely at least a couple weeks away from coming off the 15-day injured list. AJ Smith-Shawver should continue to maintain a spot in Atlanta's rotation until Strider is ready for activation.
May 2 2025Strider (hamstring) has yet to be cleared to throw off a mound, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider has been playing catch, but it's been two weeks since he's thrown off the bump and it's uncertain when he'll be cleared for that. Given that layoff, it figures to be at least another couple weeks before he's ready to rejoin the Atlanta rotation even in a best-case scenario. Strider has been sidelined since mid-April with a Grade 1 right hamstring strain.
Apr 21 2025Atlanta placed Strider on the 15-day injured list Monday with a strained right hamstring. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider injured the hamstring while playing catch Monday, per Mark Bowman of MLB.com. He will be eligible to return May 3, but it's not clear whether the righty will be ready to go by that date. Strider had been slated to start Tuesday against the Cardinals and Atlanta is undecided on who will take the ball in his place.
Apr 16 2025Strider (0-1) took the loss Wednesday, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk over five-plus innings as Atlanta was downed 3-1 by the Blue Jays. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his first big-league start since April 5 of last season after completing his recovery from an internal brace procedure on his elbow, Strider looked strong early and topped out at 97.9 mph with his fastball on a strikeout of Vladimir Guerrero in the first inning. The Toronto slugger got his revenge though, taking Strider deep on a slider in the top of the sixth to help chase the right-hander from the game. Strider handled a full workload, tossing 58 of 97 pitches for strikes, and his final strikeout of the day was the 500th of his career. He lines up to make his next start at home early next week against the Cardinals.
Apr 13 2025Atlanta is planning to activate Strider (elbow) from the 15-day injured list to make his season debut Wednesday in Toronto, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shortly after Strider completed his third and final rehab start with Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday, Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said that the right-hander was on track to return from the IL during the upcoming week. While Atlanta has yet to officially confirm that Strider will debut Wednesday, the 26-year-old felt good during his throwing session Sunday and will take the hill for the series finale in Toronto, barring any unforeseen setbacks with his arm. Strider is just over a year removed from undergoing internal brace surgery on his right elbow, but he exhibited no signs of rust during his two Grapefruit League starts and three rehab outings. He got stretched out to 5.1 innings and 90 pitches in his final start with Gwinnett, striking out 13 of the 21 batters he faced while inducing 21 swings and misses. Atlanta likely won't push Strider past the 100-pitch mark Wednesday, but given how strong he's looked during his time on the farm, fantasy managers who had been stashing him will likely want to activate him right away this week.
Apr 10 2025Atlanta manager Brian Snitker indicated Thursday that the team plans for Strider (elbow) to make his season debut next week, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider yielded one run while striking out 13 over 5.1 innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday, getting his pitch count up to 90. While Snitker would not officially commit to Strider coming off the 15-day injured list next week, he could just be waiting to make sure the righty bounces back well from the outing Friday. Strider could start as soon as Tuesday in Toronto, but he's been pitching on five days' rest during his rehab assignment, so Wednesday might be the likelier target date.
Apr 8 2025Strider (elbow) has a target of about 90 pitches for his rehab start Thursday, which is likely to be his final one before being activated from the injured list, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: That would line up the right-hander to make his 2025 debut either next Tuesday or a week from Wednesday during a series in Toronto, although Atlanta has yet to announce its plans for Strider past Thursday's rehab start with Triple-A Gwinnett. Through two rehab appearances with Gwinnett so far, Strider has a 1.08 ERA and 14:3 K:BB over 8.1 innings.
Apr 5 2025Strider (elbow) will make another rehab start for Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider has dominated in his two minor-league rehab outings so far, fanning 14 batters while allowing just one earned run on two hits and three walks over 8.1 innings. The right-hander worked up to 74 pitches in his most recent appearance Friday as he closes in on a return to the majors following last April's right elbow surgery. If things continue to progress smoothly for Strider, he could join Atlanta's rotation in mid-April.
Apr 4 2025Strider (elbow) is making a rehab start Friday for Triple-A Gwinnett, Grant McAuley of 92.9 The Game Atlanta reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander threw 60 pitches over three innings during his first rehab start with Gwinnett last weekend, and he'll continue building up his workload Friday. Strider is almost exactly one year removed from undergoing internal brace surgery on his right elbow, and he'll likely require another rehab start or two after Friday before rejoining the Atlanta rotation.
Mar 31 2025Strider (elbow) struck out six batters and allowed one earned run on two hits and one walk over three innings in his first rehab start Saturday with Triple-A Gwinnett. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since he resumed pitching in games March 17, Strider has dazzled in all three of his outings while he bounces back from an internal brace procedure on his right elbow, which he underwent April 5, 2024. Over his two spring training appearances, Strider posted a 10:1 K:BB while allowing just two hits and one walk across four innings, and he continued to mow down hitters with Gwinnett on Saturday while upping his pitch count to 60. Atlanta will presumably want to see Strider get his count into the 75-to-85 range before activating him from the 15-day injured list, so he may be just one or two rehab starts away from making his 2025 big-league debut.
Mar 28 2025Strider (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider, who is coming back from an internal brace procedure, made two Grapefruit League starts, throwing a total of four innings and getting his pitch count up to 45 in the second outing. It's uncertain how many rehab starts he will be asked to make before joining the Atlanta rotation, but it's likely to be at least a couple. The ace right-hander appears to be on track for a mid-April return.
Mar 25 2025Atlanta placed Strider (elbow) on the 15-day injured list Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's simply a procedural move for the right-hander as he finishes up his rehab from the internal brace procedure he underwent in April 2024. Strider was able to get in two Grapefruit League starts before the end of spring training and had a 10:1 K:BB with two earned runs allowed over four innings, potentially setting him up to make his 2025 debut as early as mid-April.
Mar 21 2025Strider (elbow) will start Sunday's spring game against the Orioles and is scheduled to throw about 45-50 pitches, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It'll be the second Grapefruit League appearance for Strider, who is nearing the end of his rehab from an internal brace procedure. The right-hander threw 27 pitches across 2.2 innings during his spring debut Monday, and he'll require at least a couple more outings after Sunday to ramp up his workload. Strider could be ready to join Atlanta's rotation in mid-April.
Mar 17 2025Strider (elbow) struck out six batters over 2.2 perfect innings during his Grapefruit League debut Monday versus the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cleared to pitch for the first time since April 5, 2024 after completing his recovery from an internal brace procedure on his right elbow, Strider looked as dominant as ever Monday. He found the strike zone on 23 of his 27 pitches and struck out six of the eight batters he faced, with the other two outs coming on a weak popout into foul territory and a first-pitch groundout. His velocity also appeared right in line with pre-surgery levels, with Strider topping out at 98 miles per hour on a first-inning strikeout of outfield prospect Roman Anthony. Since Strider will still need to get stretched out over the course of multiple starts, he remains on track to open the season on the 15-day injured list, but his dominant performance Monday makes a mid-to-late April debut increasingly realistic and is likely to send his ADP soaring.
Mar 16 2025Strider (elbow) will make his first start of spring training Monday against the Red Sox, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's a big step for Strider, who will be seeing his first game action since he underwent Tommy John surgery at the start of last season. The right-hander will be beginning the campaign on the injured list, but he could make his 2025 debut in late April if he's able to continue ramping up his throwing program with no issues.
Mar 13 2025Strider (elbow) is tracking toward joining the Atlanta rotation in late April, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Atlanta has been resistant to offering any specific timetable for Strider's return from an internal brace procedure on his elbow, but Feinsand hears from sources that "it's reasonable to expect" the right-hander to make his season debut toward the back end of April. Strider is close to being able to pitch in a game, either in a Grapefruit League setting or a more controlled minor-league contest.
Mar 9 2025Strider (elbow) will throw at least one more live batting practice session before getting into a spring game, either in Grapefruit League action or in a minor-league contest, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The ace right-hander looked very good in his first live BP session Friday, tossing two simulated innings as he continues his recovery from an internal brace procedure on his elbow. "I think it's gone super well," Strider said about his rehab after the BP session. "In hindsight, there's always going to be things we could have done differently, places where we should have slowed down and places where we should have sped up. But I think it's been a really seamless process so far." If Strider is able to begin building up by the final week of camp, it's possible he could come off the IL and rejoin the Atlanta rotation by the end of April, although the team's schedule presents an added wrinkle on that front. Atlanta will be playing in Coors Field on April 28-30, hardly an ideal environment for a pitcher to make his return from a serious arm injury.
Mar 8 2025Strider (elbow) threw 30 pitches in a live batting practice session Friday and used all his pitches, Ken Sugiura of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Facing the rehabbing Ronald Acuna (knee) as well as Ozzie Albies, Strider recorded four strikeouts over two simulated innings and drew a "that was nasty" comment from Albies after the second baseman flailed away at a breaking ball. Strider will begin the season on the IL as he completes his recovery from an internal brace procedure on his elbow performed early last year, and Atlanta has avoided providing any sort of target date for his 2025 debut, but the right-hander appears to be making excellent progress.
Feb 22 2025Strider (elbow) threw to batters Friday, using both his fastball and curveball as he continues his recovery from last April's elbow surgery, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was the first time this spring Strider had thrown more than just a bullpen session, although the hitters stepping into the box against him were instructed not to swing. The next step for the right-hander will be live batting practice, but Atlanta hasn't indicated yet when that might happen. "We've done such a good job of building a base, making sure mechanics are in a good spot. My stuff and command have come along better than I could have expected," Strider said after Friday's session. After he added a curve to his repertoire in 2023, there had been some speculation he might abandon the pitch in case it had contributed to his latest elbow woes, but Strider has no intention of doing that. "I know some people have speculated, but those people, kindly, don't have all the information," Strider said. "So I appreciate their interest, but..." He remains on track to miss the first month or so of the regular season, but the organization has held off providing any sort of firm timeline for his 2025 debut.
Feb 15 2025Strider (elbow) could see action in at least one spring training game, Justin Toscano of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander is recovering from an internal brace procedure performed on his elbow last April, and after he threw another bullpen session Friday, general manager Alex Anthopoulos seemed optimistic that Strider could make his regular-season debut a little earlier than anticipated. "He's throwing bullpens, he looks good. Live [batting practice] will definitely happen in spring training, assuming no setbacks or things like that," Anthopoulos said Friday. The GM indicated that while Atlanta has an internal timeline for Strider, he wouldn't make it public just yet other than to say the 26-year-old ace would begin the campaign on the IL. "We have a calendar for him, but I think if we start saying, 'Hey, on this date he's doing this' and for whatever reason we decide to move it back a day or two, then it's a story and it's viewed as a setback or [that] we weren't forthcoming," Anthopoulos said. "So, what I can tell you is he will not be on the Opening Day roster, that has been decided."
Feb 10 2025Strider (elbow) could make at least one Grapefruit League appearance this spring and be ready for his season debut by late April, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Recovering from last April's internal brace procedure on his right elbow, Strider will begin the season on the 15-day injured list. However, he has been throwing bullpen sessions and might be ready to rejoin Atlanta's rotation around a month into the season. Any timetable for the righty is approximate for now, but more clarity should be available as spring training rolls along.
Jan 23 2025Strider (elbow) has completed four bullpen sessions and is on track to have a mostly normal spring training, Lindsay Crosby of AthlonSports.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider's progress is notable and a strong sign of his potential to contribute significant innings in 2025. However, general manager Alex Anthopoulos reiterated that the current plan is that Strider will not open the season on the active roster. More details about his timeline should emerge as spring training begins and progresses.
Nov 5 2024Atlanta president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos said Tuesday it's unlikely Strider (elbow) will be ready for Opening Day, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The revelation isn't altogether surprising, as Anthopoulos indicated last month that while Opening Day was possible for Strider, the pitcher's season debut might not come until early June. Any timeline at this point is approximate, with more clarity likely to come by spring training. Strider is working his way back from an internal brace procedure he underwent in mid-April.
Oct 4 2024Atlanta president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos said Friday that the club will proceed deliberately with Strider's (elbow) rehab and are not setting a timetable for the pitcher yet, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider underwent an internal brace procedure in mid-April to address UCL damage in his pitching elbow. While the internal brace operation is less invasive than Tommy John surgery (which Strider had previously), the team will still be extra cautious about rushing the right-hander back too quickly. Anthopoulos indicated Friday that it's possible Strider is back by Opening Day, but it could also be as late as early June.
Jun 15 2024Strider (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider is already set to miss the remainder of the 2024 campaign after undergoing elbow surgery in April, so the move to the 60-day IL doesn't affect his outlook. The right-hander will still have his sights set on a return at some point early in the 2025 season; in the meantime, Saturday's transaction opened a spot on the 40-man roster for Ramon Laureano, who had his contract selected from Triple-A Gwinnett.
Apr 20 2024Strider suggested Friday that he could be back on a mound early next season after doctors found that his ligament was in "surprisingly good" shape during surgery, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander indicated that the internal bracing procedure he underwent last week ended up being necessary because of a loose bone fragment in his elbow that had developed over the last couple years. "That's what destabilized the ligament," Strider said. Atlanta will likely be cautious with its ace's recovery, but the fact that he avoided Tommy John surgery and the relatively positive news about the state of his ligament are strong signs that he could still have significant fantasy value in 2025.
Apr 13 2024Strider underwent surgery to repair the UCL in his right elbow and will miss the rest of the season. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: An MRI revealed damage to Strider's UCL last week, forcing him to undergo an internal brace procedure that will keep him out for 12-to-14 months -- though it was not a full Tommy John surgery. Nonetheless, he's been ruled out for the rest of the 2024 campaign and will likely aim to return in the early months of 2025. The newly recalled Darius Vines could take Strider's place in Atlanta's rotation, although the team has plenty of other options if he falters.
Apr 7 2024Atlanta placed Strider on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a UCL sprain in his right elbow. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old righty underwent an MRI on Saturday that revealed damage to the UCL in his right elbow, so it was only a matter of time before he landed on the injured list. It's unclear at this point if Strider will require Tommy John surgery -- which would be the second such procedure of his career -- but he's likely facing a lengthy absence regardless.
Apr 6 2024Strider underwent an MRI on Saturday that revealed damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He will be further evaluated by Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, Texas, at a date yet to be determined. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider reported discomfort in his right elbow after Friday's game and the worst-case scenario seems to be unfolding. If Tommy John surgery is necessary, it would be the second for Strider in his young career. He should be considered out indefinitely, with a move to the injured list likely before the weekend is out. Bryce Elder is a candidate to replace Strider in Atlanta's starting rotation.
Apr 5 2024Strider reported discomfort in his right elbow after his start Friday against Arizona, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider surrendered five earned runs across four innings en route to an Atlanta victory, and his elbow may have played a part in his poor performance. He's slated to receive an MRI on Saturday, which will provide a better idea of how much time -- if any -- the right-hander will miss.
Apr 3 2024Strider won't start Wednesday after Atlanta's game versus the White Sox was postponed due to inclement weather in Chicago, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The game will be made up on June 27, which had been a mutual off day for the two clubs. Atlanta is off Thursday, which means Strider's next start will come Friday at home against the Diamondbacks.
Mar 29 2024Strider came away with a no-decision in Friday's 9-3 win over the Phillies, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander fired 59 of 90 pitches for strikes and generated 18 swinging strikes in a typically dominant performance, but Atlanta didn't take the lead until the eighth inning. Strider led all pitchers with 35 strikeouts this spring in 22.2 innings, and he didn't slow down in his first regular-season start. After racking up a league-high 281 Ks last year in 186.2 innings, Strider will take aim at 300 in 2024.
Mar 27 2024Strider and Atlanta won't face the Phillies on Thursday after the game was postponed due to forecasted rain in Philadelphia. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The season opener for both clubs has been rescheduled for Friday at 3:05 p.m. ET. Strider, who had been slated to take the hill Thursday, will presumably be bumped back one day in the schedule to go head-to-head against the Phillies' Opening Day starter, Zack Wheeler.
Mar 19 2024Strider has been named Atlanta's Opening Day starter, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: You could have made a case for Max Fried given his tenure with the club, but Strider is the sensible choice after he won 20 games while piling up a league-leading 281 strikeouts last season. It will be a marquee matchup on March 28 in Philadelphia, with Strider going up against Zack Wheeler.
Mar 18 2024Strider struck out seven over 4.2 scoreless innings while allowing two hits and three walks in Sunday's split-squad game against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old right-hander leads all pitchers with 29 strikeouts this spring, to go along with a pristine 0.00 ERA over 18.2 innings, and the players he fanned Sunday included Gunnar Henderson (twice) and Cedric Mullins. Strider is on schedule to take the mound for Atlanta on Opening Day against the Phillies, which would line him up for one more spring appearance Friday, but that could come on a back field rather than in Grapefruit League action.
Mar 12 2024Strider allowed two hits and a walk over five scoreless innings while striking out nine during Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Atlanta ace faced a mix of likely starters and bench players for Minnesota, as well as top prospect Brooks Lee, and mowed them all down. Strider has a 0.00 ERA and eye-popping 22:4 K:BB through 14 spring innings as the 25-year-old right-hander gears up for an almost certain Opening Day assignment.
Mar 7 2024Strider allowed four hits and a walk while striking out four over four scoreless innings during Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In his longest outing of the spring so far, Strider had little trouble dispatching a Detroit lineup led by Kerry Carpenter and top prospect Colt Keith. The 25-year-old right-hander has been dominant in Florida, posting a 0.00 ERA and 13:3 K:BB through nine innings as he looks to take another step forward after leading MLB with 281 strikeouts in 2023.
Feb 25 2024Strider struck out four batters over two scoreless innings in his first Grapefruit League action of the spring Saturday against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander allowed one hit and and one walk, and per David O'Brien of The Athletic, he was already hitting 98-99 mph with his fastball even though it isn't even March yet. Strider also incorporated the curveball he's been working on, throwing three of them and liking the results. "I think every time [the curve] was effective," Strider said after the start. "And it's a pitch that, similarly to the changeup, is an effective pitch any time I throw it, regardless of what the outcome is. Because my strengths are my fastball and my slider. So everything I'm doing is trying to help those pitches. And so that's how today was very educational, starting to see the sequencing and the feedback from hitters in a competitive environment." Strider threw his fastball and slider almost 93 percent of the time in 2023, and while that likely isn't going to change significantly this season, having another pitch he trusts in his repertoire could allow the 25-year-old ace to become the first pitcher to record 300 strikeouts in a season since Gerrit Cole and Justin Verlander both reached that mark in 2019.
Feb 20 2024Strider unveiled a curveball during a live batting practice session against Matt Olson on Monday, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After the BP session, Strider was reluctant to label his new toy as a true curveball, instead suggesting it was just a modified version of his slider. "The terminology, you know, on all this stuff - sweeper, slider, cutter, curve, slurve, who knows what anything does? I think it's just manipulating the ball a little more, seeing what kind of different shapes I can get." The right-hander has become one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball while relying on two pitches, a fastball that in 2023 had an average velocity of 97.2 mph (93rd percentile) and a slider that generated a 55.3 percent whiff rate. Strider did sprinkle in a changeup once in a while last year (7.3 percent), but if he can add another breaking pitch as well, at-bats against him could become even more frustrating.
Oct 12 2023Strider took the loss in Thursday's 3-1 defeat to the Phillies in Game 4 of the NLDS, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks across 5.2 innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider was not as sharp as his start in Game 1 of the series and once again found himself on the wrong side of the decision. The bulk of the damage came on two home runs from Nick Castellanos in the fourth and sixth innings, both of which came on pitches Strider left inside to the pull-happy outfielder. Although Strider struggled with allowing constant traffic on the basepaths, he also racked up 19 whiffs, underscoring the rollercoaster command that plagued him in this start. His postseason concluded with a 2.84 ERA and 1.34 WHIP across 12.2 innings with 15 strikeouts.
Oct 11 2023Strider will start Thursday in Game 4 of the NLDS in Philadelphia, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was merely a formality, as Strider started Game 1 and will be on regular rest Thursday. He took the loss in the series opener in spite of a terrific effort which saw him allow two runs (one earned) while striking out eight over seven innings. The Phillies have not yet confirmed their Game 4 starter, but it's expected to be Ranger Suarez.
Oct 6 2023Strider will start Saturday against the Phillies in Game 1 of the NLDS. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider struggled toward the end of the regular season, posting a 5.60 ERA and 1.32 WHIP across 27.1 innings in September. However, he was dominant in the two starts he made against the Phillies that month, giving up four runs over 14 innings while striking out 20 batters and walking just two.
Oct 1 2023Strider (20-5) earned the win Saturday, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks over five innings against the Nationals. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider closed out the 2023 regular season on a high note Saturday, posting a quality start and fanning seven batters en route to his 20th win of the campaign. While the 24-year-old allowed three or more runs in five of his last six starts, Strider managed to finish 2023 with a 3.86 ERA and a 281:58 K:BB across 186.2 innings while leading the league in wins and strikeouts.
Sep 24 2023Strider (19-5) allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out four over 5.2 innings to earn the win in Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader versus the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider picked up his fourth win when allowing four or more runs this year. Despite not having his best, he's now won three stars in a row, allowing eight runs over 19.2 innings with a 24:3 K:BB in that span. The Atlanta ace has a 3.81 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 274:55 K:BB through 181.2 innings over 31 starts this season. He should get a chance to be the only 20-win starter this year with one more projected start in the regular season, tentatively lined up to be at home against the Nationals.
Sep 19 2023Strider (18-5) earned the win Tuesday, allowing three runs on four hits over seven innings against the Phillies. He struck out 11. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider was dominant Tuesday, keeping the Phillies off the board for five innings before Bryce Harper launched a three-run homer. Still, the 24-year-old Strider would hang on for his 18th win, the most in the majors, while racking up double-digit strikeouts for the 11th time this season. Strider increased his league-leading strikeout total to 270 to go along with a 3.73 ERA and 1.06 WHIP. He's currently slated for a road matchup with the Nationals in his next outing.
Sep 10 2023Strider is dealing with an illness but is scheduled to start Wednesday against the Phillies, David O'Brien of The Athleticreports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander originally lined up to start in Monday's doubleheader, but the ailment will push him back a couple days in Atlanta's rotation. It doesn't appear to be serious concern since Strider is still on the pitching schedule, though it's worth keeping an eye on his status heading into Wednesday's contest.
Sep 7 2023Strider (16-5) took the loss against St. Louis on Wednesday, allowing six runs on six hits and three walks while striking out five batters over 2.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider struggled from the start of the contest, allowing four runs on three hits and a walk in the first frame. He got through the second unscathed despite allowing another hit, then issued two free passes around two hits in the third before departing with two outs in the inning. It was a frustrating start against a middle-of-the-pack team in terms of scoring, both for the hurler and for fantasy managers who roster him in head-to-head leagues currently in the playoffs. Strider has been one of the best pitchers in the game this season, but this was a good reminder that he isn't immune to blow-ups, as he's now allowed at least five runs in an outing five different times through 28 starts.
Aug 31 2023Strider improved to 16-4 with a win over the Dodgers on Thursday, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out nine batters over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider gave up a run in the first frame before Atlanta put up a six-run second. The right-hander cruised from there until Mookie Betts tagged him for a three-run shot in the fifth inning. That cost Strider a chance at a quality start, but he still finished with his fourth straight victory. This was the first time during that streak that Strider has given up more than one run, and he put up solid numbers in August, going 5-1 with a 2.97 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 46:13 K:BB over 36.1 frames across six starts.
Aug 25 2023Strider (15-4) allowed a run on three hits and a walk while striking out nine over seven innings to earn the win Friday over the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider's scoreless streak came to an end when he gave up a run in the seventh inning. He hadn't allowed a run over 14 innings across his previous two starts. The 24-year-old right-hander is now at a 3.46 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 236:47 K:BB through 153.1 innings across 26 starts this season. Strider will look to keep his excellent August going next week in Colorado.
Aug 19 2023Strider (14-4) picked up the win in Friday's 4-0 victory over the Giants, scattering one hit and one walk over seven scoreless innings. He struck out 10. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander retired the first nine batters he faced before putting LaMonte Wade on with a walk to lead off the fourth inning, and that was the only frame in which Strider even let a runner get into scoring position. He generated 32 called or swinging strikes among his 97 pitches as he fanned double-digit batters for the first time in August and the 10th time this season. Strider will take a 3.57 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 227:46 K:BB through 146.1 innings into his next outing, likely to come at home next week against the Mets.
Aug 12 2023Strider (13-4) picked up the win in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader sweep of the Mets, allowing three hits and four walks over seven scoreless innings in a 6-0 victory. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: New York scored only three runs total on the day and none off either of Atlanta's starting pitchers, failing to cash in the opportunities Strider gave them in the nightcap. The right-hander has issued multiple free passes in three straight starts, but he's also delivered quality starts in three of his last four outings. Strider's 4.67 ERA in 34.2 innings since the All-Star break isn't reflected in his 51:13 K:BB or 1.21 WHIP, and he'll look to bring those ratios down further in his next start, likely to come at home next weekend against the Giants.
Aug 7 2023Strider (12-4) allowed six runs on five hits and three walks over 2.2 innings Monday, striking out three and taking a loss against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After two scoreless frames, the Pirates plated six runs in a disastrous third inning. It was Strider's shortest outing of the year and the first time he struck out fewer than six batters. The 24-year-old has given up at least four runs in three of his last five outings, registering a 5.86 ERA during that stretch. Strider owns a terrific 211:41 K:BB through 132.1 innings but his season ERA shot up to 3.94. His next start is lined up to be on the road against the Mets.
Aug 2 2023Strider (12-3) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over 6.2 innings in a 5-1 victory over the Angels. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander came just short of his fifth straight start with double-digit strikeouts, but by fanning Shohei Ohtani in the first inning, Strider became the fastest pitcher in MLB history to 200 Ks in a season by doing it in just 123.1 innings. He broke the record held by... himself, as he needed 130 innings to whiff his first 200 batters as a rookie in 2022. Since battling through a couple rough outings in early June, Strider has posted a 2.82 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and stunning 81:8 K:BB through 51 innings over his last eight starts. He's next set to take the mound early next week in Pittsburgh.
Jul 27 2023Strider allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out 10 batters over 6.1 innings in a no-decision against Boston on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider cruised through five scoreless frames before Rafael Devers tagged him for a solo homer in the sixth. Strider got through the rest of that inning and continued into the seventh, when he surrendered another solo shot to Triston Casas before getting the hook after allowing a single to the following batter. The Red Sox turned out two more runs in the frame following the hurler's departure, saddling him with a no-decision. Despite the late struggles, Strider posted another big outing from a fantasy perspective, tallying double-digit punchouts for his fourth straight start. The right-hander has just one win and a so-so 4.01 ERA during that span, but he's posted a remarkable 44:3 K:BB across 24.2 frames during the stretch to boost his MLB-best strikeout total to 199 -- 37 more than his closest competition (Kevin Gausman).
Jul 21 2023Strider did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing four runs on four hits and one walk over six innings against the Diamondbacks. He struck out 13. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider was his usual dominant self through the first six innings, striking out 12 of the first 17 batters he faced, before allowing four runs in the top of the seventh. It was the right-hander's second start in a row in which he allowed at least four runs, though he also matched his season high with 13 strikeouts on the afternoon. Strider has now recorded double-digit strikeouts in three consecutive starts, with Thursday's performance already putting him over 200 strikeouts for the season.
Jul 16 2023Strider (11-3) took the loss against the White Sox on Saturday, pitching six innings and allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out 10 batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider displayed plenty of his usual dominance, racking up 26 whiffs and 10 strikeouts. However, the right-hander was knocked around a bit when he wasn't missing bats, as four of the eight hits against him went for extra bases, including a go-ahead homer by Jake Burger in Strider's final frame. The All-Star hurler has notched double-digit strikeouts in seven different starts this season, and he leads MLB with 176 punchouts overall. He's also tied for the league lead with 11 wins, though his 3.66 ERA is nearly a run worse than the 2.67 mark he posted as a rookie last year.
Jul 8 2023Strider improved to 11-2 with a win against Tampa Bay on Saturday. He pitched 6.1 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out 11 batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider wrapped up an All-Star first half in dominant fashion, racking up 25 swinging strikes and 11 punchouts over 6.1 scoreless frames. He grabbed his seventh win over his past eight starts, a span during which he's posted a 4.02 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 69:13 K:BB over 47 innings. Strider leads MLB with 166 punchouts on the campaign, and he's tied with Zac Gallen and Shane McClanahan (back) for first with 11 victories. The right-hander has notched double-digit strikeouts in six of his 18 starts.
Jul 2 2023Strider (10-2) earned the win Sunday, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and one walk over 6.2 innings against the Marlins. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider picked up his fourth consecutive win Sunday, fanning nine batters across 6.2 frames. The 24-year-old has been the MLB's premier strikeout pitcher, leading the league with 155 punchouts and a 14.2 K/9 while racking up eight or more K's in 14 of his 17 starts. After enduring a rough patch in early June where he gave up 13 runs over two appearances (nine innings), Strider has bounced back with four earned runs across his last three starts (19.2 innings) to bring his ERA to 3.66 on the year. He's expected to toe the mound once more before the All-Star break in a projected matchup with the Rays at Tropicana Field next weekend.
Jun 27 2023Strider (9-2) earned the win Monday, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over seven innings against the Twins. He struck out 10. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider struck out at least 10 batters for the fifth time this season and earned his fifth win over his last six starts. During that stretch, he's posted a 49:11 K:BB and 13.0 K/9. Overall, Strider holds a 3.73 ERA and 1.11 WHIP, but those numbers are skewed by a poor performance against the Mets on June 8. If you take that game out of the equation, Strider has a 3.08 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 138:30 K:BB across 15 appearances (87.2 innings). He's currently lined up for a home matchup versus the Marlins in his next start.
Jun 20 2023Strider (8-2) earned the win Tuesday, allowing a run on eight hits over six innings against the Phillies. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was an encouraging effort from Strider after he'd allowed 13 runs over his last two outings (nine innings). It's the 10th time in 15 starts that he's logged nine or more strikeouts. The 24-year-old Strider leads the league with 136 punchouts while recording a 3.93 ERA and 1.15 WHIP across 84.2 innings. He's currently lined up for a road matchup with the Reds in his next start.
Jun 14 2023Strider (7-2) picked up the win in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Tigers, surrendering five runs on seven hits -- including three home runs -- and two walks over five innings in a 10-7 victory. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander had his start Tuesday bumped back a day due to inclement weather, and the disruption in his routine appeared to have an impact as he also plunked a batter and fired two wild pitches. Strider served up more than two homers in a game for the first time in his career and was facing a 4-0 deficit after two innings, but he gutted out three more frames and stuck around long enough for Atlanta's offense to come roaring back. Strider still flashed some of his usual dominance, producing 17 swinging strikes on 94 pitches, but after two rough starts in a row he sports a surprising 4.12 ERA on the season despite a league-leading 127 strikeouts in 78.2 innings.
Jun 13 2023Strider's start versus the Tigers on Tuesday was postponed due to inclement weather, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The game will be made up on Wednesday with a straight doubleheader in Detroit. Strider should be on the hill for one of those two games, with Reese Olson -- his scheduled opponent on Tuesday -- also likely to go Wednesday.
Jun 9 2023Strider allowed eight runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out eight batters over four innings in a no-decision against the Mets on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider had his usual swing-and-miss stuff working, as he racked up 17 whiffs. However, he was hit hard by the Mets, who tagged him for a pair of homers. Both the eight hits and eight runs Strider allowed were season-worst marks, and this was just the second time in 13 starts that he's served up multiple long balls. Strider's ERA jumped to 3.79 as a result of the poor outing, but he has a good chance of bouncing back in what lines up to be a juicy matchup against Detroit his next time out.
Jun 3 2023Strider (6-2) allowed two runs on three hits and four walks with seven strikeouts in six innings, earning the win Saturday over Arizona. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The four walks were a season high, but he was able to work around the free passes despite less-than-dominant stuff. Strider still managed to throw 63 of 99 pitches for strikes, including 15 whiffs. Walk rate is about the only thing he could improve on this year -- he's posted a 3.4 BB/9 so far. Strider is at a 2.97 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 113 strikeouts through 69.2 innings. He's lined up for a favorable home start against the Nationals next week.
May 28 2023Strider (5-2) allowed two runs on two hits and a walk over six innings Sunday, striking out nine and earning a win over the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider was dominant as usual Sunday, with the only misstep coming in the third inning when he served up a two-run shot to Brandon Marsh. After allowing two homers through his first eight starts, Strider has now been taken deep four times in his last three outings. Still, he's maintained a 2.97 ERA with a stellar 106:22 K:BB through 63.2 frames. The second-year star registered a 3.57 ERA over four starts since his last win May 1. Strider's next outing is expected to come at home against the Diamondbacks.
May 23 2023Strider (4-2) took the loss Tuesday, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks over 6 innings against the Dodgers. He struck out 11. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider got off to a sluggish start to the contest, giving up a leadoff double to Mookie Betts, who would come around to score on a Will Smith single, then being tagged by Jason Heyward for a solo homer to start the second. He recovered nicely following the second frame, retiring 12 of the 14 batters he would face before being pulled. Tuesday's game marked Strider's second consecutive start allowing four runs, however, both outings have come against high-octane offenses in the Rangers and the Dodgers. Though Strider is expected to take on a tough Philadelphia lineup in his next start, he remains an elite fantasy option, especially in points leagues and daily formats where strikeouts reign supreme.
May 17 2023Strider allowed four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out seven over five innings in a no-decision versus the Rangers on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The seven strikeouts were a season low, and this was also the first start in which Strider's allowed multiple home runs this season. Atlanta was able to rally over the eighth and ninth innings to get him off the hook for the loss. The 24-year-old is now at a 2.96 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 86:18 K:BB across 51.2 innings. He's been limited to five frames in three of his last four outings. Strider is projected for a tough home start next week against the Dodgers.
May 12 2023Strider (4-1) took the loss Friday as Atlanta fell 3-0 to the Blue Jays, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk over 6.2 innings. He struck out 12. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's the third time in his last four starts Strider punched out double-digit batters, but the right-hander was outdueled by Chris Bassitt, who tossed a shutout for Toronto. Strider generated a stunning 49 called or swinging strikes among his 110 pitches, and he'll take a 2.70 ERA and 79:15 K:BB through 46.2 innings into his next outing, likely to come on the road next week against the Rangers.
May 6 2023Strider allowed two runs on four hits and no walks while striking out 10 batters over five innings against Baltimore on Saturday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider was outstanding against Baltimore, inducing 21 swinging strikes and notching double-digit punchouts for the second time this season. However, he threw a hefty 95 pitches over five frames, causing him to miss out on a chance at a quality start. The right-hander was in position for a victory when he departed, but a pair of sixth-inning Orioles runs stuck him with a no-decision and ended his personal three-game winning streak. Strider has thus far avoided any sort of sophomore slump after a fabulous rookie campaign last season. He leads MLB with 67 strikeouts and has posted a 2.70 ERA and 0.93 WHIP across 40 innings.
May 1 2023Strider improved to 4-0 with a win over the Mets in the first game of a doubleheader Monday. He pitched five innings, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out eight batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Atlanta staked Strider to a 6-1 lead after two innings, but he served up a three-run homer to Pete Alonso in the following frame that brought the score much closer. To his credit, Strider bounced back by retiring the final nine batters he faced, allowing him to hang around just long enough to pick up his fourth win. The right-hander walked three but tossed 74 of his 107 pitches for a strike, and he did his usual standout work missing bats by notching 15 swings-and-misses. The four earned runs Strider allowed were a season high while the eight strikeouts were a season low, which speaks to how well he has pitched as a whole through six starts.
Apr 30 2023Strider and Atlanta won't face the Mets on Sunday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather in Queens. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The two teams have now had two consecutive games postponed for weather-related reasons. Atlanta and New York will make up the postponement from Saturday as part of a split doubleheader Aug. 12, while Sunday's postponed contest will be made up as part of a straight doubleheader Monday. Expect Strider to take the hill for one of those two contests.
Apr 29 2023Strider will not start Saturday against the Mets after the game was postponed due to inclement weather in Queens, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This game will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on Aug. 12. The two teams will try to fit in Sunday's tilt, with Strider slated to get the start for Atlanta, but the forecast for the New York area calls for sustained rain throughout the remainder of the weekend. Strider stands 3-0 with a brilliant 1.80 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 49:11 K:BB in 30 innings (five starts) this season.
Apr 6 2023Strider didn't factor in the decision against San Diego on Thursday, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out nine batters over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As usual, opposing hitters found it difficult to make contact against Strider, as the hurler racked up 18 swinging strikes and punched out nine batters. However, the lack of contact -- along with three walks -- resulted in a high pitch count for the right-hander, as he needed 101 pitches to get through five frames. That could have been enough for Strider to earn a win, but Atlanta's bullpen was unable to hold the 4-3 lead he carried at the time of his departure. Through two starts, Strider is tied for second in MLB with 18 strikeouts, and he's posted a 2.45 ERA and 1.18 WHIP across 11 innings.
Apr 1 2023Strider (1-0) picked up the win in Saturday's 7-1 victory over the Nationals, allowing three hits and three walks over six scoreless innings while striking out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 24-year-old right-hander picked up right where he left off in 2022, generating 16 swinging strikes among his 96 pitches (68 strikes) as he sliced through an overmatched Washington lineup. Strider racked up 202 strikeouts in only 131.2 innings last year, and a full season in the rotation could allow him to post some unthinkable strikeout numbers in 2023. His next start will likely come at home against the Padres next week.
Mar 20 2023Atlanta manager Brian Snitker told reporters that Strider threw five-plus innings in Monday's minor-league game, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There's no word on Strider's stats for that contest, but the important thing in exhibition season is that the right-hander is getting his work in. After a strong rookie campaign that saw him strike out 38.3 percent of the hitters he faced over 131.2 innings of work, Strider is being drafted as one of the top starting options in baseball, and his swing-and-miss arsenal makes that an easy decision to justify.
Mar 10 2023Strider gave up a run on three hits over 3.1 innings while striking out five during Thursday's split-squad game against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander fired 42 of 57 pitches for strikes in his third appearance of the spring. Strider has a 9:2 K:BB through 8.1 innings in Grapefruit League action, and after a dazzling rookie campaign that saw him fan 202 batters in only 131.2 frames for a 38.3 percent strikeout rate, Atlanta is counting on the 24-year-old to emerge as a true ace in 2023.
Mar 5 2023Strider gave up three hits and a walk over three scoreless innings while striking out three in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander has yet to allow a run through his first five spring innings, posting a 4:2 K:BB. Strider is coming off a dazzling rookie season that saw him top 200 strikeouts despite pitching only 131.2 innings for Atlanta, and the 24-year-old right-hander could emerge as a true ace in 2023 if his changeup joins his high-90s fastball and nasty slider as a plus offering.
Feb 22 2023Strider retired all three batters he faced Wednesday while throwing his first simulated game of spring training, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After an outstanding rookie season, Strider appears to be picking up right where he left off to kick off spring training, with Toscano noted that the right-hander's 15-pitch outing included strikeouts of Ronald Acuna and Ozzie Albies. Heading into his age-24 season, Strider will likely face a soft innings cap compared to some of the game's top-tier starters, but he proved as a rookie that he doesn't need big volume to turn in brilliant fantasy production. He was one of only 11 pitchers to finish with 200-plus strikeouts in 2022, despite covering 30 fewer innings than any of those other 10 hurlers.
Oct 14 2022Strider (oblique) will start Game 3 of the NLDS on Friday against the Phillies, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider will return to the mound for the first time since Sept. 18 following an oblique injury. It's unlikely that he'll be able to pitch a full workload in the contest, but the right-hander is a welcomed addition for Atlanta after having posted a 2.67 ERA and 0.99 WHIP with 12.8 K/9 this season. As a result of Strider starting Game 3, Charlie Morton will now toe the rubber in Saturday's Game 4 matchup.
Oct 11 2022Strider (oblique) will be on Atlanta's NLDS roster. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider had an outstanding rookie season, posting a 2.67 ERA and 38.3 percent strikeout rate in 131.2 innings, but it was cut short in mid-September due to an oblique strain. While he will in fact be able to make it back for the postseason, it's unclear what sort of role he'll be able to play, as his experience as a reliever could lead Atlanta to deploy him that way if he isn't built up enough to start. Per Jeff Schultz of The Athletic, a Game 3 start for Strider is possible, though that could also go to Charlie Morton.
Oct 10 2022Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said Strider (oblique) looked good during a bullpen session Sunday, but the team is still in the process of determining the rookie right-hander's role for its National League Division Series with he Phillies, Maria Torres of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: At the very least, Strider won't be available to start Games 1 and 2, as Atlanta plans on having Max Fried and Kyle Wright take the hill Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Charlie Morton will likely have the inside track in another spot in Atlanta's four-man rotation, but Strider could be in consideration to start Game 3 on Friday or Game 4 on Saturday if the team is comfortable with him from a health and workload standpoint. Even if Strider isn't quite built up enough to start after closing the regular season on the 15-day injured list with a left oblique strain, he should have a role out of the bullpen as a multi-inning reliever. After a brilliant first full season in the big leagues in which he went 11-5 with a 2.67 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and a whopping 202 strikeouts over 131.2 innings, the 23-year-old was rewarded Monday with a six-year, $75 million contract extension.
Oct 9 2022Atlanta is optimistic about Strider's (oblique) chances of being ready for the NLDS against Philadelphia, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider has been on the 15-day injured list since suffering a left oblique strain in late September, but he's been ramping up his throwing of late. Per O'Brien, the team will watch him throw more over the next 48 hours before making a final decision on his NLDS roster status.
Oct 4 2022Strider (oblique) had no issues while throwing on flat ground Tuesday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 23-year-old had been shut down from throwing due to the oblique strain since his last start Sept. 18, but he's now been cleared to start up a throwing program. Strider remains without an official return timeline, though he seems unlikely to make enough progress within the next week to be available for the start of the NLDS.
Sep 30 2022Strider (oblique) has not been cleared to resume throwing, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider won't be returning during the regular season, but Atlanta hopes to make another deep playoff run, so Strider's status remains relevant. He has not pitched since Sept. 18 due to an oblique strain.
Sep 24 2022Strider was placed on the 15-day injured list with a left oblique strain Saturday, retroactive to Sept. 21. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider dealt with an oblique issue following his most recent start, and he'll ultimately be sidelined for the remainder of the regular season. The right-hander will be eligible to return for the start of the postseason, and he's expected to be ready for the team's first playoff series, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. Bryce Elder is a strong candidate to remain in Atlanta's rotation, while Alan Rangel was recalled Saturday.
Sep 20 2022Strider is dealing with a sore oblique and will be pushed back a few days, so he may not make a start this week, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He lined up to start Friday in Philadelphia, so if he is indeed pushed back "a few" days, he could pitch early next week in Washington. Bryce Elder, who is entering the rotation Wednesday, could stick around in the rotation if Strider needs to miss more than one turn through the rotation.
Sep 18 2022Strider (11-5) allowed one run on a hit and three walks over six innings Sunday, striking out 10 and earning a win over the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider fired five shutout frames before Alec Bohm tagged him with a solo shot in the sixth inning. The electrifying rookie recorded double-digit strikeouts for the sixth time this season and now owns a terrific 202:45 K:BB through just 131.2 frames. Strider has given up two or fewer earned runs in 13 of his last 15 starts, posting a 2.25 ERA across 84 frames during that stretch. He's lined up to start in Philadelphia next week.
Sep 13 2022Strider (10-5) took the loss against San Francisco on Monday, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits and one walk while striking out nine batters over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider didn't have his best stuff in the outing, as he needed 102 pitches to make it through five shaky frames. The Giants racked up nine hits against him, but only one (a Thairo Estrada double) went for extra bases. That allowed Strider to keep the damage on the scoreboard to a minimum by going to his swing-and-miss stuff -- he finished four of his five frames with a strikeout, three of the swinging variety. Strider has struck out at least nine batters in four of his past five starts and ranks sixth in MLB with 192 punchouts on the campaign.
Sep 2 2022Strider (9-4) earned the win over Colorado on Thursday, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out 16 batters over eight scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider overpowered the Rockies in his most impressive performance as a big leaguer, racking up 22 swinging strikes among his 106 pitches. The strikeout total established a new franchise record in a nine-inning game, surpassing the 15 K's recorded by John Smoltz in both 1992 and 2005 and Warren Spahn in 1960. Strider has posted five double-digit strikeout performances across 17 starts this season and ranks ninth in the league with 176 punchouts despite hurling only 114.2 innings. As icing on the cake, he appears to be getting stronger as the season winds down -- over his past four starts, the rookie right-hander has gone 3-0 while registering a 1.08 ERA, 0.72 WHIP and 36:4 K:BB over 25 frames.
Aug 26 2022Strider (8-4) earned the win Friday over the Cardinals, allowing one run on six hits, a walk and a hit batsman with seven strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider threw 72 of 102 pitches for strikes in a sharp start. This was the fifth time in his last six outings he's limited opponents to one run. The right-hander trimmed his ERA to 2.87 with a 1.03 WHIP and 158:38 K:BB across 106.2 innings through 27 appearances (16 starts) this season. He'll look to keep this good stretch going in his next start, tentatively projected for next week at home versus Colorado.
Aug 20 2022Strider allowed a run on three hits and two walks while striking out nine over six innings in a no-decision versus the Astros on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since the start of July, Strider has allowed one run or fewer in seven of his nine outings. He's allowed 15 runs across 47 innings in that stretch as he continues to impress in his rookie year. His lone mistake Saturday was a solo home run to Jeremy Pena in the fifth inning. Strider owns a 2.95 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 151:37 K:BB through 100.2 innings across 26 appearances (15 starts). He's lined up for a road start in St. Louis next week.
Aug 16 2022Strider (7-4) picked up the win in Monday's 13-1 rout of the Mets, allowing one run on three hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The rookie failed to get out of the third inning in his last start, also against the Mets, but Strider was sharper this time around and benefitted from an offensive eruption by Atlanta. He's showing some signs of fatigue in his first full season in the majors, lasting longer than five innings only twice in his last six starts, but Strider still sports a 4.03 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 40:10 K:BB through 29 innings over that stretch. Given his dominance, expect Atlanta to continue finding ways to give him some extra rest down the stretch with an eye toward having him available for the playoffs, but a full shutdown seems unlikely -- the 23-year-old tossed 96.1 innings across all levels last season and only sits at 94.2 innings so far in 2022, so there should still be plenty of gas left in his tank.
Aug 7 2022Strider (6-4) allowed four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five over 2.2 innings, taking the loss Sunday versus the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was announced Strider won't face an innings limit this season, his first as a big-league starter. What could see him lose his spot in the rotation is poor performance, as he's had a couple of poor outings in going 2-2 across his last four starts. In that span, he's allowed 11 runs across 19.1 frames, though he's also posted a 28:6 K:BB. After Sunday's dud, he owns a 3.11 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 138:34 K:BB through 89.2 innings in 24 appearances (13 starts). The 23-year-old right-hander will look to bounce back next weekend in a projected road start in Miami.
Aug 4 2022Strider does not have an innings cap this season, and Atlanta has no immediate plans to shift him back to the bullpen despite the addition of Jake Odorizzi at the trade deadline, Maria Torres and David O'Brien of The Athletic report. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider has been spectacular as a rookie this season, posting a 3.02 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 96:21 K:BB through only 62.2 innings since moving into the rotation in late May. The 23-year-old righty tossed 96.1 innings across all levels in 2021 and is quickly approaching that figure this season, causing concerns about his workload, but as yet he isn't showing any signs of fatigue and Atlanta has no intention of removing him from the rotation until it seems necessary. Odorizzi does give the club some insurance in case Strider or another young pitcher falters down the stretch, but for now the veteran hurler will work as a sixth starter and swing man.
Aug 2 2022Strider (6-3) earned the victory Tuesday over Philadelphia, striking out 13 in 6.2 innings while allowing a run on three hits and a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Outside of consecutive hits in the second inning that led to Philadelphia's only run, Strider absolutely dominated. At one point he retired 13 batters in a row, nine by strikeout. It was the fourth time he's reached double-digit strikeouts in a game and the first time he's punched out as many as 13. With 133 strikeouts in 87 innings and only five homers allowed, he's putting together one of the best rookie seasons in baseball this year.
Jul 27 2022Strider (5-3) picked up the win in Tuesday's 6-3 victory over the Phillies, allowing one run on three hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The rookie shut the Philadelphia offense down completely until serving up a solo shot to Kyle Schwarber in the sixth inning, but Atlanta already held a 5-0 lead at that point. Strider delivered his fourth quality start in his last six outings on a tidy 90 pitches (61 strikes), and he boasts a dazzling 2.20 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 48:9 K:BB through 32.2 innings over that stretch.
Jul 17 2022Strider (4-3) allowed five runs on four hits and two walks over four innings Sunday, striking out four and taking a loss against Washington. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Most of the damage against Strider came during an ugly four-run second inning; he yielded a two-run single to Ehire Adrianza and a two-run homer to Victor Robles in the frame. It was Strider's second straight start of fewer than five innings after tossing six innings in each of his previous three outings. The 23-year-old is now sporting a 3.03 ERA with a 114:30 K:BB through 21 appearances (10 starts).
Jul 12 2022Strider allowed a run on five hits, three walks and a hit batsman while striking out eight in 4.2 innings in a 4-1 win Tuesday over the Mets. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider held the Mets scoreless through the first four innings but ran into trouble in the fifth. With two outs, he gave up a run-scoring triple to Francisco Lindor and issued an intentional walk to Pete Alonso before being removed, having thrown 103 pitches. Over his last four starts including Tuesday, the 23-year-old has fanned 38 batters in 23.1 innings and allowed just two runs on 13 hits.
Jul 7 2022Strider struck out 12 in six scoreless innings while allowing two runs on two hits Thursday in a 3-2 loss in extra innings against St. Louis. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider struck out eight batters in the first three innings and allowed just one baserunner over the next three frames. The 23-year-old has found his stride of late, allowing one run on eight hits while compiling a 30:3 K:BB in 18 innings over three starts. His next start will likely be early next week against the Mets.
Jul 2 2022Strider (4-2) earned the win Saturday, allowing one run on one hit and one walk over six innings against the Reds. He struck out 11. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider's rookie breakout continued with his second double-digit strikeout game of the season and arguably his best overall performance to date in the big leagues. He induced a whopping 24 swinging strikes on 93 pitches, and Cincinnati was only able to scratch a run across after a hit-by-pitch, a wild pitch and a single. Strider had a recent bump in the road against San Francisco (six earned runs in 3.2 innings), but he's flashing frontline starter potential.
Jun 26 2022Strider pitched six shutout innings Sunday versus the Dodgers, allowing five hits while striking out seven and walking none in a no-decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider was tagged for six runs by the Giants in his last start, but he bounced back with an excellent performance against one of the National League's top teams. The rookie right-hander submitted his longest start of the year, throwing 64 of 95 pitches for strikes while keeping runs off the board for the second time in six starts since he joined the rotation. He owns a 3.02 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 79:22 K:BB through 53.2 innings overall. Strider is expected to make his next start on the road in Cincinnati next weekend.
Jun 22 2022Strider gave up six earned runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four over 3.2 innings in a 12-10 loss to the Giants in Tuesday. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider struggled against a veteran Giants team that chased him after only 3.2 innings. He had previously been effective for the Braves since being moved to the rotation last month, and he came in to face the Giants fresh off of an 11-strikeout performance against the Nationals on June 16th. Strider has electric stuff, including a fastball which averages 98 mph, but it remains to be seen if his mainly two-pitch repertoire (fastball-slider) will play as a starter over the long term. He will look to bounce back in his next start which tentatively lines up for Sunday at home against the Dodgers.
Jun 16 2022Strider (3-2) gave up two earned runs on one hit and two walks while striking out a career-high 11 batters Wednesday against the Nationals. He picked up the win. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was Strider's best start of his career, as he tied his career high with 5.2 innings and blew past his previous career high of eight strikeouts. He topped out at 100.9 mph and average 98.8 mph with his fastball, which had a 33 percent whiff rate in this outing. His slider registered a 48 percent whiff rate, and he threw his changeup just four times out of 106 total pitches. Strider has a 1.76 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 24:8 K:BB in 15.1 innings over his last three starts. He may get a pair of starts next week against the Giants and Dodgers, both of which would come at home.
Jun 10 2022Strider (2-2) allowed four hits and a walk over 5.2 scoreless innings Friday, striking out eight and earning a win over the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider gave up just four singles while turning in his first shutout appearance as a starter. His eight punchouts tied a season high from his May 6 outing against the Brewers. The 23-year-old touched triple-digits with his fastball while forcing 18 whiffs. Strider now owns a 2.35 ERA with a 57:19 K:BB through 38.1 frames. He's lined up to start in Washington next week.
Jun 4 2022Strider didn't factor into the decision during Saturday's 6-2 victory over Colorado, allowing one run on two hits and five walks with five strikeouts in four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his second start, Strider rebounded from a poor performance to permit just one run despite loading the bases in both the third and fourth innings. It's been a mixed transition to the rotation for the 23-year-old who's allowed six runs and seven walks across his two starts after opening the year as a surprisingly shutdown reliever. The positive has been Strider's pitch count of 72 and 87 pitches in his last two games after averaging 37 pitches per appearance in his first 11 games.
Jun 2 2022Strider is listed as Atlanta's starting pitcher for Saturday's game in Colorado. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Strider failed to escape the fifth inning and allowed five runs -- one shy of the total he surrendered in his first 11 relief appearances -- in his first MLB start Monday in Arizona, the hard-throwing rookie had some positive takeaways from the outing. He retired 11 of the 19 batters he faced via strikeout or groundout, and Mark Bowman of MLB.com notes that defensive misplays by Marcell Ozuna and Adam Duvall that didn't go down in the scorebook as errors contributed to Strider's ERA ballooning from 2.22 to 3.45. A trip to Coors Field isn't ideal for Strider as he attempts to whittle down his ERA, but he still looks like Atlanta's best option for the No. 5 starter role with the team having already cycled through a number of other pitchers at the back end of the rotation to little success this season.
May 30 2022Strider (1-2) was tagged with the loss against Arizona on Monday, allowing five runs on four hits and two walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There was lots of hype about Strider's move into a starting role after he tallied a 2.22 ERA and 13.7 K/9 across 11 appearances as a reliever to begin the season, but the transition didn't go as smoothly as Atlanta hoped. The right-hander gave up three runs in the first inning and two more in the fifth before he was lifted for a reliever after 72 pitches. On a more positive note, Strider racked up 14 swinging strikes and seven punchouts, showcasing his ability to fool batters when he's at his best. Should he stick in the rotation, Strider will face a challenge in his next start, which is scheduled to take place in Colorado this weekend.
May 29 2022Strider is listed as Atlanta's scheduled starting pitcher for Monday's game in Arizona, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The rookie right-hander has been a standout in the Atlanta bullpen this season with a 2.22 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 37:11 K:BB across 24.1 innings, but he'll finally get a look in the rotation as the team attempts to put an end to its revolving door at the No. 5 starter spot. With Tucker Davidson being banished to Triple-A Gwinnett after issuing four walks in each of his past two starts, Strider will get the chance to bring stability at the back end of the Atlanta rotation. Since he hasn't covered more than four innings or 71 pitches in any of his extended relief outings this season, Strider might not be stretched out enough to handle a traditional starting role Monday, but he should be capable of offering fantasy managers strong ratios even if he faces a restricted workload. The 23-year-old looks like a strong speculative pickup in shallower leagues where he's still available.
May 19 2022Strider struck out the side in a perfect seventh inning Wednesday to record his first hold of the season in an extra-innings loss to the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The rookie looked very comfortable in his new setup role, but the rest of the Atlanta bullpen wasn't able to get the job done. Strider has a dominant 40.0 percent strikeout rate through 20.2 innings this season with a 2.61 ERA and 1.02 WHIP, and while he's no threat to Kenley Jansen in the closer spot, he should be able to collect holds quickly with more high-leverage usage.
May 17 2022Atlanta manager Brian Snitker suggested after Monday's 1-0 loss at Milwaukee that Strider will likely handle more higher-leverage work late in games in the wake of Tyler Matzek's (shoulder) impending move to the 15-day injured list, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. "When you lose a guy of [Matzek's] caliber, we may need Strider to fill those late-inning leverage innings," Snitker said. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: When Atlanta optioned Bryce Elder and Kyle Muller to Triple-A Gwinnett on May 1, Strider looked like a potential candidate to step into the final opening in the rotation, but the big club will instead promote Tucker Davidson from Gwinnett to give him another look as the No. 5 starter beginning with Tuesday's game against the Brewers. After working a career-high four innings in a bulk-relief role May 6, Strider would have been reasonably stretched out enough for starting duty, but Atlanta apparently believes he'll provide more value out of the bullpen as a high-leverage, multi-inning arm late in games. Look for Atlanta to stay away from Strider on Tuesday, however, as he tossed two scoreless innings in a 26-pitch relief appearance Monday.
May 7 2022Strider gave up four hits and struck out eight over four scoreless innings of relief but didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 6-3 loss to the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Entering the game after opener Jesse Chavez had coughed up two runs in the first inning, Strider shut down the Milwaukee offense and gave Atlanta a chance to tie the game up. Unfortunately, as soon as the rookie right-hander exited after firing 69 pitches (50 strikes), the Brewers' bats got rolling again. Strider battled some control issues in April, walking multiple batters in three straight appearances, but he appears to be tightening things up and has 13 strikeouts against only one walk over his last two outings and 7.2 innings. Atlanta has struggled to find a consistent fifth starter so far this season, but Strider could soon get a look in the rotation given his recent improvements. On the season, he sports a 2.16 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 24:9 K:BB through 16.2 innings.
Apr 18 2022Strider didn't give up a hit or a run over 3.2 innings of relief in Sunday's loss to the Padres, walking three and striking out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The flamethrowing rookie continues to pile up whiffs and now boasts a 32.4 percent strikeout rate through his first nine big-league innings, but Strider's 17.6 percent walk rate seems likely to keep him from working his way out of a long relief role any time soon. His upside is sky high, whether as a future closer or with a move into the rotation, but for now the 23-year-old has more value as a dynasty asset than in redraft fantasy formats.
Apr 8 2022Strider struck out five over two perfect innings of relief in Thursday's loss to the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Entering the game with Atlanta down 6-1 in the top of the seventh inning, Strider sliced through the heart of Cincinnati's lineup. The rookie right-hander needed only 24 pitches (16 strikes) to breeze through his outing, hitting triple digits with his fastball twice and consistently sitting at 99 mph with his heater. Strider figures to handle a multi-inning role in a stacked Atlanta bullpen to begin the season, but his ability to pile up strikeouts while collecting the occasional win or hold should still give him fantasy value in deeper formats even if he doesn't graduate to a more high-profile gig.
Apr 3 2022Strider is set to make Atlanta's Opening Day roster, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barring any late roster additions, Strider, Tucker Davidson and William Contreras will be in the majors to open the season. Strider was competing for a rotation spot but will begin the campaign as a bullpen option, though he could also see some work as a sixth starter. The 23-year-old righty made his big-league debut with two appearances last season and spent most of the year at Double-A Mississippi, where he had a 4.71 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 94:29 K:BB over 63 innings.
Mar 25 2022Strider gave up four hits and struck out three over two scoreless innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Twins and hit 100 mph with four of his pitches, Gabriel Burns of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In addition to clocking triple digits, 20 of Strider's 29 pitches in the outing reached 96 mph. The 23-year-old right hander made a dramatic ascent through the Atlanta system last season, starting out in Low-A but ending the year in the big-league bullpen, and it's easy to see why after Tuesday's performance. Strider is expected to begin the season at Triple-A Gwinnett, but it's not yet clear whether the organization will stretch him back out as a starter -- he started 14 games for Double-A Mississippi in 2021 and posted a 94:29 K:BB in 63 innings, albeit with a 4.71 ERA and 1.22 WHIP -- or whether he'll continue his development as a potential high-leverage bullpen arm.
Oct 8 2021Strider was not included on Atlanta's NLDS roster against Milwaukee ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider debuted and threw 2.1 innings of relief on the final weekend of the regular season, allowing one run on two hits and walking one batter. Despite speculation that he may have a spot in the postseason bullpen, he'll be unavailable for the duration of the NLDS.
Oct 4 2021Strider (1-0) earned the win in relief Sunday against the Mets after tossing 1.1 scoreless innings, walking one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider, who spent most of the season at Double-A Mississippi and posted a 4.71 ERA through 63 innings (14 starts), made his MLB debut earlier this week and now recorded the first big-league win of his career during the regular-season finale piggybacking Charlie Morton's 2.2-inning start -- he looked quite good, recording four outs and earning the win while also tossing 14 of his 22 pitches for strikes. He's not likely to be a factor in Atlanta's postseason run, but there's no question this was a positive year for the fourth-round pick in the 2020 MLB Draft.
Oct 1 2021Strider had his contract selected by Atlanta on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strider is in the midst of his first professional campaign and is now poised to make his MLB debut in the final days of the regular season. He spent most of the season at Double-A Mississippi and posted a 4.71 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 95:29 K:BB across 63 innings (14 starts). The 22-year-old is unlikely to be a factor on Atlanta's postseason roster given his inexperience, but it will still be a good opportunity to get his feet wet in the majors.
Sep 27 2021Atlanta plans to promote Strider on Monday from Double-A Mississippi to Triple-A Gwinnett, Eric Cole of TalkingChop.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 2020 fourth-round pick will move on to his fourth different level of the season after kicking off his inaugural professional campaign at Low-A Augusta. He eventually saw most of his action in 2021 at Mississippi, where he produced a 4.71 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and a 95:29 K:BB in 63 innings. The 22-year-old right-hander will now get the chance to pick up a few more innings out of the Gwinnett bullpen down the stretch, potentially setting him up for a full-time assignment in the Triple-A club's bullpen heading into 2022.
