Jun 30 2025Gonzalez is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez had been included in the lineup in the four of the Red Sox's last five games, but three of those starts came against left-handed pitching. The 28-year-old looks to be stuck in the short side of a platoon at first base with Abraham Toro for the time being, though Gonzalez could get more looks at second base versus right-handed pitching if David Hamilton (.506 OPS in 116 plate appearances) continues to languish.
Jun 28 2025Gonzalez went 3-for-5 with a double and a two-run home run during Saturday's 15-1 win over Toronto. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez registered a season-high three hits for the third time this year and added to the blowout in the seventh inning, when he took Mason Fluharty deep to center field for a 446-foot, two-run home run. Gonzalez got the start at first base Saturday, but his versatility to play at the keystone and the hot corner should allow him to see some consistent playing time, especially with Kristian Campbell in Triple-A Worcester.
Jun 23 2025Gonzalez started at second base and went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Sunday's 9-5 loss to the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Per usual, manager Alex Cora got Gonzalez's bat in the lineup against a lefty. Gonzalez typically plays first base, but Cora kept the productive Abraham Toro there and used Gonzalez at second base Sunday, the first game that Boston has faced a lefty since it demoted Kristian Campbell. The move worked offensively, as Gonzalez took Robbie Ray deep for his second homer of the season, but he also had a crucial error that led to three unearned runs crossing the plate. Gonzalez owns a 1.076 OPS against southpaws in 2025.
Jun 8 2025Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run, two additional runs and a double in a 10-7 win against the Yankees on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez tacked the final two runs onto the line of Yankees starter Ryan Yarbrough with a blast to left field in the fourth inning. It was the first long ball of the season for Gonzalez, who went deep six times over 216 plate appearances with Boston last year. Despite the lack of power by Gonzalez this season before Saturday, the utility man has been handy with the bat, as he's slashing .329/.368/.486 with 12 RBI, 13 runs and three stolen bases through 76 plate appearances.
Despite the lack of power prior to Saturday, the utility man has been handy with the bat, as he's slashing .329/.368/.486 with 12 RBI, 13 runs and three stolen bases through 76 plate appearances.
Jun 2 2025Gonzalez went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI during Monday's 7-6 loss to the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Out since May 7 with a quad injury, Gonzalez showed just what the Red Sox have been missing in the last month, coming through with a big two-run double in the fifth that pulled Boston within a run and brought his RBI total to eight on the year. The 28-year-old picked up right where he left off after his good start to the season, now slashing .316/.365/.439 in 63 plate appearances.
Jun 1 2025Gonzalez (quadriceps) started at first base and went 0-for-3 for Triple-A Worcester on Saturday, ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez played six innings in the field to kick off his rehab assignment. He'll start as the designated hitter for the WooSox on Sunday, per MLB.com, and could be activated as early as Monday. Gonzalez will give Boston another option at first base alongside Abraham Toro.
May 26 2025Gonzalez (quadriceps) appears to be close to beginning a rehab assignment, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez experienced a setback last week that delayed his rehab, but manager Alex Cora said Sunday the infielder is feeling better and is awaiting word from the medical team to determine his next step. Prior to his injury, Gonzalez had been part of a rotation of players at first base, covering for the injured Triston Casas (knee). The Red Sox have been leaning on Nick Sogard and Abraham Toro at the position since Gonzalez landed on the shelf with a left quad contusion.
May 21 2025Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Gonzalez (quadricep) has suffered a setback and will not be activated from the 10-day injured list when first eligible Thursday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cora didn't elaborate on how significant Gonzalez's setback was, aside from noting that the 28-year-old's left quad is still bothering him when he runs. The Red Sox have been using a combination of Nick Sogard and Abraham Toro at first base since Gonzalez was injured and will continue with that arrangement for now. Kristian Campbell has been taking pregame reps at first base and could eventually become an option at the position.
May 14 2025Red Sox manager Alex Cora believes Gonzalez (back) will be ready to return from the 10-day injured list when first eligible May 18, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez first suffered a back injury one week ago and officially landed on the IL this past weekend. It's unclear whether he will need to play any rehab games before being activated, but the infielder appears on track for activation Sunday. Once activated, Gonzalez should regain his standing as Boston's top option at first base.
May 10 2025Gonzalez (back) was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez began dealing with the back issue Wednesday and has sat two games since. The move is retroactive to May 8, though Gonzalez's timeline to return is unclear. Gonzalez's injury also makes Boston's first base situation even more dire, with Abraham Toro projected to see the majority of playing time at the position.
May 9 2025Manager Alex Cora said Friday that Gonzalez (back) could spend some time on the injured list, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: No official move has been made just yet, but the Red Sox skipper hinted toward possible roster moves Saturday that could involve Gonzalez, who hasn't played since colliding with the Rangers' Josh Smith on Wednesday. Abraham Toro has been filling in at first base recently with Gonzalez injured and Triston Casas (knee) out for the season.
May 8 2025Gonzalez (back) is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Rangers, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez has been serving as Boston's primary option at first base since Triston Casas suffered a ruptured patella tendon Friday, but the former was forced out of Wednesday's 6-4 win due to back stiffness and will need at least one game off to recover. Abraham Toro will step in at first base in Thursday's series finale.
May 7 2025Gonzalez was pulled from Wednesday's game against the Rangers due to back stiffness, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Alex Cora said after the game that the 28-year-old infielder is fine after his collision with Texas' Josh Smith, though Gonzalez's back stiffened up on him following the incident. The Red Sox may elect to hold him out of Thursday's series finale as a precaution, though he should avoid an extended absence.
May 6 2025Gonzalez is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rangers, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old started the past two games at first base in the wake of Triston Casas' knee injury, but Abraham Toro will make his first start of the season Tuesday. Gonzalez has a .327/.382/.449 slash line with six RBI and three steals through 55 plate appearances this season, and he's likely to operate as Boston's primary first baseman as long as he continues to carry a hot bat.
May 4 2025Gonzalez started at first base and went 1-for-2 with an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored in Sunday's 5-4 loss to Minnesota. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez started at first base in both games since Triston Casas went down with a season-ending knee injury Friday. Gonzalez is relatively new to the position -- he played 18 games there last season and was part of platoon in 2025 -- and it's unclear if he'll be the permanent fill-in for Casas. He's been consistent all season, hitting safely in nine of 11 starts, and enters Monday's day off with a .327/.382/.449 slash line, three steals, six RBI and 10 runs scored over 16 games.
May 3 2025Gonzalez went 3-for-4 in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez got the start at first base Saturday and belted three singles while batting in the sixth spot in the lineup. He's expected to see the bulk of starts at first base in the short term after Triston Casas ruptured his left patellar tendon in Friday's game, with Abraham Toro providing depth at the position. How Gonzalez plays over the coming days and weeks will play a factor in how the Red Sox address the position, either internally through the farm system or externally via trade, per Ian Browne of MLB.com.
Apr 9 2025Gonzalez started at first base and went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Tuesday's 6-1 loss to the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez replaced the lefty-hitting Triston Casas at first base against Toronto southpaw Easton Lucas. It was the second time this season the Red Sox have faced a left-handed starter, and Gonzalez started at first base in both games. Red Sox manager Alex Cora talked during spring training about Casas being the everyday starter -- against righties and lefties -- but it hasn't played out that way thus far in a small sampling. Gonzalez has hit in four consecutive outings (7-for-15, five runs) and has reached base safely in all five games played.
Apr 7 2025Gonzalez went a combined 4-for-7 with an RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's doubleheader sweep over St. Louis. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez entered the matinee as a pinch hitter, singling in place of starting second baseman David Hamilton in the seventh inning, and finished out at the keystone. The utility infielder then had a big hit in Boston's two-run ninth inning against Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley, delivering a one-out double that plated the first run and put the tying run in scoring position. Boston eventually won the first game in the 10th inning. Gonzalez finished an impactful day by starting the nightcap at first base, contributing two more hits and two runs.
Mar 31 2025Gonzalez started at first base and went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Monday's 8-5 loss to Baltimore. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez made his first start of the season, filling in for Triston Casas against a lefty. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said during spring training that Casas would not be subject to a platoon, but he was on the bench with Boston facing its first lefty of the season. The decision to sit Casas may have more to do with his slow start. Including his pinch-hit appearance Monday, Casas is 1-for-17 with seven strikeouts.
Mar 26 2025Gonzalez (oblique) will be on the Red Sox' active roster for Opening Day, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez was held out of the Boston's final six Grapefruit League games as he dealt with right oblique soreness, but he's been working out in recent days and convinced the team he doesn't need a trip to the injured list. The 28-year-old will be part of the Red Sox' bench and will see some starts against southpaws.
Mar 20 2025Gonzalez (oblique) took some swings Thursday and is expected to return to game action in a few days, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez underwent an MRI on his right oblique this week, but those results evidently came back negative and he's poised to return soon. The 28-year-old Gonzalez will operate in a reserve role for the Red Sox, getting the occasional start versus lefties.
Mar 18 2025Gonzalez will undergo an MRI on Tuesday after feeling tightness in his right oblique Monday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that Gonzalez "feels like there's nothing there" but wanted to get tested as a precaution. Any injury to the oblique is cause for some concern, but at the moment, the Red Sox appear to be viewing Gonzalez as day-to-day. More will be known about Gonzalez's condition after the MRI results are in. If healthy, Gonzalez will see some starts versus lefties this season for Boston.
Sep 29 2024Gonzalez is absent from Sunday's lineup against Tampa Bay, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Enmanuel Valdez will start at third base and bat ninth in the Red Sox's regular-season finale. Unless he comes in to pinch hit, Gonzalez will end his first season with the Red Sox slashing .266/.306/.417 with 11 stolen bases, six home runs and 29 RBI across 216 plate appearances.
Sep 25 2024Gonzalez is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's contest in Toronto, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez had started three of the previous four tilts but will begin the series finale in Toronto on the bench. Nick Sogard will handle third base for the Red Sox on Wednesday.
Sep 23 2024Gonzalez is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Blue Jays, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Rafael Devers suffered a right shoulder injury Friday before landing on the injured list a day later, Gonzalez picked up each of the ensuing three starts at third base, going 3-for-10 with a home run, a stolen base and five RBI across those contests. Though he'll give way to Nick Sogard at the hot corner Monday, Gonzalez still looks to be the Red Sox's preferred option at the position entering the final week of the season.
Sep 21 2024Gonzalez is batting second and playing third base Saturday against Minnesota, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez took over for Rafael Devers at third base late in Friday's game after Devers left with a shoulder injury. Manager Alex Cora said after Friday's contest that the Red Sox will likely shut Devers down, which opens up playing time for Gonzalez and Nick Sogard at third base to close the season. It'll be Gonzalez getting the first stab at the hot corner Saturday.
Sep 7 2024Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI, three stolen bases and two runs scored in Saturday's 7-5 win over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez had not logged a steal since July 26, making him an unlikely candidate to swipe three bags in a game. Even with his show of speed Saturday, he's at 10 steals this season. The utility man has added a formidable .285/.333/.437 slash line with four home runs, 23 RBI, 19 runs scored and 10 doubles over 174 plate appearances. He hasn't been strictly limited to a short-side platoon role, but the return of Trevor Story (shoulder) may make it tougher for Gonzalez to pick up at-bats versus righties.
Aug 7 2024Gonzalez went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run in Wednesday's 8-4 loss to the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez's blast put the Red Sox ahead 3-2 in the third inning. The backup infielder has gone 4-for-11 with three homers and seven RBI over his last five contests, but that's a span that dates back to July 29. For the season, he's at a .284/.336/.477 slash line with four homers, 17 RBI, 13 runs scored and seven stolen bases through 120 plate appearances. Gonzalez is likely to remain as a right-handed-hitting platoon option at a number of positions, primarily second base.
Aug 5 2024Gonzalez went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run against the Royals in Monday's 9-5 victory. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez entered the contest in the seventh inning as a pinch hitter for Dominic Smith and promptly smashed a 452-foot, two-run homer to center field. It was his second long ball in his past four contests after he had gone deep just once over his first 98 at-bats this season. Gonzalez's overall slash line of .283/.336/.453 is pretty solid, but he doesn't see the field often enough to be a viable fantasy asset in most formats -- he plays almost exclusively against left-handed pitchers and has started just once over Boston's past seven contests.
Jul 30 2024Gonzalez entered Monday's game as a pinch hitter and went 1-for-1 with a walk, a home run and two RBI in a 14-7 win over Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Red Sox were cruising in the middle innings when manager Alex Cora decided to give Rafael Devers a break, sending up Gonzalez to hit. The pinch hitter belted a two-run home run and then finished off the game at third base. Gonzalez has hit well since the All-Star break, going 10-for-29 (.345) with five extra-base hits, two steals and five runs scored. He's typically in the lineup against left-handers, getting starts at first base or moving about the infield.
Jul 23 2024Gonzalez went 2-for-5 with a stolen base in Tuesday's 6-0 win over the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez has hit safely in four of five games since the All-Star break, and this was his second multi-hit effort in a row. The infielder also picked up his sixth steal on his eighth attempt of the year. He's at a .273/.323/.398 slash line with one home run, 10 RBI, eight runs scored, six doubles and a triple over 96 plate appearances. He's enjoyed a boost of playing time with the Red Sox facing four consecutive left-handed starters, but Gonzalez figures to cede his spot at first base to Dominic Smith against right-hander Cal Quantrill in Wednesday's series finale.
Jul 6 2024Gonzalez started at first base and went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's 5-3 extra-inning win over the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez's fifth-inning homer was all the offense Boston mustered over the first eight innings before its late-game comeback. The utility infielder has mostly worked as a pinch hitter and fill-in at all four infield positions. Gonzalez is 9-for-26 (.346) with three steals, two doubles, a home run, four RBI and three additional runs over 14 games since being activated off the injured list in mid-June.
Jun 25 2024Gonzalez entered as a pinch hitter and delivered a two-run single in the eighth inning of Monday's 7-6 win over the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez was part of a four-run uprising in the eighth that set up Boston's walk-off win. After he was sent up to pinch hit for Dominic Smith against a lefty, Toronto countered with a righty reliever, and Gonzalez delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single to tie the game. He took over at first base for the final frame. Gonzalez has served in the short side of a platoon at second base since being activated off the injured list a little more than a week ago. He's also filled in at multiple positions whenever needed.
Jun 19 2024Gonzalez went 1-for-4 with one RBI, one run scored and two steals in a 7-3 win over the Blue Jays on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez reached on an error, stole second and came around to score in the third inning then added an RBI single and another steal in the sixth. After missing most of June with a hamstring injury, Gonzalez has appeared in three straight games and drew his first start in center field of the season. He has had trouble staying healthy this season and is hitting .279 with four steals over 43 at-bats.
Jun 17 2024The Red Sox activated Gonzalez (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez has missed most of June with a hamstring issue but was cleared to rejoin the Red Sox following a brief rehab assignment. He'll check back into the starting nine at second base and as the No. 6 hitter in Monday's series opener as the Blue Jays send lefty Yusei Kikuchi to the mound. Gonzalez is expected to fill the short side of a platoon at the keystone with Enmanuel Valdez.
Jun 16 2024Gonzalez (hamstring) will travel with the Red Sox to Toronto for their upcoming three-game series with the Blue Jays and is expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list Monday or Tuesday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez completed his rehab assignment Sunday with Triple-A Worcester with a four-hit performance, and he went 6-for-10 overall while playing three of the past four days. Once activated, Gonzalez will likely supplant Jamie Westbrook as the short-side platoon mate for the lefty-hitting Enmanuel Valdez at second base.
Jun 14 2024Gonzalez (hamstring) served as the designated hitter and went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI for Triple-A Worcester on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez made his first appearance while on a rehab assignment and played five innings. Per Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe, Gonzalez is expected to start at first base Friday.
Jun 12 2024Gonzalez (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Thursday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The date of Gonzalez's first rehab game ended up being pushed back a couple days, but he's ready for game action now. Gonzalez has been out since early June with a left hamstring strain and should only need a few games in the minors before being cleared to return from the 10-day injured list.
Jun 11 2024Gonzalez (hamstring) won't start his rehab assignment Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez was scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday at Triple-A Worcester, but he's still in Boston as the Red Sox start a three-game homestand against the Phillies on Tuesday night. At this point, it's unclear when Gonzalez will head to Worcester, but he'll likely require a brief minor-league stint as part of his rehab from a strained left hamstring.
Jun 9 2024Gonzalez (hamstring) is set to begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boston's unsettled second base position offers a path to regular playing time for Gonzalez once he's activated. The right-handed hitter should be part of a rotation along with Enmanuel Valdez while Vaughn Grissom (hamstring) remains on the injured list. Even when Grissom returns, Gonzalez could still figure into the mix.
Jun 3 2024Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Sunday that he's hopeful Gonzalez (hamstring) will be ready to return from the 10-day injured list around when he's first eligible to be activated, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez was joined on the IL on Sunday by fellow infielder Vaughn Grissom, who is recovering from a right hamstring strain. Grissom's injury is believed to be the more significant of the two, as he'll be sent in for an MRI, whereas Gonzalez won't be subject to any further imaging. Assuming the tightness in his left leg subsides in the coming days and he's able to resume baseball activities, Gonzalez could be ready to return from the IL for the Red Sox's three-game series with the Phillies that begins June 11. In the meantime, the Red Sox are likely to lean on Enmanuel Valdez and Jamie Westbrook as the main options at second base, with the former occupying the strong side of a platoon.
Jun 2 2024The Red Sox placed Gonzalez on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a left hamstring strain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez was one of two Boston infielders to hit the shelf Sunday with a hamstring injury, as Vaughn Grissom (hamstring) was also deactivated. The lefty-hitting Enmanuel Valdez is expected to occupy the strong side of a platoon at second base while Grissom is on the IL, but Gonzalez might have been the preferred option at the keystone against left-handed pitching had he not strained his hamstring. Jamie Westbrook -- whose contract was selected from Triple-A Worcester on Sunday -- now profiles as a likely platoon mate for Valdez at second base.
May 27 2024Gonzalez went 1-for-4 with a walk and a three-run triple in Monday's 11-3 loss to Baltimore. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The utility man has seen inconsistent playing time for Boston this season, garnering 36 plate appearances in 14 games played. The 27-year-old will continue to draw the occasional start, especially against lefties who he has batted .316 against this season. After Monday's performance, Gonzalez is now batting .273 with zero home runs, five RBI and two runs scored.
May 15 2024Gonzalez went 1-for-1 with an RBI in Tuesday's 5-4 extra-inning win over the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez, who entered as a pinch runner for Dominic Smith in the 10th inning, stayed in the game to play first base, then delivered the game-winning run in the 12th with a single just inside the line in right field. The utility infielder has been a serviceable piece for manager Alex Cora, who has deployed him at shortstop and first base, positions where Boston's regulars have suffered significant injuries. Gonzalez has hit safely in six of eight games, going 6-for-19 (.316) with two steals, one RBI and two runs scored.
May 12 2024Gonzalez is starting at shortstop and batting in the leadoff spot for Sunday's series finale against the Nationals, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Per Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican, it's the first time this season and the fifth time in his career that Gonzalez has hit in the leadoff spot. Jarren Duran, who normally occupies the first spot in the batting order, is hitting eighth in the lineup against Nationals southpaw MacKenzie Gore. Gonzalez has appeared in five games for Boston this season, going 3-for-11 with one walk and two runs.
May 8 2024Gonzalez started at first base and went 1-for-4 in Wednesday's 5-0 loss to Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez was activated off the injured list Wednesday and was in the starting lineup against left-hander Chris Sale. It was Gonzalez's first career start at first base. The versatile infielder is expected to see significant playing time against southpaws, and the Red Sox will see two lefties in the upcoming three-game set against Washington. Boston manager Alex Cora told Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe that Gonzalez swings the bat well and feels he can lengthen the lineup from the seventh spot in the order. Nos. 7-9 in Boston's lineup were batting just .209 entering Wednesday's game.
May 7 2024The Red Sox are expected to reinstate Gonzalez (wrist) from the 10-day injured list Wednesday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez has been on the injured list since April 13 due to a left wrist sprain, and he's gone 4-for-11 with three RBI since beginning a rehab assignment at Triple-A Worcester on Friday. Once activated, the 27-year-old infielder will presumably move into a reserve role behind Vaughn Grissom and Ceddanne Rafaela.
May 3 2024Gonzalez (wrist) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a slower-than-expected recovery from a left wrist sprain, Gonzalez will now begin the final step of his rehab process. The Red Sox haven't specified exactly how long they plan on keeping the 27-year-old infielder in the minors, but he shouldn't require too long of an assignment if everything goes smoothly.
May 1 2024Gonzalez (wrist) is likely to begin a rehab assignment Thursday or Friday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez's recovery from a left wrist sprain has come along more slowly than expected, but he looks to be closing in on the final step of his recovery program. He's been out since mid-April and shouldn't need too many at-bats in the minors before being activated, assuming all goes well.
Apr 26 2024Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday that Gonzalez (wrist) isn't progressing as hoped and isn't considered close to a return from the 10-day injured list, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez was placed on the IL on April 13 with a left wrist sprain, and after an MRI revealed no structural damage, the expectation was that the infielder would be ready rejoin the Red Sox after a minimum-length stay on the shelf. However, with Gonzalez still experiencing stiffness in his wrist and having yet to resume baseball activities, he looks poised to remain out until some time in May.
Apr 18 2024An MRI on Gonzalez's left wrist came back negative Thursday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez felt pain while taking swings Wednesday, but it appears he's avoided a serious setback. The Red Sox still figure to shut him down for a bit to let the wrist calm down. Gonzalez had been hoping for a return from the injured list when his 10 days are up, but that's unlikely now.
Apr 17 2024Gonzalez (wrist) felt pain while taking swings Wednesday and is scheduled to undergo an MRI, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old appeared to be progressing well after being placed on the injured list over the weekend with a wrist sprain, but his immediate outlook is hazy after the setback. Gonzalez will be eligible to return from the injured list Sunday, but he now seems likely to be sidelined beyond the 10-day minimum.
Apr 16 2024Gonzalez (wrist) fielded grounders Tuesday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez is working his way back from a left wrist sprain, so being able to take grounders with his injured hand would appear to be a good sign. He's eligible to return Sunday and the hope is that he could be back by then or shortly after.
Apr 13 2024Gonzalez was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a left wrist sprain, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fortunately, Gonzalez avoided a fracture, but he'll still be out until at least April 21 due to the injury. Cooper Criswell, who is starting Saturday's game against the Angels, was recalled in a corresponding move. The Red Sox may have to slide Ceddanne Rafaela to second base against lefties and Pablo Reyes to shortstop, unless they are willing to play David Hamilton against same-handed pitchers.
Apr 11 2024Gonzalez did not suffer a fractured wrist Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez was held out of Thursday's lineup after suffering a wrist injury Wednesday. The issue isn't expected to be serious, which was at least initially confirmed by the X-ray results. However, he was wearing a splint Thursday, so the potential length of his absence remains unclear.
Apr 10 2024Gonzalez started at shortstop and went 1-for-3 with a walk and run scored in Wednesday's 7-5 loss to Baltimore. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez made his first start as part of planned platoon at shortstop. He was in the lineup against Oriole left-hander Cole Irvin, and the lefty-hitting David Hamilton will fill the strongside of the platoon. Hamilton is expected to start Thursday against righty Grayson Rodriguez.
Apr 9 2024Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that David Hamilton and Gonzalez will form a platoon at shortstop after Trevor Story (shoulder) landed on the injured list, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez was called up by Boston on Monday and should fill the small side of the platoon, with the lefty-hitting Hamilton likely to see most starts against righties. The Red Sox could change course at some point since Story is out for the season, but Gonzalez will have a chance to carve out a regular role in the majors.
Mar 21 2024Gonzalez was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez was claimed off waivers by the Red Sox this offseason and was competing for a utility role this spring. However, he struck out 27.8 percent of the time with only a .670 OPS across 36 plate appearances and will now be set to begin the regular season in the minors.
Mar 11 2024Gonzalez (shoulder) has appeared in 10 Grapefruit League games to date, going 3-for-20 with one home run, one stolen base and seven strikeouts against zero walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez, whom the Red Sox claimed off waivers from the White Sox in January, hasn't faced any restrictions this spring after his 2023 campaign was cut short when he underwent surgery last July to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. Though he occupies a spot on Boston's 40-man roster and is contention for a spot on the Opening Day squad as a utility player, Gonzalez still has two minor-league options remaining, which may work against him in the roster competition.
Jan 31 2024The Red Sox claimed Gonzalez (shoulder) off waivers from the White Sox on Wednesday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's unclear whether Gonzalez will be ready for Opening Day after having surgery on his right shoulder labrum last July, which could have affected the White Sox' decision to try to slip him through waivers. The Red Sox were happy to put in a claim, though, for a guy with defensive versatility and a 90.4 mph average exit velocity during his 86 games in the majors. Gonzalez also has a 36 percent strikeout rate and 2.1 percent walk rate during that span, numbers which surely will need to improve if he wants to make an impact in Boston.
Jan 26 2024Gonzalez (shoulder) was designated for assignment by the White Sox on Friday, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The club needed to clear a spot on its 40-man roster for the addition of John Brebbia. Gonzalez underwent surgery in July to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder and it's not clear whether he'll be healthy in time for Opening Day. The 27-year-old will now go through the waiver process.
Aug 11 2023Gonzalez underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder in mid-July, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This news was just revealed by the White Sox on Friday and it helps to explain why Gonzalez was transferred to the 60-day IL just before the All-Star break. The 26-year-old right-hander is aiming to be ready for the start of spring training in 2024.
Jul 2 2023The White Sox transferred Gonzalez (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Gonzalez was officially diagnosed with right shoulder inflammation upon landing on the 10-day IL on June 19, he'll wind up missing at least two months -- well beyond the timeline typically associated with the injury. With Gonzalez on the shelf until at least the second half of August, Zach Remillard may have some staying power on the White Sox's 26-man active roster as a utility infielder.
Jun 19 2023Gonzalez was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday with right shoulder inflammation, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez has dealt with the injury for nearly a week and the White Sox finally decided to put him on the IL. He'll be eligible to return on June 28, although it's unclear at this time whether he will be ready by then. Zach Remillard is starting at second base Monday and the White Sox also called up Jose Rodriguez.
Jun 17 2023Gonzalez is limited by a sore right shoulder, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez hasn't started since Tuesday and hasn't appeared off the bench since Wednesday, though his .194/.208/.376 season slash line means there's no guarantee he'd be playing even if healthy. He'll be evaluated when the team gets back to Chicago on Monday, which means it's unlikely he appears in Sunday's series finale against Seattle.
Jun 14 2023Gonzalez logged a stolen base and a run scored as a pinch runner in Wednesday's 8-4 win over the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez ran for Eloy Jimenez in the ninth inning as the White Sox rallied for a three-run frame. Over nine contests in June, Gonzalez has gone 3-for-22 with four steals, two RBI and three runs scored. His cold bat could lead to more opportunities for Elvis Andrus at second base. For the season, Gonzalez owns a .194/.208/.376 slash line with seven steals, three home runs, 14 RBI and 11 runs scored over 97 plate appearances.
Jun 12 2023Gonzalez went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI on Sunday against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez was back in the lineup after a two-game absence, with Elvis Andrus starting in his place. He delivered a two-RBI double in the sixth inning, only his third hit across 19 at-bats through seven games in June. Gonzalez may find it difficult to earn playing time moving forward so long as Andrus, Tim Anderson and Yoan Moncada remain healthy.
Jun 10 2023Gonzalez will be on the bench Saturday against Miami. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez had been settling in as the White Sox's primary second baseman, starting 14 of 16 games at the keystone even with Elvis Andrus back from his oblique injury for the last six games of that stretch. Gonzalez has hit just .198/.213/.384 though 39 games this season, however, so it's perhaps no surprise that he's been back on the bench for the last two games. That said, Andrus is hitting just .200/.278/.248 himself, so he hasn't deserved everyday at-bats either.
Jun 8 2023Gonzalez went 0-for-3 with a walk and two stolen bases in the opening game of Thursday's doubleheader versus the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It wasn't a successful day at the plate for Gonzalez, who also went 0-for-3 in the nightcap to finish at 0-for-6 overall. However, he redeemed himself from a fantasy perspective with two thefts in the opener to bring his total to six on the season. Four of the steals have come since May 30, a stretch during which he has started seven of Chicago's eight games.
May 30 2023Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with a solo homer, one double, an additional RBI, an additional run scored and one steal in Tuesday's 7-3 victory over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales continued his tear at the plate, swatting his third home run in as many games while also swiping his third bag of the season. Since being activated from the IL on May 13, Gonzales owns a .323 average with three homers, 11 RBI and six runs scored. Though his recent play has been quite encouraging, Gonzales will likely return to a backup role upon the return of Elvis Andrus (oblique), which is expected to come later this week.
May 28 2023Gonzalez will start at second base and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez will man the keystone for the sixth time in seven games and may have emerged as the primary replacement at the position while Elvis Andrus (oblique) is on the shelf. Hanser Alberto had missed a good chunk of those games while missing a shoulder injury of his own, but since he returned to action Friday, he didn't play second base Saturday and won't on Sunday either. After sitting out Saturday's game entirely, Alberto will be filling in for a resting Yoan Moncada at third base in the series finale.
May 24 2023Gonzalez went 1-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored Wednesday against the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez has started each of the White Sox's last four games with Hanser Alberto (shoulder) sidelined and Elvis Andrus (oblique) on the injured list. He's collected five hits across 15 at-bats in that span, tallying six RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. For the season, Gonzalez is still hitting just .200, and he's almost certain to lose playing time when either Alberto or Andrus can return.
May 21 2023Gonzalez went 3-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, one run scored and one steal in Sunday's 5-2 victory over the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez drew the start at shortstop for the White Sox on Sunday and collected a trio of hits. His performance was highlighted by a two-RBI triple in the fifth inning off Max Castillo that plated Gavin Sheets and Clint Frazier to give Chicago the lead. Sunday's outing was Gonzalez's first multi-hit performance in 2023, while his stolen base was his first since April 9. Though Gonzalez may have earned himself some more opportunities moving forward after Sunday's contest, he shouldn't be considered in most formats given his .195/.190/.293 slash line this season.
May 13 2023Gonzalez (shoulder) was activated from the 10-day injured list Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Elvis Andrus was placed on the IL with an oblique strain, so there could be at-bats available at the keystone over the next couple weeks. However, Hanser Alberto is starting over Gonzalez on Saturday.
May 2 2023Gonzalez was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, retroactive to May 1, with right shoulder inflammation. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez will miss at least the next nine days while recovering from what sounds like a minor shoulder issue. The 26-year-old utilityman had gone just 5-for-36 (.139) with a .333 OPS through 21 games this season with Chicago.
Mar 31 2023Gonzalez went 1-for-2 Thursday against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez started in right field and hit ninth, earning playing time over Oscar Colas. That's likely only because lefty Framber Valdez was on the mound for Houston, though the right field job in Chicago will be worth monitoring early in the season. Gonzalez earned 109 plate appearances in the majors in 2022 and posted a .238/.257/.352 line.
Mar 29 2023Gonzalez could start in right field for the White Sox in Thursday's opener versus the Astros, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Oscar Colas is in line for the bulk of the playing time in right field, but with the Astros starting southpaw Framber Valdez, the left-handed hitting Colas might start on the bench in favor of Gonzalez, with Eloy Jimenez handling the designated hitter spot. Gonzalez clubbed five homers this spring, and while it's a small sample, he sports an .874 OPS versus lefties in the big leagues.
Mar 25 2023Gonzalez could lose out on a roster spot to begin the season in favor of Leury Garcia, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez has had an inconsistent spring, leaving his status for Opening Day in flux. On one hand, he's slugged four home runs and added a double across 40 Cactus League at-bats. However, Gonzalez has also struck out 15 times in 43 total plate appearances. While Gonzalez's defensive versatility has been praised by the club, Garcia is also capable of playing many positions, either in the infield or outfield.
Mar 1 2023General manager Rick Hahn praised Gonzalez's defensive versatility when speaking to the media at the beginning of spring training, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For much of the offseason, Gonzalez was projected to start at second base for the White Sox. That changed when the team signed Elvis Andrus on Feb. 19, but Gonzalez could still make the big-league club out of spring training as a utility option. He's played every defensive position for the organization except first base, catcher and center field, which caused Hahn to draw a comparison between Gonzalez and Ben Zobrist.
Oct 3 2022Gonzalez isn't starting Monday against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez is sitting for the third time in the last four games after he went 0-for-2 with a strikeout Sunday against the Padres. Josh Harrison will start at the keystone and bat seventh.
Oct 1 2022Gonzalez isn't in the lineup Saturday against San Diego. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez is on the bench for a second consecutive matchup after he went 2-for-7 with a triple, a run, an RBI and four strikeouts over his last two games. Josh Harrison will take over at the keystone and bat ninth once again.
Sep 30 2022Gonzalez isn't starting Friday against the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez started the last two games and went 2-for-7 with a triple, a run, an RBI and four strikeouts. He'll get a breather while Josh Harrison starts at the keystone and bats ninth.
Sep 27 2022Gonzalez is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Twins, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez is hitting just .071 with 13 strikeouts and zero walks in his last 10 games. Josh Harrison is starting at the keystone, hitting ninth.
Sep 24 2022Gonzalez will sit for the second straight game Saturday against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez has been the White Sox's primary second baseman since late August, but his playing time may be slipping. Going 2-for-25 with 11 strikeouts over his last nine games presumably isn't helping his case for starts. Josh Harrison will handle the keystone Saturday.
Sep 23 2022Gonzalez isn't starting Friday against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez is getting a day off after he went 1-for-6 with a strikeout over the last two games. Josh Harrison will take over at the keystone and bat eighth Friday.
Sep 16 2022Gonzalez isn't starting Friday against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez has gone 1-for-10 with a double and five strikeouts over his last three games and will retreat to the bench for a second consecutive matchup. Josh Harrison is starting at the keystone and batting ninth.
Sep 15 2022Gonzalez is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez is hitting an even .300 on the season, but he went just 2-for-14 (.143) over his last four games, so acting manager Miguel Cairo decided to give him a mental break. Josh Harrison will man the keystone Thursday in Gonzalez's place.
Sep 10 2022Gonzalez isn't in the lineup Saturday against Oakland, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez is getting a breather after he went 5-for-9 with a home run, a double, four runs, four RBI and four strikeouts over the last two games. Josh Harrison will start at the keystone and bat ninth.
Sep 9 2022Gonzalez went 4-for-5 with a home run, a double, three runs scored and three RBI in a 14-2 win Thursday in Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez singled and scored in the second, doubled and scored in the fifth and smashed a three-run homer in the sixth. It was his first four-hit game of his career and his second game with at least three hits in his last five starts. After struggling with a .198/.282/.339 slash line in 33 games for Triple-A Charlotte before his promotion, the 25-year-old has attacked big-league pitching, posting a .339/.356/.500 line in 15 contests. He's started 11 of Chicago's last 12 games and should continue to see regular playing time over the next couple of weeks.
Sep 7 2022Gonzalez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game in Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez went 9-for-26 (.346 average) with a home run and four RBI while starting in each of the White Sox's last seven games, but an 0:8 BB:K over that stretch suggests he wasn't completely dialed in at the plate. He'll take a seat for the series finale in Seattle, and Gonzalez could be in danger of moving into more of a part-time role now that Yoan Moncada is back from the injured list. With Moncada taking over as Chicago's primary third baseman, Gonzalez now has to contend with Elvis Andrus, Josh Harrison and Leury Garcia for one of the two everyday roles in the middle infield.
Sep 3 2022Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with a three-run home run and an additional run scored in Saturday's 13-0 win over the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez went deep in the fourth inning to stretch Chicago's lead to 7-0. It was his first big-league homer in his 21st game, and he also doubled his RBI output for the year to six. The 25-year-old infielder has added a .317/.341/.439 slash line through 11 contests this season, but he could be at risk of losing playing time once Yoan Moncada (hamstring) returns, which is likely to happen early next week.
Aug 30 2022Gonzalez is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez served as the White Sox's starting second baseman and leadoff man in each of the past three contests, going 2-for-12 with a double, a walk, a run and an RBI. Though normal table setter Luis Robert (wrist) remains out of the lineup, AJ Pollock will get a spin as the White Sox's leadoff man Tuesday, while Leury Garcia replaces Gonzalez in the infield.
Aug 28 2022Gonzalez will start at second base and bat leadoff in Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With usual leadoff man Luis Robert (wrist) sidelined for the entire series against the Diamondbacks and with the White Sox having an opening in the infield following Yoan Moncada's (hamstring) recent move to the injured list, Gonzalez will make a third straight turn out of the table-setting spot. He was able to capitalize on the opportunity in Saturday's 10-5 loss, going 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run. With Josh Harrison set to serve as Moncada's primary replacement, Gonzalez could end up settling in as the White Sox's main option at second base. Gonzalez's main challenger for playing time, Leury Garcia, returned from an IL stint of his own Saturday and is slashing a lowly .209/.234/.271 in 292 plate appearances on the season.
Aug 17 2022The White Sox recalled Gonzalez from Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday. He'll start at shortstop and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez played in 10 games for the White Sox in 2021, but has spent the majority of the 2022 season in Charlotte. He's hit just .198 with four homers, 15 runs, 10 RBI and five stolen bases over 33 Triple-A games, but that won't stop the White Sox from calling him up after Leury Garcia (back) joined Tim Anderson (hand) on the 10-day injured list. Lenyn Sosa should get the first chance to serve as Chicago's primary shortstop, though Gonzalez will draw the start at the position Wednesday.
Apr 4 2022The White Sox optioned Gonzalez to Triple-A Charlotte on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez's demotion likely paves the way for Danny Mendick to break camp with the White Sox as a utility infielder. The 25-year-old Gonzalez should play on an everyday basis at Charlotte, but after producing a 1.121 OPS in his 15 games with the affiliate in 2021, he may have little left to prove in the minors at this stage.
Sep 21 2021Gonzalez was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez was called up when rosters expanded at the start of September. He got into 10 games, hitting an unremarkable .250/.273/.344 in 33 trips to the plate. He'll return to the minors to make room for Adam Engel (shoulder), who was activated off the injured list.
Sep 20 2021Gonzalez is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez will take a seat after he went 5-for-16 with two doubles, a walk, three runs and an RBI while starting in each of the White Sox's last four games. The 25-year-old doesn't have a clear path to an everyday role at the moment, but his ability to play multiple infield and outfield spots should allow him to see at least semi-regular work while he wields a hot bat.
Sep 17 2021Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, one RBI and a walk in Friday's 8-0 win over Texas. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez doubled in a run in the second inning and scored a run in both the fourth and seventh frames. It was the first multi-hit game in his young career and he's now 7-for-24 (.292) with three doubles through his first eight games. The University of Miami product registered a .275/.357/.525 slash line with 23 homers and 22 steals across 87 games with Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Charlotte this season.
Sep 5 2021Gonzalez started at third base, batted leadoff and went 0-for-5 with an RBI in Saturday's 10-7 win over the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzalez, who was promoted from Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday, filled in for an ailing Yoan Moncada, who is battling a wrist issue. The injury tends to get aggravated when swinging from the right side, so Moncada was held out against left-hander Daniel Lynch. It was the first MLB start for Gonzalez, who made his debut as a pinch hitter Friday.
Sep 1 2021The White Sox officially selected Gonzalez's contract from Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With top second baseman Cesar Hernandez having endured a brutal September and with Tim Anderson (hamstring) landing on the injured list Wednesday, Gonzalez could be in the mix for playing time in the middle infield following his first big-league call-up. Leury Garcia and Danny Mendick loom as his primary threats for reps, but Gonzalez's status as one of the organization's top prospects behooves the White Sox to at least give him a look as a part-time player while Anderson is on the shelf. After delivering modest production in his first two seasons of professional ball, Gonzalez turned heads between stops at Charlotte and Double-A Birmingham this season. In 378 plate appearances, the 24-year-old slashed a collective .275/.357/.525 with 23 home runs and 22 steals in 28 attempts.
