Jun 11 2025Detmers earned the save in Wednesday's 6-5 win over the A's, striking out two in a perfect ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Kenley Jansen unavailable, Detmers was tasked with protecting a one-run lead against the top of the A's batting order in the ninth. The left-hander was up to the task, retiring the side on just 10 pitches while striking out a pair. Detmers has impressed in a high-leverage role recently -- he's now held opponents scoreless in 11 straight innings, allowing just six hits while striking out 18 in that span. Detmers has two saves on the season while lowering his ERA to 5.22 with a 1.53 WHIP and 37:13 K:BB across 29.1 innings.
Jun 8 2025Detmers earned a hold against Seattle on Saturday, allowing one hit and striking out two batters over one scoreless inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers handled the seventh frame with the Angels up by two runs. The left-hander began the campaign working in a lower-leverage role and had a 10.05 ERA with no holds or saves through his first 12 appearances, but since then he's turned things around, surrendering just one run over his last 12 outings covering 13 innings while posting a 19:7 K:BB. He's become one of the Angels' top high-leverage options, picking up six holds and one save across his past nine appearances.
Jun 4 2025Detmers struck out two in a perfect 10th inning Tuesday to record his first career save in a 4-3 win over the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kenley Jansen handled the ninth inning to keep the game tied at 3-3, and when the Angels pushed a run across in the top of the 10th, manager Ron Washington brought in Detmers to face Boston's 5-6-7 hitters. The southpaw was up to the task, fanning Carlos Narvaez and Trevor Story while firing nine of 11 pitches for strikes. Detmers is emerging as a high-leverage weapon for the Halos in his first season working out of the bullpen, and over his last 10 appearances he's produced a 0.82 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 15:6 K:BB in 11 innings while racking up one win, one save and four holds.
May 18 2025Detmers (1-2) earned the win over the Dodgers on Saturday, allowing one run on three hits and two walks while striking out two batters over two innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers entered in the sixth frame with runners on second and third and no outs after Hector Neris allowed all three batters he faced to reach base. Though he yielded an infield single and a walk, Detmers did a good job limiting the damage, allowing just one of the inherited runners to cross the plate while inducing a key double play groundout off the bat of Shohei Ohtani. Detmers continued into the seventh and gave up a run of his own, but he still received credit for the win on a day when he was the most effective Angels reliever aside from closer Kenley Jansen. Detmers recently went through an awful stretch during which he allowed 12 earned runs while retiring just one batter over a three-outing span, but the lefty has been better since then, yielding just one run while posting a 5:3 K:BB across four innings over his past three appearances.
May 1 2025Detmers (0-1) gave up five runs on five hits without recording an out in relief to take the loss Wednesday against the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers entered in the seventh inning with the scored tied 2-2. The lefty was initially unlucky as the first two batters he faced reach on an infield single and a bunt single, respectively, but Detmers then gave up three more consecutive knocks -- including a Julio Rodriguez double -- and was pulled having failed to record an out. In total, five runs were charged to Detmers' line, pushing his season ERA all the way up to 5.79. The first-round pick of the 2020 First-Year Player Draft is transitioning to a relief role this season and had been pitching well prior to getting blown up Wednesday, as he entered the contest against Seattle with a 2.57 ERA and 14:5 K:BB over 14 innings.
Mar 24 2025Angels manager Ron Washington said Monday that Detmers will open the 2025 season in the bullpen, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers had been competing against Jack Kochanowicz for the final spot in the Angels' rotation. With Kochanowicz winning the job, Detmers will work out of the Halos' bullpen and could be used as a long reliever, per Jack Janes of The Sporting Tribune. Detmers worked in relief in each of his last three spring outings and allowed four runs (three earned) on 11 hits and two walks while striking out 13 across 11.2 frames.
Mar 16 2025Detmers pitched four innings in a Cactus League contest against the Padres on Sunday, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and no walks while striking out four batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kyle Hendricks began the game with five frames for the Angels, and Detmers followed by pitching the remaining four innings. Detmers did well despite giving up two runs, as he didn't issue any free passes and fanned four batters. The lefty is locked into a competition with Jack Kochanowicz for the final spot in the Angels' rotation, and both pitchers have made a strong case this spring -- Detmers has posted a 2.30 ERA and 12:2 K:BB over 13.2 innings while Kochanowicz has a 2.92 ERA and 7:4 K:BB across 12.1 frames. Jack Janes of The Sporting Tribune reports that the Angels are considering using whichever of the two pitchers doesn't get the rotation spot as a long reliever, though it's not clear if the team is leaning toward Detmers to come out of the bullpen since he's worked in relief in three out of his five Cactus League appearances while Kochanowicz has started in all four of his outings.
Mar 10 2025Detmers entered in the sixth inning of Monday's Cactus League contest against Colorado and tossed four scoreless frames, allowing four hits and striking out four batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers has been battling Jack Kochanowicz for the Angels' fifth-starter role this spring, but it's unclear if Detmers' appearance in relief Monday -- the first time he has come out of the bullpen this spring -- in an indication that Kochanowicz has won the job. Regardless, Detmers made a strong case to be on the Opening Day pitching staff in some capacity with his performance against the Reds, during which he limited Cincinnati to four harmless hits -- all singles -- across four innings. The left-hander lowered his spring ERA to 2.31 with the outing, and he now has an 8:2 K:BB over 11.2 frames, though Kochanowicz has arguably been better with a 1.00 ERA and 6:1 K:BB over nine innings.
Mar 5 2025Detmers tossed 2.2 innings in a Cactus League contest against the Dodgers on Wednesday, allowing one run on two hits and no walks while striking out one batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers set the side down in order in the first inning, then allowed a run on a double, single and groundout in the second. He retired the only two batters he faced in the third before his day came to an end. Detmers and Jack Kochanowicz are battling for the Angels' fifth-starter role to begin the campaign, and both have been effective in exhibition play thus far. Detmers has a 3.52 ERA and 4:2 K:BB over 7.2 frames across three outings, while Kochanowicz has a 1.80 ERA and 4:1 K:BB over five innings covering two appearances.
Mar 1 2025Detmers pitched three scoreless innings in a Cactus League contest against the White Sox on Friday, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out two batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers' second spring outing got off to a shaky start, as he allowed two of the first four White Sox batters to reach base. However, the southpaw rebounded thereafter, retiring seven of the final eight hitters he faced. It was a promising performance by Detmers as he seeks to win the Angels' No. 5 starter job. Jack Kochanowicz, who was scratched from his scheduled start Thursday due to an illness, is likely Detmers' top competition for the role.
Feb 2 2025Detmers is one of several pitchers who will likely be competing for the Angels' fifth-starter role during spring training, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers began 2024 in the Angels' rotation and was sizzling out of the gates with a 3-0 record, 1.19 ERA and 30:7 K:BB over 22.2 innings across his first four starts. The southpaw faded dramatically from there, however, finishing the campaign with an ugly 6.70 ERA and 1.56 WHIP over 87.1 frames while spending much of the season in the minors. There's little doubt that Detmers has impressive stuff -- among other things, he has a no-hitter to his name and a career 25 percent strikeout rate -- but he's yet to put it all together to cement himself as a consistent big-league pitcher. Detmers will have every chance during spring training to show that he belongs in Los Angeles' rotation, but Bollinger considers Jack Kochanowicz the early favorite to secure the team's fifth-starter spot to open the campaign.
Jan 9 2025Detmers agreed to a one-year, $1.825 million contract with the Angels on Thursday, avoiding arbitration, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander spent much of 2024 in the minors and finished with a 6.70 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 109:38 K:BB in 17 starts with the Angels. Detmers may need a strong showing during spring training in order to break camp with the big-league club in 2025.
Sep 28 2024Detmers (4-9) took the loss Friday, giving up four runs on eight hits -- including three home runs -- and a walk over five innings as the Angels fell 5-2 to the Rangers. He struck out 12. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw displayed both the good and bad sides of his profile, generating 32 called or swinging strikes among his 95 pitches but serving up back-to-back homers to Wyatt Langford and Adolis Garcia in the first inning, before Carson Kelly tagged him for another long ball in the fourth. Over five September starts, Detmers posted a brutal 8.14 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 3.0 HR/9 despite a superficially impressive 39:11 K:BB through 24.1 innings. The 25-year-old still has four years of team control and is only heading into his first year of arbitration eligibility this winter, however, so it's unlikely the Angels will give up on his upside quite yet.
Sep 21 2024Detmers (4-8) took the loss against Houston on Saturday, allowing seven runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out three batters over two-plus innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers gave up a run in the first frame and two more in the second, and things got really out of hand for him in the third. He allowed all four batters he faced in that inning to reach base -- on a home run, two doubles and a single -- and was charged with four runs. It was another implosion for Detmers, who gave up seven runs over 5.1 frames against the White Sox in his previous start. The pair of awful outings come after he appeared to turn a corner upon his return from the minors Sept. 3 -- in his first two starts following the promotion, he yielded just four runs while notching an 18:4 K:BB across 12 innings.
Sep 16 2024Detmers (4-7) allowed seven runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out six over 5.1 innings to take the loss Monday versus the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Andrew Benintendi and Andrew Vaughn went back-to-back in the first inning, and Detmers continued to struggle after that. The White Sox got to him for three runs in the second and light-hitting Lenyn Sosa added a solo shot in the third. Given the quality of the opponent, this was a large step back for Detmers, who had posted quality starts in his first two outings back in the majors. He's at a 6.05 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 94:34 K:BB through 80.1 innings over 15 starts. With Caden Dana sent down Monday, the Angels are likely to go with a five-man rotation over the final two weeks of the season. Detmers' next outing is projected to be in Houston.
Sep 9 2024Detmers (4-6) earned the win over Minnesota on Monday, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out eight batters over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers racked up 14 whiffs in the outing after notching 18 in his previous start last Tuesday against the Dodgers. The left-hander has notched a quality start in each of his two appearances since returning from the minors, recording a total of 18 strikeouts while giving up just four runs over 12 frames during that span. Detmers has shown stretches of dominance before -- he opened this season with a 1.19 ERA and 30:7 K:BB over his first four starts, for example -- but has also had frustrating bouts of ineffectiveness. He'll likely remain in the Angels' rotation for the remainder of the campaign and look to finish strong in hopes of building momentum toward what will likely be a rotation spot to open the 2025 season.
Sep 8 2024Detmers is scheduled to start Monday's game against the Twins in Minnesota. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers will draw a second straight start in the Angels' six-man rotation after he impressed in his return to the big leagues this past Tuesday against the Dodgers. While making his first start for the Halos since June 1, Detmers limited a tough Los Angeles lineup to two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out 10 batters over six innings.
Sep 3 2024Detmers allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out 10 over six innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers had allowed at least three runs in eight straight outings before being sent to Triple-A Salt Lake at the beginning of June. He was able to post a quality start in his return, throwing 68 of 100 pitches for strikes. That poor stretch earlier in the year will be tough to overcome in the season-long numbers, which have Detmers at a 5.87 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 80:29 K:BB through 69 innings over 13 starts. He's expected to remain in the rotation moving forward as the Angels roll with six starts, which puts him in line to make his next start at Minnesota.
Sep 1 2024The Angels recalled Detmers from Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday. He's scheduled to start the Angels' series opener versus the Dodgers in Anaheim on Tuesday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander will be back with the Angels for the first time since early June after he was banished to the minors following a string of poor starts. He had largely struggled to the right the ship over his first two months at Salt Lake, but Detmers settled into a groove over his final three starts with the Triple-A club (1.29 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 29:7 K:BB in 21 innings) to earn another chance with the Angels. With the Angels recently adding rookies Jack Kochanowicz, Caden Dana and Samuel Aldegheri to a rotation that already included Tyler Anderson and Griffin Canning, the promotion of Detmers now gives the club six starters. The Angels could keep a six-man rotation in place over the final four weeks of the season to help limit the innings of the young starters while also affording them an additional day of rest between starts.
Aug 31 2024Detmers is expected to be added to the Angels' roster and will start Tuesday against the Dodgers, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: MLB rosters will expand to 28 players Sunday, and the Angels will add Detmers to seemingly create a six-man rotation for the tail end of the regular season, per Fletcher. Detmers was sent down to Triple-A Salt Lake on June 1 after giving up four earned runs or more in seven of his eight prior major-league starts. He has a 5.54 ERA and 1.40 WHIP across 78 innings with Salt Lake this season, but he has been better over his last three starts with a 1.29 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 29:7 K:BB across 21 frames.
Jul 1 2024Detmers tossed six innings for Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday, allowing three runs on four hits and no walks while striking out 11 batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers was optioned to Triple-A on June 1 after a series of poor starts with the Angels. His first minor-league outing since 2022 didn't go well, as he gave up seven runs over five frames in a June 7 start versus Sugar Land. The southpaw has improved since, and over his past two outings with Salt Lake he's struck out 21 hitters across 12 frames, though he's also surrendered eight earned runs over that stretch. Overall, Detmers has logged a 5.70 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 41:9 K:BB across 30 frames through five starts in the minors. Angels pitching coach Barry Enright said last week that Detmers was "trending in the right direction" in terms of improvement when addressing how the club will fill the rotation spot of Patrick Sandoval, who has since been ruled out for the season after undergoing an internal brace procedure to repair the UCL in his pitching elbow. That said, it's unclear what the team's plans are for Detmers moving forward. The Angels rotation has had a lot of moving parts of late -- in addition to Sandoval's injury, Zach Plesac was demoted to Triple-A on Saturday, Jose Soriano (abdomen) is slated to return from the injured list Tuesday, and Davis Daniel was promoted from the minors to make his first start of the season last Thursday. In addition, Roansy Contreras was moved from the bullpen to make a spot start last Wednesday and is slated to get another turn in the rotation this coming Thursday versus Oakland.
Jun 1 2024Detmers (3-6) took the loss Saturday against the Mariners, allowing five runs on four hits and four walks with three K's in 3.2 innings. He was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake after the start. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers started the season as one of the Angels' top starters and garnered wins in each of his first three starts, striking out 26 batters with two runs allowed across 17.1 innings. However, he hasn't gotten in the win column since and has yielded at least three runs in eight straight starts. Outside of a decent 8.9 K/9 across 40.1 innings, nothing has been working for Detmers lately, allowing 10 long balls and 20 walks over that stretch. The 24-year-old was a reliable arm for Los Angeles the past two seasons and it's possible that a Triple-A stint will help the southpaw regain some confidence and find his previous form. For now, Detmers will give up his spot in the rotation and on the 26-man roster. A corresponding move has yet to be announced.
May 27 2024Detmers (3-5) yielded three runs on four hits and four walks over five-plus innings Sunday, striking out eight and taking a loss against the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers gave up just two runs through five frames before he was charged with one more during Cleveland's three-run sixth inning. He generated 16 whiffs and has forced double-digit swinging strikes in eight of his 11 outings. Detmers started the year 3-0 with a 1.19 ERA through four starts; since then, he's gone 0-5 with an 8.59 ERA and has now failed to complete at least six innings in six consecutive appearances. Now carrying a 5.76 ERA, Detemers will look to snap the skid in his next start, which is projected to be in Seattle.
May 20 2024Detmers allowed six runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out three over four innings in a no-decision versus the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers' run of poor pitching continued. Five of the six runs came on home runs by Jose Altuve and Mauricio Dubon. Detmers has allowed at least four runs in each of his last six starts, and this was the fourth time in that span he's surrendered multiple homers. The southpaw has an ugly 5.80 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 59:19 K:BB through 54.1 innings across 10 starts this season. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Guardians.
May 14 2024Detmers allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out seven over five innings in a no-decision versus the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While he avoided a fifth straight loss, it was still a poor showing for Detmers. He's given up at least four earned runs in each of his last five outings while walking multiple batters in four of them. He kept the ball in the yard Tuesday, which was a positive, but it's not as encouraging as it could be since the Cardinals have been bereft of power this year. Detmers is at a 5.19 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 56:18 K:BB over 50.1 innings across nine starts in 2024. He's projected to make his next start on the road in Houston.
May 10 2024Detmers (3-4) was hit with the loss against the Royals on Thursday, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers cruised through the first two innings before the first four batters got on base to open the third, eventually leading to four runs. He was touched up again in the fifth, marking his third consecutive outing in which he's allowed at least five runs. Surprisingly, the lefty has still managed to get through at least five innings in all eight of his starts this season despite his recent struggles, though he's lost four straight outings.
May 4 2024Detmers (3-3) took the loss against Cleveland on Saturday, allowing seven runs on five hits and four walks while striking out seven batters over 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers entered the sixth inning with a quality start still in sight, as he had allowed three runs to that point. However, the left-hander got himself into trouble by walking three batters in the frame, and Bo Naylor made the hurler pay with a grand slam to blow the game open. The seven runs, three homers and four free passes were all season-worst marks for Detmers, who was tagged with his third consecutive loss. The 24-year-old looked to be on his way to a breakout campaign by posting a 1.19 ERA and 30:7 K:BB over 22.2 innings across his first four starts, but he's stumbled since, allowing 16 earned runs and recording a 14:7 K:BB over 17.2 frames in his past three outings.
Apr 28 2024Detmers (3-2) yielded five runs on nine hits over five innings Sunday, striking out three and taking a loss against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers fired three perfect innings before the Twins broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning. He ran into more trouble in the fifth, coughing up four runs on five hits. After an incredible start to his season in which he produced a 30:7 K:BB and 1.19 ERA through four starts, Detmers has taken two straight losses, yielding nine runs in 12 innings. His ERA climbed to 3.12, but he still owns a strong 37:10 K:BB through 34.2 frames. Detmers is projected for a road start in Cleveland next weekend.
Apr 22 2024Detmers (3-1) took the loss against Baltimore on Monday, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four batters over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers surrendered four extra-base hits, including two homers, among the six knocks the Orioles managed against him, and he tied his season low with a modest four punchouts. Still, the southpaw registered his longest start of the campaign with seven frames to help the Angels stay close, but the team couldn't complete a ninth-inning rally that could have taken him off the hook for his first loss. Despite the defeat, Detmers has had an overall strong start to the campaign, posting a 2.12 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 34:10 K:BB through 29.2 innings.
Apr 17 2024Detmers didn't factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits and one walk over 5.1 innings against the Rays. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Although Detmers didn't reach seven strikeouts for the first time all season, he surrendered one earned run of fewer for a fourth straight outing. After seeing his K/9 jump up to 10.2 in 2023, Detmers has taken another step forward in the category with an 11.9 K/9 through 22.2 innings. The southpaw is tentatively scheduled to face the Orioles on Monday for his next start.
Apr 12 2024Detmers (3-0) earned the win Friday over the Red Sox, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out seven over 6.1 scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was another excellent outing from Detmers, who's held opponents to one run or fewer while striking out at least seven in each of his first three starts. The 24-year-old southpaw lowered his ERA to a stellar 1.04 with a 0.81 WHIP and 26 strikeouts, tied for second-most in the majors, through 17.1 innings. Detmers looks poised to take a significant step forward after posting a mediocre 4.48 ERA in 28 starts last season. He's currently in line to face the Rays on the road in his next outing.
Apr 6 2024Detmers (2-0) earned the win over Boston on Saturday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out 12 batters over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers induced a whopping 21 whiffs in the outing and tied a career high with 12 punchouts. The left-hander looked even better than he did in his first start of the season, when he picked up a win with five innings of one-run ball against Baltimore. Detmers has shown flashes of excellence in the majors in the past -- most impressively, he pitched a no-hitter against Tampa Bay in 2022 -- but he had a disappointing season last year, posting a 4.48 ERA and 1.35 WHIP over 28 starts. However, he could be primed for a breakout campaign based on his first two starts of 2024 -- so far, he's allowed just two runs over 11 innings while racking up an impressive 19:4 K:BB.
Mar 31 2024Detmers (1-0) earned the win Sunday, allowing one run, two hits and three walks over five innings against the Orioles. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After the Orioles bludgeoned the Angels pitching staff for 24 runs over the first two games, Detmers stopped the bleeding with his first win of the season in a brilliant outing. He relied heavily on his fastball, throwing it 60.2 percent of the time and generating 12 whiffs against the vaunted Orioles lineup. Detmers managed to generate 24 strikeouts over 18.1 innings in spring training, so it's possible the former 10th overall pick is finding a new level. He is scheduled to face another AL East foe, the Red Sox, at home for his next start.
Mar 4 2024Detmers pitched 1.2 innings in a Cactus League start against San Diego on Friday, allowing two runs on two hits and four walks while striking out two batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Spring training is generally a time to shake off rust, so Detmers' struggles shouldn't be read into too deeply. Still, it wasn't a promising performance from a hurler who is trying to bounce back from a disappointing 2023 campaign. Detmers' 9.3 percent walk rate last season was in the 35th percentile leaguewide, and improving upon that number could be key in allowing him to reach the potential the Angels assessed when selecting him 10th overall in the 2020 First-Year Player Draft. His next opportunity to pitch this spring will likely come Wednesday.
Oct 1 2023Detmers is not listed as Sunday's starter against the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Angels will give Carson Fulmer the ball Sunday, and given that Detmers hasn't followed an opener all season, it would seem that he is done for the year. The 24-year-old southpaw logged a 4.48 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 168 strikeouts and four wins over 148.2 innings.
Sep 26 2023Detmers (4-10) allowed a run on four hits and four walks while striking out seven over seven innings to earn the win over the Rangers on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers ended a five-start winless skid with a solid outing, though the four walks matched his season high. This was the fifth time he'd gone seven frames in an appearance this season, and it was only the second time he's won such a start. For the year, the southpaw is at a 4.48 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 168:60 K:BB through 148.2 innings over 28 starts. Detmers could get one more start at home versus the Athletics on normal rest, but it's unclear if the Angels will want to roll him out there when they have nothing to play for.
Sep 20 2023Detmers allowed an unearned run on three hits and two walks while striking out seven batters over four innings in a no-decision against Tampa Bay on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers was scratched from his previous projected start Sunday due to an illness, but he recovered enough to take the mound Wednesday. The southpaw's short outing didn't appear to be due to any lingering effects, nor did he pitch poorly -- the only run Detmers allowed was largely due to an error behind him in the third frame. However, the hurler needed 96 pitches to complete his four innings, as the Rays fouled off a hefty 27 balls against him. That prevented Detmers from qualifying for the win, though he still made a strong impact in fantasy with his second straight seven-strikeout performance.
Sep 17 2023Detmers was scratched from Sunday's start against the Tigers due to an illness, Sam Blum of The Athleticreports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers has a 3.00 ERA across his past five starts but won't pitch as scheduled Sunday due to the ailment. Depending on the severity of the illness, the left-hander could be available to pitch during the upcoming three-game series in Tampa Bay, which begins Tuesday. Jimmy Herget will now open Sunday's contest with Kenny Rosenberg following as the primary pitcher.
Sep 11 2023Detmers allowed three runs on five hits and struck out seven without walking a batter over seven innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers picked up his second quality start in a row, though he's gone four starts without a win. This was the first time he's issued no walks this season. The southpaw gave up all three runs in the first inning. He's now at a 4.77 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 154:54 K:BB through 137.2 innings over a career-high 26 starts. Detmers is projected for a road start at Tampa Bay next week.
Sep 6 2023Detmers did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing two runs on nine hits and one walk over 6.2 innings against the Orioles. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All of the damage against Detmers came in the third, when he gave up singles to Jorge Mateo, Adley Rutschman and Ryan Mountcastle as part of a two-run inning. However, he was able to pick up a quality start -- his second in his last 10 appearances -- and walked only one batter for the first time since mid-July. The southpaw has quietly strung together a handful of impressive starts, owning a 3.13 ERA across his last 23 innings (four starts). He's slated for a trip to Seattle to take on the Mariners in his next appearance.
Aug 31 2023Detmers did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks over four innings against the Phillies. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers struggled with his command from the start, beaning a batter in each of the first two innings before allowing two runs to come across for Philadelphia. The lefty needed 33 pitches to get through the second frame and failed to make it through five innings for the third time in his last six starts. He's also issued three or more walks in three of his last four outings and has given up at least two free passes in eight straight, going 1-4 over that stretch.
Aug 23 2023Detmers (3-10) allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three over five innings, taking the loss in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers couldn't carry over any momentum from his dominant outing versus the Rangers last week. He instead gave up four runs -- he's allowed at least that many in five of his last eight starts. The southpaw now has a 5.03 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 139:50 K:BB through 120 innings across 23 starts this season. Detmers is projected for a road start in Philadelphia next week.
Aug 16 2023Detmers (3-9) earned the win over Texas on Wednesday, allowing one hit and four walks while striking out five batters over 7.1 scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers came into the contest having allowed 14 earned runs over his previous two outings covering just 6.1 frames, so it made perfect sense that he shut down one of the league's top-scoring offenses in a dominant effort Wednesday. The left-handed hurler made a push for his second career no-hitter, holding the Rangers without a base knock until Marcus Semien got to him for a one-out double in the eighth inning. That was the last batter Detmers faced, and the Angels' bullpen completed the shutout to give the 24-year-old his first win since July 2. This type of outing is a good reminder of Detmers' potential, though he's been frustratingly up-and-down this season and has pitched to a mediocre 4.93 ERA and 1.37 WHIP despite a career-best 10.6 K/9.
Aug 11 2023Detmers (2-9) took the loss Friday, allowing seven runs on seven hits and three walks over 2.1 innings against Houston. He struck out zero. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Astros' Jon Singleton had not hit a big-league home run since 2015 but knocked out two against Detmers, who was pulled following Singleton's third-inning blast. A rough July has turned into a full-on disastrous August for Detmers who has now allowed 14 earned runs in 6.1 August innings. This also marks the first career appearance in which he failed to record a strikeout. Unless the Angels decide to go in a different direction, Detmers will next attempt to right the ship in a mid-week matchup against Texas in Arlington.
Aug 4 2023Detmers allowed seven runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out four over four innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers has gone five straight outings without a win, and he's failed to complete five innings in three of those appearances. The southpaw was tagged for a trio of home runs Friday, which accounted for six of the seven runs against him. Detmers is at a 4.78 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 131:41 K:BB through 105.1 innings over 20 starts this season. He's projected for a tough road start in Houston next week.
Jul 30 2023Detmers (2-8) took the loss Saturday, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over 4.2 innings in a 6-1 loss to the Blue Jays. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers was able to pitch his way out of a few jams until the bottom of the fifth, when he walked Alejandro Kirk to open the inning before surrendering a two-run blast to Santiago Espinal. The lefty would retire the next two batters before being relieved by Reynaldo Lopez but still went on to suffer his third straight loss (spanning four starts). Detmers has allowed at least two runs in all five of his starts this month while failing to make it through five innings in two of those outings.
Jul 22 2023Detmers (2-7) allowed two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out nine over five innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers turned in a fine performance, but the Angels couldn't generate any runs. The southpaw has allowed 15 runs over 20.1 innings in July, but he's now gone two straight starts without allowing a home run. The 24-year-old has a 4.38 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 122:37 K:BB through 96.2 innings over 18 starts. Detmers is tentatively projected for a road start in Toronto next weekend.
Jul 15 2023Detmers allowed four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out six over six innings in a no-decision versus the Astros on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers was better than in his last start before the All-Star break, but it was still a bit of a shaky outing. He was tagged for multiple runs in the third and fourth innings. The southpaw now has a 4.42 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 113:35 K:BB through 91.2 innings across 17 starts overall. He's projected for a home start versus the Pirates next weekend.
Jul 8 2023Detmers (2-6) allowed seven runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four over 3.1 innings to take the loss Saturday versus the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers had allowed just five runs over his previous 31.2 innings, but the Dodgers' lineup tagged him for three solo home runs and made the most with the rest of their baserunners to end the southpaw's hot stretch. It was a sour ending to the first half for Detmers, who has a 4.31 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 107:32 K:BB through 85.2 innings across 16 starts. He's projected for a challenging first matchup out of the All-Star break -- he'll either take the mound versus the Astros or the Yankees, though either potential outcome would be at home in Anaheim.
Jul 5 2023Detmers will start the Angels' final game of the first half on Saturday against the Dodgers, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's Tyler Anderson's turn, but the Angels are off Sunday and would rather have Anderson available in relief, if needed. The matchup for Detmers is a difficult one, but he's been on a roll over his last five starts with a 1.42 ERA and 43:10 K:BB in 31.2 innings. One of his outings during that stretch came against the Dodgers, as he blanked them for seven frames back on June 20.
Jul 2 2023Detmers (2-5) allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out nine over six innings to earn the win Sunday over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers allowed multiple runs for the first time since June 1, but he still emerged with his fourth straight quality start. He's also racked up at least eight strikeouts in each of his last five starts. The southpaw's strong pitching has helped to get his season numbers back on track -- he's at a 3.72 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 103:31 K:BB across 82.1 innings through 15 outings. He's had some bad luck with getting wins, but he's putting himself in position for more if he can keep up the good work. With the Angels having just five games left before the All-Star break, Detmers may not start again until after the Midsummer Classic.
Jun 26 2023Detmers allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out 10 batters over seven innings in a no-decision against the White Sox on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers didn't get the necessary run support to emerge with a win Monday, but he still put forth one of the best efforts of his career. The southpaw finished with his second double-digit strikeout performance of the campaign and notched his third straight quality start after recording just one such effort over his first 11 outings. Detmers has been very impressive over his past four starts, registering a 1.05 ERA and 34:8 K:BB over 25.2 frames. The 2020 first-round draft pick is posting a career-best 11.1 K/9 on the season along with an above-average 3.77 ERA, though he has just one win in 14 starts thus far.
Jun 20 2023Detmers struck out eight and didn't factor in the decision Tuesday against the Dodgers after he allowed two hits and one walk across seven scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 23-year-old delivered his best start of the season as he went toe-to-toe with Clayton Kershaw for seven innings, but he had to settle for a no-decision since the Halos bullpen was unable to maintain the scoreless tie. Detmers has covered at least five frames in each of his last seven outings, and he has given up just two runs with a 24:6 K:BB in his last three starts. The left-hander has a 1-5 record but a solid 4.02 ERA through 69.1 innings this year.
Jun 14 2023Detmers did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing a run on three hits and three walks over six innings against Texas. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A Leody Taveras homer in the third inning was the lone run Detmers allowed Wednesday. The 23-year-old left-hander has struck out eight in consecutive starts while allowing just one run in each outing. He's lowered his ERA from 5.15 to 4.48 with his last two performances while sporting a 1.46 WHIP and 76:26 K:BB over 62.1 innings. Detmers will look to keep rolling in his next start, currently scheduled for next week against the Dodgers.
Jun 9 2023Detmers (1-5) earned the win Thursday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over 5.2 innings against the Cubs. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers finally earned his first win of the campaign after several mediocre outings. This was the southpaw's first time not allowing multiple runs in a start this season. The 23-year-old is tentatively slated to face the Rangers on the road in his next appearance.
Jun 2 2023Detmers (0-5) took the loss against Houston on Thursday, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two batters over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers allowed just one run through four frames before the Astros got to him for three runs on four hits and a walk in the fifth. It was a familiar pattern for the left-hander, as he's struggled mightily in his third time through the order so far this season. Detmers has failed to pick up a win across his first 10 starts on the campaign, and his 5.15 ERA and 1.54 WHIP over 50.2 frames are a big part of the problem. However, he's posted a more promising 3.62 FIP along with a career-best 10.7 K/9, so the potential for a turnaround is there if he can solve his issues and go deeper into games.
May 27 2023Detmers (0-4) took the loss Friday, allowing three runs on 10 hits and two walks over five innings against the Marlins. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While this wasn't a disastrous outing, Detmers has hardly had any standout starts this year, either. Outside of the southpaw's outing at Boston on April 16 (two runs over 6.1 innings), he hasn't been able to complete six innings in a game this season. With the 23-year-old posting a 4.93 ERA and 1.53 WHIP so far, he's not a trustworthy option at this point.
May 20 2023Detmers did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing three runs on two hits and three walks over 5.2 innings against the Twins. He struck out 12. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was Detmers' first time reaching double-digit strikeouts in a start this year. The southpaw has now strung together two consecutive decent starts after lasting fewer than five frames in his previous two outings. The 23-year-old is tentatively slated to face the Red Sox at home in his next appearance.
May 13 2023Detmers did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over five innings against the Guardians. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers seemed primed to pick up his first win of 2023, exiting the game with a 3-2 lead that reached 6-2 by the bottom of the eighth. However, a six-run offensive barrage by the Guardians quickly ruined any hopes of a Detmers win, as Cleveland took a two-run advantage and held the Angels off the board in the top of the ninth. Detmers fell victim to a Guardians team that strikes out the second-fewest times per game, fanning just three batters after recording at least six punchouts in five of his first six starts. Though the 23-year-old has found success in the strikeout column, he has yet to find ways to keep runners from scoring with a 4.89 ERA through 35.0 innings. Detmers is slated to toe the rubber again next Friday against the Twins, who strike out the third-most in MLB.
May 6 2023Detmers (0-3) allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out seven over four innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers threw 60 of 94 pitches for strikes, but Rangers batters were able to foul off 23 of those pitches. His two shortest outings of the season have been his last two, where he's allowed a combined 10 runs (seven earned) over 8.1 innings. The good news is that he hasn't allowed a home run in that span. Detmers now has a 5.10 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 38:12 K:BB over 30 innings spanning six starts. He's projected for a road start in Cleveland next weekend.
Apr 29 2023Detmers (0-2) took the loss Saturday, allowing seven runs on four hits and three walks over 4.1 innings against the Brewers. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers struggled against Milwaukee after allowing just four runs over his previous 12 innings. The southpaw has not been a reliable option as of yet this season, posting a 4.85 ERA and 1.38 WHIP through five starts. However, the former 10th overall pick in 2020 still has plenty of upside, as evidenced by his no-hitter against Tampa Bay on May 10th, 2022. Detmers is tentatively slated to face the Rangers at home in his next start.
Apr 4 2023Detmers did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks over 4.2 innings against the Mariners. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers struggled with his command, but his stuff looked good and induced plenty of swinging strikes. Last year, his first full MLB season, the left-hander posted a 3.77 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with 122 strikeouts over 129.0 innings, and he is firmly entrenched in the Angels' rotation in 2023. Detmers is scheduled to pitch again Sunday at home versus the Blue Jays.
Mar 29 2023Detmers' average velocity on his slider in Tuesday's exhibition contest against the Dodgers was 90.3 mph, per Jared Tims of Talkin' Halos. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers' average slider was thrown at 85.8 mph last season, so the increased velocity this spring is notable. The southpaw also has shown marked gains on his fastball during the exhibition slate, throwing it about five mph faster than he did last season. Detmers had an up-and-down campaign as a rookie in 2022, but he finished with a respectable 3.77 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 22.6 percent strikeout rate. If his velocity jump this spring proves to be sustainable, Detmers could take another leap forward this season.
Mar 17 2023Detmers tossed five innings against Milwaukee in a Cactus League contest Thursday, allowing one run on two hits and no walks while striking out six batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers was perfect through four innings against a Brewers lineup filled mostly with regulars before serving up a solo homer to Luke Voit in the fifth frame. The lefty hurler again showed increased velocity in comparison to last season, as his fastball sat at 94-96 mph and his slider at 88-91 mph, per Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register. Detmers may be poised for a breakout campaign, and he's supporting that notion with a 2.08 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 17:4 K:BB through 13 innings this spring.
Mar 14 2023Detmers' fastball was clocked at 95-97 mph and his slider at 89-91 mph during his last Cactus League start against the Dodgers, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers averaged 93.2 mph with his fastball and 85.9 mph with his slider last season, per Baseball Savant, so these are both notable bumps. His slider velocity did go up last year following a midseason demotion, but where he was sitting versus the Dodgers was even higher than that. Detmers said he didn't necessarily have a goal over the offseason to increase his velocity, but he did work with Driveline Baseball and training guru Eric Cressy. "I said I just want to get stronger and more explosive," Detmers said. "We made up a program for the whole offseason and I just stuck to that. And the velo came." Detmers had already been viewed as a potential breakout candidate in fantasy following his strong finish in 2022 and this news figures to only enhance his draft stock.
Feb 26 2023Detmers pitched two scoreless innings in a Cactus League game against the White Sox on Sunday, allowing two hits and striking out five batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers looked dominant in his first spring action, striking out the side in the first inning and racking up two more Ks in the second. The lefty has posted a modest 22.1 percent strikeout rate through his first 30 big-league starts, but he's shown much more punchout potential in the minors, striking out 122 batters over just 68 innings. Detmers has some buzz as a potential breakout pitcher in fantasy this season, and increased strikeout numbers could certainly help that become a reality.
Oct 1 2022Detmers (7-6) gave up one earned run on four hits and a walk while striking out nine over six innings to earn the win in a 4-1 victory over the Rangers on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers had his heavy slider working well all evening and piled up nine strikeouts on 21 swinging strikes as the Rangers hitters looked overwhelmed by the pitch. It was a high note on which to end the 2022 season for Detmers. He struggled for most of the opening months, but he also pitched the only no-hitter of the year so far. He posted excellent numbers in July and August after a brief stint in the minors. The 23-year-old left-hander's flashes of dominance this season make him a high-upside candidate for 2023.
Sep 25 2022Detmers (6-6) took the loss against Minnesota on Saturday, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits and no walks while striking out two batters over four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers couldn't find his footing in the loss, allowing two runs in the first inning and one run in each of the following three frames. He didn't walk any batters but notched only two strikeouts -- his fewest since June 8. Detmers looked like he had turned a corner between July 8 and Aug. 13, posting a 1.50 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 47:13 K:BB over 36 innings across six starts during that stretch. He's taken a step back since, however, registering a 5.28 ERA and 1.72 WHIP along with a poor 22:11 K:BB over his subsequent six outings.
Sep 18 2022Detmers (6-5) allowed a run on four hits, two walks and a hit batsman while striking out three in six innings to earn the win Sunday over the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers was able to limit the Mariners to an Adam Frazier RBI single in the second inning. Detmers hadn't completed six frames in any of his last five starts. The 23-year-old southpaw's strong start lower his ERA to 3.71 with a 1.20 WHIP and 111:45 K:BB through 119 innings across 23 starts. He's lined up for a road start in Minnesota next weekend.
Sep 12 2022Detmers yielded four runs on six hits and two walks over five frames against Cleveland on Monday. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers was cursed by a brutal second inning in which he allowed all four runs, including a two-run double by Austin Hedges. The 23-year-old lefty saw his season ERA climb to 3.82 alongside a 108:43 K:BB through 22 starts. After yielding two or fewer runs in six straight outings, Detmers has given up four runs in three of his last four starts. He's projected to face Seattle at home next week.
Sep 7 2022Detmers is scheduled to make his next start Monday in Cleveland, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Angels had previously confirmed Detmers as their starting pitcher for Sunday's series finale in Houston, but the young southpaw will be bumped back a day in the schedule as a matter of maintenance in his first full season in the big leagues. Additionally, Detmers has already faced Houston three times this season, so the Angels may have wanted to spare him from another potential blowup after he surrendered four runs on seven hits and two walks over 4.1 innings his last time out against the Astros on Sept. 2.
Sep 2 2022Detmers (5-5) allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts over 4.1 innings, taking the loss Friday versus the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers allowed the Astros to score twice in the third inning, and he put three runners aboard in the fifth, with Jose Marte allowing two of them to score. Over his last four starts, Detmers has alternated between good and bad performances. He's given up 10 runs, 26 hits and 10 walks in 19 innings in that span. He's at a 3.67 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 105:41 K:BB through 108 innings across 21 starts this year. The southpaw is projected for a rematch with the Astros in Houston next weekend.
Aug 27 2022Detmers (5-4) picked up the win in Friday's 12-0 rout of the Blue Jays, allowing four hits and three walks over 5.1 scoreless innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 23-year-old southpaw dealt with traffic on the bases in each of the first three innings but escaped without any damage as the Angels built a 7-0 lead, and Detmers cruised from that point on. He exited after 105 pitches (66 strikes). Over 33.2 innings since the All-Star break, he sports a 2.14 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 42:14 K:BB while winning three of his six starts.
Aug 20 2022Detmers (4-4) took the loss against Detroit on Saturday, allowing four runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out three batters over 4.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers had been on a roll entering the contest, posting a 1.50 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 11.8 K/9 over six starts since his July 8 return from the minors. However, he clearly lacked his best stuff against the Tigers, as he recorded only three strikeouts and and surrendered four extra-base hits (all doubles). The Angels will hope that this was merely a blip on the radar and not an indication that Detmers is dealing with any sort of physical issue. According to Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com, the rookie's velocity was down a tick in the outing, so that's something to keep an eye on moving forward.
Aug 13 2022Detmers allowed two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out nine over five innings in a no-decision versus the Twins on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers has recorded at least six strikeouts in eight straight starts, but he wasn't very efficient Saturday. The southpaw needed 96 pitches (62 strikes) to complete five frames, with Carlos Correa's solo home run and sacrifice fly accounting for the damage on his line. Detmers hasn't allowed more than two runs in one outing since the start of July. He owns a 3.45 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 91:34 K:BB through 94 innings across 18 starts overall. The 23-year-old is projected for a favorable road start versus the Tigers next weekend.
Aug 6 2022Detmers (4-3) earned the win in Game 2 of Saturday's 7-1 victory over Seattle, allowing one run on six hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers kept the damage to a minimum early and surrendered only one run on a Luis Torrens solo shot in the fifth. This was the lefty's third straight start permitting one earned run or fewer. The 23-year-old has pitched to a 1.16 ERA in five starts since the start of July while recording 38 strikeouts in 31 innings. Detmers possesses 3.44 ERA and 1.04 WHIP with 82 strikeouts in 89 innings across 17 starts and lines up to pitch again versus Minnesota next weekend.
Jul 31 2022Detmers registered a no-decision during Sunday's 5-2 loss to Texas, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks with 12 strikeouts in seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers had his best stuff working Sunday, posting a season-high 12 strikeouts, recording an immaculate inning in the second and notching his second-best game score of the season at 74. The only thing missing was a win as a defensive miscue let the tying run cross the plate in the fifth and Los Angeles was unable to capitalize on nearly twice as many hits as Texas. The 23-year-old induced an astounding 24 swinging strikes on 105 pitches en route to the 12 strikeouts and concludes an impressive July with a 1.13 ERA and 0.92 WHIP with 31 strikeouts in 24 innings across four turns. He'll look to stay rolling next weekend with a road start in Seattle on tap.
Jul 24 2022Detmers (3-3) allowed three hits and two walks while striking out six in five scoreless innings to earn the win over Atlanta on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers was unable to record a third consecutive quality start Sunday since he required 90 pitches to get through five innings, but he still had a strong performance to earn his first win since May 10. The southpaw has been effective over three starts this month, posting a 1.06 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in 17 innings. He tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Rangers on Saturday.
Jul 14 2022Detmers allowed two runs on five hits, three walks and a hit batter while striking out six over six innings in a no-decision versus the Astros on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers wasn't as dominant as he was versus the Orioles last Friday, but he still turned in his second straight quality start and his third such effort of the season. The 23-year-old southpaw limited the damage Thursday to the first inning, allowing four baserunners and both runs in the opening frame before settling in. He now has a 4.11 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 57:25 K:BB across 70 innings in 14 starts this season. He won't pitch again until after the All-Star break, but his recent performance makes it seem likely he'll be in the rotation when play resumes, especially if the Angels go back to rolling six starters.
Jul 13 2022Detmers is listed as the Angels' scheduled starting pitcher for Thursday's game against the Astros in Anaheim. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Angels' decision to keep Detmers in the rotation for a second straight turn comes as little surprise after the team optioned fellow starter Chase Silseth to Double-A Rocket City over the weekend. With the Angels shortening their rotation to five men this week ahead of the All-Star break, Detmers was able to stick with the big club over Silseth after he struck out seven over six scoreless innings in Baltimore last Friday. Detmers owns a pedestrian 19.8 percent strikeout rate in the majors this season, but he's recaptured his swing-and-miss stuff over his past two outings between the Angels and Triple-A Salt Lake, racking up 21 punchouts over 12 frames.
Jul 8 2022Detmers allowed two hits and a walk while striking out seven in six scoreless innings during Friday's loss to the Orioles. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander stepped in as a starter Friday after Michael Lorenzen (shoulder) was placed on the injured list, and Detmers was sharp in his return to the major-league mound. He posted a career-high seven strikeouts and left the game with the Angels holding a three-run lead, but he was forced to settle for a no-decision since the bullpen was unable to preserve the advantage. If he draws another start prior to the All-Star break, he tentatively lines up to take the mound at home against the Dodgers next Friday.
Jul 7 2022Detmers will likely start Friday's game against the Orioles, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Angels need somebody to fill a rotation spot for Friday's matchup in Baltimore after Michael Lorenzen (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day injured list, and Detmers will likely rejoin the active roster after being sent down in late June. He allowed just one run on three hits and a walk while striking out 14 in six innings during a start at Triple-A Salt Lake on June 29, and he'll be pitching on full rest if he ultimately takes the mound for the Angels on Friday.
Jun 22 2022Detmers was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers surrendered five runs across five innings Tuesday against the Royals, which was apparently the final straw before losing his spot in the rotation and on the big-league roster. The 22-year-old delivered a no-hitter May 10 against the Rays but otherwise failed to produce a quality start. Overall Detmers has a 4.66 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 44:21 K:BB over 58 innings this season, and he could receive another look in the majors later in the summer if he's able to get back on track with Salt Lake.
Jun 21 2022Detmers allowed five runs on five hits and two walks with six strikeouts in five innings in a no-decision versus the Royals on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers gave up runs in three of the five innings he worked, but the Angels' offense was able to bail him out later in the contest. It was the first time he's completed five innings since May 25. The southpaw is still struggling a bit with a 4.66 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 44:21 K:BB across 58 innings in 12 starts this year. As long as the Angels stick with a six-man rotation, Detmers will likely continue to draw starts. He's tentatively projected for a home start versus the White Sox next week.
Jun 16 2022Detmers will keep his spot in the Angels' rotation and make his next start, likely against Kansas City next week, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers has failed to complete five innings in each of his past three starts, though he has given up just four runs across 12.1 innings over that stretch. Walks have been the biggest problem for the left-hander of late -- during the three-game period, he has posted a troubling 5.8 BB/9. The Angels don't have a ton of options to step into his rotation spot, and they have a doubleheader coming up Saturday, so it isn't a surprise that Detmers will make his next start as scheduled. However, he may need to start pitching deeper into games and reducing his walks in order to maintain his rotation security.
Jun 15 2022Detmers (2-3) took the loss during Wednesday's 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Dodgers, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks with six strikeouts in 3.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers fell behind early after surrendering a three-run Will Smith homer in the first and the Angels couldn't muster any offense with opposing starter Tyler Anderson taking a no-hitter into the ninth. Detmers has struggled since throwing a no-hitter of his own May 10, going 4.1 innings or fewer in four starts and taking the loss in the other as Los Angeles has lost all five games. The 22-year-old owns carries a 4.25 ERA and 1.08 WHIP into a start against Kansas City early next week.
Jun 9 2022Detmers pitched 4.1 scoreless innings against Boston on Wednesday, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out one. He did not factor in the decison. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers did well in keeping the Red Sox off the scoreboard, but he didn't last very long in the contest due to throwing 85 pitches before he could get through the fifth inning. That was partly due to Boston fouling off 22 of his offerings despite collecting only three hits. This was Detmers' second straight short scoreless start -- he also lasted only 4.1 innings against the Yankees in his previous appearance. It's impressive that the left-hander has logged 8.2 scoreless frames against two top offenses, but his fantasy impact is muted by the fact that he hasn't been able to go deep into contests.
Jun 3 2022Detmers did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing zero runs on five hits and three walks over 4.1 innings against the Yankees. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers bounced back Thursday with a solid outing after giving up eight runs over his previous two outings. However, the left-hander got pulled in the fifth with 86 pitches after allowing two of the first three batters to reach. Despite the scoreless outing, Detmers was outshined by Yankees starter Jameson Taillon, so it was unlikely he'd earn the win even if he made it through five innings. Across nine starts, Detmers sports a 4.20 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP with just 31 strikeouts across 45 innings.
Jun 1 2022Detmers won't start as scheduled Wednesday against the Yankees since the game was postponed due to inclement weather. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The game will be made up via a doubleheader Thursday, with Shohei Ohtani starting Game 1 and Detmers pitching in Game 2, per Sam Blum of The Athletic. Since throwing a no-hitter against the Rays on May 10, Detmers has given up eight runs across 9.2 frames in two starts .
May 25 2022Detmers (2-2) took the loss against Texas on Wednesday, allowing five runs on five hits and one walk while striking out three batters across six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a positive that Detmers was able to give the Angels six innings in the contest -- this was only the second time all season that he has pitched that deep into a game. However, the southpaw was tagged for two fourth-inning homers and tied a season-worst mark by yielding five runs overall. Since hurling a no-hitter against Tampa Bay on May 10, Detmers has given up eight earned runs across 9.2 frames. Things won't get easier for him in the near future, as he's lined up to take on the Yankees in New York in his next start.
May 18 2022Detmers did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Rangers, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four over 3.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: On the heels of his no-hitter against Tampa Bay, this was a bit of a disappointment, especially considering the opponent. Detmers served up homers to Corey Seager and Kole Calhoun and was pulled after just 61 pitches. Fatigue was likely a factor after Detmers threw 108 pitches in last week's no-hitter. These are the types of ups and downs we should expect from a rookie pitcher.
May 10 2022Detmers (2-1) earned the win in a complete game, no-hitting the Rays and issuing one walk while striking out two in a 12-0 victory Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In only his 11th major-league start, Detmers joined an exclusive club by throwing a no-hitter. 25 of the 28 batters he faced put the ball in play but none were able to hit safely. Two Rays reached base, one on a walk and the other on an error by first baseman Jared Walsh. The 22-year-old had never pitched more than six innings or had a scoreless outing prior to Tuesday's no-no. The outing lowered his season ERA from 5.32 to 3.77.
May 4 2022Detmers gave up three runs on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings in Wednesday's win over the Red Sox. He struck out two and did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers surrendered a two RBI double to Trevor Story in the bottom of the third inning, scoring Bobby Dalbec and Christian Arroyo. He later allowed another RBI double to Story, which scored Arroyo again. The 22-year-old has struggled to find his footing in 2022, pitching five or less innings in all five of his starts and posting a 5.32 ERA and 1.14 WHIP over 22 innings. He tentatively lines up to face the Rays at home on Tuesday.
Apr 23 2022Detmers (0-1) took the loss Friday as the Angels fell 5-3 to the Orioles, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a solid effort from the rookie left-hander, who threw 48 of 70 pitches for strikes before exiting, but Detmers left the game with his team down 2-0, and the Halos never found an equalizer. Detmers' 6.57 ERA in three starts looks rough, but his 1.30 WHIP and 12:4 K:BB through 12.1 innings suggest he's been at least a little bit unlucky.
Apr 15 2022Detmers yielded five runs on six hits and a walk over 3.1 innings in Friday's win over Texas. He struck out five and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers had allowed just one run on an RBI fielder's choice through the first three innings before the wheels fell off in the fourth. He put four consecutive batters on base with one out, including a two-run double by Charlie Culberson, before leaving the game. He was later charged with two more runs that came around to score with Austin Warren on the mound. Detmers now owns a brutal 8.59 ERA with an 8:3 K:BB through 7.1 frames. He's expected to face Baltimore at home next week.
Apr 8 2022Detmers got a no-decision in a 13-6 loss to the Astros on Friday, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts in four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers pitched well Friday but was stung by the long ball, allowing both runs on solo shots by Jose Altuve and Aldemys Diaz. Manager Joe Maddon took an understandably conservative approach with the former top prospect and Detmers, who struggled during the 2021 campaign. The 22-year-old is scheduled to face the Rangers for his next start on Friday.
Apr 7 2022Detmers will start Friday against the Astros, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers was originally scheduled to start Tuesday against the Marlins, though he's flipping spots in the rotation with Patrick Sandoval. Detmers got some limited experience in the majors last season, posting a poor 7.40 ERA and 1.79 WHIP across 20.2 innings. However, he had an impressive 43.1 percent strikeout rate across 54 frames at Double-A Rocket City in 2021, which, combined with his prospect pedigree, suggests there is significant room for improvement at the big-league level.
Mar 31 2022Detmers is likely to open the season as the Angels' sixth starter, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The team has reportedly picked its sixth starter but won't announce the winner yet, though indications are that Detmers has beaten Jaime Barria for the job. The 2020 10th-overall pick didn't show all that much in his five-start debut last year, posting a 7.40 ERA and a 6.36 FIP, but that's understandable given that he'd only made 13 starts as a professional prior to earning his first call-up. His 42.0 percent strikeout rate in the minors last season hints at his potential, though just how much of it he'll realize right away this season remains to be seen.
Mar 20 2022Detmers threw two innings in the Angels' 7-3 Cactus League win Sunday, allowing one hit while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers flashed the big strikeout potential that helped accelerate his path to the majors last season, as he punched out five of the seven batters he faced. The southpaw whiffed 108 batters in only 62 innings in the minors in 2021 but was not quite as effective after being called up by Los Angeles, striking out 19 in 20.2 frames in the majors. Detmers is the leading candidate to fill the final spot in the team's six-man rotation for the coming campaign, and he could emerge as a viable fantasy asset if he's able to come anywhere close to the strikeout prowess he displayed in the minors.
Oct 3 2021Detmers allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out two across 1.2 innings in the win over the Mariners on Sunday. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers started the season finale after his previous appearance came back on Aug. 21. He failed to last two innings, and allowed all three of his hits in the second frame. The rookie struggled in his five starts this season, carrying a 7.40 ERA and 1.79 WHIP with 19 strikeouts in 20.2 innings.
Oct 1 2021Detmers will start Sunday's season finale against the Mariners, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers missed nearly a month after he tested positive for COVID-19, and he was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake after he was reinstated from the injured list in late September. He allowed one run on four hits and a walk while striking out two in two innings during a Triple-A appearance Monday and is expected to be on a pitch count in his return to the major-league mound Sunday.
Sep 23 2021Detmers (COVID-19) was reinstated from the injured list and was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers has been sidelined for nearly a month, though he has been able to toss both bullpen sessions and simulated games. He's set to start for Salt Lake on Monday and could return to the majors shortly after to make a final start. In four appearances at the big-league level, Detmers has compiled a 7.11 ERA and 1.68 WHIP across 19 innings this season.
Sep 19 2021Angels manager Joe Maddon suggested Saturday that Detmers (illness) could be activated from the COVID-19 injured list at some point during next weekend's series with the Mariners, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After completing a 40-pitch simulated game earlier this weekend, Detmers is expected to toss one more sim game in the next day or two before getting the green light to rejoin the Angels. On the shelf since Aug. 25 following his positive COVID-19 test, Detmers has taken longer than anticipated to build up upon completing his quarantine period, but given his workload in his most recent sim game, the Angels look to be preparing him for a starting role upon his return. In his first four big-league starts before being shut down, Detmers went 1-3 with a 7.11 ERA and 1.68 WHIP while striking out 17 over 19 frames.
Sep 14 2021Manager Joe Maddon said he expects Detmers (illness) to be activated from the COVID-19 injured list for the Sept. 25 game against Seattle, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers tested positive for COVID-19 in late August and has been throwing bullpen sessions since rejoining the team Sept. 5, and he's taking some time to build back up before returning to the mound for the Angels. The 22-year-old has struggled in his first taste of the majors this year with a 7.11 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 17:9 K:BB across 19 innings.
Sep 8 2021Detmers (COVID-19) threw a bullpen session in San Diego on Wednesday, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers recently confirmed that his placement on the injured list in late August was due to a positive COVID-19 test, but the rookie appears to have recovered and will now build up with an eye toward a return. He isn't stretched out to start, however, and could move to a relief role given that he'll almost certainly be on a limited pitch count upon rejoining the big club.
Sep 5 2021Detmers (COVID-19) rejoined the Angels in Anaheim on Friday, per Sam Blum of The Athletic, but it remains unclear when he will be ready to be activated, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers confirmed that he recently tested positive for COVID-19 and was placed in "hard quarantine." The rookie last pitched in a big-league game Aug. 21, so it may take some time for him to ramp back up into game shape. If he can stretch out relatively quickly, Detmers could potentially reclaim his spot in the rotation upon his return.
Aug 25 2021The Angels placed Detmers on the injured list Wednesday for undisclosed reasons. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Such transactions with no injury designations often prove to be COVID-related, but it's unclear if that's the case with Detmers. An explanation for the rookie's going on the IL should become available within the next couple days, at which point an estimation of his return date will be possible.
Aug 21 2021Detmers (1-3) allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out four over 3.2 innings as he took the loss versus Cleveland on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While the southpaw did little to help his own cause, the Angels mustered only four baserunners in the contest to support him. Detmers' biggest mistake was a three-run blast by Jose Ramirez in the third inning. The Angels' first-round pick from 2020 has struggled to a 7.11 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 17:9 K:BB across his first 19 big-league innings. He's projected for a tough home matchup versus San Diego next weekend.
Aug 15 2021Detmers (1-2) earned the win Sunday against the Astros after tossing six innings of one-run ball, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The rookie had a rough start to his MLB career after allowing 11 earned runs across his first 9.1 innings, but he was able to deliver an improved showing in this one and that earned him his first big-league win as a result. It was also the first time Detmers pitched at least six innings, and he also posted the first quality of his MLB career. Last but not least, the six strikeouts represented a season-high mark for him.
Aug 8 2021Detmers (0-2) allowed five earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five across five innings, taking the loss to the Dodgers on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers took his second loss in his second career start. He surrendered five runs, including a two-run homer by Albert Pujols in the second inning. The rookie has had a rough start to his MLB career, allowing 11 earned runs in his first 9.1 innings. However, he was able to improve on his first outing by tallying five punchouts Sunday.
Aug 1 2021Detmers (0-1) allowed six earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two across 4.1 innings, taking the loss to the Athletics on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers made it through his first two innings with the Angels without giving up a run before allowing a five-run fifth inning. He surrendered a pair of home runs to Matt Olson and Yan Gomes. The 22-year-old had a 3.15 ERA and 106 strikeouts in 60 innings between two minor league teams. It is unknown whether he will have a long-term spot in the starting rotation.
Jul 30 2021Detmers will make his major-league debut Sunday against the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers advanced to Triple-A Salt Lake on Saturday and struck out nine in six scoreless frames during his lone appearance with the club. He'll serve as a starter after Alex Cobb (wrist) was placed on the injured list and Shohei Ohtani (thumb) was pushed back to start Monday, but whether Detmers remains in the big-league rotation could depend on his results Sunday.
Jul 22 2021Detmers will be promoted to Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers is one of the Angels' top prospects, and he's been effective at Double-A Rocket City to begin the year. He has a stellar 16.17 K/9 and has posted a 3.50 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 54 innings across 12 starts. It's not yet clear whether the 22-year-old could be in consideration for a major-league roster spot at some point in 2021, but he'll get a chance to prove himself against a higher level of competition going forward.
Jun 27 2021Detmers tossed six innings for Double-A Rocket City on Saturday, allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out 16. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers' outing wasn't without flaws -- he gave up three homers and five earned runs -- but the 21-year-old flashed his impressive strikeout ability by fanning 16 batters over six frames. He has struck out a total of 30 batters over his past two starts covering 12 innings and has registered a massive 16.7 K/9 on the season.
Jun 21 2021Detmers struck out a career-high 14 while allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over six innings in his start Sunday for Double-A Rocket City. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers' best start of the season was highlighted by an immaculate first inning, during which he struck out the side on nine pitches. Through eight starts at Double-A, the 21-year-old lefty already has three double-digit strikeout efforts on his ledger, despite not covering more than six innings in any of his outings.
May 5 2021Detmers will begin his minor-league career with the Double-A Rocket City Trash Pandas, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers was the Angels' first-round pick in the 2020 first-year player draft but wasn't able to log any professional innings last season due to the cancellation of the minor-league season. He was thought to be in contention for a big-league bullpen role coming out of spring training, but the decision was ultimately made to have him start the season at Double-A. The left-hander was originally scheduled to make his pro debut Tuesday, but a weather-related postponement means that he will instead start Wednesday.
Mar 24 2021Detmers was reassigned to minor-league camp Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 2020 first-round was in consideration for a spot in the bullpen for Opening Day, but it's not much of a surprise to see him sent down considering he's yet to make a professional appearance at any level. Detmers could very well make his major-league debut this season, but he'll have to start the campaign in the minors.
Mar 19 2021Detmers is being considered for an Opening Day bullpen spot, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It would be something of a surprise if Detmers did indeed break camp with the big-league team, as last year's canceled minor-league season prevented him from making his professional debut at any level after being selected 10th overall in the draft. He was an advanced college pitcher who was already reportedly under consideration to make his major-league debut last year, however, so there's seemingly a very real chance he debuts at some point this season, even if it's not on Opening Day.
Aug 18 2020Angels manager Joe Maddon indicated Monday that Detmers could make his major-league debut this season, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers was selected by the Angels in the first round of the 2020 first-year player draft. In a typical season, he would he honing his skills at the minor-league level, but he has instead been working out at the team's alternate training site in Long Beach due to the cancellation of the minor-league season. Detmers' command and mound presence are advanced for a pitcher coming out of college, so the Angels may be willing to see how he fares in the big leagues without him ever having pitched a minor-league game. "It's not out of the question that he may be able to help us this year," Maddon said. "Regarding next year, with a full minor-league system operating, who knows? It's just a matter of functionality of the entire organization, I think, and how you're going to react and treat your better minor-league players. I don't know that answer right now."
Jun 30 2020Angels general manager Billy Eppler confirmed Tuesday that Detmers would be included in the team's 60-man player pool for the 2020 season after agreeing to a contract over the weekend that includes a $4.67 million signing bonus, Maria Torres of the Los Angeles Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The No. 10 overall pick in the first-year player draft earlier this month, Detmers will most likely be part of the Angels' "taxi squad" rather than a member of the 30-man roster that Los Angeles will take into Opening Day in late July. Detmers' inclusion in the 60-man pool will at least allow the Angels to oversee his development, as the organization won't have the option of assigning him to an affiliate with the 2020 minor-league season likely to be cancelled. The 20-year-old southpaw lacks high-end velocity but is viewed as a potential No. 2 or mid-rotation starter in the long haul thanks to his stellar command and pitchability.
Jun 10 2020The Angels have selected Detmers with the 10th overall pick in the 2020 first-year player draft. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detmers' fastball sits at around 90-91 mph (touches 94), but that has not prevented him from absolutely dominating college hitters over his last two seasons at Louisville. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound southpaw logged a 2.78 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 167:33 K:BB in 113.1 innings as a sophomore and had a 1.23 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 48:6 K:BB in 22 innings (four starts) before the 2020 season was cancelled. His command, pitchability, competitiveness and mound demeanor are elite for an amateur, which is why he is able to get the absolute most out of his stuff. He locates his fastball wherever he wants and complements it with a plus low-70s 11-to-5 curveball. Detmers throws his fastball and curveball in any count and gets whiffs on both inside and outside of the zone. His changeup is an average-to-above-average pitch that could improve in pro ball, as he has not needed it much to date. His fastball sometimes dips into the high-80s, which naturally leads to skepticism regarding whether he will be able to continue to dominate in pro ball. However, the pitch has above-average vertical drop, which is partly why it is so tough to square up. He seems to have all the tools to be one of those rare pitchers who produce like a No. 2 or No. 3 starter while having fringe-to-average fastball velocity.
