Apr 2 2024Coleman was recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coleman is getting recalled with J.P. France being placed on the Major League Paternity Leave list. The pitcher was optioned to Triple-A in mid-March after struggles in spring training. He also struggled last season, posting an 8.84 ERA in 18.1 innings with the Royals.
Mar 14 2024The Astros optioned Coleman to Triple-A Sugar Land on Thursday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coleman struggled heavily in the majors last season, posting an 8.84 ERA and 2.02 WHIP across 18.1 innings with the Royals. After being traded to Houston in December, Coleman's troubles have continued to plague him in spring training, and he will likely remain in Triple-A until a noticeable improvement is made on the mound.
Dec 6 2023The Astros acquired Coleman from the Royals on Wednesday in exchange for Carlos Mateo, Anne Rogers and Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com report. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coleman broke out with Kansas City in 2022 but regressed in a big way in 2023, posting an 8.84 ERA and 21:19 K:BB over 18.1 innings during his time in the majors. There's stuff to work with here, though, and the Astros have a good reputation when it comes to getting the most out of their pitchers.
Aug 22 2023Coleman was optioned to Triple-A Omaha after Monday's game. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coleman's season struggles continued Monday when he allowed a walk-off home run after hitting a batter in Monday's 6-4 loss to the Athletics. With his demotion, Zack Greinke was reinstated off the injured list in a corresponding move.
Aug 16 2023Coleman (0-1) allowed an unearned run on a hit and a walk while striking out one over two-thirds of an inning, taking the loss Wednesday versus the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coleman loaded the bases with an error, a hit and a walk, and then yielded a sacrifice fly. The Mariners held the lead the rest of the way, sticking Coleman with his first loss in 21 major-league appearances this year. He's avoided taking more defeats simply because the Royals are often already behind when he pitches. For the year, he's managed an awful 8.31 ERA, 2.02 WHIP and 20:18 K:BB through 17.1 innings, though he's also managed to earn four holds. Coleman could still see some high-leverage work, as the Royals' bullpen has been a weakness from top to bottom all year.
Aug 10 2023Coleman will serve as the Royals' opener for Friday's game against the Cardinals, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coleman will be making his first career major-league start Friday, though he will likely only remain in the game for an inning or two before handing things over to Angel Zerpa, who will pitch bulk innings. Coleman hasn't performed very well in the majors this season, accumulating a 10.05 ERA and 2.09 WHIP through 14.1 frames.
Jul 5 2023Kansas City recalled Coleman from Triple-A Omaha on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coleman has surrendered 10 earned runs on seven hits and seven walks in just five innings of relief this season at the major-league level, but the Royals are desperate for fresh arms. He'll presumably operate in a low-leverage bullpen role.
Mar 11 2023Coleman has allowed one earned run on four hits and three walks while striking out six over three innings across three Cactus League appearances. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coleman was one of the Royals' more effective relievers in 2022, posting a 2.78 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 71:37 K:BB and 16 holds over 68 games. The walk issues are still popping up this spring, and Coleman's 3.87 FIP last year suggests regression could be on the way if he can't improve at limiting baserunners.
Sep 20 2022Coleman (5-2) gave up a hit and struck out one in a scoreless inning to earn the win Tuesday over the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was Coleman's first appearance since he took a loss Friday versus the Red Sox, and he bounced back well. He worked the seventh inning and ended up in line for the win when Salvador Perez put the Royals ahead with an RBI double. Coleman has been scored upon in only five of his 24 appearances since the All-Star break. He owns a 2.61 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 64:36 K:BB with 14 holds through 62 innings this season.
Sep 16 2022Coleman (4-2) allowed two runs on two walks in one-third of an inning, taking the loss Friday versus the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coleman walked two of the first three batters in the eighth inning, and closer Scott Barlow allowed both of those runners to score. Coleman's only other loss this year came back on May 1. He saw a 9.1-inning scoreless streak snapped with the sloppy outing Friday, which also lifted his ERA to 2.66 with a 1.25 WHIP and 63:36 K:BB through 61 innings this year. He's added 13 holds and two blown saves while emerging as a setup man for the Royals, though their poor play has offered him few chances to pitch with a lead.
Sep 4 2022Coleman (4-1) allowed a hit and struck out one over 1.1 scoreless innings to earn the win Sunday over the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coleman got the last out of the seventh inning and became the pitcher of record when Bobby Witt put the Royals ahead in the eighth with an RBI double. Since the start of August, Coleman has functioned as an effective setup man. He's allowed two runs on eight hits and five walks while striking out 16 over 14.2 innings, and he's added five holds and two wins in those 14 appearances. He has a 2.54 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 59:34 K:BB with 13 holds and two blown saves through 56.2 innings overall. The right-hander would likely be a secondary option for saves should Scott Barlow be unavailable at any point.
Aug 6 2022Coleman (3-1) pitched a perfect inning to earn the win Saturday over the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coleman did his part to keep the game tied in the ninth inning, and he became the pitcher of record when Nick Pratto hit a two-out, walkoff solo home run in the bottom of the frame. Since the start of July, Coleman has allowed four runs (three earned) in 13.2 innings while adding five holds as he continues to work his way into a higher-leverage role. For the season, he owns a 2.80 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 44:31 K:BB in addition to nine holds through 45 innings.
Jul 18 2022The Royals reinstated Coleman (personal) from the restricted list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coleman was one of 10 Royals players who will rejoin the 26-man active roster after being ineligible to play during the four-game weekend series in Toronto due his vaccination status. He closed the Royals' first-half schedule with a 3.13 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 38:28 K:BB across 37.1 innings in relief while scooping up two wins and seven holds.
Jul 14 2022The Royals placed Coleman (personal) on the restricted list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coleman is one of 10 Royals on the 26-man active roster who won't be eligible for the four-game series in Toronto due to his vaccination status. He'll be formally reinstated from the restricted list for the Royals' first game coming out of the All-Star break July 22 against Tampa Bay. Infielder Maikel Garcia was called up from Double-A Northwest Arkansas to temporarily replace Coleman on the active roster.
Jul 13 2022Coleman is unable to travel to Canada for the four-game series in Toronto this weekend due to his vaccination status, so he'll be placed on the restricted list Wednesday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Royals have 10 players heading to the restricted list for their weekend series, but Coleman is the team's only reliever that is expected to be unavailable due to being unvaccinated. The team will likely call up some relievers to serve as bullpen depth ahead of the All-Star break.
Jul 7 2022Coleman struck out one in a perfect inning during Wednesday's 7-4 win over the Astros, earning a hold. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since the start of June, Coleman has a 2.77 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 12:7 K:BB across 13 innings, though he's also picked up four of his five holds this year in that span. The right-hander's biggest issue is a high walk rate -- he's posted a 6.5 BB/9 this year, which is a trouble that's followed him from the minors. He's pitched to a decent 3.51 ERA, but a 1.38 WHIP and 36:24 K:BB in 33.1 innings this year are concerning enough to likely keep him stuck in middle relief.
Jun 21 2022Coleman (2-1) walked one and struck out none in a scoreless inning to earn the win Tuesday versus the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coleman successfully kept the game tied in the 10th inning, and the Royals pulled ahead in the 11th. Across eight innings in June, Coleman has allowed one run, three hits and six walks with nine strikeouts. He's added two holds and a win in that span, though control remains an issue for the hard-throwing right-hander. Overall, he's logged a 3.18 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, three holds and a 33:23 K:BB in 28.1 innings this season without presenting much of a challenge to Scott Barlow's closer role.
Jun 9 2022Coleman pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one walk, to earn a hold in Wednesday's 8-4 win over the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coleman allowed six runs over seven innings in his last five appearances in May, but he's logged 2.1 scoreless inning to begin June. The right-hander has filled a middle-relief role with the Royals missing several of the bullpen regulars to injury and illness. For the season, Coleman has a 3.57 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 27:19 K:BB, two holds and a 1-1 record across 22.2 innings.
May 26 2022Coleman was recalled from Triple-A Omaha on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old was sent to the minors on Sunday but will quickly rejoin the big-league club with Amir Garrett (undisclosed) headed to the injured list. Coleman has appeared in 17 games for Kansas City this season and has a 4.02 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 21:15 K:BB across 15.2 innings.
May 22 2022Coleman was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coleman surrendered four runs over his last two outings and will now head to the minors. Overall he has a 4.02 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 21:15 K:BB across 15.2 innings this season, and he could rejoin the big-league club later in the year. Brady Singer, who is starting Sunday against Minnesota, was promoted from Omaha in a corresponding move.
May 13 2022Coleman (1-1) earned the win Friday versus the Rockies. He walked two in a scoreless inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coleman successfully navigated Coors Field after starter Zack Greinke came up one out short of qualifying for the win. In his last four outings, Coleman has allowed one hit and four walks with five strikeouts over five scoreless innings. He's posted a 2.19 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 16:11 K:BB and a hold through 14 appearances this season, mainly in a low-leverage role.
May 1 2022Coleman (0-1) took the loss Sunday versus the Yankees. He allowed two runs on two walks and a hit batter without recording an out. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coleman got into trouble in the seventh inning, and Scott Barlow allowed two inherited runners to score. That was enough for Coleman to take the loss. The right-hander's seven runs allowed this season have all come in his last four appearances, inflating his ERA to 8.59 and his WHIP to 1.77. He may be used in lower-leverage spots until he can get back on track.
Apr 30 2022Coleman allowed four runs on three hits and a walk with one strikeout in two-thirds of an inning in Friday's 12-2 loss to the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coleman was tasked with the seventh inning in a 3-2 game, but he didn't do so well. He allowed an RBI single to DJ LeMahieu and a three-run home run to Aaron Judge before Amir Garrett entered the game. Coleman had pitched reasonably well before Friday's messy outing. He's posted a 6.14 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 11:5 K:BB with one hold in nine appearances across 7.1 innings.
Apr 7 2022Coleman made the Royals' Opening Day roster, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old right-hander got his first taste of major-league action last season, allowing one run on five hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in 6.1 inning. Coleman made the Opening Day roster because fellow reliever Joel Payamps (personal) was placed on the family medical emergency list. As such, Coleman will need to hit the ground running if he's to stay in the majors for the full season. He was solid with a 3.55 ERA, 1.09 WHIP And 56:17 K:BB while logging a 4-0 record and three saves with Triple-A Omaha in the latter half of last season.
Sep 20 2021The Royals selected Coleman's contract from Triple-A Omaha ahead of Monday's doubleheader in Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coleman receives his first big-league call-up after compiling a 3.28 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, a 93:22 K:BB and a .186 batting average against over 57.2 innings between Omaha and Double-A Northwest Arkansas. Though he picked up seven saves in the minors this season, Coleman will likely be ticketed for a low-leverage role with the Royals.
Jun 5 2018The Padres have selected Coleman with the 111th overall pick in the 2018 first-year player draft.Missouri State has a good track record of developing big-league pitchers, sending 11 pitchers to the big leagues since 2000, and Coleman has a chance to follow in those footsteps. He has an impressive 6-foot-6, 215-pound frame, so there may be another level he can reach on his already plus fastball. Coleman's next best pitch is an above-average slider, and he'll also show an average curveball and fringe-average changeup. While the refinement of those secondaries would go a long way, the top thing that could prevent him from making it as a starter is his present 45-grade control.
