Jun 12 2025Ashby gave up three hits and no walks in three scoreless innings of relief, earning the save in Thursday's 6-0 win over the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was the first save of the season for Ashby, who fired at least three innings for the first time in 2025. The 27-year-old left-hander is currently being deployed as a multi-inning reliever, but he's mostly worked in lower-leverage spots since coming off the injured list. Through nine innings on the season, Ashby has zero holds but has yet to give up a run while notching a 0.78 WHIP and 9:1 K:BB.
May 23 2025The Brewers reinstated Ashby (oblique) from the 15-day injured list Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby is set to make his 2025 MLB debut after beginning the season on the injured list due to a right oblique strain. The 27-year-old made four appearances in a rehab stint at Triple-A Nashville, logging a 1.50 ERA and a 4:5 K:BB across six innings. Carlos Rodriguez was optioned to Nashville in a corresponding move.
May 9 2025Ashby (oblique) will move his rehab assignment to Triple-A Nashville on Sunday, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby started the season on the injured list due to a right oblique strain he suffered in mid-March. He was recently cleared to embark on a rehab assignment, and in his lone outing in the Arizona Complex League on Tuesday he allowed three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out one over 1.1 innings. The 26-year-old southpaw is aiming to toss about three innings Sunday, and he'll likely need multiple rehab outings before he's cleared to return to the majors.
May 6 2025Ashby (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment with the Brewers' Arizona Complex League affiliate on Tuesday, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby has been out since early March with a right oblique strain but has finally been cleared to appear in a game. The left-hander's rehab assignment figures to be a lengthy one given how much time he's missed, but he could be back before the end of May. Ashby was competing for a spot in the Brewers' rotation before he got hurt, but it's not clear whether they'll bring him back as a starter or reliever.
Apr 14 2025Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Monday that Ashby (oblique) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Jack Stern of BrewerFanatic.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty will then progress to live batting practice sessions and then pitching in extended spring training games. Assuming that all goes well, Ashby should then be ready for a rehab assignment. The southpaw has been out since early March with a right oblique strain.
Apr 2 2025Ashby (oblique) is continuing to build up during his throwing program and should be ready to throw a bullpen session April 11, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby entered spring training with a chance to compete for a spot in the Opening Day rotation, but he never gained much momentum after tweaking his right oblique in his third Cactus League appearance March 3. He was shut down for a couple weeks before resuming his throwing program late in camp, and he seems to be gradually increasing his throwing distance off flat ground. Ashby is one six starters on the 40-man roster who currently resides on the injured list, but Jose Quintana should be ready to make his season debut next week, and Tobias Myers (oblique), Aaron Civale (hamstring) and Brandon Woodruff (shoulder) all appear likely to beat Ashby back from the IL. With that in mind, Ashby could be ticketed for the bullpen or the Triple-A Nashville rotation once he's back to full health.
Mar 27 2025The Brewers placed Ashby (oblique) on the 15-day injured list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby sustained a right oblique strain March 3 and wasn't able to bounce back from the injury as quickly as the Brewers had hoped, which will result in him opening the season on the shelf. The southpaw wasn't expected to resume his throwing program until this week, and since he's likely to be stretched out as a starter, he could be a month or longer away from being ready to return from the IL. Ashby has a minor-league option remaining, so the Brewers could send him to Triple-A Nashville if the big club doesn't have a spot for him in the rotation by the time he's activated.
Mar 7 2025Ashby (oblique) will be shut down for about two weeks before resuming a throwing program, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby said Friday that the second opinion on his right oblique strain was more favorable than the first, but he will still need some down time and will not be ready for Opening Day. The left-hander anticipates being stretched back out as a starting pitcher, but it's unclear what his role will be with the Brewers once he's healthy.
Mar 5 2025Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Wednesday that Ashby (oblique) will receive a second opinion on his injury in the coming days, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Ashby exited Monday in his most recent Cactus League appearance, he was sent in Tuesday for an MRI, which revealed a left oblique strain. The grade of the strain remains undetermined, however, and Murphy said he's hopeful that Ashby's second opinion brings more clarity on that front. Once the Brewers know the full scope of Ashby's injury, a clearer timeline for his return will likely be established, but even a minor oblique strain would likely put the southpaw on the outside looking in for a spot on the Opening Day roster.
Mar 3 2025Ashby was pulled from Monday's spring training game against the Reds due to a left oblique strain, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby made it through one inning Monday before being pulled with the injury. Skipper Pat Murphy stated that it's unlikely to be a months-long absence for Ashby, but the club will know more after the southpaw undergoes imaging Tuesday.
Aug 25 2024The Brewers recalled Ashby from Triple-A Nashville on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander has started in 14 of his 25 appearances for Nashville this season, and he's recently been operating out of the bullpen. Ashby has delivered six straight scoreless appearances at Triple-A and has a 14:1 K:BB during that stretch. He'll step into relief role for the Brewers, taking the roster spot of Nick Mears (forearm).
Jun 7 2024The Brewers optioned Ashby to Triple-A Nashville on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Brewers are down multiple starters due to injury, so this move seems to reflect their lack of faith in Ashby. The left-hander made a start Wednesday against the Phillies, allowing just two runs but walking five over five innings. He will remain stretched out in the Nashville rotation.
Jun 5 2024Ashby (0-2) took the loss Wednesday as the Brewers were downed 2-0 by the Phillies, giving up two runs on two hits and five walks over five innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw was recalled from Triple-A Nashville earlier in the day but had trouble finding the plate, tossing 49 of 91 pitches for strikes, and Ashby eventually paid for the free passes in the fifth inning when Garrett Stubbs led off the frame with a walk before Nick Castellanos clubbed a two-run homer. With Robert Gasser (elbow) the latest Milwaukee pitcher to land on the IL, Ashby figures to get multiple turns in the rotation. He lines up to make his next outing at home early next week against the Blue Jays.
Jun 4 2024The Brewers will recall Ashby from Triple-A Nashville to start Wednesday's game versus the Phillies, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Robert Gasser (elbow) potentially facing a stint on the injured list, the Brewers will promote Ashby from Triple-A to fill the open slot in their rotation. Ashby was brought up for a spot start in early April, during which he allowed four earned runs in just 3.2 innings while striking out two batters and walking two. He hasn't been much better in the minors so far, posting a 6.80 ERA and 1.99 WHIP through 43.2 innings, though he threw seven shutout frames during his most recent outing with Nashville.
Apr 9 2024Ashby was optioned to Triple-A Nashville by the Brewers on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The move comes a day after the left-hander was torched for eight runs (four earned) over 3.2 innings against the Reds. Ashby should get another shot in the rotation eventually, but the Brewers' bullpen needs help so Kevin Herget has been summoned.
Apr 8 2024Ashby (0-1) took the loss Monday, allowing eight runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks over 3.2 innings against the Reds. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby faced a tough test Monday night against the Reds on the road for his first major league appearance since Oct. 2022. The 25-year-old left-hander also worked with a significantly diminished pitch arsenal compared to 2022 as his sinker averaged only 93.6 mph, down 2.1 mph. Ashby should continue to occupy a place in the Brewers rotation until Jakob Junis (shoulder) is healthy. He is scheduled to make his next start on the road against the Orioles.
Apr 6 2024The Brewers recalled Ashby from Triple-A Nashville on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Jakob Junis (shoulder) headed for the injured list, Ashby will come up from the minors and figures to fill the void in the Brewers' rotation. The 25-year-old lefty didn't pitch at all in 2023 as he worked his way back from a shoulder procedure, and he surrendered three runs across five innings during his first start in Triple-A.
Mar 22 2024The Brewers optioned Ashby to Triple-A Nashville on Friday, Sophia Minnaert of Bally Sports Wisconsin reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby came into camp with a shot at a rotation spot, but he allowed four runs (three earned) with a 3:4 K:BB over three innings and continued to struggle to regain his pre-shoulder surgery velocity. The left-hander could still play a major role with the Brewers this season, but he'll try to sharpen things up in the minors first.
Mar 3 2024Ashby (shoulder) retired one of the six batters he faced and gave up four runs (three earned) on two hits and one walk Saturday in the Brewers' 11-3 loss to the Dodgers in Cactus League play. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby is getting the chance to compete for a spot in the Brewers' Opening Day rotation after he missed the entire 2023 season while recovering from the left shoulder surgery he underwent last April. Though he was deployed in relief in his spring debut, Ashby still saw a healthy workload Saturday, as he tossed 24 pitches (12 strikes) while facing six hitters. Unsurprisingly, Ashby looked rusty while pitching in a competitive setting for the first time since October 2022, but the Brewers are hoping that he'll be able to iron out the kinks over his subsequent spring appearances. Ashby still has two minor-league options remaining, so the Brewers could send him to Triple-A Nashville to begin the 2024 campaign if they're not confident that he's ready to pitch effectively at the big-league level by late March.
Feb 23 2024Ashby (shoulder) told reporters Friday that he's healthy and will be competing for a spot in the Brewers' rotation this spring, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby had left shoulder surgery last April and was roughed up in seven rehab appearances after returning, posting a 15.43 ERA. His velocity was reportedly trending in the right direction as of last fall, so it will be interesting to see what the radar gun says this spring. It's not clear when the southpaw will be maing his Cactus League debut. When right, Ashby has loads of upside, but he has some boxes to check from a stuff and performance standpoint before fantasy managers should get excited again.
Oct 10 2023Brewers general manager Matt Arnold said Tuesday that Ashby's (shoulder) velocity has been trending in the right direction during recent throwing sessions, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby underwent left shoulder surgery in April and struggled to regain his pre-op velocity initially. However, it sounds like it has ticked back up as he further distances himself from the operation. Ashby wound up being limited to just seven rehab innings in 2023, but the hope is that he will be ready to go for spring training.
Sep 21 2023The Brewers transferred Ashby's (shoulder) rehab assignment to Triple-A Nashville on Thursday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby remains unlikely to return to the Brewers' bullpen this season, but he continues to progress through the team's farm system as he works his way back from a shoulder procedure he underwent in April. The 25-year-old lefty has surrendered eight runs (seven earned) through 5.1 innings during his assignment and should be ready to go for spring training in 2024.
Sep 12 2023Ashby (shoulder) isn't expected to return from the 60-day injured list this season, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander hasn't suffered a setback in his recovery from the arthroscopic shoulder procedure he underwent in April, but the Brewers want him to focus on building up his arm in the minors over the next few weeks rather than gearing up for a return to the MLB bullpen. Assuming the Brewers don't deviate from that plan, Ashby will continue to make rehab appearances at Double-A Biloxi this week before moving up to Triple-A Nashville, where he'll finish the 2023 campaign. Ashby has resided on the Brewers' IL all season but began his rehab assignment at High-A Wisconsin earlier this month, striking out five and walking five while allowing three runs (two earned) in 3.2 innings over three appearances before moving up to Biloxi.
Sep 4 2023Ashby (shoulder) will make another rehab appearance for High-A Wisconsin this week before moving his rehab to Double-A Biloxi next week, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby struck out two and walked two in a scoreless frame Sept. 2 in his first rehab appearance for Wisconsin. If he stays on this track, Ashby could be activated in mid-to-late September.
Sep 2 2023Ashby (shoulder) began a rehab assignment with High-A Wisconsin on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby has been on the injured list all season while recovering from a shoulder surgery he underwent in early April. After pitching several side sessions to work out some issues with his delivery, the 25-year-old southpaw is now ready to return to game action. Ashby should be able to rejoin Milwaukee's bullpen as a multi-inning reliever before the end of the season.
Aug 27 2023Ashby (shoulder) is on track to begin a minor-league rehab assignment next Saturday at High-A Wisconsin, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby has been working through some mechanical issues but recently turned a corner and looks ready to pitch in a live game for the first time in 2023. The 25-year-old left-hander underwent arthroscopic surgery on his throwing shoulder in April. Ashby tossed a 35-pitch bullpen session Saturday, and he'll head to the Brewers' spring training complex in Arizona this week for a live batting practice session before he reports to Milwaukee's Midwest League affiliate. He's expected to serve as a multi-inning reliever for the Brewers once he returns from the 60-day injured list.
Aug 22 2023Ashby (shoulder) acknowledged Tuesday that he is still working on his delivery in side sessions, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: At last check, the 25-year-old left-hander was said to be nearing a minor-league rehab assignment, but his velocity hasn't returned to full force and he'll need more time before returning to live games. Ashby has been on the shelf all season due to a shoulder injury that required arthroscopic surgery back in early April.
Aug 15 2023The Brewers will make a decision on when to send Ashby (shoulder) on a rehab assignment "very soon," Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby has been throwing bullpens and batting practice at the Brewers' complex in Arizona with no issues, but he hasn't been able to get up to his usual velocity. As a result, the team will be forced to decide whether to keep building Ashby up or send him on a minor-league rehab assignment. Manager Craig Counsell emphasized the importance of having Ashby capable of operating at "full octane" for Milwaukee down the stretch, but he added there will be "hurdles to clear" in order to do so.
Jul 18 2023Ashby (shoulder) will begin appearing in Arizona Complex League games in the near future, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There's still no clear timeline for Ashby's return to Milwaukee, but he will be brought back up as a reliever, allowing for a quicker rehab assignment. The 25-year-old lefty could eventually be stretched back out into a starter, but for now his role seems set as a multi-inning reliever.
Apr 5 2023Brewers manager Craig Counsell announced Wednesday that Ashby needs arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The procedure is scheduled for Friday and could knock Ashby out for the entire season. He was placed on the 15-day injured list just before Opening Day after being diagnosed with an impingement and slight labral tear back in late February. The initial hope was that the 24-year-old southpaw might be able to join the Brewers by mid-May, but treatment and rest failed to solve the issue. Milwaukee will likely soon move him to the 60-day IL.
Mar 29 2023Ashby (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby is likely to miss the first six weeks of the regular season while recovering from the left shoulder injury, and he has yet to return to throwing bullpens as of yet after being diagnosed with a partial tear and impingement of his labrum. The southpaw could make starts for the Brewers upon his return, but Milwaukee might ease the 24-year-old back into action.
Mar 15 2023Ashby (shoulder) played catch on flat ground Wednesday in Brewers camp, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby said he was tossing at a distance of about 75 feet and that the workout lasted around 10 minutes. He plans to do something similar within the next couple of days, assuming his left shoulder continues to respond well. The 24-year-old southpaw will open the 2023 season on the injured list after being diagnosed last month with a slight labral tear and impingement, but he could be an option for Milwaukee by mid-May if there are no hiccups in his throwing progression.
Mar 13 2023Ashby (shoulder) is scheduled to do some flat-ground throwing Wednesday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby is nearing the end of a six-week shutdown period while he works his way back from an impingement and slight labral tear in his left shoulder. The hope is that the southpaw will be ready to rejoin the Brewers around mid-May, although he'll have a lot of boxes to check to make that happen.
Feb 21 2023Ashby (shoulder) said Tuesday he's hoping to return by mid-May, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby revealed the left shoulder injury he's dealing with is an impingement and a slight labral tear, specifically, and also that he received a platelet-rich plasma injection in late January. He's about halfway into a six-week shutdown period before he can ramp things back up again.
Feb 16 2023Brewers manager Craig Counsell said Thursday that Ashby (shoulder) will be out for "a couple of months," Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McCalvy brought some left shoulder fatigue into Brewers camp and it has since been diagnosed as inflammation. The 24-year-old left-hander will likely be fully held out of Cactus League action before landing on the injured list just ahead of Opening Day. Expect more clarity later this spring on a mapped-out timeline for his 2023 season debut.
Feb 8 2023General manager Matt Arnold said Wednesday that Ashby will be behind the Brewers' other starting pitchers in camp while he contends with left shoulder fatigue, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Brewers are going to take things easy with Ashby to start spring training, an approach that makes sense given that the southpaw battled shoulder inflammation in 2022. The 24-year-old struck out 126 batters in his 107.1 innings over 27 appearances last season, but he also walked 47 and allowed 15 homers. There's certainly upside in Ashby's arm because of his ability to miss bats, but his command along with health concerns makes him a risky proposition for the upcoming campaign.
Oct 2 2022Ashby did not factor into the decision against the Marlins on Saturday, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out six and walking none over 4.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby tossed 37 of 65 pitches for strikes across 4.1 frames. While he allowed just three hits, one was a two-run shot from Peyton Burdick. Ashby's innings have been limited since August, with the young lefty lasting five innings or more just twice in six appearances since then. He has just three quality starts on the year and has recently been used in a hybrid starter/reliever role. After Saturday's outing, Ashby's ERA sits at 4.49.
Oct 1 2022Ashby will start Saturday's game against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby worked out of the bullpen during Sunday's loss to the Reds and allowed a run on two hits and two walks while failing to record a strikeout in 1.2 innings. He hasn't tossed more than 41 pitches in either of his two appearances since returning from the injured list, so it's possible that he won't be able to handle a full workload as Saturday's starter.
Sep 26 2022Ashby covered 1.2 innings out of the bullpen in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Reds, allowing one earned run on two hits and two walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In his return from the 15-day injured list last Tuesday, Ashby made a two-inning start against the Mets, but he shifted to a relief role for the Brewers' series finale with the Reds. Ashby ended up following starter Freddy Peralta, who was capped at two innings following his own return from the IL on Sunday. Since both Peralta and Eric Lauer both came off the IL over the weekend and were limited in their respective starts, the Brewers could need Ashby to piggyback one of the two pitchers during their upcoming outings against the Marlins this weekend.
Sep 20 2022Ashby pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out two in Tuesday's loss to the Mets. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby was activated from the 15-day injured list ahead of Tuesday's start following a shoulder injury and he was able to hold the Mets scoreless over two frames. The left-hander wasn't expected to handle a full workload and was removed from the contest after tossing 41 pitches. Prior to heading to the IL, Ashby had struggled to a 6.89 ERA over 15.2 innings in his previous three starts. Overall, the 24-year-old owns a 4.48 ERA and 1.43 WHIP with 118 punchouts over 98.1 frames in 24 appearances this season including 18 starts.
Sep 19 2022Ashby (shoulder) will be reinstated from the 15-day injured list Tuesday to start a bullpen game against the Mets, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby landed on the injured list in late August due to shoulder inflammation but resumed mound work last week. He's expected to take on a relief role over the final few weeks of the regular season so he doesn't have to fully build up to a starting role, but he'll begin Tuesday's matchup on the mound since the Brewers plan to lean on their bullpen.
Sep 14 2022Ashby (shoulder) threw 18 pitches during a bullpen session Wednesday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby has been on the injured list since late August due to shoulder inflammation, and Wednesday's throwing session marked the first time that he threw off a mound since sustaining his injury. The southpaw will take two days off before throwing another bullpen Saturday in an attempt to get him ready for a bullpen role once he's deemed ready to return.
Sep 10 2022Ashby (shoulder) will throw off a mound Sunday or Monday but is not being stretched out to start, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby hit the injured list with shoulder inflammation in late August. While he's making progress towards a return to action, he wouldn't have time to make many appearances if he had to go through a full build-up process as a starter. Instead, the Brewers are valuing getting him back as soon as possible, albeit in a relief role. The decision makes sense giving the timing of the injury but robs Ashby of most of his fantasy value.
Sep 1 2022Ashby (shoulder) is expected to begin playing catch in the coming days, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby has been shut down since landing on the injured list, retroactive to Aug. 20. While he'll have more work to do prior to his return, it's a positive step that he'll be able to engage in his first activity since being sidelined.
Aug 22 2022Ashby was placed on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation Monday, retroactive to Aug. 20. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby struggled during Friday's start against the Cubs, giving up six runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out eight in five innings. It's possible that his injury contributed to his struggles, and he'll ultimately be forced to miss time. The Brewers haven't yet indicated who will take Ashby's place in the rotation, but Jason Alexander should be a candidate to do so after he was recalled Monday.
Aug 20 2022Ashby didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 8-7 loss to the Cubs, surrendering six runs on eight hits over five innings. He struck out eight without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw didn't issue a walk in a start of five innings or longer for the first time since June 4, but he did issue two wild pitches and Ashby couldn't keep runners from crossing the plate when they did reach base. In five outings since the All-Star break, he's posted a 4.61 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 33:11 K:BB through 27.1 innings, but he's still looking for his first win since July 8.
Aug 15 2022Ashby did not factor into the decision against the Cardinals on Sunday, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out five and walking two over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby pitched well Sunday, throwing 51 of 79 pitches for strikes across six frames. He limited the damage to two earned runs, both solo shots. Ashby lasted six innings for the fourth time in 16 starts this season, pitching much more efficiently than in previous contests. This was his third quality start of the year, and helped improve his ERA to 4.24.
Aug 6 2022Ashby (2-10) allowed four runs on three hits, five walks and a hit batter while striking out five over 4.2 innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby gave up two runs in the second inning and a two-run home run to Jose Barrero in the fourth. The five walks Ashby allowed matched a season high, and this was the first time in six starts he's allowed more than two earned runs. The southpaw now has a 4.32 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 103:41 K:BB through 85.1 innings across 21 appearances (15 starts). He's projected for a road start in St. Louis next weekend, with two off days for the Brewers next week likely affording Ashby extra rest.
Jul 31 2022Ashby (2-9) allowed five unearned runs on five hits and three walks over 4.2 innings Sunday, striking out six and taking a loss against Boston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby rolled through four scoreless frames before he was tagged with five unearned runs in the fifth inning. It was the first time he allowed more than two runs in an appearance since July 2 against the Pirates. Despite the lackluster outing, he lowered his season ERA to 4.13 with a 98:36 K:BB through 80.2 innings. Ashby is projected to face the Reds at home next weekend.
Jul 26 2022Ashby (2-8) took the loss against Colorado on Monday, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out nine batters over 7.0 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby racked up 17 swinging strikes and completed a season-high seven innings in the contest, but he got no support from his offense and ended up with his eighth loss. This was nonetheless a positive performance for the left-hander, as he notched his first quality start since May 30. Ashby's 4.38 ERA on the season reflects the inconsistent nature of his campaign, but he has shown flashes of his potential with 92 strikeouts over 76.0 innings.
Jul 23 2022Ashby signed a five-year, $20.5 million contract with Milwaukee on Saturday that includes incentives and club options for 2028 and 2029. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Much like the extension Freddy Peralta signed a couple years ago, this contract will provide Ashby some financial certainty and it presumably has team-friendly terms if Ashby pitches to his potential. The electric southpaw has had some high points and some struggles this season, but he is well rested after the break and is scheduled to start Monday at home against the Rockies.
Jul 18 2022Ashby (2-7) was the pitcher of record in Sunday's 9-5 loss to the Giants after giving up two earned runs on three hits and no walks while striking out two over one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby was called upon on three days' rest to start the Brewers' final game before the All-Star break, but he essentially served as an opener for what ended up being a bullpen day for Milwaukee. Even though he came into the outing knowing he wouldn't work deep into the start, Ashby didn't have his best stuff and put Milwaukee an early 2-1 hole the team was unable to dig out of. He heads into the break with a 4.57 ERA and 1.49 WHIP over 69 innings this season.
Jul 16 2022Ashby will start Sunday's series finale against the Giants in San Francisco, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jason Alexander had been listed as the Brewers' probable starter for Sunday, but the team will go with Ashby on three days' rest instead. The reason for the change was not immediately available. Ashby went 4.1 innings his last time out and has failed to complete five innings in four of his last five starts around an IL stint with left forearm inflammation.
Jul 13 2022Ashby allowed one earned run on six hits and three walks while striking out five across 4.1 innings Wednesday against the Twins. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby limited the damage against him effectively, and he has now allowed only three earned runs across his last 9.1 innings in the span of two starts. However, in order to record 13 outs Wednesday, Ashby had to throw 101 pitches -- only 58 of which went for strikes. Ashby has shown flashes of effectiveness as a starter this season, but he'll have to improve his control to get more consistent results, as he has walked more than three batters in six of 11 starts on the campaign. Overall, Ashby owns a 4.37 ERA with a 81:32 K:BB across 68 frames for the season.
Jul 9 2022Ashby (2-6) gave up two earned runs on two walks and three hits while striking out three over five innings to earn the win in a 4-3 victory over the Pirates on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby did just enough to earn the win against a weak Pirates offense by lasting five innings on 72 pitches. The only runs he gave up came on a two-run shot off the bat of Diego Castillo in the fourth. The win breaks a chain of poor outings which saw the 24-year-old left-hander's ERA spike from 2.70 at the end of May to 4.60 coming into this start. Despite the struggles, Ashby's plus stuff has racked up 76 strikeouts in 63.2 innings pitched this season. He is expected to take the mound next week at San Francisco.
Jul 2 2022Ashby (1-6) took the loss during Saturday's 7-4 defeat at the hands of the Pirates, allowing four runs on five hits and one walk with six strikeouts in 3.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his return from a two-week stint on the IL due to a forearm injury, Ashby navigated the first two frames unscathed but encountered trouble in the third when he surrendered three runs and was chased by an Oneil Cruz home run the following inning. Despite the abbreviated start, the 24-year-old still struck out six batters and recorded an impressive eight swinging strikes on only 62 pitches. Ashby carries a mediocre 4.60 ERA into a rematch with Pittsburgh slated for next weekend.
Jun 30 2022Ashby (forearm) is lined up to start Saturday's game in Pittsburgh, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby threw a bullpen session Wednesday that apparently went well, as the southpaw is slated to return from the 15-day injured list when first eligible Saturday. The 24-year-old struggled ahead of his absence, as he allowed 14 runs in 15 innings over his three starts prior to landing on the IL.
Jun 29 2022Ashby (forearm) threw a bullpen session in Tampa on Wednesday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby has been on the 15-day injured list since June 17 due to forearm inflammation, but he's downplayed the severity of the issue recently. He'll meet with the team's staff following Wednesday's throwing session to determine the next steps in his recovery, but it's possible that he returns to the mound during the Brewers' weekend series in Pittsburgh.
Jun 23 2022Ashby (forearm) said he's feeling great and is scheduled for a bullpen session Saturday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby hit the 15-day injured list with left forearm inflammation Monday but said later that day he wasn't overly concerned about the issue. His outlook remains positive, though whether or not it's an accurate outlook won't become clear until after he tests his arm in the bullpen.
Jun 20 2022Ashby isn't particularly worried about the forearm inflammation which sent him to the injured list Monday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby left his previous start Tuesday against the Mets due to the injury, but he appeared to be on track to avoid missing time before the Brewers changed course and placed him on the injured list. Ashby's lack of concern stems from the fact that his velocity was fine in his Sunday bullpen session, but the Brewers nonetheless decided it was best for him to miss at least two turns in the rotation.
Jun 19 2022Ashby (forearm) is listed as the Brewers' probable starting pitcher for Tuesday's home game versus the Cardinals, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby's inclusion on the upcoming pitching schedule suggests that he's on track to avoid the 15-day injured list after exiting his most recent start Thursday with left forearm tightness. Manager Craig Counsell characterized Ashby's injury as more of a fatigue issue following the game, and the let-hander seemingly backed up that sentiment by faring well during his throwing session Saturday. So long as he remains free of setbacks for the next few days, Ashby should be on tap for a normal workload Tuesday.
Jun 18 2022Ashby (forearm) performed well during a throwing session Saturday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby exited Thursday's start against the Mets as a precautionary measure due to left forearm tightness, but he's downplayed the severity of the issue in recent days. He said Friday that he expects to make his next turn through the rotation, and he was able to ramp up his intensity during Saturday's throwing session. Manager Craig Counsell said Saturday that the left-hander remains day-to-day for now, but he's certainly trending in the right direction.
Jun 16 2022Manager Craig Counsell described Ashby's injury as more of a fatigue issue following Thursday's loss to the Mets, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby was diagnosed with left forearm tightness after exiting Thursday's matchup in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Counsell said that the southpaw's early examinations didn't reveal anything too concerning. The 24-year-old will be examined further Friday, but he's optimistic that he'll be able to make his next scheduled start. If he's deemed healthy enough to pitch, Ashby tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Cardinals on Tuesday.
Jun 10 2022Ashby (1-5) allowed six runs on 13 hits and a walk while striking out two in 4.2 innings to take the loss during Friday's game against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby was dominant over his final two starts in May, as he logged a 0.77 ERA and 1.20 WHIP while striking out 17 in 11.2 scoreless innings during that time. However, he's given up 10 runs in 10.2 innings over his first two outings in June. The southpaw still handled a significant workload Friday, as he threw 104 pitches (77 strikes). Ashby tentatively lines up for a tough matchup on the road against the Mets on Thursday.
Jun 4 2022Ashby (1-4) took the loss against San Diego on Saturday, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out nine over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby had his stuff mostly working in the contest, as he registered 16 swinging strikes and struck out nine batters. However, he was hounded by Padres first baseman Jake Cronenworth, who notched a run-scoring double in the third inning and a two-run homer in the fifth. Ashby has fanned 21 batters across 12 innings over his past two starts, and he has tossed a season-high six frames in each appearance. He is settling in as a full-time starter and is consequently seeing his fantasy stock soar. Ashby is lined up to make his next start in Washington next week.
May 30 2022Ashby (1-3) allowed a run on five hits and two walks with 12 strikeouts in six innings in Monday's 3-1 win over the Cubs in the second game of a doubleheader. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby posted his longest outing of the year, and it was one of his best, with the 12 strikeouts marking a season high. The lone run on his line was a Willson Contreras solo home run in the fourth inning. Ashby continues to pitch well since joining the rotation, and he now has a 2.70 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 51:22 K:BB across 40 innings in 11 appearances (five starts). He lines up for a home start versus the Padres this weekend -- he limited them to one unearned run in 5.2 innings in a May 25 start in San Diego.
May 26 2022Ashby didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 2-1 win over the Padres, allowing one unearned run on four hits and three walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pitching in San Diego, the city where his uncle Andy became a two-time All-Star in the late 90s, Ashby stifled the Padres over 91 pitches (59 strikes) but left the game on the hook for his fourth loss until the Brewers scrounged up a couple runs in the seventh inning. The 24-year-old southpaw will be a regular member of the rotation while Freddy Peralta (lat) is sidelined, and while he's still looking for his first win of 2022, Ashby's 2.91 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 39:20 K:BB through 34 innings suggest it shouldn't be too long in coming.
May 24 2022Ashby is listed as the Brewers' scheduled starting pitcher for Wednesday's game in San Diego. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby has worked out of the bullpen for both of his last two appearances, but he'll slot back into the rotation this week with the Brewers in the midst of a stretch of 18 games in 17 days. The 24-year-old lefty should have a good chance to stick around as a permanent member of the rotation for the foreseeable future, as the Brewers placed No. 3 starter Freddy Peralta on the 15-day injured list Monday with a lat strain that will likely keep him on the shelf for several weeks. Ashby is likely already rostered in most deeper leagues, but he'll be an intriguing pickup in shallower formats now that he has a clear path to making regular turns through the rotation. Over 60 career big-league innings, Ashby owns a 4.05 ERA (3.33 SIERA), 1.27 WHIP and 17.2 K-BB%.
May 21 2022Ashby will start at some point during the Brewers' upcoming road trip, though the team has yet to announce which game, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby has moved between the rotation and bullpen throughout the season, starting when the Brewers have a long stretch without an off day and remaining in the bullpen otherwise. The team has just started a stretch in which it will play 18 games in 17 days, with 11 of those games coming on a road trip which lasts from May 23 through June 1. Ashby will presumably make one or two starts during that period.
May 15 2022Ashby secured a four-inning save in Sunday's win over the Marlins. He struck out eight and did not allow a hit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lone Marlin to reach base during Ashby's four shutout frames was Brian Anderson; he got to first after striking out in the eighth inning. Ashby struck out a career-high eight batters and he improved his season K:BB to 33:17 through 27.1 innings. The 23-year-old could move back into the rotation next week unless the Brewers plan on using him in more of a long-relief role.
May 10 2022Ashby isn't scheduled to start during the Brewers' upcoming three-game series in Miami this weekend and is expected to work out of the bullpen, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Milwaukee plays only six games this week, so the club will move back to a five-man rotation, leaving Ashby as the odd man out. Ashby faltered in his third start of the season Sunday in Atlanta, surrendering a season-high six earned runs on six hits and four walks while striking out three in four innings.
May 8 2022Ashby (0-3) allowed six runs on six hits and four walks while striking out three in four innings to take the loss Sunday against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby held Atlanta scoreless in the bottom of the first inning Sunday, but things started to unravel in the second frame when Atlanta put up four runs. The southpaw threw just 46 of his 82 pitches for strikes and failed to generate much production during his third start of the season. The Brewers have two off days over the next two weeks, so Ashby's next appearance will likely come out of the bullpen.
May 4 2022Ashby is scheduled to start Sunday's game in Atlanta, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 23-year-old pitched in long relief Tuesday behind Brandon Woodruff and delivered 2.1 scoreless frames, and he'll rejoin the rotation this weekend. The Brewers apparently want to keep their starters on a six-day pitching schedule, and Ashby will bounce between the bullpen and rotation as needed. The left-hander has pitched well early in 2022 with a 2.33 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 22:13 K:BB across 19.1 innings.
May 1 2022Ashby isn't listed among Milwaukee's probable starters for the upcoming three-game series against Cincinnati, which begins Tuesday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby allowed one run over 5.2 innings Wednesday but will now shift back to the bullpen, likely since the Brewers have a scheduled off day Monday. The 23-year-old has started in two of five appearances thus far in 2022 and has a 2.65 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 19:13 K:BB across 17 innings. The young lefty is likely to keep bouncing between the rotation and bullpen as long as the rest of Milwaukee's starting pitchers remain healthy.
Apr 23 2022Ashby is expected to start Wednesday's game against the Pirates, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby has made one start and three relief appearances this season, posting a 3.18 ERA in 11.1 innings despite a potentially worrying 14.8 percent walk rate. The Brewers seem to want to give their starters an extra day of rest this season, so they're deploying Ashby as a sixth starter when necessary while keeping him in the bullpen when they have a scheduled off day to provide that extra rest.
Apr 19 2022Ashby is not scheduled to start during the weekend series against the Phillies, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby has made one start and two relief appearances so far this season, escaping with a 1.00 ERA through nine innings despite a 1.56 WHIP. He slotted between Adrian Houser and Eric Lauer last weekend, but it will be Houser on Saturday and Lauer on Sunday this week. It's possible the Brewers continue to fluctuate between a five-man and six-man rotation depending on whether or not they have a day off in a given week. Milwaukee has an off day this Thursday but won't have another one until May 2, so it's possible Ashby could be set for another start or two soon.
Apr 18 2022Ashby allowed three runs (none earned) on two hits and four walks while fanning four across four innings Sunday against the Cardinals. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby worked out of the bullpen in his first two appearances of the season but handled a starter-like workload in his previous outing, so it wasn't an issue to see him toss 74 pitches through four frames in this one. It remains to be seen if he'll stick in the rotation or if he'll return to the bullpen moving forward, though it wouldn't be a surprise if he alternates between both roles. After all, Milwaukee used a six-man rotation for prolonged stretches last season.
Apr 13 2022Ashby is scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Cardinals, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby worked out of the bullpen in his first two appearances of the season, with his last outing coming Monday against the Orioles. He threw 68 pitches over 3.1 scoreless frames in that contest, so he shouldn't face significant workload limitations in his first start of 2022. The Brewers utilized a six-man rotation through most of 2021, and a strong performance from Ashby this weekend could help push manager Craig Counsell to do so again this year.
Apr 8 2022Ashby (0-1) was the pitcher of record in Thursday's 5-4 loss to the Cubs after giving up one run on three hits and a walk over 1.2 innings of relief. He struck out one in the 41-pitch appearance. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: On Wednesday manager Craig Counsell said Ashby "will make starts this year," but the skipper noted that the Brewers are waiting to decide whether the 23-year-old will be part of a six-man rotation to begin the season, per Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Though he came on in relief of ace Corbin Burnes in the season opener, Ashby's workload won't necessary preclude him from making a start as soon as next week. After Friday's game in Chicago was postponed due to rain, the Brewers will have a stretch of 12 games in 12 days, so Ashby could be added to the rotation at some point during that period if the Brewers want to give each of their other five starters an extra rest day.
Mar 31 2022Ashby could open the year as a starter if the Brewers elect to use a six-man rotation, something the team has yet to decide on as of Thursday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As long as he can throw enough strikes, Ashby has a future as a starter, but his inexperience likely means he's the odd man out if the Brewers use a traditional five-man rotation. Even in that case, he's likely to make a good number of starts when other pitchers get injured, but the chance to stake his claim for a permanent spot with a strong early run in the rotation could do a lot for his fantasy value. The young lefty recorded an unremarkable 4.55 ERA in 31.2 innings as a swingman last season, but his 29.3 percent strikeout rate and 61.3 percent groundball rate showcased his big-league potential.
Mar 14 2022Brewers manager Craig Counsell confirmed Monday that Ashby will be stretched out for starting duty during spring training, Sophia Minnaert of Bally Sports Wisconsin reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Counsell didn't explicitly confirm that Ashby will open the season in a starting role, though he'll likely be the favorite for the final spot if the Brewers elect to run out a six-man rotation like they did for a large portion of the 2021 campaign. After enduring a rocky MLB debut last June against the Cubs, Ashby was highly effective in his subsequent 12 appearances (and three starts) the rest of the season, posting a 3.48 ERA (3.30 FIP) and a 24.4 K-BB% over 31 innings. He looks to be a high-upside dart throw in the later rounds of mixed-league drafts.
Sep 18 2021Ashby (3-0) allowed no runs on three hits and struck out five over three innings to pick up the win over the Cubs on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby entered to begin the sixth with the Brewers down a run and kept his squad in the game by firing three scoreless innings. The Brewers would end up scoring four runs in the eighth, awarding Ashby his third win since Aug. 29. The 23-year-old was knocked around for four runs by the Cubs in his MLB debut but since then has a 1.42 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 28:4 K:BB over 25.1 innings. He's made four starts this year but also remains a long-relief option if needed.
Sep 12 2021Ashby allowed a hit and struck out five over three shutout innings while earning a save over Cleveland on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby entered a Brewers blowout in the seventh inning and cruised through three scoreless innings to earn his first career save. The left-handed rookie lowered his ERA to 3.13 through 23 innings this season. Barring an injury to a starting pitcher, Ashby will likely stay in a long-relief role for the rest of the season.
Sep 4 2021Ashby covered 4.1 innings out of the bullpen in Friday's 15-4 loss to the Cardinals, giving up two runs on one hit and one walk while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Even though Brett Anderson (shoulder) was moved to the injured list Thursday, Ashby doesn't look like he'll receive the chance to stick in the rotation as a sixth starter, at least for the upcoming week. Because he was needed to eat innings in long relief Friday after Freddy Peralta's short start, Ashby is out of the mix to fill Anderson's next turn through the rotation, which was set to come Monday versus the Phillies.
Aug 30 2021Ashby (1-0) allowed two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out four over five innings in a win over the Twins on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sunday was Ashby's longest outing of the season and just the second time eclipsing four innings or more in five appearances this year. His only trouble came in the fourth, after allowing a leadoff walk to Rob Refsnyder, Ashby served up a two-run shot to Miguel Sano to make it a 6-2 ballgame. The 23-year-old had pitched 11 straight scoreless innings before the home run and now owns a 3.95 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 13:5 K:BB over 13.2 innings. He tentatively lines up for a home start against the Cardinals next weekend.
Aug 28 2021Ashby is listed as the starter for Sunday's game against the Twins, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby was recalled by the Brewers last weekend, and he allowed two hits and a walk while striking out four in two scoreless innings against the Nationals on Sunday. He has a 4.15 ERA in 8.2 innings this year and is in line to make his fourth start of the season in Sunday's series finale at Target Field.
Aug 25 2021Ashby could start Sunday against the Twins, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby had his contract selected by the Brewers over the weekend and could receive a look in the rotation a week later. He delivered two scoreless frames last Sunday and would be making a spot start for Freddy Peralta (shoulder), who remains on the injured list.
Aug 22 2021The Brewers recalled Ashby from Triple-A Nashville on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty fills the need for a fresh bullpen arm in Sunday's series finale against Washington. Ashby has rebounded from his disastrous debut to hold opponent scoreless in his last six innings of work, striking out five and walking none in that two-game span. He may be used in a long relief role if Adrian Houser doesn't last long in his first start since Aug. 3.
Aug 15 2021The Brewers optioned Ashby to Triple-A Nashville on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As anticipated, Ashby will head back to the minors after he was designated as the Brewers' 27th man ahead of Saturday's doubleheader with the Pirates. He picked up his third start of the season in the second game of the twin bill, tossing four scoreless innings en route to taking a no-decision in Milwaukee's 6-0 win. With Eric Lauer returning from the COVID-19 injured list to start Sunday's series finale and with Adrian Houser also closing in on a return from the COVID-19 IL, Ashby isn't expected to get any starting opportunities with Milwaukee in the near future.
Aug 14 2021Ashby blanked the Pirates over four innings Saturday, allowing just three hits and striking out four. He did not factor into the decison. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby started the back end of Saturday's doubleheader -- just his third major-league outing -- and was firmly in command, throwing 41 of his 58 pitches for strikes while limiting the Pirates to just three singles. Ashby was rocked in his major-league debut back in June, giving up seven runs (four earned), but he's spun six straight scoreless innings over two appearances since being recalled from Triple-A Nashville earlier this week. Ashby may not stick as a starter as Milwaukee's rotation gets healthier, but he's certainly making a case to have a role with the big-league club down the stretch.
Aug 11 2021The Brewers optioned Ashby to Triple-A Nashville on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As expected, Ashby will return to the minors after he was designated as the Brewers' 27th man for their doubleheader sweep of the Cubs on Tuesday. Though he started the second game of the twin bill, he acted as more of an opener in the contest, working two scoreless frames before giving way to the bullpen.
Jul 1 2021The Brewers optioned Ashby to Triple-A Nashville on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby put the Brewers in a 7-0 hole Wednesday in his MLB debut after he failed to escape the first inning, but Milwaukee spared him a loss by scoring 15 unanswered runs. The poor outing will still result in Ashby losing his spot on the active roster, as Nashville starter Alec Bettinger was called up in a corresponding move to aid a taxed Milwaukee bullpen that covered the final 8.1 innings of Wednesday's come-from-behind win over the Cubs.
Jun 30 2021Ashby allowed seven runs (four earned) on four hits and three walks in two-thirds of an inning Wednesday against the Cubs. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ashby, who was making his major-league debut, served as the opener in a bullpen game but couldn't get out of the first inning. He allowed seven baserunners, threw just 18 of his 39 pitches for strikes, and compounded his problems with a wild pitch that brought in one of the Chicago runs. Ashby escaped without the loss, however, after his teammates stormed back from a 7-0 deficit. It's unclear whether Ashby will get another look with the Brewers or head back to Triple-A Nashville.
Jun 29 2021Ashby will start Wednesday's series finale against the Cubs, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 23-year-old will make his big-league debut versus Chicago as Milwaukee finishes the series with a bullpen game. Ashby began the season as a starter at Triple-A Nashville and posted a 2.93 ERA across 27.2 innings, but he was shifted to the bullpen in early June to expedite his move to the majors as one of the organization's top prospects. He hasn't pitched more than two frames in nearly a month while working as a reliever and shouldn't be expected to pitch deep Wednesday, but he'll at least have the familiarity of starting the contest in his first MLB appearance.
Jun 10 2021Ashby moved to the bullpen at Triple-A Nashville to work as a multi-inning reliever in preparation for an eventual call-up, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The manager of the Nashville Sounds, Rick Sweet, also managed Brandon Woodruff, Corbin Burnes and Josh Hader as they made the move to relief in the minors before getting called up. Ashby logged a 1.02 ERA, 0.68 WHIP and 26 strikeouts in 17.2 innings over his final three starts at Triple-A but surrendered two earned runs on one hit and two walks while striking out three in two innings during his first appearance as a multi-inning reliever Wednesday. The Brewers will likely stretch Ashby back out in 2022, when he could compete for a spot in the big-league rotation.
Jun 5 2018The Brewers have selected Ashby with the 125th overall pick in the 2018 first-year player draft. The nephew of 14-year MLB veteran Andy Ashby, Aaron was arguably the top arm on the junior-college circuit this spring, leading all hurlers with a 18.8 K/9. The 20-year-old lefty was masterful at fooling hitters with an upper-80s-to-low-90s curveball, and his low-90s fastball also graded out as an above-average offering. While he excelled at inducing swings and misses, Ashby's unorthodox delivery was often difficult for him to repeat, resulting in occasionally wayward control that ran up his pitch counts. If the Brewers are unable to sign Ashby, he'll test himself against higher-quality competition in 2019 after signing with Tennessee.
