Sep 28 2021Hernandez will not make another start this season, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Mike Matheny said Tuesday that Hernandez won't start this week but will be available out of the bullpen. After he was originally expected to start Thursday versus Cleveland, it appears that Friday's start against the Tigers was his last. In that start he pitched five scoreless innings, lowering his ERA to 3.86 in 85.2 innings.
Sep 25 2021Hernandez didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 3-1 win over the Tigers, allowing two hits and three walks over five scoreless innings. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander fought his control, tossing only 51 of 89 pitches for strikes, but after escaping a bases-loaded jam in the first inning, Hernandez settled in before turning things over to the bullpen. The 24-year-old will take a 3.68 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 74:41 K:BB through 85.2 innings into what should be his final appearance of the season next week at home against Cleveland.
Sep 22 2021Hernandez and the Royals won't play Wednesday after their game against Cleveland was postponed due to inclement weather. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The two teams will make up the contest on a mutual off day next Monday. The Royals will most likely push all their starters back a day in the schedule as a result of the rainout, so Hernandez's next turn will presumably come Friday in Detroit.
Sep 19 2021Hernandez is now projected to make his next start Wednesday versus Cleveland, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander would have been available to pitch one game of Monday's doubleheader on regular rest, but he'll be pushed back a couple of days instead. Hernandez had shaky control in his last start Wednesday after he was moved up a day to make the outing. For the year, he's pitched to a 3.90 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 73:38 K:BB while posting a 6-2 record in 23 appearances (10 starts).
Sep 15 2021Hernandez (6-2) allowed seven earned runs on nine hits and four walks while striking out three across four innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Entering Wednesday's outing, Hernandez had allowed multiple runs in only two of his last eight starts and had completed at least six innings six times in that span. While he allowed only a solo home run and no additional extra-base hits, Hernandez walked four batters -- his highest total since July 24. Control of the strike zone is an emerging concern for Hernandez, as he has now surrendered 10 free passes across his last 16 innings of work. Despite the poor outing and some concerning trends in his skills, Hernandez likely deserves the benefit of the doubt heading into his next start based on his excellent results across the last two months.
Sep 9 2021Hernandez (6-1) allowed three hits and three walks with one strikeout in six innings to earn the win over Baltimore on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While the strikeout total was low, Hernandez managed to throw 55 of 89 pitches for strikes in the contest. The 24-year-old was excellent in recording his fourth quality start in his last six appearances (five starts). For the year, Hernandez has a 3.29 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 70:34 K:BB in 76.2 innings. He's allowed more than two runs in just two of 10 outings since the All-Star break, emerging as a reliable option in Kansas City's rotation. He lines up for a home start against Oakland next week.
Sep 4 2021Hernandez (5-1) allowed two runs on five hits and three walks over six innings Friday, striking out three and earning a win over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was an impressive outing for Hernandez who kept the White Sox scoreless through five innings and never gave up an extra-base hit. He coughed up two runs in the sixth but his offense already tacked on seven runs in support. Over his last seven outings, the 6-foot-4 righty is 4-0 with a 1.92 ERA and a 31:10 K:BB through 42.1 frames. Hernandez is lined up to face the Orioles on the road next week.
Aug 28 2021Hernandez hurled 5.2 innings in relief against the Mariners on Friday, allowing an unearned run on one hit and no walks while striking out six. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was originally slated to start Saturday's contest against Seattle, but he was instead called upon in relief Friday after starter Kris Bubic made it through just 4.1 frames. Hernandez was nearly unhittable in his 80-pitch appearance, retiring the first 14 hitters he faced before yielding an unearned run when a single and sacrifice fly plated Seattle's designated runner in the 10th inning. The 24-year-old has surrendered just one earned run while striking out 14 over his past 12.2 frames and will almost certainly rejoin the rotation next week.
Aug 23 2021Hernandez improved to 4-1 after holding the Cubs to one run while striking out eight across seven innings Sunday in the Royals' 9-1 victory. He scattered four hits and three walks in the 107-pitch start. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The seven-inning outing represented a new career high for Hernandez, who brought his ERA under 4.00 for the first time all season. The 24-year-old right-hander has put himself on the mainstream fantasy radar over his last five starts, submitting a 2.05 ERA and 0.98 WHIP while striking out 22 in 30.2 innings over that stretch. He'll get a favorable landing spot in his next projected start in Seattle on Saturday, when he'll face a Mariners offense that ranks in the bottom six in the majors in batting average (.234) and strikeout rate (24.4 percent) in the second half.
Aug 16 2021Hernandez allowed four runs on eight hits over six innings in Monday's win over Houston. He struck out one and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez coughed up an RBI single to Yordan Alvarez in the first inning but kept Houston's lineup quiet over the next three frames. He then allowed three runs in the fifth and sixth innings, including a pair of solo homers by Aledmys Diaz and Carlos Correa. It was the first time all season that the 24-year-old gave up multiple home runs in one outing. His ERA jumped to 4.33 alongside a 52:25 K:BB on the year. Hernandez is expected to face the Cubs in Chicago this weekend.
Aug 10 2021Hernandez allowed a run on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts in 6.2 innings versus the Yankees on Monday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 24-year-old has allowed just two runs in his last 17.2 innings as he's settled into a groove at the major-league level. Hernandez's lone run allowed Monday came on a seventh-inning Luke Voit single. After a rocky beginning this year, Hernandez has a 4.11 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 52:25 K:BB through 46 innings. He's pitched well enough to force manager Mike Matheny to maintain a six-man rotation with Brady Singer (shoulder) returning Wednesday. That leaves Hernandez in line to make his next start versus Houston next week.
Aug 5 2021Hernandez (3-1) earned the win over the White Sox on Wednesday, pitching five innings and allowing one run on two hits and two walks while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander needed 93 pitches to get through five frames, but he hung around long enough to take advantage of a generous offense and notch his second straight victory. Hernandez racked up a healthy 15 swinging strikes and tied his season high with six punchouts. Since moving into the rotation July 18, he has posted a 4.08 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 18:9 K:BB across 17.2 innings. Hernandez is tentatively slated to make his next start at home against the Yankees early next week.
Jul 30 2021Hernandez (2-1) earned the win Thursday against the White Sox after tossing six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and a walk while fanning four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez only has three starts on the year and all of them have come in July. This was the first time he tossed more than four complete frames and was his best outing of the season so far. The right-hander owns a 4.15 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP across five appearances this month.
Jul 25 2021Hernandez didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 9-8 win over the Tigers, surrendering five runs (four earned) on two hits and four walks over 2.2 innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a brutal performance by the veteran, who tossed only 27 of 53 pitches for strikes before getting the hook with the Royals in a 5-0 hole. Fortunately for Hernandez, the team rallied and he avoided the loss. He now has a 5.72 ERA and 1.66 WHIP through 28.1 innings with an untenable 15.9 percent walk rate, and he could get bumped from the rotation as soon as the Kansas City staff gets a little healthier.
Jul 19 2021Hernandez (1-1) allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out six over four innings in a loss to the Orioles on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez got through the first two innings without much of a sweat but had some trouble in the third. He ended up loading the bases before surrendering a two-run single to Ramon Urias. The 24-year-old got no run support from his team to potentially help erase the early deficit and was handed the loss in his first start of the year. He did show some promising stuff, as he missed plenty of bats and has 12 strikeouts over his last 7.2 innings. Hernandez owns a 4.91 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 36:17 K:BB over 25.2 innings. There hasn't been any update from manager Brandon Hyde on if Hernandez is expected to make another start or if he'll return to his initial role in the bullpen.
Jul 17 2021Hernandez will start Sunday's game against the Orioles, Lynn Worthy of The Kansas City Star reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The righty has a 4.98 ERA and 30:15 K:BB in 21.2 innings this season, but none of his 12 appearances has been a start. Hernandez did make three starts in 2020, so Sunday won't be an entirely unfamiliar experience for the 24-year-old. He enters an enticing matchup against Baltimore's underwhelming lineup.
Jul 11 2021Hernandez's scheduled start will not occur after Sunday's game in Cleveland was postponed. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The righty's first start of 2021 will have to wait until after the All-Stat break, if it happens at all. As a reliever, Hernandez has pitched to a 4.98 ERA and 30:15 K:BB in 21.2 innings of work. In his most recent appearance July 6, he allowed one run in 3.2 innings while striking out six batters.
Jul 10 2021Hernandez will start on the mound during Sunday's game against Cleveland, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez has pitched exclusively in relief thus far this season, with six of his 12 appearances lasting two or more innings. He most recently pitched 3.2 innings July 6, so he should have the ability to work into the fourth or fifth if he's somewhat efficient Sunday. The right-hander has allowed just one earned run across his last 7.2 innings dating back to June 25.
Jul 4 2021Hernandez has not allowed a run in his last three outings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander has covered four innings in those three scoreless outings. It's the first time all season Hernandez has kept runs off the board in consecutive appearances. He's struggled to a 6.23 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 24:15 K:BB across 18 innings this season, mainly in a low-leverage role.
Jun 16 2021Hernandez allowed two hits and struck out four over three scoreless innings in Wednesday's 6-5 loss to Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Starter Brady Singer left Wednesday's game with a shoulder injury after three innings, but Hernandez was able to deliver solid work in a bulk-relief outing. The 24-year-old hasn't been great at the major-league level in 2021, posting a 6.00 ERA, 1.83 WHIP and 17:8 K:BB across 12 innings. He'll likely remain in a low-leverage role unless he can put together more successful outings like he did Wednesday.
Jun 9 2021The Royals recalled Hernandez to the big-league roster Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The righty has struggled considerably in four relief appearances this season, having allowed multiple runs in three of his four appearances en route to a 8.22 ERA. In his only scoreless outing, Hernandez walked three batters without recording an out. Regardless, he's being called upon once again to provide some added bullpen depth.
May 30 2021Hernandez was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez was promoted to the big-league club Friday and allowed three runs (two earned) over 4.1 innings of long relief during Saturday's contest. Edward Olivares was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move.
May 29 2021Hernandez allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks with six strikeouts in 4.1 innings versus Minnesota on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander worked behind starter Ervin Santana, who gave up three runs in three innings. Hernandez is expected to work in a long-relief role in his second stint in the majors this year, although he stretched out as a starter with Triple-A Omaha prior to his callup. It's unclear if the 24-year-old will have a chance to earn a spot in the rotation while Danny Duffy (forearm) is out. Hernandez has a 7.04 ERA, 2.35 WHIP and 11:8 K:BB across 7.2 innings this season.
May 28 2021Hernandez was recalled by the Royals on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez was with the team for the first two weeks of the season but didn't see the field often, allowing four runs in 3.1 innings across three relief appearances. He'll likely fill a low-leverage role again this time around. Josh Staumont (knee) landed on the injured list in a corresponding move.
Apr 14 2021Hernandez was optioned to the Royals' alternate training site Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez had a shaky start to the 2021 campaign and will now head to the team's alternate camp to work things out. The right-hander made three relief appearances for the Royals to begin the year and allowed four runs on six hits and five walks while striking out five in 3.1 innings. Right-hander Josh Staumont was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list in a corresponding move.
Apr 9 2021Hernandez allowed two runs on three hits and walk in one-third of an inning in Thursday's 6-0 loss to the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez began the sixth inning, but allowed four of the five batters he faced to get on base. He was done after a two-run single allowed to Adam Eaton, and Josh Staumont went on to pitch 1.2 scoreless innings. Hernandez worked in long relief in his previous outing, earning a win on Opening Day versus the Rangers. The 24-year-old's role hasn't been clearly defined yet, but it appears he's been passed over for a spot in the rotation by Jakob Junis. Without much of a chance of joining the closer conversation, Hernandez will carry minimal fantasy value.
