Apr 21 2025The Guardians designated McKenzie for assignment Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie has struggled in a mop-up role this season, allowing seven runs with a 4:7 K:BB over 5.2 innings. The 27-year-old holds just a 5.46 ERA, 21.2 percent strikeout rate and 15.6 percent walk rate since the start of the 2023 campaign and has dealt with arm issues during that stretch. McKenzie comes with team control through 2027, but his lack of minor-league options is likely to hurt his appeal on waivers.
Apr 6 2025McKenzie allowed three runs on three hits, four walks and a wild pitch Saturday while striking out three over 1.2 innings in a 10-4 loss to the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt hoped the right-hander could provide some length after starter Tanner Bibee was chased with none out in the fifth inning, but McKenzie did nothing to quiet the Angels. The Guardians have been waiting for the 27-year-old to rediscover his 2022 form (2.96 ERA as a starter), but to no avail. He was moved to the bullpen after a rocky Cactus League season in which he allowed 10 runs, 15 hits and eight walks over 13 innings.
Mar 23 2025The Guardians announced Sunday that McKenzie will begin the season operating as a reliever, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander had a 7.50 ERA and 10:7 K:BB over 12 innings during spring training, while Logan Allen's 1.89 ERA helped him earn a rotation spot. McKenzie could still see some spot starts this year, but he'll likely need to perform better than his 5.11 ERA over 75.2 regular-season innings in 2024 to get an extended look in the rotation.
Mar 21 2025McKenzie walked two, hit a batter and struck out two over one scoreless inning of relief in Friday's spring game against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie, who made three Cactus League starts prior to Friday's relief appearance, managed to avoid damage despite loading the bases. He entered camp as one of several options competing for a spot in the rotation, but the right-hander's 8.18 ERA and location issues seemingly have the Guardians moving him to the bullpen.
Mar 16 2025McKenzie allowed four runs on six hits while striking out four over 4.2 innings in Saturday's spring start against Kansas City. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie gave up a lot of loud contact, including two home runs, and did nothing to enhance his bid for the final spot in the rotation during his fourth Cactus League start. The right-hander has allowed 10 runs (8.18 ERA) on 15 hits and five walks with eight strikeouts over 11 spring innings. The one thing going for McKenzie is that he's out of minor-league options. Logan Allen (1.88 ERA, 14.1 spring innings) and Joey Cantillo (7.45, 9.2 IP) are also in the mix for the final rotation spot, but each has options remaining.
Mar 11 2025McKenzie allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out three over 3.2 innings in Monday's Cactus League start against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There was a lot of traffic during McKenzie's third Cactus League start, but Monday's mixed-result effort was much better than his previous outing. The right-hander walked five and retired just two of seven batters during his second spring start 12 days ago. The seven hits suggest command was inconsistent, but McKenzie amassed 13 whiffs among his 60 offerings, indicating he can be effective when locating. The improvement from his second spring outing keeps him alive in the battle for a spot in the rotation. He was among the five starters in the projected Opening Day roster compiled by Mandy Bell and Tim Stebbins of MLB.com.
Feb 23 2025McKenzie allowed one run on one hit and struck out one over two innings in Saturday's spring game against the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie is looking to turn the page on a disappointing 2024, when he finished the season at Triple-A Columbus. He mainly used his four-seamer, which was noticeably faster than the 91.1 mph it averaged last season, and gave up a lot of hard contact, including a first-inning home run to Elly De La Cruz. It was an efficient outing for the right-hander, who got several quick outs during his first Cactus League outing.
Feb 22 2025McKenzie will start Saturday's spring opener against the Reds, Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It will be a big moment for McKenzie, who teased the Guardians with a strong 2022 before injuries, including an elbow issue, limited him to four starts the following season. He was able to avoid Tommy John surgery but spent the second half of 2024 in the minors. Reports on his bullpen and live BP sessions on the back fields track his fastball velocity up to 95 mph, which is higher than the 92.5 mph he posted during the healthy 2022 campaign. The right-hander is one of several starters competing for a job behind ace Tanner Bibee.
Nov 21 2024McKenzie agreed to terms on a one-year, $1.95 million contract with the Guardians on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie spent the first half of 2024 with the Guardians, posting a 5.11 ERA and 1.56 WHIP across 75.2 innings (16 starts). He continued to struggle to the tune of a 5.23 ERA after being demoted to Triple-A Columbus in June. Despite his poor performance, the 27-year-old righty will receive a $350,000 raise in 2025, but he should remain off fantasy managers' radar until he's able to regain command over his pitches.
Jun 30 2024The Guardians optioned McKenzie to Triple-A Columbus on Sunday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Through the first three months of the 2024 season, the historically injury prone McKenzie has enjoyed a clean bill of health, but he's performed well below expectations for both the Guardians and fantasy managers alike. After failing to escape the third inning while giving up five earned runs in his most recent start Friday in Kansas City, McKenzie now holds a 5.11 ERA and 1.56 WHIP over 75.2 innings on the season. The Guardians will send the right-hander to the minors with the hope that he'll be able to return to form and eventually slot back into the big-league rotation. Gavin Williams (elbow) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list and will fill McKenzie's spot in the rotation during the upcoming week.
Jun 28 2024McKenzie (3-5) took the loss Friday in Kansas City, allowing five runs on five hits and three walks over 2.1 innings with three strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Cleveland right-hander closed out a tough month with this performance, failing to pitch past the third inning for the third consecutive start. Over five June starts, McKenzie posted a 9.33 ERA, 2.13 WHIP and 19:15 K:BB across 18.1 innings. The 26-year-old is currently scheduled to face the White Sox at home in his next outing.
Jun 23 2024McKenzie tossed three innings, allowing three runs on three hits and four walks while striking out six batters in Sunday's 6-5 win over the Blue Jays. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was challenged early versus Toronto, giving up a two-run home run to Vladimir Guerrero in the top of the first inning. He later gave up a leadoff homer to Spencer Horwitz in the third, which was ultimately his final inning on the mound. McKenzie failed to pitch past the third inning for the second consecutive start Sunday, throwing just 41 of his 74 total pitches for strikes, while the four walks matched his total from his loss Tuesday versus Seattle. The 26-year-old will look to get back on track in his next start, which is tentatively set to come Friday on the road against the Royals.
Jun 18 2024McKenzie (3-4) took the loss Tuesday against Seattle, allowing four runs on three hits and four walks over 2.1 innings without recording a strikeout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After holding the Mariners scoreless through his first two innings, McKenzie allowed five of the first six batters to reach safely in the third, ultimately allowing four runs before the Guardians turned to the bullpen. The 26-year-old McKenzie has struggled of late -- he hasn't made it through six innings in five straight starts, posting a 7.04 ERA in that span. Overall, his ERA is up to 4.48 on the season with a 1.46 WHIP and 65:42 K:BB across 70.1 innings. He'll look to right the ship in his next outing, currently scheduled for this weekend at home versus Toronto.
Jun 12 2024McKenzie (3-3) picked up the win Tuesday, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks over 5.1 innings in a 5-3 victory over the Reds. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander got a quick hook after 75 pitches (43 strikes) with the Guardians ahead 3-2, but the bullpen and offense were able to secure McKenzie's first win since April 19. He's failed to complete six innings in any of his last four trips to the mound, but on the bright side, he kept the ball in the yard Tuesday after serving up eight homers over his three prior outings. McKenzie will take a 4.10 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 65:38 K:BB through 68 innings into his next start, which lines up to come at home early next week against the Mariners.
Jun 5 2024McKenzie came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 8-5 win over the Royals, surrendering five runs on nine hits -- including three home runs -- and two walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He was taken deep twice by Bobby Witt and once by Hunter Renfroe as McKenzie dug a 5-0 hole through four innings, but the Guardians were able to climb out of it. The right-hander's suddenly having trouble keeping the ball in the park -- after serving up only six homers over his first nine starts of the season, McKenzie's coughed up multiple long balls in three straight outings and has a 7.04 ERA over that stretch. He'll try to turn things around in his next trip to the mound, which is scheduled to come on the road this weekend in Miami.
May 28 2024McKenzie gave up four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out nine over five innings in a no-decision versus the Rockies on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kris Bryant and Elehuris Montero each tagged McKenzie for a two-run home run. Despite those homers, McKenzie left the game in line for the win before the Guardians' bullpen faltered in the sixth inning. The right-hander had limited opponents to three runs or fewer in each of his last seven outings before his step back Tuesday. McKenzie is at a 3.77 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 54:34 K:BB over 57.1 innings across 11 starts. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Royals in a tough divisional matchup.
May 22 2024McKenzie did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Mets, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie didn't appear to have his best stuff Wednesday, as he'd allow three solo homers before departing with a 3-0 deficit in the sixth inning. However, the Guardians would rally for six unanswered runs in an eventual victory, sparing McKenzie the loss. Still, it's the first time in seven starts that McKenzie's allowed more than two earned runs -- he came into the day with a 2.10 ERA over his prior six outings. Overall, the 26-year-old right-hander sports a 3.44 ERA with a 1.34 WHIP and 45:31 K:BB over 10 starts (52.1 innings) this season. McKenzie's next start is currently lined up for early next week against the Rockies in Colorado.
May 17 2024McKenzie did not factor into the decision Friday against the Twins, allowing one run on two hits and four walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie posted his second consecutive quality start with the effort Friday. The Cleveland right-hander has tossed six straight starts allowing two or fewer runs while generating five or more strikeouts, producing a 2.12 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 35:19 K:BB in 34 innings over that time. McKenzie is scheduled to face the Mets at home in his next outing.
May 11 2024McKenzie (2-3) took the loss against the White Sox on Saturday, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks while striking out five batters over 6.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was tagged for two runs (one of which was unearned) in the second inning but otherwise kept Chicago off the scoreboard in his second-longest outing of the season. Cleveland was able to give the right-hander only one run of support, however, resulting in his third loss of the season. McKenzie began the campaign by giving up 11 runs (nine earned) over his initial 13 innings, but he's yielded just seven earned runs across 27.2 frames since to lower his ERA to a respectable 3.54.
May 6 2024McKenzie didn't factor into the decision Monday against Detroit, allowing one run on three hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie settled in nicely after allowing a solo home run to Riley Greene on his first pitch of the day, striking out three straight to close out the first and keeping the Tigers from adding on more runs. He's now allowed two or fewer runs and struck out at least six batters in four consecutive starts, bringing his ERA to 3.97 through 34 innings. However, McKenzie still appears to have the training wheels on after missing most of the 2023 season with elbow and shoulder injuries, as he's been kept under 85 pitches in five of his seven starts this year. McKenzie is tentatively scheduled to face the White Sox in Chicago on Saturday.
May 2 2024McKenzie did not factor into the decision in a win over the Astros on Wednesday, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk over seven innings while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was highly effective Wednesday despite getting down in the count early and often, striking out at least six batters for the third consecutive start, with five of those strikeouts coming on his curveball. The right-hander issued only one free pass in the contest, which marked a season best, while also going seven innings for the first time in the early campaign. McKenzie has not allowed more than two runs in any of his last three starts after surrendering a season-high five runs against the Yankees back on April 13.
Apr 25 2024McKenzie did not factor into the decision Thursday against Boston, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie had to deal with traffic throughout Thursday's outing, though he was ultimately able to mitigate the damage thanks to a season-high seven strikeouts. He'd fail to qualify for a win, however, only making it through four innings after throwing 75 pitches, as Cleveland continues to monitor the 26-year-old's workload after he made just four starts in an injury-plagued 2023 campaign. Overall, McKenzie is 2-2 with a 4.91 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 18:17 K:BB through four starts (22 innings) this season. He's currently lined up for a road matchup with the Astros in his next start Wednesday.
Apr 20 2024McKenzie (2-2) earned the win Friday against Oakland, allowing one earned run on three hits and three walks while striking out six batters across five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It seemed McKenzie would be in for another rough outing once he surrendered a leadoff home run to Abraham Toro on just the third pitch of the game, but the 26-year-old right-hander was able to keep Oakland's bats quiet for five innings after that point. His six strikeouts were more than he had accumulated all season heading into Friday's contest, though he still holds an ugly 11:15 K:BB. McKenzie is tentatively scheduled to make his next start at home against Boston on Thursday.
Apr 14 2024McKenzie took the loss in game two of a doubleheader against the Yankees on Saturday, allowing six runs (five earned) on four hits and six walks while striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie walked the first two batters he faced before going on to surrender two runs in the opening frame, though only one of those would count against him due to a fielding error on the part of Andres Gimenez. The right-hander was then able to get through the next two innings unscathed before once again issuing back-to-back walks to lead off the fourth, eventually leading to four more runs coming home for New York. McKenzie issued a season-high six walks in the contest and now holds a putrid 5:12 K:BB early in the campaign. He's also failed to make it through five innings in two of his first three starts.
Apr 8 2024McKenzie (1-1) earned the victory against the White Sox on Monday, allowing no runs on three hits and four walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was not the cleanest outing for McKenzie, who allowed seven baserunners, including four free passes, but he was able to keep the hapless White Sox lineup in check to earn his first win of the season. However, after making only four starts last season due to lingering shoulder and elbow issues, a scoreless, healthy outing can't be considered anything but a plus for the talented right-hander, who will be looking to top 120 innings for just the second time in his five-year career. He's tentatively slated to make his next start at home during next weekend's series against the Yankees.
Apr 7 2024McKenzie and the Guardians won't face the Twins on Sunday due to inclement weather in Minnesota, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The two teams are scheduled to make up the game as part of a split doubleheader Aug. 9. As a result of the postponement, McKenzie's next start will likely just be pushed back a day, so expect him to take the hill for Monday's series opener versus the White Sox in Cleveland.
Apr 1 2024McKenzie (0-1) took the loss against Seattle on Monday, allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out two batters over 3.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie breezed through his first frame without any trouble, but a pair of one-out walks in the second set the stage for the Mariners' four-run inning. The right-hander bounced back with a perfect third frame before departing with one out and the bases loaded in the fourth. It wasn't a promising campaign debut for McKenzie, as he notched just seven swinging strikes among his 78 pitches and punched out only two batters. The 26-year-old is attempting to get back on track after being limited to 16 big-league innings last season due to injuries.
Mar 7 2024McKenzie struck out two batters, walked none and allowed one hit over two scoreless innings Wednesday versus the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was a little delayed in making his spring debut, but it was an encouraging start. The right-hander is projected to be near the front of the Guardians' rotation in 2024. He pitched just 16 innings in 2023, posting a 5.06 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 16:13 K:BB while battling shoulder and elbow injuries. That health history is a concern, but McKenzie was good enough in 2022 (2.96 ERA, 0.95 WHIP) to be a fascinating option for fantasy managers.
Jan 22 2024McKenzie said at the Guardians' FanFest event Saturday that he's "feeling great" physically, Leah Doherty of Cleveland 19 News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was limited to just four starts for the Guardians in 2023 due to shoulder and elbow problems, but he finished the season healthy and has thrown without issue this winter. The right-hander noted that he's thrown more this offseason than he normally would in order to make up for lost time. McKenzie represents a buy-low option for fantasy managers, but he will remain a health risk heading into 2024.
Jan 11 2024McKenzie signed a one-year, $1.6 million contract with the Guardians on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was limited to only 16 innings in 2023 due to an elbow injury, though he did end the campaign healthy. Assuming he can get through spring training unscathed, he should pair up with Shane Bieber as the two veteran leaders of the Guardians' rotation in 2024.
Oct 1 2023McKenzie (0-3) took the loss Saturday, allowing one run on three hits and three walks over 4.1 innings against the Tigers. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie went 1-2-3 through the first two innings before giving up a leadoff single and a walk in the third, though he was able to pitch his way out of the jam. He would allow one run to come across in the next frame and would eventually be relieved by Nick Sandlin with one out in the fifth. The right-hander has now lost his first two starts since returning from the injured list (elbow), registering a 6.00 ERA and a dreadful 1:9 K:BB over that stretch.
Sep 24 2023McKenzie (0-2) took the loss Sunday, allowing three runs on one hit, six walks and no strikeouts over 1.2 innings against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie (elbow) was making just his third start of the season and first since June 10. He could never find his command in walking six batters while throwing just 19 of 52 pitches for strikes. Following a promising first inning, he gave up three runs in the second and was pulled after a third consecutive walk allowed the third run to cross the plate. The most important development for McKenzie, who had a 2.96 ERA over 191.1 innings in 2022, is that he appears to have left this start healthy. If the Guardians decide to roll him out for one more start, it will likely take place next weekend in Detroit.
Sep 23 2023McKenzie (elbow) will be activated from the 60-day injured list to start Sunday's game against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He'll be the second Guardians starting pitcher this weekend to make his return from a lengthy absence due to an elbow injury, after Shane Bieber returned from the 60-day IL on Friday to cover five innings in a win over Baltimore. Like Bieber, McKenzie is expected to face a rough limit of around five innings and 80 pitches while he makes his first start for the big club since June 10 and just his third of the season. After Sunday's outing, McKenzie will likely line up for one final start during the Guardians' season-closing series in Detroit next weekend.
Sep 20 2023McKenzie (elbow) worked 3.2 innings and struck out two while giving up three earned runs on three hits and one walk in the second start of his rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Columbus. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie tossed 62 pitches (37 strikes) in the rehab outing, with his fastball topping out at 94.4 miles per hour, per SI.com. Though McKenzie gave up two home runs in the start, he looked healthy and turned in velocity readings that were roughly in line with what he had been posting prior to landing on the shelf June 17 with a right elbow sprain. McKenzie is expected to return from the 60-day injured list to make his next start with the Guardians, possibly as soon as Sunday's series finale with the Orioles. Whenever he's activated, McKenzie will likely be capped around 80 pitches in his next start.
Sep 19 2023McKenzie (elbow) is set to make the second start of his rehab assignment Tuesday at Triple-A Columbus, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After covering three innings and tossing 44 pitches in his first rehab outing last Wednesday with Double-A Akron, McKenzie will shift his rehab assignment to the Guardians' top affiliate this week for what will likely be his final start in the minors before he returns from the 60-day injured list. The Guardians are targeting McKenzie for around 65 pitches Tuesday, and if all goes well, he could slot back into the big-league rotation as soon as this Sunday versus the Orioles. McKenzie has been on the shelf since mid-June with a right UCL sprain.
Sep 15 2023McKenzie (elbow) struck out four and gave up one run on one hit and one walk over three innings in his rehab start Wednesday with Double-A Akron. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie tossed 44 pitches in the rehab start in what was his first appearance at any level since he was shut down in late June with a right UCL sprain. Both he and Shane Bieber -- who made a 3.2-inning rehab start with Akron on Tuesday -- appear to be on similar timelines for returns from the 60-day injured list, though both hurlers are likely to require at least one more rehab start or simulated game before being activated. Though McKenzie is tracking toward a return to the Cleveland rotation at some point in the back end of September, his innings and pitch counts could be monitored carefully down the stretch. The Guardians face long odds to unseat the Twins atop the AL Central standings and may not be incentivized to fully unleash McKenzie and Bieber in the final two weeks of the season if a playoff spot is out of reach.
Sep 13 2023McKenzie (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Akron on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie will be making his first appearance at any level since he was diagnosed with a sprained right UCL in mid-June. The right-hander also dealt with a teres major muscle strain this season, as he's been limited to just two starts for the Guardians and three rehab starts. Cleveland is still hoping to get McKenzie back before the end of the season, though if that happens, he could be subject to a more regulated workload than the Guardians' other starting pitchers.
Sep 5 2023McKenzie (elbow) completed a bullpen session at Progressive Field on Monday and has been cleared to face live hitters at High-A Lake County on Friday, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie and Shane Bieber (elbow) were both cleared to advance to the next phase of their respective recovery programs after the two experienced no issues during their bullpen sessions Monday. Bieber is scheduled to face hitters Thursday before McKenzie does the same Friday, and if all goes well, the right-handers could get the green light to begin minor-league rehab assignments the following week. Per Brian Dulik of the Associated Press, Francona said McKenzie and Bieber will both be activated from the 60-day injured list once they're capable of handling 85-pitch workloads. Francona offered up Sept. 20 as a tentative target date for both pitchers' reinstatements.
Aug 22 2023McKenzie (elbow) has yet to resume throwing off a mound but had increased his throwing distance off flat ground to 105 feet as of Thursday, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie appears to be only slightly behind Shane Bieber in their respective recoveries from elbow injuries, as Bieber has stretched out his throwing distance to 120 feet. Both pitchers are tracking toward returns from the 60-day injured list at some point in September, but any setback along the way would put McKenzie at risk of being shuttered for the remainder of the season. McKenzie is in the midst of his second IL stint of the season after he opened the campaign on the shelf while recovering from a right teres major muscle strain suffered late in spring training.
Aug 7 2023McKenzie (elbow) hasn't experienced any setbacks since he resumed playing catch July 28, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to the report, McKenzie was able to play catch on five consecutive days without issue, a good sign as he continues his recovery from a right UCL sprain. He remains hopeful to pitch again for the big club in 2023, but until he reaches the point in his rehab where he's facing live hitters, the Guardians likely won't offer up a concrete target date for his return from the 60-day injured list. Based on where he currently stands in his rehab program, McKenzie is likely at least a month away from rejoining the Cleveland rotation in a best-case scenario.
Jul 6 2023The Guardians transferred McKenzie (elbow) to the 60-day injured list Thursday, Chris Assenheimer of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The move ensures McKenzie will be out until at least mid-August, but chances are he will remain out past then. McKenzie will remain shut down from throwing for another three weeks before potentially beginning a throwing program with the goal of returning late in the season. His transfer opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for Chris Vallimont, who was acquired Thursday from Baltimore in exchange for cash considerations.
Jul 3 2023McKenzie (elbow) will remain shut down for three more weeks, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie has already been shut down for more than two weeks after being diagnosed with partially torn right UCL in mid-June. He will attempt to rehab the injury with rest, with the goal of starting a throwing program later this month and eventually returning late in the season. Of course, Tommy John surgery is always a possibility with this type of injury if rest and rehab doesn't do the trick.
Jun 20 2023McKenzie (elbow) will be shut down from throwing for "several weeks," Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie has a UCL sprain in his right elbow and was placed on the injured list Saturday. He will receive a second opinion, but McKenzie estimated it could be a month before he starts throwing again, likely pushing his return into August.
Jun 17 2023McKenzie was placed on the 15-day injured list by the Guardians on Saturday with a right elbow sprain, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was scratched from his start Friday versus the Diamondbacks, and he's unsurprisingly headed to the injured list. There's no timetable for when the right-hander will be able to return, but he'll miss at least two weeks while recovering. McKenzie has only been able to make two starts so far this year, as he missed the first two months of the season with shoulder issues.
Jun 16 2023McKenzie is getting an MRI in Phoenix on Friday on his right elbow, Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Guardians will make a decision on whether he'll be able to return to the mound in the coming days or if he'll need a stint on the 15-day injured list after the results are released. Mckenzie was scratched from his start versus the Diamondbacks on Friday, and it's worth pointing out the right-hander missed the first couple of months of the season due to injury, as well. There should be an update on McKenzie's availability in the coming days.
Jun 10 2023McKenzie (0-1) took the loss against Houston on Saturday, allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five batters over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie dazzled in his season debut against Minnesota last Sunday, allowing just one hit while striking out 10 batters over five scoreless innings. He looked far more mortal Saturday, surrendering three runs in the first frame and two more in the fourth en route to the loss. On the plus side, McKenzie missed plenty of bats in inducing 15 swinging strikes, so there's evidence to suggest that his previous start wasn't a mirage. The right-hander is tentatively lined up for a road start in Arizona his next time out.
Jun 5 2023McKenzie mowed down the Twins' lineup, allowing just one hit and a walk while striking out 10 over five innings. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie's 2023 debut was certainly one to remember. It was his seventh career double-digit strikeout game, and he became just the fifth pitcher in MLB history to throw five innings or less while allowing zero runs, striking out 10 or more and allowing 1 or fewer hits and walks. His slider was noticeably dominant in the outing. He got seven swings on it and six swing and misses for an absurd 86 percent whiff rate. It's obviously coming from a very small sample size, but fantasy managers who opted to hold on to McKenzie after the preseason injury news certainly seem to be rewarded. The 25-year-old will look to keep rolling into a home start against the Astros next weekend.
Jun 4 2023The Guardians reinstated McKenzie (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Sunday in Minnesota, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie will be making his season debut after missing the first two months while recovering from a right teres major muscle strain. The right-hander was outstanding during the 2022 season with a 2.96 ERA over 191 innings, and while there may be a bit of rust to shake off, it's reasonable to expect him to be a strong fantasy option for the remainder of the 2023 campaign. He logged 10.1 innings over the course of his three-start rehab assignment with Triple-A Columbus, pitching to a 4.35 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 13:4 K:BB.
Jun 1 2023McKenzie (shoulder) is set to join the Guardians' starting rotation Sunday at Minnesota, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie suffered a teres major muscle strain in his final Cactus League start this spring and wound up missing the first two months of the 2023 regular season, but he's ready to rock now following three minor-league rehab outings with Triple-A Columbus. The young right-hander broke out to the tune of a 2.96 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 190:44 K:BB over 191.1 regular-season innings last year with Cleveland.
May 31 2023McKenzie (shoulder) hurled three innings of one-run baseball while allowing one hit and one walk with three strikeouts during a rehab appearance with Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was scheduled to work deeper in the contest, but unfortunately the outing was shortened by rain delays. While he wasn't able to continue on the mound, the right-hander was able to throw a simulated inning in the batting cage while also getting up to 85 pitches with a bullpen session after the rain stopped, per Joe Noga of The Cleveland Plain Dealer. McKenzie has missed all of 2023 while recovering from his shoulder injury, but assuming everything checked out well from this outing, there's a good chance the right-hander next takes the mound for the Guardians.
May 29 2023McKenzie (shoulder) is scheduled to make a third rehab start with Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday, Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Guardians manager Terry Francona said he's hoping for McKenzie to get stretched out to around 85 pitches Tuesday in what would likely be the right-hander's final rehab start before he makes his return from the 60-day injured list. McKenzie, who has been on the shelf since suffering a right teres major muscle strain during his final start of spring training March 26, covered 4.1 innings and 68 pitches in his most recent rehab start with Columbus this past Thursday, striking out six while allowing four earned runs on six hits and two walks. With both McKenzie and Aaron Civale (oblique) seemingly due to return from the IL within the next week or two, the Guardians may have to move one of Logan Allen or Tanner Bibee to the bullpen or back to the minors to clear up two spots in the rotation.
May 27 2023McKenzie (shoulder) covered 4.1 innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six in 4.1 innings in his second rehab start Thursday with Triple-A Columbus. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After striking out four in three scoreless frames in his first rehab outing with Columbus back on May 20, McKenzie looked less sharp while returning to the hill five days later. He still spotted just under two-thirds of his 68 pitches for strikes and made a good amount of bats miss, but the pair of walks and a pair of home runs allowed were blemishes on his final line. The Guardians haven't clarified whether McKenzie will require one last rehab start, or if he'll be ready to return from the 60-day injured list to make his 2023 debut for the big club during Cleveland's three-game series in Baltimore to begin the upcoming week.
May 24 2023McKenzie (shoulder) is scheduled to make the second start of his rehab assignment Thursday with Triple-A Columbus, Joe Noga of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Thursday's outing could be the last of McKenzie's rehab assignment after he looked sharp in his 2023 debut with Columbus this past Saturday, when he covered three scoreless innings (52 pitches) and struck out four while allowing only three baserunners. If McKenzie can push his workload up to the 70-to-80 range Thursday, the Guardians would likely be comfortable with bringing him back from the 60-day injured list as soon next Tuesday. Aaron Civale (oblique) also looks like he'll be ready to return from the 15-day IL within the next week, so unless Cleveland expands the rotation to six men, two of Hunter Gaddis, Logan Allen and Tanner Bibee could end up losing out on starting roles.
May 17 2023McKenzie (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Columbus on Saturday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie is slated to throw three innings and/or 50 pitches in his first game action since being diagnosed with a right teres major strain in late March. He'll undoubtedly need at least one additional rehab start after that and perhaps more given how much time he's missed.
May 15 2023McKenzie (shoulder) threw a bullpen session that went well Thursday, and he's expected to throw one more before stepping away from his rehab to attend his brother's graduation Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie will then return to Cleveland to be evaluated and scheduled for a rehab assignment. The 25-year-old is recovering from a right teres major strain, and he'll likely need multiple rehab starts before he is cleared to return to the major-league roster. He's eligible to return from the 60-day injured list May 29, but it is possible his rehab may extend beyond that date depending on how he performs and when the assignment starts.
May 4 2023McKenzie (shoulder) threw another bullpen session Tuesday in New York, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The side session was McKenzie's second since he exited his final Cactus League start in late March with a right teres major muscle strain. After throwing a 20-pitch session last weekend consisting entirely of fastballs, it's unclear whether McKenzie was able to incorporate any breaking pitches Tuesday. The Guardians haven't formally outlined McKenzie's next steps, but he's expected to report to the organization's spring training facility in Arizona to continue his throwing progression before eventually heading out on a minor-league rehab assignment. McKenzie is first eligible to come off the 60-day IL on May 29, and that date still appears to be a realistic target for his return.
Mar 30 2023McKenzie (arm) was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to March 27. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was shut down from throwing for two weeks after being diagnosed with a teres major muscle strain Monday, so his move to the injured list was inevitable. McKenzie is without a clear timeline for his return beyond the initial shutdown period, but he shouldn't be expected back until at least mid-May given the time required to build his arm back up.
Mar 26 2023McKenzie was removed from Sunday's Cactus League start against the Reds as a precautionary measure due to right arm tightness, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old delivered a scoreless first inning during his final start of spring training Sunday but never returned to the mound. Any arm injury is a concerning development -- especially this late in spring training -- which leaves McKenzie's availability for the start of the regular season up in the air.
Mar 6 2023McKenzie allowed three runs on three hits and three walks over 1.2 innings in Sunday's Grapefruit League game versus the Diamondbacks. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: "He had trouble leveraging his fastball down," manager Terry Francona said after the game. McKenzie's control issues can likely be attributed to just an off game -- he posted an excellent 2.1 BB/9 and 0.95 WHIP while adding 190 strikeouts in 191.1 innings a year ago. The Guardians are expected to have Shane Bieber start Opening Day, but McKenzie shouldn't be too far behind him in the rotation.
Oct 13 2022McKenzie is scheduled to start Game 3 of the Guardians' ALDS matchup with the Yankees on Saturday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was on track to take the ball Friday, but Game 2 of the series was delayed a day by rain, and Cleveland will simply push both Shane Bieber and McKenzie back a day.
Oct 3 2022McKenzie allowed one run on four hits over five frames against the Royals on Monday. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie gave up a run in the third inning but otherwise worked a pretty clean outing. The 25-year-old righty ended his regular season by allowing three or fewer runs in his final 11 starts, posting a 2.27 ERA through 71.1 innings during that stretch. On the year, McKenzie registered an impressive 2.96 ERA with a 190:44 K:BB across 31 appearances (30 starts).
Sep 28 2022McKenzie allowed one earned run on three hits and a walk while striking out six across six innings Wednesday against the Rays. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie allowed his lone run of the night in the second inning but allowed only a bunt single across his final four frames. He has now turned in four consecutive quality starts, allowing only six earned runs across 28 innings while posting a 32:3 K:BB in that span. For the season, McKenzie owns a 2.99 ERA with 186 strikeouts across 186.1 frames.
Sep 22 2022McKenzie (11-11) earned the win Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits over eight innings in an 8-2 victory over the White Sox. He struck out 13. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie allowed his runs in the form of a fourth-inning home run off the bat of third baseman Yoan Moncada and a seventh-inning RBI single from Gavin Sheets. The righty has thrown seven innings or more eight times in his last 15 starts. In addition, the 25-year-old has generated a lot of swings-and-misses during his last seven outings, recording 56 strikeouts over 45.2 innings.
Sep 16 2022McKenzie allowed three runs on seven hits over seven innings against Minnesota on Friday. He struck out eight and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was in danger of falling to 10-12 before Cleveland's late comeback. He's now given up three or fewer runs in eight straight starts, registering a 2.32 ERA and a 54:11 K:BB during that stretch. He also forced double-digit whiffs in four consecutive outings. On the year, McKenzie owns a 3.08 ERA across 28 appearances. The 25-year-old is expected to face the White Sox on the road next week.
Sep 14 2022McKenzie had his next start pushed back to Friday versus the Twins, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was originally slated to start Thursday's matchup with the White Sox, but he will now toe the rubber in the opener against the Twins on Friday. It is not yet clear why the team opted to push him back, and more information will likely be provided after Wednesday's contest. Hunter Gaddis is expected to be called up to start Thursday in McKenzie's place.
Sep 10 2022McKenzie (10-11) allowed six hits and two walks while striking out five over seven scoreless innings to earn the win Saturday over the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was excellent and received sufficient support to help him earn his first win in four starts. This was his seventh scoreless outing in 27 appearances (26 starts) this season, though the Guardians' usually-steady bullpen nearly cost him the victory. McKenzie has been excellent throughout the year with a 3.05 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 159:43 K:BB across 165.1 innings. He's projected for a home start versus the White Sox next week if the Guardians stay on turn.
Sep 5 2022McKenzie allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out five over 5.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Royals on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie pitched well for four innings but gave up a two-run home run to Drew Waters in the fifth. The Royals added another run to McKenzie's ledger in the sixth, and he ended up one out shy of a quality start. He's now missed that achievement in two straight outings after recording four in a row. For the season, the right-hander has a 3.18 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 154:41 K:BB through 158.1 innings across 26 outings (25 starts). He remains at a 9-11 record heading into a projected road start in Minnesota this weekend.
Aug 31 2022McKenzie (9-11) was charged with the loss after he pitched five innings, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven Wednesday versus the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie didn't have his best stuff Wednesday, failing to pitch at least six innings for the first time since July 23. He walked in a run in the top of the third frame and surrendered a solo homer to Gunnar Henderson in the fourth. The outing snapped the 25-year-old's streak of four consecutive quality starts. McKenzie has produced a 2.48 ERA with 36 strikeouts over 32.2 innings in his last five outings.
Aug 25 2022McKenzie (9-10) allowed three earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four across six innings to take the loss Thursday against the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All the damage against McKenzie came in the first inning when he surrendered a three-run homer to Mitch Haniger. McKenzie recovered from there and managed to turn in his fourth consecutive quality start. Since the All-Star break, he has maintained a 3.11 ERA with 46:10 K:BB across 46.1 frames.
Aug 19 2022McKenzie (9-9) yielded two runs on six hits over seven innings Friday, striking out 14 and earning a win over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was nearly untouchable Friday and set new career highs with 25 whiffs and 14 punchouts. After allowing two runs on four hits in the first inning, he retired 18 of the next 20 batters, including 13 strikeouts. The 25-year-old lowered his season ERA to 3.11 with a strong 138:35 K:BB over 141.2 innings. Since the start of July, McKenzie is 5-3 with a 1.91 ERA across nine starts. He'll look to keep the momentum rolling in Seattle next week.
Aug 13 2022McKenzie (8-9) allowed two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three across 6.2 innings to take the loss Saturday against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie served up a home run to lead off both the fifth and seventh innings, which ultimately led to his ninth loss of the season. The outing marked the first time that McKenzie allowed multiple homers in seven starts entering Saturday's start, during which time he maintained a 1.70 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 48:12 K:BB across 47.2 frames. For the season, McKenzie has a 3.14 ERA with a 124:35 K:BB in 134.2 innings.
Aug 7 2022McKenzie (8-8) allowed two hits and a walk while striking out eight in eight scoreless innings to earn the win over the Astros on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was charged with losses in his last two starts, but he was dominant while tossing just 91 pitches (66 strikes) over eight innings Sunday. He didn't get much run support from the Guardians' offense during the pitching duel, but he still managed to pick up his eighth win of the season. After giving up nine runs (eight earned) in 13 innings over his last two starts, it was encouraging to see the right-hander regain the dominance that he displayed when he posted a 0.34 ERA and 0.79 WHIP in 26.2 innings over his first four starts in July. He tentatively lines up to make his next start on the road against Toronto on Saturday.
Aug 2 2022McKenzie (7-8) took the loss Tuesday against Arizona, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out seven in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie got off to a rough start, allowing the first four batters to reach safely including a three-run homer by Christian Walker. He then settled down and retired 10 straight batters before getting knocked around for two more runs in the fifth. After giving up just one run combined in his first four starts in July, the 25-year-old has allowed four earned runs in consecutive starts. With 120 innings on the season, he's matched last year's big-league total.
Jul 28 2022McKenzie (7-7) took the loss against Boston on Thursday, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk while striking out six batters over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie held the Red Sox scoreless through five frames, but he fell behind when Xander Bogaerts tagged him for a three-run home run in the sixth inning. Cleveland's offense couldn't muster an adequate response, and McKenzie ended up with his seventh loss of the season. Despite the disappointing outcome, the right-hander pitched well overall, racking up 14 swinging strikes and completing seven innings for the third time in his past five starts. McKenzie was hit hard during his final two starts in June, but he's bounced back by allowing just five earned runs while posting a 33:9 K:BB over 33.2 innings in July.
Jul 23 2022McKenzie pitched 5.2 innings, surrendering one run on four hits and two walks while striking out four in the Game 1 victory over the White Sox in Saturday's doubleheader. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie fired three perfect innings to open Saturday's contest before running into trouble in the fourth frame. He allowed three singles and walked a batter in the inning, but he was able to limit the damage to just one run when he got Seby Zavala to strike out with the bases loaded to end the frame. McKenzie was later removed in sixth after registering two outs. Over his last four outings, the right-hander has allowed one run over 26.2 innings, striking out 27 batters over that stretch. The hot streak has McKenzie's season ERA down to 3.11 over 107 frames in 18 appearances (17 starts).
Jul 14 2022McKenzie (7-6) earned the win Thursday over Detroit, striking out 12 in eight scoreless innings while allowing five hits. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie scattered five singles and only one baserunner even reached scoring position. Eleven of his 12 strikeouts were swinging and he fanned five of the last seven batters he faced. It was the first time that he struck out more than eight batters in a game all season, and the 12 punchouts are a new career-best mark for the 24-year-old. In three starts in July, he is 3-0 with 21 shutout innings pitched, nine hits allowed (all singles) and a 23:6 K:BB.
Jul 9 2022McKenzie (6-6) earned the win during Saturday's 13-1 victory over Kansas City, allowing three hits and five walks with four strikeouts in six scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This one got out of hand early, and McKenzie was able to coast to an easy win despite a season-high five walks thanks in part to four double plays. The 24-year-old has rebounded superbly from two poor starts to conclude June with 13 scoreless innings over his last two turns. He has a 3.47 ERA, though McKenzie's 1.01 WHIP ranks 11th among all qualified starters. He tentatively lines up to take the mound again midweek against Detroit.
Jul 3 2022McKenzie (5-6) gave up one hit and one walk over seven scoreless frames Sunday, striking out seven and earning a win over the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie retired 10 straight batters to begin the game before allowing a pair of baserunners in the fourth inning. He danced around that small threat and the Guardians' staff ended up one-hitting the Yankees in the 2-0 victory. McKenzie went 1-2 with an unsightly 6.44 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in five June starts. He lowered his season ERA to 3.71 with his first scoreless outing since May 1. McKenzie is lined up for a start in Kansas City next week.
Jun 28 2022McKenzie (4-6) took the loss in Monday's 11-1 rout at the hands of the Twins, coughing up seven runs on eight hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For the second straight start, Minnesota had McKenzie's number, as half of the hits off the right-hander Monday went for extra bases, including homers by Gary Sanchez and Nick Gordon. Through three outings against the Twins this season, McKenzie has an 8.31 ERA and 3.6 HR/9; against the rest of the league, he sports a 2.86 ERA and 1.3 HR/9.
Jun 22 2022McKenzie allowed six runs on nine hits and a walk with five strikeouts in 4.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Twins on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie posted his shortest start since April in this one, with the nine hits he allowed marking a season high. He also allowed multiple homers (three) for the fourth time in his last five starts, though the Guardians' offense was able to bail him out. The 24-year-old's poor start pushed his ERA to 3.51 with a 1.01 WHIP and 66:20 K:BB through 74.1 innings overall. McKenzie will look to get back into form next week with a home rematch against the Twins.
Jun 17 2022McKenzie (4-5) allowed one earned run on seven hits and one walk while striking out six across six innings to earn the win Thursday against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie allowed a single and double to the first two batters he faced, but he escaped the jam without allowing a run. The only damage against him came in the fifth inning, when he allowed a leadoff triple. Otherwise, McKenzie had an impressive outing -- particularly given that he was pitching in Coors Field -- highlighted by 16 swinging strikes on 93 total pitches. He has now allowed two earned runs or fewer while working six or more innings in four of his last five turns through the rotation.
Jun 11 2022McKenzie did not factor into the decision against Oakland on Friday after going six innings and allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six and walking two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Although McKenzie did not factor into the decision, he still picked up a quality start, his sixth of the year. He may not be striking out batters at the same rate as last season (7.7 K/9 this year, 10.2 K/9 in 2021), but the righty has made other adjustments as his ERA this season sits at 3.09 through 64 innings compared to a 4.95 mark in 120 innings last year.
Jun 5 2022McKenzie (3-5) took the loss Saturday, giving up five runs on three hits and three walks over seven innings as the Guardians fell 5-4 to the Orioles. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander didn't allow much traffic on the basepaths, but all three of the hits off him left the yard, including a three-run blast by Austin Hays in the third inning. McKenzie served up only one homer over his first six starts this year, but as the weather has warmed up he's had trouble keeping the ball in the yard, getting tagged for eight long balls in his last four outings. Despite those stumbles, the 24-year-old will still take a 3.10 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 49:16 K:BB through 58 innings into his next start.
May 29 2022McKenzie (3-4) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk over 7.2 innings Sunday, striking out eight and taking a loss against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie gave up solo home runs to Harold Castro and Jeimer Candelario in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively. After yielding only one homer through his first six starts this season, the 24-year-old righty has coughed up five over his last three outings. Still, he's sporting an impressive 2.65 ERA and 45:13 K:BB through 51 frames. McKenzie is lined up to take the mound in Baltimore next week.
May 23 2022McKenzie (3-3) picked up the win Monday after he tossed seven innings, surrendering one run on three hits and a walk while striking out six versus the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie dominated in this one, firing six scoreless innings before Alex Bregman took him deep for a solo shot in the seventh frame, providing the only blemish on his line. It was the second straight outing that the right-hander pitched seven innings and his fourth consecutive quality start. The streak of dominant outings has lowered his ERA from 3.71 to 2.70 while his WHIP has shrunk to a very impressive 0.90 over 43.1 innings in eight starts in 2022. McKenzie will look to continue his hot streak in his next start, which tentatively lines up to be Saturday against the Tigers.
May 15 2022McKenzie (2-3) allowed three runs on three hits and two walks over seven innings Sunday, striking out four and taking a loss against Minnesota. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie coughed up an RBI single to Max Kepler in the first inning followed by a pair of solo homers from Gio Urshela and Byron Buxton in the fourth and fifth frames, respectively. Prior to Sunday's outing, he had given up just one home run through 29.1 innings this season. The 24-year-old now owns a 2.97 ERA with a 34:11 K:BB on the year. McKenzie is lined up to face the Tigers at home next weekend.
May 8 2022McKenzie (2-2) picked up the win in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Blue Jays, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander helped ensure the Guardians would come away with a split after dropping the matinee, firing 68 of 102 pitches for strikes as he delivered his second straight quality start. McKenzie is benefitting from 2022's less lively ball -- after serving up 21 homers in 120 innings last season, he's been tagged for only one long ball in 29.1 innings to begin this year, leading to a 2.76 ERA and 1.02 WHIP.
May 1 2022McKenzie (1-2) got the win during Sunday's 7-3 victory over Oakland, allowing four hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in 6.1 scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was dealing Sunday, cruising through six easy innings before being pulled with two on and one out in the seventh. In logging his first quality start in five turns, the 24-year-old recorded season highs in innings pitched, strikeouts and pitch count (96). He'll carry a 2.70 ERA and 1.03 WHIP into his next start, likely to come against Toronto over the weekend.
Apr 26 2022McKenzie (0-2) took the loss during Tuesday's 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Angels, allowing four runs on seven hits with six strikeouts in 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie pitched okay against a potent Angels lineup, allowing a single run in the second and fifth innings with a two-run Mike Trout home run in the third accounting for half the damage. The 24-year-old showed improvement despite the four earned runs, as he worked his most innings of the season while recording a high pitch count of 90. In addition, McKenzie threw more than 75 percent of his pitches for strikes and didn't issue any free passes after marks of 50 percent and four in his previous outing. He'll go for his first win of the season against Oakland on Sunday.
Apr 20 2022McKenzie allowed one earned run on one hit and four walks while striking out four across 4.1 innings in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the White Sox. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie showed signs of dominance in his third outing of the season, as he allowed only one hit and and generated a strikeout per inning. However, he was done in by his inefficiency, as only half of his 80 pitches found the strike zone. That led to four walks, though he had only issued a pair of free passes across seven frames entering Wednesday's appearance. Assuming McKenzie can throw strikes more consistently in his next start -- currently scheduled for Tuesday against the Angels -- he should be able to work a bit deeper into the game.
Apr 13 2022McKenzie tossed four scoreless innings, giving up three hits while hitting a batter and striking out six in Wednesday's win over the Reds. He did not factor into the game's decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie had his best stuff in this one, scattering four baserunners over four innings and tossing 50 of his 67 pitches for strikes. He did come close to surrendering a run in the second inning, but Amed Rosario gunned out Kyle Farmer at home to end the inning after he tried to score from first on a Brandon Drury double. The right-hander looked much better in this contest than when he last appeared April 7 against the Royals, giving up two runs over three innings. McKenzie will look to further lower his season numbers when he takes on the White Sox at home in his next projected start Tuesday.
Apr 7 2022McKenzie allowed two runs on two hits across 3.0 innings and earned the loss Thursday against the Royals. He walked two and struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As expected, McKenzie's first outing of the season came in relief of Shane Bieber. With two outs in the eighth, the 24-year-old gave up back-to-back RBI knocks to Bobby Witt and Andrew Benintendi, which eventually was the difference in the game. Despite the poor box score, McKenzie looked sharp until a leadoff walk in the eighth derailed his outing. When Cleveland finally get its starters stretched out, he's expected to return to the rotation, but for now, he'll likely continue operating as a piggyback.
Apr 2 2022McKenzie's first outing of the regular appearance is expected to come in relief, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Guardians kick off the season with a strange series against the Royals, in which they'll play four games spread over five days. McKenzie is expected to piggyback one of the four starters in that series, but he'll likely return to the rotation after that.
Mar 22 2022McKenzie (illness) is listed among the Guardians' scheduled pitchers for Tuesday's Cactus League game against the Padres, Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Terry Francona said Monday that McKenzie was feeling under the weather, but the lanky right-hander apparently made enough progress overnight to put himself in position to pitch Tuesday. McKenzie is scheduled to follow starter Zach Plesac, with both pitchers likely to work multiple innings as they get stretched out in advance of Opening Day.
Oct 2 2021McKenzie (5-9) allowed four runs on four hits and four walks with two strikeouts through four innings, taking the loss in Saturday's 7-2 defeat to the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie battled his command Saturday, issuing the most walks he's allowed since June 12 and finding the zone with just 54 percent of his pitches. All of his runs came via the long ball too, with Willie Calhoun going yard for a solo shot in the first before Jonah Heim smacked a three-run shot in the fourth. McKenzie showed a ton of growth this season, but simply ran out of gas down the stretch. After being virtually unhittable through August and into September (1.76 ERA, 48:5 K:BB through seven starts), the lanky right-hander had a brutal 11.81 ERA and 9:8 K:BB in his last three outings. Still, at just 24 years old, McKenzie has oodles of upside and projects to grow into a more than serviceable rotation piece for Cleveland over the next few seasons.
Sep 26 2021McKenzie (5-8) allowed three runs on five hits and three walks over 2.1 innings Sunday, striking out three and taking a loss against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie allowed a run in the first inning but really stumbled in the third. The first five White Sox batters of that inning reached base, including Eloy Jimenez, who drove in two runs with a single. After a seven-start stretch as one of the hottest pitchers in the league, the rookie has been crushed for 10 runs over 6.2 frames in his last two appearances. McKenzie now owns a 4.81 ERA and 134:54 KBB through 116 innings. He's tentatively lined up to face the Rangers on the road next weekend.
Sep 21 2021McKenzie (5-7) took the loss in the first game of Monday's doubleheader against the Royals, surrendering seven runs on nine hits -- including three home runs -- and a walk over 4.1 innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander couldn't keep the ball in the park and couldn't keep the bases clear before he did, serving up two-run shots in the second, third and fifth innings before getting the hook. McKenzie saw his streak of seven straight quality starts end with a thud, but even with Monday's brutal outing, the 24-year-old sports a 2.86 ERA, 0.70 WHIP and 52:6 K:BB through 50.1 innings since the beginning of August.
Sep 15 2021McKenzie (5-6) picked up the win in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Twins, allowing one run on three hits and a walk over six innings in a 3-1 victory. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: That's now seven straight quality starts for McKenzie since the beginning of August. The young right-hander has a 1.76 ERA, 0.54 WHIP and 48:5 K:BB through 46 innings over that stretch, a remarkable turnaround considering he sported a 6.11 ERA and 1.44 WHIP at the end of July, and he is positioning himself for a key role in Cleveland's 2022 rotation.
Sep 8 2021McKenzie (4-6) allowed one run on three hits and one walk with seven strikeouts over six innings, taking a hard-luck loss in Wednesday's 3-0 defeat to the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie deserved a better fate Wednesday, but Minnesota starter Joe Ryan took a perfect game into the seventh inning and Cleveland ended the contest with just one hit allowed. Even with the Twins' rookie hogging the spotlight, McKenzie deserves major plaudits for what has been an incredible pace of late. In his last four starts, the lanky right-hander has a K:BB of 32:3 and an ERA of 1.00 over 27 innings. His situation with regard to run support is sub-optimal, but McKenzie is certainly holding up his end of the bargain.
Sep 3 2021McKenzie (4-5) earned the win Thursday against the Royals after tossing six innings of one-run ball, allowing two hits and a walk while fanning six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie had a rough stretch between July 20 and Aug. 5, where he posted a 6.86 ERA on 21 innings across three outings, but he's been excellent since then with four straight quality starts while not allowing more than one earned run in each of his last three appearances. He owns a blistering 1.33 ERA on 27 innings across that four-game span, but more importantly, he looks completely recovered from the shoulder fatigue that landed him on the injured list last month.
Sep 1 2021McKenzie (shoulder) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie dealt with right shoulder fatigue for a week and a half, but he'll return to the mound as the starter in Thursday's series finale against the Royals. Across his two starts prior to his absence, he posted a 0.60 ERA, 0.27 WHIP and 19:1 K:BB in 15 innings.
Aug 31 2021McKenzie (shoulder) will be activated from the 10-day injured list and start Thursday's game against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Apparently the righty's shoulder fatigue was not a serious injury, as he'll have spent the minimum amount of time on the IL. McKenzie is coming off two outstanding starts in which he threw 15 total innings with 19 strikeouts while allowing just three hits and one run. He's enjoyed incredible success in three starts against the Royals this season, allowing only one run in 15.2 total innings with 19 strikeouts.
Aug 25 2021McKenzie was placed on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder fatigue Wednesday, retroactive to Aug. 22, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie earned the win in his most recent start when he allowed a run on two hits and a walk while striking out eight in seven innings against the Angels on Saturday. However, he's apparently dealing with a shoulder issue that will force him to miss at least one turn through the rotation. Logan Allen was recalled from Triple-A Columbus in a corresponding move, and he's an option to take McKenzie's place in the rotation.
Aug 21 2021McKenzie (3-5) earned the win over the Angels on Saturday. He allowed one run on two hits and a walk while striking out eight over seven-plus innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander continues to impress of late, as he's strung together four straight quality starts. A fielder's choice in the eighth inning produced the only run the Angels could muster against McKenzie in the contest. The 24-year-old has lowered his ERA from 6.11 at the end of July to 4.83 after his recent hot streak. He's added a 1.15 WHIP and 107:47 K:BB in 91.1 innings overall. McKenzie is projected to draw a tough home start versus Boston in next weekend's three-game series.
Aug 15 2021McKenzie (2-5) earned the win Sunday over Detroit. He threw eight shutout innings of one-hit ball with a season-high 11 strikeouts and no walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie carried a perfect game into the eighth inning, where Harold Castro broke up the bid with a two-out single. The right-hander has had few gems this season, but Sunday's was arguably the brightest of them all as he notched his fourth quality start in his last five outings. Despite the better pitching lately, McKenzie still has a 5.12 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 99:46 K:BB across 84.1 innings. He lines up for a home start versus the Angels next weekend.
Aug 10 2021McKenzie allowed two runs on four hits and one walk with five strikeouts through six innings, taking a no-decision in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie got better as the game went on Tuesday night, striking out four consecutive Oakland batters in his third trip through the order. The only damage to his line came on a Sean Murphy RBI double in the second and a Seth Brown solo homer in the fourth. While this is McKenzie's fifth straight start in which he has allowed multiple earned runs, the 24-year-old needed just 86 pitches to get through six innings and scored a quality start. McKenzie has never thrown more than 93 pitches in a start in his career, suggesting that there is a limit as to how far Cleveland will push him. However, he has now gone six or more innings in four of his last six starts. To give that number some context, the lanky right-hander didn't venture beyond 5.1 innings in any of his first 11 starts this season.
Aug 5 2021McKenzie (1-5) allowed three runs on five hits and struck out four over seven innings, taking the loss versus Toronto on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was McKenzie's third quality start in his last five outings. He pitched quite well against all batters not named Bo Bichette, who took him deep in the fourth inning for a two-run home run and added an RBI single in the sixth. The unlucky start saw McKenzie lower his ERA to 5.89 with a 1.36 WHIP and 83:45 K:BB across 70.1 innings this season. He's projected to make his next start versus Oakland next week.
Jul 31 2021McKenzie allowed six runs on four hits and three walks over four innings in a no-decision Saturday against the White Sox. He struck out a pair. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was touched up for three long balls, including a grand slam by Seby Zavala in the fourth inning that broke the game wide open and gave Chicago a 6-1 lead. The 23-year-old McKenzie has alternated good starts with bad ones in his four appearances since being recalled from the minors earlier this month. He had managed to minimize the walks prior to issuing three free passes Saturday, but he's also allowed six home runs in his last three outings. All told, McKenzie has posted a 5.57 ERA in July and a 6.11 mark in 15 games (14 starts) overall.
Jul 25 2021McKenzie allowed two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out six over six innings in a no-decision versus Tampa Bay on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was in line for a hard-luck loss after giving up a solo home run to Nelson Cruz in the sixth inning, but Cleveland pulled ahead in the eighth. The right-hander has had mixed results since he rejoined the big-league roster July 9. He's produced two quality starts in his last three outings, but also struggled in a four-inning appearance versus Houston. He owns a 5.61 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 77:42 K:BB through 59.1 innings. McKenzie lines up to make his next start versus the White Sox next weekend.
Jul 21 2021McKenzie (1-4) was handed the loss Tuesday after allowing five runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out three over four innings against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was brilliant his last time out in a spot start against the Royals but couldn't replicate the same success against a much more dangerous Astros lineup. Altuve took him deep twice over the first three innings and his eights hits given up were easily a season-high. McKenzie did only walk one batter for a second straight game, a category he's struggled with for most of the season. The 23-year-old right-hander is having a rough sophomore season. He owns a 5.91 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 71:41 K:BB over 53.1 innings. He tentatively lines up to face the Rays over the weekend but is going to be difficult for fantasy managers to trust.
Jul 9 2021McKenzie allowed one hit and one walk while striking out nine over seven scoreless innings in a no-decision versus Kansas City on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was McKenzie's longest start of the season at any level, but he was unlucky to not escape with a win after Emmanuel Clase couldn't protect a one-run lead in the eighth inning. Strong outings have been a rarity for McKenzie this year. The right-hander owns a 5.47 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 68:40 K:BB across 49.1 innings at the major-league level. It's unclear if he'll remain in the rotation after the All-Star break -- that will likely depend on the readiness of Shane Bieber (shoulder) or Aaron Civale (finger) to return from the injured list.
Jul 8 2021McKenzie will be recalled from Triple-A Columbus to start Friday's game against the Royals, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mejia was sent to the minors in mid-June, and he posted a 3.94 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 19:10 K:BB in 16 innings across four Triple-A starts since then. He last pitched Sunday, so he should be on normal rest when he returns to the major-league club Friday. The right-hander made 11 appearances (10 starts) for Cleveland earlier in the year and recorded a 6.38 ERA and 59:39 K:BB in 42.1 innings.
Jun 13 2021McKenzie was optioned to Triple-A Columbus prior to Sunday's game against the Mariners, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie struggled in his latest start Saturday, walking four while allowing a run without being able to get through the first inning. He'll return to Columbus for the time being, and improving his command will likely be his top priority going forward. Infielder Ernie Clement was recalled in a corresponding roster move.
Jun 12 2021McKenzie didn't factor into the decision Saturday against the Mariners and tossed just 0.2 innings, allowing one run and walking four. He didn't strike out anyone. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was promoted to the big club following a strong start with Triple-A Columbus on June 6, but he entered this game with a 7.56 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 36:21 K:BB in 25 innings over six previous starts with Cleveland last month. This was far from his best start due to massive command issues, and while he improved his ERA to 6.38, he didn't look comfortable on the mound. As things stand now, it remains to be seen whether he'll have another shot in the rotation any time soon.
Jun 11 2021McKenzie will start Saturday's game against the Mariners, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He tossed 5.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts and two walks in a June 6 start for Triple-A Columbus. However, McKenzie had a 7.56 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 36:21 K:BB in 25 innings over six May starts with the big club. If he can hold his own, he could stick around in the rotation.
Jun 8 2021McKenzie may be recalled to start for Cleveland on Saturday against the Mariners, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Terry Francona suggested as much Tuesday, and it makes sense that McKenzie, despite his struggles in 2021, would start Saturday over Cal Quantrill. Quantrill did nothing Sunday against the Orioles to earn another start, allowing seven runs (five earned) in 1.1 innings. Having yielded at least five runs in three of his last four big-league starts, McKenzie hasn't fared much better than Quantrill, but he's likely to get yet another opportunity Saturday against a Mariners lineup that shelled him for two homers and five runs May 15.
Jun 2 2021Cleveland optioned McKenzie to Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For the second time in less than a week, McKenzie was optioned to the minors immediately after making a start. In his latest outing in Game 1 of Monday's doubleheader with the White Sox, McKenzie struck out a season-high 10 batters, but he was still tagged for five runs on four hits and two walks over 5.1 innings in a no-decision. Unless Cleveland places a player on the injured list in a corresponding move, McKenzie won't be eligible to rejoin the big club until the latter half of next week. After a rainout Wednesday, Cleveland has off days June 3, June 7 and June 10, so the club may choose to get by with a four-man rotation sans McKenzie until June 15.
May 31 2021McKenzie allowed five runs on four hits and two walks over 5.1 innings in a loss during Game 1 of Monday's doubleheader. He struck out 10 and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was cursed by an ugly second inning where he allowed four runs on three hits and two walks. However, he set a new franchise record with eight consecutive strikeouts and he punched out nine of the last 11 batters he faced. The 23-year-old righty has allowed at least five runs in three of his last four starts, raising his season ERA to 6.26. If Cleveland elects to give McKenzie another turn in the rotation, he could face the Orioles on the road this weekend.
May 27 2021McKenzie was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie returned to the major-league mound as the starter in Wednesday's game and allowed one hit and three walks while striking out five in five scoreless innings. Although he pitched effectively in the no-decision, he'll return to the minors after outfielder Bradley Zimmer was recalled in a corresponding move. However, McKenzie could return to the big-league club when his next turn in the rotation comes up Monday. Cleveland has a doubleheader against the White Sox that day, and McKenzie would be eligible to return earlier than normal if he's designated as the club's 27th man for the twin bill.
May 26 2021Cleveland recalled McKenzie from Triple-A Columbus ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie will reclaim a spot in the rotation after Zach Plesac (thumb) was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday. Cleveland plans to demote McKenzie after Wednesday's outing, but he would be eligible to return on four days' rest Monday. Cleveland will have a doubleheader against the White Sox that day, so McKenzie could be designated as the team's 27th man for the twin bill while starting one of the two contests. Over his previous eight outings (seven starts) in the big leagues this season, McKenzie posted a 6.89 ERA and 1.69 WHIP while striking out 44 over 31.1 innings.
May 22 2021Cleveland optioned McKenzie to Triple-A Columbus on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Friday's short, six-run outing marked the fifth time in eight starts McKenzie yielded at least three earned runs. Further, the righty's control issues (30 walks in 31.1 innings) gave little choice to a Cleveland team that, with its subpar lineup, requires solid starting pitching to remain competitive on a nightly basis. McKenzie will almost certainly return to the big-league club at some point this season, but for now he'll have some time in Triple-A to work on his command.
May 21 2021McKenzie (1-3) was tagged with the loss Friday against the Twins after giving up six runs on two hits and five walks while fanning four across 3.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie had massive control issues, allowing a season-high five walks while also throwing just 37 of his 72 pitches for strikes. The command woes are nothing new for the right-hander, though, as he has issued four or more walks in all but two starts this season while posting a 44:30 K:BB across 31.1 innings in 2021. His next start is scheduled for next week on the road against the Tigers.
May 16 2021McKenzie (1-2) allowed five runs on five hits and three walks with six strikeouts in 4.1 innings, taking the loss Saturday versus Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander allowed a solo home run to Mitch Haniger in the first inning and a three-run blast to Dylan Moore in the fourth. McKenzie hadn't pitched since May 6, as Cleveland's schedule allowed them to skip him once through the rotation. He sports a 5.79 ERA with a 1.64 WHIP, 40:25 K:BB and seven homers allowed in 28 innings. His velocity is down to 91.3 mph from 92.8 mph last year, and that combined with a 19.7 percent walk rate and batters posting a 53.2 percent hard-hit rate against him has led to significant struggles in 2021.
May 6 2021McKenzie (1-1) pitched five scoreless innings on two hits and four walks while striking out five, earning the win over the Royals on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie turned the tide Thursday, earning his first win of the season in his first start without allowing any runs. The 23-year-old still walked four batters for the fourth start in a row. He has a 4.94 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in 23.2 innings. His next start comes Wednesday against the Cubs.
May 1 2021McKenzie (0-1) went two innings and allowed five runs on one hit and four walks with six strikeouts in Cleveland's 7-3 loss to Chicago on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a 1-2-3 first featuring three strikeouts, the young starter needed 42 pitches to labor through a dreadful second that was punctuated by a Tim Anderson grand slam. The strikeout upside is clearly there, but until McKenzie can limit the walks, he won't be able to work deep into games. None of his five starts so far this season have lasted more than five innings.
Apr 25 2021McKenzie allowed three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out five in four innings in Sunday's win over the Yankees. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie began Sunday's game with three scoreless innings, but he gave up a pair of home runs in the fourth inning. Cleveland's offense provided plenty of run support late in the contest Sunday, but McKenzie was forced to settle for yet another no-decision. Across his first four appearances this season, McKenzie has posted a 4.32 ERA and 23:14 K:BB in 16.2 innings. He lines up to make his next start on the road against the White Sox on Saturday.
Apr 17 2021McKenzie hurled five innings against Cincinnati on Saturday, giving up one run on five hits and four walks while striking out seven. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was a tad wild in the outing, issuing four free passes over five frames. However, the right-hander did an excellent job controlling the damage, and the only run scored against him came on a Tucker Barnhart solo home run. McKenzie has now issued 10 walks over 12.2 frames, already surpassing the nine walks he yielded across 33.1 innings last season. That said, he has also struck out 18 batters and has a respectable 3.55 ERA. McKenzie's next start is scheduled for Friday at home against the Yankees.
Apr 12 2021McKenzie allowed three runs on two hits and two walks while striking out six over four innings in a no-decision against the White Sox on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Adam Eaton made McKenzie pay for a couple walks in the third inning, smacking a three-run homer to erase an early Cleveland lead. McKenzie induced nine swinging strikes on 76 pitches in his first start of the season -- the team was able to get away with only four starters for the first couple weeks of the season. McKenzie lines up for another road start this weekend, this time in Cincinnati.
Apr 11 2021McKenzie is scheduled to start Monday's series opener against the White Sox in Chicago, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cleveland was able to get by with a four-man rotation for the first week and a half of the regular season, but with a jam-packed seven-game slate on tap during the upcoming week, the club will break in McKenzie as a fifth starter. As a rookie in 2020, McKenzie made eight appearances (six starts) for Cleveland, posting a 3.24 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 42:9 K:BB in 33.1 innings.
Apr 5 2021McKenzie allowed one run on two hits and four walks and struck out five over 3.2 innings in Monday's 3-0 loss to the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie threw 58 pitches (32 strikes) as the first reliever behind starter Logan Allen. This was an expected assignment for McKenzie, who isn't likely to work as a starter until at least April 13. The 23-year-old right-hander is expected to have his workload managed in 2021. McKenzie was solid as a rookie in 2020 with a 3.24 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 42:9 K:BB over 33.1 innings in eight appearances (six starts). Fantasy managers will want to keep a close eye on how McKenzie is used this year -- his fantasy value would be limited in a long-relief role if he falters as a starter.
Mar 30 2021McKenzie won't be asked to start before April 13 and may not be a true starter that day, Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Previous reports indicated that McKenzie and Logan Allen had beaten out Cal Quantrill for Cleveland's final two rotation spots, but with three off days in the first eight days of April, the situation will be less than entirely clear at the start of the season. Allen is expected to make his season debut Monday against Kansas City, but McKenzie could be used as an opener in that contest. McKenzie might not even get the April 13 start, as that could go to Quantrill instead or to a combination of the two pitchers. McKenzie should still spend a portion of the season as a true starter, but his early usage may be emblematic of how cautiously he'll be used this season. That caution seems sensible, as McKenzie missed all of 2019 and a fair portion of 2018 with injuries, and he only threw 33.1 innings in last year's shortened season. His workload will undoubtedly be carefully monitored this year.
Mar 28 2021McKenzie will be included in Cleveland's Opening Day rotation, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie and Logan Allen secured the final two rotation spots after Cleveland moved Cal Quantrill to the bullpen to begin the season, while Adam Plutko was traded to the Orioles. The 23-year-old righty had an impressive debut season in the majors in 2020, posting a 3.24 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 42:9 K:BB in 33.1 innings across eight outings (six starts).
Mar 13 2021McKenzie gave up one run on three hits and one walk while striking out two in three innings in his most recent Cactus League outing against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He has steadily built up this spring, throwing 1.2 innings in his first outing, then two innings and then three innings in his latest appearance. McKenzie and Cal Quantrill have been piggybacking in their appearances this spring. The assumption is that McKenzie will be the No. 4 starter, while Quantrill and Logan Allen vie for the final spot in the rotation, although Cleveland has not officially confirmed that McKenzie is locked into a spot.
Sep 23 2020McKenzie fired two scoreless innings, giving up a hit while striking out three during the Indians' 3-2 win versus the White Sox on Wednesday night. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie will look to be converted into a weapon out of the bullpen for Cleveland throughout the playoffs. The 23-year-old displayed a healthy -- and reassuring -- rebound in velocity, averaging 93.9 while touching 95. Through 29.1 innings in 2020, McKenzie finishes with a 3.45 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP.
Sep 22 2020McKenzie will be available out of the bullpen for Tuesday's game against the White Sox, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie had a relatively short start Saturday against the Tigers, and he'll be available to pitch in relief for the second game of the series against the White Sox. The team could use a potential relief outing to see how he could fare in that role during the postseason. If he would make a relief appearance Tuesday, it could impact his availability for his scheduled turn through the rotation Friday.
Sep 19 2020McKenzie pitched four innings Saturday, allowing one run on six hits and three walks in a 5-2 loss to the Tigers. He also struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie threw 79 pitches (48 for strikes) and had a 2-1 lead prior to getting pulled. Concern is rising in the baseball community about the health of the young stud, as he averaged a season-low fastball velocity of 90.6 on Saturday. Additionally, that figure has been declining in each of his six starts. It is a situation worth monitoring.
Sep 13 2020McKenzie (2-1) allowed five runs on three hits and a walk over 4.1 innings Sunday, striking out seven batters and taking the loss against Minnesota. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was cursed by the long ball Sunday, with all five runs coming via home runs; he allowed a pair of two-run homers to Marwin Gonzalez and Ryan Jeffers in the third and fifth innings, and a solo shot by Nelson Cruz in the fourth. The 23-year-old rookie now owns a 3.91 ERA and 33:6 K:BB across 25.1 frames. McKenzie will look to get back on track in Detroit on Saturday.
Sep 8 2020McKenzie gave up three runs on three hits and one walk over five innings during Tuesday's loss to the Royals. He had seven strikeouts and didn't factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The young righty had 13 swinging strikes and largely held Kansas City in check, but a three-run homer from Whit Merrifield during the third frame was enough to tarnish his line. McKenzie has a 2.57 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and 26:5 K:BB through 21 innings and lines up to pitch Sunday at Minnesota.
Sep 2 2020McKenzie (2-0) pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while striking out six in a win over the Royals on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie only allowed one extra-base hit, an Alex Gordon double, but he otherwise gave the Royals nothing. The 23-year-old McKenzie is making himself known with a 1.69 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 19 strikeouts across 16 innings. With Mike Clevinger shipped to San Diego, McKenzie will likely finish the season in the rotation. His next start is expected to be Tuesday in a rematch with the Royals.
Aug 28 2020McKenzie allowed two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out three in four innings Friday versus the Cardinals. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was not particularly efficient, requiring 84 pitches (50 strikes) to get through the outing. A strong performance from the Cleveland offense assured he wouldn't take the loss. The rookie right-hander now has a 2.70 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 13 strikeouts through 10 innings. If he gets another turn in the rotation, it would likely be Wednesday versus the Royals.
Aug 24 2020Indians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti confirmed Sunday that McKenzie will remain on the 28-man roster and receive another start this week, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 23-year-old righty was electric in his big-league debut Saturday versus the Tigers, working six innings and giving up one run on two hits and a walk while striking out 10. He'll be rewarded with at least one more turn through the rotation for his efforts, with McKenzie tentatively lining up for a start in Friday's series opener in St. Louis. Both Mike Clevinger and Zach Plesac will be eligible to rejoin the roster this week after spending the minimum 10 days at the alternate training site, but if either is added to the rotation, it looks like it will be at the expense of Adam Plutko rather than McKenzie. Plutko's next turn comes up Wednesday against the Twins, but the Indians have yet to commit to him getting the starting nod that day.
Aug 22 2020McKenzie (1-0) allowed one earned run on two hits and one walk while striking out 10 across six innings to earn the win Saturday against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McKenzie was sharp in his big-league debut, limiting the Tigers to a solo home run by Willi Castro in the fourth inning. Otherwise, he racked up 16 called strikes and 17 swinging strikes across 80 total pitches, showcasing plenty of deception. While a strong prospect in Cleveland's minor-league system, it's unclear what McKenzie's role in 2020 will be given that he was called up to fill the rotation spot of Zach Plesac.
Aug 20 2020McKenzie is listed as Cleveland's scheduled starter for Saturday's game against the Tigers, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As expected, McKenzie is on track to make his big-league debut over the weekend, filling in for Zach Plesac, who is at the team's alternate camp site after breaking MLB's COVID-19 protocols. The right-hander missed all of 2019 and part of 2018 while recovering from forearm and back strains, though he registered a 2.68 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 87:28 K:BB across 90.2 innings at Double-A in 2018 prior to getting hurt.
Jun 28 2020McKenzie will be a part of the Indians' 60-man player pool this season. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While McKenzie is on the 40-man roster, he missed all of 2019 and part of 2018 while recovering from forearm and back strains, so his inclusion is more for developmental purposes than to bolster the big-league squad. McKenzie will train at an alternate site with other prospects while the big leaguers train at Progressive Field.
Mar 5 2020McKenzie is fully healthy, but the Indians are nonetheless taking things slowly with him in camp, Joe Noga of Cleveland.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He missed all of 2019 and part of 2018 while recovering from forearm and back strains, so he will be managed carefully throughout the 2020 campaign. In addition to those injuries, McKenzie has a very slight 6-foot-5, 165-pound frame. Manager Terry Francona said the next step will either be having him pitch one inning in a major-league game or facing hitters on the backfields in a less formal environment. It sounds like the Indians are looking to delay his debut because that will signify a ramping up of sorts, and this season will already be long enough for a player with McKenzie's recent injury history and fragile physique. He logged 90.2 innings at Double-A in 2018 and may return to that level this season before advancing to Triple-A. McKenzie is on the 40-man roster already, so it's possible he could reach the majors, but he won't be fully turned loose until 2021.

After turning in the best of his six starts this season, McKenzie now carries a 3.34 ERA and 0.93 WHIP while holding opposing hitters to a .195 average. It's been an impressive first tour of the Eastern League for the 20-year-old, whose start to the season was delayed by a forearm injury suffered in spring training.
