The center fielder is up to three homers, five steals, three RBI and 14 runs scored while batting .231/.314/.396 in 26 games.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Taveras, who had two hits in four at-bats in Wednesday's win over the Astros, has made 22 straight starts in center field since being called up late August. "Just based on the quality of his game," Woodward said. "He can man center field just about as good as anybody in the big leagues. That's a huge plus. He could not hit at all and still be valuable. His speed, the way he runs the bases, is a huge asset. Obviously, you have to get on base, but the way he works the strike zone is a huge plus for a younger player." Taveras, who had no experience beyond Double-A entering 2020, is slashing .228/.322/.380 over 23 games this season, but the exposure to MLB pitching should hasten his development.

With this season's focus shifting toward the development of younger talent, the Rangers will get a look at Taveras as the everyday leadoff hitter. "The speed and the ability to kind of see pitches and stay in the strike zone, control the strike zone. He's got an elite quality," manager Chris Woodward said. "Some of our guys control the strike zone, but they don't have the speed. He's a switch hitter, so it doesn't really matter what side they're throwing from." Taveras has six hits in 27 at-bats with four walks and 10 strikeouts over nine games.

The Rangers already have five outfielders, but some are new to the position, still learning or considered below-average defenders. Another use for Taveras would be as the runner placed on second base to start extra innings. The Rangers must evaluate whether having a specialist like this is worth the service time Taveras would accrue toward arbitration and free agency.

His bat is a major question and that's what's prompted one National League scout to lower his grade on Taveras from 60 (plus player) to 50 (average regular). The scout thinks Taveras often looks off-balance at the plate and guessing. At such a young age -- he's the sixth youngest player in the Carolina League -- time is on his side, but we wouldn't be shocked if the organization has him repeat at Down East.
