Jul 24 2021Ruiz went 4-for-4 with three home runs, a double, a walk and five RBI for Triple-A Oklahoma City on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ruiz has been on a tear at the plate of late, collecting at least one hit in seven straight games to push his season average up to .309. Overall, the backstop has crushed 16 homers across 48 contests while notching an equal number of walks and strikeouts (23). He may be the organization's top hitter currently playing in the minors, but his path to big-league playing time remains blocked by Will Smith and Austin Barnes.
May 17 2021Ruiz was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ruiz was called up by the Dodgers on Sunday and went 0-for-1 with a strikeout in the team's loss to Miami. He'll now return to the minors as part of a shuffle to make room for Albert Pujols and Yoshi Tsutsugo.
May 16 2021Ruiz was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 22-year-old was sent down Monday but will rejoin the Dodgers with Corey Seager (hand) landing on the injured list. Ruiz doesn't figure to see much action with Will Smith and Austin Barnes still healthy.
May 10 2021Ruiz was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ruiz spent six days with the big-league club but never had a path to much playing time given the presence of both Will Smith and Austin Barnes. He went 1-for-6 with four strikeouts in limited action, though his lone hit did clear the fence. It will likely take an injury to Smith or Barnes for Ruiz to earn meaningful at-bats this season.
May 9 2021Ruiz stated Saturday that he's willing to play outfield if needed, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ruiz played outfield in high school but has not logged time at the position as a professional. He is currently on the active roster but is solidly behind both Will Smith and Austin Barnes on the catching depth chart. Despite Ruiz's openness to adding a position to his resume, manager Dave Roberts clarified that the team isn't currently considering such a move, per Matthew Moreno of Dodger Blue. If Ruiz were to get reps at another position, it would likely be first base, Roberts added.
May 5 2021Ruiz homered in his only at-bat during Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader loss to the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ruiz was called up to the club prior to Tuesday's twin bill, and he logged his first at-bat of the season with the Dodgers down 7-0 in the final inning. The backstop kept Los Angeles from being shut out with a 405-foot solo shot to right field for his second big-league homer. Remarkably, Ruiz's other career long ball also came in his first at-bat of the season (in 2020). He isn't likely to see much time with Will Smith and Austin Barnes entrenched behind the plate for Los Angeles, but Ruiz could stick with the club and carve out occasional plate appearances if the Dodgers decide they have room to continue carrying a third catcher.
May 4 2021The Dodgers recalled Ruiz from their taxi squad ahead of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He'll provide the Dodgers with a third catcher behind Will Smith and Austin Barnes. Los Angeles opened a spot for Ruiz on the 26-man roster by designating pitcher Mike Kickham for assignment Monday.
Mar 15 2021The Dodgers optioned Ruiz to their minor-league camp Monday, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As expected, Ruiz's demotion likely locks Will Smith and Austin Barnes in as the Dodgers' catchers on the Opening Day roster. Ruiz, who received a brief cup of coffee with Los Angeles in 2020, will presumably serve as the everyday catcher at Triple-A Oklahoma City this season.
Sep 30 2020The Dodgers added Ruiz to their 28-man roster Wednesday in advance of their wild-card series with the Brewers, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ruiz will serve as a third catcher behind Will Smith and Austin Barnes for the three-game series. The Dodgers removed reliever Alex Wood from the roster to clear room for Ruiz.
Aug 23 2020Ruiz was optioned to the alternate training site Sunday, Alanna Rizzo of Spectrum SportsNet LA reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 22-year-old joined the Dodgers last week and went 2-for-8 with a homer in his first two major-league games. Ruiz was promoted with Will Smith (neck) on the injured list, but Smith was activated ahead of Sunday's game.
Aug 19 2020Ruiz stated Tuesday that he reported late to summer camp due to a positive test result for COVID-19, Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ruiz explained that he experienced a three-day fever, weight loss and other symptoms due to the illness. The backstop has since recovered and, after spending time at the team's alternate training site, was summoned to the big club Saturday to fill in for the injured Will Smith (neck). He homered in his first big-league at-bat Sunday.
Aug 16 2020Ruiz went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 8-3 win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ruiz's first major-league at-bat was a booming success, as he took Angels starter Julio Teheran deep in the third inning to get the Dodgers on the board. The 22-year-old catcher spent most of 2019 with Double-A Tulsa and also earned time with Triple-A Oklahoma City. He produced a combined .261 batting average with six homers and 34 RBI in the minors last year. Ruiz will share catching duties with Austin Barnes while Will Smith (neck) is unavailable.
Aug 15 2020Ruiz was called up for the first time by the Dodgers on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ruiz would be the catcher of the future in many organizations, though the presence of Will Smith, who landed on the injured list with neck inflammation in a corresponding move, prevents him from holding that title for the Dodgers. Still, he's a talented prospect, with strong contact ability offsetting a lack of power and a future as a roughly average defender. Just 22 years old, Ruiz is quite young for a catcher, and he didn't dominate the upper minors last season, hitting a merely decent .261/.331/.347 in 85 games in Double-A and Triple-A, so expectations should probably be muted for him this year.
Aug 13 2019Ruiz (finger) has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2019 season, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.
