Mar 27 2024Barrero was outrighted to Triple-A Round Rock on Wednesday after clearing waivers, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barrero will end up staying in the Texas organization and should see plenty of playing time at Round Rock this season as he makes the full-time transition to the outfield after spending most of his career to date as an infielder.
Mar 9 2024The Reds placed Barrero on waivers Saturday, and the utility player was claimed by the Rangers on the same day. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barrero split his time last season between Triple-A Louisville and the Reds and slashed .218/.295/.323 with two home runs and 17 RBI over 149 plate appearances in the majors. He made the move to the outfield this spring after spending most of his career at shortstop, though he did play center field in 17 games for Cincinnati last season. Barrero will now look to compete for an Opening Day roster spot in Texas for 2024.
Mar 4 2024Barrero, a one-time shortstop prospect, is attempting to earn a roster spot exclusively as an outfielder, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barrero started in right field Sunday and launched a home run in three plate appearances. He's made four Cactus League appearances -- three starts in right field and one in center. "I feel comfortable out there," Barrero said. "I'm glad that this organization has been giving me the opportunity to play several different positions in my time here." The Reds introduced him to the outfield in 2023, when he made 17 appearances in center field.
Jun 16 2023Barrero was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Friday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barrero will head to Louisville after spending the entirety of the 2023 campaign with then Reds to this point. He's struggled to a .218/.295/.323 slash line over 133 at-bats over 46 games and with Nick Senzel (knee) being activated from the 10-day injured list Friday, Barrero was the odd-man-out on the major-league roster. The 25-year-old will look to get into a groove with Louisville before potentially being recalled later this summer.
Jun 4 2023Barrero is not in the starting lineup versus the Brewers on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barrero is opening the game on the bench for the third straight game. The25-year-old will take a seat again with Will Benson getting the start in center and hitting eighth against Adrian Houser and the Reds.
Jun 3 2023Barrero isn't starting Saturday against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barrero will sit out his second consecutive game after going 4-for-17 with a home run and five RBI across his last five contests. Will Benson, Stuart Fairchild and Jake Fraley will start from left to right in Cincy's outfield Saturday.
Jun 2 2023Barrero is not in the starting lineup Friday versus the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barrero will take a seat after he went 2-for-8 with a homer, four RBI and two runs scored over the three-game series with the Red Sox. Stuart Fairchild will slide over to center while Will Benson enters the lineup in left field and bats eighth in the series opener with Milwaukee.
May 31 2023Barrero went 2-for-2 with a walk and a grand slam in Tuesday's 9-8 win over the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old began the game on the bench, but when TJ Friedl (hamstring) checked out early, Barrero took over in center field and gave the Reds what proved to be crucial insurance runs when he drove a Joely Rodriguez sinker off a light standard above the Green Monster in the seventh inning. It's his first career grand slam and only his second homer in 39 games this season, and while Cincy is trying to find ways to keep him in the lineup now that Matt McLain has taken over the starting shortstop role, Barrero and his mediocre .235/.313/.353 slash line could get bumped back to Triple-A when the team finally decides to promote Elly De La Cruz.
May 19 2023Barrero is starting in center field and batting ninth for the Reds on Friday against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's the first start in center field this month for Barrero, who has ceded his shortstop job to Matt McLain. Barrero sports just a .652 OPS on the season, although he did reach base four times in his last start.
May 15 2023Barrero is expected to cede the Reds' everyday shortstop duties to Matt McLain, who will be called up from Triple-A Louisville ahead of Monday's game against the Rockies, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Even while McLain had been in the minors, Barrero was already beginning to lose traction as the Reds' clear-cut top shortstop, as both he and Kevin Newman had made three starts apiece at the position over the past six games. Neither Barrero nor Newman have impressed defensively at shortstop this season, and while McLain isn't regarded as a polished defender at the position either and probably profiles as a second baseman over the long haul, the Reds are hoping the toolsy 23-year-old can provide an offensive upgrade over Barrero (.618 OPS in 104 plate appearances) and Newman (.596 OPS in 99 plate appearances). Newman is likely to remain a utility infielder once McLain's call-up is official, and though Barrero has a minor-league option remaining, the Reds may prefer to keep him on hand as insurance in center field while TJ Friedl is day-to-day with an oblique injury.
May 14 2023Barrero is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barrero went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Saturday's 6-5 win, but he also struck out three times and is now sitting on a 28.8 percent strikeout rate for the season. He's posted a modest .588 OPS over his last 15 games and could begin to lose work at shortstop to Kevin Newman, who will replace him in the lineup for the second time in four games.
May 11 2023Barrero is not in the starting lineup Thursday versus the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barrero will take a seat after he went 0-for-3 in Wednesday's contest, dropping his season-long batting average to .218. Kevin Newman will take over at shortstop and bat eighth in the series finale with New York.
May 5 2023Barrero isn't in the Reds' lineup for Friday's game against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With just a .588 OPS over his last five games, Barrero will take a seat to begin Friday's contest. Kevin Newman will take over for him at shortstop and bat eighth.
Mar 21 2021The Reds optioned Garcia to Triple-A Louisville on Sunday, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This isn't a surprise -- Garcia hadn't started any of the last seven games for the Reds and had moved Eugenio Suarez over to shortstop amid much fanfare. Garcia will get more time to develop the bat and is still very much in the Reds' long-term plans.
Feb 25 2021Garcia spent the offseason bulking up and working on his swing, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia is expected to begin the season back in the minors after being rushed in 2020, but the Reds didn't improve with a full-time major league offseason, opening the door for him to make the team, even if it's just a small chance. "We just have to be really thoughtful about doing what's best for Jose," manager David Bell said. "Obviously our goal is to win as a team. We'll have to see how it plays out. It wouldn't surprise me if he started in the Minor Leagues, and it wouldn't surprise me if he ended up being a big part of our Major League team this year."
Dec 16 2020Garcia could begin the 2021 season in the minors, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Garcia skipped multiple levels last season and hit a paltry .194/.206/.194 in 68 plate appearances. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia did receive high marks for his defense and for how he handled his slump, but it's pretty clear that he was overmatched at the plate. He walked just once against 26 strikeouts and didn't have an extra-base hit. Reds GM Nick Krall suggested that the team is hoping to add a shortstop this offseason from outside the organization.
Sep 21 2020Garcia isn't starting Monday against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia will remain out of the lineup for the second consecutive game despite recording seven hits in his last 21 at-bats. Freddy Galvis will take over at shortstop in his place.
Sep 20 2020Garcia is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 22-year-old's overall numbers are downright ugly, but Garcia has picked up a little momentum at the plate, recording seven hits in his last 21 at-bats. He will give way to Freddy Galvis at shortstop Sunday.
Sep 14 2020Garcia isn't in the lineup for Game 2 of Monday's doubleheader against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia went 2-for-3 with one run and a strikeout during the first game of the doubleheader. He'll get a breather with Kyle Farmer taking over at shortstop during the nightcap.
Sep 12 2020Garcia isn't in Saturday's lineup against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia went 1-for-8 with four strikeouts over the last two games, and he'll retreat to the bench Saturday. Kyle Farmer will serve as the shortstop in his place.
Sep 9 2020Garcia is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia will hit the bench for the second time in three games, this time giving way to Freddy Galvis at shortstop after Kyle Farmer received the nod in Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Pirates. Though the Reds don't appear ready to pull the plug on Garcia as their everyday shortstop just yet, the 22-year-old has gotten off to an underwhelming 5-for-34 (.147 average) start to his big-league career.
Sep 6 2020Garcia is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 22-year-old has struggled to find his footing in the big leagues early on, slashing .161/.188/.161 with one stolen base through nine games. He will sit Sunday after five consecutive starts, with Kyle Farmer stepping in at shortstop against right-hander Chad Kuhl.
Aug 31 2020Garcia isn't in Monday's lineup against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia drew the start at shortstop over the past two games and went 1-for-7 with four strikeouts. He'll take a breather Monday with Freddy Galvis starting at shortstop.
Aug 29 2020Garcia isn't starting the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia will take a seat for Game 1 of Saturday's twin bill after going 1-for-4 on Friday. Freddy Galvis will start at shortstop.
Aug 27 2020Garcia is not in the starting lineup for Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia went 1-for-2 with a single and walk in the first half of the twin bill, but will sit for at least the beginning of Game 2. Kyle Farmer will start at shortstop.
Aug 26 2020Garcia's contract was purchased by the Reds on Wednesday. He is starting at shortstop and hitting eighth against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garcia, one of the team's top prospects, is set to join the big club despite having never played above High-A. While the Reds will waste no time getting the 22-year-old into their lineup, it would be quite the feat if Garcia proved to be a quality big-league hitter in 2020 given his lack of experience above High-A. Pedro Strop was designated for assignment to free up a roster spot for Garcia.
Jul 15 2020Garcia could contribute in the majors this season, according to manager David Bell, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Bell noted how strong Garcia is coming on in camp, despite the fact he has never played above High-A. Another factor in Garcia's favor is that the Reds basically have nothing behind Freddy Galvis (who has been mentoring Garcia) at shortstop. This is a nice vote of confidence from Bell, but it would be borderline unprecedented for Garcia to skip over Double-A and Triple-A and be a quality big-league hitter in 2020 if he were forced into action due to his plus defense at shortstop.
