Jun 30 2025Crochet (8-4) earned the win after throwing six innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and one walk while striking out nine, during Monday's 13-6 win over the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: From a run prevention standpoint, Crochet had one of his worst outings of the season, tying a season high with five runs allowed. However, he was given a 7-0 lead before he threw his first pitch, so it proved not to matter. Even if some runs got on the board, the 26-year-old continued to befuddle batters as he struck out nine Reds to make it seven starts in a row with seven or more strikeouts. The left-hander continues to be one of the best in the game retiring batters via strikeout as he's leading all of MLB with 144 on the season.
Jun 24 2025Crochet allowed three hits and three walks while striking out 10 over seven innings in a no-decision Tuesday versus the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet was excellent, but the Boston offense supplied just one run of support while he was in the game. He's allowed one run or fewer in seven of his last 10 starts and in 10 of 17 starts overall. This was also his fourth double-digit strikeout game of the year. Crochet has a 2.06 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 135:31 K:BB across 109.1 innings. His next start is tentatively projected to be at home versus the Reds.
Jun 18 2025Crochet (7-4) picked up the win Wednesday, allowing one run on six hits over six innings in a 3-1 victory over the Mariners. He struck out eight without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw recorded his 10th quality start of the season on 96 pitches (70 strikes), including 17 swinging strikes. Crochet has provided the Red Sox with at least six inning in five straight trips to the mound, a stretch in which he's delivered a 2.65 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 47:6 K:BB through 34 innings. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, which lines up to come on the road early next week against the Angels.
Jun 13 2025Crochet did not factor into the decision in Friday's 2-1 extra-inning win over the Yankees, allowing one run on four hits and one walk with seven strikeouts over 8.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet was two outs away from a potential complete-game shutout before surrendering a solo home run to Aaron Judge. Despite the late blemish, he generated 15 whiffs on 107 pitches in the longest start of his young career. The southpaw currently leads the majors with 96.1 innings and 117 strikeouts while sporting a 2.24 ERA and 1.03 WHIP. He's slated to face the Mariners on the road next week.
Jun 7 2025Crochet (6-4) earned the win against the Yankees on Saturday, allowing five runs on six hits and one walk while striking out nine batters over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The five earned runs were a season-worst mark for Crochet, but he still managed to walk away with a victory thanks to a potent Boston offense. Much of the damage against the southpaw was inflicted by Austin Wells, who tagged Crochet for a three-run homer in the second inning and a run-scoring double in the fourth. Despite the damage to his ERA, Crochet impressed by inducing 15 whiffs and racking up nine punchouts, including three strikeouts of Aaron Judge. Crochet has fanned 32 batters across his past three starts and leads the majors with 110 punchouts on the season.
Jun 1 2025Crochet (5-4) earned the win Sunday against Atlanta, allowing one run on five hits and two walks across seven innings. He struck out 12. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet was dominant Sunday, allowing just a solo home run to Marcell Ozuna in the first inning before blanking Atlanta over his final six frames while recording a season-high 12 strikeouts. The 25-year-old Crochet has held opponents to two runs or fewer in 12 of his 13 outings this season. His ERA is down to 1.98 with a 1.06 WHIP and 101 strikeouts, tied with MacKenzie Gore for the MLB lead, across 82 innings this season. Crochet will have a tough test in his next outing, currently scheduled as a road matchup with the rival Yankees.
May 26 2025Crochet (4-4) took the loss in Monday's 3-2 defeat at the Brewers despite striking out 11 in 6.2 innings of work. He allowed two runs on five hits, also walking two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After surrendering a home run to Jackson Chourio, the first batter he faced, Crochet locked in and turned in yet another quality start. He has now posted six straight starts allowing two runs or fewer, and he has gone no fewer than five innings in any start all season. In those six outings (38 innings), Crochet is 2-2 with a 1.66 ERA and 45 strikeouts, looking every bit like the ace that the Red Sox acquired him to be in the offseason.
May 21 2025Crochet didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against the Mets, allowing one run on five hits and one walk with five strikeouts over 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet notched his fewest strikeouts in a start since Apr. 8, but he yielded fewer than three runs for a fifth straight start. The 26-year-old southpaw has a mediocre 4-3 record, but boasts a 1.98 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP and a 78/22 K:BB across 68.1 innings spanning 11 starts. Crochet is in line to face the Brewers in Milwaukee early next week.
May 16 2025Crochet (4-3) took the loss Friday against Atlanta after allowing two runs on seven hits and no walks in seven innings. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet punched out at least six in his seventh consecutive start, also tossing at least seven innings for the third time in his past four outings. The hard-throwing left-hander also got a whopping 19 whiffs Friday, but he did yield a season-high two home runs in what was a tough-luck loss amid a pitching duel with fellow southpaw Chris Sale. Crochet will take an outstanding 2.00 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 73:21 K:BB over 63 innings into a difficult matchup versus the Mets, which is slated for next week.
May 10 2025Crochet (4-2) earned the win against the Royals on Saturday, allowing one run on seven hits and one walk while striking out nine over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet generated 18 whiffs on 106 pitches (75 strikes), and he capped his night off by striking out Bobby Witt to escape a bases-loaded situation in the seventh inning. It was Crochet's fifth quality start of the season, and his 65 strikeouts are second most in the American League behind Carlos Rodon (67) while his 1.93 ERA ranks fifth among qualified starters. Crochet's next start is slated for next weekend at home against Atlanta.
May 4 2025Crochet did not factor into the decision in Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Twins, allowing one run on four hits and two walks with six strikeouts over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet rebounded from a leadoff home run to fire four straight scoreless frames, departing with a 3-1 lead that the bullpen couldn't hold. The southpaw has now completed at least five frames in each of his eight starts this season, yielding two earned runs or fewer in seven of them. He boasts a 2.02 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 56:20 K:BB across 49 innings and lines up for a road matchup with the Royals next weekend.
Apr 30 2025Crochet (3-2) got the win over the Blue Jays on Tuesday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out six in seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet was dominant outside of one troubling inning in the third, during which he gave up a double to Bo Bichette followed by a two-run homer to Vladimir Guerrero. Crochet went on to allow just one base hit the rest of the way and recorded his third start this season of at least seven innings. His command has been a bit shaky lately with eight walks over his last two starts, but Crochet still dons a stellar 2.05 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 50:18 K:BB in 44 innings. He lines up to complete a two-start week at home against Minnesota this weekend.
Apr 19 2025Crochet did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 4-3 extra-inning win over the White Sox, allowing four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts across six scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet dominated his former team for a second straight outing, departing with a 3-0 lead that his bullpen immediately surrendered in the seventh inning. The southpaw generated 17 whiffs on 96 pitches and has now yielded just four total earned runs through his first five starts of 2025. He'll take a 1.13 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 35:10 K:BB across 32 innings into a home matchup with the Mariners next week.
Apr 13 2025Crochet (2-1) yielded one run on a hit and a walk over 7.1 innings Sunday, striking out 11 and earning a win over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet was nearly untouchable Sunday; he was perfect through five innings and carried a no-hitter into the eighth. He was removed from the game after Chase Meidroth broke it up with a single and later came around to score with Garrett Whitlock on the mound. Crochet generated a season-high 18 whiffs, including 11 with his four-seamer that averaged 95.8 mph. He dropped his ERA to 1.38 with a 28:8 K:BB through 26 frames. Crochet's next outing is projected to be a rematch with the White Sox at home.
Apr 8 2025Crochet (1-1) yielded four runs (one earned) on five hits and four walks over 5.2 innings Tuesday, striking out five and taking a loss against Toronto. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet rolled through five scoreless frames before unraveling in the sixth inning. He coughed up a solo homer to George Springer before the Blue Jays scored three unearned runs in the inning. Crochet threw a career-high 107 pitches (65 strikes) and forced 11 whiffs. Despite the shaky performance, he owns a 1.45 ERA with a 17:7 K:BB through three starts. Crochet's next outing is projected to be on the road for his first career matchup against the White Sox.
Apr 2 2025Crochet (1-0) earned the win after throwing eight scoreless innings on four hits and one walk Wednesday against Baltimore. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After throwing five solid innings in his Red Sox debut on Opening Day against Texas, Crochet built on that showing Wednesday by spinning eight shutout frames and scattering four singles for a brilliant performance on the road. The hard-throwing southpaw has allowed just two runs to go with 12 punchouts over 13 innings so far this year. Crochet will look to keep the good times rolling in his next start, which is slated to come at home against Toronto early next week.
Mar 31 2025Crochet agreed to a six-year, $170 million contract extension with the Red Sox on Monday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Passan notes that this deal won't go into effect until the 2026 season and includes an opt-out clause following the 2030 campaign. Crochet is currently under contract on a one-year, $3.8 million agreement until the end of 2025 and made only one start with Boston before the two sides were able to come together on a long-term contract.
Mar 27 2025Crochet didn't factor into the decision after giving up two runs on five hits and two walks in five innings Thursday against Texas. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his regular-season Red Sox debut, the hard-throwing left-hander fired five solid innings against a righty-dominant Rangers lineup. Boston didn't grab the lead until the ninth inning, keeping Crochet out of the win column Thursday. Crochet is set to take the hill Wednesday in another tough matchup against the Orioles on the road, and he'll be looking to further build on his early success with his new team after also allowing a lone run with a whopping 30 punchouts in 15.2 innings during spring training.
Mar 22 2025Crochet allowed five hits and two walks while striking out nine over 5.1 scoreless innings in Friday's spring start against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet finished up the Grapefruit League on a strong note, exactly as he began it. The left-hander dominated through five spring outings, giving up just one run in 15.2 innings (0.57 ERA) with 30 strikeouts and eight walks. Crochet will next pitch Opening Day against the Rangers.
Mar 17 2025Crochet allowed one run on two hits and one walk while striking out seven over four-plus innings in Sunday's spring start against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A day after being named Boston's Opening Day starter, Crochet showed in his fourth Grapefruit League start why he was given the honor. The left-hander threw four scoreless frames before letting the first two batters reach base to lead off the fifth. One of his runners came in the score -- the first run Crochet has allowed over 10.1 spring innings.
Mar 15 2025Manager Alex Cora confirmed Saturday that Crochet will start Opening Day against the Rangers, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After throwing 6.1 shutout innings in spring training, Crochet has officially earned the honor of starting on the bump Opening Day for his new team. His Red Sox debut will come against a Rangers squad that finished 11th in the American League with a .685 OPS last season but has brought that number up to .790 this spring.
Mar 7 2025Crochet allowed two hits and one walk while striking out seven over three scoreless innings in Wednesday's spring game against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet cruised through his third Grapefruit League start and finished it in style by striking out the side in his third and final inning. The left-hander has not allowed a run over 6.1 spring innings while striking out 14.
Feb 23 2025Crochet allowed no runs on three hits and one walk over 1.2 innings during Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander was on a pitch count for his first spring game, with his departure in the midst of the second inning also being the result of a long wait between his first and second frames, per Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald. Crochet had a limited workload last year with the White Sox in his first season as a full-time starter, but he was still one of the top breakout players in MLB with a 3.58 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 209:33 K:BB across 146 innings. The 25-year-old isn't expected to face any workload restrictions in 2025 after being acquired by the Red Sox.
Jan 9 2025The Red Sox and Crochet avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.8 million contract Thursday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There appears to be mutual interest between the Red Sox and Crochet in working out a long-term contract extension, but for now the two sides will settle for avoiding an arbitration hearing. Crochet put up a 3.58 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 209:33 K:BB over 146 innings in 2024 with the White Sox in his first year as a full-time starter.
Dec 16 2024Crochet said last Friday that he doesn't intend to have any radical change to his pitch mix for the upcoming season, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet toyed with a sinker late last season and felt it gave him a fifth pitch to throw at any time, but the left-hander indicated he won't deviate much from the four-seamer/cutter usage this season. He made quite the jump in 2024, moving from the bullpen to the rotation while throwing 146 innings over 32 starts. Crochet projects as Boston's No. 1 starter.
Dec 11 2024The Red Sox acquired Crochet from the White Sox on Wednesday in exchange for Kyle Teel, Braden Montgomery, Chase Meidroth and Wikelman Gonzalez, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Red Sox missed out on free-agent lefties Max Fried and Blake Snell but have reeled in a big rotation addition via the trade route. Crochet, 25, had a breakout 2024 season in his first year as a starter, collecting a 3.58 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 209:33 K:BB over 146 innings. He is projected to earn around $3 million in 2025 and will be under team control in 2026, as well.
Sep 28 2024Crochet didn't factor into the decision Friday against Detroit, allowing four hits and a walk over four scoreless innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet's workload decreased dramatically down the stretch, though he was still impressive in limited work, allowing just one run over 12 innings in his final three outings. It was a breakthrough season overall for the left-hander, who proved to be one of the White Sox's few bright spots. Crochet will finish the year at 6-12 with a 3.58 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 209:33 K:BB across 146 innings.
Sep 20 2024Crochet allowed one hit and struck out eight without walking a batter over four scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Padres on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet's workload limit continues to shrink -- he threw 38 of 52 pitches for strikes in this impressive but short outing. He's reached four innings in seven of his 12 outings since he was placed on a pitch count, but he hasn't gone farther over that span. Overall, Crochet has a 3.68 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 203:32 K:BB through 142 innings over 31 starts. His last outing is projected to be a home start versus the Angels next week, though he shouldn't be expected to throw more than 50 pitches or last long enough to qualify for a win.
Sep 13 2024Crochet (6-12) took the loss Friday, allowing one run on three hits and no walks over four innings against Oakland. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Chicago southpaw was saddled with his third straight loss despite this solid 56-pitch performance as his innings continue to be limited while the season winds down. Crochet has not reached the fifth inning in his last 12 starts, as he sets a career high in innings pitched with each out he makes. Things haven't been pretty over those dozen outings either. The 25-year-old has gone 0-6 with a 5.89 ERA and 1.53 WHIP across 36.2 innings over that span. He is currently projected to make his next short start against the Angels on the road next week.
Sep 7 2024Crochet (6-11) allowed four runs on five hits and a walk while striking out three over two innings to take the loss versus the Red Sox on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet's workload continues to drop as part of the White Sox's plan to trim his innings. He wasn't particularly good in this game either -- he needed 51 pitches to get through two frames, laboring through a four-run first inning by Boston. While he's maintained a 3.83 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 191:32 K:BB over 134 innings across 29 starts this season, his current workload all but guarantees he won't pitch deep enough to be eligible for wins unless he's ultra-efficient. His next start is projected to be at home versus the Athletics, but Crochet has limited fantasy utility over the remainder of 2024.
Sep 1 2024Crochet (6-10) allowed one run on three hits while striking out eight over 3.1 innings in a loss to the Mets on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet struck out the first seven batters he faced and saw the minimum through three innings. Francisco Lindor opened up the fourth with a home run, and Crochet wasn't afforded the opportunity to finish the inning after allowing two more base hits and eventually being pulled with one out in the frame after throwing just 57 pitches. The hard-throwing lefty hasn't reached five innings in a start since June 30, but he now has 21 strikeouts over his last 11.1 frames. For the year, Crochet owns a 3.61 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 188:31 K:BB in 132 innings. He lines up to make his next start on the road against the Red Sox over the weekend.
Aug 30 2024Crochet is scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Mets at Guaranteed Rate Field. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Even though Crochet tossed just four pitches in his most recent start Tuesday against the Rangers prior to the game being suspended due to inclement weather, the White Sox still treated it as a full turn through the rotation. He'll return to the mound Sunday on four days' rest, but despite his light usage Tuesday, Crochet shouldn't be expected to work deep into his upcoming outing. Over his last nine starts, Crochet hasn't covered more than four innings in any outing and owns a 5.93 ERA and 1.61 WHIP during that stretch.
Aug 28 2024Crochet threw four pitches in his start Tuesday against the Rangers before the game was suspended due to inclement weather. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The White Sox and Rangers will resume the suspended game as part of a doubleheader Wednesday, but Crochet isn't expected to be available for either contest after he went through a full warmup before Tuesday's contest was called in the top of the first inning. Per LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune, Chris Flexen is slated to "start" in the resumption of the suspended game Wednesday, while the White Sox are likely to treat the originally scheduled game as a bullpen day. The White Sox haven't revealed when Crochet might pitch next, but assuming he sticks to his usual four-day rest schedule, he would tentatively line up to make his next start Sunday versus the Mets. Crochet has now covered four innings or less in each of his last nine starts, making it difficult to extract much fantasy value from him.
Aug 21 2024Crochet allowed two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out four batters over four innings in a no-decision against San Francisco on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: White Sox interim manager Grady Sizemore announced Wednesday that Crochet will be be on a workload limit for the rest of the campaign, so it's no surprise that he was pulled after four innings consisting of 57 pitches Wednesday. The left-hander may have gone a bit longer, though, if he hadn't faded in his final frame, allowing a pair of runs on three hits after beginning his outing with three scoreless, one-hit innings. Crochet did manage a healthy 11 whiffs despite his low pitch count, and his four punchouts pushed him to 180 on the campaign. He still has a good chance to reach 200 strikeouts by the end of the season, but even that's not a given since Sizemore said Wednesday that Crochet's workload could "slowly decrease" as the season winds down.
Aug 17 2024Crochet allowed a run on four hits over four innings in a no-decision Friday. He struck out nine during the victory against Houston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet coughed up a run in the third inning but managed to produce a ridiculous 17 whiffs on just 55 pitches. Of those 17 swinging strikes, 11 came via the four-seam fastball, which averaged 97.7 mph. Crochet seems to be on a strict innings limit as he hasn't thrown more than four innings in any start since the beginning of July. During that span, he's posted a 6.17 ERA while punching out 35 batters across 23.1 frames. His next start is lined up to be in San Francisco.
Aug 10 2024Crochet (6-9) took the loss Friday as the White Sox fell 7-6 to the Cubs, coughing up seven runs on nine hits -- including four home runs -- over 2.1 innings. He struck out five without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw did manage to generate 15 swinging strikes among his 67 pitches (45 total strikes), but Crochet got tattooed when he left the ball over the plate as he served up multiple homers for the first time since April 19. The White Sox are trying to limit his workload over the final months of a lost season, but Crochet seems to be fading regardless -- he hasn't worked more than four innings in any of his last six outings and has an 0-3 record, 6.98 ERA, 1.81 WHIP and 26:10 K:BB over 19.1 innings during that span to show for it. His fantasy value is questionable as long as the ChiSox continue with their current plan for him, as he has almost no chance at a win unless the team decides to try using an opener ahead of him, with a strong K/9 being his only real asset. Crochet lines up to make his next start on the road next weekend in Houston.
Aug 3 2024Crochet allowed one run on one hit and four walks while striking out two batters over four innings in a no-decision against Minnesota on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet gave up only one hit (though it was a solo homer), but he struggled with his control, throwing just 43 of 77 pitches for strikes and issuing a season-high four walks. That likely was a major factor in the left-hander getting pulled after four frames, though it can't be glossed over that he's thrown nearly 100 more innings this season than he did in 2022 (when he missed the entire campaign) and 2023 combined. The White Sox stated in late July that they don't intend to shut down Crochet or move him to the bullpen, but he hasn't pitched more than four innings or thrown more than 77 pitches in any of his past five starts while experiencing a clear downturn in his performance. His season numbers (3.19 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 162 Ks) are still great, but Crochet's fantasy managers should anticipate a managed workload moving forward, and those in redraft leagues may want to consider getting what they can for him rather than waiting for a bounce-back.
Jul 28 2024Crochet (6-8) yielded five runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk over three innings Sunday, striking out three and taking a loss against Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet served up a two-run homer to Cal Raleigh in the first inning and never found his groove. Crochet was handed his second straight loss and has not earned a win since June 7. While he's reportedly still expected to receive a "normal workload," he's totaled just 13 innings through four starts this month. During that stretch, he's produced a 4.85 ERA while averaging just under 65 pitches per start. Crochet owns a 3.23 ERA with a terrific 160:26 K:BB through 114.1 innings this season. He's tentatively lined up to start in Minnesota next weekend, though the upcoming trade deadline could change those plans.
Jul 25 2024The White Sox do not plan to move Crochet to the bullpen or shut him down this season, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Heyman also writes that Crochet will be on a "normal workload as a starter" until the end of the regular season. However, given that manager Pedro Grifol went on record last month that Crochet's workload would be managed, Heyman might just be referring to the pitcher continuing to take regular turns in the rotation. The lefty being pulled early from outings still seems likely. Of course, if/when Crochet is traded, the plan could change. Interestingly, Heyman also adds that Crochet would request a contract extension from the team that acquires him in order to agree to pitch in October. Crochet has already thrown 111.1 innings in 2024, which is 26 more than he had thrown in his entire pro career coming into the season.
Jul 24 2024Crochet (6-7) took the loss Tuesday against the Rangers, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks across four innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet threw only 74 pitches Tuesday, a result of the White Sox monitoring his workload down the stretch of the 25-year-old's first season as a starter. Both runs attributed to Crochet came in the first inning, with Adolis Garcia plating Robbie Grossman on a single and Josh Smith stealing home during a double steal. Crochet hasn't gone deeper than four innings in his last three starts, and he's logged a 3.07 ERA with 157 strikeouts in 111.1 innings on the year. The left-hander is tentatively scheduled to face the Mariners on Sunday.
Jul 13 2024Crochet didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 4-1 loss to the Pirates, striking out four in two perfect innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: White Sox manager Pedro Grifol had indicated Crochet would be on a pitch count for this outing, but the extremely quick hook kept the left-hander from putting together what might have been an exceptional performance -- he fired 22 of 28 pitches for strikes before exiting, including seven swinging strikes. Chicago is focused on Crochet's long-term health, or at least in keeping him healthy until the trade deadline, and the 25-year-old isn't expected to take the mound again until July 23 on the road against the Rangers.
Jul 12 2024Manager Pedro Grifol said Crochet will be on an unspecified innings and pitch count Friday against the Pirates. Additionally, Crochet will be the fifth starter used by the White Sox after the All-Star break, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet is nearly halfway through his first season as a starter and he's already thrown 105.1 innings, so the White Sox are taking steps to limit his workload. The 25-year-old's name has also been thrown around plenty in trade rumors, so it's not entirely surprising to see Chicago proceed with caution. Grifol didn't specify how long Crochet would be able to pitch Friday, or if the restrictions would continue. If Crochet does end up being used as the team's fifth pitcher coming out of the All-Star break, he'd be on schedule to face the Rangers in Texas on 10 days rest.
Jul 6 2024Crochet allowed two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five over four innings in a no-decision versus the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet failed to complete five innings for the first time since April 24. He wasn't efficient Saturday, requiring 93 pitches (65 strikes) to get through his four frames, though he did a decent job of limiting the damage. It's a rare misstep for the southpaw, who is now at a 3.08 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 146:23 K:BB over 105.1 innings through 19 starts this season. Crochet is projected to make his next start at home versus the Pirates.
Jun 30 2024Crochet came away with a no-decision Sunday against the Rockies, allowing two earned runs on five hits and zero walks while striking out 11 over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet's workload was a major question entering this outing -- reports earlier this week stated his workload was "going to start dwindling". The 25-year-old threw 88 pitches and made it through seven-plus innings for the third time this season, temporarily quieting the concerns. The White Sox will be cautious with Crochet ahead of the trade deadline, but he remains a must-start as long as he is active. The southpaw owns a 3.02 ERA, a 0.93 WHIP and a league-leading 141 strikeouts over 101.1 innings this season. He is tentatively scheduled for a road start in Miami next weekend.
Jun 26 2024White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said Tuesday of Crochet that "we're going to start dwindling his workload down a little bit," the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet already sits at 94.1 innings in 2024 in his first pro season as a starting pitcher. He threw zero innings in 2022 and just 25 frames in 2023 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, and his highest innings total in college at Tennessee was 65. Therefore, his workload being curtailed at some point was inevitable. Grifol didn't divulge any specifics in regards to pitch counts or innings totals for Crochet, indicating he'll be flexible start-to-start based on how efficient the pitcher is. The manager also didn't mention anything about Crochet being shut down completely at some point, although it's certainly possible that will happen. It's not an ideal situation for fantasy managers, but those rostering Crochet will want to keep him in their lineups as long as he's making starts.
Jun 24 2024Crochet took a no-decision against the Dodgers on Monday, allowing five hits and striking out six batters over 5.2 scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet was on his game with 16 whiffs and six punchouts against one of MLB's top offenses, but Dodgers starter James Paxton traded scoreless frames with him, and both hurlers had to settle for a no-decision. Crochet continues to impress in what has been a breakout first campaign as a starter -- he lowered his ERA to 3.05 with Monday's outing and ranks second in the league with 130 strikeouts. The southpaw has given up three or fewer earned runs while going at least five frames in 11 consecutive starts.
Jun 19 2024Crochet (6-6) took the loss against Houston on Wednesday, allowing three runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out eight batters over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet racked up a hearty 19 whiffs and eight punchouts, but it wasn't enough to keep him out of the loss column in a contest during which he was supported with just one run. The fact that the three earned runs were the most the left-hander has allowed since April 24 speaks volumes about the quality of his campaign thus far. Crochet has tallied six consecutive quality starts and is tied for 10th in the majors with 10 total on the campaign. He also ranks second in the league with 124 punchouts while posting a 3.25 ERA and 0.95 WHIP through 88.2 innings.
Jun 14 2024Crochet allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out 13 batters over seven innings in a no-decision against Seattle on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet was absolutely dominant in the outing, inducing 24 swinging strikes and finishing with a career-high 13 punchouts. The only run against the southpaw came via Tyler Locklear's first career homer in the fifth inning, and Crochet was in line for the victory before Michael Kopech blew a save opportunity in the ninth. Despite a few rough starts in April, Crochet has been a revelation for the White Sox and for fantasy managers this season. Over his past nine starts, he's recorded a 1.36 ERA, 0.74 WHIP and 76:11 K:BB over 53 innings. Crochet is tied with Tyler Glasnow for the major-league lead with 116 punchouts on the campaign.
Jun 7 2024Crochet (5-4) yielded two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks over six innings Friday, striking out 10 and earning a win over the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet gave up a pair of runs in the third inning but only one was earned due to his own throwing error. He's produced quality starts in four straight appearances and six of his last seven. Crochet generated 17 whiffs and racked up double-digit strikeouts for the fourth time this season. Since April 29, he's produced a ridiculous 1.37 ERA with a 63:9 K:BB in eight starts. Crochet will carry a 3.33 ERA into his next start, which is expected to be in Seattle next week.
Jun 1 2024Crochet didn't factor into the decision in an extra-inning loss to the Brewers on Saturday, allowing one run on five hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet's now logged quality starts in five of his last six outings, posting a stellar 1.03 ERA in that span (35 innings). The 24-year-old left-hander continues to provide a bright spot on a rebuilding White Sox team -- Crochet's ERA is down to 3.49 on the year with a 0.93 WHIP and 93 strikeouts, good for second most in the league. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, currently slated for next week at home against Boston.
May 26 2024Crochet (5-5) allowed two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out 11 over six innings to take the loss Sunday versus the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet was able to extend his scoreless streak to 24 innings, which began with his last two frames versus the Cardinals on May 5. It came to a close when Adley Rutschman took him deep in the sixth inning of Sunday's contest, and that was enough to snap Crochet's four-start winning streak as well. On the bright side, he earned a fifth straight quality start and reached double-digit strikeouts for the third time this year. Crochet is at a 3.68 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 85:14 K:BB through 63.2 innings over 12 starts this season. He's projected to make his next start on the road versus the Brewers.
May 21 2024Crochet (5-4) picked up the win Tuesday against Toronto, allowing two hits and one walk with four strikeouts over six scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet has tossed 17 consecutive scoreless innings and earned a victory in each of his last four starts. While he fanned fewer than six batters for the first time in five starts, the 25-year-old retired the first 13 batters he faced. Since his ERA peaked at 6.37 on April 24, Crochet has yielded three runs over 28.0 innings to lower his ERA to 3.75 overall. He's lined up to close out the two-start week Sunday against the Orioles.
May 15 2024Crochet (4-4) picked up the win in Wednesday's 2-0 victory over the Nationals, giving up three hits and three walks over five scoreless innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander wasn't exactly efficient, tossing only 56 of 89 pitches for strikes, but Crochet lasted long enough to qualify for the win. After a rough stretch in April, the 24-year-old has allowed only three runs over his last three starts (1.59 ERA) with a stellar 24:1 K:BB in 17 innings. Crochet will look to keep rolling in his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road early next week in Toronto.
May 10 2024Crochet (3-4) yielded five hits over six shutout frames Friday, striking out 11 and earning a win over the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet carved through Cleveland's lineup with ease Friday, setting new career bests with 11 strikeouts and 21 whiffs. He seems to be fully back on track after struggling during the middle of April. He gave up 17 runs over an ugly three-start stretch but has allowed just three runs while registering a 24:1 K:BB over his last three outings. Crochet lowered his season ERA to 4.63 with an outstanding 64:9 K:BB through 46.2 frames. He's currently in line for a home matchup with the Nationals next week.
May 5 2024Crochet (2-4) earned the win after he pitched six innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out six batters in Sunday's 5-1 victory over the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet was able to make it back-to-back strong outings Sunday, limiting the Cardinals to just one run on a fourth-inning solo home run by Willson Contreras. The left-hander secured his first quality start since April 3 in the win and he has now allowed just three runs over 11 innings in his last two outings. Crochet will carry a 5.31 ERA and 11.7 K/9 into his next projected start Friday at home versus the Guardians.
Apr 29 2024Crochet didn't factor into the decision Monday, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk across five innings against the Twins. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After surrendering five or more runs in three straight starts, Crochet snapped out of the funk and only allowed the Twins to score on a two-run homer by Carlos Santana in the second frame. Crochet also had strong command, walking just one batter after yielding seven walks and two hit-by-pitches in his last three outings. Although Crochet has been inconsistent to kick off 2024, his strikeout stuff has been elite, boasting the second most K's in baseball. He's lined up for a Saturday start against the Cardinals.
Apr 24 2024Crochet (1-4) took the loss Wednesday, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks over four innings against the Twins. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet surrendered at least five runs for a third straight start, each of which lasted less than five innings and resulted in a loss for Crochet. After an impressive start to the season (four earned runs over 18.0 innings), Crochet has been equally unimpressive in his last three appearances, yielding 17 earned runs over 11.2 innings. Overall, Crochet owns a 6.37 ERA and 40:8 K:BB in six starts, and he's lined up for a rematch with the Twins on Monday.
Apr 19 2024Crochet (1-3) took the loss Friday against the Phillies, allowing seven runs on five hits and two walks across three innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet was done in by the home-run ball Friday -- he allowed a pair of three-run homers to Alec Bohm before Whit Merrifield led off the fourth with a solo shot, forcing Crochet out of the game. After an excellent start this year, the 24-year-old lefthander has now allowed 12 runs over 7.2 innings in his last two outings. Crochet's ERA is up to 5.61 despite an excellent 1.01 WHIP and 34:6 K:BB across five starts (25.2 innings). He'll look to bounce back in his next outing, currently scheduled for next week in Minnesota.
Apr 13 2024Crochet (1-2) took the loss to the Reds on Saturday, allowing five runs on four hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out 10. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet was close to getting out of the second inning with only a couple earned runs allowed, but he had a few borderline calls go against him with two outs, and Spencer Steer cashed in with a three-run double. It was still an impressive performance in terms of whiffs, and through four career starts Crochet has a 3.57 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 31:4 K:BB in 22.2 innings. His transition to the starting rotation has gone about as well as anyone could have hoped for to date, but the team context is a mark against him and his schedule doesn't get any easier in the short term with a trip to Philadelphia on tap for next week.
Apr 8 2024Crochet allowed two runs on three hits while striking out five over five innings Sunday against the Royals. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet continued his excellent stretch to begin the season, generating 15 whiffs while not walking a batter for the second time in three starts. The lone damage against him came off a fifth-inning two-run homer off the bat of Hunter Renfroe. Crochet currently leads the majors with 21 strikeouts and 18 innings pitched. He's found something with his slider with seven of his 15 whiffs Sunday coming from that pitch. The 25-year-old lefty will look to keep things going in a home meeting with the Reds this upcoming week.
Apr 3 2024Crochet (1-1) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits and a walk over seven innings in a 3-2 victory over Atlanta. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: That's now back-to-back quality starts and back-to-back eight-strikeout performances for Crochet, as the left-hander makes the White Sox look like geniuses for moving him into the rotation. He blanked one of the most potent offenses in baseball for six innings before Marcell Ozuna finally tagged him for a solo shot in the seventh. Crochet left the mound having generated 18 swinging strikes on his 93 pitches, and through his first two career starts he sports a 1.38 ERA, 0.69 WHIP and 16:1 K:BB through 13 innings. He tentatively lines up to make his next trip to the mound this weekend in Kansas City.
Mar 28 2024Crochet (0-1) went six innings, allowing one run on five hits and did not walk a batter to earn the defeat in Thursday's Opening Day 1-0 loss to the Tigers. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was an impressive performance for Crochet, who earned the Opening Day nod despite having never made a start in his previous 72 big league outings. The lefty struck out eight while going toe-to-toe with Kansas City's Tarik Skubal, who also tossed six innings but didn't yield a single run. Crochet is set for a tougher matchup his next time out, currently slated to take place mid-week against Atlanta in the friendly confines of Guaranteed Rate Field.
Mar 18 2024The White Sox announced Monday that Crochet will start the team's season opener March 28 versus the Tigers in Chicago. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A converted reliever who has yet to make a big-league start and is just under two years removed from Tommy John surgery, Crochet is a bold choice for the Opening Day starting nod. The White Sox's decision to go with Crochet for the season opener speaks to the organization's lack of attractive alternatives, though the 24-year-old lefty at least brings some upside to the table. After struggling with his control late last season when he rejoined the White Sox bullpen following his recovery from elbow surgery, Crochet has looked far sharper this spring, striking out 12 and walking none while working around seven hits across nine scoreless frames. Fantasy managers shouldn't jump to any grand conclusions based on the spring numbers, but the improved results along with the White Sox's commitment to him in a starting role are enough to put Crochet on the radar as a late-round target in fantasy drafts.
Mar 16 2024Crochet has thrown nine scoreless innings in Cactus League action while maintaining a 12:0 K:BB. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet has pitched exclusively out of the bullpen to this point in his big-league career, but the team has committed to stretching him out this spring. His last outing came Thursday against the Angels, during which he allowed only two hits and struck out three across three frames. Neither the White Sox nor Crochet have confirmed that he's set to begin he season in the rotation, but the departure of Dylan Cease will further enhance his chances.
Feb 27 2024Crochet threw 34 pitches and completed 1.2 innings in his Cactus League debut against the Dodgers on Tuesday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet returned from Tommy John surgery early last season, but he also faced shoulder trouble that limited him to only 25 total innings combined between the majors and minors. Despite the limited workload, he's attempting to land a role in the White Sox's rotation to begin the season. He made a good impression in his first spring outing, retiring Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman to begin the game. Crochet also touched 99 mph and 100 mph with his fastball, a good sign that his arm is back to full strength.
Feb 12 2024White Sox general manager Chris Getz on Monday didn't rule out Crochet beginning the season in the major-league rotation, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Getz added that he expects Crochet to be on the Opening Day roster in some fashion, whether that's in the rotation or perhaps in a long relief role as he gets stretched back out to start. All 84 of Crochet's appearances in pro ball to this point have come in relief, so getting his stamina built up at the big-league level will be tricky.
Jan 11 2024Crochet signed a one-year, $800,000 contract with the White Sox on Thursday to avoid arbitration. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet charted a 3.55 ERA and 1.97 WHIP through 12.2 MLB innings last year, though shoulder issues limited Crochet to just 25 total appearances between the majors and minors. White Sox general manager Chris Getz said Tuesday that the team plans on using Crochet as a starter in 2024, though it's unclear whether he will be stretched out in the big leagues or in Chicago's minor-league system.
Jan 9 2024White Sox general manager Chris Getz revealed Tuesday that Crochet is preparing to be a starting pitcher in 2024, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Getz admits that it will take a while for Crochet to be appropriately stretched out to start, but it's the role the club has planned for him. It's not clear at this point whether the stretching-out phase will occur in the majors or minors, or both. Crochet missed all of the 2022 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery and was limited to 25 appearances between the majors and minors in 2023 due to a shoulder problem, although he ended the year with a clean bill of health. The southpaw has made 84 appearances in pro ball (72 in the majors), and all of them have been out of the bullpen.
Sep 23 2023Crochet (0-2) allowed one earned run on two hits and a walk while striking out one across 0.2 innings to take the loss Friday against the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet made his first appearance since being activated from the injured list Wednesday after battling a shoulder injury. He was called upon to protect a one-run lead in the eighth inning, but he allowed an inherited runner to score after allowing a single and walk. He gave up a run of his own two batters later, so the performance left plenty to be desired. However, with the White Sox out of playoff contention, their primary focus is getting the young reliever some work prior to the close of the regular season.
Sep 20 2023Crochet (shoulder) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet is returning from his rehab assignment at Triple-A Charlotte. The reliever has not made an appearance in the majors since June 15, when he suffered a shoulder injury. He struck out 10 while allowing one hit and zero walks over four scoreless innings during this latest rehab assignment.
Sep 18 2023Crochet (shoulder) is close to being activated from the injured list, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Per the report Crochet will throw a bullpen session at some point during Chicago's three-game series against Washington that begins Monday, and if all goes well he will likely rejoin the roster shortly after that.
Sep 13 2023Crochet (shoulder) advanced his rehab assignment Wednesday from Double-A Birmingham to Triple-A Charlotte, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet struck out five batters and issued no walks over two scoreless -- and hitless -- innings of relief at the Double-A level. Out since June 20 due to left shoulder inflammation, he could return to the White Sox as early as this weekend.
Sep 7 2023Crochet (shoulder) re-started a rehab assignment with Double-A Birmingham on Wednesday, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander has been sidelined since late June with shoulder inflammation and had to be pulled off his initial rehab assignment following a setback. Crochet struck out a pair in a perfect frame for the Barons on Wednesday in what was his first appearance in exactly two months. He's hoping to rejoin the White Sox' bullpen before the end of the season.
Aug 7 2023Crochet said July 29 that he was diagnosed with a left shoulder strain after being pulled of his rehab assignment and expects to remain shut down for 2-to-3 weeks before he resumes a throwing program at the White Sox's spring training facility in Arizona, MLB.com reports. "I just want to take this comeback slow and don't want to rush anything. I still plan to pitch at some point at the end of the year," Crochet said. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet was initially forced to the 15-day injured list June 20 with what the White Sox labeled as shoulder inflammation, and he looked as though he would have a chance to return in early August after he was cleared to begin a rehab assignment following the All-Star break. However, he never ended up making any appearances in the minors after feeling soreness in his shoulder July 21 before he was diagnosed with a more significant injury. Since he's unlikely to resume throwing until at least the middle of August and is expected to be built up slowly, Crochet probably won't be an option in the White Sox bullpen until early September, in a best-case scenario. The timing of Crochet's injury is particularly inconvenient, as he may have been in the mix for saves for the White Sox in the wake of closer Liam Hendricks undergoing season-ending Tommy John surgery.
Jul 26 2023Crochet (shoulder) is feeling better and is projected to return from the injured list in early August, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet was taken off a rehab assignment July 21, though he quickly recovered from soreness in his shoulder. There has been no word on the resumption of his rehab assignment, but the team remains hopeful that he'll be able to contribute out of the bullpen for roughly the final two months of the campaign.
Jul 21 2023Crochet (shoulder) was pulled off his rehab assignment Friday due to a recurrence of left shoulder inflammation, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet had made two rehab appearances and looked to be on track to return to the White Sox bullpen early next week, but now his IL stint seems certain to extend into August. The 24-year-old reliever has been on the shelf since June 20 because of left shoulder trouble.
Jul 4 2023Crochet (shoulder) will pitch multiple innings during his next rehab appearance with Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Pedro Grifol said the White Sox will need multi-inning contributions from Crochet once the 24-year-old lefty returns from the injured list, so Thursday's outing will help get Crochet prepared for his new role. Crochet pitched just two-thirds of an inning in his first rehab appearance and has thrown two full innings once in the majors this season.
Jun 21 2023Crochet received a cortisone shot Wednesday to treat the inflammation in his left shoulder, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Early estimates put Crochet somewhere between 2-to-3 weeks out from returning to game action, making it likely he returns shortly after the All-Star break. The 24-year-old lefty already missed over a month earlier this year while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Jun 20 2023The White Sox placed Crochet on the 15-day injured list Tuesday (retroactive to June 17) with left shoulder inflammation. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This marks the second IL stint of the season for Crochet, who previously missed the first month and a half of the season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He will now be shelved again until the beginning of July while Jimmy Lambert (ankle) returns from the injured list to replace Crochet in the bullpen.
May 16 2023The White Sox activated Crochet (elbow) from the 15-day injured list Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet has reached the finish line in his long road to recovery from Tommy John surgery and will be available out of Chicago's bullpen Tuesday night against the Guardians. The 23-year-old left-hander posted a 2.54 ERA with 73 strikeouts across his first 60.1 major-league innings between the 2020-2021 seasons. His rehab assignment was a bit rocky, but Crochet could quickly take on a high-leverage setup role with a White Sox team that has gotten off to a dreadful 14-28 start.
May 9 2023Crochet (elbow) is moving up to Triple-A Charlotte to continue his rehab assignment, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet was knocked around for four runs on five hits and three walks over 3.1 innings covering three rehab appearances with Double-A Binghamton. More important is that he seems to be feeling healthy as he nears the end of his long rehab from Tommy John surgery. Crochet is preparing to serve as a multi-inning reliever with the White Sox.
May 3 2023White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said Wednesday that Crochet (elbow) will be stretched out to handle multiple innings on his rehab assignment, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet was lit up for three earned runs while recording only one out in his second rehab appearance Tuesday with Double-A Birmingham, though he did toss a perfect frame in his rehab debut Sunday. The 23-year-old left-hander is on the road back from Tommy John surgery and will apparently return as a multi-inning relief option for the White Sox whenever he's deemed fit to do so. The current timetable points toward mid-May.
Apr 28 2023Crochet (elbow) is set to begin a rehab assignment Sunday with Double-A Birmingham, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet checked out well in his followup visit with team doctors Thursday and got the go-ahead to return to live competition. Now nearly 13 months removed from Tommy John surgery, the talented young lefty reliever should be an option for the White Sox bullpen sometime in May.
Apr 27 2023Crochet (elbow) is in Chicago with the White Sox getting a checkup in hopes of being approved to begin a rehab assignment, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet is seeing the light at the end of the tunnel in the long road back from Tommy John surgery. The hard-throwing left-hander's rehab assignment figures to be fairly lengthy given how much time he's missed, but he should eventually return to being a valuable late-inning relief arm.
Mar 30 2023Crochet was placed on the 15-day injured list by the White Sox on Thursday with a left elbow UCL tear. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet missed all of 2022 and will get a late start to 2023 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He's throwing off a mound, though, and it would seem to be a good sign that he hasn't been placed on the 60-day IL.
Feb 25 2023Crochet (elbow) is raising the intensity of his weekly bullpen sessions, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet had been throwing two bullpen sessions per week but with a lower level of intensity. His timeline to return from Tommy John surgery remains in mid-May, though the White Sox also clarified that the plan is for Crochet to pitch in extended spring training games before going on a rehab assignment with a minor-league affiliate.
Feb 15 2023The White Sox expect Crochet (elbow) to return in mid-May, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty, nearing the end of his recovery from Tommy John surgery, will sit out the White Sox's Cactus League slate before likely beginning a rehab assignment in April. Crochet posted a 2.82 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 54.1 relief innings in 2021, and he could be a valuable piece of Chicago's bullpen if he returns to form following April 2022 Tommy John surgery.
Nov 17 2022Crochet (elbow) isn't expected to serve as a starting pitcher in 2023, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pitching coach Ethan Katz said Thursday that he hopes Crochet will be able to serve as a long reliever at some point in 2023, but the southpaw still needs additional time to recover after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April. Crochet has been throwing from 120 feet recently, but it's not yet clear how much work he'll be able to take on once spring training begins.
May 17 2022Crochet (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet remains out for the entirety of the 2022 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but the move to the 60-day IL allows the White Sox to open a spot on their 40-man roster. In a corresponding move, the team selected the contract of pitcher Davis Martin from Triple-A Charlotte. Martin will make his major-league debut as the starter for Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader versus the Royals.
Apr 7 2022Crochet (elbow) landed on the 10-day injured list Thursday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet won't pitch again until sometime in 2023, as he underwent Tommy John surgery Tuesday. While he's merely on the 10-day injured list for now, he'll presumably shift to the 60-day whenever the White Sox need another spot on the 40-man roster.
Apr 2 2022Crochet (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery Tuesday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet sustained an injury in Thursday's Cactus League matchup against Cincinnati, and he'll be forced to miss the 2022 campaign and a sizable portion of next season following his procedure. The White Sox had hoped that the southpaw would be able to transition to a starting role by 2023, but his lengthy layoff could affect that plan.
Mar 31 2022Crochet exited his appearance in Thursday's Cactus League contest against the Reds with a trainer, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet faced only two batters before suffering the apparent injury. The exact nature of the issue is currently unknown, though he reportedly showed some discomfort in his arm prior to exiting. Crochet was expected to serve as a key part of the team's bullpen in 2022, but his start to the campaign may now be delayed.
Mar 21 2022Crochet is following last year's Michael Kopech plan and is hopeful he will move into the rotation in 2023, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kopech threw 72.1 innings last season (including the playoffs) and made four starts and is now competing for a rotation spot. Crochet, who is three years younger than Kopech, logged 56.2 innings (including the playoffs), and he only logged two or more innings on six occasions, never surpassing three frames in an outing. He was able to have a normal offseason, which was not the case heading into last year, as he spent last winter rehabilitating from a flexor strain. Crochet's fastball and slider will always be his top two offerings, but if his changeup improves and he stays healthy, he should be given the chance to follow in Kopech's footsteps.
Jun 23 2021Crochet (2-4) did not retire a batter and allowed four runs on four hits to pick up the loss Tuesday against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet, who has been very good out of the bullpen, was entrusted to pitch the seventh after the White Sox took a 3-2 lead in the top half of the inning. But the left-hander permitted four consecutive singles and was replaced by Aaron Bummer, who gave up a hit that produced the fourth run charged to Crochet. It was the third straight outing in which Crochet allowed at least one run, and it raised his season ERA from 1.19 to 2.78.
Jun 9 2021Crochet (2-2) picked up the win over the Blue Jays on Tuesday, throwing a perfect eighth inning and striking out two in a 6-1 victory. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet was the pitcher of record when the White Sox plated five in the bottom of the eighth to earn the rookie's second win of the season. He hasn't allowed a run in his last 13 innings (12 appearances), striking out 16 but walking nine during that run.
Jun 2 2021Crochet struck out two over two scoreless innings in Tuesday's 6-5 loss to Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: On the day it was announced that Crochet would make only single-inning appearances, the left-hander shut down Cleveland over two perfect innings. His usage may be more about pitch count than innings. He needed just seven pitches to dispatch Cleveland batters in the seventh inning, then came out for a second inning.
Jun 1 2021Crochet will be limited to single-inning outings going forward and will not pitch back-to-back days, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The flame-throwing lefty has only made two appearances of more than an inning this season, and has yet to pitch on consecutive days. Crochet clearly has the arm talent to be an oft-utilized, high-leverage reliever, but the White Sox appear to be preserving him for the time being.
May 31 2021Crochet pitched a perfect eighth inning to pick up the hold in Sunday's 3-1 win over Baltimore. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet shut down the Orioles after the White Sox took the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. It was his ninth consecutive appearance (8.1 innings) without allowing a run, although he's walked seven during that stretch. The left-hander's walked nine over 13.2 innings this season, which is alarming, but Crochet has made good situational pitches to avoid damage.
May 12 2021Crochet (1-2) earned his first win Tuesday, striking out one over two-thirds of an inning in a 9-3 win over the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet entered a tied game with one out and men at the corners in the top of the sixth inning. The left-hander induced a shallow fly to right field then a strikeout, keeping the game tied and setting the stage for the White Sox to take the lead in the bottom half of the inning. This was Crochet's first outing since being activated off the injured list.
May 7 2021Crochet (back) was activated from the 10-day injured list Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet wound up with a minimum-length stay on the injured list due to an upper-back strain. He'd given up just one earned run in nine innings prior to suffering the injury, though his 8:5 K:BB is less than convincing. Alex McRae was optioned in a corresponding move.
Apr 29 2021Crochet was placed on the 10-day injured list with an upper-back strain Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet dealt with a blister during his most recent outing Sunday, but it's an entirely separate issue that will send him to the injured list. The move can be backdated by three days, leaving Crochet eligible to return next Thursday, though it's not yet clear whether he's expected to do so. Luis Robert (illness) was activated from the injured list in a corresponding move.
Apr 26 2021Crochet developed a blister on his hand while throwing three scoreless innings in Sunday's 8-4 win over the Rangers, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. He allowed three hits and walk while striking out one to earn his third hold. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet was seen bleeding from his thumb during the eighth inning when got out of a jam with a double-play lineout. It's unclear how the blister will impact him going forward, but after throwing 46 pitches Sunday, Crochet will not be available for the next few days.
Apr 11 2021Crochet (0-1) allowed an unearned run and a walk with one strikeout in one inning, taking the loss in Sunday's extra-inning defeat against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet will take the blame for the loss, as his throwing error allowed Michael Taylor to score the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning. The 21-year-old Crochet has yet to allow an earned run in 4.1 innings this season. He's posted a 0.69 WHIP, six strikeouts and a hold in three outings. The southpaw can be expected to feature in high-leverage roles as one of the setup relievers to closer Liam Hendriks.
Apr 4 2021Crochet struck out three over 2.1 perfect innings in Saturday's 5-3 loss to the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet entered with two outs and two on in the bottom of the fifth and got the final out, then retired the next six batters in order. He pitched exclusively as a one-inning reliever during spring training, but as a collegiate starter, Crochet has the variety of pitches necessary to navigate multiple innings and needed just 26 of them to shut down the Angels. It was the young prospect's first appearance in 2021 after a successful introduction to MLB last year. He has yet to allow a run or walk in 8.1 innings in the majors.
Mar 22 2021Crochet allowed one hit and struck out two over a scoreless eighth inning in Sunday's spring game against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet is locking in a spot in the White Sox's bullpen with a strong spring. The 21-year-old left-hander has allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out six over six Cactus League innings. At this point, he's expected to be used in the last third of games, leading up to closer Liam Hendriks.
Mar 7 2021Crochet allowed one hit over a scoreless inning in Saturday's Cactus League game against the Indians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet followed starter Reynaldo Lopez in the third inning so that he could face the best of Cleveland's lineup in preparation for what will be an important bullpen role in the final third of games. The young left-hander with a reputation for high velocity did not reach 100 MPH but did touch 99 on the gun, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ''The arm feels good, so that's the main takeaway. I felt really good with my off-speed [pitches]. My fastball command wavered a little bit, but for the most part I felt very confident with it," said Crochet.
Mar 6 2021Crochet is viewed by manager Tony La Russa as "a valuable part of the final third of the game," James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet was viewed as a starter by the White Sox when they selected him 11th in last year's draft, but he shot straight to the majors in September without any previous professional experience and impressed, making five scoreless appearances in the regular season and one more in the playoffs. The White Sox are now faced with the choice of keeping him in that relief role as a big-leaguer or sending him down to the minors to stretch out, and appears as though they're choosing the former. He's seemingly thought to be ready for high-leverage work, though he won't provide a ton of fantasy value in standard setups as a single-inning reliever unless he's getting saves, which won't be happening as long as Liam Hendriks is healthy.
Feb 21 2021Crochet added 15 pounds of muscle during the offseason, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 21-year-old Crochet worked on his body during the offseason in preparation for what should be a full-time role in the White Sox's bullpen. The organization still feels he's a starter long-term, but his successful MLB debut as a reliever in 2020 has the decision-makers thinking he can be a useful bullpen piece for a team with World Series aspirations in 2021.
Feb 17 2021General manager Rick Hahn said Wednesday that Crochet (forearm) is expected to open the upcoming season in the White Sox's bullpen rather than the rotation, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The White Sox don't seem to be writing off the flame-throwing lefty becoming a starter in the long run, but working out of the bullpen will allow Crochet to make a more immediate impact for a team that has legitimate World Series aspirations in 2021. Upon being promoted to the big leagues last September, Crochet was dominant in a small sample of five relief appearances, tossing six scoreless frames and striking out eight. He suffered a strained left flexor tendon in the playoffs, but after being cleared to resume a throwing program earlier in the offseason, Crochet isn't expect to face any restrictions this spring.
Feb 13 2021Crochet (forearm) has been throwing in Arizona and looks good, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While it's not the most detailed report, it's still certainly good to hear that Crochet seems fine after suffering a flexor strain in the playoffs last season. He's also reportedly added muscle over the offseason. The young lefty has yet to pitch in the minors after being selected 11th-overall in last year's draft but has already made six major-league relief appearances. If he looks healthy and effective this spring, it's entirely possible he heads straight to the big-league bullpen again, as assistant general manager Chris Getz suggested in early February, though he could also head to the minors to build up as a starter, the role he's eventually expected to fill in Chicago.
Feb 8 2021White Sox assistant general manager Chris Getz said Crochet (forearm) is being considered for a bullpen role with the major-league team, Scott Merkin of the White Sox's official site reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The organization's long-term plans are to use him as a starter, but Getz feels Crochet could be a fit in a multi-inning role on the White Sox in 2021. The left-hander was effective in limited exposure to MLB last season when he fanned eight, walked none and allowed three hits over six scoreless innings. He also appeared in the postseason. While Getz did not bring up Crochet's forearm strain, that he's being considered for the bullpen suggests he'll start training camp on time.
Oct 12 2020Crochet was diagnosed with a flexor strain in his left forearm but does not have any damage to his UCL, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet's appearance in Game 3 of the Wild Card Series against the Athletics was cut short due to the injury, but he's evidently avoided the worst-case outcome. No damage to the UCL means no Tommy John surgery will be needed, so the young lefty is expected to be ready to pitch without restrictions during spring training. Even though he made his MLB debut as a reliever in 2020, the White Sox still view Crochet as a candidate for the rotation in the long run. As such, Crochet could be given the opportunity to compete for a starting role with the big club this spring, but a more realistic outcome is that he begins the 2021 campaign at Triple-A Charlotte if the White Sox remain serious about developing him as a rotation option.
Oct 1 2020Crochet was removed from Thursday's game against the Athletics with left forearm tightness. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet is still being evaluated to determine the severity of the injury, but his status for the remainder of the postseason could certainly be in question if the White Sox advance. The 21-year-old was dominant during his first action on the professional level in the regular season as he tossed six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and no walks while striking out eight. His average fastball velocity was 100.2 mph during the season, but his speed was down during his appearance in Game 3 of the AL Wild Card Series prior to his removal.
Sep 23 2020Crochet struck out one over a scoreless eighth inning in Tuesday's 5-3 extra-inning loss to Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The White Sox pre-planned Crochet's appearance in the eighth inning, suggesting the rookie will be part of the postseason roster. Facing the top of Cleveland's order, the left-hander threw 18 four-seam fastballs among his 19 pitches, 11 of which topped 100 mph. He's yet to allow a run or a walk in three innings.
Sep 19 2020Crochet struck out two over a scoreless inning in Friday's 7-1 loss to the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Crochet, the White Sox's first-round pick (11th overall) in the 2020 draft, made his major-league debut in the sixth inning with Chicago down by six runs. The 21-year-old threw six of 13 pitches at 100 MPH or harder, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. Chicago general manager Rick Hahn said that Crochet will pitch out of the bullpen over the final 10 games to see if the left-hander can help the club during the postseason. Crochet is still viewed long term as a starter.
Sep 18 2020Crochet had his contract selected by the White Sox and was added to the active roster Friday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 21-year-old will join the big-league roster three months after being selected 11th overall during the June draft. Crochet is unlikely to fill a significant role with Chicago headed to the playoffs, but he may be able to make his professional.
Jun 10 2020The White Sox have selected Crochet with the 11th overall pick in the 2020 first-year player draft. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The obvious high-end comp for Crochet is Chris Sale. He is a 6-foot-6, 218-pound southpaw who throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a big fastball, a big slider and a lot of relief risk. Remember, a lot of people didn't think Sale would make it as a starter, even after he reached the majors. Of course, just because he resembled Sale (visually more than statistically) while pitching for Tennessee doesn't mean that's a likely outcome. He gets great extension on his fastball, which has touched triple digits and could be the best fastball in the entire draft. His sweeping slider gives him a second plus pitch, while his changeup can look promising at times but lacks consistency. Crochet made just 13 starts in college, working primarily as a reliever during his first two seasons. His junior season was delayed due to shoulder soreness, but he struck out six while giving up two hits and zero walks in 3.1 innings in his lone 2020 outing, showing evaluators that he was healthy and his stuff was intact. His size, delivery and lack of track record point more toward the bullpen than the rotation, but his 8.3 percent walk rate in college wasn't terrible for a 6-foot-6 pitcher. A common refrain is that he could be a ninth-inning arm if he has to move to the bullpen, but obviously any amateur pitcher's floor is quite a bit lower than big-league closer.
