Jun 17 2024The Angels designated Suarez for assignment Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez looked like he was going to be a solid mid-rotation starter for the Angels when he posted a 3.86 ERA and 188:69 K:BB over 207.1 innings from 2021-22. It's been tough sledding since then, though, with an 8.22 ERA over 29 appearances (eight starts). He also missed a large chunk of 2023 with shoulder problems. Still, as a 26-year-old that's shown promise in the past, there might be interest in Suarez via trade or waivers.
Jun 12 2024Suarez dropped to 1-1 on the season in Tuesday's 9-4 loss to the Diamondbacks, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk while striking out three over 2.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez made his first start of the season Tuesday and didn't make a particularly compelling case to earn additional turns through the rotation. He allowed a pair of runs in the second after giving up two triples and a single, and Randal Grichuk would tack on a two-run blast in the third to spell an early end to Suarez's night. The 26-year-old's 7.08 ERA on the season is the second-highest in all of baseball among pitchers who have pitched at least 30 innings, trailing only Kyle Hendricks (9.07). If Chase Silseth (elbow) is ready to return from the 60-day injured list the next time Suarez's turn comes up Sunday in San Francisco, the latter will presumably head back to the bullpen.
Jun 10 2024Suarez is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks at Chase Field. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez made 58 starts for the Angels over the past five seasons, but after losing out in a battle for a rotation spot in spring training, he's been working exclusively as a reliever in 2024 and has posted a 6.54 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 34:20 K:BB in 31.2 innings. He won't be moving into the rotation on merit, but he'll nonetheless slot into the starting spot that had been previously occupied by the struggling Reid Detmers, who was recently demoted to Triple-A Salt Lake. Even if Suarez acquits himself well in a starting role Tuesday, he could be headed back to the bullpen immediately thereafter with Chase Silseth (elbow) nearing a return from the 60-day injured list.
Mar 4 2024Suarez tossed two scoreless frames Monday versus the Rangers in his Cactus League debut after overcoming a dead arm phase, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez has been behind other starters in Angels' camp while battling through dead arm issues, but it looks like he's over the hump. The left-hander currently appears on the outside looking in for a spot in the Halos' rotation, but he's out of options, so he could settle into a long relief role initially.
Feb 2 2024Suarez will make $925,000 in 2024 after losing his arbitration case to the Angels on Friday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez had an 8.29 ERA across 33.2 innings last season and was in his first year of arbitration eligibility. The 26-year-old lefty posted a 3.86 ERA in 45 appearances (34 starts) during the 2021-22 campaigns, and he'll likely need to get back to that form to have a chance of working out of the rotation regularly in 2024.
Sep 22 2023Suarez will open Friday's game against the Twins, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez has given up two runs over 2.2 innings since returning from the injured list Sept. 11. He'll likely remain in the game for an inning or two before turning things over to Davis Daniel, who's slated for bulk innings Friday.
Sep 11 2023Suarez (shoulder) was activated from the injured list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There had not been an update on Suarez's status since he was shut down in early August, but he apparently made significant progress in recent weeks and is ready to resuming pitching for the big club. The Angels have not announced any starting pitchers beyond Tuesday, so it's possible Suarez could jump right back into the rotation.
Aug 2 2023Suarez's minor-league rehab assignment has been shut down due to left shoulder soreness, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez recently kicked off the rehab stint and made two appearances for the Angels' ACL club, allowing one run on five hits and two walks while striking out four batters over a combined 3.1 innings. However, he'll now take a step back due to the setback with his shoulder. Angels manager Phil Nevin indicated that the organization isn't concerned that Suarez will need to be held out for a long period, though it's not yet clear when the southpaw will begin throwing again.
Jul 20 2023Suarez (shoulder) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings for the Angels' Arizona Complex League team Tuesday, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out two batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez last pitched for the Angels on May 7, when he departed his start against Texas after 2.2 frames with left shoulder discomfort. He was moved to the 60-day IL on June 20 but recently began throwing to hitters before taking part in the ACL game Tuesday. Per MLB.com, Suarez will make another rehab start Sunday, this time with a full-season affiliate. It hasn't yet been decided whether the left-hander will work as a starter or a reliever upon his eventual return to the big club.
Jun 20 2023The Angels transferred Suarez (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez has been on the injured list since May 8 with a left shoulder strain, and his recent transfer to the 60-day IL will keep him out for at least the first week of July. The move opens up a spot for Kevin Padlo to be selected from Triple-A Salt Late and join the Angels' infield.
May 9 2023Suarez will be shut down for about a month with left shoulder inflammation, but his MRI revealed no structural damage, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez left Sunday's start in the second inning after feeling soreness in his left shoulder, and the MRI revealed the inflammation after he was placed on the injured list Monday. The shutdown will cause him to miss the rest of May and the start of June, but the positive news is that it doesn't appear he'll need surgery and he should be an option for the Angels for the second half of the 2023 campaign at the very least.
May 8 2023Suarez was placed on the 15-day injured list by the Angels on Monday with a left shoulder injury, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez felt soreness in his left shoulder during the second inning of Sunday's start against the Rangers, and the results of an MRI were concerning enough for the left-hander to be placed on the injured list. He'll miss at least two weeks of action, and Cesar Valdez has been recalled to take Suarez's place on the roster. There's a good chance Chase Silseth will now be moved into the rotation after he threw 3.1 innings of relief after Suarez left.
May 7 2023Suarez will undergo an MRI on Monday after exiting Sunday's start against the Rangers with left shoulder discomfort, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez first felt soreness in the second inning before finally being removed in the third when it didn't dissipate. A stint on the injured list for Suarez seems likely even if he gets favorable news from the MRI, especially since his spot in the Angels' rotation was already on thin ice. Chase Silseth went 3.1 innings in relief of Suarez on Sunday and would be an obvious candidate to replace him in the rotation.
Apr 30 2023Suarez (1-1) earned the win during Sunday's 3-0 victory over Milwaukee, tossing five scoreless innings in which he allowed two hits and three walks. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez allowed seven runs, including five homers, his last time out, but he was given another shot in the rotation and came through with his best outing of the campaign. The left-hander's ERA dropped from 10.26 to 7.89, and his six strikeouts were a season high. Despite the solid bounce back, the 25-year-old is likely still on the hot seat and could be in danger of being demoted to the bullpen or Triple-A if he struggles in his next start.
Apr 5 2023Suarez (0-1) was handed the loss after giving up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and two walks as the Angels fell to the Mariners, 11-2, on Tuesday. He struck out four over the 77-pitch outing. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old lefty was able to break camp as the Halos' No. 5 starter, but after a strong close to the 2022 campaign, he wasn't able to get off on the right foot in his 2023 season debut. He faced five batters and needed 31 pitches to record three outs in the opening frame, though he limited the damage to just one run, which came on a wild pitch. Suarez appeared to right the ship with a pair of 1-2-3 innings, but he unraveled in the fourth, surrendering three straight hits, including a Teoscar Hernandez home run. He served up another home run to Hernandez the following inning before being pulled from the contest a batter later.
Oct 1 2022Suarez (8-8) earned the win Saturday over the Rangers, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out six over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez flirted with perfection in this one, throwing six clean innings before he was tagged for a two-run home run by Nathaniel Lowe in the seventh. That blast briefly put the Rangers ahead, but the Angels regained the lead to allow Suarez to be rewarded with the win, leveling his record in his last start of the year. The southpaw has had some solid moments over the second half of the campaign, giving up more than three runs just once in his last 11 outings. He'll finish the season with a 3.96 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 103:33 K:BB across 109 innings over 22 appearances (20 starts). The strong second-half performance should give Suarez an inside track to a rotation spot to begin 2023.
Sep 25 2022Suarez (7-8) allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out six in 5.2 innings to earn the win over the Twins on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Although Suarez fell one out shy of picking up a quality start Sunday, he was rewarded with his seventh win of the year after settling for losses in his last two outings. The southpaw has lasted at least five innings in all 10 of his starts following the All-Star break, and he's posted a 2.84 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 57 innings during that time. He tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Rangers on Sunday.
Sep 19 2022Suarez (6-8) allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings Monday, striking out four and taking a loss against Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After giving up an RBI double to Ty France in the first inning, Suarez kept thing under control until Carlos Santana smoked a grand slam in the fifth. The 24-year-old southpaw had allowed three or fewer runs in eight straight outings prior to Monday's hiccup. His season ERA jumped to 4.11 alongside a 91:32 K:BB through 20 appearances. Suarez is expected to start in Minnesota this weekend.
Sep 13 2022Suarez (6-7) took the loss Tuesday in Cleveland, allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out three in 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez scattered three singles over the first four innings while holding the Guardians scoreless. Cleveland got on the board in the fifth with a sacrifice fly and Oscar Gonzalez launched a two-run homer in the sixth. Suarez faded towards the end of the outing and allowed six of the last 10 batters he faced to record a hit. Tuesday's outing was fairly representative of the 24-year-old's season as he's compiled a 3.20 ERA in the first four innings of outings and a 6.00 ERA in the fifth inning or later. His next start will likely be early next week in Texas.
Sep 5 2022Suarez (6-6) allowed three hits and a walk while striking out seven over seven shutout innings to earn the win Monday over the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez turned in his second straight quality start and was fairly dominant, throwing 67 of 92 pitches for strikes. He left the game with a big lead that was never in danger. The southpaw has completed at least five frames without allowing more than three runs in any of his seven outings since the All-Star break. He's at a 3.77 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 84:31 K:BB through 86 innings across 18 appearances (16 starts) this year. Suarez is projected for a road start in Cleveland next week.
Aug 30 2022Suarez (5-6) earned the win over the Yankees on Monday, pitching six innings and allowing two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out six batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez gave up only three hits in the outing, though two of them -- including an Anthony Rizzo solo home run -- went for extra-bases. The left-handed hurler demonstrated good control with 56 of his 87 pitching going for strikes, and of his three walks, two were intentional passes to Aaron Judge. Suarez turned in his third quality start of the campaign and ended a two-game losing streak to bring his record to 5-6. He had a strong month of August, posting a 2.51 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 29:7 K:BB over 28.2 innings across five starts.
Aug 23 2022Suarez (4-6) was charged with a loss after he pitched 5.1 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits while striking out five versus the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez surrendered two runs in bottom of the third frame before being chased from the game with one out in the sixth inning after he gave up a solo homer to Isaac Paredes and a single to Taylor Walls. The left-hander has now allowed six runs on 12 hits over 10.2 innings in his last two starts after he had produced three consecutive scoreless outings prior. Since July 26, Suarez has compiled a 1.93 ERA over five starts, lowering his season-long ERA to 4.19 over 73 innings in 16 outings.
Aug 16 2022Suarez (4-5) took the loss during Tuesday's 8-2 defeat at the hands of the Mariners, allowing three runs on four hits with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez retired the first 16 batters he faced before surrendering four straight singles -- three of which came around to score -- before being removed. Including Tuesday's start, Suarez had gone 22 innings without permitting an earned run while he walked none as a starter for the first time this year Suarez possesses a 4.12 ERA and 1.33 WHIP with 66 strikeouts in 67.2 and is scheduled to take the mound again next week in Tampa Bay.
Aug 8 2022Suarez (4-4) allowed two hits and two walks over seven shutout innings Monday, striking out eight and earning a win over the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez was dominant Monday, firing 67 of 97 pitches for strikes, including 14 whiffs. He didn't allow an extra-base hit and Oakland never put together any momentum against him. The 24-year-old southpaw lowered his ERA to 4.04 with a 61:27 K:BB through 62.1 frames. Since he was tagged with six runs against the Dodgers on July 16, Suarez has fired 17.1 consecutive scoreless innings. He'll look for a fourth straight win next week at home against the Mariners.
Aug 2 2022Suarez (3-4) earned the win during Tuesday's 3-1 victory over Oakland, allowing one unearned run on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts in five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez was moved up to start Tuesday's game with the departure of Noah Syndergaard and filled in seamlessly, only letting one run in during his final frame as a result of a passed ball despite failing to record a 1-2-3 inning. The 24-year-old hasn't permitted an earned run over his last two sparts, spanning 10.1 innings, though both have come against inferior competition in Oakland and Kansas City. With a decent 4.55 ERA and 1.48 WHIP with 53 strikeouts across 55.1 innings, Suarez has a shot to remain in Los Angeles' rotation.
Jul 26 2022Suarez (2-4) earned the win Tuesday over the Royals. He allowed three hits, a walk and hit a batter while striking out three over 5.1 scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez had allowed 12 runs over 12 innings in his first three starts in July, though he faced the Astros, Orioles and Dodgers in that stretch. A favorable start against the Royals allowed the southpaw to get back on track. He threw 53 of 78 pitches for strikes in arguably his sharpest outing of the year. For the season, Suarez owns a 5.01 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 48:23 K:BB in 50.1 innings across 12 appearances (10 starts). He's projected for a home start versus the Athletics next week.
Jul 16 2022Suarez (1-4) allowed six runs on five hits and three walks with six strikeouts in 3.2 innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez hasn't completed five innings in any of his three July starts. He's allowed 12 runs in 12 innings this month. Saturday's outing was marred by the long ball, as Trea Turner took him deep twice and Max Muncy added a three-run blast. Suarez had a 4.36 ERA at the end of June, but it's now at 5.60 with a 1.58 WHIP and 45:22 K:BB across 45 innings in 11 appearances (nine starts) this year. The Angels are expected to resume a six-man rotation after the All-Star break, so he's not yet at immediate risk of losing his starting role despite the recent struggles.
Jul 10 2022Suarez (1-2) allowed four runs on three hits and two walks while striking out one in 3.2 innings to take the loss during Sunday's game against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez hadn't allowed more than three earned runs in any of his last five outings and held Baltimore scoreless over three innings Sunday, but he struggled against the surging Orioles in the bottom of the fourth inning and took his first loss since April 30. Over his last five appearances, the southpaw has posted a 3.80 ERA in 23.2 innings. He tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Dodgers on Saturday.
Jul 3 2022Suarez didn't factor into the decision during Sunday's 4-2 loss to Houston, allowing two runs on four hits and four strikeouts in 4.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez began Sunday's start with three perfect innings before allowing one run on three hits in the fourth and another two-out hit in the fifth that prompted his removal. The performance was a minor step back from his two prior excellent appearances, though he's still kept opposing offenses to no more than three runs in each of his four games since being recalled from the minors June 7. He's currently scheduled to pitch again next weekend against Baltimore.
Jun 30 2022Suarez is scheduled to make his next start Sunday in Houston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He will unsurprisingly received another turn through the rotation after he impressed while working as a bulk reliever behind Andrew Wantz in last Sunday's win over the Mariners. Suarez notched his first win of the season in the six-inning outing, striking out eight while yielding one run on five hits and no walks. The left-hander is expected to be deployed as a traditional starter this time out, and he could have some staying power in the Angels' six-man rotation if he submits another solid performance.
Jun 26 2022Suarez (1-2) picked up the win Sunday versus the Mariners. He allowed a run on five hits and struck out eight over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez pitched behind opener Andrew Wantz, who was ejected after he hit Jesse Winker with a pitch, which ignited a brawl between the teams. The lone run on Suarez's line was from an Abraham Toro solo home run in the sixth inning, but the Angels were able to pull ahead in the seventh while the southpaw was still in the game. Suarez had not completed more than five innings in a start at the major-league level prior to Sunday. He owns a 4.36 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 34:17 K:BB across 33 innings overall. The Angels' pitching plans are still in flux heading into next week, but Suarez's next start is expected to be a road date in Houston next weekend.
Jun 19 2022The Angels returned Suarez to Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez's latest stint with the big club lasted just one day, as the Angels designated him as the 27th man for Saturday's doubleheader with the Mariners. He started the second game of the twin bill and fared well in the Angels' 3-0 win, shutting out the Mariners over 4.1 innings while striking out seven and scattering four hits and three walks. Kenny Rosenberg was called up from Triple-A to make a start in Sunday's series finale in Seattle, and how he performs may dictate whether he or Suarez gets the nod the next time the Halos require a sixth starter in next weekend's home series with the Mariners.
Jun 18 2022Suarez didn't factor into the decision during Saturday's 3-0 shutout of Seattle in Game 2 of a doubleheader, allowing four hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in 4.1 scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez was called up to start the second game of Saturday's doubleheader and stranded the bases loaded in the first inning but progressed well until the fifth when he was pulled with one out and two on. The seven whiffs mark a season-high for the 24-year-old and he lowered his ERA to an even 5.00 with the successful outing, though it's unclear if he'll stick with the team.
Jun 8 2022Suarez was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander was called up to start Tuesday and took a no-decision after giving up three runs over five innings, and he'll quickly head back to the minors. Suarez should rejoin the starting rotation for Salt Lake, though he could be in the mix to rejoin the Angels for a doubleheader June 18.
Jun 7 2022Suarez allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three in five innings in a no-decision versus the Red Sox on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez held his own pretty well in the spot start, with all three runs on his line coming in the second inning. He's logged a 5.96 ERA, 1.85 WHIP and 19:14 K:BB through 22.2 innings in six outings (five starts) this season. Suarez is not guaranteed to keep his place in the Angels' six-man rotation -- if he does, he lines up for a difficult road start versus the Dodgers next week.
May 23 2022Suarez was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez was called up by the Angels last week, and he tossed two-thirds of a scoreless inning against the Rangers on Wednesday. After making just one relief appearance during his stint in the majors, the southpaw will head back to Salt Lake to make room for Archie Bradley, who was reinstated from the injured list Monday.
May 18 2022Suarez was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez was sent down by the Angels on May 1, and he posted a 5.40 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 10 innings over two starts in the minors. The Angels currently have six starters on their major-league roster, so Suarez will likely be available out of the bullpen for now after Cesar Valdez was designated for assignment.
May 1 2022The Angels optioned Suarez to Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez was demoted after he surrendered all four of the White Sox's runs while giving up eight hits and two walks over four innings in Saturday's 4-0 loss. The southpaw went 0-2 across his first four starts, submitting a 6.35 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 15:11 K:BB across 17 frames. Assuming the Angels elect to keep their six-man rotation intact, long reliever Jaime Barria could be the top candidate to pick up a start when Suarez's turn comes up again Friday versus the Nationals.
Apr 30 2022Suarez gave up four earned runs over 4.0 innings and took the loss Saturday as the Angels fell to the White Sox. He allowed eight hits, struck out four batters and walked two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Five of the hits Suarez allowed went for extra bases, and he wound up on the wrong side of the decision for the second time in four starts. He has not been eating up many innings for the Angels, as he has not made it out of the fifth inning all season.
Apr 24 2022Suarez allowed three runs on four hits and two walks in 4.1 innings while striking out six in a 7-6 win Sunday over Baltimore. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez was the beneficiary of a six-run first inning by the Angels' offense but was unable to get through the fifth to put himself in line for the victory. All of the damage against him came on a three-run homer by Trey Mancini in the third inning. The lefty has pitched 4.1 innings in all three of his starts, allowing two or three runs in each appearance. After allowing a career-low 3.3 BB/9 in 2021, the 24-year-old has walked nine in 13 innings this season. His next start will likely come next weekend against the White Sox.
Apr 18 2022Suarez didn't factor into the decision Sunday against the Rangers after allowing three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three across 4.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez wasn't involved in the decision but took a step back compared to his season debut, as he gave up more runs and more hits than in that outing while failing to complete five innings for the second straight outing. As if that wasn't enough, Suarez has also struggled with his command and owns a 5:7 K:BB across 8.2 innings in 2022. He's tabbed to make his next start Sunday at home against Baltimore.
Apr 10 2022Suarez (0-1) was handed the loss during Sunday's 4-1 defeat by Houston, allowing two runs on two hits and four walks with two strikeouts in 4.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez was able to escape a bases-loaded one-out jam in the third but didn't have as much luck in the fifth inning, when reliever Austin Warren allowed both inherited runners to score and put Suarez in line for the loss. Manager Joe Maddon is reluctant to let Suarez through opponents' orders a third time as he's reached six innings in only one of 15 starts over the past two seasons, which severely limits his upside. The 24-year-old lefty is slated to take the hill next Sunday in Texas.
Apr 6 2022Suarez is projected to be one of the Angels' six starters this season, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez notched a 4.44 ERA across 14 starts for the Angels last season, and that was enough for the team to give him the chance to retain his role in the rotation to begin 2022 despite the fact that his numbers (including a 1.98 ERA) were better out of the bullpen. The southpaw fared well enough in Cactus League play, posting a 4.50 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 10:3 K:BB across 10 innings. He likely won't have a long leash if he struggles out of the gate during the regular season, however.
Oct 2 2021Suarez (8-8) earned the win Friday over Seattle after allowing one run on three hits and two walks across five innings, striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez had given up three-plus runs in back-to-back appearances, but he closed out the season with a strong performance en route to his eighth win of the campaign. The 23-year-old southpaw finishes the year with a career-high 23 appearances (14 starts) while logging a 3.75 ERA and 1.23 WHIP through 98.1 innings, all of them being career-best marks.
Sep 25 2021Suarez allowed four earned runs on five hits and one walk while striking out one across five innings in the loss to the Mariners on Friday. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez surrendered a solo home run to Ty France in the first inning. In addition, he allowed three doubles that contributed to three more runs crossing the plate. He hasn't allowed more than four runs in any start this season, and he has a 3.41 ERA over his last five starts. On the season, the 23-year-old has a 3.86 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with 80 punchouts in 93.1 innings.
Sep 19 2021Suarez (7-8) took the loss in Saturday's 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Athletics, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez settled down after surrendering three runs in the first inning on three hits and a walk, but Los Angeles was never able to recover from the early hole. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the 23-year-old, who has gone at least 5.2 innings in each of his last three starts. Suarez is set to take the hill against the Astros on Thursday.
Sep 11 2021Suarez (7-7) picked up the victory Saturday against Houston, allowing one run on three hits and three walks over 5.2 innings. He also had seven strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: That's back-to-back stellar outings for the 23-year-old, who limited the high-powered Astros to a Yuli Gurriel RBI groundout in the fourth inning. Suarez boasts a 3.59 ERA in his 20 appearances (11 starts) this season, logging a 76:31 K:BB in 82.2 innings. He's tentatively scheduled to face Oakland at home in his next start.
Sep 4 2021Suarez (6-7) got the win in Saturday's 4-1 victory over the Rangers, allowing one run on five hits with eight strikeouts in a complete game. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez showed the promise Los Angeles desperately needed on Saturday, retiring the first nine Rangers he faced and never facing any real threats. He took a shutout into the ninth but permitted Texas' lone run with one out and was still able to slam the door on the resounding victory. The outing was only Suarez second without surrendering any free passes and the eight strikeouts are his most in any start. He currently lines up to face Houston next weekend.
Aug 29 2021Suarez started Saturday's 10-2 victory over San Diego, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts in 3.2 innings. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez didn't pitch well -- throwing 73 pitches in less than four innings -- but Los Angeles jumped out to an early lead that it was able to extend handily. The lefty has now gone less than five innings in each of his last two starts and lines up to face Texas next weekend.
Aug 22 2021Suarez (5-7) took the loss in Sunday's 3-0 shutout against Cleveland, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez didn't have his best stuff Sunday as he permitted a season-high nine baserunners and had traffic on the bases during all four innings. Given his age (23) and Los Angeles' struggling rotation paired with waning playoff hopes, Suarez should have a spot in the rotation for the rest of the season barring injury.
Aug 16 2021Suarez (5-6) allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out six in five innings to take the loss against the Yankees on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez hadn't allowed fewer than three earned runs in any of his first four starts after the All-Star break, but he fared slightly better in Monday's outing. However, the southpaw was tagged with his sixth loss of the season in the low-scoring contest. Across his last five starts, Suarez has recorded a 6.12 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in 25 innings. He tentatively lines up to make his next start on the road against Cleveland on Sunday.
Aug 11 2021Suarez (5-5) was tagged with the loss in Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Blue Jays after allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk across 5.1 innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez got off to a rough start and gave up two runs in the first inning, and while he settled down afterwards, he lacked the run support to instigate a potential turnaround. The left-hander departed the game in the top of the sixth after allowing back-to-back singles to Bo Bichette and Teoscar Hernandez, and both would later score on a two-run single by Lourdes Gurriel. The 23-year-old southpaw has given up at least three runs in each of his last four appearances and owns a 5.79 ERA across 28 innings since the beginning of July (six starts).
Aug 3 2021Suarez (5-4) allowed three earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out six across 5.2 innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez was given significant run support by the Angel offense, which allowed him to cruise to his fifth win of the season. Though he wasn't dominant, the majority of the damage against him came on a two-run home run by Andy Ibanez in Suarez's final inning of work. Entering the game, Suarez had issued nine walks while striking out 15 across his last 17 frames -- a span of four starts -- so his 6:1 K:BB in this outing is noteworthy. For the season, Suarez has maintained a 3.60 ERA across 50 innings.
Jul 27 2021Suarez (4-4) took the loss against Colorado on Tuesday, pitching 3.1 innings and allowing eight runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander's outing got off a to a poor start when a pair of Angels errors in the first inning led to two Rockies runs. He gave up a solo homer in the third frame before another error catalyzed two more Colorado scores. Suarez couldn't blame his defense in the fourth inning, when he allowed three of the four batters he faced to reach base, and all three came around to score. Suarez has now surrendered four earned runs in consecutive contests, somewhat souring a three-game stretch from June 28 to July 11 during which he yielded four total runs over 13.1 innings. He's tentatively lined up to start next Monday's game at Texas.
Jul 20 2021Suarez (4-3) was charged with the loss against the A's on Tuesday after allowing four runs on three hits and a walk while striking out four across 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez held the A's to a single run across the first five frames via a solo homer by Matt Olson. The southpaw eventually unraveled in the sixth, allowing three more runs including a two-run double to Ramon Laureano. The 23-year-old didn't quite stretch out as far as his season-high 88 pitches last time out, tossing 73 this time around, including 49 for strikes. Suarez will take a 2.85 ERA and 1.12 WHIP into his next projected start Monday against Colorado.
Jul 12 2021Suarez (4-2) allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings as he picked up a win over the Mariners on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The only run Suarez allowed came on a sacrifice fly from Ty France after the left-hander allowed back-to-back singles to open up the bottom half of the first. He settled in nicely afterward, not allowing another baserunner to reach second over the next four innings. Suarez threw a season-high 88 pitches after throwing 75 pitches his last time out as he continues to build up his arm strength and stamina. He now owns a 2.04 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 33:15 K:BB over 35.1 innings and should be on fantasy owners' radars in mixed and AL-only leagues.
Jul 6 2021Suarez (3-2) allowed two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out three over three innings as he took the loss against the Red Sox on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez had some trouble locating the strike zone, throwing just 45 of his 75 pitches for strikes while walking a season-high four batters. It was quite a disappointing outing for the 23-year-old after he threw 5.1 strong innings of relief last Monday. He now owns a 2.37 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 29:13 K:BB over 30.1 innings and lines up to start in Seattle over the weekend.
Jul 1 2021Suarez will pitch out of the rotation going forward, starting Monday against Boston, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez has pitched exclusively out of the bullpen this season but should be stretched out to start, as he threw 5.1 innings in relief of Dylan Bundy (illness) on Monday. He'll now get the chance to take Bundy's spot on a permanent basis. The young lefty has looked good in 27.1 innings of relief this year, striking out a league-average 23.9 percent of opposing batters while producing a 50.7 percent groundball rate, helping him to a 1.98 ERA.
Jun 28 2021Suarez (3-1) allowed one run on two hits and a walk over 5.1 innings Monday, striking out five and earning a win over the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez entered the game in the second inning after Dylan Bundy (illness) was removed. The lone blemish on his outing was a solo shot off the bat of Giancarlo Stanton in the sixth. It was reported Monday that Suarez could eventually move into the starting rotation this season and he certainly helped his case, lowering his ERA to 1.98 with his longest outing of the season.
May 31 2021Suarez (2-0) took the win against Oakland on Sunday, pitching three scoreless and hitless innings. He allowed one walk and struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Starter Jose Quintana was forced out of the game after three innings due to a shoulder injury, leaving Suarez to protect a 4-2 lead. The southpaw thrived in the opportunity, allowing only one baserunner (on a seventh-inning walk) while striking out four. He has yielded only two earned runs over nine innings on the season.
May 28 2021Suarez was recalled by the Angels on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez was sent to Triple-A Salt Lake on Saturday, and he made a minor-league start Tuesday. During that outing, he allowed two hits and a walk in two scoreless innings. The southpaw will now return to the major-league bullpen after right-hander Aaron Slegers was sent down in a corresponding move.
May 22 2021Suarez was optioned Saturday to Triple-A Salt Lake. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez returns to the minor leagues after serving as the 27th man for Thursday's doubleheader, when he allowed a home run and struck out three in two innings of work. The lefty does appear to be the top bullpen option available in Triple-A and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him called up again this season.
May 20 2021Suarez was recalled by the Angels to serve as the 27th man in Thursday's doubleheader against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez spent just over a week with Triple-A Salt Lake but will now return to the major-league bullpen on a temporary basis. The southpaw allowed a run on five hits and three walks while striking out one in four innings during his lone major-league appearance this season.
May 11 2021Suarez was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez allowed just one run on five hits in four innings of relief work Monday against the Astros, picking up the win in his season debut. The Angels need fresh arms in the bullpen, however, so he'll head to the minors with Jaime Barria joining the team in a corresponding move.
May 10 2021Suarez will follow Junior Guerra out of the bullpen Monday against the Astros, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's unclear if this is a traditional opener and follower setup, as the Angels haven't specified exactly how many innings Guerra is supposed to pitch. Suarez has made 17 starts and four relief appearances thus far in his big-league career but hasn't had much success, struggling to a 7.99 ERA and 6.95 FIP.
May 9 2021The Angels recalled Suarez from Triple-A Salt Lake ahead of Sunday's game against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News, Angels manager Joe Maddon said Suarez is "here to help" out of the bullpen in Sunday's series finale, but look for the skipper to stay away from the lefty if starter Jose Quintana isn't chased from the game early. With Alex Cobb (finger) moving to the 10-day injured list Saturday, the Angels will have an opening in the rotation for Monday's game in Houston. Suarez, who had been stretched out for starting duty at Triple-A, would make for a logical choice to get the nod Monday if he isn't needed in relief Sunday.
Mar 21 2021Suarez was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez was being stretched out as a starter this spring while also serving as a bullpen option, but he'll begin the regular season in the minors. The southpaw made three relief appearances during Cactus League play and gave up two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out eight over 4.2 innings. Although Suarez hasn't had much success in the majors early in his career, he could serve as a versatile option for the Angels if the team's pitching staff deals with injuries this season.
Mar 10 2021Suarez is being stretched out as a starter during spring training and is also being looked at as a bullpen option, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez has struck out seven batters over 3.1 innings thus far in Cactus League play, though he has also allowed five baserunners and two runs. The southpaw is a longshot for a rotation role to open the campaign, so he could start the season in the big-league bullpen or as a starter in the minors. Suarez hasn't had much success as a major-leaguer so far, posting a 7.99 ERA and 1.78 WHIP across 83.1 innings, primarily as a starter.
Aug 25 2020Suarez was optioned to the Angels' alternate training site Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez (0-2) started the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Astros but was charged with the loss as he allowed five runs on five hits and four walks while striking out two over one inning. As a result, he'll attempt to right the ship at alternate camp. Right-hander Luke Bard was recalled in a corresponding move.
Aug 24 2020Suarez is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Astros, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez had an inauspicious 2020 debut last Thursday against the Giants, recording only four outs while surrendering five runs on five hits and a walk. Though Julio Teheran was more effective while covering five innings of mop-up duty behind Suarez, Angels manager Joe Maddon with give the 22-year-old lefty at least one more chance to redeem himself. Suarez's poor results last week to go along with the tough road matchup with the Astros probably make it best to avoid him as a streaming option.
Aug 21 2020Suarez (0-1) was tagged with the loss Thursday against the Giants. He allowed five runs on five hits and one walk across 1.1 innings, and he didn't strike out anyone. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez had a golden opportunity to stake a claim to a rotation spot following Julio Teheran's move to the bullpen, but he wasn't able to take advantage of the chance and only recorded four outs before being lifted. This wasn't how the 22-year-old lefty envisioned his season debut going. Given his struggles, it remains to be seen whether he will get the chance to make another start anytime soon.
Aug 19 2020Suarez will be added to the team's active roster Thursday to start against the Giants, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez missed all of summer camp for an undisclosed reason, but he has been ramping up at the team's alternate training site and appears ready to join the big club. It is unclear what kind of pitch limit, if any, the southpaw may be on, but he has plenty of experience as a starter. In 19 appearances last season, Suarez made 15 starts and racked up 81 innings, posting a 7.11 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 72:33 K:BB.
Aug 10 2020Suarez (undisclosed) was reinstated from the injured list and optioned to the Angels' alternate training site Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez missed the start of the season for undisclosed reasons. While he's evidently back to full health, the Angels will not be calling on his services at the big-league level just yet. The lefty struggled to the tune of a 7.11 ERA in his 19 appearances (15 starts) with Anaheim last season and is likely best suited for long relief. Jose Rodriguez was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.
Aug 8 2020Suarez (undisclosed) is stretched out to 1-to-2 innings at the Angels' alternate training site, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez has been ramping up in Long Beach after dealing with an unspecified issue. The southpaw is believed to be healthy, and pitching coach Mickey Callaway said Saturday that he could be available to make a spot start in the majors if necessary. However, he'll likely need to increase his workload before he's considered for a regular role on the major-league roster.
Jul 23 2020Suarez (undisclosed) is not part of the Angels' Opening Day roster. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez did not participate in summer camp due to an undisclosed issue, so his absence from the 30-man roster was inevitable. The Angels do not have a pressing need for a starter, so it's likely that Suarez will end up in the bullpen -- or at the team's alternate training site -- when he is ready to return.
Jul 7 2020Suarez was placed on the 10-day injured list for undisclosed reasons, Andersen Pickard of MLBDailyDish.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's unclear whether the transaction has anything to do with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but the Angels couldn't legally confirm if that were indeed the case. Suarez is in the mix to get some starts this year, though it's not yet clear if he'll be ready to pitch at the start of the regular season.
Mar 27 2020Suarez was competing for a spot in the Opening Day rotation before spring training was suspended, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez pitched well in Cactus League play, allowing only one earned run on three hits across eight innings while notching a 9:2 K:BB. However, the southpaw's bid for a big-league roster spot may be hurt by the delay to the start of the regular season as the extra time may give fellow hurlers Shohei Ohtani (elbow) and Griffin Canning (elbow) the opportunity to recover from their injuries in time for Opening Day. Another factor to keep in mind is that Suarez still has minor-league options remaining, providing the Angels with added incentive to keep him in the minors as long as the team does not have a pressing need in the rotation.
Sep 28 2019Suarez allowed two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six over five innings in a no-decision against the Astros on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Brad Ausmus left Suarez out there to begin the sixth inning after the lefty began his night with five scoreless frames, and the decision backfired. Suarez walked George Springer and then gave up a two-run shot to Jose Altuve before getting the hook. That was home run No. 23 given up by Suarez in just 81 innings this season. He seems like a longshot to make the 2020 Opening Day roster, but Suarez will get to make his case in the spring.
Sep 22 2019Suarez worked on sharpening a "mechanical fix" in his appearance against Houston on Sunday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez had thrown at least 59 pitches in each of his previous outings this season but was limited to 34 tosses over two innings against the Astros. The short appearance was purposely set up to allow Suarez to focus on the mechanical fix he had recently made to his delivery. The 21-year-old gave up one run on two hits while striking out two batters in his two innings of work and reported feeling good about his form following the game.
Sep 19 2019Suarez will work as the primary pitcher Sunday against the Astros, Maria Torres of the Los Angeles Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He will follow opener Jose Rodriguez, who is expected to throw around 50 pitches before coming out. If Rodriguez, who has not allowed a run in his last nine innings, pitches well, Suarez could get the win in relief, but it will be a tall task against Houston's offense.
Sep 17 2019Suarez allowed six runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts across 2.2 innings during a no-decision in relief against the Yankees on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander certainly earned the loss, but the Angels already faced a deficit when he entered. That doesn't help his ERA, though, which has taken a beaten lately, as he's allowed 12 runs in his last 5.2 innings. Suarez is 2-6 with a 7.42 ERA, 1.70 WHIP, .314 batting average against and 64 strikeouts in 74 innings this season. He is scheduled to be back on the mound Sunday at the Astros.
Sep 10 2019Suarez (2-6) took the loss against the Indians on Tuesday, giving up six earned runs on four hits over three innings, striking out one and walking two as the Angels fell 8-0. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander made it out of the first inning unscathed but yielded all six of his runs over the next two frames before getting chased from the contest after three innings and 60 pitches. It was a continuation of the struggles Suarez has endured throughout his rookie campaign, with this outing giving him a 6.94 ERA and 1.64 WHIP across 71.1 innings on the season.
Sep 4 2019Suarez will work behind an opener Thursday against the Athletics, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Suarez worked as a traditional starter in each of his last two outings, but he gave up seven runs on 11 hits over 9.2 innings. Luke Bard will cover the first inning or two before turning things over to the young left-hander Thursday. Suarez has mostly struggled during his rookie season with a 6.71 ERA and 1.65 WHIP through 63 frames.
Aug 31 2019Suarez allowed four runs on four hits and a walk while striking out two over five innings in a no-decision against the Red Sox on Friday.
Aug 29 2019Suarez is listed as the Angels' probable starter for Friday's game against the Red Sox.
Aug 24 2019Suarez (2-5) took the loss Friday, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks over 4.2 innings while striking out three as the Angels fell 5-4 to the Astros.
