Apr 23 2024The Rangers activated Hernandez (lat) from the 15-day injured list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez got a late start to the season due to a right lat strain but is ready to roll now after allowing just three runs with a 14:4 K:BB over 10 rehab innings with Triple-A Round Rock. The righty could eventually work his way into high-leverage situations but will probably be used earlier in games initially.
Apr 3 2024Hernandez (lat) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez struck out one over a scoreless inning in his first appearance with Round Rock. The plan is for him to make a handful of rehab appearances, including working on back-to-back day, before he rejoins the Rangers' bullpen.
Mar 28 2024The Rangers placed Hernandez (lat) on the 15-day injured list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right lat strain that Hernandez suffered late in the 2023 regular season delayed his start to spring training, as he logged just 3.1 innings in Cactus League play before camp came to an end. According to MLB.com, general manager Chris Young said that the Rangers want to see Hernandez pitch multiple innings in a rehab game and work on back-to-back days before bringing him back from the IL. He'll be eligible for activation beginning April 9.
Mar 11 2024Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Monday that Hernandez (shoulder) will make his Cactus League debut Monday, but he unsure whether the reliever will have enough time to prep for Opening Day, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez has been slow played this spring after suffering a right shoulder injury during last year's postseason. He's come along without any apparent setbacks, but the hard-throwing righty might not have enough runway to show he should be in the Opening Day bullpen.
Jan 11 2024Hernandez (shoulder) signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the Rangers on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez had a shaky 2023 season, which he split almost exactly evenly between the majors and Triple-A Round Rock. His 4.3 BB/9 and 1.1 HR/9 served as a bad combination, which led to a 5.40 ERA and 1.58 WHIP while in the big leagues. Hernandez was also sidelined in the playoffs due to a shoulder injury, so his health remains in question this offseason.
Oct 3 2023Hernandez has been left off the Rangers' AL Wild Card Series roster due to a shoulder injury, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez had an up-and-down 2023 season but finished with five straight scoreless appearances, so this is a hit to a bullpen that can ill afford it. Whether Hernandez could potentially be ready should the Rangers advance to the ALDS is unclear.
Sep 13 2023Hernandez was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock on Wednesday, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was optioned to Round Rock in late August but will rejoin the Rangers on Wednesday with Max Scherzer (shoulder) headed for the injured list. Hernandez has struggled to a 6.45 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 25:14 K:BB across 22.1 big-league innings this season.
Aug 28 2023Hernandez was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez will head back to the minors following his meltdown in the 13th inning of a 7-6 loss to the Twins on Sunday, when he issued three straight walks to force in the winning run. Glenn Otto was recalled from Triple-A and will take his spot in the bullpen.
Aug 26 2023Hernandez was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez has been ineffective in 21.2 major-league innings this season, struggling to a 6.65 ERA, a mark which more than doubles the 3.23 career ERA he owned prior to that point. His 1.35 ERA at the Triple-A level is far more encouraging, but it comes with a 16.5 percent walk rate. Grant Anderson was optioned in a corresponding move.
Jun 5 2023Hernandez was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez entered the season as a candidate for saves, but he's struggled to a 6.65 ERA over 25 appearances. He'll look to get back on track in the minors.
May 23 2023Hernandez allowed two hits and struck out two over a scoreless inning in Monday's 6-4 loss to the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez finished the game following another Texas bullpen meltdown. The fact Hernandez wasn't one of the culprits gives the club a sliver of hope he's getting over a recent stretch of poor results. Expected to be an eighth-inning bridge, Hernandez had allowed eight runs (three home runs) over his last 1.2 innings. This was the second consecutive outing in which he did not pitch in a high-leverage situation.
Apr 27 2023Hernandez (0-1) allowed two runs on two hits and did not retire a batter, picking up his first loss in Wednesday's game against the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Texas was swept by Cincinnati in a series that featured shaky bullpen performances. The relief crew had been strong for the Rangers, but on three consecutive days, several members of the group allowed the Reds to take leads in the eighth inning or later, including two walkoff wins. Hernandez entered the day with a 1.80 ERA over his first 10 outings before Nick Senzel's game-ending, two-run home run.
Jan 31 2023Rangers GM Chris Young said Saturday that Hernandez "could be a closer" for the club in 2023, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jose Leclerc, who finished 2022 as Texas' closer, is likely the current frontrunner for the job and was the first of many names mentioned by Young, but Hernandez was the next man brought up by the new GM. Hernandez returned from a lengthy absence last season after he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2021 and had a 2.97 ERA with four saves across 30.1 innings, but he struggled with his command at times and had a 13.0 percent walk rate. The right-hander may not open 2023 as the Rangers' primary closer, but Hernandez should have a high-leverage role and is likely to receive some save chances at some point.
Jan 13 2023Hernandez signed a one-year, $1.275 million contract with the Rangers on Friday to avoid arbitration, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Recovery from a Tommy John procedure in April 2021 kept Hernandez from playing last season until mid-July, but he was effective during the time that he did play. In 30.1 innings, he recorded a 2.97 ERA and 1.42 WHIP -- good enough to keep him in a setup role to start 2023.
Sep 1 2022Hernandez (1-1) blew the save and took the loss against the Red Sox on Thursday, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks while recording only one out (on a strikeout). ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rangers carried a three-run lead into the ninth inning, and they turned to Hernandez to slam the door. The righty reliever clearly didn't have his best stuff, as he threw only 14 of 26 pitches for strikes and walked the first two batters he faced. Boston followed with a pair of hits to plate two runs, and after Hernandez struck out J.D. Martinez and issued an intentional walk to Christian Arroyo, two more Red Sox hits plated the tying and winning runs. Hernandez entered the contest with a 1.69 ERA, but that number ballooned to 3.86 following his first loss and first blown save of the campaign.
Aug 27 2022Hernandez struck out one over a scoreless eighth inning to earn a hold in Friday's 7-6 win over the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez has been the primary closer for the Rangers since late July, but interim manager Tony Beasley had the right-hander pitch the eighth inning in what was heading to be a save situation -- the Rangers were leading 7-4. Instead, Beasley left the ninth inning for Jose Leclerc, who allowed a pair runs while converting the save. It was the second time this week that Beasley skipped Hernandez for a save -- Matt Moore closed out a win Monday.
Aug 20 2022Hernandez (1-0) earned the extra-inning win Saturday over the Twins. He allowed an unearned run on a hit and a walk while striking out one over two innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez was kept in the game for the 10th inning after pitching a scoreless ninth. The right-hander walked Carlos Correa, got two outs, allowed a run to score on an error and then got Jose Miranda to fly out to end the threat. This was Hernandez's first win in 12 appearances this year, and he's maintained a 2.08 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 11:5 K:BB through 12 innings. He's functioned as the head of the Rangers' closer committee with Joe Barlow (finger) out -- Hernandez has four saves, all since July 31, and Jose Leclerc is the only other reliever on the team to log a save in that span.
Aug 15 2022Hernandez picked up the save in Monday's 2-1 win over the Athletics. He threw a perfect inning with two strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 26-year-old has emerged as the top option for the rangers in the ninth inning with Joe Barlow and Dennis Santana on the shelf and Brett Martin failing to get the job done. Hernandez has recorded four saves since July 31 and owns a healthy 2.45 ERA in 11 innings this season. Hernandez should continue to be the top option to close out games for Texas as long as the bullpen remains hampered.
Aug 14 2022Hernandez pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn the save in a 7-4 victory over the Mariners on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez continues to look good as the Texas closer. He now has three saves since July 31 and has pitched well this season with a 1.10 WHIP over 10 appearances. Rangers manager Chris Woodward will likely keep handing him the ball as long as he remains effective, although former closer Joe Barlow (finger) could be a factor again once he's activated from the IL.
Aug 4 2022Hernandez saved Thursday's 3-2 win against the White Sox, striking out two in a perfect ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez received a second straight save chance and delivered again with a stress-free outing. The 26-year-old has recorded saves in two of his last three appearances with five strikeouts across the outings and appears to be the new favorite to close games for Texas. He features a 2.57 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with seven strikeouts in seven innings.
Jul 31 2022Hernandez saved Sunday's 5-2 win against the Angels, striking out one in a 1-2-3 ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his fifth appearance of the campaign, manager Chris Woodward turned to Hernandez after Texas took the lead in the top of the ninth and the 26-year-old delivered an easy frame. Texas has featured a revolving door at closer of late and Hernandez may be the new favorite, as he's permitted four baserunners with four strikeouts across five scoreless innings this season.
Jul 17 2022Hernandez allowed one hit and struck out one over a scoreless inning in Saturday's 3-2 extra-inning loss to Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez was activated off the 60-day injured list and put to work immediately in an important spot with the Rangers trailing by one in the seventh inning. This was the first time he's thrown in a regular-season game since 2020, a year in which he had a 2.90 ERA and was an anchor at the back end of the bullpen. He was slated for a similar role prior to undergoing Tommy John elbow surgery in April of 2021 and could resume his role as a key component late in games in 2022.
Jul 16 2022Hernandez (elbow) was activated off the 60-day injured list Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez is finally ready to go after making his way back from Tommy John surgery, a procedure he underwent in April of 2021. He made 16 rehab appearances, posting a solid 3.60 ERA but a worryingly high 19.7 percent walk rate. Prior to his long absence, Hernandez looked like a potential closer for the Rangers. The team is currently using a closer committee, so Hernandez could get the chance to stake his claim for the role at some point, but he may need some lower-leverage outings first to prove that the control issues he showed in the minors were merely temporary.
Jul 13 2022The Rangers transferred Hernandez's (elbow) rehab assignment from Triple-A Round Rock to Double-A Frisco on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to Levi Weaver of The Athletic, the Rangers were granted a 10-day extension for Hernandez's assignment, which initially began June 3 with Round Rock. The 26-year-old is working his way back from the Tommy John surgery he underwent last April and has looked sharp of late after a somewhat rocky start to his rehab assignment. Over his last 11 outings with Round Rock, Hernandez has struck out 12 over 10.1 innings while allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits and seven walks. Hernandez could handle a high-leverage role out of the Texas bullpen when he's likely activated from the 60-day injured list coming out of the All-Star break.
Jun 4 2022Hernandez (elbow) walked two and struck out one over two-thirds of a scoreless inning for Triple-A Round Rock on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez kicked off a rehab assignment with the Express, his first game action since undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2021. The right-hander had been a starter in the minors but served as high-leverage reliever for the Rangers prior to his injury. It's not yet clear now many rehab appearances he'll need before he's ready to be activated from the 60-day injured list.
Jun 3 2022Hernandez (elbow) was sent to Triple-A Round Rock on Friday for a rehab assignment. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He underwent Tommy John surgery in April 2021 and is now almost 14 months removed from the procedure. The rehab assignment will likely be lengthy, but once healthy, Hernandez should join the big-league bullpen.
May 18 2022Hernandez (elbow) tossed a scoreless inning Tuesday in his appearance at an extended spring training game, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fellow rehabbing reliever Jose Leclerc (elbow) also made an appearance Tuesday, but he's already been pitching in games for about a week and should be ready to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment as soon as next week. Hernandez doesn't look to be too far behind Leclerc, with both tracking toward returns from the 60-day injured list at some point in June. With Joe Barlow having thus far converted all seven of his save chances, Hernandez isn't likely to challenge for the closing role once activated, but he could fill a key late-inning role for Texas.
Mar 18 2022Hernandez (elbow) is trending toward a return in mid-to-late June, Chris Halicke of SI.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez was thought to have a chance to close last season before a preseason elbow injury wound up requiring Tommy John surgery in April. He's said to be slightly behind teammate Jose Leclerc, who underwent the same procedure in late March. Either pitcher could push for the closer role in the second half, as presumptive favorite Joe Barlow is hardly an inner-circle option for the spot, though that would require them pitching at close to full strength immediately after returning to action.
Mar 16 2022Hernandez (elbow) threw a bullpen session Wednesday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Along with Hernandez, fellow rehabbing reliever Jose Leclerc (elbow) also threw a side session as the two work their way back from the Tommy John surgeries they underwent last spring. As relievers, Hernandez and Leclerc should both have slightly shorter recovery timelines than a starting pitcher rehabbing from Tommy John, but the two are still likely to open the campaign on the 60-day injured list.
Apr 12 2021Hernandez underwent Tommy John surgery Monday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez was seen as one of the favorites to close for the Rangers this season before spraining his UCL in early March. The issue hasn't progressed as the team hoped, so he'll now miss the entirety of this season as well as roughly half of the 2022 campaign. With several other injuries striking the Rangers' bullpen, veteran Ian Kennedy has picked up the team's two saves thus far.
Mar 30 2021Hernandez (elbow) landed on the 60-day injured list Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez looked to have a chance to close games this season before being diagnosed with a UCL sprain in early March. His return timeline remains unclear, but the transaction means he'll be out until the end of May at the earliest. There's still a chance he picks up saves in the back half of the season with Jose Leclerc ruled out for more than a year due to Tommy John surgery, but he'll have to prove his health and effectiveness before re-entering that conversation.
Mar 9 2021Hernandez was diagnosed with a low-grade UCL sprain Tuesday and won't throw for at least four weeks, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez isn't currently expected to require surgery, but he'll likely miss a meaningful portion of the regular season. He won't throw until early April at the earliest and will need several weeks to build his arm back up once he's cleared to do so, making late May the most realistic target date for Hernandez to make his 2021 debut. That's bad news for the Rangers, as Hernandez was expected to be at minimum a high-leverage reliever, and at best, the team's top candidate to close games. Jose Leclerc now seems to have a clearer path to reclaiming that role after he missed most of last season due to shoulder issues.
Feb 27 2021Hernandez will start the Rangers' fourth spring game Wednesday against the Angels, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez is not on the radar as a starter, so the decision to have him open a Cactus League game carries little significance. He's expected to serve a key role at the back end of the bullpen, possibly even as the closer.
Feb 20 2021Hernandez was mentioned as a possible closer by manager Chris Woodward, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez had a breakout season in 2020, sporting a 2.90 ERA and 1.03 WHIP over 31 innings. Although he did not have a save opportunity last year, Hernandez often pitched in high-leverage situations earlier in the games for three or more outs. Woodward refused to commit to Jose Leclerc as the team's closer and is mulling over different options for his closer or a no-roles bullpen where usage is determined by game factors.
Sep 5 2020Hernandez (5-1) took the loss against Seattle on Saturday, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing three runs on four hits. He did not register a strikeout or a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez entered a tie game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and retired the final batter of the frame on a flyout. However, he was far less effective in the eighth, giving up three runs on three singles, a double and a hit batsman before recording his first out of the inning. Hernandez entered the contest with a sparkling 1.77 ERA but saw it swell to 2.91 after the rough outing.
Aug 25 2020Hernandez allowed one hit and one walk while striking out three over a scoreless 1.2 innings to earn a hold in Monday's 3-2 win over Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez has been a vital member of the Rangers' bullpen, posting three relief wins and five holds while pitching to a 1.56 ERA over 17.1 innings. As the 11-17 Rangers consider their selling activity at the trade deadline, one player that could be moved is closer Rafael Montero. If they move him, Hernandez could replace him as the team's closer.
Aug 16 2020Hernandez allowed one run on two hits over 1.2 innings to pick up a hold in Saturday's 6-4 win over the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez entered with two on and one out in the seventh and induced a double-play grounder to sidestep danger. He relaxed in the eighth after the Rangers plated three insurance runs. The right-handed setup man has been a nice find for the Rangers, who have worked around injuries to important bullpen pieces. Hernandez has a 2.13 ERA (1.94 FIP) while striking out 15 over 12.2 innings.
Aug 13 2020Hernandez (3-0) earned the win Wednesday against the Mariners. He pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one hit and striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez has gone six straight appearances without allowing a run, and he has posted an 11:2 K:BB in 8.0 innings (six games) during that stretch. He has been very effective this season and, in fact, has posted scoreless appearances in all but one of his outings so far. He owns a 1.64 ERA and a 0.82 WHIP -- as well as a 12.3 K/9 -- in 11.0 innings (nine games) to date.
Aug 2 2020Hernandez (2-0) allowed one walk and struck out four over two scoreless innings to earn the win Sunday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez was the pitcher of record when the Rangers pushed four runs across the plate in the eighth inning. The right-hander has fanned eight batters in five innings. He'll be part of the late-inning crew with closer Jose Leclerc (shoulder) on the 45-day injured list. That closer-by-committee will grow by one this week when the Rangers activate lefty Joely Rodriguez (lat).
Aug 1 2020Hernandez is one of the relievers manager Chris Woodward is considering as a closer in the absence of Jose Leclerc (shoulder), T.R. Sullivan reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: When Leclerc was placed on the 45-day injured list, interest in possible replacements as a closer has surged. Woodward will not designate one arm as a closer and will deploy a closer-by-committee. He's leaning toward right-handers Hernandez and Edinson Volquez.
Jul 25 2020Hernandez worked around a hit and a walk in the eighth inning to record a hold in Friday's 1-0 win over the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rangers' bullpen, including its setup staff, has been hit by injuries, so manager Torey Lovullo went with Hernandez as the bridge to closer Jose Leclerc. The right-hander had a total of 16.2 innings of MLB experience prior to 2020, but it looks like he'll be a trusted reliever early in the season. If Hernandez thrives in the role, he could remain part of the high-leverage crew.
Jul 17 2020Texas manager Chris Woodward informed Hernandez that will be part of the Opening Day lineup, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez, who has nine games of MLB experience, was not expected to break camp with the Rangers in spring training, but now -- due to a number of relievers being out -- Woodward is considering the young right-hander for high-leverage work in 2020. "We may not have the luxury of easing into things," Woodward said. "With a number of guys down, do I feel comfortable with him in a [significant] role? I do. I've loved what I've seen. I've loved his mentality. I can't wait to put him in a situation like that." Hernandez has been a star in camp, allowing just one run in six innings on five hits and one walk while striking out nine, according to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com. That comes after similar dominance in spring training when he struck out 13 over nine innings.
Jul 3 2020Hernandez struck out all four hitters faced Friday, allowing just one foul ball during the at-bats, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez had spent the shutdown in New York, an epicenter of the coronavirus, and was unable restart a throwing program as other teammates did. He only started throwing to live batters earlier this week. "All I can say is he was absolutely filthy," manager Chris Woodward said. "His command was probably the most impressive. He's got elite stuff as we know. Upper 90s, ton of movement on his fastball, really good slider. Changeup was really good." Hernandez is hoping to crack the active roster as a multi-inning reliever and spot starter.
Mar 6 2020Hernandez allowed two hits and a walk while striking out four over three scoreless innings in Thursday's spring game against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez got the start against the Cubs' regulars and handled himself well. "I knew this was a good test for me," Hernandez told Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. "I felt like I controlled myself pretty good and did a good job of making them hit the pitches I wanted. I was trying to attack on every pitch." The right-hander allowed one hard-hit ball among his 47 pitches and got ahead of seven of the 12 batters he faced. Hernandez was originally scheduled to pitch relief in the Rangers' other spring game Thursday, but an injury to Joe Palumbo (heel) forced the team to adjust. Hernandez is competing for a job in the bullpen, though his performance against the Cubs may have sealed the deal. He could fill a multi-inning, middle-relief role, an area of need for the Rangers, who were 23-33 when starters failed to go six innings in 2019.
Mar 1 2020Hernandez allowed two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out two in Saturday's Cactus Leage game against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez hit 100 mph on the gun against his first batter and retired the side quickly before faltering in the second inning. He was predominantly a starter last season at Double-A Frisco, but the 23-year-old threw nine games, mostly in relief, for the Rangers in 2019. A spot in the Rangers' rotation is unlikely, but Hernandez could fill a long-relief role in 2020.
Feb 29 2020Hernandez will start Saturday's game against the White Sox, Dave Sessions of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez will be making his third spring appearance but first start. He's allowed one run on two hits while striking out four in two innings of Cactus League work.
Sep 28 2019Hernandez (2-1) pitched two scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out two and picking up the win in Saturday's 9-4 win over the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez worked behind opener Luke Farrell in the bullpen game for the Rangers, and Hernandez's two spotless innings were enough for the win. The 23-year-old owns a 4.32 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in 16.2 innings this year despite an unsightly 19:13 K:BB across his nine appearances.
Sep 15 2019Hernandez (1-1) gave up three runs on two hits and two walks while striking out four through 2.2 innings to take the loss against the Athletics on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Serving as the opener, Hernandez delivered two scoreless inning s before allowing three baserunners and a two-run home run in the third frame. The 23-year-old has a 3.75 ERA with a 12:9 K:BB through six appearances this season.
Sep 14 2019Hernandez will serve as an opener Sunday against Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hernandez owns a 1.93 ERA in 9.1 innings for the Rangers this season, though his 8:7 K:BB is far from convincing. The Rangers have yet to announce who will follow him Sunday.
Sep 7 2019Hernandez was charged with three runs (one earned) on two hits over 2.2 innings in a no-decision against the Orioles on Saturday. He struck out three batters and walked two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was Hernandez's fourth career appearance and first career start. He pitched three times out of the bullpen following his Aug. 20 promotion, allowing one run while fanning five in 5.2 innings. It's been an encouraging start to his major-league career after Hernandez posted an ERA north of 5.00 at Double-A before joining the big club (96 innings). The 23-year-old righty has good fastball-slider combo and looks like a pitcher to keep an eye on, but Hernandez is not fully stretched out and it's not clear if he will remain in the rotation.
Sep 6 2019Hernandez will start Saturday against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 23-year-old made his big-league debut in late August and has gone on to allow one run while posting a 5:4 K:BB in 5.2 innings of work, all in relief. He's been primarily a starter thus far in his professional career and will get his first chance to pitch in that capacity in the majors Saturday.
Aug 22 2019Hernandez (1-0) allowed one run and two walks while striking out one over 2.1 innings Wednesday to earn the win against the Angels.
Aug 20 2019Hernandez was recalled from Double-A Frisco prior to Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Angels, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Jun 11 2018Hernandez was promoted to Double-A Frisco on Monday. The 21-year-old posted very impressive numbers in 10 starts for High-A Down East this season, backing up a 2.20 ERA with a 7.8 percent walk rate and a very impressive 35.2 percent strikeout rate. Scouts see him as a future back-end starter due to fringy command, but if he keeps up that level of performance, his stock will likely improve.
