Jun 19 2024Kinley allowed four earned runs on two hits and two walks while striking out one to record his only out Tuesday against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley entered the game in the ninth inning with the Rockies up by five runs. He allowed three of the first four batters he faced to reach base before serving up a grand slam to Jason Heyward. He was pulled immediately thereafter, sparing him a loss or blown save, but it was still a disastrous outing that ultimately led to a Rockies loss. Kinley has taken over as Colorado's primary closer, though he's now given up six earned runs across his last three appearances spanning 2.1 frames.
Jun 11 2024Kinley picked up the save Tuesday against the Twins, allowing two runs on two hits with no walks over one inning. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley inherited a three-run lead in the ninth but still had to sweat after allowing a leadoff double to Willi Castro and a two-run homer to Carlos Santana with two outs before icing the game by striking out Jose Miranda. Kinley has emerged as the Rockies preferred ninth-inning option -- supplanting Jalen Beeks -- though Tuesday's close call and Kinley's 8.10 ERA overall could open the door for other relievers to see save chances.
Jun 8 2024Kinley earned a save against the Cardinals on Saturday, allowing one hit and striking out one batter over one scoreless inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley entered with Colorado holding a one-run lead in the ninth inning and allowed a one-out double to Brendan Donovan, but he was able to close out the contest without further trouble. The right-hander was pretty sharp in throwing 10 of 13 pitches for strikes. Kinley has now picked up each of Colorado's past two saves while Jalen Beeks -- who leads the club with six saves on the campaign -- has notched a hold in both of those contests. It's worth noting that Beeks has blown four saves this season while Kinley is a perfect 4-for-4 on save chances despite owning a 7.71 ERA. It appears Kinley may be the slight favorite for ninth-inning opportunities moving forward, though that's far from certain given the rockiness of Colorado's bullpen as a whole.
Jun 6 2024Kinley allowed a hit and struck out one batter in one-third of an inning to earn the save in Thursday's 3-2 win over the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jalen Beeks entered the game in the eighth inning and got five outs, but Kinley was the one to get the last out for the save. This was Kinley's fourth scoreless outing in his last eight -- he's given up too many runs to be reliable on a regular basis, though he hasn't taken a blown save yet in 2024. The right-hander is at three saves and four holds with an 8.03 ERA, 1.82 WHIP and 27:14 K:BB over 24.2 innings.
May 26 2024Kinley tossed a perfect inning and earned a save against the Phillies on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley needed just nine pitches to quickly close out the 5-2 victory. It was his second save of the year and first since May 15. Jalen Beeks has blown his last two save chances and allowed a run in three straight outings. His grip on the closer role doesn't seem very secure right now. Kinley has produced a 2.45 ERA with a 10:2 K:BB over his last 11 innings.
May 15 2024Kinley picked up the save Tuesday in a 6-3 win over the Padres after pitching a clean ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley was called upon for the save opportunity with both Jalen Beeks and Justin Lawrence unavailable and sent down the Padres' 9-1-2 hitters in order. He's now working on 5.2 consecutive scoreless innings and has picked up a win, a hold and a save in each of his last three appearances. Kinley still owns an 8.44 ERA, 2.00 WHIP and 14:11 K:BB in 16 innings after some pretty rough outings earlier in the year.
Mar 30 2024Kinley allowed one hit and one walk while striking out one across a scoreless eighth inning in Saturday's game against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley pitched with a five-run lead in a setup role for Justin Lawrence. It was his second appearance of the season, with the first coming in Friday's loss to Arizona. Though the team hasn't yet had a save chance, Kinley appears more likely to be in line for holds rather than saves to begin the new year.
Mar 29 2024Kinley allowed one hit and walked two while striking out one in a scoreless inning Friday against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley is a candidate to serve as Colorado's closer, though he entered Friday's game with the Rockies down 7-3 in the eighth inning. He was also shaky in his first outing of the campaign, allowing a leadoff double before walking two. He escaped the jam, but it appears that Justin Lawrence may be in line to get the first chance for saves.
Mar 16 2024Kinley has thrown five scoreless innings while maintaining a 7:2 K:BB during Cactus League action. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley is in competition for the closer role with Justin Lawrence, and both pitchers have performed well this spring. Kinley has allowed only one base hit across his five innings of work and has at least one strikeout in all five of his appearances. That doesn't guarantee he'll be first in line for save chances, but he's certainly made a strong case for the role.
Feb 16 2024Kinley will compete this spring with Justin Lawrence to be the Rockies' closer, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley missed much of the 2023 season following flexor tendon surgery but led the club with five saves in September. He didn't exactly pitch well that month, though, blowing one save opportunity and allowing five runs over 10.2 innings. It's a situation unlikely to bear much fantasy fruit.
Sep 30 2023Kinley (0-4) allowed one earned run on two hits while striking out one to take the loss Friday against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley entered the game in the ninth inning with the score knotted at 6-6. He allowed a pair of singles to begin the frame before ultimately allowing the game-winning run to score on a sacrifice fly. Despite maintaining an ugly 6.46 ERA and 1.70 WHIP across 15.1 innings this season, Kinley has earned three of Colorado's last four saves and is likely to be called upon if a save situation arises in the team's final two games.
Sep 27 2023Kinley recorded his fifth save of the season in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Dodgers, giving up a hit and striking out one batter in a scoreless ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All five of Kinley's saves have come in September, as the 32-year-old righty has fallen into the closer role after a number of other relievers spit the bit. He's been marginally effective, blowing only one of six save chances while being scored upon in two of nine appearances on the month, leaving him with a 4.15 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 7:4 K:BB over 8.2 innings. Depending on what reinforcements Colorado adds to its bullpen over the winter, Kinley could head into spring training next year as the favorite to retain the closing job.
Sep 20 2023Kinley (0-3) took the loss in Tuesday's 2-0 loss to the Padres. He allowed two runs on one hit and one walk while striking out two over two-thirds of an inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley stepped into the game in the bottom of the ninth with the score 0-0 and managed to strike out two of the first three batters he faced. However, Xander Bogaerts tagged him for a two-run shot to walk it off for the Padres and give Kinley his third loss of 2023. Kinely has yielded mixed results over his last four outings, logging a pair of scoreless saves while giving up four total runs across his other two appearances, including a blown save and Tuesday's loss.
Sep 16 2023Kinley earned a save against the Giants in the nightcap of a doubleheader Saturday, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out one batter over one scoreless inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley got the call with the Rockies up three runs in the ninth inning and made things interesting, loading the bases on a pair of singles and a walk. However, he was able to get Blake Sabol to pop out to end the contest and nail down the save. Kinley has moved into the primary closer role for Colorado in September, notching four saves in five chances while allowing two runs on six hits and posting a 4:3 K:BB over seven frames.
Sep 12 2023Kinley (0-2) blew a save and took the loss against the Cubs on Monday, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk over one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley got the opportunity to notch his second save over his past three appearances, but he couldn't come through . The right-hander entered in the ninth inning trying to protect a one-run lead and quickly fell behind when each of the Cubs' first three batters reached base, with two of them scoring. To his credit, Kinley rebounded to retire the final three hitters he faced without allowing another run to cross, but that wasn't enough to prevent him from taking the loss. Kinley's recent save chances have come following a rough stretch by Justin Lawrence, who earned a hold with a scoreless 10th frame Monday. Lawrence hasn't allowed any runs over his past three outings and could still be in the closer mix, especially after Kinley's poor outing against Chicago.
Sep 5 2023Kinley pitched a perfect inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With two saves over three appearances in September, it appears Kinley has entered his name into the closer conversation for the Rockies. He's allowed just one walk over 2.1 innings this month while striking out two. The right-hander is at a 6.75 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 10:3 K:BB over eight innings for the season after recovering from flexor tendon surgery in June 2022. In addition to Kinley, Justin Lawrence is also in the mix for closing assignments.
Sep 2 2023Kinley struck out the only batter he faced to earn the save in Saturday's 8-7 win over the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley wasn't initially brought in for the save chance, but Justin Lawrence gave up two runs and left with the bases loaded. Kinley was able to strike out Spencer Horwitz to end the threat, earning his first save since 2019 in the process. This was Kinley's first appearance since Aug. 16 after a bout of elbow inflammation. The right-hander has a 9.00 ERA, 2.00 WHIP and 9:3 K:BB through six innings this season. While he hasn't pitched much, it's unlikely he gets a lot of high-leverage looks until he can prove himself.
Sep 1 2023The Rockies reinstated Kinley (elbow) from the 15-day injured list Friday, Kelsey Wingert-Linch of AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley spent over a year on the injured list to begin the season while rehabbing from flexor tendon surgery, but he ended up back on the IL on Aug. 20 with inflammation in the same elbow. Now that he's healthy again, he'll rejoin the Rockies' bullpen and look to improve upon his less-than-stellar 9.53 ERA and 2.12 WHIP.
Aug 28 2023Kinley (elbow) will rehab with Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday, Kelsey Wingert-Linch of AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's unclear how much work Kinley will do, but it's encouraging that he is getting the green light a little over a week after landing on the injured list.
Aug 20 2023The Rockies placed Kinley on the 15-day injured list Sunday with right elbow inflammation, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After undergoing flexor tendon surgery last June, Kinley spent more than a year recovering and rehabbing before the Rockies brought him back from the 60-day injured list Aug. 1. Upon being activated, Kinley worked his way back into the setup ranks but largely struggled over his seven appearances, giving up six runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out eight over 5.2 innings. Now that Kinley is back on the IL with another injury in his surgically repaired elbow, the Rockies are likely to proceed cautiously with bringing him back. Colorado called up right-hander Tommy Doyle from Triple-A Albuquerque to replace Kinley in the bullpen.
Aug 1 2023Colorado activated Kinley (elbow) from the 60-day injured list Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Finally recovered from his June 2022 flexor tendon surgery, Kinley will join the Rockies bullpen ahead of Tuesday's game against the Padres. He got hammered in his first minor-league rehab appearance back in early July but rallied for a 3.68 ERA and 9:1 K:BB over his next seven outings covering 7.1 innings. Prior to going under the knife last season, Kinley was a valuable setup man for Colorado, compiling a 0.75 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 27:6 K:BB in 24 innings.
Jul 9 2023Kinley (elbow) is expected to move his rehab assignment from the rookie-level Arizona Complex League to High-A Spokane by the end of the upcoming week, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley, who has been on the shelf all season while recovering from June 2022 flexor tendon surgery, rebounded nicely after giving up six earned runs while recording one out in his first rehab outing in the ACL on Tuesday. After two days of rest, Kinley returned to the hill Friday and delivered a scoreless inning. The right-hander will be re-examined in Denver this coming Thursday, and if all goes well, he'll head to Spokane. Kinley will likely make at least a couple appearances with Spokane before advancing to Triple-A Albuquerque, and then eventually rejoining the Colorado bullpen.
Jun 28 2023Kinley (elbow) is set to begin a rehab assignment next week in the Arizona Complex League, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley is a full 12 months removed from June 2022 surgery to repair the flexor tendon in his right elbow and should be an option for the Rockies' bullpen at some point in the second half of the 2023 campaign.
Mar 7 2023Kinley (elbow) has begun throwing from 120 feet, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley had season-ending surgery in late June of 2022 and is still recovering. He hopes to throw from a mound at some point in April before progressing to bullpen sessions. Despite the progression, Kinley is not expected back prior to the All-Star break.
Mar 4 2023The Rockies placed Kinley (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Saturday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: July 2022 elbow surgery was already expected to sideline Kinley for the start of 2023. With a stellar 0.75 ERA and 10 holds in 24 innings last season, the righty showed he absolutely belongs in the Rockies' bullpen this year once healthy. The move frees up a 40-man roster spot for reliever Brad Hand, whom Colorado signed Saturday.
Nov 18 2022Kinley (elbow) signed a three-year extension including a club option for 2026 with the Rockies on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley was forced to miss the majority of 2022 after undergoing season-ending surgery on his right elbow in July. Prior to his surgery, he had recorded a 0.75 ERA and 1.13 WHIP through 24 innings, putting him on pace for what could've been by far the best season of his career. There's no hard timetable for his return in 2023, but it's likely he will miss the first few weeks of the season.
Jun 28 2022Kinley is scheduled to undergo season-ending surgery in Dallas this week to repair the flexor tendon in his right elbow, Danielle Allentuck of the Denver Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rockies were initially fearful that Kinley's elbow injury would require the second Tommy John surgery of his career -- he previously had the operation in 2009 as a senior in high school -- but he'll instead opt for a less intensive arm procedure. According to Thomas Harding of MLB.com, Kinley will still miss the remainder of the season, but because his upcoming procedure entails an 8-to-12-month recovery period, he'll have an outside shot at being available for the start of the 2023 campaign. Before the elbow injury surfaced, Kinley had been the Rockies' top reliever. He'll conclude the campaign with an 0.75 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 27:6 K:BB in 24 innings to go with one win and 10 holds.
Jun 19 2022The Rockies transferred Kinley (elbow) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Sunday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The transaction is a procedural move, as Kinley was already expected to miss the remainder of the season after he was diagnosed Wednesday with a right elbow strain and a flexor tear. The Rockies haven't yet decided if Tommy John surgery is in the forecast for the right-hander, but he'll require months of rest and rehab even if he's able to forgo a procedure. Colorado reinstated infielder Garrett Hampson (illness) from the COVID-19-related injured list to fill Kinley's spot on the 40-man roster.
Jun 15 2022Manager Bud Black said Wednesday that Kinley (elbow) is likely out for the season, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley was initially believed to be dealing with elbow soreness, but he's been diagnosed with a right elbow strain and a flexor tear following further examination. The right-hander will undergo a procedure soon, and the team hasn't yet ruled out Tommy John surgery. He was in the midst of a career-best season prior to his injury, as he posted a 0.75 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 24 innings over 25 appearances.
Jun 14 2022Kinley (elbow) will miss more time than the Rockies initially hoped, Nick Groke of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley landed on the injured list with a right elbow ulnar nerve injury Sunday. While it initially looked as though he may not miss too much time, the Rockies are now somewhat more pessimistic. He's set to consult a surgeon this week, at which point his timeline should become clearer.
Jun 12 2022Kinley hit the 15-day injured list with a right elbow ulnar nerve injury Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley has had an excellent start to the season, cruising to an 0.75 ERA in 24 innings of relief. The move was backdated to Thursday, meaning Kinley will be eligible to return June 24, but it's unclear if a minimum-length absence is in play. Chad Smith was recalled to take his place in the bullpen.
May 24 2022Kinley (1-1) allowed one earned run on three hits while striking out one across one inning to take the loss Monday against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He wasn't hit hard, but an infield hit by Yoshi Tsutsugo was enough to push home a run and tag Kinley with his first loss of the season. That ended an eight-appearance scoreless stretch, during which Kinley struck out seven and allowed only three hits across 7.1 frames. Overall, he has maintained an excellent 1.10 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 18:5 K:BB in 16.1 innings.
May 18 2022Kinley (1-0) allowed one hit but struck out two in a scoreless eighth inning to earn the win Wednesday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley allowed a two-out single but was in command throughout his appearance. He has been excellent to start the season, allowing only one earned run across his first 14.1 frames while tallying a 15:5 K:BB. Kinley also has seven holds and has been the team's primary setup man. Though Daniel Bard has generally pitched well in the closer role to begin the season, he had allowed at least one earned run in each of his last three appearances prior to logging the save Wednesday against the Giants. If Bard's struggles continue, Kinley could begin to see work in save situations.
Apr 3 2022Kinley tossed a perfect fifth inning to earn the save in Sunday's Cactus League win over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley gave up a solo homer in Wednesday's loss to the Diamondbacks, but he bounced back with his third scoreless outing in four relief appearances this spring. The right-hander picked up 10 holds for the Rockies last year while posting a 4.73 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 70.1 innings across 70 relief appearances. However, he faces an uphill battle for high-leverage work since Colorado has Alex Colome, Daniel Bard and Carlos Estevez available in the late innings.
Nov 30 2021Kinley agreed to a one-year, $1.025 million deal with the Rockies on Tuesday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old pitched in 70 games out of the bullpen for Colorado last season and posted a 4.73 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 68:26 K:BB over 70.1 innings. He had 10 holds and should enter spring training with a strong chance to be on the Opening Day roster.
Sep 5 2021Kinley (2-2) tossed a perfect sixth inning to earn the win over Atlanta on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley has had limited fantasy value as a middle reliever this year, but he's limited run production recently and has recorded a 0.71 ERA and 0.79 WHIP in 12.2 innings across his last 11 appearances. He now has two wins and six holds in 2021 but has pitched mainly in low-leverage situations.
Jun 22 2021Kinley (1-2) was tagged with the loss in relief Tuesday against the Mariners after giving up one run on one hit while fanning one across his lone inning of work. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley pitched the eighth inning but gave up the decisive hit of the game on a homer from Shed Long. The right-hander has given up runs in four of his last seven outings while allowing homers in three of those appearances, including each of the last two. He owns a 5.87 ERA across nine outings (9.2 innings) this month.
Jun 19 2021Kinley (1-1) allowed two runs on two hits and a walk in one inning, taking the loss versus Milwaukee on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley was called on to protect a one-run lead in the ninth inning, but he allowed a two-run home run to Willy Adames. That resulted in Kinley's second blown save in 29 outings this year. He's posted a 4.75 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 28:17 K:BB across 30.1 innings as a low-leverage relief option.
Mar 26 2021Manager Bud Black said Kinley (oblique) is fine after throwing a scoreless inning during Thursday's spring game against the Angels, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old had been sidelined since March 7 with left oblique soreness, but he returned to game action Thursday and had no issues. Kinley had a 5.32 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 26:12 K:BB over 23.2 innings for the Rockies last season and is expected to be on the Opening Day roster.
Mar 20 2021Kinley has been diagnosed with left oblique soreness, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Bud Black revealed Saturday that Kinley has been dealing with a side issue, and he's now been officially diagnosed with an oblique injury. The right-hander threw a side session Friday and is slated to throw in a simulated game Sunday. Whether Kinley's injury impacts his status for Opening Day remains to be seen.
Aug 3 2020Kinley fired one scoreless inning and earned a hold in Monday's win against the Giants. He didn't allow any hits or walks and failed to record a strikeout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley has been dominant over his first four appearances with the Rockies after being claimed off waivers during the offseason. He hasn't allowed any runs or hits while posting a 5:2 K:BB over 3.1 innings. Despite his productive start to the season, the right-hander likely won't work in save situations since Jairo Diaz has been effective in that role recently.
Dec 9 2019Kinley was claimed off waivers by the Rockies on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kinley threw 49.1 innings for the Marlins last season, finishing with a respectable 3.65 ERA. His underlying numbers didn't back that figure up, however, as he struck out a modest 20.8 percent of opposing batters while walking 16.3 percent.
Aug 29 2019Kinley (3-1) earned the win Thursday after holding the Reds scoreless with a pair of strikeouts across two innings.

May 1 2018Kinley was returned to the Marlins on Tuesday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.Kinley was selected by the Twins in this year's Rule 5 draft, but he was ultimately designated for assignment and sent back to the Marlins after struggling mightily in four appearances with Minnesota (24.30 ERA across 3.1 innings). The 27-year-old will report to Triple-A New Orleans.
Mar 27 2018Kinley has secured a spot in the Twins' Opening Day bullpen, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. With Phil Hughes (oblique) expected to open the season on the disabled list, Kinley will take his spot in the team's Opening Day bullpen. Kinley, a Rule 5 pick, will have to stay on the Twins' active roster all season if they want to retain him. He struggled in spring training (5.73 across 11 innings) and at Double-A last season (5.19 ERA across 26 innings), so he likely won't see anything other than low-leverage situations with the big club.
Mar 6 2018Kinley gave up an unearned run in one inning of work in Monday's spring training loss to the Phillies. He's given up two earned runs in four innings with four strikeouts and three walks this spring. "When he gets ahead [in the count], it's hard to cover a 90-mph slider and a 98-mph fastball," manager Paul Molitor told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "He's an interesting character. That arm's pretty big. We're just trying to keep bringing it along."Kinley can reach 99 mph on his fastball but has had control issues during his minor league career (5.5 BB/9 at Double-A last year). Kinley is a Rule 5 pick, so the Twins would need to carry him on the active roster all season to retain him. That seems unlikely given the free agent additions to Minnesota's relief corps, but he has an outside chance to win a final bullpen spot.
Dec 14 2017Kinley was selected by the Twins with the 13th pick in the Rule 5 draft Thursday.A 26-year-old right-handed reliever, Kinley logged a 3.54 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 72 strikeouts in 53.1 innings last season between Double-A and Triple-A. The Twins will have to keep him on the active roster all season, otherwise he will be exposed to waivers and offered back to the Marlins.
Dec 14 2017Kinley was selected by the Twins with the 20th pick in the Rule 5 draft Thursday.A 26-year-old right-handed reliever, Kinley logged a 3.54 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 72 strikeouts in 53.1 innings last season between Double-A and Triple-A. The Twins will have to keep him on the active roster all season, otherwise he will be exposed to waivers and offered back to the Marlins.
