Mar 23 2025Barlow, who has pitched to a 4.50 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 7:0 K:BB over eight innings this spring, could be an option to close games after Alexis Diaz (hamstring) was ruled out for the start of the 2025 season. "I don't think it's necessary that we name a closer," manager Terry Francona told Gordon Wittenmeyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Francona said he hadn't "given it a ton of thought yet" and didn't seem in a hurry to settle on one arm in the ninth inning, saying, "We'll just see how we get there, and we'll do it the best way we can." Barlow has racked up 58 career saves to date, including a career-high 24 saves in 2022, but Taylor Rogers and Emilio Pagan also have past closing experience. Graham Ashcraft is also moving to the bullpen and has expressed to the club a desire to work toward the closer role. The club still wants Diaz "to be that guy," Francona said, but a strong performance by someone else in the meantime could change the equation.
Feb 11 2025Barlow agreed to a one-year, $2.5 million contract with the Reds on Tuesday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow has posted a 4.25 ERA and 68:31 K:BB over 55 innings last season before being released by the Guardians in September. The 32-year-old's velocity and results have trended down the past two seasons, though he's still submitted a 27.2 percent strikeout rate over that stretch. In Cincinnati, Barlow should help set up for closer Alexis Diaz.
Sep 12 2024The Guardians released Barlow on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow cleared waivers after being designated for assignment and is now a free agent. The veteran reliever could catch on with a new team for the final weeks, but he would not be eligible for the postseason roster. Barlow has posted a 4.25 ERA and 68:31 K:BB over 55 innings this season.
Sep 8 2024The Guardians designated Barlow for assignment Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow has struggled since the start of August with 11 earned runs allowed across 11.2 innings, and it will cost him his place on the roster. The veteran right-hander had a 3.12 ERA in 50 outings this season prior to that stretch, so he could land somewhere for the final weeks of the season, though he won't be playoff eligible with a different organization.
Jul 10 2024Barlow (3-3) allowed a walk in a scoreless and hitless inning to earn the extra-inning win Tuesday over the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow was on the hook for the loss Monday, but he was better Tuesday as the Guardians evened the series at one game apiece. The right-hander's biggest problem this season has been with free passes -- he has a 5.3 BB/9 and a 1.35 WHIP. Barlow is still finding plenty of success with his slider and curveball, which collectively account for nearly 70 percent of his pitches. This is the second year in a row he's had significant struggles with his four-seam fastball, which opponents have batted .360 and slugged .520 against in 2024. With a 3.58 ERA and 17 holds, Barlow has yet to lose out on high-leverage looks, but all of Hunter Gaddis, Tim Herrin and Cade Smith have produced better results while seeing similar usage, though Barlow's 12.7 K/9 is tops on the team.
Jul 8 2024Barlow (2-3) allowed a run on two hits and a walk over one-third of an inning, taking the loss versus the Tigers on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow put runners on the corners before giving up the lone run of the game on a fielder's choice. He allowed just two runs over 12.1 innings from the start of June through July 4, but he's given up another two runs over his last two appearances. Barlow is at a 3.68 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 53:20 K:BB through 36.2 innings while adding two saves and 17 holds. Barlow is part of the mix for setup duties, but his lofty walk rate continues to hold him back compared to many of Cleveland's other relievers.
Jun 24 2024Barlow struck out the side in the ninth inning of Monday's win against Baltimore, logging his second save of the season. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With closer Emmanuel Clase pitching the previous two days for Cleveland, Barlow was called upon in the ninth to preserve a one-run lead. The 31-year-old made the most of his opportunity, but he will see few save chances while Emmanuel Clase his healthy. Barlow owns a 3.66 ERA, a 1.31 WHIP and a 44:17 K:BB over 32 innings this season, adding 16 holds and two saves.
Jun 5 2024Barlow pitched a perfect inning to earn a hold in Tuesday's 8-5 win over the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow has given up six runs over his last seven innings, but he's also picked up seven holds over nine appearances in that span. He's been a little shaky all season, as evidenced by a middling 3.91 ERA to go with a 1.34 WHIP and 34:12 K:BB through 25.1 innings, but Barlow still leads the Guardians with 15 holds. He's maintained a setup role while adding one save and a 2-2 record, though Cade Smith and Hunter Gaddis have been more reliable parts of the bridge to closer Emmanuel Clase.
Apr 28 2024Barlow (2-2) allowed a hit and a walk while striking out one in a scoreless inning to earn the extra-innings win Saturday over Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow took care of business in the bottom of the 10th inning, and Cleveland pulled ahead in the 11th. It's a fourth straight scoreless outing for Barlow, who has two wins and two holds in that span. The setup man is at a 3.46 ERA, 1.38 wHIP and 15:8 K:BB through 13 innings overall, though he's improved after a rocky start to 2024.
Apr 23 2024Barlow (1-2) struck out one without allowing a baserunner over two-thirds of an inning to earn the win Tuesday over the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow entered with one on and one out in the top of the seventh inning. The baserunner, Rob Refsnyder, was erased when he was caught stealing, and Barlow struck out Enmanuel Valdez to end the inning. The Guardians then rallied ahead in their half of the frame. After a rough start to the season, Barlow has limited opponents to one run on three hits and a walk over his last 5.1 innings. It is notable that he entered the game with the Guardians behind while Hunter Gaddis, who has worked himself into the late-inning mix, pitched the eighth. Barlow is at a 4.09 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 13:7 K:BB through 11 innings overall, adding a save and five holds through 12 appearances.
Apr 17 2024Barlow struck out two in a perfect inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 10-7 extra-innings win over the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow has been shaky this year, but he showed no trouble in protecting a three-run lead in the 11th inning. He threw nine of 14 pitches for strikes. This was his third consecutive scoreless outing, and it earned him his first save of the season after Emmanuel Clase failed to lock things down in the 10th. Barlow has a 4.32 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 9:6 K:BB with four holds through 8.1 innings this season.
Apr 10 2024Barlow (0-2) allowed two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out one over one inning to take the loss Tuesday versus the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow gave up a two-run double to Dominic Fletcher in the eighth inning, and that was the decisive play of the game. Barlow entered Tuesday with three consecutive scoreless outings, but he's been a bit shaky in a high-leverage role. He has four holds and two losses through six appearances while pitching to a 6.35 ERA and 2.12 WHIP over 5.2 innings. With pitchers like Nick Sandlin and Hunter Gaddis starting the season well, continued struggles from Barlow could see him drop a couple of spots in Cleveland's bullpen hierarchy.
Mar 31 2024Barlow (0-1) took the loss Sunday versus the Athletics, allowing a run on two hits and a walk over one-plus innings while striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow pitched a perfect eighth inning but allowed three straight baserunners aboard to start the ninth. Eli Morgan then walked the only batter he faced, which forced in the decisive run. It's not unusual for Barlow to be tasked with getting more than three outs at a time, so his usage Sunday isn't particularly noteworthy. The big concern here is that he's allowed two runs and walked three batters over two innings to begin the season. Barlow is projected to be a setup man to closer Emmanuel Clase, but he could lose those assignments if he can't get on track quickly. Morgan and Nick Sandlin are also experienced relievers who could be in the mix for high-leverage work.
Mar 5 2024Barlow has allowed two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out three over three Cactus League innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow's a veteran, so his rough start to spring shouldn't lead to too much panic. He struggled a bit in 2023, pitching to a career-worst 4.37 ERA with a 1.40 WHIP and 79:34 K:BB over 68 innings between the Royals and the Padres. His 3.19 FIP last year suggests he was somewhat unlucky, which is a silver lining. Barlow offers ninth-inning experience -- he has 56 career saves and has also added 48 holds. Despite the spring struggles, he should serve as the primary setup man to closer Emmanuel Clase.
Jan 11 2024Barlow signed a one-year, $6.7 million deal with the Guardians on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Guardians acquired Barlow from the Padres in mid-November, the second time in the calendar year he was dealt. It was a disappointing 2023 season for the reliever -- he posted a 4.37 ERA and 1.40 WHIP across 68 innings -- but he had been reliable for a few years prior. If Barlow can bounce back, he should occupy a high-leverage role in Cleveland's bullpen.
Aug 3 2023Barlow earned a hold against Colorado on Wednesday, striking out three batters in 1.2 scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After being acquired in a trade with the Royals on Tuesday, Barlow saw his first action as a Padre on Wednesday, coming on with San Diego holding a 4-1 lead with one out in the sixth frame. The right-handed reliever's own error put a runner on base in that inning, but that was the only misstep by Barlow in an impressive outing during which he threw 15 of 20 pitches for a strike and fanned three batters. Josh Hader is entrenched as the Padres' closer, so Barlow probably won't have many chances to add to the 13 saves he notched while with Kansas City, but he should still see plenty of high-leverage situations as a bridge to Hader.
Aug 1 2023The Padres acquired Barlow from the Royals on Tuesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.comreports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow has 13 saves this season to go along with an ugly 5.35 ERA, but Kansas City was still able to cash in at the trade deadline. The right-hander pitched to a 2.18 ERA last season and could fill a setup role for closer Josh Hader if he can rediscover that form with the Friars.
Jul 30 2023Barlow gave up a hit and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Saturday to record his 13th save of the season in a 10-7 win over the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander rebounded from his third blown save of the season in impressive fashion, fanning Alex Kirilloff and Jorge Polanco en route to his fourth save in July. Barlow's recent stumbles have left him with a 5.35 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 47:22 K:BB through 38.2 innings on the season, but his high-leverage experience could still make him an attractive target for a contender at the trade deadline.
Jul 29 2023Barlow allowed two runs on two hits and a walk over one inning, taking a blown save in Friday's 8-5 extra-inning win over the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow couldn't protect a two-run lead in the ninth inning, and the Twins would take the lead in the 10th before Bobby Witt's walk-off grand slam won it for the Royals. Barlow has been bad over his last 10 appearances, a span in which he's allowed 12 runs (11 earned) in 10 innings while taking two of his three blown saves on the year. He's now at a 5.50 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 45:22 K:BB with 12 saves in 15 chances over 37.2 innings. Barlow may not stay with the Royals beyond the trade deadline, and he would likely have to settle for a setup or committee role at best with any contender if he is traded.
Jul 24 2023Barlow allowed two hits in a scoreless inning and earned a save against the Guardians on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow found himself in a bit of a jam but still finished off the 5-3 victory. He gave up seven runs (six earned) in his previous two outings but still appears to be clinging to the closer role in Kansas City. Barlow has converted 12 of his 14 save chances despite registering an unsightly 5.15 ERA through 36.2 innings this season.
Jul 10 2023Barlow fired a scoreless ninth inning to pick up the save Sunday against the Guardians. He allowed one hit and struck out a batter in the process. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow should've ended the game with a strikeout of Will Brennan, but things got extended after Brennan reached on a dropped third strikeout to bring the tying run to the plate. Barlow wound up getting Myles Straw to line out to close out the game and grab his second save in July. The 30-year-old now sits at a 4.09 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 44:16 K:BB over 33 innings this year. He certainly could be another trade candidate for the Royals after they already shipped out Aroldis Chapman, where he'd likely move into a setup role on a playoff team.
Jul 2 2023Barlow earned a save against the Dodgers on Saturday, allowing one walk and striking out one batter over 1.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow blew his previous save opportunity against Cleveland on Tuesday, but he bounced back against the Dodgers. The right-hander entered in the eighth frame with two runners on, two outs and Kansas City up by two runs, and he walked Mookie Betts to load the bases before getting Freddie Freeman to end the inning with a groundout. Barlow followed with a 1-2-3 ninth to notch the save. The veteran now has 10 saves on the campaign after registering a career-high 24 last season.
Jun 27 2023Barlow (2-4) blew the save and took the loss in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to the Guardians. He allowed two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out one over one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow inherited a 1-0 lead in the ninth but failed to convert on the save opportunity, giving up a single to Josh Naylor and a walk to Andres Gimenez before Will Brennan smacked a bases-clearing double to give Cleveland the lead and eventual win. Through 28 appearances (28.2 innings) Barlow owns a 4.40 ERA and a 40:14 K:BB with nine saves while acting as the Royals primary closer all season.
Jun 22 2023Barlow earned a save against the Rays on Thursday, allowing one hit and striking out two batters in a scoreless inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow faced a tough task in the outing, as he was summoned to go up against the heart of the Rays' order with KC holding a one-run ninth-inning lead. The veteran gave up a one-out single to Luke Raley but proceeded to strike out Randy Arozarena and Isaac Paredes to nail down the save. Though Barlow's 3.90 season ERA isn't anything to shout about, he's been effective in finishing off contests, recording nine saves in 10 chances.
Jun 20 2023Barlow picked up the save in Tuesday's 1-0 win over Detroit. He allowed a hit while logging a strikeout in a scoreless inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow improved to 8-for-9 in save chances, finishing out Kansas City's shutout victory. The 30-year-old Barlow had been shaky of late, allowing three runs over his last three appearances (2.2 innings). He now sports a 4.05 ERA with a 1.28 WHIP and 37:13 K:BB over 26.2 innings this season. Barlow is still the primary closing option in Kansas City, though save chances have been rare on a last-place Royals team.
Jun 5 2023Barlow pitched a scoreless ninth to get the save Sunday over the Rockies, allowing two hits and striking out the side. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow was able to work around two base hits by striking out the side to pick up the save. Due to the Royals' struggles, it was Barlow's first save since May 17, though it was his fifth appearance since then. The 30-year-old has been dependable overall with his closing duties, registering a 3.52 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 33:11 K:BB over 23 innings.
May 29 2023Barlow (2-3) pitched a hitless ninth while walking one and striking out a batter to pick up the win over the Nationals on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow set down the Nationals on 17 pitches with the game tied up 2-2 in the ninth and wound up with his second win after the Royals walked it off. The 30-year-old has allowed a run just once over his last 13 outings but has just two saves and both his wins this month. Barlow has now pitched on consecutive days and likely should have the day off Monday against the Cardinals. He now owns a 3.86 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 29:11 K:BB over 21 innings.
May 23 2023Barlow dropped to 1-3 in Monday's 8-5 loss to the Tigers in 10 innings after allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts across 1.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After keeping the game tied in the ninth inning, Barlow saw his scoreless streak end at 10.2 innings after he yielded a three-run double to Javier Baez in the top of the 10th. Barlow has a 4.26 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 27:10 K:BB through 19 innings this season, and he's generally pitched well of late, though save chances remain sparse while pitching for the 14-35 Royals. He's converted six of his seven save opportunities to date.
May 17 2023Barlow picked up the save Wednesday with a perfect inning, including one strikeout against the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow made quick work of the Padres in the ninth, as he needed just seven pitches to retire the side. The closer has worked 10 straight outings, and 10.2 innings, since he last allowed a run on April 19. All seven earned runs Barlow has allowed came in an eight-day span in April. The righty has 24 strikeouts in 17.1 innings this season.
May 16 2023Barlow struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow's pitched 9.2 consecutive scoreless innings, and he hasn't allowed a baserunner in his last three outings. Saves remain hard to come by -- he hadn't converted one since April 29, though the Royals hadn't produced a save opportunity in that span. The right-hander's recent work should keep him in place as the primary closer. He's bounced back from a rough start to the year to get his ERA down to 3.86 with a 1.22 WHIP, 23:8 K:BB and five saves in 16 appearances (16.1 innings) this season.
May 12 2023Barlow (1-2) pitched a perfect inning and earned the win Thursday over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow kept the game tied at 3-3 in the top of the ninth inning, and Freddy Fermin delivered a walkoff single for the Royals a half-inning later. After some shaky work in mid-April, Barlow has strung together 7.2 scoreless innings over his last seven appearances. He has a 12:2 K:BB in that span, and the stretch has trimmed his ERA to 4.40 through 14.1 innings overall. He's 4-for-5 on save chances with a 20:8 K:BB this season.
Apr 30 2023Barlow gave up two hits and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Saturday to record his fourth save of the season in a 3-2 win over the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He was dialed in, firing 14 of his 15 pitches for strikes, and after giving up a pair of one-out singles he retired Byron Buxton and Trevor Larnach to secure Kansas City's seventh win of the year. A couple implosions have tainted Barlow's ratios, but he remains the preferred option in the ninth inning over Aroldis Chapman despite his 6.10 ERA, 1.74 WHIP and 13:7 K:BB through 10.1 innings.
Feb 22 2023Barlow is working on a two-seam fastball to add to his pitch mix, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow enters the year as the Royals' expected closer, though the offseason addition of Aroldis Chapman could create a committee. Rogers reports Barlow's two-seamer has been applauded by Royals hitters during camp, so the 30-year-old righty will likely continue to develop it as a fourth pitch to go with his four-seamer, slider and curveball. Barlow went 24-for-28 in saves with a 2.18 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 77:22 K:BB across 74.1 innings in 2022.
Jan 13 2023Barlow agreed to a one-year, $5.3 million contract with the Royals on Friday to avoid arbitration, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow has worked as Kansas City's closer for the past season and a half, and he was effective in 2022 with a 2.18 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 77:22 K:BB over 74.1 innings. He went 24-for-28 in save chances and should enter 2023 with a firm grip on the closer role, though it's possible new manager Matt Quatraro opts for a more committee-oriented approach.
Oct 3 2022Barlow (7-4) earned the win Monday over the Guardians. He struck out one in a perfect inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow kept the game tied at 2-2 in the ninth inning, and the Royals took the lead on a Drew Waters home run in the 10th. Over his last 12.1 innings, Barlow hasn't been charged with a run, yielding just four hits and six walks while striking out 15. The Royals' closer lowered his ERA to 2.18 and WHIP to 1.00, and he's added a 77:22 K:BB with 24 saves and six holds in 74.1 innings this year.
Sep 25 2022Barlow struck out one in a perfect ninth inning to earn the save in Sunday's win over the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow pitched in a non-save situation Friday against Seattle, but he picked up his third save in his last four appearances during Sunday's series finale. The right-hander has yet to allow a run over nine innings in September, converting four of five save chances while striking out 11 in 9.1 scoreless innings.
Sep 22 2022Barlow picked up the save in Wednesday's 5-2 victory over the Twins, allowing one hit while striking out one over one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow has kept the opponent off the board in nine of his last 10 appearances and has not allowed an extra-base hit over 7.1 innings during his last seven outings. The righty has been stellar at home with a 1.57 ERA over 40 innings compared to a 3.38 ERA over 29.1 innings away from Kansas City.
Sep 20 2022Barlow struck out three without allowing a baserunner over 1.2 innings to earn the save in Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jose Cuas began the eighth inning but plunked two of the three batters he faced. Barlow was able to escape the two-on, one-out situation unscathed and then added a perfect ninth inning for the save, his 22nd of the year. He's given up two hits and three walks while striking out eight over 6.1 scoreless innings in September, though he took one blown save for allowing an inherited runner to score. Barlow now has a 2.37 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 70:19 K:BB through 68.1 innings this year.
Sep 16 2022Barlow allowed two inherited runners to score on a hit and two walks while striking out two in two-thirds of an inning, taking a blown save Friday versus the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Dylan Coleman made a mess of things in the eighth inning and Barlow wasn't able to escape the jam. He walked in a run with the bases loaded and allowed an RBI single to J.D. Martinez. Barlow hadn't seen a save chance since Sept. 4, as the Royals went just 2-7 in their previous nine games. Barlow hasn't been charged with a run in September, covering 4.2 innings in five appearances this month. He owns a 2.43 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 67:19 K:BB through 66.2 innings this season. He's added 21 saves, four blown saves, six holds and a 6-4 record.
Sep 7 2022Barlow (6-4) pitched a perfect inning and earned the win Wednesday over the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow kept the deficit at one run in the top of the ninth inning, and he didn't issue a walk or record a strikeout. The Royals then rallied for two runs to make him the winning pitcher. Barlow has allowed five runs in 17.1 innings since the start of August, though he's kept runs off the board in his last three appearances. The 29-year-old right-hander has posted a 2.49 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 65:17 K:BB through 65 innings while adding 21 saves and six holds as the Royals' primary closer this year.
Sep 4 2022Barlow earned the save Sunday, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning of a 5-2 win in Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow had no trouble with the bottom three hitters in Detroit's lineup Sunday and retired the side in order on 11 pitches. It was his 21st save of the season and first since Aug. 22. The 29-year-old has been used sparingly recently as Sunday's outing was his first appearance in the last five days. For the season, he has a 2.57 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 63:16 K:BB in 63 innings and will continue to close out games for the Royals.
Aug 22 2022Barlow allowed one hit in a scoreless inning during Monday's win over the White Sox. He struck out one and earned a save. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jose Abreu punched a leadoff single to begin the ninth inning but Barlow quickly worked through it to finish off the victory. He's now converted 20 of his 23 save chances this season, including all four opportunities this month. The 29-year-old righty lowered his ERA to 2.15 with a 59:15 K:BB through 53 appearances. Barlow has given up just one run across 11 innings in August.
Aug 20 2022Barlow (5-4) allowed a hit and struck out two over two scoreless innings to earn the extra-inning win Friday over the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow's lone hit allowed came in the ninth inning, as Taylor Walls singled but was thrown out trying to advance to second. In the 10th, Barlow got more help from his defense, as initial runner Roman Quinn was caught attempting to steal third base. The tidy outing was Barlow's seventh scoreless one in August -- he's allowed just one run with a 12:2 K:BB through 10 innings this month. The Royals' closer has a 2.18 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 58:15 K:BB while adding 19 saves and five holds through 57.2 innings.
Aug 14 2022Barlow earned the save Sunday over the Dodgers, striking out three in 1.1 innings in a 4-0 victory. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow entered the game in the eighth inning with runners on first and third and two outs and fanned Max Muncy to end the threat. In the ninth, he struck out the first two batters he faced and got Chris Taylor to pop out in foul ground to end the game. It was his 19th save in 22 chances and third save this month. The 29-year-old has been very good in August, allowing one run in eight innings while striking out 10.
Aug 11 2022Barlow allowed an earned run on a hit and no walks while striking out two to earn the save Thursday against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow allowed a leadoff homer in the ninth inning, but he managed to maintain the remaining two-run lead to earn his 18th save of the season. He's now allowed at least one earned run in three of his last eight appearances while also taking two losses and blowing a save in that span. However, Barlow has been consistently excellent this season and still has a 2.32 ERA with a 53:15 K:BB across 52.1 frames.
Aug 1 2022Barlow allowed two hits and struck out two over two scoreless innings to earn the save in Monday's 2-1 win over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow needed this one -- he allowed seven runs (three earns) across two appearances spanning one inning versus the Yankees in the Royals' previous series. The right-hander was able to finish off the multi-inning save on 27 pitches (20 strikes). He's now 17-for-20 in save chances with a 2.36 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 48:13 K:BB across 49.2 innings this year. Barlow's closer role should be considered safe for now, especially if he can string together a few scoreless outings.
Jul 30 2022Barlow (4-4) allowed six runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk with one strikeout in two-thirds of an inning, taking the loss Friday versus the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow was brought in for a high-leverage assignment in the eighth inning, but he left it responsible for six of the Yankees' eight runs in a massive rally. With seven runs (three earned) allowed in his last two outings, Barlow is unlikely to be available for a save chance if one arises Saturday. He owns a 2.45 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 46:13 K:BB across 47.2 innings, though his 3.83 FIP is a career high, which suggests more regression may be on the way. If Barlow's struggles continue much longer, Josh Staumont or Taylor Clarke could be the next men up for closing duties.
Jul 28 2022Barlow (4-3) allowed a solo home run in one-third of an inning to take the loss in Thursday's 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Yankees had only four baserunners all game, but the last one was a home run trot for Aaron Judge when he took Barlow deep in the ninth inning. Entering Thursday, Barlow hadn't allowed a run in his last 10 innings. Since the game was tied when he began his appearance, he'll avoid a blown save -- the Royals' closer is 16-for-18 in save chances this year. He's added a 2.11 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 45:12 K:BB through 47 innings overall as a reliable part of an otherwise shaky bullpen group that ranks fourth-worst in the majors with a 4.53 ERA.
Jul 23 2022Barlow (4-2) earned the win Saturday versus the Rays. He allowed three hits in two scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow didn't strike out or walk a batter. He kept the game tied, and stayed in the game after the Royals pulled ahead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Barlow's scoreless streak is up to nine innings over his last eight appearances, and he's picked up four saves and two wins in that span. The closer has a 1.97 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 44:12 K:BB through 45.2 innings. This was his 12th appearance longer than one inning this season, so he's no stranger to doing a heavier workload than a traditional closer.
Jul 14 2022Barlow earned the save Thursday in Toronto, striking out one and allowing a hit in the ninth inning of a 3-1 victory. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After giving up a single to begin the ninth, Barlow recorded a strikeout and got Cavan Biggio to ground into a game-ending double play. He is now 16-for-18 in save opportunities and has converted his last eight chances. Over his last 12 appearances, the 29-year-old has a 1.55 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 14:2 K:BB in 11.2 innings.
Jul 13 2022Barlow struck out two without allowing a baserunner in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Wednesday against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow protected a three-run lead to earn his 15th save of the season. He's rebounded from a shaky stretch spanning late June and early July, as Wednesday's outing marked his fifth consecutive scoreless appearance -- during which he's picked up three saves while maintaining a 6:0 K:BB. Overall, Barlow has maintained a 2.16 ERA and 42:12 K:BB across 41.2 innings for the season.
Jul 11 2022Barlow tossed a perfect inning and earned a save in Game 1 of Monday's doubleheader against Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow needed just six pitches to roll through the Tigers and finish off the 3-1 victory. He's now converted six straight save chances since coughing up three runs and blowing an opportunity against the Angels on June 21. On the year, the 29-year-old is 14-of-16 in save chances with a 2.27 ERA over 39.2 frames.
Jul 9 2022Barlow (3-2) allowed a hit and a walk in a scoreless inning to earn the win Friday over the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow kept the game tied in the top of the ninth inning, and Michael Taylor delivered a walkoff single in the Royals' half of the frame. This was Barlow's first win since April 28, though he has continued to provide steady work as the Royals' main closer. The right-hander owns a 2.33 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 38:12 K:BB across 38.2 innings while going 13-for-15 in saves and adding four holds in 35 appearances.
Jul 6 2022Barlow earned a save against the Astros on Wednesday, pitching a scoreless inning during which he gave up one hit and struck out two batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow entered in the ninth inning with Kansas City up by three runs, and he was able to close out the contest by retiring three of the four batters he faced. The right-hander racked up five whiffs on just 18 pitches and threw a first-pitch strike to each hitter he faced. Barlow has converted 13 of 15 save opportunities on the season and holds a 2.39 ERA and 1.04 WHIP over 37.2 innings.
Jul 5 2022Barlow (2-2) took the loss Monday as the Royals fell 7-6 to the Astros, giving up one run on one hit in two-thirds of an inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The rest of Kansas City's bullpen had already blown a 6-3 lead when Barlow entered the game in the bottom of the ninth inning, but he completed the collapse by serving up a walkoff solo homer to Yordan Alvarez. It's only the fourth time in 15 appearances since the beginning of June that Barlow has been tagged for any runs, a stretch during which he's posted a 3.45 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 17:4 K:BB over 15.2 innings while converting seven of eight save chances.
Jul 3 2022Barlow struck out one in a perfect ninth inning to earn the save in Sunday's win over the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow has had plenty of high-leverage opportunities recently, and he's picked up saves in four of his last five outings dating back to June 24. The righty has a 2.25 ERA and 1.03 WHIP this season, both of which would be the best marks of his career. He earned a career-high 16 saves last year and is on pace to eclipse that mark in 2022 since he's converted 12 of 14 save chances to begin the year.
Jul 1 2022Barlow allowed one run and recorded one strikeout over 1.1 innings while recording a save over Detroit on Friday. He gave up one hit and walked one batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Eric Haase broke up the Royals' combined shutout with a sacrifice fly against Barlow in the ninth. Still, Barlow was able to convert his 11th save of the year and his sixth since the start of June. His season ERA is up to 2.31 with a 35:11 K:BB through 35 innings. Over his last 13 appearances, Barlow has coughed up five runs while striking out 16 batters.
Jun 29 2022Barlow struck out two and didn't allow a baserunner across a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Wednesday against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow had no issue protecting a one-run lead to lock down his 10th save of the season. He has turned in three consecutive scoreless appearances since blowing a save June 21, posting a 5:0 K:BB across 2.2 innings. Barlow has been excellent in the closer role for the Royals this season, maintaining a 2.14 ERA with a 34:10 K:BB across 33.2 innings.
Jun 25 2022Barlow allowed a hit and struck out two in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Friday's 3-1 win over the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow blew a save in his previous appearance, but he was back to being solid Friday. He's 4-for-5 in save chances while allowing four runs across 11 innings in June. The right-hander has a 2.25 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 31:10 K:BB in 32 innings overall while logging nine saves, four holds and two blown saves through 28 appearances. He continues to see more of the save chances than Josh Staumont, who hasn't closed out a game since May 17.
Jun 21 2022Barlow allowed three runs on two hits and a walk with one strikeout in one inning, taking a blown save in Tuesday's 12-11 extra-innings win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow needed to protect a three-run lead in the ninth inning, but he gave up a game-tying home run to Shohei Ohtani. This was just the second blown save in 10 chances for Barlow this season, and it's only the second time he's allowed multiple runs in an appearance. The 29-year-old's ERA ticked up to 2.32 with a 1.06 WHIP and 29:10 K:BB through 31 innings overall. He's given up four homers in 27 outings this year, matching his total from 71 appearances in 2021, but he's still the Royals' top option for saves.
Jun 19 2022Barlow picked up the save Saturday against Oakland, allowing no runs on no hits while striking out one and walking none across 1.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow entered the game in the eighth inning after Jose Cuas allowed a baserunner in a 1-0 game. Barlow picked up the final out in the eighth, then remained in for the bottom of the ninth. He needed only 12 pitches to pick up four outs and earn his eighth save of the year. The righty reliever has a 1.55 ERA this season and seems to have a strong lock on the closer role in Kansas City after converting his last seven save opportunities.
Jun 15 2022Barlow didn't allow a hit or walk while striking out two across 1.2 scoreless innings to earn the save Wednesday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow entered the game with a one-run lead and a runner on first base. However, he worked out of the jam quickly and required 25 pitches to get the final five outs of the game. Barlow now has seven saves on the season, converting each of the last three opportunities for the team. Barlow has held opponents scoreless in seven of his last 10 appearances, and he has maintained an excellent 1.63 ERA across 27.2 frames on the campaign.
Jun 9 2022Barlow earned the save against the Orioles on Thursday, pitching 1.1 scoreless innings and allowing two hits and one walk while striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow threw only 12 of 23 pitches for strikes in the outing, and he allowed a run-scoring double to the first batter he faced after entering with two outs in the eighth inning. However, the right-hander was able to settle down to notch his first save since May 26. The gap was a product of team play -- no other Kansas City pitcher earned a save in the two-week stretch, and Barlow didn't have any save opportunities during the time. He appears to have a good hold on the closer role, but that won't necessarily lead to many saves given the Royals' awful 19-37 season record.
May 26 2022Barlow earned the save against the Twins on Thursday, pitching two scoreless innings during which he allowed two hits and struck out two batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After the Royals took a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning, Minnesota responded by beginning the bottom of the frame with three straight singles. Barlow was brought in to minimize the damage, and he ended up keeping the Twins off the scoreboard entirely, striking out the first two batters he faced before inducing a groundout. The right-hander remained in the game for the ninth frame and allowed a pair of hits, but he again navigated around trouble to notch the save. This was Barlow's first save since May 15 and team-leading fifth on the campaign. Josh Staumont has three saves and may continue to cut into Barlow's ninth-inning opportunities, though the latter's 1.71 ERA and 1.05 WHIP are superior.
May 16 2022Barlow (2-1) took the loss Monday versus the White Sox. He allowed two runs (one earned) on a hit and a walk with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow kept the game tied in the ninth inning, but he allowed a two-run home run to Luis Robert in the 10th. The Royals were unable to bounce back from that, giving Barlow his first loss of the year. The right-hander has been strong as the Royals' closer with a 1.56 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 16:5 K:BB, four saves and three holds in 15 appearances. The homer he allowed Monday was the second he's given up this year after surrendering only four long balls in 71 outings in 2021.
May 15 2022Barlow struck out one in a perfect ninth inning to earn the save in Sunday's win over the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander picked up just one save during the first month of the season, but he has a 1.15 ERA this year and has been rewarded with saves in three of his last four outings. While Josh Staumont appeared to be the favorite for ninth-inning work in April, Barlow seems to have reclaimed the closing duties since the start of May, and he's converted four of five save chances in 2022.
May 13 2022Barlow saved Friday's 14-10 victory over the Rockies on Friday, striking out one in 1.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow earned his keep in the eighth inning when he induced a Brendan Rodgers flyout with the bases loaded and retired the side in order in the ninth to lock down his third save. Manager Mike Matheny notably had to pull co-closer Josh Staumont in the eighth after he loaded the bases and Barlow has received the last four Kansas City save chances. Barlow now owns a 1.23 ERA and 0.99 WHIP through 14.2 innings.
May 8 2022Barlow allowed two hits and no walks while striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save in Sunday's matinee win over the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow was charged with a blown save in his last outing, but he returned to form Sunday by picking up his second save of the season. The right-hander has split early-season closing duties with Josh Staumont, who also has two saves this year. Following Sunday's appearance, Barlow has posted a 1.46 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 12.1 innings.
Apr 20 2022Barlow earned a save against the Twins on Wednesday, pitching a scoreless inning during which he allowed one hit and did not walk or strike out any batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow was tasked with protecting a two-run ninth-inning lead and preserving the Royals' combined shutout. He allowed a one-out single but got Gary Sanchez to ground into a double play to pick up his first save. Josh Staumont looked like Kansas City's primary closer coming in to the contest, as he had notched a pair of saves in the previous four days, but he instead pitched the eighth inning Wednesday. Both Barlow and Staumont appear likely to get save opportunities moving forward.
Apr 16 2022Barlow logged 1.1 scoreless innings Saturday versus the Tigers. He allowed one hit and struck out two to earn a hold. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow entered the campaign as the Royals' primary closer, but he's yet to record a save in four appearances. He has a win and and a hold while allowing just one run, four hits, and a 6:1 K:BB across 4.2 innings. The right-hander is doing well, and the save chances should follow, but it appears manager Mike Matheny is opting to deploy Barlow at the most important moments in a game rather than just in the ninth inning. Josh Staumont pitched a scoreless inning to earn the first save by any Royals pitcher this season.
Apr 7 2022Barlow allowed zero runs on two hits across 2.0 innings and earned the victory Thursday against the Guardians. He struck out three and didn't walk a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow notched a 2.42 ERA with 14 holds and six saves across 74.1 innings last season and picked up right where he left off to start the 2022 campaign. The 29-year-old figures to be one of Kansas City's top options for high-leverage situations.
Mar 22 2022Barlow and the Royals agreed to terms on a one-year, $2.4 million deal Tuesday, avoiding arbitration, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow will increase his salary by nearly $2 million in his first year of arbitration eligibility. He emerged as the Royals' closer last season, saving 16 games while posting a 2.42 ERA and a 29.7 percent strikeout rate.
Sep 26 2021Barlow gave up a run on two hits and two walks while striking out three in one inning to earn the save in Sunday's 2-1 win over Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander's 16th save of the year wasn't all that sweet, but he was able to strike out Harold Castro with the bases loaded to preserve the lead. Barlow has rarely made mistakes on the mound with a 2.49 ERA across 72.1 innings. He's added a 1.22 WHIP and 89:28 K:BB while logging 16 saves and 14 holds in 69 appearances. He should end the year as the head of Kansas City's closer committee.
Sep 25 2021Barlow recorded his 15th save of the season in Friday's 3-1 win over the Tigers, working a perfect ninth inning without striking out a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old has converted seven straight chances since his last blown save Aug. 25. Barlow now sports a 2.40 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 86:26 K:BB through 71.1 innings with five wins and 14 holds in addition to his saves, and he's emerged as Kansas City's top bullpen arm this season.
Sep 21 2021Barlow recorded his 14th save of the season in the second game of Monday's doubleheader against Cleveland, giving up a run on one hit while striking out two in the seventh inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander entered the seventh with a three-run cushion, but he served up a solo shot to Bobby Bradley before closing out a 4-2 win. Barlow has converted eight of nine save chances since Aug. 18, posting a 1.35 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 14:4 K:BB through 13.1 innings over that stretch as the primary option in the Kansas City bullpen.
Sep 15 2021Barlow picked up the save Tuesday against Oakland after tossing a scoreless inning, walking two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow had a few command-related issues and aside from issuing multiple walks for the first time since July 8, he only tossed 10 of his 23 pitches for strikes. He found a way to get the job done, however, and he's now closed the door in each of his last five save chances. He has gone 13-for-19 in save opportunities this season but still owns a career-best 2.34 ERA through 66 appearances (69.1) innings.
Sep 13 2021Barlow allowed one hit and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning to record his 12th save of the year in a 5-3 win over the Twins on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow worked around a base hit by Max Kepler while striking out two batters to pick up the save. The 28-year-old has converted each of his last four save chances and 12-of-18 overall on the year. Barlow has let up just one run over his last 11 appearances and now owns a 2.37 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 84:24 K:BB over 68.1 innings.
Sep 6 2021Barlow gave up a hit and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Monday to record his 11th save of the season in a 3-2 win over the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He's emerged as the top option in the Royals' bullpen. In 22.2 innings since the All-Star break, Barlow has a 1.59 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 19:4 K:BB with seven saves, three wins and three holds, and no other right-hander has picked up a save for Kansas City since Greg Holland (shoulder) on July 23.
Aug 28 2021Barlow picked up the save Saturday against the Mariners after allowing one run on two hits while fanning one across one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow recorded his 10th save of the season but it wasn't an easy outing despite tossing 14 of his 18 pitches for strikes, as he gave up a two-out RBI double before closing things out on a groundout from Kyle Seager. Barlow hasn't been the most consistent reliever when it comes to nailing down save chances, though, going 10-for-16 on the season. That said, he still owns a career-best 2.57 ERA across 60 appearances this year.
Aug 27 2021Barlow saved Thursday's 6-4 win against the Mariners, throwing a 1-2-3 ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: One day after blowing the save against Houston, manager Mike Matheny once again turned to Barlow, who made quick work of the top of Seattle's order on just eight pitches. The 28-year-old-righty has endured a tumultuous August that's presented more positives than negatives, featuring two wins, three saves and a hold in addition to three blown saves. Barlow is the favorite to pitch the ninth until he falters or Greg Holland returns.
Aug 25 2021Barlow was tagged with a blown save Wednesday versus Houston, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing no runs on two hits and one walk while striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While the right-hander wasn't charged with any runs in the contest, he gave up a two-out, game-tying single in the eighth inning after being called upon to try to preserve a one-run lead. Barlow recovered to hold Houston scoreless in the ninth, but Kansas City lost the game in the 10th frame. Barlow should remain the most likely pitcher to pick up save opportunities for the Royals, as he has allowed only one earned run over his past nine appearances.
Aug 21 2021Barlow tossed a perfect ninth inning Friday to record his eighth save of the season in a 4-2 win over the Cubs. He didn't walk or strike out a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander needed only eight pitches (six strikes) to breeze through the top of the Cubs' order. Barlow has converted two straight save chances after blowing his prior two opportunities, and he remains the top closing option in the Royals' bullpen with a 2.55 ERA and 74:22 K:BB through 60 innings.
Aug 18 2021Barlow allowed three hits in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 3-2 win over Houston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander gave up three singles, but he can thank Andrew Benintendi for an outfield assist to record the final out of the game. Barlow's save was his first since July 26 -- in the eight outings in between, he logged three wins, two blown saves and a hold. The 28-year-old remains very much in the mix for save chances while Greg Holland (shoulder) is out. Barlow has a 2.64 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 72:22 K:BB with seven saves and 14 holds in 58 innings.
Aug 16 2021Barlow (5-3) allowed a run on two hits in 1.2 innings, earning the win Monday over Houston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow yielded a solo home run to Jason Castro in the ninth inning, but he was able to limit the damage there for a 7-6 Kansas City win. It was just the third homer Barlow has allowed in 57 innings this season. The right-hander has posted a strong 2.68 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 72:22 K:BB while adding six saves and 14 holds in a high-leverage role.
Aug 8 2021Barlow (4-3) earned the win Sunday versus St. Louis. He allowed two hits and struck out one without allowing a run in two-thirds of an inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow wasn't great in this appearance, but all three runs that crossed the plate on his watch were inherited runners from Greg Holland. When Kansas City regained the lead after a rain delay in the ninth inning, Barlow ended up in line for the win. Through 52.2 innings, he's posted a 2.73 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 69:21 K:BB while adding six saves, 14 holds and three blown saves. The right-hander is likely to continue seeing high-leverage work despite allowing multiple baserunners in three of his last five appearances.
Jul 29 2021Barlow (3-3) walked one and struck out two in a scoreless inning to earn the win Wednesday versus the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In his last five appearances, Barlow has collected two saves, two holds and a win as one of manager Mike Matheny's strongest high-leverage arms. Barlow worked the 10th inning Wednesday, keeping the game tied to allow Michael Taylor to deliver a walkoff single in the bottom of the frame. The 28-year-old right-hander owns a 2.70 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 65:21 K:BB with six saves and 13 holds across 50 innings.
Jul 27 2021Barlow allowed a run on two hits in two innings to earn the save in Monday's 4-3 win over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was called upon to pitch the eighth inning and remained in the game for the ninth. He allowed a ground-rule double to Yoan Moncada, who scored on Adam Engel's RBI single, but Barlow was able to induce a game-ending double play from Brian Goodwin to protect the lead. This was Barlow's second save in his last three appearances; he and Greg Holland seem to be manager Mike Matheny's favorites in Kansas City's closer committee for now. Barlow owns a 2.76 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 63:20 K:BB across 49 innings.
Jul 22 2021Barlow struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Wednesday to record his fifth save of the season in a 6-3 win over the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He needed only 11 pitches (seven strikes) to carve through the bottom of Milwaukee's order. Barlow has three of his saves in July, and while he's also been charged with two blown saves this month, both came in set-up situations and not in the ninth inning. The Royals will likely continue to mix and match in the closer spot, but at the moment Barlow seems to be the top option as only Greg Holland has also picked up a save this month.
Jul 8 2021Barlow allowed three runs on a hit and two walks with one strikeout in one inning, taking a blown save in Thursday's 7-4 loss to Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow pitched the eighth inning, but he wasn't able to get through it without giving up a three-run home run to Cleveland catcher Roberto Perez. This was Barlow's second blown save in as many outings, although he avoided taking the loss as he did Wednesday versus Cincinnati. The right-hander has a 2.95 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 60:19 K:BB through 42.2 innings this season. With both Barlow and Greg Holland struggling recently, Josh Staumont or Kyle Zimmer could see more high-leverage work in Kansas City's closing committee.
Jul 4 2021Barlow notched the save Saturday against Minnesota after tossing a scoreless ninth inning, giving up one hit and recording one strikeout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow had the task to defend a three-run lead in the top of the ninth inning and while he allowed Jorge Polanco to snatch a one-out single, he closed things out by striking out Nick Gordon and inducing Nelson Cruz to a groundout. Barlow has gone 4-for-5 in save chances this season and also has 11 holds, but perhaps the most important thing to note going forward is that he's been given the ball in each of the last two games where the Royals have needed a save. However, the Royals still seem to be deploying a committee approach to closing duties and that could continue to limit the upside of all the relievers involved.
Jul 3 2021Barlow struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Friday to record his third save of the season in a 7-4 win over the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: His last save came June 3 but Barlow has pitched effectively since then, posting a 2.53 ERA and 15:4 K:BB in 10.2 innings over his last 12 appearances. Greg Holland worked the eighth inning in this one and Kyle Zimmer the seventh as the Royals continue to deploy a closer committee that limits the fantasy upside of all relievers involved.
Jul 2 2021Barlow allowed a run on two hits and struck out two in one inning in Thursday's 15-1 loss to Boston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow remains an effective reliever for Kansas City. Since the start of June, he's posted a 2.31 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB in 11.2 innings. The right-hander has pitched well throughout the year with a 2.09 ERA, and his 2.01 FIP indicates that he's earned his solid stat line so far. The reliever has added 11 holds, two saves and a 2-2 record.
Jun 18 2021Barlow allowed a run on two hits and struck out one in one inning to earn a hold in Friday's 5-3 win over Boston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow gave up a solo home run to Rafael Devers in the eighth inning, but he was able to limit the damage after that. Through eight innings in June, Barlow has given up two runs, eight hits and three walks. He's posted a 2.06 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 49:15 K:BB across 35 innings overall. With two saves and 10 holds across 32 appearances, the right-hander is an essential part of Kansas City's late-inning plans, although Greg Holland is still more likely to see save chances.
Jun 12 2021Barlow (2-2) allowed a run on three hits and a walk and struck out one in 1.1 innings, taking the loss Friday versus Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander got through the eighth inning without trouble, but he was only able to get one out in the ninth before Elvis Andrus hit a walkoff single. Barlow hadn't allowed a run in his previous 12 innings across 11 outings before Friday's misstep. He's posted a 1.95 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 46:14 K:BB, two saves and nine holds across 32.1 innings. He'll likely continue to see high-leverage work out of the bullpen as one of Kansas City's most effective relievers.
Jun 3 2021Barlow pitched two hitless innings, allowing one walk and striking out a pair to secure the save in the win over the Twins on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow earned the multi-inning save as he kept the one-run lead intact. This was an important outing for the 28-year-old, as the closing situation in Kansas City is becoming more fluid and Barlow could see increased opportunities to finish games. He primarily serves as the setup man and boasts a 1.86 ERA and a 13.3 K/9. He has clearly been the most consistent reliever in the Royals' bullpen and is deserving of a share of the team's save situations.
May 30 2021Barlow pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing a walk with four strikeouts to earn a hold in Sunday's 6-3 win over Minnesota. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old got the last two outs of the seventh inning after Kyle Zimmer walked a pair of batters. Barlow then worked around a walk of his own in the eighth. The right-hander is up to nine holds in 25 appearances this season. He's added a 2.00 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 41:12 K:BB in 27 innings as Kansas City's primary setup man, although he could get a look in save situations should Greg Holland falter while Josh Staumont (knee) is out.
May 20 2021Barlow (2-1) allowed one walk and struck out two batters without allowing a run in two-thirds of an inning to earn the win Wednesday versus Milwaukee. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow notched the last two outs of the seventh inning and became the pitcher of record when Kansas City pulled ahead in the bottom of the seventh. The right-hander has found a decent amount of success in a high-leverage role with a 2.38 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 32:10 K:BB across 22.2 innings. While he hasn't been the primary closer, he's logged one save, seven holds and a blown save in 21 appearances.
May 16 2021Barlow pitched a scoreless eighth inning, allowing a hit and a walk with one strikeout to earn a hold in Saturday's 5-1 win over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander pitched the eighth inning and was able to work around a couple of baserunners for his seventh hold of the year. Carlos Santana hit a solo shot in the ninth inning, which took away a save opportunity for Josh Staumont. Barlow has been solid with a 2.57 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 29:9 K:BB in 21 innings. He also has a save, a blown save and a 1-1 record across 19 appearances in a high-leverage role.
May 11 2021Barlow (1-1) allowed a run on a hit, a walk and a hit-by-pitch with two strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning. He took the loss Tuesday versus Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow's lack of control Tuesday led to Detroit getting two runners aboard. Robbie Grossman then tagged a walkoff single to stick Barlow with his first loss of the season. The right-hander owns a 2.84 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 25:8 K:BB across 19 innings this season. He's picked up one save, five holds and a blown save while frequently serving in a high-leverage role.
May 5 2021Barlow earned a hold with 1.1 perfect innings in Wednesday's 5-4 loss to Cleveland. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow was able to retire Harold Ramirez via groundout to end Cleveland's threat in the sixth inning. The 28-year-old Barlow then retired the side on 11 pitches in the seventh for his fifth hold of the season. Jakob Junis was charged with a blown save for allowing the game-tying home run to Jose Ramirez in the eighth inning. Barlow has been relatively effective with a 2.60 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 22:7 K:BB across 17.1 innings this season. He should continue to see mostly high-leverage work.
Apr 24 2021Barlow pitched a perfect eighth inning with one strikeout to earn a hold in Saturday's 2-1 win over the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow relieved starter Brady Singer at the start of the eighth inning. The 28-year-old Barlow needed just 10 pitches to earn his third hold of the season. He has a 2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 15:4 K:BB across 13.1 innings this season. Josh Staumont worked the ninth inning for a save with Greg Holland and Wade Davis both in a rough patch early in the year. Barlow has picked up one save, one blown save and a win in 10 outings.
Apr 22 2021Barlow (1-0) allowed one run on three hits while striking out a batter over 1.2 innings. He was charged with a blown save but got the victory after the Royals picked up a ninth-inning walkoff win. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow was called upon in the eighth with the Royals clinging to a 7-6 lead but couldn't keep the Rays from scoring. He allowed a game-tying RBI double to Randy Arozarena in the eighth, then gave the Rays their lead back after surrendering a second RBI double to Joey Wendle in the ninth. Fortunately, the Royals were able to rally for two runs in the bottom half of the inning, handing Barlow a win. Overall, the 28-year-old has been fairly solid with a 2.92 ERA and 14:4 K:BB over 12.1 innings so far.
Apr 15 2021Barlow recorded the save in Thursday's win over the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old earned an impressive multi-inning save, allowing two hits and striking out one. The closer situation remains one worth monitoring in Kansas City as Barlow is now the fifth Royal to record a save in the young season.
Apr 5 2021Barlow logged two perfect innings to earn a hold in Monday's 3-0 win over Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow has yet to receive a save opportunity in 2021, but he's logged 3.2 scoreless innings across two outings, both holds. He's picked up four strikeouts as well. The 28-year-old right-hander appears set to see plenty of work in close games, but so far he's been limited to setup duty.
Mar 13 2021Barlow has recorded two saves while allowing no hits and one walk while striking out four over three scoreless innings to begin spring training. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow saw plenty of usage during the abbreviated 2020 campaign. He converted on both of his save chances and posted a 4.20 ERA and 39:9 K:BB over 30 innings while making 32 relief appearances. Following his strong showing over a limited sample in 2020, Barlow worked during the offseason to physically prepare to pitch well over a full season, Lynn Worthy of the Kansas City Star reports. The right-hander has performed well early in spring training, but he'll likely begin the regular season in a setup role with Greg Holland the favorite to serve as the closer early in the year.
Sep 13 2020Barlow gave up one run on two hits and zero walks while striking out one in one inning Saturday against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He came in for the eighth inning with the Royals up four and created a save situation that Greg Holland converted in the ninth inning. Barlow is clearly in the setup mix in Kansas City, but Holland, who has three saves in the last four days, is the top closing option.
Sep 8 2020Barlow allowed one run on two hits with two strikeouts and zero walks during the ninth inning to record the save Tuesday at Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old gave up a pair of one-out singles and was unable to keep the Indians off the board, but he was still able to notch the save since the Royals supplied him with a multi-run cushion. Barlow has two saves and three holds with a 2.86 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 28:7 K:BB through 22 innings this season and should continue operating in a high-leverage role.
Aug 31 2020Barlow (2-1) allowed two hits and struck out one in a scoreless inning to earn the win Monday versus Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow became the pitcher of record when the Royals scored twice to take the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Greg Holland then handled the ninth inning to earn the save. Through 19.2 innings, Barlow has a 1.37 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 24 strikeouts. He could be in the closer conversation with Ian Kennedy (calf) out -- the 27-year-old Barlow has one save and three holds in 20 appearances this season. Barlow has recorded 7.2 consecutive scoreless innings, dating back to Aug. 15.
Aug 9 2020Barlow did not allow a baserunner and struck out two to earn the save Sunday against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Trevor Rosenthal had pitched in each of the Royals' past two contests, meaning he was likely unavailable for Sunday's game. That gave Barlow the chance to step in and secure the save, and he did so on only 12 pitches. Barlow has been a strong member of the Royals' bullpen, striking out 12 and allowing only two earned runs across 10 innings this season. Even with that success, Rosenthal appears to be the top candidate to pitch in save situations for the time being.
Aug 2 2020Barlow (1-1) allowed two runs on two hits and no walks while striking out one over one inning as he was charged with the loss Sunday against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barlow hadn't allowed a run over 4.2 innings during his first five relief appearances this season, but he was charged with his first loss of 2020 after allowing two runs Sunday. The right-hander may receive the occasional win this season, but he's likely not in line to pitch in many high-leverage situations as the year progresses.
Mar 25 2020Barlow's spot in the big-league bullpen was safe when camp was suspended, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He allowed one earned run on four hits and one walk while striking out four in 5.1 innings this spring. Flanagan referred to Barlow and Tim Hill as the Royals' setup men behind closer Ian Kennedy, although that doesn't mean one of them would be next up if the closer's role was all of a sudden up for grabs.

Dec 7 2017Barlow signed a one-year deal with Kansas City on Thursday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.Barlow spent the 2017 season between Triple-A and Double-A as a member of the Dodgers' organization, posting a combined 3.29 ERA and 1.12 WHIP over 139.2 innings. The right-hander sported a 10.3 K/9 and 3.9 BB/9, but got hit pretty hard at the Triple-A level at Oklahoma City during seven starts. It remains to be seen if he will start the year in the big leagues or get a little more seasoning at the Triple-A level, but he's got strikeout potential and could be a viable player in the fantasy realm if he gets some time on the big-league mound.
