Jun 29 2025Alcantara did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing seven runs on 10 hits and no walks over six innings against the Diamondbacks. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara struggled mightily, giving up a season high in hits and tying his season worst with the seven earned runs. The outing was a harsh setback after a promising start to June, during which he recorded a 2.74 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over his first four starts (23.0 innings). For the season, the right-hander owns a 6.98 ERA and 1.48 WHIP across 80.0 innings in 16 starts. While Alcantara has frequently been mentioned as a trade candidate, his rough 2025 campaign has significantly diminished his market value.
Jun 22 2025Alcantara (4-8) earned the win Sunday over Atlanta, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a rough start to the season, Alcantara looks to be turning things around, posting a 2.74 ERA in his last four outings (23 innings). Overall, the 29-year-old Alcantara has posted a 6.69 ERA with a 1.46 WHIP and 59:34 K:BB across 15 starts (74 innings) this year after missing the 2024 campaign following Tommy John surgery. Alcantara is currently slated to face the Diamondbacks on the road his next time out.
Jun 16 2025Alcantara (3-8) took the loss in Monday's game against the Phillies. He allowed two runs on five hits and one walk over five innings with five strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Despite the loss, the Miami right-hander continued his recent string of solid performance in this 100-pitch outing. Alcantara held the Philadelphia lineup in check, as both runs he allowed came on solo homers -- one by Trea Turner in the first and the other by Max Kepler in the fourth. After opening the season with a ghastly 8.47 ERA through 51 innings, Alcantara has been significantly better over his last three starts, pitching to a 2.12 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 15:3 K:BB across 17 innings. He is currently slated to make his next start against Atlanta at home this weekend.
Jun 11 2025Alcantara (3-7) picked up the win in Tuesday's 3-2 victory over the Pirates, allowing three hits and a walk over six scoreless innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander only ran into trouble in the third inning after a leadoff double by Isiah Kiner-Falefa, but Alcantara escaped the jam and retired the last 10 batters he faced before leaving the mound. It was the best outing of the season for the 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner as he delivered his second straight quality start, and the win was his first since April 12. Alcantara will look to keep building momentum and chip away at his 7.14 ERA and 1.49 WHIP in his next start, which is scheduled to come at home early next week against the Phillies.
Jun 4 2025Alcantara did not factor in the decision during Tuesday's loss to Colorado. He allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out four over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While he couldn't beat the worst team in MLB, Alcantara still snapped an ugly run that lasted over a month. He worked through four shutout frames before the Rockies plated a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Alcantara delivered his first quality start since April 23. He gave up at least four runs in each of his six outings between those two starts, resulting in a brutal 10.08 ERA over 27.2 frames. After three straight outings with at least 100 pitches thrown, he's thrown 71 and 70 pitches in his last two appearances. Still searching for his first win since April 12, Alcantara is expected to make his next start in Pittsburgh.
May 28 2025Alcantara did not factor into the decision in Wednesday's 10-8 win over the Padres, allowing six runs on seven hits and four walks with no strikeouts over four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara unraveled in a disastrous fourth inning, allowing seven baserunners and five runs. He managed just one swinging strike on 71 pitches and failed to record a strikeout for the first time since 2019. The former Cy Young winner has now surrendered at least four runs in six consecutive starts. He owns an unsightly 8.47 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 40:29 K:BB across 51 innings and can't be relied upon even in a favorable home matchup against the Rockies next week.
May 23 2025Alcantara (2-7) allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out six over 5.1 innings to take the loss versus the Angels on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara continues to provide decent length, but he's given up at least four runs in five straight starts. He's lost his last seven outings, a span in which he's allowed seven of the eight home runs he's given up this year. This latest poor outing elevated Alcantara's ERA to 8.04 with a 1.57 WHIP and a 40:25 K:BB across 47 innings through 10 starts. It's not getting easier for the struggling starter, as Alcantara's next outing is projected to be at San Diego.
May 17 2025Alcantara (2-6) took the loss against the Rays on Saturday, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara opened with four scoreless innings before unraveling in the fifth, when he allowed six baserunners and four runs. He generated only nine whiffs on 101 pitches and has now surrendered four earned runs or more in four straight outings. On the season, he owns a 7.99 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 34:23 K:BB across 41.2 innings and lines up for a road matchup with the Angels next weekend.
May 11 2025Alcantara (2-5) yielded four runs on seven hits and three walks over 5.2 innings Sunday, striking out eight and taking a loss against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara looked solid for most of the outing, allowing only one run through the first five frames. He was cruising toward his first quality start since April 23 before serving up a three-run blast to Tim Elko. Alcantara has now allowed at least four runs in five of his last six outings and has taken five consecutive losses. He's sporting a brutal 8.10 ERA and 31:21 K:BB through 36.2 frames. Alcantara is projected to face the Rays at home next weekend.
May 5 2025Alcantara (2-4) yielded five runs on six hits and a walk over five innings Monday, striking out four and taking a loss against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara gave up a pair of two-run homers to Freddie Freeman and Shohei Ohtani in the third and fifth innings, respectively. Alcantara has made two straight starts against the Dodgers and was tagged with a combined 12 runs over 7.2 innings. He's now on a four-start losing streak and saw his ERA shoot up to 8.42 through 31 frames. Alcantara will look to end the skid in his next outing, which is lined up to be a road matchup with the White Sox this weekend.
Apr 30 2025Alcantara (2-3) took the loss Tuesday as the Marlins were routed 15-2 by the Dodgers, surrendering seven runs on seven hits and five walks over 2.2 innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a disastrous outing right from the jump for Alcantara, as Shohei Ohtani roped the first pitch he saw from the right-hander down the right-field line for a leadoff homer. Alcantara got the hook after 79 pitches (43 strikes), and it's the second time in his last three trips to the mound that he's been tagged for at least six runs. The Marlins' gamble on waiting to trade Alcantara until he showed he was fully recovered from Tommy John surgery hasn't paid off -- through six starts and 26 innings, he carries a brutal 8.31 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 19:17 K:BB. He'll be tough to trust in an active fantasy lineup until he begins to show signs of life, but things won't get any easier for Alcantara in his next outing, a scheduled rematch with the Dodgers early next week back in Miami.
Apr 18 2025Alcantara (2-1) took the loss against the Phillies on Friday. He allowed six runs on four hits and two walks while striking out one in two innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara put the Marlins on the back foot when he gave up a two-run homer to Bryce Harper in the first inning. Alcantara yielded four more runs in the second frame, and he did not return for the third inning after tossing 61 pitches (of which 40 were strikes) while generating only five whiffs. Friday's effort boosted Alcantara's ERA to 7.27 for the season, and he'll look to turn things around in his next start, tentatively slated for next week at home against the Reds.
Apr 12 2025Alcantara (2-0) got the win against the Nationals on Saturday, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks while striking out one batter across 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara went nine up, nine down through the first three innings, but he ran into trouble in the fourth when he allowed three runs after loading up the bases. He gave up a fourth run in the sixth inning on an Amed Rosario RBI single, and despite generating only three whiffs on 87 pitches (53 strikes), Alcantara was provided enough run support from the Marlins' offense to come away with his second win of the season. Alcantara has posted a 4.70 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 12:8 K:BB across 15.1 innings to begin the season, and his next start is tentatively slated for next week at home against the Diamondbacks.
Apr 10 2025The Marlins reinstated Alcantara (personal) from the paternity list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara will rejoin the Marlins for their home series with the Nationals this weekend after he was away from the team for the past three days following the birth of his child. He's slated to start Saturday's game in what will be his third outing of the season and his first since April 1, after his previously scheduled start last weekend against Atlanta was rained out.
Apr 9 2025Alcantara will be reinstated from the paternity list Friday and is penciled in to make his next start Saturday against the Nationals, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara was originally set to start Sunday against Atlanta, but that game got rained out, and the right-hander went on the paternity list the next day. He'll get another day to rest after he returns to the active roster Friday, which will make Saturday's outing his first appearance in 12 days. He'll be welcomed back by a Washington offense that currently ranks 10th in the majors with a .722 OPS.
Apr 7 2025The Marlins placed Alcantara on the paternity list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara had a scheduled start Sunday versus Atlanta rained out and he will now likely miss the full three-game set against the Mets that begins Monday before rejoining the rotation Friday versus the Nationals. Valente Bellozo was called up from Triple-A Jacksonville to start Monday in New York.
Apr 6 2025Alcantara won't start Monday against the Mets, as he's set to be placed on the paternity list, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander appeared set to take the hill Monday in Queens after his scheduled start Sunday at Atlanta was postponed due to inclement weather, but he'll instead step away from the team for a few days to be with his growing family. Alcantara should be back with the Marlins to pitch Friday versus the Nationals at home.
Apr 1 2025Alcantara (1-0) allowed two runs on three hits over five innings Tuesday, striking out four and earning a win over the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara coughed up a solo shot to Brandon Nimmo in the second inning and an RBI single to Francisco Lindor in the third. Alcantara tossed 91 pitches against the Pirates on Opening Day but was limited to just 70 pitches (43 strikes) Tuesday against the Mets. Through two starts, he's produced a 3.72 ERA with an 11:4 K:BB over 9.2 innings. Alcantara's next start is projected to be a rematch with the Mets in New York next week.
Mar 27 2025Alcantara didn't factor into the decision in Thursday's game against the Pirates. He allowed two runs on two hits and four walks while striking out seven across 4.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara was in total control through the first four innings of Opening Day, including the third frame when he followed up a leadoff walk with three consecutive strikeouts. The right-hander started the fifth inning strong with two straight punchouts, but he allowed the next three hitters to reach before giving up a two-run single to Bryan Reynolds to end his day. Despite the underwhelming finish, it was an encouraging season debut as Alcantara made his first MLB appearance since undergoing Tommy John surgery late in 2023. He understandably showed some signs of rust but still generated 16 swinging strikes on 91 pitches.
Mar 21 2025Alcantara is expected to build up to 80-to-90 pitches while pitching in a minor-league game Friday, Chuck King of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It should be Alcantara's last outing of the spring before he takes mound for the Marlins on Opening Day. The right-hander has been impressive in camp in his return from Tommy John surgery, posting a 0.00 ERA and 10:3 K:BB over 12.1 Grapefruit League innings, and if he shows he's back to something close to his Cy Young form, it might serve to increase the trade package Miami can get for him this summer.
Mar 11 2025Alcantara gave up two unearned runs on four hits over 2.2 innings in Monday's split-squad game against the Nationals. He struck out three without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander tossed 57 pitches (33 strikes) as he continues building up ahead of an Opening Day assignment for the Marlins. Alcantara missed the entire 2024 campaign while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but he worked over 180 innings each of the prior three seasons, and manager Clayton McCullough indicated over the weekend that Miami's ace would not face a hard innings limit in 2025. Alcantara hasn't done anything this spring to suggest he needs one, posting a 0.00 ERA and 8:2 K:BB over 8.1 innings.
Mar 9 2025Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said Sunday on the Marlins Radio Network that "no innings limit" has been set for Alcantara this season. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The skipper backed up comments from Alcantara himself, who said Saturday that the team hadn't informed him of any innings restrictions. That contradicts an earlier report from Jeff Passan of ESPN.com. The right-hander missed all of last season while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, but he had a relatively normal offseason and is poised to start Opening Day for the Marlins.
Mar 8 2025Alcantara said Saturday that the team hasn't told him he will be under any inning restrictions this season, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara's comments directly contradict a report from Jeff Passan of ESPN.com that states the 29-year-old righty will be on an innings limit early in the year. Amid all the uncertainty, the truth is more likely to come from the man himself, though he doesn't have full say over his deployment. It would make some sense for Alcantara to gradually build up his workload during the season after missing all of 2024 following Tommy John surgery.
Mar 6 2025Alcantara will be on an innings limit, particularly early in the season, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara made Passan's list of the "10 players scouts are buzzing about" this spring, with the right-hander throwing in the upper 90s and generally looking like his old self following 2023 Tommy John surgery. Craig Mish of the Miami Herald recently suggested Alcantara may not have any set restrictions this season; however, it now sounds like the team will take measures to limit Alcantara early on, in part to entice contenders, who would then in theory have the 29-year-old fully available in October if they were to acquire him via trade.
Mar 1 2025Alcantara threw two pitches that reached 100 mph during Friday's Grapefruit League start against Atlanta, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner tossed 30 pitches in total over two scoreless innings, giving up two singles and striking out three without walking a batter. "Everything feels good with my arm, [it] was good out there. I just want to show people that I'm healthy and I can throw hard," Alcantara said after the outing. The 29-year-old righty hasn't pitched in an MLB game since September 2023, missing all of 2024 due to Tommy John surgery, but he appears fully recovered and on track to take the bump for the Marlins on Opening Day. The Tigers' Tarik Skubal, who won the AL Cy Young in 2024, is the only other starting pitcher to light up a radar gun for triple digits so far this spring.
Feb 23 2025Alcantara allowed one hit and struck out one in a scoreless inning during Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander touched 99 mph and threw 13 of 17 pitches for strikes in his first game action since undergoing Tommy John surgery in October of 2023. Alcantara has already been announced as Miami's Opening Day starter for the March 27 game against the Pirates. Craig Mish of the Miami Herald doesn't expect the 29-year-old to have any pitching restrictions this season despite it being his first year back from the procedure.
Feb 13 2025Alcantara will be the Marlins' Opening Day starter on March 27 versus the Pirates, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He'll likely be opposed by Paul Skenes, although the Pirates have not officially announced their Opening Day starter yet. The Marlins are sure to limit Alcantara's workload to some degree in his first season back from Tommy John surgery, but he's more than 16 months removed from the operation and was the only real option to take the ball Opening Day.
Feb 12 2025Alcantara (elbow) threw his first live batting practice session of spring training Wednesday, Kevin Barral of FishonFirst.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Marlins' willingness to let Alcantara face off against hitters in the first week of spring training suggests that he experienced no setbacks over the offseason while he completed the final stages of his recovery from his Oct. 6, 2023 Tommy John surgery. Miami could still elect to slow play Alcantara's integration into the Grapefruit League pitching schedule as a matter of caution, but the 2022 National League Cy Young Award winner looks well on his way to being ready to go for Opening Day. Alcantara could struggle to immediately recapture his pre-surgery velocity and command, though the fact that his arm operation was more than 16 months ago should help his chances of regaining form more quickly than if he were attempting to return on a shorter recovery timeframe.
Feb 5 2025Alcantara (elbow) is expected to be ready to take the mound Opening Day, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old right-hander didn't pitch at all in 2024 after undergoing Tommy John surgery the prior October, but he was facing live hitters last September and should have no restrictions when spring training begins. Alcantara won the NL Cy Young Award in 2022 on the strength of a 2.28 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 207:50 K:BB over 228.2 innings, but he'll carry plenty of risk as a fantasy asset this season until he can demonstrate he's fully recovered from the surgery and has something close to his pre-injury command and control.
Sep 17 2024Alcantara (elbow) threw live batting practice at LoanDepot Park on Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara faced batters for the first time since he underwent Tommy John surgery Oct. 6, 2023. The right-hander's rehab from the operation has moved along swimmingly thus far, and he should be ready to roll for the start of spring training.
Sep 3 2024Alcantara (elbow) threw a 40-pitch up-and-down bullpen session Saturday, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara began throwing off a mound July 24 and has steadily increased the volume and intensity of his bullpen sessions. While the Marlins aren't entertaining the possibility of Alcantara pitching in 2024, he could resume facing hitters at some point in September and looks on track to enter spring training with few restrictions, if any. Alcantara has been on the shelf all season while recovering from Oct. 6 Tommy John surgery.
Aug 11 2024Alcantara (elbow) said he threw his sixth bullpen session of the season Saturday while throwing at about 75 percent intensity, Isaac Azout of FishOnFirst.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara won't be activated from the 60-day injured list this season, but the right-hander looks on pace to enter spring training with few restrictions, if any, as he draws closer to the finish line of his recovery from Oct. 6, 2023 Tommy John surgery. The right-hander will continue to gradually increase the intensity and volume of his bullpen sessions in the coming weeks, and he could be cleared to resume facing hitters in batting practice before the Marlins' season comes to an end Sept. 29.
Jul 26 2024Alcantara (elbow) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Saturday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara threw off a mound Wednesday for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last October and will toss another bullpen Saturday. The right-hander remains on schedule for a full recovery by spring training 2025.
Jul 23 2024Alcantara (elbow) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara began a throwing program back in March, but this will be his first time throwing off a mound since his October 2023 Tommy John surgery. He won't be back this season, but the Marlins anticipate the former Cy Young winner to be ready to roll heading into 2025.
May 7 2024Alcantara (elbow) was spotted playing catch in Oakland on Saturday during the Marlins' series versus the Athletics, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara has been able to play catch for about two months now and is presumably increasing the distance and frequency of his throwing, but the Marlins haven't indicated when he might be ready to toss bullpen sessions. Regardless, after he underwent Tommy John surgery on October 6, 2023, the Marlins aren't counting on Alcantara contributing at any point in 2024. The Marlins' focus remains on getting the 2022 National League Cy Young Award winner back to 100 percent for the start of spring training next year.
Mar 9 2024Alcantara (elbow) played catch Saturday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara isn't a candidate to return during the 2024 season, but it is encouraging to see him throwing again just five months removed from his Tommy John procedure. The 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner will spend the year slowly rehabbing his elbow with the goal of returning for the start of the 2025 campaign.
Feb 24 2024The Marlins placed Alcantara on the 60-day injured list Saturday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara underwent Tommy John surgery in October and is in line to miss the entire 2024 campaign. He will surrender his roster spot as he moves to the IL, creating room for Tim Anderson, who officially signed with Miami on Saturday.
Oct 6 2023Alcantara underwent Tommy John surgery Friday to repair the UCL in his right elbow, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara landed on the injured list in early September and was shut down from his rehab assignment after spraining his UCL on Sept. 22. Now having undergone surgery to address the issue, the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner will almost certainly miss the entire 2024 season.
Sep 23 2023Alcantara (elbow/forearm) acknowledged Saturday that he will not pitch again this year, Jordan McPherson and Andre Fernandez of the Miami Herald report. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara threw four scoreless innings in a promising rehab start Thursday with Triple-A Jacksonville, but his elbow and forearm were barking again in the aftermath and he's now officially been shut down with what's being called a right UCL sprain. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner said it has yet to be determined whether the injury will require a surgical repair. He finishes with a 7-12 record, 4.14 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 151:48 K:BB in 28 starts covering 184.2 innings.
Sep 22 2023Alcantara felt renewed forearm tightness following his rehab start Thursday with Triple-A Jacksonville, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara is headed to Miami to be evaluated this weekend by the Marlins' medical staff, and it's a safe bet that he is not going to be able to return before the end of the regular season. He tallied four strikeouts over four scoreless innings Thursday with Jacksonville while touching 98.3 mph with his fastball, but the right UCL sprain that sent him to the injured list Sept. 6 is still clearly an issue.
Sep 21 2023Alcantara (forearm) allowed one hit and no walks while striking out four across four scoreless innings in a rehab outing with Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara put up an impressive stat line, but more importantly, he managed to throw 51 pitches while mixing in all of his offerings. He also topped out at 98.3 mph. The next step for Alcantara is unclear, though he could take one turn through the rotation before the regular season comes to a close.
Sep 18 2023Alcantara (forearm) threw a 20-pitch bullpen session Monday, his second since resuming his throwing program last week, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Per Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald, Alcantara made full use of his arsenal and indicated afterward the session that he was feeling good. The reigning National League Cy Young Award winner remains hopeful to pitch again before the regular season ends, but he'll still need to face hitters in live batting practice or a simulated game before the Marlins are likely comfortable activating him from the 15-day injured list.
Sep 13 2023Alcantara (forearm/elbow) played catch Wednesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was his first time throwing a baseball since he landed on the 15-day injured list last Wednesday with what has since been diagnosed as a right UCL sprain. Alcantara seems doubtful to be activated when first eligible next Tuesday, but the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner could potentially return before the end of September if all goes well with his side work. Miami currently sits 1.5 games back of the Diamondbacks for the third NL Wild Card spot.
Sep 11 2023Alcantara (forearm) is rehabbing with the team in Milwaukee but has yet to resume throwing, Jordan McPherson of The Miami Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday due to a right forearm flexor strain. A timeline for the right-hander's return could start to come into focus once he starts to ramp up baseball activities.
Sep 6 2023Alcantara was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday, retroactive to Sept. 4, with right forearm flexor strain, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to Craig Mish of the Miami Herald, Alcantara informed the Marlins after his start against the Nationals on Sunday that he was experiencing some discomfort in his pitching arm. He is undergoing tests, but the Marlins have opted to go ahead and make an IL move. Alcantara will be eligible to return Sept. 19, but the results of the exams will offer a clearer picture as to when he might make it back.
Sep 3 2023Alcantara (7-12) earned the win Sunday, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks over eight innings against the Nationals. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Nationals did most of their damage against Alcantara with a three-run fifth inning, though the right-hander would battle his way through eight innings to earn his seventh win. It's been a bit of a struggle for Alcantara of late, who's now allowed 15 runs in his last four starts (26.1 innings). Overall, he sports a 4.14 ERA with a 1.21 WHIP and 151:48 K:BB across 28 starts (184.2 innings) this season. Alcantara is currently in line for a road matchup with the Phillies in his next outing.
Aug 29 2023Alcantara (6-12) took the loss Tuesday, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks over 5.2 innings against the Rays. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara held Tampa Bay to just one run through five innings, but the floodgates opened in the sixth when three hits and a hit-by-pitch resulted in three runs and Alcantara's removal from the game. The reigning National League Cy Young Award winner seemed to be regaining his form in the second half but his last three starts have left a lot to be desired with a 5.40 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and a pedestrian 13:6 K:BB across 18.1 innings during that three-game stretch.
Aug 23 2023Alcantara (6-11) took the loss Wednesday, giving up four runs on seven hits and three walks over 6.2 innings as the Marlins fell 4-0 to the Padres. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Last year's NL Cy Young Award winner didn't have his best stuff, managing only eight swinging strikes among his 105 pitches, but Alcantara was also backed by an offense that only managed four hits off San Diego pitching. Despite the stumble, the right-hander still sports a 3.02 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 50:11 K:BB through 56.2 innings since the All-Star break. He'll look to get back in the win column in his next start, likely to come at home next week against the Rays.
Aug 18 2023Alcantara (6-10) allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out six over six innings to earn the win Friday over the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara was tagged for three home runs, but they were all solo shots, and the Marlins responded with five homers of their own. Alcantara has gone at least six innings in eight straight starts, posting six quality starts and a 3-3 record in that span. The Miami ace is at a 4.11 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 141:41 K:BB through 165.1 innings over 25 starts this season. He's projected for a road outing in San Diego next week.
Aug 13 2023Alcantara (5-10) earned the win Saturday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over nine innings against the Yankees while striking out 10. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara was dominant Saturday, not allowing a runner to reach second base until the top of the seventh after the right-hander was called for a balk, advancing Billy McKinney from first. The reigning National League Cy Young Award winner then allowed one run to come across in the frame before continuing his dominance over the final two innings to log his third complete game of the season. Alcantara also racked up a season-high 10 strikeouts in the contest and has now allowed one run or fewer in three of his last four starts.
Aug 6 2023Alcantara (4-10) allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits and struck out seven without walking a batter over six innings, taking the loss Sunday versus the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara had allowed just one run over his previous two starts combined, but the Rangers were able to tag him for a season-high three home runs. The right-hander didn't get any help from his offense, which managed just six hits and two walks Sunday. Alcantara is now at a 4.28 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 125:38 K:BB through 149.1 innings through 23 starts this season. He's projected for a home start versus the Yankees his next time out.
Aug 1 2023Alcantara did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing four hits and a walk over eight scoreless innings against Philadelphia. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara is finally starting to look like he did in his 2022 Cy Young campaign. He's now thrown 17 innings over his last two starts, allowing just one run on nine hits in that span. However, Alcantara was stuck with a no-decision Tuesday as the Phillies rallied to score three against David Robertson in the ninth inning. The 27-year-old Alcantara's pitched to a 2.02 ERA over his last five outings, lowering his ERA to 4.21 on the season with a 1.21 WHIP and 118:38 K:BB across 22 starts (143.1 innings). He's currently lined up for a tough road matchup with the Rangers this weekend.
Jul 27 2023Alcantara (4-9) earned the win Wednesday, allowing one run on five hits and one walk over nine innings against the Rays. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara needed only 14 pitches to get through the first two innings before allowing a leadoff double to Josh Lowe in the third, which would lead to one run coming across for the Rays. The right-hander would allow just three singles and a walk from that point on en route to recording his second complete game of the season. It's been a disappointing year for Alcantara, though he's currently enjoying his best month of the season so far, posting a 3.31 ERA in July to go along with a 30:6 K:BB.
Jul 19 2023Alcantara (3-9) took the loss Wednesday, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks over six innings against the Cardinals. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Cardinals tagged Alcantara for four runs in the first inning, highlighted by a Nolan Gorman three-run homer. Alcantara was able to settle down and hold St. Louis off the board over his final five frames, but Miami couldn't overcome the early deficit. The 27-year-old right-hander had shown some improvement recently, delivering quality starts in three of his previous four outings. Still, it's been a disappointing campaign overall for Alcantara. His ERA is up to 4.70 with a 1.28 WHIP and 106:36 K:BB through 20 starts (126.1 innings). Alcantara's currently slated for another tough matchup against the Rays in his next start.
Jul 15 2023Alcantara (3-8) took the loss Friday, giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits and a walk over six innings as the Marlins were downed 5-2 by the Orioles. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For the first time this season, Alcantara delivered back-to-back quality starts. but Miami couldn't provide him with enough run support to get the right-hander into the win column. The team continues to keep a close eye on Alcantara's workload -- it's been nearly two months since he tossed 100 or more pitches in a start, but that hasn't resulted in significantly better numbers as he has a 4.26 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 45:17 K:BB in 63.1 innings in those 10 outings. His next trip to the mound lines up for a series in St. Louis next week.
Jul 8 2023Alcantara did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing one run on eight hits over 6.2 innings against the Phillies. He struck out five and did not record a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara allowed at least one home run for a second straight game and the 10th time over 18 appearances this season. However, that was the only damage done against the right-hander Friday, and he was in line for the win until A.J. Puk blew a two-run lead in the top of the ninth. It's certainly been a disappointing 2023 for the reigning NL Cy Young winner, as he currently boasts a career-worst 4.72 ERA and has a 7.4 K/9 -- his worst mark since 2019. Despite his struggles, Alcantara remains the ace of Miami's rotation.
Jul 2 2023Alcantara (3-7) took the loss Sunday, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks over five innings against Atlanta. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara lasted just five frames Sunday, his shortest start since May 2. He surrendered multiple homers for the first time all season, as Orlando Arcia tagged him for a solo home run in the second inning and Ozzie Albies swatted a two-run shot in the fifth. The outing continued a rough patch for Alcantara, marking the fifth time he's allowed at least four runs across his past seven appearances. Over that stretch, Alcantara owns a 5.04 ERA and a 32:13 K:BB during 44.2 innings.
Jun 28 2023Alcantara (3-6) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing one run on six hits and two walks over seven innings in a 10-1 victory over the Red Sox. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Marlins gave their ace a three-run lead before he stepped on the mound at Fenway, and Alcantara responded with one of his best performances of the season. The right-hander fired 65 of 95 pitches for strikes en route to his sixth quality start in 16 outings and his first win since May 24. Alcantara will try to build on that success in his next start, likely to come this weekend in Atlanta.
Jun 22 2023Alcantara (2-6) took the loss Wednesday, allowing five runs on 10 hits with two walks over seven innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Blue Jays jumped all over Alcantara in the second inning, racking up five runs on six hits -- four of which came in the first four at-bats. The right-hander wouldn't allow another run to come across over the next five innings, but the damage had already been done, leaving the reigning National League Cy Young winner with his sixth loss of the season. Alcantara has now allowed five runs in back-to-back starts and in three of his four starts this month as his nightmare season continues.
Jun 17 2023Alcantara did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing five runs on 10 hits over 5.1 innings against Washington. He struck out one and did not issue a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara gave up at least five runs for the fourth time this year and recorded a season-low one strikeout. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner has struggled mightily to start 2023 and holds a career-worst 4.97 ERA across 14 starts (88.2 innings). Not only is the right-hander giving up runs at an alarming rate, he's also not getting as many strikeouts as usual, posting just 23 over his last 37.1 innings (5.5 K/9). Things don't get any easier for Miami's ace, whose next start is scheduled as part of a three-game series versus the Blue Jays.
Jun 11 2023Alcantara did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over seven innings against the White Sox. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara held the White Sox lineup in check for most of the day and managed to pitch his way out of a few jams, allowing just one run on a leadoff homer to Andrew Vaughn in the fourth inning. The right-hander produced 13 of his outs on groundballs for the second straight start while lowering his ERA from 5.07 to 4.75 on the season, though he was still unable to nab his third victory. It's been a tough road for the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner, who's recorded just one win since April 14.
Jun 4 2023Alcantara did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing five runs on six hits over seven innings against the Athletics. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara was excellent Sunday, apart from the third inning, when he allowed five runs on four hits. More importantly, Alcantara didn't issue a walk after allowing three or more free passes in his previous three outings. The 27-year-old right-hander has yet to return to his 2022 form, posting a 5.07 with a 1.22 WHIP and 67:25 K:BB in 12 starts (76.1 innings) this season.
May 30 2023Alcantara did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing four runs on five hits and five walks over 6.1 innings against the Padres. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara's command eluded him again Tuesday, as he's now issued 13 walks over his last four starts (25.2 innings). It's been a tough year overall for Alcantara, following up on his Cy Young-winning campaign. He's 2-5 with a 4.93 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 60:25 K:BB through 11 starts (69.1 innings) this season. Alcantara currently lines up for a friendlier matchup with the A's on Sunday, where he'll look to get his season on track.
May 24 2023Alcantara (2-5) earned the win Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks over six innings against the Rockies. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara gave up a run and two extra-base hits on the first six pitches of his night. He shut down the Rockies from there, only allowing another run on an Elias Diaz solo shot in the sixth. Alcantara has failed to live up to his phenomenal 2022 campaign. He has allowed at least two runs in nine of his 10 starts and has a career-high 4.86 ERA. His FIP sits at 3.58, implying he will improve, but may not reach the dominance he had last season.
May 20 2023Alcantara (1-5) took the loss Friday, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks over 5.2 innings against the Giants. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara has now coughed up 10 runs over his last two starts, an unfortunate development after he gave up just two runs over 8.1 innings May 7 against the Cubs. The right-hander has given up multiple runs in eight of his nine starts this year and has an unimpressive 5.05 ERA. The 27-year-old is tentatively slated to face the Rockies on the road in his next start.
May 14 2023Alcantara (1-4) took the loss Saturday, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks over 7.2 innings during a 6-5 loss to the Reds. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara served up a three-run home run to Jake Fraley in the fifth, but he was still in line for the win until he struggled in the eighth. The reigning NL Cy Young winner was pulled after surrendering the lead and was charged with three total runs in the frame. Alcantara continues to have a long leash, but he's struggled to shut down teams late in games like he did last year. He's allowed multiple runs in seven of his first eight starts and sports a 4.91 ERA over 51.1 innings. His 1.21 WHIP and 49:14 K:BB suggest the ERA will drop eventually, but it's clear he's working through some adjustments.
May 8 2023Alcantara allowed two runs on nine hits and did not walk a batter over 8.1 innings Sunday against the Cubs. He struck out nine and did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara had one of his vintage performances Sunday afternoon but wasn't able to quite close the door on the Cubs. Marlins manager Skip Schumaker opted to send Alcantara back to the mound for the ninth, sitting at 100 pitches, after he threw a combined 12 pitches between the seventh and eighth innings. He started by striking out Dansby Swanson, but then a single, a double and another single would drive in two runs to even the game at 2-2. Still, it was an overall dominant effort from the 27-year-old, but he's still in search of his first win since he threw a complete-game shutout April 4. Alcantara will now take a 4.53 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 40:12 K:BB into his next projected start against the Reds.
May 2 2023Alcantara (1-3) took the loss Tuesday, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks over five innings against Atlanta. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara struggled Tuesday though his final line certainly could've been worse, as he managed to strand nine baserunners over five high-stress innings. Overall, it's been a disappointing start to the year for Alcantara following his Cy Young campaign. His ERA is up to 5.09 with a 1.25 WHIP and 31:12 K:BB through six starts (35.1 innings). The 27-year-old Alcantara will look to get back on track in his next outing, tentatively lined up for this weekend against the Cubs.
Apr 4 2023Alcantara (1-0) collected the win Tuesday, allowing three hits and a walk over nine shutout innings while striking out five in a 1-0 victory over Minnesota. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner retired the first 11 batters he faced before Trevor Larnach reached on an infield single in the fourth inning, and no Minnesota baserunner even got to second base on the night in a masterful performance by Alcantara. The right-hander generated 15 swinging strikes among his 100 pitches (68 strikes), and he appears to have rediscovered last year's form quickly after a shaky effort Opening Day. Alcantara's next start should come early next week in Philadelphia.
Mar 30 2023Alcantara did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing three runs on three hits and four walks over 5.2 innings against the Mets. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This goes down as a disappointment for those who drafted Alcantara, but he had 14 swinging strikes on 96 pitches which suggests the strikeouts should tick back up. Alcantara has never been the most dominant arm in terms of whiffs, but he's been over eight strikeouts per nine over the past three seasons. The right-hander excels by using his changeup and sinker to keep the ball on the ground while rarely handing out free passes (Thursday notwithstanding).
Mar 18 2023Alcantara allowed just two hits in 5.2 scoreless innings Saturday in a Grapefruit League outing against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara walked two and struck out five in an impressive outing for the 2022 Cy Young winner, as he made his return from the WBC. The right-hander now has a 0.87 ERA during his time in the Grapefruit League, and he has shown no signs that he won't be a strong fantasy option again in 2023. He'll likely make one more spring start before an Opening Day outing March 30 against the Mets.
Nov 16 2022Alcantara was named the unanimous winner of the National League Cy Young Award on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old finished 2022 with a 2.28 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 207:50 K:BB across 228.2 innings and secured all 30 first-place votes. Alcantara led MLB in pitching bWAR (8.0) and innings pitched, and he was also second in the NL in ERA, sixth in WHIP and fourth in strikeouts. The right-hander inked a five-year, $56 million extension with the Marlins in November 2021, so he's not likely to be going elsewhere anytime soon.
Oct 1 2022Alcantara won't start Wednesday's regular-season finale against Atlanta, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara capped off his dominant season Friday in Milwaukee, allowing a run on five hits and no walks while striking out eight in eight innings to take an unlucky loss. While he would have lined up to start Wednesday on normal rest, manager Don Mattingly said Saturday that the right-hander won't pitch again in 2022 in order to give him extra rest ahead of the offseason. Alcantara had a career-best season during the 2022 campaign, posting a 2.28 ERA, 207:50 K:BB and 0.98 WHIP in 228.2 innings over 32 starts.
Sep 25 2022Alcantara (14-8) earned the win Saturday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk over eight innings against the Nationals. He struck out 11. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara's only blemish came from a solo homer from first baseman Joey Meneses to open the scoring with two outs in the first inning. In his last 11 games, the righty has posted a seemingly uneventful 3.30 ERA over 76.1 innings but allowed four runs or more four times and one run or fewer five times during that stretch. The 27-year-old has been particularly stifling at home, with a 9-4 record and 1.64 ERA over 121 innings compared to a 5-4 record and 3.16 ERA over 99.2 innings on the road.
Sep 18 2022Alcantara (13-8) allowed one run on seven hits and a walk in a complete-game win over Washington on Sunday. He struck out seven batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara continued his push for the NL Cy Young with yet another terrific performance Sunday. The lone run against him came during the fourth inning on Luis Garcia's double-play groundout. The 27-year-old righty lowered his ERA to 2.37 across a league-leading 212.2 innings. Alcantara has thrown three complete games since the start of August, posting a 3.27 ERA with a 50:10 K:BB through nine starts during that stretch. He's lined up for a rematch with the Nationals at home next week.
Sep 13 2022Alcantara (12-8) took the loss Tuesday against Philadelphia, allowing two runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out four in seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara held the Phillies scoreless through the first six innings, scattering six singles and a walk. With one out in the seventh, he gave up a single and Nick Maton took him deep for a two-run homer. He's been a victim of the long ball of late and has given up seven home runs in his last five appearances, posting a 5.87 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in that span. Tuesday's outing brought him over 200 innings pitched for the second straight season.
Sep 8 2022Alcantara did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing five runs on eight hits over six innings against the Phillies. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara allowed a solo home run from outfielder Nick Maton in addition to two doubles and a triple. The righty has been wildly inconsistent in his last eight games giving up four runs or more four times and one run or less three times; the big numbers have come against quality opponents such as the Mets, Phillies, Dodgers and Braves. The 27-year-old has allowed six home runs in his last four starts.
Sep 3 2022Alcantara (12-7) took the loss Friday, surrendering six runs on seven hits -- including three home runs -- and a walk over five innings as the Marlins fell 8-1 to Atlanta. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander served up multiple homers for the first time since June 24 and for only the third time all season. Alcantara's numbers on the year remain excellent, but since late July he's been alternating brilliant starts with poor ones, resulting in a 4.08 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 37:11 K:BB through 46.1 innings over his last seven outings. If the pattern holds, he should dominate his next opponent, which tentatively lines up to be the Phillies next Thursday -- one day after his 27th birthday.
Aug 27 2022Alcantara (12-6) earned the win over the Dodgers on Saturday, allowing one run on six hits and two walks while striking out 10 batters over nine innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Los Angeles got the better of Alcantara six days ago, hanging six runs on the ace over 3.2 innings. Alcantara got some redemption Saturday, however, inducing 19 swinging strikes and fanning 10 batters en route to his league-best fourth complete game. The right-hander's only meaningful mistake came in the third inning, when he hung a slider that Mookie Betts crushed for a solo home run. Alcantara's triumph over the league's winningest and highest-scoring team is a feather in the cap of a Cy Young-worthy season during which he has thus far posted a 2.13 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 167:46 K:BB over 185.2 innings.
Aug 21 2022Alcantara (11-6) allowed six runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out five in 3.2 innings, taking the loss Sunday versus the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: By all measures, Alcantara's first tangle with the Dodgers in 2022 was his worst start of the year. The six runs and 10 hits were season highs for the right-hander, who also failed to complete five innings for the first time all season. He's now allowed at least four runs in three of his last five outings, though he kept runs off the board in the other two in that stretch. The Marlins' ace has a 2.19 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 157:44 K:BB through 176.2 innings through 25 starts this season. He'll look to shake off this dud next weekend in a home rematch against the Dodgers.
Aug 15 2022Alcantara (11-5) yielded four hits and two walks over seven scoreless frames Monday, striking out seven and earning a win over the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara was back to his usual self Monday after coughing up four runs against the Phillies in his last outing. Just one Padre reached scoring position against him as he turned in his seventh scoreless start of the year. He lowered his season ERA to 1.92 with a 152:43 K:BB across 173 frames. Alcantara is lined up to start in Oakland next week.
Aug 11 2022Alcantara (10-5) took the loss Wednesday, allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk over 7.2 innings against Philadelphia. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara cruised through seven innings, allowing two hits and one run on only 71 pitches. However, the Phillies figured something out in the eighth, erupting for six hits and three runs off the NL Cy Young candidate to turn a two-run deficit into a 4-3 advantage. Philadelphia went 6-for-7 off Alcantara in the frame with RBI knocks from Brandon Marsh, Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto. Alcantara's eight hits allowed tied his season high, and it was just the fourth time this year he's allowed four or more runs. Regardless, Miami's ace still sports a 2.01 ERA across a league-leading 166.0 innings pitched.
Aug 3 2022Alcantara (10-4) gave up six hits and one walk while striking out three over nine scoreless innings to earn the win in a 3-0 victory over the Reds on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara found himself in a bases-loaded jam in the first inning, due in part to his sloppy fielding on a softly hit grounder up the first base side of the diamond by Joey Votto. Despite throwing 22 pitches in the opening frame, the 26-year-old right-hander settled into a groove and only needed 83 to get through the next eight innings. Alcantara's performance moved him ahead of Framber Valdez to first in MLB with three complete games this season and lowers his ERA to 1.88 - good for best in the National League. The Marlins' ace is expected to take his next turn in the rotation at Philadelphia.
Jul 29 2022Alcantara allowed four runs on eight hits and three walks over five innings during Friday's loss to the Mets. He struck out five and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara yielded three runs in the second inning, including a two-run triple by Starling Marte, followed by Marte's solo shot in the fourth. It was the first time since June 24 that the 26-year-old has given up more than three runs and his third time doing so this season. His ERA still stands at a terrific 1.99 alongside a 138:39 K:BB through 149.1 frames. Alcantara is projected to face the Reds at home next week.
Jul 25 2022Alcantara did not factor into the decision against Pittsburgh on Sunday, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out 10 and walking three over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara left the game with the Marlins up 3-2, but he did not factor into the decision as the Pirates ended up tying the game, taking it into the 10th inning. Alcantara threw 70 of 105 pitches for strikes and had double-digit strikeouts in a game for the third time this month. The righty has allowed just four earned runs in 29 innings this month, good for a 1.24 July ERA. He will take a 1.81 season ERA into his next appearance.
Jul 16 2022Alcantara (9-4) took the loss Friday as the Marlins were downed 2-1 by the Phillies, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks over eight innings. He struck out 12. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander delivered his usual throwback performance, lasting at least seven innings for an incredible 13th straight start on an efficient 106 pitches (75 strikes), and Alcantara took a shutout into the seventh inning before finally stumbling. Unfortunately, the Miami offense gave him almost no support. Alcantara boasts a 1.31 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and 92:17 K:BB through 102.2 innings over that 13-outing stretch as he heads into his second All-Star Game appearance, and potentially the start for the NL squad.
Jul 10 2022Alcantara allowed six hits and a walk over seven shutout frames in Sunday's win over the Mets. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara sprinkled six singles and a walk across his scoreless outing and never faced much of a threat from the Mets. The 26-year-old has fired 15 shutout innings over his last two starts, lowering his season ERA to 1.73 across a league-leading 130.1 frames. Over his last 12 outings, he's sporting an outstanding 1.24 ERA with an 80:15 K:BB. Alcantara is projected to face the Phillies at home next week.
Jul 6 2022Alcantara (9-3) picked up the win Tuesday, scattering two hits over eight scoreless innings in a 2-1 victory over the Angels. He struck out 10 without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander nearly became the first hurler since Corey Kluber in 2017 to toss back-to-back nine inning complete games, but Marlins manager Don Mattingly elected to hand the ball to closer Tanner Scott in the ninth this time around. Alcantara still continued the dominance that got him named NL Pitcher of the Month for June, and he's compiled a stunning 1.62 ERA, 0.79 ERA and 44:8 K:BB through 55.2 innings -- averaging nearly eight innings an outing -- since the beginning of last month.
Jun 29 2022Alcantara (8-3) allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in nine innings, earning the complete-game win over the Cardinals on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara spent much of the game pitching from behind, but Avisail Garcia gave the Marlins a lead with a two-run home run in the ninth inning. Alcantara was allowed to stay in the game, finishing it off with 117 pitches (76 strikes) to become the first pitcher in the the majors to toss multiple complete games this season. He hasn't pitched fewer than seven innings since May 6. The right-hander owns a sparkling 1.95 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 97:30 K:BB across 115.1 innings in 16 starts this year. The ace will look to keep finding success next week at home against the Angels.
Jun 25 2022Alcantara (7-3) took the loss Friday as the Marlins were downed 5-3 by the Mets, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits over seven innings. He struck out four without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While the right-hander gave Miami his usual length, tossing at least seven innings for the ninth straight start, Alcantara uncharacteristically gave up some untimely hard contact. The Mets tagged him for two solo shots, ending a streak of 62 consecutive innings without serving up a homer, but the biggest blow against Alcantara was a bases-loaded double by Francisco Lindor. Despite the stumble, the Marlins' ace still boasts a 1.40 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and 63:12 K:BB through 70.2 innings over that nine-start stretch.
Jun 19 2022Alcantara (7-2) earned the win Sunday against the Mets, striking out eight in eight innings while allowing two runs on six hits and a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was just a typical start for Alcantara this season as he efficiently worked late into the ballgame and stifled his opponent. Five times he retired the side after facing only three batters. The 26-year-old has tossed at least seven innings while allowing two or fewer earned runs in eight straight starts. For the season, he is first in innings pitched and batting average against and second in the league with a 1.72 ERA. His next start will likely be next weekend against the Mets.
Jun 13 2022Alcantara allowed two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out five over 7.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara continues to eat innings -- he's completed at least seven frames in his last seven starts. He was probably left in a little too long Monday, as he walked the first two batters he faced in the eighth inning before getting a double play. Steven Okert then allowed the tying to run to score, making this the first time since since May 6 that Alcantara has allowed multiple earned runs. The Marlins' ace has a 1.68 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 82:27 K:BB across 91.1 innings in 13 starts overall. He's projected for a road start versus the Mets this weekend.
Jun 9 2022Alcantara didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 2-1 extra-inning win over the Nationals, allowing six hits over nine scoreless innings while striking out six without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was another stellar performance from the right-hander, but neither team pushed across a run until the 10th inning, denying Alcantara his seventh win of the year. He's gone at least seven innings and given up one earned run or fewer in six straight starts, making him the first pitcher to put together a run like that since Jake Arrieta in his Cy Young Award-winning 2015 campaign. Alcantara's 1.61 ERA is also the best mark in Marlins history through a pitcher's first 12 starts, and he's added a 0.94 WHIP and 77:24 K:BB through 83.2 innings.
Jun 2 2022Alcantara (6-2) earned the victory, striking out eight in seven shutout innings while allowing three hits and two walks in a 3-0 win Thursday over San Francisco. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Giants had runners on first and second with one out in the first inning but Alcantara pitched out of the jam. He never again was under duress as he dominated his final six frames. Over his last five starts, he has pitched seven innings or more and allowed one earned run or fewer each time, compiling a 0.69 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and 40:6 K:BB in 39 innings. His next start will likely be in the middle of next week against Washington.
May 29 2022Alcantara (5-1) picked up the win in Saturday's 4-1 victory over Atlanta, allowing one run on four hits over eight innings. He struck out 14 without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was another dominant performance from the right-hander, who tied his career high with the 14 whiffs. Alcantara fired 73 of 108 pitches for strikes as he reeled off his fourth straight quality start and seventh of the season. The hot streak has left him with a dazzling 2.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 63:22 K:BB through an MLB-leading 67.2 innings.
May 22 2022Alcantara (4-2) yielded three unearned runs on six hits and two walks over nine innings Sunday, striking out seven and earning a win over Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara allowed one run in the fifth and two in the ninth but wasn't charged with any due to errors. He set new season highs with 115 pitches, seven punchouts, and 25 swinging strikes. The 26-year-old righty has given up two runs over 24 innings in his last three outings, dropping his season ERA to 2.11 through 59.2 frames. Alcantara will look to keep the momentum rolling in Atlanta next weekend.
May 16 2022Alcantara (3-2) earned the win after allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out five over eight innings Monday against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara gave up his only run of the game in the top of the first inning on an RBI single to left field, but he would settle in and work deep into the series opener. He would exit the outing with an 8-1 lead after pounding the strike zone, firing 71 of 100 pitches for strikes. Alcantara has accrued a 2.49 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with a 42:20 K:BB through eight starts in 2022 (50.2 innings).
May 15 2022Alcantara is starting Monday against the Nationals, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander initially lined up to start Tuesday's matchup, but he'll be pushed up a day after Jesus Luzardo (forearm) was placed on the 15-day injured list Sunday. However, Alcantara will be on normal rest since the Marlins had a day off Thursday. Over his last five starts, the 26-year-old has posted a 2.59 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 31.1 innings.
May 11 2022Alcantara pitched seven innings, giving up one run on two hits and three walks in the win Wednesday over the Diamondbacks. He struck out six and did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The only blemish on Alcantara's line came in the bottom of the third inning when Alek Thomas took him deep for a solo shot. Overall, the 26-year-old has rebounded well after a tough five-run outing against the Mariners on May 1, surrendering three runs over 11.2 innings while striking out 11 in his last two starts. Alcantara will carry a 2.74 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with 37 punchouts into his next outing, which tentatively lines up to be Tuesday versus the Nationals.
May 7 2022Alcantara (2-2) was handed the loss during Friday's 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Padres, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 4.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara breezed through three innings after surrendering one run in the first but was tagged for two more runs in the fifth on three hits and an error. The 26-year-old has prevented runs well enough -- two or less permitted in five of six starts -- but efficiency has been an issue as he's gone less than six innings in half his starts after being one of four pitchers with 200 innings last season. He'll look to get back in the win column against Arizona next week.
May 1 2022Alcantara (2-1) took the loss to the Mariners on Sunday, allowing five runs on six hits -- including two home runs -- over 5.2 innings. He struck out six and walked four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A pair of long balls sunk Alcantara in this one -- one off the bat of J.P. Crawford and the first hit by Julio Rodriguez at the major-league level. Alcantara had just turned in three consecutive quality starts prior to this outing, and he still has a 2.90 ERA this season despite the hiccup. His fantasy managers are still waiting for more strikeouts on the strength of his 97-mph heater, but his swinging-strike rate remains modest at the moment.
Apr 21 2022Alcantara didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 2-0 loss to the Cardinals, allowing four hits and a walk over eight scoreless innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander shut down the Cardinals' offense over 98 pitches (62 strikes), and Alcantara didn't allow a runner to get past second base all night. Unfortunately, the Marlins' bats couldn't get anything going either, and he exited the game in a scoreless tie. Alcantara will take a 1.86 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 15:7 K:BB through 19.1 innings into his next outing.
Apr 14 2022Alcantara (1-0) allowed two earned runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out five across 6.1 innings to earn the win Thursday against the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara allowed consecutive hits to begin the game -- which resulted in a run crossing the plate -- but he settled in from there to earn his first win of the season. Alcantara had the Philadelphia lineup guessing throughout his start, as he earned 19 swinging strikes across 95 total pitches. After walking five batters in his first start of the season, Alcantara also showed significantly improved control in his outing Thursday. He currently lines up to make his third start of the campaign Wednesday against St. Louis.
Apr 8 2022Alcantara didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 6-5 extra-inning loss to the Giants, giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits and five walks over five innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander threw only 44 of 83 pitches for strikes before exiting with Miami down 3-0, but a ninth-inning rally took him off the hook for a loss. Considering he posted a career-best 6.0 percent walk rate in 2021, this performance can be chalked up to an abbreviated spring buildup. Alcantara will look to sharpen his control in his next start Thursday against the Phillies, in the Marlins' home opener.
Apr 2 2022Alcantara will start the Marlins' Opening Day matchup against the Giants on Friday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara has developed into the Marlins' ace across the last three seasons and will unsurprisingly serve as the Opening Day starter for a third consecutive year. The right-hander made a career-high 33 starts in 2021 and posted a 3.19 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 201:50 K:BB in 205.2 innings.
Mar 24 2022Alcantara gave up one run on one hit over four innings in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Nationals. He struck out four without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Juan Soto took him deep in the first inning, but there's no shame in losing a battle against arguably the best pure hitter in the game. Alcantara is off to a strong start this spring as he prepares for another Opening Day assignment for the Marlins and looks to build on the 3.16 ERA and 1.09 WHIP he's posted over the last two seasons.
Mar 19 2022Alcantara struck out one over three perfect innings in Friday's Grapefruit League opener against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander is expected to make his third straight Opening Day start for the Marlins this season, and Alcantara looked like he was nearly in midseason form already as he took the mound for the first time this spring for game action. Alcantara set career highs in wins (nine), innings (205.2) and strikeouts (201) in 2021, and with more offensive support the 26-year-old's fantasy value could take another step forward this season.
Nov 28 2021Alcantara signed a five-year, $56 million contract extension with the Marlins on Sunday, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara has spent the past four seasons in Miami, and he'll remain under team control for what would be his first two years of free agency. The right-hander tossed a career-high 205.2 innings across 33 starts last year and posted a 3.19 ERA and 1.07 WHIP.
Nov 22 2021Alcantara and the Marlins are working toward a five-year contract extension worth at least $55 million, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The two sides are likely to finalize the deal within the next few days, giving the 26-year-old right-hander some longer-term security while allowing the Marlins to keep him under club control for what would be his first two years of free agency. Alcantara emerged as one of the game's top young frontline arms in 2021, covering 205.2 innings while posting a 3.19 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 201:50 K:BB.
Sep 25 2021Alcantara (9-14) allowed three earned runs on nine hits and no walks with six strikeouts through six innings, taking the loss in Saturday's 7-3 defeat to the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Instead of being lights out as he had been over his prior three starts, Alcantara was merely fine against Tampa Bay. Five Rays crossed home under his watch, with the big blow coming via a two-run homer by Mike Zunino in the fifth inning. Alcantara emerged from the dugout to start the seventh, but found himself heading back to the bench rather quickly after giving up a single and an RBI double. With his six frames worked Saturday night, the right-hander presently trails only the Phillies' Zack Wheeler in innings pitched this season. The 26-year-old lines up for one more start, which projects to come against the Phillies on Friday.
Sep 19 2021Alcantara allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk over six innings in Sunday's win over Pittsburgh. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara committed a pair of errors in the first inning, leading to Cole Tucker scoring an unearned run. He later gave up an RBI triple to Anthony Alford before recording an out in the seventh. It was his shortest outing and lowest strikeout total since his Aug. 6 start in Colorado. Still, he lowered his season ERA to 3.05 with a 189:49 K:BB through 194.2 frames. Alcantara is lined up to face the Rays on the road next weekend.
Sep 14 2021Alcantara (9-13) picked up the win Monday, allowing only one hit over eight scoreless innings in a 3-0 victory over the Nationals. He struck out seven without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander continues to dominate, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning and eventually exiting after 96 pitches (68 strikes). Alcantara's performance was even more remarkable considering he nearly came out of the game in the fourth after taking a screaming Juan Soto comebacker off his knee. The Miami ace has reeled off seven straight quality starts, posting a scintillating 1.55 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 64:7 K:BB through 52.1 innings over that stretch as he positions himself to be a Cy Young favorite in 2022.
Sep 2 2021Alcantara (8-13) took the loss Thursday against the Mets, giving up four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts over 6.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara was staked to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Mets chipped away with a Jonathan Villar solo homer in the bottom of the frame, two more runs in the fourth -- including one on an Alcantara balk -- and a Dominic Smith RBI single in the seventh. Alcantara has managed to work into at least the seventh inning in seven of his last eight starts, but he's won just two of those outings. He'll take a 3.36 ERA and 164:47 K:BB over 171.2 innings into his next start, tentatively scheduled to come at home against the same Mets squad.
Aug 29 2021Alcantara (8-12) picked up the win in Saturday's 6-1 victory over the Reds, allowing one run on six hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out a career-high 12. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander got staked to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back, slicing through the Cincinnati lineup on 98 pitches (and a whopping 75 strikes) while fanning double-digit batters for the third time in his last six starts. A 10-run disaster at Coors Field aside, Alcantara has looked like a bona fide ace lately, delivering quality starts in six of his last seven outings with a 3.35 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 53:10 K:BB through 45.2 innings over that stretch.
Aug 22 2021Alcantara (7-12) took the loss Sunday versus Cincinnati. He allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out 11 in seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After giving up a 10-spot at Coors Field on Aug. 6, Alcantara has come back dominant. He's yielded just three runs across his last 22 innings while dialing up 25 strikeouts, but he has a 1-2 record to show for that impressive stretch of pitching. While Miami's offense isn't likely to provide a lot of help, Alcantara likely deserves a few more wins than the seven he's earned in 26 starts. He takes a 3.35 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 146:46 K:BB across 158.1 innings into his next start, projected for a rematch with Cincinnati next weekend.
Aug 17 2021Alcantara (7-11) allowed one earned run on five hits and one walk while striking out seven across eight innings but took the loss Tuesday against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara allowed a one-out walk in the eighth inning, which turned into the the only run he allowed in the game. He dominated Atlanta otherwise, racking up 22 swinging strikes on 105 total pitches while also not allowing an extra-base hit. Alcantara has dominated of late. Even accounting for the 10 earned runs he allowed at Coors Field, he has allowed only 11 runs across his last 25.2 innings -- spanning four starts. For the season, Alcantara has a 3.39 ERA with 135 strikeouts across 151.1 frames.
Aug 11 2021Alcantara (7-10) picked up the win in Wednesday's 7-0 victory over the Padres, giving up four hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander came roaring back after his 10-run disaster at Coors Field in his last outing, firing 65 of 104 pitches for strikes. Alcantara had delivered three quality starts in his last four trips to the mound, giving him 16 on the season, and he sports a 3.52 ERA and 128:42 K:BB through 143.1 innings.
Aug 6 2021Alcantara (6-10) yielded 10 runs on 10 hits and two walks over 3.2 innings Friday, striking out one and taking a loss against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Through three innings, the Rockies scored just two runs off Alcantara, including a solo shot by C.J. Cron in the second inning. Then a disastrous fourth inning came. The 6-foot-5 righty was hammered for eight runs, including homers by Charlie Blackmon and Cron before he was forced out of the game. His season ERA jumped from 3.12 to 3.70 through 136.1 innings. Alcantara is lined up to face the Padres in San Diego next week.
Aug 1 2021Alcantara allowed two hits and a walk while striking out 10 over seven innings in a no-decision versus the Yankees on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old put together a stellar performance in the series finale -- arguably his best of the year -- but Anthony Bass and Richard Bleier wasted it by combining to allow a pair of runs in the eighth inning. Alcantara lowered his ERA to 3.12 with a 1.12 WHIP and 120:39 K:BB through 132.2 innings across 22 starts. The right-hander projects for a risky start in Colorado next week.
Jul 28 2021Alcantara (6-9) earned the win Tuesday at Baltimore after allowing three runs on six hits with five strikeouts and a walk across six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander pounded the zone Tuesday and delivered 62 of 85 pitches for strikes. He served up two solo homers across six frames and attempted to come out for the seventh, but he was pulled after giving up another run on a double and a single without recording an out. In 12 starts since surrendering eight runs over 1.1 innings during his outing May 14 against the Dodgers, Alcantara has a 2.77 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 59:22 K:BB over 74.2 frames.
Jul 25 2021The Marlins reinstated Alcantara (personal) from the bereavement list ahead of Sunday's game against the Padres, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to McPherson, Alcantara was seen throwing a side session Sunday, so the Marlins presumably won't look to him to eat innings in the series finale, which Miami is treating as a bullpen game. Instead, Alcantara will likely slot back into Miami's rotation for Tuesday's series opener in Baltimore for what would mark his second start since the All-Star break.
Jul 20 2021Alcantara was placed on the bereavement list Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara had been scheduled to start Wednesday in Washington. The Marlins have yet to announce who will start in his place. Players may spend between three and seven days on the bereavement list, so it's possible Alcantara's next start is merely delayed by two days, though he could also wind up missing a turn or two in the rotation.
Jul 16 2021Alcantara (5-9) gave up five runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks while striking out three over three innings in Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader against the Phillies. He took the loss. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All three runs came in the first inning. Bryce Harper doubled with two outs, the next two batters walked and Travis Jankowski hit a broken-bat, bases-clearing double just inside the first-base bag. Alcantara needed 80 pitches to get through the three frames. This was his second-shortest start of the year, and it only raised his ERA to 3.23. Alcantara tentatively lines up to start Wednesday in Washington.
Jul 8 2021Alcantara (5-8) allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk while striking out five across four innings to take the loss Thursday against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara held the Dodgers in check through three innings, allowing only one walk and one single. He surrendered an unearned run in the fourth inning but came undone in the fifth frame by surrendering four consecutive singles before being pulled. While it was far from Alcantara's best outing, he kept the ball in the yard and issued only one free pass. Even with the poor outing, he has a 3.09 ERA with 102 strikeouts across 116.2 innings for the season.
Jul 4 2021Alcantara (5-7) picked up the win Saturday, allowing one unearned run on five hits and four walks over six innings in a 3-2 victory over Atlanta. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander battled his control and threw 62 of 99 pitches for strikes, but Alcantara compensated by giving up little hard contact as all five Atlanta hits were singles. The quality start was his 13th in 18 trips to the mound, and he'll take a 2.96 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 97:33 K:BB through 112.2 innings into his next outing.
Jul 2 2021Alcantara will start Saturday against Atlanta instead of Sunday as previously scheduled, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander pitched last Sunday versus the Nationals and surrendered five runs (four earned over 5.1 innings, and he'll switch spots in the rotation with Zach Thompson this weekend. The move shouldn't have any broader implications for Alcantara, since he still lines up for one additional start before the All-Star break, which begins July 12.
Jun 27 2021Alcantara (4-7) allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out three in 5.1 innings to take the loss against the Nationals on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara gave up an unearned run in the top of the first inning Sunday but held the Nationals scoreless across the next four innings. However, he allowed a pair of home runs in the sixth inning to put him in line for his seventh loss of the year. Sunday's appearance snapped a streak of seven consecutive starts in which he had lasted at least six innings, and the right-hander has now been charged with four losses across his last eight outings. Alcantara tentatively lines up to make his next start on the road against Atlanta on Saturday.
Jun 23 2021Alcantara didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to the Blue Jays, giving up one run on five hits and a walk over eight innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He also hit a batter, which proved costly when Bo Bichette came around to score Toronto's first run in the sixth inning. Alcantara was otherwise sharp as he delivered his fourth straight quality start and 11th in 16 outings, a stretch of success reflected in his 2.93 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 90:26 K:BB through 101.1 innings.
Jun 16 2021Alcantara (4-6) allowed one unearned run on six hits in 8.1 innings with seven strikeouts and one walk, receiving the loss in Wednesday's 1-0 defeat against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The righty had made it through 8.1 shutout innings before Paul Goldschmidt, who had reached on an error, scored the winning run on a Yadier Molina single. Despite not earning the win, Alcantara recorded a third consecutive quality start and the fifth in his last six outings. The lack of run support has led to an unremarkable 4-6 record, but Alcantara's other numbers (3.09 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 87 strikeouts) have kept him in the conversation with fantasy's elite starting pitchers. He's projected to make his next start Tuesday against the Blue Jays.
Jun 11 2021Alcantara (4-5) allowed two runs on five hits and two walks over six innings Friday, striking out six and earning a win over Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara gave up RBI base hits to Ozzie Albies in the first and third innings but kept Atlanta's offense scoreless for the rest of his outing. Through 14 starts this season, the 25-year-old owns a 3.39 ERA and an 80:24 K:BB across 85 innings. He's allowed two or fewer runs in 10 of those 14 outings. Alcantara is lined up to take the mound in St. Louis next week.
Jun 6 2021Alcantara (3-5) allowed one unearned run on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts in eight innings. He earned the win Sunday versus Pittsburgh. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Adam Frazier got aboard on an error and came around to score on a Colin Moran double in the first inning, but that was all Alcantara would surrender. The right-hander bounced back well after a rough turn versus Toronto on Tuesday. The 25-year-old has a 3.30 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 74:22 K:BB across 79 innings this year. He lines up to face Atlanta in next weekend's series.
Jun 1 2021Alcantara (2-5) allowed four earned runs on nine hits and no walks while striking out four across six innings to take the loss Tuesday against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara didn't have a particularly dominant performance, as he generated only 10 swinging strikes on 89 total pitches. The nine hits he surrendered were also the most he's allowed in any start this season. Even so, the majority of the damage against him came on a three-run home run by Vladimir Guerrero, and he otherwise managed to work out of jams. Despite the slight setback in this outing, Alcantara has maintained a 3.68 ERA with 68 strikeouts across 71 innings for the campaign.
May 30 2021Alcantara won't pitch as scheduled Sunday at Boston since the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's unclear when the interleague contest will be rescheduled. The Marlins have yet to announce their updated rotation plans, but Alcantara figures to take the mound Tuesday versus the Blue Jays after Monday's scheduled off day.
May 25 2021Alcantara (2-4) took the loss Tuesday versus the Marlins after allowing two runs on two hits with four strikeouts and one walk over eight innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old surrendered a two-run homer to Rhys Hoskins during the fourth-inning, which was enough to saddle him with the loss since the Miami offense failed to score any runs. Alcantara has a 3.46 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 64:20 K:BB across 65 innings (11 starts) in 2021.
May 20 2021Alcantara (2-3) allowed two hits and three walks while striking out nine over six shutout innings to earn the win Thursday versus Philadelphia. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara bounced back in a big way after allowing eight runs in 1.1 innings in his last start. The right-hander kept runs off the board for the first time since his Opening Day start versus Tampa Bay. The 25-year-old has posted a 3.63 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 60:19 K:BB across 57 innings this season. He's projected to get another look versus Philadelphia next week.
May 14 2021Alcantara (1-3) took the loss Friday, allowing eight runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in a 9-6 loss. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After an easy first, Alcantara surrendered eight baserunners while only recording one out in the second. This was the only start that the 2019-all-star allowed more than four runs or pitched fewer than five innings, keeping him as one of baseball's more consistent starters,
May 9 2021Alcantara allowed one run on five hits and two walks with six strikeouts over seven innings Sunday versus Milwaukee. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara's only big mistake was a fourth-inning solo home run from Milwaukee slugger Daniel Vogelbach. Through eight outings, Alcantara has racked up six quality starts. He remains at 1-2 with a 2.72 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 48:14 K:BB in 49.2 innings this season. Miami's ace tentatively lines up for a tough matchup with the Dodgers next weekend.
May 4 2021Alcantara didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 9-3 win over the Diamondbacks, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk over six innings while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander pitched well enough to win, throwing 69 of 95 pitches for strikes in his fifth quality start of the season, but despite exiting with a 3-2 lead Alcantara came away empty-handed as the bullpen let the tying run cross the plate before the Marlins' offense erupted in the late innings. He'll take a 2.95 ERA and 42:13 K:BB through 42.2 innings into his next outing.
Apr 28 2021Alcantara (1-2) earned the win Wednesday at Milwaukee after allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and zero walks across seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old surrendered a two-run homer to Kolten Wong during the third inning Wednesday, but he otherwise kept the Brewers off the board to record his first victory of 2021. Alcantara has a 3.19 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 36:11 K:BB over 36.2 innings this season, and he lines up for a matchup with the Diamondbacks next week.
Apr 24 2021Alcantara (0-2) allowed two runs on four hits and four walks while striking out four over five innings in a loss to the Giants on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara struggled with his command in this one with four walks through the first three innings but was only punished on a two-run homer by Mike Yastrzemski in the third. The 25-year-old owns a 3.34 ERA and 32:11 K:BB through 29.2 innings but is still in search of his first win which could come next Wednesday on the road against the Brewers.
Apr 17 2021Alcantara allowed four earned runs on six hits and zero walks while striking out seven in Saturday's win over the Giants. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara cruised through the first six innings before surrendering all four runs in the seventh inning. Brandon Belt homered off Alcantara to start the inning and Alcantara only managed one more out before allowing three more baserunners to end his night. The 25-year-old had good command again Saturday, striking out seven without giving up a single walk. This brings his season total to 28 strikeouts and seven walks across 24.2 innings.
Apr 13 2021Alcantara didn't factor into the decision in Monday's win over Atlanta, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks over 6.1 innings while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The outing wasn't up to the standards Alcantara established through his first two starts of the year, but he still delivered his third straight quality start while tossing 90 pitches (54 strikes). The right-hander has an impressive 2.45 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 21:7 K:BB through 18.1 innings, and he'll look for his first win of the season in his nest start, set for Saturday at home against the Giants.
Apr 7 2021Alcantara's next start has been pushed back one day to Monday instead of Sunday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Marlins are off on Friday, and instead of keeping Alcantara and the rest of the rotation on schedule, they'll use that day off to give them an extra day of rest. They haven't announced Sunday's starter, but De Nicola suggests that it could be either Braxton Garrett or Daniel Castano, both of whom are at the Marlins' alternate training site.
Apr 6 2021Alcantara (0-1) took the loss Tuesday, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks over six innings as the Marlins fell 4-2 to the Cardinals. He struck out 10. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander has come firing out of the gate, delivering two straight quality starts with a 17:4 K:BB in 12 innings to begin the season, but Alcantara doesn't have a victory to show for it. He'll look for win no. 1 in his next outing, set for Sunday on the road against the Mets.
Mar 18 2021Alcantara has been named the Opening Day starter for the Marlins, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara struck out nine batters during Wednesday's spring game, and manager Don Mattingly officially named Alcantara the starter for the team's April 1 matchup against the Rays. The right-hander has allowed two unearned runs on seven hits and eight walks while striking out 19 over 12.2 innings during four spring starts.
Mar 17 2021Alcantara tossed five scoreless frames Wednesday in the Marlins' 3-2 loss to the Mets, scattering three hits while striking out nine and walking none. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara's control and command were both on point Wednesday, as he fired in 70 percent of his pitches for strikes and allowed one flyout against three groundouts. The Marlins have yet to announce an Opening Day starter, but Alcantara has established himself as the clear favorite to get the nod with how he's pitched so far this spring. Through four outings spanning 12.2 innings, Alcantara has allowed only four unearned runs to go with a 19:8 K:BB and a .163 batting average allowed.
Feb 26 2021Alcantara will start Monday's spring game against the Mets, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old will start the second game of spring training for the Marlins and should also be in the mix to start Opening Day. Alcantara pitched well in 2020 with a 3.00 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 39:15 K:BB across 42 innings (seven starts).
Oct 6 2020Alcantara took the loss during Game 1 of the NLDS against the Braves on Tuesday after surrendering five runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts and one walk over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was sitting on a quality start with three runs allowed through six frames, but he returned for the seventh inning, gave up two infield singles and was removed. Both baserunners then came across to score as Atlanta put up six runs during the inning. Alcantara would need to pitch on short rest if he's to make another start or appear out of the bullpen during the five-game series, otherwise he lines up to pitch Game 1 of the NLCS if the Marlins can recover to beat the Braves.
Oct 1 2020Alcantara earned the win against the Cubs on Wednesday in Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series. He allowed one run on three hits and three walks while striking out four over 6.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lone blemish was a solo homer off the bat of Ian Happ in the fifth inning. Alcantara spent time on the COVID-19 IL earlier this season and struggled in his first start back, but he has been better than ever since turning the page on that Aug. 30 outing with only nine earned runs allowed in his last 38 innings. Miami may have two futures aces atop the rotation in Alcantara and Sixto Sanchez.
Sep 26 2020Alcantara allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out nine batters in Friday's win over the Yankees. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara saved his best performance this year for the most opportune time as his season-high nine strikeouts and 7.1 innings played a key part in the Marlins' playoff-clinching win Friday night. The only time the 25-year-old struggled was in the third inning, when a walk and back-to-back doubles resulted in two runs for the Yankees. Following the second double, Alcantara found a groove, retiring 12 of the next 13 batters, and he came back out for the eighth still clinging to a 3-2 lead. The right-hander faced two batters, allowing a leadoff single and striking out Clint Frazier before he was removed from the game after throwing 98 pitches. The Yankees would end up tying the game in the inning, resulting in a third run charged to Alcantara, but he looked good in his final regular-season appearance. Alcantara will finish the regular season with a 3.00 ERA and 1.19 WHIP across 42 innings and should be the favorite to start Miami's first postseason game.
Sep 20 2020Alcantara (3-2) allowed one run on five hits and two walks over six innings in a win over the Nationals in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara got the better of Max Scherzer in this low-scoring affair to get his record back over .500 for the season. Since his five-run blowup in his return from the COVID-19 IL, Alcantara has been excellent, posting a 2.25 ERA and 23:9 K:BB over his last four starts (24 innings). He will be put to the test next weekend in a road matchup against the Yankees to close out his regular season.
Sep 15 2020Alcantara (2-2) took the loss Tuesday against the Red Sox after giving up one run on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks across six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander pitched well Tuesday but was saddled with the loss as the Marlins mustered only four hits. Alcantara has a 3.45 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 26:11 K:BB through 26.2 innings and lines up to pitch one of the games during Sunday's doubleheader versus the Nationals.
Sep 10 2020Alcantara pitched six innings against the Phillies on Thursday, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out four. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara wasn't particularly sharp in the performance, but he was also the victim of poor fielding as half of the runs he allowed were unearned. The right-hander made it through six frames for the third time in his four starts and reached the 100-pitch mark for the second straight outing. He departed in line for his second loss but managed to escape with a no-decision when the Marlins offense pushed through in the final two frames for a comeback win. Alcantara will next toe the mound Tuesday in a home start against Boston.
Sep 6 2020Alcantara (2-1) allowed one run on three hits and three walks while striking out eight across six innings Saturday as he earned the win over the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara was dominant Saturday, striking out a season-high eight while surrendering just one run on a fifth-inning double to right by Michael Perez. The young right-hander struggled against the same Rays team last Sunday, when he allowed five runs in four innings, so it was nice to see him bounce back and pick up the win. Alcantara lowered his ERA to a 3.78 but has shown some struggles finding the strike zone at times, owning a 17:7 K:BB across 16.2 innings of work this season. He lines up to face the Phillies on Thursday.
Aug 30 2020Alcantara (1-1) allowed eight runs (five earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out two over four innings as he was charged with the loss Sunday against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara was sidelined for the past month after testing positive for COVID-19 but returned to the mound against Tampa Bay. He was roughed up as the Rays tallied three runs in the first inning, and his start was relatively brief as Tampa Bay continued to drive up the score. As a result, Alcantara was charged with the loss. His next turn through the rotation should come at home Sunday against the Rays.
Aug 29 2020The Marlins plan to reinstate Alcantara from the COVID-19 injured list Sunday, when he'll start the team's series finale against the Rays, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara was one of 18 Marlins players to test positive for the coronavirus earlier this month, but after being cleared to report to the team's alternate training site to resume workouts a couple weeks ago, he's ready to reclaim his spot in the rotation. The right-hander's lone start this season came on Opening Day versus the Phillies, when he tossed 6.2 innings and gave up two runs while striking out seven. Due to his month-long layoff, Alcantara will likely have his pitch count capped Sunday, limiting his upside in DFS contests.
Aug 28 2020Alcantara is ready to return to the rotation and could start Sunday against the Rays, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It takes a little longer for a starting pitcher to get ready to return from COVID-19 than a position player or reliever, but the word is that Alcantara is ready. Pablo Lopez is starting Saturday, but Sunday's spot is open and it seems probable Alcantara will fill that void. He was a strong breakout candidate coming into the year and struck out seven in 6.2 innings while allowing one earned run in his lone start of the season.
Aug 20 2020Manager Don Mattingly said Alcantara looked "really good" in his simulated game Thursday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The skipper added that Alcantara -- who threw around 50 pitches -- is "moving in the right direction," though he didn't offer up a specific timetable for his return. Alcantara has been sidelined all month after testing positive for COVID-19 at the end of July.
Aug 19 2020Alcantara (not injury related) is expected to throw live batting practice Thursday, Andre Fernandez of Sirius XM Radio reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara was originally scheduled to throw around 50 pitches against hitters Wednesday, but the session was pushed back a day due to inclement weather. If everything goes well during Thursday's throwing session, Alcantara could be cleared to rejoin the big-league rotation early next week.
Aug 18 2020Alcantara (not injury related) is expected to face hitters Wednesday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara was cleared to resume baseball activities Saturday and should throw approximately 50 pitches against hitters Wednesday. If all goes well, his next throwing session could be in the major-league rotation as early as Monday against the Nationals.
Aug 15 2020Alcantara (illness) was cleared for reinstatement Sunday and will begin working at the Marlins' alternate training site, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara was one of the Marlins who tested positive for COVID-19 in early august, but he'll resume baseball activities in Jupiter prior to rejoining the major-league roster. It's unclear what shape the right-hander is in, but a better timeline for his return to the big leagues could come into focus once he's able to work at alternate camp.
Aug 4 2020Alcantara was placed on the COVID-19 injured list, Jared Diamond of The Wall Street Journal reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara is among the many Miami players who tested positive for COVID-19 amid a team-wide outbreak. Alcantara previously submitted a dominant outing in his season debut in Philadelphia last Friday, covering 6.2 innings and allowing just two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks while whiffing seven.
Jul 29 2020Alcantara is among the 15 Miami players who has recently tested positive for COVID-19 amid a team-wide outbreak, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Along with Alcantara, Garrett Cooper, Jose Urena, Miguel Rojas, Harold Ramirez and Jorge Alfaro are the other known players to have tested positive for the coronavirus in the wake of the team's season-opening series in Philadelphia last weekend. Major League Baseball has since canceled all Marlins games this week, but Alcantara can't be considered a lock to be cleared to play when Miami returns to action Aug. 4 versus the Phillies. Alcantara previously submitted a dominant outing in his season debut in Philadelphia last Friday, covering 6.2 innings and allowing just two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks while whiffing seven.
Jul 24 2020Alcantara (1-0) was charged with two runs (one earned) on three hits over 6.2 innings in a win over the Phillies on Friday. He struck out seven and issued two walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Alcantara carried the momentum he picked up over the final two months of 2019 into his first outing of 2020, outdueling Aaron Nola to lead Miami to a road win on Opening Day. He allowed a homer to Didi Gregorius but was able to blow past most of the Phillies' hitters with his high-90s fastball, inducing 14 swinging strikes overall on 87 pitches. The 24-year-old seems to be slowly growing into his ace role and will look to keep it going next week in Baltimore.
Jul 14 2020Manager Don Mattingly announced Tuesday that Alcantara will start Opening Day against the Phillies on July 24. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 24-year-old posted a 3.88 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 151:81 K:BB over 197.1 innings last season and always appeared ticketed to start Opening Day in 2020, which the team has now confirmed. Alcantara completed a 65-pitch simulated game shortly after reporting for summer training earlier this month and should face minimal limitations to begin the season despite the elongated shutdown.
Jul 6 2020Alcantara completed a 65-pitch simulated game Monday, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Before he reported to summer camp last week, Alcantara was able to throw five simulated games of his own. As a result, the right-hander looks like he won't need long to build up to a normal starter's workload, with Mish suggesting that Alcantara could increase his pitch count to 85 the next time he throws a simulated game. Coming off an All-Star season in which he posted a 3.88 ERA over 197.1 innings, Alcantara looks like the top candidate for Miami's Opening Day nod.
Mar 12 2020Alcantara allowed one run on three hits and two walks over five innings in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander appears to be on the right track heading towards Opening Day. After issuing seven free passes with only one strikeout in his first 3.2 spring innings, Alcantara has posted a more reasonable 7:4 K:BB through his last 8.1 frames.
Mar 7 2020Alcantara allowed two runs on one hit and two walks over 3.1 innings while striking out three in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a step up from his prior efforts, and Alcantara looked strong through three scoreless innings before running out of gas in the fourth, finishing the day having thrown 59 pitches (37 strikes). The right-hander still has a scary 10.29 ERA and 4:9 K:BB through seven innings this spring, but he appears to be healthy -- Alcantara was touching 99 mph with his fastball Friday, per Glenn Sattell of MLB.com -- and a couple more solid performances should allay any concerns heading into Opening Day.
Mar 1 2020Alcantara gave up five runs on five hits and four walks without striking out a batter in a Grapefruit League game against the Orioles on Saturday, Jordan McPherson of The Miami Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander failed to make it out of the second inning, and the rough outing comes after he walked three batters in his spring debut. Control has never been Alcantara's strong suit, but a 1:7 K:BB through his first 3.2 spring innings is not what the Marlins were hoping to see from the 24-year-old. He's still expected to open the regular season at the top of the team's rotation after tossing 197.1 solid innings in 2019, but if he doesn't turn things around soon, Miami may have little choice but to consider other plans.
Sep 29 2019Alcantara (6-14) allowed one run on eight hits with one walk and five strikeouts across six innings to earn a victory against the Phillies on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All too often in 2019, the 24-year-old took a loss when he deserved a better fate, so it was great to see him pitch well and win in the season finale. Alcantara went 2-2 with a 2.59 ERA in September. Overall, he finished 6-14 with a 3.88 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 151 strikeouts in 197.1 innings this season.
Sep 24 2019Alcantara gave up two runs on six hits and zero walks while striking out six in seven innings Tuesday against the Mets. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He has now logged 191.1 innings -- only 18 MLB pitchers have eclipsed the 190-inning mark so far this season. Alcantara's 146:80 K:BB over that span will not rate well on projection systems, but he continues to get better, seemingly with every start, and just turned 24 years old on Sept. 7. He lines up to start the final game of the season in Philadelphia.
Sep 18 2019Alcantara (5-14) was charged with the loss against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, surrendering five runs (four earned) on seven hits and a pair of walks while striking out three across 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander allowed the Diamondbacks to get to him early, serving up a home run to Abraham Alamonte in the first inning. He also allowed a homer to Christian Walker in the fifth. The rougher outing hit a bit harder after Alcantara had allowed just one run over his last two starts (16 innings), including a complete game against the Royals. The 24-year-old will take a 4.00 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 140:80 K:BB into a Tuesday showdown against the Mets.
Sep 13 2019Alcantara (5-13) took the loss despite allowing just a single run on nine hits over seven innings against the Giants on Friday. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's the 10th time this season in 29 starts the Marlins have provided Alcantara with one or fewer runs of support. The 24-year-old has pitched to a 3.93 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 137:78 K:BB in 178.2 innings this season. Alcantara lines up to face the Diamondbacks on Wednesday to close out the road trip.
Sep 8 2019Alcantara (5-12) tossed a 102-pitch shutout Sunday against the Royals, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He has a 2.77 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 42 strikeouts in seven starts (48.2 innings) since the calendar turned to August, but this was the first of those starts where he emerged victorious. While Alcantara's season ERA still sits north of 4.00 (4.04), he only turned 24 years old Saturday, and this recent run is an encouraging sign for his long-term prospects. He starts Friday in San Francisco, so there's no reason he can't continue to be a fantasy asset next week.
Sep 3 2019Alcantara allowed four runs on three hits with four walks and seven strikeouts across seven innings in a no-decision against the Pirates on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 23-year-old continues to rack up the strikeouts, as he's punched out 22 hitters in his last 20 innings, but he has lost his last six decisions and hasn't won a game since June 21. Alcantara is hit or miss in the ERA department as well, so owners deploying him really are just counting on strikeouts, and even so, his strikeout rate has only increased recently. He is 4-12 with a 4.26 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 123 strikeouts in 162.2 innings this season. Alcantara will take the mound again Sunday at home against the Royals.

Jul 24 2018Alcantara (infection) began a rehab assignment at High-A Jupiter on Monday, tossing two innings and giving up five runs (four earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out one in the affiliate's 12-11 win over Fort Myers.Alcantara resumed throwing shortly after the All-Star break and is building his arm back up again now that he has recovered from the right axillary infection that forced him to the 10-day disabled list July 3. Prior to being shut down, Alcantara had settled into a spot in the Miami rotation, but it's unclear if he'll stick around with the big club once he's activated. The right-hander tossed 47 pitches Monday, so he'll likely require one or two more rehab outings before he's ready to handle a starter's workload.
Jul 10 2018Alcantara (axillary infection) has begun his throwing program, the Associated Press reports. It's good to hear he is up and throwing again, but it's still unclear when he could return to the rotation. He is technically eligible to return this weekend against the Phillies, but the Marlins may opt to play it safe an wait until after the All-Star break.
Jul 3 2018Alcantara is expected to start Thursday's game against the Nationals, Craig Mish of Sirius XM reports. With Dan Straily having returned from a five-game suspension Sunday and Jose Urena (shoulder) due to come off the 10-day disabled list to start Wednesday against the Rays, the Marlins have only one spot available for the three new starters -- Alcantara, Pablo Lopez and Elieser Hernandez -- that entered the rotation last week. Alcantara, the club's top pitching prospect, seems to have the edge on the No. 5 gig after acquitting himself well in his team debut June 29, covering five innings and giving up one run on three hits and five walks. The 22-year-old will likely need to show improved control in his subsequent outings before entrenching himself in the rotation, but his mid-to-upper-90s fastball and improving changeup make his long-term ceiling higher than any of Miami 's other starters.
Jul 3 2018Alcantara was placed on the 10-day disabled list due to a right axillary infection, Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports.Alcantara will miss at least one start due to this ailment, but he could be able to return before the All-Star break depending on the severity of this issue. Expect an update on his status once the team establishes a timetable for his activation.
Jun 29 2018Alcantara (1-0) allowed one run on three hits and five walks with two strikeouts through five innings to pick up the win Friday against the Mets.It wasn't pretty, but Alcantara was able to finish the fifth inning to get the victory in his debut with the Marlins, his first major league start after making eight relief appearances in 2017 for the Cardinals. Alcantara needed 98 pitches to get through five frames, and just 50 of them were strikes. When he could locate it, his stuff was impressive. He fastball topped out at 97.2 mph and his off-speed pitches, a slider and a changeup, drew five swinging strikes on 53 offerings. If he can't throw strikes, better lineups will punish him, but Alcantara has intriguing stuff and will get the chance to show what he can do in the otherwise barren Marlins rotation. His next turn comes Wednesday against the Rays.
Jun 29 2018Alcantara will make his debut with the Marlins against the Mets on Friday, Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports.Though Alcantara has yet to be officially recalled by the team, he is listed as Friday's starting pitcher following another impressive showing with Triple-A New Orleans this past weekend. During eight appearances with the Cardinals last year, he logged a 4.32 ERA and 1.80 WHIP, but this will mark his first start at the major-league level.
Jun 27 2018Alcantara will be called up to start Friday's game against the Mets. The Marlins need to add a couple starters to their rotation this weekend, and one of them will be Alcantara, who will be making his first career big-league start Friday. Alcantara is the Marlins' top pitching prospect, but with both Dan Straily (suspension) and Jose Urena (shoulder) returning in the near future, he could head back to Triple-A New Orleans after Friday's start. Still, Alcantara, who owns a respectable 3.71 ERA ERA and 64:34 K:BB over 85 Triple-A innings this year, will get a shot to show what he can do at the top level as a starter.
May 29 2018Alcantara tossed seven innings of one-run ball to pick up the win Tuesday in Triple-A New Orleans' 5-1 victory over Iowa. He scattered five hits and two walks and struck out three. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 3.43 with the quality start and has consistently avoided blowup outings throughout the season, allowing no more than four earned runs in any of his 10 starts. Alcantara's strikeout rate sits at a pedestrian 6.4 K/9 for the season, but he's at least combated the lack of swing-and-miss stuff with improved control, as he has yielded just five total walks over his last five outings. The Marlins will probably give Alcantara a look in the big-league rotation at some point this summer, though expectations should be tempered from a fantasy standpoint in light of his diminished strikeout production and poor team context.
Mar 17 2018Alcantara gave up three runs on six hits and three walks over four innings while striking out four in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals.Four of the hits went for extra bases, including a first-inning homer by Yadier Molina, as the regulars in the Cards' lineup took the former Cards prospect to the woodshed. Alcantara now has an 11:6 K:BB and has given up three home runs through 16 spring innings, and while he still seems to be in the mix for a rotation spot, the Marlins may be better served by giving the 22-year-old fireballer his first taste of Triple-A before bringing him up to the majors for good.
Mar 16 2018Alcantara appears in line to break camp in the big-league rotation, Craig Mish of Sirius XM reports. As Mish notes, Alcantara's schedule lines up for him to start the fourth game of the regular season. This is a big deal, as Miami won't need a fifth starter right away, so for Alcantara to be in line to be the No. 4 starter means that he is clearly ahead of those left competing for the final spot in the rotation. He has a 2.25 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and seven strikeouts in 12 innings this spring, but is probably not quite ready to quality big-league starter. Throwing strikes was a big issue for him last year, and while his fastball and changeup each has the potential to be a monster pitch, his slider lags behind as a clear third pitch. He has more upside than any Marlins starter, as he can touch triple digits with his fastball, so he is worth a flyer in NL-only leagues and deep mixed leagues now that it seems he has the inside track on a rotation spot.
Mar 7 2018Alcantara threw three scoreless innings of relief in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals, walking two batters, hitting two others and uncorking a wild pitch but also allowing zero hits and striking out one.The 22-year-old did his best Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh impression in the outing, but overall Alcantara has had a solid start to his spring, posting a 1.13 ERA and 4:2 K:BB through eight innings. That likely isn't dominant enough to win him a rotation spot out of camp despite the Marlins' precarious pitching situation, but if he does begin the season at Triple-A New Orleans, a hot start could have him back in the majors in the first half.
Feb 21 2018Alcantara is competing for one of the Marlins' final three rotation spots in spring training, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports. With Dan Straily and Jose Urena sitting as the only two locks to open the season in Miami's rotation, Alcantara will join around 10 others in auditioning for one of the remaining three spots. The electric right-hander was one of the two headliners acquired by the Marlins in exchange for Marcell Ozuna earlier in the offseason. He made his major-league debut with the Cardinals in 2017 as a reliever, posting a 4.32 ERA, 1.80 WHIP and 10:6 K:BB across 8.1 innings of work. That said, he worked primarily as a starter with Double-A Springfield prior to his promotion, and assuming he sticks in that role this season, he'll likely require more seasoning in the minors before joining the Marlins' rotation.
Dec 13 2017Alcantara was traded to the Marlins on Wednesday as part of the return package in the trade that sent Marcell Ozuna to the Cardinals, Jon Heyman of FanRagSports.com reports. The rest of the prospects headed to Miami have not yet been revealed, but the flame-throwing right-hander might be the headliner. He can touch triple digits with his fastball, but shaky command and inconsistent secondary offerings have many evaluators pegging him for a high-leverage relief role. He is still just 22, so there is time for him to improve in both areas. The Marlins will continue to develop him as a starter, as they won't be contending anytime soon. The impact on his fantasy value is complicated -- he was likely ticketed for a relief role sooner than later with the Cardinals, which could have yielded saves and strikeouts, but now he will have a chance to max out as a high-strikeout/high-WHIP starter.
Sep 16 2017Alcantara fired a scoreless eighth inning in Friday's 8-2 loss to the Cubs, striking out the side.Alcantara needed only 13 pitches to dispose of Jason Heyward, Javier Baez and Ian Happ, who all went down on swinging strikes. After surrendering a solo home run in his MLB debut back on Sept. 3, the 22-year-old righty has put together consecutive one-inning scoreless outings in which he's allowed no hits and issued just one walk.
Sep 4 2017Alcantara allowed a solo home run along with another hit and a walk over 0.2 innings in Sunday's 7-3 win over the Giants. He also recorded a strikeoutThe hard-throwing rookie gave up a 377-foot shot to left off the bat of Tim Federowicz, the first batter he faced. Alcantara was able to make up for it in part by ringing up Buster Posey for his first major-league strikeout before exiting a batter later. The 21-year-old right-hander certain brings plenty of firepower, but harnessing it consistently has been an ongoing challenge down at Double-A Springfield. He'll be an intriguing asset to monitor in his first go-around against big-league bats for the balance of September.
Sep 1 2017Alcantara was recalled by the Cardinals on Friday, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Alcantara is set to make his major-league debut in the near future, as he figures to serve out of the bullpen for St. Louis throughout the rest of the season. The 21-year-old could wind up getting an opportunity to start, depending on how the next couple weeks go for the Cardinals, as he's posted a 4.31 ERA and 1.43 WHIP over 125.1 innings, and 22 starts for Double-A Springfield in 2017. But it seems as though the club wants Alcantara in a relief role this September, since they've had him come out of the bullpen during his past three outings in the last week with Springfield.
Jul 24 2017Alcantara fired seven scoreless innings for Double-A Springfield versus Arkansas on Sunday, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out four. The fireballing right-hander has seemingly started to hit his stride in his last three outings, allowing just two runs in the 18.2 innings he's pitched over that span. Sunday's outing was Alcantara's first of more than six innings this season, and the 87 pitches he threw were a testament to his efficiency. While his 4.85 ERA, .270 BAA and 1.45 WHIP all still have ample room for improvement, Alcantara's recent performances certainly provide reason for optimism.
Jun 16 2017Alcantara (3-4) fired six scoreless innings in Double-A Springfield's win over Arkansas on Thursday, allowing two hits and four walks while striking out four. After a rocky beginning to the season, the 21-year-old right-hander has settled down over his last three outings, with Thursday's being his best since his first start of 2017. Alcantara has given up just two earned runs on 11 hits over the 17 innings encompassing that trio of starts, lowering his ERA from 7.09 to 5.48 and his WHIP from 1.64 to 1.48 in the process. The young prospect naturally remains a work in progress, but his recent body of work certainly provides reason for optimism.
May 21 2017Alcantara has a 7.12 ERA over 43 innings across eight starts for Double-A Springfield in 2017, Max Gelman of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports."We've got to be patient with him, said Springfield manager Johnny Rodriguez. "He's learning. The guys are good at this level, Double-A, they'll be better at Triple-A, they're going to hit some pitches that he makes;even when he feels he made it, they still get to it."The 21-year-old right-hander made the leap to Double-A after a combined 23 starts at the Single-A level, so the rocky adjustment period isn't necessarily a total surprise. Alcantara has given up at least six hits in all but one of his eight starts and has already surrendered seven earned runs on two occasions. He has racked up 40 strikeouts and notched a pair of victories, however, so it hasn't all been gloom and doom for the still-promising prospect. Rodriguez emphasizes that Alcantara is trying to work on developing one of the most important but sometimes evasive skills for a young pitcher, namely, a short memory following unfavorable at-bats.
