Jun 26 2025McGuire went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 8-0 win over the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire is making the most out of his playing time as Chicago's backup catcher, as he now has five home runs in only 14 games this season. For comparison, he hit just three long balls last year in 53 games for Boston and only one home run the year before that across 72 games. McGuire will likely be squeezed off the roster when Miguel Amaya (oblique) returns in the coming weeks, but for now, the former remains an intriguing DFS bargain option on days that he's in the lineup.
Jun 22 2025McGuire went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 14-6 loss to the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Starting for a resting Carson Kelly, McGuire continued to serve as a very capable backup catcher. The veteran has gone deep four times already in only 12 games, helping push his OPS to .883. McGuire's career high in home runs is five, which he recorded across 30 games for the Blue Jays back in 2019. He may ultimately get bumped from the roster whenever Miguel Amaya (oblique) is able to return from the injured list, but McGuire is at least providing some short-term fantasy value on days when he's in the lineup.
Jun 13 2025McGuire is starting at catcher and batting ninth in Friday's game against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Carson Kelly, who is mired in a 4-for-37 slump, is getting the Friday afternoon contest off. McGuire has been hot lately, going 5-for-12 with a double and two RBI across his last three games, but he gets a tricky matchup against Pittsburgh ace Paul Skenes.
Jun 10 2025McGuire is starting at catcher and batting ninth in Tuesday's game against the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With regular starter Carson Kelly mired in a 2-for-30 slump, McGuire will get a chance to start behind the plate Tuesday and face Philadelphia righty Mick Abel. McGuire is unlikely to unseat the struggling Kelly entirely, though manager Craig Counsell may look to lighten Kelly's load a bit more in an effort to get his bat hot again. Miguel Amaya (oblique) is also eyeing an early-July return from the injured list and could jump into the No. 1 catcher role when he's healthy.
Jun 5 2025McGuire is starting at catcher and batting ninth in Thursday's game against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire will pick up his first start since Sunday as Carson Kelly gets a breather. McGuire launched two home runs in his first game of the year back on May 25, but he's gone 0-for-9 with three strikeouts across three games since then. The veteran catcher doesn't have a ton of fantasy value as long as Kelly is healthy, and McGuire will likely be moved off the MLB roster entirely whenever Miguel Amaya (oblique) is able to return from the injured list.
May 25 2025McGuire went 2-for-5 with two solo home runs in Sunday's 11-8 win over the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire had his contract selected from Triple-A Iowa earlier in the day to replace Miguel Amaya (oblique) on the roster, and the former wasted no time making a splash with his new team. Carson Kelly, who was scratched Sunday due to an illness, will see the bulk of the playing time behind the plate with Amaya out, but McGuire will mix in here and there. The 30-year-old blasted three home runs and posted a .575 OPS in 53 games for the Red Sox last year, and he has a limited fantasy ceiling in 2025.
Aug 2 2024McGuire cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Worcester by the Red Sox on Friday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire was DFA'd by Boston to make room on the roster for the acquisition of catcher Danny Jansen, but the former will stay within the organization. Before being jettisoned from the 40-man roster, McGuire was slashing .209/.280/.295 with three home runs and 18 RBI across 158 major-league plate appearances this season.
Jul 28 2024The Red Sox designated McGuire for assignment Sunday, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old will be bumped off the 26-man active roster and 40-man roster to make room for trade acquisition Danny Jansen, who will replace McGuire as Boston's new No. 2 catcher. McGuire posted a .209/.280/.295 slash line with three home runs in 52 games for the Red Sox this season.
Jul 14 2024McGuire will start at catcher and bat eighth in Sunday's game against the Royals, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire will be rewarded with a second straight start to close out of the Red Sox's pre-All-Star-break schedule after he went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Saturday's 5-0 win. Though he's delivered two-hit performances in both of his last two starts, McGuire is still the clear No. 2 option at catcher behind Connor Wong, who holds a 204-point edge in OPS (.812 to .608) on the season.
Jun 24 2024McGuire will start at catcher and bat eighth in Monday's game against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire will make the first of what will likely be two or three starts versus Toronto after the Red Sox placed top backstop Connor Wong (personal) on the paternity list Monday. Assuming Wong is away from the Red Sox for the maximum three games, McGuire will presumably move back into the No. 2 role following Thursday's team off day. The Red Sox called up Tyler Heineman from Triple-A Worcester to provide an insurance option at catcher behind McGuire while Wong is on paternity leave.
May 21 2024McGuire went 2-for-3 with a solo home run during Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire went yard in the ninth inning off of Erasmo Ramirez, marking the catchers' third homer of the season and his first since April 7. McGuire has been operating as the backup to Connor Wong in May, and he hasn't shown enough at the plate to warrant more playing time since, batting .214 with Tuesday's long ball being his only extra-base hit during the month.
Apr 24 2024McGuire is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty-hitting McGuire will take a seat against right-hander Carlos Carrasco and looks to have moved into a pure No. 2 role at catcher behind the righty-hitting Connor Wong, after McGuire had previously been occupying the strong side of a platoon. McGuire is on the bench for the third game in a row and for the second straight day against a right-hander, with the downturn in playing time coming while he's batted just .167 over his last nine games.
Apr 19 2024McGuire is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Pirates, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Alex Cora continue to split playing time behind the plate relatively evenly, with Connor Wong receiving the start Friday. McGuire has scuffled offensively over his past six games, going 3-for-16 with six strikeouts.
Apr 17 2024McGuire isn't in Boston's lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire is just 2-for-13 across his last five games, so he'll sit out Wednesday while Connor Wong starts behind the plate and bats sixth.
Apr 14 2024McGuire is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Angels, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty-hitting McGuire will exit the starting nine while the Angels bring southpaw Tyler Anderson to the bump in the series finale. Connor Wong will replace McGuire behind the dish.
Apr 12 2024McGuire isn't in the Red Sox's lineup for Friday's game against the Angels, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With southpaw Reid Detmers on the mound for Los Angeles, the left-handed bat of McGuire will begin Friday's contest in the dugout. Connor Wong will take over behind the plate and bat seventh.
Apr 10 2024McGuire is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty-hitting McGuire will give way to the righty-hitting Connor Wong behind the plate while southpaw Cole Irvin takes the hill for Baltimore. McGuire still appears to have a firm grasp on the primary catching gig when the Red Sox face right-handed pitching; he's slashing .350/.435/.550 over 23 plate appearances versus righties so far this season.
Apr 7 2024McGuire went 2-for-4 with a home run, five RBI, a walk and a stolen base in Sunday's win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire filled the stat sheet Sunday, highlighted by his three-run blast in the sixth inning. He's gone deep twice in the last three games and posted his second multi-hit game of the season. The 29-year-old catcher is slashing .333/.385/.625 with three extra-base hits and eight RBI through nine games.
Apr 6 2024McGuire isn't in the Red Sox's lineup for Saturday's game against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire belted a home run during Friday's win against the Halos and will now sit out the second game of the series. Connor Wong will take over as Boston's backstop and bat eighth.
Apr 3 2024McGuire will be at catcher and bat eighth in Wednesday's game versus the Athletics, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After yielding to Connor Wong in two of the first three games, McGuire has now started three of the last four contests. While it's not surprising Boston's catching situation has been a timeshare, it's a bit of a surprise it has leaned in McGuire's favor thus far. McGuire is off to a 5-for-12 start at the dish.
Mar 17 2024McGuire (illness) is starting behind the plate and batting fifth in Sunday's split-squad game against Atlanta, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old was scratched from Thursday's starting nine due to an illness but will return to action after resting up over the past couple days. McGuire had a .688 OPS in 202 plate appearances last season and is poised to open 2024 as the primary backup to Connor Wong at catcher.
Mar 14 2024McGuire was scratched from the Red Sox's lineup ahead of Thursday's spring training game against the Phillies due to an illness, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire will likely sit out the Red Sox's next few games as he recovers from his illness. The 29-year-old is 4-for-18 with a run scored this spring and appears in line to back up Connor Wong behind the dish this season.
Jan 11 2024McGuire signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Red Sox on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire was the Red Sox's backup catcher for the 2023 season. He posted a modest .668 OPS across 202 plate appearances and figures to serve in the same role while complementing Connor Wong in 2024.
Sep 28 2023McGuire (thumb) was available to play Wednesday, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire injured his thumb while taking warmup pitches prior to the start of the third inning of Tuesday's loss to the Rays. Connor Wong replaced him Tuesday and started Wednesday. Boston manager Alex Cora said McGuire was available off the bench if needed.
Sep 26 2023McGuire was pulled from Tuesday's game against Tampa Bay due to a left thumb contusion, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire injured his thumb while catching warmup throws from Tanner Houck ahead of the third inning and was replaced by Connor Wong. There's no word on how long McGuire will be held out, but Wong figures to see more consistent starts behind the plate while McGuire recovers.
Sep 18 2023McGuire is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He'll give way to Connor Wong behind the dish as Boston opens a three-game set in Texas. McGuire and Wong have been splitting work at catcher in relatively equitable fashion thus far in September, with the former getting seven starts to the latter's 10. With a .154/.241/.231 slash line so far this month, McGuire hasn't made a compelling case to push for a larger share of the playing time.
Aug 1 2023McGuire went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in Tuesday's 6-4 win over the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire missed about six weeks with an oblique injury. He had no trouble getting the ball in the air in his return, popping a solo shot and a sacrifice fly to contribute to the offense. The catcher is slashing a decent .269/.310/.380 with one homer, 13 RBI, 12 runs scored and nine doubles through 41 contests this season. He's likely to remain behind Connor Wong on the depth chart going forward.
Jul 19 2023McGuire (oblique) is aiming to begin a rehab assignment by next Tuesday, Mike Monaco of ESPN reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire has missed nearly a month with a right oblique strain but is making nice progress. Jorge Alfaro has been Boston's backup catcher lately with McGuire out.
Jul 17 2023McGuire (oblique) caught two innings for Corey Kluber on Monday, Mike Monaco of ESPN reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire continues to progress in his recovery from a right oblique strain, and he's likely closing in on a rehab assignment. However, the team has yet to officially disclose when he'll be sent out.
Jul 8 2023McGuire (oblique) began baseball activities July 6, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire has been slow to recover from the oblique injury suffered while taking a swing June 21 against the Twins. These injuries typically take a minimum of two-to-three weeks to heal, but McGuire's will take longer.
Jun 22 2023McGuire was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a right oblique strain, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This move seemed inevitable once McGuire was designated with a strained oblique Wednesday. Caleb Hamilton was added to the roster to serve as Connor Wong's backup while McGuire is sidelined for at least a couple weeks.
Jun 21 2023McGuire was removed from Wednesday's game against the Twins due to a right oblique strain, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Still no word on the severity of McGuire's injury, but manager Alex Cora said a stint on the injured list is likely, per Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican. With McGuire presumably set to miss multiple weeks, the Red Sox could select Caleb Hamilton from Triple-A Worcester to temporarily serve as Connor Wong's backup.
Jun 14 2023McGuire is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though he'll give way to Connor Wong behind the dish, McGuire may be pushing his way into a timeshare at catcher. McGuire had started in three of the past four games and four of the past six, going 2-for-14 with a pair of doubles and two walks during that stretch.
May 28 2023McGuire went 0-for-3 with an RBI in Saturday's 2-1 win over Arizona. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Red Sox played small ball, as McGuire laid down a one-out bunt that plated Triston Casas from third base for the game-winning run. The backup catcher is going through a tough stretch, batting .136 (3-for-22) with a 39.1 percent strikeout rate over the last nine games. Despite the downturn, McGuire maintains a respectable .286 average for the season.
Apr 5 2023McGuire is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Pirates, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Even with the Pirates bringing a right-hander (Mitch Keller) to the hill for the series finale, the lefty-hitting McGuire will find himself on the bench for the third time in four games while the righty-hitting Connor Wong gets another turn behind the dish. McGuire remains atop the depth chart at catcher for now, but he may be Option 1A rather than a clear-cut starter or even a strong-side platoon option at the position.
Apr 3 2023McGuire is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire was on the bench for Sunday's series finale with the Orioles in what was believed to be a routine maintenance day, but he'll end up taking a seat for the second straight contest as Boston opens a six-game week. Connor Wong will get another turn behind the dish Monday, though McGuire still appears to be viewed as the team's top backstop.
Apr 2 2023McGuire is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Orioles, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire will get a day off for the first time in the young season after he started behind the plate in both of Boston's first two games while going 1-for-6 at the dish. The Orioles were successful on 10 of 10 stolen base attempts off McGuire, while the staff ERA was 9.00. Connor Wong will catch for starting pitcher Tanner Houck in the series finale.
Mar 19 2023McGuire went 0-for-3 in Saturday's spring game against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Connor Wong (hamstring) unlikely to be ready by Opening Day, McGuire and Jorge Alfaro are expected to open the regular season as Boston's catchers. McGuire, who is 6-for-26 (.231) over 11 Grapefruit League games, should be the primary backstop.
Jan 13 2023McGuire agreed to a one-year, $1.225 million contract with the Red Sox in January of 2023 to avoid arbitration, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire played in a career-high 89 games between the White Sox and Red Sox last season and had a .269/.307/.369 slash line. The 27-year-old hit especially well in 36 contests for Boston with an .877 OPS, and he currently projects to split catching duties with Connor Wong in 2023.
Oct 1 2022McGuire isn't starting Saturday against Toronto, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire has alternated starts behind the plate recently and will get a breather for Saturday's matchup. Connor Wong is starting at catcher and batting ninth.
Sep 26 2022McGuire will start at catcher and bat eighth in Monday's game against the Orioles, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire will be behind the plate for the third time in four games after going 8-for-21 with three home runs and a double across his seven appearances (five starts). He appears to have at least temporarily supplanted the slumping Connor Wong as the Red Sox's preferred option at catcher.
Sep 23 2022McGuire went 1-for-2 with a three-run home run in Thursday's loss against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire blasted a go-ahead homer off righty reliever Clarke Schmidt with nobody out in the seventh inning. In his last five games, the catcher has recorded seven hits with two homers and a double over 14 at-bats. Since 2020, the 27-year-old has posted a poor .423 OPS over 102 plate appearances against left-handed pitching compared to a .683 OPS over 409 plate appearances facing righties.
Sep 13 2022McGuire went 2-for-3 with a solo homer in Tuesday's extra-inning loss to the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The backup catcher had a big day at the plate Tuesday, launching his first home run of the season, a shot to right against Yankees' ace Gerrit Cole. McGuire also singled in the seventh inning, earning him his first multi-hit game since Aug. 25. He is slashing .269/.306/.347 through 246 plate appearances this season.
Sep 10 2022McGuire isn't in the lineup Saturday against Baltimore. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire has lost out on playing time recently and will head to the bench for the fifth time in the last six games. Kevin Plawecki is starting behind the plate and batting ninth.
Sep 9 2022McGuire is not in the starting lineup Friday against the Orioles, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire will take a seat for a second straight game Friday. Connor Wong will take over behind the plate and bat ninth versus Baltimore.
Sep 7 2022McGuire isn't in the lineup Wednesday against the Rays, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire went 1-for-2 with a run and a walk Tuesday against Tampa Bay but will head to the bench for the third time in the last four games. Connor Wong is starting at catcher and batting ninth.
Sep 5 2022McGuire will sit Monday versus the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire will take a seat for a second game in a row Monday as the Red Sox start their three-game series with the Rays. Kevin Plawecki will step in behind the dish Monday and is part of what's become a three-way timeshare at catcher with Boston bringing up Connor Wong from Triple-A Worcester as one of its September call-ups.
Sep 4 2022McGuire is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rangers, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire went 0-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and two strikeouts Saturday and will take a seat Sunday for the second time in the past three games. Connor Wong will work behind the plate in the series finale and bat ninth.
Sep 2 2022McGuire will sit Friday against Texas, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire started five out of seven games from Aug. 24 through Aug. 30, going 8-for-19 at the plate and seemingly solidifying himself as Boston's primary catcher. He's now been on the bench for three straight games, however, with Connor Wong getting the nod behind the plate Friday after Kevin Plawecki started the previous two contests.
Sep 1 2022McGuire isn't starting Thursday against the Rangers, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire has recorded hits in each of his last five games but will head to the bench for a second consecutive matchup. Kevin Plawecki is starting behind the plate and batting ninth.
Aug 31 2022McGuire is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire will give way to Kevin Plawecki behind the plate after catching in each of Boston's last three games. Though the playing time has tilted in McGuire's favor of late, manager Alex Cora has yet to commit to the 27-year-old as the Red Sox's clear No. 1 catcher.
Aug 30 2022McGuire will start at catcher and bat ninth in Tuesday's game against the Twins, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire has been on the bench for stretches of two and three straight contests over the past couple weeks, but he'll be picking up his third consecutive turn behind the dish Tuesday. The playing-time situation at catcher remains a difficult one to predict, but McGuire looks to have the edge over Kevin Plawecki at the moment.
Aug 23 2022McGuire is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire looks to have moved back into the No. 2 catcher role, as he'll be on the bench for the third straight game while Kevin Plawecki picks up another turn behind the plate. Though he's gotten off to a hot start offensively since being acquired from the White Sox on Aug. 2 -- McGuire is hitting .375 with four runs and three RBI in 11 games -- his track record at the big-league level suggests he's unlikely to be much of a fantasy asset if he eventually supplants Plawecki as the No. 1 option.
Aug 21 2022McGuire is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Orioles, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a string of four consecutive starts behind the plate, McGuire now finds himself on the bench for the second day in a row. He still looks to be part of a timeshare behind the dish with Kevin Plawecki, who is being rewarded with another start after going 2-for-4 with a run in Saturday's 4-3 win.
Aug 20 2022McGuire is not in Saturday's lineup against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He has seemingly passed Kevin Plawecki as Boston's top catcher, but Plawecki is behind the dish and hitting ninth in this one. McGuire is hitting .375 with zero home runs in 10 games this month.
Aug 18 2022McGuire will start at catcher and bat seventh in Thursday's game against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire is drawing his third consecutive start and appears to have leapfrogged Kevin Plawecki on the depth chart at catcher. Regarded as a solid defender and pitch framer, McGuire has added to his value by producing an .847 OPS in his first eight games with Boston since coming over in a deadline deal with the White Sox. Once his bat predictably cools down, McGuire could fall back into more of a timeshare with Plawecki.
Aug 17 2022McGuire will start at catcher and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Pirates, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire will check in behind the plate for the second day in a row and appears to have at least worked his way into a timeshare at catcher with Kevin Plawecki. Since arriving at the Aug. 2 trade deadline in a deal with the White Sox, McGuire has been a pleasant surprise as a hitter with a .409 average through his first 22 at-bats with Boston, but he'll bring most of his value on the defensive end moving forward.
Aug 1 2022McGuire was traded to the Red Sox from the White Sox on Monday in exchange for pitcher Jake Diekman, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Red Sox need catching depth after trading long-time backstop Christian Vazquez, and they decided to bring McGuire into the fold. As things stand, expect McGuire and Kevin Plawecki to share the work behind the plate for Boston.
Jul 6 2022McGuire is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Twins, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Even after producing a season-high-tying three hits in his four plate appearances during Tuesday's 8-2 loss, McGuire will take a seat for the day game after a night game. He's now been benched four times in five games, as Seby Zavala has seemingly overtaken McGuire as Chicago's preferred option behind the plate.
Jul 3 2022McGuire is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire will take a seat for the second game in a row while Seby Zavala gets another turn behind the dish. The two backstops may end up splitting starting opportunities in relatively even fashion until Yasmani Grandal (back) comes off the injured list.
Jun 27 2022McGuire isn't starting Monday's game against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire started in two consecutive games during the White Sox's weekend series against the Orioles but went 0-for-4. He'll be on the bench for a second consecutive matchup while Seby Zavala starts behind the plate and bats seventh.
Jun 26 2022McGuire is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though he'll take a seat for the series finale, McGuire seems to have supplanted Seby Zavala as the White Sox's preferred option behind the dish while No. 1 backstop Yasmani Grandal (back) remains on the injured list. McGuire started at catcher in three of Chicago's previous four games.
Jun 23 2022McGuire is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chicago's catching situation has been tough to pin down of late. After McGuire made three consecutive starts behind the plate from June 12 through 14, Seby Zavala caught each of the team's next three contests. McGuire then caught three of the White Sox's four games since Sunday, but he'll be back on the bench for Thursday's series opener in favor of Zavala. Though McGuire represents the superior defender of the two, Zavala has thus far showed a more potent bat in a limited sample of MLB action.
Jun 20 2022McGuire went 1-for-3 with a walk and a double Sunday against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire was in the lineup for the first time in the White Sox's last three games, previously giving way to Seby Zavala. He responded to the opportunity with a one-out double in the second inning, but he was ultimately stranded there. McGuire has a modest five-game hitting streak and has also tallied three doubles in that span, so it's possible he begins to reclaim playing time with Yasmani Grandal (back) sidelined.
Jun 18 2022McGuire isn't starting Friday against Houston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire will be out of the lineup for a third consecutive matchup after he went 4-for-12 with two doubles, four runs, a walk and three strikeouts over his last four games. Seby Zavala will start behind the dish and bat eighth.
Jun 17 2022McGuire isn't in the lineup for Friday's game against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire went 4-for-12 with a double, four runs, a walk and three strikeouts over his last four games but will be out of the lineup for a second consecutive matchup. Seby Zavala is starting behind the dish and batting eighth.
Jun 15 2022McGuire is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire will take a seat for the day game after he went 1-for-4 while playing all nine innings behind the dish in Tuesday's 5-1 win. Seby Zavala will catch for starting pitcher Vince Velasquez in Wednesday's series finale, but McGuire still looks to be locked in as Chicago's No. 1 backstop while Yasmani Grandal (back) is on the injured list.
Jun 14 2022McGuire went 1-for-4 with a double and two runs scored Monday against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire has the opportunity to serve as the top catcher for the White Sox after Yasmani Grandal (back) was placed on the injured list Monday. McGuire made a good first impression in the role, as he collected a leadoff double in the fifth inning and came around to score. He may be able to provide a decent batting average with the increased playing time, but McGuire has only six extra-base hits across 115 plate appearances on the season.
Jun 13 2022McGuire will start at catcher and bat eighth in Monday's game against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Yasmani Grandal (back/hamstring) landing on the 10-day injured list Monday, McGuire appears set to temporarily take over as the White Sox's No. 1 backstop. McGuire had already seen extensive action behind Grandal this season, but he's a defensive-first catcher who offers little in the way of offensive upside. Through 110 plate appearances this season, McGuire is hitting .235/.280/.286 with zero home runs or stolen bases, 10 runs and eight RBI.
Jun 8 2022McGuire is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire will head to the bench after he went 7-for-25 with two runs and two RBI while starting at catcher or designated hitter in seven of the White Sox's last eight games. Yasmani Grandal remains Chicago's No. 1 catcher and will be back behind the plate Wednesday, but McGuire should continue to see more usage than most backup backstops around the league.
Jun 1 2022McGuire will start at catcher and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He'll be rewarded with his third start in a row after going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a run and an RBI in Tuesday's 6-5 win. Yasmani Grandal is in a 1-for-24 slump at the plate over his last six games and will take a seat Wednesday, but he still looks to be entrenched as Chicago's No. 1 catcher.
May 9 2022McGuire will start at catcher and bat eighth in Monday's game against the Guardians, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Injuries to Andrew Vaughn (hand) and Eloy Jimenez (hamstring) have prompted White Sox manager Tony La Russa to deploy Yasmani Grandal as a designated hitter more frequently of late, and McGuire has been one of the primary beneficiaries. McGuire will be catching for the third time in four games and the sixth time in nine contests. Despite playing more frequently than the typical No. 2 catcher, McGuire's paltry .354 OPS on the season has made it tough to wring much fantasy value from him, even in AL-only leagues.
May 3 2022McGuire went 1-for-3 with an RBI on Tuesday against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire has seen an uptick in playing time of late as Yasmani Grandal has regularly served as the designated hitter due to leg soreness. McGuire had failed to take advantage of the increased opportunity, as he entered Tuesday's action with zero hits across his last 13 at-bats. However, he chipped in with an RBI on a sacrifice bunt in the second frame, and he reached base on an infield single in the ninth inning. McGuire is a defense-first catcher, but he could remain in line for more playing time so long as the team looks to lighten Grandal's workload.
Apr 16 2022McGuire is starting Saturday's game against the Rays, Vinnie Duber of NBC Sports Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old was traded from the Blue Jays to the White Sox prior to the regular season, and he's had sporadic playing time while playing behind Yasmani Grandal. McGuire has gone 2-for-9 with a run, a walk and three strikeouts in three appearances this year, and he'll start behind the dish Saturday while Grandal serves as the designated hitter.
Apr 3 2022The White Sox acquired McGuire from the Blue Jays on Sunday in exchange for catcher Zack Collins, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire was expected to begin the season as Toronto's No. 3 catcher behind Danny Jansen and Alejandro Kirk, but he should have a better chance at moving up a spot on the depth chart as he heads to Chicago. Yasmani Grandal will operate as the clear No. 1 backstop for Chicago, but McGuire could pick up at least a start or two per week when Grandal is resting or serving as a designated hitter or first baseman. McGuire owns an unremarkable .687 OPS over 400 career MLB plate appearances and likely wouldn't have much fantasy appeal outside of leagues that start two catchers if Grandal were to miss extended time for some reason in 2022.
Apr 2 2022McGuire will likely begin the season on the big-league roster, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old catcher is out of minor-league options and sits third on the depth chart behind Danny Jansen and Alejandro Kirk, but the decision to allow 28-man rosters through April gives McGuire a reprieve for now and saves him from being placed on waivers. He's gone 2-for-20 (.100) this spring with zero extra-base hits and 0:4 BB:K.
Sep 1 2021McGuire remains out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: On the bench for the fourth time in five games, McGuire looks to be the No. 3 option on the depth chart at catcher behind Danny Jansen and Alejandro Kirk, in some order. None of the three backstops has performed well enough to truly run away with the No. 1 role, but McGuire is still expected to see the fewest opportunities among the trio in September.
Aug 28 2021McGuire isn't in the lineup Saturday against Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire started each of the last two games and went 2-for-7 with a run and three strikeouts. Alejandro Kirk will start behind the dish and bat fourth.
Aug 25 2021McGuire isn't starting Wednesday's game against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire went 2-for-3 with a double in his last appearance, but he'll be out of the lineup for the third time in the last four games. Alejandro Kirk will start at catcher and bat sixth.
Aug 24 2021McGuire will be on the bench for Tuesday's game against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire and Alejandro Kirk have alternated starts behind plate over the last six games. Kirk starts there Tuesday, but McGuire should return to the lineup Wednesday if the pattern holds.
Aug 22 2021McGuire is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With three starts in the Blue Jays' previous four games, McGuire still appears to hold an edge over Alejandro Kirk as the team's No. 1 catcher. He'll be rested for Sunday's matinee game, however, paving the way for Kirk to form a battery with starting pitcher Steven Matz.
Aug 20 2021McGuire is not starting Friday against the TIgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire will take a seat to begin the series in Toronto after starting three of the previous four games behind the plate. Alejandro Kirk will catch Robbie Ray and bat sixth.
Aug 18 2021McGuire will start at catcher and bat eighth Wednesday against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In the lineup for the third time in four games, McGuire seems to have eclipsed Alejandro Kirk as the Blue Jays' No. 1 catcher -- at least for the time being. Given that McGuire has gone 1-for-20 at the dish since Aug. 5, he won't have a long leash atop the depth chart if he fails to break out of his slump.
Aug 11 2021McGuire is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire took a seat for Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader after starting the matinee, and he'll sit for the second straight contest Wednesday. Alejandro Kirk will work behind the plate for Toronto.
Aug 10 2021McGuire is out of the lineup for Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire started the matinee and went 0-for-1 with a pair of walks, and it's no surprise he won't be starting both games of the twin bill. Alejandro Kirk will work behind the plate in the nightcap.
Aug 7 2021McGuire isn't starting the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against Boston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire was out of the lineup in Friday's series opener, and he'll remain on the bench in Saturday's matinee. Alejandro Kirk will start at catcher and bat seventh.
Aug 6 2021McGuire is not in the lineup Friday against the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire started the past three games and appears to have taken over the starting job at catcher, but he'll receive Friday off. Alejandro Kirk will work behind the plate in his place.
Aug 4 2021McGuire will start at catcher and bat ninth Wednesday against Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He'll find himself in the lineup for the third time in four games, with each of those starts coming against right-handed pitching. For the time being, McGuire appears to have the edge over Alejandro Kirk on Toronto's No. 1 catcher role.
Jul 29 2021McGuire went 3-for-5 with a trio of doubles and an RBI in Thursday's win over the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hitting out of the No. 9 hole in the Toronto lineup, McGuire doubled off three different Boston pitchers and drove in a run with his ground-rule two-bagger in the sixth inning. With Danny Jansen (hamstring) on the shelf for the second time this season, McGuire is splitting playing time behind the plate with rookie Alejandro Kirk and has responded by hitting .284 in 143 plate appearances on the year.
Jul 21 2021McGuire is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire was scheduled for a day off Tuesday before the contest was postponed, and manager Charlie Montoyo will stick with the same order Wednesday. Danny Jansen will work behind the plate and bat ninth for Toronto.
Jul 20 2021McGuire will be on the bench Tuesday against the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire may be moving slightly ahead of Danny Jansen on the Blue Jays' catcher depth chart, as he'd started three of the first four games of the second half. Jansen gets the nod behind the plate Tuesday, catching Thomas Hatch.
Jul 18 2021McGuire is not starting Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: An .095 hitter against left-handed pitching, McGuire takes a seat as the Blue Jays match up against southpaw Kolby Allard. Danny Jansen will catch and bat ninth, with McGuire likely returning to the lineup Sunday evening.
Jul 17 2021McGuire is not starting Saturday's game against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire went 1-for-4 and scored a run Friday. The 26-year-old is hitting a lowly .095 off left-handed pitching this season, so he understandably gets a day off against southpaw Kolby Allard. Danny Jansen starts behind the dish and bats ninth Saturday.
Jul 11 2021McGuire is not starting Sunday against Tampa Bay. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire is out of the starting for the second straight game despite hitting a double off the bench Saturday. McGuire has just two hits in his last 20 at-bats, so it wouldn't be surprising if Sunday's starting backstop Danny Jansen is given increased time behind the plate following the All-Star break.
Jul 10 2021McGuire is not starting Saturday's game against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire's bat appears to have cooled off again, as he's gone 1-for-17 with no walks since the start of July. Interestingly, his offensive drop-off has coincided with Danny Jansen's return from the injured list July 3. McGuire was recently named the starting catcher over the light-hitting Jansen, but the latter is starting Saturday and may reclaim the role if he enjoys some success at the plate.
Jul 7 2021McGuire isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire has gone 0-for-8 with three strikeouts across his last three appearances, and he'll be out of the lineup for the second time in the last three games. Danny Jansen will start at catcher and bat ninth.
Jul 4 2021McGuire is not starting Sunday's series finale against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Even after going 0-for-3 with a strikeout Saturday, McGuire is still hitting .400 in his last 15 games. Danny Jansen returned from the injured list Saturday and is starting at catcher Sunday, but manager Charlie Montoyo has stated that McGuire and his hot bat will remain the primary backstop for now.
Jun 30 2021McGuire is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire started the past five games and will receive a day off after going 7-for-18 with two walks and five runs. Riley Adams will take over behind the plate for the Blue Jays.
Jun 25 2021McGuire went 3-for-4 with a run scored in Thursday's win over the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's the third time in his last five starts McGuire has rapped out at least three hits as he continues to thrive in a starting role while Danny Jansen (hamstring) is sidelined. The hot streak has added 120 points to McGuire's batting average on the season, boosting his slash line to .324/.367/.459 through 80 plate appearances.
Jun 23 2021McGuire is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty-hitting McGuire will retreat to the bench with southpaw Trevor Rogers on the hill for Miami. Riley Adams, a right-handed hitter, will serve as Toronto's catcher while batting eighth.
Jun 20 2021McGuire went 4-for-5 with three doubles, two runs, two RBI and a strikeout in Sunday's 7-4 win over the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts Saturday, but he had little trouble reaching base in his first four-hit performance of the season Sunday. Across his last seven games, the 26-year-old has hit .421 with a home run, five doubles, five runs, four RBI, a walk and six strikeouts.
Jun 18 2021McGuire is not in the lineup Friday against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire started the past two games and will head to the bench after going 3-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored Thursday against the Yankees. Riley Adams will start in his place in Baltimore.
Jun 13 2021McGuire is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire will head to the bench after catching in both of the Blue Jays' last two games while going 2-for-6 with a solo home run, a double and three runs. Riley Adams will be behind the plate Sunday, but McGuire looks like Toronto's clear No. 1 backstop for the time being.
Jun 10 2021McGuire is not in the lineup Thursday against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 26-year-old is 2-for-15 over his past five games and will sit for the second time in the last three contests. Riley Adams will start behind the plate Thursday, and he and McGuire should continue splitting time with Danny Jansen (hamstring) recently placed on the injured list.
Jun 8 2021McGuire is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire had been splitting time behind the plate with Danny Jansen, who landed on the injured list with a hamstring strain Tuesday. The newly-promoted Riley Adams will start Tuesday in his big-league debut. McGuire bats left-handed while Adams hits right-handed, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see Adams starting against southpaws like Tuesday's starter Carlos Rodon going forward.
Jun 6 2021McGuire is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Danny Jansen will be behind the dish in the series finale, McGuire may have supplanted him as the team's preferred backstop for the time being. McGuire caught four of the previous six games, and his .542 OPS -- while poor -- is still 38 points better than Jansen's own mark over a larger sample of plate appearances. At the very least, a timeshare between the two catchers could be in place until one of the two dramatically separates himself from the other from a performance standpoint.
May 5 2021McGuire had his contract selected by the Blue Jays on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 26-year-old was designated for assignment by Toronto after failing to make the Opening Day roster, but he'll join the club with Alejandro Kirk set to miss significant time with a hip injury. Danny Jansen should work as the Blue Jays' top catcher. but McGuire will see occasional opportunities and could carve out a bigger role if Jansen continues to struggle offensively.
Mar 31 2021The Blue Jays are expected to designate McGuire for assignment prior to Opening Day, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire's fate was sealed after the Blue Jays informed Alejandro Kirk earlier this week that he would be included on the Opening Day roster as the No. 2 catcher behind Danny Jansen. Since the Blue Jays prefer to use their 26th and final active roster spot on a pitcher rather than a third catcher, McGuire -- who has no minor-league options remaining -- will likely be cast off the 40-man roster and exposed to waivers. The 26-year-old could have some appeal to other organizations who aren't satisfied with their current No. 2 options at catcher heading into Opening Day.
Sep 29 2020McGuire will be on the Blue Jays' roster for the AL Wild Card Round against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire is likely to be little more than an insurance policy, as he'll be the third catcher behind Danny Jansen and Alejandro Kirk. The Blue Jays will likely be hoping he doesn't have to see the field, as he hit just .073/.073/.146 in 45 plate appearances this season.
Sep 5 2020McGuire was optioned to the Blue Jays' alternate training site Saturday, Mike Wilner of Sportsnet 590 The Fan reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire will remain with the taxi squad for the team's road trip, so he could be available in an emergency situation. The 25-year-old saw limited time behind the plate during his time on the major-league roster and hit .073 with a solo home run and 11 strikeouts over 41 at-bats. Caleb Joseph's contract was selected in a corresponding move, and he should serve as the backup catcher going forward.
Aug 19 2020McGuire will start at catcher and bat ninth Wednesday against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Danny Jansen is hitting .170 on the season, he remains locked in as the Blue Jays' top backstop and will head to the bench for just the sixth time to open up a start for McGuire. Since slugging a solo home run in his season debut July 25, McGuire has recorded one hit (a single) in 13 at-bats.
Jul 25 2020McGuire went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's loss to Tampa Bay. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire produced the only run of the game for Toronto with a solo shot to right field in the seventh inning. He looks to be in a timeshare with Danny Jansen to begin the season, though either player could seize a full-time role with a strong start to the campaign.
Jul 7 2020McGuire pleaded no contest last week to a disorderly conduct charge and was fined $500 stemming from an off-field incident in February, The Canadian Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With his legal issues settled, McGuire can focus on getting ready for the season. There's still a chance he'll face additional discipline from the Jays or the league, but given that the incident was more personally embarrassing than anything else, this will likely be the end of it. McGuire is expected to back up Danny Jansen behind the plate for Toronto.
May 2 2020McGuire's court date in Clearwater has been postponed to June 25, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The catcher was originally scheduled to appear in a Pinellas County courtroom March 16 regarding his misdemeanor charge of exposure, but the hearing has been postponed twice due to the coronavirus pandemic. There's been no indication McGuire is facing additional league discipline due to the February incident, so it's likely his legal issues won't impact his availability once baseball is ready to resume play. The 25-year-old is expected to work in a timeshare behind the plate with Danny Jansen this season, although McGuire is more likely to be on the short end of it.
Mar 20 2020McGuire is set to begin the season in a time share with Danny Jansen behind the plate. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While the Jays have given no official indication that either catcher would handle a lead role in that arrangement, all signs point to Jansen being the de facto No. 1. In addition to McGuire's own off-field legal issues, Jansen had been on fire at the plate when the Grapefruit League schedule was put on pause, leading the circuit with a 1.953 OPS through 20 plate appearances compared to McGuire's paltry .638 OPS in 21 PAs. On the bright side, McGuire's spot in the majors seems secure -- the organization has no other catchers on the 40-man roster, and top prospects like Alejandro Kirk are still in the low minors.
Feb 12 2020McGuire was arrested last weekend for the exposure of sexual organs and given notice to appear in court March 16 in Clearwater, Florida, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The team issued a statement Wednesday morning saying, "The Toronto Blue Jays are aware of the recent police incident involving catcher Reese McGuire. He has been in communication with the Blue Jays and we are working to gather more information. Out of respect for the legal process, neither he nor the club will comment any further at this time." McGuire is expected to compete with Danny Jansen for the primary catcher role in spring training.
Sep 29 2019McGuire is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rays, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire finds himself on the bench for a second consecutive game despite having an .845 OPS in 15 appearances during September. Luke Maile will start behind the plate in the season finale.
Sep 25 2019McGuire will be on the bench Wednesday against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire owns a strong .920 OPS in the month of September. The 24-year-old has only received 134 career big-league plate appearances, but his .306/.353/.556 slash line is quite strong. Luke Maile will be the catcher on this occasion.
Sep 23 2019McGuire is not in the lineup Monday against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire is enjoying a nice month at the plate, slashing .342/.432/.526 with a home run, four doubles and a 6:8 BB:K through 12 games. Danny Jansen is starting behind the dish in this one.
Sep 17 2019McGuire will hit the bench Tuesday in Baltimore. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: McGuire has seemingly moved ahead of Danny Jansen on the depth chart behind the plate, starting three of the last four games prior to Tuesday's contest. Jansen will start on this occasion.
Aug 30 2019McGuire went 3-for-3 with a solo homer and two RBI in Friday's loss to Houston.
Aug 17 2019McGuire went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in a 4-3 loss to the Mariners on Saturday.
Aug 12 2019Manager Charlie Montoyo said McGuire will split time at catcher with Danny Jansen down the stretch, Scott Mitchell of TSN.ca reports.
Aug 9 2019McGuire went 4-for-4 with a double, a solo home run and two additional runs scored in Thursday's loss to the Yankees.
Jul 27 2019McGuire was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Saturday, Scott Mitchell of TSN.ca reports.

Nov 20 2017McGuire was added to Toronto's 40-man roster Monday.McGuire missed much of the 2017 season rehabbing from knee surgery, but managed to play 34 games at Double-A New Hampshire. Over the aforementioned outings he slashed a solid .278/.366/.496 and slugged six home runs. By being added to the 40-man roster, McGuire will be protected from the Rule 5 draft.
Aug 4 2017McGuire wrapped up his rehab assignment and rejoined Double-A New Hampshire on Friday, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.McGuire was hitting just .216 with 11 strikeouts through 16 games at Double-A before suffering a knee injury in early May. The catcher took little more than a month off following surgery before appearing in 11 rehab games (12-for-34). McGuire has yet to blossom with the Jays organization since coming over from Pittsburgh in last year's trade, and there's only a month remaining before the Fisher Cats season ends.
Jul 22 2017McGuire (knee) was removed from Double-A New Hampshire's disabled list to begin a rehab assignment at the Jays complex in Dunedin. The catcher had surgery in late May to repair a meniscus tear in his right knee. McGuire, 22, scorched an RBI double during his first rehab game Friday in the Gulf Coast League. A first-round pick in 2013 by the Pirates, McGuire has yet to break through offensively over 370 career at-bats in Double-A (.249), but he's still considered one of the organization's top catching prospects.
May 25 2017McGuire underwent successful arthroscopic surgery for a meniscus tear in his right knee, John Lott of The Athletic Toronto reports. This explains why McGuire was on the disabled list with Double-A New Hampshire. He'll head to Dunedin to rehab for the time being, and while the Blue Jays expect McGuire back this season, they have yet to put a timetable on his return.
