Aug 26 2024The White Sox designated Senzel for assignment Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel signed with the White Sox in mid-July after being released by the Nationals, but he went just 3-for-30 in 10 games for Chicago and had been playing sparingly of late. The 29-year-old will likely clear waivers just as he did last month.
Aug 7 2024Senzel is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel looked as though he might move into a more prominent role for the White Sox in the aftermath of last Tuesday's trade deadline, but he's started in only four of the ensuing eight games since the deadline. Though Paul DeJong is now out of the White Sox's infield mix, the club has prioritized Lenyn Sosa over Senzel for the open spot in the infield. Senzel hasn't helped his case for earning playing time by going 3-for-27 with seven strikeouts since signing with the White Sox over the All-Star break.
Jul 22 2024Senzel is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After signing with the White Sox over the All-Star break, Senzel has now hit the bench for two of the team's first four games of the second half, with both of his absences coming against right-handed pitching. Senzel has gone hitless in his first seven at-bats with Chicago and looks like he could be a lesser priority than Brooks Baldwin, Paul DeJong and Nicky Lopez in the infield.
Jul 20 2024Senzel is not in the starting lineup against the Royals on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel will head to the bench after he went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in Friday's 7-1 loss. Paul DeJong will slide over to third base while Nicky Lopez enters the lineup at shortstop and bats seventh versus Kansas City.
Jul 18 2024Senzel is in line to serve as the White Sox's primary second baseman for the second half of the season, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel hasn't played second base at all in 2024 and has just 16 games (seven starts) under his belt at the position in the majors. However, the keystone is reportedly where the White Sox intend to use him most days after signing him to a one-year contract following his release from the Nationals. Senzel's positional situation should ultimately be fluid, and he's not guaranteed regular playing time if he doesn't perform.
Jul 16 2024Senzel agreed to a contract with the White Sox on Tuesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Per James Fegan of SoxMachine.com, the agreement is for a major-league contract. Senzel spent most of the first half of the campaign with Washington, slashing .209/.359/.662 with seven home runs, 18 RBI, 25 runs and one stolen base before he was designated for assignment July 6. He played exclusively at third base with the Nationals but had previously spent the majority of his big-league time in the outfield.
Jul 12 2024The Nationals requested unconditional release waivers Friday on Senzel. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The move hardly comes as a surprise after Washington designated Senzel for assignment last weekend. The 29-year-old posted a .209/.303/.359 slash line in 64 games with the Nationals and will now look to latch on elsewhere for the second half, though he may need to settle for a minor-league contract.
Oct 1 2023Senzel went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Saturday's 15-6 loss to St. Louis. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Per usual, Senzel got the start with a left-hander on the bump for the Cardinals. His fifth-inning home run meant little to the Reds, who were down 11-2 after the blast and were eliminated from the playoff chase with the loss. The home run was his career-high 13th. At 29-years-old, the once-promising prospect fell behind a class of younger talent that emerged in 2023. Senzel, who was shopped at the trade deadline, per Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer, enters an awkward offseason as an obvious trade candidate. He'll also be a third-year arbitration eligible player, which means other teams could hold off on trading for him, hoping to get him at a lesser price as a free agent if the Reds non-tender him.
Sep 18 2023Senzel went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's 8-4 loss to the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel has seen an uptick in plate appearances of late, as Reds manager David Bell gets him into contests whenever a lefty is throwing -- be that a starter or reliever. He's started four of the last six and entered as a pinch hitter in the two games he did not start. The infielder/outfielder has responded well to the increased usage, posting a .391/.391/.696 slash line with two home runs over the last eight games.
Sep 8 2023Senzel went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Friday's 9-4 loss against St. Louis. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel hit a 408-foot blast off Drew Rom in the third inning for his 11th home run on the year. The five-year veteran saw his first start since Sept. 1 on Friday night as he has struggled to find playing time since Harrison Bader and Hunter Renfroe joined the Reds via waivers. Not that Senzel has deserved much more playing time, as he is now slashing .223/.291/.383 over 264 at-bats in 89 games.
Aug 30 2023Senzel will start in left field and bat sixth in Wednesday's game against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel will stick in the lineup for the third game in a row, with all of his starts coming out of the corner outfield. His brief run as a regular in the Cincinnati outfield could come to an end as soon as Friday, when the Reds are likely to get Jake Fraley (toe) back from the 10-day injured list.
Aug 25 2023Senzel went 1-for-2 with a solo home run Thursday in a loss to the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was called up from Triple-A Louisville on Thursday afternoon and made an impact in his first game back in the majors, tying the score 1-1 with his eighth-inning solo shot. That at-bat came as a pinch hitter for Nick Martini, who started the game at DH. Senzel appears unlikely to play on an everyday basis, though he could force his way into the lineup if he's able to build upon Thursday's effort and turn around what has been a mostly forgettable campaign thus far.
Aug 24 2023Cincinnati recalled Senzel from Triple-A Louisville on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel has posted underwhelming numbers between the majors and minors this year, but the Reds need him as position player depth after losing Joey Votto (shoulder) to the injured list. The 28-year-old former top prospect seems doubtful to deliver meaningful fantasy production.
Aug 11 2023Senzel was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He had been starting at third base roughly two-thirds of the time lately, but the Reds will select Henry Ramos' contract to take Senzel's place on the active roster. On the season, the 28-year-old has been worth -0.6 fWAR while slashing .219/.290/.368 with nine home runs and five steals in 80 games.
Aug 7 2023Senzel is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Senzel finds himself on the bench for the series opener with Miami, he started in five of the Reds' first six games of August and went 3-for-20 with a solo home run. With Jake Fraley (toe) recently joining Jonathan India (foot) on the injured list, Senzel could be in store for a near-everyday role in the short term.
Aug 5 2023Senzel went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Friday's 6-3 extra-inning loss to the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As usual, Senzel got the start against a left-hander, Patrick Corbin, and he delivered immediately with the first of back-to-back homers in the first inning. He later had a chance to walk off the Nats with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth inning, but his weak liner against right-hander Andres Machado was caught and the teams moved onto the 10th inning. Senzel is typically pinch hit for late in games when facing a right-hander, against whom he is batting just .180 this season, but no left-handed bat was available off the bench at that time. Jake Fraley (undisclosed) was unavailable, while Will Benson and TJ Friedl had already entered the game.
Aug 3 2023Senzel started at third base and went 0-for-4 with three errors in Wednesday's 16-6 loss to the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel's usage has picked up recently as a result of Jonathan India (foot) landing on the injured list, as Senzel, presumed to be a trade chip at the deadline, remained with the Reds. The influx of youth has marginalized Senzel, who told Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer that he loves the organization but would like more playing time, something that could have occurred had he been traded. "I'm at a different point in my career than the younger guys we have on our team because I'm getting paid year-to-year now," Senzel said, referring to the two more years under club control. "With that, I need at-bats; I need the innings; I need the games played." Senzel is slashing .231/.306/.376 over 248 plate appearances.
Jul 30 2023Senzel was a late addition to the starting lineup in left field and went 0-for-2 in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was added to the lineup after Jonathan India (heel) was scratched. Spencer Steer was slated to start in left, but he was moved to third base as part of a lineup reshuffle to accommodate India's absence. The Reds await results of an MRI on India's injury, which could impact Senzel's usage.
Jul 24 2023Senzel went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 7-3 win over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel. who made just his second start since the All-Star break, extended the Reds early lead to 3-0 with his two-run shot in the bottom of the second inning. The home run was the eighth for Senzel, whose plate appearances have dropped off dramatically since the end of May. He went from 106 plate appearances in May to 47 during June and stands at 22 in July.
Jul 21 2023Senzel is starting in center field and batting second Friday versus the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With left-hander Tommy Henry on the hill for Arizona, Senzel is starting over TJ Friedl and also occupying a key spot in the lineup. He's sporting a .993 OPS versus left-handed pitching this season.
Jul 7 2023Senzel went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Thursday's 5-4 extra-inning win over the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel crushed the first pitch in the top of the 10th inning for a homer and plated the winning run for the Reds. He's homered in two consecutive games and has seven in 60 games. Senzel also showed off his versatility, playing center field, right field and third base.
Jul 5 2023Senzel started in right field and went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run in Tuesday's 8-4 win over Washington. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel, making his first start since June 26 in Baltimore, gave the Reds a 5-0 lead in the third inning with his sixth home run of the season. He's been lost in the shuffle as an influx of young prospects pushed him to the bench. In addition to the competition, Senzel's playing time took a hit due to an unproductive bat. He batted just .143 (6-for-42) with two RBI and a .448 OPS for the month of June.
Jun 30 2023Senzel is absent from the lineup for Friday's game versus the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel has now been out of the lineup for three straight games and started just six of 13 contests since returning from the injured list. He's just 4-for-25 at the plate over that span and could continue to see his playing time squeezed on a Reds club that's been a surprise contender.
Jun 21 2023Senzel is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel will take a seat for the second day in a row and the third time in four games after going just 1-for-13 at the dish since returning from the injured list earlier this month. With Will Benson swinging a hot bat thus far in June, he appears to have the edge over Senzel for the final spot in the Reds' everyday outfield for the time being.
Jun 20 2023Senzel is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Will Benson, TJ Friedl and Jake Fraley will start across the outfield for the host Reds. This appears to be a normal day of rest for Senzel, who slugged a solo homer in Monday's win over Colorado.
Jun 16 2023Senzel (knee) was activated from the 10-day injured list and is batting seventh while starting at third base Friday versus the Astros, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel will return to the big leagues Friday after missing the minimum 10 days while nursing a sore right knee. The 27-year-old appeared in two games with Triple-A Louisville while on a rehab assignment, going 2-for-7 with two runs scored while walking once and striking out twice. Prior to getting hurt, Senzel had produced a .277 average with three doubles, nine RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base over his previous 13 games. Jose Barrero was optioned to Louisville in order to open a roster spot for Senzel.
Jun 13 2023Senzel (knee) is set to begin his rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was initially supposed to start for Louisville on Sunday, but the game got rained out and the team had an off day Monday. The 27-year-old has been on the 10-day injured list since last Tuesday with right knee irritation and isn't eligible to be activated until Friday, so he'll likely make multiple starts in Triple-A.
Jun 11 2023Senzel (knee) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Sunday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel will hit leadoff and start at third base in his first game with Louisville, a promising sign for his health after he was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday due to right knee irritation. The Reds may want Senzel to get another game or two under his belt in the minors before bringing him back from the IL at some point during next weekend's series in Houston. Once activated, Senzel should be in store for a near-everyday role, though he could see most of his action in the outfield moving forward following the recent promotion of top prospect Elly De La Cruz to the big leagues.
Jun 7 2023Reds manager David Bell said Wednesday that Senzel (knee) could return from the 10-day injured list when first eligible, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was placed on the injured list Tuesday due to irritation in his right knee, but it's nothing overly concerning and it sounds like he'll be back in the fold for the Reds late next week. He'd been on a streak of solid production before the injury, though Elly De La Cruz is now up with Cincinnati to command regular starts at third base. Senzel will likely have to find his playing time in a crowded outfield mix.
Jun 6 2023Senzel was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with right knee irritation, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel missed one game last week and another this week with the injury, and the Reds have decided to give him a little down time. He will be eligible for activation June 16, but whether he will be ready to roll at that time remains to be seen. Top prospect Elly De La Cruz is up to take Senzel's spot on the roster.
Jun 5 2023Senzel was scratched from the Reds' lineup Monday due to right knee irritation, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was a late scratch from a game last week with the same injury. He should be considered day-to-day at this point. T.J. Hopkins entered the lineup Monday in Senzel's place.
May 31 2023Senzel (knee) is hitting seventh and playing left field versus the Red Sox on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was a late scratch from Tuesday's lineup due to soreness in his right knee, but he'll rejoin the starting nine just a day later. Senzel has multiple hits in three of his last seven games and has a .775 OPS during that stretch.
May 30 2023Reds manager David Bell told reporters after Tuesday's win over the Red Sox that Senzel (knee) should return to the lineup against Boston on Wednesday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was scratched late from Tuesday's lineup against Boston with right knee soreness, but it appears it was just a precautionary measure. Fantasy GMs will want to make sure the infielder is back in the lineup against the Red Sox come Wednesday, but it does appear he's avoided a significant injury.
May 29 2023Senzel went 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, two RBI and a run scored in Sunday's win over the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel picked up RBI on a single in the second and a double in the seventh while also drawing multiple walks in a game for just the third time this year. The 28-year-old has seven RBI over his last seven contests and is slashing .346/.406/.423 over that span. He does have only three extra-base hits since May 16 but has managed to be timely as of late in run-scoring opportunities. For the year, Senzel is now slashing .264/.337/.396 with four homers, 25 RBI, 22 runs and a 16:33 K:BB over 163 plate appearances.
May 16 2023Senzel went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's 3-1 victory over the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel came up clutch for Cincinnati, hitting a two-run homer off Peter Lambert in the seventh inning that plated Tyler Stephenson and gave the Reds a 2-1 lead. After a slow start to the season, Senzel has turned the corner, hitting .323 with four home runs, 13 RBI and 12 runs scored over his last 17 games. As an everyday starter toward the top of the Reds lineup, Senzel offers ample fantasy value.
May 13 2023Senzel will sit Saturday against Miami. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel has had a run of good health, and it's led to some strong performances. Over a string of 16 consecutive starts prior to Saturday's contest, Senzel hit .322/.385/.542 with three homers and a pair of steals. Kevin Newman will take over at the hot corner.
May 1 2023Senzel went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in Monday's loss to the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel knocked his third home run of the season Monday, a solo shot against Blake Snell in the fourth inning. While he didn't make his season debut until April 13, Senzel has been one of Cincinnati's best hitters. He's slashing .310/.385/.500 with five extra-base hits and 12 RBI through 17 games.
Apr 2 2023Senzel (toe) will report to Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday to begin a rehab assignment, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel is expected to see time at a few different positions once he returns to the Reds from the injured list, and it's likely he'll see time all over the field during the rehab assignment. Assuming good health, he should rejoin Cincinnati by the middle of April.
Mar 31 2023Senzel (toe) is expected to play a utility role when he returns from the injured list, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel is likely to play both third base and the corner outfield spots when he begins a rehab assignment, and those are very likely the positions he'll play with the Reds, as well. The second pick of the 2016 MLB Draft has struggled to stay on the field thus far, and his career .240/.303/.360 slash shows that he hasn't been particularly effective when he has.
Mar 30 2023Senzel (toe) was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel did wind up appearing in a few Cactus League games at the end of spring camp, but he still has a bit more work to do as he recovers from a pair of surgeries for a left toe fracture. He should be an option for the Reds by mid-April if all continues to go well.
Mar 13 2023Reds manager David Bell said Monday that Senzel (toe) is no longer in line to play in Cactus League games this week and is unlikely to be cleared for Opening Day, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though the skipper relayed that Senzel is continuing to make progress in his recovery from November surgery to repair a fractured toe of his left foot and isn't dealing with any sort of setback, the 27-year-old seemingly hasn't made enough advances in his running program and defensive work to gain clearance for games yet. Senzel might have a chance at getting into a game during the final week of the exhibition slate, but it looks as though he'll start the regular season on the injured list. If that's the case, the Reds could take a platoon approach to center field, with Will Benson and/or TJ Friedl serving as options from the left side of the plate and Stuart Fairchild representing a short-side option.
Mar 10 2023Senzel (toe) is on track to make his Cactus League debut early next week, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel has had some setbacks with his running as he works his way back from two surgeries on his fractured left big toe. However, he's made nice progress of late and Reds manager David Bell said Friday that Senzel's batting practice has been the best he's ever seen it. He would seem to still be a question mark for Opening Day, but if Senzel can keep moving in the right direction he's got a shot to avoid an injured list stint.
Mar 7 2023Reds manager David Bell said Tuesday that Senzel (toe) still isn't running at 100 percent, Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel has been hitting and playing defense in both the outfield and infield during daily workouts at Reds camp, but he won't be exposed to live action until his running program is fully where it needs to be. The 27-year-old is still working back from multiple surgeries to repair a toe fracture in his left foot and seems questionable for Opening Day at this point. He'd probably have to start appearing in Cactus League games before mid-March to make it happen.
Mar 3 2023Senzel (toe) will do some hitting in a simulated game Friday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's a big step for Senzel as he attempts to distance himself from offseason toe surgery. The hope is that the outfielder will be ready to play in Cactus League games by mid-March. It would be a tight window to get ready for Opening Day, but that remains the goal.
Feb 26 2023Manager David Bell said Sunday that Senzel (toe) could be ready for game action sometime in mid-March, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel is finishing up his recovery from offseason toe surgery and is currently tracking pitches before moving on to live batting practice. Assuming the 27-year-old is cleared for game action within the next few weeks, he should have enough time to get ready for the Opening Day.
Feb 23 2023Senzel (toe) is on track to take live batting practice soon, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: That said, Senzel is still not running at 100 percent as he recovers from multiple surgeries to repair a fractured toe in his left foot. Reds manager David Bell acknowledged Thursday that the 27-year-old outfielder might be cutting it close for Opening Day. It's a situation that will require monitoring throughout the month of March.
Feb 19 2023Manager David Bell said Sunday that Senzel (toe) will likely miss the Reds' first handful of Cactus League games while the center fielder begins ramping up, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Senzel received a clean bill of health entering the spring following a pair of surgeries to address a fractured toe, the Reds aren't keen on immediately throwing him into the fire during Cactus League play. Instead, Senzel will use the first week or two of camp to take some reps in the outfield and face pitching in a more controlled setting, allowing him to make up to some degree for the time he lost due to injury in 2022. Senzel noted last week that his toe surgeries prevented him from testing out a reworked swing late in the 2022 season and during the offseason, so his upcoming workouts over the next few days should afford him the opportunity to do so. Assuming Senzel experiences no setbacks with his toe and is worked into the spring lineup by early-to-mid-March, he'll be the most likely candidate to open the season as Cincinnati's primary center fielder.
Feb 15 2023Senzel is back to full health following offseason toe surgery and will enter spring training as the frontrunner for the Reds' starting center fielder role, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. "If he's healthy, he's going to play," Bell said Tuesday. "What I told Nick is get yourself ready to play center, but also as our team settles in, we are going to move him around a little bit, let him play some infield, prepare him to play corner positions in the outfield, so we have some flexibility there." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel may be facing a make-or-break season with the Reds, as he could find himself off the 40-man roster if he's unable to solidify himself as the everyday center fielder or emerge as a useful bench piece. Through parts of his first four seasons in the big leagues, Senzel has managed a lowly .240/.303/.360 slash line in 1,036 plate appearances while missing extensive time with an assortment of injuries. In an effort to jumpstart his career, Senzel told Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer that he'll be experimenting with a swing change in spring training, so his results during Cactus League play may be worth keeping an eye on.
Feb 8 2023Senzel (toe) has spent most of the offseason wearing a walking boot, and it's unknown if he'll be ready for the start of the 2023 season, Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel missed the final few weeks of the year after he fractured a toe in his left foot in September. He's undergone two surgeries on the toe, as the first operation was unsuccessful. The 2016 second overall selection slashed .231/.296/.306 with five homers in his 420 plate appearances in 2022, but despite his struggles at the plate, he has a chance to be a regular for the Reds if he's healthy enough to be on the field.
Jan 27 2023Senzel (toe) is still expected to start in center field to begin the season, though it's possible that he could get work in other positions, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. "He can play all over the field and be an everyday player, but with where we are as a team, he still factors into center field a lot," manager David Bell said. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's still not certain whether Senzel will be ready for the start of spring training, following his surgery in November to repair a broken toe.
Jan 13 2023Senzel (toe) signed a one-year, $1.95 million contract with the Reds on Friday to avoid arbitration, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel's 2022 season ended in September with a fractured toe which later required surgery when it didn't heal properly. His status for the start of spring training is in question and it's fair to wonder at this point whether a breakout will ever happen for the former No. 2 overall pick.
Nov 21 2022Senzel underwent surgery in the offseason to repair the broken bone in his toe, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel's toe wasn't healing properly, so the surgery was simply to mend the issue. He is still expected to be ready for the start of spring training. The 27-year-old outfielder was forced to miss the final weeks of the season because of his toe, and he finished the year with a career-low .602 OPS through 411 plate appearances.
Sep 23 2022Senzel (toe) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old was ruled out for the season with a broken toe earlier this week, so it's not a surprise to see him moved to the 60-day IL in order to free up a spot on the 40-man roster. Senzel had a .231/.296/.306 slash line with five home runs, 25 RBI, 45 runs and eight stolen bases in 110 games this season, and he isn't guaranteed to open 2023 in a starting role.
Sep 21 2022The Reds placed Senzel on the 10-day injured list Wednesday due to a fractured toe on his left foot. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel sustained the season-ending injury in the Reds' loss to the Red Sox on Tuesday, when he barreled into the outfield wall while trying to make a play on a fly ball. The broken toe is yet another cruel twist of fate for Senzel, who has missed extensive time since first reaching the big leagues in 2019 and hasn't logged more than 410 plate plate appearances in any of his four seasons. Even though Senzel had just started to make strides at the plate over his final six games, he'll still finish with a lowly .231/.297/.306 slash line across 109 games. Senzel should be fully healed for spring training, but he may not be guaranteed an everyday role when the 2023 season begins.
Sep 20 2022Senzel sustained a fractured toe Tuesday against the Red Sox and will miss the rest of the season, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old suffered the injury Tuesday when he collided with the outfield wall as he attempted to make a running catch, and it will end his 2022 campaign a few weeks early. The oft-injured Senzel played in a career-high 110 games this season and posted a .231/.296/.306 slash line with five home runs, 25 RBI, 45 runs and eight stolen bases.
Sep 11 2022Reds manager David Bell said Senzel was withheld from the lineup for Sunday's series finale in Milwaukee to get more time off to work on his swing, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. "We're going to take it one day at a time, but I did want to give him a step back in order to have some freedom to work on some things in the cage and then out on the field," Bell said of Senzel, who was one of two Reds players who took batting practice prior to Sunday's game. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel, who also sat out Saturday's 5-1 loss, will get two days off to work on his swing while he endures a prolonged rough patch at the plate. Since the All-Star break, Senzel has hit .202 with a .505 OPS, numbers that have made it tough for the Reds to justify including him in the lineup on an everyday basis even in the midst of a non-contending season. Senzel still looks to have a hold on the Reds' everyday center-field gig for now, but he could lose work to Aristides Aquino and/or Stuart Fairchild down the stretch if his slump continues to linger into the upcoming week.
Sep 10 2022Senzel isn't starting Saturday against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was back in action over the last two games but went 0-for-8 with a run, a walk and two strikeouts. TJ Friedl will draw the start in center field and lead off Saturday.
Sep 8 2022Senzel (ankle) is starting at designated hitter and batting seventh Thursday against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He sprained his ankle in Tuesday's game and was held out Wednesday, but Senzel is apparently able to hit and run the bases well enough to slot in as the DH for the series finale in Chicago. Senzel is hitting .219 with zero home runs and two steals over his last 10 games.
Sep 7 2022Senzel (ankle) isn't starting Wednesday against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was scratched from Tuesday's lineup due to a right ankle sprain, and he'll remain on the bench for a second consecutive game. Whether he's available off the bench remains to be seen, but TJ Friedl will start in center field and lead off.
Sep 6 2022Senzel was scratched from Tuesday's lineup against the Cubs due to a right ankle sprain, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel's injury doesn't appear to be anything serious, but it is apparently enough to keep him from playing Tuesday and he will likely only miss a game or two. Albert Almora will take his spot in center field and bat second in the order.
Sep 4 2022Senzel went 2-for-6 with a double, two walks, two stolen bases, one RBI and two runs scored across both games of Sunday's doubleheader versus the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was the starting center fielder in both contests and made an impact with his legs in each game. He was a bit more productive in the second game, where he had both of his hits and runs as well as his RBI. The outfielder has three multi-hit efforts in his last 11 contests. For the season, the 27-year-old is slashing .242/.306/.314 with four home runs, eight steals, 24 RBI and 41 runs scored through 97 games.
Aug 29 2022Senzel (hamstring) is starting Monday against the Cardinals, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel sat out the last three games with left hamstring tightness but will serve as the designated hitter and bat sixth Monday. Over his last seven games, he's hit .269 with a home run, four RBI, three runs, three walks and five strikeouts.
Aug 28 2022Senzel, who is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Nationals, is day-to-day with left hamstring tightness, the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel will be on the bench for a third straight game while he tends to the injury, allowing TJ Friedl to make another start in center field. A recent MRI apparently cleared Senzel of any major injury, so the Reds are seemingly hopeful that he won't require a stint on the 10-day injured list.
Aug 27 2022Senzel isn't starting Saturday against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel hit .269 with a home run, four RBI and three runs over his last seven games but will take a seat for a second consecutive matchup. Jake Fraley, TJ Friedl and Aristides Aquino are starting in the outfield from left to right.
Aug 26 2022Senzel will sit Friday against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel sits after starting seven straight games. He hit .269/.345/.385 over that stretch but still owns a poor .626 OPS on the season. TJ Friedl will be the center fielder Friday.
Aug 19 2022Senzel (hamstring) is starting Friday against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel missed the last three games due to a hamstring issue but will serve as the designated hitter and bat fifth during Friday's series opener in Pittsburgh. Over his last five games, he's hit .105 with a double, two walks and seven strikeouts.
Aug 17 2022Senzel (hamstring) is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel will end up missing the entire three-game series with the Phillies, but with a team off day on tap Thursday, the Reds are seemingly hopeful that he'll be ready to go for the three-game set in Pittsburgh this weekend. Albert Almora will draw another start in center field Wednesday in Senzel's stead.
Aug 16 2022Senzel (hamstring) isn't in the lineup Tuesday against the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel should still be considered day-to-day as he recovers from the hamstring injury he suffered Sunday. For now, Albert Almora is working in center field.
Aug 15 2022Senzel (hamstring) is not in the starting lineup Monday against the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel will miss Monday's contest after he left Sunday's win over the Cubs with hamstring tightness. The severity of the injury has yet to be disclosed and Albert Almora will replace him in center field and bat sixth in the series opener.
Aug 14 2022Senzel was removed from Sunday's game against the Cubs due to hamstring tightness, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel started in center field Sunday and went 0-for-1 with a walk and a strikeout prior to being replaced by a pinch hitter in the bottom of the fourth inning. He's considered day-to-day for now, but Albert Almora would likely be in line for increased at-bats if Senzel is forced to miss additional time.
Aug 3 2022Senzel isn't starting Wednesday against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel started the last six games and hit .190 with two doubles, three runs and four strikeouts. Albert Almora will take his place in center field and bat seventh Wednesday.
Jul 27 2022Senzel is not in the starting lineup Wednesday versus the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel will get a day off after he went 3-for-14 with a double and three runs scored while starting five games since the All-Star break. Stuart Fairchild will take over in center field and bat eighth versus Miami.
Jul 14 2022Senzel (back) is starting Thursday's game against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was scratched from Wednesday's lineup due to mid-back stiffness but appeared off the bench and was picked off. He'll start in center field and bat eighth in Thursday's series finale.
Jul 13 2022Senzel was scratched from Wednesday's lineup against the Yankees due to mid-back stiffness, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was penciled in to start in center field, but he was a late removal from the lineup due to the back issue. He missed a few games with a lower-back strain during the first half of June, but he returned without a trip to the injured list and didn't appear to have any further issues until Wednesday.
Jul 10 2022Senzel is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In addition to plating two runs in Saturday's 5-4 win, Senzel has also recorded a pair of hits in both of the first two games of the series with the Rays, lifting his season average to .262. Though Albert Almora will get a look in center field in Sunday's series finale, Senzel still looks like the Reds' preferred option at the position.
Jul 7 2022Senzel is out of the lineup for the first game of Thursday's doubleheader with the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel will get a breather for the front end of the twin bill, ending a stretch of 13 consecutive starts during which he slashed .442/.489/.605 with two home runs, three stolen bases, nine runs and eight RBI. Though Albert Almora will get the nod in center field for Game 1, Senzel's hot run at the plate of late likely solidifies him as the clear top option on the depth chart.
Jul 5 2022Senzel went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Monday's 7-4 loss to the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old took Drew Smith deep in the seventh inning, providing the Reds with their last gasp of offense on the night and Senzel with only his second homer in 53 games. He's locked in right now though, batting .432 (16-for-37) over his last 11 games with three steals, six RBI and eight runs, and Cincinnati will continue to give him plenty of playing time as the 2016 first-round pick tries to put together his long-awaited breakout.
Jun 26 2022Senzel went 3-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk in a 10-3 win over the Giants on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The number eight hitter enabled the Reds' offensive barrage from the bottom of the order by not making an out the entire game. The 26-year-old center fielder has now hit safely in four straight games and is hitting .236 on the season with one home run and 12 RBI.
Jun 25 2022Senzel went 1-for-3 with an RBI single and a stolen base in Saturday's 9-2 loss to the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel knocked in the opening run and stole a base in the second inning, but the Giants took over after that. After enduring a 2-for-18 skid, Senzel has gone 5-for-10 with a double, three RBI, three steals and two runs scored in his last three contests. The outfielder still has plenty to prove -- he's slashing .222/.275/.272 with one home run, 11 RBI, 19 runs scored, five steals and five doubles across 171 plate appearances this season, but he's finally trending in the right direction again.
Jun 22 2022Senzel isn't in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel will get a breather after he went 2-for-17 with two runs, a walk and five strikeouts over the last five games. Albert Almora is starting in center field while Matt Reynolds takes over in right.
Jun 19 2022Senzel went 2-for-4 with a run scored in Saturday's loss against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel's lone score came thanks to an error in the fifth inning. He picked up two hits in the game, taking his season batting average up to .214. Senzel fell off after starting this month with hits in seven straight games, and he now has four hits in his last seven. The outfielder is slashing .246/.313/.263 across 14 June games.
Jun 11 2022Senzel (back) is in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel sat out three games with a lower-back injury, but he is ready to get back on the field. He will cover center field and lead off for the Reds on Saturday.
Jun 10 2022Senzel (back) is out of the lineup for Friday's game at St. Louis. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel is sitting out for the third straight game after being scratched from Wednesday's lineup due to a lower-back strain. However, manager David Bell said that the 26-year-old could be available off the bench, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. With Albert Almora (shoulder) also dealing with an injury, Tommy Pham, TJ Friedl and Aristides Aquino will start from left to right in the outfield Friday.
Jun 9 2022Senzel (back) is not in the starting lineup for Thursday's game against the Diamondbacks, Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel will miss a second consecutive game while dealing with a back injury as Albert Almora draws the start in center field and will bat eighth Thursday. Manager David Bell told Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer that Senzel had his back examined Thursday and he could miss a day or a few.
Jun 8 2022Senzel was scratched from Wednesday's lineup against the Diamondbacks due to a lower-back strain, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was penciled in to bat leadoff Wednesday but was scratched while the start of the contest delayed due to rain. The severity of the injury remains unclear, but it's a troublesome development given the 26-year-old's extensive injury history.
Jun 5 2022Senzel went 2-for-5 with a stolen base and a run scored in a 5-4 loss Sunday against Washington. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel led off the bottom of the first with a single and later stole second and scored. The center fielder has gotten off to a great start in June, hitting safely in all five games while going 7-for-23 with four runs scored. It was the first time in three attempts that the 26-year-old successfully swiped a bag. Senzel continues to display little power at the big-league level with just four extra-base hits in 117 plate appearances this season.
May 31 2022Senzel will start in center field and bat third in Tuesday's game against the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was initially scheduled to get Tuesday off, but he'll stay in the lineup for the series opener in Boston after left fielder Tommy Pham was scratched due to left calf discomfort. In his seven games since being reinstated from the COVID-19-related injured list May 23, Senzel has gone 6-for-27 with no extra-base hits or steals, four walks, four runs and two RBI.
May 26 2022Senzel went 4-for-4 with one RBI and three runs scored in Thursday's victory over the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel went 4-for-4 with four singles and two walks and came around to score three times. It was the center fielder's fourth multi-hit game of the season and his third career four-hit contest.
May 23 2022Senzel (illness) was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel missed nearly three weeks after testing positive for COVID-19, but he'll be back in the lineup for Monday's matchup against the Cubs. The 26-year-old recently completed a four-game rehab assignment during which he went 0-for-10 with a run, an RBI, a walk and three strikeouts.
May 18 2022Senzel (illness) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel has been on the COVID-19 injured list since May 4, but he's been cleared to return to game action with the minor-league club. Manager David Bell previously said that the Reds are hopeful Senzel will be able to rejoin the team for the start of the next homestead, which begins May 23 against the Cubs. If that's the case, the 26-year-old should appear in several minor-league games before likely rejoining the big-league club early next week.
May 15 2022Manager David Bell said Sunday the Reds are targeting Wednesday for Senzel (illness) to begin a minor-league rehab assignment, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel has been sidelined since landing on the COVID-19 injured list May 4, so he'll need some games in minors to get back up to speed. Bell previously mentioned the start of Cincinnati's next homestand, which begins May 23 against the Cubs, as a potential return date for the 26-year-old, so his rehab assignment may go through next weekend before he rejoins the big-league club.
May 11 2022Reds manager David Bell said Wednesday that Senzel (illness) is expected to require a minor-league rehab assignment once he clears all COVID-19-related protocols, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. "With Nick, it kind of depends if he's back in the next few days, maybe the end of next week he might go play a few games and be back for the homestand [that begins May 23]," Bell said, regarding when Senzel might come off the COVID-19 injured list. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Bell suggested that Senzel is ahead of Joey Votto (illness) in their respective recoveries from the virus, both players appear unlikely to join the Reds for the start of their three-city, nine-game road trip that begins Thursday in Pittsburgh. Senzel and Votto both look safe to rule out from playing in the four-game series with the Pirates, and Bell's comments seemingly hinted that both players may have a tough time gaining clearance next week for the two-game set in Cleveland or the three-game series in Toronto. While Senzel is sidelined, TJ Friedl and Albert Almora should continue to see increased work in center field.
May 8 2022Manager David Bell said Sunday that Senzel (illness) is still "a couple of days" away from returning from the COVID-19-related injured list, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Bell said the same is true for Joey Votto, who remains away from the team along with Senzel after both recently tested positive for the virus. Senzel looks like he can safely be ruled out for Monday's series opener with the Brewers, which should pave the way for Albert Almora to draw another start in center field.
May 4 2022Senzel (undisclosed) was scratched from Wednesday's lineup against Milwaukee and placed on the COVID-19 injured list, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was slated to start in center field Wednesday and will now step away from the team. Tyler Naquin (undisclosed) was also placed on the COVID-19 IL. It's unclear if either player tested positive for the virus, but they'll both be unavailable until they clear MLB's testing protocols.
Apr 26 2022Senzel went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Tuesday's loss to the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cincinnati fell to 3-14 with the loss, but Senzel provided a bright spot with his solo shot off Robert Suarez in the ninth inning. It was Senzel's first homer since April 30, 2021 -- almost a full calendar year. He still has a lot to prove both in terms of health and performance, but at least for now Senzel appears to be feeling well after he recently missed some time due to illness.
Apr 19 2022Senzel is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game in San Diego. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was activated from the injured list Monday but has yet to enter the lineup for Cincinnati. TJ Friedl will start in center field and bat leadoff Tuesday after being promoted from Triple-A Louisville earlier in the day.
Apr 18 2022Senzel (illness) has been activated from the injured list ahead of Monday's game against San Diego, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As anticipated, Senzel has been officially activated after returning to health. He could start in center field Monday night in the series opener, especially now that Tyler Naquin (undisclosed) has been moved to the injured list in a corresponding move.
Apr 16 2022Senzel (illness) was placed on the injured list Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The fact that the Reds' announcement merely referred to the "injured list" rather than the "10-day injured list" suggests Senzel has been placed on the COVID-19 injured list. He's been battling an illness over the past few days, though there hadn't been any previous indication that his illness was coronavirus. Players can hit the COVID-19 injured list merely with COVID-like symptoms, however, which appears to be what's going on here per C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic. If he continues to avoid a positive test, he could be back within the next few days, but if he tests positive for the virus he'd likely miss more time. Daniel Duarte was recalled to take his place on the roster,
Apr 15 2022Senzel's absence from the Reds' last three lineups was due to illness, but he'll be available off the bench Friday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds insisted Senzel wasn't injured despite the fact that his absences came immediately after an outfield collision with Tommy Pham on Tuesday, and it appears as though that's accurate. The fact that Senzel is sick rather than injured is seemingly good news, as he's dealt with more than his fair share of injuries in recent years. The Reds haven't said when he'll be back in the lineup, but the fact that he's available off the bench Friday likely means he'll be ready to go soon.
Apr 14 2022Senzel's absence from the lineup Thursday is not related to injury, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel collided with Tommy Pham in the outfield and has been out the lineup for each of the last games. However, the Reds have not announced an injury and manager David Bell confirmed that Senzel's absence is not related to a health issue. Jake Fraley will draw the start in center field Thursday in Senzel's absence, while Colin Moran will enter the lineup as the designated hitter.
Apr 13 2022Senzel is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel will take a seat for the series finale, one day after he and Tommy Pham were involved in a collision in the outfield during Tuesday's 10-5 loss. Pham ended up exiting the game early with a left hand injury, but Senzel stayed in and played all nine innings and finished 0-for-3 at the dish. The Reds haven't indicated that Senzel is feeling any lingering effects of the collision a day later, so his absence from the lineup Wednesday may just be precautionary due to the quick turnaround for the game, which begins at 12:35 p.m. ET.
Apr 12 2022Senzel went 0-for-3 with a strikeout in Tuesday's loss to the Guardians. He stayed in the game after colliding with Tommy Pham in the outfield in the third inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pham was forced to leave the game as a result of the collision, though fortunately Pham's X-rays were negative. Senzel has been spectacular in center field in the early going this season, but he's batting .118 with a .294 OPS after Tuesday's 0-for-3. If there's any lingering soreness following the collision, manager David Bell could use it as an excuse to give Senzel a day off.
Apr 9 2022Senzel made two great catches in center field in Friday's loss to the Braves and appears fully healthy to begin the season, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. "He's playing great," manager David Bell said. "He's anticipating, he's covering a ton of ground, making great plays. It's so nice to have Nick out on the field and he's impacting the game in all areas already." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After falling out of favor with the Reds to the point where he would have been optioned to Triple-A Louisville last season, but for a re-diagnosis that put him back on the IL, Senzel has appeared to regain the trust of the team to be the full-time center fielder. This is a big year for the 2016 second overall pick -- whether he can remain healthy for a full season remains in doubt, let alone whether his talent can be fully developed at the plate.
Mar 21 2022Senzel and the Reds agreed to a one-year, $1.25 million deal Monday, avoiding arbitration, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel has reached the arbitration stage of his career without fully establishing himself, largely due to injury. In 616 career plate appearances split across the last three seasons, he's homered 15 times and stolen 18 bases while hitting .246/.308/.396. Opportunities are available for him to carve out a major role for the rebuilding Reds this season, particularly in center field, but health remains his biggest question mark.
Mar 12 2022Senzel (knee) will focus on center field in spring training, Reds GM Nick Krall told Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's worth noting that Krall merely answered "yes" when Nightengale asked if Senzel would focus on center field - Krall didn't bring up the topic or elaborate on it. The Reds have moved Senzel around frequently throughout his career, so a little stability in one position can't hurt. Of course, Senzel has to prove that he can stay healthy before any of this matters.
Sep 4 2021Senzel went for another opinion on his knee and manager David Bell said Saturday that it's "going to take a while" before Senzel is fully healthy, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds' skipper said he's unsure whether Senzel will return this season. Reading between the lines, it seems like a long shot, unless the Reds make a deep postseason run. Senzel underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in May and was still noticeably favoring the knee when he hit following his return. Injuries have been a recurring theme for Senzel, and there didn't appear to be a spot for him anyway as he was optioned initially before that option was ultimately rescinded due to the ongoing trouble with the knee.
Aug 19 2021Senzel (knee) had his option reversed by the Reds on Thursday, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Sunday after he was reinstated from the 60-day injured list, but he was examined by several doctors this week who discovered fluid on his left knee. As a result, the 26-year-old will now revert to the big-league injured list, and he'll head to Arizona to continue his rehab process.
Aug 15 2021The Reds activated Senzel (knee) from the 60-day injured list Sunday and optioned him to Triple-A Louisville. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel had been playing regularly at Louisville after kicking off his rehab assignment July 30, appearing in 10 games while slashing .286/.316/.429 with four extra-base hits (three doubles, one triple). The 26-year-old picked up starts at both shortstop and center field with the hope of potentially filling a utility role upon rejoining the big club, but the Reds felt he was better served playing on an everyday basis at Louisville after his rehab assignment expired. The decision to keep Senzel in the minors is perhaps an indication of the former top prospect's shaky long-term outlook in the organization, as he hasn't met expectations over parts of three seasons in the big leagues while missing considerable time due to injuries.
Jul 29 2021Senzel (knee) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Friday, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel has been out since mid-May due to a knee issue which eventually required a clean-up procedure. The Reds have been targeting a return in early August, which still appears possible even though he'll likely need more than just a game or two in the minors before he's considered ready to go.
Jul 21 2021Reds manager David Bell said Wednesday that he expects Senzel (knee) to play both center field and shortstop when he likely begins a minor-league rehab assignment next week, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds' decision not to make shortstop a priority this offseason has come back to haunt the team; converted third baseman Eugenio Suarez was a flop at the position defensively before shifting back to the hot corner in early May, and Kyle Farmer (.650 OPS on the season) has been largely unproductive since taking over as the everyday shortstop. Senzel has played only one career game at shortstop during his time in the minors, but his athleticism should at least make him a superior defender at the position compared to Suarez. In addition to making sure Senzel's knee responds well to work in the outfield during his rehab assignment, the Reds will see if he can hold his own at shortstop, the position that would probably represent his clearest path to an everyday role once he's eventually activated. Before the knee injury surfaced, Senzel had been seeing most of his work at second and third base after Tyler Naquin locked down the center-field job following his hot start to the season at the dish.
Jul 19 2021Senzel (knee) has made progress in the past week and could begin a rehab assignment next week, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel has already missed over two months with a knee injury which wound up requiring surgery. He's previously been given a mid-July timeline and a late-July timeline, but both of those have proven overly optimistic. He appears to be on the right path, however, and beginning a rehab assignment next week should put him on track to return in early August.
Jul 17 2021Senzel (knee) has started doing more baseball activities but still isn't expect back until early August, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. "He's still making his way, adding activities," manager David Bell said. "He's taking fly balls, taking ground balls, doing more and more... With only two weeks or so left in July, I'd expect all of those guys back in August." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel is on the 60-day IL and could return as early as July 30th, but it appears to be more likely that he'll need a little more time beyond that.
Jun 25 2021Senzel (knee) isn't expected to return until late July, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel has been out with a knee injury since mid-May and eventually underwent surgery. Previous reports indicated he was targeting a mid-July return, but he's now slightly behind that timetable.
Jun 24 2021Senzel (knee) played catch Thursday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old isn't expected to return to major-league games until after the All-Star break since he continues to recover from left knee surgery, but it was encouraging to see him participate in some baseball activity Thursday. Jonathan India should continue to serve as the primary second baseman while Senzel is sidelined.
Jun 13 2021The Reds transferred Senzel (knee) to the 60-day injured list Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel's last appearance for the Reds came May 17. He underwent surgery on his left knee a week and a half later, prompting the club to target the All-Star break for his return to action. His move to the 60-day IL ensures he won't be available for the first couple of games after the break, but Senzel's timeline to return shouldn't be dramatically altered by the transaction. Aristides Aquino (wrist) was activated from the 60-day IL in a corresponding move, and he'll likely serve as a reserve outfielder behind everyday starters Jesse Winker, Nick Castellanos and Tyler Naquin.
Jun 6 2021Reds manager David Bell said Sunday that he anticipates Senzel (knee) will return from the 10-day injured list in mid-July, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds will wrap up their first-half schedule July 11, so the team is presumably hopeful that Senzel will be ready to go after the All-Star break. Senzel is just over a week removed from undergoing arthroscopic surgery to clean out cartilage in his left knee.
May 29 2021Senzel underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Friday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel's procedure to clean out cartilage from his knee appears to have gone as planned, but manager David Bell didn't have an updated timetable for the 25-year-old's return Saturday. Senzel is expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks, but a better idea of his status should be known once he's able to resume activities. Jonathan India figures to continue serving as the primary second baseman in Senzel's absence.
May 26 2021The Reds announced Wednesday that Senzel will require arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. He's expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday due to left knee inflammation, and the issue is apparently more serious than the team initially anticipated. Manager David Bell described the surgery as a "clean-up" but said that the Reds won't have an official timetable for Senzel's return until the procedure is complete, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Jonathan India should serve as Cincinnati's primary second baseman while Senzel is out.
May 21 2021Senzel hit the injured list Friday due to left knee inflammation. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel had missed three straight games with what was originally referred to as knee soreness, but manager David Bell had previously said he expected Senzel back in action Friday. As it turns out, the injury is bad enough to sideline him for at least another week. The move can be backdated by three days, leaving him eligible to return next Friday, though it's not yet clear whether or not he's expected to do so. Scott Heineman was recalled in a corresponding move.
May 20 2021Senzel (knee) is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A sore knee will relegate Senzel to a bench role for the third straight game, but he's expected to return to the lineup Friday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. With Senzel out, the Reds will roll out an outfield of Jesse Winker, Tyler Naquin and Nick Castellanos from left to right, while rookie Jonathan India picks up another start at the keystone.
May 19 2021Senzel (knee) isn't in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel will be out of the lineup for a second straight game due to knee soreness. However, manager David Bell said that Senzel could be available off the bench Wednesday, and he's hopeful that he'll be back in the lineup Thursday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Jonathan India will start at second base and bat eighth.
May 18 2021Senzel's absence from the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Giants is due to knee soreness, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The injury doesn't appear to be particularly serious, but Senzel will miss at least a start or two. He's a candidate to appear off the bench Tuesday.
May 16 2021Senzel (heel) will bat leadoff and start at third base Sunday against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old was limited to bench duties the past two games after suffering the heel injury Thursday, but he'll rejoin the starting nine Sunday in Colorado. Senzel is making his first major-league start at third base, though he was shifted to the hot corner in-game once earlier this season.
May 15 2021Senzel (heel) remains out of the Reds' lineup Saturday against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was forced to exit Thursday's game early and has not been in the starting lineup since. The Reds have said they don't expect him to miss an extended amount of time, but his absence opens playing time for Jonathan India at second base and Tyler Naquin in center field.
May 14 2021Senzel (heel) will sit Friday against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel left Thursday's series opener with what was eventually diagnosed as a heel contusion after crashing into the outfield wall while chasing a flyball. The Reds don't expect him to miss an extended period, but he'll sit for at least one game, with Jonathan India getting the start at second base and Tyler Naquin starting in center field.
May 13 2021Senzel (heel) is not expected to have a long-term absence, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel exited Thursday's contest in the third inning and was diagnosed with a heel contusion. While it appears he avoided a serious injury, it remains unclear when he will be able to return to the lineup. Shogo Akiyama could see an uptick in playing time if Senzel remains sidelined for the team's weekend series against the Rockies at Coors Field.
May 11 2021Senzel went 3-for-4 with a run scored in Tuesday's 7-2 loss to the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The move back to second base seems to be agreeing with Senzel. The 25-year-old has hit safely in five straight games, going 8-for-20 (.400) over that span, and the hot streak has pushed his slash line on the season up to .277/.355/.351.
May 10 2021Senzel went 2-for-5 with a double, three RBI and a run scored Monday against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel had plenty to contribute at the dish in the series opener, driving home a pair in the fourth inning on a single to right followed by an RBI double in the eighth. He's in the midst of a modest five-game hitting streak and has put together a .256/.340/.333 slash line with one homer, eight RBI and two stolen bases over 31 games in 2021.
May 5 2021Senzel (shoulder) will start in center field and bat sixth Wednesday against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was scratched from the lineup ahead of Tuesday's 9-0 loss to the White Sox, but that was mostly for precautionary purposes while he managed a sore shoulder. The injury is apparently only a minor concern for Senzel, who should see the bulk of the work in center field over Tyler Naquin now that his bat has begun to wake up. Over his last 10 games, Senzel is slashing .303/.385/.424 with a home run and a 5:4 BB:K.
May 4 2021Senzel (shoulder) will be in the lineup Wednesday against the White Sox, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old was scratched from Tuesday's starting nine with shoulder soreness, but he's expected to be back in the lineup for Wednesday's series finale. Senzel is 6-for-15 with one homer, two walks, one stolen base, two RBI and two runs over his past four games.
May 2 2021Senzel will start at second base and bat seventh Sunday against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel came up through the Reds' farm system as an infielder, but he's logged more than 99 percent of his innings in the outfield since reaching the majors in 2019. However, he'll be picking up his second start at the keystone in four games as the Reds look to find a replacement for rookie Jonathan India, who was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday. Given that India looked overmatched over his first month in the big leagues, he could be optioned to Triple-A Louisville once activated from the IL. That could allow Senzel to settle in as the Reds' everyday second baseman while opening up a regular role in the outfield for the hot-hitting Tyler Naquin, who carries a .934 OPS into Sunday's contest.
Apr 30 2021Senzel went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Friday's 8-6 win over the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old effectively ended Jake Arrieta's night with his fourth-inning blast, Senzel's first long ball of the season. He's been feast or famine at the plate this season, as Friday's effort was the first time he registered exactly one hit in a game, but he wraps up April hitting .254 with two steals, four RBI and 11 runs through 24 contests.
Apr 28 2021Senzel went 4-for-4 in Wednesday's loss against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds struggled massively on offense Wednesday and only mustered seven hits against the Dodgers' pitching staff, but Senzel was responsible for four of those knocks. The centerfielder snapped a three-game hitless streak, but he has been extremely inconsistent and has gone just 7-for-43 (.162) over his last 15 games.
Apr 27 2021Senzel is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel went 0-for-6 with two walks and an RBI over the past two games. Tyler Naquin will start in center field and bat fifth for Cincinnati.
Apr 24 2021Senzel isn't starting Saturday's game against the Cardinals, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel will get a breather after he went 4-for-11 with a double, one walk and a strikeout over the last three games. Tyler Naquin will take over in center field Saturday, batting fifth.
Apr 22 2021Senzel went 2-for-3 with a walk in Wednesday's 8-5 loss to Arizona. He was also caught stealing once. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The center fielder's unimpressive start to 2021 has been marked by a .227 average and only two RBI in 44 at-bats. Only a few years removed from being a top-10 prospect in baseball, Senzel has yet to truly impress at the MLB level, hitting .243 with 52 RBI in 489 career at-bats. He does take a fair number of walks, and thus gets on base at a respectable rate, but will lack legitimate fantasy value until his offensive game reaches the next level.
Apr 18 2021Senzel is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Senzel isn't known to be dealing with an injury, he'll remain on the bench for a second game in a row after he was left out of the starting nine for Saturday's 3-2 win. Senzel's benching appears to be performance-related, as he's gone hitless in 16 at-bats over the Reds' last six games. Tyler Naquin will make another start in center field in place of Senzel.
Apr 17 2021Senzel isn't starting Saturday's game against Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel has gone 0-for-16 with three strikeouts across the past five games. Tyler Naquin will take over in center field Saturday, batting fifth.
Apr 14 2021Senzel isn't in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel has gone hitless with a strikeout in his last 11 at-bats, and he'll get a breather for Wednesday's series finale against San Francisco. Tyler Naquin will start in center field Wednesday, batting sixth.
Apr 9 2021Senzel is not in the lineup Friday against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel is 5-for-14 with one triple, one double, nine runs, two RBI and five walks through six games, but he'll take a seat Friday in Arizona. Tyler Naquin will receive the start in center field, batting sixth.
Apr 7 2021Senzel went 2-for-3 with a triple, a double, two runs, two RBI and a walk during Wednesday's 11-4 win over Pittsburgh. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's the second straight multi-hit game for the 25-year-old and also his fourth consecutive contest with at least one walk. Senzel is 5-for-14 with one triple, nine runs, two RBI and five walks through five games this season.
Apr 6 2021Senzel went 3-for-4 with a walk and four runs scored in Tuesday's 14-1 win over the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The bottom of the Reds' order was a wrecking ball Tuesday, as Senzel, Jonathan India and Tucker Barnhart combined for nine hits, nine runs and seven RBI from the 6-7-8 spots. The three hits were the first of the season for Senzel but he has drawn four walks through five games, giving him an early .273/.467/.273 slash line.
Apr 4 2021Senzel (shoulder) will start in center field and bat sixth Sunday against St. Louis. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was out of the starting lineup for Saturday's 9-6 win over the Cardinals after hurting his left shoulder on a diving catch two days earlier, but manager David Bell felt comfortable enough with the 25-year-old's health to have him sub in for Tyler Naquin in the fifth inning of the game. With Senzel playing the final five innings without issue, he'll now be cleared to take back his normal spot in the starting nine.
Apr 3 2021Senzel (shoulder) is available off the bench for Saturday's game against the Cardinals, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager David Bell said that Senzel is going to be fine and that his shoulder injury is not serious. Even if he doesn't appear off the bench Saturday, it sounds like fantasy managers will be able to deploy him in weekly leagues next week.
Mar 29 2021Senzel (groin) will bat sixth and play center field Monday against the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel had been dealing with a mild groin strain for the past few days, but his readiness for Opening Day wasn't thought to be at risk. He's set to be the Reds' everyday center fielder this season and will face minimal competition to start the year, as Shogo Akiyama (hamstring) will miss the beginning of the season.
Mar 28 2021Senzel (groin) was able to complete a live batting practice session Sunday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel has been out of the Cactus League lineup since Thursday while managing a left groin strain, but if all goes well Sunday, the Reds believe he'll be ready to start in their spring finale Monday against the Mariners. The 25-year-old is projected to begin the season as Cincinnati's everyday center fielder and leadoff man.
Mar 27 2021Senzel is dealing with a mild groin strain but is expected to be ready for Opening Day, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's not clear when Senzel sustained the injury, but he isn't in Saturday's spring lineup against the Cubs. However, general manager Nick Krall didn't sound too concerned about the issue and said that he doesn't expect Senzel to miss time to begin the regular season. Senzel will serve as the starting center fielder for the Reds if he's healthy in time for Opening Day.
Mar 10 2021Senzel homered for the second time this spring on Tuesday night, this time against the Dodgers' Josiah Gray, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. "I think it took him a game or two just to settle in, which is normal," Reds manager David Bell said after the game. "... It's going to be fun to watch him really get into the flow of playing a lot." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds are really giving Senzel ample opportunity for regular playing time, suggesting that the "full-time" if not necessarily "everyday" center fielder label is legit.
Feb 25 2021Senzel is considered the Reds' starting center fielder, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel's exact status in a crowded Reds' outfield wasn't entirely clear, and a platoon between him and the left-handed Shogo Akiyama may have made some sense, but manager David Bell made it clear that he had a true starting role. Senzel had plenty of hype as a prospect but has yet to put fully put things together at the highest level, hitting a modest .245/.305/.416 in 127 career games. He's still just 25, so he has plenty of room for growth, but he may need a run of good health to sort things out and fulfill his potential, something that's avoided him in recent years. His 14 homers and 16 steals thus far in his career hint at cross-category potential if he can just manage to stay on the field.
Sep 30 2020Senzel is starting in center field and leading off Wednesday in Game 1 against the Braves. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel hit .074 in 30 plate appearances against lefties this season, but he only struck out four times over that tiny sample, so the Reds are showing confidence in their young outfielder by starting him against southpaw Max Fried. "We're going with our best lineup, everything that's happened in the past is behind us," Bell told C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic. "We knew Nick had a tough challenge this season, since then he's gotten more at-bats."
Sep 26 2020Senzel isn't starting Saturday against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel started two of the past three games, but he'll get a day off after the Reds clinched a playoff berth Friday. Brian Goodwin will start in center field Saturday.
Sep 25 2020Senzel is starting in center field and batting seventh Friday against the Tigers, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old had been fading into a reserve role but is now starting for the second time in the past three games. Brian Goodwin appeared to take over the primary job in center field, but he's been on the bench for the past three games, two of which were against right-handed starters. Senzel has struggled since coming off the injured list Sept. 14, going 1-for-18 with three strikeouts.
Sep 21 2020Senzel remains out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: On the bench for the third time in four games, Senzel doesn't look like he'll be in store for regular starts as the Reds aim to secure a playoff berth during the final week of the regular season. The 25-year-old has yet to get going in a 2020 season full of stops and starts, as he enters Monday's contest with a meager .211/.281/.421 slash line. Expect manager David Bell to roll with Brian Goodwin, Shogo Akiyama and Nick Castellanos as his primary outfielders the rest of the way.
Sep 20 2020Senzel is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel had a double in Saturday's game, his first hit since coming off the injured list Monday (1-for-10). It's probably best to view Brian Goodwin as the Reds' primary center fielder, at least until Senzel is closer to full speed following his month-long absence.
Sep 18 2020Senzel is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel has been in the lineup just twice in five games since returning from a month-long absence for undisclosed reasons. He's gone 0-for-6 at the plate since his return. Brian Goodwin starts in center field.
Sep 15 2020Senzel is not starting Tuesday's game against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel is sitting two games in a row but not two days in a row, as he started the first game of Monday's doubleheader. He won't be asked to start on consecutive days immediately upon returning from a month-long absence. Brian Goodwin will again be the center fielder in this one.
Sep 14 2020Senzel is not in the lineup for the second game of Monday's doubleheader against the Pirates, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel returned from a month-long stay on the injured list for undisclosed reasons to start the afternoon contest, going 0-for-3 at the plate. It's no surprise to see that he won't be asked to start twice in one day immediately upon his return. Brian Goodwin will start in center field in his absence.
Sep 13 2020Manager David Bell said Senzel (undisclosed) could return from the injured list for Monday's doubleheader against the Pirates, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A return Monday would be exactly a month since the 25-year-old last played in a game, so he would likely only play one of the two games. The team never provided an official reason for Senzel's absence, though it occurred when the team was unable to play following a positive test result for COVID-19 within the organization.
Sep 11 2020Senzel (undisclosed) is not expected to be activated over the weekend but could return for the Reds' upcoming homestand, which begins Monday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel last played Aug. 14, so it would be an exactly one-month absence if he returns to the lineup Monday. The Reds never clarified the nature of his absence, but given that it coincided exactly with the team's brief pause due to an unnamed member of the organization testing positive for COVID-19, it's not hard to connect the dots. He's been able to work out since the start of September, so he should be ready to go soon.
Sep 8 2020Senzel (undisclosed) could join the Reds for this week's road-trip stops in Chicago or St. Louis, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. "It's still a build-up process for Nick. It takes time to be able to jump into this part of the season," manager David Bell said Sunday. "We have to make sure his body is completely built up. If not, you can really expose a player to an injury. We've seen it a lot this year already. We have to do what's best for Nick and encourage him to give us the proper feedback so that we can work together and get him back at the right time." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds pulled Senzel from a victory line Aug. 16 and placed him on the injured list Aug. 19, right before they resumed play following a series of postponements. Senzel said on Instagram last week that he was "one step closer to returning to the field" and has reportedly been working out at the team's alternate training site. Bell makes a fair point about not wanting to rush Senzel, a player with a fairly lengthy injury history at 25 years old. That being said, Cincinnati's playoff hopes are still alive -- if barely -- and the team could always ease Senzel back into action by deploying him off the bench initially.
Sep 1 2020Senzel (undisclosed) resumed workouts at the Reds' alternate training site Tuesday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel wrote on Instagram on Monday that he's "one step closer to returning to the field," and his presence for workouts provides an explanation for the post. The Reds never gave an explanation for his placement on the injured list. Manager David Bell said that it should take some time before Senzel is ready to return to game action. Brian Goodwin should see an increased role while Senzel remains sidelined.
Aug 28 2020There's been no update on Senzel's (undisclosed injury) status, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This comment was made by Nightengale in the context of the Reds designating Phillip Ervin for assignment, leaving the team with only four active outfielders.
Aug 19 2020Senzel was placed on the injured list Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds didn't specify a reason for the move, but it could potentially be related to the positive coronavirus test that caused the Reds' past few games to get postponed. It's possible Senzel was the person who tested positive, though players can be placed on the COVID-19 injured list merely for having been exposed to someone who tested positive, so it's difficult to know for sure. Shogo Akiyama slides to center field for the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Royals.
Aug 17 2020Senzel and all other Reds on the 28-man roster tested negative for COVID-19 on Sunday, making it likely the team will be able to return to action Tuesday in Kansas City, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds had the final two games of their weekend series versus the Pirates postponed after a Cincinnati player was revealed to have tested positive for the coronavirus Friday. Senzel was widely speculated to be the player in question after the team pulled him from the victory line following Friday's 8-1 win, but he now looks to be in the clear with the entire roster having since tested negative. The center fielder previously missed three games in July after self-reporting possible symptoms of the coronavirus, though he never actually tested positive.
Aug 16 2020Senzel was pulled from Friday night's victory line and was visibly upset, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. "It's just something personal and internal with Nick and our team that we'll have more information on coming up," manager David Bell said. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds and Pirates have been out of action this weekend after a Reds player tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday night. That player hasn't yet been named, nor have the Reds elaborated on Senzel's status. Eventually we'll understand whether those two issues are related.
Aug 13 2020Senzel went 4-for-4 with a double, home run and four RBI Thursday against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel connected for his second home run of the season, taking Trevor Williams deep in the fourth inning for a two-run homer. Two frames earlier, he had delivered an RBI single to drive in the Reds' first run of the contest. Through 49 plate appearances, Senzel has maintained a solid .262/.333/.524 line.
Aug 11 2020Senzel (groin) is back in the lineup as expected Tuesday against the Royals, leading off and playing center field. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel left Friday's game against the Brewers with a tight left groin and sat out both of the Reds' weekend games. He's hit a respectable .233/.314/.467 through 10 games this season.
Aug 9 2020Reds manager David Bell said Senzel (groin) checked out fine during a workout Sunday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Bell expects Senzel to return to the lineup Tuesday against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Senzel will be on the bench for a second straight day in Sunday's series finale in Milwaukee after tweaking his left groin in Friday's opener, the injury doesn't appear to be a major concern. Travis Jankowski will pick up a start in center field in his stead, but Senzel may still be available to pinch hit.
Aug 8 2020Senzel (groin) isn't expected to return to the lineup before Tuesday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel left Friday's game against the Brewers with a tight left groin, and it now appears as though he'll be out for the entirety of the weekend series. He could receive three full days of rest as the Reds have an off day scheduled for Monday. Travis Jankowski replaced him in center field Friday, though it will be Phillip Ervin who starts in his place Saturday.
Aug 7 2020Senzel exited Friday's game against the Brewers with left groin tightness. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was replaced in center field by Travis Jankowski in the bottom of the fourth inning Friday as a result of his injury. It's not clear how he sustained the injury, and whether he misses any additional time remains to be seen.
Aug 4 2020Senzel (finger) is back in the lineup for Tuesday's game against Cleveland, batting seventh and playing center field. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was scratched from Monday's lineup due to a sprained left ring finger, but the injury evidently wasn't particularly serious. He's gotten off to a strong start this season, hitting .286 with a homer, four doubles and a steal through his first six games.
Aug 3 2020Senzel was scratched from Monday's lineup against Cleveland with a sprained left ring finger, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel sustained the injury while sliding into a base during Sunday's game against the Tigers. He was going to try testing it out Monday, but he'll instead take a day off to recover. Shogo Akiyama will shift to center field, while Christian Colon will enter the lineup as the designated hitter, batting eighth.
Jul 29 2020Senzel went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run Wednesday against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel took Rex Brothers yard in the fifth inning, capping a seven-run inning for the Reds. It was Senzel's first home run of the season, and welcomed production after he was out of the lineup for the team's past three games due to illness. He has gotten off to a relatively slow start with the bat otherwise, but has struck out only once in 12 plate appearances.
Jul 28 2020Senzel (illness) tested negative for COVID-19 but won't be cleared to play until at least Thursday, teammate Nick Castellanos said after Tuesday's game, John Fay of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel hasn't seen game action since Saturday as he has been feeling under the weather, but he's thankfully tested negative for COVID-19 to this point. It's unclear if the team expects the 25-year-old to be fully cleared for Thursday, but it's apparently the earliest he might be able to take the field.
Jul 27 2020Senzel (illness) is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel fell ill prior to Sunday's series finale with the Tigers and was scratched from the lineup, and it appears he's still feeling under the weather 24 hours later. Phillip Ervin will draw the start in Senzel's stead, slotting in as the Reds' leadoff man and center fielder.
Jul 26 2020Senzel was scratched from Sunday's game against the Tigers since he wasn't feeling well, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's a worrying development for the Reds, as Mike Moustakas was scratched and placed on the injured list for similar reasons earlier in the day, and Matt Davidson tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday. The fact Senzel remains on the roster is a positive sign, though his availability for the immediate future is now up in the air.
Jul 24 2020Senzel is a lot more comfortable in center field after playing there for the first time last season, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. "I was thrown into the fire last year. I was just learning the position on the fly and during Major League games and making adjustments," Senzel said. "I didn't really have any knowledge of the position, because I'd never played in the outfield. After spending a full year in the big leagues and an offseason and a Spring Training and then quarantine and then this, getting prepared for my second season, I'm leaps and bounds more comfortable than I was last year." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel also reported that he lost significant weight during the shutdown - approximately 20 pounds - in order to be faster on the basepaths and in the field. That could translate into more stolen bases on a pro-rated basis should he stay healthy this season.
Jul 14 2020Senzel (elbow) will play in the Reds' intrasquad game Tuesday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel had been on the shelf for a few days with a hyperextended elbow, but the injury was never considered serious. He should be ready to fill a major role in a crowded Reds outfield this season, as he's now past both the minor elbow issue and the shoulder surgery that he underwent back in September.
Jul 12 2020Senzel hyperextended his left elbow and is expected to be back in the lineup Monday or Tuesday, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager David Bell says Senzel is day-to-day, but that he would likely be playing if this were a regular season contest. The oft-injured center fielder underwent shoulder surgery in September of 2019 but was fully cleared from that procedure when he reported to camp.
Jul 3 2020Senzel (shoulder) is 100 percent healthy, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel underwent shoulder surgery back in September. His health is hardly a surprise, as he'd been able to appear as a designated hitter before spring training play was paused and wasn't expected to miss much if any time even if the season wasn't delayed. The Reds' outfield got more crowded over the offseason with the additions of Shogo Akiyama and Nick Castellanos, though the universal designated hitter should create enough extra at-bats to keep him in the lineup for most games, as he appears to be the team's top option in center field.
May 18 2020Reds president of baseball operations Dick Williams said Monday that he expects Senzel (shoulder) to be "full go" when the season resumes, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. "As always with rehab, there are periods of progress and then times to back off. Overall, we believe [Senzel has] benefited from the extra downtime," Williams said. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel had a delayed start to camp while he advanced through the final stages of his recovery from his Sept. 24 surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. Before MLB suspended spring training, Senzel was cleared to play in four exhibition games as a designated hitter, going 1-for-12 with a home run in those contests. He's since been able to accelerate his throwing program and should be ready to man his usual spot in center field when the Reds reconvene for workouts. While his health looks to be sound again, Senzel will still have to fight off the likes of Shogo Akiyama, Jesse Winker and Aristides Aquino for regular reps in the outfield, as only right fielder Nick Castellanos appears to have an everyday role locked down at the moment.
Mar 17 2020Senzel (shoulder) played in four games as the DH prior to the suspension of spring training, and felt good making throws from the outfield in drills, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel and the Reds are optimistic about his ability to play when the season begins. He's also added some muscle with offseason weight training.
Mar 5 2020Senzel (shoulder) will lead off while serving as the Reds' designated hitter Thursday in a Cactus League game against the Brewers, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds are expected to ease Senzel back to action in a purely offensive role while he nears the finishing stages of his rehab from September surgery on his right shoulder. The 24-year-old has been able to take part in defensive drills in center field this spring, but the Reds want to see him make more progress in his throwing program before deploying him at the position during the Cactus League slate. Senzel is optimistic that he'll be fully cleared by the time Opening Day arrives, and the fact that he's leading off in his spring debut suggests that he could be a candidate for those duties during the regular season. Offseason pickup Shogo Akiyama likely represents Senzel's top threat for the table-setting job.
Mar 2 2020Senzel (shoulder) will serve as the designated hitter Thursday against the Brewers, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel is on track to make his Cactus League debut Thursday after being slowed early in camp while recovering from September shoulder surgery. While this is an encouraging sign for Senzel, his availability for Opening Day will likely hinge on how he progresses in his throwing program over the next few weeks. It's worth noting that the 24-year-old is optimistic he'll be ready to go for the start of the season after throwing on back-to-back days for the first time this spring. "I have a good feeling that I should be ready to go for Opening Day," Senzel said Monday.
Feb 26 2020Senzel (shoulder) isn't yet ready for game action, but is getting closer while working through his throwing program, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: We still don't have a specific date for his projected Cactus League debut, but all the emphasis right now is on Senzel working on throwing. "We're focusing so much on his throwing progression that we'll add [hitting] in quickly," manager David Bell said. "It's not that he can't do it. We're letting him focus all his energy on getting his arm healthy."
Feb 21 2020Senzel (shoulder) is taking live batting practice, but is still working on a throwing program and will miss the Reds' early Cactus League games, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There's some chance that Senzel might miss Opening Day, judging from manager David Bell's comments. "It's definitely day-to-day evaluation and kind of one step at a time," Bell said on Friday. "We can't rush it. But we're hopeful that he'll be able to play games here." Senzel has two obstacles to playing time early - his shoulder, and the Reds' crowded outfield. He has to clear the health issue first before he can win steady playing time.
Feb 13 2020Senzel (shoulder) is hitting but is still rehabbing his shoulder when it comes to throwing, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Senzel should be ready for Opening Day, he's going to start spring training a little behind. "Nick is still going through his process," manager David Bell said. "I wouldn't say take it easy, but with the throwing, he's still on a program. He's actually kind of picking the throwing program back up today or tomorrow. He's another guy that's on pace and on target for Opening Day. He's swinging. He'll be able to have at-bats, obviously running and doing all the drills in the outfield as normal, but the throwing process will be a little bit slower than the other guys."
Feb 12 2020Senzel has reported early to camp and said that his shoulder feels good, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel is coming off a season where he fell short of heightened expectations, though he held his own before injuring his shoulder. The Reds have to figure out Senzel's place in the lineup and the field following the acquisitions of Mike Moustakas, Shogo Akiyama and Nick Castellanos, so the greater his availability in spring training, the better.
Feb 2 2020Senzel (shoulder) is not a candidate to move to third base while Eugenio Suarez is out, but it's possible he could move to second base, with Mike Moustakas shifting over to third, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds have emphasized that they haven't yet decided what to do with Senzel, in part because he only started throwing on January 13th. "I'll leave it to (manager) David (Bell) to communicate with Nick and figure out what to prepare for and how he wants to allocate the playing time," said Dick Williams, the Reds' president of baseball operations. "But we have talked about the fact that he's a talented guy that can do different things. We owe it to him, at some point, to tell him what to prepare for this year."
Jan 27 2020The Reds are believed to be weighing trade offers on Senzel (shoulder) following Monday's acquisition of free-agent outfielder Nicholas Castellanos, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Cincinnati didn't retain Yasiel Puig this offseason, the team brought in Castellanos and Shogo Akiyama (foot) via free agency, with both of the new arrivals presumably in line for regular roles in the outfield. That would leave Senzel, Jesse Winker (neck) and Aristides Aquino to fill the final everyday spot, with all three players having compelling cases for steady at-bats. Given his superior pedigree and defense in addition to his prior experience in the infield, Senzel would probably fetch a higher return in a trade than either Winker and Aquino, so the 24-year-old would make for a logical centerpiece in a deal if Cincinnati elects to move him in order to address needs elsewhere on the roster. No deal is believed to be I mminent at this time, however, so Senzel will continue to finish off his rehab from shoulder surgery before reporting to spring training in February with the aim of locking down the Reds' center-field job.
Dec 6 2019Senzel (shoulder) is on track to begin hitting and throwing during the second week of January, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel went under the knife at the end of September to repair his right labrum, and his rehab appears to be right on track. Assuming he's given the green light to start baseball activities in January, he'll be well on his way to beginning the 2020 season with a clean bill of health.
Sep 24 2019Senzel underwent surgery to repair his labrum Tuesday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel finished his rookie season with a decent .256/.315/.427 slash line, adding 12 homers and 14 steals in 104 games. The Reds are hopeful that he'll be recovered from surgery by Opening Day, though it will be worth monitoring his progress over the offseason.
Sep 21 2019Senzel will undergo surgery next week to repair the torn labrum in his right shoulder, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was shut down earlier this month, and unfortunately, surgery will be necessary. Manager David Bell said he hopes Senzel will be ready for Opening Day. The 24-year-old showed flashes of his upside this season and handled the transition to center field well, but he has played in just 343 games in four professional seasons and the durability questions aren't going away any time soon.
Sep 12 2019Senzel has been diagnosed with a torn labrum in his left shoulder and will be shut down for the rest of the season, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel hadn't seen the field in over a week, and the Reds finally announced the extent of the injury Thursday evening. It's unclear at this time whether he'll require surgery, but his 2019 campaign has come to an end. He slashed .256/.315/.427 with 12 home runs, 42 RBI and 14 stolen bases over in 104 games.
Sep 11 2019Senzel (shoulder) is not in Wednesday's lineup against the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The last time Senzel was in the starting lineup was Sept. 3, although he has appeared off the bench in several games since then. Phillip Ervin will start in center field against southpaw Marco Gonzales.
Sep 10 2019Senzel (shoulder) will remain sidelined Tuesday against the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shoulder soreness will keep Senzel out of the lineup for the sixth straight game. He's appeared off the bench in three of those games, so it's possible his absence won't last much longer. Phillip Ervin starts in center field on this occasion.
Sep 8 2019Senzel (shoulder) remains out of the lineup Sunday against Arizona. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A sore shoulder will keep Senzel sidelined for the fifth straight game. He's appeared off the bench in each of the last three contests, though, so there's a chance he could be ready to go Tuesday in Seattle following Monday's scheduled off day. Brian O'Grady will start in center field in his absence.
Sep 7 2019Senzel (shoulder) is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Diamondbacks, according to C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel will miss a fourth straight game as a result of his sore shoulder. He was able to pinch hit Thursday and pinch run Friday, but he likely won't be back in the lineup until the Reds are comfortable with him getting back in the field. Phillip Ervin will make a second straight start in center field in Senzel's place Saturday.
Sep 6 2019Senzel (shoulder) is not in Friday's lineup against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He appeared as a pinch hitter in Thursday's game, so Senzel should continue to be available in that capacity, he's just not ready to take the field yet. Phillip Ervin will start in center field and bat sixth.
Sep 5 2019Senzel (shoulder) is not in Thursday's lineup against the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He was scratched from Wednesday's lineup due to right shoulder soreness but was available off the bench, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. While he can hit, manager David Bell said Senzel won't be able to play center field for a couple days. Michael Lorenzen will get a start in center field while batting seventh.
Sep 4 2019Senzel was scratched from Wednesday's game against the Phillies with right shoulder soreness, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Senzel was scratched about an hour prior to first pitch and the nature of the injury was previously unknown. The 24-year-old should be considered day-to-day for the time being. Phillip Ervin or Brian O'Grady figure to see added time in center field should Senzel be forced to miss additional games.

Jun 28 2018Senzel (finger) underwent surgery to "reduce the fracture in his right index finger" Thursday.Senzel was originally reported to have suffered a torn tendon on the finger, but following surgery the fracture now appears to have been the extent of the damage. The 22-year-old was already declared out for the season and it remains to be seen how the lack of a torn tendon affects the timeline for his recovery, but it's nonetheless good news.
Jun 23 2018Senzel will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn tendon in his right index finger.Senzel suffered the injury during Friday's game with Triple-A Louisville. He is expected to be fully recovered by spring training, with a chance that he will be back in action for the Arizona Fall League or winter ball if the organization elects to go that route. Across 44 games with the Bats, the infielder hit .310/.378/.509 with six home runs, 25 RBI and eight stolen bases. This is obviously an unfortunate setback for the Reds' top prospect, especially since he was likely to receive a big-league call-up later on this summer.
Jun 15 2018The Reds don't appear to be close to calling up Senzel despite his recent tear at the plate at Triple-A Louisville, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports. "We just want to make sure he has a place to play," Reds general manager Nick Krall said on Friday. "He's been progressing well, and he's making good contact. We feel he's played well in Triple-A, especially since he's come back from the injury the past two weeks."Unless the Reds give up on Jose Peraza, which seems unlikely, or trades Scooter Gennett, there isn't an obvious place to play Senzel. He's not going to displace Eugenio Suarez or Gennett directly in the lineup, and he hasn't been playing outfield in the minors, so a move out there isn't in the works. Gennett can play the outfield, but he also has a bad shoulder which prevents him from making the longer throws from the outfield. At some point if Senzel keeps hitting as he has been, he'll force the issue, but for now, we'll wait.
Jun 10 2018Senzel went 4-for-6 Saturday for Triple-A Louisville, scoring twice, knocking in a run and stealing a base, MiLB.com reports. After a slow start and a lengthy injury absence, Senzel has rallied to post a .276/.361/.441 line at Louisville, albeit with only three homers in 127 at-bats so far. Senzel hasn't yet hit for much power as a professional, though his 10 homers in 57 games at Double-A Pensacola last summer teased at that ability.
May 28 2018Senzel (vertigo) is rejoining Triple-A Louisville on Monday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. He had been making good progress at the Reds' spring training facility in Arizona, and will now travel to Louisville, presumably to get back into game action this week. Once he gets back in games, speculation will again ramp up as to whether the Reds will call up their top prospect this summer. The team could really use an upgrade at shortstop, but it's unclear if they will be willing to play Senzel at that position on a full-time basis. He is a third baseman by trade, but had been playing second base at Triple-A prior to being shut down with vertigo on May 4.
May 26 2018Senzel (vertigo) is making progress at the Reds' extended spring training facility in Goodyear, Arizona, taking batting practice and fielding ground balls without incident, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports. The next step for Senzel will be to play in extended spring training games. The Reds haven't indicated whether Senzel will need to go on a rehab assignment at lower minor league levels before reporting back to Triple-A Louisville. This has pushed back any possible promotion to the majors, however. Chances are the Reds won't call him up until late summer, barring another injury to Eugenio Suarez.
May 16 2018Senzel (vertigo) will head to the Reds' spring training facility in Arizona to resume baseball activity, John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.Senzel was initially placed on the 7-day DL at Triple-A Louisville due to vertigo near the beginning of last week and hasn't appeared in a game since May 3. Following a few weeks void of any activity, Senzel appears to be feeling better and will start to gradually work his way back up to speed. Over 22 games this season, Senzel is hitting .271/.351/.459 with three home runs and seven RBI.
May 11 2018Senzel (vertigo) was placed on the 7-day disabled list at Triple-A Louisville, David Jablonski of the Dayton Daily News reports. "We are being very cautious with Nick. He's had this before. We feel we've got a good treatment plan in place. We do think it's realistic to expect to see him back on the field in fairly short order," general manager Dick Williams said. The Reds plan to activate Senzel when he is symptom free, and based on Williams' comments, it sounds like that could be sometime in May. There is no denying Senzel's talent when he is on the field, and the only knock against him as a long-term fantasy asset is that he has now missed time with vertigo twice in less than a 10-month span (he was shut down in late August last year with the same ailment). Senzel, who has been a third baseman for most of his pro career, was moved to second base this year, as he is blocked by Eugenio Suarez at the hot corner in Cincinnati. He was hitting .271/.351/.459 with three home runs and three steals in 97 plate appearances prior to exiting a game on May 3 with dizziness. Once healthy, he could earn a promotion to the majors this summer, but that is far from a guarantee.
May 1 2018Senzel (shoulder) went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and two walks for Triple-A Louisville in the club's 7-2 win over Columbus on Monday.Senzel ended up missing just one game with the shoulder injury, which he suffered while diving for a ball Saturday. The home run -- Senzel's third of the season -- suggests the injury won't inhibit his power production moving forward, keeping the 22-year-old in line for a promotion to the big leagues at some point later in the campaign.
Apr 30 2018Senzel is starting at second base and hitting second for Triple-A Louisville on Monday.Senzel was scratched from Sunday's lineup after exiting Saturday's game with a shoulder injury, but it turns out the Bats were just playing it safe with the highly-regarded prospect. The 22-year-old will look to pick up where he left off prior to suffering the minor injury, as he was hitting a respectable .264/.346/.431 with two homers and two stolen bases through 18 games.
Apr 29 2018Senzel (shoulder) was scratched Sunday from Triple-A Louisville's lineup for the club's game against Toledo, John Wagner of The Toledo Blade reports.Louisville initially listed Senzel as its designated hitter and No. 2 hitter for the day, but the team evidently decided it was best to give the the 22-year-old another day off while he manages a left shoulder injury. The fact that Senzel was close to playing one day after suffering a jammed shoulder indicates that a trip to the 7-day disabled list likely won't be in store for the Reds' top prospect.
Apr 28 2018Senzel left Saturday's game for Triple-A Louisville with a wrist or shoulder injury, John Wagner of the Toledo Blade reports.Senzel landed awkwardly on his left wrist after diving for a ball and rolled in pain. He left the game with what appeared to be either a wrist or a shoulder injury. One of the top prospects in baseball, Senzel was perhaps nearing a big-league promotion as the date to secure an extra year of team control has already passed, though there was no indication that a promotion was imminent. It's not yet clear how this injury will affect his timeline.
Apr 17 2018The Reds do not have any immediate plans to call Senzel up from Triple-A Louisville, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports. "The most important thing is to make sure we're all convinced that he is ready to be here and playing productively," Reds general manager Dick Williams said on Monday. "A lot goes into that. It's just making sure his confidence is in the right place and the approach we're seeing is right and he is doing it consistently. Bringing a guy like that up, you want him to come and stay. You want it to be more dictated by his performance and confidence as opposed to being dictated by the situation here."To that end, Senzel has started off hitting .233/.283/.349 with Louisville over the course of 10 games. Senzel has passed the point where the Reds get an extra year of control over him by keeping him in the minors, so as soon as he starts to demonstrate some dominance at the plate, a promotion could be forthcoming.
Apr 10 2018Senzel has moved back to third base with Triple-A Louisville, the team's official site reports. As C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic Cincinnati suggests, this could mean that Senzel will be up with the big league club sooner than anticipated, or even anticipated earlier in the week immediately after Eugenio Suarez was hurt. With Suarez out, third base is wide open, and the Reds won't have to make a tough decision on whether to pull the plug on Jose Peraza or trade Scooter Gennett to make room for Senzel.
Mar 10 2018Senzel is making third start of spring training at shortstop on Saturday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. The Reds are exposing Senzel to shortstop because they are more than happy with Eugenio Suarez at third base. There's a good chance Senzel reaches the majors this season and having position other than third base to play will enable him to get consistent at-bats.

Feb 14 2018Senzel has been working frequently at second base and shortstop at the Reds spring training complex, having arrived nearly a month ago, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports.Senzel will begin the year in the minors, most likely at Triple-A Louisville, but it's a good bet that he'll be up with the big club at some point this season. The issue facing the Reds is where to play Senzel, as they are very happy with the work they are getting from Eugenio Suarez at third base. The middle infield slots are less secure - Scooter Gennett had a good 2017 campaign, but was a waiver claim and didn't do much the previous years, and Jose Peraza was disappointing in 2017. Either Suarez could move to shortstop or Senzel could play a middle infield position upon his eventual promotion.
Sep 3 2017Senzel is suffering from symptoms of vertigo and isn't expected to play again in 2017, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.Senzel hasn't played since Aug. 24 due to the issue, but it isn't expected to be anything that will force him to alter his preparation heading into the 2018 campaign. After opening the season with High-A Daytona and quickly proving himself worthy of advanced competition, Senzel took his production up a notch at Double-A Pensacola, slashing .340/.413/.560 in 235 plate appearances. He'll likely enter the upcoming season as the Reds' top prospect and could make his MLB debut later in 2018.
Aug 27 2017Senzel hasn't played for Double-A Pensacola since Thursday due to an illness, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The Reds haven't moved Senzel to the 7-day disabled list as a result of the issue, so it's not expected that he'll be sidelined for much longer. Senzel, who is regarded as one of the top position prospects in the Cincinnati system, looks ready for a tougher challenge after slashing .340/.413/.560 in the Southern League since receiving a promotion from High-A Daytona in June. However, since Senzel isn't on the 40-man roster and the non-contending Reds aren't eager to start his MLB service clock, don't count on the 22-year-old to receive a September callup.
Jul 25 2017Senzel, 22, is batting .321/.379/.481 with three home runs, 16 RBI and one steal in 28 games since being promoted to Double-A Pensacola. One of the top hitting prospects in baseball continues to shine despite the bump in levels. He doesn't appear to have elite power or speed, but Senzel should still be able to muster double-digit production in both of those categories. His greatest asset is his ability to handle the bat, though, as he has hit over .300 at every level of full-season ball thus far.
Jun 21 2017Senzel was promoted to Double-A Pensacola on Wednesday, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The first-round draft pick (2016) continued to mash in his first taste of the High-A level this season, batting .302 while lashing out 32 extra-base hits and driving home 31 runs. Senzel will now get the opportunity to strut his stuff at the next level, where he'll continue his development as one of the organization's top prospects. His progression likely has him on track for a MLB debut sometime later in the 2018 season.
Jun 6 2017Senzel went 1-for-3 with his fourth homer of the season Monday night for High-A Daytona. He is hitting .304/.366/.467 on the season, with a league-high 21 doubles, MLB.com reports. The Florida State League depresses power, so the low homer total isn't of great concern - it's the type of league that transforms homers into doubles. Senzel also has stolen nine bases in 11 attempts. He remains on target for a promotion to Double-A later this season.
May 17 2017Senzel went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and four RBI for High-A Daytona on Tuesday.Senzel has recorded a double in four straight games to give him a Florida State League-leading 14 on the season. The Reds' top prospect stumbled out of the game with only four RBI in April, but his slugging has resurfaced in recent weeks to bring his OPS up to .800. The 21-year-old, who was the No. 2 overall selection in the 2016 first-year player draft, is expected to be a quick riser through the Reds farm system.
