May 24 2024Koch was designated for assignment Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Koch will hit waivers and if he goes unclaimed, would likely remain in Colorado's system. He made two appearances with the Rockies, picking up a one-out save in his debut before surrendering four runs without generating an out in his second outing.
May 23 2024Koch picked up the save in an extra-innings win over Oakland on Wednesday, allowing one walk over one-third of an inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Koch entered the contest with two outs and a runner on first in the bottom of the 12th and proceeded to walk the first batter he faced, putting him in an even bigger jam. However, the right-hander was able to get Max Schuemann to fly out in the following at-bat to secure his first save of the season. Koch got the opportunity after Jalen Beeks blew the save in the ninth, marking the former's first big-league appearance this season.
May 19 2024The Rockies selected Koch's contract from Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday, Luke Zahlmann of The Denver Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander missed Colorado's Opening Day roster but will join the big-league club after making 18 appearances for Albuquerque. Koch has posted a 2.53 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 15:2 K:BB across 21.1 innings in the minors this season.
Dec 6 2023Koch signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies on Wednesday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He's been given an invitation to the major league side of spring training as part of the deal. Koch appeared in 39 games for the Rockies in 2023, posting a 5.12 ERA and 1.29 WHIP across 38.2 innings. He'll compete for a job in Colorado's Opening Day bullpen.
Oct 18 2023Koch went unclaimed off waivers Wednesday and was sent outright to Triple-A Albuquerque. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Koch split time between Colorado and Albuquerque in 2023, turning in better numbers at the major-league level with a 5.12 ERA and 1.29 WHIP across 38.2 innings. Koch will have the right to elect free agency during the offseason, and he figures to at least draw a minor-league deal for 2024 if he choses to leave the Rockies.
Sep 30 2023Koch will be the first pitcher on the mound in what's expected to be a bullpen game for the Rockies against the Twins on Saturday, Luke Zahlmann of The Denver Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Koch hasn't pitched more than two innings in any of his 37 relief appearances this season, so don't expect him to last much longer than that this time around. The Rockies haven't announced who (if anyone) will be tasked with handling the bulk relief role behind him.
Aug 8 2023Koch (1-0) earned the win Tuesday against the Brewers. He allowed one hit and zero walks while striking out one over 1.2 scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Koch entered a tied ballgame one out into the eighth inning and was able to keep the Brewers' bats quiet through the end of the ninth. The Rockies' offense was then able to take advantage of command issues from Milwaukee's bullpen and score four runs in the 10th inning. Since he was selected from Triple-A Albuquerque in late June, Koch has proven himself to be one of the Rockies' more reliable bullpen assets with a minuscule 1.42 ERA and 0.68 WHIP through 19 innings.
Jun 27 2023Colorado selected Koch's contract from Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Koch was struggling to the tune of a 7.27 ERA through 34.2 innings this season at the Triple-A level, but the Rockies are desperate for fresh bullpen arms. The 32-year-old has made only four major-league appearances since the end of the 2019 season.
Apr 13 2022Koch's contract was selected by the Mariners on Wednesday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Koch began the regular season at Triple-A Tacoma and struck out five in two innings during a pair of relief appearances. He hasn't pitched in the majors since 2019 and should serve mainly in a low-leverage role out of the Mariners' bullpen.
Jul 12 2018Koch was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Thursday, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.Koch will likely be utilized out of the club's bullpen over the next few days, though he could wind up re-joining Arizona's rotation after the All-Star break should Shelby Miller (elbow) require an extended stay on the disabled list. Across 13 appearances (12 starts) for the Diamondbacks this year, Koch has logged a 4.40 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with just 38 strikeouts in 71.2 innings.
Jun 20 2018Koch (5-4) allowed five runs on seven hits in a loss to the Angels on Tuesday, issuing two walks and no strikeouts in 5.2 innings.Koch surrendered a couple solo home runs -- to Ian Kinsler and Kole Calhoun -- but the major damage came on a bases-loaded single by Mike Trout that scored three. In three of his last five starts Koch has allowed five earned runs, but the other two outings were quality starts. Overall, the 27-year-old has a 4.40 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with a 38:17 K:BB in 71.2 innings. Considering that several Arizona starters are slated to return to the rotation soon, it's uncertain when Koch will next take the mound or in what capacity.
Jun 20 2018Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said after Tuesday's 5-4 loss to the Angels that it's "yet to be determined" if Koch would make his next scheduled turn through the rotation Monday against the Marlins, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. "We're going to huddle up and have some conversations and figure out what the next course of action [is]," Lovullo said, regarding the Diamondbacks' rotation plans for the upcoming week.Expectations were low for Koch when he was promoted from Triple-A Reno in mid-April to replace Taijuan Walker (elbow) in the rotation, but the 27-year-old surprisingly proved to be a reliable back-end starter. He came out of the gates hot with a 3-0 record, 2.59 ERA and 1.05 WHIP through his first five starts, but his 4.9 K/9 and low groundball rate suggested a reckoning was coming. Koch has since delivered a 6.10 ERA in his last seven starts while surrendering 11 home runs, including two in the loss to the Angels. With Shelby Miller (elbow) coming off a strong four-game rehab assignment and checking out fine after a 40-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, it appears he may now be the top candidate to start the series opener versus Miami. If that's the case, Koch would shift to a long-relief role or head back to Reno to continue making regular starts.
Jun 14 2018Koch (5-3) allowed two earned runs on three hits and one walk while striking out five across six innings to earn the win Thursday against the Mets.Koch overcame two solo home runs by allowing only two other baserunners across his six innings of work. It was a nice bounceback effort after he was knocked around for five earned runs in his last start, which came at Coors Field. His 11 starts have had plenty of ups and downs as he has allowed five or more earned runs on three occasions, but three or fewer in the rest. Still, his time in the rotation may be limited with both Robbie Ray and Shelby Miller in the midst of rehab stints.
Jun 9 2018Koch allowed seven runs (five earned) on eight hits and a walk while striking out two across five innings Saturday against the Rockies. He did not factor into the decision.Koch struggled with Coors Field as he surrendered three home runs, the first time he has allowed multiple home runs in a start since May 16. The one positive to take from his effort was that he wasn't handed a loss thanks to the run support he received from the Diamondbacks' offense. With both Shelby Miller and Robbie Ray nearing a return to the rotation, Koch may have a limited number of starts remaining in his future.
Jun 3 2018Koch (4-3) picked up the win against the Marlins on Sunday, scattering three hits over seven strong innings without allowing a run, striking out six and walking none as the Diamondbacks prevailed 6-1.Koch was knocked around for five runs on 11 hits in his last start against the Reds, but he bounced back nicely with this seven-inning shutout of Miami to bag his fourth win of the season. He's posted solid numbers since taking over the rotation spot for Taijuan Walker with a 3.76 ERA and 1.16 WHIP through 55 innings, and he seems to have secured the role with Walker out for the season due to Tommy John surgery. His 31:13 K:BB isn't eye-popping, but Koch holds some streaming appeal based on how he's pitched so far, particularly in favorable matchups.
May 29 2018Koch (3-3) picked up the win despite allowing five runs on 11 hits and a walk through five innings Monday against the Reds.Koch was lifted by the Diamondbacks offense, which broke out for four runs in the second inning and nine runs through the first five frames. He just couldn't miss bats, as he induced just four swinging strikes en route to his second strikeout-less start in three outings. Koch's season high for strikeouts is just five, and his 4.7 K/9 would rivals San Francisco's Ty Blach (4.5) for the worst in the league if Koch had enough innings to qualify. Koch has sharp control, but that won't be enough if he can't find a way to draw more swinging strikes. His next turn is scheduled for Sunday against the Marlins.
May 22 2018Koch (2-3) allowed one run on three hits and three walks across 5.1 innings while taking the loss Tuesday against the Brewers. He struck out five.Koch retired the first 11 batters he faced and took a shutout into the sixth inning. He allowed a double and a walk to begin the frame, however, and was charged with a run as the bullpen let an inherited runner cross the plate after his removal. Koch bounced back nicely after he was shelled for eight runs in his previous start, and he's now allowed two runs or fewer in six of his eight appearances this season. He'll take a 3.77 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP into next Monday's start against the Reds.
May 16 2018Koch (2-2) was dealt the loss Wednesday, allowing eight runs on nine hits and a walk against the Brewers. It was a dreadful day from start to finish, as Koch gave up four home runs and failed to record a strikeout despite throwing first-pitch strikes to 16 of the 22 batters he faced. It's the lefty's second loss in a row, but Wednesday was really the first time so far he's been hit hard. Prior to this most recent outing, Koch earned four quality starts in five tries and boasted a 2.43 ERA. That's now bloated up to 4.06, as he'll look to right the ship in a rematch against the Brewers on Monday.
May 11 2018Koch (2-1) took the loss against the Nationals on Friday despite a strong outing that saw him scatter seven hits over eight innings, yielding three earned runs, striking out three and walking one in a 3-1 loss for the Diamondbacks.Koch put up yet another solid stat line since getting the nod in Arizona's rotation to replace the injured Taijuan Walker, as he has yet to throw fewer than five innings or give up more than three earned runs in any of his five starts so far this season. He's certainly held down the fort admirably in Walker's absence and he now has a 2.43 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP through 33.1 innings. However, he's not striking out batters at a prolific rate with just 20 punch-outs to his name and the .214 BABIP he had coming into this contest suggests he's been fortunate to keep his ratios that clean, so be weary of the potential for regression before putting a great deal of stock in him as an impact fantasy option going forward.
May 1 2018Koch did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks while striking out three over five innings against the Dodgers.Koch fell an inning short of being able to qualify for his third straight quality start, but it was another solid showing nonetheless. He's not overpowering hitters and has yet to strike out more than four batters in any single start, but he's limited the damage by largely keeping the ball on the ground and induced another eight ground outs Tuesday versus just four fly outs. With a 2.37 ERA, the righty is certainly pitching well enough to keep earning his starts, though he draws a tough matchup next time out against the defending champion Astros on Sunday.
Apr 26 2018Koch (1-0) allowed two earned runs on six hits while walking two and striking out four across six innings to earn the win Thursday against the Phillies.Koch recorded a quality start in his second straight outing, needing 102 pitches to complete his six innings of work. He has relied heavily on groundballs in each of his first two starts this season with 20 of the 30 batted balls he has allowed coming on the ground. For his success to continue he will need his groundball rate to remain high, as he displayed little ability to miss bats throughout his time in the upper minors. While his ratio stats are excellent for the time being, he is relying on a .056 BABIP and 100 percent strand rate, meaning his results may change for the worse as those numbers normalize.
Apr 21 2018Koch will remain in the Diamondback's rotation, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.Koch started for the first time this season Friday in place of Taijuan Walker (elbow). With Walker out for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, a permanent rotation spot has been opened up in Arizona, at least until Shelby Miller returns from his own Tommy John surgery sometime this summer. Koch has a 2.77 career ERA in 26 big-league innings, though his 4.64 xFIP indicates that he's nothing special.
Apr 20 2018Koch didn't factor into the decision against the Padres on Friday, giving up just two hits and one earned run, striking out four and walking two as Arizona eventually fell to San Diego 4-1.With Taijuan Walker lost for the season due to an elbow injury, Koch got a crack at filling the spot in Arizona's rotation and while he pitched well in his first MLB start since 2016, he was out-dueled by counterpart Tyson Ross, who flirted with a no-hitter. It was a solid effort, but it will be hard to get a gauge on what type of fantasy value Koch could have at the big-league level until there's a larger sample size.
Apr 18 2018Koch will be recalled from Triple-A Reno to start Friday against the Padres in place of the injured Taijuan Walker (elbow). With Walker expected to miss the remainder of the season thanks to a torn UCL, Koch will get the first shot to fill in for him in the big-league rotation. The 27-year-old spent some time with the Diamondbacks earlier in the season in a long-relief role, tossing a pair of scoreless innings while striking out three batters. He also impressed in his only outing with Triple-A Reno, allowing just three hits during six scoreless innings. That said, Koch struggled mightily across 10 starts with Reno in 2017, posting an 8.40 ERA and 1.84 WHIP across 45 innings, so it would be unwise to expect much in his first big-league start since 2016.
Apr 3 2018The Diamondbacks recalled Koch from Triple-A Reno on Tuesday, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.Koch was optioned to Reno on March 22 but returns to Arizona with third baseman Jake Lamb (shoulder) heading to the disabled list. The 27-year-old brings immediate value to the Diamondbacks' bullpen following Monday's 15-inning win over the Dodgers and should typically be utilized in a low-leverage role while he remains in the majors.
Mar 22 2018Koch was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Thursday. The 27-year-old pitched 14.1 innings this spring, producing a 4.40 ERA to go with an 11:2 K:BB. Koch was a long-shot to start the season in the majors, and now he'll continue to dwell in the minors in his final season with minor-league options.
Aug 21 2017Koch was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Monday.Koch will join the big-league bullpen in place of Braden Shipley, who was shipped back to the minors after tossing 5.2 innings of relief in Sunday's loss. He owns an unsightly 10.06 ERA and 19:13 K:BB through 34 innings with Reno this season, so he won't see any high-leverage innings with the Diamondbacks.
Jul 22 2017Koch won't make a spot start Saturday against the Nationals, as the Diamondbacks announced Anthony Banda would instead be recalled from Triple-A Reno to take the hill, Jarrid Denney of MLB.com reports.Since Taijuan Walker was placed on the paternity list Thursday and isn't due to rejoin the Diamondbacks until Sunday, the Diamondbacks were in need for a spot starter Saturday, with Koch considered one of the leading candidates to fill the void. After being called up from Triple-A in a corresponding move for Walker's placement on the paternity list, Koch went unused out of the bullpen both Thursday and Friday, which would have left him available for Saturday. However, since the right-hander had compiled an 8.47 ERA over 17 innings with Reno, the Diamondbacks evidently weren't comfortable deploying Koch in the rotation on even a temporary basis, so it's likely that he'll head back to the minors Saturday to facilitate Banda's promotion to the big club.
Jul 21 2017Koch could make a spot start Saturday against the Nationals, Jeremy Vernon of MLB.com reports. The Diamondbacks called Koch up from Triple-A Reno prior to Thursday's game against the Reds, providing the team with another fresh arm after Taijuan Walker, the team's originally scheduled starter for that contest, was placed on the paternity list. Patrick Corbin, who had been in line to take the hill Saturday, was moved up in the schedule to start Thursday and provided the Diamondbacks with 7.1 quality innings while Koch went unused out of the bullpen in the victory. Since the Diamondbacks confirmed Zack Godley would start on normal rest in Friday's series opener and Walker isn't expected to be activated until Sunday, a void in the rotation still exists for Saturday. Thus, if Koch is again unneeded in relief Friday, he'll likely be the leading candidate to start Saturday, though he won't make for an attractive DFS or season-long streaming option in such a scenario. The right-hander has submitted a 8.47 ERA and 1.59 WHIP over 17 innings with Reno this season.
Jul 20 2017Koch missed more than two months earlier this season due to shoulder impingement, Bill Mitchell of Baseball America reports.Koch has now battled all the way back from the injury and is completely healthy, even earning a call-up to the big-league roster June 20 while Taijuan Walker is on the paternity list. It's not clear how much this injury has affected his play, but it could at least be a partial explanation as to why his ERA this year with Triple-A Reno has skyrocketed to 8.97 through 17.0 innings after he had an ERA of 2.00 in 18.0 innings with the Diamondbacks during 2016.
Jul 20 2017The Diamondbacks recalled Koch from Triple-A Reno on Thursday. The right-hander accrued a 2.00 ERA in 18 major-league innings last year but has an 8.47 figure in 17 Reno frames. Koch will occupy a depth role among Diamondbacks relievers and may head back to the minors when Taijuan Walker returns from the paternity list, likely in the next few days.
